"Disappointing room, rooms in need of urgent upgrade, decoration etc"

The room we were given has wallpaper completely coming away from the wall, The room is tired, chipped paint etc, I showed a picture of this and was offered an alternative room, also in need of decoration, when I fed back to reception, I was told that yes rooms were in need of updating and decorating, for these prices, it's completely unreasonable and a disappointment. We were only told on arrival that the spa was closed due to covid, as the charges are in light of a spa, this was another disappointment. We had visited a hotel with a spa, prior to this, they managed it very well with covid measures, seems like this is too much effort

"Disappointing afternoon tea"

I went to Seckford Hall yesterday for afternoon tea. I have an intolerance to cows milk and therefore ordered a dairy free version which I was so disappointed with. I have to say the sandwiches were nice but the cakes were just awful. They had the consistency of cardboard and no taste. I also had some sort of chocolate cake which was just disgusting and had an after taste of fairy liquid. This is the second time I have been for afternoon tea and the first time didn't blow me away, but I was so disappointed with this time. I couldn't eat any of my cakes apart from the macaroon which I do have to say was delicious. From my experience, I think it's fair to say they are not geared up for food intolerances. It's not difficult to make dairy free cakes, all you need to do is substitute the butter for a plant alternative. I don't know what Seckford Hall had done to my cakes!! Sadly very disappointed.

The Good: The service and food in the restaurant was good. The room booked for the night was spacious. Lovely building and surroundings. The Bad: For the price of the room I paid, we expected the shower to work in the bathroom, it didn't. That is a major oversight and not something a guest should ever experience. I appreciate the empathy from management, though at the end of the day I am paying for a room and expect a shower to work and no offer of a concession on the bill because of that is very poor. The waiting service in the garden before dinner was generally quite slow and frustrating . The coffee in the morning at breakfast was barely warm. Would I recommend this hotel to a friend? No, for the amount I paid for the room I expected a lot more.

This is such a wonderful place! Both my husband and I went for a well deserved break , our first for many months. I had a leg injury and was a bit impaired with how I could get around . We ended up upgrading to room 39 which was really almost an apartment! Really comfortable and very clean . Lots of room! The food was great for both dinner and breakfast What really put this place above many others was the fabulous staff. Sharon on reception shone out as so very helpful and looked after us so well. She was the one who found us the upgrade to the room , knowing that I'd benefit from the huge balcony !! Anna too with her knowledge of the very interesting history of this incredible place We will be back for sure!!

"Afternoon Tea"

Arrival for Afternoon Tea ,it was soon apparent that the receptionist was very rude which ruined our afternoon.Really we should of just walked back out the hotel after being spoken to so rude by the receptionist.The afternoon Tea itself was very bland with mainly cheese sandwiches and one scone per person and every cake much the same, tasteless sponges . So disappointed as was far more enjoyable in previous visits. Will now have to look elsewhere in the future to visit.

"Worth Staying, But Could Do Better"

Seckford Hall is a grand looking medium sized hotel just off the A12 near Woodbridge. We visited Seckford during the pandemic, and so the spa was shut and special measures were in place. On the whole they seemed to be dealing with social distancing and hygiene measures pretty well so no complaints on that front. There are rooms in the main hotel and in the neighbouring outbuildings. I understand that the room we got allocated was the bridal suite - a master bedroom, living room and second bedroom that the kids stayed in, plus an en-suite bathroom (with jacuzzi and TV!) and separate loo. I'm not sure what that would normally cost but we got a very good deal on it. Very comfortable, very pleased. Staff were very friendly and helpful. But - and here is the reason for a 3 rather than 4 star review - service at breakfast was poor. The lady who served us repeatedly got our order wrong (in both days we were there), and simply said that she had only recently come back as if that was a reason not to listen properly or fix problems as they occurred. The food itself was good Would absolutely stay again though

"Not what it could be"

The building, grounds and location are beautiful. Many people staying were there to play golf at the adjacent golf course. We stayed in a courtyard room, which was fine. The interior of both the hotel and our room were unimaginative, slightly down at heel, and at odds with the character of the building itself. The restaurant completely lacks atmosphere and the interior would be a better fit for a budget business chain. The service staff, although well meaning and pleasant, seemed to be poorly trained and lacked pace and professionalism. The restaurant menu was disappointing. It had no sense of season or place or of the chef having a style or point of view. Well executed standards with good ingredients can be a good thing, but it was hard to find any enthusiasm for an offer quite so dull. It left me wondering if this was a case of a management team holding back a kitchen team that could do much more. And if you like good coffee, go elsewhere! We ate at the hotel the first night and after that went to restaurants in Orford and Aldeburgh which were fantastic. We loved visiting the area and will definitely be going back to explore more of Suffolk. We won't be going back to Seckford Hall unless there is a change of management. It could really be so much more than it is. It's only the beautiful building and grounds that save it from being an utterly dull and amateur venture.

"Afternoon tea"

We where very disapointed with our afternoon tea.The sandwiches where stale with poor filling.Cakes where approx 2×3cms tasteless sponges cut from a slab.Scones where large and heavy.False advertising for afternoon tea showed on website assorted cakes including eclairs.It was the worse afternoon tea we have had very poor quality and overpriced.I have sent 2 emails to Seckford hall asking who i contact but have been ignored.

"Not what I expected"

My husband and I booked a break away for the night. It wasn't for a special occasion but was a nice treat for us as we don't get much time away from the children. We were so looking forward to it but we were very disappointed. When I booked the room I was not aware the spa facilities will not open when trying to book it online I couldn't get any appointments. Set my code the the team at Seckford Hall I didn't get an answer so I left a voicemail message asking for someone to call me back which they didn't 2 days later I called again and was informed by the receptionist that Spa was not open. He did tell me that it was advertised on line but this is something I didn't see at first glance. We were disappointed because this is something that we had hoped to do. Receptionist then asked if we would like to book a table for an evening meal I then explain to her that I had looked online to book a table there were wasn't any available she explained to me that all tables are reserved for residence in the evening this also wasn't well advertised online so we booked a table in a local restaurant. On arriving to the hotel we made our way to reception and were left standing for for at least 5 minutes before someone approached us and checked us in we were given room 31 which we were explained was in the courtyard. On arriving to a room I was a little disappointed as pictures on the website so fantastic rooms. On first glance our room left clean and tidy but once entering the bathroom all taps had water marks on them and window ledges had quite a lot of dust. When I opened the wardrobe the tea and coffee facility tray was all watermarked also. Outside the room there was a big bush growing which covered most of the window which made the room very dark when getting ready to go out. After our meal we returned to hotel after parking the car in the car park we had to make our way over the Courtyard which was not lit I had to remove my shoes as it was a cobbled area and I was afraid of falling over we were lucky we had our mobile phones with us so we used the torch on them to make a safe crossing. I was happy with our breakfast in the morning but did have to wait outside the restaurant for several minutes to be shown to a table. After breakfast we handed our keys into reception but had no acknowledgement of a goodbye from the receptionist felt very disappointed we were not asked if I'll stay was ok. I'm returning home I wrote a letter of complaint to the hotel and as of yet I have not received a reply.

Our procedures are different due to COVID 19 but we do advise our guests on their confirmation that the spa is closed and to contact us to book the restaurant so that they do not miss out as we have reduced our capacity in the restaurant due to social distancing. "A wonderful break."

My son, with his family, had booked a two day break at Seckford Hall, and my wife and I decided to join them. The building, an historic country Manor House, is very impressive and atmospheric. My son's spacious family suite was ideal, whilst my wife and I had a beautiful, comfortable and well appointed suite in the Courtyard annex. A nice touch was the private outdoor terrace to the rear, where the whole family were able to relax over a few drinks. The welcoming, efficient and friendly staff prepared a table to accommodate all of us for breakfast and dinner, both of which were excellent. With Covid restrictions in place the impressive pool and spa area was closed, but the attractive and extensive grounds made for an ideal stroll. Whether with family or just as a quiet couple this hotel offers relaxation, style, comfort, good food and stunning value. I again offer my thanks to the amazing and hard working staff who ensured that we all enjoyed a wonderful short break.

"Not as good it we'd hoped"

It's a fabulous building and the change to a hotel has been sympathetic and it hasn't lost its original features. Check-in was quick and friendly, the Covid preprations were thorough and easy to follow. The room was on the small side, but everything worked and it was quiet, even though it's quite close to the main road. Had dinner on the first night which was fine, but the wine list and, particularly the choice of beers was extremely poor. In an area of so many breweries why only offer Boddington's from Manchester on draught?? The breakfast service was pretty poor - it's now served rather than buffet which is perfectly understandable, however there was no system in place to ensure everyone was served efficiently - it was clear that other gests were getting frustrated too. The young lady with the bun merits a mention as being rather unfriendly - no greeting when we arrived; my bacon was like shoe leather and should never have left the kitchen - she changed it promptly, but without apology or, indeed, any communication whatsoever. The crew on the second morning were much more friendly, but even then I didn't get everything I'd ordered. It could be really, really nice and special, but the lack of attention to detail would put me off going there again. It doesn't inspire confidence as a wedding venue because of this. The points to rectify are relatively small and all the more irritating due to this - staff training is definitely in order.

"Little bit of luxury"

We had a junior suite and an executive room on the courtyard for 3 night break. Both rooms were spotlessly clean, beautifully decorated and comfortable. Because of covid19 there was no housekeeping but we just needed to ask for clean towels or toiletries if we needed them. Breakfast was hot and tasty and the choice was good. Dinner was also of a very high quality. The grounds are lovely for a wander. The staff were all friendly professional and hard working. I called a few days before our visit to ask a question and mentioned that one of my children is autistic and the lady who helped went above and beyond to help us. She organised for a special table to be set up for us away from the crowds so it would be more quiet. This made the whole experience so much easier for us to manage and therefore much more enjoyable. I would whole heartedly recommend seckford hall to anyone considering it.

"Nice Break Away"

We have just stayed at Seckford Hall which we love. We have been a few times and stayed in the main hotel, but this time only the Courtyard rooms were available. Our room was large and modern with a nice bathroom and big comfortable bed. A couple of niggles in that it was very warm, strange that they were not built with air conditioning as relatively new, we had to open the door and put the chain on. The other was that coming back from the restaurant after dinner it was very dark and difficult to see where we was going. Quite dangerous and an accident waiting to happen. There are lights but they were not working, think we will only stay in main hotel from now on. The staff on this occasion were the best I think we have ever encountered, everyone from housekeeping to reception and restaurant/bar staff were friendly and helpful and all worked very hard. During the day we took our books into the walled garden and sat under the little bandstand. Looking around it is such a shame that the flower beds are not looked after as this would make a nice garden stunning. Surely a local gardener could be employed to pull out the weeds and put in a few bedding plants. Also rusty tables and chairs left around of no use to anyone. Breakfast, lunch and dinner were all lovely. Finally on check out we were asked to check the bill, this was impossible as every item is just 1530 Restaurant Food and Drink so could have been anything. Overall a lovely stay and looking forward to staying again.

"Very nice hotel"

We decided on family staycation and the venue was well located and pleasing to eye. Service and aesthetics all very good, only grumble that neither showers in our 2 superior rooms were working either at all or well which you would expect paying for the upgrade. However overall great stay

"Disappointing, poor service"

I arrived in temperatures well into the 30s to discover the heating was on full blast making the room unusable for hours. This was apparently due to the old heating system. As there was no thermostat someone had to enter my room. I then had to request a fan and some tea bags. I was given a single pack with one tea bag in for a 2 night stay. I then had to request a remote control and a spare cup. The blinds needed to be fixed, and the following morning the toilet needed fixing. So having hoped to wipe everything down and have a COVID free stay I had 3 different people enter my room. The cleanliness of the room left much to be desired and obviously they hadn't taken the advantage of having no guests to do a proper clean. Very disappointing. The grounds are attractive.

"Lovely hotel and great restaurant but check your invoice."

Lovely old building. Staff very friendly and helpful. Really nice dinner in the restaurant and a good breakfast. Covid 19 procedures seemed to be working well so were comfortable with that. We noted that the hotel was participating in the eat out to help out scheme. However that, for some unknown reason, is not included. I queried this via email on checking my invoice but after two days there was no reply. I then called and was advised that "oh no, we don't include it for the breakfast" . I would have thought that you either participate or you don't. This hotel seems to choose what is and what isn't. I also have other queries on my bill from seemingly inconsistent pricing. My advice would be to check your bill before paying.

I love this hotel - the room is so lovely and the bathroom is very luxurious! We had a family room it was very spacious. Breakfast was really nice they also have gluten free options! Would definitely stay again!

"Pretty much perfect for me."

I had to be in this part of the world at short notice so booked a one night stay here. Very glad I did. For me a perfect mix of a lovely old country house setting with relaxed and friendly and very helpful staff and superb food. I do not know this part of the world at all so knew nothing of the hotel before going and given we were not long out of lock down I did not expect things to be running normally. That said on arrival the house is amazing as it looked online. I had a bedroom looking out of the front of the house. All Covid related measures were in place and adhered to by everyone, staff were welcoming, friendly and accommodating. Room was very clean indeed. I ate in the hotel restaurant in the evening and the food was superb. It is rare these days to have a steak cooked exactly as you asked for in my experience but it was cooked to perfection and very tasty. Portion size was perfect also. Everyone was very friendly. Just perfect, many thanks indeed for a great experience.

Cannot fault Seckford hall.courteous staff (nothing was too much trouble),very clean accommodation and amazing food all this and set in beautiful grounds to top it off. wouldn't hesitate to return and would highly reccomend

"Tired and pricey"

Stayed for one night on the Sunday deal bed and breakfast and £32 per person towards dinner. Check in smooth and efficient. Room ok but very old furniture not in particular good condition. Beds comfortable. No mini bar or refrigerator in room. Bathroom ok but there was no shower gel had to phone reception and had one small tube delivered for both of us. The shower was inefficient and you had to move around to get wet. The grounds out the back were overgrown and in need of cutting and all the weeds removed.Dinner was ok but there was room for improvement, no bread or melba toast with the smoked mackerel pate, the roast beef was ok but beware of the “Yorkshire puddings “ never any where have I been dished up such a pathetic attempt at one of the easiest things to make we both thought it was made of cardboard. All in all disappointing for the hall looks stunning from the outside until you go though the doors and it is mediocre. On a positive note the breakfast was good.

"Even with Covid-19 restrictions, excellent"

Wanted to get away for a few days and be pampered with good service and good food - had a great meal in the restaurant, really enjoyed afternoon tea and the staff were all really friendly throughout the hotel - plenty of room for the boys to run around in the Garden with their football, which was a bonus. golf club within a 5 min walk was a bonus! Stunning old house with load of history, great parking and all round we have a great stay. shame the pool was closed but the hotel managed the Covid-19 really well, sure the SPA would have been excellent. We will return again

"Beautiful"

I recently booked a night away for my anniversary at a hotel in Norfolk but quickly checked out due to cleanliness issues. As a very last minute replacement I phoned Seckford Hall in Suffolk and booked a double room for the night. On arrival, the duty manager, Moira, had already been informed it was my anniversary. She had upgraded us to a suite and left a bottle of presecco in the accommodation which was extremely thoughtful. The suite was absolutely beautiful and couldn't have been more perfect. We had a wonderful relaxing evening followed up with a superb cooked breakfast. The main hotel is gorgeous and the staff, friendly and welcoming. I cannot recommend enough. There is a spa but unfortunately it was closed due to COVID. I will definitely be returning to use this facility, perfect to unwind.

"What a beautiful hotel!"

The hotel and gardens are lovely - we ate lunch in the gardens. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food was really nice, especially the puddings! The hotel is taking part in the "Eat Out" scheme so our lunch was incredible value for money! The staff did a great job of making us feel welcome and relaxed while still following all the rules re hygiene. I use a mobility scooter and the building is very old but the staff were always on hand with ramps when needed. I will definitely be going back and will stay longer next time.

Have just spent a few days at this beautiful hotel after lockdown. I can only praise the team here who are very friendly and welcoming and are dealing very well with the changes due to covid 19. The food is amazing and breakfast is cooked to order and piping hot. Shame Spa wasn't open but understandable in present conditions. We will definitely be back and will be recommending it to our friends and family.

"Avoid!!"

I booked a room and spa treatments in March. I was made to pay for spa treatments up front. They then cancelled the room/appointments due to covid, which is fine. However, nearly 5 months later, several emails and phone calls i still haven't received a refund for prepaid treatments. Emails then ignored

"Mixed bag"

Beautiful hotel in lovely grounds.we only stayed one night in order to visit the surrounding area. We stayed in a standard double which was fine if a little tired. We ate at the 1530 restaurant, the food was great and well presented but the wine list was pretty poor. We were told they were only offering a limited wine and drinks list due to having just reopened. Unfortunately the wines chosen were all pretty standard and didn't match the quality of the food and the drinks menu was littered with spelling mistakes and errors. We fancied an after dinner digestif but despite many spirits and liqeurs behind the bar they would only serve us what was on their reduced menu- spirits on offer were Archers, Malibu and Tia Maria but we could see many better choices which we couldn't be served for some reason.... ??!! The drinks offering which was more like a pub really let down an otherwise lovely stay and the staff were great too. We just Can't really see why during post lockdown such a limited offering is necessary especially when what we really wanted was temptingly within sight behind the bar....

I booked this hotel for my son and his girlfriend as a graduation get away after lockdown had eased. Oh what a regret - the hotel is nice but....they went out for the evening, came back at 23.45 and their key would not open the door to get into the hall and the reception was empty and no one was answering knocks and phone calls for over an hour whilst they stood in the rain. They phoned Best Western in the US and the lady apologised and said she would write a file note to the hotel to provide a full refund. Eventually someone opened the door, who said he was a guest, turned out the next day he was the grounds's man. At checkout the bill was reduced by the cost of breakfast for two people, apologies were made.... however to me totally insufficient response to standing outside in the rain for over an hour at midnight. On a day which should have been full of celebration, the irony is that after easing lockdown, they wanted to get back into the hotel and found themselves in a truly locked out situation. I do understand that COVID has a massive impact on staffing levels - however phones should be diverted and these kind of situation should not arise. Very dissatisfied mother who wanted to make a life time memory as a present.

We are just back from a fabulous one night stay. For the last 16 years Seckford Hall has been our bolt hole, somewhere we go to unwind and despite some essential maintenance works at the front and the spa being closed, we still had a fabulous time. Like other reviewers we got a great deal and stayed in our favourite room - no 36 the Granary. Having just re-opened it's doors and just a few guests, the hotel was running with a very tight crew just Anna who managed EVERYTHING front of house and the Chef. Important thing to note is you are currently required to pre-book for all meals (24 hrs notice) incl afternoon tea - completely understandable at this current time. We were so well looked after from the minute we arrived and our evening meal and breakfast were superb - all made with top quality produce and a lot of love! We have seen Seckford go through lots of ups and downs, but love the place so keep going back. With Anna as an example of the new management team - they are undoubtedly on the up again. Would highly recommend.

We have just returned from a two night stay at Seckford Hall, just for a little break away. We were already aware the spa facilities were not in use due to current government guidelines and so were not disappointed. We got a good deal for our stay through booking.com for £153 for two nights room only. Through the hotels own website it would have been £240. We have booked an afternoon tea for our arrival which was ok. I'll be honest I've had better. And at £18 per person I expected more. So I would give that a miss in the future knowing I can have way better elsewhere. We were one of the only couples in the hotel, I believe we only saw another two while we were there. The staff did very well, they were very accommodating and friendly considering they were doing everything... reception, bar tending, waitressing literally everything. I've seen a lot of reviews saying that the hotel is dated and needs an update - well it is a Tudor building and everything is in keeping with this. Our room was beautiful, I was really impressed with it. We had Room 2 which had its own little balcony with a table and chairs and lovely view of the grounds. Everything was clean and the bed more than comfortable. Best nights sleep I've had in a while. Our first morning we had booked breakfast, there was only us and another party of 4.... it was £15 each, took 45mins to prepare and when we did finally get it it was the wrong breakfast, we were hungry by this point and so ate it. It wasn't bad, but couldn't understand how our order could be wrong when catering for 6 people at a time..... That night we had a few drinks at the hotel and decided to give it another go with dinner in the 1530 restaurant and we were not disappointed it was absolutely beautiful highly recommend the steak and the pork belly, absolutely to die for. The morning of check out we decided to have a nice long lay in before we left as we never get one at home! Unfortunately the cleaners had arrived at 9am and made so much noise in the two rooms right next to us (shouting and talking, banging and crashing - not vacuuming) we decided to pack up and leave early as we couldn't relax. Even if you were up and about having a coffee or whatever it just wasn't what I expected and I haven't had that issue in other hotels either. We will give it another go later on in the year when the restrictions are lifted and we can use the spa. Just unfortunate there were a few little downers to it... ending on a brighter note however the two lovely ladies at reception I take my hat off to! And the room was a 10/10 for me

We have just left Seckford Hall after spending three days and two nights with friends post lockdown. This hotel is just not ready for visitors yet so please save your money and don't go. We spent £240 for two nights and were initially impressed driving up to the front of the hotel. Our room (Seckford room) looked immediately large and impressive until we realised that the shower didn't work at all, there was no hot tap or water for the sink, the coffee machine didn't work (there was a pod stuck in there probably since the covid lock down), the room had loads of cobwebs, only some of the electric sockets were working, the bath was very dirty and there were workmen on site which were noisy and very visible from our room. We reported the shower, as we really did want to take a shower and told that someone would come “tomorrow “ and look at it. When tomorrow came we were told that the shower needed a part that would be arriving “tomorrow “ which was the day we were leaving for home! The electricity didn't work at all in our friends room and an extension lead had to be run from the corridor so that they could watch tv or use anything electrical. How dangerous is that! The food we had there was good and Moira the waitress very entertaining but this was spoiled by everything else. We were offered free breakfast which is normally £10 extra but offered no refund or even another room to shower in. Maybe in six months time the housekeepers will be back and the facilities checked but we would have thought that the long absence of visitors would have been useful time to check that all was ready for guests.

Really needs some money spending. On arrival there were alot of staff and would have been nice to have been shown to our room. Bathroom was very mouldy. Room very tired looking. Food portions extremely small, my husband was starving. Pool area extremely grubby, including the inside of the pool. Hot tub not working. Changing rooms filthy and robes and towels all over the floor. Breakfast room was really dirty. So much food on the floor. I appreciate this is an old building but the general cleanliness and decoration needs to improve greatly. Would not recommend staying here.

I have been coming to "Seckford Hall" for over many many years. More than 20 years. My partner and I have ALWAYS been happy with the staff and the meals. Always been 1st Class. "Seckford Hall" is in beautiful surroundings. However, I like to know what is happening now?? "Seckford Hall" has gone down on ratings. This is so sad. The food was absolutely tastless. The amount served on the plate is a Joke. We had to ask for some bread, when that was served it came with no side plates or knives. No Butter but some oil instead?? The Dining room has always been a delight to have a meal, But now the Dining room is dark, no atmosphere. When then moved to the Lounge for Coffee as it is a lovely room to finish the evening with a nice coffee etc. The coffee arrived in cups. Where has the coffee pot gone and the milk/cream jug. The evening was disappointing as we have always liked and always recommended "Seckford Hall" to family & friends. However, I have to say the staff were helpful and friendly. Please Seckford Hall , Get back To The Service that we have all been used to in the past years.

Bit of a wow moment when the hotel hoves into view from the drive. However, that's where the moment ends. Front entrance/reception area is all wrong and not welcoming. Neither was the Receptionist. There's a large, underused lounge area to the left of the front door which should be used as Reception. The existing room could be used to expand the bar and make it brighter. The stair and corridor carpets are very 1970s pub. The “1530” restaurant is OK but quite dark. There's a much nicer area to eat next to it which doesn't seem to get used. Our room (24) was comfortable and had a small balcony and garden views. The bathroom was tiny, however, and we had a technical issue with the computer-controlled shower on our first morning which saw the intervention of both a cleaning lady and a maintenance man. The Bar Manager on our first night, Alan, was fantastic. Quietly confident, knew his stuff, polite and friendly. Unfortunately for us, Alan was only there for our first night. The next two were overseen by a rather frazzled lady who seemed put out by customers ordering drinks and even sighed and rolled her eyes when we came in at 9.30pm for a post-dinner drink. She had just cashed up and was planning on not doing any more work that evening. We felt very unwelcome and did not hang around. We didn't use the spa so cannot comment on it. Breakfast was always good and the staff on duty then are lovely. I'm sorry to say that we were not impressed with Seckford Hall. We wish we had stayed on longer in Norwich or chosen a different hotel in Suffolk.

"Disappointing birthday treat"

We organised an afternoon tea at Seckford Hall for a family member's birthday. The grounds are impressive and the building is beautiful. However, we arrived in an empty room, nobody welcomed us as we wondered around, and we had to find our own way to another empty area with a table set out for us. Apart from a a very nice man called Andrea, who chatted to us on our way out, we found the rest of the staff quite unfriendly, especially considering we had told them we were there for a special birthday. The food was bland to say the least (very few sandwiches, flavourless clotted cream...). My advice is to go there for a coffee or a beer, since it's such an impressive building, but do not bother to go for a meal or a celebration. We left feeling disappointed.

We booked a short break with our small cavalier King Charles Spaniel to relax and renew as well as enjoy the lovely countryside. We stayed in a junior suite, room 35 in the annex and it was perfect for us. Lovely decoration and a good lounge, excellent bathroom plus gorgeous bedroom, comfy bed and ensuite upstairs. Breakfast in the Garden room was very good with a splendid buffet table plus cooked dishes to order. Grounds are lovely and extensive and should you wish a Golf course is opposite the grounds and entrance. The staff team we met were attentive and friendly, we will be back in the better weather, loved the whole experience.

Despite advising staff on booking and at breakfast they managed to serve my daughter gluten food, which led to her being sick whilst visiting Sutton Hoo. To cap it off they charged us for a dinner we didn't have (gluten based so not suitable for her) and after removing it on check out, have now tried to sneak through a payment on my pre-authorisation a week later. I'm again in dispute with them over this ...

Sadly, we expected a 4* star service but the experience was more 2*. We waited 25 minutes for drinks with evening meal and the restaurant was half empty at the time . Food was ok bit cold second night and 40 minutes to arrive. In the my partner went to the bar himself. Had to ask for coffee 4 times at breakfast and then gave up. Spa was not fully working steam room broken all weekend. You will feel annoyed if you came for a spa weekend, especially which some guests did. The ladies changing rooms were filthy with sanitary towels left in loos and generally poor standard of hygiene. Went into ladies' toilet to find overfilled bins and no soap and shampoo as all empty or toilet tissue. I had to ask the staff and to get toilet paper and soap. I definitely would never recommend this hotel purely on terrible customer service which is a shame as the building is lovely but the rooms are suffocatingly small. You need to upgrade to the suite really which we did.

My children had paid for a night, dinner, and breakfast for a Xmas present for my wife and myself . we chose the valentine weekend for a bit of romance were i purchased the romantic Package For a further £99 ( champagne red roses and chocolates ) . The Champagne was in the room when we arrived But the bucket and stand was dirty and covered with cobwebs , the loft hatch was open i asked reception if this could be closed they said they would but did not ,.The lampshades were torn the bath panel was broken and you could cut yourself on it mould in the shower Mirror over the sink was broken on the bottom left corner and the silver had deteriorated along the bottom thick dust on a panel over the bed holes in the Net curtains dirty round the windows and holes in the plaster plus cracked walls . ordered our breakfast in the morning and had a nice 1 hour wait . Enough of complaining the dinner the night before was great This is a 4 star Hotel but you would not think it

"Valentines Weekend"

Stayed over Valentines weekend. What a romantic weekend, staff had gone to the trouble of putting chocolate hearts on the pillows and rose petals on the bed lovely surprise and thoughtful touch. Food was absolutely amazing and service was attentive but unobtrusive. Breakfast although busy was good, excellent buffet and hot food cooked to order. We will definitely be back. Thanks team Seckford for a great weekend.

"What a shame"

We visited this hotel to stay about ten years ago and were blown away by the quality of the cuisine and the beautiful decor, completely in sympathy with such a fine historic property. Sadly, today we nipped in for lunch and were so disappointed. The restaurant has obviously had some kind of makeover and was drab and colourless and the food was hopeless. After a fair old wait, over 30 mins, we were presented with a lasagne that was so dry round the edges it would have taken a chainsaw to cut and some battered monkfish with a batter about an inch thick and some thrice cooked chips that tasted of old oil. Also, a completely not fizzy lime and soda. I must mention the staff at this point who were most professional in offering a meal replacement and, as we were in a hurry by now, discounting the meal. The fault here lies with the chef who should pay more attention to what leaves his kitchen. Shame, as this is a most beautiful setting.
