"Beautiful hotel"

5
Be_cool_bec, Bolton, United Kingdom 23/05/2022

We had a “Sunday night sleepover” and it couldn't have been better. The hotel and grounds are lovely, the room was beautiful and well maintained. The food was delicious, both dinner and breakfast. They managed to accommodate us having an earlier dinner reservation as we had been originally allocated a late time. The only difficulty was getting a snack in the bar, which we were advised wasn't possible. Otherwise a perfect stay.

"Picturesque Hotel but don't expect to eat there!"

User 18/05/2022

Checked in on the 12 May for a five night stay and immediately attempted to make a reservation for dinner only to be told the restaurant was fully booked for all five nights! We finally managed to secure a booking for our last night which was a Monday. The restaurant (which never appeared full) was clearly booked by non-residents but surely some tables should be put aside for residents, especially in a country hotel. We were offered a booking in the Bar one of the nights on a limited menu, my wife wanted a sandwich but these could not be served after 6pm! The room was fine and the bed very comfortable but in need of some maintenance

"Not very user friendly"

juliatH105UW, Maidstone, United Kingdom 18/05/2022

Beautiful Grade 1 listed building with extensive and very pretty grounds. A number of elements very good but equally a number of elements, especially food, not up to expected 4 star standard. Lovely big room with an excellent bed let down by broken curtains and blinds. It could be so good but it needs money spending on it.

Fantastic location, great food and outstanding service. Really couldn't fault the stay. The grounds and buildings were gorgeous and the staff made the stay relaxing and welcoming, will definitely visit again

"4 STAR HOTEL WITH NO FOOD!"

User 16/05/2022

Checked in to this hotel on Saturday, 14 May 2022 and on arrival we mentioned that we would like a light meal in the BAR that evening and were told that both the restaurant and the BAR were fully booked. We also asked if we could book lunch in the BAR just for me the following day, but again, we were told that both the restaurant and the BAR were fully booked. The receptionist suggested that I arrange to have a meal at the golf club!! We then asked to speak with the duty manager but were told that she was busy dealing with the wedding reception that was taking place. Eventually, after much persistence we were told that a table would be available for myself on the Sunday for lunch at 1.00 p.m. in the BAR. However, we still had to leave the hotel and go out into Woodbridge on the Saturday evening for a meal. We had deliberately booked this hotel as my husband had an early start the following morning to prepare for a charity bike ride and he was taking the car to the meet up point for the ride, and consequently I was going to be spending my time at the hotel. On arriving for lunch at 1.00 p.m., I couldn't help but notice that there were only one or two tables occupied in the restaurant, bearing in mind lunch is served between 12-2.00 p.m. and it didn't appear to get busy until around 2.00 p.m. when people were arriving for afternoon tea. The BAR however was completely unoccupied and I was the only person dining. A short time later, a couple arrived and asked the barman if they would be able to have something to eat and there didn't appear to be any problem at all with this. So, after all this drama/fiasco, I would like to mention KIM in The Spa and GEORGE in the BAR who both went above and beyond their call of duty. All in all this is not the experience I had anticipated in a hotel of this nature at £197.50 for a night's stay and needless to say I won't be looking to stay here again!!

"Fantastic!"

Lynn W, Lincoln, United Kingdom 15/05/2022

We booked a last minute away break at a really good rate. What a lovely surprise to have a beautiful 4 poster room (no 5), in the historic main building and overlooking the courtyard and beautifully maintained gardens. The wisteria covering the walls was in full bloom. This is the perfect place to relax - so peaceful; we slept like logs. The staff team were all friendly and helpful; a special mention going to George, who was just brill. We didn't eat in the restaurant, ordering a bar meal instead. The food was great, and not charged out at the extortionate prices so often seen in country house hotels. In short - this place is fab!

"The Perfect Anniversary Weekend."

5
Lealouk, Selling, United Kingdom 02/05/2022

We stayed for two nights over Bank Holiday weekend, with our dog” Siah” , who is a bit of a high maintenance Husky. I booked it a couple of months ago for our Anniversary weekend, so wanted somewhere a bit special and I was slightly concerned over some of the latest reviews of Seckford Hall . I'm so glad we decided to see for ourselves. What a gorgeous place! The building is beautiful, as are the grounds. The staff are all wonderfully helpful and welcoming. Our room was spacious, clean and comfortable ( dog friendly garden room 33) . It seems very good value for money to me, so I don't see anything to complain about! We went into Woodbridge by foot on Saturday, which took about half an hour. Reception will recommend the best route to take. Just a really enjoyable , relaxing break, will definitely return.

Ana Batista, General Manager at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Dear Leolouk, The Team at Seckford Hall Hotel would like to thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit. We are happy to hear you had a lovely Anniversary weekend with Siah. We look forward on welcoming you back in the not so near future. Sincerely,

Dazzalex, Southend-on-Sea, United Kingdom 01/05/2022

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights as a base to visit Sutton Hoo (10 minutes away by car). Hotel retains many of the original features with modern upgrades as it's a spa (not visited) though youre Addvised the pool is under repair online. Friendly reception and food is fairly good ( 1 evening meal sampled which was quite good - salmon starter was lovely, steak fair but large! ) Breakfasts variable but perfectly adequate. Rooms comfy - ours downstairs were newly converted so everything very new. Nice bed. Shower: weak power but adequate. Gardens nice to walk round in sunny weather - likely to be a good wedding venue so check when booking! Overall quite enjoyable visit and fair value for money.

"Very disappointing"

User 30/04/2022

In need of a lot of TLC, Particularly Room no.3 Broken door handle to en-suite, stained carpet, telephone not working, broken toilet roll holder, extract fan on constantly during whole of stay, no 13amp plugs by the bed, no brandy glasses available The room was generally very tired and dated, the wardrobe had front to back hanging with awful rickety sliding doors and 3 steep steps to access

"A very different interpretation of '4 star luxury'"

3
traceyjanelee82, Faringdon, United Kingdom 23/04/2022

Tired hotel furnishings (stained carpets, mouldy bathroom grout, curtain fittings broken) and bed linen and pillows that were far from 'luxury'. and in general, poor customer service bar one exceptional member of staff - the welcome from the Receptionist on duty was appalling. We stayed two nights (two rooms). Both rooms had broken curtain/blind fittings. The blind was fixed quickly, along with a drawer handle that came off in my relatives hand. There were three weddings throughout our stay. Maybe the reason for the lack of customer service for non-wedding guests? Quality of food at dinner was mainly good. Continental breakfast just okay, porridge excellent.

"Seckford Hotel"

anncO7193RY, Norfolk, United Kingdom 19/04/2022

Seckford Hotel is a fabulous looking building on the outside and one in need of some TLC in parts on the inside as some areas could do with a freshen up. The staff are friendly and the gardens are lovely. We took the walk as suggested in the room information, the directions were excellent and easy to follow. It was a nice walk and yes about an hour to complete. Sadly though we did have some grumbles, we decided to have the “nibbles” instead of a starter as part of our evening meal. The olives were not great and the hummus was probably the worst I have ever tried. When the waitress came to remove our plates etc I mentioned this to her. Her response was that she would tell the chef, I hope she did as we heard nothing further about it. Both my husband and I ordered the sea bass, it was superb and would highly recommend that. Our room was quite nice, or so we thought! During the hussle and bustle of the evening we did not become aware until it was too late that the toilet overflow system was not working properly so it continually flowed noisily all night which impacted negatively on both mine and my husbands sleep. This morning as there as a nip in the air, my husband turned on the radiator which clearly needed to be bled as it was very noisy also and was about a third effective by the time we had paid up and left the room! Breakfast had a good selection of food, we opted for the full English, we weren't a big fan of the potatoes, but that is personal choice but the sausages!!!!! They ( to me) were cheap and saw dusty. Again probably the worst I have ever tasted. I did give all of the above feedback to the duty manager before we left, mostly because who ever is sleeping in room 9 tonight I hope they will have a better night sleep than we did, assuming the toilet is fixed. I did receive a very genuine apology and was told that if we had mentioned the toilet problem earlier then it could have been addressed, I am not entirely sure that the maintained person would have been available at 3 am but as I didn't request that I will never know and I am sure the guests around me were glad that I did not! I was also told that the sausages are sourced from the local butcher, I really do not believe any butcher would be proud to claim those as their own. The reason for our night away was to celebrate our wedding anniversary and we did. Did it feel special and worth the money, no, probably not. As we paid for bed and breakfast we got what we paid for, the fact that our sleep was disturbed for a lot of the night in the bed seems immaterial.

My mother and I had a truly amazing break at Seckford will be coming back as soon as we can! Hotel was lovely and clean. Food was delicious and all members of staff were amazing. Thank you so much for making our trip so special.

Staff, and Chef excellent. Building in need of attention physically as well as decoratively. Don't let the state of the building put you off as Staff and Cuisine excellent. We looked forward to each evenings meal.

"Gorgeous hotel great service"

Beverley S, Cambridge, United Kingdom 25/03/2022

Lovely hotel in stunning gardens. Excellent service and food throughout our stay. Very well placed for a suffolk family holiday. We had a superior garden room on the middle floor with gorgeous views across the gardens. The staff went out of their way to be helpful particularly the ladies in the restaurant, we chopped and changed where we wanted to sit and asked for extra sides and they were happy to accomodate us.

"Lovely hotel, lovely staff, but the those beds!!"

charlieb38, London 24/03/2022

I stayed for one night with my mum. The ground are beautiful, the staff all very friendly, and the breakfast was very good good. Our room was in the courtyard part so it's separate to the main building. The rooms are tastefully decorated, spotlessly clean and the towels soft and fluffy. Our room only had a tiny window so was a little dark, but my only real criticism was the bed. The mattress was so hard it was like sleeping on a wooden floor and my back and shoulders were in agony the next morning along with the pillows being so soft, it wasn't best nights sleep for either of us. That's why I couldn't give it five stars.

"Needs attention"

3
Vicky100, England 20/03/2022

The staff were helpful and seem to know things need improving. The room I was in was full of issues, general cleaning ( e.g windows, dust) maintenance ( holes on walls, cracks) and style. Breakfast was serviceable. Pool out of action. This place sadly needs a bit more love, money and attention spent on it. The building itself is incredible and has the potential to be the most amazing hotel.

"Disappointing stay"

3
User 20/03/2022

I have just returned from a weekend away at this hotel. The exterior of the hotel and the gardens are lovely, unfortunately this is not matched by the exterior. The rooms are dated, and our room had poor quality toiletries, no shower cap, no body lotions, no tissues - in fact the bare minimum that could be supplied. I was interested to read that some clients of this hotel ate pancakes and fish at breakfast. Pancakes certainly not on offer when we were there, and no smoked haddock - the food ran out at breakfast, and not enough staff to replenish it, tables weren't cleared of our used plates so we were cramped for table space. This is not a cheap hotel, and I'm sorry to say does not offer value for money. Finally I would say, on a positive note, that we had dinner in the restaurant and it was very good. The staff tried hard in general but there wasn't enough of them to offer the level of service necessary to justify these prices.

Lovely great for my birthday. Food and accommodation excellent. Had 2 nights of dinner at Hotel with superb food . Close to Woodbridge with nice shops and cafes. Travelled to Southwold for day visit which was lovely.

philipt139, Chigwell, United Kingdom 16/03/2022

Lovely a hotel. Very old and full of charm. The rooms were clean and modern. All the staff friendly. The dinner was delicious. The dry aged beef melted in my mouth. Very competitive pricing. We had a fantastic stay. Thank you so much. Especially for making me some pepper corn sauce as a one off.

"Perfect birthday treat"

5
clairejR2468DG, Raveningham, United Kingdom 13/03/2022

For a birthday treat my husband booked an Afternoon Tea for myself, him and our 19 year old son. We were placed in the cosy, wood panelled sitting room with a roaring log fire warming the room. The staff were very attentive, prompt with their service and couldn't have been more helpful. They checked our dietary requirements in detail and left nothing to chance. The finger sandwiches were exquisite, the scones freshly baked accompanied with clotted cream and medallions of butter accompanied by opera cake slices and pistachio dreams. The squares of battenburg were scrumptious. As a vegetarian, I had a luscious halloumi bite and my husband and son pronounced their scotch eggs the best ever. This was truly a fabulous birthday experience and I would highly recommend.

"No customer service, rude reception and dirty room. Complaint met with no response, sums up their customer service"

1
grumpymarty, Tonbridge, United Kingdom 11/03/2022

Worst hotel experience. Checked out a day early. Room was dirty. Management non responsive. Reception treated us like he was doing us a favour by letting us stay. There must be better hotels in Suffolk. Stay elsewhere if you want to enjoy the delights of the Suffolk coast.

"Clean comfortable and quirky"

Euro1999, England 09/03/2022

Hotel with a lot of character with beautiful surroundings. Rooms were quirky. Room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was very good quality. Value for money in my view. Staff were helpful. Maybe shower could do with improvement as not very powerful

"Very comfortable, great if travelling with dogs. Avoid the rude gardener...."

4
User 25/02/2022

We were visiting family locally and booked the Seckford Hall as it's dog friendly and offering accommodation for travellers with dogs outside of the main building. Very efficient check in, good size and well equipped Courtyard room with direct access to the extensive grounds to walk the dogs. Good breakfast service, efficient and good food. Would have given five stars other than the grumpy and rude gardener clearing wood from the garden and the broken light dislodged bathroom ceiling which had clearly been like it for some time. Overall, very good and no hesitation in recommending or rebooking for our next trip.

"Superb hotel and quality staff"

5

Amazing attentative staff where nothing was too much trouble and the food was exemplary. Set in idilic surrounds this beautiful building deserves all the praise I can give. After a hectic weekend our overnight stay here was simply perfect.

"Lovely Hotel that needs some love."

We have been to Seckford Hall many times over the years, its a beautiful building, with some courtyard areas converted to suites. its a lovely spa hotel a little bit of luxury. But ...We didnt find the same experience this time. We had booked a suite for 4 nights for a special birthday. I was made aware that there where issues with the pool and it was closed but i had tried to book us spa treatments each day, sadly we could only get one on the 4th day, so we cut the break short by a day. In context, the Hotel was very quiet, so our level of service was a surprise. Hotel looks very down and dirty and needs maintenance, throughout. Our suite was tired and dirty, house keeping was of poor standard and nothing seemed to get replenished. It just got a bit irritating that we kept having to ask for tea or milk or clean glasses. Spa facilities seem to be open, but we didn't see them open and our treatment was cancelled just minutes beforehand but the hotel Manager did offer to book us elsewhere for the treatment . Food was fabulous but the menu was the same each night so we opted to eat elsewhere on the 3rd night. breakfast was nice albeit limited in choice Hotel staff where very attentive but only a few of them. New hotel Manager in place and I would have great hopes to return but I will leave it a while until their maintenance team have brought things back up to standard. It felt very different to our experiences before and our room wouldn't have passed inspection at a premier inn, but this was acknowledged .so Lets hope Ana the general Manager gets things back up to standard.

My wife and I stayed for 2 nights in standard room-Clean, well equipper with nice view As we arrived on Sunday decided, aginst our normal practice, to eat in the restaurant. Very pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food, tasty, cooked to perfection ,with good quantities worthy of a very good quality restaurant. We returned the next night for achange of menu, not normal in hotels, and again had a lovely meal. Seckford Hall has a nice feel and with such good food we would recommend it to anyone.

"Perfect"

Hotel, room, food and staff are amazing cannot fault the place. From the moment we got there to the moment we left everything was perfect. The dinner service and breakfast service was faultless, the food was delicious

"Excellent Service"

5
De_Rycc, Bath, United Kingdom 05/02/2022

Excellent service throughout. All the staffs were really friendly and approachable. Breakfast was particularly enjoyable. The bar was lovely, really cosy and the prices were reasonable. We played dominos to past the time, plenty of board games to keep you entertained. We had a standard room, which was clean and consists of a large kingsize bed. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would be glad to recommend this hotel. Credit to the staffs for providing an excellent service.

"Beautiful place, but wouldn't rush back"

User 30/01/2022

A little bit underwhelmed by our stay, unfortunately. The hotel is absolutely beautiful, grounds and communal areas are wonderful. Our room was unexpectedly small, although beautifully decorated. Bathroom only just enough room to turn around in, no bath, lovely toiletries. However the bedroom was really quite chilly, there's a plug in radiator on all the time, plus a (bit noisy) air con unit that rumbles away. If you feel the cold you'd struggle in this room. Window view was beautiful. The spa is separate from the hotel and I was disappointed that pool wasn't available to hotel guests. The website was challenging. The main hotel page made no reference to spa being closed when booking hotel, but on arrival reception said it was closed. The spa website booking facility wasn't working and receptionist didn't have a spa brochure, so we gave up. One of our main reasons for booking was the spa so this was quite disappointing. The staff were excellent, nothing was too much trouble, very attentive. Breakfast delicious, nice options and good quality. Small niggle but the music is a bit inappropriate throughout the hotel, too noisy and not fitting for the space. Breakfast was served with nightclub music playing, heard another guest ask for it to be turned down. The beautiful sitting room with roaring fire was a delight, but we did have to talk over the music which was surprisingly loud for a sitting area.

"Afternoon shame!!!"

1
User 28/01/2022

We we're looking forward to our afternoon tea, booked in advance. Upon arrival we were questioned whether we had booked and even after showing the email we were still questioned. We should have left here. We then stood in the empty lobby whilst preparation took place, then when seated the afternoon tea took over 30 minutes to arrive so much so we had finished one weak pot of tea. The lack of attentiveness continued amidst scones like bricks that shattered when sliced. Music blearing, The Script, not the ambiance one expects. The staff started re setting tables around us, shaking table cloths, whilst we were eating. A Henry hoover passed our table twice, making it an uncomfortable, rushed experience.

"A wonderful stay and a gem of a host"

User 24/01/2022

We have just returned home from our stay at Seckford Hall, where we were celebrating my nan's 70th birthday. The venue itself is even more beautiful than I remember, and we have already booked to return in March to celebrate another special birthday - hoping that the pool will have reopened by then. We dined in the 1530 restaurant for dinner and the following day for lunch, where we were looked after by both times Marc - who was one of the most attentive hosts we've ever come across. Nothing was too much of an ask, he knew the menu front to back and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed at all times, it was so nice to be served by someone so friendly and cheery. The hosts at breakfast were equally as lovely, but Marc stood out for us and made everything feel very special, so a huge thank you to him for making our celebration one to remember. We look forward to returning in March.

"What should have been a wonderful stay, turned into a massive disappointment."

Coastal66708279084, Banbury, United Kingdom 11/01/2022

Where do I begin in a long list of problems that my mother and I had to endure during our stay! Incorrect booking, wrong dates Upgraded to luxury Suite in fact Bridal Suite for my 90 year old mother and myself with a four poster…not ideal as I had specifically specified I needed twin beds. No heating or hot water in the room as oil hadn't been delivered to hotel. It was freezing outside, minus degrees. Booked dinner in the hotel and prior decided on drinks from the bar. Sherry, didn't have any Bloody Mary, we don't do cocktails, I explained it's Vodka and Tomato juice, no sorry Ginger Ale, no we don't have any Waited over an hour for dinner to arrive. Ordered roast pork and asked for apple sauce (it was on the menu), no sorry we don't have any but you can have horseradish or mint sauce. Later offered our original drinks as they had found out they did in fact have them after all. The whole thing was comical.

"Second stay here and a third planned"

5
alanb0nd, Suffolk, United Kingdom 07/01/2022

Stayed here one night with wife in Dec 2021. Planned to stay longer but had to curtail due to family issue. Stayed four nights in January 2022 which again was supposed to be 10 nights but health issue of wife forced curtailment. Plan to book 10 nights shortly. Hotel excellent with friendly helpful competent staff without exception. Breakfast great with cooked to order options plus normal cereal etc buffet options. Restaurant food surprisingly good quality. They have obviously got a talented chef. Only criticism is the WiFi in the courtyard rooms is not up to the task with weak signal when accessed via iPad and iPhone but surprisingly a Windows 10 laptop was useable. No problem in main building. Will certainly stay again as planned.

Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings, all staff were helpful and could not do enough to help make the stay comfortable. There were great breakfast options, the rooms were clean and comfortable. I would come back to visit when I have more time.

I have been using Seckford Hall off and on for 30 years but watched it go downhill as the years passed. The previous visit was an afternoon tea for our wedding party which was possibly one of the most dissapointing experiences ever. How could they forget the bubbly on our guests arrival ? On to 27th Dec 21, a family gathering most of whom were staying but dinner being our main meeting. A very restrictive menu and where did they find the waiting on staff ? Comments like " there you go " as a plate was put in front of you. We requested some vinegar whereby the filthiest bottle of Sarsons was placed on the table, but before everyone had chance to use it it was snatched away with the comment " just taking that " Our family staying were dissapointed no swimming pool as that was one reason for selecting SH. All in all its a wonderful building let down by its staff.

"Christmas 3 Day Break"

We stayed in Room 34 in the Courtyard at Seckford Hall. Room was very spacious and had all the facilities that you needed for your stay. Lovely fluffy towels, and robes were provided. The meals provided during the stay were cooked to perfection, and used good quality products. After the Christmas lunch time meal a buffet was served containing cheeses, cakes etc followed by a Quiz. The quiz was run by Marc and it was lovely to see lots of people joining in with it. What I thought was a lovely idea from Marc was to do a Children's quiz as there were two children present so they could also join in with the fun. I would like to pass my thanks to everyone at Seckford Hall and especially to the Chef who cooked exceptional meals for all. We have already booked for August and just hope this visit is as good. Thanks for a lovely Christmas break. My only negative comment is it would have been nice to have some kind of festive decorations in the room as it was Christmas.

From the minute we arrived at this lovely hotel we were looked after. The hotel staff are all welcoming and a nice xmas fire and mulled wine on arrival. The food is first class and service second to none The room was within the hotel and absolutely lovely. Staff were all helpful and one particular gentleman held a christmas quiz for the residents. We come here every year and love the grounds, the setting and the lovely Suffolk area

We booked a 3 night break from 24th till 27th Dec, and had a wonderful time. Our standard double (room 3) was much bigger than expected, comfortable and clean. Breakfasts were excellent with really good choice of dishes. All dinners were excellent and tasty with good quality ingredients. We particularly enjoyed the Xmas day evening supper which had a wonderful selection of cheeses, savouries and cakes. All staff were fantastic, polite, professional and so very helpful (Marc in particular!... and Lewis who served us in the restaurant, such a lovely helpful young man!). All in all we had a thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable stay...We will return...Thankyou Seckford Hall! X

Room 7 above bar. Was feature room we paid extra for. Two staff talking very loudly at 03.20 am had to get up and go down stairs after over an hour to ask them to be quiet. Receptionist was unconcerned at check out. Would not stay in that room again.

I have stayed in this hotel on several occasions over the last 20 years, mainly when it was in private ownership. I have also dined in the restaurant when not a resident. I cannot recommend the hotel enough to say how much we enjoyed every visit. It is always the place of choice when visiting Suffolk, where i am from originally.

"Not the best hotel experience "

Dawn S, Diss, United Kingdom 15/12/2021

First we were only told the pool was unavailable after we got the confirmation. This was for my 60th birthday and I particularly love to swim. It was too late to book elsewhere with a pool and another hotel did inform us before booking that their pool was also unavailable. We had a lovely evening meal but was informed that we couldn't be fitted in the restaurant on our 2nd night and our 2nd reason for booking was the fine dining, we had to book a pub last minute on a Saturday night which means my husband couldn't drink had to drive to the pub. Our bathroom/wet room shower flooded the floor and the radiator towel rail wasn't working the bathroom was freezing. We reported it but they didn't do anything that rectified this and same thing happened the 2nd morning we had an inch of water on the whole floor and it was a huge bathroom. Overall my birthday experience wasn't what I was expecting and no answer has been received to my letter sent afterwards so far.

"Experience of a party evening so disappointed on so many levels,"

1
Discover31185808584, Felixstowe, United Kingdom 07/12/2021

There are so many issues I honestly do not know where to start I am utterly so disappointed with the entire evening!! on arrival we were shown to our tables as soon as we entered the marquee it appeared cold. There was no extra curtains or protection on that side from the outside just a clear piece of plastic with gaps along the bottom and in between the sides. We initially asked if there was any curtains could be pulled across as the other side of the room was completely covered. Our server said he would check , I had to ask again as nothing had been sorted , although a small heater was there this was obviously not enough to provide any sort of heat . I wasn't happy and went to the reception for advice and was told they would speak to the manager( which I didn't see at all at any point during the evening exceptionally poor customer service ??) if we were aware the christmas party evening was in a marquee and not inside Seckford Hall I may of looked to book elsewhere as I wouldn't expect at this time of year to be outside in the cold. Surely you don't expect your guests to wear their coats to a sit down 3 course meal ?? As the evening went along the coldness got worse in the end we just gave up as it was obvious there wasn't a solution to our problem. when our food did arrive the soup was cold and 2 guests on our table didn't eat the soup but this was just taken away no questions no apology!! I had ordered a gluten free meal as I'm a coeliac my starter arrived was just a piece of terrine with chutney “no bread” again I had to ask the server and it took ages to arrive by this time everyone else on the table had finished eating (such poor service) my main meal arrived photo attached/obviously I understand gluten free is an exception to most but you do advertise you are able to cater for GF. It just seemed that you took away items not gluten-free which left me with a very small meal, I was very disappointed with my meal and did not expect this from a 2AA Rosette restaurant. Also other guests from my group felt disappointed with their food as it was mostly cold not hot food at all. The bar was very busy not enough staff working and we had to go to the other bar past the reception to order drinks (obviously not ideal to carry drinks though the hotel) Such a disappointing evening your website clearly gives a totally different outlook to the evening I experienced !!!

Dreamer12135475303, St Osyth, United Kingdom 06/12/2021

So disappointed It was our wedding anniversary and we have visited many times and always loved it. Not this time…… We arrived expecting to be shown to our room upstairs which we had personally requested but NO. We were given our key and vaguely directed through the hall to room 30. We couldn't believe it when we walked in, the room was freezing and so tiny we were totally shocked. We went straight back to reception but no joy that was it we were stuck there. The bathroom was sooooo small it was hard to close the door and we never managed to get the radiator to work we were told it was broken and they would send us a heater which never arrived. The hall was skimpily decorated for the festive season the restaurant had very little in the way of atmosphere. Such a shame for such a beautiful building the last straw was being seated for breakfast outside of the restaurant in a corridor which they called the garden room and we had to walk back to the restaurant and carry food back to our table. Such a shame NEVER AGAIN!!!!!!!

Intended to stay for more than a week but had to limit stay to a single night due to change in circumstances. Have rebooked to stay for 12 nights in the new year. Service was excellent and the food quality was very good. Room was very comfortable with only one minor problem which was quickly fixed. Beautiful setting in lovely grounds. Staff consistently friendly and helpful.

"Poor organisation and customer service"

evodowd, Hertford, United Kingdom 30/11/2021

Initially I had booked for a spa treatment and overnight stay. Despite the fact the swimming pool and jacuzzi was closed (I would also like to add that the marketing for this wasn't clear as I only saw this for the first time on the email confirmation...) we resorted to the fact that at least we would be able to use the gym and sauna facilities along with a massage we had booked. However, on the Saturday morning of our stay we found that the gym and spa facilities were closed. After enquiring at reception, it materialised that the receptionist was not aware of our booking and that the whereabouts of the masseuse were unknown. On top of this, despite the sign on the gym stating that it would be open at 10am, all facilities were locked. We were then advised that we would need to wait for the masseuse's arrival and then wait until it could be set up and for the facilities to be opened. Considering this was the prime aim of our trip to Woodbridge, it has left us extremely frustrated. As a result, we had to cut our stay short. Since then, I have tried to contact the customer service team and not one person has replied. This is incredible poor service and I would not recommend to stay here.

I have terminal cancer and whilst I am still able I try to go away to stay at hotels, at the weekend, with my wife. On 14th September 2021 I noticed that Best Western were running a special offer where a room could be booked for £48. I looked at the hotels involved in this special offer and came across Seckford Hall and late on the 14th I booked a double room but when the conformation came through I noticed that the booking was for one guest rather than two. I telephoned the next day to amend the booking from one person to two and was told that there would be an additional charge of £50. I stated that I thought this extortionate and that I could book a double room for my wife for £48 and save myself £2. I also mentioned the predicament I was in with regards to my terminal illness hoping that a little compassion would be shown. The person who I spoke to was adamant that an additional £50 was required if I wanted to add my wife as an additional guest. I therefore telephoned Best Western customer services who kindly waved the charge and sent me an email through adding my wife as the additional guest. On 20th November we went to the hotel and I queried why an additional charge was made for an extra guest, this I was told was because extra towels would need to be put in the room. Putting a bath towel and hand towel in the bedroom for £50 does to me sound rather expensive.

We booked a stay here on the 19th November and were very impressed when we pulled up. The outside of the building was beautiful and we were really excited for our stay. The check in process was quick and staff were friendly. We were shown to our room and so disappointed as it looked nothing at all like the photos online! It had a tiny bathroom that had a faulty towel rail and the bed was a very small double. We had dinner at the restaurant, menu was different to what we had seen online but food was good. Heating in our bedroom did not work and the windows let in quite a draft. We had breakfast booked the next morning that was very good. We then checked out and were told by the member of staff we were in credit on our account but as it had been booked using a voucher we couldn't have the money back so were offered a complimentary bottle of champagne. You can imagine my surprise when later that day, after we had checked out, I received an email to say there was an outstanding payment on the account for a “drinks bill”. I explained we had been told we were in credit at checkout and asked for an explanation. We had no further correspondence from Seckford hall and when i checked my account I saw they had taken an unauthorised payment for this “drinks bill”. They have provided no invoice or itemised list nor explanation of why we were told we were in credit and now being charged?! I have made a formal complaint and will need to contact my bank. I would not recommend this venue to anybody.

Lovely Tudor property with excellent period features and surrounding grounds (great for a walk) The food was great (breakfast and dinner) the service was good, room in need of modernisation or improvement gym and leisure facilities closed far too early for people at the hotel on business. Other than the slight negatives of room and leisure access the stay was great and I would stay again.

I had a great stay at Seckford Hall. The building was breathtakingly beautiful and the historic decor created the magical feeling of going back in time. Staff were polite and friendly, which is always reassuring. My room was also absolutely beautiful too! Tudor style with a elaborately carved headboard. My colleague did not get so lucky, as his room was more modern. Please decorate all rooms like mine!

John-traveller2015, Andover, United Kingdom 14/11/2021

This is a lovely hotel - stunning looks. Mostly it was very good, except the bathroom in our room a Junior Suite, was just not big enough. The toilet was placed so you had to step over it / around it to get tto the shower. The bathroom radiator and light did not work, there were cracks in the tiles and the sink was coming away from the wall. If you stay ask for a room with a proper sized bathroom - the one in our Junior Suite was tiny and not comfortable to use.

"25th anniversary"

1
User 14/11/2021

We booked a 3 night stay at Seckford Hall to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary. We booked a luxury suite and on first appearance the place looked amazing. Then came the reality, heating in the bathroom not working, tiles broken in the floor, very dirty windows, paint/plaster coming off the walls. The dining room heating was not working and as for the menu it was pathetic for a four star establishment. The general manager did not seem bothered about the complaints and did very little if anything during our stay. It was amazing that two different guests felt compeled to help us celebrate from their own pocket whilst there was hardly a mention from the top management.

I don't usually give feedback but in this instance I feel compelled to. I was assured that the manager would contact us to discuss our issues within four days of leaving. It is the sixth day and no contact. Reading through other reviews the same issues reappear. Previous fans of seckford, having recently revisited confirm that seckford hall has fallen on hard times.. from what I can find out Seckford hall was sold in 2019 to The Best Western hotel chain. Then there was the pandemic. We sympathise but not providing value for money now, will damage the long term reputation of the hotel We were booked into the seckford suite with our parents in the Tudor suite . The en suite in the Tudor suite backs onto the seckford en suite . We were there to attend our sons / grandson wedding . *before arriving we were informed that the pool was out of action a couple of days before arriving yet we discovered that the pool has been out of action for some time now. So if your booked into this hotel for a spar weekend phone ahead and double check, * Twice I attempted to book a spa treatment and was told that they were fully booked. My husband then went to the spa building to use the gymn facilities ( small gymn) it was all locked up with no one on duty in the spa. So your paying for a hotel spa stay but no spa. * upon arrival and filling in registration it asks if you want a paper we said yes only to be told that we couldnt have one can't get them delivered. *The WiFi signal is extremely poor and frustrating so I couldn‘t get news on my devices . No sky Tv available. *Upon arrival in the room we boiled the kettle which promptly leaked all over the table and carpet. It was swapped for us. *We also reported the fact that the main ceiling light was crackling and the lights were flickering on and off indicating a wiring problem . I don't know if it's been repaired as we were not notified and so didn't use the light. *There are four plug sockets next to the dresser at the entrance to the bathroom. The two nearest the entrance don't work whilst the other two do. Given the light issue the electrics in this room need a review ASAP. *The telly is plugged into an extension lead on open display across the floor which only further adds to the overall sad tired effect *The chest of draws under the mirror is missing a handle . * I ttempted to adujust the incline on The adjustable settee only for the wooden knob to come off. It appears to have had some previous repair with glue I I put it back on best I could When we went to bed something was sticking in my back side and when I investigated it further I found a small dog biscuit in the bed with us! ( it was passed midnight ) on inside of door leading to terrace - cobwebs (and flies caught up in them )and the black mould engrained on the inside of the door due to it not being weather proofed. . Decor The mismatch brown furniture from different eras in an attempt to capture an olde Elizabethan charm has failed miserably . The chairs and settee are threadbare looking dirty and tired. The rug is tired and dirty Th green carpet is ugly The curtains are lost as there is no reference point in the room for them and so just look totally out of place . The first impression of a two hundred pounds a night room was underwhelming and reminiscent of nursing home communal lounge. The bathroom is in an eighties Greek themed style for some reason with a poor finish. The terrace is a missed opportunity. It is a fairly large area but with only a small table and two chairs on a piece of faux grass. This area should be a pleasant private garden and if a sofa bed was included in the room is could be a great family room. Great for romantic weekends and great for those with dogs. It should have sun loungers along with plants and shrubs . I had a peak at the next room when house keeping were in and it appeared far more luxurious. Reading through the reviews some believe that they stayed in a newly renovated room so it may be that the hotel is having some investment, it just has reached all areas yet. I did not eat dinner in the restaurant but did have breakfast which we had no complaints with. Our parents were in the Tudor suite where the brass had been lovingly polished. We know this because the stench of Brasso was overwhelming and I mean overwhelming. Permeating bedding and clothes and my mother in law developed a cough. So extreme was the smell it actually permeated through into their en suite and by the second day all we could smell in our bathroom was Brasso. Sleep We tried sleeping with the terrace door open every night to try and get comfortable as it is far too hot and the fan provided is a waste of space Heater in marque(wedding venue) Needs replacing with a heater that can be kept on and the temperature can be adjusted . All night we had to put the heater on get incredibly hot and then when it turns itself off it's ok for about 30 mins but then people were having to put blankets round them. We had to repeat this hot cold cycle throughout the entire evening

Returned to Seckford Hall in October, 3rd time here. It is very unfortunate that the spa area is not really up and running, you can have treatments but there is no pool or bubble pool, however facial was excellent - it was hard to book as there was no one manning the spa phone for months. The evening meal was excellent, bar was poor - no able to do any cocktails, not even bellini!

"Dirty, overpriced, misleading advertising"

User 29/10/2021

We spent one night at Seckford Hall in a standard double room this summer. I would first like to say that the lady on reception was incredibly helpful when we checked in and arranged for the kitchen to make us sandwiches despite the fact we'd missed the last lunch sitting. I have no complaints about the staff at the hotel. My complaint is about the room. The photos on the website are absolutely not an accurate representation of the room we stayed in. Based on the website we were expecting a stylish room decorated to a high standard with little touches of luxury. What we got was a room which was incredibly shabby, dated, un-loved and worst of all un-clean. The bathroom was simply not clean. I don't know how long it had been since someone had given it a thorough clean. There was a thick layer of dust around the top of the tiles, clumps of dust and hair on the floor and around the shower screen, filthy skirting boards, rust stains on the floor from the toilet brush, horrible mastic around the bath which definitely wasn't done by a professional. In the room itself there was just a total lack of care and attention. Paint all over the cheap plastic curtain rail, paint all over the door frames where someone had just slapped it on, and paint stains on the carpet. The overall effect was that of a neglected room which had been made-over as cheaply as possible. It's a real shame because the proportions of the room and the windows are lovely and it could be something quite special if given the proper love and care it deserves. My husband and I were coming for a one night break to relax and celebrate our wedding anniversary, and I didn't want to ruin the short break we had by complaining and having the hassle and stress of moving rooms. So we put up with it but felt very strongly that the room was incredibly overpriced, and the pictures on the website are very misleading. I sent an email to the hotel explaining everything above and attaching photos of the filthy bathroom and wasn't even given the courtesy of a response. I also replied to the survey which was emailed out to me, again, no response. Today I received an email from the hotel telling me about a VIP offer and 'trusting that I enjoyed me stay'. This just riled me!! I've never written a negative review on trip advisor before, but when my feedback and complaints were completely ignored by the hotel and their marketing company, and then my email address is used for a mass mail out, I feel utterly frustrated. The attached photos show the filthy bathroom. You'll notice in one photo the tissue covered in dust and grime which I wiped over the top of the tiles. Simply not good enough.

What a lovely location! OK, we did book a spa hotel, so not being able to use the pool was disappointing, but there's so much to do in the area, that it didn't really matter. (We were also made aware of this upon booking, so it wasn't a complete surprise.) Staff were all very professional- friendly, polite and helpful. Our room was clean, spacious and well equipped (ensuite with rolltop bath & claw feet was nice too). The beautiful old features, traditional log fire and lovely grounds made it feel a luxurious stay. We also enjoyed delicious breakfasts and a very pleasant evening meal. Woodbridge is a pretty town with lots of independent shops, and makes a good base to explore this part of East Anglia. Great value for money for Best Western Reward members. Thanks for a relaxing few days.

My husband and I took three days out to cheer up and explore Suffolk as was difficult to get to Barcelona to see my mum (not seen her for 2 years!) This hotel looks grand and I was happy if was a Spa I could use! The room looked fine in the afternoon without the lights on but at night when we got to bed I realised the linen was ...dirty!...the more I looked the worst it looked!on my husband side there was blood stained I was embarrassed to make a song and dance about it as it was past 11:30 at night!...when we told them in the morning the bed was changed! that was that...couldn't book the Spa either! Fully booked we were told, the hotel half empty! and the pool was closed fue to repairs!...what suppose to be a special couple of nights snd three days away to cheer us up made us unhappy, we argued, and we feel we were conned!..the manager looked as though we were just winging and as we paid the full price of a 4 star! personally the whole hotel exoerience was highly disappointing it looked gravy and quite filthy!...and on passing by the rooms there was a door open where housekeeping keeps the linen...it was atrocious to see piles of sheets on the floor and others pushed in cubboards all seems mixed dirty with clean ! What a mess!! Never again!

Went here yesterday for afternoon tea (birthday treat). Food was average, not many sandwiches, two enormous scones each, one of which was cheese!! Asked as advised in another review to change these but told this was not possible. Service was good when given, but in the main after he brought our tea (no choices given) and food we were ignored. Also the scones were dry like stale bread, certainly not fresh. Had tea here 2 years ago and it was much nicer.

We bought a voucher back in the depths of the pandemic. I'd stayed here once a couple years ago so I was on their books. The place seems greatly improved and is difficult to fault which is hard with such an old property. Great experience. Recommended.

The most terrible weekend away in a hotel I have ever had. I chose this place because it was my partner's birthday treat. I booked it because it had a nice restaurant, spa and swimming pool. I booked the spa for my partner and a special birthday dinner. When we arrived I was told the pool was closed and (no notification on the website when I booked) And even though I booked a table in the restaurant and had a confirmation email they said it was not on there system. Do there wasn't a table available. The person on reception was not very helpful and rude. The room had no working heating and we woke up to find cockroaches on the floor.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay . It does state on our website that the spa is closed and the email confirmation you received on booking clearly states the pool is closed. Your second confirmation also stated this, as did your prearrival notice which was sent 3 days prior to arrival. We are sorry to hear that you found our Receptionist unhelpful and rude. This will be addressed with the person concerned. We did book you a table for the 2nd night of your stay which you chose to cancel. The insects which you discovered were most definately not cockroaches as we have had our pest control company in to check this. Thank you for your feedback. Regards Moira GM

Visited with my daughter for an afternoon tea . All the staff we interacted with were very polite, the service was excellent and the setting was lovely. However although the savouries and cakes were very nice the fruit scones ,which we consider the highlight of the entire experience, were dry and didn't taste fresh and the second scone was cheese which neither of us enjoy so we would have appreciated the option to choose another fruit or plain one instead.

"Underwhelming for a wedding stay"

EmBeTrav, Essex, United Kingdom 14/10/2021

We arrived for a two night stay for a wedding and having stayed before and loved our time we were very excited for our visit. Unfortunately a few days before arrival we were informed that the spa facilities (pool/ jacuzzi) were closed and when asked what other facilities were on site we were told ‘depend on the weather, if it's bad then not much' which put a bit of a downer on the start of the stay. Throughout the stay the bar was often unstaffed, and despite a large group staying in varying rooms ahead of the wedding all pre-booked for over a year, only one member of staff had been allocated, but also had ‘other errands' meaning the poor guy tried his best but was run off his feet. Lots of the staff were disinterested and weren't overly willing to help. We loitered in reception for over an hour on arrival waiting for someone who knew what was happening and were made to feel like we were an inconvenience. The grounds are stunning and it's a perfect location, good food, but unfortunately the attention to detail and service fell very short of what was expected for the price of a ‘luxury hotel' and the importance of the wedding.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review

I stayed at the Seckford Hall hotel a week ago with my 2 dogs in room 39A, a junior suite room I think. Prices were very reasonable and although alone there was a separate room with a sofa bed. The decor looked like it had been recently renovated and was tasteful and in addition I had a small roof terrace where I could have sat had the weather been nicer. The building and the grounds were amazing. I didn't use the spa as I had no time but again all looked well kept and I heard from people that did that the staff and treatments were lovely. I got lost on the way to the hotel ( the sat nav takes you to a housing estate nearby) and was guided very patiently to the hotel by a lovely Scottish lady whose name I didn't get but should be commended for her patience and taking the time with me as I'm sure she had other duties to attend to. I found all the staff lovely from the young boys running the bar and reception to the staff in the restaurant who happily set up a table for me and the pooches in the garden room. Nothing was too much trouble. I had read some of the negative reviews on here and honestly could not believe I was ( or they were?) staying in the same place. This hotel is charming and a hidden gem for the price and quality of my room. I felt like I was staying in a country house hotel. Yes there could be improvements but it all costs money and we are just coming out of a pandemic so all in all I think the hotel is heading in the right direction. Some tweaks such as interior decoration updating in the main building and possibly relocating the reception desk ( currently it feels like it's located in a corridor cut thru, but honestly I don't know where else they could have it?) The beautiful room as you enter the hotel to the left with a gorgeous fire place looked underused and would be lovely to sit in ( as a bar type area) in the evenings for a cocktail. As I was restricted by the dogs to the bar maybe others were doing this? All in all I had a lovely, if quick business trip and would happily return and spend a few nights there and maybe get to experience the spa and pool area when it reopens.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your kind words. We are pleased you (and the dogs) enjoyed your stay and we hope you will return to visit again maybe for pleasure rather than business. Regards Moira GM

Home today after a lovely 3 night break. The room was spotless. We had one meal in the Garden Room and two in the 1530. The meals were delicious and of a high standard. Breakfast was cooked to order, and again, very good. All the staff were very courteous, friendly and helpful. Thank you !!

"wedding anniversary return visit"

ClaireT675, York, United Kingdom 08/10/2021

We had our reception here 25years ago and returned to spend our anniversary in the same room! Of course things had changed over time but the 4 poster bed was the same one and the room was very comfortable. The spa bath was clean and we had a roof terrace to enjoy. The oak paneling in the great hall has remained I was thrilled to see but the restaurant has been updated with modern furniture that just doesn't fit in with the age and character of this beautiful building. The food and service was lovely but as previous reviews have said, the lake and its immediate grounds could do with some upkeep. The pool has been out of action for months which was disappointing but overall it was an absolute treat to return for our special celebration. I would strongly recommend a stay here.

We stayed with our dog in a garden junior suite. The accommodation was fantastic, the staff were really helpful and very friendly and the food was wonderful. There were three separate but inter connected rooms in the suite. The pool is out of action but there is a sauna, steam and gym. The grounds of the hotel are fabulous for walking the dog and the hotel location is perfect for a trip to Sutton Hoo and Framlingham castle, both of these are fascinating places and dog friendly

"Super Hotel, not so sure about the restaurant"

The grounds, the building, the service at this hotel are all truly wonderful. Just look at the pictures that most people post, this place is chocolate box quality to look at, the people that work here try hard to give the best service and are worthy of a mention. So why only 3 stars? Outside is lovely, there is a brilliant view of the building, and a superb lawn out back used for afternoon teas and cocktails. So what a pity that the fountain in the middle of the garden looks neglected, with stagnant water dominating, it's such an obvious eyesore. You could say it's the elephant in the garden!! In addition, there's a small lake further out that also looks totally neglected. It might possibly be big enough to take on the Great British Bake Off but doesn't do the necessary maintenance to make it an attractive option Inside is also very nice. however, the dining area is soulless. It needs an interior designer to make something of it. Is that all? No. The food is kind of what was called 'Nouveau Cuisine' a while back. Mainly discredited as insufficient food at high prices. It was cooked well, but portions were extremely small. I blame this not on the staff but on 'Best Western'. They need to wake up to the possibilities of this hotel before nobody goes there any more.

I decided to treat my wife to a spa treatment and weekend away at the beautiful Seckford Hall for our 28th Wedding Anniversary. The setting was perfect, the staff excellent and the experience wonderful. The only issue really was with the swimming pool, which apparently had a fault and had to be closed but the Gym, Sauna, Steam room and treatments were all available and we used them! The breakfast was lovely with a fantastic range of buffet and freshly cooked items, all of good quality but we did not get to use the restaurant, partly because of other plans. Partly because it was fully booked and partly because the menu didn't overly appeal to us but the food we saw being served, looked amazing. Our room was clean, tidy and in good condition with a king sized bed and modern en-suite. We were in the old part of the hotel, over the front entrance which wasn't a problem. It was in the very old part of the building, which itself is steeped in history. The grounds are beautiful, the location good (for us at least) and I was surprised how busy the hotel was, considering the fact there was no wedding or function that weekend. That tells me, they are getting it right! I'd go back in a heartbeat should the opportunity arise again. It was the most comfortable and enjoyable stay we've had in a long time and we do tend to get away for weekends whenever possible. Well done Seckford Hall. Keep up the good work, team ethic and customer service.

We did a Sunday sleep over voucher deal for my paramedic friend who deserved a break as she's been on the front line. Our room was stunning, it was large and clean. However our bath tap was broken and it was leaking all over the floor so we had to use the shower instead. The lunch we had in the bar area was lovely and the staff were really friendly. Our dinner was lovely, staff was friendly. Breakfast was included in our voucher offer and it was also nice. However the most disappointing thing for us was we couldn't use the spa area it was all shut off when I said this to the manager that I was disappointed she didn't offer us any form of a discount in something else? We went over our dinner plan by £9.00 why didn't they just knock that off our bill or give us a voucher or something? It also didn't state that it would be shut off when I paid for the voucher for me and my paramedic friend. A few days before our stay we got a lousy email saying it would be shut off as the pools broken or something I did email asking what discount would they offer us due to this and nobody bothered to respond back to me which is super rude of the staff to do that!! Im hoping writing a review will warn others before they book to be careful about the spa area is shut off and someone from seckford hall offers us an apology discount or something. This was our second visit our first visit was great and the spa area was all open however our second visit was disappointing.

blueflinders2018, Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom 01/10/2021

We had a most enjoyable Sunday/Monday night break in a Junior Suite around the courtyard, which is separate from the main hotel. The room was spotless and the bedding and towels were good quality. We dined in the restaurant on the Sunday evening and the food was lovely, although there was limited choice. Breakfast was amazing and there was plenty of choice. Full English was hot and fresh and filled us up for the day ahead. All the staff were professional and friendly and the massage in the spa was very relaxing although the pool and jacuzzi are still closed. I am sad to see some negative reviews here, because we didn't encounter any issues at all and will certainly be returning when the weather improves.

Booked a 2 night stay a week in advance and received a booking confirmation. Agreed the no cancellation price. Received a pre- arrival notice from Seckford Hall which recommended booking dinner with them. Contacted the hotel to book dinner and was advised that our room booking had been cancelled and no rooms were available for our stay. We were promised call backs from staff on two occasions which did not materialise and when I eventually spoke with management they advised that they had tried on 3 occasions to contact us to advise of the cancellation. Strangely, no missed calls from the hotel or their booking agents and no attempt to contact us by email or text. By the time we became aware that our room was not available, we had travelled to East Anglia and therefore had travelled in excess of 500 miles during the petrol crisis. No apologies no offers of compensation at all. Thank you Seckford Hall for absolutely nothing. Quite the most appealing display of customer service I have ever experienced.

Having received a monetary voucher as a retirement gift we were very surprised to be greeted with “sorry this is not good enough”. Apparently we should not have booked through booking.com. Although we were told to do this when we previously rang to check how to use the voucher. We were told that nobody in the hotel would have said this. Well they did, and being accused of lying is not a good reception. There seemed to be some communication problems between staff and considerable defensive attitudes. It is a stunning building and little to find fault with other aspects of our stay, although I was still hungry after a three course meal. No food was then available other than crisp and nuts at the bar. The staff were attentive but seemed under pressure and did not appear to be enjoying their work. The management issues we witnessed did put a dampener on our 47th wedding anniversary.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that there was miscommunication regarding your voucher. All our vouchers do state that you must book directly with the hotel. We will address this with the team on Reception. Regards Moira GM

Wow what can I say.. stunning place. On arrival we was greeted by very friendly reception staff and who was very helpful. We stayed in the seckford room 16 it was amazing room with a balcony which I would call a small garden, could probably do with with few plants or something to make use of the space but was lovely to be able to sit out and enjoy the wonderful weather. The room it's self is wonderful, a lovely little touch off the staff was a birthday card which me and my partner said was lovely as staff clearly listened toy partner when booking the room. Only thing we would say is the mattress has seen better days and could do with a new one. The food is outstanding and out of this world the best meal we have both had for a long while. Very gutted the pool and jacuzzi was shut but we both understood why and hope that when visit in future maybe we can use the facilities. Overall an amazing and wonderful stay and couldn't fault the food or staff or our stay at seckford Hall.

As many previous reviews have stated, the external buildings and gardens at Seckford Hall are very attractive & it's a great base from which to visit the delights of Sutton Hoo and the Suffolk coast. Our stay coincided with the annual Rolls Royce Car owners 'jolly' - all very nice people I'm sure and whilst many of the Rolls Royce vehicles did look pretty amazing - it was disappointing to be greeted by signs relegating ‘ordinary' cars to the overflow car parks - in our case next to a rather ‘fragrant' tank. The greeting at reception was friendly and informative on day one, though on subsequent visits (we had to pass through reception several times a day to get to the main hotel entrance) it was nigh on impossible to get any acknowledgment from the reception staff - it seemed they were more interested in their computers than guests, the exception was at check-out when we received a cheery goodbye and ‘did you have a nice stay'… well it was OK. Breakfast was fine - sliced bread toast was a bit disappointing given the array of local artisan bakers but the staff were pleasant and helpful. Our room was again OK - rather hot at night but it suffered from small details like fixtures not really ‘fixed' but wobbly and seemingly about to fall off. Just over £150.00 a night for bed and breakfast for a mid-week break did feel a tad expensive - perhaps the Rolls-Royce folk had inadvertently increased the price for everyone else - oh well!

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry you felt relegated to the overflow car parks due to the Rolls Royce Club cars parking at the front of the hotel. The car owners paid a substantially amount for this priority due to the insurance value of their vehicles to protect them from accidental damage.. Our Reception team are constantly dealing with phone calls , bedroom reservation, enquiry emails and much more so do become absorbed in their work. I am sorry they didn't acknowledge you when you passed through Reception. Thank you for your review. Regards Moira GM

We had a lovely stay at Seckford Hall but finding it was rather traumatic! If you put the Seckford Hall postcode into your sat nav it takes you through a housing estate to a dead end. The housing estate must be getting used to cars having to turn round in front of their houses and drivers looking frazzled. It took us about 40 minutes going round and round trying to find it through country lanes until we found the very straightforward way off the A12. We arrived rather frazzled and mentioned this to the receptionist who said three other arrivals had said the same thing that day! Even when we had a taxi into Woodbridge and back one evening the taxi driver ended up in the dead end too. Perhaps it would be a good idea to give simple directions to the hotel in the booking confirmation?

It is a privilege to stay in a perfect Tudor manor house that feels really old, but updated somewhat with many of the luxuries we expect today. It is a magical experience, a bit like ‘Through the Looking Glass', certainly a wonderful choice for a wedding or a weekend break. The food is exceptionally good, beautifully presented and with flavours to die for especially at dinner. Although we much enjoyed our stay, there are 3 ways in which Seckford Hall disappointed us. (1) Anyone choosing red meat should be advised that it is normally served rare to medium rare. A warning to customers would save embarrassment. (2) The food is exceptionally rich and unhealthy, and would be greatly enhanced by a side order of fresh seasonal vegetables. (3) Service is good but it feels impersonal when compared to that in similar hotels and spas.

"Like a premier inn but not as good and a lot more expensive"

Robhowletts, Cambridge, United Kingdom 12/09/2021

Really disappointed. I wanted to love it as it is a beautiful old building, but it is very tarred and unloved. Premier is all a bit musty breakfast average, truly a premier inn experience The setting is great and the ground should be lovely but again these are also very unloved almost no plants, a couple of parched conifers in some of the flower beds weeds I'm not the lovely English country Garden that should be there. So sad to give a bad review but it really isn't up to it needs a bit of love and attention especially if it's to justify its prices

"I WANTED THIS TO BE 5 STARS"

2
User 10/09/2021

We stayed 4 nights at a cost of £800 plus food, 1st room 2 nights fine, 2nd room dairy cottage away from main house damp smell by the downstairs bathroom, broken light switch & broken tiles on bathroom floor. Bar food very slow, staff very friendly but I felt there hands are tied by the lack of investment by B.W. The building is stunning. Had a 2am alarm from the golf club next door Best Western should insist they install a silent alarm. If you stay in the main house I'm sure it'll be 5 STARS

"Great hotel, lovely staff but please get new, comfier pillows..not comfortable and couldn't sleep."

User 07/09/2021

This is a great hotel, the staff were just great, the food and building is something. The one issue the pillows seemed old and were not comfortable .... We checked all of them. Please could you update the pillows or get newer ones. This was in the main house so maybe the newer rooms have new more comfy pillows. Asides from that, can't complain at all. We will be back.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay. I will ask our Head Housekeeper to look into replacing some of the older pillows with new. I Hope it won't be long before we have the opportunity to welcome you back to Seckford. Regards Moira GM

"Standards have fallen"

User 06/09/2021

Having previously stayed at Seckford Hall, we experienced several differences on this visit. The tired looking room with carpet stains, paintwork marked in several places & bathroom cabinets with open holes from a previous installation. Hot water taking far too long to attain an acceptable temperature - waste of water. The landing and stairway looks 'tired'. The greatly reduced menu options (possibly covid related), total lack of vegetables & a souflee which was clearly a sponge pudding. Best Western bought Seckford Hall last year and perhaps some investment is now required. There was nothing inherently awful about the hotel but a 4 star venu should be just that, and not rest on its laurels due to the surroundings and the building type. The staff however were helpful and clearly hard working. . ..

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear you were disappointed with your room. The hotel has had some refurbishment over the last year and is continuing to do so. We now have a number of new menus across the hotel including our a la carte, bar & lounge menu and snack menu. I hope you will give us another opportunity in the future. Regards Moira GM

"Beautiful hotel"

4
NorfolkBroad2, Holt, United Kingdom 02/09/2021

I had tried to ring the hotel several times, even pressing different numbers to get through to the dining room and spa just to speak to somebody as reception weren't picking up. I was beginning to think it was closed. I managed to leave a message but nobody called back. Anyway, we did manage to get a room via a booking agency and got a good deal. I agree with a previous review that when we arrived, we weren't really greeted very nicely, more like…. Yes? as though we hadn't just arrived clutching our bags. I did feel we were interrupting. We were allocated a lovely room in the main house. A huge, very comfortable bed and lovely en-suite. I was slightly disappointed with the quality and lack of toiletries - only shampoo, conditioner and shower gel. Dinner was fine, although the menu wasn't very ambitious, so had veggie options, because more thought sometimes seems to be made with vegetarian dishes. The breakfast was superb. Huge choice of fruit, yoghurts, croissants and cooked dishes. It was lovely. The house itself is beautiful, I'm not sure about some of their choices of light fittings and furniture, but the lounge was gorgeous, full of velvet sofas and armchairs and very comfortable. Overall, it was fine. I would definitely stay again. Such a pity the pool was closed, but apparently there's a crack in it.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and I hope you will return when the pool is repaired. We have just changed our menus again so hopefully, you will find something you fancy on these. We will do some more training with the Reception team following your feedback. Regards Moira GM

"Standards dropped considerably"

1
CapriGTSteve, Watford, United Kingdom 31/08/2021

I used to stay here on business, and also recommended this hotel to clients. So, I thought I would take the family for a short 2 night stay. I wish I hadn't. TBH I could write a very long review, but in trying to condense it, our major gripes: 1] Shower only dangerously hot or freezing cold with low water pressure. Reported and told nothing wrong, just have to let it run for a few mins ( 20 mins obviously not long enough). 2] Evening meal luke warm and roast beef chewy, and appeared to have been sitting on the side for a while. Complained and received "I am sorry about that". We cancelled our table reservation for the 2nd night and went into Woodbridge instead which was a great decision. 3] I booked 2 rooms and they allocated the smallest room to the booking for 2 people, and a largish room to 1 person 4] Toilet paper not refilled . The standards at the hotel have dropped considerably, along with the attention to detail ( for example, very few of the picture frames are level). Although the building and setting are stunning, the 4 star rating is not warranted. We paid £199 per night room rate, on a special promotion, and could have got a lot better value for money elsewhere. I would recommend people book another hotel, but do visit Seckford for lunch / tea , as the hotel and grounds are stunning.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay. I will look into your concerns and address them with the team as this is not our usual standard. Regards Moira GM

Our room was really not what we were expecting. Very small and the room looked like it should have been a large storage cupboard as it was a very strange shape so not what I expected for almost £300 for one night stay.

Had a wonderful romantic break here. Stunning building oozing history with wonky floors, ancient doors & woodwork. Sympathetically restored by current owners as a very popular wedding venue & hotel. We had the Seckford Room on 1st floor of main building. A little tired in places but all added to the authentic historical feel. Cute 4 poster bed, not for 6 footers but, again, nothing original ever was made to the scales of modern times. Lovely grounds to wander around & a mapped out country stroll if you fancy a longer walk. Free parking & spa (which we didn't experience) although the pool is closed indefinitely. The dinner was DIVINE!! Amazing quality. Well deserved it's awards. Friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommend and look forward to staying again.

"Disappointing Fantastic Friday deal. I wouldn't recommend."

2
risnog01, Brighton, England, United Kingdom 27/08/2021

My partner and I booked this as a treat to get away. We booked the supreme room deal. 2 days prior, we were emailed to say the swimming pool and jacuzzi would be closed. This was such an important part of it for us so we called them and were told a supervisor would call back. No call received. On arrival, staff were robotic. They didn't say "hello", just "have you got a booking?". I felt we were more of an inconvenience. I mentioned I was expecting a call for the supervisor re. the pool but they said there was no supervisor available now. The advert for a supreme room shows a 4 poster bed and bath and a gorgeous, light room. We were taken to a large single room with a small double crammed in it. The walls were black and there was a tiny window and no bath. I'm not one to be fussed about dust but as it was so dark, the central light was obvious and absolutely covered in thick dust, it was all you could see from looking up in the bed. I asked for a different room which I've never done before but it was so radically different from what was advertised. I was told we were never told there would be a bath or 4 poster bed. No apology or anything. Again, I was an inconvenience. The next room we had was better but the bathroom light flickered but I'd got to the point of realising the staff didn't really care so I just wanted to enjoy the short trip. I was told the spa and steam room were still open. All doors on the building were locked when we went at around 4pm. I asked staff in the main building but they just said it should be open. So we gave up on that one. The redeeming factor was the food. Both bar and restaurant food is good quality and the waiting staff provided good service. Our table was as a fellow diner described it "in a corridor" aka the garden room. In honesty, it is a corridor but a wide one and in such an old building, they can't be moving walls around so I don't blame them. The menus are print outs and tatty (with old food from the last diners spilled on them). A quick and cheap fix would be to ensure clean prints for each diner. Overall, as other reviews say, the place needs a good investor to make upgrade it. It's a wonderful old tudor building and fortunately subsequent owners haven't ruined it. But it could do with a good wad of cash to upgrade things. It's a bit odd- there's some fantastic old furniture mixed in with really cheap tatty stuff. There's no flowers in the garden where it has such potential for an authentic tudor garden. Nevertheless, I wouldn't complain about this. Times are hard for hotels. What upset me was the service. No supervisor ever did contact me and we never received anything for the lack of services advertised and paid for. We received no discount of the extra £100 we spent on meals. Even if it's a money thing, 10% off your next trip, another gesture or just a call back would have been something to show they care. Reception staff never showed that and they are the first people you see and the last ones so give you that final impression. Feeling valued as a guest doesn't require big costs and Seckford Hall really needs to appreciate that.

"Don't fall for suggested upgrades."

We stayed here with my very spoilt Cocker spaniel Fred. He does not like noise, poor quality food, unfriendly people or dirty bedrooms. Luckily he was not disappointed. Firstly the hotel is beautiful. The grounds are extremely well kept and fitting for such an historic building. Fred enjoyed walking the grounds and eyeing the ducks on the lake. The location is very quiet and peaceful away from any roads. At night we didn't hear a sound. Fred heard the odd owl. The room was spacious, very clean and the enormous bed very comfortable. Bathrobes, toiletries and tea/coffee were provided. There was a folder in the room full of information about the facilities, local area and history of the hall. This was very useful. We had a huge mirror in our room which made us look 10lbs thinner. I loved it!! I blame the breakfasts for putting on 5lb! There is a huge selection of healthy and not so healthy choices. This included a wide range of cooked food but also fresh fruit and pastries. Last but not least..the staff are very attentive and organised. I had a facial and massage on a Saturday- wonderful. We had a fantastic stay and will recommend this hotel to friends and family.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review

"Awful communication and poorly informed staff"

I have tried to contact this location to use a wedding present gift voucher for a one night 'VIP' stay. Unfortunately I have been unable to get as far as reaching anyone who can actually assist me. I have made three phone calls, was told on two occasions I would receive a call back but didn't, sent two e-mails and requested contact from a manager due to my frustration but I still wait to hear back. On the first contact I was left trying to explain to the member of staff what the voucher I was using was, what it included etc to the point where they told me they had never heard of it and that the photograph of the hotel on the third parties web-site wasn't even Seckford Hall Hotel! I was promised a call back- nothing. I made two further calls and thought I was getting somewhere when I was told the booking system was being set up to allow me to use my voucher- I would get a call back- nothing. I then sent an e-mail asking for contact from someone in a position to help me- no response. If you are planning to spend thousands of pounds on your big day- be wary! We are told the hospitality trade needs support- clearly Seckford Hall doesn't.

On the 19th August 2021, we had our wedding day at Seckford hall. And what a special day it was! The grounds and the hotel looked amazing! Holly planned every last detail with us and Anna, Ben, alex and Rosie made our dream day a reality! Everything we needed they would have ready for us and no task was too much to ask! The spa area is beautiful and the food is absolutely stunning! If you are thinking of booking your wedding here or even just staying for a couple of nights We cannot recommend it enough! Thank you to the Seckford team for all that you did to make our day they best memory we will every have!

"Beautiful hotel with lots of character"

L O, Wigan, United Kingdom 20/08/2021

The hotel was full of character set in beautiful grounds. The room was spacious and very clean. The staff were very helpful and accommodating. We're we're allocated room 5 which was in the main part of the house with a four poster bed. The location was excellent for exploring Suffolk and I would definitely stay here again.

"Beautiful Tudor mansion lovely short break"

Lesdar, Cromer, United Kingdom 19/08/2021

We have just returned from a 2 night break here to celebrate a birthday treat. The mansion is beautiful, steeped in history. We stayed in the Tudor 4 poster bedroom which was fabulous and had a beautiful bathroom. The room was immaculately cleaned as was the whole hotel. Breakfasts were fantastic and plenty of choice and all the staff were so attentive nothing was too much trouble for them. They had even left a birthday card in the room for my husband along with the balloons which I had asked for. He had a massage in the Spa as an extra treat and this was very relaxing. We were kept informed all along with phone and emails from the staff. We had a wonderful stayed and enjoyed the architectural merit of the building, old carvings, creaky floors and lots of history.

"Beautiful historic building but let down by some issues"

We stayed for 3 nights in August with our 2 children and had a great break. The good- The hotel and grounds are lovely. The rooms were fine- clean. Plenty of outdoor seating in shade or sun. A great location for access to Woodbridge, Aldeburgh and Orford where we had fun days out. Breakfast and dinner were great and we were well looked after. The staff were lovely and hard working. The not so good- The pool was shut (the main reason we booked with kids), and the spa is so understaffed it is impossible to get a booking. Whilst the staff they have are all good there are not quite enough of them so you feel a little like you are chasing them for more drinks etc. Iron out the above and my rating would be higher.

This was our second visit to this fabulous place and yet again we were not disappointed. In fact, we have literally just returned home and already booked for the Christmas 3 day break. I genuinely cannot understand the few negative reviews. The dining meals are absolutely superb.. some of the best we have ever had. and have been consistent on both of our stays. The rooms do vary in historical features so it's worth booking in advance for specific rooms if you require the full Tudor works, but all are very clean and comfortable and nothing seems to be too much trouble for the staff. The place itself is fabulous... historically interesting and charming with lovely, cosy places to eat a bar meal, very good large dining room and beautiful grounds to walk or to sit out and have a drink under a sun umbrella. A very warm, easy, relaxing and friendly atmosphere which is generated by all of the lovely sstaf. Very professional and yet relaxed and friendly which is a great mix. I highly recommend a visit.

"Wedding party dominated hotel and noise levels disrupted stay"

2
DavidStill, Haltwhistle, United Kingdom 17/08/2021

Great looking hotel but do ask when booking if there are any weddings scheduled and the location of your room. We reserved an Executive Double which was well appointed but it overlooked the area where the wedding was located including a disco to midnight. Make your mind up - a wedding venue or a special hotel for independent travellers.

"Nice stay but improvement needed"

dangJ6723WH, Tewkesbury, United Kingdom 13/08/2021

Overall we had a lovely 2 night stay in this hotel which has beautiful grounds and plenty of charm. Evening food was great also. We stayed in the lodge which is away from the main building which was nice but the shower was poor and in need of replacing. As with many recent reviews the pool and jacuzzi being out of order was frustrating. We were made aware in advance but no reduction in price was offered. Extra staff are needed so guests are not wondering around requesting someone to serve at the bar. Staff were ok but to busy to offer a better service. Clearly this hotel has potential to be great but a few things need sorting first. I would go back but this would depend on reviews improving. Difficult review to write as it is a lovely hotel but frustrating with the issues compared to the price you pay.

Great time visiting this interesting Manor House hotel. The interior of this hotel was very homely and very busy catering for weddings when we visited. Service was very pleasant and attentive from all the bar staff. Very relaxing atmosphere and thoroughly enjoyed the ambience of the place. Highly recommended.

Lovely Tudor building and traditional rooms. Unfortunately no pool working which is why I booked it. Told only day before. Too late to cancel. Suggested I use the local public baths! Some updating of bathroom/toilet needed. Food generally good. Clean. Ample parking.

After lockdown, we needed a break! We managed to get a room for three nights then sat back, ate gorgeous food and relaxed! The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful - they gave us lots of time and attention even though they were clearly very busy with weddings. (What a lovely venue!) Our room looked freshly painted and the bathroom looked new but the hotel still has its old Tudor charm with old features and artefacts. The weather was changeable but in between showers, we sat in the lovely gardens and one day had a gorgeous afternoon tea. We loved it and will definitely go back.

Extraordinarily unhelpful bookings person. Didn't get past the phone call. A pity because we've been here before and liked it. And we're local, so it would have been a good idea to have a bit more grace, even if you cannot accommodate us! There are ways of saying you can't help

"Ignorant staff"

A really disappointing stay at Seckford Hall. We booked in a family room for our family of 4, including 2 small children. The pull of the pool justified the price of the family room (£400+ for two nights vs £150 in a budget hotel). I phoned the hotel for 3 days prior to arrival trying to find out check in and check out times. The reception phone was not picked up and I left a voicemail which wasn't returned. Finally after trying on the 3rd day a brisk woman answered and said she'd tried to return my call. No record on my phone of this. Asked if there were fridges in the room; no. Stated we have a baby and would need a fridge to store milk. She made a note of it on her system. Asked about booking in to the pool, was then told the pool is shut. This wasn't mentioned prior to 2 days before our booking, meaning we couldn't book anywhere else and left us with activities to then research and book (and pay for) to entertain the children. To say it is a complimentary additional is ridiculous, it was a deciding factor in booking the hotel. At check in, Tom on reception was rude to say the least. I confirmed there was a fridge in the room. No he replied there are no fridges, disregarded my comment about phoning up, stating again there are no fridges in the room. When finally I asked to speak to the manager, the other lady on reception said the kitchen could hold the milk. Fabulous and would they provide it at night for the baby to be fed? Suddenly she checked the system and bingo the fridge was in the room. Why this couldn't have been checked by Tom upon my enquiry rather than arguing with me 5mins after stepping foot in the building is beyond me. Asked if a manager could get in touch with me regarding the pool situation and lack of notice. manager was meant to phone the room on the Friday night, no phone call. The room was fine, breakfast plenty, housekeeping staff were so amazing and friendly (was starting to think they only employ miserable people!) Walking about the grounds the place looked tired, planters cultivating weeds, garden furniture rusty and green moss covered, pizza boxes left overspilling in bin outside front door for 2 days. I'd be devastated if this was my wedding venue so little attention paid to detail. On check out asked to speak again to a manager. No manager available (are they furloughed?!). Lady on reception said a manager would be in touch with me. 4 days later no manager has been in touch with me, even though I've sent an email 2 days ago. Really poor for what is meant to be a class act of a hotel.

Staff trying hard but need some coaching and direction on what to do. Absence of a visible supervisor or management to assist them was an issue. I was ill after a lunchtime sandwich at venue and evening meal was mixed - fine /poor. Roomed needed some maintenance / tlc. To be honest disappointing at this price point. Can't recommend and will suffer in the future from lack of repeat customers. Would not take too much to address the issues

"High expectations but such a disappointment"

User 02/08/2021

Booked this for overnight stay for a nearby wedding and friends birthday the following day where we intended to use the pool and spa facilities. The week before we phoned to arrange early check in, even with a weeks notice we were told we couldn't check in before 2pm, we made two further calls during the week, one said we could check in at 1.30pm and would be an extra £30 so one of our party booked this (only to find on the day that the room wasn't ready). Another member was told they could check in at 12:30, again an extra £30 and this room was actually ready - but the mixed messaging was annoying. We also Received a confirmation email the night before our stay saying the pool etc is out of order - no discount applied to our account so we were again disappointed. Our booking included breakfast however the hotel took an extra £30 for breakfast without our permission, one of our party was actually charged £60 for breakfast which should already have been paid for within the booking.com booking. We all had to waste our time phoning up and arranging refunds. There were several other guests during our stay also complaining they had been over charged so this seems very common place so beware, and check your bank accounts! The breakfast staff were grumpy and not very pleasant and the breakfast was average and buffet not well stocked! The room was poorly decorated with paint all over the tiles in the bathroom, didn't look very well loved or kept which was such a shame in such a gorgeous building to see it being poorly kept. I would not stay here again. Only gave the 2 stars because the night Porter was helpful and accommodating.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you were charged for breakfast. Bookings from booking.com come down into our system via the internet and this showed you were on a room only rate; hence, the charge for breakfast. As check out for guests is 11am, early check in at 12.30pm is bookable for £30 extra but we cannot guarantee it. I am sorry that you were disappointed that the pool was closed. As this is complimentary to guests we do not reduce the rate for their stay. Thank you for your constructive feedback. Rest assured it has been taken seriously and acted upon. Regards Moira GM

"Great building but forget the spa"

Peter B, Brighton, United Kingdom 30/07/2021

We stayed for 2 nights with the intention of spending time at the spa. My wife e-mailed the spa on two occasions well in advance to book this and they never acknowledged the e-mails, nor reply. On arriving at the hotel reception we were told the spa was fully booked til mid September. They should at least be courteous enough to reply or update their website/remove the spa e-mail. The hotel itself is lovely and the 1530 restaurant provides great food. The grounds are well kept. The only issue we had with the room (room 1) was a loo that continually had water running into the cistern. This was reported soon after arrival, but wasn't addressed. Just had to keep the bathroom door closed at night to avoid being disturbed. We'd consider staying again if we could ensure spa treatments.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry you were unable to get spa treatments during your stay and no one responded to you. The spa team are not manning the phones currently as they are so busy and the Reception team are dealing with the bookings. I am pleased you enjoyed the food and hotel. I am sorry the issue with the toilet was not address during your stay. It needed a part which we needed to order. I do hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Seckford on another occasion. Regards Moira GM

We chose stay at Seckford Hall to celebrate my 48th Birthday. The 2 deciding factors were the history and character of the hotel (we love old and quaint) and the fact that it had a swimming pool (mainly for my 2 teenage boys). When we arrived the outside building and grounds were stunning so we were excited. We were checked in swiftly by very friendly staff and were informed in a passing comment during a quick guide of the hotel that the pool was out of use, no explanation or apology given -disappointment No. 1. We should have been informed of this before arrival. Disappointment No. 2 came when we entered the room, my husband had arranged for flowers, balloons, a birthday cake made by the local bakery and a bottle of prosecco. The flowers were beautiful but there was a half inflated helium balloon, a Marks and Spencers boxed cake and no prosecco at all. The rooms were on the small side but comfortable, we were expecting old and tired so were not too fussed about the cracked and crumbling ceiling plaster in the bathroom but the dust and cobwebs in the bedroom were unpleasant (especially around the windows). The rooms were oppressively hot so the first thing we did was open the windows only to be covered in cobwebs. The up side of Seckford Hall is the charming character, the friendly staff and the very good food. Breakfast was great, fresh and well presented buffet and the cooked breakfast was delicious. We also ate in the hotel restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed our meal, the menu had a great variety and was reasonably priced. Our 2 night stay was average, but with a little more attention to detail it could have been great which is a little disappointing.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you were disappointed with the pool being closed. It has a hairline crack and is leaking into the foundations. You should have received an email 7 days and 1 day prior to your arrival confirming your booking with details of this. I am sorry your husband's gift was not quite up to scratch. I will investigate this and address the issues with the room with our Head Housekeeper as this is not our usual standard. I am pleased that you enjoyed the food and found the team friendly. Rest assured your concerns have been taken seriously and acted upon. Regards Moira GM

"Not nut-allergy or vegan friendly!"

3
User 27/07/2021

We went to Seckford Hall for an afternoon tea yesterday and upon arrival I was taken aback by how beautiful it was (inside and out!). It was lovely, clean and set a good tone for the afternoon. We had a few members in our party with specific dietary requirements (some veggie, some vegan, and some with severe nut allergy as well as intolerances for tomatoes/peppers) - this is all to say, we're not the easiest party to cater for! I was really impressed when the waiter checked twice to confirm the allergies and dietary requirements before putting the order through. (Though slightly unnerved because they had all the requirements when we booked, so we'd have expected them to be prepared for the different requirements before our arrival). When the afternoon tea came, it looked AMAZING. Honestly, so good. And those of us who had the standard tea had no complaints whatsoever. As one of the vegans, I asked the waiter to double check that a couple of the cakes on my tea were vegan, as they looked really 'normal' and I wanted to be sure. I also asked, on behalf of my mum, if there were definitely no nuts either. They came back and said there were no nuts and yes, everything was vegan. It was all going well until my mum took a bite of the vegan carrot cake and immediately said 'I think there's walnuts in this'. I had a bite of mine and agreed there were definitely walnuts in it. We called a waiter to take a look and he insisted there weren't nuts. We asked him to check with the chef and he came back and said it was just carrot. I picked up a piece of walnut and showed it to him! The waiters were very slow in dealing with the problem, considering my mum's severe allergies can be (and have been in the past) life threatening. Fortunately, walnuts aren't as severe as other nuts for her, so she had to take an antihistamine and didn't feel great, but didn't require any further medical attention. After several attempts to get a clear answer on the carrot cake, we were informed that we might have accidentally been given the non-vegan carrot cake. (The one that I specifically checked was vegan before we ate). This could also mean that we were fed non-vegan food, as well as nuts. My mum asked to speak to a manager, who insisted that all of the carrot cake is vegan, whether it's served as standard or specifically to vegans. Which is fine if that's the case, but she also insisted there were no nuts in it! So not only was there poor communication and understanding of the ingredients in the food we were being served, which could have caused fatal allergic reaction, I now no longer trust that the food I ate was actually vegan. The food was delicious and I would love to have returned, but I don't think I can trust that I will get what I've asked for, which is a real shame.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review

"Sad and disappointing"

We prebooked, paid a deposit and sat in an empty dining room. Mainly ignored due to a wedding party in the grounds. We had to nag for service. The food was lukewarm. The chicken Kiev was minus the Kiev and was dry. On arrival at the table we each received a different menu including breakfast. We had to nag for the bill which finally came without the deposit being deducted. It was an absolute shambles. We wrote a letter of complaint after our visit on 23rd June 2021. We did not even receive the courtesy of a reply. I used to love Seckford Hall. How the mighty have fallen.

Our second visit to Seckford to celebrate our Anniversary and Birthdays (post covid!). The Hotel contacted us early this year to say that they were doing overnight stay with dinner and breakfast for £199. We upgraded to a Deluxe for a further £20. We stayed in the courtyard in room 33. The suite was beautiful and we were also treated to a card and bottle of Prosecco. We had relaxing drinks in the main hotel courtyard in the afternoon which was lovely. We both chose prawns and then a roast followed by ice cream and sticky toffee pudding for dinner. Both dinner and breakfast were well presented and filling. All staff were polite and attentive. We both had an amazing and most importantly relaxed night away and will be returning again soon. Thank you to all Staff and Seckford Hall for making our stay amazing.

"What a let down!"

jo_999000, London, United Kingdom 23/07/2021

If you've ever stayed in a 4 star country house hotel don't bother staying here!! You will be disappointed. Firstly the positives - the building and grounds themselves are lovely and overall well maintained with the exception of a pool which seems to have been broken for some time! Unfortunately after this we only have negatives. Room booked via booking.com not at all what we expected - king size superior - with no wardrobe, - hanging rail only which was over the tea/coffee tray so not ideal!!! No space for cases (had to pile them on top of the chair) and no where in bathroom to even hang a towel. Shower had no hot water. The staff are inattentive - saw many tables waiting for service and having to keep going into bar to ask for garden drinks. Lack of any local drinks - this is Suffolk cider/beer county and only had Magners or Boddingtons!! No cocktails - asked for g&t came with no garnish whatsoever . Huge lack of attention to detail. Complained about room when arrived was told I was v lucky and that it was a lovely room by the GM!! Such poor customer service and listening skills. Saw many people complaining upon check-out. Went into breakfast no windows or doors opened in the restaurant in a COVID world! - the room was completely stuffy as it was a v hot day. Worth saying after having to make a fuss was offered an alternative room which we declined as this was halfway through a two night trip and not worth the faff but did receive money off. All in all way below expectations

A beautiful country house hotel with a real wow factor as we drove up. We had a lovely modern suite in a newer block overlooking a courtyard. The bedroom had a four poster canopy and was very comfortable and the bathroom was enormous with a spa bath. We ate tea inside having retreated from a too sunny garden. This was the only real disappointment - no sunshades/ umbrellas at all! The outdoor furniture was also a bit tired. Apart from that I couldn't fault it. Delicious tea and also a very nice dinner which we somehow made room for. Breakfast was also very enjoyable with a buffet of pastries, juice, cereal, fruit etc. and also a very good cooked selection to order off a menu. . The staff were so friendly and helpful and really made the atmosphere relaxing and we had a perfect weekend stay.

This beautiful historic house, on arrival, is very impressive. You certainly feel a sense of history about the place. It has the potential to be an outstanding hotel. It has so much to admire and praise. Unfortunately, it's a whisker away from excellent. We were 'upgraded' to one of the cottages which, despite being disappointed that we weren't staying in the older part of the hotel, provided a good amount of extra space. Unfortunately, the cottage had a number of flaws. A settee which doubled as an extra bed was extremely uncomfortable to sit on and we had limited space in an old wardrobe for our clothes. The only mirror near a plug didn't offer suitable seating. If you sat on one of the stools provided elsewhere the seat was too low to see into the glass. There was a perfect place for a mirror, above a dressing table, but it hadn't been considered as an appropriate and guest friendly option. The chest of draws was impossible to open and despite raising this concern with the management nothing was done about it. The rooms don't have fridges so guests have to go to the bar for ice. Not what one would expect from a good hotel. The grounds are a potential delight. It just needs more gardening expertise to add colour to drab flower beds. What a stunning setting could be created in the grounds. It could be a gardener's paradise! Seating in the gardens is limited to wrought iron seats, which are fine for afternoon tea, but offer little comfort for readers or folk who want to relax and sleep away an afternoon. The staff work hard! But, they are often rushed and appear anxious and seem to be ill informed about what's happening in the hotel. Generally the service is fine but it was only on the last day, after a seven night stay, that the breakfast waitress remembered our usual breakfast order. There isn't a front of house. A person who appears to ease concerns and projects the ethos of the hotel. It would be more conducive to guests if the 'font of house' did not spend so much time on their computers? Surely this type of work, in a top hotel, is completed behind closed doors? The highlight of the hotel is, without doubt, the food. The breakfasts are excellent and the dinner menu offers some of the best meals we've tasted in years. Unfortunately, the food is served in a dining room trapped between eras. The original wall paneling is lovely but the floor is a horrid plastic type of dark brown flooring. Tables sometimes come with table clothes and others times don't. The window fabrics are lack luster and the lighting is appalling. Someone needs to add colour and richness to the décor to compliment the exquisite food. As suggested, it's a whisker away from excellent! We hope with some imagination and care it lives up to the potential it undoubtedly has.

Having a 1 year old son can make going away abit tricky but we had a lovely 5 days staying at Seckford Hall. We stayed in one of the suites and there was plenty of room for our son to run around and not disturb the other guests. Breakfast was good and we had the package with dinner. The food was excellent - they change the menu each nighht which was good! It was obvious that all the staff work very hard at Seckford Hall and even though our room couldnt be serviced due to Covid it was easy to get any toilettries etc we needed. We would highly recommend this hotel- it is a shame the spa and pool are closed but hopefully they can fix it soon but overall a great hotel which is very good value of money and now the restrictions are being lifted I would imagine it would be even better!

I have to admit we had read previous reviews and weren't sure what this hotel would be like but had a fantastic stay. The room was newly painted with new blinds etc and the bed very comfy. The bathroom was very modern too The staff were all lovely, couldn't do enough to help and keen to ensure we enjoyed our stay The hotel is steeped in history which the staff are keen to share. We only had breakfast at the hotel which was great with lots of choice Thank you to all the staff for your hard work!

"Afternoon Tea , shop bought cakes"

2
User 06/07/2021

Other reviewers here must have visited for afternoon tea when the kitchen staff were working at full compliment because our tea consisted of shop bought scones and cakes, they were definitely out of a packet and not at all nice. The only highlight was the quarter portion of Scotch Egg and posset glass desert . Two tiny squashed triangle sandwiches instead of finger sandwiches, for tea,so that wasn't impressive. Never seen hundreds and thousands on adult cakes either, Tea was two tea bags in a small pot , no choice of loose leaf tea which would be the norm in a high end hotel, no extra tea offered and only hot water provided when asked for. Staff were inattentive and uninterested.

"Weekend away"

5
User 05/07/2021

My friend and I had a lovely relaxing weekend away. The staff were always pleasant and helpful. When we checked in they were able to offer us better rooms having heard me mention a shower and being aware the room only had a bath. They managed to squeeze us into cancellations for meals when others plans had changed and we had not been organised enough to book. I also thought it was very reasonable and unpretentious. I felt very much at home. Indeed my one constructive feedback would be to send the bar staff on a course and offer cocktails and a higher quality of wine for those looking for an even more indulgent experience.

"Expensive and budget"

2
User 04/07/2021

A poor stay for a lot of money. Where to begin? The room (standard double) was indeed standard (but there is standard and then there is standard depending on the price paid....there's £50 premier inn standard and then there's Seckford Hall standard £200). The room was hot, a bit claustrophobic, no air con. The shower pressure was very poor so much so I tried to revert to a bath.....not likely, there wasn't enough water to fill it...unless I left it an hour whilst it dribbled in? The wifi was weak and therefore Netflix/Prime wouldn't work. So it was just normal tv channels. There was minimal toiletries and no fresh milk or juice, no fridge. Think budget hotel. Dinner was a-ok. Pleasant starter and main but AWFUL dessert! Cheesecake was ‘old' stale. Food we felt had all been pre cooked and then re-heated barring the cheesecake which I'm sure was either a) made a good few days earlier or b) shop bought. Nasty. Staff were very friendly and attentive. The grounds/house beautiful but tired and again in need of some tlc. All in all this wasn't the best experience, we had far higher expectations of Seckford Hall. In our opinion this is a budget hotel set in beautiful grounds, not worth the £300+ a night for dinner bed and breakfast. What a shame.

"No apology.. Disappointed."

whurr_11, Norwich, United Kingdom 01/07/2021

We stayed at this hotel 2 weeks ago . I have emailed them but to date have had no reply. We were told the room we had booked had been given to other guests. We had booked the feature room with four poster bed and garden outlook . We were given what was supposed to be an upgraded room which was in the courtyard. This was dark and gloomy with no outlook. I said I wanted to be in the Hall with garden views. I was told there was only a standard room available. Which we excepted. We were offered no apology or explanation and I had to ask if we would receive compensation. I was told I'd pay the the standard room rate. We were shown to the longe for pre dinner drinks. Left with menus . No one came to take our order after 20mins my husband had to return to the bar to give our order. When they were brought to us he had brought me the wrong drink. I accepted this as by now it was time for us to go to the restaurant. The Hall and gardens are beautiful and we enjoyed a lovely evening meal and breakfast. Such a shame this review couldn't have been more positive.

Just back from a 2 night much needed break and catch up with my husband and friend of 40 years. The grounds and building are stunning. Plenty of parking space too. We spent much of the time outside in the beautiful gardens. We didn't use the spa though. There are a few areas of the hotel that have suffered some damage but here's the thing - it is an old building - you expect signs of wear and tear and for those that are moaning about it, get a grip. The dining area and bar area were cosy and well presented which seems to indicate that there is a programme of redecorating going on. We had a 4 poster and the furniture was sympathetic and in keeping with the ambience of the room - not brand new, or modern which would have not been fitting. My friend had a room over the other side of the building facing us which was very large and also well equipped. Both rooms are very warm even with the windows open - but there are fans provided. Breakfast, dinner and afternoon tea was superb. The staff very accommodating throughout the stay, we had dinner booked but were starving so they made room for us in the area facing the garden. Nothing too much trouble. We had afternoon tea which they had set up inside because of the drizzle earlier in the day, which they moved outside for us. Friendly, pleasant and approachable. We left one phone on charge in the room, while we ate breakfast on the day of departure which the house keeper brought down to us thinking we had left it in error - so honest too. Only criticism would be the guests (including us once or twice) let the room doors bang. Thank you for a fabulous and relaxing stay. Staff a credit to the hotel and made our stay welcoming and enjoyable.

"Nice hotel, restaurant not up to standard"

User 28/06/2021

A lovely, beautiful hotel but it little dated abs in need of TLC. However for a 4 star hotel the food wasn't great and the wine menu appalling. Wine wasn't nice and ruined the experience of a wine and dine deal.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the restaurant and wine list. The Head Chef has recently updated the menu and we are in the process of updating the wine list. Thank you for your constructive feedback. Regards Moira GM

"Very disappointing"

Fabulous looking hotel and grounds. Really inattentive staff and no room service or cleaning or spa but still full price. Restaurant service so bad we canceled our last dinner and got food and drink from Tesco's near by.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry you were disappointed with your stay. As explained the spa was open for treatments, the sauna, steam room and gym were available to use; however, the pool was closed due to health and safety concerns as it has a hairline crack, As the use of the facilities are complimentary to our hotel guests and due to social distancing regulations, you would have only been allocated a half hour slot for the pool to enable all guests to make use of it had it been open. I am sorry you found the restaurant service lacking and I will address this with the team. Thank you for your feedback. Rest assured your comments have been taken most seriously and acted upon. "Excellent afternoon tea!"

Rosie W, Basingstoke, United Kingdom 16/06/2021

Excellent afternoon tea! The savoury selection was delicious, especially the scotch eggs! The scones were great, generous amount of butter, cream and jam. Although the cheese scone tasted a bit sweet, wondered if they had mixed the batches up, still tasted good though! The cakes were delicious, many different flavours and the lemon posset was very refreshing. Good amount of tea and coffee as well. Service was very good, went out of their way to move our table into the shade and were very friendly. The atmosphere outside in the courtyard was lovely and the gardens were nice for a walk around.

"accommodation a huge disapointment"

AlyCol67, Chelmsford, United Kingdom 15/06/2021

Booked a standard double room, disapointing to say the least! Bed not a full size double, small cramped room in the attik on the second floor in desparate need of some TLC! Grubby carpet, dated, stained plastic bath, no shower screen. Tatty, furniture. No view apart from the satelite dish on the roof. Slight garden view from bathroom window. Very very low ceiling. Not pleased. On the plus side, good breakfast! Won't recommend or return

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you were disappointed with your room. As the hotel was fully booked, we were unable to move your room and reduced your rate in recognition of your disappointment. All of our rooms have been recently painted and carpets have been cleaned. The room and furniture are in a style in keeping with the 16th century building. I am pleased that you enjoyed your breakfast. Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to hear that you would not return. Regards Moira GM

"Beautiful venue"

We enjoyed two nights at Seckford Hall. We used it as a base to visit Woodbridge, Sutton Hoo, Aldeburgh and, Orford and Southwold. It is a very good base to explore these areas of Suffolk. We were delighted with the house. It is beautiful and relaxed. The gardens are lovely and it is a pleasure to sit outside for a drink before or after dinner. The restaurant menu is limited, completely understandable at this time. We enjoyed our meals and breakfast very much. We stayed in the more modern rooms in the converted stables/barns. We had a comfortable room and small living room and a little area outside with table and chairs. Other guests were friendly and pleasant to chat too. We'd like to mention Alexander who worked in the Dining Room who was very pleasant and attentive.

"No happy 70th"

User 13/06/2021

We were celebrating a 70th birthday lunch. 5 adults and only 1 meal was good. 4 of us had rack of lamb, it was TOUGH and borderline raw. The desserts were ok though. Overall very expensive and we all felt the menu was very limited. Very uninspiring. We have an 80th coming up and won't be returning.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review

We had booked a couple of nights to take in our wedding anniversary hoping to explore the Suffolk countryside and enjoy some good food and the spa. Four days before out trip we received an email regarding the pool not being open because of a crack. We considered cancelling and reluctantly decided that we would still go. The hotel main building looked stunning - very grand Tudor building and the grounds were lovely. We were in the courtyard but tucked around the back. It was quite dark in the room, but very spacious with a separate lounge and large bedroom with en-suite, immediately outside was a small table and two white painted chairs - however these were covered in green algae - I wiped these off with disinfectant wipes as much as I could so that we could use them (we both felt that this attention to detail was lacking and easily resolved in minutes with a pressure washer). There was spiders webs everywhere on the outside doors and windows and window frames - not just something that had happened overnight - again a quick wipe with a rag could have easily removed and made to look less shabby. There was no capsules for the coffee machine - I had to go to reception to request these. We found a pair of pink jeans in the cupboard which had been left by a previous guest, a clump of red hair in the lounge by the large mirror both occurrences pointed to us that who ever was responsible for cleaning and room turnaround was not doing their job. Due to COVID we made our own bed etc as no one was allowed to come into the room. The WiFi did not work sufficiently in the bedroom for us to even get the bbc news on our iPads - just one bit showing in the signal. All these Small things do not cost a lot of money to rectify and cannot be truthfully blamed on COVID. The food was very good and we enjoyed both evening meals and breakfasts and the staff were friendly and pleasant. However we appear to have been charged for desserts on the 2nd evening when we had actually paid for Bed Breakfast and Evening meal which we assumed included all food during the evening meal! - we only realised this after we left so sadly could did not challenge it. We feel that corners are being cut maybe to make up for the inevitable losses over the last year - which is a shame as discerning customers do notice these things. We like enjoying nice experiences and would only return and recommend if we find that - we are actually not picky people just a normal couple looking to celebrate events in our life.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry you some issues with your room and I have addressed these with the Head Housekeeper. With regards your dinner, bed & breakfast rate, it includes an allowance of £32 per person and if the cost of your meal goes over this amount , the difference automatically charges to your room which is what happened in your case on the second evening. Thank you for your constructive feedback. Rest assured your concerns have been taken seriously and acted upon. Regards Moira GM

"June trip to Seckford"

4
stevenagered, Norfolk, United Kingdom 10/06/2021

The hotel is a beautiful Elizabethan Manor House and the grounds are lovely. Mind you the lake could do with a bit of a clean as it has a massive amount of weed. Our room had a balcony which was lovely for sitting out in the Sun and in the evening. Two members of staff we thought went the extra mile were Sharon on reception & Mollie who served breakfast in the mornings & was doing evening service yesterday 9th June (apparently there are three Mollies) Although our room could not be cleaned because of COVID we did see housekeeping working in the public areas and everything was extremely clean. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and the majority of staff were extremely pleasant. The Downsides: it's a drive away from everywhere. The menu was very limited for both the restaurant & lounge this could have been COVID but the breakfasts and afternoon teas were not so. We only ate dinner one evening & drove into town for the rest of our time. One last note: Ana please realise that people are out of their comfort zone in a new place especially as we are just coming out of Lockdown so please be a little less shrill & condescending & a little kinder.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are pleased you enjoyed your stay and will pass your compliments on to Sharon & Mollie. I hope we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to Seckford in the near future. Regards Moira GM

Stayed for two nights was informed day before spa and pool closed. On arrival party were split. One couple in the main hotel the other in the courtyard, supposedly an upgrade! Rooms were supposed to be superior but sadly lacking various things cobbled together. Dinner sadly not up to expectations and on mentioning wasn't taken seriously by staff. Breakfast great first morning but sadly items although ordered not arriving on second morning. No bread plates, what do you do with the toast? Second morning no hot water in main house no apology. Managerial staff sadly lacking in customer relations. Will not be staying again.

"Afternoon tea"

User 08/06/2021

Extremely hot day and seated in the middle of the lawn with no shade. Told the umbrellas had been stolen but not offered a shady table. Afternoon tea was ok but would prefer to be offered more savoury. Scones are far too big and had to ask for butter for cheese scone. Cakes were good but sat in full sun was not good for them either. Beautiful setting but attention to detail lacking

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that you were not offered a shady table. Unfortunately our tea garden gets the sun all day until late afternoon and when we are busy it means not all guests can be in the shade. We are investing in new umbrellas for the summer. Details of our afternoon tea menu are on our website and most guests find sandwiches, sausage roll, scotch egg & a smoked salmon pin wheel are enough savoury options with the addition of a cheese scone. Thank you for your constructive feedback. Regards Moira GM

No hot water, reception didn't apologise once, said boiler was broken and we would have to wait. No spa facilities due to health and safety as they need to repair the pool that has had a crack in for over 6 months. Poor quality breakfast.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am so sorry that the Receptionist did not apologise for the issue with the hot water. This is not acceptable and will be addressed. The crack in the swimming pool has only just been identified since we reopened as the pool has been closed since March 2020 due to covid restrictions. Thank you for your feedback. Recent visit for afternoon tea to celebrate friends birthday. Enjoyed lovely selection of sweet and savoury treats. Would have preferred more savoury choices but that's just my personal preference. We booked this hotel to enjoy the pool and spa, but it was temporarily closed and they failed to tell us. They forgot parts of our breakfast order every day, and they cancelled the daily servicing of the rooms “due to Covid”. So we had bins overflowing and not enough toilet roll, shower gel or towels.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to post this review. I am sorry that the pool and spa being closed for health & safety reasons impacted your stay. With regards your room not being serviced daily, this is part of our COVID 19 protocol that our team do not enter your room after you check in to keep both them and yourselves safe. This is a measure in place throughout hotels in UK, both independent & large international groups. As advised on check in , we were happy to provide you with more toiletries etc on request at Reception and any rubbish could be left outside and removed by the team. I am sorry the service at breakfast fell short of our usual standard of service. Thank you again for your feedback. Regards Moira GM

"Chrome and Glass, it's not!"

4
JTreborM, Cambridge, United Kingdom 27/05/2021

Firstly, if it's a boutique modern chrome and glass endowed hotel with high speed lifts to all floors that's your liking, then this is not the hotel for you. But if you want to immerse yourself in a Jacobean Mansion that oozes the ambience of that far off time in history then this place has it all. From staircase balustrades the size of tree trunks to oak panelled walls in the lounge this place will have you thinking that Queen Elizabeth 1st is about to arrive in her carriage to check in for a few nights stay. With Covid restrictions somewhat eased the staff managed their duties to perfection. The food was excellent, our first choice wine was not available (due probably to the hotel still getting its stock in order after being in lockdown for months) but a good alternative was offered. We stayed in the Jacobean House and the room mirrored the house's age. The furniture had historic signs of woodworm and all the doors and drawers were a sloppy fit. But then why wouldn't they be if they were hundreds of years old. I didn't expect an IKEA flatpack! A lovely olde worlde stay was had, complimented by friendly efficient staff which combined with excellent food made a for a superb break after being locked down for so long.

"Very Good"

User 24/05/2021

Stayed here three nights the day after it reopened following lockdown. Stunning building in a lovely setting yet with great access to explore Suffolk. All the staff were very helpful and friendly room was clean extremely comfortable and well maintained. The included breakfast was excellent in both choice and quality. The only reasons for not giving 5/5 is that the menu was limited although the two dinners we had there were very good, and I'm sure the small choice was partly due to uncertainty that hotel would be allowed to reopen and was both a sensible and prudent decision to start back slowly. Also the bar was struggling a bit as none of the draught beers were working so choice again was limited and some of the bottles of lager I chose instead were served at room temperature. But the property is clearly loved by its owners and the ongoing renovation work is only going to make this hotel better and better! All in all a fabulous stay and excellent value for money. Will definitely return hopefully later this year Thanks all involved At Seckford Hall.

"Spa still closed"

We've arrived and are very sad to find the spa is not open . It's a pity we weren't forewarned as I'd so looked forward to swimming again. In fact it's the main reason for coming here. In the future I'll check as it's our second visit that we've found the spa has been closed. Otherwise the hotel is looking grand , both rooms and gardens.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review

We booked a much needed one night stay at Seckford Hall- just me and my partner. Because of covid we could not use the pool or spa but still loved our stay and will certainly be back when all facilities are open. Beautiful building with loads of history and pretty grounds and worth driving into Woodbridge to visit the lovely old town center which we did. Rooms were fine however i think it would be nice to have a mini fridge in the rooms. Also could do with a deep clean on some spots where dust around lights and mirrors sat, but very pleased that they had a bin in the room which a lot of hotels don't have. Room was very warm at night so you need to open windows. Breakfast was lovely and service was great and really friendly. Dinner was also delicious- the sea bass was amazing! Super chef. I think they are coping well considering they had such few staff working because of covid and will be nice t come back when things are back to normal.

"Do not book here. Pictures on website give a false overview of the property."

1
800elliep, Suffolk, United Kingdom 19/12/2020

Absolutely diabolical. I booked to stay here and paid £130 for a ‘superior' double. I came up to my room to find I had twin headboards so I rang reception and asked if they had another superior DOUBLE room available - the next one I was shown was very small and dark so I said that's fine I'll stay in the one I'm in. Upon closer inspection, I find cracks in windows, paint peeling off the walls, make up marks on the walls, shabby furniture and water damage to the chairs - yuck! Certainly not what you would expect from the hotel judging from its website or from a hotel room costing £130. I then went down to reception and explained all this and was told ‘there were no other rooms available', I did not even get an apology or to be asked if I was okay or anything, so I asked to see the second room again. Upon moving my belongings into the second room, I discovered the bathroom stunk of smoke. I then decided to take matters into my own hands and go on the website and I found that there was other rooms available. For the third time I rang reception and said ‘I have seen you have other rooms available.' Instead of being offered a free upgrade to one of the other rooms on offer, I was downgraded to a regular double room and refunded the price (in 5 working days!). I have seriously never stayed anywhere like this and I will never return. In the double room I was finally in, the bedside tables were turned towards the bed so they could fit in, meaning that you could not use the drawers. Despite being a recently refurbished room, the plug sockets were shocking. However the room was a lot nicer than the superior!! Makes no sense!! Besides this, I was told that there was no room service...makes absolutely no sense to me considering the pandemic. It is such a shame because the building itself is beautiful but reception seem completely unable to deal with complaints regarding basic hygiene (or anything else for that matter after reading other reviews!!). I won't be returning that's for sure.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that you had issues with your room and Reception did not deal with it properly. Our Operations Manager will review this with the team as a result of your issues. Thank you for this constructive feedback. Regards Moira Banks GM

"Enchanting Tudor property, inferior service"

1
SHERMINE54, London, United Kingdom 05/11/2020

We stayed at this stunning property in October stayed for 3 days. The property itself is outstanding , historical dating back to the Tudor period. Since this was our first time to visit this place we got astray by car, asked for directions from reception, were sadly misled us a few times that we ended up going around in circles and wasted an hour driving trying to find the place after a long hectic drive from London. The property is historical from the Tudor period, low beamed ceiling, 4 poster bed, takes you back to Tudor era. However, the sofa was dilapidated, with faded material. Needs re-upholstering. The bathroom badly needs revamping. It dates back to the mid nineties..No shower cubicle....only a steep safety hazard high edged slippery bathtub with an obsolete fiddly tap that takes forever to function and mix water. The breakfast was very unhealthy with very little choices. The young blonde waitress who served our dinner was rather abrupt, had very little knowledge of what goes in the menu. Staff lack training. The male middle aged waiter who served breakfast was very polite and accommodating, breakfast was very basic, unhealthy, lacking in berries or superfoods which are supposed to be local produce from the local neighbourhood. All what was on the menu (in terms of fruit) were imported tasteless GMO sour inedible pineapples, watermelon and melon, processed dry cereals and a stodgy commercial English breakfast which did not taste organic, free range or fresh from the local farms. The food and beverage management should encourage the local farming community by resourcing their ingredients from them instead of buying whole sale from commercial suppliers. The dinner was disappointing too...the cooked salmon came across as frozen, stale and flaky (quite tasty though) despite the fact that the town is close to the seaside. They should invest in a more creative chef to live up to the grandiose image of this sophisticated property. Beautiful, breathtaking well manicured gardens and golf course. Lovely statues and historical fixtures. Hygiene standards are quite inferior and shocking. Housekeeping refused to clean our bedroom, change the sheets and towels all throughout our stay, using Covid19 as their flimsy excuse! This beggars belief! On the contrary, Covid19 should be a good reason to frequently clean and disinfect the bedrooms. This is against health the safety. We had to request fresh towels, the young male receptionist obliged, politely apologised stating that this was ‘management new Covid rules'. Such a shame because it's a stunning property with a lot of potentials. Would have loved to return but sadly the negative attitude left us with very little to be desired, in particular that we paid £280 a night on that weekend to be expected to make up our own bed and get fresh towels ourselves, using a dirty bathroom for a 48 hours stay. This is against hygiene, health and safety

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. Whilst I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay, I need to correct some of your "facts" which are wrong. Firstly, the housekeeping team did not refuse to clean your room, as part of our certification as a COVID 19 safe hotel (under government regulations) and our risk assessment which forms part of this, the team are not able to enter your room once you have checked in as you and your possessions may be carrying the virus. Likewise one of the housekeeping team may be carrying the virus so to keep both you and the team safe, they do not clean your room. This procedure is happening in hotels all over the country and is not just done at Seckford. On arrival, the Reception team would have explained this to you. Secondly, at breakfast our eggs are free range from a local farm and our sausages and bacon are also sourced from another local farm. We do utilise local berries when they are in season in the summer but these are out of season in October. The only berries currently available currently are imported from Spain. I hope that clarifies our position. Regards Moira Banks GM

"5 stars. Beautiful, Magical, Romantic Weekend."

Sarah W, Ipswich, United Kingdom 01/11/2020

An enjoyable quiet relaxing break away. The hotel is a truly beautiful place, tucked away in a quiet area of Suffolk. It's the most romantic and magical place we have ever stayed in and we feel lucky to have been able to stay here and experience it. Whether you stay here for a once in a life time night away, for a special occasion like a birthday, or a romantic weekend away - You have got to so youraelf a favour and do it at least once. You won't be disappointed. We certainly were not. The breakfast is amazing, all locally produced and cooked to perfection - and everybody is safely distanced. we felt reassured we were being looked after which feels so rare now in this pandemic. We stayed in one of the junior suites, with our own doors just outside of the main building. Super spacious, luxurious, clean and tidy, with both an upstairs and downstairs, and a really lovely spacious bath and shower. The bed was a super king size and one of the most comfortable beds we have stayed in. It was a peaceful and tranquil stay, and one I throughly recommend if you want a romantic, peaceful break away. The staff were helpful, and offered us reassurance in such strange times. Everything was clean and they had hand gel which must be used when entering the building as well as masks on. This however did not affect the atmosphere, and the beautiful setting of this wonderful 16th century house. If you want to treat a loved one, or you want a romantic break away, please do yourselves a favour and ignore the other local hotels and book yourself up!!... Whilst a little more expensive than other hotels in the area, it's a truly magical experience, in a beautiful hotel and one for all your bucket lists. It's a place which you will dream of for a long time afterwards. Sadly we couldn't use the pool facilities on our stay due to the covid restrictions, but the lovely room, beautiful house and the nicest cooked breakfast ever tasted by us more than made up for this. Please support these places when they reopen after the lockdown, as we can't afford to lose these beautiful places, and they will need your support more than ever. Thank you to the staff at Seckford Hall from us.

"Nice but not worth the price"

3
Perry65, London 01/11/2020

Seckford Hall is a beautiful Tudor country house with a great deal of potential charm. We arrived in the evening and the sight of the house lit up as you turn in through the gates is magnificent. The first clue that this isn't the premium hotel the cost of the stay suggests is the pitted and pot holed drive way badly in need to some repair. This analogy continues to the hotel itself where once grand ideas have been cheaply renovated in a ‘that'll do' kind of way that falls too short of the quality required. The bedrooms in the stable block where we stayed are good sized, adequately furnished. The bathrooms are old fashioned with dribbling showers and need updating. On request, the hotel was able rustle up some decent pillows to replace the lumpy, foam ones originally provided but could not do anything about the musty smell or the worn and holy duvet cover. Good, fluffy white tools but dressing gowns that had clearly seen better days which we had no desire to put on. The public rooms in the main house are comfortable but, with a little effort, could be luxurious. The restaurant is fairly soulless with bright lights killing most of the atmosphere. The food is simple but well cooked and tasty. Limited choice of budget wines but nothing special. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the organisation of the hotel is designed for the convenience of the management rather than the guests. Therefore only the ‘usual' kind of things are available and anything slightly out of the norm (such a cocktails, tomato juice, decent single malt whiskey, etc...) are not available. In summary, we had an enjoyable and relaxing weekend stay but the cost per night is between £50 and £75 too expensive for the rather mid-market quality on offer.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. You will be pleased to hear that we are currently repairing the drive which had some potholes due to the heavy rain throughout October and have asked our laundry company to address the issue of the dressing gowns. Regards Moira Banks GM

"Beautiful property but poor hospitality"

3
Navigate506550, Santorini, Greece 30/10/2020

The property itself is lovely. Historical reminiscent of Tudor times. The interior is made out of brown oak, low beamed ceilings, rustic and characteristic. Sadly the service is not up to the pomp of the Tudor era. We got lost on the way (since access to the property by car is quite tricky), we were misled few by the members is staff, we ended up turning around in circles several times since we were given the wrong directions in fact three times). The bedroom was grand with 4 poster bed. The bathroom needs upgrading. It dates back to mid 1990's. No shower cubicle. An uncomfortable safety hazard high edged bathtub with a high risk of slipping and breaking a bone. The shower is fiddly and complicated....rather obsolete. The food at the restaurant was mediocre. Menu is basic, bland and restricted, with poor choices. They need to invest in a good chef. Ingredients were not fresh. Salmon came from a frozen batch despite the fact that the town is close to the seaside. The waitresses were quite rude and unfriendly. They seem to be unaware of their surroundings, the do not even know what goes into the menu. Breakfast was basic and unhealthy with hardly any choices. They did not have berries on the menu despite the fact that berries are meant to be a local produce. The food and beverage managent chose to serve imported tasteless melons, water melons, pineapples and GMO tasteless imported fruits instead of using the neighboring farming resources to the best of their ability. We stayed there for 4 days. Housekeeping refused to clean our room throughout our stay using risk ‘COVID-19 as their excuse to avoid cleaning. Totally unacceptable. In fact COVID-19 should be a good reason for them to regularly disinfect and clean on regular basis rather than leave guest rooms to rot and gather dust! We had to beg them to bring us fresh towels. In fact by doing this they are encouraging spread of bugs in particular COVID-19 The golf course is very pretty beautifully manicured. Sadly the place lacked warmth and hospitality. It needs radical revamping, overhauling at all levels since it has great potentials. Provincial, insular attitude. Would love to return but sadly they made us feel most unwelcome and rejected, contrary to what five star hotels should be about.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review which is a duplicate of your friend or partner. Also the golf course, although similar in name, does not belong to Seckford. Regards Moira Banks GM

"Afternoon Tea"

Let me start by saying that we have supported local businesses during this half term by having afternoon tea at a different place each day. This was the 6th out of 7 and by far the worst service. We were seated in a side room, where only 1 other table was, so there was no atmosphere at all. Once the tea and food were bought to the table, that was it. We were not asked once whether we wanted any more tea or whether the food was ok. The waitress served the other table and when we tried to get her attention To ask for some more tea, she purposefully looked the other way and walked out. I advised the receptionist that the service had been less than acceptable, but she was not interested either. The food was just ok, nothing special and we would not return based on the lack of service. Very disappointed.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with the service at your afternoon tea. This is not our normal service and our Operations Manager will look into your experience and address your concerns with the team on duty. Regards Moira Banks GM

So what can I say about this place? Let's start by mentioning that my partner and I are not the easiest people to accommodate. As vegetarians, one of which is gluten intolerant so can't eat wheat, barley or rye and the other pregnant so has to avoid certain foods due to particular conditions, it's not too far fetched to say that we are a challenge to most menus. We try very hard to be understanding in regards to the food we can order in most places but at the same time, won't pay top prices for ‘after thought' dishes. So... we were stunned and delighted to be able to tell this hotel of our requirements and have them simply smile and say “not a problem”. But here's the thing, they meant it! It was not a problem for them to make us an amazing afternoon tea with gluten free cakes, sandwiches and scones. It was not a problem for them to create for us a dish within the menu that suited all our requirements that was perfectly cooked and tasted outstanding. It was not a problem for them to serve us two delicious vegetarian English breakfasts with gluten free toast and coffee with soy milk. They did this without the slightest hint of allowing us to feel as inconvenient as we know that we are. In fact, I'm unsure as to if they found us inconvenient at all? They were simply stunning and treated us with respect and grace for every element of our stay. We had dinner in the beautiful dining room then took dessert in the lounge while enjoying a delicious pint of alcohol free GhostShip before heading to our room for a snuggle. The room was clean, large and had an amazing view. The bed was soft and luxurious and a fabulous shower with soft towels was a real comfort. The grounds are stunning and I can't praise the staff enough for their hospitality during our stay. We will be returning again soon and can't wait.

Stayed at Seckford Hall for one of their Fantastic Friday deals. Well upon arrival what a beautiful building. Something out of Downtin Abbey We were received by a nice young man who made us very welcome and made ti feel safe in these covid times. He booked us un and for breakfast then showed us to our room. A very smooth check in. The room was a bonus it had a balcony overlooking the garden...it made our stay.We had pre dinner drinks on the terrace which was heated very nice. The tables in the restaurant were well spaced and we felt comfortable. The waitresses were effecient and professional and lovely bearing in mind that they have a difficult job in these difficult times. Funally the breakfast was the best iv ever had..everything was piping hot and cooked to perfection. The food at dinner was first class. Finally on checkout everything was as smooth as check in. Sharon the receptionist was warm and friendly and couldnt do enough for us. Thank you sharon. We have booked to go back in December and cant wait to see everyone. Hopefully xmas decorations will be up. A relaxing break well worth the visit....but dont tell everyone sssshhh. Xx .

Went for afternoon tea yesterday with my mother who had received a gift voucher last year for her 90th birthday. Seckford Hall had kindly extended the date as we had missed this due to the pandemic. The tea was lovely with great service and we felt very safe. We were really impressed with the quality of the food. Far too much for us but we were given little boxes to take the cakes home. All delicious.

Plus points: Stunning Tudor building complete with wood panelling & exquisite carving on many doors & furniture to match, a pleasant if rather small room with a balcony to sit for our afternoon cuppa, pleasant gardens & lake, friendly staff including very hands-on General Manager Moira & Receptionist Anna. Minus points : the food was expensive for what it was & service was rather slow so we had dinner elsewhere for 2 of our 4 evenings. We knew from the website that the spa & pool would be closed, but were puzzled by some of the other Covid precautions. Our room wasn't seviced by housekeeping throughout our stay (to protect us from them? or them from us?) This meant we had to queue up outside reception to get supplies of tea, coffee, loo-rolls, shampoo etc each day, & make our own bed. Our bin wasn't emptied in the 4 days (not very hygienic!) Having just returned from a week in Greece (Santorini) where our room was meticulously serviced daily & where in spite of welcoming guests from many countries there have been few if any cases of Covid, we wonder if the reason for cutting down on housekeeping is more for financial reasons than Covid?

"Superb stay but requires improvement with catering"

User 21/10/2020

Fabulous stay in a beautiful setting. So looked forward to this break having worked solidly since March and delighted when upgraded on arrival. Wow, gorgeous room and really made our stay special. Hotel is clean, very comfortable and taking covid measures properly. Unfortunately the spa was shut which we didn't know at time of booking. Plenty to do nearby though so not a huge issue, just would have been nice to use. Unfortunately what let it down a little and reason for not giving 5 is the lack of specific dietary catering. Having checked ahead before our stay re catering for coeliacs we were told it was not an issue. What they didn't say is you will be able to eat what is naturally gluten free on the menu and we don't actually specifically cater for you. So you can have breakfast minus the sausage, you can have burger minus the bun, you can have pudding minus the shortbread etc etc. Same price but missing bits off, which is not putting in an effort, it is having to fit in with the chef. After day 1 we were told this would be better the following day with new menu, however same menu bar one change and again no change. There was a lovely grilled haddock dish but I was told I could have it minus the sauce! After persuasion it was made with a different simple sauce, but its not nice being made to feel so awkward every time you sit down to eat. Having said all that, they do offer a gluten free afternoon tea and have made scones and cakes etc only you can see for yourself from the pictures, the scone was impossible to eat without a spoon as it fell apart. Think all us coeliacs know what they missed out when making that! Really appreciate that at that time though I wasnt made to feel different or awkward. This hasnt put us off going again, it's a lovely place to stay, great area to explore, lovely and quiet hotel and feels special. Reception staff especially on arrival very welcoming. Please as others have said do check your bill though as we were charged £60 for breakfast but had already paid for this up front. Thanks for the tip other reviewers.

Thank you for your review. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay. I will pass on your constructive feedback regarding the gluten free options and our menu to the Head Chef. I hope it won't be long before we have the opportunity to welcome you back to Seckford. Regards Moira Banks GM

"Afternoon tea disappointment"

ippydippy, Ipswich, United Kingdom 10/10/2020

We have had afternoon tea here on several occasions and have always felt they were ‘posh' with a lovely selection of food with attentive waiters/waitresses. Today we were shown to our table but before we had a chance to get to it the waitress quickly asked us what we'd like to drink then gabbled quickly asking if we had any dietary needs. It would have been nice to have let us at least sit down first. Tea came out quickly followed by our food. I know they vary the menu from previous visits we've been on but it just didn't have that ‘wow' factor this time. No sausage roll which has always been delicious also no pinwheel sandwich which was different to other afternoon teas instead there were average triangle sandwiches to fill the plate. One scone instead of two. No check back asking if everything was ok and did we want more tea. We had to try get someone's attention to get more. Then that was it we were left to it. Very average visit this time.

We are positive people and look for the brighter side in these somewhat dark times. We are returning visitors here, but are so disappointed at what we found. It was not clear that the pool is closed, yes we knew the spa treatments were understandably shut, and the gym, but it looks like the pool is still open from their website, it's part of what you pay for here. The food is very over priced, expect to pay £28 for a steak, no its nothing special. On the positive, the room was a luxury suite and spacious but I'm sorry look at the photos which are of the shower and the stained bed headboard which we didn't see when we arrived. We will never return.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry that you were disappointed that the pool and spa were closed. We are unable to open safely within the regulations set by the government. The use of the pool & spa facilities is complimentary for hotel guests. I am sorry to hear that you won't return and found the food overpriced. Thank you for your constructive feed back. "The filthiest hotel I've ever stayed in! Do not fall for the grand looking facade"

1
GaryG555, London, United Kingdom 06/10/2020

The filthiest hotel I've ever stayed in! Do not fall for the grand looking facade and the grounds it's a totally different experience once you're through the door. I think my photos speak for themselves. However if you have the time here's our experience when we visited Seckford Hall towards the end of Sept 2020... We had booked for 2 nights. The first room didn't have a proper shower just a shower head attached to the bath which you had to hold, the room was disgusting. Dead Insects trapped in the light fixtures, stained carpets, scratches and marks all over the walls and doors. The room was also extremely tired looking in general. I complained and was told that these  rooms hadn't been refurbished yet due to COVID. We were offered another room which also hadn't been refurbished but did have a proper shower. This room was as filthy as the last one but it did have a shower. I explained I wasn't happy but had no other choice. We'd arrived from London by train and it was too difficult to go home that night. If we had drove I would have left that afternoon. We wasted the first evening of our holiday sitting in a pub trying to find a different place to stay. When we got back to the room our bedding was dirty! We had to go back down and wait at the bar whilst the sheets were changed. In the morning we were offered an 'upgrade'. This room was a bit better than the other 2 but was still grimey and wasn't up to a '4 star' standard by any means. We had booked a week in Aldeburgh after our stay here and our Airbnb host allowed us to come a day early. We explained this to Seckford Hall and they gave us a full refund. We'd never been happier to leave a hotel in our lives. I would like to thank Ana who worked at Seckford Hall. She managed to make all of this bearable and her professionalism is wasted in such a slummy hotel. The rest of the staff seemed stressed and a bit disorganised. We feel that Seckford Hall intentionally misled us as none of the rooms we stayed in are shown on their site when we booked. We definitely wouldn't have booked if they were. We never did get to see these refurbished rooms so I'm going to assume very few exist. Regardless of the tired decor, a hotel room no matter what rating should never be dirty and definitely not as filthy as the ones we stayed in. Although we got a full refund we're still very dissatisfied as this was our only holiday this year and the first 2 days were wasted, I hope Seckford Hall update their site to fairly represent the rooms that are available and stop misleading potential guests. They also need to address their dire hygiene standards. We cancelled our meal at the hotel the night we stayed as we decided if the rooms were this dirty how bad must the kitchen be. So I can't comment on the food. However we did have a complimentary drink at the bar whilst our stained sheets were changed. Considering the local area boasts so many breweries and even a few vineyards. The drinks menu was offering up Bud Light, Stella and Boddingtons and not one English wine. Our taxi driver told us that the hotel is no longer independently owned and is now run by Best Western this may explain the chain hotel style menu but I'm at a loss as to how it can be so run down and dirty.

"Disappointing room, rooms in need of urgent upgrade, decoration etc"

tinahW4222BE, Bristol, United Kingdom 23/09/2020

The room we were given has wallpaper completely coming away from the wall, The room is tired, chipped paint etc, I showed a picture of this and was offered an alternative room, also in need of decoration, when I fed back to reception, I was told that yes rooms were in need of updating and decorating, for these prices, it's completely unreasonable and a disappointment. We were only told on arrival that the spa was closed due to covid, as the charges are in light of a spa, this was another disappointment. We had visited a hotel with a spa, prior to this, they managed it very well with covid measures, seems like this is too much effort

"Disappointing afternoon tea"

1
User 20/09/2020

I went to Seckford Hall yesterday for afternoon tea. I have an intolerance to cows milk and therefore ordered a dairy free version which I was so disappointed with. I have to say the sandwiches were nice but the cakes were just awful. They had the consistency of cardboard and no taste. I also had some sort of chocolate cake which was just disgusting and had an after taste of fairy liquid. This is the second time I have been for afternoon tea and the first time didn't blow me away, but I was so disappointed with this time. I couldn't eat any of my cakes apart from the macaroon which I do have to say was delicious. From my experience, I think it's fair to say they are not geared up for food intolerances. It's not difficult to make dairy free cakes, all you need to do is substitute the butter for a plant alternative. I don't know what Seckford Hall had done to my cakes!! Sadly very disappointed.

The Good: The service and food in the restaurant was good. The room booked for the night was spacious. Lovely building and surroundings. The Bad: For the price of the room I paid, we expected the shower to work in the bathroom, it didn't. That is a major oversight and not something a guest should ever experience. I appreciate the empathy from management, though at the end of the day I am paying for a room and expect a shower to work and no offer of a concession on the bill because of that is very poor. The waiting service in the garden before dinner was generally quite slow and frustrating . The coffee in the morning at breakfast was barely warm. Would I recommend this hotel to a friend? No, for the amount I paid for the room I expected a lot more.

This is such a wonderful place! Both my husband and I went for a well deserved break , our first for many months. I had a leg injury and was a bit impaired with how I could get around . We ended up upgrading to room 39 which was really almost an apartment! Really comfortable and very clean . Lots of room! The food was great for both dinner and breakfast What really put this place above many others was the fabulous staff. Sharon on reception shone out as so very helpful and looked after us so well. She was the one who found us the upgrade to the room , knowing that I'd benefit from the huge balcony !! Anna too with her knowledge of the very interesting history of this incredible place We will be back for sure!!

Arrival for Afternoon Tea ,it was soon apparent that the receptionist was very rude which ruined our afternoon.Really we should of just walked back out the hotel after being spoken to so rude by the receptionist. The afternoon Tea itself was very bland with mainly cheese sandwiches and one scone per person and every cake much the same, tasteless sponges . So disappointed as was far more enjoyable in previous visits. Will now have to look elsewhere in the future to visit.

"Worth Staying, But Could Do Better"

3
RockyJohnnyB, Saffron Walden, United Kingdom 05/09/2020

Seckford Hall is a grand looking medium sized hotel just off the A12 near Woodbridge. We visited Seckford during the pandemic, and so the spa was shut and special measures were in place. On the whole they seemed to be dealing with social distancing and hygiene measures pretty well so no complaints on that front. There are rooms in the main hotel and in the neighbouring outbuildings. I understand that the room we got allocated was the bridal suite - a master bedroom, living room and second bedroom that the kids stayed in, plus an en-suite bathroom (with jacuzzi and TV!) and separate loo. I'm not sure what that would normally cost but we got a very good deal on it. Very comfortable, very pleased. Staff were very friendly and helpful. But - and here is the reason for a 3 rather than 4 star review - service at breakfast was poor. The lady who served us repeatedly got our order wrong (in both days we were there), and simply said that she had only recently come back as if that was a reason not to listen properly or fix problems as they occurred. The food itself was good Would absolutely stay again though

"Not what it could be"

battersea_parkN, London, United Kingdom 05/09/2020

The building, grounds and location are beautiful. Many people staying were there to play golf at the adjacent golf course. We stayed in a courtyard room, which was fine. The interior of both the hotel and our room were unimaginative, slightly down at heel, and at odds with the character of the building itself. The restaurant completely lacks atmosphere and the interior would be a better fit for a budget business chain. The service staff, although well meaning and pleasant, seemed to be poorly trained and lacked pace and professionalism. The restaurant menu was disappointing. It had no sense of season or place or of the chef having a style or point of view. Well executed standards with good ingredients can be a good thing, but it was hard to find any enthusiasm for an offer quite so dull. It left me wondering if this was a case of a management team holding back a kitchen team that could do much more. And if you like good coffee, go elsewhere! We ate at the hotel the first night and after that went to restaurants in Orford and Aldeburgh which were fantastic. We loved visiting the area and will definitely be going back to explore more of Suffolk. We won't be going back to Seckford Hall unless there is a change of management. It could really be so much more than it is. It's only the beautiful building and grounds that save it from being an utterly dull and amateur venture.

"Not what I expected"

User 29/08/2020

My husband and I booked a break away for the night. It wasn't for a special occasion but was a nice treat for us as we don't get much time away from the children. We were so looking forward to it but we were very disappointed. When I booked the room I was not aware the spa facilities will not open when trying to book it online I couldn't get any appointments. Set my code the the team at Seckford Hall I didn't get an answer so I left a voicemail message asking for someone to call me back which they didn't 2 days later I called again and was informed by the receptionist that Spa was not open. He did tell me that it was advertised on line but this is something I didn't see at first glance. We were disappointed because this is something that we had hoped to do. Receptionist then asked if we would like to book a table for an evening meal I then explain to her that I had looked online to book a table there were wasn't any available she explained to me that all tables are reserved for residence in the evening this also wasn't well advertised online so we booked a table in a local restaurant. On arriving to the hotel we made our way to reception and were left standing for for at least 5 minutes before someone approached us and checked us in we were given room 31 which we were explained was in the courtyard. On arriving to a room I was a little disappointed as pictures on the website so fantastic rooms. On first glance our room left clean and tidy but once entering the bathroom all taps had water marks on them and window ledges had quite a lot of dust. When I opened the wardrobe the tea and coffee facility tray was all watermarked also. Outside the room there was a big bush growing which covered most of the window which made the room very dark when getting ready to go out. After our meal we returned to hotel after parking the car in the car park we had to make our way over the Courtyard which was not lit I had to remove my shoes as it was a cobbled area and I was afraid of falling over we were lucky we had our mobile phones with us so we used the torch on them to make a safe crossing. I was happy with our breakfast in the morning but did have to wait outside the restaurant for several minutes to be shown to a table. After breakfast we handed our keys into reception but had no acknowledgement of a goodbye from the receptionist felt very disappointed we were not asked if I'll stay was ok. I'm returning home I wrote a letter of complaint to the hotel and as of yet I have not received a reply.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to post this review. I am sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your stay and didn't receive a reply to your letter. I have checked with the team and we do not appear to have received it. Our procedures are different due to COVID 19 but we do advise our guests on their confirmation that the spa is closed and to contact us to book the restaurant so that they do not miss out as we have reduced our capacity in the restaurant due to social distancing. I am sorry to hear that the Receptionist did not acknowledge you on check out. We will address this with the team. Thank you for your valuable feedback which will help us improve our service. Colin T, Birmingham, United Kingdom 27/08/2020

My son, with his family, had booked a two day break at Seckford Hall, and my wife and I decided to join them. The building, an historic country Manor House, is very impressive and atmospheric. My son's spacious family suite was ideal, whilst my wife and I had a beautiful, comfortable and well appointed suite in the Courtyard annex. A nice touch was the private outdoor terrace to the rear, where the whole family were able to relax over a few drinks. The welcoming, efficient and friendly staff prepared a table to accommodate all of us for breakfast and dinner, both of which were excellent. With Covid restrictions in place the impressive pool and spa area was closed, but the attractive and extensive grounds made for an ideal stroll. Whether with family or just as a quiet couple this hotel offers relaxation, style, comfort, good food and stunning value. I again offer my thanks to the amazing and hard working staff who ensured that we all enjoyed a wonderful short break.

"Not as good it we'd hoped"

3
david t, Great Malvern, United Kingdom 26/08/2020

It's a fabulous building and the change to a hotel has been sympathetic and it hasn't lost its original features. Check-in was quick and friendly, the Covid preprations were thorough and easy to follow. The room was on the small side, but everything worked and it was quiet, even though it's quite close to the main road. Had dinner on the first night which was fine, but the wine list and, particularly the choice of beers was extremely poor. In an area of so many breweries why only offer Boddington's from Manchester on draught?? The breakfast service was pretty poor - it's now served rather than buffet which is perfectly understandable, however there was no system in place to ensure everyone was served efficiently - it was clear that other gests were getting frustrated too. The young lady with the bun merits a mention as being rather unfriendly - no greeting when we arrived; my bacon was like shoe leather and should never have left the kitchen - she changed it promptly, but without apology or, indeed, any communication whatsoever. The crew on the second morning were much more friendly, but even then I didn't get everything I'd ordered. It could be really, really nice and special, but the lack of attention to detail would put me off going there again. It doesn't inspire confidence as a wedding venue because of this. The points to rectify are relatively small and all the more irritating due to this - staff training is definitely in order.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to post this review. I am sorry to hear that you had issues with breakfast service. Our Operations Manager will be working with the team to improve the service as this is not our usual standard. We do offer Ghostship on draught which is locally brewed in addition to Boddingtons. katie_blackmore, Witham, United Kingdom 24/08/2020

We had a junior suite and an executive room on the courtyard for 3 night break. Both rooms were spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and comfortable. Because of covid19 there was no housekeeping but we just needed to ask for clean towels or toiletries if we needed them. Breakfast was hot and tasty and the choice was good. Dinner was also of a very high quality. The grounds are lovely for a wander. The staff were all friendly professional and hard working. I called a few days before our visit to ask a question and mentioned that one of my children is autistic and the lady who helped went above and beyond to help us. She organised for a special table to be set up for us away from the crowds so it would be more quiet. This made the whole experience so much easier for us to manage and therefore much more enjoyable. I would whole heartedly recommend seckford hall to anyone considering it.

363carol, hockley 21/08/2020

We have just stayed at Seckford Hall which we love. We have been a few times and stayed in the main hotel, but this time only the Courtyard rooms were available. Our room was large and modern with a nice bathroom and big comfortable bed. A couple of niggles in that it was very warm, strange that they were not built with air conditioning as relatively new, we had to open the door and put the chain on. The other was that coming back from the restaurant after dinner it was very dark and difficult to see where we was going. Quite dangerous and an accident waiting to happen. There are lights but they were not working, think we will only stay in main hotel from now on. The staff on this occasion were the best I think we have ever encountered, everyone from housekeeping to reception and restaurant/bar staff were friendly and helpful and all worked very hard. During the day we took our books into the walled garden and sat under the little bandstand. Looking around it is such a shame that the flower beds are not looked after as this would make a nice garden stunning. Surely a local gardener could be employed to pull out the weeds and put in a few bedding plants. Also rusty tables and chairs left around of no use to anyone. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all lovely. Finally on check out we were asked to check the bill, this was impossible as every item is just 1530 Restaurant Food and Drink so could have been anything. Overall a lovely stay and looking forward to staying again.

We decided on family staycation and the venue was well located and pleasing to eye. Service and aesthetics all very good, only grumble that neither showers in our 2 superior rooms were working either at all or well which you would expect paying for the upgrade. However overall great stay

"Disappointing, poor service"

EllenE89, Hitchin, United Kingdom 17/08/2020

I arrived in temperatures well into the 30s to discover the heating was on full blast making the room unusable for hours. This was apparently due to the old heating system. As there was no thermostat someone had to enter my room. I then had to request a fan and some tea bags. I was given a single pack with one tea bag in for a 2 night stay. I then had to request a remote control and a spare cup. The blinds needed to be fixed, and the following morning the toilet needed fixing. So having hoped to wipe everything down and have a COVID free stay I had 3 different people enter my room. The cleanliness of the room left much to be desired and obviously they hadn't taken the advantage of having no guests to do a proper clean. Very disappointing. The grounds are attractive.

Lovely old building. Staff very friendly and helpful. Really nice dinner in the restaurant and a good breakfast. Covid 19 procedures seemed to be working well so were comfortable with that. We noted that the hotel was participating in the eat out to help out scheme. However that, for some unknown reason, is not included. I queried this via email on checking my invoice but after two days there was no reply. I then called and was advised that "oh no, we don't include it for the breakfast" . I would have thought that you either participate or you don't. This hotel seems to choose what is and what isn't. I also have other queries on my bill from seemingly inconsistent pricing. My advice would be to check your bill before paying.

Mike Day, Marketing at Seckford Hall, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay and found the team friendly and helpful. I am sorry you had issues with your bill which I am told a refund was made. We have chosen not to include breakfast in the Eat Out scheme as the vast majority of our guests choose rates including breakfast which is at an already reduced rate so to ensure consistency for all customers we do not discount breakfast. I had to be in this part of the world at short notice so booked a one night stay here. Very glad I did. For me a perfect mix of a lovely old country house setting with relaxed and friendly and very helpful staff and superb food. I do not know this part of the world at all so knew nothing of the hotel before going and given we were not long out of lock down I did not expect things to be running normally. That said on arrival the house is amazing as it looked online. I had a bedroom looking out of the front of the house. All Covid related measures were in place and adhered to by everyone, staff were welcoming, friendly and accommodating. Room was very clean indeed. I ate in the hotel restaurant in the evening and the food was superb. It is rare these days to have a steak cooked exactly as you asked for in my experience but it was cooked to perfection and very tasty. Portion size was perfect also. Everyone was very friendly. Just perfect, many thanks indeed for a great experience.

Stayed for one night on the Sunday deal bed and breakfast and £32 per person towards dinner. Check in smooth and efficient. Room ok but very old furniture not in particular good condition. Beds comfortable. No mini bar or refrigerator in room. Bathroom ok but there was no shower gel had to phone reception and had one small tube delivered for both of us. The shower was inefficient and you had to move around to get wet. The grounds out the back were overgrown and in need of cutting and all the weeds removed.Dinner was ok but there was room for improvement, no bread or melba toast with the smoked mackerel pate, the roast beef was ok but beware of the “Yorkshire puddings “ never any where have I been dished up such a pathetic attempt at one of the easiest things to make we both thought it was made of cardboard. All in all disappointing for the hall looks stunning from the outside until you go though the doors and it is mediocre. On a positive note the breakfast was good.

Wanted to get away for a few days and be pampered with good service and good food - had a great meal in the restaurant, really enjoyed afternoon tea and the staff were all really friendly throughout the hotel - plenty of room for the boys to run around in the Garden with their football, which was a bonus. golf club within a 5 min walk was a bonus! Stunning old house with load of history, great parking and all round we have a great stay. shame the pool was closed but the hotel managed the Covid-19 really well, sure the SPA would have been excellent. I recently booked a night away for my anniversary at a hotel in Norfolk but quickly checked out due to cleanliness issues. As a very last minute replacement I phoned Seckford Hall in Suffolk and booked a double room for the night. On arrival, the duty manager, Moira, had already been informed it was my anniversary. She had upgraded us to a suite and left a bottle of presecco in the accommodation which was extremely thoughtful. The suite was absolutely beautiful and couldn't have been more perfect. We had a wonderful relaxing evening followed up with a superb cooked breakfast. The main hotel is gorgeous and the staff, friendly and welcoming. I cannot recommend enough. There is a spa but unfortunately it was closed due to COVID. I will definitely be returning to use this facility, perfect to unwind.

The hotel and gardens are lovely - we ate lunch in the gardens. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was really nice, especially the puddings! The hotel is taking part in the "Eat Out" scheme so our lunch was incredible value for money! The staff did a great job of making us feel welcome and relaxed while still following all the rules re hygiene. I use a mobility scooter and the building is very old but the staff were always on hand with ramps when needed. I will definitely be going back and will stay longer next time.

Have just spent a few days at this beautiful hotel after lockdown. I can only praise the team here who are very friendly and welcoming and are dealing very well with the changes due to covid 19. The food is amazing and breakfast is cooked to order and piping hot. Shame Spa wasn't open but understandable in present conditions. We will definitely be back and will be recommending it to our friends and family.

I booked a room and spa treatments in March. I was made to pay for spa treatments up front. They then cancelled the room/appointments due to covid, which is fine. However, nearly 5 months later, several emails and phone calls i still haven't received a refund for prepaid treatments. Emails then ignored

Beautiful hotel in lovely grounds.we only stayed one night in order to visit the surrounding area. We stayed in a standard double which was fine if a little tired. We ate at the 1530 restaurant, the food was great and well presented but the wine list was pretty poor. We were told they were only offering a limited wine and drinks list due to having just reopened. Unfortunately the wines chosen were all pretty standard and didn't match the quality of the food and the drinks menu was littered with spelling mistakes and errors. We fancied an after dinner digestif but despite many spirits and liqeurs behind the bar they would only serve us what was on their reduced menu- spirits on offer were Archers, Malibu and Tia Maria but we could see many better choices which we couldn't be served for some reason.... ??!! The drinks offering which was more like a pub really let down an otherwise lovely stay and the staff were great too. We just Can't really see why during post lockdown such a limited offering is necessary especially when what we really wanted was temptingly within sight behind the bar....

"Left standing in the rain at midnight for an hour"

Heike826, Aldwick, United Kingdom 14/07/2020

I booked this hotel for my son and his girlfriend as a graduation get away after lockdown had eased. Oh what a regret - the hotel is nice but....they went out for the evening, came back at 23.45 and their key would not open the door to get into the hall and the reception was empty and no one was answering knocks and phone calls for over an hour whilst they stood in the rain. They phoned Best Western in the US and the lady apologised and said she would write a file note to the hotel to provide a full refund. Eventually someone opened the door, who said he was a guest, turned out the next day he was the grounds's man. At checkout the bill was reduced by the cost of breakfast for two people, apologies were made.... however to me totally insufficient response to standing outside in the rain for over an hour at midnight. On a day which should have been full of celebration, the irony is that after easing lockdown, they wanted to get back into the hotel and found themselves in a truly locked out situation. I do understand that COVID has a massive impact on staffing levels - however phones should be diverted and these kind of situation should not arise. Very dissatisfied mother who wanted to make a life time memory as a present.

We are just back from a fabulous one night stay. For the last 16 years Seckford Hall has been our bolt hole, somewhere we go to unwind and despite some essential maintenance works at the front and the spa being closed, we still had a fabulous time. Like other reviewers we got a great deal and stayed in our favourite room - no 36 the Granary. Having just re-opened it's doors and just a few guests, the hotel was running with a very tight crew just Anna who managed EVERYTHING front of house and the Chef. Important thing to note is you are currently required to pre-book for all meals (24 hrs notice) incl afternoon tea - completely understandable at this current time. We were so well looked after from the minute we arrived and our evening meal and breakfast were superb - all made with top quality produce and a lot of love! We have seen Seckford go through lots of ups and downs, but love the place so keep going back. With Anna as an example of the new management team - they are undoubtedly on the up again. Would highly recommend.

We have just returned from a two night stay at Seckford Hall, just for a little break away. We were already aware the spa facilities were not in use due to current government guidelines and so were not disappointed. We got a good deal for our stay through booking.com for £153 for two nights room only. Through the hotels own website it would have been £240. We have booked an afternoon tea for our arrival which was ok. I'll be honest I've had better. And at £18 per person I expected more. So I would give that a miss in the future knowing I can have way better elsewhere. We were one of the only couples in the hotel, I believe we only saw another two while we were there. The staff did very well, they were very accommodating and friendly considering they were doing everything... reception, bar tending, waitressing literally everything. I've seen a lot of reviews saying that the hotel is dated and needs an update - well it is a Tudor building and everything is in keeping with this. Our room was beautiful, I was really impressed with it. We had Room 2 which had its own little balcony with a table and chairs and lovely view of the grounds. Everything was clean and the bed more than comfortable. Best nights sleep I've had in a while. Our first morning we had booked breakfast, there was only us and another party of 4.... it was £15 each, took 45mins to prepare and when we did finally get it it was the wrong breakfast, we were hungry by this point and so ate it. It wasn't bad, but couldn't understand how our order could be wrong when catering for 6 people at a time..... That night we had a few drinks at the hotel and decided to give it another go with dinner in the 1530 restaurant and we were not disappointed it was absolutely beautiful highly recommend the steak and the pork belly, absolutely to die for. The morning of check out we decided to have a nice long lay in before we left as we never get one at home! Unfortunately the cleaners had arrived at 9am and made so much noise in the two rooms right next to us (shouting and talking, banging and crashing - not vacuuming) we decided to pack up and leave early as we couldn't relax. Even if you were up and about having a coffee or whatever it just wasn't what I expected and I haven't had that issue in other hotels either. We will give it another go later on in the year when the restrictions are lifted and we can use the spa. Just unfortunate there were a few little downers to it... ending on a brighter note however the two lovely ladies at reception I take my hat off to! And the room was a 10/10 for me

"A very disappointing 3 days"

We have just left Seckford Hall after spending three days and two nights with friends post lockdown. This hotel is just not ready for visitors yet so please save your money and don't go. We spent £240 for two nights and were initially impressed driving up to the front of the hotel. Our room (Seckford room) looked immediately large and impressive until we realised that the shower didn't work at all, there was no hot tap or water for the sink, the coffee machine didn't work (there was a pod stuck in there probably since the covid lock down), the room had loads of cobwebs, only some of the electric sockets were working, the bath was very dirty and there were workmen on site which were noisy and very visible from our room. We reported the shower, as we really did want to take a shower and told that someone would come “tomorrow “ and look at it. When tomorrow came we were told that the shower needed a part that would be arriving “tomorrow “ which was the day we were leaving for home! The electricity didn't work at all in our friends room and an extension lead had to be run from the corridor so that they could watch tv or use anything electrical. How dangerous is that! The food we had there was good and Moira the waitress very entertaining but this was spoiled by everything else. We were offered free breakfast which is normally £10 extra but offered no refund or even another room to shower in. Maybe in six months time the housekeepers will be back and the facilities checked but we would have thought that the long absence of visitors would have been useful time to check that all was ready for guests.

Really needs some money spending. On arrival there were alot of staff and would have been nice to have been shown to our room. Bathroom was very mouldy. Room very tired looking. Food portions extremely small, my husband was starving. Pool area extremely grubby, including the inside of the pool. Hot tub not working. Changing rooms filthy and robes and towels all over the floor. Breakfast room was really dirty. So much food on the floor. I appreciate this is an old building but the general cleanliness and decoration needs to improve greatly. Would not recommend staying here.

I have been coming to "Seckford Hall" for over many many years. More than 20 years. My partner and I have ALWAYS been happy with the staff and the meals. Always been 1st Class. "Seckford Hall" is in beautiful surroundings. However, I like to know what is happening now?? "Seckford Hall" has gone down on ratings. This is so sad. The food was absolutely tastless. The amount served on the plate is a Joke. We had to ask for some bread, when that was served it came with no side plates or knives. No Butter but some oil instead?? The Dining room has always been a delight to have a meal, But now the Dining room is dark, no atmosphere. When then moved to the Lounge for Coffee as it is a lovely room to finish the evening with a nice coffee etc. The coffee arrived in cups. Where has the coffee pot gone and the milk/cream jug. The evening was disappointing as we have always liked and always recommended "Seckford Hall" to family & friends. However, I have to say the staff were helpful and friendly. Please Seckford Hall , Get back To The Service that we have all been used to in the past years.

Bit of a wow moment when the hotel hoves into view from the drive. However, that's where the moment ends. Front entrance/reception area is all wrong and not welcoming. Neither was the Receptionist. There's a large, underused lounge area to the left of the front door which should be used as Reception. The existing room could be used to expand the bar and make it brighter. The stair and corridor carpets are very 1970s pub. The “1530” restaurant is OK but quite dark. There's a much nicer area to eat next to it which doesn't seem to get used. Our room (24) was comfortable and had a small balcony and garden views. The bathroom was tiny, however, and we had a technical issue with the computer-controlled shower on our first morning which saw the intervention of both a cleaning lady and a maintenance man. The Bar Manager on our first night, Alan, was fantastic. Quietly confident, knew his stuff, polite and friendly. Unfortunately for us, Alan was only there for our first night. The next two were overseen by a rather frazzled lady who seemed put out by customers ordering drinks and even sighed and rolled her eyes when we came in at 9.30pm for a post-dinner drink. She had just cashed up and was planning on not doing any more work that evening. We felt very unwelcome and did not hang around. We didn't use the spa so cannot comment on it. Breakfast was always good and the staff on duty then are lovely. I'm sorry to say that we were not impressed with Seckford Hall. We wish we had stayed on longer in Norwich or chosen a different hotel in Suffolk.

"Disappointing birthday treat"

Anita S, London 29/02/2020

We organised an afternoon tea at Seckford Hall for a family member's birthday. The grounds are impressive and the building is beautiful. However, we arrived in an empty room, nobody welcomed us as we wondered around, and we had to find our own way to another empty area with a table set out for us. Apart from a a very nice man called Andrea, who chatted to us on our way out, we found the rest of the staff quite unfriendly, especially considering we had told them we were there for a special birthday. The food was bland to say the least (very few sandwiches, flavourless clotted cream...). My advice is to go there for a coffee or a beer, since it's such an impressive building, but do not bother to go for a meal or a celebration. We left feeling disappointed.

We booked a short break with our small cavalier King Charles Spaniel to relax and renew as well as enjoy the lovely countryside. We stayed in a junior suite, room 35 in the annex and it was perfect for us. Lovely decoration and a good lounge, excellent bathroom plus gorgeous bedroom, comfy bed and ensuite upstairs. Breakfast in the Garden room was very good with a splendid buffet table plus cooked dishes to order. Grounds are lovely and extensive and should you wish a Golf course is opposite the grounds and entrance. The staff team we met were attentive and friendly, we will be back in the better weather, loved the whole experience.

"False dinner charges and contaminated food"

2
User 28/02/2020

Despite advising staff on booking and at breakfast they managed to serve my daughter gluten food, which led to her being sick whilst visiting Sutton Hoo. To cap it off they charged us for a dinner we didn't have (gluten based so not suitable for her) and after removing it on check out, have now tried to sneak through a payment on my pre-authorisation a week later. I'm again in dispute with them over this ...

"Very poor customer service and spa not working and dirty."

User 25/02/2020

Sadly, we expected a 4* star service but the experience was more 2*. We waited 25 minutes for drinks with evening meal and the restaurant was half empty at the time . Food was ok bit cold second night and 40 minutes to arrive. In the my partner went to the bar himself. Had to ask for coffee 4 times at breakfast and then gave up. Spa was not fully working steam room broken all weekend. You will feel annoyed if you came for a spa weekend, especially which some guests did. The ladies changing rooms were filthy with sanitary towels left in loos and generally poor standard of hygiene. Went into ladies' toilet to find overfilled bins and no soap and shampoo as all empty or toilet tissue. I had to ask the staff and to get toilet paper and soap. I definitely would never recommend this hotel purely on terrible customer service which is a shame as the building is lovely but the rooms are suffocatingly small. You need to upgrade to the suite really which we did.

Stayed over Valentines weekend. What a romantic weekend, staff had gone to the trouble of putting chocolate hearts on the pillows and rose petals on the bed lovely surprise and thoughtful touch. We visited this hotel to stay about ten years ago and were blown away by the quality of the cuisine and the beautiful decor, completely in sympathy with such a fine historic property. Sadly, today we nipped in for lunch and were so disappointed. The restaurant has obviously had some kind of makeover and was drab and colourless and the food was hopeless. After a fair old wait, over 30 mins, we were presented with a lasagne that was so dry round the edges it would have taken a chainsaw to cut and some battered monkfish with a batter about an inch thick and some thrice cooked chips that tasted of old oil. Also, a completely not fizzy lime and soda. I must mention the staff at this point who were most professional in offering a meal replacement and, as we were in a hurry by now, discounting the meal. The fault here lies with the chef who should pay more attention to what leaves his kitchen. Shame, as this is a most beautiful setting.
