Roker Hotel, BW Premier Collection

Have waited to write this review because I was hoping for a satisfactory response from the hotel, my daughter and I stayed for one night on Mother's Day, no option for dining or even room service in the evening and breakfast was a disaster as our orders were wrong despite there only being 3 tables of people in the restaurant, we have been offered 20% off a future stay but reimbursement of the breakfast would have been better received, sadly I won't return and this was my fourth stay!

We have just had our wedding here and cannot thank the staff enough. It was an absolutely perfect day from start to finish. The events organisers Tracy and Rebecca were always on hand to answer any queries and make sure things were well planned, and Richy our master or ceremonies on the day was fantastic, making sure we knew exactly what was happening and that everything ran like clockwork. The suite we stayed in was beautiful with stunning views and the venue overall was just perfect. I would highly recommend this as a wedding venue or just for an overnight stay. We will definitely be returning as newlyweds ❤️

Wonderful couple of days at this hotel. Staff are so friendly and helpful. Big shout out to Javier at the front desk. Seaview is amazing, rooms clean, food in the bar was lovely, and breakfast was great. Overall, it's a brilliant place to come and it's the staff that makes it so good!!!

Beautiful view from front executive room. Everyone friendly and very clean. Only two comments would be the hotel is just so hot. Heating in the eating area was full blast which was a bit uncomfortable and room was the same so at least we could turn off the radiator. Food lovely and great service but ended up moving our plates ourselves to another table as nobody came to clear after an hour of finishing. Other than that everything else was lovely

Just had my daughter's wedding here. Venue and rooms fantastic. We had a great stay from start to finish. From the wedding planner Tracy, who looked after our every need to our guy who I think was called Richie who looked after us in the ballroom. Richie and his staff were fantastic and did a great job. Front of house reception were so friendly and professional. Mix up with the rooms that were booked but they handled very well. It was all sorted in the end, special thanks to front of house manager javier (sorry if I've spelt that wrong). He couldn't do enough for us and it was really appreciated. Lastly rooms are beautiful, we stayed in 121, daughter in suite 125 they were perfect. This hotel is a fantastic venue we all felt the staff were attentive and ready to help. Definitely my recommendation to anyone to stay here.

Oh dear, I'll start with check in, very good. Pleasant receptionist. Very good first impression. We were told the directions to the room via the stair case. I wish I'd been told about the lift, it would have helped some one like me with shattered knees. Room was ok. On the back of the hotel. Not the biggest, not a lot of storage. It was however very clean. The bed was comfortable. Take your own pillows, today theirs are flat is an understatement. And yes, I did use the extra ones from a cupboard. Cheap and nasty is the best description. Noisiest toilet in the world. The bar was spot on. Reasonable prices, good selection. The Italian restaurant attached to the hotel is brilliant. We had the most fantastic dinner. The young lady serving us was superb. The real downer comes with breakfast. Yo be blunt, it's over priced and just not worth it. On day two, we ordered breakfast just didn't get it. We walked out after forty five minutes. On check out l complained, I was offered a fifteen pound refund. This is puzzling as breakfast was charged at twelve fifty each. I declined this. I was then offered an upgrade on my next stay. Now I'm Not sure I'm going to stay there again. A little presumptuous. All of this was conveyed to me via the receptionist. Now that's annoying. I asked for the person in charge, they passed messages via the agitated receptionist. Not good enough. When you're in that position, you come out and face the person who's complaining. If you read this bear it in mind. I won't name him but he knows who he is. . My refund was eventually given after a lengthy discussion. Would l stay there again. No. It's back to the grand given me. A real shame.

Lovely hotel. Great location. Rooms spacious and comfortable. Bed very big and very comfortable..soft pillows. Breakfast delicious. Lady doing breakfast was happy and was singing which was nice to hear. Staff were friendly and welcoming. Gin distillery good feature.

the room was poor to say the least bathroom was built across the window leaving a blind practically UNACCESSABLE. the room was dingey dark and dated, it needs bringing into this century the room was in a dungeon you had to go up stairs along a corridor and down stairs to get to a room on 1st floor. positive the breakfast was 10/10

Absolutely amazing hotel, we've opted for seaview this time and have to say it was breathtaking. The room (126) was spacious and comfortable, and only a slight problem was cupboard couldn't closed properly, cracked ceiling and bath The floors is very creaky and it looks like it needs redoing (woodworm eating) The food has been top notch, the staffs are very friendly, Breakfast could do with longer hours due to 6am till 9am which seems to be early, quite a few business people eating breakfast & leaving early The front balcony is ongoing refurbishment and seeing alot of woodworm getting removed and fresh wood being replaced. The radiator was constantly on during our 3 days stay and we couldn't turn it off so windows has to be opened during the day!

Loved our stay here. We had a lovely, well decorated and clean room, and gorgeous sea views. The room was perfect, we couldn't fault it. Jacuzzi bath was a hit with us, and so was the large and comfortable bed! The complimentary treats were also very kind. Every interaction we had with staff was great, superb communication and so friendly. The café looked lovely, but we only visited the bar/restaurant, which was everything you could want and need. The blue light card offer was very generous and much appreciated! We will definitely be back to stay again, after our faultless and relaxing break.

Excellent stay The Room was clean and tidy and the bed was very comfortable The Food was very good and a very good choice The Staff were warming and courteous nothing was a problem to them All in all it was a very pleasant experience and I would certainly visit again

We stayed Friday 9th feb. We had a lovely welcome and a quick check in. Our room was lovely, was a little smaller but was very cosy. Was just abit warm during the night but you can't please everyone with the temperature of a room. Very comfy bed and lovely biscuits! The hotel itself is lovely, with a great bar and restaurant area and breakfast the next day was fab. Really tasty and a very good selection. The best thing about the hotel was the service. The service at breakfast was lovely, and one of the staff members in particular was so happy and joyous. During our night out my boyfriend took an injury to his head. When we got back to the hotel and I realised it was worse then I thought I went to reception to ask for a first aid kit. The girl on the reception and the first aider came to the room to have a look and see what they could do to help. They then went to get the barman who was also a paramedic for another opinion and it turned out we had to go to a&e. They could not be more helpful and nicer about the situation and they were just so lovely, especially as my boyfriend was an annoying patient and just wanted another pint. When we got back from the hospital, the two guys were still on duty and checked in how he was, and the next day the same girl on reception asked after him too. They made the situation a lot easier and I am so grateful. Thankyou so much!

My wife is from Sunderland and as we were coming up to see her family we decided to stay at the Roker as the price for bed and breakfast was very good . Sitting in the restaurant having breakfast watching the sunrise was amazing.would love to have spent a few more days there.

As you walk in the hotel, everything looks nice and I was confident I had chosen a nice place to stay. Unfortunately on seeing the room, I felt mislead by the photos on booking.com. Our room was advertised as a standard double and appears much larger in photos and when we got there it looked like the small double rooms from the listing. It is run down and in need of some TLC. It also didn't help that there was scaffolding outside our window. Additionally, the TV in the room was also placed extremely high on the wall making it fairly uncomfortable to watch. Most frustratingly, we were also never forewarned that the onsite bar and restaurant also became some sort of Nightclub and would be blaring music until 23:30. And if we had been warned I would have asked for a room on the other side of the hotel as the bar is directly below the room and very noisy. There is also considerable noise from the hallway from other guests as there is a large gap under the door, which also lets the hall lighting flood the room. Later on we had the pleasure of hearing everything that went on in the room next door, apparently the walls must be paper thin. I don't need to hear what other guests are doing in their bathrooms etc. The mattress also feels old, very cheap and was wrapped in extremely itchy bedding. I would not recommend or return here. I've had a better night stay at a bed bug ridden room in Blackpool. All in all, an extremely uncomfortable and overpriced stay.

Lovely hotel with very nice rooms and sea views. We had two great rooms and we were all very impressed with the style. Nice bar food with a good atmosphere. Breakfast was very nice with a good selection. We will be back soon.

One night stay. Sea view room. Room was beautiful, comfortable and clean. Staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. Parking was free out the front, which was helpful too. The bar and restaurant were closed for a private function the night we were there but they looked lovely. We had plans out of the hotel though. Check in and check out was easy and email communication from the hotel was great in the run up to our stay. We will definitely be returning to this hotel.

Beautiful hotel right opposite the beach we had a lovley stay over Christmas and the staff there where so nice and polite, and the breakfast is amazing continental and all so full English was amazing definitely stop again

Lovely room, view was exceptional, reasonably priced. Only downside was that breakfast was not regularly replenished unless you asked a member of staff to sort. It got quite annoying having to ask for things that should've been readily available in quantity.

Stayed here for 2 night while visiting a family member who had been hospitalised. Got to my room, no phone signal for wi-fi at all, so I couldn't be contacted by family or the hospital should i need to leave urgently. Stayed in that room the first night as I arrived late. The next morning I spoke to the front desk, explained my situation and was told if i come back later they would sort out another room for me that should have wi-fi and it would be "absolutely no bother at all". I returned to the hotel as requested around 3pm, to be told they cant move me and I would just have to "put up with it". So this was a wasted 50min round trip back to the hotel for nothing in the end. Other than that theres many issues with the room. The walls are so thin you can here the snoring from the next room. The room is very long walk from the front desk, twice during my stay my keycard didnt work and id have to walk all the way back to get my card re-done, very annoying. The room itself is under a set of stairs, so from around 6am onwards you WILL be woken up. If the next room flush their toilet or use their shower the pluming is VERY loud, again you will be woken up if you like it or not. Unless you can get a room for £50 a night id would avoid this place. Even a very basic travelodge or Permier Inn is better. Theres nothing here worth paying the extra for. Avoid, go somewhere else. The lad behind the bar on an evening were very good, only positive.

My father and I stayed whilst visiting family, there was an issue with the steps down to our room and my father's mobility. Tom at reception was very understanding of the situation and promptly changed our room. Fantastic service from each member of staff, lovely breakfast too! Highly recommend

Love this hotel. Perfect seafront position and fantastic breakfast selection. The rooms are clean and modern. The only criticism I would make is that it is dimly lit. Found it a little gloomy in reception and corridors in particular. The bedroom also needed more lighting.

Had a lovely stay this week. Fantastic vfm. Booked through Groupon and for the price we couldn't complain. Breakfast was amazing with a huge choice. Only problem was and this is just a personal preference there were no fried eggs or fried bread which are essentials in a full English. Gin and Tonic was brilliant. Bar was brilliant and the staff were a credit. Roker promenade and the pier was outstanding and the Dolphins were showing. Will stay again.

We came to Roker Hotel for a few days break using a great Groupon deal. What a wonderful experience we had. Can't fault a thing. Very clean and tidy room. (104). Bed was very comfortable. We can't usually get much sleep in hotels but room was so lovely and bed so comfortable i was out for the count. Staff are exceptionally good. James the assistant bar manager was so brilliant, he alone made our stay extra special. Sally in the crubles tea room was amazing too. Service was quick and efficient whilst being lovely and happy. You can see the staff love their jobs which is a credit to the owners. We're definitely coming back again this year for another few days. The hotel food was lovely and served fresh and hot quickly. Restaurants are clean and the atmosphere and decoration is spot on. Rooms cleaned daily and all the extras you need topped up too. Management you ought to be proud of your lovely staff and hotel. Well appointed rooms, good solid breakfast, but some rooms can be a bit of a walk from reception, and the Lift is currently broken. Lots of parking, which felt secure. Italian restaurant attached and a great bar round off the stay nicely.

We had a standard twin room, comfortable enough but being on a corner in the building you could easily hear people going up and down the two corridors at night. Nice breakfast choice although even though we weren't late the stock of fruit , pastries , cheese and cold meats was not replenished as stock went low. Had items been replenished then breakfast would have been excellent. The location of hotel is good right on Roker beach and a 30 minute walk into town or there are bus stops opposite the hotel going into the main town centre. Free parking at front of hotel is limited but there is more available at rear.

Back from another mini break at the Roker Hotel. Beautiful clean room, lovely food and friendly staff. The cocktails were especially nice! Couldn't have wished for anything more. Thank you for making our stay a pleasant one.

Super hotel, everywhere clean and fresh. Room lovely and airy-window could be opened and no nasty air conditioning in the room-Thank goodess. Beds wre clen and soo comfy!11 The staff were so pleasent, polite and helpful. A credit to the hotel. Thankyou.

Check what room you're in before you arrive. Ours was up 3 sets of stairs, through 5 doors and down 4 sets of stairs. Horrendous with luggage. Room was tiny with a view of an iron staircase. We were told to call and check the room in future but unless you'd been there you would have no way of knowing to do that

Absolutely loved everything about this hotel and stay. Parking great, room lovely and spotlessly clean, ALL the staff were really friendly and chatty and nothing was too much trouble. Loved the bar area and restaurant. Great food choices and very reasonable. Would definitely return - loved the location right on the seafront and the terrace outside. Spot on! Italian restaurant next to the hotel also extremely good.

We booked to stay two nights, but after a disturbed 1st night caused by noisy guests next door, we spoke with Janine on reception who was most apologetic and gave us a fantastic upgrade for our 2nd night. All the staff are cheerful and very helpful. The breakfast buffet is superb with well cooked and presented foodserved with a smile, and the italian restaurant downstairs is excellent and good value. This wasn't our first stay at the Roker Hotel and it certainly won't be the last with the great location and easy walk into Sunderland city centre and the litter-free promenade.

We booked on a last minute deal and had no expectations, we just wanted somewhere to sleep to break up a very long drive. We were absolutely blown away! The property faces a gorgeous sandy beach, the local area is clean and well maintained. The hotel itself is modern and feels like a city centre standard in terms of decor. The room we had was on the smaller side but was all we needed, and for the price it was honestly a great deal. A view overlooking the sea was the time out we needed and drinks in the bar were served by genuine, friendly staff. My partner had really been struggling sleeping (unrelated to the room), we were starting to panic about the imminent 4 hour drive on no food and little sleep - yet the staff were amazing. They organised a breakfast for us room service style so we could get something before it finished and really went the extra mile for us. We felt taken care of, and their kindness from start to finish completely saved our trip. We continued our journey on a high vowing to return at the first chance we could. Thank you so much.

The staff at Roker recently catered for my mams wake in the Poetic License. The buffet was very good and the staff made sure guests were looked after. We had nothing to do as a family apart from reminisce with guests about our late mam. Many thanks for the good service.

I was really looking forward to a night on beach front, but from arrival this place was awful. It was so bad that it ended up being comical. The single disabled parking bay and ramp entrance was blocked by a car and no action was taken. Receptionist Tom v nice and sympathetic but ultimately only suggested using a different parking spot/entrance that left a disabled guest walking uphill and upstairs. Ditto to rooms - nightmare, with inadequate corridor and stair lighting to my distant grubby teeny room. Internet and tv in my room was broken, bathroom floor and shower were dirty/mouldy. I had to clean the tea cup and spoon in my room myself as both were filthy (pre-used?). Nice touch. Food was unavailabe at 4:30 pm, even though reception assured us it was serving! Oh, and there was an 'attack' lift door in reception. Saw it bite two people, refused to get in it myself ..... hope is fixed soon guys.

Reasonable but not as good as their website claims. Food kept warm and not perfect. Been to Washington today and Vinyl there was much superior. Best eggs benedict ever. Nice restaurant, just the food lets it down.

This was a wonderful hotel the staff were friendly the room was very comfortable and clean. We didn't use the room service but we did use the Poetic Licence for a few drinks. The staff were very friendly as well. It was a strange lay out to get to our room but it was well signposted and it was a bit of exercise for us. The hotel is on the sea front and we walked along the pier which was a lovely walk. We had a lovely breakfast and there were so many choices. All in all I would highly recommend this place and the People of Sunderland are very warm hearted and pleasant

I stay at many places with work but love coming back to Roker Best Western as I feel at home with great staff and great views there is a choice of the Poetic Licence and tne Italian restaurant to eat which are both great and they even make their own gin it's great

Stayed here last Friday with my Mrs. Fantastic from start to finish. Our room was excellent. Food and service out of this world. Special thanks to Kate for looking after us and making our stay amazing

Myself and my boyfriend stayed here for the weekend and had the most amazing experience! Staff were very attentive and both the room and food were outstanding, Couldn't recommend this enough. Amazing location too just on the sea front. Thank you to the staff for the amazing experience! x

Having booked the room to near the sea I would say this was one of the only pluses to the hotel. The establishment has no sort of soundproofing and you can hear EVERYTHING. After arriving from a 9.00pm flight we expected to check in and head straight to bed but we were greeted by the incredibly loud music from below (the bar) which we were not informed we would be staying above. And were very disappointed to find out. There was also a massive gap underneath out door which made me very uncomfortable as anyone could have come past and had a look underneath. The taps in the room screamed every time we turned them on. Meaning that in the evening that was an impossible task. Waking up was also not the most pleasant of experiences as once again we were not told that kegs for the bar were being delivered so we're rudely awaken at 7.30am by the clattering of them. Upon spending the first night there we left to go about our day luckily taking all of our things with us. I say luckily because when we arrived back in the evening our door was left open with a wedge underneath meaning that anyone could have had access to our room and our belongings. This is a massive safety issue. We also returned to the sound of the bar below. Very dissatisfying stay. We will not be returning.

worst experience I've ever had !!!! I was totally humiliated by the security of the hotel! yelling and pointing his finger at me in front of the receptionist at the hotel and he just stood there not saying a word. asked to speak with the manager of the hotel I was told there was no management around. just absurd !! booking customer service had to call the hotel so I could get the manager ( that I was told was not in) attention. Drove all the way from London with my wife to get humiliated at the hotel I was staying in. just absurd !!!!

Wow! Just had Christmas food and cocktails and I really can't fault the place. The staff just want you to enjoy yourself and leave happy. In gorgeous surroundings and beautiful views. I will always come here when their standards are soooo high.

Lovely 2 night stay at the hotel, very clean, lovely view , the food and service were all excellent. I would definitely recommend . The bar had a huge selection of daughter largers which were all reasonably priced . Breakfast was very nice as well

We had our Christmas party night at the Roker Hotel on Sat 17th December it was an absolutely fabulous night held in the six soldier suite which is a terrific venue I couldn't fault anything, from the staff greeting you on arrival, to the food, everyone in our party of 13 thoroughly enjoyed the 3 course meal, very tasty and red hot also last, but definitely not least, was the entertainment, the group were fabulous all our favourite Motown music especially the music by the Commitments,

My Wife and I stayed here in between Christmas and New year and we loved it from the moment we walked in till check out everything was great the Team were very friendly. Room very spacious breakfast was spot on we will definitely be back next year.

Spent the day here for a wedding reception, which started off awkwardly trying to get into the car park which was around the back of a single track lane helpfully blocked by someone... loading the hotel. Then it was a challenge to actually find the function room from the car park! Decor and interior of the room was actually pretty good, sadly other aspects weren't so good. The main issue was the apparent lack of leadership and/or training within the staff who were really inefficient when distributing the food. Food was passable but nothing special.

We spent Christmas at the hotel as a couple, started with a warm welcome from staff.The hotel has so much more to offer than a room.The Bar is stunning overlooking the sea. There is a fabulous restaurant. The rooms are individually stunning.we had a room with a view.Breakfast was buffet style with top quality ingredients used . Whilst looking at what the hotel offered they cater for weddings,functions etc.we are moving to Sunderland from the Midlands and shall be using the seafront bar and Restaurant as much as we can.

We had a one year old and three month old with us. They put is in what must've been the furthest room from reception, accessible only via a labyrinth of stairs and corridors. Completely unacceptable. The man on reception couldn't have cared any less. The key to the room didn't work initially, so an additional trip back and forth carrying a small child. Utterly ridiculous. Not to mention there was some rubbish from previous occupants in our room, and the “croissants” we had for breakfast were disgusting. Avoid like the plague if you have a family, or have any mobility issues. We could also feel the springs in the mattress so an uncomfortable night's sleep once we finally got all our bags to the room. The location is perfect, so it has the potential to be an ideal hotel but unfortunately fell so unbelievably far short of acceptable.

Comfortable room but it took some finding - up a flight of stairs then down two. Meals and service were good, except it took a while for waitress to realise I wanted a dessert. I went out of season but location is great.

The communal areas of this hotel are beautiful. And if you get a nice room with with a sea view I'm sure it was probably beautiful. But reception was scruffy and we got a very Luke warm welcome from a chap who clearly couldn't be bothered. The rooms are advertised as “Boutique rooms”. It's clear that at some point someone chose some nice colours, pictures and lights. But the fit and finish was terrible and the walls were bashed and scarred and our room was tatty and tired. The bathroom was very poorly tiled and unfinished. The wall between us and next door was paper thin and the mixture of the noise from the en suit water flow and our neighbour's snoring resulted in a poor nights sleep in a bed that had seen better years. I went for breakfast hoping for a recovery but the buffet was empty. It took 20 mins to start refilling but they did it 1 item at a time so I couldn't get a plate of hot food to eat at the same time. I ordered fresh eggs that took another 20 mins and it looked like they'd been fried for the full 20 mins. Such a disappointing experience.

I would highly recommend a visit to this place. Food is gorgeous, menu choices are extensive, as are the drinks. Attention to detail from the staff couldn't be better. Very enjoyable experience. The place has been refurbished to a high standard, it looks fabulous.

A lovely hotel, relaxing atmosphere and great bar with a fab selection of gins, made in the premises! Friendly staff, great breakfasts, right across the road from the beach, great view of Roker lighthouse. Comfortable rooms.

Excellent hotel on sea front location. Lovely sea view room (executive room) which was very plush. Everywhere furnished to high standard. Excellent afternoon tea and breakfast Staff friendly and helpful. Short taxi ride to Sunderland Empire theatre (costs about £6)

Room 114. Don't go anywhere near it. The temperature when we arrived one afternoon in late October must have been around 30 degrees even though the radiator was already off. I never managed to cool it all that much. The fan provided was tiny and sluggish. With my own fan (handily in the car) blasting away, the window open as far as it would go (not very far) and only the duvet cover I got a broken sleep. Until I woke in the middle of night and found my wife sleeping on the floor, with just a pillow and her nightie. She was no more uncomfortable than in the bed, which was so narrow that we had been jostling each other until she got fed up. I could only get out of the bed because I had levered it away from wall before retiring. Not even the good cooked breakfast was sufficient to redeem this room and elevate it to two stars.

We stayed over for my daughter's 16th birthday. The hotel is quirky and inviting. There were lots of interesting bits and bobs to catch the eye. The breakfast was delicious. The view out to sea from the tearoom was sublime and the bar had a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The hotel was special but not pretentious with just the right amount of glitz for our stay to feel like a real treat! Fabulous!

We stayed at the Roker Hotel in September for the first time, we enjoyed it that much we went back again this month. The rooms were fantastic, spacious, comfortable and up to date. Right on the seafront, the views were brilliant. We had breakfast which was all you could want and the restaurant was quaint and special. Well worth a visit.

Room ok had everything needed heating just right and bed comfortable except for the absolutely awful pillows they were so uncomfortable my suggestion would be to bin them and provide comfortable ones Bathroom large and towels clean and acceptable. Soap and shampoo ect provided Tea and coffee provided but for some reason this was hidden in the wardrobe and their was space for it to be on display on the table . Our room was on the top floor facing the back car park but was very quite .

The outside of the hotel is not inspiring and we were left wondering where the entrance was! Inside the decor is excellent. Our room, 145, was tremendous. Nautically themed, with a giant bed. The only thing that could be improved is the lighting from the bedside lights - they are very dim and you need the main chandelier light on to read. There was a bath and separate shower with fantastic water pressure. The view was to die for - overlooking the pier with Roker lighthouse at the end. There were two wonderful sunrises when we were there. Although we stayed mid week the breakfast was buffet style. Having read some negative reviews of the buffet breakfast we wondered what it would be like. The first morning it was absolutely lovely - everything was hot and fresh, and the hash browns a triumph with crunchy outsides and fluffy middles. As well as the usual hot breakfast items there was a selection of cheeses and meats. The second morning was not as good - the restaurant was less busy and presumably the food had been left standing. It was acceptable though, and the lovely singing waitress a delight! An enjoyable stay and we would certainly return. I would suggest if possible go for a premier room with a sea view. Sadly the hotel is up for sale. I really hope it is sold to owners who will continue to cherish the building.

My partner and I used a Groupon voucher to try out afternoon tea and spa facilities at the Grand Hotel, Roker. My partner has a serious allergy to onions so we decided to visit the hotel and check out the spa facilities well in advance and book our afternoon tea so that we could mention the food allergy. We were shown into the spa and very politely shown around the facilities. Then we met Adan in the restaraunt. He very carefully booked us in and was extremely careful to check out our booking requirements. We visited today, some weeks after booking. A very quiet Friday and not many people in the pool. We used the gym first and then the pool, jacuzzi sauna and steam room. After a long shower we later went to have tea and were greeted by Adan who immediately remembered us as the couple with specific food allergy requirements. Adan was careful to seat us at a table we might like best and suggested several tables we might like to sit at. Before and during tea we shared an excellent bottle of prosecco which tasted better than a lot of champagnes I've tasted. Adan served it beautifully in an ice bucket and we benefited from a half price "Friday prosecco deal". It was delicious! When seated the table looked elegant and the food served us was exquisite. We could not eat everything served as there was so much so, as we were about to leave, two large boxes were provided for us to bring the rest of our tea away. Just an ordinary day for us but Adan made it special. Such a courteous and polite man. Will definitely go back and spend longer there next time.

Stayed here on 28th September for a friend's wedding we got the last family room available which was room 135 we only booked this a few days prior and it was a lovely room with everything you could need with tea and coffee facilities and lovely biscuits along with toiletries and a massive bathroom. The room was nice and quiet and did take some finding. The staff that served us on the night of the wedding were fantastic and did a great job and everything was perfect I loved the canapes especially the chicken balls. The only let down was breakfast finishes at 9am which is too early when everywhere we've stayed at before always goes on until 10am. But overall it is a lovely hotel with plenty of parking and everywhere seems all new and refurbished.

“Average” is the best way to describe our stay. Very stringent 3pm check in! We arrived at 14:51, and were told we needed to come back to the reception desk at 15:00, as they wouldn't check us in before then. Our room was in the bowels of the hotel; up and down numerous flights of stairs. Thankfully, it was just my husband and me, both able-bodied; it would have been a nightmare, had we had our children with us or had any mobility issues. Last orders in the bar at 10pm and no residents bar. Granted, not an essential element of the trip but still disappointing to have got a taxi back to the hotel at 10:10, hoping to finish the evening with a drink in the hotel bar. Very average breakfast-not the cooking of it, but the produce unfortunately. We wouldn't stay again I'm sorry to say

This is the 2nd time we have stayed here. Both times were through Groupon deals. We paid £59 for a room with breakfast and a free gin & tonic each. This is truly amazing value for this modern, friendly, clean and comfortable hotel. I believe all the rooms have a sea view. All the staff are very friendly. The beds are very comfortable. The only downside as far as myself and my partner were concerned was that breakfast was 7am - 9am. We didn't make it for breakfast as we had over indulged in the hotel bar the previous night! Our fault I guess but I do think 9am is rather early. We will definitely be staying again though.

This was a special trip for me which the hotel knew about from my initial email. The room was on top of a noisy generator with a view of it and nothing else. The room was tiny. The bed was tiny and old. Lumpy mattress and old lumpy pillows. All of the doors slam shut so had constant noise. The worst hotel experience possible. Avoid.

This is truly amazing hotel. Unique in every way, decor, contemporary bedroom furnishing and extremely warm welcome from all staff. Our offer included a gin and tonic in the bar. What a fabulous surprise to find that the hotel has their own distillery and the gin menu was full of very unusual flavours. I chose strawberries and cream (so good I bought a bottle to take home). Everything in the room was spotless and comfy. Breakfast was excellent in content and presentation. How nice to be served at the table. I fully recommend Roker Hotel to anyone!

On the outside, the hotel doesn't look that impressive. Inside, however, the styling and decor is very special. We booked a suite and were overwhelmed by the room. The bathroom had a spa double bath and a separate shower (and an additional dressing room). The bedroom came with a maritime theme and included a brass and teak signalling lamp (the whole room beautifully styled and furnished).

Stayed for a weekend (Friday to Monday). Hotel situated right on the sea front between Sunderland and South Shields. We had a great room with a sea view opposite the lighthouse and the bed was enormous and comfortable. The breakfast on the Monday morning was cooked to order and excellent. However, the same could not be said of the Saturday and Sunday morning offering. This was a buffet style help yourself affair and not very good I'm afraid. If the breakfast had been the same as Monday morning, I'd have given 5 stars. However, for the location, staff and room, you'd be hard pushed to find better accommodation for the price we paid. Thanks for a great stay!

Attention to detail is required. Such as hot food and drink at breakfast and sausages fully cooked. Serviettes to be available. When serving sandwiches ask the customer if they want butter on them or not.

Great stay. We asked for a room upgrade and immediately got upgraded to a sea view room which was lovely. Clean room with a comfortable bed and very powerful shower. Restaurant and bar were really nice and fantastic food at a good price. The bedroom could do with some slight redecoration but apart from that has a really good stay and the staff were all friendly. Great location as 30 seconds from the beach and 20 min walk to sea burn to visit the stack and other local businesses. Recommend.

Stayed for one night with family group. Appreciate hotel was full and that it was a bank holiday but full DJ set on veranda with crowds of drunken people did not make the hotel attractive when we first parked up early afternoon. Easy check in and room allocation, my brother and his wife had to stay in a family room as this was the only room available when we booked, not sure how it makes sense to have a family room down 3 flights of stairs with no lift access! Room cleanliness was OK, we had executive room and the views were amazing but all fittings looked very worn. My son is a wheelchair user and we were aware that the hotel is not particularly disabled friendly due to it being an older building. This time however on returned from an evening out at the extremely late hour of 1045 we found the door to Let the be crumbs closed with no way of opening if. My sister informed reception who just said they would tell the someone when they started at 1100. We managed but found the same situation again the next morning when we sent for a walk. The disabled toilet is also up 2 steps and I appreciate that the hotel has ramps but it made life difficult. Biggest disappointment was breakfast, have stayed at this hotel in the past and remember the breakfast as excellent with breakfast cooked to order from a menu. This time the breakfast was self service with items in silver trays kept warm with tea lights. I don't eat a cooked breakfast and found the continental selection was very limited, no yoghurts and weetabix individually wrapped in cling film although . The rest of the party tried the cooked breakfast but were all very unimpressed, no choice of eggs, scrambled only and the items were barely warm. All commented that the sausages in particular tasted like a cheap supermarket brand and not worthy of a hotel breakfast. The whole breakfast felt cheap and nasty. Unfortunately we probably won't stay at this hotel again. Love the area and the location of the hotel but it needs an update and the breakfast needs a complete overhaul.

We stayed courtesy of a Groupon. We were given a reasonably small room right at the back of the hotel. It did the job although is a little dated. The bar area was lovely but the extensive cocktail menu was severely downgraded but the staff couldn't explain why. The free G+T on arrival was nice and their gin range was extensive. The location is beautiful and Roker and Seaburn beaches and seafronts have lots of bars and coffee shops. We didn't eat at The Roker but ate at the Italian called Antico next door which was super.

Stayed for 2 nights and found the room small and not very clean! Wardrobe falling apart, bed had a roll together mattress! (2 in the bed rolled to the middle). Bathroom good size but shower over bath riser rail broken so shower head had to be held up when used. Bath screen was useless as swung out when used as seal was wrong 1!! When ever anyone in the rooms above turned on a tap or used the toilet very loud noisy from the pipes which echoed around the room. Bar and breakfast staff very helpful and friendly, good atmosphere in the bar

Excellent stay. Staff were great and attentive. Would recommend and will revisit. Beaches were very nice and the main beach is a stones throw away from the hotel. Rooms were spacious enough and provided everything we needed.

I had a really good time apart from not being able to connect to the internet in my room but I did not let this spoil my time at the hotel and had plenty to go and see, outside the hotel. I would definately go again.

Located right on the sea front of Roker Beach, we booked a couple of nights just to blow away some cobwebs. Could not have picked a better place to do that. Staff were second to none, super polite and helpful. Room was quirky and cosy, beautifully decorated and presented. Free gin on arrival was a great bonus. Breakfast was an absolute triumph. As well as all the cereals, Danish pastries, croissants and fruit you would expect, there was an a la carte breakfast menu full of traditional English plus luxury egg and smoked salmon specialities. Felt ultra special. Bed was nice and low but with a thick deep mattress that cuddled us to sleep. Blissful, unforgettable trip. Benchmark hotel that others should aspire to.

What a night its 1.53 am not one second sleep in room 108 the noise from generator is unreal we have paid for 2 nights if I get my own way I will be in my own bed tomorrow night so much for a relaxing break I could kick myself for choosing this hotel

We booked a standard double room. What a shame the hotel overlooks the beach and the sea unfortunately our view was the recycling bin and beer barrels. Room was basic but clean. Pictures included shows lovely sea view and our unfortunate view. If I booked this hotel again would definitely check what view we were getting.

Beautiful rooms fantastic function room absolutely loved this place well worth a stay. Stayed for a wedding and from start to finish this place had it all. Will be going back very soon. Staff here are super friendly and very helpful and professional

Zac behind the bar is very helpful, though he didn't serve us he's very good with customers. Highly recommend Poetic Licence bar. Will look forward to seeing Xac again when he can serve. He's a credit to the bar.

Called in whilst on a family walk along the sea front. We planned on just having a drink but they have a new light bites menu during the week. So we ordered from that. Sat on the terrace, views were beautiful. I enjoyed the poetic license gin. It really was lovely. Great choice of drinks. Staff were friendly and polite. Planning on trying their afternoon teas in crumbs restaurant with my girlfriends

Stayed here for a business visit last week. Could not fault anything about the hotel and restaurant. Food, prices and hotel were excellant value. The staffs attention to detail and willingness to help out was top notch. Will definitely be back when in the area again.

Visited with my wife and sister in law. Less said about the experience would be the way to go but that wouldn't get across to anyone reading this just how bad it was. First disappointment was the menu. I would imagine a lot of folk having trouble picking something they fancied as this was not a menu with adequate varied choice. However we did manage to order 2 starters and 3 main courses. Imagine the surprise when after a wait every dish turned up at the same time. The waitress didn't realise that the starters were starters. So off she went with the main course back to the kitchen. When they were eventually served it was obvious that they had been taken back to the kitchen and kept hot. On 2 of the dishes the salad was warm and the skinny fries resembled charcoal sticks if there is such a thing. On the sandwich the stottie could have served as a doorstop and the burger on the other dish just looked revolting. This was too much so I told the waitress that those courses didn't border on being edible and that we had had enough and were leaving. She tacitly agreed with our opinion on the food and a refund was made for the food and a pina colada which when served was all over the table. At no time did any senior member of staff appear to address our concerns. Poor show all round. Anyone contemplating using this establishment beware. We made our way to the Promenade pub and what a difference.

Staff Excellent and bar and breakfast food and service were second to.none with a decent breakfast setting up each morning for the day ahead. Only downside to bar were the lack of snacks (happy fatty) and also still bottled water for the hot nights due to a broken radiator. The only downside for this hotel are the rooms. We booked and paid for a standard double room and were given the small double rooms. Not much difference but the extra room would have made it feel.less cramped and you also want what you pay for I suppose. Our room also.went straight out to a fire escape which meant people.would have come through our room in the event of an issue. Dated rooms however can't take away the staff friendliness and also the location and views when out on the front. Straight overlooking g the coast and plenty of decent bars and eaterys down the road. All in all it was tolerable for what was needed.

Absolutely fabulous hotel with excellent staff. Definitely pay the extra for a sea view, it's definitely worth it. Free parking and wi fi which is very good in this day and age. The room was very functional, maybe a slight downer was there were no drawers and the lighting was either too bright or very dim, no in-between but it would definitely not put us off staying again. Breakfast was good with excellent views again. We had a drink in the bar on all 3 nights and was very happy as it wasn't like a hotel bar but a proper pub and was busy with very nice people. We ate on there on the last evening and wasn't disappointed. A must is the Italian restaurant next door, which compliments the hotel. Fabulous dinner and beautiful surroundings. We couldn't recommend this hotel enough and will be pushing it to all our family and friends. Well done Roker Hotel we can't wait to come back as it is local for all surrounding areas and a great location for walks.

Just back from a relaxing two-day break b/b both days with my wife at the Roker Hotel, Sunderland with Best Western. First the website was excellent. I like websites that not only gives you a choice of dates but gives you the exact cost so you can book right away. Unlike some that want you to call to discuss details before a price is given. Checking in was no problem. We paid for an upgrade to an executive room which had a sea view. The room was clean and ready. Tip – Pay the extra for the sea view for it's worth it! The room could have done with a set of drawers instead of a settee which looked over nothing. It was a nice day when we arrived so we went for a walk along the pier to the lighthouse which was straight across the road! There is a stall selling ice cream for a pound – bargain! No need to book a breakfast time as plenty space. Breakfast was usual fare available – cereals, fruit, fried breakfast, toast, tea, coffees, juices etc with a hot breakfast as well. We went to the restaurant ‘Poetic License' for Dinner on both nights. Reasonable selection with a couple of vegetarian options. Drinks menu on the table which was good. Served at a good pace not rushed or too long. After dinner we went for a stroll along the promenade which was excellent. We went to the bar on both nights and it was quite busy which in our experience was quite unusual for a hotel bar. We still got a seat though with prices usual hotel rates. We decided to go on public transport around the area. Tip – get a Rover Ticket £7.70 which covers buses, the Shields Ferry, Metro and train back to Sunderland. We made good use of it! Overall an excellent two day break and would recommend it.

We got married at Let There Be Crumbs on 7th May 2022, the day was absolutely amazing and we are so glad we chose this venue for our special day! Pre-wedding Angela initially showed us round the venue and we had a general chat about how the day could work, she was really friendly and helpful and we loved the venue so we decided to book! We've had numerous chats and lots of email conversations with Angela since, she was very organised and helpful discussing options, suggesting options we hadn't thought of and ensuring every detail was clear for the staff working on the day. Venue/location After being let down by our previous venue we didn't think we would be able to find anything as good. However, let there be crumbs was so much better than our old venue would have been! The inside of crumbs is lovely with lots of quirky decorations, and is a great size for a small-medium sized wedding (there are bigger function rooms at the hotel as well). The location is great being on the beach, groom and best men had a walk on the beach the morning of the wedding and we saw some dolphins near the pier as well which was a lovely end to our stay. The venue being a hotel is really handy too, as guests can stay over rather than getting a taxi home, and alot of our guests chose to stay over (there was a special rate for wedding guests). There's a gin bar (poetic license) and Italian (antico) at the hotel so there's everything you need on your doorstep. On the day! All of the staff were fantastic, I can't fault a thing! Coming up to my room to let me know what would be happening regarding the ceremony timings. Showing us the wedding breakfast room to ensure we were happy with everything. We had the ceremony in the first section of let there be crumbs and this worked well for our number of guests. We then had a drinks reception and canapés and moved outside for photos. We got some lovely photos in front of the entrance of the hotel and the groom and I ventured onto the beach for some more photos which are lovely! The wedding breakfast was in the furthest section of let there be crumbs and this was again a nice size for the 20 guests we had, food was lovely. We then had the evening reception, DJ was tucked to the right hand side and this worked well, everyone was up dancing! Our 55 guests fit in the first section of crumbs leaving the furthest section for the buffet and our photo booth although there were also some free tables in this section! The buffet food was lovely, and they were happy to cater for our relatively large number of guests with dietary requirements! We also stayed in the bridal suite which was lovely and spacious with a whirlpool bath and a great view of the pier and sea! We couldn't have asked for anymore and thoroughly enjoyed our special day. We would recommend let there be crumbs and Roker Hotel as a great venue!

Our experience at this lovely hotel has been fabulous. We have stayed twice this year and planning to come back in July. Lovely friendly staff. Rooms very immaculate and huge in size. Food was amazing. Breakfast was very quick and staff always smiling. Cant wait to return.

Stayed for a few nights around two Sunderland fc matches. Good service, great bar, nice to be on seafront close to other bars and restaurants as well as nice walks. Small room but advertised as ‘cosy' and was comfortable.

We stayed for a few days on a friend's recommendation, and are so pleased that we did. The staff are very welcoming and there was nothing that was too much trouble. Evening meals were well cooked, plentiful and super tasty. Breakfast menu was very good, its nice to have your food cooked freshly, the poached eggs were cooked to perfection. We had afternoon tea in Let There Be Crumbs and again, superb. We had hoped to do the Gin Tasting Experience but we couldn't fit it in, so how lucky were we that Poetic License launched a new gin whilst we were there, a brilliant night was had by all, thanks everyone! You would think from this review that it's all about the food & drink - it's not, it is about the wonderful friendly staff and comfortable rooms that made our stay so wonderful. We enjoyed the area too visiting The National Glass Museum & St Peters Saxon Church, both very interesting & we'll worth a visit. We enjoyed the sculpture trail on the Riverside. We will be returning.

Booked as a last minute getaway. Hotel was lovely and staff amazing. Nothing was too much trouble, always smiling, happy and attentive. Breakfasts were delicious and nice selection on continental breakfast. Poached eggs were perfect! We visited crumbs, poetic license and the Italian restaurant throughout our stay and all were wonderful. We had a suite and views were stunning. The room was beautifully themed. Lovely touches including hamper of treats. Loved the little rock sweets too . The hotel was lovely and comfortable. Location was great for sightseeing locally or as a base for exploring further. We enjoyed a visit to Souter lighthouse and Marsden Bay just down the road although great walks and stuff to do in Roker and Seaburn. Would definitely recommend and we will be visiting again.

2 nights away with work and I stopped here. I hate hehe you're away with work and end up being cooped in the hotel with no where to go. Location was lovely. On the sea front. Parking was ok. Food in the poetic license bar and restaurant was really good, breakfast had options of order from menu and or cereals toast etc. One thing to note breakfast finishes at 9am a little early compared to other hotels. The room was unique with a nautical theme but rather dated. Wallpaper peeling off, wardrobe drawers that can't open due to size of room, and a mattress with a body shape in the middle. My morning of check out I was greeted with a silverfish bug in my bed when I was getting dressed! The reception didn't seem bothered about it when I informed them and showered them a photo as it went into the creases of the sheets. The Ringtons oat crumble biscuits were out of date, and the Netflix on the Tv still had someone's account logged in still on it. Overall, was ok for my business trip but I wouldn't recommend or stay here again.

Where to start... The hotel is perfectly placed between the city center and the seaside, with ample parking. The view of the Roker Pier is just idyllic, and there are a lot of lovely little cafes in the vicinity. The staff are a delight. Friendly, courteous, caring. The rooms are lovely, rustic but well appointed and airy. The bathrooms are lovely with a heated towel rail - perfect for the North East coast. The breakfast was perfect for all tastes and the in house bar was great. Fabulous.

We had tickets to the theatre in Sunderland and decided to make a day and night of it. We had an executive room overlooking the sea. The room was huge with everything we needed for our stay including a few treats ! We also had an excellent meal in the hotel bar before the show and back there for a drink after. After a good night's sleep we had a freshly cooked breakfast and a walk on the promenade before our departure. All of the staff were very friendly and attentive. We would certainly stay again and recommend it. It's a great location for exploring the north east coastline .

Lovely stay with my partner for a few days staff lovely and friendly and will go out there way to help in any way , the rooms are lovely and spacious , food was very impressive and a lovely collection of wines and beers, will definitely be back over the summer

We upgraded to an Executive room which had lovely sea views. Staff are very friendly & accommodating, full English breakfast was lovely, waiting staff fantastic. We had dinner in their restaurant, cooked beautifully. Would highly recommend

My family treated my husband and I to a Sunday Lunch meal at the Roker Hotel on Mothers day they decided to have the meal here as we have in fact stayed here on a previous occasion which was really lovely due to the brilliant location and sea views. Well we were not disappointed the welcome was lovely and the service excellent and the staff were brilliant with my 2 young grandchildren and the food was very good we all went for the sirloin of beef which was lovely. I am sure it wont be long until we have another stay here at the hotel now life seems to be going back to normal.

Me and the girlfriend popped in for an evening meal and yet again they have never let us down, the food was delicious and the service was great as always. And what finishes the night perfectly is there poetic licence gin strawberry and cream.

Stayed here for 2 nights, room quite small but clean and comfortable, bathroom was huge shower was quite powerful, staff were very pleasant. 2nd morning we went down for breakfast ordered a cooked breakfast I asked for scrambled egg received fried!! Partner asked for fried received poached, didn't want to fuss so just accepted this, bean's were inedible so dried out no juice at all!! they must have been on stove for hours that's how dry they were, fried egg had no yolk it was so overcooked I thought it was a joke rubber egg!!! Was just so put off I decided to give it a miss, waiter asked if everything was OK, explained the problems he offered to get it replaced to which we refused as we had already waited ages for breakfast to start with, I would not return to this hotel I expected better and this really spoilt the experience.

family stay over three nights, two rooms B&B. enjoyable sea-view rooms and good meals in excellent Italian restaurant. Good breakfasts. Very helpful and friendly staff. Will definitely stay again. Would like gym facilities and breakfasts served until 10am rather than 9am; otherwise very good.

Visited on a 2 night weekend break with my wife. From the outside the hotel does look it's age but that is no bad thing as it is in keeping with the other properties alongside and adds to it's charm. There is ample free parking either at the front of the hotel or in the overflow car park at the back. Once inside there is a warm welcome awaiting. We were quickly checked in and given room 145 which was of a very good size, well furnished and had the bonus of a nice sea view. Bathroom was very spacious also. Having unpacked we went down to the Poetic Licence bar which was already buzzing with people enjoying the very pleasant atmosphere within. Obviously the bar is very popular with local people as well as residents. After a comfortable nights' sleep we had a very nice breakfast on both mornings which is taken in the "Let there be Crumbs" restaurant. A small disappointment was the very small fresh fruit selection. Staff throughout were all very friendly and made you feel welcome. Hotel is very well situated right on the sea front. Check out was quick and easy. We will definitely return.

Honestly? If I hadn't been booked in for a work event that evening I may have told the taxi driver to take me back to the station. It doesn't look that much from the outside. But...inside it is a very pleasant surprise. Friendly staff, good food, the place is vast inside and the bedrooms were very comfortable. The bathroom was a bit basic but not a bad place at all for a night or two.

Staying for a friends birthday, room has a beautiful view as a positive however. Water running cold in bathroom, spoke to reception several times, no staff got back to ourselves. Refreshments in room requiring bottle opener, none available. Was told one would be sent up to room however 2 hours later still awaiting. Nice hamper in room on arrival which is a nice touch. Extremely poor customer service upon reporting problem. Unfortunately wouldn't recommend staying at this hotel

Excellent hotel, placed next to unspoiled beaches. From start to end all the staff were amazing, attentive service, nothing was too much trouble. Food was great in the restaurant, the afternoon tea and the Italian downstairs!!! We tried a number of different drinks, cocktails etc all spot on .. a great find and definitely worth a visit

Attended a tribute night- was entertaining! Plenty of seating and a lovely hotel. Very impressed overall. Checked in and they gave our room to another guest - remedied quite well. Room was fine (few grubby areas but reminded self it wasnt a 5* hotel). Plenty space and staff were lovely. Brekky was nice and the lady in charge (30th Jan) was lovely! The previous night we attended a tribute night. It was a laugh as in good company and a bargain for what we paid. Having such youmg bar staff leads to under knowledge of drinks and awareness at the bar - so small improvements could be made. Overall was a really pleasant stay, a right bargain for what we paid and would recommend

This hotel is fantastic looks over the sea and the harbour walls…..staff are so friendly nothing is a problem. The rooms are very comfortable tea/ coffee facilities great views. Food in the poetic restaurant is beautiful…..and if you like gin take your pick. You will not be disappointed…..

Visited the hotel with my daughter for a night away. From start to finish it was a lovely experience. The staff on reception Stephen and Janine were so friendly and helpful,as were the staff in the restaurants. As the lift wasn't working and I'm a lady of a certain age with a bad back I had to ask for a room change to the first floor. Stephen couldn't have been more understanding and quickly changed my room. We finished the night in the Italian restaurant after the gorgeous drinks at the bar.Lovely views for breakfast over the sea too. A super well run place where nothing is too much trouble. Thankyou.

I stayed here with my mum for a night away from day to day life. Lovely hotel which looks nothing from the outside but a beautiful view of the beach. Nice food and drinks in the Poetic License, the special beers and gins were a pleasant change from your usual options. Breakfast was delicious, we then had a walk on the beach before coming back for Tea and scones, the best scones we have tasted in a long time!! Overall a very pleasant stay and will probably return in the near future.

My husband and I were looking for a place to have scones and coffee and came across the Roker Hotel. It doesn't look much from the outside, but inside is lovely, warm, comforting and very friendly staff. We went to the coffee lounge which is left of the reception as you walk in, and all very reasonably priced too. Definitely going again.

We stayed here for 2 nights for MoTown Nye Party and I have to say it was absolutely fantastic, The singer was absolutely brilliant and has a good voice. 3 course meal was amazing and yummy! Starters - Mushroom soup could of been better with more soup - mains no complaints absolutely lovely and so is the lemon cheesecake. We stayed in room 104 and its a lovely room but seems to me that the floor is creaking badly so im thinking woodworms has eaten them so worth a look when they next do a room refurb, shower could also do better as it was lukewarm and not hot that id like it to be :) the location is fabulous with the seaview and the ammenties within the area. The breakfast is absolutely phenomenal , sausage and bacon was so tasty. the staff at RokerHotel has been amazing and friendly too :) Id recommend it to friends and family and will be back with a different room possibly with a seaview.

Stayed at The Roker Hotel as it is convenient for visiting family who live by Roker Park. It was a busy “party night' in the hotel & we were concerned that we would not get a good night's sleep/ that it would be noisy. However, it was warm, quiet & comfortable. Lots of choices for breakfast which was extremely good value for money. The cooked breakfast was a bit dry & I would ask for the fried egg to be well done the next time as it was a bit gloopy! Other family have stayed before & recommended the eggs Benedict for the next stay! Overall this was a good value, comfortable stay. The hotel is situated on the beach front & next to Roker Park - so we enjoyed a lovely walk the next morning.

We stayed in the business suite overlooking the sea front.The room was a well set out room and a good size.The king size oak bed was very comfortable and slept very well.The room had a large tv and spacious wardrobe which was all complimented by the large chandelier.We spent most of the night downstairs in the hotel bar which was very friendly and helpful.Also a bit of a history lesson about Grace the on-site 500l still

A few nights away with the hubby... what a lovely few nights away we had. Brilliant and friendly staff, lovely afternoon tea. The food in the bar was excellent and the selection for breakfast was great. Perks were coming home with a couple bottles of gin... the room had the most wonderful views... It was a very relaxing stay away from the children and a lovely surprise from my husband.

We stayed at the Hotel last night and it was amazing the Team were very friendly had a few drinks in the poetic bar. The view of the beach was spectacular, the breakfast was brilliant plenty of choice we waited for around 10 mins for our cooked breakfast but was well worth the wait we will be back.

We have stayed at the Roker multiple times and honestly we were a little let down by this stay. We where kept up till past midnight due to extremely loud music playing from what we where told by reception a Christmas party. When we called to ask when the party would end or the music would be slightly turned down we were told 'ohh we don't know late probebly' This wouldn't have been an issue if we where made aware of this during check in. As we didn't get to sleep late we where looking forward to a sleep in but no luck there as on both mornings we where there fire alarms went off not the best wake up call. To top it off what we presume must have been a member of the hotel staff actually unlocked and came in to our room stating they where told this room was empty. Again this wouldn't have been an issue if one of us wasn't in the process of getting dressed. Overall this wasn't the most pleasant stay we have had here. The staff are always very friendly but it might seem that the hotel isn't as organised as they could be.

Stayed here 4 nights while working in Sunderland. Comfortable clean rooms . Friendly and welcoming receptionists The breakfast area was lovely with views of The lighthouse and sunrise Great selection od cooked breakfasts Well cooked and well presented. Bar staff and breakfast staff were very friendly and professional Hotel facilities were ideal for the debrief in Let there be crumbs. Looking forward to trying the new menu in January Good selection of beers and spirits in Poetic License. Would stay there again

We have just spent 3 nights here and we couldn't find fault with any aspect of our stay. We upgraded to a suite and it was fantastic, very comfortable bed, plenty of room, well equipped bathroom and very clean. All the staff we encountered were very pleasant and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The breakfasts were very good, a wide selection of choices and plenty of options for seating in the dining room. The Italian restaurant has a great selection of food and all very competitively priced. All in all a great hotel and we will certainly be back. Highly recommended for value for money.

Great hotel, relaxed atmosphere with attentive staff. Super room overlooking the beach and pier. Lovely breakfasts. Limited restaurant menu at the moment but tasty all the same, and fabulous gin liqueurs! Have stayed before and will be back again soon!

Hotel was lovely, staff friendly and service in the bar and restaurant was good. Problem with no hot water not resolved very well so had a morning and evening where we had to have a cold shower. The hotel is a bit of a rabbit Warren so not very good for those of limited mobility or those with pushchairs

My sister and I had a overnighter at the Roker Hotel and it was a pleasure from start to finish. This hotel is immaculate, with exceptional cleaning throughout. Ample free car parking is available on site. Our rooms were on the front overlooking the sea where we had great views of the illuminations. The rooms were well- appointed with lots of little luxuries to make you feel at home. Comfy, welcoming beds too. We had a gin tasting booked in the lively hotel bar, which distills its own gin on the premises. Our gin guide was chatty and informative. She was obviously an enthusiast and gave us a good historical perspective on gin through the ages. Lots to sample too! Dinner was in the hotels Italian restaurant and our pizzas were delicious and beautifully cooked/presented. Breakfast the next day was hearty and cooked exactly to our liking with endless tea and coffee. Lots of choice available. But, the main selling point of this hotel is its staff. From front-of-house at reception, to the bar and waiting teams plus housekeeping, everyone…. And I do mean EVERYONE, was cheery, keen to assist and behind their masks, there were beaming smiles. We felt most welcome and we will certainly be back! Don't hesitate to book here!

A really enjoyable visit at the Roker Hotel. Staff were really friendly and very professional. Great choice of food and drinks. If you enjoy walking on the coast with great facilities for food & drink the Roker Hotel is an ideal base to enjoy it at its best.

Stayed at the Roker hotel for a wedding on 22nd October. Never again. What should have been a dream day for a couple who have been through so much, turned into a complete shambles. My first problem was the lay out of this hotel. Up stairs then downstairs very difficult for someone with mobility problems. We had a room over looking the sea. Initially the room looked ok. It became apparent that the design of the room was cumbersome and poorly lit. I don't know what effect they were hoping for with all the rope and rustic furniture but it didn't work for me. Clean lines with good lighting and places to plug items in. All lacking in this room . Dark and dingy with thick ropes around the lamps. Yuk. The reason we were staying was to attend the wedding of our Niece, what a fiasco that turned into. What should have been their happiest day turned into a comedy of errors suitable to a Fawlty Towers sketch. The wedding service was lovely and afterwards we were ushered into the bar area to wait for the room to be readied for the meal. Over 140 people in that room was unbearable. On enquiring regarding turning the Aircon on my husband was told it was broken!! We were held in this room for a long time, we couldn't understand what the hold up was. We even offered to help set the tables! I took my elderly mother in law to the disabled toilet and there was no toilet paper, and the hand dryer wasn't working. My husband said the mens toilets were disgusting. When we were served our meals it became clear that there weren't enough staff to serve efficiently. When it came to the speeches I struggled to hear what was being said as no microphone was given to the top table. We were seated right next to the top table ! The dessert was omitted as the evening guests had started to arrive!!! What was going on. …. We didn't see the cake being cut! Again what was going on ….. All in all it was a complete disaster. As a family we tried to make the best of it for the bride and groom but it was clear they were devastated. You had a duty of care to myself and all the guests at this wedding and you let us down. Large volume of guests in one small room with NO ventilation was a reading ground for Covid! And guess what I and other members of the family were pinged by track and trace on the Tuesday! I was thankfully negative. Dirty toilets … Understaffed Poor organization of the event I could go on…

The hotel is nicely positioned on the sea front in Sunderland. The car park was fine, no problem finding a space at all. We were given Room 144, for our 4 night stay. The king size bed was very low, & after an uncomfortable 1ST night on the very soft mattress, maintenance changed it for us. The room was exceedingly hot, the heating could not be turned down by guests, so maintenance sorted this too! The window was held open by a big piece of wood, which we never moved as we needed the fresh air. The net curtains were dirty & the room would benefit a good clean, but it was a nice room. The receptionist, Buffy, was really friendly & informative, & a credit to the hotel. The breakfast…..quite basic, the croissants were very spongy & I heard a few guests comments on them! My husband asked for porridge, followed by grilled tomatoes…..the porridge came, in a bowl, on a plate on which the tomatoes were arranged! We did enjoy the toasted tea cake & cream scone in Crumbs for a late lunch one day, & it seemed the afternoon teas were very popular too. We ate 3 times in the Italian attached to the hotel, & enjoyed all 3 evening meals. We are Best Western members, & some staff seemed unsure how to add the points, indeed 8 days after returning, we have still not had them added, I have emailed Best Western direct. One final point, we noticed that some staff wore masks & some did not, as did the guests. We are over 70 & feel safer wearing them as we move about the hotel. In the last 2 months, we have stayed at Best Western in Norwich, Louth & Llandudno & all 3 hotels had strict mask wearing policies for staff & guests alike, I wish this policy was implemented in the Roker.

Well what can I say, it's actually taken until today to find the right words to describe the wedding from hell, going upstairs to go downstairs was the start, after the wedding we were ushered out of the ballroom and kept in a sort of holding bay, round about 199 people with about a dozen seats, some disabled guests in the party had to stand for over three hours because the Roker hotel couldn't get things right, not even the table's were set up correctly, food coming out about 4 hours late and chicken so tough that it was inedible, waitresses offering wing to a young 15 year old girl on out table twice, and don't get me started on the desert, that just didn't even materialise, guest were left wondering what was happening, staff were very rude and abrupt when we asked what was going on, at 8 pm the night guests arrived and still no deserts. Then when wanting to go to the bathroom we were stopped by a very obnoxious man. I actually can't say anything good about this hotel. You have absolutely ruined the most important day of her life, I hope you have already reimbursed for this faulty towers hotel. What an absolute disgrace.

Excellent value for money stay. Opted for dinner bed and breakfast, with an executive double room with sea view after being upgraded from a standard through booking.com. Room was ideal for our stay and thankful we had a room at the front. Food is very good in Poetic Licence bar and breakfast is excellent quality. Not a huge selection if not having a cooked breakfast, but suited us. Plenty of parking round the back if no spaces at the front. The bar has a good selection of gins and beers and has a good ambience. Beers were excellent! All staff were welcoming and pleasant, in particular the young man serving breakfast. All in all an excellent birthday holiday. Will return!

Terrible stay from start to finish. Family room that was booked was up and down numerous flights of stairs which meant that we couldn't get the pram there for my 5 month old and was a long way for my 3 year old. It was also extremely hot and would not have been healthy to sleep in the room, this was due to the thermostat being broke and the only window in the room able to be opened an inch due to it being blocked by the fire escape stairs which is so ironic....safety issue! Other niggles with the room was how dark and dingy it was, the lock on the door was broke, the TV kept losing signal, the shower screen leaked...it goes on. Staff did manage to turn the radiator off but they were unable to offer any other room due to the hotel being fully booked. I told reception that they should not offer that family room to a family with small children as it was completely ridiculous, the staff did not seem to be bothered with my feedback. We were there for 2 nights as we were attending a wedding in the hotel, we did not think that the inconvenience experienced could get worse...it did! The wedding was also up and down numerous flights of stairs so once we got the pram there we felt like we couldn't leave as it was too much hassle. There was no baby change and no ventilation at all. I can't believe for a wedding venue there is no accessible or baby change facilities, totally unacceptable! The whole hotel is completely not fit for purpose and does not provide for a comfortable stay. There was no warning when I booked this stay (direct through the hotel) what the access (or lack of) would be like and there was no consideration given on room allocation either. I wont go into the problems other members of the party experienced which included someone entering their room in the middle of the night and poor breakfast service. the list is endless. I expected a lot more!

We got married at the Roker Hotel at the start of October 2021 after having to postpone our wedding from the previous year due to Covid. We first looked at the Roker Hotel after seeing the advertisements online for a wedding fair. After going to the fair we found that the venue offered exactly what we were looking for which was a family wedding. The girls who we spoke to were fantastic very knowledgeable you could tell that they knew what they were doing and they had loads of ideas for us to engage with. We decided to select the full package which was for the Six Soldiers Suite (the huge ball room), the meal plans that were on offer were very reasonable and the selection of food was also wide ranging for us to select. Again the staff at the hotel were fantastic from booking our wedding to sorting out the rooms and booking them for us every person who we had contact with were professional and courteous, they really gave the impression that they knew what they were doing and that reassured us. On the day of the wedding the staff (Chris and his team) were great they took care of everything, from the food to the setup of the room it was great and we had a nice surprise when they said that the celling lights would be put on for the evening, which totally changed the room from the daytime experience to the night time experience. All our guests loved the food especially the dessert everyone had a fantastic evening. As I also mentioned we also booked loads of rooms for our family and guests, the rooms were great and fantastic views from the front of the hotel I would recommend the Executive rooms if you stay well worth it. If you are looking for a magical wedding experience then I would 100% recommend the Roker Hotel it was truly perfect.

Good menu choice and super Poetic License gin distilled on the premises. Very friendly and accommodating staff, clean and comfortable quirky rooms. Lovely walk to the lighthouse and a good 30 minute walk into Sunderland via the harbour and marina.

Very good value groupon . Nice hotel on the seafront with parking. The room was small and very clean . However the view from our window was grim . Some very nice staff. Very good food . I would go again but only if I could be guaranteed a room on the front .

We stayed at the Roker Hotel in August of this year, we were meeting with family for an occasion and we stayed for three nights. While staying at the Roker we had an amazing time. We had a family room which was very spacious for the two of us and the breakfast in Let There Be Crumbs was Devine. We spent our nights in Poetic License where the amazing Tom was working, so helpful and very knowledgeable about the drinks he was making and giving ideas of drinks we might like. This gentleman went above and beyond for our family and we couldn't thank him enough! Well done Tom you're a credit to the company! We will be back for family get togethers in the future!

Amazing stay for our anniversary, upgraded to an amazing room/suite with sea view by the wonderful Steven, staff from reception to bar to breakfast and housekeeping were just fantastic, really couldn't have asked s for anymore during our stay, lovely message in the room and a fab welcome pack made us feel extremely special and our day/night was perfect. I've recently been to The Roker Hotel as a returning guest. Yet again an amazing stay due to fantastic staff. Clean rooms as always well stocked and comfortable. The service from staff was as ever warm and welcoming will always recommend The Roker.

We came to the roker for a family get together with family we haven't seen in a while! The food was immense! The Risotto was to die for, the burger was perfect and juicy, the stuffed chicken and the fish cakes too! We were not disappointed in the slightest! The room we stayed in was beautiful with a lovely sea view and painting on the wall! The bath was huge and could probably fit our whole family in it. We will definitely be coming here again when we are up this way

Had a wonderful stay at the roker hotel last weekend, Henry and Tom are wonderful in the bar and went above and beyond ;) Could not fault the place one bit and will definitely be returning for another stay.

We live in Newcastle but were going out with friends and they recommended the Roker, we weren't disappointed. The room we were in was lovely, very spacious, with good facilities and spacious bathroom with the all important bath. We stayed on for lunch on the Sunday which was especially lovely as the weather was fantastic. It is not a 5* star hotel, but I would say that the room we stayed in was better than a lot of 4*'s we have stayed in. It also offers very good value for money.

Lovely night away with the wife fantastic views Lovely food and very attentive staff from start to finish, rooms are lovely, and had a lovely walk along the sea front followed by a lovely night cap , will definitely be back .

After checking I went to my room and as I opened the door I found an opened bar of soap on the floor. I went for something to eat and on my return to my room my keycard didn't work, went down to reception and was told they had to move me as I was given the wrong room. My new room was situated so far from reception, up and down several sets of stairs, got woken at 5:30 by the bin man outside my window!!! I have stayed here a few times with work and I find it very loud, all door bang shut, rooms are never very clean with dust on top of the headboard and cracked floor tiles in nearly all the bathrooms. The food is quite nice in the evening though

Couldn't fault the hotel. It doesn't look anything special from the outside and it doesn't even say it's a Best Western, however once through the main doors your opinions change. The decor was very good and to our taste. All the staff from the cleaners to the receptionist, bar staff breakfast staff were great, very friendly and helpful. We just opted for a standard room and it was fine perfectly comfortable. We used the breakfast room, bar and dining room. The service, staff and food was excellent. We had a great enjoyable stay. Other thing to mention is that the hotel has parking to the front of the hotel and a secure car park at the rear. For us the location was great. Took us approx 40 minutes to walk to Sunderland town centre. The walk along the prom to the marina in one direction and upto further shops/restaurants in the other direction was great.

A little unsettled on arrival when front car park full, but did find the rear car park. Not an easy entry into the hotel from the rear if of limited mobility but received a very warm welcome when we got to reception. The check in was very smooth and friendly. A lot of steps up and down to find our room which was stunning! Had rearranged a previous booking & the receptionist had remembered me just from the phone conversation, had had to upgrade as no regular rooms available but the money was well spent as the executive room (Cinnamon) was amazing. Huge, comfortable bed, a sea view, robes which we didn't use and a bowl or hotel rock. Great shower & toiletries. The breakfast on the following morning was delicious even though their gas was off so hubby couldn't have a fried egg, lovely choice of both hot and cold items. We both thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be happy to rebook in future when we visit our son at Northumbria University. Wifi was patchy in the breakfast room but it was being looked into.

The hotel lived up to our expectations both in quality and staff friendliness will definitly book again if in the area . I have stayed in Best Western hotels before and found this one to be great location in agreat area

Arrived on the 16th September struggle to find our room we ended up in the basement room on arrival our room was filthy hair on the bedding ,floor and towels not cleaned went to asked to change rooms but they said they where full we got put in the suite 147 for the night lovely big room unfortunately this was poorly cleaned too holes in the carpet and curtains hair on the floor in the bathroom around the shower on the sofa and a leaflet under the cushion hair on the bedding too Moved our belongings back to our order room as was told house keeping was going to clean it arrived back at 4pm to a still filthy room which has not been cleaned ! The girl on reception did even as k was our room ok unfortunately it's not ! Will not book here again this was the first time we have stayed here will go back to The Marriott parking is an issue too here limited space out the front on this hotel Took over 30 photos to how how dirty the room is unfortunately I can only up load 10

Stayed here for our wedding night. Gorgeous room overlooking the sea & Roker Pier. Comfortable bed. Only concern was being unable to see out of the window due to the end of the bed being too high. Lovely breakfast. Fabulous staff. Highly recommend.

We held Our Wedding day/ Wedding breakfast at Let There Be Crumbs, The Roker Hotel, I am a wedding hair stylist and know endless options for weddings however, we love our coastline and this location is perfect for us. We were a Party of just 12 and Our Day was much more than we could have wished for, thanks to the fabulous staff at Let There Be Crumbs and the lovely Wedding Co-ordinations. Our wedding was 7/7/2021 just as some restrictions were lifting, the staff at The Roker/Let There Be Crumbs were outstanding in there service ensuring we had an amazing day to remember. We left our closed decor with the staff the night before with instructions of how we wanted the table dressed etc and they did not disappoint, they went above and beyond ensuring we were all happy and enjoying the day. Our wedding breakfast was on another level again far superior than we expected, everyone highly complimented the Chef the food was amazing for our special day, then later in the night our buffet we found had been upgraded also and was equally amazing and well appreciated along with the staff reserving a booth in poetic licence with its T.V. For us to watch the Euro Semi Finals ! As I said above and beyond they all made Our Micro post COVID wedding the most amazing day whitest ensuring we all felt safe. Included with the cost of our wedding was discount for guests to stay at the hotel and the Bridal Suite was included for us, breakfast in bed the next morning was a lovely touch. Cant recommend the Roker hotel enough.

I have stayed in most of the hotels & B&B's in and around Sunderland over the years, and this is without doubt the worst, when we went to the room on checkin we found plates of food strewn in the hallways, the smell from them was bad at best, we had paid for 2 rooms, the large suite was dirty and the bathroom had a smell in it that can only be described as putrid and remained for the whole stay, the second room wasn't even ready, and food plates outside that room too. The bar staff were racist and became disingenuous when challenged, which led to an embarrassing situation. The bar manager should be re-trained or sacked in my opinion. They has security on the doors which you'd think would offer a feeling of security, but the language out of them was disgraceful. Sadly not a very pleasant stay and certainly wont recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed one night at Roker Hotel it was lovely room, with a seaview. We did had a problem with the electrical sockets next to the table so I had to do my hair next to the door with no mirror. We had drinks in the bar what joined onto the hotel what was lovely, they even had Heineken zero on draft which pleased my husband. The breakfast was lovely too and the staff are super friendly.

Stayed for one night whilst attending a wedding at this Venue.. prompt checkin & a very friendly Gent on reception greeted us with a smile.. room was made available earlier than check in due to attending a wedding there & nothing more pleasing to me if you are met with a friendly smile as you arrive !! Room of a very generous size for 3 of us & breakfast selection was 10/10.

We booked a small basic room which seemed overpriced as in basement of hotel with loud plumbing noises from other rooms and no WiFi! Bigger rooms will be worth the extra cost. Was expecting more for the price from our booking. Great location though.

Great room, friendly staff, amazing sea view that anywhere else in the UK would cost a lost more money. I'm biased because I'm from Sunderland, but after living in the south for 20 years, I miss the sea. My child had a great time on the beach, but we weren't lucky enough to see the dolphins which have been visiting recently. Honestly, you can see dolphins in Sunderland!

I picked this hotel mainly because the pictures of the rooms looked so good, also the facilities seemed perfect with the bar and cafe on site. We arrived on Thursday afternoon and there was no parking available at the front of the hotel so I spoke to the receptionist who directed me to the parking at the rear of the property via a side street. The parking is secure so I was more than happy with that, the only problem being that you have to enter the hotel from the rear up a large flight of stairs and then through the bar Poetic License. Our room was clean and adequate for our needs. The beds weren't the comfiest and there was creaky floorboards throughout the hotel. We were told on arrival that breakfast the next day would be in Let there be Crumbs and that this cafe also was open for afternoon tea and meals should we prefer to eat in there rather than the bar. We had planned on having breakfast, driving over to Newcastle to do some shopping and them coming back for afternoon tea. Breakfast was cold. I had poached egg on toast. The toast was cold and the poached egs were solid. My husband had eggs benedict and that was cold too. When we got back from Newcastle there was a wedding being hosted in the cafe so we weren't able to have our afternoon tea as planned. The noise from the wedding went on until 12:45 am with people walking up and down the corridors until the early hours. We stayed in room 103 so we were right near to the main stairs. The second morning we had breakfast hoping for a better start to the day. We noted that all of the tables apart from one had dirty plates and food detritus on them. The hostess struggled to find us a clean table. The breakfast is either over subscribed or understaffed. We both opted for a full English which thankfully was hot. Its not the best breakfast we've had but we made do. I did note that the "continental" breakfast items weren't replenished freely, you had to ask a member of staff if you wanted something that wasn't on the table. The bar Poetic License could do with some more comfortable seating. I'm not sure who designed it but they must be really tall to be able to sit on the snug chairs comfortably. The seat base on them had me dangling my feet in the air like a toddler on a sofa. The staff whilst efficient, just didn't seem happy in their work. No smiles or pleasantries at all. I don't think we'd go back unfortunately.

Great staff always happy to help and always happy! especially in the restaurant/ breakfast area. Food was very good and the bar had a very good selection of drinks to offer including cocktails. Apart from the trek to our room everything was lovely. Seafront was extremely clean and beautiful beaches

We stayed here for 5 nights as a family of 3, we had an executive room with a Seaview and it was lovely. The staff were welcoming, friendly and really helpful. Breakfast was delicious, there wS toast, pastries and cereal on the buffet section and a menu full of hot options. We missed it a couple of days because it finished at 9 but they still offered to let us sit in or take something with us. We ate in poetic licence, the bar several nights, the food was really nice, good choice and you could tell it was fresh and not micro rubbish, staff were helpful and friendly and offered to carry us some drinks back to the room one night when they could see we had our hands full. The hotel is in a really good location with parking at front and back, the beach is literally across the road, not far from the park and a short walk into seaburn, cafes and restaurants close by. Ideal base to explore up and along the coast. There was a bit if a walk to our room up and down alot of stairs which wasn't a problem for us but could be for some, particularly carrying luggage, maybe mention if you have any walking difficulties. It was very warm in the hotel but to be expected in the summer, we used the fan provided and had the window open and we were fine. Good hairdryer provided and iron and ironing board on request. Would definitely go back

Rooms were small we were in a twin room beds had to be pushed together to walk around, broken tiles on bathroom floor. Noisy plumbing from room below could hear toilet, shower and bath. No bottled water as stated on in room leaflet. Dusty desk and bedside tables, mentioned to reception no action taken. Breakfast staff very friendly and attentive, food tasty and fresh. Fresh fruit should be covered as flies were landing on it. Nice bar area.

All you need at the end of a long cycle trip. Very good accommodation, room, staff, beer, food and bike storage - even managed a soak in the bath. It was good to see the hotel has been tidied up over the last 30 years, now looks good and up-to-date, even though the floors still slope - need to retain a bit of character?

Stayed in the Roker Hotel with my daughter as a last minute night away, can't complain one bit, staff were very friendly and tentative. Food and drinks were fab and room was lovely. Would definitely recommend this hotel for a lovely stay along the stunning coast.

Booked this hotel as it was near the end of the C2C ride. What a find. Really nice hotel, an amazing room, and friendly staff. Dinner was lovely from a varied menu and although the breakfast wasn't the largest I've eaten it was well presented and value for money. ( I have put that this is a mid-range hotel in the check box below, but it is a luxury hotel at a mid-range price)

We were very disappointed with the room we were allocated on arrival - especially as we were staying for a week. The duty manager was very responsive and although he could not change the room that day as the hotel was full, we were offered an immediate discount and were moved to a much nicer room the following day - with the assistance of the Head Housekeeper who was both helpful and charming. Dining room staff were very friendly and we had a very pleasant stay, helped by surprisingly good weather.

My second stay at The Roker...It's a decent hotel - not especially great and not especially bad but it does have the best restaurant staff you could ever ask for. I got a couple of names - Sally and Benji - and don't think I have ever met staff more enthusiastic and happy to make sure you enjoy a great breakfast. Those two people are exemplars of customer service with a smile but everyone in the restaurant works cheerfully and hard. To be fair, the bar staff were also helpful and accommodating too, but the restaurant people nailed it and make you smile with their infectious enthusiasm.

We booked this hotel based on the good review and the fant6location right on Roker seafront. We booked a family room and the reservation was made directly with the hotel on the phone. We booked a family room for 4 people. On arrival at the hotel we were informed that they had taken £50 from the total price of our bill. We thought it was a little strange that the price had gone down but collected our keys and made our way to the room. The room took forever to get to as we made our way up 2 flights of stairs through the length of the hotel and down 3 flights! We arrived at room and couldn't have been more disappointed. It was the only room right in the basement of the hotel and next to a fire escape. The room was large, big enough to sleep 4. However, it had a tiny window at one side of the room that was dirty and blocked by the fire escape stairs for the upper floors. The room was painted navy blue and smelled damp. The bedding on each of the beds was moist with the damp atmosphere in the room. It was clear it was painted navy blue to cover the damp stains! Hotel reception couldn't have been any less interested. We asked to move rooms and they couldn't accommodate. They were happy for us to return our key and leave!! Be very cautious if booking a family room at this hotel.

We only stayed 2 nights as we didn't know much about the area but we wished we had more time there Hotel was superb the staff and restaurants we couldn't fault We had a large Seaview room that had everything in it we needed We ate at the Poetic Restaurant and the Italian next door Antico which both were great. Roker and Seaburn are lovely seaside places definitely go back.

Charged to enquiry about a funeral wake. Called the event number and low and behold, I was billed 70p to ask them about making profit from an event. Not as expected. Please change your number and don't profit from funerals. Surely a normal number is in line with industry guidance?

We could not sleep all night due to rain leaking through the roof. When we complained the hotel was not interested. Checked out a day early and booked into another hotel. Do not stay here if you want customer service

We were very pleased with the hotel from checking in to check out .The staff were very friendly and cheerful and very helpful all round and made are stay a memorable experience . The twin room was very clean with plenty of room with a kettle ,tea and coffee . The beds were very comfy so had a great nights sleep . Great location with lovely views and handy for the bus .We have already booked to return

Cannot be faulted at all. Beautiful and extremely clean room with a spacious and even cleaner bathroom. Bed was very comfortable and a fan was provided for when the weather starts get hotter. Gorgeous drinks and food from the bar downstairs and the breakfast was absolutely unbelievable, we both had a Full English and thoroughly enjoyed it. Staff were very friendly and helpful especially the lovely woman on the front desk and the woman in the Let There Be Crumbs restaurant at breakfast. We will definitely be returning as soon as possible as this was an amazing 10/10 night away!!!

Over the past 10 years when we have visited Sunderland we have stayed at the Marriott, now the Grand but have often used Poetic Licence for which I wrote a review of 2017 which we really like. (My criticism of the smoking area and too loud music have been rectified and happy to give 4 stars). Thought we'd stay at the hotel for a change, not a good experience and going back to the Grand in future. First we didn't find the reception staff very welcoming in general and they didn't go the extra mile we are used to at the Grand. We asked for 2 keys but were given some technical excuse why we could have 2, which I translated as I can't be bothered. The tiny 'standard' room was right next to the kitchen exhaust pipe that howled like a jet engine. We asked to change to a quieter room. Again some technical excuse that although the hotel wasn't full as we were staying for 2 nights he couldn't move us. Again I translated as I can't be bothered. The bed was tiny and airless but to be fair, the noise finally went off at 10 pm'ish thank God. The breakfast was excellent and the staff friendly and professional - full marks for breakfast and Poetic Licence. Need to improve for the hotel.

The hotel is in a lovely location. We booked an executive room which was very nice, modern spacious and comfortable with a sew view. We booked dinner bed and breakfast. The only complaint we had was the evening meal wasn't the best. We had risotto and it's got the best worst I've ever tasted. Complained to staff and they were very apologetic and offered to cook us something else from the menu which we declined and they gave us some drinks too. The breakfast was lovely with good produce and plenty. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and welcoming. I would recommend this hotel but maybe not go for the dinner bed and breakfast as the main menu looked better than what we had to choose from.

I stayed for a few drinks with friends recently and was so happy with the service provided! Waitress Amber was so friendly and attentive to us, we will definitely be returning in the future. Very pleased with my visit here, everything seemed clean and hygienic following covid-19 procedures.

Went in today with a friend for lunch was served by the lovely Amber who gave us excellent service with a smile very polite and nothing to much trouble food was lovely aswell will be going back again.

Our waitress Amber, couldn't do enough to help us, her customer service skills are second to none, she was polite courteous and more than will to accommodate my request for a specific cocktail!! I'm a mother of 2 autistic children here with my husband, we never get a break this our our first in around ten years! Amber helped makes our arrival /first night special! She is an absolute credit to your company!

Excellent customer service offered by Sam. Always felt looked after at every visit. Fantastic views overlooking the sea, great location for staying over night or even just going there for food. Great value for the price paid.

Good location, and bar and cafe good too. However noisy plumbing and basement room resulted in a poor quality sleep experience. Decor in room unfinished. We asked to move rooms but none available. We were only staying one night so was not worth hassle of finding alternative accommodation. We are retuning to Roker in July but not staying here.

Went for lunch with family since the opening of the inside restaurant. Food was excellent as always - there was a great choice of meals - we could have afternoon tea as well as freshly prepared sandwiches and cakes. Weather was terrible though but was nice to see the waves crashing over the Roker pier.

Came to the Roker hotel last week and had drinks in there new marquee - They have introduced a new app which makes the ordering really easy and fast. We all choose come street food and the food was really tasty and hot. The weather got worse later in the day but as we were under the tent we were ok. If you decide to go for a drink dress accordingly - it can get very cold.

........... a great stay during the Coronavirus pandemic. The outside of the hotel could do with sprucing up but don't let that fool you - the inside is very nicely done. A friendly welcome from the male receptionist (who later also found me a fan as my room was pretty warm). The location is right on the sea front and I was lucky enough to have a room with a sea view (the outside of the windows could do with a clean though). Because of the pandemic I was unable to use the bar or restaurant but the menu looked inviting. A good number of parking spaces. My room (132) was nicely decorated with lovely touches like old prints and old lamps - a huge modern bathroom too. This hotel has been converted from a number of adjoining houses and, as such, is on various levels meaning there are a lot of steps up and down to the rooms - if you have any kind of mobility issue (or a lot of luggage) this could be a problem and I would suggest asking for a room on a "level" floor (there are some) - there is a lift but to get to my room I took the lift to the first floor and still had to negotiate 19 steps. I would definitely stay here again and would recommend.

Me and my girlfriend we ordered an afternoon tea and it was displayed and pick lovely for us to pick up and the food was delicious as always! Can't wait for it to open back up so we can enjoy the atmosphere in the place again.

Stayed here for 3 nights in February as was working in the local area. The staff were really helpful and friendly and tried their best to help despite the difficulties of Covid-19. The superior rooms were very nice. I would definitely stay here again, hopefully when the bar is open!

We collected an afternoon tea at the beginning of the Month and were really impressed with the quality of the food and cakes. We ordered for 3 and we were all impressed with the portions and quality of the cakes especially. We normally stay at the hotel but due to the current lockdown were unable to but decided on a nice walk along the Sunderland pier and to collect the Afternoon teas.

Alway faultless the Afternoon tea from the Roker hotel, we have grown accustom of having this now in lockdown or whatever tier we are in. We hope the hotel will open soon so we are able to visit the fanastic hotel. We miss the relaxing views from Let there be Crumbs and the attentive staff.

We have just finished off a fantastic afternoon tea we had delivered to our home. The cakes were beautiful and very well presented. Our scones were perfectly cooked and my husband was impressed with the sandwiches. I would highly recommend the takeaway offering especially during lockdown as it Brought a nice treat to our day.

Roker was much nicer than expected. Spectacular sea views from room. Great access to beaches - just across the road. Breakfasts good. Choice of restaurants to eat in. Staff on breakfasts very friendly and helpful.

Fabulous place to stay, with the staff being so friendly and helpful, the room were very clean and spacious, shame I couldn't get a signal for the TV, but the WIFI was very strong. Fabulous view from the windows in the bar of the sea front, you could also sit outside and take in the sea air, the bar area was spacious with plenty of seats, with a good choice of beers, wines and cocktails, massive car park to the front and rear of the hotel

Went for drinks in the bar with some friends. The bar manager couldn't have been more helpful, service was excellent with a great atmosphere for a weekend. Music was just right after it was changed up. Definitely worth a visit to the bar and I will happily recommend it to anyone wanting to go!

Excellent food and drink and more importantly excellent service by Ethan and Amber. Nice chilled atmosphere, following the Covid rules. Been here quite a few times now and will definitly return thanks to the staff.

Visited here today for a birthday celebration, we had gins, cocktails, food from the small plates menu and the normal menu. The food was delicious as were the drinks especially the Long Island iced tea. The service was second to none, Amber and Ethan served us and they were terrific. Would highly recommend a visit here.

What a wonderful location and day out . This was made by 3 things ? Wonderful wife of 28 years , food and amazing service by the young and wonderful Amber . Amber has been so influential with food and drinks menu for such a young person . At front of house she was wonderful and it's been a pleasure to dine at the hotel . We really enjoyed our stay here. The hotel was clean, comfortable and in a fantastic location. The decorations in our sea view room were a little kitschy, but fun. The breakfast was good and there was a nice variety in the restaurant/bar in terms of food. The staff were great. I could have done without 6 hours of club music on the Saturday afternoon (from 4pm!) but it ended at 10pm, so we were still able to enjoy a drink in the bar later on.

The view of the harbor from our room was fantastic. We enjoyed the lovely sunrise in the morning. We happened to be in our sea view room for the afternoon and a DJ at the Poetic License bar below our room played loud music on their outdoor enclosed patio from 4 pm-10:00 pm. It was a long time to feel the bass radiate through your room. Also, there was a 1+ inch gap under our hotel room door which allowed the light from the hallway to light up our room through the night. The was no WiFi in our room. You had to go to the lobby In order to get WiFi.

A mixed experience. Stayed for three nights in total, visiting with local friends. It's a lovely hotel in itself - really liked the room and the seaview was pretty. The bathroom was clean and we were given the option of having housekeeping when we required it. Breakfast was great - eating from a brunch menu that was varied enough and the service was good. However, there were issues with the stay. Our room was situated over the Italian restaurant on the premises, and we found that in the evening it attracted a large number of cars and men who stood around shouting and laughing late into the night - not great when you have to leave the window open to let some air in... The WiFi in the room was an absolute joke - and this becomes a bit of an issue when the Smart TV that it's in the room is dependent on it. We found that our phones and the TV failed to connect on the first night, and when we called the front desk the level of disinterest was laughable. Despite promises that the issue would be fixed the following day, nothing happened. Best not to offer a TV that has Netflix, Amazon Prime etc if you can't offer the connectivity to support it. Another issue was evening meals at the hotel - whilst it was a busy period due to the 'Eat Out to Help Out' offer, nowhere on the hotel literature or on the website of the hotel did it state that you could book for the Poetic License bar restaurant. When we enquired about a table we were laughed out of the restaurant by what I assume is the Maitre D, who seemed quite pleased with themselves that they couldn't seat us. I was very happy not to spend any money in the hotel bar after that. We had a lovely time in Sunderland and will definitely be back, buy we're unlikely to book the Roker Hotel again.

Just had a lovely couple of days at Roker Park. It's in a great location right on the sea front. The staff were friendly and efficient. The bedroom was well appointed and comfortable. We used the Soul food restaurant , the menu was varied and the food was plentiful and tasty. The staff were very friendly. We sampled the gin made on the premises and on the second night tried the rum cocktail which was lovely. Breakfast was gorgeous, table service by a lovely waitress , the bacon and sausage were second to none. If there was one thing that let the hotel down it was the exterior, which on closer inspection was in need of a little TLC..

Booked what I thought would be a relaxing night away for my birthday on a Sunday Savour deal which included £50 to spend on food/drinks and is widely visible on Best Western site and also on my email confirmation and showed both of these to reception. Unfortunately rude blonde lady on reception decided she knew better than site and email and told me it was only £40, and she'd worked here a long time so just knew, she even brought out a manager to continue argument. She eventually conceded that I would have to be given the deal I'd booked but manager still not happy and said he was contacting Best Western! Appalling welcome! Given keys to room 116- avoid this at all costs, the window catch is broken and room faces the very loud air con/ generator - back to reception to change room, given a better position but fairly basic room with sea view but this all took around 45 minutes, probably the worst check in anywhere! Food on the evening and breakfast both good but with limited choice, staff were all lovely (the stars in review are for them), especially the lady serving breakfast who is always so efficient and helpful, hopefully she can give reception a few tips. I've stayed her several times before, usually for events but won't be back after this, customers should not have to argue to receive the deal they have proved they have booked.

I stayed here with my girlfriend recently as we were looking for a hotel to go and have food and drinks and stay over. There are no issues with the bar, bar staff, drinks or food. They're all of good quality. However we stayed in room 104 (not sure if all rooms are like this), but it was damaged, poorly decorated, and EXTREMELY HOT. The hotel must already know that room is hot as there was already a fan in there which we had on all night and made no difference. There's no air con either. It was an uncomfortable stay, we didn't sleep much and we certainly didn't get the break and rest we needed from home. The weather outside was cold and rainy so it wasn't as if it was just a hot stuffy day. On departure we checked out and spoke to a rude blonde lady on reception who wasn't very helpful at all. Needless to say we won't be going back. We could have booked a travelodge for half the price or gone slightly further down the seafront for a similar price. The experience left us really annoyed and frustrated. In summary go here for food and drinks but do not stay over here, find somewhere else. Very poor!!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay last week. We prepaid for dinner, bed and breakfast and thought it was tremendous value at under £90 for both of us. We booked a standard room and were allocated a cosy double at the rear of the hotel. As other reviewers have said these rooms are reached by going up the stairs to the first floor and then descending between 3 and 6 flights. If you have mobility issues then I would recommend speaking to the hotel ahead of your arrival as these rooms will not be suitable. There was some confusion in the evening about where we should sit and what was included but once this was cleared up we had a lovely meal and the standard of the food was high. After dinner we enjoyed a drink on the terrace as the weather was so good. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order but there was quite a wait after ordering. The service was good and the room was clean. There was plenty of hand sanitises although we were surprised that the waiting staff were not wearing any PPE. We also noted that some of the paper menus were put back in the rack rather than being disposed of.

From the moment we arrived at hotel till we left our experience at Roker hotel was excellent, we checked in went for afternoon which was amazing, the room was beautiful very spacious with views of the light house, the bar had a singer on which was good and do a range of the most fantastic gins!!! In the morning staff were amazing at breakfast very professional and breakfast was lovely, would definitely go back.. thank you to all the staff

So we came to Sunderland to visit family. We had booked the Roker as from the photos it looks lovely. We arrived at the hotel and went to park in the car park at the front of the hotel to find there where no spaces, everyone just at the bar was parked there so there where no spaces for us who where staying at the hotel. So we had to park in the back car park, then lug all our luggage up steep stairs and through a packed bar which was great after a 6 hour drive. We checked in and got told our room was up the stairs through the door. Went through the door lugged our luggage up more stairs, then through 4/5 doors to more stairs which we now had to go down. This is a family room and it's so far away with no offer of help and a tired child. Got into the room and it was so dark, opened the curtains to see our room was looking over a tin roof with a view of brick walls too, lovely. The room it's self was very basic and dark and had a musky smell and was so hot. Went into the bathroom and it definitely had not had a deep clean which I was expecting due to the global pandemic. So I went to the receptionist to explain the room was not up to standards especially when they charge £120 a night for this travel lodge room to basically be told that it was tough luck. I think the only rooms that are cared about are the ones over looking the sea which are the ones you see on their website. They don't show the substandard travel lodge rooms there. Sat in the outdoor area of the bar with family and mini buses filled with people ready to party turning up. Then it came to 7.30 and one of the bouncers (yes a hotel bar with bouncers) told us we had to leave the hotel bar as we had children with us. I have paid for a family room and would like to be with family in the hotel bar which is a totally normal thing to do on a mini break. If you have family room expect children in the hotel bar. I think the hotel needs to decide if it's a family hotel or a party venue. Luckily the lovely bouncer had found us a table hidden in a separate room so we didn't have to go sit in the dark dingey rooms. Only thing I'd say is the bar area is pretty and John the bouncer is lovely. Other than that AVOID unless you like noise, rude staff and smelly dingey rooms. Also the food was terrible but we had to order food or we couldn't sit inside.

Stopped at this hotel last night, great stay, the staff were brilliant, and friendly. The hotel its self is very smart as are the rooms. Will definitely return. The location is great.Thanks for a great stay.

We were visiting family in the area and having visited Poetic License( the really lovely bar/restaurant in the hotel) on a previous visit decided to stay at The Roker. I was a little nervous about staying in a hotel in the current climate but I needn't have been. The hotel has put into place appropriate measures to ensure safety of staff and guests. Lots of hand sanitiser stations and a carefully written letter for guests explaining the procedures in place. Our room was delightful and the view looking out to sea was unbeatable. Bed was super comfortable, and bonus of a bath and a separate shower in the large bathroom. The room was spacious and tastefully decorated. They have had to remove soft furnishings etc but honestly we didn't notice. We had a fantastic lunch in Poetic License and if you're a gin fan like me you are in for a treat. This is a lovely hotel in a beautiful location. We stayed for 2 nights and wished it could have been longer.

Since the ease of lockdown I thought I would treat the girlfriend to some afternoon tea at the hotel and enjoy the scenery. The food was nice and the staff very pleasant and the new measures that have been put in place made my visit feel safe and secure. Will definitely return again.

Visited the Poetic licence bar with friends, great atmosphere and food. e ordered from the new menu which was a single use menu, covid procedures are very good - social distancing signs in all areas and also the toilets which i think is great. Will be back again- stayed with family in Sunderland

Visited the Roker hotel on Saturday, First class night out with the husband. Had a great executive room with sea views, bathroom was very large and spacious. Breakfast was served plated ands to your table - had a great walk along the pier to finish the stay

Not much parking due to tables placed in parking bays . Very noisy at night if you have a sea view. Executive rooms are just standard no exec about them so save your money on upgrade. Food is basic menu and not cheap. Breakfast was to order and long wait and not great quality. Seaburn hotel is much better in all aspects.

Visit to cafe/ bar. Sat outside on nice warm dat under the covered area.Sad to say that a visit was not good enough in current circumstances. No hand sanitizer, no staff to show us where to sit or what regulations are in place. Fair enough, a big board with rules written on was at the bar but hardly the same as waiter/ waitress. At no time was I offered a menu, I had to go find someone at the bar, when I did, the waitress, who seemed to be in charge, swept passed me very closely. I was quite surprised how relaxed she was. I ended up clearing and cleaning my own table. Was disappointed that my sandwich was served on a scruffy looking piece of wood. Seemed like too little staff for too many customers and waiting time was long. Only saw one member of staff with face mask. One girl did eventually come out and take glasses but didn't clean table.

They put us in the very last room. Room 141 was down four flights of stairs at the very back basement of the hotel with one small window that couldn't be opened as there was a fire escape in the way. The dead pigeon on the fire escape was a treat!! The noise pipework was terrible, I could hear every single noise from the room above, every noise!!! The hotel bar is a launching point for the locals starting their big night out. It's a party hotel. It's in a stunning location right on the seafront, the decor in the bar areas is lovely. The photos of the rooms on the website look stunning, but if you choose to put me in the worse room for decor,location, noise etc expect a bad review. We stayed out as long as possible and left first thing in the morning just to minimise the amount of time spent in the dank smelly room. The only saving grace was that the staff were all lovely and efficient.

I decided to try out the afternoon tea at the roker hotel which turned out to be a nice day the food was lovely and the cakes and scones were fresh and tasty will be going back for more and will definitely bring the family up when the hotel opens back up!

Visited in January to book a party, service at reception was slow. One of the waiters showed us around the party area we were wanting to book. He was far more polite than the reception staff and in the basis of how nice he was we booked. Unfortunately the party has been cancelled due to covid but we have been waiting months for the deposit refund. The hotel tell us the staff are on furlough but the events guys are responding to emails and the hotel is open for takeaway so I am guessing they have staff working (or how do suppliers get paid!) Whole thing is a bit of a joke. I won't be going back. Highly recommend speaking to your card issuers if you have problems getting money back from these people!

Just received an amazing afternoon tea for 2 from the Roker hotel, its such a nice treat in the current climate that we are in and was a great treat for myself and the wife. The cakes were very nice and the scones were baked just right.

I booked my husband and I into The Roker to celebrate his birthday. This was January of this year. I booked for the gin experience with a meal and bed and breakfast. The evening meal was excellent I think it was the head waiter you saw us to our table, he asked if we would like our gins we said could we wait till after our meal. This he said was no trouble. After our meal we went into the lounge and had another gin. Everything was spot on for my husband's birthday treat. I had been to The Roker on a number of times for the Christmas party nights with the girls, we always book for bed and breakfast. We this must speak for it's self how good the hotel is.

We stayed at Roker Beach Hotel for one night, and we really liked the room and the vintage vibes. The room was clean and of good size, but the bathroom sink had two water tabs (and coming from somewhere that don't have separate water tabs for cold and hot water we found them tricky to operate). Our room had also a sea view, but unfortunately, it was mostly distracted by the parking space. In the beginning, it was confusing to navigate to the corridors of the hotel, especially when holding luggage and had to descend half a floor using the stairs after having ascended a floor with the elevator. The breakfast was good, and the café seemed to have good options for an afternoon break. The location of the hotel was perfect opposite the beach, and although we didn't have a car, the distance from the closest metro station was (kind of) walkable. Lastly, we tried to have dinner at the Italian restaurant of the hotel, but because we didn't have a reservation we had to wait for a long time and even after we were seated the service was not great.

Brilliant informative afternoon learning about all the different types of Gin and the correct mixers to go with them. Nathan was very knowledgable and answered all our random questions! Gins were amazing and would recommend:)

Nathan was a very hospitable and friendly host, the range of gins surprised me for such a small distllery. There was much hilarity at my request for the cost of a full batch. Great value and a fantastic surprise for my wife's birthday.

This was a brilliant afternoon. Very informative. Got to try different gins with different tonics. Answered all our questions. The gins and liqueurs are very different. Love the Fireside and all of the liqueurs. Nathan was brilliant.

Had a great time at the gin experience at Roker Hotel. Nathan (who led us through the experience) was very knowledgeable about the gins on offer and was able to answer any questions (however stupid or random)! 9 gins to try...each with their own unique tastes. Would definitely recommend this...we went as a group to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday.

Nathan was very professional and very knowledgeable about the gin collection, for each gin he knew about each individual flavour inside out and was very interactive with us as a group. Was a great insight to what gins on offer and the mixers too.

This is my second visit to this lovely hotel; with great views over the beach and nearby harbour/lighthouse. I have never been allocated a sea front view so cant comment on those rooms. My room was small but nicely decorated, bathroom was ok maybe could be up graded a touch. Overall a good stay, decent food and a good breakfast.

We went on a gin getaway 1 night away for a date night. On arrival checkin was easy , we were given a time slot for our 3 course meal. Which was in 20 minutes so a quick drop bag off in room . It was very busy as a kids party on ! For STArTER choice between ham hock (chunk of ham and egg pie garnish) , veg soup was meant to come with parsnip chips but they were missing , and a salmon dish for last choice . MAIN beef chunks with mash and carrots Or boiled fish with fritters Or a butternut squash option Dessert cheesecake , profiteroles or a brûlée's. 2 gins included - we got strawberry & cream and a sasperlla . My only complaint was the waiter stood close by waiting for us to finish our food which made me feel uncomfortable & rushed. Our Room Was beautiful and huge bed , big square 2 seater jacuzzi bath . With sea view no complaints on room was lovely didn't want to leave ! Breakfast include. Buffet style - cooked breakfast, toast and jams , fruit and small conitinental selection . All nice . We were meant to get a bottle bubbly which was included in the package but we didn't receive that . I didn't notice until on way home . But all in all had a lovely Date night away

We booked a groupon two night stay with dinner and it was excellent value. We were kindly upgraded to room 130 (Cinnamon) as it was a belated anniversary stay. The room was excellent, newly decorated with a huge comfy bed. The dinner on our first night was in Poetic Licence the adjoining bar. The food was very good, great presentation but unfortunately the beef was very dry, however the cod was excellent. We enjoyed all three courses and a complimentary gin too! Breakfast in Crumbs was very good. We chose to eat early both mornings so each time had a lovely window table. The full English was excellent particularly the delicious sausage, however the fruit salad looked a bit tired both mornings. We very much enjoyed our stay at The Roker Hotel and certainly would return as it was excellent value and great customer service...thank you.

Stayed from 22nd to 24th February. Super hotel full of character, very good restaurant and staff. Plenty of parking. Brews own gin and beer, masses of choice. Unfortunately our bedrooms heating system had failed, we were provided with a fan heater but were eventually relocated to another room. Janine was very helpful including moving our clothes etc., to the other room. Super breakfast on last day. All places have problems but it is how they overcome them as to how they are judged. We shall definitely return.

We travelled as a family and had 2 rooms booked we had already upgraded one of the rooms and on arrival my daughter also decided to upgrade hers Well worth the £30 for upgrade rooms they were very tastefully decorated, comfortable with a sea view, all staff we spoke to were helpful and friendly and the breakfast was good although finishing at 9am I thought was too early. Great location for the beach.

We stayed at the Roker hotel while up for a football game. Excellent location. We were given, as requested, a room with access to lift, to ensure this we did book an executive room, but rewarded with sea view anyway. The staff were very helpful & friendly. When I struggled to use the coffee machine, I was brought a kettle as I wasn't accompanying my partner to the football. We found a GBG pub, The Harbour View in easy reach of the hotel. Then I tried the gins in Poetic Licence. On the Saturday we enjoyed a meal at Antico, the adjoining Italian restaurant. There was plenty of choice at breakfast. Only regretted the weather was too cold & windy to enjoy a drink in the terrace. As someone else mentioned couldn't get radiator in bathroom to work, but warm enough. A lovely weekend stay!

First time visiting the Roker, we were blown away with the hotel - never been to a hotel that makes it own gin, the bar staff were so informative on the gins and we tried several of them. There was some great decor in the hotel, bar and the bedrooms were very spacious and ticked all the boxes. Breakfast was served to us wait there was a nice buffet display also.

My daughter and her partner were married at the Roker Hotel this week. The staff were lovely and helpful, the Executive room I stayed in was tastefully decorated and everyone in the party had a great time. In the run up to the Big Day, all of our questions were answered quickly and nothing was too much trouble, even to the extent that my daughter's biggest "ask" was that she wanted her 4 beloved Chihuahuas to be part of the ceremony and then stay overnight with them - they said yes, which was so wonderful

We stayed here on a great deal which included a 2 course meal, gin on arrival, overnight stay and breakfast. The room was lovely and the nautical theme fits perfectly, the food was delicious and the gins are amazing! We had a lovely walk along the seafront and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Thank you.

Stayed here for one night on the 15th Feb 2020 with my wife,the hotel is very nice and in a good location on the seafront,the room we stayed in was at the back of the hotel and was small,the bed had seen its day and needs replacing this caused my wife and myself to have broken sleep topped off with water dripping in through the roof (light fitting) at 05:15.Apart from that we would go back.

Stayed here on the Gin Getaway package which was given to us as a christmas present. We were upgraded to an executive room overlooking the sea - the room was very nice and spacious. Our meal on the evening was excellent - the gin infused menu was very good and the complimentary gins that went with it were excellent - Breakfast was a buffet but was very well presented

Several of us stayed for one night for a work trip. We found the rooms pleasant and clean, the staff were helpful and polite and the bar was really great for a coffee and doing some work. We also had a drink before dinner and the home made gin is fantastic. Only one slight flaw was a lumpy bed... needs a new mattress in think, but one side was fine. On the whole great value and ready for work well rested after a good night's sleep and a decent breakfast.

Simple. Don't stay here. We gave this establishment the benefit of the doubt given some of the reviews. I'm sat in 'Poetic License' (the bar) as I write this review. The environment is a nice place to be. Room 115 has no hot water. Room heating control is by TRV and it seems rather sensitive, all or nothing. It's noisy, but I don't mind that, some will hate it. Food in 'Poetic License' was rather dire. Do not have the 'Hanging Tender Beef Kebab'. Tough as old boots, uncooked onion, courgette and peppers. My other half had the 'Lemon and Chilli chicken flatbread' which was given a reasonable nod. Cutlery not supplied but told 'it's coming' (not available to punters). For the money spent, you will get better value elsewhere. We come to Sunderland occasionally and fancied something by the sea, instead of the sterile new hotels. Go to the 'Hilton Garden Inn' and taxi to nightlife. Sterile but better. Not sure what to expect at breakfast tomorrow but today was poor. Had a great walk along Roker beach. No more to say.

Great place / well recommend the gin tasting have learnt so much about different gins / tonics. Had a great Saturday afternoon learning all about guns and the tonics that go with them. Would recommend this to anybody who wishes to learn about different gins

Awesome. Gin masterclass with Nathan. Great experience. Loads of local guns to try with expert knowledge. Great atmosphere. Well worth the price. Afterwards go downstairs for a an Italian meal. Just do it..!!

Had an amazing time. Rooms spotless. Beds so comfortable. Staff so friendly and helpful anything you needed someone was there to help. Can't wait to come back. See you all again soon. Would recommend to everyone.

We enjoyed a wonderful evening at Roker Hotel, a lovely seafront location. Well worth paying the small price for an upgrade for a sea view room. (About £30) Staff were all very helpful and welcoming. We really enjoyed our delicious dinner in Poetic License, small plates were great for lunch time. They have their own gin distillery and a fantastic range of gins, of which we enjoyed a few! We plan to go back and book one of the gin masterclasses which looked great!

Absolutely brilliant gin class tonight with Nathan! Learnt so much more than I thought I knew about gin and the mixers. Also really interesting to hear about the whole ethos of Poetic License! Highly recommended!!

We were staying over in a group from work as a belated Christmas celebration. My husband and I choose to upgrade to a suite which was very nice, comfortable and spacious. Others in the group said that their rooms were small but well equipped. We all enjoyed gins in the bar and then a very nice meal in the restaurant. The staff were pleasant and very accommodating with some dietary requirements in the group. We asked for a late checkout which we got without extra charge so enjoyed a very exhilarating walk on the beach after breakfast.

Another quality stay we were here to meet friends the team were very welcoming and friendly. The food was great we had a great catch up with friends we will be back for another visit very soon thanks again to the Team

Booked this last minute with my partner. On arrival hotel was nicely decorated, the staff were very friendly and welcoming but unfortunately that's about all I have to say good about this hotel. The room was okay, clean and did the job. However the bed was the most uncomfortable thing Iv ever slept on. Could count the springs in the mattress, absolutely awful. The hot water was cold, So couldn't even have a shower or bath. The music downstairs blasted through the place til about 1am. So if your wanting somewhere relaxing or somewhere you actually need some sleep for the next day, this is definitely not the place for you. Then just when you thank god that the music has stopped at 1am, you get all the mortal drunk guests coming back to their rooms but standing in the hallway for an hour solid shouting, screaming and arguing with each other. Would not recommend or even think about coming back for a second. Possibly one of the worst nights I have had in a hotel.

Stayed here for one night with the husband. The public areas are great and the food on the evening was amazing. Location great for a long sea front walk Our room 137 up stairs them down two flights of stairs in the basement was sub standard. Pokey room, lumpy flat pillows, uncomfortable mattress. Most definitely not 4****. Breakfast nothing special and service very slack. Wasn't asked on check out about our stay. I wouldn't stay here again if in the area.

Visited Sunderland in November with a friend. Booked The Roker Hotel through hotels.com as it seen very reasonable and we were on a tight budget. The hotel is on a perfect sea front location and not to far from the city centre. We arrived at the hotel quite late after check in due to travelling 7 hours. Upon arriving we were both pretty impressed with the hotel. One bonus was free parking. When checking in and giving my name the gentlemen on reception told me that booking.com had just been on the phone to check if there was room for me at the hotel. I wasn't sure if he was joking or not. I showed him my email confirmation which shows I had booked a room with breakfast. He said he would have to try and squeeze me in. As you can imagine after the long day travelling this was not what I needed to happen. He found us a room for the same price but without breakfast. After asking if he could provide breakfast after seeing my confirmation and fulfil my booking. It was a plain flat NO. In the end we had to go without breakfast as we were on a strict tight budget so had to search for a cheaper alternative the following morning. Disappointing to say the least. After making a complaint to the hotel via email aswell as hotels.com after my visit. I am still yet to receive a response after almost 3 months direct from the hotel. I have received an offer of free breakfast or an upgraded room on my next stay through hotels.com. No offer has been made direct. This would be useful if I was planning on staying in Sunderland again. So this is a gesture that cannot be made.

We sadly only booked for one night and loved the nautical decor and the funky feel of the place . Rooms are small but for £30 you can upgrade to a suite which we had. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist who exceeded all our needs . We enjoyed the variety of drinks available and had an excellent evening meal in the bar, again with exceptional service . Our room was lovely and overlooked the sea with a very comfortable bed and great decor. Breakfast was served in the restaurant and had everything on the menu that was expected. The staff are a credit to the place and nothing was too much trouble . We would highly recommend this hotel and will definitely be returning.

Nicely located hotel on the sea front with plenty of parking. However Best Western or whoever first designed this hotel did so without thinking of comfort. The layout of the hotel is weird with various levels to get to rooms. The rooms themselves need a full revamp. The decor is new but the rooms are cramped compared to other hotels in the area. Bathrooms Defo need updating.

Fantastic place, nice room, great friendly service albeit a few more serving behind the bar at busy times would not go amiss. The fact it has its own Gin distillery sets it out from the crowd, work your way through the menu and you'll appreciate the tipple!

We popped in here for a meal on weds evening as we have been in here before ‘should of known what to expect after last time' we sat down and ordered our meal which to be fair was ok, after that we sat at the bar and had a couple of more drinks then decided to have a couple of Irish whiskeys which we normally do at the end of an evening, but unfortunately the bar tender didn't know how to make them even saying he did! So after the 2nd attempt we said not to bother so we just had a couple of drinks instead. We then thought we would have a desert to share so as my husband asked the bar tender for afters he turned and said ‘the guys not here'????? So I said ‘what do you mean' to my husband and he told me what he had said, I went up to the bar and asked if we could order dessert and asked what he meant about the guy not being there which I took as the chef must of been on a break but no he actually turned round and said he didn't understand what my husband meant when asked for afters!!!! Really! He only comes from Plymouth not another country. Really guys your staff were miserable not very helpful and need retraining in dealing with customers. I spoke to the manager ‘the guy who couldn't make Irish coffee' he was quite understanding and did ask if there was anything he could do for us, we didn't want anything just some common sense and manners

Stayed here for one night on business in December 2019. I understand the hotel was full, which may have been why I was allocated a room at the back of beyond - a very meandering route through corridors and stairways to reach it. Room was nicely decorated, if a little care-worn (bathroom sealant peeling etc). Bed was very small - certainly only a double rather than a King or Superking. However, the main downside was the extraordinarily loud plumbing. I was woken from 4am onwards by what sounded like a fireman's hose rushing with high pressure water in the corner of my room. This went on - repeatedly - leaving me unable to get back to sleep. If that wasn't sufficient, two members of staff then decided to have a very loud conversation about how full the hotel was at 7am right outside my door (which had a 1cm gap at the bottom). All in all, not a great night's sleep - hence the poor review. A shame because the bars and cafe look great, and there had clearly been some thought put into the seaside/nautical decor. Checked out and wasn't asked how my stay was... Won't be back.

Booked a Gin getaway with groupon for myself and my sister . Our room was very spacious and modern- we were allocated a sea facing room and the views of the Roker pier the next morning are breathtaking- breakfast was very good and the staff are a credit,

The location, on the sea front, looking out to Roker Pier and lighthouse, is lovely. The reception area and bar are nice and welcoming. Our room was a bit of a walk up and then downstairs to the back of the hotel and adjacent to a delivery road where trucks periodically passed down. The room was clean but relatively small, with a smallish en suite bathroom. The shower was very good - hot water and decent water pressure. WiFi was free in the room. Breakfast was very good. Table service, with a wide choice of hot food. There was also a small selection of cereals and meat cuts. Staff were friendly and seemed happy in their work. Very good value...

We booked a Groupon deal for a Gin Getaway for myself and the wife, have to say we were very impressed with the hotel and the standard of the bedroom. We opted for a the Gin getaway menu which is made with all of the gins that they make on site - the food was very good - credit to the chef. We are looking to return with friends in the new year.

We went to The Roker on Saturday 14th December for our girls Xmas treat. We also spend the night their. Rooms were very nice. Beds very comfortable. The party night was also excellent. Food was spot on, entertainment was good. The breakfast was good. Buffet style which suits us all. When we come to book out we overhead two people complaining about nearly everything from party night to rooms. Well I must say we had no problems whatsoever. I have booked for a gin night for my husband and me. We booked has it will be his birthday on the 30th January and we will be going their on the Friday (booked room again) so looking forward to that.

We went to the Roker for a friend's 50th; it was a Christmas party night. The room looked beautiful and we had a great night with our friends but the food was absolutely shocking. I had the beef which for several.of us was inedible - I could not get my knife through it and I sawed enthusiastically for some time. They changed it for turkey which was beyond dry despite being completely covered in gravy when it was given to me - I could barely see any food under it. Dessert was Christmas pudding that unfortunately was really difficult to get a spoon through. I ended up eating nothing. The staff were far from customer friendly. Very disappointing.

Had a dinner bed and breakfast stay last week. We thoroughly enjoyed it and found it good value for money. The room was rather small, however, but not too cramped. We had a problem with a lack of hot water too, but it did warm up eventually. The evening meal was delicious, well worth waiting for. There was a good selection of gin, distilled on site! Breakfast was good too. The staff were all friendly and helpful and quickly sorted out any issues we had. Would like a sea view room next time. We are definitely hoping to return.

We were on a works Christmas Party lovely welcome went to bar very disappointed drinks selection well there wasn't much of a selection apart from there own poetic licence gin I'm a massive gin fan and would rather have more of a choice. Room decorated beautiful food was the best we have all had cleared all our plates. But unfortunately the room was so cold all night never warmed up so they saved on the heating and made loads of profit on there own gin because had nothing else shame!

I ended up in a "fire escape" room which meant that a key card was left outside the room in a picture frame, for anyone to use in case of fire. Basically, any random could have just got the key and come in to my room in the night, fire or not. I was a lone female in the room. I'm pretty tough but at 4am when I was still jumping at every noise outside the room I realised I should have asked to change rooms. More to the point though is why any hotel manager thinks this is acceptable? The door double lock had been disabled because of this and obviously no chain so no real security at all. This is crazy, I have never been in hotel where they invite people to use a spare key to enter someone else's room! Total lack of care and safeguarding for their guests. Also the room smelt of drains and there was old hair and grey gunk coming out of the plug hole. Not nice. Only superficially clean. Room 128 if anyone is staying and needs to change. I would have brought this up with reception at check out if anyone had bothered to ask how my stay had been but they didn't. The staff at breakfast were lovely but that's the only good thing I can say.

Friday last we arranged to meet up with a friend we had not seen for a few months just to chew the cud.Ample free parking space is a strong point with the Roker Hotel and has been for years now since we first went there years ago. At 10.30 we were the first to sit down we took our seat next to the windows in the "Poetic License" area overlooking the great (free) sea views of Roker and Seaburn. Other guests who had probably stayed overnight sauntered in around 15 minutes after we arrived and began sitting down for I expect coffees as we had. The Bar/restaurant area was clean, floors clear of debris and bright as it was on our last visit. It seemed with the Christmas decorations newly put up a,long with the large outdoor Christmas tree that The hotel was ready for the festive season... We sat down and ordered some coffees and snacks from the staff member who had came straight over to see to our needs. He gave us the time to make our choices while we talked catch up and came back to take our order..... Three Lattes , two lovely Danishes pastries and two small, warmed, scones served with Preserve & cream and another american coffee later, around 1 hour later. we had a great easy time (we do not have many) we had a great time. Additionally,the duty staff could not have been any better.or more attentive to our needs. As we were about to leave after a 11/2 hour stay we asked for the bill and to be honest, I was surprised when it came, to just a little over £14.00.. , less than a £5 a head. Needless to say a very decent tip was left after such a pleasant morning coffee and catch up. Will we go again soon, definitely. There are a number of cosy restaurants and tearooms at the Roker including high quality Italian dining to traditional English fare. The Italian i can recommend Thanks to all of the duty staff at the Roker Hotel.

Booked the roker for a night for my birthday as me and the hubby were going out for a few drinks and food at the house of Zen we had a lovely night until we got back to the hotel an absolute horrendous nights sleep we were put in a room right next to stairs thudding up and down for hours and across the landing above us women screeching and singing at 1am someone came out their room and asked them to be respectful. The thudding seemed to go quiet around 2am then started again around 6am so no sleep at all. I was not advised about these rooms when booking and did not see this on the site. Why put people in these rooms anyway knowing there is a party on and clearly there was other rooms available as I checked. Will not be using this hotel again worse place we have stayed in ever

Stayed over for 1 night. Had 2 rooms. Both pretty much identical. Well equipped rooms nicely done out. Beds were comfortable and rooms were very warm. At morning breakfast we arrived at 8:30am. Bang on 9am the staff cleared the whole breakfast buffet away when we were still only eating our cooked plate. Weren't even give a chance to select any savory items? There were other people in the room who were even later into breakfast than us. I understand 9am is the finish of the breakfast service but that should mean no else is allowed into the breakfast room. Not clear everything and if you've not had it too bad?!!! We had an evening meal in the attached bar / restaurant which was OK. Nothing special. The bill was split and half the bill was put onto my room. However at check out they attempted to charge me for the whole evening meal. Mistake or....? The guy at checkout wasn't very apologetic. Overall a bitter sweet stay. Some good some bad.

The only time I've ever spent in Sunderland has either been in the city centre, at the football stadium or on ropey building sites so I was amazed to discover that just a couple of miles out of town, there is such a picturesque seaside resort. The £78 quid I spent on an executive suite (with breakfast) has to go down as the best value I've ever received during my 5 years spent bumming round the UK in my current job role. The bathroom was bigger than the average hotel room and the monstrous sized bedroom was tastefully decorated in a subtle maritime theme which boasted a coffee pod machine and the piece de resistance being a massive brass telescope located in the bedroom window which offered great views out over the Promenade and North Sea. I woke up one night slightly disorientated & confused and was convinced for ten minutes that I was either Admiral Horatio Nelson or Captain James Cook. The bar area is also really stylish with a great range of beers, many produced by local breweries and the menus looked nice although I only partook in liquid refreshment.

Most importantly if you are unlucky with your room you may find it very noisy at the weekends with weddings and/or music at the bar. You need to be in a room a long way from this . The rooms can also get very hot even in November . Staff were all excellent and friendly . Breakfast was a bit hit and miss with the fresh fruit not always looking that fresh . The restaurants ( the bar and the adjoining Italian )were excellent .

Stayed at the Roker Hotel with my girlfriend back in September. Very good value for money, great sea views. Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The bar was very welcoming and we enjoyed a few delicious cocktails. Staff were all friendly and extremely helpful. Would definitely stay here again

Just returned from a two night stay at the Roker hotel. Our room was just fantastic with great views of the Sunderland coastline and the beautiful Roker pier. Breakfast was great both mornings and I even got an espresso served by our waitress sally. Would definitely recommend for a nice couples break.

Not the first time I've stopped hear and I really cant complain its lovely with lovely rooms with lovely views of the beaches and the sun sets and glowing orange sky as the sun rises over the sea , restaurants are lovely with plenty to choose from , drinks are reasonably priced and staff nice and helpful will be back

Lovely hotel, but its geared up mainly for weddings & parties. Greeted by a tiny, full car park, & a verandah full of stinking fag smokers right outside the door. No guest lounge, a tortuous route to a room which was so tiny that the kettle was in the wardrobe, and had several broken fixtures including a window and a shower screen which wouldn't close, and a stone cold ‘Hot' towel rail which was too small for the towels anyway. The Tea lounge looked interesting but was closed due to a party. On the positive side, good friendly service, good breakfast and a lively bar.

I have often visited the Roker Hotel bar and restaurant and it's usually very good. However on Sunday 13th October 2019 I went for Sunday lunch with family. Our experience was such that it has put me off eating there. We ordered our meals which were Sunday roasts. The meals came but by the time the vegetables came out, the dinners were cold. The service was poor although the staff were very nice; I think they may have been new. We ordered desserts and coffees. The drinks came but again were cold by the time the desserts came. My daughters dessert didnt arrive until everyone else had finished theres. It was a shame as I dont live in the area but whenever I visit I do enjoy a Sunday lunch there. I will be going elsewhere from now on.

Car parking poorly controlled, as a disabled blue badge driver it was IMPOSSIBLE to park front or at the back. The lift did not work and I had to struggle with the stairs. This was later repaired. The radiator in the bathroom could NOT be turned off and was leaking, we had to put the bin under it. The room was far too hot even with the radiators off and windows open. The coffee/tea maker was difficult to use quickly for two cups consecutively, plastic waste of sachets is of concern and the tea tasted horrible. USE KETTLES! The receptionist on arrival tried his best to get the lift working. We called down for a kettle which was delivered quickly and without fuss, the employee was very helpful with the TV controller managing to turn off the audio description. ALL the staff at the Dinner were extremely helpful and courteous. The person who presumably the late-night porter and moved us into the horrendously noisy bar area was also very helpful later on allowing us to stay and continue using the bar services etc. The checkout was smooth and easy. I congratulate you on having excellent staff who are customer focussed.

Lovely hotel in a great location, great for walking or cycling on the coastline. Close to the town and train station, if you want to venture to Newcastle. Executive rooms are lovely with great views of the beach.

I must admit, I had a great nights sleep, the bed was so comfortable, plus the pillows were just right, l always struggle trying to get a half decent pillow. Well done. The room was spacious, big bathroom, decor very nice. However the breakfast (weekday)was not it's best, the scramble eggs were light baby sick, baked beans appeared to have been microwaved

Came to the roker hotel for my birthday lunch and the staff were so helpful, with me being a celiac and gluten free person they advised me what I could eat and make a beautiful homemade bread and catered well for the whole family will defo be coming back again!

Stayed in an EXECUTIVE Suite on Friday night as we were attending an event in the function room. The room was delightful and the little touches were just perfect. Had difficulty operating the coffee making machine and would had preferred a kettle, the shower tray was slow to drain and I was concerned that I didn't flood the floor! But those were minor issues. The room did not suffer from noise so had a great sleep and got to look out onto the sea first thing the next day. Breakfast was delicious and service in the restaurant excellent. Young man on reception was very helpful and we would recommend highly.

Their was 10 of use went to this event. We were their because one of our party was 40. The meal was good. The enterinment was good also. Right now for the down falls. a) toilet rolls in the ladies - very little at start of night. At 8 o'clock NONE. b) ladies toilet a disgrace paper sliver the floor c) top it all. - water all over the door. ( walk with sticks so needy fall down) the disabled toilet door would not open.. Also can someone let me know we're the lifts are. We are coming again in December for our party now night. This time we are booked in to stop. So looking forward to that.

Very poor hotel best Western needs to take the word best from this hotel. On arrival we thought OK nice looks good. When we got tho our room which we paid £150 for. 1..panel above door missing 2. Door wouldn't open due to carpet rased. 3. Fist punch in wardrobe door. 4. Cracks all along wall. When my wife asked for a move she was told nothing the reception guy could do and no refund possible. I had a word he came to the room. Refund straight away.... Booked into travel lodge City centre cheeper and more welcoming..

It's the little things that set you aside. Towelling robes. Newspaper style information booklet. Great beer and gin on site. Seaside detailed features on each room and a proud local identity and all at a reasonable price. Loved it.

Stayed here for one night and it was perfectly fine for the price we paid. Room was clean, albeit small. comfy bed. Looking out at a brick wall. Bathroom was basic and the shower was very powerful. Would I stay here again? Yes.... it's a place to get your head down for the night, but I would look at the room type, view and price...

This was the venue for my sister & her husband's wedding day & night. All I can say is it was 1st Class from start to finish. The ceremony, reception with afternoon tea being entertained by singer Mark followed by an evening reception with Italian hot & cold buffet & DJ were all suberb! A very big thank you to all of the staff for helping to make it magical.

We stayed over for our friends wedding. I had asked for a sea view room when I booked and we were delighted with the view. Our room was clean and well decorated We had a lovely sleep and breakfast was good too.

This hotel is really bad . Like faulty towers. 1. No one warned us of the wedding party till 1 am, and we could hear every song and DJ chat. 2. Most of things didn't work in the room (bathroom fan, shower drainage, hairdryer) 3. WiFi kept failing 4. No one in reception when I arrived . Waited ages. 5. Mattress springs . Mattress old and needed replacing 6. Dreadfully loud toilet cistern 7. I'll go back to the Grand - thank you very much

Have worked in Sunderland over the past few years and have tried all the "Decent" hotels e.g. Marriot, Garden Inn, Lumley Castle etc. Whilst these are all good, the Roker stands-out because of its lovely seafront location and the quality of its breakfast. There is no air-con and it can be noisy at night because of the outside bar, but overall it's very good.

Great big family room however some of these rooms are really far from reception/ the car park with no lift access which isn't ideal if you have a toddler - maybe check which room you are getting if you have little ones. Other than that can't fault anything else - we'd book again. We booked early so got a great deal, the bed we got was huge and really comfy, literally right on the beach near the lighthouse so great location, marked down on cleanliness as our bathroom had a few odd looking bugs and the windows had huge bird poop stains which wasn't particularly nice to look at.

I took my wife away for her birthday she really enjoyed her stay . We eat in the Italian down stairs the food and service was great then we had a few drinks in the bar if you like gin this place is for you they make there own. Breakfast was very busy on Sunday morning but the team were great

Lovely hotel, enjoyed for my business over night stay. Great little seaside hotel, has various restaurants connected. I rate it down as I had a basement room, which was very small. I had to carry my luggage by myself down 3 flights of stairs. Enjoyed the food in the pub, got really busy on the evening, I felt as thought people were sitting on my lap while I was eating. Not enough bar staff. Overall I would stay again, but would request a different room.

This was a very pleasant hotel to stop in; loved the decor and image they have gone for. My room was a small double at the back but still not to bad with a big bathroom (bit dated but ok). The staff were all very pleasant and professional nothing was to much trouble. Rooms at the front of the hotel all have a really good view of the harbour, light house and beach .

Enjoy a night in the hotel with drinks and food at there restraint... the hotel staff were lovely and polite.... the room was spacious and bed was very comfy. Had my favourite beer on tab Heineken and it went down a treat.

Had a wonderful day at the hotel and lovely meal with the family the food was cooked superbly not a thing wrong with the meal which is rare for a family of 8.... to top it off there poetic license gin strawberry and cream went down a treat

Stayed here recently with my boyfriend to celebrate our anniversary and we were so well looked after. Once we had checked in to our room (which was lovely), we enjoyed afternoon tea which was absolutely delicious and so well presented. I would highly recommend visiting the Poetic License Bar for a few drinks - there was so much variety! The staff were excellent and were able to make recommendations and we now have a few new favourites and were even able to purchase a bottle of gin to bring home with us. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough - a truly memorable stay and we will certainly be back! Thank you to the Team!

We stayed here again with some friends the Team really looked after us well. The sea view was amazing looking out the window seeing the sea was very relaxing. Loads of choices for breakfast and a great full English. Thanks to the Team we will be back

We booked this hotel for two nights as we were going to watch the world cup cricket in Durham. Well what a disappointment. As Best Western Diamond select customers we were entitled to a room upgrade. No upgrade was possible because they were almost full. However they had had several weeks notice of our booking. Well it all went downhill from there. We were put into room 115 which was tiny, very small double bed unbearably hot (no fan) and only one window to open, which was over the kitchen and bar storage so was extremely noisy until 1am. Breakfast was ok but could have been hotter. Reception on check out felt as though we had been dismissed. Werent asked if we had enjoyed our stay and not even a smile. Wrote to complain about this and was told that reception staff had left that day and was offered a free nights accomodation which was not possible. No contact from manager to date so this gets a very poor rating in our book! Unfortunately we will not stay there again

The room was big and well furnished. The beds with a lot of pillows were comfortable. On the wall in the bathroom there was explained on a sticker how to handle the towels. Only if they should given to the bath they would be replaced. Because we had booked only 4 nights we needed at no time fresh towels, as we and many others do at home. But the terrible thing happened: The towels (two per person) were changed every day, although we left them on the hook to continue using them. Our tour group of 23 people has made the same experiences in this matter! And that means 184 fresh towels, although 46 would have been enough. What a huge burden on the environment! And at breakfast the waste went on. All the ingredients for the cereal were packed in small portions, which quickly made up the trash can for our 23 people! It is unbelievable that this hotel has reportedly received awards for sustainable and environmentally friendly operation!

Graduation time at Sunderland University means another visit to The Roker Hotel. Rooms have been refurbished since our last visit to a high standard. Comfortable bed and all amenities we could need. No noise issues and excellent sea view. King size bed would be nice option. Staff are very helpful and friendly. All eating options were very good although food choices at the bar were limited on the Monday due to a busy weekend. Family suite for our adult children was at the other end of the Hotel but again clean, with everything they needed.

Attended Audi event at wearside Audi. Booked in to stay at Roker. Absolutely fantastic hotel. Room was amazing (called the cinnamon) beautiful decor and furnishings. Huge Bed, clean and comfortable throughout. Bathroom lovely with bath and shower. Room had big window overlooking sea view also had telescope to use to look at sea. Had lunch which was beautifully presented and on evening had meal in Antico restaurant which was outstanding.Breakfast was excellent. Will definately stay here again. Highly recommended.

Very disappointed with our stay. The room (129) was tiny, so much so you couldn't open the wardrobe as it banged into the end of the bed. The shower head was faulty and kept slipping down. Very dated old fashioned bathroom, not what I expected from a 4* hotel. Breakfast was pretty bad. Scrambled egg was grey due to being overcooked and other items such as bacon and sausages looked like they had been boiled rather than cooked properly. Very overpriced and I now wish I'd have booked the Hilton instead as it was £20 less per night!

I arrived early and was given a room immediately which was great. Good sized room, comfortable bed and friendly staff. Great location with bus stop opposite, and excellent restaurant. Would stay there again.

Well positioned hotel, with friendly staff and nicely decorated rooms. A sensible choice for a great value stay, with wonderful views over the Roker beach and positioned right next to the famous Roker pier.

Friendly staff and comfortable bed and room. Nice sheltered conservatory overlooking the sea and there is a good Italian restaurant downstairs. The hotel is popular with locals and we will be back soon

Super position on the sea, super ok staff, good breakfast and nice breakfast room with sea view, silent room on the back of hotel away of Pub on Monday (guess noisy nearly everywhere with Pub at full speed), outstanding gin tonic served at Pub, super fast internet connection but... room I got is close to unacceptable as incredibly small, windows locked not to open, improvable cleanliness and walls paint requiring urgent maintenance. Likely I would return for the pros but with an eye on other alternatives if no ongoing improvements...

Stayed in Rm 127 see previous reviews regarding this room. Towel rail in bathroom warm but radiator in bedroom was not on so room a little cold but warm enough in bed. We placed the coffee machine on the bedside table on the left using the plug socket below. Fabulous views from this room and no noise. Went for breakfast at 9 on Sunday several items were in short supply but were replenished on request. Another note about dining the Italian restaurant which can be entered via a stair at the rear of the bar has been renamed and is now a separate business to the hotel,so if you have booked a dinner package you can at the moment use the Italian but make sure the hotel has informed them you are dining there otherwise the restaurant staff will need to accompany you to hotel reception to rectify the bill. Hotel also has tea room and bar with gin distillery.

Great view across to the sea , loverly on a nice day to sit and have a drink. Been here before and put in the dungeons ( my name for the rooms down stairs at the back of the building ). I've been a BW Member for many years but have started using them less these days. Check in , given door card and direction to the room, no information given to breakfast times or even where to go for it . Did I want the bonus points or the free drink ? Not asked . The room given was changed at my request to something larger but then I could not get on with any work has the internet was very poor. The fan in the bathroom had to be left on as the flaps outside shake with the wind ( took a while to work the noise out). Bathroom radiator full on can't switch off. Did not eat in or even have a drink so can't comment on this area . Overall a place that could do better so easily

We booked this hotel for the location and got what we expected - beautiful coastal view (just a shame the room had fixed thicker curtains so we had to fasten them up to enjoy the view). We had executive room 127 which was on the highest floor, giving a great view and protecting us from the weekend noise from the bar and function room on the lower levels. However, not recommended for those with mobility issues - various firedoors and staircases to negotiate to access this room. The room was pleasant enough but I expect a decent bed and bedding in this hotel calibre/price range. The mattress had seen better days, the duvet was solid and heavy (we put it on top of the mattress to firm it up and slept with just the duvet cover over us) and the pillows were solid, thin blocks of foam. After our first night we went out and bought ourselves 2 pillows to use. There seemed to be an issue with the hot water system as one morning we could ony get very warm water from the cold water taps, and during one night we discovered there was no water at all when we wanted to flush the toilet. No mixer taps. A coffee machine was provided in the room (in the wardrobe) but there was no surface to place it on for use with an accessible power outlet. Staff were friendly and helpful. Weekend breakfast buffet very nice, though would recommend getting there early as it cools down rather fast. Weekday breakfast to order was excellent. Great with plenty of free parking. Good location for local restaurants.

Stayed for a Saturday night. Room was fairly compact and bed had seen better days. Great location on sea front. Bar had a nice atmosphere with great choice of G+Ts. Had an excellent meal at the Italian restaurant next door. Breakfast was good, with great sea views. We would stay again but would upgrade the room.

Excellent and friendly staff. Beautiful decor inside. Room lovely and clean. Good variety for breakfast and the food was gorgeous. Bit noisy as there was a wedding on when we stayed, however the bed was one of the best I've ever slept in. Would definately go back.

This hotel is a perfect venue for weddings etc situated right on the sea front. Plenty of parking spaces. The room we had was at the back of the hotel and very roomy, nice and clean and even had a bath in the ensuite if your not a fan of showers. The bed was very comfortable. The bar prices are what you expect for the type of venue it is. Restaurant if you fancy a meal. Would stay here again. All staff very friendly and helpful.

From walking in the door to leaving there isn't a thing I can fault. Excellent service from fantastic staff all went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and looked after. The room had a fantastic view clean and very well maintained.

from arrival to moment we left the staff could not do enough for us wether in the bar our one of the restaurant even down to the receptionist telling me all about there lovely gins they brew , and obviously the wife wanted one to take home , absolute pleasure will definitely be back

Stayed here at the end of the C2C, perfect location for this as it overlooks the beach where you finish. It was our 2nd favourite place on the trip. The rooms were very nice, we had a seaview room, the bathroom was slightly disappointing, didn't seem to have had the same interior detail attention as the room, it was a bit 'basic'. Nice, but basic. It was bank holiday weekend so was a little noisy out the front with revellers but it didn't really disturb us too much. The breakfast was quite nice, the staff were pleasant enough but not that attentive, busying themselves with other things other than clearing plates etc.

2nd time we have attended a wedfing hete. Food on night was beef or pork dips, the meat could have repaired shoe soles. The breakfast on both occasions was cold, ordered pot of tea, i,m still waiting for that to arrive. So disapointed. I will never waste my money on this hotel again. Absutely shocking.

We have just stayed over in one of the executive suites. We were at the end of the hotel as it can get lively above the bar. The view over the bay is lovely. The room was really well presented. The staff have all been lovely on both occasions.

The Roker Hotel was exactly what I was looking for. Comfortable and clean. Fabulous location by the beach. An impressice bar - definitely one for fans of gin! Staff were super friendly and helpful. I would definitely stay again!

Loved the hotel however the long walk up and downstairs to the basement wasn't great. Also the sealant around the bath look like a child had been busy. Breakfast was lovely and the staff helpful. I would stay again but not in the basement.

The worst stay ever in my life. The best room was hot with no air conditioning. When we opened the window lots of noise and pollution coming through. I think that it shouldnot be called hotel at all. Do not waste your money.

Brilliant gem, in Roker, and what an area. I was impressed with the breakfast, and the housekeeping staff. Clean and good food. A great bar area, with the option of outside under cover with heaters, brilliant. I will stay again.

We have been to “The Roker” on quite a few occasions as we visit relatives in the area. Fabulous location on the sea front, friendly staff, outstanding Italian restaurant adjoins the hotel, lively bar( can be noisy) they even have their own stills making award winning gin. Love the place .

2 night stay at the Roker. Comfortable, clean compact room. Hotel staff friendly and very helpful. Good breakfast and a great view from the dining area of the waves crashing outside. Ate in the poetic license area one evening which we thoroughly enjoyed. Overall a lovely stay and we would happily return. Thank you.

Had a lovely Sunday lunch with the family, staff were very helpful and pleasant, there poetic license gin for afters was even better would recommend the picnic gin was delightful. The beef was cooked to perfection and also the cakes were so tasty...

The Roker Hotel has a very strange layout when it comes to the rooms but they are very clean and modern. Some of the rooms are a liitle on the small size but if you are only staying overnight its not a proble. The food is 1st class and the portion sizes are on the large side. Great choise of gin and real ale. Excelt free carpark which is very large with one at the front and one at the rear. I have stayed here on and off for over 15 years with a 12 week stint many years ago and the staff still can't do enough for you. This has got to be one of the best Best Western Hotels in the country and I have stayed in lots of them.

Always choose the Roker Hotel whenever I visit Sunderland, staff, service and food are always first class. Good atmosphere in the bar, even when it's quiet. Staff are very pleasant and helpful and the rooms are very comfortable

I stayed there once before and loved it, even put excellent on here, we booked up through booking.com, don't use them they lied booking.com are a ripoff, they promised money back but never died absolute disgrace. Back to the hotel, we were put in the most back of back rooms possible, literally from reception, through the doors at the right up two flights of stairs, through a door along a corridor through a door along a corridor, turn left down the stairs, along another corridor down two stairs and your there.it was very noisy above us, the bathroom had no blinds, and the toilet is more or less in front of the window. Reception staff promised better room next time, don't know how she will do this if it's nearly full, staff as usual nice. But room location and decor rubbish.

Very comfortable, great food, location and lounge/bar area for relaxing. Staff are very friendly and helpful - nothing is any trouble and attentive to every detail. Worth even a day trip to sit in the lovely lounge area and gin bar!

Not a bad hotel stay! We stayed as we had family living nearby and didn't want to overload them.. We stayed in room 105 and I have got to say the plumber needs sacking! The noise from the pipes is plain odd.. shower leaking.. shower rail loose! 0740 the alarm kept going off but no call to say false alarm... I guess if you get slammed in the gin bar downstairs you'd sleep through these trivialities... I will stay again if they sack their plumber!!!

Friendly welcome on arrival check in easy . Top floor room small but fully equipped with everything needed Bathroom fine served the purpose over bath shower , nice mirror with lighting and shaver socket . Tea and coffee facilities in room biscuit and sweets also. Check out fuss free. On site parking and gin bar, didn't visit gin bar but it was busy. Nice stay and would definitely stay again

Stayed here for one night, the hotel is right on the seafront so the view over the beach is fantastic. The room was comfortable and clean, and the staff were all friendly. We also had a lovely meal (with excellent service from Kelly) in the Poetic License bar that's part of the hotel. Great value and would happily return.

We visited the roker on a gorgeous Friday evening,staff were pleasant & will do anything to help you! We had a lovely sea view table which was lovely! Food was amazing,served hot & quick! Plenty option for a drinks selection as I love Gin, & cocktails. Couldn't fault anything that Friday! Love the fact you can sit outside when it's a lovely day/evening,haven't stayed in the hotel as of yet,but you love to see there is to offer. Defiantly would return

My girlfriend and I wanted to keep it low key for our recent anniversary, so after reading reviews we decided on an overnight stay at the Roker, it didn't disappoint! From start to finish the staff were polite and attentive throughout our stay. We were greeted by a member of staff upon our arrival and shown to our room. We then spent our night in the Poetic License next door. I'd like to say a special thank to all of the staff, especially to Leoni for looking after us!

What a lovely place to stay, on the seafront, an easy bus ride into the city. Well worth a visit. Staff were all very friendly and helpful, we were on a trip to the theatre and the hotel just added to the experience. Clean, well appointed all in all highly recommended

I stayed in the Roker on 11 February on business. I have stayed there before and it is a very popular hotel. The cleanliness of the place is excellent, lovely food and very friendly staff in the Poetic Licence restaurant and also the breakfasts are very good and well prepared. The Italian waitress at breakfast is very friendly and nothing seems too much trouble for her. I would definitely stay again at the Roker Hotel as the facilities and location are great. If you get a sea view room that is another great bonus. Just one suggestion - Please TURN DOWN the heating in the hotel rooms, they are way too warm and I and other guests I spoke to, had to go outside for some fresh air and also have the windows open at night. Otherwise all good!!!!

Nice venue for my nephews boxing doo. Let down very badly from snotty bar staff when you first walk into the bar which sells food. Was left waiting for 10 minutes while they served everyone else then laughed at when asking for prices of the lagers they had on sale. Walked past us and served others when we had waited the longest never been served by such ignorant arrogant bar staff in all my life.. I used to work in a bar and manners cost nothing will not be going back.. I suggest you give your bar staff some training in customer service as it seems none of them on the front bar have any customer service skills. Makes me wonder how these people get jobs.. 0 out of 10 for customer service!!!!!!

Myself and my partner stayed here last night on BB we stayed in room 115 which was quiet and just off reception as we asked for when booking..we had a lovely meal in the Italian restaurant and both waitresses was very chatty and friendly...the food was delicious then we headed to the poetic licence bar... wow. Thus bar is amazing and they make great cocktails..better than abroad..we had 3 mojito each and the are really strong.. breakfast was perfect..we sat in ..let there be crumbs while watching the sunrise.. thanks for a great time roker hotel it was just what my partner needed

It is almost 10years since I stayed here before. The rooms seem to be the same good standard, but there are many new features which I am impressed with. Friendly staff and good food made the stay an even more pleasant experience

Firstly I called the hotel a few weeks before making the booking as the hotel pictures showing the glamorous bathrooms & large bedrooms and asked are those the executive rooms and are all of them like this? My reply was yes sir and are all sea views. So I went ahead and booked expecting a jacuzzi corner bath or a double bath to share with a bottle of fizz. We got allocated room 127, it is a box room in the attic! The room was that small you couldn't get passed the bed if you opened the wardrobe and the dressing table had the legs sawed in half to fit it in! There was a large light hanging around two feet above the bed.The bath was like a tiny travelodge one with a shower that trickledown and with it being in the attic you had to duck down to use it. My girlfriend waited in the bar area while waiting for this room to be ready took over 40 minutes to get a sandwich! There wasn't many people in it either! So no surprise what breakfast was going to be like. Finally got the keys just after 3pm so 2 hours of daylight to enjoy the view. Breakfast is served?? Between 7am & 10am on a Sunday so not much time to enjoy the beautiful views. We went down at 9:15 no check list for breakfast so we were just given a table and asked if we would like a tea or coffee, we asked for coffee we both got tea with a tiny bit of milk. So eventually we got it changed. We sat around a while then thought we best look to see what's on offer. We had the choice of two empty fruit juice barrels and no water facilities. There was a gap where the pastry's would go. The bread was almost see through and the toaster you nearly burn your hands to retrieve, there was a good selection of preservatives and a little bit fresh fruit, a couple of cereals and some rubbery cheese. After 30 minutes of sitting in the breakfast room we were given a menu for the cooked breakfast. We both ordered the full English another 30 minutes passed by then it arrived. It looked really nice until we realised neither of our beans had been warmed up, so another wait while the rest of it was getting cold. We finally got finished at 10:30 and there was a large table in before us and they only got served when we left baring in mind we had to be out our room by 11am. I noticed that one of the executives from Sunderland AFC was just finishing breakfast when we were seated I bet he wasn't given a box room or had the service we received. We would of complained when we checked out but there was nobody around. Thanks for spoiling what should of been a romantic birthday present.

I want to go back to explore the tunnel through the breakwater to the lighthouse. That is a memorable experience which will have to wait until my next visit. The seaview is perfect and the proximity to the beach ideal.

Was treated to a nighy here from my hubby for my birthday and what a great it was. Beautiful room really tastefully decorated and furnished with a smashing sea view. Couldn't fault the cleanliness and the nice touches such as the Tassimo machine and bathrobes and the lovely basket of treats on the dresser. Chocolates and snack all at a small cost but a lovely idea. At first we had a bit of an issue with the heating with a non working radiator but a quick call to reception and we were given an electric heater which had us toastie in minutes. We had a lovely meal downstairs in the Italian Farmhouse then a few drinks in Poetic licence. In fact with the executive room we had you had 2 complimentary gins which again was a nice bonus. We had breakfast included with our stay inset there be Crumbs which is a beautiful tea room in the hotel. One thing we dis notice was the lack of staff so we had quite a wait for breakfast. We sat for a good 15 minutes till my hubby went over to the waitress and pointed out we hadn't had our orders taken then there was almost 30 minutes wait for 2 full English. A little frustrating but not the staffs fault they were so friendly and polite but a few more staff would help I think. The breakfast itself was delicious. There's was a huge variety of continental breakfast fayre and the cooked was hot and tasty. In all a wonderful stay so much so I didn't want to leave our lovely room so will be back later In the year for the hubbys birthday as well as maybe tea and cake during the summer.

We decided to book the hotel for a quiet night away due to my wife looking after her sick Dad 20 4 seven. Little night away for her we had a few drinks in the bar the poetic license along with fever-tree tonic was spot on which was free just show your key wallet if you are staying. Breakfast was plenty full and the Team were very friendly. Thanks to the Roker Hotel Team

Stayed at the rocker whilst working on the area. My 4 night stay was nothing short of wonderful. Very friendly welcoming staff from the moment I walked through the door. The room was very clean and tidy well maintained and easy to relax in after a hard day's work. I ate in the pub and also the Italian restaurant and found both just as good quality as the hotel my personal favorite being the Italian as the homemade pizzas were out of this world. Thankyou for a great stay and I hope to be back very soon .

Recently stayed here with my husband for a night away, and first impression was just WOW.. Everywhere is immaculate, staff are lovely. We checked in and made our way up to the room , again everywhere was just immaculate. The room was out of this world, bed very comfy, all quiet and peaceful. Staff are lovely, all happy to go above and beyond for you. I can't recommend this hotel enough. Will be visiting again very soon :)

Booked via best Western website and secured a good rate for payment up front. On arrival to checkin the staff couldn't find booking then found without 2 reservations with no name which was booking for. Myself and colleague and we had to paid on site! (I've checked and not been double charged). Not a good start. Then once checked in found we were located in the dungeons. Rooms have been upgraded and we're comfy and warm although bathroom had no heating was cold in morning. Then in morning to top off the visit we ordered breakfast and waited 30mins to find out the waitress hadn't actually put our order in and had to reorder!!! Would not recommend and will be staying elsewhere next visit to town.

The room I was given was more like a cupboard than a room. There was a small, open hanging space but no drawers to store stuff away. The trendy ceiling light fitting was so low I banged my head on it every time I got up from the bed. The quadrant shower enclosure in the bathroom was the smallest I have ever seen. To reach the room I had to negotiate numerous flights of stairs both up and down. The room itself appeared to be above the laundry (although it may have been the kitchen) from which emanated an intermittent low humming noise that persisted throughout the evening and became like water torture. Other than the maid who serviced my room and the young lady on reception (early Saturday morning 12th January) the staff appeared to be poorly trained, badly organised and more interested in chatting amongst themselves than attending to the guests. With no more than three guests in the restaurant for breakfast and at least twice as many staff on duty they were unable to deal satisfactorily with a local couple who were regular walk-ins for breakfast. Facing a 400 mile drive home the following day I retired early in order to be away by 6:30 a.m. only to be disturbed by two groups of inconsiderate guests who woke me at midnight and 1:30 a.m.

Well done to management and staff for the fantastic night 12th Jan. The tables were beautifully decorated and the food was really good. Everyone in our party had a brilliant time thanks to the live band, the whole evening was a great success and all for £17.95

A really good Hotel with restaurants attached and right on the seafront with easy access to the City. They also had a superb deal on food in the Italian restaurant which was of a high quality. All the staff were friendly and helpful. Can be a bit noisy as you can hear adjacent rooms

Small problem with toilet flush, no hassle upgrade to bridal suite with a Seaview. Super service. Great breakfast, again with a sea view, other guests staying longer looked as if they were part of the family.

I booked one of the January offers. room, Evening meal (2 course each ) and breakfast. This was totally worth it and a nice treat. As the title it was for my other half's birthday, what do you get someone when the birthday just after Christmas. We could check in from 3pm which was not a problem ( been local ) we didn't mind. We got one of the suites which was coast facing ( amazing view ) the room was very spacious, clean. It had a sofa and fire side chair in room a super king size bed, t.v tassimo machine, I pod/pad docking station, with build in alarm clock. Spacious bathroom, with bath and shower over bath. All were very clean and well decorated. The room was very comfortable and warm. We went to the bar after checking in, working way through the menu, drinks are really good/ nice. The staff are very friendly and helpful throughout the hotel. We ordered food from the bar menu again - staff very helpful and food was very nice and tasty, there is a separate dining area for bar meals which is next to the bar ( so can still get the bar atmosphere) The next day we went into the coffee shop part for breakfast- this was a continental and cooked, you have a help your self area and staff there to take your orders for cooked meals, again the food was very nice. Been a local person- was nice to stay here and enjoy the service they offer. Usually it's a taxi home, after a night out. So the treat of staying over was a bonus. The hotel is loverly and worth staying over.

We booked a party night to celebrate a friends birthday and decided to book an overnight stay too. What an absolutely fantastic night we had, it was a 90's evening with entertainment and disco and 3 course meal, the entertainment was top class and the food was absolutely delicious, the roast beef was the beef I have ever had, to top the night off we stayed in an executive room, what a treat!!! The decor and view was breathtaking. I can not recommend this hotel and their party nights enough in fact we all had such a great night we came home and booked another party night next month and we will certainly be staying over night again as a treat. Well done The Roker 10/10

Decided to have a taste of luxury and spend a few days touring in the Tyneside and Wearside area and booked into the Best Western Roker Hotel for a mid-week autumn break. Arrived at the hotel on Remeberence Sunday and had difficulties finding a parking space (None hotel users,using car park).However reception staff could not have been more helpful, allocated room was everything and more than described.Throughout the whole stay all staff were very courteous and professional.All in all a great holiday and would not hesitate for anyone visiting the area to at least check the hotel out to see what's on offer.

This is our second visit to this hotel, we were here the same time last year. We ended up in the same room! We only booked a basic room so no sea view, actually no view at all. The rooms are decorated lovely, very comfortable and clean. This time of year they have lots of promotions on. We used the Farm House Italian for tea which is through the bar and into the basement. Very friendly staff, my partner lived his very hot spicy pizza, I enjoyed my Garlic bread. My pizza looked lovely a Margarita with tuna. The bar served some fab Gins that are distilled on the premises. The barman on the Wed night wasn't very good, he never offered a choice of tonic and just poured the whole bottle in! A double G&T is about £7. Breakfast is served between 6.30 & 9, we had a lovely table in the window with a seaview. We both ordered a cooked breakfast, I asked for veggie sausages. This year only got one sausage and one hash brown even though it is on the menu as sausages and hash browns!! The staff who served breakfast were very friendly as were the staff in the Italian. Amy who has served us in the Italian came to speak to me as i had an allergic reation and wanted to check how I was. The sea front is a beautiful place to stroll along. The bar in the hotel offers a good choice of meals served until o'clock. The bar staff on the Thursday night were very good. They made recommendations and have us choices. We had a lovely stay, my partnerl eft a small list of little things that needed to be looked at in the room. We did struggle to flush the toilet and the bed need some work doing. Nothing major, the receptionist offered yo upgrade us if we book to go again.

Had an overnight stay with my son and loved every minute of the hotel, bar, restaurant and super friendly staff. Location is great and the views stunning. Found the hotel by chance on booking.com but will be going back again whenever i am in Sunderland. Keep up the good work. Thanks Peter #ftm

My friend and I went to the New Year Ball to celebrate my birthday. It was brilliant from beginning to end. Our room was explicit and the staff were very helpful and friendly. The vegan food was delicious. Would definitely go again. This was my second stay over in 2018 and would recommend it to anyone. My only issue was regarding the key for the door. Guests should be informed not to keep it with your phone as it effects access

Fantastic spacious room with great views. Perfect service on entry and throughout. The meal was fantastic in the bar as was the ambience with locals and hotel guests mixing together. Would recommend for anybody visiting the area.

Huge, gorgeous room. Very clean and tastefully decorated with everything you could need. Bed very comfy, location is beautiful with room overlooking the sea and the bar/restaurant was lovely too with a nice food and drinks menu. Would definitely recommend.

Staff were kind, friendly and professional. The atmosphere was great, the food was delicious and superbly cooked.... will definatley be returning in the new year. There own crafted picnic gin has to be the best gin I have tasted.

I must admit when the family decided to go out for Xmas dinner this year I wasn't keen on the idea I really wanted dinner at home as its a family day. But I am so glad I went along to the roker Hotel for Xmas Dinner it was lively we were in the six soldier suit and it was very warm and welcoming and the staff were fantastic. Food was great this place can is ideal for couples singles and families it took all the pressure from the Xmas dinner and can't wait to go again and if the service isn't fantastic enough the view is breath taking. Tha k you very much too all the staff at the roker we will be back.

Stayed at the Roker Hotel for 4 nights over Xmas as visiting family. I had a twin room at back of hotel so no sea view - I was offered a chargeable upgrade but I declined. Rooms are nicely decorated, functional and well equipped with everything you need eg. coffee/tea making facilities etc. Bathroom was large and as like the bedroom spotlessly clean. The hotel is very well located right on the sea front and as i no longer live by the sea i really enjoyed the early morning stroll along the pier followed by a coffee and bacon roll from one of the cafes near by! The hotel has a very popular public bar and coffee shop which i both enjoyed. I never ate at hotel as i ate at friends/family during stay but I hear it's good. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Only minor point being WiFi in my room was patchy as i think i was one of the remoter rooms; but not a big issue for me. In summary, nice rooms, great location, clean and fantastic value for money. Will be back next month.

Stayed here for 1 night to meet up with griends. On arrival given room key. Room was small but nice. Radiator was stone cold and the draught from the window was quite bad. (It was December). Returned to reception and was immediately upgraded to superior room with sea view. Ansolitely beautiful and couldnt fault it. As always a great stay for a great price.

Having just read a review about the poor standards of food (ie beef dinner) I couldn't agree more. I came here with friends for a Christmas night out and everything was looking good until my beef dinner arrived, to say I was disappointed was an understatement, the piece of meat that was on my plate was small, thick but very dry, I did ask for extra gravy but this made no difference. Also not a Great deal of veg, so prepare to get a take away on the way home. I have attended functions here previously and always been satisfied with the quality throughout. The best thing of the evening was the band Central Park whom put on a cracking show

On arrival i had an efficient check in. I booked a double room for solo occupancy. The bed was pushed up against the window and the room was small. The bathroom was down 3 steps which wasn't great getting up during the night for the loo. One of my gripes in hotels is bad lighting. The lights in my room were yellow- far from ideal.

We had a very good night attending christmas party event last Sunday night. It was for my birthday celebration with my friends. Service was really good and the venue, the food and the entertainment was really good too. We booked a room , we had a good deal with the price via booking.com. It was juat teicky to fimd the room though and if you habe a bad legs or bad knee, I won't suggest to habe those rooms ans you habe to go through so mamy steps. Room was okay, it could be better is the bath tub waa cleaner. I wonder if its the seal that's colour black or just need more scrubbing. But over all, we had a good night.

7 of us went to the Roker hotel to see 9th Avenue. We had a lovely meal and the show was good. 6 of us stopped over and had a coffee and scone on the Saturday afternoon. The lady who was our waitress was very nice (sorry didn't get her name.) she had a good laugh with us about our Christmas t. Shirts. The evening was good. Only why do people go on the dance floor with drinks in glasses. I know it's Christmas time but come on think!!! Also the DJ had to ask a few people to get off the stage. All staff we met were very professional. We will always look at the Roker for a girls stop over when we go to a show in the future.

...some of the poorest food by their standards. Having previously attended many functions at this venue, one thing that had never let us down was the quality of the food. On Saturday 1st December our party of 10 arrived for the first of the BW Christmas Party Nights. The décor of the room was appropriate, table location was good, bar service was quick and attentive but the food was not what was expected. To suggest the portion of beef was 'well done' to 'cremated' was an understatement. The Christmas pud was a slither, I would guess less than 1cm thick, roughly the size of a Jacobs cracker, supported by the meanest portion of custard. When I complained to one of the servers about the condition of the beef which had obviously been standing for hours on a hot plate, the response was that I could change it, but the replacement would be the same, and that others had complained too. As for the turkey....there were 2 slices of what looked like turkey ham folded and placed on top of mashed potato. Again, miles away from BW standards. Another down side to this review is that I have to go back in week or so with a dozen or so of my family to endure the same menu. Might sneak in a Subway !

The location of this hotel is superb. The decor lovely and the cleanliness faultless. I have stayed here before but it certainly must have been a warmer time of year.....the bedroom was really cold during the night, the shower never more than luke warm which was a little warmer than the Eggs Florentine for breakfast. The WiFi didn't work and the television repeatedly said no signal when I first arrived. The single room was big enough and well appointed but the light switches were badly placed. Interesting that when I checked out I was not asked how my stay was.... perhaps too tired of hearing complaints?

I booked an executive room 6 weeks prior to my stay. 2 days prior to the stay I called with regards to check in time. I requested to be not put in the awful pokey attic room whilst on that call having been allocated there on a previous day. . I have walking difficulties and not for one minute would I think this room would be allocated this room anyway as it could surely not be executive. So as I'm walking to my room. Yip! Of all the rooms in the hotel they had allocated me to the room you have to go outside to swing a cat! So I knew the hotel wasn't full so went back to reception and asked to be moved. No problem very swift 1 floor down. Executive room twice the size! Why on earth allocate guests to your worst room of which I specifically requested not to be in. The hotel was a hot a hell. Numerous people asked of the hearing could be turned down as it was so uncomfortable. I was advised it had been switched off. Radiators too hot to even touch! The room was the same. Had to leave the window open and have a noisy night. Little things that make a bad experience that would have took nothing to sort in the first place.

From the outside it looks like a row of terraced houses, certainly not a purpose built hotel. The reception is decorated in a gray depressing colour as is the outside. When asked if I could see the room before I paid they came up with the excuse " Its against company policy", perhaps that should have warned me. So find the room, up a staircase, then down a staircase at the rear into a narrow corridor, bit of a rabbit warren and a fire hazard. It would seem the emergency exit from that room leads down to the kitchen area (judging by the smells coming up the staircase) which is has the most likelehood of a fire. So we get into the room, I think 'pokey' would describe it, ok its a single room, but with a double bed, so not suitable for 2 people. Apart from the bed which takes up a lot of the floor area, there is a large free standing wardrobe. Opening the wardrobe door one sees the kettle plugged into a twin 13 amp socket hanging off the back of the wardrobe. Looking to the rear of the wardrobe you see the steel electrical enclosure hanging out the rear of the wardrobe, tugging on the twin and (I assume earth) wires from the false wall (the other side the bathroom). We are looking at a cause of fire here. How did this hotel receive its Fire Certificate, obviously nobody inspected this room, perhaps they could not find it. The small desk was cluttered with bric a brac making it unusable until it was cleared away and the teatray and kettle moved to it. How can you use a wardrobe for hanging clothes in if you are going to be boiling the kettle. This is perhaps the sort of room that a ladies maid or stage coach driver would have got for free and yet they had the cheek to charge for it. The bathroom was large but the tiling over the bath must have been done by a drunk as it was like vertical crazy paving. The wash hand basin sink required plungering. A list of 8 items required to be attended to. One just wonders how often rooms are checked for maintenance by somebody that knows what they are looking at. The breakfast /afternoon tea room adds a bit of class to the establishment and the breakfast menu is not all 'heart attack on a plate', staff seemed to be well trained here. The restaurant attached to the bar needs to look at its menu and offer more that is not fried and supply fresh steamed vegetables. The waitress seemed too pushy, they need to know their place.

Hotel was fantastic. Everything about it was what my wife and I needed. From the time of checking in to checking out, our stay was perfect in every way. We even got complementary gin and tonics. Food was really good and value for money. We will be back

On Saturday 10th November 2018 I attended our annual Remembrance function that had been arranged by the Ballroom management and staff. I must say that every element of this function had been planned and implemented to the highest level, from the layout, customer service, meals and support provided during the day and throughout the evenings activities. I cannot thank you enough for the time, service and assistance you provided to me and my team. Excellent Management and customer service from all the Ballroom Staff, we will definitely be back next year.

A lovely hotel for holiday and work. Having just spent 2 wonderful weeks in Sunderland. I would recommend this hotel to everyone. Its great for food and drink and Gracie is amazing. As are ALL the staff. Thank you all

Check in was smooth, sea view room efuch is one if the nicest I've ever stayed in on business. The only problem was I couldn't connect to the Wi-Fi in my room which I needed to work so I ended up having to work in the bar which I didn't really want to do. All staff friendly and helpful. I ate in their restaurant poetic license which was really nice food and good service. It's the nicest hotel I've stayed in the area. Despite the Wi-Fi problem I would return and is definitely recommend.

the room was far too hot we barely slept couldnt open the window because of noise from the fans and right next to the boiler room we arrived at 2 and were told quite abruptly the room wasn't ready and to come back after 3 , the shower was hard to manage , i nearly scalded my head , my brother in law had paid for a bottle of wine to be put in our room and it wasn't there , we didn't realise until the next morning when he rang to ask how it was ,to which our reply it wasn't there we barely got an apology , will not be returning

This Hotel is a Best Western Premier Collection and was just perfect. It is part of a complex that has a restaurant for morning and high teas called ‘Let There Be Crumbs', an Italian restaurant and another restaurant called Poetic Licence (which is also their Gin distillery) and where we had several cocktails (2 for 1 before 7 pm) and dinner. We had a standard room which didn't have a view and unfortunately got the afternoon sun making it very warm inside, the heating had also been turned on. I would recommend paying the extra to get a room with a view. The complex is opposite the ocean and the pier with the lighthouse and we enjoyed a walk around the boardwalk whilst the weather allowed. Loved it.

Nice looking quirky hotel on Seaburn's seafront. Check in very quick but staff not very informative. No information given eg breakfast times, bar opening times etc. Room small but well furnished. Our room was very warm all night despite no heating on and window open wide. There were a few repairs needing to be done eg The wardrobe didn't have a handle only two holes were the handle should have been making it hard to open, the wash hand basin took ages to drain away, the toilet was a hit or miss if it flushed, the bath overflow looked rusty/filthy. If these easy repairs had been done I'd have gave the hotel a 5* review. Plenty of choice for Breakfast, both hot and cold. Hot food was made to order. You made your own toast with lovely thick white or brown bread. Cold choices were fruit, yogurt, several cereals too choose from, pastries, fruit juices.

This is a nice hotel and had a Lovely room, nice staff, good amenities. However bring your own ear plugs or you will get no sleep all night. Literally the noisiest place I have ever stayed in, you can hear other guests coming upstairs,you can hear EVERYTHING going on / conversations in surrounding rooms, shouting,screaming,singing, and banging (?) that sounded like someone was breaking in to the wall this goes on..all.night.... The owners should think about sound proofing rooms or at least providing ear plugs. What a shame. Its such a let down being such a lovely looking hotel with nice staff.

Stayed at the Roker several times and always have a great experience- staff are very attentive and the choice of dining is great. Would recommend the Italian farmhouse as the pizzas are best I that I have tasted. Will be back next month and looking forward to it

Stayed here in October 2018 and booked an Executive Room which was very nice with plenty of room and overlooking the sea. Stay was let down by the breakfast we had on the Sunday morning where the hotel seems to be working hard to implement a process of “not enough” Not enough staff Not enough glasses for juice Not enough juice Not enough staff to clean the tables (place looked like a mess) Not enough food in the hot buffet I would say not GOOD enough...

I am as a rule cautious when I see best western as often they are older dated properties This is a cut above and a template that I wish others would follow Modern fresh interior with some nice features ( see the suitcase displays on the way to your room) I ate in the bar (fish and chips £10.95) it was served quickly and was a good portion size. The radiator in my room 140 did not work I was given another room without any issue Well priced and to cap it all the seaside view was amazing

Excellent staff, so polite and helpful. The room was so quiet you would think that we were the only ones in the hotel, it was very clean and comfortable as well, the view was none existent but I didn't ask for a view. The doorman on the front were really courteous and polite, I worked as a doorman for many years in Newcastle and these guys made you feel comfortable and safe, how doorman should be. When you find a gem like this one it's sets a standard to judge other hotels against it. Now we have discovered it I won't stop in any other hotel in Sunderland apart from the Roker, BW. A very hard act to follow. The breakfast was beautiful, a choice of seats where you felt comfortable, we got a sea view. And once again really nice staff, this goes a long way in my experience of hospitality. Thankyou Stephen and Lisa

We spent two nights here in September. Very comfortable rooms with good restaurants, the Italian kitchen was excellent. The staff could t have been more helpful and friendly. Definitely a great place to stay and explore this beautiful coastline.

Stayed for the weekend room was beautiful . Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was lovely plenty of choice of excellent standard . Only negative was the Italian restaurant was very disappointing but wouldn't hold it against the hotel whose standards are excellent.

We stayed at the Roker Hotel while visiting family in Sunderland. We had a wonderful experience staying there. The Roker makes its own gin and vodka an unexpected treat. The staff was amazing. Anything we needed the were there for us. I highly recommend the Roker

I visited Roker hotel on business; when I arrived in the evening after a long journey I was greeted with a smile and a friendly face by Charlotte. Charlotte was very pleasant and made me feel welcome. I explained I was here on business where Charlotte gave me the information I needed to make my stay a pleasurable one. The room was very comfortable,clean and cosy which most certainly exceeded my expectations. The decor has a nautical vibe which is tastefully done,the Roker newspaper in the room was a quirky and lovely touch. I didn't use the restaurant, however, if you like service with a smile, unique decor and a great view then give this place a visit.

I stayed at this hotel earlier last week and have honestly never met such friendly and helpful staff. Since I am not from the area they couldn't have been more accommodating with any questions I had. From checking in to checking out every member of staff was a delight. Thank you for a lovely stay!

We slept in one of the deluxe rooms and it was great. Spacious, well-equipped. My only complaint was the shower, which sprayed water everywhere. The food was nice and the service cannot be beat. They even delivered us a pizza after the kitchen had closed.

Hotel was certainly different from when I was here 44 years ago! Alina and Veronika the reception staff were very welcoming and accommodating. The room was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious, but could have done with minor improvements (toilet overflow running and some improvement to grouting around bath needed). Bed was very comfortable and we had a perfect night's sleep. Excellent facilities included an on-site Italian restaurant, a Coffee shop and a bar with an outside covered sitting area overlooking the sea. Hotel was clean and well looked after. Strangely I couldn't see a sign that said 'Roker Hotel' on the building itself! Very pleased, and we will be staying here again.

We arrived on a sunny Friday afternoon in late August to enjoy a 2 night stay. This is a lovely large hotel situated on Roker's seafront, offering fantastic views across the North Sea, pier and lighthouse. Our room (145) was very large and comfortable, with a sea view. We had a large king size bed and a lovely bathroom with bath and shower. The room was beautifully decorated, with a nautical theme. We did not appear to have a kettle, just a coffee maker, so asked at reception at 4.30pm on the Saturday if one could be brought to our room. Two hours later we had to remind reception, and a kettle duly arrived. We ate in the Italian Farmhouse restaurant on our first night, enjoying lovely food. Pan fried scallops and Pork bon bons for starters, followed by a Salmon fillet and a gorgeous Seafood mixed grill. This, along with the wine to accompany our meal, was not overpriced. The large bar area was very busy each night, buzzing with locals and visitors alike, creating a nice atmosphere. Our only disappointment was breakfast, particularly on the first morning (Saturday). Everything is self-service, available at weekends between 7 and 10am. We arrived by 9.30 to find little remaining. The 'hot' food was lukewarm at best, and there didn't appear to be any effort to replenish it. Cold plates, congealed bacon and tough black pudding. This was our only complaint, everything else throughout our stay having been so positive and enjoyable.

I stayed at the Roker on the weekend of September 21-24. My mother and I were attending a family wedding. The amenities were beautiful, and the staff were so helpful. My mother is a coeliac and also has a dairy allergy, so she has a number of very specific dietary requirements. However, the friendly staff worked very hard to accommodate her. At the wedding reception, the head server, Colin, took excellent care of her, ensuring that all of her meals were suitable and did not contain anything that could trigger her allergies. He even found a gluten and dairy-free chocolate cake for her dessert. The hotel staff were also incredibly helpful at breakfast. They were all wonderful, even though the restaurant was incredibly busy on Saturday and Sunday morning. They still took the time to speak to my mother and ensure that she would receive a gluten and dairy-free meal. Everyone was wonderful, but we found Rosalie to be particularly helpful. She was so friendly and really went out of her way to accommodate my mother's requirements. She was just fantastic, even when the restaurant was at its busiest. The Roker is an amazing hotel: beautifully decorated, with an astonishing view and incredible staff.

My wife and I have stopped here before and continue to find location lovely, staff very friendly and courteous. The Italian restaurant being excellent. We were put in room 137 a double room which was clean though small. However, it's location was a long walk up and down stairs facing the car park. All was fine on Friday until around 10-30.pm. Then the sound from the stairwell and adjacent room became very noisy with people arguing and swearing outside our room.. The sound of people repeatedly running and clomping up and down the stairs was intolerable. The noisy chatter and shouting continued. And noise from people at the nightclub and leaving this, began and meant we didn't get a good night sleep until after 2am. Though we love this hotel and location, we don't think we would stay again on a weekend.

My husband and I have just returned from our 2nd stay at this lovely hotel. Our first visit was for a friends wedding last year and we enjoyed our stay that much we booked to stay for our wedding anniversary, we can't fault anything the room was beautiful! Well equipped with everything you need, the decor is lovely and everywhere was meticulously clean. Beautiful view from the bar terrace where we enjoyed a few drinks from poetic license bar. Wonderful breakfast menu with plenty of choice. We look forward to our next stay in the near future!

Stopped at the Roker for 2 nights with work. Absolutely brilliant place to stay, very comfortable room, 1st class service from all staff, well stocked bar, tasty bar meals, superb choice for breakfast....... all with sea views!!!!!!! Then downstairs, an excellent Italian restaurant, again superb service and food. I stopped for work, but would definitely stay with the family in the future. Top marks all round.

Everyone has their own likes and needs so this is my opinion of the Roker Hotel which I say is superb. It's got everything you need and more, masterfully decorated to create an inspiring visit, food and drink was spot on but the absolute highlight and the threads that bind it altogether are the staff, every one of them was a credit to themselves and BW. If we're ever in the North East again i won't even consider anywhere else. Top marks BW.
