« Nice area, Average Rooms, Average Place »

I've visited this hotel twice now due to work, both times i've really not been impressed. The hotel as a whole is getting aged, the rooms are all very basic and not very welcoming or comfortable. By all means they seem clean and the staff are nice, but i believe there are a lot of things missing. Just comes across as a dull place. I do enjoy the food, for a good brekkie in the morning and a nice dinner in the evening it is a good standard and not bad price for hotel food. The really annoying part for me is their gym, if you can call it that. I like to keep fit and even in comparison to hotel gyms, this really is a joke. I decided to not use it after trying my hardest to work with the equipment, did a run instead, which i do recommend as the area itself is lovely. Winnersh is a short walk/run up the road and has a nice park etc. Close to reading too and there's a free car park with the hotel, although some potholes need sorting. I will note, it looks like they are being bought out by Doubletree by HIlton, so there might be hope for the future if they decide to renovate this place.

« Just dreadful! NOT a Four Star hotel at all. »

The 4 * rating must be VERY out of date, this is nowhere near a 4* hotel. Possibly the most uncomfortable bed I've ever (tried) to sleep in! One small bath towel, one hand towel for two people. The shower curtain didn't work so water flooded all over the floor & sat there. The tissue box in the bathroom was empty. The dirty cups & glasses were left in the room & not swapped out for clean ones, coffee etc not replenished. Two different meals ordered via room service - neither order was correct. One meal arrived with the contents spilt all over the tray (although we were credited for this meal). The telephone didn't work. The TV didn't work well & had a very limited number of stations to watch & there is a weird set-up with the internet which involved getting numerous pieces of paper from reception to find a code which worked. The breakfast had been left out so long the baked beans had a skin on them & bacon was like hard, old leather. The scrambled eggs were from powdered egg, tasteless, insipid looking & cold (if they weren't powdered eggs, it was the best impression of powdered eggs I've seen). The whole place needs a good clean & then a major update & overhaul which is a shame, as it could be a delightful hotel as its setting, with the river & old mill could be lovely, although the road is very busy right outside the front. The blonde lady working reception was very sweet, helpful & professional, as was the young gentleman who was working reception on Saturday as well and both did their best to help, however they couldn't save this hotel from being more Fawlty Towers than Fawlty Towers itself! A very disappointing stay - they would do better without the 4 stars as expectations wouldn't be so high.

    « Lovely stay »

A quaint hotel in a quiet area, lovely staff and quiet hotel room. We couldn't have asked for more. There is a patio behind the hotel where you can sit and have your food and drink if the weather allows it, and a small creek is behind the hotel. Staff was friendly and helpful and there's even a fully equipped gym in the hotel. We will definitely book again.

« Nice Hotel In Need Of An Update. »

Stayed here as a family for a night when visiting in Reading. Ample parking, although flooded when I arrived. Large open reception lacking warmth. Check in was quick and easy. Room was located fairly near to the main part of the hotel. The rooms are a good size and very clean. Although they are quite outdated in their appearance. The A/C did not work, but thankfully the windows actually open to the point that air can come in. The beds were ok in comfort, very happy our daughter had a bed to sleep in rather than a sofa bed. Over all a good sleep was had all round. Breakfast the next day was the star of the stay. Excellent freshly cooked breakfast. You select what you would like if having a cooked breakfast. Superbly done. Also fresh continental breakfast if you prefer. Our stay was comfortable and the price we paid was reasonable. Although the price is usually a lot higher for a nights stay. The hotel is in need of a major update to appeal to what vacationers are expecting for their £'s these days.

    « Coach Mystery Tour »

Ended up @ the Best Western Reading Moat House via a coach Mystery Tour.Check in was polite and quick to say they had to deal with a coach load.Car park can flood. My room was on the first floor 109.It was quite spacious with ironing board, trouser press, safe, tea making facilities and TV.Plenty of room in the bathroom and shelf space.Towels are fluffy. The bed was clean and comfortable.Over all a very clean room. The evening meal let the hotel down, not much choice.Meat balls, over done pasta, crunchy veg, salad, cold meat, cheese cake, lemon merangue pie,no soup.fruit.Breakfast was better, although went cold quickly. It is buffet style.Over all, I had a good over night stay, but would not book for longer.

    « Entirely Average »

Just stayed at this hotel for a little birthday escape. On arrival the place looks tired.. pleasant but needs work to make it a bit more presentable. I wouldn't consider this a four star hotel.. 3.5 tops in my view. The decor is old fashioned, the tables in the bar are wobbly, the bar has little (no) character. It's a nice location but they haven't made the most of that location.. more outdoor seating is required at the bar. I expect as the restaurant is being refurbished it's put a bit of pressure on the bar as the service was slow with food at the bar.. coach party didn't help either to be honest. The room was basic, the ?kingsize bed? was two beds pushed together although comfortable not what I'd expect from a hotel of a supposed 4 stars. Dinner was nice but we waited quite a long time (around half an hour) between courses... again down to the coach party I presume. Breakfast was entirely self service although tasty but we had to ask for the brown bread and cutlery as the tables weren't set on arrival, there was lipstick on my glass so I didn't drink my apple juice. Overall impressions are there is little point refurbishing the restaurant if the rest of the hotel is stuck in a time warp. It's not the worst experience that I've ever had, the prices are fair and the staff seemed pleasant although not exactly beaming with smiles!

    « Rescued weary travellers »

Thank you Best Western. We arrived at a B&B that we had booked and we found that it did not provide breakfast. We called in at the Best Western that evening had a drink, and they said we could have breakfast at the hotel the next morning. They were so helpful, it was £14.95 but we learned that you get what you pay for! Thank you.

« Nice hotel just needs tweaking »

We stayed at this hotel for one night as we were travelling to Southampton, and paid just a little over what you would pay for a budget hotel. On arrival, the area looked lovely, and the hotel had plenty of parking spaces, however, it had, as usual been raining and the car park flooded leaving our shoes dirty with gravel. Some vehicles the next morning were completely surrounded by water including ours which was a pain as we where going on a cruise. There is parking at the top of the hotel near to the entrance, but for a small amount of vehicles. When we checked in, we were informed that there was a wedding so the pub was closed to guests, and the restaurant was fully booked. This was disappointing after travelling many hours, and perplexed why we were not informed beforehand. With all the easy and hassle free ways we can message people - it would have been nice to receive a text message or email at the least to inform us. The upside, we found what maybe a French run pub about 8 minutes from the hotel, and we had a really lovely night with wonderful food. I think we received a free upgraded on our room which was fabulous, and very grateful for. Our room was an executive room and it was lovely and big with a nice bathroom. You know, the hotel is lovely inside, and yes, we would have liked to have dined in the restaurant but these things happen. I just feel the little things go a long way in this critical nit picking age we live in... But overall we did find it a pleasant stay, and we would return again for a pre-cruise stay.

    « Comfortable stay »

Stayed for a night on business. The room was what you would expect from this type of hotel and was very clean with a comfortable bed. During my stay there was something wrong with the pipes in the bedroom (making loud noise) and after contacting reception they were quick to move me to a king room so can't complain at the service. I found the staff to be very pleasant. Breakfast was self service hot and cold buffet with a good selection.

    « Exceeds expectations »

The hotel is full of character, spacious and lovely. Stayed here to visit a dear friend and to explore the area. Our room was spacious and love the big bathroom! Thank you all so much for making our stay a memorable one. Everyone was just warm and welcoming. Food was great. Excellent customer service all around. The GM Mr A Bali even came and said hello at breakfast. Keep up the great job guys!

    « Lack of communication »

I booked this hotel for 2 nights online When I arrived there was complete chaos about my booking I had booked and paid for my accommodation on Feb 15th I was told my payment had been declined on Feb 16 th and I was asked to pay again of which I refused . I showed the invoice for the payment The address they had for me was a Spanish one the card they had been trying to collect on wasn't even mine The manager sorted this out . When I went to my room it was a twin not double as I had requested I was move to another room which was very noisy as it was near the lift the a/c was extremely noisy When I went for supper I was told I couldn't put this on my bill as the hadn't got a copy of the card . On checkout the only thing that related to me was my name the address was in Gran canaries Although the staff were pleasant the booking system needs to be looked into

    « Very friendly staff »

Stayed here for a buisness trip. The room was clean and everything that you would expect from a hotel such as this. The staff were extremely friendly which made this a really pleasant stay. The breakfast was a serve yourself full English which was great, couldn't fault it. The only reason for not giving a 5 star was the evening meals. A good menu, but just a bit lacking in conviction. Steaks overdone, in fact all of the meats I has were overcooked. We were with a big party so I suspect we just overwhelmed the kitchen. Nice building with a cosey little pub attached to it. Would recommend....good job as I have to go back in July

    « Comfortable stay »

The hotel was in a good location to travel to a course on the outskirts of Reading (one of the business parks up near the Thames). Parking was free and although a sign said a token was required from Reception in order to exit, all you need is a code which is displayed on the desk. My room was quiet although I had problems controlling the temperature and it was very warm. I was unable to turn the radiator off and I left a note for Room Service to ask if they could address it. They removed the note but the temperature remained the same so I had to have the window open. Thankfully it's winter so I got a nice cool breeze! There was a control panel on the wall which looked as though it controlled some kind of air conditioning but it had a flashing spanner symbol on the display and I couldn't get it to switch on. There were a lot of food options for vegetarians - even available for room service. The food was very well presented and tasted good. Breakfast was also good quality and there was plenty to choose from. It started from 07:00 each morning. The shower pressure was amazing - one of the best showers I've ever experienced! Overall it was a nice stay and the hotel had everything I needed. I would definitely stay here again.

    « A handy place for a night's stay »

We stayed here for a night in order to avoid a rush-hour drive in the morning. The hotel is adequate - nothing special really. The Car Park gives you a very poor welcome - it is just gravelled and not hard-standing, and on the night we arrived a large section was out-of-use due to flooding. Mud & gravel are not the best surfaces to try and haul a wheeled suitcase over... The staff on reception were friendly and check-in was efficient. I chose the prebooked breakfast rather than pay-on-the-day, since it saves nearly £5! Our room was OK, average decor and a very comfy bed, but the ancient two-pipe heating system was not really up to the job and the room was cold for most of the time we were in it. The bathroom was not heated at all - even Premier Inns have heated towel rails - and the lack of heat left me very unimpressed. It also caused the mirror to 'steam up' at the slightest suggestion of hot water in the bath or sink. Breakfast was very good and the hot buffet was constantly being replenished during the breakfast service. This hotel is very popular for those staying away on business and is really geared towards that market.

« Quality Hotel Friendly staff April 17 to February 18 »

I have stopped at this hotel for the last six months and found all the staff very friendly and helpful. Choice of bar food in the hotel bar and the adjoining pub or you can eat in the restaurant, I found all food good but could do with changing the restaurant menu more often. Hollie and Gemma on reception, Ciro in the bar/restaurant, Simon one of the managers and Bruna who seems to do most jobs stand out from the crowd. Thanks to all for making me feel at home

We had my daughters and son in laws wedding reception at this hotel, the staff went out of their way to make sure everyone had an amazing day, food was lovely bar staff where fab, rooms where clean and comfortable. Would highly recommend this hotel for any occasion. Thankyou all for making it a very memorable day.

« Hotel near M4 by old watermill »

We stayed in 4 rooms to go to a wedding party. I used to live near here and had remembered how the car park was always flooded in winter. It was still pretty squelchy now. Disappointing. Nice comfy foyer and good freshly cooked breakfast overlooking the mill stream. Room had big comfy bed and well lit bathroom. However we all thought the room lighting was too dim. 2 rooms had standard lamps with dead bulbs in. Poachers pub at back. A bit impersonal but handy.

« Food good cold atmosphere »

We had Sunday lunch for my 70th birthday on the 7th January, we had all had previous experiences of this hotel both staying and eating. However on this occasion unfortunately we were the only party of 10 which was not the issue, it was so cold in the hotel rooms both lounge area and dining. The food was very good but by the end of the meal I was actually shivering and so was my 90 year old Mother. This is the reason for the average review, as staff did there utmost to assist by putting a very small heater at the rea of our table.

    « Okay Overnight Stop »

Stayed here prior to meeting up for a car rally. First impressions of entrance and reception good but the room disappointed. Mix of old and new which does not gel and the bed was so uncomfortable neither of us slept.Breakfast was good although in a hotel of this calibre I would expect to be served with tea and coffee, not have to queue mug in hand at the one and only machine. As others reviews have commented the staff do not seem happy. We were lucky to park on a bit of higher ground - something needs to be done about the carpark as it was a lake!

    « Great Hotel »

I've been to the Moat House a few times over the last 20 years or so and it has always been a good quality hotel. Location is great, it looks great and the price is good, too. I will always choose this hotel to stay in if I need to be in the Reading/Wokingham area.

    3
    « OK »

This hotel was mostly OK. The one problem I had was that the shower in my room didn't work. Thankfully there was a bath as well, so I was able to have a bath. That was the only problem I had, and everything else was OK, but to be honest that's pretty basic stuff. Other than that, my room was clean and comfortable. Staff were helpful. Breakfast was good.

    4
    « Christmas stay »

Stayed here over Christmas while visiting family in the area. Overall, hotel seemed to be functioning as normal but the wifi wasn't working which was the main negative. Entertainment provided on Christmas and Boxing day in the main bar also.

    « Christmas stay »

Arrived on Christmas Eve, expecting to be able to get evening meal in the restaurant but was informed on check-in that the restaurant would not be open. Not impressed with that. Otherwise the room was comfortable enough and the breakfasts were absolutely fine.

« The worst service i ever been to for a Christmas visit »

I checked in on Christmas eve and everything was alright that day. The next day was Christmas day and that when we found problems i called room-service at 11am to order a omelette and chips and that took over 1hour and a half then and i payed cash at that time. i tried to call reception no one wants to pick up i called about 5 times to make a complaint so i gave up at that time and told them in the morning but no one looked bothered so said can i speak to the manager and she said she was busy, I check out on boxing day and then the receptionist told me you haven't payed for your room-service and accusing me that i wrote on the receipt and asking me to give my card so they can charge me again and i said i'm not going to pay again and the receptionist was keeping changing her story so it was unprofessional employee working in reception and at the end they called the employee who worked the day before to confirm. So in future could you update your systems and training stuff properly.

Professional friendly staff, excellent breakfast, clean comfortable rooms, good for both business and pleasure. peaceful location, good parking facilities with no height restrictions. The gateway to Reading and the south west. enjoy

    « Christmas Visit »

We used this hotel as a weekend stay in order to visit family and friends to do the Christmas Prezzie Run. Lovely hotel, super friendly staff and lovely and clean. One drawback only... We could not get an evening meal in the hotel unless we had room service. This was due to the fact that they were holding private Christmas parties on both evenings. Not really good enough!!! They could have left some room for guests somewhere in the restaurant!!

    5
    « Christmas Party »

We went here on Saturday to go to one of their Christmas Parties. we were with group of friends (this is something we do every year at different venues) So far this has been the best. Extremely busy, loads of people, but the food was good, really good for the amount of people they were serving. The Entertainment was fun and the Staff were lovely. The hotel itself if very spacious and is in a very nice setting with a river around it. Sadly this does give them a problem as the car park is very muddy The room was fine, nice and clean and perfect for a short stay, did have an iron, ironing board, hair dryer and a safe. Breakfast was good. For me one of the most important things is the staff and the staff were really nice.

« reading moat house, sindlesham »

Each time I visit, I am assured of good service, friendly efficient staff, a clean, warm and comfortable room, plenty of hot water for showers and a clean, cosy, comfortable bed - and the breakfasts are consistently superb. I simply love it there. Beautiful grounds with the mill stream flowing through - and well away from any busy roads. There is also a pub attached for the occasional light meal - again cosy and friendly. It really is a bliddful, relaxing experience.

    3
« Great Staff but average facility »

Staff was very helpful and make the experience. Facility is average. Room was next to the lift was very noisy. Bed was not comfortable. This is a hotel that is out in the country a but so there is nothing that is walkable so if you do not have a vehicle makes it a bit more difficult. Cabs or rides do come quickly and staff is helpful in assisting to arrange a pick uo

    4
    « Pleasant location »

The hotel itself looks very impressive and is in a lovely setting. Pity that the large car park was muddy and rutted. The walk from the car park to reception over the bridge is nice but parts are poorly lit. The reception area is welcoming, spacious and clean. The receptionist was very helpful and pleasant. There was an event taking place in the hotel and restaurant area that evening, so we had been given a room on the top floor so that we shouldn't be disturbed - very thoughtful. Our standard room was clean and unexceptional, but the bed was comfortable. The bathroom was clean and nicely tiled, but the fittings were a bit tired - very nice toiletries, though! Another problem was that the air conditioning, or in this case the heating, could not be adjusted, whether this was a fault in our room or overall, but I like a cooler room to sleep in and the fan was very noisy all night. We had requested breakfast, for which we had to pay £14.95 per person, so I was curious to see what culinary delights would be on offer. Having stayed in Best Western hotel in Bath, where we ordered our breakfast from a separate menu, I wondered if that would be the case here. But, no, just the bog standard buffet breakfast with coffee machines. The choice was not huge especially in the bread and pastries area or the cold continental type buffet. Very disappointing and certainly not worth the money. £15 per room might just have covered it, especially if you didn't want to sample all on offer but just wanted full English and coffee! The restaurant setting itself was lovely, being in the old part of the building. I liked the quiet location, and will probably stay again, but wouldn't bother with breakfast!

    « Great weekend break »

Brilliant break from start to finish. Lovely comfortable room, spotlessly clean. Very friendly and helpful staff, great room service, fantastic breakfast. We will stay again soon. Love the grounds and location.

    « Very good value »

The hotel is a little dated but don't let that put you off because it more than makes up for itself in other ways. Comfortable beds, free WiFi, quiet location, decent breakfast selection and nice staff. Only minor complaint is that the car park needs attention - either tarmac it or gravel because it is very very muddy and pot-holed, not great for wheeling suitcases through. Great value for money overall.

    5
    « Another great weekend »

Another great weekend spent at this great hotel. Staff wonderful, room just what you need, dog friendly, bed and bowl for our Ash, restaurant and food excellent, breakfast buffet wonderful. Don't know what else to say. Easy to get to from the M4 say 5 mins. Autumn winter 3 night break £150.

    « A lovely hotel. »

We stayed for 1 night, the room was clean, comfy and spacious. The buffet breakfast was very nice. I would definitely recommend this hotel. Ample parking and friendly staff are always a bonus. The location was very handy.

    « A night away »

We decided on a last minute night away and literally chose a hotel randomly! Reading doesn't sound like a romantic destination but we were pleasantly surprised! The staff at this hotel were awesome, hospitality is obviously high on their agenda. (Special mention to hollie who went above and beyond!) The room. Quaint and cosy, the only fault was it was so hot, the air con wouldn't work, and being on the top floor had a very small window which meant a very warm night sleep! Furniture good, bed comfortable and the bathroom clean. The building. We loved it! Modern mixed with old. Comfortable and welcoming. Breakfast was great, couldn't fault it. It's worth popping to reading for a shopping expedition. My only issues were the heat in the room, and some what looked like tea splatters on the wall and desk that had been missed when cleaning. If we are ever passing we would definitely come back.

    « Business Trip »

Well an interesting place to stay, on arrival at half past mid-night greeted by a very pleasent member of reception staff. The room 113 was on the ground floor on entering the room it was very cold. The room was clean but it was hunt the kettle which was hidden in the wardrobe bit I did find the ironing board as well a bonus. The bathroom was another story the sink was cracked to the point that white silicon sealant had been used to keep it together. The sink should have been replaced a long time ago. The breakfast on the Saturday was the standard buffet and was very good. On Saturday I had to use the main car park, it reminded me of a war zone large pot holes filled with water which meant that the you had to zig-zag around the car park to avoid getting dirty. Monday the cooked breakfast was made to order probably due to the lack of guests .. it was a case of hunt a clean coffee cup.... The cooked breakfast was excellent and the coffee was very good. Overall the hotel is out on a limb but is in a serious need of a make over. Not somewhere I would use for a weekend but as my company was paying for the weekend then not an issue.

    « Great hotel for a chain »

Stayed here about 20 years ago, before it being a Best Western. Loved it and wanted to return. It's not independent any longer but still quite nice. The staff were extraordinarily accommodating. My wife and I are seniors and in need of a little extra help. Staff went out of their way to accommodate us.

« Reasonable two nights stay »

The car park can be a bit muddy when wet so to drag ones suitcases to the reception could be a problem. However, no matter where we stay we always drive our car to the front reception entrance, unload and then park. The hotel is a converted water mill and has been enlarged. The reception staff were pleasant and efficient. There was a lift to our first floor room which was labelled 'Executive'. It was a reasonable size with a good size writing desk. There was air conditioning which was not needed but I should imagine would be handy in the Summer. The bathroom was a good size and the shower over the bath worked effectively. The double bed was not comfortable as it had a few lumps, probably the mattress needed replacing. We ate each night in the restaurant as part of the package being allowed £25 each per night against the al la carte menu which had a reasonable choice. The food was good and the portions large. The only downside on the first evening was that we had to wait over 30 minutes for our main course, the explanation given by the waiter was that he had told the chef who had forgot the order. When we asked to sign the bill we were told that as our credit card and not been authorised by reception we would have to settle it there and then. When we explained that we on Secret Escapes the waiter apologised and put the bill on our room account. The same thing happened on the second evening, which was a little embarrassing. The fault was probably due to a lack of communication between reception and the waiting staff, but even so you would have thought that they would know how to bill Secret Escapes guests. Breakfast was as one would expect these days with self service hot and cold buffet and tea and coffee dispensed by a machine. In the end of the day it was a pleasant stay and made worthwhile by the Secret Escapes discount.

    « business trip »

to start off, car park was dreadful, full of pot holes, large puddles so got feet wet when got out of car. Had a tough job getting suitcase to reception, also stairs up to reception so not easy to struggle with case and bags etc. The room was ok, a bit dated and tired looking. Was a lift, but then had to take case up more stairs to get to room. Had a wasp in bathroom, managed to catch it and drown in a glass of water. Took housekeeping 2 days to remove it. Food was hit and miss, beer battered cod great, panini, horrid, not hot or cooked properly, and kettle crisps soft. Breakfast, never any cups by coffee machine, 2 days running no bacon for breakfast, so had to find a waiter to ask. waiting staff slow at clearing tables so when trying to find a table, had to remove dirty plates to make room, no cutlery. Reception staff OK, but not overly friendly. wouldn't want to go back really

    « Another great stay »

This is the 4th time we have stayed whilst visiting family. We have never been disappointed. The staff were all friendly without exception. This time the hotel was full and there was a wedding on the Saturday night. The first we knew of this was at breakfast when it was the busiest we had ever seen it. The staff were unfazed by the rush. They remained polite and helpful and were constantly refreshing all the breakfast items. No noise disturbance at all. The poachers pub is another plus for us. Nice to have the option to go without one of us having to drive or having to get a taxi back. There is also a bar in the hotel we didn't use this but it always looked welcoming and had staff on hand. The restaurant looked busy in the evening due to a coach party. We have never eaten in the hotel so cannot comment on the food but I expect if you used the restaurant before or after the coach party it would be fine. Would recommend and will use again in the future.

« good value but need more attention to detail on small matters »

We were staying for a family wedding nearby and so had lots of rooms between us and multiple reservations. The staff on reception were helpful but seemed disorganised and it took a while to find our 3 rooms on their system. We had an executive room but honestly apart from the historic beams which were nice ( and it was very quiet) our room did not seem as good as the standard rooms occupied by the others. We had a fridge and got biscuits, that seemed the only difference? The safe did not work. Maintenance came quickly but could not fix and said it would be fixed the next day ( we were staying 2 nights). However it was not fixed. The ordered newspaper didnt turn up but we werent charged for it on check out. On a positive note, we had reserved 2 tables of 11 for the restaurant one night and they handled that very well, and gave one group a separate area with a round table which was perfect. They also responded quickly and effectively when one elderly guest was taken ill. Some of our party complained about noise at night- there were events going on in the hotel but they didnt disturb us at all. Breakfast was good, plenty of tables and a good choice.

    « Helped us out »

We were supposed to be staying in another hotel, 21 August but had major problems, so had to find another hotel, gone 9pm. We found this hotel and at the desk, a young man named Thomas was very helpful and found us a room, for the night we also had a lovely meal and a couple of drinks. The hotel is lovely, but I agree with some of the reviews, that they need to change the mattresses. Breakfast was first class, with so much hot and cold food to choose from,we had booked to go to the Nivana spa, so just down the road, as we were celebrating our Pearl wedding anniversary had a great time there, and had a lovely Evening meal at the pub ajoined to the hotel at 10to 10 pm and they still cooked for us.All the staff were polite and helpful so after a bad start they saved the day, and stayed for 3days. Would recommend this hotel to any one, the only problem we had was the fire alarms went off at 3am on the first night, do has to evacuate the hotel, turns out some idiot at tried to remove their smoke alarm, so they could smoke, but we had to laugh as we had got married on August 22nd at 3 pm not 3am!! This was not the hotels fault. Hope this helps other people to choose this hotel, we are hoping to go there again soon.

    « Noisy »

A good value hotel with helpful and cheerful staff. Room we were given, on an early check in, was very small and only just fitted in the cot we'd prefer ordered. But it was clean and had a reasonably sized on suite. However the noise of the heating(?) System coming on at about 5am not only woke both of us up but the baby too in our room but my mother had the same issue in hers in another corridor.

    « Beautiful »

Beautiful spacious rooms with a large bathroom. Lovely setting with the moat around it. Breakfast was amazing help yourself continental & cooked. We enjoyed using the little pub attached around the corner for dinner. Easy access to the train station to go to London. Friendly helpful staff and superb value for money.

« basic and extremely outdated. »

Currently on my 3rd night of 4 on business. The hotel seems as if you are walking back in time when walking into the lobby, this also carries on to the bedrooms, the decor and furniture is seriously due a revamp. When checked into my room i found the main light did not work, and 2 of the 3 lights in the bathroom did also not work, when the gentleman came to fix these issues he did not hesitate to walk straight into my room without knocking first which i find very unacceptable. On the first night i ordered room service, i asked the man on the phone if the tray charge could be added onto my room to pay on check out which he said was fine to do, however when i came back to my room the day after i had a letter under the door demanding the outstanding balances were paid (£3). I spoke to the woman on reception who also confirmed that it was fine to pay on check out, however coming back to my room today i had another letter demanding payment?!. I would not mind going down to reception and paying these charges if i hadnt been told by 2 members of staff it was ok to pay in total on check out, also if the facilities and room was worth the money. For the rate in which this hotel costs i can confirm there are many more nicer/up to date places to stay around here.

    « Nice, quiet hotel »

Stayed here for 3 nights and commuted into London 3 days running. The hotel itself is nice, our room was nice, wouldn't have classed it as dated as such!! (Ive added a pic) The mattress weren't the best but we still slept ok. Staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast is good, loads to choose from! Taxi into Reading central is approx £12. The is also a bus stop 5 minutes walk across the roundabout... the bus will take approx 30-40 minutes to get to Reading station. I would return and recommend to others, we also paid a great price for booking way in advance at around £72 a night for a family room, for 4, with breakfast included!! Can't go wrong. If I recall it was a winter special.

    « Not a comfortable nights sleep!! »

Such a shame, it's a great spot-the grounds are beautiful and well maintained .The staff are friendly and welcoming and the breakfasts are good! However the rooms are dated and tired and the mattresses are awful!!! We stayed for two nights and we're extremely tired by the end of it! For our family a good bed and a decent shower is at the top of the list and unfortunately this hotel didn't deliver either!

« Lovely staff - hotel needs investment »

Good bolt hole with nice friendly helpful staff, but the rooms are really dated and a bit scruffy and the beds are awful - really uncomfortable old and shabby. The Best Western group need to invest in a refurb of the bedrooms.

« Surprised at how good it is »

As a seasoned traveller who has stayed in a number of 5 star hotels I was not really expecting a great deal from a stay in this hotel. We simply wanted to stay near the Nirvana spa. However, I was pleasantly surprised. It has a nice setting, the hotel is very clean, the service was excellent. We were allocated an executive room which was spacious and very comfortable. I did however notice a low humidity of noise and chair scraping and so phoned reception and asked for a quieter room that wasn't near the bar. We were immediately located another room and asked if we needed help decanting. The next morning I thought the hairdryer wasn't working, which turned out to be user error (you have to keep the button pressed in) but they immediately replaced it with a brand new out of the box hairdryer. All the staff members were extremely professional and helpful. The breakfast was plentiful and varied. The scrambled egg was amazing. A well run hotel which I would definitely return to

« Good but not great! »

I can't comment too much on the hotel as we booked one night accommodation after attending a family wedding near by. The hotel is set in beautiful surrounding and easy to find due to being close to main roads (even if my Dad had problems finding it! He blamed sat nav!). Our rooms were clean and large, I have to say mine and my husband's room was rather hot even though we opened the window's and turned off the heating. We couldn't get the aircon to work and whilst I appreciate I could have gone down to reception to ask or called them it was around 11pm and we just wanted to go to bed. Saying that we both sleep really well and the bed was really comfortable. The bathroom had amenities and the shower pressure was good (not great but woke you up!). The room also has a good hairdryer, not on that is plugged into the wall so you can choose where you plug in in the room. There is also a fairly large safe to store you belongings. The breakfast was lovely and fresh and the service attentive. I would recommend the hotel for a couple of nights stay and would happily go back.

« Room was not as booked »

We booked a room on the ground floor with accessible facilities on 26th May 2017 for August 20th 2017. When we booked in we were told all the accessible rooms were already occupied and we were given a 1st floor room with no special facilities. We asked for another room and we were told there were no rooms with walk in showers. After consulting someone else, half an hour later we were given a room with a walk in shower but on the third floor which had a very small window and was airless. It looked like it had not been used for a while. This is not what we expect from Best Western

« Our weekend stop-over....when visiting family in Wokingham.... »

My husband and I, stay 2 nights Bed and Breakfast at the Reading Moat House Hotel.....3 or 4 times a year. It is conveniently situated for visiting our Son, Daughter-in-Law and 3 of our Grandchildren who live nearby at Wokingham. The approach to the Hotel is via a long driveway. The open air car park is large but certain areas tend to flood in very heavy rainfall. The large frontage to the Hotel is extremely welcoming. The reception area is bright and cheerful and the reception staff are very helpful and polite. We always book a ground floor room looking out towards the Mill race. Although these rooms are rather small, they are very well equipped from T.V. to tea-tray. The beds are comfortable but for us, a 2 night stay, in a small room is long enough. We find the breakfasts are excellent and have always found the waiters and waitresses very obliging. The dining room is large and airy and once again looks out to the old Mill race. The lounge areas are comfortable and spacious. The Poachers Pub is attached to the Hotel and is a very lively, popular venue The food and drink menus are very appetising. All in all ......a very pleasant place to stay and we will continue our weekend stop-overs, hopefully for years to come.

« Not that impressed but did the job »

Stayed here the night as we were attending a wedding nearby. We got a small discount on the room because we were part of the wedding party FIRST IMPRESSIONS The reception and bar area are all marble-y and grand. The room however was very average and I've stayed in better Premier Inns. On the website, you can see quite nice rooms (with beams etc.) however I'm guessing that they're more expensive. They really need to redesign the standard rooms because the amount of money I saw at reception for 1 night in one of the rooms was £200! If I'd paid £200 to stay in that room, I'd be very annoyed. ROOM SERVICE We ordered a New Yorker pizza, fries and salad. It was £26 in total and actually ridiculously tasty. 24HR BAR When we got back from the wedding, we were in the 24 hour bar which was very nice to sit in and well designed. BREAKFAST Really bad service. No-one tells you what's going on. I was trying to speak to multiple waitresses who walked straight past me, ignoring me completely. There should be a sign to say something like "please take a seat" or something. The breakfast was ok but I've had better. The selection of continental breakfast food was really low. Also, nothing was being filled up quickly enough. They'd run out of hash browns and then when I went to get some orange juice, it was completely empty. SUMMARY It did the job but if I'd gone there for anything other than a wedding/convenient place to stay at a slightly reduced price, I would've been unhappy.

« Nice room but expensive »

We recently stayed here for a Spa evening at near by Nirvana Spa. Generally the hotel is tired and in need of an update. When I say this I am referring to the reception area, bar and restaurant. I decided to book an executive room due to hearing bad things about the other rooms. So please I did. The room was beautiful. Nice décor and very clean. Great use of space. Comfortable bed and a nice view out over the bridge over the stream. I unfortunately didn't get the best sleep though as you could hear people moving around above and the room being so hot I needed air con on full which was noisy. I think the room was so hot as fridge faulty and giving out a lot of heat from back. (this was highlighted at check out and receptionist said she would look in to things). Bad sleep aside room was very relaxing and laid out nicely with comfortable seating. We ordered room service in the evening which was fast and very yummy. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. I found all staff to be helpful and friendly. Overall me and my girlfriend enjoyed our stay but I wouldn't say the price we paid was reasonable.

    « A Nice Place To Stay »

This modern four star property offers everything a visitor could wish for. It is set in a vast car park in a waterside location. The common parts of the building have been immaculately maintained throughout. Staff of extremely efficient, courteous, and unfailingly helpful. There is a large and attractive bar which also serves hot and cold sandwiches and snacks, a pleasant restaurant, and an attractive and quite genuine English country pub adjoint the hotel itself. Rooms and bathrooms are of a good size, and very well equipped with TV, safe, and trouser press. There is complimentary wi-fi. We would happily revisit.

« Very nice quality room. Good price. »

Most comfortable stay at a great price. Nice bathroom, bed comfortable in this room with beams. Room furnishings modern and useful. Good tea making. Free water. Clean. Open. Welcoming. Large carpark. Lovely to walk around the area. Good pub next door, most pleasant meal. My tips to hotel to make this even better: Let us open our windows fully to really appreciate this lovely mill race. Improve the wine in your restaurant. We loved your decorations and high ceilings. A great hotel that could be even greater. We enjoyed it and would most certainly return.

    5
« Hotel built inside an old mill, plenty of character, wood beams and posts in the executive rooms. »

A delightful place to stay with a lot of character. We stayed in an executive room which was lovely with a large wooden beam in the ceiling. With the sloping and uneven floors just adding to the whole atmosphere of the place. The dinner we had the food served was of a very high quality and the price that we paid made it exceptional value for money. Breakfast was of an equal standard. The staff went out of the way to make my wife and i very welcome, we rated this hotel very highly indeed.

« OK but with problems »

On paper the hotel seems to offer a lot but we were rather disappointed. It started with the car park. Parking near the reception is not possible ( there are only half a dozen places near the entrance doors and they were permanently occupied during our two night visit). This means quite a long walk over a very, very dusty car park and pathway and by the time you arrive, shoes and wheeled cases are covered in grey dust. In wet weather is must be a extraordinary muddy. The reception entrance is up a substantial flight of steps and getting cases up and down these is a nightmare. The ladies in our party could not manage the cases up the stairs at all. We had just one evening meal in the restaurant and from start to finish the three course meal took over 3 hours to complete .The rest of the hotel is very much as you would expect from a hotel in a large chain. The bedrooms always seem small and claustrophobic and finding them, especially when arriving, dragging the aforementioned cases, another nightmare. If in the area would we go again ?, I doubt it. Incidentally having ventured out one night, the coach returning us would not even enter the grounds, presumably because of the dust, and dropped us on the main road abutting the hotel entrance The dusty walk in good clothes and shoes that night was awful. I feel other hotels in the area would offer, overall, more 'user friendliness'

« Best of the Best »

Excellent location, fantastic staff, good facilities what more could one ask for? Only downside is that this review needs a minimum of 200 words before I can submit it. How stupid is that? This is still not enough! Ah, made it!

    3
    « Not very welcoming »

Stayed one night when trains back to London cancelled. I found staff at front desk rather cold in manner on leaving. I was very surprised there was no bottled water supplied in room as I would expect one bottle in a hotel of this price and range. It was a sweltering day. I noticed some bottles at reception and asked for one ad it was still v hot next day. I was charged for this and told mineral water in the rooms was in the minibar fridge and not free !!! Also there was a stain on the room curtains. I would avoid in future. Pity as nice location with the moat

    3
« quiet and distant from the city »

The Moat House is a convenient but uninspiring sixteen-minute walk from Winnersh Triangle railway station along the busy B3270, far away from the shops and restaurants of central Reading. It seems geared for people with cars (or taxis). If you want to escape the noise of Reading city centre, and can accept a full-on suburban experience, then this is the hotel for you. The attached Poachers Pub offers reasonable standard British pub food, although the walk to it, across a narrow road bridge plied by big cars, could be better (I'm not so keen on this moat motif in general), and there is no option for food outside the hotel within walking distance. The commute to the University of Reading can be extremely slow in the morning, as it runs through a neighbourhood dominated by school runs. A coffee-maker in the room would have been a plus. The carpets on the staircases need updating. On the whole, this is a quiet albeit uninspiring hotel appropriate for travellers with cars.

    3
    « Disappointing ... Needs an update »

Reading is a lovely town ... and the Moat House used to be a lovely place to stay. Now it looks disappointingly uncared for ... and dated. With one notable exception, the staff seemed to be simply going through the motions, at both the Front Desk and the lounge. Not unpleasant, but just lacking any appearance of engagement with their jobs or guests. Housekeeping was disappointing as well. We noticed that dishes and bottles were left outside a couple of rooms on the afternoon we checked in ... and were still there the next day! All in all, a rather disappointing stay.

    « Customer service excellent »

Had a lovely time again, met the manager Simon, he said anything you need come and seem me, I thank him and said I have everything I need. Had a lovely meal in the hotel, I asked for a room not far to walk and I got what I asked for, room was once again very good. Hope to visit again.

We stayed overnight on the 17th of June 2017. We stayed in an Executive Room. Beautiful room very well furnished and the bathroom was great. Good food and the staff were great. We enjoyed dinner and the breakfast the following day was very good indeed. We will come again. Thank you Vivienne and Barry Watson

    « Disappointing »

We stayed here at best western moat house reading on the 10th. We stayed in 409. Whilst the hotels exterior was lovely as was the entrance and lobby our disappointment started once we opened our door. The bedroom was beautiful and the bathroom equally so. However we was a party of three myself hubby and our 11 yr old son. So everything was set up for just two. Main bed was made with towel set two in the wardrobe and set one in the bathroom. We was all going to get ready in the hotel for the party so had to share towels. I would have asked for an extra set but tbh once I rang through with the complaint that the sofabed wasn't made up and that there was only two spare pillows in the wardrobe, they sent the manager down to look over the situation he left to get the bedding, came back to make it up but was attempting to put a single into a double cover. My husband suggested he just put the duvet into a single. He agreed and went off however this lead to another problem in that he had a very strong odour problem leaving our room smelling awful. This should never of happened in the first place. The booking was clearly for three 2 adults and a child. Every Travelodge stay the beds have been made up accordingly just as at the premier Inn. I was very disappointed.

« Excellent Hotel and facilities »

Travelled down from on the train from Manchester arriving at Reading Central Station, the Hotel is about a 20 minute taxi ride. Was checked in promptly, I've stayed a few times so knew the layout, offered a room on the second floor, here for 2 nights giving some training at Sage down the road. Massive bed, immaculately clean and nice size TV. Free WIFI, not the fastest but better than having none :) Shower powerful enough to remove skin ... fantastic. Small gym near reception, good enough for a quick workout. I ate my evening meal on the first night in the hotel, on the pricey side but extremely good (try the Sirloin ... superb) 2nd night went to the Poachers pub next door (watch your step over the bridge ...), equally good but a bit cheaper. Overall another great stay, if you're going to the Triangle, book yourself on the free shuttle the night before as it fills up quick. TIP: If you're driving, don't park in the bottom car park, it's not unusual for it to flood with a few drops of rain ...

    « Lovely stay »

We stayed there for a night and loved our stay. We booked a family room which was spacious, bright and smelled fresh. The staff was courteous and helpful. The place was fully booked during the long weekend (a wedding, a birthday party, two tourists coach!) and did their best to support all the guests. A bit more lively due to all the celebrations around us. The food is great - we tried pizza, garlic bread, tomato basil soup and Eaton mess. Everything was made to perfection and tasted great. One of the rare places where my son would not mind to revisit!!

« Good Hotel, friendly Staff »

Stayed a night, had junior suite which was excellent. Staff were always helpful and friendly (including free toothbrush when needed). Room was very clean, hotel was very clean. Room was extremely comfortable. Because of jet lag woke up and some silly time to find free coffee machine available downstairs, nice touch. Breakfast was excellent. Just a good hotel absolutely no complaints.

    5
    « Great service »

Came here for a 70th party, the staff very helpful and the hotel is very pristine. Service was brilliant and the food excellent. Parking is easy and although the grounds tend to flood in winter there is plenty of safe parking. Very good location... close to Reading, Wokingham and the M4

    « Good for a night »

I stayed here with friends for one night. If you know Best Western then you know that this is just like all the others. The staff were friendly and we checked in with no problem at all. My room was on the ground floor. It was small and overlooked the car park but I was only staying for one night, so that was fine. Everything was clean and tidy and the bed was comfortable. The room was quite hot at night though and I couldn't quite get the air-con to do what I wanted it too. The bathroom was okay, clean and the shower sort of adequate. For a chain hotel this was no different to all the others - it does what it says on the tin.

« warm welcome from friendly staff »

Upgraded rooms are quaint and much nicer than standard rooms. Staff are friendly and helpful. On site pub great for a quiet pint and meal which gets sent through from the main kitchen anyway. Great for staying whilst on business locally.

« Excellent overnight DBB stay after long haul flight »

We booked this hotel DBB package to break our journey home after an overnight long haul stay heading north from Gatwick. We were extremely delighted when we arrived at the hotel 2 hours before checking in time and we were able to access our room and get some much needed sleep. The room was lovely, warm and peaceful. After our rest we had a lovely evening with drinks in the bar and a nice 3 course meal. Staff were very friendly. Car parking was good. All in all this was a very pleasant short stay we just wished we could have explored the area a little but we were ready to return home.

    « Good location & great staff »

it was my first time staying at this hotel. Staff where great and couldn't have been nicer. I had a large room and was clean and comfy. Good breakfast and little pub across from the hotel was lovely with great food. Only issue was a fire alarm going of in the morning and having to stand outside while the staff seemed a bit confused as to what they where doing.

    5
    « Overnight stay »

We stayed here as it was conveniently located close to the Berkshire Masonic Centre; an excellent choice. Friendly staff; excellent facilities and a comprehensive English breakfast. I've no hesitation in recommending to others and would certainly book to stay again.

« Great staff, great stay »

Just returned from 3 nights at this hotel, the staff couldn't do enough for you, nice room, dog friendly as never experienced before, 2 dog bowls in the room plus a bed, and sausages for Ash's breakfast. Well happy will definateley stay again.

« This place was reasonable with plenty of parking »

We stayed here for just one night when passing through and for this purpose it was ideal. Reception was fine as was the room. Drinks in the hotel bar were a little pricey. We would stay again but only if we just wanted a bed. It appeared popular.

« Excellent value, much nicer than we expected it to be! »

Spacious, modern and clean, in a pleasant location, wide choice for breakfast. Unfortunately the fire alarm went off early in the am, but these things happen. Friendly service too. Much better than expected at such a good rate!

« Nice stay but spoilt by extremely rude waitress! »

We regularly stay here when visiting family in Reading. Lovely hotel in lovely peaceful surroundings but unfortunately our visit was slightly spoilt by a very rude unprofessional waitress. We checked out and went into the bar to grab a coffee before we left. The bar was empty so we returned to reception to ask where we might get a coffee. The receptionist was lovely and polite and asked us to follow her into the bar where she politely called over a waitress/member of staff who was walking towards the bar. The staff member was very stroppy and very unprofessional and snapped at the receptionist saying "Yes, I was just opening up the bar!!". We were quite taken aback by her attitude and she continued to crash and bang around in a very stroppy manner behind the bar. I found this extremely rude and her attitude not acceptable towards customers so we decided to leave telling her not to bother. We went for coffee elsewhere. Real shame that this individuals behaviour and attitude let the hotel down.

    « Great Place »

I have stayed at the Moat House on numerous occasions - It's easy access to the motorways as well as Reading and the train station makes it ideal and being on the river the outside bar especially in the summer is a bonus. Rooms are very nice - Service is normally good and the food is good. Would recommend this hotel.

« A comfortable hotel recenty refurbished.Generous self-service breakfasting but slow dining room service at night. »

I enjoyed a comfortable 4 night stay here. The rooms are well furnished and the hotel has recently been refurbished. The staff are helpful and attentive to their guests. The only critiscm is the slow service in the dining room at night.

    « Lovely hotel »

We stayed in this lovely hotel the last bank holiday. Was a last minute booking. We had a executive room which was over the river with a lovely view. The room had a comfortable bed, a stocked fridge, tea/coffee, hairdryer and a nice bathroom. Spotlessly clean. Had a three coarse meal which was great and a help yourself breakfast. Staff were nice and friendly too. Would definitely stay here again.

    4
    « Dated but acceptable »

Nice hotel with friendly staff. Slightly dated but perfect for a few nights stay. Room was very clean with a huge comfortable bed. Felt £3.50 was rather expensive for a bottle of tap water from the bar. Breakfast was very good so overall a nice hotel to stay in.

    « Great hotel »

We stayed for a Hen Party and had a lovely stay. The staff were very professional and helpful. Occasionally we had some trouble making ourselves understood but that's to be expected from a group of 6 hens! The rooms were spacious and clean. Bathrooms were nice. Breakfast was really good and lots of choice. We did the afternoon tea and that was good too. Would definitely recommend and stay again. Great place to stay if you're off to the Nirvana spa as it is just up the road!

« Good hotel - with friendly staff »

We stayed in the Hotel for one night and had a good time. Staff, Food and rooms good. there was a Coach group (OAPs) that had been there from Thursday, 4 nights and the Lift had not worked since then and looked like no attempt to get sorted !!!! There was a couple of things that could make this hotel loads better. on arrival asked for couple of cups of coffee and got half filled cups. No dedicated staff serving at bar. restaurant table had creased table cloth, No salt & pepper on any tables then when got was empty and had to ask to have it filled, Rolls and butter as you sit for meal where charges extra !!!.

    5
    « Lovely stay »

From moment we arrived, we were greeted warmly, and this is something that continued throughout our stay. Everyone we met was friendly and made an effort to ensure sure we had everything we wanted/needed. We stayed in an executive room overlooking the river, and it was very quiet, spacious with a comfy bed. It is in the old part of the building, and as such, there are some creaky floorboards, but in a building this old, that is to be expected and adds to the charm and character of it. Our package came with £25 each towards dinner, so we booked a table at the restaurant and had a fantastic meal, where we shared a starter and had a main and pudding each, and it came in just under £50 which was nice, especially as I had a steak! We also went for a walk around the area and discovered a park with peaceful paths along the river, which was not something we expected at this location, so another bonus for the hotel. All in all, I can't fault this place and will be recommending it to others. Thank you to everyone who made our stay there such a relaxing one!

    3
    « Mediocre »

We managed to get a family room for £60 on a last minute deal. As we stay up near the Merlin attractions a lot we decided to check it out, to see if it would normally be worth paying the extra from our usual Premier Inn / Travelodge. Check in was fine and the room was clean and tidy but there was nothing at all that made it feel any different from the other chain hotels. Our daughter was on a sofa bed, which was OK because she is little, but anyone over the age of 10 would have a very uncomfortable night on it. Disappointed as we were expecting something worth the usual £220 price tag. We will definitely go back to the other chains.

    « That's not a moat... »

This is a good clean hotel with nice rooms and plenty of space. Didn't eat at the hotel but did call in to the Poacher's pub next door but didn't stay for food. Be careful crossing the bridge from the hotel to the pub as it could be your last trip ever... It's really dangerous and the cars do not slow down to let you cross safely. There is no footpath and it's badly lit. Not sure on the theme of the moat because it's only a stream... We had a great time here at this hotel though, the walls were thick and we both slept well in comfortable beds. The bathroom was lovely and spacious and clean too.. Thumbs up to the beds as they had legs.

« Opulent decor but tired in places »

This is a great hotel that has a beautiful and well manned reception and a nice bar, although getting served was a bit of a wait as the hotel was particularly quiet and we were the only people in the bar. The last time this hotel was decorated was a long time ago although it still looks clean and tidy but you can see some of the features had been around for a while. This was especially evident in the bathroom as this had seen slightly better days. The water was piping hot and cleanliness was of a high standard although the room was very small and the bed was very low. I am use to 1200 thread count sheet and duvet cover and the cotton was a touch rough for me although I slept well eventually. Only one towel in the bathroom which was a bit of a disappointed and no heated towel rail. There were however a trouser press and an ironing board in the cupboard to there was no need to call to have one bought your room. Breakfast was nice and plentiful and very much enjoyed and there was ample parking out the front of the house hotel. Made a change from the sterile surroundings of the premier inn and had a touch more character although this was reflected in the rack rate for a nights stay with breakfast at £14.95

    « Such a shame »

I used to stay at this hotel regularly on business and was always pleased with the experience as the staff were friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble. I stayed there last night for the first time in several months and didn't recognize any members of staff. My room smelt slightly of cigarettes but as i had already changed once I decided to stay even though the bed felt like the springs had gone. I joined my colleagues for dinner - the food was good but the waiter had to be reminded to bring bread with the starters, vegetables with the main course and milk for the tea and coffee. I ordered breakfast to be delivered to my room at 7.00 the following morning which I had to chase up three times and it finally arrived 40 minutes late minus the butter, jam and tomato ketchup. I asked the waiter why, when they had a cappuccino machine in the restaurant, was I served badly stewed coffee. Disappointing all round.

Chose this hotel when it came up on Secret Escapes as it's only 5 minutes from our daughter and family. Offer includes (as Secret Escapes say) breakfast and 3 course meal although when you get there you get a credit for £23 per person which is ample in fact but possibly you'd have to pay a little extra if you went for the 3 courses. Our family joined us and we all enjoyed a lovely evening and good food. All the staff throughout our stay were very helpful friendly and courteous. Breakfast is a help yourself affair and again plenty of choice lovely staff. I would definitely stay again with that offer.

« Excellent hotel and good vakue for money at the weekend »

First time I have stayed at this hotel, usually stay at Holiday Inn J10. This was very compatible with Holiday Inn. In fact we preferred the breakfast and service here. Staff and service was excellent. Hot food at breakfast was made to order so excellent. Room was well appointed and partcualrly liked the bathroom. Only minor complaint would be the noisy plumbing when ther heatring came on at about 5.30am.

« Good stay for the price using a "Leisure Break" »

We were upgraded to an executive room being BW members. The room we were given had low wooden beams that basically get in the way, other than that it was OK. We were woken up at 6.30 by music playing somewhere near and a phone call stopped it quickly so I suppose it might have been the kitchen.

    « Great hotel. »

We have stayed at this hotel a couple of times now and each stay has been great. Having stayed in both the standard and executive rooms we have found the rooms very clean and adequately equipped with all you need. The hotel itself is clean and the staff very helpful and friendly, lounge bar area nice and cosy and a nice place to sit and relax, as is the adjoining pub which both serve nice food and drinks at reasonable prices. Would defiantly recommend for a coupe of days away from it and will be returning in the very near future when one of the hotels great offers come up.

« Stay over for a separate function »

Well, getting no answer on the phone at reception 2 days before checking in should have been our first concern ! The room was reasonable and clean, but on return from our night out we went to the bar for a night cap to find a queue of people waiting at the bar ! 3 people behind bar but only 1 working with 2 watching ? Asked for 3 bags of crisps and had loads of packs put on the bar ? Then followed back to our seat to be asked if we where hungry we could order food from kitchen ? As for breakfast we came down at 9-30 to no cups to make tea or coffee no bread to toast no orange juice,no food on hot plate and when stuff did arrive everything was a 10 minute wait with a queue of people wanting stuff ! And when we complained we were told chef only has 1 pair of hands ? Very rude staff who seemed more concerned with clearing plates then bringing out food !! Very disorganised !

    « executive rooms lovely »

we had a one night stay on a dinner bed and breakfast rate and you could not fault it, great value for money. The room was very nice with feature beams, good black out blinds and a comfy bed. the dinner was good, nothing special but suited our needs. The breakfast was good and we would definitely stay here again.

    « Excellent weekend stay »

We stayed for a weekend here and I can't fault it. The staff were very welcoming, the chef excellent and the room was clean, quiet and had a good bathroom. This is a good location with plenty of parking and walks from the hotel. I noticed there were dogs coming and going with their owners, so I will return with my dog to walk the tow path by the Reading Festival site. We went to the pub on site and watched live music which was good.

    « Weekend break »

I stayed here for two nights (Friday & Saturday) and enjoyed my stay overall. The hotel was clean and the staff friendly and helpful. The breakfast buffet was good with the usual suspects such as egg, bacon, sausages, beans, cereals, fruit, yoghurt, bread, pastries etc. Hot drinks are served from a machine and I have to say that the coffee was very good. Service at dinner was at times on the slow side but as I had company this wasn't really an issue. My room was clean with a tv, hair drier, safe (free to use) and a selection of toiletries in the bathroom. Check in/out was quick and easy. There is free wi-fi (renewable every 24 hours) and your personal password is obtained from reception. The one negative thing I would say about this hotel is that if you have a room facing the attached pub then do not expect to get any sleep before midnight (at least on a Saturday night) as the music from this pub was extremely loud (I have hearing problems but could make out exactly what songs were playing). Thankfully it eventually stopped at midnight. Despite this, I would stay here again but if it was a weekend I'd ask for a quitter room.

Excellent service from all staff, executive room was clean, tidy and well furnished. Breakfast was excellent with a good variety available and a good buffet. Although we did not use the restaurant the menu looked comprehensive and the bar staff were very friendly. Overall a good experience and would recommend this hotel for short stays.

    « Good night's stay »

A very pleasant experience with friendly professional staff. (the bed could have been a bit softer) A delicious dinner and a good breakfast the next morning to set us on our way. Will definitely stay here again.

    « Will not be returning ... »

Very disappointed by my stay here; I went for this hotel as I thought the standard would be good. However, the standard of cleaning was very poor and several items of room equipment were not working. Staff responded to my concerns but I'm afraid I won't be returning.

    4
    « Good Service »

Very good service and excellent location. Décor a little tired in places and the bed very uncomfortable. Would definitely use again. Staff very friendly even though hotel very busy. Breakfast was good, but Sunday morning was extremely busy and therefore a challenge for staff to keep everything 'topped up'.

    « Nice stay »

Just stayed overnight whilst visiting the area. The hotel building hasn't the best first impressions but is very nice inside. Checking-in was easy and we were made to feel most welcome. We stayed in one of the "old mill" rooms and found it spacious, clean and well equipped. Our only issue was the room was very warm and I couldn't find any way to turn down the heating (in hindsight I should have whacked the air-con for a bit...just felt not quite right in October?). We had dinner in the restaurant and were pleased with the quality of food and professionalism of the staff. Breakfast room was very busy so we ate in the bar area which was no problem; buffet breakfast was very good, excellent hot and cold choice. Would recommend for anyone visiting Reading or the local area; I shall use it as my first choice.

« Good hotel ,However lack of attention to detail »

I stay here frequently on business so get to see the turnover in staff and the subsequent issues that arise from that like training etc.....Overall the hotel is clean and tidy but getting tired. The staff are friendly however they always appear to be completely under staffed. One person doing checkouts at 8:00 am not good and this always seems to be the case. Room service good and prompt

« Ok but tired and needs a refurb »

Stayed on Saturday for a local family celebration. Staff friendly on check in, in the bar and for breakfast on Sunday morning. The hotel itself feels tired. Our 3rd floor room was clean but does feel like it has been a long time since the last renovation. It could do with the next update arriving soon. Also the heating made the communal areas feel like a sauna!

On arrival hadn't been upgraded but on asking was upgraded to an executive room which are feature rooms with the old beams in with windows overlooking the mill stream. « Not great »

This is the second visit here the first was good last year however standards have dropped. .i was in one of the disabled access rooms which had a very uncomfortable bed but even worse was the state of the shower hose where it joins onto the taps and bath overflow cover and tiles. i could scrape the black mould off these items with my nail pretty disgusting! I am a ceoliac and therefore unable to eat gluten . I had a bar meal on the night of my stay and was assured that it was gluten free, however it most certainly was not and i spent the whole of my nights stay being extremely ill and it also made me unable to compete with my dog as a disabled handler the next day which was the whole reason for my trip there from Devon ! Not at all amused !!!

    « our opinions »

A very good place to stay if in that area, clean comfortable and easy access to major road networks, one small comment to make in the negative is the bathroom fan extractor appeared not to be working, maybe it was not meant to be?

« They even accept dogs »

Was pleasantly surprised that we were able to let our dog stay with us especially on new years eve. Bed was lovely and comfortable and staff are really accommodating. Would definitely recommend staying over night again.

    « Good pleasant surprise »

Stayed here on business not able to book into the usual hotel I use. Slight reservation on booking, as I have had a mixed experience with Best Western hotels. I've got to say I was pleasantly surprised. Rooms are spacious, clean, staff were friendly, breakfast was good. The hotel would have got a higher rating if the room hadn't felt damp, and the bathroom needed a refresh, but overall my opinion of Best Western has improved slightly.

    « Business »

Beautiful hotel not far from reading town centre and only a short commute to London Staff were helpful and meals enjoyable but not a big menu I wish I could have stayed longer. Travel by car not far from the M4 so a good central point for exploring the surrounding area. I believe there is fishing allowed in the adjacent river.

« Great location, friendly, clean & comfortable »

Really good location for 80's Rewind. The buffet breakfast was really good, with an excellent choice of hot and cold food. The bar was really nice in the evenings & the reception and catering staff very polite and helpful. The rooms were clean & comfortable, if a tiny bit tatty in places, but the cleanliness made up for it! The old mill is a lovely building and it has been nicely restored & extended. Good secure parking and a lovely quiet location, even though it is near a main road. The pub (Poachers Pub), was really good too & just a short walk from the hotel.

« Expensive for what it offers »

For £150-£200 a night over a mile from the nearest station and near Reading not London this hotel needs a makeover. The highlight are the staff. Service is friendly, efficient and helpful. Can't fault anything anyone said or did. But they are badly let down by the creaking facilities. Check in and Check out takes far too long, likely due to duff IT from the parent company. The air conditioning is primative, average, or broken dependent on the room you're in. Leaving some in our party facing a sauna while only 24 degrees outside. Meeting rooms in the conference facility can be greenhouse like, as was the restaurant. The evening meal was good. Mid-range pub grub standard at hotel prices. Tasty and good portions, well served. Bar was basic. Really no excuse for such a poor and boring range of choices at this price point. Staff should be allowed to bring in some more imaginative options. Breakfast was what you might expect from a chain. At least of motels in a desert, not rural Berkshire. The scrambled eggs had an unusual chewy texture and taste that suggested only the most fleeting acquaintance with a chicken. Hash browns were dripping with fat, black pudding under-cooked, bacon at least was good. As was the cold buffet. Coffee machines acceptable. So mixed bag. Would not return out of choice. Perhaps need more competition in the area if they can get away with these prices and still be fully booked.

« nice hotel, good location »

The location is excellent for both Winnersh and Reading, and not too far from Slough and Maidenhead. There is a barrier to the car park on entry, and you need to collect a token from reception for the barrier to get out again! Checking in is a very simple process, and the reception staff are efficient. Rooms are pleasant and clean, not over large but adequate, the beds are big and comfy. The showers also wake you up very nicely in the morning! Only criticism I would have is the tea/coffee tray is found in the wardrobe and because the desk space is quite small there isn't a lot of room to plug in the kettle. Food in the restaurant is good and portion sizes are reasonable, they do a really good superfood salad! Breakfast is also good, buffet style and food is hot and plentiful but there will sometimes be queues at the coffee machines! The last time I stayed, there was a coach tour in, and there were no tables available for our party of 6, the staff very quickly organised us a table in the adjacent bar area so we were not held up. Overall, it's a reasonably priced hotel, food prices are average, alcohol is a bit expensive but most hotel bars are, staff are helpful and friendly.

« Good hotel with nice rooms but some fittings a bit worn »

Stayed here for one night on business. Layout is a little strange as you arrive with a bridge or road route due to a small stream running across the front but once you get in its fine. Wellcome was friendly and the reception clean and efficient. I was in the old part of the building and the walkway had some interesting character wooden beams. This theme continued in the room with a number of character beams and a really nice feel to the room. Bathroom had a bath but some of the grouting and handles on the wall were a little second hand, the bath handle coming away from the wall and the grouting on the floor with gaps. The room had a nice feel and the bed was Ok, though it had a spring poking up, and I had a good nights sleep. WiFi was a good speed and tv was usual free view channels. Breakfast was quite comprehensive however there was no reduced price for continental only so my cereal and coffee was expensive at £10 Overall a mixed bag and a touch expensive if you include the breakfast cost but I would stay here again.

« Friendly. Clean and comfortable »

We stayed here whilst visiting legoland. It was a bit further than i would normally have chose but i wanted a Best Western. Everything was great room clean and comfy. Breakfast was great my 6 year old daughter made a comment of how nice it was and this is rare. If i have a problem it is the Poachers pub which is very nice but the food is very slow. I understand the prepared fresh thing as i have experience in the trade but this was at a time when the pub was not busy. When the food finally arrived after 40 minutes it was great. The walk over the bridge is a little concerning and a back route from hotel to pub would be a very welcome improvement.

Stayed here at the start of August while on a training course for work. Very comfortable and clean rooms and a great pub/restaurant attached. Food was very very good and I had a pint of Guinness that would rival some of the best I've had in Ireland! Fair play to the bar staff! Recommended!

« One night stopover in Reading »

We enjoyed a bed and breakfast and a meal in the restaurant at this hotel which was clean and well maintained. The room was a family room for my wife and I and our son and the hotel made up a double bed and 2 extra beds to choose from which unfortunately reduced the space in the room somewhat. The room and bathroom were clean and tidy, the food was nice, the staff were friendly and overall we had a good stay. Car parking was ample and free too which is always a bonus!

Myself and colleagues always stay at this hotel when in the area as it's close to our office, a large hotel with loads of rooms and car parking, with a good restaurant and attached pub. « Should be better than this for a 'Plus' »

Booked a special adapted room for my disabled husband. When we arrived we checked that a special seat, we asked for, was in the room and advised it was, when we got to room 117, the bathroom was wide enough but there was no seat and the shower was over the bath. The biggest issue I have is that the doors don't open automatically and we had to struggle to pull them open and still push him through, the bedroom is not wide enough to get a wheelchair around the side of the bed to even get in....Also, humiliatingly, the stair lift was broken so we had to go through the function rooms, through someone's 60th birthday party (through 3 rooms!) to get to the reception desk. You made my husband feel humiliated and as though everyone was staring at him. Considering this is a 4 star hotel,. allegedly, this was an appalling stay - we would have done better at a Premier Inn...

    « Leisure Break »

Unable to use any restaurant facilities in the evening as they were all being used for functions. This had been pointed out to me when I booked my room and I was told that room service would be available. The food that I ordered from the menu was very disappointing and it was delivered with the wrong salad. The correct salad arrived 40 minutes after I'd eaten the cooked part of my meal.

« A few hiccups but overall a great experience »

I have stayed in this hotel many times before, the staff are excellent but this time something was a miss. Ordered nachos which arrived without any chilli con carne. Quickly rectified by the staff, So although the chef was asleep a good recovery was implemented, a few issues with the breakfast booking but again professionaly dealt with by the staff. Still a great hotel and I will be returning, go, you will enjoy it!!!

« Very Nice But Busy Second Night Let Service Down »

We stayed here last year for Royal Ascot and were very happy so this year stayed again. When we arrived at the Moat House for a 2 night stay we were greeted by a very efficient receptionist who informed us that as we were Best Western reward card holders we had been upgraded, very nice. The room was in the executive wing built over the river and was lovely with wooden beams and pillars in the rooms, very old, full of character but with all modern comforts. Super huge fluffy bath towels and all toiletries we expect from Best Western. The first night we ate in the Poachers pub which is part of the hotel but round the back, a short precarious walk over a small but busy traffic bridge. Visibility vests are provided by the hotel for guest to use but take care. It would not be the same if the bridge was modernised to take pedestrians as well but just be aware, it is lovely. The meals were good value with a varied menu, not cheap but the area and hotel are not in a cheap location and if you want quality, you pay. After an excellent day at Royal Ascot, we ate in the hotel restaurant. Another guest who was already in the restaurant had a conversation with a member of staff about how long he had been waiting and how he was now leaving. We ordered and received our starter in good time and it was lovely toasted garlic bread. Unfortunately we then had to wait some time probably 45 minutes for our main meal. Three of the meals were lovely but the Piri-piri Chicken was very overcooked, tough and probably had been kept hot waiting for the other meals to be ready. We spoke to a member of staff about it and how it was so tough and overcooked it needed a steak knife to cut it, he offered to get one, not what we expected. Shortly after Gabby a restaurant supervisor came and spoke to us about the chicken and how could she make it right. She offered a free sweet, another meal or what would we like. By this time 3 of us were finishing our meals so we decided not to have anything else. Gabby arranged to take that meal off the bill. Gabby therefore gets a well done for her efforts in trying to keep the customer happy. Another couple who had arrived shortly after us spoke to a member of staff as their meals had not arrived. The staff member apologised and gave them a complimentary drink to make up for the delay. It turns out that there was a wedding on that day and the staff were extremely busy and just could not cope. The staff that were there were doing as much as they can but there was just not enough staff. So no complaints about the staff but the management should have made sure there was enough staff to look after all the guests. This is a quality hotel in a lovely location, easy to get to, plenty of parking, normally good food, not cheap but worth it. We were disappointed at the service and food on the second night but the blame must lay at the management and not the staff. We will however stay again as things do go wrong and it is how they are out right that makes a difference. Well done Gabby your efforts have convinced us to give Best Western another chance next year.

    « BEST, BEST WESTERN »

What a great place to stay. I have just returned from a coach tour to Hampton Count Flower Show, where we stayed overnight at this hotel. The Room was well appointed and clean with an excellent shower. The service we received was above reproachent and the portarage helpful after a longish journey from Devon. The evening meal was above expectation, as usually package deals seem to present second class meals, but not so in this case. The meal was well presented and with friendly efficiency in a relaxed atmosphere. A really satisfying experience. Breakfast was also varied and hot where necessary. Overall an enjoyable experience, I highly recommnend it.

« Service and food disappointing »

The accommodation was satisfactory, the service and food was not. We were a party of 10 on business. After a long day, we decided to meet in the restaurant and have a meal together. On arrival we were told that we had to eat in the Bar this was at 7pm! We all ordered together but, our food arrived at different times, some taking half an hour longer! The quality of the food when it arrived looked as if it had been purchased in ASDA. and poorly cooked.

« Excellent quality & value for money. »

Stayed here with relatives for a family meet up. As it had to be equidistant for all travelling I trawled through many hotels in the vicinity and came across this and was not disappointed. Impressive throughout from entrance to the room itself. Breakfast priced at £14.95 so gave it a miss as I read reviews buffet style, perhaps if built into overall price it may not seem such an obstacle. Drinks and meals fairly priced however for quality of hotel and locality. Would not hesitate to go back again.

    « WEEKEND WITH FRIENDS »

We were very impressed with our executive room - an unexpected upgrade. The room was clean, comfortable with a refreshment tray, water and nice bits in the bathroom. Breakfast was also very good with lots of choice, freshly cooked full breakfast items and even freshly cooked bread. However we were very disappointed by the dining experience. My husband is a coeliac and must eat only gluten free food. When I booked a table for dinner I was assured he would be well catered for. Not true! His choices were limited initially to two - one starter and one main neither of which he wanted. All allergens were listed on a 'tablet' and we had to wait for 20 minutes whilst it was being used by another guest. There was no flexibility within the menu such as substituting a g/f option for a non g/f one. Finally we found another mains which was gluten free. He would have had more choice had the chipped potatoes been gluten free but they are bought in and coated with flour. We all enjoyed our meals when we finally got them but the experience of finding a gluten free option took us back 20 years when my husband was first diagnosed and g/f fare was not so widely available. We would recommend for the accommodation but if you are a coeliac your choices are very limited in the dining room. We found a pub/restaurant the following night and it was the totally opposite experience.

This is a very efficient, relaxing hotel with comfortable accommodation, friendly helpful staff, good food and good service. It is situated in a quiet location but with good acess to public transport which we used as we travelled there by train. I would definitely stay again and recommend to my friends and family.

    « Clean and Comfortable »

I stayed at the hotel for 4 nights. It was clean and comfortable. The room was warm although it was cold outside and the central heating had already been switched off in anticipation of Summer. The breakfast is really good with a lot of variety. I ordered room service dinner one night and this arrived timeously and was exactly what I anticipated. The staff are friendly and professional. My transport had been arranged for me with First Class Executive which was brilliant as there is nothing close to the hotel to walk to. I saw a lot of business related guests like me and at least one family who were enrolling their children in the nearby Reddam House private boarding school.

Went to a private function in a private room on a Sunday, we were served a roast beef dinner as a main - well, the beef was like rubber, hard to chew, the Yorkshire puddings were like 2 days old, the veg was caked in pepper, nobody on our table finished their plate. Have stayed at this Hotel most years for the last 8 years, always good, great staff, love the location and love the fact their is a pub attached for more relaxed dining and for a drink especially when the sun is shining with the outdoor seating. We will be back again soon

    « Nice and quiet »

We stay overnight as a group. The hotel is nice, warm, and just what you need for one night stay. I noticed there is always just one person on the reception- and when a group comes, there is a mess and place becomes crowded. The room is not too big, bathroom is clean. We had dinner at the hotel- it was delicious. We skipped breakfast, becouse we were in a hurry, so I can t say anything about it. Parking is big and spacious. Hotel is near a highway, but I didn t hear the traffic during the night.

« Lovely hotel and staff, shame about disabled facilities »

Firstly let me say the staff and duty manager were very good and helpful but the hotel was not disabled-friendly. My wife, who walks with a walking stick and is registered disabled, and I stayed here one night for our wedding anniversary. On arrival only two disabled spaces outside, and one of these was coned off. Entrance to the hotel was via steps up to reception, no disabled ramp; there was a chair lift but it was out of order (found out it hasn't worked for 3 weeks or more). When booking we requested a ground floor room but we were informed on booking in that there were no ground floor rooms and we were on the first floor although there was a lift. The room was an Executive; well appointed apart from the fact I am 6'2" tall and hit my head on the beams in the room and could not stand up in the shower over bath. After being out for the day we came back to the hotel to find the two disabled spaces were both occupied as were the other 3 spaces out front. We ended up parking in the field and followed the signs across a wooden walkway to the hotel; unfortunately at the end of the walkway were many more steps down, again with no disabled assistance. At breakfast this morning there was more steps down to the dining area; we only found out there was an alternative route AFTER my wife had struggled down the steps. All in all, not a good experience for disabled visitors; the duty manager Simon was most apologetic and promised to address the issues I raised with him, time will tell if he does or not.

    « Family visit »

Stayed for 3 days whilst my son was getting married near by and a perfect place for us to stay. I organised for about 30 people to stay at the Moat House liasing with Kerri who was very efficient and helpful. The hotel is top drawer with great rooms, wonderful breakfasts and a pub attached with a beer garden. Everybody in our party were delighted with the hotel and the great price of £75 a night per room for bed and breakfast. FANTASTIC.

« Excellent hotel. Very clean and friendly. »

Stayed here for one week as had a training course during the week at the hotel. The bed was so big I got lost in it. The food in the hotel was admittedly reasonably expensive but it was very good quality. The staff are super friendly and nothing is too much to ask! Also very close to reading town centre which was a bonus! The breakfast was superb and had a large variety of choice. Also during the course we had lunch each day and unlimited drinks throughout which I thought was bonus. All in all a brilliant hotel and I shall return with my partner when I'm up near that way again! 5/5

    « Good all round »

Enjoyed an overnight stay at Reading Moat House, staff exceptionally welcoming and helpful. Our room was perfectly clean and everything well presented. The only reason we didn't feel it merited excellent was because my husband felt the full English breakfast wasn't anything to write home about, however, apart from that the food and service was excellent !

    « Great Stay - Quaint hotel »

This hotel is a little quirky, entering reception by crossing over a wooden bridge from the car park. The staff on reception are warm and friendly - even enquiring whether I had a favourite room that they could try and get for me in future. Executive rooms in the Old Mill area are the best and very comfortable.

    4
    « Wedding party stay »

The staff are very efficient and helpful. The bar like many of this type of hotel has a very limited choice. The restaurant staff were very helpful when ordering an extra item for a young child but anybody ordering lamb please be aware of the trend for serving lamb rare. The rooms are clean and tidy with very comfortable beds although some small areas of décor need attention. Overall a good comfortable stay.

« Stay here often on Business - Cannot fault it! »

Often book a week here when working in the Winnersh Triangle - this hotel really is great. The staff are really nice, the hotel is modern and clean, and the breakfast is also really good! The only disappointment is when the place is fully booked and I need to stay elsewhere! Also check out the Poachers pub, nice relaxing pint after a day's work.

    « Overall good »

This is a very convenient hotel in nice surroundings if you can block out the busy road that surrounds two sides of it. Be warned the Sat Nav takes you the wrong way so put the full address in. I have had better breakfasts but it was sufficient. Staff very helpful though and kept the restaurant open for us even though we hadn't booked in. We enjoyed a leisurely break which is what we wanted and as we used Tesco vouchers didn't cost us much, I think if I had paid full price it would have been a bit disappointing. Nice pub adjoining which was a treat.

    « Wedding Accommodation »

We stayed overnight for a friend's wedding as they had the reception here. The hotel itself was nice. We had booked one room with an extra bed for our daughter as part of the wedding deal. There was a little confusion at the reception as they said we had booked 2 rooms. On further investigation, they realised that they had given us an adjoining room as there were no extra beds to put in the room, for the same price. The rooms were clean and identical and had adjustable temperature controls, tea/coffee etc, black out curtains, towels, shampoo, showergel, a safe, trouser press, iron and ironing board - so pretty much everything you could need. We were not in the room long as we spent most of the time at the wedding. The mattress was ok, but you did roll together into the middle. We seemed to have noisy neighbours who kept knocking on their door to get in and out well after we had gone to bed at midnight, which was annoying as we kept thinking it was someone knocking on our door! Then I could hear someone talking (possibly outside) and smell cigarette smoke very strongly, but couldn't work out where from. I guess you can't plan for who else might be staying there though!!! The breakfast was your standard buffet with cooked and continental. It was a bit chaotic as it was quite busy. They ran out of hash browns at one point and as soon as they brought more out, they were gone again. We went to the evening part of the wedding reception which was spread out over 3 or 4 connecting rooms. We sat in the room with the disco but found not many people from the other rooms came through to dance, which was a shame. It felt a bit disjointed.

    « Overpriced »

A lovely opulent looking hotel and nice inside. Lovely location and grounds too. Our room however was fairly basic for such a normally high price!! We got our room for a big discount and paid £65. That is plenty for the room we had, but normally the hotel charge well in excess of £200 which just isn't worth it at all. I'd be extremely disappointed and annoyed if I'd paid that! It's just nowhere near worth that! Pretty basic / standard room with a very old bed. Awkward bathroom layout; particularly the sink unit. Breakfast was lovely, but again overpriced in my opinion. We paid £10 each (which is on a par with other hotels, so not too bad) but normally breakfast is £14.95 pp and again that's just too high as it's not worth that. The staff are welcoming, polite and helpful but even they agree that this hotel is too pricey! Oh, and be careful not to park your car in the main car park to the left during rain as you may well come back to find your car under lots of water!!

    « 70's Party Night! »

Went to the Reading Most House as part of a 70's Party Night. Can't fault this hotel, lovely room if a bit on the small side for two twin beds but coffee and tea tray and comfortable beds. No air conditioning in the room and it was quite stuffy and hot in the night. Good bathroom, shower was good, free shampoo/shower gel etc. Really lovely buffet breakfast in the morning just about anything you could imagine was available from hot items like bacon, egg, sausages etc to toast/pastries/cereals/fruit. Lovely reception staff and pretty lobby. Beautiful setting right on the river which on a nice evening would be lovely to sit and have a drink (too cold when we went but there were tables and chairs on the terrace). The 70's disco was a laugh, people dressed up and we danced the night away to sounds of that era. The 3 course dinner was superb, lovely food plenty of it and coffee and mints afterwards!

Lovely rooms, great staff and a good sleep. Decent pub on the side ( a little dangerous walking over the bridge) would certainly stay again and not just for business. Nice gym too and plenty of parking.

« Great hotel close to legoland »

We stayed at this hotel as we were spending the day at legoland and then travelling down to Cornwall, it was great. Room was good, not huge but fine for us and the beds were comfy, everything was clean and staff were very friendly, it was my wife's birthday so I asked for some stew berries and chocolate to come to the room for us and the kids and for very little money they really did a great job, two large platters of large chocolate dipped strawberries, chocolates and some fruit - kids and wife loved the surprise. Breakfast was also great and altogether for a family of four with breakfast it was just £79 which is much cheaper than the LEGO hotel or some that are close by. They also have loads of parking, a nice location by a river, a nice bar and although we didn't go in it apparently the pub connected to it is really nice too - so for the price I don't think it can be faulted. It would be nice to get a couple of bottles of water in the room but otherwise no complaints.

« Low standards, not clean, expensive. »

Conveniently situated for one of our offices, but unfortunately that's where the positives end. Service is very slow - usually only one staff member on reception, so even though there might only be a handful of guests checking in you can be waiting 20 minutes or more. I'm sure the staff speak much better English than I speak their language, but there is definitely a barrier - and the attitude they display varies from curt to unhelpful. Not pleasant having to deal with any of them - except for one lady at the bar, who was very nice. The rooms are dire - dirty, and the bathrooms are unheated (make sure you leave the door open overnight, or you will be showering in an ice box in the morning). The condition is generally filthy, a 3-star Premier Inn shows this a clean pair of heels for the condition of the laundry, etc. I assume its 4-star rating comes from it being the only hotel in the area - the General Manager should be embarrassed... and worried about the next AA inspector visit. Over £200 a night for a basic room in the middle of nowhere is unbelievable. The food is mediocre and expensive for the portions you get - a small cheeseburger with overcooked fries is £13 - wouldn't have minded if the meat was any good, or the chef knew what they were doing, but it isn't, and they don't. If you have a choice, avoid this place - it's a hole.

« Good hotel with excellent staff »

Stayed here as part of a group on a half board basis, thought the hotel was excellent the staff were very friendly and happy to help you any time. Our room was a good size, clean with a comfortable bed, the choice of food was very good, cooked and presented well, breakfast is buffet style. Drinks a bit expensive. Only comment is that it would be nice to have access to the Poachers Pub without having to go out on the narrow road over the bridge.

    « Weekend break away »

Had a really super time here for one night, clean spacious room and bathroom, pleasant staff, excellent breakfast, welcoming bar. On arrival my 7 year old daughter was given an activity pack which I thought was a nice touch. Local pub that is attached is small inside but has a good outside space. Went to a near by restaurant called the Walter and the food was excellent! I would certainly recommend this hotel! Easy to get to and good parking also noticed they run a bus shuttle!

    « Pleasant stay, dinner & breakfast »

Pleasant single night stay. Easy to park, lovely location next to river, polite and helpful on check-in. Room was clean and functional. We had dinner in the restaurant, which is a little pricey, but we had the 2 courses for two with a glass of wine for £37.99 and the food was really good. Sunday breakfast was relaxed and good quality/plentiful buffet style. Good for couples and families.

« Poachers Pub attached to hotel »

Fairly local to this hotel & hate to admit have been going here on & off since 1984, Christmas dinners in the hotel business functions family parties & weddings and not forgetting the nightclub Sindleshams... However not been in the Poachers Pub for many years up until yesterday, when I met with friends to celebrate her birthday. I and several of our friends will now become be regulars once again and I am going to say this is down to a member of staff who was very attentive to us all yesterday afternoon and evening his name was Vic excellent customer service the chap was attentive friendly very pleasant with us all. The food was excellent at least 8 of us there last night and we all enjoyed the bar food. See you again very soon from a few of us locals

    « Very average hotel »

Food very good both in the Poachers pub and room service. Restaurant area and bar/lounge vast and no atmosphere/music and doesn't entice you too use. Bedroom was clean on first appearance but had dirty skirting boards, washbasin and toilet. Wardrobe cluttered making it difficult to hang clothes. Tariffs displayed in foyer incorrect to website.

    « Reading Moat House »

Excellent facilities - Very pleasant and obliging staff - Very large car park - Clean - Usual fixed menu as found in a lot of hotels - the only somewhat down if staying for a period of time - The food actually served was however good and breakfast good to superb choice here. Good public transport access if you don't want the problems of parking in the centre of a very large town.

    « Relaxing night away »

We stayed at this hotel just for a night away and were pleased we found it. Staff were lovely and although rooms need updating, it was very comfortable. We had room service for dinner and the menu was more extensive than other hotels and the food was excellent as was the lovely breakfast next morning. A very pleasant stopover.

« Very good service and nice room »

I have stayed on business for most of the week. Its a very good 4*, rooms have everything in them that you need and are extremly comfy. I was supprised as best westerns are usually not so good and having to book here as other hotels were booked i have been converted. Staff are very good and the service is excellent. Great choice!!!!

    « Really quite good »

This hotel was booked for me last minute. So my first thought was its too far from city centre, but not so can do the centre in 20 mins with free parking just remember to pick up a token to operate the gate. Room good warm comfy big bed that is 2 singles joined together. Food is good with similar Menzies for bar, restaurant, and pub. The pub is a bit unusual as you have to go out the hotel at the back fire exit walk a 150 meters or so risk life and limb crossing a dark road bridge to reach the place but it's worth it good beer and food and same free wifi as hotel which is quite good.

« Never got to stay there, they had over-booked! »

Yes, I turned up for my reservation on 16th March feeling weary from a long journey to be greeted with "Sorry, we are full". What? They admitted to having overbooked, and I was the casualty. The receptionist Jackie was suitably apologetic, and rang another hotel, fortunately managing to book me in there. She said I had to give my personal credit card details to secure the booking even though the original booking had been made and paid for by a company. So I rocked up at the other hotel at 11:10 pm feeling even more tired, and rather irritated. Thank you for Best Western for putting profits before customer service, you really have no excuse. I would say though that Jackie, the receptionist, handled the difficult situation well. I tried not to vent my anger at her because, as she put it, she was "Only the receptionist".

    « Two AGM's back to back »

Recently we held two AGM's for two different organisations, this was not only a challenge for me as the organiser but a challenge for the staff, they all came up trumps and provided excellent service on both days. Lunch was excellent on both days and the facilities were to a high standard. I would recommend this hotel it is smart, a perfect location clean and tidy, everything you need for a business environment

« In need of a refurb and update »

I have stayed here a number of times but not for several years. Lovely position and convenient for motorways / business parks. Quiet and friendly but slightly disinterested staff. Has a very '70s feel to it, really needs an update and surprisingly expensive. Breakfast is below standard hotel buffet. Eggs ( scrambled and fried ) ran out for some time at 08.00 when you would expect the staff to be more on their toes. Good location but very dated

« Very pleasant family stay »

We stayed in a family room for 1 night with 2 small children (one in a cot) and the quality of the accommodation exceeded our expectations. Breakfast was the usual buffet style but there was plenty of variety and it was of good quality.

    « Business only »

Stayed here for two nights for work and its fine for a bed to sleep in and breakfast but that is really it .The gym is very limited with one treadmill one stepper one rower etc so if you get in and the equipment you wanted to use is occupied you are stuck .There is a showcase cinema 10 minutes walk away and a small shopping centre about 15 minutes away and a pub at the back of the hotel which you have to take your life in your hands getting across a narrow bridge that half of reading seem to be using as a rat run Would i stay here yes for work related but not with family .

Easy parking very efficient and friendly staff at check in, I found the the room clean comfortable and had everything I needed, the bar was comfortable and again the staff friendly and efficient in fact when we got back to the Hotel after dinner the Management opened the bar for us (we were a bit late) Breakfast was fine and again the staff were very helpful. Overall it is a very good hotel and will not hesitant to use it again.

    « Nice but uncomfortable »

Have stayed here twice recently, the first time got an upgrade to an 'executive' room, which was modern & nice, the second time in a standard double. But on both my stays, was unable to have a restful nights sleep, due to the extremely hard and uncomfortable beds! A hotel of this supposed standard, charging the prices it does, should really be trying much harder to give its patrons a more comfortable nights rest. I mentioned this on both my stays to the reception & on the last stay, to the management staff. But I was left with the distinct impression that despite many similar reviews, their view is that it is all a personal preference thing and that nothing really needs to be done. Despite their offer of 'some drinks vouchers' next time I stay by way of saying sorry, I shall not be revisiting by choice any time soon. It is not all bad however, the staff are excellent, the guest areas pleasant and the breakfast 'spread' is extensive and well presented. However, even here there is some room for improvement, as I found the tables at breakfast were rarely cleared without prompting and I often had to ask for staff to clear away mess so that we could start the next part of our meal. Over all, just about acceptable, but at the full price it should be better. If you can get a 'deal' and don't mind a v-hard bed, give it a go.

    4
    « Very pleasant stay »

Stayed for a week and found the hotel to be clean, and very well run by an enthusiastic and professional team. My room was clean and bright, with a comfortable bed and all of the amenities I required.

« Mix of Modern and Traditional »

My wife and I stopped overnight here to break a longer journey, the car park and entrance over a wooden walkway is not what you expect, as you walk toward a large modern annex, however there were disabled spaces by the door if needed. The reception area was well finished and modern. We were informed that as a Best Western card holder we had been upgraded, always a welcoming message. Our room was in the old part of the building which would have been part of the water mill back in the day and was directly over the mill stream. The room was a good size and well finished, with some old exposed beams complimenting the style of the room, there was a large modern desk along with a flat screen TV and a proper wardrobe. The bathroom had a decent quality of finish with a shower over the bath. The Hotel lounge bar and restaurant on the evening were very quiet. I suspect there were not many guests that night, we were well looked after with a staff to customer ratio of 1 - 1 ! I think the experience would have been better with more customers milling about, but can not blame the hotel for that. Overall a good stay, and I would be happy to return.

    4
    « Good business hotel »

Excellent if you are staying over for business in the area. The rooms are clean and comfortable and there is a choice of restaurants. There's the hotel bar area and a pub adjoining, although you do have to go outside to get to it. Front desk had friendly and efficient staff. No problems and would happily use again if I was in the area.

    « Pleasant setting »

This hotel was an unusual mill hotel with a river running by. The reception, bar and restaurant areas were very well kept and spacious. The bedrooms were large. The bathroom was functional and clean but not been updated for some time. The bedroom furniture and facilities were good but the bed was extremely uncomfortable with a very worn out saggy mattress.

    4
    « Perfect business retreat »

Can't fault this place as a hotel close to the Winnersh Triangle Business Park. Lovely modern hotel. Upgraded to an executive room upon check in which had all the facilities I could need. Room was modern but tasteful with nice original beams running through it. The narrow road that was adjacent to my room can get busy and road noise can be an issue. Room was cleaned to a good standard. Plenty of supplies as in tea/coffee and the bathroom to came well stocked. Breakfast was plentiful and the cooked selection hot which makes a change as this seems to be an issue at other hotels. All staff pleasant and able to share a joke with you. I had stayed before and was surprised by the new out door lake water feature which turned out to be a section of flooded car park! It's a busy car park anyway and we ended up parking near the entrance barriers, a bit of a walk on a wet evening to reception. We have a corporate rate here but was able to make a saving using a third party booking site. I would definitely stay again

    3
« Lovely setting, friendly staff and good food »

We stayed here just for one night and really enjoyed the experience except for one major difficulty: neither of us got any sleep as the bed was so uncomfortable. The staff were very friendly and helpful, the room was (mostly) very clean, our evening meal and breakfast were both tasty, with plenty of choice. The only thing stopping us from booking in the future is the lack of sleep due to such an uncomfortable mattress. Presumably this is easily rectified, I hope so!

    4
    « Valentine's Day deal »

We booked the Valentine's Day deal of B&B and a 4 course meal in the restaurant. The room was fab the only thing that let it down was the temperature, it was so hot and there was no way of controlling the heating. We ended up having to put the air con on which is ridiculous in the middle of February! The meal was lovely and the waiting staff very attentive.

    5
    « Fab Hotel »

We visited some friends in Reading so 6 of us decided to stay at the Moat House, it was our first time at a Best Western hotel and we were not disappointed, rooms exceeded our expectations everything was spotless, could not fault anything at all except one minor thing cold plates at breakfast so we felt rushed to eat before food went cold, but besides that the breakfast itself was ok, staff friendly and we would all stay again on our next visit to Reading. Would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the Reading area.

    4
« Great value Sunday Roast »

If you are after a Sunday Roast at a reasonable price, then you should visit the Sindlesham mill, they offer 3 courses for two for under £40 between you. The food choice is good, the food is tasty and the service is great. The atmosphere however is old fashioned and very quiet. I think you should open up the main restaurant and promote this offer better as you have a fantastic deal.

    4
    « Hotel Accomodation »

Excellent location of hotel giving good value for money. The large car park could however be made less muddy under foot as it is located on a flood plain. An attached pub provides good food most of day.

« Best Western PLUS Reading Moat House Hotel »

Stayed here many times on business and would recommend to anyone. Good sized rooms, excellent facilities, comfortable bed, friendly and helpfull staff, plenty of parking, good food, in fact everything was really excellent. Book in advance though because it is a very popular hotel in the area.

« Dreadful experience in the restaurant »

We went as part of a large group for Sunday lunch. The service was appalling with dreadful waits. When the food came it was very average and in some cases cold and poor. I was a guest of someone so could not complain at the time but will never go there again. The party was booked in and so we were expected so no excuse for a wait of over an hour for our first course.

« Very impressed. Have stayed her several times. »

A one night stay before our spa retreat at Nirvana Spa. All the staff were very pleasant and the rate was fantastic (£55) as it included breakfast and we also got a free upgrade to an exec room (I hold a Best Western Loyalty Card) The breakfast was plentiful and replenished regularly.

    « Pleasantly surprised! »

We stayed here overnight as we were attending a family function taking place nearby to the Moat House. I actually really like this hotel, it didn't break the bank and the room, the decor, the ambience and the staff were all excellent, as was the breakfast in the morning. Although it is only half an hour from where we live, we will be going back for a relaxing weekend and shopping in Reading.

    « An overnight stay »

Very comfortable room and a good night's sleep apart from being woken up just after 5.00am by the creaking of the pipes as the central heating came on. We were on the ground floor and speaking to friends who also had rooms on the ground floor, they also had the same experience. Apart from that, one could hardly fault it. Breakfast we were spoilt for choice and everything that should have been, was hot. Staff were very helpful and attentive. We will certainly use a Best Western again

    3
« Squeezed in like sardines »

Very disappointed with our 'family' room. The main bed had been reduced in size to allow two single beds to be squeezed into the standard sized room. There was hardly any space between the bed to move, thankfully we arrived late and were away early. I certainly wouldn't want to spend any amount of time in this so called family room.

    « Dog Frindly Christmas »

A lovely 4 day break at Christmas seeing family. Dog allowed in room, and for breakfast in lunge/bar next to restaurant which was really good. Great walks close to hotel too. Staff friendly and room quiet. Only let down was the old mattress in desperate need of renewal!

    « Very nice »

Stayed here for one night just before Christmas. Our executive room was large, characterful and clean. Would definitely stay there again. Few minor grumbles. Much of the car park was waterlooged. I suspect from the design of the hotel and landscaping that this is a frequent issue. The lift needed a deep clean - the stainless steel walls were coverered with smears and handmarks. The large planter in the bay window had 4 bottle tops in it. This should have been seen by cleaning staff. However these are issues that would not stop me returning here in the future.

« Stayed here for two nights whilst visiting family over Christmas. »

We got an upgrade to an Executive suite and and were very pleased with the room, which was very comfortable. We ate at the Poacher's Inn next door and the meal was OK but a bit pricey. Getting there was a bit tricky over a narrow bridge. Breakfast was very good and filling. The lounge area was spacious and relaxing to sit and have a drink and the staff in general were very helpful.

Staff are super nice and that's about the only good thing here. Rooms are clean but small, food other than breakfast is very poor and 2x as expensive as anywhere else. Ham sandwich is $15 and that's two slices of lunch meat in a hoagie, no pickle lettuce or tomato. Sure I could go on about the food but it's a downward spiral from there. The hotel has a pathetic work out space, the restaurant and pub are great on the other hand. Oddly they have the same thing in common, empty at most times. Ever walk into a charming place with old world look but then think, why am I the only one here? Figure the local residents are aware this is a place to avoid. If you are on foot you are stuck as there is no foot path south of the hotel and walking the other direction it will be 1.5 miles to the nearest store. Other hotels are in a better location adjacent to historic areas or food good enough that warrants locals to visit even though they are not staying at the hotel. Lastly, on the cost side this place is overpriced. No minifridge, vending machines with a broken cooler that serves warm drinks, small room for the money.

    « Stunning hotel. »

Stayed here 2 nights on a good deal through Superbreak. 2 nights B&B and money towards dinner on first night. We were attending a wedding in Wokingham a short drive/taxi ride away. Lovely hotel, very spacious and lots of areas to sit downstairs . Had dinner in the attached pub on first night. The room was large and well equipped. A very comfy bed, very warm, as most hotels are. Breakfast on both mornings was brilliant. Loads of choice so something for everyone. The staff were helpful and obliging. Would definitely stay here again.

Lovely hotel, would certainly stay again?.. only problem we found was that the car park was very muddy with no tarmac, hence the car baggage and our footwear got covered to and from the hotel !! Otherwise great stay in a very nice setting by the river. Very handy place to stay if visiting the Nirvana spa which is only 2 minutes away by car??..

    « Sunday lunch »

We went to the Moat House for Sunday lunch. The staff were very helpful, the pianist was lovely & played some tunes for our two little ones, the food was enjoyable, but the service was so slow. In total there were only 21 people in the restaurant, so why did it take two hours to have Sunday lunch. Our two little grandchildren were fed up after a short time.

    « Needs Renovation Badly! »

Rust in the bath, mould on curtains in bedroom, around window and on shower curtain. Black midew on shower head. Generally feels old, rundown and in need of a deep clean. Coffee at breakfast is shockingly bad - rest of the food is very average!

« Not much to look at on the outside, but impressive on the inside. Like a big pie. »

Stayed for a night early December due to a local event. The postcode given by the website was not entirely accurate- although this may be down to the Google maps app on my phone..... Not really the best roads around it- little bridges and single file traffic, but easy enough once you know where you're going A vast car park, although not fun when wet- quite chalk-like in places. Tarmac would be a nice touch. Potentially quite a walk to the reception as well if you have to park in the corner. I didn't though, because I'm smart like a fox. Once inside, the lobby area was very impressive and extremely shiny- like a snowglobe- very polite staff and a very straight forward check in. The room was immaculate, although the horizontal oak style beam across the ceiling was lower at one end, causing me to bump my little round head. A vertical pillar supporting the beam left very little space between the wall and the bed. Had I of pulled a big girl, it's unlikely she would have fit down that side of the bed. For reasons I didn't care enough to ask about, my room was upgraded to a business suite. As far as I could see, that gave me a desk. I didn't use the desk. Both room and bathroom were well laid out and impeccably clean. The fact that the television remote control was not screwed shut is a reflection on the kind of place it is. I did not steal the batteries, despite the ease of opportunity There was a mini bar which was left alone, but a nice touch all the same. The full length mirror on the inside of the wardrobe door wasnt much use though, as the door would not open fully, due it hitting the closer on the main door to the room. Couldn't stand up straight in the shower either. Not through laziness or spite, just slightly low ceiling in the bathroom. The bar was closed due to a private function, so we went for a drink at the Poachers Inn next door, which meant having to walk a short but slightly scary distance across a bridge with no pavement. I certainly wouldn't have fancied the walk after alcohol. Decent enough breakfast next morning, although they ran out of pastries which is always disappointing. Perhaps I shouldn't have eaten so many. I'd happily stay again.

    « Worst hotel in a while »

The staff have an attitude, the actual room is nice but service in the restaurant is diabolical. 3/4 four nights food either came out cold or after two hours, after a complaint staff didn't seem to care and we seemed to be an inconvenience. AVOID AT ALL COSTS

    2
« Check in late, no bar/lounge etc »

Check in was supposed to be 2pm, I couldn't get in our room until 3.10pm. The restaurant was closed for a party but we were not allowed to use the bar/lounge either and were told to either go to the pub or pay extra for room service. Not able to access the pub due to someone being disabled and really cross at being asked to pay extra when it wasn't our fault.

« First class in many respects....book without hesitation. »

Stayed four nights here with my wife whilst visiting nearby friends. Hotel very accessible from Heathrow in particular, stacks of parking, nice setting, lovely foyer. Reception staff excellent, rooms clean and fresh, excellent bedding, could the rooms/ bathrooms be slightly cleaner yes but they are very good, don't let other reports put you off; any issues we spotted were more down to customers treating the place in a fashion we presume they would not do in their own homes. It is a touch noisy (traffic noise) if you sleep with the windows open but that's the price you pay for accessibility....just a humming from the motorway in the distance. Good bar service, meals can be taken in your room, in the bar or in an attached pub ( short outside walk required ). Some great staff working here.....doing their best...breakfast buffet very good, fruit, cereals, cooked....hard to fault at this price bracket. We had one or two teething problems which were resolved admirably by the staff and the hotel manager.....thank you Stephen. We will be back.....if you do go here.....please appreciate it !!!!!!

    « Leisure stay »

This hotel is in an excellent location if you are visiting the nearby Nirvana spa or Windsor. Staff are friendly, welcoming and the rooms are clean and comfortable. On this occasion we stayed in the executive suite which was very good value for money. The only downside is approx. £15 for breakfast.

    « Overnight stay for 11 - Family 60th Party »

Stayed here overnight on the 28th November 2015. Car park is very big so loads of room. They even offered us the staff car park as the other parts were a bit muddy! ?? Check in was easy and efficient. We had executive rooms on the other side of the hotel which were very nice! The rooms are very cosy and clean however one down side would be the executive rooms on the first floor have very low ceilings so not advisable if you're over 5 foot 10! Other floors have higher ceilings so are better I that respect. The bathroom was clean with a shower and heated towel rail which was a nice touch! Room itself was spotless with a big flat screen tele. The bed was comfortable and had a lovely view of the river from the windows. Breakfast was included which was a buffet of normal breakfast foods, (Egg,sausage, bacon etc)fresh fruit, tea, coffee, fruit juice etc. Overall, a brilliant stay at this hotel and would definitely visit again!

A fantastic venue for parties. Flexible, helpful & friendly. The standard of food, service and accommodation are all great! The event was simple to organise thanks to the superior service offered by the Conference & Events Sales Supervisor. They made an important occasion one to remember for many years to come!

    « Christmas Lunch »

Today I had the misfortune to have a Christmas Lunch here. We were a large party of about 36. First we had to queue for about 10 mins to get served at the bar. Lunch , many people were left waiting for their starter of pate, so no cooking involved. The main course was awful with barely cooked root vegetables of carrots and parsnip (very cheap) we also had sprouts, that was it with turkey and 3/4 small potatoes. No brocolli or cauliflower or any thing decent. This wss supposed to have all the trimmings? Alas no stuffing or bread sauce. A child could have done better. A complete waist of money thank got i had my friends with me to make the time more enjoyable.

    « Very good »

We are members of the Best Western loyalty programme and do like the quality of their hotels even though they are actually individually owned. When we arrived at the Moat House for a 2 night stay we were greeted by a very good trainee receptionist, Nigel. He booked us in no problem efficiently and with no sign of being a trainee. After an excellent day at Royal Ascot, we all had super meals including perfectly cooked to order sirloin steaks with chips, vegetables and salad. This is a quality hotel in a lovely location, easy to get to, plenty of parking, good food, not cheap but worth every penny. We were not disappointed and will not hesitate to stay again. Thank you Best Western.

« for comfort and quality, stay here »

Good food, clean and comfortable rooms, exceptionally friendly staff, beautiful and peaceful surroundings and WIFI - what more could you ask for - and very good value too, this hotel appeals to all comers. They've got it just right (but don't tell anybody or they'll all want to come)

    « Great stay! »

Stayed as a family of three with our 20 month old son. Check in was very efficient with staff explaining breakfast, parking, room location etc. Reception was decorated for Christmas with a large lovely decorated tree which our son loved! We were on the ground floor and the room was a good size and very clean. Breakfast was included in our stay - plenty of choice! It's a buffet style breakfast and there was a choice of; full English, continental, cereals and pastries. Everything tasted very fresh. Was a bit worried about the reviews I had read on the parking but was nothing to worry about. Most of the parking is on compacted grass and it does look a bit muddy but we found it fine. Would definitely stay again!

A totally enjoyable experience, good service, clean tidy rooms. A relaxing overnight business stay. A short drive to shops for the ladies, ideal location for business meetings or onward travel. I have stay here before and would stay again. There are leisure facilities onsite but not tried out on this visit.

« Great hotel for work. »

I was dubious about staying here after hearing poor reports from work colleagues who stayed here a week ago, but other than agreeing with them that the bathroom needed a steam clean my stay was very enjoyable. All the staff from the receptionists to cleaners were professional and friendly, and the outside of the hotel, foyer, restaurant and my bedroom were spotlessly clean. Ate in Poachers bar next door to the hotel two nights and the food was excellent, as was the very friendly service, my only complaint being the very dangerous walk to it - competing with traffic to get over the bridge! It wasn't until the second night we came across the reflective vests but even so, and does anyone actually wear them? perhaps making another route would be safer. The restaurant food on the third night was also excellent. The restaurant and bar area in the hotel has comfortable seating and the bar staff were polite and attentive. My bedroom was spacious and had everything I needed, bed extremely comfortable, bed clothes pristine and it was serviced each day. Breakfast each morning was delicious, a great selection, again served in comfortable surroundings, and everything was easily accessible. In my view, this is a really great hotel.

« Great location for work »

I stayed here for 4 nights with work, with free on-site parking and pub attached, there was no need to look elsewhere for food on a night. Great menu, and had the sports on which was great. After a hard days work it took 5 minutes to get here, and was very relaxing.

« tribute dinner night. gary barlow »

attended the Tribute night last friday was brilliant. I was part of a party of ten. It was one of the best night we had. I personally was in two minds about this. I have seen half a dozen Take that tributes and gary barlow tributes. Because im a big GB fan i knew i would be over critical. However this chap Bootleg Gary or Bootleg Barlow was outstanding. He worked the odd shapped room including everyone. The poor bloke looked boiling as the room temp was a little high. Must of been all the energy we created!! The DJ was also good and worked well with the tribute before and after. Also need to add the food was good. What a smashing night x

« Gary Barlow Tribute night with dinner »

We went to this event Friday evening and had a GREAT time. We were greeted in reception by a lovely bubbly lady who informed me that the rest of our group had arrived and was in the lounge bar. After a drink in bar we were shown to our dinner table where our pre-ordered wine was chilling nicely in the cooler on our table. Our food came out and it was delicious. Then the tribute started and was really good, we had a good sing a long! The night ended with a disco which finished the evening of nicely. It was great value for money and I will defiantly be coming to another event.

Very good hotel, staff are very efficient and friendly. The room was clean spacious and had everything you needed for a comfortable stay. Check in was fast and friendly and the Bar staff made you feel very welcome. I can recommend this hotel, the only slight problem was that the room was a bit warm for me but that may have been me rather than the room

I needed a room for myself and two sons, aged 13 and 10 for an overnight stay and found just what I needed at this hotel. It was good value and we all had a bed each. It was very family friendly and I didn't have to pay for breakfast for my 10 year old.

good quality hotel 40mins drive into London, excellant breakfast and restaurant menu at evening, comfortable lounge area in bar and ample seating in restaurant, good clean rooms with a comfortable bed, stayed here 3 occasions in last 12 months never been disatified, friendly staff , easy check in check out, only let down is the car park, only room for 6 cars near the entrance rest is on open ground which gets quite muddy when it rains

    « Relaxing and quiet »

I was looking for a hotel in walking distance to the Nirvana Spa, yes it is, but you wouldn't walk it. The distance is less than a mile, however the road is dark, winding and fast. I tried to organise a last minute spa break, incorporating, in my opinion, the best Spa for all ages. The hotel provided a great base, quiet, relaxing and where available, free upgrade to the next room type for best western members. I have booked two nights, will try dinner later. Anyone who is able to book in advance, the hotel do offer a leisure break in conjunction with the Nirvana Spa - I will definitely take advantage of this next time. Nice breakfast, buffet and able to cook eggs to demand

    « Not a 4 star plus. »

I stayed here for a week and to be honest I have stayed in better 3 star hotels. I am at a loss where the 'plus' comes from, or indeed the 4th star. There were bits missed on the cleaning which would seem petty if I was in a 3 star hotel, but this is a 4 star 'plus' hotel so I would have expected better detailing. I had to ask more than once to have broken equipment repaired, and the receptionist was very condesending. At checkout when I was invited to comment, a different receptionist said he was going to pray for me. Whats that all about? The hotel is a long way from anywhere so you need a car or expect to pay £15 each way for a taxi to Reading.

« Great room, lovely staff »

Not the hotel I usually stay at when in Reading so I was a bit unsure what I was getting but I was very impressed. I was warmly welcomed upon arrival and given the suprising news that I been upgraded to a junior suite. I will be honest, at this point I wasn't expecting much, but once I arrived at the room......wow what a great room! Very happy! Lovely big room with sofa, huge bed etc, massive bathroom with bath and seperate shower, mini bar.....very nice. I decided as it was getting late to order room service. Again staff very polite and food was prompt and really rather good. The lady who arrived with the food was lovely. A drink had been forgotten which I wasn't to worried about but she soon came back saying sorry for the mistake. Now I have just come back from a week a Tripadvisor's top rated 5* Cancun hotel and the serviced I got was not far behind! Very impressed. Two small niggles.... 1/ On leaving and checking out, why are you not automatically told you need a token to get out the car park? I saw a lot of people coming back to reception! 2/ Housekeeping....I had the previous guests items still in the shower and the bedside table left sticky with drinks marks. As I say, very small issues, but If I had payed full price for the suite I'm sure I would have been a bit annoyed!

    « Unusual accomodation »

This is an interesting place to stay. It's a very old building presumably a Moat House which has a stream running through it. The rooms have very low ceilings so you need to watch not to bump your head. There is a very old pub next door which is handy for a drink of the local brew. Meals are reasonably priced and of reasonable quality. The staff were exceptionally helpful especially the reception staff.

    « pleasant stay »

We stayed for two nights on a bed breakfast and one evening meal basis. The hotel was really well placed for the m4 and surrounding areas . The rooms were warm, comfortable and spotlessly clean. We ate in the restaurant on Friday night. The head waiter is clearly a hard working gentleman who is striving to do his best for guests and his employers. However, we sat watching him and were worried that his basil fawltey approach would result in him having a heart attack. Delightful man who needs to chill a little and not shout accross the room. We had a great meal and had no complaints at all, we would reccommend you have a meal there. Breakfast was delicious lots of choice beautifully cooked. The adjoining pub was great drinks were more reasonably priced, just be careful on the road as the cars wizz past. Ladies on reception were helpful and happy. yes we would return and reccommend it to others.

« Nice hotel awful restaurant »

This is a lovely hotel luxurious room but the restaurant is awful we went for dinner on Friday night and has to wait 45mins for the food! Their is also a male waiter who was very loud and kept walking past our table shouting to other guests if they would like the bill or another drink etc. The restaurant was quiet and this man was ridiculously loud on top of that it cost a fortune was definitely not worth the money we paid. We then ordered room service which took 50 mins to arrive and it was stone cold. We wanted to pay by card so the man who brought our coffee up took our card to go and the card machine so we could pay, after a hour of having our card he then rung and said I need to go down stairs to pay which really annoyed us as that defeats the object of room service, after 15 mins he rung again and said not to worry he will bring our debit card back to us. He didn't. After a hour and half I rung and said I want my card back then someone instantly brought it back to us. They should not have taken our card in the first place he should have brought the card machine to our room so we could pay not happy at all.

« super friendly staff, more luxurious thank it looks, great for business »

we had a two day work meeting here and used the meeting room facilities. Reception was a bit confused about how many meeting rooms we had booked and also told us we had paid for dinner. We hadn't paid for dinner, but possibly this was added to our package by the hotel. Anyhow, we didn't know and had booked dinner elsewhere. We must have received an upgrade that we hadn't been charged for, as all of us had executive rooms on the same floor. The rooms were really nice, they were very pretty indeed with beams and all. I had a view from my window on the mill, this building used to be a mill, is surrounded by water and very pretty. Funny thing is, it's just off the motorway, very easy to reach, but then a sort of oasis, very very pretty indeed. The rooms were luxurious, there were coffee and tea making facilities with biscuits and all sorts of things one could need in a hotel. The meeting room was very nice. It had a big glass door with a view outside, which is great if you're in a meeting all day. Outside the room there were coffee machines for us to use without any limitations, this was also great. Everyone really liked the snacks that were made available and paper cones to put them in. Popcorn, sweets, people del like at the cinema and got really excited about it. The gentleman responsible for us and the meeting room introduced himself, he was cold Luca. He was extremely friendly and felt really responsible. I learnt that we had asked for an early check in, which the hotel had kindly arranged. That way we could all change our clothes in our rooms before our meeting started, as we had been in the mud in the morning. Luca had been worried we hadn't arrived and felt responsible for making us at ease and helping us out with anything we needed. He was so friendly and showed how to use the meeting room, there were dimming lights, temperature control etc. The projector worked well. Frankly the internet connection wasn't very strong. There was also a lobby where a few of us met and other stayed in the restaurant that was used for breakfast, lunch and dinner and also served as a bar. It had a nice atmosphere. We slept well, it was quiet, very quiet. I also liked I could open my window. Breakfast: a very friendly manager, quite tall with a loud voice, don't know his name. He made us feel very welcome. Truth be told, I wasn't fond of the coffee machine coffee. Breakfast however was okay, there was enough choice, cooked as well as continental. The quality was not special. But the personalised approach of the staff made up for that absolutely. Not a corporate hotel, but very friendly, felt more like a family hotel. Lunch was very nice on both days with plenty of choice, not just sandwiches but also pasta and salads and some hot pots with chili and some nice puddings. No extra charges or surprises at the end. We discussed and were so pleasantly surprised with the hotel. It was an excellent choice for our meeting and I will go out of my way to try and come back. They definitely deserve the business!

« You will most probably regret staying here »

I certainly did regret booking this hotel for a one night stay. There was only one plus and that is because we arrived at about 1 am we only had to be in the room for 7 hours! We checked in and straight away had to pay for the room that's not normally how it works in a hotel is it? A bit strange but OK the Best Western want your money first. We were given our room card and in we went and my heart actually missed a beat someone was already in our room and gosh did it make me jump. Back we went to reception and the late night receptionist found this amusing, not at all apologetic. It was quite funny I suppose. Anyway we were given another room and assured no one else would be in the room but I did knock this time before gingerly entering. We were tired by this time having been to Twickenham to watch England disappointingly loose to Wales. Sleep was needed, Oh dear what had happened to the mattress on the double bed it dipped badly in the middle. I was at a higher level to my partner who was stuck in the dip. To make things worse the pillows were like house bricks. Along with the constant drone of the M4 ( I had to slightly open the window due to musty smell in the room) sleep was hard to come by. I was pleased when morning came although very weary and looked forward to departing. There was no way I wanted to risk a breakfast at £14.95. This is a scruffy, poorly maintained poor excuse for a hotel. Stay anywhere but here.
