The breakfast was amazing, location was perfect. It was walking distance to central train and bus station, only a block from the airport train stop. Staff were wonderful. Very few reviews talk about the breakfast but there was something for everyone.

The hotel is in an excellent location. Extremely friendly and helpful reception staff. However the room we received was awful, it was facing an inner roof that had the A/C units and other fans (noisy and ugly). We did receive a better room immediately once we requested to move.

"Low quality hotel with good breakfast"

12/09/2018

This hotel was in the past surely a splendid institutions. However, as time passed, the hotel management was overly sure about its unique location and nobody took care seriously about modernization and refurbishing. The result is very sorry state of the hotel, with uncomfortable beds, noisy and dusty rooms without noise insulation, unattractive bathrooms. The only positive thing during the stay in this hotel was the sumptuous Scandinavian breakfast.

Leiv R, Daglig leder at Best Western Karl Johan Hotell, responded to this review
Dear Martin B It was sad to hear that you were not happy with your stay. The hotel is an old and honorable hotel, with the best location in Oslo. It will please you and all our guests that we will build new rooms and totally renovate our hotel. Hope we can welcome you back. Best regards Leiv R

"Good Location"

I stayed here with my husband for 1 night, the hotel location is excellent, its about 150m from the station and near all the main attractions. The hotel staff were lovely they let us check in early. The hotel itself is old fashioned and full of character. The room itself was small and quite stuffy, but that was due to the unusually hot weather; there was a fan in the room. We did open the window in the night but you can hear street noise, however it is silent when closed. We only stayed here 1 night which was perfect, however had it been longer I would have probably stayed somewhere else.

Great location, lots of restaurants near, very good breakfast, helpful staff, clean room. All main attractions are at walking distance, definitely I'll stay here again in the future. A great destination overall.

"Old classic hotel"

01/09/2018

It can be tough to navigate this hotel. The rooms are cramped but very clean. Not much in terms of amenities, but very clean. We were a small group of which some were older. They put us on the third floor that required stepping down. Not an easy feat with luggage and challenging for someone with a cane. The elevator broke one day, which I did not mind hiking up three floors but for others that created an issue. The hotel overall was in a great location with easy access to shopping and restaurants.

"Excellent location, but cramped, a little worn and crowded."

27/08/2018

The hotel is perfectly located in the centre of Oslo, very central and in close proximity to the heart of the city. However the hotel is clearly a little worn, with obvious holes in the carpet in the hallways. My single room was very small, offering less than 1.5 m from the side of the bed to the opposite wall. The overall impression was cramped and spartan. The wifi worked well, but the dining hall used for breakfast was far too small for the number of guests, so guests continually had to wait for an available table, even when sharing with strangers.

This hotel is situated in Karl Johangate. It is in the heart of Oslo..Across the road is a beautiful park with fountains too. Also walking distance from Oslo main station and harbor. A very good breakfast is included. The staff is very friendly and helpful.

A tawdry, frayed hotel chain at the best of times, confirmed by the mistake of booking this one in Oslo (in an attempt to find a reasonably priced hotel). We arrived at 4pm, corridors are full of wheeled crates of dirty laundry which had their own unique odor, a separate faint smell of cabbage and threadbare carpets. Frankly, depressing. Room was small with a vast window, no air-con and a hastily rigged fan. We had to leave window open all night but we were then woken repeatedly by street noises (assorted bin noises, people shouting, lorries passing, road works which seemed to go all night and car doors slamming). In short, dreadful and way overpriced.

This is right in the middle of scenic Oslo. 10 minute walk from train station. Nice staff. Fine 1899 building. Excellent breakfast buffet. Fast free wifi. No air conditioning usually not an issue but was warm during unusually hot July. We will stay again

25/07/2018

Had a room on the second floor. It was HOT in Olso, and there's no a/c. Hotel provided a fan and the giant patio door windows opened entirely (nightmare with young kids, but absolute heaven for adults - it made the heat bearable). The giant windows that opened also let us sit down with drinks and feel like we had a restaurant table on the street. Fantastic grand staircase gave it some charm as well. Breakfast was good, though the top floor room was always roasting hot. REAL tea (twinnngs), for which they get an extra star! Location is superb for town and catching the tram/bus.

Excellent location on Karl Johan Gata, the grand boulevard from the Parliament to the Royal Palace. Fifteen minute walk from Central Station. Beautiful park on one side. Many restaurants. Walking distance to harbor, opera house, Ibsen House, several museums. Ask for a room on the park side for good views and people watching. Buffet breakfast was enormous. Front desk staff very helpful. We had a suite and it was very good value for the money.

We found BW Oslo to be more than excellent for our needs. Staff was extremely helpful; services were very good; location was excellent and a stone throw's away from Akker Brygge, the major museums, the central train station; underground...what have you. btw breakfast was good and varied - contrary to what some posts might have indicated. And the rooms were always very very clean.

"Great location but no AC."

4
14/06/2018

Booked with points for a two night stay. Love the location, the building, the decor, the huge winding staircase with the gilded mirrors and artwork. The breakfast was great compared to a US BW, but sub-par for a European hotel of this class. The big downer for me, and others that have reviewed this hotel is the lack of AC. When we were there it was after the heat wave of May/early June, with nice external temperatures of around the mid 70's, but the room was hot. We had the provided fan on and the window open and I still had trouble sleeping. From Oslo airport we took the "Flytoget" express train, for 190NOK, to the National Theater stop (second stop). This only took around 25 minutes and this train runs every ten minutes. The hotel is a ten minute walk from the station, or about 550 meters.

"Great location for a tourist hotel"

10/06/2018

There were 4 of us who stayed at the hotel. My Aunt and my mother had a fabulous room with a view while my friend and I were down the hall in an inside room. We were close to the train and the hop on hop off bus. We were also within walking distance of the opera house, the fortress and the wharf area. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was okay, but I have to admit that I was spoiled by the breakfast buffet in Iceland. The stay was enjoyable even though we were in Oslo during a heat wave.

"Excellent service - shame there's no air condition"

03/06/2018

We visited Oslo June 1st-3rd, 2018, during a really warm period (30C/86F). It was almost unbearably hot in the room, even with a small fan going. When we checked in, we were given rooms facing Karl Johan - this was a big mistake. Noise from the neighboring restaurants kept us awake until at least 3am. If we had been able to close the windows it would possibly have been ok, but the heat prevented that. However, when asking to change rooms the next morning the very professional and service-minded receptionist Zara gace us new rooms right away and we were even given the keys right away so we could move whenever it suited us and check the rooms beforehand to see if they were ok. They were facing the back courtyard, so the view wasn't very nice, but it was quiet! Overall, the hotel has an unrivalled location when visiting Oslo; EVERYTHING is within walking distance (or at least you can walk to public transportation within 2-5 minutes). The staff is very nice, this goes for everyone we interacted with, the rooms are good sized and nice (although a little bit worn), the beds are very nice and the breakfast is really good. There's only two possible drawbacks: 1) No aircondition - this would probably not be a problem when it's not unusually hot like it was during our visit. 2) Rooms facing Karl Johan may be bothered by noise from restaurants - unless you can close the windows or like a lively atmosphere :) Would definitively recommend and will go back for a later stay!

"Rude concierge on Constitution Day at Karl Johan "

28/05/2018

I had my wallet/credit cards etc stolen in Berlin early May at Tegal Airport. I cancelled all cards and “Hotel One”Hauptbahnhof. One call to the other side of the world and my daughter sent all her visa particulars through. I expected an Intrim card to arrive in Budapest which unfortunately did not . My stay in Geneva, Belgrade was not problem. When I arrived in Oslo Best Western Karl Johan on 17/5/2017 the lass at the desk all of twenty odd yrs of age and following my explanation, said it was impossible for me to use another persons visa particulars. I said Geneva and Belgrade have had no problems with payment given three weeks prior. Her reply “but we are not in Geneva or Belgrade now are we?”, I asked to speak with the manager, after much deliberation a phone call was made I overheard her say my and the persons credit card are not the same name, tired frustrated that I the victim was treated as though I was the credit card thief? immediately interjected, it was my daughters married name, I said I'll call my son he has the same surname. Manager obviously understood my circumstances. When I said I can see your problem young lady and it isn't me, obviously you're here working whilst your piers are outside celebrating and you're not happy.....her reply... “you havnt got your key yet” she won, touché BTW everything she said was with a forced smile. I am a lady of 66yrs of age, where has the respect gone?.

I stayed at this hotel in March 2018. Very good location. Walking distance to the central station. Do not use taxis from the central station. Always recommended to use Uber. Friendly and supportive front office staff. Allocated room was very small. No proper space to store luggage in the room.

"Poor room"

21/05/2018

This hotel is in a fabulous setting right in the heart of Oslo. It's within walking distance of Aker Brygge, Akershus, the Opera and the Stations. The view from our bedroom was diabolical. (see the photos) We were on the top floor. In the high wind the wind howled around in the roof space and plastic was flapping loudly (I suspect this also was in the roof space.) There was no room safe and no tea/coffee making facilities in the room - only an unbelievably expensive mini bar! Large trolleys were lined up in the corridor outside our room! We've stayed here before but this time our luck was out when it came to room allocation! Also, no bacon available at breakfast! There was no drawer storage in the room only a small hanging area and a luggage rack.

"Centrally located with everything you need for a nice city trip"

19/05/2018

Very well located, centrally in the middle of many things to visit (Royal Palace, National Gallery, City Hall and Harbour, National Theatre,...) Very convenient to visit everything within walking distance. Very nice stairway hall with forged iron railings. Breakfast buffet is offers everything you could wish for in a breakfast and provides cookies for glutenfree allergies! Disappointing however that WIFI wasn't working from the second day onwards and that they couldn't get it repaired within the 4 days we stayed there. Luckily most musea and places to visit offer free wifi. Quite some street noise though, hard to sleep with open windows. But windows are very good in isolating noise as with close windows all was quiet.

27/02/2018

We stayed here for 3 nights. The room which I booked as a superior was very clean. The beds were two singles with the continental style duvets, we did feel that a double duvet would of been far better. You had to ask for tea and coffee facilities for the room, although this was not mentioned at check in and we only knew because we saw other people carrying trays to their rooms. The sound proofing of the room was not very good and we did have disturbed sleep from noise from other rooms and the corridor outside the room. The hotel is well situated in the centre of Oslo and most places of interest were within easy walking distance.

23/02/2018

This hotel is 10 minutes walk from central station and is the Main Street with shops and many tourists attractions. Hotel overlooking an ice arena. We had a room at back of hotel but got upgraded to junior suite on front. Reception staff very friendly and helpful. Old fashioned looking staircase is beautiful. Breakfast was included and was very good. Lots of variety from waffles to cereals, meats, cheeses, breads eggs and hot food. Parliament building is across and palace at other end of street.

"Classic hotel - great location - okay rooms"

23/02/2018

The Best Western Karl Johan Hotell is definitely one of the best BWs I have stayed at. The hotel interior and exterior is 'classic' and surprisingly nice. The rooms itself are a bit small and basic, but there are too many upsides to this hotel for this to be an issue. The location is great and the price is very reasonable, too. Breakfast was quite good and the staff was very friendly. I would stay here again, mostly because of the great location and the reasonable price.

18/02/2018

It is a decent hotel nearby the city centre including breakfast. Not sure however on the prices as it was in NOK currency. Rooms are clean yet a bit dated; floor could for sure have a swipe as my shoes were almost sticking to it with every step i took. Staff is friendly All in all good enough.

"Tired hotel."

2
11/02/2018

Visited for one night on way to Svalbard. It has a central location, although it is a long uphill walk from central station if you have heavy cases. The staff were friendly and efficient but the hotel is very tired and really needs a complete refit. We had a so called superior room, I wouldn't like to guess what a standard room is like. Strange smell in room, quite dusty and floor under bed not clean. Not a good choice if you want a good nights sleep as there was loud music outside the room until the early hours of the morning.

Leiv R, Daglig leder at Best Western Karl Johan Hotell, responded to this review

"Winter break to Oslo"

4
08/02/2018

Central location with the Royal Palace and Parliament at either end of the road. Price reasonable for Oslo standards. Great view of Karl Johan's Gate if you have a room that faces the front. Staff friendly and accommodating. Short walk to the harbour and opera house. 10 mins from train station and 15 mins from bus station. Breakfast is a wise move for how much food costs in Oslo! The breakfast was probably the best hotel breakfast I've had. Lots of choice of hot food, salad bar, fresh fruit, cereal, bread, waffles. Catering for allergies they had gluten free, lactose free and vegan options.

04/02/2018

The hotel is in an excellent location, just on Karl Johan. Excellent for sightseeing, many restaurants and shopping. Just a short walk to Aker Brygge/Tjuvholmen and to the Opera. We had o twin room. Not very big, but clean and more than OK for a city break. The sleeping comfort was good, comfortable beds, but we had a room on the 1st floor and it was some noise from the surrounding street (not from other rooms or guests). I would recommend to ask for a room on a higher floor. The breakfast was god, should be enough to choose from for most people. Free wi-fi.

Nice clean modern hotel with good customer service. Breakfast has a good spread and the coffee is also good. Hotel within walking distance from the Main Station. This was a great hotel. Friendly staff, clean and good location (middle of the center, close to the train station). Better then expected, but then again we got a suite, which was HUGE. Only minor thing is the street noise. If you have a room at street side, beware that in weekends (friday en saterday) it can be noisy.

"Centraly located"

04/02/2018

The hotel is situated in the center of Oslo, a couple of minutes walk to the central station. The breakfast is absolutely delicious. the room that I stayed in was a bit small, but as a tourist I wanted a clean room with a good bed, and this had both, the bathroom was always clean, and nice and warm. The view from the room that I had was not good at all, so if you book, book a room with a view over the street.

"Great location and atmospheric"

13/01/2018

We stayed here for the New Year. the hotel is very well located and it is easy to walk everywhere. It is near two metros , National Theatret and Oslo central station and also bus routes. It is just opposite the seasonal Christmas market. We found it very easy to travel from the airport to the centre and then just a ten minute walk to the hotel. Our room was compact but warm and comfortable. The breakfast buffet was extensive with hot and cold items and there was plenty of seating. A few items actually ran out altogether including berries to go with the yogurt. The staff on reception were friendly, helpful and efficient. The hotel itself is fairly old so full of character.

08/01/2018

Stayed over the festive period, and selected the hotel due to location. Was not disappointed, markets across the street, and easy walking distance to all city central locations. Room was very small up on the top floor. This could be because of the room type, and the furnishings were a little 'tired'. However, it was comfy, easy to keep warm and everything worked well including the wifi. Customer service. We had limited interactions with staff as we were coming and going all the time. However, the lady that was on reception over Christmas eve, Christmas day and Boxing day (short dark hair, glasses) was very chatty and friendly and I would highlight her hard work as being a positive.

"Superb, Quaint&Historic lodging in Very Heart of Oslo"

I paid a modest $223US for 2 nights in an expensive town. This included a wonderful breakfast that spared me an expensive breakfast.elsewhere. The location was superb for someone with luggage. The Christmas market was literally under my window. I could shop, return packages to my room and go right back down to the market. The airport train station is an easy walk from the front door, even with 2 luggages. The Art museum and history museum are a few blocks away and there is no need for cabs or busses if you are going to the harbor or city hall. My room was quite large by European standards with adittional chairs and furnishings .It had a step up into the bathroom and large windows with a view. The breakfast was served in a cozy dining room and offered almost anything hot or cold you could want, including waffles, eggs, sausage, Smoked fish, and Norweigen cheese. The antique stairswells were beautiful and hallways were tastefully decorated with classic furnishings and paintings. The staff were helpful especially Irene who gave me directions and tourist advice. I would reccomed this place and would stay there again.

"Lousy customer service and good location hotel"

One of the worst hotels we've ever stayed at after traveling to so many countries. We've had three encounters with this hotel during my family's stay in Oslo during the month of December 2017. We checked in on 15-17 Dec , 21 Dec and 26 -30 December 2017. I have summarized the pros/cons of this hotel as below : 1. Old but with a fantastic location , facing Christmas market and near to Nationaltheatret station . 2. Breakfast is fine - meets the average Norwegian hotel standard. But breakfast starts on 7am on weekdays and 8am on weekends. Even though hotel staff said that customers who need to leave early can pack their breakfast, no plastic/paper containers are provided. The kitchen staff will only assist in packing the food in cling wrap. 3. The room numbers on the third floor are not arranged in sequence. Two room numbers which are in sequence can be located at different parts of the floor. 4. There is a strong cigarette smell in some of the toilets. 5. For rooms facing the street, music and sound can be heard till midnight from the pub downstair. 6. No security measures in place for baggages left in their care as the hotel staff allows the customer to take and leave baggages by themselves without supervision. 7. The room on the 5th floor has an odd smell like they have not been used for quite some time and the internet connection does not function there. 8. Most of staff doesn't care or have bad service attitude - including the female manager. She has very impatient and rude attitude when we talk to her. We were handled by a woman named Diana. She has a smiling face but never listen to guests' feedback or attends to guests' need. She likes to lie to guest. When we requested for change to opposite room as afraid the noise from the pub will affect our sleep again, she told us there is no double room opposite our room, all are single rooms . In fact , I found out later that room 411 is a double room. She might think all the guests are dumb. We politely request her to arrange two rooms next to /opposite each other before our 5 days trip to Svalbard . When we returned on 26 Dec , she said she has arranged two nice rooms upon our request . The rooms are located at same floor with distance of about 5 rooms in between . One of the room is at the end of 4th floor, room 401 , which I believe is one of the smaller double room with odd size door. The bathroom is small enough and with no shower screen . So, the bathroom will flood every time after my children took bath . She told us too that the hotel is not allow customer to view the room before booking. This is the first time i heard this kind of rule practice in hotels throughout the world , from metropolitan hotel in New York 5th Avenue to countryside hotel in Myamnar . Again, she might think all the guests are dumb. In short, this is a “hotel with super lousy service but a fantastic location “. I think the management should re-train their staff on customer service. Lying to guests is really a ‘ no no ‘ way in hospitality line . Lim Singapore

In a town where "well-price" isn't spoken all that often, the Best Western represents pretty good value. The location is convenient to the shops and public transport, and the area itself is very nice and good for walking. The hotel is pretty basic, but perfectly clean and the staff are also very accommodating.

The location is great. Smacked in the middle of the city center. Business lounge is clean with a coffee machine and tea on hand but it's in the other end of the bldg from where my room was. A bit of a maze to memorize to go there, but no problemo. Breakfast was good, clean and prompt service. People were dressed in office attire for breakie and I was in my night gown. ??

Superb location in the heart of the city. We had a room on the third floor and it was lovely and quiet Really spacious and clean room with a large bathroom with a walk in shower. Very nice breakfast. Served, on Sundays from 0800 - 1100. Hot and cold selection very good quality and in plentiful supply No tea / coffee facilities in our room but there was a free coffee machine on the third floor in the conference type room. Would have preferred in room facility if given choice. Really nice surprise to have a midday check out too Would have been top marks, however 1) We were overlooked at reception when trying to check in by obvious and blatant queue jumpers, and 2) The towels in the room were (as usual) small. You are a large grand and bordering on old fashioned opulence. Provide large towels or bath sheets !, and finally 3) I would expect facilities inside my room to make a hot drink All in all would recommend and would stay again

This hotel has one of the best locations in Oslo, at Karl Johan. This is excellent for shopping and sightseeing. The hotel looks a bit tired, but the room was clean and the furnitures looked quite new. I had a standard single room, and found that to be small, but sufficient. I could have liked a small fridge, that was the one thing I missed. Breakfast was good. The overall service was attentive and friendly.

18/11/2017

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights as my normal choice was fully booked. It is located close to the Hotel Grand and on the main road leading up to the parliament buildings. It's a 10 minute walk from the train station which is only 20 mins from main airport, this is why we choose this area. It's located on Karl Johan and is close to all the main shops and restaurants. The hotel staff were friendly and the room was very nice if not a bit small. The bathroom was big in proportion and the shower was really powerful, again I had to ask for kettle which is frustrating. Overall I would recommend this hotel as a good stop over for one or 2 nights.

Location in city centre, beside railway station. Lot of restaurants nearby. Hard rock cafe only 30m from outdoor. Rooms are on basic level, absolutely no luxus, but good basic level. Very high comfort on beds. Breakfast was full of different choices, and food quality was on enough high quality. Price level during the week was quite high.

"Classic hotel in a great location!"

25/10/2017

The hotel is located on Karl Johan Gate, which is right in the heart of all of the shopping and restaurants you could ever need and also very close to two or three large subway stops if you want to venture even farther from the area. The property itself is gorgeous. It is a little dated design-wise, but that is because it is constructed inside a building from the late 1800s - with lots of mirrored and wooden design touches and a beautiful central staircase. The fact that it is built in such an historic building also has its negatives (though they are quite minimal): the rooms have large vaulted ceilings but are actually quite small when it comes to the square footage to walk around or store your bags. The beds are comfortable but take up the majority of the space of the room. The bathroom was nice and spacious compared to others I have seen in Europe. There is also a large arm chair in the room (which can be used to stack luggage if you need more space!) The rooms also can get quite hot in the late summer and early autumn months, after you've been trekking all day and come back to rest. We were able to keep the window ajar to let some of the cool night air in, so I would recommend doing that if you get too hot. The free breakfast is wonderful. Lots of hot and cold options to choose from: waffles, sausages, beans, eggs, fruit, cereal, yogurt, and many more options. Also some great juices and coffee. Food can be very very expensive in Oslo so I recommend taking advantage of the breakfast so you can knock out one big meal of the day before you head out! I would say this was a good hotel overall based on the location and the lower price (when Oslo accommodations are usually so expensive). Take advantage of the free breakfast and the public transport being so close (Nationaltheatret and Stortinget stations are both very close)!

I absolutely loved my stay here for many reasons: its perfectly centralized location; its old world charm meets modern vibes, it's delicious and varied breakfast buffet, the spacious and comfortable rooms and most of all, it's excellent staff! Kara, Diana, Mona and Christian made sure that I had insider tips on where to go, what to do and how to pay less. They were all professional, courteous and genuinely helpful. I felt right at home the minute I arrived and checked in. This place is great value for the money and I have already recommended it to friends. I will stay here again upon my next visit to Oslo.

06/10/2017

Anyone wanting a reasonably priced very centrally located hotel will be happy with this. On the positive side, the check-in and check-out were super fast and efficient. The staff were very friendly and the breakfast was good. The only slight negatives concerned the room. Ours was very small and rather worn and tired. Some basic amenities were missing such as no drawer space, limited wardrobe space no shelf by the handbasin to put toiletries on. However, all things considered I would go back.

03/10/2017

A very pleasant stay in central Oslo. This is a great location with the Royal Palace to the right, Parliament to the left and just a 5 minute walk to the waterfront. We enjoyed a very generous sized room and an excellent breakfast. The only downsides were that (common in mainland Europe) the room was too hot and there was a lack of storage. Recommended.

"I Still Don't Know What to Think"

02/10/2017

After spending four nights at the Best Western Karl Johann I'm still not sure what to make of the place. There are a lot of positives, but there are also an equal number of negatives. In terms of the pros, you can't beat this hotel's location. It is in the heart of everything. Step out the front door and the Norwegian Parliament is directly across to the left. Up to the right a few blocks in the Royal Palace. Shopping and restaurants abound all around it. Plus, the breakfast offered each morning was quite nice. There was not only a decent selection of items to choose from but despite the bustle of the breakfast room I never struggled to find a place to sit. There were plenty of tables and space to spread out. And, the price is right. For a hotel in the heart of Oslo I was a little surprised at the deal I got. It was incredibly affordable in an otherwise very expensive city. On the negative side, though, my room felt like a closet in need of renovation. As a solo traveler this no doubt explains the size of my room, but even by European standards it was downright claustrophobic. The bed was shoved in the corner and there was just enough room to get by. My bathroom, although clean, had a shower drain in the middle of the floor with no real grading to speak of. As a result, every time I showered water went everywhere. I had to use towels to build a barrier to keep the water from running out across the floor and into the rest of the room. And one day housekeeping never came. I left at 8:30 am and put the sign on my door requesting the room be serviced (a critical need given the pile of wet towels on the floor). Yet when I returned at 5:00 that evening it hadn't been touched. I asked the front desk about it, and to their credit they directed someone from housekeeping to tend to my room, but I got the impression that had I not asked for it nothing would have been done - despite the sign requesting attention. Overall, this was an acceptable place to stay, but I wouldn't say I left the Best Western Karl Johann feeling very enthusiastic.

"Convenient hotel in the center of Oslo"

21/09/2017

This hotel has such a convenient location, 10 min by foot away from Oslo Central Station, 10 min by foot away from another very important site which is the Aker Brygge. There is a metro nearby and you can take the bus or tram to any touristic site by just walking about 7 min. It is also located in the heart of Karl Johan Street where the shopping options are all there. The hotel has spacious rooms, clean but no air conditioning, though I don;t think it would be much needed in Olso. The breakfast is typically continental. The front office staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel offers continuous free coffee and tea, which is a nice gesture.

This hotel definitely charges for the location! The hotel rooms have old furnishings in need of renovation and updating. The front desk and reception areas are also old. "Our first visit to Oslo - a perfect choice of Hotel."

14/09/2017

My daughter and I stayed at this lovely Hotel last weekend. What a perfect location for our first visit to Oslo - positioned at the far end of Karl Johan Gate, a short walk from the station, with the Parliament building to one side and the Royal Palace a five minute walk away. The Hotel is an old building in appearance though the interior is gorgeous with interesting paintings adorning the walls and gold light fittings and mirrors. Reception staff are very pleasant and helpful. We requested a quiet room by email and were allocated a room on the fourth floor at the back of the hotel which we were pleased about.. There was a little noise from what appeared to be a heating system but it did not bother us too much. The room was very spacious with a small wardrobe and table, TV, and a mini bar and fridge. The bathroom was compact with a sink, and a walk in shower, and hairdryer. There was no kettle in our room but on the third floor there is a communal lounge area where you can help yourself to tea/coffee etc., Breakfast was served on the fourth floor, conveniently right next to our room! My daughter was very impressed with the provision of both soya milk and lactose free milk! There was a choice of cereals, cooked breakfast, fruit, bread etc., as well as fruit juice and tea/coffee. You can pick up lunch in any of the deli shops near the Hotel, We found a really lovely Vegan restaurant called Norvegan round the corner from the Hotel opposite the Ice bar and we found ourselves eating there each evening during our 3 night stay. This was our very first visit to this beautiful City, and we both agree that the choice of Hotel was perfect for us! Thank you for a most enjoyable stay!

The room was tiny, but it suited me well because I was traveling solo. For couples or families traveling, they should look for rooms at least triple the size of single occupancy rooms. The breakfast was good. The best part about the hotel is how it is located in the ideal location in Oslo - either 5 or 10 minutes away from every major tourist spot and surrounded by restaurants.

09/09/2017

This hotel was very easy to get to from airport, just catch the direct train to National theatret station and it is one block from exit. Loved Karl Johan street with its shops, restaurants and fountains. We found it very easy to use the public transport from this hotel. The hotel itself is a lovely old building. We were given a small dark room first but we went back to Christian at reception who was always very helpful and he gave us a lovely big room on the 3rd floor with a small balcony which was nice to watch the world go by below. The room itself was spacious and the bathroom a good size but it had no shelves. Had to store toiletries on table on lounge area. The bathroom is so big I don't understand why they haven't installed some shelving. There was no safe in the room but there was a fridge. Breakfast was great and varied. We got this hotel at a good price and would happily return. We loved Oslo, its clean and people are very friendly.

This hotel is located at the one of the most important streets in Oslo and opposite the Norwegian parliament, royal palace, city hall and other main attractions are on walking distance. 02/09/2017

Location is great. We had a large room and appreciated it. Hotel interior old with wear and tear and some "reminders" of previous guests.Staff friendly but communication among the shifts is not working. We got 2 room keys.Every time we left we had to go down to have them "recoded" as they did not work...after the 8th time (so we were patient) we asked reception to join. Battery or whatever did not work snd night guard had to fix it.Luckily we were planning to go out. We were offered late check out. Our feeling told us to double check (it is now 02:20 a.m.) as we only have our flights in the evenings...Guess what...no remark. We were first offered it for a fee. After insisting we were graciously offered an hour...Other hotels offer a partial refund...here they offer an additional hour...If you have the patience to go back to reception everytime you like to get to your room and love curtains with stains...this is it for you...breakfast is ok.Sorry for the staff as management should train their organisational skills and refurbish the place

"Charming Hotel in the center of everything"

5
01/09/2017

This was the best hotel I stayed at in Norway. The hotel has maintained its classic charm. Staff was friendly and helpful. Rooms are large, bedding new, bathrooms updated. Breakfast was an A+ with many hot and cold options. I did not want to stay at an American chain hotel while I traveled Norway, but this one felt more like a family hotel than a chain. There is a park across the street and Karl Johan Gate is open only to pedestrians. The only warning is that Oslo is undergoing a building boom, so if you leave the windows open at night you will likely hear it. It seemed to go through the night.

"Perfect location when visiting Oslo"

22/08/2017

We had used TA to find a central hotel and this proved ideal for us. Only 10 mins walk from Oslo central station or 5 mins from a Metro stop. Hotel reception settled us in and explained everything. Lift to rooms and ours was a good sixed with view over front street. Bathroom was large and clean and bed was very comfortable. Mini Bar in room and free wifi. Safe was also available. Breakfasts were great and had every combination. The area was quite tight and movement around the main island to collect fruit etc was too tight in our opinion. There was also a conference room lounge on the 3rd floor that had free drinks. Availability of milk for drinks was an issue and we took milk from breakfast back to our room and left in mini bar. All the staff were helpful and friendly. The double glazing was effective and whilst on the 4th floor we heard very little from the busy street below. There are lots of restaurants within a few hundred yards of the hotel and a park area opposite. We bought The Oslo Pass and saved a lot on restaurants and museums. Public transport was effective and it was a 5-10 min walk to the harbour. An ideal location for visiting Oslo.

This hotel is beautiful with a great view of the City located on Karl Johans Gate (the main road), centrally located with lots of dining choices. Coffee and tea are always available in the lobby. Every floor has different art works, take a walk through each floor. Our room on the 5th floor had a bed and a pull out sofa which was very comfortable. The breakfast buffet was fabulous and creative, lots of special dishes to try. I commend the kitchen staff for coming up with something new everyday. There are 3 dining areas, so don't panic if you can't find a table, just keep walking. Grab a sandwich from the convenience store on the corner or buy a packed lunch in the breakfast room at the hotel and have a picnic at the fortress. Do your wallet a favor and try a local meal at Kaffistova located at Rosenkrantz' gate 8 less than a block away. I can't brag enough about this perfect location, I only wish we could have stayed longer!

We stayed at this hotel for three nights in July. The hotel is in a great location, within easy walking distance to most of the (tourist-centric) day and night life of Oslo. The hotel is a bit of a rabbit warren; full of little corridors and side corridors. Once we found our room (!), it was facing the internal light courtyard, looking out to and down on a heap of air-conditioning units. Not particularly great. The room itself was quite spacious, including the bathroom. The bathroom was clean, but older style. I did notice when walking past a couple of other rooms facing the street that their bathrooms had been recently renovated, so I guess they're working through them. We found the room quite hot - there was no cooling option. We asked for, and were provided with, a small plug-in fan. The bed was comfortable. There were no options for pillows other than those already in the room (way too soft for us). We did not experience any night time noise. Breakfast was okay. Just. The wait staff were struggling to keep up with clearing tables and replacing empty food in the small buffet. In fact, we went later (just after 9am) one day and there was almost nothing left, and many items weren't being replaced/replenished. It was incredibly hot (to the point of being quite uncomfortable) in the breakfast room each day. Overall, this is a reasonable value hotel for the location, considering it's Norway. I'd probably look at other options when next in Oslo - perhaps AirBnB.

"Charming hotel with super staff"

My wife and I stayed in room 514, a spacious suite, for four nights. This room was a corner room, on the top floor and with three opening windows. There was a lovely view over the square and towards the parliament building. We had very politely been greeted at reception. Quick and efficient. The hotel was a lovely old building and had an impressive iron staircase, partly obscured by a false ceiling near reception. The hotel is ideally located near the nation theatre metro and train station, very easy to get there from them airport. It is near the centre and within easy walking distance of the palace, museums and sea front. Room furnishing were minimalistic. A wooden floor, small table, desk, wardrobe, two small bedside tables, large sofa bed and a suitcase stand. The bed was a large double on legs with separate duvets. Bedside lighting was excellent, comprising an adjustable spotlight and a standard light. There was a large tv with Sky news. One interesting feature of the room and hotel were the drawings and paintings of nude women! The bathroom was a small step up from the short hall and comprised an bath, washbasin, WC and shower over the bath. Impressively, towels had tabs for hanging on hooks. Hot water was always available and had a good pressure. Soap was available by the sink and over the bath from a dispenser. One minor fault was that the extractor fan did not seem to work. An information sheet in the room stated that face cloths were available at reception. We asked but the receptionist could not find any. Breakfast opens at 0700 on weekdays but 0800 at weekends. It comprised natural yoghurt, cereals, bread of several types, fruit juices, fresh melon on the rind, coffee, tea, small cake cubes, waffles, crisp reads, biscuits, cooked food, cold meats, cheese and vegetables. There were always several people having breakfast at 0700 and it was not easy to move around people and get the items we wanted. Worse was Saturday when we arrived just before it was supposed to open at 0800, only to find it was very busy and had clearly been open before 0800, it was very difficult to move round the people getting their food and drink. Items quickly ran out and it was sometimes minutes before they were replaced. A delight was the excellent tasting coffee. We later learned from reception that a coach party had come in the previous day and were going out that morning. We had to miss breakfast on the Sunday because we had to leave before 0800 to get a train to the airport. 0800 is far too late to open for breakfast. Coffee was available in the rooms, but better was that in the business Lounge on floor three. Wifi was free, good and seemed faster than average. In conclusion, a excellently situated comfortable hotel for exploring Oslo. All staff were very friendly and polite.

Great location on the same street as the Royal Palace and Parliament. 2 blocks away from harbor and close to shopping. Hotel is dated. Rooms have no amenities...liquid soap dispenser only, no shampoo, no moisturizer, no coffee maker, no pen, no paper...every short cut taken to make money. Staff is ok. No parking, Parking is 3 blocks away and you pay the full rate. Hotel does not even have a guest rate with them. Rooms overlook alleys and central area with air conditioning equipment and staff filling trash dumpsters at 6 AM.

Best Western's vary a lot, and this one is very average compared to other ones I have stayed at. My room, though quiet, was jammed between the elevator shaft and 2 corridors and is one of the strangest shaped rooms I have been in! That said the bed was comfortable and the bathroom serviceable. Breakfast buffet was also OK. It is in a great location, some 10 minutes walk from the Central Station. It has a great staircase!

"Good location but otherwise poor"

29/07/2017

The hotel is centrally located to the sites, restaurants, shopping and the train station. However, the rooms and bathrooms are very small and dark and the hotel is old and somewhat "seedy." They advertised coffee and tea in the room, but this was not available. The breakfast was okay but did not have a vast variety. The help was not especially friendly and the first thing we were asked (even before being greeted) was how we wanted to pay. Fortunately we were only there for one night. I would not stay there again.

"Central Location and... that's the only good thing I could say"

27/07/2017

Stayed there for a night with my wife. The hotel is centrally located which is a big plus but unfortunately this is the only good thing I could say about this hotel. The hotel building is quite old with one small elevator serving all floors. This is a major problem during rush hour - checking out, breakfast time etc. half of the rooms are not facing the street but actually facing the central yard which is full of noisy and hot machinery. You open the window and want some air? Forget about it. During summer time these rooms become hotter than the outside temperature. Privacy is also a problem with these rooms as you can easily see other rooms which also tried to get some air and leave the windows open. We were given a small fan but it was noisy and weak and we barely slept overnight. Our room had a 2 level floor - entrance and bathroom on one level and the bed itself was on a lower level. As the room itself isn't big this is an unnecessary step which can become dangerous. Breakfast is on the 4th floor, almost no ventilation (a problem during summer time). Food choice is OK but limited. I wouldn't recommend this hotel. The internal rooms should be deemed inhabitable for humans.

"Perfect location"

22/07/2017

We traveled to Oslo from Australia, and found this place to be amazing. This hotel has a nice feel about it, in an old building situated almost in the dead centre of Oslo. The staff are friendly and the rooms are clean. Added bonus is if you keep your 'do not disturb' sign on your door, the friendly staff will leave you fresh clean towels every day even if they don't clean your room. The bathroom in the room that we stayed in, was difficult to use. There is just a shower curtain that separates the shower from the rest of the bathroom. Son after a shower you will find that the entire bathroom is wet. However, the floors in the bathroom are heated and they dry quick with the heating on. There is no air conditioning in the room that we stayed in, but there were amazing double door windows which opened to let in the beautiful clean Norwegian air breeze through the room. The breakfast supplied here is amazing, this is one of the only places in the world I've stayed at that supplies 'lactose free' milk. The rest of the buffet is amazing too, from scrambled eggs to waffles, cereal and fruit. Beautiful breakfasts, which you will want to make the most of, especially since Norway is ridiculously over priced! A taxi ride from the airport to this hotel is about a 30 minute drive and the overpriced taxi will cost you 1500-1800 Kron ($250 AUD). This is outrageous... uber isn't available at the airport so that's not possible, however the return uber price isn't that much cheaper 1200-1600 kron. There is a bar fridge in the rooms which is good, however there is no kettle for you coffee lovers. There is a coffee machine that operates down stairs in the lobby and the coffees are average! We travelled to Oslo in the summer time and the strangest part for us was the sun setting at almost midnight and rising again at about 4 am. Your body clock may struggle here, and you may be fooled into believing the shops are still open, but when the sun is still hot at 9pm all the shops are closed. The eateries are usually open to late though, and there are plenty to chose from. As soon as you walk out of the hotel, you'll be greeted with an amazing city and will be within walking distance from all that you need to see and do. This is one gorgeous city. If it wasn't so over priced it would be perfect. I do recommend this hotel, and would be shocked if any one didn't like it. It is ok the best possible location one could ask for. Safe travels.

Situated on Johan Karl gate, around -9 minutes walk from the train station, the hotel has a very good location. Quite touristy with tgi Friday and Irish bar below but no noise came up through to the third floor. My room was small but it was just me so it wasn't bad. The hotel is more of a classic hotel with its furniture and decor so don't expect modernity. Wifi signal was good. Friendly staff on reception. Breakfast was quite good - help yourself buffet.

"Best Location and Service"

16/06/2017

I regularly stay at Best Western hotels, and found the Oslo Karl Johans BW excellent, as usual. It is a period building (early 1900s?) but had modern bathroom facilities and up-to-date linens and bedroom furniture. The staff was very friendly, kind, helpful, and professional the entire stay. The location is perfect for seeing local sites, near to shopping, restaurants, and fronts a nice park between the Parliament and Royal Palace. Prices competitive with other hotels in Oslo. Our room faced the street (Karl Johans) which was always busy with people day and night (not so much cars, as it's a pedestrian only street), but relatively little noise with windows closed.

"Tale of two rooms - Avoid 5th Floor"

06/06/2017

There's a reason so many reviews mention the location of this hotel...that really is most of what it has going for it. I had a lot of trouble choosing an Oslo hotel. Nearly every one had a lot of complaints! With that in mind, I chose the BW Karl Johan because of it's reasonable price and good location. When we arrived, I thought I had made a huge mistake. We were assigned to room 516 on the top floor. The room was dark, looked dirty (old, dusty carpet), had a chair that was visibly worn and there was a disgusting musty smell coming from the drain in the bathroom. A maintenance person came up, shrugged his shoulders and poured something down the drain. Then I complained to reception and the person there was quite nice. She allowed me to check three other rooms. They were all MUCH better than the rooms on the 5th floor - still run-down, but not smelly. We ended up with room 426, which I highly recommend if you are traveling with a kid. The sitting area was in a separate room from the bedroom, which gave us lots of extra space. The windows on the lower floors are much larger, so rooms are brighter. And the bedroom had wood floors instead of carpet, so it seemed a little cleaner. The best part was the heated floor in the bathroom. The hotel really needs a renovation. The only toiletries provided were soap and shampoo in dispensers. The carpet really needs a good cleaning and the rooms have very little storage...particularly given that they're decent size for a European hotel. Some shelving and drawers would be a big help. I've never been in a hotel that had so much space yet still no place to put anything. The breakfast was quite good. Nice selection including cereals, eggs, breads, meats, cheeses, etc. The main thing lacking was fresh fruit. There was a fruit bowl, but other than that they just had one thing out each day -- watermelon one day and some other kind of (not-quite-ripe) melon the other days. All in all it turned out to be a fine stay with our second room. Oh, another thing to note is that several rooms face Karl Johan Gate. While the view is nice, it is a busy and noisy street. Our second room (426) faced two back courtyards...no view, but quiet and we didn't have to worry about keeping the windows open at night.

The Best Western Karl Johan, Lies in the centre of Oslo on Its main street, this street runs from the Central Station straight through the city to the Royal Palace at the other end. The room: was compact but had everything that one should need for one night. I stayed for five nights and was constrained by the lack of wardrobe and drawer space, there was a hanging and storage area for your suitcase and place to hang outer garments, the room was equipped with usual Norwegian style of double bed (two single divans pushed together) a television but with a limited range of channels,  no kettle or tea and coffee making facilities but there was tea and coffee available in the foyer (note for Brits ensure you take black tea bags with you as there was only fruit and camomile tea on offer). a mini fridge with a selection of beer, wine and spirits but beware,  the contents of the minibar are very expensive, take your own chocolate, nuts, crisps etc. I visited in May during a minor heat wave and was surprised by the heat in the room, the room did not have AC and I was unable to have the windows open due to the street noise during the evening from revelers enjoying the fine weather and during the night due to heavy traffic,  I would therefore recommend that future patrons request a rear facing room during periods of warm weather. The shower room: compact, but again equipped with soap and shower gel dispensers, the shower was clean and gave an abundance of hot water, sufficient fluffy towels and other accoutrements. Food: the hotel serves a Norwegian breakfast wich is very varied and delicious,  the array of food available is plentiful with hot food including fried egg, scrambled eggs,  bacon, beans, sausages and fried potatoes,  a cold buffet of meat, cheese and fish as well as cereals yogurt etc. The hotel does not provide othe meals but there was a plethora of cafes and restaurants all round the area to suit everyone's taste. If you get the munchies there is a 24 hour cafe next door where they sell take away food, ice cream, crisps,  nuts as well as the other guys in the band. Staff: were friendly and helpful and were willing to answer to any questions or arrange other requirements as necessary. Would I stay there again? Certainly, it was central and right in the middle of all the attractions that the turist would want to see.

29/05/2017

I still can't believe we were located in the midst of everything. As King Harald was celebrating his 80th birthday we were treated with marching bands and songsters right in front of our hotel. A comfortable room with a huge window where we could actually sit and watch the street activity.....breakfasts are complete and delicious. We stayed for a while here, and there was always a little bit of something new at the breakfast table. Prices were reasonable, the staff is friendly and oh, so helpful. A few times we, as shoppers, were sent to areas that had us wondering what why we were sent, but at least we got to see the city. This hotel is so centrally located. We hoofed our suitcases up from the train station. It seems the thing to do! Push/pull that case on the cobblestone! Historic building with a grand staircase. Elevator! Well-maintained. Desk personnel helped with phone calls, fax, etc. Only downside is that one morning our door was left ajar by cleaning staff. oh...and another--be careful for that incredible riser of a threshold at the bathroom!

"Stay here only if you don't want to sleep"

27/05/2017

May 27, 2017. Just finished a two night stay (Thursday - Friday). We got a 2nd floor room overlooking Karl Johans Gate. Unseasonably warm -- beautiful days, but no A/C, so windows opening towards street stay open. Sun comes up around 4:30 and sets between 10:00 - 11:00. If you look closely at the pictures of the property you will see outdoor tables -- lots of them. Music, drinking, loud voices until 3 in the morning. Result -- no sleep. Breakfast was good, but crowded -- get there before 8:00. Typical two singles pushed together to make a "double" bed. Older property but well maintained. Why can't European hotels provide wash cloths??

Hotel is in a great location for tourists. We arrived by train and had a short walk to the hotel. It had great character and made a change from some of the newer boutique hotels. Room was very clean and comfortable, with great views. Breakfast was buffet style, with gluten free cereals and bread. Easy to walk to harbour, castle and many restaurants. Would recommend.

"Lovely historic building with modern amenities; Wonderful location"

26/05/2017

This is a lovely building built in 1899. You can see the character in the outside stone carvings and the lovely staircase winding up from the lobby. We were in room 519. It was a decent size for a European hotel with a double bed, comfy chair and desk and chair. The bathroom was a bit spartan with no place to put your toiletries, but that is for us a minor thing. Our room was at the front of the building overlooking the lovely park. Yes, there were definitely restaurants below (we had a farewell drink at one of the sidewalk cafes), but in May we had no problem with noise. When we closed the windows, it truly blocked out any noise from below. The location was great, near most everything we were interested in: waterfront, museums and train stations.

The beds were comfortable and the hotel was very clean. The breakfast was served in a pleasant room on the fourth floor. The employees were very helpful and check in and out out were fast. The only thing missing was a larger lobby to sit in when it's rainy outside and guests are tired of being in their rooms.

Great service at this hotel. We stayed in the Rozenkrautz Suite on the 5th floor - so spacious and fantastic views. Breakfast buffet is good. Fabulous location for walking all around Oslo. Wifi is an issue - while we stayed there anyway. Would connect for a few seconds then disconnect, too much of a hassle trying to fix it as well. Aside from that, it is a great hotel! Beautiful on the inside - quaint and old world.

The staff were charming and helpful. Hotel was quaint and beautiful but a little tired. For the great price you get breakfast included which was actually delicious and a great selection. Fantastic location very close to main shopping streets and ice rink in winter. Would definitely stay here again if I was in Oslo.

"good location but not very modern"

24/03/2017

Excellent location but the hotel has seen its' best days; it seems that it's made more for the convenience of the personnel than guests (uncomfortable breakfast times, no amendeties in the bathroom, minibar from the '80s etc.)

it is the best choise for Oslo due to perfect position of the hotel in the center of everything. Clear room, very politely and helpfull sevice and complete entire breakfast (very importatnt due to quit expensive products in Oslo). the Price is very attaractive so i'm happy that found that place! i do suggest to everybody.

"Perfect location but damp smell in the room"

3
25/11/2016

Best Western Karl Johan is located on Oslo's most famous street in the very heart of the city within walking distance to most attractions in Oslo. There is a metro station, Stortinget, 200 meters from the hotel and the main railway station is less than 10 minutes by foot. This is an old historic hotel with a lovely facade and magnificent staircase. Staff was friendly and helpful. Free and fast Wi-Fi. Free coffee and tea in the lobby. Breakfast was good but nothing special. Negatives My room had a damp smell from something like old wet carpet. I had to open the window to get some fresh air, which also let in the sounds from the street. Bathroom was old and dull with a depressing yellow fluorescent lightning.

"Location is great - if you want to enjoy the city center"

3
09/11/2016

Best Western Karl Johan is a quite old hotel, with a great location in the middel of the city center. Had a nice room (considering the age) and also surprisingly quiet considering the location at Karl Johan. Breakfast can be improved with bigger selection, but quality was okay. Would recommend to check in at this hotel if you get a nice price, and would like to enjoy the city center of Oslo.

"Nice hotel for a budget night"

Location is perfect and the room was nice and clean. Breakfast was a positiv experience. The reseption area is what mainly pulls down my rating. It looks dirty and old, and gives you a wrong impression of the hotel.

29/10/2016

We took the train from the airport into national theatret station and the hotel is a short walk from there. No taxi required. Warm and welcoming greeting staff. Breakfast was fantastic! Lovely freshly made breads (still warm) and a good assortment of fresh fruits, as well as freshly made waffles, fresh sunny side up eggs and nice crispy bacon. We did not get the street side rooms, so were not affected by noise. I liked the extra provided - helping yourself to free coffee/tea whenever you want. As previously commented on - hotel is right in the centre of action, and has lots of cafes, restaurants and shops at its doorstep. Negative: The hotel is aged, and needs a little updating.

"Fantastic location, terrible sound-proofing!"

17/10/2016

The location was fantastic- great for exploring the City, galleries and museums. It is close to buses, trains and ferries. The breakfast was decent and convenient. The staff were helpful and friendly (though on check out the guy at the desk spoke only to husband regarding our booking- despite the fact that it was under my name LOL). The building is in good condition, clean, and the rooms are relatively spacious. Our rooms had a massive window overlooking the street, which was pretty cool. The wifi is also excellent. Unfortunately there is one reason why we will not stay there again- the noise from the pubs downstairs is terrible! We stayed Friday and Saturday nights (after 24hrs of travelling) and could not sleep. There were people partying and yelling out in the streets until about 4am (Norwegians party hard!). Traffic started up again around 3am (presumably people picking up their drunk friends), so there was a lot of honking and cars as well. It's a shame, because the hotel itself was pretty good. I would have given it 4 out of 5, had it not been for the noise.

"Good and Bad.... depends on where you room is located"

16/10/2016

First off, I can not say enough great things about this hotel. We took the metro into the city and you come up the ramp, make a left on the main street and walk a short distance to the hotel. You kind of can't believe it's location. It is right on the pedestrian only street that runs from the parliament down to the palace. Filled with shops, restaurants, and a park. It is probably the best location one could hope for. You can walk to everything and the view from my room was on the street side so you had a picturesque window looking out on the park. Yummy food and all the sights right there. The staff was great, friendly and helpful at checkin/out. Smiling and greeting when entering everyday...I was just blown away with this hotel overall. My one complaint was how loud it was at night. Being that we were right over the street we could hear people talking and the music was so loud we couldn't sleep until they stopped at 4am. The hotel rectified this situation for us, which I was thrilled about. It's a catch 22, I wanted that beautiful view but you have to be able to sleep. It was warm and with no ac you need the windows open. Even with the windows closed the music was too loud. Thank you BW for helping us out with this problem and to the guests wanting to stay here, please do...just don't stay on the side of the hotel facing the street. You will love the location and the staff!!!! I would stay here again.

The GOOD: decent breakfast, which is free. Free coffee and tea in the business lounge and first floor any time of the day. Comfortable rooms, free wifi, friendly staff, phenomenal location on Karl Johan street (which is literally down the street from the royal palace). The NOT so great: it's a hotel with a lot of "charm", which is to say that it's very old and frankly in need of some maintenance. The bathroom heated floor in our room didn't work and the carpeting is dirty. The wiring is run outside the wall, which really speaks to the age of the place. Overall, it's average. Good value and location, but iffy hotel quality as most best westerns are.

"A little too close to everything"

30/09/2016

For a younger demographic, this might be an OK hotel. For seniors like my wife and me, it wasn't a great choice. First, we got a room on the second floor and almost directly over the entrance. Karl Johans gate is very lively, next door to a couple of sidewalk cafes and with lots of motor traffic. On a warm September night, the windows had to be open and the noise was unpleasant. (It was also noisy the next morning.) Second, the bathroom had one of those quaint high-walled bathtubs. When you're young and limber, maybe that's OK; in your 70s, taking a shower shouldn't be a life-threatening experience. The breakfast room was small and crowded, offering a standard Scandinavian selection with the addition of sunny-side-up eggs cooked hard. The front-desk staff were fine, but perhaps the desk could have been staffed with more than one person. Sometimes several guests needed attention at one time. The staff did find us a quieter room for our second night--no view, and a steady hum from the ventilation system outside, but far more peaceful. If we were to revisit Oslo, we'd certainly look for a quieter, more modern hotel a bit farther from the city center. The city's public transit system is good, and got us where we wanted to go without much fuss. But younger, more affluent visitors might find the Best Western Karl Johan very acceptable.

"Sorry I picked this hotel"

As I sit here at 2:40 AM in the hotel, on my second night, I've resigned to the fact that I made a mistake. With two more nights to go in Oslo, I am looking to see if I can simply check out, eat the 2 more nights at this hotel and get some sleep and rest somewhere else. I'm a Diamond Member in Best Western and have stayed at numerous Best Westerns around the world. Here are my grievances regarding this hotel: - Small rooms with barely any storage for clothes, to hang or put in a drawer. - After flying 16 hours all I wanted to do was eat and sleep. I attempted to order room service at 7:00 PM and was told that the restaurant was too busy for room service and to come down. - The bathroom is small and outdated. No amenities, i.e. Lotion, shampoo, etc. The bathroom contains the all-in-one bath, gel, shampoo bottle in the shower. - The TV has just a handful of channels. And the worst of all is the music that plays at night. As mentioned earlier it's 2:47 AM at this time and am wide awake because of the loud music now playing for a second night in a row. I don't recommend this hotel to anyone coming to Oslo.

Good value for money. A bit noisy on lower floors. Staff is one of the bast I have encountered, very helpful for the business traveler. Good breakfast. Building just marvelous, rooms not much so. Avoid near by bars and restaurants, too touristic.

good enough hotel, great location, good breakfast buffet, comfortable beds, slight down side is noise from revellers on a Saturday night, so if this puts you off, choose a hotel a few streets back, it didn't bother me, the young chap at reception has a great easy going character and makes booking in and enquiries no problem for him at all

"BW Karl Johan Oslo in September - a little expensive"

3
12/09/2016

The Karl Johan BW is an OK hotel in a very good location in central Oslo. The rooms were OK but, to be honest, dated when compared to the competition. I was stunned to be presented with a stand up fan in the room rather than have air conditioning - particular when this hotel averaged 1600 NOK per night. However, the staff are professional, the hotel is clean and the breakfast is very good. The bottom line is that there are just better 'value for money' places to be had in the local area.

When I request upper floor with view I DON'T expect to be offered corner room with interior views or second floor room. Did not appear to be a/c at all and must be uncomfortably hot in evening. Location was excellent but other hotels within blocks.

Just a short walk from the main train station towards the city. Easy to find with the blue flags fluttering outside. Receptionist was very helpful and the hotel itself is very quaint and well kept. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and the wifi worked fine.

"Location, Location, Location"

07/09/2016

During our tour of Scandinavia, I would consider this both one of the best experiences and values of the trip. You couldn't possibly find a more ideal location - facing the central plaza which is bookended by the Parliament and the National Theater. Our gigantic double windows opened over this beautiful scene. Virtually all of the major museums and attractions are within walking distance. Our room was luxurious (especially the linens), the service excellent, and the extensive (included) breakfast was both delicious and a lifesaver in a city where a hamburger, beverage, and fries for two can easily cost $100. For an extra $10 you could pack a box lunch from the buffet! I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

"Super well situated"

4
06/09/2016

The Best Western Hotell is super well situated right on Karl Johan street. Although it is a bit scruffy with endless corridors (reminding me of Faulty Towers) the service is very good and so is the breakfast. There was a big water damage outside the bathroom door, there was no wifi, but I enjoyed my stay nevertheless.

A very nice and old stylish hotel in the middle of the main street in Oslo. The location is as central as one could get it. Rooms are nice and clean, and the price is not as bad location taken into consideration. A bit odd that breakfast is served as late as 0700, but no nig deal. Will definately come back.

"Great location Excellent staff"

25/08/2016

This hotel ticks all the right boxes , the hotel is in a great location right in the heart of Oslo, lots of restaurants, bars , sights with 5-10 minutes walking distance. Its very easy to reach from the Airport Direct train to Nationaltheatre and then just 5 minutes walk to the hotel. The rooms are very good for a 3 star hotel , very clean decent size bathroom, room and bed. The hotel has a business lounge on 3rd floor with free Tea/Coffee which is good to wind down its also free, the lounge is big enough and almost always empty. The best is staff Ms. Dora is a gem she took enough time to explain me all before coming to the hotel like transport options etc. Room types other options. Ms. Diane you should contact for any tips on what to do in Oslo her ideas are brilliant she is patient and very helpful. A big plus if traveling first time in Oslo. Both of them them are wonderful and make travel smooth. Will surely stay here again when traveling in Oslo again.

"The best location in Oslo"

20/08/2016

Five minutes from the palace of the King and close to the central rail station. It's better not to come with a car. There are restrictions on using cars in the near streets.Under the hotel there is a restaurant - EGON - with reasonable prices (taking in consideration that you are in Norway). The breakfast in the hotel was lovely. Moreover, the team of the hotel was very helpful. Good value per money.

"Fantastic location but avoid room 418"

4
20/08/2016

This hotel had good sized rooms and is situated right in the Main Street for the palace and restaurants. It was easy to catch the train to national theatrett, don't get off at central station. A short walk through the park and you are there. Make sure you have a look in the deli next door. Quick food and drinks that you can take away to your room or to the park. Lots of food places as well but don't believe the reviews that say Norway doesn't expect tips, these places asked straight out how much you were adding. The Karl Johan has tea and coffe on both the ground and third floor that you can access yourself. Now room 418 is a perfectly good room except it has the spotlights for the hotel each side of your window. And the blackout curtains don't quite stop the glare coming in.

"In the heart of OsLo"

19/08/2016

Good value for money, location wise, for sure. Breakfast is ok, rooms clean. When you want a top location an a top of the bill hotel, just choose the most expensive. This is good value for money. And yes when you are in the cetre of a Town, there will be more noise the on a farm. You will hear people party.

"Fantastic central location"

5
15/08/2016

This hotel is located about ten minutes walk from Oslo central station. Our room was on the 5th floor overlooking Karl Johan, it was spacious and comfortable with a massive flat screen TVs. Breakfast is included which I was pleased with, however the quality and choice was exceptional offering smoked salmon, cold meats, cheese, olives, various types Oslo eggs, massive choice of bread, fresh fruit, freshly cooked waffles etc Wow. What I liked about this hotel is the fantastic central position a stone throw fro Aker Brygge and all the main sights, the friendly service and is also reasonably priced. Had a great weekend.

"The hotel is in a great location on the park in downtown Oslo."

3
13/08/2016

Great location, easy to get to all of the downtown locations and tourist attractions. One disappointment is "guest laundry". When any hotel, and especially a Best Western, mentions guest laundry one would expect a "guest laundry". One does not expect the ability to send laundry out to get back in a few days. Please take this off your website or be prepared to offer what anyone would expect with a "guest laundry" service. The ability for the guests to do their laundry on site. Is it complicated? I think not. Get it off of your website or expect more guests to be disappointed by your services.

"Great Location, nice hotel!"

4
10/08/2016

I stayed for one night at the hotel, the location is perfect, right in the center of Oslo. I have felt the room was so hot when we went back at night though it was cold outside! There was a fan in the room but the trick is if you open the window and the door for a minute, done! :) rooms are spacious.. Breakfast was basic, nothing special except for the fresh waffles! Last but not least, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful especially Irene at the front desk, she was so cheerful and energetic..

"BW Karl Johan"

3
09/08/2016

Ok, so the first thing, if you're driving the KJH doesn't ha e a car park - there is one about 10 min walk away and will cost NOK320 for the night. Secondly, don't get a room facing the square - 1am & 3am the roads are cleaned by not the quietest of equipment. You also have a bunch of busy bars/restaurants below you. As you'd expect from a BW, the KJH is suitable for your basic needs and doesn't really support too many pleasantries. The rooms are small but functional, with shower, desk, TV, wardrobe and a bed. The bed is actually quite comfy, I just hate the way you get two duvets but you do get to use the other pillow if travelling alone. Being a single serving traveller, my budgets/expenses are limited so spending consecutive nights on the tiles are out of the question. This leaves me with the room and a TV. So as I said, the room is clean but not very spacious - I could live with it. What I struggled with is the TV was limited to a choice of channels from BW - disappointing but not the end of the world. I've seen some travellers rave about the breakfasts, this I can't understand why - it's ok if you like that sort of thing I guess. In terms of location, it's great. You walk out to the centre of Oslo with all public requirements immediately available. At the end of the day, it's clean and the bed is good. Which was good enough for me.

"Well situated"

4
06/08/2016

Pleasant hotel, centrally placed with easy access to train station, the Nation Theatre and station are 2-3 minutes walk and the main station 10-15 minutes walk, giving easy access to other places and airport. They do a very good breakfast, hot and cold food. The rooms a rather small but acceptable. There is free tea and coffee in the foyer. Pleasant helpful staff. The hotel is situated on an avenue come plaza with gardens and fountains in the middle. A short walk takes you down to the sea.

"Don't stay here in summer"

1
03/08/2016

There are no airconditioners and unless you have a room in the inner courtyard you will be forced to sleep with the windows closed to keep the noise from the streets out. We did have a freestanding fan in the room, but it just swirled the heat around. Breakfast was just as uncomfortable despite the fact that the staff had placed several freestanding fans around. Interestingly, the reception area is airconditioned! It was far cooler to go outside and sit under the trees than try to stay in the hotel. Come on Best Western - install airconditioners. We won't be back Suggest you stay at a hotel off the main road if it doesn't have aircon.

The location of the hotel is great, right in the middle of the tourist action. The hallways and common area are worn and could use repair. The room was clean but very plain. "Hot room at the top"

30/07/2016

The hotel is well located within easy reach of the central station and near the Parliament and Royal Palace. There are a lot of restaurants nearby and the waterfront is a short walk away. There is no air conditioning in the rooms; this is probably OK most of the time, but it was very hot in Oslo towards the end of July and the room was very hot. A fan is provided, but it doesn't cool the room. The rooms do not have coffee or tea facilities, but near reception there is coffee and tea. Ice is available from the same area that breakfast is served. Breakfast was good with a wide variety to choose from. It can get very busy later in the morning.

"Very good location, nice building"

4
24/07/2016

We booked two rooms for a stay of 3 nights. The property is a classic building very well located close to the train station where the train from the airport operates (then we found out that there is a closer station). The neighborhood is really nice, parks and very many restaurants are at your front door. A commercial area is meters away, same thing with the Royal Palace, the docks, etc. Transportation to main attractions is to be found very close to the hotel as well. Our double room was very spacious, mainly compared to the standard in Scandinavia, it was clean, and in very good working order. We even had a minibar, complimentary coffee, tea and the basics. "Almost a wardrobe" was available (scandinavian hotel room design got rid of classic wardrobes and drawers many years ago,,,,)The single one was also spacious and in the same very good conditions. We liked the building very much, it is very nicely decorated, framed portraits, classic furniture, soft carpets are all over the place. All in very good condition. The main staircase was my favourite feature. Reception staff always available and very friendly. Breakfast is good, but the facility can get a little crowded. All in all a very pleasant experience in a very nice city.

"Good location and excellent breakfast"

4
23/07/2016

This hotel is well located to walk to all the sights and to the train station. The street is pedestrian in summer so it was quiet from the traffic. The main noise came from the fact that our room was over the sports bar so every evening football was on it got noisy late at night. Breakfast was lovely and the hotel is a fine old building. The receptionist could have been more polite when we arrived but otherwise the staff were helpful.

"Central location"

This is a charming hotel in an excellent location. Situated very near the university and on a sidewalk lined with cafes, it's a nice place to spend one or two evenings. The room was a little dated and the front desk staff were rather cold. Breakfast was very good. I would stay here again. It's comfortable.

The location was terrific, and very easily accessible for transport to and from airport and getting to major sights. We had a Junior Suite, and it was very spacious and clean. The front desk staff was very helpful. Breakfast buffet was plentiful and tasty.

"Not bad but expect a little more for the price"

11/07/2016

Great location (downtown but only a mile from the waterfront and close to public transport), with traditional façade, but limited wifi, limited eating options, small rooms, no gym. It is what it is though, good to use for a base for sleeping and heading-out each day to explore or do business.

"Fantastic Location/Comfortable"

4
11/07/2016

Location is right on the pedestrian mall that runs from the train station to the palace. Lots of places to walk to for sightseeing and food (albeit, tourist food). Stayed in a single room - larger than most European single rooms (twin bed, desk, couch). Could not get the air conditioning to work, but opening the window was fine (noise might bother light sleepers). Room was clean. Shower was a walk-in, not a tub (which was great). As is usual in Europe, there no vanity to put your items in the bathroom. The breakfast buffet was extensive and varied. It did not change day to day, but there were so many different options, you can vary your meal over the course of days. Never see anything like this in the states for a like priced hotel. Front desk folks were very polite and helpful. I would definitely stay here again.

"Karl Johan Best Western Hotell"

4
10/07/2016

The location is absolutely terrific. Within walking distance of most of the main sites and attractions (the National Gallery, the Akershus Fortress, the Royal Palace, and the ferry docks, to name a few), and directly on the main pedestrian thoroughfare in the city. The hotel is basically average when compared to most European hotels, and you can see where the rooms have been renovated to include private bathrooms. VERY comfortable beds. There is no parking at the hotel. The closest parking is at the Grand Hotel across the street. EXPENSIVE!!! It cost me more to park each day (400 NOK) than I was paying for the rental of the car.

"Great value and location "

4
08/07/2016

A perfect location in the heart of town. The clean room with enough space for two was nicely decorated and all the public areas were well maintained. Complimentary tea and coffee was a nice touch. Fresh breakfast buffet was well presented and very good. Thanks for the vote if you found this helpful.

"Average hotel - nothin notable"

3
01/07/2016

Very average hotel. Gives a basic night's sleep, food and peace. Nice tea corner in the foyer, but very limited public space found to meet with colleagues, so we ended up working in the front window of the hotel reception. Watch out for parking - as they close the roads to keep the streets car free - so parking is a 10-15 minute walk away.

Dear Fin-guts Thank you for your feedback. Nice to hear you got what you needed. We have a large and nice living room on the 3rd floor with coffee where you can meet your colleagues next time. Wishing you a nice summer.

"Great hotel, centrally located"

30/06/2016

The hotel is in the best possible downtown location. There is a lot of sightseeing and shopping within easy walking distance. They have a breakfast buffet with all sorts of Norwegian food. It was fantastic! The central location comes with a price - noise. When we were there, there was a lot of activity below on the street. There is no air-conditioning, so if it's summer, you'll want the windows open. There are three solutions. 1. Get a room facing the inside of the building. 2. Use earplugs. 3. Close the windows and use the fan. We wanted a room facing the street, so I chose earplugs a couple of nights. I slept great. We chose option 3 (close the windows and use the fan). That worked well also.

Dear BuzWeston Greetings and many thanks for sharing your experience with us. I'm glad to hear that you had an enjoyable stay, this means a lot to us. The location is perfect and central, but like you mentioned, in summer the might be a little bit noise from streets if you have the windows open. Still it is close to everything, perfect for sightseeing. Thank you so much for highlighting the breakfast, we want all of out guests to be able to enjoy a wide selection of high quality Norwegian products. Wish you a nice summer and hope to see you again.

"Access and parking nightmare"

20/06/2016

Do not use this hotel if you are driving your own car Parking is a major walk from the hotel in a central parking area No facilities to drop luggage I have canceled my return visit to this hotel Beyond that the hotel itself is good and up to standard

Leiv R, Daglig leder at BEST WESTERN Karl Johan Hotell, responded to this review
Dear guest Nice to hear that you enjoyed our hotel. We always appreciate to hear what is good or bad so that we can constantly improve. About parking. The nearest parkering is located 350 m from the hotel. In summertime there are outdoor restaurants outside the hotel at Karl Johan street an is partially closed. There is of course the ability to drive up to the main entrance to drop luggage and check in. Wishing you a nice summer and welcome back.

"Great Location In Central Oslo"

16/06/2016

Great location in the main street of central Oslo. Busy area with shops and restaurants around. Central station about 7-10 mins walk. Very nice choice of savoury or sweet at the breakfast buffet. Very friendly staff. While checking, they've asked us if we wanted a quiet room and we accepted, especially because Friday nights are really noisy and busy. We were grateful because we enjoyed the quietness of the room. Although the view was facing the back buildings, it didn't matter since we were pleased with the bed, bathroom and general condition of the room. Unfortunately, there was no air co and it was a very hot day but we were able to leave the window open.

Leiv R, Daglig leder at BEST WESTERN Karl Johan Hotell, responded to this review
Dear Agnès L Thank you for your wonderful feedback regarding your stay at our hotel. Good to hear that my staff took good care of you and that you enjoyed our breakfast. The hotel's location in the middle of Oslo, it is as you say a good base to explore the city. I wish you a nice summer and welcome back.

"In the middle of everything in Oslo"

The hotel sits between 2 stations - the central and the national theater-making it truly accessible. It was also located where almost everything -dining, shopping, site seeing and jsut chilling our - was happening. For both leisure and business the hotel is in a great location. Let me also note that breakfast was generous not only in portions but as well as in daily selections. Finally, internet access was relatively easy to make and was quite fast. Truly enjoyed my stay at this property

"Great hotel in city center - transportation option"

03/06/2016

We stayed at this hotel in May 2016 for two days. The hotel is in a central location and pretty grand. Everything is satisfactory. We arrived in the midst of a hotel strike. The hotel coped with it when we were there but apparently had to close soon after we left. The hotel is actually located significantly nearer to the National Theater train station than to the Oslo central train station. So if you are coming to (or leaving from) this hotel from the airport, you should buy your ticket to the theater station and thereby save you the hassle to drag your luggage from the Oslo S station.

"Good location, peaceful nights, friendly service and English Breakfast tea!"

The BW Karl Johan Hotel is situated in the centre of Oslo within easy walking distances of cafes, restaurants and public buildings which normally attract tourists. If you wish to travel around a little, the Hop-on Hop-off bus has a stop close to the hotel. The Hotel offers a good breakfast, spacious rooms and service. We asked for a quiet position and ended up on the fourth floor facing inwards towards an inner quadrangle. The room was perfectly clean and well maintained but somewhat sparse with high ceilings. Our room (411) provided an excellent base for our three night stay and we were rarely bothered by any noise – none at all from the street – with windows open we could hear air conditioning from the ground floor. It is provided with a good sized working desk, refrigerator and a sitting area with settee and two arm chairs. The room does have a step across the middle separating the seating from the sleeping area and a further step into the shower room; this may be an issue for some. The shower room has no shelving and only soap/shampoo is provided by units on the wall. The shower itself is first rate, though there is not a grab rail for those of us with suspect balance. The breakfast offers hot and cold options and although essentially small, covers a fair choice. We enjoyed all of the ones we tried. Service in this area is a little sporadic and the provisions are not always topped-up immediately. Having no Norwegian, the milk varieties confused me more than once! There is free wifi in the rooms, a luggage room and a business centre where one can make a cup of tea (choice of Twinings teas) or coffee at any time. As English Breakfast drinkers, we found this priceless. Service was friendly, helpful and efficient. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the BW Karl Johan Hotel and strongly recommend it.

Well located hotel in central square near metro station and coast. Rooms basic and in particular bathrooms cramped and faded. Free, fast wifi. Friendly, efficient service. Reasonable breakfast buffet with good selection of sandwiches.

18/05/2016

Christian and the young lady who was his associate at the front desk were outstanding and performed well under adverse conditions. At the end of our 3rd day in Oslo we returned to the hotel to discover that we had to leave because management was closing the hotel as a result of the labor strike currently affecting many Norwegian hotels. Christian and his associate found another hotel for us about a block away. We paid for the four nights we had contracted for and we were provided a significantly superior room at the replacement hotel. All in all, what could have been a significant customer relations problem turned into a positive memorable event.

"Suprisingly good."

14/05/2016

Stayed here for three days. It is situated in the Main street in Oslo, close to the royal castle and the norwegian parliament. I was thinking it would be a noisy stay, but we were not bothered at all. Could of course be because we stayed there during normal week days in the low season, but it was a positive experience for me. Buffet breakfast in the morning was very good, other meals we had to get elsewhere. Coffemachine in the lobby where you could grab and go out into the city. Will definetely stay here again.

"Basic, Clean, Old Feel..Super Location"

14/05/2016

Stayed in standard double. I found rooms small though clean, linens clean and hygienic. Rooms dont have ventilation thus at times suffocating. Excellent location but rooms on road can be noisy coz of bars below so you may have to keep windows closed during summer season. Hotel is does not have modern feel but still decorated in old ways. Rooms lack decor. Over all just fine.

"Great location, friendly & efficient staff, comfortable room"

4
13/05/2016

This hotel is centrally located and we found our room very comfortable. The staff were excellent, especially as we didn't find them at their best. The current strike of hospitality staff in Norway meant that we had to move hotels after one night of a three night stay, as the hotel was unable to stay open. The staff were unflappable, reassuring and made arrangements for us to stay in suitable accommodation elsewhere. They say, if you want the real measure of your people put them under pressure. The front desk staff here coped well in what could have turned into a crisis. Two minor issues: The wifi was inconsistent & the fabric of the hotel is starting to show its age a bit.

"Central location"

3
12/05/2016

The hotel is old and a bit tired looking with really small rooms, especially the single rooms which are tiny. However the location is very central and difficult to get better which is probably the reason for the high room charge, the rooms certainly do not warrant the price. Rooms at the front can be a little noisy late into the night although this is mitigated by good double or more glazing on the windows, not much help though is you like fresh air.

"Small room"

2
07/05/2016

Our room was incredibly small with a view on the equipment of the hotel and included the noise of the same equipment. There was just enough room for the bathroom door to close. All this at a rate of more then € 200,00 per day.

"Central Location in the middle of Karl Johan"

26/04/2016

We spent three nights here and would happily stay again. We were allocated a room on the 4th floor with a view of the park, castle and the Town Hall. It is truly very central. As we were on the upper level, the noise from the revellers outside was not a problem. The beds were very comfortable. We had a settee, table and a comfortable chair. Plenty of luggage space. The hotel strike broke out on our 2nd day, but this hotel did not close and management appeared to cover all tasks needed to keep the hotel running. The breakfast was very good and our compliments to the one person dealing with the food and clearing up. All the staff were very sweet and helpful except the grumpy night-porter on duty when we arrived close to two in the morning. There is free Wifi but it is far from adequate.

"Perfect location for business or pleasure"

24/04/2016

I travelled to Oslo at least once a month for business and always stayed in this hotel. Perfect central location close to offices, restaurants, bars and the lively Aker Brygge port area. There are some small, cheap rooms at the back of the hotel, but for a little extra you can get a deluxe room with a window on the street which is well worth it. The receptionist were always very helpful and friendly and welcomed me every time I can back and the breakfast was simple but always hot and fresh. Made the trips away so much better.

"Basic but pleasant"

20/04/2016

I stay for a few days at this hotel while attending a conference. The room, a single, was not large but was quite adequate and clean. I had a room away form the street for quite, and I never heard any street noise. The location is excellent, in the midst of the city center. Short walk to the theater train stop, and easy walk to the main station. The breakfasts were good, with some warm items as well as cold. On weekends the breakfast room did not open until 8:00, though, so getting a very early start for the weekend was not possible if you wanted breakfast first. But, I think that is a practice at other hotels in Oslo, as well. The staff I met were all pleasant. Overall, I had a good stay and would be happy to stay there again.

08/04/2016

The location was perfect, the hotel was good, the ceilings were high, and very big windows, you can seat and watch outside with joy. the inside design was romantic. Only bad thing :The beds were incredibly terrible!! For one night we dared it but for long stay it will be not okey.

15/03/2016

We booked here at the summer equinox by chance - longest day of the year and also freakishly warm for Oslo. We had a beautiful view of the park, but when it got hot (which they said is very rare and I believe them) there is no air conditioning, they ran out of fans the first night and we had to sleep with (large!) windows open. Challenge: there is a very "hot" cafe outside and amplified guitar music and everyone loudly enjoying the evening and it was brutal to get our jet-lagged self to sleep. Staff did all they could; second night was better. Very clean rooms if a bit run down. Breakfast was excellent. Easy 20 minute walk from train station and close walk to everything else.

Dear ForUs3 Thank you for taking the time to give us a review on Tripadvisor. I am happy to read that you had a nice stay at our hotel. As you mention, there are cafe in first floor, and of five hot summer days in Oslo my this be a issue in couples of our room. In summer time we now have fan for all rooms. Welcome back next time you visit Oslo. Rest regards Leiv R

"Great locations, rooms need an update"

12/03/2016

We spent three nights in Best Western Karl Johan Hotel in February 2016. Location is great on the main street. Easy to walk and just minutes away from subway. Breakfast was good with salmon and waffles as the best part. We had a room facing Karl Johan and we had no nice issues.. On this particular week room prices were really reasonable for Norwegian hotel. Hotel is in old building and gives it certain charm but somehow it looked a little bit fake. Rooms need an update. Not sure how knowledgable staff was - I heard a quest asking why there were read little cabins outside and some other 'building' work. All this was for Biathlon World Championships - happening and the receptionist did not know...

08/03/2016

Pros Great location smack in the middle of Oslo with close access to National Theater Station. Comfort This hotel is due for renovation and the room I had that "great" old hotel dust smell with worn wall to wall carpet. Trams run outside the hotel from 0600 to 0100 hours every 2-5 minutes and even with the windows close you are hard pressed getting any sleep. I forgot my earplugs, so 4 hours sleep.. Did i mention the garbage and city service vehicles? No temp regulation possibilities, so you have to open the windows to regulate.. The double-bed was two singles pushed loosely together, so "mind the gap" or you will end up on the floor. Room also had some stairs that might not agree with everyone. No iron in the room either. Breakfast Not sure what I paid for. After 4hours sleep I just wanted to get out of there...

29/02/2016

I chose this hotel for a three-day leisure stay and was very happy with that choice. I had a AAA discount which made the cost of the hotel very favourable over lower-cost/less-service options. Both the hotel itself and its location were perfect for my purpose, which was to only use the hotel for sleeping and spend the rest of the day visiting the area. The hotel is very close to the Nationaltheatre train/subway station. It is also centralized within an area that contains restaurents appearing in the Oslo Pass bookllet, which offers all kinds of rebates. I used a single-bed room, which is a bit small, but still quite adequate and comfortable if you are not planning on spending much time in the room. I was also very satisfied with the services offered and staff. There were two nit-picky detractors, but nothing that would prevent me from recommending this hotel.

"Old hotel, great location"

01/02/2016

The Best Western Karl Johan is one of the older hotels in Oslo and needs refurbishment. The best things that the hotel has going for it is the breakfast and the location. I stayed in a single room on the 5th floor, the elevators was being repaired so there was quite a bit of walking involved, but that was fine. The single room has a small tv, small bed, couch and a bathroom, basically everything you need when you're on a quick business trip. Prices was fair since this was in December and one of the slower months.

"Literally the Worst Hotel Experience I've Ever Had"

1
29/01/2016

I don't write bad reviews. Ever. I generally find them petty and shrill. I'm writing this so that you don't have the nightmare I had. It was the eve of my birthday. I'd already had a bad airbnb experience my first two nights in Oslo with a bad bed, so I went to check into a hotel. After all, what are you really paying for at the most basic level: a bed. Whether you're playing in it or sleeping in it, you want it to be comfortable. At the front desk, I ask if the beds are comfortable. "Oh yes sir, very comfortable!" gushed Diana. She already heard about the bad experience I was having and how it was my birthday so she said she was giving me a room with a really nice view. I get to the room. It is very small. I look out the window: it is an airshaft, as out of a noir movie to depict the epitome of shabbiness. I go back to the desk. There must be some mistake....? "Oh no, sir, that is one of our better rooms. You don't want a single." [In case you don't know, the people of Norway have low self esteem with regard to the size of their beds. A 'single' is less than three feet wide - basically cot sized (an American twin is 39"-40" wide). And what the call a queen is smaller than an American full/double. Oh, and if you are two people sleeping together, they still insist that you have two separate blankets. As in, they make the bed with a blanket on the left and a blanket on the right. "Why not just share one blanket between two people?" you ask. Because the blankets are the size of hand towels. Again, low bedding self-esteem issues. None of which speaks to the hotel, except insofar as they choose to impose these provincial customs on their guests.] So I go back to the airshaft room. Well, I think, I'm just sleeping, that's fine. I lie down...and discover the torture machine in the room. The bed consists of a piece of foam, not four centimeters thick - less than two inches - and I don't mean nice memory foam, no - if you were packing to move, you would be concerned about packing your dishes in this foam. And the foam is laid over something tantamount to a spiders nest of coils. I don't mean a mattress. And I don't even mean a box spring either, because at least that would just be stiff. No, this is a cauldron of springs that manage both to be soft in the worst ways and hard in the worst ways. No matter what your preference is in a mattress, there is something for everyone here to suffer. So I go back and tell Diana I really can't sleep on this bed. She won't give me a better bed. Okay, I can't stay here. She refuses to refund my money. I try calling other hotels. They are ALL booked. I calmly explain to her that this bed will genuinely hurt my back. She genuinely doesn't care. I ask her if I can take a foam pad from a bed in another empty room to put on my bed as extra padding. No. Can I have extra pillows? No. Can I just have extra blankets? No, no, no. Why not? Because they are locked up. She offers sheets as padding. Literally just sheets - four or even five if I want them. This is a perfect metaphor for her meager thin sense of hospitality. Can I speak to a manager? No. Who is the manager tomorrow (a Saturday)? There is no manager on the weekends. No manager? No. He is just in Mondays through Fridays, and you can e-mail him. I'm in the room now. Drunken kids are running up and down the hallway, knocking on the walls. This hotel is a marvelous approximation of Hell. Avoid it at all costs, even if it means buying a plane ticket out of Oslo: your middle coach seat will be more comfortable than the beds at this hotel.

"Isn't the continental but it's central and affordable "

26/01/2016

I styled for business at the hotel. Primarily chosen because of it's central location. Rooms are clean but close to outdated. TV isn't offering much but the wifi is stable well functioning and good enough for streaming which saved the stay. Breakfast is good and of a continental style but without bacon which is to criticise. Egg but no bacon come on you can do better. All in all a nice hotel with some acceptable flaws.

Stayed her with friends while visiting Oslo. We stayed in standard rooms, single and double, and the rooms were spacious and the interior flawless. Breakfast is plentiful and has a wide variety of options. The reception staff, maids and breakfast staff were all very welcoming and friendly. The hotel is placed in the very center of town which is perfect. I greatly enjoyed my stay and I would recommend this hotel.

"Great location!"

31/12/2015

We stayed at the Best Western Karl Johan on Dec. 27-30. As everyone says, the location is excellent. It is right on Karl Johans Gate convenient to great shopping, the palace, the opera house, etc. Upon check-in, the front desk person informed us that having a car in Oslo is not ideal. We quickly discovered how right she was. She told us how to get to two different parking garages and we managed to find one of them about 5-6 blocks away (although had difficulty finding it again to get our car!) It was 320 NOK which is approximately $36 USD per night to park. We decided to return our car early. Everything we intended to do was within walking distance and there is a train station 1 1/2 blocks away in the park by the National Theater. There are also trams and buses everywhere. We had two rooms and one room was made up for three people. It had two twin size beds and a pull-out that my teenager said was surprisingly comfortable. The rooms are a little worn-out but were spacious by European standards and kept very clean. The bathroom was good sized but weirdly had soap dispensers for the sink and shower. The shower had a combined body wash/shampoo dispenser which did not go well with my teenage girls. I highly recommend packing your own shampoo and conditioner, which I luckily had done. The same front desk person (I'm very sorry I did not find out her name) was also extremely helpful in finding very good restaurants for us the night we arrived and the night before we left. Being in Norway during the days between Christmas and New Year's is not ideal and many places are closed. She was very patient in finding somewhere that was open and still good! They have a very, very good breakfast with a huge selection of foods. It was quite delicious! I recommend the Norwegian waffles, they cook much faster than Belgian and are tastier, and the brown cheese with Wasa crackers or toast. Lovely spacious lobby and also as other have said, free coffee and tea provided with take-away cups!

Great location close to shops, restaurants and points of interest. Room was clean and comfortable but you had to wait a while for hot water. Breakfast buffet was very good, lots to choose from to suit all tastes. Lovely old building, decor old fashioned but suits the hotel, nice and cosy.

"Clean up the wooden floor,"

3
22/12/2015

The service standard is average. Buffet breakfast in Europe standard is above average. But the most demaging thing is they seldlom perform deep cleaning of their wooden floor, rendering dust and dirt piled up on the wood surface. I stayed in room 316. For two nights days ago.

"Good location, price, breakfast but rude staff"

11/12/2015

We stayed at the hotel for 1 night. 15 min walk from the train station. Close to all the attractions..whatever they are in Oslo. We were treated poorly by the Receptionist that checked us in - rude, untrained and impatient Russian lady. The room was very tiny (you can get more space and much better service at Bondenheim hotel around the block). If you plan to take a shower -give yourself at least half an hour to get hot water running. The breakfast was good. If you need to speak to the manager - s/he doesnt exist - no kidding. For the same money and location - I recommend Bondenheim over best Western.

The front desk staff made us feel at home and treated us like family! Hotel was clean, food was great, beds were comfortable. Best thing about this hotel was the location. Right in the middle of everything! You could walk to restaurants, shops, and the many incredible sights!! Also walking distance to the bus/train/ferry locations. Could not have been more pleased!

28/11/2015

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. out room was always cleaned and warm. A good pressured shower, wifi worked well. What we liked most was a great choice of breakfast. This hotel is located walking distance from the train station around 10min. Very convenience for sightseeing, shopping in the city. You can also take the metro brings you to 1 minute away from the hotel. There is a square in front of the hotel which I could see getting ready for a Christmas market. would have been perfect stay for Christmas time.

Having been to Oslo for a weekend city break and finding it hard to get a cheap hotel, this hotel is a great price in a great city! Right in the main Karl Johan gate part of the city, lots within walking distance. Very helpful staff, clean rooms, good breakfast & free coffee to take out and about with you! ( a blessing given an average cup is 4-6gbp!!) Would defiantly return! :)

"Great Location"

The hotel looks really impressive from the outside and it's a great location right on the main street. Reception area nice as well and all the staff I met were very friendly. I had emailed and asked for a room overlooking the street but was disappointed not to get one. The room had no view and was very small down a really long winding corridor however it was spotlessly clean and had everything in it that I needed. The breakfast was good with a big selection and hot food every day. Free tea and coffee in reception and in the meeting room. I would stay here again but only if the price was right

This Hotel was exceptionally good Value in a very expensive City. The room and rest of hotel very clean. Staff super friendly, and good continental breakfast. Central for trains and buses, 40 miles from airport, transfer time 1 hour. We travelled with ryanair, and flight landed at 23.05 according to reviews we had read we wouldn't be able to get transport to city. As we arrived at airport, there was an express service bus outside. It cost £15.00 pp to Oslo city. It took approx 15 mins to walk to hotel where we received a very warm welcome. There is free tea and coffee in reception, which we took advantage of whenever we went back to our room, you can get a kettle from reception for use in your room at no extra charge. Our room view was of the Air con system, but we weren't in our room too often so that didn't matter. Plenty of hot water great shower. comfortable bed, but beware of steps down into room, put light on as soon as you enter!! Plenty of Resturants and bars, very vibrant city. We spent 4 days here, and it was a very enjoyable trip.

"Small rooms, ridiculous closet and no hot water"

Lets start with something positive! The location of the hotel is very central and very convenient. My problem start when there was no hot water in the room. Ok it happens... the reception told me to change room. Ok so far! There was no second person at the reception so the receptionist ask me to go down to take the new key. Ok I put my pyjams and went ( I thought just one second to grab the key. My first surprise was that she told me to wait to finish the check in.. I said on but I was waiting for the second check in and after there was no client at the reception she prepare the key... telling me if the room is empty!!! How come the room to be empty??? I need both keys to change room... she had already cancelled the first key.... Meanwhile, she told me that they check the room there is hot water... who checked the room? The same person could bring the key in my room... and suddenly a groom came asked me if I need help... yes I need to finish with that. The closet in the first room was tiny, in the second please see the pictures!!! Also, the single bed is small and at the wall !!! To finish with a positive point, there is free wifi, that worked very well.

"Unbeatable location, friendly receptionists & cheap !!"

We booked this hotel not quite sure how central the location was - we knew it was going to be in the "old town" - but not until we got there did we understand how centrally located it really is. Directly across the road from the national Parliament. In my country, such a location would be very expensive. Pubs and restaurants directly next door. Book in was fast and handled professionally. Lifts worked well. The room contained everything we asked for - slightly small - but I believe by Scandinavian standards would be considered average. There is a step down inside the door and after the bathroom which you would need to watch for - certainly if coming in late from the pub. Bathroom was satisfactory - water temp in the shower tricky to adjust but plenty of hot water. Double-bed means two single beds pulled together [at least in Norway]. We would have preferred a double bed that is physically one bed - but not a major issue. View from Room 213 is interesting and not too noisy. 3rd floor on this side of the hotel [Rosencrantz Gate] might be the optimum room location. Breakfast was great. Very impressed with the always-hot soft-boiled eggs. This is not easy to do - but it was perfect every morning. Disposable eggcups very clever. Scrambled eggs also perfect. Fish choices great - as one might expect from a fishing town. Coffee fantastic. Most people fumbled with the button for the Juice dispenser - but after Day One it's not an issue. Overall a very pleasant experience and if we were coming back to Oslo, would stay nowhere else.

Looking for a hotel accessible to the central railway station, for incoming from the airport and outgoing to the railway trip to Bergen, we found this hotel very centrally located in Oslo. We walked from central station, which is quite a walk when you are dragging luggage, but if you get the Airport express to the National Theatre station (which is every 2nd airport express) it is a bit closer. The hotel dates from late 19th century, and it must have been a classic in its day. Now it is dated, but the rooms are comfortable and the facilities fine. The reception staff were very accommodating, friendly and efficient. If you want to make coffee or tea in your room, you have to request a kettle and the stuff to go with it. We prefer fresh milk with our coffee, so we bought some at a convenience store next to the hotel. The hotel is close to all major public transport (trains, trams, buses and ferries). Tickets are available from most 7/11 stores and machines in many places. A ticket last you for an hour in 1 zone, which we found handy to jump on a tram and do a mini tour around. Breakfast was included in our room tariff, a lovely buffet breakfast, hot and cold, including the regular food plus a few Norwegian specials such as smoked salmon and various herring dishes. We really enjoyed our stay.

Although this hotel is a bit dated, it ticks all the boxes. Rooms are spacious and if you are lucky to get one overlooking the main street,Karl Johans Gate, you are in for a treat. I did not see any air-conditioning, so I reckon these rooms facing south and west will feel the strong Summer Sun. Bathrooms are a bit on the small size, and they have also here adopted the combined soap and shampoo dispenser. Rooms are OK, nice stocked mini bar and comfortable beds. Wardrobe was sufficient for one person, 2 would be pressed for space. Free tea and coffee 24/7 in the reception area.Free WiFi all over the property.

Great spot in the Karl Johan area surrounded by restaurants and shopping, located right near the palace & gardens and and an easy walk to the train station and to the Aker Bryg eating/dining area. This is a nice hotel, our room was quite small but clean and very comfortable and quiet, staff are nice and check in and out was easy. Great central hotel, would stay here again

The location is great close to restaurants shopping malls and many land marks, staff are very helpful and friendly, my room was small and the view was roof tops with engines , sort of gloomy. But the bathroom was of a good size. Free wifi, ironing kit but no kettle . Furniture was worn out and needed replacement . Breakfast was fair , comfortable bed , I think it was overpriced for what it is.. One more thing... Long twisting corridors to reach the room. I want to thank the helpful and cheerful receptionists they were great

"Low-cost hotel in the center of Oslo"

Is more like if you don´t have money to stay at Grand hotel you can stay at this one and still be in the center of the center of Oslo. Is a old and sweet hotel with ok rooms. Bathtub and nice soft beds. The hotel is on the main street Karl Johan and when you step out from the entrance to the right you can see the castle. I would say is a grate hotel and the price is pretty right.

I stayed at the BEST WESTERN Karl Johan Hotel in the beginning of September on business. I very nice woman welcomed me at check in and was very talkative and nice. Always refreshing to get a good and personal welcome on arrival. However the lobby was not big so it was not indented for socialising. But no worries all of that was just around the corner as the location of this hotel is in the heart of the city with lots of bars and coffee houses. The room was clean and very nice. I thought the air-conditioning was not doing its best so I had to have the windows open to let fresh air in. Also there where small flies in the bathroom bothering me. The television and WIFI was great and the breakfast was fabulous, a large buffet with great variety. Good hotel but maybe I was a little unlucky with the room.

"Fascinating Suite & Very Friendly Staff"

Location is often all-important for a hotel. In Oslo, you could hadly find a better location than the Best Western Hotel Karl Johan ! Situated iathe prime part of the main street - Karl Johans gate. Next to the Grand Hotel and the Stortinget (Parliament Buildings). Visitors are greeted with a "red carpet" from the main street. A promising welcome for the visitors ! My wife Maria and myself took advantage of a special offer from the regional newspaper Sandefjords Blad. To encourage people from the "pvovince" to visit the capital city, the newspaper would offer their subscribers 400 NOK off the daily rate of 1395 NOK a double room during the weekends (Friday to Monday).. Maria and I booked a double room for the night : Friday 25 September 2015 - Saturday 26 September 2015. We got the special price and asked for upgrade options as well. This hotel has three suites available . The Karl Johan suite, The Eidsvoll suite, and the The Storthings suite. We decided to book the Storthings suite (room 414) situated on the 3rd floor (4. etasje in Norwegian). Probably the most impressive room altogether in this hotel. Very impressive view of the most prominent part of the centre of Oslo. And not the least : The best view of the city of the Stortinget (the Parliament Buildings). When touring hotels all over the world for decades, it is a typical experience that a suite in a more "modest" hotel is far more interesting, and even far cheaper, than an average room in a grand hotel. The room charge with the neighbours in the Grand Hotel of Oslo would typically be much higher than in this Best Western Hotel Karl Johan. My wife and I paid a suite surcharge of 600 NOK in addition to the special price of 995 NOK a night. This is a very good offer for a suite in the centre of Oslo ! The Reception Desk is situated on the ground floor and easily accessible without stairs. There is a lift to all floors of the hotel. My arrival at the hotel was at about 2 PM (1400 hrs). The Stortings suite was not yet available due to late check-out. The most loyal customers would usually get an upgrade to this or other suites of the hotel. Moreover, it is possible to extend the usual check-out time at noon when paying an additional 100 NOK per hour. It was pleasant to sit down in the lobby area and wait for the room. Some 15-20 minutes or so. Very friendly Staff with excellent command of English and very knowledgeable about the Oslo area. Efficient check-in and check-out procedures. There are coffee/tea facilities available free of charge to the guests in the lobby area. A first meeting with a hotel suite should always be a special experience. I myself enjoyed the Stortings suite from the first minute. First and foremost, the excellent view of the city centre and the bustling life outside. Windows easy to open. As a matter of fact, when standing in the corner window, you really have the feeling of being in the very centre of Oslo. Even greetings from street singers in the sidewalk of Karl Johans gate. The Stortings suite (room 414) is very spacious. There is even a huge table available for dinner parties or any other kind of celebrations. The furniture in this suite like in most Norwegian hotels would appear lto be "second hand furniture" or even worse than that. So if you do want luxury furniture at every occasion, this might not be the right place for you. However, the "spirit of the room" is good and welcoming. The double bed, however, is far from impressive and should be "updated" to one of those solid and by this time normal Scandinavian brands. There is no restaurant in the Best Western Hotel Karl Johan. However, there is an impressive room service menue from the nearby restaurant "Ett Glass" (One Glass). Lots of hot food, burgers, desserts, drinks, etc. A room service fee of 15 NOK. Very symbolic charge in hotels these days ! There is also a mini bar available in the Stortings suite and some snacks on the desk for a fee. A huge TV available with the Scandinavian channels + CNN, BBC. No German channels however. A small bathroom with the usual cosmetics free of charge. However, a bath tube not easily available for elderly people. No walk-in shower in this suite ! Improvements necessary ! The Breakfast next morning was an OK experience. The Breakfast room was situated on the same floor as the Stortings suite. Several stairs, however, would make the room inaccessible for wheelchair gurests. As newcomers to the 60+ generation, my wife and I would also consider how elderly people cope with the stairs. When mentioning this problem to the Reception staff and others, we were told that they would usuallly find a special room for wheelchair guest snd bring the food and beverages to them in that room. The normal Breakfast Room is narrow and has no windows to outside. The selection of food and beverages is OK and the staff is doing a good job. Most Breakfast guests seemed to be in the age group 20-30 years of age. So, all in all, a pleasant hotel with a top location and, not the least, an impressive staff. The Stortings suite is recommended to all who would like a special experience of Oslo !

If the management of this hotel could bottle and market the warmth and enthusiasm of their front desk person, Vita, they could make a million! She is so friendly and did everything to make us feel so welcome. Loved her....she should be the person training personnel. Wonderful! Going back this weekend!
