"Handy for station"

3
thedennies82, Whittlesey, United Kingdom 19/11/2021

This hotel is directly opposite the station so would be very good but the outside of hotel needs attention. It looks old and tired…dead plants in pots and small garden overgrown and uncared for. Inside is the same, it's a lovely building but old worn and ripped furniture in the reception area let's it down. The coffee bar and breakfast area have been painted and look good but other areas need to be addressed. The cost of car parking is a big problem. There is a large car park but the cost of parking (£30) for two nights stay is outrageous. We chose to be dropped off by taxi but this was inconvenient as we were a party of 6 so left without transport for our stay, otherwise it would have added a large cost to our bill.

I prepaid for a two nights stay at the Great Northern Hotel for £516.00. I arrived from Scotland at 9.00pm the heating and hot water in room 343 was not working. Initially I was told they were trying to fix it and at 11.00pm at night I was told they were fully booked they could not fix it and I had to sleep in the room. I was offered a 10% discount. When I threatened to call the police I was given a refund . I had to start looking for another hotel at night to move into which cost me £371.00 . A night. This is my worst experience ever. I have stayed in This hotel several times pre-Covid. But something has definitely changed for worse. I was only offered another different hotel to stay the night after I had booked another hotel. Terrible , inconsiderate, hospitality. Absolute rubbish Mrs A

Positives Nice old style hotel. Pleasant staff. Large room. Good en suite Negatives Bed so hard and slept badly (131) Breakfast was adequate at very best Real bad one is a car park charge of £15 which is enough to warn about staying If you work out the car park income this brings in your eyes water

Shaun Rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Good morning Thank you for your review. I am pleased that you enjoyed certain aspects of your stay. We do feel that what we offer for breakfast , hot and cold is quite extensive so I can only presume that on your stay we had a few items missing, so apologies for this. The car park charge unfortunately is no longer under the control of the hotel, and an issue that can only be settled at higher level than mine, and i am in talks with them to come to some arrangement. Regards

Other rooms could see in bathroom, no hot water at all, shower didnt work at all, water went sideways and not down, couldnt even have a cold shower like that. Table lamp flickering, internet rubbish and no one thete to check guests out !

Shaun Rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Thank you for your review, on several sights. We do have a contactless check out system , which is explained on the front desk, when this is not manned. We were not aware of any issues in your room as during your stay they were never mentioned to any of the staff that were on duty, either on the front desk or the bar areas, and of course as we have contactless check out, there would not be anyone on the desk and also at this stage no chance to rectify the issue. If you had of mentioned we could have either moved your room or sought to fix the issues straight away. I do apologise that you were not totally happy with your stay , but we would have been more than happy to deal with your issues at the time. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager

"I had my belongings stolen after hotel staff checked somebody else into my room while I went to the shop!"

1
deanss91, Wirral, United Kingdom 15/11/2021

Checked into my room at 11pm, put my bags in my room containing my wallet, credit cards, driving license, car keys and considerable amount of cash that I needed to make a purchase the following day. Walked into Peterborough Town to find a shop that was open and returned at 11:55pm. To my horror my room had been ransacked, cards and driving license left out of my wallet and cash gone! Immediately went to reception where I was informed they had checked someone else into my room while I was out and this person had abruptly left hotel once he had stolen my property, never to return obviously. I demanded police were called immediately and made several requests for hotel manager to be there when they arrived but he was unavailable and apparently unaware of the situation at all I discovered the next day! Finally got to bed at 4am once police had took statements. I am still waiting for reimbursement from the hotel due to there blatant negligence a month on, as of yet I haven't even received a refund for my room. Disgraceful!

"Fantastic weekend"

User 18/10/2021

Great customer service very welcoming on arrival. Rooms clean and lots of character as it's an old building beautiful high ceilings and roll top bath. Breakfast very good choice, full English served on hot plate which is rare service . Although others comment about creaking stairs it was not an issue for us as it's the age and character of the building. Great value for money.

"Get up early. Keep £15 in lose change for the car park and don't try to book in if the receptionist is on the phone."

2
Matrixsenior, Huddersfield, United Kingdom 14/10/2021

As I arrived the receptionist was on the phone. I was kept waiting a little while. However, when the call ended I expected a smile and a 'sorry about that, how can I help you,?' What I got was 'Do you want to check in because they are ringing back'. I was a bit surprised by this. In my room there was a set of drawers and cupboards. However it was all locked so I couldn't use it. I wondered what was in it and for whose convenience it had been placed there. The room was quiet, dark and the bed large, I slept well. On going to breakfast the next morning I checked my room card. It finishes at 0900hrs. Is it me or is this unusually early? I got up a bit later as my meeting didn't start till 10. So I missed breakfast. I also got charged £15 to park. I know hotels say this is normal and they don't administer the car park. It's only normal because hotels in towns and city's have made it so and they don't administer it because they have tended them to contract out.

shaun rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Thank you for your review, and I shall be speaking with the team regarding their approach to clients to make sure that they are more welcoming. Our timings for breakfast are advertised on our website as well as on your check in card and in the rooms, so my apologies if this was not made clear to you, they should inform on check in. Parking charges are in place now but we feel the room rate plus parking still makes us very competitive in the local market. Thank you again for taking the time to review the hotel. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson GM

"Great location but needs some updating."

3
Meteorite-Mike, Manchester, United Kingdom 02/10/2021

I stayed here for one night whilst working in Peterborough. The location is great. Easy to get to from the main roads, right next to Peterborough station and easy access to shops. Upon arrival I was surprised to discover the car park had a charge. I parked up and then struggled to find the main entrance. Eventually I found my way in and too reception. Check in was easy and the staff friendly and polite. My room was on the second floor and was large, comfortable if a little dated. The bed was huge and comfy. The first issue was I couldn't get the main lights in my room to work. I tried the different light switches but nothing worked. I put the bedside lamp on and it was really dim (the bulb looked like it was about to burn out). I got changed and decided to nip out for the evening and explore. On the way out I called at Reception to ask about the lights in the room (was there a switch for the door card like some other hotels). The member of staff at reception said that the building was old and sometimes the main lights didn't work. I was told that if I messed about with the light switches I might be able to get the lights to work! On returning to the hotel that evening, I tried the lights again and nothing. I decided to watch tv. Upon picking up the remote I notice it was dirty. When I eventually switched on the tv it was pointless as every channel broke up. I then tried to connect my tablet o the WiFi but it wouldn't connect. Neither would my phone! I went down to reception but there was nobody around. I then decided to just go to bed. I went for a wash but the water was cold. The bed was very comfy and I slept well. I tried to have a shower in the morning but the water was look warm and low pressure. I went to check out and wanted to speak to somebody but there was nobody there. I couldn't wait around so I left. I then had to pay £15 for the car park (my office was unaware of the parking charge)! Nice old building but needs some tlc.

"Don't have your special occasion here!"

1
R158E, Peterborough, United Kingdom 22/09/2021

We recently attended a private occasion here. On previous occasions when we have attended “do”s we have been able to park free, but the hotel is under new management and everyone using the car park has to pay. £5 for the evening….yes £5!!! It would have been cheaper to park in the station car park. Attendees were asked to make their menu choices a week in advance, fair enough. The food… the pigs cheek terrine consisted of slices of flavour-free meat in jelly, a huge amount of jelly, accompanied by pickled mushrooms and dry toasted brioche. Two mouthfuls was more than enough. You may ask why I had a second mouthful if the first was so bad - I was making sure that it really was that dreadful. Next, roast beef and Yorkshire pudding with vegetables. The beef looked promising, but was actually very chewy and lacking in flavour. The Yorkshire puddings were thick and solid and the vegetables undercooked, not just al-dente. Someone else on my table remarked that the gravy was the best part of it. However, the vegetarians had the worst experience - the kitchen had, wait for it……FORGOTTEN TO COOK their option! Yes, really! So we had a long wait while they found the poor unfortunate vegetarians something to eat. By the look on the face of our companion it wasn't worth the wait. Desert was probably the least awful part of my meal, cold chocolate brownie and ice cream (half a scoop) on a very hot plate. Perhaps that was meant to warm the brownie up? Someone on our table had ordered cheese and gluten free biscuits. They were given cheese, nothing else, just cheese. There were some other oversights, for example inadequate cutlery laid. I would have thought that “new management” would be working hard to make a good impression, but I certainly cannot recommend this place on any level

Shaun Rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Good afternoon Thank you for your review, and your continues support of the Great Northern Hotel. I do apologise for the issues you have raised regarding the food, and as you have been here before you know that this is not the norm. With a new team in place we are working with the new company to make sure that we achieve the highest levels of service and standards, and of course these are challenging times for the hospitality industry, with supply issues as well as a UK wide shortage of staff. All this aside I know we will improve our offering and will take your comments on board to make sure this does not happen again. Car parking is now separated from the hotel, and no longer under my control at the moment, but we are looking at suitable solutions. Please accept my sincerest of apologies for any inconvenience caused. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager

"Good location, dated hotel"

3
User 18/09/2021

This hotel is set in a great location just across the road from the railway station and a minute's walk from Waitrose. The bed was comfortable enough but unfortunately there was no running hot water for the duration of my stay, which I wasn't informed about until I checked in, despite other reviews suggesting the boiler had been broken for at least the previous 10 weeks. The hotel itself has a dated feel, with creaky floors, dirty windows and a slightly stale smell.

shaun rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Good Afternoon thank you for your review, i am happy to say that the boilers are working and have been since 14th august, you should have been informed beforehand regarding the boiler so my apologies for this. The hotel is very traditional in its decor and we do try to keep it this way, but obviously clean. I shall be speaking with housekeeping to pay more attention in future. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager

Hotel was good value for money, staff friendly, room clean, breakfast good. When I booked it was free parking, when I got there I had to pay £15.00 I wasn't happy about this, I felt like I was mislead.

shaun rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Good Afternoon Thank you for your review, and I understand your frustration regarding the car park, we do state charges on our website and all other sites. The hotel no longer controls the car park but we are working on future options, and hope to have suitable resolutions soon. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager

User 13/09/2021

Stayed here a few weeks ago and what a lovely stay, the staff made us feel very welcome, do not really have a bad word to say about this hotel its just so unique and it has character. Food was lovely had a hot sandwich for lunch its a shame i went out for dinner otherwise i would have liked to try other things on the menu. Breakfast in the morning was delicious. The room was very clean, good lighting, good shower/bath and the bed was so comfortable. Brilliant stay!

"Poor afternoon tea menu"

1
User 06/09/2021

Unfortunately the menu description of the traditional afternoon tea did not match to what actually came out. What's worst, the staff didn't even address the issue or notified us at the start when the food came out. Despite telling them about it, the staff didn't have the sincerity to try and rectify it but instead just applied a discount to our bill. Also, cutleries and glass were all dirty. Service was substandard, I asked for a new knife and they came back with a fish knife.

Shaun Rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Thank you for your review. You should have been made aware that the Afternoon tea menu is subject to change, due to supply issues for ingredients and products, so my apologies for this. George did his utmost to satisfy you on your visit and did check on you a few times, and at each point you said all was fine, only when the bill was ready to be paid did you bring up some concerns, so George did present some discount on your bill. Your food was served quickly and your hot drinks the same and there was ample presence from the staff during your meal to highlight the dissatisfaction with the food, which I might add was all eaten. I full confidence in our Afternoon Tea offering as well as the service offered, and I consider the discount more of a good will gesture thank something that was warranted. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager

"When the lights go out!"

3
hollyarran, New Romney, United Kingdom 02/09/2021

Check in fine, went to lovely room but main lights not working, no problem all the side lights worked. Bathroom nice but big chip in one of the stone tiles that could cause injury. The worst thing was the noise from fellow residents, loud talking and swearing in the corridor and next room in and off until at least 2330. I even considered moving hotel that late at night! This could be a lovely hotel but currently needs a bit of attention, even guests being asked to keep the noise done when returning ir coming from rooms would help. Currently far from BEST Western and 3 star.

I found the great northern hotel to be clean, inviting and downright classic! The staff was very friendly and consistently making sure I was comfortable, the bed was extremely comfortable. "Faulty towers"

2
roberthJ3970WQ, Mexborough, United Kingdom 26/08/2021

First impressions needs refurb! They've had time to do it!! Walked to room heard every creak! I'm the floorboards, got to the room I'd been upgraded to an executive room! So was looking forward to see the upgraded room, on first impressions of the room I would hate to see what the other room looked like! Very old room and still very very creaky! The bathroom had broken bath panel and the shower was next to useless no pressure at all!! Ventured down for food and the menus seemed very vague, I decided on a BUCKET of chicken wings! I was hungry! I asked if the meal came with any extras and the lady didn't know so went to check! She came back and confirmed chips and salad, the meal finally came and a slate was handed to me with salad chips and 5 chicken wings!! No BUCKET to be seen! I said hardly a bucket of wings! She didn't reply and walked off! I decided to creak off to bed and tried to sleep, the hotel is next to a train station so there's trains and they're loud and they never stop! And at 12midnight we had a random bloke shouting down his phone on the platform for nearly 3 hours! Finally I think he jumped into a train so had some peace for a short while, breakfast! 7-9 I went down at 7:05 and nobody was on reception to guid us to the dining area I searched and found the chef and he said breakfast isn't till 7, I pointed out it's 5 past! He said oh I'm running late and and said I can go sit down but he won't be ready for ten mins! He finally came and took my order at 7:18 he said full English I said no could I have toast beans bacon and poached eggs, when he heard patched eggs he looked shocked he said you will have to wait if you want poached eggs they take 15 mins!!!! I've never known it take 15 mins to poach an egg but I said no problem, eventually around 7:45 my breakfast turned up dry toast no butter some beans on one slice and 1 rash of bacon and one poached egg! Not the best breakfast! I up and left after having a chuckle with some other guests about the whole experience of a night in the hotel, I got to the barrier after checking out with the invisible receptionist and presser the buzzer to be let out, and nobody let me out I sat there a few mins until I then returned to the hotel to work out how I leave the carpark! I managed to speak to the chef who seemed to be the only staff member In the building and he said just press the buzzer! I said I have been doing, he said is there nobody on reception? I said no, he had to let me and another guest out of the carpark! I'm happy that this will be my one and only trip to this hotel!!

shaun rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Robert Thank you for your review, and the comments made. Just for a small point of reference, the hotel was closed during the pandemic, and although the time was there to have refurbishment , like most other people everyone was furloughed for their safety, and we followed government instructions .The creaking of the floorboards is due to the age of the building, The team obviously took the initiative to upgrade you complimentary, so i am sorry that this was not acceptable for you. Regarding our food offering we are serving a limited menu since re starting and I will make sure that all the staff are aware of what items are served with each dish. staffing wise we do run a tight ship so i apologise if certain areas are not manned all the time, reception there is a sign and a jar for quick check out. I do think that your headline regarding faulty towers is certainly quite harsh and demoralising for those of us who are trying to make the guest experience as good as possible with the tools we have to work with. I think we can all breath a sigh of relief that this will be your one and only trip to the Great Northern Hotel. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager

"very disappointing"

2
User 09/08/2021

We chose this hotel as it is by the station and we needed to catch a train at 8am the hotel is literally a few steps away from the station entrance. However, we were disappointed that we were told only on arrival that the boiler was broken and there was no hot water - we were offered a price reduction. We discovered the room was dirty, a bed valance was soiled, the room was not cleaned during the day. We missed breakfast on Saturday as we were told it would be served at 7.00 - service did not in fact start until 8.00 - when we were catching the train. We've never stayed in such a poorly kept hotel before and won't be returning.

"Awful experience"

1
User 05/08/2021

We arrived here on 23rd July after a long drive. I had booked a couple of weeks before and had been in touch with the hotel also for a room as close to stairs as possible, had a reply but was told nothing about the situation at the hotel. When we arrived we were told there had been no hot water for a few weeks. Why were we not told about this until we arrived to check in? We were offered a refund, but we had traveled all day, so we were offered a 30% refund which would be processed on Monday (we were there on Saturday). The lady on reception changed our room at check in so it was close to the stairs as no lift. Tried the door card and didn't work. Went back to reception and got another card, that didn't work either. She changed our room again and we were now as far from the stairs as possible! Although our room was changed twice we were assured the hotel was fully booked! The room wasn't pleasant but it was only one night. Breakfast in the morning was not a nice experience. I think it was the night manager that spoke to us and spent ages moaning about the company and hotel. He clearly wasn't happy in his role and made sure everyone knew it. Struggled to get someone to bring us coffee and there wasn't even any butter for pastries. Asked for croissants as none left and was told they had none left. Other people were still arriving for breakfast to find nothing left! So, breakfast was just a coffee. Checked out as soon as possible. Have now spent almost 2 weeks chasing our refund, most emails are ignored. Finally get a reply to be told it's processed and will be another 5 to 10 working days, so could be a month from when we stayed. Terrible service and never again will I stay in this hotel

Got all the facilities you need, a bar, a restaurant, great rooms including a hot tub room. Staff are extremely friendly and very accomodating. I'm living in this hotel for the next 6 months minimum and would advise anyone to stay here. It's got a homely Atmosphere all I can say is if you are staying in Peterborough... Stay here.

Don't go in room 138, Shower only cold water, Bedding distgusting, Toilet seat broken, Sink plughole won't keep water in, Radiator wire and box sticking out, View awful, Filthy window sill and view on right, kitchen below! Quilt should be thrown out.

I pop in here for a coffee / beer dependent on how my day has been and I've been coming here off and on for over 4 years. Helpful staff who I've got to know on first name terms. Stayed here once as well and thought it was a decent stay. Would have no problem recommending

My husband & I chose this hotel due to its close proximity to the railway station. As we were having an early start for a train trip it was literally just across the road from the hotel to the station. We were pre warned that there would be no hot water due to a boiler failure so that didn't worry us, we knew that there would be a kettle in the room and we could boil enough water to wash in. Unfortunately ,although we had been told that bar meals would be available, on our first night the management had decided that the kitchen would open and on the second night we returned to the hotel at 9.45 pm and the bar area was again closed. There was obviously some problems over that weekend, limited breakfast available and a lack of communications to guests. Despite these problems the staff were very helpful and did their best to sort things out as they occurred . If travelling by train I would use this hotel due to the convenience of being so near to the station but would come prepared just in case there was no food available again.

We recently had to stay here overnight due to train problems (the hotel is the nearest to Peterborough station). Under testing circumstances with the pandemic and a number of people needing rooms I thought the staff were incredibly helpful. Would use definitely again in more 'normal' times.

Excellent service from all staff. Loved the good quality bed linen and fluffy towels. Excellent location across the road from train station and next door to large Waitrose where they served delicious blueberry porridge. Very quiet location , better than town centre hotel where I have stayed previously. Very close to city centre and shopping centre. Easy to walk to. Will definitely stay again. Decor a bit dark in the reception area, but my room was lovely and light and modern.

Having booked through a different website to one I normally use I arrived to be told that the hotel was overbooked and I didn't have a room. The receptions staff and (I believe it was) the shift manager were wonderful in dealing with the issue and I was given a drink while waiting. They called numerous hotels looking for a room for me and didn't stop until they had one, my details were given over the phone to the other hotel and I was delighted to not have been left high and dry. The Great Northern weren't at fault with the overbooking but they dealt with it efficiently and with genuine care and concern for me. I will happily book (through the usual site) and stay with them when next visiting as they were absolutely brilliant.

Shaun Rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Thank you for your review, and I am pleased that the staff on duty managed to arrange alternatives for you. The issue from the booking site has now been resolved so hopefully we will not be put in this situation again. Thank you very much for your kindness and understanding. Booked a suite for an unexpected business trip. Receptionist couldn't have been more disinterested on arrival- not wearing a mask either. Room was ok but bathroom in poor state - dirty grouting and some tiles damaged. No hot water in the shower and a heavy shower “controller” fell off the wall and landed on my foot. As I was getting ready to check out and leave I had to endure a cold shower - when I reported on checkout I was assured someone would have a look - as I pointed out that didn't help me. Not worth the money to be honest - I'd have preferred Premier Inn but it was fully booked!!

Shaun Rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Gail Thank you for your review, I am sorry that there were certain aspects of your stay that did not meet your expectations, we shall address these with the team and make sure improvements are made. Regarding the wearing of masks, some of my staff are exempt and do wear a badge to say this, reception included. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager

"Place Stinks & is Dirty"

User 20/06/2021

Called in for a quick drink while waiting for a train. Lady on reception/ in bar was unhelpful & scruffy and had a poor attitude. The place had a very unpleasant musty smell. Furniture, carpets & decor very tired and in need of much TLC. I've been coming here for the odd drink for years and this is the worst I've ever seen this hotel. I felt like the dirty surroundings were more of a threat than any Covid. I would not advise visiting this dump let alone eating/staying.

Good Afternoon Thank you for your review, which I do find quite out of sync with the feedback that we have been receiving since we re opened the hotel on the 17 May after such a long time closed. Our bedrooms have been very busy and the majority of guests have given positive feedback regarding the cleanliness and the staff. I do find your comments regarding the staff member a little distasteful, and quite personal, as this member of staff works really hard to accommodate guests, and is always polite. I appreciate your personal opinions and your right to vent them, but I have to disagree, as I say staff and cleanliness are always commented positively. As regards the decor we shall be discussing this with higher management. Kind Regards

"The staff are so unhelpful and Beth on reception is extremely rude."

User 30/05/2021

I am really disappointed with my stay here due to the hotel staff especially one member called Beth being really rude and unhelpful her name was Beth. Also, only 2 lights in the whole room worked, but because they are too busy nothing would be done. My room was also not serviced. Firstly, there is very rarely anyone on reception and the sign says if there is no one around to ring the phone which just rings to the reception. However, there is never any answer so after 10minutes I gave up. When I returned back from my evening out to enquire about parking, after ringing the phone for a good few minutes a female member of staff came to the desk. When I raised my query she was extremely rude and was speaking to us in an unacceptable way when all I asked is how do I go about parking on the premises and she was trying to argue when I asked questions. I then asked after this query if I could get some more tea and milk for my room and turned me away. This was at 1830 and she said she would bring some up at 2000. Once again during this time speaking to me unacceptably throughout. It got to 2015 and I rang the reception and asked if I could get some tea and milk as a reminder and she just replied with “we have been busy.” Then hung up. It was easier for me to go to a supermarket and get this stuff which I shouldn't have had to do. I have now checked out and still didn't receive tea or milk. Overall, the room was good for what I was after however the lack of help and the rudeness from the staff will not have me rushing back anytime soon.

Shaun Rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Good Morning Thank you for your candid review. I am sorry that the team did not meet with your expectations. Having been open for less than a week they have worked tirelessly to make sure that everything was in order, but apologies that we fell short on a few things. There is no excuse for the staff to behave this way , although the trains being cancelled did mean that she was under pressure to make sure all guests were looked after, but as I say , no excuse to be rude and please accept my sincere apologies for this. We are working to resolve all our opening teething problems and I do hope that you will give us a second chance. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager

Stayed in Hill suite, filled bath up to inlets, turned on jacuzzi, spewed out clumps of black.Room dirty and dusty, definitely not sanitised. Went down for evening meal, restaurant shut. Went down for breakfast, packed meal bag only. Got home charged twice. Awesome.

Terrible stay while at the hotel yes the room was very nice and great big bed but the manager of the hotel was not a very nice man. He told me I had to leave the hotel due to me being told to isolate in my room until I had covid 19 test, which was negative. But he was not happy with me isolating at his hotel and asked me to leave this was a day after the prime minister anonsed a national lock down.

shaun rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Good Afternoon Thank you for your review. I am surprised by this as we actually never spoke until you were about to leave the hotel. The company that booked the room for you did advise me very late that you had to isolate due to suspected covid. Firstly, it was the lateness of notice that I was concerned about from this company, and the fact that I had seen you come in an out of the hotel a few times this particular day, so again this did flag up a concern , I advised your company that if the hotel rules and government guidelines could not be followed, the booking would not be extended past your check out date, the next day. They took the decision to then re book you somewhere else. I am sorry you felt aggrieved, nothing personal was meant just I had to think about the safety of the majority. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson GM

A good, big room, with a large bathroom. The pillows were a bit thin. We were in room 127, and that overlooks Waitrose car park. We were woken at 6am on Monday by bin collection from GNH car park, and then again at 6:30 by a food delivery in noisy metal containers.

Shaun Rollinson, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Tony Thank you for your review. I am pleased that you enjoyed some aspects of your stay with us. i shall be speaking to the delivery company to make sure that they are quieter in the future. The bins are not ours but belong to the train station so your comments will be passed on to them so that they also might take a little more care. Kind Regards Shaun Rollinson GM

User 19/03/2020

I had a stop over at Peterborough on my way to Manchester and went outside the station to get a cup of coffee. I managed to get one from The Great Northern hotel after fruitless efforts of searching. I returned to the platform and only minutes later I was approached by the gentleman called George who served me earlier, with my bank card in his hand. I left it in the chip and pin machine after paying and he left his post to look for me on the platform. This was an exceptional after service by George and a great tribute to the hotel. We need people like George in this world. A massive thank you to him and May his career progression be enhanced as I believe he has everything it takes to be not only management material but also operational level material Thank you so much George and in your own very words “You saved my life” God bless you. Hareef Balogun

"One nights stay "

Sugarfree_candy, London, United Kingdom 15/03/2020

The location is very convenient for the train station and where we had a function on, which is why we chose this hotel. The hotel may have been grand at one point but is now very dated and also smells of old dust to match the old surroundings. We easily checked in and made our way up the creaky stairs to our room. The staff were friendly and helped with our luggage. The room itself was terrible, it smelt of damp and dust as soon as we entered. I opened the window to let some air in. On closer inspection there was dust and cobwebs around. The whole place seemed tired. And the decor is in severe need of an update. The bathroom was hideous and had an unclean smell also. The taps were pretty volatile and there wasn't any smooth running of hot water. After about 20 minutes of being in the room, a staff member knocked on the door to ask me if I had opened the window, I explained I had and asked what the problem is? Apparently some appendages has come loose and fell onto someones head below..... clearly the building needs maintenance work if windows and taps can't do basic functions. The breakfast was fine and staff were good on checkout also. Overall the rooms/bathrooms/creaky stairs need renovation and a good scrub. I wouldn't return and would only recommend for convenience of location. 2/5

Shaun R, General Manager at Great Northern Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Thank you for your review, I am sorry that you were not happy with the room. The building is over 160 years old however, that is no excuse for lack of cleanliness and the removal of cobwebs.Having checked the room there is no evidence of damp and the taps seem to be working fine. The staircase is original and regularly checked for health and safety, and we feel that it is in keeping with the natural decor of the hotel, which is constantly being updated, for example our reception has just been done and there is an ongoing programme for the bedrooms. I shall follow up with my team regarding the issue with the window, so my apologies for this. Regards Shaun Rollinson General Manager
