Best Western Plus
Negatives you can not afford pretending to be a Best Western hotel: - room not available before 15:00 hours - small 2-persons bed with a soft matras (in a large room?) - winter bedblanket/cover, to be used during summer temperatures above 25 degrees. - no wardrobe available - large (and clean) bathroom with a toilet size handbasin for two persons (see pictures on website !) - large windows (plus) with early wake-up curtains that only partially black out sunlight - no wifi in the hotelroom - no relevant tourist information available at frontdesk Positives: - Friendly helpfull personal - Clean - Great large rough towels - Everything on the room available to make your own coffee/tea Last but not least: roomprices vary (at least) from 59 to 110 euro. Such a price differences are unjustifiable for any hotel and certainly not for any Best Western.
We are staying at The Oaklands for a month due to home renovations. What can I say all the staff here at the Oakland's have gone above and beyond to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The staff are always so.friendly and accommodating, nothing is too much trouble . The chefs are happy to make something that's not on the menu??, which you wouldn't get in most other hotels/restaurants. It wouldn't be fair to name individuals as they are all a great team and all work well together to make it happen. I would highly recommend The Oakland's.
Myself and my new wife decided to get married at the oaklands last weekend. These words will not do justice to the outstanding service and care afforded to us by all of the staff at the oaklands. From main bar staff to the girls and guys who waited the tables at our wedding breakfast. We couldnt of hoped for a more welcoming and attentive service. Holly who acted as our toast master was brilliant. Always there when needed but not overbearing. Friendly and patient at all times. Vivian who I believe is front of house again was amazing. We met her on our food tasting and she was there on the day. She was happy and smiling when ever I saw her and from speaking to family and friends all were impressed with her. The team of girls and guy who did the wine and the bar in the function room were attentive and happy to stop and speak and smile while still extremely efficient. The food was exceptional throughout and another huge thank would go to the chefs and kitchen staff behind the scenes. As there were nothing but positive comments from all of our guests. From myself and my wife we would like to say a huge thank you to the Oakland's and the staff there and couldn't recommend you high enough. You really helped our day to be as special as it was. Many thanks Andy and Sandra.
Well we're do I start we booked in for one nights stay in what they described as a annex room, please don't be fooled by this it's basically a house/ bedsits totally unfit for the purpose of a hotel absolutely awful. Anyway after I complained about the disrepair and general state of the place they very kindly moved us too a lovely place called the ran worth this was very nice and completely different place and made our stay very nice indeed so thanks again ????????????
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for your lovely feedback. We do have the annex which is what it is however I'm glad we could upgrade you and that you took the time to give us a positive review. Next time you book make sure it's in the main hotel. Thanks again Marcus
I will not provide dates as I wouldn't want the bride and groom to realise how upset their guests were. Not just for us but also the bride and groom. There appeared little or no attention paid to them. After all it's supposed to be their special day, so why was the bride having to request water on tables etc. The planning and finer details was lax at best. The food was late, sparse and in some cases raw and inedible. Once the top table were eating it was another hour before all of the guests were also eating. The food ran out. Why? There was no one in charge to oversee the young staff members. I don't blame the staff, they had no guidance or direction, no enthusiasm or passion and to them it was probably just another wedding. To the owners/landlords...it's a tough trade and if you want to still be batting against the opposition you need to up your game. If weddings are your bread and butter you need to be there, observe and make changes.
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for your honest review. We are one of the busiest wedding venues in Norfolk. However every wedding is special and my staff should ensure the team are directed and if we failed on this occasion I can only apologise. Perhaps if you contact me direct with the specifics I can look into into exact details. Marcus
We stayed here for one night following a family event nearby. We had two children under 2 with us and the hotel obligingly provided a travel cot in the room at our request. However, they gave us a second floor room and there are no lifts. The heat hit us as we got to the beginning of the second set of stairs. The second floor smelt like dirty cooking oil and the rooms were unbearably hot with no air conditioning and all the windows closed. Even once we opened the windows the heat was too much. We asked for a fan which the hotel happily provided and set up while we were out but this made minimal impact. The breakfast was edible but it was evident that some of it had been sitting a while and some of it was over cooked, the toasting machine didn't work and the “kitchen assistant” offering to toast some bread I initially mistook to be the maintenance man as his clothing was filthy. The car park is free which is good but it was absolutely packed with 2 weddings being held at the hotel as well as guests.
nice hotel with a big free car park good staff service good size rooms great shower nice bed good buffet breakfast only a 5 min drive in to the centre good for business and leisure customers set back from main road so not noisy
I stay at Oakland's hotel for a couple of nights while visiting Norfolk and I must say what an excellent stay I had. The food was great and the receptionist Lynda couldn't have been more attentive , she made feel welcome throughout my stay and made sure everything was too my satisfaction. I Definitely recommend you to friends.
Me and my wife recently got married here. The entire day was amazing, the staff were exceptional, especially Martin (the wedding host) he was outstanding, ensuring that all our needs were met. The food was great and the room was great... I can't say a bad word about this place. I would definitely recommend to all ????????
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
It's so nice to hear such great feedback I will pass on your thanks and let Martin know. Sadly I didn't get a chance to thank you for booking your wedding with us it's a pleasure to work with guests like yourselves. Let me know when you are back and let me buy the drinks. Kind regards Marcus (owner)
I phoned the morning of our stay to ask if we could get in our room early as we were attending a wedding being held there at the hotel as we were traveling on a very hot day and wanted to change there .we were to,d we would have to pay an extra £20 .then when we got there we were given a room on third floor with no lift, my husband is 70 and suffers from asthma! Then the room the worst thing was the “double bed” which was only 4 foot wide so we couldn't move even to turn over ,then we had to have a freezing cold shower in the morning think is fair to say we would never stay here again
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Hey Ruth So sorry about this however rooms are generally not available till your check in time at 3pm. When you phoned we were able to move you to another room to give you early access without any payment. We didn't know on the phone your husbands ailments if we did and you could have waited we would have put you both on the first floor (we don't have lifts). So sorry you will never stay again with us as we have some stunning ground floor suites that I would gladly have upgraded you to. I hope your husbands asthma gets better and that the summer treats you well. Kind regards Marcus (owner)
Just returned from a 3 night stay to attend a family wedding at Oakland's. We found the staff to be friendly, our room was clean and had everything you would expect, food was OK but a bit overpriced. However I really think management need to pay attention to what guests are regularly feeding back to them:- >Please notify guests if you are hosting weddings during their stay as it is very loud until midnight (especially with two wedding discos at the same time plus rowdy guests) it's great if you are a wedding guest but awful if you aren't! >Family rooms directly above noisy veranda/bar/wedding venue also needs to be disclosed before booking >That staff will be busy with weddings and therefore ‘normal' guests are rather neglected eg) there maybe limited food availability, slow service and places to sit and relax outside. I think your feedback would improve greatly if you were upfront with potential guests about the noise and didn't juggle so many functions at once.
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for honest feedback. We do make people aware that at weekends we may have music until 12 however we obviously need to make it clearer. It's a fine balance to get right and in your case we didn't and I'm really sorry about that.. I'm going to sit down with the team and consider your points in more detail. Let me know when you next book and I'll ensure you are well looked after. Thanks again, Marcus (owner)
Spent 2 nights here at the hotel it is nice and has a nice layout. There was a mix up with our room which was sorted on arrival so thank you for that. Unfortunately our next room the shower water was warm, want to say thank you to Lynda front house manager for her help. If you have breakfast get there early it's meant to be on till 10 but I got down for 9 and there wasn't much left 1 egg 3 sausages and no bacon loads of mushrooms though.
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Hey Elric I'm glad we sorted your room and that Lynda looked after you so well I will pass on your thanks. Breakfast does run till 10am however if it's been busy it does take 5/10 minutes to refresh everything. Next time you stay let me or Lynda know and we will make you sure we look after you and have your breakfast ready for you. Regards Marcus (owner)
Great hotel, really friendly staff and the food was delicious. We stayed in one of the lodges and loved all the space it offered. We could even sit outside on our balcony in the evening and have a drink while the kids were sleeping, a great added bonus! Comfy bed, modern and very clean. Jo at breakfast was really friendly and very accommodating, nothing was too much trouble for her. Would not hesitate to recommend anyone to stay.
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
What a lovely review. Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know you had such a lovely time. Jo is great with our guests and she loves it when people mention her on TA. Please get in contact next time you stay it would be lovely to look after you personally. Kind Regards, Marcus (owner)
Went on a business lunch. Had gammon served with tinned pineapple and dried out chips. This was the worst meal ever. Gammon dried up and tough. Cheap cut of meat, I suppose. The lady next to me sent hers back as she couldn't even cut it. The replacement was no better. We were waiting for the accompanying vegetables to no avail. Just that! Even some frozen peas or a sprig of parsley would have been nice. I complained, but was told that was the choice chosen. That was no answer. I often like gammon, but not tough dried up stuff. One of my colleagues said even tomato ketchup would have been welcome to overcome the dryness. I waited ten minutes in the bar to get a drink with others. No apology given for the lack of service. Three customers were waiting and complaining about the lack of service. Eventually someone arrives and was so slow. No apologies except the comment 'No problem" four times ( a phrase I dislike) every time I thanked him.
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Carolyn So sorry for you experience. We've only just invested in some amazing kitchen kit that allows us to cook gammon overnight really slow and gives it amazing tenderness. I can only think someone has left yours on the pass to long to dry out. Did you let any staff know ? I'm looking into every point you've made to ensure this doesn't happen again. Please let me know next you visit and I'll ensure you have an amazing meal. I'll also show you how we cook the gammon. I hope your business meeting was successful despite the issues. Regards Marcus (owner)
Stayed here while travelling on business and really liked it. My room was a little creaky underfoot and the furniture a little old but that's character. Good bar and very friendly staff. Only negative was the breakfast which wasn't the best.
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your very honest review. We do have the odd creaky floorboard as the hotel is not a new build but in return you get the character that is so often lacking in modern hotels. Breakfast is work in progress as we are trialling lots of new things but next time you stay I think you will be really impressed. Thanks again we look forward to looking after you again. Regards Marcus (owner)
What a superb night in a very comfy bed and superbly laid out room. Apparently a party was taking place but didn't hear a think. The bar was nice and staff very friendly, excellent breakfast. Great stay
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Shaun I really appreciate your review. We do try hard and it's nice to see you liked breakfast as that's something we are trying some new things with. As an independent we really focus on ensuring our staff are warm and friendly to all our guests and it's grest you have experienced that. Please let us know next time you stay with us so we can ensure we look after you. Kind regards Marcus (owner)
Brilliant meal with great helpful staff, perfectly set out for a presentation evening. Disco and entertainment was great fun, and bar staff were polite and helpful. When organising the events team were excellent and offered lots of advice and opinions (especially Shelby and Sasha)
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks so much for such a lovely review. Everyone works so hard to get things right therefore it's great to hear when guests like yourself appreciate it. Please let me know when you are next with us so we can work even harder to exceed your expectations. Regards Marcus (owner)
We got married here. The wedding planners were friendly and helpful prior to the wedding. On the day our wedding coordinator was amazing. The day ran smoothly and efficiently and we felt very well looked after. The food was lovely. We had many positive comments from our guests about our whole day. Would definitely recommend as a wedding venue.
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
I'm so glad your special day was so lovely. I've been away on holiday so didn't get the pleasure to meet you for which I apologise. When you come back let me know so I can say hello and buy the drinks to congratulate you both. If you ever need anything at the hotel just let me know it will be a pleasure to look after you. Regards Marcus (Owner)
Attended a function for 80 people last Saturday. The marquee was set out beautifully staff friendly and attentive and the plated 3 course dinner was excellent. Lots of positive comments from all. Well done Oakland's we will be back
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
What a lovely review. We enjoy looking after our community and it's always nice to know we are doing such a good job. Kind regards Marcus (owner)
Stayed 2 nights for a family funeral. Rooms were average but the outer fire exit door right outside my room was left open both nights which is a hazard. I had to get staff both nights to shut it and they made out it was such an inconvenience when they even made a point of saying it shouldn't have been open to begin with. No one attended to my room after the first night. No one told us there would be a wedding party with music blaring out directly under my room until midnight - absolutely disgusting and ridiculous when I desperately needed the sleep. My room was also over some kind of fan or generator so had to keep windows shut when it was epicly boiling and no fans were available. Staff were generally useless. Good was fine but nothing to get excited over. It was an overall pathetic hotel and I definitely won't be staying again or recommending to anyone.
Oaklands-Manager, Owner at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
So sorry to hear your stay wasn't great. Sadly we have work going on with the roof and it seems you are right and contractors left the doors open. We do advise people that we have music at weekends until 12pm it is controlled however I accept it was too loud for you. My staff work really hard so to be told we are pathetic and useless is a little harsh however it's your right and I have to accept it. I'm sad you won't be returning as it always gives us a chance to make things better. Kind regards Marcus (owner).
Booked this hotel last minute. The place is very nice, staff friendly and efficient and in a nice location. Sadly the quality of food lets it down, massed produced and tasteless hence a bit over priced in my opinion. Apart from that can't fault it.
Oaklands-Manager, Manager at Best Western Plus Oaklands Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback Tom. Our menu is fairly new and we are still ironing out the creases. We do hope you come back and give us another try!
This was not our first visit to Oaklands, we had visited a few years back and thought it value for money. after a special offer email booked with my wife, our son, partner and young son. There was a wedding going on, wasn't told about it but wasn't too concerned. However we were booked into one of the lodges in the grounds, and were aware of house keeping staff in rooms above shouting and having general banter, no respect for guests. Then children from the wedding party thought the stairs in our lodge was part of their play ground! Guests at the wedding constantly came in and out of the lodge which has an external door, stairs to the suites upstairs - external door- bang our suite door then rattles badly! Went to enjoy our evening meal, the noise from the wedding was deafening! No quiet meal for us, no point in staying after for a coffee and nightcap. Returning to our suite I decided to grab a drink. The wine glasses on the side were disgusting, sticky and still very unwashed! Yuk! Our sons suite wasn't much better with a sofa covered in stains and stunk of pee! Not looking forward to trying to get some sleep with the disco still blaring and the blooming doors still banging.
Had to change rooms as the kitchen staff had a mishap in the kitchen setting the fire alarm off and causing our room to fill with cloudy smoke and stink of steak moved to a better room but with a wedding reception going on right outside our window it was hard to relax with all the noise and staff appear rude and look miserable and not welcoming wouldnt stay again also had to order a take away as food menu was so so poor!
I organised my sons wedding here and it was excellent. Danielle and Sasha helped organise everything and the day went very smoothly. Excellent day and no problems at all. From start to finish everything was perfectly timed considering there was another wedding, hen night and a BBQ it didn't affect our celebration at all. Well done all involved.
Good location for the city, surrounding attractions, the seaside resorts and the Norfolk broads. Good standard of rooms and friendly service throughout. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to visit Norfolk.
Stayed overnight on a recent trip to Norwich, we were not told there was two weddings going on at the hotel on arrival. There is a nice terrace garden area to the rear of the hotel but unfortunately both ends had been roped off for the two weddings leaving the hotel guests squashed onto a few tables in the middle. We were advised that if we wanted top book for dinner we had better do it now as it would get busy(still no mention of the weddings). We decided to eat elsewhere, on our return to the hotel the car park was full with wedding guests so we had to park on the outside of the car park under a tree, in the morning the car park was empty and our car was covered in tree sap and birds mess(just had the car cleaned that day) Our room was directly under the bar so the music was quite loud. Why did you not complain I hear you say? We would have not stayed in the first place if we were informed about the weddings. Breakfast was average not value for Money at £10 each . Not a good experience which is a pity because Best Western hotels have always been excellent in the past. We will not be staying again!!
We held my rugby club's end of season presentation evening here recently. From the initial booking contact the service was excellent. The event organisers Sasha and Danielle were always very responsive and nothing was too much trouble for them. They were also very flexible in allowing me to make adjustments and additions to the guests (almost 100) only 2 days before the event. The event itself ran very smoothly with excellent food and service. I would highly recommend this venue for any large function.
This is really not at an acceptable standard for a business hotel in the UK. I had a very very cramped room - possibly the smallest I have ever stayed in worldwide. I was unable to get a firm pillow, which I find necessary to sleep. I had a very poor first night's sleep. The staff were unwilling to resolve the problem. In the end I resorted to stuffing a number of bath towels into a pillowcase. The room was boiling hot, with no airflow. The room only had a rooflight only accessible by standing on tiptoe on a chair, which is probably not in accordance with health and safety rules. In addition opening the window was not a complete solution because there was still no airflow. The solution was to wedge the door open, initially with a fire extinguisher and then the porter was able to locate a proper door wedge. Despite being a hotel on three floors there is no lift. To avoid going up and down stairs continuously which was hurting my knees I attempted to ring reception on the internal phone, but it failed to connect, and there was no mobile reception in the room. In the end I resorted to calling reception externally using Skype. The main wall and ceiling lights were extremely dim, and there is an odd “strobing” effect from the main LED wall light visible to my eyes. While it had a nice large and good quality television, it is mounted very high on the wall and to watch it from the easy chair you have to sit with the head tilted back at an uncomfortable angle, and the main wall light reflects directly on the screen. Should try harder!
The hotel does look a little tired outside but once inside it is all very modern and clean. Our room was a really good size, Great bathroom with all modern new fittings. We booked a half board rate for one night. The restaurant was good, the menu was varied and the food excellent, Amy our waitress was brilliant both at dinner and breakfast when she had to rescue the toaster from the hands of my other half who had got his toast stuck. Couldn't recommend this hotel enough, we will return!
1. Don't believe the website! We were attracted by the menu, specifically the chateaubriand, BUT it's no longer available, and hasn't been for a couple of weeks. The restaurant manager said "We haven't got round to changing it online yet". 2. There was a wedding party just outside..... no problem with that, if we had been warned - we would have booked a different day......BUT we weren't. The disco started up halfway through our meal rendering conversation impossible. The restaurant manager said, incredulously, "It's Bank Holiday weekend!". So, EXPECT ALL MEALS TO BE ACCOMPANIED BY DEAFENING MUSIC ON BANK HOLIDAY WEEKENDS! 3. The restaurant manager has yet to benefit from customer service training. 4. The steak was delicious.....a jewel in the midst of disappointment.
Visited for the Carvery today but the hot counter had broken down. Jo the waitress said that they were still doing meals with a selection of meat served to your table & no change in price. Wonderful friendly service by Jo & the rest of the staff, we had beef & turkey with all the trimmings lashings of Gravy, superb & the right ammount of food. I have moaned previously about the Roast potatoes but this time they were perfect, was told by Jo that they have prepared them differently, good to see a restaurant listening to comments. A special mention to Matt the chef cooked & served a excellent meal under difficult conditions & I have to mention the roast pots again keep it up guys.
Stayed here for a wedding function (which to be fair was very nice - it's clear that this is done well). The room was clean and will equipped. So what are the negatives? 1. The breakfast was... not good. I mean really not good at all. Quite a limited choice of cereal and a barely warm, very limited cooked buffet (some of which was pretty much stone cold). I can't help but compare the breakfast to a Premier Inn breakfast and there really was no comparison. 2. The car park was completely full as they clearly cater for more guests than it can cope with. That would normally be fine, but the next nearest place to park seemed to be almost a mile away - not great when it's raining and you're dressed up for a wedding. I wouldn't have minded if there was somebody from the hotel explaining where to park. 3. The music from the wedding disco was so loud that it literally rattled the fittings in the room. Having a young child who clearly wasn't going to be dancing until midnight (when the music stopped), I'm not sure that giving us a room directly above the disco was a great idea. Again, I wouldn't have minded too much if somebody had had the foresight to mention it to us so we could be prepared. Would I recommend this hotel? Probably not, unless I got cheap deal and I knew there were no functions on, in which case it would be ok (although I'd give the breakfast a miss). If we were going to another wedding here I think we'd get a taxi and stay somewhere else.
We were looking forward to a quiet relaxing weekend. Having booked the hotel only a few weeks ago I would have hoped that I would have been told that there were 2 weddings on and no tables available in the restaurant. We have a 2 year old and the room was right next to the wedding party. Someone must have known and should have told us. Not impressed, and will never book here again.
As always a lovely carvery with good selection of vegetables!with the friendly staff and at such a good price who could ask for more!Just £3.95 plus a drink from the bar !such good value and keeping up the quality of the food !
Lovely stay at the hotel again, enjoyed the afternoon tea. Nice room on 2nd floor, very clean, lovely fluffy towels, only fault was the window in bathroom wouldn't open and it was a very hot day. Now a negative, we booked a table for 8pm for our two course meal, big mistake when they have functions on! We waited 25 mins to get the drinks we'd ordered and an hour for the starters, only to be then told they had run out of the salmon I'd ordered! I picked an alternative which arrived promptly, however we then waited a futher 45 mins for our mains. All in all we were in the restaurant for over two hours which did spoil our evening. Everyone in the restaurant was effected, can't fault the poor waiting staff, who were excellent, polite and didn't stress with the situation. We were offered some compensation in the form of having all our drinks wiped from the bill. The management really need to look at how they manage the restaurant alongside the functions going on in the hotel and maybe employ a few more staff. Having said all that we would still stay again.
Great selection of meals for the family also good vegetarian choices alongside the great carvery Easy to book and very reasonable Sunday meal prices Will come again the whole 9 of us Keep up the good work
Excellent food and service even though they were extremely busy. Waitress always had time to ask if we needed anything else. Just goes to show how popular they must be. Waitress coped brilliantly a credit to the hotel
An overnight stay and found the room( no.17) clean, comfortable and felt /smelt like it had been recently refurbished.Food was limited to breakfast which was very good with some excellent poached eggs from the chef and a very helpful and pleasant waitress. No noise problems the night I stayed there, in fact really quiet, but they do have a function room so probably best to check first if you are a light sleeper.
We booked 12 night 12-13th of April at this hotel First night wasn't great for me because I can hear a constant noise all night long like a fan noise or generator. However, next day I was given another room and I slept was so much better. First night we eat at their restaurant because we didn't want to go anywhere as we were tired. They had "eat as much as you like" ribs, wings and pork belly for £9 and that was fine for us. Not a posh dining but plenty and tasty especially the pork belly and ribs. The only criticism here would be that in the morning they had like breakfast brunch as it was pricey £15 but you could have eaten as much as you liked and probably quite varied. However, if in the morning you are like me, who likes her coffee most of all and lets say a croissant or 2 toasts and butter with jam, then perhaps they should have also an option where one can have that rather than such an extensive and expensive breakfast.
Friendly helpful staff. A choice of carvery or specials of which there were only two - pork chops or salmon . The carvery was 4 meats no crackling on offer with the pork. The meat was dry, the potatoes salty , the parsnips delicious . The vegetables were bland and some of the Yorkshire puddings under cooked. The salmon was tasty but the new potatoes were hard and the vegetables tasteless and I'm unsure what the sauce was. The puddings were good. We will not return
My partner and I stayed for one night after attending a function at the hotel. We paid way over the odds for the facilities and service we received. At £107 for the night (room only) we did not expect to be woken at 4am by a member of staff dragging tables around in the bar area below us. Hoping to be refreshed after a terrible night's sleep we found the bathroom had not been cleaned and the shower........(dribbling faucet more like) was less than acceptable. Upon checkout we informed the member of staff of our complaints and were met with what can only be described as an incredibly rude and abrupt response, suggesting that we should be more understanding of the night porter having to move "really big tables on his own". We were also told that we should have reported the shower and they could have found us another to use. Really? Guests should go to reception mid-shower and ask for another? That's the solution?! To be spoken to in this way and made to feel as though we shouldn't have raised our complaints is unacceptable at the least. I have stayed in better hotels for much less money and will not be staying again. If you want a reasonable night's sleep and to be treated like a human being - avoid.
very friendly staff. A good hotel in Norwich. The suite we had was excellent with huge bathroom, a kitchen area with tea and coffee making facilities. A seating area with large TV. I would definately reccommend this hotel.
Had a great stay with a Black Friday deal...so worth the money! The staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough to help! It's in a good position to go into the City Centre. Room was very clean, comfy beds and had everything you need. Will definitely be going back!
We had a lovely time at the party and my niece enjoyed it very much. The food was lovely and there was plenty to go around. Friendly staff and service. I would perhaps suggest a Prince as well as Belle and Cinderella but otherwise no complaints at all. Hopefully book to go to another one if it organised. Thank you
We attended The Oaklands this weekend for our daughters wedding in the Marquee. We weren't entirely sure what to expect having read mixed reviews but our experience was just wonderful. Shelby was amazing in helping us set everything up for an early wedding, and nothing was too much trouble for her and her staff. The staff were friendly and helpful, attentive and professional. The food was great and good choice of beverages. Linda on reception, and her husband as master of ceremonies, made us feel so welcome as soon as we arrived. We can't thank you enough for making our daughters day so special and arranging the sunshine too!
Stayed here for 1 night as I often work in the area . I got a really cheap room as the normal big brand hotel I stay at was fully booked . I will always try this hotel first in the future and not for the price . It is great to see that family run hotels. with a good old fashion homely feel are still out there . Nothing is too much trouble for any of the staff. On check in the receptionist had me laughing from the minute I approached the desk , she even involved her boss , who was also very friendly . I had a all you can eat curry which was delicious and well worth £9 , which the waiter recommended to me . The restaurant team were efficient and very friendly and the waiter was singing away whilst working , also making other diners laugh . Great to see staff enjoying their work , this really makes a difference to the whole feel of the place . I later found out that the waiter and receptionist were married and the manager was superb in promoting this . 5 * family run hotel with budget prices . A real must .
Room was quite small but okay. Bed was not particularly comfortable & the room we had must have been located in the noisiest part of the hotel, as we heard every noise on the stairs, corridor & room above. Also, we were woken early one morning to the sound of beer barrels being rolled into the hotel from the car park. On the subject of WiFi - there was none. My partner asked on several occasions why there was no Internet & were told it was being looked at. However it never got sorted in the 3 days we were there. Breakfast was average but was improved by Jo who served us. She was lovely and chatty and gave us some tips on places to visit in Norwich. Can't say I would recommend this hotel. Shame really as we usually like Best Western.
The carvery was great value for money at only £3.95 if you have a drink lovely and hot and very tasty meat melted in your mouth also home made Yorkshire's, not a Auntie Bessie in site. Staff very professional and polite always cleaning well done
Food was okay and so was the service, I would recommend and come back myself but it wasn't anything out of the ordinary. Can't really complain for the price though. When I come back I will have to try something from the menu rather than having the carvery
Had a party for my husband's 65th birthday. Was fantastic. We had to postpone for a week because of the snow. They went out of their way to reorganize for the following week. Food was delicious and accommodation was excellent. Highly recommended.
A lovely night away, was upgraded to a lodge free of charge, beautifully spacious, clean and a excellent spa bath. Would like to go back, and will recommend to others. The food we had was excellent, an afternoon tea, evening meal and a lovely breakfast. Staff very friendly and accommodating.
One of the best hotels in England for a long weekend to even longer. Extremely helpful team who go out of their way to make your stay extra special. Marvellous good food with excellent service. I will certainly return this Summer.
I've never done this before but here we go, I recently stayed at the best western Oakland's hotel in Norwich City few weeks ago and all me and my wife can say is praise for the hotel and staff. After having a little bit of trouble finding the place (I was the navigator) we were greeted by a very pleasant receptionist who directed us to our room, the “room” being essentially a nice one bed flat, which was clean and tidy. Having gotten back from our daughters baby shower, we decided to roam into the bar, for some drinks and dinner. Aside from the lovely atmosphere and slight bustle (it was quite busy), we were warmly welcomed by a young gent called Jack. After we got some drinks and my wife did her swooning, we decided to go into the restaurant and have dinner. I had the a burger and Kathy had the salmon, it took about 20/30 minutes and was OK, nothing special but was fine. The waitress we had was polite and hardworking so we were more than happy with the service we received. After dinner my wife went back to the room and I went back into the bar to have one more drink before going back to the room. Fortunately, I didn't make it back to the room for another 2.5 hours!! I'm entirely sure I would have gone back sooner if it wasn't for Jack!! He is such a credit to the place with his charm and banter, we talked about everything from whiskey to football to current affairs. Quite frankly, he's the best bartender I've ever seen in my life and, after several pints, a few perfect old fashions and a scotch tour (there's literally nothing that man doesn't know); we, begrudgingly, parted ways for me to return to the room. After a telling off from my missus, we relaxed in front of the rather large TV and shortly went to sleep. There was very little noise, and the bed was extremely comfy. We both showered in a very modern and stylish bathroom and headed into the restaurant for breakfast. I had a huge fry up and my wife had a croissant, both of which were tasty, with plenty of coffee to wash it down thanks to Jo. We checked out with ease and headed home with nothing but good things to say about the Best Western Plus Oakland's Hotel.
Well good and bad! stopped overnight as we were attending a wedding reception. Let me start with the good points, there are lots! A wonderful layout, and I should imagine a tip top place to go to in the summer as they have a superb outdoor area. The wedding meal, well I think it was one of the best I have had at any large catering event, where we all eat together. All three courses very well presented, and cooked well and hot, so well done catering staff at Oaklands. The breakfast also was of a very good standard, maybe a tad too much apple in the fresh fruit, but that's being picky! If you are considering having an event here then go for it. marquee was warm, which is a bonus in February. Did think the evening buffet was brought out a tad early, it was stood on the table for I would guess over 3 hours, near to the heater inlets, but saying that I ate some and was ok!. The down part, accommodation was not good value for money. Room was close to kitchen extractors, left a kitchen smell in your room. The shower provided warm, luke warm water for 3 minutes or so, had to run the bath to get soap off!. One side of the bed was against a sloping roof, you could not get out of the bed and stand upright......we did check rooms other members of our family booked, we did think as we booked first they would book out the best first? not so. In my opinion do not book rooms 33 - 40 I think it was.all that wing suffered from kitchen smells, and seemed as though they required updating............Shame about the room as it spoilt a really nice hotel.
We had a family meal here , I was reluctant to book as our previous experience wasn't good . But the waiter was exceptional. We had a few issues to start with. Our meals were over cooked but he soon fixed it and even turned the whole atmosphere around with his upbeat sense of honour . A real credit to the Oaklands, a good choice on your new recruit. Just what the Oaklands needed . Great customer service where nothing's too much . I will definitely return especially if we will be served by this waiter.
Stayed on a Sunday while working in norwich, the room was clean and comfortable lots of parking and the food was good, the drinks at the bar seem expensive but otherwise a good night stay, will return when next working in Norwich
Four of us went for lunch after booking a table. I'd looked at the menu on the website which gave a reasonably extensive menu at 12.95 for 3 courses which seemed good value. When we got there we waited for around 10 minutes to be seated. The menu was much reduced in scope from what was advertised on the website but was exceptionally cheap at £2 for the starter and desert and £2.95 for a main. We all had the carvery which was tasty with a good selection of veg. The main issue we had was with the service. There were very few staff to cover the restaurant. After waiting to get seated, we then had to wait for another 15 minutes for the drinks order. As we had gone for the carvery, we didn't have to wait for our mains. We intended on having a dessert but after another 15 minutes without managing to attract anyones eye (on the rare occasion anyone was near) we gave up and I paid at the bar. At under £20 for 4 drinks and 4 carveries, it was exceptional value but the service let it down.
The place is terrible honestly take my word for it do not book here it's a rip of and the prices for drinks well London prices are probably cheaper and the food is crap and all the food sat on folding tables before it got served up the place needs closing down
Staying here for a few months and haven't got a bad word to say about the place. The staff are very polite and friendly Jack and Malcolm have made my stay very pleasant and I would stay here again. Jack is the one of the best bar tenders I have met and he is very good at his job.
I have just come back from a black Friday deal, staying on a Saturday night at the Oaklands hotel. We are a group of 12 ladies, celebrating birthdays ages ranging from 35 to 60. Firstly we got upgraded to the outside apartments, they were superb. The cleanliness of the rooms was first class. The food was excellent, so well cooked, piping hot and a great choice. A very up to date menu also. The restaurant service was so attentive, they worked so swiftly and so polite. The bar service was so slick, cocktails were excellent. The reservations team, are lovely, so welcoming and polite. We did have a little issue with one of the rooms heating but this was dealt with promptly and professionally. Complimentary drinks was provided for the minor inconvenience. The hotel is in a great location for the city centre, we went into the city after dinner and the taxi was £8 for 4 people one way., also the same getting back. If you are looking for a great hotel at great prices, go to the Oaklands, well worth a visit. 12 very happy people. Thank you to all the Oaklands staff, great team effort and Management.
Well folks what can I say! Ive only given this one star because I couldn't give zero or less..what a night but for all the wrong reasons.. Made Fawlty towers look a class Act! ..£44 for a second rate disco with less than mediocre food! ..like dancing in someone's front room on a school night..the food was such a low standard that it was only fit for pigs but in fairness pigs would probably have been cared for better. We shared a room with a large party of pensioners who were visiting thursford on a much looked forward to trip out. They were treated as badly if not worse than us..shame on you! ..the food was dire and rationed..the setting no better..a cold marquee attached to the side of the main building with the ambience of a funeral parlour. I'm sure the DJ fell asleep at one point he appeared to be enjoying the evening as much as us. Upon voicing our disappointment, we were fobbed off with a bottle of wine and promises of a partial refund. Well 4 weeks, 4 emails and a phone call (to a machine) later we are still waiting! This place is a joke ..avoid at all costs!
My husband spent all morning singing the praises of this place and trying to persuade me to go there for lunch. I very reluctantly agreed after finding it gloomy previously. He convinced me that it had had a facelift and the food was amazing. Unfortunately we didn't stay long enough to find out. Sticky floors and broken glass in the restaurant along with the remnants of the new year's party the night before left us questioning the cleanliness and we left 5 minutes after arriving.
My partner and I had a lovely, relaxing time here at Oaklands over the Christmas period. Staff very accommodating as I am a guide dog owner, easy to find on bus routes too. But expect a short walk up a hill. The food was amazing throughout and the dining area was very clean. To be honest the coffee was amazing and reasonably priced. Bedrooms spacious and quiet (you can hear people wandering but that's expected), beds are a little uncomfortable but that could be our taste in beds. Oh and the wonderful jacuzzi bath - now that made it so much worth it. Only issue was the power kept cutting out in room Christmas Day but I think that was a minor inconvenience.
We visited this hotel for a two night Christmas break and what an amazing two nights we had! It's the first time we have done anything like this and would be happy to do it again next year. Staff, food and accommodation were brilliant- the staff were exceptional, everything was just lovely. Our Christmas lunch was lovely even though they were so busy, we didn't feel rushed and it was lovely and hot - well done to everyone who worked over Christmas you are all truly amazing ??
Had our works Christmas party on Saturday, and we all had a great night, staff couldn't do enough was a superb atmosphere! Will be booking them for next year 100%! Food was good for the meal well priced music was surprisingly decent as well
Visited the Oak Hotel for 2 nights as part of a coach tour while also going to see the Thursford Christmas spectacular. The hotel has received mixed reviews and real Jekyll and Hyde persona. We saw them both during the stay. On arrival reception was excellent, they came onto the bus and handed out envelopes with keys and information so we were quickly into our rooms. The rooms were good; warm, spacious, tea and coffee making facilities, nice bathroom. The meal on the first evening was enjoyable. It was Christmas and the Hotel does cater for parties, it's part of their signage, and the disco could be heard through the Hotel but as I am not a light sleeper, when returning to the room was soon able to drop off to sleep. Breakfast was reasonable, but some items ran out and it took a little while to find staff and have it replenished. Housekeeping were efficient, polite and helpful. On the Saturday night, we were told we would be joining the 90s and noughties buffet in the marquee. The buffet was turkey or tuna roll, ciabatta with cream cheese and spinach, warm ham, chicken wings and a mixed salad, 10 or so large plates on a round table, 100 guests, not the best organisation or buffet on a cold night. After complaints, chips, hot potatoes, chicken strips and a bowl of mixed veg (sprouts, carrots… must have been a spare dish from the wedding party also going on else where) arrived. Not the best approach to win return business. The staff in the morning at checkout were very apologetic about the evening events. The problem for this Hotel is that there is plenty of competition, even a Premier Inn just along the road. If it is a Party Hotel, it needs to be a lot better/inventive on its buffet. For us we saw both sides, for the Hotel we will not be returning.
Had a fantastic pre-Christmas evening with friends at the Michael Buble tribute night. Food was good, great service from Hollie & her colleagues, could not do enough for us, the mix of Christmas hits & cover songs made for a really entertaining evening. Would highly recommend this event next year.
I have been to The Best Western plus Oaklands Hotel for meals, events and stayed in the hotel. Its a lovely place with a great team of helpful staff I would 100% recommend a visit. Thank you all very much
attended a dinner dance Saturday night and we booked to stay too. Room was spacious, clean and modern. Our room overlooked the terrace giving us a lovely view of the Christmas tree and lights - made us feel festive! We met friends who joined us on Saturday night - food was good and we had a great night. Good choice of breakfast in the morning. Staff were friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.
20 of us booked a Christmas Dinner for last night. On arrival the small bar had a crowd of people waiting to be served. The dinner was dire, and the veggie option had to be returned to the kitchen. When it resurfaced the others had all finished, and was still cool and unpalatable. It was clear that other diners were complaining across the room. But apart from the food and drink the atmosphere seemed quite pleasant.
Was booked into Oakland Hotel after my booking for elsewhere was cocked up. Lovely welcome by reception staff. The room was small but spacious enough. The room was warm but probably too warm for some but ok for me. Tea tray well stocked along with toiletries in the bathroom. Bed was very comfortable. Niggles:- TV wall bracket is too big for the TV with bits popping out over the top of TV and I hate surface trunking as it looks cheap and an afterthought. The shower very noisy but I think that's because the room was on the second floor and the water needs a pump to add pressure. Bathroom was tight but manageable but anyone on the large side might have issues. I would stay again though.
Nothing was too much trouble, staff were willing to chat, afternoon tea with the Brat Pack was amazing, disappointed with the evening restaurant menu - not much choice however quality and quantity could not be faulted
Needed a room for the night and the Oaklands came to mind. As we booked through Booking.com it was a simple task. On arrival we were checked in with ease from a happy receptionist. The room was rather small but could not fault the cleanliness or the large amount of Tea and Coffee facilities. Overall a nice little Hotel in a rural part of the City and not too far out. There are local pubs and eateries if you don't fancy the menu.
We had a wonderful time at the Oaklands, the staff are lovely and the hotel itself is very nice. On arrival we were upgraded to one of their beautiful lodges, we had only booked a double room so we were very pleased. I think this happened due to them hosting Christmas Parties all weekend and they kept us away from the noise which was a really good idea. The problem we had was the key cards didn't work a few times and we had to walk to reception in the cold which wasn't ideal plus the area where the lodges are, are not very well lit. The Lodge was lovely with a huge living room, lovely bedroom and a nice bathroom with a jetted tub. We were so pleased with the room we would book a lodge in the summer time. The area is nice but not really walkable to the centre its about 45 minutes walk away perhaps in the summer you could, the bus is really easy and regular and a taxi for us coming home at night was £8.50 which is pretty normal. All in all we had a fantastic stay and we are hoping to visit again
I was given a suite, which required a walk in the rain across some muddy grass (not enough stepping stones) The wifi wasn't working and my fone didn't have a good enough signal to hotdmspot. Doh. I went across to reception, in the morning and waited 15 minutes, pressing the bell. No response. In frustration, I went to the kitchen.. And found x2 staff 'chatting'. Service was then restored. But still no WiFi. The room I had was adjacent to a noisy road, which I had to listen to, as I had to open the windows... The room was steering, stiflingly hot. Breakfast was, eventually and excellent affair. Give the morning staff a kick, alow the heating to be adjusted and I would go again... Just give a room though.. In and out the rain is rubbish... Or perhaps a covered walkway!!
Firstly, the satff on arrival where excellent. Nice lady booked me in and a very helpful member of staff sorted out a door keycard problem even though I suspect she was just about to go home. Room well appointed and very very clean. Nice big Tv, complimentary tea and coffee, tissues, shampoos in bathroom. Free wifi which works ! So why only average rating ? The noise from the party that was being held in the tent erected for functions. Yes, hotels can make money from functions but they need to be able to host them away from the main building. Having to stay awake until the disco is switched off at midnight is not acceptable. Car park was also packed with function guests which made my late evening check in a problem as I had to squeeze my vehicle in to a tight corner. Perhaps some reserved spaces for guests staying overnight.
Very disappointing. Arrived on a very windy evening to find that our tables were in a marquee! Not ideal at the end of November. Eventually someone deemed to flick a switch for some heat. This was short lived but nevertheless welcome. The food when it was finally served to table 5 was mediocre. The beef was ok but others were served cold cod loin and Thai green curry soup! The vegetables consisted of one small fondant potato accompanied by 6 Chardonnay carrots which were unpeeled and still had long roots and the tops attached. I trust they'd been washed! The bar staff were untrained in measuring and pouring 175 ml of wine without spillage then wanted to charge £11.10 for the wine and a half pint shandy! It was an awful meal in most uncomfortable surroundings. Not to be repeated.
Stayed for 2 nights while away for work. Bedroom was fine apart from how hot it was, I had the radiator switched off and window open and it was still boiling hot. Spoke to another person staying and he also said how hot the bedrooms were. Staff were all very nice, but a big shout out to Kieran who worked in the bar, he was so pleasant and such a great sense of humour, he's a credit to Oaklands Hotel.
Visited at 4pm on off chance of getting a table. Seated straight away even though Restaurant was very busy, all food constantly being replenished. Best carvery I've had there. Food was delicious. Staff very pleasant. Can highly recommend ??
Our room was fine and well maintained, with a comfortable bed. Breakfast was very mixed. On the first morning they kept running out of various key elements eg bread, bacon, fried eggs. Dinner was pre booked and ok. The big problem with this hotel is that it hosts lots of parties and weddings. These mean at least one disco, depending on how many events are on. The music stops at midnight but that's tough if you're needing to sleep before then. After the music stops there is no guarantee that the party people are at all considerate of guests who have paid good money to sleep in the hotel. Raucous noise can continue into the wee small hours with the staff apparently unable to stop it. The mainly quite young staff tried their best one night we were there but were overwhelmed. There is also a parking issue at this hotel. The car park access is up a slope via a fairly narrow road. If cars park on this slope it is a major headache. Again the hotel staff seem unable to prevent such cavalier parking even though it can make access impossible for an emergency vehicle.
The staff at the Oaklands hotel Norwich were absolutely fantastic from start to finish, from our first friendly meeting to book the venue through to the actual day the staff couldn't have been more helpful. It all made for a reasonably stress free day with the setting & decorating of the tables, looking after the guests and the food was lovely & bought out so quickly there were no tables left waiting. The surroundings with the garden & terrace area made for brilliant pictures & a relaxed atmosphere. We upgraded to a lodge which was perfect with plenty of space to get ready in and had a beautiful bouquet of flowers left in there along with a bottle of bubbly. What an amazing day we had!
I was due to be in Norwich early one morning for a charity event and thought it would be best to spend the night before. I always tend to research places a lot before staying so I know I get good value. I wasn't looking to find something expensive as it was just going to be me travelling. I started to speak to Suzannah Laurenco and she was more than helpful. With everything she had done to help me I thought this was going to be like a little break away and mentioned it to my wife and was so confident with staying that said we should both go. Risky move but it was definitely worth it. We turned up very late (which seems to be our only time keeping way), and even though there was an event in full flow the staff there was only too happy to help. In fact there was nearly a whole team to help us there and make sure we had everything we needed. Notes had been left on the system by Suzannah and had made special arrangements for us not only with the room but with the services available for us. Incredible service and amazing team which is clearly due to their manager Suzannah. We can't say thank you enough for turning what would have been a fairly standard weekend into a mini break away. Thank you so much for everything and will be coming back to see you again. Yours Sincerely, Mr & Mrs Freshwater
Having attended one of my daughters wedding reception at the Oakland's and having a good day and food I was quite pleased that my father had arranged for a family meal there . Well my daughters reception was good but it was a few years ago and blimey what a difference ! It looked so different , and unfortunately looks aside was a bit of a let down , the vegetarian menu was not great and the basic beer battered fish I had was a real let down , it was anaemic oily and partly undercooked and served with very few chips and a tiny pot of mushy peas . The ribs were no better than you would buy from Sainsbury's and served with little else and the family members that had steak said the steak was lovely and cooked to their requirements but again only served with mushrooms and chips and could have been bigger for the money . So on the whole a pub meal failure for more than the cost of an average pub meal . Erm disappointed . The good bit was the service and lovely staff .
Stayed here Saturday night for a Black Friday deal we booked last November, it was fantastic the offer was afternoon tea, night stay and 2 course evening meal for £68 it was worth every penny room was amazing clean spacious and everything you needed. Afternoon tea was delicious sandwiches, cheeses and fruit scones and cakes we were so full afterwards! Evening meal was one of the best meals we have ever had! All staff from start to finish very lovely kind and polite we will definitely be booking again!
As a group we have been meeting here in the restaurant annually for several years. This time, all but one of our group were served with inedible desserts - yes, I do mean inedible! The eton mess was just that with indistinguishable separate parts of meringue, cream and fruit and served in impossibly large quantities. The crème brulee had no top caramelised layer and the base was curdled, the white chocolate mousse had the consistency of tapioca pudding. The banofee pie was enjoyed by the one person who had it. On talking to the chef, he admitted that he had trouble with the egg whites for the mousse and that he had prepared the mess earlier on in the day. If you don't like decaffeinated instant coffee, don't bother to visit. (no 'real decaff on offer) The mains were enjoyed by everyone.
I stayed here whilst visiting Norwich in October (2017). I selected it from a hotel comparison website as the prices, whilst not quite the cheapest, were reasonable, and the reviews were generally favourable. To be honest I had other motives for selecting this hotel. Many years ago, as a young man, I worked as a drayman for a local brewer, and this hotel was one that I regularly delivered to. It was always one of the more upmarket (in those days), private hotels we called on, and it was also the place where my sister had held her wedding reception and my parents had celebrated an anniversary of note. So fond memories. I wanted to see how it might have changed. My memories plays tricks. It was not quite so easy to find as I imagined it would be, and certainly it's no longer the private hotel of yesteryear. But ti was fine. The room (in the annexe), was very smart and clean, but lacked a bit of decor. No proper wardrobe and not a single photo or painting on the wall. I will happily sell them some of mine! But the welcome was friendly,. the booking system was easy and the the breakfast, for which I had to pay extra, was excellent. One of the best hotel breakfasts I've had served. The waiting staff were all very friendly, and it provided the exact service I needed and had hoped for. Yes i'm sad it's no loner the old private hotel it once was, but nothing stays the same for ever. A good stay. Thank you
Me and my now Husband got married here 30.09.17 In the marquee and had literally the best day of our lives it truly was fantastic. From the moment we booked the wedding to the day we checked out the staff have just been fantastic. Sasha was there throughout the whole process answering any questions we had quickly and helping us plan our special day honestly say she is amazing at what she does and would defiantly recommend anyone to have their wedding here!...Shaun was our toast master he was fab funny and kept everything in order for us throughout the day we had a minor disaster with a couple of the bridesmaid dresses but Shaun was there on hand help sort it quickly. The lady who checked us in the night before (sorry I didn't get her name) as I stayed with some bridesmaids was lovely too had a few questions and request and she was on this for us nothing was too much bother. We upgraded both nights to the lodges and they were perfect esp for the morning of the big day with having our hair and make up done there plenty of space (and mirrors) for us all to get ready. Even the Dj the hotel use was fab you get to send off song requests ready for big day in advance so they know what your guests want and I had to borrow a last min cd to have when eating our meal but they were on this!...And bar staff lovely and friendly too. I can Honestly say the whole day was Amazing went better than both me and my husband expected! We're just gutted all over would definitely do all over again! All of our guest throughly enjoyed themselves too thank you so much to all the team at Oakland's you all created a fantastic day that We will never forget thank you Mr&Mrs Horne xx
A mate got married there well it didn't sell it for me as we are getting married next year they should be giving them a full refund the food was stone cold and wouldn't feed it to my dog the marquee was leaking +the orgàniser shouted out to the kid to be quieter wile they are doing speeches whàt à joke if I got married there I would of been so dissapointed PLEASE TAKE NOT DO NOT BOOK ANYTHING WITH THIS HOTEL it's not good London drink prices are cheaper
My Daughter had her wedding reception here. The venue itself was perfect, plenty of space for the children to play. there it stops! the roast dinner was a small pile of meat with two finger carrots and a florrette of broccoli with 4 small new potatoes. dessert was Eton mess with NO merrigue, the staff couldn't care less, once the meals had been served they disappeared until we had finished giving no chance to ask for more gravy or to COMPLAIN! My Daughters Wedding shoes also "disappeared" from the honeymoon suite and no one cared despite numerous phone calls. I would NEVER return under present management.
Booked a table for a birthday dinner expecting a nice quiet evening. In the bar next to the restaurant was a disco so noisy we could hardly talk. The food when served was cold and had to be returned to the kitchen. Apparently a new meal was being cooked but not so sure when it arrived back at the table. Doors kept being left open when wedding guests went into the marquee which caused a draft in the restaurant. It appears that when a wedding is on the restaurant customers get the second best. Never go there when there is a wedding on.
Stayed here at the weekend, food was good, room was clean but basic, the receptionist (Linda I believe) was an asset making sure I was happy throughout my whole stay with a professionally friendly approach. Would definitely stay again and nothing was too much trouble.
I stayed at the Oakland's hotel overnight. Upon arrival it was a quick speedy check in. The surroundings were very clean and welcoming, the staff were friendly and polite. The bar was nice, and the carvery and breakfast were of superior standard. The room was lovely, spacious clean and spacious. One minor issue, the WiFi was terrible, and the clock with the usb port for charging didn't work. Overall I'd highly recommend this hotel, and will stay in the future
We had our wedding at the oaklands 2 days ago now and we couldn't of asked for a better day. The staff were great, they were accommodating and lovely. We couldn't of asked for a better day or venue. Thank you so much!!! We'll be back for all our anniversaries and for some more visits without a doubt! Highly recommend!
Staff were young & quite unprofessional & slap dash - chatting at the bar & had to ask for change to drinks bought. Broken glass was pushed to one side rather than cleared off the floor. Charged three different prices for the same drinks. Drinks were expensive. Reception & evening food was nice enough.
Stayed here to bring my daughter to UEA. The room smelt of greasy meat and there was a wedding on so the music was playing until the early hours. Kept my daughter awake for ages. Wouldn't recommend it and won't be staying again.
We couldn't of asked for a better day, the atmosphere was brilliant and that's all thanks to the Oaklands Team. Visible teamwork and willing to go the extra mile to ensured a memorable day therefore we would be willing to recommend you to anybody. 10/10 service. Absolutely everything was perfect!
If I had selected to pick this place for a wedding venue I would be writing a formal letter of complaint to get my money refunded. On arrival we went into the bar area and ordered a drink whilst waiting for the ceremony to begin. My husband bought a pint for himself and a Diet Coke for me. It cost him £7.80. £5.05 for a pint and £2.75 for a Diet Coke. My husband used to work in London and said that they were more expensive than London pubs. We started drinking our drinks and we're told by the member of staff that we were to go into the room where the wedding was taking place but could not take our drinks. Those who had just bought another drink had to leave them in the hope they would be there when they returned from the ceremony............ this was not the case. The bar staff had tipped all the drinks away which led to unhappy guests. After the groom's mum complained, fortunately those who's drinks were thrown did actually then get another drink on the house. After the ceremony and photographs were taken, we were then directed into a marquee for our meal. We all sat there for about an hour and a half before being served our meal and not once did any member of staff come to the table to do a drinks order, it was up to the guests to go through to the bar and get themselves a drink. Now to the meal..... For starters I had the prawn cocktail and so did another guest sitting next to me. On presentation it look ok, but where mine had bread with the starter, the guest sitting next to me didn't, so she asked the waitress why there was no bread with hers. With that the waitress on demand from this manageress (I assume) who was trying to arrange getting the food out barked at this poor waitress and told her to get another one. After a long wait for the food you would have thought it would have been enjoyable........... No!! Prawns were chewy and tasted like they had been defrosted. Our main meal - Three people on our table had pork and one had the lamb. On presentation, it looked ok but one guest asked where the veg was.... it was under the three slices of meat. If I was the manager of this hotel I would have been embarrassed to have dished this up. The three, tiny new potatoes that were on the plate were that hard we struggled get our knife or fork through it, the broccoli had more stem than floret and one of the other guests on our table who meant to have the same meal ended up having completely different veg to the rest of us. The best part of the meal was the dessert!! Couldn't really have faulted the chocolate brownie, but I overheard another guest say that they ordered the Eton Mess but it came without any meringue. Whilst other people were still being served the dessert I did notice the so called manageress belittle the waiting staff. They were heading with desserts to one end of the marquee and she shouted "excuse me" at the top of her voice and asked where they were going, one of the waitresses advised they were serving a table down the other end and with that this horrible woman beckoned them back by using her finger and rolled her eyes at them. How rude and how embarrassing for the young waiters and waitresses to be treated like that in front of guests. After desserts the young waiting staff then started serving tea and coffee. Our table was given tea and when the waiter came round with coffee rather than saying excuse me to the guests who were talking whilst waiting for coffee, the waiter just stood there for a few seconds and then moved on to the next table. After dinner we waited for speeches, that had a male member of staff who took part as the toast master. In order he introduced the bride, groom, the two best men then left the room. He missed out one of the most important people..... the father of the bride. The bridal party looked quite bewildered that this guy had left and after waiting a few minutes for him to come back (which he didn't) the father of the bride introduced himself. Later on in the evening we went to order drinks at the bar and apart from one guy being behind there we tried to order a drink in which his response was, I don't work behind the bar. My husband then asked where the bar man was so we could order drinks and the response to that was I don't know. So politely my husband asked if he could go and ask another member of the bar staff to serve as there were people waiting. About five minutes later an older barman came through and my husband said that he thought it was pretty poor that our friends would have paid a lot of money for this venue and that there should really be more than one person running the bar. His response was, I'm not working this bar and it was our fault the other barman wasn't there as someone had ordered coffee and taken him away from his role. My husband replied with "I'm not the one that ordered coffee and whether I did or not there should still be another person behind the bar to cover." The barman' response to that was it is how it is and if you don't like it, don't order coffee. A brief description of our experience would be: Rip off prices No organisation Rude staff What an absolute embarrassment Would definitely warn off friends from this venue for getting married or even just going for a simple meal.
Booked in slightly early, but reception and staff ensured i waa looked after and let me have room when was ready.i was there for 2 days for my daughters wedding at venue.I must say we were well looked after the ladys who helped set room up looked after us, the organiser was great even though we over ran she ensured nothing was rushed and looked after my daughter her wife and everyone. The food was fine, loads of choice for breakfast... a great weekend... only very slight gripe was room was bit dusty but hey ho i did check in early.. thank you for making roxannes and fayes day so special.
We have just held my Mother's 80th birthday party in the small marquee off the terrace. I cannot praise the Oaklands enough for making it such a great night. The staff are absolutely superb, they cannot do enough for you and make sure that they are on hand all evening to attend to anything you need. They are so friendly and always smiling. We had a 3 course dinner which was delicious and everyone was commenting on the good standard. We all stayed overnight and were impressed with the rooms too. Our room was so clean, modern, bright and spacious. I understand it has just recently been upgraded and it really did look good. It is a lovely place to hold an event and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Thanks again!
Booked in here for one night as had a 10k race in the city the next morning. We just wanted a quiet, clean place to sleep with a shower and a comfy bed. Unfortunately the bed wasn't comfy and it wasn't quiet because there was a loud wedding going on till midnight. I get that it was a Saturday and had I been staying for another reason maybe this wouldn't have been an issue. When it comes to decor, like many a hotel room this could do with a make over, the furniture was dated and the bathroom tired. They have made an effort to put a new tv in and a few other mo cons. Though to be fair, I'd rather have a better mattress and a duvet that didn't feel like crepe paper than an alarm clock that charged my phone in a hotel!
Stayed twice in the last 2 months quaint hotel on the outskirts of Norwich close to Broadlands plenty of parking. With nicely appointed rooms and restaurant. Breakfast included and very tasty too. Value for money and good level of service. If staying at the weekend be prepared for a little noise as there's usually an event of some description until midnight. Not too intrusive though. Didn't see a lift so be prepared for carrying your luggage upstairs.
We were married in the Oakland's Hotel on 11th August 2017. Since our initial booking and continued preparation to our wedding, we found the Wedding Team and their Staff were exceptional and always willing to help with our requests. Nadine the Hotel Florist did an outstanding job with the flowers and is a credit to the Hotel. We had booked 15 assorted rooms for ourselves and our guests and all were very happy with the quality and cleanliness of their rooms. Our Wedding suite was beautiful and modern with a separate spa bath and shower. We stayed for 5 days and enjoyed every moment. The food was exceptional and of high quality and the restaurant looked great. With the hot weather the large outside decking area and grounds js a great area to cool off. The Marquee Room is an ideal setting for any wedding and ours looked beautifully set with the tables dressed and the romantic lighting during the day and night. Parking was tight at times but that's because the Hotel is very popular for its food, setting and wonderful Staff. Thank you so much for a wonderful wedding day and stay!!
Would like to say a massive thank you to all the staff at the oaklands for making our wedding reception a truly special occasion. We could not of been happier with how the day/evening went & the food was fantastic. The set up of the room was stunning & my new wife was stunned as well as our guests of how beautiful it was. Thank you so much!! Very kind gesture also with the flowers to my wife, very thoughtful :-)
Stayed here with my family (3 rooms booked) for a family wedding. Very disappointed at the amount we paid for the quallity of the rooms we had. Found a mouse trap and mouse droppings under one of the beds. We had a family room, a double and a single room - all of which were very small and cramped. Stayed in far better hotels for lot less money. The staff who were on duty we extremlly pleasant and helpful. The problem they had was there were not enough of them available to support the needs of people in the hotel. Not many amenties to offer.
Avoid booking this venue, its just not worth the risk or the thousands of pounds. Management and staff problems at the hotel left wedding party waiting for lengthy periods. The staff were asking even what glass to pour the champagne. Guests were kept waiting for the food and then when it came all of the 80 or so plates were either cold or mildly warm, people with the sea bass left food understandably (who likes cold fish). When told the kitchen REFUSED to HEAT the food Which when your paying for the best of the best is disgraceful that the chef isn't qualified to do so!! Staff were rude to guests in front of the other guests and even asked for their phone number (what so they could be harassed by perants of staff!! disgusting) for staff breaking down tearful when told the food was cold. I helped at the end with the tidy up after the DJ had finished who was great.. booked separately to the hotel. Left a expensive E-cig on the table and cigars just outside on private balcony door and when I returned they were gone been cleared away. Staff were asked but no one knew anything! In short I believe staff had cleared away and Stole them!

Thank you for your feedback - we have spoken to both the bride and groom who are delighted with how their special day went which is great to hear. We would like to apologise for the fact that a 15 year old trainee got confused over which glass to pour your champagne into and that our chef offered to cook a new portion of fish rather than re-heat the dish. We are also sorry the 15 year old started crying when told by a guest that she was stupid and a moron because she got her champagne glass mixed up when they demanded more champagne. We have checked with the chef again and he remains confident, despite your belief that he is unqualified, that reheating fish is not a great idea. We're also sorry that we had to remove 2 guests who continued to abuse members of staff however, screaming at a 15 year old and calling her stupid because your fish was not as hot as you required is not acceptable. Do you accept this behaviour at your place of work or is this someway different in a hotel? As for the mystery of the missing e-cigarette it seems that unless a member of our staff was working in a blue dress it may have been kept for safe keeping by a guest of the wedding rather than stolen by a staff member.
Number two daughter et family were en vacance in darkest north Norfolk at Sheringham. Invited for a day " sur la plange " with the grand children madam balked at the idea of five to six hours "en voitue" . So we decided to break the journey at at Norwich and explore the cities ancient Cathedral and enterprise of the good use the redundant churches commission had put many of the daughters to. We knew the route was tedious at best what few stretches of dual carriage way were always blessed with a multitude of tractored container trailers admiring the roofs of slow moving camper vans for miles in some sort of mating ritual. Can I can't I get by? Well on this one off them had got too excited and turned over on a round about trapping us in a queue for fifty seven minutes. You would be surprised how many pidgeons a few acres of ripening barley can sustain. The traffic had been heavy already so the satnav hour and fifty five was heading towards two and a half hours. So nearly two hours late all thoughts of evensong a mere whimsy. First impressions of the hotel were marginal keeping its best southern face to the Yarm. There was a large tent in the garden containing what I first heard as a Romany wedding. Images of big fat gypsies playing the violin and dancing as in the early Bond movie or worse karaoke! No this was a quiet Romanian wedding. Our room up one flight was a spacious twin the tv and wifi and kettle worked but not the same time. Too exhausted to explore Madam was content with a bag of crisps (no Vimto) and a glass Czech or Slavic lager. I had the same the beer was excellent and well, kept. We heard nought of the marital feast nor the car park only a distant wood pidgeon. We slept unshriven dreaming of over petticoated lorry drivers and violins. Madam even slept through my snoring without resort to spouse beating! The good sized en suite provide clean towels and easily operated warm showers. Breakfast was excellent with good service the morning after the wedding. You are not often made to feel welcome. Breakfast excellent although the diversity of choice was less than I had come to expect in a great western. Obviously plus is less. As I was packing the car the curiously located florist by the reception exit were loading their " flowers are us" van with reaths for a funeral and one of those names - good thing Madam missed her Christian name else she would not have let me drive.
Stayed here a couple of weeks ago for just one night to meet old friends. On arrival I was told I wasn't in the main hotel but in an annexe which turned out to be back down the drive on to the main road and in what looked like a separate house next door. I booked on line so didn't realise what The Annexe was. When I asked if I could swap rooms I was told the hotel was full which I doubt on a Wednesday night with a pretty empty car park, restaurant and bar. Couldn't prove that however so I moved my car and found my room which felt very much like a cheap overspill room although I paid over £100 for one night. I have to say that I didn't feel particularly safe in the room as I was on my own and there was no reception or any other staff so it was very isolated and I didn't sleep much. Having said all of that the room itself, although very small, had a decent if old fashioned shower but the en-suite roomwas like a tiny cupboard with no window or bath and you could touch the shower and wash hand basin from the toilet it was so cramped. There was plenty of tea and coffee however and a nice long mirror which you don't always get. Like someone else on here said, it was quite noisy in that you could clearly hear any noise other residents made because it was like living in a normal family home which had been split into multiple rooms with paper thin walls - very odd. On going back to the main building for breakfast the next morning I found everywhere to be very tired looking and a bit shabby. The floors and tables weren't over clean and the breakfast itself was way below average and what I was expecting. The scrambled egg tray on the buffet bar was almost empty and what was left was so dried up I could hardly scrape it out of the tray so I moved along to the fried egg tray. Here there were only two eggs left, lying in a pool of oil but having no choice, I took them. I actually couldn't eat them however as they were so rubbery I gave up and had a pastry instead. The coffee was free flowing but sadly weak and not very hot. I will be travelling to Norwich regularly from now on but won't stay here again and wouldn't recommend it. If it is a budget hotel hotel you are looking for in Thorpe St Andrew this place may be for you but if you wish to feel safe in a clean environment where you feel valued and wish to eat well I would look elsewhere.
Exallent service and meal tonight .Lady called Viv served us,perfection all round .The meal was faultless . Friends and family stayed here and said the hotel had everything you need for a short stay or a long weekend in Norwich. Thank you Oaklands Hotel
We have eaten here many times before and enjoyed the food on each occasion. This time we stayed overnight as we had a function to attend. The room was very clean and tidy. The bathroom was very modern and fresh looking. The room had all the extras you would expect. The breakfast was a buffet and there was a very large choice on the hot food as well as cereals, toasts, juices etc. Highly recommend.
I stayed here for a couple of nights this weekend. The hotel was good, very clean, nice (small) room, well decorated with a decent telly, and comfy bed. Wedding parties on both nights, but no problem, as they turned the music off at midnight ! The best thing about our stay, was the great carvery we had on Saturday evening (between 17.30 and 18.15) for £4.95 !!! Unbelievable value and the meat and veg were all top notch, no idea how they make any money on it, but who cares, just go !!
When we arrived, the temperature was bordering on 30 degrees Celsius and I asked if the room had air conditioning. "Sorry, no." was the reply. Fortunately, by opening both the bedroom and bathroom windows, I managed to direct what little breeze there was through the room allowing it to cool a little. The room itself was nice, clean although workspace was a little cramped and I was unable to use my laptop on the table provided without moving other items to the floor. The WiFi signal was very poor and intermittent at times although I did manage to get connected and a decent signal in the late afternoon / early evening, The bed was comfortable, not too hot and I managed to get a decent sleep despite the heat. My room was located directly above the terrace bar area, but the noise wasn't too bad. I ate there in the evenings and I have to say the food was a little disappointing - I had a prawn cocktail and to be honest, in my opinion the prawns were overdone, very chewy with a rubbery texture. I had beef burginon on one occasion and on another, peri piri chicken. Both meals, in my opinion were overcooked and, while edible, weren't as good as I'd expected. The buffet breakfast was good, although the sausages weren't to my taste - but that's personal thing. On one occasion, I arrived about 07:15 and there was no fruit juice out, no milk and no bread - they are supposed to begin breakfast at 07:00. Overall, I have stayed in better places, but it certainly isn't the worst I've stayed in either - if I were to stay there again, I think I'd be considering eating off the premises in the evening.
We had our wedding here on Friday so arrived Thursday afternoon with my bridesmaids. From the moment we checked in I was made to feel special and welcomed. Nothing was to much trouble! Friday morning I was panicking and worrying about the marquee being set up for the wedding as I had a vision in my head and was worried it would look how I wanted.....when i got in to look it was more then I ever expected. The days itself went brilliantly, timings went smoothly, only gripe was that 2 tables seemed to be waiting a while for their main meal but this was soon picked up when someone said something. Food was lovely, everyone was saying bow good it was! After the night finished myself and my new husband went to our lodge suite and was a bouquet of beautiful flowers for us from the hotel, such a lovely gesture. Sasha and Shaun and all the other staff, thank you so much for making our day all about us and making it amazing!!
We booked a suite for one night and were very pleased with the accommodation. The room was clean and modern with a large bathroom (bath and shower), the bedroom was a decent size with good wardrobe space and there was a small kitchen area with a microwave and kettle. Sadly, no cutlery or crockery, just a couple of mugs. The lounge had a flat screenTV, comfy sofas and a small desk in case you needed to work from your room. There was a small balcony with table and chairs, overlooking the pool and gardens, so a very nice outlook. Parking was an issue as there was a wedding, and this also meant a lot of noise, though, in fairness, the music stopped at midnight but the revellers were still rowdy. Main hotel and reception area were a bit dated and dowdy. We did not eat there as we had to leave early, so cannot comment on the breakfasts.
We booked with Oaklands a number of months back and called to make sure that it was a quiet spot and family friendly too. We have a 3 year old so wanted to make sure we were going to get a noise free environment for him to get to bed early and sleep ahead of a long drive the following day. When we checked in there was a very large wedding on and our room was overlooking the marque that was being used as the dining area. I asked reception if there was a band playing in the marque and was told that there would be no music from the marque as everything is in the hotel itself. This was on the 8th July so it was very warm and we had to open a window to cool down the room. We requested a fridge to store fresh milk and cold water, but was told that was not possible and to put a name on anything needed to be held and they could be put behind the bar. We went off for the day and met up with friends for a while. When we returned to the hotel at 8pm to put our son to bed, we found that under our window was a smoking area so we had to close the window, and that the reception for the wedding was in the function room directly below us (we were on the 1st floor). I asked at reception about moving, but due to the wedding they were full. I asked it it was possible to get the music turned down, or at least the bass turned off, and they turned it down for about 10 minutes and then cranked it back up again. We were told that the music would finish at midnight. Please understand, we could make out what the DJ was actually saying and our son was very hyper at this stage as he could not sleep. I went back to reception and checked out. I had to force them to put the refund on my card, and then we ended up sleeping on a sofa bed in a friends house. We have had no communications or apologies from the hotel since. We have been told that the hotel was sold last year and since then they are focusing on weddings rather than guests. If you want a noisy hotel with unfriendly staff then please book away, but for a peaceful weekend away, try somewhere else.
For £109 put into an annexe next door. The smell in the entrance hall was musty, sewage-like. Parking only for 3 cars. Paper thin walls. Room was ok. No ironing board or phone to call for one. Won't be coming back.
First impressions were Ok however they were soon dashed on the first night. Bed solid, pillows like telephone books & the noise from other guests was ridiculous. 2nd night not much better. 3rd night was the final straw....was quite pleased that there was no function booked as needed a good nights sleep due to a long drive today. However yet again rowdy guests kept is awake, then the fire alarm went off at 1.40am!!!! Impossible to sleep after that as constant shouting & people thumping up & down the stairs - left hotel at 4.30am incredibly tired & disappointed
Got married here on 14/7 in the marquee. We had the most fantastic day. I cannot praise the wedding team enough. From the moment we arrived, the servic, wedding breakfast and reception was amazing. They made our dream day truly perfect. Everyone was helpful, friendly and polite. The food was fantastic, and the whole day was run perfectly to schedule. From the moment we booked it to the day after the wedding the communication has been fantastic, they help with any little query, nothing is too much trouble. By the end of all the arrangements the team feel more like your friends than a business. If anyone is looking for a venue to have there special day in, you won't find a better place.
Arrived Saturday afternoon. Hotel doesn't reflect photos online. Doesn't overlook the river for a start and when it says 'situated in its own grounds' that means its car park! Checked in and went to our room. Key wouldn't work so not a great start. No towels in our room either so had to call down for them and they took a while to arrive. No ironing board either and so again had to request and wait for this from reception. There was also a wedding on which meant the hotel was busy and very noisy. Walls are paper thin so you hear everything from the corridors. There is also no air conditioning and so can become quite uncomfortable when it's a warm night. On a positive note the bed was comfortable and the shower very powerful but I would not return.
it was basic but satisfactory. I wanted to get nearer town but Norwich was all booked up. It was £10 in a Taxi from the station. Food was quite good. it was good value for money. Good off road parking. A lot of stairs to the top floor. Be sure you book an early check-in if you need to be in town for midday.
Stayed at the Oaklands hotel at the weekend, and when We got there it was like faulty towers I couldn't get to my room as it hadn't been cleaned yet, then when We checked into our room There was towels and linens all over the corridor and when I questioned this I was met with "I just work here, I do what I get told" An hour after checking in, the corridors were still covered in dirty towels and laundry. I then look in my room and for them to say my room was ready was a disgrace, it was clear my sheets hadn't been changed as there was a sock in my bed and a hand print of some sort of food on the duvet! All that the staff had done was make the beds not replacing the linens which in my opinion is the least any hotel should do Don't get me started on the state of the bathroom there was hairs in the bath and stale urine around the toilet The bed was comfy and the food was well priced but we certainly won't be returning The overall attitude towards us by the staff and the disregard to hygiene was appalling. The place was filthy and I advise anyone who is staying there bring your own bedding
Needed to stay in the area, and booked in the annex of the hotel because that is all that was available. The room was quiet and peaceful in spite of functions on till late in the evening in the main hotel, and being near the main road (but see below*). The room had clearly been recently built or refurbuished and was immaculate, though lacking in some things that suggested that there was work still to do - there was no wardrobe in spite of ample space for one in the room, and in spite of a large bathroom, the sink and shelf was so small that they was difficult to use easily. Parking at the annex is restricted to about 3 cars which is a lot fewer than the number of rooms it has (6?) and we ended up parking some distance away. *Room quiet except for the noise of the shower pump in an adjacent room, when it was in use. Conclusion: good try, but some details could do with improvement, then it would be excellent.
We had the Suite Dreams package. £89 in a suite., afternoon tea and 2 course evening meal. Nothing was too much hassle. Glasses and fridge added to room for free. Afternoon tea was lovely but we did not like the macaroons but everything else was lovely. 2 4 1 cocktails on Saturday night so had some of them. Yummy. The head barman was very grumpy though but the other barman were really friendly and quick. DJ on the sat night was really good and nice variety of music and just loud enough that you can chat as well as enjoy the tunes. Drinks out of 2 4 1 cocktails were really expensive but you don't have to drink there if you don't want too. Evening meal was included but not the biggest meal I ever had but very tasty. Breakfast was amazing we paid extra for it. THE BEST SAUSAGES I HAVE EVER HAD ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD! So much other choice. Room was very nice and clean. My only niggles were the windows were stiff and hard to open fully wide and the bed was really really creaky and a worn mattress it felt very springy. I recommend putting the fan they provide on as the discos on a sat are loud but only till 11.30. Didnt sleep well as it creaked with every movement. Shame as rest of room was perfect The venue and hotel is high quality and staff are very polite and nothing is too much hassle. Go here you will not be dissapointed.
Booked a birthday meal ,table for 7 people 20/06/17 table booked for 18.15 2 of us went up to get a carvery to find the remains of what were roast potato all burnt beyond recognition. I asked the guy if there were any more and he said no that's it with the roasts, had to have boiled potato instead. Daughter had gammon with two eggs on top the eggs were so over cooked they were crispy both sides and when we complained to the waitress she just said I'll tell the chef, we never heard any thing else ,wife got hers and the chips were cold had to be sent back overall small portions poorly cooked and over priced, would not recommend or go back again.
Diappointing hotel, not as good as other UK Best Western Plus hotels in the UK. Given wrong room at check-in. Kept awake until 11.45pm by wedding disco. Preferred to have dinner at the excellent pub across the road. Good location for buses into the city centre. Room was spacious and had a picture window, with nice view.
Booked a suite. Really disappointed. Nothing like the pictures. No bath. Just a disabled shower. Really warm rooms. Bar was good. With a nice outside space. Not worth the money it costs. Wouldn't go back
Arrived at hotel just after half 2pm and wasn't allowed to check in until 3pm. So had to wait around for half hour The lady on the reception was not overly welcoming. Was in room 35. Very clean and basic. Room very hot no air con facility so requested a fan which we didn't get until gone mid night. Beds pillows comfy and slept okay. Went down to breakfast got seated then was given cutlery. Went up to get food returned to table and my cutlery was missing and it took at least ten mins to find a member of staff to ask for some more. We asked for scrambled eggs to be made if possible without milk due to an allergy but it was not accommodated. We had to ask for extra bread as there was none for toast. The night before had a party and the downstairs ladies toilets were left in an awful state. Some members of staff were rude and we're not helpful or accommodating. We only used this hotel for overnight stay due to going to a concert at carrow road. About a 40 min walk away from hotel. Word of warning... if you have a mobility difficulty please re consider using this hotel. There is no lift and you have to use the stairs. I would not say that this hotel is disabled friendly. All in all an OK hotel for what we needed
Booked the Oakland's for my daughters wedding ,very glad we did the organisation ,the ceremony ,the reception were all first rate . Arrived with my daughter and we were met by Shaun and Sasha (the wedding planner) we were running slightly late but we were not rushed and were given time to take photographs with the bridesmaids before we went in ,we were then met by the registrar ,who explained everything that would happen and basically answer any questions we had . We entered the room ,which was arranged very well and exactly how we wanted it . The wedding breakfast was very nice indeed ,there was prawn cocktail ,bbq chicken wings and a vegi option for the first course ,mains was Turkey ,gammon or vegetable Wellington ,served with a plentiful supply of vegetables and roast potatoes ,dessert was Eton mess ,profiteroles or fudge cake ,served by a very efficient staff ..there was also a children's menu ,chicken nuggets ,chips and peas ,followed by jelly . Sean acted as toastmaster announcing all the best man ,father of the bride speeches etc ,and the afternoon went off without a hitch . The guests could then wait outside on a veranda ,exclusively for the wedding party or in a very nice bar . The room was then sorted for the evening reception ,plentiful tables inside and out and a very nice buffet was served in the evening . All the bar staff were fantastic and the whole evening went off very well . We stayed at the hotel and the room was spacious ,very nice bathroom ,free Wi-Fi and satellite tv ,the bed was king size ,with a very comfortable mattress and we spent a very quiet night indeed. At breakfast the helpful staff moved some tables together so the wedding party who stayed overnight could sit together ,breakfast was lovely ,full English (black pudding as well ) ,cereal ,fruit juices ,yoghurt ,cold meats and fresh bread for toast ,was an absolute God send after the night before ,check out was 11am and that was that . Can't thank the hotel staff enough for helping the day go off perfectly ,everyone had a great time . For a carvery ,overnight stay or as in our case a wedding reception I would certainly recommend this hotel and function rooms.
I stayed for one night in room 33, the room itself was clean and tidy - the bed and pillows where so hard i might swell of slept in the carpark and been more comfortable. The room also has the extractor outlet for the kitchen above the window which meant the room smelt like fat and cooking in the evening and first thing in the morning which was no -pleasant. the room was in the roof so it was boiling and i needed the window open so everyone leaving the party kept me up and the place creeks like you wouldn't believe so all the people going to rooms as late as 1am kept me up also. No fans where available and no air con either. Breakfast was nice and enjoyable - The low flying fighter jet at 10am not so much!!!
After driving over 5 hours to arrive in the middle of the night, we just wanted to get are heads down for some sleep. Shame we weren't going to get much. We were put in the house next door to the hotel, very confusing to find as it looks like someone else house. The house consisted of 6-8 bedrooms, very small and cramped. We even had to share with a family of large spiders in our bathroom! There's no phones in the bedroom and even if there were, there is no point as no one answers as they were having issues with their phone lines. Car parking was ok, and location wasn't bad either but next time we visit this will not be on the list to check availability.
I stayed over for 1 night whilst visiting my son who lives in Norwich. The bedroom was clean and tidy and I was pleased to find the windows were open to let in fresh air prior to my arrival. A fan had also been left in the room which was thoughtful as it had been a hot day. The bed was quite old and had very noisy springs and wasn't particularly comfortable, but manageable for 1 night. The bathroom was huge with a shower over a bath. Plenty of towels and toiletries. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. After 1 night I checked out and left the hotel, and about 3 hours later realised I had left my earrings in the bathroom. As the hotel was nearby to my son's flat I returned and asked the receptionist if they had been handed in. She kindly took me back to the room to check, and found that housekeeping had already been in and cleaned the room. Whilst I waited in the reception, the receptionist kindly located the head housekeeper, and found that they had put my earrings aside in a bag with the room number, in case they were collected. I was really pleased that they had been found. I would definitely return to stay again at this hotel.
Probably the worst hotel I have ever stayed in! If you want to sleep, that won't be happening at this hotel. We arrived after a 4 1/2 hour trip from Buckinghamshire, so a pretty long drive, from 9pm to 1:00am there bar was over crowed and they were running a quiz night using a PA system, laying in bed I could hear every question that was being asked, I could hear crowds of people cheering and yelling. I had to go filming the next day for 11 hours and really needed sleep. I got back from filming the following night to find another event with loud music playing. It was very hot in my room and I wanted the window open but couldn't because of the loud music. This hotel needs to remember they have other people staying at the hotel, they need to decide if they're just going to have events or just have people stay, they can't have both. Rooms very small, beds are also quite uncomfortable. All of the doors bang when everyone goes through them. The floor boards creak. The walls are paper thin, I heard everything I could possibly hear at this hotel, they just don't want you to sleep. I would suggest going up the road and stay at the premier inn. This hotel is not worth the money one bit. You have been warned!
Very friendly staff, welcoming and accommodating. The location is good as it is a short distance from the City centre. Our room was on the first floor above the outdoor terrace which was busy but this quietened down while we were out. Our room was nicely laid out, clean, and spacious with great views. We would definitely stay again.
Unfortunately this is not the best hotel we have stayed in. We travelled down to Norwich from Wirral to visit family for the weekend. We arrived just after midnight on the Friday, as a wedding party was ending. As we were arriving late, we did try and contact the hotel however every option was to leave a voicemail. When checking in, we were advised that were we were staying was actually back down the drive from where we drove in and on the right. We decided to leave the car in the car park and went back down the drive with our luggage, and went past was can only be described as a half way house, with a couple of young men drinking stella outside watching us. After looking for a couple of minutes, we could not find our accommodation, therefore we had to walk back up the drive, past the "halfway house" to ask at reception again. At this point, they advised it is a house at the bottom of the drive and would arrange for someone to direct us. As you could imagine, as we walked down the drive, we were all praying that "the halfway house" was not our accommodation, as we were ready to sleep in the car there. Luckily-ish we were actually staying in, a house opposite. Seriously a house, that appears to have been bought by the hotel and made into 8 bedrooms. In this 8 bedroom house, you can hear everything. The wedding guests coming back, carrying on with their evening, TVs on, toilets flushing etc. With this just being a base to stay, it was not worth complaining. The main part of the hotel seems lovely, and the grounds for weddings etc. Hence me giving this a 2, if you are lucky enough to stay here and don't get put in the house down the drive, next to the half way house, i'm sure it will be a lovely stay
I was pleasantly surprised when I entered the.The staff were friendly and it seemed like a nice peaceful and quiet location. I was even more pleased when I entered the room as the amenities were much better than I expected for the price. Unfortunately I had virtually no sleep due to what reception believe may have been the nightporters banging around all night above room 21. It was hideous and if this is necessary then they need to make the room redundant or invest in some serious sound proofing. Had a big presentation to deliver today - not great on such a lack of sleep.
Treated my wife to stay in a luxury suite to celebrate her birthday. Lady on reception was friendly and efficient. Was shown to our room by lady carrying our champagne and chocolate dipped strawberries. Great start. Lounge area was big and reasonably furnished. A rug would have made the room seem more homely as there was a lot of laminate flooring. There was a sink and tea/coffee making facilities. Coffee was made by using a cafetière which was only big enough for one cup. Bed had a heart formed by rose petals. Nice romantic touch as advertised. There was also a candle and sensual oils on the bed. Bathroom had bath and separate shower. Good standard with complimentary shampoos etc. Bath water not hot hot. Door in lounge led to private balcony. Think we had the only balcony without table and chairs. Went to reception and this was soon rectified. Chilled for the afternoon and looked forward to meal and drinks in the Oak bar. Took advantage of the two for one cocktails. Ordered our food. Again staff very helpful. My wife was happy with her calamari starters, my Camembert could have been hotter. Again the wife was happy with her mac cheese main. My chilli burger was good but very disappointed with 'chunky chips'. They weren't chunky. They were frozen oven chips and let the whole meal down. When you're paying £14 for burger and chips you don't expect frozen chips! I pointed this out to the waitress and she agreed they were frozen and offered to change. We have stayed and eaten at the Oaklands before and have enjoyed our previous experiences but felt there were a few things a miss this time. Breakfast was very good as usual but considering the charge for the luxury suites I consider the whole experience as being average. We will be back, if welcome as one experience does not cancel the good experiences we have had the past.
Stayed for one night, that was enough! We were given room 33 on second floor in the roof space with the kitchens extractor fan directly above us. Even with the window closed during the heatwave, the smell of chips was overpowering. Complained to Best western who deny all knowledge and say that no ones complained before! Reading the previous reviews I guess some one has! Avoid this hotel like the plague!
we stayed on Saturday night , not warned of the late music , very hot night and no fan in our room and the bedding of a really poor quality , worst pillows ever . The room was clean and staff very pleasant , but overall not a great place to stay will not return .
Stayed here bank holiday Sunday for a "quiet evening " oh dear not as planned it was heaving lots of very drunk parents with children of all ages which I think is irresponsible of the staff to allow! Children were running wild! We went for an evening meal there was very limited choice so ended up paying £10 each for a carvery. Our room was boiling no fan and it was very dated. I did speak to staff about issues and they did give us some free drinks and were very nice about it all that's the only reason 2 stars otherwise it would have been 1! We got a bank holiday deal and I have stayed before and been very happy! They seem to be branching out which means a lot of very drunk people it's a shame! But very nice staff
I stayed here last week for 2 nights while on business. The rooms were fresh, clean and comfortable. I ate in the restaurant several times for lunch and evening meal, each time the food was excellent and extremely reasonably priced. I was particularly impressed with the club sandwich which came with a beautiful salad and tasty chips. The waiting staff were polite and helpful as was the bar staff. Unfortunately my company had forgotten to book me in for the Wednesday night stay and when I discussed the issue with the receptionist she couldn't have been more helpful. Being a workman and needing to wash before heading home to Scotland she allowed me access to a room so I could get cleaned. I was so impressed at her can do attitude and the service I received from her was the best I've had around the country. Thank you. Definitely a hotel I would book to go to with my family in the future if we are down that way.
Me and the hubby stayed here for our nieces wedding a couple of weeks ago. We live locally but thought why the hell not, lets splash out so we can have a drink. We were checked in by the very lovely Hollie, she went way above her pay grade for us I'm sure. There was a couple of issues with our room, mainly the stairs as my hubby struggles to walk and we were on the second floor. Hollie upgraded us to a suite as it's the only ground floor room available, she also had to clean the room herself which whilst we waited we were offered a free drink! She was really lovely from start to finish, also whilst helping other members off staff from what we could see. The suite was absolutely lovely, it was ideal for us with the living space separate. We weren't expecting such a nice room so it was a lovely bonus. Clean, and all the amenities we needed. We had dinner in he restaurant, I had Salmon and hubby had the steak, it was superb. Excellent service from Rebecca. Breakfast, although a little pricey at £8.95 was lovely .. all we could ask for, and more. I really loved the jams! to our surprise, Hollie also served us on the Friday morning, her customer service was amazing, catering to my hubby's dietary requirements as much as she could. I can't wait to come back, and this time we will book a suite. Our wedding anniversary is in July so hoping to book in again real soon.
My friends daughter was getting married at the hotel so my wife and I decided to have a few nights break at the same time We booked one of the suites and found it to be very comfortable and perfect for our needs The staff were great on the whole and the food we had was all fine There was a sign up in reception advising that music will be played till midnight To be fair it did stop at midnight and it didn't bother us in our room anyway The wedding itself went well and everyone enjoyed the day I had a few niggles which were just that, niggles. Upon arrival we were given poor direction to the room. After a ten hour journey we would have appreciated a hand with our luggage and being taken to the room The toaster at breakfast only did two slices at a time which was a little inconvenient The fridge in our room was noisy at times All in all five happy nights and we would happily stay again
Went for a weekend break, near enough to the city but just far enough to be nice and quiet. Lovely room that was not the usual "corporate cube". Good bar, good restaurant and the staff were excellent too.
Spent 2 nights at the hotel on a short break to visit the local area. The breakfast was advertised as 'Full English' and I would say it was an excellent 'FULL English' - sausages, bacon, beans, fried bread, fried potato etc etc even my favourite - black pudding! :-) The room itself was clean and comfortable with all I needed plus a daily refresh of the bathroom towels and toiletries. The free wi-fi was a reasonable speed with plenty of places in the room to locate the laptop for comfortable use. Enjoyed some drinks at the bar but except for breakfast, did not have any meals so can't comment on the experience, but the staff were very friendly and helpful.
I was very impressed with the clean room, fantastic food and excellent service. Jo and Lucy made sure that our stay was comfortable. We would definitely stay there again. It was a relaxed atmosphere, but efficiently organised.
A big party of us went here, ambience was good, service was good, atmosphere was good but the food was distinctly average We had chicken liver pate which came with 3/4" of a slice of toast. Why not give you the full round so you actually had enough for the pate? I mean seriously are they saving that much by not giving you the other 1/4? The chilli burger was ok but I had actually forgotten it was chilli until my son asked if it had chilli as he could not find it in his. When we looked there was about a teaspoon of chilli in the middle - not worth the £2 extra over the normal burger! Profiteroles 4 small ones for £4.95? Like I said nothing wrong with the food just not enough, and nothing to shout out about which is a shame as the food used to be spot on here.
Not a bad location for Norwich. A bit on the modern clinical side of décor. Staff very keen to clear the restaurant once the clock hits the witching hour. Generally it is a nice hotel with motel suites.
Stay befor in 2016 when it was lacking. This visit was fine.. Good room, good service and a breat location. The bad points - The receptionist disappeared for nearly an hour when I wanted to settle my bill and check out. The dining room for breakfast was very poor. No tables set-up, no atmosphere, dried out and dead food. But over all it was a lot better.
I loved the carvery at the Oaklands last year. But since they brought the price down to £3.95 this year, it has been getting worse and worse. First the lovely stuffing balls turned into a bowl of lower quality stuffing you had to scoop out (if there was any stuffing at all!). And now the parsnips and red cabbage had vanished completely when I went for lunch last week. Still good value for £3.95. But I would rather pay more and it be how it used to be. Obviously they have the Townhouse down the road to compete with (mainly for the OAP customers on a limited budget). The Oaklands used to be much better quality, but now it is very similar to the Townhouse. I will be going to the Red Lion in Drayton from now on.
I was with a large group of ladies, all Red Hat Society Queens ( look it up on the web ) and the hotel treated us royally. My room was very comfortable with a good hot shower. Living in France I do miss good thick bacon and a decent sausage. I was not disappointed at breakfast. Yes, I did have to wait for fresh eggs to be produced each morning and some people complained about that but actually, I appreciated the fact that only a few were produced freshly instead of large numbers being left to congeal under the lamp, The staff were all smiling and friendly but I must mention a few in person. Vicky, who guided me through the group booking process and managed to sort out a blip that occurred along the way, the two young ladies on duty in reception on Friday morning who helped me out of a fix when I did not have enough sterling for the bus fare into the city where I would change my currency and Malcolm on night reception, who came to my aid and printed out my return boarding pass when the App on my phone refused to function. It was a very pleasant stay. However, I must mention a couple of problems. My husband tried numerous times to telephone me when I arrived on Thursday night. No one was answering. Only a computerised press this or that - none of which applied. There was a wedding reception taking place but reception should still have been manned. When I arrived I had to search for someone to book me in. There was also a problem with the key cards. We were continually having to return to reception because our cards would not work in our room doors. We were told that if they are anywhere near to a credit card or mobile phone they are wiped clean of the door code. I have used these cards all over the world and never come across this problem before. Might I respectfully suggest that the management investigate new software for these cards.
Wish I could give this place a better review but can't. Visited twice for a carvery in April. First visit I couldn't knock the service the staff were incredibly friendly and service was good but we were let down by our desserts having mouldy raspberries. Our second visit was completely different. We ordered starters and as my daughtervwas down to the last 2 or 3 prawns on her plate she found a small dead fly. We then had to wait 10 minutes for someone to appear at the carvery to serve us, some of the veggies were extremely overcooked, and then service at our table was non existent so we couldn't even order more drinks or coffees. Don't think we'll be going back a third time as am dreading to think what extras we may get in our meals next time!
From the moment we arrived the staff went out of their way to make our visit great. My room is lovely, the food very nice, the wedding excellent. Got a really cheap deal on the room (plus breakfast) and all it's just brilliant. Very happy!
I booked a overnight stay on the Black Friday deal back in November 2016 for our wedding anniversary 6April 2017 ,those dates were full so I booked the following week,we arrived at the oaklands check in went to our room which was lovely, good size nice bathroom and shower.Evening meal was good with good service, few drinks in the bar ,there was a DJ and the music was quite loud but quite refreshing to see a place with some life in it and seeing people enjoying themselves in a good atmosphere. The breakfast was self service with every thing you wanted, the staff were very helpful and willing, we enjoyed our stay and will definitely come back
Booked in for seven nights all went well until on the third day I noticed that the sheet had two small rips in it and and on closer inspection noticed that the duvet cover was also ripped, I reported this to reception and the bedding was changed so that was sorted. The following day I went down for breakfast only to be told I was room only, I then pointed out that I had already had three days breakfast without any bother and was told that someone was not doing their job, I had to prove to them that breakfast was included, it was booked through Booking.com I also had the same problem the next day, fortunately on the remaining two days I had the lady who challenged me the first time and was allowed in without anymore bother. The single room was classed as an economy room and thus did not have a window I could see out of except by standing on a chair to look out of the velux window. Would I use this hotel again? well I was visiting relatives, one lives 1 mile from the hotel the other lived 1.6 miles away so I may use it again but only for that reason.
We had come here for the Black Friday deal last year and decided to do it again. A little different to the last deal, this year there was no bottle of Prosecco which we got last year...just a glass each and breakfast had been included last time but it would have been £10 each for breakfast this year so we didn't bother as can get breakfast cheaper elsewhere. The afternoon tea is nice, not the best presented as it looked like the sandwiches had been rushed. We had cheese&pickle, turkey&cranberry, egg, tuna (though the tuna was barely there, mostly just bread&butter)and beef sandwiches. Quite a few squares of sponge cake...one orange, one pink which looked like something you'd get at a 4 year olds birthday party and one toffee and a couple of little chocolate bites and a tiny raspberry cheesecake thing,so not much varied choice...and there was a fruit scone which I found very rubbery so didn't finish it,and a savoury cheese scone.Clotted cream and jam,and a pot of tea. We had our prosecco with our evening meal as we thought it would be a bottle like last time. The evening meal was delicious...I had beef bourginon and it was really lovely and tasty and had prawn cocktail to start...again,really nice. We had a couple of the cocktails on the bogof offer....you have to order 2 of the same for this offer which I found a bit strange as they all cost exactly the same so it's a sneaky way of getting you to order more if you don't want the same cocktails. We didn't want the same so had to order 2 of the one I wanted and 2 of the one my husband wanted....just don't think that's necessary. The staff are lovely,Lucy in the restaurant in particular...very friendly and helpful. The room we had was nice,it was on the first floor so we had guests above us and, because the floor was very very creaky above it did disturb us. Would go for a 2nd floor room if we could next time. Thought the bed was comfy.
Visited following marketing email from them earlier in year where you could stay in beautiful suite (woodland apartment) have prosecco afternoon tea and two course meal for a fantastic price of just £89 that included stays on a Saturday night. Vivian (apologies is spelt incorrectly) served us immediately when we arrived for afternoon tea and we were sat on a lovely table that was facing the patio with blazing sunshine coming through the fully opened doors. A wedding had then finished so we got caught up in the wedding party but she made sure we got seated and served really quickly. Nothing was too much trouble. My only negative about this area was the smokers were directly outside on the patio so smoke blowed in which was a real shame and maybe to improve things there could be an announcement or sign to keep smokers directly away from this lovely area. Checked into the lovely apartment which was comfortable huge tv (not one in bedroom but hey maybe a suggestion?) needed a good dust under bed if I'm being critical (don't usually look under bed but I'd lost slipper!) Really relaxing stay lovely patio kitchen area good but no plates or knives for the toast (toaster provided which we thought was good) evening meal delicious again served by the excellent Vivian she really did care about us enjoying the food. I do think having a wedding party (disco) in one room together with professional DJ in bar is a little overkill on noise (two discos playing different songs different beat was quite hard to listen to) but everyone seemed to enjoy the bar disco and it's great if you want a night out in great surroundings and want to dance and drink cocktails. (Drinks are nightclub prices but hey got to make money somewhere) I would definitely consider having a function here if the service is as good all the time as I couldn't fault it. Well done The Oaklands staff and what a great renovation job to create such great surroundings now.
Visited for Mothering Sunday on arrival we wasn't down for a table when my friend has booked it 3 weeks before so that was disappointing so had to wait for the staff member to get us a table when shown to our table after a 30 minute wait Then we went up for food they had run out of veg Yorkshires was cold not under the hot counter I think on big parties there should have been more staff to accomadate the huge amount of people there
I have been staying at this venue over the past few years, but hadn't visited in a while. Was a little dubious as to whether it would be as good, but received a pleasant surprise to find my stay even better. The reception and dining staff are alway very pleasant and helpful, but the bar staff were particularly friendly and accommodating in this instance. I usually opt for the carvery and sit in the dining room on an evening which is superb value for money. The bar area was very inviting though this time so I enjoyed my meal here and eating alone found the atmosphere and surroundings much better. I chose a main and dessert from the bar menu, and the quality was superb and great value for money considering the size of the salmon dish I chose. Breakfast here is always a favourite of mine, and nice to see they now provide yoghurts on the buffet, which I had previously suggested a number of stays ago. Booked again to go back later this month, can't wait :)
Once again we had an excellent stay at the Oaklands. On arrival we were greeted by friendly and efficient staff. We were given keys by coincidence to a room we had had before. A lovely room with everything we would need. Well cleaned by housekeeping. Our only compliant we would have preferred black out blinds so it was dark in the room. The afternoon tea was delicious with lovely mini cakes, just enough of everything. Again the evening meal was exceptional. It seems however busy they are the staff all look as if they are coping and the kitchen certainly do not let the food standard slip. We did not have breakfast included this time but we were still full from all we had eaten yesterday. Thank you to all the staff including those behind the scene who often get forgotten. Again an enjoyable stay.
Well what can I say!!! The room was set up amazingly and all the staff couldn't do enough to help, they were brilliant. The food was outstanding and everyone who attended said that they thoroughly enjoyed it. It was the perfect place to hold such special celebrations and couldn't have wished for anything better.
The main reason for the 4 stars is due to amazing service from Suzannah on the reception. She was truly amazing! She arranged a table for me in the restaurant when it was super busy, was super hospitable and ensured check-in and check-out were seamless. Just great. The room was standard but pretty much has everything you need. The big plasma tv was nice too. My only criticism would be is to properly clean the bathroom walls and fix the faulty toilet seat in room 27. Apart from that it was good value for money I'd say. No frills! Close the the centre which is most important!
Booked a single room for £45 via Expedia as I was coming to the area to visit a friend. The room was OK for a single room. There were tea making facilities, toiletries, hair dryer and a large TV. I was put in room 27 which was opposite the main door for that floor, so could hear doors banging every time someone left or arrived on that floor. I also didn't get any sleep due to the person in the next room snoring all night. I assume the walls are quite thin in this building. The bin lorries also came at 5am and as my room was situated towards the back, this was very loud. The small shower room was ok, if not dated like the rest of the room. The shower's pressure was very low and the toilet seat broken. There were also lemon or orange pips in my mug so this obviously hadn't been checked. The vanity mirror didn't have a cable so the light didn't work. Breakfast was good. There were a range of cereals, fruit, bread and a hot breakfast. Whilst checking out the staff member didn't even look at me or ask me how my stay was. The hotel was clean and it was OK for the price but I wouldn't stay again.
thought this would be an ideal place to stay when attending meetings in Norwich. Room was changed on request because of a large wedding plus company dinner taking place. Room was charged twice and only noticed when checking bank account. took several emails and phone calls to get a refund. Car parking very limited and tight access to entrance.
Stayed at the Oaklands hotel over two nights. First impressions were good friendly staff and a lovely evening meal. Our room was situated in the annex which is a short walk from the hotel This proved to be a wise choice as entertainment in the hotel can go on into the early hours and conversations we had with fellow guest on the Sunday mourning it was apparent that the noise traveled to the rooms situated above the hotel. The annex room. The room and even the entrance were not the cleanest I've encountered with layers of dust and plenty of spider webs.I understand that spiders produce webs quickly but dust at this level shows lack of attention. The room had a strange layout as all the plugs were situated opposite the bed and a extension lead feed under the carpet feed the two bedside lamps and bedside clock. The lining was ripped at the base of the bed. The on suit looked promising bright and clean until the shower was switched on this unfortunately had very little pressure if any at all. Breakfast this was fantastic on our first mourning with plenty of variety and the hot selection was piping hot unfortunately on our second morning this was not the case and at best the hot selection was lukewarm. On checking out I tried to let the receptionist know about the issue with the shower but I got the distinct impression that they couldn't careless. So to sum it up the staff in the restaurant were great. The hotel in my eyes is a two star at the best though if the management team were to focus on the hotel side of the business I.e.rooms it could easily get three stars.
Stayed for one night in a suite. Room was very nice with some good touches such as usb ports on the clock radio, kitchenette with filtered water tap, desk, underfloor heating and a separate bath and shower. We had dinner in the restaurant and it was nice, service and price were good. We would have stayed at the table longer but when the dj in the bar started we couldn't hear ourselves speak. The restaurant and bar are basically the same room but we were aware there would be a dj as a very obvious sign was in reception told us when we checked in so we have no complaints about that. There were a couple of parties going on, one in the bar and one in the marquee outside. Our only issue at dinner was staff and customers leaving the patio door open EVERY TIME they went through it leaving us in a draft. Breakfast was a good selection but the hot food was barely luke warm and there appeared to be only 2 young members of staff to seat people, clear and set tables and bring everyone's tea and coffee. They were very professional and working hard but clearly there were not enough staff for the number of customers. We had eaten our self serve breakfast by the time our drinks arrived. One other point, for any guests with mobility issues; the hotel is spread over several buildings one of which is 75m from the car park so it would be worth making the hotel aware when you book to ensure your room is near your car.
Hotel has lovely friendly staff, but this was my second stay at the hotel and second time I have had issues with the rooms. The rooms are well decorated and maintained but on both my stays the heating has been overpowering within the room and could not identify how to alter the temperature. Also, the water pressure of the showers was extremely poor and struggled to get water to cover you. Also, the shower temperature, even when turned fully up was no more than luke warm and felt as if you were having a cold shower
I am writing this review while I am on my 2nd and last night at this hotel. I am going insane with the noise from the disco going on downstairs! They take more care of the events, weddings etc, then the guests. My room is nice and big. But the window doesn't shut! There is no welcome pack in the room to tell me about breakfast or room service, or anything. This is my 2nd night of listening non stop to incredibly loud music and I really feel like going home, I can tolerate a lot of things but the Base sound is shaking the bed!
The food was just basic. It was dear.Lacking in full choice of veggie meals. Not very busy when we were there.Makes alarm bells ring. For all its hype its just very average meals. It is sa pity Gordon Ramsay wasn't in the area to give it a shake up.
We recently got married at The Oaklands Hotel in the Marquee suite. It was absolutely perfect. The food was amazing and was still hot when it reached our tables, (which is something some places find difficult). All the wedding team are very friendly and helped to make our day perfect. The wedding package was great value for money and a lot of the guests stayed in rooms which they also said was good value. The other hotel staff are also very friendly. Tony the Toastmaster was always on hand to make sure we were in the right place at the right time and to help us if we needed anything. We couldn't have done it without him. We were always looked after on each of our visits to discuss the plans for our wedding. I was a bit worried as there was another wedding on at the same time in the other suite but I can honestly say that we didn't see or hear anything/anyone from that wedding. I would 100% recommend this hotel as a wedding venue to anyone.
I spent 2 nights at The Oaklands and wasn't sure what to expect. It was cheap and wasn't too far from where I needed to be each day so it was booked. The stairs are covered in tartan carpet and the stairwell and halls do have a strong stake whiff about them. The room I had was small (which I booked - away for work and on my own so didn't need much) and clean with dual USB charge ports built into the clock/radio, meaning I didn't run the risk of forgetting my own mains adaptor. The bar is quite a nice setting, but for some reason I found the wi-fi kept dropping out whilst there (it was fine everywhere else, but it's needed to be reliable in the bar for those of us away from home). The bar food was OK and reasonably priced. Breakfast was also OK, but the sausages seemed really cheap - dry, crumbly and not very tasty. I found all of the staff to be warm and friendly, but you do find yourself asking for things more than once (mayo' for the chips / milk for the cereal) and that's when it's really quiet with hardly anyone else around - based on this I'd suspect they struggle when it's busy. Overall not particularly bad, not particularly good and the price it seems is on a par with the likes of Premier Inn (which in my opinion are superior and pretty consistent). I guess it's all down to what I understand of the Best Western business model - "randomness". Location wise it's not too far out from the city and it does have a mid-sized carpark for those that are driving. I'll keep looking for the ideal business-trip hotel in the area...
The Oaklands helped make this one of the best weekends of my life, I had 130 people plus some children. The venue was perfect as I had the marque (part of the hotel) and the joining room and the guests ranged from 6 months to 90. The disco and bar were in one room and the adjoining room was the marque room, so people could dance their hearts out, chat by the bar or sit and talk without having to shout over the music. I can't fault the staff, they were 100% perfect, there was also a Halloween Party and Wedding Reception in the hotel but we did not really know see or hear from the other rooms. The events staff are so professional and helpful. Lots of us stay over at the hotel for the Saturday night, rooms were great and very quiet, breakfast very enjoyable. A venue for all ages, would definately recommend
we stayed in this hotel about 4 months ago and we were no very impressed with some things at the hotel. However when I did review I was contacted by the hotel management with in 2 days. we talked for about 20 mins about our problems and while I felt wet should not have the problems that we had and I was so impressed with there honesty and what they were trying to do to improve things I said I would response with an up dated review but the trip advisor would not let me edit my review or re do it for 3 months. I would like to re affirm that 99 per cent of the staff are spot on and the food was very good it was more the barroom staff that let us down. and we will be going back to this hotel next time we visit family in Norfolk just give them ago
Today Wednesday 19th October we had a School Reunion at The Oaklands. As there were a number of us we decided to go for the carvery lunch. Unfortunately this was very Unsatisfactory. The broccoli you could not get your knife Into, some of the potatoes were the same, the cauliflower cheese was ice cold, probably just come out of the fridge and the gravy was thin. On complaining to a member of staff, who I have to say was very sorry for us, she said all she could offer us as compensation was tea or coffee or a glass of proseco. Even the coffee was not hot. Needless to say our next reunion will be somewhere else.
We recently attended a lunch at the hotel; clearly the Hotel struggles with car parking when there is a function on. The quality of our 3 course lunch was rather disappointing and service not good after getting off to a bad start by starters being served 30 minutes late and with very little in the way of an apology. We had to request additional roast potatoes & vegetables for our table of 10; also only 8 mints were on table to have with coffee. Not very professional.
We had lynch here to-day with about 80 + other people. We had 3 courses + coffee and wine. There was a choice of menu and I had Norfolk country soup, roast lamb and sticky toffee pudding. It was delicious. I notice there was a carvery next door which was well attended, it looked good with a good selection. My wife and I realy enjoyed the meal one of the best for a while. The service was a bit slow but this was made up by the nice young staff and the meals were hot and well presented.
My family and I often go to the restaurant here for a Sunday carvery because the price is very good and the food has been very nice. However the past two visits we have made here have been increasingly disappointing. The waitresses do not have a good attitude, we were made to feel as though we were in the way. The service was very slow between taking our order and being told we could go and get our food, two of us asked for gluten free gravy which did not arrive without a reminder and we had started eating before it appeared on the table from a waitress with no smile at all. Our last visit however was by the far the worst of the two. We arrived to be told they did not even have our booking and that we were not the first group that had happened to that day which was due to their new booking system- it clearly needs some adjustments. We were then told we could sit in the bar area on a very squashed table. Because we were then sitting out of sight of the main restaurant, the waitresses forget we were even there and we had to go and find someone more than once to ask to order; upon finding a waitress to take our dessert order, she told us she had forgotten we were there! When we did eventually get our carvery it was verging on cold and the Yorkshire puddings were rock solid. Whatever changes have been made to this restaurant recently have not been for the better. Furthermore we sent an email informing them of our recent disappointing visit to have no reply 5 days later. Incredibly disappointed that the service we experienced was so poor as well as the quality of food.
Visited this hotel for a 1 night stay. The only bad thing was that the toilet and bath wasn't cleaned. The drinking glasses were kept in the bathroom so I didn't feel like using them after seeing the dirt in there. It's the only thing that let them down. The staff were lovely and gave complimentary essentials and the food was of a high standard. The hotel is modern and the bed was really comfy. Better than average selection of hot drinks in the room. Rooms have massive TVs and the staff were kind enough to do some printing for me for free. Maybe they just missed my bathroom... doesn't seem like an unhygienic place. Plenty of off road parking.
This was our first time back for a long time, stopped by on the off chance late in the afternoon, have to say they were very busy with only one table available. Went for the carvery, the meat was the disappointment, pork was very dry, you still get a very good choice of veg.
Very varied lunch menu, including a carvery and light bites at very reasonable prices. Ample parking on the outskirts of the city. Friendly and efficient service. A group of friends went for lunch and stayed for afternoon tea in a very relaxed unhurried atmosphere.
Stayed at Oaklands for one night. We were warned on registering that there was a wedding and that the music would go on until 12.00 midnight.(they have a lot of wedding and other functions) We were offered a quiet room in an annex.(unfortunately this room was little more than a cupboard and had paper thin walls). We decided to remain with our original room as we were reassured than the noise "would not be too loud" Sadly the music was extremely loud and the noise as people left went on til past 1.00 a.m. A tip - always check when booking that the hotel does not have a function on!!! The hotel room itself was clean and quite acceptable Susanna on reception was extremely helpful and the staff in the dining room were friendly and efficient. We just wish we had checked functions before booking!
I rate this hotel as very average and would therefore not recommend it. The bedding was poor and the pillows were lumpy. Our room was on the second floor and there is no lift; there was no offer of help with baggage on arrival or departure. The drone of the kitchen extractor fan could be heard in our room when the windows were open (we had the window open as the weather was very warm). The corridors near our room were not vacuumed over a number of days, we could tell because there were dead wasps on the floor that had not been removed. With the exception of one member of staff in the restaurant during breakfast who was there on a couple of days during our stay, staff were not particularly helpful or attentive. I would say this hotel has seen better days and needs some investment.
We stayed here Saturday 24th September to celebrate our 24th wedding anniversary. It was the first time in 17 years away from our children. The hotel was easy to find. A warm and friendly welcome from reception. We were kept up to date on when we could Check in. Our room was lovely. We had predinner drinks in the bar. All bar staff were friendly. The highlight of our weekend was our waitress Holly in the restaurant. She greeted us with a warm friendly smile and sat us at our table. I wasn't too keen on the choices on the menu. Holly was apologetic and said if there was anything she could do to swap something she would try. She left us to think. I wanted to leave and go elsewhere but because of the amazing service we had received from holly we decided to stay. She came back and said she was glad. She took our order and we were telling her it was our anniversary and she very kindly gave us a bottle to help celebrate. Her customer service was impeccable. She came across very natural and knowledgeable. She made us feel special. We didn't feel that we were treated like everyone else, she treated us as individuals. If it wasn't for her we would have left. If you have any kind of award system for outstanding staff, we think that Holly deserves one. Thank you to all staff at the hotel and special thanks to the waitress with the mostess....
Excellent hotel,Room was clean and comfortable, situated in a area away from traffic noise. Ideal for a B and B short break, Very good value for money. Dining well catered for. Staff made you feel at home. Will definitely visit again.
Wow!!! We had our perfect wedding day at this hotel & we cannot rate it enough, the wedding co ordinator Katie & assistant manager Sasha were both amazing from start to finish to ensure everything ran smoothly. All the staff were helpful any minor issues were sorted ASAP & all our guests were very happy & had a fantastic time! The toastmaster was fantastic kept everything in line and we had no worries on the day at all. It honestly was our perfect wedding, wish we could do it all again as the day goes sooo quick!! But we would def recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a wedding venue, we had the marquee and it was stunning, Sharon the lady who sets the room up did a fantastic job exactly how we pictured it. The food even our guests commented how lovely it was & also the evening buffet. Thank you to all the amazing staff at the Oaklands it was indeed the best day of our lives one we will never forget!
Booked in for 1 night meeting clients for dinner, checking in I was told that I had been upgraded which was nice lovely suit it's the restaurant that needs looking into, ordered a bottle of wine 10 minutes later was told that they did not have it would we like something else this was not a problem when it was brought to the table it was just dumped on the table and waiter walked away, he did not attempt to open it or ask if we would like to try it, our order for food was taken and the same thing happened just put on table and they vanished no asking if we would like mustard, sauce or anything else, had to then try and get someone's attention which took another 5 minutes when it was brought again just put on table and vanished was strange that we were given a large dessert spoon to use with it, we asked for chunkier chips got skinny fries but because the way food was suddenly put on table we could not be bothered to say anything. We asked for a second bottle of wine this was brought to the table but had been opened and a glass taken out when we pointed this out the waitress said " oh I didn't notice really!!!!! She did bring another one. The staff are just so young with some trIning could be really good. The food was nice but nothing to shout about and menu was a bit boring. Would I go back really don't think so ..
I have been to this hotel a number of times, For meals, work dos we even got married there but they keep making mistakes last Christmas there was a deal for 6 or more eating you get a bottle of Prosecco we had 12 of us, well we got 2x bottle of brut! Even though they said we couldn't have it to start with as it was just a short time offer but on the advert had no time limit on the offer so ended up letting us have it then we were told we couldn't drink it with our meal in the restaurant had to have it in bar after, the pre ordered food kept coming out wrong! My friend and I went in for a drink between Christmas and new year 2x different bottles of bubbly they didn't have that was on the drinks menu! Went with friends for a drink and to go in the Christmas ski type area outside but it was shut as no electrics !! Now this year they have an afternoon tea with gary winter playing rat pack music we wanted to book £15 each for 4 adults and would bring 2 children with us for nannys birthday aged 5&8 that wouldn't be eating they said no they need to pay £7.50 each!! Unless they are under 12 months!! Even the assembly rooms don't charge if children aren't eating!! The maids head hotel too. They said it's because there's entertainment on,( like the children are interested in the rat pack!!!) I've just lost my father and thought this would be a lovely family gathering for my mother but sadly no. so think twice before booking at the Oaklands they seem to have too much going on and are missing the customer care and attention that's needed we won't be going back unless there are some changes
Dear Oaklands Hotel Just a note to say thank you the lovely afternoon we had yesterday for my Dads 70th Birthday in the Yare Suite. The room looked lovely, food was excellent and service very attentive with such welcoming staff. All our guests commented on how lovely the afternoon was. Many thanks Maxine
Having spent a very long day travelling then at a conference I just wanted to fall into bed ready for another full on day. My room was very comfortable and very clean. However , sleep was not to be had as there was a wedding reception happening and it felt like my bed was on the dance floor as it was vibrating so much and I could hear every word of the extremely loud music! I had not been informed of this when I telephoned to check that I could check in after 10pm but just informed that someone would be on the desk ! The breakfast was good and the staff friendly. However there was little interest or recognition of my distress when I told the reception of my reasons for lack of sleep!
What a truly disappointing time spent here today. Family meal booked for 9 adults and 3 children, and all I can really say is that the customer service was truly shambolic ! It took nearly an hour after being seated before being handed menus, and that was after having to repeatedly ask. Having finally ordered our meals, it then took about 20 minutes for someone to let us know that the soup of the day would not be what we had been told (cauliflower and cheese) but would now be tomatoe soup instead, two of our party declined this. Those having the carvery then helped themselves, then about another 20 minutes passed before the Sea bass and Steak dishes were brought out. One of the Sea bass dishes had to be returned as it was far to over cooked to be considered edible. This resulted in a further 10 minute wait whilst chef prepared a replacement meal. Another 20 minute wait before being asked if we would like to see the desert menu, followed by another 20 minute wait for deserts to arrive, again having to repeatedly ask of their whereabouts. Compensation was made by way of removing the the cost of the Steak meal from our bill. The food was ok but nothing special, and I am so disappointed by this whole experience, that the Christmas dinner we are meant to be attending with friends will have to be cancelled and somewhere else booked instead ! The staff were very inattentive with little or no interest in customer service, and a severe lack of communication ! I think better staff training and a decent manager might help to improve things, and if you have functions going on at the same time as trying to run a carvery it might be wise to ensure the staffing levels are appropriate to demand. Needless to say, the whole experience was very disappointing, and we will not be eating here again.
We recently spent a few nights here in one of the suites/lodges. It was huge, spotlessly clean and overlooking the pond and garden. The breakfast was enormous and excellent as was the other things we had from the menu. Staff were delightful.
I was allocated this hotel for 2 nights during mid week by my employer. First impressions were that it needs a thorough spring clean. Paintwork was shabby, the carpets on the stairs had not been vacuumed and the overall appearance was tired. A nice touch was the bowl of fruit at the top of the stairs for guests to help themselves. For evening meal, service from the very young staff was slow and lethargic. The barman was efficient and prompt with his service and the beer was good. I failed to get the bedroom alarm to work. The remote control for the television failed but was repaired next day. An air extractor was running just outside my window for all my waking hours. Insects were crawling all over the inside bathroom window cill. Breakfast was late in arriving and among the most lack lustre I have experienced for some time. Newspapers were available. The car park is large and close to reception at the rear. Having previously stayed at several Best Western hotels across the country, this to me was not what I had been expecting.
Stayed for a one night stop over whilst visiting relatives. It was a Friday night, and seemed to be the place to be for an otherwise subdued area! So a little noisy, but hardly a late night. Room was incredibly stuffy on arrival- I think maybe I was near the boiler, as no heating was actually on, and it wasn't anything an open window didn't cure. Nice room, well laid out. Best Western always seem a safe pair of hands for a stay (at least so far in my humble experience). Good breakfast buffet, very friendly staff, who kept a good line between jolly and too upbeat for the more hung-over breakfasteers
Free wifi ,free parking, Breakfast included in Stay Great friendly staff, very clean hotel really impressed Would Like to Say a very Special Thank you to Suzannah Lourenco who made my stay Fantastic. Well stay again if in area
I travel extensively usually staying in 2 or 3 different hotels each week and I have to say that I don't normally review as just too busy! This is a lovely hotel in a good location for business or pleasure - well priced as my room was clean and comfortable with a decent bathroom, a bigger tv than I have at home and free, fast wifi the staff are all very friendly and professional - the restaurant is well appointed with a nice, eclectic and small menu - I really don't like to see massive menus as I wonder about the provenance! The cheese board is gorgeous - actually got runny brie for a change and the stilton was perfection. Nice, fresh crispy celery and a good selection of crackers I will certainly stay here again when I'm in the area - ticked all the boxes for me
My sons wedding was here on 26th august 2016 couldn't have wished for a better venue. Staff were brilliant as was the food. The toastmaster was first class. Accommodation fab and buffet breakfast superb. Would recommend this hotel fir any occassion. Well done to all.
Me and my partner stayed at the Oaklands last weekend and spent £130 for one night in an "executive suite". It was our first trip away and after browsing the website and looking at the rooms we couldn't wait to stay in one. When we arrived, we were escorted to our room quickly and the staff left before giving us the wifi password, showing us how to switch the lights/electricity on, or giving any basic information you'd expect to know when staying in a hotel. We were disappointed that there was no bathtub (as advertised on the website), very basic TV (advert said "huge TV"... I don't think so) and rubbish still left on the outside balcony from the previous guests. The furniture was really poor and the wardrobe nearly came apart whenever I opened it. We were actually staying in a disabled room as there was a wet-room with a seated shower, which is fine, but we weren't told this prior to staying and were expecting a standard exec suite. Bed was comfy enough, tissues behind bedside table were left from previous guests also which was totally gross. Couldn't believe that we paid £130 for a room that didn't even have a hair dryer!! I did ask the lady behind reception for one and after waiting around for an hour, during which I was waiting to have a shower so we could check out, was eventually able to use it. Breakfast was okay. Overall, massively disappointed with our stay and definitely won't be using a Best Western again. We paid more than we normally would so we could have a few little extras, but it didn't even meet the basic expectations. It's a good job we're a laid back couple or it could've ruined our weekend away.
I write this review as I lay in room 17 of the Oaklands hotel. I took to writing this as It is impossible to sleep due to the extremely loud music that is literally vibrating the floor of the room. (The review is written via 3G as no wifi in rooms) I can't suitably express in a simple review how loud and poor the music is!!! The hotel and room are perfectly well equipped, and quite pleasant, until the DJs crank up the music in the bar and wedding venues. It is ridiculously loud. We specifically requested a quiet room as previous reviews had mentioned the noise and we are travelling with a 13 month old baby. We were promised this was one of the quietest rooms. Well if this is the best, then I would hate to hear the worse! Our son cried himself to sleep after 2 hours incessant base line pumping through the floor. We are told it will be ok as music stops at midnight! Simply put Do not stay here at weekends if you are not part of the wedding/party as it is ridiculous. This hotel is basically rooms above a nightclub.
This was a short break, for myself and my partner, we both had a great time. We couldn't fault the Oaklands, it was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. I would highly recommend this hotel. The food was also excellent
We booked a suite for 3 nights as it was our wedding week (wedding elsewhere) and neither of us live in Norwich anymore. I called in advance to say we would be checking in very late (midnight) advised this would not be an issue an could check in 24/7. We arrived at 1 am. The staff member checked us in and gave us a blue key. He then took us upstairs with all of our stuff only to find our room was in a separate block. Turns out he did not have the key to get through. We had to wait in reception until 2am. He then managed to get us through - this was not his fault as the day shift had not left any spare key cards for him to use. When I collected the key the next day all I received was a bleak and pathetic attempt at an apology. I subsequently had to to extend my stay by a day as we decided to stay in Norwich for one more day. If I did not have so much stuff with me I would have gone elsewhere. For me the following was also an issue: No WiFi code detailed in the room Unable to turn off the outdoor flood light which was very annoying through the gaps in curtains. Incredibly squeaky door and bed. I was in and out a lot so apologies to other guests who heard the door. One movement of the bed it squeaked. Suite was a good size. Advert says HUGE TV (def not the case). Bathrooms nice. Gave us somewhere to stay with external access and enough space. Shame about the experience checking in and lack of empathy from day staff. The gentlemen who helped us at 2am were brilliant as the issue was not their faults. The management/day staff should not have left the night porter with no access/keys to the suites.
Stayed for 1 night in a family room, having read some poor reviews I was apprehensive however we were not disappointed. Nice staff, clean hotel with nice bar/outdoor area. Food was reasonably priced for a family and all in all a really nice stay. The only reason I have knocked a point off was the bathroom was a little tired but that's being picky. Great English breakfast no shortage of choice and good quality. Will definitely stay again
We originally stayed at The Oaklands Hotel 10 years ago when we booked a Suite and 10 years ago this was superb. We thought it would be a nice treat to return 10 years on and book a Suite again, how wrong we were. The Suite we were allocated was not as shown on the website when booking but a tired version in need of updating. We found an old confetti box in the bedroom along with the previous occupiers CD receipt under the bed, the sofa was stained, backs of cupboards & wardrobe were broken, bath panel had blown from water ingress, socket broken etc. We complained and were allocated another Suite which was recently updated and given a free bottle of presseco for the inconvienience, upon arrival this looked a cleaner version of the original suite, but again not like the one shown on their website when booking. This was short lived though, the sofa had exactly the same stains as the first room, the extract fan in the bathroom hadn't seen a clean in months, we couldn't make a Tea or Coffee as the cups were disgusting but at least they provided a pedestal fan as the day was very hot.... This turned out to be broken as well but functioning. I sat on the sofa, looked between the seats and it was full of crumbs, dust etc. My wife decided to have a shower and the shower tray filled up with water rapidly, upon lifting the chrome waste cover it was found to be full of previous occupants hair stopping the water from draining, this had to be removed by us to finish the shower. Now for 1 night I thought I would put up with it although the rooms are tired and in need of updating and not as per the website But, there is no excuse for a dirty room, let alone 2. It's a shame because the Bar and Terrace is very nice and thought we would be booking again for another stay in September but this will be our last visit to this Hotel. I took various photos of the rooms but thought unfair to post on here as this may not reflect rooms in the hotel itself. But on the basis on cleanliness alone I would look elsewhere and not return. On balance I would like to point out the staff on Reception and in the Hotel were very polite and professional when we complained but something seriously needs to change with housekeeping and the overall cleanliness of the Suites.
We have our weekly BNI meeting at the Oaklands, and I use the facilities as a 'Tuesday Office' with free internet and amazing and accommodating Staff. Claire and Jo in particular are beyond helpful and the food especially with the new menu and chef are brilliant as I am Gluten intolerant, the Caesar salad is amazing and spot on every time.Nothing is ever too much trouble at this hotel, you always receive a warm welcome and with a fabulous outdoor space too its certainly worth visiting.
I had booked another hotel as a birthday treat for myself that I had previously stayed at, but changed my mind last minute and came across The Oaklands...when I saw what good value it was, I was sold....Simply Sunday, in a suite with a 2 course carvery, a bottle of wine and breakfast for £109!! I read the reviews afterwards but as i was only going for 1 night I decided to take my chances. I had booked the early check in for £20 but had to ring the hotel as the website didn't state what time that was. Someone promised me I would be called straight back and sure enough 1 minute later the phone rang (early check in is 12.30)...I was also advised to book the carvery as the restaurant would be busy on a Sunday which I did there and then. On arrival, the car park was very busy but we managed to find a space at the end somewhere. The receptionist booked us in and gave us a card with the restaurant times on it however unlike other hotels, we weren't supplied with a code for the free wifi which I had to return later to ask for and a very friendly member of staff helped me with my query. The receptionist also advised us there was a wedding going on there today so it may be a bit noisy later (there are signs attached to the reception desks saying it may be noisy at times as well). We were booked into the Hickling Suite, this is very spacious, on the ground floor, with a large patio/balcony area and a very large disabled toilet/shower room. There is no air conditioning and the room was a tad warm on arrival. Once we had opened the doors from the lounge and the bedroom onto the patio (we had to use the patio chairs to keep them open) and opened every window in the room this cooled down....later on a member of staff who had just shown a party to their suite came over and asked if our room was OK...I asked if they supplied fans at all and he said he would check with reception and get back to us...again within 5 minutes a pedestal fan was delivered to us. On arrival at the restaurant we were quickly shown to our table and told to help ourselves to the carvery...the chef was very friendly and obliging, the food was lovely. When it came to dessert we ordered 1 ice cream and 1 vanilla cheesecake....the waitress misheard and bought us one cheesecake and one ice cream EACH...at the end of the night we were given a bottle of pinot grigio to take back to our room. I haven't had the breakfast yet, but I'm glad I came to stay here....some of the reviews I agree with (car park small and busy, buildings need outside wood restaining)....although there is a wedding here, we can't hear a thing and it's past 9pm....would definitely stay here again.
Our second visit to this hotel last week and have to say that the staff, food and accommodation were again very good. It really means a lot to get help and smiles from everyone you deal with. Certainly going to visit again
We revisited after many years and found it much altered. We had a room in the Annex as we were told this was the only rooms with walk-in showers. There is nowhere in the room to hang clothes. No wardrobe or drawers, other than bed-side. Our biggest mistake was electing to have the carvery on a Sunday evening. Very tired food. Breakfasts good, except for the scrambled egg on second morning, which had burnt pieces. The staff were most helpful and efficient, particularly the lady on breakfasts. There appear to be NO fire instructions in the Annex and no information compendium. Not as comfortable as we remember, but no doubt good for functions. We cannot comment on rooms in the hotel itself, only the Annex.
What more can a hotel guest want? Warm welcome, quick check-in (after pest of a room key got sorted out), clean, spacious and superbly equipped room with everything one could want (teaspoon seemed to have gone missing, though!) and ultra-friendly and helpful staff. I didn't have dinner here but enjoyed some drinks in the pleasant bar and a great breakfast in the well-furnished restaurant where the croissants, served up by Emma and her colleagues, were lovely. Would DEFINITELY stay here again. Almost forgot - probably the best value-for-money hotel I've ever stayed in!
Traditional hotel with excellent room 92 chairs, desk, bedside lights etc). Bar and restaurant open out onto a terrace and lawns. Very friendly staff. Restaurant menu reasonably wide. Plenty of car parking. My only gripe was that we were lookin for the Best Western Plus Oaklands hotel and drove past the Oak hotel sign as there was no Best Western sign and the name was different! It was not until we went up the driveway and actually asked at reception that I was told that it had been a Best Western for 5 months - get the sings changed! We did enjoy our one niht stay and would stay again now we know where it is.
My first visit and I was met by the most friendly staff from the reception to the bar and the restaurant, the food was good hearty fare which was well presented, the terrace gave it a lovely evening sat enjoying the last of the sun. I will come back. Recommend this for a weekend break.
Nice bar area (especially the terrace) and the food was good. Staff were really friendly and were over constantly checking if everything was ok, this I quite like as I tend to drink quite fast so it's a perfect opportunity to grab more drinks.
The food and bar area was very nice was up to date and there was plenty of seats to sit about. unfortunately there was a quiz night going on and we sat in seats in the area of the quiz, we wasn't aware of this and when the person turned up who was running the quiz was very rude cause we was not joining in. This was a shame as the staff were very nice in the hotel. the hotel was nice and comfortable, beware the car park is small so finding a space can be very very difficult.
Stayed here on a Friday night special. Which has to be one of the best offers we have had in a very long time. Dinner bed and breakfast all included and on the Friday night we were there 2 41 on cocktails. The rooms are basic and in fact we refused the first room and got moved with no problem. Bathrooms are basic and tiles etc could do with some TLC. The meal and service was excellent, the atmosphere was humming as there was a disco on, which was very good. Would definitely recommend for value for money.
I stay in Norwich when work asks me to cover duties in area. I have MY all time fav hotel...The Brook....and Mercure is close second. But both were full.....I gave short list of other BW hotels in area I was willing to stay in. And work booked OAKLANDS seeing on TA how other guest say about music from functions I rang the hotel weekend before my stay......to ask for a quite room......when I stay in Norwich it is at end of LONG day...getting up 3am....so I really not need noise from parties. I reached hotel.....car park was very nearly full...saw two spaces..so used one. Walked to reception....to be greeted by Leanna......a man was standing near her...... I gave my name and BW card to check in.....asking how long OAKLANDS has been part of BW...as I was on BW site looking for hotels for MY leisure when the hotel got added to BW site. The man beside Leanna asked if I had stayed in other BW hotels in Norwich...... I said yes,and how BW is my brand of choice....he was interested in any feedback I might have,as they are still new to BW and learning, I said that I ALWAYS write feedback on BW site and here. He turned out to be Marcus...and is hotel owner. he looked at room I had been booked to have.....and being that he wants feedback...he looked with Leanna to see if other rooms would offer me a quitter stay.... He gave me an upgrade...to a suite. Marcus also showed me the restaurant....and how they have outdoor area. I said I just wanted a table in quite corner before I settled down with my own music etc. Marcus then offered me room service at no extra charge. I ordered meal....Leanna walked me over to ANT suite.....and I was impressed!!!!!!!!!! I had a brilliant room...lounge area...kitchen area at the back of lounge...microwave,worktop,fridge,sink etc. Large TV on wall.....Did not use...so no idea of channels offered. Balcony.....(wood looked in need of sanding and treating) bedroom with large bed......bathroom with both bath and separate shower......toilet etc etc. Large fan.... If you look at picture beside hotel name address at top of review..my room/suite was like this. I was very impressed...VERY IMPRESSED. my meal was brought over to me within around 15 minutes of ordering it. I had to pop to reception to ask for some milk......as none had been left....but I guess this suite had not been booked for use that night......so Leanna got me a small jug of milk. I wrote above that THE BROOK is my all time fav hotel....Mercure close second..... With the upgrade to suite Marcus gave me...it would be unfair to compare as not like for like with rooms. But I did not hear any music until I got into bed,as when I had my own on....no noise what so ever...... with window shut...the music from functions' going on was not a problem. I had breakfast the following morning......and Leanna was back on reception when I checked out...for another long day at work. OAKLANDS gave me I think the best stay in any hotel ANYWHERE...... Look forward to returning..... Thank You Marcus. Thank You Leanna.
Lovely bar, restaurant and terrace area. Staff are lovely - very welcoming and friendly. Cant do enough to help you. The food is excellent - well worth going back! The room was the only thing to let down my stay - tiny box room that needs TLC and refurbishment. Shower was a luke warm dribble.
Hubby and I stayed here for one night in July because of a family occasion nearby. Check-in was brilliant, as we had notified them that we would be late as our event started at 3 as did check-in Was not aware of lack of lift - those of limited leg power be aware - but the offer of help was quickly there. Have not seen this many power outlets in a room in a long while, so all our gadgets could charge overnight...Good to see usb charge points on the clock radio too Small hiccup at breakfast - when no-body was around at the restaurant to seat us, but a quick trip to reception and the lady came and chased the relevant person to life Breakfast had a good choice of hot food , at a nice quality - however quantity was an issue...bringing out 4 fried eggs when there is a queue of at least 6 people was not a good idea - neither was placing freshly cooked product onto of older product Continental breakfast choice could have been better - and as for the toaster....nuff said Check out was smooth and easy, and we will consider here again should need for accommodation arise. We had an economy room, perfectly good for a nights sleep - and TBH the bathroom was a real pleasant surprise. If its noisy, close the window, because the soundproofing was good, as was the fan :)
A friend and I had two rooms here on a weekend away. We arrived at the hotel at 1pm but was told that we couldn't check in until 3pm, this is pretty late compared to alot of places. This was fine though as we just threw the bags back in the car and went shopping. Two times we got a taxi the driver wouldnt come up the drive to the hotel as the drive is too narrow and tight (worth asking taxi firms to not send people carriers if you stay here). When we came back to check in we had to queue for a while as they only seem to have one person on reception at anyone time, this suprised me as they were very busy, they had not one but two weddings on the day we stayed. The weddings were both very noisy and raucous and went on until gone midnight. The rooms were compact but seemed quite clean and were comfortable, the two rooms were not very consistent as only one of us had a vanity mirror and one of us had a hair dryer ao there was plenty of sharing. One thing that really bugs me about hotels is when they dont have irons in the rooms. I called reception to ask for one who said they would bring one to the room. Half an hour later, taxi on the way and still no iron. When I called reception again it didnt ring anymore, i tried 3 times. I dont give up easily so wenr to reception to ask in person. The girl on reception was helpful and we travelled the hotel together searching various cupboards. We eventually found an iron but no board and was advised that "some people just iron on a towel on the floor"...... I made do and went out. The food at breakfast was lovely even though they were really busy. They do need to invest in a commercial/hotel toaster though as a 4 slice domestic toaster doesnt really cut it for such a large restaurant, most people didnt bother with toast. Most staff seemed unfriendly and I wasnt even asked how my room or stay was as I left, this seems a common theme when I have read other reviews. All in all I didnt pay alot for the room and it was comfy and clean....you get what you pay for I guess.
We booked this venue for our daughters wedding celebrations, the main event is next year but last Saturday we had a wedding family meal for 25. The service and food were exelent. Some of out party stayed at the hotel and were also very happy. I totally recommend this hotel and resturant. Fantastic hospitality and customer service. Looking forward to the celebrations at the venue next year.
had a carvery here and the food was really good, All fresh and the staff were very helpful. Good experience and value for money. We had no trouble getting a table and it was very clean, The bar prices were reasonable too. The restaurant looks out onto the terrace.
Absolutely amazing experience! The Oaklands made me feel comfortable and relaxed. The food was amazing and the hospitality of their staff, in particular Suzannah, was even better. Couldn't have asked for a better weekend away. Thank you!
We stayed in an economy room (room 11) for 1 night whilst attending an 80s theme night at the Oaklands. The room was small but fine for what we needed. There was a step in the bathroom so something to be aware of. It's also at the front of the hotel so quite noisy at the end of the night with people standing outside. The staff were very polite and helpful.
Well, where do we start. Myself and my girlfriend were invited to a wedding at Oaklands. We don't get the chance to go out very often these days as we work hard, so for this wedding we decided to rent a nice room and enjoy ourselves..... Well that was the plan at least..... From the start to the finish this place was pretty shambolic.... On arrival you have to pay for your room..... Which is unusual for me.. Maybe it's so you decided not to complain as you have already paid.... Well, your not allowed into your room until 3pm and being as the service for the wedding starts at 3pm this is pretty poor so my girlfriend decided to pay extra for early check in so she could get herself together and ready.... So after paying the £144 (with the wedding discount) plus the extra £25 to get in 2 hours earlier we made our way to one of the suite rooms some odd three letter name..... On entry too the room it was at a sweltering heat, with no Ac, no fan and widows that barely open.. Ok, well we will overlook that..... So in the living room you have a sink, a microwave and some cupboards... We thought ok we will bring a small vodka red bull for before the service we thought we would put them in the fridge to cool down ..... On opening the cupboards all we found was a nice black water mark... No fridge.... Too the large beds we told about in the rooms, these beds are very small. Ours just happened to have make up and hair on it and it was broken drooping down on one side............ Which was just an added bonus and helped add to the charm of the place.......... Now the room is advertised as having a sofa bed and considering how hot it was with no fan I thought it best not to cram onto a small bed, I will set the sofa bed up Instead....... Well I was in for another surprise this too was broken..... Well apart from the toilet seat not being fixed onto the toilet, the room cleaners only leaving half a loo roll but still managing to fold a triangle on the end... It was all in all one of the most shoddy, under cleaned, over priced, broken rooms I have ever stayed in...... On the plus side the staff were happy enough to refund us after 'new sheets' just wasn't going to be enough ....... I was disappointed in having to drive home at 1am, after paying that much money for one night you would expect a certain standard or even a standard... I'd have been happier in a travel lodge beside the m25......
stayed at the Oaklands last Saturday night ... we only live 10 miles away but lots of people are talking about their bar and terrace so thought we'd make a night of it! Had a good meal in the restaurant .. 2 courses were £16 and you got a free cocktail after your meal. We stayed in a classic double room which was newly decorated - modern, spacious and comfortable. The staff were friendly and welcoming - nothing seemed like to much trouble. We'll definitely be back when we can next get baby sitters!
A great place to stay. Our room was large and comfortable with both bath and shower. The grounds were inviting and picturesque. The bar was a little expensive but the atmosphere was great. All staff were great and there was nothing to much trouble. There was only one minor upset..during my speach their toastmaster interrupted before i had finished...all in all this is a great venue and i will visit again.
Positives: The size of the hotel and grounds. The outdoor seating area by the bar had a nice feel. The bar had a great atmosphere and all hotel staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast selection was good. Negatives: This only reflects staying in an annex room at the hotel - From the outside, looks very nice! Annex room was very small, especially for two people, I always felt squashed. The room had no wardrobes, they just had a 'do it yourself' wardrobe hoisted at the back of the room, in the way, and restricting movement. The walls were paper thin and we could clearly hear the occupants in the room next door. The room had clearly not been hoovered pre-arrival, there was bits of grass, leaves and a few stones, and other bits on the floor, and getting stuck to our socks..we found a hoover and hoovered it ourselves. Previous occupants' empty shower bottles still left in the shower. It's not what you expect paying £84 per night! Bathroom tiny but shower was good! We had a friend staying in the main hotel who had a good sized room which big bathroom and wardrobes, but by the time we'd noticed this it was time to check out!
Where can I start? Two night stay; the shower each morning was ice cold and feeble, the bed had a very busted mattress that sloped (poor night's sleep) and night-time reception staff that were not up to the job. I am not going back. I feel sorry for the pleasant and efficient restaurant staff, and the helpful morning Reception crew who dealt with my complaints when I checked out, but they are on the wrong team. This is not a nice place to stay.
Went here to look around and quoted for a wedding the lady we had was lovely and accommodating we went ahead with a provisional booking so we could make sure a registrar was available however never changed our mind so quick once left the restaurant! Stayed and had something to eat after our booking didn't even acknowledge we had a 3 year old with us as no child's menu was given. Waited about 40 minutes for our food from what was an empty restaurant. Had to call someone over to obtain the rest of our meals. Never had anyone come check on our food Half way through a meal which you would expect at a hotel. My partners beef was well over cooked and so was our side order of beef skewers made the server aware of this once she started clearing our table said she would speak to the chef.. Came back for my sons plate with no apology or acknowledgment of our comments and then just up and left with no offer of any dessert of coffee we had to call someone over to find out where to pay and still had to call over again for someone to bring us the bill which clearly we wanted. Again no apology for food or waiting time was extremely disappointed as the wedding marquee was perfect for what we wanted! But never mind we will book somewhere else! Will not be revisiting
Had my wedding here last Saturday and it was absolutely brilliant. The staff made sure that everything went smoothly and nothing was too much trouble. Food was superb and everything was sorted for us. The manager was very friendly and helpful along with all the other staff. Only thing I would say is the bridal suite bed had seen better days, was broken I suspect as was caved in the middle, however after an extremely long day I'd have slept on the floor!
I was arranging a 40th birthday surprise for my best friend... the oaklands were so accommodating and helpful on the evening of the 25th June we arrived early to decorate the area and all the tables were laid out beautifully with crisp white covers over the chairs etc it looked gorgeous.... it was very busy that night but the staff where so helpful it was a really nice evening and I enjoyed the food very much... I would go again in a heartbeat great service and decent food is not something you get everywhere nowadays
My sister and I decided to grab a quick lunch here on our way home from a funeral. We both wish that we hadn't bothered! After waiting 45 minutes for our food I went to enquire into the status of our order; the waitress advised after coming back from the kitchen that it was now coming, apparently there was a hold up due to a large table. I didn't want to be sarcastic and point out that they must have left some time ago, as the restaurant was completely empty ( we were sitting in the bar area) so I thanked her and went back to my seat to continue waiting patiently. Finally after another 25 minutes our food arrived! Yay! No apology or acknowledgment to the hold up or the fact our order was obviously missed and definitely was not on its way when we were advised it was. I don't mind if it was missed, these things happen! I do mind about being lied to though. My sisters chips were cold and her burger according to her, not that nice. I had lasagne which I can honestly say was the worst I have ever had, it was dry, over cooked (microwave I suspect) and flavourless. On the plus though, the garlic bread was lush. We were so disappointed with both the service and the food; I had expected such a nice looking place to have the food to match. I will never attempt to eat there again. What a waste of money and time!
Following another Eight hour ride we cycled into the car park of the Oaklands hotel to be met by a member of staff who welcomed us with a smile After a couple of well earned pints we were shown to our rooms which were well presented, with a king's size bed,the bathroom was well equipped with all the things you need. A couple more pints followed by a lovely meal in the restaurant was the perfect end to the day. I have to say that this hotel was by far best we stayed in during our biking adventure, the staff, the room, the food was as near perfect as you get.
Visited here for my Auntie's surprise birthday carvery. Food was really nice and there was a good selection of vegetables. The staff were all friendly, helpful and professional. Was lovely to sit outside on the decking in the sunshine after our meal! Will be going again!!
I came to stay here in July 2016. Part of my team work in Norwich, so I visit about once a month. This hotel is close to where we work, so I thought I would try it out. However it's at the bottom of the list of places I would go to again even though I am fairly unfussy about hotels, and used to staying in regional places rather than high end chains. I had a tiny sleeping space and I was sleeping in a single bed. The curtains in my room were very thin so a lot of light came through and I found it hard to sleep. It was also very noisy. The shower was difficult to use and very weak. breakfast was a lacklustre selection, cheap and overcooked. The staff were not helpful, saying it's just a normal breakfast and waving at the buffet. They brought coffee but forgot milk. Wouldn't stay again.
I stayed here for 3 nights on a business trip in June 16. Pros: My room was airy and spacious, and the staff were very helpful and pleasant. On the downside, the bar is very busy, so there is noise from cars and people in the car park until very late. Also, no blinds in the bedroom means being woken up at 5am as the sun comes up, as the curtains were thin. I wouldn't stay again unfortunately.
I stayed here for 1 night on business and was upgraded to a suite. This has a separate living space and bedroom. The furniture is starting to show signs of west and tear but the kitchenette was ok. There is also a large wall mounted flat screen TV and a comfortable sofa. You have to ask for an ironing board and iron and there was no hair dryer. In fact you hVe to ask for quite a few things you would normally expect to find as standard such as shoe shine. The room overlooked the pool does not offer much privacy on the ground floor as people can see directly into the room. The worst aspect was the room service. I ordered antipasti, steak and crumble. The meal was delivered by two staff members. After they had gone, I realised there was no starter and only a steak knife but no fork! I rang reception to tell them about the lack of a fork and was told it would be brought over. 12 minutes later no fork had arrived. I rang again and told them the fork had not arrived. By this time the meal was stone cold. It had to be replaced! I did receive a complimentary drink but this does not detract from the poor quality of service. Despite this, I would give the hotel another chance to see whether this was a one off.
A lovely reasonably priced hotel. Ticks all the boxes. Rooms clean with all amenities that you need. Good restaurant and bar. Lots of atmosphere. Staff very helpful and polite. When we were there a couple of weddings and a hen party was going on but to be honest by midnight there was very little noise.. So no problems sleeping.
The initial booking was made from a contact site, which was awful, call taken to a central line promised a return call which never came. I decided to contact the hotel directly the next day and spoke to reception (Susanna) who dealt efficiently and courteously. I was astonished when several days later the very same person rembered the booking and again apologised. This was consistent with the staff through the the hotel, polite and warm. I liked the room, the facilities and the surroundings, but the people made the difference. Will go again, if I return to Norwich I would consider going anywhere else.
Initially we struggled to park and it was a bit chaotic checking in - I think everyone decided to check in at the same time. There was a wedding on and a v loud disco ...we did worry about the hearing of those on the dance floor! Room 18 was just above the dance floor on the first floor -so if you want a quieter evening ask for a different room. The room itself was comfortable, well furnished and spacious but the cups had not been washed (though I always wash these anyway), the bath was badly chipped and the sink was dirty. We couldn't ring room service as the phone lines were down and the wifi didn't work. There is no lift so be prepared to pack lightly for carrying cases upstairs. However, the music did go off later in the night (which the room guide said it would) and reception was fantastic letting us have extra milk and tea bags and some soap (I managed to leave mine at home). The bed was soooooo comfy we didn't want to get up and breakfast was probably the best we have ever had ....all local produce and very tasty. Overall a nice stay and value for money - we would stay again but maybe in a different room.
I booked for one night 25/26 June to visit family.Hotel was very lively and sat and enjoyed a drink outside, then moved undercover when rain started. I was very pleased with my room as I was just expecting a budget room. It was spotless and had many extras I did not expect. The bed was mega comfortable with plenty of pillows and cushions. The hospitality was brimming with tea coffee and hot chocolate with scrumptious biscuits.I the spotless en suite there were all the toiletries you could need and another luxury a double toilet roll holder! The best thing was the tv on the wall which was white with a matching remote, another touch of luxury. I went down for something to eat and the oak bar was buzzing. The service was as quick as expected as the staff were run off their feet, ut were efficient and made time to ask if all was ok. It was. After my meal I was golng to join the revellers, but after a long day, went to my room and had a good nights sleep. Next morning, breakfast was set out in the dining room so you could help yourself and there was no shortage of choice. A good idea was to supply large glasses for the fruit juice as I do not drink tea or coffee and it saved keep going back for extra juice. As you do not have to check out till 11am I had time to go and have a rest before leaving. One of the best hotels I have stayed in. Top marks to staff for their efforts. Will definately stay again when in area.
My husband is disabled and the way we were treated was amazing. As soon as they saw he was on crutches they changed our room to a bigger one to help him. The ladies in reception were fantastic arranging help with our suitcases. We went into the bar and were met by a very nice barman who was an ex soldier and he was chatting away to us making us feel very welcome. The room was absolutely beautiful. Airy, spacious, clean and the bed was fabulous. We both slept like a log. We went into the restaurant at night and had a fabulous carvery. Breakfast too was lovely. Well cooked, warm and an excellent choice of hot and cold food. Cannot think of anything that could make this better.
Had a carvery tonight and do not go hungry! After refusing burnt dry beef got two tiny thin slices of equally burnt beef that did not make one slice. Roasties were undercooked and Yorkies still raw inside. Gravy tasted burnt. Service was very slow; after 30 mins gave up ordering a desert. Had to find waiter to get bill which was ring! Will not return
We were part of a wedding party. There was confusion over what time the wedding breakfast was to be served, I don't really know whose fault this was. We returned from registrars office at 3pm and the staff were still hoovering the function room, although the hotel receptionist seemed to think the food was being seven at 3! Not sure what the problem was but it was decided that we should have the speeches before the meal. Food was finally served at 5pm. The food was average and we had to ask for more potatoes and vegetables, one dish of each between 6 adults. The following morning breakfast service was terrible, with staff deliberately not catching your eye. We were not shown to a table, some people were having to clear tables. We had to find a member of staff to order coffee, but the cooked breakfast was good. Our room was fine but the families at the wedding with young children were in the "suites" and these were terrible by all accounts. My brother in law had to ask for the cigarette butts to be cleared from his balcony. On turning in after the evening celebrations same brother in law discover he was to be spending the night on a broken bed. Other brother in laws room was very dirty with cobwebs and hairs around the place. My mother in law had blood stains on her bedding! Hotel seemed very happy to give refunds but that is not what you want, you would good like good, clean facilities in the first place.
Stayed here on an overnight stay on route to visit my parents in Scotland. We booked a room in the annexe part of the hotel. Rooms were small but comfortable. Breakfast in the morning was delicious, varied and plentiful. All staff we encountered were efficient and polite. Our only real grumble was that the rooms in the annexe were too close together with the stairs to the 1st floor a bit creaky. Consequently everytime somebody entered the building or their room you could hear a lot. Also power in the shower was not brilliant and it was difficult to maintain a constant decent temperature on it. These were only minor things though and all in all it was an ideal overnight stay and we would reccommend if in the Norwich area.
A few work colleagues decided to treat ourselves and go out for lunch. As a party of 11 I don't believe anyone had a bag thing to say about the food, service was polite and the bar/lounge/patio area is lovely. Good value for money. Couple of grumbles although very minor, couldn't really work out why the food took the time it did to come out and with the patio doors fully open the smell of smoke on a couple of occasions was quite strong from other guests smoking, I must note however the staff did notice the smell themselves and did offer to close the doors. Would happily return here to eat and drink :)
Attended a wedding in April and the service and food was excellent. The room was comfy and clean and breakfast in the morning was amazing which everything you could possibly want. Staff all friendly and helpful. Would definitely stay again.
Attentive staff. Outstanding food. We too went on the patio afterwards; it was not littered with cigarette ends, as reported today. I fell asleep, through total relaxation. I'm booking a 100 handed event, as a result of a great experience today
We stayed here for just one night and from the moment we stepped into the hotel until we left, the staff were so attentive. The room was really comfortable and the food was fantastic. We couldn't fault this hotel in any way. Sasha was a gem and most helpful to every request. The waiting staff were great and nothing was too much trouble. This is a gem of a hotel and if we ever are in the area again, we will not hesitate to book again.
Came to Oaklands Hotel for the second night of our anniversary weekend. When me and my husband arrived we were unpleasantly suprise to be asked for payment upfront! Never experienced this before. The so called 'suite' was more like a holiday home.... shabby, dull, creaky, old. The decking area had cigarette butt's below and was slippery and mouldy. To be honest I could of cried. The noise above was awful and this was late afternoon. There was also a wedding which it felt like we were gate crashing. When I went back to complain I was offered another suite style room that had been 'refurbished ' why we had never been allocated this in the 1st place is beyond me!!!! Considering we had booked months in advance and had stated it was our anniversary. . Luckily for us the young girl who helped me did refund or money. I have no idea what the main part of the hotel is like but the suite type external accommodation is shocking and best avoided.
Hotel is being refurbished, but not a good enough excuse for not having room cleaned or bins emptied in the first three days of visit. Internet coverage very patchy and continually dropping out. Gets very busy and noisy when weddings or parties are happening, but staff helpful and food good
We went just for the Fawlty Towers evening. The players were very entertaining[ - that side of it was very enjoyable (when we could hear them) The room for the evening's entertainment was very large with a bar at one end ( limited soft drink choice and didn't take cards, cash only) and there was a different event going on outside and staff were going across our room to outside through the open doors (i.e. use of the room was not exclusive). This also meant that noise from outside was apparent. Our restaurant room had some large pillars which made it impossible to see what was going on with the entertainers if they were that side from our end and as the room held so many people the general noise level was too high to hear them unless they were at the very next table, even then it was difficult. This meant we could only really fully enjoy the entertainment when actually at our table. Our round table was so large and the general background noise so loud that we could only hear our friends if they were right next to us, not when they were on the other side of the table (unless we leaned across the table and cupped our ears) In other words the room was just too big and loud, especially for only two entertainers to address: even when 'Basil' was using the mic. we struggled to hear. To the food: it was tasty enough but ....the prawn cocktails on our table were very small: the first tables to be served were much larger than ours. (I checked, to see if they were all so stingy). The main course was tasty, the quantity adequate, not generous. I had Eton mess for dessert and though it was a good sized portion it was short on fruit and heavy on cream. I love Eton mess, but we all agreed that too much of it was cream To summarise: overall I enjoyed the evening but wouldn't go here again as the room was too large for just two entertainers to service and the food was nothing special.
Our evening began with a brilliant Fawlty Towers event which included an excellent 3 course meal. We were entertained throughout by Basil Fawlty lookalike and Manuel lookalike and they were both extremely good. My hubby and I then stayed in the Horning Suite for the night. An amazing location and excellent facilities. It didnt feel like we were only a "stones throw" from the main road or Norwich city centre. Would definitely love to return. The staff at the Hotel were all lovely, helpful and cheerful.Yes the music was loud coming from the marquis across the grounds, but it was a Wedding so was to be expected. It didnt stop us from sleeping.
We came for a birthday party and have been before. brilliant service & amazing food great value for your money. This is the second party we have booked and will defiantly be booking again thank you to all the staff who are really polite and helpful
We recently stayed at 'Oaklands' for the weekend. The hotel was alright, the rooms were clean and the double room we had was spacious. However, because this venue seems popular with weddings and other celebrations, it's really noisy outside until about midnight or even later. People shouting, taxis leaving engines on to wait for people etc. Really noisy at night which meant we slept poorly. This coupled with the uncomfortable pillows wasn't ideal. Breakfast was decent enough with a good selection of cooked foods. Wouldn't return, sorry...
My parents held their 60th wedding anniversary party here in the yare suite. I originally called the hotel to book a room and was quoted £90 bed and breakfast. I found the room for £66.60 on line as did my parents. No discount seemingly offered for guests attending a function. Yet I have friends getting married there and guests offered a room for £45. That said the room was clean comfortable and no skimping on the amount of tea/coffee etc in the room... much appreciated. Drinks at the bar were above what we pay in a pub. Breakfast was plentiful and very hot and lots of choices. The hotel would benefit from a lift as my parents were on the top floor and both have walking difficulties. Fresh fruit on the landings, help yourself... Nice touch
Stayed as we where going to a concert easy walk to football ground Was disappointed had to wait over a hour for room to be ready only to find a very tired and not overly clean .Was given a complimentary drink.Came home tired after a noisy stay disco till after 12 then woken at 615 with tables and chairs begin scraped while clearing up from the wedding. A great breakfast but lots of dirty tables.A big thanks to Tiffany on reception who is excellent and good at her job
My friends and I booked a table for 8 of us, for large parties, if you order 2 or 3 courses, the table gets a bottle of prosecco and a cocktail each. The deal is for after 7pm, but they kindly gave us the deal for us even though we were early. One of our friends drove and met us there, she said parking was awful, full car park with tiny spaces. We sat outside, the terrace is lovely. There was a lot going on, a wedding and getting ready for a hen night. We ordered some drinks, they were brought over with 4 glasses for the prosecco, but no bottle. We waited, and finally had to go and ask for it. We decided to have 2 courses, £16.00. It took about 45 minutes for the food, Im all for fresh cooking, but it was only burgers, fish and chips and a curry. When it did arrive, 2 meals came out first, then 5 minutes later the rest were brought out, with no cutlery. Finally we had all our meals, and we asked for tomato sauce and mayo. Half way through our meal, and no sign of the sauces, we asked a boy working if he could chase them up, off he went and never came back. He waitress then asked if everything was ok, so we asked for the sauces again, and finally got them when we had just about finished. These and the cutlery could have came out before the meal as we were waiting so long. We did receive a complementary bottle of prosecco, but really the service did not match the food. We ordered desserts, which also took a fair amount of time, and as they were placed in front of us, we were told there wasn't any mint choc chip ice cream for the sundae. More friends met us, and commented she thought we would be finished our meal, yes, so did we! We had a choice of 2 cocktails, and all ordered a strawberry daiquiri, which was very nice, and also some more drinks. Wait for it, they took ages, and time was getting on, some of the group needed to leave to get to a concert, so they popped to the bar to see if the drinks were ready, and if they weren't, to cancel the order. The bar person was very rude, and snapped he had only just got the order, even though we had already been waiting 10/15 minutes. They were ready, and my friend carried them to our table. The people that had to leave gulped theirs down, as their taxi was on the way. The rest of our party went to my friends car, which was tight getting out of the space. Overall I would return and give it another go, as the food was good, and it is a good deal. The service was friendly, apart from the rude bar person and disappearing waiter, but it just didn't match up to the food and atmosphere. I can't comment on the hotel as we only had a meal there.
We booked this hotel as we were in the area for a concert and what a pleasant surprise we had! So the rooms aren't the fanciest and the pool was closed but the staff were amazing throughout the place - front of house, housekeeping and in the fabulous restaurant and bar. Nothing was too much trouble and they were all polite and friendly - a credit to the owners!
Nice rooms and friendly staff but lacking in the small thing expected at a Hotel. Avoid times when a function with music, when I stayed in early may a Disco played louder than the TV in my room until midnight. Of the four nights we stayed only one gave true service in the Dining Room. Several Items on the menu were not available even when requested early in the evening. The small thing accepted as the norm in a Hotel were not attended to i.e. room not serviced even when staff informed. This is a Grade 2 listed building and has stairs to all bedrooms ( No Lift).
We stayed two nights at the Oakland mid week when the hotel was not busy and had a wonderful time. There was plenty of staff and all were helpful and friendly. The hotel is situated in a perfect location a couple of miles from the city centre in a lovely village next to the river. There are several nice quality restaurants/pubs within walking distance and a good bus service on the main road. The food in the hotel is of a high quality. Breakfast is buffet style with everything that you need and evening meals are carvery with a good menu of classics cooked to a high standard that doesn't break the bank. The room I had was quality standard, it was clean and comfortable with plenty of tea coffee and hot chocolate. Yes I would stay here again and I loved the Blue Moon beer
My husband, 2 young children & myself stayed in a suite for 2 nights and left feeling absolutely exhausted due to the lack of sleep we got as a result of noise from the weddings that were going on at the same time as our stay. We were put in a lodge close to the bar and events areas, even with the windows shut the noise levels for us were unacceptable. We were not warned when we checked in that these events were happening. When we got to our suite we were impressed with the size of the suite but the cleaning left a lot to be desired. There were dirty ashtrays on the balcony, the mugs were dirty, taps had chocolate on them, food remains in the sink, under the beds were filthy, brown marks (need I say more!) in the toilet. There was minimal toilet roll and we were only given 2 towels when there was four of us in the room. The following day our beds were made & the towels were changed (although we had to ask for more towels again as they only left enough for 2 people) but no other cleaning took place, bins were not emptied, toilet roll not refilled, floors not swept. We decided to eat in the restaurant on the first night, we were left waiting for 10 minutes before someone even came over to welcome us and show us to our table. Service was very slow (it took 2 1/2 hours in total) and we had to ask a number of times for our drinks. Breakfast was again organised chaos. We had to ask 3 times for our coffee and the buffet wasn't restocked very quickly. Many of the staff were unprofessional, moaning about each other within clear earshot of guests. A customer service course wouldn't go amiss!! This hotel could be fantastic if there was some attention to detail but we won't be back and definetly wouldn't recommend it for people staying young children due to the noise.
I stayed at Oaklands Hotel in a suite for five days in early May. My husband arrived on the second day and parked the hired car in the car park. The next morning the car had two long scratches on the bonnet : these had not been there when he picked it up as he had thoroughly checked the car. I reported this to the receptionist who commented that it had probably been done by a drunken wedding guest. She said that the CCTV of the car park would be reviewed. Three days later when checking out I raised this again and was told the person who would check the CCTV was absent but would look at it when he returned. The receptionist went on to say that the hotel would let me know the outcome. I heard nothing more so I e-mailed the hotel on 24 May. As of today (30 May) they have still not replied or even acknowledged my e-mail. I realise that the hotel does not have liability but think it is poor they have not followed up on what they said they would do and have failed to answer two verbal and one written complaints. Very poor customer service. The suite was OK although the cleaning could have been better. Can be noisy when events are being held.
Everything was fine with our wedding, until the evening when we discovered that the disco despite being arranged by the original wedding coordinator (who left in March) had been cancelled by the Hotel. We were told that the van had broken down so couldn't attend, as such we had no alternative but to use their in house DJ which was not what we had paid for. We did get a full refund the following morning but only after I asked. Having now sent 2 letter's to the Management without a reply I feel that I need to warn other bride's to check all details thoroughly at their final meeting. We did check and it was noted on the notes as booked but I should have checked myself. Details like this I would expect to be checked by the hotel and this did put a dampener on an otherwise brilliant day.
Upon arrival was kept waiting at reception while the 4 staff members finished their personal chats, not a good start. Stayed in a suite- Positives:- spacious rooms, bed and lounge settee very comfortable, super large tv. Negatives- Access to shower restricted by narrow sliding shower door ( I am average size), no fridge, filled ashtray left on balcony, directions to suites not clearly shown, Bar area and adjoining patio pleasant albeit bar prices high. We were there on what had been a sunny day and doors to the patio were wide open still at dinner causing the dining room to be draughty to the extent that the uncovered carvery food was cold. There is a lovely riverside chef & brewer pub on the opposite side of the road well worth a visit.
Had out wedding reception here so decided to book suite for us and meal for family mid week for our 25th wedding anniversary. I have to say the suites are fantastic and a midweek bargain at £89.00! Loads of room set in lovely grounds. And these are real suites, not like some hotels claiming this! You have double bedroom, large lounge area and beautiful bathroom and small balcony with table and chairs. We also booked a table for 5 in the restaurant which is lovely. The food was fantastic although it did take nearly an hour to arrive. There were also several people complaining about time and incorrect bills - I think they were short staffed, a shame. Breakfast was fantastic, but Oaklands - you need to get a faster toaster! They also have a fantastic decking area which in summer is gorgeous! Check out was a bit strange too, someone else had booked a meal to our room, but the receptionist could see that we had only stayed one night and there was already a meal booking to our room which was ours, but then we had ordered drinks at the end of the meal which we never got as it was a bit chaotic. I reported this to the bar and he said they would not be charged but they again were on the bill. Receptionist removed them but it would appear there is some confusion over tables/rooms and people took advantage of this!
We attended a family wedding here recently and it was great! Fantastic attention to detail, the setting is lovely, the terrace area is brilliant on a nice day and the gardens are well kept. We had the reception in one of the marquees and the room looked stunning. There were 100 guests sitting down to dine and I have to say the food was exceptional. The bar is a bit pricey but then it's sort of expected in these places - all in all a great day and no hesitation in recommending this venue!
on Arrival receptionist pleasent very helpful when booking. we Found our suite which was at back of,Hotel. Decor old, shower Dangerous in that floor,of shower has no grip again old fitting could gave, been cleaner no bottled water sink in room but no fridge odd for a suite Drinks at bar ridiculously over priced. breakfast was good but would have preferred a,choice Ie fish no toast or fresh fruit cooked, breakfast was good well cooked However listening to 3 lady staff chatting by maitre d stand discussing fire in Laundry room we REALLY should have fire training to evacuate people, was to say least disconcerting
I've stayed here before but forgot to post a review. I stayed here for 2 days on business. I was in a little annexe off the main hotel and the room was simply fantastic. Huge space, huge TV great big comfy lounging sofa and very warm and cosy. The bedroom very big too with lots of storage space. The bathroom was brilliant great big bath (I'm vertically challenged) so felt like I could have swam in it. And the shower was perfect. I had a balcony and sitting in the morning sun having coffee freshly brewed and provided was bliss. I could easily have stayed there longer. It was so peaceful and relaxing. I imagine in the summer it is really nice as there is an outdoor pool in the centre of the lodges. Breakfast was great and the lady remembered me from last time even though it was months ago.
Very comfortable, staff very helpful, rooms clean and all in all an enjoyable stay, would stay again may bank holiday weekend but its very popular and is fully booked.we will definitely be using this hotel again.
As we had visited this hotel before, and were on the mailing list, we received a Black Friday offer last November for an overnight stay with breakfast, 3 course carvery meal or meal allowance of £20, bottle Prosecco and afternoon tea. It was a wonderful deal and extremely good value. When we arrived, we found that a few months ago it had been bought by Best Western Plus. Our afternoon tea was taken, and boy, what a treat. Wonderful sandwiches of top quality, small and large cakes, and as much tea or coffee as you wanted. After a visit into the city, we checked in and had been upgraded to a lodge, another total surprise and a very welcome one. For our evening meal (with Prosecco) we chose off the menu and both our steaks were cooked exactly how we had asked the to be, fat or skinny chips. Creme brulee and cheeseboard completed our meal. Lovely room, and breakfast the next morning with choices of cooked buffet or continental, with everything - and more - that you could ask for. A really enjoyable visit, with helpful and friendly staff. Thank you
I would just like to say what a lovely stay we had Sunday (lazy )offer as a present ,room was the best one so far as have been before staff brilliant especially the lady on breakfast duty very friendly ,toaster not working helped straight away thanks to all staff for lovely stay
Having been taken for afternoon tea at the Oaklands, I am pleased to report the experience was very good, tea and coffee was available as much as we want and the food was lovely, sandwiches were varied and fresh and the cakes were excellent especially the chocolate gateaux. No complaints whatsoever and there was so much food that we had to request "Doggy Bag" to take some home. Pleased to say food wise this was the best afternoon tea we have experienced.
We stayed here for May Bank Holiday Sunday/Monday which had been a Xmas present of afternoon tea, evening meal & overnight stay with buffet breakfast . We stayed in room 18 which was very nice, it has been newly refurbished it also overlooks the garden . This room is over the function room , the noise didn't bother us but if you want quiet this room is not advised if there is a function. Afternoon tea was a selection of sandwiches, scones with jam /cream plus selection of cakes it was all absolutely delicious & as it was a nice day it was lovely to be able to sit outside on the terrace afterwards. There was a wedding & a function plus it was Sunday Funday = BBQ & prosecco with DJ so it was extremely busy the staff were rushed off their feet . Our evening meal was lovely although I had the carvery & the mashed potato was cold ! other than that we could not fault our meals . I do feel they are trying to do too many different things at the same time as I said previously there was a Wedding, Function, BBQ with DJ plus all the ordinary trade of the bar & restaurant the staff were just so busy so there was waiting at the bar for drinks & waiting for service when eating, other than these few niggles we thoroughly enjoyed our stay & wouldn't hesitate in staying again
We stayed for one night whilst attending a family gathering nearby. Our room was clean and tidy. Breakfast was good though they seemed rather short on staff and took their eye off the ball in keeping the buffet topped up. We've stayed here in the past and felt it had gone downhill a bit since then. Overall decent value and we would stay here again.
I came here for a meal as part of a hen party. The staff were very professional and made us feel welcome. The food was good and beautifully presented. The price was reasonable. 2 courses £16 and 3 courses £20. This included a free cocktail. I will definitely recommend this place to others.
Saw the oaks had been re vamped and decided to give their Sunday roast a try. Car park was rammed and took good 15 minutes to maneuvere round the abandoned cars to get a space. Finally we parked and went through to the restaurant. The staff took us to our table, but did not explain how the carvery worked. I had to go ask the waitress if we just went and helped ourselves or if they would come to the table as no one had given us any info. The waitress said she would come take our drink and carvery order from the table. To be honest waited so long I went to the bar myself and when I came back my mum told the waitress we wanted just carvery. We approached the carvery. No chef was there and the waitress had to go find him. Surely at such a busy time a chef should be in front of the meat at all times.. the carvery was amazing. Great roasties, lovely beef and great veg selection. Could not fault the meal at all. There was a group of guys near us which were getting really really noisy . Didn't particularly bother us but a lot of older guests eating and they didn't look to happy at their volume. We then waited about another half an hour before the waitress appeared again. She asked if we wanted the dessert menu. My son was up for a chocolate brownie. We waited and waited. After another twenty minutes we decided not to bother with dessert as clearly the staff were not interested in taking the order. When we went to pay the waitress offered to bring the bill over. We said we would rather just pay as could not endure the long wait for service at our table. Did not leave a tip as service was very slack. Surely each waitress must have a set amount of tables and you would think be attentive to them. Really feel your reasturant needs a manager to ensure the staff are giving their customers a great experience and great service. A great roast but let down badly by un attentive dis- interested staff. Keep this up and your clientele will be looking for other places to spend their money.
The Oakland's Hotel is set back off the road and is surrounded by large gardens so you will need to keep your eyes open to spot the sign. You drive up a driveway before the building is apparent. We arrived tired and late in the evening. The staff were friendly, helpful and understanding, even though they were busy at the time with wedding celebrations. Our room was pleasant, clean and appeared newly decorated. The bathroom was clean. We had a comfortable sleep and a lovely breakfast which was included in the price.
Had a deal meal sleep and wine for £74 worth the £ very well staffed nice room and nice food good portion sizes drinks are way over priced I think clean tidy double room although had 2 single beds pushed together which was uncomfortable and a bit cheeky
We went as a family of 4 to Oakland on Sunday for lunch , there was a large menu choice as well as a carvery bar to choose from, we opted for the carvery which was hot fresh and very tasty, no complaints at all, only bad point was we were so full we couldn't sample a dessert, so it looks like we will have to return for that pleasure, The staff were friendly chatty and polite as were the management I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Oakland's to friends and family and have already passed on details to a friend who is getting married next year as I think Oakland's would be an amazing wedding venue,Cant wait to return with the girls to try out your gin bar, a little gem keep up the excellent work.
Attended my son's wedding at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon, the hotel would not let us check in until after 3pm without paying another £20.00 despite the fact that there were not many rooms booked. The room we were given was outside the hotel in a house (annex) on a busy main road down a very steep hill some distance from the wedding reception. I had to carry my luggage down the hill to the room. (No help from the staff) The electronic pass would not let me into the room, so had to walk back up the hill to hotel reception, waited for 10 minutes at an empty reception before one of the hotel staff to realised I needed help. They then sent a receptionist to the room with my wife. They also could not get into the room, my wife then had to carry our luggage back up the hill to the main hotel (No help from the staff) where we were finally offered an upgraded room. Not a good memorable start to our sons wedding. The entire wedding party were made to walk through a very busy Sunday carvery restaurant to get to the room where the wedding was to take place (not good for the carvery diners and certainly not good for the wedding guests), despite the fact that it was a very sunny day and there was an alternative entrance available via the outside terrace. A pint of real ale and a large glass of white wine £12.80, definitely not value for money. However the upgraded room was very good and the breakfast was excellent.
Special thanks must go to viv for her excellent hosting skills and service Was at a 40th birthday party, food was excellent in taste and value for money, service excellent and a great atmosphere great for a party would highly recommend Once again thanks viv
Just got home from a very pleasant evening here celebrating a friends 60th birthday. I must say I was very impressed. Drinks did not seem to be a rip off price, not cheap but not so much that you restricted the number of visits to the bar. Toilets nice and clean, much like everywhere else that I saw. DJ played a nice selection of music. Overall a very nice evening out.
My brother had his 40th birthday here on Saturday night. There were 18 people. Everyone got their food at the same time, everyone got what they ordered and the food was amazing. We got 3 free bottles of Prosecco and a free gin cocktail each. The service was brilliant the staff were amazing very attentative. I will be going for my birthday in July. Brilliant venue, brilliant staff, brilliant food!!
Stay here more or less weekly to visit family in the area. I have now stayed in every type of bedroom they offer (economy, classic, annex and suite) and all have been a comfortable stay. the suite is definitely worth the upgrade! I can see on other reviews the comments about housekeeping and yes whilst there have been stays in past where it hasn't been 100% the rooms have never been Dirty! The staff are all Great, the food is lovely and price is more than fair! as things stand this is the only hotel I would stay in when I visit Norwich.
We stayed for a night in April 2016 after getting a deal online. Staff are friendly enough and helped with luggage. Room was nice for the money however if you had wanted an early night you would have had no chance as there was music blaring until midnight. Looked forward to breakfast in the morning but juice glasses were all smeared (took me 8 attempts to find a clean one), crockery was chipped and dirty. Cereal was in serving bowls that were uncovered so that put us off and staff filled up the juices with cheap carton juice. On the whole was disappointed, looked good but a let down. Won't be in a hurry to return.
I had a poor experience when staying here as a solo business traveller on a Monday night. I'm posting this review on Trip Advisor because I've had no response to my email below, sent twice last week. Hello, I didn't have a good night at Oaklands last night, so I'm emailing to provide feedback. When I arrived to check-in yesterday evening, the girl behind the desk ignored me, studiously, for a full minute as she filled in some forms - a simple "Hello, won't keep you a minute" would have been a more pleasant welcome. I wanted to get an early night, but over and above the shouting and laughing of guests between 11pm and 11.30pm as the bar shut (is it not possible to ask bar guests to respect residents as they leave), there was loud banging from downstairs until well after midnight - it sounded as though large items of furniture were being thrown from one room to another, which made it impossible to sleep. At 6am this morning, the clock radio alarm next to my bed went off - very loudly. Surely this should be turned off as a default? Immediately following this, a steady flow of delivery lorries arrived, with men shouting and slamming doors right underneath my window - so it was impossible to get back to sleep. (Moreover, and because of the noise, I had had to keep the windows shut all night, which made the room uncomfortably hot.) So I got up to have a shower - which was just above cold, no matter how long I ran the water, so instead I ran a bath - and when I sat down, noticed a long curly hair on the tile next to my head - I've got a photo of it if you want to see it yourselves. So I promptly left, pretty disgusted - and very tired today, with a very busy day ahead. I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Kind regards,
Nice hotel but nothing special. All the usual inside the room and a pretty standard breakfast provided in the morning. A little bit out of the city so a taxi ride is needed if drinking. Nice and clean and worth a look if you want a decent place to stay.
The first thing I would say is that every member of staff we spoke to were helpful and friendly. Things didn't start well as our room wasn't clean. It clearly hadn't been vacuumed, surfaces hadn't been polished, bed linen had old stains, crumbs found on tea tray and a general unclean feeling to the place. We initially saw housekeeping staff who vacuumed the room, but this didn't resolve the general unclean feeling of the room. Contacted reception who moved us to another room. After close inspection it was once again clear we were in an uncleaned room. The staff were open and honest that they were having issues with housekeeping, but it didn't really resolve the issues it was causing customers. Finally our third room change was to a suite which was much better, acceptable, but still not spotlessly clean. The room was well decorated with all the normal hotel facilities, but perhaps lacked the wow factor of one of the top rooms in the hotel. We had drinks before dinner in the bar which had a very fresh modern feel which I felt was a little out of keeping with the rest of the building. The extension and terrace has provided extra space, but as a result the garden has been cut in half. Service at dinner was great with a friendly and efficient waitress. The food was tasty and good value. After a good nights sleep in a comfy bed we went for breakfast. There was a good selection on offer, and again staff were friendly and efficient. Good quality sausages in the full English offering, scrambled egg looked a bit past its best, but I'm sure they would have made fresh if required. For the money paid through a deal, then we did get good value during our stay. The hotel has a very mixed use, trying to cater for weddings, events, entertainment evenings, parties and more, whilst perhaps overlooking the daily basics of providing fresh and clean rooms for customers. After having been a repeat customer over the past decade I would have to think seriously about returning.
Just back from staying at The Oaklands on a Black Friday deal which seemed a bargain. The stay started well, the afternoon tea was really good and cannot fault that. Was then shown to our room which seemed nice enough and clean. Went down to that bar in the afternoon as on Facebook it advertised Happy Hour from 5pm. This was also advertised on a leaflet in the bar. We asked the bar man what this included and he went off to check and said it was 2 for 1 cocktails which was great. Went to order another round and was told happy hour is not on Sunday's. Basically every time we went up we were told something different by each member of staff which was annoying and the start of a downward slope. Then went for dinner. In our package it said we got a 40 meal allowance so had looked on menu both online and in the room and chosen only to be told on arrival that it's only a set menu on a Sunday. When I questioned this as is wasn't mentioned either online or on the menu in the room the waitress shrugged her shoulders and said can I get you anything or not. Great customer service. The set menu only costed 15.95 for 3 courses too so impossible to get the £40.00 allowance we had paid for. Spoke to a manager to voice my concerns and was given a free bottle of prosecco which was nice of him but still felt as I didn't get a proper explanation. Then went to our room (number 21) which was like a sauna. Maybe because the window in the room wouldn't actually close at all so they put the heating up. Bed was comfy but due to heat could not sleep at all. Then had the delight of room service laughing and joking loudly outside our door at 7.30am. Would have mentioned this to reception if I had actually been asked if my stay was ok when I left but as I wasn't even asked decided to leave and just get out of there. On the whole the food was great even though I couldn't have what I wanted. The customer service on the other hand was awful and I feel this needs to be worked on. I would never stay there again but may be temped to go there for food as couldn't fault that at all.
Came here for my nans 85th birthday on a sat night and was awful the food was awful had a set menu the chips were overcooked and cold the coleslaw looked like it was about a month old. My hubby asked for plain chicken meal and got Cajun chicken which he doesn't like and same again with the chips and coleslaw. Told the manager to get the music turned down as didn't want to be listening to that while trying to talk to others in our party. Wouldn't rate this place at all.
We took advantage of the Black Friday deal that was offered to us on email as we were on their mailing list. The offer was £68 and for that you got a double room with breakfast, afternoon tea and a bottle of prosecco, you also got a £40 voucher for using in the restaurant for dinner. On arrival we were checked in very quickly so we made our way to the bar and had a drink before taking our luggage to our room. Once we had dropped our luggage off we went back down to the restaurant for our afternoon tea which was plentiful, loads of lovely sandwiches and a plateful of cakes. We decided to have our bottle of prosecco with our afternoon tea which was very nice. Later that day my wife fell ill so when it came to the time we were due to have our dinner I went down to let them know we wouldn't be able to make dinner, I was offered room service for myself which I decided to have. I ordered the Piri piri chicken and a vanilla cheesecake for desert and went back to my room, a few minutes later a knock at the door and I was greeted by two young girls who had bought my dinner up to my room along with a pint of Guinness! Breakfast the next morning was fantastic and as I have said before I believe it's the best breakfast I have ever had at a hotel, you help yourself to all of the usual English breakfast items along with cereals, juices and pastries. I will definitely be staying at this hotel again in the future and I hope that next time my wife doesn't fall ill so we can enjoy the 80's night that sounded great from our room!!
Invited out by my father to meet for a spot of lunch here on a nice Saturday afternoon. We were seated quickly by a friendly member of staff but that's when it started to disappoint, we were brought menu's but never asked for our drinks, the place was empty and took about 15 minutes before they came back to see if we had decided, still no ask for drinks. My father had the carvery and myself had the cornflake chicken, the food was presented well, and the carvery was warm so always a good start. The food was just, alright, presented well, but nothing special. The staff were friendly but very inattentive. Was alright, wouldn't return as i'd rather eat somewhere else, but not overly bad.
We came here in 2012 for my birthday and really liked it,so when my husband got an e mail about the Black Friday deal we booked straight away. Arrived a little early and had a quick drink in the bar while they checked our room was ready as they had had problems with the cleaners saying all the rooms were cleaned but, apparently, they hadn't been. Nice double room, but I will say the bath wasn't the cleanest as it still had hairs in it left by other guests! Yuk!! I found that pretty gross. The bed was really comfy. We went down to afternoon tea and got two plates, one full of sandwiches and the other full of cakes and a couple of scones. Unfortunately, the sandwiches were just egg, tuna&cucumber and then a few turkey&cranberry......my husband doesn't like egg or tuna so he had the few turkey ones and I had the egg and the tuna ones, which, after a while I found really boring. Most afternoon teas offer a few different fillings,or let you choose what you would like. We also had a bottle of Prosecco and, eventually after asking twice,a pot of tea. We decided to just relax in our room after that because we felt quite full and we had been into Norwich shopping that morning. Unfortunately I then started to feel poorly and it got worse until I was sick,I couldn't go down for our evening meal so my husband cancelled the table. They did, however, bring him his meal to our room so at least he didn't miss out. I felt cold so got a blanket out of the cupboard but it was covered in hairs! Yuk again!!!! We were in room 1 which is directly above the bar,and there was an 80s disco going on which we could hear really clearly over the tv,but it finished at around midnight and I had a good nights sleep. We had breakfast in the morning as I was feeling a bit better, and that's really nice....full English on offer plus cereals, fruit,Danish pastries etc. Such a shame I was ill though as it spoiled the stay. The staff are really friendly and helpful, and I felt very welcome.
Stayed for one night Room was very nice and clean Food looked nice and tasty Staff very nice, helpful The afternoon tea,I was surprised by how much we got for the money Did the black Friday deal great value for money will be returning in the near future
I stayed one night in the Oaklands Hotel in Norwich. It is just off a main through road, up a little lane and although the actual building is not pretty from the outside I was pleasantly surprised with the rooms. I had an economy double room which was certainly adequate for a single traveller. The bed was a double and the room was a bit on the snug side so I feel couples would be better booking a larger room. The bathroom was clean and toiletries were supplied. My room was on the 2nd floor and there is no lift so again bear this in mind if you struggle with stairs. There was a bowl of apples on each landing with instructions to 'Help yourself to fruit" which was a nice touch. It looks as though the hotel has had a refurb and certainly my room was certainly nice and the bathroom clean and bright. I ate in the hotel restaurant for dinner and breakfast and the dining room also looked fresh and welcoming. My issue came when the waitress choose a table to sit me at ... at the back of the dinning room well away from all the other guests - despite the fact that there were plenty of table in the body of the dinning room. As I have been travelling on my own for work for over 30 years this was extremely disappointing. I really thought that in 2016 hotel staff would be used to lone female travellers - as there is a lot of us. The waitress was actually going to sit me at the table with my back to the dinning room looking at a wall which I found totally unacceptable and moved the cutlery to the other side of the table to allow me to at least see my fellow dinners all be it they were a long way off. I didn't feel 'looked after' at dinner at all. Breakfast was slightly better where a different waitress told me to sit wherever I wanted - so I sat in the body of the resturaunt instead of the 'naughty corner'.
My brother and I each booked a single room and they were large enough. My brother and I are both pensioners and have some mobiility problems but the staff were more than willing to help in any way they could.
Location is close to river and within five minutes of city centre. No lift but easy stairs to first floor and staff ready to carry luggage if required. No single supplements and rooms varied from adequate to good. A water leak (builders or exceptional rain) meant a room change (upgrade!). Problem with WI-Fi was corrected promptly. Bar, Breakfast and Dinner were all good and the staff were without exception helpful. Their ever smiling faces were a delight. The manager Lawrence never stopped looking to see who need assistance (staff) or serving (customers). His staff would not find a better mentor who was leading by example. I'll be back.
We stayed in the lodges. We had 3 suits in one building. They were equipped with all amenities with double beds and double sofa beds in each so plenty space for a family of 4. Breakfast ample and food in the restaurant was delicious.the staff were brilliant, they made us feel welcome. The wedding organisation was spot on. Well done to all the staff
would just say don't bother, very disappointed at service! We were not looked after at all and after waiting for someone to take our dessert order for 20 minutes we paid and walked out! Also sent them and email week ago and they never had the courtesy to answer me! My advice don't go there when they are busy!
Was unsure what to expect but booked hotel for one night to visit friends. Nicely set back from main road with a fairly spacious car park. Staff were charming friendly and helpful. Room was clean with a few minor niggles but soon sorted. There is a disco which is detailed on the website so if you are looking for a quiet time be aware of that. That being said it did not disrupt our visit. Had a fairly good nights sleep. Breakfast was included in the price and was good. Overall was stay was comfortable and felt relaxed. Woke up to sunshine too after a rainy night not sure how the staff managed that. Would definitely choose to stay here again and would recommend.
After staying in the suite a number of times but never eating there my partner and I booked a £75 deal which inc 2 course meal, bottle of wine and upgraded standard room to suite. The suite was clean, smart and cosy as always but sadly we were very let down by the quality of food. We had garlic bread to start which was fine but the chicken main was tasteless and a poorly presented piece of chicken which looked like it had been bashed before serving, the chips were bland, the coleslaw was the best part of the dish. For dessert I had the lemon creme brûlée which was very heavy rather than being light and fluffy, my partner had the caramel profiteroles which were very nice. The staff at the hotel are always very welcoming and helpful it is just a shame about the food letting the hotel down.
We got married here so know the hotel. We had a black Friday deal which was £69 for afternoon tea, 2 course evening meal, bottle of prosecco and bed and breakfast. It was excellent value and a very enjoyable stay. The room was very large and had everything required - including a Jacuzzi bath which was very relaxing. The only issue we had was we were right over the main bar and the music was exceptionally loud and seemed to get even louder after 11p.m so much so that it felt like the room was pounding. The music did stop at around 12,15. We are aware that this is a venue that has many functions including weddings, parties etc so not unexpected for there to be some noise. Not somewhere to stay for a quiet relaxing evening !!! The afternoon tea was very good have never seen so much choice on the macaroons and mini cakes, The only thing that disappointed was that the bread on the finger sandwiches was dry in places as if they had been left out for sometime before serving. The evening meal was very good quality - I had a very nice salmon and prawn dish The hubby had a very nice looking steak with a madeira sauce which he was gorgeous. The desserts were very nice although we could not eat them all due to being so full. After eventually getting some very good sleep we went down to breakfast which was excellent an extensive range of cereals, fruit, breads for toasting and a hot buffet with something for everyone. Finally I must say the staff were a credit to the establishment. The waitress even put up with hubbies sense of humour !!!
This Hotel is very nice and the staff once we got there were very helpful and our suite was lovely with a partial view over the River Yare. They have just joined the Best Western group, and in all honesty are not quite up to scratch yet. We tried phoning the day before our arrival to confirm our booking and arrange to book in early, but we could not get through to the Hotel, instead we were being redirected to someone who had no idea about working on reception. We eventually got through and arranged the early check in. On arrival the next day the girl who came to reception did not know how to book us I and we had to wait for someone else to come over and book us in. To be fair they did say that they had only just started with BWH and were not used to the computer system yet. Our suite was really nice and spacious with a toaster, ice bucket and a fridge, except the fridge was behind the settee so we could not access it. The bedroom was well appointed and the bathroom had a bath and separate shower. Unfortunately I could not turn the taps in the bath on as I have bad Arthritis in my fingers and thumbs, but I did manage to have a shower. Breakfast was really nice, they had Soya milk, which I prefer to normal and they also has a small selection of Danish pastries, which were warm so I had 2 of those and some cereal instead of a cooked breakfast. Again the staff were very pleasant and helpful. As they are so new to BWH there is no signage outside and they do not have the normal information book about the TV and phone. Also, I could only get Wifi I. The Hotel itself, not in the suite which is not attached to the Hotel. We did notice there is an outdoor swimming pool which was covered over which could be quite nice in the summer, thigh it is not very big.
My son got married and had his reception here. The staff were brilliant and helped and advised throughout. The food and service could not be faulted. I totally recommend this venue to anybody looking for a wedding venue,
I was here on business allocated room 35 which was well appointed being 6-3" the shower was situated under the eaves and I was too tall to shower on the night of my stay there was a wedding reception my room on the second all I could here was boom boom boom into the early hours of Tuesday morning not good when you need your sleep to conduct your days business the hotel offer a very good selection of breakfast items fruits, juices, cold meats, cheeses, four types of bread preserves and the usual cooked items the downside for me I prefer my breakfast cooked to order not buffet style as all the items was only aired would I visit again probably not there's plenty of other good hotels in Norwich
My colleague booked us rooms at this hotel and it was a pleasant surprise to stay in a hotel with a bit of a difference; and in a good way. Much better than the standard hotel room, this one is full of character. Our rooms were in the lodges and were very spacious and comfortable. I found the staff very helpful and friendly and the price was attractive. Breakfast was a buffet and the food was varied and tasty. I will have no hesitation in staying here when I'm next in the area.
I booked a room on-line 4 days ahead of going. My car unexpectedly broke down on the day of travel so I could not complete the journey from Stoke on Trent. I phoned the hotel immediately (10.20 am) to explain my dilemma and asked if I could transfer the booking to the following week after my car had been repaired. I was told that wasn't possible and that the cancellation policy was 48 hours notice - I would have to pay. I e-mailed the hotel the following day to express my disappointment, and point out that it is often the case that a booking can be cancelled up until lunchtime on the day of the reservation or transferred; but as yet I've had no e-mail reply or phone call. Unfortunately I still have to go to Norwich to work, but I will definitely not be booking this hotel; and will definitely check the cancellation policy of anywhere that I do book.
We stayed at this hotel on a special lazy Sunday deal. I was really impressed. The rooms are spacious and modern and the bed was so comfortable. The food was excellent and the staff were really friendly. The surrounding area was nice as it actually sits right next to the Nirfolk Broads. This is definitely a place to go back to. It wasn't too far from Norwich town centre. There is a lot of history here.
