I stayed here as part of a smaller wedding party, the staff were incredibly attentive and could not do enough to help, especially Lewis who they should be really proud of. We had dinner in one of the domes which was a lovely experience and the food was superb, the steak was huge and perfectly cooked and the maple creme brulee is something I wish i could eat every day ! The rooms were lovely and the beds extremely comfortable. The breakfast was fresh and consistently refreshed rather than just leaving a bulk amount of food out to go soggy so that was a lovely way to start the journey home, highly recommend and will be back to eat at the restaurant another time.
We had our wedding at the Ivy Hill Hotel and it was the best day I've ever had. The staff were amazing from planning the day with Charlotte to check out with the friendly reception staff the next day. Special mention to Lewis, who gave us helpful tips on good photo ops at the second pond and continously checked on us throughout the whole day. We had a very intimate wedding and hired out a dome to have our evening meal in. It was beautiful. The food was delicious and once again the staff were brilliant. I cannot recommend this venue enough! Will be coming back for our first anniversary!
Not impressed to be honest with this hotel. Originally called to book a room using a best western voucher which was purchased for me. Staff originally wouldn't accept it but said they would call me back the following day to confirm, this didn't happen so I called head office who were extremely disappointed that the hotel didn't know the process they then booked me a room and told me not to worry and the hotel would accept it and that they would touch base with them and explain what needed to be done. I then called the hotel to let them know the booking had been made but no answer called 3/4 times no answer finally got through to some one who said they were not part of the main team and some one would call me back again no call back. Turned up for my stay smooth check in process voucher accepted. Rooms were average not luxurious as stated. Breakfast was the worst I've ever had sausages were raw, bacon had bones in it? How is this even possible? hash browns a soggy mess as if they had been steamed! raised this with the restaurant to be told it's only a few items and they have checked the rest and there ok! Outrageous 🙄 All in all a bad experience and the voucher in my view was wasted.
I held a surprise 60th wedding anniversary party for my parents at Ivy Hill hotel and it was amazing. All the staff were so friendly and helpful with a special mention to Charlotte and Libby who took away the stress of organising the party and had everything covered. The food was yummy and my parents had the best day celebrating - would definitely recommend Ivy Hill for any function you are planning.
I recently stayed at the hotel and found the staff extremely attentive and helpful, especially Jess whose manner was exceptional. Large clean rooms, excellent breakfast choice and just a good vibe around the place. Stayed 2 nights and would definitely return.
We recently held our wedding ceremony and reception at Ivy Hill Hotel and words cannot adequately express how wonderful it was! The grounds are stunning and a photographer's dream! So many locations that provide the perfect backdrop. The interior rooms are tasteful and elegant and can be adapted to any number of guests. The Ivy Suite and Ingatestone Room had extra little decorative touches that we had not asked for but were welcome additions. The canapes and dinner were truly scrumptious and temptingly presented; everyone commented on how delicious it was. The staff at Ivy Hill, without exception, are faultless. They provided an excellent service from the time we booked until the day itself and should be congratulated. We would like to give special mention to Charlotte, our initial contact, with whom we shared many emails. She was efficient and extremely helpful, keeping us updated on all aspects of the planning process. Jeremy put himself out in many ways and is a credit to you. That brings us to Libby – what a star she is! She contributed a great deal towards making our wedding so happy and joyful but in an unobtrusive way. Every wedding needs a Libby! From the time we first met her Libby provided invaluable advice and suggestions and we felt safe knowing she would be looking after us. There were so many guiding and thoughtful moments that are too numerous to list. Thank you Libby. All in all, if you are considering a wedding venue, think no further than Ivy Hill.
We recently celebrated our Diamond Wedding Anniversary at the Ivy Hill Hotel and the whole event was excellent. The attention to detail was outstanding, and the quality of the meal, and the service made it a very memorable and enjoyable occasion. I have no hesitation in recommending the Ivy Hotel to anyone.
We had our dream wedding at Ivy Hill Hotel in Margaretting in August '24. We planned our wedding for a good few years and Ivy Hill was brilliant for us in many ways. They always responded very quickly to all our questions and provided us with the right information at the right time. Ivy Hill Hotel is beautiful, from inside and outside, gardens too. Staff were always very helpful, professional and welcoming, nothing was too big an ask for them. They went beyond our expectations during the planning of our wedding and our wedding day. They surprised us during our Big Day so many times, and did things for us we did not even ask them to do, for example they fixed and decorated our wedding cake beautifully for us after it was delivered slightly damaged and decorated our ceremony table for us even though we did not ask them as we forgot to provide flower decorations for this. They also beautifully arranged our wedding favours on the tables. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. They were there for us during the day, helping us with things we did not think of. We highly recommend Ivy Hill Hotel and we look forward to use the venue in the future. M&Z
Can I just say what a wonderful time we had last Sunday for my wife's 60th Birthday in the private dining rooms at Ivy Hill Hotel The room was set out fantastic, the food was amazing and all the staff were attentive without being overbearing. All of my kids and their partners and their children as well as my wife's parents thought the same. Well done all
We held our Diamond wedding Anniversary at Ivy Hill because we had had such a good experience 2yrs ago at an 80th birthday party. From the planning through to the event great care was given to getting everything right. The whole day was as perfect as possible. Our guests were most impressed with the attractive table settings , superb meal & excellent service.
We stayed in room 11. It was a twin as requested and the beds were comfy but the whole room had a tired feel to it. Net curtains were hanging off the rail Window catches were loose and did not feel safe No tea in the room tea tray No fridge in the room Bathroom is pretty grim. The bath took over 3/4 hour to fill half full because of the water flow. The shower is adequate at best. Second set of towels were hidden in the chest of drawers, no where near the bathroom which took us a while to discover
Had a great impromptu and very late lunch. They were very happy to accommodate without question. Very impressive. The food was beautiful and the waitress was absolutely lovely. As it was such a good experience we have booked to stay overnight on our next visit to Essex!
We held my Mum's 90th birthday at Ivy Hill Hotel, it was the perfect venue. The events team ensured the day was planned and ran perfectly. The staff were attentive in the background (the perfect balance). We chose afternoon tea which was really lovely and the team ensured that our dietry requirements and preferences were met exactly. The weather was fabulous and the party were able to sit outside and socialise and we were not rushed in the slightest. Thank you to all the staff for assisting in making it a celebration to remember.
A beautiful hotel, lovely grounds, I would definitely recommend this hotel and will definitely book again, all the staff that I interacted with were all friendly, helpful and welcoming, our room was spacious and clean, the bed was very comfortable with great pillows.
ext: I needed to stay in this area due to a friend's health problems. This was convenient and it was only £307 in total for the 3 nights. This included breakfast. For that price I expected something very basic but was pleasantly surprised. The breakfast was good, continental and cooked, and in the evening I was able to sit in a very comfortable lounge. I had a walk in the well kept gardens. The hotel caters for functions but I was not disturbed by those. I will have to return to the area later in the year and hope I can stay there again. My one gripe would be that they did not have a record that my breakfast was included and on the first morning, I was asked to leave the restaurant to go to reception to show my booking email and prove that I did not have to pay for breakfast. That was rather embarrassing. It was just as well I had not deleted the email. On checking out the invoice showed I had been charged for one breakfast and had to have that refunded, which was careless considering I had shown them my email on the first morning.
This was the ideal venue for our family get together. Conveniently located with onsite parking. Lovely hotel. Nothing was too much trouble starting with support to organise the event. On the day we enjoyed great food and excellent service.
Met up with friends who were staying at Ivy Hill for the weekend. Joined them for breakfast in the conservatory. Wonderful views of the garden. Breakfast buffet wonderful with plenty of choices. Full English or Continental. Very attentive staff, quietly present but not intrusive. Thank you especially to Louis for looking after our party.
Relaxing Sunday breakfast with friends from Hampshire; in a busy weekend this our only opportunity to meet turned out a great success. Friendly & quietly attentive staff on hand to assist with the plentiful & excellent quality buffet. From light continental to full English ( piping hot) & everything in between with bottomless coffee/tea & fresh juices. All attractively presented for easy access & regularly replenished. Our table in the conservatory looked onto the attractive gardens & there was a warm ambiance everywhere engendered by the cheerful staff. Thoroughly recommend this venue & format for taking time out to “catch up” with friends/family over a leisurely breakfast…. & enjoy a political election free couple of hours.!! Thanks to Ivy Hill team for a great start to Sunday !!
Excellent receptionist. Breakfast staff were great and food was cooked to order. Evening meal was great and something a bit different from the usual offerings in hotels. I would definitely stay here again.
My husband and I had to book last-minute after a horrible AirB&B-type flat experience in Chelmsford. We were in the UK for a funeral and they were able to accommodate us for 2 weeks. It was worth getting the breakfast included with the room. Every morning we could choose what we wanted from a full English Breakfast. The staff from check-in to breakfast and bar were all top notch. They have an excellent restaurant there as well. You can walk through the beautiful gardens. They also have weddings and events here. We will definitely stay again when we return to Chelmsford. The room was also spacious.
We would just like to express a sincere thank you for the wonderful Birthday Celebration we had at the Ivy Hill Hotel last Saturday. The whole experience from the first time of contacting Charlotte Eyley to the function itself was faultless. The room was perfect for the number of guests and having access to the outside area a bonus with three young grandsons present. Every one of our guests commented on the venue and especially the superb quality of the dishes presented, with many of the diners commenting that it was one of the finest meals they had enjoyed in a long time. Your staff throughout the afternoon were efficient and very helpful yet discreet , which was appreciated and the birthday cake, when it had been cut, was removed and then miraculously reappeared on each table without anyone noticing. Many of our guests have said they will return to taste other dishes on the menu and we will of course join them. Thank you once again for creating such a memorable occasion and please congratulate all your staff.
A great value hotel with clean rooms and a very good breakfast, and a nice bar area. Most of the staff are very courteous and helpful
We hired the Ivy room for a 90th party and we had a lovely afternoon. Food was good and the staff professional and friendly. Everywhere was clean and pleasant and the outside space was perfect. The skate meal was exceptional and all other mains were good but the beef was not the best, overcooked and very thinly sliced. Starters and desserts followed by tea.coffee and chocolates were very good. We would recommend using the hotel for a celebration or gathering.
When are hotel chains just going to understand that customer just want hearty meals and not made up fancy names that do not reflect the price, eg two small bits of batterd haddock fingers and chips £19 and toffe pudding (verysmall and not enough sauce) and a tiny scoop of defrosted then re-frozen ice cream £8............rip off.
We've just arrived home from a very memorable night at the Ivy Hill Hotel, we hired the Margaretting Suite for 75 people for a Dinner and Dance. Arranging the event was super easy from start to finish with the help of Libby ,Charlotte & Emily, also the rest of the staff on the night were great. Now let's get to the food. WOW. I've been to a lot of Black Tie events at various hotels over the years and also in many price brackets and the Ivy Hill Hotel was by far the best, and then some!!!! The hotel itself is decorated to a high standard with a lovely lounge area to the side of the restaurant (Bartella's) All in all, a 10 out of 10 choice for an event or just for lunch or afternoon tea and will definitely be back for more!! Well done Ivy Hill
We had our daughter's 21st birthday party here. From the beginning, Libby and Charlotte were so helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them and their staff. Everyone commented on how lovely the buffet was too. We would highly recommend hosting a party here. Thank you to all the staff involved who worked so hard to make our daughter's party a memorable one!
My wife and I stayed at the Ivy Hill for two days. The staff were, without exception, extremely pleasant. The room was fine and the restaurant ("Bartellas") provided excellent meals all day. Nothing at all about which to complain other than the weight we put on!
Bed and pillows REALLY comfortable however didn't sleep at all due to roadworks outside ALL NIGHT .... really noisy. Such a shame as otherwise a lovely location.... If hotel had informed us of this fact we would have changed our stay date (booked it for another time as roadworks already there when my partner booked it).
If you're looking for a stress free wedding day (or any kind of special day) friendly helpful staff, hands on manager/ assistant managers and comfy accommodation on beautiful grounds then look no further! The staff, manager and assistant managers were amazing and catered to all our needs, ensuring for a smooth, perfect wedding day. Food is yummy, rooms were lovely.
I stayed at the Ivy Hill hotel as this was the nearest hotel for me to stay. As I was meeting up with friends for a long over due catch up. All the staff were lovely in all departments I could not fault my stay highly recommended the hotel I did not use the restaurant, so I could not comment on this
The staff are a great asset to this business. Very polite and helpful. Very Clean and offered everything I needed. Take time to have the food here, it is delicious and they have a proper gluten free menu, the gluten free fish & chips are a must! I was attentive that the staff remember that I was gluten free at breakfast. Well recommended.
Excellent overall experience , at check in we were given a complimentary upgrade to a four poster suite , room was very comfortable . Parking plentiful and service , quality and choice of food was excellent . Would certainly recommend
Lovely place to stay in Essex. Good location, close to A12. We were greeted by Lauren who was exceptional in answering all our questions and helping us settle in. It makes such a difference being welcomed with a smile.
Stayed at the Best Western Ivy Hill after a Charity Winter Ball. I've said the trip is friends, as friends and supporters of the charity. Fabulous venue, amazing team of staff headed up by Libby, nothing is too much trouble. Always feels like home. Function room stunning, dinner exceeded expectations - every course. Comfortable stay, with a good breakfast too. Thanks all particularly Libby, Sam Emily, Little Emily, Louis (could be Lewis), Charlotte, and Mary.
Chelmsford Beekeepers held our Annual Dinner at the Ivy Hill hotel on Thursday. The venue was perfect, reasonably priced yet really good food served on hot plates by kind and capable staff. Thank you to all involved.
Outstanding stay on business for 5 nights. The customer service from start to finish was quite outstanding. Breakfast was excellent every morning with staff providing the highest quality of service. Evening meals were also of similar quality. Kind regards Jim Macbeth
We had an enjoyable few days here recently. The hotel has very nice grounds but can get busy with events over the weekend leading to some noise at night. Our room was comfortable although very warm (it was during the heatwave) and we were provided with a fan which helped. Although we were facing the road there wasn't a lot of traffic noise. Housekeeping in the room could have ben better as there was rubbish under the desk table and the guest information booklet was covered in dust. Also when the room was serviced, neither the toilet rolls or the tea tray were replaced one day. The worst thing about this room was the awful, non existent water pressure. I'd be generous if I said it was a dribble! Having a shower was an ordeal and really shouldn't be in 2023. We didn't eat in the on site restaurant - the food sounded nice but the prices seemed a little steep. The breakfast, however, was excellent as were all the staff we encountered. I would stay here again but I'd ask for a room with a shower that worked next time!
I stayed between business meetings. I needed a place to rest and eat and especially wanted a really good nights sleep and not in Chelmsford. The Ivy Hill did this very well indeed and I would stay there again (this was my second visit).
Stayed here for 2 nights as I was attending a wedding near by. Most of the wedding party was also staying here and I have to say that the staff were excellent. They went above and beyond to accommodate our needs. A special thankyou to Shane, Lewis, and Lauren who were amazing and went out of their way to help us. Thoroughly recommend this hotel
We come to this hotel for 2 nights as my brother and his wife was getting married up the road. Beautiful little hotel. Food was lovely.Would definitely stay again the staff are amazing. Special shout out to Lauren on front desk, she was absolutely brilliant. She has a fantastic friendly attitude and she went above and beyond to make sure my sister in law the bride to be.and the rest of us bridal party had a nice chilled time before the wedding thank you Lauren for making our stay so pleasant. We will be back.
We met up here with old friends and were looked after from the moment we arrived. The lovely room was clean and spacious and the breakfast next morning was a great choice from a hot and cold buffet. The modern looking in house restaurant was stylish but again very friendly and the great choice of dishes meant we didn't have to leave the hotel. We will definitely be back
I recently stayed at the Ivy Hill Hotel for a leisurely visit with my boyfriend. When checking in, I was greeted by a friendly receptionist who made the check in process speedy and efficient for us. The rooms were clean, spacious and we were located one overlooking the gardens. Which was a pleasant suprise. In the evening we decided that we wanted to dine in the on-site restaurant which excelled our expectations. The presentation was lovely, I had the scallops followed by the pork belly which were both equally as yummy! Overall we would like to say a big Thankyou to the staff for looking after us during our stay, they are a credit to the Ivy Hill :)
We were in the area visiting family & would definitely return to this hotel. We had a fabulous meal in the restaurant and breakfast the following morning was delicious. Also some wonderful public pathways if you do want to venture out for a countryside walk. We will be back very soon!
Awful dirty hotel. Room was filthy, piles of dust and debris behind furniture. We were bitten badly by bed bugs. Bathroom shabby and grubby. The whole place is old and needs a refurbishment we will never stay again.
No major problems. Rooms could do with a refurb and the in room facilities were a bit dated. The view from our room (11) was of a totally unkept garden area. Breakfast very good as was the staff service. Worth a 'one night stay'.
Room was tired and dated. Stains on lamp shades, room doors well pas their sell by date. Furniture from the 80s. Bathroom nice and modern. Lamps not working in the room. Mismatched furniture. A bit Fawlty towers. Restaurant overpriced. They charge you and bill you for tips but don't tell you that . However it is listed on the receipt you get. A main is about £22 but if you want a rump it's £32! a starter £10 and a sweet £10 . Wine £33 bottle. A pint of beer £6.30!!!!!!!! Nice grounds which could be utilised better. A weekend and the restaurant had 3 people in it, which is not supposing given the cost . Food was ok. Pork belly lovey but not crispy on the top so was wobbly fat . It's ok for a stop off but I wouldn't want to stay longer . Overpriced. It was £319 for 2 nights with breakfast. Breakfast not included and costs £16.50 each . Premier inn much cheaper, cleaner, modern and better equipped .
We had our wedding reception in the Margaretting Suite at Ivy Hill Hotel and the whole experience was fantastic. From the initial booking right up to the day, Libby was always available to help with any issues or questions, never seeming to go home. The evening went so smoothly and we wouldn't have changed a thing. The venue is lovely, set in beautiful grounds and the perfect place for a function like this. Thanks again to Libby and her colleagues. Keith & Jo
The room rate was £145 for two people including breakfast. The room was grubby, dirty bed spread, grim toilet. The bed was so badly made it looked like it had been slept on. Sink was dirty. Phone in room was filthy. There was peeling paint in the corridor, thrown just looked tired. Public areas were better. Breakfast was good. I would not go back.
This must be my third or fourth visit in the last 2 years at the Ivy Hill Hotel. As before, a lovely clean room, great size with a really comfortable bed & superb bed linen. The staff (as always) are all friendly & delightful. The evening meals are delicious, the breakfasts also. (I do recommend the smoked haddock, poached egg & bacon!). Value? Well, the price doesn't fluctuate like the cheaper chains where you MAY be lucky and find a cheaper room... But you can just as easily end up paying the same there as this luxury hotel which has truly excellent staff and a wonderful kitchen. I know where I'd rather be!
Whilst the accommodation could be described as a little 'tired' in some areas, it was spotlessly clean and the staff were fantastic. I was greeted by a very efficient receptionist who was very friendly and I would specifically like to mention Jeremy and George in the restaurant who were attentive but not intrusive and gave great service. I primarily ate from the starters section of the menu (small appetite) and everything I tried was excellent, compliments to the kitchen staff too.
We had a family Afternoon Tea yesterday, and it was amazing! First impressions were 'Wow' as the crockery was a black, white and gold Art Deco style and the cups had a little heart in the bottom - we all loved them. The actual food was truly scrumptious, and suited everyone, even those who had different tastes. From the savoury to the sweet cakes etc, it all went to making a truly memorable afternoon. The staff were so attentive too, none of us wanted for anything the whole time. REALLY recommend the Ivy Hill for a wonderful Afternoon Tea experience.
Arrival to be greeted by rude reception The deluxe room was shabby room overlooking the air conditioning units I was assured they would be switched off at night It was 26 so I hoped not. Shown a second room that was fine The window had to remain and the noice was so great I left at 3.30am rather than stay there. It was a lovely drive and not much traffic so arrived at my next destination very early but they then checked me in very early no extra charge and I had nice breakfast. Won't stay again at Ivy Hill
Really helpful staff, room lovely, great food. The staff were super helpful, it was very hot weather and they brought iced water to my room - there was a fan and actually didn't feel the need for AC. Plenty of parking.
I hired a dining room for a family celebration. The venue was perfect, service excellent, and the food, many of the party thought was exceptional, and I agree with them. We had a couple of hiccoughs with the rooms which were no one's fault and they were dealt with speedily, politely and professionally.
Hotel was OK. Very good breakfast. Clean room and comfy bed. My only bug bear was the shower, well if u could call it a shower. Literally water barely coming out, very very difficult to actually "take a shower". There was a sign on wall stating "This is not a power shower it's a rainfall shower". Honest I thought when I saw it, blimey this will be great looked like it was all singing all dancing, big shower head plus a movable head, walk in, plenty of room, only to be faced with a trickle of water. Other than that (sorry to go on) hotel was fine. Also check in was good.
We stayed here for my hen do on 29/04/23 and it was amazing. The rooms were immaculate and clean. The bed was extremely comfortable I slept so well! The food was incredible and the staff couldn't have been more helpful or friendly. The best stay I have ever had. Thank you so much to you all for a more than perfect experience.
Ok hotel, location good. Room was ok comfortable. Had room service burger undercooked for me (pink inside) Breakfast was ok nice selection on menu On check out wasn't asked if everything was ok I had a meal allowance which they tried to charge the full allowance even though I didn't have the full allowance ! Didn't like this
We have visited many venues over the years for our works parties. Due to us being a large group of people it is hard to find somewhere that can accommodate to all our our needs. However we have now found this at the Ivy hill. Everything was perfect! The food was amazing, service was exceptional with extra special attention to detail. The rooms were extremely comfortable and very clean. There were no complaints from any of our guests, far from it! I would highly recommend this hotel if you are looking for somewhere to hold a function or for a special occasion. We will 100% be visiting again soon.
Thank you for your support , proffesionalism and hard work for a successful burns night. For a Rotary Club event evening. The main manager was working with us from the start , booking detailing requests and was looking after every detail to the start of the evening and to the end of a marvellous night. The food is always first class, tastes great and is presented very nicely. All in good value for a three course meal. Service is instant to each person, so no one is waiting or missing. This is achieved even for eighty people.
Rooms tired and shower difficult to use. Taxi options limited if you want to go anywhere . And not much assistance frkm hotel. If you need taxi you need to book a few days in advance. Breakfast was slow and seemed disorganised . Selection poor.
Extremely disappointed in the management of this venue. I was told, in writing, that there would be no deposit required for my event (they even attached Ts & Cs to confirm this). Three months later, I am being asked for a £1,000 deposit and that the email I was sent just a couple of months ago is not valid and that their terms have changed. I would be EXTREMELY wary of agreeing to book an event here as you just don't know what you're agreeing to, clearly they feel they can move the goalposts whenever they feel like it. Absolute disgrace, will likely be taking legal action.
Our second time using this hotel for new Years Eve dinner and entertainment and the stay in one of the reduced rate rooms for the night. Couldnt fault the standard double room except to say was rather hot even with the heating off and it being in December. The food and the service and the whole evening including the live singer were all amazing. Was expecting last years live 3 piece band but had a singer with taped backing music who was almost as good as last year and soon got people dancing. As usual Libby and her team joined us all on the dance floor at 12 midnight and had a great time too. They are a funny lively bunch and were fun to watch on the dance floor. Cannot wait to book again for next year.
What a fantastic time we all had last night - from start to finish the event was amazing - great food, great atmosphere nonstop enjoyment. The staff worked so hard to ensure everyone had a great New Year's Eve. Would highly recommend this event for a fab New Year's Eve party
Clean rooms a little dated but fine. Food a bit dull in the evening but it did the job. Breakfast was good. Coffee needed to get fro mthe bar as the stuff at breakfast was undrinkable! Overall fine for a couple of nights.
For 40 years my family knew the owner and we held functions there . so it was natural on my 60th birthday when I invited 100 guests that I would have it here. At the last moment (about 3 days before) we were told they had moved te venue from the ballroom into a room with columns in . It was too late to move. Out of the 100 there were 5 vegitarians / vegans who's food was so bad I would not put it out for wildlife. It had been baked (?) rice for 24 hours with a greasy ring baked into the plate. There was NO NAME suitable ( or polite for this site) . So I paid in full THEN told them what I thought. I ws offered a free afternoon tea. Now , my partner is having a "Significant birthday" and wants to take friends for afternoon tea. on FEb 11th SHE asked about booking so I phoned to reseerve a day in FEburary next year = 4 MONTHS AWAY. They told me the price but then told me I had to bok it now as it was valenties weekend ( I bet they use it the following weekend as well ) SO they can not guarentee the price does not go up. SO - I'd have to guarentee MY booking & THEY can increase it at ant time to ANY AMOUNT ! Now THATS HOW TO LOSE CLIENTS !
I had to visit Essex for a dear friends funeral. This is the second time I've stayed at the Ivy Hill this year. This time I used the restaurant and have to say the food and service was of a tremendously good standard, belying its reasonable price. (I can recommend the fish in beer batter). The same can be said for the bar food (I had a ham/ tomato sandwich... fresh bread, fresh sliced ham... Lovely! The breakfasts were lovely too... smoked haddock, poached egg & bacon, with fresh baked bread. Super room (15), spacious, clean, comfy bed, crisp linen.
We had a wonderful family party for my 70th Birthday. All the family really enjoyed the afternoon tea and the venue. We had excellent service from all the staff before and during the event - thank you so much.
brilliant service given to us at a party on Saturday evening. From when we first checked in at reception through to the evening food, disco, overnight stay and breakfast the staff and the venue were great. The Ivy Hill has maintained it's extremely high standards. Again, many thanks for a very successful and enjoyable night.
We celebrated our joint 40th birthday and the lead up to the party was great, they helped and answered any questions we had, they were very accommodating to our requests. The party was a huge success and everyone had a great time. The food was great and the rooms are very comfortable in the hotel
Really lovely hotel. Helpful, friendly staff. Fabulous breakfast......only little gripe was that I didn't think housekeeping tidied our room (number 3) very well. When the furniture has mirrored tops it would be an idea to dust them as it was very obvious they hadn't been done before our arrival or after our first nights stay. Bathroom tiles by the sink had toothpaste splats on from previous occupants! Not convinced the floor was mopped either. Broken standard lamp. Fire exit door lets in quite a bit of road noise but I doubt much can be done due to Health and Safety. All the other things I would expect to be done for £190 a night. Apart from that ....Great place, would recommend....just a quiet word with Housekeeping needed maybe?
My wife and family arranged a surprise 60th Birthday meal here with 30 guests. We had the small function room and a 3-course meal. The room was lovely the service fantastic and food out of this world, we also had rooms overnight which could not be faulted all in all a great experience managed to perfection by Terry and the team, such a lovely surprise and great unforgettable week end. Thank you to all at Bartellas for every thing you did to make it perfect.
My charity event was seamless and everything went as planned. I had 100 guests, the food was excellent and came out on time, staff were all very polite, helpful and happy. Rooms were adequate and clean, the outside space is beautiful and plenty of parking. I will be holding my next event there.
I needed a place to stop over for one night in Essex on return from France. The staff are polite, friendly and helpful. The bed was really comfortable. The room was quiet, clean and a very good size! (Room 15, ground floor) I had a superb breakfast- poached egg with haddock. I didn't eat there in the evening but the restaurant looked popular and the food most appetising.
My husband and I booked a private dining event to celebrate our Ruby Wedding. Commnication beforehand was very good, they answered all our questions and queries quickly and organisation on the day was spot on. The room was perfect with access to the outside area, which was nice because it was a warm day. The table looked amazing. I had table flowers delivered and everything was in place when we arrived. The staff were attentive, efficient and discreet. The food was really good and very nicely presented. All our guests, without exception, commented on how well the hotel had done. We really couldn't have asked for more. A huge thanks to all the staff involved, from start to finish.
I am a wedding photographer so often visit Hotels in that capacity. Last week I shot a wedding here and I was impressed with everything. The customer service was excellent and the attention to detail was second to none. For instance instead of just standing around the cake to cut it the organiser set it up in the middle of the dance floor so people (including me of course) could stand around it for the cutting. Everyone got a good view. The organiser assisted in getting the wedding dress appropriately displayed. In the grounds there are ponds, a wishing well, a round seat all great for a backdrop for photos of the bride and groom. I had been invited as a guest so also enjoyed the wedding breakfast which was of an exceptionally high standard. The staff were attentive and the service at the tables was very well organised. There is ample parking, the bridal suite was lovely (I took some photos of the bridal party getting ready) and the room for the wedding was also to a high standard. I have shot weddings at venues around the country and as an overall package this is definitely one of the best. I hope I get the opportunity to work here again. Well done to everyone who made the day so very special.
I booked a private room for a celebration lunch for fifteen people at the Ivy Hill Hotel and it was a wonderful experience. The table was set out with place cards for each guest and time had obviously been spent preparing the room for us. Each diner had pre-selected their meal from an extensive and imaginative menu and each course served on time with no guest waiting for their choice to arrive. Everyone complemented the food, the environment and the service which is what I had expected when selecting this venue from a host of other options.
Had a family meal at the Ivy last night and hired a garden pod... What a great night, food was lovely, staff were really friendly and polite and the pod experience was fantastic... would really recommend a visit. Reasonable prices, worth booking
I had my wedding here on the 1st september and I can't thank them enough. Nothing was to much trouble. The staff were attentive and went above and beyond. The wedding breakfast and the buffet was amazing and everyone commented on the quality and quantity. The rooms were amazing and I fell In love with the bridal suite. The grounds were simply stunning. If I could do it all again would. Definately worth a trip
Loved every moment. Super food & excellent service so make sure to try the restaurant Bartellas out. The party was held in the larger function room which is just right for a celebration and the buffet offered a tasty variety of buffet food …. No curly sandwiches. Friendly staff and such a comfortable bed. Had a walk round the beautiful gardens on a sunny day & it was gorgeous.
I cannot praise this hotel highly enough! We stayed in the bridal suite, which is beautiful, and our wedding day was absolutely perfect! The staff are unbelievable, and simply could not do enough. Libby and her team made the whole thing run smoothly and stress free, and the whole day exceeded any dream we had of our big day. Thank you so much to Libby and her amazing team for truly making a day we will never forget! Polly and Warren xx
A first Class hotel great staff and deliver an excellent service all round. Food was of a very high standard both Breakfast & dinner choice of food was very good. I stayed first on the 14th July with my wife as attending our soons wedding it was so good i returned when on business in august and will stay agian always when in the area.
Flash back to my birthday January 28th -1951- had to have my 70th celebtation at home so for my 71st was kindly treat by daughters to stay overnight at Ivy Hill,we -have been for many occasions ,Afternoon T /Dance,my Mums wake 'R' 50th wedding anniversary evenin- very good service, professional n helpful friendly staff. we were kindly up graded to a 4 poster n champagne by the owner thank you once again,,wel be back in August for a 50th birthday lunch !! lu Susan N Michael Cornell xx
Stay clear of this hotel! Took twice as much money from my card. The manager was the rudest person I have ever met. My car was vandalised by one of their “very important guests” Overall nightmare !!! Do not consider this hotel
Excellent stay! Attended very special friends wedding here. Amazing staff! Only reason for a 4 and not 5 is that there's no Aircondition in the rooms, that for us was rough! Can't say enough about the staff all of them very welcoming stay here!
the staff are very friendly and helpful, food both in Bartellas Restaurant and at breakfast is excellent, hot and freshly cooked to order with a good choice. The room however needed an in-depth clean there were what i feared might be blood stains on the curtains and a lot of mold present in the bathroom particularly around the shower reading lights were hanging off the wall with bulbs that stuck up above the shade although at least this room had bulbs in all the lights unlike the last Best Western I stayed in! Only the friendliness of the staff and food quality makes my review an average, if the rooms were as good this it would excellent My advice get a good deal on the room and check it out before you agree to say here
We would just like to say a big "thank you" for all the arrangements you made for our anniversary lunch. The day couldn't have been better - everyone complimented the lovely food and service of your staff and even the sunny weather gave us an opportunity to sit in the grounds prior to the meal. The arrangements prior to the celebration with Libby and Charlotte were clear and even when we asked for a change to one element of the menu there was no fuss. We felt confident it was going to be a success as we have used your dining facilities before but you made us feel very special.
I travel a lot for work and had the best night sleep here. The room was comfortable temperature and had a fan to use which was great. It had a bath and shower which is always a bonus. Everything was super clean. As a lone woman I tend to use room service. The food was amazing. I had the mushroom and Halloumi burger and definitely recommend it. Breakfast was also good, fresh and tasty. Staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. The only negative is that you could do with more signage as I went passed the hotel twice!!! I will most certainly be back.
On the plus side, nice clean room, although the shower wasn't great and the window frame in the bathroom is mould infested. Pleasant staff, efficient check in. When I checked in, I clearly stated I intended to eat there. Ordered a drink on my room at the bar, no problem. Ordered my meal. Sat down to eat, ordered another drink. Again no problem. Photos attached of the meal. Tasty but not enough (9 chips?) and everything already on the plate would have been better. It's fish and chips. The silly paper and tiny pots are completely unnecessary. Retired to the bar after I'd eaten and ordered another drink. Was told I couldn't put it on my room as there was no pre-authorisation on my card. Of course, my wallet containing said card was in my room so I had to go and fetch it. Remember I'd paid for my room already and told them I was eating there. Nothing was said at the time. Small details perhaps, but it draws the experience closer to a Travelodge, with very little difference in price.
Superb visit, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Rooms were top quality, very comfortable bed. The food was fresh and delicious. Great value for money and close to main attractions, easy access and free parking. We will definitely return and I personally would love to visit again solo to enjoy “me” time.
Amazing hotel! Fantastic location off the A12 and so quick into either Chelmsford or Brentwood. Amazing staff - so polite, kind and helpful. Very accommodating to everyone and their bees. We stayed for a wedding and, as part of the bridal party, we really couldn't have asked for more. Everyone we spoke to was just lovely, warm and genuinely helpful. From directing suppliers, storing flowers, organising cabs to wishing everyone well on their way. We couldn't have asked for more and would recommend this hotel to anyone and everyone.
We held my husband's belated 60th birthday party in the Ivy Suite last night. Every detail, from the front of house to the catering was exceptional. The Chefs did a magnificent job and created a mouthwatering selection of canapés and bowl food which we have received so many compliments about from our guests. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and they are a delight to deal with. The rooms were very nicely appointed and very comfortable. We will definitely hold any further events here. Thank you so much for making our event so memorable.
We've stayed twice at this hotel and will return. Staff very friendly and the hotel is very comfortable. The restaurant is great. Lovely grounds, too. It's in a very good location for getting around the area.
Room very tiredwithh several light bulbs not working. Cleanliness good Staff atttitude and service very good or very poor Shower in the room was very weak and poor No wake up call when requested which is unforgiveable
We had a party to attend at the Ivy Hill Hotel on a Saturday night. Due to not having been away (like most) in a couple of years, we decided to stay for two nights and we were delighted that we did. We opted for a deluxe room and were given a nice corner room, with two windows, nice and spacious. The room was lovely and warm, although there was both a fan and a heater in the room, if needed. There was a shower over the bath, bathroom was a fair size, lots of lovely white towels, and a few essentials; shampoo, condition, shower gel. Tea and coffee making facilities in the room, together with an iron and ironing board. Lovely crisp sheets and comfy pillows - very happy. Lots of parking at this hotel. Just off the A12. Near to Ingatestone, Chelmsford and many other villages around. We did actually go to Braintree Freeport Village, which is about 20 mins away. Breakfast hit the spot. Freshly cooked and delicious. The party itself was great fun. Staff at the hotel were delightful. Could not fault it. And, although only 20 mins from where we live, it felt like a mini holiday. Would definitely return. Thank you to all the helpful staff.
Last month we held a private family celebration, attended by 40 people, in The Ivy Suite. The food, staff, service and facilities were excellent. We have had previous private functions there and, as with the others, this latest one could not be faulted. For this sort of function this is our "go to" place.
Daughter treated me to afternoon tea here. The hotel is a little old fashioned, there's plenty of parking and the staff were great, although we didn't get a menu or an option to choose what fillings to have in our sandwiches? Lovely scones and cute tasty small selection of cakes, flowing tea and coffee. Worth a visit.
The bathroom was quite dirty, this included the mirror and the toilet. the shower was horrific as the water pressure was non existent, difficult to even get a wash, the tv remote and Internet didn't work. Wouldn't stay again
Very good and helpful staff, lots of parking. It was a very good event, food and service were both very good. A professional but relaxed atmosphere. Enterance and exit may be a bit difficult if you have an exceptionally low car.
Enjoyed a fantastic New Years Eve celebration at this hotel after a year of uncertainty. We booked late as like everyone else I am sure, we didnt know what Covid restrictions would be put upon us come Christmas time 2021. The staff were amazing as was the food and we felt safe and distanced as tables not too close together. There was only two of us but we paled up (at a distance ) with another couple next to us of similar age and we got along fine. The lady and myself danced together too as both our husbands not too keen on dancing. As this was our first time at this hotel I cannot praise enough the staff and the food and the value for money of this wonderul evening. The entertainment was fantastic with a 3 piece band including a female singer who also played the saxophone. Come just before midnight the staff were given a drink (as were we all ) to bring in the New Year and they then partied for us all on the dance floor. And boy did they party which was well deserved and very entertaining. Cant wait to rebook this wonderful evening for the end of this year God willing. Thank you Libby and your team. On the negative side we paid more than the special rate for our room overnight because we booked late and they had all been taken. Our room was larger but a twin was all they had and the shower did not work at all. I had to use the shower spray on the bath taps which isnt easy at our age and my husband just went home dirty as couldnt cope with that.
Thank you to Libby and her team for all their hard work, consideration and kindness which made Rachel and Tom's Wedding 29th December 2021 such a special event. As a family we were made to feel so welcome from the arrival of our relatives allowing us the time and space to be together the night before the Wedding after the long two year separation because of Covid. Arrangements on the day were carried out very professionally but again with warmth and care. The food was excellent and everything was perfect. Six years ago the wedding for our eldest daughter was also held at Ivy Hill and we were confident to return again. We would highly recommend.
Having been a regular visitor to Bartella's , this Christmas dinner was one of the best. Despite the panic of a new strain of Covid, the staff were excellent and very professional. The layout of tables fitted the criteria of social distancing. The food was excellent, and I would recommend this restaurant as they cater for many differing dietary requirements, as though it was normal. The only "complaint" is when visiting the ladies and washing hands after there was no protective hand gel before returning to the restaurant. Nonetheless a great big thank you to everyone who made this such a great experience
What a lovely evening we had. 20 of us from our choir had a wonderful time. Staff were really friendly. The food was excellent. The decorations were beautiful. We loved the DJ and we danced all evening. An excellent Christmas celebration! Thank you to everyone involved for making our evening so very enjoyable.
Dirty room, mouldy bathroom, faeces in the toilet. Staff generally came across as “not really interested” Restaurant and staff in there were fantastic and food was outstanding. Probably wouldn't take too much effort to tidy up and spruce up rooms, and get some staff who are interested in working there!
I organised a Christmas Party event, for a group of local friends. We had booked the IVY-2 Private Room, for our party. The Best Western event organiser (Charlotte), was very professional, and was happy to arrange for our group's needs to be accomodated, and in a very pleasant and efficient manner. On the evening, the staff were very attentative, without being intrusive, and the manageress (Libby) ensured that all went well, and according to plan. We would have no hesitation in booking with the Best Western again, as they provided an excellent service, for our party support. Well done, and thank you!
I arranged a lunch for 18 people in one of the private rooms. Due to the concern regarding Covid, 5 people decided not to attend. Charlotte, on behalf of the hotel, was very understanding and changed the arrangements without any hesitation. The lunch was very well organised with lovely tasty food and very professional serving staff. I have no hesitation in recommending the restaurant and private dining at the hotel.
Excellent Christmas party night here last week. Fabulous venue for a good fun night. Management and team superb, really friendly and helpful. There was a varied choice on the menu and the food was really good, as was the band and DJ. Would highly recommend for a party night out.
28/11/21 had a fantastic celebration lunch at the Hotel for 30 friends and family for my 60th bday Sunday lunch. Charlotte the co-ordinator of the booking was excellent throughout the pre event process and hotel manager Libby and her deputy on the day (sorry! Forgot her name ) were exceptional on the day. Service was very good and there appeared to be plenty of staff supporting - despite COVID conditions in the sector where staff are difficult to be found. I was able to give the guests a good menu selection to choose from pre event and the food on the day without exception was very good - without taking into account volume of peeps etc. We had already eaten prior to booking in Bartellas - the hotel restaurant and knew we were unlikely to be disappointed. The guests throughly enjoyed the experience and we also took the orangery for arrival drinks which also provided an outlet for friends with two young children during the meal, and we had exclusive use of the ‘Margaretting suite' entrance which was ideal. Would highly recommend. Would add friends stayed at the hotel on the night and were also well looked after and said their room was ‘lovely'. Thank you Libby and team.
The Inner Wheel Club of Wickford chose this venue to celebrate our 50th Charter Anniversary meal. What a great place. The food and service were excellent. Thank you to all the hotel staff, who were attentive and helpful, and made it such a lovely event.
We choose the Ivy Hill Hotel to hold our daughter's 18th birthday celebration and we were not disappointed. We were so impressed by the events team and how well everything was organised and managed. From the first meeting right through to the end of the party all ran smoothly and the evening was a complete success. This was due to the hard work and effort put in by the friendly events team and the attentive bar and serving staff. The food was amazing (we had canapes handed round throughout the evening) and we had many compliments from our guests. We also stayed overnight in the hotel with some of our family members and enjoyed breakfast the next morning. Again this exceeded our expectations. The whole weekend was excellent and I would highly recommended holding an event here. Many thanks to all involved
Thoroughly enjoyed my stay at this hotel. It was exceptionally clean and the staff were all very friendly and accommodating. The hotel is very conveniently located and the bar/lounge area is relaxing. The food was excellent and I had the best nights sleep in a long while. I'll definitely be staying at the Ivy Hill again when business takes me to this area.
Best Western Ivy Hill Hotel We visited the Ivy Hill hotel for a two night stay in connection with a wedding that we were attending at the hotel. We drove to the venue and it is conveniently located off junction 14 of the A12. On arrival there was there is a good amount of (free) parking available for guests and patrons. Arriving early afternoon, we checked in and the lady on reception was very helpful with the arrangements. We were allowed access to our room as it was ready for our arrival and after settling in we decided to explore the immediate area and came across the small village of Margaretting which is just under a half mile walk from the hotel. Our room had a double bed with separate bathroom. The room was well equipped with a wardrobe, wall mirror, table & chair, bedside units, a dressing table and a good number of plug sockets including USB sockets. Tea and coffee making facilities were provided although we had to change the mugs provided as they had tea stains in them. The room appeared clean and maintained though the wall paper was flaking near to window and the single glazed wooden window frames were showing signs of age. My wife's pillow case had signs of mould on it though we did not discover this until the following morning. The bathroom had a toilet, wash basin and a bath with shower fitted and a good amount of flat space to place toiletries. There was a wood laminate floor and the walls were tiled throughout. Staying over the Sunday night prior to the wedding, we dined with some of the wedding party and our party of approximately 14 persons were seated at two tables. We chose our meals from a pre-set menu and the quality of the food was very good in terms of taste and presentation. Unfortunately, the service was a bit slow with a three course meal taking three hours to complete. This is not a criticism of the table waiting staff who were very friendly and helpful, so perhaps they were a bit understaffed on that evening. Breakfast the following morning was held in a sunny well-lit dining room and consisted of a buffet breakfast with fruit juices, cereal, fruit and toast, and in addition a full English breakfast and teas & coffees ordered at the table. The waitress who was running the breakfast room was excellent, very friendly and helpful with people's requests. The breakfast was very good quality just what was needed on the morning of the wedding! The wedding service and the subsequent reception was very well organised. Fortunately for the happy couple, the sun shone after the service and they were able to get some lovely photos in the hotel's extensive wooded grounds. The food served in the evening was of excellent composition and quality. The following mornings breakfast was once again a buffet breakfast but with the English breakfast being a ‘help yourself' from heated containers. Checking out was a straightforward procedure and we left the hotel to travel on to Southend for the day. All in all an enjoyable couple of days at the Ivy Hill hotel, we would say that without exception. All of the staff that we came into contact with from waiters, reception and room change staff were always polite and helpful. We would certainly consider a stay here again if we were in the area or recommend it to others.
My room was clean, with drink making facilities, space for hanging clothes, hair dryer and ironing board. Bathroom very clean. Did have slight mishap operating the shower and the water coming into the bath was very hot but I did manage to sort it out. Had all the facilities I needed, wi-fi, restaurant, friendly helpful staff. Excellent breakfast, used the bar, function room and restaurant
My wife and I stayed three nights here to attend the wedding of two of our friends. It is a lovely hotel, the food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. Our room was large and comfortable, scrupulously clean, and obviously very well maintained.
It was my partners birthday and I had booked the dome at Bartellas for the evening. As there was a hotel on site I decided to stay so we could both drink and enjoy the evening. The staff in the hotel and restaurant were attentive and bubbly. Made you feel like a priority and nothing was too much to ask. The restaurant staff didn't forget about us in the dome either they checked in on us regularly. Our food was delicious and warm. The dome was also beautiful and nice and warm for us as they give you a heater which you can manage yourself. A proper treat and the domes are great as a surprise or special occasion! The hotel exceeded my expectations. It was clean and the rooms were perfect. We did only have one towel though and our phone was not working in the room so we had to share. It was just one of those things and when checking out they were very apologetic. As it was only for one night we was not too fussed. Breakfast was great lots of hot and cold food options, juices and hot drinks. Perfect for you to help yourself and eat what you want, something for everyone. Would recommend this hotel particularly if you have a special occasion and want to eat in the restaurant and stay overnight which was the purpose of my visit. Thank you we hope to return in the future
We had originally booked a Golden Wedding celebration for 40 family and and friends in July 2020. Covid meant a postponement and we rebooked for July 2021 - again Covid intervened so we rescheduled for October. Through this process the staff team were co-operative and patient and offered us every help. When we finally got to the day the event fully matched our expectations. The venue is well situated and very pleasant, the food was good and the service excellent. Everything ran smoothly and there was good attention to detail. We have received very positive feedback from guests. The whole team went the extra mile in enabling this event to happen under difficult circumstances.
Myself and my Dad arranged a surprise meal for my Mum for their 40th wedding anniversary. Due to having 3 babies in our family we wanted somewhere with a private room. We came across the Ivy Hill Hotel and went to have a look at their function rooms. We were shown around by Charlotte who was most helpful. From booking, they couldn't have been more accommodating. We were able to make some amendments to the menu to offer different food choices which was much appreciated. On the day, the wrong room had been set up but the staff quickly resolved this and moved the tables etc to the correct room. The food was of great quality and the staff very helpful and prompt. We weren't rushed at all and were left to enjoy ourselves in the room and also the patio area directly outside our room using then patio doors. We had a wonderful meal and would highly recommend the hotel and restaurant.
Every thing was good about our stay, good location in a lovely building, friendly staff good food, nice rooms, will stay again if in the area. Set in lovely grounds but with easy access to A12 but not noisy.
Having had our work conference at the Ivy Hill Hotel now for several years I am confident that the staff never disappoint. Had our annual event last week and I can honestly say I do not need to worry about any of the arrangements at the hotel as the team just deliver and arrange everything for me. Nothing is an issue or a problem. Thank you to all for your help again - see you next year!
We chose the Ivy Hill to celebrate my daughter's sweet 16 murder mystery dinner and disco. The venue was absolutely perfect. The decor was elegant and the staff were very polite and helpful. We had a room for dinner with an adjoining room for a disco with a dance floor. The teenagers felt very special and had lots of fun. I am very grateful to the staff for the attention to detail and for helping everything go absolutely smoothly.
The Ivy Hill Hotel is an ideal venue to host a party/function. Last weekend we hosted an 80th birthday lunch for my dad for 42 guests (this was rescheduled from the previous year due to Covid). We had pre receptions drinks on the private terrace followed by a three-course meal with tea and coffee in the Ivy Suite. It was fantastic from start to finish. Corresponding with Libby and Charlotte was effortless, nothing was too much trouble and their attention to detail was perfect. The food was delicious and the service was exceptional. Special mention must go to Libby (Hotel Manager) who co-ordinated the function on the day, making my dad feel like a VIP and Jordan who took the time and trouble to escort our less mobile guests to their tables. Thank you also to Emily, Lewis, Abby and Olivia who made sure guests had everything they needed. We have been to this hotel on several occasions for meals and functions and have never been disappointed. We are always welcomed back with open arms and can't wait to return again soon. Thank you everyone x
Perfect venue for the Celebration of Life for our two brothers who sadly passed away last year. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Special thanks to Libby, Charlotte, Jordan and all the staff on Saturday. Friends and family all said what a great venue it was. We chose the 'Afternoon Tea' package and the food was delicious. Would definitely recommend the Ivy Hill House Hotel for a special event.
Hotel really lovely. Grounds, breakfast and rooms are fab. Except the bathrooms. Desperately need upgrading. The shower was dreadful, dripped out. Couldn't have a bath as handle you need to move was stuck. If you are reading this, it was room 27. Very disappointing.
We held our wedding ceremony and evening celebrations at the hotel and we cannot thank Libby and all the staff enough for a most fantastic day! The food was superb and we received so many compliments from our guests about the quality of the food and service. The ceremony room and dining rooms were perfect for the occasion, we really couldn't have wished for better. A perfect day! Ashley and Debbie
This place is tired, in desperate need of modernisation. It smells like a school canteen and does not seem to have been cleaned since the early 80s! Staff embers apathy and lack of care was evident. Please do not waste your money!
Looks like badly converted old people's home. Decor from something out of the 70s! My 93 year old nan has more modern home. Beds and pillows so hard, one side of my body went numb. Carpet needed cleaning, walls needed painting, rusty radiators and generally not clean, cobwebs in all corners. Awful sewage smell in bathroom, which did not improve even after we sprayed with air freshener and perfume. I could not use to shower during stay as just not clean. No air con but fan was provided, this was as long as we were happy to breathe in the 2 inch thick dust that covered it! Extractor fan outside our window was so loud we had to close our window during night, making the musty room smell even more unbearable. We had to ask for extra toilet paper as only had half a used roll in room on arrival, even though staying 4 nights. Receptionist was half asleep, we stood in front of her for several minutes before she lifted her head from her snooze! Requested double room but were given two single beds we had to push together. We could not wait to leave! Never to return!
A huge thank you to all the staff for making our wedding day, a day I will never forget. Libby and Charlotte could not be more helpful and attentive. All the staff were amazing and polite. The food was out of this world, guests dietary requirements were catered for without fuss. Everyone liked there rooms, we had a mixture of types from twin to deluxe to interconnecting, The suite was breath taking, so spacious and the shower was a dream. Communication was amazing through all the planning. We cannot wait to return for our anniversary.
Hotel room was nothing like advertised, staff was moody so we didn't report any issues. Only good part was dinner in the outdoor dome and the waitress and waiter that served us there were super lovely
We held a celebration lunch fir 24 in the ivy suite It was really well organised. Up front by the event team. Food was fantastic Service great A lovely function room with doors out onto the garden A nice bar area too Lots of parking
I thoroughly enjoyed my, room only, overnight stay at the Ivy Hill Hotel. The bed was extremely comfortable with crisp, cool sheets. The grounds were a delight to walk in. Using the Reflections Pool and outdoor Jacuzzi made this a truly memorable mini break.
I booked her for my partners birthday. Beautiful grounds and restaurant areas . We booked early check in and late check out, we paid extra for this although was quite expensive £50 but we wanted to make the most of it. I booked a dome for evening dinner which was lovely, worth the £20 for the experience however charge probably not really necessary. The food was out of this world everything cooked to perfection and the best I have had I a long time. Would go back in a hear5 beat….. my only grip was that we order drinks from the younger waiter but never got them. ……. Our room was very spacious and nicely laid out. Cleanliness of the room was not great, we had to ask for toilet roll as there was non and towels and mugs for coffee. The bin in the bathroom had their previous guests rubbish in and the drapes on the bed were torn and thick with dust, also dust accumulation of carpet around bed edges . I felt this should have been deep cleaner due to COVID so didn't see why it was like this, doors to bathroom dirty and the shower screen seals need replacing. ……. On a plus side the bed was very comfy and we slept well. Only other criticism is that due to four poster bed you can't watch tv properly as the post is in the way. …… we asked for champagne flutes and got charged £5 to use them which again is not needed. That's where I feel the hotel let's it self down with high charge rates for extras, staff were all lovely, although a little more training would be of help when dealing with reception duties for a staff member as she couldn't deal with bill issues etc ……. All round we enjoyed our stay and would love to go here again.
Just want to say a massive thanks to Libby and her whole team. We had our wedding at the Ivy Hill at the end of July. Everyone we had contact with was very accommodating and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The day was run very smoothly and we were put at ease, the setting is beautiful with lovely gardens for photographs. Thanks also to the chefs our afternoon tea was very yummy, every guest commented on it. We also had an evening meal in one of the dome, all bartellas staff were also amazing. Thanks again to each and everyone at the Ivy Hill.
Avoid avoid avoid - super cars revving their engines all night We came to This hotel for an overnight stay for a friends get together at their home in Fryerning. The hotel was clean and the people were very polite however when we got back we were outside for dinner and the night was completely ruined by the wedding next door at a different venue - the cars were revving their engines all night from 7.30pm until 1am!!! Then when they left the venue they were wheel spinning and racing each other to the point it was ridiculous and scary. Avoid this hotel at all costs if you want to Peace and quiet.
Great service, courteous and professional staff and smart well presented room. We arrived before the normal booking in time but the staff rallied round and found us a room which enabled us to book in and get over to our daughters 40th birthday party without undue delay.
We stayed in this hotel as it was close to a friends party. The hotel is well laid out, beautiful gardens, very well adapted for Covid, friendly staff, and great value for money too. Would definitely stay again.
Booked a room for my daughter's wedding night, this was, from my side a standard booking, but the hotel put a few things in place, without being asked and without telling us, which made the newly weds so happy! This type of service is probably standard for the Ivy Hills, Iv never stayed here myself, but always heard very good reports. My son in law said it the best hotel they have stayed in, the room was beautiful, clean and comfy, with the most loving staff. When picking them up in the morning, I noticed the restaurant pods out side, I think I might have to book. I met the man who owned this hotel many years ago a couple of times, Mr Bartella, he was a really lovely man and it seems Best Western have inherited his humanity. Thank you Ivy Hill for giving my daughter a fantastic night. Andy
I have stayed here many many times and the hotel and its staff are always first class. Everyone is so friendly. Room service is excellent and the food is superb. Nothing is too much trouble. Lovely settings. Cannot fault in any way.
When we arrived our room was uncleaned but the Reception staff dealt with the issue efficiently and we were offered a free drink at the bar. Our room was large and adequate, although the carpet could have done with an update. We didn't have breakfast but the evening meal we had in the Restaurant was good, although we had to wait to be seated despite being greeted politely. Thereis plenty of parking and the room was very quiet.
The hotel recently hosted a wake for our party of guests and we were really impressed. Despite very late notice, the hotel provided vegan and GF alternatives to the boxed afternoon tea boxes and we all thoroughly enjoyed their contents. In addition, the staff were very efficient with regular taking of drinks orders and their warm table service. Nothing was too much trouble. We would certainly be back. Thank you again.
Very good hotel if you can put up with the constant noise from the adjacent A12. Room has all the facilities you would need except for a grab handle over the bath. I felt uncomfortable getting in and out of the shower. Food and service in the restaurant excellent.
We have stayed at this hotel several times over the past few years. It is a convenient location for us to visit family and friends in Essex. The rooms are clean and functional, maybe a bit tired and in need of sprucing up, but perfectly ok for a one or two night stay. Good value for money. The staff are always very pleasant and accommodating. The breakfasts are very good, as is the food in the restaurant in the evenings. We intend to keep staying at the Ivy Hill on a regular basis.
We had a four day business trip to Chelmsford and stayed at the Ivy Hill. Bearing in mind we have just come out of the lockdown for hotels etc. This stay was superb, great attention given to covid regulations, a warm welcome on arrival and every request was executed with minimal fuss. Would certainly recommend and stay at this hotel again. May I add a special thank you to James who attended to all our requests in a polite, professional manner. James you are member of the staff the management should be proud of.
Had a lovely night away bed and pillows so comfy great nights sleep unable to have bath as plug not holding water shower very very disappointing had a bottle sparkling water in room flat and out of date bit disappointed with this should have been checked service from staff great enjoyed break Had meal in restaurant delicious
Very Easy to find In a nice environment Very Easy arrival Staff friendly and professional Good standard business hotel Common areas not very plush But clean and tidy Food better than expected With room service available
A wonderful Valentine's Afternoon Tea Takeway was arranged by the hotel, and thoroughly enjoyed by all. Beautifully boxed up, everything was tasty, fresh and gorgeous!! To comply with current regulations, the boxes were brought to the car by staff suitably wearing PPE, so not only innovative but safe as well!
I was visiting the area on a course and can honestly say it was a real treat to stay at Ivy Hill Hotel. The hotel had only been reopened from lockdown 2.0 and the staff went out of their way to ensure stay was good. The Chefs in Bartellas attached are honestly a hidden talent. Throughly recommended and I will be back ! Thank you.
Thank you to all the wonderful staff for make our stay so enjoyable. Our room was clean , quiet and well presented we slept well. We will continue using you for future events and dinners at Bartella's ❤️
Due to covid-19, we had our wedding plans completely changed last minute to a sudden change in numbers (2 weeks notice). I contacted The Ivy Hill Hotel amongst other local hotels to enquire about possibly being able to hold a 15 people sit down wedding reception and a room for the night. I was emailed back pretty much straight away by events coordinator Charlotte. After lots of back and forth with Charlotte listening to all my questions/worries/requests, we decided to go with this hotel. The customer service was great. No amount of questions I was throwing at her seemed to be too much. In 2 weeks, Charlotte and her team at the Ivy Hill were able to pull of such a beautiful wedding reception for us. The service on the night was amazing. The staff were lovely and so understanding. We couldn't recommend this hotel enough! The room we stayed in was also lovely and the full English breakfast was to die for! I would return to this hotel in a heartbeat!
I have stayed here before and have always had a great experience and this time was no exception. All of the staff are very welcoming, friendly and efficient. Room was spacious and very clean. Our meal in the restaurant (we ate in one of the domes) was delicious, as was our breakfast the next morning.
Had a family meal at the Ivy last night and hired a garden pod... What a great night, food was lovely, staff were really friendly and polite and the pod experience was fantastic... would really recommend a visit.
We recently stayed for 2 nights and had an absolutely amazing time. Every single member of staff was friendly and couldn't do enough for us. The rooms were spotless and the food was fresh and extremely high quality. Honestly this is a real hidden gem. Absolutely perfect ! We will be back. Thank you so much.
The team here are fantastic. The food is fresh and tasty. The towels are the most luxurious I have ever experienced. Room temperature was perfect for a great nights sleep. The car park has enough space. Also the gardens are well kept and very pleasant to sit or take a walk in.
We travel back to Essex for family visits every few weeks and always stay at the Ivy Hill Hotel as it is an inexpensive place to stay but with decent facilities. The rooms are comfortable and clean. The staff are very pleasant and extremely helpful. The restaurant serves lovely food. What's not to like?!
When we found ourselves with nowhere to stay after our move fell through, the hotel could not have done more to help us! We needed a room for at least a fortnight that was quiet, with strong internet and wouldnt send me dollally having to work from there at least 10 hours a day. They did all of that and more including giving me a large desk and office chair. All the staff were kind, attentive (special mention to Claire!) and genuinely caring. We didnt eat too much in the hotel but when we did the food was lovely and could see why the restaurant is always packed. All the staff have our thanks and especially the wonderful manager who sorted this out for us. Thank you!
Took my daughter out for Afternoon Tea and although it was on one of there quiet days we loved it. I had some dietary restrictions which I told them when I booked and they didn't need reminding on our arrival. It wasn't the usual finger sandwiches served it was nicer. The cakes were delicious as were the warm scones. Staff were lovely. Would recommend and would go back.
My niece, her husband and daughter were booked in for Afternoon Tea on 15th August to celebrate their Wedding Anniversary. For health reasons they'd booked a dome in the garden, but on arrival it was pelting down with rain, so the staff put them in a lovely room to themselves. The Afternoon Teas were enjoyed by the Anniversary couple as well as their daughter (especially the strawberries dipped in chocolate!) The staff couldn't have been more helpful and a wonderful afternoon was had by all.
Had Dinner with my Sister, thought it would be a treat as she's nervous of eating out at the moment. But what an amazing experience.......eating outside in a beautiful dome all to ourselves. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food 5 Star. Would be great to go back and celebrate a special occasion in your own stunning dome. Thankyou Ivy Hill
My Husband and I had gotten married at The Ivy Hill in 2016 and it literally was the best day, mainly due to how our day was handled by everyone of the staff at venue. We have been back for our anniversary every year (apart from 1!) Every year it just gets better and better! So this year, when I saw the advertisement on their Facebook page for the Igloo Domes I had to enquire! The team bent over backwards so we could be one of the first to be in the domes and it didn't disappoint! I would highly recommend to anyone that is considering booking, to get in quick as it is an amazing experience with unbelievable food. Obviously we have eaten here before but each meal is so lovely and some how manages to top the last! I had the lamb breast and my husband had the fillet steak, I can't even put in to words how good the food was! Also I had the peanut butter cheesecake, which I think was a chef's special, if it is available any time you visit and you like peanut butter, you need to have this! For anyone worried during these crazy times with Covid-19, the hotel have made sure that hand sanitizer is freely available throughout and the hotel is kept to an extremely clean standard (as always). It was also lovely to feel some sort of normality on our visit, even with social distancing and extra sanitising in place it just felt normal which was amazing. It just made the whole time we were there feel so much more relaxing. I cannot recommend the Igloo Domes highly enough. They are a brilliant experience for anyone getting together for a meal out that just feels normal. Thank you to the whole team, especially Libby, at The Ivy Hill and Bartellas for the best anniversary. Mr and Mrs Babbage
My wife and I had a great lunch last Friday with my daughter and her family. As usual the wonderful staff and lovely food was up to our expectations. We visit regularly and will continue to do so now that things are returning to normal.
First place we stayed at after lockdown eased. Very friendly staff and spotlessly clean. We had an upgrade which was nice. Beautiful gardens to walk around. We ate in the restaurant, Bartellas, which had absolutely fantastic food and service. Would not hesitate to stay here again.
Had a lovely stay at this hotel, first day it re-opened on the 4th July, was welcome at the desk, there was a screen at the desk, so felt absolutely safe in the current circumstances, all information was provided clearly about my stay, key was given sanitised in a sealed packet, staff were very helpful, I was provided with an email with all room service info, you can text or email or call for anything you need. Overall our stay was lovely, bed was extremely comfortable, and the room was immaculately clean. Will definatly be staying again.
Excellent service provided from the time I booked some 11 months before the event, Aileen was pivotal to everything running smoothly, I cannot fault her at all and she had our best interests at heart at all times. Excellent rooms, excellent food, excellent service by all the staff. Would recommend this in a heartbeat.
Nice hotel with excellent front of house and catering staff. Both food and drink were of good standard served in warm homely surroundings. The room although nicely decorated had a poor location on the ground floor but as we were only staying for one night was just about acceptable until we entered the bathroom to find very sloppily unfolded towels which led us to look closer and found the taps were awful and had not been cleaned. The beds were very comfortable but the creaking of the floors with the noise of the people in the room above would be a problem if staying any longer. A really lovely hotel but sometimes it is the little things that make the difference.
We had a family dinner party last weekend to celebrate my Mums 90th birthday. So pleased with the service we received at Ivy Hill. They couldn't have been more helpful or accommodating. The food was delicious and the waiting staff were very helpful and pleasant. We had the Ingatestone room which was perfect for our party of 22, lovely layout with its own bar area and conservatory. Everything was set up beautifully when we arrived. We had to request a last minute dietary requirement and there was no fuss, gave us a lovely alternative. We all thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and my Mum was thrilled with her celebration. We will definitely book again for celebrations in the future.
We have had the best meal and stay this weekend. It was a celebration for my birthday and a break from stress. The manager Libby was a particular star, so warm and welcoming plus nothing was a problem. What an asset too the hotel. ♡ x Natasha & Danny
We are staying again and everyone is very welcoming.Food and people are very nice and the bedroom we stay in has a very big walk in shower not a bath which we both like. Everyone friendly and a a very good breakfast - i dont think we eat again today!
i stay here reguarly due to business in the area. the rooms are great and comforatable., The new menu in the restuarant has a good selection and tasted good and good staff are friendly and very helpful could not ask for more.
A nice hotel however for those who only have certain allowance for meals, there is simply not enough choice. Most of the menu choices are higher cost meals so are no good for contractors or business employees who only have a £15 meal allowance from their companies. I visit this part of Essex at least once a week for the entire year and have so far not booked this hotel until now. Sadly, I will avoid booking it in the future. There are a lot more, better choice hotels within 5 miles of the Best Western Ivy Hill Hotel, where you will get far more choice and better value for corporately funded employees. Sorry Best Western, you've missed a trick.
Nice mid range hotel with friendly, helpful staff. Plenty of meeting and function rooms plus pleasant restaurant and bar area. Delicious prawn and belly pork starter in restaurant and good house wine.
22 of our family met at the Ivy Hill Hotel for a Sunday lunch. We booked Ivy 1 function room and had 3 circular tables, which makes it easy to speak to each other. We'd planned this several months in advance, choosing 3 courses from a varied adult menu. We also had 6 children who had their own menu. (Children 2 and under eat free). The room was really well laid out and we were advised to have a seating plan and place cards, with menu choices listed. This reminds people what they've ordered and helps the kitchen and waiting staff. Gluten free courses are available too. This function room is adjacent to its own bar, where we met and had drinks before and after the meal as well. This gives plenty of floor room for children to play in, as long as they're kept an eye on! The staff are lovely - very friendly and professional - just what you need. Overall, we had a lovely family time together and will more than likely book this again next year.
The room we had was appalling for the price charged. Cobwebs everywhere,no radiator in bathroom and light in corridor outside flashing continuously. Breakfast was cold,to say the least, and very uninteresting - shame because we had a lovely New Year's Eve do there but you really need to get your act together for the rooms, felt REALLY ripped off!!!!!!!
We stayed at the hotel for the annual Sweet Charity Ball again this year. One of group did have an issue with her room (the bathroom had mould on the ceiling) but this was quickly dealt with and she was re-roomed to another part of the hotel. Rooms are generally well appointed and comfortable and we love the quirky little nooks and seating areas. As ever, breakfast was excellent and the staff are great. Thank you for another nice stay!
Attended the New Year's Eve party and stayed overnight. Hotel is clean and staff are polite and attentive. Rooms are spacious and have everything to make it a comfortable stay. Meal was lovely and waitress/ waiter service was great. Entertainment was excellent and music for all ages. Recommend for all occasions.
We stayed in December for the ABBA party night for a work Christmas party, we had a great time, the food and service were great and the entertainment was good fun. We also stayed over, the room was a decent size and clean, bathroom was larger than a standard hotel room which was nice. Only down side is our view out the window was a flat roof and another wall. The breakfast the next day was also lovely, buffet style but hot and very well stocked, staff were on hand to refill the tea or coffee. All in all a great stay
Hotel looks lovely on arrival and staff are very friendly. The bed was comfortable, and the breakfast was lovely. The only downfall from our stay was the mouldy bathroom, which made the room smell husky.
Recently had the pleasure to meet family here for our Christmas Sunday lunch. The food was excellent and the service both on the day and during the organisation was excellent. recommend it and will be returning.
Always love to stay at Best Western Ivy Hill. Every time I go there it feels so warm and friendly, and just makes me smile. Staff team are so helpful and nothing is any trouble. Hotel is comfortable and food is good, with lots of choices. Go for lunch, dinner and/or an overnight stay with breakfast bit whatever you do just go......
Our third Christmas party at the restaurant and over night stay. This is an excellent place well appointed and full of charm. The Christmas venue is a wonderful location, great food, great staff and super party and Xmas music. I can't fault the place which caters for singles and groups plus couples we are already to repeat our experience next year. The breakfast this morning was also first class.
Having just returned from our Christmas lunch I would like to thank you and all the staff for the organisation and presentation of all the meals. Everyone present enjoyed their selection and wanted me to give our compliments to the chef and all staff for a very enjoyable meal.
What a fabulous evening. Firstly the rooms have been refurbished and are very stylish. Traditional Christmas meal was superb .. turkey -dark meat and white, roast potatoes, parsnips and sprouts.. hot and tasty. Berry cheesecake to die for. Staff were all lovely, helpful and polite. Nothing too much trouble. We stayed the night and made use of the late night bar (until 2.30 am!!)
Good welcome with choice of seating. Good ambiance and serving swift and efficient. The Xmas meal was well cooked and presented appropriately. It was tasty and the profitteroles were light and tasty. An excellent meal with good service.
we booked to have an afternoon tea for my daughters baby shower for 24 of us, & I have to say I was so impressed. We had our own private room, which was already set up with 3 tables all laid out. A table for all the presents & then we needed another 3 . Nothing was too much trouble .Every little detail thought of, even down to sharing the cake out we asked for some serviettes & we were given the foil containers with the lids, which was just perfect. I would like to say a very big Thank you to all the staff there that made our day extra special, and for going that extra mile
Amazing!! We celebrated my Nans 80th in one of the private dining rooms. The food, service and staff were amazing. The whole party were blown away and haven't stopped commenting on how amazing it was. From booking to leaving this evening every member of staff has been amazing. A big thankyou to Charlotte and Aileen for helping with the booking and service today. The food was gorgeous and the service was impeccable. The room was set up beautifully and was a wonderful place to celebrate my Nans 80th birthday! Couldn't fault anything today. Absolutely fantastic!!
We spent about £135 to stay here which was far to much. We came back to our room from a wedding at about 11pm and it was so cold. The windows had been left open. The bathroom was shaby and tierd looking. The breakfast service was slow and poor. The one good part was the reception staff who were polite and appeared to listen to my complaining. By the way I rarely ever complain.
Nice enough hotel, newly-ish refurbished room, but not the same standard in the bathroom. But then....they charged an extra 25 Pounds for checking in at noon in stead of 3 pm, even if the room was ready. Arriving with plane and rental car we didn't have much choice. Never experienced or heard of before, and definitely a big thumbs down for me.
This hotel is tired. it requires a good clean, some painting and decorating and generally needs brightening up. we booked and deluxe twin room which was huge, but dark, dingy and very stuffy although heating wasn't on. no window in bathroom and bedroom window let in all the noise and fumes from A12. bathroom door lock was broken so you couldn't get in or out. room was filthy, thick dust everywhere. housekeeping had to clean before we would go in there. there were no towels in bathroom but they did fetch some for us, although beds were comfortable it was stuffy all night, there were doors banging most of the night and we were awake all night. we were staying for two nights, but checked out after the first and we were refunded for our cancelled night. All the staff where professional, polite and very very helpful. Best Western need to spend some money on upgrading there hotels, their staff are very good but the company are letting them down.
We stayed in a four poster room very comfortable bed and lovely room. Super friendly staff and nothing was to much trouble. Breakfast was good quality produce and even did a separate scrambled egg, when requested. Lovey grounds and comfortable bar area, definitely stay again and try the restaurant.
My £130 room could do with a coat of paint, bathroom tired. Central heating for whole wing was like a machine gun going off as the radiator valve was sticking all night The function we attended in in Ivy suite had hardly anyone buying drinks due to cost. Central london trendy bars are cheaper Wish I'd stayed in a Premier Inn at least my nights sleep is guaranteed
Stayed here as part of a bridal party for a wedding over at Crondon Park in July. The hotel is lovely and rooms are of a good size. The staff we came across were all very polite and friendly. Our only issue was the heat in the rooms was really unpleasant, it was only 25 degrees outside yet it was absolutely scorching in the rooms and you could only open the windows a fraction. Dread to think how awful it would be in there during one of the heatwaves in the summer. There was also heavy construction work going on nearby which we were not made aware of which started very early in the morning and was extremely loud. Would have rated 5* if not for these two niggles.
This isn on a stay,,,, - After having meals/ drinks/ gatherings I'm sure the hotel would be a good choice,- we have stayed in other 'Western's'..This is to say we sadly had to hold a 'wake' here for my Mum, earlier in the year,/All staff were helpful. caring & understanding, the rooms gave it a' softer' touch.flowers on the tables, could have balloons/photos out , film show.buffet was very good, a lot of our guests said what an excellent 'posh'choice , ..so thankz to all were all very grateful & know Mum would have been pleased.
Recently I organised an Afternoon Tea for a party of 32 people from our local Ladies Probus Group. We chose the Memorable Afternoon Tea. Members arrived at 1pm and were able to purchase their own drinks from the bar. We sat down at 1.30pm with a broad selection of food which covered a combination of platters for lunch and tea. Tea was free flowing, staff very attentive and a Memorable time was had by all. Would definitely recommend.
We were attending an evening wedding reception at Blakehall so we selected the Ivy Hill as it looked good and is only a 20 minute drive away from the wedding venue. The staff make this hotel. We arrived mid afternoon on a Saturday and there was a function in progress so there were a few limitations on where we could go, however when I asked if we could get food a more than helpful lady showed us to a lounge area, offered to get us drinks and then took food orders and served the food to us in the lounge. We were missing one bath towel in the room but this was dealt with most efficiently when we mentioned it at reception. The room we had was spacious and clean and the bed was comfortable. Most importantly I did not detect any annoying squeaks or noises in the hotel. The beds and doors seem to be silent. A previous reviewer has mentioned how hot the rooms are and this true. The windows can be opened and a fan is provided but there is no air conditioning. One other point is that there is not a fridge in the room. Otherwise all good. The breakfast was excellent. All the usual fried stuff with a continental option, cereals and fruit etc. There are only about 30 rooms so it is not chaotic. Having stayed in many hotels of a similar standard I would say this is very good and the staff are the best I have experienced.
From the minute we walked into the hotel we were treated in a friendly and courteous manner. Aileen showed us around and then discussed our wedding plans, dates etc. We booked the bridal suite for the night before and the wedding day, a lovely room with everything provided. Breakfast both days was superb with a vast choice, the waiting staff were polite and helpful. Our wedding day was fab, the manager libby was helping to set up the room and could not have been nicer. Aileen guided us through the day perfectly and she was faultless. We had a fork buffet which was plentiful and delicious, with gf diets admirably catered for. Desserts to die for and plenty of them. Every time we looked up there was more wine being poured. Coordination by aileen with our suppliers could not be faulted, everything ran like clockwork. Staff were discreet but there if you needed them. The gardens are beautiful and made a lovely backdrop for our photos. Thanks also to Charlotte and Emily who swiftly answered my emails. All in all we truly had a wedding to remember and will be going back for a weekend break, a truly lovely place with staff that go the extra mile.
Hotel was undergoing some building works, it was raining and a Monday - what could go wrong ? Simplistically , nothing ! Excellent attentive staff , and a very pleasant chef, led our business meeting to be enjoyable and successful. The House Salads were very good , with fresh ingredients , and excellent presentation. Thanks !
We stayed at this hotel after attending a friends wedding and found the accomodation was good value for money. However, we were a bit disappointed with the breakfast, as there was not much option and what was there seemed very dry
As we had a discount voucher, three of us went for afternoon tea at this hotel. It was delicious and plentiful. The decor of the restaurant is very nice and staff were friendly and helpful. We would happily return and pay the full price.
Having running water, being charged for my 'complimentary' breakfast, having £40 withheld without explanation (I'm still waiting for that to be returned to me), and being charged £25 for the early check-in to my non-functioning room marred my experience of what was an otherwise nice room. I feel, given the problems here, that I should not have been charged the full price of the room and certainly not be an extra £65 pounds out of pocket. After multiple inquiries I have not been offered any recompense for this miserable experience, save for the words 'we will look into it'. The staff were friendly enough on the day but the handling of my concerns has been met with inaction. Unfortunately I would not now avoid staying at any Best Western hotels in future.
We had our sons christening at the best western at the end of May. The team were fantastic in the run up to the event as well as on the day. Libby and the events team were brilliant. I would definitely recommend. The room was set up beautifully and the food was delicious. The grounds are also great for kids. What a dream day. Thank you so much.
BRING A FAN this hotel even when outside is cool is far too hot. There are building works going on that no one will tell you about but starts at 8 am with drilling and the rooms are bellow par on cleanliness.
Always enjoy our breaks at the Ivy Hill. The staff, food, rooms value for money and service are all excellent. It's our go to place for a casual treat. Restaurant is especially good. We will be visiting again soon
My husband and l and my sister have just returned home after a delicious lunch in Bartellas restaurant at the Ivy Hill Hotel Margaretting. On arrival at the reception lovely greeting from Emily, hotel looked very welcoming. We had booked lunch for 1pm and were shown to our table, and so well looked after by the Manager and his team, so sorry l didnt ask their names. Food was delicious and very well presented. All staff we spoke to very helpful. We look forward to our next visit.
Yesterday we had a celebration tea at the Ivy Hill Hotel. We've used this hotel before for our 2 sons' wedding receptions, and now my birthday. As always, the service from all members of staff was impeccable. My daughter in law has severe food allergies, and the chef was superb in supplying her with separate food that was delicious . No request was considered too much trouble! The room was beautifully set out too, and the whole Events team were on hand to see that everything went smoothly. All the food was delicious and plentiful. I can't recommend this hotel highly enough!
I dined at Bartellas here yesterday. The food was beautiful, lovely clean restaurant and toilets, and the service provided by Lorna was excellent. The lady at the front desk, who's name I didn't get, was also extremely helpful
Our club celebrated our 44th Charter Night here in the Margaretting Suite. After a welcome drink, we enjoyed an excellent 3 course meal. Libby and her staff attended to us perfectly. All that we had hoped for and planned was brilliantly carried out We had a lovely, memorable evening - thank you, Ivy Hill Hotel
Staff were helpful in enabling us to access our room earlier than planned due to visiting to attend a wedding. Room was clean and tidy (warm, but there was a fan which we used) and breakfast was lovely.
We stayed at The Ivy Hill for a wedding round the corner, and we enjoyed ourselves. We checked in and the girl on the desk was lovely. However, upon entering our room we were disappointed to find that it hadn't been cleaned. There was still a deposit in the toilet and the bed hadn't been made, let alone changed and there was litter all over the room. We went back to see the lady on the desk and she seemed genuinely embarrassed. She then went to check the next room for us to check it was clean, before sending us off again. The second room was clean and tidy and breakfast was great. For £100 odd a night, it was a lovely stay and I would stay again. Thank you.
I hosted my Husbands 50th Birthday celebration at the hotel and it was fantastic Libby and her team were brilliant they were helpful and friendly and nothing was ever a problem with all of our requirements everything was taken out of our hands and we didn't have to worry about a thing i could not have asked for a better venue and team of people on the day i can only say a BIG THANK YOU AGAIN LiBBY and TEAM you were the best.
We attended a 60th birthday party here, and it was excellent. The party food was superb and the breakfast was superb. Staff were all friendly and helpful and the room was first class. In all, impossible to find fault.
Celebrated big birthday and anniversary with friends, lovely evening 'doo', excellent restaurant food and very nice atmosphere. Hotel able to make the event personal to me and my wishes, nothing was too much trouble.
We held our Wedding Ceremony and Reception here on Sunday 5th May 2019. We chose the Ivy Hill Hotel as the venue catered for our small Wedding. Each guest was able to choose their meal choices from the Private Dining Menu, which was nice as it meant that they did not all have to have the same. The food was very enjoyable and the service very attentive. The initial enquiry phone call (to the venue) was very informative, and all the way through the planning to the end of the Wedding Day ran very smoothly. The team looking after us on the day were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. The gardens are excellent for photos and to walk about. It was a lovely day and passed far too quickly. We would recommend this Venue. Mavis & Derek.
Booked last minute the night before travel . For the price I was a bit disappointed. The hotel is a little tired in places and my room had lots of thick dust on the windowsill and lamps. The fan and floorboards were noisy. The room was unbearably hot and I had to leave the windows open all night but as I overlooked the kitchen that was noisy. The bed was super comfy though and I did have a nice bath. I ordered room service of cheese and biscuits which was expensive for what it was . The breakfast was ok - cooked fresh and quickly. Not much continental choice. Staff were all friendly.
Essex is such a pretty place, spent a very long and very well deserved at this hotel and have no complaints, cannot fault it! The hotel is quite pretty, covered in Ivy, the grounds are simply lovely. The rooms are very large, although could do with a bit of updating. Also enjoyed an afternoon tea on Sunday, was fantastic. Relaxed and lovely hotel, sweet staff.
Nice enough hotel but it is a bit dated if you're under 40. The room had a very strong air freshner which I had to turn off when I first came in. The shower is a genuine dribble (at least in my room!). The restaurant is fairly decent, would eat there again. When I came back to the room after, it smelt like damp or similar - air freshner is back on! Wouldn't stay in the hotel again. Overpriced!
I spent a week at the hotel on business. The location of the hotel is okay, being a ten to fifteen minute drive from Chelmsford. There is a large car park which is a bonus. My room was spacious enough, with a good bed and selection of pillows, and was clean. The decor is a bit dated for me, and the room looked as though it needed freshening up - some of the paintwork was marked and the room needs repainting throughout. While clean, the bathroom was also in need of some attention. As other contributors have noted, the room temperature can get on the hot side and I was unable to regulate it a great deal. There is tea/coffee facilities in the room, but these were not always replenished daily. Breakfast is s combination of self-service and waiter, with hot food having to be ordered which ensures it is freshly cooked. I used the restaurant one evening and found the food to be satisfactory: my meal had a cous cous side which was still frozen in the middle. Staff were made aware but didn't seem unduly concerned. I felt the main course I had, kofta with cous cous and salad, was a little overpriced for was it was. Hotels are very much personal taste. There are no gym facilities on site, but are available at a hotel connected to Ivy Hill which is a 10 minute drive away ( not used by me, but used by others I was with). There is great potential for the hotel but it does need the decor updating.
Overall the location is handy near the main road, there is plenty of parking and the room was clean and sizeable but expensive. Decor a bit dated, had an evening meal. Food wasn't that good and drinks were very pricey indeed. There was also a 10% service tab added on to my bill when I came to book out. Overall average
Another year has come and gone so I booked to stay here again to see our anniversary in Well the staff haven't changed me and wife remember the staff and they remembered us. The staff at the check in desk and at the bar couldn't do enough for ya they was always asking if we needed anything The restaurant ( bartellers) is lovely the food was really nice and the staff are very friendly It's a shame Libby wasn't in because it would of been nice to have a catch up but hopefully we will see her next time What an amazing weekend me and wife loves this hotel and we will see you all next year Thank you again Steven & Nina Jones
The hotel offers a full set of features, from a well stocked bar, wonderful food and lovely suites, the room we stayed in was a well maintained room with a 4 poster Bed and bathroom. the room was very clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful.
We recently visited Ivy Hill to have afternoon tea and it was absolutely delightful! The food itself was delicious and presented beautifully. The children adored their afternoon tea and the service was outstanding, nothing was too much trouble. We shall be back for your Easter afternoon tea!
We have choosen this establishment for several years for our conference and dinner and the arrangements from the management have always been to a high order. Small touches like iced water and mints in the conference room are very welcome and the room is nicely set out. Our evening dinner, with several options, was served in good order and the food was of excellent quality. Thank you to the manager ( Libby) for all the arrangements.
From the moment you step through the door of the ivy hill hotel there is a warm and friendly atmosphere From the ease of checkin to the service received in the restaurant ! The food was lovely and would heartedly recommend the afternoon tea Rooms were clean and there was plenty of space Would definitely stay again
This hotel is well situated withr good travel links. This was a for night stay to visit family. Comfortable room, very good breakfasts and evening meals. Service very good especially heplful on reception. Large carpark
Stayed here with business and had a good nights sleep. Nice quiet room with good wifi to catch up on work, friendly staff all round and plenty of choice at breakfast. The food both at dinner and breakfast was very tasty, so good to know as will be returning with family.
My boyfriend and I stayed at the hotel in February and was very impressed!. Food was lovely, service was amazing and the rooms are clean and modern. We felt very welcome from check in through to check out and we would certainly return!
In a secluded location with Good safe parking,Nice spacious room, Friendly courteous staff, Good Wifi speed and a bath that fills in under 10 mins ! Decent menu selection and the option of sandwich`s in the bar. Reasonably priced lager. Only gripe would be the basic freeview channels in the room.
Great stay. Staff very helpful in advice in visiting London. Lovely room and bathroom. Dinner and service was very nice and we loved the "English" breakfast, which was very big choice of hot and cold things served by a friendly lady. We will be back on our next trip to England.
Amazing dinner for vegans and vegetarians but nothing at all for breakfast despite requesting up to a week ahead and being promised. Fourth and last time here... no more chances. Super dinner though and service other than breakfast great.
We stayed overnight after an evening event at the Ivy. The food was excellent on the evening and so too was the breakfast the following morning, only thing was that it took a while to arrive, but was delicious and freshly cooked. Room was clean, comfy bed. Plenty of parking, easy to find with lovely grounds to play/walk. Hotel was spacious with plenty of areas to sit and relax/have a drink etc and the staff were helpful and friendly . Would recommend a stay at the Ivy.
Easy to find hotel in nice grounds, ample parking and comfortable rooms. Cannot fault the service or facilities. The only draw back are the bar prices. I have never understood why hotel bars have to overcharge ?
First of all the toilet didn't work, then when we tried to call to complain of the noise the phone also conveniently didn't work. There was an event happening the night we were there that we werenot warned about. The music was loud and didn't finish until a few minutes after midnight. The breakfast staff were poorly trained and advised us that stuff with gluten in was gluten free. The manager tried to make it up to us and to explain what was and wasn't gluten free for the breakfast menu, took ourorder but clearly didn't pay that much attention as my child got fried eggs instead of scrambled. In the end we had 50% off our total bill which was a plus but by any means I would have rather a good night sleep and seen staff that were happy doing what they were doing. Would I recommend this place to a friend?... probably if I secretly hated them. Personally I wouldnt ever stay here again even if it was given to me for free
Arrived early evening and received warm welcome from Emily at the front desk. Unfortunately the room I had been given had a broken light so I returned to the front desk to mention this. The room was also situation in a corridor with a swing door on either side of it so I feared it would be noisy during the evening/night. I had asked if the room was quiet when I checked in so I mentioned both issues to Emily. After a short delay, she was able to upgrade me to a more comfortable and quiet room. Bed was comfortable, everything was clean and the room was warm. As I had an early check-out for work, I arrived for breakfast as it opened at 8 am on Saturday so it was rather rushed but staff were friendly and my poached eggs were cooked well. I had been offered a Continental breakfast by Emily but really need to eat well before a long day at work. On a general note, please could hotels rethink the design idea of cushions on beds; they seem unhygienic to me. Will definitely stay here again when in the area.
not all staff helpful, plumbing is sub standard and the whole place could do with a makeover. First room allocated had not even been serviced that day, way too long to receive breakfast. wont be staying there again
Room was suitable for event and staff including reception, restaurant, booking were extremely accommodating of all requirements. Venue was excellent, parking facilities and location. Perfect venue for business requirements.
Well what a jewel! Just off of the A12 traveling East with plenty of parking which is such a necessity these days. You walk in to a most welcoming reception that is exactly where you expect to find it, greeted by an exceptionally polite and smiling face giving you such a special welcome to your hotel. As you are booking in to your left you will see "Bartellas Restaurant Bar" which is an appetiser to eat there later on. Our room was on the 1st floor that required us to go along a short corridor leading from the reception, on our way passing the lounge area with a bar where afternoon teas are served and boy oh boy did they look enticing! From there you would the next day go into where breakfasts would be served. Being Best of Best Western you might be surprised by me, but trust me you are in for a wonderful stay especially if you eat in "Bartellas" their restaurant. Have a pre-dinner drink and your glasses are then collected as you are ushered into the dining room, all drinks were also placed in front of the respective person correctly (5 star), and you will not be disappointed. There is a good selection to suit all, once ordered sit back relax and you will be presented with the most wonderful meal you would have had in a long while at a hotel. As we sat enjoying this most wonderful meal plates taken back to the kitchen were all empty, a very good sign of how the food was. The whole of the meal was as if we were judges on "MasterChef finals". Thank you all at Ivy Hill Hotel for a very special weekend and as we all said when we left "We'll be back". Oh and a special thank you to the owners for selecting such a customer focused team of Management, Chefs and Staff right down to the Gardener who are all a credit to you.
We visited the area for a family gathering and was recommended this Hotel - we weren't disappointed, as an elderly couple the staff could not do enough to assist us. The Lunch we had in the Bartellas Restaurant was wonderful, a lovely tender piece if beef with all the trimmings and a super dessert. The beds were comfortable, and a huge cooked breakfast has set us up for a long drive home, we will certainly be back.
I stayed here 10 years ago on my wedding night and it was lovely, however returning after attending a friends wedding locally I was surprised how run down the hotel is, after complaining about the cold tap no working in the bathroom sink I just go a sorry and no offer of money off of the breakfast or anything else, the bride and groom also stayed at the hotel and their toilet wouldn't flush and again just a sorry. the tiles in the bathroom were mouldy and most of the furniture was chipped, I think it needs some TLC. the cooked breakfast very over cooked and I couldn't eat it, after getting my order wrong, I told the waitress 3 times I didn't want beans and she still got it wrong, I wouldn't of minded but it wasn't busy only 6 people eating breakfast. I did however have a good nights sleep but paying £112 I didn't think was worth the money.
I use this hotel as a Best Western Member because it is ideally located and very quiet, however last nights stay was my worse so far. No working shower at all in my room so they gave the key to the room next door to use theirs! The shower worked but only cold water, so trudged back to my room in just my towel! This morning at 06:20 i attempted to leave the hotel having paid my bill the night before. Reception was unmanned and the front door was locked. I shouted out a coupe of times but settled on telephoning the hotel itself. A gentleman answered and said he'd be right there to unlock the door. 'What happens in the event of a fire?' I said, 'Oh, i should have left a phone on reception to call me'. HSE might want to visit and check that procedure...
Very good meeting place just few minutes away from the A12. Quiet pleasant place. Food nicely served and very good. Service good. Parking free and big overflow car park . Food good quality and quantity. Nicely presented.
Dropped into the Best Western Ivy Hill Hotel without booking and was pleasantly accommodated. The receptionist could not be more helpful. Comfortable and clean rooms. Visited the Bartellas restaurant for an evening meal. Very good. (See separate review). I found the hotel to be of a high standard and I have recommended that my work team use this facility. Good rate including breakfast Thank You Best Western. Your Team are a credit to your business. Doug
Our family booked in for the weekend of the Sweet Charity Ball again this year to ensure no one had to drive home! Rooms are comfortable, though it was raining heavily the night we stayed and leaky guttering meant that we could hear the rainfall throughout the night. Staff at the hotel are lovely and the service is always excellent, with nice little touches like bringing water to your room. Breakfast is self service with a good selection of breads, hot and cold food. The only issue we had was with the waiter confusing our breakfast drink order. Look forward to returning in 2019 - hope it's not raining!
visited as part of a single night away to see friends. Room okay , warm and clean but a little on the small side and not too impressed with bags of laundry left in the fire escape route which was NOT entirely blocked but ...... The windows were a little tired and had some condensation mould on them and could not get the shower to work so had a bath. We had a meal in the hotel which I believe is run as seperate franchise so will review seperately. Car park small and hotel not exactly near anywhere but overall okay and close ish to the A12
Very well planned New Years Eve Event. Reception drink on arrival. Fish starter and Haddock with Mussels was nicely presented and tasted delicious. Those that had Fillet of Beef said it was overcooked. Trio of desserts and a good platter of Cheese and Biscuits. 1/2 a bottle of wine per person and a glass of Champagne was included in cost. Service was excellent. We stayed overnight . Rooms were good but bathrooms and showers and taps need upgrading. Very difficult to turn taps. Everywhere was spotlessly clean. A fridge and water in room would have been nice. Evening was good value for money and enjoyed by all.
Recently entertained 35 guests for my birthday celebration. The location was superb and the venue/facilities likewise. The service, meal and attention to detail offered by management and staff could not be faulted. We will definitely use again for group functions.
Lovely venue Strange ABBA group 2 ladies no men but great entertainment. Food excellent hot and very tasty. Excellent service by staff. Disco played great music. Great night - good night had by all Would recommend.
I organized a Christmas Dinner for 20 at the Ivy Hill. It proved to be a perfect venue for us. The dining room was beautifully laid out for Christmas. The bar area and dining room were smart, warm and comfortable. The food did not quite meet that standard but was acceptable. The meals were served efficiently but the staff weren't easy to get hold as they were covering other parties. Overall though, everyone enjoyed the event and we had a great time.
Hotels are hard to find in this area so you will expect to spend a little more ... £100 1 nights B.B. single occupancy Hotel is dated but clean and goodish standard Restaurant also expensive but reviews are excellent - I opted for room service was average at best Lager warning - £5.95 a pint.... Reception and bar staff were excellent.
Stayed just for one night. The room was clean and comfortable. The meal was extremely good, the service was fast and efficient We had the duck confit and wild boar cassoulet and the calves liver as our mains and they could not be faulted. The wine was great as were both sweets. We will certainly be using this hotel again.
I stayed overnight with colleagues. We had an excellent meal in the evening in the pleasant restaurant. The rooms were well-appointed, although perhaps more water pressure would help the showers. There are very comfortable lounge areas for discussions or for having tea in the morning or afternoon. Staff were extremely helpful and courteous.
Stayed one night here , lovely room with four poster bed , nice and cosy, warm and comfortable. The staff were very good, polite and efficient. Lovely breakfast. Beautiful gardens decorated for Christmas.Very pleasant stay .
Really enjoyed my brief stay as part of a business trip to Chelmsford. My room was comfortable clean and well appointed. Dinner was excellent and I want to commend Lorna for her friendly and attentive service
The hotel and it's amenities are fine, however the room I stayed in was not clean & this is all I would really like from a hotel to be honest. There was mould on the blinds, hairs & a large bug in the bathroom as you can see in the attached picture. This was raised with the staff on check out and because this was not brought up to them as and when it happened (I wanted to go to sleep as had to be up early in the morning) they were not able to offer any discount or good will gesture which I think is absolutely terrible. Would not stay again.
We are currently on our way home from the Ivy Hill Hotel having stayed for a wedding last night. We were made to feel very welcome by every member of staff, the room was lovely and clean, breakfast was great, and overall it's good value for money. Special mention to the Hotel Manager, Libby, who took time out of her busy day to drive us to the church for the ceremony when our taxi failed to show! That was a really lovely touch. Thanks again - hope to return again soon! Xxx
Right from the start of booking our Golden Wedding anniversary dinner for 80 guests all aspects were handled in a most professional manner with attention to detail. The presentation and serving of the food and wine at dinner was excellent with many people remarking on how good the food was. Everything ran smoothly and efficiently on the day. All staff were excellent. Thank you all very much for making it such a memorable occasion.
Recently stayed the night at this hotel. Good location close to Chelmsford with lovely room. Service was excellent and staff very friendly. Comfortable restaurant and bar area. WiFi available and free
Room was a good size and bed was comfortable. Hotel is very near main road, but rear facing room was quiet. Bathroom had been updated but was not as clean and modern as advertised on website. Breakfast had good selection of food and was well presented. Staff were all very nice.
Held my mum and dad's 60th wedding anniversary lunch here. They thoroughly enjoyed themselves and so did everyone else. The team looking after us were both very friendly and helpful yet not overbearing, the food was good and everything went to plan. Charlotte was also very helpful with the planning of the event. Good value for money.
We only had a one night stay for a wedding in the locality, and whilst the beds were clean and comfy as was the floor, the level of dust on the headboard and television was incredible and there were cobwebs in the window, hence the reduced rating. The Buffet breakfast was also very good, and a good cup of coffee (or 3)
From the moment we met the staff ,Charlotte the leader was brill, a really good menu , reasonable wine prices , great staff, brilliant service ( Mike and his lead lady who's name I missed !) and the food was excellent. All 25 of our guests were really im0ressed ,thanks you made our GW lunch a real pleasure . Highly recommended
Hotel is very popular as we had to pay upfront in the Spring for a late summer stay. We paid more for a deluxe room but sadly it was the nearest to the A12. Cheaper rooms are round the back but frankly a better location. There is no air conditioning so on hot nights windows would stay open and one hears traffic noise from busy A12. Fan is provided but not the same. Suggest you ask where the room is before staying. Staff were fine and breakfast is good. We were at a special party event and cannot fault the food, staff service or venue. It's a Best Western, perfectly fine but not wow. Pricing at weekends reflects its popularity.
Stayed here for two nights, myself and husband and three children. Interconnecting rooms. Couldn't fault the hotel from the moment we checked in until we left. All the staff were attentive and friendly, the rooms really clean, guaranteed interconnecting rooms, lovely breakfast. It was well worth the money. No air con but we could open the windows wide and the rooms had fans. We were there on the hottest day of the year and It was bearable! Only one downside, the toilets on the rooms seem to take ages to fill and would often not flush. Not sure why? Water pressure maybe? But would be worth the management looking into. Overall I would return to this hotel without hesitation
I telephoned to check on what disability facilities were available. A check by the staff of a 'disability assisted room' for especially the bathroom entailed telephone charge of nearly £10 for a 17 minute call. I must admit i was advised a premium rate of 7p per minute would apply but the charge is 8 times more! After a little conflab this was refunded but it took an argument about they being affiliated to Best Western and an independent hotel and eventually a begrudging agreement by the senior receptionist. When leaving there was no indication of the credit and the final invoice had to be amended. Have given 2 stars instead of 1 because the receptionist and restaurant staff were both helpful and attentive. As regards the 'assisted disability room' this should be ' limited disability room' being poorly laid out and lack of equipment. Clearly the management do not consider disabled people as a customer but more of a chore.
A group of us stayed at Ivy Hill Hotel last weekend for a wedding close by on Saturday. The staff are genuinely very caring and most professional. One couple managed to lose their way and on telephoning for directions were asked to wait where they were and a member of staff drove out to meet them so they could follow him back to the hotel in time for us all to have dinner together on Friday evening. The hotel is set in lovely gardens and our rooms and bathrooms were very comfortable. The food was also very good both in the lounge, where we had a light lunch on arrival, and in the dining room, where we had dinner on Friday evening and breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. I can highly recommend this hotel .
I stayed for my cousins wedding, i applaude the staff for having to deal with some many people for the weekend. The bed is big and so comfortable. Clean however it was boiling in the rooms, I had to open the windows for some air. The bathroom is clean too but the water pressure isnt he best. As i dont eat pork the breakfast was a little limited to me but nothing for me to complain about as others seem to eat it fine. It is a short walk to the venue which is a great help and is lovely. Big enough car park too which is a bonus. Friendly staff and lovely surroundings.
Lovely hotel, lovely staff, fantastic service. Special thanks to Jacqui, Lorna, and Robert for a wonderful stay and conference... would highly recommend this hotel for a personal or a business stay. Ample parking
We stayed one night for a wedding taking place on the Saturday evening. The rooms were plesant, although personally I found the bed far too soft, almost to the point I rolled out. The room arguably needed a deeper clean, but with a TV large wardrobe space and coffee/tea making facilities it more than made up for the short comings. The grounds are lovely. The staff are friendly and you will not be disappointed with the breakfast. There is a large car park. Whilst the noise from the road is noticeable it did not stop us sleeping. We would certainly stay again if we visited this area.
We all were invited to the wake at this hotel after a funeral in nearby Fryerning. We had welcome drinks .Then could help ourselves to a buffet of sandwiches and various dips. The room was spacious with plenty of tables and chairs....Later cakes were brought out and we were able to have cups of tea and coffee. I would certainly recommend this hotel for a similar event.
On arrive great looking building old Victorian style with green foliage all over . The car park is so big about 2 acres land & marquee for weddings & party's till The morning . Front of house staff member's were very welcome with so much people staying for the wedding . The rooms are lovely ? but remember with luggage and two flights of stairs and no lift set your (Fitbit watch) . Inside beautiful four poster bed 32in tv could be bigger ? But the bathroom ?? look like 60 min make over job . The morning breakfast (yum Yum) plenty to eat . I did not have dinner in the Hotel ? but my wife and daughter say it was lovely . Now the big question : would I come back ? Yes .
Stayed here for one night only, great hotel, quite modern, warm welcome on arrival. Our room was beautiful, had everything we could possibly of needed. We did not eat in the restaurant. We sat outside for a few drinks and the surroundings are beautiful, so pretty albeit a bit noisy from the traffic on the nearby A12 but that did not put us off. Great hotel, would definitely return.
I use the hotel often for meetings and impromptu working and the service is always very good especially in the lounge bar and in particular from one member of staff - Trevor. Always attentive, friendly and nothing is too much trouble for him.
Would definitely stay again, good menu choice and the quality of the food is also good. Lovely outside eating/drinking area Pleasant staff in the restaurant and in the hotel. Rooms are clean and comfortable Plenty of free parking
One of the best hotels I have stayed at for a wedding reception. Staff were very helpful and always available to assist, the food was very good, well presented and plentifull. Grounds to wander in if you wanted a quiet time.
We held our Wedding reception here at the Margaretting Suite in May. We cannot rate this venue highly enough. Nothing was too much trouble. The food was amazing. The staff were amazing. Aileen and Libby made the day totally stress free. We feel like they became friends! We have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending them for your big day. Superb!
Had a great experience due to the amazing service from Trevor at the breakfast, he was very friendly and had a great personality! A great laugh would definitely visit again due to his service. It was my first time here and would definitely recommended it's a quiet and hospitable hotel.
The service is second to none. Trevor, the manager at the restaurant really made us feel comfortable and at ease for the wedding. He took his time to locate what we needed whilst serving other on time. We need more people like this working at good hotels. Definitely an asset of the hotel.
I have stayed here on numerous occasions (I actually live less than a mile from here but when the teenage kids and their friends descend upon us there are times when myself and the good lady wife want to disappear and enjoy an evening of peace and quiet. I have had some great nights sleep and some not so great but last night was terrible. This is a nice little hotel for a 3 star and most of the rooms are good. Room 17 (the one assigned to me last night) actually looks in need of a little TLC. There is paint starting to flake away from the ceiling where i assume upstairs has leaked at some point. The bath one too many big scuffs, there are a few scuffs on the wallpaper, happy enough to accept this given the comfort of the bed (such a comfy bed) and that it's good value. This room (along with 18 & 19) are very near the road which also means some road noise from passing traffic (albeit this is a country lane) However, at 11.34pm I assume the buildings heating system kicked in and the crashing, banging that started to come from the bathroom had me sat bolt upright. Even with the door shut the noise was too loud to sleep. We put up with this for over an hour and a half before speaking to the chap on reception and asking to be moved. Guy on reception very helpful, very apologetic and got me moved quickly but i wonder if this is simply an old heating system rather than a one off? Not quite the peace and quiet we had hoped for. I will return but only if there is a room available in another part of the hotel, ill not chance being anywhere near those pipes.
I run a business with a head office in Bath and one of our satellite offices is in Chelmsford which I visit regularly. I have stayed at Ivyhill for the 5th time now and I choose to come here for a number of reasons. Great Parking and just off the A12 Comfortable rooms Excellent Food for both dinner and breakfast. Piping hot .well cooked and delicious. For me it's the best place in the area Sure it's not the last word in modernity but a comfortable place with great staff. Highly recommended.
This time last year we was getting married here so on our year anniversary I thought it would be nice to stay there. Well what can I say about the ivy hill hotel what an amazing place it is and the staff haven't changed a bit they we're helpful and couldn't do anymore for ya the funny thing was they remembered us for the moment we checked lol and it was really nice to see Libby we had a little chat with her which was nice. It is always good to see people that made mine and my wife's special day thank you again for everything you've done for us and we have had a chat and said we will come back here every year to see in our anniversary so see ya next year Love Steven & Nina Jones
We recently celebrated our Diamond Wedding with a family get together (19 of us )at Ivy Hill Hotel. From our first meeting with management to the weekend of the event itself, we felt confident that everything would go well. Friendly and efficient staff, a great menu, both for the evening meal and breakfast on the following morning all combined to provide us with a memorable occasion.
Wasn't the generic tower block I'd expected. Staff were all lovely as was the food (breakfast and bar snacks, didn't have dinner). Room was clean and comfortable, though maybe we weren't in the best room as could hear the people above walking around (my friend didn't so maybe just me ?????). Would recommend to anybody looking to stay around this area
Had a good evening at this hotel close to Chelmsford on business. Parking was ample and reception very friendly. Room was smart and tidy. Bathroom very good. Quality wine and drinks in the bar and the meal was really excellent and good value. The owner was on hand and attentive. Breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs was spot on! I would go back again without a second thought. A really nice place.
Tucked away in Margaretting we booked a family room for the night. The room was pretty spacious with a large fold out settee bed already made up for our little one to sleep in. Nice size bathroom and the room had the air of an at home feel as opposed to many hotel rooms from chains. Special mention for the young lady who greeted us and checked us in, had occasion to request her services several times regarding various things about the hotel and the local area and she was knowledgeable and helped me very quickly each time. Excellent service. They have a bar area within the hotel and an Italian restaurant with it's own bar area which is not part of the hotel chain. We had a very good nights sleep without any interruption (was worried that attendees from a party in the hotel function room might make a noise out front upon their departure as our bedroom window was right over the entrance to the hotel). There are no shops, restaurants, pubs etc... within a few mins walking distance of the hotel so you would need transport to go anywhere. Thought the price for the room for one night was expensive but the service from the staff at the hotel certainly put a large dent in that thinking.
We recently stayed and had a very pleasant visit. The hotel staff and service could not be faulted and were very helpful. The breakfast was very good. The only slight downside was the room, although fine for the one night, being constructive, we felt needed a little updating, it felt a little tired for the price. Overall though, if we were in the area again we would stay again.
over night last minute break for the hubby and me, visiting family nearby. nice hotel, clean, staff were very friendly and happy to help, bar was well stocked. Breakfast was good, our family joined us for breakfast at £15.00 per head, i felt was a little expensive but not enough to put me off returning again
A trip with a party of 12 people was so enjoyable. The food in the restaurant was first class, the service impeccable and the value for money was good. We look forward to returning for our next big family occasion.
Staying at this lovely hotel and enjoyong its ambience. Had another lovely meal in the restaurant Bartellas tonight but as i reviewed yesterday i am unable to review again which brings me to the main point. The staff in the hotel and restaurant are extremely friendly, helpfull and professional. Tonight we were attended by Lorna who looked after our dining experience and when i mentioned that wewould have to leave for work before breakfast she went away and organised a takeaway breakfast for us to collect before we left. Credit where its due this was service beyond the norm, Thank You so much LORNA you are a star.
We stayed here to attend a nearby wedding at 2pm. Not wanting to be checking in at 10.30 at night and needing a coffee and lunch before the wedding we arrived just after 12 to enquire if it was possible to check in early and leave our cases in the room as official check in time was 3pm. Told this only possible if we paid for an early check in which we reluctantly agreed to but do think the £25 charge over the top given price for room, that. the room was ready and that if you work the average hourly cost of the room it comes out around £6.per hour. However it's a nice hotel. The sandwich and coffees were well served as were the late night drinks and breakfast.
Not a fan of the BW Hotels but this really is an exception, the hotel has clearly had a lot of money spent on it, all the way through so every inch of the hotel looks new, fresh and modern. The rooms are easily 3+ star. Staff from check in, bar, and dinner were fantastic and the drinks and food were first class. If your in the area for a night or 2 you would be mad to miss out on this hidden gem.
A well run hotel with well trained, helpful staff. Jackie manages a very good restaurant and the food was very tasty and well presented. Steph efficiently looked after all our needs with a smile and nothing was too much trouble. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order. There were many choices including porridge, English cooked breakfast, salmon, ham, cheeses, fresh fruit salad, yoghurt, cereals, nuts, pastries and breads. Run by Mr. Bartella, a friendly gentleman, who is dedicated to providing the best possible service for his customers. Lovely big, thick, white towels added to our comfort. Room and communal areas all clean. Would not hesitate to stay there again when in this area.
Working away is not always enjoyable but when the staff at your hotel take time out to make your stay a better one it most definitely helps Arriving on a Sunday night I was greeted with an upgrade Our function room was set up fantastically Reception staff were exceptional and Jacqui and Steph in the restaurant were both exceptional hosts serving delicious food Thank you to everyone
We have just celebrated our Golden Wedding Anniversary at The Ivy Hill. The planning and organisation of our weekend was second to none. The upgrade to our room was a welcome surprise for us. The table layout and presentation, the food and service received many compliments from our guests who spent the weekend with us. I would like to thank the staff for their attention to detail and a special mention to Libby & Mary who were both involved with making the occasion so special. Thank you for a memorable weekend From Mr & Mrs Doyle, family and friends.
This is a good three star hotel. The staff is great and went out of their way to make our stay as comfortable as possible. It is a nice for a three star hotel and the more expensive rooms are spacious and relatively modern, although the bathrooms could do with an upgrade. The walls are also very thin so you can easily hear what is going on next door (and the motorway) so bring earplugs! We stayed here as we were attending a family event nearby and for that purpose the hotel was absolutely fine.
Rooms spacious and well maintained. Bartella restaurant servespecially lovely food and staff can't do enough. Great cooked breakfast. Plenty of parking. I can't say enough about this hotel. A good find.
What an excellent hotel. What excellent staff. THANK YOU, for a wonderful experience. Two colleagues and I had the pleasure of staying here the night. It was great. I would not hesitate to come here again, whether it's for family, business or special occasions. All the staff were exceptionally friendly, welcoming & helpful. We decided to eat out, fish n chips was high on our agenda, so we didn't sample the evening menu. We did sit in the bar later, to unwind after finishing paperwork. Everywhere is maintained to a high standard, and is very clean. Breakfast was superb. I had pastries, fresh fruit salad & Parma ham, a selection of cheeses with grapes, finished off with salmon & scrambled eggs. Everything I had, and everything my colleagues had was excellent. Service was faultless. One of the best hotels I've been in & certainly one of the top Best Westerns ~ along with the one in Eastbourne. Highly recommended
We were involved in a car accident and was dropped off at this hotel, we were welcomed with open arms and was given drinks on the house after our ordeal, this meant the world to us and would love to go back under better circumstances
We stayed here overnight as we were goi g to a Charuty Ball at the hotel. We stayed last year and looked forward to revisiting it this year. Comfortable, well appointed, clean rooms. Friendly staff. Excellent breakfast. Look forward to our next visit.
I attended a 50th Birthday meal last week. There were about 25 people, 3 course meal, each of the courses were amazing. The food was excellent, piping hot and the timing of the courses was perfect. I loved it so much, I am going back tonight. Highly recommended.
Stayed here for 2 nights on business. Great welcome, really nice and comfortable room. Had a sandwich for dinner both nights as I just didn't fancy the dinner. Just a bit to rich when all I fancied was sine comfort food. But that's not a complaint just my opinion.
We arranged for 24 of us for afternoon tea to celebrate my Mums 90th Birthday on 19th November 2017 and we had a great time. From the word go the staff were very helpful and accommodating. The room was layed out very nicely, the tea was lovely . We had 6 young children with us and they were welcomed and allowed to use the bar area to move about. The waitresses were polite and helpfull. A special thanks to Libby the manager who was on hand all afternoon to make sure we were Ok, she was brilliant , fussed my Mum and generally looked after us, which made the get together of our family a great success. Thank you
I have stayed in this hotel for one night recently, room was clean, well equipped and giving a generally good feel. Hotel restaurant is very decent, and breakfast was great. bottom line, all good, and I intend to stay there again.
Stayed here very recently for two nights whilst being away on business. Hotel clean & staff friendly & the room was spotless too. Only a minor detail to mention and that's how hot the hotel feels whilst either in the bedroom “heating turned off” or in the various lounges, maybe a bit of air con wouldn't go a miss.
Genuinely friendly and helpful service, clean, crisp attractive rooms, skilfully prepared chef-cooked food (including homemade bread). Attention to detail everywhere, including the offer of bringing fresh milk and water to your room if required. I would definitely seek this hotel out if in the area again.
I recently stayed several nights on business. The layout, like many converted older estate homes, has rooms of various sizes and configurations with creaking floors and faulty window clasps that desperately need refinishing. The closet had no foot but had six foot long tassels like they used in the 70s which was rather a nuisance since you couldn't get anything in or out of that closet without feeling like a fly caught in a spider web. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, particularly when my room's radiator didn't work and needed service. Overall it was adequate but it's location outside of Chelmsford is not ideal.
We chose this hotel due to its proximity to Hylands Park, where we were taking part in the Memory Walk for the Alzheimer's Society. It's a nice-looking hotel and the staff were all excellent. Our room (room 10, ground floor) was very tired and there were several dust-covered cobwebs which didn't fill me with confidence that the rest of the room's cleanliness was up to standard, but that having been said, we didn't see anything else to alarm us. I know that someone always has to have the room next to the kitchen or within earshot of the extractor fans, but this room didn't even have double glazing. The only way I got to sleep was to put the electric fan on (extra brownie point for providing one) as white noise. Everything else about the room was fine - wifi okay, tv good, tea and coffee-making facilities good. But the best reason to come here is the restaurant. Honestly, this was the most amazing food my husband and I had ever tasted! Innovative dishes, perfectly-sized portions, beautifully presented, delicious wine - and the staff were exemplary. I can't recommend it highly enough. Now if they could just remove from their menu the word "parmesan" from their vegetarian dishes I will be totally happy. The manager reassured me that it wasn't real Parmesan, which is not vegetarian, but Parmesan has protected origin status and the word really shouldn't be used unless it's the genuine article. So overall, the room was okay, the staff great and Bartellas Restaurant was out of this world!
From first contact regarding plans for our wedding, the staff at the Ivy Hill Hotel were fabulous. Always very helpful and very friendly. The pre wedding plans were perfect and were put together with no stress or hassle. The wedding day itself was fantastic and again the staff made everyone very welcome and provided a 1st class service throughout.
The Afternoon Tea was a present for my Sisters 50th Birthday. This was very good value for money, lovely surroundings and overall a very pleasant afternoon. Oh yes and the Tea & cake was yummy! I would suggest that you give it a try.
Attended a friend's wedding and stayed overnight, what a lovely location, the gardens and patio area were great for photos and drinks and we were lucky to have beautiful weather. The staff were very attentive and the food was delicious.
A little late getting around to give this review of a very good event and stay!! In May this year, we held a party for family and a few friends at the Ivy Hill Hotel. We hired a function room for drinks and dinner in the evening and also booked ten rooms with breakfast for guests overnight. A big thank you to Mary who was really very helpful with and throughout all the arrangements and also a big thank you to Libby who was also very helpful, involved with arrangements, was there on the night to ensure everything went to plan and looked after us in an exceptional manner! The food was very good, the staff were all very pleasant and helpful. The accommodation, as one would expect of a quality hotel, was very good. Ivy Hill, we hope to see you at the next Bash - thank you so much!!
My wife and I stayed at the hotel as part of a wedding party, the staff were friendly and helpful, and when we left a couple of items behind in the room they went out there way to ensure that we got them back. All around I found them to be helpful and able to give us a welcome stay.
I have previously reviewed both the hotel and restaurant, this time however the Ivy Hill has excelled itself. During a weekend in July we have made extensive use of the hotel for my daughter's wedding. On the Friday evening I hosted a private dining event for 18 members of my family. I thought the evening was a great success. The food was, as expected, excellent, the level of service was first class but from my point of view as the organiser the assistance from the hotel management to arrange the evening was impressive. The whole party enjoyed the evening - particularly the food. On the Saturday we held the wedding reception in the Margaretting Suite. A wedding breakfast for over 90 people takes a lot of planning. The hotel management were second to none, nothing was too much trouble but of course they are experienced people. From the arrival of the wedding party to the end of the day everything went perfectly to plan. The reception drinks and hors d'oeuvres were just right, the hors d'oeuvres were also really tasty. The hotel has beautiful grounds in which to take photographs. The food for the wedding breakfast was exceptional and the levels of service were impressive. The wedding party included many different dietary requirements such as gluten or dairy free, vegetarians and vegan, all were catered for without issue. The assistance given by the staff when decorating the room was gratefully received and we were all surprised to see the room had been completely cleared and all the decorations etc packed away ready for us the next morning. Many of the guests stayed at the hotel and all reported a comfortable stay. We enjoyed a full and delicious breakfast on Sunday morning even though the breakfast room was very busy. I could go on writing good things about the hotel but the reader will get bored. Suffice it to say that my daughter's wedding day was perfect in no small measure to the Ivy Hill Hotel and the staff. My only regret is that all my children are now married and the chances of going to another wedding reception at the Ivy Hill are limited. I will however be returning for the odd night now and again and will certainly make use of the private dining.
Hotel setting is lovely was at my sister's 80th Birthday party food was excellent only thing I would say the price of drinks is a bit steep you needed deep pockets but on saying that it's a hotel not a pub
Really have to say that this hotel has a lovely ambiance and a rural location the previous owners were great and best western have improved on the establishment. Good staff, good food good rooms all in all good experience. I was an invited guest so an impartial observer rather than paying guest and honestly loved the hotel. B back without doubt.
Had my Mum's 60th Birthday meal at the Ivy hill, in one of their private dinning rooms for 25 guests. The evening ran smoothy and the staff where very efficiant. Guest commented on how nice the Venue was. Would definatly consider the Ivy hill again for any future celebrations.

Have just had fab meal in Bartellas restaurant could not fault food my husband had fish & chips I the sea bass so nice chocolate dessert with coconut ice cream fab . Could not fault the service was so good staff very kind helpful and happy
My partner and I attended a wedding here at the end of June and decided to stay. Overall, it was a good experience. The room was clean, tidy and comfortable, although it had no air con. The breakfast was served on a buffet basis but was of a high standard with the staff being most attentive. For me the only Achilles heel was as this is a hotel catering for weddings and dinner dances etc, you may have a problem if rooming at the back of the hotel as the noise appeared to go on passed midnight. That apart, a pretty decent stay!!
Lovely hotel in peaceful and beautiful setting. Room was superb apart from the fact there was no air con and no fan, so it was very hot. The hotel was very clean and the staff were polite and helpful at all times. The room was very clean, bathroom was a good size and the overall size of the room was good too. We enjoyed our stay there.
Check in was a breeze. Everything was ready and they had my reservation all ready. Clean and well laid out room. Bed a little smaller then I would have like but comfortable. Quiet nights sleep. Everything you ever need.
We recently got married at Ivy Hill and had an Amazing day. The staff were outstanding and nothing was too much for them especially Libby our wedding co-ordinator. They were friendly, helpful and ensured our day went smoothly. The Gardens made a Beautiful background for our photo's. The Bridal suite was spacious and the bed very comfortable. We would recommend this hotel to everyone and for every type of function.
Hotel decor and gardens are nice however the rooms are over priced and it over looked a roof which was full of pipe work, roof vents (what a view). I passed my concerns to reception when I checked out the staff said they would pass my complaint to the Nanager I would not recommend this hotel the rooms are the same standard as a Premier Inn room but more expensive.
Last June we held our engagement dinner at the Ivy Hill which was a huge success, so when it came to choosing a venue for our wedding reception there was no hesitation in returning to them. From our initial enquiry to the actual event everything was perfect. Libby and her team treat you like one of the family, nothing is to much trouble and they go beyond the extra mile, superb customer service and the food is high quality and plentiful, our guests loved the canapés, dinner and deserts. And at the end of the evening collapsing into our beautiful four poster bed room was bliss! I cannot thank the Ivy Hill enough for making our wedding reception a day to remember and we will return again and again Philippa and Robert
Booked a function room at Ivy Hill Hotel as a venue for our Golden Wedding Celebration lunch. Everything was very professionally done.Nothing was too much trouble. Service was excellent, and the food was cooked to perfection and served nice & hot. Lots of our guests commented about how good both the service and the food was. I would recommend this venue.
Came here on a business trip. Friendly staff and clean rooms. Had parking which was a bonus and some lovely grounds surrounding the hotel too. Would certainly return. There's not much nearby so you would have drive in to town.
Booked the Ivy Hill Hotel as a venue for our silver wedding anniversary, where we had a function room reserved and a 3 course meal. Couldn't have been better. I supplied small flower displays for all the tables but the hotel added additional touches (silver silky runner as well as small silver hearts scattered across the tables), it looked lovely, big bayed window opening onto the hotel gardens/pound. The service was fantastic, always someone at hand watching if we needed any refills or anything else. Very professional and attentive staff. The meal was fabulous, had a lot of family members commenting on how lovely it tasted (we all had different menus) Some of our family also stayed overnight at the hotel and complemented on the rooms, spacious, clean and well looked after. Would definitely recommend as a venue.
Stayed for a wedding and it was lovely. Spotlessly clean and modern perfect venue for the wedding. Food was excellent and evening buffet plentiful. Staff were attentive and nothing was too much trouble. Room was big and nicely furnished bathroom was lovely. Couldn't find tea n coffee tray until we were leaving as put in cupboard but will know for next time. Well worth a stay.
I had my wedding at the Ivy Hill Hotel and it was amazing. Me and my now wife loved it Libby was brilliant and she was so helpful and got us both though the day. Everyone who we have spoken to have all said that they loved the day and loved the place thank you so much to everyone who had something to do with our day we will never forget what u did especially Libby thank you so much Xx
Such an amazing evening with 10 friends at Bartellas Restaurant, the service from Jacqui was impeccable food to die for and topped off with Mr Bartella himself such an amazing ambience Get booking people's
Came here with my husband and daughter for afternoon tea. We were the only people in the restaurant. The service was very good and we were offered unlimited pots of tea which was great as not all places offer this. The sandwiches were the open type and were very tasty and presented well. If you don't like the ones offered, they are happy to change the fillings to something else. Cakes were lovely, one was a bit strange and we couldn't place the taste but on the whole, delicious. What you can't eat, you get wrapped up to take home. They offer a children's version which is perfect for the smaller afternoon tea lover. We will return for another!
Stayed here last year and was good. Very friendly and welcoming staff which is what you want when your staying somewhere. Very clean and beds very comfy, Wud stay again probably. My husband loved it too. Thank you x
Afternoon Tea A Christmas present from my Grand daughter. My daughter and another Granddaughter came along too. Nice setting and grounds. Made to feel welcome and asked if we would like a 'cuppa' before we had our tea which was a nice gesture and one we accepted. Surprised to find sandwiches were of the 'open' sort and we had a tasty selection. Scones were lovely as were the cakes. Waiter kept coming to ask if we wanted 'top ups' and we had several. A very pleasant experience. N
I took my daughter and three friends as a treat for her 18th birthday. We were sat in the bar/restaurant area where there were no other diners just two meetings! no menus of what you were going to get. When we first arrived there was a large tv screen turned on to some vet programme showing surgery! Quite large open bread sandwiches. No offer of tea, maybe because we had ordered a bottle of prosecco, but was expecting to be asked if we would like tea so I had to ask. It was not special at all. I know it was quite cheap £13.50 a head so maybe I shouldn't have expected too much!! Needless to say I won't be going again. Plus side the scones were good!
Easy to get to, but that does mean you get road noise. Set in wonderful grounds. Building and rooms well presented, staff friendly. Dinner at Bartella's a must. Lovely breakfast. Some noise from the bar bur not excessive.
We were bought this by our parents as a Christmas pressie, no idea how much it cost etc - but a lovely pressie. We had lovely room (5) - on arrival once entering, we were met with a lovely smell but, a cold room - once we had put the radiator one and located the heater in the wardrobe it soon warmed up - I did note from a previous comment on here that also, when they arrived, room 5 was cold (maybe this could be addressed with house-keeping putting the radiator on prior to guests arriving. Room was lovely, it was upgraded to a deluxe room. The room in itself was lovely, a lovely comfy bed and furnishings but I do think the bathroom let it down a bet - a bit of bleach on the tiles maybe and in the corners. There are standard rooms, then executive room and then deluxe rooms - I think maybe I was expecting a bit more but nonetheless it was a comfortable room. We had a lovely evening meal and breakfast. Beer was a tad expensive at £5.40 for a pint of Peron. This was brought on a dinner, bed and breakfast best and was slightly surprised to be presented with a bit for service charge of £4.75 at the end of the evening. We had superb service and would have tipped but not happy about it being on the bill. It said "disc" which we presumed to mean "discretionary" when questioned we just got a confused face. We opted to cross it out and left a tip and we felt appropriate. A lovely place, glad we had room not facing the A12 (although we were over the kitchen) - we enjoyed it as a pressie but not sure at the real price.
Had a very pleasent stay at Ivy Hill. Pretty hotel in lovely grounds. All stall very nice and room was great. Massive bed and all very cosy. Saturday night in Bartellas was very enjoyable and food first clas. In fact I enjoyed the food more than when I ate in a very famous hotel in the west end beginning with C. Breakfast was also first class.
We found that the comfort and facilities were excellent and the staff very friendly and welcoming - much better than the norm. The breakfasts were well cooked. Our deal included dinner on the first night which was from a special menu. My only criticism here would be that most of this contained cheese, cream or yogurt and, being allergic I struggled. The waiter tried to help but I only really managed the soup. My husband's cheesy meal was fine. I did try to eat some frangipane tart but think the chef needs to practice some more!
My wife and I stayed after a function, not something we'd normally do, one of us would abstain from drinking and drive home as it's less than an hour away, however, this time we thought we'd treat ourselves and what a good idea it was. The room was well furnished and of a great size, certainly big enough for us (and others) to get ready before the event. There were tea and coffee facilities available but we couldn't find them (in the cupboard below the TV if anyone else is struggling). The evening meal was very pleasant, and the service team were quietly efficient without being stand offish, although one member of bar staff couldn't understand why I wanted a drink that our sponsors weren't providing and that I therefore had to pay for. Breakfast was an impressively sized buffet and it all tasted great. If we're invited to another event here, we'll definitely be staying over again. The only caveat would be take care with whom you book. We were told by Best Western it was £99.97 for the night, I was told by the event organiser to book directly as there was a discount on offer. When I tried to book directly they said that, with the discount, the price was £100. I pointed out the discrepancy and they said they'd honour the lower price but it doesn't seem to be much of a discount to me...
Great stay as usual. Just of the A12 so handy for getting into London or heading to heybridge where my offices are. Always clean and always friendly staff. Sometimes a bit pricey compared to other best westerns
We booked to accommodate a visit to family, without wanting to stay on their doorstep. A very cosy and comfortable hotel that made you feel welcome as soon as you arrived. It accommodates multiple meeting rooms so can be quite busy on weekends with birthdays, weddings etc not to mention meeting groups during mornings and afternoons. Therefore weekends can be a little bustling and noisy in the evening however not outrageously so. It has an beautiful up market restaurant that we never had the opportunity to try, though it seemed well supported particularly over the weekends. The lounge and breakfast room were lovely as were the staff who were always friendly and accommodating. There is not much to see or do within walking distance but a frequent bus service is a 5 minute walk to catch and takes you to nearby Chelmsford in 10 minutes or to the lovely village of Ingatestone 5 minutes in the opposite direction. A must visit place.
My husband Rob and I chose The Ivy Hill Hotel to hold our wedding. We booked it over a year ago and the whole process and professionalism of all staff leading up to the day itself was faultless. The day itself was amazing. We had the best day as did all our guests. We wanted to say a huge thank you to Aileen and her team for making the day run so smoothly. For anyone potentially considering this venue for their wedding do not hesitate.
Easy to locate directly on slip road from A12, signed on A12 when travelling East. Room and furnishings good, staff friendly and happy, which always helps! Restaurant modern but cosy, food good and reasonably priced. Nice pre-dinner lounge/bar. Breakfast served in dedicated room, excellent service with good food choice. We would recommend this hotel as welcoming, comfortable, and to a good standard.
Staff extremely helpful and really went the extra mile to help resolve getting a taxi on a Saturday evening. Breakfast was top notch and lots of choices. Had a great nights sleep in really comfortable beds. Would definitely recommend the hotel and would stay again if the need arises
My wife and I celebrated our Ruby wedding, with a party for 100 people in the Margaretting Suite at The Ivy Hill Hotel. The whole event went faultlessly and I cannot thank the staff enough for their friendliness, professionalism and first class service we were given. The food we had chosen was served throughout the evening and the quality was fantastic. Several of our party stayed the night and the following morning we were served with a wonderful breakfast. My wife and I have eaten many times in the restaurant and have never been disappointed with the quality. This being the reason we chose Ivy Hill for our special function. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.
A lovely small hotel, set in lovely countryside. The staff are all very helpful and friendly. The rooms are spacious are very comfortable. The bar is also really nice too. The breakfast was very nice. I would definitely recommend staying here.
We had a celebratory lunch last Sunday for 30 people in one of the function rooms at this hotel. It had been planned for some time and guests were asked to state their preference from a good choice of food in advance. There was also a children's menu so all were catered for. A private bar was available for guests to use on arrival, and from beginning to end everything went smoothly. Four guests also stayed at the hotel and they were very happy with their accommodation etc. The hotel is beautifully set with plenty of parking and I would not hesitate in using the hotel for a similar occasion. The food and service were very good and our thanks go to Libby (manager) and all the staff who looked after us on the day.
We were a group of about 20 people celebrating a milestone birthday. We had a room to ourselves at the hotel and the room was set out lovely. We had a three course meal which was served superbly and very tasty. Very attentive service.
Came here with the family for a birthday dinner. Service was lovely and the food was amazing. Very much enjoyed my starter which was the prawn and Crayfish & my main which was pork with creamy mash. I was even given a warm gluten free bread to eat at the start due to myself not being able to eat gluten. Myself and my partner are even thinking of coming back to have dinner again. ??
Had a special offer to go for Afternoon Tea at the Ivy Hill and was not disappointed. Food was very good - possibly one of the best afternoon teas I have ever had! Would recommend it - especially if you have the special offer!
We had an amazing experience with this hotel and would throughly recommend it!!! From the initial booking right through to when we left the following day Libby the hotel Manager and her team made us feel both special and completely at ease with the way they handled our wedding. The quality of the food and service and the room post function were all superb. Libby herself was an absolute star and was completely in control throughout. If you are thinking of booking a function here you will be over the moon!! A GREAT DAY!! Thanks Libby and team!
Firstly the staff were fantastic they couldn't have been more friendly and inviting. The fruit teas were beautiful I was slightly disappointed with the afternoon tea sandwiches when booking a traditional afternoon tea I expect cucumber and cream cheese the traditional stuff but instead we had smoked salmon and cream cheese although traditional there was a rim of fat on the salmon which I haven't seen before and I couldn't eat it. The egg mayo I gave to my nan as its not my taste and the Parma ham and tomato with maybe aubergine underneath we couldn't work out what it was just wasn't tasty at all. Apart from the that cakes were nice but my nan felt the scones were rock solid and not fresh which I do agree. Good for something different but not the traditional afternoon tea I was after
Really nice Hotel, great staff. Good breakfast and comfy beds. The location was perfect. The internet worked. Staff al friendly but the restaurant staff could do with a bit more training. Really good stay and thoroughly enjoyed our visit
I had booked the bridal suite and 3 other rooms for myself and my wedding party. The bridal suite is amazing. The room is spacious and nicely decorated and the bathroom is bright and modern. The staff were really helpful, bringing lunch and drinks up to the room for us. They also provided fans in the room as it was the hottest September day. Breakfast the next day was also delicious and lots of choice. The standard double bedrooms were also nicely decorated and spacious. I have seen other people complain about the road noise but myself and my husband didn't notice this at all but that might be because we were so tired from the busy day we had just had! All in all this is a lovely hotel with really friendly and helpful staff
Good points: * Superior room spacious and well laid out * Good shower and hot water * Comfortable bed * Good desk provided for laptop users * Wifi worked well * Generally very nice hotel But: * Noise - close to A12, permanent road noise with windows open * Some hairs in bath that were definitely not mine (otherwise very clean) * Breakfast waiter did not listen to my order Comments: I really liked the room but on a very hot August evening I had to have the windows open and there was permanent road noise from the concrete slab A12 which is about 100m away from the hotel (albeit in a shallow cutting). No air conditioning in superior room. Would have enabled me to close the window and have a quieter night. Breakfast waiter seemed overworked and got my breakfast order wrong. Given the price, can't justify 5*.
On August 13th 20016 my son and his fiancé chose this hotel for the venue for their wedding, this is the most beautiful place I have ever been to the staff were fantastic from the time wee arrived I'm disabled and I was able to go to most area's the only problem I found was the paths weren't laid down for wheelchairs so I was unable to get into some photo's the staff were very upset when I explained this to them. The food was amazing they had catered for everyone even some people with IBS they provided food for these people with no fuss the children's food was amazing too, tea's and coffee was flowing freely or if you wanted water that to was given freely too.after everything had finished we went to our room now because I have to sleep in my wheelchair This was a problem I know when the rooms were booked I was in a bed and it was our fault we hadn't changed the room for both my husband and I, however the staff were very nice I was prepared to go home in a taxi but the staff got us another room it was fantastic so big I was able to move around in the room in my chair and sleep in mmy chair.so the only thing I would suggest to the owners is please confided disabled people a little more please. Thank you so much for making my son and son in law's wedding day so memorabl.
I had my wedding and reception at this lovely venue, from start to finish the staff were amazing and they were very quick to deal with any issues that came up. The hotel had a number of function room and we chose the margaretting suite for our wedding, there was plenty of room for both the sit down meal and the dance floor area after they moved just two tables. The coordinator we delt with was fantastic she couldn't do enough for us to be honest all the staff were really great and there all approachable. The rooms are great sizes our guests that stayed over showed us there rooms they are a great size plenty of room. The food there was great we had afternoon tea and it was brilliant I never had an empty cup or glass. They have a good size car park and the grounds are beautiful. The only problem is I can't give it a higher rating. But I would really recommend this hotel.
Warm friendly welcoming and efficient staff added to a smallish intimate hotel with character and easily accessible location just off the A12 all contributed to a lovely stay. Would recommend the Best Western Ivy Hill.
The hotel is just off the A 12, a few miles from Chelmsford. It is situated in an old building and the rooms are scattered throughout the building. The room (superior) was large and comfortable with a sofa and tea tray. However, the bathroom was absolutely tiny and I would have expected a fridge in a superior room. It was very expensive for what it was. We did not eat in the restaurant. The bar is rather small but, although it was late in the evening when we were there, the service was excellent. Unlike at breakfast the following morning when a surly waitress informed us that there was no butter and we would have to have spread. We were not impressed either with that or the rest of the breakfast.
I really like the restaurant at this hotel and have reviewed it seperately in the past. I decided to use the restaurant again for my wife's birthday. To save any messing about I decided to book a room for the night. We were both very pleased. The room was clean and spacious and the bed was on of the most comfortable I have slept in whilst in a hotel. The breakfast the next morning was freshly cooked/ The staff were helpful and friendly. I will be using both the hotel and the restaurant again.
Another excellent Sunday afternoon tea. Very relaxed what better way to enjoy the sun than with a glass of prosecco and too many cakes! Service as ever (this is my third afternoon tea here) was excellent, very relaxed atmosphere. Very clean tea and coffee excellent. Sandwiches excellent.
My family and I had a comfortable stay here. There was me, my partner and our two children aged 7 and 1. Our room was a good size. Very clean and comfortable. Due to how nice the hotel was and how well it was kept, I did kind of expect a mini fridge, which would of been perfect for us with our littlest one. Not a problem though. The staff were very welcoming and vey nice. The receptionist let us check in early, which was fantastic for us after a long drive (subject to whether the room was ready). The breakfast was okay. Plenty of options. My only gripe was the bacon wasn't cooked well enough for my liking. The breakfast staff were very nice again. The only problem with this place for me, wasn't the motorway (which I couldn't hear with the window closed), but the doors slamming. This kept our 1 year old up through the night (doesn't have a problem sleeping usually). This made him very grumpy in the morning and very much made mine and my partners day very hard. Don't get me wrong though, this is a very nice hotel and I would of given it 5 stars if the doors just didn't slam. We also left some stuff at the hotel and the have mailed the stuff back to us (at our cost of £8 PP) still, nice of them to contact us and give us the option as to whether we wanted it or not.
The hotel seems to have had a recent make over so it looks smart and clean plus staff were welcoming. The hotel was very empty and we found out why. The major flaw is the noise from the 3 lane A 12 which it sits directly over, PLUS next door they hold Indian weddings, fireworks and revving engines at midnight! Myself and my colleague were here on business, so we need to sleep and always ask for quiet rooms. We are used to staying in hotels during the week but both of us felt really worn out the next day through lack of sleep. Unless you are used to sleeping alongside a race track, then give this a miss. On check out we asked if there were quieter rooms but the position of the hotel up high, alongside this 24 hour 3 lane A road, means that you can't escape it. Sadly, as its right in the location we need to visit regularly, its off our list!
stayed at this hotel for the first time-good location and nice hotel and restaurant-good food and service-drinks pricey-£5.20 a pint. rooms were ok but I stayed during the very hot period and no air con in rooms-couldn't open window as road noise was bad.
We got married in London and had a Reception at Tower Bridge as Mandy has been in love with the Bridge since she was a girl. We wanted to celebrate near home with friends and family and looked for a venue. We found a perfect venue when we went to a wedding fair at the hotel. Initially Mary and then Libby, led us through the whole process effortlessly and we ended up with the perfect evening celebration. Late on in our arrangements we changed our choice to The cocktail party selection with various hot dishes, delicious desserts and canapés, all served to our guests throughout the evening, instead of buffet style which was particularly appreciated by us and our guests. Later on sandwiches were served along with the wedding cake, this was all part of the cocktail party package, although the late serving of sandwiches was Libby's idea, which went down perfectly with everyone ! This added to the whole experience being one of great joy. All of the staff serving food or tending bar were great. All our guests had nothing but compliments for the level of service and for the fantastic food served throughout the reception. Guests and ourselves booked out the whole hotel and some of the sister hotel. Unfortunately the honeymoon suite was already booked out months ahead. So book early if you want to have the suite along with your reception. The entire hotel is very clean and well kept with beautiful gardens - fantastic for wedding pictures ! We felt we were in safe hands throughout the whole process right from the initial booking and the staff were very helpful and curteous regardless of how many times I called with queries, changes or general worries - which they assured me was perfectly normal !!! We are very happy to recommend the Ivy Hill to anyone booking a celebration, large or small ??
Used this hotel many times this time for a big party couldn't thank the friendly staff enough the service was outstanding and the hotel manager is one of the best . The facilities we were given were ideal for the event and we will keep using the hotel which has easy access from the a12. Some of the guests stayed the night and loved the place . The food was also outstanding so all in all fantastic place
Room was ok but nothing special, kettle was broken and no trouser press or iron in room.Nowhere in bathroom to put toilet bag, very small. Breakfast was very good and staff were helpful.unfortunately I left my iPad charger in room so I phoned hotel and they said they had found it. I asked if they would post it back and of course I was willing to pay postage but they said there would be a £5 admin charge which was ridiculous and I just wonder where their goodwill is. We had paid £250 for a 2 night stay surely they could have posted it back without this charge. We shall never stay in a Best Western again
When we arrived we were pleased with the appearance of the hotel and grounds however, we had to wait for 20 minutes in the lounge bar until the official 3 PM check in time and then had an easy check-in. One of the reception staff took our case up to the room, to our delight as there is no lift. The room was excellent if very hot (mid June) so we opened the window to cool off and left it open all night. The beds were very soft and comfortable, the TV had all Freeview channels and the room light off switch was in the right place for switching off from the bed! The bathroom had a bath and shower with constant hot water and fluffy, high quality towels. We ate in the hotel on the first night, very good but drinks a tad pricey, and had breakfast on both mornings, superb. WiFi was strong in all areas including the bedrooms. All in all, an excellent hotel with excellent floor staff in the restaurant and reception.
I look after a couple with learning disabilities and a couple of weeks ago was their 5th wedding anniversary. Last minute a member of staff and I decided to book them afternoon tea somewhere. We called around so many places and kept being told "to short notice" when we called the ivy hill we were told no problem. When we arrived the staff couldn't have been more friendly and treating the couple like royalty. The food was amazing and very reasonably priced. The couple I look after can't wait to go back (I'm also finding reason to go again)
This Best Western is a really well presented hotel with beautifully kept grounds. The rooms are clean crisp and fresh the staff are friendly, polite and really well presented as are all the public areas a real credit to Best Western. The one area that I feel that needs some thought perhaps from the management is their attitude towards customer service. On the evening of my stay I had to return a beer which was short measured and then again as it was really not tasting great. Secondly I didn't enjoy my Mackerel starter at all, so much so I had to leave it practically untouched. When asked was it okay I mentioned I just did not enjoy it which admittedly is a personal thing but on both the beer and the starter not once was I offered any form of alternative or recompense both were just taken back but charged for. Not sure this is the best attitude. This slight hiccup may be just me but I certainly will seek this hotel out again when in the area.
On arrival staff were polite and helpful. At the restaurant staff were extremely amenable. It had the benefit of free wifi which was available in all areas of the hotel and room. A must for me. I had a great sleep as the bed was wonderfully comfortable and the breakfast was equally good.
Me and my family took my mum for a special birthday surprise. The tea which was served was good at first but when refilled the tea was colourless and tasteless as the pot had been filled up with water without putting anymore teabags in the pot. The sandwiches which did not look like sandwiches were 3 slices of bread with fillings on top. The cake selection was good. When the waiter came out with the end of a lemon on a plate with a candle in it singing happy birthday it didn't look very good. It would of been far better to put a candle in one of the cakes. Would not recommend the afternoon tea. It was the worst one I have ever been to.
Stayed one night on business! Arrived a little early but reception staff were very helpful and efficient and allocated me a room! Room very clean indeed and lovely size! Had an evening meal in the restaurant and can honestly say food was amazing! Breakfast also very good and a good start to the day! Must say one of the nicest hotels I have stayed in! Staff made it a pleasant stay!
We got married here in 2010, the staff are amazing and so helpful. We have returned every year since to celebrate each year. We have always been remembered by staff on arrival. The rooms are stunning and the grounds are beautiful. We love the restaurant Bartellas which has also recently been moved to the top and redecorated and is just stunning
We have stayed her now at least 4 times having the need to visit Chelmsford on occasions. The gardens and thus the outlook from some of the public rooms are particularly charming .Rooms are adequate with good size very comfy beds beds ...showers we have had are over baths but excellent pressure...bathrooms a bit tatty but okay . We have had excellent meals at the Bartellas restaurant and we found all the staff charming. No evening restaurant meal on sundays but bar meals and room service have good choice .We like the atmosphere here and would recommend .
very nice hotel and easy to get to . Good size rooms and very clean . Nice bathroom with shower and good size bath. Enjoyed my vegetarian meal and wine but very busy could get a table for night out of 4 ! Beautiful grounds & gardens with very pretty ponds.
Think the room must have been above the kitchens. Had to catch a flight early the next morning and the constant door banging and noise from beneath us kept us awake all night! The hotel and staff were fine. Think we were just unlucky with this room.
We visited this hotel for a group function. The setting is picturesque and well maintained in the Essex countryside. The rooms were clean and tidy but a bit small and stuffy. The shower was excellent and the bathroom immaculate. The bed was really comfortable especially the pillows. The staff were friendly, polite and helpful. The bar food was really tasty and a good selection. Breakfast was as required - good full English with 'proper' sausages. We enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning.
As this was a Best Western Hotel, we were extremely disappointed. We were here for a family wedding and stayed two nights. On arrival we were asked for a credit card and later that day we found £80 had been deducted although we had paid cash for a bar snack and coffee. When we asked about this at reception, we were told it was standard practice and the money was some form of guarantee. Having travelled extensively we have never encountered this before. My partner had requested an upgrade and this was a total waste of £170 a night. The so -called superior room had a double bed with a tacky homemade four-poster attachment that was made from offcuts that matched the wooden dressing table. The evening meal in Bartellas restaurant that operates in the hotel was surprisingly awful and expensive and choice was limited. My chicken chasseur consisted of one very small leg of chicken covered in a bland tomato mixture that seemed to have been poured from a tin of tomatoes. It was tasteless and another disappointment. I have seen better school dinners. The dessert, a warm carrot cake and sorbet was delicious, but overall the dining experience was not one we wanted to repeat. Likewise, breakfast was adequate but nothing special. Sadly, the hotel is positioned by a busy main road and the traffic noise is constant. This was the worst place we have visited.
Best Western are very keen to push their Rewards program. However as I have had several email discussions with their Customer Services, stating that most hotels do not recognise guests as members of the program. I am a Diamond level member, but was not welcomed as a member on arrival, was not offered the advertised 'Welcome Gift', in fact on arrival I was not told anything regarding location or times of the restaurant or bar, was not asked if I wanted a newspaper or wake up call, was not asked anything regarding my membership of the loyalty program, as was not advised of wiifi connections or anything else regarding my stay. I had to return to reception after unpacking in my room, to request a newspaper! So once again despite head offices assurances regarding changes to the loyalty scheme, again I received no recognition or benefits for my loyalty to the BW brand! The next issue was when I went to the lounge bar and asked for a pint of Orange Juice and Soda Water. The barman served me, less than half a pint of orange juice from a pre-opened Carton of supermarket type concentrate, in a straight glass, that was 95% full with orange juice and then he added a dash of soda water. If this wasn't bad enough, he then charged me £5.00 for a glass of orange juice he had poured from a carton! NOT ACCEPTABLE! Later that evening I ordered Room Service of Fish and Chips, when placing my order I was asked "Do you want any sauces with that?" I replied "No just some Salt and Vinegar Thank You". When the meal arrived, there was not only no vinegar, but also none of the advertised Tartar Sauce, instead there was a tiny pot with virtually nothing in it, of Honey and Mustard dressing? Fish and Chips should be served with the advertised Tartar Sauce and certainly not Honey and Mustard! So basically my initial experience at check in was a let down due to lack of information and guidance from the receptionist, plus the fact that despite Best Western continually assuring me that all hotels now offered a 'Welcome Gift' and room upgrades to loyal rewards members, I was not even acknowledged as a Diamond level member. then I was charged an extortionate amount for the part contents of a concentrated orange juice from a carton that had been sat open for who knows how long. And then I was served Fish and Chips without the advertised accompaniments but with an inappropriate pot of sauce that wasn't worth bothering with due to the miserly amount! Also the management needs to employ someone to install adequate 'Door Closure' mechanisms on all the rooms, as currently no matter how quietly you attempt to shut the door to a room, it slams shut once it is 3/4 closed, this results in a cacophony of slamming doors to wake you in the morning. If you are going to brand yourself under Best Western in order to attract Customers, you should adhere to their loyalty scheme and comply with its advertised benefits. You should review the pricing structure for sub quality soft drinks and you should ensure that the chef serves the food that is advertised in the menu and tastes the food he is serving, to ensure he does not think Fish goes with Honey and Mustard dressing. I could go on, regarding the layout of breakfast items, open to all and sundry to prod, poke and cough over and tea and coffee served from a flask. but by this time my belief in the hype for this establishment had already vanished and I was sure I would not be returning or recommending it, or its sister hotel to anyone I considered a friend.
My husband is 92 years old and no longer driving following two strokes. A granddaugter was being married in Chelmsford & he was anxious to be there. We drove from North of Aberdeen to Chelmsford last October having booked three nights on the way - in Edinburgh, North Yorkshire and finally Chelmsford.on the night before the wedding. All three Best Westerns we stayed in were suited to our requirements although we had booked only 1-2 weeks in advance. They were easy to find using the car Sat.Nav. and service was very good. Food was of a high standard and buffet breakfast suited us. On the return journey we had no reservations but again used the same hotel chain in Grantham - a characterful old coaching inn which still has stables - and near Gretna. Room prices ranged from £79 per night for a twin room to £90 for one which had not been pre-booked. We have previously stayed in Best Westerns in North and South Lanarkshire and Edinburgh and they are by far our first choice for the future. There is a Best Western 'catalogue' so it is easy to plan around their many sights
I booked Afternoon Tea for myself and my family as a Christmas present but waited for warmer weather so we were excited to finally go. The hotel, grounds and outdoor terrace are beautiful and cannot fault the location. Lovely open sandwiches and they were very accommodating of fussy eaters, making plain ham and cheese for them. My only gripe is that having not eaten all day in anticipation, we was only served 3 open sandwiches and a cheese straw for savoury. When we asked if there was a possibility of more sandwiches we was told that would be an extra charge. I felt this was a little unreasonable considering we had paid £20 per head for what was essentially 3 slices of bread! However cake selection was lovely as were the drinks.
This was my first time booking into a hotel. I was not sure of the location, plus we decided to be adventurous and use public transport. We had a little difficulty and the driver stopped at the stop before the one we needed. Eventually were got there, 11/2 hours earlier than our booked time. The young lady and the desk did not hesitate to check us in even though we were early. Thank you so much. The room was perfect for us as we just want to rest. Sleep came within minutes in addition to rain making it very cosy. It's exactly as stated on the web page. Got up in time to have a lovely in house dinner for to. Best of all to be waited on and every request was granted for the 2 nights stay.
I stayed for one night at Ivy Hill on business and ran a conference there the following day. I cannot fault the service from the friendly staff from the minute I arrived: they even provided me with a toothbrush as I had forgotten mine! My bedroom was immaculate and stylish and evening meal delicious. I even got the opportunity to enjoy the beautiful grounds as the sun was shining. My conference room was set up exactly as required and the delegates were kept fed and watered throughout the day. Thank you, Ivy Hill. I look forward to my next visit!
Fantastic hotel to break my journey, delivered way more than I expected for the price! Try it - the interior is clean, bright and modern. The bedrooms are superb I've paid much more at other hotels with more stars only to be very disappointed. This one delivers.
Made to feel very welcome, staff great and friendly. Food amazing, rooms stunning. Came for a wake and the staff were very respectful and friendly. Food in the restaurant was stunning and our waiter was outstanding. After drinks in the bar was great fun in a great setting. Room was great, bed comfortable.
I have just celebrated my 60th birthday at Ivy hill hotel. We had the private room for parties of 15 or more, all I can say is it went so well, all staff excellent and standard of service wonderful from start to finish. All my guests have said it was a great night. The venue was beautiful and food excellent I would highly recommend. I can't thank the staff enough for making it the best birthday ever.
very comfortable bed ,clean rooms, if on the small side, good buffet breakfast with plenty of choice and well presented, really helpful and friendly staff good location just off the motorway but with very little traffic noise
Myself and my partner visited the I've hill hotel for our anniversary. The interior of the hotel was beautiful and light. Our rooms were very spacious and beautiful. I would definitely recommend to a friend. The food and the wine were spectacular along with the amazing service we received from the staff.
Had a great afternoon tea on 2nd April. There were 5 lively under 7 year olds in the party of 29, but everyone was made welcome. The tea was lovely and the staff were extremely helpful, both on the day and beforehand. Thank you!
Stay here on a regular basis, one of, if not the best hotel I use in the UK Comfortable with a great restaurant, staff fantastic, rooms and beds good quality. Bar area has good ambience and breakfast is good quality.
We had a lovely afternoon tea. Both food and service excellent, could not falt it and I'm fussy had such a lovely time have booked again for next month. Not only that just booked my daughters wedding here. If this is the standard of service it's hard to beat,
This was our second stay here.we also had our Xmas day lunch here which was the best we had ever had when eating out.the reception staff are lovely.we were in room 17 which was immaculate and to a very high standard.we had a couple of drinks in the longe bar where we were served by really nice ,efficient and pleasant bar lady.unlike our last stay the breakfast was buffet style which I personally do not like.but apart from the bacon being only lukewarm the choices and quality of cereals sausages etc were very good.would definitely always stay here when visiting family in chelmsford
Ideally located to explore the towns and the coast. Lovely hotel with lovely grounds. Unable to sit outside at this time of year but can imagine it would be lovely on a summer evening, helpful staff and comfortable facilities. Would highly recommend.
When booking online this place looked perfect for us, there was 7 of us that stayed here for one night. It was a work stop over so we wanted something very basic and simple. We arrived and all booked in and was given our room keys, from walking into the reception and outside the hotel looked lovely. I had a twin room, it was a rather big room, 2 single beds of course, dressing table, wardrobe, TV, Hairdryer, Bathroom, with bath and a shower head, towels were provided, and also a hair and body wash. I was very happy with my room, I think I over looked the car park so I didn't get much of a view. We went down for Dinner about 7. We had a few drinks in the bar before hand, lovely bar, the whole area was lovely. We then went though to the other side for our meal, it was sort of split into two, I believe form how it sounded the Hotel bar and the restaurant were separate. We got shown to our table and seated. The staff were lovely. We got asked for drinks first and then someone came back to take our orders. We ordered some starters, and the main meal. First out came some bread maybe after 10 minutes of them taking our order, we had then finished our bread and a little while later our starters came out. Someone within the group ordered a starter which came out later than the rest of the food, because it had been put onto the main meal instead of starter but as soon as we asked about it, it was sorted and came out.. we then had a longer wait for our mains to come out. Food was amazing, from the bread to the main course, I couldn't fault the food. There is a big range to choose from. We were then given the menu back again for afters once are plates had been taken away. These come out the quickest. We were sitting down for the total of 2 hours. Which was a long meal, and we did have some long waits between food, but as it was a big group of us we didn't notice as much as you would have if there was two of you. Once we had finished out meal a few of us when back to the hotel bar, which was closed, we thought 9 was a little early for it to close. But the restaurant bar was still open, we were only able to buy one round of drinks in cash before they then closed the tills and it had to be put onto the rooms. In the morning we went down for breakfast, there was a big range of food to chose from. A few of us ordered breakfast from the menu and we had about a 30 -45 minute wait for a English Breakfast. We did notice a few people around us also had a long wait for their food. Food Service overall was very poor and slow.
Fantastic afternoon tea had here for Mother's Day celebrations, staff were very attentive all afternoon. Nothing was too much trouble, the food was fantastic value for money. Will definitely be booking further family events here, I couldn't fault anything.
My Grandson got married there 29th February and from start to finish it was a brilliant day. Everything went like clockwork, food great, service brilliant and everyone had a great time. Nothing was too much trouble. Thank you all for making his day special.
A few of us stayed here when at wriggle college on a 2 day course. The hotel was very nice, with very comfortable and spacious rooms. The restaurant served fantastic food but was a bit over priced for the portion size
My wife and I held our joint 60th and 65th birthdays party in the Margaretting Suite . The food was superb , the service fantastic and the venue perfect. Many of the guests stayed overnight and we were all delighted with both the rooms and the varied and plentiful breakfast. If you are looking to hold a event in the Chelmsford area look no further you will be disappointed . I don't know who selects and trains the staff here but they are obviously very good at their job. Big thanks to everyone that made our day extra special.
This was booked for my sister's 60th Birthday and we had a meal in the restaurant for Sunday lunch at 2pm. We also had family staying for the weekend here so they also ate Saturday night dinner and breakfast on both days of the weekend. We were all blown away with the venue, quality of the service and the amazing quality of the food. OUR COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF and backroom restaurant staff - we decided we must come back here again and despite the fact we are all pretty picky we were all very impressed. Thoroughly recommended.
I booked a table here for my nan's birthday and what a great choice I made. The service was fantastic from the moment we arrived. When I booked I asked for a corner table, and when we arrive a lovely table in the corner had been reserved for us so I was pleased with that. Once we were seated the waitress was very quick to get our drinks and then not too long after the sandwiches came to the table. Once all the sandwiches were finished we had a little break and then came the sweet. My nan looked at the selection of sweet treat and seemed very overwhelmed but she said they were all so delicious she couldn't help but eat her share!!! the food and service here was fab and the price is very good also! I would definitely return here for afternoon tea again!
AFTERNOON TEA is great! Especially if you go when there is a special offer on. Hotel is great - have stayed a few times when attending functions in the area, and it has never disappointed. Have yet to use it for dinner, but I am sure it is great too.
afternoon teas on a rainy Essex day.plenty of room in the carparks.upon entering we was greeted by happy smiley people.a nice warm friendly atmosphere.seated within minutes and served by attentive staff throughout our 2hr stay.although 3 pieces of bread with topping, the cakes made up for what I thought was miserly.we came out stuffed.the tea and coffee went down well.no hurry or worry we left when we was ready.very pleased with our day.
booked for afternoon on a Travel zoo offer, which was good value for money! We were seated in a comfortable airy lounge area, which was very spacious, clean and stood up to our expectations. We were served with individual platters with a selection of savouries for each person. These were tasty, however could be a problem with someone with a fussy palate. They served cheese straw and open sandwiches of salmon and cream cheese, egg mayo and olive tapas with Serano ham. The sweet options were great, the traditional scones with cream and jam , baileys cake, carrot cake, meringues and chocolate dipped strawberries! All washed down with a glass of prosecco and several pots of tea! The most delightful thing about the afternoon was that the staff were friendly very attentive and we felt under no pressure to hurry, a very enjoyable experience!
Very nice venue with pleasant and friendly staff. Comfortable rooms with all you need for your stay. Have booked my "big" birthday to hold there this year, having already had my last "big" birthday there 10 years previous!
Family Sunday lunch party for twenty-two, including five children, for a 90th birthday, was outstandingly successful and marvelously and efficiently hosted at the Ivy Hill Hotel. Thanks are due to the wonderful manager and staff for diligent attention and service before and throughout the occasion. Menu choice was appealing and wide-ranging; welcome was cordial, warm and particularly attentive to the ninety-year old birthday mum, nan, great-nan; food was served to everyone at same time, on time, was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented. Private lunch room and adjacent private bar was ideal, warm, table laid up exactly, and opened onto attractive garden. Meal and afternoon was unhurried. Every attention to detail was there. Staff could not have done anything more to help along a thoroughly enjoyable family celebration. Absolutely recommend for any similar family occasion.
One night here on business booked last minute so nearer appointment next day. Booked by phone, easy to do and agreeable rate. As last minute and late arrival didn't use the bar or restaurant, cooked breakfast however was very good. Bed extremely comfortable and room quiet as at back. Checking out was quick and easy. Will certainly use again next time in the area.
Stayed with colleagues on business. Very comfortable hotel with a great choice of breakfast inclusive in the price. In addition, guests can use the spa of there sister hotel (which I've forgotten), but it's approx 10 mins drive away in a country home. Food at the sister hotel was exquisite, far superior than the Ivy and a must for guests to try. Overall however, great stay, comfortable beds, great breakfast, wonderful location right by the motorway (yet very quiet), but recommend facilities and food of the sister hotel.
I stayed at this hotel on business and was happy with the welcome. The executive room was spacious but a little dated in parts. I would expect bottled water as standard in this category of room without having to request it. The wifi connection was not 100% reliable. The service at dinner in the restaurant was outstanding. Lorna takes great pride in her work and aims to please. The good was of very good quality. All was fine until recently breakfast service the next morning. There was nobody to greet me on arrival do after waiting 3 minutes I chose my own table. There followed an exchange of 4 letter expletives between the breakfast staff which was totally unacceptable. Although this took place in the kitchen, it was loud enough for all to hear.
I stayed at the Ivy Hill hotel for a family gathering that was near by so we had no choice but to stay there. We had a family room that cost £180 for the night with breakfast. I called to ask about early check in and was charged another £25 so in total £205, I have stayed in many hotels ranging from budget to 5 star hotels and never paid this amount for an average hotel. What left a sour taste in my mouth was the fact I called a few days before to see if there was a free family room the night before my check in date (not revealing that I was booked in for the night, out of curiosity to see what the cost would be) and there was availability with a much lower cost of £115 per night. The hotel hiked up the prices as they knew they had a family gathering and people would need to stay there. Hotel staff were polite and pleasant and the room was clean. Breakfast very average, nothing special. I would not stay here again based on value for money, too expensive.
We stayed one night in this hotel whilst attending a family funeral in Chelmsford. We booked an Executive Double room which was disappointing being small with a tiny bathroom and not what we expect from a higher priced room. We arrived at 4pm and the room was cold, the heating did not come on till well after 6pm and the bathroom radiator never heated up. The room was clean and the bed comfortable but the bathroom was poor. There was mould around the bath handles and the window frame over the bath was disgraceful having a lot of mould around the frame. The only place to put our bathroom items was on a ledge over the toilet which is far from ideal. We took dinner in the restaurant. The food was average and overpriced for its quality. It is about time that restaurants learned that serving food on pretentious slates which are cold means that the food quickly loses its heat. This was a poor experience overall and we would not use this hotel again.
My terminally ill wife and I enjoyed afternoon tea in the Ivy Hill Hotel so much she wanted her wake to be there. As, sadly, she passed away just before Christmas we approached the hotel to see if could be arranged according to her wishes. Despite the Christmas closures nothing was too much trouble. We had a large private room set out with a continually refreshed central buffet as guests worked through the courses, but also plenty of tables for those who wanted to sit. The hotel manager and Bartellas restaurant manager whilst being unobtrusive, made certain things went according to plan. We were never rushed and the whole occasion "did my wife proud". Superb.
Stayed here as part of the Bartellas New Year Gala Dinner package. Check-in was smooth, friendly and efficient. Our room was on the first floor and the view of the services ducting and pipework is such a common sight with my many hotel stays that I'm so used to it!!! The room itself appeared to be recently refurbished with good quality furniture and fittings and it was spacious. We had a decent and comfortable few hours sleep after the New Year revelry in Bartellas restaurant (see separate review), then woke up for breakfast. Breakfast is a self-service buffet arrangement and the various hot dishes were good quality possibly sourced from the same places as Bartellas restaurant unlike some processed foods I encounter on my UK hotel business stays, in fact if breakfast was served in Bartellas restaurant, it would be just as good as their other meals! Overall, we live only 50 miles from this hotel so wouldn't stay here on a regular basis, but it was a lovely way of finishing off our best ever New Year in England.
the evening was a Club Christmas dinner for 32 of us. We had a private room which was a bonus since we had complete privacy. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the ambience, food, service and the table settings. With the room included the cost per head was very reasonable and the location was easily accessible for the club. For those who stayed the night, room was clean and bright and breakfast was fine.
We visited the hotel to attend a charity function also at the hotel, managing to book a room for the night. The hotel is set in lovely grounds and the staff were attentive without being overbearing. The room was very nice, although the absence of an extractior fan did make the room steamy once the shower was used.
Made very welcome. Room (executive) small but clean and comfortable. Ate in restaurant that evening. Not busy but service slowish (I suspect kitchen also busy with function in suite next door). Food good but mix up over "pie of the day" not chicken and leek as promised but steak in red wine gravy! Friendliness just brings thgia out of average category.
Had a good evening with friends(12) table was excellent near dance floor, I little loud, but didn't notice as night went on?? Robbie Williams singer was excellent had all the right faces, dance moves and voice good too, and was enjoyable and I'm not a Robbie fan. The food as not as good as expected starters for myself and husband was poor, a wedge of goats cheese on a few salad leaves and same for prawn cocktail, prawns on some leaves, Main we both had turkey what was ok, average for this time of year, pudding was a trio, I'm sorry so say I like only the shortbread biscuit, my husband said it was again ok? Drinks 1 round inc 2 bottles of wine, 6pints of larger 3 vodkas £82:00 I have been to Bartellas lots of times, can't compare, completely different. Would go again to party nights but not for the food
Went last Friday for a charity event, this is a lovely venue with nice food for 'mass catering' although the only quibble I would have was the price of drinks which were notably spiteful...... I would recommend it but be aware you will not be having a cheap night despite the reasonable room prices!
I have just spent three night at the hotel as I have been working in the area. The hotel is well appointed and the staff are extremely helpful. The restaurant is excellent with good choices on the menu, including vegetarian options and the desserts are "to die for" will need to go on a diet when I get home !! It is very relaxing, which is important when you are travelling for business purposes. I cannot believe it does not have a four star rating as it certainly deserves one !
First time I have stayed in a 3* Hotel for years. Was attending a function here so decided to stay over. No criticisms at all except we could have done with a bigger room (booked an Executive double the middle price category), when checking out the following day I mentioned this to the receptionist who said that their 'Deluxe doubles' were bigger so would book one of these next time. Bed and breakfast inc vat and service, £130 per night, excellent value! The hotel has a charm of it's own, is very clean, comfortable, warm (went down to below freezing whist we were there) and the staff most welcoming and friendly. Parts of the property have been modernised but this didn't appear to affect the overall ambience. Never fancied staying at a 'Best Western' property before, but if they are all like this one, then I wouldn't hesitate again! And the wifi is free and instant, not even a password required! 5* Hotels could learn from this!!
terrible night noise of a motor that sounded like a extractor fan next door 23.00 and night porter refused to knock on the room next door or move me. comment from porter always get complaints from room 4. day service great but avoid a night overstay.
I arranged a Lunch Party, held at The Ivy Hill Hotel to celebrate my aunt's 90th birthday last Saturday. The hotel's staff were very helpful with the planning and although we changed our minds several times as to what we were eating and how many people were coming, nothing was a problem or too much trouble for them to arrange. In the end 30 of us sat down to a very good cold buffet - rare sirloin of beef, English ham, salmon and all the trimmings. We provided our own specially made birthday cake - again no problem - and the wine flowed. Family and friends came from far and wide, everything went precisely according to plan. Aileen and her team provided a first class, unobtrusive service throughout. The only eventuality that wasn't planned was the accident at the top of the slip road off the A12, which for a time blocked the access drive into the hotel ! Other than that, The Ivy Hill Hotel did “Exactly what it said on the Tin” Thank you all. You had 30 very satisfied customers.
Really good hotel for commuters (and I assume leisure visitors too). The staff are friendly and accommodating, the facilities are clean and of a good quality. The food is very nice and the restaurant is flexible to accommodate dietary requirements, and the need for a bit of variety in the menu.
70 guests attended a Sunday luncheon party in the Margaretting Suite. Drinks in the Orangery were followed by 3 course excellent meal with musical accompaniment by a great violinist, Caroline Pattrick who we booked via the hotel. Later a close table magician 'Papalarny' entertained the guests followed by dancing. Hotel manager Libby was supported by her wonderful staff including head waitress Marion who made the day go so smoothly. There were many thoughtful touches and suggestions that really put the seal on a totally wonderful day. This newly refurbished property must now rank as one of the finest dining locations and party venues in Chelmsford.
Great place to stay. It's obviously been updated and renovated and they've done a nice job. Nothing negative to say (other than they could have been a bit more generous with the in-room tea and milk) decent, solid hotel, not top notch but clean, comfortable, polite and with a good brekkie.
Been here on a few occasions and the place only get's better, this is a family owned Hotel which prides itself on great personal service , this time we went for a Children's birthday organised by the hotel the service from the time we arrived was more then outstanding, the food was superb and the whole experience was just outstanding. We will recommend this place to our family and friends .10 out of 10.
We stayed at this hotel for a family wedding, .although you not offically book in before 1400 hrs we arrived at 1100 hrs with the full intention of just requesting a storage area for our overnight bag as the wedding was at Highlands house at 1230 hrs. The young ladies on the desk were extremely courteous and informed us that our room was reading and we could book in then at no extra cost which was excellent. The room was outstanding as was the breakfast the next morning, although he A12 is very close there was no noise to disturb our sleep, we were in room 24 (recommend). The staff were extremely atentive and nothing was to much trouble. An excellent stay and reccomended.
Me and a group of friends recently visited for afternoon tea and had a lovely time. We had the restaurant to ourselves which was great, and enjoyed a lovely selection of sandwiches, drinks, cakes and scones. The food was gorgeous and the waiter took the time to explain all the food to us and make sure we were happy. The restaurant space is very modern and cosy, making for a great space to enjoy a couple of hours with friends. Highly recommended!
We stayed at this hotel as part of the family wedding we booked a superior deluxe room which was clean and tidy but it was much bigger than a standard room unfortunately the shower was above the bath and not a walk in apart from that it was okay The breakfast was okay as expected only problem was there was a lot of people 30/40 walking back and forwards through breakfast room from a conference room. Using it as a shortcut I think this was very annoying for me
I stayed at this Hotel as I was on a course there the next day. the staff were very attentive. I had a meal in the Bartellas restaurant which was very good, and again well looked after by the staff, even though I had a strange request with my meal. (I cant eat white bread and had the burger) Free WiFi. My only problem which the hotel had no control over was the inconsiderate gits who at 02:10hrs came back and were talk9ing loudly in the corridor. So Bronte and your mates hang your head in shame, I just hope that me getting up at 06:30hrs created as much noise as you did at ten past two.
Had Afternoon Tea with 11 friends, great time to visit as was lovely and quiet and had the whole place to ourselves (booking was 4pm - 6pm). The waiter was extremely attentive and explained the flavours of the cakes. Very tasty open sandwiches. Enjoyed the salmon and the Parma ham.
The Executive deluxe double rooms was really lovely and the beds was so comfortable. We all enjoyed our evening meal immensely and the restaurant service was excellent. But was disappointed with the service at breakfast. Had to keep asking staff for plates and food and drink that had run out on buffet service. Also they did not clear our breakfast bowls from our table. Informed reception that there was no water in our rooms(at £120 a night) to be told that they do not do this. But they would put a jug of ice water in our rooms if we so wished, which we did.
