    « Perfectly situated »

When we were shown to our room we noticed there was a fairly loud electrical 'hum'! Not sure where it was coming from but we thought we wouldn't get any sleep with that going on so we asked if there was another room available. Give them their due, they showed us several rooms and we eventually picked a quiet one (no 'hum'!) at the side of the hotel. It didn't have a shower (just a shower head attached to the bath taps) so it made hair washing a little awkward but the bathroom was very nice otherwise. The bedroom had large dark furniture in it and I did find the whole thing slightly spooky (but maybe that's just me!) but it was clean and tidy. Breakfast was fine, not as much choice as in other places we've stayed (and my fried egg was charred to a crisp!) but we had more than enough to eat. This hotel is situated in an excellent spot for visiting York. It's only a 10 minute walk in, which is fantastic, and has on-site parking, which is an absolute boon in York!

    « Lovely Hotel »

Really nice hotel about a ten minute walk to town centre rooms were nice and clean lovely fresh towels. Tea and coffee facilities in rooms too. Bar open too . Breakfast really nice continental or full English available as well as other breakfast items thanks for a great stay

    « Grand Old Marmaduke(s) of York »

Situated a short walking distance from the centre of the city, this hotel has plenty of character and very friendly / helpful staff. The bed was comfortable and the room clean and well presented. A lot of information about possible trips and events within York or further a field were afforded to us.

« The only place in York I'll stay! »

This is the third time myself and my husband have stayed here. Gorgeous rooms, always very clean. Comfy bed and great breakfast!! The staff are always very friendly and the atmosphere is very chilled. Love this place so much!

« Not Suitable for Business »

My bedroom was clean and had a comfortable 4 poster bed and period furniture with a roll-top bath in the en-suit. Unfortunately other features of the hotel during my 2 week stay disappointed me. The bedroom had a broken fan in the toilet, a lamp that did not work and other bulbs on the chandelier that had failed. The Wi-Fi in my room was non-existent. The only Wi-Fi I could use was in the main reception rooms. The breakfast was frugal (1/2 a mushroom, tiny eggs and a single teabag per pot) and luke warm. The on-site parking is best avoided. The parking is two deep requiring the outer car to submit their car keys to reception so that the staff can move the car if required. Due to the lack of space a collision is likely. My colleague had his brand-new car damaged by another guest. The guest in question left their details with the hotel staff who refused to pass it on to my colleague until the police intervened. Generally I would say that this hotel is suitable for a more senior tourist with a small appetite who arrives on foot.

    « City break »

Emily at Reception couldn't have been more helpful when i needed to change part of our booking. Lovely breakfast room and bedroom. Everything you needed, clean and good quality. Cheaper to book direct with hotel. Location brilliant for all York attractions.

« When visiting on Business »

All but 2 of the staff were unhelpful. The manager had no interest in sorting business needs and employs non trained personnel at reception. There is no risk assessment available for the reception staff parking residents cars, no early breakfast availability and no internet in the annex. Room key cards had to b reprogrammed on a daily basis and dealing with issues is a serious problem for the manager and her staff. Seriously over priced for the what you get.

    « Great hotel »

Staff were very helpful and the rooms were very nice. Breakfast was excellent with the best poached eggs I have had. We were able to leave our luggage at hotel on our last day and collect it en route to the station.

    « Nice boutique hotel »

Would be great for a weekend break with my wife but not ideal for a business trip as WiFi was poor and do the restaurant was offering only a 7 course taster menu, sounded great but on a work trip I really just wanted a quick 1 course.

    « 60th treat »

Couple of nights in this excellent boutique hotel. Best thing about it was the superb evening meal, probably the finest in quality I have ever enjoyed at an hotel. If in York do go. Great location for the sights of the city and a short walk from the station.

« My candid review of a nice hotel. »

We stayed in the Loft suite and would recommend. The hotel is easy to book, easy to find and easy to park at securely (£7 for the day is highly competitive in York and most welcome!). The hotel is a 10 minute easy walk into town with no taxi necessary for most people we would imagine, although if need be, the hotel make it easy to find various taxi services. Check in was smooth and we were given a clear map to follow to reach the city centre. The hotel is nicely maintained to the public rooms and outside, the lounge is very cosy and a well stocked bar serves residents until late. The dining room is light and contemporary and was very pleasant to sit in for breakfast. The loft suite is (as you'd imagine) on the very top floor, no obvious lift (so be aware when booking), we were shown to our room and first impressions are very impressive indeed!! It has a sitting room with comfy sofas, desk, two TVs, DVD player, huge bathroom with double rainfall shower, roll top bath, sauna, separate toilet, bedroom with king size bed, and dressing room. Also provided are: tea / coffee, biscuits, toiletries, towels, hairdryer, iron and ironing board and trouser press. We slept like logs and found the bed firm but extremely comfortable with quality pillows and bedding - the room was very very quiet at night. Being very candid we paid the lower rate possible for this room when booking direct with the hotel and wouldn't have liked to pay more, this was because: the room does not have a view as it is all velux roof windows (blinds do not shut fully at the top letting in the morning light easily), the tap water provided in the room comes in a glass bottle but around the neck of this bottle is black mould when you check! The bathroom tap is broken and loose in the toilet, and some of the grout quite dirty / old now. There are watermarks to the sideboard in the lounge. No fridge in the room, no dressing gown or slippers provided, no hotel information folder that we could find. Certainly all little things, but if the hotel did these things it is for us what would make it worth paying the top rate advertised. However, the room was otherwise spotless. Breakfast was average, cheap sausage, one very small field mushroom per person, no croissants but very nice danish pasties, yoghurt and fruit, cereals and toast. If you've booked you should look forward to it, if you haven't we would definitely recommend at the right price.

    « Could do better .... »

Booked a double deluxe room as had read other reviews about rooms being small. The hotel is in a great location about half mile from the city wall and stop 1 on the hop on/off tour bus. I had pre-booked a parking space. On arrival at the hotel we were asked to pay up front for our 3 night stay before even seeing the room! On the upside the room was pleasant and roomy enough with a good sized bathroom. On the downside no net curtains on the windows meant the main curtains had to be closed when changing as the room was overlooked by other windows/buildings. The hairdryer in the room wasn't working (or so I thought) I rang down to reception and a replacement was brought up within minutes however that didn't work either (what are the chances of two hairdryers not working?). It turns out the electric points were not working (these are the points nearest the dressing table mirror). The nearest working point was the one for the kettle but that's not near a mirror so had to dry and style my hair in the middle of the room without the mirror. The bathroom mirror is so high I couldn't see in that at all. My husband is nearly 6ft tall so he could see in it to shave. The shower is very hit and miss and alternated between scalding and freezing. The bed was very soft and high and fell away at the edges. Bar prices for soft drinks are astronomical so much so that the young man serving stated he was embarrassed to ask for £2.50 for half a glass of lemonade from a bar that on Sunday night had no ice or lemon slices. Breakfast is good and cooked to order. Reception staff were young and whilst mostly polite, appeared inexperienced particularly when things go wrong. When we reported that our room had been left open by the cleaning staff the receptionist absolved herself of responsibility by stating she had reported it to maintenance (?). It happened again the following day. We also had to have the door key reprogrammed to open the door because the key did not work on returning to our room each day. Some basic maintenance and some consideration for shorter customers who need to use a mirror would be probably be appreciated by future customers.

    « One night stay »

Stayed in smallest single room. Clean but very small. Extremely small toilet/shower room. Ok for short stay. Convenient for city centre. I was there for a match at Bootham Crescent. Extremely convenient for that.

    « Midweek getaway »

Me and my partner booked this as a last minute deal and we were not disappointed. The rooms and hotel were lovely, everything was clean and well presented. All the hotel staff were polite, informative and helpful. Parking was provided at £7 a day and we could park there on the day we were checking out for an additional £7 which meant we didn't have to move the car to a more expensive car park in town. The bed was slightly too hard for us but it is all down to personal preference and for £56 for a night you can't grumble. We would definitely Visit again however maybe opt for a four poster room next time.

    « great hotel »

Friendly, central, quiet. Super clean room, free newspaper. Wonderful. Have stayed before and would do again. Just 8 minutes walk from the Minster and all the sights. Easy distance from train station.

« Marmadukes Town House Hotel »

People at the hotel were lovely. Did not eat there a night. It was an old hotel, with a bit of shabby elegance. I think we might have been unlucky with the room as the bed was very uncomfortable and we were moved as there was a lot of noise from fans below us that started at 6.30 am. The staff were very good about moving us.

    « nearly there »

nice overall and ideally located - does however need a revamp in certain areas ( yellowing of bath is very offputting ) and more care paid to the rooms - light bulbs missing , dusty cupboards , broken furniture .

    « Shabby chic...without the chic »

Had high expectations of this place and have fancied trying it for a while now but in all honesty, we were somewhat disappointed. Upon arrival whilst waiting for our room to be ready we decided to have a wine in the hotel bar, we asked for the Malbec and the server asked if I would prefer the house wine. I assumed she was offering this because she couldn't find the Malbec so I agreed for her convenience and then was shocked to find out it was actually a more expensive wine at £6 for a small glass. The price itself isn't a problem and the house red was very nice but I just felt a little like we had been up sold which doesn't make a great first impression. Furthermore our wine was served in mismatched glasses, not a huge deal admittedly but it's a lack of attention to detail which is disappointing. We got to our room which was pleasant enough and full of lovely looking furniture, dumped our bags and headed out. When we returned to the room after our night out we discovered how uncomfortable the bed was. The bed was incredibly creaky and the mattress was far too small and left around 5 inches of stained bed (with what looked like specks of blood - photograph attached) exposed at either side. The mattress protector was scruffy and full of holes. If we had been staying for a second night we would have asked to be moved. The bathroom was very nice and the provided toiletries and huge bath towels are lovely. However there was only a bath and an over bath shower, not a problem for us but something to be aware of. Breakfast was okay, staff in the breakfast room very pleasant although forgot to come over and ask us if everything was okay so we had to wait a while to get their attention as my bacon was undercooked (again not a problem for some, personal preference - although the menu does state that the bacon will be served crispy). Nice coffee and juice. The whole hotel seemed to us to be massively overheated, again just personal preference. Car parking tight but we felt it was very reasonable at £7 a night. Perhaps the most disappointing aspect of our stay was that, upon checkout, the receptionist failed to enquire how our stay had been or ask if everything had been okay. Again this lack of attention to detail is just disappointing. I feel that all things considered, my three star rating is more than fair and probably a tad generous. Much better value to be had elsewhere in York.

    « A real gem »

We spent two very comfortable nights here. We have nothing but praise for this hotel. All those in reception were delightful and extremely helpful with nothing being too much trouble. Our bedroom was spacious and the bathroom spotlessly clean. Breakfast would cater for all needs and was in the light, airy conservatory. The hotel was only ten minutes walk from the Minster. The hotel has parking which you need to reserve. We also had dinner here on both nights and suffice to say it was 'Michelin' standard and was some of the best food we have eaten in some time. Thoroughly recommend The Marmadukes

    « Well worth a visit. »

We stayed here Saturday night for one night and would certainly stay again and recommend it. The place is very characterful with high ceilings, mosaic floors and period features dotted around. It is also easy to find and only a stones' throw from central York. The reception area is very small but we had a very warm welcome from the young lady behind the counter. She was a lovely girl and very helpful, allowing us access to room early so we could get changed for wedding, offered to carry our bags and also park the car, absolute super star and credit to the hotel. We paid for parking and although car park is very small and cramped the staff will do it all for you, just leave them the keys. I also wouldn't worry about them doing so as the young girl easily manoeuvred our Range Rover in a very tight car park no problem, excellent driver. The room was very nice, lovely bed and very clean. It was also warm and quiet and consequently we slept well. Bathroom had a modern shower so all in room very nice. Breakfast was in a nice little room at the back and catered for Vegans and Vegetarians. My breakfast was lovely, coffee nice and fresh and service solid so again well done. All in a smashing little place and worth a try. Cheers.

    « Made my 21st birthday »

Stayed here for just the one night, as I was celebrating my 21st birthday in York. It's a beautiful town house, decorated so tastefully. Staff were lovely and friendly, and the room was spacious and comfortable. The hotel is just a short walk in to the town centre, and had we have visited in summer it looks as though it has gorgeous gardens. Had we have stayed for longer I would have also liked to try the bar as it looked very lovely. Breakfast the next morning was also amazing with lots of choice (see photo) and all round one of the best hotels I have stayed in. Thank you for making my birthday so memorable!

    « What a Gem of a Hotel! »

We arrived to a friendly and warm welcome at reception. The room was fabulous, clean , warm, well-equipped and a comfortable bed. Staff were very helpful with any questions we had. We booked in for dinner at their restaurant, The Park. This degustation dinner was superb, a Michelin standard.

« A good hotel with an excellent restaurant »

We stayed for just one night and enjoyed the fantastic tasting menu with selected wine in the restaurant. The hotel was comfortable, the room spacious and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good too! The deal we obtained was spectacular value and I would recommend it to anyone. We had an enjoyable time looking round York, which we didn't know very well - the location of the hotel was quiet and convenient.

    « Excellent overnight stay »

Great hotel, superbly located with a short walk into York. We had the four poster room with roll top bath. Bed really comfortable. Breakfast the following morning set us up for the day. Excellent all round.

« Very good value for money »

My husband and I we're looking for a hotel not to far away from the Grand theatre and this hotel came up as in walking distance. I checked the reviews on tripadvisor and found they were mixed but mostly good so we decided to book as it was only for one night. After battling to get to York because of the beast from the East had left York under a lot of snow we arrived after quiet a stressful journey. The reception staff were lovely and took us to our room in the annex. To be honest my heart sank when he said the annex because some of the reviews criticised the rooms there but we was very please with our room! It was well presented and the bed was very comfortable. The room was nice and warm bearing in mind the sub zero temperatures outside. My only complaint and its only a small one was the wooden floor in the room was freezing but would have been remedied if I had though to bring slippers. Over all a very pleasant stay.

« Lovely hotel well located »

Myself and my wife stayed for 3 nights midweek. We were warmly welcomed by friendly staff and given some excellent advice on the best local attractions and eateries. The hotel is well located only about 1/2 a mile from York's centre. We walked in and out of the city multiple times every day with ease, it's certainly easier than trying to park in the city. The hotel itself is beautiful, decorated with taste and has everything you need. There is a well appointed lounge, bar and restaurant downstairs. The breakfast is excellent, quality ingredients throughout for either cooked or continental (or both if you fancy!). Our room was great, like the rest of the hotel it was tastefully decorated with traditional furniture and had everything we needed. Would highly recommend.

    « Great Stay »

We had a lovely one night stay and thoroughly enjoyed it. The room was excellent and all the staff were very professional. After a superb meal in the restaurant and a good nights sleep breakfast was excellent. Very convenient for walking into York centre.

    « Excellent »

What a little gem of a place we had the loft apartment and loved it would defiantly be staying again, just a short walk into York, staff really help full breakfast was nice, we didn't use the restaurant but heard it good

    « Great hotel »

We had a night at the marmaduke hotel which was bought as a gift for christmas We had a lovely 4 poster room with en suite which was spotless combined with a great breakfast made the stay great . I would also like to say that the staff where fabulous nothing was too much trouble for them

« Wonderful hotel room very close to city centre »

We were very pleased with our room at the hotel - it was beautifully decorated, spacious, and had a large bathtub! The staff were also very friendly. It was situated in a quiet neighbourhood, and a maximum 10 minutes' walk away from the city centre.

    « Abit disappointing.. »

My partner and I along with our son stayed here on the 26th. Upon booking I asked if we could have a travel cot they said yes but for an extra £7.50 so said that we would bring our own but noticed I was still charged for it.(obviously we got refunded) We were a bit surprised to find out that we had to pay an extra £7 for parking but then they allowed us to leave it there on the 27th whilst we went to the shops. Check in was easy and were shown to our room which was nice but then we didn't know our room number when asked for it at breakfast. The room was warm during the evening but went really cold at night, it was snowing but our room only had single glazing so we had condensation and there was a crack on the window. The restaurant was closed so we had to venture out to have something to eat. The bed was too hard for our liking and breakfast was disappointing, saying that it is a AA Rosette. On my breakfast I asked for a poached egg and it came out hard instead of a nice runny egg and we didn't rate the sausages either. Ciaron, on reception was fantastic! He was the one who showed us to our room explained breakfast and even help my partner with the pushchair through the door (the little things) We are undecided whether or not to come back to Marmadukes as it was ciaron that really made our stay.

    « Poky Room »

At the check in we were asked to pay for car parking and breakfast. We were misled into thinking both were included in the deal when we booked. The room itself was in an annexe and was ridiculously had been described as a double room, a single bed would not have given much more room. There was no chair in the room (indeed, no room for one and a tiny wardrobe behind the door, so small we had to hang clothes on its door which in turn impeded the room door function. The underfloor heating was ok but the towel radiator was lethally hot; a sign did warn of this but if it is so dangerous do somehting about it! On checking out we were asked if everything "was fine" and when we poined all this out we were told we should have told staff when we checked in and they could have done something. We won't be going back.

    « visit to york »

my wife and I stayed here for 3 nights and we can say the position of the hotel is excellent for the city centre, within walking distance. The room was lovely with a very comfortable bed and the staff were outstanding. nothing being too much trouble. The only thing that puzzled us was why a hotel which is part of Great Western and has a car park on site would charge £7 per night to park? That being said, we will certainly be back to stay and re explore York. Staff were all top class but the reception staff should be rightly proud and were an excellent first face of the hotel-impressive. Thank you

    « Brilliant Break »

We have just returned home after spending two nights at Marmadukes. The hotel is in a lovely quiet location and the hotel itself was just as quiet. The hotel was clean and our room which was on the top floor in the annexe was warm and comfortable and although not huge was perfect for what we wanted and had plenty of storage. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and made us feel very welcome. The breakfast was lovely, it was served very quickly and the scrambled egg was delicious. The walk to the centre only takes about 10 minutes and there are plenty of shops, places to eat and lovely little pubs as well as the Minster, museums etc., We have loved our first visit to York and when we return we will definitely be staying at Marmadukes Hotel.

« Visiting my daughter at Uni »

As my daughter's accommodation is near the hospital this hotel was the perfect location. From the outside it in no way prepares you for inside it was fantastic the staff amazingly attentive nothing was to much trouble. The bedroom was spacious and had a free standing bath (just missing a shower ) I did not eat in the restaurant but I think I missed a treat. I will be staying here every time I visit York to see my daughter and even when she is not here

« Disappointing for the price »

When first arriving, this Hotel gives a great impression. It's in a grand old townhouse in a quiet street. It feels warm, and comfortable, with a very friendly welcome. The location is pretty fab, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, but only a short walk to the Minster. The best aspect of this Hotel was the staff and service; always friendly, helpful and attentive. They were excellent. But..... Although clean, we found our suite a little shabby; broken blinds let the light in and woke us early. Some lights didn't work. The TV remotes were very grimey. It all needed a little TLC. When we arrived after a long journey, the hot water ran out after a couple of minutes and we were left with a cold shower. The service door was propped open, so every time we went up and down to our room there was a lovely view of the scruffy staff areas with music blaring. And the breakfast was shocking. Cheap sliced bread, butter in foil portions like the local cafe, and despite waiting 40 minutes from ordering, the hot breakfast was dry and overcooked. Ingredients were tasteless and of poor quality. Not a good advert for their posh restaurant!! Overall these negatives were not a big deal perhaps. But the cost of the room was really quite high, and standards really should be better for the prices charged.

    « Marvellous Marmadukes »

We both enjoyed our 2 night stay. From start to finish the staff were so friendly & professional. Unfortunately I took unwell on our last night & an Ambulance was called. Special thanks to the lovely lady from reception who assisted us until the ambulance arrived. On our departure the next day, the kindness of the reception team was also appreciated. Hopefully we will return one day without any dramas.

    « Great location »

Very close to town centre so excellent for short break. Staff very helpful. Nice room. The food in the restaurant was excellent and we would definitely recommend it to anyone deciding to stay at the hotel

« Excellent hotel ideally situated. »

A smallish hotel around 10 minutes walk from York's city walls. Rooms are clean and well decorated with the usual facilities. Breakfast was very good, but the hotel does an amazing evening tasting menu. The restaurant is not cheap, but they run offers which include the menu with bed and breakfast which are tremendous value.

« Nice if you get a nice room »

The hotel is great, wonderful location, lovely staff and nice lounge and breakfast etc. But our room was in the attic , small , dark and not very nice at all, which ruined our stay. If you stay ask for a room anywhere but the attic

« Great location, staff and hotel. »

A big thanks to the staff at Marmaduke's for making our stay there such a great experience. They were helpful from the word go - including allowing us to park there pre-check-in. The rooms here are quirky and very individual - loved the vintage furniture and the effort that had been made to include everything needed for a comfortable stay. Breakfast was HUGE and delicious. Would certainly recommend it to anyone wishing to stay in York - but waning to avoid the chain hotels.

    « Excellent »

Large room in the anex section. Comfortable double bed. Great location for York city centre and tourist attractions. Breakfast was small but very nice. Some faff getting the car out the car park when leaving as someone that had blocked us in didn't leave their keys. Not the hotels fault though! Would definitely stay again!

« So far so good. »

Just arrived. Hotel is lovely and so are the staff. Not a slab of concrete or symmetrical box in sight! Bar open til 2am!! I feel a headache coming on. Still breakfast will hopefully sort that out?? Update tomorrow.

    « A wonderful find »

Spotlessly clean, comfortable and relaxing, while also excellent value. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful- the breakfast was outstanding - and included a delicious vegan option. Can't recommend highly enough.

    « Fantastic »

What a lovely characterful hotel. The decor was amazing all staff where attentive and the breakfast was lovely. I would recommend this hotel if you want a great base to explore York. Was within walking distance of a lot of gorgeous restaurants. Good to see proper tea (Yorkshire Tea) in the room only bad thing, was no mugs just teacups. The toiletries where also very good.

    « Absolutely great! »

Loved this hotel - and I am VERY picky. Friendly welcome. Lovely spacious room on the front of the hotel. I normally prefer contemporary furnishing but the lovely antique furniture against the fresh clean walls and floor really worked. The room could maybe have been a little warmer but it was a big room and a very cold night. Warm enough in bed and a very comfortable night's sleep. Big bathroom with roll top bath. We would have preferred a shower but as this was just a one night stay the lack of it was not too much of an inconvenience and it was a bit of novelty and a treat to have a soak in the bath. The public rooms were very attractive and spotlessly clean. Attractive breakfast room with attentive service and excellent food. Really good coffee. We have sampled many hotels in York recently and this is definitely a keeper. Many thanks.

« One night in York »

We booked a room in advance and paid £79 for two b&b. The parking was extra but we parked on the street outside for free overnight, nil incident had to move car by 10am. We had a lovely double room with a 4 poster bed in the annex, which meant that we had to walk a couple of steps outside to the main house for reception and breakfast. This was not a problem at all. The decor was very nice with beatiful furniture tastefully decorated. The venue is about a 10 minute walk into the historical York town centre, again this was no problem at all, unless you have mobility difficulties, in which case a taxi would be an alternative.

    « Perfect »

Stayed here for a few nights in the Loft Suite.. We were made very welcome from the moment we arrived . All of the staff we encountered were very helpful & polite. The suite was perfect & spacious & the sauna a huge bonus. The highlight of this hotel has to be the park restaurant.. the tasting menu was absolutely stunning & would stay here again just to eat there. Bit of a nightmare getting a space outside but once we did we left the car there as only a 10 minute walk into York. Would we recommend & stay here again ??? Absolutely.....

    « Love this hotel »

Beautiful hotel, 5 star standard rooms and service. We stay here every year for our wedding anniversary in the loft suite. Breakfast is excellent, and staff do everything possible to make your stay perfect. We won't spend our anniversary anywhere else and booked our return already! Thank you

    « Three nights wasn't long enough... »

We treated ourselves to 3 nights in the Loft Suite and had a wonderful stay. It was a spacious and comfortable suite, yet very cosy and snug. Nice firm bed, 2 comfy sofas for lounging and a fantastic bathroom with a generous supply of toiletries (and a separate loo, a great idea because you could spend a loooong time in that bath!). The bath was lovely and deep, there were two powerful rain showers, and the barrel sauna was perfect for warming up after a day in snowy York! The breakfasts were beautifully cooked and there was even a vegan option with scrambled tofu. A choice of free morning paper was a nice touch, too. The only small criticism I have is that there could be quite a lot of noise from adjoining rooms, partly because it's an old building with creaky floorboards. But all in all, perfect for a romantic getaway.

    « Fabulous stay,Fabulous staff »

We had booked a two night break at this hotel after reading review's on this site.Well what a fantastic hotel with lots of charm and character. We were welcomed at reception by Kieran (a very professional member of staff)after some initial confusion at check-in regarding our inclusive breakfast rate,(not the hotels fault I might add) we were promptly escorted to a room & wow what a room. the room was in keeping with the Victorian style building and excellently presented. The bathroom was spacious & spotless with an excellent shower over a 'p' shaped bath ,so the best of both worlds if required. The breakfast was a delight and waitresses very attentive to our needs.Upon checkout we were allowed to leave our car at the hotel whilst we had one last walk around this beautiful town.My wife & I Will definately be staying at this hotel again .many thanks to Lucy & her team for making our stay so enjoyable.

« Good stay in York »

A nice, clean, comfortable room at the top of the house. Friendly staff. Fair price for the accommodation offered. There's a fee charged for on-site parking and nine quid for a glass of Merlot is too steep.

    « Winter break »

My wife and I stayed at Marmadukes for our 25th anniversary a couple of years ago and had a lovely stay, so when we decided to have a last minute winter break in York recently, we thought of Marmadukes again. We had a two night stay with dinner in the Park Restaurant on the second night. The whole experience was excellent and the staff are extremely friendly and polite. The tasting menu with wine was as good as we remembered it from our previous stay. We will definitely return again in the future.

    « Great evening meal! »

Really loved the evening meal and as good as Michelin stared restaurants plus great service. Rooms nice although quite expensive. Breakfast was not of the same standard, however, that would not stop us staying again as the evening meal really made the stay.

    « Warm and friendly »

Arrived on time for check in but our rooms were not ready, we were offered coffee or complimentary wine while we waited, we accepted the wine!! We were in single rooms in the annexe, whilst small they had everything you needed. It was a very cold snowy weekend in December, the rooms were lovely and warm. Convenient for the town centre, 10-15 min flat walk. We both had the same issue with the shower as we couldn't get them to work, but a quick call to reception soon resolved the issue. Staff were friendly and polite, they were happy to store our luggage after check out for collection later as our train was not till late afternoon. Breakfast was delicious, would happily stay here again.

The sitting room of the suite should have been warmed prior to our arrival and the kitchenette floor was unpleasantly sticky. In addition we would have loved to have found a bath in the suite for a good soak.

    « 2nd visit »

This was our 2nd visit 2 couples . the staff again faultless from the bar staff reception and chamber maid all friendly and nothing too much trouble they are a credit to this hotel. The room although a little on the small side had everything you need with a lovely en suite with bath furniture again in keeping with the hotel . the lounge is very relaxing . Would i stay here again?,,,,,always.we love it.

    « Brilliant hotel »

What a fantastic hotel. Our room was beautiful and the location was only about a 10 minute walk to the centre of York. We would recommend Marmadukes to anyone who wished to have a traditional place to stay. The service from the staff was perfect.

    « Mixed feelings - great location »

Pluses - got a great deal on Very pleased with the value. Hands down best thing about the hotel was the location - easy walking distance to the city center, without the city center prices. 10-15 minute easy walk. I did not eat at the hotel, but I heard great things all over town about the restaurant. Room was clean. Very small, which I expected. Super fancy shower head in the bathroom. Towel warmer. Minuses - I am a short person, and I barely fit in the bed. The fancy shower head takes up too much room in the shower and makes it very difficult to maneuver to get clean. There is no shelf in the shower, so you have to keep your toiletries on the floor of the shower, which makes accessing your shampoo, etc without bashing your head on the fancy shower head a feat in body contortion. The towel warmer didn't really work. Single-paned windows meant NO sound proofing for the early morning deliveries - which happened right outside my window. Mixed signals - Wifi dropped me constantly the first two nights, but... on night 3 there was a whole new cable/wifi that worked great. Arrived too early for check in, and the "Piss off, go find something to do on your own" was not specifically stated by the front desk, although heavily implied, but... same staff member delivered my bags to my room instead of making me carry them up. Would I stay there again? I might. It really is a great value for the location. But I'm not in love with this hotel like some of my other reviews.

    « Not a 4 star hotel »

Stayed at this hotel in december 2017 .we stayed for 2 night stay .we wanted a walk in shower as my wife cannot get into a bath after having a knee operation .the staff found us a room with a walk in shower but it was on top floor which made it worse as the hotel Had no lift just 3 flights of stairs. The hotel does not cater for eldely residents having to climb flights of stairs to there bedroom. The bedrooms are dated and dull . The breakfast was good and staff excellent but the hotel policy on car parking at £7.00 a day is a insult as you staying at the hotel never being charged for parking at hotel before with the hotel having its own parking.and if you do park they ask you for your car keys in case they need to move it but do not accept any reponsibility if they do any damage to it what a cheek .this hotel is not a 4 star 3 star at most charging you 4/5 star prices..if you want a 4 or 5 star hotel shop around

    « Disappointed »

Stayed here for two nights, upon check in staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Excited to be staying in one of the four post room with a roll top bath however this room sadly did disappoint, we stayed in the annex building adjacent the main hotel on the ground level. Very noisy with other guests as we were at the bottom of the stairs and the main door opening and closing was extremely loud. Plus the light in the Hall was on all night which kept us awake, along with the very noisy bed which at first looked so comfortable. Sadly also the base on the bed below the mattress was stained and looked unsightly. Woke on the first morning to be covered in white fluff. It seemed like a napkin or tissues were washed with the bedding and felt it was unacceptable. And not something we'd of expected. Did let reception know and we had our bedding changed and room cleaned. No real apologies were received which let it down for us. Decor of the room was nice although the the wooden join to the bathroom on the floor was broken and I tripped over it a few times. Annoyingly the iron in the room ruined my outfit for our evening dinner as it poured out with stained water upon placing the iron down. Luckily I'd packed a second choice. Breakfast had an good selection of hot cooked however continental lacked of presentation. And the pastries were poorly cooked. My bacon had foil pieces on it which was a little off putting and the sausage was a little anaemic. Waitresses very efficient and friendly. We found the Hotel was a great location to what we wanted and the evening dinner in the Park Restaurant was truly amazing (left a separate review for that) Paying for parking wasn't an issue as we had previously looked into it. Overall disappointed with our room we did have a nice break away and an exceptional dining experience in the evening. Had we received a sufficient apology upon check out and when letting reception know about the bedding, however felt and left very let down. Would be grateful to be contacted by the Hotel to discuss our stay further. Although rated poor our stay was between poor and average due to the nicer parts of the stay unfortunately for us, we couldn't rate our stay higher.

    « lovely stay »

lovely hotel with helpful staff. Breakfasts are very good would stay again easy walking distance to city centre lounge and bar areas lovely to relax in after a days shopping also kept our luggage all day until it was time for our train

« Nice quality hotel with character within walking distance of the Minster »

We booked the four poster rooms as standard rooms had all been reserved and were not disappointed ?? The decor was amazing and fitted perfectly with the historic city of York Bathroom had a rolled top bath which was lovely but no proper shower ...just attachment to the bath taps...maybe could do with an upgrade?? Good choice for breakfast although the quality of the full English was very disappointing ....was expecting top end quality / local sourcing etc Walking ????? distance of the Minster. We did come by car and the parking is very limited and has to be pre booked .....thought to charge £7 per day was excessive. I have never been charged to park in hotel's own grounds before ??
