    « Great Location »

The Cartwright Hotel: Excellent Location for first timers to Union Square or even regulars who just want to head to the city for a romantic weekend. FYI: The Hotels in the area are old and the rooms are not huge so no matter where you choose to stay in this zone don't expect a large hotel room Hotel: The Cartwright has done some upgrades - Clean Rooms - Super Comfortable Beds with Flat Screen TV's. The rooms have ceiling fans and windows that actually open. The bathrooms are small - one person at a time - like the room very clean. We stayed for two nights - the first night in a King Bed Room & the second we upgraded to a King Suite. On our first day we arrived early so the room was not yet ready, they held our bags while went sightseeing and out for lunch, The room was ready at 3. The entire staff was excellent, professional and helpful. Lillian (Front Desk Check In) was exceptional - she was amazing - assisting us with upgrading our room for the second night - A King Suite for an additional amount but nothing overwhelming. Unlike the King Bed room the King Suite was Huge, Very large bathroom centered between the bedroom and a small living room that over looked the street. It also had two separate entry doors. The living room had its own flat screen TV with a pull out bed, along with a refrigerator. There are no Ice Machines but if you call down to the desk they bring a huge Ice Bucket within a few minutes, Great Service. Location: right off Sutter and Powell, trolley cars run through this route. There's a number of places to eat along with a Starbucks within a 100 yards. Uber works great in San Francisco so if you want to get to Fishermans Wharf, China Town or North Beach its a few minutes wait and only a few dollars to get to any of these locations. I used Expedia to book the room and received a decent deal for San Francisco rates. We will definitely come back to the Cartwright, the location is EXCELLENT & The Staff was AWESOME, Thank You Lillian

« Quaint and cozy hotel »

Great location. Small but very cozy hotel. Staff was excellent. Rooms were tiny but comfortable. The beds were comfortable, although an extra blanket would have been nice for the cold San Francisco eves. Also, a non dairy creamer for the coffee would be a great idea.

« Perfect location, renovated room »

1-2minutes from Union square. Parking awailable one blok away (it is possible to unload luggage in front of the hotel). Edward (whom checked us in) was very friendly and was very helpfull with suggestions :-) There is no breakfast served - but the hotel offers free cofee to go and discount at a diner located next door. We would stay here again the next time we are in San Francisco.

    « Not overly impressed. »

We booked here because we are BW Rewards members and have had great luck with staying at BW locations. This. Place. Is. Horrible. First off, they don't tell you anywhere online you have to pay for parking at a nominal fee of $31 per 24 hours for self parking or $41 per 24 hours of valet parking! I have never had to pay for parking and it's not even on site! Secondly, this is a 'premier' hotel, but what they don't tell you is it is extremely worn, old, and run down. Not worthy of 2? rating. Yes the location is clean, so is every other BW location I've been to, but it is not remotely Premier allocation worthy. Third, upon check in we requested a room upgrade as per our status with the BW Rewards program and was completely ignored by the staff at the front desk. Even after checking in the site is still showing upgraded rooms available. Extremely unimpressed. What's the point of being loyal if you can't use the perks? I would not recommend going here. The image of luxury in an old school hotel is false as I wouldn't even consider renting a place in this condition. Also, the 'plush bath robes' promised in the description on the site are non existent. Be prepared to hear every single noise from the hallway and any rooms around you. Don't forget the TV.. It is not a 40" as advertised, it's a 32". Can't wait to get out of here!

« Great location, close to everything »

Hotel had everything we needed, and location couldn't have been better. Great sports bar across the road and very close to Union Square, shops and BART. Staff were friendly and for the price, rooms were comfortable.

« Old and VERY CLEAN »

If you're cool with old historic hotels, instead of modern newer chains you'll like this hotel! It's in the Nob Hill area of the city and close to a lot of things that are walking distance in the city. The entire hotel is very, very clean and had an old, vintage charm to it, as the building is very old. We loved that and made it ok that the rooms were a bit small. The unscreened window to the fire escape let you listen to the sounds of the city! The staff was exceptionally nice and went out of their way to accommodate. You should know that there isn't an AC, but the ceiling fan and window are just fine, and the bathroom is small and doesn't have a ventilation fan, so if you require a lot of space to groom, bring a mirror to use at the desk inside the bedroom, and you might want to bring along som Poo-purri?? Also the reservationist for Best Western said that the rooms were equipped with a mini fridge and microwave, but The Cartwright didn't. We made it work though. All in all it was a great, charming place to stay.

« Small but cosy hotel »

We stayed here for 2 nights and it was the perfect location if you want to be in the heart of the city. Hotel was quite old but charming and really comfortable. Our room was small but had everything we needed including a silent ceiling fan which was definitely needed. No breakfast here but free hot drinks every morning until 11am. Friendly staff and great location sums this hotel up.

« Great location, clean and small room »

Stayed for the night as i started a bike trip to LA. The rooms were very nice and clean. Like most accommodations in an Fran, the room was small but very functional. Will definitely stay here again when i'm in the area.

    « Short fun vacation »

The Cartwright is old but a bit elegant. Very clean and the staff friendly and helpful. Edward at the front desk was very nice and a pleasure to see every day. The location close to Union Square great for sight seeing and restaurants. We were upgraded to a suite which was large and comfortable, corner with city views. Roxie's on the corner nice for breakfast and reasonable. I would return to this hotel on another visit.

« Best Western Union Square »

Great Stay. Loved the vanity in the closet which provided extra lighted mirror for getting ready. Coffee pot needs to be updated. the tray melted when it got too hot. Loved the located in Union Square. Staff is extremely friendly and helpful. Would love it if the hotel offered room service or complimentary breakfast in the morning.

« Quaint but needs a new mattress »

This hotel is charming, in a fabulous location, quiet, pet friendly and affordable. The rooms was basic, bathroom was very small, and the bed dipped terribly in the middle. The pillows were fluffy-so big that it was uncomfortable-with no extra bedding in the closet. Wish breakfast was offered.

« Close to Union Square »

This was a basic hotel very small room , was clean , comfortable , quiet , lift was slow on some occasions , bathroom very tiny , staff very friendly and helpful , no microwave, fridge , safe just basic , coffee only available in the mornings

« great location near union square »

stayed there for 7 days. very central to union square and China town. you can walk to fisherman's Wharf in 20 min or get the tram. lots of bars and restaurants reasonably priced. it is a comfortable hotel.

    « fab location »

my partner and I booked this hotel for 1 night for its location and price we paid. we were beginning our road trip and flew in to san fran to see Alcatraz next morning. close to china town . around a 20min walk to pier 39. parking no problem a little away from hotel but staff explain this on arrival. the rooms were a little old but very clean and very spacious compared to last stay in a san fran hotel. great bars and diners around this hotel aswell. . will return and recommend to friends and family when visiting san fran.

    « Unquestionable Location »

Hotel has unquestionably best location in San Francisco. We stayed at this hotel 7 nights. Although it is an older building, our room was lovely and very comfortable.A mirror in our room was the only thing missing. We loved our stayed at the Cartwright Hotel. In my next visit to San Francisco, I will be sure to stay at this hotel again!

« Good location, rooms need major updating »

The hotel is in a great location in Union Square. The lobby is charming and the front desk folks were friendly. However, this hotel is in need of some serious renovation. Everything in the room was clearly very old, and not in a charming/classy way like the lobby. There weren't any "extras" which is fine, but I suppose I have come to expect some. No water (in room or in the lobby), no coffee maker, no fridge, the most basic cable I've seen in decades (not that you want to spend your time in SF watching TV!), and no air conditioning. The AC was my biggest issue because it got up to 78 degrees and I expect to be comfortable in a hotel. There is a ceiling fan but that wasn't much help. You can also open the windows but because of the popular area, it was incredibly loud and impossible to sleep with the windows open. I realise that the hotel is under renovations, but it was unclear to me that I was booking one of the non-renovated rooms (and AC isn't a new thing, I'm surprised they're just now undergoing renovations). Was there a way to know that the room I was booking wasn't updated and maybe I missed it? Overall this hotel was very average, and we still had a good time. It was also slightly cheaper than other hotels in the area, so that makes up for some of what was lacking! We barely spent any time in the room since we were out exploring and only there for three nights. If I were staying longer than three nights though, I don't think I would stay here again.

    « Cute older hotel »

This is a nice place to stay. The people are very friendly, the rooms are clean and met my needs for a short business trip; nothing fancy, but just what I needed. I didn't have a pet with me, but I loved that they welcome pets.

    « Great locatin 10/10 »

The service was just fantastic We stayed at this Hotel for 11 days The locatin was just perfect We had a problem with the fan in our room and the Hotel maintain was just amazing The room is a bit small but it's works ok for the locatin and price 10/10

    « October 14-17, 2016 »

We love this hotel and have been guests on every trip to San Francisco since 1985. Great location and great staff. However, we were disappointed on this trip by the "worn" look of our suite. Looking forward to an upgrade we heard about from the staff.

« Nice touches but room for improvement »

Hotel room had some nice touches - jars of cotton wool, tissues, hairdryer, coffee maker. However lacks attention to detail in other areas - no blind on bathroom window so light comes through the glass bathroom door; no safe in room (use at reception, free); no fridge in room. Could do with hooks in dead spaces by vanity unit, and bigger bedside cabinets. Very noisy hotel, no consideration from other visitors (doors banging, shouting, etc) nor staff/cleaners - cleaners come knocking before 9am so put sign out if you don't want disturbing. Even on our last day, checking out at 12, still had early knock from cleaner. Oh and no bar (we'll certainly not in use) nor any dining area nor entertainment - in fact no entertainment nearby.

    « Small, conveniently located »

The location of the hotel is convenient to the financial district and many restaurants. I even walked to AT&T Park. The staff was helpful and for the most part friendly. The suites have refrigerators which I need while I travel. Valet parking is available but the lead time for your car is about 30-45 minutes. The room price and the parking price is very good compared to a similar hotel a few blocks down Sutter. Overall, the facility is clean - modest - pleasant.

« Diamond in the rough »

The bed was surprisingly very comfortable and the room was clean. Most of the staff was very nice and accommodating. The lobby areas are great (although the bar was not operating which was a disappointment). The outside area is loud and since there is no A/C we had to open the windows -- not ideal. Adjoining room door needs to be sound-proofed. The staff should make sure the street in front of the hotel has the spot for loading/unloading open. A service truck was parked in front. Had to bring all our (large) luggage up the hill to load our car. That was a terrible last impression!

    « Tiny, European feel »

Great historic, European feel hotel. Kind staff. Very small (we did 2 twin beds) but efficient, clean rooms with A/C. Close walk uphill to Top of the Mark, trolley stop, Chinatown etc. Would stay again for the price. Felt safe. Parking was only $35.

« Well Situated near Union Square !! »

Although an older property we found the facilities very comfortable. The bathroom a little cramped but included a bath with a very good shower over the bath. The bed gave us a very good sleep after our long flight from the UK. The management and in particular the conciege were very helpful - gave us details for the "Hop on, Hop off bus tour and arranged our shuttle to the Airport and also provided discount vouchers for local diners in the area. We would definitely stay here again.

    « Not quite 3 star »

We were to stay at the Cartwright for 6 days but found the photos and reality of the hotel were not quite as shown and left after two nights . Our travel agent getting us a room at the Hilton Union Square at a cheaper rate . The bed was comfortable in the small room but the bathroom had no exhaust fan or any room to comfortably dry yourself without opening the door to the bed room . There was not a secure lock on the door nor a safe to deposit passports etc. and we thought the staff did their work but without any real motivation . The Hotel is renovating the rooms but in our room quality control is an issue . toilet pan not fitted square to the wall , tile where shower rose comes through wall had a hole not covered by a flange . The passageway was a bit dark and dingy , not at all inviting or warm or with class It did not compare as a three star hotel to the Whitcomb Hotel where we stayed one night on a return to San Francesco . The Whitcomb had a bit of class .

« Like being in a dorm room »

My husband and I chose the Cartright because of its location. We found the staff to be very helpful and professional but for the price, the accommodations were not great. The room was tiny - we reserved a queen room and we're given a full bed. The vanity was in the closet...yes, really. We literally had to take turns getting into our suitcases as there was not enough room to be in both at once. When waiting for the elevator, another guest commented that he thought the seven dwarves must stay here as there's not enough room for anyone else. The bed was comfortable, but our feet were well off the bottom of it. So, if you don't mind being in a teeny, tiny place for the price of a full-size room, the staff, location, and quality of the bed are good, even great. But if size and space matters to you, this is not your hotel.

« Great service and location »

The hotel itself is a little old and run down. There was two particular staff members that went over and above to help us out! It was very much appreciated as the man at the desk the night before was extremely rude when our room key wouldn't work. Location is fantastic as it is close to everything and public transport.

    « Cartwright Hotel »

The hotel Cartwright hotel in San Francisco its an average hotel. There is need to improve on the look and of the Hotel. Need to modernize it and the potters and an elegant reception area. There is need to have a variety of teas in the rooms not only black coffee. It will really be of service if the hotel can have some breakfast.

« Road trip through NoCal »

Started a 10 day drip thru NoCal by staying 2 nights at the Cartwright. Had stayed here in the summer of '07. We love this hotel. Great character and wonderful staff. For both stays we have had a room at the front of the hotel. Next time we are in SF we will be at the Cartwright but I'll try to get a room toward the back of the building to minimize the street noise.

    « Ok at Cartwright »

Had a 5 day stay at the Cartwright for our honeymoon, although the rooms are very small, they were lovely, clean and well decorated. Hotel location was fabulous, located just by union square. Lovely American diner (Louis diner) on the corner that I would highly reccomend. Only downside to the hotel was the day time reception staff - appeared rude at times, and not the most helpful.. However the evening reception guy could not have been more helpful.

    « Character Hotel »

Character old-style hotel just off Union Square. No meals in-house but plenty of options nearby. Fabulous concierge. Smallish bathroom but a walk-in wardrobe/dressing room is a nice touch. The hotel is totally pet-friendly.

« Nice clean room, quite, nice hotel and 12pm check out is great. »

Enjoyed my one night stay, pleasent quite hotel near busy Union Square. Good breakfast diner next store. Clean room but it was smallish, just room for a bed desk and nice size closet area. Friendly staff. No gym, but can use nearby gym for $15' Would stay again.

« Great hotel, great staff, perfect location »

I stayed here whilst in the city for the San Francisco Marathon July 31st. The hotel has a great character in it's décor. The rooms are fine, very clean and the staff are very helpful on the reception. Location is perfect for all things in San Francisco. I'll be stayig here again for all my future visits to my favourite city.

« All right at the Cartwright »

Convenient location and very courteous registration staff with lobby that is very accommodating and comfortable. Room was petite, but very adequate for one person. Excellent value for San Francisco. Will return.

« Great location and staff »

Highly recommended, very convenient to everything and so, so helpful front desk! Rate much better than others in this same area. I could walk everywhere I wanted or needed to go. You won't be disappointed, beds are small but I knew that when I booked it.

« Old styles hotel comfortable »

We found it a comfortable clean and well kept hotel. Staff friendly and helpful Colour TV No A/C Firm beds clean linen Lifts available 7 eleven ,Starbucks across the road Nearest corner is the famous Powell street They can organise tours, and other assorted activities

    « Nice little hotel »

Really nice little hotel near union square. It's near public transport so a great location. The rooms are a little small and out dated but that what makes it. The reception staff were really nice and friendly except the older gentleman on nights who didn't even say bye after checking out.

« Excellent location for shopping, touring and dining »

Clean, updated boutique style hotel. Easily accessible from a main street. Not very noisy considering location to busy area. Very nice accommodating front desk staff, concierge and housekeeping team. Well priced for San Fran, small rooms but goal was to sightsee and stay outside.

« Decent value, expect some tradeoffs »

Decent value, small hotel room size but on par for historic hotels in SanFrancisco. Good coffee and tea selection in the morning. Things I wasn't pleased about - management permitted guests to smoke right outside the door, when laws state a minimum distance of 15 feet. Walked through a gauntlet of smokers each evening, bummer. Other surprise was the street noise - although I was on the 5th floor (really 4 floors up) two persons sounded as if they were talking right outside my window. Noise from trolley was 'authentic SFO experience' but not really muted by the solution, which was provided earplugs. good thing I was exhausted from work and walking around the great city. I'd stay here again in a pinch if traveling solo for business as the location was good but it's hard to recommend when I've stayed in some wonderful hotels in the same city for the same cost. Staff was excellent on check in and departure and overall very friendly.

    « Perfect location, modern & clean »

I stayed here for 6 nights and I'm glad I did. The location is perfect, so close to Union Square, shops, coffee shops etc. The room itself was one that had been refurbished so everything was quite new, modern and clean. There was some noise from the street at night even though I was on one of the higher floors, but not too bad. One negative was that the room doors are very old and heavy, and every morning and night I would hear other doors close very loudly. I tried to close mine quietly but it just doesn't happen. Toiletries in the bathroom were ok, but felt that the cleaners were a bit stingy with replacing bottles which were nearly used up. Overall a great place, and I'd stay there again.

    « A great hotel .. A San Fran little gem! »

We have just left after a 4 night stay at The Cartwright. Really couldn't fault this hotel for a city break. Great location by Union Square , right on the cable car route, easy to get about from here and all the shopping you could want on the doorstep. The hotel staff were all super helpful and welcoming. Edward was able to help us with our attraction tickets too. We found the hotel to be charming, it's only small and boutique style but with huge amounts of character and a nice feel to it. The log fire was burning in the mornings when it was chilly and a bit foggy outside. It all added to the atmosphere of the hotel. We enjoyed free coffee each morning in the lounge area before heading out for the day. Our room was spotlessly clean and tidy, cosy , nice white towels, iron and hairdryer came in handy and it was a bonus to have coffee in the room. Don't expect a huge room as this is an old building and is in keeping with the old style buildings which to us was much nicer than a big chain hotel that you can stay in anywhere in the world. This felt like San Francisco. Couldnt fault this hotel it was perfect for what we wanted from our city break. Thank you

    « Just fantastic! Simplemente fantástico ! »

From the time we arrived everyone was very helpful , professional and nice they accommodate us as soon we got to the hotel, the rooms nice an clean, the ambiance elegant traditional the location is perfect in the center of the city near union square, restaurants, stores and transportation, we love it !!!

« Great place to stay »

Clean room. Friendly staff full of local knowledge. Although we had a small room it was sufficient. the only problem we incurred was a loud neighbour the last day we stayed. Old style and great. Very easy to get around the city. close to the centre of town.

    « Great bed, no A/C »

The staff was great, and this hotel is definitely a nice place to stay. I was there for a business trip, but wasn't prepared for the lack of air conditioning - I should know better, but given it's August in SF I really wasn't thinking about it. Room was clean, and bed was very comfortable. Overall a great value.

« San Francisco was aweome »

I enjoyed staying in the hotel but would like to know what the charge of $NZ42.66 taken from my Visa account was for?? I enjoyed the comfortable lounge and appreciated the 'help yourself' to each days newspapers and tea and coffee. Sandra

    « Staff enhanced stay »

The Cartwright is an older hotel located just of Powell. Walking distance to financial district and high end shopping. Room was on the dingy side but clean. Bed was comfortable. Front end staff were very friendly and seemed interested in where I had come from and was going.

    « Convenient but cramped »

Located in a prime location just blocks from Union Square, this hotel has every opportunity to become a classic and desirable stay location. Unfortunately, during the renovation process, they forgot to consider the overall comfort of their clientele. Rooms were extremely small, with the bathroom so tight a tall person would need to be a contortionist to fit. The staff was very attentive, and knowledgeable.

    « Great escape »

Great location, fab suite, very clean. front desk very helpful and friendly. Tour bus with discount if booked through hotel. Clean and comfortable. Would recommend this hotel. Shame they don't' offer breakfast facility's.

« Amazing location, incredibly helpful staff »

From the moment we first arrived Nancy on the front desk went out of her way to be incredibly helpful and accommodating, we really can't thank her enough. From ensuring we were happy with our room selection, hers and the front desk and concierge staff were all amazing and I felt compelled to review the hotel. It has been recently taken over and unfortunately does not serve breakfast, but due to one of the best locations, right near Union Square and ChinaTown, there were dozens of options on the doorstep. The hotel itself was clean and nice, it could do with a little touching up here and there but for a city centre hotel we were so impressed. Restaurant recommendations and a transfer back to the airport all sorted out in our best interests, great service. Recommended!

    « Great hotel! »

Great hotel near Union Square. We booked a terrible hotel nearby so we enter the cartwright hotel to check for prices and availability. Nancy in the reception was so nice and willing to help us in everything we asked for. Thanks.

« Very convenient and quaint »

We had a nice three day stay here. Perfect location to get out and about. Not bad having a wine store next door and great restaurants within blocks. The hotel is clean and well maintained. It is an old property given new life. Of course it isn't cheap, but then nothing is in this neighborhood. The beds were comfortable. The hot water took a bit of time to arrive (fifth floor room). Great coffee in the morning in the lobby. No restaurant, but nice diners nearby for breakfast. Not luxury, but comfortable.

« Great Location, Helpful Staff »

The Cartwright is excellent for location, friendly helpful staff, very clean, they give you money off vouchers for a diner near by and have complimentary tea & coffee in the mornings. The only thing that lets it down is the small rooms. But on the whole we had a very pleasurable stay here.

« Good Price Good Room »

Cartwright Hotel give you very comfortable room in the city center. The location is near to union square at San Francisco. The staff just very nice, warm and friendly. They will help you with everything you need. The hotel is really suite for business and leisure.

« biz in san fran »

The Carwright is lovely older hotel with lots of history. It's located in Union Square which is close to food, drinks and shopping. It's easy to catch any kinds of transportation. The staff was wonderful and the room was newly remodeled and very nice. It only has coffee and tea for breakfast which was a bit of a bummer but there is plenty places close enough to grab something.

    « Great Find! »

Great hotel in convenient location. Recently renovated rooms and Ideally situated near Union Square, Nob Hill, and the Powell Street Station. I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone who wants to stay in the heart of San Francisco.

« location, staff, price equals great »

first time visit to S.F. and we decided to use city transit (no rental car for this trip). we booked this hotel in advance and got a great deal. then, we found it was absolutely a GREAT deal. located a block from cable car stop and easy access to the bus routes. friendly staff welcomed us and helped us with questions during our stay. if you're looking for an almost European type hotel, this is one. they are retrofitting the rooms throughout, so we found a new, comfortable bed; work desk (didn't need it) and clean bathroom that were well fit in a smaller than usual space. if you are going to a hotel for the view, for built-in attractions or to spend all your time in the hotel, then you probably won't be comfortable here. this was built years ago and has been maintained well for travelers looking a good night's rest. we would recommend this to anyone asking and would book again when we return.

« Much nicer than expected »

The weather was cool and we left our window open the entire time. This was where we stayed for our 10th anniversary and we weren't disappointed. It's an old hotel (small rooms), but our room was remodeled and modern. They are called boutique hotels for a reason, and you must stay in one when you go to San Fran. There was a bit of street noise, but honestly, the noise was of the cable cars going by chiming their bell. That's pretty awesome. There is a Walgreen's and 7/11 across the street and a lot of restaurants too. City bus 30 is a block away and you can take it and any other city bus for a half day for $2.25 to fisherman's wharf. The staff was fantastic and very professional. There is also a fireplace in the back, that was nice when we met a friend from the city. It was a cold night so it was nice sitting next to a fire to talk to her.

« Great Hotel, Great Location!! »

3 min walk to union square, convenient for the cable car and all public transport. The room was perfect, we stayed in a newly refurbished one. Doesn't do breakfast but the helpful staff gave us 3 20% off coupons to eat at Loris Diner next door. Overall very good!

    « Clean »

I was extremely happy with our stay at the Cartwright. This was our first trip to San Francisco so we weren't sure what to expect. Newly renovated with extremely friendly staff. The rooms were small but definitely worth the price as we weren't there to hang out in our room. Most importantly, CLEAN!

« Clean, comfortable, convenient, and friendly »

Couldn't have been more pleased with choosing the Cartwright for our trip to SF. It was close to everything we needed. Staff was excellent & went out of their way to meet our needs. There are plenty of MUNI stops within walking distance including 1 right outside. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone especially if you're the to see the city and don't mind a small & very clean room stay here.

« I'd give it an Excellent but... »

We stayed here two nights and talk about central. You can pretty much walk everywhere, the cable car (trolly) just on the corner, China town a block over, the Financial district (great restaurants) a couple blocks, Fishermans Wharf a 20 minute walk. Excellent location. The hotel is old, and a little tired, certainly eclectic, but what a sweet boutique hotel. The room we had was small, antiquated but so cute. we loved it. It was all we needed and seriously, there is so much to do we really didn't do much but sleep and change clothes. The staff were welcoming and very helpful. I mentioned that I'd give it an "Excellent" but the hotel is currently renovating and while it was noisy at time, it was not unreasonable and they were very aware of quite time. I read a few negative comments about the renos from others but seriously, they are doing what they have to do to make this an even better place to stay so to those people I say "tolerance and understanding." I would DEFINITELY go back and stay there.

« Excellent staff and very comfortable bed »

An older style hotel with plenty of charm and a very comfortable bed. The staff were outstanding. A number of staff went out of their way to assist with late night transport arrangements to get me to the hotel when no taxis were available and the next day they confirmed an interstate tour booking for me while I was out on another long day tour and unable to do the confirmation myself. Thoroughly enjoyed my stay.

« Great location and with lots of character. »

I chose this hotel primarily for its location - central to San Francisco's hub so easy to visit all the things we wanted to. The hotel is old and certainly has character, much like the chap who checked us in! He could have done with being a tad more welcoming. Our room was overlooking a wall which was a trifle disappointing but it was big enough and clean and the bed was comfy. We hadn't come to look out of the window after all. Plenty of hot water, soft towels and ample toiletries were great. No microwave nor fridge and only two sachets of coffee and powdered milk provided per day, but there is a 7-11 right opposite the hotel that does great take out coffee so it really wasn't a problem. Lori's diner is two doors away and we got discount vouchers to use there so that's where we had breakfast. I'm glad we chose this hotel as it really was in a great location and it was perfect for our four day stay. A charming man did offer to help us book trips etc (sorry, can't remember his name). Recommended

« Great gem in a prime location »

Older hotel so the rooms are small. However, they are nicely updated and very clean. The hotel staff are very helpful and friendly. Service is good. There are no microwaves or refrigerators. An easy walk to the financial district. Lots of good shopping and restaurants nearby

« Cute boutique hotel in prime location »

I've been to SF before, but my husband had not. We were in town for our anniversary. I wanted to find a hotel that was central to all of the places I knew he'd want to visit in the city, so Union Square made the most sense. This hotel is a couple of blocks from Chinatown (one of my favorite areas of the city), one block north of Union Square, and about 4-5 blocks from the Powell Street BART station, which makes it easy to take the BART to/from the airport. This hotel is very cute and clean. The pillows were very comfortable as well. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful to us - very welcoming and accommodating. The room was on the smaller side, but having stayed in larger cities before (SF, LA, NYC, Paris, etc.), it's what I expected. We always had good water pressure and hot water. The hotel is in the process of being renovated, and I think we were in the "older" section as our room seem a bit on the "tired" side. Even so, it was still fine for us and our needs - we aren't too picky as long as the space is clean (though since it was our anniversary, it would have been a fun perk to be upgraded :) though of course that's not necessary and not anything we expected). The only cons were: the mattress was VERY uncomfortable, and there was no fridge/microwave in the room. That was a bummer, because when we'd eat out, we had a ton of leftovers (and at SF prices, we really didn't want to waste anything). We'd really have had liked the option to bring food back to snack on later. I would recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again. We enjoyed our stay at this cute hotel.

« Cool spot, great location »

We recently stayed here. The Cartwright Hotel (or as the staff call it, Old Betsy), is in a great location. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel seemed to have a lot of history. Classic downtown San Fran hotel, close to the action for a reasonable price. Highly recommended!

    « Great Boutique Hotel! »

We recently spent 4 nights at this historic hotel and thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The entire staff was very professional and courteous. We stayed in a suite that was very spacious and clean. They are currently remodeling the rooms from the top floor down. The suite we stayed in had not been remodeled but was in very good condition. We would definitely love to stay here again!

« Great location and staff, rooms being updated. »

Room: small, outdated. no fridge or micro. great bed. Even though small and outdated, the room was charming. Bathroom: small, good water pressure in shower. Never turned on the TV, just looked out the window for entertainment! No breakfast, just tea and coffee. Currently being remodeled. Downstairs common areas beautiful. We would definitely stay again.

« The Cartwright has the perfect european feel »

Not too fancy, just right. Plus, you can get everywhere from their door. Save your money for restaurants...don't blow it on over-priced hotels. The staff are really accomodating, and there are really great places to walk to nearby.

    « Brilliant customer service »

The hotel is very well located, a few minutes walk from union square (5 mins if that). The rooms were adequately sized although the bathroom we had was a little small. The decor in the rooms is a bit tired however the hotel is currently in the process of being refurbished (there was no noise or disturbance from this). We were shown the standard of the new rooms and they looked amazing. They are not ready for rent yet...possibly early 2017. So ask about them if you are considering booking for next year! I would suggest that you take earplugs as depending on which side of the hotel you are on you may get some street noise at night. There was absolutely no noise from inside the hotel though. Our room was right opposite the lift as well but no problems with that at all. The beds were very comfy and housekeeping was very good too. As I said in the title, the customer service was brilliant. Every member of staff was polite, sincere and attentive. That scores highly in my book. We felt really well looked after and nothing was too much trouble. There is a mini business centre there, handy for printing boarding passes (this is free to use). Tea and coffee is set up from 7am until 10 am each morning. There is a coffee machine in the room as well. The lounge area is comfortable and there is a rather large fire which I never thought I would need to be sat next to (how wrong I was after coming in from the cold, windy evenings!) I would definitely return to this hotel. It's about a 25 minute taxi ride from the airport and it cost about $60 one way. We also took advantage of booking a bus tour through the hotel and we were given $10 off per person for the 1 day tour. All in all, the Cartwright Hotel helped make our 3 night stay in SF a very enjoyable one!

    « 3 nights city break - good value & great location »

We stayed here on the final stretch of a 2 week tour in the states. The hotel staff were very welcoming and friendly on our Check in and we were given access to our room at this time despite it being 8am. This was very much appreciated as we were tired after an overnight flight from Hawaii. The roaring fire and complimentary tea & coffee was great and much needed. The rooms were very small but that's to be expected in the city. A huge closet to keep luggage and clothes in though. Bed was comfy and shower was decent enough. Room was basic with a tv and coffee maker & hairdryer. But we didn't spend much time here at all. The location is excellent, 5 mins to hop on off bus stop, few mins from union square, 10 mins to Chinatown. Good value and great location

    « the birthday »

the hotel was centrally located for all planned activity. although the choices for breakfast restaurants was limited to one. the entertainment choices were many, although the streets were very crowded, and noisy, the hotel maintained a level of peace and quit, was able to afternoon nap!

    « Good location...rooms dated »

First off San Francisco is an e pensive city and hotels are not cheap. The hotel is in a good location only few hundred meters from Union Square and all it shops. There is a cable car stop right at the corner that will take you all the way to Fishermans Warf. Diner next door but it is over priced for the quality of food. The hotel itself is an old building and undergoing refurbishments. The lobby is nice and clean and there is a lift service to the rooms. The big downfall are the rooms. Our room was small and outdated. The bathroom was right inside the door and was very small. Shower was hot but bath uncomfortable to sit in. Our room had a heater that used come on at night and would make some loud noises and really you didn't need the heat on in the middle of summer. There is no air con in the rooms so it can be hot in the summer. Our room was quiet dusty and the end of the bed was all frayed. The bed was comfortable and room service came daily. It was just like the room needed a real deep clean. One really annoying thing is there is no safe in the room you have to put it in a box at reception and everything you need money or passports you needed to go down and you have everything out in the open in the reception. Overall the location is great but I'd hold off on booking again until all the refurbishments are finished before I'd try it again.
