Stayed here for 2 nights as came to York for my birthday. Was a lovely hotel and lovely staff. Close to everything we wanted . We plan on coming back to York at some point and will definitely stay here again. Breakfast was included which was a bonus and was delicious. Thank you for a nice stay.
Lovely hotel with very warm and welcoming staff. I stayed here unplanned due to a problem with the rail service, arriving late and a bit flustered and anxious. The lady at the front desk was friendly and helpful. My room was comfy, quiet and had everything I needed, plus things I didn't need for such a short stay (ironing board, iron, heater, fan). Nice shower/ bath with good water pressure. Breakfast in the morning was delicious with a great range of options to choose from and a lovely waitress. Decor is lightly outdated, but it had no impact on my visit, and it made it feel quite cosy. I'd be happy to stay here again, or recommend it to a friend/ family member. Thanks Hotel Kilima.
Great location for visiting York. Easy walk into City, but also has bus stops nearby with regular buses. Car parking on site ( costs £10.00) . All staff I met were very friendly and helpful. Room clean and spacious with all facilities required ( including an excellent fan which was appreciated in the hot weather spell ) My bed was very comfortable Breakfast was lovely ( cooked to perfection) and served by a very nice lady. Enjoyed the use of indoor swimming pool. Especially after long days seeing York. Booking times was advised and most of time I had it to myself. (Bonus). Downside - From outside, especially at rear where building work is taking place, the hotel does not look at it's best. Inside is dated but that goes with age of hotel. I was on the ground floor near staircase, with no view and at times noisy. The lack of view did not bother me as I was out visiting York most of the time. I stay in a lot of hotels and Noise can be an issue anywhere so I now use earplugs ! I really enjoyed my short 3 day stay at this hotel and if I visit York again I would happily book again. In my view it was excellent for what I paid and expected in a popular tourist city. I had booked 2 days but then added an extra day at the start. I booked day 1 direct with hotel and the receptionist arranged for me to have room early. Very helpful.
Just back from the Kilima Hotel had another fantastic experience. Great Booking Service, Very nice and helpful staff throughout the hotel. Breakfast excellent and Hotel Rooms very clean and comfortable. Nothing is a bother to the staff who talk to you and make your stay pleasurable. Robert and Isobel Murray.
My husband and I love to visit York and we were recommended this hotel Great location, safe parking, delicious breakfast, comfortable bedrooms and a swimming pool and steam room to use Chris and his team are always welcoming, thanks for another great stay
The best thing about this hotel is the staff, they are outgoing, friendly and nothing is too much trouble. The hotel is in a great location roughly a 10-15 min walk to the centre which we didn't mind. Costed us around £6 in an Uber. Outside of the hotel is lovely and in keeping with the historic local area however inside is very tired and scruffy. The receptionist that a checked us in was smoking directly outside the entrance which I didn't find very professional. We were in room 11 on ground floor by reception and whilst the room was very big and spacious it had a tiny window which gave no natural light. The curtains were ripped and the lampshades next to the bed had seen better days. The room itself was very clean but there were a few old cobwebs in the corners of the ceiling. First night we slept very well however second night we was woken around 5am by people above traipsing back and forth slamming doors this went on all morning till around 8:30am. Breakfast was excellent with great choice and the chap serving was chatty and friendly. Swimming pool was clean and adequate but again some areas a little tired like the walls. We would have mentioned our issues on checkout but there was nobody on the reception desk. It's such a shame because this hotel could be lovely but we expected more from a Best Western.
Cosy, small hotel, walking distance from the shops/museums in York. The friendliest staff, who did everything they could to make us feel at home at the hotel. Very good breakfast, something for every taste, including full english breakfast, and very good gluten free options!
nice hotel, clean, comfortable and very friendly. lovely breakfast. enjoyed the swimming pool! the hotel is within comfortable walking distance of the ancient city with lots to see and do and many restaurants offering food from across the world.
Great stay, loved having pool, room very clean, breakfast lovely. Would stay again if came back to York. Friendly staff
This hotel is friendly and very welcoming close to the city centre, parking is an additional cost which is not mentioned when you book
A lovely individual hotel, very clean and welcoming. Comfy beds nice spacious rooms and an amazing breakfast, 2 eggs! Served by a waitress, not buffet. Wonderful! Also has a pool and a small gym. But as a tip, it's better to book direct. A lovely stay.
Excellent Booking Service direct with hotel. Received update on booking prior to arrival. Excellent welcoming Receptionist who checked the room and allowed us in early. Room Spotless and everything you needed for your stay was provided. Excellent Maid Service clean room and provided anything necessary such as fresh towels etc. Great service staff in the morning at breakfast nothing was a bother and they were very welcoming. Various Lady's on the reception and everyone of them were very pleasant and helpful but most of all welcoming. Great Location and the Facilities in the hotel are excellent especially the peaceful swim in the pool. Overall a Welcoming hotel with friendly staff and spotless throughout the hotel with private smoking area along with bar and leisure facilities. Excellent stay and would definitely recommend. The hotel is a little old fashioned in decor but very comfortable with everything one needed. We had a spacious family room and slept well. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful. We had no problem parking and enjoyed using the swimming pool. The location was good, in a pleasant area, an easy walking distance to a good choice of restaurants.
What a lovely friendly hotel not far from city centre. Breakfast was one of the best we have ever had ………………………………………………………………. …………………………………………………………………..,………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
What a fabulous hotel. The staff were extremely lovely and so helpful. They gave us tips on great places to go which we thoroughly enjoyed. The price is very reasonable considering how great this hotel was and particularly how central the location is. It's approximately a 15 minute walk into York Centre. We had a double room and stayed with a friend who had a single room. Both rooms were extremely clean and decorated beautifully. The bed was extremely comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. The showers were lovely and exceptionally clean. We will definitely be back again when we next visit York and I will be recommending this place to friends and family.
Excellant hotel everything wonderful from the staff to the rooms to the bedrooms Breakfast delicious Swimming pool and steam room the best Best hotel to stay for car parking Location to town Restuarants nearby Valentinos just brilliant Thanks everyone at the hotel
On arrival the hotel looked old and dated. The decor was like an old people's home and the bedrooms were similar. Very disappointing given the great reviews. Will have to stay now but feel very uncomfortable here. Staff on check in friendly.
The staff were so friendly and helpful. They advised about restaurants offering to book if we wanted. Breakfasts were delicious so compliments to the Chef. The pool and steam room were both kept clean and because you book a slot I actually had them both to myself which was great. Thank you so much to all of the staff for their hospitality, we'll definitely be back.
Lovely hotel in York. Very friendly staff and happy to help us. Big car park and we had no problems parking. Our room was on the ground floor and it was very clean and spacious, complete with a king sized bed, as we requested on booking. Bathroom was very clean and I enjoyed having a bath every day. Breakfast was delicious and always hot. We didnt get chance to use the pool, but heard it was really nice. The city centre was a short bus/taxi ride away, but you could walk if you felt energetic! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Kilima Hotel and will definitely be back again this year sometime. Definitely recommend it to family and friends. Thank you so much.
We stayed for two nights. I checked for bedbugs when we first got there and couldn't see any. I woke up in the middle of the second night feeling really itchy and found adult bedbugs hiding under the beds. The hotel gave us 25% off our bill as we had to throw away our bags as there was no way to fumigate them. This was all they offered. We had to cut our trip short to get home and deal with this. Despite taking every precaution the infestation followed us home. Not staying here again.
We had a great stay with the family. We stay here every year as it's such an excellent hotel. The staff are lovely, very friendly and helpful, the hotel is nice and clean and has a great swimming pool which is really nice to use and an excellent breakfast both days we stayed.
Reception was very accommodating. Arrived really early and had been allocated a top room deluxe room but wanted a lower level due to partners knee surgery earlier in the year. They had a first floor room we could have which was ready and available immediately. Breakfast lady was really nic and nothing was too much trouble Manager was also really friendly and took time to chat and make you feel at home Would highly recommend and will definitely go back when going to York Also the bonus it has its own car park for a minimal fee. Secure and safe
Friendly hotel situated approximately 10 minutes walk from the city centre. Very friendly staff, rooms comfortable but could do with updating. The heated indoor pool was great! Only offers breakfast but well done and freshly made to order. There is a small bar area with drinks available for guests. Would definitely recommend.
The members of staff were very hepful. I was able to check in very quickly and head back out to my taxi without the mI would recommend this hotel for its location, average price range and quality. Wouod book again if in York.
A lovely hotel in a great location. We had a room at the front of the hotel and it was a little noisy. My partner and I did find the bed uncomfortable. We would be back but would not want to stay in the same room... Sorry!
Really enjoyed my stay at the Kilima Hotel. Everything is channeled to make you feel at home with the added benefit of being well cared for. Looking forward to enjoying the new extension block rooms/facilities on my next visit
Great location for a city break. The staff were really helpful and professional. Internet access is excellent and quality of food at breakfast was very good. The swimming pool is a nice feature. Unfortunately it is currently undergoing extensive building work which was not mentioned on the booking. Though is understandably necessary .The window in our room looked directly into the building works so there was no natural light. The bath was also very cracked. The rooms allowed in a bit of noise from adjoining rooms and the corridor. Many parts around the hotel also seem a little bit worn and in need of proper maintenance so currently feels poor value for £175 a night not including parking or breakfast. When the extension is finished and the rooms are all refreshed, there's a good chance it will be. If you just need a reliable base for visiting York with no frills and you can get a good rate then this could be the hotel for you.
The staff were super helpful and a pleasure to deal with. Lovely bar and dining , nice family room with plenty of space. Really enjoyed the pool as well. Was great value for money and a lovely place to stay. Would advise booking over the phone as the price was better than booking online. Only about 10 mins to walk to town centre too.
A very pleasant hotel housed in a former Victorian rectory dating from 1871, featuring original fixtures & vaulted cellar, the church associated with the hotel is about 200 yards away. Breakfast was large and very good , comfortable beds and cosy rooms, hotel staff very friendly and outgoing, the hotel has a swimming pool which we used daily, a very quaint hotel with lots of character.
Stayed over for the weekend for races. Location was great for racecourse & town centre. Plenty off pubs/ restaurants nearby. Would definitely stay again. Hotel staff very friendly. hotel could do with freshening up
Great experience with our family of four. Boys were made to feel very welcome and loved the pool. Staff were great throughout. Hotel was clean and comfortable. Staff were helpful offered helpful advice. Location also good - just fifteen mins to centre with lots of buses if you didn't want to walk.
From the moment you walk in the doors you are made to feel so welcome by Chris the Manager and all his staff.Car parking so your car is safe Fabulous rooms Breakfast. Swimming pool EVERYTHING IS EXCELLANT Many thanks Carol and Dennis x
Hotel place in york Within walking distance of city centre take the 5,5a or 22. If your fit? The hotel itself Not the best condition a little warn! Reception and entrance ok general decor warn but passible. First floor no lift so not accessible and either was the instructions and fire safety notices. No what happens in a fire for disabled patrons. Needs modernising both in culture and safety. Staff were fantastic and really helped me with the difficulties there were. Could not be more helpful. Room not a good one prone to traffic noises there was no air conditioning so there was a fan! Not bad and I had a four poster bed! There a new build work going on so maybe these room would be better. So out of 10 I would have to give 6 for this hotel as they are not following health safety legislation or have an Equality focus! Price was reasonable and the breakfast was 10 pounds extra. The breakfast was very good and a good choice.
Beautiful, clean, very well run hotel. The staff are so friendly and can't do enough for You. Lovely little downstairs bar and an outside terrace you can sit on. 15/20 minutes walk from the city centre which is perfect as the location of the hotel means it's quiet and you don't get disturbed during the night. Easy find and easy parking. Would definitely stay again.
I have stayed several times this year Its Spotlessly clean, an old building with individual rooms all slightly grande. I prefer the 1st floor rear / right side rooms as their quiet and light. Its a well managed hotel. The Receptionists are all lovely and helpful, the cleaning staff keep the rooms immaculate. The beds are firm but have quality bedding. The breakfasts are bespoke, well cooked to order, served by friendly lovely staff. The hotel employs local people who are very helpful and knowledgeable of the area. The best secret is the lovely underused pool with small steam sauna and a small but comprehensive gym with light weights. Its a 15 minute walk to the railway station and 20 minutes to the centre. The hotel is in a quiet area except for rush hour. Although it doesn't do evening meals there is one of Yorks best restaurants- Valentinos- a five minute walk away where reasonably priced excellent food is available- best to book as its very popular. Downside is the lack of continental breakfasts and the en-suites although clean have shower curtains - but thats just a personal thing. Overall its a great place to stay.
From the first contact to the last we were made to feel welcome. The team at this hotel are fantastic every member of the team we came across were polite and more importantly to us made a fuss of our little man. The hotel is in need of upgrades however this did not impact are stay at all. Breakfast was of a very good quality and some of the best poach eggs I have had in a while!! We will be back next year …
The only thing that i like of that hotel is the receptionist she was very nice , old ,old ,old building , the floor of my room make so much noise i was afraid to walk on it and end it up at the basement , toilet sealling extractor leak water straight to toilet seat ,walls like paper , sunday night a couple came to next room at 10 pm , i can tell you with my tv on everything they say and how nice she was moaning during sex and the sound of flip flops " if you know what i mean" i walk out of there at 3 am to never return! Ibis allways ibis i dont even know why i have even try this !
We booked this hotel having stayed in the area before and knew the location and walking distance into york or the bus stop outside. We arrived and parked our car, reception area big enough with a dated appearance but still lovely and decorated with Christmas approaching. Room 1 it was a four poster bedroom lovely room clean tidy. Everything we needed was in the room towels, shower gel, hot water radiators hot, couldn't hear the road as its double glazed. Tv so my partner could watch the football. Breakfast was lovely a great choice cereal, fruit, cooked breakfast. All the staff where helpful didn't have any problems at all. I did see the pool but I had a sniffle so didn't bring my swim wear. Would definitely stay here again and book direct as get free parking and a slight discount so its a win win.
As always we had a fantastic weekend in York staying at the hotel. The staff are all incredibly friendly and helpful, breakfast was amazing and the hotel is clean throughout with a great pool and gym - couldn't ask for more, looking forward to next time.
I booked online for 11th November 2022 and when I arrived was shown to room 11, which I took as a good omen. In fact, it was a 3-person room and I was solo thus had plenty of space and a choice of beds. The hotel also has an indoor swimming pool so i I stay again I'll bring along my trunks. The friendly staff gave me advice on where to eat and didn't pressure me to order breakfast. After a comfortable night, I went out clutching hotel keys the next morning to take part in the Knavesmire Parkrun, which is why I didn't want a full belly. Therefore I can't rate their breakfast, but I returned from running to find all my stuff just as I'd left it (well, one can always be a little parnoid) and had time for a shower. Incidentally, neither the shower nor the TV required a PhD to operate successfully! Altogether a more than satisfactory overnighter.
All the front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. Sammy offered to do a load of laundry to realy help us out, and Tammy folded it and put it in our room while we were gone. The new part of the hotel was closed due to a hot water problem, and the old part seemed dated but clean. The bus stop is right next to the hotel, so it is easy to get into town and the train station.
This is one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. It is only because there were not other options that I did not immediately walk out and ask for a refund. I would have tried to wash my self clean if my only option hadn't been a bathroom that was old, dirty and useless. The rooms are very old and tired and the whole place feels like it hasn't been done up or cleaned properly in 30 years. It is really a terrible place and should not be in the Best Western chain. Whilst I waited for a room I sat on the terrace next to a crisp bag with a dirty nappy in it. Once I got to the room it was awful. the window is tiny and everything felt dirty. The bathroom was disgraceful. Everything was old and dirty. Nothing really works like it should in a modern day hotel and this is a relic of a really awful time of cheap hotels in the past. The bed was two singles pushed together and sold as a double (at £175 a night when I stayed!), the pillows were thin and horrid, there is a tiny TV and really awful lighting. There is no room service to really speak of. There is nothing nice in your room, if you want coffee etc the is a communal station in the hallway. It is in an annoying part of town but luckily York is small enough to walk around easily. It gets one star from me because two things were good, the people were nice enough and the internet worked well; also there is no way to give zero stars on a rating. Honestly do not stay here, it is really a terrible place which should have been renovated over a decade ago. Do yourself a favour and stay literally anywhere else in York!
Location is spot on. It's only a 20 min walk to town or there's a bus right outside the hotel. This time I came with my mum. The staff make this place special - in the 1 night we stayed we had full conversations with the owner - great guy alway present and involved, lovely sammy on reception, (and Sammy's mum the following morning) the lady who served us breakfast and one of the cleaning ladies - I've stayed in hotels for a week and not been spoken to at all!!! Everyone makes you feel so welcome and cannot do enough for you. We had a lovely cosy twin room. The breakfast was delicious. Very highly recommend this hotel. Looking forward to the next visit with you.
You will not be disappointed if you stay at this hotel. The decor is stylish and comfortable. Car park at rear ( for a small charge) Clean rooms, great staff, breakfast was excellent and location is good
My daughter and I stayed at the Kilima over the weekend. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Our room was immaculate. We especially loved the indoor swimming pool. We will definitely stay again.
Great location for visiting York, the hotel is clean if dated in decor with welcoming and helpful staff. The cooked breakfast is always excellent. We've stayed at the hotel many times which is the best recommendation I can give.
When we first arrived we thought the decor was very dated and the room was hot and there was an air freshener type smell that we couldn't get rid of and was quite sickly. However, we grew to like the hotel during our stay. The staff were lovely and the hotel was very clean. The pool was fab and the breakfast was really good. We would definitely stay again, especially as the bus stop was right outside and buses ran every 10 minutes. The walk into the city centre was nice too. We thought it was a bit pricey compares to other hotels we have stayed at close by but it was definitely a nice, friendly, quirky stay!
A comfortable stay. Friendly staff and a really great breakfast experience. Really couldn't have asked for more. The hotel is a little tired in places but it was clean and welcoming so can't complain. In a good location within reasonable walking distance of city centre.
Race meeting visit Our base for the last 25 yrs Clean tidy. Old building awaiting an extension and upgrade but still in decent order Breakfast is cooked to order and is decent Rooms comfortable and decent size Small Swimming pool ( must book as like lots of hotels are now sub letting for swimming classes and members ) 15/20 mins into centre 20/25 mins to racecourse
Stayed for Ebor festival with fiancé. Friendly, welcoming staff who were helpful through stay. Rooms huge and spotlessly clean. Really good sleep on comfortable mattress. Good location for town and racecourse. Good size swimming pool and gym. Good quality, well cooked and great value breakfast available. Ladies serving breakfast hospitable and couldn't do enough to make sure you had everything you needed. Faultless stay.
This is our second visit to this hotel. We came back because the whole team was so helpful and welcoming. I think this hotel is good value for money and close to town centre. Doesn't attract stag and hen dos so is perfect for families or a couple wanting a quiet weekend away.
Just had a very enjoyable 2 day break at the Kilima Hotel, the staff are so friendly and welcoming and the breakfast is excellent, hope to stay again. We stayed for the 2 day showcase festival at York racecourse, I can highly recommend, the hotel is in walking distance.
Not an awful lot to say... it's clean and staff are cheerful. This is an old school establishment with physical keys to unlock bedrooms. The swimming pool is really a plus point as is the car park. Receptionist was really friendly. We walked the 20 or so minutes into town, it's flat all the way.
Typical best Western hotel, clean and tidy all staff very friendly happy in their work, everyone helpfully. We didn't have breakfast this stay but usually a decent breakfast available. Always happy to stay at a best Western hotel.
Great hotel for visiting York. Bus stop outside hotel and only £1.20 per adult fare. Lovely receptionist, very informative and helpful re sights to see. Room was immaculate, had 4 poster bed and separate lounge area. Tea/coffee etc are placed on table outside of rooms, great idea as you can replenish them as needed. Pool slots have to be booked to keep to the max numbers but pool was superb and steam room a bonus. All areas of the hotel were spotless and best bit was breakfast.. Gaynor is an absolute gem, so cheerful and can't do enough to make sure you're catered for and breakfast itself was delicious. Wonderful stay here and will definitely return when we visit York again.
Our stay at The Kilima Hotel was perfect. The hotel is beautiful. The team there are professional, friendly, welcoming and genuine. From the reception to breakfast to check out everything was 100%. We will definitely return.
We stayed here for one night 3rd July so that we could attend the University Open Day with our 17 year old daughter. We had 2 rooms 17 and 18 on the side of the building. Reception staff were extremely friendly and helpful and welcoming. Susan at breakfast was so attentive and kind to us and the breakfast was excellent. Plenty of choice and very well cooked. Our only other comment would be that the rooms we stayed in were rather dated and dark in terms of the decor however the staff more than made up for this as nothing was too much trouble for them in terms of making sure we were happy. This is our 2nd stay in this hotel. The breakfast stood out as very good the last time we stayed here too! We would stay here again - its comfortable and very pleasant all round.
Beautiful Hotel, lovely happy helpful staff, clean, comfortable bed, spacious room, we really enjoyed staying here with the extra added bonus of the pool and steam room we had for an hour to ourselves would highly recommend thank you.
Only a 15 minute walk from city centre, this hotel was affordable and well-kept. Friendly staff members were knowledgeable and gave lots of suggestions for places to explore. The room was quaint and had everything I need, including a nice shower, TV and lots of mirrors! I was amazed by the beautiful pool and gym, both of which are free of charge (pool slots need to be booked prior to use). I only wish that I could have stayed longer. Thank you so much!
Beautiful old building with a lot of character and a spacious layout. Rooms were spotless and had everything you need including iron, ironing board and hair dryer. Swimming pool and sauna were a welcome bonus. Staff were very friendly, always on hand and very helpful. Short walk to the centre of town.
Choose this hotel due to its location and te reviews on Tripadvisor. Was not disappointed, staff were really welcoming, rooms with good showers. Breakfast was delicious and server could not do enough for us. It's only 15 minutes walk to the centre of York.
My wife and I stayed at the Kilima for five nights travelling up from the West Midlands. This hotel is excellently positioned for York City and it's surrounds and has onsite car parking and an in door swimming pool to boot. We chose it as a base for those very reasons. York has an excellent bus service and the Kilima has a stop virtually outside. The rooms are comfortable and we slept well every night. The staff are excellent, very well informed and most helpful. We took up some of their suggestions and were most pleased with the results. We look forward to a return visit. Many thanks.
A bit pricey for what it is. Stayed in greater London the following night in significantly better hotel for £30 less (and no additional parking charges either). Clean and tidy. Staff friendly and helpful. Could do with restaurant for meals other than breakfast and breakfast orange juice in cartons to drink through straw is odd, but worked, just.
It's been a good few years since last stay. Still as friendly, helpful clean and comfortable place to stay. A real home away from home! Safe parking, free if you book direct with Hotel You can walk to York station and town in 10 minutes. Thank you
Visited recently alone to go to a concert in York. Excellent little hotel; only a 10 min walk from the station and about 20 mins into York itself, so really handy. Very quiet (apart from the odd creaky floorboard!) and clean. The staff are lovely and friendly, and the breakfast was excellent. It might not be a modern "boutique" hotel but it was comfortable, and you can't go wrong at the price.
Hotel overpriced but close to where we needed to be. Ensure you take your bank card as no change at the bar. Only one member of staff that is checking people in and showing them to rooms, so be prepared to wait if you do want a drink when you arrive
A special thank you goes out first of all to Mandy who made us feel so welcomed, we were only staying for 2 nights but nearly stayed a 3rd if not for family commitments and a fur baby at home. From check in to check out things went so well and the wealth of knowledge from the staff was so refreshing, a family feel good experience which we will be recommending to friends and colleagues alike. Thanks for making our stay in York a pleasant and memorable one, best regards Stephen and Helen Room 26
The staff were so friendly and helpful in ever way The breakfast was well presented and served to us In a very safe way. Our bedroom's were very clean A little dated but we're would definitely go back And the swimming pool was so lovely too.
Me and my mother stayed here for a night and did all there was to offer. the staff were friendly and approachable. The pool was great, with depth and width, we went to twice in our less than 24 hour stay - 6-7 (pm) and 8-9 (am). We enjoyed breakfast, as we had cooked and all extras. We particularly enjoyed the bedroom space and what we were provided. Mother liked the availability of tea and coffee as well as sugars etc. The bar was enjoyable but more staff would be helpful as the receptionist was the bartender and helper at breakfast. Would 100% stay again if travelling to York.
Staff were so friendly and welcoming, despite the fact that I'd accidentally booked 2 double rooms although I was a solo traveller (must not have been fully awake when I booked the first) Lovely decor throughout the hotel and a very cozy feeling. If I'm ever in York I will be booking here again.
We had a lovely three day break, room & breakfast was great. Made to feel very welcome by the Manger & Receptionists. Also kept me supplied with plasters due to walking to far in wrong shoes ! Home from home, thankyou
Could not have asked for a more friendly welcome and overall stay. We particularly liked that the hotel has stayed true to its history and the decor and furniture were traditional. The staff could not do enough to make our short city break any better, great advice on where to visit and places to eat. The room was spotless and the bed was comfy. They offered to carry our bags to the room (quite rare these days) there was as much help yourself tea, coffee and milk at various stations near the rooms which is fab as you don't feel cheeky going to ask for more at reception. As for breakfast the next day it was exceptional, so much choice from cereals, yoghurt, and a full range of hot items cooked anyway you like. We didn't use the pool on this occasion but the leisure are was also spotless. We will absolutely book and stay here again. Top tip is too book direct as the parking was included when booked direct but extra of through a 3rd party. Overall a fair price for our stay close enough to York centre to walk in but having driven also able to safely park the car without paying silly multi-storey prices. The staff at this hotel are exceptional and truly want you to have the best stay.
My partner and I had a 2 night stay without breakfast. The room was very clean and warm, the water was hot and the shower powerful. We had no problem with Wi-Fi or TV. We used the swimming pool which was a real treat. This hotel is not ultra modern and I feel it is all the better for it. This is the 2nd time I've used it, it is handy for the city centre and local restaurants and I'll definitely stay again next time I visit York.
Very disappointed with the standard of facilities at the hotel, considering the price for one night's stay. In addition there are hidden car park charges of £10.00 per day, which, for guests of the hotel is quite outrageous. There is building work going on, the decor is particularly dated, and the steam room doesn't work properly. Shabby, and shamefully overpriced is how I would describe my experience at this hotel.
I travelled to York to see my friend. When I arrived Chris was friendly and helpful. The rooms are spacious and very clean and the breakfast was excellent. The lady who served breakfast was really lovely too. I will definitely be staying again
Sadly only had one nights stay this time. Gaz and I were travelling back from Masham and wanted a stopover to visit Brew York. We arrived earlier than booking in time but we were lucky that our room was ready so we dropped our bags off and headed into the city (leaving our car in their safe car park) which is only 15 mins or so walk away. As always we got a friendly welcome, very clean room, delicious breakfast and we wished we could have stayed longer, but we shall be back again soon and would definitely recommend this hotel
Great hotel, just 15 min walk from city centre. Opted for room only. Lovely comfortable bed plus ensuite bath with shower and complimentary toiletries. Adequate parking at the rear. Facilities include a pool, steam room and well equipped fitness suite. Staff were friendly and helpful. Tea and coffee freely available, likewise Wi-Fi. Good location, clean and pleasant. Recommended. If this review was helpful, please be kind enough to click the button below.
Greeted by friendliness and warmth. The hotel in general and our room was clean. Our room was warm and inviting. Breakfast was offered and we were offered to use the pool, said no as we wanted to see as much of York as possible with staying just one night. The mini bar in the cellar is cosy. All the staff were friendly and talkative. Car park to rear of hotel. Overall- clean, friendly people and a lovely place to stay.
Booked 2 double rooms for one night. Lady on reception was lovely and friendly and booking in was very quick. Rooms were lovely and clean and very large with a flat screen TV, kettle and plenty of tea, coffee and milk. We used the swimming pool that needed to be booked, so you could have it for your own use. It was lovely and warm and the sauna was great too. Breakfast was cooked to order and was beautiful, plenty of toast and as much tea and coffee as you could drink. The hotel isn't in the centre of York which we loved, however, it was only a short walk to the bars and restaurants and a great hotel if your going to the races. We would definitely stay here again.
Stayed for two nights very friendly staff nothing too much trouble for them, outside a little shabby as some building work at the back of the property but overall enjoyable stay only about 8 mins to nearest shops and about 15 minutes to York city so walkable no need to use car
Nice little hotel which was comfortable. Our room was big compared to other Best Westerns I've been in because it is family run so not just a big faceless hotel. Lady on reception was friendly as was the lovely lady at breakfast each morning. So happy. Pool area was nice and clean with a small gym area too. The only grumble I have was that I booked via the Best Western website and had sent an email to the hotel asking about parking because once booked a message told me about building work and that there may not be any space. I wanted to check this and was advised there would be no problem (which there wasn't space wise) but the hotel had not mentioned that parking would be £15 a day until we arrived and had to pay! Once in our room there was an information sheet that told me that parking was free if booked in advance direct with hotel otherwise there was a charge. I'd have thought me emailing to ask about parking that the person replying would have mentioned the charge!!! So bit cross we had to pay £30 when expecting free parking. This hotel is out of the city with a 20 minute walk into the centre and I had looked for a hotel with parking as don't mind the walk.
Nice rooms and food. Lovely swimming pool and steam room Friendly and helpful staff. Would stay again. Its not in a central location as its about a 20 to 25 minute walk to the centre, slightly less for restaurants, however, there are regular buses.
Stayed here and paid a small fortune, I called ahead as there was issues being there early to be told the door locks at 10 and that we might not be able to check in which is ridiculous for how much we were being charged. On arrival the room was boiling hot as someone had removed the head off the radiator, being a plumber I fixed this and turned the radiator off, opened the windows but no air coming in to the room for at least 2 days. Wallpaper was hanging off in our room, the bed was rock hard and the pillows were so uncomfortable and were really old by the bobbling to the cover on them. Mentioned all of this in the morning to reception on check out who said she hadn't seen the manager to speak to but I had seen him walking round and talking to her in the kitchen so it could have been mentioned. Was told to email best western who would then contact the manager. It was all very
Always love staying in this hotel. The staff make the visit really enjoyable, so friendly and helpful. The breakfast is the best and having a great swimming pool and steam room makes it the perfect place to stay. Also in walking distance from the centre of York.
Had a three night stay. delighted. lovely comfortable, homely hotel. Edwardian/Victorian building, with modern additions. rooms large and comfy. ensuite bathrooms beautiful. excellent shower. Chris, the manager, really welcoming and charming, with a sense of humour. All the staff were kind, considerate and caring. Nothing too much trouble. Breakfast great. Plenty of it and multiple choices. we were made very welcome. we enjoyed our stay. not far from city centre. walkable. We wish Chris all the best for the future and many thanks for a lovely stay.
Due to Covid we decided to honeymoon in York as we love it there. We had previously stayed here the year before and decided to stay again in the second part of our honeymoon. Once again it was great. The staff (sorry I can't remember all your names) were brilliant. It's great to see people who are happy at their work. We even got a free upgrade. The upgraded room was outstanding and made our stay even better. Hopefully we will visit again very soon and will definitely book into the Killima. Best to book direct for the best rates. See you soon guys.
Service at this hotel is great, the staff are very friendly and helpful. Everything is explained to you and they want to help with anything. Close to the city centre and nice amenities. Comfy bed and a nice place to just get your head down. Would stay again.
The staff are exceptionally helpful and friendly. Family room was a really good size and the kids loved the pool. It could probably do with a bit of an update in the decor, best western should probably invest In a bit of an update but this did not detract from what is a really well run hotel
Stayed for a couple of nights catching up with family, staff are amazing as is the breakfast, bed was super comfy. It's an old building rooms are a little tired but has lots of character, wouldn't hesitate to stay again.
Nice pretty small hotel just outside the center at a bit less than 10 minutes walk away from the Railway Museum. We stayed two nights (2 adults and 3 kids) and this is the evaluation: Pros: Quite good location; Nice old style building; Friendly staff; Indoor swimming pool (we did not use it); Spacious room. Cons: Renovation required. No hot/cold water mixer in the bathroom sink; Pieces of forniture damaged; no shower cubicle. Breakfast 10£ for each adult was average and nothing special or attractive (no buffet). Parking place not included (£10 a day). No attention to details. In conclusion is an average three star hotel that deserved a three star review and that costs like a 4 star one (It is quite expensive: £325 a night for the big room (2 adults and 3 small kids) including cancellation fees + additional costs for breakfast and parking).
This is a nice place to stay. I arrived a bit later than recommended and was accommodated. Always nice for the staff to look out for their guests like that. The rooms are spacious and clean. It is nicely located close to the trains.
Very enjoyable stay at the Kilima - good location as we were going to York Races on the Friday which is just round the corner - rooms comfortable and clean, if a little dated - breakfast good - Chris the Manager and the other Staff excellent
This hotel was perfect for my two day stay. A 25 minute walk and you are in the town. Staff were brilliant. The beds are really comfortable and the room was quiet and warm. Really good shower too. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay and would highly recommend this hotel.
We recently stayed at the Kilima Best Western. It is lovely hotel with a nice relaxed atmosphere. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The pool area is great and the breakfast is very tasty. Good location with a handy bus service right outside.
Excellent service and very friendly helpful staff. Our room was very comfortable and clean. The breakfast was made to order and plentiful tea and coffee available. The staff couldn't have been nicer and all your dietary requirements were met.
I payed £470 for two nights with breakfast. The hotel room was very tired looking, outdated.. bit like staying at your mans with dark furniture, paint chipping off the bathroom door, the bed felt like sleeping on a hill ! There was dirty bedding behind the bathroom door on arrival. We used the bar first night but didn't feel comfortable pressing a bell to get receptionist to run down stairs and pour a drink. Nice guy though! I only ever stay in Best Western plus and this has to be the worst and most expensive. A positive point though, breakfast was lovely!
All the staff were very friendly and polite. The hotel was comfortable and ideally situated for the city, close enough to walk in, but far enough out of the city to remain quiet at night. Would recommend to anyone.
Booked to stay here for a one night on a Monday night.. we knew the rooms was abit dated from photos prior to visiting, however when we arrived and got shown to our room.. instantly got a smell of damp/mould then to enter the room and actually see mould on the walls, we didn't even take our clothes out the bags because they would stink ...raised the issue with the duty manager to be told there full & nothing they could do.. but she would speak to her manager.. who we then spoke to later ourselves who was dressed in shorts and t-shirt, wouldn't even know he was the manager .. so unprofessional. He then told us the same story that they was full and nothing could be done.. he didn't want to know basically as I can imagen they always get this complaint! After paying £110 on a MONDAY night feel really let down and robbed. If you are visiting York, please don't be tricked into the 4.5/5 star review on trip advisor and AVOID this hotel at all costs.. I wouldn't stay here again if you payed me £110!!
We stayed here for 4 nights and I mainly chose this hotel as it had an indoor pool, which is now open but with certain restrictions. My room on the ground floor was adequate but I feel that the rooms need a bit of a spruce up as the carpets, windows, furniture etc is looking a little tired. Also due to covid no housekeeping was carried out in the rooms, you have to make your bed and tidy up yourself and tea, coffee, loo rolls etc are outside in the corridor. while staying in other hotels I have had the use of a clock radio and a fridge but these are not available here. - I did like the nice big bath & shower and the Bayliss & Harding toiletries are nice. The building is an old rectory and it is deceiving from the front ! it is bigger than you think. We had a drink in the bar downstairs which adjoins the dining area and this may have been a cellar at one time.... We enjoyed our hearty breakfasts , you can have cereals, juice, yogurts, fry ups, veggy breakfast, toast etc and as much tea and coffee as you can put away. The staff are super friendly and cannot do enough for you. A special shout out to Mandy and Sue. I slept well too in my double bed apart from missing my own pillow! the hotel is a short hop from the city centre and bus & trains.
We needed a short break after a double bereavement this year, The staff were amazing, helpful, and welcoming, Room was spacious, bed very comfortable, Winderful pool, great breakfast with a waitress who was outstanding, Breakfast caters for every taste, attention to detail. We felt looked after, and it has been everything we needed, Loved it, Would return
Stayed for 2 night midweek break. Hotel staff friendly and helpful. Great breakfast. Very clean rooms and had excellent sleep in the large comfy bed. Could probably do with a bit of modernising but don't let this put you off. Would definitely go back.
Place is ok but in need of an update and refurb I'd say. Staff were polite and friendly enough but it could do with coming into this century a little. Didn't have the breakfast or use the pool.Convenient for the races I guess but I think I'd want to stay somewhere a little more modern next time.
Nice hotel if a little bit far out. Quirky and a bit old fashioned but good old fashioned service and a nice pool for the kids to enjoy! Great that the family room was a 2 bed suite this made things a lot more comfortable for us! Lovely staff at breakfast.
We spent two nights in this hotel. We are not fussy people and I have never put a review on before, but felt I had to. The hotel is extremely dated and needs urgently updated. The staff are lovely and will help with anything you need. The breakfast is lovely and the lady serving it was so friendly and lovely. We were so pleased it was only for 2 nights. Also it is alot further to walk into the centre of York. It's 1 and a half miles into the centre. It's a mile to the city walls. We like walking, but walked miles during our stay. We tried to book a taxi on the last night, but had to cancel as the traffic was so bad and ended up walking yet again!
We stayed for 3 nights in room 3 which had a 4 poster bed and 1960s decor. The room was sizeable and comfortable. The hotel was clean throughout. The pool is lovely. Staff were helpful and it was nice to have on site parking. It is a great location and within walking distance to the race course and town centre. Would recommend if you don't mind 1960s and we would stay again.
The hotel and the booking company I booked through miscommunicated, when I arrived, there was only 1 room instead of 2. This took up a lot of time in trying to resolve the issue.. around 3 hours from arrival, so half the night was wasted standing about a hotel reception - with my proof of reservation and payment which wasn't good enough. I had to pay for the room again and claim a refund. It was a farce. Customer services failed us on both sides. The hotel was clean. Location was good. Free on site parking. I didn't have time to see what the pool looked like, the room was like a sauna through the night - with the fan on and the dirty socks in the drawer was an unwanted extra. If the hotel is going to allow hotels.com to book its rooms, it should be prepared to deal with hotels.com when there are issues. It should never have become my issue to source a virtual payment card from them, it should have been yours. York is beautiful. The people are lovely. But I wouldn't stay here again.
Perfectly adequate for a one night stay in York - chosen for its relative proximity to the City centre (about a 20-30 minute walk) whilst offering on site car parking. Comfortable and clean - did not sample Breakfast (as charged extra)
Having stayed there last week, and a Job over running I stayed again. Great hotel with character. Lovey staff and a good breakfast. Room 15 was very nice. The sign could be a little more obvious as I drove past the first time!
Very disappointing. There was no evening meal available, the room ( 25) was rather dated and there was an unpleasant drainy smell in the bathroom. All in all, an expensive B & B. On the plus side, the staff were pleasant and helpful.
Lovely hotel with parking short walk from the City centre. Our bedroom was large with a very comfortable King size bed . Made use of the bar which was very reasonably priced and well stocked. Breakfast was lovely and freshly made . The hotel was Covid secure resulting in us feeling safe . We will definately make a return visit .
This was a weekend stay for a leisure activity that involved early mornings and late returns, so I did no more in the hotel than wash or sleep- no meals. It has tidy but tired decor and the single bed wasn't terribly comfortable . There was a nasty smell from the toilet when I came back late on my final evening- I duly reported it. Be aware that the staff take your temperature when you srrive- there are unnecessarily unfriendly notices announcing that if you "fail " the temperature test 3 times YOU WILL NOT BE ALLIWED IN. Not good to see at 11pm. All this would have been OK had I not been paying £80 a night. This may simply reflect the York "market " but the location isn't particularly good for the city centre (better for the station. ) So will perhaps try elsewhere next time.
Had a lovely overnight stay at this hotel about 20 minutes walk outside of the city walls. On arrival, we were met with a very warm welcome and Chris was extremely helpful throughout. The hotel is an old Victorian building so there are obvious signs of age but the decor is bright and warm, the bed was extremely comfortable and the rooms have everything you need. The full english breakfast was excellent and definitely left me full! There was also cereal, fruit and yoghurt on offer. The price for the night was quite steep for the location but I'd still recommend a stay here.
We had booked into this hotel for 4 nights with our friends and we were greeted by very friendly and efficient staff. Our room was superb - spacious and very clean. There was a cupboard with iron and ironing board and extra blankets. There was also a trouser press. There was a nice size desk and chair as well as 2 other chairs and a little table to sit and watch tv. There was a kettle and mugs with the note that tea, coffee, sugar, milk, stirrers and extra toilet paper was available in the communal area on the landing. We were advised that the room was not serviced whilst staying there but every morning cleaning items were left in the communal area to use. Bed was very comfortable. A hairdryer was provided. There was a bottle of shower gel and Baylis and Harding hand wash in the bathroom. Breakfast is served as a optional extra. There is a indoor heated pool where you can book hour long slots. There is a lounge area with a bar serving drinks. Parking is available at the back of the hotel - if you book the room directly with the hotel this is free but if you book your room through Booking.com there is a parking fee to pay. This hotel is very conveniently situated and is close to a number of restaurants and take-always and within easy walking distance into York town. Price was very reasonable. All staff were very friendly and accommodating . Highly recommend a stay at this hotel.
My husband and I stopped just for one night. We arrived early 5 hrs before check-in. We were allowed to park our car and our room was ready. The lady on reception was delightful, warm and friendly, a great reception. The room was clean, bed comfy and shower pressure great. There was an iron and hairdryer in room. Breakfast was cooked to order. All hotel staff were engaging and polite. Did not use pool so cannot comment on that. £125 for bed and breakfast and parking. Great position for races and town Will be back
.I've recently stopped at this hotel and was extremely disappointed by the stay. I had paid 528 for 3 nights (2 rooms). We had to leave early because of the state of the beds but have only been refunded one of the rooms for one of the nights. Both mattresses in both rooms had dips which had caused bad back ache to my dad and also my girlfriend. Both mattresses were also stained in urine. I was also disappointed with the fact the radiators were turned off so our rooms were cold on both nights. I was again disappointed by the attitude that the management took. Chris had obviously thought that refunding half the stay would be enough but we infact aren't stopping for the full stay so that would have had to be refunded anyway. I've stopped in a lot better for a lot less. The only redeeming factors were the none management staff and the breakfast.
Worst stay in our lives. If you go to Myrtle Beach and want a ocean front room please let us inform you of our experience at the Best Western ocean sands beach resort. It was horrendous. Room on day of arrival unavailable until at least early evening. Parking atrocious. House keeping unavailable. Never never will we go to this site again. We were staying in the penthouse, can you imagine what you will get if you stay here. Check all other places on the street. We are sure nothing can be as bad.
Spend 2 nights at this lovely well kept hotel, on arrival we were greeted by well experienced staff with a smile. The room was beautiful and staff couldn't do enough to adere to our needs. Considering the circumstances of covid 19. Everything in place to keep everyone safe. Hand sanitizer everywhere you went within hotel. Pool was lovely and warm and we booked it at night to have to ourselves for an hour. Obviously in normal circumstances you probably wouldn't get the chance but we did and we're so grateful. We were literally less than a 10 minute walk into town and there was also a bus stop literally just outside the hotel to take you into town if you didn't want to walk. We loved our stay here and would definitely be coming back to this hotel again in the near future.
Hotel was amazing, very clean, staff very friendly, phone plug next to the bed for once, the pool is nice and warm and parking is free if you pay direct and is cheaper! It was about a 15 minute walk to the centre of York which was great.
Loved the hotel, the rooms and the service. The only thing that wasn't so good was the bed. It looked lovely, four poster, but with every turn it squeaked down loud, it was impossible to sleep. Even the kids in the adjoining room were woken up by it. So didn't sleep much. Pool was lovely and warm, everything else was brilliant
We stayed on a saturday for one night in the Best Western Kilima hotel. The staff on reception are very friendly and check in was quick. The Hotel was geared for Covid. It was the 1st weekend of wearing a mask inside hand sanatiser was where youy came in. There was no tea and coffee in the room this was on the end of each floor where you helped yourself to what you needed. I think this was a good idea, at the time but most other places now have tea and coffee in the room.. We booked direct with the hotel. All they had left was a king size room. When we were shown to our room we asked if it was a kings size? The bed looked small. He advised us it was. (Having stayed in 2 more Best Western hotels since one double and one king this was not a king but a double) We are a little bit disappointed about this. The room was a decent size with a smart tv bath with shower. Iron and ironing board in the room, which is good. The hotel is an old building the rooms were nice and the decor allthough dated was in keep with the building. The day was very hot one. There was a fan in the room but it was only a desk fan. I'm not sure if in future whether air con can be fitted or if not whether a ceiling fan could be fitted? The hotel has a pool which we used and a decent size you booked a time slot and we were the only ones in. The hotel was around 15 to 20 mins walk into York. We enjoyed the walk and it shouldnt put anyone off from booking here. In the morning a mini breakfast was served. At the time this was included in the price. You booked a time and it was delivered to door you got either a bacon or cheese sandwich and some other goodies. It was a really nice touch. We would stay here again, even with the 3 star review. The bed was a dissapointment and the main reason for 3 rather than 4 star.
Visiting for the first time York, we wanted to be close to the city centre for the 3 days we've booked for. Very good location, only 12-15min to walk to city centre, there is a car parking at the back, £10/day, I think that it will be cheaper if you book directly with the hotel. Oliver made us the quick check in after taking us the temperature, very friendly person, he informed us about everything: breakfast, pool booking and then he showed us the room (number 11, ground floor) - very nice room, clean and really big, but try to avoid it if you would like to sleep after 6:30am. Being just behind reception, we could hear the conversations very early in the morning. After the 2nd morning, I called reception and Chris changed us the room (didn't look to be happy to do it), one upstairs, smaller but nice and quiet. Breakfast was good, we had hot bacon roll, an apple, a cereal bar and yogurt. After changing the rooms, we received cold breakfast the next morning. The pool was nice, we had to book for it at reception, but can't stay to long as the water is a bit cold. Next time we will think for another hotel.
Warm welcome and every member of staff we met was friendly and helpful. Hotel is well located just outside the main centre (15 minutes walk to train station), has on site car parking (free if you book direct with hotel) and the accommodation is clean, if somewhat dated. Our room (19) came with a large and comfy bed and a decent shower over the bath. However, the devil is in the detail; TV location was weirdly ‘off centre' (not facing the bed or chairs), kettle had seen better days and the bathroom toiletries were from Tesco, which along with toilet paper so thin it needed triple folding to be of any use and the absence of a bath mat – really let the side down in a room costing over £120 per night. Good bus links into town, the 1 and 5/5A offering regular service right through into the late evening. Richard & Elizabeth
The staff are very friendly and helpful. The decor is dated but rooms have character. Bed was comfy. Only a small window which had no view. Needed the lights on all the time as no natural light. About 15mins walk from town. Breakfast was a good idea and bacon roll tasty and hot. Just concerned about all the waste but it's the same everywhere because of COVID. The shower was great but the extraction fan went on for about 30 mins after light switched off. There was a fan in the room which we needed. Didn't use the pool. They let us leave car there on last day as we were still sightseeing, which was good of them as driving and parking seem very busy in York.
Very easy to find in an excellent location, depending on how quickly you walk 15mins into York. Our room was largewith en suite, the curtains shut properly to block out light and there was no noise disturbance.Breakfast was delivered to your door at your specified time, always hot and consisted of bacon or cheese bap(gluten free was no problem)juice, yoghurt, cereal bar, fruit. At certain points around the Hotel were stations where you could collect tea, coffee etc, kettles were still in room.No cleaning of rooms during your stay(obviously due to the current climate)but just ask for clean towels as required.
Stayed at this hotel for 2 day's after our holiday to The canaries was cancelled due to Covid, and all I can say this place made us feel So much better after the big disappointment of not going abroad, the rooms where lovely, the Covid measures where brilliant the gent on reception who checked us in and seemed to work all the time was absolutely lovely, he was so friendly felt like we had known him for years! And then there is the pool a swim in that after a loonnngg day walking round York made us both feel so much better, the web site says it is closed at the moment due to Covid however they are letting 4 people in at a time so you have to book to avoid disappointment. The hotel is about 15 mins walk to the centre of York and the parking is secure. Lovely hotel will defo stay again and would defo recommend!! Thank you very much!!!
We booked the Kilima for a long weekend with plans to use a car driving experience nearby and see some of York's attractions. We weren't disappointed - the hotel was a lovely old building (an ex rectory) and well appointed. The car park is big enough to not to have to worry about finding a space after a trip out, and the walk into York centre takes about 10-15 minutes along pleasant roads. The hotel itselfmay be slightly dated in terms of furnishings, but made up for it with cleanliness, service and everything else. Covid-19 precautions are in place with well organised systems for pool use (booked slots) and breakfast (delivered to your room door at chosen time), a one way system on the staircase and little need to be close to other guests. The manager/s were unfailingly hekpful and obliging and I'm sure could be relied upon to help if necessary.
We originally booked our stay for the May bank holiday - but due to Covid, we pushed back to the August bank holiday. Because we had booked directly with the hotel, we enjoyed free parking which was a real plus for us. We were greeted warmly at reception and it was reassuring that there was hand sanitizer at both the front door and reception, and that staff were tucked away safely behind a perspex screen. My husband had read a review that the swimming pool had to be be booked, and as a family of three we could enjoy the pool for an hour at a time. The hotel allows just 4 people at a time in the pool, or an absolute maximum of 8 people if they are all in the same bubble. We were able to book a swim for both the Saturday and Sunday - which our 10 year old was very excited about. Due to covid the bar closes at 10pm and the restaurant is currently closed, so a breakfast bap and assorted items are delivered to your door. We were given a ground floor room at the back of the hotel - the room was a lovely size with ample storage with iron / ironing board, fan, hairdryer. The bed was huge and comfy and not having any traffic noise, the sleep quality was outstanding. Breakfast was very nice and kept us going. There is only one family allowed to use the stairs at any one time to allow for social distancing. Staff were wonderful and Chris was only too happy to extend our room to allow us to squeeze in another swim - which was very much appreciated. Bathroom was clean, with ample hot water / towels and toiletries. With a bath and shower. A nice 10 - 15 walk into town - would definitely return and have already recommended this lovely hotel to friends. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Mini break in York, Hotel staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Breakfast was tasty and plentiful, very impressed with the service offered as the restaurant is closed. The room we had was clean and large. The only problems were the creeking of the floor and bed but it was manageable. Would definitely stay here again!
Friendly and helpful staff, everything is very well maintained and clean. This is so important right now. Great Breakfast delivered to room. Booking slot system for Swimming Pool works very well. Thank you so much i am so relaxed and ready for work :)
Just a overnight trip to show partner around York as she had never been before. To visit a few places I hadn't been to in 35yrs. Still a lovely place to visit and weather was on our side sunny for the 2 day there
We have just returned from a 2 night stay at this hotel and all four of us agreed it was a good stay. The hotel have clearly put a lot of effort into making themselves ready for business again after the lockdown. However, these new rules & regulations (that are obviously out of the hotel`s hands) did not have any detrimental effect on our visit. We were able have the swimming pool to ourselves for an hour (booked at reception), which was a nice temperature and well looked after. Because of the Covid situation, the breakfast room and bar / restaurant were closed during our stay. However a very good breakfast bag was delivered to each of our room`s doors in the morning, which certainly set us up for the day. We were also able to order drinks that were then delivered to the seating area near reception (or this could have been our room, if we wished). We could also help ourselves to as much tea & coffee we wanted from a central area near reception. The bedrooms we stayed in possibly could do with a little freshen up (particularly the bathrooms), but that said, they had plenty of room and comfortable beds. They also had all you need contained within them and were also very clean (as was the rest of the hotel). Kilima is in a good location, just 15 minutes or so walk into the City centre and the free parking was very useful. Thank you for a pleasant stay, which we all enjoyed. I`m sure we will return. Regards from Gill, Oliva, Beth and me!
My husband and I booked a last minute trip to York with our 1 year old! Could not have been happier with our choice of hotel. The staff were exceptionally friendly, helpful and careful. We absolutely loved the pool as did the wee man! A whole hour a day with essentially a private pool to himself. The location was spot on a nice easy walk into town and back. I LOVED my breakfast in a wee bag delivered in the morning! Seriously nice bacon sandwiches ! Would recommend for anyone
Nice hotel good location for city centre The staff were lovely the chap that checked us in was really helpful and cheerful We had a suite which was a great surprise the rooms are fully equipped iron hairdryer trouser press etc Because of the Covid breakfast was delivered to the room at the chosen time with a lovely little good morning handwritten on the bag all in all a good hotel oh and with a swimming pool
3-6 August 2020 Given the times we are in kilima Hotel York are doing a fantastic job taking in guests. As you would expect limitations are in place to protect guests and staff all in keeping with government guidance. Breakfast in bag is an acceptable way given these limitations. Clean and ready to accept guests enjoyed my 3 days and my thanks to management and staff for doing their best hope everything returns to normal for all of us ASAP.
We booked for one night to have a night out in York. Rooms clean and spacious, no complaints there! Staff are friendly, knowledgable and happy to give advice! Complimentary breakfast was very much welcomed! We had booked through lastminute.com, but didn't realise we had to pay £10 for parking (which was the reason for the 4* rating, otherwise it would have been a 5!) complimentary tea, coffee, and toiletries were available, not in the rooms but on stations on the landings which worked really well! We enjoyed our nights stay, thank you!
We stayed there for the weekend with our little one. The family room on the ground floor is really large. It had three beds, two next to each other forming a "King" bed, and the third separate. Due to Covid-19, no cooked breakfast was served, but we were provided with a packed one with a breakfast bar, yogurt, a cheese and tomato sandwich (but you could have a ham one) which was really fresh. They leave it outside your door at the time you decide. There's a kettle in the room, but because of covid-19 tea, coffee, UHT milk, sugar and biscuits are left outside in the hall for the guests to take from whenever they needed to. The same place also had the shower gel. Again, due to covid-19, there's no room service, which is perfectly understandable. There's a nice swimming pool which the little one just loved. Again, due to covid-19, you had to book a one hour slot in the pool in advance, which meant we had the pool for one whole hour for ourselves! The two chaps at the reception, one on each shift, were really nice and helpful. The only slight problem we had was when some people moved in on Saturday, apparently with a lot of children, as they kept slamming the doors, which was a bit annoying. This is the only reason I'm not giving it 5, probably unfairly because it's not the hotel's fault but the guests'.
The staff were so friendly and accommodating during our stay at the hotel. They catered to our every need and even allowed us to change rooms (as a neighbouring room had a very loud snorer in there!). The situation was quickly dealt with so thank you. Location wise, it's perfect for walking into York (10-15 mins) however, it's situated in a quieter part of the city- so you don't get road traffic noise etc. Rooms were clean and spacious. Would just like to thank the staff again for being great hosts, delivering breakfast to the door and just in general for being so lovely.
Upon being directed into my room my first things that caught my attention were the old fashioned decor and the smell of lavender which took me back to stepping into my grandparent's house many moons ago. That said for less than £80 a night, half a mile from the centre of York with full breakfast, a couple of complimentary biscuits and parking thrown in; you'll struggle to find many hotels that can match it for value. The old room was gigantic which was in stark contrast to the Hobbit micro-bathroom. I'm 5'5 (and thats a generous estimate) but was struggling to have a shower underneath the pitched ceiling to the bathroom extension. No doubt any person without stunted growth would have to settle for a bath. The dining area was very quiet which made for a very relaxed and lesiurely breakfast.
Lovely hotel, really pleasant staff, great breakfast and nice to have a swimming pool. It was just a shame that it was not mentioned that the steam room was out of action. It's a 10-15 minute walk to town or £5 in a taxi.
Lovely hotel with friendly host. We enjoyed the pool to relax after a busy day in York. Only a 10 minute walk into town. Great rooms, clean, spacious with smart tv. Breakfast was delicious with lots of choice.
We stayed for one night after we decided to spend the day in York, cheap and cheerful. Hubby enjoyed using the pool in the morning and the welcome on arrival and service from lady on reception and bar was great. We stayed in room 1, I wouldn't recommend this room as it's right outside the cupboard that the housekeeping team use so was quite loud in the morning, also had to pay to park at the hotel, hotel kindly called us to let us know we had left a charger which we went back for. Good stay overall (friendless of staff made the stay)
My husband Gaz and I decided on a few days stay in York and chose the Kilima for the second time. We were not disappointed, lovely room and great breakfasts again. Friendly and helpful staff everyday, cannot fault anything so would definitely recommend this hotel especially its location and safe parking, thanks again, will certainly be rebooking at sometime for another visit.
Thanks to the girl at breakfast and the manager for making our stay so comfortable, lovely charming hotel, old house with a modern makeover.hand pulled beers in the bar , very close to town so a great location.
The hotel is located about 1.3 miles from The Minster (about a 25 minute walk), but has onsite parking (charged at £5 per night) and a cheap (£1.20) and regular bus service into town. The staff were very friendly, efficient and accommodating. The rooms are a little on the tired side, but clean. The pool (which opens from 7am in the morning) was an added bonus and a reasonable size.
We stayed here for the first time on Sunday and Monday this week, very handy for a good walk into the city of York, very clean and good breakfast. Cost of parking a-bit hidden but £5 a day is a lot cheaper than most in York area. We loved having the good sized swimming pool to ourselves shame the steam room was broken. All in all a great place for a quiet break with a bit of exercise in pool and stroll into the city, to burn off that great brekkie.
Me and my partner stayed here for a night and it was lovely. The staff were very friendly and informative. The rooms were very clean and looked nice. I didn't use the pool but my partner said that it was a decent size for a good swim. It is about a 15-20 minute walk from the centre. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
We had 2 nights here before our train trip on the NMYR. Our twin room was quiet even being on the ground floor next to the stairs. Room was clean although on day 2 our bed hadn't been made up properly. There was a lack of storage space for razors, tooth brushes etc in the bathroom. That said the bathroom did have a bath which was a bonus. Car parking at the hotel was free because we booked directly with the hotel. Breakfast had many choices and was served at your table. we travelled into York by bus the stop being across from the hotel with a very frequent service, it took 10 mins. You could walk it in about 20 mins. All in all a very comfortable stay and would stay again. The hotel has just changed ownership, and I believe alterations are afoot next year.
I cannot praise the staff in this hotel enough. They were very welcoming, helpful, friendly nothing was too much trouble. The breakfast was ok but nothing special. Rooms a bit dated but clean. Nice 20 min walking into city centre. Would stay here again though.
We have stayed at the Kilima previously so we knew it was perfectly located for the markets, etc, just a 15 minute walk to town. On the way to town, you pass lots of little quirky pubs, cafes, restaurants, that you would miss if you stayed in the main town. We did a little put crawl and had a great night. I can't fault the hotel at all. The room was lovely (217) and quiet and spotless. Plenty of tea/coffee/etc in the room. There is also a table in reception with extra supplies which is a lovely touch (there's a box to put a donation in). The staff are so welcoming and friendly. You really couldn't ask for more. We only stayed one night, but wished we had booked for two as there was so much to see with the markets, etc. We didn't use the leisure facilities this time as we were too busy. The breakfast was very nice. The dining area is so light and welcoming and the bar area is very cosy. The fire alarm went off at tea time when my husband was in the shower so we had to go outside and wait for the fire brigade (NO FIRE!). Heather who was on reception was marvellous, so professional and efficient. She even brought her own coat out for a young girl to put on. I don't think we would stay anywhere else when we visit again as this Hotel fits our needs perfectly.
Well, what a night, staying here for the week, we've got the storms outside and all of a sudden it's like the roof has come of the building and its raining inside. Not making a complaint as this had nothing to do with the staff...... What I am saying is what a team Best Western had on staff duty tonight, from the young lady organizing everything, to the maintenance team assisting and the customers accepting the situation with what I can only call the Dunkirk spirit to understand the staff's situation or offering assistance. I'm a Building Services Engineer and have seen the devistation water can cause in those volumes.... The duty staff need medals for the way they dealt with a horrendous situation to protect both guests and the business of Best Western, as well as this lovely building.... Very well done.
Can't recommend this hotel enough. We go every year at Christmas and would be so disappointed if they were fully booked. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the hotel is clean and reasonably priced.
Just left this hotel where we stayed for two nights to visit the Christmas markets and do some shopping with our daughters, firstly the manager I think he is Chris was fantastic so friendly and welcoming and a bloody hard worker, he allowed us to leave our car as we went to the railway museum which is well worth a visit too, the breakfast was excellent and the staff were so friendly, nice little bar and some trivia games left for people to make use of, we did not use the pool so can't comment, the rooms were lovely bit dated bathroom but spotless, overall lovely hotel within walking distance but what really sells it is the manager and staff
Very enjoyable, one night stay. Staff were polite, friendly and helpful. Very good breakfast. Location excellent with large car park a bonus for this area. On direct bus route into York centre which was only 15 minute walk away.
I stayed here for several nights with my husband and son, in a King Room. We were greeted warmly on arrival and were pleasantly surprised at the standard of the room - clean, warm, cosy and quiet. The beds were really comfy and the power shower was great! The hotel has a lovely lounge area, and the basement bar was snug and relaxing (card and quiz games provided were a nice touch too). We used the swimming pool, which was great. We would like to mention the lovely staff, who were attentive, really friendly and a real credit to the hotel. The manager, Chris, was easy going, helpful and funny (in a good way!) The hotel is in a good location and easy to reach (I've been lost in the city centre many a time), plus easy to walk or bus into the centre. Thanks Best Western Kilima for a lovely stay, we look forward to next time.
Have stayed here a few times for business. Located about 10 minutes walk to centre of York which has loads to offer for visitors. Hotel provided everything required for my stay. Full English breakfast was good, staff friendly and helpful. Room I had was large as I was upgraded, being a Best Western Rewards member- decor a little dated would be my only comment.
Me and my husband came here for a break, it was my birthday and our anniversary and wanted to explore York, the hotel was very clean and the staff were very friendly and welcoming, I thought it was a lovely touch they posted a birthday/anniversary card through the door for us, we made use of their heated indoor swimming pool every morning and was mostly the only people using it was was lovely. The beds are very comfortable too, we had room 24 which had a lovely deep bath, I'd highly recommend staying here, if you book directly with the hotel they don't charge you for parking either which is £5 a day xxx
The service and facilities at this hotel are very good. The staff were very professional and helpful. The swimming pool, steam room and gym were a nice added bonus and the breakfast was excellent. I have stayed at this hotel whilst on business several times and have never been let down. The location of the hotel is also a perfect base from which to explore York on foot. All in all I would recommend this hotel for business and social stays alike.
Good points - Breakfast freshly cooked to order, good selection. Swimming pool nice. Bed comfortable. Bad points - bathroom very cramped. Wifi poor - kept dropping out. Steam room - not working properly, no steam - just a slightly warm cupboard really. Gym small and limited. Summary - quaint old fashioned hotel. Some nice touches but needs a bit of modernisation in places.
We were checked in by Chris who got the stay off to a great start with his friendly manor plus his helpful and jokular information. The Hotel is well located for a walk into the city centre which takes 10 minutes or so. The Hotel is rated as a three star but we thought it was better than that. The Hotel really 'over' delivers. The pool was great, 10m x 5m x 1.5 deep, and we had a very enjoyable afternoon swim. The room was clean and the beds comfy. Breakfast was also good and with parking on site (plenty of spaces) at £5 per day, this is the Hotel we will stay at next time we visit York.
Second time at the Kilima hotel and I wasn't disappointed. Great location, lovely comfortable ensuite rooms with a fabulous shower. Brilliant breakfast which is freshly cooked and most importantly fantastic staff.
Old style and furniture not match each other. Dusty. For a person who is an allergic to dust is a nightmare. Cobweb on the sealing. Dust in the bathroom. And also tok hot. Temperature was about 25-27 degrees with radiators off and opened window for a whole night in october.
Stayed at this hotel for a long weekend in September. Excellent location for York City Centre with parking on site. Breakfast was excellent and plenty of variety. Staff friendly. Swimming pool lovely and clean and at the time we went to the pool quiet. We would definately recommend this hotel and we will be back soon.
Stayed here for a couple of nights at the start of September, and had a lovely time. Convenient location for a good 10-15 minute walk into the centre of town. Staff were all really friendly and pleasant. Rooms spotless and comfortable, maybe need a little updating but no complaints from us. Was great to have the pool and steam room on site which we made use of every morning. Haven't given 5 stars as we didnt try the food on site as we walked into York to eat, but we really enjoyed our stay there and would use again.
We stayed here for 3 nights recently. As we were early we asked if we could leave our car on the car park while we walked into the city. We were given a map and a route was suggested taking in the city walls from Micklegate. It would usually take between 20 and 25 minutes but we kept stopping and looking at the buildings and the views etc. Our room was a four poster bed at the front of the hotel, there is no lift . If you are a light sleeper I would suggest you ask for a room at the back as there was still traffic passing at 3 am. The breakfast room is down another flight of stairs, good choice on the menu with help yourself cereals and toast and cooked breakfast done to order. The pool looked very inviting and well looked after. The staff were all extremely friendly and made us feel welcome. All communal rooms were well furnished and our room was spotless. The heating was working so we were able to put it on after a shower. The car park is free for those who book direct with the hotel otherwise there is a charge of £5 per day. They have stopped serving three course dinners now but there are bar snacks available, though there are plenty of restaurants around.we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in York
Lovely property 15m walk from York city centre. Room 27 was large and bright. We did enjoy our stay in this property. Coming from busy London is what we were looking for a relaxing weekend in this beautiful city. Staff and manager very friendly and willing to help. Thank you Silvio
We recently had a lovely stay at this hotel for two nights and we definitely stay here again if we come to York. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Our room was nicely decorated, spacious and very clean. There was a good selection at breakfast and the food was very tasty. Our only little moan about our room is that there was a continuous low buzzing/humming day and night coming from the outside of the hotel just down from our room window (maybe an air conditioning unit or from the pool) this didn't spoil our stay but we did think some people could be bothered by this (obviously would depend where your room is). We felt the hotel was in a good location just a short walk to the centre and it was great the hotel has a carpark however we do not think when you are paying for accommodation you should have to pay extra for parking in the hotel carpark.
Came home today after a two night stay here. Great location for racecourse and York centre, a bus runs regularly across the hotel if the distance is a stretch for some. Hotel was clean, comfortable and the Staff are lovely, especially the gentleman on reception when we checked in late on Saturday night !!! Breakfast was fabulous thank you we will return ! Only negative was the £5 charge a day for parking here it's not a lot but feel residents shouldn't have to pay !!!
I can't praise the staff of this hotel enough, from my initial conversation with Chris to the front of house staff, breakfast waiters/waitresses and the housekeeping staff. Every single person we encountered were friendly, professional and informative. The facilities were great for us as a family of 3 - especially the pool. The rooms although slightly dated (which was expected and in keeping with the hotel) were clean and spacious. The location was fantastic with only a short walk to the main attractions. Can't wait to visit again with my Mum. Thank you for making our stay so enjoyable - and i never write reviews!
The staff here are very friendly and helpful. My wife and I used the pool and sauna facilities and were impressed. The dinner was basic but a good meal. The only down was how hard the bed was but to their credit they moved us the second night where we were happy with.
Really great hotel. Really friendly welcome on arrival. Good carpark. The swimming pool was fantastic (good size, clean and well cared for). Steam room nice addition too. The restaurant was also clean, well cared for and a lovely space. Breakfast was hot and delicious. Highly recommended.
A slightly older style but stylish hotel. Plenty of parking, great pool, gym & steam room. Food was great albeit slightly limited choice. As an old property there are lots of stairs but no lift so best check with reception when booking. Room 11 recommended as biggest family room. Staff were wonderful. Really comfortable beds and very clean. Will stay again.
I Stayed at the BW Kilma Hotel for a weekend. I was a solo traveler. My room was a double and had plenty of room. The bed was comfy and the room was clean. There is a TV, Tea/Coffee making facilities and plenty of plug sockets for charging phones etc. The room was furnished in keeping with the age of the hotel and I had a 4 poster bed, which was different. my only issue with the room, was the that the floor boards were very creaky when you walked on them, but that was not a major issue. My room overlooked the main road, but there were no issues with the noise. The Bathroom was a good size and had a Bath/Shower. Breakfast was ok, with a choice of cereals, fresh fruit etc and then the choice of cooked breakfast, which was nice. Staff were friendly and helpful. I did not use the pool, so can not comment on this. I walked to the train station in approx 10/15mins and it was about the same to get into town. There is a bus stop outside the hotel. If i was in York again, I would consider staying at the Kilma again. Although, it is not cheap, it was cheaper than all of the big chain hotels that i have stayed in before and the standard was on par with most of them.
Drove down from Scotland for 3 nights. Really enjoyed staying at this hotel...Room 5 was very nicely decorated, clean and with fresh towels etc every day. The Public areas of the hotel were bright, airy and well presented. We found the staff, without exception to be friendly, cheerful and happy to help. My wife made use of the pool, which she enjoyed very much. The hotel itself is located about 15 or 20 minutes walk from the City Centre, but it's a pleasant enough walk. Alternatively, buses stop very frequently just across the road and charged £1.10 to the centre of town. There is an off road car park behind the building, though we didn't drive anywhere during our stay....York isn't a car friendly city, thankfully, and seems all the better for it. Lots of cyclists and adequate public transport. Very refreshing indeed. There is so much to see in York, that four days barely scratches the surface.....we will be back and more than happy to stay at The Kilima again.
We had originally booked for two nights here for our visit to York, but had to cut short for just one night. Reservations very kindly sorted out a good rate for us, as we had unknowingly booked during the races! This hotel is a perfect base if you are looking to explore the city. Parking is included and we walked everywhere! All staff are very friendly and willing to help. Breakfast was delicious, with plenty of choice both on the buffet and freshly cooked from the kitchen. The room was comfy, cosy and had everything we needed. If there was anything we had forgotten, reception have it all! We will definitely be returning to explore some more and we will be staying here again. (I would recommend booking direct!) Thank you for a wonderful stay.
We stayed for two nights when visiting York. The location is good, in a nice quiet area with a 10-15 minute walk to the walls. The car park was our main reason for choosing this hotel and there were plenty of spaces with nice sized bays. All the staff were very friendly and the bar and breakfast room in the basement were lovely. Our room was a good size with a very comfortable bed. There was everything you could need and it was nice to see such a generous selection of tea and coffee stuff, with extras available in reception - never understand why hotels scrimp on this. The swimming pool was an added bonus, not huge but big enough to have a good swim, there is also a steam room. All in all the hotel had a lovely ambience and we wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.
Staff are great. Hotel lovely and quirky in a beautiful old building and very handy for town. Breakfast a pleasant experience. The pool although small is rented out for kids classes. Morally wrong when guests are paying too! A parent tried to discourage us from going in. Claimed the classes take up the entire pool! Luckily we didn't fall for this and staff helpful when we complained. But regardless of this it's unfair to run classes when people generally use a hotel pool to relax and the space is limited. I would highly recommend the hotel if you aren't bothered about using the pool because the staff are fantastic and it's a lovely building. Room 27 is great
A fair distance from the city centre but still walkable. Price reasonable. Parking charge £5 per day if not booked directly with hotel Rather old building with no elevator. Sink has 2 separate cold and hot outlet which was rather ancient and inconvenient
Best Western Hotel which is also part of The Classic hotels chain. We booked because we used one of the other hotels in that booklet which was great. Hotel clean and tidy, main lounges and dining room ok. Breakfast is a fair bit of do it yourself. You want toast, there is the bread and toaster. You want coffee other than filtered, there's the machine. You want milk for your tea - it's on the table with the juices - are you getting my drift. Phoned down to order a paper " we don't do that " . Evening meal, forget it, extremely limited menu so we walked down the road to an Italian which was very good.. Swimming pool looked good but we didn't use it. Super location tor the city, 20 minutes walk or you can hop on a bus opposite hotel.
We chose this hotel for its location to the city. It was directly opposite the bus stop and within easy walking distance of the city (15 min walk) We used it as a base for my daughters University visit and city visit. The staff were so friendly and helpful, nothing was to much trouble, well done to all the staff at Kilima The pool was spotlessly clean, and enjoyable. Well worth a visit, for York and the surrounding area. Also, the notices in the hotel suggested contacting them direct for the best deals rather than through an online booking. Good tip! Well done.
Well located hotel (15 wlik to the walls), profeesional staff, beautiful rooms, clean and well appointed. Staff were extremely friendly and heplful. Room 20 - 4 poster bad, so so comfortable...Would definately stay here again. If you dont book direct you will be charged £5 to park.....
We have just returned from a 2 night stay at the Kilima hotel. The building is old and full of character, yet has a swimming pool, steam room and small gym, not that you need the gym if taking the 20 minute walk into the city centre. Our room was a good size with large bed, two chairs, table and small flat screen TV. The room was clean, the only issue being the coffee cups and spoons one of which had sticky sugar residue on it. We didn't eat at the hotel other than breakfast, but a bar menu was available to be taken the bar / restaurant in the cellar. Breakfast was very good with a buffet choice of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, fruit bread and something I have never seen in a hotel, crumpets. Cooked breakfasts were made to order with quality and portion sizes just right. The beauty of staying in a hotel just away from the city centre is the peace and quiet, the clientele were respectful of other guests making for an undisturbed nights sleep. Another benefit is the private car park, free if you book direct with the hotel, not the Best Western web site. All the staff we met were friendly and professional. We would definitely recommend the Kilima, and will return on our next stay in York.
Stayed for two nights with friends in family room. Room was spacious, beds comfy with plenty of spare pillows. Bathroom nice ( bit difficult to get in shower as bath quite high). Tea and coffee in room are plentiful. Tv good size. Staff are excellent. Breakfast good. Evening menu is limited and they didn't have what we wanted available on our first night. Swimming pool good size and pool area very clean. Would recommend this hotel. One more thing to point out is that they say town is 15 minute walk away and it took me 25 minutes ( and I walk fast). Hotel is also on slight hill so probably town not walkable for people who have difficulty, taxi cost around £6 into city centre
Stayed at the Best Western Kilima Hotel for 4 nights, The hotel was a 15 mins walk to start of inner city limits. The hotel it's self isold worldy, we stayed in room 25, it was cleam tidy with all the usual hotel amenties, the bed was extreamly comfortable, the room was on the dark side as the trees on the outside of the hotel restricted natural light.
This Best Western Hotel is really easy to find, and within walking distance of the city. We booked direct, and as result, got free car parking. We arrived early and as expected, our room was not ready. Reception were happy that we left the car and strolled into the city. It's about 10 mins very gentle stroll to city wall, then follow road straight down to river, and old pedestrian area. For a fab meal in the vicinity of hotel, turn right, follow Holgate Rd to its junction with Blossom St, as if heading to city, then immediately right, and two doors up on right is Valentino's Italian. The food is awesome! Not tried it, but Lo Spuntino (left onto Blossom St) has an excellent reputation. There is a small Sainsbury on left, a little further on for supplies. A bit further, on same side, JUST before you get to the Wall, is Caffe La Tazzina. (Closed Mon and Tues). Superb lunch and glass of wine. Not expensive. On last morning after check out, again no problem with leaving car and strolling back to City. The staff at this hotel are genuine friendly Yorkshire folk who are happy to go the extra mile. I would recommend it without hesitation if you are looking for mid range accommodation and a hearty breakfast to set you up for a day's shopping and sightseeing.
It is what it says. Had the small pool to myself. Staff were very friendly and helpful. A shame it was the opposite way from the railway station than the town. But easy walk and buses Only negatives were that the floors creaked so could hear people walking around and talking
Impromptu booking, opportunity to catch up with a friend and just googled availability of a twin room in York and came across the Killima hotel.Fabulous little place, from our arrival we were made to feel very welcome. All the staff were lovely and we felt 'at home".Feeling very comfortable to make coffee in the room and then enjoy it on the lovely little terrace and have a catch up on what we had both been upto in recent months to using the pool and steam room to refresh from the "morning sfter the night before' feeling,we were so happy with our stay. We both have busy lives ,living in different towns and when chance comes for a get together would not hesitate to return to the Killima. Thanks guys.Loved our stay.
The staff are very nice, but if you are booking this hotel based on spa and gym, please bring breathing apparatus. The gym is in a small room in basement and stinks !!!! Rooms are big enough but dated
First time at a Best Western, have stayed in a good hotels for work + family leisure. For 2 nights (£437 family room exc breakfast) really was expecting more. Positives - good location short walk to centre. Rear Parking (at £5 extra per night), warm welcome by receptionist + fast check in. Clean and tidy large family room. Beds comfy. Nice indoor Pool, although we didn't use it. Room dull and dated, in need of upgrade. We have stayed at the Hilton Cambridge couple of times, few London hotels + other areas. For the money really not worth what we paid. Was Expecting a lot better.
We stayed at the hotel on Friday and Saturday nights of Bank Holiday weekend as we were attending York Races on Saturday. Hotel was clean tidy with free parking as I booked direct with them.Room was a little on the small side but was on the ground floor(16) which was great for me as I am having a bit of trouble with the old knees at the moment and stairs can be hard.We have stayed here before and once again ALL staff we warm, friendly and nothing was a bother.breakfast was cooked fresh to order and was very tasty help yourselves to toast/tea or coffee.Bed was Huge and comfortable.Hotel is on a bus route straight to city centre or walking would take about 20mins this is a really nice friendly hotel and I would recommend to anyone.
I booked direct with the Hotel for three nights during the week . After other comments on TripAdvisor this meant I received free parking in the substantial car park at the rear of the Hotel. Also I do not thing any other booking site could have given me a better deal. From the booking process to the reception/Bar/Dining/breakfast staff the service was excellent, very friendly and you got the impression that nothing would be too much trouble to help you enjoy your stay at the Hotel. Lovely freshly cooked breakfast with cereals and fruits available. We stayed in and dined on the first night and the food was excellent. Leisurely stroll into York centre about 25 minutes. Also we visited Harrogate which is only 25 miles away about 40 mins in the car. Mid week was quiet mainly business travellers and couples. Bedroom was spacious and ensuite was fine. Lovely bar area in the basement alongside the dining area. I would stay here again if I visited York
Decided to spend a few days in York for my husbands birthday. A colleague my husband works with had previously mentioned they had stayed there so we thought we would give it a try. It is a lovely characterful hotel, we had a nice big room with en-suite bathroom, TV, tea and coffee facilities with full WiFi access throughout. Steady 20-30 min walk into the city centre which was great. Breakfast was plentiful, lots of choice in a lovely restaurant in the cellar. We enjoyed a swim and visit to the steam room all included in the price. All the staff were helpful and very friendly. We shall definitely be returning (booking direct with the hotel as then get free car parking) and would certainly recommend it. Thanks for a lovely stay.
Stayed here for one night and from checking in to leaving the staff were brilliant, nothing was too much trouble for them .Aways polite and Chris the manager was great even working on his birthday !!! The room was just what we wanted a four poster, clean and the breakfast was very good. Walking into York took 10-15 mins. There are plenty of pubs and eateries on the walk into York from the hotel. The only thing that we didn't try was the swimming pool. We went for my birthday and tried a Brazilian restaurant on Micklegate called Vaqueiros very good. Will definitely stay at the hotel again. If you are considering a stay here book directly with the hotel and the parking is free. If you book online via a site there is a parking fee.
Stayed at the best western Kilima while working in the area . A nice hotel with a nice breakfast . Big rooms comfy beds and a pool and a small fitness room . Reasonable rates . You have to pay £5.00 per day parking at the hotel which was ok . Don't park at the very bottom of the car park or the wood pigeons do a messy covering on your car Like they did on mine
Manager made us very welcome on arrival. Handy for many reasons: comfy room, great shower, lovely pool, on-site parking (small charge) and only 20 minutes walk to town centre. Didn't hear a thing during the night despite being in a city. Super-fast WiFi added bonus for the teen; I was happy with the kettle, telly and tea bags! Would definitely consider a return visit, not least for the amusing decor of the bedroom (not quite matching: a bit old fashioned). Would have liked free parking considering the price I paid for room only, but manager said he'd give me a discount next time.
Lovely family friendly hotel with pool. Beautiful clean room, delicious individually made breakfast. Bus stop right outside hotel with a bus every ten minutes into York city centre, only a pound each way. Would recommend and definately stay there again .
The Kilima Hotel is great, very helpful staff on checking in and out, breakfast and dinner is good, with lovely service to match. Situated within walking distance of train station, city center and my office.
Stayed here three nights, Monday to Thursday, and very pleased with the hotel. The staff are very welcoming and helpful and the room was clean and comfortable with all we needed. Plenty of choice for breakfast and the quality and service was excellent. Had dinner and drinks on two evenings and again, quality and service could not be faulted (thanks to Sam, our waiter, who could not have been more helpful) and the prices reasonable. One point to note is that the menu was the same for several nights, which, as we are pescatarians, limited our main course choices, but we've found this to be the case in many hotels of this size. For those with a more varied diet, there was enough variety. We would certainly stay here again on our next visit to York.
We had a great one night stay here. Everyone at the hotel was very helpful and welcoming with loads of suggestions of what to do and where to go. Leisure centre was great to use. Its about 10 mins walk into town or the train station. Room was spacious and spotless.
We took our granddaughter and had a lovely visit, the room was really cosy and pool was fab, the steam room was the best we've found in a hotel. Breakfast was very pricey so we opted to eat out but overall we would definately go back.x
We stayed for one night but had a very postive experience. The staff were delightful form the beginning of the stay to the end. The breakfast staff were absolutely delightful, nothing too much trouble and the right level of cheeriness for first thing in the morning. The hotel is a 10 minute walk from the centre which was perfect as it meant the hotel was very quiet. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The decor was a little dated as was the bathroom suite but all in all very clean and nicely set out. There was a pool and steam room available but we didn't have time. I would stay here again, the staff made us feel very welcome.
A winter break at the beginning of February & we wanted to stay in York. It's all year round pricey, it's never cheap to go to York but this place was a bargain. We arrived on a snowy Friday evening but the welcome was so warm from Chris, he is absolutely made for his job managing this hotel, so so friendly and helpful, always . Immediately makes you feel you a chatting to a friend but without being intrusive in any way at all. Our room was huge, cosy and comfortable. We dumped our things and went straight out for a meal. I would say it's a steady leisurely 20 minute stroll into York . I am not the worlds best sleeper and am pillow fussy! This bed was so comfortable and pillows perfect, I slept like a log both nights. Breakfast was included with a selection of fruit, yoghurts, cereals and breads. Then you can also choose to have a freshly cooked hot breakfast , the restaurant staff again were spot on , very prompt friendly service and the whole area was spotlessly clean. They are also really accommodating if you want just certain bits of a breakfast choice. I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family, it's even got an indoor pool, rare in York!! We parked up on Friday and didn't move the car until we left on Sunday, one thing I would say is ring the hotel directly to book in order to get free parking, we thought booking via the best western website would class as booking direct but it didn't. Having said that where else can you park in York for £5 for 24 hours?! The staff are just lovely and it's easily close enough to walk into town without the often ridiculous price tag that this can bring! Will definitely return, thanks for a lovely weekend!
Hotel was very quiet but everything was of a pleasant standard. Handily placed for York centre and local bars and restaurants. The menu looked good but we decided to eat eslsewhere. Had a drink i nthe bar which was downstairs in the old crypt. Breakfast was nice with quick service. Reception very helpful with taxi booking and advice
Lovely hotel, very clean. Free parking when you book direct with the hotel! Staff are really friendly, particularly Chris, The Hotel Manager. It's about a 20 minute walk into York City centre. Would definitely recommend.
First time at this hotel, stopped for two nights as soon as we got there we was greeted by the deputy manager who explained everything to us and now things work at the hotel. Very professional and a lovely warm welcome. Hit the bar in the hotel lovely cosy atmosphere and very reasonable priced. Room is nice and clean with a big bed, breakfast everything you wanted but the waiter Ben was outstanding professional nothing was too much trouble for this young man. Decided to have a meal at the hotel and the food and quality of the food was just as good as breakfast I had the lamb shank it was delicious, and Ben was outstanding again we met the manager at the bar really nice guy very funny, The Best Western Corporation need to have a look at this place because it should be a training ground for all young people coming into the hospitality industry. Well done lads great job and thank you for a great weekend
Lovely little hotel, very friendly staff that could not do more to help you, from the bar staff to the reception. Bit dated décor but perfectly fine, and the breakfast was great. What a shame then that the hotel has decided to increase its revenue from the swimming pool throughout most of the day time hours at the weekend whilst still advertising its lovely facilities. We booked this hotel on the basis of the pool and our 2 children were incredibly excited. On arrival on the Saturday there was a toddler class taking place, so we deferred to the Sunday. On the Sunday a nice refreshing dip after breakfast was the plan, sadly the rude instructor informed us that she'd booked the pool out till 12.30. If the hotel has leased the pool then it should clearly state so in its advertising and emails to guests (reminding them to bring swim suits to take advantage no less!) The receptionist was very apologetic, stating that the pool had not been solely booked, but clearly this wasn't the expectation of the toddler group who expected the entire facility. False advertising and a very frustrating end to what would have been a nice break, trying to explain to a very distraught 6 year old why the 'hotel had lied and why can't I go swimming'
Great place to stay for a quick get away. Very old style but we love that. The pool was a nice little extra for the kids. Great staff and service. Will definitely be using again if we are ever in York.
First of all, let's make it clear that this is a Best Western on a B&B side, very simple with outdated decor, which is totally fine. Beds are on the small side, but we only stayed there for one night and left early the next day. Now, let me tell you one thing about this hotel: IF YOU STAY THERE, GO TO THE RESTAURANT AND ORDER THE LAMB! I'm a super picky eater and at first glance I thought: no way I'm eating anything off this menu, but I decided on tje lamb and mash with seasonal vegetables and it was the best meal I have had during my whole meal to the UK. I even ate the vegetables. Even if you don't stay at this hotel, go there and order the lamb, seriously!
I have stayed at this hotel several times and it is always a very pleasant experience. The rooms are clean and well equipped. The food is very good and the facilities of swimming pool, Steam Room and Gym etc are very good. The hotel is located within walking distance of the city centre and I would always try to stay there when I visit York.
Old converted house like many Great Western hotels, this was as expected. I was allocated the four poster room and whilst the bed was creaky (!) it was comfortable. Like most hotel rooms, this was not bright but was quite spacious. Iron and board, hairdryer and trouser press were in the room as was tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom did not have any space to store your own toiletries - no ledge or cabinet so these had to be on the desk in the room. No grab handle above the bath so it could be tricky coming out (shower in bath) for limited mobility guests. Swimming pool open until 9pm and breakfast from 7:30am. £90 per night - room only - and £5 parking per night. Probably about a mile walk into York city centre. NB York is a treat.
The manager need to learn how to deal with any queries the guests have and not be rude, argumentative and confrontational. The owner had to step in to deal with a simple problem the manager should have delt with. All the other staff were more than helpful.
We stayed for two nights at this hotel. We were welcomed by Chris, who is a real asset to the hotel - enthusiastic, helpful and made our children laugh. We had a family room (11) which was fine for what we paid but perhaps a little dated and the pillows a bit hard! Otherwise we were happy with it - plenty of room for suitcases etc. The kids loved the pool which was clean and well maintained, fresh towels provided etc. We had breakfast on our second morning at the hotel which was great - freshly cooked and hot and the staff were very attentive. The walk into town is about 15 minutes and you can walk in on the city walls which was nice. Lots of great shops, attractions, cafes and restaurants. We loved the Viking museum, castle museum and the ghost tours and the Railway museum is fab - kids will love it. All in all a great stay and we will be back!
Stayed 2/3rd Jan in room 22. Welcoming staff, hotel gave out positive vibes which turned out to be correct. Room was fine as was the bed ( oh please change the rock cakes=pillows ). Only let down. Maybe a bigger TV for the room? Big plus is the indoor pool, we booked because of this and it was well worth it. We walked back from the centre of York from Lendal, 1.1 mile. Never booked breakfast only because we have brunch, would I visit the hotel again.....absolutely yes, a credit to the owners, well done!!
We enjoyed our stay in BW Kilima Hotel, room was large, with impressive high ceilings, and very clean. Plenty of safe parking, and we were pleased to be able to leave the car and walk into York City centre when we arrived in the morning. I would say it is a slightly longer walk than the 15 minutes stated, but perhaps it seemed like it after having done it four times! Felt slightly uneasy hearing the couple in the room above having their first shouting match of 2019 in the early hours of New Year's Day, but they eventually quietened down. Breakfast, at £10 per person was of reasonable quality, slightly more choice of cereals would have been appreciated, or perhaps porridge on the menu. Staff were helpful and cheery. £5 for car parking as we hadn't booked our room direct with the hotel, but I felt this was reasonable. We would be happy to stay here again, next time bringing our swimming cossies!
Checked in sat 29 Dec. Friendly and humorous chap on the desk who made us feel welcome and relaxed. Gave us a tour and showed us our room. He was happy to answer questions and advise. The room was warm, clean, quiet and comfortable. No traffic noise in our room and soft comfy bed well made with 4 pillows and plenty extra bedding available. Bathroom clean, ample toiletries if you wish, tissues and loo roll. Basket full of tea bags and coffee etc. There was an honesty table for odds and ends in reception - nice touch. The pool and gym were accessible all day and plenty big fluffy towels (and in the room) available. Very nice extra for a city hotel and we used the pool each day. Parking was secure and generous spaces, no worries about leaving the car. Access to town was a easy, nice walk into York and hotel staff happy to help with directions. All in all a top trip and I will defo go again!
I can't recommend this Hotel highly enough. Another return for me, to this gem of a hotel. Another Christmas stay. Once again a spotless room and lovely clean hotel. Fabulous festive fare . I loved the new style evening Xmas day buffet that Chris had done this year. Great food and beautifully displayed . The attention to details for this festive stay was lovely. We had different napkins for each meal which had lovely designs on. The staff were brilliant, lovely to see Ben and Sam again, and also the Ladies ( sorry girls, I recognised you, but couldn't remember your names). I have only ever been to this hotel at Xmas, but am seriously considering a stay at some other time of the year. I love the History of the hotel, and all the old sepia pictures on the walls too - even discovered that one of the pictures was a distant relative of mine. This was a solo trip for me, but I was made to feel more than welcome. I'd like to say a massive thank you to Chris and his team for making my stay a very happy one. Hope to return soon. Happy New Year to you all.
My wife and I decided for the first time to spend Christmas in a hotel and chose York as our destination. We were delighted and impressed by the friendliness and attentiveness of all the staff who were eager to ensure we enjoyed our stay. The food was excellent, particularly the Christmas Day feast! We would be happy to return and would unhesitatingly recommend this lovely gem of a hotel.
Booked the family room, really roomy. Very clean & cosy. The beds comfy & bathroom faultless. With an indoor swimming pool, steam room. & gym. All again super clean & in great order. Breakfast was fantastic, brilliant choices The service was 2nd to none, all so friendly Walking distance to the city or on a regular bus route. I highly recommend calling the hotel to book directly as we seemed to get a better deal this way Honestly this is a top choice hotel. It really made our trip to York
A fantastic hotel a short walk away from the centre of York. Staff very polite and helpful and the hotel has a great swimming pool which my children loved. The breakfast was amazing, unable to comment on other meals as we didn't have any other food at the hotel but would imagine also very good. We have stayed here now several times and we wouldn't stay anywhere else when visiting York.
We have stayed in many hotels in York, ranging from budget chains to B&Bs. This one is about 20 injures walk from the centre proper but most of the walk is scenic and easy. Upon arrival we were welcomed by one of the friendliest receptionists we have met. We were able to park the car and leave it even though we were very early for check in. The room was spacious and very clean with comfy seating and tea and coffee. The best was a super king and we lost each other during the night! The breakfast benefited from great produce and a simple but quality choice. All the staff were excellent from the young waiting staff in the morning to the two receptionists/managers. All made this short stay most pleasurable. We will stay here again.
Stayed here for a few days whilst visiting York Christmas Market' From the minute we arrived to leaving service was excellent throughout. Staff are helpful, friendly. Hotel has a nice homely feel, Spacious rooms, comfy beds, swimming pool, steam room Mini Gym. Nice little bar downstairs, and a restaurant that serves a great full English + continental breakfast, not a huge selection for evening meal, but we ate in once, food was well prepared and delicious. We loved this hotel, not modern or brash (not dated as some would say)just comfy. We will definitely recommend this hotel to friends and family. Book direct and get free parking on site. Last but not least amazing staff.
We have stayed in York for a number of years now in the late November period which is a really good time to visit just before Christmas we have used both QHotels ie Aldwark Manor and Mecure Fairfield Manor which we have visited over a number of years and the staff informed us that they would match a deal from other hotels iif we asked we informed them of a QHotel deal and the staff said yes we will match this deal but ! when we come to book the manager intervened and said no we do not need to do a deal as we are busy at this time of year to me this was not good to over rule your staff so we did nt proceed with the booking .But the good news was we found a little GEM of a hotel called BW KILIMA which is a really great hotel near to the city centre ,very good food and drink at a very reasonable price So special thanks to Chris - Tom -Laura -Ben who work together like a dream No job to Big or Small for any of them the owner should be really proud of them all other hotels should take note this Hotel as really got it Right and we look forward to our next visit.
The friendly staff make this small hotel stand out from the rest. They know your name after just a day, nothing is any trouble for them and they make you feel totally at home. They all support each other and there is a real family atmosphere. The breakfasts are superb, all cooked to order so no rubber eggs or limp bacon. And just a short walk to central York. This was our second visit and we wouldn't contemplate staying anywhere else in York.
Friendly, efficient staff, great location for walking into the centre of the city and free car parking if you book direct. Indoor swimming pool and a freshly cooked breakfast. We will use it every time we need to stay in York.
Hotel easy to find & a reasonably manageable walk into York. Room decor a bit dated, but good food & a pool in the basement. Staff were friendly & helpful. Sufficient parking at rear of hotel, which is free if you book directly with the hotel. If you book via another website, it is £5/day. Would stay there again.
A little gem in york. This is a great place for a family of 5, fab staff and great location for the museum. the breakfast was great with plenty of options, the evening meal should be skipped the hotel isn't big enough to provide quality evening meals. but that said I would go back.
Booked a last minute night away in York for Halloween. Came across the BW Kilma as wanted a pool if possible... Booked it on the reviews. From the minute we walked into the hotel me and my daughter felt welcome... staff so friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Had lovely morning swim followed by a fantastic breakfast. Would highly recommend and would stay there again. Thank you
I booked direct with the hotel for a midweek 3 night stay last week for myself and sister. We had a large ground floor room with very comfortable single beds, bath and shower with plenty of hot water. We used the swimming pool a few times, the pool area and changing rooms were immaculate. Clean towels were provided. All the staff were lovely and friendly. We arrived early and left baggage at the hotel, map and directions of area provided by staff. We didn't eat at the hotel but there seemed to be a nice choice for the evening menu. Extra tea/coffee/milk etc supplied on a table by reception, help yourself when required...very nice touch. A great hotel and will definitely stay again.
Had a three night stay as a family of five. Really enjoyed our visit having booked direct. Kids and I loved the 10m pool which was open between 9am and 9pm. Took advantage of the free parking as I had booked direct and we used the cheap and frequent bus service into the city which stopped directly outside the hotel, you could walk in if you fancy either. Breakfast was lovely with plenty of choice to suit us all. The kids slept in a side room off our room with a TV in which was ideal. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Overall we had a lovely time and would love to go back.
I had the pleasure of staying here for 2 days last week. A little bit wary of moving away from my tried and tested but so glad I did. A lovely old building creaking floorboards and all. Comfy room and lots of the usual little extras. But the biggest bonus here is the staff. They are so lovely. Helpful, friendly and genuine attentiveness. Especially the 2 young lads in the restaurant. Not the best selection on the menu for either breakfast or dinner, but what you do get is freshly cooked, piping hot and very tasty. Well done Kilima I will look forward to staying again
We booked direct with the hotel. We were not disappointed the family room was excellent good size and extra room for children with TV and sitting area. Lovely clean hotel, everyone of the staff we spoke to were helpful, polite and just really lovely people. We could not have asked for more. We checked in and was given map with Hooe to get into city walking or on the bus told us exactly how far to the bus stop. Pool area great lovely clean towels . Breakfast great really good selection and again great service by all staff. Checked out and again great customer service. We will come back to this hotel our boys loved the pool, their room and breakfast. Little gem of a hotel. Thank you
We visited York as a family of four and stayed at this pleasantly individual hotel for four very relaxing nights. I spoke to the the reception and they organised two single beds which our children found very comfortable. They couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. The room was an ideal size for us and had everything we needed. The children enjoyed the pool and I enjoyed the steam room! Breakfast was a very satisfying start to a long day being tourists in what is a wonderful and fascinating part of the world. We found the hotel to be a comfortable walk from the station but undoubtedly there would be buses etc. Having stayed in premier inn more times than we can count it's really nice to stay in a place that has a personality....perfect on a medium budget!
Came up to York for a few days on my own to enjoy the history. Had some Best Western Points so I booked this hotel and it was great for the most part. I want a hotel to be CQCD - that is Cool, Quiet, Comfortable and Dark. For the most part the Kilima was all that. Airconditioning in Europe is generally not good and I could only get the room cool enough by opening the window. The room was very quiet, never heard my neighbours at all. The bed was comfortable but like most European King size beds it's two beds pushed together. When one bed is an inch higher than the other you can't really sprawl across the whole thing. I was able to get the room quite dark enough for sleeping. I also appreciated that there was lots of hot water in the shower. Check-in and departure were smooth. The hotel did not have USB ports but the manager managed to find me one which he borrowed from a guest. I have stayed in a number of BW hotels in the USA and Canada and breakfast has always been included. However, in this case the breakfast was awesome, you would sit down and a waiter would take your order and they had eggs benedict with smoked salmon (Eggs Royale apparently is the term used in England). It was very good. There was also a small buffet with cereal, drinks, bread and pastry etc. Very nice. I even ate dinner one night at the hotel and the lamb shank (not what one would expect in a BW) was excellent. Huge portions too. All in all very satisfactory.
A good hotel with easy access into the city of York using buses that stop just outside the hotel and eliminate the problems of finding city-centre parking. Although it is near enough to walk into the city, after a day of sight-seeing the legs appreciate the bus
A lovely hotel clean and comfortable with lovely staff, coming to a hotel at the weekend is sometimes a Concern that you will be surrounded by a huge wedding.. Not so here it is great, a good balance of friendliness and privacy
Excellent the hotel is situated just a short walk into the city, we had great weekend and would use it again. The staff were very helpful and always there when needed. The rooms are comfortable and clean ,with tea making facility.
Fantastic hotel. Arrived early evening Friday night. Plenty of parking at the back of the hotel. Reception was very welcoming. Was shown to our room which was a four poster room with a separate lounge area. It was very clean and the bed was so comfortable. Very good value for money. The bathroom had complimentary toiletries. There was plenty of tea/coffee things in the room and if you needed a top up they had a tray full in the reception area. The bar was a great place to chill out and have a chat, the barman Ben was very chatty and friendly. The hotel manager was very helpful and talked us through a map of the best places to visit. Had a great w'end in a lovely hotel. Highly recommended. Would definitely return
The hotel is very clean and well decorated, all the staff are friendly, polite and attentive. The room was clean and everything we wanted, the shower was excellent and the bed very comfortable. The food is excellent, we had dinner and breakfast and it was cooked to order and served hot. A perfect relaxing place to stay, we wouldn't hesitate to return on our next visit to York
The décor of the bedroom was a bit dated and the floorboards were very creaky. All the staff I came into contact with were very friendly and helpful, The bar stock was a bit limited food was excellent the service was very good
Stayed here for a long weekend with my father. We had a lovely time. Hotel very nice and quiet yet only 15 minutes walk from Micklegate and city walls. Staff nice, breakfast good, nice swimming pool, clean, quiet. Everything that you would want for a city break.
A very comfortable hotel just a 10 minute walk from York city centre. Wonderful friendly staff, very tasty breakfast with a fabulous swimming pool. We had a great time and would definitely return again.
I think this review is long overdue. I've stayed in this hotel 4 times now and my boyfriend has stayed here numerous times so I think this speaks volumes. It's a lovely hotel which is always welcomed by the lovely Chris on reception. This hotel has a homely feel to it. Which is why we continue to come back 2 or 3 times a year. There is a swimming pool located within the hotel along with a steam room. The facilities are never too busy and more often than not, it's usually just us using them when we visit. There is also a gym, but I have never used this. Car parking is available at the back of the hotel. This is free if you book direct with the hotel. If you don't then it's £5.00 per night. Which even at £5.00 is excellent compared to other hotels in York. I've never had an evening meal at the hotel, but I have had breakfast with is really nice. There is a variety of cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurt to choose from. As well as a menu for a cooked breakfast. I can highly recommend the Eggs Royale which is my favourite when I stay. York city centre is about a 10 – 15 minute walk away. This is an excellent hotel and I can't rate it enough. Hope to see you soon. Vicky and Simon from Doncaster.
Great little find, 10/15 minute walk into the center of York. We stayed in a family room, (2 adults 2 children) which was clean and nicely decorated Parking on site Added bonus of a swimming pool, which the kids love Very friendly staff Good choice of breakfast would recommend
This hotel has an old-fashioned feel to it which adds to the experience. It is clean, comfortable, cosy and the staff are friendly and helpful. Swimming pool, steam room and gym are great to have on hand and the wifi is good and quick too. 10mins from the station and 15 from the city centre so easy to get around from. It's on a busy road but the room we had was towards the back of the building so wasn't a problem.
Dated décor and fittings but fantastic friendly staff. Comfortable room but dated décor and fittings. just here for 2 nights but good value. pool is fantastic if you like pools. breakfast was A+ as per usual BW standards. the best attribute is the staff, nothing is too much trouble. We will deffo go there again.
We had a lovely weekend at the Kilima Hotel in York in August. The staff were very attentive and the breakfast was excellent. We would recommend this hotel. The location was good and only took about 10 minutes to walk into York
We visit for long weekend with our daughter and two granddaughters the children loved the swimming pool couldn't keep them out of it brilliant location for going into York staff were very friendly and helpful will definitely be coming back
I stay away from home circa 3 nights per week with my work. I encounter lots of different Hotels all over but mainly in London. I paid £137 for me solo in a room with breakfast. This hoe felt ‘unloved' the way hotels slowly deteriorate when they are up for sale and current owners are no longer investing in the business at all. Whilst my room was fine aesthetically, it was dusty. The small room with gym equipment hadn't been checked and was missing paper towels and spray to clean equipment after use, the small set of lockers would accept new £1 coins and I had been looking for ward to breakfast (best meal of the day) but when I sat down there was a very established spiders web and larger spider occupying the adjacent wall. I appear to be completely in the minority when I read other recent reviews but this was my experience. I would have rather paid less and had a little less In somewhere else or paid a little more and had a lot more in another hotel. I wouldn't book again mainly because for me this Hotel doesn't warrant the price I paid.
A lovely hotel with very friendly staff. Rooms were clean and amenities very good. Breakfast was delicious and filling. Convenient for the city centre to walk. The pool was a real bonus to relax after a day out before the evening meal.
Having stayed for three nights (26th till 29th July) at a very busy time as both York races were on and graduation ceremonies for the university it was an excellent stay. The decoration is a little old fashioned but still lovely. The room we were in was a very good size and had everything you could need. All I will say is there were no sockets by the bed but as I'd taken an extension lead this wasn't a problem. All staff were friendly and helpful. We arrived earlier than check in as we wanted to leave our luggage and go shopping. On arriving back at the hotel the receptionist/manager had taken our luggage to our room ready for us. The pool was lovely and quiet which is what I prefer. Breakfast was an added bonus as I didn't actually know it was included in what we'd paid! Even at breakfast on the last morning while the restaurant was packed for breakfast all the staff were friendly and helpful at what must have been a stressful time! I really would recommend this hotel as it is very close to the centre only a couple of minutes bus ride or drive and a 10 minute walk.
Just returned home having stayed at the Best Western Kilima hotel.Manager Chris was very helpful and welcoming. All staff friendly.Nice room and king size bed.Breakfast was good and plenty of choice. Will return.
This is a very pleasant hotel staffed by really nice and friendly staff. The walk into town is more 20 minutes than 15 but easily manageable. My only gripe with our stay is that because we had booked through Best Western rather than the Hotel itself ( total cost in excess of £2,000 for four couples ) we would be subject to a £5 per night parking fee that is not applied if you book direct. I really could not understand, and this as, after all, it is a Best Western Hotel and the charge of £20 seemed unnecessary. When checking out and asking for a rationale for this, none was provided leaving a slightly sour taste to an otherwise enjoyable stay.
I have stayed here 3 or 4 times now, always clean and friendly. Excellent breakfast selection, freshly cooked to order. If you book direct with them there are no car parking charges. Location is slightly outside the city but it is only a very short walk.
This was the first time visiting this hotel, being given a Best Western travel card as a retirement gift. Upon arrival a slight issue with processing the card for payment but the young lady said it was not a problem and the Hotel Manager would sort it the next day. We were shown to our room (21) which was clean and spacious. It overlooked the car park and was very quiet. With it being about 15 mins walk into the City, it was situated in a quieter part of York which suited us. We took advantage of the swimming pool and steam room which was great and really relaxing. Spoke to Chris the Manager the next morning who sorted out the travel card payment without any fuss. He appeared very experienced and knowledgeable and was genuinely interested in helping the customers. We had a really good 2 night stay in this excellent, characteristic hotel and will definitely return.
Honest review: This is a 3 Star hotel, so don't expect the intercontinental. Saying that, value for money for a family room, in York this is the clear winner! We booked this hotel for several reasons: we wanted a family room (two adults, two kids). It has free parking (not common inside the city) and it had an indoor pool (in case of inclement weather). First off, the service was great. The manager (we think), checked us in and waked us to our room. She then apologized for the second room not being set up for the kids. It was still set up as a couch. Not a problem to us, we hadn't even requested it so no problem. (It was set up for us while we were out to dinner). And the constant, nice helpful friendly service started from there. Nice manager, nice serving staff for the breakfast, nice bar staff and even nice maids! Everyone was just nice, friendly and helpful, from our arrival through two days and until check out. The pool was really nice, the change rooms clean and it was quiet. Good for a dip after dinner! The breakfast was great! Included in the room it was table service with a proper hot breakfast and a good menu. In the Radisson, the same meal would have been on the buffet and at £12 a person. Free parking and a 10 minute walk to the city center. We did not mind the walk and there are several routes, including walking along the city wall! (Which the kids loved!). Parking at hotels inside the walls are usually £20 a day or more. The only critical comment I would make is that the rooms are “vintage”. New mattresses, pillows, linens and towels but the decor and amenities are dated. Not having a USB or power plug by the bed will frustrate most travelers, but we carry several extension leads as this is a common problem. There is an upside to vintage too, the shower head is distinctly “non water saver”. (Possibly a surplus fire hose...lol). One does like a good shower. Overall, great value for money and we will stay there again. We can afford to stay where we wish, but this one aces the price VS service aspect admirably. Cheers!
Stayed for 1night following a day at the races, short 15 minute walking distance from centre and 20 from race course or £5 taxi ride. I had a single occupancy room, it was clean, nice big tv,fan, iron, tea and coffee facilities. Bathroom with full bath and shower. Ample on site parking. Friendly staff both at reception and at breakfast ...Sam & Ben very attentive and polite. Overall fantastic hotel, fantastic price given the popular race day and compared to others and will certainly be returning when I next visit York. Definatly recommend. Thanks for a great troublefree weekend!
Stayed overnight on a room only basis. We have been to York many times and this hotel is good value for money. Good location with parking and easy walk into the city centre. Friendly staff on reception. Decent sized ensuite double room (No. 7) with everything you need. Nice bar situated on the lower ground floor next to the restuarant.
First time for me visiting York and will definitely be back. Best Western was fab. Booked mainly because of the car park, and the fact it had a swimming pool that guests could use FOC was an added bonus. We booked through booking.com but it is advised to book direct, you'll get a better price and free parking. The place was spotless. Staff were lovely and so friendly. Town was only a 10min walk away. When I do come back to York I'll definitely be coming to stay here again!
If you want a five star, everything shiny and new hotel then this is not it. If you want a clean bed, pleasant staff and good breakfast then the Kilima fits the bill. We paid well over the odds as it was a racing weekend at York but that was our choice. The surrounding area is a mix of private properties, small commercial enterprises and hotels & B & B premises. Quiet enough and sufficiently close to walk into the city or to the racecourse if you are moderately able. The reception is warm, friendly and gives sufficient information without being read chapter & verse. The hotel is a little tired in some aspects but the bedroom was clean and airy. Bed was a bit too soft for me but it was only one night. We used the pool before breakfast which was a good start to the day. Breakfast was served by friendly professional staff. It was tasty, well cooked and plentiful. More than enough menu choice for 99% of people. Would we stay again? Yes if we got a better price and we were told by the gentleman on reception that the best price is always by 'phoning direct.
This hotel is wonderful inside. Very clean and tidy and staff are friendly and polite. The bar and breakfast area is downstairs and very nice. There is a pool which you can use and parking area at the back which is very safe. Our room was lovely. Spacious and clean and all decor and fixtures are well maintained. One of the best places to stay in york.
We enjoyed this hotel very much. The staff were very helpful efficient and very polite. A lovely room comfortable bed and a very powerful shower. Very nice breakfast and evening meal. Good parking. A very good hotel for proximity to York centre.
Good general location to city. 20-25 minute stroll to city walls, shortcut available to Railway Museum. Enjoyable meal in restaurant with sensible fixed pricing on each course. Cosy swimming pool and steam room facility.
An old building that has been sympathetically extended and updated. Our double room was very comfortable and, even though on the ground floor, was pleasantly quiet. There is also on site parking and a nice swimming pool. Note: as their details say, there is no lift so, although the staff always offer help with luggage, if you find stairs a challenge request a ground floor room. All the staff were very polite, friendly and helpful from check in to check out The restaurant provided excellent food, and the Yorkshire portions were generous. The chef did an excellent job when we went "off menu" a bit so we could enjoy the food without overdoing it. It is an an ideal position for visiting York, the centre of which is a 10-15 minute walk. However, local buses 1,5 and 5a stopped just outside the hotel for those so inclined. A most enjoyable stay.
Many Floor boards broken in bedroom, shower did not work, noisy - guests shouting till 00:45. Staff attempted to gain entry at 07:45. We could feel the individual bed springs digging into us , difficult to find a comfortable position. You wont get rewards points unless you book with Best Western ( which is more expensive) No soundproofing and tiny rooms. The Hotel needs a full refurbishment No lift to upper floors so no good for those with difficulty walking
Visited York over bank holiday; Kilima hotel had a warm friendly atmosphere. Room was spacious and well presented. Ended up going for a swim in the morning of our departure, pool was warm and wasn't busy at all. Overall the price of the hotel was worth it! Thanks for a great stay!
Stayed at the Kilima for 2 nights. Lovely welcome, very helpful. Room was nice and big with everything you need. Breakfast service was excellent with plenty of choice. Staff really make this hotel. Was a nice distance from the city centre and easy to find from the train station. Would definitely return and stay again. Thank you.
Stayed here for three days over the bank holiday weekend and was very happy with the hotel. The room was very larger and comfortable, the whole hotel is kept very clean and all the staff were polite and friendly. Breakfast was nice and the weather was excellent, but i dont think the hotel can take the credit for that. Would definitely recommend and stay again. ??
After several years of staying at The Kilima we were not disappointed. Staff excellent, good breakfast, location great 10 mins walk to town centre 20 mins to racecourse. A happy and inviting hotel to stay. Can't recommend it high enough.
We would stay there again all round very good and we are fussy, bus stop just outside for going out and a short walk for return 5 mins or less to city centre. Staff are very helpful great pool and gym. We only had breakfast and that was excellent, we eat out, plenty of tea and coffee in the room and the bed was very comfy clean crisp bedding
I cannot speak highly enough on the Kilima Hotel, Holgate Road, York. I have been a Best Western customer for some years now, but this is the best hotel we have stayed in over the years. I return to York regularly (am a Freeman of the City) so have some experience of the hostelries available.
Great place to stay if you are visiting York. Bus stop just across the road takes you to the city, or taxi 5-6 pounds, or walk about 20-25 mins. Fairly quiet for our visit of 3 nights. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Plenty of car parking space. Nice room with a very comfortable bed, but perhaps the decor could do with a bit of a freshen up. Would definitely stay there again next time.
We got a pleasant surprise when we turned up. It's a very quaint old almost mansion with many levels I'd best describe it. Nice little bar and restaurant. There's no sauna or gym we found but there was a steam room and nice pool so description may be outdated. A very easy walk to town even in the rain so car could be left onsite. Great staff and very helpful. Only suggestion I'd get a room on a high level as some rooms have creaky floor boards being an older place. I'd go back for sure
We stayed one night in March as it was one of the more affordable places to choose and the location looked great. Very clean, comfortable room and helpful staff on reception. Close enough to walk into the centre or you can catch a bus (no 1 or no 5) across the road for £1 each way. £5 car parking but free if you book direct with the hotel staff. Didn't use the pool and didn't have breakfast so can't comment on these aspects. Would definitely stay again if the price is right.
I would highly recommend this 3 star hotel, it is at the top of it's game, excellent staff, food and cleanliness, and great comfort of room's, rare that you go anywhere and can honestly say you like everybody, but I did here, would highly recommend this Hotel.
Just returned from two days at the Best Western Kilima Hotel and have to say that we had a lovely time. The room was fine as was the bathroom. Nice and clean and warm! The staff are all lovely from Chris and the deputy manager to the waiters in the bar/restaurant. It's a canny walk into town but we enjoyed that and it worked off some of the calories from food and drink. We had breakfast both mornings and it was lovely and hot! We ate in the restaurant one night and the food was fine. We would definitely return to this hotel. Thank you!
brilliant stay, perfect location. spacious room. delicious freshly cooked breakfast. swimming pool a plus, used every morning before breakfast, great way to start the day. bus service great/convenient, only £1 to city center. booking direct with the hotel was the best price, booking this way also entitles you to free parking.-another plus. looking forward to our next visit to York and staying at the kilima.
Excellent service in a convenient location would highly recommend. Only small blip would be the limited Dinner menu which would be better if it was more than a set menu option. Breakfast was excellent. The Staff where friendly, approachable and very willing to help. Overall would highly recommend
Everything excellent. Location perfect for 24 hours in York. The personal service was very good. The swimming pool was a real bonus, breakfast very good. Our rooms were all fine and I had the best night's sleep I have enjoyed for ages! We are going to keep coming back to this hotel for our reunions as we feel no need to keep finding new locations. Perfect!!
Stayed here for 2 nights the room was very good but the tv was very small which is not an issue really but thought I should mention it the staff was brilliant the food fantastic especially the breakfast quality hotel thanks for a enjoyable stay 5 star
Stayed here for one night only but must say from checking in we were treat brilliantly and courteously, the room was comfortable and the bed sound, it was a bit of a walk into town but the weather added to the misery, all in all the stay was what the doctor ordered and we had a great time would definitely return.
First off yet again I wish there was a good on the guide as a jump from average to very good is to much! The hotel is a good walk out of the city centre but there are bus stops very close by the staff are very friendly and helpful the bedroom was clean and spacious but the bathroom small dated and not inviting also breakfast is on the expensive side at £10 pp the swimming pool is a nice touch we wouldn't rush back but if a deal was on it would be a maybe
Stayed at the Kilima for 2 nights. I've stayed here before 2 years ago and it was just as good this time. The rooms are comfy and clean with tea and coffee facilities. In fact the rooms have everything you would possibly need including an iron and ironing board!! Breakfast is fab and cooked to order. The bonus of this hotel is the pool and fitness centre. Managed to find time for a swim and a go on the running machine. About a 15 minute walk to the train station or £5 in a taxi. The staff are so friendly and welcoming. When I visit York again, it will be the Kilima I'll be staying in. Thank you to everyone for a fab stay.
Stayed for one night with my wife and daughter. We had an amazing stay, Best Westerns can be a bit hit and miss but this one isban absolute gem! The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful and the facilities are great. Our daughter loved the pool and our evening meal and breakfasts were brilliant. We would most definitely stay here again when we next visit York.
From the moment we checked in to the moment we left we had an excellent weekend. The receptionist carried our bags to the room which was clean and had everything we were likely to need during our stay. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent, friendly attentive staff looked after us and the cost of it all was excellent value. Breakfast was great, and set us up for the day. Ample car parking, and located within walking distance of the city centre. Terrific value. We will definitely stay again.
Stayed here for one night while passing through York. Good sized comfortable room and hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. Didn't have breakfast so can't comment on the food but we did use the pool and gym which are a bit of a bonus in a hotel this size. Good value given its handy location 10 minutes walk from the railway station.
Arrived to Kilima with a nice friendly welcome shown to our room totally spotless..and so was bathroom with loverly white large bath towels .....swimming pool was first class again so clean and enjoyable....Breakfast was served by polite staff who served us with efficiency the choice was good ...such as scramble egg and bacon on a muffin which was delicious....it was a relaxing stay and yes I would stay again ...thank you
We came for a weekend with 7 children and four adults so a pretty large group and found the hotel to be incredibly accommodating. They allowed us to bring our own cake for my mothers birthday which was helpful. The pool was perfect for us to play in and the meals were great. Staff were helpful, food lovely and rooms really good standard.
We've been coming to this hotel every ten years between Christmas and New Year since we were first a couple, so this is our fourth visit. In that time it has grown from a family run hotel to a Best Western chain establishment, but it has kept most of its original charm- the Victorian public spaces, the cosy restaurant and bar in the barrel vaulted cellar, the helpful staff; with the added bonus of a pool and fitness suite. This was our first stay in the modern extension to the original building- no complaints about any of the fittings, or our comfort- the bed especially was huge- it just had a bit of a corporate feel to it, unlike the rooms in which we have previously stayed which had a more quirky charm. I fully appreciate that one woman's quirky charm is another's old fashioned nightmare- but personally I like old buildings to show their character. Ah well, it's the price of success- the hotel has had to expand, and Best Western have their own ideas about ( mahogany veneered) desks and chairs!
Nice building but quite draughty windows due to single glazing when the heating kicked in it was ok .not a bad location if you like a walk, but there is a bus stop outside just £1 into town .check-in was fine.room not too small adequate for a couple of nights .Clean room with very clean towels.Ample toiletries and refreshments and more in reception which is good so you don't have to keep asking for more milk . watch your checkout bill as they tried to bill us for breakfast which we never had seemed like it happens often with the response they gave . overall a good stay and would return
Hotel is 15-20min. walk from city center, with quite nice street to walk. Hotel itself is in a bit of need of modernization, but is clean, has charm and everything is working. Rooms is of a good size and breakfast is really tasty. Hotel has a pool and sauna, both water in a pool and air in sauna was quite cold for my liking, but it's only few people using it together with us it was calm and spacious.
Handy hotel being a 15 minute easy walk to the centre of York; meaning we could just leave the car for the weekend (parking is free if you booj through the hotel , otherwise £5 per day). Staff were very friendly, and the breakfast chef was particularly friendly and accommodating to our food requests. The pool and steam room were an added bonus and stayed open until 9pm; lucky we mostly had it to ourselves but would be uncomfortable if there were more than 7-10 people. Rooms quiet and beds comfortable. The hotel is in need of modernisation, and because of this is overpriced in my opinion. What is lacking in terms of modernisation, is compensated by location, staff and pool.
Was given a double room even though I had only paid for a single so this was good. Swimming pool and Gym very good and spotlessly clean. Staff very helpful and polite. Overall really pleased. Would definitely stay again.
We came with our two young children (aged 4 and 1) for a few days' family holiday post-Christmas, and the Kilima suited our needs perfectly. We had a great family suite so kids had their own room, and the staff could not have been more helpful providing a cot and high chair, accommodating special requests and helping us plan days out. Our daughter adored her daily swim in the (warm, quiet) pool, as well as the delight of baked beans for breakfast! The hotel is conveniently located a short bus ride from the city center - with older kids you could even walk. Breakfast was great with lots of cooked options as well as full English available, plus coffee, juice, cereal and fruit salad. Staff were universally lovely, friendly and cheerful. The only negative for us was dinner; apart from some very good soup, the restaurant food is heavy, and lacking fresh vegetables. If you are not bound by kids' schedules, best to eat elsewhere. That said, overall for us this was a very good family option. Recommended.
We have just retuned from our Christmas break at the Kilima hotel.first of all. The staff were excellent especially the manager .we got the rooms on the ground floor as requested.my 85 year old mum was with us for her Christmas treat.Very disappointed with the whole thing ,there was no atmosphere.no. Christmas music etc.the hotel rooms and reception were too cold for mum the heating wasn't on until the evening.mum can't walk far and is losing her sight ,we expected to spend time in the lounge but not to be, The food was atrocious apart from the first night, from. The on everything went downhill.we were all looking forward to our Christmas lunch ,what a load of rubbish, the vegetables needed a hacksaw to cut them .i don't think they had been cooked at all.nearly everyone complained ,as we did but nothing happened. The buffet was disgusting infact we didn't eat much at all .mum was really upset.the price we paid was far too much ,Susan Kinley
This is by no means the grandest or nicest hotel I have stayed in, but for the price we paid ( and in comparison to the prices of other York hotels) this was a good choice. A little out of town, but excellent location for us as we were driving in and it meant we didn't have to drive through York centre. The hotel manager was very friendly and let us have an early check in which was so helpful and allowed us to make the most of our day in York, he provided us with a handy map and help with directions. We had two single rooms and they were fine, a slight air of faded grandeur with scuff marks on the walls, curtains not quite up properly and a shower door that was very hard to close however the bed was very comfy for a good night sleep and that's all I needed the room for! Really good that it had a swimming pool, I didn't get chance to use it but my dad enjoyed his morning swim! There wasn't the largest selection for breakfast but the food we did have was very good...plenty of vegetarian options! All in all I probably wouldn't stay here for a romantic holiday but as a convinent and cheap stop over it was ideal :)
Lovely hotel. Bit of a trek into town if you're not good on your feet but decent if you've okay. Room was very comfortable, not a great view from window (next door ‘s bins) but wasn't staying there for that. Fantastic breakfast that set you up for the day. Lovely staff. My only criticism would be on checking out they then stated parking was £10 extra as we didn't book with them direct. This should've been made explicit when checking in then you're aware. There is a car park at the rear of the hotel. I didn't mind paying but you should be up front about it and not say on your way out. Not good practice but this is my opinion. Otherwise clean, tidy and friendly hotel and staff. Would recommend.
Overnight stay for a social do. Far enough out of town to be quiet, close enough to walk in. The room was fine. Friendly staff. Good price and free parking when I phoned direct. Good quality sausage, bacon and eggs (properly poached!) at breakfast. What's not to like? My new go-to hotel for York trips.
Welcoming and relaxed. Made to feel welcome. Great facilities nearly forgot to take my swimming costume! Good breakfast. Happy to pay for parking as so close to city centre. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Arrived at the hotel for three night four day stay, the hotel presented warm and friendly Becky , one of the receptionists greeted us with a lovely warm welcome she was so hepful. Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. The rooms were lovely, clean tidy and very cosy. Breakfast was outstanding beautifully presented and all the staff within the dining room were very efficient I cannot praise this hotel and it's staff enough, it is on a very good bus route for two people to go into the city centre the cost was £4 return much cheaper than a taxi fare which would've been £7 each. A final thank you to the manager what a lovely guy . Definitely be back.
Lovely hotel very clean lovely swimming pool with steam room breakfast was very nice staff very helpful only ten minutes walk into town so left car in car park £5 for the day but if you book direct get this for free
Here for 1 night for a wedding. The staff were lovely & very helpful (allowed us to leave car in car park after we'd checked out so we could go into town - plenty of parking too). The breakfast was spot on, having the pool for a morning dip was great. It's well within walking distance of the city. Room was clean & tidy. Would thoroughly recommend & would definitely return.
Convienently located hotel with bus stops within one minute walk. Good car park behind the hotel and out of site. If you book through the BW web site you have to pay £5/day, it's free if you book directly with the hotel (I know for next time). Staff were very helpful and cheery. Our room was ok but the bathroom needs attention, paint peeling of the door and the shower curtain needs to be longer to stop the floor from getting wet. Ideal hotel for weekend break and we would use it again.
Stayed 2 nights for our wedding anniversary , definitely a 3* hotel which is overpriced we stayed in a king room which was actually quite nice but found the bathroom could have been cleaner , along with communial areas ladies toilets smelt of urine which was a surprise . Breakfast was ok but poached eggs weren't cooked , settled for scrambled eggs with bacon on a muffin for the 2nd visit which was dreadful never had scrambled eggs served like that before more like slices of omelette. Have to say staff really looked happy to be working there and everyone was pleasant, We really enjoyed our stay in York but would we return to this hotel ..probably not
I have just returned from a work conference in York and had the great pleasure of staying in this lovely hotel. The welcome a colleague and myself received was warm and friendly. All the staff were very pleasant. My room was lovely, a little dated but I thought quite quaint and fitted in perfectly with York's historical feel. It was very clean and the bed was the most comfortable I have slept in for a while (including my own). Breakfast was delicious (I highly recommend the bacon and egg roll). If I had one criticism, it would be regarding the noise from the road. It was quiet during sleeping hours (11:00 - 06:00) but once the traffic started building up, it was difficult to sleep. This wasn't a big problem for me as I had to get up anyway but thought I should mention it. If I have the pleasure of returning to this beautiful city again and have to stay over, I would definitely consider booking this hotel.
A nice hotel and a warm welcome. We asked for the room to be ready a bit early as we were on our anniversary weekend, it wasn't, but we could leave our cases safely in a room and use the facilities so we went for a swim by which time our room was ready. The only disappointing comment I have is at time of booking I mentioned our anniversary whilst we were there and yet it was not mentioned by any of the staff, a bit disappointing, but enjoyed york lots.
Great staff..really helpful as we had never stayed in York before.. reception were always super helpful! Really oldy worldly building.. just beautiful although our family room was very dated but clean! 10/15 minutes walk in to town kept us fit so quite a good location. The breakfasts however were amazing, best we have had anywhere. Eggs Royale..worth going back for... even the 4 hr drive!, went at Easter time this year and had a wonderful relaxing break.. would highly recommend!
I stayed at the Kilima hotel last weekend the staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was dated but comfortable, the biggest problem was the bathroom although it looked clean when I arrived both the bathroom door which I closed and the bedroom window was open. On returning to the room and opening the bathroom door the smell of urine was overpowering. This tainted the stay for me as the room had been paid for in advance and had I been able to cancel I would have checked out. I did not use the pool the bar or the restaurant because I felt if they couldn't get the basic level of cleanliness in the rooms I wouldn't risk the facilities I did tell the man at the front desk when I checked out and he said they were updating the bathroom floorings and if I came again they would ensure I got a better room !! As the room cost me £359 for 2 nights without breakfast I will not be returning.
My husband and I spent two nights here. Our room (21) has a king size comfortable bed. Extra blankets and pillows were available. There was an iron and ironing board in the room. Also a fan. En-suite bathroom was large. Water was always piping hot. Delighted to note that the windows in bedroom and bathroom opened. Chris the Manager was friendly and helpful as were all the staff. The dining room and bar are lovely. The breakfast was fantastic. Dinner was pretty good too. It was a fairly easy walk into the centre of York, about half a mile but plenty of buses and taxis if required. We had the swimming pool to ourselves both days which was great after a long day walking round the sites of York. I definitely would recommend you pack your swimming cozzies if you're staying here. All in all we wouldn't pass this hotel by if we're ever back in York.
Spent two nights here to meet up with my friend. If you're looking for boutique chic then don't bother staying here. If you want a comfortable, cosy, friendly and welcoming place where nothing seems to be too much trouble then it will be ideal for you. Easy to reach from the motorway, ample parking and a central location within walking distance of York centre. Swimming pool etc. if you feel so inclined. Nice evening meal with a bar and a lovely breakfast. I found some of the décor a bit questionable, nice drapes but clashed with the wallpaper but I chose to ignore this as every thing else was just lovely. We will definitely be staying again.
Those who crave lots of 'mod cons' would probably not be impressed by this hotel. Despite excellent wi-fi and free communal pc and printer, the image portrayed on the internet sites does not really describe what is, in reality a very traditional old style hotel. This in no way detracted from our stay, and we were very comfortable and impressed with an excellent service team.
Steam room and pool lovely and quiet. Perfect location, near centre of York, 10 minute walk. On a busy road but still quiet. Picked a cosy single room and it was just that. Good breakfast. Friendly staff and an entertaining owner, nice place.
Stayed at the hotel for the night and had a lovely stay! I loved our room! So close to everything in York. The staff are friendly and welcoming! :) we would both stay here again for sure!! We recommend the restaurant el gaucho as well, best steak ever x
Chris the manager is the nicest and most helpful person I've ever met in a hotel. we had a four poster bed but the problem was there was a big gap between the wall and the mattress so our pillows kept falling down the gap. not a big problem though we got the extra pillows out of the wardrobe ..nice touch...the breakfast is nice and if you want something a bit different within the menu i.e. fried eggs on toast the superb helpful staff will get it for you.. not a problem. lovely pool and if you smoke they cater for you outside. overall a really nice place only 15mins walk to the centre. the only negative is that it could do with a bit of a update especially in the bathroom. TOP TIP ... ring the hotel and they will beat any online price and you get free parking!
Can only speak highly of this hotel! All the staff were so helpful and lovely. The food is gorgeous and breakfasts fab! The chef even bought my son a pint given we were there for a few days for his 18th birthday celebrations. A really nice touch! The swimming pool is great as is the steam room. We didn't use the gym although there was ample equipment and weights. The rooms are dated however you can see this by the pictures available when you book. That said you have everything you need and the hotel was spotless. I understand plans are in place to update. Fabulous location, only a 15 minute walk into the centre. Great value for money and we will definitely return. Thank you to the kilimar hotel and all the staff for making our couple of days away so lovely. We have great memories! See you again soon x
We arrived and was welcomed with the gentlemen behind reception. Think his name was Chris. He insisted on carry our bags upstairs, even though the was not heavy. The room was ok but needs up dating. The breakfast is one of the best I've had. The staff are so nice and helpful. Everyone had a smile on there face. They only thing I could say is that it needs a little more detail to cleaning. I would definitely stay again but in one of the newer rooms. But thank you for a great stay. 10/10 for service.
Just returned from a short break in York. We really enjoyed our stay at the Kilima, Chris the manager is very helpful and welcoming. All the staff are friendly, our room was spacious and clean. Breakfast was delicious! The swimming pool was lovely had it to ourselves on both occasions. The hotel is 15 minutes walk into the City, we look forward to our next visit. Thank you again Chris for making us feel welcome. We all had a lovely break. Kalwant
stayed here for one night over the bank holiday, the man on reception made us feel really welcome he was very friendly and exceptionally good at his job. We will definitely recommend to others and wouldn't stay anywhere else if we were to return to York.
Recently returned home after spending one night in this hotel. We arrived slightly earlier than the 2pm check-in time, but fortunately our room was ready. Chris the manager was very welcoming and was very friendly to myself and my 3 young daughters and very helpful with directions! The room was just right for us all and it was nice having a swimming pool to come back to after a long day in York. We made use of the bar later in the evening and Chris was there serving. Once again friendly. Breakfast was excellent and plentiful as well. Should we visit York again I'll certainly stay here. I'd also say kids seemed to be made very welcome.
I have just enjoyed a tremendously pleasant stay at this Hotel! All staff that i encountered during my stay were friendly, professional, helpful and well presented. The food was excellent. Room clean and pleasant. I must say that i was very impressed, and i have stayed at lots of Hotels over the years, not all Best Western, but this one was up there with the best in this sector. Well done to the Kilima! By the way, a positive bonus was the swimming pool and steam room.
Myself with my wife and 5 year old grandson stayed for one night last Saturday,we requested a room at the rear and got just that no problem. The room was a decent size with both beds very comfortable.A good powerful shower is always a must and thats whet we hadwith plenty of toileteries should you need them.We needed a pool for our grandson so after looking about and being quoted a lot more elsewhere i thought well its only one night and this was the best price so i booked it and was pleases i did.The main two staff we met Chris and Anika could not have been more friendly and helpful which made our stay enjoyable. There is adequate parking on site and a bus stop over the road for a five minute or so £1 ride next to the minster,we came back in a taxi just over £5,so not bad at all thus cutting out the hassle to drive in and find a car park..We had dinner there on Saturday night which was excellent along with the following mornings breakfast. We will stay again and i would not hesitate to reccommend it to anyone considering it,not many have a nice pool and sauna to relax in this does and is very well kept. Thanks to all staff who we encountered.especially from Harry.
Stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. It's very clean although the room was a little dated and the mattress and pillows on the bed need replacing.....no support in either! The staff are very friendly and helpful and the young ones that work in the restaurant work very hard are polite and very professional.....good choice on the breakfast menu all very well cooked....compliments to the chef!
Stayed at the hotel for one night. Was really impressed with the size of the room. The staff where very friendly. I was shown to my room by a person called Mandy. Very polite and helpful asking if I had a good journey. I was delayed by 45 mins. Hotel room was clean and spacious. Offering complementary tea and coffee which was a welcome relief. Bed was nice and comfortable. With nice white crisp sheets. The only downside I have to mention is the wifi was a bit patchy, I presume that my room. (Room 21) was in the new part of the building. Menu for dinner was lovely. Food arrived hot and plenty of it! It was reasonably priced. Breakfast was good but as I was short of time I didn't have a full English. But looking at one of the other guests plate it looked appetising. I would highly recommend staying here and I will certainly will becoming back. As if was a flying visit I didn't get chance to try out the pool or the gym equipment. But next time I will book slightly longer. The staff where extremely helpful and friendly. Sam, Mandy where great and a credit to the hotel. Thanks again to the staff at the hotel for a great nights stay only sorry it wasn't long enough!
Stayed here for 2 nights.. lovely hotel, brilliant staff especially Chris. Breakfast was first class, plenty of choice and all freshly cooked. Rooms were spotless with plenty of space and equipped with everything you needed. 10 min walk to city center.. ideal base for a city break.
Had a three night stay here Aug 2017, wonderful welcome we were impressed with the friendliness of the proprietors/staff, a great place to stay good size room, clean as we would expect, good breakfast, car parking great.A little homely place to stay, Ten or Eleven mins walk from city walls, you need a good pair of shoes for York anyway to see the best of places. we would recommend this hotel if you want to walk to the city. We would certainly use the Kilima again. The Hotel is located well, easy to find on the main route into York from the A1
Stayed here for one night for business and it's a very reasonably priced pleasant hotel. The food was good, the service great, everything clean and apparently only a 10 minute walk into the city so no complaints at all!
Stayed here two nights And was delighted. Average price hotel manager at reception was delightful and funny and very helpful. Room comfortable meal in restaurant at night absolutely first class had the swimming pool all to myself. Only thing might not suit some people creaky floors everywhere but it's an old hotel and full of character so what can you expect. All in all would recommend. And only a short walk into the town centre.
Stayed at the kilima for 3 weeks with work, and was more than impressed. 1st impressions are that it seems a little dated with the decor, however that is the only negative point i can make. The staff were incredibly welcoming and couldnt have helped out more. Rooms were well kept by housekeeping, and all amenities well stocked. The restaurant/bar staff were always very chatty, and Laura made the stay away from home even more bearable with a regular supply of speckled hen and a friendly chat! The chef couldn't have done any better...the food was VERY good, and extremely well presented. The steak was cooked to perfection, and the cuts of meat were spot on. Although the menu range is rather limited, the staff went out their way to provide a variety of different meals to mix things up a little for me. All in all a very enjoyable stay, and i would recommend the hotel to anyone staying in York.
Stayed here on Saturday 15th July for races day . Not far from train station and shops lovely clean hotel . Staff can't do enough for you especially the lovely guy on reception however it's all in general nice . Breakfast was lovely and staff nice too thankyou very much we will be back
Came for my birthday weekend. Hotel is nice, staff very friendly. The room we stayed in had the creakiest bed and floorboards ever, you could hear other people in there rooms moving about and talking so not great when your trying to get to sleep. The room was very clean though. Breakfast was really nice, plenty of choice. Nice little bar for an evening drink.
The staff are lovely and the hotel seems very clean however Best Western need to put some seriously financial investment into the property. The decor is extremely dated and chintzy. The soft furnishings are probably around 20 or so years old. We felt quite disappointed when we arrived as in comparison to other hotels we considered for the same price (£166) for one night stay- this just didn't compare. We generally have a night or weekend away every month and I've got to say this was the most tired and dated hotel we've ever stayed in. It really isn't the staffs fault and I feel quite strongly that Best Western are doing the staff an injustice by failing to invest in the hotel and I don't think many guests would return following an initial stay- us included.
Lovely friendly staff on reception and in restaurant. We were made to feel welcome and given directions and tips of where to stop off for drinks on the way into town, which was a very pleasant 15 mins walk. we had room 27 which had a really comfortable 4 poster bed and a separate little sitting room with tv and kettle in which was lovely to sit and read the paper in in the mornings. the bathroom was clean although in need of a little updating but had lovely white towels, and a corner bath with a shower over it. The pool was great and just big enough for a little swim before a lovely breakfast! everything was well organised and such lovely polite staff and a great choice of food too. We will book directly next time to avoid the parking fee now we know to do so. The hotel website does state clearly there is no charge if you book direct but we had already booked through booking.com. We would definitely recommend this hotel for location and facilities but especially for being made to feel so welcome.
Used this hotel as a one night stop off . I always believe that good staff make the experience great and i couldnt fault the warmth and kindness of all of the team that run this hotel. How nice to be greeted by happy faces!!! Pool was fab - and clean - Breakfast was quick to arrive and hot ! The room i booked was OK - The bed was really comfy and the sheets clean and crisp . We did have a room facing the main road and slept with the windows open but the noise didnt bother me - slept like a log Niggles - the room was tired (you can expect that with years of foot fall) but the nets were really dirty . Net curtains are cheap to replace and new ones can make hell of a difference to a room! On leaving , we were suddenly charged with a £5 parking bill- we weren't told about it or warned about it beforehand which i think is bad business practice , especially when other customers parked there free of charge ! I know its only £5 but hidden charges always leave a bad taste in any ones mouth ! Overall would recommend this hotel .
Booked this last minute and what a great find ! Easy to find and good car parking. A very warm welcome from Chris and his colleague ( sorry I didn't catch his name ) and my case was kindly carried to my room and en route explanation of the hotel and facilities. I was lucky to have the pool to myself for a quick swim as I arrived mid afternoon - fab. I had a single room which was clean, tidy and functional and had everything you would need plus it had proper mug for a coffee in the morning ! If I were to have one tiny little criticism, the room was hot and on the main road so with the window open it was a touch noisey but there was a fan in the wardrobe to help. In reception was a table of handy bits and bobs that you could pick up if you had forgotten anything i.e. cotton balls, extra milk - great touch . Good location to the centre - 5 mins in a cab. Chris checked me out in the morning and again was friendly and efficient and encouraged me to book directly with the hotel next time I stayed, which again , I thought was a nice personal touch. I would definitely stay again !
my wife booked this hotel for a suprise birthday weekend away to York. arrived at the hotel on Friday as we greeted by very friendly staff on reception, and was shown to our room on the first floor. very large room which was clean and tidy.bed was a good size and quite comfy. bathroom was small without a window and did need a bit of updating and cleaning.pipes behind the sink needed a good clean.toilet seat was loose as well.there was a burning smell from the fan in the bathroom which we did report,so we used the light above the mirror instead which was fine. shower was powerful and the hot water is very hot!!! tv in the room was small especially for a room of the size we were in , most hotels offer at 32" screens now. tea and coffee making facilities in the room are good and there are plenty more t-bags and coffee sachets in reception if you needed any more. the bar/dining area was very clean and tidy and the breakfast selection was excellent and cooked to order as when it reached your table it was still hot. did not have evening dinner at the hotel but from what we saw on the menu was a very limited selection. the hotel is a 10-15 minute walk to the town so we were able to leave the car in the hotel car park to not worry about looking for car parks in the town. we did not use the leisure facilities so cannot comment on those. would stay at this hotel again but for the price my wife paid, we have stayed at better ones for less. also i dont think there is a lift here either.
Stayed for 1 night. Staff were really friendly and helpful. The reason we pick this hotel was the swimming pool, it did not disappoint. The pool was great, a good size 10m and not busy at all. The room was large enough for us three, a little tired especially the bathroom. Very quiet location, we slept with the window wide open as it was quiet hot and muggy. Since there is no aircon not somewhere I would stay in the summer.
We had a four poster bed, quite a novelty. Lovely big clean room, no noise. Breakfast was freshly made, staff all friendly and helpful. In the hallway there was lots of bits and pieces you may have forgotten to bring, all free, great touch. There was a fabulous pool and a small adequate air conditioned gym. There was a bar and a restaurant in a lovely cool area under the Hotel. A guest lounge, tables set up outside the lounge if you wanted to smoke. Free secure parking. We cant wait to go back to stay at this friendly Hotel, quite a little gem!
Firstly can I say the staff there are lovely. A warm friendly welcome and very helpful. The hotel is located about a 25 minutes walk from the city centre, restaurants and bars. It is the right side of the city for the horse racing. There is a swimming pool and steam room and the car park at the rear is big enough so you are likely to get a spot. We stayed in a four poster bed room which was a nice size. The hotel is an older building so expect creaking floorboards in the room and people walking past. There were two sash windows with internal double glazing. We stayed on a very hot weekend. Only one of the sash windows could open so the room was very hot. They do provide an oscillating desk top fan, which was used overnight and helped a bit. We planned for a hot stay, as most UK hotels mostly cater for colder climes so the rooms are hot. We brought a sheet which we used instead of the thick quilt you get in the rooms, and glad we did. The main down side of the room, is ours was at the front of the building. The hotel is on a busy road and traffic noise is very bad. It would pay to see if you can get a room at the rear of the hotel. We had to sleep with the window open, due to the heat, so the traffic noise was worse. I am sure in colder months, it won't be so apparent. The breakfast was nice with a good choice and again the staff were cheery and attentive. Not a bad hotel for a short break.
We were greeted by a very friendly receptionist who showed us to our room. We had room 1, a four poster which was clean and comfortable, not overly spacious but fine for a weekend. Room had two chairs and small table - ideal for coffee. Refreshment tray well stocked. Bathroom was a decent size and clean. The bar area was lovely although both nights we stayed we sat on our own. The breakfasts were freshly cooked to order. We ate in the restaurant one evening which again was underused. There were only two other couples eating. The food itself was lovely. The pool is a bonus. The hotel is an old rectory with traditional areas at the front. The modern extension to the back includes more rooms and pool.
We stayed here for one night whilst in york for a party. The hotel staff were friendly and welcoming. The entrance hall is lovely and there is a pool. Our room was perfectly acceptable but old and tired (especially the bathroom) which was disappointing for £157.50 a night. It was clean however and nice tea/coffee facilities. The highlight for us was the breakfast. Eggs Royals - YUM! This in itself justified the price tag for us. Well located close up station and 20mins walk from town centre. Would recommend.
We stayed at The Best Western Kilima Hotel in April for an overnight stay. we were very early for our room and went to reception where we were greeted by the Manager and advised that it wasn't a problem leaving the car while we headed off to the city centre. He kindly gave us a map and told us the quickest way to get to all the attractions. we returned around 6pm and escorted to our room where everything was explained to us regards the room and facilities. The room was lovely. we could not fault it, the bed was so comfy, room had everything and more, there were even replacement tea and coffee in reception which you could help yourself to. Later on we went out for a meal and advised of some good places to go, the receptionist kindly rang a taxi for us to save our aching legs lol. we returned to a lovely warm room and settled into the comfy bed. Breakfast was amazing, plenty of cereal, toast and yogurts with a good choice of full English etc.
Good location for a short break in York. Not over priced either. Friendly staff, clean modern rooms. The bar and restaurant are located in the basement. Very quiet down there. Most people are walking into York to eat, so don't be suprised if you are the only one in the bar area.
A very nice hotel, decor is a little dated in the rooms, ours looked freshly papered and painted it just could do with the curtains and furnishings to match Service was very good and all the staff make you very welcome, especially the manager Chris. The bed was very comfy and I slept relatively well however my husband did not due to the issue of other guests allowing the doors to bang shut.Breakfast was very good and we would stay here again
Very happy with our 3 night stay here, hotel is within easy walking distance of York centre 10/ 15 minutes, pool excellent, breakfast excellent, suited our needs perfectly, also very easy to get in and out of York from this hotel
We stayed here for one night, it cost £125 which included the room, pool facilities and breakfast. The welcome was great and staff were consistently good throughout our stay. The room was spacious, with a four poster bed. The bathroom was spotless and we enjoyed the little extras (drinks, iron, hairdryer). However, it needs modernising as the furniture and decor was a little dated. The breakfast was also great, with plenty of options. Lovely historical place to stay with easy access to the city centre.
We chose to stay here as it was a good price for the date we wanted and the swimming pool was an important feature. The pool is a large enough for a good swim (10 x 5 m), which I enjoyed before breakfast. The bed was very comfortable. It still has an olde world feel and the floorboards really creak! There is a car park behind the hotel though you have to drive down quite a narrow driveway to access it. Although I know York well, it was not easy to spot the entrance for driving in off Holgate Hill, and when there is a lot of traffic then getting out of the drive and onto the road, especially turning right to drive into the town centre, can be a bit hairy!
Great hotel, wonderful staff and fantastic facilities. 15min walk from city centre. Room was clean and shower was great! We will definitely stay here again when visiting York. Breakfast had good selection and could alter to suit.
We booked using our Tesco vouchers and we used £500 worth for three nights over the Easter weekend. This seemed a lot even if it was Easter and York. My wife had some problems with road noise, and noise coming from the next room (thin walls?) on the first night but slept like a log the next two. On our first day we left the tidy room sign showing on the door handle. When we got back it had been turned around (“Do not disturb”) and consequently the room had not been cleaned. No real problem there – but oddly I was told the same thing had happened to a woman in the adjacent room 15. Strange because the doors, although near the entrance, are set back behind another door and away from mischievous eyes. The room was nice and big but the bathroom was a bit scraggy and would be absolutely freezing in mid-winter (a portable heater is provided). Breakfasts were very good in an inviting restaurant area. Yes, it's a bit of a walk to the centre. This was not really a problem apart from when we came out of the marvellous Easter Sunday service at the Minster to find it was pouring with rain and well set (it had been sunny when we went in and the dear old BBC website forecast from a couple of days previously had got it badly wrong). It was too far to consider walking back to get our wet weather gear and still be in time for a timed entrance to the Chocolate Story. I liked the fact that top ups of milk cartons, tea bags, bathroom supplies, etc were freely available in the reception area. Wi-Fi worked well. We were so busy using our York City Passes that we didn't get to even see the pool! Good tip – ask about the shortcut to the National Railway Museum. This becomes a 10-15 minute walk, so is handy.
Had 2 nights at the Kilima hotel over Easter, and found it to be a lovely place to stay when visiting York. It is conveniently situated within 10 minutes walk of the city walls and has a really good restaurant and swimming pool. Breakfast and dinner were well cooked and served by efficient friendly staff. We had a spacious, clean double room with pristine white sheets and a comfortable king size bed, also there was Excellent tv and wifi reception.I would definitely recommend a stay here and will be returning there ourselves in the future.
If you want a comfortable friendly base, an easy walk from York City centre, you would be hard pressed to find a better place to stay than the Kilima Hotel. We arrived early and left our car in the car park, and given directions to a nice walk along the wall to the centre of the city. A few hours later we meandered back for check in, to be met by Chris, the manager who gave us a run down of all the facilities on offer including a swimming pool, gym facilities and steam room. The room was a 4 poster, very clean and comfortable, en suite and even had complimentary creaky floorboards which was completely in keeping with the age of the property. The bar was located in the cellars and even had happy hour, with black sheep ale to keep the hubby happy and a reasonably priced wine selection. All the staff were so friendly, nothing was too much trouble, and breakfast had a good selection of fresh fruit, cereal, yoghurt and cooked breakfast. All in all a lovely break in comfortable surroundings, I would have no hesitation in staying here again, but I would ring and book direct with them rather than using the Internet.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and during my 2 nights stay it was blissfully peaceful. Breakfast was part buffet, part order and was lovely. Had the pool and steam room to myself and there was a small patio. Restaurant/bar were pleasantly decorated but my twin room was a bit tired and small. The most annoying thing though was the creaking floorboards. I was concerned about walking around in my room at night in case it disturbed neighbouring guests. There were areas e.g. in the locker room which could have been cleaner. The city centre was about a 15 min pleasant walk. I may stay there again, but will check other deals first. However, as these sites like booking.com charge hotels 30% for rooms they book, I was told that the hotel could ALWAYS offer a better deal
Lovely, friendly place to stay, rooms comfortable. private parking, short walk in to the center of York. Breakfast plentiful. Swimming pool a must. Not far from railway station - local shops close by. already booked our 3rd stay here.
My daughter and I had a twin room at the Kilima Hotel for 2 nights, wish we could have stayed longer but as we had travelled by train with return tickets we couldn't extend our stay. On arrival we received a very warm welcome from Chris and as we was a little early and our room wasn't quite ready he made us both a hot chocolate and then asked what we hoped to do whilst in York. We gave him a rough idea of our plans and he gave us a map and loads of helpful information about walking the city walls, where to get the buses etc. Our room was nice with 2 full size single beds which were comfy. The over bath shower was powerful - the room had a little table and chairs plus a dressing table area. We never used the refreshments tray but it was well stocked with a variety of coffee and teas. There was also a table in reception with extra refreshments. The swimming pool was very nice, a good size - this was one of the main reasons for booking this hotel and we wasn't disappointed. Breakfast was plentiful and beautifully cooked, we were served by a young boy who was very professional and pleasant. We didn't have the evening meal at the hotel as we had afternoon tea at The Grand one day and was too full to eat an evening meal and we had already booked a local Italian restaurant for the last night but the menu looked good and had we stayed longer would have eaten there. We did use the bar and it was comfortable and relaxing. On checking out Chris told us about phoning direct to book to get a better price - I had used booking.com as I always thought they gave you the best prices. Would definitely stay there again.
We visited York during the school half term and managed to book this lovely family run hotel. It is a 5 minute drive from the city and situated in a peaceful neighbourhood. We had booked a parking space which only cost £5 a day (very reasonable). The hotel itself had a warm and inviting atmosphere. The staff were very accommodating and friendly. I had asked for a bottle of prosecco to be in the room on arrival which there was. The room has all the amenities expected, the bed was very comfortable and large. Tea and coffee making facilities were available in the room. The bathroom had a shower and bath combo which was clean. Breakfast was included and it is situated in the newly refurbished dining area. It was a well cooked and presented breakfast with all the trimmings, delicious. Cereals, juices, toast and yoghurt were also on offer. My partner has an egg allergy and they were very accommodating. The dining area is also open for dinner. We seemed to be the only ones to use it, which is unfortunate because the food was delicious and very reasonable (3 course meal for £20). Definitely should eat dinner here if you have the opportunity. The hotel also has a pool and sauna. The pool is very clean, a good temperature and very well lit with natural light from the large wall windows down the one side. The sauna is good but could have been better if it was cleaner. More attention to this would be better. The bar has a happy hour which is very reasonable. Overall a lovely hotel where the customer comes first. Would definitely recommend it to anyone and will be staying here when we return.
Wanted a reasonably priced hotel for a short break. Easy parking and easy walking distance to the centre. Bed very comfy. Pleasant restaurant and bar. Cooked breakfast included in price and very good. Staff excellent. Also has a lovely looking little swimming pool. Would visit again.
Stayed here for one night. Rooms are good and clean, beds are comfortable. A nice bar as well serving nice black sheep beer. Good swimming pool available as well. Enough parking space, walking distance to the city centre
Lovely little hotel, 10 min walk from city centre and station. Some great restaurants and nice litte pubs and bars on route. Because it's out of the way a bit it's very quiet. The staff are super friendly, and can't do enough to help you.
Lovely staff Clean and tidy but very dated couldn't walk around the room without the most annoying floorboards that squeaked consistently that defiantly needs addressing ! Also couldn't open windows for fresh air no evening restaurant either .
A good hotel for visiting York. Secure Parking available and an easy walk into the city center with all its attractions. Large room with a comfortable bed. The reception staff were very welcoming and helpful and even escorted us to our bed room which is a rear occurrence these days. Breakfast was good and varied.
Came to York for a single nights stay. Was greeted very warmly by the guy on reception. Very friendly and helpful, gave lots of help when asked for directions etc. The room was lovely and and, considering it was cold and wet outside. The decor is traditional but stylish. Really clean and comfortable room. Lots of facilities in the cupboard, iron and extra room heaters if needed. Nice size TV with lots of freeview channels. Swimming pool and steam room were a nice touch. Changing rooms with fresh towels, so no problem using them. The breakfast room in the morning is really awesome. Brilliant choice of breakfast inc eggs benedict, pouched salmon and eggs, full English , vegetarian breakfast and more. I would really recommend this hotel. Made my stay in York really special.
Ideally placed (15 mins walk to city centre) and with car parking and a swmming pool made this an easy choice for me. I wasn't disappointed. The hotel is well run and they try to cater for all your needs. The breakfast was excellent. The best fresh fruit salad I have ever had in a hotel...really fresh fruit and freshly prepareed not all squishy. The pool though small, is adequate for exercise and kept clean. Pleanty of car parking space. The room was clean but we suffered a bit of traffice noise in the morning. I would return.
Looking for somewhere to eat early evening, before going to Wiltons music hall, took a chance on this restaurant. Lovely charming helpful staff. Delicious fresh cooked Turkish food. And lovely spot. Was just what we wanted. We chose from the standard two course meal which was very reasonable. Wine delicious. Confident recommendation.
We normally stay at a small hotel close to the city centre, however they have taken the car park away. so we decided to try this hotel and we are glad we did! Private car park at the rear, close to city centre (15 min stroll). The staff and service were excellent and the room was very clean and well appointed . The room was next to the lighting transformer room so there was a small constant humming noise. However it,s certainly not a dealbreaker for this hotel choice! I have to say the breakfast was delicious, lots of choice and very well cooked and tasty. We will certainly be staying here again on our next visit to York.
My family - 6 adults and 2 small children stayed at the end of Oct 2016 for a long weekend to celebrate a special birthday. York was chosen as we all live scattered around the country and we had a great time. The rooms were large, clean and of a very high standard. The shower was powerful and the bathroom large, Having a pool was ideal for the small children to use up energy and perfect to relax for the grown ups. Clean, warm and very inviting. Breakfasts were fresh and lots of choice with a help yourself cold buffet with full English breakfasts and other hot dishes served to your table. My only comment was on both days my poached eggs were cooked hard :-( The hotel is on a great bus route and at £1.20 in to the city or a lovely 20 min walk, the hotel is in a prime spot. The manager, Chris, is the jewel in the crown to this gem of a hotel. Wether at the front desk welcoming or helping new arrivals, serving drinks at the well stocked bar , arranging taxis, help with bus timetables or replenishing the 'help yourself to forgotten items' collection in the foyer.. toothpaste, razors, toothbrush etc, nothing was too much trouble. Always smiling, always happy, Chris and his team have the best kept secret hotel in York sorted. Thank you from us
My family & I visited the Kilima Hotel for my mum's 70th birthday. We were a party of 6 adults & 2 children & the hotel was ideal for us all. The children loved the indoor swimming pool & the adults enjoyed the cellar bar. The rooms were large, clean & very comfortable. The breakfast was plentiful & delicious. A bus stop just outside the hotel takes you into the centre of York or you can walk it in about 20 minutes. A special mention goes to Chris, the hotel manager, who seemed to be omnipresent & was always friendly & informative. Thanks Chris!
Weve been going to this hotel on and off for about 11 years for various breaks at various times of years We stopped mid October for my birthday weekend, the hotel is in good walking distance to town or short taxi ride and is quiet with on site parking with good facilities and pool. The staff are very pleasant and the breakfast was of good choice and cooked to order. The manager Chris is realy excellent at is customer service and will help you with anything you need. We find now that tho we love this hotel it is starting to lapse in room quality and needs a bit of modernisation in the bathrooms and a bit more on the cleaning of the rooms . The carpet was in need of a good hoover and the linenen was in poor quality as we discoverd the next morning the bed sheet was torn and to our dismay it was not changed for the next night. They have recently put new carpets down in the public areas and new lighting in the basement bar and breakfast room which has improved the space. If you do decide to choose this hotel for you're next break book direct with the hotel to save on room rate and parking cost and also rooms may be availabe tho not on line.
The hotel met all our expectations when we spent 3 happy days there. As a large family group we were grateful that they managed to give us three rooms close to each other. The welcome was warm and the staff friendly, attentive and helpful throughout. It was comfortable and quiet. A huge plus point was the swimming pool which gave our four grandchildren hours of pleasure. The location was fine - I would challenge the visitor who claimed that it was 'miles out of town'. We walked to Micklegate Bar (ie the Walls and therefore the start of the centre) in 15-20 minutes with a five-year old every day and, if you don't want to walk, there is a very good bus service from outside the hotel, taking only 5 minutes into the centre.
just returned from a night at this hotel, school holidays so not a great deal left as i left it too late, hotel was nice, we usually use novotel or something similar but chose this as it had a pool, room was nice and bed lovely and comfy, bar area was small and cosy, breakfast was excellent, the cooked full english was purfect. Weve been to newer hotels but this was a nice break, only a short walk outside town centre, i would use it abain if the price was right.
Really enjoyed a night here when passing through York. Very handy for the city centre, about 10 minutes walk to the city walls. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was tasty and the children enjoyed a splash in the clean, warm swimming pool. Great value, clean and tidy with friendly atmosphere.
Superb hotel really friendly staff who treat you more like family than paying guests The rooms were individual and a nice comfortable bed. The whole place is very clean and tidy. good thick walls no noise from other rooms. Good location 10 minutes walk to station or 15 mins. to city centre. Breakfast was excellent good hot food served on hot plates makes the difference. The pool and sauna were great The only slight down side is there are no evening meals available, there is a bar with various drinks available until midnight Definitely use this hotel again.
We booked this Hotel as it was advertised as "This Victorian building is around 15 minutes' walk from York city centre" 30 minute's more like ! It's badly in need of a refit , we paid £179 for a single night and were expecting a lot more . I stay in Travel Lodge/ Premier Inns most weeks for work and wanted something more . regret did not get it . OK, there is a pool and steam room . Steam input scalded my leg and my partned slipped a recieved a bruse in the pool , by slipping on the steps . Brekfast was ruined by the waiting staff watching the guests and giggling smirking ... very un professional . On departure the receptionist did not ask the customary "was every thing to your satisfaction ?" probably cos she was sick of greating disgruntled guests !
Thanks for a lovely nights stay in your hotel, myself and my husband had a great time. There are some negatives, we thought that the bathroom was dated and the decor of the bedroom also a little dated. The hotel was really warm too. Now for the positives which far outweigh the negatives. For the price we had a great stay, nice touches, very welcoming and great for a nice walk into York. We used the pool, which again for the price of our stay was a nice touch. For those who have left negative comments regarding being used to far superior hotels, then they would have paid far superior prices. Nice inexpensive short break. Many thanks
Last minute stay. Chris is a fantastic manager and a credit to the hotel. Breakfast was cooked to order and staff very helpful. Rooms are clean. Free car park and small walk to centre York. Would visit again.
We stayed for three nights. The room was comfortable and well equipped and the breakfasts were excellent. You can catch a bus into the centre of York from opposite the hotel which is most convenient. We weren't able to use the pool for personal reasons but it looked very inviting and well set up. One tip- if you ring to book you can get the car parking free but if you do it online then there is a £5 a day charge and the lady gave us a special room rate!
I have stayed at this hotel for a couple of weeks now. Really consistently good, the breakfasts are cooked to order and the best one is Eggs Royale by far! I would highly recommend the pool for a wind down and although the restaurant is no longer open, the Deliveroo service is amazing and you can eat dinner downstairs in the bar/dining area. Rooms are a decent size and clean. The staff are really friendly and helpful especially Matt. Also parking is free which is great for being so central. Only downside is it is a tad on the outside of the main restaurants and bars but fine if you like to walk and the racecourse is within great running distance if you like to run. Thanks for making my stay great on all occasions!
A great place to stay! The amenities are good and the staff are extremely friendly. The rooms and public areas are very clean and it's set in a quiet location, whilst still being fairly close to the local attractions. The children loved the pool.
Staff are all pleasant on arrival and helpful. Shown to our dark room and immediately noticed the smell. Strong air freshner and open window. I guess this is to disguise another odour but was very off putting. If it hadn't been so late I would of tried for a refund. We didn't complain as really didn't want to put more of a downer on our break and just put it down to not researching properly. Bathroom very dated with a stained sink. Small cheap wardrobe and furnishings. I would class it as a large B & B not a hotel. Has a small bar below reception which we didn't bother with. Breakfast which you have to order , not buffet style, was not to my liking as I like quality produce and couldn't eat mine. Stuck to some toast. I really wish we had researched better before booking as we like to stay in nice larger hotels with a bit of luxury and didn't realise this wasn't what was on offer. So I guess this is partially our own fault. I would rather pay a bit more and get quality although £400 for three nights is by no means cheap. We had found others more central for a bit more and wish we had paid the extra. The pros Bed was large and comfortable. 20 mins walk to centre of York. Quiet location. I see plenty of good reviews and I am by no means saying this place is awful because it isn't . We just like and expect better.
I'm thinking perhaps I was put in one of the few older rooms judging by the other reviews. The receptionist on arrival was really helpful and friendly (hence the average rating) but the decor and cleanliness in room 16 on the ground floor was dreadful. The decor was a mismatch of migraine-inducing patterns, carpet worn and bathroom very tired. There was a great deal of noise, doors banging etc. as people came in and out of the main door. Perhaps if I'd been given a room in the extended part of the hotel it would've been better.
Good location just outside central York. Excellent off street car parking. Indoor swiming pool. Very good amenities and breakfasts. Older building. My room floor creeked quite badly and walls are pretty thin. Staff were excellent. Would stay here again.
Very welcoming and helpful staff. Breakfast was excellent. Loved the swimming pool. Would definitely stay again. Nice touches in the room like an iron and ironing board. Very good location and within walking distance of everything.
Convenient location on the western edge of the city centre, about 20 minutes walk from the Cathedral, and benefiting from good on site parking. The property is well presented with nice decor in common parts and very nice, semi subterranean, characterful dining room. My room was comfortably furnished with many nice touches and a decent en suite. I had a very good night's sleep followed by an excellent breakfast. The hotel also benefits from leisure facilities which on this occasion I did not use. I was pleased by the very friendly welcome, assistance to my room with awkward baggage and just general helpfulness and sunny disposition of all staff. Good value for money and I would certainly return.
Stayed here after two nights in Carlisle with my mum. Definitely preferred this hotel. On check in the reception lady was juggling phone calls and visitors arriving at the same time. She was very friendly and polite and took the time to show guests to their room pointing out the dining room and pool areas and times of availability. Room (19) was spacious and clean although a little warm during the night even with window open. On the next day my son and his girlfriend who live locally visited us and we went into town for a wander. He was able to leave his car in the car park whilst we took my car into town. The hotel is within walking distance of the city centre though we drove as not sure how my mum who is quite elderly would manage the hill on the return. Breakfast on both mornings was very good and the dining room although in the basement was well lit and bright. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and made the stay even more welcoming. Didn't use the pool but round certainly take the opportunity next time. Yes would definitely stay again.
I am afraid our stay at this hotel started on a negative note from the off... we arrived about 20 minutes earlier than check in time and the rooms we not ready... not a problem at all but the fact the receptionist seemed to have no time for us at all turned out to not be the best welcome to the hotel. We asked to maybe have a bite to eat but were told there is no meals being served which I found strange. After we headed out for the day we returned to check in and the new guy in reception was very friendly and welcoming but it was just one guy!!! We realised why the previous receptionist maybe was a little distracted, they had one person running the hotel for everything - reception, bar, guest requests, swimming pool/gym... Later that day the kids became hungry and we were again told no food was served not even sandwiches or anything but we were referred to Just Eat web site - not ideal for families!! Alongside this a pint of Carlsberg that tasted like the pipes hadn't been cleaned and finding a tag in the drawer from a previous customers crotchless size 10's from Ann Summers I do have one positive - the breakfast was well staffed and OK!!
Lovely hotel, very attentive staff, very welcoming pool after walking all day. The hotel its self was warm and welcoming. Public areas were decorated nicely and well kept. Room 11 however was not. Tiny window in a large room that allowed no natural light. Saying that bed was comfortable allowing for a good nights sleep. Would I stay again? Yes
Family of 5 stayed here, really good value as you get a full breakfast included and access to the swimming pool and fitness area. It was great to get back after walking round sunny York and relax in the pool with the kids. The family room we stayed in was brilliant, a 4 poster bed for the adults and a separated small room for the kids, done out as 3 beds and with plenty space. Little extras are thought of such as plentiful towels, iron, tv in both the living spaces. Would 100% stay again and recommend to those looking for a family room in York.
this was our second stay here and we loved it. Bank holiday weekend away with our 2 adult daughters. Lovely rooms, great staff and a lovely pool and steam room too. Breakfast is excellent with great choice and very friendly staff and lovely hot food served with a smile. We will definitely stay here again, Chris and his team are great and very welcoming.
Couples night away from it all, ready for a bit of culture and a nice evening out for meal. Lovely pool, friendly staff, good breakfast. Wonderful relaxing city break for a night. Thanks to Chris and team!
Fantastic hotel I would not hesitate to stay there again. The only negative point for us was that the room decor needs to be lighter as the room was a little on the dark side.Very helpful staff nothing was to much trouble.
Fourth time at this hotel, usually for the races, and it is always excellent value. Comfortable rooms and an excellent breakfast merely enhance ones experience and the charming staff are always keen to help with any requests. The fact that we, along with many others, return every year is testimony to the quality and the badinage with Chris throughout ones stay is an added bonus!
Came across this hotel by chance, it was my 1st visit to York; beautiful place. Back to the hotel, it's not new but it's exceptionally well kept. The staff are super friendly, the main man Chris goes out of his way to make your stay pleasant and pleasurable. Can't really give this hotel a good enough review. 10 min walk from the city centre, pool, sauna, steam room in the hotel, ample parking. But what I enjoyed most was not queuing for mass produced breakfast, a full and varied menu cooked fresh and served to your table. Small outside balcony for smokers, age group varied from young to old. Give it a go, Chris and his staff will be sure to give you a warm friendly welcome. I will definitely go back and 100% recommend to others.
Hi, Stayed at this hotel 01/08/16 in family room number 11. Room was very large with two big beds. Swimming pool is a nice touch and great for relaxing. We had the pool to ourselves as the hotel was very quiet. Great 'FREE' carpark around the back of the hotel in its rear grounds. Nice cosey little hotel bar and very reasonable prices £3.60/pint.
My fiancé & I stayed here for 2 nights. We had a very positive visit. The hotel was spotlessly clean, & light. The pool was clean, clear & well kept. Breakfast was a good selection, plenty of it, the cooked & buffet. What made the stay for us was the staff. The manager Chris was welcoming, helpful, interested in our visit, helpful, immensely cheerful despite the long hours he was there, greeting us first thing in the morning & serving us a final drink in the bar just before midnight. The young staff who served us the morning are to be praised, they were professional & friendly in their approach to their job. A really great stay & we will certainly stay three again.
Hi just returned from 2 day stay in York and this friendly hotel yeh it's old style property but has a fabulous indoor pool a definite plus for a hotel !! and lovely clean rooms . Staff all very friendly and would definitely return , and to the two lovely smiley ladies on reception great front of house first impression and always had time for a chat . Well Done .
We needed somewhere to stay for a night in York after a visit to see the mystery plays and decided on the Kilima. It was very easy to find being on one of the main routes into York. The hotel has a large car park that had loads of space in it during our stay. The hotel is an old vicarage with a large extension built on to the back. We were in the old part of the hotel, so the rooms have character (to say the least). Not really up to modern standards, but ok for the night. Breakfast was good. The staff were cheerful and helpful (they let us get into one of the rooms early to dump our bags as we wanted a day sightseeing) and the hotel is well situated for a visit to York ... and easy 20 minute walk
The hotel is situated within easy reach of the historic city of York with its multitude of attractions. On arrival we were greeted by The Manager Chris. The booking in process was quick efficient and friendly. The room was clean and the decor was attractive. There were some pleasant little additions to the room such as an electric fan which was very useful as the night of our stay the weather was more than a little humid. We enjoyed the pool which we had to ourselves. The water was just right and the steam room was a joy. There were ample supplies of tea and coffee in our room. The bar area is situated in the basement of the building an it is accessed by a flight of stairs. The staff were all pleasant and friendly and the hotel permeated a sense of calm. The breakfast was excellent with a good choice of hot and cold drinks as well as cereals and toast etc. The English Breakfast was cooked to perfection and the cleanliness and efficiency of the set up was a fine example of how to do a job well. This was our first stay at this hotel and when returning to York we will look no further than this place. We were accompanied by our 8 years old grandson who very much enjoyed the stay and the good wit and humour of the manager Chris, who made him feel especially welcome. Well done to all.
We decided to revisit York after a 21 year break and weren't disappointed. Having booked only a couple of days before we went we appreciated that we may not have been left with a prime hotel but we were pleased with our choice. The hotel is old fashioned but charming and although our room was a little dated it was clean and very comfortable. All the staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the pool and steam room, which we had to ourselves before walking into York for an evening out (about 15 mins into the centre) but decided that we would get a taxi home rather than walking back on what is a busy main road. That said, our room was quiet (we overlooked the car park) and we had the added pleasure of seeing a steam train out of our bedroom window in the morning! The bar area and breakfast room in the basement was charming and we enjoyed having breakfast cooked to order and to our liking rather than the usual buffet efforts you get in larger establishments. Check in and out times were better than we have elsewhere - not being early risers we appreciated not having to be out at the crack of dawn! All in all a pleasant stay where we would go again.
I stay in a lot of Best Western hotels and this is the worst I've ever been in. Outside of my room the hotel was below par. Location wasn't great by any means but close enough to walk into town. I was put in a small, depressing, dilapidated room which was ridiculously hot and uncomfortable. I asked to move but was told there was nothing they could do as the hotel was full. I was also offered a refund but not really told how to go about it. Maybe the other rooms are OK (judging by the other reviews). I'll be totally avoiding this place in future. Staff were fine and friendly- it's not their fault.
We had a good night at the hotel. Very friendly. Great breakfast, w Included in the price. We will stay again. For a 3star hotel it was very good. A short walk to the city centre, very clean and good parking.
This hotel was in a very good location, you could walk into the centre of York in about 10 mins. The staff were very helpful and friendly. Breakfast was lovely and the evening meal great. The Railway museum is very close and is worth a visit.
We stayed here for my wife's birthday in March and were very impressed. A lovely hotel, very clean and modern including the room, and the pool was great. It was only a short walk to York town centre, around 10 minutes. A special mention has to go out to the receptionist, unfortunately I've forgotten his name but he was very friendly and most welcoming. He also allowed us an extra few chocolate rice crispie cakes from the reception desk! Hats off the the chef on those! We didn't have breakfast or an evening meal so can't comment on the food, but from our experience we'd highly recommend it!
A 15 minute walk out of the city but there are inexpensive taxis and a bus stop outside. Breakfast was superb. The lounge has tables for people to bring in take away meals though they don't do dinner themselves.
Single lady placed in a ground floor with window which had broken catch and therefore no security: Door handle loose and difficult to unlock: poor bedside lighting: Although guest small to shower experienced difficulty due to the shower being right under a sloping ceiling. Complained on entry to the room the first night of the extremely unpleasant smell to which I was told it was an old building. There was also the smell of someone having smoked in the bathroom and near the bathroom. Owing to York being booked due to the Yorkshire Show I was unable to obtain a room elsewhere otherwise would have cancelled the second night. Told that breakfast wasn't served until 7.30am I could have a packed one - banana bad, croissants had been kept in fridge and therefore inedible, replaced but still inedible. 2nd day told toast/coffee available from 7.10 but found cooked being served! When commenting on the inconsistency about breakfast was told this was served if and when Chef was ready. Very dark bedroom and dingy. Such a pity as the building does have character and would certainly benefit from more than a little TLC. Instead of any extensions surely better to refurbish and certainly not what I would have thought to come under the Best Western umbrella. Receptions friendly but no sight of any management. £85 for bed and a non-existent breakfast - unbelievable!!!!!!! Even allowing for the Yorkshire show and heavy bookings in York.
My partner and I had booked a week off work with no plans, he found this hotel and decided we would have a few days away, so we had 3 days 2 nights here. We arrived Monday afternoon about an hour before check in, only had to wait about 20 minutes and our room was ready for us. The gentleman on reception was pleasant and polite. First impressions of the hotel was much better than expected, very clean, lovely smelling and lovely decor. We were showed to our room and again very pleased, lovely big room, very spacious, extremely clean, nothing out of place. Facilities were absolutely fine - the shower was very good! We both had a pretty decent night sleep only thing was the room was very warm, there is a fan in the wardrobe which we used but still was quite warm. We had breakfast included so went for that in the mornings, no complaints really. We also used the swimming pool which is a nice little touch, it's not huge but enough for a little early morning workout. I would stay here again although I think we would wait for some deals to come as we paid less to stay in London at Christmas time in a 5* hotel. This is not a criticism though, just love value for money!
Booked a night stay with friends whilst at the York races. The hotel is within walking distance of the race course. I can't recommend this hotel enough. Hotel booked a taxi for us prior to our arrival to take us to the course - 4 girls plus heels!! Rooms are great, fab size and clean. We all loved the 'goody tray' by the reception. Full of things you may have forgotten eg hairspray, cotton wool, cotton buds etc just put a donation in the box. Never seen this before - thank you!! Mandy who greeted us was so lovely and nothing was too much trouble. We ate in restaurant in the evening and couldn't believe how reasonable it was, food was amazing. We didn't try the pool but it looked great. We hope to return. Big big thank you to Mandy and the team for a lovely stay. From linda (mr h in disguise! - Mandy taxi joke) and friends xx
We booked this hotel as it was reasonably priced and had a swimming pool to keep the kids entertained. The pool was very clean and a decent size and the kids loved it. The room was clean with comfy beds. Best of all the staff, especially the manager Chris, were very friendly and welcoming. Young kids can be a bit noisy and disruptive at times especially in restaurants (food was very nice incidentally) but we were never made to feel that this was a problem.
l was not aware of the previous comments made about this hotel so I am able to give an unbiased opinion and would now concurr with several of the negative comments made. The rooms are more than a tad bit old fashioned and have obviously been neglected for many years which is a surprising act of negligence by the owner as the building does radiate an old world charm and the warm and welcoming staff do well to add to this. The hotel is situate next to a very busy road and even with double glazing the traffic noise is more than apparent so it is advisable to select a room at the rear of the building. The swimming pool is pleasant and clean as are the public areas including the basement restaurant where I can agree completely with the comments that the breakfasts are extremely good and credit must be given to the chef who ensures the superbly presented food is served up piping hot. I did not have dinner there but I suspect that the meals were of a high standard. All in all, a lick of paint and updating of the rooms with attention to the soft furnishings in particular would go a long way to uplift this hotel to a standard as shown in comparable establishments in York.
We had an enjoyable stay at the Kilima Hotel in York. Hotels always seem to be expensive in York, but we found this was reasonably priced for a decent place, and the staff were generally very friendly and very helpful.
Put bags in the room and then went back to work, Mouldy smell so left window open and was going to request a change on my return. The smell had vanished but the room was dated with bit of wall paper leaving the walls in places. The bar is in the celler along with the restaurant( so no windows or natural light ) took a pint up to the lounge area which was relaxing. There is a swimming pool ( did not use ) and free wifi.Ample free parking to the rear
My boyfriend booked this hotel as a surprise for us to have a night away and it had such a lovely romantic feel to the place. The room was beautiful and had a gorgeous four poster bed, a dressing table and a decently sized bathroom. I didn't notice any intrusive noise even though we facing the main road. The bed was comfy and we both slept well. The breakfast menu consisted of the usual items, I had Full English, my boyfriend had Eggs Benedict and both were tasty and very hot which is always good! Check out was easy and they provided a service where we could leave our bags in their safe room while we enjoyed our last day in York (we'd caught the train and didn't want to lug our bags around). The staff were lovely as well and very chatty and helpful with taxis and things to do! Will definitely stay again. FG
Friendly staff, lovely breakfast but rooms a let down. Mold on ceiling in bathroom, shower barely trickled out. Floor boards creaked loudly in bedroom and every time I turned over in bed the creaking woke me up. Shame! Bathroom in need of some money spending on it and modernising.
This is my second stay at a Best Western and I quite enjoyed it. Ok, on first arriving we didn't feel the building looked too inviting but the man on reception was very friendly and helpful and I liked the decor. I think our room was number 3(?), it was on the first floor and immediately to the left. The room was clean and I felt the facilities were of a good standard, trouser press/iron etc etc. The bed was comfortable enough and all in all we had a good night. The hotel is very well placed for walking in to the City. I do have two little niggles. One, I would definitely try to stay in a room at the back of the building, as the street noise was understandably quite loud and two, the floor boards were very creaky. My summing up is this is a fairly good place to stay and we will visit again when in the area. Oh and my wife liked the swimming pool too.
This hotel is superbly located within easy walking access to Micklegate or bus access for less mobile to York City & Race course. Provides a warm welcome and professional but helpful staff in every area. Nothing is too much trouble! Food and Drink 1st Class and very good value. Rooms well kept for older property with well stocked bathrooms. Has swimming pool on site. Large Car park with plenty of spaces to rear which is surrounded by trees.Thoroughly enjoyed visit and will return and recommend. Please note there are flights of stairs & NO lift available but staff will carry and fetch plus we believe there are a couple of rooms on the ground floor.
Very good small hotel within walking distance of York historic centre. Our bedroom and breakfasts were also very good value. An attraction is the on-site car park at the rear of the hotel, not always available for hotels within walking distance of the city centre. Our room at the rear of the hotel was well appointed, good bathroom and quiet.
Not a modern building, but it had some character. The hotel is a little way from the city centre but it is a short easy walk to get there. Even though the room I stayed in was rather small, it included all the facilities one would find in a higher rated hotel. The dinner menu was not that extensive but the food was flavoursome and most enjoyable. All the staff were very friendly and attentive.
We stayed two nights at the Kilima hotel. This was our first visit and will not be the last. The staff was very friendly throughout. We opted for bed and breakfast and wasn't disappointed. The hotel is not very large but certainly comfortable. The centre of York is an easy walk but if necessary buses pass the hotel. If you visit enjoy the use of swimming pool and sauna.
My colleagues and i have stayed at the Kilima hotel four different times for 12 nights since december whilst working in York , every stay has been superb , service is really top notch , very very pleasant staff , alway there to help if needed. Rooms are very comfortable , good showers. Food is varied and very good quality Nice little bar , shame theres no Guiness ! We will always stay there if working in York again. Shame our project has come to an end ! Big thankyou to Chris and his staff. Especially the lovely Beth who looked after us very well when we stayed there. Will be recommending the hotel to friends and colleagues. Not too far from the racecourse for some friends of mine ! Thanks again to all the staff at the Kilima
lovely staff, comfy bed, brilliant breakfast would certainly use again.10minutes walk from city centrewe went to a concert at the barbican.Full english breakfast was areal choice. nice day in york after.
Had two nights away in York, hotel was comfortable although could do with updating, especially the bed and mattress and sofa bed. The flat screen TVs was tiny. The breakfast was ample and tasty. Good selection of food and menu options. Our room overlooked the carpark so not much to look at except cars!! Our room had the four poster bed which was uncomfortable .
My wife and I visited this hotel last weekend . We were very pleasantly surprised with the overall hospitality.Staff were very friendly and also very accommodating. We had a very enjoyable stay accompanied with a swimming pool and a steam room which made our stay so memorable. Personally speaking we have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anybody who is visiting York.
This is a quaint, historic building with some lovely extras that you would not have expected. It has a pool, a steam room and a small gym; it is only a 15-minute walk to the centre of the city; it has free parking and wi-fi throughout. We stayed in a four-poster room, which was a lovely size, we also had a small table and two chairs and plenty of space to move around the room. The only downside was the fact that the floorboards were quite creaky - but it is an old building! There was a comfortable lounge area for guests to relax in and the restaurant, in the basement, was very good. We had dinner there twice and the food was very good but the breakfasts were exceptional with a great selection including some things out of the ordinary fare such as, a full veggie breakfast, eggs Benedict, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, cheese or beans on toast as well as continental items. The staff were lovely, all very friendly and helpful, happy to chat to you when you returned each day and offer advice. They certainly made us feel very welcome and we would happily return in the future.
First of all, the photos on the Best Western Website don't do this place any justice. It is full of character, very clean but looking tired in places. The staff were pleasant and the table with essentials at reception came very handy as I had forgot to pack my toothbrush! I phoned the hotel directly to book as the website said sold out however other travel websites were still advertising so I phoned direct and paid the single room price for a double - very good. On site parking was great as some hotels in York do not have this facility. The pool and sauna was clean, another added bonus compared to other hotels in York. The room had plenty of facilities all of which worked perfectly. The décor was cosy however the bathroom ceiling was full of mould and the areas around the window were damp too. It was very clean, the bed was comfy and it was great to have plenty of storage and a table and chairs. Breakfast was good. The Full English came fresh and they were happy to cook me fried egg as well as scrambled eggs to go with it. Check out at 11:30am was fantastic - this gave me time to recover from the night before! Check out was easy and the lady on reception was talkative.
My wife and I stayed here with our two children in mid-April, and we had a great time. It's a very well run hotel with a friendly and helpful staff. We were over from the States, and wanted to find a suitable destination for a two-night trip to get away from London. We weren't disappointed. It's a lovely, manageable city and very accessible from the hotel, either by bus/coach (which stops near the front door) or on foot. You can walk from the train station to the hotel. One of our favorite outings was a walk along the ancient wall that rings the city (and built by the Romans) on our way to the York Castle Museum. The National Railway Museum is superb too. Our kids, who are 7 and 8, loved the indoor pool. We had two nice breakfasts as well. The hotel is very reasonably priced. We recommend it highly!
The hotel was very comfortable and clean. Breakfasts and evening meal were very good. Staff went out of their way to give us walking instructions to a National Trust property and details of which buses to take to town.
My husband and I had a 3 day spring break in York and stayed at the Kilima Hotel for 2 nights. We were booked into a lovely double room with spotlessly clean en-suite and had delicious breakfasts cooked to order on both mornings. We also enjoyed two tasty, well presented meals in the hotel's restaurant on both evenings. The hotel has a swimming pool which was pleasant to use after a long day sight-seeing in York! Another big plus with this hotel is that it has it's own car park - leave the car and walk 15 minutes or so into the city centre - a very convenient location. All the staff we encountered at the Kilima were polite, friendly and helpful and I will certainly stay here again when we return to York in the future. Highly recommended.
Lovely hotel, room 24 just right for our needs, bathroom has a window which we like. Very handy, just a short walk to the centre of York and the railway station. Nice to have small pool and sauna which we occasionally used. Although only three stars do not be fooled by this, food is five star standard.
Nice hotel, 15 mins walk to centre. The hotel has 2 strong selling points: firstly there is a parking space for every room, and secondly there is a swimming pool. The pool is lovely and there is also a small steam room. My room was fine but I have to say it was warm constantly- the window had been open all day and the temperature never altered all night, slept without covers on and this was April. Never once had any heating on. The bathroom was very warm all the time. Not sure I would cope in the summer. The bar area was nice, the restaurant looked good (I never tried it). The reception staff were great, however the only thing that stopped me giving this review 5 stars was the fact that I was woken at 07:45 by people talking outside my room on the landing. When I looked I found they were cleaning staff. After getting ready I opened my door at 9am and found 3 cleaning staff still sitting on the landing and chatting (obviously waiting to clean the rooms). Overall an enjoyable stay.
Had a brilliant time in York. Hotel let us leave bags before check in with our train from Newcastle being so early. Had couple of hours shopping before walking back to hotel which took only 10 mins max. Staff at hotel were friendly and personal, making the stay that extra bit special!
We were there for two nights and had one of the four poster bed rooms. We had a very enjoyable stay and would go to the Kilima again, if we go back to York. The good points, and there are many, are these: the staff are very friendly and helpful - special thanks to Chris and Becky who were both easy to talk to and happy to help; our room was a good size, very clean and contained all the amenities – iron, kettle, hair dryer etc; great food - we had two breakfasts and the food was excellent. There were plenty of options on the menu and more when placing your order with the waiter / waitress. Options like a choice of ham or salmon in the Eggs Benedict or the choice of scrambled, fried or pouched eggs on the Full English breakfast were a nice touch. Also, that all the cooked items, were prepared immediately for you in the kitchen rather than sitting, cooling in a buffet style breakfast array was great. The only food set out on the buffet was cereals, fruit, fruit juices, toast and coffee, the latter of these we found delicious. The hotel has a small but enjoyable 10 meter long swimming pool and adjoining men's & women's changing rooms (these aren't large enough to hold any cubicles for privacy - they're just one room with a set of lockers and an enclosed toilet). There is also s Turkish stream room at the side of the pool to sweat out and relax before taking a dip in the cooler water. The downstairs bar is nicely set out and we enjoyed a glass or two before bed on our final night. The hotel is situated around the back of the York Rail station. Come out of the station, turn right, walk about 400 meters and then the next two rights to bring you onto Holgate Road and about another 400 meters back along there – it took us about 12 – 15 minutes walk until we found a shortcut through a small side street, over a foot bridge and through the station's car park – about 10 12 minutes. It's about 20 minutes amble to York city centre. The only minor issue we had with the Kilima was the creaking four poster bed and floor of the room we were in. The bed almost creaked when you looked at it. Sitting or moving the smallest amount caused very audible squeaks, creaks and groans to be heard around the room. Stepping in most places on the floor gave off deeper groans and rumblings. We thought this may have given us some trouble sleeping but the bed was comfortable and we slept deeply. In summary, a
Stayed for two nights for my partner 40 birthaday. Receptioniast really nice on arrival room was very clean and tidy. Bed was comfortable great nite sleep. Breakfast beautiful especially the sausages mmm. Steam room and pool amazing. All staff very friendly and welcoming. Great stay defo come back thanks for a great two days.
First the good points:The hotel is in a good location, a 15minute flat walk into York and about a 10 minute walk to the national railway museum. There are covered bus stops nearby with regular services into York and a taxi from the centre of town cost £5.It has a large, well light car park at the back of the hotel that is accessed by a steep slope. The decor inside i would describe as victorian country house, with the bar and breakfast area in the cellar being more modern. Please note there is no lift in the hotel, so would not be suitable for anyone with mobility problems. The hotel is kept really clean and the staff were really friendly. The bed was really comfortable. The breakfast was good, you could help yourself to cereal and yoghurt, toast, crumpets or hot cross buns! A waitress takes your order for tea or coffee and for hot food, of which there is a good selection from full English, bacon gaps, eggs Benedict etc .There were no croissants or Danish pastries and there was a very noisy machine that you could help yourself to various coffee/chocolate drinks (would not recommend sitting near this machine as it was very noisy). Sadly there were several bad points with the hotel: We stayed in room 5 and this is at the side of the hotel facing opposite a residential block and their bins! The bathroom faces the door to the room, so make sure you close the bathroom door when using the facilities. The panel to the bath was badly broken leaving sharp edges exposed and was coming away at the top, the extractor fan was covered in dust and was really noisy, so would not suggest using the bathroom light when anyone else is sleeping in the room, as it automatically turns the extractor on! The radiator in the bathroom did not work or in the bedroom, but we found the bedroom warm enough without it. The decor in the bedroom was old fashioned and needs updating, the curtain swags were really dusty and were coming apart at the top. The bedside cabinets have glass tops, that move around with the slightest touch. There are no sockets near the bed and there was no lamp by the seating area, so made reading in that area difficult at night. When you switch one bedside lamp on, the other one on the other side comes on also, so only switch your light on if your partner doesn't mind having their light on also! Also would not recommend ordering papers, as they did not arrive till after 8.30 am. The swimming pool looks over the car park, but you could not really see this when you are in the pool. There is only one shower in the changing room, so if you want to shower before entering the pool or steam room and someone else is showering, you will have to wait. Also there is no shelf by the hair dryers, so made it difficult to dry your hair and brush it at the same time. Would not recommend using the steam room as it has a plastic seating area (you can not lie down in it) and most of the seats on the right hand side are unusable as this is where the steam comes out under the seats (even though I was not sitting on the seat where the steam comes out, I still got hurt by the steam). Lastly at breakfast they had a radio station playing really loud and the staff thought it appropriate to sing along to the songs playing. Spoke to the manager about all of this and was made to feel that I was in the wrong, I wasn't even given a refund for the late newspapers, this is not what I would expect from a brand like Best Western and will stay in some of the award wining B and B's nearby if I visit York again.
First time stay at the Kilima Hotel, would definitely recommend! Brilliant staff throughout, check in and out process so relaxing, quaint bar and lounge area, food is first class, rooms comfortable and clean. Only a short walk to York centre and perfect location with the added bonus of a CCTV covered car park Thanks for great stay !!
Very friendly clean hotel. We stayed in a room with a separate room with sofa beds for the kids which was perfect. Swimming pool was great fun and the full english fantastic. Would come again when visiting York. Very keenly priced as well definitely book direct.
Reception staff were wonderful. Found us a better room for our needs - on the ground floor which saved me from the stairs. The room is big and comfortable. Facilities are excellent, for example the leisure suite is very good.
We recently went for a couple of nights for our 25th anniversary,The hotel is clean and comfortable, with everything you could need,The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and very helpful, giving directions, places to go things to see etc.We only stayed b&b and the breakfast were outstanding. We stayed in the luxury 4 poster room which had all the mod cons you would need for your stay. The swimming pool was a haven after a busy day exploring York followed by a few drinks in the quaint little bar.The hotel is just on the outskirts of York a nice walk if your able, but if not buses stopped just outside the hotel.
This hotel is about a 1/2 mile walk in to York city centre so great location. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was lovely, as was the pool and steam room ?? Car park is protected by CCTV just encase you worry about that kind of thing. My only criticism is the bathroom, it smelt a little musty, the wood was rotting around the toilet area and the decor in the bedroom was a little dated but having said all that, I would definitely book again due to the service you recieve and hotels location. Thanks for a great weekend ??????????
A very late booking. Large carpark Check in and check out was faultless and efficient. Best Western hotel comprises an old hotel with a more recent extension. I was in the older section and a room with a super king-size bed. Comfortable and well stocked with tea makings. I had a very well-priced dinner bed and breakfast deal. The restaurant was in the basement and was neat. I has a tasty pasta dish. There is also a small bar with VERY reasonably priced drinks. I was too late to use the pool etc but other guests said it was good. Great breakfast. The hotel let me leave my car in their carpark while I attended to business in the town centre (10 mins walk) This hotel had a 'family run' feel to it and I would stay again.
We stayed two nights over a weekend. Hotel was easy to find, lots of free parking space. Room was quite large, bed comfotable. A hotel with character, not bland corporate, came with creaky floorboards. We ate out so cannot review food - No reason for that other than we wanted to be in the city centre. About a ten min walk into the centre was easy enough. Swimming pool big enough for a swim, small steam room. We would visit again if in the area.
My first impressions of the hotel are very favourable. The room is pleasant, the staff are immensely helpful and friendly. There is a large car park and free WiFi. So far so good. The hotel is situated about 10 minutes walk from the city centre where there are numerous places to eat out if one does it wish to use the in house restaurant.
A charming hotel would appeal to many but slightly confusing, my room had a 4 poster bed which was nice, the floorboards creaked loudly and the bathroom was very 1970s however the bar and restaurant were light and modern with village decor, maybe the hotel is being refurbished? The staff were friendly and very much on the ball, the food dinner and breakfast were very nice (not buffet for breakfast) although dinner is a little bit expensive for a Best Western £23 for steak and chips. The hotel is a 15 minute walk from York Train Station but plenty of taxis are available. I would return for business as is suitably priced but not pleasure as I would expect more.
I stayed at the Killimor for two night. I had an all round excellent stay. The staff were polite and helpful. The hotel was well presented. I had a four poster room which had a separate sitting room. The only niggle was the tv in the sitting room had a very very small tv for the size of the room.
Room a little small and old fashioned but very clean and adequate. TV was a little temprimental, (think the remote needed new batteries). Whole place was very professionally managed with lovely relaxing lounge areas & sports facilities.
This is a very old fashioned hotel so if you like modern, clean designs you might not like this one. For us it was a nice experience as it was something different to what we usually go for, the hotel is located in an old Victorian building and the whole interior - rooms, lobby, restaurant are very traditional. We booked a room with a four poster bed which was really nice and we made good use of the hotel leisure facilities (these are obviously modern!) The pool was really nice, clean and the water was pleasantly warm. The breakfast was delicious and the staff was very nice and cheerful. The location was quite good, not too far to the city walls and central area with restaurants and bars. Overall it was a really nice stay and I would recommend it for a romantic getaway.
Very enjoyable stay. Wecaught a bus to thecity each morning and eventually made our way back on foot. The food, the evening dinners in particular, was hard to fault. We madeuse of swimming pool which we had to ourselves both times we used it.
Extremely friendly and helpful staff, only 10 minutes walk to the city centre. Lovely and clean room. Will definitely consider staying here again and would recommend this to anyone else travelling to York. We didn't eat whilst there but we did have a few drinks in the bar area. Lovely and cosy.
nice hotel only a short walk to city centre, helpfull staff, clean and tidy rooms and a good car park. swimming pool and sauna areas spotlessly clean. Restaurant serves good quality food although is slightly expensive
Fantastic hotel. Friendly helpful staff. The rooms were not the most recent refurbishment but we're clean and sufficient. The family room we had for 2 adults and three children was great. The pool was perfect, exactly like the picture, the kids loved it. We will definitely be returning.
Had booked this hotel prior to the flooding that hit York. We therefore experienced a little difficulty getting into the city due to diversions. Once into York I found the Kilima with ease. Upon arrival we were greeted warmly greeted by Chris the manager (what a great ambassador for the hotel) and taken to the room. Although a little drab, it was a large room that was clean and the bed comfortable. We did not have time to sample the amenities of the hotel, but I can say breakfast was tasty and of good value. I cannot praise the hotel staff enough as every member appeared to be helpful and friendly. Would I stay here again - YES!!! This hotel provides a good standard at a reasonable cost. Well done to Chris and his team!!!!
The hotel was only 15 minutes walk from the Center of York and offered great service, tasty food and a clean and nice swimming pool. We wish we had come the night before and will be back soon. Internet in the room was good too.
2 night stay with a 2 year old. Charming helpful staff.2 year old appreciated free squash in lobby. Comfortable room and nice indoor pool. Close enough to city to walk easily depending on Yorkshire weather
our recent stay at the kilma was great Chris and his staff are really friendly and helpful the rooms are a good size and kept really clean and tidy the breakfasts very good always well presented and hot its a great place to stay
This is a great hotel to stay at when visiting York. Very competitively priced - you can get a better deal by contacting the hotel directly as they will always beat the best quote onlne. 15 minute walk to centre of town but as it was raining when we visited the friendly reception staff provided us with bus details. A bus stop opposite the hotel takes you right into the centre so couldn't have been easier. Hotel and room perfectly comfortable and breakfast was superb. Customer service at this hotel is excellent, very natural and not in your face either. Will definitely stay again on my next trip to York!
A warm welcome awaits at this fabulous hotel. Chris the manager? What a lovely genuine bloke! Made us feel really welcome. The kids thought he was great. Lovely and clean room, warm and cosy with everything you could possibly need. And the pool facilities were a hit with the children! They loved it. Happy children makes for a good stay anywhere. We ate in the restaurant, everybody enjoyed their food, but my only criticism was the carbonara pasta, it tasted like pasta in sauce with a few chunks of ham thrown in, disappointing. But all in all very nice. Breakfast was superb. Everything you could want and more. Fantastic staff on hand too. 6:30 am? Well I'm guessing this is when staff are arriving for work, lots of banging and door slamming. Woke us all up. Glass tops on bedside tables? Sharp edges and little children not a good combination. Maybe remove the glass or have coasters. We will be returning some day soon.
The hotel is looking a little tired and in need of an update. TV in the room had a weak signal, the wifi wasnt great. The spa area changing rooms only had one seat in it and the steam wasnt a great experience. The staff were first rate !
Last night tonight into a 3 night stay. The hotel is conveniently located in York with the centre and shops etc only a short 5-10 minute walk away. The hotel itself is clean, tidy and comfortable and you get more 'extras' than you would at other generic hotels e.g trouser press, iron along with shampoos, soaps and the usual tea and coffee! Bed really comfortable. Only negative was the shower was useless and is not fit for purpose but the room had a bath so didn't really matter! I would stay again because I couldn't really fault it. Thanks (room 21)
Arrived early, met by Chris. As room ready could have straight away. Perfect service having bag taken to room, made to feel welcome. Room just what I wanted.Good amenities. Used gym/pool and steam room. Gym equipment good and all working. Pool just the right temperature and steam room lovely. Hotel very friendly, clean and comfortable. About a 15min walk into York which was great as dont like to be too lazy. Breakfast was great quality and lots of choice. More importantly for me, Im a 40 year old woman and this is the first time Ive stayed alone in a hotel. I felt safe and welcome like nothing was too much trouble. Very good value for money, would definitely stay again. Customer service is very important to me when writing a review - Well done Chris and staff for making it so lovely x
arrived at hotel half hour before check in not a problem...hotel very helpful cheerful and accommodating hotel room very good four poster bed room clean tidy and warm shower clean every thing about room good///// never had time to use pool /// free car parking very good breakfast room clean smart waited a small time to be attended to by two young lads but after that very helpful and polite all in all a very enjoyable stay thanks to manager free ice bucket for my partners champagyne nice touch ............ will be staying again thank you
Friendly welcome. Very helpful staff, lovely room with four poster bed and adjoining room for our daughter. Breakfast cooked fresh to order was delicious both mornings of our stay. Great location and ample car parking spaces. Would highly recommend and definitely stay again on next trip to York.
Staff very friendly. The swimming pool is very good if you like swimming, the hotel is clean although the rooms are outdated. Ample car park and 15 minutes away from the city centre by foot. Wi-fi was not working properly in our room when we visited, but apparently they will be fixing.
Really nice friendly hotel. Great location for getting to town centre. Though the room decor was a little dated it was clean and very comfortable. Room at front if hotel but no noise disturbance so good sleep. Breakfast facilities very good and food excellent would happily stay here today.
Had a great nights stay can't describe how friendly and helpful the staff at this hotel were the hotel is a short walk into the centre is very clean and we'll maintained with good facilities looks wise is like any other hotel at this budget, by far the best thing about the place is the staff, me and my wife visited with our newborn and the 2 guys who work the front desk couldn't be more helpful and friendly!! After returning home 2 days later I realised I had left my expensive wedding ring in the room, fearing the worst we called the hotel and it was there safe and sound, not having our contact details meant they couldn't return it till we contacted them, they have arranged for recorded delivery phew!! Again the guys on the front desk whose names I can't remember day shift and night, excellent customer service the first person you see at a hotel can set the tone of your stay and you guys along with the rest of your staff were excellent keep up the good work!!
Standard wasn't as expected, had a shabby feel about the room and it was very hot. We asked for a quiet room and was assured they would do this, even on arrival, they confirmed this. Unfortunately we arrived at night so could see nothing through the window. We were in desperate need for a rest, but rudely awoken the next morning quite early with noise, including beeping from a lorry, on checking through the window, found we were overlooking a building site, new flats being erected just over the wall next to us. Although booked for 2 nights, we decided to check out. We had paid up front, but the man on reception was surprised when we asked for a refund for the 2nd night. Didn't really like his attitude as it wasn't very professional. The gentleman on Reception the night we arrived was very well mannered though. The beds were very hard and I did not get a good night's sleep, There were new beds we were told and could not offer us a topper and I would say, if you need an orthopaedic mattress, the beds would be perfect.
Mould in the shower, creaky floorboards, thin walls so you can hear next door, cleaning staff chatting outside the door at an early hour, breafast was awful and took ages to prepare. I would not recommend this hotel
We stayed here for a 2 night Christmas shopping trip. Although part of a chain, the hotel has a very individual style with a homely feel. There is a large reasonably secure car park a bonus for a hotel so close to York city centre. The room we had was large and comfortably furnished. The bar and restaurant are attractive and we enjoyed the food and service. It is a ten/fifteen minute walk to the city walls but there are no hills so it is quite easy. After spending most of the day shopping and sightseeing we were very glad of the pool and steam room to ease aching muscles. We would definitely return to this hotel having thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
The room was nice and cosy if a little to warm but not complaining. The breakfast both mornings was fabulous. Cooked fresh to order, Eggs Benedict recommend. Parking was very good. Used the indoor pool a few times and the water felt fresh and lovely. York centre is a 20 min stroll. We will defiantly return to the Kilima.
Whilst in York for 10 weeks on business, I stayed in 6 different hotels and this one was by far my favourite. The rooms are clean, bright and of a good size...infact the whole hotel is decorated in a very traditional, family style. Oh..and the Wi-Fi is excellent too. But the two outstanding things for me are the food and the staff. Firstly the food is simply gorgeous and I can't recommend it highly enough. But the staff make this hotel for me. Nothing is too much trouble for them. One of the people I was on my course with had a birthday and the kitchen cooked us a Thai meal as a special treat. Best Thai food I've ever tasted. I will definitely be staying here for all future York visits.
Just back from a great weekend in york stayed at best western kilima hotel what a great find ,hotel very comfortable room was excellent and the bed very comfortable food was excellent very nice swimming pool. Left the best to last chris and his staff were excellent nothing was any trouble .looking forward to making this a yearly trip thank you and your team chris for making it a brilliant stay.
Stayed at the Kilima Hotel for 10 days on business in Setember 2015. All the staff were really helpful, our room was light and airy and the beds some of the most comfortable we had slept in. The food was excellent. Especially the breakfasts. Plenty of parking. Loved the indoor swimming pool, used it several times during our stay. There is also a reasonably well equipped gym, although I did not personally use it. We will be returning to the Kilima for another 10 days in December and then again in the New Year. One thing that really did impress us was that when we reported a minor maintenance item that needed attention we quite expected the fault not to be corrected/repaired during our visit (which had been our experience in another York hotel earlier in the year). We were really impressed that the minor maintaince issue was repaired that same day. Great service and lovely people, thank you. Fully recommend the Kilima Hotel.
We stayed here in the summer as a family of 4. It was a great base for our City break. The facilities were perfect - family room, pool, small friendly bar, fabulous dining room... The staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. In fact, they couldn't do more for us. So, when we were looking for a place to celebrate mum's 70th, we suggested here. We rang Chris directly, booking through the hotel, which was a much better deal. We were a party of 10, which can be off-putting for some hotels, but they welcomed us with open arms. They made the 4 children feel especially welcome (4 girls 11,10,9,8). We spent 2 nights (like last time). Our rooms were cleaned each day and coffee facilities and toiletries were more than sufficiently stocked. The pool was a complete hit both times! This was a key factor in us deciding on the hotel for our visits. Breakfast is just amazing (our youngest girl couldn't wait to return to get stuck in again!) They were incredibly accommodating, ensuring that there was a table for 10 each morning. We'll will definitely go back again and again. . . that is, of course, if Chris can cope with us, especially after our 2 lock misdemeanours! A long story!
A real find! Excellent value for money, lovely, well kept, clean hotel. Helpful, friendly staff. Lovely bar area and we had a great meal in restaurant. I have previously stayed in 4 and 5 star hotels in York but this is the one I will return to.
Arrived very early (6 hours) to a friendly welcome and were told there was no problem with us leaving the car in the car park and returning later to book in - really pleased about this as it gave us an extra half day in York. Booked in mid-afternoon and liked the spacious bedroom at the quiet end of the hotel. Good for us as we are early to bed and early to rise. Breakfast was all one could ask for - ranging from cereal to cooked food. The cooked food was prepared to order and this meant it was really fresh. And , very pleasing for us, there was as much coffee or tea as one wanted. Hotel is quite well located and we ( both around 70) were able to walk everywhere if we wanted. However the bus stops close to the hotel meant we cheated from time-to-time! Enjoyable stay in a friendly environment. Thanks to all.
Myself and my partner stayed here for 2 nights at the start of November. We couldn't of been happier at the fab welcoming and service throughout our stay. Staff were all lovely and the breakfast was great. Swimming pool was lovely, and we were the only 2 in it each time we used it. Would highly recommend this hotel!! We loved our stay and will definately be returning.
We stayed here Halloween weekend, very good food and friendly staff. Very clean, good size room. A big plus with this hotel is the car park, which is a good size and free of charge. Chris the manager is very nice and makes a really nice lacquer coffee! Tea and coffee making facilities in the room and biscuits left for you everyday. Best hotel I have been to in York.
Booked for one night dinner bed and breakfast. Was excellent value with great service all staff friendly and helpful dinner was lovely and breakfast more than enough to set us up for a day walking round York hotel ideally situated and we were allowed to leave the car in the car park for the day such a bonus. Would highly recommended and definitely go back. Many thanks to Chris and all the staff
This is a lovely hotel. The staff are all very attentive and nothing is any trouble. Good selection of toiletries and selection of tea/coffee. The breakfast was lovely and you can pick exactly what you like. Had an evening meal as it was in the package all very tasty and good service. The hotel has free wifi and a swimming pool. There are lots of parking spaces and it took about 10 minutes to walk into city.
I stayed here last year for 3nights on a work course with two colleagues.had a great time.a lovely hotel.I had a room at the front.everything I needed.the meals were lovely.looked forward to them each day.didn't get to try the pool unfortunately. Nxt time.staff were fantastic.unfortunately didn't get to write this sooner as wanted to thank all staff for their hospitality.professionalism and kindness.looking forward to returning.karen.excellent for York races
We spent a few days in York and enjoyed a very comfotable stay in the Kilima. It appears to be a small hotel from the outside however, the reception area has comfortable reading areas and internet portal. Our bedroom was clean, tastefully decorated and spacious. I didn't see a lift so some bedrooms may not be available to some guests. We enjoyed drinks and meals in the bar / restaurant downstairs each evening after a sessions in the gym, sauna and pool! Staff were friendly and diligent. Will recommend this hotel to friends and wouldn'd hesitate to book in again should we plan another trip to York.
York is a beautiful busy city and this hotel is a lovely location, close enough for a 10 - 15 minute walk into York, though away from the hustle and bustle, making it a relaxing place to stay. The breakfast was delicious and piping hot. It's cooked to order and there's plenty of choice from a full English breakfast, to bacon barm, to eggs benedict etc (as well as continental buffet). The bar is traditional in style and a nice place for a relaxing drink. The building is lovely with a lot character. We stayed in an executive double room, which had 2 good size rooms and ensuite bathroom, with a bedroom and separate room/seating area, with TVs in both rooms (not sure if this is the same for all executive doubles as it doesn't give a description on the website). So you felt like you had a lot of room for a comfortable stay. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. Little things were nice such as being shown to your room on checking in and staff very helpful with directions etc. We would definitely recommend and would definitely stay again.
We stayed one night in October. Very welcoming and friendly. Efficient staff and a very comfortable room. Used the reataurant for breakfast and dinner, and on both occasions we were very satisfied. Location was good, only a short walk into the city, and no parking charges! I'd recommend this hotel to anyone.
The best facility at this hotel is its people and the welcome starts the moment you walk through the front door, continues with the service staff in the restaurant and the domestic staff when you meet them in the corridor. This is no production line hotel where your presence is an economic statistic, the bedrooms are all the same and you are lucky if any of the staff can communicate without a heavy accent. This is an old-fashioned kind of establishment where the people that stay there are guests not just a source of income. The leisure centre is surprisingly large and well fitted out considering the size of the building and the restaurant is a gem. The serving staff are mostly students but what a pleasant change to find young people who can engage with their customers to discuss what is on offer and make intelligent conversation about the wines. Definitely the best hotel that I have ever stayed in.
DOwn in York on another workie visit but due to other priorities I couldn't confirm trip until last minute and booked into the Kilma. Always fancied giving this one a try but thought that the location was different. Any how, arrived later than hoped as coming across country and had a wee bit of a hike to location. 10-15 minutes but hey I need the exercise. I decided to make use of the leisure facilities, small gym with basics - treadmill, bike, step machine, rower and very limited free weights - dumbells only but enough to do a turn. The pool and steam room were empty bar me and were great for slow swim and relaxing. All was clean enough and towels, etc on hand. On both nights, I couldn't be bothered going into central York for dinner but there are restaurants, etc close by on Blossom Street. However, I'm glad I eat in so to speak. I couldn't fault the quality of the grub so would recommend the hotel restaurant. Down stairs in the cellar, it's snug and cosy with a bar if you wished to indulge and the olde worlde theme of the hotel continued - frequent BW visitors will know the theme of quirky character hotels the chain has. All the staff were very, very friendly and I've booked back in here for my next York trip in a couple of weeks time. Great place to relax after a long day with terrific food and great staff, why wouldn't you. I didn't notice whether lifts were available as access to the restaurant would be restricted but otherwise, happy enough with the package. Thanks.
The friendly service from all the staff, the prompt way that any problems are dealt with- makes me wonder I even bother staying anywhere else. OK so the floors sre creaky-but that's just the character of an old building. Food is excellent and it is rereshing to have breakfast cooked to order rather than congealing on a biffet bar. why I whywhy I
We have just returned from a weekend in York and this hotel suited our needs perfectly. Having read the previous reviews I will make the following comments; a modern square box type hotel with identical rooms it is not, it is an old traditional building with character, bedroom possibly in need of refurbishment but it was clean, tidy and had everything you need. We had a superior room at the rear which was very quiet and the bed was comfortable. I used the pool which was nice for a quick swim and the fitness room was well equipped. The hotel has a free car park and is a 10 minute walk to the city walls which is important because the price of car parking in York is ridiculous. The difference between this hotel and the corporate chain was the staff, Chris and his team are excellent, everybody friendly and breakfast was the best bit. I would definitely stay here again.
I arrived to a friendly welcome. Quickly checked in and headed up to the room. The room was on the front of the hotel and was extremely hot so I opened the window to be hit with a wall of noise from the main road outside - luckily and unlike many hotels I was able to turn down the radiator; it was on full on arrival, the room eventually cooled down but the noise didn't and as I wasn't able to close the window due to the heat it was not the best nights sleep. The room itself was well equipped the furniture antique in style but well looked after. My only issue was that the room had a four poster bed with a top canopy close to the light which mean the room was perpetually dark making getting any work done difficult. The bathroom was a little run down but more than adequate. The pool and ground floor public spaces were great, clean and well looked after. The restaurant in is a basement so quite dark. I think I picked the wrong time to visit as on the night of my evening meal two students were manning the restaurant and bar and given the time of year were likely new. My real ale was both badly served (almost served with no sprinkler) and off smelling strongly of vinegar. It was replaced but really should never have been served as it was obviously bad. The food it self was good but the service was amateurish - students really should be supervised until properly experienced. I'd not stay here again traveling on business as my room was not really suitable for working but would happily stay again for leisure as I am sure that in a few weeks time the new staff will be up to the standards described by other reviewers.
I visited this hotel after dropping my son at university. The welcome on arrival was warm, genuine and professional. My room was very big, clean and decorated well. If I needed to improve anything, I would upgrade the floor in the bathroom. There is nothing wrong with it but it is not high end. The breakfast was delicious. Full English that was both fresh and accommodated my gluten allergy. The staff were quick and attentive. One member of staff kept singing, which I could do without. But maybe I am not a morning person.
I have just returned from a three night stay with the wife and was blown over with the customer service provided by Chris and his team. As soon as we arrived he made us feel welcome by showing us to our room and explaining where everything was and throughout our stay nothing was to much trouble. All the public areas including the pool and steam room were well kept and very clean and yes they were towels in the changing rooms. The breakfast room and bar area were a delight downstairs, which was backed with the quality of the breakfast. The choice was ample for anyone and if you wanted something different you had only to ask. Our room was on the side of the hotel, which was comfortable and quiet and an extra large bed. We had a small problem with the bathroom but this was fixed quickly and without fuss but could do with a little update. There is very good car parking to the rear of the hotel, which is a must in the centre of York. Taxis were good and not to expensive if you are not good on your pins. All in all we had a great time and it just went to fast but would definitely recommend this hotel and would love to return even though I am a Lancashire lad.
