    « Consistently excellent »

My husband and I always stay here when visiting family. It's a great place, comfortable, super-clean, with exceptionally friendly staff. The wifi is free and fast, the pool is nice, the breakfast is good. Although the breakfast area is a bit small, they don't mind if you eat by the pool., which is lovely. We'll be back!

« Good quiet stay at this clean/affordable property »

Recently had another good stay at the Lamplighter. Gilda at the front desk was very helpful. The property is not in the best area of town but there is a sports bar across the street and a good taco shop on the same block. A good alternative choice to hotel circle and close to SDSU. I will return to the Lamplighter in the future

    « Clean & comfortable, great staff »

The staff here is very helpful and will not think twice to go out of their way to help you! The room was very clean... every bathroom corner was sparkling clean! The furnishings are not overly fancy, but the room is comfortable and very suitable for the purpose.

    « Weekend Getaway »

I'm always leery when trying a "new" hotel that is an older property. But I checked all the reviews on here and decided to give the Lamplighter Inn a try. I can say I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. It was clean, quite and would definitely stay here again. The hotel is located close to SDSU, but we were actually there to see the city and go to Sea World. The hotels location actually was not that bad, about 20 minutes to all the major areas of San Diego. It was easy to get around and we didn't mind the drive. The continental breakfast the hotel offer was substantial and offered various options. The breakfast room was small, but everything was clean and well stocked. The only issue we had, and why I didn't give 5 stars, was with the WiFi. We had issues trying to connect and were never able too. Our room was located towards the back of the property, so I'm not sure if that was the issue or not. But that was the only issue. We with definitely be adding this hotel to our list of San Diego hotels, for return trips!

« So close to San Diego State Campus »

I love the closeness to the campus so it makes visiting our student easy! We will continue to stay here while our child is a student at San Diego State and will suggest the location to others visiting their student as well.

    « Very comfortable stay »

We only stayed here one night but we enjoyed our stay. Very clean and comfortable. Nothing to possibly complain about. I didn't use the internet, so I can't speak for it. I was pleasantly surprised over this hotel's economizing ways to stay green, such as the shampoo and body wash dispensers in the shower. A decent complimentary breakfast and very nice staff! When we're in San Diego we'll try to stay here again!

« Quiet Clean Free Breakfast Awesome Staff Great Pool »

What makes me most happy about this hotel is how quiet it is. This was our second long term stay here in a Family Suite unit with our two young children. Our suite had a closed off bedroom and nice living room with kitchenette- stocked with everything you need for cooking. Nice size refrigerator/freezer too! We live close by and were having work down at our home both times, so this was very convenient for us. The staff is awesome, from our check in with Michelle, to our check out with Gilda. Gilda really went above and beyond and treated us like old friends! By the way, the included breakfast is awesome too, with tons of options for us and the kids. And housekeeping kept our unit in tip top shape and had a great schedule. Thanks again Gilda, and your whole team for giving us another pleasant stay!!!

    « Less then helpful »

1st off the stay was good no concerns , clean and had most of what anyone might need. Had to book the stay using a 3 rd party as it was for a Hockey tournament . I had asked for Friday and Saturday night knowing we would drive in for the games on Friday morning. I did get a confirmation sent but just put into my e mail file labeled Hockey. On Sunday as we were checking out I find I have an additional charge for Thursday on my bill. The counter tells me to contact the Group sales . I contact the Group sales and was treated as if they could really care less about my issue and send me to the 3rd party who then puts it back on the hotel. So we get the run around . The 3rd party contacts the hotel Group sales Manager who I had spoke to and they decline to take care of the Thursday night stay. Big surprise we should have known big business over the customer is the way of the times. In the future we will verify our reservations and will always pick a hotel chain that treats the customers with respect and act as if they care.

    « Good Nights Sleep »

This was an excellent hotel and it felt safe and inviting. The grounds were beautifully kept and with only one way in and one way out it felt very safe as well as quiet. The pool was great. Everyone was very attentive to my needs. The location of the hotel was perfectly close to family and friends. I will definitely stay here again.

    « Clean »

Upon arrival I wad a little leery but was quickly reassured!! The rooms are very clean and the staff was very accommodating. If want a clean place to stay that is conveniently located and provides breakfast before you set off to experience San Diego, Best Western Lamplighter should be your choice!!

    « Pleasant Stay »

The hotel is conveniently located near the SDSU campus. It offers a clean, comfortable stay with a complimentary 'continental plus' breakfast. Check in/out was a breeze. The staff is friendly and accommodating.

    « Family Graduation »

We had a very nice time with the rental of 6 rooms for this event. The hotel was very comfortable, easy access to UCSD, and surrounding restaurants and freeways. Breakfast was convenient and rooms comfortable.

    « Great experience here! »

We are so glad we booked here. The room prices are reasonable and affordable. We got the suite which included a little living room space, kitchen, and separate room for bedroom. The bathroom was great size as well. The kitchen had everything from plates to utensils to cups and a small coffee maker and toaster. It had a microwave, oven and stove. Also a full size fridge! The room was overall nice. It was clean and didn't have any funny smells. The room could get hot so when we were there we kept the AC on at times. With it on, it was nice and fresh. The only thing that could be improved are the pillows. Maybe we have sensitive necks but the pillows were a bit too firm for our liking so it was hard to sleep on them. Next time bringing our own pillows may be a better option. The fact that breakfast was included each day was a huge plus. Staff was very friendly and on our last night we even checked out a movie from the front desk to have a chill movie night before hitting the road the next day. I would definitely stay here again. No complaints.

« Great motel for value »

This motel is located near San Diego State, not in the center of San Diego. It is located very close to Highway 8 which crosses from West to East and connects with all other freeways in the city. It is therefore cheaper than more central hotels. However, the quality of the motel is great. All staff are very helpful and friendly. We have stayed here before and will again.

    « Weekend »

Great mid sized hotel conveniently located for our activities, walkable to a handful of good restaurants, stores. Very friendly staff, very helpful. Great value for me and my family. Very nice clean pool. Good breakfast.

    « Terrific People - Terrific People »

Excellent staff. Housekeeping (Espe) outstanding. Pride in doing a good job shows. GM Len at check-in and Gilda at check-out treated us as old friends. Our 3rd stay at this property and once again happy with our experience.

    « Clean »

Staff was great. Rooms are very clean. Breakfast is mostly carbs but hard boiled eggs and yogurt are available. Down side is the breakfast area is very small and people were lingering long after eating so table space was a hot commodity. The pizza takeout menu came I handy and I wish I'd have written down the name of it because their pizza was great!

« A great place to stay in the SDSC area. »

Clean, comfortable, good breakfast, beautiful grounds and the hotel staff are professional. I always stay at this Best Western Hotel when I'm in the area on business. The rooms are clean and quiet and the beds are very comfortable. The landscape is exceptional with beautiful roses and green lawns. I see the same gardeners year after year.

« Excellent stay, small, well kept and very enjoyable »

Had never been to San Diego and after checking out the various hotels and locations on the internet came up with this hotel. We like smaller hotels and this one was perfect for us. Two storey complex, we stayed on top floor with a small kitchen. Older complex but everything clean, well maintained both inside and outside. The pool area was great. Location was very good for getting around with a rental car. Area was safe. The free breakfast provided had a great selection of food so that you could have plenty of options. We stayed a week and would certainly recommend it and we would also stay again. All hotel staff were very courteous and helpful.

« Best Western Lamplighter Inn, SDSU »

Our experience was exceptional. The staff from reservations, check-in and maid service can be matched but not exceeded in quality of service. We had a king-sized bedroom with seating area, which was very comfortable, and at a price that was a great old American value.

    « Lamplighter Inn SD »

This site is well maintained and very comfortable. The staff is pleasant and helpful. We always stay at this location when visiting our daughter at SDSU. It is close to the campus and all of the good stuff in San Diego. It is great motel for the price.

« The name of the hotel is apt - "BEST WESTERN..... " »

The BEST experience in customer service, room comfort and location. The hotel is in the best location, very calm location with easy access to many shops, pharmacies and malls. Staff here are extremely courteous, approachable and make you feel comfortable. The room size and options are very convenient for families. We stayed here with family and had opted for a room with kitchen since we stayed for 3 weeks. Kitchen had all the necessary utensils so we had to only stock the fridge with groceries. Had the best experience ever.

    « Lamplighter Inn - BW »

Most of the Best Western hotels I've stayed in never fail to deliver a fine night's stay. When I travel I like to get out and experience a city, etc. Best Western is the best basic, clean, quiet, and affordable hotel that offers all the amenities necessary for a simple stay. I personally do not need luxurities. I just need a clean, quiet place to lay my head after a fun day out exploring while on vacation. BW does a fine job offering this. and breakfast is always very nice and appreciated. This includes the Lamplighter Inn!

« Arrived as last minute, staff very cordial in taking care of us because of later arrival »

Experienced excellent service from all members of the staff that we came in contact with. Room very clean, nice size, comfortable beds and had the features that we like, tv, microwave, refrigerator, and ac. Excellent continental breakfast with great choices.

    « Family Fun Stay »

Great Hotel and location. This hotel was great no problems that I noticed what so ever. Never had problems getting parking, kids loved the pool and breakfast. The rooms were clean and spacious. We had a group stay with 3 rooms and they were close together and each group had a great time. I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

    « nice motel »

Very nice motel at the edge of the boulevard. Friendly staff. We had a nice and big room with a beautiful bathroom. The breakfast is available to the host. The room is a bit small, but you can take to prevail. We have taken the outdoor pool which is fine. There is a place for grilling. Parking available. Attention if you come home late, there is not enough room. Washing machine and dryer available. Very well.

    « Excellent as Always! »

Rooms and facilities are always neat and clean. The staff here is very friendly and always willing to give you a hand. This hotel is barely a mile away from the SDSU campus and is our preferred place to stay when visiting.

« Nice Oasis Near SDSU »

In general this is a very nice hotel with clean comfortable rooms and a nice pool area in a fairly safe location. The only downside I would say is that they did not have a restroom near the breakfast area. This is very important when traveling with a family because sometimes you leave people sleeping to go get breakfast and when you cannot use the restroom anywhere you have to go back to the room and wake everyone up.

« Room smelled, carpet was MOIST.. »

I didn't expect much for the price, I know budget hotels aren't gonna be luxurious but as soon as we entered the room we felt the heavy, wet, old carpet odor. It was difficult to be there long, and impossible to eat anything in there. If it wasn't for that, it would have been ok. The pool and spa are ok. Not overcrowded when we went. Breakfast is basic.

    « College check in »

Great hotel , most of the time used for families having children going to SDSU, room are spacious, small bathroom, all basic requirement can be found. Heated swimming pool , Internet access and close to SDSU. Staff very friendly. Parking space available free of charge.

« Weekend stay for an event in town »

This location was more economical than the Hotel Circle option our event was at. It's an older property, but well-maintained. The staff is friendly, the room was clean, with decent breakfast options. Out room had one bed with a kitchen. I loved having this! They provide pans, dishes, bowls, serve ware, and a few kitchen tools. This made it more like a home away from home! After check in, I discovered we forgot to pack a toothbrush and razor. The front desk provided them! When I asked the price, they said no charge. Not sure if this is common; never has happened to me before, but it was convenient and nice that they were able to assist. The pricing of this location was extremely competitive, so I give them a full rating for providing everything I needed to make my weekend enjoyable at an affordable price.

« It was a quick overnight visit to see the Chargers play The Cardinals with my son and best friend »

The hotel was quiet, the pool was clean, the rooms were immaculate and the front desk was funny and extremely helpful! My son got to watch his team (Chargers) and then eat dinner at the pool after swimming! My son said this was the best trip of his life. Thank you Lamplighter you guys rock! Try the Angry Birds bar and Grill across the street it was amazing!

    « Enjoyed My Stay »

I stayed three nights and thought the staff went out of their way to anticipate my needs and make my stay comfortable. Not being familiar with San Diego, I appreciated the easy access to I-8 and the convenient location. Most importantly I felt safe, both in the motel and the surrounding area. Motel is two stories but I heard no noise from other rooms or outside and found my room quiet. I am an early riser and enjoyed getting my continental breakfast and free USA Today each morning and going out by the outdoor pool to sit. The area is nicely landscaped with lots of flowers and shrubs. The room was exceptionally clean and alrhough on the small side had everything I needed. I would definitely stay here again.

    « Very Clean »

Very Clean, no bugs and comfortable beds. Smaller than we're used to staying in but well worth the money to stay here. Lots of eating places close by. Rented 3 Red Box movies and used the room's dvd player.

« Nice small hotel with tight parking »

It's a nice Best Western hotel with good staff. Rooms are clean and the AC work well. There are a few things that take away a point: the parking is tight even with our family minivan. We got unexpected wake up call from some body car alarm goes off in the middle of the night right outside our room! and one night from the shampoo dispenser in the bath room came off the wall and crashed in the bath tub. It would be nice if they install a room safe and a small refrigerator.

« Our second time here and, overall, a good stay »

We decided to stay here again, two years after our first stay. The staff continues to be friendly and helpful and the price is reasonable. My only suggestion, which I offered to the front desk, is that whoever washes the towels should wear a hair net.....I discovered a clump of long hair, surprisingly, when I started to use a fresh towel after a bath. Otherwise, they still offer a nice breakfast and a good value for the stay.

    « Family stay »

This hotel staff were all very friendly & helpful--from front desk to breakfast room and cleaning staff. The rooms were clean & met our expectations given price point. The pool area is nice. We were impressed with the beautiful flowers.

    « very disappointed »

First off, we booked a room for 6 people, which included a separate living room with pull out sofa, and a kitchenette, but what we got was a room for 4 people, when I questioned it, they told me all rooms were booked but they would give me a roll away free of charge. Well, the roll away came from a dingy storage room and it took up any walking room we had in our room. If anyone needed to go to the bathroom we had to climb over the other beds, this went on for 2 night, caused they were booked both nights, then when I asked if we could have a late check out due to our lack of room, they gave me a 1/2 hour, how insulting. And the picture on the website did not match the picture of the hotel or room. Extremely dissapointed....

    « Good value »

Stayed for three nights. Typical mid range motel, with friendly staff, decent free breakfast. Market price was reasonable. Two queen beds, with good A/C. Not a resort but a good room for overnight. Provided direction to major sites. About 20 minutes to zoo and Seaworld. Discount coupons on rack saved us a lot.

« Clean and comfortable close to SDSU »

Picked this hotel because it was south of SDSU which is crazy on move in day. Thought we could avoid backed up traffice coming from the other direction...looks like it will work. Clean and comfortable room

    « I've had better with BW »

Overpriced (ComicCon weekend. We weren't there for ComicCon). Bug in raisins. Lumpy, hard bed. Soft, rotting oranges at breakfast. I've had way better at BW in Nevada and will stay with them again. Just not in San Diego.

« Great place to stay in San Diego »

Minutes from downtown San Diego, the Lamplighter Inn is a fantastic place to be. They treat you well, they are always upgrading AND maintaining what they have to offer. The best part of the place is that friendly feeling (safe and comfortable) that is so rare these days. The staff go out of their way to provide an inviting stay that makes you want to come back! If you are planning a trip to San Diego, you MUST stay here!

    « Cozy & Quiet »

This placed offered a cozy and quiet place for my family and I to enjoy. The room was clean and amenities were appropriate. The hotel was conveniently located close to SDSU, which was perfect. I would have liked to see more food and entertainment options closer to the hotel. Parking was a bit of a challenge.

« Small but comfy suite. »

We booked the family suite as it was cheaper than two individual rooms for our boys and my wife and I. We just used the large frig and microwave as my wife had no desire to cook on vacation. (It was only one night anyway) My kids aren't used to sharing a bed, but they managed. My oldest enjoyed the pool as well. The staff was attentive whenever we needed something. I always shop for the price/options wherever we go, and I will put this hotel my list of future stay at possibilities in San Diego.

« Great for road trips! »

Very Nice Staff! Good Breakfast, Room Equipped with large bed, micro, table, Full kitchen with stove/sink, refrigerator, powder area and bathroom! Quiet area, good AC, close to Freeway, only 15 to 25 min drive to various San Diego Attractions, close to Supermarket, gas station , etc. Only con is tight parking spaces.

« This is a MOTEL and it is loud, friendly staff »

I guess with the name "Inn & Suites" and the good reviews, I expected something nicer than this standard motel. The office staff was super friendly and the room was clean. We only stayed one night. We could hear conversations of the neighbors next door. Our ground floor room was so loud in the morning with people loading their cars and "honking" every time they locked their car (started at 6:30 am). The hotel cannot control that, but really unfortunate. Maybe the second floor is better. It's a MOTEL with cars right outside your door. The breakfast was simple with waffles, bagels/breads, cereal, yogurt, and hard boiled eggs. Not much seating inside the breakfast room.

« Great hotel, exemplary customer service »

We stayed the week of July 4th, while our kids were at Sea World Camp. We had a Queen Studio with a sleeper sofa. We took to calling it our "flat." I had a lot of time to notice any issues with the property, having worked in high school as a hotel maid, and later life as an Executive Assistant to a resort property manager, I know the business well. Here are things you'll want to know: Service: These people bend over backward to accommodate you, from the moment we arrived, to breakfast, to housekeeping, everyone was pleasant, professional and knew their role in creating a positive experience for all their guests. They have free movies at the front desk for you to check out. Cleanliness: Yes the property is older, but in our studio room, I could not find a spider web, or a bit of dust. The carpets are nice and cushy and clean, the tile well maintained, the showers spotless, and all furniture and appliances were in great working condition. Linens: the sheets were soft, the pillows weren't too fluffy, or flat and the blankets were perfect weight for keeping the room just on the cool side to sleep well. The one thing I was truly surprised at was the condition of their towels. For the price and age of the property, I expected flat, dull, worn towels. These towels were bright white, fluffy, and absorbent. Kitchen set up: The kitchen has a full-size refrigerator/freezer and stove, a microwave, a toaster and a 4 cup coffeemaker. It comes with a full set of pans (skillet, large, medium and small sauce pans and lids. It also has a full compliment of cooking utensils, eating utensils (even an ice cream scoop), and plastic tumblers (16 oz) coffee cups, saucers, bread plates, dinner plates and large cereal bowls for four. There were two serrated edge paring knives and two butter knives, but four forks and spoons. A dish drainer, dish soap and an washing sponge, along with dish cloth and dish towel were also provided. Environment: our room was near the street and in front of the pool, but we never had an issue with noise from either. There is a reasonable laundry room on site, and a computer should you need to access a printer while there. Wifi is free with a user name and password. Nearby: There are two supermarkets (Ralphs and Vons) nearby, along with a plethora of restaurants, a huge Starbucks, Burger King, Chipotle, Subway, Smashburger, and some interesting ethnic restaurants as well. It was at most a 15 minute drive to all the fun locations like Sea World, the USS Midway, the San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park. This hotel just became our base of operations for all our San Diego trips (3 times a year). I highly recommend it for the business or family traveler.

« Decent motel, nice surrounding area »

We stayed here for a couple nights dropping off my daughter at SDSU's dorms. The place is quiet, the rooms are plain but clean, the breakfast is simple but it's a meal. If a safe quiet room close to the university is what you desire, this place is fine for a couple nights. Staff is polite and helpful.

« Great Stay for a Work Week Trip »

I traveled to San Diego to conduct business in the City Heights neighborhood the week of July 4th. The Lamplighter is conveniently located on El Cajon Blvd. near San Diego State University and many of the agencies I was visiting during my trip. The room was very clean and included a kitchenette, which was wonderful. The kitchenette was stocked with pots, pans, towels, and a dish-drying rack, along with some dishes. The bed was comfortable. The refrigerator and air-conditioner were rather loud at night, and I ended up turning off the air-conditioner because of the noise. The water pressure was good. The Lamplighter does not provide an abundance of soaps or shampoos, so be sure to pack your own! The grounds are very beautiful and the groundskeepers and hospitality staff were kind and professional. There are many gorgeous roses around the pool and parking lot. Overall, this was a nice place to stay for a work trip and offered some of the comforts of home.

« Clean, convenient, with cozy parking »

We had booked only a room, but got one with a complete, small kitchen--full-sized frig, stove, microwave, sink, full supply of eating and cooking utensils. We were traveling with another family, and their room did not have even a frig. The rooms were clean, and the whole site had beautiful flowers. Parking was tight, not enough for all vehicles and a bit exciting to back up a minivan. Breakfast was very good with a range of choices from pancake waffles, oatmeal, fresh fruit, and more. The motel is on a one-way, busy street.

    « Nice and Convenient »

Stayed one night to attend a private function nearby. Very quick and easy check in; the room was very clean if a little small for a suite. Very convenient parking. Only issue (resolved by phone a day later) was that I was overcharged for the room rate I received by booking online. I didn't check my receipt until I got home and found I had been charged the full rate. The management confirmed my lower, guaranteed rate and made a prompt refund to my credit card.

« Nice Hotel and Friendly Staff »

A the last minute we decided to stay a night on our vacation so we quickly checked hotels in the San Diego area on Trip Advisor. We chose Best Western Lamplighter because of their price and previous reviews. We were very pleased with the conditions of the hotel and their all their staff that we interacted with were very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was good and had a variety of items offered. The room was clean and the only issue we experienced was the sound coming from the other room above us and next to us. It is obvious that Best Western needs to sound proof their rooms as we could hear the person in the room next to us snoring and the person above us urinating into the toilet. You should not be able to hear these types of noises coming from other rooms, I could understand if someone had the sound on their tv extremely loud or they were shouting, but snoring and urinating are not noises that should be heard. It is a shame because this really is a good hotel and they're doing everything right except for that issue, which is a pretty big issue! Hopefully they will address it. If they did fix this issue, I would definitely stay again!

    « Older Yet Clean »

Been a long time since we stayed at a motel. Had a 1st floor "suite". Don't bother with a suite. Not worth the additional money. Motel is definitely in "used" condition and need some remodeling. However, staff was exceptionally nice, room and pool area are very clean. AC could have used a little booster. Parking is at a premium. Does not seems to be enough spaces for the number of rooms...very crowded, especially late at night. No restaurant or lounge on site. Plenty within walking distance. I would stay there again, if I were in a pinch.

    « Disappointed »

Room was clean but small. Towels were not replaced and shower pressure was slight. Breakfast was in a tiny, poorly air-conditioned room (as door was left open). The hotel advertises the breakfast as featuring "many Kosher items" but the only clearly kosher item was the cereal. Otherwise, there was nothing for the kosher consumer. Finally, the pool was full of bugs. Even by the standards of a budget hotel, the Lamplighter Inn failed to meet expectations.

« Big difference between the 2nd floor and the ground floor rooms »

A nice and clean motel, however the difference between the 2nd floor and the first floor is like night and day. Always request the 2nd floor because the room is two foot wider and the ceilings are higher and the noise level is significantly higher on the ground floor. Our first night at the motel was noisy and cramped; the staff was very accommodating and moved us to the second floor for the next four nights and we were very pleased. Breakfast room was small and many times did not have a place to sit.

    « 4: rating for a 2 star hotel »

My standard level of hotel comfort is a Courtyard Marriot. This hotel is a little below that bit not far. Room was clean, beds fairly comfortable but in a tight space. Not bad for two nights, but i wouldn't stay any longer than that. I had a pleasant stay.

« Great Family Place to Stay »

We were pleasantly surprised by this Best Western. We have a family of 6. Our daughters are 21,19,19 and 16 so we need more space then when they were little. At this stage we often have to get two rooms but that is an added cost. Here we were able to get a suite. One room had 2 queen beds with a small closet, TV and DVD player. We did rent a free DVD from the front office our first night which was a fun bonus. The second room in the suite has a pull out couch, a chair, small eating table, TV and DVD player and a small kitchenette complete with pots/pans, dishes, dish rag and towel, and even a small bottle of dish soap. It was very nice to have a full size refrigerator and freezer. The rooms were clean and fairly updated. The only negative is that the pull-out couch could use an update. It would have worked for small children but was a little worn for our adult size children. We simply bought a full size air mattress and left it behind. But that is honestly the only real negative. The pool area was nice and peaceful with all the greenery. We ate out breakfast there in the mornings. Breakfast was the normal complimentary with waffles, muffins, danishes, bagels, oatmeal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs and cold cereal. They did have gluten free Cheerios for those that need to follow a gf diet like our daughter. Drinks were coffee, hot tea options, orange juice and apple juice. The room for eating is quite small but like I said it's nice to sit in the pool area. There is a computer with a printer in the office which worked well for us because we went to the USS Midway and saved money getting tickets online and printing them. We were also able to print our boarding passes before leaving. This Beat Western is right in town but as soon as you pull into the drive it's secluded with plant hedges. We really enjoyed our stay!

    « Updae me please »

refresh the place please, put new beds in, maybe paint, add new pictures, how about just remodel. The restroom had despensers for shampoo/ soap/ conditioner however all were empty, so if you have them up fill them up. add trash bins for restrooms, add softner for towels, they were very hard. Pillows were nice and comfy so a bed to fit that would be great! Old pictures on wall, small TV and coffee maker was old.

« A Quick Stay in San Diego »

We would stay here again! The hotel is centrally located, lots of restaurants, stores, and gas stations nearby. Lovely flowers are planted along the pool/walkways. The rooms are fairly average, but clean and up to date. We were told the pool was heated, but unfortunately we didn't get a feel for that. It didn't stop our kiddos though, they swam until they dropped! They offer free DVD rentals at the front desk. This is great for a relaxing night in! Breakfast was tasty, and well stocked. Overall, a lovely little hotel... if we're in the area again we'll be sure to stay here.

« Would not stay again »

Stayed for two nights Pros Clean, Friendly Staff, Inexpensive, nice pool Fine if you just need a place to crash for the night Cons The musty smell. Possibly due to their policy of turning the air off in the rooms when not in use, but didn't go away during our stay. Breakfast was great but really overcrowded. Many people didn't have a place to sit and returned to their rooms. (get there very early) Neighborhood wasn't a great place to walk and find shopping.

    « Nice staff »

Very welcoming. Responsive to special requests. Very clean and comfortable beds.. Good values easy walk to rite aid or 711 if you forgot anything great freeway access. Rooms in back are very quiet. AC units very effective don't keep turning on and off waking you up. Eco conscious policies.

    « Don't judge a book by its cover. »

So when my colleague sent me accommodations information for an upcoming business trip, I couldn't help but think that our company was starting to penny pinch after having browsed the place online. The setup to me seemed more MOTEL than HOTEL. Outside, at street level, not on the property, was the sweet smell of San Diego. I've never seen so many homeless people in my life as I have in San Diego. The hotel surrounding was nice. The rooms were very, very clean and the beds were really comfortable! The complimentary continental breakfast was quite good. Just enough selection to send you on your way. Plus, they have 24 hour free coffee. The hotel staff were very nice and accommodating. One of them could probably benefit from a fire being lit under his butt, nonetheless, they were all quite friendly. If you arrive at the airport, use the shuttle to the hotel (not the hotel's own-they don't have one) to get there. I paid $59.00 by taxi. They told me that the shuttle is only $25. I'd recommend this place.

    « San Diego Vacation »

The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very clean. Offered a Continental breakfast with Belgian waffles you could make yourself. Had a small pool, very close to San Diego State University, and small restaurants and Drug Stores. Had computers for your flight check in.

    « great stay.....recommend it to all..... »

We enjoyed the stay.....great staff and wonderful clean and comfortable facility. I had just had spinal surgery and needed to rest...the bed was so supportive and comfortable it really helped me to rest. We were there for high school graduation at SDSU and it was close to the school and easy to get to and from freeway too.

« A few days in San Diego »

A nice clean room in a nice location. Had the usual highway noise and a five o'clock AM garbage truck that sounded like an alarm clock, but no major irritations. All equipment in room worked well. Had a two night stay. Breakfast was well stocked. First morning only hot item was boiled eggs but on second morning there was fried eggs and some Mexican item. Carl's Jr. is right there. Parking lot was sufficient.

« Great location for SDSU visitors »

Front desk staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was clean and inviting, though the pillows could have been a bit more comfortable. Good water pressure in the bathroom, though the hot water in the shower seemed to take a while to warm up. Convenient placement of shampoo, conditioner, and body soap dispensers in the shower area - really liked that. Location isn't that convenient for downtown San Diego, but it is in an area that has lots of services nearby - bars, groceries and fast food (... and, unsurprisingly for a college town, a hookah bar!) Beware the parking - it's pretty tight, so if you have anything larger than a typical sedan, be careful maneuvering around. Also - might have just been that we chose to wake up after 9AM, but dang was someone loud outside and should have been muzzled! :-) Otherwise, a good value!

    « Friendly & very clean hotel! »

Room and bathroom were very clean as well as all common areas and pool, this is of utmost importance to me. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Air conditioning unit worked well and cooled the room quickly. Bed and pillows were super comfortable! Would definitely stay here again.

« Our Favorite Place in San Diego »

We have been staying here since our daughter started college at SDSU in 2010. We have had to stayed at other places on a couple occasions when they were full and for a similar price nothing compares to the wonderful friendly staff, always clean rooms, beautiful pool and quiet setting that you find at the Lamplighter Inn every time. We feel like we are family each time we stay with them & they always ask about the rest of our family. We enjoy our complementary breakfast each morning after a great nights sleep. It is a must stop if staying in San Diego!

« Great Value Great Location »

If you are in San Diego for fun and sun I highly recommend the Best Western Lamplighter Inn & Suites at SDSU. The staff is nice and helpful. The 6:00-10:00 breakfast is always fresh, varied, and plentiful. The hotel is centrally located, 5-15 minutes away from most all tourist attractions. If you forgot something, Target, Ross, and Walmart are 5 minutes away. Quiet... the pool is nice... loved my week long stay here.

    « Kudos...once again! »

The Lamplighter is our Inn of choice whenever we visit the San Diego area. It's location is conveniently and centrally located, the staff is friendly, helpful and courteous, the breakfast is as good as a café and the rooms are more than comfortable. The amenities, such as the beautifully landscaped pool area and WIFI add to it's many charms.

    « love this Place »

THis is our second stay here at the lamplighter, we stayed 2 years ago and had such good memories we had to stay again. we are close to the freeways so able to get to downtown and to the wildlife park very easily. so we drove the 1000 miles to come again for 5 days. The grounds are well kept , the rooms are clean , the wifi was great that both my husband and I could both use our computers with no problem, When we check in they saw we were staying for 5 days and upgraded us for no extra charge. it was wonderful, the only difference we saw was the pool was warmer two years ago , but it did not stop us from using it. only 2 things I would change a little warmer on the pool in May and better stations on the tv with a guide as the direct tv did not work well on letting us know what was on. We will be staying again in Sept. we love the place

    « loved it »

this was our second visit we loved it so much two years ago we knew we would stay again. they keep the grounds looking beautiful the pool sits off the road so you have privacy, the only difference from 2 years ago to this year is the pool was warmer 2 years ago but it did not stop us from swimming. we stayed for 5 nights and they upgraded our room on their own. . the only fault I could say is the tv selection would be nice to see more channels but great internet we ran two different lap tops with no problem . We will come again

« Nice place but needs better soundproofing. »

I was in San Diego for a trade show and found the Lamplighter Inn at less than half the price of the major hotels in the downtown. I got a further discount for taking the room which was specially designed as ADA Accessible. The room was very clean and updated with a new bathroom fixtures, shower and sink. I could not find anything that I would call a "yuk" factor since everything appeared spotless. The bed was comfortable and the a/c-heater was modern and reasonably quiet. The sheets blankets and pillows were clean and without any odors. Lighting was adequate. I noticed that the window on the front of the room appeared to be from the 60's and most other rooms in the motel had updated double pane windows. I assume that they haven't yet updated my room. It did not make much difference to have an old window because the parking lot was very quiet and the weather was very mild. The door seemed a little old with a little light getting in around it. The entry lock on the outside of the door is a very modern card access system so I felt that access to the room was secure. I thought that the free "continental breakfast" was very good. The breakfast offered make-it-yourself waffles, pastries, cereal, toast, hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt, decent coffee and juices and more. Everything in the breakfast room was clean and all the food was fresh. There was helpful staff in the breakfast room that was constantly cleaning up guest spills and answering questions such as how to use the waffle maker. There were free copies of USA Today available, though it seems that everyone was either watching the breakfast room TV or focused on their smartphone and not reading the newspaper. The location of the motel is somewhat older and is not located in an "upscale" neighborhood. I felt relatively safe in the motel and motel grounds but did not venture out on foot. The motel has free parking which is nice since some of the larger hotels charge for parking per day. My biggest problem with the motel is that my room was not very soundproof. I needed to get to sleep early in order to get up early. I could hear the TV in the next room as well as people talking in a normal tone of voice to each other. I could not make out their exact words but the noise from the next rooms kept me awake for awhile. Fortunately, they were not really noisy neighbors or I feel that I would never have fallen asleep. The motel is close to SDSU and is a relatively easy drive to Qualcomm Stadium and the Convention Center. The drive time to the downtown was less than 20 minutes even in morning commute traffic. I would consider returning to Lamplighter Inn in the future since it has a lot going for it with good prices. I would just hope that future neighbors keep the noise level down.

« Great location for SDSU »

Older but well-maintained property with nice landscaping. Comfortable bed. Tight parking. Small, pleasant lobby. Small breakfast room with adequate breakfast included in price. No exercise room. Have stayed at this property numerous times while our child attended SDSU. Easy walk to campus (about a mile) to avoid traffic/parking problems on campus. Prices vary according to campus activities (much higher at school opening/closing).

    « Convenient location »

We've stayed here several times, it's near the college and it's easy to get anywhere in San Diego from here. The staff is friendly and helpful, the rooms are nice and clean, and the bed comfortable. I love the Terra Pure Green Tea soaps & lotion, nice smell. The breakfast was a good variety of fruit, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, oatmeal, 3 kinds of dry cereal, muffins, waffles, breads and fruit. We stayed 6 nights, so the variety was appreciated! The Wi-Fi was a little unpredictable, cutting off or slowing down during the heavy use hours - early evening mostly, but it was fine the rest of the time. We'll stay here again.

    « n/a »

best western is my favorite hotel, I have been staying in same one for the last 2 years, they have great service, great front desk and receptionist, vey nice and friendly general manager. great room service and food service. with no hesitate I highly recommend you to chose the best western as your first choice hotel.

    « Stinky sink »

After a seven hour drive we just needed an overnight stay. I booked this based on the reviews and the proximity to SDSU. According to the reviews it seemed great but, I don't think so. As I entered the room I could smell musty moldy old hotelish something... I remember my first thought was that we would all be smelling like this hotel by the time we leave. Everything was eh. Anyway, we needed to rest before the concert which is why I didn't complain to the manager. After about an hour or two we began to get ready for our event. I went to bush my teeth and almost threw up! As I leaned over the sink I could smell rotten awful disgusting drain. We were on a time limit and out the door so again I had no time to complain. I wondered if we just got a bad room or all the reviews were inaccurate. Should we have had to stay another day I would have not slept in that room again! We got back to the room by midnight and left by 8. The good part was check-in. Simple and friendly even through the remodeling and the pool being done.

    « Overall rating - excellant »

We chose this lodging because of it location close to UCSD. We were treated very well by the staff there. They were helpful with directions and recommending restaurants etc. Our room was spotless and inviting and the grounds were nicely landscaped and spotless. Overall the experience was excellant and would book again.

    « Good experience »

This is a nice, simple hotel. Good location with easy access to the big roads. The staff is friendly and my room was a good size, clean, and quiet. The breakfast is fairly simple but adequate. The breakfast room is small though and one day there was nowhere to sit. Overall this hotel is good value with complimentary WiFi, parking, and breakfast, along with a heated pool. I'd stay here again.

« Great Place to stay in San Diego area »

Nice clean hotel in outskirts of San Diego. All employees were wonderful and more than willing to give suggestions about things we might see. They really knew the area. Seems to be a wonderful family hotel

« Well tended, clean, friendly »

I want to give a shout out to Evelyn at the front desk. I made a reservation at the last minute when I left a hotel I hated. She gave me the last ground floor room and made sure everything was awesome for my stay. Super friendly and exactly what I needed. Don't be worried when you see that this is in a university area. This just meant there were lots of affordable restaurants in the area. Nice job!

« Great Potential - missed the mark »

The family suites are a perfect arrangement for our family. We stayed at this location a year ago and had some maintenance issues, but decided to stay again this year. The staff and housekeeping have resort level hospitality skills. The landscaping is well maintained and exterior is neat and tidy. The location is a little sketchy. Surrounded by many smoke shops and tattoo shops, I wouldn't feel comfortable walking the neighborhood at night. The parking lot is a tight fit. Difficult to park in and not enough spaces. However this location is one mile from the tournament we compete in every year and easy access to SD activities. However the room interiors are needing full renovation. The room we stayed in on this trip had had some kitchen renovation - but the rest of the room was not habitable. There was mold growing on the wallpaper. (The moldy section was replaced during our stay.) The sleeper sofa was held together with tie wraps. The fabric was stained with use. Our room was next to the laundry facilities (which were clean and worked very well) and we could hear the arcade game in our room through the night. We checked out early. Michelle was truly concerned about our stay and did what she was able to do to make things right. Not sure if I will give this location a third shot.

« Snug harbor in a storm (literally) »

Arrived in SD at twilight in the middle of a raging wind and rain storm just before Christmas. We had no reservations and trolled several places before settling on the Lamplighter. Luck was definitely with us. Older facility, but nicely kept. Friendly and helpful staff even helped us get oriented on a map when it was clear our GPS was subpar. Dreary breakfast room, but a nice meal nevertheless. Good all 'round.

« Good hotel, nice prized »

This is a good hotel at a central location. It looks nice from the outside with flowers and a nice pool. Rooms are spacius, breakfast is ok. The ladies at the front desk are very helpfull. So this hotel is a excellent choice if your are planning to stay in San Diego.

« Great Place to Stay »

Nice hotel that is comfortable and quiet. Breakfast was well stocked and staff was friendly and helpful. For the price and convenience, the hotel was well worth it. They were able to accommodate us with three rooms next to each other. The rooms were cleaned and well maintained.

    « Great Facility »

The Lamplighter is maintained in an excellent manner and the landscaping is beautifully done. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I would rate this facility excellent except that the breakfast facility is totally inadequate. It is to small to accommodate the guest. I understand that they intend to remodel and expand the area which is defiantly needed. If I am in San Diego again I will defiantly stay at the Lamplighter.

« We Will Be Return Guests »

This is a very homey hotel. The landscaping is beautiful. The rooms are plenty spacious. Our first room had an upholstered chair and ottoman which was very comfortable. Our next visit had a sofa, upholstered chair and coffee table. The beds were very comfortable. Both rooms had the sink outside the shower area. The rooms looked freshly painted and the carpeting like new. They were the cleanest rooms ever. Each room had a nice desk and chair and flat screen TV. There really is nothing I could complain about. The rooms are away from the road and were very quiet at night. It is an older building and 2 story. Request a first floor room if you can not do stairs with your luggage. There is free parking right in front of your room. A light breakfast is available. It not only was a lovely place to stay, but a terrific value. San Diego, Mission Valley and Old Town attractions are only minutes away.

« A convenient place close to SDSU »

Quiet hotel, really close to SDSU. The complimentary breakfast is great and everybody there was nice and helpful. This was the second time I stayed at the Lamplighter and definitely if I have to fly back to San Diego I will return.

    « Price »

We like staying with this hotel because we earn points and we travel a bit thur out the year, so its nice to be able to do so. The convenience of this option helps when traveling with little one due to the fact it makes for easier check in.

    « NIce »

Nice Hotel close to the college and arena. Close to Restaurants. Customer service is great, breakfast is awesome, but the rooms smelled a bit due to moisture in the rooms and in the carpet. Overall a decent hotel.

« Great one night stay »

My experience was consistent with the great reviews of this hotel that I had read in Trip Advisor. I took a mini-suite with a king bed. Fabulous. Great help on local directions from the staff at check in. I arrived late and needed a quiet room and a chance to rest. I got all that I could ask for. Clean, well appointed room, good wifi, nice bath facilities. It is an extremely well maintained property, especially considering how old it is. I chose this hotel because I was attending a meeting as San Diego State University, which is just 10 minutes away. This hotel was much more convenient for this purpose than the many others that are located on Hotel Circle. Unlike those large chain hotels, this one was small, friendly, and had a great personality. I will remember it if I return to the University for another visit.

« Excellent choice for the area »

My husband & i needed 3 nights in a hotel closest to Lemon Grove to visit with family. I checked reviews of hotels in the area and settled on Best Western. it was a very good choice. the room was clean, king bed was comfortable, we both slept very well! breakfast served between 6-10 am, great choices. the dining area was small~ but i brought it back to our room.

    « A place to sleep »

clean, efficient, good breakfast, but area is a little sketchy. internet is slow. bed is comfortable. quiet except for rattling pipes. near college campus. Restaurant across street was good. (Dirty Bird).

    « Comfortable Stay! »

Did not really know where in the San Diego area we were staying at but this was a pleasant surprise. A family memorial we were attending was right next door. Staff was very helpful in giving us directions to restaurants, beaches and attractions in the area. Made our visit very comfortable and welcoming.

    « Very pleasant »

If you are looking to stay in the La Mesa / College area, this is an excellent choice. The rooms are clean and relatively quiet. The young lady who checked us in was very pleasant. Nice pool. Free wifi. I thought the breakfast was just right. In addition to cereal and pastries, they had a waffle iron for fresh waffles and a big crock pot of steel cut oatmeal (not the packets of freeze dried oatmeal you normally see). We travel to San Diego frequently to visit family, and between El Cajon Blvd and University Ave, this is one of our two favorite spots. Will definitely return.

    « Comfortable & Convient »

spent 3 nights. great quiet location. close to anything you want to see in the entire area yet not touristy. reasonably priced. has free breakfast but the breakfast is crowded and noisy. computer is available.

« Good room; questionable breakfast »

I stayed in a suite, so I had a kitchen, living room, and bedroom. The room was clean and everything was in good condition. They offer a breakfast and the first day we went and the waffle machine was broken. There were no eggs or meat or fresh fruit. Let's just say that it was minimal. The next morning, the breakfast room was closed without a posting as to why. It's good value and was a convenient location to my work in El Cajon. I recommend it if one doesn't want breakfast included.

    « Didappointing »

The hotel is a bit away from most San Diego attractions, about 20-25 minutes with no traffic. Location suited us fine since we spent both our days out and just slept there. It isn't as cute or kept up as it looks on the website's pictures. It was clean though and staff was very friendly. We had a microwave but no little fridge. Room and bathroom were a bit dated/ carpet worn. Nothing special here. Adequate t wouldn't really recommend I guess.

« Oasis in La Mesa »

Older motel but well maintained. This is not a glitzy resort but a cozy and comfortable option in an area convenient to freeway & most attractions. The grounds are lovely, filled with flowers & greenery; nice little pool area where you can gather to enjoy the weather & pool was heated so even if weather is cool you can still enjoy a dip. There is no elevator but the desk clerk offered help with luggage. We had a suite with full kitchen and a bedroom that could be closed off from the living area which is ideal for us (I'm an early riser, hubby likes to sleep in). Your family/friends in La Mesa/San Diego may furrow their eyebrows with concern when you tell them you are staying on El Cajon Blvd but this area is undergoing gentrification and is quite spiffed up. There are restaurants and a grocery store nearby and downtown La Mesa has undergone quite a face lift. Staff are friendly & helpful.

    « Great Stay »

We went for the weekend to see Jeff Dunham and picked Best Western because it was close to the venue. Great decision. Everyone was pleasant and very helpful. Hotel was great..Swimming was heated which was a plus.

    « Great Value »

I recently stayed at the Lamplighter to attend Explore SDSU with my daughter. We also stayed in the summer when we toured the campus. Both times the room was clean, comfortable and relatively quiet. As mentioned when you look the hotel up, it is an older establishment but it has most of the amenities one needs for a weekend or overnight stay. There is a heated pool, small fridge, microwave, coffee maker and breakfast (toast, bagels, waffles, yogurt, etc.) For us, it was very convenient because of the proximity to campus. There is a fabulous sushi place within walking distance. It's a great value for a reasonable price!

    « Nice »

I gave 5 stars because overall our stay was great. They upgraded our room from a standard king to a suite which was nice of them to do. The only downside is that the parking lot is small so it gets filled up quickly. The area is near a University so there can be a bit of traffic but not major. I would recommend staying here.

« Good for what it was... »

The room was clean and the staff pleasant. Not the greatest looking area but it serves it's purpose of being a place to lay your head. It's located 20 minutes from the airport which was nice. The walls are paper-thin so if you have noisy neighbors, you'll hear them. Overall, like I said, it served it's purpose.

    « Excellent hotel »

Very Friendly and helpful front desk. Excellent Housekeeping team. My rooms were very clean. They have free parking on site, free wifi, free breakfast ( the breakfast room was VERY small) My first night was terrible though. I had a King room on the ground floor right next to the parking. Impossible to sleep. The next 9 nights, they changed my room to second floor. A Queen room with complete kitchenette, like an apartment. It was GREAT. Less noise and very comfortable. Very clean. The location of this hotel was perfect for those who have children or friends at SDSU. There were lots of restaurants ( american and exotic ones) shops, super markets, pubs hairand nails salons, fitness clubs etc etc. They were really not expensive. My son who attends SDSU lives in a condo just 5 minutes walk from this hotel where there is an outdoor swimming pool too.

    « Comfortable Stay »

This hotel has lots of perks...breakfast, internet, in room coffee, pool and pets accepted. The rooms are clean, comfortable and welcoming. The hotel staff is friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay again. In fact, this is our 'go to' Hotel when in the area.

« Hotel stay at the Lamplighter Inn »

We required a few days away from our house because of fumigation and this hotel is up the street, We have passed it for over many years are were extremely glad we picked it. Everything was spotless, staff was very helpful and the grounds are beautifully landscaped.

« Good value, comfortable beds. »

We stayed here to be close to our son who lives near San Diego State University. The breakfast that comes with the room is pretty substantial even though it's called a continental breakfast. The beds are very comfortable!

« seight seeing in our hot rods »

we stayed here as a group of classic car folks , The staff is great and while the motel has some age , everything was clean , fresh , and all our rooms spotless ,great breakfast ,.A great hidden gem of a spot... not too far from midway and harbor tour and old town , about 10 miles ,,

    « Excellent hotel »

This is a very good hotel, with a professional and friendly staff, large and very clean rooms, good breakfast and a nice pool. Location was perfect for us, close to highway, but still quiet at night. Parking was always available and close to our room.

    « Get away weekend »

The hotel is in a decent area in land from the harbor (20 minutes) but well worth the effort and time. It is close to the University and has a few good family restaurants near by. The area is surprisingly quit and the pool is highly refreshing. I would absolutely recommend this hotel.

    « Great hotel »

Honestly don't have a single bad thing to say. Great, friendly staff. Wonderful completely breakfast. Clean room, comfortable bed. Would definitely stay there again. Close drive to the college. It was myself and my daughter and we felt 100% safe.

« Great staff, great value »

Best Western lamplighter is an older hotel but very well cared for. it's to fancy but the staff keep it very clean and they area tentative to the needs and comfort other guests. it felt like they took extra effort to reach out to us and that us like family.

    « Excellent Stay »

The receptionist was extremely helpful at check-in. Found the room to be large and comfortable. Bed very soft and comfortable. Received suggestions for local attractions, including driving directions. Complimentary breakfast was good.

    « pleasant visit »

Heated pool and complimentary breakfast were perks of the hotel. Not to far from area sites as well as the ratings from other visitors made this our choice of hotel and we were not let down. The staff replaced a broken DVR (complimentary movie rentals) and were able to provide an ice pack for my spouse. Friendly staff and accommodating.

« Excellent place to stay near SDSU »

Hotel is very clean. Our room was on the second floor and there was no elevator, so when I expressed some concern about hauling a 50 lb bag up the stairs, the person checking me in graciously offered to carry it up to our room. Breakfast was decent. Not as extensive as an Embassy Suites, but better than others claiming to have breakfast. Good restaurants within walking distance.

« Service wins the day »

Every member of the staff went out of their way to ensure our comfort, satisfaction, and unique needs. The family suite was ideal, including 2 Queen beds, a pull out sofa, and a kitchen with microwave and full size fridge. On site parking is included, as is a free breakfast room with bagels, make your own waffles, yogurts, and fruit

    « business stay »

nice hotel - more of a motel, but still comfortable. Quiet. Parking is a little small but in San Diego that's usually the case. The beds were very comfortable and clean. I would definitely stay here again. If there were a "Motel" classification, it'd give it a 5 Star Motel rating.

    « Aged rest. »

As seniors, we desire a quiet pleasant location. This hotel fulfilled these requirements. The room was adequately large, the bed was comfortable and the overall atmosphere was relaxing. Had this been a little warmer time of year, we would have used the heated swimming pool.

    « Passing through »

After searching for reasonable lodging near airport, I found this gem about 15 (by car). Nice, clean, quiet hotel near SD University. Room include free breakfast, although a bit skimpy, but better than others. FREE PARKING! Lots of restaurants, bars, shops within walking distance. I'll certainly stay here on future SD trips.

    « Convience and friendliness »

Staff are always friendly and accommodating. The hotel is convenient to the areas we like to visit while in the San Diego area. The rooms are well maintained and clean. Have not experienced any real problems or issues in any of out stays at this hotel.

    « another great stay »

I've been staying at this hotel since my son began attending SDSU in 2012. I visit at least 3 times a year. The hotel is consistently clean and the staff is exceptionally courteous and kind. The breakfast is a great value and it is so convenient to campus and events (like graduation), that I think it's worth it's pretty reasonable price.

« Very Nice Old School Graciousness. »

The facility and Staff are top notch. Can't say enough nice things about the Front Office Manager, Gilda Prado! The grounds are well maintained and the rates are reasonable. Zero Road noise. I asked that upon our arrival, my daughter would have a welcome home fruit basket waiting for her after being overseas in the U.S. Military. Wonderful basket and an unexpected welcome home card were waiting for her upon check-in. Nicely done, Folks. I will definitely use this location again.

« Clean suite good price »

Nice suite and very reasonable price. Close to good restaurants. Couch folded out for girls. Queen bed comfortable. Bathroom small but updated. Adorable kitchen with stove and fridge. Walked need door to Tokyo for dinner. Fun spot. Good family hotel. Breakfast 6am to 10am

    « Nice Place »

Our experience here was very good. The staff were helpful and friendly. The room was clean. I expected it to hear more road noise as it is located on a busy street but was pleasantly surprised. The breakfast was nicely presented with a good selection (waffles, oatmeal, toast, bagels, cold cereal, muffins, Danish, coffee, tea, orange juice, apple juice). There are a lot of restaurant options in the area. It was easy to get to from the airport.

« Very Clean, Great location, Friendly Staff »

Our experience at the hotel was great. Clean facility, next to San Diego State University so there were a lot of eating choices. The staff was friendly. Would recommend. Having access to a kitchen was great. The kitchen was not fully stocked but we were lucky we brought the essentials we needed.

    « Nice place »

we chose this hotel because it was located close to our family. It was very easy to get to. There are a lot of restaurants in the area. The breakfast was very good. The room was clean and comfortable. The desk staff and breakfast room staff was very friendly.

« Dog friendly and good value »

Found the value to be great at Lamplighter - rooms were big enough for us and both our large dogs - have small dog area for "dog stuff' but bags are provided. Super front desk staff - thanks, ladies. Very decent breakfast to start our day. Got a great recommendation for supper - across the street at the Mediterranean restaurant - great food at a very good price. Found great dog park - Ocean Beach off lease park with loads of beach and water for our dogs and the other 70 or so dogs who were there - love this city and all it's amenities!!! Had a lovely park right behind the hotel as well.

    « Surprisingly Cleaned »

Whenever I checked in a hotel, I cleaned the pole of the closet and some other places, such as the desk and table in the room. This hotel was always cleaned. There was neither dust nor dirt even on the pole of the closet. Further, the pole of the shower curtain was cleaned, too. I even checked on the top of the bed board, which was also amazingly cleaned. I think the top of the bed board has somehow dust in many hotels. But this hotel doesn't. Since I'm not tall enough to reach the top of the door to the bathroom, I assume it should be cleaned, too.

« Great Location and Hotel »

We've stayed at a lot of Best Westerns since the early 70s, and this one ranks in our top 5. The hotel is loaded with upgrades and updating; the room was large and comfortable; and staff was friendly and efficient. When we return to San Diego, we'll choose this Best Western, for sure!

    « very good »

I stayed at this hotel several times and every time I've been here I had gotten the best service. every time I've been here had been with different people as friends, family and they had like the hotel very much. I haven't get not even one complain instead I just got compliments. I highly recommended this hotel Cecilia.

    « Should be renewed. »

Just jumped in for a night on our way but it was not the place we would like to remember. Everything looked old and used, so it did not look clean. When put the heating on it made more (awful) smell than warm.

    « Was disappointed »

Hotel is very mediocre though rooms are spacious and bathroom clean . Breakfast area very shabby and tables not clean at all . very regular breakfast nothing exciting. Cereal choice very poor and would surely recommend to see other options . There are plenty of hotels around the area . Pl see other hotels

« Great place to stay! »

when we visit our son we always stay at this hotel because it's clean, comfortable, and we like the breakfast choices. This hotel really has everything that you need for a nice comfortable stay. It's also less than 4 miles from where our son lives.

    « True Satisfaction »

Enjoyed my stay at this Best Western as I have at other Best Westerns. Best Western does not disappoint and continues to offer pleasant and reasonable stays. I have always been able to find a Best Western near my ultimate location and will stay true to this very accommodating hotel chain.

« Best stop over for snowbirds »

So my grandmother needed another place to stay before going home. Just getting dropped off from the Airport, the staff helped her with baggage to the office as well as to the room. The room she got was like a little cottage off from the rest of the hotel. It was spacious with a kitchenette and was dog friendly. Great price for the size of the room. Nice landscaping along the walkway makes it feel more like a home . She only stayed the one night because we were unsure of the hotel experience, but now that we know, she'll plan a longer stay to enjoy the sights of San Diego with us. Easy driving access from 70th st to the freeway or straight down El Cajon Blvd from the 8.

« Excellent value, Thoughtful staff, Perfect service »

The most outstanding feature of the hotel by far was the exceptionally professional, friendly and courteous staff who attended to special needs with a high level of courtesy and sensitivity. The value was excellent.

« Great stay for a great price »

Great stay. Hotel staff from the manager down were all very helpful and friendly. Good value hotel and amenities. Location was good and good access to freeways. Good parking. Good neighborhood. Highly recommended.

« Excellent facility at a great price! »

Outstanding staff and facility! well-maintained property and the amenities were outstanding, we will stay here again. We highly recommend the Lamplighter, model facility for the Best Western brand. Great area near SDSU with entertainment and excellent restaurants.

    « Close to SDSU »

We would definitely return to this hotel. It suited our purposes because we wanted to be close to SDSU without a lot of driving. We had stayed at a place on El Cajon before and did not like the area at all, but this section of El Cajon was much better.

« Very nice hotel close to San Diego »

This is an extremely clean and nice hotel. Staff is very helpful and friendly. Would return in a heartbeat. Will stay there if I go to San Diego Good central and convenient location less than five minutes from I-8.

    « Concsistently good »

We have stayed at this hotel many times over the years while visiting our family in San Diego, and it's always excellent, with a caring staff and nice rooms. We especially like the mini-suite, which gives us some extra space as well as a fridge and microwave, and we enjoy the pool, too.

    « Excellent Hotel »

This hotel was better than I expected and the staff were very friendly. It is always a plus when they allow dogs which is a main reason that we chose hotels. We were in the area for an event and it was a prime location. Due to the fact that I work in downtown SD, this will be a nice hotel to stay at if needed. I would recommend it.

« Great Place to Stay!!!! »

Staying here was a pleasure. The room was very clean and the staff was fantastic. Planned on staying here only one night, but ended up booking a second night once we saw the property. the grounds are well taken care of and the breakfast was good. Will definitely stay here again when in the area!!!!

    « Great Hotel »

This is a great option, if you have plans in San Diego. The hotel has everything and is very clean. Staff is very supportive and everything is really nice. The only down is the AC but all of the hotels have a similar system in the area

    « Stellar property »

Overall this property is an outstanding location. Every facet of my stay was above expectations. Friendly, professional and congenial staff! If in the area don't pass up the opportunity to stay and rest awhile. And don't forget your swim attire as the pool is sparkling clean and refreshing.

    « Absolutely great! »

Stayed for 3 nights while visiting SD The place was in great neighborhood, clean and very nice staff. The location is a bit far from the city but for us it was great (had a car) Wifi great, breakfast is very good although small sitting area. Laundry room was in great condition and works flawlessly Would recommend, high value per money

« Short Stay for College Move »

Stayed here twice during our daughters move for college. Both times the room was clean, and the bed, pillows and linen were as good as a more luxurious hotel. There was a small pool, but we didn't go to it, and the breakfast was filling if you are good with pastries, waffles, oatmeal, cereals, bagels and toast. This is a great alternative to spending more if you are traveling or need a short stay in San Diego!

    « Wonderful »

We stayed here for a week. The staff was very helpful. The breakfast was delicious. The neighborhood seemed safe, we walked 6 blocks to get something to eat. Lot's of restaurants nearby. The room was clean and quiet. Nice pool. Thank You Best Western!

« Great value, clean, fun and personable »

Wow! You certainly get a lot of 'bang for your bucks'. The location is easy access...the site is clean and well cared for...the room was excellent with internet, micro, fridge and extra pillows...the staff helpful and friendly and they accommodated our dog without 'batting an eye'. The pool area is refreshing and beautifully lit at night. The homemade waffle breakfast and helpful wait staff was an added bonus. We've stayed here before and will again.
