Best Western Plus West Retford Hotel

I have just been treated to an afternoon tea as a birthday treat at The West Retford Hotel and have to say I most certainly would not have another there and will not recommend visiting this venue for the same treat to anyone else. I never write reviews - if I have had a lovely meal I will praise the staff at the time. However this is the 2nd year I have been treated to this and it is still appalling!! This time around I gave who I assumed was the restaurant manager a full and honest critique to pass onto management. Sandwiches - 'plastic' ham and beef of poor quality - thin slices which actially was probably a blessing. No smoked salmon but cream cheese with the sliced cucumber. Also 'cheap' white bread smothered in margarine. No wholemeal bread on offer. No other savouries are offered - ie quiche, scotch eggs, savoury tarts etc. You just get 2 tiers of cheap quality cakes. No sultanas on the scones, no butter - just jam and cream. Not everyone may want jam and cream and would prefer a simple buttered scone - not an option here. There was sum sort of sticky chocolate slice. I couldn't work out if it was fudge cake or not and my friend suggested it may have been a torte. Whatever it was, it was just sticky thick brown sugar on the bottom and you needed to scrape it off the serviette with a knife. They place a meringue/cream swan as the centre piece on the top plate. This is a meal shared by 2 people - who gets the swan?! We ended up cutting it in half to share - but a messy process. Absolute debacle!!! This is a lucrative market. Any restaurant providing a good quality afternoon tea will draw in custom over and over again. Surely as a chain, Best Western could make a decent job of this. The other meals looked tasty and nicely presented. So 'pull your fingers from your butts' and get this sorted properly. A child could have made a better effort than this. You should be ashamed to deliver such an atrocity!!

Well located and at to find with ample car parking. Reception was welcoming and the service throughout our stay was good. Our room was comfortable with all facilities we needed . Breakfast was ok and food in the restaurant varied and reasonably priced. We would use it again .

We had Sunday lunch here today for my Mum's birthday. We didn't mention the birthday to the waitresses but they had overheard us saying happy birthday to mum during the meal and brought out this beautifully decorated dessert for her! The food was great, they were really attentive and more than happy to switch menu items (peppercorn sauce accompanying the chicken to gravy) for my daughter. We'll definitely be back with all the family soon!

Overall experience was good, hotel very dated could do with an upgrade :) stained curtains and the carpets grubby, toaster rubbish for breakfast so slow ha ha. No Coca Cola options at the bar only Pepsi max or Pepsi they have a vending machine but it's out of order/ food only at certain times no 24/7 or room service which would be ideal with a family

Very well located, staff were incredibly professional. Meals out of this world. Very cozy bar with plenty of drinks even a nice selection for non alcoholic drinks. Rooms were spacious with marvellous beds, big toilets aswell. An great experience overall.

Extremely comfortable stay in one of the cottages in the grounds of the main hotel. Situated just a few steps away from the entrance. Very spacious room and bathroom with an entrance hall. Comfortable bed and extremely clean room. Good selection of toiletries and tea/coffee/hot choc and biscuits

This is a really good value hotel to stay at in Retford. The hotel has ample parking and is a very spacious hotel with bar and restaurant. The hotel is split into two building and I am always in the building across from the main hotel ? however it has lovely rooms with generous sized bedrooms

Stayed for two nights, room ready on arrival, special needs request was met and advised by Laura that everything ok. Ground floor room clean and tidy bathroom had walk in shower and toiletries, plenty of tea and coffee with kettle and bickies. Orangery restaurant very good with limited but tasty menu and good portions of food, two menus available a set menu or bar menu both with veggy and vegan options. My thanks go to Sally in the restaurant for helping to sort out our dietry needs and giving us an accessable table for our meals. Breakfast choice of continental or full English with generous quantity. Small bar with selection of beers and spirits reasonably priced for a hotel. Small lounge to sit and relax during the day if required.

nice friendly helpful staff and decent room with a very comfy bed food was excellent. On;ly thing that lets the room down is the shroud around the tv. no access for firestick or games consoles if you have the kids with you.

I tried the Best Western Plus for a one night stay over Christmas (visiting family) and it was significantly better than the other hotel I'd tried in Retford (The Elms). The welcome at reception was initially rather cold as the young lady informed me that I was early and rooms would not be available until 3pm. I requested some flexibility, if possible, and after contact with housekeeping a room was available. The room, in a separate building was a good size, comfortable, warm but rather dated. Housekeeping was excellent and everything worked OK. Perhaps TVs could be upgraded soon to larger screens. The bathrooms was spotless and the amenities were good quality. The breakfast (in the main building) comprised a small (very limited) buffet then hot dishes were ordered and brought to the table. The breakfast was decent but not memorable. All in all it was a good stay and I would definitely return.

Second stay here in recent years. Another excellent stay thank you. Lovely people - everyone we spoke to. Spotlessly clean, comfortable and well equipped room and delicious food. Great value for money. Highly recommended.

We received a cheerful and friendly welcome and were registered with no delay. The lack of a lift may deter some but was not an issue for us. The room was spacious and the bed was comfortable. The dining room was large and airy and the food was cooked well by friendly and efficient staff.

Lovely hotel, great staff and quality food. Be aware rooms are not in the main building but an annexe. This is good as minimises noise disturbance if there's a function on, but remember to take a coat or umbrella!

Probably excellent venue for weddings and functions, foods ok but nothing to write about. Lovely old building with outstanding garden areas , was disappointed not to have a pool/spa or gym and could do with more toilet facilities around the lounge and bar area.

Greeted well on arrival, staff very helpful, accommodating & very pleasant. The food is excellent, we didn't have breakfast but after 12 pm the chef was happy to do us eggs on toast (although not on menu), choice of evening meal Very good. The main hotel building is where the lounge, bar & restaurant is but the main hotel is very much geared towards weddings & events. Because of this the hotel bedrooms are located out of the main hotel in a separate purpose building? Having said that the rooms are excellent, beds very comfortable & very clean! We enjoyed our stay as we just wanted to have a good bed & good food for 3 nights & chill. I would recommend this hotel if you're just visiting for a few nights.

Brilliant hotel really clean with polite professional staff all around the hotel, food was really good and nice gardens to sit and relax in rooms very spacious and comfortable if in the area would definitely stay here again the best thing about this hotel like I said is the staff.

The hotel was spotless. The staff were polite caring and helpful at all times. The extensive gardens are beautiful. Just a 15 minute walk from the lovely Majestic theatre and town centre. Will definitely go back!

Fantastic experience from the welcome. All staff engaging and efficient. Beautiful hotel and grounds. No parking issues, easy walk into town. Nice clean room, all usual facilities. Menu and food excellent. Great nights sleep.

This was our first visit but won't be our last. Set in lovely grounds it is a lovely place for a relaxing stay. Peaceful yet close to the town centre. Service and food we ate at the bar was good. Room was also nice and comfortable. Only point I'd make is that having a fairly thick duvet on the bed is not so good in summer. Beds should be made in such a way that you could simp,you've Ashley and duvet thereby giving you a choice. But that apaer we had a .overly stay.

Warm friendly welcome. We had a room in the Georgian building. Nice large room, clean with everything you could wish for, tea, coffee, biscuits, hairdryer, iron and a fan as there is no air conditioning. Very short walk into Retford town and a bonus with free parking. We didn't try the restaurant because we were meeting friends in town each night. If you are in need of a ‘no stairs' room ask for one on the ground floor because there is no lift. Definitely stay again on our next visit to Retford, hopefully next time the sun will shine.

The hotel felt super dated. No AC in rooms despite website claiming such. Internet only worked in reception area and not in the rooms, which are in a separate building. No elevator. The rooms had a weird odor to them and felt super damp. All up, on a family trip, we did not like or enjoy the hotel.

The staff are amazing really helpful the bed is super comfy lots of pillows extremely clean lots of fluffy towels the food is high standard and cater for all allergies the staff were amazing so helpful

The experience in the West Retford Hotel is well above the average for a hotel in this price bracket. The room was spotlessly clean, very well presented and comfortable. A lovely quiet location with well maintained grounds which invite you to take a stroll. Breakfast in the orangery is a bright and relaxed start to the day with excellent service, good quality cooking and with orders being despatched promptly by the kitchen. The bar staff were attentive and efficient.

This hotel is a lovely building with a fantastic garden and very convenient for Retford. For the price it fine but could have been so easily improved with no great effort, mainly in the kitchen. The breakfast buffet was fine until you came to the cooked food - hardly cooked bacon or sausages and lumpy scrambled egg devoid of moisture. The yorkshire and mince sounded like a great lighter meal for the evening but with yorkshire like leather, dried mash and sloppy tasteless mince; not a good choice. The staff are fantastic - so friendly and helpful. Oh, and the room needed a serious freshen up - smelled like an old smoking room that had not had the carpets or curtains cleaned - ever. And a hook fell off the bathroom door. Would have slept better if couldn't hear the guy next door groaning and snoring.

I booked this hotel for an overnight stop between London Stansted airport and Northumberland. It is set in its own grounds in a quiet area on the outskirts of Retford. The bedroom was a good size with a small seating area and the bathroom was roomy. The bed wasn't too hard and very comfortable. Price was good value for money and included breakfast. The only reason for not giving 5* was that both restaurant and room service finish at 21.00 and due to a flight delay I arrived later than that, so unable to have a bar snack or room service. Also my personal red flag was no full fat milk at breakfast.

Everything about my stay was excellent. The room is comfortable and met all my expectations. All the staff are very friendly and willing to help, the food is excellent, the only thing I would like to change would be the menu from week to week.

Imagine not being able to check in on an already paid for basis when arriving at the hotel. The check-in woman was having absolutely none of it, talking over me, and being downright rude. I ended up having to go home. 3 hour round trip for nothing. The next day, my company challenged the hotel about this ordeal, and they were magically able to find the correct info! (Already paid for basis as I said, should of been able to check in!) And they even very kindly let me check in later in the day for the remainder of my booked stay, with not even as much as an apology for the misunderstanding on their part, or to put it quite bluntly, severley messing about the previous night. Thanks guys, absolutely amazing service!

I booked a night here before going to a funeral on the following day. I arrived at 8.15 pm to find that the restaurant closed at 9.00pm but the service there was excellent and the meal fully justified the price of £25 and wine was reasonably priced. My room was large with a king sized bed which was very comfortable. Breakfast was good except for the bacon which had dried out. A lot of the staff here were inexperienced but they were well supervised and all gave very friendly and efficient service. Vegetarians seemed well catered for.

Cold, unclean, cramped ‘cottage' avoid at all costs for £150 for a night I would recommend going to the Best Western at Mount Pleasant just up the road instead this was an absolute shower. Room was dirty and very cold, the heating worked as and when it felt like it, noisy because you are very close to a main road and the staff are not the friendliest people you'll ever come across.

Lovely hotel and pleasant staff. It was very quiet when we we went with only one other table occupied. There were several uncleared tables and the temperature of the room was only just warm. When our tiered stand arrived it didn't look particularly pretty or inviting. Some of the bread was a little stale, mouldy fruit & huge slabs of cake in different sizes on the middle tier. We were given a pot of tea but weren't told if it was refillable & nor was this offered. We asked for cakes to be bagged and were brought some foil & a bag to the table to do it ourselves. I would have expected the plate to be removed & cake returned ready bagged. We felt this was poor value for money & could have been presented in a better way with a bit more imagination & elegance.

When checking in at reception you do expect the person welcoming you to stand up to greet you. Not when it's time to make your payment. No mention about breakfast times. Was offered to book a table in the restaurant for dinner. On entering the room, it was dark, not very welcoming. Walls are in need of a lick of paint. The coving above the curtains was water stained, and overall looked in very poor condition. The stool by the desk had come away from its base on one side. On entering the toilet. I lifted the lid and the toilet seat was covered in urine stains, which I have taken a picture of, and human hair. The glass shower door and bath hadn't been cleaned either. I telephoned reception and within 10 minutes the manager had arrived to clean it. Housekeeping was blamed, and when I mentioned why was a room check not done, despite the kettle being 1/4 full and the glasses dirty, she laughed it off, cleaned the bathroom and said could she offer me a bottle of wine or something, after all it is Christmas. I wasn't after anything, just somewhere clean and warm to sleep, this did not meet my expectations. This has nothing to do with what time of the year it is, these rooms are £105 without breakfast, and I was upgraded. This room says nothing to me about being anything Executive. On entering the bar, no staff present. Everyone seemed to be running around like headless chickens as there was a coach load of customers coming for dinner in the restaurant. The food was average. Cutlery dirty, food checks completed by staff, which was a positive. I've been very lucky to have travelled the world extensively. So I am speaking from my own personal experience and standards. It will be very interesting to see what The Manager comes back with looking at all the other reviews. And after reading them it seems like the customer is never correct. Customer always first, then Company.

Had a lovely hot meal in restaurant today. Food was delicious and well presented. It's a shame the servers are letting the restaurant down! Main course arrived nice and hot, servers disappeared! No cranberry sauce on table we were not asked if we wanted any, we went looking for servers, not to be found. We saw sauce in pots on side table so got our own. Desserts ordered and delivered, unfortunately the table was not set up with any dessert spoons, we each had to ask one by one for a spoon that they took their time bringing. Two young people serving, no evidence after 1.30 of any senior until 2.15. Think they have a training issue! The service did not detract from the ambience and enjoyment of the meal.

Stayed for one night with a small group of friends. Great position for town centre and plenty of parking. The gardens are lovely. Lovely evening meal and a nice breakfast. Staff were good . Now the down side . First 3 in our group got rooms in the cottages. Our room was next to the road and we never slept all night. The radiator didn't work in the bathroom, making it very cold . We learnt that the other 3 in our party had rooms in the annex the other side of hotel , on viewing their rooms , it was like another hotel , very luxurious, very quite and lots of space . Our room was very clean but not to the standard of our friends. Would stay again but not in the cottages

Good location, nice staff and a really comfy bed. The breakfast was pleasant without being over the top, parking was easy and gave us a really good starting point for visiting the surrounding areas. A pleasure to stay

The last time I stayed here was on our wedding night thirty seven years ago. Yes things have changed, most notably staff, and the lack of training they receive. To be fair nowadays , if you've got a pulse , you've got a job. The barman who was on duty at 21.30hrs in the main bar certainly needs training in all aspects of the job. He's basically clueless, and that's not his fault, it's the hotels fault for taking on untrained staff at low rates of pay . I asked for a large Kraken and Diet Coke with lots of ice and a slice of lime in a balloon glass. What could be simpler? Firstly he didn't know what a balloon glass was! I told him it was a gin glass. He said “Oh right”, so he got the gin glass ( balloon glass) and then asked me which gin I would like!!! No I said, I asked for a large Kraken. Then he asked me if I'd like ice !!! Where is this guys head!! I said yes, lots of ice ( which I'd told him earlier) . Then he put a feeble two lumps in the glass!!! …..No, I asked for lots of ice! Finally I got the ice, along with a slice of lemon, when I'd asked for lime!!! Let's face it, you're the number one hotel in Retford. The rooms are of a fair standard, the dining room is great, the bar area is cosy, but the staff just look as if they want to end their shift and go home!! Just do something about it, and please don't defend this review.

What a lovely characterful hotel. A warm reception from the staff on arrival put us at ease straight away. We were in a executive room in the Georgian house, separate to the main building, with plenty of parking. We stayed in room 41 which looked out onto a grassed area, which was nice and private. The room was lovely. Warm, cosy and spotlessly clean. We loved the quality furniture, character old windows and comfy sofa. Also appreciated the luxury soft furnishings. The bathroom also had character, instead of the usual generic white tiles you get at other hotels. We had a great night's sleep also as the bed was really comfortable. Breakfast was relaxing and being served at the table a nice treat. A lovely selection of continental items and the cooked full English was quality, nicely presented and piping hot. Really enjoyed. Have to say the staff are a credit to this hotel. Everyone was cheerful and friendly, and looked very smartly dressed. We feel, unlike other hotels, BW Retford has come out of covid very well and offers its customers a great experience. Well worth the money. We would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxed break and will definitely use again in the future. Thankyou.

This is a lovely old hotel with friendly, helpful staff and the room was clean and comfortable. The food was fantastic and they havd a good selection of reasonably priced drinks. The steak and chips was the best I've had in a long time.

3 of us had the midweek lunch today 10th Oct. 2 of us had the turkey and 1 had salmon which we all enjoyed. We had 3 different deserts and whilst all were very nice felt that the portion size of the Lemon Tart could be increased. Overall an enjoyable visit and we would return.

Hotel taken over for a wedding. No separate lounge/bar facilities for other guests. Our room was dark even with the lights on which was depressing. When staying in a hotel I enjoy having a bar drink with a comfortable chair but the wedding guests completely took over. Noisy disco that could be heard in the bedroom until very late in the evening. The same awful piped music in all public rooms, including the restaurant. Put me off hotels altogether. That said, the food was excellent.

Wow what an amazing time me and my husband had marrying at the west Retford hotel. The food was beautiful and room stunning. All staff were welcoming and friendly. we couldn't have asked for a nicer day! A*

Quiet and lovely place. room are clean and efficient, convenient store not far. Can get quite busy at times. This is a good value hotel. I did not see any lifts? but maybe you have to ask at the reception. Only thing is if you are not in the main building during rain you may get wet going to the bar and restaurant

Afternoon tea was served in a corporate souless dining room. There was a decent selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones, but it tasted bulk catering rather than homemade. Although ok, we were rather disappointed with the experience.

If I could I'd have gone 2.5, because the facilities and room were good, it was the morning staff that let the place down. We attended a wedding on Friday 30th, and stayed over. Everything was ok until the next morning when the staff in the corridor were shouting from one end to the other having full loud conversations, at around 8:30/9am. We had to go out and ask them to be quiet, but by that time we were already awoken. We don't get much time away from our kids, but when we do we'd like to be able to enjoy a nice relaxing atmosphere, and a lie in. The day was brilliant, but the morning after was twice as bad as any hangover I might have encounter, due to the staff.

First visit and stayed in an Executive Room in separate building. Room was spacious and bathroom OK. House keeping was very good. Room card was a constant pain not working which meant a lengthy walk to reception. Food and service were good apart from tea was hardly hot. Glad I stayed in extension as a wedding was on.

Pleasant stay at the hotel. Most staff very friendly. Avoid the restaurant. Food served cold on a cold plate. Informed the waitress who ignored me and just removed the plate. This let the hotel and the rest of the staff down. We would stay there again but would never waste our money on dining there.

Great location for us as we visit family in the area regularly. Lovely room and bathroom. Beautiful grounds and good value. We have stayed in other hotels in the area but so far this has been the best for the price charged.

Had a great one night stay at this hotel. The hotel is located 2-3 minute drive outside Retford town centre and is in a good location for access to shops, restaurants and bars close by. We had booked this stay last minute after being let down by another hotel that we had booked before embarking on our trip and was in need of an accessible room with walk-in shower in a nice, clean hotel, in a comfortable and quiet location - The West Retford Hotel certainly delivered on those requirements. Special thanks to ‘Caroline' who greeted us on arrival with a warm welcome and a big smile, very comforting after a long day of travelling around, as well as making sure that our needs were catered for beforehand and during our stay. Recommended and good value for money.

Stayed here for a couple of nights while in Retford. Hotel is set in some lovely grounds with well appointed rooms. Food was well prepared and presented. Staff helpful without being over bearing. Plenty of free car parking.

Our daughter has just had her wedding at the West Retford Hotel and we personally could not fault any aspect of the venue or the arrangements. The ambiance of the hotel, grounds and the function room are of a very high standard and everything appears to be well maintained. The meal at the reception was piping hot, served efficiently by some very young staff and very tasty. A number of our friends who were guests at the wedding were all very complimentary and impressed by the hotel. Being a very hot day, many guests chose to sit outside in the evening and chat rather than go to the disco. From a purely personal perspective I would have been happier if the disco volume had been set just slightly lower. My wife and I stayed overnight at the hotel in a family room with two of our grandchildren. The accommodation block is slightly away from the main hotel and as a result is nice and quiet. The room was nice, clean, spacious and had everything we needed. Although booked as part of the wedding package, whilst on a par with other hotels of a similar nature, the room price was not really much of a bargain. One disappointment, although we were the bride's parents and had been responsible for some large payments to the hotel, we were charged £20 extra to check-in to the room at 12 0'clock rather than the normal later time. The breakfast buffet had everything we needed and was hot and tasty. Anyone considering a stay or a wedding at the West Retford Hotel should not be disappointed if their experience is similar to ours

Definitely will be going back there every thing was perfect and the staff were very nice and helpful thanks again a great night. The room was very clean The service in the restaurant was very good and the food well just give it a try.

We went for a wedding stupidly on my part I left my brand new t-shirt on the back of the chair and my partner forgot to pick it up after I asked her too but she never the idiot! So when we got home and found out it wasn't with us we immediately rang the hotel, but to our surprise we found the cleaners are thief's and apparently no top was ever there? To be fair the receptionist did try help us by looking for it without asking for the colour size or even the room number it was left in it took her all of 5 seconds to check! So yeh if you stay here don't leave anything because you won't get it back! We was actually going to book our wedding here but now they have no chance nowit!!!

Great stay at Retford Best Western. Room was clean and well stocked and breakfast was served quickly and was very tasty. Great value for money and if the weather is good the gardens are superb. Beware that sound travels if you're in the 'cottages', as the people in the room below us could hear our conversations word for word ! Overall excellent though and would stay again.

My mum and I had dinner on the patio. Great menu choices, absolutely delightful staff, tasty food (a perfectly cooked steak), lovely views, and reasonably priced. There's a chilled-out vibe here. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend - we will be back!

I've just been to my cousins wedding here on July 2nd 2022. Beautiful grounds, beautiful place and the food was lovely. We stayed the night in the Georgian house, the room was lovely the bed was comfy. All the staff we encountered were very friendly. Couldn't fault it thanks

A nice clean room, comfortable bed. Friendly staff. Great breakfast. I never do reviews but felt I had to!!!! I left two phone chargers in the room. I thought oh well no big deal, my own fault and didn't bother calling the hotel. Today, 10 day's later they've been posted back to me. Whatever person or people did this a massive thank you!!!!!

Lovely peaceful setting with friendly staff. Room spotlessly clean but dated - Larger than normal. Food good at both the bar and breakfast. Just a bit 1990's and geared more to wedding guests than business travellers

This hotel was a perfect location for a wedding that was held at the rugby club. The food in the restaurant was absolutely outstanding. It felt like fine dining. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms have everything you need. It's excellent value for money. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone

One night in a lovely room that had a huge tv and a rolltop bath in the bedroom. But also had a double walk in shower. The grounds of the hotel have the wow factor and this is a lovely place to stay and I imagine would be perfect for a wedding as so many areas great for photo opportunities.

Everything about this hotel was perfect for us. The grounds are very well kept and the room was beautiful and clean. Food and service in the restaurant were very good both at dinner and breakfast. We will definitely visit this hotel again.

I stayed at this hotel as my friend got married here. It was a fabulous experience from start to finish. The rooms are clean and spacious. The staff are friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble.

Convenient location for Retford town centre. Set in very pleasant grounds. Room in the cottages was comfortable and had everything we needed. Price was very reasonable. Would stay again if in the area again.

I stay in a lot of mid range hotels with work and this surpassed my expectations. The room was spacious, immaculately clean, good temperature, with a big comfy bed and ok pillows. So often pillows are appalling. The bathroom was a little dated but absolutely gleaming. Good range of tea, coffee, biscuits and hot chocolate. Breakfast was great and the evening meal was ok. If you are after a clean comfortable place to stay, I would recommend.

The hotel was lovely and clean, and the staff were pleasant and really helpful, but felt that the food could have been better for a 4* hotel. It seems if you were with a wedding party you got more for breakfast

We celebrated our wedding at the West Retford Hotel at the weekend, I can not recommend a better venue after many failed attempts due to the pandemic, the hotel staff were amazing Pam helped us organise everything each time and was brilliant with everything, the hotel suite was beautiful and clean housekeeping looked after us in the room they were fantastic everybody said how lovely the rooms were. The food was outstanding. A special mention to Toni and Lee who made the day run like clockwork they were both so attentive and really looked after us, all the staff were fantastic. If you are considering the West Retford for your wedding we highly recommend it. Thank you so much for everything. Mr & Mrs Dyson

Just celabrated our wedding here and I can't speak highly enough of this venue, and most of all the staff. Nothing was too much trouble, the staff ran everything so well we did not have to do anything. The food was great, the rooms were nice, and everything was so well organised. Our day was made perfect and much of that was due to how this venue ran it. We would recomend the West Retford hotel for anyone getting married in this area.

We had a beautiful stay! Staff are very welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. Food was outstanding and big portions. The rooms are really warm and spacious. We will definitely return again :)

Unbelievably the heating goes off at night, freezing in the cottage room. Mind you, curtains covered the radiator anyway so not much use! Bathroom heater on a timer, shower if you dare. When it did come on, it brought out the flies - middle of January too! Food okay and bed comfy, but sadly will never stay here again.

We had a three night stay here this was our second time and we will be coming back again the grounds are lovely nice place to walk around in the morning or evening very good selection at breakfast all cooked freshly to order

Stayed over night for the new year fala package. Absolutely superb. Staff friendly food fantastic. Entertainment good.piper and fireworks at midnight made it a very memorable evening . Rooms very comfy. As s group of 8 we all said we will return .

Reception staff were very welcoming and well prepared. Room was very reasonably priced. Room was spotlessly clean and warm and cosy. Restaurant is nice and grounds beautiful. Although this hotel hasn't changed much over the years I would still recommend.

Stayed over at BW in early December, lovely room, clean and spacious with all usual requirements , staff very polite and helpful, I had dinner in the Restaurant, food was well presented and First Class , will return and highly recommend this Hotel.

We enjoyed delicious tasty food and superb friendly service for our family Christmas lunch party, which was decimated by covid, weather, and work emergences down from 44 to 18, with traffic delays too, and the kitchen and service team excelled, with big smiles and without rancour. We will be very happy to return again, :)

Pleasant hotel. Very attractive building and grounds. Ground floor bedroom spacious and comfortable Had a light supper but excellent home made soup. Breakfast very good. Staff helpful and friendly. Good parking facilities.

I stayed a Friday and Saturday night. The room was very clean and comfortable, no complaints. We ate in the lounge on Friday night and the food was very good and good value at 2courses for £20. My disappointment was with the reception staff who could be friendlier and more informative but mainly with breakfast. On both mornings things ran out before 9.30am! Not good!

I booked a Saturday overnight stay with my partner to celebrate my birthday. Check in was efficient and pleasant. We were in an executive room in an annex a short distance from reception. For those with mobility issues, there is no lift to the first floor, although this was not an issue for ourselves. The room was clean and well equipped. Albeit we had to move the larger double bed to plug in the bedside light that was not working. Sadly our disappointment came when we went for our evening meal. We were directed the Orangery Restaurant, which is set out in total contrast to the traditional style of the rest of the hotel. We entered a brightly lit room which bore more resemblance to a works canteen rather than a luxury hotel. Set out with Formica tables and about as much style as could be provided by IKEA. The sad point however was that the food was good, but I guess like many other hospitality establishments these days it suffered from poor service. We had to ask for a wine list, it having not been provided with the food menu. The youngsters working the tables whilst very polite lacked clear organisation and there did not appear to be anyone in charge. We ordered a bottle of wine with the food order…and then waited…. The starters arrived and still no wine. So we asked again. A tray with two glasses appeared on an unstaffed bar. And we waited. Our excellent starters were cleared and eventually just before our mains the wine was delivered with an apology. Again a sign of poor training, the young lad apologised, placed the wine cooler with glasses and bottle on the table and walked away….okay I'll pour our own wine thanks, We chose not to return for breakfast. If you want room only, then not a bad choice. Certainly not a venue for a significant meal.

We have just spent two fabulous days here, celebrating a wedding. The staff were excellent and couldn't do enough for us. A big thank you to you all. The food and service was great. The grounds were beautiful, can't wait to see the photos.

Booked the orangerie for the lunch special and wasn't disappointed. Tables well spaced out, attentive staff and excellent food. Thoroughly enjoyed the salmon with asparagus cream and caramelised orange bread/butter pud. Liked what I saw of the neighbouring table's afternoon tea as well. Nice little touch presented for a special birthday. Will definitely visit again.

Three years ago the food was horrible and the staff not much better. I don't know if there is new management but this time the whole experience was a pleasure. We booked to eat out for two nights and only ate in on the first night but in the event would have been happy to use the restaurant for the second and final nights.

Better than we expected. Very clean rooms, friendly staff, good vegan choices for breakfast, which is still unusual elsewhere. The gardens are beautiful and Victorian? Sunken garden is quiet and full of wildlife.

Very easy to check in, plenty of parking, the room was clean and quiet. Good Wifi. Good location for accessing towns and cities nearby at a fraction of the price. breakfast was extra, there was a small bar area.

Amazing staff service was really good, great hotel, food was amazing also definitely would recommend or stay again. Room was spotless, bathroom was also spotless, shower was good not like some hotels where there's no water pressure to have a good shower, all staff were professional in there approach.

We recently stayed one night as a break in our journey to Scotland.What a lovely place we found. The hotel is a Georgian style property which looks like a great wedding venue. We spent the day visiting the Yorkshire Wildlife Park which was nearby before checking in. Our room was nice and clean and had everything you would expect. We then had a drink at the bar before dinner. The dinner was not only fantastic value it was very good, as was breakfast the next day. We certainly would stay again.

We have been staying at the Best Western for many years now to attend a meeting up of old friends.And thats what it feels like when we arrive to book in.The staff are always welcoming and in some cases actually remember our names which i like.The location is easy to get to and when driving in the entrance it feels like home.The rooms are clean ,spacious and with very comfortable beds .I look forward to our next stay at this excellent hotel.

Always a pleasure staying at a hotel of this class. Acouple of very minor problems that did not spoil our experience. 1 problem was awedding was taking place and it would appear that parents cannot look after their children properly in some circumstances.

Met the standards I would expect from this class of hotel. Good amenities and well presented. Staff were pleasant. Plenty of easily accessible and free parking. Didn't use the restaurant so, can't comment on the food. Only negative was noisy plumbing in the wing of the hotel we stayed in (The Cottages). Staff made aware on departure. Would stay here again if visiting Retford.

We have stayed at this hotel on several occasions and have always found it to be very good. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable and the staff very obliging and friendly. The breakfasts are delicious and evening meals very good too. It has plenty of space for parking and only a short walk into town. I would highly recommend a stay here. The only thing I found that didn't come up to par was that the duvet was too warm but that is a personal choice.

Booked a private dining room to celebrate a belated birthday and stayed overnight. Arranging everything was easy as the event organiser (Jessica) was very accommodating. The (very reasonably priced) food far surpassed expectations, service was friendly, rooms and grounds were lovely. All in all a great stay.

This is such a lovely and relaxing hotel. The grounds are so nice to wander round and to sit in. They were being kept tidy every day. The rooms are spacious, and the lady looking after it was so cheery! All staff we met were pleasant, courteous and helpful. The Afternoon Tea was amazing, the best we have ever had!

We've just had our wedding here and would highly recommend. They've been so accomodating and flexible having had to rearrange once because of lockdown. Venue is great, really well organised and the planner made things so easy. If anyone reading this decides to get married here then hope you drop on and get Audrey help you on the day. She made sure we had everything we needed and that it all went to plan, amazing.

We had an absolutely amazing time at the West Retford for our wedding. We had family travelling from all over the UK so most of our guests stayed the night before our wedding too. So we ate in the wedding restaurant on the Friday evening. Food was delicious. On Saturday, the day of our wedding. Nothing was too much trouble. We literally didn't have to think about anything. Audrey was the lady who basically ensured the day went without a hitch, set up all our tables as we took our own decorations. It was just incredible and we truly couldn't have asked for anything more. We had an amazing day and thoroughly enjoyed our special day. A lot of our guests commented on how impressed they were with the venue, the food was just amazing and so delicious. Children also well catered for. A lot of people said they would return for one of their special event nights. The only thing that would improve things in the guest bedrooms would be air conditioning as it was incredibly hot. Everyone was amazing and really couldn't help too much, from Jessica who assisted with our original wedding booking, taking all our details of everything we wanted to Audrey who helped with the day and then the lady who took over in the evening. Just amazing.

Stayed here for one night. Staff are very friendly and helpful. The room I was giving was a great size. Hotel WiFi is poor so used my own data. Food choices on the menu are excellent, lots of options for those with intolerances. Morrison's supermarket within walking distance. However if you're travelling by public transport please note there may not be any taxis' at the train station on your arrival. You can get a list of numbers from the ticket office and hope you get a response.

Eight of us stayed here the night before my son's wedding. Our rooms were in the Georgian House building and were clean and comfortable. We had dinner together and the food was very good, with attentive and friendly, but not intrusive, service. I congratulate them on the vegetarian and vegan menu which I think was the best I have come across in an hotel. Breakfast the next morning was also good. we are unlikely to be in that particular area again but if we were we would stay again.

Fantastic stay rooms are lovely and bigger than expected. Beds are comfortable, very clean room. Breakfast was very good fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries or cooked breakfast the sausages are very tasty. Fresh juices and tea, coffee. Beautiful gardens where you can sit and have a drink. Would definitely stay again.

Great stopover venue for a golf trip. Staff brilliant, food choice good and well presented. Room was clean and spacious. Overall nice facilities and great value for money. Nice to have plenty of secure parking especially with golf gear in the cars !!

Lovely building. Very pretty with lovely gardens. On the Friday and Sunday we had exemplary service in the restaurant. Our waitress was superb. The food was good overall. It was only spoiled by the extremely noisy guests upstairs. Two poor nights sleep... Quite honestly, the noise spoiled our stay. We reported it....but there was nothing they could do.

A night away with my husband. The hotel was perfect. Location perfect. We arrived slightly early and was allowed to book in. Room was spotlessly clean and very comfortable bed. We decided to eat in the restaurant and the food was fantastic. I had the braised beef and the sponge pudding. It was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced too. I would highly recommend this for a break away. Staff were all lovely and friendly too

Room clean, spacious and comfortable (in Georgian House building across the car park from main hotel). Waiting team v attentive and helpful. Facilities generally of a high standard. We only had 2 issues one minor (only 1 towel) and one major - no enforcement of mask wearing in corridors of Georgian house and some noise issues with kids playing in corridors. There did not seem to be any staff presence in this building apart from in the morning when chambermaids arrived.

My little family decided that we would get one night away from the city, so decided to book this hotel. The hotel is lovely and we loved the garden which I could see as a perfect setting for weddings. We arrived about a hour early and we were lucky that are rooms were ready so we could check in. We stopped at the Georgian House as my mother has mobility problems and we needed to be on the ground floor, her room was large very clean and the bed was really comfortable. It also had a walk in shower for her which was fantastic. I & my 11yrs old son were in the room next door where I had a double bed and my son a single bed, again no complaints there lovely large room. We decided to get some food and although we had not booked a afternoon tea they were able to do two for us. I am vegetarian and my son can't have dairy products so we mixed and matched the two afternoon teas, it was wonderful and so much that we could not eat all the food. It also was a good price at £12.95 each - I would highly recommend the afternoon tea. In the evening my son was hungry so he went for a beef sandwich and again could not complain about the quality of the food he loved it. My only minor moan was that there was no plug socket near the bed so I could charge my mobile phone as I use it as a alarm. We did order breakfast but I am not really a breakfast person so my son had English Breakfast and really enjoyed it, my mother just had cornflakes and I had a cup of tea. It was a lovely relaxing night away for us all as we really needed it (we booked a night away as we are going through some anti-social behaviour where we live) and it was just what the doctor ordered. Its really peaceful and all the staff are wonderful.

Me and my partner stayed for two nights and found the hotel room perfect for our visit. It was clean, tidy, spacious and we slept great. The staff were also super friendly and helpful. Would stay again if the price was a little cheaper but understand you pay for quality.

Just stayed there for 2nights while attending a family funeral. COVID set up was good . Friendly staff, nothing too much trouble. Food was really good and served in the room, as were any drink requirements. Shame we were not able to experience the nice looking dining room and bar facilities, due to Covid.

Food delivered to room was hot and very good only couple of little quibbles one set cutlery short and no preserves with breakfast. Room was nice also warm but don't think we had a king size bed or we must be getting bigger

Just stayed there for 10 nights while I was working night shift in the area, COVID Set up was brilliant, really good staff, nothing too much trouble “will be back” if in the area again. Food was really good just wish that I didn't have to leave for work before the teatime service was available, I managed to get 2 teatime meals and they were worth every penny.

We stayed here the last weekend before lockdown no.2 and had a wonderful time. We booked a 'King'/Feature room and it was perfect, positioned in the Georgian building to the left of the main house and on the ground floor. It was spotlessly clean and I must give a special mention to the curtains; we really appreciated the thickness of them and how they totally blocked out any light. Covid measures were exemplary and all staff were very friendly and professional. My partner somehow managed to leave his glasses behind and we were phoned straight away. We didn't eat at the hotel but did have a little wander around the main building, which is very beautiful. It is so refreshing to find somewhere that has kept their decor in keeping with the building. There really is nothing worse than going to a period hotel and finding it has been overwhelmed with 21st century blandness! The grounds were truly outstanding and we loved wandering around them, despite it being October/November. I particularly liked that despite they were landscaped they retained a certain wildness! Overall a memorable stay for all the right reasons at a great price.

I hope that this review does not come across as snobby. But I honestly can't think of a stay in any hotel that was worse than this. Firstly, and not importantly, the decor of the hotel was very outdated and made the whole place feel dirty and depressing. The bedroom decor was mostly velvet with a 60 year old carpet that came with its own impressive odour. This was improved by the fact that it was about 30 degrees Celsius in my room for the whole stay because the radiator was left on for the day before I turned up. The dining area felt like i was waiting for a bus, with all the guests sitting in a row and staring at the walls. The food was inedible and even the wine couldn't help. Over night I felt extremely unsafe, which I guess wasn't the fault of the hotel. The guests next to me unfortunately were ‘Awkae'... until about 3 in the morning. There was a steady stream of people going in and out of the room to be ‘awake' together. Not quite my style, but each to their own - I just ask it be finished early enough for my beauty sleep. Overall - terrible stay, hated it at the time, was searching for other hotels in the area and I actually stayed in work an extra hour to prevent me from having to go back to my room. I will never stay at a best western again but looking back it is hilarious.

3 years ago we got married in this hotel so when we saw they had an Autumn offer on we decided to return for an over night stay to celebrate our Wedding anniversary. We had a lovely evening thanks to the staff (especially Ben) who made every bit of it enjoyable and special all over again. The food was of high quality and the rooms were clean and very well presented. It was a lovely experience all round and bought back some amazing memories of our special day. We felt really safe with all the Covid precautions in place. Thank you all again x

Stayed here one night. Lovely buildings. Great experience, room good size and clean and tidy. Restaurant provided a great breakfast and adhered to current Covid-19 regulations with table service only. Still provided everything we wanted including a great cooked breakfast. Definitely recommend and good value for money.

we ate in The Orangery at this fine Hotel a wonderful Pasta meal with a great cheese cake dessert . Great food and great service, in Retfords Premier Hotel. A wonderful evening, many thanks to all the staff.

This hotel is overpriced. I've had to stay here twice now for business but I won't stay again. Basic rooms, poor service and poorly trained staff. I think management is an issue, especially if you read through any negative comments here and the hotels unprofessional responses to genuine criticism. My advice would be to stay elsewhere.

I booked a table for 3 people for Afternoon Tea yesterday. On arrival we were shown into The Shelley Suite where the tables were well spaced out for the Coronavirus requirements. The doors were open which gave a gentle breeze coming through for the hot day it was. Once seated we were asked whether we wanted tea/coffee which came with the excellent finger sandwiches, warm scones, clotted cream and jam and a selection of cakes which were enjoyed by us all (compliments to the Chef for all the hard work it must have been.). Well looked after by all the staff. Must mention the grounds/gardens which are lovely to stroll around afterwards. Fully recommend Afternoon Tea at The West Retford Hotel.

Came here on a "girls" weekend and had a fabulous time. The staff were very polite, the rooms clean and comfortable. I was really happy with the value for money, what beautiful grounds the Best Western has!

Very good position, close to town but very quiet. Beautiful Gardens, a pleasure to walk around. Cant fault the cleanliness or friendliness of the staff. Everything was explained so nicely by reception.

We travelled to Retford on the first day that hotels were open after lock down (4 July 2020) We travelled from Portsmouth to visit our elderly mother. The hotel we booked (Clumber Park Hotel + Spa) cancelled our booking at 12:30 when we had all ready travelled 200 miles. The Best Western Retford happily helped us and we had a lovely room. The staff were Uber helpful, kind and professional. Clean, social distancing rules clear to follow. Nice bar and a substantial breakfast. What a joy it was to have 2 days at this superb Hotel. It was lovely to see our mother after so long. Many many thanks to the Management and staff at this historic hotel. Gary and Jools Roberts

Due to COVID-19 I moved out of the family home so that I could still work. I was put in this hotel as my living accommodation. The room service food is amazing, great tasty food and portion size are good. I use their laundry service, which is a big help for me due to all laundry service near by being closed. All the staff that I spoke to with social distancing in place or by the room telephone, have been very accommodating and nothing is too much trouble. The staff have been friendly and it's nice to be greeted by smiling faces in these difficult times. I have been here a while and the room is amazing. I have one of the converted cottages so there is a little patio area. Fortunately the weather has been beautiful so I can sit out with my book and a drink. There is a fabulous garden area and the hotel is situated near a number of shops and close to all amenities.

I stayed here for one night ahead of working in the area the next day. First impressions were very positive; what a gorgeous building, very easy to find, with easy parking very close to the town centre. Check in wasn't fast, but was reasonably efficient. I was in the Georgian building next door to the main building. The room was fairly large, and a reasonable temperature, not the overheated rooms so common to hotels at this time of the year. The twin beds were a little bit of a surprise, but the one I used was very comfortable. However, the walls are very thin, with very loud television music and dialogue audible from a nearby room. This was evident when I arrived at my room, and continued into the early hours and was evident, albeit more quietly, the following morning, too. This did not make sleep easy. Breakfast was excellent, with good service and very well cooked and tasty food, with the sausages being worthy of particular comment. At check out, I mentioned the noisy room, but there was neither acknowledgement of this still less an apology. I am back at the hotel, soon, so am hoping that my issues were a one off.

Held my 80th birthday meal at West Retford on the 21/2/20. What a lovely place, and meal, the food was exceptional, and so were the staff, it is a shame that more people do not realise what an ideal place it is for, weddings, venues, in fact EVERYTHING we do travel a lot and found the prices so competitive, WE WILL BE BACK. Thank you West Retford for making my party meal FABUUULOUS.

The hotel rooms here are massively overpriced for what you get, with the whole site desperately in need of an overhaul. Worse still is the food, the selection of which was awful and the portions tiny.

I'll start by explaining I work away from home every week and stay in many types of hotel from Travelodge through to 5* hotels. I have a fair idea of a well run hotel and what constitutes good service and value. I've been here a few times for drinks after work and it has always been slow but the location is convenient. I made the mistake of booking a room for a night recently. I was booked in quickly and that was fine. My room was in a side building and when I entered there was a ladder still leaning against a wall with painting rags everywhere but nobody working. When I went into my room it had a very strong smell of varnish. I opened the window, went for a drink and returned after an hour and it still smelt and actually started to burn my throat. There are too many issues to list here but putting a guest into a recently painted room is plain stupid. the service in the hotel is incredibly poor, whilst I was waiting at the bar to be served, (I waited a long time) I could hear three staff members chatting loudly at reception about how drunk somebody got recently. I decided after a while that the smell in my room was too much and I would ask to be moved. The lady at reception was not apologetic at all and just said she didn't have any spare rooms as they have booked most of the hotel out to a building contractor. I said this is not good. She had to call a manager. The manager offered to move me to another room eventually but instead I checked out and booked into a lovely hotel in Bawtry. I did receive a full refund but no apology in any way.

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, the wedding was well organised and the room my wife and I stayed in was clean and comfortable. Food was also very good. One member of staff, whose name unfortunately i didn't note was extremely friendly and helpful (if you are reading this I was father of the bride and in room 30).

My stay at the Best Western Hotel in Redford was very enjoyable fantastic location for the business trip the room was very comfortable and clean the staff very curtius and helpful food from the lounge bar was exactly what I was looking for

The tables were set with nice linen cloths and napkins with cutlery inside. Only a knife and tea spoon though, no fork in case any cakes were on offer. The crockery was thick, not what you would expect for afternoon tea. The tea itself was well presented, but somehow clumsy. There was plenty of food, I would describe it as quite a hearty afternoon tea, sandwiches, cakes, desserts, scones, chocolates. We weren't told the varieties of tea on offer, more we had to ask for fruit tea etc. It simply lacked the finesse to make it an occasion. It's cheap at £12.99 but the price reflects the quality.

Visited this hotel for one night. On arrival the receptionist was very pleasant and I was booked into room 20 which is in the annex. Room was spacious and fairly modern however the heating was on but it was cold. On my way out I stopped by reception and asked for a heater to be dropped off at my room. On returning no heater was there but to be fair the room had warmed up a bit so hey ho life goes on. Not a bad nights sleep but fire door right outside my room banged every time someone came or went. Breakfast had a minimal continental assortment....two kinds of tired looking cold meat and two types of cheese along with croissants. I opted for the cooked breakfast which was one sausage and one bit of bacon plus fried egg and beans.....it was just ok nothing more nothing less. For just shy of £100 a night would I stay there again......Nope definatly try one of the many independent hotels dotted about.

Good hotel nice big room in A house beside the main building Breakfest was poor, but with extra payment i could get fries eggs and bacon. First night I had a good sleep, but the rest of my stay was a hell, the last 2 night I go to sleep about 10:00 pm on hour start a loudden noice from the room above me sound like the do repair work for two hours this was both of my last nights So book room only in the main buildning if you like to sleep in the night

Comfortable room with everything you need Whilst we appreciate we were checking out on NY Eve it was a shame that that we had a knock at the door at 10.50 and then a phone call to the room at 11.02 when we were leaving the room for a 11am check out

We had the most wonderful eve a table of 14. The meal was fab. The only thing we wanted to say was the Jersey Boys would have been better doing two separate half hour slots. It was very cramped, I know everyone wants to make money at Xmas but not at the cost of people being squashed and uncomfortable. But overall a lovely evening c

My daughter had her wedding here, we could not have asked for a better place. The wedding coordinator was excellent at her job, putting the bride and groom at ease. The whole wedding was perfect. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. All the staff could not do enough for you.

I haven't stayed here for 8 years, it was good then and still good now. Staff are friendly and the bed was the comfiest I've slept in for a long time. The place is spotless and it's clear the management expect and get high standards from the staff. A great stay and would definitely stay again.

An excellent find for a single night stop - very well appointed room, very comfortable bed, and overall a highly enjoyable experience. Even little things like the coffee making facilities being at a useable height made such a difference! Highly recommended!

Stayed here for a long weekend while visiting friends in the local area ... The hotel is very nice & clean and the grounds are well kept/ spotless The hotel is very close to the town centre and not far from the local train station. The breakfast was very good and the staff were very friendly and efficient , Need to look for a deal in advance as it's pretty expensive ...!!

Stayed for one night in October as a family of four (2 adults and 2 kids). The price compares well with the likes of Premier Inn but the setting (a rather grand looking building and attractive grounds) is obviously much nicer. Parking is plently and the location, close to the town centre as well as a Morrisons supermarket is also handy. Our room was located in the separate building just across from reception. My main issue was this - when searching for family rooms I try to avoid the 'double bed and sofa bed' places as I prefer to have a couple of single or roll out beds. The Best Western Doncaster Mount Pleasant is a really good place as the executive family rooms are huge and have a double and two singles. However, those rooms are a good 40-50 pnds more than this place. Anyway, I was quite happy to see the standard family rooms here are a 'Family room with 1 double, 1 single and rollaway for 2nd child' Of course after going to the trouble of locating a room to meet our requirements my disappointment was considerable when I entered the room and found a double bed with a sofa bed. Really not what I wanted... Anyway, it was only for a night so I really could not be bothered to complain. The room itself was okay, not really big enough with the sofa bed in situ, liveable in once we folded the sofa bed away until we needed it. The place was clean enough, wifi worked okay. The signs in the bathroom warning of the hot towel rail were not joking - it was positively scalding and I never did work out how to turn it off. The heating in the room itself was not the best but the heat from the bathroom kind of helped. Overall, I certainly would not want to return, a really nice looking place but the finer details left me feeling a bit underwhelmed.

While very pretty, as a single female traveller the cottages are not ideal. Felt very vulnerable due to ground floor location. room was so cold, any heat you got in was lost as soon as you opened the door, even with additional radiator left in the room. Multiple problems with room all put right quickly by staff but shouldn't have happened. Can't recommend due to the cold but might be nicer in warmer weather.

We know Retford well & the best western is well located . It's very close to the town centre, local kings park that is stunning, bars/ cafes and restaurants. The hotel itself is very clean, peaceful and set in lovely grounds.

lovely room in the Georgian block for my friend and I so we could both drink following a meal out. Very helpful staff all round. we got back from an iffy meal and headed to the bar for a bottle of wine to end the day. room was very nice with everything we needed for an overnight stay.

So checked in Sunday 28th October. Restaurant closed, bar was open but waiting staff not interested, got asked 20 minutes. Later was served with a tasteless veg curry another 15 minutes later. When I complained the waitress gave a disingenuous apology of being sorry to hear me rather than the poor quality of the food. This was not a subjective opinion. 2nd Night was the same. En suite bathroom not cleaned well either. Breakfast order had to be chased and with cold tea. It seemed like the staff were on a go slow, and the management was not helping.

We stayed 2 nights at the Best Western Plus to attend friends' wedding there. The wedding was lovely but the wait in between the ceremony and the wedding lunch was over 2 hours, far too long. Having said that we had a room in the Georgian House which was spacious and spotlessly clean, lovely bathroom with bath and shower. The decor was a little dull but that was the only criticism. The bed was huge and very comfortable. Breakfast was plentiful and varied but pre-cooked, help yourself food will never replace freshly cooked, especially the fried eggs. We did however request fresh and the staff obliged. The staff throughout our stay were always pleasant and helpful.

Quite a late booking. Room was fine and the new mattresses on the beds have made a great improvement, All the staff very helpful. Dinner was exquisite. Regretfully breakfast was rather average. Disappointed that kippers have been taken off the menu. Everything was really good. Plenty of good parking.

Beautiful building and excellent service! I would definitely return and recommend this hotel. Lovely room. I'm afraid the food wasn't quite up to the same standard though unfortunately. I ordered room service and had prawn paella... just mush with no flavour and what tasted like frozen veg. Sorry but not impressed at all. Such a shame. All that said I would still return and great value for money

Hotel is nice enough, but for me the main issue is paper thin walls - all I could hear was the couple in the next room droning on when I arrive in the evening, late at night and early morning - seriously irritating in what is a lovely peaceful location - some traffic noise would have been welcome! Room very spacious, comfortable and clean, WiFi good and excellent breakfast in the morning. Would not recommend unless you are hard of hearing.

Well located for the town, clean and tidy very friendly staff, attended a wedding and felt very well looked after. Benefited from a 2 night stay as we travelled from Essex. Would consider returning when visiting friends.

I stayed in what they call the Georgian house ( next to the nice old building in all the pics!) room was large and clean, all mod cons and had a comfy bed. Food was nice and staff attentive. There isn't much to say apart from it was a good enough base for a business stop. If you can get a room in the main building I reiterate the comments about thin walls but luckily most patrons are single travellers so you don't hear much

The hotel and service including breakfast were all fine but we were in the Georgian and whilst the room and bed were comfortable the walls must be paper thin. We could hear (probably joined in conversations) on both sides of us and to avoid upsetting neighbours used subtitles on the television. Sadly I could not recommend it.

Booked here for a couple of nights for a getaway. The hotel is well placed for Retford town centre. We used it as a base to visit Clumber Park and Hardwick Hall. Check in was efficient and polite. We had a slight problem with the room when we got in there but the front desk staff sorted it out with no fuss. Staff were helpful and polite. Would go back again if in Retford.

Really impressed with the hotel, everything from the grounds to the room. Lovely girl on reception and friendly staff in the restaurant. I'll definitely be returning and my daughter had a great time too.

Overall it is a pretty English style hotel to stay if you are in the area. Staff is very polite, helpful and attentive. Receptions a young lady with a soft voice will make you feel welcomed. The only thing which needs improvement is the coffee. These days I strongly disagree with serving instant coffee which is always unpleasant and ruins early mornings or evening dinners. I would recommend to invest in a coffee machine, train your staff how to do proper coffee, espresso, cappuccino, late as this small change will add so much more to the experience at this place. That's my only comment and hope that the management will consider it? If you think the same, please post your comment and one day we might see some changes.

Service amazing. Food amazing. Rooms amazing. By far one of the best hotels I've stayed in. The staff couldn't do anymore. Stayed here for 11 days and they made me feel like a princess. I went to stay at another hotel and within 20 mins I can straight back here because this is how a hotel should be run

nice food lovely room for the price stayed in a cottage apartment,lovely grounds to walk around 15 min walk in to retford town centre plenty of free parking the burger we had cost £12 but it was one of the best iv ever had and plenty of it apint of stella cost about 4.50 overal a lovely hotel and i think the cater for weddings

Stayed here overnight on our way south to the ferry. Hotel in nice setting with lovely garden. Our room was in the Georgian Building and was a good size and very comfortable. We were able to get a fan to cool us down as it was a pretty warm day. We enjoyed a glass of wine outside in the bar area which was lovely. We came back later for a light dinner to find the bar area full of wedding guests apparently between the wedding and the evening event so hard to get service. I have to say we were very disappointed with our food. The fish cakes were like frozen potato fritters and did not taste of fish at all. Given the quality of the hotel this was very surprising. Not sure if it was because of the wedding consuming the kitchen staff but disappointing none the less.

Arriving late the receptionist was excellent and got me checked in quickly and assisted me in getting a welcome night cap after a long drive. A very well located for stop over and nice setting that I will certainly use in the future

Hotel was beautiful and staff friendly. Our room was modern and very clean, communal areas were clean and tidy. Food was excellent, we were there for a wedding and reception food was excellent. Breakfast was hot and plenty of choice, lots of choice on the continental side as well. Hotel is tastefully decorated. The garden to the back of the hotel had manicured lawn but the rest of the garden was a big let down. It was untidy and dangerous to walk round the back due to garden debris and broken and wobbly paving slabs. No planting to make it look inviting, a definite gardener needs to thoroughly sort this and then it will be beautiful when done.

Spent the weekend with friends at this beautiful hotel . The Hotelast set in its own grounds. Absolutell lovely. Food was really good. Well presented and cooked beautifully. Breakfast was lovely. Plenty ofor choices and hot.The weekendal break was arranged by Ogdens and was well worth thevery money. The staff were lovely and friendly. Despite the appalling weather we had a great time and would certainly visit this hotel again.

I was located in the out building to the right of the main hotel on the ground floor WARNING: I stayed here last week for 3 nights and only had 1 good nights sleep! I was here attending a course for work (not on the premises) and really needed a good nights sleep, the first night I could hear both sides of my room and the last night one side, so actually getting to sleep was not possible without ringing reception to ask the other guests to be quite or turn down the TV, also the guests above me were not very light on their feet!! So if you're a light sleeper take earmuffs!! I had a light meal in the bar area which I enjoyed and the breakfast was nice and I didn't have to wait long for my order, however the bacon was over cooked, plenty of selection. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

Two gripes no air con and no taxi service early in the morning had to walk to station at 5.30 am with all my bags other than that loved it - room was clean and bed was comfy staff were great would stay again and recommend to my friends

this is the second function we have had at this venue and just like the first every thing was perfect(except the rain).rooms v good organisation v good food excellent.we stayed there for 2 nights and the staff could have not been more helpfull.the only downside was the lack of toilets,i know there where more upstairs but very difficult for disabled people and only one toilet under the stairs for the function room with 100 guestsbut apart from that thankyou for a wonderfull weekend

Do not stay here if you have young children,they will put you on the top floor an make you struggle up an down the stairs because they don't have any lifts! Whilst they put single people on the bottom floor in the family room

Came here for a wedding and the next morning went down for breakfast to find a massive hair in it then when they brought me a fresh one out there was another hair in it. I thought hair nets are supposed to be worn in kitchens obviously not at this place

We stayed here recently over a recent Saturday night. We were given a ground-floor room in the annex block. We liked the fact that there was a small porch area behind the front door, which gave the impression of entering a small apartment from the outside. The room was very spacious & comfortable. The modern bathroom was also very nice with a large, walk-in shower area. We had an excellent night here which was only slightly marred by a lot of loud stomping above us quite early the following morning. The walls & floors in this building seem to be very thin & not too sound-proofed!

First time at The West Retford Hotel. Food was good but service could have been a little more attentive and quicker. Nice surroundings though and the interior of the restaurant was good, tables were clean.

Stayed here during Leger Tour,no complaints from us,dealt with over 30 people very efficiently. This is a lovely country house,set in lovely grounds ,they allocated us in a nearby annex,separate from the hotel,lovely room,very quite, no room to room noise,nicely furnished,we ate in the bar,ok not fabulous,but ok... All in all nice stay,comfy bed,would stay again if in the area.

The room itself was comfortable although the pillows were hard and unpleasant. The chairs in the room were made of PVC and this was peeling. The main restaurant closed at 9.30 according to the Hotel Information but when we turned up the lights were off and there was nobody around. Ate in the bar which was OK but nothing special. Breakfast was a real dissapointment. The tables by the windows were "made up for lunch" so we couldn't sit and look out at the grounds. That's for the convenience of the hotel and the staff, not for the guests, and is down to disengaged management not having a grip on what's going on. My breakfast was inedible. Dried scrambled eggs that must have been sitting in a bain marie for ages and smoked salmon that smelled on the turn. I ate none of it. All in all it was an indifferent experience doubly so since I'd chosen the hotel because of the excellent reviews about the food and service.

I've left several excellent reviews over the years for this hotel but unfortunately on this occasion it really let itself down. The staff, as ever, were lovely. Always ready to help. However this time the bedroom was not quite as clean as previously. Also in need of some small maintenance. What really let it down was the restaurant. Dinner was disgraceful. Apparently a new menu they were trying out.. My meal was replaced with an apology from the lovely manager but it should never have been served. The first breakfast was fine but the second, scrambled eggs, were rubbery, overcooked and inedible. The fresh fruit bowl was almost all apple and the bacon (one rasher) was so overcooked my fork couldn't go into it.. What a shame. I'm afraid we won't be eating here again.

I was delayed arriving so thought I should ring to ensure that my room was not given to anyone else. The receptionist was extremely kind and reassuring. She generously offered to book a taxi for me to pick me up from the station. Given I had only asked for a number, this was a most welcome gesture on her part. She also rang after having made the booking to confirm all was in place. She is a credit to the hotel and, sadly, I did not take her name. The hotel itself if a £6 taxi ride from the station and about a 10 to 15 minute walk into the centre of town. It is an attractive old building with a new wing (called Georgian due, I suspect to the shape of the windows). The rooms are large and comfortable. I had a good night's sleep. They are well decorated, although the ceilings let them down, with rather ugly tiles and, in my room's case, some watermarks. There are all the usual amenities you need: TV, comfy chairs, desk (although it needed a desk light), fan, kettle with tea and coffee making facilities, iron and board, safe, etc, The door has a chain for added security. The bathroom had good quality towels and soaps and the linen was also of good quality. My breakfast was prepared to order and a request for a piece of sliced toast was no bother. The ingredients were all good quality. There are a few newspapers to read. I paid £66 for the night which was very reasonable all told.

I have stayed here a couple of times - rooms perfect, restaurant good and bar well stocked! Staff friendly and within walking distance to town. Also close to a train station for those not wanting to bring a car.

We had our wedding at the West Retford Hotel. The day was all we wished for and more, Thanks to the staff who were so wonderful and professional. Special thanks must go to Wendy, Jessica and Pam who ensured the day went well and even better than planned. The grounds and venue were outstanding, the food was so well presented and tasted divine (thanks chef and team) The staff bent over backwards to help. Most of our guests have said its been the best wedding ever. Just Wow!!

Our room at the best western was clean and comfortable. The staff need to have people skill training as all seem to look fed up. We had a cooked breakfast the following morning which was ok at least we got a good morning from waiting staff. Check out was quick but again staff need to be a bit more people friendly.

I stayed here last year and was very disappointed, however having just stayed for four nights I am impressed at the improvement. I really enjoyed my stay and particular thanks to the reception staff who were polite and helpful ( unlike my last visit). Rooms were clean, spacious and well equipped. The wifi worked well and was free, good speed. Will happily stay here again, when in the area, thank you and well done for the improvement.

My partner and I attended the recent ‘Comedy Night' held at this hotel. Surprisingly, the very talented Tom Binns, who has had his own TV sitcom and plays many roles, (including Clinton Baptiste in Phoenix Nights), arrived at this function as himself, and finally as his best known character Ivan Brackenbury. After the two course meal, the comedy commenced at 21:00. After the compère was heckled by numerous tables, Tom Binns came on for his first slot, calming them down a little. Another chap, Charlie Hopkinson, did a short set of impressions before Ivan Brackenbury came on. Up to this point, one table in the room had been talking all the way through, although at this stage, not too loudly. During ‘Brackenbury's' performance, the volume increased, to the extent that he himself had to ask them to be quiet. One female's excuse was that she ‘was drunk.' People from other tables complained to them and to members of staff that were still in the room, all to no avail. Eventually ‘Ivan' became so annoyed that he stopped his act and asked them to leave the premises. Fortunately they did, but the actions of the selfish, ignorant people on this table spoilt the night for everybody. The part that disgusted me most was the fact that nobody from the hotel came out to speak to these people, or helped in any way to deal with this situation, despite complaints to them. They really should have taken responsibility, and not left it to the person who was trying very hard to entertain us.

The hotel is good, quiet, with plenty of private parking, and in easy walking distance to Retford Town Centre. Excellent fast Fibre Broadband wifi connection included in the room rate. We've stayed here several times, however, this time we were in room 5 of the cottage, and it wasn't up to the standard we expect for the price. The room is tired, and needs updating. There was only one available power socket at the time, which was behind the television, as a heater and lamp were using two sockets, and the hairdryer and kettle were plugged into the remains two sockets. Obviously these can be unplugged, but there should more power sockets available either side of the bed, and by the seating area; having USB sockets on them would be good too. If you open the wardrobe, you cannot go into the bathroom, and if you are coming out of the bathroom, and someone has the wardrobe door open, the doors collide with each other. The TV is getting old, and some of the setting are not adjustable, i.e. the subtitles will not switch off via the subtitle button of the remote, and poor sound quality. The other problem are the floorboards of the the room above that squeak, so whenever someone in that room walks around, you can hear every movement. We were woken every night by the people above getting up to use the toilet; the floorboards need screwing down. All the above things are easy to fix, so a high level member of staff should stay in the room, especially when someone is in the room above; they would then realise the quality and standard of that particular room needs some attention to bring it back up to the standard of the other rooms we have stayed in at the hotel. The bedding was of good quality, but thin pillows without much support; Travelodge pillows are better quality.

This looks a beautiful hotel as you drive in. Unfortunately when I checked in I had to ask to move rooms twice due to the cleanliness. One room had clearly not been vacuumed, and the second room had not had the toilet cleaned properly. The rooms are ok in general but I would advise have a little look around prior to unpacking. When I moved the second time I did get an upgraded room and the reception staff were apologetic.

After a day in the midst of wind and rain, trying to enjoy our two day coach trip we were never so glad to se an hotel room!!! And WOW, what a lovely large ensuite room. Beautifully furnished, ultra comfy bed, smart bathroom and All immaculately clean. Dinner that evening was delicious. A special thanks to the lovely serving team— I suspect they were trainees , expertly directed by the young lady in black jacket- well done all. Breakfast was superb, bar was great with normal bar prices. Thanks for a brief but lovely stay to all the staff.

staff very accommodating whether reception,and restaurant , house maids very courteous, the high tea party for 16 guests was very well managed surprised the hotel had no non-alcoholic drinks such as pressie, fortunately we have brought our own for the care home and was allowed to use

Visited this hotel restaurant for a birthday lunch,a party of sixteen including three small children.The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and very helpful with the children,it was very relaxing and very unrushed a great afternoon.

Situated an easy 5-6 miles from the A1 so it's a convenient stop, mid country. As described on other reviews the bedrooms are in a specially built annexe and there are a lot - maybe a hundred over two floors. The smokers congregate outside the front door so you have to get past them to get in. Private car park and easy parking. I have stayed there four times in four months due to location; it's fine. Not luxurious but practical and ok. I think the three star rating is correct. The beds are well-used and the duvets are heavy man-made fibre like the pillows. Sadly the pillows are hard and not comfy. The dark brown carpets are stained and I always wear something on my feet. Bathrooms have had a face lift in the past 6-7 years but are dated. The rooms are large with windows that open. Individual and effective heating system (radiator) which you can control. As with many hotels, you can hear the tv and plumbing from other rooms and doors banging. Restaurant and lounge areas in the main part of the hotel are very nice.

Good hotel, pleasant and helpful staff. Our luxury room was very nice and spacious, comfy bed, good bathroom/shower and large bath in the bedroom. bathroom had a strong drain smell to start with this subsided during our stay but the bathroom and room where clean. There is some noise from the road as the back wall of the old building is right next to the main road and slightly below it. Nice food from bar and lovely patio/gardens. Ample parking. Short, 10 minutes walk to Retford town center.

Have just had a lovely two night stay at this Hotel which has a 3 star rating. Stayed in the Georgian block of this hotel which is about 80 mts from the Reception, Bar, Restaurant building. Lovely gardens at rear and within easy walking distance of the town centre. Nicely decorated rooms which keep the Georgian feel of the Hotel. A wedding party and reunion party were in the hotel on the Saturday Night but still quiet if you are in the Georgian Block. Nice friendly , Helpful staff. Good Hotel to stay for visiting the local sights and will return.

I stayed here one night and I would definitely stay again. The hotel is clean and staff very friendly. Breakfast was nice and hot which you don't always get. I had a restful sleep as the hotel grounds are very quiet. I would stay here again.

Booked this hotel for the residential Christmas eve & Christmas Day package (2 nights, including meals and single supplement upgrade to double room) £250 pp Hotel was a comfortable, clean and contemporary standard but lacked a little pizzazz Staff super friendly and breakfast buffet to excellent standard Top floor rooms were spacious and had seating area. Hotel lacked a little less personality than some of the older Best Westerns but would definitely stay again Unfortunately we didn't take advantage of the amazing spa/gym facilities Only real gripe is thst we did ask for 1 x room of out 4 x room booking to be as close to lift or ground floor as possible but hotel either forgot or couldn't accommodate due to full bookings but they didn't explain

Booked in with no problems, room was very clean and bed extremely comfortable. Only problem was duvet was too heavy for us. Breakfast was good standard. Staff very helpful and polite and booking in and out very easy.

We have been staying here for the last 3 weeks through work . The rooms are spacious and very clean with comfortable beds . Food is of very good quality and very reasonable specials available every day which is great . We use hotels all over the UK and most have set menus so it's good that we have a varied choice . Staff are friendly and service is swift and nothing is too muck trouble ,all in all this is a good hotel with a reasonable price to suit . There is a Morrison's supermarket just around the corner and the town centre is close by .

I've stayed here a number of times in the last 18 months due to work. The rooms are large, clean and well equipped. The beds are very comfortable. Staff have always been helpful and friendly. I'm gluten intolerant and often find breakfast a challenge in hotels, the breakfast here is always very good with gluten free toast cooked separately. I would highly recommend this hotel.

For the money was good value. Rooms are very clean, spacious and well equipped. The staff I spoke with on reception and bar area were really friendly and couldn't do enough to help you. Only reason for 4 not 5 stars was the walls are VERY thin! I could here almost the full conversation of the people in the next room.

Stayed one night, would stay again. The good: comfortable bed, spotlessly clean room at a reasonable price £65. Plentiful Free parking, good location. Free WiFi. En-suite has both bath & shower. Friendly staff. The not so good: Pricing very odd - breakfast with room £84. Breakfast listed on booking site £7.50 each, breakfast on restaurants menu £10.75 each, none of which add up! Cooked breakfast one egg and half a rasher of bacon - nicely cooked but really? Plenty of other range for breakfast however and a lovely dining room. Restaurant for evening meals pricey but ok - limited menu. If the prices made sense and the restaurant upped their game it'd be 4+ stars all the way however.

Very clean hotel with attentive staff. Overall pleasant stay. Fast check in, very pleased with room and close to town centre and local restaurants. Despite two very large receptions being held at the same time, service was good.

The staff were so welcoming and looked after us well, the breakfast was perfect. Only let down was that the room in which I stayed wasn't very clean and had thick duster built up from the extractor fan which actually triggered my asthma.

I arrived at this tucked away place and was surprised by how nice it was . Checked in quick receptionist was love!y and helpful , for the price i was surprised how nice the room was very clean modern , it's so convenient for the town centre which is 5 mins away , the staff are all so helpful and nice , breakfast was well cooked , nice traditional or continental or bbotn

This hotel is close to the town centre and housed in a handsome old building. Good feature is a separate block of rooms away from the main hotel with two floors of rooms, which is quiet and easily accessible from the car park. We stayed one night and asked specifically for a quiet ground-floor room in this block. The room was reasonable and clean, if a little 'tired'. Bedroom lights were not bright and sliding doors on wardrobe stuck when trying to open them. Shower in bath (high sides) but very efficient flow and plenty of hot water. Food in the restaurant was adequate, although choices limited. Service friwndly and quite good. Staff generally helpful. Beware of weddings and other functions as bar can be extremely busy and noisy.

Stayed here for our 1st wedding anniversary. Married here the year previous. Can't fault the hotel. They even put 2 glasses and bottle of Prosecco in the room. Perfect stay thank you. Rooms very clean and staff very friendly.

Review is based on buffet/party night experience. My first time at this hotel. First impressions of the building, very clean and lovely decor in keeping with a country style hotel. Staff were very pleasant friendly and welcoming. Some of the party already arrived and queuing at the downstairs bar, I asked what the hold up was, they replied, wine not cooled, no change in the till, only one person serving. We moved to the upstairs bar, again only one person serving. Not a good start considering lots of people arriving at the same time requiring a drink. The vegetarian option was not easy to select from the tray of food set up in a separate room. It was mixed up with meat options, no labels, nothing relating to allergens (I do not have any) although this is a topical subject. Another member of staff offered her help, went to the kitchen and brought me a dish of salad. The same member of staff selected me a plate of vegetarian food which was jacket potatoes, bruschetta appetizers with almost identical toppings and some spicy potato wedges. I did suggest that in future the food needs to be labelled up to indicate the main ingredients and also possible allergy considerations. The evening was spoilt a little and lessons can be learned to ensure future guests do not have the poor experience I had. These buffet/disco nights are weekly for the Christmas period, hopefully next time the guests will be happy.

Good parking, large Georgian period buildings with plenary of character. Friendly welcoming receptionist. Large room with tea and coffee making. A really excellent walk in shower. Large flat screen tv. Unfortunately the bar was not manned all the time - press button to call for service, staff were very pleasant . Unfortunately the bitter (Tetly) was not available but we found by accident a tasty Spanish beer from Madrid, (Mochou). Bar food ( sizzling beef and chicken was really good and tasty) , nice Creme Brûlée, poor lemon meringue. Breakfast was nicely cooked and tasty. Could have been hotter and the small dish the baked beans were served on plate was superfluous. We really enjoyed our stay, thought that it was very good value for money and we will definitely recommend it.

Rooms are In a Georgian house , next to main building . Stayed for 2 nights of 2 different occasions. Very clean and spacious rooms. The beds were super comfy, and every thing you need is In the room e.g. hair dryer / iron etc . Biscuits and toiletries replaced every day . Had one bad nights sleep due to next doors tv being on so loud I could hear every word until 2 am ! But this is not the hotels fault. The staff were friendly . The breakfast let it down, poor Buffett choices very limited and basic . Cooked food was fine but nothing outstanding. No pool or gym which is a shame but over all a very nice hotel walkable distance to Retford for bars and restaurants.

Where do i start me and my wife booked a wedding celebration at this beautiful hotel. On our day the staff were absolutely fantastic, and very attentive which enabled our day to go off without a hitch. The sun then shone which allowed us to have pictures in the beautiful gardens. If anyone is thinking of booking a wedding package then this is the perfect place. Thank you again west retford.

Difficult to find fault with this hotel. Near to A1 a very convenient stop when travelling north. Large clean room with very comfortable bed. Useful toiletries and plenty of hot water. Enjoyable meal in bar in evening and well cooked breakfast next morning. Enjoy - we did!

This hotel is set in lovely grounds just off the busy North Road - however you cannot hear any traffic. The staff are very welcoming, polite and efficient. Had a nice room which was very clean and modern. Did not eat in the restaurant but had room service and I must say the food was excellent with very large portions. Ample car parking space. We will definitely stay here again.

Stayed for one night in the coach house annex. Lovely newly refurbished rooms but the walls are paper thin! Consequently, we could hear the couple in the next room talking all night until 2.30am. Then, worse I couldn't sleep due the guy snoring all night. It sounded like he was in our room! Thus, I would not advise staying here if you want to sleep well.

A pleasure to stay in a lovely hotel with polite caring and helpful staff whom were there whenever you needed someone but were never over bearing or imposing enabling you to relax and enjoy your stay whilst assisting with requirements without delay

Very well presented with professional, courteous and welcoming staff. I could not have been anything else but impressed. My room was pristine, and very tastefully decorated. A great business stop for the week.

We were very pleased with our night stay at this hotel.. staff were extremely welcoming and the restaurant was good with a large range of food. Breakfast equally good. Room excellent. The only thing missing from this hotel was air conditioning as we found our room hot and were unable to cool sufficiently by opening windows. Otherwise excellent.

Stopped here 2 night for a wedding on the Saturday night. Excellent do and excellent hotel. All the staff are brilliant even though they are overstretched (Get some staff!!!) They couldn't have helped more. All really pleasant. The hotel is pretty large with quite a few rooms shared between 3 buildings. Breakfast was good with plenty on offer. Bars in the function rooms but beer types were a bit limited. Rooms are nice with a comfy bed. Parking on site.

I stay in the West Retford every month for a few weeks at a time, the staff are amazing, always pleasant and extremely helpful especially in the breakfast room, I couldn't understand why one guest recently had a complaint about an egg ! It's quite obvious that if you require an egg cooked differently to what is out at the time,the breakfast staff, if told are more than willing to oblige, in fact if there is something you would like that isn't on the menu they are more than happy to get it for you, I always have lemon and ginger tea with lemon pieces these are brought to me every morning, I also like a milky coffee this is also given to me, you only have to ask. The rooms are very comfortable as is the bed, the ladies that do the rooms are also very friendly and pleasant, the rooms are left immaculate, the receptionists are always helpful and friendly. We found the hotel on Trip Advisor as we needed to stay near the A1 on our way north. We booked an excellent value bed, breakfast and evening meal package. The hotel is near the middle of the town based around a Georgian house with a separate block. The staff at check-in, bar, restaurant and breakfast are amazingly friendly and helpful. The room is well presented although maybe a little dark but, uniquely in our recent travel experience, everything worked including the wifi. The grounds are extensive and well laid out and maintained. The meal was of excellent quality with a generous allowance as part of the package and wine prices were reasonable. Breakfast was likewise of good quality and well cooked and served in a separate room (The Orangery). The Best Western franchise sets high standards and these were certainly achieved as the West Retford. The hotel is highly recommended if you need a stop over on a journey north - the A1 although busy, is notably less frenetic than the M1. It's a shame they don't cater for dogs however. Thanks to the staff at the West Retford and for Trip Advisor for helping us find it!

We were travelling from Northumberland to cambridge to attend a funeral and wanted to break our journey. Retford seemed a suitable place, beimg close to the A1. The Best Western Plus West Retford hotel provided a very comfortable and quiet room. Only a few minutes walk from the town centre, we walked into town and ate in one of the pubs. Breakfast in the hotel the following morning was very good - everythiung you could want. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. It also has lovely grounds, although we didn't actually walk in them.

Our room was excellent, beautiful furnished including king size bed and a two seater settee, even a safe in the room. The bathroom was well laid out with a good selection of complimentary items. The room was spotlessly clean and had a beautiful view over the grounds. The hotel is well located in the nicer area of the town, within easy walk of the town centre. The car park is large and secure.

Hotel is great. Nice for relaxing and taking short break. Staff are friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and tide. Location also in walking distance from couple of thing (market and gas station). Restaurant and food were ok. What i like mostly is the quiteness there, you can relax for some time and go for a walk around the area

Stayed for a 2 night break on august bank holiday. First impressions grounds are lovely and reception staff nice and prompt told us everything we needed to know about room and dining etc. DOUBLE EXECUTIVE ROOM : Very large good size room,had everything you needed and more.Found the bed to be very comfortable and bedding crisp and of good quality. Large tv ,tea & coffee facilities ,usual toiletries ,bathroom was a decent size as well and shower was adequate warm water etc. Room was very clean and in a quiet location only slight negative you could hear other guests in there room now and then ie tv on or coming and going but this was minimal more to do with thin walls than anyone being noisy,overall would really recommend. BREAKFAST : we found to be very good quality,had cereal croissants english breakfast toast which was a buffet and a few more on the menu to order,coffee was very good,we would recommend staying bed and breakfast worth getting up for. STAFF: Really happy friendly and polite people,normally you cant say that about everyone but you can here . LOCATION: In a good location,10 min walk to the town centre with shops pubs and plenty of places to eat.Hotel sits back from the road so we didnt hear any traffic noise it was very peaceful in the grounds. There was a wedding on when we arrived and we never had any noise from this which we have experienced at other hotels so that was good. OVERALL : We had a nice stay in a really nice hotel that ticked all the boxes cant get any better than that.

Its like arriving at an old manor house. The buildings and grounds are lovely from the exterior. I was just there 1 night on business but the hotel ticked all the boxes. Friendly staff, excellent evening meal and breakfast. My only thought is it could use some modernisation on the interior. The rooms are a good size and include all the amenities you would want. The area was quiet and I slept very well. Overall a great hotel and very affordable. Recommended.

This was one of the events offered by West Retford Hotel so thought I would give it a try and wasn't disappointed. From start to finish the evening was a great success! Excellent atmosphere. The food was piping hot (to say it was a sellout). All the staff were really polite and friendly The entertainment was spot on and all in all this was a great event. The only disappointment was I didn't stay the night.

I stayed over night with my children and little grandson whilst visiting friends in Retford. Welcoming, helpful, friendly staff and clean. Nothing was too much trouble. A lovely break! We all enjoyed the stay!

Excellent room and exceptionally peaceful given there was a large wedding in full swing. Large, immaculately clean and very comfortable room. Possibly the most comfortable bed I've slept in for a long while. Really couldn't fault it.

We came for my daughters 3rd birthday to be close to Sundown Adventureland. The hotel was beautiful, the staff went above and beyond to be kind, helpful and friendly. The family room we stayed in was on the ground floor in the annex building, so handy for getting bags from car to the room with a small child in tow. The room was lovely and welcoming and very spacious. We had breakfast on both mornings and we were very happy with the choice of food and how tasty it was. Everyone we saw on the reception desk during our stay was friendly and enjoyed talking to our daughter and asking if she was having a good time. The hotel is a short walk from Kings Park, which was an added bonus as it was a beautiful park, perfect for young children. Sundown was a 15 min drive away and again was perfect for our daughter. We requested aired milk in our daughters cup from the bar for our daughters bedtime drink on both nights and each night we got it without any problems. Our little girl loved the huge garden at the back of the hotel. On the morning that we checked out we saw a few of the cleaning staff and they again greeted us with a friendly smile and said good morning to us. Nothing was too much trouble and we couldn't have been made to feel more welcomed by everybody. I am so happy we found this hotel and booked it for our daughters birthday getaway. We have told all our friends and family about it and would highly recommend it to people in future.

We stayed here as my friend was getting married nearby. A week before I stayed I emailed asking if I could check in early to get ready at the hotel but I was told that the earliest was 12pm. When we arrived I was told I couldn't check in until 2:00pm despite having the email as “Pam didn't put it on the booking”. Luckily we were already dressed for the wedding so had to leave our bags at the hotel to check-in when we returned at night. This seems to have happened to everyone who had booked the hotel and therefore meant that after the wedding all 84 guests who were staying there were checking in at the same time!! When we arrived a lady was in the back office and ignored the gathering crowd at reception for 5-10 minutes before walking through and shouting “you should've shouted me” which we thought was strange as she had looked up at us a few times. We had seen her look up so we waited politely, apparently this wasn't the right thing to do. She then complained “I've got to go and get the keys now” so she was gone for another 5-10 minutes. The lady was the Duty Manager Meena, and she was clearly stressed and not handling the situation very well at all. The first guest to be checked in said that he wasn't happy with how this was being handled as she was abrupt and awkward with him. When he said this she shouted in his face. It was really really shocking. There was a gasp from everyone who witnessed this. This was the topic of conversation in the residents bar. The groom said that he had even warned the hotel a few times that all the guests would returning together so there would be a lot of people to check in, despite this they didn't prepare for it and seemed really put out by it all. It didn't get any better in the bar either as the one other team member really didn't want to have to serve at the bar and kept disappearing and making huffing and puffing sounds when anyone asked for a drink. He told me he didn't have enough Baileys for a double, only a 1.5 measure but still wanted to charge for a double and snapped at me when I suggested he charge as a single or discount the double. More huffing and puffing as he went to get another bottle. I asked for a San Miguel and he replied that he didn't have a San Miguel glass, you really couldn't make this up. Guests were constantly having to ring the buzzer or go and find someone to serve at the bar (which was now full) and when he did arrive it was clear he was going to slow-time this in some sort of protest. At one point Meena served behind the bar and then started to walk away whilst people were still waiting. One guest politely said excuse me I've not been served and she shouted (literally shouted) over her shoulder whilst walking away “I've clocked off now, that's it, I'm off” Genuinely could not believe how bad this experience was. The pair were behaving like two children who had been told to clean their room, the attitude was totally unacceptable. Meena, as the manager in charge, should lead by example!! It's such a shame as the hotel is beautiful! We had an executive room at £140 for the night which was big and well presented. The bed was very comfortable and everything was spotless. The breakfast room “The Orangery” is nice and bright and breakfast and the team serving it were all excellent. So to sum this up, this is a really nice hotel but if you book here be aware that even if they promise something in writing they may not keep to their word. And hope and pray that you never have to deal with Meena and her side kick! Everything else should be fine.

We visit here quite often, We even had chistmas lunch here. The food is always excellent and cooked to perfection. The place is always very clean and well presented. The Only down side is they try to skimp on staff ( to save wages ) ( my opinion). We recently attended a wedding here and the day time drinks were a nightmare, as you had one member of staff behind the bar trying to serve hundreds of drinks.

What a wonderful little hotel... ideally located, plenty of parking, clean spacious rooms, such lovely staff, fantastic value, and a great restaurant... being a Ceoliac thought I'd struggle to find something on the menu gluten free but nothing was too much trouble and dinner and breakfast were both first class.... can't ask for more than that... a real gem of old fashioned hospitality

We pleasantly surprised with our stay. The room was very good but we suffered some disturbance from late night revellers. The breakfast was good but expensive. The staff were all very pleasant and helpful.

Stayed here for an event which was being held here and we were really surprised at the very comfortable rooms and excellent breakfast we enjoyed here. The staff were very friendly and were obviously happy in their work - esp the ladies who were working in the breakfast room on 7th July. Something not found every day! Keep it up Best Western ??.

Booked this hotel as not far from a wedding we were attending in Budby. Good price too. Lovely old hotel with lots of history. What a great find, clean spacious rooms and friendly staff. Beds very comfy. Part of our party had to check in after midnight but this was no problem, staff available and to serve drinks/snacks at bar. Located in annex building on ground floor, room quite warm as hot day and could possibly benefit from air conditioning but you could open the window. Cooked breakfast was lovely, there wasn't a Veggie option though so my son just ordered the things from it that he could eat. Maybe extra portions of other items could be offered in future, as full price was still charged... The grounds are beautiful, big lawns, and lovely outside areas. Could of sat and relaxed all day if we didn't have to be somewhere. Very impressed with the customer service of Mr Fosher as I contacted him as I left my phone charger in my room and he posted this back to me. Would recommend to others and stay again if I'm ever up that way.

Spent only one night there. The room was very clean, cosy. Really can't my bed and quiet during the night. The gardens were especially beautiful. And the staff polite and helpful. Did not have breakfast there, but did have a few drinks in the bar.

Booked at short notice for a Saturday night and although there was a wedding reception and disco in full swing, room we had booked in the Georgian building was very quite, spacious and clean. Staff were extremely helpful and cheerful although obviously busy. Restaurant and evening meal were very enjoyable and breakfast plentiful. Liked the Tulip tree in the grounds.We were travelling north using the A1 and this proved to be a very convenient location. Would definitely go again.

Had a wonderful evening at the recent comedy event with two course meal. My wife and I went to with two friends and took advantage of the £100 deal that included a room and breakfast too. I was very impressed at the quality of the food we were served. I thought at £20 per head it would be ‘serve em fast, serve em cheap' but I'm glad to say it was top notch. Only two meal choices but I don't like too much choice as I'm a ditherer. Rooms were lovely and comfortable and the beds were great- we had a good nights sleep. Venue Room was very full which made manoeuvres for drinks and the loo tricky. Maybe one less table next time and charge a few quid more. Felt a bit squashed, but we managed. Staff very friendly and obliging. Would definitely recommend.

We really enjoyed our stay here. We were greeted warmly and directed to our room which was everything we had hoped for. We had dinner and breakfast and greatly enjoyed both meals. No problems with the service or the food. Unfortunately we only stayed for the one night but would certainly return if in that part of the country.

What a wonderful stay we had (2 nights) for my sister's wedding. The room was well appointed for me, my husband and our 2 boys (8 & 9 yrs). Our children had a sofa bed to sleep on that was already made up for them, we had plenty of towels, a lovely hot shower, and a comfy bed for us. The room was very well presented and lovely and clean. We had a meal on the evening we arrived which was delicious! As for the wedding, it was perfect! The wedding planner came to see my sister and I on the morning of the wedding just to run through things and she said that if we wanted to change the ceremony to outdoors (to take advantage of the the glorious sunshine we've had over this May Bank Holiday weekend) that it wouldn't be a problem. How could we resist!! The grounds are lovely and very well kept and tidy, the pergola where the ceremony was held, was spot on and all the guests enjoyed basking in the sun whilst waiting for the bride to arrive. My only criticism is that once the ceremony had finished, we felt a little rushed to have our outdoor photos taken as there was another wedding about to take place. We then moved inside to the function room upstairs which had been set up beautifully and enjoyed a delicious wedding breakfast - soup to start, chicken with veg and gravy for the main, profiteroles for dessert and coffee to finish. All served with bubbly and wine. Compliments to the chef - it really was very tasty and the soup/chicken were very well seasoned. Later in the evening, we had a buffet which had a great choice of food and tasted lovely. Overall a lovely hotel with great food and very good housekeeping! I would highly recommend and would have no hesitation in booking again. Thank you for a great wedding for my sister and a fab stay for me and my family!

We had our wedding party here yesterday after our wedding in St Lucia. The staff couldn't have been more attentive and the communication over the past few months has been faultless. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The rooms are lovely and clean. We stayed in the honeymoon suite which is really spacious with a big bathroom. My only criticism about the room would be that the radiators were red hot and with temperatures we've had this weekend it was uncomfortable getting ready and dressed for the wedding. The four poster bed was very comfortable but very creaky. Lovely dressing gowns and toiletries provided. Our guests commended the food at the reception and the breakfast was freshly cooked. I wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel. Lovely hotel with beautiful grounds

So we was invited to a wedding and decided to treat ourselves and stop over in a family room with our two children. After ringing up on the morning of the wedding to ask if our room was ready for us to change the lady on reception said we didn't have a room booked under that name and I said well you should! Can you please check again? She asked me to repeat my sir name 4 or 5 times and didn't seem to understand me. Then for some reason the phone went dead as if she put the phone down on me. By this point I was very angry. So had to ring one of the bridesmaids to see if she could find out if we had defently got a room booked. And the answer was yes. After having to go down to reception for us to check.Then we arrive at the hotel to check in go to our room to drop bags! all seems nice in room. Then after partying away at the wedding and evening it was time to make our way back to our room.I then go in the bathroom to take my makeup of and put my cotton wool in the bin to find a bin full of bloody pads there was about 10 of them I wes disgusted and hoped to god my two children would not see this. I couldn't believe we had paid £130 for this room to have to see this.when I told the reception lady the next morning when checking out she just offered a complaints form and a sorry! I would defently not stay here again and would not recommend anyone to stop here. Food was beautyful there and drinks are reasonably priced too. It was our 1st time visiting here ??

This hotel is a £5 taxi ride from the station and a 10 minute walk into the town centre. It is set in attractive grounds. It is also an attractive set of buildings. Reception was efficient. My room was £64 for the night, bed and breakfast. The bedroom was large and well appointed, with a desk to work at, and a sofa to relax on. There was a large, flat screen TV. The room also had a safety chain on the door, a safe in the wardrobe and an iron with board. The bed was very comfortable with good quality sheets. The room was attractively decorated and spotlessly clean. The towels were also good quality, as were the toiletries. The bathroom was a bit dated but the bath was a good size and the shower had good pressure. There was a heated towel rail, which was a nice bit of luxury. The breakfast was cooked to order and was good.

Great tastefully decorated spacious rooms and comfortable beds. Excellent food both in the evening and at breakfast with wide choice of foods. All dietary requirements are catered for. Very pleasant and helpful staff who can't do enough for you. Beautiful gardens. Wonderful!

We stopped off on the way to meet up with a group holiday in Yorkshire. We had a most comfortable room and a pleasant stay, enhanced by the lovely gardens, especially the sunken one. The staff were very friendly.

I stayed here on my way back up North as it's very handy for the A1, the Hotel is just out of town so no noise, a good sized car park with Barriers for added security, the staff on check in were very pleasant. My room was in one of the out buildings and a good size, sparkling clean and a very new modern bathroom (the shower was amazing), I walked into town to get some exercise as I sit on my behind all day, when I got back the room was very cold, I had turned the thermostat up on my way out but the radiator was cold, which I thought strange as the bathroom radiator was Hot, it was after 10.30 so I just plugged the oil filled radiator in and went to bed, it was the same in the morning... The breakfast was superb, good coffee and I had an omelette and fresh fruit (not on the same plate) .. The cold room was the only reason I didn't give it a 5 as it really is a nice hotel, and I will go back...

Went with a group for a church conference which was hosted around the corner. The room and bathroom was spotless - super clean and hygienic. Even had a lovely little ambience lamp in the room! The food was absolutely superb - breakfasts you couldn't ask for anything more and dinners were excellent quality home made British dishes to a very high standard. Ours included a full roast dinner one evening which was gorgeous. Only downside is that there's no spa or gym facilities. I genuinely believe with these facilities this hotel would be a 4 or 5 star.

We stayed here for one night and everything was perfect. We were given a warm welcome, the room was very clean and spacious. There was a wedding reception that evening but we were not disturbed by any noise. The breakfast was nicely cooked and there was plenty of choice. It was very busy with the wedding party guests and the staff kept everything topped up and fresh. I can definitely recommend this hotel.

A group of us stayed here in Early April in five double rooms. Check in was promptly handled. Unfortunately some of us were in rooms very close to the event rooms and couldn't sleep due to the noise and vibrations. This was unfortunate as we weren't there for the events. To avoid this it might be worth checking when rooms are booked. The rooms were perfectly presented and very clean. Breakfast was very good. We were all served very promptly and everything was cooked well and served on good hot plates. The staff were very helpful and friendly. All in all a very good night's stay.

A comfortable room, clean too. Although it was cold outside, the radiators had to be turned on by us. We booked on Half Board basis. Restaurant had some interesting dishes. I found the Rack of Lamb slightly overdone, not pink at all. Perhaps One should specify degree of cooking required?

I stayed here with my partner we had a few small issues but Deb on the front desk sorted them straight away, I can't praise her enough. The room was very clean. Will definitely stay again, thank you once again.

Stayed last weekend for a family wedding. Interesting reading the other reviews from people staying at the same time. The hotel itself is an average three star hotel and does what it says on the tin. Grounds are nothing special but it's right on a main road so they do the best with what they have. Reception is small but nicely maintained and reception staff were all excellent. Interestingly we were given a choice of paying up front on arrival or leaving an authorisation on card to allow us to charge to the room. We took the latter option which we have no problem with but I don't like being asked to pay up front for a hotel. I don't like it as it generally hints at service being below par. If they know they deliver they don't need to take your money before they deliver their service. We upgraded to one of the feature rooms which really wasn't worth it. My mum had a twin. Both rooms were in the Georgian building outside and it wasn't worth the extra money. The “feature” was a larger bed with two posts! Indeed mums room was better as ours had the windows nailed shut which meant that even with the heating off the room was far too hot. We did feel we should have been told of the rooms being outside on booking as I did say my mum is 80 and it was difficult for her. Service - the actual wedding was very well done. The room looked great. The food, always difficult at large functions, was good and the bar was well run. But the room did have its own bar. When we arrived at the hotel after the service there was another wedding and a large function party and there simply wasn't enough room. I have read other people's comments and the manager responses - saying it was busy isn't good enough. There simply wasn't the room for all the people. Not enough chairs or tables which is poor when you have a wedding as you know there are likely to be older people. This needs rectifying as it lets the hotel down. And two bar staff for three large functions just isn't enough. Drinks - a Hendricks and tonic and a Guinness came in at £13.00. Staff at the function dinner were great Breakfast was horrendous. Again to say “it was busy” doesn't cut it. The food constantly ran out and by the time you waited for what wasn't there the rest of your breakfast was cold. This needs seriously managing. Other hotels get it right so you can't just say sorry we were busy. Check out was good and the house keeping staff were first class. Car park good too. All in all - impressed with the wedding but the rest of the stay was very split.

I accompanied my mum to an Army Reunion here last weekend and had a great stay, the hotel is lovely, well run and has great rooms. My room was on the ground floor and my window opened onto the lawns and pagoda at the back of the hotel, we had a lovely stay and the staff did a great job catering for the three different events that seemed to be taking place on the same evening. Great breakfast, highly recommend this hotel

The hotel is impressive with lovely grounds and nicely furnished decor in the reception/ lounge and bar areas. The orangey is a great place to have a family afternoon tea and we enjoyed our special event . The room we stayed in was a superior double and had all the comforts you needed including ironing board and iron, tea coffee and biscuits. So for decor, room and surroundings an excellent hotel. However, the let down is the total lack of staff in the hotel, they were clearly stretched as a wedding was taking place in the same afternoon. This could be better planned and sufficient staff available in the bars etc, we spent most of the afternoon and evening looking for people to serve us. The following morning at breakfast it was chaos with far too many people to cope with demand. We ended up waiting for tables to be made up in another room so we could eat breakfast. This I felt was unacceptable. I would say the girl on reception Sue did look after us when checking in and made it possible for us to check in early after a long drive which was much appreciated.

We stayed at this hotel last weekend. We could not fault the accommodation which provided everything we required. However, we were very disappointed with the service provided. There were two weddings as well as our party of 28 people & it was obvious the management had not catered for this. They were understaffed so we were not given the service you would expect for the price we paid which did not include breakfast which was an extra.

We stopped at this hotel on the way from Kent to Teesside and found it to be very good. It is in an excellent location, being only about ten minutes walk from the centre of Retford, the room was pleasant, and the evening meal very nice. There is a very pretty garden, although a cold day in March is not the best time to sit outside. The only slight complication is that one must go outside get from the bedrooms to the dining room, but this is only a problem in bad weather.

I booked a group of 20 people in for 2 nights for a work event, and from booking to departure everyone at the hotel was really helpful and accommodating. The rooms were good, breakfast and dinner both much better than expected. Such a nice change not to have a buffet for the cooked breakfast but made to order. We also used one of the meeting rooms, which was very comfortable. Thanks to all the staff for making us so welcome.

It had been a number of years since we stayed here as a couple. I have used it several times since but had reservations about cost/value for money. My wife's complaint in the past was the high number of ‘contractors' using this hotel and the fact that many did not change out of overalls and workwear in the evening resulting in chairs becoming soiled- not pleasant to sit in. This time no overalls in evidence fortunately. The food had certainly improved - the rooms were fine, clean and large. The Orangery is a big improvement. Certainly would use it again as a couple.

We stayed at the BW West Retford Hotel for three nights and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. We always brace ourselves for disappointment, especially on the quality of hotel restaurant food when we stay away from home. We needn't have worried, because the food offering at this hotel is outstandingly good. The range of options is excellent and reasonably priced, with everything from basic pizzas to fresh food from the grill. Our choice was from the bar menu, where good hearty food is served. My husband chose the beef and ale pie on the first night and was delighted to receive a proper pie with a top and bottom crust, obviously made in the hotel kitchen instead of being a bough-in offering. I chose the scampi and was very pleased with the freshness and quality. Each night at dinner we were equally pleased with our choice, something rare in our experience. There were two weddings, a funeral tea and an 80th birthday party during our stay and none were a disturbance to us as standard residents. Our room was kept immaculately clean and well stocked with goodies and the bed was warm and comfy. A good shower, clean towels and good heating all served to make us feel at home. The hotel's public areas are warm and comfy and the gardens are a delight. For once, this is a hotel we would be happy to re-visit. Thanks to everyone for a lovely weekend

Our room (in the annex) was a good size with a very comfortable bed and strong shower (always an important feature for me). Everywhere was clean and the staff polite. Breakfast was a little disappointing, the selection for the continental breakfast wasn't very good although the fresh salmon portions were excellent if you choose that option with scrambled egg. The cooked breakfast was nothing special. Breakfast was a little overpriced in my opinion. The location and parking for the hotel was very good, with security gates for that extra peace of mind. Wifi was strong, but security on the wifi is weak, so don't use it for internet banking or similar. If you have a VPN it should be fine. Bottom line, I would definitely go back there if I needed to stay in the area.

Visited my Daughter in Retford this place is very handy just round the corner. Stayed one night not really impressed arrived at approximately 5pm some sort of conference going on the receptionist was not very welcoming she must've had a bad day. Decided to have a drink at the bar before going to the room sold out of ale they only have one. Room was very nice and quiet bed very comfortable, room check out is11am but room service knocked the door at 9am to make up the room, check out wonderful receptionist very pleasant.

We stayed here overnight for a wedding the room was very well decorated, bathroom gorgeous, bed was very comfortable and the room very clean. Found all the staff very helpful from check in,bar staff who served me at lunchtime, bar staff serving at the wedding reception in the evening and the breakfast staff you were all so friendly you all made the stay more pleasurable looking forward to coming back.

Lovely stay here for two nights for work. Freezing outside but room nice & warm. Room was massive & comfy. Good facilities & nice selection of teas & coffee. Good breakfast choice & appreciated gardens surrounding hotel. Quire close to train station & town centre.

We arrived and there was a wedding party, that didn't infer with our stay until breakfast time. The place is in easy walking distance to the town. The staff were helpful. We did make the mistake of assuming that the radiator in the room was centrally governed, only to find out after going to bed with my coat on that the thermostat in the room switched on the radiator....learn from our mistake. Breakfast was a little hectic and our order wasn't right but it was sorted. The food was good with a continental option and full English available, we had paid for breakfast so it wasn't an issue. We did have a bar meal at the hotel and that was okay too. The bed was comfortable and the room had all you needed, coffee/tea makings with biscuits, TV, table and chairs. We would stay there again.

Had Sunday lunch 4th March and it was fantastic, four adults and two small children. As well as the food the staff are amazing very polite and very attentive. Won't be long before we are back with friend's and the rest of the family.

Why did I go? Well Retford is my home town and it was my school reunion (40yrs!) The West Retford has always had a good reputation and I've picture of my grandfather outside sometime in the early 1930's. Oh yes, back to the hotel... Check in pleasant but decidedly functional. The rain came as I trudged over to the “Georgian House” - which extends the Monarchs reign in to the 1980's by my reckoning. The door was off the catch (was even at 02:00?) to the foyer which revealed its modern construction, even providing a snack vending machine and the obligatory tourist brochure rack. Upstairs (no sign of a lift) and through a noisy banging fire door, my keycard revealed a large twin room with a decent decorative standard. The bathroom looked clean and the complimentary refreshment tray brought every expectation to life. Why only three stars? Security at the foyer, a dribble of a shower and a severe shortage of electrics - nowhere to plug your phone in near the bed (how else do you charge it and let it become your alarm?) and the light switch for the room being no where to be seen other than at the entrance. Ps the meal here was very good.

This Hotel is Local, but I very rarely use it. Due to business expension I chose to host a team away day here. The communication and service we recieved from the Event Staff was perfect. On the day we enjoyed endless refreshments and an excellent hot buffet lunch. The room was perfect with all the accessories needed i.e projector flip charty and a box of tricks that had a bit of everything in it, for that one thing you probably forgot, like tape, pens scissors etc... The whole day went well and alot of that was down to the attention to detail the event staff have put into making our room hassle free. The food and service has prompted me to book a family meal to see how they get on in the restaurant that is open to the public.

The hotel is very easy to find and well situated. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The wedding itself was lovely and the food very tasty. The staff serving the meal could not do enough for you and any requests quickly fulfilled. The bar prices did not appear to be silly money either. I cannot comment on the rooms as we did not stay, but would be happy to eat here again

Nice hotel with friendly staff, nice modern room (cottage) excellent breakfast, only criticism would be thin walls and ceilings between rooms above and to the side which kept us awake on second night due to noisy neighbours.

We got a deal via a website on a room in the Georgian House. It was a large ensuite room with lots of windows but was warm and nicely decorated. The bed was comfortable. There is plenty if parking and beautiful grounds although our view was of the car park! The food is good although the restaurant and bar aren't exactly cosy but are nicely decorated. The staff were helpful. It is a 10 minute walk maximum to the town.

We had a meeting here and it was a very good venue. My only complaint was that the meeting room was really really cold and despite mentioning it to them several times, they did nothing to improve things. On the plus side the food was excellent and they followed our timings really well. The room (apart from the temperature) was ideal for our needs. The fact that they have a large car park also helped things along.

We came to the West Retford hotel for the valentines meal and it was amazing, the room was beautiful the staff were lovely and the food was amazing, we also stayed the night our bedroom was lovely warm and clean. We stayed for breakfast and Sunday lunch all the staff were so friendly particularly Audrey who is the manager we joked that we weren't leaving. We will be back we were married at the West Retford hotel in 2011 and we will always be back for special occasions thank you x

We arrived at the hotel after midnight following a concert in the nearby town of Gainsborough. The bar area was comfortable, and we were able to move tables and sofas around to accommodate about a dozen people sitting together. The staff were happy to serve us, and were very polite and discrete at all times. Retiring to the rooms in the Georgian House annex at around 3am, these proved to be larger, cleaner and better appointed than the price would suggest. Checkout was at 11am (I would have preferred 12pm) and breakfast was not included, but I would have no hesitation staying there again. Recommended.

Stayed here whilst visiting the area for a Christening at a local church. Quick check-in and our rooms were ready before the 3pm check in. We stayed in the Georgian House end of the hotel. Spacious room with sofa and comfortable double bed. The room was very warm but we were able to adjust the thermostat to suit. Bar prices reasonable and no problem in taking a drink back to the room. Breakfast was fresh and good choice of cereal, fruit and pastries. Take away cups available to take a hot drink with you. Orders taken for cooked breakfast. Overall very good value for money £70 per room with breakfast x2

This is a very delayed review but one I feel is worth posting. Me and my husband our wedding at the West Retford hotel on the 4th March 2017. We had the most amazing weekend that would not have been possible if it wasn't for the staff at the hotel. From me arriving at the hotel the day before the wedding right up untill we checked out we felt that the service we had received was excellent. I also cannot fault the planning of the wedding. Everything that we wanted was catered for. On the wedding day itself my nephew was very poorly and the hotel did everything possible to make him comfortable during the day. Even if it was making him a bed on the sofa in the bar during our ceremony. We also had a lot of guests coming from out of the area who mentioned how much they enjoyed their stay. Thank you so much for giving us the wedding day of our dreams. I would highly recommend this hotel for any wedding. Mr and Mrs Cordall

We had the pleasure of having our civil ceremony and wedding reception at the West Retford on 22nd December 2017 and the whole experience was brilliant. From the organisational skills in the preparations to the service on the day, nothing was too much trouble. We had a unexpected medical issue with mother of the groom which the staff were extremely helpful and attentive. All our guests have said what an excellent day they had. Another wedding was going on in the room upstairs and we would not have known as we did not see them. The staff in our room were very attentive and always available. Food on the day and breakfast the following day were both excellent. Could not recommend this enough as a wedding venue.

We had our wedding at the West Retford Hotel on 12 January 2018. It was a perfect venue and the staff were amazing. I would like to give a special mention to Audrey who was our co-ordinator on the day. She was fantastic at dealing with an issue that was not her fault and managed to resolve it so the day was not affected. The package we had was excellent value and the extras included (top table flowers, wedding cake to name a few) were of the highest quality. The wedding breakfast was lovely and all of our guests were complimentary about it. The hot roast pork and stuffing sandwiches in the evening went down a treat and everyone commented about how lovely they were. Overall, the hotel made our wedding day perfect!

My husband and I stayed here in December as we were going to the theatre in Retford. The hotel is a 10 minute walk into central Retford so ideally situated. On arrival there was plenty of parking and a large disabled bay ideal for us with the wheelchair. The reception was in the main building and a bit difficult to manoeuvre into but not a major problem. The hotel room was in a separate building across the car park in a purpose built block. This is accessed by a door with a code pad- our problem was I couldn't reach the pad from my chair and my husband couldn't hold me and open the door so it wasn't ideal for those in a wheelchair; luckily it was very busy so people were around (other guests) to let us in!! The room was clean and nicely appointed also large enough to get round and whilst the bathroom wasn't accessible for me I could use the toilet with a struggle.... the breakfast was a disappointment not much choice and very small portions I asked for bacon and egg and literally got 1 rasher of bacon and 1 egg perhaps I should have been more specific?! The hotel was very noisy as there was a wedding on and the sound travelled. I would stay again if I had to but it's not ideal for those who are disabled.

This was a very average stay. Whilst the outside is impressive Georgian, we were met in reception but someone who never smiled, told us to wait until she planned to tell us when we asked about breakfast and then the tiny room with no fridge just sort of made us glad it was only a one-night stay. Wifi was good.

Beautiful from the outside, fabulous gardens but inside was a different thing. When we arrived we had to wait as the Receptionist was chatting with another member of staff. Greeting was very lukewarm. Our room was nice enough but dismayed to see mould on the ceiling tiles. Like a lot of people we have and still are suffering from colds/flu so we decided to stay warm and eat at the Hotel. We were actively discouraged from eating in the Restaurant so ate in the bar. My 1st starter was wrong but the correct one was very pleasant. My main course was Seabass and it was just terrible. Some bits were overcooked and others undercooked. Not good as fish cooked correctly can make you very ill. The Bar Manager was very apologetic and offered us a free drink - but that is not what we have come to expect of Great Western Plus Hotels which we use on a very regular basis. Whilst walking from our room to Reception there was a lone lady with mobility problems and I helped her from her car to Reception to check in and then to her room, staff were not remotely interested. Very bad service.

We had our wedding here on the 29th December 2017, the staff at the hotel were excellent, nothing was too much trouble. From the moment I arrived the night before they were extremely helpful. We can't thank them enough for everything they did for us. Food was excellent, bedrooms were lovely & the whole hotel looked amazing with all the Christmas decorations up, it was truly a magical day. Thank you all so much. We will definitely be booking a night away & meal here for our one year anniversary

Me and my partner decided to visit West Retford after prior visits to their sister hotel's. We stayed in room 64 a beautiful room with 4 poster bed, really clean and warm which was exactly what we needed after the December weather. We attended the New Year Gala, welcomed by friendly staff a bubbly prosecco and canapés (to which a chef personally brought me some extras after i expressed how beautiful they were). The room was well decorated and the food was beyond superb especially when they were catering for such a large amount of people. The atmosphere was buzzing all night even throughout the meal with the female singer who was a delight to listen too. Upon the countdown to the new year we were all moved outside to watch the amazing firework display with a warm bacon roll making the entrance to 2018 magical and equally as fattening which in my opinion the exact way i wanted to enter the new year! It was at this point we realised there was also a wedding on, a matter you would not have even noticed as there were always staff around to help if you required anything!! I recommend this hotel for any functions or if your lucky enough a romantic weekend away.

Can't recommend this hotel enough for providing the fabulous venue for our daughter's December wedding. It was faultless. There were 2 weddings on the same day but you wouldn't have known. The staff were very attentive and service was great. There was always enough staff so service was prompt. The food was outstanding and they made personal service to the bride and groom. Fully recommend

Booked for New Year Gala night did know what to expect re hotel but recieved a warm and friendly welcome from reception staff , check in was easy and given information about the evening .The room was warm and spacious and very clean ,yes you have to walk to the main building which is about 100 yards away but not a problem.Even though it was a special occasion and the hotel also had wedding in the room above the food and the service was excellent .Hope to visit again.

My partner and I checked in on Boxing Day and were impressed with the grounds and overall appearance of the hotel. We arrived just as a rather large family left. We were not acknowledged for over two minutes - I assume the receptionist was finishing checking out the other family but a polite acknowledgment from her would have been nice. When we were checked in we found the service to be polite but vague, and not very friendly. We stayed in one of the feature rooms and found it to be nicely decorated and roomy. We had booked in for dinner and found the service there to be good. The menu was rather limited but I think this was because it was a Christmas menu, we had actually found the room service menu to be more appealing. Due to the lack of dinner bookings the actual restaurant was closed and we were sat in the lounge area. This was fine except our table was never properly laid and cutlery was bought over after our meals had been put on the table with no serviettes. The quality of the food for the main course was disappointing and in my opinion wasn't worth the money spent. Breakfast was in the restaurant, both the service and the food was good. Check out was very similar to check-in. We realised afterwards we didn't receive the complimentary bottles of water advertised with the feature rooms.

We came here on Christmas night as it is very convenient for my parents house where we left the children overnight. We stayed in the Georgian annex, the room was clean and comfortable was easy to adjust the temperature and we had a window that was easy to open to get the right temperature to sleep.The facilities were great and we were lucky it was a quiet night and we were not disturbed. Breakfast the next day was excellent in fact my husband gave it 9 out of 10 it was a choice of full cooked breakfast or you could have the pastries fruit and yoghurt. Check in was very easy and efficient. It is many years since we visited the hotel and was very pleasantly surprised, it seems to have been updated it was very well maintained and is in a lovely spot. We definitely will stay again

my niece had her wedding at the great western. from us walking through the door it was the perfect venue. all the staff were very friendly and helpful. lyndsays and lees wedding was amazing the service at the reception desk was excellent and the room was just right for my husband and myself. everything was faultless thank you for an amazing day

Lovely looking hotel in lovely grounds.arrived at100am after a nightmare journey in thick fog.checked in and shown to my room in Georgian house by night porter.room obviously recently refurbished.large walk in shower.room was overwarm but being stiff after a long journey did not feel like scrabbling around to turn the radiator down.that would have solved the problem.loses one star for breakfast offering.staff again brilliant but no rolls only bread for toasting which is just as well because it was hard and dry.limited choices of cereals and poor quality watery orange juice.however cooked items to order were excellent.however the universally charming staff and physical appearance of building make these niggles well worth putting up with and I would happily stay here again price was very reasonable too

My daughter, myself and grandchildren stayed in one room. The room was very clean and comfy beds. The children's menu was very good. Staff very friendly. We had full english breakfast which was also very good.

The accommodation was very good with helpful staff at reception and at all other parts of hotel in restaurant for dinner as well as breakfast. There was no problem with parking and the room I was allocated was big with a bath in the bedroom on a platform. The walk in shower in the bathroom was nice and big and the towels were soft and large and all other amenities in the room were clean and very good.

How can you say this is a plus hotel, I'm a member select and find that walking between buildings with Bob hat and gloves on to have a evening meal is total not what Best western is about . The room (35) was clean and warm but the rest of the building was cold at the bar most are wearing coats with gloves nearby .. bar staff not available for at least 15 mins...then you find out you have to press the bell hidden behind the the hatch which covers it ? breakfast the same , you have to get dressed for the outside to join the main building ... I will not be visiting again BW CHANGE THIS HOTELS STATUS

We had a very pleasant one night stay in this grand old building. Pleasant, helpful staff and good restaurant for breakfast and evening meal. Ideally located not far off the A1 and a good break point for anyone heading north from the south as as we were.

My wife and I stayed over at this hotel after a day at a local Spa, room 29, which was very pleasant and clean,we enjoyed a lovely evening meal with wine which we thought excellent value and quality. The reason I have left only 4 stars was a breakfast,service was slow other guest who arrived and ordered after us were served first,tea was at best tepid which was rectified with fresh cups and a new hot pot, unfortunately only 2 of the items on the English breakfast were hot,which spoilt what would have been a tasty breakfast,didn't bother reporting this because of the previous wait. We stayed here for one night. The receptionist was friendly and helpful on check in. We were in a room in the Georgian building, the room was lovely, large with a four poster bed and very clean, having a bottle of water and a chocolate bar provided in the room is a thoughtful gesture. We were disappointed in the morning to find there was no hot water in bathroom, so had to make do with a cold shower, when I took the towel off the towel rail to dry myself I found it smelt really badly. We reported both these issues to the receptionist on our way through for breakfast. We did receive money off our bill by way of an apology and compensation. It was disappointing that we had to ask for items on the buffet to be replaced at breakfast, rather than staff being proactive in making sure that everything was available for guests. We felt breakfast was just ok, nothing special. Overall we were quite disappointed.

This was my second time staying at this hotel and I don't want to stay anywhere else in the future. It is very convenient to town and since I do not drive - every where I want to go is well within walking distance. The staff is always welcoming, friendly, and helpful. As I travel from the US, this is very important to me as I want to "feel at home." The grounds are always well maintained and the rooms and common areas are always clean and tidy. I look forward to seeing you again in the spring!

We had a great weekend at a wedding function. It was well organized, the service was friendly and it is a perfect location. The food was good and the breakfast was probably one of the best we have had . We loved the rooms , comfortable , well equipped, quiet but probably getting ready for a refresh , especially the bathrooms . Lovely location and it was great to stroll the gardens . We went with little people and they loved it , the space , the safety and the family friendly focus . Great hotel , would recommend

Several visits to this hotel and never disappointed. The executive room in the Georgian annexe was spacious, well decorated and spotless, however the radiator in the bathroom (room 38) is so close to the toilet that you have to sit at an awkward angle to avoid burning your leg. The staff, many of whom are very young, are always friendly, cheerful and helpful and coped admirably covering more than one bar area. Evening meal delicious. Only complaint would be that at breakfast we weren't advised we needed to order poached or fried eggs and the buffet only had scrambled. Will certainly return

We got married on November 18th,firstly I would like to say thank you to Jessica for arranging our wedding and pretty much doing everything for us. She is excellent at her job and took all the wedding preparations out of our hands,Dale and I thought she was brilliant.The next person I'd like to say a huge thank you to is Audrey she is an amazing lady,put me at ease and I instantly felt relaxed with her she looked after me all afternoon on my wedding day and I was so grateful to her for being with me and walking me all the way through the day. All the staff at west retford were great unfortunately I can't remember all there names but they worked really hard to make our day special.we were put in room 36 which was lovely it had a big mirror for getting ready ,the bed was comfy and it was lovely and clean,perfect.The food was great even though there was another wedding going on downstairs you wouldn't have known,Audrey does a great job of keeping everything running smoothly,nothing was to much trouble. We would highly recommend west retford as a wedding venue it was a perfect setting, lovely food and and service,great staff.we would like to say a massive thank you for making our day so special. Had a really good stay at this hotel, staff are really friendly. Room was clean and nice, brilliant Wi-fi service all included. A great breakfast which is a service style no buffet here. Not a bad rate too. Close to town and place of work.

Room was very clean and moden bed very comfortable the food was very good and plentiful.The only thing that let this hotel Down was one very rude staff and I think she may have been a senior staff.she kept putting notices up on the doors saying residents only and closing the bar in the residents bar at 9.30 so we had to keep ringing the bell to be served.She was ok if the work men were in the bar but once they went so did she after closing down.The rest of the staff were very friendly but very young and in training and doing well.This hotel is set in very nice and large grounds that are well looked after which are great for weddings.

On firstglance being put inthe cottages thought was lovely but the night was a night mare after getting back at 11.30 pm from a great show we went to bed only tobe woke by banging and talking up stairs after been awake for 20 mins reported this to night staff thinking this would be sorted only for it to continue till 5 pm the lady onreception told us the night staff had recived our call but obviously nothing was done as it carried on the hotel itself was good the room was good.but dont go into the cottages if you need to sleep

This was our 3rd visit at this hotel! All staff friendly and helpful! Rooms spacious and clean! Ample parking. Breakfast was plentiful and well cooked. Convenient for Retford town centre. Highly recommend and will certainly visit again.

We stayed the weekend of 3rd November for two nights . The hotel is very pleasant with good free wifi and lots of parking . We stayed in room 58 which was very nice ,clean & spacious . The shower is above the bath which was a little difficult , as I have recently had hip replacement. But once in the shower pressure was fabulous. For a three star hotel we were pleasantly surprised at the little extras , such as shower caps , so important if you have long thick hair ! Many 4* hotels don't provide them so I was delighted . The breakfast were excellent as were the waiting staff . The free newspapers to read were also a lovely touch . The only gripe we had , was it is a very popular hotel for functions & weddings . There was a function each night . The Friday night was fine . We had arrived at 8.30pm having driven up from London and once we had settled in ,we were able to get drinks & snacks in the bar and relax . The bedrooms are in a different building so noise isn't an issue . The next day we were out immediately after breakfast . When we got back at 6:30 there was a wedding in full swing . Which was lovely . However it also meant we were unable to get a seat in the bar, or in fact anywhere to have a drink and snacks or supper in the hotel . We went back out to a local pub despite being exhausted after a long day out . This would be the one factor that would stop us going back . It would be helpful if the hotel management could think of the other guests in such a situation and set aside a small area for guests not attending functions , so everyone can enjoy the facilities they have paid for. If the management have already done this , then reception should inform guests.

Booked in for 4 nights, the staff were really helpful and very friendly my room was really comfortable cleaned everyday the restaurant food was very good. We had breakfast and an evening meal all 4 nights. Would highly recommend staying.

Stayed at the Best Western West Retford Hotel on Friday 13 October to Sunday 15 October 2017 - our first UK hotel stay for four years! Our old college in Retford was holding a reunion in the hotel so we decided to stay in the same hotel. I checked online to see what the availability was like and spotted the ' Romantic room deal' which included the evening meal on arrival , flowers, presecco and chocolate dipped strawberries! I tried to phone the hotel to check the availability in September and the phone line seemed to be revert to answer phone in the early evening whenever we phoned over several nights. It seemed to be better in afternoon when we phoned and booked a room with the package. Our son informed us of a crucial medical appointment on early Friday afternoon so we were late setting off arriving at the hotel at just after 7:00. The car park is entered via a barrier and code is needed to exit the hotel drive , which can be obtained from reception. The receptionist was very pleasant and had various items ready for us including two door cards and various codes written down on a card. We had to give our debit card over to set up a payment for our weekend stay. She explained that our room , room 55, was in the Georgian block , outside the door turn right and through the door 100 metres in front. The Georgian block is a seperate , two storey block , possibly existing as an external stable block in an earlier life! A code is needed to enter the block and then we had to ascend a flight of 16 steps to reach the first floor where our room was. Be warned there are no lifts in the hotel, which it does say on the hotels website. We then had to walk the full length of the building as our room was right at the rear! On arrival we could not , as ancient non hotel users, figure out how to use the door cards! Eventually gave up and phoned the reception on my mobile and they patiently explained that the card just needed to be put in and immediately taken out for the door to unlock! Walking into the room we were amazed by the size of the room and the facilities on offer. On the bed was a huge bunch of flowers and alongside the bed was a settee with a table. Resting on the table were an ice bucket holding a bottle of presecco , two glasses and two slates with eight chocolate dipped strawberries on each! I hiked back to the car and struggled up to our room with our luggage. Then we walked down to The Orangery Restaurant for our evening meal. Evidently the deal we had taken allowed us to take a meal up to the value of £20 each but drinks were not included. The menus were in ' a bundle' of eight seperate items that the waitress was struggling to juggle with as the main menu was in a heavy polished wooden folder with other special menus loose and trying to slide off the folders - one for each of us! The food was ok and we had a pudding to finish off, but we thought that we look elsewhere for our future evening meals. We made our way back to our room , unpacked and removed the six cushions and throws from the bed in order to watch TV , on the wall , from bed! We had a tray with tea , coffee and biscuits provided on the shelves by the door but no fridge. It did have a safe although at first sight we thought it was a microwave! In the morning we prepared ourselves , I was really impressed with the shower, as I could get under it - not always the case with my 6' 4" height and good heat and power. We went back down The Orangery for breakfast , the prices for the different meal types were on the menus which confused me as I did not know if they would be extra- as it turned out they were included! The reunion was held in the bar area and outside on the bar patio. The weather was glorious so we were able to spread out and mix with the other ex-students moving round the many outside tables. We had booked a meal for lunch in The Orangery and four of us ate a light lunch in there. The service was very good and again the food was ok. The hotel became very busy that night as there were two functions taking place in the main building . However the noise from the discos were not apparent in the accommodation as the rooms are seperate . The car park was packed , however it was only later that I discovered how large the car park to the left of the Georgian house was - it extends all alongside our block and continues further back having at least spaces for 100 cars. Our friends eventually went back home and some stayed the night - those who stayed all commented on how spacious the rooms were. We did see a single room which was part of the old terraced housing on the right hand side of the main building. The terrace had been cleverly converted into rooms each having its own 'front' door . A good job that I did not knock on the window as each room appears to have only one but the door is in between the windows! We will certainly risk more hotel adventures in the future and hoping to return to Best Western in Retford for further reunions in the future.

Ate here for Sunday lunch and was very disappointed. The beef was nice and tender however everything else appeared to have been microwaved. The Yorkshire pudding was pre cooked and warmed - leaving it rubbery and inedible. Vegetables were bland and tasteless. Definitely the worst Sunday lunch in town

Clean comfortable and welcoming. Excellent all round. Nice grounds and bar. Drinks not overpriced as in some hotels! Already planning next weekend away There is also a great restaurant not far from hotel called Dante's highly recommended this also.

To celebrate a special birthday eleven members of our family travelled from north and south to meet mid way at The Best Western, Retford. We had a wonderful weekend. All the staff we met were helpful and courteous and went out of their way to accommodate our requests. We were all very pleased with our spacious and recently decorated rooms. Breakfasts were great and getting a fried egg was no problem at all! We also ate one evening in the restaurant and enjoyed our meal very much. We felt very well looked after. The hotel had a lovely feel and we would have no hesitation in returning for another stay.

We had our wedding reception at the West Retford this month and we couldn't be happier with the service we received! Everyone loved our day, from the food to the venue. The hotel was so accommodating with our slightly odd requests by not having a package wedding and by having a 'sweetheart table' for the bride and groom. We ended up being an hour late with the food because the receiving line took so long but the food was still delicious and absolutely lovely! The staff worked so hard and we are so delighted at how our day went. The West Retford is a family favourite from 20 years living in Retford, and it was wonderful to have our wedding reception here. It's well worth a visit for a wedding, to stay, for food or for coffee. Thank you all!

Last time we came we were 10 minutes outside the aft tea cut off tim Following the obvious question The young waiter gave a sharp intake of breath and no Mmmm Ok negotiation needed here a cup of tea? 10 mins later response is yes This time the approach was similar as was the timing but the response was positive And it was lovely on the lawn

Stayed on business, had a room in the cottage block. There is some road noise but it didn't bother me. The food in the restaurant is good, but as you are close to town you can walk to a restaurant if you want to. Nice breakfast, and the staff were cheerful and efficient. Other BW hotels have electric vehicle charging and this hotel has plenty of car park space and could easily have a charger and be on the Tesla destination charger map.

We had a terrible experience at this hotel. We were staying there due to my best friend's wedding being nearby. Due to both check in and the wedding being at 2pm, I called twice in advance to see if we could check in early (I was maid of honour in the wedding, therefor I wouldn't be able to check in unless it was early in the day). I was told that it wouldn't be a problem to check in after the wedding, in the early hours of the morning, as it was 24 hour check in. They said they'd hold our room as they knew we'd be coming. So it seemed the problem was solved. However, when we arrived at the hotel around 2.15am, we were told our booking wasn't even in the system, despite booking 9 months before and calling twice in the week before the booking. We were told later that someone had taken our room due to an error. Not good. Following on from the hotel having given away our room, we then were given a room with no electricity, resulting in us wanting to leave, as by this point we were angry and exhausted. We asked the night porter if we could check out and get a refund and he said he wasn't sure if he could do that, which put us in a position where we felt like we were forced to stay. He then moved us to a 'cottage room', which was cold and has a flickering light. When we asked what time breakfast was served to, we were told 10.30am. The next morning, we arrived for breakfast at 10.15am only to be told it had finished at 10am. At this point we asked to speak to a manager and we're dealt with by the assistant manager, Pam, who was very short with us and not at all concerned by our complaint. We eventually got a part refund and when we asked why it wasn't a full refund (which is something I wouldn't usually push for, but we were so frustrated that such a special day, which had been planned so far in advance, had been sullied by the hotel's many errors), she explained that it wasn't possible as the hotel had to pay commission to booking.com. This infuriated us. Surely, when the hotel has so royally messed up, the commission it pays to its partners shouldn't be the concern of guests? We have since had contact with the hotel's owner, only to be given a list of excuses (with admission of all errors) but no compensation. All round it was a terrible experience. I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone.

We stayed here as we were attending a friends wedding who were marrying at the hotel , it was amazing , the hotel and grounds were outstanding the staff are friendly and extremely helpful , we were allowed to check in early cant praise it enough , the room was lovely and the food was absolutely gorgeous

I would recommend any guest to avoid the cottage rooms within this hotel. Although the room was nice I didn't manage a wink of sleep due to the continuous noise of traffic - extremely disappointed with the BW! These rooms should not be provided to hotel residents

We got married here on Saturday the 2nd September .from booking the venue to the day off the wedding nothing was to much trouble...we got married outside... the grounds are stunning the food was amazing as our guest kept telling us....the staff were so polite and friendly we had the dukeries suit wow a stunning bridel suit.. most off our guest stayed over and all loved there rooms..breakfast was lovely... highly recommend if ur looking for a wedding venue it has everything and more ...thank you to Jessica and Audrey for making our day perfect in every way possible.....

Have stayed at this hotel before nearly two years ago. What a shame. The standards have dropped considerably. The menu in the restaurant has NOT changed. The staff were slightly sour and either overworked or just didn't care. The rooms were tired and not as comfortable as before. Overall experience was disappointing. Heated towel rail in bathroom states 'Beware Very Hot', rubbish. They were never on so we had damp towels every day. Rooms were dark. At the buffet breakfast we had NO fried eggs. They had to be ordered separately perhaps 24 hours before. Staff were surly and rude. Hotel was obviously catering for the wedding trade (can't blame them for that), one on the Friday, Saturday and the Bank Holiday Monday but to the detriment or Best Western regular users of their Hotels. Could not use the thousands of Good Will points we have gained on using other Best Western Hotels. We will not be staying in Retford again and am considering whether other Best Western Hotels have gone the same way. Always found Best Western to be 'Good Value for Money' , not cheap but good value. Not any more . Sorry.

We stayed here when visiting relatives. I don't think I would stay again as some of the basic and small things are missing. On arrival there was no space in the car park (but a stack of rubbish and building materials in one corner which could have been moved to make more space). There was a wedding on but all the same you do expect to find a space in the car park! The reception is not especially welcoming. the woman seems to sit behind a wooden board so you can't really see her! We ate in the restaurant as it was late when we arrived (restaurant closes at 9.30). The women who greeted us was not especially friendly and barked 'have you booked'? We said no and she showed us to a table. Non-one came in after us so I suspect it was a gut reaction to wanting no new customers (it was about 9pm) and I suppose they were wanting to close up as soon as they could. The meal was fair and fresh for the price. At breakfast there is a good choice but why no separate spoon for the beans and the egg! The pot of tea we were brought was nearly cold! Maybe it had been standing a while. The staff are mostly friendly but seem quite inexperienced. Overall this was not cheap (although the area probably isn't the cheapest either) but I think in future I would rather pay a little more and get better quality. Also bear in mind there in no air conditioning and our room was like a sauna all night! Not the best stay I have ever had!

We were visiting the wildlife trusts in the area and chose this hotel by chance. There was a wedding going on but we were placed in the cottages which were far enough away to not be disturbed. The hotel is a two minute walk from Retford which i found to be quite an unusual place. Beautiful grounds and I must mention the amazing breakfast which had everything you would want including hash browns & black pudding with an option to have the eggs done how you like. Great start to the day.

A good hotel. Has very good grounds. Appears to be very popular for weddings. Staff are all very helpful and polite. Breakfast was good but no one was keeping an eye for when teh food runs out. Guests were informing staff when an item had run out.Which was a little frustrating. We had a problem with teh bedside light. When reported to teh reception, it was fixed promptly. As I mentioned earlier, this hotel is popular for wedding dos and parking is definately a problem when there is a wedding on. A very good hotel if there is no wedding on!!

Stayed here as just off the A1 on my way to travelling to family. Booked through booking.com and received a very good deal, room only £58. The room was spacious, quiet and very clean. The receptionist staff were friendly. I didn't eat at the hotel so cannot comment on the food etc. I would visit again as the area of Retford looked interesting.

Stayed here for 2 nights for a family wedding. Our room was very spacious and clean, staff were lovely and friendly. The weather was great so were able to have the ceremony in the garden which was fab. Food at the reception was lovely and came out hot. Also buffet at the night time reception was great. Would definitely recommend

Unplanned over night stay in Retford. Last minute booking and we got a double room in one of the cottages not in the main building. The room was really spacious, very clean and comfortable. One of the best beds I've ever slept in! Would definitely stay again and recommend to others.

We stayed here for a friends wedding o saturday firstly i phoned to ask if we were able to check in slightly early to dump our bags as we had to be at the wedding venue at 2pm and unfortunately check in was also 2pm to be told No.. then after asking if we could leave our bags at reception we were then told we could check in 1hour early for an aditional £20.. The hotel its self was ok quite a nice room unfortunately our room was overlooking the bins but the room was lovely very clean and just what we needed that was untill the next morning when we were woken up by the housekeeping team banging on the door wanting to clean the room when we were told check-out wasn't untill 11am!!! And to top it all off we had no hot water for a shower in the morning!!. A very disappointing stay for the money paid.

We have just returned from one night at the hotel. We were given room 7 in the outbuilding block. First impressions of the main hotel were good but the walk to the room took the shine off walking past the bins! To realise our room overlooked the bin holding area. The room itself was a large family room good sized double bed and single bed decor was o.k. and fitted with the age of the building. The bathroom was a huge disappointment large but needs improving simple item was a light bulb not working above the sink which housekeeping should pick up on. But the tiling around the bath was awful moldy and gaps where grout should be maintenance had tried to rectify and really bodged it. For £109 for B & B for one night I expected to have a modern clean bathroom. As the hotel was full we had no chance of moving rooms. We were told on a number of times well we are full! There was other small points which also added to our view of the hotel. Another simple to solve problem was the tv remote didn't work so we asked for more batteries they didn't have any at reception and we was told as we are full we might not be able to get another remote or batteries. We eventually did get some batteries but it did not solve the problem but no other offer of assistance was given. The outside door to access this room and room number 6 bangs very loudly as the door arm seems loose with a little boy sleeping and guests coming back at 2am was not ideal. Finally there seems to be no sound insulation between the floor and ceiling of the downstairs rooms we could hear conversations, snooring, toilet flushing so overall not a restful night. Breakfast was ok nothing special ages to be checked off list, ages to ask for hot drinks and no attempt to ask if we wanted anything off the menu such as fried or poached eggs or porridge etc. I wouldn't want to stop here again if in a similar room especially at that rate.

Three guests had travelled by Car from Liverpool for a 2 pm wedding. In Retford. They needed to shower and change for this event. But hotel said sorry cannot have room before 2pm. Eventually they alllowed them in half an hour early. But with a cost of £20 for each room. If they were cleaned and ready why did they have to charge. After all the whole wedding dinner and evening do were at the same hotel. How Best Western Differ from Holland who could not do enough for you. AT NO EXTRA COST, SHAME on you Retford..breakfast was great( full English) but let down by penny pinchiing room rate. Will noon shop again.

Attended friend's daughter's wedding nearby and was booked in to this hotel by them. Very good hotel with clean and comfortable rooms. Staff were friendly and helpful. Receptionist was a little 'frosty' but that may have just been a north/south thing. Breakfast was excellent with prompt service. Apparently there was a bit of noise from another Party on the Friday night but hotel made a good will gesture to those affected with an apology. Job done and everyone happy again.

We stayed overnight at this hotel on our way North on the A1. Room was comfortable and beds were good. We arrived late so hotel was quiet but sound insulation between the rooms not particularly good and we could hear the TV in the next room in the morning. Breakfast was very good with a good choice of freshly prepared cooked dishes.

My daughter and I stayed here for 2 nights. We had a twin room which was modern and spacious. Room was clean. Staff were mostly friendly. We were disappointed with the breakfast - our 1st morning it was very unorganized, we waited for ages before any one came to take our room number, and when a staff member came she wasn't very helpful, we were not offered tea or coffee, but the food was good. On our second morning the restaurant staff were much more helpful, we were offered tea and coffee but the food wasn't so great. I would stay there again.

We stayed here for one night last week it's a lovely hotel also my son and daughter in law got married here in April this year and it was amazing all the wedding staff ever first class nothing was to much trouble for any of them at all. They all had smiles all day long and helped make there day really special. We had a meal it was good food and good quality and plenty and the price was good. The rooms are really nice the bed was very comfortable and there was all the things you usually get in a hotel like tea and coffee and bathroom toiletries, the towels were very clean and nice and white. There is plenty of space for parking your car it also has safely barriers to the entrance and exit which is good and added safety for your car. It's a short walk into the centre of Retford town so if you do not want to drive that's good. Its not an over priced hotel for what you get it's up there with a good 4 star hotel I would recommend it for a stay you could do a lot worse and pay more, also I would highly recommend it for weddings as we all really enjoyed our son and daughter in laws day.

The hotel was lovely, we were at a wedding and stayed in a separate building. Room was clean. Staff were mostly very pleasant . Breakfast was a bit disappointing and have had better . The wedding package was excellent . Attention to detail was good and food was excellent

Now this is more like it, lovely hotel, great staff, fast wi-fi and free, as it should be these days. Really good comfortable rooms and an excellent Breakfast, freshly cooked no dry buffets here. Thoroughly recommend this Hotel

Retford is a centrally located town for travelers that want a place to relax while they travel out on day trips. The Best Western Retford is a comfortable hotel, with clean rooms and good prices. There are lovely gardens at the back of the hotel for a walk or place to sit and enjoy if the weather permits. For us, it poured with rain the three nights that we were there so that was not the case. Breakfast is standard hotel fare with a cold/hot bar and served English breakfast. Food was tasty. Dinner was a three course meal served to our group and was delicious and wait staff friendly and accommodating. Rooms were in different locations and our block of rooms was across the parking lot in a different building than the reception/pub/dining area. This was fine, even in the rain. The door is locked with a code to get in, although many times it was propped open and it had been yanked open so you were never sure if it was really locked. If I was traveling on my own, this may have made me nervous, but as a group - no biggie. Desk staff were friendly, not above and beyond helpful as we have experienced at other BW's, but nothing to complain about. Everyone has their own style. Retford the town is within walking distance and an easy walk. I would recommend to others who are traveling in the area. We might stay there again if needed to, but would look for other options as well that would accommodate our driver with a free room versus having to pay for the room.

lovely Hotel very clean room Staff brilliant we had a deal which we couldn't fault .Walked round Retford really enjoyed the whole experience. will go again. Food and service first class. Grounds really well cared for and beautiful.

The staff were very friendly and attentive. The hotel is set in a peaceful setting with a lovely terrace and gardens. I booked a cottage with roll top bath to pamper myself and while the room was lovely, there was no mini-fridge or air conditioning - temperatures were soaring for first few days. A livery experience.

Country House style hotel in spacious and attractive grounds. I had an executive room which was comfortable and well equipped. The staff were helpful and breakfast good. A few down sides over housekeeping stopped the score being higher. The shower screen was stuck to the bath, now this could have been on purpose but did not look like it. A chewing gum wrapper was inside one of the cups on the service tray and an empty biscuit wrapper on the floor. Part of the floor did appear to have been vacuumed. All that being said would stay here again.

I don't normally write reviews but I was so impressed with this hotel and their outstanding service they provided for my daughters wedding that I had to. From our first arrival on the Friday afternoon they took such excellent care of us. Nothing was too much trouble and everything was done with a smile. The food in both the restaurant and at the wedding breakfast was excellent quality and the staff were friendly and efficient. The bedrooms were spotless and well maintained too. I would happily recommend this hotel to anyone.

We did not stop at the hotel so i cannot comment on that We went for afternoon tea which i can say was lovely well presented Service was exerlent the staff where very good and nothing was to much trouble for them The hotel was clean and the ground are lovely

Stayed for a weekend with family and was pleasantly surprised at his nice the hotel was. There were a couple of weddings taking place whilst we were there but as the bedrooms are in a separate block, we didn't hear any noise from the parties and the super comfy beds meant everyone got a good nights sleep. The staff were all extremely helpful and always smiling, there was a great selection at breakfast and if you have dinner in the restaurant make sure to save room for the yummy desserts.

This hotel is one of the best I have stayed at to date. The hotel is set in picturesque grounds and the rooms are second to none. Comfortable and well maintained. My room is of substantial size where work can be undertaken in a relaxing environment. The train station is local, so commuting elsewhere in the UK is easy. I shall be staying at this hotel on a regular basis.

I use this hotel for work and enjoy staying here. The rooms are always spotlessly clean and the beds are wonderful. Dinner is relaxed (only ever eaten in the bar area) and the choice is fair. The outside terrace area looks lovely but due to the British weather have not yet tried dinner al fresco. Breakfast has the usual buffet style cold offerings and a cooked selection it is always fresh and served quickly. The staff are polite and professional. Would recommend this hotel.

Stayed here for a night whilst on a course nearby . Plenty of parking, room is lovely and breakfast was spot on. Breakfast was 6.30 til 9.30 during the week believe on weekends it changes to 7.00 til 10.00. Not sure about bar etc as I went to the garage up the road and bought a sandwich and drink to have in my room.

Stayed just one night en route to London from Scotland. Convenient location not far from motorway. Lovely old building contains the main areas with reception, restaurant & bar. The bar opens out to the most lovely gardens with plenty of seating outside. Service throughout was friendly & professional. The meals we had in the bar area were ok, nothing special, would assume they would be better in the main restaurant. Our room was perfectly fine overlooking the gardens in a separate annexe. Would love to stay again if in the area

Brilliant service, very good food for dinner and breakfast and very good staff And a very clean and tidy hotel having never been there Would fully recommend it to anybody stay at and eat. If you like your breakfast then you won't be disappointed by the selection or quality

Hotel was great. The food was wonderful with plenty of choice especially at breakfast. When we arrived there were 2 Wedding parties at the hotel and we wondered if sleep would be disturbed. The rooms were just next to the main entrance to the hotel and I have to say that it was the best nights sleep I have had in a hotel ever. Bed was so comfortable that we slept late. Also close to a number of places to visit

We attended a wedding here which was absoluteley superb, gorgeous big rooms with lots of character and staff who go out of their way for you! Outdoors has lots of very picturesque views extra suitable for photos, child friendly with lovely food

The west Retford hotel serves afternoon Tea old fashion style. A friend and I arrived early for our booking and the hotel seemed quiet but you soon realise that the staff are busily seeing to customers yet maintaining an air of serenity, we ordered a drink and informed staff of our booking, they happily offered to serve our tea outside if we preferred, which on the unusual hot sunny day we were pleased to accept the offer. The staff said they were happy for us to enjoy our time in the sun for however long we wanted to and to let them know when we were ready for Tea to be served. This was a lovely gesture and my friend and I had plenty of chat time before asking the for Tea to be served. The three tier plate came with an assortment of sandwiches, smoked salmon, beef, egg and ham daintily cut and crustless of course. There were scones with clotted cream and jam, delicious, on their tier was fresh strawberries and small decorations of meringue which were light and melt in the mouth consistency. One tier held miniature cakes, chocolate, carrot, mini Victoria sponge, cream slices and one more cake I cannot remember mainly because we did not finish the plate although streamline in looks when it first arrived you certainly have more than enough to fill yourself to satisfaction. We also ordered a mini bottle of prosecco each at the additional price of £6.95 per bottle. It is worth noting that although smaller than half size bottles there is enough in each bottle for two full flute glasses and it seemed the very thing to be drinking sat in the glorious garden which is well well maintained and a delight to gaze at throughout the tea. You do get a choice of tea or coffee, we choose the coffee and asked to be served after we had finished eating. The coffee was in a large pot with enough for a few cups each. The staff were all polite and welcoming and made you feel you could stay as long as you wanted. A very enjoyable way to pass the time of day with a friend but would be equally enjoyable for a family Tea with time to sit together or wander through the garden.

Booked in for a Saturday evening, plenty of parking on arrival and check in was quick and efficient. Room was nice but at nearly £130 for B&B I'd expect it to be. We were out on the Saturday night so didn't eat at the hotel. On returning to our room Saturday evening, next door was already fast asleep. Listening to the loud snoring through the wall really did get quite annoying. Thankfully I was still asleep so missed the "other noises" my wife had to endure from the room Sunday morning! There's nothing worse than hearing your room neighbour(s), there really should be mandatory regulations on having all hotel rooms soundproofed, usually it's a next door TV at a ridiculous volume that annoys. Room was very clean, good power shower and heating | all amenities worked very well. Breakfast room was a bit odd, seemed totally out of sync with the rest of the hotel. Garish modern decor more in keeping with the looks of budget hotel. When we arrived there wasn't any orange juice, fruit bowl or white bread. Whilst eventually replenished it made for a disjointed sitting. Hot food was cooked to order, surprised it wasn't buffet style. The food was served quickly from ordering and was excellent, very hot and tasty. Check out, like check in was quick and efficient. All staff we came across we're very nice and in particular the two in the breakfast room whom were working their socks off! Overall a very good hotel, we would happily stay here again if needed.

Arriving at this hotel we were immediately impressed by the expanse of land around the buildings. There is plenty of parking available, including disabled, secured by a barrier. We were early so enjoyed a bar snack before booking in. The staff we very welcoming and offered excellent advice to us. Booking in was easy however, we would have liked a little more information at the time. Rooms are situated in an adjacent building. This hotel is popular for functions and weddings so this is an advantage. We booked in to a suite and were immediately impressed with its size. A very large sitting room, good sized bedroom and first class bathroom. Unfortunately the room was very hot and we could not lower the heat or turn off the radiators. Fortunately there were three fans available. Next day the heating was turned down and the windows freed. Meals were served in the main building, were of good quality and served by friendly staff. The staff in this hotel are excellent and an asset to the property. Minor irritations were put right with the minimum of fuss and we were well looked after. The sitting room in the suite is very large and well appointed. It would benefit from a rearrangement of the furniture to make it more like a sitting room and less like a waiting room. A good sized table and chairs allows for room service to be eaten in comfort and not from a coffee table (there isn't one!) or on the bed. We did enjoy our stay and will certainly return next time we are in the area (hope suite is available!)

We recently stayed at the West Retford Hotel and enjoyed a comfortable and stress free time there. Check-in was quick and easy and everything was well explained regards the room, after hours access and meal and breakfast times. We had booked for one night as a stop over having got tickets for a gig at Sheffield Arena, an easy 40 Min drive away. York, Sheffield, Nottingham and Lincoln are all within easy reach from this location. Our room (a feature room) was clean, well designed and with all mod cons. The feature room gives you a bigger (four poster) bed and slightly more space as well as a generous bathroom. We had a nice view of the gardens which is well worth mentioning as a feature of staying at the West Retford, ideal for a pleasant walk or having a drink outside. The breakfast is good value and worth paying for in advance with the room. We were offered a full continental breakfast with a selection of juices, tea, coffee and toast. A member of staff then came to our table to take our order for a cooked breakfast which is totally customisable according to personal preference. The staff were pleasant and helpful when asked and there is ample car parking (free) in the hotel grounds. Retford itself is a fine example of a traditional market town. The market operates Thurs-Saturday and there are many attractions locally especially National Trust properties namely Clumber and Rufford Parks and, of course, Sherwood Forest. The train station is a 5 min drive away or a 20 Min walk and as Retford is on the east coast mainline you can be in London in 90 mins. There is a BP petrol station a little further along the road from the hotel and a Morrison's supermarket close nearby. The town has a selection of car parks but the hotel is within easy walking distance, 10 mins and you will be in the market square. Retford is also fortunate to have a rather large public park, King's Park, which has a great play park for kids and families.

Check in/Reception Swift, clear and with a smile. Room Typical Best Western, comfortable, clean and perfect for a night's stay. We were there for dinner bed and breakfast. The deal included £20 per person toward your evening meal. Hotel & Grounds The hotel is a large and impressive building. Elegant rather than quaint. Very well tended and provided a nice pre-dinner walk. Dining The dining room (Orangery) was bright and fresh but you perhaps wouldn't choose it for a romantic meal as it has more of a diner feel to it (in our opinion). The food however was superb and we both declared it excellent and exceeded our expectations. Staff Lovely.

This is a great hotel, with a nice bar and fabulous set of restaurants, despite it being a busy hotel, the quality is consistent from arm chair to dining table, very nice. The gardens are quite spectacular, and are accessible from the bar, lovely on a summers evening.

We had a lovely stay at this hotel for our anniversary. The staff were friendly and extremely helpful. The evening meal was fantastic and the chef wrote a beautiful 'happy anniversary' message on our desserts. The grounds are beautiful and ideal for a wedding. We were very lucky to go on a quiet night so it felt like we had really special attention. The room had everything we needed with a nice garden view and comfy bed. We would definitely recommend this hotel.

Stayed here on a recent business trip. Rooms spacious and clean. Food good in restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Staff helpful. Good location for Retford and surrounding area. Quiet. Ample parking. Recommended.

I haven't been to the west Retford for a very long time but attended for a friends wedding , staff were friendly and attentive , the food was beautifully cooked and waiter staff very polite. The place is beautiful and the grounds and gardens are immaculate . One of my friends stayed in one of the hotel rooms which was clean , spacious and she said very comfy . Had a wonderful day so Thankyou very much .

I stayed here over the Easter weekend for a friends wedding that was happening off site. Positives: The grounds and the hotel are lovely. If you were to have a wedding here the pictures would be great. Check in staff were brilliant. Really friendly and let us check in an hour before hand as there was nobody in the room from the night before. Room was massive, really comfy double bed and nice sofa. Really spacious in room 62 in the outhouse part of the building. Breakfast was really nice - self service all you can eat, it was a little sparse when we made it down however this was just before ten and there were two wedding party's there so I don't think you can expect anything more. Negatives: No hot water. We tried to shower on the morning to find there was no hot water, our friend had tried the day before and the same day but alas no hot water. I don't think that this is acceptable when you pay the rates you do. When I checked out the woman was on the phone so I couldn't speak to her about this. We tried showering after breakfast but no luck. Evening waiting staff: the day before the wedding several people met for tea, the wait was long which can kinda be justified. However what can't is the attitude of the staff. Two people joined and put two seats at the end of the tables. When the food came out they moved and put the chairs to the side, however one member of staff kicked a chair which wasn't in her way and it left a really bad taste. The restaurant was empty apart from us. Calm down!

My wife, me and our 3 year old stay here when visiting my father in law in Retford. The double rooms with extra bed are generously sized en suite. All very clean. The food is very good both evening and breakfast.

we booked a feature room before xmas , it was really lovely , everything you would expect for the price , we ate at in the hotel and the food was really good too , the grounds are very well kept , the thing that let it down was where our room was situated , unfortunatly there was a wedding on in one of the function rooms 20 metres from our room so on the second night we got no sleep and could sing along to all the cheesy disco songs until way after 12pm ... and then the d.j who was parked under our window had to pack away sooo it was a very bumpy night , may be this room could have some thing down with the windows to stop too much noise ? so a tip is to make sure that you will get a quiet night , I gave this a 4 because the staff where understanding and they did sort the issue out , and everything else about the hotel was good ,

We stayed here just for one night in the middle of winter. Having stayed in other Best Western Hotels we were a little surprised at our accommodation which was in an annexe. Our room, although very warm and comfortable, was dark due to having very small windows and was also on the small size. It was reached by some very steep stairs which some people would have found a bit difficult or intimidating. However the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly and we very much enjoyed the grounds of this hotel which, although somewhat in the middle of the town, were a place of quiet and serenity. They were filled with many statues and other ornaments and we were lucky to see the snowdrops in full bloom. We enjoyed a sumptuous afternoon tea and a superb breakfast.

We had dinner in the Orangery restaurant, mid-week. The menus we were handed we a bit confusing, in that there were three, including one which was just specials. We were easily able to find something to suit. The wine carte was divided up in a novel way and the descriptions were helpful. Scallops on a potato purée base and with a warm pea and bean salad were truly excellent. The scallops were beautifully cooked. The scallop shell was not necessary. Rabbit terrine looked a little bland on the plate, but was tasty and the orange flavoured chutney was delicious. Steak was requested medium rare, and it was. Double cooked pork belly was tender and delicious. The presentation of these dishes was first class, especially the pork belly. Sticky toffee pudding was really good, served with a jug of custard. The ice cream sundae was delicious, with fresh strawberries an a strawberry coulis. The only disappointment was coffee, which might have been a little warmer. Service was friendly and efficient. We would definitely return. The meal was definitely above average. Three courses, two persons, with wine a little over one hundred pounds. We stayed overnight. The standard double room was comfortable and well appointed, the furniture in good condition and the place clean. We haven't tried breakfast yet, but based on dinner, we believe it will be just fine.

Well what a surprise this hotel is set in the middle of retford and the grounds are superb but it is the staff that make this place a pleasure to stay at the evening staff especially and the receptionist are very friendly and can't do enough to make your stay a pleasure I only knew a few names of the staff but Alice Jess and Beth where really friendly and helpful a credit to the hotel hope to go back one day 10/10 thanks again

We stayed at this hotel whilst visiting friends in Retford. This was our second visit! The rooms are spacious and clean! All staff were helpful and friendly! The "Full English" breakfast is certainly worth having! Will be returning!

Great venue for weddings - I was there as part of a group just for a meal - it wasn't the best - peoples food didn't turn up and some of those whose did turn up was cold - mine however was on time and excellent!

While we only used the room for getting ready for a night out and staying the one night ; the room was very good. The room itself was not in the main building but a separate area. The room was clean, tidy and warm. A bath and shower was a great asset to getting ready. Obtained for a good price, it exceed expectation. Recommended.

I booked a cottage room for a one night stay as a special treat for us rather than an ordinary room. The room was a decent size and was very clean, bed was a good size and very comfortable and we had an excellent night's sleep. But we were disappointed, the antique roll top bath is not, it's a modern version and certainly two people cannot bath together nor is there anywhere to place a wine glass or champagne flute. The bathroom is pleasant but the walk in shower is small and the overhead shower didn't work very well, the shower head needed cleaning and the separate hand shower was a joke, just a trickle of water. Toiletries were measly, not very big or generous, bathrobes would have been nice. Room service was poor with not much choice. It's attention to detail that was missing, the little touches you expect when paying the price we did, and overall not good value for money.

Its the little things that were missing that made this stay average. No shelf in the bathroom to put your toothbrush on, instead the toiletries ( what little of them there were) were placed on the back of the toilet cistern... even the glasses! Toiletries were a bar of soap, 1 shower gel and shampoo... no conditioner and hardly enough for 2 to share. Tea and coffee provisions were equally sparse, with only 1 biscuit and 1 hot chocolate when the room was booked for 2 people. Its the little touches like this when done well, really add to my enjoyment of the stay. The double bed was very small, and the room was chilly. The location is lovely and the room we were in was quaint... but not worth the price tag.

We found the hotel comfortable and satisfactory to our needs. The restaurant (once heating turned on) was well appointed and modern with good menu selection. The restaurant manager gets full marks. We came down for breakfast too late on the Sunday (having mis-read the times). Despite being 15 mins late and him having a coach party of elderly visitors arriving for breakfast the manager agreed to serve us in our own bit of the dining rooms.

We booked for Sunday lunch on 13th Nov to try out this place as we have never visited before but have book for the gala dinner and overnight stay on New Years Eve. There were 3 of us and although the food was ok the service was dreadful. When we were served the main course the waitress left a small bowl of vegetables and we weren't clear whether these were to share or we were to get one each. It turns out it was the former and we had to share 2 small florets of cauliflower between the 3 of us! The waitresses then returned to the kitchen, no offer of any condiments or check to see if we were ok. One eventually came out, I asked if we could have some more veg and my mum wanted a glass of water. The veg arrived as we were finishing our meal, alas the glass of water didn't. Then we ordered 2 desserts. My husband got his but my mum was left wanting. When he had finished his we were fed up so decided to pay. I explained to the duty manager that one of the desserts had yet to turn up and how disappointed I was with the service and I was worried as we had booked for new year. She replied by saying that the staff were young, inexperienced and didn't know what they were doing!! She did remove the cost of my husbands dessert for our inconvenience then lo and behold my mums dessert finally arrived just as she was putting her coat on. Very disappointing and hope it's much improved at new year especially as this is costing £300

Lovely venue. Lovely on all levels. Lovely food, service and nothing was to much trouble. Rooms for my sisters wedding were stunning. Intimate. Got a better price via web than through the hotel. Only down side...only enough toiletries and towels for one...even though the booking was for two. Easily sorted though. V lovely venue.

I had my wedding last Wednesday at the West Retford Hotel. From the day we went to view the hotel till the time we checked out after our wedding we had the most amazing experience there. The staff were fault less, the wedding went like clock work. They made all our guests and people involved with our wedding feel so welcome and nothing was to much trouble. Throughout the day someone was always on hand but in the back ground and they made sure we had whatever we needed at the right time. I would recommend this hotel to anyone I cant imagine a better day than what we had. Perfect day in the most perfect place.

West Retford Hotel is a beautiful place staff of very friendly the prices are quite reasonable we had a lovely meal there and would like to thank the staff for a great time I would give this 10 out of 10 and would love to stay here again.

Excellent venue, food and wonderful friendly attentive service by all who helped the celebration be happy and memorable for all the right reasons. Accommodation, breakfast and other facilities also excellent.

We spent the night here on 22nd October. booking was good, the hotel understood my need for a quiet room and we were given room 56, an executive room at the very end of the building. Overall hygiene was good. No fridge but good selection of teas, coffee, etch and complimentary bottled water. Staff nice and friendly and happy to provide fresh milk for tea. Mattress was ok. A bit lumpy. Sheets nice, pillows ok but a bit lumpy. The main problem we had was that the heating is on a timer and I woke up in the middle of the night freezing cold. We were at the end of the corridor and so had two outside walls, but I expected not to be cold and to have no way of adjusting to temperature of the room. At £119 a night, including a reasonable breakfast, I don't expect to be cold. Overall quite a nice hotel and they do very reasonably priced wedding packages for anyone looking for a venue!

First the good, the bar was reasonably priced and the staff were very nice. And the not so good...The hotel was freezing! The bar area was sealed and OK but you needed to put your coat on to go to the loo. When I moved the bath mat there was dirt under it and the last guest's empty shampoo packet had been left. In a cheep and cheerful place I could forgive these things but if you are changing £100 plus, per night, you should do better.

Spent the weekend there recently for my friends wedding, the venue was perfect beautiful hotel and gardens were lovely, the staff were lovely too very helpful and friendly. Our rooms were beautiful big comfy beds and all we needed. The wedding was perfect outside in the garden in the autumn sun. What a great place to stay when that way or even for a cheeky weekend away with loved ones

We had our wedding reception at the West Retford hotel and my wife and I were very happy with the service provided and how smoothly everything went on the day, so firstly I'd like to thank everyone at the hotel for helping to make the day special. The venue itself is perfect for a wedding, from the grand entrance and the beautiful facade, and then the absolutely gorgeous gardens at the rear which are perfect for photos and gatherings. The main downstairs hall is great for holding the reception and is ideal for 60-100 guests. The rooms are actually in a separate building which is ideal when guests want to retire from the party, as the separate building is quiet. The rooms are also well furnished, clean and the beds comfortable. For the meal we had the Soup to start, Venison & Mash for main, with cheesecake for dessert. The food was very nice, particularly the cheesecake which was fantastic. Finally I want to praise all the staff who were involved. Everybody was very friendly, respectful & accommodating. It was well organised and there were no problems on the day, everything went smoothly. Even the night porter was more than happy to allow us to continue chatting and drinking in the lounge area after the music & main bars had closed, serving us drinks. All round fantastic place and I have no doubt that we will return for the odd visit, for old times sake.

Can't control the temperature so i sat here trying to work in the cold. They finally brought a space heater. The room is sold as an exectuvie room but has the worlds smallest desk the depth is the same as my laptop. The view over the parking lot leaves much to be desired and they only accept cash or card for room service. I would not recommend this hotel for business users at all. Front desk seemd a bit put off that i was bothering them about the heat and did not apologize for it. come on guys it's october in Britain!

It is a couple of years since I last stayed at the West Retford Hotel. I found the experience as pleasant as on previous occasions. My room was large, well furnished, in very good order, and spotlessly clean. It was also free from traffic noise. The shower is easy to operate, and the hotel provides a non-slip mat for use in the bath. The staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful. The hotel setting is pleasant and stylish. I was there for just one night, looking for a good night's sleep in comfortable, relaxing, congenial surroundings. This hotel provides them.
