Sure Hotel Collection
A lovely location for exploring the Sherborne area. Very quiet but within minutes of the main road into or around Sherborne. Plenty of parking. Good standard of food and wine/ I had breakfast and dinner x 2. Comfortable spacious room- I had a deluxe.
We have just returned from a lovely short break at the Grange. The hotel is charming and comfortable. We stayed in the accessible room and it was perfect for my disabled husband. Jenny, Jon and all the staff were welcoming and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. This is now our favourite hotel and we'll definitely return for another visit.
Large room with all the facilities I needed. Room was spotless and I felt safe with all the Covid measures they had taken. Housekeeping is not provided at the moment to reduce contact. It had underfloor heating, I think, so the room was nice and toasty. Very quiet location close by to picturesque Sherborne for shops etc. I slept well, although the mattress and pillow felt like they were nearing the end of their life in room 8. Staff very welcoming and friendly in all areas. I left some items behind in the room and they went to the trouble of posting these to my home address :) Very good breakfast included in my rate. Extensive hot and cold menu. Thank you for the pre-lockdown break. I would happily stay here again!
Everyone was friendly, very professional and COVID aware. The bedrooms were not entered by staff during our stay which was very reassuring, we just kept it tidy, normally do anyway. Comfortable lounge with fire and nicely appointed dining room.
This hotel is very covid compliance and we did not feel at risk. Small friendly hotel. Beautiful, quiet and comfy room. Bed was very good and we had a great undisturbed night sleep. We found the food of a high quality for a hotel. Extremely happy.
The Grange has all the efficiency of a large hotel set in a family run hotel in a beautiful setting. Clean, comfortable, peaceful, with an excellent restaurant. Nothing is too much trouble for the friendly staff. Would gladly stay there again.
We had a thoroughly enjoyable and relaxing break at The Grange. It was our second visit and more than lived up to our expectations. Our room was clean and well equipped. We felt adequate Covid precautions were in place. The hotel is well located for visiting Dorset and Somerset. Would definitely recommend.
The Grange are very well prepared for the current difficult situation. All staff and guests wear masks in public areas. The rooms are not being serviced during your stay, which means that no-one but you enters. We wonder if this might be a choice people can make in the future as it was quite nice not to have to 'tidy up' all the time! It is a sweet country house hotel, situated in a lovely little village. The staff were polite and helpful and we had a very pleasant stay.
This is a lovely hotel, with the best of service from charming staff. The hotel is spotlessly clean, the rooms are comfortable, the food delicious. Guests are made to feel totally relaxed and welcome.
What a lovely treat to spend an evening at The Grange, I only wish we'd booked to stay longer! A super welcome, charming staff, a delightful room and delicious food. What more could you want! Thanks, we'll be back!
Amazing staff. Had a family emergency and they changed dates and pushed back the reservation and were very flexible. We even got a room upgrade. Very kind! Lovely large spacious rooms, extra touches, delish coffee and tea, beautiful balcony overlooking garden and surrounds. Beautiful setting if you want peace and quiet and the restaurant will cater for all your breakfast and dinner needs!
We have enjoyed dinner here several times before but this time followed up with an overnight stay to celebrate a very special occasion. Our room was quirky but magnificent, with a comfortable, wide 4 poster bed, lovely views of two aspects of the spacious garden and patio doors giving access to a large, wisteria-fringed sitting-out area, which would be so enjoyable and relaxing in warm weather. Our dinner was full of delicious tastes and was of the high standard we have come to expect of this quaint old venue, and the service as pleasant and discreet as always. Our one disappointment came with the quality of the breakfast: my full English was artistically presented but the effect and the taste were spoiled by the bacon, which was tough (presumably because it had been pre-cooked and kept warm) and excessively greasy. My wife's disappointment came with her croissant, which was beautifully crisp on the outside but doughy and chewy in the middle. Such a shame that an otherwise perfect stay should be impaired by such small but unnecessary inadequacies. We were interested to see what adjustments had been made throughout the premises to take account of the government guidelines on anti-Covid measures and felt completely safe.
First time stay at this hotel, extremely impressed. Room good - clean and good standard of furnishings. Food excellent - dinner well above typical 3 star hotel standard. Would certainly stay again if ever in this area.
Nothing too much trouble for the always friendly staff. Fine Dining Restaurant, but still with informal friendliness. A super three day stay - very much looking forward to going back. Recommend this hotel to all my friends.
Came here for a couple of nights break to get away from the noise where I live. It was blissfully quiet, and the only traffic I saw in the morning were the ducks crossing the road to the river. Wonderful room with lovely balcony over the garden. Fantastic dinner brought to my room. Highly recommend. COVID measures all in place for a very reassuring stay. Spent most of the time in my room working or out walking so didn't see many staff, but those I did were very friendly and welcoming. I will certainly be back if I need another break and will recommend to others. Thank you.
We enjoyed a super one night stay and wished we had booked for longer! The welcome was special and everything from the rooms to the bar and dinner and breakfast just spot on. Everything 'covid' was dealt with carefully but without intrusion. my 88 year old mother was comfortable with it all
Lovely 3 night break with good food wine is a little bit expensive but the rooms are comfortable. Sherborn is beautiful an only 1 1/2 miles away with a lovely Cathedral well worth a visit, the town is very quant.
We stayed just one night in September. Room was spacious, well equipped and good bathroom. The restaurant was excellent. Great food and friendly and efficient staff. We had confit duck leg for main and dessert was delicious.
Lovely stay at The Grange, nice location - quiet, peaceful, felt very safe and staff polite, courteous. Our third visit and we'll definitely return. Lots to do in the near area. Sherborne Castle & Gardens worth visiting as is the nearby garden centre. National Trust Montacute House great and the house is open which was a lovely surprise.
A family run hotel providing excellent service, quality of food and value for money. Our room was well furnished with a wet room plus bath. All very covid safe. A full breakfast menu was available, all waiter service. The evening menu gave choice for all 3 courses and a full wine list. Plenty of parking. As it is built on a slight hill access from the parking end of the building was almost stair free to the first floor. We enjoyed our chats with the owner. It is our most favourite Best Western so far and we will definitely have it on our list when we visit the south west again. The hotel is on a quiet country lane so it is peaceful and quiet at night. A wonderful 3 night stay.
We wanted to combine a weekend away in Dorset with a family tree tracking mission. Needing to be near to Sherborne and Yeovil for our investigations we chose The Grange at Oborne as our base. Tucked away on the edge of the pretty village of Oborne, very rural, transport essential, we could not have chosen a better location. We are mature travellers and prefer hotels with history and character. When we arrived, we were made to feel very welcome and it was explained to us that under covid-19 rules there would be minimal contact e.g. no use of paper menus. Our spacious room overlooked the quiet front courtyard, with free car parking at the side of the hotel. We liked the aesthetic design of the furnishings in the room itself, particularly the huge sleigh bed. We made use of the ironing board and iron to remove wrinkles acquired on route before hanging our clothes in a wardrobe with plenty of hangers. Facilities to make tea or coffee in our room were enhanced by the addition of a seating area. The room was complimented by a modern bathroom, robes, slippers, and toiletries. The public areas of the hotel were quirky using old documentation and the history of the hotel (when it was two private dwellings) as areas of interest to adorn the walls. On both evenings we ate in the hotel restaurant and were not disappointed with the quality and presentation of the food. Breakfast was of an equal standard. The vegetarian options were not disappointing either. Everything was freshly cooked and well presented. Oborne itself is a short drive to Sherborne, which is an historic market town. We enjoyed nosing around the Saturday street market and delightfully different small shops. We were however disappointed not to be able to visit the Abbey and the Museum, once again due to Covid-19. We found all the staff at the hotel very friendly and accommodating and we would not hesitate to recommend The Grange to anyone who was thinking of staying in the Sherborne and Yeovil area.
As always a wonderful stay cannot than you enough John and Jenny . The standard of hygiene in these unprecedented times was excellent as was the room and the dining in the excellent restaurant. Thankyou so much. Sue and Barry
We had a wonderful single-night stay at the Grange at Oborne. From pre-check-in to post-check-out the whole experience was excellent. It was the first time we had stayed at a hotel since Covid arrived in this country and the measures that had been put in place really made us feel safe. Breakfast was a particular highlight, with quality and quantity of food provided far exceeding our expectations!
Birthday treat for my brothers 75 birthday. He had room 4 with 4 poster bed and fabulous terrace overlooking the garden. Our room 12 also excellent with access to outside seating and the garden. The staff as always friendly and helpful and the food excellent Ellen's, both dinner and breakfast. I always have poached eggs and they sort out the good cooks. White properly cooked, runny yoke and no water on the plate. What more coulda girl ask?
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Hi, Thank you for such a fantastic review. It was lovely to welcome you back to The Grange. I will tell Liam that you liked his poached eggs! Happy Birthday to your brother! Jon & Jenny
Jenny and Johnathan are a vibrant couple who are nice to be around. Their own and their staff's thoroughly pleasant, professional and personally attentive manner make staying here a great experience. The food was delicious and well prepared. Both the breakfast and evening dinner choices were varied ( we had the lamb with apricots - super! ). Generally the ambience was pleasant and relaxing - a gem of a place tucked away in the countryside, yet close to Sherborne and other interesting places. We would certainly stay again. No wonder it's so popular!
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Dear Sheileagh, Vibrant - we will definitely take that compliment, thank you! You would be very welcome to come and stay again. Jon & Jenny.
Obviously with the ongoing Covid-19 issues we were concerned about staying, especially as we have been shielding since the beginning of March (our daughter being extremely medically vulnerable). I soon realised I didn't need to be worried as the hotel are really on top of that. Masks were worn by all staff, social distancing was observed, cleanliness was second to none. The restaurant was really spaced out well. Windows and doors were open where possible and I did feel very safe, which I wasn't expecting. The Grange is a lovely old country hotel with beautiful gardens and views. It would make a perfect wedding venue (and indeed we did get married there last year!) but what makes The Grange so special to us (apart from the food - which is unbelievably good - recommend the pork belly -omg- and the goats cheese and onion jam!) is the staff. Jenny and Jon are the family owners and are amazingly welcoming and kind - perfect hosts! They even arranged for us to eat dinner outside (we were very lucky with the weather!) and we had an amazing anniversary candlelit dinner in the beautiful garden. So romantic! The staff work so hard to make sure guests feel welcome. Kirsty, and Teresa are lovely but all the staff play their part in this exceptionally well run and comfortable hotel. So we would like to say a big thank you to all the kitchen staff, bar and serving staff, housekeeping, and grounds keeping staff. I have no hesitation in recommending The Grange to anyone and highly recommend that you eat in the restaurant (you'll need to book this because it is deservedly very popular!) We stayed in room 4 which has a 4 poster bed and a large balcony with outdoor seating, the railings around are covered in wisteria. Lovely views of garden, and very quiet and relaxing. Perfect stay!
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Wowsers! That is a review and a half! Thank you so much for taking the time to write this and leave such a lovely review. We were very honoured that you choose to come to The Grange after spending so many months shielding. I am glad that you felt safe with us; so important for your family. Happy Anniversary, From all at The Grange
This country house hotel was an amazing find. Both the owners and the staff were amazing and extremely friendly nothing was too much trouble. The room was lovely and clean and all the measures put in place for what is an unusual time. We would not hesitate to recommend this Hotel and will certainly be returning for another stay.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Dear Chris, Thank you. We are very pleased that you felt safe whilst you were with us, and that you enjoyed your stay. Jon & Jenny
A gem....we arrived with two other family members, our first visit and certainly not the last! A genuinely warm welcome from Jon who ran through the Covid procedures before giving us our keys. After settling into our lovely room with large comfortable bed, sofa and chair,we met in the very pretty garden for a well earned cuppa! Dinner that night was beautifully presented, all courses were delicious. We will definitely be returning as one night was not enough!
We have just enjoyed two nights at this outstanding, privately run, hotel. The staff were attentive, always friendly and helpful but completely professional. Our room was quiet and comfortable and we had a view of the delightful garden where we enjoyed our evening pre-dinner drinks. But the absolute highlight was the dining room where we enjoyed superb food - some of the very best, and all beautifully prepared and served with the highest quality and freshest ingredients. The attention to our safety in these Covid days was of the highest and we already look forward to returning! I absolutely agree with everything written by janeydan60
We had a lovely 2 night stay at the hotel. Our room was comfortable and well equipped. The food was superb and all the staff were friendly and accommodating and made us feel relaxed. The safety measures in place for Covid are good. I was thrilled to see there was a collection of local history books, maps and walks that unfortunately due to Covid we were unable to borrow, but there are lots of nice touches to make this hotel stand out. I couldn't have had a nicer stay and would thoroughly recommend this hotel.
This was our first stay at The Grange and we were very impressed. It is a beautiful old country manor house, that has been converted to be a cosy, welcoming hotel in a beautiful part of Dorset. A short walk (or even shorter drive) to Sherborne, which is a beautiful old Abbey town and well worth a visit (the Castle gardens are stunning and worth a wander round). We stayed B&B, but also chose to dine in the hotel both evenings, due to recommendation from friends. We were so pleased we did, the food and restaurant service were excellent and good value for money. We had a Superior Room, which was large, with a double bed and separate sofa by the TV and lovely view of the hotel's surrounding lovely garden. This was our first mini break since the outbreak of Covid, so we were slightly nervous & not sure what to expect from a hotel stay. But we had no need to be. Considering the strange new masked world we're now living in, the team at the Hotel made us feel so comfortable, safe & welcome, that the new normal soon felt normal! From the efficient & almost contactless check in/check out (they email you to check in online ahead of your arrival, so you just collect your key when you get there), to the spotless lovely room (extra care clearly taken to comply with Covid guidance), to the great food choice and service (again, all menus available through an app or on the Guest Information section of the website, to avoid physical contact with menus where possible). The team were all great, having adapted so well to the new Covid compliant environment. I can't imagine how tough it has been for the Hospitality sector, but The Grange team are shining examples of how it can work well. A huge thanks to Jon, Jenny and the whole team. We will definitely be returning to this lovely hotel in the future.
Anniversary treat at this Beautiful hotel, very friendly and attentive staff, very welcoming. I must say the restaurant was superb, I highly recommend the lamb, so tasty. Great location. Would definitely recommend this hotel.
Had an absolutely fabulous time at the Grange. Stunning hotel, immaculate bedroom which came with a 4 poster bed & a balcony furniture & a wonderful view. The food was delicious. Will definitely be back! Would certainly recommend a stay.
Situated in Oborne with nothing in walking distance but very comfortable and peaceful. The evening meals were very nice, the lamb could do with more sauce or some in a servers as optional as it was exceptional. The four poster room is very nice and the other rooms are clean and clean. Bathroom somewhat small but manageable. Breakfast was okay and a little slow, but the staff are extremely friendly and helpful. If you're after good food, nice place to stay and peace to re charge then this could be a good option. We certainly enjoyed our visit and would recommend.
Nothing was too much trouble at The Grange. Great attention to detail and the coolest Social distancing reminder notices we have seen anywhere. We were nervous about a holiday but this lovely hotel in Oborne was perfect.
We came to the Grange as our first post Lockdown days away; my partner had been shielding until March and was looking forward to it with the excitement of a little kid. We were not disappointed; we were allocated a beautiful, tranquil bedroom, which led directly onto the gardens. The entire staff speak fluent Covid; during our first meal at the restaurant I found it really moving that no pepper mill made it back into the cupboard, of which I had a good view, without being individually spray-cleansed and wiped. The menu is varied and enticing; I can certainly vouch for the seabass, which we enjoyed at supper, and the kippers which are available for breakfast. Obviously no-one wants an accident on holiday or at any other time, but my partner fell backwards, hit her head, and we needed to call an ambulance. This was just before midnight. Jon was fantastic. Calm, knowledgeable, focused, and yes, caring. I honestly felt that I was with family. When I returned from the hospital the next day a note was waiting for me saying, as was already obvious, that nothing would be too much trouble, and to call on the staff for anything I needed. My partner is recovering, and today we discussed how and when we might arrange a return visit. Don't forget to take a 6.00 pm stroll during the evening, before a drink at the bar; the local ducks do that (the stroll, not the drink, as far as I know). And for those nerds among you, yes, you can charge your car at the Grange.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Dear KMN, What a lovely review and what a night! I am delighted that your partner is recovering well and you would both be very welcome back as soon as she is well enough. The ducks are our pets - I don't know if I told you that when you were here. Stay safe and keep in touch. Jon and Jenny
A fantastic place to stay, a little out of the way but great service, great food and the friendliest staff. Definitely worth a visit. Great for families, solo or couples. Well within range for interesting day trips.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Thank you Chris. You are quite right - our staff members are very friendly!
We decided to go a return to The Grange for our first get away after Lockdown as we knew from previous stays just how good they are. John welcomed us and efficiently went through all the details of our stay for safety . All details are obtainable, including menus, on an excellent website. Our room, number 4, was just wonderful with four poster bed ( very comfortable) and a perfect roof terrace for private use with balustrades covered in wisteria, so pretty. Meals are so well organised, Kirstie, Theresa and JP are just wonderful in getting our orders to us. The menu is amazing and delicious, compliments to the chef. At all times we felt safe and glad we decided on The Grange, here's to the next time.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Dear Felicity, Thank you! That is a lovely review and we are very pleased that we were able to make your stay enjoyable and safe. Jon & Jenny
Came here for the first time last year and just loved it. Loved it just as much this trip. It's a wonderful place in scenic country with great rooms and good food. You can't ask for much more than that. But, as others have said, what really makes this place is the service. Staff are so welcoming, happy to help you with anything, and it just gives the entire hotel a homey feel. Will keep coming back for sure!
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and for commenting about all of the people who work here - we agree, they are a lovely bunch! Jon & Jenny
Stayed overnight to visit nearby family. Very friendly staff, good sized room and lovely location. Parking was easy. Excellent stay for a very good price! Will look out for similar deals in the future. Thank you.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
We are very pleased that you enjoyed it so much and we look forward to welcoming you back! Jon & Jenny
We were luckily enough to have our wedding reception here 8 years ago so were keen to reminisce. Great to see that not much has changed in this time apart from the added comfort of sanitizers, QR code menus and social distancing in place. It's still the same friendly owners that greet you on arrival, the same beautiful gardens and a fantastic whisky selection! A cosy hotel that goes above and beyond to make your stay a comfortable, enjoyable experience
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and very glad to welcome you back!
My husband and myself came to The Grange today for a lunchtime meal. It was the first time we had ventured out since the lockdown began in March as we have been shielding. We had asked to sit outside as it was a beautiful day and we ate in the lovely garden under the shade of a tree. The atmosphere was totally tranquil, staff beautifully attentive and the meal was excellent. There was a good menu choice, we thoroughly enjoyed our short visit and can't wait to visit again.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Dear Janet, Thank you for your lovely review. I am very pleased that you chose The Grange to be your first post-lockdown escape!
Jenny and Jon and their staff have done a remarkable job in preparing their hotel for guests post lockdown. We found, notwithstanding the restrictions, our stay at the hotel to be very relaxing and a thoroughly enjoyable break. The hotel has managed to negotiate beautifully that difficult path between compliance and informality that is their hallmark. The food was excellent and their whole team were very welcoming. This is our second visit to the hotel and we were not disappointed - we will be coming again.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Thank you! I am so pleased you enjoyed your break. It was difficult to ensure the hotel was safe, whilst providing a 'hotel experience'.I am glad that we ticked the box! Jon & Jenny
When hotels were opening again, the first place we thought of was The Grange at Oborne. We knew, from previous visits, that we would be well looked after. We also knew that they would make sure everything was in place for the safety of guests and staff. We were not disappointed. Everything was as close to " the real thing" as was possible, and all the extra precautions never really intruded. They were there when you looked for them but there was no need to keep on looking... we got on with enjoying our visit. Well done to Jenny ,Jon and all the staff.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Hi, Thank you for your review. I am delighted that you enjoyed your time and it felt like the real thing! Look forward to seeing you both again soon. Jon & Jenny
I honestly cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. The rooms are beautifully decorated, the beds are comfortable, the food is delicious, and they have a great selection of drinks. The location is great too, and the grounds are stunning. However the one thing that sets this hotel apart from others is the staff. Every single person is so friendly and helpful. You will arrive here to stay at a hotel, and leave feeling as though you've made new friends for life. I've recommended to family and friends, and all who visit absolutely love it here.
Jonathan Fletcher, Owner at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Dear Vix, How kind! It was our pleasure and I am very glad that you enjoyed you time with us. I see from you review that you stayed in August last year! Well, that is far too long ago and you must come and visit Oborne again soon. Jon & Jenny
Considering the pandemic and adaptations required as we come out of lockdown the standards at this hotel were first class. Special thanks goes to the gentleman from front of house who couldn't do enough to make this a pleseant stay
Wonderful food, excellent service and beautiful accommodation all hidden in an exquisite Dorset village. The location is quiet and tranquil with lovely gardens however it offers good WiFi connections and is close to places of interest in both Dorset and Somerset.
TheGrangeatOborne, General Manager at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Hi Catharine, Thank you very much for the lovely review and I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay. I am pleased that you mentioned the wifi - we have recently upgraded the network in preparation for having fibre installed in the spring. Very exciting! Jon
Thanks for the hospitality host, we asked to add a bed and bothered the customer service several times, plus our English aren't fluent, but the hosts are still patient, friendly and professional. We had a long day travelling, and when the sun going down, when we finally arrived and it made me feel emotional to see the fairy lighted cozy house, and I feel welcomed. The place indeed gives us a feeling of home.
TheGrangeatOborne, General Manager at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Hi, Thank you. I am delighted that you found us easy to deal with. You did exactly the right thing by phoning us directly, rather than booking online - it was cheaper and you got the right room for the additional bed. I hope your mother and father enjoy the rest of their time in the UK. Jon
Can not praise the Grange enough. Organised a 50th Birthday lunch for 28 people ( originally 34 ) wish I knew the words to express the wonderful service in preparing the occasion and then the day itself. All our guests expressed what a wonderful venue and fantastic food. We can honestly not criticised the Grange and their staff at all.
TheGrangeatOborne, General Manager at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Dear Dave. Our absolute pleasure, it's always nice to be able to play a small part in making a special occasion that bit more special. And Happy Birthday! Jon
Would highly recommend - excellent service, far beyond expectations. I attended a sizable and formal function at the hotel on 23rd Nov 19 and I was most impressed with this jewel of a venue. My car got stuck on an area of grass (not their fault - my choice to drive off the hard standing). I was in a dinner suit so was quite unhappy at my mistake and explained this at reception. With out delay or question the manager and several members of staff came and helped to push my car free. They didn't have to do this, as mentioned it was my fault but it did help me to enjoy the evening without wondering how I would get the car out after. The evening from there went from strength to strength. The food was outstanding, the service friendly and professional and the facilities were clean and of the highest quality. Please don't let the delay in presenting this review give the wrong impression. I was hugely impressed with this hotel in every respect and would strongly recommend for either a full function or a quiet evening - in a beautiful setting. Thank you The Grange. R
TheGrangeatOborne, General Manager at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Dear Roger, Thank you! I remember the evening and helping you with your car. I am glad that you had a good time at the party. We look forward to welcoming you back on another occasion. Jon
Very enjoyable stay at the Grange. An excellent late supper was provided for us after our unexpected late arrival following a car breakdown. Very good breakfast options, excellent meal in restaurant, very pleasant hotel all round, lovely location.
TheGrangeatOborne, General Manager at The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Hi, Yes, I remember your arrival - I felt very sorry for you, arriving so late with your car on the back of a two-truck. I am glad that we were able to help take some of the unpleasantness out of the situation and you enjoyed your break with us. Jon
I've not stayed overnight at the Grange, so I can't comment on the rooms, but they hosted an afternoon function for me (approx 40 people) recently and did a very nice job. Good food, helpful staff and a very pleasant ambience all round, and in a beautiful setting. Recommended
This hotel is really very good indeed and made a welcome change from the numerous travel lodges I've stayed in. Whilst they may be part of a chain/franchise, they have a really personal service, the food was excellent (I noted most diners were not staying, so it is good enough to attract people just for food), location/surroundings lovely and quiet, with a garden at the back and rooms overlooking. I liked the local biscuits and tea and the note under my door to tell me what the weather would be tomorrow. I would stay again.
Superb Boxing Day family lunch, even better than last year. Smooth efficient service, good atmosphere and ambiance, food absolutely perfect. A most pleasurable 3 hours spent in comfortable surroundings. We've already booked for next year!
We spent three nights over Xmas at the Grange. The owners and staff worked incredibly hard and nothing was ever too much trouble. Everyone went out of their way to make sure that the guests had a fabulous time. The very plentiful food was beautifully presented and first class. Our room was everything that we wanted and spotlessly clean. The surprise gift hanging on the door on Xmas morning was a nice touch. There is a choice of two large lounges both equally comfortable and including reading material and games and a welcoming log fire. The garden is nice for a stroll round, even in winter, and the rural location lends itself to walks and exploring further afield if the weather permits. Oborne village itself is attractive and interesting. If you are looking for a relaxing break in lovely countryside at a very comfortable hotel, then I would thoroughly recommend the Grange.
I was booked into this hotel by the organisation organising the event and we had Christmas Dinner there. The acoomodation, staff, venue and food were all to a very high standard and I look forward to staying here again either for business or pleasure
This is a pretty hotel up a quiet lane in Oborne. We were met at reception by a friendly member of staff who once checked in showed us to our room. The room was tastefully decorated with a double bed, two chairs and a wall mounted tv. Tea and coffee facilities were on the windowsill. The bathroom was bright and we had a bath rather than shower. So how was our stay? Day one all ok apart from 10 or so “short” hairs that were stuck to the bath and shower wall. Although not pleasant a quick rinse with the shower was sufficient. Bed was very firm and the pillows quite solid. If you like REALLY firm beds you'll love this. Condensation seems a real problem. The pictures show the extent. It seems a pity the curtains can't be washed regularly as this certainly didn't look short term mildew. The next morning however is when it all went wrong. My partner had a bath and when I went to shower after her...no hot water! Having washed in the basin we went to breakfast. We told the manager who went to investigate and returned confirming there was no hot water. The reason given? We and two other couples had rooms all on one tank so all the water may have been used. I do not expect to be told this. It is totally unacceptable for a hotel that claims to be 3 star to have an issue like this. I was offered the use of another room to shower but having got dressed and sat about to eat breakfast, I declined the offer. The manager offered to reduce the cost of the stay as compensation. Breakfast was a choice of continental or full English. Large pot of tea or coffee to accompany. We chose full English and it was lovely. This hotel is lovely to stay at, with staff willing to help wherever possible. Just make sure you're up early to get your shower in.
Excellent catering for 30+ people over lunch and afternoon AGM. Food was excellent, good service and no confusion over who was having what. Good size portions without being overwhelmed, tasty food nicely presented. Good facilities for groups of 30 - 80 weddings are well done I have heard also Already booked for next year
A very pleasant 2 night stop en route back home from Devon, this boutique hotel is located on the edge of a small, pretty village (a few houses and a church) in an idyllically quiet spot, with no noise or traffic. Sadly the weather didn't allow us to enjoy the outside. Family-run with the backing of the Best Western name, it is a friendly, homely setting and clearly a popular venue with a good reputation for its restaurant. Very pleasant room, good-sized, overlooking the garden with en-suite. Very clean with fresh linen and towels, tea and coffee provision, tv and sofa. Breakfast and dinner was comprehensive with good range of choice, beautifully prepared, cooked and presented. Service was excellent, ambience and surroundings were quietly enjoyable with limited hard surfaces and no background music - a particular issue I often have with restaurants. Sometimes being incommunicado is attractive but one significant shortcoming of the location is the poor connectivity in the area both broadband and phone signal - ( I understand they are hopeful that improvements will soon be forthcoming ) - I hate it but one cannot ignore the role it plays in our lives now. Wi-fi in the hotel is there but slow and limited. Quite expensive but very worthwhile for the quality of stay and the peacefulness. Would certainly recommend it.
Loved this hotel, friendly and helpful staff, good food and a comfortable and beautifully decorated room with sliding doors leading to a small terrace. Very quiet area so a relaxing stay. I felt that a little very quiet and gentle classical music would have added to the ambience in the evening. Sitting in the Lounge and the Restaurant, it just needed something more to complete the peaceful atmosphere.
Stayed at this hotel a few years ago and still very impressed with the setup. Small number of rooms and quiet location. Our room had balcony with views over the enclosed garden. Good selection for evening meal which we both enjoyed. Breakfast also had wide selection of options with freshly - cooked to order - food.Staff friendly and helpful.
Here we feel comfortable, relaxed welcome in quality accommodation, good facilities and tasty cuisine. This hotel is a gem in character and setting. All the staff are friendly, efficient and helpful and we always look forward to our next visit.
A very nice hotel in a very quiet position but handy distance away from Sherborn and the surrounding areas. Very comfortable rooms good food and excellent helpful staff plenty of parking. The rooms were of a good size with good facilities.
We stayed here as a group of classic car enthusiasts. The hotel looked after us very well. The staff were friendly and efficient, the food was really good - especially as they we catering for 30 of us, and the rooms were beautifully furnished / fitted and in good order. There's some nice gardens to sit in and we were blessed with good weather too. It was really everything we like in a hotel, and delivered very well too.
Our small group stayed again for two nights at this hotel and again loved it. We two had a huge room, with plenty of space to unpack our things, including in the bathroom, which had a rubber bath mat provided without asking - a key wish of mine! Everywhere was gloriously quiet, the food was truly first class, and the staff were amazingly efficient, friendly and professional. Breakfasts were good, with a cold buffet and hot things cooked to order and served promptly. We are still making plans to go back on our own to this lovely part of the country - we've now seen it in spring and autumn and it's hard to choose. I see from my previous review that I commented that the bed was comfortable and the wi-fi excellent. Sadly this time wasn't quite so good. Although we slept quite well we found this bed rather hard and the wi-fi non-existent in our room. We were told this is because they are awaiting super fast fibre, but if it was good last time perhaps it is really because there aren't enough boosters around the hotel? Only a minor point in what was a really great stay in one of the nicest hotels we've ever stayed in..
We decided on a micro / just the two of us / elopement type of Wedding and picked The Grange at Oborne for its picturesque, hidden-away, romantic, countryside feel. It was a perfect day, and a perfect stay! I couldn't have wished for more. I'm still on cloud nine! From the very first tentative email I sent outlining our ideas for our wedding, to checking out, the whole experience was wonderful. It is a very special, family run hotel. Not at all like a chain hotel (I think “Best Western Hotels” are more like a membership/affiliation type of thing because the hotel is still owned by the family themselves.) The welcome and attention we received was so friendly and warm and the hotel was spotlessly clean and comfortable, even managing to feel homely in the lounge. When we first visited back in January there was a lovely open fire, and last week (early September 2019) when we arrived (in time for Sunday Lunch - highly recommended!) the doors were open to the beautifully landscaped sunny gardens. Our room was traditionally furnished, in keeping with the old building, boasting a four poster bed, fire place, large outdoor balcony covered in Wisteria (bet it looks amazing in April/May!) - beautifully tiled bathroom too. The WiFi was mostly fair - good, but the thick stone walls were sometimes an issue. Rural internet isn't great anyway, but to be perfectly honest, it worked well enough to send wedding pics and videos to family, and I wasn't wanting to stream Netflix on my honeymoon anyway! The restaurant was OUT OF THIS WORLD. Hands down the best hotel restaurant food we have ever eaten (and my husband was a very good chef). The menu changes daily and there was always something to tempt and delight us on the menu. The restaurant is unsurprisingly popular so make sure you book! I rather like the way the restaurant does things at The Grange. They seat you in the lounge, serve drinks there and take your order, and when your food is ready seat you in the restaurant. It's a relaxing and nice way of doing things and adds to the dining experience. The wine list is very good, and the service is exceptional. Young enthusiastic staff, very welcoming. Breakfast was incredible - I've never seen so much choice! I recommend the home made granola, crunchy and a bit chewy - delicious! The full English was fantastic as was the continental breakfast we ate in our room (meats, cheeses, fruit, pastries... YUM!) Every single meal we ate there was utterly delicious, without exception. If you are lucky enough to visit, make sure to try the home made ice cream (OMG) Our micro-wedding was perfect. The Grange probably do a lot of much larger weddings than ours (I noticed a beautiful, large banqueting room) but we were perfectly accommodated in their Wessex Room for the ceremony (wood panelled, heavily curtained with chandeliers). It felt intimate, classic and romantic. We even had our Spotify wedding playlist on low in the background. The Dorset Registrars who came out to marry us were fantastic too, very friendly and warm. It poured with rain that day (Advice for brides (and/or grooms!) - bring a lighted mirror, as I did, for make up) which was a bit of a shame since the gardens are beautiful for pictures, but The Grange has a large conservatory area which was actually quite brilliant for photos. We wanted everything no-fuss/ low-key (and we were on a budget) so instead of a photographer we opted for phone camera selfies! The staff helped us with these, recording the ceremony on my phone while taking pics with the other phone! We even got a group shot with a selfie stick. Lots of fun! We even had two of the hotel staff act as our witnesses! And that brings me to the main reason you should visit The Grange...the staff... THE STAFF AT THE GRANGE ARE THE BEST! Particularly Kirsty, and the husband and wife managers, Jonathan and Jenny. They were incredible, so welcoming, warm and friendly, that it actually felt a bit like staying with old friends! The little romantic touches made us feel so special, writing words of congratulations on our dessert plates in chocolate, putting our wedding flowers on our restaurant table, opening champagne for us after the wedding, throwing confetti over us for pictures with their charming daughters... never have we stayed anywhere and felt as relaxed, indulged and thoroughly spoilt as we did at The Grange. We plan to go back every year on our anniversary. It couldn't have been more perfect and I have zero hesitation in recommending them for an over night, a lovely long stay, or your own special day!
Stayed here for 2 nights when attending a wedding nearby. Lovely hotel with very friendly and helpful staff. Large room and comfortable bed. The food in the restaurant was very good. Close to Sherborne but in quiet village location.
A wonderful accidental find with great staff and a lovely room. The service was excellent with good choices for both dinner and breakfast. The very friendly family and staff made us feel welcome and exceptionally helpful. We will stay again when passing in this direction.
This place is magic! The rooms are beautifully decorated and cosy and ours had a large balcony overlooking the tiny village. Breakfasts are good and the evening meals outstanding. The ambience is very welcoming and every member of staff was well trained and very pleasant. We will certainly go again.
Would have been 5 stars, room, corridors, doors and lounge grubby and neglected. Bathroom tiles mouldy. Very relaxing and pretty place. Garden very nice. Food excellent. Most staff were temporary, which was a great shame
Oborne is a quintessential Dorset village bordering the beautiful market town of Sherborne, probably a mile and a half walk away. Stayed in this charming Country House Hotel for three nights in April as a base to explore Dorset. The room was expansive, quiet and very comfortable with a superb en-suite wet room. The hotel has a classy (but not snobbish) ambience, lovely grounds and great breakfasts. Staff were particularly helpful and welcoming, were prepared to make sandwiches when the chef had gone home - special mention to young Frankie who really looked after us. If you are looking for a peaceful and restful haven then would recommend The Grange.
My wife and I stayed for one night at this lovely hotel. The service and friendliness was second to none. Quality of food and service was excellent, we will definitely return for longer stay in the future.
Stayed for a couple of nights back end of last year. Lovely hotel, great food, room was huge! hosts great and very accommodating. a thirty minute walk into Sherborne with all its delights. as a base was perfect.
I was here as a wedding guest and was most impressed with this hotel. It is a great wedding venue that lends itself so well to such a happy occasion. The staff were attentive , friendly and most of all efficient which helped the day proceed very well. The venue was beautifully presented and the food delicious .
The Grange nestles in the pretty Dorset village of Oborne. This family run hotel is very friendly and handy for visiting this lesser known part of Dorset. The owner/managers are right at the centre of village life. Try to catch the annual ‘Opera in Oborne' weekend at the beginning of August.
A 2 night stay playing golf in The South of England Boys Championships. This was my first time alone in a hotel without my parents being with me, haven stayed at previous Best Western hotels 3 within 12 months I knew what to expect. From the moment I arrived the staff were very helpful and kind- the Steak sandwich and English breakfast were very nice. Thank you for making my stay enjoyable See you soon - Sam.
I don't write many reviews but for a chain hotel, this was lovely, a real gem. Not like a chain at all, and more similar to a luxury hotel at £300/night. Excellent food and drink, but the reason for the review is the staff were so nice on reception, not like the gruff attitude you get in some places. Lots of waitresses, good food menu, nice garden and balcony. A real country house hotel.
All staff were so friendly, garden lovely. We had a room with a balcony which we sat out on very quite and peaceful. We stayed for three nights but really did not want to come home. The food was very good. The Manager and his Wife always had time to stop and have a chat which makes you feel welcome. We would certainly come again and would not hesitate to recommend to people.
The Grange is a lovely country house hotel just outside the village of Oborne. We stayed there for a couple of nights whilst visiting Sherborne Castle. Breakfast whas excellen and freshly cooked to order. This does make the service a bit slower that the buffet bar adopted by other hotels but the food is worth the wait, There are two dinner menues a two or theree course fixed price one and a grazers menu. We ate from both and hte food was excellent. You may need to request the grazers menu. The wifi was excellent however the internet connection is currently a bit slow, which is to be expected for a country location. I understand that they are getting FTP in the autumn which will speed things up. If you drive an electric car you need to be aware that the charging point at the front of the hotel is currently ou of service as it is being upgraded. I understant this shopould be com[leted in the next few weeks. The hotel is located in a valley so the mobile signal is a bit patchy. This was not a problem as far as I was concerned. The above
We often go to Devon for our summer holidays but like to take a couple of days to get there and back to visit other places. The journey was unkind to us so took longer than expected to arrive. We stopped at Sherborne to visit the castle and then headed to the hotel. Very friendly welcome & a lovely new member of staff (sorry didn't catch his name). Very peaceful place with a nice garden to enjoy a G&T (or two)! You sit in a car with teenage sisters! Dinner was lovely & the staff nice. Breakfast was also good. I mentioned on checkout an issue we had with our room (nothing that could have been fixed as external forces were at work). It was dealt with efficiently and with complete professionalism. 10 out of 10 for their service. Would recommend.
A really pleasant stay. The location, if as we do, you like peace and quiet would be hard to beat, had the windows open all night and heard nothing but bird song in the mornings. We visited some beautiful national trust properties whilst here and there are a number within a fairly short distance, Stourhead and Montacute house to name a couple. Any down sides? My poached eggs hadn't been drained so breakers was in a small puddle and the Bitter shandy was flat. Neither a major issue and certainly nothing that would prevent me thoroughly recommending this hotel and its staff.
Rooms are old and look (maybe are) dirty, shower and toilet are 'aged', the curtain is useless and there is no manner to obscure the window, so the room at 5 am is fully lighted. The breakfast does not really offer anything simple for people not used to cooked meals like eggs, salmon etc... There is no mobile signal and the Wi-Fi connection is very very poor. To be avoided if possible.
TheGrangeatOborne, Manager at Best Western Dorset Oborne the Grange Hotel, responded to this review
I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. As you did not tell us of any of these problems when you stayed, I do not know when you stayed or which room you stayed in, but I do wish you had said something as we many have been able to put some things right: Parts of the hotel are nearly 300 years old, so yes, some of the rooms are old, but we also have a newer part of the hotel where the rooms are more modern, it may have been possible to move you, but as you did not say anything, we did not know. All of our en-suite bathrooms have been completely refurbished within the last 12 years, so I do think it is a little unfair to call it ‘aged'. Like the bedrooms, we have a mixture of different styles of bathrooms – some more traditional and some more modern with wet-rooms. Had you told us, we may have been able to move you to another room with a more modern en-suite. You wrote that the rooms are old (and maybe) dirty. Our rooms are not dirty, but if you had said something when you stayed, we would have had the room cleaned again for you, but we did not know. Regarding breakfast, it is simply not true to say that the hotel “does not really offer anything simple for people not used to cooked meals like eggs, salmon etc...” Please allow me to list the items we offer at breakfast: From the Buffet: Natural Yoghurt Fresh Pineapple Fresh Galia Melon Homemade Berry Compote Apricot Halves in Syrup Grapefruit Segments Homemade Granola Homemade Muesli Flaked Almonds, Dried Apricots, Pecan Buts, Dried Prines, Hazel Nuts Branflakes, Cornflakes, Rice Krispies, Weetabix, Frosties, Coco Pops Maple Syrup Honey Marmalade and 3 flavours of jam Additionally, from the kitchen we offer: A selection of cold meats, cheese, apple and grapes. A kings breakfast of smoked salmon with scrambled eggs on a toasted muffin Kippers A full English breakfast, with sausage, back and streaky bacon, black pudding, hash brown, mushrooms, tomato, baked beans and eggs. Toast Croissants I am really not sure what else it is that you would liked to have had at breakfast? Vodafone do not have a network in this area. There is little we can do to improve this. Perhaps you could report it to your mobile telephone company who you pay to provide a signal? I am pleased to say that both EE and O2 provide network coverage. The wifi connection is very good. The broadband is not very good and this is beyond our control. We have installed a load-balancing router and multiple lines to try to ease the problem, however I am delighted that we are due to have fibre to the premises installed by the autumn of this year. The issue with Vodafone and the broadband is listed on our website so that guests can make an informed decision when booking a room at The Grange.
just would like to say, went for a dinner for annual austin car rally, lots of our members were staying there,to there delight, all the members said how great it was,the dinner was very good, service great,&the best thing, the manager John took us back to our hotel 10 mls away,as our taxi couldnt get to us for 2 hrs.bless him.a new car delivered that day, on top of that it was pouring.what fantastic service. such a nice man.so on the hole fantasic hotel, perfect spot, fantastic staff.THANK YOU JOHN. steph long.
We were asked to arrange an event requiring accommodation for approximately 30 people. Having read the reviews we decided to visit the Grange at Oborne and from that first visit we received first class treatment. Jon, the hotel manager, was always available for a phone call or an email and offered us helpful advice. The event took place last weekend and we have had many complimentary comments from our members who booked to stay at the hotel. In addition we hosted a dinner for 50 people on Saturday evening and again the service was excellent. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel and we certainly plan to visit again. It is located in a beautiful, peaceful area with wonderful views across the countryside from the upstairs corridor windows. We had French doors from our room leading to a patio where we were able to sit and enjoy a restful few hours with a book.
Superb setting, lovely quiet spacious bedroom with comfort at heart.Staff always smiling , efficient and friendly Delicious food . Situated in lovely part of the county... A hotel worth a visit, hope to come again.
This is a family run hotel in a quiet spot where we have previously stayed and returned because it was good. Lovely room, superb evening meal, reasonably priced wine list, excellent breakfast and a comfortable overnight stay. Surprised that there is no fridge provided in the room, however.
We found this after selecting the area and doing our norm taking research. We have stopped way BW before and always found them good value. This was no exception. Couldn't fault out in any way. We plumped for a queen deluxe and couldn't have asked for more. The hotel is beautifully countryfied and we couldn't believe how nice the room was with a four poster bed, setee and balcony. The ambience and the setting was awesome , just the ticket. We only started B&B, but the restaurant seemed to be popular. The breakfast was fantastic, order what you want as a cooked breakfast, but also great yourself to some cereal or continental style. Full of flavour and value for money. The location is also really good, not far from the sea and the lovely town of Sherborne with its Christopher Wren heritage. Totally enjoyable, relaxing and worth a second visit.
We enjoyed our 2 nights in a lovely big bedroom with large windows opening to the garden. Very quiet and comfortable; we liked the little attentions like the note on the weather forecast for the next day slipped under the bedroom door in the evening. The food is good (breakfast and evening meal) and we discovered a new french wine !
We held a celebratory lunch at The Grange for 25 guests following our son's wedding earlier this month. We were delighted with all aspects of the service. The hotel is stylishly and tastefully furnished, while the food from an inventive menu was delicious was beautifully presented. Jenny and Jonathan's management style is highly professional, but unobtrusive and relaxed. We would certainly recommend The Grange without any hesitation.
A lovely quiet hotel set on the edge of a quiet village. Lovely staff, good food, and comfortable room. Surprised it was only 3*. We selected D, B&B which was a great choice to enjoy a summer evening looking onto the garden
We had heard good reports of this hotel and it's restaurant and needed a hotel within easy distance of Yeovil. The hotel deserves it reputation. A very friendly reception and staff. We had a lovely room/suite with large balcony, four poster bed, overlooking their super garden. A nice touch was a coffee making machine, fresh fruit and local soft drinks in the room. We had an excellent dinner, preceded by a drink in their cosy bar. Oborne is situated in a superb and quiet part of lovely Dorset and is close to Sherborne with it's famous Abbey and school. Thoroughly recommended and we will be back.
Awsome hotel. Excellent service. Well locales Cloe to Sherborne town. Gorgeous house and splendid and bolsón Garden.Fantastic breakfast. Jenny and Jhon are so kind. A pie e of heaven on earth. We will come back without any doubt. Thanks a lot.
Everything excellent, staff professional, courteous and welcoming. The hotel setting was great, very peaceful, we had a superior room with a balcony, weather was great so that helped. Not a massive hotel which we liked as it felt friendlier and cosy. I love the quirkiness of the Best Westerns as they are all unique, much nicer than the bland cheap chains
The hotel is absolutely charming with lovely staff. Really enjoyed the restaurant food. The deluxe room was spacious and romantic with 4 poster and veranda and garden views. The bar is well stocked too. Thoroughly recommend.
I did not know what to expect from a hotel in the middle of nowhere but what a surprise from the moment we entered the Hotel we received a warm welcome ,our luggage taken to our lovely spacious room ,comfortable bed and ensuit bathroom ,lovely comfortable lounge and bar ,excellent excellent restaurant and lovely well cooked food all locally surprise, all set in lovely gardens
Although we only stayed for one night, all the staff, right down (or up!) to the two managers treated us with great attention. The hotel is in a very quiet part of Dorset, close to Sherborne and, although it was raining on the morning of our departure, we could see that the grounds were very nicely laid out. The room was huge and the double bed (although a little too hard for me, personally), was king sized. The laid-out breakfast of the usual cereals, fruit juice etc was quite adequate, but the hotel will also prepare a full English breakfast at no extra cost for those wanting a rousing start for the day! Overall a very nice stay, fully recommended.
My companion and I had a very relaxing comfortable stay at The Grange. It is very welcoming, with delightful friendly staff. The meals were delicious, full marks to the chef. Our room was spacious and very clean, with an excellent selection of teas and coffees.
We were given this 2 night stay as a secret escape gift by friends. The place is great and cannot fault the hotel. The staff were very helpful from the moment we arrived and throughout our stay. We had dinner on the first night which was superb and the breakfast was very good. The room was very clean and everything worked. We were delighted with our stay and will return in the future for sure.
We have stayed at the Grange before but this was just an 'overnighter'. We had booked ahead and even selected our room so, check-in with Kirsty was a breeze. We freshened up and went, via the bar, to dinner. As usual there was a varied menu (plus a market menu) and the selection was excellent - as were the chosen meals. Well fed and happy, we retired and slept well. In the morning we rose refreshed, enjoyed a leisurely breakfast (courtesy of Teresa) and moved on. The Grange is a really good, welcoming hotel in tranquil surroundings we shall be visiting again. TIP - If you are navigating by satnav from the Sherborne / Salisbury road follow the hotel's own signs on your final approach. The satnav errs!
The Grange is set on the outskirts of Sherborne which is only a short car ride away from the town centre. A great hotel full of character. The greeting on arrival was very friendly and the room (no. 3) was well equipped and offered a great view of the gardens. The bed was extremely comfortable. I did not eat at the hotel as this was already organised for later in one of the towns restaurants. However, I did see the menu and it looked very appealing. Overall a very pleasant stay.
We had our Christmas party earlier this month at The Grange and they rose to the occasion admirably, considering that there were 145 of us – a record for them I believe. The dining room is beautifully laid out and we were served a fabulous three course meal, followed by dancing. The menu choices were inspired and they offered vegan and dairy free options. For the main course I chose the lamb, which was absolutely delicious and melt in the mouth. The service was efficient and so professional. Can't think of a nicer place to have a Christmas do! Well done to all of the team there, and thank you. We didn't stay the night, but other guests at the party did, and they said it was lovely there.
From start to finish, we couldn't fault a thing. STUNNING room, suberb staff, and excellent food. Kirsty is an asset to the establishment. There wasn't a thing that the owners hadn't thought of to make each guests stay personal, and perfect. We can't wait to return.
This ancient lovely family run hotel is tucked away in a tiny corner of rural Dorset where peace and comfort are everywhere and it is a perfect base for seeing the county of Dorset and much of Somerset. The two rooms we had were spacious, up two flights of stairs, and very comfortable. We had two evening meals in the hotel; the food was interestingly designed, very tasty, beautifully presented and well served. One of our party needed Gluten free diet which produced no problems to the preparation. The wine list was imaginative with a good selection and range of prices and the young staff efficiently competent and cheerful. Thank you, a lovely weekend.
Really can't fault our stay here....especially the staff who were exceptional...one assumes it is a very happy place to work & that shows.Food excellent, beautiful setting, really comfortable room.Nothing not to like!!!
We have stayed twice at The Grange and plan to stay there again. The atmosphere is great largely because of the terrific staff who are very friendly and helpful. Nothing seems to be too much trouble for them. The food is delicious and the service is good as well. The hotel seems much like home from home rather than many of the sterile and minimalist hotels round the country. Very clean and with everything we need. My only issue is the baths are not comfortable but this is not of great importance. Looking forward to visiting again soon..
This place is well positioned for visiting Sherborne and Shaftsbury, a wonderfully quiet country house hotel which delivers everything it promises. Rooms that we stayed in were elegantly decorated and extremely comfortable. We were pleasantly surprised at the attention to detail with such nice touches such as a good selection of complimentary beverages, local magazines and lovely quality toiletries etc. The lounge areas are really nice to relax in and the food in the restaurant is superb. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. We could not fault a thing - a luxury experience at an extremely fair price, we will definitely be back.
Have visited this hotel on a number of occasions and it almost feels like home. The staff are welcoming and friendly and the rooms have real character. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are alway very enjoyable, with great service from a varied menu that includes many locally sourced items. Highly recommended.
I've stayed here twice now and each time I have had a friendly, warm and professional welcome. Both times the room has been a very good size and a feeling of understated luxury. They also have a good selection of whiskies! Breakfast was excellent and all the staff are caring warm friendly and attentive I highly recommend this hotel
Spent a couple of nights here recently. The staff are great, especially Eli and the room we had was clean and spacious, with a garden view. Only downside was the lack of reading light on one side of the bed. The menu was rather limited but on the whole the food was reasonable.
We arrived as a group & were greeted by the owners & friendly staff. Cases were whisked to our fabulous rooms. All the room facilities were excellent & a little delightful touch each morning with a card giving us the weather forecast for the day. En suite had all the required toiletries & something not in all hotels but hooks behind the door. Seems a minor thing but something I find so useful. Beds were comfy with usual tea, coffee etc plus a tv. Also countryside views. Decor delightful. Food was superb. Great breakfast choices & the evening meals were just fabulous. Choices were varied & each course was just to die for. Presentation likened to Masterchef. The staff couldn't do enough for you. The location was peaceful with a wonderful garden yet close to Sherborne & surrounding area. I would highly recommend this hotel & we hope to visit again next year.
The hotel was very nice but outside smelled really bad of sewage. We stayed 3 nights, I always try and reuse my towels was a little disappointed when the bath mat that I left to be replaced was not, also coffee was not replenish each day. I do feel your room should be done each day as if it was your first you pay the same for each night you deserve that service. It was also very warm in the room no AC
We stay at this hotel regularly when we go down to Dorset. It is very comfortable and relaxing. The food is always good. The only downside is that the hotel is very popular with non residents for dinner so you have to plan where you are eating.
We did the overnight dinner, bed and breakfast package for a late anniversary and my husband's birthday. The service, food and venue were just perfect. The staff are really welcoming and the service was brilliant. Our room was lovely with a big terrace and the food faultless.
If you want to stay in a quiet, serene location, with wonderful food, attentive staff and clean, comfortable rooms then the Grange is for you! On entering the hotel we were greeted by the friendly receptionist and shown to our room, which was spacious and comfortable. The bed was big and comfortable and the cosy sofa in the room was a pleasant bonus! There was a plentiful supply of complimentary refreshments and toiletries. The restaurant had a lovely ambiance and the food was delicious, the staff couldn't be more helpful! Will definitely be returning!
I had an unusual request, which was to use their electric car charger. Although they had a lot of people in and were very busy, everyone was very welcoming and answered my silly questions patiently. The building and garden are very beautiful, and if I need to stay at a hotel in the area this will definitely be the one!
Unfortunately we coukd only stay the one night again but this time had a FABULOUS room upstairs with a balcony overlooking the lovely garden. My health has deteriorated and the hotel were kind enough to put my injection pen in their fridge for the day whilst we went out, very much appreciated Food again was good, though vegetarian choice a bit limited, but what I had (made specially) was very nice. We love this hotel it's not cheap but when something is worth the money it's worth paying for
Very comfortable hotel Big double room with tea, coffee, hot chocolate and mineral water. Big wetroom bathroom. Great meal, beautifully presented. The staff were lovely and friendly too. Just one gripe. We didn`t stay for breakfast as we felt it was very overpriced at £14.95 each.
Had the most pleasant of stays at this beautiful hotel. The room was huge with special touches to make our stay complete. Resturant food, was divine, and was so nice to sit in the lounge area and relax, whilst food was prepared. Staff very attentive and friendly. A truly lovely stay and will defiantly return.
we came to the steam fair and stayed here for one night we could not fault anything the breakfast had everything you could want and the evening meal was amazing the staff could not be more helpful the room was lovely
Have been staying in the Sherborne are for many years on average once a month on business, have previously stayed in centre of town but hotel has changed hands and is now over priced with minimalistic food offerings. Now been recommended to the The Grange. A breath of fresh air, friendly helpful staff who actually want you there.Rooms old but very good with all facilities, bed excellent. Evening meal a little standard but still good quality with reasonable portions. Menu needs expanding a bit . Breakfast good and delivered quickly so ideal for people on business who need to get moving. Excellent location with a nice garden to sit in and have a drink if weather suitable. Will defiantly be a regular guest here
This hotel never ceases to amaze us, every time we come, the starter menu has changed, and every time it is wonderful. Today we started with the best prawn cocktail we have ever tasted, the beef was cooked to perfection, the vegetables simply the best selection you could ask for, the sweet is always a winner, my wife loves the sticky toffee pudding, finishing with a lovely coffee and goodies. The staff are all very helpful and can't do enough to make your day. We have used this restaurant for forty years, and it has never been better, thank you John and Jenny !!
We wanted a relaxing few days in Dorset, Jenny and Jon are fine hosts and offer a relaxing country hotel stay, our room was superb and comfortable. The restaurant food is high quality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will hopefully return again in the future.
My son and his wife returned from Thailand, where they live, and visited for the day. We gathered at The Grange for lunch. Attentive service from Teresa who remembered us all from a visit some two years previously. I like the several different menus it is possible to eat from and there was a attractive selection of Vegan meals on the menu. The Chef had gone to a lot of trouble to provide such a varied menu for us. We chose a Rioja from the wine menu which proved to be excellent. The food could not be criticised in presentation nor in depth of flavours. We enjoyed a first class meal and thank you to Teresa and the Chef for making our meal so special.
The owners and their team were very welcoming, friendly and helpful and are definitely the icing on the cake for this hotel. The village is very pretty and access to Sherborne (my reason for staying) was very easy. The room and hotel facilities I used were very clean and the garden was a lovely place to chill and have lunch. I would not hesitate to stay at The Grange again or recommend to others.
Friendly hotel. Lovely rooms, nice large shower as well as bath. It was a warm day and room was warm, had to resort to taking duvet out of cover as far too hot to have a duvet on. A separate sheet would be a good idea. The grazing menu was all we needed for dinner and was fine. Nice grounds and lovely breakfast. Can recommend it.
Only spent one evening here, as just passing through, but would have been very happy to stay longer. Delightful hotel out in the countryside enjoying peace and tranquility. Really friendly team who looked after us.
We stayed here while visiting Sherborne for a wedding. Clean hotel, big room and has all the basic amenities you would need. There is a carpark directly behind the hotel. Price is a bit high but that is average for the area.
Good hotel tucked away about a mile from Sherbourne with ample car parking. We did not have the best of starts when the lady on reception did not seem to know what she was doing, but room was lovely overlooking the lovely garden, very clean with nice bathroom and shower, we found bed too hard. We booked bed & breakfast but had an evening meal one night which was excellent, great food and service. Breakfast was mixed, good help yourself buffet, but my wife had the made to order cooked breakfast one morning and the bacon was all dried up and sausage hard as though it had been standing for ages. Took us about 45 minutes to walk into town, so many things to do nearby.
We've been a couple of times since my last review but this time took my parents for a celebration of Dad's 90th last week. Had booked room 1 for them and 2 for us (become our usual). Friday was just the four of us for dinner and all was good, as ever. On Saturday we were joined by our son and fiancee as a surprise for his grandparents. The staff had decorated the table for the celebration and it all looked lovely. We all really enjoyed our meals - we all chose steak which was cooked as per all instructions. Then the cake I had made was brought out and the other guests joined in with singing Happy Birthday (including a wonderful visiting opera singer!). All in all, a wonderful evening made all the more special by the lovely girls on duty who are so friendly and attentive. Thank you so much, as always, to John and Jenny for their lovely welcome and for having such a friendly hotel. Thanks to Teresa (I need to see the wedding photos!), Sandie and all the staff. Bernard and Jacqueline will be back soon!
Friendly efficient check-in. Had booked a deluxe room and wasn't disappointed, the room and bathroom were spacious and bright, with a separate seating area to the bedroom with double aspect windows providing a lot of light. Was recommended to book a table at check-in which we did. Staff very attentive and friendly, food was excellent. Both had steak our first night, cooked just right. Good choice for breakfast, cold buffet with fresh fruit, yogurt, croissants etc, and then hot food served to your table. We left for our day out on the second day, and the hotel kindly phoned us to ask if we wanted to book a table for the evening. Good location about a mile outside Sherborne. Would definitely recommend.
This hotel was a real find. We were treating life long friends as it was our Golden Wedding weekend. Located in a very peaceful location, everything was as required. We had room 7 which was very comfortable, tea & coffee facilities, bathroom with good shower. Friends had room 11 which has access to garden & patio. All very clean. Dinner on both nights was outstanding in taste, presentation & content. Good wine also. Breakfast is made to order so no 2 hour old eggs on a buffet. Staff are very accommodating. The Owner, management & staff seem to have it just right. We would definitely stay again.
Like another recent visitor, part of me is loathe to leave a review for for fear of there being no vacancies the next time we wish to stay. The Grange really is a great place to stay; well appointed rooms, wonderful hotel team and a peaceful location to name but a few of the attributes. The hotel itself looks most welcoming but just wait until you encounter members of the team! They treat you as individuals, not "numbers" passing through.... engaging and interested but not intrusive. We stayed on a bed and breakfast basis. The breakfast service combines a cold buffet and hot items cooked to order. Despite being fairly busy, the breakfast service was prompt, efficient and friendly. (All the fayre is top-notch but do try the home-made granola!!) We have only just discovered this gem but shall most certainly be returning... our daughter lives about 5 miles away. The Grange is very handy for touring this part of the southwest. Sherborne itself is a pleasant town and the castles are well worth visiting. Stonehenge and the Jurassic Coast are both within easy reach as is the excellent London - Salisbury - Exeter train service via Sherborne Station. We look forward to returning soon and staying for longer.
Another splendid stay at The Grange at Oborne, Dorset, for 3 nights (22nd to 25th May 2018). We had room 4, which is a deluxe double with a 6ft 4-poster bed and a fabulous en-suite bathroom with shower over bath. Room 4 has a balcony overlooking the well maintained gardens. A beautiful wisteria covered the railings around the balcony. The first 2 days were sunny and warm and the balcony was the perfect place to sit in the afternoon. The room was lovely and clean. As on the 2 previous occasions we have stayed at The Grange, all the staff are helpful, friendly and efficient. The food was excellent and of good quality, our compliments to the chef. The appetizers served with our drinks prior to dinner were delightful and of good quality. So this message is to let you know how much we enjoyed our recent stay at The Grange. We would like to thank Jennifer, Jonathan and all their staff for making our stay a delight. I would recommend The Grange to family & friends if they were visiting that part of Dorset and wanted a quiet, friendly, with excellent food, hotel. Anne & Mick Gage
A hotel where the owner quite clearly cares about the quality of your stay, as indeed do the staff. Very welcoming, without exception all staff friendly and pleasant. Our room was well equipped, a comfortable bed and a wet room. The village is very quiet, very little passing traffic, so overall very relaxing. An excellent selection of guides to local tourist attractions and maps for local walks.
This lovely hotel is hidden away in a little village near Sherborne. The rooms are very comfortable, the gardens a delight and the service very friendly. It's difficult to find fault. There is parking on site. There is no lift so if necessary request a ground floor room. Highly recommended.
This place is such a find that we're rather reluctant to share how good it is. From making a late phone call the evening before until departure on Sunday, the customer service is outstanding. Nothing is too much trouble for anyone and that attentiveness seems to ooze out of the walls in this place. It's up a small track and it's so pretty when you arrive. The gardens are beautifully kept and everything is well maintained. Nothing here is ‘tired'. Meals were good and our room (12) was delightful. This is the best ‘Best Western'. Full stop.
We are staying nearby and this hotel was recommended to us so we booked Sunday lunch. When we arrived we found a really pleasant dining room together with a warm welcome. The food was excellent and the service equally so, everything done properly and efficiently, as good or better than the Michelin starred restaurant we ate in earlier in the week, and half the price. Close to Sherborne, just off the A30 through a charming hamlet, the restaurant is small so probably advisable to book.
This is a good hotel. The management and staff were friendly, with attention to detail. We had three categories of room, and all were spacious and comfortable. The village is attractive, and the hotel stylish, although they could do something about the pervasive smell of sewerage around the car park.
Excellent accommodation, great food & very welcoming Owners & Staff. Could not fault our stay. The Hotel is set in great open countryside with great walks & some nice Towns to visit including Sherborne & Stalbridge. The newer Sherborne Castle is also worth a visit.
I was at an event early in the morning at Sherborne Castle. This remotely located hotel is just a few minutes away. I arrived early, no problem checked in and given very nice room no 6. Comfortable bed, hotel shower, nice complimentary toiletries, soft towels. Great selection of drinks and beer from the small bar or relax in the comfortable lounge. Dinner was lovely, hot, timely served with a smile, restaurant overlooks well maintained gardens. The credit is all down to the helpful, friendly and diligent owners, who actually show interest in the customer, how many places can you still get that genuine service? I commend it to you and hope your stay will be as enjoyable as mine.
Although not on the beaten track, The Grange is well worth the extra effort to get to. The setting is lovely, the staff and rooms are excellent, the restaurant and the food are extremely good. Thoroughly recommended.
This hotel was booked so the family could meet there to celebrate a Christening, I must confess that when the Satnav sent me down a single track road I thought it had sent me the wrong way. Eventually we found the hotel and were warmly welcomed by the staff, after a discussion on the phone I booked room ten and was shown to the room. The room was large and well appointed having patio doors and overlooking a well manicured garden. The décor was neutral and everything was in good working order, there was a large screen TV with a good range of channels. The wifi was stable and ran at about 13mbps which is fine for video conferencing. The bed was large and comfortable with quality white sheets and duvet. The bathroom was clean and had a shower over the bath, there was a constant supply of hot water at a good pressure. The two things I noticed about the hotel were the friendliness of the staff and the cleanliness, everywhere was spotless and the cleaners need to be congratulated. The first morning we arrived at breakfast to find the dining room packed, the service was still friendly and acceptable, the full English was very substantial, well cooked and presented. The second morning of our stay breakfast was a little more serene. In the afternoon we met in a private room for the Christening Party, John the manager and his staff were attentive and helpful in making the occasion very enjoyable. The buffet they provided was excellent. I can fully recommend this hotel for its accommodation and its food.
Have just stayed here for a 3 night DB&B break and have had a brilliant time. Hotel is well run, room was spectacular and the restaurant was great both for dinner and breakfast. No problem recommending here to others and we hope to come back before too long.
We recently stayed here as we were visiting Sherborne for the weekend. I booked a Double Delux and the room was huge - felt more like a suite - which was fantastic as our daughter is used to her own room and was able to sleep that bit away from us rather than all stuck together in a small room. We ordered room service that evening due to having a sleeping baby and the service was wonderful as was the food! They brought each course up individually and we were both really impressed at the quality of the food on offer. They seem to have a lot of services and amentities you can take advantage of, which was also impressive.
WE both had roast Pork which was very nice My wife had smoked salmon starter which she enjoyed. I had cheese and biscuits and wine was South African and delicious. It was a very nice occaision jivfpufnpifynfyeqyfqyy8q8fynhundshufdsnhun8fpeyw8ny8nfynhpefwhudfuhdiyiyd8u9u0qu90u90eu9me[[
A lovely hotel in a picturesque setting. The staff are very warm and friendly and can't do enough to make sure you have a comfortable stay. My room was very clean and comfortable with lovely views of the surrounding countryside. If you have mobility issues, ask for a ground floor room as there isn't a lift. The breakfast and dinner were made from very good quality ingredients and were delicious. I will definitely return.
Had Sunday lunch today with the families to celebrate mums 80 birthday and it was perfect. Beautiful location and setting, fantastic and professional staff, beautiful dining room and food to rave about. We had the Sunday lunch meme three beautiful and mouthwatering dishes. I had homemade mushroom soup and warm roll to stat, followed by Salmon and perfectly cooked vegetables on the side finishing with dark chocolate torte and sorbe, to die for. Others had pate, to start, roast beef and Yorkshire puddings with a variety of sweets, mmmm. Certainly recommended with real compliments to the chef for a perfect lunch for a perfect lady.
Having heard good comments, decided to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary with lunch at the Hotel. Very attractive country house close to Sherborne. Friendly and welcoming staff. Pleasant dining room and very nicely prepared food. Looking forward to return visit in warmer months as there is a sheltered garden to explore plus a patio and outdoor seating area.
We found this hotel through the Best Western website as they were offering 30% discounted winter break. So very glad that we did. We were treated to two days of luxury staying in a huge bedroom with a four poster bed and fantastic bathroom. The hotel is full of character yet has all the benefits of modern living and is run by the owners to a very high standard. The staff are friendly and helpful in all ways. All in all a great weekend and we would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel to anyone wanting a peaceful and charming getaway.
Stayed one night as we went to watch a football match in Yeovil. It's location is perfect for a peaceful country retreat yet not far from the A30. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The room we had was a good size, at the top of the hotel with nice views. Very comfortable bed, a large bathroom, and all very well maintained. We didn't have dinner there but had a good breakfast and had a drink in the cosy bar and lounge. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel if you are looking for a comfortable, peaceful break. Looking forward to going back soon hopefully.
I stayed on Tuesday night at the hotel. The reception was attentive, the bar staff friendly and helpful and the restaurant staff prompt and good My room, number 7, was in the main house. It was billed as a standard double but was at least 50% bigger than an equivalent room in a standard chain hotel. It was very clean and tastefully furnished, the bed was king sized and comfortable. The menu in the restaurant was simple and classic English. I had a prawn cocktail and a rib-eye steak. (Yes I know) Both were excellent with a modern twist - the prawns had crayfish as well, the steak had splendid twice cooked chips. The wine list was exceptional in having eight half bottles and not just ordinary ones. I had a half of my favourite Rioja - Muga and the list had a half of Dr Loosens Riesling. I have never seen either in halves on a wine list before. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and the buffet was good. I really liked the Grange. It does simple really well.
Lovely and peaceful country location in Dorset. Hotel is well run with well trained and attentive staff. Very clean. Bedroom was classed as 'superior' and lived up to that description. Its quite small (in terms of number of bedrooms) so it feels exclusive.
Nice to find an English hotel of acceptable standard. Comfortable well appointed room, friendly approachable staff. Dinner B and B rates very good value for money. Good menu at dinner, and excellent breakfast.
This hotel is a great find! It is in a peaceful, rural location. We stayed here for four nights and we were not disappointed. Our room was extremely comfortable and we were provided with everything we needed, including a daily weather forcast which was posted underneath our door each evening! The food was amazing. We ate in the restaurant every evening and looked forward to our tasty breakfast . The staff were so attentive and friendly and the food was delicious! We appreciated the homely atmosphere and the attention to detail in equal measure. We would certainly look forward to returning in the future!
Superb venue, ample parking spaces, beautiful dining room, delightful staff, extensive wine list and varied menu with something for everyone. Thoroughly recommended for a family get together, we had a very enjoyable time.
Great place ,room amazing. Food was very so so . Microwave food. It needed a little more attention for price. The waitresses where good but a little bit more finesse would have been nice and made the stay 10 out of 10 things on the menu should not have to be microwaved
TheGrangeatOborne, Manager at Best Western Dorset Oborne the Grange Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for leaving a review. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay with us at the hotel, but obviously disappointed with your comments about the restaurant. I can assure you that the food is not microwaved! We have one small domestic microwave in the whole kitchen and this tends to be used for things like softening butter, not cooking food. I would be very interested to know why you thought this; i can be contacted at the hotel. Wishing you a very happy Christmas, Jon Fletcher
We recently had our staff christmas party at The Grange. It was such a wonderful evening, we had a room set up just for our party, it was beautifully decorated and the tables looked lovely. The food was amazing and the staff were very attentive and ensured throughout the night that we were happy. We then had an excellent disco after the meal which all the staff enjoyed. We would not hesitate to recommend The Grange and look forward to booking our Christmas Party for next year!! Jon and his staff did a fantastic job! Thank you very much The Grange
A very comfortable hotel with nice rooms. The staff and management are very helpful, but the food is not good. We stayed three nights had dinner on the first night and did not have another meal. Breakfast was just okay. On location l have put average, it depends what you require. This hotel is in a very small village.
We chose the restaurant at the Grange for celebrating our anniversary. We were not disappointed by the setting, or the flood. Although the "Autumn Menu" has only 4 choices for each of starter, main and dessert, each dish that we sampled was of the highest quality. The dishes were full of flavour, which made you want to savour every mouthful - which we did.
Last minute booking for business trip. Great hotel, professional and helpful, friendly staff. Rooms are spotless, comfortable and well proportioned. great selection to choose from in Restaurant (dinner & breakfast) sourced from local area. Such attention to detail, nothing seems to much effort. Was offered takeaway coffee and snack bars at check out. De-icer and scrapers available to use. Great experience, Will definitely book again and not just for business.
My partner and I had a wonderful one night's stay to celebrate her birthday. The room was very comfortable and well appointed. The staff were very helpful and polite. We were even personally show to our room. Situated about 2 miles from the centre of Sherborne, this is an ideal base to explore the area. The town is an absolute gem and the Abbey particularly worth a visit. Our package included dinner bed and breakfast. The food was excellent and the service “just right”. The scrambled egg was to “die for”. We thoroughly recommend this lovely hotel and will definitely return next year but this time in our Morgan so that we can fully enjoy the glorious countryside.
We stayed 2 nights in a wonderful room overlooking the garden with its own private terrace which I'm sure would be a great place to sit in the summer. Our room was very well appointed and spotless with nice touches like bath robes and a well stocked tea tray and coffee machine. On the landing was an honesty snack box and free toiletry bits if you forgot something, very handy! The very friendly staff were fantastic and nothing seemed too much trouble. The breakfast was very good with all the normal buffet selections and a great choice of cooked food on the menu. We also had dinner on two nights and lunch one day, all the meals were really good, well cooked and well presented, however it was a shame that with only four of the same main courses on the menu having three meals at the hotel was probably unwise, although there was a special also for one night. Overall this is a great little hotel with a wonderful vibe set in a lovely area. We would certainly return and
Stayed with friends 24 and 25 October. Rooms were lovely, exceptionally clean, comfy beds, warm - we felt at home and relaxed immediately. Nothing was too much trouble for Teresa and all the staff. Excellent customer service, regularly checking if everything was ok...such happy staff! We enjoyed eating at the hotel so much on the first night, we stayed 'in' to eat the next night. Everyone's food was excellent. We normally go out to a local pub to eat, but pointless to do that when staying at The Oborne. Breakfast was superb, both continental and cooked. Best kippers ever. To sum up, we had a great time at this lovely hotel - a big thank you to all the happy, hard working staff...wish we were going back this weekend!!!!
We had a very enjoyable three night stay earlier this month. John and Jennifer and their staff are really welcoming hosts and we enjoyed a lovely room with a four poster bed and two excellent meals in the hotel dining room. On two of the nights the Hotel was very busy as the Village had been "taken over" for Rosie and Titus' wedding but this didn't affect the speedy and friendly service. Oborne is a beautiful village and only just over a mile from Sherborne so we were able to tour Central Dorset and Somerset with ease. Recommended. We will return.
2 night stay for family wedding with our teenage sons. Great sized rooms with fab views and all the extras you could need. Delicious breakfasts. The staff won the day being so cheerful, friendly and helpful. Our shower was the only let down which ran intermittently, sometimes just a dribble. A very warm and friendly atmosphere
We stayed for 4 nights in this lovely quiet hotel in a first floor room. The staff were very helpful and pleasant even when we turned up for dinner without booking on a busy evening ! Breakfast were very goo with a wide range of freshly cooked food, fruit and cereal. We ate in the hotel each night choosing from the light menu twice and the full dinner menu the other evenings. I felt the dinner menu price was high but the light menu well priced. I would have given the hotel 5 stars if I could have kept the windows open but the foul odour from the septic tank in the car park had to be kept out!
Stayed five noghts this month with a group of 22 Have seldom experienced such a wonderful, comfortable hotel. Room was clean, tidy, spacious and the bed superb. Food to die for, 3 courses with 5 choices per course. Staff were so extremely polite and attentive at all times, it was difficult to remind myself that I was in the UK. I would recommend this little Gem to anyone!
A very warm welcome. The hotel is in a wonderful location. We had a superb bedroom, relaxed in the impressive lounge &dined that evening in the restaurant. The memu and food was fantastic with 1st class service. I have no hesitation in recommending The Grange. I would love to return!
My wife and I stayed two nights at The Grange. It is a very quiet hotel in a very rural setting. The room was excellent, well appointed, clean and well serviced. The restaurant was extremely good with a good choice of quality food. The staff were helpful and pleasant without being overbearing.
Situated at the edge of a lovely peaceful village up a narrow lane the hotel looks so inviting on arrival. We had a lovely reception from the young man when we checked in and were shown to our rooms quickly and politely. We had adjacent rooms on the top floor and they were both beautiful. Lovely views, super comfy beds ,well appointed and absolutely spotless. Both had great ensuite wet rooms too. First impressions count and they won us over in the first few minutes. We just relaxed like previous reviewers told us we would. We were booked in for dinner that night and it didn't disappoint. The lovely story about the gentleman who dined alone there every month kept us enthralled whilst enjoying pre dinner drinks and trying to choose what to eat. The restaurant is both formal and cosy, if that's possible and again everything is immaculately clean. The food was amazing, we enjoyed every morsel, from the parfait to the steak to the lemon posset , our daughters , whose birthdays we were celebrating loved it all . It was such a good choice for a surprise. Attentive and polite service throughout by the waitresses and waiter. The lovely waitress even knew what a miniature Guinness shot was , and we enjoyed them with our coffee after dinner in the cosy lounge. We slept wonderfully and can't fault the comfy beds etc. It is so quietI, I can't describe how lovely it is to have such peace. Great breakfast in the morning and again very attentive service. Cannot fault anything about this place . Just perfect. The little card about the next day's weather put under the door just says it all really . Next time we wil stay for longer and unwind properly. We loved it. Thank you , there is a heaven after all.
I booked at short notice having had a forced change of plans for a celebration weekend. Sam was so helpful in arranging a room, dinner and breakfast for us, it made our weekend special again! The room was a superior room on the top floor which gave us beautiful views over the countryside and was really quiet and peaceful. It had everything, and more, that we needed to relax for a very comfortable night. We didn't use the guest laundry room - but thought it was a great idea. Dinner was delicious with a full choice of 3 courses from the menu included in the deal and breakfast was a combination of buffet and freshly cooked to order. All through our stay we were treated to friendly and personal service which sealed our enjoyment of the weekend. As well as the hotel staff, we enjoyed the friendly cows and pheasants we watched from our room !!
I stayed at The Grange, Oborne for one night while on business visiting Yeovil. The location of the hotel is bit remote down a narrow side road, but it has a decent size car park, lovely gardens, comfortable rooms, and restaurant. My work colleague and I had dinner in the hotel restaurant and we we both really impressed. The quality of the food is superb, and it is beautifully presented, in a way you would expect of a top class restaurant. I had duck with mushrooms and plum sauce, which was absolutely delicious, followed by Bakewell slice and ice cream. For breakfast the next morning,I had smoked salmon and scrambled egg, which was also beautifully presented. Overall, the hotel is excellent, and I look forward to staying there again. It is priced towards the mid-high end, but its worth it.
Stayed here for 4 nights - wish it could have been longer. Nothing was too much trouble and all staff without exception were excellent. Restaurant was also good value - both a la carte and lighter bites. It is a bit out of the way, so internet/mobile is a bit slow, but peaceful surroundings more than make up for this. Only minor issue is that there can be smell from septic tanks, but it depends on wind direction, etc., and difficult to see how this can be tackled. We shall be returning.
From my first conversation with Jon, the Manager, to book our room, I knew it would be a pleasant stay. It was much more than that, happy boss and wife, Jenny, happy staff. Great room, great breakfast (we didn't need lunch) lovely evening meal, in good company. We stayed for three nights and really pleased we are returning for one night on our way home from Cornwall.
Lovely overnight stay in a good rural location. Customer service was amazing throughout the stay, the room was great and spotlessly clean. The pièce de résistance was the food. Amazing taste and presentation together with that customer service made for an amazing night away
My sons organised my 70th Birthday party at the Grange. It was really excellent. Food was very good and the service was the best. The staff were all very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The party room was plenty big enough and the tables laid to perfection. My hotel room was large and very comfortable, the breakfast menu was superb and cooked beautifully. I had a wonderful time as did the guests I would certainly go there again and recommend it to anyone.
We had tried to book this Hotel in the past and this time we were able to book a 3 night stay. The reception we received on a wet Sunday was outstanding and was a forerunner to excellent service throughout our stay. The room was perfect with a view of the rear garden. The Restaurant was great with excellent Breakfeast and evening meals. The Hotel is set in a beautiful valley and is very quiet and restful. If you want a peaceful stay with great service stay at this Hotel. We will certainly not hesitate to do so.
Stayed here for one night and just wish it could have been more - a beautiful building with lovely garden. At first I was a little disappointed with our room as it was below road level but it was BIG and had possibly the nicest wet room I've ever known. The receptionist seemed to be doing everything, when we discussed dinner and I wasn't sure about the menu choices she specifically asked the chef if he could do me a roast dinner minus meat, which he agreed. In the end we ate from the snacking menu which was perfectly adequate for us - the restaurant staff were excellent and attentive. We were lucky to visit on a gorgeous day and were able to sit in the garden which is lovely. They have fabulous rooms with a balcony and patio for special occasions - it would be a brilliant wedding venue. If we are ever in the area again I would definitely try to stay at the Grange - best western hotels can sometimes not be not entirely perfect, but this one is as near as you're likely to get.
Beautifully kept building and grounds. You can see why the staff won the customer experiences award this year. The room I was in was outstanding, clean and with a stunning view of the gardens. The breakfast was first class not like you get in some B&B. Jon and his team looked after us extremely well. Thanks to you all.
We loved our stay here. Beautifully kept, clean, spacious rooms. Stunning gardens. Staff very hospitable and professional. If you are after peace and quiet, you cannot go past the Grange. Food superb both at breakfast and dinner. Would highly recommend the Grange.
This Hotel is just perfect, lovely room, great food and wonderful service from the warm and friendly Staff. Dinner was excellent warm and cozy restaurant with perfectly cooked food. The breakfast was nice and relaxed with no pressure to finish and was served with a smile
My 6th stay & about 4th review. I can't keep away from this perfect rural hide-away, but that's because I don't want or need a spa or pretentious 'wellness centre', high-chairs at the dinner table or smarmy waiters. Tranquillity, pleasant easy mannered staff, immaculate rooms, food that is surprisingly sophisticated & a small cosy lounge area that looks out on a well manicured lawn & lush greenery. What more does one want? Should there be a wedding or meeting that all takes place in a separate area. I try to avoid a stay that clashes with such events at this & all hotels. Not for the hotel holiday snob or the young who need to be noisy fashionable & impress with fancy cars or expensive clothes, this is deepest Dorset where little impresses the inhabitants. The Best Western branding does this hotel many favours regarding attracting extra custom but given that in the UK BW does not have the excellent reputation enjoyed in Europe & the States sensibly The Grange soft pedal their connection. I wonder what excuse can I find for another visit soon.
Far from the noise of the cities, a quiet and green place to breathe. Clean rooms, maybe the bed too small and the bathroom tiny. Attentive service, very good food in a stylish restaurant. Very poor internet connection.
Stayed here over 2 nights. Excellent staff. Good food. Divine garden to relax in. Easy drive from Sherbourne. Well maintained hotel with modern'ish decor. Carpark may need to be bigger when events on, like weddings.
We were in Dorset for a family wedding and originally booked at a B&B nearby but after spending one night there, decided that we needed to move somewhere else! We called the Grange and they did everything they could to help us - they were very busy with a wedding but had two rooms available for us all. It being the morning of the wedding, they made sure that one of the rooms was clean and able to be used at 10.30am when we arrived so that we could change and get ready. They prioritised the other room and came to let us know that it was also ready, all in the middle of organising a large wedding function themselves. We returned in the evening and the staff found a quiet space we could have a drink away from the function and could not have been more helpful. The bed was comfortable, the shower was great and all was very clean and well maintained. Breakfast was also pretty flawless - a table had been reserved so we could all sit together and the food was very good indeed, again with amazing staff - many of whom we had seen working the night before at midnight! Overall, a well managed, caring and smart hotel that ironically cost less that the terrible B&B we left! Best Western's best kept secret indeed. We will be returning soon.
Shhh! Keep this to yourself as this is Best Western's best kept secret! This is truly a great place to say. It is small and yet perfectly formed as a hotel and gives the very best personalised service, for instance they put a card under our door each evening to tell us what the weather would be like next day. The small group of staff are very well trained and friendly and nothing is too much trouble. We stayed for three nights and the housekeeping was particularly good with beds made up whilst we were at breakfast – unheard of in many ‘posher' hotels and only ever found by us on cruise ships. This is a delightful place to stay and the restaurant is worth visiting in its own right as well.
We stayed from 11-14 July and had a fantastic time. The 200 year old hotel is tucked away, small, cosy, comfy and full of character. The hotel is family run and the staff are all personable, friendly and efficient. We asked for room 1 (disabled) and its wet room and shower chair made my stay easy. Yes it had a view over the car park but that didn't worry us. It's the little things that make the difference (good loo paper, book marks, up to date magazines, free WIFI and a card delivered each evening advising of the weather the next day). Nothing was too much trouble. The availability of canapés delivered to the room before dinner was readily agreed and made our stay special. Breakfast was varied and excellent and we were kept amused by the antics of the birds and squirrels at the bird feeder near the window! The "Grazing Menu" meant that light food was available most of the day. This is the best BW we have visited - and we've been to a lot! The lovely garden and outside seating encouraged us to linger. Upstairs rooms have a view over the garden. We loved it and we'll be back!!!!
Stayed here for one night prior to Yeovilton Air Show. Hotel was full and we only booked a couple of weeks before our visit. We were given room 1 which is on the ground floor. Good size with large wet room. Obviously suitable for disabled access. Unfortunately it is situated right by the hotel entrance which has a gravelled frontage so very noisy when anyone arrives on foot or in a car. Even noisier with the windows open! Also if you wanted daylight and privacy during your stay this wasn't possible. Of the two windows only one had a blind, which we couldn't work, the other window only had curtains. No issue with room comfort or amenities. Judging by other reviews the rooms on the first floor are much better so would advise you ask for one of these if you visit. Breakfast was generally fine. Bacon delicious! Didn't really like the poached eggs as too much vinegar for my taste had been put in the water prior to poaching but rest of food fine. Really lovely location for this hotel and staff were polite and courteous. Would stay again but would ask for a room upstairs.
The title says it all. The type of hotel that you want to tell all your friends about but are reluctant to share the location with as you wish to keep it as your special find. This is one of the most "at home" hotels I have stayed in world-wide. Well done The Grange Hotel team.
We got home from this hotel yesterday and would highly recommend it as it was very clean and comfortable and all the staff were very helpful. The food and the restaurant was also superb.Probably the best best western we have stayed in and we have stayed in a lot of them. Derek Harper and family
Excellent quaint hotel in the middle of Dorset set in beautiful surroundings , the room which got upgraded on arrival :) was very clean & spacious with a lovely balcony overlooking the garden I had a meal in the evening and the food was superb, also to top that ! the breakfast in the morning was top notch as well the staff were courteous & friendly I would definitely recommend a stay here again and will look to book again
Went the beginning of June 2017 First time at this place and must say I was very impressed with nice country surroundings with it being situated in a quiet country lane of the beaten track but well sign posted. We arrived late afternoon and found the hotel entrance court yard looking nice in the afternoon sun' the staff were very welcoming and helpful the room was very clean and tidy the food was as you would expect in a top hotel well cooked well presented, The outside gardens were all looking well keeper clean and very tidy our stay was well worth the price and would definitely stay here again
We got married at the weekend and had our reception at the Grange Hotel. The garden and hotel looked incredible. Jon and Jennie were fantastic at ensuring the day ran smoothly and that everyone was happy throughout the day. The food was superb, our guests raved about this saying they had never eaten such an excellent wedding breakfast! Breakfast in the morning was delicious too. The staff were brilliant always smiling and calm, nothing was a problem or an inconvenience. We can't thank the Grange team enough for giving us such a special wedding reception that we will never forget. Thank you so much!
So we stopped here for a meal , 10 of us and only my wife and I stayed the night . The staff were friendly , the room was lovely and clean , the garden was great for spending an evening in or waking up early and drinking coffee and reading a book in . The food was ok , no it was better than ok just not great , it did a job . The only thing that let it down was the service , the staff tried but lacked that bit of professionalism but they tried . On a plus note the coffee was lush .
Owner run, staff brilliant, food excellent and fab value for money. Superb wine list so spoilt for choice. Try the Lebanese red. Excellent. Well appointed large rooms with comfortable beds. Couldn't give rating above excellent cos there isn't one otherwise would've!!!!!!
Ended up at this fantastic resort by friends recommendation. Absolutely lovely for anyone who like to be outside city centre. Room was spacious and door to the gardens. Great value. The gardens are beautiful and so is the staff. Had an absolutely terrific dinner. Breakfast was good and gave us a good start for a new day. The service at breakfast could have been some faster and better, but all i all a fantastic stay. Conclusion: A Fairytale!
A great 2 nights at this excellent country house hotel. From when my wife and I visited this hotel in January everything about the establishment had a great feeling. Jonathan and his wife could not have been more helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were outstandingly clean and well presented. The restaurant was first class and both breakfasts and dinners offered excellent choices and food of a high standard. The end result meant that all of our team were delighted across the board. Well Done!,
Went with group of friends. All rooms beautiful, clean and comfortable. Super bathrooms and good linen and toiletries the food was outstanding, well presented, fair price £28 for three courses and clearly locally sourced and home cooked.
We spent 4 very happy days/nights in beautiful surroundings out in the country. We could not have been welcomed more - the staff were friendly and obliging, the facilities clean and comfortable and the food excellent and local. The general ambiance made us feel more like family guests than paying customers.
This hotel is 3 star with higher standards. Sparkling clean everywhere and super standard room facilities and restaurant. The location is in a typical English village with stream at roadside but within 5 minutes of Sherborne with all it's facilities and beautiful traditional town and abbey. Food was clearly important to the staff as dinner and breakfast choice is excellent.
A big thank you to all the staff for making a special weekend memorable. Superior room was perfect with balcony overlooking garden (shame the weather didn't allow full use). Dinner was very good. Thank you to the restaurant staff for all their efforts.
The Best Western Grange Hotel in Obourne was a wonderful place. Beautiful location right off the beaten track. We stayed 2 nights & have to say thank you to all the staff at the Grange. It was perfect. Lovely room, excellent food in the restaurant & set in such a tranquil setting. The attention to detail was exceptional. We booked quite late & were very lucky they had 1 room left .
We wanted to mark 25 years of marriage with something a bit more special than a trip to the pub and a takeaway and so booked a champagne break in a deluxe room with dinner. We could not have chosen a better place. Our room was exceptional, a four poster, the food delicious and unpretentious and we left wishing we had time to stay longer. We would not hesitate to recommend The Grange.
I first located this lovely hotel five years ago when arranging a school reunion & joint 60th birthday celebration for 9 friends & 3 partners. Yesterday we returned to celebrate again and nothing disappointed. The service is still superb - the location is delightful - the food is excellent and the rooms are wonderful. We'll be back for sure ... and maybe we won't leave it 5 years next time!
We had a nice one night stay here with my mother in law before our son's wedding in Sherborne. The hotel is in lovely quiet location in the countryside just a 3 minute drive from Sherborne. The welcome was friendly and the bedrooms comfortable and well furnished. We didn't eat dinner in as the family had a get together in Sherborne however the breakfast was very nice, freshly cooked and with a good selection to choose from. Wifi signal wasn't very strong in our room but fast in the lounge/dining areas.
We stayed here for 2 nights for a family wedding . Our room was great with a huge veranda covered in a beautiful wisteria which smelt amazing with the doors open. The staff and the food were all first rate . We will definatly go there again .
We had a lovely two night stay here with a very comfortable room, comfortable bed, good size bathroom (with bath), with room for everything in the room and bathroom. First class Wi-Fi. We were on a dinner B&B basis and the food was excellent, with the staff putting up with good humour with our fussy group constantly asking for variations of food. The evening meals were delicious, with a good choice and breakfasts were first class, with again plenty of choice and excellent service. Strange to put ice in the milk put out to go with the cereal so it was apparently horribly watery (I don't eat cereal) but there were jugs of milk on the breakfast tables as well so all was well. We enjoyed it so much we are already planning to go again on our own next time to explore more of the beautiful countryside in this pretty area - the combination of lambs in the fields, and blossom everywhere is irresistible. It is England at its loveliest best, with a super hotel to match.
TheGrangeatOborne, General Manager at Best Western Dorset Oborne the Grange Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the trouble to put a review on TripAdvisor. One technical note! The ice blocks that you noticed in the milk on the breakfast buffet table are artificial - not real ice! The blocks are frozen overnight and put in the milk in the morning to help to keep it cool. We put similar blocks in the orange and apple juice for the same reason. Once again, thank you for your review; I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and we look forward to seeing you here on a future occasion. Kind regards, Jon Fletcher
My family of four stayed at the Grange for two nights last week while we were on a 2 week vacation in England. It has to be one of the nicest and most picturesque hotels in southwest England and the staff were absolutely fantastic. The rooms are very clean and well kept and the dining facilities were beautiful overlooking the garden - and the food was great. The staff were very helpful to us as we planned our days and went out of their way to ensure we had a pleasurable visit. I cannot say enough about this property and the kind people there.
Four nights break in a beautiful room. The service was efficient and friendly. Food(including dinners) of a high standard. The location is delightful, in a tiny ,picturesque village, just a couple of miles from Sherborne and its magnificent abbey. Two very minor niggles- face washers should be provided and fresh orange juice would be nice with breakfast. Overall, we were extremely happy with our stay and certainly would be happy to recommend this hotel.
The last time I attended a wedding in April it had snowed and we had a snowball fight on the beach. We travelled on the Thursday from the midlands via Reading. the weather was glorious so the journey was long and hot finished by a lengthy torment of the Somerset unlevels. the sat nav told us to turn left down a sunken lane with grass down the middle some miles latter there it was. We were made welcome the main wedding party arriving on the next afternoon we booked a table and went to our goodly proportion room not too many steps for the "not making a fuss about my knee". After the shower and change a large gin and tonic consumed outside in the warm enough glomming admiring the garden and a gold crest frolicking in the illuminated fountain in the well kept garden we dined. My meal pork followed chocolate pudding with a large glass of house red explain why the were so many other covers in the restaurant. Will struggle to have a better meal in Dorset or anywhere else for that matter. The bed was comfortable and if it where not for the "I can't sleep without a window open" I would not have half woken thinking I had left the DAB radio on the test channel with its loop of the dawn chorous. This seamed louder that the massed sing along a Messiah in the Albert Hall . The hundreds of altos a wren marking his plot with the gold finch and Blue tits the pixicatto sops, blackbird tenors and ring doves popping a warning while the jackdaws and magpie fog horned the morning mist away. The great weastern frachise has set the bench mark for breakfast over the last thirty years. Here it was above average unfazed when I asked for black pudding with my smoked salmon and freshly made scrambled eggs. The hotel coped with gathering clans that evening putting a scrumptious buffet on so we could exploit the garden and bar talking ourselves silly. Another bountiful breakfast scrubbed up and off to the church in glorious sunshine to return to the wedding feast I had the crab starter, the grilled fish and sticky pudding. Seventy of us fed in unison food was sumptuous hot and the service swift and discrete. The English local white quite special. In the morning I eggs and bacon quickly so I was in time for the 1662 0800 4 miles away truly magic service after the night before. This is a very special place I fear I will never be able to get another booking when others cotton on.
We have just returned from 2 nights at this hotel. The staff are attentive and all are excellent, and out room was large and well furnished. The accommodation could not be faulted. I did not give the hotel 5* because I found the food to be too rich for me with little in the way of vegetables ( I do like a lot of vegetables though) , and the deserts uneatable because of their sweetness. I am sure, however, that many people would be delighted with the food - others in our party were very pleased. For this reason alone, I would not visit the hotel again, which is a shame, as the owners and staff have otherwise provided a very good experience. The village is quite rural, so neither the internet nor mobile phones work very well - neither the fault of the hotel of course, but the countryside and walks are lovely
Stayed the whole weekend for our son's wedding along with both families and friends. All the rooms were spacious and well appointed. Food for the Buffet supper on Friday and the wedding breakfast was superb and the service first class throughout. The grounds are lovely and thanks to the weather made a perfect location for the reception. The manager, Jon, and all his staff were helpful, efficient and well organised throughout the process and contributed greatly to the style and quality of the wedding. Everyone commented on the high quality of the rooms, food and service. Thank you so much for making a wonderful occasion - we can't wait to come back as "ordinary" guests and enjoy the facilities again.
The staff were so lovely and friendly especially to my twins of 5. The village is beautiful with a lovely walk around to the church. My room was so comfortable, and the price for the stay not bad at all.
My wife visited this hotel last year with her sister and enjoyed it so much that she wanted me to experience the hotel and facilities. Well she was right. We both had a thoroughly relaxing 2 night stay. The room and facilities were fine and the meals in the restaurant were superb. The gardens look extremely inviting and are beautifully laid out and lit at night and this contributes to the general ambience. Staff were all efficient and pleasant and the proprietor was always to hand and happy to converse with the guests. We shall return!
Great staff but I find rooms with sloping ceilings are awkward and banged my head twice. The very noisy electric shower in adjoining room at 5.30 am was rather a hard awakening. Breakfast was nice but a shame the mushrooms and black pudding were not hot. Sorry but at these prices I expect better. NOT impressed with the hard sell to buy dinner as it was "a busy night" only to find dining room was mainly empty!
So very relaxing. All you can hear is birds singing and cows moo-ing. If you want nightlife and a busy bar this place isn't for you. Lovely old place, friendly staff, great rooms and quite delicious food. This has to be THE bench mark for other country hotels. Not much of a mobile phone signal as low down in a valley but good WiFi makes up for that. Its a bit off the beaten track but well worth it! Superb!!!
Really liked this hotel, it was like staying at a family members house. Everyone I met here could not have done more to be more helpful. Bedroom and bathroom were comfortable and clean. The attention to detail in the bathroom with the amenities was better than in some 4/5 star hotels. Breakfast good with lots of seemingly local goodies. Would definitely stay here again next time I am in the area.
We held a charity event at the Grange, the staff were incredibly helpful and accommodating. The food was brilliant, the serving staff were efficient and professional and the event went really well. We also stayed the night and were very impressed by the hotel room, especially the shower! The morning breakfast was just what we needed to get us ready for the day ahead. overall an excellent stay.
This is the second time I have stayed at The Grange and on both occasions the staff were welcoming, friendly and thoroughly professional at all times. The room was exceptionally comfortable and clean with a generous hospitality tray - various teas, coffee and biscuits - and toiletries provided. The dinner menu choice was excellent and cooked to perfection, as was the breakfast. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, situated in a beautiful location and surrounded by open countryside, but within walking distance of the town of Sherborne, with its variety of interesting shops. I'm looking forward to my next visit.
I was the conference organiser for both an evening and a breakfast event and our team stayed at the hotel overnight. Jon and his staff were thoughtful- changing rooms for a disabled team member and attentive- adapting our food orders for the events right up until the last minute. The food was presented attractively and tasted wonderful- highly recommended.
We were there this morning, as a guest, for a business presentation which included breakfast. The location is rural but very easy to access from the A30, the venue was very nice, a superb full English and continental breakfast and very pleasant staff. I would definitely recommend this venue for any such meeting or even just popping in for an afternoon coffee!
We had a wonderful overnight stay. Not sure if we were upgraded but the room was far better than I would have expected for a standard double with patio doors leading to the garden. The staff were very friendly and the receptionist took us to our room, which was just as well as it would have been difficult to describe the route! The restaurant had a very good menu and food was delicious. The only criticism would be that it was run with only one a half staff. This was for the bar (which was in a separate room), the lounge where we had our pre-dinner drinks and studied the menu and the restaurant itself. We had quite a wait before we could order our drinks and the service slowed down considerably after we were served the main course. Breakfast was well organised with most things done on order. No pastries though!
After researching various places to host our sons wedding we realised as soon as we spoke with Jon, the manager of The Grange, that this was the venue to settle on. We were not disappointed. In fact, the whole event, wedding ceremony, reception etc was above and beyond our expectations. This was made possible by Jon's enthusiasm, insight and experience with such occasions. He made us feel relaxed, whilst he explained what was on offer, pitfalls to be wary of and positive suggestions to ensure the weekend was a success. Nothing seemed too much trouble, and Jon gave as much of his time as was needed to answer our queries. During the wedding day Jon,Jenny and team were always on hand to give advice and assistance. The staff worked with precision, were thoughtful and friendly. We were made to feel very much at home and calm at what can be a stressful time. My husband and I cannot stress enough what a fantastic setting The Grange is,and what is more important, what a wonderful and competent team it has! The accommodation was faultless, spotless, and so comfortable. Thank you Jon, Jenny and team for an experience not to be forgotten!
I found this hotel after much research. We needed a country hotel with good facilities for the disabled, particularly with a wet room equipped with all the aids to assist safe use of the bathroom. This proved to be the case when we arrived and made use of the roomy ground floor bedroom (with the requested twin bed arrangement). Despite arriving at the end of a busy Sunday lunchtime, we were swiftly and warmly welcomed and shown to our room, which was immaculate. We were soon at home in this well run family owned hotel. Jenny and Jonathan were very professional, friendly and helpful and all the staff reflect this attitude to the guests. The service throughout was excellent and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
We had a great time here for a friend's wedding. Staff were very friendly and felt like nothing was too much trouble. Did a great job making sure reception dinner ran smoothly and breakfast in the morning was lovely. Thoroughly recommend, rooms were very clean and comfortable
We arrived after travelling over 3 months throughout Europe & Uk staying in various levels of accommodation along the way. We were pleasantly surprised when the receptionist said we've upgraded you as we're not that busy tonight. Lovely large room with balcony fireplace all amenities and comfy bed. Dinner was line dining in beautiful surrounds. Staff very helpful only regret was not being able to stay longer. Definitely return to explore the area.
I stayed at the Grange for a school reunion. It is in a small village only a mile or so outside Sherborne. The Grange is certainly one of the better hotels in the Best Western group, Bedrooms were spacious and well equipped. The quality of food in the restaurant for our evening meal was superb. We strolled round the attractive gardens which are tastefully lit at night and are visible from the conservatory-style restaurant, We were well looked after at breakfast and all our tastes were catered for. We hope to come again another time.
We had a lovely few days away at The Grange. We wanted to visit family in Bruton,Dorchester & Weymouth, so the Hotel was situated just about in the best area for our visits. We had room 3 on the first floor, with our own private terrace. It was beautifully decorated and very comfortable. Our only criticism was the lighting, which was very dim. It was almost impossible to read at night, so a brighter bedside lamp would be nice. This didn't spoil our stay though. We booked B&B but they managed to accommodate us for evening meals, probably as it is out of season, may be difficult during the summer months . Breakfast was very good ,lots to choose from and set us up for the day. Our evening meals were fabulous. The staff all extremely pleasant and helpful. We wouldn't hesitate to go back again.
We stayed at The Grange overnight on our way back from Cornwall as a half way point. I booked a ground floor disabled room. The only disconcerting aspect was that the room faced directly onto the hotel entrance, where cars were being unloaded directly under our window. That aside the room was spacious and comfortable with the bonus of a tea tray provided in the room. There was a very comfortable 6' bed and a large wet room with the facility to add hand rails as required. We had booked dinner, bed and breakfast and it was good value for money. Our food allergies were easily dealt with, and all the staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. Would definitely return for another visit if we were in the area again.
Position and facilities are superb and the hotel is too good to use as just an overnight stop en route to Cornwall as we did, indeed we wish we had stayed longer. The bedroom we occupied was excellent and very comfortable and could not be faulted at all. The Management and staff were without exception very helpful and did everything they could to make our stay a pleasant one. We would also recommend the restaurant which served us dinner providing us with good food in very comfortable surroundings. All in all a delightful hotel.
Our guests and ourselves had a fabulous time and enjoyed a very delicious all vegetarian wedding meal. The chef made the delicious cake (more Italian than English) that I wanted and the whole staff were wonderful and friendly. We could not have had such a perfect day without Jon the manager because he was so supportive and meticulous. We really recommend it.
A lovely hotel set in the quiet hamlet of Oborne. The hotel is superb. The staff were all extremely helpful...nothing was too much trouble. The room I had was lovely with views out over either side. Lovely decoration. Huge double bed. Very clean and tidy. The hotel has an extraordinary amount of information about local attractions with leaflets and also write ups by the staff. A library of info rather than the usual rack of leaflets. The food in the hotel restaurenty was superb. Beautifully presented andf cooked to perfection. The mango Eaton mess was out of this world! The menu changes every day. If you are looking for a base from which to explore Dorset then you won't find better than this. Someone in our group needed a ground floor room with disabled access and they said their room was equally as good. The lounge, bar area and dining room are all step free access from the drop off outside the hotel main entrance. I certainly hope to go back.
We had an overnight stay here en route to North Devon. I tend to choose Best Western hotels as we reckon they are of a good standard. We were not disappointed...the approach through the delightful village was a pleasant experience, and We received a very warm welcome on arrival. When we return I would ask not to have Room 5. It is a lovely room overlooking the garden, but there is noise from the kitchen fan. Yes, it goes off at ten pm, but I would prefer a quieter room. We enjoyed a very pleasant dinner, and a very good breakfast. I would definitely recommend this hotel.
We got married here aug 26th and our day was perfect. John the manager was so accommodating with all our requests and nothing was ever to much. He was always happy to meet with us and discuss plans for the wedding day, even at short notice. The day ran so smoothly and was everything we wished for. The food was fantastic we had 4 choices on our wedding menu all of the guests commented on how much choice there was and the food was cooked to perfection. Even breakfast in the morning was delicious. The hotel is very clean and tidy and in a beautiful location. The garden in stunning for photos and very well kept. John the manager is always one step ahead - making the day run perfectly. The staff decorated our tables, and set up the room exactly how we asked. He even wore a pink tie to fit in with our colour scheme. The grange is a family run business johns wife jenny was also lovely, she came to collect the bridal party from the room when we were ready and reassured the groom and guests as I was 40 mins late for the ceremony(due to hair and makeup overrunning). Even though I was late john allowed us extra time for our photos and he was really laid back about the delay. Being such a friendly, laidback couple allowed us to enjoy our day and made us feel really relaxed. I wish I could do the day all over again as it was such a lovely venue, brilliant food, friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Thank you Jenny and John for our perfect wedding day xx
What a gem! We were warmly welcomed into two comfortable rooms which overlooked both the gardens and the delightful countryside beyond. The food was excellent and the choice of menus suited us exactly. Despite the hotel being clearly busy, the staff found time to do those thoughtful extras that make all the difference. The surrounding countryside is lovely and for those with a a fondness of the English countryside at its best let the Sat-Nav take you there. The Dorset lanes and byways come from a different age. Overall highly recommended. We will be back.
It is always a very pleasant feeling to be recognised when you return to a hotel and to discover that yes, the whole experience is as good as you remember. Jon and his team sort out special requests without fuss and consequently friends who have joined us here in the past are also returning. Well appointed rooms are maintained properly and just in case anything should go wrong, a note to housekeeping will solve any problems. Forgotten something? A 'treasure chest' on the landing provides a selection of toiletries. Menus can be adapted to suit dairy-free etc. and the whole experience is a pleasure. Previously we stayed here as a group of 12 using rooms right across the price range and everyone was happy. Well done to the team!
Delightful family run hotel in tranquil surroundings. A beautiful garden. Excellent accommodation, food and customer service. Very good disability accessibility with very good wet room for disabled people.
I stayed at this hotel for business and although there was no phone signal and the internet was weak this is certainly not down to the hotel itself. I loved the quirkiness of the hotel which was immaculately clean and the staff were delightful. Dinner was really good too and the restaurant didn't feel imposing as a lone lady traveller. Great for a break to explore the area - I suggest having Whatsapp on your phone to make and receive calls.
We go to this hotel regularly because we like it. We decided to book a room as well this time and it was wonderful. We had a private balcony with wicker furniture and Wisteria around the handrailings. We overlooked the gardens which are lovely. The meal was great although I had steak which I found difficult to chew but my wife said my teeth are rubbish because she could eat it perfectly well. Breakfast was of course very nice. I had a half bottle of Beaune with my steak which is always very nice here,
Nice hotel in a very very calm city All personnel is very kind and Jon is there for managing everybody. Breakfast : you have to order and it can be long so if you have in a hurry come early Diner : restaurant is always full as the food is nice , check availability Room : clean , big as well as the bathroom
From the moment you enter the Hotel you are made to feel like an old friend. From the Managers Jennifer and Jonathan and all the staff you are made to feel very, very welcome. The room was very clean and tidy, a large comfortable bed. The bathroom is of a good size, again very clean and tidy. The room altogether was of a very good size, plenty of room to move about. The food is of a very high standard, from evening dinner to breakfast. Good quality ingredients cooked to perfection. The Hotel has a nice private garden to sit out in plenty of chairs and tables. The bar area is small but there is plenty of seating in lounges around the bar. All in all an excellent hotel to stay.
This gem of a hotel just five minutes drive from Sherborne in Dorset was a real find. Lovely room, wonderful food, friendly, helpful and professional staff. If you want to be cosseted in a lovely country house style hotel, set in a in an idyllic and beautiful rural location, with all that Dorset has to offer within easy reach. Then this is the place for you. Throw in the best food we can remember having in a English hotel - then the Grange at Oborne is the place for you.
Absolutely nothing to critise. Location; Reception ;Staff;food excellent. Room spacious with a wet room shower and toilet all very well maintained Used to come here many years ago still the same not even effected by change of hotel brand Best Weston
This hotel is a gem. Our first stay in Dorset and we were delighted with our choice. Our superior room was large, clean and well maintained with a queen bed. Staff were friendly and most helpful throughout the hotel. Breakfast was fine; no complaints. The evening meal was cooked to perfection. It deserves its reputation. Would we stay here again? Most definitely. Thank you all the staff we met.
lovely hotel with great staff will try and fit another stay here, only had a one night stop but hotel room was big ,clean and overall look was good ,even when you leave could have a snack and hot drink to go ,nice touch,
Tucked away in the Dorsetshire valleys this gem of a boutique hotel has everything going for it. It didn't disappoint. The staff were welcoming and the bar and restaurant services were exemplary. ideal base for seeking out local tourism attractions and national trust properties.
I am a delivery driver and have been since January. I spend three nights a week in hotels and The Grange is by far the best hotel I have stayed in and that is not just for the amenities which are great but the staff and owners bend over back words to make your stay as comfortable as possible! Nothing is too much for any of the staff! The hotel is sat in spectacular surroundings and I would like to thank the hotel and staff for making my stay not just pleasurable but memorable! Thankyou john,Rudy,Georgie and Natalie AWESOME p.s this hotel is on a quiet road so sleep like a log too
I needed a hotel around the Yeovil area at short notice due to an unplanned meeting. What I managed to find was this little gem tucked away in the middle of nowhere! Fantastic peaceful setting with the most polite and attentive staff you could wish for. My room was lovely and the finishing in the wet room / bathroom was of the highest order. However this was nothing compared to the food on offer. Dinner was superb, the quality, presentation and overall service in their restaurant was worth the 220 mile trip alone! The 2 young ladies serving were a credit to themselves and the hotel, they were polite, funny and willing to engage in conversation - not really that common in my opinion in most hotels here in the U.K. Breakfast again was of the highest quality and again the service was excellent. Without a doubt I will stay in this hotel again, just not soon enough!!!!
This is a gem of a hotel in a tiny village about a mile or so from the historic town of Sherborne. I am slightly disabled and was given a large ground floor room with fully accessible bathroom with all the necessary facilities. The room was spotlessly clean and there was plenty of drawer and cupboard space for both of us. All the staff were lovely and could not have been more helpful and friendly. There are two disabled car parking spaces near the front door, but most guests must park in a adjoining car park which means a short walk. There is a small bar and comfortable lounge where you can enjoy a drink. The restaurant overlooks the hotel gardens which are beautifully maintained. The dinner menu had variety, but was not extensive; there were few items for those with a smaller appetite. We would certainly stay here again and have no hesitation in recommending the hotel and its excellent management.
What a wonderful venue for a wedding. Our daughter and son-in-law got married bank holiday weekend and Jon and Jenny, along with their lovely staff, did us very proud for the reception and a two night stay, along with a lovely meal on the Friday night before the wedding. Everything was just perfect and nothing was ever too much trouble for them. Jon paid so much attention to all the details and had it 'spot on'. The food was outstanding. The venue itself with its lovely garden was so personal, and the service was impeccable, always so polite and with a smile. The rooms were lovely with everything you would need. Everyone had a wonderful time and all told us so. Would definitely recommend this place to anyone.
Lovely hotel in the middle of nowhere, but 6 miles from Yeovil. Well-appointed and well-maintained rooms. Mobile reception difficult in room but OK in car park - free internet compensated. Would definitely stay again if in area and might try the food!
we arrived late due to Friday traffic greeted with a friendly smile from lady booking us. in very helpful .the room was amazing huge .i am 6 ft 3 .The bed was bigger than a king size. very swanky en suite nice views from our bedroom window.. you sit down drinks served on a sliver tray/ before you enter the restaurant another gem. we had 3 courses huge portions waiting staff on the ball making your dining experience memorable, in the morning . the breakfast fit for a king so much choice. f i
We cannot thank Jon, Jenny and the staff enough, for all they did not just on the day, but in the planning and preparation of our wedding. We had the most amazing day with friends and family and we took over the entire hotel!! We had wonderful rooms, delicious food and fabulous service. The hotel is stunning and surrounded by peaceful countryside, the ideal place for a Dorset wedding!! We thank you ever so much and look forward to our next visit to The Grange.
John and Jenny at The Grange have just arranged the most beautiful wedding for our daughter. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff were amazing and the food was to die for. We had the whole hotel to ourselves and everyone loved their rooms and the setting. Our families have sent me so many compliments about the venue, the service and the food. We could not have had a better wedding if we had been royalty. My huge personal thanks to Ken, Karenza, John and Jenny for making us all feel so special and welcome. If you are planning a wedding in beautiful Dorset, look no further than the Grange at Oborne. They will do you proud.
Stay regularly. Staff very friendly and welcoming. Beautiful surroundings. Disapointed with the food. Requested healthy options but none. Not a chicken breast in sight! Couldn't even have a salad as none available without dressing. If they could sort out a low fat/calorie option it would make me very happy as genuinely like this hotel.
The Grange recently hosted the wedding reception for my daughter and her husband. We had the whole hotel for the weekend and what a wonderful weekend it was! Many of us arrived on the Friday afternoon and from then on, nothing was too much trouble for Jon, the manager, or any of his staff. All of the staff without exception were wonderful – cheerful, accommodating and happy to provide anything that was needed. The Grange is a most wonderfully comfortable hotel – it felt as though we were holding the wedding reception in our own home and gardens! The food was superb, both for the wedding breakfast and during the evening barn dance. Many of our guests who are not familiar with Dorset asked where we had managed to find such a wonderful venue! In fact, we were made to feel so relaxed that on the Saturday when the photographer came to take pre-wedding photos, he wondered if he had come to the right wedding as everyone was so happy and calm. The Grange was a marvellous venue for my daughter and son-in-law's wedding and I would thoroughly recommend it. A massive thank you to all the staff for helping to make it such a perfect weekend.
This was the second time we have stayed there and would stay again. The Hotel and all the Staff make you feel just like you are staying at a friend house where nothing is too much trouble. Would I recommend the Hotel to friends? well that's an easy one... Yes To the Staff all I can say is thanks for making our night there and good night and keep up the hard work :-)
Sunday lunch was a real treat as usual. Food and service were excellent. The beef was tender, the pork melted in the mouth. This time we managed it all - so the dog was out of luck! We will definitely be back again.
The Grange is ideally situated to take advantage of the beautiful rolling countryside and charactful villages. Shaftsbury ( Hovis advert village ) and Sherbourne are close by. Sherbourne founded in the 8 th Century has mpuch to offer. Very helpful information in reception at the Grange. Research of their library over a juice or a gin and tonic or a pint of Wadworth in the garden is time well spent. John and his staff were very helpful in planning our days in the area. All the staff were well motivated and seemed happy in their work. One of the staff had a birthday party dinner and it was testament to all concerned that they had decided to have it at The Grange. From an accommodation perspective ,they are a busy wedding venue, so this should be taken into account if looking at weekend stays. Some of the rooms have sliding door access on to the garden. But all the rooms are beautifully finished and immaculately kept. Dining at he Grange must have a good local reputation as it was well supported each of the nights we were there. The menu was good, and included local produce. Generous meat portions. Although the the Grange was 2 miles from two delightful villages we decided to eat in for the 3 night stay. If you eat out a car would be essential. We will return to this hotel.
We were booked into The Grange for my niece's wedding for two nights. We had room 7 and it was very comfortable with an enormous bed and lovely views looking over the village and Dorset countryside. The food for the whole weekend was well prepared and presented, especially as the wedding reception was a sit down meal for over 80 guests. John the manager went out of his way to be helpful on every count, and all the staff made our stay very enjoyable.
A fantastic hotel with dedicated and accommodating staff. Stayed for a wedding and nothing was too much for the team. Stayed in room 5 which was comfortable and had ample space for 2 bridesmaids to get ready! Thank you for a memorable and enjoyable weekend
Lovely rural location, yet convenient for local attractions to suit all tastes. Rooms are spacious, well presented and clean, with classic furnishings and yet have all the necessary modern facilities and equipment. Quality food is freshly prepared and served from an interesting menu, both for dinner and at breakfast-time.
Sat Nav does'nt want to take you to hotel but it is well sign-posted from village. Welcome was a little too laid back as not much info given and no Wifi code in room. Went back to Reception who said it wasn't that good and they were right. It's definitely a "food place" as there was an unpleasant cooking oil smell on arrival but luckily this hadn't made it to the room. The room was pleasant but a little old fashioned. The tea and coffee tray was very nice. The stand out from the visit was the breakfast - excellent cooked breakfast. I wouldn't stay at the hotel again but would definitely go back to see if the restaurant in the evening was as good if in the area as the breakfast made that much of an impression!
This is a lovely hotel with great friendly staff and super food. The hotel is situated off the beaten track, but is easily found curtsey of sat nav and good signposting off the main road. Friendly welcome at reception and shown to room. Room 7 was bright and clean and welcoming. Large comfortable bed. note sheets and blankets which was a novel experience ....but a comfortable nights sleep We ate in the hotel, the restaurant was busy with both residents and visitors which spoke volumes. The food was excellent and good portions. The wine list was comprehensive and reasonably priced ...we had a great Dorset english white wine. All staff were charming and efficient. They displayed sense of humour and genuinely seemed to be enjoying their work. We observed a couple who had dietary requirements which was handled in a very professional manner, with all options explained including provision of non menu items. breakfast again matched expectations set the previous night. a couple niggles that prevented the perfect score not being provided automatically with the internet wifi code - especially when no mobile signal ...hey was in the depth of rural countryside and sheep aren't customers yet! missing tea and coffee sundries from room but promptly rectified when mentioned to member of staff ....quote I will check which "plonker" hasn't put them in room! the over bath shower head ...a cheap B and Q special which shot water over end of bath straight on floor.. investment on a better quality shower head will save on future maintenance saying that overall experience was excellent, the staff demonstrating great customer service and we felt valued guests. would wholeheartedly recommend this hotel

Many thanks for taking the time to write a review about our hotel. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. I am sorry that you missed the information about the WiFi password. It is displayed on a notice at reception, in the bedroom folder and is printed on our restaurant menus. You very kindly commented on the staff's sense of humour - I think the receptionist's reference to one of her colleagues being a 'plonker' was a little tongue in cheek! The shower head in your bathroom is made by Grohe - it is not from B & Q! However - thank you for pointing out the potential problem; we will adjust the water pressure to improve the flow. I stayed for a Sunday birthday party function with about 50 guests, half of whom stayed the night. The whole day and night from what I could see ran incredibly smoothly. The hotel is lovely and in a beautiful setting. The food was excellent, the staff were great. I would have liked to stay for breakfast but had to shoot, however I hear from ohther guests that it was of a similarly very high standard. My bedroom was lovely - beautifully furnished and the bed was extremely comfy. There were a few touches that weren't quite right in the room such as a broken shower fitting and a lamp not working. Also the clock radio went off, untuned-in crackle, at full volume at about 5am, and then again half an hour later. Hell of a shock it was. Everything else was so good it's worth 5 stars, but with that little more attention to the room being right it would have been one of the best hotel stays I've ever had. Still very highly recommended.
The Grange is sited in the delightful hamlet of Oborne, just outside Sherborne. The building is characterful and has a tranquil atmosphere. We decided to use this venue for a party to celebrate a special birthday for my Mum. It turned out to be an outstanding decision, as I can only congratulate Jon, Jennie and their team on what has become a day that we and all of our friends will remember for a long time. The function room was comfortable for the 48 guests that enjoyed a most excellent, well conceived buffet lunch that would rival many other establishments. The standard of presentation of the food and drink, along with the amazing service ensured that everybody thoroughly enjoyed the event. The attention to detail shown by the hotel, and the ease with which the day progressed made everything so pleasant and relaxed. I would make special mention of the staff, who go the extra mile to ensure that their guests want for nothing. Whilst many of them are very young, it is refreshing to see that they are well schooled in service and are happy to offer help, efficiently and professionally at all times. I have to be honest that I have stayed at other Best Western hotels in the past, and been rather disappointed at the quality of the rooms, the food and the general service levels. This cannot be levelled in any way at the Grange who really do make efforts to see that their customers and guests really do have a great experience. The rooms are well appointed and maintained, offering a delightful "country house" style feel. The bathrooms are modern, clean and well lit. If you are thinking of visiting the Sherborne area, make sure you consider this hotel as some of the others in the area appear to offer similar facilities, but in my opinion fall rather short of the high standards of the Grange at Oborne. Treat yourself!
Our third stay at this hotel, which we love for the peace & quiet. This time we celebrated our Pearl Wedding Anniversary, then my birthday a couple of days later. Our son & daughter-in-law came with us this time and loved the place too. We both had lovely rooms on the ground floor. We ate in on two nights, and in Sherborne on my birthday. The hotel arranged the restaurant and taxi for us, which was so helpful. Choice of menu in the hotel is a little restricted but well prepared. Breakfast - especially my bacon sandwich complete with firework candle and singing staff! - was lovely.
After making the mistake of booking the bakehouse in Selbourne we escaped to The Grange. Even their smallest room was excellent, all the staff were so helpful and engaged. Breakfast was awesome and dinner superb. Can't rate them highly enough. Special thanks to Sam who really went out of her wat for us. We will be back.
We have organised a weekend away for friends for the last 22 years and this was one of the best. From the beginning Jon, the manager went out of his way to accommodate us. We all had very good rooms, some with lovely views of the attractive garden. The food was delicious and the staff extremely polite and helpful. Oborne itself is a pleasant little hamlet with the stream running through, certainly a place to go back to. Thank you all. Sally and Tony
A group of sixteen old friends, we have shared a few days away for the past 22 years and this was certainly one of the very best. The hotel is charming and very comfortable and we were all very happy with our rooms. The bathrooms were well fitted and we appreciated the warmth everywhere especially as it was very cold outside. We were given a room to ourselves for our dinners so we could make as much noise as we liked! Both the breakfasts and dinners were excellent although the portions were on the large side for us oldies. The owners and staff were brilliant and could not do enough for us. On a personal note, I went down with a bug and they did everything they could to help me through a difficult 36 hours. Rating: between very good and excellent.
We arrived on Friday with 3 ,80 ish parents in tow , hoping to give our parents a lovely time as they had a rough year last yr including loss of my Dad ,mums 1st trip without him. From the moment we arrived nothing has been to much trouble, the food excellent, presentation wonderful, Staff fantastic warm friendly happy and very sociable. Mostly young staff and they have been brilliant with our parents in a time when you have to question the attitude of some of younger generation, these guys rock and do the hotel proud . We're here till Monday and have loved staying here . Thank you to all the staff for making our stay so enjoyable .
Had Sunday lunch a couple of weeks ago for Mothers' Day. Very friendly welcome and pre-lunch drinks were arranged quickly. I had the prawn cocktail with a twist and it was delicious. The main was roast pork which was beautifully tender, the crackling was crunchy, the vegetables were cooked well. My only very minor niggle was the roast potatoes which could have been a bit crisper. As it was a large portion I just couldn't fit in a dessert, which I had been hoping to do. We will be back later when I can find an excuse.
My Wife and I had the pleasure of both celebrating our wedding day at The Grange at Oborne, we choose the venue for it's charm, location and the little country hotel feel. It did not disappoint as our wedding day was truly faultless, much thanks to Jon and Jenny who made the day so incredible, as with all the staff at the Hotel. We can't thank Jon & Jenny and all the staff enough helping to create a memorable day for us. The hotel is a fantastic place to get married, the food was amazing and the rooms clean, comfortable and homely.
We stayed here for four nights. The rooms were lovely - I say rooms because we had to change the first one because the bed was too hard for us. The rooms were well appointed and spacious. Breakfasts were good, plentiful and tasty but the dinners left something to be desired. A nice touch was an appetiser before the meal but the mains generally suffered from being piled up in a column and overwhelmed with strong sauce. vegetables were in there somewhere but I missed them. The difficulty I had was due to being allergic to cheese and, like so many restaurants these days, it seems four fifths of the dishes have cheese in them. The steak dish was okay as the sauce came separately and it was served with chips. I had to ask the staff for help and I could choose from the lunch menu after a day or so . The staff were helpful and friendly.
We stayed one night in this lovely hotel for a visit to Sherborne School. We were warmly welcomed by friendly staff and enjoyed a drink in the bar followed later by an excellent dinner in the attractive restaurant, and enjoyed the best chips we have had to compliment a perfectly cooked steak. The lounge was inviting with big sofas and an open fire, very welcome on a cold evening. Our large comfortable room was enhanced by a well equipped bathroom, towelling robes and good toiletries. Plus a cafetiere for fresh coffee and great shortbread biscuits! Also, an unusual and extremely thoughtful touch, fresh coffee is available in reception to take away on departure. Great idea!! Highly recommend this charming hotel.
We spent one night here on a quick visit to Sherborne. Could definitely have stayed longer. Delightful dining room with carefully prepared and presented food, served by friendly young and well trained staff. Quirky decorating touches made for interesting surroundings in the bar area, and the open fire was a welcome sight on a cold evening. Our room was well supplied with toiletries, had a very comfortable bed, and a large walk in wet room shower. Perfect. The only minor down side to our lovely stay was the underfloor heating which took ages to warm the room. Lovely staff too. Well done The Grange ..... we hope to be back!
A short stay for a couple of nights and the hotel service and room stay was just superb ... A lovely hidden find which was really unexpected tucked away quietly but close to Sherborne. The car park can be busy but it's close to hand, the room was lovely and comfortable with a very peaceful sleep. A good bathroom and nice amenity touches including a good shortbread and fresh fruit ... Dinner was really well done with a good selection of wines and choice of whiskies afterwards ... Breakfast is good. Altogether a very good find - you'll be very comfortable here. I will be back. Thank you!
Yesterday my wife and I stayed at The Grange at Oborne Hotel. We were made most welcome by the staff. Our room, complete with a large balcony overlooking the pretty garden, was spacious, very well appointed and comfortable and spotlessly clean. Dinner was a delight - a sophisticated menu, very well presented and faultlessly served by the excellent young staff. (A large party of French visitors at the next door table told us how much they were enjoying their evening; praise indeed!). Breakfast was also substantial and good. We were very impressed by The Grange and enjoyed the atmosphere of an obviously happy place. We would have no hesitation in strongly recommending this well run establishment to visitors to this part of Dorset. Sir Robert Corbett.
The Grange at Oborne is a small country hotel. The décor is older, traditional in style but very pleasant. Our large room was excellent & very clean. Nice large bathroom with bath & shower. nice complimentary toiletries etc. Good selection of teas, coffee & Cadburys hot chocolate. Lovely biscuits, apple juice, fruit & bottles of water. This room had a very big balcony/patio. There were garden table & chairs for when weather is nice enough!!! I would highly recommend The Grange & definitely the room that we had. The restaurant was very pleasant & the food was excellent. Again staff were very professional & pleasant. We had a lovely, relaxing 3 night break.
Why this has been rated 3 star I do not know we could not fault it food rooms staff all excellent nice little touches like de-icer by the door lots of little extras like that we found giant bisects bottle of apple juice and fruit left for us when we left by the management second time hear and it just gets better
This hotel is one of the best we have stayed in. All of the staff were helpful and polite, the food was amazing and the room was lovely. The hotel is graded as a three star, but far outreaches this standard. We would definitely recommend this hotel and we will certainly come back.
Located down some narrow country lanes, the hotel is warm and welcoming, with pleasant bar and restaurant. The rooms are comfortable and clean with all the necessary amenities, although I would personally prefer a duvet to blankets/bedspreads. Staff members were very friendly and attentive, and the restaurant serves excellent breakfasts (both hot and cold choices), and good evening meals. There is a car park adjacent to the hotel, although this gets quite full when they have functions, and is also a short outdoor walk from reception. Wi-fi is free, although the internet/wifi connection is desperately slow. There are more positives than negatives, it's a good value hotel, and I would certainly use again.
Warm welcome, warm environment, comfortable room, good food and attentive staff. And the only hotel that has accepted newspaper vouchers in payment for my morning paper! All in all, a great weekend. After booking a two night stay only sorry I noticed the three for two night offer too late! Only downside is dull lighting but sadly this is all too often the case in hotels today.
I was booked into this hotel by work so I hadn't done any prior research. The hotel was really lovely, the rooms were spacious and well designed. The hotel had a cosy lounge area with a fire place and comfy furniture. The food was delicious; there was plenty of choice so it catered for everyone. I also really enjoyed the breakfast, having a menu to choose from was refreshing. I will definitely stay here when I'm next in the area.
Lovely welcome with champagne and canapés. Excellent service throughout, with attentive staff. Delicious food and good care taken to provide alternatives at each course when appropriate, for a dairy-free diet. It felt totally relaxed and was a real treat which was enhanced by being able to relax in the lounge afterwards with coffee.
My wife and I spent the Christmas break 2015 at The Grange; it was our first Christmas away but we immediately felt at home! The hotel was decorated most beautifully and the staff and owners could not have been more welcoming. We were so impressed with all the thought that had gone into the details, from the small tree in our room to the gift left by Santa outside our door in Christmas morning to the smell of Christmas that pervaded the hotel - just wonderful. Every meal was excellent, the filling breakfasts, fantastic lunches, dinners and buffets. Our room, indeed the entire hotel, was wonderful, clean, well equipped and well maintained. We have been fortunate enough to travel extensively and have to say that this is one of the best hotels we have discovered. Most highly recommended and we look forward to a return visit sometime.
hotel was very comfortable and very clean the staff were very friendly as were the other residents the owners were great hosts and very obliging, anything you asked for was got and with no fuss. probably the best small hotel I have stayed in the food was very good and more than enough for you to eat. I will be going back there again this year for a weekend break.
We had never spent Christmas in a hotel before and didn't know quite what to expect. The Grange was wonderful. The staff were all the perfect combination of friendliness, warmth and efficiency. The food was excellent, though after our very large Christmas lunch I couldn't do justice to the evening buffet! All the public rooms were beautifully decorated for Christmas, and the whole feel was welcoming. The hotel is in a tiny, pretty village. A summer break here would be lovely. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Grange.
This was our third Christmas away at an hotel and the Grange at Oborne surpassed all expectations. The owners were Wonderful hosts & very much hands on. The young staff were extremely efficient very friendly & nothing was too much trouble. The service was the best we have encountered anywhere. The public rooms are delightful, airy and yet cosy and ideal for spending time in with plenty of comfortable sofas & chairs. The outlook is over the lovely gardens with beautiful shrubs & trees which are all lit up at night. The meals were superb with plenty of variety ( also helped by the way they alternate where you sit between the two dining rooms at the different meals over our three night stay.). All the food is locally sourced and delicious- they obviously have very good chefs. There is a good choice of wines as well as real ale and Guinness on tap. Attention to detail is superb throughout the hotel. Our bedroom was lovely and roomy with a comfortable sofa and a large screen TV. We slept very well all three nights. The hotel is in a charming Little Dorset village with good walks and lovely lanes right outside the door. The beautiful historic town of Sherborne with its splendid Abbey is just five minutes drive away as are various splendid National Trust properties within easy reach. We had a lovely walk around Stourhead between breakfast and a splendid lunch back the hotel on Boxing Day!
We had our Christmas Party here on 19th December 2015.. and it was GREAT! The staff were lovely, the whole production of providing for 100+ people was amazing, the way they served the food, got it out whilst it was still warm and so we could all eat together and also to have such lovely well cooked food! The DJ was great and also it was nice to have space for dancing but also to be able to use the other room for talking if you wanted to be away from the Music. Everyone that stayed at the hotel, enjoyed there room. It was a delight to have our Christmas Party with you and we will be back next year! :) The hotel and staff were superb!
My Room was spacious, comfortable, nicely laid out and had a big wet floor bathroom! I had dinner which all good and breakfast was excellent! Its a lovely quite location and hotel has a real homely feel, if you want a relaxing evening I would recommend this hotel
Our second visit. The room was large and peaceful, very clean and comfortable. Our only issue was that when we were asked "are you eating with us this evening?" we assumed that they meant "in the restaurant". Apparently they also meant "room service". When we twigged we were given 15 minutes to choose from the menu (at about a quarter to 6pm) and give our room-service order or wait 3 hours (9pm) before we could do so because the restaurant was full with a Xmas party. It did make us feel as if we were being treated a bit as second-class guests.
Very enjoyable stay will recommend to friends, professional and caring staff. The room we had was very comfortable and the food was excellent. The area around the hotel was beautiful and a wonderful spot for exploring Dorset.
I have stayed and dined at The Grange many times since the present owners bought it in 2003.But this was a particular poignant 3 day break as I accompanied my 98 year old disabled father on what was probably his last visit to the area to see all his old remaining friends. The Staff in general were exceptional in making our stay comfortable and enjoyable with the two front of house receptionists Sam and Teresa particularly helpful in ensuring the disabled room and facilities were all suitable for my father's needs. We had a stream of visitors over the three days and they all enjoyed the hotel's hospitality and comfortable lounge complete with roaring log fire. All the food was of a high standard and sourced from local suppliers which is always nice to see. The young servicing staff have been well trained and are a credit to themselves and the hotel management with Agnes and Rudi deserving a particular mention. So a big thank you to Jennifer and Johnathan for making this potentially difficult visit for my father a great success. Your hotel and staff are a credit to you !
Beautiful hotel, friendly and helpful staff, superb restaurant, stunning countryside, excellent! I was staying for just one night, working in the area, but I'll more than likely bring my wife soon for a longer stay.
My wife and I and nine guests enjoyed an excellent lunch on 6th November. The staff were very attentive yet unobtrusive. The food was beautifully presented and cooked to perfection. All our guests have written to us to say how much they enjoyed the occasion. We would not hesitate to visit the Grange again and will recommend it to others..
Everything has been excellent - the room, the food and the service. Will definitely stay here again when in the area next. Surprised by having a wet room for a bathroom, pleasantly so. Also so pleased to find a good beer on draught.
A beautiful location. The hotel not only has character but has excellent facilities, sumptuous dining, splendid staff and a very welcoming atmosphere. It was good to be in a restaurant with a wide diversity of diners, which engendered a really good atmosphere.
A first visit, we stayed at the Grange for two nights. A very warm welcome, staff very pleasant. Local knowledge was amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. Excellent accommodation, very comfortable bed. The breakfast choice was amazing and freshly cooked. The evening meal was excellent with a variety of choices. Just one mile from Sherborne, it was convenient yet quiet and comfortable. Would definitely consider booking again.
Went to the Grange for a three night break with the object of doing nothing and not going very far! I had booked a deluxe room as a surprise for my husband as this provided us with more space and a nice area with a sofa and a view of the garden. We were not disappointed in the room, which had a 6ft bed (although on reflection I wish we had asked for feather pillows as the standard ones provided did not suit us - our fault for not asking as the option was provided) and a lovely completely separate bathroom. The shower was a slight let-down as it was not at all powerful but, hey, I got wet! We had visited this hotel last year when they were renovating the lounge and were very disappointed as we had been looking forward to the open fire. This time it was all beautiful with comfy chairs and sofas and a very nice dining area. We sat playing cards each evening in comfort after having eaten some lovely meals and enjoying some nice wine. The menu is not extensive and may have been a bit limited if you were staying for any length of time, but it was beautifully prepared. My steak on the last night was cooked 'rare' to perfection! This is an hotel in a wonderful position in a small hamlet really, rather than a village, with fields all around yet near enough to Sherborne and other places of interest to provide interest for those who want it. We popped into Sherborne but that was it. We had our much needed rest!
We have stayed at this hotel before and this recent stay was almost equally pleasurable. We didn't get a room upgrade on this occasion so had a standard room. The room was ok but not as good as the rooms overlooking the garden. The service was generally excellent and the food good. The only area for improvement is the very poor Internet speed. Perhaps the usual guest demographic is not concerned with Internet access but it is becoming more important to many guests.
TheGrangeatOborne, Owner at BEST WESTERN The Grange at Oborne, responded to this review
Thank you for your very kind review of the hotel; I wanted to expand on your comment about the internet speeds. Many of our guests do want quick internet access, and we are aware that the capacity that we currently have is not sufficient for the number of guests who may be using the internet at the same time. This is something we have been trying to improve for around 18 months and we have looked into many different options and taken advice from around a dozen companies. We have had fibre broadband installed however, because of the distance to our nearest cabinet, this only achieved a speed of 0.5mb and there are no plans to bring fibre closer to the village (I believe that plans are in place until 2018). Unfortunately, the articles in the press which promised superfast broadband to rural areas don't appear to be entirely accurate! We think that have finally found a solution, using a technology called load balancing. This will require several more lines to be installed at the hotel and will take some time. We hope to have this up and running in the next few months. Kind regards,
We had a short break at the hotel over a weekend and cannot praise the hotel enough. The hotel is down a country lane but there are signs to indicate the way. Although the car park is not directly in front of the hotel you can park in front when booking in and unloading luggage. There is, however, an entrance into the hotel from the car park. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful; the food was excellent and the rural setting perfect. The hotel garden was attractive. We enjoyed being able to have a pre-dinner drink in the lounge while making our choice from the menu. It is now one of our favourite hotels.
Stayed here with the husband whilst in the area for a conference but we will certainly come back for a holiday. Wonderful country house hotel beautifully presented, fabulous friendly helpful staff, great food and a beautiful room. Nothing too much trouble! 10/10 on every front!
Very comfortable and hospitable hotel. Staff helpful without being intrusive. Excellent food and rooms. There are lots of historical buildings and towns in the area without having to drive too far. I would recommend the area and definitely the Hotel.
This hotel and restaurant had been highly recommended to us by our next door neighbours. Had a two night stay, ate in the restaurant on both nights, we thought the restaurant food represented fantastic value, we have stayed in 5 star hotels which offered far inferior food at twice the price. The Grange's dinner menu offers 2 courses for £28 or 3 courses for £35. The hotel is fairly small, just 18 rooms, but what it lacks in size it more than makes up for in the quality of the warm and welcoming staff. We thought our stay was very relaxing, so have already made another booking for a 3 night Christmas stay. We would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay near Sherborne, or wanting a really good meal at a reasonable price.
We had our wedding venue at the grange and it was absolutely amazing. The service was great, the food was great. We had support from the staff throughout the lead up to the wedding, they met all of our needs.
Located just outside Sherbourne, this hotel has a great rural location in the countryside. The food was exceptional and the staff very friendly and helpful. Our room was on ground floor with direct access to the garden which was perfect for us. Thoroughly recommenced.
A beautiful and lovely hotel in a wonderful quiet part of the world. The hotel has beautiful peaceful gardens. They have two excellent rooms on the ground-floor front of house with first-class disability facilities. Also disability parking spaces at the front of house. Oborne is a mile from the historic city of Sherborne with its country houses. The quality of food at the lovely restaurant was superb. This is a family hotel and all the staff were very professional and friendly. In our view this is a Three-Star Hotel with Five-Star service. A deservedly Best Western Hotel.
