    « Wonderful Staff »

Many thanks to Glenn G. and the Valet staff for making me feel welcome and safe. Nice room. Convenient to downtown. I was very stressed and the staff did everything to make me comfortable. Room was clean and well appointed.

« Quite good location wifi doesn't work for every phone »

Only 15 minutes drive from SFO airport, and 10 from pier 39, quite near the city centre. Beds were good quality, the bathroom had separate shower and toilet from the sink, quite useful if you're not traveling alone. Downside is wifi was absolutely rubbish for some devices, and even after a lot of messing around browsers we couldn't manage to make it work (my friend who is wifi dependent was very upset.. :) ).

« Reasonable Price and Exceptionally Great Service »

The front desk is a hotels lifeline and all the front desk staff were exceptional. They, especially Glenn, Justine and Timmon and Christine, were there to accommodate the customer. I missed the cookies and waffles but San Frans's food at Pier 39 makes up for it. Take Uber/Lyft to Union Square and take buses. Walking is not recommended. To cap off the stay the manager, Christina came out interested that I had a great stay.

    « Overnight visit »

Clean hotel but parking at hotel is extra. I loved the old Hollywood themed room. Very close to UCSF benioff children's hospital, ATT park and the embarcadero. A little pricey in general but for San Francisco it was expected.

    « 48 Hour Stopover »

With just a brief 48 hour stopover from Sydney en route to New York this modern well run hotel was a blessing. Accommodated my very early check-in without a problem or additional cost and the wifi is amazingly fast. Centrally located and walking distance to the BART station, this is a great base for visitors and o call home. All staff were friendly, helpful and courteous. Thank you for a great 2 days.

« Good hotel and good sevice »

Very good hotel. Rooms are clean and the people at the desk are friendly and helpful (especially Lawrence that help us a lot to organize the city trip the first day). External heated pool that is good in every season. The only bad point is the extra bed (sofabed) that is not confortable (it was a bit ruined and some springs were missing underneath). Queens bed, on the contrary, are very comfortable. Cleaning staff as well is very kind and helpful. Another good point is the PC with internet spot for free and possibility to print documents available at the reception. The overall impression is very positive.

    « Very nice hotel »

It was very nice and clean hotel! Very near from Union square and everything. We stay 6 people in a double room with 3 double beds and it is very nice this option if you want to stay many friends together!

    « Centrally Located - Modern - Highly Recommended »

The rooms were very clean. Centrally located to everything in emerging soma. Good breakfast. The room was funky and allowed for good instagram opportunities. Check in was easy and the staff very accomodating.

    « Expensive and noisy »

Pricey hotel for as little as you get. A small room with nothing special, funky dated decor, a crummy old ceiling fan for temp control, an old bathroom, hard beds and lots of street noise! Apparently this hotel is being renovated, but it still looks bad, not impressive. The elevator is SLOW and rickety. We often wondered if we were going to get stuck in it! The staff at the front desk were very helpful and nice. BUT something like a free breakfast or appetizers, SOMETHING to make this place worth it!

« Bad neighborhood, small rooms »

We had a very small room, but it was ok for 2 nights. But the hotel is situated in a bad neigborhood. My wife and daughter were already harrassed on the streets at 8 in the evening returning from union square and the second night they broke in into our car which was parked in the closed and -so they say- monitored valet parking from the hotel. This was 2 weeks ago and we haven't heard a word from the hotel since. Stay away I would say.

    « Funky »

Great deal at this place, good for a few nights stopover, very seventies quirky decor in large rooms with floor to ceiling Windows. Area a couple of blocks away is a bit down st heel, but no problems other wise

    « Two nights stay »

2 nights stay at this hotel. We found the hotel to be clean, staff helpful. However we were disappointed with the facility offered for the price. No breakfast, you had the option of buying your breakfast in the breakfast room which looked like a cafe. The menu not very attractive for the cost. The room was clean and comfortable but had no ventilation.

    « Highly Recommended »

Our stay was very pleasant, it feels like we never left home. The check in and out was very smooth. No hassles at all. Staff were alert, courteous, polite, caring and sensitive to our needs. Manager was very accommodating and very hands on. Thank you very much. Until next time.

« Great staff and great hotel »

Great staff and great hotel. Location is situated close to public transportation. SOMA area got a lot of very good restaurants and places to go. Hotel staff are great. The heated pool is great, very rare to see a hotel in San Francisco with a heated pool.

« Simple hotel, great location! »

We recently visited hotel and we're surprised by how easy it was to get too and the great central location. The room is big enough, was clean and has a funny retro look. We had no problem with outside noise. No a/c but the fan on the ceiling worked just as well. There are a lot of homeless people around the hotel, but then again... they are everywhere in San Francisco. Hotel had a small, but good, rooftop pool. Did not try the brealfast, but had a great breakfast at Cafe Moda across the street.

« Hotel fine just not family friendly location »

The hotel itself was fine with helpful friendly staff and room was fine for a family of 5 but location not ideal I did ask the staff if it was safe to walk around with the family at night and was given ok but after walking back from a restaurant near Union Square after dark we walked through the tenderloin which is not recommended I saw multilple drug deals going down and some not so great people to meet after dark be aware Would not recommend for families

    « Enjoyed my dtay »

The room was very clean and comfortable, the staff was very pleasant and helpful. There is security watching the property. I liked that the rooms all opened to a courtyard that was internal to the building

    « Nicely Renovated! »

We enjoyed our stay here. We love the decor and artsy feel of the hotel. The hotel is clean and our stay is very comfortable. I was just a little surprised to find out that there's no aircondition in the room but it's really not an issue since it's fairly cold when we stayed in October. It even rained. It's walking distance to union square. Most importantly, great customer service!

« Not a nice stay in SF »

We stay at Best Westerns all over the US and this experience was one of our worst. They charge $35 for parking ($15 for motorcycles - when we still have to park it ourselves). Breakfast isn't included and for almost $250 a night (NOT including parking!) you would think it would be. The staff was nice and helpful, but the room needed some work and they couldn't address it that night.

    « Not worth it!!! »

The hotel was dirty, outdated, the staff was unprofessional and definitely doesn't worth the amount of money per night. The photos are misleading and do not show the worst parts of the hotel. Don't recommend it!!

« Acceptable in such an expensive town »

Rooms are ok, but you hear the surrounding noise from neighboring rooms pretty strongly Fitness surprisingly well equipped Skip the breakfast (to be paid extra) and go to a dinner Parking was 35$ a night Staff at the reception very friendly Market street just around the corner is busy by day, but absolutely not a nice area to walk around by night

« Ok place, not the best neighborhood »

Can't really say anything really bad about the place. It's clean, everyone is very polite and friendly. I can only give 3 stars though because it's really not 4-5 level. Cons were the rooms do not have air conditioning. We were here during a heat wave. Didn't get much sleep and had to leave our door open. The neighborhood is a little iffy. Never felt unsafe, just currently a lot of homeless and very dirty. The courtyard does echo quite a bit. Bring a white noise maker to sleep if you can!

    « one night »

Very easy to check in. A little hard to find. They up graded my room my kids we very happy to have their own space a after a long drive. Very nice space. Breakfast was a little strange in the moring but all in all very nice.

« Great staff, clean room »

The staff was super friendly and helpful. The valet parking was a big plus--easy to get in and out off, not something all SF hotels can boast. The valet staff was super professional and friendly, especially Malique (Malik?), Antwon and I didn't catch the girl's name. The team seems to work together well and enjoy their jobs. We really appreciated them. Diana at the front desk was helpful with finding places to eat, etc., and also very pleasant. Really, every staff member we spoke to was super friendly, helpful and greeted us with a smile. The heated pool is like hot tub temp. It was awesome. Nice that it's outside (on the roof of one of the levels). The restaurant was being renovated, but was still functional and very convenient for breakfast. They do offer a continental "grab-bag" and free coffee thing, but we just went to the restaurant. We were within walking distance of everywhere we went except for the piers and Fisherman's Warf (plenty of restaurants and our concert venue). Definitely not the seediest parts of town to have to walk through (the Tenderloin is much worse). Nice that check-out isn't until noon. The shower was nice and hot and the nozzle was way taller than most hotels/motels (I'm 5'3" and sometimes they're too low for me!). Would definitely stay here again!

« Nice hotel very near Union Square »

Mid range very clean hotel located by Market Street. 5 mins walk from Union Square 30 min bus ride to Fishermans Wharf for me location fine. Lots of homeless people but felt safe even as single female traveller. They are renovating at moment for restaurant to be ready fall 2016 informed at desk work would be carried out 10am-5pm daily was ok as out all day. Gym small but good had asked for hotel with gym when booked package holiday. Nice size room queen sized bed. Staff very friendly and helpful. I liked it here v quiet at night.

    « Small rooms »

We stayed at this hotel for two nights during our self drive holiday of California, the room was clean but very small with two double beds, didn't sleep well at all. Roof top pool is heated and great, however, weather was cool so unable to use it. Hotel location not great due to the amount of homeless people around, walking into the city felt quite unsafe, staff on Reception were very informative and gave us a map of the city and how to access the public transportation, we visited Alcatraz and the Fisherman's wharf which was great.

    « Nice place »

Pleasantly surprised with the property despite its location (not far from Market Street). The pool, guest room and lobby decor were great, bright, lively. It's a smaller property but fortunately has parking and near public transportation and about a mile from AT&T Park which is walkable.

    « Holidays »

We stayed for 4 nights as a family with 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Hotel is basic and a bit expensive for the facilities offered. Service is very good , staff very friendly. Breakfast which is served by a separate company is OK though took long waiting time. We felt location is not ideal. Although it is closely located to the city center it is quite far from the nice locations like Pier 39 and the Italian district.

« Great location San Francisco »

Off the beaten track but close to every form of transportation available in San Francisco. Nice pool but too cool to use for me. Many others were in it. Most from Europe. Homeless in all directions heartbreaking. One block down catch a bus. A few more blocks and hop the cable car and then walk the hills. Get a pass for the MUNI and you have transport to the city. Found many quaint restaurants. Sam's Grill was a wonderful treat. Blue Barn had great salads and sandwiches. There is a little Japanese restaurant across the street where I felt as though the waitress was there to take care of me. A rare treat for a mom away from her home. Incredible adventures took us to Sonoma wineries and redwood forest. Nice photo opportunity under the golden gate bridge where the coast guard was located. Wonderful trip.

    « A comfy Bed »

This Hotel was not what I would have expected,,but it was very clean and tidy,,nearly lost our way finding the room but we learnt our way eventually,, the staff are wonderful, always helpful and full of suggestions on where to go and visit, or best place to eat, I give a BIG THUMBS up to the guys and gals, they made out stay wonderful,,there was even a laundry to wash all our clothes,,at our cost but that wasn't much. It was fairly central to most places and tours would pick you up at the hotel,,I can not recommend this hotel enough,,it was not 5 star but it certainly made up for it with wonderful staff and the best bed we had slept in since being in the USA,,Breakfast was in a small diner downstairs,,wouldn't recommend the oatmeal breakfast,,we are more used to a much less cluggy oats for breakfast,,,butter was whipped margarine,,but you could get used to it,,,everything was so great there you didn't mind the small things,,in my opinion it made our stay in San Francisco wonderful...Thanks Guys and Gals,,,

« Poor value for money »

This place has construction work going on at the moment in updating its restaurant which goes on between 9 AM and 5 PM . They do not warn you of this when you check-in and consequently you have a nasty surprise in the morning! Generally the family rooms are quite small and compared to other places the rooms have a low rent feel to them. I did not feel this hotel to be a very relaxed place to stay although it is centrally located. You may want to think about other options in the city.

« Best Western Plus, not so plus »

bad location, staff not helpful. rooms old, sink did not work, lighting was bad, best western reservations should not recommend this as Union Square location. Restaurant was not available to use. terrible layout of room locations.

« Affordable stay in downtown san francisco »

This hotel was surprisingly affordable, convenient, secure and clean. The decor is fun, too. The room made me feel like I was in a Jetsons cartoon. It also, was just about the quietest hotel we've ever stayed in, in San Francisco, because the rooms open on an inside courtyard. The location is convenient: an easy walk to Union Square, the Muni station, Museum of Modern Art. The valet parking was affordable, as well.

« Not worth the price »

Overall this is a fine room, but for the $300+ price tag, it is definitely not worth it. No Air Conditioner led to the room being stuffy and warm all night. There was a large window to open, but there was so much noise and commotion it couldn't be left open while sleeping. Ceiling fan in room was broken and I was not able to switch rooms to a room with a working fan. Very small room, not nearly worth the price, not even in San Francisco

« Decent Value in San Francisco »

We are doing a California road trip and this place met our expectations for somewhere convenient and of good value in San Francisco. This Best Western is uniquely decorated and was pretty quiet. The neighborhood seemed a little sketchy, however, we felt safe while staying. We understand that parking is very limited and that is the reason for the charge. Our room was OK but glad we were away from the action but close enough to walk. The staff was wonderful and we would recommended this place for a nice budget stay while visiting San Francisco.

« Best Western Plus Americania: Mod Decor, Adjacent to Action »

My husband and I stayed 3 nights recently during a trip to San Francisco. The mid-century hotel's architecture has been highlighted through the mod decor, which is color, sleek and clean. The housekeeping staff was great. Located in SoMo, the hotel location isn't in the middle of the action--but it is close enough to make it convenient to walk to Union Sq. And, parking was reasonable.

« Decent hotel for a short stay »

Good hotel for a short stay in SF. For a family of 3, the beds are narrow but they are decent rooms, with a nice retro look and a great shower. Not close to the popular areas but public transport around the corner, which is well organised. Many homeless people in this area. Very friendly and helpful personell.

« Good accommodations for a good price »

Spent two nights here for business. I'm from the Bay Area but not a SF expert. Walking you can take a right on 7th and a left on Market walk 10-15 minutes and your in the downtown shopping district. The room is small and colorful but not cramped. My only two problems were the door to the shower/toilet area bangs up against the toilet. And the shower looked clean but I found a booger with a hair on the shower wall. I've seen worse.

« Inexpensive for San Francisco »

At the date booking, July + Weekday it was not too expensive for San Francisco. Location is ok. Quite some homeless people in the neighborhood. Near Market street. Room was big but a little old fashioned. Very calm as it had a window to an enclosed yard!! Good beds.

« Expensive Parking Nice Otherwise »

While Best Western Plus Americana is comfortable and roomy, and even gave us BW points, I was surprised to see that parking daily was $35.00 a day, far too much. I didn't mind when they said they would put a "hold" of $100.00 on our credit card for damages because we are always thoughtful guests, but I didn't expect $70.00 to be eaten by parking there.

    « Expensive City Motel »

We stayed for 2 nights in June at a time when San Francisco hotel rates were very high. The Best Western was cheaper than some but still very expensive for what is really a 3 star inner city motel block. Our room was of average quality with a view over adjacent rooftops. Noise levels were low and the bed comfortable. The outdoor swimming pool looked good but we did not use it. A real shortcoming was the make-shift restaurant open only for limited breakfast options. Despite hotel promises to have new facilities available in summer, there was no evidence of any work being done. The staff were friendly but took a long time to reverse a $100 deposit charge on our credit card. The location near the Civic Center is fine for BART and tram access. However, if the rates are similar the nearby Holiday Inn Express is a far better hotel.

« Very Unique and cozy »

I loved this hotel I looked at a lot in the bay area and decided to go with the Best Western name. Very happy I did. It was retro, modern, cozy, and unique. Would love to stay here for a couple days. The parking was valet and the entire hotel felt very safe for me and my teen, who also loved the look and feel of the hotel.

    « Very good hotel... »

The neiborhood is not good at all. Far from the city and many homeless people all around the hotel. Otherwise the rooms are comfortable and clean. Fitness room is big and clean. Vallet parking and personal of the hotel are really nice and friendly

    « Good tourist hotel »

I stayed here for two nights courtesy of after there was an issue with the original hotel booking I made with them. The first hotel was on 6th Street and had lots more homeless and seedy looking people hanging around it at all times than this one. It is also really handy for both the train station as well as the light rail and bus system which are all within a two block walk. The room I had was definitely recently redecorated in what I would call "retro hipster" and was quite interesting. The pool seemed a little unnecessary but I was there during an unseasonably hot spell and discovered that the pool is actually very well heated and a pleasant place to hang out. There is a laundry open 24 hours a day that I utilised and I found the hotel staff all pleasant and friendly. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel or to stay at again.

    « San Francisco Americania »

Overall reasonable value for money in San Francisco (nothing is inexpensive here - doubly so during the summer tourist season). Room was clean, Staff friendly - and the valet accommodating of our needs to "self move" our mercedes diesel. Our only missgiving was our towel request was not honored (called front desk - was dumped into voice mail - we requested 1 extra towel set and never recieved it).

« Nice hotel in the city Center »

This best western hotel situated in 7th street is very close (by walk 200 Mts ) to the market street . The closest cvs is 200 Mts as well on market street . The room was very compact for 2 of us to stay and was in the front wing once u come out of the stairs of lift . Access card is required for entering the elevator or the stairs. the room in which we stayed was good and we did not have any problems , but my colleague and his family who also stayed in this hotel in the other wing had problems with people shouting in the road in he night . Ensure to ask for a room which would not have this problem . kettle was available in the room and the room was made clean daily ( we stayed here for 10 days ) and the staff at the reception were very friendly and helpful . Custom Burger shop was within the premises of the hotel and is one of the famous outlets for burger in the area . Apart from that there is a subway very close by and a Vietnamese hotel opposite to the hotel which serve good Asian food . As the market street is very close there is no worry about food options , with Burger King and start bucks all available around . There were quite a few Indian hotels in walking distance from the hotel . The major purpose of my stay was for conference in mascone convention Center in 5th street . This was hardly a 10 min walk from this hotel . Though there are no attractions near the hotel but as it is close to market street you get all type of transportations including Muni metro , cable cars and buses to reach all tourist destinations . Market street has a lot of shopping options as well including forever 21 , GAP, marshals and many others again walkable from the hotel . Westfield mall is 5 mins walk from the hotel. If you get to stay here , enjoy your stay and take care

« Best of the Best Westerns! »

I had stayed at 4 other Best Westerns in the past few months. What a pleasant surprise to find this gold mine in the heart of San Francisco! Priced right. My granddaughter loved the modern touch to the décor. And a heated rooftop pool! The staff was the friendliest I have ever encountered. They all went out of their way to accommodate us & make our stay a trip to remember. The location was convenient and very easy to get to. This will be one Best Western that we will make our "place to stay" in the city by the bay!

    « Definitely NOT a Bestwestern PLUS »

This hotel is in a horrible area. We were told two homeless shelters are near by and yes it was obvious. It almost seems like it was a "hourly " rental hotel and Bestwestern just bought it out. There were prostitutes roaming around outside anx the area looks dirty. The hotel for $300 is not worth the stay. The room was dated, clean, and bedding acceptable. Views from pool area were the only plus even though just on 2nd floor. Will not return.

« Great location, great decor and awesome staff »

This hotel is at a great location; it is of easy access to public transportation and to major tourist attractions in the city. if you like walking, then you can walk to a few of them. Yes, there are some homeless folks around and it is part of being in a big city. There are restaurants around and a CVS pharmacy a block away, right in the corner of Market Street and 7th street, where you can take the subway or Bart to wherever your destination is. The Civic center is also within walking distance. The hotel was clean, the staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the decor was super cute and contemporary, the room was comfortable and we didn't use the pool but we checked it out and it is heated and of easy access. I'll definitely stay at this hotel again when I go back to San Fran for leisure. Great value hotel.

« No Air Conditioning and Signs of Mold »

Although the staff were very friendly and the place is nicely decorated, there is no air conditioning in the rooms. Normally that wouldn't really bother us (while we were there it was in the 60s/70s during the day, but the room would be so hot and stuff by the time we returned that we would have to leave our door open to the hallway (which is open to outdoors) until the room cooled enough for us all to sleep. We had 3 little children so this was a big inconvenience and security issue for us, but there is no way anyone could sleep with it that hot. There was also mold on the light fixture in the bathroom (not surprising with how hot it got and stayed in the room. Breakfast is not included in the stay. The breakfast staff were nice and the food was okay but it was way overpriced. The hotel pool was also the temperature of a hot tub just about. Good for the fact it is pretty mild in SF, but not great for kids.

  • 2
    « not pleased »

area around this hotel is disgusting, homeless, prostitutes, drug dealers, you name it, not good. There is no AC in the hotel, it was hot, the rooms are cramped and very outdated. The staff was very nice but that couldn't make up for the area and old rooms and NO AC !

« One Night lay over »

We are in transit to honolulu and needed a hotel near SFO for a few hours. I stayed at this hotel because i didnt want to spend alot of money for a few hours. I am glad i did. Hotel has free shuttle service from sfo to hotel. It runs every 30 min. The room is clean. And most importantly, it doeant smell like old hotel. Bathroom water drains decent fir both shower and sink. What we got, a decent size room with two comfortable beds, a small bathroom but it was clean and modernize transformed. Carpet was clean. Room temperature was good.. And free breakfast. Although we did not have time to enjoy.

    « Great Stay »

It is not located in the best area (there are a lot of homeless), but it is very close to the transit that can get you to shopping centers and to the pier. Staff was very friendly and helpful. It is valet parking only. The valet staff are really nice and will guide you and will recommend places that are of walking distance. Clean room and nice pool! I would stay here again.

    « Clean and friendly »

Not in the best area, but a short walk to transit, shopping and attractions. very clean, nice decor, friendly staff.....would definitely stay here again. Used Bart transit from the airport, short walk to hotel from station

« Stayed in Goodhotel (sister Hotel) across the street »

As others state this is not the best of areas but we did not feel particularly threatened despite the number of homeless and people with very obvious mental health problems. The room was clean but in need of some care. The bathroom was clean the shower and other facilities worked well. Staff were pleasant and always helpfull. The main problem was noise as sound proofing was non existant and we were on the ground floor with the car park outside. To conclude, in the context of San Francisco which is a horrendously expensive city, this was a reasonably priced hotel which fulfilled its function. San Francisco generally needs to get its act together to do something about the homeless and sick people that are everywhere in the city!

« Good hotel, never mind the area »

Not located in the best area but just walk up to Market Street and turn right. Once you get to 6th, it's all fine. 7th has an atmosphere about it but we never felt unsafe. Hotel is good. Staff very helpful. Café Moma over the road on 7th is great for breakfast. Hotel is in easy walking distance for cable cars (at Market and Powell) and buses (on Market). Good value hotel in central SF. Parking expensive but the only viable option.

« We were very disappointed. »

Not in a good part of town. Very disappointed-lots of outside noise, small rooms, small shower, no air conditioning, stuffy and hot bathroom. Old, dated facility. However, the staff was very pleasant, cordial and helpful.

    « Pleasantly surprised »

The hotel isn't situated in the best area, but the hotel itself was great for an overnight stay. The parking has 24 hour security surveillance. Loved the décor of the rooms. Very clean. Pool looked great but we were only there overnight. The price was very reasonable compared the crazy prices other hotels were charging. Would consider staying there again

« Your money better spent being elsewhere »

If you wish to go back in time and pay a modern day premium price to stay in a room that is very tired - this is the hotel for you! The hotel is in desperate need of a reburb. It does not deserve the Best Western Plus accreditation based on other we have experienced (without issue)

    « Bad Valet Experience »

My car was damaged at the Valet parking and four days after check out I have yet to hear from the management staff concerning the damage and or how they plan to take care of the situation. Generally the hotel itself is very nice and in a decent location.

« Great find in the SOMA district »

Stayed here early May for several nights...Great staff very helpful our room was on the 4th floor away from the pool area very quiet. Although an older property it has been refurbished and very clean with great beds. The location is very close & walking distance to downtown & the Embarcadero.

    « Won't go back »

Restaurant and bar were closed for remodeling. The front desk then gave me walking instructions through the "hood" to find dinner. Compared to other Best Western hotels I have stayed in this one provided a very small room, below average bed for comfort and it was noisy.

This hotel is adequate. It has not bad proximity to do things in San Francisco. The courtyard is nice, but it is noisy and the windows in this facility could be better. Wasn't pleased with the quality of the breakfast at the MODERN BURGER.

« Decent rooms, problematic staff »

Fundamentally this is a motel-style hotel, with rooms opening on to walkways around a number of courtyards. It's kind of concretey, and the lift is a bit creaky, but it is what it is. If you want something super-slick, head over 2 blocks to the InterCon (where I spent the night before I came here!). The rooms are pretty funky though, with a more design edge than I would have expected for the price. The wifi was decent, and the beds were very comfy. I also liked the burger restaurant downstairs, including a well-stocked bar. I stayed here as part of a group embarking on a Trek America adventure the next morning and there was, to put it politely, an absolute disaster in terms of sorting out our room allocations. There were 5 of us staying there, 2 sets of 2 being paired up to share rooms, and 1 on her own. I arrived first, and the room that I was allocated on the list behind the desk wasn't ready. Instead of asking me to wait (that would have been fine!), they allocated me to a different room, and changed the number on my key envelope. I pointed out that they should also change the number on one of the other key envelopes (and re-make the key) so that another member of the group got a key to the room I was meant to be in. The guy behind the desk didn't understand this, or do it, and there was basically a chain of absolute disaster where they were handing out keys without writing down who they had given what to, handed out 3 keys to the same room, and there were tears at midnight. Eventually, someone managed to find out where the other room for our group was (not where it was meant to be - the guy on the desk had randomly given that to someone completely unrelated), and everyone had a bed. Then the fire alarm went off! So the hotel itself, and the facilities, were perfectly ok. But the front desk REALLY need to sort out their record keeping, and what they do when they spontaneously reallocate rooms (or just not do it).

« excellent front desk, Paul and the rest of the team did a great job. »

The area is not one you would gravitate to but the homeless population in SF in everywhere if you're staying downtown. The exterior of the hotel doesn't do the interior of the hotel justice. Was very impressed. The entrance to Custom Burger is not very inviting and appears to have been an after thought in comparison to the attention to detail offered just about everywhere else in the hotel. Think about redoing the signs and entry!! Standing at the front desk it just doesn't look very inviting although the food itself is quite good.

« Does not look like the website »

The hotel did not look nearly as nice as it appeared to be on the website, there were people drinking and smoking in the walkway, the air conditioning didn't work and the bed was rock hard. The room otherwise was just fine - functional and clean. And, the staff was very pleasant.

« Nice accommodations in downtown area »

The Americania is ideally located for access to theater and arts venues as well as public transportation. We attended a play at the Strand Theater and enjoyed a quick evening walk back to the hotel. Chinatown, Yerba Buena Gardens, and other attractions were easily explored on foot. The Civic Center transportation center was close by and gave us easy access to Clarendon Heights to visit our daughter, and to the SF Zoo.

« Clean, well located but paper thin walls »

We stayed several days in April 2016. The amenities and location were good but the noise levels through the walls, floor and ceiling were straining at best. Also, no notice of major demolition and construction of immediate neighbouring property is poor form. Would not stay again.

« Nice Front Desk personnel »

Was a little upset when we first pulled up and the adjoining restaurant was closed..after being told earlier that day it was available for dinner. Staff bent over backwards to accommodate and was pleasantly surprised with the nice room. Downside..recommended a local restaurant that was awful..should have looked into other options..but tired and hungry. Beds were ultra comfortable, nice bedding, lots of pillows. Warm salt water pool and a gym on site.

« If only it wasn't so Noisy »

Like every one else, I also found the staff friendly, polite and very competent. The hotel is well located, close to buses and the BART, and it was really good value for money. The room was fine, quite small, but if you travel to San Francisco to stay in your room, then you're doing it wrong. It was maybe a little musky like it needed airing. Perhaps it was just where my room was located, but it was so noisy, like I was sleeping in the middle of the street, at a carnival next to a fire station and a racetrack that was having a fireworks display. I do understand that the hotel can't really control what happens on the street but I hardly slept at all. Why would garbage trucks collect garbage at 4am? There were people arguing, people singing, people fighting, skateboarding, sirens, trucks, more fighting, it just didn't stop. Avoid room 338 at all costs or use ear plugs, noise cancelling headphones and a sound proof hat. It's very good value and the staff are really friendly and you're close to some pretty decent restaurants, but wow, unfortunately the noise is off the scale.

« Nice Hotel well located »

We had a family room, with 5 people. It was quite spacious considering (especially for San Francisco). Nicely decorated. Price was quite reasonable for San Francisco. Easy walk to public transport and convenience store, and walkable distance to central city area. There were a couple of homeless people around, but it's the centre of the city, so is only to be expected. They were never any difficulties. The only odd thing was that it didn't have a fridge. When we asked, they had one, and put it in our room - so if they don't have what you want, be prepared to ask, as they may have it stored somewhere else. The internet worked really well. The staff were always very friendly and welcoming to all visitors. Noise from others did enter room easily, but didn't appear to be a party hotel.

« Cute but small for a family of 5 or greater »

Very cute rooms, just small beds and small room. It served it's purpose and we had a great nights sleep once all calmed down from neighboring customers. (thin walls) Wish they had a complimentary breakfast like at other Best Western Hotels.

« Nice hotel in SF downtown »

Nice hotel in SF downtown. Very clean, spacious rooms, comfortable beds. Unfortunately this is very expansive hotel. I paid over 180USD by night and in my opinion isn`t worth of that money. Hotel is good, but only good. In that price you`ve completely nothing except room - no breakfast, even no water in room. So I think is overpriced. Espacially that is dangerous neighbourhood with a lot homeless people sleeping in the street.

« Convenient to SF downtown »

Good experience at this "south of Market" motel. Staff was excellent. Room had perfumed odor. Did not use cafe. Pool was great! Workout room very convenient. Quiet, clean room. Great value. Located just two blocks from BART and all Market Street transportation. Very safe during the day. Be careful after dark walking to and from motel. You can save $$$ over fancier SF hotels without sacrificing quality.

« Noisy hotel in SOMA, San Francisco »

Stayed here for a conference at Moscone center West a 10 minute walk. Hotel shows its age. Staff are polite & helpful. Very good Public transportation near by. Restaurants & bars are again plenty but a 10 minute walk. The big drawback for me is the noise level. The room had asingle pane window which is a no-no. I got woken up when the trash/ recycle trucks come early in the morning.

« "Last Minute" selection Paid Off »

We learned our cruise was delayed at the last minute and were in a panic to find an available room. After several calls, we secured a room at the Best Western Plus Americania. Not centrally located for our needs, we would not normally stay there; and frankly we were a bit concerned when we arrived. However, once inside we were pleasantly surprised. Very friendly and efficient staff. Large, very comfortable room on 4th floor of a 60/70's motel/hotel configuration. Room was very clean. Bed very comfortable. See my review of the Custom Lounge which is located within the hotel. Also a pleasant surprise. This hotel charges typical SF rates, and we would rather have been on the cruise ship; but considering the circumstance, this was a pleasant option.

    « Comfortable, stylish »

The hotel check in was great, the check out was easy, the hotel is clean, cozy and has aweseome customer service :) We enjoyed our stay and the location of the hotel was great. We look forward to going back again in the future.

    « Bad location »

Hotel has a 60/70's feel in the rooms as far a decor. For visitors to San Fransisco this place is in a bad location. Near downtown but if you have to walk around the area is bad. Probably will skip this place next time. But staff are friendly and the place is clean.

« Great staff, comfortable stay »

Stayed at the Best Western for business. The staff was exceptional and the room shabby, but with a comfortable bed, so since I was only there to sleep, that was ok with me. My one complaint was that I had to turn on the bathroom fan and light to get the light above the vanity to work. That should be fixed. Waste of energy.

« Updated Boutique Hotel in Downtown SF »

The room was decorated very nice, bed was very comfortable, and room was very clean. Staff was friendly and efficient and also let me check-in well before the stated time which was extremely helpful. Great location and very easy to get around the city. Close to BART and the Westfield Mall. Very good value for SF. I would definitely stay here again. I rated it Average for the sleep quality only because of the noise level but you would get the same at any hotel in downtown SF.

    « family fun time »

I was happy with the smiles on my 2 daughters with the TRENDY décor and yummy food at BW americania. I chose this place due to Orlando from the front desk and his wonderful phone manor and once we met Christina we wanted to stay for a week!

« Poor quality, over rated »

I stay in Best Westerns 2-3 months per year. This hotel is not a plus hotel by any case. Room #227 stank badly from some type of cleaner. The brown bag so called breakfast is an insult- this hotel is charging $300-$400 per night and the front desk hands out a small brown bag with an orange and apple juice? Hotel so called restaurant refused to honor best western gift card and is a bad atmosphere for children. The pool was full of brown algae so we gave up on it. Garbage in courtyard and all around grounds. Immediate hotel vicinity full of street people although location near metro convenient.

« Great place to stay »

Super staff, nice rooms, warm pool. It can be a little noisy as it is in the city, and the building is older/less insulated. If you are a light sleeper, ask to be placed away from the street. Lots of cool places to eat within walking distance. Again - it is a city, so there are homeless people, but I didn't have ANY problems.

    « Great Value »

San Francisco is EXPENSIVE! Get over it! This place is a bargain. It's not one of the upscale neighborhoods. So, some more picky people may be uncomfortable. But, if you need to be in the more upscale areas you will pay 2-3+ times more. This was walking distance from the places I wanted to go and I never felt uncomfortable. There are plenty of places to eat nearby. Try the "Thirsty Bear" for microbrew, Sangria and Tapas!

    « No surprise »

Need a room to spend a few hours and decided to book trying the "surprise" website. Did not get the hotel suggested but ended up with Great Western on 7th street. Check in was quick and was handed key to a room fronting the street. Will think twice using the "surprise" web site for booking next time. Room was small by US standard but it was clean and everything one needs for a sleep is there. Shower pressure was good and towels were clean and white. At 2pm i could hear the next door guests returned from wherever and there were at least a group of 10 shutting and laughing. Street traffic noise ended after midnight but was very apparent after 7am. The hotel is near to BART station if that is important to you, other than that , there is not much to say about this establishment besides the price is reasonable for this city.

    « Great Staff! »

The staff was absolutely great and extremely helpful. The staff allowed me to use the conference room without charge as I did not need any of the equipment. The staff visited me in my room and walked me over. Also, I received a complementary bagged breakfast even though I did not stay the night before.

    « Great staff »

The staff at this hotel is wonderful - from check in to check out. Everyone was so kind & thoughtful. The beds of the hotel have a great sleeping quality. The rooms are very clean. The location is so-so: it is close to many stores, pharmacies, etc. but there are many homeless people in the area. The walls of the room also appear to be very thin - I could hear my neighbors when it was very quiet and there was a lot of street noise overnight. However, if you aren't a light sleeper, this isn't much of a bother. Overall, great service, clean rooms, and good location.

    « Don't judge a book by it's cover »

I recently went to SF to see a ballet and picked this hotel because it was close to the location of the ballet. When I pulled up I said to my self " This is going to be bad" but because it was too late to change I decided to go forward. I'm very pleased to say that it was so much better than that first impression. The lobby was clean and the staff was great. Overall once I was inside it was like another world. the rooms are a bit on the small side but very well decorated and the bed was outstanding. I will stay there again.

    « I supose I would stay here again »

The bad: I stay in San Fran every year, for the past 5 years it has been a different hotel, so I get to "judge" a lot of them. So, my impression was horrible. My husband and I had been on the road for several days and were looking forward to chilling out at this hotel. I walk in, to check in, while the husband is unloading the car. I tell the guy at the counter that we are here (and hell yes we are special, we are checking in after 3:00 PM). The dude behind the counter points to a guy who is reading a paper and sitting on the couch and tells me that he is "first:. What? I mean seriously, say you are backed up or you have some issues....I have been on the road for 9 hours and you are going to point to some rando and say that is the hold up? The Good: We stayed for a week. Things were clean. The neigborhood was fine if you aren't a scardy cat.

    « Great Staff »

The staff at this hotel are wonderful. They can't do enough for you. From the maids to the front desk, they were great. Even the maintenance people were very helpful. Rooms were very clean and WiFi was perfect. They even had a little parting gift for you. It was easy access to buses and trolleys. Plenty of restaurants in the area to choose from to eat.

« The Oasis in the center of San Francisco »

The Best Western PLUS Americania, San Francisco is truly an enjoyable experience. The Staff shines, the decor is enticing, and the location is central to all the public transport. One of our very best Best Western experiences. We would definitely return to this hotel for our future San Francisco experiences.

    « Sad Francisco »

Unknown to me (and partly my fault for not knowing), this place is located very close to a part of town filled with many clubs and a very seedy element. Noise from other guests was an issue during our stay. Drug use by other guests was an issue during our stay. Management was hardly sympathetic upon our reporting of this. I wonder if they're so used to it that they're just desensitized. The exterior of the hotel is very dated, partly painted with dirt and partly painted with old paint. The interior is contemporary, practically everything has been replaced, with the exception of the original thermostat and AC unit. On site is a burger place, with the typical overpriced hotel food. Free coffee in the lobby was good. All that being said, if you're into that sort of clubby, seedy culture, go for it, this is the place for you. But if you're looking for a friendly, cozy place to sleep, keep looking.

    « BW plus SF »

Seriously check in person if you have to, any of these properties, prior to visiting SF. Had the City Mayor had not put an all out "move to the beach or be jailed, this would have been a challenging event. Stay away from this place if there is anything decent in you.

« Nothing Plus About It »

Don't know why this hotel is rated as "Plus". We had a very basic room in which we couldn't even control the temperature. The room got very hot at night and no matter what we did to the thermostat, the temperature didn't go down. There were no amenities such as a fridge, just two beds, a tv, and two chairs. We could hear the people upstairs walking around and it kept waking us up. Location was good, the room was clean, and the employees were pleasant.

« Great Value for the cost »

This is our second visit to the Best Western Plus Americana in San Francisco. We are very pleased with this hotel. The rooms are clean, staff friendly and willing to answer questions. Showers hot, bed comfortable. The safe is big enough to hold my laptop. All the basics that we needed to make our stay comfortable. The little restaurant attached to the hotel sells a fantastic breakfast for a reasonable price. The hotel is an easy 1 1/2 block from the Bart so access from the airport is easy. Overall a good place for the price

« Very nice room, but got no rest, and not good or safe for pets. »

I called ahead and asked about this hotel because I knew I needed to bring my dogs with me on this trip. I was told that I could have a ground floor room, and that this was a pet friendly place. I asked if there were places nearby to walk my dogs, and was told that yes, there was. While the room of this hotel was one of the nicer places I've stayed, the overall stay was so bad that I checked out at 6am after just 12 hours there. Pro: On sight valet parking - Con: $35 per night. Pro: Nice room - Con: So much noise I got no rest. Pro:The allow dogs. - Con: They charge $25 per dog PER NIGHT. Pro: Location to downtown - Con: VERY UNSAFE neighborhood. Pro: Nice staff -Con: Staff can't make it safe or quiet. The hotel is a multi level property, and there is a central courtyard in the center of the property, so all of the rooms open to an area below that is tiled and has gazing pools of water. It appears pretty. But all the sounds reverberate up against the walls and my room was very noisy! I could distinctly hear a woman walking in high heels, I think that was on the floor below. I could hear conversations, every word, even though people were not talking in loud voices. At 3:37am, there was a pounding noise that sounded like it was coming from the court yard below. I could also hear sirens, helicopters, dogs barking, horns honking, etc. Now, I realize this is a city, and there will be city noises. I am fine with that. I have stayed in hotels in major cities before (L.A. Sacramento, Portland, London, New York, Phoenix, etc.) So I am aware of what usual city noises are. I know they can't do anything about sirens and helicopters. But the room had very little sound insulation. So, I was awakened by the noises myself, or my dogs alerted to what they were not accustomed to. And yes, my dogs have traveled with me a lot, and have stayed in many hotel / motel rooms. There was no place nearby to take my dog for a pee break. In fact, I stared to take her for a walk and the valet warned me I should not venture down the street that ran perpendicular to the property. The other choice was walking her down the paved sidewalk along the very busy 7th street. I thought the side street was the best option. I was oh so wrong. There were many street people. A guy asked me to give him a cigarette and got very angry when I told him I don't smoke. Another homeless guy looked me up and down as if he were considering something. Finally I found a small parking lot and tried to get my dog to do her business (she doesn't need a lot of grass but some small patch really helps.). An older man walked into the fenced parking lot. I thought maybe he lived in the unit that had a door facing the parking lot. No, he just stopped there to pee. Finally I gave up. At 5am the next morning, since I wasn't sleeping anyway and my dog hadn't peed for at least 14 hours, I decided to try and walk her, hoping a quieter city might help. I had been told about a 'park' a few blocks away. So we went walking. Well, I did find the 'park' but it was bordered by chain link fence, and a very large man was standing at the corner. He was threatening until I proved to him that I was not afraid to defend myself. But it was scary. So, the room was nice, the bed was comfortable, etc. But I got NO rest, my dogs were upset the entire time, I nearly got mugged, and those 12 hours cost me $256. I checked out at 6am and went in search of another hotel. I will never stay here or anywhere near again. To be fair, my business associates ended up staying there, and they said the noise was not the same in their rooms. It is possible I was in a room with no insulation or an older room or something. But I won't recommend this place.

    « Area a little sketchy »

I booked this hotel because it was close to the venue where a concert was playing and although I walked to and from the event I was a little apprehensive about the area late at night. There were people sleeping on the streets, people talking to someone I couldn't see and needles on the ground. Out of respect for the people in the area, there were no incidents that I witnessed and I was never bothered in any way. The restaurants in the area were great but most were only open until 3 pm. The hotel was clean and it was like staring in a David Lynch movie. The decor was very retro. Our window was always left open after the maid came so I would recommend putting your valuables in the safe. The staff were friendly and helpful and the price seemed fair. It stated that the pool was open but every time I went up, the door was locked. Onsite weight room was clean. It was noisy at night as our door opened to the outside and many occupants forgot that people could be sleeping on the other side. Bar was closed for rents and never tried the restaurant.

« Business trip with group of 20. »

Rooms are well appointed - have a retro look which is nice. Staff are excellent and rooms are kept clean! No complaints there. Some of our group had problems with the smell of the some cleaner they use. Also other technical issues were reported and solved. $35 mandatory valet parking fee/day felt excessive. Very noisy in the weekends, since people come late at night at 3 to even 6 am and chat and scream if there is no tomorrow, while apparently not hindered by security. Burger restaurant in hotel is not worth the visit, plus there is no breakfas, but there was a take away bag at the reception with some fruit and a drink available. Neighbourhood is awful. Homeless people camped out, while they seemed harmless. Some near by shops and places seem a bit shabby. Since the place is at walking distance (15 to 25 min) of the city center, this hotel might be interesting for exploring town, but I have seen better.

    « Business in SF »

Went to the City for Business Pleasure Diner with Group of Friends from Chicago Title. Love the City anyway and had such a great time. The Best western Americana was very clean, comfortable and Kind Employees. I felt Safe and the Best part we had parking at hotel.

« Special Thanksgiving day with Family »

Myself, daughter and grandson arrived to the hotel after 11:30pm. We had traveled from Fresno by Amtrak train. Long day with a 3 year old on his first train ride. The staff was very helpful. The room décor was Outstanding. The red and black colors with the unique art work. We were impressed. Comfortable beds, clean well maintained. It was on the second night when I was saying my good byes to only son when the nice guy from the front desk came outside and asked me if I was ok? because I had been crying because of my son leaving back to the Salvation Army Rehab for another 5 months. We will return to this hotel again in February. Thank you Best Western staff for being so Caring.

    « Good hotel »

I was skeptical after reading other reviews. The hotel was clean. Staff friendly Parking was 35.00 which is below the average for San Francisco We had no problems with the location even though it isn't the best. We had a suite with three beds. It worked out great with our two teen age grandchildren. We would definitely stay there again. Nana 75. 1/09/16

« NICE HOTEL, POOR LOCATION, some deficiencies »

Rooms are well appointed - have a retro look which is cool. Staff are excellent! No complaints there. $35 mandatory valet parking fee/day felt excessive and unnecessary. Restaurant (burger joint) in hotel not worth the visit, plus there is no breakfast. The neighbourhood is sketchy. Garbage strewn across parking lots and sidewalks. Homeless people camped out.

    « A cute little hotel. »

Impressed with the delightful interior and modern looking furnishing. Very clean. Need a better coffee/hot water device though. The rest is functional. The Staff are friendly. Tried their hot breakfast, which was not bad.

    « Not that perfect »

Beware all, this location is towards the south end of market street where surrounded by homeless people. Just beware where you walk to. Rooms do not have air conditioning. Heater is undersized for the size of the room. I was there during winter so not too bad after all. Another negative point was the on-site laundry service. I wanted to change quarters for my washing. The lobby does not have the change. Ridiculous. Suggest they install a money changer in the laundry.

    « Don't stay here »

The décor is modern and fun and the staff is great. The air quality of the room was horrible. I felt disgusting after I left and had an asthma attack due to the mold. The carpet was damp and felt gooey. We were charged over $400 for one night (New Year's Eve) and I would have rather slept in my vehicle.

    « Noisy/Filthy Location »

At night, as I was walking back to the hotel, I noticed urine on the street, and actually walked on human excitements. The area is really filthy. At night, the rooms are not sound proof. We heard people delivering drugs to other people in the rooms. The AC is barely working and it's very noisy. The employees are very nice. They tried their best to satisfy everyone.

« Front Desk Manager Stacy is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!! »

I normally don't write reviews but often people tell the bad and not the good. Stacy from the front desk was absolutly amazing. Stacy went out her way to make sure my stay was memoriable...... I would stay here again.

    « Excellent Customer Service »

I had to stay here for a couple of days last week while my house was being renovated and I couldn't be happier with my choice! The front desk staff was awesome and made me feel at home. Kudos to Jasmine and Lorence for going above and beyond to make my stay pleasurable. From listening to my stressful situation to calling my room just to make sure everything was up to par. You're entire staff is awesome! I loved it so much I had to extend one more night. Will definitely be coming back in the near future.

« Location and Service Quality is Perfect! »

The location of the hotel, staff, service and rooms are really good and I advice anyone to stay there. Because comparing other hotels in the city, price and quality balance is perfect. Even if you don't have breakfast there, they take good care of you by offering grab and go packages:)

    « San Fransico »

I enjoyed the retro look of the hotel. It was in a convenient spot near the Orpheum Theater and Union Square. The staff was friendly and helpful. The heater was loud, so we didn't you it. The room was perfect for 5 people.

    « Room was ok »

We stayed there for 3 nights .. The room was ok and clean .. It's just too small. The parking isn't free.. They ask for $40 per day so total of $120, but when we checked out, they returned the money back $30.. We like the amenities .. No refrigerator

« Centrally located. Recently upgraded interiors. Very Pleasant Customer Service »

We stayed in a two-room suite on the 3rd floor overlooking the parking entrance. One bedroom w/King, the other w/2 Queens. Single shared bathroom w/an undercounter refrigerator and counter coffee pot. Rooms were very clean and recently updated furnishings. Only complaint is there was a party in the rooms above us that began at 2am. We called then and it quieted down for about 15 minutes and then was very loud until we called again at 3:30am, again brief quiet and then super-loud. After our 4:30am call the hotel called in security and evicted the people from their rooms. In the morning the Desk Mgr was very sorry and compensated our stay. Handled the situation very professionally.

    « SF TRIP »

We were in Santa Clara for 3 days to catch the 49ers game and decided to head up to SF for a day. I came across this hotel and saw the rates were reasonable (for SF) so we gave it a shot. The first day turned out to be a nightmare because we had a plumbing issue and our bathroom and vanity area got flooded. Management at the hotel were amazing and went above and beyond the call of duty for us. We switched rooms and ended up staying for an extra day so we could still wander around San Fran like we had planned. They also gave us free breakfast for 2 and waived our parking fee for the inconvenience. The hotel is very nice and we absolutely LOVED our suite! It's right in the middle of everything so it doesn't take long to get anywhere from there. It's almost like staying in your own apartment in SF because it was so comfortable there. We will definitely stay here again next time we take the trip up north. 5 stars

« Stacy Nicholson, Thank You for Kind Consideration & Generosity!!! »

Having a comfortable stay at this hotel last month was priority for me. Nevertheless, the Front Desk team was very welcoming & of course the Front Desk Manager; Stacy Nicholson was so in tack with all her guests & employees. For the same reason for my last stay, I had to book another room. I contacted Nicholson and she took care of my stay, more than I anticipated. My sister had surgery @ UCSF & the accommodations that were made for us were phenomenal. More than anticipated. Not only was the room upgraded, but was wheelchair accessible, since my sister had eye-surgery. I was heartfelt & I really felt Nicholson read my email & took care of our needs for the recovery process. Everyone knew who I was & our room had enough needs for 3 guests. I cannot express how appreciative I am that I know I'm safe & welcomed here at this hotel. I have a Go-to even at short notice, whenever surgeries are needed for my sister. Most importantly, the comfort of the stay, by far was the most pleasant. I just commend Nicholson for being such a gracious, caring & kind person. I see the surroundings & incidents that happen to occur throughout the day, and she is well-mannered, knows how to deliver and keep her composure in a fast-paced atmosphere.

« Where NOT to stay in San Francisco »

The homeless are everywhere, the valet parking is $35.00, and then they had a tax on top of that. City taxes are unavoidable, but a nuisance. and then they add an "occupancy tax" which to me is terrible. You pay a tax on staying in a room.

    « Good for a night »

There were way too many taxes and hidden fees, otherwise it was in a great location and very good service here. I would reccommed this place as long as they are aware of the extra fees and taxes that were not apparent on the website. Considering it was for my birthday celebration I tried not to get upset over all the extra money I had to pay. It was within walking distance from a bar which was one good thing.

« Start of our tour of California »

Generally speaking the hotel is clean, quiet and the staff we encountered were pleasant and helpful (it's the training). The biggest issue is the location on the south side of Market Street, just across from Tenderloin - it's just not a pleasant walk back to the hotel in the evening because of the number of people who are forced to live on the streets (like many towns in Britain during the Thatcher years). There was never any real threat, but I was glad that there were four of us (two couples) on the trip and what do you do when lewd comments are shouted in the street after your wife? I would stay away from this area if I went to San Fransico again. This was our first trip to California and I was suprised by the contrast between this area and other parts of Sn Fransisco.

    « Poor »

Very poor location. The room seemed very dirty inside and the exterior was not welcoming. I will never stay here again. The staff was ok. The room was definitely not worth the price. There were better options for the same price. I decided to stay here because it was close to where I needed to be. However, next time I will stay at a better hotel and walk / cab.

    « Poor service »

We stayed here, for the third time, on our most recent visit to San Francisco, checking in at 3.00pm. We were offered a room on the third floor that overlooked the main road. I asked for a quiet room only to be told there wouldn't be one ready for an hour....fine, we would go shopping. Returned two hours later, different reception staff... checked in and given keys to a room....overlooking the main road. Returned to reception and the young lady was quite rude when we asked to change room. Surely the room that was being prepared should have been allocated to us? Only one chair in the bedroom....two people staying in it. Noisy 'fridge. When I asked to speak to the manager he was "too busy" Not sure we will make a further visit.

« Noisy, dirty and in a dodgy neighborhood »

Noisy, dirty and in a dodgy neighborhood. Also, on top of this, there is a hidden 30$ / day fee for parking. Stay away from this Hotel. The room itself is okay, all the rest really terrible. acoustic insulation is zero, super noisy in the night.

    « Poor Choice »

The valet and personnel were very good but the hotel is a joke. They advertise a restaurant, but they serve very limited items and there is no service. It IS NOT a restaurant. The bed was very uncomfortable. There were no electrical outlets in the room. They have a coffee maker in the room with no place to plug it in. They have a desk in the room, and no outlets to charge a computer, etc.

« Shady area of town. Needs refurbishing »

Located in a shady area of town. The hallways are in the open air with the rooms facing a courtyard. Constant sound of people walking and talking and smoking. The room is not very clean (carpet, towels)

« Cute Midcentury style hotel getaway »

Love this place! My only quibble is that many of the rooms have no A/C and even tho SF is usually cool, the rooms have floor to ceiling windows which face the sun all day and the rooms get extremely warm, even with the blackout curtains drawn. Our room was 80+ the entire time, even with the door propped open most of the night. Other than that, this hotel is adorable. Midcentury decor in all areas. Clean Lobby with computers and printers for use of guests. Free high-speed wifi that is actually high speed enough to watch streaming movies. Parking is a bit expensive at $35/day, but the valets take great care of your car. Pool is adorable, if only SF weren't always a windtunnel in SOMA. Rooms were quiet from street traffic even though they are on a major street. TV Channels are a bit lacking, but free HBO is good. Will definitely stay here again.

« Cost effective, a rare haevn for the smoker! »

OK the hotel is retro 60's but it grew on us. The setup is somewhat like embassy suites most rooms around a court yard. As mentioned the rooms are 60's looking and quaint. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. It was close to trolley line and F Bus as they call it so easy to get anywhere. The only negative I can state is there is no air conditioning but they told me about this and end of October there was no need but you should consider it. I am a smoker and the ability to have the occasional smoke was great and the open air of the court yard did not affect a sole so don't be a hater All in all I would for sure go back again and was far cheaper that supposedly better locations and we were on a budget.

« Convenient but not wonderful »

Located close to Bart and Muni, this is a convenient location. We visited during a very hot spell in SF (unusual) and the small window and lack of air conditioning made the room stifling. The ceiling fan did help make it survivable. The room was off a courtyard which could make it a bit noisy at times. The window has a screen but it would be easy to break into the room from the courtyard; there is no way to lock the window into a partially open position. The decor is meant to be funky but felt rather shabby. The bed was comfortable, the facilities OK. A very average breakfast could be had at the burger place attached. Nearby on 6th is Dotties True Blue Cafe, which is excellent. Skip the burger joint and head over early. The staff is very helpful and the room was always kept clean. The neighbourhood is filled with homeless people and, while we had no problems at any time, can feel threatening. This is not really a tourist area but it is easy to get to areas that are popular by bus or underground. Overall: a mixed rating. OK rooms, pleasant staff, unpleasant area but good transportation. There is a small outdoor pool which is very comfortable. If it isn't hot the room temperature would be fine. The price was very high for what it offered and I would look to others first.

« Good place to stay. »

Good hotel in SOMA but very overpriced ($230 per night). Great if you are in SF to enjoy the startup sphere. Swimming pool is good but quite small. Same for the sports room. We had a weird smell in the bathroom btw (room 412). Great location (near the Bart).

« Overnight visit in SF »

Overall the hotel was nice in cleanliness, decor and service. It was unusually warm late October and the windows don't open very wide (no air conditioning) but I would stay here again. We ate breakfast in the cafe that's part of the hotel and it was very reasonably priced and good.

    « A generous 3 star review! »

Booked the best western plus American on the basis it was value for money (SF can be seriously pricey) and with the idea it being a chain hotel it was bound to be of a fair standard......hmm I'm not so sure. We checked in late Friday night and were on the 2nd floor, signs a bit confusing as to where the numbered room were but we eventually found it. We were suppose to get a double room with ONE bed, but on entering we had a twin room withTWO beds! I phoned reception and explained were were booked for a double and could we change to our correct room" sorry no check back tomorrow we are sold out tonight!" I was told rudely! So we checked back the next day and still nothing they could only offer the correct room for our last night which would be pretty pointless, so we stayed. Hotel is ok, on the surface the decor looks cool but on closer inspection it's pretty tired. Not bad location wise, easily walkable up to market street and we used the trolleys a lot. Maps are available in reception which is helpful. Annoying one day when the maid changed my bed she took my pyjamas with the sheets and I never saw them again, not a massive miss as they weren't expensive but the maid could do to be more careful!!! The hotel has custom burger restaurant connected to it for hotel guests and the public alike. Food is actually pretty good -yummy homemade burgers but it really depends what kinda food you like this might not be for you! The hotel also has a small bar area which is ok, lacks atmosphere and fun! And the worst thing of all - whilst enjoying a drink after coming in from dinner out, a mouse, yes a MOUSE ran across the floor from one side of the room to the other!!! This begs the question really how clean is this place? Finally the worst and the most annoying part of our stay was that we had pre arranged with reception for a later check out as our flat wasn't till late afternoon, so we had gone for a 1.30pm check rather than 12. When my boyfriend tried to use the key card after 12 it wouldn't work so went to reception to say, so it could be sorted to be told he needed the person that the room was booked under and ID. He came back to the pool and told me and I went down, Paul the receptionist said he needed ID , I explained I dint have it on me and it was in the room and all he could say was he needed ID as he didn't know who was!! He then asked my name and room number ( so now you know who I am and which room) and then rang for maintenance and made the poor maintenance man escort me up to my room open the door for me and get my ID before he would let me have the key!! Slightly ridiculous and considering we had a prearranged check out completely unnecessary and disorganised! All in all it was an average stay, we were only here 4 nights and out everyday most of the day and ate out most nights so only really slept in the hotel so did the the job for that purpose but I wouldn't book it for anything else and perhaps not at all after the mouse incident!!

    « Great Service »

The staff was excellent, beyond expectations, they were very helpful, offering many options and assistance and helpful opinions upon my first stay in San Francisco. The staff promptly served the room and responded promptly regarding issues.

« Comfortable stay for short break »

We stayed for 4 nights for our holiday in San Francisco. The rooms are clean and comfortable. As we spent most of our time out of the room and sight seeing this hotel did the job. The hotel was nice and quiet at night, with no particular concerns. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to union square, however there are a number of homeless people on the walk. Some of them were a tad odd, but we never felt unsafe on the walk!

« It looks more like a motel »

Bedroom and bathroom spacious . All rooms open onto an interior courtyard and are closed in front by a large glass window, so there is no privacy, It is necessary to keep the curtains closed and therefore the small open part of the window can not promote ventilation. There is no air conditioning. In San Francisco's summer is a real punishment remain in bedroom. Remains always a discrete smell of moldy carpet. Friendly staff. Very bad breakfast.

« Never staying there again... »

This hotel fell far below my expectations. I flew into SFO on business and did not know which neighborhood was considered shady. I quickly found out this hotel was not for me. After 10 minutes of being at the property, checking in and getting to my room. I knew I could not stay in the hotel. I wanted out. I called to cancel from the 3rd party company I made the reservation with. The rep was very helpful. She called the hotel manager who tried to offer a bigger room. However, that wouldn't have resolved anything. I requested that she cancel my reservation which she did. But the hotel manager said they were not going to cancel or refund my money as I already paid for 3 nights. I went to the front desk and checked out all the while itching because my body started reacting to just being there. I hoped I could offer the manager 1 night's rate for a refund of the remaining 2 nights since I did put them out of a room for all of 30 minutes. She refused! I simply got an uber and left for a 4 star hotel I found online in a safer neighborhood (financial district). Prior to leaving, I informed the manager that i would be disputing the charge and she really didn't care.

    « Not so great »

Although the rooms were clean, fairly modern and beds comfy the location was not great. We didn't feel completely safe on the streets which isn't good particularly with our young kids. From 5th street, around 2 blocks away (closer to the wharf), the dynamics of the streets changed and it felt much cleaner and safer. Next time I would just find somewhere near the wharf, it may cost a little more but worth it.

« Beds looked more comfortable at Alcatraz. »

Its mostly our fault for not scoping out the area before we stayed. It is dirty with homeless people everywhere, not that we are normally bothered by this, but even as a young couple we have been and stayed all over California, Africa and Europe we did not feel safe. Drunks and crazies everywhere on lady actually tried to spit in my husbands face. Faeces on the pavement etc. They are all around the hotel and we could here them arguing and fighting in the street outside our window. (which i tried to open once, it almost fell out the frame). This is not the hotels fault, but the security could be higher, especially at night. Rooms are damp, mould on walls around the window, and wet spots in the carpet. the rooms are decorated to be modern, yet there is no aircon, wifi is sparse and our in-room phone didn't work. Beds so un-comfy like a block of wood. Noisy people upstairs too, walls and floors are paper thin. Paid $30 a day for parking, yet our car was next to the street with tramps all around it, and got covered in pigeon poop. The only saving grace was that the reception staff are wonderful, helped us with queries and did there best to make us feel welcome. The nearest tram is only 2 blocks away, not far at all but we didn't want to make the trip after dark. Honey moon let down considering this hotel was very expensive! Only reason we didn't move hotels is because it was Fleet Week - everything else was fully booked at the last minute.

    « No A/C, not a great neighborhood »

I stayed here on business. Stayed 4 days. The weather was warm, and this hotel does not have A/C, so the room was uncomfortably warm at night. The neighborhood is also a bit dodgy. I don't think I'll stay here next time.

« Clean, conveniently located hotel »

I was worried by previous reviews especially as we had young children. I needn't have been. While there are homeless around, they keep to themselves and the hotel is located one block from transport and the city centre. A great coffee shop (sight glass) is just down the street too. The hotel is clean and the parking comvenient. Our room was very hot and we had to request another fan that didn't do much to help. The staff were friendly and efficient. I would stay here again.

« Nice motel friendly staff »

This motel is in the SOMA district of San Fransisco, staff were all friendly, parking staff were great. Room was basic, little bit musty smelling, no aircon, but enough room for the 4 of us . 2 x double beds. Burger bdownstairs was good nice food and not too expensive. Parking onsite was quite expensive at $35 a night but it is cheaper than paying for parking elsewhere.

    « Possibly Excellent »

People at front desk really nice...comfortable, clean, safe hotel for visit to the theatre would stay there again. Pool was really a nice surprise, would like to see the lounge open later and pool earlier to bump this place up to excellent ...

« Very expensive for old and dirty hotel »

the pictures on their profile looks good but it isn't anything near it. the rooms were so small and old. it is not sound proof, i could basically hear the next room snoring. they charge a lot for overnight parking, about $40 a night and no, it was not listed on their site. the shower head was so weak, basically it took forever to shower. overall you pay a lot of a room that should be a lot cheaper. one star.

    « Not a pleasant experience »

An old building with a new coat of paint and a poor selection of decor. No privacy, noisy, and no food available unless you enjoy greasy hamburgers with fries, of course. Expensive fees for parking on top of expensive room rent.

« Outrageously expensive for the quality »

I was shocked at the quality of stay this Best Western offered. The rooms are quite small, no air conditioning, terribly uncomfortable beds, very loud doors slamming inside courtyard, charged me $545 for 2 nights for 3 people this rate did not including parking. They couldn't even afford to print the "hotel information" sheet with color logo. It was ridiculous.

« Eclectic Design but Dirty Environment... »

Honestly, THE worst Best Western I've ever stayed in, and arguably one of the worst hotels overall in my 52 years on this planet. Pics look great, and the layout is somewhat funky; modern Chicano from the 70's desperately trying to hand on. Every nook-and-cranny had its decades of filth jammed into it, and the over-rated "Custom" Burger and "Custom" Lounge were quick to close their doors at night, even on the weekends, leaving their patrons both high, AND dry! Rooms were in ok shape, considering their age, but the staff did nothing to help make the stay better. Fair warning; they do NOT have air conditioning; they do NOT have microwaves OR mini-fridges in any of their rooms; and they do NOT care for your vehicle if you are fool enough to have one. They have a sign out for the public "Parking, $10/day" but for their patrons they charge $35/day, PLUS tax LOL. And, regardless of how clean your vehicle is when it enters, it will inevitably leave white, covered in pigeon poop from spare tire to steering wheel. Oh, and while they boast being a mere few blocks from all the happening downtown, you have to walk through, no matter which direction you go, 2 blocks of the outdoor campers where the area's poorest of homeless call home. Syringes on the sidewalk along with every other level of paraphernalia imaginable. The begging is beyond bothersome so badly that if you don't stop to politely tell them no they will curse and hound you for several blocks just to make a point. Don't bother to ask the front desk for help, they could care less, and if you complain too much, it can, and does, get worst.
