"Convenient and nice view"

3
vivitag, Hong Kong, China 13/09/2019

The hotel is old fashioned style and bathroom really needs a renovation. But the bedding quality was good. The view from the room was lovely. The Breakfast needs improvements as well. Poor choice with industrial cereals. The buffet is not attractive. The full scottish breakfast was over cooked and not tasty at all. I got stucked in the elevator , I couldn't open the doors and luckily someone called the elevator on another floor so it restarted. I got dinner there. The food was too salty and overcooked but the menu was appealing. No safety box...which is unbelievable nowadays and no fridge bar.

"Great Stay!!"

User 11/09/2019

We just got back from dropping our twin daughters off at St. Andrews for their freshman year. We stayed at the Scores from September 4 - 7. It was a wonderful stay. Staff was so kind and helpful with everything, especially helping us send out our 4 bags of laundry! Room was great and location and view is just amazing. We will definitely be back!

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you, thank you, thank you.... what a lovely review and I can assure you all our team appreciate your kind words. We hope your daughters enjoy St Andrews and have had a great fresher's week! We look forward to welcoming you back to your new home from home for the next 4 years! kind regards Molly

"Old Course hotel you have to stay at in St Andrews"

harrys872, Utica, New York 03/09/2019

The rooms, the ambiance, the food in the restaurant and above all the service provided by the staff, make this a must-stay if you are golfing or sight-seeing in St. Andrews. You will get value for the money you spend.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much, we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay. Our team loved meeting you and are delighted that you felt they helped make your stay more enjoyable. Come back again soon! kind regards Molly

"Pleasant and accommodating bar and restaurant with a great view"

Robert F, London, United Kingdom 16/08/2019

We popped in for food and drink in the bar and ended up in the restaurant. Good selection of cask ales on tap. In the restaurant, the starters were excellent and the main courses were good. Overall it was good value for money and Kevin and Charlie looked after us. The reason we stopped off there was because it had a great view across the old course and bay area and there were items on the menu that we all liked the look of.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your lovely review of our bar and restaurant. It is a great place to enjoy a drink and a meal and of course the view! We are glad you enjoyed it Hope to see you again soon regards Molly

"A warm welcome - and a great location"

4
Strathallan, Stirling, United Kingdom 15/08/2019

We had a short visit to this hotel in July - and really enjoyed our stay; there was a friendly welcome at Reception when we arrived, and we were promptly shown to our room, which was spacious and comfortable. At breakfast the next morning - everyone was friendly and welcoming - and that really does make a difference. You leave the hotel saying that you would be very happy to return - and that was our experience. (It's worth noting that the hotel's location - close to the heart of all the golfing action - means that room rates can be high; and the small Car Park area at the rear of the hotel is helpful when the town is busy).

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your lovely review. I have passed your kind comments on to our team who do, as you mention, try their very best to make our guests stay as friendly and comfortable as possible. We hope to see you again kind regards Molly

"Wouldn't stay here again"

Andre M, Worcester, MA 06/08/2019

This place desperately needs renovation!!! Like the Best Western in Ilkley, Yorkshire Dales, the only part of our hotel room that was renovated was the bathroom, BUT it has a staircase (???) between the toilet and the sink. So there is ample opportunity to fall and get hurt in the middle of the night. Bathrooms should NOT have stairs! Period. We got stuck in the elevator 3 times and finally walked upstairs and downstairs. Of course the reception acted as if the elevator is fine, but other hotel guests told us that the elevator often gets stuck. How soothing! :) The only good thing about this place: it's about 3 or 4 minutes away from the Old Golf Courtse and if you want to play there, you can walk over before 4 a.m. and stand in line. That's what my husband did. We had the so-called Junior suite which is no suite. It's just one hotel room with a bathroom. Very dim nightstand lights, but I always bring my own reading light. No air condition (and it was very warm in mid May when we stayed here for 2 nights). So keep the curtains closed during the day or the room heats up a lot! With close to 600 British pounds this was one of our most expensive hotel rooms in the UK. Another thing that we didn't like: it has individual hot and cold water taps in the sink, so you have to mix your water in a cup in order to brush your teeth. For the high price they could have offered a mix water tap and a bathroom without stairs plus brighter nightstand lights. The toilet seat was loose and moved to the right side. For almost 600 GBP this should get fixed immediately, shouldn't it? The kingsize bed was comfortable. The desk lamp did not work. At 9 a.m. I could barely see our laptop keyboard due to the lack of good lighting. Nice staff though. However, I would not book this hotel a second time. For breakfast (gorgeous view on the sea) I received one pancake only! :( For this price I would have expected 3 pancakes. This was one of the very few UK hotels where we did not leave the breakfast room feeling filled up. We had room # 209 at the end of the hallway and had to carry our luggage over several sets of stairs. This was the second worst hotel (only St. Olaf at Cruden Bay, Scotland, was worse). It was far away from the mal-functioning elevator and very quiet (the only positive thing that comes to my mind). Quiet neighbors as well as probably only golfers stay here and go to bed early in order to line up before 4 a.m. on the next morning. How people can get any sleep at night in the summer months in this hotel without air condition is just beyond me.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
I am so sorry your stay did not meet your expectations. It is always our aim to do our best to ensure our guests enjoy their stay so we are disappointed we did not come up to our usual standards during your visit. Kind regards Molly

"Disappointing Lunch - Chariot's Bar"

2
Butsy19, Scotland, United Kingdom 24/07/2019

We took advantage of the ITISON deal, 3 bar bites to share and a Gin and Tonic each Booked in advance (as requested on the itison voucher), arrived about 10 mins before our 'booked table', bar was virtually empty, a couple of people at the bar, drinking and chatting to the barman, although there were a few sitting outside. Loads of dirty glasses on the bar too and these were still on the bar when we left - would hate to see this place busy Approached to Barman as we couldn't see any tables 'reserved', however he continued to chat to the 2 people at the bar. He advised us just to sit anywhere, what would have happened if busy and no tables available. Barman was a chatty guy, had more time to chat then actually work / serve paying customers. We tried the St Andrews Oatmeal Stout, which was the worse pint of beer I have seen poured for a long time - no head and no real body to it - we had to ask the barman to put a head on it - however it went dead again after about 15 seconds - saying that every pint that was served had no head. Ordered our bar bites and G & T's G & T's were good, however disappointed with the bar bites,no chorizo in their chorizo mac n cheese and very small portion, only 3 breaded fish goujons and 5 honey & mustard glazed chipolatas - not a lot to SHARE. If there's a place for improvement, it's here, on all levels, especially with customer service, and staff. When we left, loads of empty glasses on the outside tables - not a welcoming site for others. Only plus point - Location. Will NOT be rushing back here - plenty other BETTER places

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry we did meet your expectations during your recent visit to Chariots. It is not the usual feedback we receive for our bar and it is disappointing that we failed to meet your standards on this occasion. regards Molly

"If there's a worse place to stay in St Andrews, I'd be shocked. STAY AWAY!!"

Rcdown78, Hobe Sound, Florida 20/07/2019

Our golf tour operator booked us here, and we have given him the advice of the Raven: Never More! We had dinner in the restaurant overlooking the Strand, and noticed that the window sill near our table was literally covered with dead black flies (is that appetizing to anyone?) The waiter "consoled" us by noting it was worse before they cleaned it up! Our meals were simply awful, either over cooked or undercooked, but in any case tasteless. The wine list wasnt even amateurish and ordering cocktails or drinks was like talking in a foreign language. I had to vacate my hotel room because of an infestation of black flies, but had to argue with the desk clerk to do so. It was all surreal. What is the problem? It is clearly this: whoever owns the place underinvests in plant and people and training because of the location (near the first tee of the Old Course). That is an INCREDIBLY cynical business model, and it shows no respect for the customer. I will say there is a desk clerk named Esme (I think that is her name), and she was a true light of hospitality and service among the darkness of the pit, that is Scores, as was a waiter/desk clerk. These two were thoroughly embarrassed about everything...and I could tell it was not the first time. Avoid this place until the owner invests. Meanwhile, let it continue to rot!!! PS- Did I mention that when I finally got my room moved because of the fly infestation, housekeeping failed to clean my room over the next two days??? Go to the DuVin or anywhere else.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Sometimes when I read reviews I am amazed at the different perceptions people have of the same hotel. This is not just regarding The Scores but any hotel that I have visited personally, you read the review and wonder if they are talking about the same place. There were flies in the room, it happens when windows are left open and we dealt with them quickly. I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay , our team is committed to being friendly and approachable so are disappointed they failed to meet your standards during your visit. regards Molly

"A bit old fashioned, but lovely nonetheless"

5
User 20/07/2019

We're not golfers, but the location is certainly perfect for those who are. What we loved is the charm of the older facility and the expansive rooms. We had a family suite which had two separate bedrooms, each with a sink, one full bathroom and one separate WC. In addition to being practically atop the golf course, the hotel is also right on the water. The hotel was also fabulously accommodating with laundry, sending out two bags worth (it was a long trip) for approx. $25USD. St. Andrews itself is rather small. So, even though we were located by golf course, the shops and restaurants were only a few blocks away. If you're looking for a shiny, new hotel, this is not it; however, if you are looking for charm, comfort and good service, look no further.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many, many thanks for your lovely review. We appreciate that you recognise that our hotel is comprised of two Victorian houses which have their own unique charm and with it their own idiosyncrasies. So glad you enjoyed your stay and St Andrews and would love to meet you again in the future kind regards Molly

"Excellent food and service"

Angela H, Redditch, United Kingdom 20/07/2019

We had a family get together, 25 of us on Sunday 14th July 2019. A big party, we tried a few local restaurants and no one could accommodate our group. We went to the hotel for drinks, explained our situation and they moved us upstairs to a private room with stunning sea views and set up a large table for us. The food was perfect and despite the numbers all meals came st once. It was amazing, they had no prior notice but you would never have known. The Manager made it happen and all staff were so friendly, helpful and made us so welcome. The food was excellent as was the choice on the menu. Do not miss an opportunity to visit you wont be disappointed. Thanks to everyone for making this a special occasion and looking after us so well.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
We were delighted you chose to spend time with us after such an important family occasion. It was an honour to be involved in your family reflections. I have passed your lovely comments to the team, in particular our chef, Andrew and Duty Manager Kevin, who were on duty that evening. It is always nice for our team to receive such a positive review and they were pleased your day went well. look forward to seeing you again soon kind regards Molly

"Golf Trip"

flytmaster, Ypsilanti, Michigan 16/07/2019

The Location is absolutely fabulous, sitting at the breakfast table and seeing the St Andrews club house outside about a short sand wedge away, and right there to the left is the First Tee, and the 18th Hole, Amazing sight! The personnel were all terrific and very helpful during our stay, and became very apologetic every day as during the 8 night stay the elevator broke, so for 5 long days it did not work, as new parts must come in from Germany. We climbed the stairs with a smile, it was cumbersome but things happens and an elevator out for such a long time is probably very rare. A super location where everything is within walking distance to anything you need to do while in St Andrews! I would love to return again to the same location.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for taking the time to send such a lovely review. It is always a delight for the team to receive thanks and they appreciate it when a guest takes a few moments to mention their service. The lift was a problem we could have done without but had no control over. As I have mentioned in other reviews it is serviced monthly but on this occasion it needed a new circuit board which as you rightly say had to come from Germany. It was inconvenient and I do apologise for the long walks up the stairs! We would love to see you again in the future and look forward to your return kind regards Molly

"Great Location not matched by hotel"

2
Mike1412, Durham, United Kingdom 13/07/2019

My wife and I stayed here recently whilst in St Andrews on a golfing holiday. The hotel location is superb - a stones throw away from the Old Course and an easy walk into the centre of the town. The hotel, however, is “tired” to say the least. Despite switching off the heating our room was very hot and when we tried to open the window it wouldn't stay open - in the end, we had to wedge it open with the courtesy shoe clean box! The en-suite was ok, although the plastic toilet seat was too small for the toilet! Breakfast was alright - nothing special - but the service was amateurish. If Best Western were to invest in the hotel, bring it up to date and train the staff, the hotel could be really good. As it is, there are far better hotels available in the area at a similar price

"Lunch in the bar"

User 11/07/2019

There Wednesday 10 July just after one pm with daughter and 3 grandchildren. Bar empty on arrival as it has been on the last 2 occasions we have visited. Met by a very rude bar maid. I think we interrupted her experience on the mobile phone. She could hardly tear herself away from it. First comment move your buggie even though we were the only ones in. No please of thank you. Do you want lunch you will have to go upstairs, we said no bar food fine we have been before. Waited an age for menus. Proceeded to order your can't order chips with each meal they are separate, I will give you 3 lots of chips. Table sticky had not been cleaned properly. Had to wait and age for bill to appear. Paid at the bar or we would still be there, still on mobile, huge sigh because we wanted to pay. I gave a 1 pound tip because I would feel bad not tipping took it promptly that was the fastest she had moved all lunch time. No thank-you given just grab it why don't you. Will not be back. Bill was a.most £38 daylight robbery in view of the service we had received. Did not enjoy felt we were a burden interuppting her online time. Outside as we left was talking to tourist wanting to order drink moaning about the weather. It was a lovely day.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
What can I say? I am so sorry. This is not the experience we want our guests to have and it is not usually the service our staff deliver. I can only apologise for the failure of our staff member on this occasion to be friendly and approachable. I do hope you visit us again regards Molly

"Great people, superb location, fabulous stay"

5
BarryDowns, Toronto, Canada 21/06/2019

Located about a sand wedge away from the Old Course, but the main attraction is the friendly, helpful staff. Everyone was great but "Morgan" on the front desk was superb. He went the extra step constantly and even helped us plan the continuation of our trip (where to go/where to stay/what to see). He was fabulous as was Molly the Manager, her husband Hamish, and in fact absolutely everyone we interacted with. The breakfast was excellent (especially porridge with a shot of whisky). Everything was great.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Hello We really enjoyed having you stay, it's always great when we have the chance to meet someone as friendly and warm as yourself. I often think there should be a guest review page - if there was one then you would definitely score top marks with us! Hope to see you again soon and many thanks for your kind review, Morgan passes his good wishes on. kind regards Molly

Absolutely wonderful time coming down from Edinburgh for a high tea. Beautiful view, and the food was cooked to perfection (we had the scampi option). Lovely staff, in particular two young waitresses (Jen, and an Irish girl whose name we didn't catch). We are already planning our return!

User 10/06/2019

A great location in St Andrews and a breakfast room with one of the best views in Scotland. The wifi was random but I think we were just unlucky on the day.The main bar area could benefit from some attention but everything else about the hotel was lovely, in particular the staff. I would definitely go back.

"A1 location for Old Course and Town!"

5
evelyninhouston, Houston 19/05/2019

Its literally a 9 iron from the Old Course first tee and a 2 minute walk into Town, and many of its rooms are sea facing. Nothing not to like about the rooms. Breakfast not great and a hilarious German accent female's voice in the elevator! Free parking at rear of property. Have stayed here a number of times and its my "go to" St Andrews hotel when playing golf there.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Evelyn Many thanks for your lovely review and your kind comments. We have many guests who return again and again and we love it! Look forward to seeing you on your next trip kind regards Molly

"Anniversary stay"

3
User 30/04/2019

The only redeeming feature of this hotel is the location. It is on a stunning site adjacent to the Old Course and minutes from all the amenities of the town. Sadly the traditional features are just a very run down hotel that needs renovated!!

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review, as you would expect I disagree with most of it but appreciate you taking the time . regards Molly

"if you are not here for golf"

3
Stillholidaying, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 28/04/2019

The views from the hotel cant be argued with and its location is ideal for those visiting the home of golf, however if you are here for a break with friends in terms of value for money and experience there are other hotels or B&Bs in St Andrews which will provide a much better experience for the money. Staff were not entirely hospitable from the outset and we felt we were putting them out by asking if we could leave our bags somewhere safe as we had arrived an hour before check in (the bags were eventually left next to the stairs and no one checked with us when we picked them up). The rooms we had were tired and small on the third floor and ours smelled of what i can only describe as cheap toilet spray which lingered for the stay. The bed was small and uncomfortable the toilet cistern took an age to fill and was very noisy during the night and the shower was nothing more than a trickle. Very tired rooms. The breakfast was dissapointing having to ask for bread for toast, bowls for cereal and then after 10 mins we had to ask for tea and coffee. To top it off the scottish breakfast tasted like it had been microwaved . But seemingly we were lucky to even get breakfast as the day before had been a disaster.... The hotel needs major investment but you get the impression that the attitude from the management team is "why bother when you have a captive audience willing to pay for the location"

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry you were disappointed during your stay, you don't appear to have raised any of the issues mentioned with our team during your stay which meant we could not try to address any problems. regards Molly

"Excellent Location"

5
User 28/04/2019

The Scores is literally across the street from the first tee of the Old Course at St Andrews. The rooms are nice and a little quaint. The location is such that there is no noise when sleeping. Also the location is great for exploring the rest of St Andrews.

"Great location"

5
ClaudG55, Dalrymple, United Kingdom 24/04/2019

We recently stayed here for 2 nights & can't fault the actual hotel in anyway. We had a great room overlooking the sea & golf course. It was a good size & clean. Plenty of toiletries. All staff were very pleasant. There is a lovely bar downstairs with a great selection of local real ales, gins & whiskies. Breakfast was excellent but my only gripe was the meal on our first night. Starters were very good but the main courses were just average. I had a burger which I am sure was microwaved & also the chips were slightly under cooked. However, we would certainly return. Parking is a serious problem in St. Andrews but the hotel as a small car park at the rear which we managed to get into.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your kind review, we are always delighted when a guest has enjoyed their stay and more so when they plan to return! We have noted your comments re your burger and have passed them onto to the kitchen who are sorry they did not meet your expectations. Again, many thanks for your kind words, look forward to seeing you again soon Molly

"Nice hotel but very loud music from hotel bar at night"

3
Jenster2015, Toronto, Canada 22/04/2019

I stayed in a lovely large room that faced the back of the hotel, unfortunately this room was located directly above the hotel bar, which protruded out into the backyard, making the extremely loud music playing until 12:30am easily heard in my room even with the windows closed - and made sleeping impossible. I stayed there on a Friday night, so I'm not sure if every night is that loud, but it still unacceptable in my view to have such loud music in a place where people are trying to sleep. When I called the front reception just before midnight to ask how long the music would play, and also when I told the front desk in the morning – neither party seemed all that interested in my experience, which was disappointing. The hotel is nice overall, but I strongly suggest that if you want a good nights sleep, make sure your room does not face the back of the hotel.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review. I am disappointed to hear that you had a problem with loud music, we did have a function on that night which ended at 12.30. We do not have functions on every evening and the noise levels are usually supervised by our management team on duty and also the stewards we employ during functions. I apologise that this was not the case during your recent visit. We do hope you will visit us again in the near future regards Molly

"Lovely location and a warm welcome too"

We had a room with a seaview. The room and the hotel are traditional in style and immaculately clean. The bathroom was a good size too. Breakfast was excellent, with the kipper being a generous portion and well presented. The omelette was very filling. All the staff were very helpful. We would stay again.

I've always liked St. Andrews, and this hotel is in a great central location, with nice views of the beach. The staff are very friendly, and I would be a regular visitor here if they allowed dogs.... such a shame

Many thanks for your lovely review and for your kind comments about our team. I note your remarks about dogs but unfortunately it is not our policy to allow pets as we do have to consider our other guests who may dislike dogs or have allergies. I do hope we see you again. regards Molly

Allan M, Glasgow, United Kingdom 20/03/2019

The scores is old, quaint, clean and well staffed. People say that it is tired however, the antique furniture adds to the overall atmosphere. I didn't like the evening meal which was decidedly average but the breakfast more than made up for that. My only gripe? The wine list is also average and well overpriced

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Hello, many thanks for your review and for your appreciation that The Scores is situated in a Victorian building and the furnishings reflect the ambience of the hotel. We have taken note of your comments re the evening menu which is about to be changed, hopefully on your return visit you will welcome the changes. kind regards Molly

"Nice visit"

Gemini16, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 10/03/2019

I booked this hotel on an Itison deal for two couples and we drove from Edinburgh and Glasgow respectively. On arrival, we found limited and busy parking outside the hotel so it was good to be told of the small parking area behind the hotel. We checked in with no problems and went to our rooms. I found it strange that two couples who were friends and and who checked in together were placed on different floors and as it turned out in completely different types of rooms. Theirs - 205 - was very cramped and ours had much more space. We only found this on the first night when we visited their room. Signage to our room 307 was also not clear. The double bed could be bigger. We are used to king size bed at home and the bed was very small for us. In hindsight maybe we should have taken the offer of a twin room rather than a double and had a single each. On the positive side, all the staff were very helpful and cheerful, especially Sean who I think was one of the managers. He couldn't do enough for us. Brought us ice with wine, arranged for TVs to be put on to watch rugby etc. Just a generally nice young man. We had our first nights dinner in the hotel and all of our meals were very nice. Breakfast was buffet style for cereals, juice, toast, and if you wanted a hot breakfast, you ordered this with the waitress. Views from the dining room and bar areas were lovely. Our bedrooms faced the rear of the hotel. All in all, we had a very nice stay at the hotel and a great time in St Andrews.

"Great location, lovely view out to sea"

3
Vina S, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 09/03/2019

As per the title, this is a great location and we had lovely sea views. However let done by dinner, menu ok but my main of 1 chicken skewer with a small portion of rice was not worth £10.95 - it was the size of a starter. Plus very poor selection of toiletries especially for a chain like Best Western - they didn't even have a comb or ear plugs!!

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review. We have noted your comments regarding the portion sizes and apologise that your dinner did not meet your expectations. Our toiletries meet the Best Western requirements which do not request the individual hotels to stock ear plugs but if we receive requests for them in the future then we shall re - consider this. It is from constructive criticism that we can improve our service to our guests so again thank you for taking the time. regards Molly .

A comfortable room with a fantastic View across the Sands. The Room was large and well apportioned. Breakfast was fine next morning too. Room 200 certainly gives you a good view to remember of St Andrews and I think that we will certainly be back.

"A good memory in Scotland"

User 27/02/2019

Very good sites, Excellent view, good room. I've spent 17 days in this hotel, everyday I was astonised by the view I saw outside the door. I enjoyed the walk in the westsands, which is the first thing after my getting up and before the breakfast. As to the breakfast, the waitor and waitress there were extremely friendly and considerable; As a Chinese, I Love the bacon and sausage. Food species are very scottish. As I spent 17 days there, so sometimes I felt maybe they can improve the variety of the food species, LOL. T took bacon and sausages everyday. Though they are delicious , some cheaper food at times ran to my brain. So I want to recommend Italian noodles to be included in the breakfast. Both the western and estern people can accept noodles, and it will for sure cut the cost of the hotel compared with bacon and sausage. And, the delicious cookies offered every day. Very scottish, very delicious. By the way, thank the room-cleaning lady, who are very dedicated. As an alien, some of the things in the room are not that familiar to me. I may make things messed up because I don't know what the things are for. So maybe the hotel can put some tips on the things telling the aliens how to use it. And the beds are a little narrow , so I combined the two beds in my room together, LOL.

We enjoyed having you and your friends stay with us for such a long time. It was nice to get to know you and we hope you will return sometime soon. We have taken note of your comments re breakfast, it's always good to get some fresh ideas and chef will give your idea of noodles some thought, it may well be on the menu next time you return We're delighted to know that we are part of your fond memories of St Andrews, as you say you never get tired of the view of the West Sands, it's different every day kind regards Molly

"Great location, but not up to US standards"

2
B7789LPgaryh, Lexington, United States 25/02/2019

Great location with a great view of the Old Course and convenient free parking. Room and bathroom are large, but the room was way too hot (slept with an open window in February) and shower too cold (those two minute showers are quick). We should have complained to management sooner than at checkout, but it hadn't been a good check-in experience so we didn't think we'd be listened to.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
It is such a tricky thing to get right, rooms too hot, or rooms too cold, it varies from guest to guest and is a such an individual choice. All our rooms have thermostatic controls so you should have been able to control your room temperature via the radiator. If this was not the case then I apologise and wish you had told me or one of our team you were experiencing problems when we could have helped. I also apologise for your check in experience, first impressions are so important and I am disappointed that your first impression was not a positive one. I hope you pay us a visit again in the future and hope you had a safe trip home kind regards Molly

Friendly welcome ,and an amazing room.Character hotel with fabulous room overlooking the sea. Very clean and welcoming. Disappointed with breakfast though,a Scottish hotel that serves Instant Porridge at breakfast ! Need to tell chef to cut back on the vinegar with the poached eggs ,you could smell it before you tasted it . Would I return ,,,Im sure I would as I loved its character, views and friendly staff.

biglouoakenshield, Thorold, Canada 28/01/2019

I loved this hotel. Location to downtown and golfing were perfect. All staff were friendly and exceptional. Was here just last week and view was amazing. Wait staff Olivia went out her way to accommodate my wishes. They have their own parking in back which was really convenient too as parking is sparse when it's busy. Room was clean and quite. Will go back for sure.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review

User 27/01/2019

Stayed here for one night and it was a truly amazing little hotel to stay at. The sea views are EXCEPTIONAL (far better than what you get at the Fairmont) and the staff are just lovely. Decor might seem dated to some but I think it comes across as truly Scottish and welcoming - rather than the modern furniture you get in 95% of most hotels. An absolute delight to stay - will return for certain. Decent breakfast too.

Don't let the slightly dated hotel put you off going in. Our pre Xmas meal was faultless and the service was first class. The views over the west sands and Old Course are amazing. I recommend the mackerel starter and raspberry roulade for dessert. We will return.

"Don't arrive early:("

3
teacher018, Hiawassee, Georgia 30/11/2018

My husband and I arrived early for our stay at the Scores, desk staff was on the phone and not welcoming at all. He told us to place our bags by the stairs and come back at check-in time .... not very accommodating for tired, overseas travelers. Would I stay at the Scores again? No .... no AC, windows must stay open - no screens and the sea gulls are so loud, one cannot sleep.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I apologise that our receptionist was not more accommodating , however , although we would love to give everyone an early check in, it is not possible. Our previous guests have until 11am to check out and then the room has to be cleaned so 2pm check out is the time during our busy periods. I think your stay was in August, we did have a glorious summer and we do supply fans in every room if you require them ,they are also available from reception. The seagulls I am afraid we can do nothing about, they are a protected species in the UK and as we are right on the coast are permanent residents of St Andrews. I am sorry your stay did not meet your expectations and hope you do choose to return in the future. regards Molly

We recently stayed at the Scores Hotel when dropping off my daughter for her first year at university. We were very tired after a long and delayed flight, and requested to check in early. The receptionist (small and blonde, sorry didn't catch her name) was ever so friendly and helpful- she assured us this was no problem and checked us in, then knocked on our door a few minutes later to offer an upgrade to a lovely large room with a sea view, after noticing the nicer room was vacant. After telling her of our daughter's apprehension, she told us that she too was a student, and offered some tips for settling into university life. She even printed off timetables for some try out sessions for various sports and societies after we asked for recommendations. Breakfast was also a pleasurable experience, and all waiting staff were also very polite and helpful. We will definitely be back next year!

"Aging Hotel in a Great Location"

3
DaveMom, Brussels, Belgium 03/11/2018

This hotel is in dire need of a facelift. Peeling wallpaper, old bathrooms, bulbs burned out in old light fixtures. Location is ideal. Service is okay - breakfast is downright awful. This clearly was once a grand hotel, but it's time to upgrade the old facilities. We were disappointed.

"Comfortable room. Good food. Great location."

4
Michael G, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 31/10/2018

Given the constraints of the buildings the Scores works hard to give customers a good experience. If you are lucky enough to get a room at the front, the views over the West Sands are spectacular. We had a room at the back which had little in the way of a view but had plenty of light and did get the sun in the afternoon! The room was spacious, clean and the bed was very comfortable. The bathroom had a powerful shower but the bath was a little cramped. The dining room, Champions Grill, must have one of the best views in St Andrews over the West Sands and the Old Course. Great at breakfast which was very good...I particularly recommend the porridge with honey. The pancakes and bacon was very popular with the Americans who were staying there.. Over the course of our stay we had lunch and dinner and the food was wholesome and well-cooked. Service was friendly both in the dining rooms and at Reception. We thought there was a welcoming atmosphere to the place. The hotel is nicely situated for exploring both the beach and the town...nothing is really more than twenty minutes away! We would definitely stay here again. Be prepared for the very snug lift!

hotel was clean and room had everything you would expect. Local was perfect with some rooms having a great view over St Andrews Bay. Unfortunately our room was at the back but had a great view of the car park !! nothing much to fault but there was no atmosphere about the place. We arrived back at about 10.30 on a saturday night and the bar was shut !!

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Paul many thanks for your review. We have taken note of your comments, unfortunately we cannot offer sea views to all our guests , if you do want this option there is an additional surcharge but it is of course subject to availability. As guests you would have been more than welcome to enjoy a drink in our Scorecards Bar, I apologise if this was not made known to you. We hope you decide to stay with us again, if booking in the future please get in touch with the hotel directly and request a sea view, kind regards Molly

"Lovely view, good sized room, clean with all features expected"

4
Themissingcase, Clydebank, United Kingdom 17/10/2018

We, apparently luckily, were able to park straight across from the hotel. Short walk to check-in and lovely welcome, given our room key and traveled in the lift (what accent is it ?). Room was facing the Royal&Ancient and the sands. Beautiful view. Room was large with plenty of space, I liked the 2 sitting chairs for us to watch the world go by. Beds were comfy and shower powerful. So clean refreshed and headed for breakfast. That we found had good variety, staff seemed a bit flummoxed when people ask for a table for 2 and they only have a table for 4. But I”d have the breakfast again, delicious. Checking out was painless and pleasant. Will book here again.

"Great location, front desk help needs training"

3
parislover_8, Orlando, Florida 10/10/2018

They are resting on their great location which is a stone's throw from the Old Course. Front desk help needs training in hospitality although they were not unpleasant. Breakfast was mediocre at best. Our room was fine with the exception that there were no blinds and you could not close the drapes so no sleeping in here. This hotel could be something special if it were renovated and the staff was friendlier.

"Convenient Location, Excellent View"

3
HVRoadWarrior, United States 08/10/2018

The best parts of our one-night stay are that the Scores Hotel is conveniently located near the major sites and attractions and our junior suite on the second floor had a large bay window that offered an excellent view of the Old Course, West Sands, and the North Sea. Although the reception staff and manager were pleasant and welcoming, the Hotel, itself, is a bit worn and tired and in need of a make-over. Our room, while spotless, was a bit tight for a junior suite (perhaps because of the two double beds, instead of the king bed that we requested) and lacked the comfort level that I had anticipated. Breakfast was adequate, but unmemorable, and service was polite, but somewhat indifferent. The Wi-Fi was decent in our room and throughout the property.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Hello We appreciate you taking the time and reviewing our hotel. I am pleased to read you found our staff welcoming, it is our aim to ensure our guests feel at home. "Great for golfers"

2
User 02/10/2018

You are next to golf. The hotel itself needs to be renovated desperately. There is room for one with a bag in the elevator. There are no electronic updates so you will need adapters. The room is ridiculously small - one double bed. There is an old hot water heater and you can't open the window without propping books under it to keep it open. The resin for the / star rating is it us convenient to walk to golf, the cathedral, ruins, and aquarium. As for breakfast, it's limited in choices. Wait staff is friendly.

"Nothing special"

3
User 23/09/2018

Hotel is close to Old course, directly in the heart. Staff was friendly. Rooms are clean, but very cold. Breakfast was miserable. For a golfers (with golf bags) is hotel unpractical - lot of stairs everywhere. Price for accomodation is overrate. Generally - lower average.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for taking the time to send your review. I wish we had spoken during your visit because many of your comments were easily fixed if we had been made aware of a problem. Each room has thermostatically controlled radiators which we would have been only too happy to adjust to your requirements. , we have a large golf bag store which most of our golfing guests use, it has easy access to the lift and the lower ground floor entrance, my apologies if our reception staff did not make you aware of this facility. I am sorry your visit did not meet your expectations, we do try to ensure that our guests enjoy their stay and are disappointed that we did not achieve this on this occasion. kind regards Molly

"Lunch here again. Quality food again. This restaurant needs to Advertise Better."

3
Bravehearted, Markinch, Fife 15/08/2018

A small sign on the pavement outside the hotel advertised the set price two or three course lunch. Not bold enough to attract the many tourists walking up from the Old Course Clubhouse. The result a nearly empty restaurant with lovely views out to the West Sands, in St Andrews. Always quality food served here so the management are missing out on passing trade. Service was a bit slow, but that might be down to staff who are needing the buzz of more customers, instead of standing around waiting for business.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Bravehearted Nice to hear from you again. You may be correct in what you say about advertising - we took your earlier advice and now have our restaurant on as separate Trip Advisor site by the way, we would welcome more reviews there so please feel free to visit it - but we are in a lovely conservation area which would be marred by lots of unsightly billboards. We feel two is enough and in keeping with the plans of the local administrators who are trying to reduce A2 posters outside every door in St Andrews. We have enjoyed a very busy season although more business is always welcome and the restaurant is beginning to gain from the fact we have an established kitchen producing nice quality food. Please make yourself known at your next visit, we would love to meet you personally regards Molly

"Some excellent; some poor"

3
Gerard S, Fairport, NY USA 04/08/2018

First, the location: couldn't be better! Amenities: quite good. Our (golf buddy and me) room was spacious, comfortable with a fine view of the water and of the links. Very good breakfast. dinner in the restaurant was fine; not creative but okay. Service: poor. The bathroom fan did not run, We reported that defect just after checking in for a four night stay. When we checked out it still did not work. Then the bath light switch stopped working, but I fixed that myself. Now here's the big issue, still not resolved eight days after checking out. We checked out on a Friday to go to Edinburgh. When I checked in to the Edinburgh hotel I discovered to my horror that I had forgotten to clear the closet/wardrobe of shirts and trousers. I called the hotel, asked if my clothes had been retrieved (not) and asked that they be collected and readied for mailing to me. I further asked that I receive a confirming email . No email. After my return to the US I waited a few more days with no word from the hotel, then called reception. Apparently my clothes were still in the room, since I was then assured that they would be collected by housekeeping the next morning! It is now several more days later and I've still heard nothing. I may never see those clothes again. Summary: excellent location; nice room; very good breakfast; okay dinner; nice bar; but housekeeping, maintenance, reception, responsiveness in need of vast improvement.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review. Having discussed this with reception and housekeeping we have located your clothes and they will be posted to the address provided by yourself on Monday. I understand that reception were in contact with you, although one message was sent to the wrong e mail address which we apologise for, the previous correspondence between yourself and the hotel was to obtain descriptions of the missing clothing which you kindly sent. As you will appreciate many, many items are left behind by guests and we regularly forward items as soon as possible. I apologise if the items were not sent as promptly as you would have wished. We trust you enjoyed your visit to St Andrews. kind regards Molly

"A view to die for!"

User 30/07/2018

Brought a family group and had a variety of rooms - two that overlooked the beach, one family room that was huge and a twin - not so good as it overlooked the back roof. Overall we were very happy as the windows opened and there were fans in the rooms to help cool us off. It was very warm!! The beds were comfortable and the breakfast was very good - very accommodating staff. One afternoon we stayed in the pub for hours and ended up having dinner upstairs in the restaurant - all delicious and comfortable. This is a traditional style hotel, very homey with a view of the sands and the Royal and Ancient - we loved it! They do have an elevator but some rooms are only accessible up some stairs. Parking is a challenge as they have a small lot behind the hotel - we just parked along the street in front. Walking distance to the center of town.

Many thanks for your lovely review. It was a pleasure having you and your family stay with us and we are delighted that you enjoyed the hotel and St Andrews. Your trip sounds relaxed and comfortable and we are so pleased you felt able to relax with your family at the hotel, our staff do aim to be as friendly and unobtrusive as possible , sounds like they got it just right. Meh. Our room was large and the bed comfy but there was no cross ventilation so we had to sleep with the windows open and it was quite loud til the pubs closed. The hotel could use some refurbishment and the staff was not overly hospitable. After a long day of traveling, we came down to have dinner in the hotel restaurant and we were warned that their kitchen was quite slow and perhaps we would do better to go out to eat. Hmm. The location was nice but there are other hotels equally situated. Try one of them.

Many thanks for taking the time to send a review. We are disappointed not to have met your expectations during your stay, the weather has been glorious recently and nights are warm. Air conditioning is not something we normally have to consider and we do provide fans in every room to try and help alleviate the heat. Our staff are often praised for their friendliness , I apologise that this was not the case during your stay and the suggestion that you go out to eat should definitely not have been mooted. Your comments have been noted and taken on board to avoid a repetition of anything similar in the future. kind regards Molly

I was here on business for one night. What a lovely hotel, the staff couldn't do enough for me, every one I encountered was so pleasant it was a joy. Food was very good and the bed was the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in! If this hotel had a/c it would have Benn my No 1 of all time. However inside the wardrobe was a large fan, a heater, ion and hairdryer, everything I could possibly need. I will certainly stay again and highly recommend.

"Dirty room and less than hospitable reception staff"

1
206TravelJunkie, Seattle, Washington 03/07/2018

Do not stay here. Location is great but the cleanliness is not and the staff are less than hospitable. Better hotels are on the same block. Go somewhere else if you want a clean toilet and helpful staff. Below is the review I wrote to the hotel: We had multiple bad experiences with this hotel. For the cost of the hotel, we expected much more. I definitely did not expect to clean a toilet for the cost of 230 pounds a night. The start of the bad experience happened as we first walked up to reception. We arrived at 1:45. The three people that were at the front desk barely made eye contact when we walked up. When we asked if we could check in, they said check is was 2:00 but they would see if we could get a room early. They told us to go to the lounge and they would be right with us. I told them if it would take a while that we could go shopping and come back. They said the room should be ready soon and to go wait. At 2:40 (after wondering if they had looked in a different lounge), I went back and checked with reception. They said that the room would be ready in 5 minutes and they would come get us. At 3:10 I went back again to check and the woman at the desk handed we a room key (no greeting or explanation of the hotel, nothing). The coup de gras of this experience was what happened next. Upon entering the room I had to use the bathroom and was immediately greeted by a very dirty toilet. The best way to describe the filth is to imagine brown spatter paint throughout the inside or that the toilet bowl was the night sky littered with brown stars. I called down to let them know and ask for someone to come clean it. Two tries on the phone and no one picked up. I ended up cleaning the toilet. My husband and I then went shopping and when we returned two hours later, my husband called down to see if we could get ice brought up. This time a staff member answered the phone. We then heard a familiar promise of someone being up shortly. 45 minutes later my husband walked down to the lounge and got a bucket of ice. We have traveled all over the world and have stayed in everything from one to five star hotels. This is only time in over 20 years of traveling that I have written a poor review. I definitely do not like to clean toilets when I am at home and I certainly do not prefer to do it when I pay 230 pounds a night. I have two groups of people I know who will be traveling to St. Andrews that I will tell to steer clear. I am also copying and pasting this review on every site I can find so that another travel does not waste their money.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Mrs Crawley I am so disappointed to read of the problems you experienced during your stay. We obviously got quite a few things wrong which is not our normal standard of service. We currently have new members on our reception team but our experienced member of staff undertaking the training should have ensured that you were kept informed of the length of time before we could complete check in for you. There is no excuse for the dirty room and I sincerely apologise for that, we have discussed the issues you raise which will be rectified by increased training and more attention to customer satisfaction. I am sorry your visit with us was marred by issues that we should have ensured did not occur , every member of our team knows the standards expected but inexperience and human error led to problems that I as the manager accept full responsibility for. Again please accept my sincere apologies regards Molly

"A characteristic hotel with fines views of links and sea"

4
Lungipiedi, Harrogate, United Kingdom 25/06/2018

This is an auld hotel but very spacious. The style is out of last century: heavy tartans and gloomy rooms. The location is spot on nearest the old course and the old club and the sea shore. The bathrooms could do with refurbishment. The staff are a delight: unfailingly helpful and cheerful. The breakfast was abundant. For golfers this must be the location nearest to heaven.

"top quality old fashioned hotel . great service ."

"Afternoon Tea"

1
User 28/05/2018

Booked a table for 3 as a birthday treat for my friend. When we arrived it took nearly 20 minutes for the menu to arrive. My friend, a vegetarian asked for a veggie version. When it arrived the veggie option was among the meat option and the fruit was on the paté. The bread was stale and the cakes dry. Said something to the duty manager who refunded my friends meal, but I was made to feel very awkward. The waiter was very polite and accommodating so no fault on his part. Hopefully this was an isolated incident.

"Not bad - but a little tired (the rooms)"

3
Zsaraman, Farnborough 26/05/2018

The LCD tv now looks dated and was very dark (no ability to adjust), the room was fine except the bathroom was a little tired and could do with a make over, not sure about the black Mold and the detached bath plug.Fine if you get a sea view but we overlooked the kitchen and was a little noisy at times. What made me only give the hotel 3 (Average) was breakfast, having sat down the confusion between staff over what was available from the buffet and order was amazing. A new member of staff was clearly struggling but the supervisor - wasn't doing her job and only confused us all. I really do believe that Premier Inn does a better job and Scores should go back to basics and remember that their customers are who pay the money they need to continue.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your candid comments, it is only from positive criticism that we can rectify any issues and improve staff training where needed. I am sorry we failed to meet our usual standards and we will use your review to address the issues mentioned. kind regards Molly

"Very disappointing"

1
User 26/05/2018

Given room 101 which looks onto a wall, loo did not work and room not properly cleaned. Total rip off. And apparently this has been the case for years of this hotel in a wonderful location Very very disappointing

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
We would love to give everyone a room with a view of the West Sands but architecture doesn't allow this. Our sea view rooms are available for a surcharge and it is best to book directly with the hotel to ascertain if a sea view room is available. Our sincere apologies that your stay did not meet your expectations. regards Molly

"Long weekend stay"

Hammi2565, Glasgow Uk 21/05/2018

This hotel is in a prime location in St Andrews. 3*'s it is, and frankly it could perhaps merit 4! Staff were friendly, and very helpful. Breakfast was a buffet, with additional options available. These however took some time. We actually felt that the two waitresses (sorry, one old and one young), struggled to keep up. The young girl was run off her feet, and by the end of breakfast was beginning to break out in a sweat. The older lady, who was delightful, should perhaps be offered lighted duties, and allow the younger generation to take the load. I understand this may be hurtful, but it is meant as a genuine review. The duty manager was very helpful, and his addition (on our second morning) made all the difference to table service. We had a suite, which was frankly very nice. A large room, which even had a wee kitchen. Shame though, that there is little or no view. Minus point - No Safe in the room. Yes there is an option of locking valuables in the office safe, but that is inconvenient. It would not cost the hotel much to upgrade this, as I am sure travellers would appreciate the added security. All in all really quite good, as the other hotels in the area are frankly more expensive. A couple of tweaks and this hotel could be very good.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your positive review. Constructive comments are how we improve our service and we have taken note of your thoughts regarding breakfast. If you return, and we hope you do, please contact me directly and we will try to accommodate you with a sea view room, they are obviously highly sought after but we will do our very best, though I must say I like our Seaton Suite rooms, they are large, comfortable rooms and if guests are staying for a longer period the kitchens can come in very handy. We will consider the installation of room safes although it is not in the immediate plans. Again thank you for taking the time to send us your thoughts, it is appreciated and we hope to see you again soon regards Molly

"High Tea - Amazing value."

5
KarenRichardson, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 20/05/2018

I was looking for High Tea for Mum's birthday, been ages since we had one and not many places seem to do this now. Scott at The Scores assured me they could cater for this and so along we went. Four of us, seated at a huge table with a splendid view out over St Andrews Bay on a gloriously sunny day. Toast was offered and brought, and then the menu was recited to us by the manager. Three fish and chips, one with extra veg, one gammon and boiled potatoes. They coped well with the various requests for extra "this" or no "that". Food was cooked and served well and the portions were large. Afterwards we were amazed to be presented with a plate each, containing two scones, a flapjack and two cakes. In the middle of the table was placed a tray with two huge bowls of whipped cream (real stuff, none of yer fake squirty stuff here) and another of jam, along with pots of tea and coffee. We stuffed ourselves but couldn't manage to finish it, so they thoughtfully packed up what was left for us to take away. The bill was the most amazing part of this, under £60 for four excellent meals. A fabulously good value for money meal, the staff were superb and couldn't do enough for us. Very glad we chose the Best Western Scores Hotel.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your lovely review. We are delighted that you all enjoyed your mum's tea and appreciate all the kind comments which we have passed on to our kitchen and front of house team. Look forward to seeing you again soon kind regards Molly

"Disappointed"

3
janisScotland, Scotland 13/05/2018

As a treat I booked a suite for an overnight stay a couple of weeks ago and was disappointed with the room as it was on the lower ground floor. Instead of looking out over the golf course and beach we had a view of a wall. So not worth paying extra for a suite unless you ask for a sea view. Also the bed sheet had a tear! Food was ok. Good central location and pleasant staff.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Hello This is the third review stating the same information that I have replied to. As I mentioned in the other two replies I sincerely apologise for the torn sheet, it has been discussed with our hpusekeeping team and pointed out to our laundry supplier that this is unacceptable. kind regards Molly

"Buddies Golf Trip"

4
YanniFoundaki, Washington DC, District of Columbia 07/05/2018

The American perspective of The Best Western chain isn't very high. However this property brome the mold and offered us a perfect lodging option for our Bucket-List trip to St Andrews. The location to the Old Course, Starter's Pavilion, golf shops, Dunvegan Pub and Market Street made this a no-brainer. Spectacular location, views and found the staff to be exceptionally warm and friendly. The Jr Suite rooms (104/106) we're enormous with couches and sitting areas. Beds were perfectly fine and had no issues. The only issue I found was with the breakfast/food offering. Continental fruit, muffins and juice such are fine. I found the hot items (eggs, bacon, sausage) to be unsatisfactory. No big deal, I would just skip over to the Starters Pavilion for coffee and a breakfast sandwich and watch the morning groups go off the 1st tee of Old Course! Not a bad way to spend your morning :) I didn't book this hotel for a culinary tour of Scotland. I booked for the AMAZING location and this is exactly what we got. No reason for us to stay anywhere else in the future. WONDERFUL STAY!

Guy E, Ealing, London 04/05/2018

When I arrived in St Andrews on Friday 27th April for a week of golf I realised, to my horror, that I'd got my dates mixed up and did not have a room for the night. It was about 9 o'clock in the evening and the usual hotel search sites were only coming up with VERY expensive options. Then came Scott at The Scores hotel to the rescue. He recognised I was in a spot and gave me their last room (a suite) at a reduced rate (I was on my own). Scott was brilliant (Best Western management, pls note!) and a credit to the company. Thank you so much. However, I hate to look a gift horse in the mouth, but had I of paid full rate for my room, I would not have been impressed. The room, whilst warm and dry, was very tired and on closer inspection, dirty. I'm going to leave it there because I was helped out of a spot, but I do think this could be a brilliant hotel and hope to visit again.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review. We do appreciate guests taking the time to leave their opinion and it is used as an improvement tool by the hotel. I am glad we had the availability that evening and were able to help. Scott is a valued member of our team and we have passed your positive comments onto him. Hopefully we shall see you again in the future kind regards Molly

"Definite no no"

2
CardiffBeaver, Cardiff 25/04/2018

I recently visited the Scores Hotel with a party of 50 people for an afternoon tea which had been booked many months ago. When we arrived we were kept corralled in a small reception area before going into a very bland room . Two waitresses then proceeded to rush around laying the the 5 tables of 10 , plates first then saucers then cups and so on. Eventually metal pots of tea and coffee arrived. One of each. We were now down to 1 waitress. The poor girl was rushed off her feet. Then came a small pot of sugar and jug of milk. Then a cake stand with 20 scones and a small pot of cream and jam. The poor waitress was running from one table to another refilling the jam, cream, milk and coffee. It was a shambles. We all felt sorry for the waitress and felt that our booking had probably been forgotten. For a hotel in an iconic area we had expected better service.

"Double bogey !"

Frank R, County Dublin, Ireland 17/04/2018

Oh dear This hotel is in a prime location for accessing the Old Course and the other courses in St Andrews but apparently the management thinks this means they don't have to worrry about basic customer service. The first night I discovered my bed had a lumpy row of springs which made my nights sleep quite uncomfortable. I won't bore you with the details but it took four conversations with 5 different staff before I begrudgingly got a new mattress. Add to that a mediocre breakfast at £10 extra and being overcharged on the bill and I will be looking for alternative accommodation the next time. The place could do with a facelift but more than anything the staff need to learn the meaning of customer service. Answers such as 'nobody else has complained' just don't cut the mustard.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Mr Reynolds I have already replied to your review on another review site but will again give my apologies for the problems you encountered with the mattress. At no time were you begrudgingly supplied with a new mattress. Sometimes logistics means we are unable to produce a new mattress straight away and we resolved your issues as soon as we were able to. You were offered another room until we could solve the issue but I understand you chose not to accept this. For £10 our guests receive a full cooked breakfast plus a choice of cereals, toasts, fruit, yoghurts, toast, croissant, cheeses, cold meats, tea and coffee. Re the overcharge if you could provide me with details as our staff have no record of it being mentioned on departure, I will of course look into this straight away. I am sorry to hear you felt our staff did not deal with your queries correctly, most reviews are complimentary about the caring attitude of the staff and it is disappointing they did not meet their usual standards during your stay. Again my apologies for failing to ensure you had an enjoyable stay with us, it is always our intention that our guests leave happy and will hopefully return in the future kind regards Molly.

"Worst time ever"

sarahD2218OI, Port Glasgow, United Kingdom 17/04/2018

Me and my wife stayed at your hotel and had breakfast this morning we were really looking forward to it too. It was the worst experience ever they was three staff members on and they didnt make us feel welcome and wasn't polite either, also the breakfast was not the best I think extra training is needed. My wife asked for coffee and toast and it took so long to wait, it was a shame about our stay, the rooms was freezing and didn't feel welcome at all.

"Afternoon coffee"

3
patnken, fife 16/04/2018

I write this not to criticise waitress but to ask that the management actually train the waitress, we had coffee this afternoon and it was obvious to us that the poor girl had no idea how to make coffee, we asked for 2 cappuccino and 2. Latte, the Cappuccino had very little foam ( not enough to cover the top of the cup),1 latte was cold and it took an age to serve the coffees. We did not let this spoil our afternoon in the very nice surroundings of the hotel. Please make sure this waitress has some help, she seemed a very pleasant girl who had been abandoned

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for taking the time to send your review. Our waitress that day is a recent member of staff who is doing very well and is, importantly, following the rest of our team with a friendly and welcoming manner. I take your points re the coffee, there was a change of shift pattern to allow her to learn the different requirements from morning to afternoon and it would appear that the duty manager on duty has perhaps expected too much too soon. I apologise for any inconvenience you experienced and can reassure you that training and retaining staff is a main priority for the company. kind regards Molly

"Wonderful hotel, great location!"

User 16/04/2018

My husband and I stayed at this hotel during our winter getaway to Scotland. Not only did we love St. Andrews, but this hotel was perfect for us. The room was on the smaller side, but that is typical in Europe, and still had plenty of closet and bathroom space. It was very clean, warm, and the location was perfect. We had a view of the sea and the Old Golf Course! It was just two streets over from the heart of the action, so it was a short walk to the main shopping and restaurants. It was very close to most of the golf related activities, as well as just down the street from the castle and cathedral. Overall we loved our stay here. The stay were helpful and friendly, and we felt very comfortable in this hotel. Anytime we come back to St. Andrews we will be staying here again!

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many, many thanks for your lovely review and for the intention to come back and visit us again in the future. We look forward to seeing you both again soon. Although the location is wonderful - we keep saying it but it is true, you can never get tired of that view! - I am pleased you took the time to mention our team. The company is very proud of its staff and for guests to take the time to thank them is much appreciated. Please contact the hotel directly when you make your next booking, our reception team will try to ensure you get your favourite room. See you again soon! kind regards Molly

"Gordon Ramsey needs to help the scores hotel kitchen!!!"

1
GordonKClee, Singapore, Singapore 10/04/2018

Worst dinner experience ever!!! Rock hard steaks served to a private room of group16! Instead of replacing the dinner plate, they chose to replace with 3 bottles of cheap £3.99 red. After two rounds of rejection of the unopened cheap wine. They decide to replaced a £9.99 red bottle, Gordon Ramsey, pls help the scores' kitchen!!!!!!!! Best Westen franchise around the world been consistently superior. Sad to say, Scores is not one of them.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Hello I am so sorry we failed to meet your expectations the other evening , it is well below our usual standards and should not have happened. I spoke with your party today and have confirmed that you are all happy with the service you have since experienced , how the situation was handled and that you have thoroughly enjoyed your stay apart from the occasion you highlight. As I mentioned to your father it was fun having you all stay with us, your sense of humour was infectious and we really admired the way you went out golfing in the most horrible weather but came back with smiles on your faces. Again I apologise for the fall in standards but hope you will all return again soon, to hopefully enjoy some sunshine at least! kind regards Molly

"Great Hotel, Great Staff, Great Location"

5
CurrieSmalls, Savage, Minnesota 09/04/2018

We recently stayed here on a family vacation (2 adults, 2 kids) and absolutely loved it. The main door to our hotel room actually led into a hallway...which then had a door to the bedroom for our kids, a door to our bedroom, a door to a full bath and another door to a 1/2 bath. It was nice to have a separate area for everyone! The staff at the hotel were amazing! They were so helpful and accommodating, they really wanted to make sure our stay was great...and it was! The location was perfect, a view to the sea and the first tee at the Old Course...which my husband loved! While my husband golfed, the kids and I went sightseeing and we were able to walk everywhere (our kids are 9 and 11). We had a rental car and there was free parking available right in front of the hotel.

We stayed at the Best Western Scores the night of March 16th, 2018. It's a lovely hotel. We had a beautiful view of the ocean and a bit of St Andrews golf course. It's a stellar location. The people were all wonderful. I might just mention that if you are a 24/7 person the internet is a bit unpredictable. There was however some bad weather and that may have had something to do with the issue. Highly recommend. The rooms are lovely and very comfortable.

"Nice Hotel"

bigkevj, Kansas 27/03/2018

Stayed here for one night on a family vacation. The building itself is pretty old, but you should expect that in Scotland! Weird layout with sinks in bedrooms and such, but overall a nice charming area for the price we paid. You can only buy certain drinks in certain bars, which was a bit odd. And breakfast was Horrible. It also was the warmest (temperature) hotel I have ever stayed in...and you cant control the thermostats in the halls cranking out the heat. Everyone slept with windows open because they were so hot. But a great location and friendly staff. If you get family rooms with the bigger beds...they are two beds pushed together.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review. I apologise for the lack of communication from ourselves, drinks are available from any bar, if they are not on display but we have the stock in another bar then we should have gone to fetch it for you, also all our rooms have thermostats on every radiator which allow you to control your bedroom temperature, again we should have explained this to you. King size beds are, as is common in many hotels in the UK, two beds joined together in a 'zip and link' system. I am disappointed your breakfast did not meet our usual standards, if we had been made aware, we would have rectified any problems that morning. I do hope you pay us a visit should you retirn to St Andrews in the future kind regards Molly

The room we had was rather small, but very charming, with much of the Victorian details, and a stunning view of West Sands beach. The Old Course, shops, and restaurants are all within easy walking distance. Service is excellent and we were welcomed by name when we returned, having stayed with them the previous year. Breakfast served with spectacular views - great way to start the day!

The views are fantastic, you can never, ever tire of them and as you say sitting in our Champion's Grill, having breakfast on a nice almost! Spring like day is unbeatable. Thank you for your comments re service and our welcoming staff, it is appreciated. Can I suggest that for your next visit you contact the hotel direct and our reception team will be able to provide a description about room sizes, views etc It is always gratifying when our guests return and we are very fortunate that we have many, many guests who stay with us every time they are visiting St Andrews, we are always aware that the town offers a huge range of establishments to choose from so we value every guest's visit. Looking forward to seeing you again kind regards Molly

Stayed one Saturday at short notice and was lucky enough to get a room. Staff friendly and quick service upon arrival. Had a twin room on 3rd floor. Very clean and nice decor. Ensuite was also clean with nice powerful and warm shower. Only downside with it was the WiFi was non existent in the room.

You couldn't really ask for a better location in St Andrews. The hotel is next to the golf course and has sea views over the huge expansive beach. We had a room on the third floor and the lift was very welcome on the way up but we didn't mind on the way down. Room was fine, clean, big and very warm. The bed was too soft for our liking and the duvet too heavy but this is a preference rather than a fault. Breakfast was really good - I had the mackerel, poached egg on spinach and roast tomatoes - delicious .... Also the buffet breakfast ,the second day, which was good - though items could run out quite quickly. Location wise - free parking at hotel, easy walk to beach or to town centre. We will be back in the future.

We booked the hotel on the day of travel. Surprisingly the rate was cheapest on booking .com, rather than the best western website (even with reward club membership). The hotel is right by the central gold course and looks over the sea. There is lots of free parking opposite. This is a well mainTained welcoming hotel. The staff were all extremely helpful and professional. We booked room 110junior suite. It was spacious, looked over the sea, had light to read, lovely large comfortable bed. It was a beautiful room.. the breakfast was great,, great fruit bar and cereals. Also the breakfast room looked over the sea. My husband had cooked breakfast (the potato scone was delicious), I had smoked salmon and egg. All great. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Great location for St. Andrews. Off the Main Street so it's quiet at night when you're asleep. Rooms are very large. Towels are fluffy. Bed is quite comfortable. Didn't want to leave it in the morning. Didn't try any of the bar or restaurant services.

Spent three days at Scores while we golfed at 4 different St. Andrews courses. Absolutely enjoyed the hotel and the surrounding area - highly recommended and make sure you view all the golf themed parlors.

Many , many thanks for your lovely review. It's a great time to play the courses as they are less crowded and less expensive ! We look forward to seeing you again in the near future kind regards Molly

"relaxing break"

We tavelled to St Andrews for a weekend break. We booked into the Scores hotel and what a pleasant surprise it was. The staff were most helpful and friendly and the location was spot on. On entering our very spacious room we discovered we had a fantastic view overlooking the West Bay. A five minuet walk and you were in the town centre a short walk outside the hotel entrance down to your left and you were at the famous 18th hole of the old course. brilliant location. We stayed bed and breakfast and what a breakfast it was I had the full Scottish breakfast and it was fantastic though I couldnt eat it all there was so much. Also you could choose from the buffet of cold meat cheese yoghurt fruit fruit juce or cereal. I would recommend booking bed and breakfast. Would we stay at the Scores again most certainly yes.

"Lovely Long Weekend Away"

LyallScott, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 14/11/2017

We stayed in a junior suite with amazing views overlooking the beach and sea. Excellenty location , literally at the 1st tee of the Old Course though never managed to get a game. Suite was lovely and we really appreciated being able to 'put our feet up' with a wonderfully comfortable sofa. It was bitterly cold outside but neither cold or hot inside, just right. Bath was utilised to relax both days we stayed as quickly filled up with lovely hot water. We took breakfast the morning we were leaving and found it very good with decent coffee too again with a magnificent view across the sea nd golf course. I know we were 'out of season' but nothing encouraged us to eat or drink in the hotel which was a pity. Menu appeared to be a little dated and when we did go for a drink the lounge bar it was empty. Staff were very friendly and helpful. This is a lovely Hotel with lots of history, great location, decent rooms but starting to look a little tired and dated. I would definately come back saying that.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
We appreciate your lovely review and are delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I would love to hear your thoughts on how we could do better re encouraging people to dine and drink with us and would be grateful if you could contact me at the hotel when you get a chance. "Room for improvement"

marcmW9868RY, Berlin, Deutschland 08/11/2017

The room was a little wet and cold. The radiators did not work. The staff during the check out was extremely unfriendly and not helpful. Generally, the hotel is great looking and has a good location with a great view

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
We are so sorry that your visit didn't come up to your expectations. I am surprised with regard to your comment about unfriendly staff as that is not the standard of service we normally provide, I cannot trace your stay date and would be grateful if you could perhaps e mail me with your room number and check in date so I can look into this further. Again our apologies for not attaining our usual level of service during your visit, I do hope you visit us again so we can show you this stay was the exception rather than the norm. kind regards Molly on behalf of the Scoires Hotel team

"Lovely hotel"

5
pn_davies, Chepstow, United Kingdom 06/11/2017

Stayed in a junior suite on the first floor which was just lovely. Room was large, airy and spotlessly clean with a super king size bed. Bathroom was basic, nothing special although had nice range of toiletries. It also had a great view of the sea but only if you could look through the trees - I would imagine in the summer when the tree is full of leaves our view would be blocked. Breakfast was lovely, although a little slow on the service but it was fine. We also ate dinner here and menu was varied and reasonably priced with food of good quantity and quality. Parking however was a nightmare. It says the hotel has 12 spaces but the only parking we could see was outside the hotel but was open to everyone, had to drive round the block 3 times before lucky enough to get a space. I would stay here again but I think the parking situation might put me off.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your lovely positive review. The trees you mention are on council owned land but we have been given permission to trim them back this winter so hopefully that will enhance the view. Re the parking I am disappointed that no one on our front desk made you aware of our small private car park to the rear of the hotel. It is limited in the number of spaces but at this time of year you should normally find a free space. When you return, and we sincerely hope you do, please phone beforehand and ask reception for directions on how to access the car park before you arrive to hopefully avoid driving round the hotel. We look forward to seeing you again soon kind regards Molly on behalf of The Scores Hotel Ltd team

"Great hotel for a golf break"

Alan F, Camberley, United Kingdom 27/10/2017

We had 4 nights here during a golf break. Fantastic location. You can walk ready to play to Old (and maybe New/ Jubilee). Great views from front rooms and restaurant. Full breakfasts tasty and filling, but leave time as food takes time to appear. Rooms clean and warm. Not the cheapest, but you are paying for location.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review and we are glad you enjoyed your golfing break and hope you return next year . The Winter Golf offer from the Links is worth taking advantage of and as you mention we are ideally placed for most of the courses, especially the Old Course. kind regards Molly

"Room with a view. I dont think so."

9Soosieh, Almancil, Portugal 21/10/2017

Trip planned for St Andrews and wanted somewhere central. Stay was Wednesday and Thursday night last week. Booked through Expedia at a rate of £378 for 2 nights bed and breakfast we thought. For that price thought we were getting 4 star. Looking at ratings now it seems only as much as 3 star some say 2 star. Booked a junior suite with King size bed. Got there hotel looked OK, the best thing I can say about it is location, just off the first tee. Checked in and was advised that breakfast was not included and unfortunately my paperwork didn't mention breakfast. Have done a search through Expedia for next week and that price included breakfast. Our room was 223 in the Seaton House. To get to it we had to go back down to entrance level to what was the basement. and through what was basically the storage areas for the cleaning materials. There was a 'nice' little sitting area at the entrance to the 3 rooms on this level but cant imagine anyone wanting to sit here as there were no windows or natural light. The room itself was a good size with nice sitting area although 2 chairs and a settee was a little over the top a coffee table would have been more use for putting coffee cups etc on. Went to look at our view. Website say 'There are 36 rooms in total, many of which have stunning overs over the West Sands whilst others enjoy an outlook over the landscaped garden and terraces.' Our room looked out onto the back of the hotel at a enclosed yard with a large waste bin and some pipes with a staircase from the ground level. Received a phone call asking of the room was OK and I advised that when we paid for a Junior Suite we didn't expect to be in the dungeon. See photos posted of the view. Reception apologised and said would see if there was another room. By this time I had unpacked and hubby had settled. Reception came back that there was another room available with a seaview but I advised we would make the best of it, as only there 2 nights and would be out playing golf most of the next day. If the other room was available why were we not given that in the first place?? Hubby wanted a nap and tried to sort out the lighting but seemed that you could only have the 2 chandeliers on together and the downlights in the middle of the room didn't work at all. Reported this to reception on our way out for the evening but looks like someone went in the room while we were out but nothing done. Breakfast on both days was not good. Had to make requests for orange juice to be filled, sugar for the table, more butter, and when we made these requests felt like we were out of order. Breakfast on the 2nd morning took an hour, from the responses it sounded like there was only one chef on but the breakfast room was not particularly busy. Would have liked to have had a drink in the hotel but the only bar open on both nights was the bar in the dining room. The Chariots bar was not open at all during our stay although we were advised it would be open on the Thursday evening. The room 223 has the worst view in the hotel. The other 2 rooms in the seaton house are still below ground level but have good bay windows and you can look out and see some view. I did make our observations at checkout but the response was 'I can only apologise' Sorry but it felt like my feedback was ignored. I don't usually write such long reviews but just felt we were ripped off a little with the price, the room and the fact that our rate paid to expedia included breakfast.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I apologise for any issues you had at breakfast, the length of time you say you waited is unacceptable and should not have happened. With regard to your rate with Expedia that is a matter between yourself and Expedia. As you said yourself there was nothing on your paperwork which stated breakfast was included so we were correct in assuming that the rate you paid was room only. The majority of our rooms have views over West Sands and the gardens at the rear. We can guarantee a sea view, subject to availability for a small surcharge and it was a pity that you did not want to take up our offer of a move to a room with a sea view. We hope you choose to visit us again and would recommend that perhaps you book directly with the hotel and allow our reception desk to describe the rooms offered in greater detail to avoid future confusion. kind regards Molly

"Good hotel but not when it is windy"

4
Payrollpaul, Northampton, United Kingdom 13/10/2017

Stayed for a night here. Staff were very friendly and helpful. I was in room 307 - was an ok room. Nothing too special but servicable. Had dinner in the grill restaurant onsite. Was really nice but the music they played over the speakers kept jumping ( would have been better to turn it off). Food was exceptional. Night time the wind really picked up and i had to choose between the wind whistling around the room with the window open or suffocating with ir closed. I went for the latter but was awake because the wind was so loud. Breakfast was terrific.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review. Sorry about the speaker system, I think we get so used to it on in the background during the evenings that we missed that particular fault. We would certainly have switched it off had we been aware. We appreciate all the positive comments about the staff and the food, I have passed them onto the team , everyone appreciates a compliment so thank you on their behalf. I can't think of a drawback re our location but by having such a lovely view we have to accept Mother Nature and it does get windy here, we have had some autumnal gales , they were described as the tail end of the destructive hurricanes in the Caribbean so the recent winds were the exception rather than the norm. Hopefully when you pay a return visit it will be a lot calmer - and quieter for you! look forward to seeing you again soon kind regards Molly on behalf of The Scores Hotel team

ChristineD20162016, New York City, New York 12/10/2017

Great location - walkable to the cathedral, castle, shops, restaurants. Free parking available. Rooms were ok (light over the sink kept going out, but really good water pressure in the shower). Older building so it had a lot of character. We grabbed a quick lunch here after checking in. Food was good, but service was really slow. Breakfast was ok. Cold options at buffet. Hot options have to be ordered. Again, good, but slow. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

The staff at the Hotel could not have been more helpful with any request and full of information that answered all my questions. Certainly, the location to the Old Course is perfect and within walking distance to a number of the nice restaurants in the town of St Andrews. May I suggest if it's your 1st time to St Andrews, add on a historical walking tour of the town too.

Gary B, yorkshire 28/09/2017

After strolling for a while we saw a sign for bacon sandwich and drink so we popped in and really enjoyed the experience, Shown to a dining room overlooking the sea we were greeted warmly by a lovely waitress who kept us amused while our food and drink was ready, she was a student at the local uni and was a credit to the hotel and uni. So helpful and friendly I wish I had taken her name. If we come back to the area will stay here.

Came on a very busy weekend to drop my son at the University and was initially concerned I was staying at a Best Western, but from the moment we arrived, we found exceptionally pleasant and helpful people in Scott at reception and Jenny the manager. Altho the only room available was facing the rear garden and it was a little tight, the location is very central to the town and faces the sea and the golf course. We had a very pleasant stay and highly recommend it if you're in St. Andrews.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for our kind review- we have passed your comments to Scott & Jenny who were delighted to have been of service. We hope your son has settled into uni , we're sure he will be making the most of student life in the town. Great trip with friends to play golf where golf began. Hotel was excellent for our location to our golf destinations. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast every morning was great. Walked out front door to see the 1st tee box at the Old Course. Would stay there again.

"Please give this restaurant a try!.**This review is for the Scores Restaurant Only**"

5
Bravehearted, Markinch, Fife 19/09/2017

The Scores Hotel should request Trip Advisor to enable Hotel and Restaurant reviews to be done separately. Maybe then, more diners will visit at lunchtime. Read On.......This restaurant is situated in a superb location overlooking the West Sands and Royal & Ancient Golf Headquarters. Very comfortable surroundings with stunning views. the Lunchtime menu is very varied and quite extensive and I have to say, great value for money. (2 courses £11.95 and 3 courses £13.95). I must say if you walk past this Hotel, you might think, 'that'll be too pricey and grand for the likes of me?'. How wrong you would be. I watched many people of all ages walk past the hotel unaware of the lunchtime offers. Perhaps the hotel should place an easily viewed advert by the pavement adjacent to the Hotel. Maybe they wish to retain their 'aloof' state....big mistake. I reckon if you totalled up the coarses we chose from the a la carte lunch menu provided, the total for each of us was around £26..all that for £13.95, is a no brainier, especially as the dishes served could not be faulted. We'll be back and if the restaurant is busy, this review will have served it's purpose.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for all your kind comments, I have shown your lovely review to all our staff and they appreciate it greatly. "St Andrews"

User 16/09/2017

Very nice hotel with gray location next to the 18th hole of the Old course. Within walking distance of the central ares of St Andrews. Ask for ocean view room and can view West Sands Beach of Chariot of Fire fame. The staff is very attentive and professional. The hotel room appointments and common areas of the hotel are a little dated but strangely this also was also one of the attractive qualities of the hotel. Everything was clean and operational. Breakfast was very good and foods served were typical of Scotland. We never ordered from the menu which had items more typical of American breakfast. Hotel is not inexpensive. Book early. No serious faults with this hotel and will stay there again when we attend our son'e graduation next year.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your lovely review and your insightful comments. We have many families who stay with us year after year throughout their son's or daughter's time in St Andrews and we always feel it is a privilege to share that time, one minute they are nervous first years and then before you know it they are graduating. Look forward to seeing you again next year- Do we have your reservation for your graduation stay? if not please call and confirm , as you can imagine it is a pretty busy time of year, with both rooms and bookings for graduation lunches and dinners. "location location location"

blairteam, New York 10/09/2017

Beautiful views. Easy parking. Of course convenient. Bed and linens were fine and clean. BUT it's an OLD hotel. The baths were probably updated 20-30 years ago. Maybe ok if at least they cleaned the mildew from the tiles or washed the dirt from the flimsy shower curtain. The carpets and public areas are worn and frayed. Not at all handicap accessible as there are many steps even to get to the lifts. The area is lovely and I wish this hotel matched the experience.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We have taken note of your comments and as part of a on going refurbishment programme we are working on the areas that need some TLC, as you said it is an old building which does restrict our disabled access although we do have a ramp which leads to the lift corridor avoiding the use of steps. kind regards Molly on behalf of the Scores Hotel team

"Perfect location for a St Andrews golf trip..."

5
Chugamos13, Makati, Philippines 06/09/2017

My buddies and I arrived late at night from 3 different continents into Edinburgh and staggered into our hotel a couple hours before our 7am tee time at the Old Course. If it weren't for the convenience and coziness of the Scores hotel being right in front of the starter and first tee of the Old Course, my buddies and I would not have enjoyed our version of the British Open as it unfolded across 4 rounds on 4 different courses over 4 days: Day 1: the Old Course; Day 2: Jubilee; Day 3: Castle; and last, but definitely not the least Day 4: Carnoustie. Even though most of our tee times were around 7am, we were still able to have a light breakfast or full Scottish breakfast for the later tee times. I'm addition, after our rounds, everything in Saint Andrews was conveniently walking distance from the Scores, including restaurants, supermarkets, the university and even Old Tom Morris' tomb to pay respects. Highly recommend this convenient and reasonable hotel to anyone looking to spend some time in Saint Andrews...

Found this hotel to be older but quite charming. Room was spacious with a view the R&A and a short walk to the course. Breakfast was always good and plentiful and the wi-fi was included and adequate. Can't beat the location and the service at the front desk was outstanding from helping get us into the room a little early after a day's travel to spot on recommendations for dinner. Would stay again.

"Could do (much) better!"

2
Flora268, Bristol, United Kingdom 15/08/2017

Positive points first: Great location especially if you have a room overlooking the sea. Comfortable beds, pillows etc. Well appointed room - good hairdrier, ironing board, hospitality tray, decent bath products Now for the down sides: -the public spaces are a bit down-at-heel - dingy and badly lit, shabby carpets and lots of (not very appealing) brown furniture -the restaurant, isn't awful, but it's terribly dull. Decent soup (well, it IS Scotland); choices on menu are of the fish and chips and meat and two veg, type. Generous portions. The breakfast is poor. Really uninspired, standard stuff and no treats like eggs Benedict/ good summer fruits/interesting cereal toppings. My scrambled egg was leathery and overcooked.Terrible coffee, tired-looking pastries, flabby toast. -the staff were friendly enough, but the service was very terrible, both at lunch and breakfast. Particularly so at breakfast. I was pushed for time on a Monday morning and the staff clearly thought that starting at 7 am, meant that they could saunter in at 7.15 without so much as 'sorry'. Be warned; if you order a taxi, make sure you go down to the foyer and watch out for it. There's no easy parking in front of the hotel and the drivers don't let reception know (and reception don't warn you about tha they don'tt! It's that sort of hotel.) I wouldn't stay here again (despite the view) unless I knew there had been a change in management. It's not wildly expensive and could be lovely, but it's poor value for what it is.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review

Slow to be served at Chariots Pub. All we wanted wanted was a pot of tea for 2. Finally got it. Sat down, gasping for a drink. Terrible, weak tea. Looked in pot. One teabag!!!! The blonde lass needs a lesson in tea making!!!

I think this hotel is the closest to the 1st tee on the Old Course. The hotel as a very nice wood finish throughout the building and reminds you of a historic hotel from 80 years ago. The staff was helpful and the rooms were large with a lot of character. You'll pay a lot for the location and charm.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
You are correct in thinking we are the hotel closest to the 1st tee of the Old Course. Thank you so much for your lovely comments. "Sunny Evening Dining"

4
Kay D, Glasgow, United Kingdom 16/07/2017

A short stay in St Andrews we were looking for an evening meal. While taking in the sights we came across the Scores, the menu appealed and we booked an early evening table for 4 adults and a 4 year old. The view from the 1st floor restaurant was amazing, traditional fixture and fittings including the tartan carpet. No atmosphere as we were the only diners. The food starters we choose tempura prawns, haggis Bon bon's, breaded chicken fillets all very good, mains steak pie, chicken and leek pie and Fajitas. Only the Fajitas were very disappointing served with very little veg. The staff were attentive (but we were the only people there) the prices were fair compared to others in the area. One downfall the dirty windows. I realise bird poo is a major problem by the coast but sitting opposite it eating my meal not attractive. Down stairs bar looked inviting we were back the next late afternoon with more family and sat outside enjoying drinks in the sun.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your review of our Champion's Grill and also the Chariot's Bar. We are very lucky to enjoy fantastic views over the West Sands and the Old Course. I am glad you enjoyed the food, I will pass on your comments re the fajitas to our chef. As you rightly point out seagulls are a major nuisance everywhere you go in St Andrews but it is probably the only drawback about being situated in such a beautiful spot. Sitting outside Chariot's Bar on a lovely sunny evening, overlooking the beach featured in the film that our bar takes it's name from and watching people coming up the 18th on the Old Course is hard to beat and I am glad you and your friends enjoyed relaxing there. We look forward to seeing you all again. regards Molly on behalf of the Scores Hotel Team

"Disappointing "

2
User 01/07/2017

The location of this hotel is fantastic, across the street from St Andrews Old Course. That is the only positive comment I can give. The staff was unfriendly upon our arrival and throughout our stay. Our room was terrible. It was very tiny and the toilet only worked about half the time. The room was directly over the kitchen so it was extremely loud when the restaurant was open. The windows had no shades or curtains which was problematic as it did not get dark until after 11:00 and was getting light again by 4:00 AM. When I mentioned these things to the staff they acted as if they had never heard these complaints before. I know that the kitchen noise curtain issues were written about in a previous review. I would not recommend this hotel.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry you encountered some issues during your stay. As you do not identify the date you stayed, nor the room number or your name it is difficult to address any of the problems you mention. "Great location for golfers"

travelonbegone, United States 29/06/2017

We stayed at the Best Western Scores Hotel April 2017. This location is perfect if you are playing at St. Andrews. It is adjacent to the 1st hole of the Old Course, just a quick walk away. The hotel itself is very nice, the staff professional and hospitable. Our room was comfortable and beautiful, a suite with a large sitting area, nice view of the sea and park across the street. Up the road, walking distance, from the University of St. Andrews, St. Andrews Cathedral & St. Andrews Castle.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your lovely review. We have been told many times that we have an enviable location in St Andrews and we agree, we never get tired of the view and for golfers to be literally feet from the Old Course is great. Thank you also for the lovely comments regarding our staff, they are a hard working, friendly team and it is nice to get positive feedback for their efforts . We look forward to seeing you again on your next trip to St Andrews. kind regards Molly on behalf of the Scores Hotel Team

"Lovely pub to visit!"

4
CHarman1992, Dundee, United Kingdom 26/06/2017

I come into Chariots bar on a fairly regular basis and have always enjoyed the classic décor, the view from the outside area and the outstanding service, hence the very good rating I gave the hotel. Food is good value and I like how fast it comes out. Only issue I've ever had was this weekend where I came into chariots, and there was a young man behind the bar who totally ignored me and after a couple of minutes I just left. I'll certainly be back, but it was a bit disappointing. All in all though, cracking hotel!

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Hello, many thanks for your lovely review. I'm sorry your usual welcome wasn't available this weekend. I will speak to our team to ensure that all guests are welcomed and served quickly. We have two young men who work in our Chariot's bar who are usually praised for their chat and welcoming attitude , I'm confident they will be disappointed that they failed to greet you in the proper manner. Very good hotel. Room was very clean and equipped. Room service did a good job. Breakfast was included for me (not sure if normally?) and it had some variety. Hello, thank you so much for your great review. It makes such a difference to our team when guests enjoy their stay. You had booked bed and breakfast, some of our guests choose the option room only . Yes, the view is fantastic, we work here every day and never, ever get tired of it. It is truly stunning, even on a rainy day like today. We hope you visit St Andrews again soon and make The Scores Hotel your first choice for accommodation kind regards Molly on behalf of The Scores Hotel team

"DELIGHTFUL hotel with a STUNNING location"

The free upgrade to a Suite honestly does not influence this review of what has to be one of St Andrews' best located and most inviting hotels! Fab room, super clean, great toiletries and a view to die for - will definitely go back (and good luck for a speedy recovery to the friendly middle distance running barman!!)

Hello, many, many thanks for your lovely positive review. It is so nice for our team to get a pat on the back and we truly appreciate it. We are looking forward to welcoming you back , hopefully by then our barman will be back running. kind regards M Beattie

"Sweet location next to Old Course"

Harcapster, Boston, Massachusetts 21/06/2017

Perfectly located. If only the hotel were a bit better. Room was large, nice bathroom but below grade. It was warm for Scotland and no AC was a problem. Their solution was a floordan which helped. Beds were soft and on rollers, sit carefully! Food quality was average for breakfast, poor for dinner. The bar was out of so many items, evidently some management issues. Wifi was ok In sum, come for convenience to but I suspect better options are closely.

bwscoresstandrews, Manager at Best Western Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Harpcaster Many thanks for your review. We note your comment about the bathroom and we have already started a refurbishment programme, but as you will appreciate it does take time to upgrade all the rooms. We have had some glorious weather recently which has meant higher than usual temperatures. Air conditioning is not really an issue we normally have to deal with and find that fans usually suffice during the warmer nights. We have taken note of your comments re dinner and the bar shortages, this was something that could have been avoided and we will take steps to rectify this in the future. We hope you do pay a return visit when you next come to St Andrews. kind regards M Beattie

"DONT!!!!"

Ladette23, Fife, United Kingdom 21/06/2017

We were at a wedding here and they were appalling! The food was all wrong and extremely disgusting! They forgot to serve the gluten free and vegan options, barely any staff and we were all left to our own accord so there was no service. Only 2 people at the small bar to serve around 100 guests, only 2 toilets as well & no disabled access. Our room had HUGE cobwebs hanging down from the ceiling, mould on the netting, curtains and around the windows, no bathroom light, no internet even when stated otherwise & we even had to ask for toilet roll. Nothing but noise throughout the entire night too. Breakfast was good, I will admit BUT again it was all wrong, they took over 30minutes in bringing it out - on top of the 20min wait from her showing us to our seats and taking our order & they mixed up the whole order. When I complained to the receptionist about some of the problems we had they just ignored it completely and replied with an exhausted "I'm sorry to hear that". That was all. I'm currently asking for my money back as I would expect this from a room costing £30, not £200+!!!

User 16/06/2017

My husband and I are not golfers, but this was a fantastic location. The hotel is directly adjacent to the beautiful Old Course at St. Andrews historic golf course. Just beyond that is the Western Beach. The Aquarium is just down the street. We could walk to the Cathedral, the Castle, the West Port, the Blackfriars Chapel, as well as all the delightful shops and restaurants. The hotel was very charming, large rooms, high ceilings, lots of beautiful woodwork, and the restaurant and bar were great. I would stay here again.

"High Tea. Think again!!!!"

1
winjim160, Renfrew, United Kingdom 07/06/2017

I booked this Hotel for a party of 90 Senior Citizens for High Tea. Some of the meals were cold, a half portion of fish, not enough scones for number of people at table. Later served cut in half and just defrosted!! The service was so slow . No side plates on table, ( had to ask for thes to be put out) tea and coffee served 15 minutes after cakes and scones appeared. Staff had no idea on how to present a high tea menu? Had no satisfaction when complained to General Manager. Would not return or recommend to any other organisation.

"Good Value Great Location"

User 03/06/2017

Stayed here for 6 nights on a St Andrews golf location. Having stayed last year at the Old Course hotel, I found Scores to be a much better value and an awesome location. It's just a stones throw from the 1st tee of the Old Course and right in the heart of downtown St Andrews. I stayed in one of the basement rooms. While it was a little dark, it was extremely quiet. The room was clean, bed was comfortable and the bathroom had been recently renovated and very good. I would highly recommend this place, particularly for a golf trip when you plan to be out most of the day but want a convenient, quiet and clean place to stay.

"Disappointing stay"

2
MK50Dundee, Dundee 29/05/2017

I booked this hotel via clubcard rewards hoping for an enjoyable one night stay in a prominent beachfront hotel. This was way off the mark I'm afraid Our room was on the third floor and even using the lift we had a trek to get to it It must have been one of the original servants quarters way back . It was tiny. The view was to the car park at the rear and sadly there was no bath, only a shower. The bed was so soft that we both woke up with backache! As we had reserved bed and breakfast we were hoping this would be the redeeming feature of the stay. Sadly we were seated for a good 20 mins before our hot breakfasts arrived. Poached eggs arrived on a large dinner plate sailing in water, I had to transfer these to my side plate to eat with my toast to avoid a soggy mess. They ran out of brown bread by 9am and also the croissant and pastries. My husbands toast looked like it had barely seen a toaster. The coffee tasted like weak instant, not the usual filtered coffee served in hotels. There is a general feel of tiredness about this hotel. I realise it is an old building but given the prices of the rooms surely they could upgrade Not recommended. ....

"DIsappointed!"

User 28/05/2017

We stayed here as we were collecting our daughter from university, and picked The Scores as we had previously been here before and enjoyed the experience. The first time we were given a big room with a sea view and a very comfortable large bed. On this occasion we were given a room over the kitchen with the associated noise and the constant noise of the fan. As it was warm we had to leave the window open and this affected our sleep. The bed was a double one and it would have been better if it had been a king size one. We generally stay in less expensive hotels and have usually had a king size or two single beds pushed together. The drink making facilities were fine, and the bathroom was perfectly good. At breakfast, the service was slow. It took at least five minutes for someone to offer us tea and coffee and take our order. When the toast was brought in, there was no room for the plate on the table due to the used dishes and plates, but instead of taking these away, the server put the plate on top of the tall vase in the middle of the table. It reminded us of Faulty Towers at this point. The food itself was good enough, most of us having the smoked salmon omelette. To be fair to the receptionist, she suggested contacting them prior to any future visit to ensure a more suitable room. However this is not likely. She also got us a jug of fresh milk for tea and coffee when we ran out. She was as helpful as she could be. This was supposed to be a treat for us, but we were really disappointed given the amount we paid.

"Great Location and Value"

1Noonan1, Charlotte, North Carolina 23/05/2017

This was my third stay at the Scores Hotel in St. Andrews. The Scores Hotel has a marvelous location just off the 18th green and 1st tee box of the Old Course. The hotel is clean and well appointed, and the service is generally good. The breakfast service was a bit disappointing as compared to previous visits, but certainly up to standard. Avoid the rooms below street level. They are large and comfortable and the kitchenette is a nice touch but the rooms are dark. Also Champions Bar was a bit disappointing. It did not seem as busy or interesting as it did on my prior visits. It does not seem to draw a local crowd any longer.

J C, Kirkland 19/05/2017

Great location, overlooking West Sands and the golf courses. Rooms are nice but nothing special. Breakfast is below par for Scotland, but perfectly edible. Internet is free but slow. Beds are comfortable, bathrooms large, but fixtures could be upgraded. Overall the place looks a bit tired, but the location is nice -- you can walk to everything. Parking is on the street, with a few places behind the hotel, so it depends on when you come in whether or not spots are available.

"A jewel of St. Andrews!"

5
Howarti, Ashburn, VA 08/05/2017

We were able to book the family room at this property and it was by far the best family room we have ever had. The room is actually a suite with a single door and entry area with two separate rooms - one full U.K. double (=US queen / king) and one with two single beds. Each room is equipped with a sink. There is one toilet room and a combined toilet/bath+shower room. This property is about as close to the R&A building as you can get. If you are visiting St. Andrews to play golf, this is the best deal in town for the cost and proximity to the links. Even though you are at the far west end of town, it is a short and very reasonable walk to the shops and restaurants in town. The breakfast is extensive and is an excellent value for the money spent. For one fee, you get a continental buffet and the option to order a hot meal off the menu which does include a full English breakfast as an option. Miscellaneous: - Car parking is available right in front of the hotel - The hotel has a golf bag storage room for guest convenience - There are two restaurants, one bar, and one cafe on property For the yanks (US people) this is NOT your average US Best Western. Don't ignore this property. I could add more but I have already written a short essay. Hope the info helped.

Best western is located on the first hole of the old course. Centrally located to all the sites, university and restaurants, all an easy walk and no need for a car. Typically don't like hotel restaurants, but the scores is an exception! We will be back!

This was our second visit to The Best Western and hopefully won't be our last. Were allocated a superb room overlooking The Scores,Beach & First tee. The bathroom probably needs updating but was spacious, bright with lovely toiletries. Service is super friendly. We had breakfast included which has a cold buffet as well as freshly cooked to order hot items and is served in a lovely room with great views. There is also a bar downstairs called Chariots which attracts golfers as well as locals and again service was very friendly - can recommend the potato skins as a snack to go along with drinks. The location is fantastic and would definitely consider again when returning to St Andrews.

"Check room choice"

Eta15, Livingston, United Kingdom 24/03/2017

We booked in for one nights stay last weekend. Unfortunately we lost the coin toss for the rooms and ended up in room 107 at the back of the hotel, supposedly an upgrade to a junior suite. The others were in room 214- much better standard of room. Heating wasn't on so room was freezing. Large room but very tired in places, grout and bath seal need attention. Staff quickly sorted heating. The view was supposed to be over the garden....eh no! Over the roof of the hotel extension. At night we soon realised the room was above a noisy generator so one of us had no sleep. Breakfast was delicious. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I did give a note of our concerns to the young receptionist as we checked out but this was met with little reaction and no concern shown for our negative experience. I thought I'd hear from the hotel about our concerns but a week later not a peep.

Jacksy438, Glasgow, United Kingdom 20/03/2017

Well located traditional hotel with stunning views from the sea facing rooms. Slightly dated hotel but still a great place to stay. Rooms are well equipped with the most comfortable beds and lovely white bed linen. Bathrooms fixtures have definitely seen better days but still very functional, lovely fluffy towels with the usual bathroom accessories. Tea, coffee, water and biscuits all complimentary, Ironing board and iron and what looked liked a air con machine in wardrobe. Hotel has downstairs cosy pub and a couple of restaurants attached, lift to all floors and an amazing sea view from the breakfast/restaurant room. Breakfast was great, everything you could want, cold buffet and hot choices. In all, wonderful location for the beach, golf course, shopping and sites. An old style hotel that has everything and wonderful staff. Sea view room a must!

The hotel has a great position and if you get a front facing room you will have a beautiful view of the water and the Old Course. The room was large and very clean and tidy. The staff were all very pleasant. The hotel is quite at night and no external noise. The food in the Grill was brilliant and Pam the supervisor was brilliant. The hotel was very comfortable and clean and keep up the good work.

Gorgeous views of the sea and the lovely building which houses the Royal and Ancient Golf Club. Front facing bedrooms have the same view but I had a room at the back which overlooks the hotel garden and the rear of various other buildings. Nice sized room though with large bathroom. Hotel was clean and well presented albeit a bit dated. Good choice at breakfast and freshly cooked breakfast too. Good location, in easy walking distance of the shops and attractions and a lovely walk to be had along the seafront. Would stay here again

"Breathtaking Location"

3
BoehmBawerk, Oxford, United Kingdom 09/11/2016

A breathtaking location, I headed out on a morning run from the hotel which brought the sight of dramatic, crashing waves, rock pools, the famous Old Course, war memorial and ruined castle and cathedral. St. Andrews is small so you are never far from anywhere but the hotel is in the perfect spot. Inside, it's pretty standard and not cheap - a reflection of the wealthy clientele the town attracts - golfers, rich Americans and minor royalty. If you can afford it, an atmospheric place to stay.

"Lovely hotel"

5
Lisa D, London, United Kingdom 04/11/2016

"Nice view but that's all"

2
GreenMabel, wiltshire 03/11/2016

First the positives - the views from the front of the hotel are stunning, and the service was friendly. Now the rest - our trip was a disaster from start to finish. We were travelling with our teenage son so booked a junior suite with a double room and an extra bed. On arriving found we'd been allocated 2 twin beds instead & no extra bed. It took some time for them to switch things round, as the hotel was full, and we were moved to a room in the basement - no views - which obviously hadn't been heated for days, although it warmed up eventually when we found the radiator thermostat ourselves. Bed was uncomfortable, and pillows are horrid and cheap. Breakfast next morning was terrible. We came down at 9.30 - breakfast finishes at 10 - to find many of the buffet items had already run out. Horrible oversweetened fruit salad and juice - is this a Scottish thing? The cooked Scottish breakfast was served without the advertised bacon or mushrooms, and the potato scones were burnt. I also stupidly left my phone charger in the room after we checked out. When I called the hotel a few days later to ask if they had it, they said they'd check & promised me a call back. Nothing. We will be regular visitors to St. Andrews for the next few years, but won't be staying here again.

For a golfer it is a perfect location, 150 yards from the first tee on the Old Course. Book a room with a view of the beach and the sea. There are plenty of restaurants within a 5 minute walk. The hotel is somewhat worn and tired, but we thought it had character and we enjoyed our 3 night stay.

Looking at some of the other reviews for this hotel, I'm somewhat surprised since we had such a good experience here. Our large and comfortable room was on the 3rd floor and looked out on the "Chariots of Fire" beach and the back of the R&A clubhouse, just a few steps away from the Old Course. The staff treated us well from the time we checked in until we left, especially the folks at the front desk. We enjoyed being able to order what we wanted for breakfast and the food was quite good. Another advantage for us was being able to park in the off-street parking lot. All in all, a very enjoyable stay during our trip around Scotland.

"Dated and tired. Rooms freezing."

1
Kirsty7046, Bedlington, United Kingdom 27/10/2016

This hotel is in an excellent location. The view is wonderful. However there has to be a time when you can't just rely on the view. The hotel is very tired and dated. Needs complete refurbishment. The rooms aren't sound proofed. I could have had a conversation with the gentlemen next door in the bathroom. The rooms were freezing and the radiator thermostats in the bedroom were broken. The radiator in the bathroom came on in the morning. The sink in the bathroom was cracked and the fittings so dated it was impossible to keep the plug holes clean. The bar was advertised as being open 11-11. When we came back after eating out (hotel menu was very unappealing) at 9pm the bar was firmly closed. Breakfast was slow. We had to be somewhere and left an hour for breakfast. When our hot food hadn't arrived 30 mins after being ordered we had to ask the waitress to hurry it along. By that time there was no bread to toast and no time to sort it out. Do yourself a favour and book the premier inn down the road, much cheaper and you have to assurance if you can't sleep as you're too cold you can get your money back.

bwscoresstandrewsgm, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Kirsty7046 Thank you for your recent review via tripadvisor, the service levels you have received are clearly well below the standard we expect for our guests. Contrary to belief we do not sit back and rely on our location, we do in fact have a rolling program of refurbishment in place this year as we are fully aware of our short comings and have plans for redeveloping our product. With regards to food service there is no excuse for this and corrective action is being put into place to rectify this. Regards Marc A Adams Regional General Manager [email protected]

Overall very good experience - staff friendly and professional, room good with very comfy bed, and location is perfect. Right next to the 18th and looks out over the sea. Only let down? Waiting staff at breakfast very slow and not too great in terms of customer service. Breakfast just about okay. Decor a little dated. Other staff saved the day - the reception team were excellent.

"Location, location, location!"

Tomster5, Texas 10/10/2016

Great location for walking to the six golf courses on the St. Andrews property and to the stores and pubs in town. The golf shop called Aucholines or something close to that is right there on Golf Place for club rentals and anything else you might need to play. I would wake up in the morning, have the awesome breakfast at the hotel, and walk to the golf courses. I would play dawn to dusk before going back to our very nice room with a view of the R&A and the beach. No car needed here but they do have a parking lot behind the hotel through the stone arch if you need it. It's a short walk to the links clubhouse for the New Course and the Jubilee Course both of which I highly recommend playing. It's a big longer walk to the Eden clubhouse for the Eden, Straththyrum, and Balgove courses but a very pleasant walk on the Old Course. The hotel is extremely close to the first tee of the old course. If you watch any tournaments from the Old Course on t.v., you will see an old red stone building by the first tee box right behind the 18th green. This hotel is right behind it! How great is that? The staff made us feel welcome and we loved the laundry service, the food, and the views! It's also very close to the University, a Tesco grocery store, and many many pubs and restaurants not to mention lots of golf shops and some famous ruins. Scott helped us with a small check in issue which we greatly appreciated. Looking forward to returning for more golf!!!!

This hotel is right at the end of the eighteenth green on the Old Course. You can stand on the porch and see the aquarium. And it is about a five minute walk to town. Great location. The room was a standard English hotel room, nothing fancy, but clean and nicely decorated. They have a large dining area that overlooks the coast. I would stay here again.

"Restaurant review"

3
James H, Noosa Heads 08/10/2016

To sum it up it could be much much better ! Great view and pretty nice decor but ...... You would expect better from a hotel of this standard. 4 of us had a meal and we were unanimous that this was average. The fish n chips were very ordinary - you could get much better at the local fish n chip shops. I had the pork was very tasty but I would have need fish n chips afterwards had it not been for the average sticky toffee pudding for dessert. The restaurant was empty on a Dunhill Golf weekend which pretty much sums it up. Clearly the restaurant is not their focus and neither should it be yours.

"A Rotary evening"

Ronald S, St. Andrews, United Kingdom 04/10/2016

The Scores Hotel hosts both the St Andrews Rotary Club and the St Andrews Kilrymont Rotary Club every week. I had the pleasure of being the guest speaker at the evening gathering of the St Andrews Kilrymont Rotary Club. I was impressed by the friendly staff and the quality of our 2 course meal- the chicken and leek pie was particularly tasty. Finding a parking space near the hotel on The Scores can be problematic and frustrating, but if you are lucky there is a bonus, there is no parking charge. The car park behind the British Golf Museum is convenient but there is a charge between 8am- 5pm. However overnight is free. Being almost adjacent to the Links the Scores Hotel is particularly ideal for any golfers ; and it is also close to the Town Centre for visitors intent on shopping or looking for a coffee house or other attractions.

Fantastic location with views overlooking the Royal & Ancient golf course and the famous "Chariots of Fire" West Sands. We were lucky and got a sea view room on the top floor with all the views. The breakfast room has magnificent picture windows giving magnificent views of the golf course, the West Sands beach (approx. 2 miles of fantastic beach). Plenty of places to eat nearby and the hotel even has car parking spaces which is a must-have in St Andrews. Highly recommended.

We stayed for one night mid week in a family room, which had two separate bedrooms, a separate toilet to the bathroom and wash facilities in the rooms also. We requested feather free bedding, which was all arranged for our arrival. A lovely breakfast was served also. We had French toast, smoked salmon eggs on a muffin, scrambled eggs with haggis. There was lots of choice. Lovely service too!

There's so much to like about this hotel. Staff are charming, location is unrivalled, and the value is the best in (this generally overpriced) town, but the beds are the most uncomfortable I have ever slept in, anywhere. The hotel itself is what you'd expect for a three star Best Western, i.e. a bit dated, with cheap fixtures and fittings (I didn't know they still made soft plastic loo seats!), but all the good sides make up for that. At 2/3ds the price of the neighbouring Hotel du Vin, I thought it was worth a try, but after two of the most uncomfortable nights sleep ever, I now realise it was a false economy. Shame really.

"Great Location"

shelleyham, Peachtree City, Georgia 26/09/2016

We stayed here one night and would stay here again simply for the location. It's within walking distance of the Golf Course, the beach, shopping, dining and the ruins. The staff was very friendly. Our guys golfed both mornings and the hotel accommodated the holding of their rental clubs for pick up the second day. We ate breakfast one morning and it was the typical continental menu but you could order from a menu. A little pricey for what's offered. We would stay here again.

"Close to everything "

buffalobob, Buffalo 25/09/2016

This is a great hotel, you can see the first tee at St Andrews from the front door. Spacious room, wonderful and friendly staff. Close to everything in town. Breakfast is not included and our only small issue was that we only had tea and a pastry but still had to pay for the full continental breakfast. Would stay there again in a heartbeat

"Great location, but skip the meals"

Jerry S, Carol Stream, IL, United States 23/09/2016

The junior suite was very roomy, including a large bathroom. The staff at the front desk was fantastic, with several excellent recommendations, assistance with directions, calling cabs, and overall friendliness! It is an older building, but that adds to its charm. The included breakfasts were fair and dinners were not great, but we were told they were in the middle of a chef change when we were there.Fantastic location....250 yards to the first tee at the Old Course!

"Great location w nice rooms. Food is a gamble "

426hanse, Vancouver, Canada 19/09/2016

I'll start with the good; the room was the best we had during our weeklong stay in Scotland. The hotel itself is very well situated and the staff very friendly and helpful. I feel bad for the servers in the restaurant as the kitchen moves at glacial speed as soon as there are 3 or more orders that come in - stack the odds and get your order in quick! The servers try hard and Lindsay was a gem, but week old recycled haggis is tough to disguise. Stay away from any of the steaks as they are totally inedible. The risotto was a safer, passable bet. The good news is that there are good restaurants up on Market street.

"Location, Location!!"

Mrs. Richardson, Kelowna, Canada 13/09/2016

My husband and I spent 2 nights at the BW Scores. The staff were friendly, the hotel was clean, the bed was comfortable, the room was large (junior suite),. and it's located steps from the Old Course. The hotel looks over the ocean, although not all rooms do. The breakfast buffet was very good served in a lovely room overlooking the ocean. If I come back to St Andrews, I'd stay here again.

"This place is so cool."

4
Endoftired, Washington DC, District of Columbia 12/09/2016

This hotel is actually two converted Victorian homes (one was an old boys home or school, as I recall). You can literally throw a golf ball and hit the Old Course from the from steps. The restaurant is very good...Chef was hilarious and skilled. We had the Carvery on the Sunday we arrived, and breakfast the following morning; both were very good. Staff was very friendly. We stayed in on of the Family rooms, and this was two complete rooms with a full bath and a water closet. The beds were very comfortable, and the rooms were huge. The hotel is old, and therefor not heavily insulated against noise, so pack ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. But for the location and the price...you can't beat it.

"Just prfect"

PartagasCat, Alberta 11/09/2016

What great find, location can't be beat. Great staff, smith check in, great character rooms, amazing water pressure and even a tub! High ceilings with some old world detail and charm, glad we scored on this one!

"Great location, great value"

4
Whitney H, Atlanta, Georgia 11/09/2016

The location is perfect! It really could not be in a more perfect place. We stayed here for one night while my husband played golf. The staff were very polite and accommodating upon check in. Our room was very large and clean. My only complaint was the bed. The mattress was a little lumpy and could probably use an upgrade. But other than that, I can't complain!

"High Tea"

User 10/09/2016

Had a lovely 5 star high tea with Pam serving this afternoon in the Champions Grill overlooking the ocean. Could not have picked a better location for a sea view lunch! Delicious cakes and lovely sandwiches. Would definetly come again for afternoon tea. 10/10

"Delightful old hotel"

4
Garrett D, Alamo, California 08/09/2016

You can see The Old Course from the front of the hotel. The room we stayed in was a lovely junior suite. Very comfortable, spacious and quiet. Large screen TV and good wifi. Dinner in the hotel was very good. The ocean view from the dining room is unobstructed. Staff was very helpful. Shout out to Benji at the front desk. Only slightly negative comment is that the included breakfast is very lackluster. No hot food and by 9 am, it was all picked over. (It is open until 10.) We were able to park for free directly in front of the hotel. Take a walk out to the rocks in the ocean directly in front of the hotel.

"Okay but not great"

Solitude1, New York City, New York 05/09/2016

The location can not be beat. Close to the water and golf course. Unfortunately our room was really small with a view to the back roof. Really disappointed after reading reviews of rooms. Not 103 !!! Breakfast was quite nice and staff helpful. I should have been more assertive about room choice. The couple we traveled with had a much better room for same cost.

"...comfortable stay with an iconic view"

4
Grace L, Seattle, Washington 05/09/2016

When we finally arrived after dealing with a flight cancellation and missing bags, it was really nice to be greeted by a friendly receptionist who got us settled in and provided directions on where to purchase some essentials. The location is iconically situated in front of the 1st and 18th hole of the Old Course and less than a 10 min walk to the shops and restaurants on Market St. It's also about a 15 min walk to the St Andrews driving range. As you might expect the building retains its old world charm with quite a few steps between floors, oddly shaped rooms, and little to no sound proofing. However, the rooms are comfortable and cozy and the bathroom is well furnished with great amenities and plush towels. Don't forget to stop into Hams Hame Pub at the corner of the building to grab a dram or 2! Super friendly staff and very knowledgeable about the local whiskey!

"Fantastic Location"

4
elliotj, London, United Kingdom 05/09/2016

Stayed one night and were allocated a fantastic room - suite style with a great view of the sea and the old course - could not have asked for a better room. Service was friendly & willing throughout from check-in to check-out. It seemed as though the hotel was reasonably quiet as the main bar was not opened so we had to order drinks from the small bar area - we then took these outside as the weather was fine which meant walking back down the stairs to street level (the bar staff did offer to carry our drinks for us if needed) this however seemed a possibly lost opportunity for the hotel as at least 2 other groups asked us where we had got our drinks as they had also wanted to sit outside & couldn't quite make out where the bar was. Also if you wanted a post dinner drink it meant sitting at a dining table which didn't quite feel right. The only other small thing was that there was no soap in the room - the toiletries however were lovely and made up for this. The hotel is a little dated in parts but we wouldn't hesitate to stay again as the location & friendly service compensated.

Had a great stay at the Scores in St Andrews, staff were friendly and welcoming especially Scott on reception - nothing was too much trouble for him what a star !. We didnt dine in the restaurant but the menu looked lovely. Our room was tastefully decorated for the style of the hotel and very comfortable. In the morning we opted for room service breakfast which was delivered promtly to our room. Will definately be back

"Poor staff, poor service...but a great location..."

2
Rcdown78, Hobe Sound, Florida 30/08/2016

How to describe this slow, stodgy and uncared for place? Well, to start, the staff is wholly without energy, and without any sign of caring for its customers. My bathroom had no kleenex for a week; no clean glasses in the room, glasses from room service were left in the room, etc. And the same was true for my colleagues. Breakfast quality was poor, and matched by the service. The bar was rarely open. There was absolutely zero assistance at the front desk for questions about faxing or sending pdfs. The internet connection was spotty. How could a place perform so poorly across the board? I think the answer is easy: they believe you will stay there because of their excellent location...regardless of how poor the staff performs, how sloppy the housekeeping is and how poor the overall guest experience is. They have no incentive to perform well, since they believe you will stay there anyway because of where they are located. This place is very deserving to be called a dump....but then there is the location...

"Warm welcome and attentive service give it TOP Scores!"

staytripper, Morristown, NJ 28/08/2016

Arriving almost at midnight, I was tired with the drive from Edinburgh, having played golf earlier that day. I was greeted cheerily by a concerned staff member who helped check me in. About twenty minutes later, he was behind the bar, helping me shake off the tension of driving along minor roads that often had road works in progress. Breakfast was a delightful Scottish breakfast with good service and plenty of choices while affording beautiful views of The Old Course, just a wedge away. The Scores is a great location for those who want to sample the delights of St. Andrews. The Old Course is right across the road, as are the well-stocked stores. I highly recommend it.

Robert S, Woodbridge, United Kingdom 26/08/2016

Overnight golf stay, great location for old course , rooms very tired and bathrooms dated, key card didn't work , no apology from reception. , food in restaurant not great limited choice in bar , white wine warm , poached eggs at breakfast took an age and expensive ....plenty of good restaurants in St Andrews. Should be better really ....but it is a good location ...but not enough for a revisit...there's better options .

"If it weren't for the"

3
boblovesnat, Fort Worth, Texas 26/08/2016

If it weren't for the location, I would have scored The Scores lower. Staff was pleasant but room, facilities , breakfast all were lee than I hoped for the money spent. Only the charm of the town and lovely stroll to e cathedral ruins made up for such a shabby hotel. This place is in need of a major rehab. Rooms are dated, small and stifling. The bathroom tile with mildew and mismatched and the tub a hazard. Spend a little time to find a B&B if you book early enough. I PES if you are golfing all day, then this would suffice.

"Best location in St Andrews"

4
MEEPWG, Pasadena, California 23/08/2016

Greatest feature is the hotel's location just steps from the 1st tee and 18th green of the Old Course. Hotel staff were wonderful - very friendly and accommodating. Comfortable, friendly hotel with small guest rooms, some of which overlook the sea. Delicious breakfast in room overlooking the North Sea. We will definitely return to this hotel when in St. Andrews.

We had a junior suite that was to have a view of the course.. it had a view of the sidewalk and the tables from a nearby bar too. Luckily it was raining that night and so no party folks were out there. Room was quiet, so that's good. However, we had the windows shut b/c of safety issues, and it got hot. Used the fan that was included in the room. To get to this junior suite, we had to walk past the laundry rooms, which was odd. We had an included breakfast but were charged for it. The front desk person did take it off, after a discussion. All in all, i think you might be better off with another hotel in st. andrews.

bwscoresstandrewsgm, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear profwho88 Thank you for your recent review via tripadvisor, our junior suites are throughout the hotel and they have a mix of views both front facing and rear facing, when we do receive a guest request for a front facing view we always do our best to accommodate requests. Our great experience started at check-in when we were greeted by Scott. What a nice greeting and just a genuinely nice man who appreciates his guests. He is great for their business!! We had a junior suite and it was very large and beautiful. The hotel is beautiful and is right across from the Old course golf course at St. Andrews. We ate at Alexander's restaurant and the staff were very friendly and the service was wonderful.

SusanNewYorkCity, New York City 25/07/2016

I was not impressed with the specific hotel receptionist but things improved in terms of the hotel. Even though the hotel is dated, the room was clean, the bed comfortable, and the breakfast was well prepared with options for gluten free needs. The location is prefect. The goodie bag for Best Western members should be eliminated or else upgraded as it took away from the appeal of the stay. IF you arrive after golf , you will have an easier time to park, otherwise they have a parking lot behind the hotel. We never found it and eventually secured a spot in the front of the hotel.

I arrived with my husband to this hotel for a 2 night stay. Everything was outstanding from the moment we walked in the door to the minute we left. We were greeted by (Scott) the hotel receptionist at check-in. He did not fail at making us both feel welcoming with his smile and first class service. I have to take this opertunity again to thank him for going that extra mile for us i.e booking our restaurant, helping with directions, but most of all making us feel relaxed and happy to be visiting The Scores and St Andrews (you are a credit to your company). We enjoyed our stay incredibly and will be returning very soon. Thank You.

Had an overnight here on Friday 22/07. When we arrived the receptionist was lovely and very helpful. Arranged an upgrade to a suite with a sea view. Only complaint which was out with hotels remit was the huge tree in front of our room window slightly got in the way of our view. Clean and comfortable hotel. Staff very very nice and obliging. Good choice of breakfast. Would stay here again and would recommend. Maybe a few wee upgrades required but all in all a nice hotel for being 3 star. In a prime location

"Unimpressive service"

1
Ann M, Glasgow, United Kingdom 21/07/2016

We had a lunch reservation elsewhere in the town for my 50th birthday; since it was such a gorgeous day, we looked for somewhere with a view to have a drink outside. I ordered a glass of red & a glass of prosecco. It took 15 minutes to arrive, although there were 3 staff in the bar when I ordered and not a huge number of customers - all of whom were only having drinks. When it did arrive, my prosecco was warm & flat. I was so annoyed & threw it onto the grass. My husband took the empty glass to reception and said the service was deplorable & the wine was warm. We were just waiting long enough for him to finish his glass. I had just made a mental note never to come back, but did think it was poor that nobody came to follow up on his complaint. After another 10 minutes, somebody came out with a cold bottle of prosecco & offered me a glass, but by this time we had to go, so she offered me my money back and the bottle. She disappeared to get the refund, but yet again another 10 minutes passed, so we got up to leave, at which point she arrived with the refund, but in the interim, the bottle of prosecco offer seemed to have disappeared. I didn't bother pursuing it, would just hate to think what the service is when they are actually busy....or maybe they aren't busy because of the shocking service.

A big birthday for my wife. We had a lunch booking elsewhere but settled at an outside table for a pre lunch drink in the glorious sunshine. Fully fifteen minutes after we placed our order our wine arrived. My wife's proseccio , not even chilled, it was warm. We were disgusted, and the contents were emptied on the grass. "Best" Western. I don't think so.

Grand visit if you arrive at 2:00pm or later. Very unsatisfactory if you arrive anytime before 2:00. Look like staff feel you only pay for 2:00pm to 11:00am and will not life a finger to see if the room is ready before time. Need a parrot at the front desk from 11:00 am to 1:55.. continually repeating 'Chickens at too, chickens at too!

bwscoresstandrewsgm, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Alex S Thank you for your recent review via tripadvisor, whilst I must agree that the team should have contacted our housekeeping department to enquire as to the status of your room, unfortunately it is not always possible to check guests in early if departing guests leave later than anticipated. If we know in advance a guest wishes for an early check in we would always service this room first but unfortunately as most of our guests do arrive early at times there can be a back log. Overall please accept my apologies for the delay you experienced and I will pass this onto the team so that we can put corrective actions into place. "Return to St.Andrews"

4
User 15/07/2016

I was a student in St.Andrews in the 80s and this was a holiday to introduce my family to it. The last time I was in the Scores was 1989. We had great stay at The Scores St.Andrews in a family room, which was actually two rooms with a little entrance hall between them and one bathroom and one separate toilet (no sink in there tho?). The rooms were comfortable and there was no noise at all- nice view over the back garden. Breakfast was good, with a choice from the menu or small buffet (loved the smoked salmon). Porridge was on but not on the menu- a nice touch was the friendly lady who remembered I'd asked for it, and asked me the next day if I would like it again. The staff were all very friendly; this is a quiet hotel in an excellent location, especially for golfers, as the Old Course is literally a 30second walk away. My only criticism was the housekeeping- the bathroom (floor definitely) wasn't cleaned during our stay but towels were replaced and bin emptied), bins in the bedrooms were not emptied one day due to a mix up . We had to buy water from outside as our bottles of water and coffee were not replenished - was this supply to last the three days? I don't know - this did not spoil the stay however, and I would definitely return. Would I recommend The Scores? Most definitely. Was it value for money? Most definitely - £702 for three nights bed and breakfast for three adults (over 12 is adult) and one child. Thanks.

This hotel is all about location as it is a stones throw from the first hole of the old course at St. Andrews. The rooms are up to the standard of a 3 star hotel as advertised and the breakfast is ok but not that great. Staff are friendly and helpful. The night porter can organise an early breakfast if you have a tee time before 7am. I have stayed there a couple of times as it is not that expensive but is in such a great location. If location is your thing it does not get any better.

Nice hotel in a great location about 200 yards from the 1st tee of the Old Course. Room 106 is large with a GREAT view of the R&A, 18th green, and first tee. Standard breakfast in a nice room. Short walk to town too.

You won't get many better located hotels in St Andrews, however the hotel is resting somewhat on its laurels. It's clean and tidy but 3 stars is a fair rating, unfortunately the breakfast wasn't great and the service a little odd at times.

"GREAT FAMILY HOTEL"

5
Pam K, Allen, Texas 03/07/2016

Brought the family to St. Andrews for a birthday gift of golf for my husband. Hotel staff was very accommodating to every request. We reserved a family room (well priced) which had two separate bedrooms and baths, perfect for a family of four. Amazing homemade shortbread cookies in the lobby, great food in the restaurant, and the obvious-- a perfect location for golfers. While my husband golfed, the kids and I had plenty to do, being able to walk to St. Andrews castle (very kid friendly place) and shops and restaurants in town. Took the St. Andrews shuttle to and from the EDI airport which made it a breeze and low stress.

"Location, location!"

4
CatherineCDavis, Princeton, New Jersey 01/07/2016

Practically ON the 18th hole of the Old Course, the location could not have been better. Parking is challenging, however, and the staff person was neither sympathetic nor helpful about that when we checked in. The room assigned to us was very hot, and when we couldn't open the window the extremely nice evening manager had us moved quickly to a lovely room overlooking the water, which rescued our opinion! The decor is probably ready for an upgrade, but the location more than makes up for it!

"Comfortable Suite in Fabulous Location Next to Old Course"

4
winepair, San Francisco, California 26/06/2016

We selected this hotel because it was across the street from the Old Course on St. Andrew's Link. It is also next to the bay with a large expanse of grassy knoll to walk on. They advertise free parking, but if you arrive at the wrong time of the day, there is no room to park. We had to park way down the street, and then move our car later to be close to the hotel. We had booked a suite, which was large, roomy, and comfortable. The bed was one of the bed we slept on during our trip. The only disappointment was we didn't have an ocean view, but had a nice garden view instead. For breakfast you could order from the menu and also eat at the buffet. It was included with the room. The service was especially good here -- with very friendly employees. I also met the owner, who introduced himself and said he had another hotel in Florida. He had purchased the Scores Hotel in the 1980's because he loved to play golf. He said the Best Western managed it for him. It had to be the fanciest Best Western I've ever stayed in -- very unusual for the basic and usually inexpensive Best Westerns we have the in the US. This hotel is actually in an old mansion-type house, and even has stairs in the hallways, which were a bit difficult with my luggage. Overall a good stay. We checked in at 2pm, and then walked over to the Old Course to see if my husband could get on as a single. Amazingly he was on the course by 3pm! And the day turned out to be warm and sunny. A wonderful start to our golfing visit to St. Andrews.

As a 67 years old lady golfer from Cape Town, South Africa, I recently drove through Scotland, by myself and stayed for 2 nights at the Best Western Scores Hotel in St Andrews. It was a truly unbelievable experience made even more special, by the care and service I received from the duty manager, Scott, who was on duty when I arrived, right through to the restaurant and pub and also the administration staff, when I checked out. The food was equally good, the room I stayed in was fabulous, comfortable beds and tastefully appointed. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and hope to return there, one day soon.

"Dated Rooms"

Davida_Davida, Jakarta, Indonesia 07/06/2016

The hotel rooms are dated although located near the old course. Rooms need more temperature control in cold months. Wifi is okay, breakfast is okay. A lot of stairs to your rooms so dont carry heavy luggage. Parking is free around the hotel. Plenty of eateries, within walking distance to the whole city.

bwscoresstandrewsgm, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Davida_Davida Thank you for your recent review via tripadvisor, our bedrooms are very traditional in design and furnishings and although would benefit from some modern touches they do appeal to a large cross section of our regular guests. We do now have a day porter to assist guests with luggage or alternatively we do have a lift going to all floors. Regards Marc A Adams General Manager [email protected]

"Perfect Location"

The Scores Best Western offers any visitor to St. Andrews a great experience in what can only be described as the perfect location. Sitting outside the hotel on a summers evening having a drink, you are able to watch the golfers approching the 18th Green of the Old Course. Very smart and friendly staff and a goog hearty breakfast to set you up ufor the day. Highly recommended.

"Poor Service, Good Location"

2
Mark D, North Houston, Texas 03/06/2016

This hotel has a great location. Walking distance to all the restaurants, pubs and attractions in St. Andrews. Our room looked out onto St. Andrews Bay and partially onto hole 1 at the Old Course. You can walk to the Old, New, Jubilee & Eden Courses. Our room was a good size and the bathroom was a decent size as well (Jr. Suite). Those would be the only positives about this hotel. The service overall was very poor. In order to get our tee time at the Old Course we had to stay at the Scores Hotel and eat one dinner at the Champions Grill. We were led to believe that this was going to be nice dinner with excellent food. The place as empty and the other guests there were in jeans. The food was probably step above pub food. We also asked two servers if the alcohol was included in the pre-paid dinner. To our surprise we were told yes that everything was included. After dinner the front desk notified us that alcohol was not included and that we were to pay for it. We asked how we should have handled differently since we asked multiple employees and they had no answer and only that they we need to get with management on how to handle the bill. The service at the restaurant during breakfast was very poor as well. There were multiple times that we waited over 30 minutes to order even though only 3 tables had guests. The once we ordered it took another 30 minutes just for an omelet or french toast. It almost seemed as if it was intentional. We also had issues with the maid service as well. There were multiple days when we left the please clean sign on the door but no service was provided. I'm not sure if we did anything wrong with tipping or not. We were told to usually leave a few pounds on the bed or desk for the maid service and we did so. Not sure if the staff took offense to that or not. Even asking the front desk for restaurant recommendations was difficult. Every time we were given the same 2 places to try. We went to the Dunvagen and asked and they gave us great selections to try when they were full. If you don't care at about service this hotel is great solely on its location and you get a room with a view. I usually don't mind the service too much but it was so noticeably bad that it did affect our time there.

bwscoresstandrewsgm, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Mark D Thank you for your recent review via tripadvisor, firstly please let me assure you that tipping or not tipping has no effect on the level of service you receive, as a service industry the teams priority must always be the guest first and foremost. Overall the service you received did not even achieve the most basic service level and is hugely apparent the team in place need re-training as a matter of urgency. Overall please accept my personal apologies on these matters and these will be dealt with accordingly with the team as we need to make serious improvements as a matter of urgency. "Not worth money"

Denise636, Dundee, United Kingdom 03/06/2016

Stayed here last week on my birthday as we were attending a wedding reception in another hotel outside St Andrews. On arrival was not impressed with greeting not very friendly. Room was very dated however clean - did ask for a room with a view no joy as we were at back of hotel. Breakfast in morning was a total shambles, we were told to sit anywhere and left. Waited for about ten mins until Pam attended to us her service was excellent. Buffet food was very disappointing - hardly any choice available as not refilled enough shocking for price this hotel charges. Should have just got wedding bus back home, would definitely not stay again.

bwscoresstandrewsgm, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Denise 636 Thank you for your recent review via tripadvisor, unfortunately at weekends we are at our busiest and rooms with a front facing view do generally fill very quickly. Our rooms are very traditional in design and décor which the main core of our guests seems to enjoy although I agree some more modern touches are required. Breakfast is a huge area for concern and one in which we are dealing with as a matter of urgency. Overall I do hope my personal apologies can be accepted in this matter as the hotel in no way exceeded your expectations and fell very short, thank you for all of your comments as these will be used to aid re-training. nigel w, York, United Kingdom 02/06/2016

My Dad Paid over a grand for a coach tour and to stay at this hotel for xmas 2015 it was an absolute disgrace from start to finish, no heating, breakfast buffet cleaned out with no replacement, poor service from foreign staff, manager on holiday and no sympathy or refund from best western. Keep Clear of it.

bwscoresstandrewsgm, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Scores Hotel, responded to this review
Dear nigel w Thank you for your recent review via tripadvisor, although I would note that there are certain ways these issues can be dealt with most of these being directly with the hotel. I took over as general manager five weeks ago and must admit your points are most valid from previous guests feedback. It is very difficult to resolve this issue as it was six months ago, it would be the hotel direct and the tour company that would resolve such issues opposed to best western. I am more than happy to discuss this more in depth with yourself. This is certainly not how we treat customers, I do understand how frustrating this has been but please let me assure you I personally do not accept this level of service for our guests and would like to apologise on behalf of the team as this has clearly been a bad experience. "Overnight stay for local wedding"

3
Eileen K, Glasgow, United Kingdom 22/05/2016

Reception not very welcoming. We had requested early check-in at 1pm to change for 2 pm wedding. Receptionist had no knowledge of this, although eventually managed to accommodate us. Attempted a snack lunch of sandwich and coffee. This took 35 minutes to appear leaving us unable to finish it. Cost was excessive. Room was adequate although on the cold side. This hotel, although ideally situated for golfers is certainly not value for money for other travellers and I would not repeat the experience.

"Beautiful room with a view"

katherinekai, Easton, Maryland 18/05/2016

The hotel is nicely place with lovely views. Ask for a room with a view of the sea. The Junior Suite was spacious and comfortable. Little things were amiss like: dirty glasses in bathroom, dirty shower curtain, missing towel racks, etc. However the overall comfort of the room and convenience to golf and town were very special.

In St Andrews for a golfing break, this hotel is so close to the action - about 200 yds from the first tee box for the Old Course! Center of town a few mins easy walk away. Staff v friendly, rooms fine and free parking outside. Nothing not to like.

"Room fab... Food disappointing!!"

User 17/05/2016

Lovely big room, nice big comfortable bed, large tv. Fresh bright on suite. However restaurant disappointing Arbroath smokies with mac cheese, runny lacked fish, taste & flavour. Waitress lacked experience and knlowedge not offered bread or side dishes. Another table walked out due to no steak, plus they waited 1hr for bread, plus they got all their drinks mixed up. Breakfast was nice, box standard but nice. Great view!!

Dear Ssdaz, Thank you for taking the time to communicate your views on the hotel via the Trip Advisor site. please accept my personal apologies dinner was not up to the standard I would have expected, this in itself is a work in progress along with the entire service in our restaurant. "Location, location, location- just PERFECT"

5
Steve S, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, United States 12/05/2016

Needed one night accommodations for our trip through St. Andrews. Just off the Old Course and adjacent to the Royal and Ancient Club, this property was perfect. Room was very spacious with a queen bed and two large window facing easy chairs. Bathroom was average but certainly acceptable. Location was just feet from the 18th green of the Old Course and in the heart of shopping area.

KenLaird1961, Glasgow, United Kingdom 09/05/2016

Went here for a romantic overnighter and was delighted to be upgraded on arrival by delightful lady on reception. The room was lovely with great views over the beach and parts of the famous Old Course. Breakfast was hit and miss, I say this as I enjoyed it but my partner didnt think the same. Only down side for me was lack of atmoshpere in a very overpriced bar. I wet down for a drink whilst waiting on my partner getting ready and was quoted £27.50 for an average bottle of prosecco, which was far to much. I went to local Tesco and got a perfectly decent one for £18 less.

"Relying on its location"

3
mccullochsev, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 03/05/2016

Stayed over the holiday weekend, with the golfing season in full flow so should be no excuses. Several positives. Location is awesome. Rooms are mixture of good and spacious in twin, to okay but a little small in double. Reception staff very welcoming and efficient. But a few negatives too. Breakfast very poor. Few staff and most of the buffet constantly running out. Even the ordered specials didn't match the description. And finally a bar that according to staff 'only opens when it's busy!' Not quite sure how you gauge busy if it isn't open? Overall, needs to be taken for what it is, average.

Stayed here for 2 nights over the bank holiday weekend. It was OK, but when you took into account the price and the service it was very disappointing. Our room was very small and the bathroom was basic. The staff were not especially friendly and certainly not welcoming. Surely St Andrews can offer something better for the price !!

Stayed overnight at hotel, check in was great, room lovely, clean and comfy however room was Cold at night and in morning. Breakfast not good, one person doing everything in dining room, serving clearing and keeping buffet stocked. Bacon you couldn't cut, beans were cold, potato scone was brick hard. "Great location - Great hospitality"

mcrossan2016, London, Canada 30/04/2016

We loved the location with the first tee of the old course just outside the hotel doors. We had to pinch ourselves every time we walked out. Our room #200 faced the water and the course and the windows which were massive fostered a magnificent view. Parking was available outside the hotel on the street, and was generally available. In a week we had only one occasion where we couldn't find a spot right away. The breakfast was served in a wonderful lounge with beautiful views as well. The staff were warm, friendly and helpful.

Stayed for 1 night, with work, nice tidy hotel, only saw 1 member of staff but polite. Room a bit dated but clean, had everything you would expect, good quality tea making facilities. Bed comfortable, I slept well. Very limited car parking, I had to park in a public car park, having to pay as well. I left before breakfast due to work commitments so I can't review that. Would stay here again.

"Great location, tartan decor!"

3
donaldwhislop, Nottingham, United Kingdom 29/04/2016

I stayed here recently on business, while attending a conference. I am also Scottish, so being a Scot staying their on business means I am not the target clientele! I presume due to the tartan themed decor everywhere that golf tourists are the main client base. a superb location, overlooking golf course and west beach. Staff were also very friendly and helpful. Facilities in room were excellent. As a vegetarian I found the standard cooked buffet breakfast options a little disappointing, and quite limited. I am sure I could have probably ordered something from kitchen , but was a little time limited, so didn't ask.

This hotel is a great option if you are looking for a clean, comfortable room with a great shower. It has all of the services you might need and the staff is very helpful. Breakfasts are very good too. It is also located in a great location for people visiting St Andrews.

Awesome location for playing SAOC -none closer. Dated facilities leave some things to be desired: lift out of order, telly missing channels, heating spotty,.. Staff goes out of its way to accommodate the facilities shortcomings. Overall, a pleasant stay made possible by the staff.

My friend and I have just returned from an overnight in St Andrews. Our stay in the Scores hotel was marvellous. Great room good breakfast helpful staff and the view from the dining room is the best you can get. Much better than the 3 star rating. Wouldn't stay anywhere else as its so central.

"St. Andrews best value hotel"

This hotel sits overlooking the firth and adjacent to the Rand A clubhouse . Flexible booking system. Good sized rooms helpful staff and above all for St Andrews their own private car park . Difficult to beat enjoying a leisurely breakfast looking out over the firth and then a quiet stroll onto the first tee at the old course . Heaven!

"Short Stay"

JoeMrp, Glasgow, United Kingdom 14/04/2016

Had a couple of days off so thought we would head to St.Andrews. Having stayed in a few Great Western hotels I selected the Scores and I was slightly disappointed. When we arrived at the hotel reception to check in the area at the front desk was littered with luggage and golf bags which does not give a good impression not to mention it is the area leading to the front door. We went to the grill bar for a spot of lunch again disappointed as we had to go and ask for someone to take our order as we had been sitting for 15 mins when someone did arrive to take our order of soup of the day "board read Carrot & Coriander with crusty bread" only to be told that was yesterday's soup today it is Tomato. Tried to order another three items from the menu to no avail as we were told that food delivery had not arrived yet, by now it is 1:30pm settled for ham toasties. This service made our mind to go out for our evening meal The room we were allocated room 205 was spotless and the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was well stocked with plenty of quality towels. The hotel bar facilities were very poor as we came back from our evening meal at 10:00pm only to find it closed. The breakfast in the morning was at best average as the food was lukewarm Positive points are the room, location and staff Negatives Food, bar facilities and atmosphere

"Golf St. Andrews "

User 14/04/2016

Fantastic location in a beautiful town. Ideal for golfers and other tourists. 3 minute walk to the first hole on the Old Course. Was upgraded to a junior suite which was quite large with very comfortable beds. The staff especially the reception staff where very friendly. That is all the good points. The only downside is that the rooms and the breakfast area where very hot and uncomfortable at times. The breakfast had a wide menu with a full breakfast where you served yourself. Unfortunately if you wanted anything else you had to wait quite a while. The last morning I asked for duck eggs with bread up soldiers. After a good 20 minutes they arrived but it seemed they had still got there tin helmets on as they were overcooked. I would have complained but could not have afforded the time. Overall a friendly hotel.

Perfect position to access St Andrews golf at a very reasonable rate for such a popular venue. Staff were really friendly, polite and knowledgeable and the Scottish Breakfast set us up for the day perfectly. Pity the lift was out of order as we were on the 3rd floor, ouch!

"Great location"

4
rustybs, lincolnshire 13/04/2016

Stayed at the scores for two nights on a golf break. Got upgraded toa junior suite which was great although we didnt get the sea views at the back of the hotel. However the old course is literally yards from the front of the hotel, you can actually watch people teeing off from the restaurant so for golfers it was ideal. Breakfast was good with a nice selection of a,la carte items to compliment the usual breakfast fare. It can be a bit of a wait but worth it if youve got time. All in all a decent place with a great location for the views the golf and the town.

"University visit"

4
hhearing, Oakham, United Kingdom 13/04/2016

Friendly hotel. It's not new but it's all there and it's clean. This isn't a bad thing. The room was amazing. The bed was very comfy and breakfast was good. They looked after our luggage after check out whilst we looked at the University. It was no bother. They did stop serving dinner at 8:30 pm which I found strange as the train got in at 7:45 pm. Still I managed a wonderful fish and chips. All in all the Scores Hotel is good value for money and a great location for either the golf or the University.

"Golf trip staying at the Score"

Steve C, London, United Kingdom 12/04/2016

Although I had booked for the Junior suite, I did mention these were for twin beds, the rooms were both setup with double beds. However, this was rectified after a phone call. The rooms were excellent, with plenty of room and a nice sitting area. The breakfast was somewhat disappointing, on each of the three days I had to ask for the fruit and fruit juices to be replenished. Some of the cooked breakfast seemed to have been left in the hot plates for rather a long time, therefore, making it hard to eat. Two of the four only eat breakfast on the first morning, going out to a local café and paying for a decent breakfast. Would recommend due to the location and size of the suite, but try for a bed only basis.

"Great location and views"

Pageo68, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 03/04/2016

Whilst the hotel is a little tired its location and views are 2nd to none. Our room was very large and had everything we needed but the decor was in need of a few touch ups including the corridors and random furniture that seemed to be placed in them. Breakfast was very good and catered for everything.

"Disappointed"

TrippinMonkey, Sydney, Australia 03/04/2016

We stayed for one night and were disappointed in the room. It was very small and the bed was uncomfortable. The bathroom was in desperate need of an upgrade. The room was overpriced for what it was. The location was good and the room overlooked the water and it was possible to see the golf course. There were restaurant options within walking distance.

The Scores Hotel is wondeful:located opposite the sea and close to the golf course; excellent position for a walk in the city centre or the beach. Very well designed, comfortable rooms, good breakfast ( perhaps this could be improved!).Nice atmosphere of an old boy - school!

"A little bit dissapointed"

4
grcampbell2, Hawick, United Kingdom 23/03/2016

My husband and I have stayed at this hotel on several occasions and have always been impressed with the standard and cleanliness of the rooms. We arrived on the Friday, staying to the Sunday and on our arrival were delighted to be upgraded to a suite. The suite was amazing, a large bedroom with a very comfy bed, a large sitting room overlooking the beach and the 1st tee. There was also a separate bathroom which was also to a high standard. Unfortunately the only thing that spoiled our weekend was breakfast on the Sunday morning. Breakfast on the Saturday morning was cooked to order and arrived hot and tasty, however Sundays breakfast was a buffet style which was luke warm, tasteless and not very edible. We would stay at the hotel again but don't know if we would have breakfast on a Sunday unless it improves.

"Fantastic Relaxing Break"

5
mammab2000, Perth, United Kingdom 23/03/2016

Just returned from a most relaxing weekend at the Scores, having stayed before the seaview rooms are amazing, staff very helpful and efficient shame my stay couldn't last longer. They seem to have a new Chef and dinner was amazing, good breakfast choice did need to be topped up faster but it was a busy breakfast time so to be expected really. Will be back again soon definitely recommended.

"Not what it used to be"

ColinTheWriter, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 22/03/2016

As a returning visitor to this well-located and previously well-run hotel, and a satisfied customer of several of Best Western's hotels around the country, I was left somewhat dismayed to see the drop in standards since my last visit to The Scores. The issues that myself and my fiance were faced with are borne from genuine concerns that this hotel is simply not what it used to be. Neither of us are particularly hard to please, which is what makes the downfall of this once spectacular hotel even worse. Particular areas of concern that might be addressed by the management are: - Uncomfortable and lumpy double beds that slope towards the middle. My back is still sore. - En-suite bathrooms that are desperately in need of upgrade to the 21st Century. - No bars in the hotel are open on a Friday evening. Is 10.30pm an unreasonable hour to have a night-cap? - The only drinks (alcoholic or otherwise) available at this time were only available on a Room Service charge, despite us being guests. - A 40-minute wait for our cooked breakfasts on the Saturday morning in an almost empty dining room. Thank goodness Sundays are buffet self-service day. From this visit I could not possibly recommend the Best Western Scores Hotel to anyone wishing to stay in St Andrews any longer, and nor will I be back. It is over-priced, uncomfortable, and not amenable to a relaxing weekend as a result. There are plenty of other places that meet the standards one would expect from the price paid in such a beautiful town. Unfortunately, the BW Scores isn't one of them.

Walking along The Scores (after which the hotel is named) is rather like being transported back into the 1920's (in the nicest possible sense) past the Monument and the Bandstand, all within sight of the beach. And, on first impressions, that's exactly how the hotel feels. Surrounded (at the back) it feels very much like a sanctuary. A good place to hold a Special Gathering; a fine menu, and well worth a stay!.

This hotel worked out very well for our family visit. Great views and location. The hotel front desk staff assisted us by storing our luggage for the day while we explored the town. Our only complaint was that the hotel was very warm overnight. We ended up opening a window to make it more comfortable.

My wife and I have stayed three times at this hotel which located overlooking the sea and the golf course. We had a junior suite with a sea view. the room was commodious, comfortable and well furnished. The staff were friendly and efficient.

I stayed at the Scores for 1 night at start of March. Great welcome from the staff, checking in was quick and easy and the room was excellent. Very large and well decorated. There are a few sets of steps to take into account but this was fine for me. I had a room on the front overlooking the beach which had great views morning and evening. It gets a bit windy turning the corner onto The Scores but I just took that as a nice aerobic workout. Breakfast was great, even served haggis,. My only 'complaint' was it has very limited parking and this seemed to be used up by the staff. If the Scores itself is full, it's a bit of a trek from the nearest free parking.

"Beautiful view"

Sallyhutchison2001, Forres, United Kingdom 07/03/2016

Staff were punctual and helpful during my arrival and regarding my parking. The room was available promptly and well maintained with decor and soft furnishings. Bathroom large and to high standard. The staff were available for simple advice on things to do ans visit. Also the lower bar was closed as out of season but the regular bar was open and the staff happy to let you sit quietly enjoying the view and to read. Central location and would recommend a return trip. I will revisit soon.

"Helpful staff and great location."

I only stayed for one night and arrived very late - kudos to the staff for making sure I don't go to sleep hungry! Everything else worked well and there were no problems with my stay. Golf and food both close. Recommended.

"Modest Hotel with North Sea Views"

4
Westcoastboy181, Reykjavik, Iceland 29/02/2016

Location, location, location. The hotel has water views, is close to the university, shops/restaurants and the famous golf course. The rooms are ok but having a sea view makes up for the indifferent furnishings. But clean and comfortable. They do a decent Full Scottish but the choices for the continental breakfast leaves something to be desired.

Scott D, Dundee, United Kingdom 29/02/2016

Nice hotel with fantastic views of the Old Course and St Andrews bay however it had a bit of a Marie Celeste feel about it. We checked in at 4:30pm and hoped to have a quick drink before changing for the evening but there was no staff on the bar. Asking at reception didn't help as we couldn't get an answer as to when the bar would open. We went to a nice wee pub around the corner instead. The room was spacious and comfortable and we had a good night's sleep. The views from our room were stunning. Bonus was the free parking outside the hotel and it's only a 5-10 minute stroll into the centre of town. Would visit again but not in Jan/Feb

A great weekend at the Scores; fabulous location with views over the West Sands and the R&A Clubhouse. Staff were very competent and friendly. Rooms were large and comfortable. Shower was OK, but barely warm in early evening when all guests were getting ready for dinner. At other times water was hot.

"Good location, reasonable hotel."

Boondoggler, Moray, Scotland 20/02/2016

The scores is in a great location close to the golf courses with lovely views to the sea. It's also 5 minutes walk to the main streets with shops, pubs and restaurants. All St. Andrews hotels are expensive so difficult to say it was good value, but probably fair for the town. My room was spacious, well appointed and had a nice view to the front. Breakfast was adequate, though the views from the breakfast room were great. All staff were friendly and helpful.

My girlfriend and I ate and drank here (The Scores) during a driving golf/distillery holiday of Scotland/Ireland in August 2015. It is across the road and a few meters up the hill opposite the St. Andrews club house. While the bar area was nice and cosy, we elected to order and enjoy our food/drink out the front tables where we could enjoy the views of the St. Andrews 1st and 18th holes.

A very good hotel in a perfect position, overlooking the beach and links, the room was spacious and well equipped, the shower was good and powerful. The breakfast was nicely cooked just let down by being dished onto a small plate, overall it was a great stay at a very reasonable price for the quality of the hotel

Hotel staff very helpful when we asked to move room to a higher level for a better view. Hotel is in a great location with easy access to golf course and the beach. Rooms are large and the hotel is very nice with friendly staff. We shall definitely go back to the hotel when we visit St Andrews next.

Stayed here for one night while working in the area, what a great hotel, friendly and helpful staff, did have dinner in the restaurant and the food was amazing, full of flavour, great presentation and good value. Worth asking for a room with a Seaview what a view!! housekeeping can improve slightly though. Will definitely be back.

"Great weekend destination"

Sue C, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 27/01/2016

When calling to book a room in order to ask for a sea view, my husband was offered an upgrade to a suite as it was my 50th birthday. The staff were so friendly and helpful. They even left a birthday card for me, which was a nice touch. The room was lovely and had the views we had hoped for .The en-suite was spotlessly clean. Breakfasts were plentiful. It was ideally situated for the beach or the town. Highly recommend a visit to Scores. Thank you Scores.

"Shocking Christmas Dinner"

1
Billcor691, St. Andrews, United Kingdom 25/01/2016

We decided not to cook Christmas dinner this year and leave it all to the professionals..... how wrong could we be! Our family of three, Myself, my partner Jackie, our son Ethan and my partners parents booked a table at the above 4/5 weeks ago, £55 per head, not overly expensive for the setting we thought. Its actually the first time in my life (53) I have went out for Christmas dinner and I can totally assure anyone reading this that it will be the last. What a shambles, we arrived half an hour early thinking we would enjoy a pre dinner drink, NO... only one small bar open with nobody serving!! 10-15 minutes later we eventually get our drink and at that point we were told we can go and sit at our table... fine we think, NO! We were shown down the stairs into a large brightly lit room with probably 2-300 people where our table for FIVE was waiting for us.... around 10 steps from the foot of the stairs and almost right at the Kitchen service door...PERFECT! THE TABLE!! Obviously crammed in at the last minute (bearing in mind we had booked weeks ago) FIVE in our party being sitted at a very small table that would barely fit FOUR, two on each side and one on the end, all fully equipped for every eventuality.... enough knives, forks and spoons for 4 courses, 5 wine glasses, 5 water glasses, water jug, 5 cups, 5 saucers (NO TEASPOONS) 5 side plates with 5 knives, milk jug, sugar bowl, salt and pepper (our salt was empty) 5 crackers.....oh and they WERE crackers indeed, no expense spared!!!! Inside 5 crackers were 3 sets of plastic shiny golf tees and 1 dice in the other two, between the 5 crackers there was the same joke in 3 and the same joke in the other 2... like I said, they were CRACKERS! Within a few minutes of being seated our waiter arrived with the menu, we had to pick all courses there and then from one A4 sheet of paper which he held on to... obviously there was no room on the table for individual menu's! No wine was offered at any point of the meal... again probably because there was no where to put it on the table... I really wish I had taken my phone for a pic! Starters arrive fairly quick for three, none for myself and Ethan, we went straight to the soup which arrived at the same time... fine. Jackies dad was having the starter and soup which we eventually managed to get when everyone else was sitting finished theirs! Main course, two pieces of turkey and one round of sausage meat in gravy, one pig in blanket and one small piece of bacon filled with greenbeans, the veg was pretty sparse (3 sprouts and a few carrot battens) and only 3 small roast tatties. NO mashed tatties, NO stuffing, NO bread sauce, NO parsnips, allthough I could go on, these are things I would normally associate with a traditional Christmas dinner ? At some point we had asked for more drinks.... and then we asked again.... and for a third time we asked and yes we finally got our SECOND drink in almost 2 hours.... wasn't much point going to the bar as there was no one serving most of the time! Sweets arrived and then the tea's/coffees ( I stirred my coffee with a knife) we finished quickly and left. What can I say... It was without a doubt THE worst Christmas meal I have ever had, THE worst Christmas experience I have ever had which all took place in a very dismal hall with NO atmosphere, NO background music, NO Christmas tree that I could see and to top it all, it cost £300 with the two drinks each that we eventually managed to get !!! It appeared to be totally under staffed with NO management in sight Thanks BEST WESTERN Scores Hotel, we wont be back.

"Not fit for Champions"

1
User 12/01/2016

Nice hotel but convinced Mr Faulty is lurking somewhere! Food at Champions Bar definitely NOT fit for champions... Appalling! Now I know a black and blue burger should be blackened but with spices not burned and dried out to within an inch of its life, cold chips, warm coleslaw and when asked what red wine they had by the glass I was informed Rose! When I explained to the waiter this was not red wine. He said oh no neither it is, well I think you just have to buy a full bottle of red if we haven't already got a bottle opened! A wait of 30mins for a burger when only two other diners is also poor, but I guess maybe it takes that long to so overlook something! when questioned it was explained that there was a Rotary function on so the chef was under pressure! Really? Surely if you know you have function you staff up accordingly. Will definitely eat out for the rest of this stay, shame as the Champion grill has most probably the best location and view over the famous Chariots of Fire beach

PMDGlasgow, Glasgow 05/01/2016

We stayed here between Christmas and New Year, so we had a fair deal for B&B and the hotel was very quiet. We got upgraded to a Junior Suite with a rear view, but unfortunately on arrival the restaurant was closed owing to a gas problem so we had to find somewhere else for dinner. The room was warm, but unfortunately the bathroom radiator didn't work; this was reported next morning but remained cold throughout our stay. The beds were comfortable and tea/coffe making provision was fine, though unfortunately it was not refreshed on our second day. Breakfasts in the Champions Lounge were good, with hot food freshly prepared, and we were able to dine there the next evening. Unfortunately the menu was rather limited and we ended up with good old fish and chips, while the Alexanders Restaurant and the main bar remained closed throughout our stay. The hotel is very well located, across the road from the Royal & Ancient golf clubhouse and a few minutes from the famous West Sands, with the town centre shops and amenities a short stroll away. Parking outside can be competitive and the bays are tight, but at that time of year we had no real problem. So, a hotel with lots of potential and pleasant staff but let down by lack of attention to detail - disappointingly average overall.

"Very chilly"

3
MoiraMcF, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 01/01/2016

We stayed for one night, Hogmanay, and arrived at 2.30pm on a cold day to a very chilly room. I called reception to tell them and was informed that the heating would come on at 4pm! On the 31st of December! It could only happen in Scotland. We are Scottish and used to cooler weather but were still astounded at this attitude. Obviously trying to save money.... The receptionist, who had been very pleasant at check in, agreed to put the heating on but it took a good couple of hours for the heat to build up. Quite a good hotel but maybe best to stay in warmer months, it's miserable being cold and this will be my lasting memory.

"Christmas Lunch at The Scores - A Tale of Two Halves"

3
DundeeBridie, Scotland, United Kingdom 26/12/2015

The Scores has a fabulous location overlooking the West Sands in St.Andrews. In view of this, it was a pity that we were seated in the large function room at the back of the hotel - however, with the numbers involved it was perfectly understandable. However, a little bit of tinsel would not have gone amiss as, apart from a couple of crackers on the tables, there was nothing to else in the room to show it was Christmas. We both had the trio of Seafood to start which was delicious, the piping hot vine tomato soup was equally lovely however we weren't offered any bread rolls unlike the other tables. When I asked for bread, meaning the little rolls, I was given a plate of pan bread and sachets of butter. The main course arrived which for me was herb encrusted salmon and for my husband, ribeye steak. What I tasted of the salmon was lovely but it was underdone and raw in the middle so had to leave most of it. There was no sign of the seared scallops or the lobster sauce which were supposed to accompany the salmon. As well as the other veg I was given 2 very small roast potatoes - pretty disappointing overall. By contrast, my husband's rib eye steak was completely overdone, very dry and the Bearnaise sauce looked as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp for quite a while. For dessert, my husband had a chocolate brownie and a blob of ice-cream while opted for the "Selection of Scottish Cheeses and Oatcakes" - I received stilton and cheddar and a mixture of biscuits. In short, pretty disappointing overall compared to other Christmas Lunch/Dinners we have had out in previous years so won't be celebrating Christmas at the Scores again. All that aside, the waiting staff were marvellous. Chatty, friendly and everything delivered and whisked away very efficiently.

eli-k72, Scotland 21/12/2015

We picked this hotel for the location and were not disappointed. The room was very nice, but cold and we had to ask them to turn the heating on. Also the bath tap came away in our hands and we couldn't turn the running water off. This was repaired when we went out for the evening. We didn't have breakfast, so cannot comment on that. During check out they tried to charge us for a phone call we hadn't made!! The worrying part is 4 weeks later on checking my bank statement. That despite having pre paid on a travel site they had charged me again, but much more!! When I called them, it was denied at first, but later they realised the "mistake". I received no apology and am still waiting on the GM to contact me (3 days later!!) If you do decide to stay here, make sure you check your statements.....you maybe charged twice!!!!!

"Great convenient location"

"Massive improvements recently"

4
User 16/12/2015

Held off writing this review as last year they dropped the ball with a Christmas party we attended here. There were assurances that no such problems would occur if we gave them another chance and I must say they really did redeem themselves last week. Last year there was clearly a personnel crisis with slow and clueless staff but this year all staff were friendly, knowledgable and well turned out. The rooms were excellent; large and clean, but you enter the rooms with the radiators turned off so you must remember to turn them on if its cold outside! Food and drink was good in the evening and the following morning. They were clearly a little understaffed at breakfast though. We were in no hurry so it didn't matter to us. One of the waitresses reminded me of the Butler from the video game, Tomb Raider 2! So The Scores has scored and we'll almost certainly be back for more next year.

"Fabulous first stay at the Scores"

5
Liz M, Glasgow, United Kingdom 14/12/2015

Warm and welcoming, with staff to match. A beautiful spacious, spotless, sea view room, perfect. A stunning view and two very restful sleeps in a room with two double beds. Very very comfortable. Tried the full Scottish breakfast and eggs benedict for breakfast, thoroughly enjoyed both. Again, the staff at breakfast were very attentive and friendly. Really couldn't ask for more or fault the hotel in any way. Will definitely return.

"Great location for exploration"

4
NomadicKiwi1, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 11/12/2015

We stayed here for two nights and found it was a great base for exploring the Castles, Abbeys and Coastline of the surrounding area. It was a short walk to the bars, restaurants and shops of St Andrews with the Old Course, Beach and University Campus only 5 minutes away. Our room was comfortable and quiet and the included breakfast included a lot of good cooked options. My only criticisms would be that the coffee included with breakfast did not taste good at all and the extra 1 pound requested to make a latte seemed bizarre and unnecessary. Also the staff were efficient but we didn't feel like any of them went the extra mile with their service, just going through the motions. Overall a great location and good value for money but could use a few tweaks to make it a brilliant place to stay.

"Excellent hotel"

User 08/12/2015

We had a beautiful room with a bay window and a sea view. The room itself had two double beds, a settee and two armchairs and an en-suite that was huge. The staff were very helpful. The breakfast was good and the service was great.

November in St Andrews and a feeling that it was closed for the winter.... Hotel seemed a good choice, and indeed all was perfectly adequate. Big room, comfortable bed, staff pleasant. Just seemed as if they were surprised at having guests in the hotel. DBB package was ok but not particularly good value for money. Had a definite 'end of a long seasonr' feel.

"Great location for playing Old Course"

5
barontj, clarendon hills il 16/11/2015

The hotel is steps from the Old Pavilion where you queue up if you are a single golfer hoping to get on. Closer than the Old Course hotel even. We were lucky enough to have a room facing the North Sea and the course. It could not have been more perfect.Everyone was welcoming. The room was large and well appointed. Would stay there again if lucky enough to return.

Our room was spacious, had two comfortable beds and two large armchairs facing a 40" flat screen TV. Breakfast was excellent with choices of eggs Benedict, Smoked salmon, scrambled eggs and all the usual full Scottish breakfast ingredients.

"Great place to stay!"

5
Steve M, Chelmsford, Massachusetts 02/11/2015

From the minute we walked into the reception area we felt very welcome and the staff was happy to see us. Great location, everything is clean, the food is good but it is the staff that makes it a special place. They went the extra mile on numerous occasions to satisfy our requests or needs. Our 4th time in St. Andrews and I will not stay in any other place.

"Wonderful Stay In A Wonderful Old-Style Hotel"

5
Graham S, Aberdeen, Scotland, United Kingdom 02/11/2015

We have just returned to Aberdeen from a weekend in St. Andrews staying at the Scores. What a wonderful weekend! We actually booked through Tripadvisor and scored (no pun intended) an excellent rate but we really SCORED with the room!! It was huge and beautiful with a breathtaking view over St, Andrews Bay. Thank you Scores for giving us such an excellent room we were totally taken aback - my partner even started taking pictures of it as soon as we entered ! We really enjoyed everything about our stay there. The room was clean and warm with a very large comfortable bed and a good shower and good facilities for an old traditional hotel such as this. The Chariots Bar is a lovely atmospheric spot to enjoy a drink. We ate in the restaurant both nights and were very happy with the menu and our choices. The staff are all lovely and helpful making the service first-class. The location is amazing just behind the Old Course at St. Andrews and only a few minutes walk fro the town centre.. St. Andrews is really lovely by the way. Although the hotel has no dedicated parking there we found no difficulty finding one of the many spaces (which are free) on either side of the very quiet street outside of the hotel. We can honestly say we had an excellent weekend stay here, can highly recommend The Scores, and we will definitely be back. Many thanks to the hotel and staff

Lovely hotel with excellent service. Room was quiet and very comfortable. Great breakfast with friendly staff. Lovely views of sea from restaurant window and part of the golf course. Would recommend this hotel even if you're not a golf fanatic!

"Heating didn't work, tried to overcharge twice!!!"

1
Noreen P, Dublin, Ohio 29/10/2015

This hotel is in a really good location, less than a minutes walk to the 18th green of the Old Course. However the lack of professionalism and any management presence lets the hotel down. When I checked they tried to charge £25 more than was quoted over the phone . Luckily I had a confirmation email to prove it. When we got to the room it was freezing cold. Turned on the heating in the bedroom&bathroom but neither worked. Phoned reception who sent up a young lad who told me heating was on a timer and if I wanted the heat on they woukd have to put it on for ALL of 2nd floor!! After lots of backwards&forward with reception there was no resolution. Breakfast was very mediocre and service was slow. When I went to check out they tried to charge £25 again, this time saying it was for breakfast. Once again I had to get the confirmation email to show breakfast was included. All in all a very bad experience one which I will never reapeat with Best Western again.

"Best Western Scores Hotel"

EJL52, London, United Kingdom 29/10/2015

Stayed here one evening, 27 Oct. We were given a suite-one room king bed & the other 2 singles. Very spacious-clean and comfortable. Service staff are very friendly and location is excellent just off the beach. Breakfast was ample and good. Room price is not cheap, but considering room size and that I believe that other hotel prices in St Andrews are similar, then fair value. Would stay again.

"Wonderful stay"

Lovely room, very spacious and reasonably priced. Staff were friendly, polite, helpful. Breakfast was ok, neither great nor poor, quite average. Not so good bits were the warm showers and closed bars! We didn't expect the bars to be closed on a Saturday evening, especially as we were not advised of that when we booked.

The Service was very good the room was clean and tidy the food was excellent, what we asked for we got. this is the forth time we have been back two of the people had not been before but loved everything about the hotel we are hoping to go back in2017

"Breathtaking view!!!"

4
brookville50, NI 25/10/2015

Very quaint and traditional hotel. Staff really friendly and helpful. We were lucky enough to have a room on the third floor overlooking the beach and the old course. I can only say if you can get a similar room you'll love it. The view was spectacular and almost didn't look real! The room itself was clean with plenty of room along with a seating area. Tv good size and a radio also in the room. The only problems were the cold tap in the sink was awful to turn on and I only got a dribble to brush my teeth and wash hands. Easy for hotel to rectify. Shower wasn't a power shower and I did miss that and lastly the loo flush buttons seem a bit ineffective. All in all good value for money and nothing could have taken away from our view so I would return without hesitation.

Mrodger, Motherwell, United Kingdom 24/10/2015

We stayed here as a party of 6 to attend a wedding in the old course. Wish we had paid the extra and stayed elsewhere. At. £300 for 2 nights it was definitely not worth it. Small double bed which was fairly comfortable. We stayed in room 212. Gorgeous view so cannot fault that....... That is the only positive! Complimentary bottle of water in your room....fantastic! If the guests before us hasn't drank half of it! Reported this and wasn't replaced whilst we were out. Both myself and my partner stood on small bits of broken glass in the room. Reported thousand again nothing done as stood on another piece. The shower is the worst shower I have ever seen. The water jets went every direction. So much so that when I put my hand directly under it it was dry! The tiles are grubby and the ceiling has mould. Definitely in need of updating. The other bonus we had was the in room food. Someone had also kindly left a half eaten packet of crisps in a drawer! Another 2 in our party stayed in room 210. The dust was so thick in the room that it covered his boxer shorts.....the kind of later only found if the place hadn't been dusted in a long long time. Room 206 the chair fell apart when my partners dad sat on it! Breakfast was ok. It is what it is. Decent selection and the staff were all pleasant enough. BEST western? I think not! I would recommend this hotel for location but that is all. There are plenty other hotels beside it so I would definitely look into them. My partner spent both days with a really itchy nose and constantly sneezing. Since returning home no issues?!?! But after noting the cleanliness of the hotel it did leave us wondering. Never again for us!

"Scores makes triple bogey"

2
David W, Cranford, New Jersey 12/10/2015

Four of us stayed at Scores on a Scotland golf trip. The people there volunteered to submit our ballot to play The Old Course, failed to do so on two consecutive days and then told us they did submit the ballots. The R&A confirmed they did not. Otherwise it is a building with potential if someone invests several million pounds. The management is abysmal and the place is a mess

"Showers are a disaster"

2
David P, Camberley, United Kingdom 05/10/2015

Rooms are ok and breakfast very good. I stay here for company business year after year and do not have a choice in the hotel. If I did I would definitely not go back until they sort out their showers. Every year I complain and every year the staff acknowledge that they are poor and are always generating complaints and yet nothing is done. Basically in most rooms all you get is a dribble out of the shower and twice this year the water stopped completely during my shower. Last year I had to have the shower on for a good 15 minutes before any hot water came through in the mornings. Hope someone listens this year!!

"Visited this hotel for afternoon tea"

3
Sabina P, Cardiff, United Kingdom 27/09/2015

Hotel looked great, clean with Scottish and leather decor. Convenient location. A big disappointment to our tea with scones, clotted cream and jam. The scones were lumpy and difficult to swallow although they felt warm. There was no clotted cream. This was compensated by big pots of tea and extra hot water to top up! The view from the dining area was beautiful.

Good stay, enjoyed it. Arrived around 9pm and the kitchen was shut so went elsewhere for dinner which was fine. Wifi is strong!! The breakfast was brilliant with lovely views from the restaurant and the staff are very friendly.

"Great location, but over priced"

Much as you expect from Best Western. Our room overlooked the rear gardens!! Reception staff were organised however although we were advised that breakfast started serving at 7.30am (Sunday) it didn't; only one lovely waitress appeared to be trying to cover whilst the remainder of the staff appeared after 8am. The food was of a good quality and choice other than the hot buffet. PS. Great views of the beach from the Breakfast lounge BW Management; Please upgrade your beds, no one sleeps in doubles these days!

"Most relaxing 3 days"

Arrived and had a drama right away, which the excellent reception staff settled immediately leading to a tremendous stay. The room 214, had a fabulous view and was roomy and well furnished. Breakfast service was first class and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. All in all the hotel provided a good base for a relaxing stay in Saint Andrews.
