Brought here by the wife for a little treat. Lovely hotel, great location. Spotlessly clean, furnished in a style which perfectly suits the age of the building. Lovely change from large impersonal hotels and probably the friendliest most helpful staff I've come across in a long time. Highly recommended!

Upon arrival was greeted with a friendly smile and was very helpful. The Hotel was clean and located close to the town center. Breakfast was good and friendly service. Would recommend this hotel to friends. The only gripe i had was the key card would not function when we returned later in the day and had to have it reactivated, then the next day it happened again. After going up a load of stairs then having to go down again to reception, then up the stairs again.

Thank you for taking the time and reviewing your recent stay with us here at Marmadukes Town House Hotel. We are very lucky with our location, a short walk away from all of York's attractions but set back down a quiet street. All of the team very extremely hard to ensure that all of our guests enjoy their time with us. I am pleased that you received our Yorkshire Marmadukes welcome and found the building clean. The housekeeping team will appreciate your kind feedback. I am sorry that your key card deactivated resulting in the trips back to reception, this can be cased by the key been located next to mobile phones or shop security barriers. We do suggest to have this reprogrammed prior to going back into your room. We hope to see you again in the future. Kindest Regards, Emily Ullathorne

"Missing key amenities "

20/08/2018

Lovely staff, clean with impressive antiques however for us it was missing a few key items-- like in-room wifi (just in common areas), a shower (tub with hand-held shower head), and the bed was lumpy with a stained box spring.

Marmadukes Town... H, Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review

We hope to see you again in the future. Kindest Regards, Emily Ullathorne

"Great break to celebrate my birthday"

19/08/2018

We visited York in April, we love the city and every time we visit we find new and lovely places to try. York is blessed with many independent and individual restaurants, bars, coffee/tea shops and hotels as well as the corporate ones. Our favourite restaurant in York the Park is also in our wonderful hotel called Marmadukes where we stayed for our latest visit. The service and standard of rooms is always superb. Nothing is too much trouble. When we arrived our room was ok but because the weather was good felt a bit hot. We were offered another room which was nice and airy and perfect for the stay. Coupled with a wonderful birthday meal in the Park the s experience was fabulous.

Marmadukes Town... H, Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review

We hope to see you again in the near future. Kindest Regards, Emily Ullathorne

"Tired old hotel. "

12/08/2018

When we arrived at the hotel we found that the radiator in the bathroom was turned on and despite the efforts of the staff could not be turned off. It was 25 degrees outside. We were given a four poster bed even though we were two women. The WiFi didn't work in the room. The room faced the main road with no nets or blinds. There was nowhere near a mirror to dry hair. There was no shower only an ancient bath with a telephone type of arrangement. The walk into town was along a main road with endless traffic. The one saving grace was the breakfast and even then the coffee was weak. It was very poor value for money as it was very expensive for what was on offer. We will not be back.

Marmadukes Town... H, Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback of your stay at Marmadukes Town House Hotel. I am saddened reading your feedback Marilyn. I am sorry that you found our beautiful building old and tired. Upon looking into your reservation I can see that you was given a free of charge upgrade into one of our best four poster rooms, you had booked one of our Petite Executive Rooms which are the smallest of our double rooms. We did contact you at the time of booking and stated we do not have any twin rooms on site, this was reiterated to you at the time of check in which you agreed this was fine. As soon as the issue regarding the radiator was reported this was rectified within the hour and we have no further issues was reported to the team. We did log the WIFI issue with the provider this has since been resolved. I am sorry to hear that you will not be returning. Kind Regards, Emily Ullathorne

Just got back from a one night stay at the Marmaduke Hotel, and from beginning to end it was an absolute pleasure! Our room was spacious and decorated well, all furniture within keeping of the era. Our bed was so comfy, had a lovely nights sleep! We also had a bath in our en-suite which was lovely! Breakfast was delicious and served promptly. All the staff were friendly, courteous and knowledgeable, felt sad to leave, not only a beautiful hotel but a stunning city! Will definitely return and recommend ??

"Magnificent Marmadukes"

10/08/2018

Stayed for just one night on one of the four poster rooms. Check in was friendly and efficient. Loved the use of antique and period furniture in the room. Room was clean and well appointed but we would have liked a shower rather than just a bath. A little impractical and the bathroom was big enough for both. Slept well and the room was quiet despite all the windows being open on a warm night. Being on a side street really makes a difference. Breakfast was excellent, hot and good quality ingredients. The best thing about it though was the lovely service from the waitress who was attentive and just really good at her job. Nice ten minute stroll in to the middle of the action of York. We preferred being ever so slightly out of the centre as it made for a peaceful and relaxing stay. Checkout friendly, staff were very warm. The cleaner chased after us to bring me a pair of trousers I'd left in the wardrobe. The only downsides were the lack of shower and parking was an additional £7 a night. I'd recommend this hotel and we'll definately return.

"Great hotel and quiet location"

09/08/2018

Lovely hotel in a quiet area, not to far from the city centre, staff all very friendly and helpful especially the man on reception that gave us his fan as our room was so hot, our room (on top floor of main building) was very nice only niggles were bed very noisy creaky so if you toss and turn could be an issue and no were to put anything in shower ie soap, shampoo which could easily be sorted. Breakfast was excellent and lovely staff and lovely garden and loved the local grey and ginger cats lol. This hotel has lots of character beautiful rooms.

We stayed one night, We were warmly greeted, our room was nice, priced accordingly There is no real shower, a shower unit on the bath, but no curtain, so we both had to have baths We had dinner in the restaurant and it was very good and we would recommend.

"Lovely place to stay"

The staff are really helpful and friendly. The room was lovely, nice size and the bed really comfy. Breakfast was tasty and served in a nice dining room. There is a lovely garden to relax in. It is well placed to reach the city centre and attractions.

03/08/2018

Stayed at the Marmaduke for a few days break with several family members to celebrate our anniversary. It was a last minute booking and they were very accommodating as we required 4 rooms. We had a warm welcome from the very friendly and efficient staff as we were shown to our rooms. Rooms were lovely with 4 poster beds and spotlessly clean, can honestly say its the cleanest hotel room we have ever stayed in. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the service was great whether it be breakfast or bar service, nothing was too much trouble. We would definitely recommend this hotel as its a perfect location if you want a little peace and quiet but to be within walking distance of the walls. We will be back.

Marmadukes Town... H, Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for reviewing you recent stay here at Marmadukes Town House Hotel. Our four poster rooms are truly beautiful they do differ slightly but all have free standing cast iron roll top baths and a four poster or half tester canopy bed. 509 is the only four poster with views of York Minister. All of our team very extremely hard to ensure that all of our guests enjoy every aspect of their stay with us. Our housekeeping team will appreciate your kind comments! We are a short walk away from all of York's attractions but set back down a quiet street. I am delighted that you all enjoyed your stay with us and could relax. We hope to see you again in the future. Kind Regards, Emily Ullathorne

"Lovely Victorian Hotel"

4
24/07/2018

We were in room 501. From the point we checked in, the customer service was brilliant. Friendly and very informative. A very nice lady talked us through the map giving us indicators towards what might be preferable to visit as we only had two days. Location was absolutely brilliant! 10min walk to the York City Walls and a pleasant walk. At one point, we even walked through the NHS gardens to get to a Resturant (again 10min max) The room is elegantly furnished. They have tried to maintain the theme and character of the overall Victorian feel. Attached are some photos. The bathroom had a roll-top bath tub. With a hand held shower. I personally find this impractical. We had a long journey in and I would have personally liked to have a quick shower before ducking out for dinner. You could use the hand held shower but whoa... the whole bathroom gets all messy with water. Perhaps request for a room with a shower if this is not your preference. Sleeping comfort: okay... so the mattress is a very personal thing. I was there for only two nights and my lower back had just about survived it. The mattress was very soft and springy. The whole mattress moves if either you or your partner shifts even slightly.... so not a very comfortable sleep. But again, we just rolled with it as we were there for a short time. Again, I strongly recommend you discuss your preferences with the hotel; they are very accommodating and friendly. Breakfast; I was pleasantly surprised they offered a vegan breakfast (vegan sausage, stir-fry tofu, tomato, two mushrooms, toast or ciabatta) The tofu was very bland and boring. But the sausage and mushrooms etc helped with that :) Breakfast is an additional £10 and my partner had the full breakfast which he liked. The first night was ok... slept through despite mattress issues. But the second (and last night) was very disturbing. The walls are very thin. I could actually hear the footsteps from the room above. It didn't help that someone came in way past midnight and slamming doors woke us up. The whole night was disturbing.... I think extra guests had checked in. And by 6am doors were opening and banged shut... utterly disturbing. If I was to stay more nights I would have requested a move. But I suppose the building is old and there is only so much the hotel can control, with regards to walls and sounds..? Overall, my 4 stars are mostly for the friendly service, the elegant room touch and the location. Comfort of the room and bathroom is purely down to a personal taste.

Thank you for taking the time and leaving your lovely and informative review for Marmadukes Town House Hotel. Thank you for mentioning our friendly team, whom are always happy to help and offer advice. Our Roll-Top Baths are fabulous to have a great soak in, however if you do prefer a shower we would be more than happy to allocate you the bedrooms which do have a shower. We are pleased you appreciated our location, with us being situated a steady 10-minute walk away from the city walls and still enjoy the peaceful tranquillity of St Peters Grove and not have to listen to all of the hustle and bustle. Yes, we would happily accommodate different mattress preferences, and this is something we do have a varied type of to offer. Our breakfast selection does hopefully have something on for everyone and we have tried to offer a varied offering to all dietary requirements. I feel you have offered a very descriptive and fair view on Marmadukes and we really appreciate this, you mention what we can help and assist with and what we do need guests to be appreciative of. We would love to have you return back to us and it has been a pleasure having you stay. Best Wishes Lucy & Team

"Weekend break "

23/07/2018

Stayed at this hotel for 2nights. On arrival we were warmly great by the friendly front desk staff. Who informed that our room was not quite ready and ask if we would like a drink while we waited we were told that we go either have our drink in the lovely lounge area or we could go outside into the walked garden area. We opted to go outside seeing that the weather was nice where we found a lovely well maintained and relaxing garden area for us to enjoy our drinks. We were shown to our room which was in the annexe building up in the loft room 510 .we found the room was lovely decorated and was very suitable for our stay. We found that breakfast was of very good standard and anything requested was not a problem to the staff. We found all staff that we encounter were very polite. The only downside if any was the lack of WiFi in the bedroom but as we were only in the room for a couple of hours a day we did really use it anyhow.if the WiFi was of good connection then this review would of been a 5. We will be returning to this hotel in the future and also recommending it to our friends and family

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time and leaving your lovely review. We greatly appreciate you mentioning our friendly team, whom will help as much as they possibly are able. We have recently attempted to make the garden as suitable and inviting to our guests as possible and this has seemed to be well received, so we are thrilled to read your kind comments regarding our maintained garden. We are really pleased that your bedroom was tastefully decorated and suitable for your stay with us. We are pleased that you enjoyed your freshly cooked breakfast, yes we will happily accommodate any request if we are able. We are sorry that our Wi-Fi is so intermittent and due to recent feedback we are trying to find a solution that helps improve this. Thank you for this review and that we will have the honour of you returning, it will be wonderful to see you again. Best Wishes Lucy & Team.

Stayed here in the loft suite. It was spacious and clean. The sauna was good and large enough for probably 4 people. Breakfast was tasty aswell. The bed was comfy and staff helpful and pleasant. There were quite a few cracks in walls though which need tending to. Location is great, 15 mins walk into York. Would stay again.

We are very lucky with our location, a short stroll away from all of York's attractions but set back down a quiet street. Our Loft Suite is a gorgeous room with the free standing roll top bath, double shower and barrel sauna. The perfect room for a relaxing break. We have got a maintenance program in place and our Loft Suite is scheduled for this completing within the next couple of weeks. I am pleased that you enjoyed our delicious breakfast. We hope to see you again in the future and see our contentious maintenance program. Kindest Regards, Emily Ullathorne

18/07/2018

Only one night this time, but the welcome and service reached the usual highest standard. Many thanks to Lucy and her team for reminding me why Marmaduke's is the go-to accommodation in York. Following a long journey down from the Scottish Highlands, this hotel provides the perfect mix of comfort and location (close enough to the town centre, yet situated in a quiet street off the main road). The bedrooms in the main building and in the annex are spacious and very comfortable. The reception staff never fail to give the impression that they are really pleased to see you, and to ensure that your stay is enjoyable.

We stayed for one night and couldn't fault the hotel. When we checked in we asked about local restaurants and the reception staff rang up and booked us a table at Delrio's. They were so helpful. "Elegant furnishing but......"

13/07/2018

Recently spent 3 nights in a loft room (518). The hotel looked good but stay was totally spoiled by very creaky floorboards in bedroom. A nighttime toilet visit ensured partner was woken. If it was a Premier Inn I would be looking for a refund under the good night guarantee. Breakfast was excellent but spoiled by poor quality fruit juice. Staff were very helpful

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your recent review. I am so sorry to read that you didn't have a great nights sleep, due to the floor boards, the reason we do have these is solely due to our cleaning standards, as you probably know carpet attracts dirt, grease and germs to which majority of hotels and B&B's do not deep clean or use steam to ensure that these germs are removed. I feel at the very least I can assure guests that our flooring is cleaned to a high standard. We do have two carpeted bedrooms which do receive the above treatment in our suites which you may prefer on your next visit. Thank you for mentioning our friendly team and we hope to see you return back to in the near future. Kindest Regards Lucy Neville

"Beautiful Hotel"

12/07/2018

Stayed here for one night, within easy walking distance of York, we parked our car at hotel for £7 a night, streets nearby are all restricted. Upon arrival we got an upgraded room, we opened the door to a beautifully decorated room with a four poster bed and a roll top bath in the bathroom. Our room was on the front of the hotel didn't have any issues with noise through the night. Had a really good nights sleep. We didn't eat breakfast or use the room service so cannot comment on these. I would definitely stay here again

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your lovely 5 star review! We are really grateful for mentioning our perfect location, being easy walking distance to the city. We obviously can spot a good customer to upgrade after a review like, so great choice by us. We are situated in a quite area of York, where you can get a better nights sleep than most areas. We would love to welcome you back very soon. Kindest Regards Lucy Neville

"Terrible Service and bad management"

1
11/07/2018

I stayed at the hotel whilst on business. I arrived after 4 hours travelling in the car and whilst checking in asked about the restaurant location etc. I was told that there was only a 4 or 8 course tasting menu available. As this was not suitable I asked about room service- it wasn't available at all that evening ?? No explanation but was offered a map to walk 10 minutes into town or to able to order a takeaway to my room ! The hotel car park was a mass of customers exiting and looking for alternative eating places. Also an American guest was ringing for a takeaway. I questioned the duty manager Laura who was extremely condescending when I explained that I would have liked an a la carte menu or at least the room service option being told that “the tasting menu isn't for everyone “.It was like listening to a recorded message and she displayed no customer service skills whatsoever. The duty manager eventually asked if I would like her to beg the kitchen to make a pizza off the room service menu. I declined and replied that it would hardly be a relaxed experience after insisting it wasn't an option at all. What a shame that a lovely hotel with beautiful rooms is being let down so badly by inexperience and rudeness in the management team. I normally stay at the Hotel Du Vin where the service is always outstanding.

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
How terribly upsetting to walk into this review you have left for Marmadukes Town House Hotel. Our website does clearly state that our restaurant only offers a Four Course and a Seven Course Tasting Menu. I believe when our team was trying to explain this to yourself at length, it was the pricing that wasn't unsuitable, however the restaurant did offer a Four Course at a reduced offering on this particular evening at £35.00. I have reviewed our CCTV and failed to view the mass exit for alternative food offerings. I strongly suggest that you review hotel websites prior to your future bookings. This is the first time I have ever heard anybody say anything negative about Laura, especially in a condescending manor, Laura would go up and above of what is required to help guests. It is standard practice in any hotel to be offered a map of the local area, especially given that what we are offering in term of food was not to your liking. Quite frankly I am perplexed at your comments, and I will take this review as you have not had the best of days and we have suffered the consequences for this. If you had of provided us with any form of constructive feedback or useful information to enhance guests' experiences moving forward; I would have thanked you sincerely. However sadly I cannot provide this gratitude to yourself. Kind Regards Lucy Neville

"Enjoyable Stay"

11/07/2018

Stayed here for two nights recently. Hotel is a short walk from the Minster. Hotel itself is very nice, with staff being particularly pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was spot on. Only slight minus was that our room in the annexe building wasn't great for wi-fi reception. Apart from that, I'd have no hesitation in returning.

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time and leaving your lovely review from your recent two night stay. We are a perfect location, being only a ten minute walk to the city walls. Thank you for your kind comments of our team being pleasant and helpful. Our freshly cooked breakfast is just what you need to start your day of excitement. Yes I have noted a few comments regarding our Wi-Fi and currently attempting to find a solution suitable for our old beautiful building, however we do expect to see improvements with this in the very near future. However we are thrilled you have no hesitation in returning and we will look forward to seeing you again soon. Kindest Regards Lucy Neville

10/07/2018

Very friendly gentleman on the front desk gave us a warm welcome, and it set the tone for our stay. Really nice townhouse hotel, our room (executive double) was clean and beautifully decorated. There wasn't a shower, only a bath with a shower head, although we prefer showers it wasn't really an issue. The breakfast was very good, and the location of the hotel itself was pretty good and at a reasonable price. We'd definitely stay again!

The hotel itself was really nice and the staff were excellent. The breakfast on the other hand was very poor, in need of higher quality ingredients. Unable to have hot bath in morning as the cylinders were empty due to demand, but I can forgive that ??

"Visit to York"

28/06/2018

Location is good, just a leisurely 10-15 minutes walk into the centre of York. Set down a side street off the main road it is quiet and relaxing. The staff are friendly and helpful. The general decor of the hotel and the room we had is old fashioned, however this is in keeping with the building. The room was clean and tidy with facilities to make tea and coffee. The bathroom was spacious with a bath/ shower, most welcome after a busy day. Breakfast is fine with plenty of choice for both eat eaters and vegetarians and the staff are attentive. Only negatives is the cost of parking, £7 per night, which I feel is expensive. Overall I would recommend staying here unless you want to be in the heart of York.

Excellent place to stay being only a short walk from the centre of York. Our room was lovely and clean and beautifully decorated and the staff extremely pleasant and helpful. Definitely somewhere for us to stay again! Can definitely recommend staying here.

Thank you for taking the time out and leaving us your amazing 5 stars. We are a perfect location; being only a 10 minute walk to the city walls but in a tranquil Grove to enjoy a peaceful nights sleep. Thank you for mentioning our friendly team here and we are thrilled you will be returning. Best Wishes Lucy Neville

The room was lovely. Although no Wi Fi signal as stated. Bath lovely and deep but no shower. Breakfasts good and staff very helpful. They miss out on the evening meals to hotel guests - whilst there is a fine dining experience it's not something we would choose to do every night. At least we ventured out every night and found some fab restaurants

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your lovely review. All our Four Poster rooms do only have the roll top baths, although lovely and deep if any guests do require a shower please let us know ASAP as we will where possible try to accommodate this. We do now run our room service menu 24/7 which gives guest the alternative to our fantastic tasting menu should this not be for you. I am pleased you did manage to find some fab restaurants whilst here. We hope you return again in the future. Kind Regards Adrian

Lovely clean hotel , there's nothing bad to say spotless rooms , breakfast spot on Parking couldn't fault I added it to my booking and they let us park before our room was ready which was good , short walk to the city nice quite area staff were helpful too would definitely recommend

Thank you for you brilliant review. All our rooms are serviced daily to our own very high standards and i am happy couldn't fault the cleanliness. We do have limited parking available however guests are more than welcome to arrive earlier than check in time to park up and explore our fantastic city whilst rooms are been serviced. Thank you for mentioning the great team here. We hope you come back very soon. Kind Regards Adrian

This is the second time weve stayed at this hotel and again it was perfect. The hotel is approx 10 minutes from the centre of town on a quite street. Rooms are great and the breakfast is top quality. The price we paid for BB and parking was very reasonable and a lot cheaper than other hotels. Most of all the staff are very helpful and freindly, we would have no problem staying at this hotel again and we will. Cheers and thanks again to Marmadukes

An attractive hotel with helpful and friendly staff. Lovely public rooms. Bedroom a little small but very clean. Hot water is really really hot. Small garden at the rear. Located within easy walking distance to city centre. Would certainly visit again.

Lovely hotel in a quiet side street but a short walk in to York. Clean lovely room. Friendly and helpful staff. We stayed for one night, on a Sunday, so didn't have an evening meal but breakfast was lovely. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to friends. The only thing that irritates me is paying to park on hotel grounds but this is not unique to this hotel as it seems to be happening with most hotels (off street parking seems to be for permit holders only).

Marmadukes Town... H, Duty Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking to time to leave such as brilliant 5 star review. We are indeed very lucky to be in such an idyllic peaceful setting but yet only a stones throw from the hustle and bustle of York city centre. Thank you for also mentioning our lovely team and our delicious Yorkshire breakfasts. We hope to see you again soon, Kind regards, Laura

I stayed at this hotel for two nights whilst in York for a work conference - the hotel is conveniently situated for the town centre. The staff were very efficient but also friendly, approachable and incredibly helpful. The rooms were nicely decorated, clean and well serviced. The breakfast menu was comprehensive, food arrrived promptly and was tasty! I enjoyed my stay and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

Staff were helpful, friendly and polite; breakfast was delicious; the room and hotel itself was clean, comfortable and full of character; the location was ideal; the only negative...the Wi-Fi signal could have been stronger! Overall, an amazing stay, really made our 10th anniversary trip a bit more special and we hope to visit again one day.

10/06/2018

Staff were extremely welcoming and helpful. Location excellent as 15 minute walk to centre of York. Bed was so comfortable and breakfast ( plus waiting staff) very good. Only grievances were lack of shower , cold water kept shutting off ( maybe pressure on top floor)which left us with scalding hot water so bath out of the question. Mentioned to reception but fell on deaf ears. Also excessive parking charge of £7 daily to park in hotels small carpark with CCTV or with an option to park on street , as we don't park on street t home there was no choice

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your good review. I am pleased to read our team were welcoming and helpful. Thank you for mentioning our lovely cooked to order breakfast. I am sorry you encountered issues with the cold water whilst you were with us, this is an unusual problem however it has now been rectified. Our on site parking is limited so we do charge an additional £7 per night which compared with other hotels in York is considered cheap. As you mentioned guests do have the option of free parking on the street just outside the hotel. Kind Regards Adrian

07/06/2018

We booked this with high expectations. The staff were helpful and friendly before and during our visit. It is in a lovely position and a short walk into town. Our room was lovely, if a little cramped and the bathroom was tiny. The bed was noisy when you moved about and quite soft. Their website does say that you will receive a voucher to spend in the restaurant, which we were not offered. The breakfast was a let down. It came very quickly which shows they have it precooked ready. The bacon and eggs are lovely but let down by the sausage and mushroom. The coffee was not the nicest I had drunk. Unfortunately I would not return

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. The Small Executive you booked is pretty much that - Small. Although these rooms are small they are perfectly adequate for 2 guests sharing who do not wish to spend all their time in the room. All our breakfasts are freshly prepared and cooked on site on the day. Nothing is precooked. We received so much great feedback from guests regarding this coffee when we trialled it that we have now made this our main supplier. Obviously we all have different tastes so there will be the odd 1 or 2 that may not like it. I am sorry to read that you will not return. Kind Regards Adrian

I stayed here with my partner last week on our first visit to York and it certainly won't be our last to York or this hotel. The hotel was lovely and the staff were really friendly. Stayed here with a group of friends and our daughters to celebrate the renewal of our wedding vows at York Registry Office. We opted for the four poster bedroom and weren't disappointed. We were well looked after, the rooms were lovely and staff friendly. We had our reception at the Park Restaurant (in the hotel) and Adam (the chef) and Mary looked after us royally. Could not fault our stay or the food. Well done everyone and a very big thank you.

"Aspects of service was disappointing"

31/05/2018

During our 3 night stay, we were given 2 different rooms. Both were fairly small and the beds were okay but not great. We informed the hotel personnel several times that the wifi did not work in the room (we had to go in the hall or the central rooms in the other bldg). When we travel, we enjoy keeping in touch with family and friends, in the comfort of our room (which we pay for). Nothing was done to make our stay more comfortable. The breakfast was very good and the service in the morning, was excellent.

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your recent review and we are sorry that your Wi-Fi was not up to the normal standard, we hope this is rectified for your next visit. Our Petite Executive Bedrooms are petite and perfect for a short stay, we are sorry that you didn't find this suitable for your particular visit. We are really pleased that you enjoyed your freshly cooked breakfast with us. We hope the Wifi and style on bedroom on this stay does not deter you from staying with us again. Perhaps on your next visit a Deluxe in our main building will reduce these issues, please feel free to request. Kindest Regards Lucy Neville

Great reception staff and amazing rooms. Better still all credit to the cleaning staff as that room was the cleanest we have had the benefit of staying in. The floors actually squeeked when we walked on them they were that clean. There wasn't even a speck of dust anywhere! The cleaning staff you have are outstanding and need commending. We have stayed in many hotels around the world and this one will remain in our minds as beautiful as well as spotless. Well done to not just the very polite and well mannered reception but to th outstanding cleaning staff amazing job. The hotel is excellent and exactly what you want beauty and comfort. The welcome was excellent. Room was sparkling, as was the bathroom, which was spacious. Breakfast was really good. The hotel was well situated. Only downside was the lack of a lift, but our baggage was carried up for us.

When we were shown to our room we noticed there was a fairly loud electrical 'hum'! Not sure where it was coming from but we thought we wouldn't get any sleep with that going on so we asked if there was another room available. Give them their due, they showed us several rooms and we eventually picked a quiet one (no 'hum'!) at the side of the hotel. It didn't have a shower (just a shower head attached to the bath taps) so it made hair washing a little awkward but the bathroom was very nice otherwise. The bedroom had large dark furniture in it and I did find the whole thing slightly spooky (but maybe that's just me!) but it was clean and tidy. Breakfast was fine, not as much choice as in other places we've stayed (and my fried egg was charred to a crisp!) but we had more than enough to eat. This hotel is situated in an excellent spot for visiting York. It's only a 10 minute walk in, which is fantastic, and has on-site parking, which is an absolute boon in York!

"Not Suitable for Business"

08/05/2018

My bedroom was clean and had a comfortable 4 poster bed and period furniture with a roll-top bath in the en-suit. Unfortunately other features of the hotel during my 2 week stay disappointed me. The bedroom had a broken fan in the toilet, a lamp that did not work and other bulbs on the chandelier that had failed. The Wi-Fi in my room was non-existent. The only Wi-Fi I could use was in the main reception rooms. The breakfast was frugal (1/2 a mushroom, tiny eggs and a single teabag per pot) and luke warm. The on-site parking is best avoided. The parking is two deep requiring the outer car to submit their car keys to reception so that the staff can move the car if required. Due to the lack of space a collision is likely. My colleague had his brand-new car damaged by another guest. The guest in question left their details with the hotel staff who refused to pass it on to my colleague until the police intervened. Generally I would say that this hotel is suitable for a more senior tourist with a small appetite who arrives on foot.

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for mentioning our superb cleaning standards and that you appreciated our Four Poster bedrooms. I have double checked the bedroom in which you stayed to find the bathroom extractor in full working order, we are sorry that you struggled during your stay. If you had of expressed to our front of house team serving you this particular morning they would have been more than happy in assisting, you order extra tea or serving a larger breakfast. However as per your colleagues TripAdvisor review you departed so early we was unable to cater for you. I am not sure which comment is more accurate. All but 2 of the staff were unhelpful. The manager had no interest in sorting business needs and employs non trained personnel at reception. There is no risk assessment available for the reception staff parking residents cars, no early breakfast availability and no internet in the annex. Room key cards had to b reprogrammed on a daily basis and dealing with issues is a serious problem for the manager and her staff. Seriously over priced for the what you get.

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review

We stayed in the Loft suite and would recommend. The hotel is easy to book, easy to find and easy to park at securely (£7 for the day is highly competitive in York and most welcome!). The hotel is a 10 minute easy walk into town with no taxi necessary for most people we would imagine, although if need be, the hotel make it easy to find various taxi services. Check in was smooth and we were given a clear map to follow to reach the city centre. The hotel is nicely maintained to the public rooms and outside, the lounge is very cosy and a well stocked bar serves residents until late. The dining room is light and contemporary and was very pleasant to sit in for breakfast. The loft suite is (as you'd imagine) on the very top floor, no obvious lift (so be aware when booking), we were shown to our room and first impressions are very impressive indeed!! It has a sitting room with comfy sofas, desk, two TVs, DVD player, huge bathroom with double rainfall shower, roll top bath, sauna, separate toilet, bedroom with king size bed, and dressing room. Also provided are: tea / coffee, biscuits, toiletries, towels, hairdryer, iron and ironing board and trouser press. We slept like logs and found the bed firm but extremely comfortable with quality pillows and bedding - the room was very very quiet at night. Being very candid we paid the lower rate possible for this room when booking direct with the hotel and wouldn't have liked to pay more, this was because: the room does not have a view as it is all velux roof windows (blinds do not shut fully at the top letting in the morning light easily), the tap water provided in the room comes in a glass bottle but around the neck of this bottle is black mould when you check! The bathroom tap is broken and loose in the toilet, and some of the grout quite dirty / old now. There are watermarks to the sideboard in the lounge. No fridge in the room, no dressing gown or slippers provided, no hotel information folder that we could find. Certainly all little things, but if the hotel did these things it is for us what would make it worth paying the top rate advertised. However, the room was otherwise spotless. Breakfast was average, cheap sausage, one very small field mushroom per person, no croissants but very nice danish pasties, yoghurt and fruit, cereals and toast. If you've booked you should look forward to it, if you haven't we would definitely recommend at the right price.

Booked a double deluxe room as had read other reviews about rooms being small. The hotel is in a great location about half mile from the city wall and stop 1 on the hop on/off tour bus. I had pre-booked a parking space. On arrival at the hotel we were asked to pay up front for our 3 night stay before even seeing the room! On the upside the room was pleasant and roomy enough with a good sized bathroom. On the downside no net curtains on the windows meant the main curtains had to be closed when changing as the room was overlooked by other windows/buildings. The hairdryer in the room wasn't working (or so I thought) I rang down to reception and a replacement was brought up within minutes however that didn't work either (what are the chances of two hairdryers not working?). It turns out the electric points were not working (these are the points nearest the dressing table mirror). The nearest working point was the one for the kettle but that's not near a mirror so had to dry and style my hair in the middle of the room without the mirror. The bathroom mirror is so high I couldn't see in that at all. My husband is nearly 6ft tall so he could see in it to shave. The shower is very hit and miss and alternated between scalding and freezing. The bed was very soft and high and fell away at the edges. Bar prices for soft drinks are astronomical so much so that the young man serving stated he was embarrassed to ask for £2.50 for half a glass of lemonade from a bar that on Sunday night had no ice or lemon slices. Breakfast is good and cooked to order. Reception staff were young and whilst mostly polite, appeared inexperienced particularly when things go wrong. When we reported that our room had been left open by the cleaning staff the receptionist absolved herself of responsibility by stating she had reported it to maintenance (?). It happened again the following day. We also had to have the door key reprogrammed to open the door because the key did not work on returning to our room each day. Some basic maintenance and some consideration for shorter customers who need to use a mirror would be probably be appreciated by future customers.

Stayed in smallest single room. Clean but very small. Extremely small toilet/shower room. Ok for short stay. Convenient for city centre. I was there for a match at Bootham Crescent. Extremely convenient for that.

Thank you for your good review. Our Single rooms are prefect for those solo travellers looking for a small break. We are located no more than a 5 minute walk from Bootham Crescent. We do hope you return soon. Kind Regards Adrian

Me and my partner booked this as a last minute deal and we were not disappointed. The rooms and hotel were lovely, everything was clean and well presented. All the hotel staff were polite, informative and helpful. Parking was provided at £7 a day and we could park there on the day we were checking out for an additional £7 which meant we didn't have to move the car to a more expensive car park in town. The bed was slightly too hard for us but it is all down to personal preference and for £56 for a night you can't grumble. We would definitely Visit again however maybe opt for a four poster room next time.

Thank you for your lovely review. I am pleased to read you were not disappointed with your stay with us. Thank you for mentioning the lovely team here at Marmadukes, they truly are fantastic. People at the hotel were lovely. Did not eat there a night. It was an old hotel, with a bit of shabby elegance. I think we might have been unlucky with the room as the bed was very uncomfortable and we were moved as there was a lot of noise from fans below us that started at 6.30 am. The staff were very good about moving us.

I am pleased that we was able to move you into an alternative room without any issues, I am sorry that you encountered noise problems so early in the morning. Mattress are a very personal item and very hard to provide a mattress to every bodies preference. We are sorry that this was not to your liking. Kind Regards, Emily Ullathorne

nice overall and ideally located - does however need a revamp in certain areas ( yellowing of bath is very offputting ) and more care paid to the rooms - light bulbs missing , dusty cupboards , broken furniture .

Had high expectations of this place and have fancied trying it for a while now but in all honesty, we were somewhat disappointed. Upon arrival whilst waiting for our room to be ready we decided to have a wine in the hotel bar, we asked for the Malbec and the server asked if I would prefer the house wine. I assumed she was offering this because she couldn't find the Malbec so I agreed for her convenience and then was shocked to find out it was actually a more expensive wine at £6 for a small glass. The price itself isn't a problem and the house red was very nice but I just felt a little like we had been up sold which doesn't make a great first impression. Furthermore our wine was served in mismatched glasses, not a huge deal admittedly but it's a lack of attention to detail which is disappointing. We got to our room which was pleasant enough and full of lovely looking furniture, dumped our bags and headed out. When we returned to the room after our night out we discovered how uncomfortable the bed was. The bed was incredibly creaky and the mattress was far too small and left around 5 inches of stained bed (with what looked like specks of blood - photograph attached) exposed at either side. The mattress protector was scruffy and full of holes. If we had been staying for a second night we would have asked to be moved. The bathroom was very nice and the provided toiletries and huge bath towels are lovely. However there was only a bath and an over bath shower, not a problem for us but something to be aware of. Breakfast was okay, staff in the breakfast room very pleasant although forgot to come over and ask us if everything was okay so we had to wait a while to get their attention as my bacon was undercooked (again not a problem for some, personal preference - although the menu does state that the bacon will be served crispy). Nice coffee and juice. The whole hotel seemed to us to be massively overheated, again just personal preference. Car parking tight but we felt it was very reasonable at £7 a night. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of our stay was that, upon checkout, the receptionist failed to enquire how our stay had been or ask if everything had been okay. Again this lack of attention to detail is just disappointing. I feel that all things considered, my three star rating is more than fair and probably a tad generous. Much better value to be had elsewhere in York.

Thank you for taking the time and reviewing your recent stay here at Marmadukes Town House Hotel. We appreciated all feedback. We are very lucky with our location, such a short walk away from all of York's attractions but set back down a quiet street. I am sorry that you found the bed uncomfortable, mattresses are a very personal item some like them firm some like them soft. It is always difficult to find a mattress to suite every bodies preferences. We are pleased that you liked the decor of your room. Some of our rooms have baths some showers, if you do have a personal preference and inform the team of this we can ensure that you are allocated a room more suited to your preference. I can ensure you that all of our breakfast are cooked to order. Regarding the wine, we had ran our of the Malbec as explained and unfortunately the only red wine which we sell by the glass was our house red the ZeroG. I am sorry that you felt that the was not much attention to detail from the staff, this is not the case as we all work very hard to ensure that all of our guests enjoy every aspect of there stay. All of the team do enquire as to whether our guests have enjoyed their stay. We will investigating the bed in that room. Kind Regards, Emily Ullathorne

We spent two very comfortable nights here. We have nothing but praise for this hotel. All those in reception were delightful and extremely helpful with nothing being too much trouble. Our bedroom was spacious and the bathroom spotlessly clean. Breakfast would cater for all needs and was in the light, airy conservatory. The hotel was only ten minutes walk from the Minster. The hotel has parking which you need to reserve. We also had dinner here on both nights and suffice to say it was 'Michelin' standard and was some of the best food we have eaten in some time. Thoroughly recommend The Marmadukes

We stayed here Saturday night for one night and would certainly stay again and recommend it. The place is very characterful with high ceilings, mosaic floors and period features dotted around. It is also easy to find and only a stones' throw from central York. The reception area is very small but we had a very warm welcome from the young lady behind the counter. She was a lovely girl and very helpful, allowing us access to room early so we could get changed for wedding, offered to carry our bags and also park the car, absolute super star and credit to the hotel. We paid for parking and although car park is very small and cramped the staff will do it all for you, just leave them the keys. I also wouldn't worry about them doing so as the young girl easily manoeuvred our Range Rover in a very tight car park no problem, excellent driver. The room was very nice, lovely bed and very clean. It was also warm and quiet and consequently we slept well. Bathroom had a modern shower so all in room very nice. Breakfast was in a nice little room at the back and catered for Vegans and Vegetarians. My breakfast was lovely, coffee nice and fresh and service solid so again well done. All in a smashing little place and worth a try. Cheers.

Stayed here for just the one night, as I was celebrating my 21st birthday in York. It's a beautiful town house, decorated so tastefully. Staff were lovely and friendly, and the room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel is just a short walk in to the town centre, and had we have visited in summer it looks as though it has gorgeous gardens. Had we have stayed for longer I would have also liked to try the bar as it looked very lovely. Breakfast the next morning was also amazing with lots of choice (see photo) and all round one of the best hotels I have stayed in. Thank you for making my birthday so memorable!

My husband and I we're looking for a hotel not to far away from the Grand theatre and this hotel came up as in walking distance. I checked the reviews on tripadvisor and found they were mixed but mostly good so we decided to book as it was only for one night. After battling to get to York because of the beast from the East had left York under a lot of snow we arrived after quiet a stressful journey. The reception staff were lovely and took us to our room in the annex. To be honest my heart sank when he said the annex because some of the reviews criticised the rooms there but we was very please with our room! It was well presented and the bed was very comfortable. The room was nice and warm bearing in mind the sub zero temperatures outside. My only complaint and its only a small one was the wooden floor in the room was freezing but would have been remedied if I had though to bring slippers. Over all a very pleasant stay.

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your lovely review. I am pleased you did not let some of the unfair reviews of our annex put you off. These rooms are equally as beautiful as the rooms in the main building. We have had some particularly cold weather recently which will definitely have made the floors feel much colder. We do hope you return again very soon. Kind Regards Adrian

08/03/2018

Myself and my wife stayed for 3 nights midweek. We were warmly welcomed by friendly staff and given some excellent advice on the best local attractions and eateries. The hotel is well located only about 1/2 a mile from York's centre. We walked in and out of the city multiple times every day with ease, it's certainly easier than trying to park in the city. The hotel itself is beautiful, decorated with taste and has everything you need. There is a well appointed lounge, bar and restaurant downstairs. The breakfast is excellent, quality ingredients throughout for either cooked or continental (or both if you fancy!). Our room was great, like the rest of the hotel it was tastefully decorated with traditional furniture and had everything we needed. Would highly recommend.

My partner and I along with our son stayed here on the 26th. Upon booking I asked if we could have a travel cot they said yes but for an extra £7.50 so said that we would bring our own but noticed I was still charged for it.(obviously we got refunded) We were a bit surprised to find out that we had to pay an extra £7 for parking but then they allowed us to leave it there on the 27th whilst we went to the shops. Check in was easy and were shown to our room which was nice but then we didn't know our room number when asked for it at breakfast. The room was warm during the evening but went really cold at night, it was snowing but our room only had single glazing so we had condensation and there was a crack on the window. The restaurant was closed so we had to venture out to have something to eat. The bed was too hard for our liking and breakfast was disappointing, saying that it is a AA Rosette. On my breakfast I asked for a poached egg and it came out hard instead of a nice runny egg and we didn't rate the sausages either. Ciaron, on reception was fantastic! He was the one who showed us to our room explained breakfast and even help my partner with the pushchair through the door (the little things) We are undecided whether or not to come back to Marmadukes as it was ciaron that really made our stay.

"Poky Room"

27/02/2018

At the check in we were asked to pay for car parking and breakfast. We were misled into thinking both were included in the deal when we booked. The room itself was in an annexe and was ridiculously small...it had been described as a double room, a single bed would not have given much more room. There was no chair in the room (indeed, no room for one and a tiny wardrobe behind the door, so small we had to hang clothes on its door which in turn impeded the room door function. The underfloor heating was ok but the towel radiator was lethally hot; a sign did warn of this but if it is so dangerous do somehting about it! On checking out we were asked if everything "was fine" and when we poined all this out we were told we should have told staff when we checked in and they could have done something. We won't be going back.

my wife and I stayed here for 3 nights and we can say the position of the hotel is excellent for the city centre, within walking distance. The room was lovely with a very comfortable bed and the staff were outstanding. nothing being too much trouble. The only thing that puzzled us was why a hotel which is part of Great Western and has a car park on site would charge £7 per night to park? That being said, we will certainly be back to stay and re explore York. Staff were all top class but the reception staff should be rightly proud and were an excellent first face of the hotel-impressive. Thank you

We have just returned home after spending two nights at Marmadukes. The hotel is in a lovely quiet location and the hotel itself was just as quiet. The hotel was clean and our room which was on the top floor in the annexe was warm and comfortable and although not huge was perfect for what we wanted and had plenty of storage. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was lovely, it was served very quickly and the scrambled egg was delicious. The walk to the centre only takes about 10 minutes and there are plenty of shops, places to eat and lovely little pubs as well as the Minster, museums etc., We have loved our first visit to York and when we return we will definitely be staying at Marmadukes Hotel.

From the outside it in no way prepares you for inside it was fantastic the staff amazingly attentive nothing was to much trouble. "Disappointing for the price"

13/02/2018

When first arriving, this Hotel gives a great impression. It's in a grand old townhouse in a quiet street. It feels warm, and comfortable, with a very friendly welcome. The location is pretty fab, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but only a short walk to the Minster. The best aspect of this Hotel was the staff and service; always friendly, helpful and attentive. They were excellent. But..... Although clean, we found our suite a little shabby; broken blinds let the light in and woke us early. Some lights didn't work. The TV remotes were very grimey. It all needed a little TLC. When we arrived after a long journey, the hot water ran out after a couple of minutes and we were left with a cold shower. The service door was propped open, so every time we went up and down to our room there was a lovely view of the scruffy staff areas with music blaring. And the breakfast was shocking. Cheap sliced bread, butter in foil portions like the local cafe, and despite waiting 40 minutes from ordering, the hot breakfast was dry and overcooked. Ingredients were tasteless and of poor quality. Not a good advert for their posh restaurant!! Overall these negatives were not a big deal perhaps. But the cost of the room was really quite high, and standards really should be better for the prices charged.

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. Firstly i am pleased that the team here were helpful, friendly and attentive throughout your stay. I have been up to our Loft Suite and have noticed a few of the blinds were simply backwards preventing them from closing properly. Unfortunately we haven't quite got the technology to make light bulbs last forever so we do tend to need to replace these from time to time. The service door was open for a small time as we did have to restock our bar area which involved lifting heavy boxes up our 'Scruffy' staff areas and through this door. I am disappointed you found our breakfast 'shocking', we have our bread delivered daily from our local baker. I do wish you had mentioned this at the time so we could have brought you a fresh one. We hope you had a good journey home. Kind Regards Adrian

A big thanks to the staff at Marmaduke's for making our stay there such a great experience. They were helpful from the word go - including allowing us to park there pre-check-in. The rooms here are quirky and very individual - loved the vintage furniture and the effort that had been made to include everything needed for a comfortable stay. Breakfast was HUGE and delicious. Large room in the anex section. Comfortable double bed. Great location for York city centre and tourist attractions. Breakfast was small but very nice. I am pleased you enjoyed your breakfast, please note that should guests like a little more for breakfast then please do not hesitate to let us know, we would be more than happy to provide extra. Due to the layout of our car park we do double stack some vehicles, which in turn means we do require some guests to leave their keys at reception. Unfortunately on this occasion this particular guest forgot to leave their keys which did create a small delay in us been able to unblock your car. We do hope you decide to return again very soon. Loved this hotel - and I am VERY picky. Friendly welcome. Lovely spacious room on the front of the hotel. I normally prefer contemporary furnishing but the lovely antique furniture against the fresh clean walls and floor really worked. The room could maybe have been a little warmer but it was a big room and a very cold night. Warm enough in bed and a very comfortable night's sleep. Big bathroom with roll top bath. We would have preferred a shower but as this was just a one night stay the lack of it was not too much of an inconvenience and it was a bit of novelty and a treat to have a soak in the bath. The public rooms were very attractive and spotlessly clean. Attractive breakfast room with attentive service and excellent food. Really good coffee. We have sampled many hotels in York recently and this is definitely a keeper. Many thanks.

We booked a room in advance and paid £79 for two b&b. The parking was extra but we parked on the street outside for free overnight, nil incident had to move car by 10am. We had a lovely double room with a 4 poster bed in the annex, which meant that we had to walk a couple of steps outside to the main house for reception and breakfast. This was not a problem at all. The decor was very nice with beatiful furniture tastefully decorated. The venue is about a 10 minute walk into the historical York town centre, again this was no problem at all, unless you have mobility difficulties, in which case a taxi would be an alternative.

Stayed here for a few nights in the Loft Suite.. We were made very welcome from the moment we arrived . All of the staff we encountered were very helpful & polite. The suite was perfect & spacious & the sauna a huge bonus. The highlight of this hotel has to be the park restaurant.. the tasting menu was absolutely stunning & would stay here again just to eat there. Bit of a nightmare getting a space outside but once we did we left the car there as only a 10 minute walk into York. Would we recommend & stay here again ??? Absolutely.....

We treated ourselves to 3 nights in the Loft Suite and had a wonderful stay. It was a spacious and comfortable suite, yet very cosy and snug. Nice firm bed, 2 comfy sofas for lounging and a fantastic bathroom with a generous supply of toiletries (and a separate loo, a great idea because you could spend a loooong time in that bath!). The bath was lovely and deep, there were two powerful rain showers, and the barrel sauna was perfect for warming up after a day in snowy York! The breakfasts were beautifully cooked and there was even a vegan option with scrambled tofu. A choice of free morning paper was a nice touch, too. The only small criticism I have is that there could be quite a lot of noise from adjoining rooms, partly because it's an old building with creaky floorboards. But all in all, perfect for a romantic getaway.

Thank you for your review of your recent stay here at Marmadukes Town House Hotel. Our Loft Suite is one of a kind, it is such a stunning room with the beams, Barrel Sauna, double shower and cast iron free standing roll top bath. It is a great idea regarding the separate toilet so you can soak to your hearts content. I am glad that you enjoyed your vegan sausages and tofu. I am sorry that you encountered issues with the noise level of other guests, we do hope that all of our guests ensure that they keep their noise level to a minimum. We hope to see you again in the future. Kind Regards, Emily Ullathorne

We had booked a two night break at this hotel after reading review's on this site.Well what a fantastic hotel with lots of charm and character. We were welcomed at reception by Kieran (a very professional member of staff)after some initial confusion at check-in regarding our inclusive breakfast rate,(not the hotels fault I might add) we were promptly escorted to a room & wow what a room. the room was in keeping with the Victorian style building and excellently presented. The bathroom was spacious & spotless with an excellent shower over a 'p' shaped bath ,so the best of both worlds if required. The breakfast was a delight and waitresses very attentive to our needs.Upon checkout we were allowed to leave our car at the hotel whilst we had one last walk around this beautiful town.My wife & I Will definately be staying at this hotel again .many thanks to Lucy & her team for making our stay so enjoyable.

All of our rooms do vary in shape, size and style as well as the showering facilities. I am glad that you could enjoy a long soak! We hope you had a fabulous birthday trip away and hopefully you are feeling better. We look forward to welcoming you back! Kind Regards, Emily Ullathorne

A nice, clean, comfortable room at the top of the house. Friendly staff. Fair price for the accommodation offered. There's a fee charged for on-site parking and nine quid for a glass of Merlot is too steep.

My wife and I stayed at Marmadukes for our 25th anniversary a couple of years ago and had a lovely stay, so when we decided to have a last minute winter break in York recently, we thought of Marmadukes again. We had a two night stay with dinner in the Park Restaurant on the second night. The whole experience was excellent and the staff are extremely friendly and polite. The tasting menu with wine was as good as we remembered it from our previous stay. We will definitely return again in the future.

Really loved the evening meal and as good as Michelin stared restaurants plus great service. Rooms nice although quite expensive. Breakfast was not of the same standard, however, that would not stop us staying again as the evening meal really made the stay.

Arrived on time for check in but our rooms were not ready, we were offered coffee or complimentary wine while we waited, we accepted the wine!! We were in single rooms in the annexe, whilst small they had everything you needed. It was a very cold snowy weekend in December, the rooms were lovely and warm. Convenient for the town centre, 10-15 min flat walk. We both had the same issue with the shower as we couldn't get them to work, but a quick call to reception soon resolved the issue. Staff were friendly and polite, they were happy to store our luggage after check out for collection later as our train was not till late afternoon. Breakfast was delicious, would happily stay here again.

The sitting room of the suite should have been warmed prior to our arrival and the kitchenette floor was unpleasantly sticky. In addition we would have loved to have found a bath in the suite for a good soak.

Marmadukes Town... H, General Manager at Marmadukes Town House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your recent review, normally our York Suite is so cosy, how unusual, we will look into why this was chillier than normal. On your next stay, you may appreciate our Loft Suite, which has both a double shower and double ended roll-top bath and just incase you are chilly a sauna in the bathroom to warm up. We hope to see you return back to us. Kindest Regards Lucy Neville

What a fantastic hotel. Our room was beautiful and the location was only about a 10 minute walk to the centre of York. We would recommend Marmadukes to anyone who wished to have a traditional place to stay. The service from the staff was perfect.

"Mixed feelings - great location"

Pluses - got a great deal on Hotels.com. Very pleased with the value. Hands down best thing about the hotel was the location - easy walking distance to the city center, without the city center prices. 10-15 minute easy walk. I did not eat at the hotel, but I heard great things all over town about the restaurant. Room was clean. Very small, which I expected. Super fancy shower head in the bathroom. Towel warmer. Minuses - I am a short person, and I barely fit in the bed. The fancy shower head takes up too much room in the shower and makes it very difficult to maneuver to get clean. There is no shelf in the shower, so you have to keep your toiletries on the floor of the shower, which makes accessing your shampoo, etc without bashing your head on the fancy shower head a feat in body contortion. The towel warmer didn't really work. Single-paned windows meant NO sound proofing for the early morning deliveries - which happened right outside my window. Mixed signals - Wifi dropped me constantly the first two nights, but... on night 3 there was a whole new cable/wifi that worked great. Arrived too early for check in, and the "Piss off, go find something to do on your own" was not specifically stated by the front desk, although heavily implied, but... same staff member delivered my bags to my room instead of making me carry them up. Would I stay there again? I might. It really is a great value for the location. But I'm not in love with this hotel like some of my other reviews.

"Not a 4 star hotel"

Stayed at this hotel in december 2017 .we stayed for 2 night stay .we wanted a walk in shower as my wife cannot get into a bath after having a knee operation .the staff found us a room with a walk in shower but it was on top floor which made it worse as the hotel Had no lift just 3 flights of stairs. The hotel does not cater for eldely residents having to climb flights of stairs to there bedroom. The bedrooms are dated and dull . The breakfast was good and staff excellent but the hotel policy on car parking at £7.00 a day is a insult as you staying at the hotel never being charged for parking at hotel before with the hotel having its own parking.and if you do park they ask you for your car keys in case they need to move it but do not accept any reponsibility if they do any damage to it what a cheek .this hotel is not a 4 star 3 star at most charging you 4/5 star prices..if you want a 4 or 5 star hotel shop around

Stayed here for two nights, upon check in staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Excited to be staying in one of the four post room with a roll top bath however this room sadly did disappoint, we stayed in the annex building adjacent the main hotel on the ground level. Very noisy with other guests as we were at the bottom of the stairs and the main door opening and closing was extremely loud. Plus the light in the Hall was on all night which kept us awake, along with the very noisy bed which at first looked so comfortable. Sadly also the base on the bed below the mattress was stained and looked unsightly. Woke on the first morning to be covered in white fluff. It seemed like a napkin or tissues were washed with the bedding and felt it was unacceptable. And not something we'd of expected. Did let reception know and we had our bedding changed and room cleaned. No real apologies were received which let it down for us. Decor of the room was nice although the the wooden join to the bathroom on the floor was broken and I tripped over it a few times. Annoyingly the iron in the room ruined my outfit for our evening dinner as it poured out with stained water upon placing the iron down. Luckily I'd packed a second choice. Breakfast had an good selection of hot cooked however continental lacked of presentation. And the pastries were poorly cooked. My bacon had foil pieces on it which was a little off putting and the sausage was a little anaemic. Waitresses very efficient and friendly. We found the Hotel was a great location to what we wanted and the evening dinner in the Park Restaurant was truly amazing (left a separate review for that) Paying for parking wasn't an issue as we had previously looked into it. Overall disappointed with our room we did have a nice break away and an exceptional dining experience in the evening. Had we received a sufficient apology upon check out and when letting reception know about the bedding, however felt and left very let down. Would be grateful to be contacted by the Hotel to discuss our stay further. Although rated poor our stay was between poor and average due to the nicer parts of the stay unfortunately for us, we couldn't rate our stay higher.

"Nice quality hotel with character within walking distance of the Minster"

We booked the four poster rooms as standard rooms had all been reserved and were not disappointed ?? The decor was amazing and fitted perfectly with the historic city of York Bathroom had a rolled top bath which was lovely but no proper shower ...just attachment to the bath taps...maybe could do with an upgrade?? Good choice for breakfast although the quality of the full English was very disappointing ....was expecting top end quality / local sourcing etc Walking ????? distance of the Minster. We did come by car and the parking is very limited and has to be pre booked .....thought to charge £7 per day was excessive. I have never been charged to park in hotel's own grounds before ??
