    « Weekend »

Booked for the weekend. Hotel in really nice quiet place. Made really welcome upon arrival and was shown to a really nice room. Buffet style breakfast was really tasty. Pleasant garden area with seating under umbrellas if required. Definitely will visit again.

« Cycling the South downs way »

My second visit to this Hotel as it is well situated on the cycle route from Winchester to Eastbourne and I really enjoyed the stay and the friendly staff. The Carvery was excellent and so was breakfast and the service was fantastic, I was a little concerned I would be a under dressed as I was not carrying a lot on the Bike but the team made me feel really welcome and were happy to store my bike for me in an out building which was then locked overnight. A great stopping point where you can refuel in a really friendly atmosphere. See you again Rob

    « Home from home »

Whilst working in the area on secondment for 5 months I was fortunate to stay at this hotel. From the minute I checked in for the first time, the level of service, food and rooms were excellent. Firstly I would like to thank the staff for making me feel so welcome, all of them without fail were polite, courteous and so very helpful. Nothing was to much trouble, and they even went the extra mile when requested. Having been put into ' Eastgate ' on first arriving, I was very quick to request those rooms again ( particular favourite of mine was 310 ). They are large, spacious, and the beds are extremely comfortable. The food, well where do I start, this establishment is famed for its carvery and it's very easy to see why, with a choice of 4 meats, yorkies, normally two choices of potato, and countless veg it was exceptional. There were also the daily specials along with a vast variety of desserts to leave even the most hungry of travelers replete. I do however have a couple things f little moans which is why this place doesn't get a five from me, they are as follows: The target audience is the older generation and as such the piped instrumental music became tiresome after a short while, also there is no recognised bar, there is a little song near the restaurant, and a very outdated residents lounge, which has no atmosphere at all. Finally it is obvious, with the amount of work the staff are asked to do that this hotel is woefully understaffed, they work long and hard and are a credit to the owners. Five star infact. Would I stay here again absolutely, I do believe I might have made some friendships whilst staying here, and look forward to seeing them again sometime soon.

    « Better than just a cavery... »

There is a formula to the cavery experience here and judging by the packed restaurant these guys are getting it right. Here we go, helpful and friendly staff get you off to a good start. It is very quick to get seated and into the generous starter buffet. The starters are quite novel - fill your plate from a Smorgers Board of cold meats, smoked Salmon, salads and treats. When you have finished go to cavery where you will have a choice of about six meats and several other dishes such as curry, devilled kidneys, sausages in onion gravy and vegatarian alternatives. Get your plate filled and the staff take your plate to your table - nice touch. If this isn't enough go to the desert buffet and make your mind up from a large selection of cakes, fruit and gateau. If you have any room left finish with a cup of coffee. The prices are reasonable, staff very nice and food good. So what more could you ask for? Well only that on a warm day is does get quite stuffy and hot inside and they could open the windows, which I suppose they would if you asked nicely! Always worth a visit.

    « Charity walking weekend »

Cannot praise the staff enough for making our trip so perfect. Hotel clean and comfortable. Breakfast and evening meal had a great selection to choose from, suit all tastes . The staff professional , friendly and went beyond the call of duty fir our party. If you have time visit St Marys House two minute walk from hotel. Historic house and beautiful garden, unexpected find.

« An excellent one nights stay »

We stayed here for one night on 29th April as we were visiting a relative in Worthing. From start to finish our stay was most enjoyable. The staff were extremely friendly and very efficient. The room was extremely clean and spacious with a very good bathroom. We had a Carvery in the evening which was excellent and such a nice touch of going to choose what you wanted and then it actually being bought to the table . The choice of sweets was amazing , again breakfast the following morning was excellent. We will definitely come again and this time extend our visit. A special mention for the Manager that evening who was very informative about the hotel.

    « One night stay. »

What a fantastic hotel this was. All the staff were so friendly and helpful from the time of arrival to our departure. Very clean and a good size room, food exceptional. In the evening, four of us had the carvery, and there was also a great choice of starters, cold and hot, plus an amazing choice of desserts!! It was hard to decide which one to go for!!! The waiter was very efficient and after the meal, took us on a quick tour of the unique dining areas, and was able to tell us some of the history of the hotel. Breakfast was also extremely good, again with plenty of choice. We will certainly return, and hope for better weather so we can explore the surrounding countryside.

« Comfortable Hotel, Good Food »

The Old Tollgate Hotel was another staging post on our hike along the South Downs Way and proved ideal accommodation. Our room was clean and spacious with good ensuite facilities, and the dinner in the evening from the carvery offered a wide selection, with a fine choice of starters as well. The breakfast buffet offered an extensive choice and set us up very nicely for the next stage of our walk. Throughout our stay, staff service standards were very good. Highly recommended.

    « Overnight stay »

Booked 3 rooms for a Friday night as we were meeting up with friends. All 3 rooms close together in the Eastgate building which is in another building just outside, off restaurant. Our room was lovely, very clean, powerful shower, bed too soft for me but not complaining as ok for one night. We had booked for dinner & met in bar, we sat in comfy chairs just behind bar area. As with other BW hotels there isn't a lounge bar as such. Ben in the bar was superb. Credit to the team. Food was good, carvery was tasty and good vegetarian options too. Puddings were lovely too!! Walking distance from Steyning, around 10-15 min walk. Worth a wander round castle ruins opp hotel too. View from top worth it. Reasonably priced, would definitely book again

    « Excellent service »

Should be 4*. Has a 3* rating excellent rooms with very good restaurant. Convenient for Brighton and the staff are always helpful. We have stayed here several times and whenever going to Brighton book here.

    « just a one night stay »

lovely room, nice quiet situation. Breakfast was great, plenty of choice on offer, best coffee for a while! dinner was Carvery but we decided to go for a stroll and found a Pub, Indian and Chinese a short walk away. Bramber lovely little place.

    4
    « Cosy comfortable hotel »

We felt so comfortable here. Room was very clean and had everything we needed apart from iron/ironing board. Tea coffee biscuits choc. Beds so comfy. Restaurant was good but maybe more choice in bar menu. Carvery was lovely but didn't want every night. Staff nice. Two in particular stand out - Jen and Ben. My only complaint is perhaps a nicer choice of breads. We will be back here. I would recommend. The area is so peaceful but close to Brighton and other towns or villages.

    « Parking »

Overall a great place. But one disabled parking bay is ludicrous. I think I've only got parked in it once. Now you've put two electric charging points right by the door. So can't park there either. I find this quite a let down. As I don't want to come in in my wheelchair as it's to hard to get around the restaurant. Back to the food. Chef lovely, waitresses not so friendly. Young barman was lovely. They seem to give men bigger servings then the women. I asked for all veg, but it was very sparse. Would like to visit again. But slightly put off for a while.

    « Brighton & Hove Albion fixture 31.03.18 »

A place full of character in a quaint area ideal for Brighton. A very nice room in the annexe comfortable and spacious. The car very was very good and with the Friday promotion it was good value. Plenty of choice and generous portions given. The breakfast was also excellent. The down side was that we discovered a dried blood stain on the bed sheet in one of the beds. We were promised by Tuesday that we would be contact by Tuesday but it hasn't happened. But would recommend the hotel and we will stay again foe next season's fixture.

    5
« Pleasant, clean, good all round »

Stayed for one night, parking and check-in easy, staff pleasant and capable. Room clean and a reasonable size. We didn't have our evening meal there because the carvery menu didn't seem to cater much for vegetarians but the breakfast was fine (coffee more than excellent). Would definitely be more than happy to stay here again.

    5
« Dining with friends in the excellent Carvery... »

We were and are impressed by the quality and quantity and the price. I meet with friends their each month. The bar is small and one always waits for service but hey!... one can't have everything. Popular place have busy bars. Lots of parking - I am disabled with mobility issues and more disabled parking would be welcome as well as improved access to toilets (downstairs!) but if I restrict my review to what I go there for... i.e. to meet and eat it is a great place.

« Cold Weather but warm hotel Bramber »

Had 2 night stop at the Old Tollgate, breakfast very plentiful, room nice and warm. Dinner a bit slow when we ordered bar menu, instead of carvery but all staff very friendly and near by Steyning a lovely little town with independent shops and nice little museum

    « A funeral visit »

A great hotel ideally located, equidistance from Brighton/Worthing (8miles) very close to the South Downs National Park and superb countryside. The hotel is smart, the room we had was modern and well equipped and there is plenty of parking. It can be al little noisy when hosting a wedding but this did not bother us. The buffet food in the restaurant and the breakfast were both excellent and the prices quite reasonable. All the staff were friendly and helpful and we recommend this hotel/restaurant with full confidence. Give it a try you will not be disappointed.

    « Celebration meal, not! »

We went to the Old Tollgate as a birthday treat for our son. We'd been before and been very impressed, but how standards have slipped! Seated in a side room with no charm, the carvery meal was very disappointing with thinly cut, skimpy amounts of meat and a lack lustre selection of vegetables, stuffing that was sprinkled over the plate and a meagre amount of gravy ladled over. Service was bad - we ended up telling our son to get his sweet, 15 minutes later we were still waiting for the plates to be collected,. The sweet selection looked as though it had been left over from afternoon tea, rocky road, coconut ice and brownies and the hot dessert, chocolate bread and butter pudding looked dried and shrivelled. All in all, a great disappointment, we won't be returning in a hurry.

    « Wedding Anniversary gift »

My Wife and I have been coming here to the restaurant for dinner for quite some time now, and have been saying that we should try to stay here for a weekend. So as a Anniversary gift for my wife, I booked a nights stay. It was a fantastic nights stay. The room was very clean and tidy and very luxurious. If you don't fancy a carvery for dinner then there are other places within walking distance in the high street. Staff were fantastic and helpful. And the breakfast was great. We will definitely stay again!

« Great stay in the South Downs »

This was our first visit, we stayed for a couple of nights and had a great time. All the staff were friendly and helpful. We were satisfied with our room which was very comfortable. Breakfasts were really good and we chose to eat in the restaurant in the evenings. The carvery choice was good and there were other dishes to chose from. The hotel is well located to use as a base from which to walk the South Downs Way and we had a quick look at Bramber Castle and Church. We booked direct through Best Western which proved to be the best deal. Overall a really good stay to celebrate a special birthday. Won't need an excuse to return.

« SCW out and about »

The management, despite the vagaries of the past week, have been unwilling to move, my booking (Not refund). which l do find rather unreasonable given the nature of my travel requirements, not to mention the advise not to travel unless essential.

    3
    « GOOD VALUE HOTEL »

Stayed at the hotel for two nights during a visit to family. Very comfortable room but not part of the main building, not the most ideal getting to the restaurant during inclement weather. The restaurant is mainly a carvery type with food prepared in advance and a self service system in operation. We did not eat in the evening but did have breakfast. Food not as good as a freshly prepared meal to order but still ok and a good and varied selection on offer. As an overall trip we had very good value for money.

« Nice Hotel and Rooms But....... »

Very nice hotel and rooms could not fault. Staff very friendly. But was let down that the food is only Carvery and no other choice not what you what on 2 nights .There is no where to sit and just have a Drink or Coffee. All Space is give over to people attending the Carvery no Consideration to Hotel Residents. The Lounge was changed to provide more carry space in the afternoon.

    « Lovely hotel »

We stayed here for 2 nights while enjoying some of the wonderful walks in the area. The staff were excellent from start to finish. Our room was a good size and very comfortable., and we had 2 very good nights sleep. The food in the restaurant was very good, and the waiting staff were friendly and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would not hesitate to recommend it.

« clean and tidy room - lovely hotel »

We stayed for two nights - greeted by warm and friendly staff at reception, Room was lovely - very spacious king size bed and also a lovely double sofa bed for my son. Clean and tidy. Food was great. Carvery was very good value and delicious. Breakfast even better - good choice. Also good location and parking. Pretty village.

    « A Sunday lunch is a quality restaurant »

You have to book up well ahead for Sunday Lunch at this restaurant as it is so popular. It operates on a buffet/ carvery basis but the food quality was excellent. The service levels was equally good, and throughout the staff were both helpful, polite and friendly, indeed they were a credit to the Hotel. Based on my experience I have no hesitation in recommending the hotel as a venue for Sunday Lunch, an experience that will remain with me for a many a day.

« Wonderful stay - wished we could have stayed longer! »

Great parking and wonderful location - so much beautiful walking in the local area. Reception was warm and friendly, a beautiful carver on the Sunday - menu delicious. Room was big, spacious, clean and tidy - so warm and the bed was massive and cosy! Alice my beautiful partner so small she was hidden in the bed! wifi - excellent. We had food locally as a stunning Indian near by. Check out easy and straightforward - thank you team. PS Alice wanted one of your cookies on reception lol - staying here again!

    « Very Enjoyable Stay »

My Husband and I stayed here for 2 nights B&B last weekend, and had a very positive experience of a first visit there. We were greeted warmly, and checked in by a very helpful young lady who explained the breakfast times and the way to our room ( 101), which was in a separate building a few paces from the main hotel entrance and reception. The room, with a separate seating area ( 2 comfortable sofas, a coffee table, and an extra TV) was warm and inviting, and very nicely presented. The bathroom was well stocked with ample toiletries, snowy white soft towels, a non-slip mat for the bath etc There was plenty of space on the basin unit for our own bits and bobs, and the heated towel rail kept the towels and the bathroom snuggly warm. A good thing in freezing cold February! A useful folder in the room gave plenty of information about the hotel and the surrounding area, and the hospitality tray was generously stocked with teas, coffees, hot chocolate sachets, biscuits, milks and creamers. The bed linens were spotless, the pillows smelt fresh, and there is evidently a very high standard of housekeeping in place. The cold buffet breakfast choices were plentiful, with cereals, juices, pastries, fresh and preserved fruits, cheeses and charcuterie, and the hot selection was plentiful, wide ranging and obviously good quality ingredients, frequently replenished so things didn't sit in the dishes for too long. The black pudding and sausages were especially good, and the scrambled eggs were creamy and just perfect. Pots of tea or coffee are served to the table by cheerful friendly staff, who are happy to bring more if wanted. It's been some years since I stayed in a Best Western, and in those days, some of them were a bit ? hit and miss?, but I know that we will most certainly return to this one. It was a pleasure from check-in to check out.

    « A little confusing.. »

We booked a table for 5 for a Sunday lunchtime. My partner and I only really wanted a main but the set meal price of £22.50 seemed to be the only option for a Sunday. We heard other diners have the 'system' explained to them for self service but we seemed to be bypassed. My partner and I took a small starter, main and dessert and another of our party just had a starter and dessert. The food was excellent but the fixed charge did make it a little pricey. My only other niggle was that none of the starters or desserts were identified at all. Some were obvious but desserts we had to work out from the menu and the starters were a little like pot luck for some dishes. As it was so busy it was a little difficult to ask as other diners were hurrying us along the line. That said, the staff were very friendly and again, the food was excellent.

« Still the place to visit!!!!! »

I as you know have reviewed this hotel before, but I am a great believer if something maintains or gets better you let people know.1st piece of advice go to the best western site they do some really good deals,My wife and I have stayed here many times each time we have had a different room but this has never affected the quality.we have had rooms with heated flooring in the bathroom + all the usual trimmings,we also had a suite with a separate seating stroke tv room ,this time we ended up with a four poster bed and a good sized Jacuzzi in the bedroom & a bathroom separate with a good shower it included a fridge and all the usual bottled water tea / coffee etc. we decided to eat in the evening and found I was spoilt for choice with the starters fresh prawns / mussels/mackerel and many other choices. The restaurant is based on the carvery which my wife had there are other choices of which I chose the devilled kidneys which were excellent I was so full I could not take advantage of the selection of desserts. after an excellent nights sleep and a Jacuzzi (yes its big enough for two) we went for breakfast we were met by jade who let us know what was going on basically a buffet for all the continental /fresh fruit and I do mean fresh my choice was fresh dates /figs probably tinned prunes but very good ones and a yoghurt,my wife helped herself to a full English which she totally destroyed she is normally very fussy. They also have some extra's Fresh Kippers/Scrambled egg & Salmon and my personal favourite Smoked Haddock and you choice of eggs mine being poached which were done to perfection. In closing I would once again like to thank Jade for her professionalism and friendliness and to also say if you want fine dining go somewhere else and pay a lot more money but for good quality food cooked well I don't think you can go far wrong my wife and I will be back

« Delightful Gem in the Country...! »

My wife and I stayed at this delightful little hideaway on a Saturday night. We were here on the goodwill and recommendations of a our good friends who were taking us out for a diner and overnight stay The hotel is a re modernised building. That being new additions onto a much older building. A lovely mix wood, stone and modern appliances. There is ample onsite parking including electric vehicle charging points. First ones I have seen. The location is rural and just off the A283 slightly off the Castle Lane Roundabout. Great access to the nearby A27 so great road links. The hotel is comprised of two buildings. One part of the hotel is attached to the restaurant and bar. See my separate review. This also contains the reception area and as such you can move between bar, restaurant and hotel in comfort. The other part of the hotel is a separate building with a short five meter, or fifteen foot travel across the car park access. Outside the summer months you may want to consider requesting what building you want your room in. We stayed in the main building and consider reception to be very friendly, efficient, and professional. We were booked in in short order and directed to our rooms. There is a rather handy lift if you have mobility issues, otherwise a short flight of stairs does the job. Our room was a double. Very pleasantly appointed. Exceptionally clean and tidy. Adequately spacious. You wouldn't get claustrophobic here. More amenities than you would expect. TV and dresser with a good sized and well lit mirror. Very important to my wife. Manual heating control. Stocked mini bar. Including bottled water and, ample tea/coffee making facilities. The bathroom was large and very white. No possibility of any dirt or mould hiding here. Once again very clean and fresh. Plenty of towels on the heated towel rail. Was a pretty good night's sleep. The bed was very comfortable. Only down point for me was I though the pillows were rubbish. I only include this because both out friends also mentioned it a breakfast the following morning so I am confident it is not my opinion alone. That said it would not stop me coming back and I fully intend to do so. I'll just bring my own pillow. All in all. A lovely gem in the countryside with a fantastic restaurant attached.

« Great if you like a good roast dinner and pretty good even if you dont »

Nice rooms that could be considered a little dated but clean, tidy and comfy so no complaints from me. Staff are are all very good, both friendly and professional and whilst the menu could be considered limited (or less you love a roast dinner) there is a great choice and all are delicious. The roast beef is extremely good ! Free WiFi ( which is good enough to watch Netflix etc) mini bar in room ( it's not cheap) is a nice addition and it all adds up to an enjoyable stay. Good parking and easy to find. Recommended

    « A comfortable and welcoming hotel »

We had a very pleasant three night stay here in an 'executive room' (with a pair of small sofas). Cooked breakfast was buffet style (very good quality, though inevitably if the food has been sitting on the counter for a while it can begin to dry), and the evening meal 'carvery +' - as good a carvery as we have ever had. The staff were welcoming and helpful, the room clean and presentable, parking easy, and lots to do within an easy drive. Outstanding value,

« Lovely way to relax »

We are BW Platinum card holders and visited to have a relaxing break during the week between the excitement of Christmas and New Year celebrations. For the first time ever we were upgraded - we were given a room with a four-poster bed. The room was comfortable, warm and quiet. We were also given a goody bag for the first time ever - it contained a bottle of water and two tiny, but delicious, apparently home made mignon cakes. We were welcomed warmly at reception. When we realised that there were no toiletries in the bathroom the receptionist very quickly remedied the situation by bringing them to our room. The large bathroom is fitted with a beautiful shower area and a spa bath. Sadly, there was a bad odour emanating from somewhere so we didn't try the spa bath as we felt it might have come from there. When we reported the odour in the morning the housekeeper and receptionist said it would be dealt with asap. The room being used for breakfast was full when we came down, but we were immediately shown to the separate lunch/dining room and a table was set for us. We loved the initiative shown. Breakfast was delicious and we really look forward to a return to the Old Tollgate Hotel in the near future.

    « 5 night stay. »

We stayed over Christmas & thoroughly enjoyed every moment. Excellent staff, nothing is too much trouble, always service with a smile. All food excellent. Building, decoration, facilities, etc., all very good.

    3
    « Lounge unavailable »

We spent two nights over Christmas at the Best Western Old Tollgate Hotel and initially it seemed very good. When we initially looked round when booking this stay there was a nice lounge and we thought we would be able to sit there and have a drink and read our books. However on Christmas Day we wanted to sit in the lounge but we were told it was not available as it was been used as a dining room. So we asked if there was anywhere else to sit and we were told no so we spent a large part of the day just sitting in our room. We certainly did not pay a lot of money to sit in our room and we might just as well have stayed at home. We will never ever visit this establishment at Christmas again.

  • 5
    « Excellent restaurant »

We visited the Tollgate's restaurant for lunch on a Saturday. We enjoyed our visit & the food was delicious. You help yourself from a buffet bar of starters, followed by the carvery & selection of desserts. There are other main meals if you don't fancy the roast. The vegetables were cooked in butter but they are able to provide these without butter if you ask. There were a good selection of starters & desserts. We thought it was excellent value for money & will definitely go back.

    « 2 night stay »

the room was spotless with ample storage spaces, my room had a table and 2 chairs, dressing table, wardrobe and freeview tv amongst other furniture. a really soft and comfy bed. Breakfast was buffet style and extensive, with fruit, cereal, English and european.

« Great place with just simply the best staff »

I stayed here on Monday night after a very long day at work. The Hotel is simply fantastic, great rooms simply the best food anyone could ask for. Now the staff I was made to feel very welcome when I arrived, bar staff couldn't do enough for me. The chef was knowledgable and very helpful and very friendly. After the meal I went for a quick drink in the bar. Staff once again couldn't do enough to make me feel welcome from the on duty manageress to Alexia who was one of the staff. Alexia was a sweet girl who took time just to say hello and smiled which was very welcome after the hard day I had finished. Well done and I promise I will be back to enjoy this lovely hotel again.

    4
« Lovely hotel, helpful staff »

My husband and I stayed for one night and called ahead to ask if they could do a vegan meal. Although it was a carvery, the chef made us a lovely vegan curry with rice, and staff were genuinely interested in whether we'd enjoyed it. There were enough fruity options to have dessert, too, and breakfast was also no problem. The rooms are nice and spacious and the staff are really friendly. Will definitely go back.

    « We'll be going back. »

We have been here many times for the food, it is always consistant. My birthday weekend away was unfortunately was marred by my health getting bad, but we will return to complete our good stay with them.

« Lovely hotel, great value »

We stayed here visiting children in Hove. We parked the car and forgot about it for the whole weekend. We took a taxi into Hove and it's only 15 minutes and about £25. We could have taken a bus from outside the hotel into Hove. The room was excellent ,a good size and spotlessly clean. Breakfast is a buffet, well cooked and tasty. We had dinner one evening at the hotel and it was very good. A buffet with lots of choice and our vegetarian daughter had plenty of options. Restaurant and bar staff were efficient and friendly. The hotel is excellent value and much cheaper than staying in Brighton or Hove and paying extortionately for parking We will certainly stay here again when we visit Hove..

    5
    « Awesome Carvery »

Visited the pub for lunch - granted we had a voucher but in my opinion it was one of the best carverys I've ever had. Everything was beautifully cooked and food was plentiful. With or without a voucher I would thoroughly recommend this pub.

« Good value of money »

My husband and I stayed here for the weekend just gone and were pleasantly surprised. The location is quaint and, for the price that we paid (which compares favourably to anywhere in Brighton/Hove) we were really pleased with the hotel itself. Our room was spacious enough with everything you need. A little tired, maybe, and the bathroom could do with a revamp. But everything was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was of a good standard - a decent selection of cooked and continental breakfast. Buffet style but cooked breakfast was kept fresh and hot. Staff were all very nice and happy to help. We were attending a show in Hove - about 20 mins away by car. We found this to be a very handy location to keep the cost of the weekend down a bit. Only works if you are driving though unless you are happy to do a cab trip. Can't imagine there is any public transport at all later at night. Plenty of parking available.

« One of the best carveries in Sussex »

We have just had a very nice Sunday lunch at the Old Tollgate Restaurant. It has for many years been one of the top carveries in the area. The choice of food was excellent, well presented and well served. The only criticism I had was that the carrots were nearly cold. There is a price for 3 course Sunday lunch, which we found a bit expensive, as we only wanted 2 courses. However, the option was there for 3 courses..

    « Comfortable and inviting »

Reviews should always be kept in perspective, there is a balance between what you pay and therefore what you should expect... Having stayed in many hotels in the Brighton area I have to say the Old Tollgate stands out as representing exceptional value for money. Firstly, I love the convenience of ample free parking on site which seems like a basic offering for any hotel but is actually quite rare these days as operators seek to exploit the traveller or control their lack of parking space. The rooms at the Best Western Old Tollgate are spacious, clean and well appointed so if you have to be away from home at least you can be comfortable. The staff are welcoming and efficient, I have probably experienced more warmth on my travels but actually what really matters to me is that I get what I ask for when I ask for it and if the cost of that efficiency is a slightly less personal experience, that is fine with me. That does not mean that everyone at the Old Tollgate are robots, absolutely not the case. The food is good and there is an excellent variety that would suit most tastes. It is not fine dining, if you want that then you should be visiting the Ritz... This is good honest food and stands out as superior compared to the majority of the large hotel chains in Brighton in my experience. Overall, The Best Western Old Tollgate hotel is a really pleasant hotel that offers a peaceful and homely experience which I would not hesitate to recommend. It is my hotel of choice when on business in the Brighton area... Kudos to the staff and management who make this hotel what it is :- )

    « Carvery dinner »

We visited as a birthday treat for a carvery dinner early one evening. Unfortunately the meat and gravy was tepid and plates cool, but veg warm. I mentioned it to a waiter who said this would be fed back. I didn't wish to make a fuss as this was a birthday treat but very disappointing.

    « Exceeded expectations »

Very impressed with this hotel, our room was spacious (we had a suite), very comfortable and very clean. The breakfast, which was included in the price, had a very good selection of both hot and cold food, with a superb choice of fruit. Dinner was very good value for money. The staff, especially in the restaurant, were very pleasant and helpful, cheerful and smiley, nice to see. Unfortunately the internet wasn't working when we stayed, but there was a notice in reception advising guests of this fact, and it was beyond the hotels control. Lots of parking, and even charging points for electric cars. Overall incredibly good value for money, would certainly stay again.

« Excellent hotel, with very friendly staff »

This was our second visit to the Old Tollgate, and this latest stay was even better than the first. On arrival our Best Western Rewards membership was instantly recognised by the friendly receptionist. We had three rooms booked for the weekend, each of which were clean, comfortable and spacious, and the quietness of its location ensured a good nights sleep. There was the usual refreshment tray together with biscuits, and complimentary bottled water. Breakfast was a self-service buffet, and featured a large variety of both hot and cold dishes together with a selection of fresh fruit and fruit juices. Likewise the lunchtime carvery was absolutely fantastic, and a gastronomical delight. Large variety of meats, seafood, tonnes of vegetables and a large selection of starters and deserts made the meals a memorable experience. All twelve of family party made favourable comments about the overall quality of the carvery and selection of wines. In fact the number of diners both at lunch and in the evening is a testament to the popularity of the carvery. Both the chefs, serving staff, housekeeping, and receptionists were very friendly, professional and efficient, and all seemed keen to ensure guests and diners enjoyed themselves. It's worth visiting their website to see what discount vouchers are available with regards to the carvery. The hotel is situated next to Bramber Castle, and has a large car park. For those intending to visit nearby Brighton it's worth noting there is a frequent bus service from outside the hotel (Bus 2).

« Abundant food but not quality »

This is a lovely hotel within easy reach of Brighton but with no parking complications. Our room was very nicely appointed with comfy bed, good decorations and furniture, excellent bathroom. We were very pleased with the room. We dined in the carvery and this is the only choice although there are some non carvery options. The cold table starters were good but the carvery was disappointing. It was plentiful but everything except for the meat was rather dried out by 7:30. The meat was abundant but not very tasty. For the room quality, an a la carte restaurant would have been a better match but no doubt local economics dictate what draws the customers. I'd go back as it was so conveniently located.

Stayed here overnight while attending a 60th birthday party at nearby Wiston House. We arrived slightly earlier than had advised but our room was ready so were able to check in early.Very comfortable, spotlessly clean room and excellent choice of food available for breakfast. Staff very friendly.Would not hesitate to stay here again next time we are in the area.Thank you!

    « Excellent hotel »

We had a party of 10 for lunch on my 70th birthday and my wife and I stayed at the hotel overnight. The buffet lunch and breakfast could not be faulted and nor could our sizeable, comfortable room. Just one issue - the bathroom light could seemingly only be switched on from the hall - inconvenient for those middle of the night visits! The staff were all very pleasant and everywhere was spotlessly clean. The on-site parking facilities are excellent (even electric battery chargers!) and the garden and grounds are very pleasant. Bramber is a pretty village with access to all sorts of walks and the larger town/village of Steyning. The South Downs are very close and Brighton is not too far away.

« Lovely place to visit »

I visited this lovely carvery restaurant today with my elderly father. The staff were attentive, polite and bent over backwards. The food was fantastic. Clean and beautifully laid out. A totally relaxed restaurant and attention to detail. The food was delicious and I cannot wait to return. My dad who is quite fussy said it's now his favourite place to eat.

    « Still First Class!! »

We have been staying at this hotel regularly for the last 4/5 years and have always been highly impressed by the continuing high standards. All staff members are most friendly, helpful and polite. Nothing seems too much trouble. On my last visit I asked if foliage overhanging the steps to the garden could be trimmed, this was achieved within half an hour of my request. We have grown to like carvery food, plates are taken to the table by a member of staff who ensure you have all you need. The rooms are well appointed, I always ask for the Eastgate wing which is very comfortable. There are a good many hotels in the area, this is our favourite

Visiting Bramber to see St Marys House and castle ruins with group of U3A members and lunching at the Best Western Old Tollgate hotel. Had an excellent carvery meal and extremely good value. Service was good, all in all a very pleasaht experience.

    « Great location »

Stayed here for one night as a surprise for my birthday. Nice location, very convenient location, loads of parking and very popular as the car park was full upon arrival. Our room was large and comfortable and the ensuite had a walk in shower- excellent. The evening food is a carvery, not a fan but it was ok. Breakfast the next morning was chaotic due to the lack of staff and numbers of customers. there was one young man running around like a headless chicken trying his best, he was let down by the 2 other staff members who just ambled around . Would stay here again.

    « Great weekend »

A good place to stay for a couple of night within easy drive to Goodwood Revival. The room was large and in good order, with complimentary bottled water and tea/coffee and biscuits available. Room was over the main road but it wasn't too busy or noisy. Breakfast was very good with a good selection of cooked and cold food. Would stay again. Staff very good in hotel and restaurant.

Lovely Hotel, Clean and very comfortable. Great choice of food. Easy access to the seafront approx. 6 miles away and great for a stay near but not in Brighton. Very courteous staff. I would recommend.

    « A great stay »

Situated opposite the castle ruins at the entrance to a delightful Sussex village the hotel proved to be superb from the start to the end of our stay. The whole staff from reception to housekeeping were open, friendly and welcoming. Our elegantly decorated and spotlessly clean room had a four poster bed and spa bath together with an en suite and mini bar with an honesty account sheet. The evening meal was a carvery and we were glad that we booked on arrival as the restaurant was packed, such is its popularity. The carvery had a variety of cold starters; the usual cuts of meat, well cooked and served with a smile, and also specials such as confit duck legs, braised beef and curries; the desserts were largely cream based gateaux. The buffet breakfast had a wide choice of fresh fruit, cold meats and cheeses plus an array of ingredients to make up your own 'Full English'. The ease of site parking, access to a small secluded garden and the private residents' lounge made our stay truly stress free and relaxing. I have no hesitation in recommending the Old Tollgate to anyone wanting to explore West Sussex yet keep away from the bustle of the coastal towns.

« Great value for money »

Have just spent a night at this excellent hotel as part of a group of eight golfers. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff at reception who checked us in quickly and gave us the usual information about dining etc. We had a three course carvery evening meal, which was excellent, and a substantial buffet style breakfast. The bedroom was spacious, clean and not too hot! There was tea and coffee making facilities and complimentary bottles of water. The en suite bathroom was again quite large and appeared to have been refurbished recently. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone looking for accommodation fairly close to the Dyke and Pyecombe golf courses.

« Mid-week break near the Sussex coast »

We needed a quiet break for a few days and we were so glad that we chose The Old Tollgate Hotel. We booked a twin room, half board, for three nights and although the weather was not that good the warm welcome at The Old Tollgate made up for the lack of sunshine! Located in a very old village, complete with a castle, a river and various old buildings it is well worth a stroll to explore. Not far from Shoreham-by-sea with its harbour and shops and only a short drive to Brighton or if you like you can use the bus. The restaurant was amazingly good; plenty of variety, plentiful portions and plenty of help. The Hotel and Restaurant staffing levels were such that one never felt neglected or abandoned and we felt that nothing was too much bother when we asked. Housekeeping was also very good; I carried out my usual cleanliness test on the staircase hand-rail and it got full marks as it was NOT sticky (I have lost count of the number of times that I have touched a hand-rail and then wished I hadn't!). The room etc. were clean and well maintained. We are recommending "The Old Tollgate" to all our friends!!

« Delicious as per usual »

Another trip to my favourite restaurant and the food never fails to let you down. The surroundings, service and plethora of staters, roast meats and vegetables and sweets is outstanding and cooked perfectly, especially the beef which you won't find better anywhere else. The roasts are amazing and you can literally choose a cut of everything if you wish and as much vegetables that can fit on your plate. You can then take a seat back to where you were placed and have no fear of spilling your plate as it is bought to you. This is great service and really sets this restaurant apart from any other carvery I've ever frequented and experienced. Once you've finished your started and main save some room for the choice of sweet there is to offer. I always go for the crumble as it's delicious and a proper crumble with delicious custard, you simply cannot beat it. There is a separate private dinning room that you can book for a small party but you'd need to book weeks in advance for this room. In fact I would suggest that you made a booking for this place as it becomes extremely popular as the food will never let you done. I have no idea how this place can score anything but 5 as there is nothing bad that you can say about the place as you will, find out should you visit this place once Sunday afternoon.

    « Wedding venue »

We attended a friends wedding on a very hot day in August. The room where the ceremony was held was a little too small for the number of people attending the wedding but this could be more with our friends being optimistic about how many the room could hold. After we had our own areas for the reception as well as the garden (welcome on such a hot day). Staff were excellent and helpful. Sorry to hotel guests for the noise!

« Immaculately clean & comfortable. What more can you ask for? »

Excellent reception staff provided a suburb 'shop window' for a comfortable overnight stay at this hotel in beautiful Bramber. Immaculately clean room with a particularly impressive, and large, bathroom - followed by a plentiful & tasty breakfast. Although we didn't dine at the hotel the 'spread' looked excellent. We will make a point of doing so on our next visit. Strudwick of Worcester

« Super setting, super service »

We stopped at The Old Tollgate overnight. The hotel is beautifully presented with a leafy garden and the staff couldn't have been nicer. We had a lovely meal in the evening which definitely did not break the bank! A little walk into the village and up to the castle was very pleasant, too.

    « All Round Excellence »

We stayed at the Old Tollgate Hotel so that we could attend a funeral and the gathering at Steyning Cricket Club afterwards. I need an accessible bathroom and we require twin beds. The Old Tollgate offers these facilities. The accessible bathroom is compact and offers all the equipment needed for safe bathing etc. It is the best we have experienced. We are not fans of carveries, but the popularity of this one proved to us that there are exceptions to the norm. The choice of starters was extensive, and I found the provision of fish and seafood especially pleasing. The main courses were varied and of of high quality. The breakast was equally excellent and the service good. This is always the test of a good hotel. All the staff were attentive and pleasant at all times. The housekeeping was immaculate and a great deal of thought has clearly gone into the furnishing and lighting of our room. Unusually, the dressing table mirror had lighting on either side, which allowed for proper make-up activities. This is in strong contrast to many hotels, who overlook this simple necessity. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel. Our only regret is that it is not near enough our home in Gloucestershire to visit it easily.

« The Best Best Western »

Having decided to stay at a number of Best Western Hotels on our recent Tour of Britain we can honestly say The Od Tollgate in Bramber has to be right up there at the top. Our arrival and Check-In was dealt efficiently but in a warm & welcoming manner. The Rooms are available in either the Main Building or in the separate Annex. We had one of each & both were of a very high standard. Do not be put off by the Annex Building Ground Floor Rooms being 10 feet from the Main Road through Bramber as the well insulated Windows keep all but the faintest noise out. We opted for the Inclusive Breakfast & glad we did. The Buffet Style Breakfast will satisfy everyone & keep you going long into the day before you feel hungry again. Selection includes all the usual Cereal, Continental & Cooked English Food selection all well prepared & delicious... We chose to eat at the Restaurant for the Roast Dinner & that was simply Awesome...A choice of Meats accompanied by delicious perfectly cooked Veggies Served by enthusiastic & courteous Staff was a great way to finish of a busy day. The Rooms, although comparable with all other Hotel Rooms we just that bit better prepared with a touch of Quality. Parking is On Site, Free & copious so no need to worry about that either. Why stay in the 'run of the Mill' Cheap Hotels in the Centre of Towns with all the added costs when you can lodge at a Quality Best Western...I know where we will be will be choosing in the future.

    « Super Service »

We stayed for a few days and were welcomed promptly and shown to a well appointed room. Full breakfasts were excellently prepared and served from the carvery station. We didn't have the opportunity to test the carvery itself but it was certainly very popular judging from the numbers. When we left my wife forgot a small item, not particularly expensive and I telephoned to ask if it had been found and whether they could forward it to us. The response was excellent, very caring, with an efficient return call and promise to post it to us. We received it shortly and can only commend the level of personal attention displayed.

« Fabulous visit again, our home from home! »

The standards are just as high as on our past many visits. We stay here when visiting family and friends nearby and we feel its like a home from home! The breakfast is the best in any hotel we've stayed and and we were just sorry not to have had the opportunity this time to have a carvery meal (because of friends and family commitments) as we have always been impressed with the meals. Our room was in the secondary building which builders were working on however I can honestly say that we never heard any noise. I would never stay anywhere else when in this area. Thanks to all the staff at the Tollgate for a lovely stay.

    « Nice village stay »

Nice room in the Eastgate Annexe. Would have been a detached house once next door to the hotel, now refurbished into beautiful traditional looking hotel rooms. We stayed here to visit family in Brighton, and easy as the car park had plenty of spaces to drive in and out. Good breakfast each morning. Bramber village is very pretty and overlooked by the old castle ruins. There are a few eateries nearby and small shops, with Steyning a mile away. Free wifi and mini bar fridge were useful. Very pleasant stay.

    « Lovely break »

I couldn't recommend this hotel more highly. Spent 2 nights of a 5 daybreak here. The staff were friendly. The room was excellent. Wanted for nothing. Ate in the restaurant both nights very nice food. The breakfast was well presented and very nice. Would certainly return.

« Nice location for exploring Sussex coast »

Our room was in the Westgate block. Very well appointed room with great bathroom. The main hotel itself is a little dated and would benefit from a refurb. The hotels bar was not very welcoming as it had no seating or bar stools. The carvery was okay but I feel it would have been better to have the desserts SERVED to you rather than self service.

« Great stop over on South Downs way. »

Myself and 8 others were cycling the sdw in 2 days. This place made a great stopping point 60 miles from winchester. They had a locked store for the bikes a nice breakfast and were close to a nice curry house. All we needed.

« All you can want in a well priced hotel »

I've travelled the world and hardly ever found a hotel with a good shaving mirror! The old Tollgate did and I'd forgotten to pack my shaver! Apart from that this hotel has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere and staff keen to help. The rooms are refurbished to a very high stands and the shower was brilliant. No bath but a spacious room and comfortable king size bed. Set in beautiful gardens with a spacious car park. Ticks all the boxes. Loved it! And the breakfast!! Amazing!! Made a brilliant weekend for us

    « Disappointed »

My husband and I visited with the in-laws. Both of us had been allocated rooms in the 'Westgate' and both of us were very disappointed. The rooms were at the front on the road, the air conditioning was broken and so had to sleep with windows open (road noise). Couple this with the small beds, it meant that it was difficult to sleep. We did complain, and ask to be moved but was informed that the hotel was full and so we'd have to put up with it. The breakfast was hearty. However, we went home tired and feeling as if the £150 price tag wasn't fitting for the quality of our stay. Would we stay here again? Unlikely. Would we recommend? No. Do we feel as if the reviews on tripadvisor are an accurate reflection? Definitely not.

    5
« Spacious rooms and good location »

We've stayed at this hotel before. Our room was very spacious with a lovely large bathroom. Dinner and breakfast were on a carvery buffet basis with a very good choice of dishes. Service was efficient and helpful. A very good value one-night stay on a Sunday. Will use again if we're in the area.

    « Belated Anniversary »

It's the second time we've been to this hotel, however the first was at least 8 years ago. Since then they have refurbished the rooms. This stay we were given a room on the first floor and near the road, its a fairly busy road and, as I am a light sleeper this has been problematic, I can't have the window open at night because of the noise but reception supplied us with an electric fan and I have bought ear plugs, the noise does not affect my husband. The room is clean and spacious, the bed is a little on the soft side for our taste but it's comfy enough. The bathroom is large and modern a over bath shower with a glass door. As with all Best Western hotels there is tea and coffee making facilities and mini bars in all rooms. They have room service menus and a laundry service If you so wish. The breakfast selection is plentiful, with a full continental and cooked selection, If you have room later they will supply you with afternoon tea but be warned that if you have booked for dinner you will either need to have a late sitting or hollow legs as the choice and amount of food you're about to consume will 'beat' you. Dinner is lovely, if you've booked 'dinner, bed and breakfast ' you can serve yourself a selection of starters including a choice of soup, shell on prawns, fresh and smoked salmon, pate and many more, then a full, served Carvery with so much meat that, as a true carnivore, I was in heaven. There are other options if you don't fancy the roast ( why would you!) If, after you have climbed Mount Everest, and you still have room you can go and serve yourself from at least 10 (mainly homemade)desserts which change daily, trifle, tarts, tiramisu, cheesecake, fresh fruit cocktail and more. Would we come back again? Yes but we would chose a room away from the road.

    4
    « Lovely stay »

We had a beautiful executive king room on the first floor in the main building of the hotel. It happened to be one of the hottest nights of the year and there was no air conditioning. (We could have asked for a fan from reception, but our experience of fans is that the constant whirring impairs sleep.) We did sleep well with the windows wide open though. The recently refurbished shower-room was a joy to use. Breakfast was plentiful and we hope to return.

    4
    « Beautiful village setting! »

We recently stayed here for a night while visiting family in Brighton and really enjoyed the experience. The hotel is in an ideal spot in a pretty village overlooked by a Norman castle and church. Lovely gardens to relax in, we had coffee served out there as we arrived early and drinks in the evening. We thought the carvery was very good value as was breakfast. Our room had recently been refurbished with a super large bathroom and shower. However( like the previous reviewers ) we found the reception staff rather sullen and unhelpful. We plan to visit in the future and hope to find the welcome much warmer. This really is a great area to spend some time. The castle and church are impessive and there are many lovely walks beginning in Bramber.

    « weekend stay »

We have just had a pleasant weekend at Old Tollgate, with a comfortable room and - mostly - friendly staff. However, when we checked out this morning the account which Jenny gave me was obviously incorrect and I pointed out to her that we had not been charged for dinner/wine/coffee on Saturday evening. She disagreed, but I showed her the omission and she collected some paper work from the back office and saw that the charge for us had been allocated to another guest. With a very poor grace, she produced a new account which I settled - not a word of thanks from Jenny and I suggest a short course of charm school wouldn't come amiss! The other receptionist, who I gather has only been at the hotel for two months, is much more customer-friendly. One small matter regarding our room - 215: the hand basin is far too small for a bathroom - it is more suitable for a cloakroom - and the tap is far too large for the basin. Loo roll holder needs re-siting as it is much too near the back wall.

« Good food and beautiful surondings »

This modern hotel and restaurant in a traditionally themed building has the feeling of a country club.. The staff are polite and helpful and the Carvery is good value and very traditional with a large choice of vegetables on offer. The drive out to Bramber is through beautiful countryside

    « Lack of Atmosphere. »

The hotel, room and staff were very good. Although the welcome at Reception could have been more friendly. We ate in the restaurant in the evening, it was a carvery. A good choice of of Roast meats, but a poor choice of Vegetables. So if your like me and don't like peas and red cabbage that left me with Roast potato's and carrots. We also had breakfast, sadly the fried food had been kept hot for sometime. The fried eggs were hard and unappetising, as was the bacon. Both my wife and myself found the atmosphere flat and we agreed that we would not stay there again.

    « May 17 visit »

An excellent hotel with lots of character. I absolutely loved our room. The garden was lovely, ideal for having a nice cool drink in the sunshine after the long drive down from Leeds. The restaurant was very good too. Carvery for the main course with a choice of other home made main courses. The starters were a buffet of very nice dishes including lots of seafood it wS excellent. I never tried the deserts much to my disappointment as I was too full but they looked very nice. The staff were very helpful too. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

    « Very welcoming , good food »

This was always a favourite of mine when I was a boy, aka 25 years ago !! It's still a nice treat and whilst it has changed owners and is now managed within a group. It's is still the same, in fact it's up a few levels. The hotel seems on par with what you would expect. The food and service is above par. There are various offer available mid week which make this a not to be missed dinner! Skip lunch and feast here!!!

    « Birthday Lunch »

Invited to share in a birthday lunch, large party of us. Lunch was well organised, service was good and the meal was excellent. The choices of food available were very good and lots to choose from. Look forward to returning on our own for a meal.

    « Conveniently located hotel »

The Old Tollgate is conveniently located in a small pretty village with excellent off-road parking. We recently stayed 4 nights in the Eastgate annexe in a quiet, clean king-size ground floor bay-windowed room with a spacious ensuite, and few extras, including ironing facilities and safe. Access was through a lovely secluded well cared for garden to the main building. There was a good selection at breakfast - eat as much as you like. We had 3 evening meals from the carvery (look out for special offers and vouchers), but there are eating places nearby. We found the service to be mixed -some welcoming and helpful, but it would have gained more stars if it had been consistent and more personalised. If you are visiting Brighton centre - suggest using Park and Ride at Withdean Sports Complex Car Park BN1 5JD (free parking - pay on bus or use concessionary bus pass!). Convenient location for coastal towns, the Downs and places of interest, including National Trust.

    « Comfortable & close to Brighton & Hove »

Just eight miles from Brighton this lovely hotel was perfect for our visit. Lots of parking, well landscaped with a sunny garden area. Pleasant room with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits & a comfortable bed. Nice ensuite shower with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion and a small hair drier. We had breakfast, lots of choice, good selection of fruit, yoghurt, cereal, croissants, toast and a very good cooked breakfast. With friends and relatives nearby would definitely use this hotel again.

    5
    « Quality »

Very pleasantly surprised with this Best Western hotel, nothing like a standard lodge and the food was excellent with great choices and fresh cooked quality food. The carvery is justifiably recommended by many guests returning there. Excellent location just outside Steyning for good road access and bus links to Brighton (don't even think about taking your car in there), park and ride at the Withdean Sports Complex is the best option if driving.

« Not very pleasant people »

First room, food superb but the staff especially the receptionist most miserable person one could imagine. Travelled nearly 400 MILEs at a cost of up to £500 to stay and not word of welcome first thing they going to charge my card £50 per day to cover what we spent. We refused to allow The staff reflected the receptionist nobody spoke and they acted like robots, awful feeling Things thawed out later after I had complained the operation is in dicks days One expects better treatment when paying a premium price

    « Short stay »

Stayed at this hotel on a Saturday night as a couple for a short stay. On arrival found the receptionist approachable and helpful. Shown to our room. The room was of a standard I would expect for a 3* hotel. It was clean and tidy with the usual selection of tea/coffee making etc. Bathroom was quite spacious and well stocked with shampoo etc. The shower was very good with a powerful easily controlled temperature. The bed we had was reasonably comfortable but I personally found the pillows a bit hard. We had both evening meal and breakfast during our stay. This is a carvery restaurant so the selection was as you would expect. The evening meal was pleasant and plentiful. There were some other choices than the carvery but slightly limited. Desserts we found a good choice and very nice. The hotel is a very old building and lots of small rooms for private parties. One big disappointment was the bar area. Other than the seating in the restaurant there was almost nowhere to sit and have a drink. Staff were helpful and service was good. Overall - A pleasant hotel with pub style food.

    « Good hotel »

Just had six nights at this hotel, although not a bad place to stay room was spacious and comfortable I would have to say that if you are not a fan of carvery there is very little other choice, the food that was available was of good quality and plentiful but after a couple of nights became very boring. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only other complaint I had is if there is any kind of function on then there is nowhere to go if you are a resident, whilst there a wedding was in progress and every room and even the garden was taken up, and one night there was a birthday party and it appeared that all the waiting staff were taken up attending to them and residents were left waiting to get water or drinks. Because of these points I would not choose to stay here again.

    « Great Stay »

Sadly, we could only stay one night. This is a lovely hotel. We had a large room with comfortable beds and a large bathroom. The restaurant is cozy and the staff is very friendly and welcoming. Our dinner was delicious and the portions were generous. Breakfast the next morning was just as nice with a full English breakfast.

    « A good Roast Dinner »

Quality food, generous portions, good choice and spacious dining. Other options if you are not a fan of roasts although you would be missing the main event.Help yourself to starters, puddings and hot desserts.

Three course carvery lunch, wonderful wonderful wonderful. Great selection. Will definitely return. Friendly and helpful staff Not rushed and very leisurely Definitely need to book and i believe that you can download a money saving voucher

    « Exorbitant Extras »

Popped in for an early evening meal here before an appointment nearby. Helpful staff seated me in the restaurant. I opted for the Main Course offer of £7.25 for the carvery, but self served myself with a bowl of soup as a starter. The food was tasty and well cooked. When I came to pay my bill I discovered a charge of £6.50 for the soup, which is exorbitant, particularly when compared with the main course price. I enjoyed my meal but the resultant 'sting in the tail' bill left a nasty taste in my mouth. Watch the extras!

    « Enjoyable meal »

Been here a few times ,returned for a friends anniversary. You can choose either 1,2 or 3 course. 3course was £26.50 .you can go help yourself to as much starter as you like ,also dessert. The main mostly Roast but does have a few specials and a veg option. Then you are served your meat and veg ,the staff will then take your food to your table . I would recommend this place . The Afternoon Cream Tea is amazing as well

    « Could be better ... »

We used to come here often, but it went down hill abit so we decided to give it another go - so after a year we came back for another meal.... The starters have not improved unfortunately as they don't seem to have any salads or peeled prawns like they used to but the main meals are lovely. All dishes are well-cooked, delicious and nicely presented. Choices are good and the desserts are good too (although it is difficult to distinguish the different desserts from the board list)! Staff are hard working and most are helpful ... although we had to ask for our drinks twice and also our bill twice at the end!! Atmosphere/decor good and could well be a lovely eatery once again with alittle more effort. Good but wouldn't rush back...

    « birthday lunch »

We went as a table of 7 for father in law's 89th birthday. We were seated promptly and were well looked after by Flo. In spite of the fact that there was a wedding reception booked in and the buffet was busy, our table was well looked after. There was a lift to the loos which the rather wobbly FIL appreciated. Only small negative was that the vegetables were undercooked but I prefer that to the opposite. On arriving home we were called by Keith to advise that there was an oversight on our bill with regards to the deposit that they would immediately resolve and credit back to the card account. As always, The Old Tollgate never disappoints.

    « Fantastic little gem »

I stayed at this hotel mainly because I could not find another that was available and so was not expecting anything fantastic however this hotel totally changed my opinion, set in a great little village with a few hotels and great restaurants.

    « Great stay! »

The hotel is very welcoming. The reception building is characterful with a nice homely feel, including the bar area and restaurant. We had the carvery meal, 2 courses for £16.50 which was very good value, it's a very popular restaurant and busy on the night, I would recommend booking. Our room was clean and spacious and we all enjoyed a peaceful nights sleep. Breakfast was fabulous, hot and plentiful. We were a party of 10 and all said they would return, the village within minutes walk is so pretty, we can't wait to return.

    « A little gem of a hotel! »

We stayed on a Sunday night as we were attending a funeral the following day. From the moment you drive into the car park, first impressions were very impressive! Every staff member was extremely helpful and welcoming, especially the Chef called James. James was extremely friendly and chatty and made sure that we were happy with everything. The room we stayed in was 106 and the room was huge! It was lovely and comfortable and a pleasure to sleep in. I would highly recommend a stay and we will certainly be returning!

« Function Room for Post Funeral social gathering »

Well set out, nice food, staffed well with exception to one female staff member who needs to attend a people skills programme. I used my e-cigarette and was rudely & officially (in a loud voice) from quite a distance told 'there is no smoking' !! I picked up the e-cigarette & politely said 'it's not a cigarette' in case she couldn't see, but she continues to very rudely (again very loud voice) 'including those, it says so clearly on the front door'!! Then marched off & whispered to the waiter pointing at me. I am always very considered regarding this 'issue' & never use in the restaurant or anywhere where it may be misconstrued. Where there are children etc. This was the private function room. Friends & family. A post funeral gathering. No I did not see the notice. No Smoking has been around for so long now, it's a given. No one reads those notices. I was politely requested on one other occasion, in a pub, that the rule also applied to e-cigarettes. Polite, quiet, with a smile, no fuss, no admonishment as if I were some low life. My table companions, yesterday, also commended on her rude attitude & were quite shocked.

« As Good As Ever »

This hotel was recently upgraded by Best Western to a 'PLUS' designation, and well-deserved too. Nice comfortable bed, pleasant room. decent bathroom (although toilet cistern takes an age to refill - management know about this). Excellent breakfast, but sad to see kippers and haddock are now extra-cost items. Plenty of other offerings, all of good quality. Can't comment on dinner, as we don't really like carvery.

« Service was all I could have wanted! »

From reception to restaurant, from bar to room, all was tip top, including the smiles. Clean and comfy; well kept and smart (including all the staff). Thank you to everyone. A business trip where for similar in future, the hotel speaks for itself!

    « Modern rooms, 1970s catering »

This hotel has some great strengths but some negatives brought the rating down. The location is ideal for walking on the South Downs and is right next to Bramber Castle and Church. There is a lovely garden where you can eat outside. There is ample car parking. Our room was in the Eastgate which is a house on the road at the front. The room was good value for the rate charged - underfloor heating in the bathroom, sleigh bed, minibar, well furnished and very smart. The reception staff were very welcoming and efficient. The public rooms though were not well designed or decorated. They were dominated by dark woodwork - designed to make the building seem older than it really is. (The hotel says it was founded in 1701 but all but a small part seemed much more modern). The hotel needs a decent bar area. The main downside was the evening meal. I knew it was going to be carvery style and so had low expectations but wanted to "make the best of it". The price of the carvery is reasonable - may be too reasonable as the starters and desserts are very much quantity over quality. The starter buffet had tinned mandarin organs, tinned figs, supermarket coleslaw .... welcome back 1974! I had pate and a roll both of which were tasteless. Mains are what you would expect of a carvery and well done. The service during the meal was very hit and miss - a large party of boozy locals getting most of the attention. Elaine did ensure we had a good liqueur coffee. Breakfast was OK - limited on cold selection but hot food was good. The bar has a stuffed fish from 1978 - perhaps its time that this and the 1970s food were consigned to history.

« Good room, good breakfast. few tiny issues »

Had slight issue locating reception quickly on arrival, in the pouring rain, as did another couple who arrived at the same time. Which door, which building ? Then I noticed the tiny sign and called to the other couple. Reception service good. Our room was cold until we got the heating going, we thought the window was open it was so cold. We later watched some TV but could not figure out, using the remote, how to turn the subtitles off. Its not normally that tricky........... Breakfast had a really good selection, we ate well, bacon rather dry and salty. requesterd tea and Hot water got one pot of hot water and tea bags. As my partner likes his tea only made in the pot (yes he is fussy) I only got one cup of my own hot drink and I could have done with two as not my normal mug size. And yes I know I could have asked for more hot water but you just want a quiet fuss free time. So just tiny issues, it suited our needs well and we would go back.

« Lovely hotel set in a country setting! »

I stayed here for one night and had a king size bed. Wow, the bed was really huge! The room was spacious, clean and had tea/coffee facilities and a mini bar. Breakfast was great and there was a variety of hot and cold breakfast. Reception staff were exceptional and smiled and nothing seemed to trouble them.

    « A WONDERFUL SUNDAY LUNCH EXPERIENCE »

The experience of the Sunday Lunch Carvery was very impressive and the cost more than acceptable. The quality of the food, from the myriad of starters to the wide choice of main course dishes and desserts, was excellent. You serve yourself for all courses and the fact that your hot main course, brought by a member of staff to the table, gets back to your table before you do (because the plates are so hot) is totally amazing. The staff are to be commended for their attention, courtesy, and terrific attitude. This goes to each and every one of them.

« Quiet Hotel not far from the Coast »

We had a repeat one-night stopover at this lovely hotel. We chose an upgraded room, just across the driveway, which had lots of space. The usual large bed with television and clean, modern bathroom adjacent. Beyond that there was a sitting room with sofa, chairs, table and a second TV. We were spoilt! What makes this hotel even more memorable is the dinner. A carvery main course, served at the counter and then carried to your table by the staff. Both the starters and desserts are buffet style with a large, and extravagant, selction of both hot and cold dishes. The hotel itself is in a quiet, picturesque, village not many miles from the south coast (Brighton). It is a short walk to the church and ruined castle with lovely views across the countryside. We will be back - but for more than one night next time!

    « Nothing special »

The room was ok, just what i would expect from Best Western really. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and friendly waitresses. The receptionist on the other hand seemed completely disinterested when we walked in, as if she was totally bored by her job.

    « Tolgate hotel »

What a nice hotel ! Lovely grounds excellent rooms and very pleasant staff!!! However the food is poor, carvery, carvery or carvery this i could cope with for one night but the staff insisted on serving my dinner and carrying my plate to the table!!!! The last time my food was served up for me in this way was some 40 years ago at school!!!! I declined breakfast for the this reason!!!! Can someone please tell the hotel that adults are perfectly capable of serving their food themselves! On this basis, with nothing to eat the hotel is poor value.

    « A tired hotel »

My husband, son and myself stayed one night last Thursday and were all very disappointed. We'd had a long journey and were looking forward to having a nice drink in the bar. The public room by the bar was very dark and depressing and very small. No flowers or cheery decorations and not very clean. There was another sort of lounge near the reception area, but that again was not very inviting and just looked old fashioned and tired. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, in fact they were the best thing there. The rooms again were very tired and dated, and our bathroom had definitely seen better days although my sons bathroom was a lot better. Breakfast was excellent with a wide selection of both continental and cooked food, but as we sat down there was a carrot on the floor by our table left over from the previous dinner which was pretty disgusting. The whole hotel looked as if it could have done with a good clean and somewhere cheery to sit and enjoy a nice drink. We did not have dinner there is was far too depressing. We most certainly will not be going back there.

    « A great hotel »

Had a one night stay here night before meeting in Hove. Room 201 nice size and good to have separate lounge area. The only complaint was water pressure very low, a shame as bathroom obviously recently refurbished. Staff all helpful and friendly. Only had breakfast and it was very good. If ever in the area would definitely book here again.

    « Comfortable weekend stay. »

Room 108 on the ground floor was clean, comfortable and warm. Although next to the road we were not aware of any traffic noise. We did not have dinner at the hotel but breakfast was excellent with lots of choice. The hot food was served to us at the buffet which meant that everything was well supervised, no food was drying out, and lids kept everything piping hot. We reported that the room safe would not lock and Robert (who had just served us breakfast!) came along immediately and renewed the battery. Our room was serviced nice and early on the Saturday as we had mentioned that we needed to be back in there to change for a 2.30 wedding. Our only slight niggle was that there was no hanging space in the wardrobe or anywhere in the room with the full length needed for a long dress or outdoor coats. Bramber is a pretty village next to the picturesque market town of Steyning. The Old Tollgate is a perfect location for exploring the area.

    « Lovely hotel »

We stayed here for two nights, we had a comfortable room (202). The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Dinner was very good, buffet style, you could have a car very, there was also a few other choices, I had beef with mushrooms and it was delicious. Breakfast was also good, plenty of choice including cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts and cold meats and then a hot selection (full English). We would definitely stay again.

    « Nice stay. »

We stayed for a couple of nights in the week whilst visiting friends. Check in was efficient and polite and we were given room 208 which was overlooking the road but we didn't find it particularly noisy. The room was clean and of a reasonable size. There was plenty of storage plus a safe and mini bar. The bathroom was clean and served it's purpose. My only gripe would be the shower head was on the low side. Breakfast and the carvery dinner were excellent using quality ingredients and plenty of them. All in all we had a great stay. Ideally located for where we needed to be, just a shame that we couldn't stay a couple of days longer. We will definitely be back.

« GREAT FOOD BUT AVOID THE F/F FRONT ROOMS!! »

The Carvery and the buffet breakfast are very tasty and there's a great choice. Our F/F room no.222 facing the main road was quite nice and good internet but it must have been over the kitchen/restaurant cos the noise affected our 2 nights stay from early evening til late and then quite early in the morning AND due to passjng road and pedestrian traffic from outside (even though the hotel fronts a small road it is a bus route). The Reception Staff also need to improve their 'attitude' - not even a 'hope you enjoyed your stay' when we checked out, just not interested.

« Rude manager, told tables were needed and the restaurant was empty! Manager was far from polite. »

I have used the Old Tollgate a few times for meeting potential client meetings. I usually meet about 11am and I have left by noon or 12:10pm latest. I went this week and arrived at 10:50am, I stood at the bar hoping one of the three staff that were behind it would ask if they could help so I could get a coffee. The manager was there talking to staff behind the bar and one in front of it. No one even acknowledged me it was like I didn't exist. I went to walk away after waiting some 10mins then the manager decided to ask me if I wanted something! I finally got a coffee and found a place to sit at. The restaurant was completely empty and so I sat at one of the many many empty tables in their vast empty restaurant. My meeting took place and at 11:50 the waitress told us we had to go as they needed the one table we were sat at, despite there being so many tables free and still no one else in the restaurant. I politely said we would be done by noon - in plenty of time for when they were expecting their rush of hungry diners. A few mins later the rude manager arrived and said we had to go they needed that particular table which incidentally was not reserved. We gathered our things to leave and saw there was no rush, no hundreds or even 10 hungry diners. To our amazement the place was still empty apart from one lady ambling around the carvery area with a tray. As I left the car park some 10 mins later I wondered where all these hungry diners were and why had we been so abruptly and rudely asked to leave. Yes we had coffee not carvery but there was no need for such rudeness. There is no requirement for me to use a business centre for one hour with one client hence I didn't.

« Birthday Lunch for six. »

We had not been to this Restaurant for probably 10 or 12 years and decided to book it for a friends Birthday Lunch. I must admit I came away unimpressed, the food was average, the choice of vegetables was limited and unlike many Carveries, you could not get additional vegetables, etc. without charge. Not sure I'd go back again, Crown Carveries do it better! However the Staff were friendly and attentive.

    « So wanted to »

We so wanted to like this hotel. Having stayed in another BW Plus hotel and it being my birthday weekend, not to mention previous reviews, we were very much looking forward to our stay. We were disappointed in several respects though. OH booked this hotel as a relaxing weekend away. To that end, he enquired if there were any functions booked and to request a quiet room. We were assured that there were none known of (but of course, this can always change) and our quiet room in 'Westgate' was described as being, 'lovely'. On arrival after a busy Friday evening drive down, check in was efficient rather than warm. Crossing to the annex, we were pleased to see that our room was indeed away from the road and on the first floor as we'd requested. Unfortunately, the Prosecco OH had booked and paid for as a surprise was nowhere to be seen. That was remedied but he had to go back down to Reception to sort it. From that point on, the peace we'd envisaged was not to be. Settling into our room, all we could hear was the racket next door. And it was a racket. At least 3 young females screeching and shouting to each other along with door banging and more shouting in the corridors between rooms. This continued until we went down to dinner. Returning to our room just after 11.30 that night, we were dismayed to hear even more from noise next door. OK, we thought, it's still quite early for a Friday night, not really a problem. It didn't stop though so, in desperation, OH called down to the night porter asking if something could be done. Some ten minutes later, the noise was even worse and we called down again. The night porter responded that he'd, 'already been up and listened outside their door, not hearing anything'. Really? We could and didn't hear him arrive. OH insisted he come up (again?) and when he did, we heard him apologising several times to THEM for disturbing them about the complaint. You couldn't make it up. So, a horrible night because even when they eventually settled, by now around 1230, we were on edge all night in case they started up again. Next morning, we were awoken at 0645 by the same racket that showed no consideration for others at all and continued until we went to breakfast bleary eyed and fed up. It was my birthday and, to be honest, it was somewhat ruined because we were tired and more importantly, very concerned about what the next night would bring. We asked to speak with the Duty Manager. To be fair, he listened, apologised and took our complaint seriously. It seemed that there was a large wedding party booked into 10 rooms. This must have happened before our booking as there is no way that number could have been booked at short notice. Our question, quite reasonably, was why on earth had we been placed in what turned out to be the middle of the large party's rooms? Hence the noise, to ing an fro ing and general racket. Explaining the disappointment of all that happened, he kindly took the cost of the wine off the bill and offered us another room in Eastgate (the other annex and much quieter). He also said that all we had to do was pack and staff would move our things. Not wishing to appear ungrateful, we then had to take up time in our day, live out of our case because it wasn't worth unpacking for one night and have a smaller bed than we'd booked. It was explained that it was all dependent on 'bed type' but please, why didn't someone contact us to explain before we arrived? At least then we could have made an informed choice. As to the rest of our stay, be aware that the restaurant is more like a pub type than fine dining. Most diners are casually dressed and this seemed to affect the atmosphere. Staff in the dining were great though - friendly and efficient. The food is good too but in a queue up, wait to be dished up sort of way. So, my apologies for a somewhat negative review. As always, reviews are subjective. This is my honest experience and for that reason, we would not want to return.

    « Rooms, Food, Drinks & Staff Excellent ! »

This combines 2 recent visits to The Old Tollgate. The first was for Afternoon Tea on a really lovely, sunny, warm September Day. We took our elderly Aunt out for Tea and decided on The Old Tollgate, as it was close to where she lives. We sat in the lovely little garden, under a parasol, and were served a delightful and tasty array of Sandwiches - Smoked Salmon, Egg and Cress, Cheese and Pickle , etc., Fruit Scones with Clotted Cream and Strawberry Jam, and delicious little cakes and fruit tarts, with Large Pots of Tea. Aunty was delighted with her Special Treat ! Second visit was an overnight stay and Dinner in October. As always a friendly welcome and easy check-in process, a superb Executive Room upstairs in the Annexe, and a delicious Carvery Dinner and Breakfast the following morning. Bedroom is beautifully decorated with "luxury" curtains and bedspread. An exceptionally good , large shower cubicle in bathroom, fluffy towels, heated towel rail. & the usual Shower caps, and bath/shower accessories, a very good make-up mirror with light. In bedroom, the usual tea/coffee/hot chocolate sachets and shortbread biscuits, a well-stocked mini-bar in fridge, hairdryer, stationery, magazines, tv, air con/heating, iron & ironing board, ample wardrobe storage with extra blankets/pillows, good sized bedside cabinets and very good lighting - much better than most hotels these days - you can actually read in the room ! (Rm 314). Our only complaint is that the mattress needs renewing on this bed !!! It slopes down on each side, which is a sure sign of wear/old age. The Carvery Dinner was superb. Good variety of choices for mains, brilliant choice of cold starters, and a superb array of sweets - mostly cold and one hot. Large portions and always excellent value. We had a half-price voucher in our room to use for Dinner, so even better value for money. Good range of lagers and beers on tap or bottled. Nice choice of wines. Breakfasts at The Old Tollgate are 99.9% excellent. A very large variety of fruits - dried, tinned and fresh, choice of cereals or porridge, and excellent cooked breakfast - again a good variety. The only problem this time was that our plates, the tomatoes, Bacon and sausages were only lukewarm - not even remotely hot - and we were in early - 6.50 a.m. (brkfst starts @ 6.30am - so no excuse for that. I complained and was offered a new plate of hot items, but by then I had eaten my scrambled eggs - at least they were hot -so I declined and left the bacon, but ate the cold tomatoes and sausages ! This is the one and only time we have ever experienced this, so either the hot plates and lamps had not been put on soon enough or high enough, or the food was not piping hot when it was laid out on the hotplate. Service in the restaurant is always excellent, friendly, helpful. Robert and all other staff very good. We will always return, and we highly recommend this excellent hotel. It is also reasonably priced for rooms - we think good value for the standard of hotel.

« One night stay on South Downs walk »

Walked in to horrible smell of boiled cabbage, the carvery goes on daily so that's the general smell. The rooms are as you expect from a chain, large, good beds, nice bathrooms except friends had a disabled bathroom which completely lacked any decor and had old taps etc. They received a slight discount for that after we complained. There's not much there so we ate in stemming which was lovely. You can park and leave the car which is a bonus.

    « Disgusted »

Coming back from a day out we found the room a mess bed unmade duvet hanging off the bed one cushion on the chair one under a pillow, towel missing and a toe nail on the floor at the side of the bed.Reporting this to Keith [--] duty manager we would have expected him to be as upset as we were but all we got was (the cleaners are not employed by us) we said we wanted this investigated and we wanted to know theoutcome. We received a letter the following week apologising for the room not being serviced but stated that nobody knew where the toe nail came from,we didn't feel that was satisfactory and so contacted Best Western in time a reply came fromTanya (Team Leader Reception )stating that the toe nail must have fallen out of the bed whilst it was being made, also that the toe nail had come from myself or my partner. Obviously Tanya had not taken the time to read the complaint or check with her duty manager if she had she would have known the bed HAD NOT been made also if this nail had come from one of us I am sure we would have noticed. We have since reply to Tanya (Team Lead Reception ) pointing this out to Tanya but have not had the courtesy of a reply. All I would like to say to anyone who does encounter a problem is please take lots of photos and get a manager straight away. This unfortunately was our first encounter off a Best Western Hotel and have to say will be our last it is so sad when we look at other good reviews that the incident itself was bad enough but the attitude and implications made by this one member of staff has caused us a great deal of distress.

We stayed at the Old Tollgate for two nights whilst visiting Brighton, Lewes and the coast. We had a very comfortable, well-equipped room which was exceptionally clean. The village location is attractive with a Norman church and castle remains across the road, The staff were helpful and friendly. The food (mostly buffet style) was enjoyable and good value - my wife was particularly impressed withe roast beef. I preferred the local bitter!

Excellent food in the Carvery for dinner and good breakfast choices. Good staff who were friendly and very helpful and knew what they were doing. Great location for quiet break and also near many local attractions and South Coast beaches. Overall it was a good experience and glad we went. We have eaten in the Carvery before on nights out but staying there and eating was a good option as we could relax with no driving. A very peaceful environment with plenty of parking.

    « Afternoon tea »

Just returned from a delightful afternoon tea at The Old Tollgate Hotel - what a find. Homemade scones, cakes, and a superb selection of sandwiches all washed down with as much tea as you can drink. Thoroughly recommended.

    « perfect stay...will return »

We have just returned from a delightful 4 night stay at The Old Tollgate Hotel. We arrived late approx 10.30pm due to the distance and travel but was greeted in by the night Porter who was more than helpful getting our bags to our room. We would highly recommend others to stay here. The service was excellent, from start to finish, lovely breakfast and carvery restaurant with plenty of choice. The setting is beautiful and exceptionally well maintained. Our room was beautifully decorated, lovely and spacious with a very good recently refurbIshed en suite bathroom wouldn't hesitate to stay here again and recommend to others

« Great bathroom, nice food, dire complaint handling, refused refund »

We had an enjoyable weekend. Our bathroom was great, newly refurbished, hotel food nice, staff good especially waiters, room 302 ok-ish. We were in and out Saturday...with the do not disturb / please service the room hanger turned appropriately. We were out to breakfast <45 mins> (when somebody took our overnight beer and wine glass and did nothing else); out mid - late morning <90 mins>; out for lunch <90 mins>; and out from 3:55pm. We returned just after midnight (reception unmanned) and were very surprised, disappointed and irritated to discover the room had not been serviced. As tea, coffee and shower gel had not been replenished, my wife had hot chocolate as a substitute, I had nothing, and we went without showers. Sunday morning I raised a complaint. The receptionist said nobody was available empowered to give discount. She provided tea, coffee and shower gel. Finally on checkout, I was presented with a bill including the prepaid 2 nights bed and breakfast. The receptionist was able to correct this. I suggested she waive the Saturday carvery lunch bill to resolve our complaint, she was unwilling and / or unable to do this. So I have now had to waste time following up. Other items we wouldn't have bothered mentioning - musty blanket in wardrobe drawer cobwebs on 3 ceiling lights very dusty window frames dust on restaurant shelf We paid a hefty Saturday supplement. This would have been ok if everything had been perfect, but we will not pay more for less, nor pay for a service not rendered. On chasing, complaint handing was dire - duty managers are not empowered to refund. The housekeeper claims the do not disturb hanger was permanently diaplayed (it was not) and she left a note under the door (she did not). The hotel claims reception is manned 24 hours (it is not). This is compounded by the refusal of the general manager to refund. We paid £97 for Friday night which was ok, £147 for Saturday night which is not. I have now had to raise a £50 dispute with my credit card company. To summarise it is a nice hotel in a nice location. If you don't experience a problem you should enjoy...if you do experience a problem you have been warned!

    « AWAY ON BUSINESS. »

I stayed here two year ago and I was slightly disappointing with this stay but only slight. The room i has was a little tired and could of done with a slight make over, having said that the bar and food was great. Although the Carvery was great there was very little choice outside that. Service and staff were great. I will probberly stay here again

    « A comfortable stay »

We spent 2 nights at the hotel whilst visiting friends a few miles away. Parking was easy and check in was simple. All of the staff were very helpful and cheerful. Dinner was of the carvery variety so nothing too exotic. It was well cooked and plentiful. Breakfast likewise was plentiful and well presented. There was a choice of breakfast for every taste, be it simply fruit or cereal or the enormous 'Full English' that some of us treat ourselves to when staying away. The room was clean and comfortable and sported all of the expected facilities. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

« Wonderful location with service to match »

This hotel is in a great location with some great village and country walks without needing to use the car. All facilities excellent, staff cheerful and helpful, breakfast fine - would definitely use again. In retrospect, we should have asked for a room away from the village main street which is quiet all night long but started to get busy from 6am (presumably commuters). Double glazing is good but we would ideally have left the windows open as nights were warm.

    « Large nice rooms »

The room was large and a bed that could be 3' twins or a double. A pity that the mattress was not firmer and on a hot night a sheet as an alternate to the duvet would have been nice. So unusual to have plenty of room. Breakfast was a buffet but dished up for you so no risk of guests touching the food. The nicest buffet scrambled egg that I have had in a hotel for a long time.

« Overnight stay enroute to a wedding. »

What a delightful Hotel, easy to find, lots of parking spaces. Staff very friendly and helpful. We were upgraded to a room with four poster and jacuzzi bath! The room was lovely. This only thing that prevents me giving it an excellent rating was the restaurant/carvery.It was very hot inside with little ventilation, this didn't help! My veggie selection was dry and looked unappetising.Meats looked ok but really just a bog standard carvery, have seen a lot better! All the staff in restaurant were friendly and helpful but seemed to be rushed off their feet, suspect there were not enough of them. Breakfast was again help yourself affair, most of it was ok,however the scrambled eggs were hard and had black discolouration to bits of them and the bacon was greasy. This place could do so much better if the restaurant and food improved.

    « Lovely »

This hotel is situated in a lovely village, not far from Brighton. The breakfast is excellent as is the carvery in the evening. There are places to walk and explore and the ruins of a castle just over the road next to a church, There is also a lovely garden area when the weather is nice.

    4
    « Very good food »

The rooms are in a 2 storey layout and are good with tea/ coffee facilities plus a mini bar full bath and shower over. Ample off road parking and in the centre of the village. The highlight of our stay was the excellent food in the restaurant and at a very reasonable price. The evening buffet has a very good choice of meats and the accompanying veg is very good as well. Will return if we need a hotel in the Shoreham area again.

    « Midweek dinner ?? date »

This was our second visit here as a couple, though I have been with friends a few years ago.I used a voucher from my local paper, so the main course carvery was only £6.85 each.As before the meat and large selection of vegetables were freshly cooked and delicious. We had the dessert ?? course for £5.85 each, again a delicious range of cold sweets, and a hot choice. The drink were standard pub price.Service was fast, and very friendly, it is one if our favourite restaurants now, and we will be back..its very popular so booking is advisable.

    « Wedding venue »

Fantastic from start to finish. We had a fab day and the staff couldn't have done anymore, Robert and staff excelled themselves!! What swayed us to get married here was the food. We have been regulars here for quite sometime and didn't realise that what you got during the week is what they do for a wedding......THE FOOD HERE IS THE BEST CARVERY EVER!!! They cater for everyone and also if you want to change things veg, deserts etc they'll do it!!! This is a must visit whether you want an intimate meal or a gathering of friends and family!!! Well done all xx

    « Weekend break »

Modern conversion and new wings remove most of the charm from this ageing hotel. However kind staff and spotless rooms make it a great destination for exploring the Downs. Bramber village, the Castle and nearby Steyning are wonderful. Has a Cotswold feel in a more accessible part of southern England.

    « Two night stay »

Room 220 in the main building was spotlessly clean, had a wonderfully comfortable bed and a large very well appointed en suite bathroom. There was a lift from reception. As we had commitments in the area, we only used the restaurant for breakfast. The staff on duty were friendly and helpful and we enjoyed everything we ate. We particularly appreciated the fact that black pudding, a personal favourite was available and that items were frequently replenished so the hot food items were served in optimum condition which is not always the case with hotel buffet food. We were returning to the area after a gap of many years and we're delighted to find Bramber as attractive a village as ever. Our only disappointment was that on checking in, although we found the reception staff efficient, little interest was shown when in answering the question as to whether we had stayed in the hotel before, we replied that we had held our wedding reception at The Old Tollgate and that we had returned as part of significant wedding anniversary celebrations. A missed PR opportunity in our opinion. That said we would certainly return in the future.

« Nice hotel with good breakfast »

We stayed here for three nights. The hotel consists of three buildings. On central one which also includes a restaurant and hotel rooms and two other buildings for the other hotel rooms. The room we had was good, with a proper bed and good shower. Breakfast was also fine, with lots of options to choose from. Because it is a buffet style of breakfast it makes it a little bit restless at times, especially when it is very busy and everybody is walking around to get additional food. When you like walking, there are several options from the hotel doorstep to take. Bramber itself has little to do. There is a pub, and there are 4 restaurants (pub, Indian, Chinese and the hotel also has a restaurant). If you want more (and better options) you have to look further, Brighton for example. Staff was also okay, but could be better. It lacked a genuinely friendly touch.

    « Sunday night stay »

We booked here as we were attending a family lunch celebration at Wilton House and wanted to have a few drinks. The hotel advance booked a taxi for us so we were able to drop the car off and go to the lunch before checking in late afternoon. Room was excellent, massive bed, clean and well equipped . We had the carvery for dinner which isn't my first choice but was very good- excellent selection of starters. Staff very pleasant and attentive. Breakfast was also excellent with a good choice of hot and cold food. Bramber is very pretty and provides a good base for exploring this part of Sussex so I would recommend the hotel.

    « Monotonous »

Stayed here for 4 nights with another couple. Rooms were good and bathrooms excellent. Rooms were noisy with traffic from the main road through the village. Would not have wanted to stay any longer as the meals were the same everyday for breakfast and Dinner and became boring. Disliked seeing some of the dishes from the night before covered in the chiller ready for that nights meal! Dining Room could do with some updating. There is not enough seating for drinks before dinner or after the meal. Reception staff could have been more friendly.

« Superb One Night Stay »

Booked on spec and what a pleasant surprise. Arrived for the Buffet/Carvery Lunch - wonderful quality and value. Beer on tap - real ale and plenty of choice of wines and spirits etc. Our room was large and very comfortable and afforded us a great nights sleep. Excellent breakfast set us up for the coming day. Planning on returning for a longer next soon.

    « Overnight stay »

Stayed at hotel once before, room looked like it had been refurbished except carpet which had some stains, nice bathroom but no loo brush, room had plenty of sockets, internet not over fast. Food was good, wine was a bit musty and was told thats because its a Spanish Rioja, ok. Staff chatty.

« Fantastic room with spa bath »

Stayed here for one night whilst walking the South Donwns Way. The room was excellent , a four poster bed and huge walk in shower and spa bath. A real treat after a long days walking. The rooms were spotless as as the hotel and the buffet breakfast worked well with certain items cooked to order. We didn't eat in the evening as we don't enjoy carvery so ate at one of the pubs in this very picturesque village.

    « good value »

We had a two night stay here recently for a short break away. The village itself is very pretty and the castle ruins are situated just across the road from the hotel, about a 5 minute walk. We had a double room in the annexe which was clean and comfortable, but I would advise you to request a room at the back of the building when booking as we had a ground floor room right next to the road and passers by were walking right past our window. it was quite noisy first thing in the morning as the rush hour traffic passed by and that was with the windows closed. I requested a fan from reception as it was quite airless having to keep the windows closed and they were very helpful and brought one straight over. The bed was comfortable but bring your own pillows as the pillows we had were hard and thin and in definite need of replacement!the decor of the room was fine, the bathroom could do with a bit of refurbishment but everything worked. The breakfasts were good, with a wide variety of cold items and a good choice on the hotplate, and the staff were very helpful.I would stay here again as it is a good location for the coast and venturing further afield

    « 2 night stay »

This hotel is situated in the pretty village of Bramber. Plenty of countryside for walks, along with old churches & some castle remains. The village is so colourful with the window boxes everywhere including the hotel, the pub & even the bus shelter!! We stayed here for 2 nights. The room was clean & comfortable & the shower nice & powerful. Curtains were lovely & thick so we got a good nights sleep without being woken when it got light. We had breakfast included on both mornings. You could help yourself from the cold selection & cereals, and the full English breakfast was served by staff. We had dinner here on one evening. Starters included home made minted pea soup which was very tasty. My partner had the pate which he also said was very good. Main course was a carvery where you chose what you wanted & the staff brought it to your table. (Think there were a couple of other options but when there is a roast I don't look any further!) Didn't have room for a dessert unfortunately so can't comment on them. Lovely garden to sit in if you feel so inclined. Plenty of parking too. First full day we were there housekeeping didn't turn up until very late in the afternoon but the next day when we were due to check out at 11am, they turned up at 10.30am. Not a problem to us but it did seem a little strange.

« First Class. We look forward to coming back. »

Our two night stay was delightful. This is a really attractive village with plenty to see and with country walks on the doorstep. Our room was spotlessly clean, spacious and comfortable. The bathroom was likewise with plenty of hot water from the power shower. The gardens were beautifully kept with tables & umbrellas for afternoon tea al fresco and quiet areas to just sit with a book if you wish. The buffet style restaurant & carvery served generous portions for both breakfast & dinner. This is the ideal place for a short relaxing break and has ample parking.

« Ranks in the top three I have stayed in. »

The Old Tollgate hotel is in the top three hotels that I have stayed in over the years. The hotel is located in a small quiet village with not many shops, & we used the hotel as a base to visit various areas along the south coast. The staff at the hotel were very friendly & welcoming, & made you feel that you were special. The room we had for our two weeks stay was a very good size with an adjoining lounge area. The room was very clean & nice & quite. The breakfasts were always very good, with a good selection to choose from. Room service was excellent. The car park area was good with plenty of space. We did not use the restaurant for meals other than for breakfasts as we were touring round & generally ate out. The only criticism we have is the laundry service charges, they are very expensive, so we took our laundry to a launderette in Brighton which cost us £12 as opposed to the £120 it would have cost by using the hotel service. The hotel is not a cheap place to stay, but was worth the expense. The mobile phone signal around area is poor, but the hotel has very good internet which is free.

    « A pleasant break »

After much searching for a hotel in Brighton with parking and not being able to find anything suitable we booked in at The Old Tollgate Hotel. On arrival the receptionist was very helpful. The room was clean and comfortable and although our room faced the main road, being a small village there was no problem with traffic noise. The hotel appears to be a combination of several properties joined together which give a bit of a higeldy pigeldy feel to the place. We didn't have our evening meal here but the carvery looked and smelt very good as did the lunchtime offering for the day we checked out. Breakfast was very good and the staff very pleasant & helpful. The garden was also very nice to sit in with a drink on a warm evening. There is also a nice walk along the banks of the River Adur about 3 minutes up the road if you fancy a leg stretch. All in all a nice spot.

    « Carvery »

This Restaurant has been going for many years but under different ownership. The seating is for the most part comfortable but a lack of aircon can make it hot. The starters are not as good as they used to be with a few choices missing. Main course is very good. Plenty of choice and well prepared vegetables. Sweet again was ok but choice has been reduced. The waiting staff are very good and attentive. There are one or two that like to give a smart answer!

    3
« Friendly, comfortable and good base. »

Good location, friendly staff, clean rooms. The food was good and typical look and feel of the Best Western hotel chain. Good base but no amenities if you were staying a while and need a car to get around, but not a hotel you would want to stay in when your surrounded by the South Downs.

    « A weekend while walking SDW »

We had a very enjoyable visit. We don't normally do the buffet eating thing but we thoroughly enjoyed our evening meal and breakfasts. The whole operation is very well organised and operated. Staff well trained and accommodating. Our room was very comfortable clean and spacious. What a beautiful village all in bloom. There are plenty of other restaurants and pubs very close by. We would return.

    « Good party base »

Stayed here while visiting friends. The room was a good size and the bathroom. Which also had a jacuzzi a nice treat. Have never had so many white fluffy towels. The club sandwich was good. Also the breakfast. We would stay again.

    4
    « Reasonable »

Room was fine. Was quite large and looked to be constructed for disabled access even though we weren't, The food was good - served in carvery style for dinner and breakfast. Wi-Fi was unreliable, during our overnight stay had to ask for it to be rebooted twice.

« Celebration of our Golden Wedding anniversary. »

We have stayed here several times before and it never disappoints. Lovely area in a very pretty village full of beautiful flower arrangements. On the edge of the Downs and not far from the sea. This time we had a suite, nice to have a sitting room. Lovely and light. Both still and sparkling water in room. Carvery everything you could wish from lots of starters, great main course meats and mouth watering desserts. The breakfast buffet was just as good with fruits, cereals and great choice of hot food too. Needless to say we will be returning.

Best western deserves to be recognized for blending old world charm & history with today's comfort & conviences. Superior food, white linen service, perfect mannered staff. Nice wines and plentiful palate pleasing carvery meals. Rooms are excellent & tastefully furnishings and accommodate all needs. Clean and well cared for.

    « A hidden gem! »

Afternoon cream tea, evening carvery. Top quality service, plenty of parking, very nice grounds. Ideal to stay fir a few nights or just a day trip for afternoon tea &/or evening meal. Good selection in the carvery, the excellent selection of desserts.

    « A brilliant stay!! »

Hubby and I stayed here for 3 nights in July while visiting family and friends in the Sussex area and we could not fault anything at all. We had a room in Eastgate - a separate annex to the main building. Room was lovely. Very spacious, comfy bed, nice shower and even had a fireplace! Had a nice evening stroll around the beautiful village of Bramber so location was perfect. We chose to eat from the carvery on 2 evenings and the food was superb. Great vegetable choice, nice tender meat, lovely roast spuds and Yorkshire puddings. The pudding selection was great, so many nice desserts to choose from. Breakfast was buffet style with something to please all tastes and everything nicely cooked. Would not hesitate to recommend to others and cannot wait to go back for a return visit.

    « Excellent hotel »

This hotel was in a lovely little village. Our room was excellent could not fault it. We arrived on Friday night so we decided to eat in the restaurant as they put a voucher offer in our room. We phoned to book a table which was no problem. It was a Carvery the food was excellent and the service was good. Breakfast was again go up to the counter and be served the food was again excellent. Overall we had a very enjoyable stay and would recommend it to any who wanted to visit this lovely area. We went for a walk over the South Downs and did not need to use the car to access onto the Downs and other walks.

    « Simply super »

The accomodation was clean, the staff helpful & friendly, the food was super. There was nothing not to like. We will use the hotel again when the need arises, which will be some time late summer/early autumn. A couple of trivial things :- 1) A sign telling diners to check in at the bar would be handy. There was no sign of a bookings list in the bar when I went in there before dinner, so when booked time arrived we just went in and sat down at a table with 2 covers (and no "reserved sign"). Then we got moved. I get that we didn't follow the system, but what was the point in moving us? 2) The breakfast was good, but is the scrambled egg made from dried egg, or frozen? Just had a slightly odd texture. 3) Unexpectedly, the lamb & beef were a bit too pink for us. But on a positive note, the pork & crackling was superb. All things considered, it was excellent. Nearly forgot - The WiFi was really good, throughout the hotel.

« Good value hotel with quirky ways! »

We stayed at the Old Tollgate Hotel on a Friday night prior to heading into Brighton for the weekend. The hotel was easy to find and there was plenty of free parking close to the reception. Check-in was friendly and efficient and we were directed across from the main building to the West Gate annex directly opposite. Our room was of a good size, with a comfortable bed, tea & coffee making facilities and a large and clean bathroom. The wi-fi signal was strong, reliable and free of charge. One downside was that the room bordered the main road through the village which meant that there was both traffic noise and a lack of privacy due to the adjacent pavement. Although the traffic noise proved not to be as bad as we'd initially feared it did mean that we felt unable to open the windows at night-time as we would usually want to do. After a couple of pints at The Castle pub down the road, we got back just in time for the carvery at the hotel which was decent value thanks to a voucher which had been left for us in our room. The meats were plentiful and of a good quality but I would have preferred to serve myself the vegetables as is more common elsewhere. The buffet desserts tasted better than they looked so all in all we did OK. Breakfast the following morning offered a good choice with the cooked items plated for us at the buffet rather than self-service. It took a while to get coffee as there seemed to be only one waitress servicing three different rooms but overall it was a good quality breakfast which set us up nicely for the day ahead. In summary, this is a good quality hotel in a very pleasant village boasting several other eating establishments and with the ruined remains of Bramber Castle just a short walk away. The layout of the hotel perhaps explains it's quirkiness but the staff were friendly and helpful so we'd have no problem returning to stay at the Old Tollgate in the future.

    « Great venue for a wedding »

Stayed at this hotel as a guest of the bride, the over all experience was very good! The ceremony was held in one of their reception rooms, professionally done and good atmosphere. Nice decor throughout the hotel, our room was really nice, very clean and comfortable beds, however the mini bar was massively over priced. The carvery dinner was superb! Loads to choose from and the deserts especially varied. Garden leaves a lot to be desired though as the photographer had trouble finding good spots to take pictures. Other than that this was a really nice venue for a wedding.

« Personality Plus by Best Western »

This hotel manages to easily meet the criteria for the Best Western franchise, "hotels with personality". In the lovely setting of a picturesque village away from the hub-bub it provides an oasis of calm. A warm and friendly welcome at reception with minimum formality we check in and have a pot of tea in the lounge while our suitcases are taken to our room. We find Room 107 in Westgate, nice to have an upgrade, and it is a very spacious four poster with spa bath and separate shower in the en-suite, decently furnished and well decorated. Dinner is a carvery with good choice of starters and desserts. Slightly different to others, meat and vegetables are plated by servers and taken to your table, starters and desserts are self service. Works very well and with the food being tasty, well cooked and generous portions a most enjoyable experience. We tried the "Chefs Specials" during our stay and found those as high in quality as the carvery. The staff we found to be helpful, cheerful and friendly, all of them a credit to the hotel. Check out was just as efficient as our experience throughout our stay, wish we could stay longer it really was a pleasure. Totally recommended without any caveat, it's one to return to.

« Best place to stay in West Sussex »

Have just returned from here after a 2 night stay visiting relatives in Sussex. Words cannot describe what a magnificent hotel this is, but what a magnificent location as well. I stayed in the Westgate wing, a small block of rooms opposite reception, a double room, which was huge, spotlessly clean, with all facilities you would want, a really comfortable bed, and excellent free WiFi connectivity. Upon my arrival the receptionist was extremely good and very informative whilst being very affable. As the afternoon/evening wore on I found every member of staff to be likewise, what a credit to the hotel, they did so much to ensure that their guests were well accommodated. The evening meal (at I believe £22.95 per head) may sound expensive but believe me it is worth more than that for 3 courses. Good choice of cold or hot starters (self service), excellent choice of beef, pork, turkey or gammon for the main, chosen by you with whatever vegetables/sauces you prefer to accompany it, then brought by the staff to your table, followed by dessert (if you have room) again self service and plenty of choice, all taken in the restaurant area which is well furnished with plenty of space. The nights sleep was extremely quiet, the bed firm and very comfortable, the bathroom having complimentary toiletries, could not fault it. The next day, breakfast, large range of cereals, juices, cold cuts, bread, toast etc. followed by a wide range of really good "Full English" breakfast items, if I may use that phrase, with obviously tea and/or coffee. Car parking was no problem, it is large, but not just a car park, it is in effect a roundabout with car parking spaces radiating off, under trees and shrubs, much more pleasing on the eye, and the gardens at the rear are also very well maintained with a lot of seating area. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who really went out of their way. I will be returning within the next couple of months to relax and enjoy the wonderful location in the West Sussex countryside and to experience the fine dining that they provide. 10 out of 10 to you all, many thanks.

    « Nice »

Had a long night due to the lack of sound proofing, my room had a door connecting me your next room which meant I heard every detail of the neighbours conversation and every snore (as if they were in the same room) View from my window was a wall.... Parking was available and staff were very polite and courteous Had no phone signal at all but was able to get free wifi Ordered room service in the evening which was nice. Very disappointed with the breakfast I had in the restaurant. I actually couldn't eat it as there were large spider legs stuck to the underside of my fried egg (definitely legs as I could see the joints and the hairs!). The staff were very apologetic and did offer to cook me some more but I couldn't, so I did end up going into Steyne for breakfast - I was still charged for breakfast when I checked out Lovely hotel and lovely room, just a shame I had bad experience with noisy neighbours and bad eggs

    « Most Comfortable »

We stayed here during the week for 1 night, ample car parking and check in was sleek. Our room was over the road in the Westgate. A good new bathroom and shower and a lovely comfortable bed, the room was spacious and quiet, and we had a brilliant nights sleep. Dinner in the restaurant was buffet style, the carvery was excellent, choice of turkey, pork, smoked gammon or beef, or a bit of all! With veg etc. other choices too. This is good quality and not expensive. All washed down with a bottle of white Rioja. Breakfast too was delightful. Quality back bacon and fried eggs perfectly cooked. All in all, this Best Western is a really good deal and the cost is not out of the way. You must try it!

« As good as ever »

Excellent service as always from the old tollgate. We went for a sunday roast and found the restaurant was very busy as expected, luckily I had booked a week prior. However the booking did not seem to be recorded but didn't cause us a problem as they were able to accommodate us. We had a table by a window and a open door which was great as it was a hot day. The food was great, a choice of traditional starters-prawn cocktail, a selection of cold meats and fish. The main course had all the usual Sunday roast meats-pork, beef, Turkey and chicken. This was served by the chef personally with potatoes and veg. Your plate was then carried back to your table by a waiter. The food was cooked really well and was nice and hot! Plenty of dessert was on offer too with many types of flan, ice cream and cakes. Such a great experience never to be spoiled by repeated visits.

« promising stay ruined by "Firemen gettogether" on final night »

Idyllic location in rural Bramber -- efficient Reception and escorted to exceptional bed room with 2 settees and loads of space plus superb walk-in shower. All food was on a buffet system which worked very well -- breakfast was average but evening roasts were v good -- vegetarian options were limited. Wine List was brief but acceptable -- could do with listing alcohol percentages on the Wine List. Staff were extremely friendly and helpful -- Christina helped me several times to sort out WIFI connection which was problematic.Head Chef was entertaining but even he found it hard to cope with influx of extra diners on our last night. To be honest the Buffet set-up was chaotic by the time my wife and I came to dine --- starters were depleted and some items eg stuffed vine leaves were all gone -- chefs did offer alternatives. Pudding section was below standard and there was no ice cream -- Chef did promise to replenish but I could not be bothered. All in all we thought we had found a little gem until that last night and reluctantly we will not be going back. Obviously in a competitive market commercial pressures come into play but I am afraid it should not interfere with old-fashioned traditional values. I would classify our stay as ABOVE average.

« Clean, comfortable in a quiet, rural location »

A large clean, comfortable room nd comfortable bed with a large bathroom with shower. There were 2 chairs and a coffee table and a desk but no desk chair. One of the chairs could be used at the desk but probably wouldn't be comortable for working a whole evening. A mini-fridge. Lots of sockets which is very useful and good lighting. Lovely quiet location and just across the road a footpath up to the old church and ruins of Bramber castle. Free wifi but few TV channels. Plenty of parking and easy to find. A quiet, rural location but close to Brighton and Hove. From my room I had to go outside to reach the restaurant but not far. There is also a garden with tables and chairs. We had a pleasant drink in the sun before going in to eat. The carvery was very good value as we had a voucher for the main course. Starters and desserts are extra. The restaurant has traditional dark wood decoration. The portions of meat and veg were generous. The breakfast was not as good as the evening meal. There was fruit salad, cereals etc but the hot food was luke warm, bacon greasy and the toaster didn't toast. Service at reception was friendly. I would definitley stay here again.

« Best Western knock all the others into a cocked hat. »

From the booking procedure by phone to the welcome at the hotel the friendliness of each and every staff member was genuine and welcoming. Nothing was too much trouble for them. Quality shouts out everywhere from the rooms to the decor and the high standard and variety of the food on offer. Wherever possible we shall always stay with Best Western.

« Very good hotel in a lovely location »

Very comfortable hotel, staff very helpful, parking no problem, well run carvery, a few alternatives available if you don't want carvery. Found it more expensive than restaurants in our area, but that's to be expected so close to London. Everything you could want at breakfast.

« Ticks all the boxes »

I stayed only one night at this hotel but found it a pleasant and quiet stay. I arrived at the end of dinner but was still made very welcome by a very accommodating waitress and chef after an awful journey. This is just a carvery as far as I know but everything was well cooked. The breakfast was good too, although being not too far from the sea some smoked haddock would have been nice, but it was a good standard breakfast assortment. The room was lovely and large with really cumfy bed and large bathroom. I would certainly stay again.

    « Best Western »

A lovely little village to visit which is within easy access of Brighton and Worthing. Hotel was clean, comfortable and food was ok but a little too much like school dinners. I would go to this hotel again and eat there, as the prices were very reasonable even if the food wasn't great.

    « Good food »

Nice choice for the starters , choice of hot or cold buffet style, choice of usual meat selection, but excellent in taste & texture, beef was melt in the mouth...also offer vegetarian, fish, casseroles....service was very good and was served by friendly staff...

    « Super-duper Staff »

I could go on about the nice clean rooms or the generous carvery they serve up. But lets hear it for the staff. I stayed last Saturday night and they had a big wedding on. The staff were clearly mega busy but they kept their cool and continued to give fantastically good service. Some were even there serving breakfast next morning. Oh and the breakfast was better than I've had in 5* hotels.

    « Food for oldies »

A once glorious dining experience turned into a mush of mediocrity and semolina, they used to include actual caviar in their starters but now it's degenerated into a bland, grey and tasteless shadow of its former self. It has turned into a pit stop for geriatrics and those enroute to a Warner village holiday, the fact that we appeared to be the youngest there( we are in our forties) spoke volumes, not to say that silver foxes and vixens don't have taste and panache but this lot would have enthused over stale battenburg and tripe ( which was probably on the menu but unrecognisable) Old tollgate lives up to its name ... As my old teacher used to say, must try harder... Although he was probably dining there too

    « Good value carvery. »

Had an enjoyable meal at the carvery.Had excellent lentil soup to start while my partner had the cold table and cane back with a mound of quiches, scotch eggs and cold meats.Went up to the carvery and chef carved a selection of roast beef and the gammon. The waiter asked what veg and gravies you wanted and brought it to the table. The plates were hot.Huge selection of hot and cold desserts to select.I had the cheesecake and some fruit. If you had room a cheese course was there but we did not have room for it. Staff pleasant and helpful.Worth a visit.

Very nice hotel and staff very pleasant. Located in a village with a Chinse, Indian and pub restaurants. Remains of a castle very near and local church. Carvery on special offer £6.75 for parts of May and June, checked their web site.

« This is how to run a great hotel »

We went for a couple of days to this hotel and what a nice experience we had. Great rooms with all the necessary items included. The food was excellent at a sensible price with a wide choice offered. Car parking was easy and staff all friendly and hard working. We will be returning to this hotel soon as it is close to the South Downs and the coast . Well done to The Old Tollgate hotel.

    « Would stay again »

Lovely hotel in a very pretty village. Rooms very comfortable. Carvery restaurant good value and lots of choice. At weekends in the summer it can be very busy as there are often wedding parties staying. Plenty of space in the car park. A short walk to Bramber Castle with views over countryside.

« Great location in a quiet village »

This hotel is situated in a quaint village with its own ruined castle. Nearby there is a tudor house called StMary's which makes an interesting visit. The hotel has character and was first built in the 1700's. There is a carvery restaurant with a big choice of meats and vegetables. The breakfast buffet again had a big variety of food. The accommodation is split into areas. We stayed in the Westgate wing oposite the main hotel entrance. It is a great hotel within a 20 minute drive of Brighton without the high prices!

« Average hotel average food »

We stayed here for a night as a trial run for a forthcoming function, we checked in and the two receptionist couldn't even raise a smile or have any sort of a welcolming personality. The room was a good size and very clean and comfortable no complaints there, we had booked for dinner and was met by a serly trainee in a suit, who showed us to our table,, we went up for the starters which were pretty average compaired to how it used to be here years ago, the chef started to ask too many questions like where do you work, is it a day off ,where do you come from etc. it was quite intrusive. The carvery meat was ok but very limited selection of vegetables which were then dished up by the guy in the suit which I thought very odd especially as at any other carvery you help yourself to as much as you like, and then he had to deliver it to your table, all totally unnecessary unless you needed help. also all the plates were cold. I could name at least four other carveries in my area that are better value and better quality, the breakfast was very average and certainly not worth £12 95. with very weak tasteless coffee, I don't think we will be booking this hotel again,

« Top renovated old building »

The building was renovated in a very pleasant way, keeping the old structures, offering inside a warm and nice, "British Flair"; the rooms are spacy, well equipped with state of the art bathrooms. I can only higly recommend this Hotel in his quiet Environment with the view to the ruins of an ancient castle

    « Comfort with excellence »

Stayed at the Old Tollgate for 2 nights early in May. Well appointed hotel in a quiet location in Bramber (Steyning). Could perhaps be called a bit quaint or old-fashioned internally, but I liked it a lot as a change from the ultra modern places where one can stay these days; our room had a proper dressing table and wardrobe. Staff were friendly and welcoming without being intrusive. A place where we felt comfortable and at home. Breakfast provided excellent choice for full English and continental. We used room service one evening and it was the most prompt service I have had in a hotel. As the weather was fine our party was pleased to be able to use the garden, located secludedly at the back. I would thoroughly recommend the Old Tollgate.

Stayed at this hotel 29/04/16 for 3 days and it was an excellent break. The staff were very friendly and attentive, food was very good and rooms clean and comfortable. The hotel is about a20 minute drive from Brighton, excellent location.I cannot end this review without mentioning the Maharaja restaurant 200 yards from the hotel which provided the best Indin food I have ever tasted. All in all an excellent weekend.

« Old Tollgate's starters take their toll. »

This lovely hotel, with its superb restaurant, lacks only one thing: a really comfortable residents' lounge. Otherwise, it is hard to fault. The Old Tollgate is hugely popular largely because of its restaurant. Its lunchtime and evening carvery meals start off with a vast selection of "serve yourself" starters and - to coin a phrase - the Old Tollgate takes its toll. You have to consciously leave room for the main course, carved in front of your eyes. The sweets are yummy, too. If you plan to go and eat at the weekend, book first! Rooms are comfortable, although not all in the main building, and the staff are marvellous. There's plenty of car parking space, and the remains of Bramber Castle to explore right across the road.

    « The Old Tollgate »

We've been walking the South Downs Way and found Steyning to be a good start/finish point for the section we did. The Old Tollgate is a good place to stay; our room was really well kept, up to date and comfortable. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and dinners and breakfasts really enjoyable. Our thanks to Sarah Wakelin in particular for her excellent customer service.

    « Exceptional »

We have not been to this restaurant for many years and I don't know why we have stayed away. We went for dinner on a Thursday evening and there were some great deals. A main course was £6.75 and any other course was £5.75. There was a good variety for starters hot and cold. My husband helped himself to cold starters of salad , fish and cold meats which he said were delicious. My son had garlic mushrooms which were equally tasty. You could also have had soup. The carvery looked extremely inviting - 4 choices of roast meat, braised steak in peppercorn sauce, sausages, fish and nut roast and mushroom stroganoff for vegetarians. The desserts were beautiful and so scrumptious, we were not surprised to hear that they have their own pastry chef. The service was excellent and surroundings pleasant and characterful. I really could not fault anything.

    « A pleasant break »

Situated in a pretty little village not too far from Brighton. A small, comfortable hotel. Staff excellent. Food very good as long as you remember that the restaurant is, basically, a carvery. Very busy on a Sunday lunch time.

« A little hard to find but worth the effort »

This hotel is tucked away on a side road not far from a small town. The first thing you need to know is get your directions to the hotel from Google maps before you start. The hotel is listed as being in Steyning. But in fact it is close by. The hotel staff was gracious and the rooms were as advertised. But this hotel had two things I have found hard to find in the UK, a bathroom with both good and a magnifying makeup mirror and a soaker tub. I enjoyed both immensely. The on-site parking lot was great with lots of room. The restaurant is very acceptable serving both dinner and a full breakfast. I am pretty picky but would give the food a 3 at best. But the fact that you do not have to leave the hotel makes it very nice.

    « One night stay »

Went we with friends for one night, location is in a very nice village that is opposite castle ruins. Some lively local pubs nearby. Unimpressed by the evening meal so we went to the local Indian restaurant and pub. The hotel its self was lovely only improve could be on the seating within the bar area not a lot unless you are eating as well. Rooms were of a good size clean and tidy. Had all you needed for night stay. Breakfast was good.

    5
« Excellent service and restaurant very good »

2nd time to this hotel and glad to say the service remains excellent , the restaurant is a carvery with a large selection of starters, main & puddings . The room was on the ground floor and serviced every day to a good standard, parking was ok , our stay was for 5 nights and we will stay here again.

    2
    « One night stay »

The evening meal was a carvery. Main course was all right. Puddings very mediocre. Tried profiteroles and they were dry. Breakfast all right. Orange juice poor. Left genuine sheepskin slippers behind but rang Reception on reaching home. They said housekeeping had all left. They agreed to check and would ring the next day (Saturday ) They didn't. The slippers cost £55. How could housekeeping not have noticed them? Not happy.

We were going to watch our Son in Law run in the Brighton Marathon and had searched via Trip Advisor in Brighton but nothing ticked all the boxes. So we decided on a re visit to the Old Tollgate Hotel at Bramber and catch the train from Shoreham to Brighton. We were very pleased to find the same Staff at the Hotel with the same friendly welcome.

Noisy as sound proofing isn't great. Breakfast was good Dinner in restaurant was okay - good choice of starters but overcooked meat. Room was cold so had to sleep with heating on full. Comfortable and clean. Okay considering the price but wouldn't rush back in a hurry!

    « Superb Hotel »

One of the very best Best Western hotels we have stayed at. The standard of the room was excellent and the food was superb. Close to the coast and the South Downs National Park so plenty to do. We would highly recommend the hotel for a leisurely break.

« Great room and great service »

My wife and I spent two nights here for a family get-together nearby. We were late arriving but there was someone at the desk who checked us in and took my wife's case and showed us to the room personally. The room was immaculate with a very clean and modern bathroom. The bed was extremely comfortable. Our tariff included breakfast which was really good with the hot breakfast being served to you from the breakfast bar. The staff were very attentive and I would have no hesitation in returning here in future.

    « Easter Sunday Lunch »

We had pre booked our table for six for 2pm and was eventually shown to our table, the starters were all fine the problem started when we came to the Carvary the chap that was doing the carving then had to do the vegetables as there was no one to help him obviously the restaurant did not have enough staff and this is not good enough considering we had to pay a premium to have Sunday lunch at The Old Tollgate Hotel & Restaurant. The puddings were all fine let's hope they can improve on the staff situation B B

    « 35 people for Sunday lunch »

Exceptional. The only word I can use . Having arrived from a 4* hotel to join family for meal , the waiting staff beat that hands down as did food . We had a private room to meet and greet with drinks , then private dinning room . The young lady in charge of our room was fantastic and all went smoothly . We're a bit worried about carvery food but it was the best we'd ever had . Would return no question.

« Time out with friends. »

We were a group of 5 couples celebrating birthdays taking advantage of £95 per couple Dinner, B & B promotion. The hotel is extremely clean -not even any suitcase scuff marks in corridors. The staff were very efficient and courteous. The food was plentiful and good quality -it was well cooked - no overcooked vegetables. Our bed was huge and very comfortable (good mattress) Very relaxed atmosphere. We all enjoyed ourselves. Brilliant !

    « Lovely Anniversary Week-end »

I have just come back from my parents Golden Wedding Anniversary and have had a wonderful time. The staff were fantastic to my parents and the Trainee Manager made their day very special to them, and nothing was to much trouble. The food was lovely and they were very accomodating, and all of the guests had a lovely time. Some even said that they would like to come back and stay! The selection of food is great and even the picky eaters in our party found lots to eat, and at no time were you rushed. Even breakfast the following day was great. Would I go back again .... Yes (it was not the first time we had eaten there). Would I recommend anybody else to eat or stay there ... Yes

    « Wonderful Bramber. »

Bramber is a lovely peaceful village with great amenities - only 15 minutes drive from Brighton or Worthing but away from the bustle. The Old Tollgate has all you need. Spacious bedrooms, clean bathrooms, good restaurant (fab breakfast) and friendly staff.

    « A wonderful find !! »

What a wonderful find this hotel is !! Staff were very friendly and couldnt do enough for us. Room was modern, clean and spacious. Dinner was excellent with plenty on offer and waiting staff who were excellent. The only slight negative is the small bar area but it wasnt a big issue for us. Setting is in a picture postcard village which just adds to the charm of the hotel. Will definitely visit again.

    « Return visit »

We have been visiting for years, infact we staying when we got married almost 19 years ago. When ever we come to visit family we always come for an evening meal. Over the years we have noticed small changes however last night was the most disappointing. We had arranged to meet friends and had traveled a long way. We are looking renew our wedding vows and had thought we would visit and see what rooms would be available. The service used to be so friendly but we were "greeted" by a sullen man who wasn't friendly at all. When we asked for a jug of water to accompany our drinks he slammed it down on the table so hard it spilt,he just walked away.We were sat in a side and ordered drinks and showed the voucher I had printed off. Now to the food, we have always enjoyed the cold buffet, two of the party of five returned to the table with just a couple of items on their plates and once finished returned to get a little more, equating to less than my one plate. The carvary is nothing like it used to be, the gammon was so salty we couldn't eat it, the potatoes are frozen roasts and thin gravy. When it came to pay the bill the manager stated she had seen people return to the buffet so would be charging twice. I hadn't seen it on the voucher that it was a single visit, genuine mistake. I felt she should have then said at the time or by the original waiter. We only paid one extra but it really did finish off a disappointing visit, I can see things are going downhill which is such a shame.it was on the top of our list for our vow renewal for venues but sadly now out of the question.

    « Late valentines treat »

We stayed here after lots of recommendations and we weren't disappointed at all, our room was amazing and very aptly named their bridal suite. The bed was four poster and very comfortable and clean, the bathroom was so lovely s double jacuzzi bath and huge shower it was lovely. Unfortunately the same can't be said of our meal the service was good and people were pleasant but the food was dreadful, runny gravy, badly cooked roasts, meat was chewy and over cooked and when we decided on the cheese board it was old cheese which was crusty and hard and shouldn't have been on display for anybody I real disappointment on the food but a fab hotel.

    « Pot Luck »

The Old Tollgate hotel and restaurant was such a lucky find. Set within a small unassuming village of Bramber close to the large town of Steyning. Our room was a good size, clean and light. The Carvery restaurant was extremely good value, run in a friendly and efficient manner. Breakfast was filling and cooked just how we like it. All the staff were very helpful and polite. A great place to stay. We will return. PS. Room 302 has a view of Bramber Castle, an added bonus.

« Excellent in every way »

We booked the Gate Room for our family of 20 to celebrate our dad's 90th birthday on Saturday. From the moment we arrived, the service and care we received was out of this world. Nothing was too much trouble for Martin who looked after us throughout. He was such a star. The staff training in this hotel must be first class as every member of staff in the bar and the carvery went out of their way to be friendly and helpful. The food was great, especially the desserts. What an amazing selection. Highly recommend this restaurant and can't wait to go back. Thank you!

    « Return visit »

We fell in love with this hotel on our first visit. Parking is plentiful in the car park of this smart hotel in the pretty, tiny village of Bramber. Our room, on the first floor, was perfect in every way. Breakfast was plentiful, dinner was delicious and plentiful too. Our only gripe was the waiting staff in the dining room at dinner who forgot about us on our two evenings, leaving us waiting for our wine on the first and leaving us waiting for our table for half an hour on the second evening (we could see the empty table). Those things apart, we would happily return, and in fact hope to do so sooner rather than later. A lovely place to recharge our batteries!

    4
    « Comfortable enough »

We only stayed here one night. The checkin/checkout processes were quick (I like that). The room was good, but the bed was too soft. My only complaint was that the room we stayed in on the 2nd floor did not have a good shower - the water only trickled out so I had to settle for a bath instead. Tea and coffee facilities are available with a twin pack of biscuits. Always a good touch. The room also has a good flat screen TV, although we didn't use it. The breakfast buffet was great and had many options !

    5
    « Lovely cream tea! »

We had a cream tea in the lounge and it was served with fresh strawberries and little mint chocolate biscuits. The little touches made all the difference and we really enjoyed the experience. The carvery also looked excellent as we passed by.

« A very comfortable hotel close to Brighton at a reasonable rate. »

I have actually stayed at this hotel in the past but this is my first review. Stayed here just the one night when on a business trip and the room I had was very comfortable and nicely decorated, well lit, clean and well appointed. My room was number 314 and was in one of the 'wings' off from the main hotel. Breakfast was included in my GB£83.70 Standard Double Room rate and it was an exceptional breakfast buffet in deed. I travel globally on a regular basis and this breakfast buffet was the best I've ever had in a Best Western Hotel - Superb. There is free car parking on-site and Free WiFi in the rooms, although this did drop out from time to time and so could be an area for improvement. In short I would certainly stay here again if wanting accommodation in the Worthing / Brighton area for either business or leisure.

    « Great location »

We needed somewhere to stay between Brighton, Worthing and Shoreham and this was in an ideal spot. The room was a little dated and the bathroom needed a good scrub, but it was value for money, warm and the beds were comfortable - I booked a twin room and it was obvious to see that it is usually used as a double as the beds were pushed together - not ideal for turning lights on/off from the bed (unless you have an extendable arm!) but OK. Breakfast was nice and evening meal was good value for money. Free wifi which was bonus, but it was a little bit sporadic so if I needed to do more work it might have been a problem. I'd probably stay again if in the area.

    5
    « Delightful short break »

Stayed for three nights at the hotel. Found the room quiet, clean and comfortable. The staff were courteous and very helpful. Both breakfast and dinner were first class, although the restaurant tended to be rather busy in the evening, but very quiet in the morning. A thoroughly enjoyable short break - highly recommended.

    « Quaint village »

We have stayed here twice in recent years, the first time we stayed in an executive suite and last year we booked a regular room and ended up in a ground floor suite. The hotel is spotless and well run and the staff courteous and professional rather than friendly. We did not have dinner there as we love the Bramber Dragon, but breakfast is extensive and satisfying. Beautiful surroundings and not cheap, but for what you get it isn't expensive either.

    5
« New Years Eve Gala »

We are regular diners at The Old Tollgate but have never booked a New Year or Hotel room there before so we were keen to give it a try. We were not disappointed. From the moment we arrived, the Staff were friendly and welcoming, our room was spotlessly clean, quiet and welcoming. Tea and coffee facilities were plentiful and we had a nice big bathroom. The New Year's Eve Gala Dinner was totally amazing, welcome drinks, followed by a leisurely 6 courses of amazing food. The Haggis was 'piped' in by a real bagpipe player in authentic Scottish attire. There were 'goodie' bags for everybody and very good quality Christmas Crackers, the staff joined in with the revelry where appropriate and the atmosphere was just great. There was a DJ playing mostly Abba hits but with a few others thrown in - I don't think anybody was left sitting! At midnight the bagpipes made a reappearance, everybody sang Auld Langs Syne(??) kissed and hugged before following the piper through the village to see the fire works. All of this was followed by more dancing (and booze). The cost included brunch the following morning, and this again was beautifully served, fresh and tasty. We can't wait to do it again - will definitely be booking for the next New Year and bringing friends!

« Very comfortable stop over »

Visiting family and friends in the area and this hotel was conveniently located. Do use the post code to locate as it is not in Steyning but actually in Bramber. Staff very helpful and obliging. The room was very comfortable and the Breakfast was plentiful. Would certainly stay again if we were in the area.

    « A night of comfort »

A lovely old hotel brought up to a very good standard. Feeling of cosiness without feeling cramped. Staff very attentive when needed but not 'pestering'. Good, basic English cooking - you will not go hungry at the carvery buffet neither for breakfast. Comfortable, spacious room and bed with a lovely showeroom with very good quality fittings. Room a bit gloomy and could be cold in bad weather. Space to lounge and relax.

    5
    « Very Relaxing »

This is a beautiful hotel and very relaxing. Just come home from dinner, bed and breakfast which i husband had treated me to for my birthday. Its in a lovely quiet location in the village of Bramber but i would guess in the summer would have lovely walks around the area. The food is more than excellent here with the best carvery I have had. Its not just the norm. The service is again excellent with such a large choice on starters which is buffet style. Be careful not to eat too much but you are not rushed in any way so you can stagger the three courses comfortably. The room was very cosy and comfortable and quiet and a sound nights sleep that I don"t normally get at home. I think that was due to the pure relaxation of the place. Breakfast had another large choice and was perfect. Defiantly would recommend this.

    « Nice hotel »

We stayed in a superior room on the ground floor in the converted house next to the hotel for 2 nights. For our room, you had to go outside and up and down some steps to get to the restaurant - so maybe not good for elderly or less mobile people - but no problem for us. Our room was a nice size, nicely decorated and comfortable bed. We had a big walk-in shower. Room and shower room nice and warm. Nice breakfast but a little disorganised. Help yourself to cold food, toast & sauces / hot food served by staff / order tea or coffee from waiter/ess if you can find one/catch their eye. Unfortunately, there was not always a member of staff present to take your room number, explain the process or serve the hot food. We overheard quite a number of people question between themselves what to do. In many hotels there is a head waiter/ess to organise this aspect and ensure everyone that comes in is welcomed and told how the buffet system works & take their tea/coffee order - this would improve the service no end. However, the staff that we did meet were friendly and helpful.

    4
    « OK Stay »

We stayed here for 3 nights to visit Brighton and surrounding areas. We stayed in a "Superior" room (No. 314) but were surprised when we arrived to be told this was in a satellite building, Sunnycroft, (basically a detached house next to the hotel). The room itself was clean, well decorated with all normal amenities but nothing special to warrant the extra price. One of the main problems with the room was the a/c unit which was very noisy and we had to switch it off in order to get to sleep but that meant it was cold in the morning. Additionally, there was a loud low pitched pulsating "hum" which we originally thought was the a/c unit but it continued even when we turned this off and was very intrusive and affected our sleep. Our other main issue was that to get to the restaurant for breakfast and the evening meal we had to negotiate 2 sets of steps and 30 yards of outside pathway which in January and very rainy weather was not what we were expecting for a "superior" stay.

    « A Gem of a Hotel »

I accidentally discovered this hotel and now will not stay anywhere else when in the area. Friendly staff with well appointed rooms and an excellent restaurant. The carvery in the evening is brilliant with plenty of choices to suit everyone. The staff are attentive without being pushy, and provide excellent service.

    « Simply Brilliant »

I chose this hotel because it had a decent review and was convenient for a theatre that we were visiting. It turned out to be a most amazing place. Our room was more like a luxury apartment and everything was absolutely perfect except the weather, and even I couldn't blame Best Western for that!

    « New Year celebrations »

A wonderful way to celebrate new year with a gala dinner/disco and an overnight stay. We enjoyed a 6 course dinner of exceptional quality, the ABBA themed disco went very well with most guests joining in who then followed the piper down Bramber high street at midnight. Our standard room was better than many a superior we have stayed in elsewhere. Breakfast /brunch was amazing, with so much choice but, best of all, was the staff, especially Maria who is charming and looked after us so well. We intend to return for our wedding anniversary in November.

    « A lovely place to stay »

We stayed here for my boyfriends birthday, we booked a room with a four poster bed and jacuzzi which was situated in the bedroom, a little strange but it was actually very nice. The room was ample size and very clean. Breakfast was extra but there was lots to choose from. Bar area and staff were very nice and we had a lovely stay.

    « Wonderful Christmas »

This hotel provides good accommodation and the staff are very helpful and kind and nothing asked of them is too much trouble. We stayed other Christmas and this was a wonderful experience, good food , lots of different choice options to chose from , very friendly staff especially the restaurant staff who really worked hard to make your stay enjoyable. Michael was very good with our grandchildren and always extremely helpful in meeting our needs. Also Nicky was great as usual and all the staff and Chefs went out of the way to make our stay over Christmas wonderful. We have stayed at this hotel quite a lot over the past year and never been disappointed.

« A completely perfect way to bring in the New Year »

It's New Year's Day 2016 and we have just returned from an overnight stay at this hotel. Our room (107) was fab - a spa bath in the corner of a beautiful bedroom with a 4 poster bed !! Plenty of tea, coffee etc., well stocked mini bar, comfy bed, lovely and clean, everything you could want except a view. Although every available inch of space in the hotel itself was given over to laid up tables for the evening dinner, the older parts of the building were atmospheric and it was all comfortable. The New Year event was a 6 course meal. The dining areas were beautifully decorated and the tables looked lovely. Every course was cooked and presented perfectly. The staff were lovely - fun and friendly. The drink was typical pub price and although the selection wasn't extensive, there was something for everyone. The evening event itself was wonderful - a fully kilted up piper strolled through the building every so often treating us to stirring bagpipe playing, a disco gave the mainly middle aged crowd exactly what they wanted from Motown to modern with all the usual floor fillers. Then at midnight everyone followed the piper through the village where the locals joined in the celebrations and the bonhomie overflowed. We booked into this hotel and its New Years Eve event at the last minute after a search on line for something to go to. We can't believe how lucky we were ending up here. It really was the perfect New Year's eve and I fully recommend the place.

    « Great food...not so great hotel »

We have stayed at The Old Tollgate many times but, lately have, noticed how the standards have fallen. This is now an average hotel saved by its excellent food. The carvery is one of the best in the business and the breakfast is quite excellent as well. But if you stay overnight, ask for a room at the back. The noise on the front can be high. The rooms are hot so you need a window open that adds to the traffic noise. The beds are not very comfortable either. When last there, we mentioned these things but go little reaction. I think we need to stay elsewhere and go there for the restaurant only.

    « Relaxing stay »

I booked this hotel using my tescos vouchers. Sometimes doing that you risk being given a small room and somehow second rate service, however everything about this hotel was great. The receptionist was competent and helpful, the room, an executive King, was spacious, clean and quiet. The restaurant is slightly unusual, in that dinner is a carvery, but you also help yourself to starters and sweet as well! Don't let that put you off. The meals were well cooked and the staff attentive. The location is great too - close to Brighton and the South Downs. If you fancy a stroll after dinner, the 11th century castle and church in Bramber are opposite the hotel and worth a visit. Well done Old Tollgate - you merit 5 stars.

    « Not what I expected ?? »

After reading all the review's , I booked a leisure break for our Anniversary, Firstly I would like to say the staff at this hotel are all very nice . Having time to think about our stay , I really feel it was over priced , the room was an executive room but really was nothing special !!! And nothing like some of the other executive room I have stayed in at other hotels . The breakfast was nice and fresh , the evening meal , had the same hot starter both nights which is really not on and very disappointing if you are staying on a 2 night Leisure break. The cold starter was also the same both nights . On the first night we had the carvey and that was nice , second night we had one of the specials as we didn't fancy the roast again , really wish we had the cavery two nights running as we was really disappointed with our meal on the second night . If you are planning a 2 night break maybe just stay for one night .

    « Excellent »

    « Not very happy. »

We couldn't say what it was like to stay at this hotel, as there was a confusion with our booking and the reception staff were not helpful and were very quick to blame us with the confusion, even though we had paid the full amount for the hotel room but they did not have our room ready. We were meant to be staying at this hotel for our anniversary and after arriving early (we were aware of the book in time of 3pm, but we wanted some recommendations for what to do in the area.) the man at reception told us no other information besides the fact we were too early and could only book in at 3pm before turning his back on us. After making our own amusement for the day (the area is very quaint) we went back at 3:00 and they did not have our room, despite having reference numbers and email confirmations. We asked if there was any spare rooms that we could pay for (in addition to the price we had already paid) and they said no and refused any further help. Luckily we spent our anniversary a few doors along at the castle inn who were far more welcoming! As I said if our booking hadn't been messed up I am sure the stay would be lovely but I would make sure it is on their system before arrival!

    « A relaxing Hotel »

I booked again to stay after the London to Brighton Car Run. had to change one of the rooms at the last minute from a double to a twin. Was that a problem? No as nothing ever seems to be a problem here. The rooms were very clean and spacious, and the beds comfortable. TV's with remotes that worked and plenty of hot water for showers. I had 3 friends with me and we ate in the Restaurant. They had never been to a Carvery where the staff brought your plate to the table for you. They thought that was a nice touch. The food was hot and tasty and all the staff friendly. Parking is ample, even for the likes of me with a trailer in tow. I'd recommend this hotel to anyone and have suggested to another Hotel they should visit to see how a place is properly run. It's quiet, restful, not expensive for the level of service. Hope to stay there again next year.

« Excellent and friendly hotel in superb location »

We have often had lunch at the Old Tollgate Restaurant and found their carvery provided most enjoyable food at a reasonable price. Unable to put everyone up for a family event we recommended the Old Tollgate Hotel to some of our long distant travellers. All commented on the friendly atmosphere and spacious clean rooms. They liked the village location and with easy access to Brighton and Worthing. Everyone enjoyed the breakfast and food from the restaurant. Although fairly local we are now tempted to stay there ourselves !

    « Very welcome »

At the forth attempt at finding an acceptable Hotel in order to visit our family in the Portslade area we managed to book in at the Tolgate. What a relief, excellent accommodation ,super breakfast and a welcoming bar later for a drink. And excellent value, will be booking again soon to avoid disappointment.

« Wonderful Hotel, Friendly Staff »

Best Western: Old Tollgate Hotel and Restaurant: Fabulous hotel in a lovely village, very close to Brighton and Worthing. Really enjoyed my recent stay. I had a lovely spacious room and a great bathroom, can't fault the staff, especially liked the room service!

« lovely hotel in good location. »

We stayed here for 2 nights in preference to staying in Brighton to be able to visit an elderly friend in a home in Ovingdean. Plenty of parking spaces. The room we had was very spacious and well furnished with two chairs, also electric socket near mirror to do my hair, something we don,t always get. Beds were rather soft for us but I still had a good nights sleep it was so quiet. The only negative for this room for us was it being the disabled access room the sink in the bathroom was very low. However, we managed. We ate in the restaurant on both nights having a carvery. The food was very well presented and plenty of choice. Breakfasts were very good too. We really enjoyed our stay and will probably stay again on our next visit. Thanks to all the staff who were friendly and helpful.

« Nice hotel with lovely room »

Spent one night in this hotel and was very impressed with the room. Very comfortable night. Lovely breakfast and the staff were very professional. One small point was that the bar needed to be a bit more welcolming as there was limited seating with a lot more room being given to the restaurant.

    « Amazing »

I stayed here last night before the only fools and horses convention in Worthing. I was in Room 104. Check in was quick and easy and the beds were comfortable. The evening meal was a carvery was out of this world. Plenty of food to eat. The pork was perfect with lots of crackling. We had the full 3 courses with a coffee at the end and it came to £58. Not bad at all I would def stay here again.

    « Superb Hotel »

The hotel is well known for it's carvery and we certainly weren't disappointed. The staff are very polite and courteous. We upgraded to an executive room and it was a very comfortable and spacious room. The hotel is in a brilliant location. There are many lovely walks surrounding the hotel. Within easy reach of Brighton.

    « BEAUTIFUL »

Had a short break at Bramber and loved every minute. Beautiful quiet location, lovely walks, and within easy access to many attractions. The hotel was a pleasure to stay in, quality breakfasts and a relaxed restaurant with great food. Would highly recommend.

« Lovely hotel in gorgeous village »

We stayed overnight after walking the South Downs way. Great hotel - looked like more than a three star. Our room was in the annex. Spotlessly clean and beautifully turned out. Comfy bed, fabulous bathroom and shower and really friendly staff. We didn't have dinner as we wanted to explore the village. But we had a nice nightcap before bed and breakfast was really nice.

    « extremely nice hotel »

We spent 3 days at this hotel and could not fault the room, service and restaurant, it's location is perfect for Worthing seafront, Shoreham and Lancing . The hotel is next to Bramber Castle , Bramber being a nice quiet village with decent pub's and restaurants, altogether a lovely place to stay--I will be going back.

    « Very comfortable hotel »

Very comfortable hotel which we have stayed in 4 times before. Always a very high standard which includes rooms, staff and lovely food. It is a good location as in a very quiet, quaint village yet near to Brighton, Worthing and other Sussex Coast attractions

« Lovely hotel set in amzing countryside »

We need to be close to Brighton and Lancing and found this hotel. It is well located and is surrounded by fabulous scenery and walks. The village is lovely. The room was spacious and very comfortable. The bathroom very spacious and sparkling clean. The only negative comment is that I would have liked a softer pillow! Other than that it was great as was the food in the carvery. A great find and well priced! Its not luxury but it is extremely comfortable and very clean and fresh. Parking is easy too - there's loads of space. There was a lovely castle ruins to walk to - just a few yards away.

« Overnight stay en route »

Good welcome, room lovely and quiet, whole position of hotel away from main road noise, so really lovely. Breakfast staff very helpful, great bacon sandwich and tea to go as we were in a hurry. Arrived later in evening so had already eaten elsewhere so cannot comment on dining or bar.

    « Nearly Excellent »

Stayed here for 3 nights as we were attending a wedding. Good setting and no complaints with room it was well kept, infact all of the hotel was looked after. Food was excellent, with an adequate selection (carvery) and the staff very helpful and friendly. We asked for a room in a quiet part of the hotel and we were in an annexe which was only a minute from reception and similarly from the car park (a flat walk) so not a problem, note the annexe does not have a lift. The room 310 overlooked the garden area. The only down side was that on the Friday evening they had a group booked in for an event and the music (very loud) went on until midnight and people outside in the garden talking and drinking until nearly 2am so could not get to sleep. We phoned the night porter who said it would finish at midnight but could do nothing about it. On checking out mentioned this inconvenience and was told "well they can have music until midnight" which was no consolation to us as we could not sleep, they said all thay could do was give us £20 off the bill, "no Good Night Guarantee here". A very disappointing response!

    « Autumn weekend break »

Nice clean and friendly hotel based in a cute village, Beds extremely comfortable - thought the dark wood made it quite gloomy in the bar and restaurant, but minor issue as everything else was lovely and this is just a personal view

« Great Stay, Great food. »

We have stayed and eaten at the Tollgate on a number of occasions over many years and the service and food has always been of the highest quality. This time we stayed for a couple of nights. The room was spacious and comfortable with all the facilities and plenty of plugs for chargers. The food was really good and the staff were very friendly. We had a big party and everyone had a great time. Unfortunately one of our party was taken ill but the staff were very helpful our waitress Maria was amazing, she told us she was staying in our room near ours and we could knock on her door in the night if we needed anything, luckily no further help was needed but it was very reassuring to know she was there. I would recommend the Old Tollgate to anyone.

« Perfect mid range Place to Stay »

We've stayed here a few times, as its close to places we want to visit, the rooms are super, we prefer the annexe as its really quiet there, although this is hardly a noisy joint. No suites as such but the superior rooms are spacious and warm, you can adjust heating. Good tea etc tray and minibar. Toiletries. Our rooms had new bathrooms so no dodgy mastic etc which is obligatory in so many UK hotels. The food is fresh, superb, partly self service but every kind of cold starter, good mains inc some innovative meat dishes and vast selection of desserts. Carvery dinner and lunch too. Vegetarian options. It's easy to stick to a diet here as there are many healthy options. Plenty for breakfast, you could have several courses there if you wanted, all hots and continentals. Can't fault the place really. Not cheap but not really expensive either. Communal areas are the large bar with sitting room bit, and a mid size room for afternoon tea. No views particularly from here but sited near several beauty spots inc nearby Bramber Castle, what's left of it. Bramber is a beautiful little village with some gardens open to public in summer. Staff can't do enough for you, from supplying toiletries you forgot to bring or room issues. We even had a spare heater in our room, not needed. Trouser press, two irons! NB photos were taken after we'd untidied the room!

    « Great food »

Excellent hotel. Good sized rooms which were comfortable and clean. Modern bathrooms and facilities. Food consists of a carvery and a few specials. Very good value with the vouchers which were left in the rooms. Lots of locals eating is a good sign of decent food and it was. Piping hot and delicious. After eating I was served coffee in the lounge. Breakfast was good too and the service from all was first class. A pretty hotel in a pretty village. This would be great base to explore the area. If in the area again I would stay definitely stay here again.

    « celebrations »

Twice we have celebrated family events there. Always great staff, clean rooms, superb carvery, and gardens. Their accounting procedures let them down. We've rented multiple rooms and every time we have had to meet with management to correct their inconsistency. Even though it's just one detail it is frustrating.
