    « A Good Option Near SDSU »

Stayed 2 nights with my daughter and her best friend while on a visit to San Diego State. If there was a "Good" rating option between Average and Very Good, that's the rating I think it should get. We got a suite. Room was clean and service was good. Front desk was friendly and helpful. The parking lot is free and not secured, but because of the shape of the property, it felt pretty safe. We had no problems. As others here have noted, noise comes through the walls pretty easily. The breakfast area is small. While we were there, a couple with 5 kids took up 2 tables, and that was about half or the available space. There is an outdoor pool. There is no jacuzzi. All in all, this is a good option for a family on a budget visiting SDSU.

This was our first visit to California and we were impressed! Very clean rooms! Comfortable beds and pillows. Very friendly staff. Close to lots of destinations. We would highly recommend this hotel to everyone.

    « Average »

This was our last hotel stay on our family road trip from Northern California to San Diego. We stayed at various places along the way keeping our budget around the mid 100 range. This hotel was by far the most basic of our hotel stays and my wife felt it was a bit dirty...carpeting had some stains and the air condition vents appeared a bit dirty/dusty so we opted not to turn it on but rather opened the window for some fresh air. Overall the room was a good size, bed seemed clean and comfortable and decor/furniture a bit dated. Again comparing similar priced hotels in Carlsbad and Monterey (which was also a BW)...maybe San Diego is just a bit more pricey than the other locations.

    « Highly recommended »

Stayed here while visiting our daughter who is attending SDSU. Could not have chosen better! Rooms immaculate, beds so comfortable, facilities great. Loved the pool, breakfast and wonderful, helpful staff! Michelle on reception has looked after us so well, extremely helpful. Thank you so much, hope to return.

    « one night...great stay »

The desk clerk put me in an excellent room. Had a late reservation, but was put in excellent accommodations. The staff was MORE than helpful. Couldn't have been better. The room was quiet (near freeway) and xtra clean. The free breakfast was excellent.

« Dont ever stay here!! »

This hotel honestly has nothing good. Everything. I think is the worst hotel I've ever stayed in and I have stayed on dessertic wooded unprotected cabins. We were a party of 5 and we requested a non-smoking room. When I checked in I had to sign a non-smoking policy of 250 dollars and as soon as we entered the room the smell was loaded of it. We accepted it and open the sofa to find a cloud of dust in the air afterwards. Even the normal beds had dust on the sheets. The bathroom was not as expected in a branded hotel and the kitchen had a not working oven. In addition the carpet was so dirty that we were afraid of steping on it without shoes because of the steins on it. Juat to make it worst there was blood on the floor and spilled in one of the draws. We stayed there 3 nights and when we left the blood was still there. Finally the breakfast had only cold hard eggs which you cant warm up in the microwave because it's forbidden. Honestly this is not the service expected on a $185 dollars hotel

« Super clean and reasonably priced, but skip the breakfast »

This is a small motel, with a cramped parking lot and a tiny outdoor pool. My room was basic but very, very clean, with a reasonably comfortable bed and decent shower. There were a couple of suitcase stands, a desk, plenty of outlets, a good quality TV, enough hangers, and a pretty good coffee maker too. The lobby staff were outstanding and kind and I cannot say enough good things about them. Unfortunately the free breakfast should be given a complete miss. The breakfast room is far too small and has inadequate seating, and it reeks most mornings of unventilated smoke from the toaster. The oatmeal was essentially soup, and the bagels were very, very stale. The hard boiled eggs are small and overcooked. Just don't bother.

    « Great Spot! »

We stayed at Lamplighter for just over a week and found the rooms and amenities to be just exactly what we expected. The bonus of having a laundry onsite cannot be praised enough! Rooms were serviced every day and the free Breakfast was more than adequate. Being from Australia, I found access easy and distance to all the various 'sights' fairly close and definitely easy to get to. Traffic was medium in the area and we were able to get some 'sleep-ins' without an issue. Pool area looked great and Wi-Fi could be accessed throughout the site - even at the pool (Bonus!). Oh - and they have great couches and daybeds at the pool even if you dont want to swim (which we didn't, though the pool IS heated). I did manage to leave an item behind and when I called back a few days later, the staff had already set it aside for me, which was fantastic (thanks Michelle!).

    « Loved my stay! »

Hotel is worth the value. Very clean, great location, friendly staff. Clean room. Good continental breakfast. Jesse was great at accomplishing me to ensure my stay was pleasant. I would definitely recommend this hotel!

    « Friendly place »

I'm staying here for a week and I'm halfway thru my time here. The place is great and the people are accommodating especially Jesse, the front desk guy. It's a great location in San Diego. The place is clean and quiet.

    4
    « Very clean!! »

We stayed one night and we were very pleased. King mattress was very comfortable. There was a big selection for breakfast. I would stay here again if I was in the area!! Registration clerk Jesse was very nice!!

    5
    « Very pleased »

The exterior of the hotel is fine, a little run down but not bad by any means. I was pleasantly surprised with the room, cleanliness and comfort of the bed. I would stay here again. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Close to a lot of good food options walking distance. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

    5
« Great place for a quiet night not so far from downtown SD »

Staff was very helpful patient and attentive. Breakfast room was delightful clean and variety of snacks. Rooms were clean and spacious for two. Outside area was quiet and calm. There seemed to be some restaurants and bars around the area. If you're going sdsu its a great place to stay for parents.

« I agree with all the good reviews! »

I was so pleased to discover how right all the great reviews of this hotel were. I arrived with a suitcase and two large heavy boxes. I had requested a first floor room but was put on the second floor. No problem! Jesse, who checked me in, carried those two boxes up to my room himself. That was my first hint that the staff here would really go the extra mile. He could not have been more pleasant, helpful, or professional. The occasion of my stay was helping my daughter relocate to San Diego. My daughter and I spent a combined 9 nights here, in two different rooms. The first was a two-room suite with two queen beds in the bedroom. The second was the room my daughter moved into after I left, which had a single queen bed and a sleep sofa. Both had full kitchens. They were both clean and well-equipped, with comfortable beds. The one room studio was in a small separate building by the pool. All the rooms of that type (one queen bed, sofa bed, and full kitchen) are in that building. They are very private. (If the room description does not specifically say "sofa bed" then it is not in that building). When my daughter arrived she had two more large boxes, and she had three boxes shipped to the hotel. When it came time move rooms, this time it was Jose who helped will all those boxes. That is really going the extra mile. And Michele at the front desk allowed us to keep the first room until the second one was ready, which also made our lives easier. The grounds are beautifully landscaped. There is adequate parking at no charge. The oatmeal at breakfast was delicious. My daughter had her dog with us and that was not a problem at all. Although the charge is usually $15/night, if you book a long stay you can ask for a reduced rate.

    « Near SDSU »

My daughter and I stayed there New Year's Eve because we were checking out San Diego state university. It was a nice sized room. It was quiet. Free WiFi. Breakfast available but I never checked it out because I slept in. I would stay there again. It's near the freeway. Many places to eat and there's a Ralph's grocery store. There was ample parking. I was always able to park right near my room. I would have preferred more light in the room because I was trying to get work done.

« Good Choice for La Mesa/Lemon Grove area »

Very well maintained Southwest style hotel. Very clean, nice staff, good breakfast and I very easily navigated to La Mesa/Lemon Grove area. Also made it downtown in under 20 minutes using 94. Compared to other La Mesa hotels I've stayed at, this is my best choice and I will use again.

« Clean property in a great location at a great bargain. »

From the moment I hit the property I was impressed. This is a well-kept property, the grounds are like an upscale hotel. The front desk was very helpful and the cleaning staff super friendly and polite - all around great vibe! The front desk manager Jose was knowledgable, friendly and extremely helpful - they have a huge asset there.

« No frills, good value. »

Bare bones and simple. When you need a quiet, clean, inexpensive place with no frills, this is it. Thankfully they were kind enough to let us check in early. Ample parking even though they were full from some cheerleading event. Room was quiet and clean. Would have liked AC to be colder but that's more me. Water pressure from shower was good. Bed was comfy. About 5 minutes drive from SDSU.

    4
« Your best option for being close to SDSU »

We needed a place close to SDSU. This is a typical Best Western. Clean, reasonable, a decent breakfast where you can make your own waffle. A friendly and helpful staff. SDSU is about a 15 minute walk.

  • 5
« Nice experience, good sleep. »

Everything was good. No hot breakfast per se. There was waffles and oatmeal with toppings, cold boiled eggs, lots of pastries, bread, variety of bagels, cereal, yogurt, apples and oranges, cream cheese, juice, good coffee and tea.

    5
« Best hotel near SDSU »

I stayed here for 2 nights and had the greatest time. Every single thing about this hotel is wonderful, the rooms are spacious, the pool, the breakfast and of course the customer service. Jose is amazing. We were so lucky to be staying the nights he was working, I have never felt so welcome at a hotel before. He gave reccomdations to eat, the best place to get gas and the closest conveint store. If you want to stay at a place where you feel appreciated, this is it and make sure you ask for jose, he will not let you down.

    5
« Excellent stay! Will be returning. »

My husband and I stayed one night after a full day of fun in Sea World. Jose was the one who checked us in and honestly had the best customer service I have ever received at a hotel! He made us feel very welcome. The rooms were decent no complaints and the breakfast was actually really good I love all the options there was like oatmeal, waffles, different kinds of cereals , hard boiled eggs, bagels, bread, yogurt, fruit and some sweets. To drink they have milk, juice, tea (I believe) and coffee. If we stay in San Diego again will be sure to keep this place in mind! :)

    « A Very Good Value »

We visit San Diego often to see the grandkids, and for shorter trips always choose the BW Lamplighter. It is always kept very clean and the desk and housekeeping staff are all friendly and helpful. It is an older property but is well maintained and comfortable. Beautiful rose bushes and other plantings decorate an otherwise urban commercial setting. Several decent restaurants are within walking distance, including a good sushi place right next door. The SDSU campus is nearby, as are two groceries and a convenience store. The pool is clean, though not heated, with a nice sitting area. The complimentary breakfast is good and very convenient and includes self-made pancakes or waffles in addition to continental offerings. We recommend the BW Lamplighter to all those visiting the College Area of San Diego.

    5
« Great hotel for SDSU visit »

Hotel is not fancy on the outside but rooms are very comfortable, clean with high quality bedding. Great sushi restaurant right next door. If you are visiting SDSU you do not need a car. Good value for price.

    5
    « Lamplighter »

Excellent accommodations - clean and spacious. There seems to have been attention to detail paid in the room decor or amenities. Staff is also very professional and clearly hard working. I had a great experience.

    4
    « Great Staff-Central Location »

We just had a very nice stay at Best Western Lamplighter at SDSU over the Thanksgiving week. The San Diego weather was warm and clear which was well complimented by the tropical landscaping of the hotel grounds and pool area. The hotel staff was helpful when needed without hovering and the location of this hotel when visiting family in a variety of San Diego areas was excellent. We'll stay here again!

    5
« Excellent stay, close to SDSU »

We normally stay at the bigger hotels, but we needed to be closer to campus for a tour. We were delighted to with our stay. The room was a standard size, but very clean, comfortable and plenty of parking. The only thing I would say is to build/create a bigger space for breakfast. We were extremely cramped in the small room with several families. We had to split up sitting. But the food was good and hit the spot!

    5
« Nice Hotel Best Western San Diego »

Friendly staff, nice large room, quiet and comfy. Convenient to SDSU and freeways. Nice big TV and DVD player, not Blu-ray. Would have been nice to have scrambled eggs and bacon or sausage with breakfast. Waffles and pancakes were good.

    5
    « Love this hotel! »

My husband and I have been staying at this hotel whenever we visit our family in San Diego, and we love it. The rooms are super clean and very comfortable (we especially like the mini-suites for longer stays). The pool is sparkling. The grounds are very pretty. The breakfast has a good selection and when the breakfast room is crowded we enjoy eating by the pool. Every staff person is helpful and nice, especially the housekeeping staff -- special thanks to Maria for going the extra mile!

« Great staff! Great deal! »

The staff was very accommodating when we needed to make a change to the room at the last minute. The staff was very friendly and hard working to meet our needs. The hotel was very convenient for what we needed. The hotel was a very good bargain.

    4
    « Our stay »

We stayed here while visiting family. The hotel was very close to their house. The staff was very friendly, pool and landscape was beautifully maintained. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who just needs a place to sleep and have breakfast while exploring San Diego.. you can't beat the price!

    « Business trip »

« Best Western Lamplighter Inn at SDSU, San Diego, CA »

Clean, bright and quiet. Great staff - they mean to please! Have stayed at this location a number of times and each stay seems to get better. It is convenient to the University and has easy access to the city and airport. The breakfast offers a variety of foods for all tastes - waffles, eggs, yogurt, bagels, cereal, juice and coffee.. Check-in and check-out is a painless process. The motel is located close to a variety restaurants and food stores.

    « Excelent property »

My wife and I came down to visit for a birthday party. This was the first time we stayed at the motel. It was a great value and the staff friendly and very good at their jobs. Will be staying at this motel every time we visit our family in San Diego

    « Thank you ! »

Best Western has been very reliable for me in my travels. Always clean, always consistent, always appreciate you and your staff no matter what location I actually stay at. If I travel I look where the closest Best Western is and go from there. Keep up the good work. Go Dodgers.

« Would definitely recommend this hotel and stay here again!!! »

We were very impressed from the minute we got there to the day we left. (5 nights) The room was very spacious & clean, and we slept very well as it was so quiet. All the employees were super nice & helpful, especially Lisa in the breakfast room. She was restocking & cleaning the whole time we were there. The breakfast had a nice selection of items. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and you can easily walk to restaurants or drug stores. I would definitely stay here again!

    4
    « Our return visit »

This was the second time we have stayed at this BW location. We have enjoyed their service both times and will stay here again if we are in the area. The location is convenient to the family we visit in the area. It is also quite convenient to the freeway and to shopping areas.

« Great place to stay to visit SDSU student »

We came to visit our niece who is attending SDSU. She and her friends were so happy to have a home cooked meal in our little hotel kitchen! Loved the separate living room/bedroom areas. Close to SDSU!

    4
« Great for the price »

When you only pay $119 per night, you can't expect the Ritz. This place did its job, though, for my son's team staying here for a tournament. The beds were very comfortable, the rooms were clean, the staff was very friendly, and it had an old CA charm. Breakfasts were OK. For an inexpensive motel, I would recommend it.

    5
    « Close to SDSU »

I stayed here because it was half a mile from SDSU where I had an event the following day. Very clean, kind staff, and walking distance from many Rite Aid and food places. The pool was clean and the AC worked very well. I will stay here again!

    5
    « Wonderful »

Great place to stay. Wonderful staff and helpful with anything you need. Everyone went above and beyond to make my stay amazing. Would recommend this hotel to anyone going to be in the San Diego area. Was nice not to have to stress my hotel room on a very important weekend.

    5
« Great place to stay. »

Hotel was close tothe event we were attending. Very courteous hotel staff who provided everything we needed. Complimentary breakfast offered several choices and openedveru early! Good experience for my family.

    4
    « Nice! »

Older but well maintained hotel. I stayed in a king room with full kitchen which was very nice to have those amenities. Front desk staff was very pleasant. I arrived in the evening and front desk person recommended a Mexican restaurant within short walk and was very good. The hotel has a pool with towels laid out on the lounge chairs which I thought was a nice touch. Nice central location.

    5
    « Great Night's Sleep...Clean & Affordable »

The staff was professional and helpful. Rooms were clean and it was quite. Breakfast has a good variety of foods and the staff was attentive to cleaning and helping with questions. The check-in/check-out staff was professional as well. I would recommend this hotel as it is family friendly and in a good location from SDSU.

    4
« Clean rooms, great staff, great location! »

If you're looking for a great room at a great price and a great location I highly recommend the Best Western Lamplighter Inn. We has 2 comped nights courtesy of KSHP (Radio Shopping Show out of Las Vegas, NV) and had a really great stay. The front desk staff was very accommodating as they were able to check us in early well before the standard check in time and were also very helpful in suggestions for dining and activities to do while we were in San Diego. The property is extremely neat and tidy. The rooms themselves are very nicely equipped and very clean. The only complaint was there was no body wash in the shower compartments when arriving but that was quickly fixed once the front desk was made aware of this situation. Beds were fairly comfortable and the TV is a very nice size. The free breakfast in the morning was also a nice perk. Decent assortment to choose from to get your morning started. We will certainly keep the Best Western Lamplighter in mind if our journeys take us back to the San Diego area in the future.

    4
    « Family Vacation »

This hotel was a good value. The rooms were clean, the staff was helpful, and the parking was free. We used the pool, although we had to go to the front desk to get towels because they stop stocking them at a certain time in the evening. We used the laundry with no issues. The breakfast was pretty basic and the breakfast room was very small, but that is really our only complaint.

    5
    « Friendly place »

A very friendly staffed and conveniently located hotel. We are SDSU parents and enjoy the closeness to campus. Always welcoming staff and has everything needed. Very close to restaurants, bars and grocery stores.

« Lamplighter Inn and Suites, San Diego »

Have stayed at Lamplighter in the past and will stay at Lamplighter when in the area. Staff very helpful. Answered all questions and assisted us in plans for local attractions. All aspects of our stay there were good.

« Pleasant Place To Stay »

We were visiting my grandson in San Diego and chose the Best Western Lamplighter Inn & Suites for our stay. From check-in to check-out we had excellent service. The staff was very professional, polite and a delight to deal with. The room was clean, the beds were very comfortable, the grounds were pretty and the price was right in our range. It was less than one half hour to La Jolla and also to Coronado. We will definitely return on our next visit to the area.

« Very Pleasant and relaxing »

We spent 3 weekends there this past summer. It was a quiet and relaxing time. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The premises are well maintained and all requests were promptly handled. The last weekend, I had trouble accessing the WIFI. Within 5 minutes a staff person was in the room and helped me set it up.

    5
    « A perfect stay »

I definitely recommend this hotel. Had no problems and everyone is friendly. Katie was very attentive to our needs, very responsive, and provided great advice and recommendations. This was a great location. Good breakfast and free parking was an added plus. Check in and check out was fast. Great place to stay when in San Diego.

    4
« Relaxing atmosphere, nice pool, »

We had a nice 4 night stay, breakfast each morning was good, parking is a little difficult at times but the pool area is beautiful and the pool is very well maintained. All of the employees we came in contact with were friendly, polite and nicely groomed.

    5
    « Great place - Great value! »

My daughter attends SDSU and we always stay here when we visit. It is very convenient to the school and highways. The rooms are nice and clean - but the real draw here is the staff. Everyone at the front desk, housekeeping and breakfast area are always there with a smile and willing to help you out in any way they can. Of course you are going to find more upscale accommodations in the area - but if you just need a landing spot between day trips - this place gives you more bang for your buck!

    5
    « SDSU bound »

Everything was excellent! My only negative comment is the lack of mini frig. in our room. Wish we had had one. We will be staying there several times over the next 2 years as we were dropping my son off at San Diego State.

    5
« Visited beautiful San Diego »

Has everything in the room right next to pool and grill. Made for a great time while visiting my kids in San Diego will definitely recommend this place to people looking for a nice central place to stay while visiting.

    5
« Great stay, as always! »

My family has stayed at this hotel several times when bringing my son back to school at SDSU. The hotel grounds are clean and well kept. The staff is always happy and go out of their way to assist with any requests. Our room was clean and spacious. I would highly recommend this hotel when travelling to SDSU or the surrounding area.

« Quick night stay, but totally satisfied. »

The room is very spacious and very clean. The water pressure in the shower was perfect and never had any trouble getting hot water. There was a little kitchen, as well, with an oven, stove, microwave and full size refridgerator, dishes, pots and pans. Again, everything was sparkling clean. The location was perfect for moving our student into college at SDSU. I will definitely stay here again.

    4
    « Hotel stay »

We stayed at this hotel to help our son move into his apartment for the SDSU school year. The hotel staff was excellent. They went out of their way to help at every opportunity. The hotel while somewhat old was kept up well. Our room was quiet and clean. Parking was not an issue and the location was close to SDSU and convenient that way.

    5
    « Excellent stay »

The staff alone would earn Best Western Lamplighter an excellent review. They have always been warm, helpful, curtious, and professional. The grounds are clean and landscaped, I love the pool, it is a charming hotel in a very busy area. There are plenty of restaurants walking distance to grab a drink or a bite to eat. I feel safe as a woman traveling by myself. They have coffees and water in the lobby all day. The complementary breakfast is very good. I highly recommend this hotel.

    4
    « Comfortable and Quiet! »

Even though this is not your luxury hotel nor is it in a great part of the city, we were very happy with our stay! Very helpful staff and hardworking housekeepers! We were able to discover a lot of new places in SD we've never seen before! If you can choose, the upstairs rooms toward the rear of the property are the quietest!

    4
« Friendly and clean motel »

Just stayed here as a family of four. In hindsight I probably would have booked somewhere a bit more central in SD but that's my fault for not looking at the distances properly. The hotel is actually in a suburb called El Cajon. It was about a 20 to 25 minute drive to Downtown and 30 mins to La Jolla. Once there though, the staff were friendly, whilst our room was comfortable enough and very clean. A real highlight for us was the small but very nice pool area - perfect for relaxing after a day out and about. The breakfast buffet was also good, including make your own waffles and pancakes. There are also some very reasonable eating options in walking distance including Thai and Mexican.

    5
« Comfortable, Convenient to SDSU »

Went with my son to attend SDSU orientation, and to help my son get settled into his new living arrangements. Having this hotel as a base was relaxing and very convenient. Staff of the hotel was friendly and helpful. The area had several good restaurant choices.

The hotel was in an area that was average, I was extremely satisfied with the rate and comfort of the room. If in San Diego I would probably look at staying here. Just depends on my business in San Diego.

« Five Star Customer Service »

We originally booked Best Western Lamplighter Inn for 2 nights. For some very last minute reasons, we had to stay in San Diego for one more night and required an additional room. We were not able to keep the same room but they reserved similar rooms that we were looking for. They dropped some notes in the system, so someone can follow up on whether we can stay in the same room in case of cancellation. They even asked if we prefer the rooms on the ground floor since we have senior family staying at the third night. I really appreciate their good communication. The front desk staff are very helpful, courtesy and easy to talk to. Their breakfast area is small, so we just grabbed our food and ate in our room which is not an issue at all. Housekeeping has done a great job. We had no problem finding parking space at 10pm as the hotel may not be fully booked at the time of our stay. Their top notch customer service is the reason for us to stay at BW Lamplighter again next time.

« Placed Saved my visit »

I booked here in a pinch from booking a hotel that was hideously outdated and dirty. I needed a 2 queen bed but all they had available was a family suite. The family suite was just 60 more per night than the other hideous hotel I had booked and it was 20 times nicer!! Having the full CLEAN kitchen with complete dishes fridge microwaye clean CLEAN comfortable beds and fam room was SO worth the price! Grocery store was walking distance so I made up the 60$ difference in what I saved in food for 2 days and nights of otherwise going out. $50 in groceries went a long way! Highly recommended.

« Just a great place to stay »

A group of us rented two rooms for a Saturday night. We were given queen suites, with a full kitchen. The facility was clean. I didn't see any need for any repairs in either room, with the exception of one electrical outlet that didn't grip a plug very securely. There were plenty of extra pillows, with is a big thing with me, as I always want more than one under my head. There are several dining facilities within walking distance, and a number of others within a short drive. The room description included a continental breakfast, which can mean very basic to somewhat more elaborate. This motel rated among the latter. Besides the usual cereal and Danish, there were fresh waffles, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, etc. As others have noted, the motel is on a busy street, but the road noise wasn't any worse than most other places. We had rooms very near the road. Had we gotten ones further away, I'm doubtful we would have heard much. The only fault I could find - and it is a really picky one - is that the TV didn't swivel far enough to be seen well from the bed. I call it a success if that is my biggest complaint.

    « Great Customer Service »

We stay frequently for our daughter who is at SDSU. It is our go to place for location, value and customer service. Parking can be tricky when they are booked up solid but so far we have not had major issue. We always book the King Jr Suite and find that it more than meets our needs. The cost value makes it possible for us to come and stay more often.

Our very short stay at the Lamplighter was pleasant. We checked in at midnight and left at 6:00 am. Our room was clean and pleasant. The front desk clerk graciously let us in the breakfast room early to get breakfast items for the road. I would recommend this hotel to others.

    « Cockroaches »

This obviously is a vey basic hotel. I had a quick trip to SDSU so decided to give this hotel a try. From a location/price point and very short stay (8 1/2hrs) I really didn't consider anything else. Unfortunately there was a cockroach in the room. Didn't see it until almost morning. When I brought it up to front desk they minimized the entire situation telling me it was a water bug. I'm not sure why she didn't believe me, because it was certainly a cockroach, and no one ever came to check. Once that happened I left the hotel immediately. I chose not to eat, or use any of the amenities in the room. Would definitely not stay here ever again.

Nice, clean hotel. The staff is very honest, they called me to tell me I had forgotten my hat in my room . No other hotel has ever done that. The pool was very nice, the location is great. Thank you again Dru

    « Very nice! »

This hotel is on a busy street, but is quiet. Within walking distance to many restaurants and a grocery store so it is in a very convenient location. Room was very nice and the wi-fi worked well. The orange juice was a little watery, but that is my only complaint.

    5
« Great place to stay »

The room was super clean, pool area is nice with a BBQ, free wi-fi, staff is super friendly, free breakfast is a nice touch. Basic room with two queens, but for a simple stay, nice place to stay I would definitely stay here again..

« Great Place to Stay »

The pricepoint, cleanliness, friendly staff and breakfast make this hotel my favorite in San Diego. My 8th visit to this hotel. This hotel is central to everywhere and freeway close. Free breakfast, great swimming pool and washer-dryer on premises.

« Used to be Great, now it SUCKS »

This place used to be a little bit of heaven, to stay at this hotel while in San Diego, but now, greed and laziness have made this hotel a NON DESTINATION! If you love dirty carpets...if you love cockroaches (UGH!) then try it. If you want to be disrespected, come on down! Otherwise, avoid this property!

    3
    « Average Hotel »

The picture of the hotel on the internet looks a lot better than the actual hotel. The hotel is a little out of the way for going to Sea World or downtown San Diego. The pool was small, but not crowded. The grand kids enjoyed it. The breakfast was O.K. The DVD player didn't work and the Hotel staff was unable to fix or replace it during our stay.

    « Business »

The hotel is suppose to be a non-smoking hotel. I had to walk by a couple smoking just outside my room after checking in. I had a meeting, so I put my luggage in the room and left. I got back late & very tired. When I walked by the room next to mine the guests had their door & window open. They were playing cards and smoking. After getting in my room, I found that it also had a very strong urine smell. The hotel did not have another room & said I could change the next day after someone checked out & the room was cleaned. This was unacceptable because I had to leave early for an event I was working and would not be back until late. I called at midnight and found another hotel. I stayed the night & checked out the next morning, went directly to the other hotel (this room was so clean, quiet and fresh smelling) and checked in. The Lamplighter gave me a small discount for the terrible night I had to spend. By the way, due to the cigarette smoke and urine smell, I had the worst headache, not the best thing for working an event. Will never stay there again or recommend this hotel to anyone.

    « Good experience! »

After reading the other favorable reviews we decided to stay at this hotel. We had orientation at San Diego State and wanted to be close by as we had an early arrival time at school the next morning. The hotel is about 3-5 minute drive by car from SDSU. The room was clean and everything was in working order (including the internet)! The (complimentary) breakfast area is small but big enough to get your food comfortably and either bring it back to the room, eat at the tables by the pool or eat there (the room seats about 10 people). This is an older Best Western where you park right outside the room. If you're looking for the Ritz, don't stay here. But if you want a comfortable hotel room that is convenient and reasonably priced with no extra fees for parking, this is the place for you. The staff was very accommodating. We didn't use the pool so I don't have a review for that.

« Clean, quiet, and comfy beds! »

This is one of the nicest Best Westerns I have stayed at and a good value. It is conveniently located in San Diego yet very quiet at night. The rooms were very clean with extremely comfortable beds and pillows. The hotel has a nice, well maintained pool, a good complimentary breakfast and very helpful and courteous employees. The woman at the front desk checked me in quickly and printed me out directions to where I needed to go the next morning for an early swim meet at the Kroc Center. Express check-out was great. I will stay here again!

« Love Best Western Hotels »

This place was awesome. It was about 20 min from the beaches but in a decent area. Staff was friendly, breakfast great with lots of choices. I was concerned that we would be too far from the actual city but there is plenty to do around there. Great little sushi restaurant next door.

« Nice Staff, Room Shabby and Not a good Value »

Broken hairdryer, air conditioner barely working on a sweltering day. Dirty carpet and Old shabby towels. The bed was very uncomfortable as well as the pillows. Friendly helpful staff and good breakfast. This hotel desperately needs updating!

« Great place near SDSU »

This is very convenient to San Diego State University, and within walking distance and quick driving distance to a wide selection of restaurants and bars. Plus, they offer a decent free breakfast and wifi.

    4
    « Good older hotel »

Comfortable room, very clean. It was convenient to where we wanted to go. Appreciated having a mini-fridge to use. Breakfast was most adequate; breakfast room could have had more seating though. Would probably stay here again if I were in the area.

« GREAT HOTEL for our purposes »

Located very near San Diego and other cities. Clean rooms. Breakfast offered every day. Excellent service from front desk and all personnel. Easy access from Hwy's. WI-FI service. No parking fees. Swimming pool.

    « nice surprise »

I stayed in a family suite over the 4th of July weekend to visit family in area. I have to say that my mom and I were pleasantly surprised. The unit was roomy and comfortable. Sheets and towels were clean, and the kitchen had the utensils we needed. There was a surprisingly big pool for a small motel. There were plenty of chairs and shade from the bright sun. As I visit San Diego often, I will definitely return.

    « Family weekend trip »

This hotel served our purpose and was in the price range we wanted for this quick weekend trip. It is further out from the beaches, but is only about 15 minutes away near San Diego State. This is an older hotel with very limited parking which wasn't problematic when coming back late. Our bed was comfortable and the bathroom area was nice, but the room smelled musty and there were large stains on the carpet. Could've used some work. The staff was great and accommodating.

    « BW Lamplighter »

I found the hotel very nice for a great price. Staff was friendly and helpful. Loved both the frig and microwave in the room. Everything was nice and clean. The hotel was very quiet when we stayed. The pool area was great for having breakfast and wasn't visable from the street.

« Worked out for area wedding »

There were some kinks that we were able to work around (area power outage and no hot water next morning). Questionable transaction/adjustments on (emailed) statements (multiple received), but need to review further since only been few days and waiting for all to finalize. Staff was very friendly, accommodating to request for family members w/limited mobility. Parking a little tight, but because some guests took up more space. Breakfast choices were decent. Comfy room, drapes a little worn, fresh towels from housekeeping. Pool looked nice, but didn't get a chance to use. Close to lots of things, but particularly well priced and close to where we were attending a wedding. Would stay again!

    « Great staff! »

« Best Western Lamplighter Inn & Suites »

Overall, a good stay. Nothing to nitpick, just a quality location with good staff. I would definitely get a room at this property again if I were on vacation or in the area on business, as I was for this stay. I'm out on the road plenty during the year and this location was definitely tough to find quality on my travel budget allowance but this Best Western did the job nicely.

« Wonderfully accommodating! Just what you want for a business overnight stay! »

« great place to stay reasonably »

This is a very nice small older family hotel. It is clean and comfortable. Everything works well in the room, there are plenty of plug ins for devices and the beds are very comfortable. There are no microwaves or refrig in the room but coffee and tea are at the front desk all the time. The breakfast bar is good quality food but does not have hot eggs or meat.

    « Going to SDSU »

Great hotel with good location near university , stayed for 22 days and was very happy . Only one day electricity was cut for all area , hotel owner offered another room at another hotel but we did not use. Reception staff very helpful. Only we went fora two day trip within our stay and asked to chk out and in again but they refused and insisted to continue the initial reservation. Nice pool with an area for barbecue.

« Better than you would expect. »

I stayed at the hotel for ten days in early March. The room was a little dated, but It was clean, inexpensive, centrally located (literally just a couple of miles from SDSU) and within a few minutes drive to many of the tourist sites. They served a great continental breakfast, which helped stretch our budget to do other things during our trip. Our room had a full kitchen which we meant to use, but never did. There is a Ralph's supermarket a few blocks away, as well as a few restaurants within walking distance, and a Burger King and Popeye's chicken a few blocks away. If you're on a budget, this is a great choice if you're in San Diego.

    5
    « Great experience »

We stayed at this location as it was near family and conveniently located near a number of restaurants and was a reasonable drive to the beach and other must see locations in San Diego. It was clean, well maintained, and the staff was friendly and helpful. We'd recommend this location to others.

    « an inn with a comfortable, at-home feel »

A beautiful Spanish-style inn with lots of colorful flowers. Fabulous continental breakfast. I chose a room with a microwave and a refrigerator, which are nice to have when you are staying multiple nights. This is the this time I stayed at this inn and I love the place.

    « Everything We Needed »

« No hassle check inn and friendly front desk »

Great location with easy access to SDSU. Comfortable rooms with several places to eat within walking distance of hotel. Has on site laundry you can access 24 hours a day. Been to many motels in the area at the same price range for business and I have to say the Best Western Lamplighter Inn near SDSU is in my opinion one of the best. I was absolutely thrilled with my stay. I am a guest who values cleanliness and my room was the cleanest I have seen. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable. The breakfast was perfect. Thank you for a lovely first visit to San Diego!!!

« Overall a great hotel, especially for the prices »

Stayed here with family while on vacation, the location is pretty good as far as driving distance to all of the attractions - but nothing that great in walking distance. The staff was very friendly and personable, and addressed any issues we had quickly and fairly. Rooms were clean and had all the amenities we needed - noise sometimes was an issue, but usually a phone call to the front desk cleared that up. Also could hear people above us a couple of nights. Breakfast room was tiny - they said is is in process of being expanded - so that is good - but expect that you may have to bring food out to near the pool or back to your room on some mornings.

« My favorite hotel in San Diego »

The rooms are clean and comfortable and the staff is great. Many years ago we chose this hotel because of the location, now we stay a week every year because it is reliably good and convenient to our family events. The pool is heated and clean and the breakfast room is nice with a variety of choices. And - the other guests we meet at breakfast or at the pool are also happy and friendly and enjoying themselves. We look forward to staying again next year.

This hotel is one of the cleanest hotels I have been to. The location is not desirable but the service you get is great and they have a nice a continental breakfast. We have stayed at this hotel many times over the years when visiting family and it's always excellent: clean, comfortable, attractive, with cheerful and helpful staff. The heated pool is a real plus. Although the breakfast room is a bit crowded, the quality is good and the staff encourages people to eat by the pretty pool. Internet is fast. We'll be back!

    « Good Value »

Very friendly staff. We wanted a location close to Old Town so we only stayed one night. The hotel was older but clean and in good repair. Bed and pillows were comfortable. Their breakfast was excellent. Very good value.

« Bed great. Breakfast, location, and parking not so great »

Drove down from LA to go to SD State open house the next morning. Good news bed and pillows were just fine. Staff were very friendly. Free movie rental (DVDS) Not so great news: Room dated. Limited choice of breakfast items (but good coffee!) Sketchy area- would not recommend to families with young children and would not recommend to take a nighttime walk in. Pool was OK but not heated. Only 2 stories. No elevator. Thin ceilings. Worse: This is a very narrow property and parking is TIGHT,especially when hotel is full. But the staff were great and we did get a good night sleep and one good cup of coffee. So take the good with the not so good.

« My best discription of this hotel is average. »

The room was ok. If we were staying more than 4 nights. I would not stay here. The Bed was good. The walls were thin, and there was a lot of noise. There was not a good selection of TV channels. The breakfast room was tiny. I have never seen such a small breakfast room. It was hard to get to the buffet because it was soooo crowded.(No place to sit or stand. We had breakfast only once in the 4 days we stayed. On the positive side the staff was nice and there was always free parking, I probably would not stay at this location again.

« Good quiet stay at this clean/affordable property »

Recently had another good stay at the Lamplighter. Gilda at the front desk was very helpful. The property is not in the best area of town but there is a sports bar across the street and a good taco shop on the same block. A good alternative choice to hotel circle and close to SDSU. I will return to the Lamplighter in the future

    « Weekend Getaway »

I'm always leery when trying a "new" hotel that is an older property. But I checked all the reviews on here and decided to give the Lamplighter Inn a try. I can say I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It was clean, quite and would definitely stay here again. The hotel is located close to SDSU, but we were actually there to see the city and go to Sea World. The hotels location actually was not that bad, about 20 minutes to all the major areas of San Diego. It was easy to get around and we didn't mind the drive. The continental breakfast the hotel offer was substantial and offered various options. The breakfast room was small, but everything was clean and well stocked. The only issue we had, and why I didn't give 5 stars, was with the WiFi. We had issues trying to connect and were never able too. Our room was located towards the back of the property, so I'm not sure if that was the issue or not. But that was the only issue. We with definitely be adding this hotel to our list of San Diego hotels, for return trips!

    5
« So close to San Diego State Campus »

I love the closeness to the campus so it makes visiting our student easy! We will continue to stay here while our child is a student at San Diego State and will suggest the location to others visiting their student as well.

    « Very comfortable stay »

We only stayed here one night but we enjoyed our stay. Very clean and comfortable. Nothing to possibly complain about. I didn't use the internet, so I can't speak for it. I was pleasantly surprised over this hotel's economizing ways to stay green, such as the shampoo and body wash dispensers in the shower. A decent complimentary breakfast and very nice staff! When we're in San Diego we'll try to stay here again!

« Quiet Clean Free Breakfast Awesome Staff Great Pool »

What makes me most happy about this hotel is how quiet it is. This was our second long term stay here in a Family Suite unit with our two young children. Our suite had a closed off bedroom and nice living room with kitchenette- stocked with everything you need for cooking. Nice size refrigerator/freezer too! We live close by and were having work down at our home both times, so this was very convenient for us. The staff is awesome, from our check in with Michelle, to our check out with Gilda. Gilda really went above and beyond and treated us like old friends! By the way, the included breakfast is awesome too, with tons of options for us and the kids. And housekeeping kept our unit in tip top shape and had a great schedule. Thanks again Gilda, and your whole team for giving us another pleasant stay!!!

    « Less then helpful »

1st off the stay was good no concerns , clean and had most of what anyone might need. Had to book the stay using a 3 rd party as it was for a Hockey tournament . I had asked for Friday and Saturday night knowing we would drive in for the games on Friday morning. I did get a confirmation sent but just put into my e mail file labeled Hockey. On Sunday as we were checking out I find I have an additional charge for Thursday on my bill. The counter tells me to contact the Group sales . I contact the Group sales and was treated as if they could really care less about my issue and send me to the 3rd party who then puts it back on the hotel. So we get the run around . The 3rd party contacts the hotel Group sales Manager who I had spoke to and they decline to take care of the Thursday night stay. Big surprise we should have known big business over the customer is the way of the times. In the future we will verify our reservations and will always pick a hotel chain that treats the customers with respect and act as if they care.

We had a very nice time with the rental of 6 rooms for this event. The hotel was very comfortable, easy access to UCSD, and surrounding restaurants and freeways. Breakfast was convenient and rooms comfortable.

    « Great experience here! »

We are so glad we booked here. The room prices are reasonable and affordable. We got the suite which included a little living room space, kitchen, and separate room for bedroom. The bathroom was great size as well. The kitchen had everything from plates to utensils to cups and a small coffee maker and toaster. It had a microwave, oven and stove. Also a full size fridge! The room was overall nice. It was clean and didn't have any funny smells. The room could get hot so when we were there we kept the AC on at times. With it on, it was nice and fresh. The only thing that could be improved are the pillows. Maybe we have sensitive necks but the pillows were a bit too firm for our liking so it was hard to sleep on them. Next time bringing our own pillows may be a better option. The fact that breakfast was included each day was a huge plus. Staff was very friendly and on our last night we even checked out a movie from the front desk to have a chill movie night before hitting the road the next day. I would definitely stay here again. No complaints.

« Great motel for value »

This motel is located near San Diego State, not in the center of San Diego. It is located very close to Highway 8 which crosses from West to East and connects with all other freeways in the city. It is therefore cheaper than more central hotels. However, the quality of the motel is great. All staff are very helpful and friendly. We have stayed here before and will again.

Great mid sized hotel conveniently located for our activities, walkable to a handful of good restaurants, stores. Very friendly staff, very helpful. Great value for me and my family. Very nice clean pool. Good breakfast.

    « Terrific People - Terrific People »

Excellent staff. Housekeeping (Espe) outstanding. Pride in doing a good job shows. GM Len at check-in and Gilda at check-out treated us as old friends. Our 3rd stay at this property and once again happy with our experience.

    « Clean »

Staff was great. Rooms are very clean. Breakfast is mostly carbs but hard boiled eggs and yogurt are available. Down side is the breakfast area is very small and people were lingering long after eating so table space was a hot commodity. The pizza takeout menu came I handy and I wish I'd have written down the name of it because their pizza was great!

« A great place to stay in the SDSC area. »

Clean, comfortable, good breakfast, beautiful grounds and the hotel staff are professional. I always stay at this Best Western Hotel when I'm in the area on business. The rooms are clean and quiet and the beds are very comfortable. The landscape is exceptional with beautiful roses and green lawns. I see the same gardeners year after year.

« Excellent stay, small, well kept and very enjoyable »

Had never been to San Diego and after checking out the various hotels and locations on the internet came up with this hotel. We like smaller hotels and this one was perfect for us. Two storey complex, we stayed on top floor with a small kitchen. Older complex but everything clean, well maintained both inside and outside. The pool area was great. Location was very good for getting around with a rental car. Area was safe. The free breakfast provided had a great selection of food so that you could have plenty of options. We stayed a week and would certainly recommend it and we would also stay again. All hotel staff were very courteous and helpful.

« Best Western Lamplighter Inn, SDSU »

Our experience was exceptional. The staff from reservations, check-in and maid service can be matched but not exceeded in quality of service. We had a king-sized bedroom with seating area, which was very comfortable, and at a price that was a great old American value.

This site is well maintained and very comfortable. The staff is pleasant and helpful. We always stay at this location when visiting our daughter at SDSU. It is close to the campus and all of the good stuff in San Diego. It is great motel for the price.

« The name of the hotel is apt - "BEST WESTERN..... " »

The BEST experience in customer service, room comfort and location. The hotel is in the best location, very calm location with easy access to many shops, pharmacies and malls. Staff here are extremely courteous, approachable and make you feel comfortable. The room size and options are very convenient for families. We stayed here with family and had opted for a room with kitchen since we stayed for 3 weeks. Kitchen had all the necessary utensils so we had to only stock the fridge with groceries. Had the best experience ever.

    « Lamplighter Inn - BW »

Most of the Best Western hotels I've stayed in never fail to deliver a fine night's stay. When I travel I like to get out and experience a city, etc. Best Western is the best basic, clean, quiet, and affordable hotel that offers all the amenities necessary for a simple stay. I personally do not need luxurities. I just need a clean, quiet place to lay my head after a fun day out exploring while on vacation. BW does a fine job offering this. and breakfast is always very nice and appreciated. This includes the Lamplighter Inn!

« Arrived as last minute, staff very cordial in taking care of us because of later arrival »

Experienced excellent service from all members of the staff that we came in contact with. Room very clean, nice size, comfortable beds and had the features that we like, tv, microwave, refrigerator, and ac. Excellent continental breakfast with great choices.

    « Family Fun Stay »

Great Hotel and location. This hotel was great no problems that I noticed what so ever. Never had problems getting parking, kids loved the pool and breakfast. The rooms were clean and spacious. We had a group stay with 3 rooms and they were close together and each group had a great time. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

    « nice motel »

Very nice motel at the edge of the boulevard. Friendly staff. We had a nice and big room with a beautiful bathroom. The breakfast is available to the host. The room is a bit small, but you can take to prevail. We have taken the outdoor pool which is fine. There is a place for grilling. Parking available. Attention if you come home late, there is not enough room. Washing machine and dryer available. Very well.

    5
    « Excellent as Always! »

Rooms and facilities are always neat and clean. The staff here is very friendly and always willing to give you a hand. This hotel is barely a mile away from the SDSU campus and is our preferred place to stay when visiting.

« Nice Oasis Near SDSU »

In general this is a very nice hotel with clean comfortable rooms and a nice pool area in a fairly safe location. The only downside I would say is that they did not have a restroom near the breakfast area. This is very important when traveling with a family because sometimes you leave people sleeping to go get breakfast and when you cannot use the restroom anywhere you have to go back to the room and wake everyone up.

    2
« Room smelled, carpet was MOIST.. »

I didn't expect much for the price, I know budget hotels aren't gonna be luxurious but as soon as we entered the room we felt the heavy, wet, old carpet odor. It was difficult to be there long, and impossible to eat anything in there. If it wasn't for that, it would have been ok. The pool and spa are ok. Not overcrowded when we went. Breakfast is basic.

« Weekend stay for an event in town »

This location was more economical than the Hotel Circle option our event was at. It's an older property, but well-maintained. The staff is friendly, the room was clean, with decent breakfast options. Out room had one bed with a kitchen. I loved having this! They provide pans, dishes, bowls, serve ware, and a few kitchen tools. This made it more like a home away from home! After check in, I discovered we forgot to pack a toothbrush and razor. The front desk provided them! When I asked the price, they said no charge. Not sure if this is common; never has happened to me before, but it was convenient and nice that they were able to assist. The pricing of this location was extremely competitive, so I give them a full rating for providing everything I needed to make my weekend enjoyable at an affordable price.

The hotel was quiet, the pool was clean, the rooms were immaculate and the front desk was funny and extremely helpful! My son got to watch his team (Chargers) and then eat dinner at the pool after swimming! My son said this was the best trip of his life. Thank you Lamplighter you guys rock! Try the Angry Birds bar and Grill across the street it was amazing!

    « Enjoyed My Stay »

I stayed three nights and thought the staff went out of their way to anticipate my needs and make my stay comfortable. Not being familiar with San Diego, I appreciated the easy access to I-8 and the convenient location. Most importantly I felt safe, both in the motel and the surrounding area. Motel is two stories but I heard no noise from other rooms or outside and found my room quiet. I am an early riser and enjoyed getting my continental breakfast and free USA Today each morning and going out by the outdoor pool to sit. The area is nicely landscaped with lots of flowers and shrubs. The room was exceptionally clean and alrhough on the small side had everything I needed. I would definitely stay here again.

    4
    « Very Clean »

Very Clean, no bugs and comfortable beds. Smaller than we're used to staying in but well worth the money to stay here. Lots of eating places close by. Rented 3 Red Box movies and used the room's dvd player.

« Nice small hotel with tight parking »

It's a nice Best Western hotel with good staff. Rooms are clean and the AC work well. There are a few things that take away a point: the parking is tight even with our family minivan. We got unexpected wake up call from some body car alarm goes off in the middle of the night right outside our room! and one night from the shampoo dispenser in the bath room came off the wall and crashed in the bath tub. It would be nice if they install a room safe and a small refrigerator.

« Our second time here and, overall, a good stay »

We decided to stay here again, two years after our first stay. The staff continues to be friendly and helpful and the price is reasonable. My only suggestion, which I offered to the front desk, is that whoever washes the towels should wear a hair net.....I discovered a clump of long hair, surprisingly, when I started to use a fresh towel after a bath. Otherwise, they still offer a nice breakfast and a good value for the stay.

    « very disappointed »

First off, we booked a room for 6 people, which included a separate living room with pull out sofa, and a kitchenette, but what we got was a room for 4 people, when I questioned it, they told me all rooms were booked but they would give me a roll away free of charge. Well, the roll away came from a dingy storage room and it took up any walking room we had in our room. If anyone needed to go to the bathroom we had to climb over the other beds, this went on for 2 night, caused they were booked both nights, then when I asked if we could have a late check out due to our lack of room, they gave me a 1/2 hour, how insulting. And the picture on the website did not match the picture of the hotel or room. Extremely dissapointed....

    « Good value »

Stayed for three nights. Typical mid range motel, with friendly staff, decent free breakfast. Market price was reasonable. Two queen beds, with good A/C. Not a resort but a good room for overnight. Provided direction to major sites. About 20 minutes to zoo and Seaworld. Discount coupons on rack saved us a lot.

« Clean and comfortable close to SDSU »

Picked this hotel because it was south of SDSU which is crazy on move in day. Thought we could avoid backed up traffice coming from the other direction...looks like it will work. Clean and comfortable room

    « I've had better with BW »

Overpriced (ComicCon weekend. We weren't there for ComicCon). Bug in raisins. Lumpy, hard bed. Soft, rotting oranges at breakfast. I've had way better at BW in Nevada and will stay with them again. Just not in San Diego.

« Great place to stay in San Diego »

Minutes from downtown San Diego, the Lamplighter Inn is a fantastic place to be. They treat you well, they are always upgrading AND maintaining what they have to offer. The best part of the place is that friendly feeling (safe and comfortable) that is so rare these days. The staff go out of their way to provide an inviting stay that makes you want to come back! If you are planning a trip to San Diego, you MUST stay here!

    4
    « Cozy & Quiet »

This placed offered a cozy and quiet place for my family and I to enjoy. The room was clean and amenities were appropriate. The hotel was conveniently located close to SDSU, which was perfect. I would have liked to see more food and entertainment options closer to the hotel. Parking was a bit of a challenge.

    4
« Small but comfy suite. »

We booked the family suite as it was cheaper than two individual rooms for our boys and my wife and I. We just used the large frig and microwave as my wife had no desire to cook on vacation. (It was only one night anyway) My kids aren't used to sharing a bed, but they managed. My oldest enjoyed the pool as well. The staff was attentive whenever we needed something. I always shop for the price/options wherever we go, and I will put this hotel my list of future stay at possibilities in San Diego.

Very Nice Staff! Good Breakfast, Room Equipped with large bed, micro, table, Full kitchen with stove/sink, refrigerator, powder area and bathroom! Quiet area, good AC, close to Freeway, only 15 to 25 min drive to various San Diego Attractions, close to Supermarket, gas station , etc. Only con is tight parking spaces.

« This is a MOTEL and it is loud, friendly staff »

I guess with the name "Inn & Suites" and the good reviews, I expected something nicer than this standard motel. The office staff was super friendly and the room was clean. We only stayed one night. We could hear conversations of the neighbors next door. Our ground floor room was so loud in the morning with people loading their cars and "honking" every time they locked their car (started at 6:30 am). The hotel cannot control that, but really unfortunate. Maybe the second floor is better. It's a MOTEL with cars right outside your door. The breakfast was simple with waffles, bagels/breads, cereal, yogurt, and hard boiled eggs. Not much seating inside the breakfast room.

« Great hotel, exemplary customer service »

We stayed the week of July 4th, while our kids were at Sea World Camp. We had a Queen Studio with a sleeper sofa. We took to calling it our "flat." I had a lot of time to notice any issues with the property, having worked in high school as a hotel maid, and later life as an Executive Assistant to a resort property manager, I know the business well. Here are things you'll want to know: Service: These people bend over backward to accommodate you, from the moment we arrived, to breakfast, to housekeeping, everyone was pleasant, professional and knew their role in creating a positive experience for all their guests. They have free movies at the front desk for you to check out. Cleanliness: Yes the property is older, but in our studio room, I could not find a spider web, or a bit of dust. The carpets are nice and cushy and clean, the tile well maintained, the showers spotless, and all furniture and appliances were in great working condition. Linens: the sheets were soft, the pillows weren't too fluffy, or flat and the blankets were perfect weight for keeping the room just on the cool side to sleep well. The one thing I was truly surprised at was the condition of their towels. For the price and age of the property, I expected flat, dull, worn towels. These towels were bright white, fluffy, and absorbent. Kitchen set up: The kitchen has a full-size refrigerator/freezer and stove, a microwave, a toaster and a 4 cup coffeemaker. It comes with a full set of pans (skillet, large, medium and small sauce pans and lids. It also has a full compliment of cooking utensils, eating utensils (even an ice cream scoop), and plastic tumblers (16 oz) coffee cups, saucers, bread plates, dinner plates and large cereal bowls for four. There were two serrated edge paring knives and two butter knives, but four forks and spoons. A dish drainer, dish soap and an washing sponge, along with dish cloth and dish towel were also provided. Environment: our room was near the street and in front of the pool, but we never had an issue with noise from either. There is a reasonable laundry room on site, and a computer should you need to access a printer while there. Wifi is free with a user name and password. Nearby: There are two supermarkets (Ralphs and Vons) nearby, along with a plethora of restaurants, a huge Starbucks, Burger King, Chipotle, Subway, Smashburger, and some interesting ethnic restaurants as well. It was at most a 15 minute drive to all the fun locations like Sea World, the USS Midway, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. This hotel just became our base of operations for all our San Diego trips (3 times a year). I highly recommend it for the business or family traveler.

« Decent motel, nice surrounding area »

We stayed here for a couple nights dropping off my daughter at SDSU's dorms. The place is quiet, the rooms are plain but clean, the breakfast is simple but it's a meal. If a safe quiet room close to the university is what you desire, this place is fine for a couple nights. Staff is polite and helpful.

« Great Stay for a Work Week Trip »

I traveled to San Diego to conduct business in the City Heights neighborhood the week of July 4th. The Lamplighter is conveniently located on El Cajon Blvd. near San Diego State University and many of the agencies I was visiting during my trip. The room was very clean and included a kitchenette, which was wonderful. The kitchenette was stocked with pots, pans, towels, and a dish-drying rack, along with some dishes. The bed was comfortable. The refrigerator and air-conditioner were rather loud at night, and I ended up turning off the air-conditioner because of the noise. The water pressure was good. The Lamplighter does not provide an abundance of soaps or shampoos, so be sure to pack your own! The grounds are very beautiful and the groundskeepers and hospitality staff were kind and professional. There are many gorgeous roses around the pool and parking lot. Overall, this was a nice place to stay for a work trip and offered some of the comforts of home.

    4
« Clean, convenient, with cozy parking »

We had booked only a room, but got one with a complete, small kitchen--full-sized frig, stove, microwave, sink, full supply of eating and cooking utensils. We were traveling with another family, and their room did not have even a frig. The rooms were clean, and the whole site had beautiful flowers. Parking was tight, not enough for all vehicles and a bit exciting to back up a minivan. Breakfast was very good with a range of choices from pancake waffles, oatmeal, fresh fruit, and more. The motel is on a one-way, busy street.

    4
    « Nice and Convenient »

Stayed one night to attend a private function nearby. Very quick and easy check in; the room was very clean if a little small for a suite. Very convenient parking. Only issue (resolved by phone a day later) was that I was overcharged for the room rate I received by booking online. I didn't check my receipt until I got home and found I had been charged the full rate. The management confirmed my lower, guaranteed rate and made a prompt refund to my credit card.

« Nice Hotel and Friendly Staff »

A the last minute we decided to stay a night on our vacation so we quickly checked hotels in the San Diego area on Trip Advisor. We chose Best Western Lamplighter because of their price and previous reviews. We were very pleased with the conditions of the hotel and their all their staff that we interacted with were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good and had a variety of items offered. The room was clean and the only issue we experienced was the sound coming from the other room above us and next to us. It is obvious that Best Western needs to sound proof their rooms as we could hear the person in the room next to us snoring and the person above us urinating into the toilet. You should not be able to hear these types of noises coming from other rooms, I could understand if someone had the sound on their tv extremely loud or they were shouting, but snoring and urinating are not noises that should be heard. It is a shame because this really is a good hotel and they're doing everything right except for that issue, which is a pretty big issue! Hopefully they will address it. If they did fix this issue, I would definitely stay again!

    3
    « Older Yet Clean »

Been a long time since we stayed at a motel. Had a 1st floor "suite". Don't bother with a suite. Not worth the additional money. Motel is definitely in "used" condition and need some remodeling. However, staff was exceptionally nice, room and pool area are very clean. AC could have used a little booster. Parking is at a premium. Does not seems to be enough spaces for the number of rooms...very crowded, especially late at night. No restaurant or lounge on site. Plenty within walking distance. I would stay there again, if I were in a pinch.

    2
    « Disappointed »

Room was clean but small. Towels were not replaced and shower pressure was slight. Breakfast was in a tiny, poorly air-conditioned room (as door was left open). The hotel advertises the breakfast as featuring "many Kosher items" but the only clearly kosher item was the cereal. Otherwise, there was nothing for the kosher consumer. Finally, the pool was full of bugs. Even by the standards of a budget hotel, the Lamplighter Inn failed to meet expectations.

    4
« Big difference between the 2nd floor and the ground floor rooms »

A nice and clean motel, however the difference between the 2nd floor and the first floor is like night and day. Always request the 2nd floor because the room is two foot wider and the ceilings are higher and the noise level is significantly higher on the ground floor. Our first night at the motel was noisy and cramped; the staff was very accommodating and moved us to the second floor for the next four nights and we were very pleased. Breakfast room was small and many times did not have a place to sit.

    4
    « 4: rating for a 2 star hotel »

My standard level of hotel comfort is a Courtyard Marriot. This hotel is a little below that bit not far. Room was clean, beds fairly comfortable but in a tight space. Not bad for two nights, but i wouldn't stay any longer than that. I had a pleasant stay.

    5
« Great Family Place to Stay »

We were pleasantly surprised by this Best Western. We have a family of 6. Our daughters are 21,19,19 and 16 so we need more space then when they were little. At this stage we often have to get two rooms but that is an added cost. Here we were able to get a suite. One room had 2 queen beds with a small closet, TV and DVD player. We did rent a free DVD from the front office our first night which was a fun bonus. The second room in the suite has a pull out couch, a chair, small eating table, TV and DVD player and a small kitchenette complete with pots/pans, dishes, dish rag and towel, and even a small bottle of dish soap. It was very nice to have a full size refrigerator and freezer. The rooms were clean and fairly updated. The only negative is that the pull-out couch could use an update. It would have worked for small children but was a little worn for our adult size children. We simply bought a full size air mattress and left it behind. But that is honestly the only real negative. The pool area was nice and peaceful with all the greenery. We ate out breakfast there in the mornings. Breakfast was the normal complimentary with waffles, muffins, danishes, bagels, oatmeal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs and cold cereal. They did have gluten free Cheerios for those that need to follow a gf diet like our daughter. Drinks were coffee, hot tea options, orange juice and apple juice. The room for eating is quite small but like I said it's nice to sit in the pool area. There is a computer with a printer in the office which worked well for us because we went to the USS Midway and saved money getting tickets online and printing them. We were also able to print our boarding passes before leaving. This Beat Western is right in town but as soon as you pull into the drive it's secluded with plant hedges. We really enjoyed our stay!

    3
    « Updae me please »

refresh the place please, put new beds in, maybe paint, add new pictures, how about just remodel. The restroom had despensers for shampoo/ soap/ conditioner however all were empty, so if you have them up fill them up. add trash bins for restrooms, add softner for towels, they were very hard. Pillows were nice and comfy so a bed to fit that would be great! Old pictures on wall, small TV and coffee maker was old.

« A Quick Stay in San Diego »

We would stay here again! The hotel is centrally located, lots of restaurants, stores, and gas stations nearby. Lovely flowers are planted along the pool/walkways. The rooms are fairly average, but clean and up to date. We were told the pool was heated, but unfortunately we didn't get a feel for that. It didn't stop our kiddos though, they swam until they dropped! They offer free DVD rentals at the front desk. This is great for a relaxing night in! Breakfast was tasty, and well stocked. Overall, a lovely little hotel... if we're in the area again we'll be sure to stay here.

    3
« Would not stay again »

Stayed for two nights Pros Clean, Friendly Staff, Inexpensive, nice pool Fine if you just need a place to crash for the night Cons The musty smell. Possibly due to their policy of turning the air off in the rooms when not in use, but didn't go away during our stay. Breakfast was great but really overcrowded. Many people didn't have a place to sit and returned to their rooms. (get there very early) Neighborhood wasn't a great place to walk and find shopping.

    4
    « Nice staff »

Very welcoming. Responsive to special requests. Very clean and comfortable beds.. Good values easy walk to rite aid or 711 if you forgot anything great freeway access. Rooms in back are very quiet. AC units very effective don't keep turning on and off waking you up. Eco conscious policies.

    « Don't judge a book by its cover. »

So when my colleague sent me accommodations information for an upcoming business trip, I couldn't help but think that our company was starting to penny pinch after having browsed the place online. The setup to me seemed more MOTEL than HOTEL. Outside, at street level, not on the property, was the sweet smell of San Diego. I've never seen so many homeless people in my life as I have in San Diego. The hotel surrounding was nice. The rooms were very, very clean and the beds were really comfortable! The complimentary continental breakfast was quite good. Just enough selection to send you on your way. Plus, they have 24 hour free coffee. The hotel staff were very nice and accommodating. One of them could probably benefit from a fire being lit under his butt, nonetheless, they were all quite friendly. If you arrive at the airport, use the shuttle to the hotel (not the hotel's own-they don't have one) to get there. I paid $59.00 by taxi. They told me that the shuttle is only $25. I'd recommend this place.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean. Offered a Continental breakfast with Belgian waffles you could make yourself. Had a small pool, very close to San Diego State University, and small restaurants and Drug Stores. Had computers for your flight check in.

    « great stay.....recommend it to all..... »

We enjoyed the stay.....great staff and wonderful clean and comfortable facility. I had just had spinal surgery and needed to rest...the bed was so supportive and comfortable it really helped me to rest. We were there for high school graduation at SDSU and it was close to the school and easy to get to and from freeway too.

« A few days in San Diego »

A nice clean room in a nice location. Had the usual highway noise and a five o'clock AM garbage truck that sounded like an alarm clock, but no major irritations. All equipment in room worked well. Had a two night stay. Breakfast was well stocked. First morning only hot item was boiled eggs but on second morning there was fried eggs and some Mexican item. Carl's Jr. is right there. Parking lot was sufficient.

« Great location for SDSU visitors »

Front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and inviting, though the pillows could have been a bit more comfortable. Good water pressure in the bathroom, though the hot water in the shower seemed to take a while to warm up. Convenient placement of shampoo, conditioner, and body soap dispensers in the shower area - really liked that. Location isn't that convenient for downtown San Diego, but it is in an area that has lots of services nearby - bars, groceries and fast food (... and, unsurprisingly for a college town, a hookah bar!) Beware the parking - it's pretty tight, so if you have anything larger than a typical sedan, be careful maneuvering around. Also - might have just been that we chose to wake up after 9AM, but dang was someone loud outside and should have been muzzled! :-) Otherwise, a good value!

    « Friendly & very clean hotel! »

Room and bathroom were very clean as well as all common areas and pool, this is of utmost importance to me. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Air conditioning unit worked well and cooled the room quickly. Bed and pillows were super comfortable! Would definitely stay here again.

« Our Favorite Place in San Diego »

We have been staying here since our daughter started college at SDSU in 2010. We have had to stayed at other places on a couple occasions when they were full and for a similar price nothing compares to the wonderful friendly staff, always clean rooms, beautiful pool and quiet setting that you find at the Lamplighter Inn every time. We feel like we are family each time we stay with them & they always ask about the rest of our family. We enjoy our complementary breakfast each morning after a great nights sleep. It is a must stop if staying in San Diego!

« Great Value Great Location »

If you are in San Diego for fun and sun I highly recommend the Best Western Lamplighter Inn & Suites at SDSU. The staff is nice and helpful. The 6:00-10:00 breakfast is always fresh, varied, and plentiful. The hotel is centrally located, 5-15 minutes away from most all tourist attractions. If you forgot something, Target, Ross, and Walmart are 5 minutes away. Quiet... the pool is nice... loved my week long stay here.

    « Kudos...once again! »

The Lamplighter is our Inn of choice whenever we visit the San Diego area. It's location is conveniently and centrally located, the staff is friendly, helpful and courteous, the breakfast is as good as a café and the rooms are more than comfortable. The amenities, such as the beautifully landscaped pool area and WIFI add to it's many charms.

    « love this Place »

THis is our second stay here at the lamplighter, we stayed 2 years ago and had such good memories we had to stay again. we are close to the freeways so able to get to downtown and to the wildlife park very easily. so we drove the 1000 miles to come again for 5 days. The grounds are well kept , the rooms are clean , the wifi was great that both my husband and I could both use our computers with no problem, When we check in they saw we were staying for 5 days and upgraded us for no extra charge. it was wonderful, the only difference we saw was the pool was warmer two years ago , but it did not stop us from using it. only 2 things I would change a little warmer on the pool in May and better stations on the tv with a guide as the direct tv did not work well on letting us know what was on. We will be staying again in Sept. we love the place

this was our second visit we loved it so much two years ago we knew we would stay again. they keep the grounds looking beautiful the pool sits off the road so you have privacy, the only difference from 2 years ago to this year is the pool was warmer 2 years ago but it did not stop us from swimming. we stayed for 5 nights and they upgraded our room on their own. . the only fault I could say is the tv selection would be nice to see more channels but great internet we ran two different lap tops with no problem . We will come again

« Nice place but needs better soundproofing. »

I was in San Diego for a trade show and found the Lamplighter Inn at less than half the price of the major hotels in the downtown. I got a further discount for taking the room which was specially designed as ADA Accessible. The room was very clean and updated with a new bathroom fixtures, shower and sink. I could not find anything that I would call a "yuk" factor since everything appeared spotless. The bed was comfortable and the a/c-heater was modern and reasonably quiet. The sheets blankets and pillows were clean and without any odors. Lighting was adequate. I noticed that the window on the front of the room appeared to be from the 60's and most other rooms in the motel had updated double pane windows. I assume that they haven't yet updated my room. It did not make much difference to have an old window because the parking lot was very quiet and the weather was very mild. The door seemed a little old with a little light getting in around it. The entry lock on the outside of the door is a very modern card access system so I felt that access to the room was secure. I thought that the free "continental breakfast" was very good. The breakfast offered make-it-yourself waffles, pastries, cereal, toast, hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt, decent coffee and juices and more. Everything in the breakfast room was clean and all the food was fresh. There was helpful staff in the breakfast room that was constantly cleaning up guest spills and answering questions such as how to use the waffle maker. There were free copies of USA Today available, though it seems that everyone was either watching the breakfast room TV or focused on their smartphone and not reading the newspaper. The location of the motel is somewhat older and is not located in an "upscale" neighborhood. I felt relatively safe in the motel and motel grounds but did not venture out on foot. The motel has free parking which is nice since some of the larger hotels charge for parking per day. My biggest problem with the motel is that my room was not very soundproof. I needed to get to sleep early in order to get up early. I could hear the TV in the next room as well as people talking in a normal tone of voice to each other. I could not make out their exact words but the noise from the next rooms kept me awake for awhile. Fortunately, they were not really noisy neighbors or I feel that I would never have fallen asleep. The motel is close to SDSU and is a relatively easy drive to Qualcomm Stadium and the Convention Center. The drive time to the downtown was less than 20 minutes even in morning commute traffic. I would consider returning to Lamplighter Inn in the future since it has a lot going for it with good prices. I would just hope that future neighbors keep the noise level down.

« Great location for SDSU »

Older but well-maintained property with nice landscaping. Comfortable bed. Tight parking. Small, pleasant lobby. Small breakfast room with adequate breakfast included in price. No exercise room. Have stayed at this property numerous times while our child attended SDSU. Easy walk to campus (about a mile) to avoid traffic/parking problems on campus. Prices vary according to campus activities (much higher at school opening/closing).

    « Convenient location »

We've stayed here several times, it's near the college and it's easy to get anywhere in San Diego from here. The staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are nice and clean, and the bed comfortable. I love the Terra Pure Green Tea soaps & lotion, nice smell. The breakfast was a good variety of fruit, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, 3 kinds of dry cereal, muffins, waffles, breads and fruit. We stayed 6 nights, so the variety was appreciated! The Wi-Fi was a little unpredictable, cutting off or slowing down during the heavy use hours - early evening mostly, but it was fine the rest of the time. We'll stay here again.

    « Stinky sink »

After a seven hour drive we just needed an overnight stay. I booked this based on the reviews and the proximity to SDSU. According to the reviews it seemed great but, I don't think so. As I entered the room I could smell musty moldy old hotelish something... I remember my first thought was that we would all be smelling like this hotel by the time we leave. Everything was eh. Anyway, we needed to rest before the concert which is why I didn't complain to the manager. After about an hour or two we began to get ready for our event. I went to bush my teeth and almost threw up! As I leaned over the sink I could smell rotten awful disgusting drain. We were on a time limit and out the door so again I had no time to complain. I wondered if we just got a bad room or all the reviews were inaccurate. Should we have had to stay another day I would have not slept in that room again! We got back to the room by midnight and left by 8. The good part was check-in. Simple and friendly even through the remodeling and the pool being done.

    « Overall rating - excellant »

We chose this lodging because of it location close to UCSD. We were treated very well by the staff there. They were helpful with directions and recommending restaurants etc. Our room was spotless and inviting and the grounds were nicely landscaped and spotless. Overall the experience was excellant and would book again.

    « Good experience »

This is a nice, simple hotel. Good location with easy access to the big roads. The staff is friendly and my room was a good size, clean, and quiet. The breakfast is fairly simple but adequate. The breakfast room is small though and one day there was nowhere to sit. Overall this hotel is good value with complimentary WiFi, parking, and breakfast, along with a heated pool. I'd stay here again.

« Great Place to stay in San Diego area »

Nice clean hotel in outskirts of San Diego. All employees were wonderful and more than willing to give suggestions about things we might see. They really knew the area. Seems to be a wonderful family hotel

« Well tended, clean, friendly »

I want to give a shout out to Evelyn at the front desk. I made a reservation at the last minute when I left a hotel I hated. She gave me the last ground floor room and made sure everything was awesome for my stay. Super friendly and exactly what I needed. Don't be worried when you see that this is in a university area. This just meant there were lots of affordable restaurants in the area. Nice job!

« Great Potential - missed the mark »

The family suites are a perfect arrangement for our family. We stayed at this location a year ago and had some maintenance issues, but decided to stay again this year. The staff and housekeeping have resort level hospitality skills. The landscaping is well maintained and exterior is neat and tidy. The location is a little sketchy. Surrounded by many smoke shops and tattoo shops, I wouldn't feel comfortable walking the neighborhood at night. The parking lot is a tight fit. Difficult to park in and not enough spaces. However this location is one mile from the tournament we compete in every year and easy access to SD activities. However the room interiors are needing full renovation. The room we stayed in on this trip had had some kitchen renovation - but the rest of the room was not habitable. There was mold growing on the wallpaper. (The moldy section was replaced during our stay.) The sleeper sofa was held together with tie wraps. The fabric was stained with use. Our room was next to the laundry facilities (which were clean and worked very well) and we could hear the arcade game in our room through the night. We checked out early. Michelle was truly concerned about our stay and did what she was able to do to make things right. Not sure if I will give this location a third shot.

« Snug harbor in a storm (literally) »

Arrived in SD at twilight in the middle of a raging wind and rain storm just before Christmas. We had no reservations and trolled several places before settling on the Lamplighter. Luck was definitely with us. Older facility, but nicely kept. Friendly and helpful staff even helped us get oriented on a map when it was clear our GPS was subpar. Dreary breakfast room, but a nice meal nevertheless. Good all 'round.

« Good hotel, nice prized »

This is a good hotel at a central location. It looks nice from the outside with flowers and a nice pool. Rooms are spacius, breakfast is ok. The ladies at the front desk are very helpfull. So this hotel is a excellent choice if your are planning to stay in San Diego.

    5
« Great Place to Stay »

Nice hotel that is comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was well stocked and staff was friendly and helpful. For the price and convenience, the hotel was well worth it. They were able to accommodate us with three rooms next to each other. The rooms were cleaned and well maintained.

    4
    « Great Facility »

The Lamplighter is maintained in an excellent manner and the landscaping is beautifully done. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would rate this facility excellent except that the breakfast facility is totally inadequate. It is to small to accommodate the guest. I understand that they intend to remodel and expand the area which is defiantly needed. If I am in San Diego again I will defiantly stay at the Lamplighter.

    5
« We Will Be Return Guests »

This is a very homey hotel. The landscaping is beautiful. The rooms are plenty spacious. Our first room had an upholstered chair and ottoman which was very comfortable. Our next visit had a sofa, upholstered chair and coffee table. The beds were very comfortable. Both rooms had the sink outside the shower area. The rooms looked freshly painted and the carpeting like new. They were the cleanest rooms ever. Each room had a nice desk and chair and flat screen TV. There really is nothing I could complain about. The rooms are away from the road and were very quiet at night. It is an older building and 2 story. Request a first floor room if you can not do stairs with your luggage. There is free parking right in front of your room. A light breakfast is available. It not only was a lovely place to stay, but a terrific value. San Diego, Mission Valley and Old Town attractions are only minutes away.

    5
« A convenient place close to SDSU »

Quiet hotel, really close to SDSU. The complimentary breakfast is great and everybody there was nice and helpful. This was the second time I stayed at the Lamplighter and definitely if I have to fly back to San Diego I will return.

Nice Hotel close to the college and arena. Close to Restaurants. Customer service is great, breakfast is awesome, but the rooms smelled a bit due to moisture in the rooms and in the carpet. Overall a decent hotel.

« Great one night stay »

My experience was consistent with the great reviews of this hotel that I had read in Trip Advisor. I took a mini-suite with a king bed. Fabulous. Great help on local directions from the staff at check in. I arrived late and needed a quiet room and a chance to rest. I got all that I could ask for. Clean, well appointed room, good wifi, nice bath facilities. It is an extremely well maintained property, especially considering how old it is. I chose this hotel because I was attending a meeting as San Diego State University, which is just 10 minutes away. This hotel was much more convenient for this purpose than the many others that are located on Hotel Circle. Unlike those large chain hotels, this one was small, friendly, and had a great personality. I will remember it if I return to the University for another visit.

« Excellent choice for the area »

My husband & i needed 3 nights in a hotel closest to Lemon Grove to visit with family. I checked reviews of hotels in the area and settled on Best Western. it was a very good choice. the room was clean, king bed was comfortable, we both slept very well! breakfast served between 6-10 am, great choices. the dining area was small~ but i brought it back to our room.

    « Comfortable Stay! »

Did not really know where in the San Diego area we were staying at but this was a pleasant surprise. A family memorial we were attending was right next door. Staff was very helpful in giving us directions to restaurants, beaches and attractions in the area. Made our visit very comfortable and welcoming.

    5
    « Very pleasant »

If you are looking to stay in the La Mesa / College area, this is an excellent choice. The rooms are clean and relatively quiet. The young lady who checked us in was very pleasant. Nice pool. Free wifi. I thought the breakfast was just right. In addition to cereal and pastries, they had a waffle iron for fresh waffles and a big crock pot of steel cut oatmeal (not the packets of freeze dried oatmeal you normally see). We travel to San Diego frequently to visit family, and between El Cajon Blvd and University Ave, this is one of our two favorite spots. Will definitely return.

    4
    « Comfortable & Convient »

spent 3 nights. great quiet location. close to anything you want to see in the entire area yet not touristy. reasonably priced. has free breakfast but the breakfast is crowded and noisy. computer is available.

    3
« Good room; questionable breakfast »

I stayed in a suite, so I had a kitchen, living room, and bedroom. The room was clean and everything was in good condition. They offer a breakfast and the first day we went and the waffle machine was broken. There were no eggs or meat or fresh fruit. Let's just say that it was minimal. The next morning, the breakfast room was closed without a posting as to why. It's good value and was a convenient location to my work in El Cajon. I recommend it if one doesn't want breakfast included.

    3
    « Didappointing »

The hotel is a bit away from most San Diego attractions, about 20-25 minutes with no traffic. Location suited us fine since we spent both our days out and just slept there. It isn't as cute or kept up as it looks on the website's pictures. It was clean though and staff was very friendly. We had a microwave but no little fridge. Room and bathroom were a bit dated/ carpet worn. Nothing special here. Adequate t wouldn't really recommend I guess.

    4
« Oasis in La Mesa »

Older motel but well maintained. This is not a glitzy resort but a cozy and comfortable option in an area convenient to freeway & most attractions. The grounds are lovely, filled with flowers & greenery; nice little pool area where you can gather to enjoy the weather & pool was heated so even if weather is cool you can still enjoy a dip. There is no elevator but the desk clerk offered help with luggage. We had a suite with full kitchen and a bedroom that could be closed off from the living area which is ideal for us (I'm an early riser, hubby likes to sleep in). Your family/friends in La Mesa/San Diego may furrow their eyebrows with concern when you tell them you are staying on El Cajon Blvd but this area is undergoing gentrification and is quite spiffed up. There are restaurants and a grocery store nearby and downtown La Mesa has undergone quite a face lift. Staff are friendly & helpful.

We went for the weekend to see Jeff Dunham and picked Best Western because it was close to the venue. Great decision. Everyone was pleasant and very helpful. Hotel was great..Swimming was heated which was a plus.

    « Great Value »

I recently stayed at the Lamplighter to attend Explore SDSU with my daughter. We also stayed in the summer when we toured the campus. Both times the room was clean, comfortable and relatively quiet. As mentioned when you look the hotel up, it is an older establishment but it has most of the amenities one needs for a weekend or overnight stay. There is a heated pool, small fridge, microwave, coffee maker and breakfast (toast, bagels, waffles, yogurt, etc.) For us, it was very convenient because of the proximity to campus. There is a fabulous sushi place within walking distance. It's a great value for a reasonable price!

    « Nice »

I gave 5 stars because overall our stay was great. They upgraded our room from a standard king to a suite which was nice of them to do. The only downside is that the parking lot is small so it gets filled up quickly. The area is near a University so there can be a bit of traffic but not major. I would recommend staying here.

    3
« Good for what it was... »

The room was clean and the staff pleasant. Not the greatest looking area but it serves it's purpose of being a place to lay your head. It's located 20 minutes from the airport which was nice. The walls are paper-thin so if you have noisy neighbors, you'll hear them. Overall, like I said, it served it's purpose.

    « Excellent hotel »

Very Friendly and helpful front desk. Excellent Housekeeping team. My rooms were very clean. They have free parking on site, free wifi, free breakfast ( the breakfast room was VERY small) My first night was terrible though. I had a King room on the ground floor right next to the parking. Impossible to sleep. The next 9 nights, they changed my room to second floor. A Queen room with complete kitchenette, like an apartment. It was GREAT. Less noise and very comfortable. Very clean. The location of this hotel was perfect for those who have children or friends at SDSU. There were lots of restaurants ( american and exotic ones) shops, super markets, pubs hairand nails salons, fitness clubs etc etc. They were really not expensive. My son who attends SDSU lives in a condo just 5 minutes walk from this hotel where there is an outdoor swimming pool too.

The hotel is in a decent area in land from the harbor (20 minutes) but well worth the effort and time. It is close to the University and has a few good family restaurants near by. The area is surprisingly quit and the pool is highly refreshing. I would absolutely recommend this hotel.

    « pleasant visit »

Heated pool and complimentary breakfast were perks of the hotel. Not to far from area sites as well as the ratings from other visitors made this our choice of hotel and we were not let down. The staff replaced a broken DVR (complimentary movie rentals) and were able to provide an ice pack for my spouse. Friendly staff and accommodating.

« Excellent place to stay near SDSU »

Hotel is very clean. Our room was on the second floor and there was no elevator, so when I expressed some concern about hauling a 50 lb bag up the stairs, the person checking me in graciously offered to carry it up to our room. Breakfast was decent. Not as extensive as an Embassy Suites, but better than others claiming to have breakfast. Good restaurants within walking distance.

« Service wins the day »

Every member of the staff went out of their way to ensure our comfort, satisfaction, and unique needs. The family suite was ideal, including 2 Queen beds, a pull out sofa, and a kitchen with microwave and full size fridge. On site parking is included, as is a free breakfast room with bagels, make your own waffles, yogurts, and fruit

    « business stay »

nice hotel - more of a motel, but still comfortable. Quiet. Parking is a little small but in San Diego that's usually the case. The beds were very comfortable and clean. I would definitely stay here again. If there were a "Motel" classification, it'd give it a 5 Star Motel rating.

    4
    « Aged rest. »

As seniors, we desire a quiet pleasant location. This hotel fulfilled these requirements. The room was adequately large, the bed was comfortable and the overall atmosphere was relaxing. Had this been a little warmer time of year, we would have used the heated swimming pool.

    « Passing through »

After searching for reasonable lodging near airport, I found this gem about 15 (by car). Nice, clean, quiet hotel near SD University. Room include free breakfast, although a bit skimpy, but better than others. FREE PARKING! Lots of restaurants, bars, shops within walking distance. I'll certainly stay here on future SD trips.

    5
    « Convience and friendliness »

I've been staying at this hotel since my son began attending SDSU in 2012. I visit at least 3 times a year. The hotel is consistently clean and the staff is exceptionally courteous and kind. The breakfast is a great value and it is so convenient to campus and events (like graduation), that I think it's worth it's pretty reasonable price.

« Very Nice Old School Graciousness. »

The facility and Staff are top notch. Can't say enough nice things about the Front Office Manager, Gilda Prado! The grounds are well maintained and the rates are reasonable. Zero Road noise. I asked that upon our arrival, my daughter would have a welcome home fruit basket waiting for her after being overseas in the U.S. Military. Wonderful basket and an unexpected welcome home card were waiting for her upon check-in. Nicely done, Folks. I will definitely use this location again.

    « Nice Place »

Our experience here was very good. The staff were helpful and friendly. The room was clean. I expected it to hear more road noise as it is located on a busy street but was pleasantly surprised. The breakfast was nicely presented with a good selection (waffles, oatmeal, toast, bagels, cold cereal, muffins, Danish, coffee, tea, orange juice, apple juice). There are a lot of restaurant options in the area. It was easy to get to from the airport.

« Dog friendly and good value »

Found the value to be great at Lamplighter - rooms were big enough for us and both our large dogs - have small dog area for "dog stuff' but bags are provided. Super front desk staff - thanks, ladies. Very decent breakfast to start our day. Got a great recommendation for supper - across the street at the Mediterranean restaurant - great food at a very good price. Found great dog park - Ocean Beach off lease park with loads of beach and water for our dogs and the other 70 or so dogs who were there - love this city and all it's amenities!!! Had a lovely park right behind the hotel as well.

    5
    « Surprisingly Cleaned »

Whenever I checked in a hotel, I cleaned the pole of the closet and some other places, such as the desk and table in the room. This hotel was always cleaned. There was neither dust nor dirt even on the pole of the closet. Further, the pole of the shower curtain was cleaned, too. I even checked on the top of the bed board, which was also amazingly cleaned. I think the top of the bed board has somehow dust in many hotels. But this hotel doesn't. Since I'm not tall enough to reach the top of the door to the bathroom, I assume it should be cleaned, too.

We've stayed at a lot of Best Westerns since the early 70s, and this one ranks in our top 5. The hotel is loaded with upgrades and updating; the room was large and comfortable; and staff was friendly and efficient. When we return to San Diego, we'll choose this Best Western, for sure!

« Best stop over for snowbirds »

So my grandmother needed another place to stay before going home. Just getting dropped off from the Airport, the staff helped her with baggage to the office as well as to the room. The room she got was like a little cottage off from the rest of the hotel. It was spacious with a kitchenette and was dog friendly. Great price for the size of the room. Nice landscaping along the walkway makes it feel more like a home . She only stayed the one night because we were unsure of the hotel experience, but now that we know, she'll plan a longer stay to enjoy the sights of San Diego with us. Easy driving access from 70th st to the freeway or straight down El Cajon Blvd from the 8.

We would definitely return to this hotel. It suited our purposes because we wanted to be close to SDSU without a lot of driving. We had stayed at a place on El Cajon before and did not like the area at all, but this section of El Cajon was much better.

    « Concsistently good »

We have stayed at this hotel many times over the years while visiting our family in San Diego, and it's always excellent, with a caring staff and nice rooms. We especially like the mini-suite, which gives us some extra space as well as a fridge and microwave, and we enjoy the pool, too.

    « Excellent Hotel »

This hotel was better than I expected and the staff were very friendly. It is always a plus when they allow dogs which is a main reason that we chose hotels. We were in the area for an event and it was a prime location. Due to the fact that I work in downtown SD, this will be a nice hotel to stay at if needed. I would recommend it.

    « Great Hotel »

This is a great option, if you have plans in San Diego. The hotel has everything and is very clean. Staff is very supportive and everything is really nice. The only down is the AC but all of the hotels have a similar system in the area

    « Stellar property »

Overall this property is an outstanding location. Every facet of my stay was above expectations. Friendly, professional and congenial staff! If in the area don't pass up the opportunity to stay and rest awhile. And don't forget your swim attire as the pool is sparkling clean and refreshing.

    « Absolutely great! »

Stayed for 3 nights while visiting SD The place was in great neighborhood, clean and very nice staff. The location is a bit far from the city but for us it was great (had a car) Wifi great, breakfast is very good although small sitting area. Laundry room was in great condition and works flawlessly Would recommend, high value per money

« Short Stay for College Move »

Stayed here twice during our daughters move for college. Both times the room was clean, and the bed, pillows and linen were as good as a more luxurious hotel. There was a small pool, but we didn't go to it, and the breakfast was filling if you are good with pastries, waffles, oatmeal, cereals, bagels and toast. This is a great alternative to spending more if you are traveling or need a short stay in San Diego!

    « Wonderful »

We stayed here for a week. The staff was very helpful. The breakfast was delicious. The neighborhood seemed safe, we walked 6 blocks to get something to eat. Lot's of restaurants nearby. The room was clean and quiet. Nice pool. Thank You Best Western!

« Great value, clean, fun and personable »

Wow! You certainly get a lot of 'bang for your bucks'. The location is easy access...the site is clean and well cared for...the room was excellent with internet, micro, fridge and extra pillows...the staff helpful and friendly and they accommodated our dog without 'batting an eye'. The pool area is refreshing and beautifully lit at night. The homemade waffle breakfast and helpful wait staff was an added bonus. We've stayed here before and will again.
