"Lovely staff"

4
18/09/2018

I have been staying at this hotel on and off for a few weeks and the staff are always so friendly and helpful, and the hotel has a nice atmosphere. The rooms are always clean and tidy (although some of them are a little dated and could do with a revamp). The breakfast selection is good - both continental and cooked, and the staff always ask if you would like tea/coffee and toast. The restaurant food is generally good but sometimes varies (I guess depending on what chef is working). Sometimes the food comes out extremely quickly so I wonder how fresh it is. There is a bar in the restaurant and a nice outside space to sit. Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel.

"Ideal location and great breakfast"

I have enjoyed my stay at BW reading Calcot, affordable price, great value. A lot of parking space available and close of the main roads and touristic locations. The hotel and the rooms are clean. The restaurant offers great food and an enormous breakfast choices, and it was yummy. I'll stay there again to my next visit in Reading.

"Not the best night's sleep...."

01/09/2018

Recently stayed for a night whilst in the local area for a wedding. The room was very old fashioned and in need of some tlc. The bed was very uncomfortable and the springs dug into your back when trying to sleep. Sadly I didn't get much sleep. The breakfast was decent and service was friendly. I don't think I'd stay here again as it wasn't that relaxing or comfortable.

Stayed in single room 15. Really not worth £98. Tiny and old fashioned. Dangerous step down into room and up into bathroom . Stumbled several times and fell into the room and skinned my knees forgetting step was there. Noisy generator or similar if I opened the window . Suggest you refuse this room if offered. On the plus side after being disappointed with restaurant menu the food well well cooked and delicious . Breakfast also had loads of fresh fruit and hot buffet choices

"Overpriced small basic room which was dirty in places and unbearably hot"

06/08/2018

Dirty bathroom including black mold. Whilst appreciate warm weather bedroom was unbearably hot. Tiny fan but only two plugs furthest point from bed so had to choose to charge mobile or have tiny desk fan on. Did not feel the state of the room was anywhere near represented in the £75 room only price so set alarm for 7 am and left.

"1 night stay "

06/08/2018

Lovely hotel, with a lovely warm welcome from reception. Room big enough and very quiet even though the hotel is located by a main road! Breakfast was absolutely lovely in the morning with a wide range of selection and the waiting staff in the restaurant (especially Sue) couldn't do enough for us! If we ever come to reading again we would definitely book this hotel again.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
What a fantastic review - thank you so much! We are thrilled to learn that your stay was such a success and you are now a fan. We hope to welcome you back plenty of times in 2018!

"Wished I could have stayed more than one night."

06/08/2018

Stayed here for one night as a B&B and it was well worth it. The breakfast was wonderful and there was a large selection to suit all needs. There was a mix of full English and continental items as part of a buffet. Both sections were separated which was a nice touch. The staff were warm and welcoming and offered tea, coffee and toast to the table. The room itself was clean and well appointed. We stayed when it was very hot and there was a fan already provided for us. The bathroom door did graze the end of the bed and the bathroom light switch was hard to find. I could hear no noise from the road and considering the heat, we both slept well. The location is great on the outside of the city and there is a supermarket and other shops nearby.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Great to hear you enjoyed your visit with us and thank you for taking the time to share the love. Good to know you plan to return and we look forward to welcoming you again soon!

"Great deal if you book/pay early and get the breakfast for free."

We stayed here last Thursday for under £60 for B+B for 2, a bargain. We were travelling from Norfolk to Southampton and have never stayed in Reading before so took a detour. Finding the hotel is nice and easy, just a few minutes from the M4. Spacious Car park (or maybe it was just not a busy night) We were in room 8 (a Twin), views not inspiring, over the kitchens I think, flat roof and extractor fans. BUT it's a very cheap room!! Hairdryer did not work in the shower room, but was able to use one in another room. Shower room compact, but clean. Beds were comfortable, room was hot due to it being one of the hottest days of the year so far. Breakfast, greeted and shown to our table by Sue. Tea/Coffee and toast brought out within a couple of minutes. Chairs very comfortable, all food was good, whether from the cold buffet or the freshly cooked Hot buffet. Overall a good stay, better value than a stay I had 2 weeks earlier in a B+B in Crawley

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Great to hear you enjoyed your visit with us and thank you for taking the time to share your experience. So pleased that the team looked after you so well and will be sure to pass on your feedback to Sue - she'll be thrilled. Hope we get to see you again very soon!

23/07/2018

Stayed here for one night our rooms were nice and very clean but exceptionally hot a fan was supplied but didn't really make much difference. We went for our evening meal and menu was in our room for us to see there were some great choices but on arrival at restaurant nearly ever item on the menu was not available which left us not much choice very disappointing. We then ordered deserts which we waited over an hour for ,if we hadn't of been staying here we would of just left . Breakfast was a lot better and all staff had been really nice but don't think we will be returning

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. We are pleased overall you enjoyed your stay with us but do sincerely apologise for the poor levels of service you experienced for dinner we have taken decisive steps to resolve the matter and unfortunately have now parted company with the parties concerned. I do hope you will reconsider returning to the hotel whereby we can illustrate our normally high levels of service. .

I would recommend this hotel highly from the minute I walked into the hotel the staff were very friendly and helpful. I had to book some of the nights I stayed there separately and knew before going that I would have to move rooms as it is a busy hotel this was hardly any trouble at all as the housekeeping staff moved my belongings from room to room, the cleanliness of the hotel was excellent and the food in the restaurant to a high standard and the staff very accommodating and attentive. It is a little out of the centre of town but it is easy to get into town as there is a bus stop just a few feet from the hotel and a day ticket only cost £4.00 for an adult were as a taxi into town cost in the region of £20.00

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
What a fantastic review - thank you so much! We are thrilled to learn that your stay was such a success and you are now a fan. We hope to welcome you back plenty of times in 2018!

"Great room, bad food"

5
11/07/2018

This was a really good experience. Rooms are large and clean, with really comfortable beds, and on a very hot night the fan worked very well. Nice clean and large bathrooms. Staff both efficient and pleasant. Would definitely stay there again. Excellent for three stars. On the downside, no lift or assistance with luggage which was awkward having just had an operation, and the restaurant food was poor. Not all TV channels worked. Location functional if uninspiring. No fridge in room.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to complete your review following your stay with us. I am glad you enjoyed your stay with us overall but saddened to learn of the issues you had experienced. We'll be sure to set that sorted! We hope we will get the opportunity to welcome you back soon.

"Wouldn't advise eating"

2
09/07/2018

Checked in today and here for the next few nights. I've been working away and stayed in a few local other hotels. From the moment I checked in I didn't feel like a guest but someone who has walked in from the street asking for money. Arrived at my room to find one hand towel no bath towels. 4 out of 6 of us ate in the on site restaurant and all of us were extremely disappointed with the service and quality of food. The brioche beef burger was incorrectly advertised. The side salad was all dry and wilted. The chips and onion rings were cold. Asked for a few condiments, sat waiting for them to arrive to notice the table service were cleaning up on nothing table. After 10 minutes they came. At the end of the meal, we all expressed how we felt about the food we had received, not even a sorry from the staff. They didn't look interested in the slightest. So far my stay has been terrible and wouldn't advise anybody to stay here if a first impression and on site food is important

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Great to talk with you all this evening. I am glad we were able to resolve things and hope you'll give us a second chance later this week and that you are able to get back tomorrow without missing too much of the game!

"Clean, comfortable and convenient."

09/07/2018

Good location. Very close to the M4. Easy access to visit Englefield House. Pleasantly surprised when we arrive. The reception staff were very friendly and checking went smoothly. The layout of this hotel is very nice. Lovely sunny gardens to the front. Rooms are adequate. Maybe a little dated but very clean and presentable. Everything is supplied in the room. Iron & Board. Tea/Coffee facilities. Shower/Hand wash. Alas only a table top fan (no aircon) but it didn't hamper out stay. We will stay here again. They have events throughout the year so may attend one of those and stay over again.

"Good venue for informal Dinner & Dance"

4
18/06/2018

I was involved in organising a Dinner Dance for 60 plus people and chose the Calcot Hotel. We based our decision on location, size of function room available, parking availability and value for money for the meal. The staff served a good three course meal for 60 plus people and it was delivered on time, well cooked and nicely presented. The hotel staff were very helpful allowing us set up the room early, assisting with equipment etc. The DJ came free as part of the arrangement. His choice of music suited those attending very well and a good time was had by all.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review Josephine it is always a pleasure to welcome you all back. So pleased you had another great evening with us. Look forward to seeing you again soon!

"Reading visit"

18/06/2018

Nice quiet hotel just off M4, good access all round. Excellent breakfast and friendly bar. 3,5 mile out of town but a nice stroll along the main road past parks and a golf course. Good bus connections with £4 for an all day pass

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for your review and the great feedback; the breakfast is pretty awesome! Hope we will get to see you again very soon!

"Good friendly hotel"

4
17/06/2018

A great location for visiting Englefield House, checking in was a bit slow due to a wedding party, it a warm friendly welcome. Rooms standard but very adequate for the price. We didn't have breakfast but did enjoy a evening meal in the restaurant

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
So pleased to learn you had a great stay after the slow start. We'll be sure to pass on your feedback to our team and look forward to hopefully welcoming you back again soon!

"An okay stay."

3
10/06/2018

Location is good and the hotel is easy to find. From outside, the hotel looks appealing and welcoming. Staff are polite, however bar is expensive and breakfast was cold. Rooms are okay, some have shower cubicle others have over shower bath which is not ideal for accessibility. Decor is dated but bed was comfortable, reasonable size TV and fan. Have stayed here twice but will look for somewhere else to stay next time I visit Reading.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to complete a review. I can see whilst you enjoyed your stay with us there were a couple of areas that were not as you expected. Certainly thanks for the feedback re breakfast we'll be sure to get that sorted. We are going through a process of refurbishing our rooms as soon as practicable. Do hope you will reconsider staying with us again in the future.

"Pleasant Visit, although a little disappointing!"

3
06/06/2018

Stayed here for one night and the room was very clean, ample for the one night and we were very comfortable. We met two members of staff, the lovely lady on reception was very nice and gave us a free upgrade. When we arrived we were hungry and decided to take advantage of the Sunday Carvery. The prawn cocktail starter was very very disappointing to say the least, a few frozen prawns and a bit of bread! The main was ok, potatoes so hard you couldnt chew them without losing your teeth! Meat was nice though! We didnt stay for the desert as we were off to a party nearby but the lovely lady who served us offered for us to have one later when we returned! I couldnt fault the staff we met, they made up for the £17 per head carvery which I was not happy with to be honest. I would of paid £9.99 for that! Would not recommend for food but the hotel is clean and comfortable and the staff lovely!

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your review. We're pleased you liked our rooms, the location and of course the friendly team. Thank you for your feedback about the food, we'll be sure to get that sorted! We very much look forward to welcoming you back, soon!

"Chose it because of the location"

4
04/06/2018

I've read some of the negative reviews on here. Some are uncalled for. On entering our room which was at the back so it was very quiet it did smell a bit musty. That was cured immediately by leaving the windows open. The bed was very comfy. T.v. was a bit dated regarding the channels. It needs re-tuning. All four of us ate in the restaurant both nights and had breakfast there as well. No compaints whatsoever. Lovely food. Well presented and delightful tasty. Nice to sit outside the front of the hotel even though the road is very close and can be noisy but it really didn't affect us. The staff were very pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. A good value hotel in a good location.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for your great review. We love seeing that you had a good time, liked the location, the restaurant and of course the food. We very much look forward to welcoming you back, soon!

"Most Pleasant Visit"

01/06/2018

My wife and I, our daughter and grandson (10 months) stayed here for two nights while my daughter was on a course nearby. I have to praise and compliment all the staff for their helpfulness and friendliness. It felt as if we knew them personally. A rare commodity these days. Hotels are not just about buildings they are about people and service and this one was first class. One of the most friendly hotels we have stayed at. Compliments to all the staff you do a great job - well done. Highly recommended!

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
WOW what a fantastic review, thank you so very much for taking the time to do so. I will certainly pass on your feedback to our team who will be thrilled to see your comments. We hope we will have the opportunity to look after you again soon!

30/05/2018

The hotel is lovely, i have been in hotels every week for a month and this has been the best sleep I have had in a long time! The room is quite and was spotless with super comfy beds. Free parking is also a bonus, check in was quite and Rose was really nice.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
WOW; we're blushing! Thanks for your great review I'll be sure to pass on your feedback to the team especially Rose. Thanks again.

"3 night visit to Reading."

4
29/05/2018

Nice Hotel, clean rooms, comfy beds, pleasant helpful staff, good breakfasts. The main con for me, was the pitifully small bathroom. It was more like a walk in wardrobe, and as I am just over six feet tall, I was constantly banging my elbows, arms etc into the sides of the wall, shower, sink and had to do the twist followed by a limbo dance each morning after a shower in order to dry myself, and the toilet was located under the sloping eaves, which being tall presented me with another problem! It was rather hot (mid 20's c) over the duration of our stay, and each evening when we returned to the room it was like an oven, there is no air conditioning whatsoever in the rooms, not even ceiling fans, and as the windows opened out onto a fire escape you daren't leave them open all day, as that would invite trouble! Our room was located upstairs (15 stairs in all) which didn't present us with any problems, however I recommend that the the less mobile should request a ground floor as there didn't appear to be any lifts. We enjoyed our stay, it was handy for the place we needed to get to each day, and we will probably stay here again if need be, but will be sure to request a room with a normal sized (if they have such a thing!) bathroom.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Ian Thank you for your review I am so pleased to learn that you had enjoyed your stay overall with us but saddened to hear about your discomfort in the room hue to size. The main busilding was built in the 1900's and therefore does have some anomilies when it comes to size however we do have alternatives available which woudld suite you better. Please do let us know when you are in the area again and we'll be sure to allocate a more suitable room for you. Thanks again for your review.

"Not up to BW normal standards"

2
27/05/2018

Non engaging staff. overcooked dinner in restaurant, nothing done on complaint. Noise from adjoining room. The staff need to get some guest care skill. The BW staff in Nottingham could teach them a thin or two!

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Paul, I'm so sorry to hear that we didn't meet your requirements for your trip. I would love to speak to you about this further so please feel free to reach out to me directly at [email protected] I look forward to hearing from you.

"Great find!"

4
21/05/2018

Stayed here for 2 nights on business. Staff are very friendly & welcoming. Room was of a good size, bathroom small but you don't need a huge one if you are on your own. Shower did take ages for the hot water to come through so let it run for a bit before getting in! Food was lovely in the restaurant both for breakfast and dinner. Will definitely stay here again if in the area.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for staying with us at Calcot Hotel, great to hear that nearly everything was spot on. Thanks for letting us know about the hot water - we'll be sure to get that sorted. Come back and stay again soon!

"Exceeded expectations"

5
14/05/2018

Attended a formal dinner dance on Saturday. Having driving past many times I wasn't expecting much bit just goes to show how appearances can be deceptive. Lacks the wow factor of some places but was great. A really nice venue with friendly and efficient staff. Food was plentiful and excellent. Wonderful roast potatoes. Would recommend for an event.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Brilliant to hear you loved your stay with us and had a great evening we'll be sure to pass on your feedback to our team. Hope to see you back soon!

"A five-star stay in a 3-star hotel"

5
14/05/2018

Stayed for a few days in this hotel and it was a very pleasant surprise. The whole personnel was kind and helpful, showing a politeness and friendliness that I rarely encountered in my trips. The garden landscape was exquisite, highlighted even more by the sunny weather. The bar offered plenty of choices and some of the dishes served in the restaurant were incredible. There is a shopping center nearby (about 15 minute by foot), offering pretty much everything that you might need in a trip (Sainsbury's, Sports Direct, Boots, Next). On the downside, the hotel is placed pretty far from the city of Reading (about 4 miles), but there are bus lines easily accessible. All in all, a very good experience, especially if you want to disconnect a bit from the rush of a life in a big city. I will return with pleasure anytime that my business brings me in the area again.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
What a fantastic review - thank you so much! We are thrilled to learn that your stay was such a success and you are a fan. We hope to welcome you back plenty of times in 2018!

"No more honey :("

A frequent address I come to, always a pleasant stay and always look to the favorite part of my stay..the breakfast, but today to my surprise I could not find any honey! hope the honeycomb will be back soon :)

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for staying with us again and for taking the time to leave a review. We are super happy that you enjoyed your stay, I'm sorry but I'm afraid we are no longer able to obtain the honeycomb but we do hope you will enjoy our new selections as we are changing things up in our breakfast offer. We hope to see you back soon!

"Disappointing "

29/04/2018

Stayed overnight for work. Evening meal was awful , starters had brown salad , the tart was runny, rolls rock hard. Many people didn't eat their meal. My bedroom was very old fashioned , old bathroom some people had a newer room with a nice shower however mine was very old. Breakfast was better than the evening meal. The staff were very friendly however . I personally would never want to stay here again

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review your stay though I am so sorry it wasn't the experience you were hoping for. We'd love to hear more about what went wrong and how we can improve this. Please contact me at [email protected] Thank you.

"Sunday Carvery."

5
23/04/2018

Enjoyed an excellent meal with my wife at their Sunday Carvery yesterday. A 'proper' restaurant with table cloths. A few well-behaved children were there - but a relaxing environment with little noise. A place where obviously middle-aged children take their elderly parents for a Sunday Meal. Food was of a high standard, as were the Toilets. Be careful as you draw into their large Car Park. It is off a very busy A4 and I recommend you always turn left into the Car Park and not try to cut across the traffic as I did. (Go slightly further on to a roundabout and then approach the turning on the correct side.)

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
WOW you're really making us blush! So pleased you had a great time here on Sunday. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

"Adequate"

3
16/04/2018

Stayed on Sunday night after a great day with family. Decided to eat in the hotel - checked out the room service menu, which was adequate but basic, so went down to the restaurant to see what was on the menu and was very surprised to see the same limited offering. It may be that it was because it was Sunday but a very poor choice. Ate in the room, was okay but nothing to write home about. Similarly, the room was okay but nothing special. In all, adequate.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for sharing the feedback following your stay, though we're very sorry to hear your stay wasn't as good as you expected. That's such a shame and we really don't like the idea of you being unhappy. We are going through a time of change here at the hotel reviewing all our menus and upgrading our rooms.. Please email [email protected] so we can make it up to you.

"Disappointing"

2
16/04/2018

Visited for Sunday lunch yesterday. My disappointing verdict was in relation to the starters and desserts, particularly the desserts. I expected better from a hotel. My crumble and custard resembled (and tasted) like a school dinner pudding. No presentation and in fact I could hardly see the crumble for the custard it was drowning in. Other members of my party had lemon meringue pie. Again, dumped on a plate with no real presentation. No offer of cream to accompany? Starters were very basic and not exciting at all. The carvery was good though! Could people not opt for just the carvery perhaps rather than school dinner/meals on wheels type of starters and desserts? That would be better. Service was slow. The young staff on duty didn't really seem to know what they were doing! Then the manager had a bit of an argument with the chef which livened it up a bit!

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review your visit though I am so sorry it wasn't the experience you were hoping for. I know that we are already in contact so look forward to discussing your visit with you personally when you're free.

"Overnight stay "

16/04/2018

4 Star treatment, with only a 3 star rating. Reception staff were extremely, friendly, the bed was extremely comfortable, facilities excellent, breakfast was totally more than adequate, and all served piping hot, and the breakfast staff were very cheery and on the ball. Definitely a place to stop, and enjoy the area. Especially with it been do central to lots of attractions.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
This is fantastic indeed, thank you for your review! We are so glad to see the team looked after you and you enjoyed our breakfast options. Please do come back soon!

"Good for organised party lunch"

4
15/04/2018

A birthday in the family, relations all over southern England so geographically this is an a ideal venue. Sunday lunch, standard fare (beef or turkey) 40 of us, only criticism is that nobody from the hotel stayed with us to ensure nobody ran out of anything during the meal.

Many thanks for your lovely review. We love celebrations and get quite excited when we can help make them special. So sorry to hear that we didn't stay with you, we really dropped the ball there; we'll be sure to get that sorted! Please don't wait until the next celebration to come back!

Sunday lunch at the carvery. Good room. Took time to be seated. Seating comfortable. Offered drinks but staff forgot what we wanted. They turned up in the end. Only two young people serving they did their best but it took so long to get the servings. Food tasted good. Good selection on the carvery. Freshly cooked. Coffee arrived at the end of the meal but we had to wait to pay the bill. Overall food good but service very poor due to lack of staff. Would I go again, yes if I was not in a rush.

Really sorry to hear your visit wasn't as good as it should have been - we really dropped the ball there. We'll be sure to get that sorted! We stayed 3 nights and did not want to leave. Lovely modern clean hotel with great staff. The grounds are very well kept and there is plenty of free parking. Our room and bathroom were a good size and you could turn the heating on or off so it was not overpowering. The breakfast was adequate but I have had better. It is a very busy hotel with a lot of business people coming and going. Breakfast gets picked over early and the staff are always busy replenishing everything. We ate in the Olive Tree restaurant for the 3 nights we were there. Emese and Szabolcs were amazing. They never stopped. They always had a smile and were very polite. Of course, the hotel has WIFI. Thank you for a great stay.

"George Michael Tribute Dinner Dance"

31/03/2018

On a cold Windy, Friday a wonderful night was had. Disco and tribute nights at the Calcot are legendary. My wife celebrated her 50th birthday, cake, announced, happy birthday, sing along. Amazing Robert Taylor, George Michael Tribute got everyone dancing, which continued with the 80-90s disco until 12. Everyone was dancing having fun. Great atmosphere. Big thank you to the staff for making it work! Whitney night, in April, Disco Boogie night in May and ABBA tribute in June, brilliant!

So pleased you enjoyed your evening with us and had a great time dancing the night away! Really looking forward to seeing you again for the next event.

"Our Wedding 24/3/18"

26/03/2018

We held our wedding at The Best Western Calcot Hotel. Nothing was too much trouble. Christine and her team went well above and beyond our expectations. The food served to our 70+ day guest was plentiful and very hot. Food was delicious. Our evening food was for 100+ and again was plentiful and delicious. A small party stayed from Friday to Sunday. Rooms were very clean, cleaners were really accommodating. They are a 5* wedding venue without the huge price tags ??????????

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
WOW What a review thank you so very much. It was a pleasure to look after you. We'll be sure to pass on your feed back to the entire team especially Christine. Look forward to seeing you again soon!

21/03/2018

Only stayed for one night but found the room very clean as expected. The only thing I could really fault was a loose tap on the bathroom sink causing the plug to not operate. Had to wait a little for bar staff to appear but the drinks were affordable unlike some hotels we have stayed out. Breakfast was excellent as was the service. Overall a very good experience and would recommend. We'll be staying here again.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for your lovely review! We are so happy to hear you enjoyed your stay with us and that you found the everything to your liking. Our apologies for the plug in the bathroom we dropped the ball there, we'll be sure to get that sorted. Hope to welcome you back soon!

"Great prize "

18/03/2018

I won a 2 night stay with dinner, bed and breakfast in a charity auction- and what a great prize it was! Although some areas of the hotel were a bit dated, it was spotlessly clean. Staff without exception were friendly, approachable and very professional. The food was delicious and well cooked (and fresh honey in the comb at breakfast to die for!). Thank you Best Western for donating such a great prize- and I don't doubt we'll be back when the weather gets better!

I arrived here very late at night, after a long delayed return flight from Munich. I had no booking, but was too tired to drive further in the challenging snowy, icy conditions. They looked after me very well, I got a great room ( at good rate) The breakfast room & staff were also very welcoming . I was almost sad to be traveling home straight after. All in all great service & great hotel.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review

"Expensive and Average"

03/03/2018

It's a Best Western.... like most they're not great. So I stayed 4 nights (Sun-Thur) and was put into a Twin Room as the Hotel didn't have anything consecutive at £90 a night I felt this was expensive, and it didn't help to travel 4 miles into Reading it would take circa 40+ minutes each time. The room had a tiny TV and the only thing modern looked like the Bathroom. The Hotel had no fitness facilities. The Food in the restaurant was nice for both dinner and breakfast.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for your review of your most recent stay! Sorry to learn you're not a fan of our brand; we are currently undergoing a review of the hotel which will include an upgrade of our rooms in the to not too distant future. We would love to see you back at the hotel, so please feel free to reach out to me directly and I would be more than happy to personally oversee your stay. You can reach me at [email protected]

"Average at Best"

01/03/2018

Perception on arrival (on a Sunday) looked good - plenty of car parking space; warm welcome from Receptionist; Room was OK but for an Executive Room I'd expect a King sized bed these days and more modern heating system than an old radiator. Sunday bar opening times were inconvenient even though as residents we could get a drink but had to walk to Reception to ask them to get someone to come and serve you; Sunday dinner menu was very strange - no roast dinners anywhere in sight - does one really want a burger for Sunday dinner??!! Even more a so-called barman who doesn't know what a Calypso Coffee is!!!!!! On Monday morning things obviously were more what one would expect - a good breakfast spread - but a weird contraption for dispensing marmalade or jam into little dishes; also a much better weekday dinner menu - and food was of pretty good quality - just a pity really that Sunday service/menu offering let them down when we arrived, along with rooms which need refurbishing/upgrading.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and we are extremely sorry to hear your stay was not as it should have been we definitely dropped the ball here! "Good Carve up"

20/02/2018

Sunday carvery in the restaurant was very good with comfortable seating and nicely laid tables, with table cloths. The service on arrival was very warm and friendly and we were taken to our seats. Nice menu for starters and desert and the main course was very generous and varied with a choice of three meats and some of each if required. All courses very good.

Annette C, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you the positive feedback. Seems you really had a great time. Don't leave it too long for another great Sunday lunch!

"Restaurant: Great service "

08/02/2018

This review is about the hotel's restaurant. I visited here for a family birthday meal. My mum has mobility problems and I was very impressed with the excellent customer-service that I experienced, particularly by the Restaurant Manager. She treated my mum respectfully, factoring in the limitations that my mum had. She was friendly and helpful, even offering to escort my mum to the loo. The other staff were also very friendly, with one guy offering to carry my mum's plate from the carvery back to the table. The food was very nice, with generous helpings from the carvery, and was great value too (£17 for 3 courses, plus coffee).

05/02/2018

My wife & I had an overnight stay here whilst attending a wedding reception. There was an early check in, available from 14:00 hrs & a good check out time of 11:00 hrs. This suited us perfectly, enabling an early lunch in the nearby village of Theale & plenty of time for my wife to get ready for the reception at 19:00!! On arrival the hotel staff were very good, with an efficient check in. The hotel was welcoming & clean. The room itself was also clean, the bed was extremely comfy, the bathroom also was clean & everything worked correctly. The main hotel bar was good & reasonably priced, there were comfy leather chairs to sit in. Our stay also included a buffet style breakfast with hot & cold options, again this was very nice with good service. I would say if you ever need to stay in or near Reading stay here.

"Business stay - met all requirements - thank you"

09/01/2018

Welcoming reception staff, clean and warm room - walls are a little thin. Restaurant was ok, food was not bad - starter was better than main and desert was decent. The staff were a little slow but nothing terrible. Breakfast was a buffet which was good in terms of selection e.g. poached, scrambled or fired eggs and quality. Overall a decent stay - thank you

Was here Sunday eve for my works Christmas do ! very friendly and helpful staff - nothing was too much trouble. It was in the main dance hall. we weren't the on9y group there but it was very well organised. Drinks at the bar very reasonable/cheep (£1.70 half a coke & £3.80 for Jack Daniels & coke) very clean and tidy area. we were sat in 2 groups of around 15. The menu was very good, simple but beautiful food. After dinner we all had a great dance on the big dance floor was so much fun and plenty of roomful everyone, I would highly recommend having an event here !

We booked one of the Calcot Hotel parties for a group of our neighbours. This included an overnight stay, 3 course meal, a live band and disco until 12:30am and breakfast the next day. The hotel do these quite often and I'm sure you wouldn't be disappointed. The hotel is nice, rooms are clean, warm and comfortable. The staff were excellent and catered for our every need. We'll definitely be back.

"Sunday lunch"

3
29/11/2017

Sunday (roast) lunch is not my favourite food but as such meals go this was ok. The buffet arrangement will suit many, especially those who insist on piling their plates high, but for me it allowed me to pick the vegetables I prefer (of which there was a good choice). The rest of my group, who all seemed to be Sunday roast experts, enjoyed their choices. Pleasant dining but nothing special.

"The bar with no beer"

3
23/11/2017

Whilst the hotel is conveniently located and all the staff are friendly, welcoming and professional, it is somewhat dated. Having eaten en route, I wanted a couple of beers before retiring. Sadly the bar had run out of draught beer.

Dear trevorw535, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review after your recent visit to us. It's wonderful to read your lovely comments about the staff being friendly and welcoming. "Queen Tribute Dinner Dance"

21/11/2017

A rare opportunity to see a concert quality Tribute to Queen with full silver service dinner served by courteous and friendly staff. The Management welcomed guests at their tables making guests feel ‘at home'. Following coffee and mints, the dj Jason, ‘warmed' up the guests of varying ages with some good old sing-a-longs before the band hour long show performing with hit after hit with outstanding accuracy. We'll be back to see the shows detailed in the brochures on the tables. Well recommended for true value for money shows and dinner.

DJ Jason is a regular at the hotel and is always there to get the party going, and to keep everyone dancing off into the night. We've got some great nights coming up over the festive period and into 2018 so we hope you'll be able to come along and see one of those too! I promise that there will be many more amazing nights! "Poor food "

1
10/11/2017

After reading the menu in the lobby I thought roast rib of beef sounded lovely. How wrong I was, this has got to be the worst roast I have ever had. £10.50 for what was a microwave box roast with a rubbery Yorkshire pudding. Staff very uninterested even when the restaurant was almost empty. The room was clean and tidy but cold. I had to turn all the radiators on and wait for the air to bleed through. Breakfast was better but fried eggs burnt. Clearly no proper chef here!!! Book a room but eat dinner elsewhere??

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dear woowoos, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. We welcome all feedback, positive or negative. 09/11/2017

Firstly we had trouble locating this hotel. Phoned for help and the lady at reception was so impatient and arrogant we had regretted paying on booking. On arrival we waited for almost half an hour as she was busy, others were also waiting. No aircon, stifling night, if you opened the window the traffic was so noisy you could not sleep. Rooms need a revamp, all very tired.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dead tolgabrolga, I'm very sorry to learn that you had a difficulty finding the hotel, normally being situated just 1 mile from Junction 12 on the M4 normally we don't have any issues with finding the hotel. Our reception team have a positive track record in customer service and I apologise this was not your experience. It is very unusual to have to wait the length of time that you did. We don't advertise Aircon, as this is something we don't have, we can provide guests with fans on request. I'm sorry to hear that you had a disturbed nights sleep. It seems that you was in the rooms that are going through an ongoing upgrade. Kind Regards Andrew MacLachlan General Manager

31/10/2017

We picked this hotel as all the others near here were fully booked. And our luck was in! The hotel approach is very clean and the gardens are well kept. The reception was clean and tidy, and welcoming. The reception staf were very pleasant and helpful. Our room, 50, was very comfortable, clean and the bathroom was spotless. The bed was firm but not hard and we had a very good nights sleep. This depsite the fact that there was a road outside we heard no noise. The restaurant food was excellent. Service from the waitress was very good and helpful. My wife had the steak, and I had the steak and guiness pie. Both were as good as you can get. To my shame I could not finish the pie as there was so much steak! Breakfast was very good, both the cold selection of cereals and fruit, and the hot food was very tasty. Our eggs were cooked to order. If you stayed in one of the other local hotels, well you missed out on a very good pleasant hotel

"Avoid like the plague"

29/10/2017

If you want a spacious, well appointed room, comfortable bed, great night's sleep, clean, tidy, practical bathroom and pleasant surroundings, DON'T BOOK INTO THE CALCOT HOTEL, READING. This was one of the most appalling beds we've ever had the misfortune to sleep in; hard as concrete, on a 30 degree slope and the smallest double you could possibly get. I even tried to top and tail at one point during the night, in order to avoid the 30 degree slope, but this too proved fruitless. The bathroom was so small, you have to wend your way round the door in order to be able to get to the toilet. The tile grout is covered in mould, as are the corners of the tiny window recess (in order to open this you have to stand in the bath), and the floor around the toilet is dirty and suspiciously sticky. There is absolutely no air flow through the bathroom, despite an extremely noisy extractor fan, and the whole of the bathroom is consequently soaking wet after a shower, with a permanently misted up mirror. The food in the restaurant is average at best, but with well above average prices, and the bar area is cold, with a large TV blaring in a corner. Suffice it to say, we won't be returning and it was a toss up to decide which I would do first.....leave a review or visit the chiropractor.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dear creased, I am so sorry to learn of your dissatisfaction, there was a duty manager on shift when you departed who would have been happy to discuss your complaint in person. I have checked the room you stayed in and personally do not agree with your comments regarding the bed being "hard as concrete" and its down to personal preference. I did not witness the 30 degree angle you speak of. It is a standard double bed. The bathroom is a standard size bathroom at the Hotel. With regards to the airflow, there is an extractor & I have asked our maintenance to look at the noise levels. There is also a fully opening window in the bathroom which would have helped with any airflow issues. Kind Regards Andrew MacLachlan General Manager

"Ok, nothing special"

3
11/10/2017

Everything here is, well, OK. other than the staff who are fantastically polite. The rooms are clean and have everything you need. Unfortunately the bed linen was was a bit scratch. The restaurant; although it was 80% empty, you'll have to chose a table based on the number of people in your party. There was no drinks menu so no way to know what wines they offer. Menu is limited but reasonable, and has all your standard items (steaks, burgers, fish and chips plus some veggie options). I wouldn't return in a hurray, but it does certainly tick most of the boxes if you need a quick stay.

Enjoyable time at our friends Golden Wedding party. The staff were so very helpful and friendly. The food was well prepared and presented. We stayed overnight in a very nice room which was clean and tastefully decorated but the bathroom was a letdown. So tiny and the bath was deep and narrow with a shower over the bath which we could not use. There is ample parking space which is useful.

Now This is the standard expected when you stay at a best western. Our sat nav did take us to a cul de sac a Mile away. So keep your eyes open on main road for the sign, that we did not see. But what a Lovely hotel and exceptionally friendly staff. Room was good. And comfortable with usual complimentary products. Even though on A main road. Traffic did not bother us & we slept well. We had a small problem in the room and maintenance sorted it straight away. Lovely out side area to have a drink. Food was perfect. Good selection of food & drinks. Breakfast was buffet style with all the trimmings. And Gary makes a mean fried egg. Reception ordered taxi, no problem. Always happy to help. Bar was opened for us any time we asked for a drink. Would absolutely Recommend this hotel and stay again.

"The Overlook Hotel more like...."

05/09/2017

This place was like walking into a time warp. The room was like an old peoples home with a damp smell that I couldn't place and a very dated interior. I moved the bed slightly to get access to a plug and thought i had found a new life form, only for this to actually be a full on lock of someone's hair! I decided to push the bed back and ignore it. When i ventured to the bathroom i found it to be covered in a blue coloured genuine marble laminate - very 80s. The dining room was equally as interesting. Once being given the Sunday menu i decided to order the fish and chips - very quickly after ordering i was delivered the meal. Now i didnt know it was actually possible to make food this hot - let alone that quickly! Once i left it for some time to cool i eventually noticed that nothing really tasted of anything - i think this may have been the downside of cooking it in the blast furnace. When i returned to the room, i located the root cause of the smell - turns out it was the damp curtains! Once i used my antibacterial hand sanitiser all was well and i climbed into the bed, which was actually pretty comfy and to my liking. The room above me clearly wasn't going to bed and appeared to have the TV on all night whilst walking around, perhaps running some kind of on site hair dressers i was yet to find...

Never experienced anything like it in a hotel. There was a wedding reception which went on till midnight which was followed by at least half an hour of drunk people talking in the corridors. This was bearable. But then, for the rest of the night, we did not get any sleep. The walls/doors are in no way sound proofed enough and my whole night was spend listening to people opening/shutting their doors. This went on till about six in the morning. The friendly staff and nice decor are all irrelevant when you're in a hotel you can't actually sleep in!

Well it's a Best Western so don't expect a five star place. Having moved rooms as I was right over the disco and the walls were vibrating, I have to say I slept extremely well, not waking til 8.45, way past my normal getting up time. The room was clean, with kettle etc to make tea, coffee or chocolate, and lots of hot water in the shower. I would recommend that you take earplugs. Don't think I would have slept so well without them. And the breakfast was a very pleasant surprise with a good selection, bacon and freshly cooked eggs plus fresh fruit was my choice. The hotel staff were also very accommodating in moving me when they realised I was right over the disco. No ifs or buts.

"amazingly comfortable bed!"

03/08/2017

in many respects this is a dated looking hotel, though the general rooms were having lots of work undertaken the bedrooms were furnished with old fashioned furniture and the sort furnishing and design was all a bit tired. The shower rooms had had recent updates though the extractor fan in our room was poor and didn't work well. There is no air conditioning in the rooms either so lucky we visited in July so it was raining. The thing that makes this hotel very good as apposed to average for the cost is the amazingly comfortable beds! we had 5 rooms between us and everyone commented on the beds. Better than Premier and that's the first time I've ever said that. We also had great service from all the staff and one of the best self service full English breakfasts the next morning.

Thoroughly recommended as a convenient stop off just by junction 12 of the M4 motorway (and very close to the only IKEA store in the entire area!). Rooms are spacious, clean, well-maintained, with comfy beds and pillows. Breakfast is generous, with nice touches like honey from honeycombs and good croissants available. Every single member of staff proved to be pleasant, helpful and above all efficient - a sign of really good management. Prices are very reasonable indeed. We took two rooms for four of us plus a teething nine month old baby- dealing with in particular everybody went to enormous effort. Overall we all had an excellent experience with this hotel, perhaps somewhat to our surprise. I hope this acts as a counterbalance to some of the recent negative posts on this site.

"Disabled wheelchair users please check carefully"

21/07/2017

Booked to stay 2 nights at this hotel as our youngest son was getting married at Uffton court. The hotel staff were very good but our eldest son is a wheelchair user and this was not really suitable for him. We booked the superior rooms but these were no different from other basic rooms at other hotels. The room which was called a disabled room had very little turning space for his wheelchair. We were told that we would have to use the fire escape entrance as hotel only had a very old fashioned Stena stairlift and this is not suitable for a full time wheelchair user We had no problem with using this when we originally booked but thought that it would be well maintained. We were very concerned about the ramp that was put up to allow my son to get in to the back of the hotel. It was just a piece of hardboard and by the next morning I guess a car must have driven over it and it was broken. The entrance we used was in a poor state of repair and not even cleaned down. Every time we went out we had to phone reception so they could reset the alarm. This could be very tiresome if a sole wheelchair user decided to visit the hotel. We mentioned this problem when we checked out so hopefully they have now installed a proper ramp .

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello 786554, Thank you for leaving us a review on TripAdvisor. As you have mentioned we do have a Stannah stairlift that is used to help wheelchair users get down or up the stairs, I can only apologise that this wasn't suitable for your eldest son. If using the stairlift access is very easily gained via the front of the hotel. The ramp has been used for a while and has been maintained by our maintenance team, however after your comments we're looking into something that would provide more comfort for guests having to use it. The need to call reception is so that we can make sure all fire escapes are alarms as protection for our guests. We hope that you and your family had a lovely wedding day for your youngest son, and we'd like to wish him and his partner all the best in the future. We do hope you'll come and stay with us again when your next in this area. Kind Regards Andrew Maclachlan General Manager

+ve - Clean though dated and tired '80s style room. Decent desk for work and free wifi on day 1 (see -ve for day 2) Beds v soft - but comfortable. Good food. -ve - was given a room on the ground floor which is down some steps (no lift) at the end of a corridor with a window that opens onto the carpark which in turn is direct onto the dual carriange way. Reception not willing to change room and not prepared to help with luggage. I have a disability that means I can't lift easily. (apologies to anyone who heard luggage banging on steps). Very hot weather so needed to open window as no air con - no restriction on how far window will open.. Whilst slated blinds are in place these do not offer complete privacy and the only way to obtain it is to draw the heavy curtains. Does not make a single woman feel safe! Second night - Rang reception to ask for wifi code was told it was on the white check-in card I was given when I checked in and phone put down. Given I had lost the card I decided to use my mobile data! Didn't stay a third. So check you don't lose your white card and ensure you don't have a downstairs room.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Wilson 14, Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback after your recent stay with us. I'm sorry to hear of the disappointing stay you had. Staff are more than happy to help with carrying luggage for our guests, so I'm disappointed to hear that you've said that this help wasn't offered. The weather recently has been unseasonably warm, and to try and help combat this we provide fans to our guests on requests. We will need to investigate your comments about the blinds, as when installed they offered complete privacy. Our reception team on check in give you the room card and the white card you've mentioned. They would have informed you about this at time of check in, and told you that it is needed if you wished to charge items to your room. You would have used this card when you used the wifi on your first day. I will speak with the head receptionist in regards to your comment about your phone call to reception, we do get guest requests for the wifi code and this is passed on over the phone. Overall, I can see that this wasn't an enjoyable stay for you, I do wish that this was something that could have been rectified while you were in the hotel rather than finding out of your disappointment via TripAdvisor. We would love for you to come back and give us a second chance, just so we can show you how great our hotel and staff are. Kind Regards Andrew Maclachlan General Manager

Paid fir an executive room, which was no different from the standard apart from a few sweets in the room, certainly not woeth tbe extra cost..Bed was very uncomfortable and the feeling of falling off.. Loud music until Midnight on the friday and 2300 on Saturday, staff were pleasant but would have been nice to have been made aware of late night entertainment as we were backed onto the main reception hall.. Unfortunately I don't think I will be returning..

The area in which your room was located isn't one that we've had noise issues reported before so we thank you for bringing this to our attention. As with many hotels beds vary, and it seems that the bed you had wasn't to your liking. I can only apologise for this, if it was mentioned at time we could have offered you a change of room that would have suited you better. I have now stopped her 5 times as it is convenient for meetings in Reading, my wife came along this time and she though that the room was good but not exciting, this room still had the bath, which means a real squeeze to the loo. 12 of us had a meal & it was excellent. I was frustrated on arrival that half of the car park, including the disabled parking space was closed off to cater for a school prom later (obviously more important than guests) an the area directly in front of the hotel was also coned off. I did complain at the reception & had a call from the duty manager in my room offering to move the rope. I pointed out that I has already dragged the luggage in. Later I was disgusted when I asked the receptionist if I could be guaranteed a parking space after going out, only to be told there are plenty out back !!!!

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Druthboy, Many thanks for taking the time to leave us a review on TripAdvisor. It's great to hear that you've stayed with us regularly while working within the Reading area. Some of bedrooms still have the traditional Bath/Shower combo, some of our other rooms have had the bath removed. As you stated we did have a school prom that evening. We cone off one side of our car park to allow the vehicles a way in and out, this also serves as a way to make sure our hotel guests cars are away from any potential damage. The disable space shouldn't have been coned off, so I can only apologise for this. We look forward to you coming to stay with us again. Please ask for one of the refurbished rooms that have a shower only to see if this style of room is better for you. Kind Regards Andrew MacLachlan General Manager

From stepping through the door to leaving, we were greeted with very pleasant staff, nothing to much trouble. No air con in the rooms but as it was hot a fan had been supplied which was so much appreciated. lovely breakfast, buffet well worth the price, eat as much as you like, tea and toast served to you, but you can have as much as you require. Fruit, ham cheese yoghurts, jams cereals, and then eggs, scrambled, fried, bake beans, toms, bacon, sausages, help yourself, all hot and well cooked. Room was clean and fresh, only down side for me was the shower, the shower head was horrible, could not find a place to stand to get the water from the head to wash you with, think some new heads would be good. A very enjoyable stay for a fab wedding we attended.

Great lil hotel, terrific restaurant staff. Very cute and good food overall. Breakfast includes full english 10pounds or continental 7pounds. If you book upon arrival it is 8pounds. Online for some reason it was 16. Dinner is nice, only complaint the break smelt of mould with my soup and was microwaved hot. It's not worth using stale bread to save a few pence and risk your reputation, is it? For the price paid cannot complain about the rooms. Hot water, comfy bed, small tv.

One night stay. Pleasant staff at check in and restaurant. Fairly basic evening dinner menu, burgers, steaks etc., not great quality. All the rooms on my corridor had a warning sign about the step just inside the door, but with the positioning of the suitcase stand and light switch, I was very quickly distracted and nearly fell twice.

We have been to many functions here since the 1960's and the standard they have maintained has been consistent. For this small function with Family & Friends we decided to hire the Loddon Suite which can hold 20 to 30 comfortably seated. The charge for this room is reasonable as it includes Waitress service, which means that the diners all get to eat at the same time rather a carvery, The food selection was excellent for starters, mains and desserts. The refreshments were plentiful and tea & coffee included in the deal. A cake table was provided too and the waitresses were brilliant at getting this cut and distributed. I recommend this venue for small or even bigger parties as they have several different size rooms to accommodate larger numbers.

"What a shocker"

In the section of the hotel I was a given a room for 2 nights, I could hear everything from the room above, movement around the room, use of bathroom and on my second night snoring! I ate in the restaurant on the first night and though reasonably priced the food was bland. The staff in the restaurant were ok except for the miserable lady at breakfast, she did nothing to help my mood after my first sleepless night. What concerned me most was the total lack of empathy from reception when I mentioned the noise after my first night, there was no offer to move me and from the woman at the back of reception she just raised her eyebrows and threw comments in my direction that suggested an attitude of how dare I complain.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Adrianrfpawsey, Thank you for leaving feedback after your recent visit. We're sorry to hear that your sleep was disturbed by noise from the above room, and then by snoring on the 2nd night. Stayed for three nights in a single room. I experienced slow WiFi, with my laptop struggling to connect whilst sat on the desk, having to sit on the bed in order to ensure it was connected well. The shower seemed have a very loud high pitch squeal when turned on, which made me shower as quickly as I could for the good of other guests - I also found it very peculiar that there was no extractor fan and the tiny bathroom window was locked meaning I couldn't air the bathroom without opening the main bedroom window. Finally the curtains wouldn't shut fully due to the rail clips being broken. Overall I was very disappointed in my stay, considering other stays I've had for the same or less money. The saving grace was the shortbread.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at Best Western Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Matt P, We appreciate you taking time out of your day to leave us a review after your stay with us recently. We're sorry to hear of the issues experienced with our hotel wifi, especially after we have upgraded the supplier and is unusual to hear of the wifi being slow. These sorts of issues shouldn't happen and we can only apologise for this. Was this brought to the attention of the staff on duty? They'd have been able to rectify this for you by speaking to our service provider. With regards to the newly installed shower and it “squeal”, this is the first we've heard of this issue and will get our maintenance team to check all the showers where your room was located. Our room curtains are regularly checked by our housekeeping team to make sure that they fully close, so we will get this investigated too. We're very happy to see that the shortbread provided in the bedroom was the saving grace. We'd very much like to welcome you back the next time you are in the local area. Stayed at the hotel over a weekend as studying at a local college. The single room was small, but was clean and comfy. Plenty of parking as well and all staff seemed polite and friendly. Now for the down side, the noise, it is terrible. From the room I was in, you can actually hear the people talking in the bar below! The Hotel also books itself out for functions/parties etc so the music sounds like it is actually being played in your room. Having booked the room for a study weekend, where sleep was required, this wasn't ideal and I won't be staying here again. The final insult was my room was near to a fire exit where a loud alarm went off when anyone opened the door! Happened about 4/5 times each night in the early hours and woke me each time. I appreciate that the hotel can't legislate for its guests, but why the alarm?!?! It doesn't stop people using it, it just wakes everyone else up......

The hotel itself is quite dated, my room on the ground floor was dark and had an odd smell. Also could hear every word spoken and every movement in the room above/next door and plumbing was very noisy. Thankfully almost everyone staying was a solo business traveller so still got a decent night sleep. The reception and restaurant service on the other hand were excellent. Lovely and efficient. And both dinner and breakfast were great.

Terribly small box room with no air and damp and mould problem. On complaint I was told there was no other room available. When I said I was happy to leave (10:30pm) they said there was a room but it needed cleaning which was going to take half an hour. I waited and the second room was actually a standard hotel room so I stayed. I don't think anybody should ever be allocated room 17 or 18 whichever it was as it is not fit for human use. On the other hand breakfast was good and staff were helpful.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi SarahK1911, Firstly let me thank you for taking the time to leave a review of our hotel on TripAdvisor. From your booking details a "small standard room", was booked. These rooms are in the original part of the hotel, and therefore vary in sizes and this is why a cheaper rate is offered compared to the “standard rooms” that we offer in the hotel. The rooms offer the same amenities as the standard rooms. The bedroom that you original booking was for is due to have a refurbishment completed on it in the near future. We would like to thank you for your comments about our breakfast and our staff. We always aim to please our guests, and it seems that your original room didn't meet these expectations. We're glad you found the 2nd room to meet your expectations. We do hope you'll come back to see us again Andrew MacLachlan, General Manager

Attended another Motown and old soul disco at the Calcot and another fantastic night. Great food, great atmosphere and great music that filled the floor from start to finish. Our room was not the biggest in the world but quite adequate for a nights sleep. We will be back!

Stay here regularly with my partner on business. It is tremendous value compared to other hotel chains. Especially the one advertised by Lenny Henry. A great breakfast included and as an platinum member lots of freebies including complimentary alcoholic drink and biscuits, sweets, bottled water. The staff are all so friendly and welcoming. The restaurant appears somewhat dated. But actually for me that's part of the charm. Food is very good. Wholesome. In fact I can't find fault. If you pay a lot for something it can really disappoint. But this is value and charm.

Stayed here for a few days. Arrived on a saturday evening, car park was very busy as there was a wedding at the hotel. To get into the hotel we had to run the gauntlet of the smokers who had congregated right outside the front door, managed to get them to move and moved through the blue haze of smoke. Reception, welcome was one of the poorest we have received. Very little or no information about the hotel was forthcoming. The receptionist said to us "I notice you are a Platinum member, heres your upgrade" handing my wife a small bar of chocolate, not impressed. Room was a good size at the back of the hotel so no noise from traffic. Bed was comfortable . The bathroom was poor. Shower over a bath, get rid of it and install a proper shower cubicle, had issues with the shower curtain attaching itself to me and my head grazing the extractor fan. The position of the toilet was ridiculous , I had more space when I was sat on a portaloo in a toilet tent when I used to camp. The bed space is large enough to extend the bathroom 2 feet which would make it so much better. Breakfast was really good, loads of choice and the staff were friendly and helpful. Dinner was good too, good sized portions. Cleanliness of the room needs to improve , black mould on the tiles surrounding the bath. One day didn't have a bath mat, so used a hand towel , next day had a bathmat but no hand towel. They kept giving us new soap when we had barely used the previous bit. Needs work this place.

We went away to get married and had our evening event a week later at the Calcot. All the staff and events people all worked together we had hired an Elvis impersonator as recommend by the event manager on site and everyone said how brilliant he was. Our room was clean and tidy and the breakfast was lovely. Would highly recommend the Calcot best in Reading.

Stopped here three nights on business. It's OK. Staff are fine. Rooms are clean. Restaurant is dated and a bit shabby - décor circa 1980. I'd go again because it's reasonably priced for Reading. Breakfast is a bit below average. Other meals are fairly decent.

16/10/2016

We went for a function with about 60 other people. The bedroom was well laid out, clean and tidy. The function room was a good size. There were 3 choices each for starter, main and dessert. All the food that was provided was very well cooked, obviously freshly prepared and there was not a great wait between courses. The serving staff were very good, in fact all the staff in the hotel were very good. We ate breakfast the following morning, bacon, sausage, hash browns, beans tomato and options of fried egg, poached egg or scrambled eggs. It was presented buffet style and my one criticism was that the food was only warm as opposed to hot - they need to turn up the buffet warmers. Plenty of toast was provided, coffee tea, and the usual cold breakfast items, fruit etc. We had a good stay here and if we are in the area we would definitely use it again - just please turn up the buffet warmers at breakfast time.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Maverick_in_UK, Thank you for leaving us this review after your recent visit to one of our function nights at the hotel. It's great to see that you found the food during our function to be to your liking, our chefs work very hard to make sure that guests have a lovely dining experience but to also make sure that wait times between courses are low. We will speak with our breakfast chefs about the buffet layout and make sure that they adjust the warmers according. We will make sure that all our staff are aware of your lovely comments about them. We do hope that your back this was in the new future and are able to come and stay with us again. Kind Regards Best Western Calcot Hotel

15/10/2016

I had an enjoyable stay and a good night's sleep. I was kindly upgraded to a room at the back of the hotel, very nicely furinished with a bath too. The TV was smaller than in many hotels these days but it did not worry me too much. The evening meal was nice...I had tuna steak although I requested it not too well done. They waitress admitted they only came one way as they were frozen portions! I assume this means they were pre-cooked also. I don't think fresh fish is too much to ask in a busy hotel personally. Still it was very tasty with a lovely piquant salsa on top. Lovely banana split to finish. The service was very good. One small gripe which I complained about. I ordered sandwiches for a colleague and myself at lunch time. My brown bread was a little stale and the turkey was plastic wrapped slice turkey roll which was wafer thin. For £4.75 I would expect the turkey to be fresh and carved from a breast or similar. Not very impressive. I did mention it to the bar lady and she said it usually did come fresh. I think maybe a refund was in order but I forgot to mention it on checkout

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello 510col, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review on Tripadvisor after your recent stay with us on business. It's great to hear that you have a good night sleep and that our reception team was able to upgrade your room from our smaller rooms to our standard ones. With regards to the Tuna, we've spoken to our chefs and it does come in frozen but it cooked onsite, there is no precooking involved, we're glad to hear that you did enjoy your meal. The sandwiches are all made at time of order, and these are done using meats that have been cooked and sliced onsite. It's possible that the chef maybe didn't put enough turkey in the sandwich, rather than it being "plastic wrapped slice turkey roll", we're sorry that this wasn't rectified at the time. We do look forward to you coming back to visit us again when your in the area for business. Kind Regards Best Western Calcot Hotel

Many thanks to Andrew and his team in providing a wonderful service. Rooms were clean, food was hot, setting and venue were perfect from morning breakfast through to the late night disco. Would certainly have no hesitation in recommending the Calcot to hold your family functions, especially weddings. "Sunday Carvery"

3
23/09/2016

Sunday carvery birthday meal, table booked for 9 people for 12:30. Waited to be seated for about 5 minutes whilst the staff stood in the corner and had a good old chin wag with each other! Wanted a veggie option was told it was a pasta dish so ordered one of these right at the beginning. Starters came quite quickly but really not much there. Small piece of fish and ready buttered triangle of bread (which was in fact margarine!), small bowls of soup that came with rock hard butter so you couldn't spread it onto the bread! Help yourself to the main course obviously, meat all okay but veg quite hard and peas were like little bullets! Asked for the veggie meal and chef shouted out to some one in the back 'put some pasta on'!! All 9 of us seated and eating our dinners including the person who ordered the veggie meal - she had nearly finished her vegetables by the time the pasta came out. Why when the dish was ordered right at the start was this not ready with the rest of the meals? Choice of deserts but not huge portions - no cream with the fruit salad either! Staff more intent on having a chat with each other. Disappointed meal. Think they could do better.

Andrew_MacLachlan, Manager at BEST WESTERN Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Lcf110866, Firstly let me thank you for taking the time to leave us a review on Trip Advisor. We're sorry to hear of your overall disappointment with our Sunday Carvery meal. As you can see from Trip Advisor we rarely get any criticisms of our Sunday Lunch so therefore we were somewhat taken aback by your comments but share your disappointment. Our starters are freshly prepared by our chefs and again these are not something that we get issues with especially in regards to quantity. Similarly, our soups are served in a typical standard sized soup bowl. We are pleased that you enjoyed the meat but again disappointed to hear that you didn't enjoy the vegetables and the way they were cooked on the day. We offer a variety of desserts and these again are regular portion sized slices of cakes. If you had wanted cream served with your fruit salad this could have quite easily been arranged on request. The late arrival of the pasta dish is something we will certainly look into and we can only apologise for the serving of this item which was unacceptable. Your comments will be brought to the attention of the Restaurant Manager and the Chefs in addition to your points ‘having a good old chin wag' Once again we are sorry you did not enjoy your meal but thank you for raising these points.

My brother and I stayed here for a family wedding Friday and Saturday nights. We had a lovely carvery meal on the Friday evening and there was also a Motown/Old Skool disco night on too so that was a bonus. The rooms we had were basic but clean, maybe a fresh lick of paint and some new mattresses are needed but the staff were very polite and helpful. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone in the area.

"So many little things"

3
12/09/2016

Room was not of a high standard, walls are not sound proofed enough as we were disturbed by talking and TV from next door. No fridge or bar in room, bathroom was small and cramped when using the sink. Bed was small and mattress bouncy, every time you moved it was like being on a bouncy castle. Our room was by the main road and hence noisy so we could not have the window open, this was made worse by the fact we requested a quiet room.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Reading Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Ray H, Firstly let me thank you for taking the time to leave a review on Trip Advisor. We're sorry to hear that you didn't find certain aspects of your room to your liking As a 3 star hotel we do not provide mini bars or fridges in rooms. If you had required refreshments we do however offer a room service facility. With regards to your ‘room to room' sound proofing comments, the new owners are taking steps to address this issue which is evident in a few of our rooms. As you may have noticed, we have recently had new windows installed into the majority of our bedrooms which effectively cuts out road noise, however, with the recent spell of unusually hot weather and guests opening windows, the fans provided do not sufficiently cool down a room for which we apologise. Thank you once again for staying at the hotel and we are sorry that elements did not meet your expectations on this occasion Kind Regards Best Western Calcot Hotel

Stayed just the one night, on arrival we were told we had been upgraded to a bigger room, but unfortunately the room smelt of smoke! We reported the smell and the man I told changed our room straight away, (another upgraded room) apologising, explaining people still smoke in the rooms even though everywhere is non smoking. This is not the hotels fault.. Lovely hotel, the room was spotless Would definitely stay again

"Dinner dance"

04/09/2016

What a fantastic weekend we had staying here! Pauline and her team liked after us very well and catered for everyone perfectly. We had a dinner dance for around 100 people and it was great. The down sides were, the room where we had the dinner dance was very hot and took an age to cool down. One member of the serving team was chewing gum whilst serving and really didn't look like she wanted to be there. The gentleman behind the bar in the lounge area was a delight but when he left, it was very difficult to get a drink and we waited 17 minutes at one stage for someone to arrive to serve us and that was after we spoke to someone at the reception. However, the good points were plentiful. The food was lovely. The place itself is really nice. 99% of the staff couldn't do enough for us. The room we stayed in was very clean and airy. The fact the team brought out the food in the evening and it was all piping hot, fresh and very tasty was amazing. No one had a cold meal. How did they do that? ?? Overall, it was a great experience and we're definately going back. We have a wedding to go to there next year and will certainly be booking a room! Thank you so much The Calcot Hotel! Great job! ????

Hello Adam S, Let us thank you for taking the time to leave us a review on TripAdvisor after your recent stay and attendance at the private dinner disco that took place with us. I was looking for somewhere near Reading, but not in the centre. This hotel is easy accessible from the M4 and easy to find. Plenty of car park spaces. Reception was warm and friendly and well organised. Room was the right size for a 1 night stopover and had the usual facilities.Met the family in the bar area, which was light and airy. Bar service was fast and friendly. Reserved a table for the family and was welcomed there .Good choice of food with daily specials available. Service was of a high standard and the prices were reasonable. Even catered for my daughter's wheat intolerance. Hag a good night's sleep and enjoyed a good breakfast. Everything you could possibly want. Hot food was well presented in labelled covered dishes. Well worth the £10.25 per person.

On the outside this hotel looks more modern than it is inside. That said, it was lovely, clean and tidy. The room was a good size as was the bathroom and also the shower was a double shower. We had dinner here and it was superb. So lovely. I had salmon. The plate was full, so make sure you have an appetite. Also I recommend the coconut ice-cream. Yum! Lovely stay and busy with christenings and weddings whilst we were there so must be popular.

I've stayed at the Calcot several times. The staff are superb: always helpful, friendly and thoughtful. Rooms are clean and have everything you need. Breakfasts are delicious and food in the dining room in the evening also nicely prepared and decent value. The hotel is in a good convenient location especially for motorways and airports. I'd have no problem recommending this hotel to friends and family.

Spent two days here whilst in the area on business during very warm weather. Although the bedrooms don't have air conditioning they were comfortable and not hot. The bar looks a little out of date as does the restaurant but the food in the restaurant was very good indeed. The bar sadly doesn't do food and hotel guests have to use the restaurant or pay a rather hefty £5 room service charge. Don't be put off by its location on the A4, I had a room at the front overlooking the car park and the A4 and wasn't bothered by noise even when I had the window open. All in a good hotel with very friendly staff and management, one I would happily return to again.

Lovely friendly service. Good size room i stay here regularly for business but this room was mouldy and damp. Surely housekeeping have seen this?? good location, free parking and wifi and other rooms are not bad. Usual amenaties kettle, iron, tv. Room is clean and tidy and shower has a good pressure. Positive: friendly staff and good location Negative: mouldy room

Hello 1rikster, Thank you for your review of your recent stay at our hotel. We have now tracked down the room and the bedroom curtain concerned and will act appropriately. As you have kindly stated in your review, you have stayed at our hotel on many occasions and encountered a good experience with rooms being clean, tidy and with good water pressure in our showers. Indeed even on this occasion you found the room otherwise good. We can therefore only apologise that the water stain found on the inside of your bedroom curtain spoiled your latest visit. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. Kind Regards Best Western Calcot Hotel

The room we had was a business suite, so we were expecting a reasonable size room and facilities - small double bed, one bucket type chair and a dressing table chair and a coffee table - it was extremely small and smelt dampish. The breakfast however was good. Not worth the price charged.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi MadJecMac, Thank you for leaving us a review after your recent stay with us. It's great to read that you enjoyed your breakfast with us. In regards to your room, we're baffled as to why you thought you'd be having a "business suite" we don't advertise our rooms this way and wouldn't. Reading your description it seems that you stayed in one of our "small standard rooms", we advertise them as this as they're smaller than our standard rooms. We're sorry that someone informed you it would be a "business suite" but this isn't something we'd advertise or our staff would tell you. We do hope you'll stay with us again in the future, we'd suggest booking direct with the hotel to make sure that you've gained the correct information about what we can offer. Kind Regards Best Western Calcot Hotel

"Good Hotel But THE NOISE"

3
23/08/2016

Spent two nights at the hotel and admit rooms were clean and fresh and breakfast was buffet but basically freshly cooked in front of you so no complaints there. Problems we had were due to a wedding being held on the Saturday night and although from our room you could not hear any noise from the wedding reception itself the guests making their way back to rooms throughout the night were very noisy in corridors, shouting and speaking for long periods which meant we got no sleep the first night. Did ask for a room change next morning where I was told "well there was a wedding going on" as if this was a good enough reason fo my wife and I to suffer a sleepless night. There was then a mix up of changing rooms where the day people didn't tell the evening staff which room they had moved us to and we spent about 15 minutes guessing which room we had been put into. Emailed the manager on our return home but did not get any reply until I sent a second email where again I was basically told the noise was my fault as I should have phoned reception and they would have dealt with it, although I explained that by the time I had phoned and reception decided to make the effort of checking out the noise would have moved on. I suggested to hotel that they should check to see if guests were with any functions and if so put them close to reception and if not with function move to areas further away where noisy party makers would not disturb others. I was told this is the policy but I was not asked and nor were 6 other guests that I know stayed at same time! Hotel also has very annoying open door alarms that sound like star wars laser guns (zoom zoom zoom zoom) if a room door is not closed fully. This again is very annoying during the evening, night and early morning when other guests are leaving or returning to their rooms and do not shut their doors fully. Would suggest the hotel gets rid of these. If a guest hasn't got the sense to shut their own door then that's their own stupid fault, the rest of the guests along the same corridor should not have to suffer due to their stupidity!

Hello JohnBsTrips, Thank you for taking the time to post a review. Firstly thank you for your kind comments with regards to the hotel being clean, fresh, in a great location and being served with a freshly cooked breakfast. With regards to your points; reference being disturbed by noisy guests sadly disturbing your sleep, with the General Manager away on holiday, your issues were taken up by one of our Directors who replied to you directly on two occasions offering sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused. As he stated in his letters, you did raise some valid points and promised that the hotel would review its policies as a consequence. The door lock alarm system, which is used now in many hotels, is an added safety feature to remind guests that their door has not been closed securely. Thank you for bringing this to our attention and once again offer our apologies. Kind Regards Best Western Calcot Hotel

We stayed at this Hotel as very good pair of friends were having their 50TH wedding Anniversary party here. We had a 3 course carvery which was great and enjoyed seeing friend again. The hotel was great for an overnight stay. Great breakfast in the morning.

"Typical BW."

12/08/2016

Good, dependable hotel and typical Best Western. Cannot say much to moan about to be fair, but nothing outstanding or that sets it apart from most hence the average. Three star is perfect rating. Would consider it again but at same time would not rush back. Nice staff but seemed to be waiting at check-in and out as well as at bar before evening meal. Evening meal was average at best. If was returning, would look elsewhere for food.

Hi Ginner77, Thank you for leaving us feedback after your stay. It's nice to read that you'd come back to stay at the hotel if you were working in the area again. "Disappointing Service"

08/08/2016

My 102 year old mother has lived next to this hotel for many years so it was only right that when she passed away recently, the hotel was our choice for family and friends to gather after the funeral to say a final farewell. Myself and a friend were the first to arrive and we walked into reception expecting to find a direction sign or a member of staff to welcome our guests, there was nothing. We walked on and asked at the desk where we should go and someone on the phone pointed to a pair of swing doors. On pushing these doors open we found ourselves in a very cold dark hall and the only sign there was something going on were a few tables with cloths on. We stood in this room as more of our guests arrived and still no member of staff turned up to greet us. My sister went to find a member of staff and asked where the refreshments were and she was told that nothing is put out early because the heat drys the food up. My sister pointed out that the air conditioning was on and the room was very cold and dark, my sister asked for the air conditioning to be turned off but it remained on until we were about to leave. A member of staff then turned up with a tea trolley and the food then started to turn up. The first thing we noticed was that the food turned up on large china platters which were all chipped. Come on Calcot Hotel, is this really the best you could have done for our old mum, you only had one chance to get it right but it would seem that our faith in your professional abilities were misplaced. We will never forgive you for the treatment we received because there is nothing you can do to put the matter right. Our advice to anyone who is considering booking this establishment for any type of function to think again and to look on Tripadviser for a place which puts the customer first. I still have ties with the home next door but I will never visit the Calcot Hotel again

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
In the hotel trade things inevitably go wrong and as hoteliers we occasionally have to hold our hands up. However on this occasion we are at pains to comprehend where we were at fault? Our only sin was to be caught on the hop as you arrived a clear 20 minutes prior to the contracted timings. A significant proportion of your comments were also factually incorrect: There was a clearly displayed sign on our Welcome Board TV Monitor, this was pointed out to your sister. A few of your guests also came into the hotel by a side entrance and our staff redirected them accordingly. As it was an extremely hot day we engaged the air conditioning for the comfort of your guests on arrival. When you personally complained we turned it off immediately. For wake functions we do not put food out whilst guests are still arriving to ensure the buffet does not spoil and also enable guests to mingle for a few minutes. The food and teas and coffees were however on the buffet table before 2.45 pm With respect to your comments on ‘chipped' plates we have inspected our crockery and found one single plate showing one chip for which we apologise. This plate has subsequently been binned We have hosted many, many wakes over 40 years and received many ‘thank you' letters. Indeed a few of the guests leaving your event actually thanked us for looking after them. A wake is a very sad occasion and we are sensitive to the circumstances and your comments and criticisms. We will take note of the points mentioned but in general found your review very unfair.

"Old and creaky"

2
05/08/2016

From the outside this hotel doesn't look too bad. The reception is fine and the bar area looks a bit ‘old manish' but there's a certain charm to it. Not so charming when it's full of drunken contractors. The real issue is the bedroom. It's probably one of the most tired rooms I've seen and looks more like an 80s B&B. Scabby bathroom, thin floral curtains and seriously, seriously creaky floors. My room was at the top of the stairs and one person passing sounded like a heard. Needless to say, I didn't get a great night's sleep. I can't comment on the breakfast because I chose to stay in my bed to try and catch up on my sleep.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Princess8562, Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review about your recent visit to us at the hotel. We're sorry to hear about the noise issues during your stay, by the description you've given it seems like your in the "original" part of the hotel. This is an area we've been looking into in regards to modernising, and from your review we can see it's something that we need to do sooner rather than later. We do hope that you'll come and see us again, and we will endeavour to make your experience more enjoyable.

"A sad end to a sad day"

05/08/2016

My Mother booked a room for my Grandmothers wake and was charged £10.95pp for the privilege. The eta was 2.45pm but we actually arrived at 2.40pm. We were promised a manager would be on hand to greet us - there was no one there. We were promised tea, coffee and squash on arrival - there was none available. The bar, unsurprisingly was open and fully manned though. My Mother was already understandably in a very distressed state following the funeral and then was forced to try to find someone to sort out the mess. The room was absolutely freezing and as the average age of the mourners was about 80 and it wasn't a warm day, this was totally unnecessary. The numerous request for this to be turned off were refused. When the food finally arrived, all that it consisted of was a few platter of the worst looking sandwiches I've ever seen and some large chunks of tray bake cakes. The sandwiches all had indistinguishable fillings with nothing at all recognisable. Someone commented that they looked as if someone had just thrown them together using grey fillings. There wasn't a garnish to be seen to make them look anywhere near appetising which resulted in the majority of them going to waste. How you can justify charging £10.95pp is beyond me. Due to the freezing temperature in the room, the majority of the elderly mourners left very early which is hardly a fitting send of to my 101 year old Grandmother and she would have been very disappointed.

If you are looking to stay in Reading for leisure or business, you will find that the Calcot Hotel is the place to stay. The Calcot Hotel is very welcoming and all of the Staff that work there are very helpful and friendly. The rooms are always clean, comfortable and pleasant. You will enjoy your stay. If you are considering the Calcot hotel for a special event like a Wedding or Birthday party, I highly recommend that you choose this hotel. I recently got married at the Calcot and also hosted my Wife's 30th Birthday party, both of which exceeded my expectations. It is very clear throughout my many dealings with the Calcot Hotel that all of the staff that work there are brilliant at their jobs. I would like to especially thank Andrew for everything he has done for us. Andrew is the best Manager of a business that I have ever met. Thank you to everyone that works at the Calcot Hotel, I really appreciate all of your hard work and dedication.

"Weekend Break"

04/08/2016

Stayed here for a weekend as we were visiting friends nearby. Our room was clean and was in good decorate order, the Bathroom needs updating esp the Shower as it was a fixed one so was unable to direct it also was unable to was my hair over the bath. The flooring and bath panel needs replacing as both had faults. The windows do open wider than mentioned in previous review there is a lever you can press and the Wifi worked brilliant. Staff were very pleasant and friendly and very helpful. Sadly the food on Friday 29th was not that brilliant but understandable as they had a couple of hen parties and were quite busy. Would we stay again.... yes as quite reasonably price didn't have the breakfast as I found it rather expensive for what I would eat .

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi VintageAl, Thanks for taking the time to leave us a review after your recent stay with us. We're sorry to hear of your upset with the meal on the 29th in our restaurant. Despite there being other parties going on our food shouldn't suffer because of this, so we're saddened to hear that you didn't experience our best. In regards to breakfast we can charge for smaller items if you don't feel like having the full breakfast, but this is something you can enquire about on your next visit. Many of our bathrooms and bedrooms are going through an updating currently so I'm sure that the flooring issues you've experience will be rectified. Kind Regards Best Western Calcot Hotel

02/08/2016

Conveniently located the hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Rooms were comfortable and clean. Rooms on the front do suffer from some road noise, our rear facing room was quiet, we enjoyed a good nights sleep. Breakfast was pretty good but pricey at £10.95 a head

"Beware the weekend food"

02/08/2016

Went on a Friday, booked the restaurant and we all had the worst meal we had for years. I had a bad experiance once in a Benidorm in an all inclusive - this was worse. I have had some really good food here in past years but on the 29/7/16 it was shocking.

"Wedding"

My daughter had her wedding & reception here, could not have had a better time. The staff went beyond what was expected assisting us at every point, guiding us at what is a stressful time. On the day they advised, coordinated & soothed nervous people while still being professionally low key. I would have no hesitation in recommending them for your wedding day.

"Good value"

30/07/2016

We were going to a do nearby so wanted somewhere where we could walk from. We booked it and then read some of the reviews. We found the staff very friendly. We had travelled from Devon so had allowed extra time in case there was hold ups on the motorway so got there 2 hours early. Our room wasn't ready so they gave us another one. We heard no noise from the wedding disco and had a good night's sleep. The room was hot when we arrived but cooled down with the window open. The shower was good and the room recently decorated.

This hotel is very basic . Rooms small and dated . The outside looks a lot more pleasant than the inside !! Ok if you just want somewhere cheap to stay but don't stay here if you want something a bit special . There is far better out there for the price! Breakfast was very good tho and I asked the chef to cook me a well cooked egg which was not a problem .

I am a Pom now living with my Australian wife in Melbourne but making periodic trips back to the UK. This was July/August 2016 and staying in the the UK and Moscow for business/pleasure. The Cacot hotel stood as as a pleasure for the informal and helpful single night we were there. Not air-conditioned but staff found cooler room and fans to save our bacon after a very hot and exhasting drive on Britain's crowded roads!

"Disappointing"

25/07/2016

The photos of the hotel are much nicer than the actual place! If you just want somewhere to sleep for the night then this hotel will be ok ....just avoid rooms 32 & 33. There is a noisy water tank above these rooms which kept us awake all night. The manager did move us the next day into a much quieter and nicer room (bed was much bigger) in what seemed to be a newer part of the hotel.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Rosemarie M, I was sorry to learn of your disturbed nights sleep, the area you were staying in has recently had a new boiler system fitted and we were unaware of this issue until you notified us during your stay, we will defiantly look into your points raised and action as necessary. I was pleased to hear that the Duty Manager was able to rectify your dissatisfaction and room moved you. We are disappointed you felt the need to write a review as a full apology was given during your stay and a full refund for the first night was offered and you accepted. Great location. We had a very comfortable stay. Lovely room and helpful staff. We requested a fan, as it was very hot and this was sorted straight away. Breakfast was yummy and great value (so much to choose from). The only downside was our bathroom; it was a awkward layout.

Have stayed here before but pleasantly surprised the rooms have had a makeover. Don't think there are lifts as none on my way to my room. Reception staff friendly. Very quiet inside but looks out onto main road so can be sometimes. Very close to sainsburys and ikea.

"Convenient Location...Surprisingly Quiet"

21/07/2016

This is an older style hotel that is beginning to show its age now. However, the staff work hard to keep the hotel clean and tidy whilst providing a friendly, helpful welcome. Decent free WiFi. Great buffet breakfast that had plenty of freshly cooked hot food and importantly, nice hot plates. Excellent breakfast service, among the best I have experienced anywhere. Rooms OK, small TV, firm mattress and small bathroom, but everything worked and was nice and clean too. My room was on the main road and was surprisingly quiet.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi chrisbQ5442MH, Thank you for leaving us a review on Tripadvisor after your recent visit. The hotel is shortly going to be going through a renovation so the age will not show as it does now. It's great to read that you enjoyed your breakfast with us, that'll make the chefs very happy to read. 20/07/2016

Stayed there for just one night. The reception was very friendly and yet professional. Room was nice, although not the largest we stayed in on our trip but much better than the hotel we had in London. Room was clean and bed was comfortable. Bathroom was also very nice. Breakfast was very good and choice and quantities were in abundance. You have the choice of cold or hot breakfast. We also had dinner the evening of our arrival. There was a wedding being celebrated in the main dinning area so we had access to a smaller room indoor, with no access to the outdoors. Food was good. Good price-quality ratio.

17/07/2016

This hotel was expensive for the type of the facilities provided. The room was very dark due to a small window. No air conditioning. Window opened only a small gap. Soundproofing poor. Kept awake by guest or someone above walking around late at night and very early in the morning. Restaurant disappointing. Paid a lot of money for main course only to find out that vegetables were all extra.

"Clean and modern room."

3
15/07/2016

This is a functional hotel for the business traveller, not for people on a romantic holiday. The rooms are modern and stylish with all mod cons. The restaurant is surprisingly nice and the the food plentiful, normally I am used to reheats microwave food in these type of hotels, but I was pleasantly surprised. The on,y thing that let the hotel down was the breakfast, I arrived about 0900 for breakfast and clearly what was left was cooked a few hours earlier. The waiters seemed very disinterested and went for a cigarette a couple of times when we were there and when they were not busy they were texting on their phones. But not to dwell on the negatives the hotel is fine and what you would expect for a hotel in this location. I would stay here again but would give breakfast a miss.

"A good and fair priced Best Western"

13/07/2016

Date of this stay 12th July 16 (which is my first stay here) Room 87 My ongoing experience of the hotel is as follows: 1) Arrival was straightforward using the Sat Nav instructions from the hotel 2) There is a large free car park that surrounds the hotel at the front 3) On arrival at the hotel the check in staff were pleasant and friendly 4) I received access to the free WIFI throughout my stay 5) All area's including the bedrooms were always well kept, tidy and clean. 6) My room No 87 was clean and well maintained (see the pictures) 7) The hotel is of the typical twee and older style hotel that you expect from the mainstream brand. From its quaint Italian rustic dining room to its 1980's styled bed rooms. It did however have fully modernized bathrooms. 8) The hotel is about 100m away from a BP petrol station who sell snacks, it's about a ½ to a mile walk to the local Sainsbury's 9) I enjoyed my evening meal (see pictures), the chef is excellent, my poached egg starter was perfectly cooked. I stay in hotels about 50-70 nights a year so I was delighted to see a number of healthy options on the menu, once again congratulations to the chef, I plumed for the healthy quinoa salad topped with a rare steak, the steak was excellent, but the quinoa lacked that flavor punch, it needed to be cooked in a stock with a dash of wine, perhaps some citrus and a few local herbs to make it perfect for me ( I'm a confirmed foody so like to share the love) 10) Breakfast was a traditional hot and cold buffet selection, however one of the main reasons I stay at Best Westerns is the freshly cooked breakfast option that they offer, that option was not available here, in particular the option to have kippers, or smoked haddock with poached eggs (a massive favorite of mine when staying in Best Westerns). However once again the chefs poached buffet eggs were spot on, but there was to be no fish, he has a real talent here and he's a great cook. You can tell that that the hotel does care about its breakfast as they serve really good quality produce not catering quality rubbish, for example they have a whole real honeycomb for breakfast that you scoop out real live honey from and a great cold meat and cheese selection. 11) Location, was ideally located for my visit close to the motorway, but it's out of town if that's what you need (about 3-4 miles) 12) Check out, was straight forward and hassle free In summary the hotel scores 9/10 for a good Best Western branded hotel that needs the lovely fresh cooked menu to score higher.

We stayed over Saturday night on 9th July. My husband sister-in-law had her 30th party. This was our second stay as she got married in the venue last year. The room we stayed in excellent. The room was spacious, bed was comfy, the room we stayed in have a decent size bath and shower. Spare towels, pillows, iron and ironing board were in the room already. The hotel is next door to a petrol station and a 20 minutes walk takes you to Sainsbury's. The hotel is about 3 miles out from Reading town centre. The hotel bar and lounge is well furnished and for the real ale drinkers they keep an excellent pint of Courage best bitter on. The hotel breakfast was very good (not excellent ran out of hash browns) as you can have a continental or cooked breakfast. Staff are friendly and polite.

We stayed in this hotel as it was close to a friends wedding. We had 5 rooms between all of us and the staff was very very rude to all. Spoke to us like crap. The beds was rock hard and we all had bad necks from the bricks of the pillow! Defiantly would never stay here again!!

We attended a family wedding and was very pleasantly surprised the day was organised like a military operation leaving nothing to chance. If you are considering getting married go and have a look 1st as I'm sure like all of us you will be very pleasantly surprised. The staff in this hotel made the whole experience truly remarkable, with special thanks to Theresa who not only made us feel very welcome she took it upon herself to look after a wedding guest with mental health issues for his 2 night stay. The hotel itself was clean the food both at the wedding and breakfast the following day was of exceptional quality. Thank you to everybody at the Calcot for a thoroughly enjoyable experience

Hello fxlx2003, Thank you for your lovely comments after your stay with us for a family wedding. It's nice to read that you could see that we run our weddings to a high standard, always great to see when we have pleasantly surprised someone. I'll make sure our kitchen staff are aware of the praise towards the food, and I'll make sure to give Teresa a special mention as she's a fantastic member of staff. We thank you again for staying with us while attending the wedding and we hope that we will see you again soon. Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel

"Close to the M4 a little old fashioned but nice"

I used to stay at this hotel in the 1980's and although improvements have been made it still has some old fashioned charm. My room was clean and specious with a strong free WiFi signal. I had my evening meal in the restaurant from the set menu which was good value money and although not haute cuisine it was very good. Breakfast was buffet style with hot and cold options. There is a small bar and free parking. Excellent place to stay if on business in the area as the price for the room was much cheaper than other chain hotels in the region.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Travelsanman, Thank you for leaving us feedback after your stay with us. We're glad to see that despite modern changes throughout the hotel you could still feel our old fashioned charm coming through. It's great to read you enjoyed your breakfast and evening meal with us in our restaurant too. We hope it you'll come back to visit us again soon Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel

The hotel is easy to find. Free parking at the front of the hotel. The reception was efficient. The room was well present with everything you need. The decor is dated and could do with a refresh. Breakfast was good. Unusually (I've never seen it before) they had a big slab of honeycomb for breakfast which I thought was a nice touch. I would stay again.

This hotel is very clean and comfortable. Rooms are well equipped, I am partially disabled walking wise. When booked the accessible room did not register. However the lady behind the reception went out of her way to find us a room on the first floor. Also I think was the assistant manager or manager, found us a lovely room with a shower, although there was 2 weddings and the hotel was so busy. Nothing was too much trouble. We were very pleased with the whole stay, and will be going there again. Thank you all the staff at cal it.

Hello Hazel C, Thank you for leaving us a review after your recent stay with us. It's always lovely to come and visit the Grandkids, so I hope that you got to spend some quality time with them and the family. I'm very glad to see that the receptionist and hotel management made sure that we got you a room that was easily accessible for you, despite the hotel being busy with private functions we treat all our guests equally, so I'm glad to see that this happened during your stay. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel.

Average hotel, with slightly dated décor. single bed reasonably comfortable and food served to a good standard. short on plug sockets to charge my phone, and plug my lap top into, as this was a business trip. Overall ok, and not the worst place I have stayed.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello moriannabarriman, Thanks for leaving us feedback after your recent stay at the hotel, by the sound of your review it seems like you stayed in the original part of the hotel which has recently had bedroom and bathroom make overs. I'm sorry to hear that there wasn't enough plugs in your room, we do try to make sure guests have all they need in their bedrooms, so i'm sorry if this caused you to be unable to work while with us. We hope that you'll stay with us again if your in the area for business, it's worth asking about our standard rooms, as they're bigger rooms with double beds, plenty more plug sockets too! Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel.

As a solo female traveller, I am always very aware of safety when staying in new places. The staff at this hotel were very kind and thoughtful to me. Staff were very helpful and I got the bathroom with walk in shower that I requested. Everywhere was spotlessly clean and comfortable.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Ann M, Safety and security of our guests is high on our priorities list, so we'll always make sure that our guests feel this when they're with us, so i'm happy to see this came across to you during your stay. I'm happy to see that we adhered to your request of a walk in shower, these are recently updated bathrooms, and have been very popular with our guests. We hope that you'll come back to stay with us again if your in the area. Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel.

"Maintains high standards"

29/06/2016

I have been visiting this hotel on business approx once a year over a number of years and it never dissapoints. The standard of the rooms and the cleanliness is second to none. The management moved me rooms as they were having functions on both nights of my stay and were concerned I would be disturbed. In doing this they changed me from a very pretty single room to a double which was very comfortable and less stairs for someone with a dodgy knee. Once again I enjoyed all my meals. The staff make you feel very welcome and I will this time give a special mention to the cleaning staff spotless well done.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello janeyjohn001, Lovely to read such fantastic comments about our hotel. I'm very happy to see that the reception team made a good judgement call in moving your room to make sure that you'd not be disturbed by the ongoing functions at the hotel. We always aim to make sure our guests are happy with their experience with us, and having a good nights sleep is always important, and less steps helps out all of us with dodgy knees! I'll make sure that our head housekeeper knows that his staff are doing an excellent job and maintaining the high standards in which we work towards. I'm sure we will see you again! Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel.

"Much Better on Pictures"

28/06/2016

I'm not sure whether I was just unfortunate with my room allocation, but I wasn't very impressed. The pictures on the website looked lovely but everything from the impression driving up to the hotel were just a little disappointing. Plenty of free parking. Check in was fine, staff very friendly. The hallway was a little confusing, and when I got into my room it smelt quite foisty. There's a well stocked selection of tea & coffee, but every single thing was a random brand I'd never heard of and it wasn't very nice. There was also only one packet of biscuits. There was a wedding with a very loud disco on til after midnight which made sleeping any earlier impossible. There are toiletries in the bathroom, shampoo but no conditioner and the others were half used. There was a bath which ran very quickly. There was a hairdryer on the wall in the bathroom, and also one in the desk drawer, and also an ironing board. There was a fan in the room which was useful as it was very warm. TV was good with good reception and good free wifi. Breakfast in the morning was excellent, great selection, friendly service. The have teas, coffee (lactose free milk which I wish I'd read before ordering my drink! Standard hot food, warm croissants, cheese & ham, toast, yoghurt, juices & some fancy looking honey. Not a bad stay but I was expecting a bit more.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Mrs_Fer, Let me start by thanking you for leaving us a review after your recent visit. I'm saddened to hear that you didn't find the impression of the hotel, or your room to be like what you'd seen online, without knowing where and what you'd seen i'd be unable to pass a judgement on this. We've got 3 different types of rooms throughout the hotel, so it's possible that you'd seen a different room style to the one you'd booked. I'm sorry to hear that the function that was happening during your stay disrupted your sleep, our functions run until 12pm, occasionally 12.30pm but we do try our best to make sure that people who aren't attending these functions are not disturbed by them. On a more positive note, it's great to see that the room and it's amenities were to your liking, despite the tea and coffee brands, which is something we could change if requested, and that you had an excellent breakfast with us in the morning. We're hoping that if your in the area again you'd give us a 2nd chance to improve on your opinion. Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel.

27/06/2016

Not the most cheeriest of visits. But nevertheless they put on a good buffet. Hot and cold food. Varying from sandwiches to quiche and samosa to spring rolls. And sausages that were amazing!! All went down well and well done to the staff there on a difficult day.

"Lovely hotel"

27/06/2016

We just spent two nights at this hotel to attend a wedding nearby. The rooms were spotless with tea and coffee facilities provided and also a decent hairdryer. The bed was very comfortable and the modern bathroom equipped with toiletries. The staff were all very friendly and helpful and we were served an excellent breakfast with a big choice of cooked or cold dishes. The restaurant is a very pleasant and bright room and the bar area is also welcoming and comfortable with additional seating outside weather permitting! I would highly recommend this hotel.

"Lovely hotel, excellent staff"

26/06/2016

My wife, son and daughter and myself spent two nights at the Calcot Hotel as we were in the area for a family wedding. We had two twin rooms which both had, unusually, two single beds rather that double beds. This actually suited me as I was sharing a room with my 21 year old son! Our room was very good with a small fully equipped bathroom with shower. We had breakfast both days and this was buffet style and was excellent. The food was very hot which is sometimes not the case with buffet food and we had as much tea and coffee as we wanted. The staff in the dining room were very attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The hotel itself is a lovely building and the dining area was being used for a wedding when we got there. I would consider it to be an excellent venue for a medium sized wedding as the dining area is a good size but nicely informal. We had a peek into the room where the ceremony was taking place and it looked fabulous. A few of our family members were staying in the hotel and there are areas where you can sit, chat and have a drink. There is also seating outside which was good on the day we left as the weather was fine and warm. The hotel staff were all brilliant but a special mention must go to the receptionist, Rose Webster, who was great. She arranged our taxis on both evenings, was really friendly every time I spoke to her and even sorted out a plaster for my cut finger - Employee of the Month Award please! All on all a very nice hotel and I would definitely stay there again if I was in the area.

"Mercury and May Tribute Evening"

22/06/2016

I went with a group of visually impaired adults and their friends to last Friday's tribute evening. I was able to choose our seating area prior to the night, which ensured our members had the best possible viewing experience. The tables were very attractively laid out, the meal choices were excellent and the food was delicious - very good quality and quantity and piping hot. We also enjoyed the 2 for 1 drinks offer prior to the meal. Service was first class. The show was great fun and the performers also looked like they were enjoying themselves. We were made to feel very welcome and will definitely be arranging another trip there for our members in the not too distant future. Everyone in our party thought it was very good value for money - so we will be back! Thank you to everyone at The Calcot Hotel for a great evening.

I was dreading staying here, it had all the hallmarks of a 'Faulty Towers' experience, but, it was not the case whatsoever. The staff were fantastic, I'm not sure if they have organised training but whoever is responsible for it should be commended. The food was pretty good, I was pleasantly surprised. They clearly knew the way to my heart, by serving up what I would class as 'proper' portions. My room was nothing special but served its purpose and I couldn't complain at all.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Peter B, Thank you for leaving us a review after your recent stay. I'm glad that we broke you ideas of us give you the experience of "faulty towers", I see we made the right choice in removing Basil and Manuel! Our staff are always willing to help out guests and to go the extra mile to make sure our guests feel looked after while with us. We're also pleased to see that you found us to have "proper" portions sizes, nothing worse than a small meal! We will hope to see you again in the near future! Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel

"DO NOT TAKE A SMALL ROOM"

3
10/06/2016

The hotel on first arrival was good, the room seemed 'ok' we were told that it was small room but IT WAS VERY SMALL and the bed was a small double! However after a good evening meal and retiring to our room we opened the windows for air and then we found the problem. The air conditioning plant was right outside our room but the room had no air conditioning. Not a good nights sleep. Food overall was expectable and breakfast had a good range.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Colin B, We're sorry to hear of the problems you've mentioned that happened during your stay. This isn't an issue that has been brought to our attention before but it is something that we will look into. With regards to the room size, it is sold as a small standard due to its size but we find that many people are quite happy there for a night or two, we do have standard size rooms, and we also endeavor to make sure our guests enjoy their stay, so will reallocate people if we can. On the positive side, it's great to see you had a meal in our restaurant and found our breakfast to have a good variety of items available. We hope that you'll stay with us again BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel

My husband and I stayed here for a week before being posted overseas whilst we packed up our life in the UK, and I am very glad of the options we were given we stayed here. Our room was clean, tidy and perfect for our stay, the food we had was very good, all the staff were lovely and couldn't do enough for us and what was really stressful time for us was made much easier due to the service we received whilst staying here, coupled with being very good value for money I would strongly recommend this is hotel to anyone.

Effortless booking, check in, excellent service. Nicely decorated and clean hotel. Only negative would be the disappointing quality of an evening meal (braised steak) overloaded with salt so as to be almost inedible. The location was ideal for our visit, taking in the local area.

Hello John, Firstly let me thank you for leaving us a review after your recent stay with us. I'm sorry to hear of the disappointment of your evening meal in our restaurant, we usually get very good comments about our meals so I'll inform out chefs to look into this. Stayed here for one night after a wedding near by. We had originally booked another hotel near by which badly let us down (A week prior to our stay they cancelled our reservation) Best Western were fantastic in helping us and the rest of our party (14) to accommodate us. The room and bed were comfortable for one night. Although the bathroom was small it was adequate and served its purpose. The buffet breakfast was very good value and had a reasonable choice for cooked breakfast, there was also a small selection for a continental breakfast. Staff were friendly and helpful. Thank you Best Western for looking after us.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Sarah D, It's great to hear that we were able to come to the rescue after you had been let down by another hotel. We hope that you and your party had a lovely time at the wedding. It'd be great to see you all again. Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel

"Old, pricey sometimes & terrible restaurant"

2
29/05/2016

I have stayed in Best Western Calcot Hotel for several weeks within few months while being on the training & before moving to Reading. 1. Room(s): for various prices (from £60 up to £100+ a night) I was getting different rooms (double or single bed) in different parts of the hotel - it doesn't mean for smaller room there was a lower price - it happened to be opposite. Rooms were clean but felt used (especially bathrooms). Depending on the side of the building rooms were dark. 2. Service: staff very friendly & helpful. 3. Facilities: food in the restaurant was fat & very average. Priced between £10 - £15 per meal. I had been using it because there is not much choice around the hotel (unless you enjoy McDonald's at retail park nearby). Bar serves beer & drinks, you can watch a game. Not good for business meetings as it's dark in there and I was feeling depressingly. 4. Location: if you are not going to Reading town centre then it's good alternative. Convenient location very close to J12 of M4 motorway. Overall: 2/5 - definitely not for nice weekend stay. I would rather use it for a quick stay between next journey and I wouldn't expect much. Overpriced but it's close to London.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to write a comprehensive review of our family run hotel. It is good to hear how well you were treated during your stay and that our staff were friendly and helpful. We were also pleased that you found our rooms clean and presentable. As you pointed out we have a wide selection of rooms at various prices at the hotel. The rooms do vary in size and are offered at variable prices depending on days of the week and business trends. Our rooms are often considered good value for money in the area. We have just 4 single rooms from our compliment of 78 but, as did happen with yourself, we do upgrade where we can to offer larger double rooms. We are obviously disappointed you did not enjoy our menu. Had you mentioned this to our staff we would have endeavoured to find you something more to your taste. Thank you for returning to our hotel on several occasions even though everything was not to your satisfaction. Kind Regards BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel

It's on par with most standard Best Western hotels. Great location off M4. Modern on the outside and oldie worldie in a good way on the inside. Nice cosy bar and large restaurant with a decent menu. Good buffet breakfast with great service from the staff. The room was reasonable and large enough with all the usual bits and pieces. The bathroom was modern with a lovely powerful shower it's gets a 9.5. All very clean and tidy all at a good price for the area. Ample parking too couldn't really find faults on this visit.

09/05/2016

Staying here overnight on business travel. The room itself is comfortable though very basic and dated. Dinner was overpriced and disappointing. The starter was awful and the steak consisted of just the steak, chips and 1 tomato for £16. You would get more value and a nicer stay at a Premier Inn or Travelodge for the same if not cheaper price.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Andy O. Firstly let me thank you for leaving us feedback after your stay with us, It's disappointing to see that you didn't enjoy your meal with us. Our menu is very popular and competitively prices, and we get many compliments on it. With regards to Premier Inn & Travelodge, I can't comment on their pricing systems but we've many guests who prefer our "personal touch" on the hotel rather than the chain hotels. This is a very nice hotel, all of the staff were very friendly and helpful and cheerful. We stayed for one night as it was for a special birthday party in Reading. On returning just before midnight the night porter welcomed us back, went to the bar and we had a very nice drink to wind down before going to bed. The bedroom was clean and comfortable, the shower head could be lower and the soap container over the was basin was empty. You can hear noise from other rooms but not to bad and can be expected in a lovely building like this. Saturday afternoon we had coffee and sandwiches in the lounge area. Fresh and nicely presented. Thought could be a better selection of snacks as only sandwiches were available. The lounge was comfortable and relaxing, not all singing and dancing and noisy like some hotels, made it very nice. Sunday breakfast, again staff really helpful and friendly, the food supplies gave a nice selection of both cold and hot food. The hot breakfast basic, poached and fried eggs, bacon, baked bean, tomatoes, hash browns, plenty of toast tea and coffee. Altogether a very enjoyable stay in a traditional hotel.

We arrived to a warm welcome and found a clean comfortable room with a good hair dryer (not one of the tiny travel type), which was a pleasant surprise. We ate at the hotel and the food was good for the price, which was average for this type of hotel. I are sirloin steak, it was around £14 .The waitress was really friendly. Breakfast was very good. The barman was cheery and polite to the crowd of us who were drinking to celebrate a wedding the following day.

Stayed here one night. Check in was efficient and helpful. Bedroom on the ground floor was ok - view of the rear yard - but comfortable, extra pillows in the wardrobe good. Small / compact bathroom but well supplied and warm. Breakfast not included in our rate but tea/coffee available in the room.Seem to get a better deal booking direct with the hotel. Check out staff busy so did not ask about our stay or say goodbye.Easy to find off the M4, plenty of parking and location convenient to our evening function - even if the local cab driver charged us £10 for a 1..4 mile trip at 7 in the evening.

"Excellent staff, great room, great breakfast"

20/04/2016

Despite arriving after 11pm the check in staff were cheerful & helpful. The room was large, had everything a business traveller needs (or a tourist for that matter), was quiet, comfortable and extremely clean. The bathroom was small but again extremely clean and with decent shower so overall no complaints. Breakfast was all it should be, made better by outstanding restaurant service, advertised as a buffet but actually served to the table. In summary, great quality and value for money, an enjoyable place to stay so I'll be coming back.

We booked for two nights a few days ago for visiting a relative who had been taken into the local hospice, we thought this would be near and handy and liked the reviews. We had room 92, double bedded room with a walk in shower which was a request from us for health reasons.... This room did not have a view, but didn't bother us as we were only here for one reason, to say goodbye to someone at the hospice, this room was nice and quiet which was good..... It was clean and the housekeeping staff were very good... We arrived on Sunday afternoon, after booking in we were advised that we needed to be at the hospice sooner rather than later..sadly our relative passed away early hours the next day, anyway as we were not needed to stay longer, we asked reception if we could cancel that night as we really wanted to get home again, and we were given a refund for the night not spent there, this was very kind of the hotel as they didn't have any legal obligation to do this, but this was very good of them, and it a kindness we will not forget. When we return for the funeral we will certainly be booking again, and have recommended to the family that it would be a good idea to hold the wake at the calcot hotel too.. Breakfast was excellent and the waiting on staff very polite and helpful. Thank you once again, we are back Home in Norfolk now..

Dear Susie1950 Thank you so much for taking the time to write such a lovely review. Staff were great, in the bar, restaurant and reception . corridor leading to our room stank of BO. First night the TV did not work. Lamp in the room did not work. Cleanliness was average in the room. Only stayed in this hotel while having the heating fixed at home. I've paid less in a local chain and paid less

Stayed here whilst working in Reading. Hotel is well placed for access into Reading and the surrounding area but could benefit from some modernisation. I wouldn't recommend the Restaurant as I didn't feel it offered good value for money.

I came here as my daughter was here on business so I was also in the area so instead of taking two cars we took the one . I went into the hotel to sit and have a cold drink and a panni and was served by a lady in the bar area called Christine. I must say what a plesant and helpful woman. She waited on me with such a friendly manner . If u was coming again to reading I would deffinately come here . It is easy to find from the M4 and so easy to stay here and get to the centre of reading. For business meetings this is such a perfect hotel. Thankful again to the lady called Christine.

We cannot fault this hotel. We were attending a family funeral, so having stayed here previously having had a good experience and reading recent reviews decided to book it. Probably the main thing was the location conveniently situated close to the motorway. We also were meeting friends there and the staff made us a good selection of sandwiches for afternoon tea. The receptionist was very friendly in welcoming us to the hotel. The room was very clean and of a good standard and service. We ate in the restaurant the first evening, with good service and good food. The second evening we had room service, as we just wanted to chill, as we had a very tiring day. The food was on time and served by a friendly member of staff. We would not hesitate to return in the future. The first morning we were treated to fresh eggs cooked to order, as it wasn't very busy. This was a lovely surprise. It is self service mainly and there is a good variety of fruit, cereals and hot plates for cooked food. Finally, there is free wifi which is quick in the bedrooms.

We used this hotel en route to stay with family. The staff were very friendly and amenities were very clean. There was a 60s/70s evening taking place that evening. Fortunately our room was far away enough not to hear the music but the walls are very thin and we could hear a group of ladies getting ready in the next room, they were very loud. We ate in the restaurant but had to wait a while to be seated as the waitress was sorting out someone's meal and taking it back to the kitchen. Decided to go for Fish & chips as we thought that a safe bet - wrong! Chips were very brown but soft and the fish was very over cooked. Went for coffee in bar afterwards and asked for decaf from the machine, after quite a wait we were presented with a teapot of instant coffee. The barman was very apologetic and did take it off the bill. We were early for breakfast which was buffet style and was ok but the toast was soft and cold. The waitress did offer to get fresh when I mentioned it but by then we had finished anyway. Don't think we will be rushing back for a return visit.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Purplemulberry, Thank you for review your recent stay with us. It's great to see that you found are staff friendly and helpful throughout, and the amenities were too your standard too. I'm sorry to hear about your disappointment with the meal you had in our restaurant, however there was no record of this being mentioned to a duty manager as we'd have looked to remove it from the bill for you or to replace it with another meal. We hope that you'll come back again to give us a chance to redeem ourselves!

"Raised above average by breakfast, WiFi and staff. "

18/03/2016

This is just an average Best Western on the outskirts of Reading. It's raised above average by really good wifi (Yes Hilton it puts your poor connection to shame!) A good breakfast buffet selection and staff who are attentive and friendly. It's not a luxury hotel but for its 3 star rating it does very admirably. And in a few respects puts 4 star establishments to shame.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Lookeypook, Thank you for leaving us a review about your stay. We do pride ourselves a high 3 star hotel so it's nice to see that you noticed this effort that we have put in. It's lovely to see that you think our wifi put's the Hilton to shame! I'm hopeful that we will see you again soon!

"Great Night Out"

14/03/2016

Attended the Comedy Night on Saturday and had a fabulous time. Food and service second to non with the added bonus of being served by Basil Fawlty himself, aided by Frank Spencer and Patsy from Ad Fab!!! Only downside were the few guests who decided they would rather talk than enjoy the entertainment which meant at times we could not hear what was being said. Great disco afterwards with some great movers on the dance floor! Looking forward to our next visit.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello hamish45, we're glad to hear that you enjoyed the comedy dinner show that we had at the hotel. many guests have commented on how fun it was to be seated and served by Basil Fawlty! Sorry to hear that your experience was damped slightly by others, but glad to hear it didn't effect the dancing afterwards! we hope to see you at one of our many other functions in the future.

"Weird training..."

2
02/03/2016

Not recommended unless as a last resort. Room was clean but shower was very weak and the sink didn't drain. On checkin my card was used to pay for both my colleague and I but without stating so. On checkout same thing happened and bill had to be reworked several times and the receptionist couldn't confirm by how much my card had been debited. Tried to set up a tab but kept getting bits of paper to sign until I refused to do so (why take a swipe and annoy someone like this). Didn't have breakfast and the restaurant shut before stated closing time so could only fix up a sandwich. I cannot recommend this place frankly - Best Western is NOT a chain as each hotel is operated independently and the Calcot rather poorly

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Andy Thank you for your review, we appreciate any feedback positive or negative so we can review our training and guest's experience. I have tried to look into your comments, however there is no mention of any complaints made regarding your issues in the duty manager handover documentation. I have spoken to the receptionist that were on duty who advise me that they unfortunately made a mistake on check in, you were charged for 2 rooms for 1 night as originally booked, however there had been an amendment which was not picked up on check in hence the further payment required on check out for the extra night. The receptionist explained the situation on check out and you settled the outstanding balance. On no occasion do we take payment without authority of the guest. It is standard procedure in the majority of hotels that any purchases charged to the room needs to be signed for by the guest therefore safe guarding the hotel and the guest.

"Handy Location close to M4"

29/02/2016

I have been to this Hotel for many functions but this was my first overnight stay. On the plus side - the staff were all very friendly. The room was clean but quite small for a Twin room. The bathroom was spacious but dated. The complimentary shower gel/soap were attached in dispensers on the wall. Problem was if you were having a bath - the dispenser was high up at the other end by the shower. There were no complimentary face cloths in the bathroom either. In the bedroom there were no complimentary bath robes or slippers which from a 3 star AA hotel I would have expected. Also would have expected some complimentary bottles of water. The walls are paper thin and clearly not soundproofed. The breakfast was a little disappointing - cold plates - barely warm food - no hash browns or mushrooms. All in all its the little things that make it memorable. Wouldn't rush back to stay over.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for posting your first review on Trip Advisor. Firstly, can I say how delighted I am that you have returned many times for our popular functions. Our entertainment programme attract many visitors and it's always good to hear from guests who have attended on several occasions. Your compliments on the cleanliness and the staff are most appreciated but I am obviously disappointed to hear that you did not enjoy other aspects of your visit. The Best Western Calcot Hotel is an approved AA 3 Star hotel passing regular inspections. 3 Star hotels throughout the United Kingdom do not have the requirement for Bath Robes or Slippers. Soundproofing is certainly an issue in many hotels and unfortunately and we are not immune to occasional comments from guests in this area. We are currently taking steps to rectify this situation and hopefully this will be solved in due course. With regards to breakfast I am a little taken aback by your comments of cold plates and no hash browns. Hash browns are on our everyday breakfast menu and we have a plate warmer therefore you can understand my surprise. If you do decide to stay over again please contact me directly and I would be pleased to meet and discuss these points directly with you. Thank you once again for your kind support.

This is a small hotel in a small town of calcot...very nice to stay for a day or two...the hotel serves breakfast...the rooms are small and basic..though the surroundings are good..this is a budget hotel in best western chain of hotels...

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for posting a review on Trip Advisor. It's lovely to read that you think we're a nice hotel to stay in, along with breakfast, we also have our onsite restaurant that serves dinner in the evenings too. We've a variety of room types within the hotel, you've described it as "small and basic", which would lead me to believe you stayed in our original part of the hotel, which is currently going through a refurbishment to update these rooms. We hope that you'll come and see us again in the future.

"Traditional style hotel where staff make an effort"

3
26/02/2016

I found this hotel to be functional and it worked for me because it was in a good location and had easy parking. It was a basic, but comfortable bedroom with no frills, and a functional bathroom which had recently been refurbished. The radiator in the bathroom and the radiator in the bedroom seemed to be on the same heating circuit, so you had heating in either one or the other location, but not both at the same time. What the hotel did not have in charm, or modern facilities, it made up for in terms of service. The staff are attentive and helpful, and whilst you can clearly see they follow a strict process (how they show you to the table, tell you about the meal options etc) none the less it was a pleasurable experience because you are treated like a person and not an inconvenience. Food was basic, but did the job of providing nourishment. Don't expect any extra frills. There was free wifi but no leisure facilities of any kind. However for those that can bear to go outdoors there is a good park (go right along towards the M4) nearby for running around, so that is a good alternative. I would stay in it again if I needed to be in the area.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review

"A nice place to stay outside reading with easy parking"

25/02/2016

We stayed at this hotel for one night and chose it for its easy to get to location outside of reading. The hotel was clean and the reception star helpful. The WIFI was good and the rooms comfortable although the shower was too hot and we had to take baths instead but that was ok. It is very easy to get to without getting caught in central reading traffic and is about 15 mons drive outside of reading but just off the M4 junction. The rooms are situated over a few levels, you don't need the dreaded key cards to get to the rooms as this can be nightmare when you have left it in the room with your other half. Sainsbury is located a few minutes away so it is very easy to nip out to to get snacks and breakfast in the morning - overall a great hotel and great value for money.

"Party"

20/02/2016

Whilst this review is for a party, I have to add that I have used Best Western Calcot for Christmas work parties, suppliers accommodation and attended New Years and numerous party events. All of which gave us the confidence to book a double family party. The reception staff are always welcoming, as are all the waiting, bar and room service staff. Although part of the Best Western group, this is family owned and gives a family feel whilst still professional and efficient. The party DJ was spot on, as was the food and many of our guests commented on having 'forgot' about how good the venue was after not using it for some time. We got the impression that would be soon rectified. Compared to other venues, the drinks are well priced, as are the rooms, which are well and modern decorated and good value. If coming into Reading, it's positioned well near the M4 and a bus ride or 10 min taxi ride into Reading. Huge car park and with a variety of rooms large and small to use fr functions.

Very comfortable bedrooms and public areas. Restaurant homely with attentive staff and good quality cuisine. Sensible car parking at front of hotel close to reception area. All rooms very clean and tidy. A special mention of certain staff member namely Pauline, Sam (presumably Samantha), at the bar and Karen (restaurant and bar). This visit was for my father's wake and our guests and friends were certainly well looked after. Great value and good deal for rooms for those attending the event.

Visited with friends for the Four Seasons meet Take That night. The food was lovely, I had steak and it was perfect. All the staff were friendly and gave a great service. I really enjoy the food here both at breakfast and evening meal. The choice and quality is superb and at a reasonable price. I cannot praise the staff highly enough, especially the restaurant staff who are ever friendly and take great pride in the way they serve guests. An area for improvement would be internal décor, whilst clean could do with modernisation in some areas.

04/02/2016

Stayed a night here with a friend as we were in the area and needed somewhere for the night. Clean, pleasant, comfortable and perfectly suited to our needs. The room was simple but had everything we needed. Breakfast was a self-service buffet style which had a good selection of fresh items and we had no complaints. The biggest issue we had was ordering room service. We tried to order from the menu in the room but had to work to convince the person on the phone that the items we wanted were actually on the menu. Eventually they agreed and delivered our order, missing one of the extras we'd ordered. Would stay there again but probably not use room service.

"Calcot Made Daughter's Wedding Day Magical"

5
01/02/2016

Our daughter's wedding was held at the Calcot Hotel last Saturday and from start to finish the service we received was excellent. Right from booking the venue through to the ceremony and reception the organisation was first class. All of the staff were efficient and removed a lot of the hastle that goes into planning a wedding and made the day almost stress free. The room for the service was laid out nicely for the ceremony so that everyone could easily see the bride and groom make their vows. The layout of the room for the wedding breakfast was fabulous, the staff at the hotel gave expert advice on this and carried out all of my daughter's wishes. The carvery for the meal was also excellent, you could not see through the meat as you can at some well known Carveries! Christine took on the duties of toast master and kept us all in check. The room was then transformed for the evening reception with a DJ and disco included in the package. Every single member of staff were truly intent on making sure everything went to plan and the day enjoyed by everybody, this they achieved admirably. Nothing was too much trouble and we were just left to enjoy the occasion. My wife and I booked a room for the night and were pleasantly surprised with the comfort of the room and the delicious buffet breakfast. Again all of the staff, many of whom had been working the previous day, were on hand to make sure you had everything you needed. Having heard of sums being banded around for wedding venues elsewhere the Calcot Hotel offer a very competitive package while removing a lot of the stress as I have already said. I would certainly recommend it to other potential Father's of the Bride. Well done to all.

We wish your daughter and new son in law all the happiness in the future! and we hope that they have a wonderful life together.

"Another Motown night!"

31/01/2016

Great night on Friday at Motown evening. We all had lovely rooms and food and service was very good and Tony (DJ) was (even though he was not very well) fabulous as always. All my friends had a wonderful time and that is all that matters - it was a lovely way to celebrate my birthday.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for leaving a review about your recent stay and attendance at our Motown night. Tony is a true professional so it's great to see that despite the man flu he was able to keep you up and dancing all night long. We're glad to see that you had a lovely birthday with us. I'm sure we will see you again!

30/01/2016

Very dated décor, miserable serving staff and stingy portions. If you feel comfortable in the 1970s, or have an early morning meeting that requires access to the M4, then perhaps this is a good choice of hotel for you. Otherwise, I couldn't possibly recommend staying here - I would have felt much more at home in a Travelodge or Premier Inn, and for a third of the price. The term 'Delusions of Grandeur' comes to mind.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Niklaos Thank you for taking the time to post your very first review on Trip Advisor. Thank you also for pointing out how convenient our hotel is with respect to the M4 and other road networks. I am however somewhat taken aback by your random comment that the hotel as having ‘Delusions of Grandeur'. The Best Western Calcot Hotel is an approved AA 3 Star hotel and does not profess to be anything more in any of its literature. With respect to the rate I would be interested in hearing which Premier Inn is ‘a third of the price' in this area. As to the portion size, we have not been made aware of any issues as no comments were made to our staff on the evening. Thank you once again for writing a review and I am sorry that some aspects of your stay were not positive.

"Convenient & comfortable"

For starters - easy to locate about i mile from the M4, Ample parking but note I arrived on a Sunday evening! I imagine the BW Calcot does well as primarily a business/function hotel rather than catering for families.. Reception greeting was efficient, room was comfortable and very clean and with usual facilities. There were occasional door-banging noises in the corridor during the evening but otherwise no problems. The restaurant dinner menu wasn't especially exciting but the food was good and portions large. Breakfast had plenty of options and seemed to be on a "have as much as you want" self service basis. Breakfast charge was £10 and fair value in view of the choice on offer. Restaurant staff for both meals were excellent and attentive. Really good. All in all the hotel offered fair value for money and I would certainly stay again should I need to re-visit Reading.

Whilst I did live very near this hotel for nearly 30 years and have visited for various functions I'd never had Sunday lunch here. It was really busy with several large parties but overall it was excellent value and we all had an enjoyable afternoon.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hi Fiona H, It's lovely to see that you've managed to come and see us, may locals have never been to see us, so your certainly won't be the last person to say this! I booked this room as our Christmas 'do' was being held here. The room can only be described as absolutely spotless, spacious and fitted out to a high standard. For the price that I paid, it was a bargain and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this hotel to anyone. Thanks everyone for a super end to a super night!!

We had another wonderful party night at this lovely hotel. It is our third year running and we have no intention of visiting elsewhere. The service, food and atmosphere were superb and it represents excellent value for money. Plenty of parking and our room was gorgeous.

Good location for travel. Room may have been a little dated but the bed was really comfortable, and that's what is most important. Hairdryer needs updating to a normal handheld and there were a couple of lights not working in the room, I am sure though had I asked reception that would have been addressed as everyone was really helpful - I just kept forgetting to mention. Dinner was good and the breakfast was well presented, staff all seemed to be helpful and friendly too so a pleasant enough stay all round.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for leaving a review about your recent stay in our hotel. We're very happy to see that staff were friendly and helpful throughout your stay with us, and that this was carried on by each department. Obviously it's sad to see that there was issues with the bulbs in your room, and as you stated if this does happen again just ask and we will endeavour to sort this out. We hope that you stay with us again next time your in the area

"Appalling Christmas Dinner and Dance"

2
08/01/2016

Went here for a midweek work Christmas Party and although it was one of their cheaper nights I would still expect a good standard of party but it was a let down. Vegetable soup starter was OK, can't really go wrong with something like that. Christmas dinner had plenty of turkey and veg but was ruined by the worst roast potatoes I've ever eaten, they looked nice but tasted like rubber. Dessert was a gluten free orange sponge cake which was absolutely disgusting. No one on our table ate more than a mouthful and when we told the waitress we weren't impressed she was very apologetic and said it hadn't gone down at all well and hardly anyone had eaten it. One of my colleagues has a nut allergy and asked if the dessert contained nuts. The waitress went away to check and came back and said unfortunately they weren't sure as it was brought in. Nothing was offered as a substitute! Then there's the music, well a DJ can make or break a party and the DJ here was terrible. Yes some people danced, including me but that doesn't mean I enjoyed the music, I just wanted to dance. There were pauses between songs, too much talking over the mike and songs just didn't flow together. We all left early and certainly wouldn't book again. A few days after the party my colleague made a complaint to the manager, she eventually got a response after sending a chasing email. However as she was apparently the only one that complained the manager wasn't interested in her complaint. She was actually complaining on behalf of 8 people so maybe we should have all complained separately. I didn't have time to write and complain with Christmas coming up so maybe other guests were the same. Dismissing a complaint because no one else complained is appalling customer service! This place have no interest in customer satisfaction just making money.

Couldn't of asked for a better day, staff were brilliant from booking to the whole day/ evening I married 25/07/15 there was another wedding going on but staff remained professional and caring even when very busy. Food was good but then I'd chosen that everyone has said it was the best wedding they'd been to everyone had fun the dj kept the dance floor busy n staff kept the room tidy and chatted to guests happily making way for me to enjoy the day. The night staff were fantastic cleaning the breakfast room from my beautiful wedding. The rooms are cosy, big beds, clean, tv is provided with a desk n tea making essentials, hair dryer, ironing board and iron is provided. Clean n big enough bathroom with shower, plenty of towels provided I didn't stay in the honeymoon suite we had a standard double. Breakfast is continental so it's up to you what you chose we had the full English and was pleasantly surprised how nice it was. We can't thank the staff enough for such a wonderful day filled with memories that will last forever

"Excellent New Years Eve stay"

06/01/2016

My friend and I booked this hotel for the New Years Eve celebration event in the Kennet and Avon Suite and we also booked a twin room. We checked in at 3pm and were very pleased with the size and standard of our twin room with its lovely en-suite. The NYE event and atmosphere was excellent. Despite being packed out with guests, all of the staff were very efficient and friendly. Our waitress, Maxine, was wonderful. Everything brought to our table was delicious. The DJ played a good mix of music and the dance floor was packed all night. We both slept very well and breakfast was varied, plentiful and delicious again. If you want a good standard of room, professional friendly staff and good food, we would definitely recommend this hotel.

No fuss hotel that holds disco & dine packages throughout the year and also many other events Close to M4, stadium and town centre Nice Eve meals and very well laid out breakfast with great coffee. The bedrooms are comfy and include hot drinks making facilities and hairdryer. The website is great to stay updated on the fun weekends at this hotel, the dance floor is shiny and they go all out to dress the tables beautiful where you are served a wonderful 3 course menu before dancing or joining in on the murder mystery eves they also hold

Have visited this place many times before not not for quite a while. The service was good the food was excellent, the beef was to die for! For the price it was certainly value for money. Would recommend every time if this standard was to remain and I see no reason why not.

Yet another brilliant night at the Calcot hotel. There were some problems with the music system microphones but it didnt spoil the atmosphere or enjoyment of the evening. We stayed overnight in a very comfortable room which had everything needed for our stay. With a really tasty breakfast the following morning.

Have stayed here before and Stayed again one night with a party of 10. Booked to see the 'Base Tones' who were excellent ... everybody up dancing and singing! Had a great meal which was prompt and hot and from a great choice of menu (unusual for a large group function). All of the staff were efficient and friendly . Breakfast was also excellent and plenty of choice . The price to stay was £64 for a double including breakfast which is excellent and much nicer than trying to get taxis home after a night out. Well done the Calcot.... We will be back again ??

"Great place!"

06/12/2015

Stayed here the night of 27th November. Twin room really nice, beds comfortable, plenty of room to move about. Desk in corner and space for hanging clothes. Shower enclosure large and powerful and hot but bathroom overall quite small (not that you need a lot space I know!!). In the morning had a lovely buffet breakfast and staff on reception and restaurant really nice. I would say the main communal areas especially reception are a bit shabby but the rooms were OK. For the money we paid £62.50 you really can't go wrong. Would stay here again with no worries.

"Good experience"

03/12/2015

I was with a large group having its annual Christmas luncheon. I started with a delicious tomato soup so looked forward to an equally good main course. It was. Beautifully tender turkey, roast potatoes, green beans, carrots, sausage, stuffing and plenty of gravy. Yes, something was missing - Brussels sprouts. On enquiry, I was told that the hotel 'doesn't do sprouts'. This lack was made up for by other splendid factors in the service and atmosphere. The service from all staff was excellent and they were all smartly dressed. What a change from last year at a large hotel in the local town centre!

"Queen tribute night "

30/11/2015

Stopped here on our way to Bath Christmas Markets. The staff were very welcoming , with no exceptions! We had a lovely 3 course meal at the floor show ,very well organised, with a great menu which came out quickly. Special thanks to our waiter Philip , who was most attentive and efficient. My only gripe was that the bed was a bit small but , then again, my husband and I are both over 6 ft. That said, we and the couple we were with, are planning our next trip.

"Annex rooms far better than main hotel"

4
28/11/2015

Have stayed twice in the last fortnight - once in the main hotel, and once in the purpose built annex. No comparison - main hotel room 10 was dated, a bit smelly and had an issue with the shower. Annex was 100% better - good shower, well decorated very pleasant stay. If you have a choice, stay in the annex. Hotel is well located for the M4. Restaurant had good choice of food at a price you would expect for a BW. Many people on business eating on their own, so you don't feel out of place. Very good breakfast selection if a little pricey. Good sized car park.

"Final let down"

25/11/2015

We visited this hotel for a wedding. On the day the food was good and the service was also good. The room was very basic but comfortable, the bed could be bigger as my husbands legs were dangling off the end! My issue is that the following morning at breakfast (which was also good) a staff member, older lady with short grey hair and glasses was extremely rude. My husband and I walked into the breakfast room and greeted a family member. Whilst we were talking with him the staff member rudely interrupted, told us that we must be seated now. Her tone and manner was unacceptable and unfortunately left a lasting impression on our stay. It is a shame as this has dramatically dropped my score. The other staff members were great during our visit which probably highlights her rudeness even more.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of our hotel The very positive remarks with regards to the wedding reception are most appreciated especially the quality of the food and service. I am very disappointed that such a good experience was tarnished by an incident at breakfast and as a consequence lowered your score. I am indeed looking into the sequence of events of this and if you could contact me directly I will respond to you accordingly. Thank you once again for your overall positive review and bringing this incident to my attention.

We stopped overnight on Thursday on our way to Hereford. We were greeted by a Receptionist who was warm, welcoming and friendly. As we had previously booked she knew our names and gave us detailed information. We took our cases to our room and went to the restaurant for a meal as they serve until 9.45 pm. Again the servers greeted us warmly, enquiring of our journey. The steaks we had were the best we have tasted, the menu quite extensive, the service impeccable. Breakfast was again top class and the staff so helpful. Quality we have come to expect from a Best Western Hotel.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Here at the Best Western Calcot Hotel we strive to offer a very personal service and it is truly wonderful to hear that we were able to offer such a service on your visit. Many people offer praise on the quality of our steaks and it is good to know that we are continuing to impress. Thank you so much for your kind remarks and we look forward to welcoming you back in the near future.

Keep visiting this hotel for business but this time decided to attend the Motown carvery disco. The food was superb, served hot and fresh and the atmosphere and music superb. Only problem we had was getting on the floor as it was always packed! Next time we will bring group of friends so make the dancefloor bigger!!!

"Dinner Disco evenings."

23/11/2015

We have visited the Calcot on many occasions because of their Disco Dine evenings. With different music themes and live tribute bands the evenings have had fantastic atmosphere. Meals are always delicious and varied. Staff always have time for everybody and do their best to help in any way they can. Friday evening Disco Dines have a "Happy Hour" between 6.30 and 7.30 when all drinks, by the glass, are half price. Accommodation is excellent, spotless and comfortable and we are looking forward to many more visits.

22/11/2015

My husband and myself stayed here 2 nights whilst visiting family in Reading. Check in was excellent, customer service was of a high standard. The room allocated was easy to find and very pleasant on entry. Exceptionally clean throughout. Iron & iron board provided. Tea/Coffee facilities as well as shortbread biscuits. Bathroom was spotless with a lovely shower. Tv ample as well as information about the hotel. The corridors were spotless and smelt fresh and clean. The breakfast was fantastic plenty to choose from and not rushed at all to enjoy. Continental and cooked if wanted. All in all a very pleasant stay and will look forward to staying again on the next visit down from Yorkshire

"Motown night"

21/11/2015

Not worth £25 per head. Food was TERRIBLE. Drinks extortionate prices. £4 bottle of Bud. £2 small glass of draught Coke. DJ unbelievably bad. Only good thing about the night was the company and the cup of tea after the meal.

"Great service and a smashing breakfast"

21/11/2015

I booked the hotel as it was close to a function I was attending. The place was neat and tidy with good service from the reception. It was cold in the UK when I arrived so was pleased that the room was nice and warm. Breakfast in the morning was lovely with a good variety of food and lots of it. My only complaint would be the small television in the room but overall very good.

"Noisy!"

2
19/11/2015

Stayed for a night and realised when I pulled up outside that I'd been here before and moved hotels because the room was full of dead flies. Actually the hotel has had a spruce up and it's clean, warm and comfortable. Staff are lovely too. Two things though the hotel car park is always full of work vans and as a lady travelling alone I felt too intimidated to go to the bar or restaurant for food so went out early and stayed in my room. The other thing is you can hear every movement and noise from the rooms around you...stomping around upstairs...whole conversations on the mobile....the telly next door...sure whoever was in there was deaf so don't expect a good nights sleep unless you've had a skinful and don't care...will not be staying again

"Lovely breakfast! "

14/11/2015

Booked with booking.com and chose this hotel because of location. It was a treat for my mum's 80th and we were using the trip to visit family. Check in was easy, very friendly receptionist. We had a problem but I was pleasantly surprised at how it was rectified (unfortunately after we had left but that was my fault). The manager rang me and was extremely helpful and has made everything right. Breakfast is worth having - one of the nicest and freshest I've had, loads of choice and very hot. When I got home, I realised I had left my kindle, this was posted out to me immediately. Thank you Andrew and staff, we will come back next year and will get to turn left this time!!

The location was ideal, the room was adequate but the bathroom was a bit on the tight side but if you turn sideways on the throne you can stretch your elbows out! The restaurant could do with some evening mood lighting as it was very bright in there and difficult to wind down.

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Jennie429, Thank you for leaving a review after your recent stay. We're sorry to see that there wasn't enough space on the throne for you. A large amount of our bathrooms are currently being remodelled so they're more spacious. We hope that next time you'll be able to full enjoy your throne experience. Restaurant wise we're currently looking into some solutions with the lighting, as they nights are darker earlier in the day, a soft gentle lighting would allow people to shut down sooner. We hope that you'll despite the issues you've raised you'll still come back and see us again if your in the area

18/10/2015

Nice and clean, a good for a standard road side hotel. Corridors a little noisy with banging fire doors being heard within the room. Wife found hair dryer to be useless and when trying to use her own found out she was under the smoke alarm and set it of for a few seconds. The way to the room was a door off the bar then via a corridor bisecting the kitchen! Warning if they book you a Taxi to go around the corner during the day it will cost £20, try booking it your self as locals said it should not have cost that much. View from room was a back gardens!

Andrew_MacLachlan, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Calcot Hotel, responded to this review
Morning Richard C, Thank you for taking time to review our hotel after your recent stay with us. Were sorry to see that your wife had issues with the Hair dryer, there is no reason as to why this would have set off a smoke alarm, as they're smoke based sensors, however all we can do is apologise for the inconvenience. In regards to the taxi company, this does seem a high charge, and not what our regular taxi firm would have charged, they're much cheaper hence why we use them regularly. We hope this experience hasn't jaded your view of our hotel, and we hope to see you again in the near future.

Our bowls club once again held their annual presentation dinner at this hotel. The service was, as usual, first class and the 3 course meal very good. The room we use is ideal for our party size (50 - 60) and nothing ever seems to be too much trouble for the friendly staff.

This hotel has clearly grown over the years and as a result the layout and rooms are rather quirky. That's fine and indeed means this is not a uniform 'identikit' business hotel. It is aimed at business users (it seems) and the room price reflects that. Staff were very friendly and helpful both those on reception and serving breakfast. We did not eat dinner there but had pre-dinner drinks. They were all very pricey

"Christening party"

We recently had a carvery lunch here for about 70 guests following my daughter's Christening. The event was very well organised and I can thoroughly recommend this venue to anyone thinking of having a similar celebration. The room was laid out beautifully for us and nothing was too much trouble. The food was great and staff were extremely attentive. The hotel is also easy to find and has plenty of parking. I would not hesitate to use them again.

"Good overnight stay"

Good location with excellent parking, friendly and helpful staff, always eager to help. 10-15 minutes (well lit) walk from the Reading coach station (in fact just a bus stop at Sainsbury's at J12 on M4), so ideal if you are going on a day trip to (for instance) a sporting fixture in London, with a late evening return. A big plus was the restaurant accepting orders up to 2130 on a Sunday night - unexpected but welcome after a long day!

"Average hotel"

The hotel is located not far from the M4, and within a very short walk of a small retail park. Stayed here for business for a few nights. Reception staff were very welcoming and explained the opening times of the restaurant for dinner and breakfast. Rooms are very comfortable, windows opened, bathroom was top notch with its' recently refurbished shower, very generously sized. Restaurant was very busy at the beginning of the week but had died down by the middle of the week, once the business travellers had moved on. I would say the menu is limited, and expensive for what you get. Breakfasts are help yourself buffet-style, always kept topped up. The waiting staff were not overbearing, but were quick to clear the table. There was on occasion a few minutes wait whilst you were waiting for the Host to take you to a table. All-in-all an average stay, in an average hotel.

Nice hotel, decent rooms, good bar, excellent breakfast (sausages are the best) and it serves John Smiths. Red kites floating past the hotel make my stay more enjoyable and a bus stop 100 yards up road for regular trips into Reading.
