"Outstanding customer service (and great food too!)"

WeeScotties, Chirnside, United Kingdom 04/11/2019

Have to highlight how amazing the staff here are. When my father fell in the hotel they took care of his dog while he was taken to hospital. A member of staff finished her shift and drove to the hospital to pick Dad and my step mum up to take them back to the hotel - a huge help in distressing circumstances. All the staff rallied round to go the extra mile for Dad on their return. Also have to recommend the dining here - a brilliant menu with a range of full meals and light bites all beautifully presented and cooked to perfection.

"Good Stay"

User 01/11/2019

Good Stay, Good Staff and nice food. Internet is working good with no issues. The outside decor could be better but inside decor is good for the eyes. Some staff could be more friendly. Overall positive.

"Quite location in the centre of town"

Paul T, Godalming, United Kingdom 31/10/2019

Good, quiet location in the centre of Moffatt with spacious bar and conservatory restaurant. Plenty of complimentary on site parking and wi fi is provided. My single room was small, traditional rather than modern, but well decorated and clean and quite suitable for my 3 night stay. The en suite bathroom had obviously been recently updated. Large breakfast choices are available. No complaints and I would definitely stay here again if I was in the area. There is no lift, so guests with disability issues should specify a ground floor room.

"If given room 10 RUN."

Esther S, Liverpool, United Kingdom 06/10/2019

We were greeted quickly by a very friendly member of staff. When we first went into room 10 my impression was of a dowdy musty room and I have to say I was rather disappointed. We had booked many months ago and so I don't understand why we were given such a terrible room. We could hear the people in the next room using the toilet; very unpleasant as I'm sure it was for them when they heard us. Later when going to bed I noticed a large hole in the pillow case and an oily stain on the bed cover. When I bent down there was a terrible, dirty smell from behind the bed. The bathroom was poorly designed and when sitting on the toilet my knees were almost at the door. The restaurant has a menu outside stating which meals are gluten free. Unfortunately, the menus given do not have this information on them. I settled for steak with peppercorn sauce. Due to a problem with the order my steak arrived without the sauce. This had to be heated while I started my meal and arrived around 5 minutes later. However, it was a wonderful sauce and we were not charged for it. There was only ice cream on offer as a gluten free dessert and it arrived with a biscuit on it! It had to be sent back and redone. My husband had almost finished his dessert when mine arrived. At breakfast there is nothing gluten free for anyone not wanting a cooked breakfast except toast. Others have a choice of pastries, cereals, and breads. I opted for bacon and poached egg. We were third in the dining room but waited over 25 minutes for this to arrive - cold. This hotel needs a serious upgrade and rethink of the menus for breakfast and dinner. Also it doesn't look good to arrive and see staff out at the front smoking! I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

"Pleasant Hotel"

473philk, Warrington, United Kingdom 22/09/2019

Stayed at the hotel after playing golf at Lochmaben as a stop off on the way to Edinburgh. Rooms are clean, warm and spacious enough with lovely high ceilings. We had breakfast at the hotel which was cooked to order and set me up well for the day. Price is good when booked on line with BW and staff very helpful.

Stacey M, General Manager at Best Western Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Dear 473philk, Thank you for your lovely review. I am glad you enjoyed your stay at Moffat House Hotel. We hope to see you back at the hotel in the near future. Kind Regards Ailsa Barr General Manager

"Saturday lunch"

User 21/09/2019

I have been a few times but it has been a couple of months since my last visit as the food had not been very good. Pleased to see the difference a new chef judging by the food my only complaint would be the tall thin waitress at lunch she has the personality of a brick and could do with getting a uniform that fits not very tidy looking especially when the others look the part but that's me maybe being too fussy as you would expect the front of house to look good and it was only 1 o'clock at the time and it wasn't very busy. But like I said food was great and I will return.

Stacey M, General Manager at Best Western Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Paparazzicall, Thank you for your review and I am glad to hear to enjoyed your Saturday lunch at the Hotel. With regards to your complaint towards one of my staff members, I can only say that this is unfair to publish this on Tripadvisor, we all have our off days at work and I have a duty of care towards my staff to protect them so for this to be published by yourself I can only ask you for next time to please watch what you say as this has been very hurtful towards my staff member. we hope to see you at the hotel again in the near future. "Friendly place to stay"

seanm95, Sheffield, United Kingdom 20/09/2019

We had a one night stop over on speck and we were pleasantly surprised. The receptionist, Marian, was superb, so cheerful and welcoming, a real delight. All the staff were pleasant and cheerful. Our premium room was spacious and the king sized bed was very comfortable. Plenty of tea and coffee provided. More lighting in the room would be good but other than that it was fine. Plenty of car parking on hotel frontage and 1 minute walk into Moffat square. A great offer on for dinner - 2 x 10 oz ribeye steaks and bottle of house wine for £35 - ideal for my wife and I and it was delicious.

Stacey M, General Manager at Best Western Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review

"A Great Hotel"

robin l, UK 12/09/2019

We love this Best western Hotel, situated on Moffat High Street. It was built in 1762, as the lovely little museum informed us, it is very comfortable. Our bedroom had a lovely kingsize bed, with a nice en-suite. There is plenty of space in the hotel, which was originally a large country house, and they had a large wood fire burning in the bar as it was quite wet and chilly when we were there. The staff are all very friendly, and professional. Although the weather was not very good, there are a number of pleasant walks around Moffat that we managed to do.

"Good value"

Magtravel2, Liverpool, United Kingdom 08/09/2019

This was a 1 night stop on our way further north. We booked a premium double room on the hotels website to get the best price. The room was large and had a wonderfully comfortable extra large double bed. The room could be improved with more modern and lighter coloured furniture. The bathroom was ok but really in need of updating. We had the continental breakfast at £6.95 and thoroughly enjoyed it .

"Ideal Stop Over"

TheLaird001, Douglas, United Kingdom 03/09/2019

We had been travelling for a week on Isle of Arran and we wanted to spend some time in the Borders prior to going back down south to Cheshire. We checked the hotels in the area (an area I know very well from my childhood) and the Moffat House Hotel offered a good deal so we checked in. However, beware as the breakfast is not included in the room rate and, in my opinion, is rather expensive. The room we were allocated was very good and comfortable and very clean. We chose not to eat at the hotel so cannot review the quality of the food but can say that the staff were very friendly and welcoming and would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area.

User 25/08/2019

Honestly the worst hotel we have stayed in on a two week trip of Scotland. Room number 10 was musty and felt dirty. The walls are so thin it felt like we were sharing a bed with a very sick Neighbour who coughed and went to the loo all night. We heard everything. Terrible.

Stacey M, General Manager at Best Western Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Kimr384, I can only apologise that you feel this way about our hotel. I will pass your comments onto Housekeeping as the rooms are usually very clean and done to a high standard. With regards to the sound proofing in the rooms unfortunately due to the hotel being a listened building it is hard for us to sound proof the building with all the restriction we have to abide by this is something we are looking in to do though. I am sorry you had such a bad experience at the hotel. Kind Regards Ailsa Barr General Manager

maryhillmagyar, Glasgow, United Kingdom 18/08/2019

Can't fault anything about this hotel, parking at the door, right on the High street. Easy check in, room in good condition, choice of bar/ restaurant, food was quality and chef was flexible to make my meals gluten free. Without doubt the staff care about the hotel and their customers, every member of staff I met was friendly, chatty and easy going.

"Good stop over "

CarolIn21, Manchester, United Kingdom 07/08/2019

This is a good place to stop if travelling to/from Scotland. Friendly welcome from the staff, food was nicely cooked and served in the pleasant conservatory. The room we had overlooked the main road, but was far enough away to avoid any road noise. The room and bathroom did look rather shabby though, with painting and filling having been inexpertly done and areas of mould around the shower. Some cobwebs too. Would stay again, knowing what to expect, but would probably not recommend to friends.

"Tired hotel in need of updating"

carrie47267, Cheltenham, United Kingdom 31/07/2019

Hotel in convenient town location, and plenty of parking, but in need of serious updating. Frayed edge to stair carpet and poor decoration does not create a good first impression. Reception staff, however, very helpful and charming. Rooms also look tired although bed very comfortable. Inadequate window covering in bathroom a bit unnerving. Cannot comment on food and restaurant as we chose to eat out in the town.

"Quick lunch stop."

User 24/07/2019

We have just stopped off with friends for a super speedy lunch due to time constraints on our part. We had been to visit the waterfall on the way home from a short scottish break and didn't want our holiday to end. We noticed the family and pet friendly sign whilst searching for a late lunch in Moffat. Everything was accomodated, full menu still being served and our order went through in record time at my request. Despite the fast service the food was excellent. The outdoor area was perfect for the children to play and for us to enjoy the last 40 mins of our holiday. Thank you very much :-)

"Yet another stay at Moffat House Hotel "

holiday116, Wakefield, United Kingdom 19/07/2019

Lovely warm welcome and big hugs from Marianne when we arrived at Reception . Marianne is now Deputy Manager, well deserved promotion. Met Ailsa when we went in for dinner. Another lovely lady who is now manager. Yet another well deserved promotion. Ailsa always makes us feel so welcome and once again, we had our favourite room. Thank you ladies. Breakfast choice is excellent and the restaurant has a favourite dish, the steak and ale pie which is actually beautiful tender, lean beef topped with a melt in the mouth puff pastry lid . ( no other pastry on the sides ) just the way we like it. This is served with veg which are cooked perfectly and golden chips. We visit this hotel several times a year and always for at least a three night stay. Next visit, September and always look forward to it.

"Brilliant hotel"

castel123, Scottish Borders, United Kingdom 18/07/2019

We needed a ground floor room and were asked if the anex would be ok. Im so glad we said yes. Large room, large bed and large bathroom. Perfectly clean , well set out tea coffee making facility, shower over bath. This room is fully adapted for disabled use. (Room 19) The staff are incredible nothing but nothing was to much trouble friendly, smiling and helpful. We rang and asked for two extra pillows and if possible a fan they were brought within 3 minutes by a young women called Sarah. Who had a brilliant smile everytime we saw her, she even ran to the shop to get a paper for me one day. All the staff deserve a mention that includes the cleaners they keep the rooms and the hotel spotlessly clean. The food is well cooked and presented and tastes delicious. The Breakfast is hot tastey and the proportions are exceptionally good. We can recommend, the Steak and ale pie, the carvery, the seafood cocktail, steak and the beautiful black cherry chocolate gateaux, that is the very best I've ever had but be warned it's a very large piece of gateaux. In fact our whole visit to this hotel was perfect. . The lounge and reading room are very comfortable, the view of the fantastic garden is breathtaking from the lounge and the restaurant.

"Overnight stay"

mlangt322492, Chorley, United Kingdom 12/07/2019

Speedy check in on arrival. Room was small but had everything you would need and as everywhere in the hotel was very clean. Ate in the hotel for dinner which was good value for money. Breakfast in the morning was also good. All the staff were very friendly. We had our dog with us as did a number of other guests. We were able to take him into the bar for our meals and at breakfast he was given a sausage treat.

"Lovely break"

A9065MIstevee, Leicester, United Kingdom 09/07/2019

One if not the most warming of welcomes set the three nights up. Excellent food, very clean and comfortable room with all facilities, good sized bathroom spotlessly clean All in all great value for money from staff who really cared and could not do enough for you . Many thanks and see you again

"Worst meal and service"

User 07/07/2019

Visited today and was initially disappointed on the 40 minutes waiting on meal. When I questioned waiter he said sorry we have a large function in. When I returned to the table my roast beef was just a chunk of fat. Looked for a member of staff and there were none. Everyone in my party wasn't happy with their meals but still no staff. Eventually a member of staff came into restaurant started to clear glasses which I then found a so called duty manager and complained only to be told and I quote "if that's how you feel everyone is entitled to their opinion. She then left building and we still hadn't had table cleared. I was then given the bill which had charged me full price for disgusting food and two lots of flat cola. Disgusted with food but extremely disgusted with service or should I say non-existent or cheeky service. One word to describe awful won't be back

Stacey M, Manager at Best Western Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Kirsty, I am sorry this is the experience you had at Moffat House Hotel, I can only apologise for this and this is very out of character of my staff. I will be looking into this situation and why you did not receive our usual 5* customer service. I will also pass onto the Chefs with regards to the beef so they are aware of how fatty it was. Again I apologise and this situation should have been sorted at the time so you did not leave not wanting to come back. I hope you do return to the hotel. Kind regards Ailsa Barr General Manager

"Good hotel in a good location"

Tez1960, Thornton Cleveleys, United Kingdom 06/07/2019

This is a very good hotel ideally situated in the centre of Moffat. The staff are friendly and welcoming. I asked for a room on the ground floor because my partner has mobility problems. The room was OK for what for our needs, but not suitable for those who are totally wheelchair dependant as there are one or two steps and doors to negotiate along the corridor. The shower was over the bath so not suitable for my partner, but as we were only staying a few days this was not an issue. I was forewarned of these facilities when booking. What is an issue however the pebbled/shingled fore court/drive way. This IS a problem for wheelchair users and quite hazardous. I'm surprised that a proper paved entrance has not been made to accommodate disabled guests. On the whole though a very enjoyable stay.

"Overnight stop on motorbike tour"

Peter W, Banbury, United Kingdom 06/07/2019

Nice building with good bar and restaurant. I was supposed to be in better of the 2 rooms booked (single on second floor)but suspect other was better.Small out of date style room, shower room only the width of shower tray a long enough to have small sink and toilet & needed sliding door due to lack of space. This room was poor value at £77.50. On the positive side, staff very friendly and food very good

"OK for 1 night, wouldn't stay longer"

Julie P, United Kingdom 28/06/2019

Located in an old house with a beautiful staircase, this hotel is in the centre of Moffat. There is a small car park outside the front of the hotel but this could soon get full up. There's no lift if you are on the higher floors. The staff were very friendly and welcoming but at times the service was slow. I had to ring the bell 3 times before someone came to reception and I could hear people talking. We also had to ask someone to take our breakfast order. The room was large with plenty of drinks and milks but cold so we had to turn the heating on. The bed was also uncomfortable. There was a good selection of food in the restaurant and the food was good as was the breakfast choice, especially the French toast. You can sit in the bar or the restaurant to eat. There was supposed to be free Wifi but I couldn't get it to work - I think I'd been given the wrong code as I noticed the dispenser where they kept the slips had at least 3 different codes in it when I checked out.

"Some Good, Some Not So Good"

johnboyPeterborough, Peterborough 26/06/2019

This hotel is located centrally in the beautiful small town of Moffat. The hotel, which has really nice gardens, is only a couple of minutes walk from the shops, restaurants, cafes and bars on the two main streets. When we checked in there was no mention of wifi and when we got upstairs to our room we saw in the hotel guide that we had to walk back down to Reception to get a slip of paper with the code on it. Not great customer service as we should have been told this when we checked in. There was plenty of parking in the hotel car park Our bedroom was OK but pretty tired and in need of decoration. The bathroom was good and there was a decent TV and hairdryer plus tea and coffee and biscuits The bed was not very comfortable and, although it was a double, it must have been the smallest available under that description We had a drink in the bar in the evening and there was a good choice of drinks available With a bit better customer service and a lick of paint it could have been so much better

"Great Hotel but the shower was poor"

Discover52417245688, Aberdeen, United Kingdom 22/06/2019

We found that the room was very good. Unfortunately, the shower was awful - we could not get it to stay at a sensible temperature, it would go from OK, to scalding hot to freezing cold! Food was good. Some of the guests complained about my son and his friend who were playing music into the evening. I think that most of the clientele were older couples.

"39th Anniversary night"

JEMIMA-D, Renfrewshire 22/06/2019

Had a lovely stay. Hotel is in a great location with ample parking. Really nice quiet garden at rear to sit and have a drink. We ate dinner in hotel. I had the cod en papillote and my husband had the 10oz ribeye, both were excellent quality produce cooked well and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Our room though slightly dated was spotlessly clean with an extremely comfortable bed. We decided to eat breakfast in the hotel and there was a great choice of both continental and cooked . All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again when visiting the area

"Excellent. Nice hotel, friendly helpful staff"

AnitaP111, United Kingdom 19/06/2019

Stayed twice recently: for one night on the way up to NWScotland and for one night on the return journey. Both visits were very good: a cheerful welcome when we booked in, a comfortable and spacious room, and friendly, helpful staff in the restaurant/bar/reception. We booked B&B direct from the hotel website, then later emailed restaurant reservations, all was processed efficiently. It is a lovely building, and the grounds were great for strolling and sitting in. Our room(s) were in the side buildings by the front of the hotel. Nice quiet rooms, very clean and well-maintained with pleasant decor. The bed was very comfortable (and big enough for my very tall husband), and the whole area was spacious, with wall TV and coffee-making facilities as you would expect. The bathrooms were large. Wifi was reliable. The restaurant overlooks the gardens. Breakfast was generous and good, with a selection of cooked-to-order items. The steak night in the evening was so good we had it twice, although the menu offered some attractive choices. The staff were very attentive. This hotel is within 2 mins walk of the town, which had some attractive shops and pubs, and was interesting to explore. It seemed a very quiet and pleasant small town.

"Nice Room, Friendly Staff"

"Good food but order was not correct"

soutar, Melrose, United Kingdom 08/06/2019

We were having a family get together for lunch and I had pre-ordered. One of the meals was incorrect and when I pointed this out, I was told I was wrong. I went through the list and my order was definitely correct. When asked later if anything was wrong I said again that the order wasn't correct, my friend ended up having to eat something she hadn't wanted or wait for 15 minutes. She ended up leaving the risotto as it wasn't to her taste. The room was cold as it was in a conservatory, no heating was on and it was lashing rain outside which added to the chill. When the bill came it was incorrect, they had charged for a meal that had been cancelled and for the meal which didn't come. I asked them to take off the cancelled meal but by that point was not going to argue about the incorrect meal. The food was very good on the whole but was rather spoilt by them getting the order wrong and not offering any recompense – it was made clear it was all my fault. To be honest, I won't be back after being treated like that.

"Room was not the one we booked"

a w, cumbria 29/05/2019

Arrived at the hotel and checked in. Receptionist complained her hands were cold because she had been 'sitting still for so long'! Went up to room having booked a family room with extra large bed to find we'd been given the small room with a double. Given that I'm 6'4 we always ensure that when booking rooms we get at least a king size. When I went to speak to reception the attitude was, it was's fault, I didn't specify which family room I wanted (wasn't given the option) and anyway 'extra large beds aren't that much bigger'. At this point I'd heard enough and asked for full refund, which to be fair was given. Drove back home to Cumbria. Very disappointing. Zero customer service and complete lack of understanding. Best Western? My 9 year old son summed it up - Worst Western! Would not recommend. Also, if you choose to stay in Moffat, avoid the singing potter, he's a complete nutter!! He asked our children (12 and 9) if they knew what chastity was, told them about Jezzabel being eaten by dogs, and also warned them about the 'rapture' and what would happen to non believers. MOFFAT.... What a freaky place!!!!

Stacey M, Manager at Best Western Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Guest, I am sorry to hear that you have not had a good experience at Moffat House Hotel. I can only apologise if you were offended by the member of staff that welcomed you to the hotel I am sure she wasn't meaning her comments in anyway but friendly. I have looked further into your booking via and there was no stipulation with regards to you requiring a larger bed for yourself. With regards to the singing potter, this has nothing to do with the hotel. so I honestly do not think it is fair that you mark us down on that and to call Moffat Town freaky. I understand you're upset when you entered the room to find a standard double bed, you can leave notes on your booking so we are aware of any issues that may pop up so we can sort them prior to your arrival to the hotel. However, full payment was refunded to you as a gesture of goodwill on behalf of the hotel. I hope we will see you back at the Hotel in the near future. Kind Regards Ailsa Barr General manager

Lovely room, nice hotel, service not brilliant for evening meal. Had a long wait and as the meals were not served at the same time one of the group had almost finished their meal before the rest of us received our meal. Friendly service. The mattress cover did not quite fit the bed so was a bit uncomfortable to lay on!

"Motorcycle stopover"

We were touring Scotland on are bikes and stopped on the off chance considering motorcycle riders can be refused here and there we were treated fantastic, breakfast is highly recommend and caters for the largest appetites.... well done all the staff

"Friendly staff"

AndrewN424, Tadley, United Kingdom 14/05/2019

We were keen to take nonagenarian Margaret back to the place she had her wedding reception - Moffat House Hotel. We were warmly welcomed and given a room on the ground floor which helped greatly. Sadly the noisy dog in the next door room was not a similar bonus. Our room was spacious if a bit tired in its decor. We dined in the restaurant where food was fine if unremarkable. Throughout the staff were cheery and helpful.

"Just like it used to be !"

westerlyTruro, truro 05/05/2019

An outstanding hotel in terms of ambience style and ora. It reminded me of the good old days when service and a smile was normal so massively refreshing to experience this again. The food here is OUSTANDING as is the service and FRIENDLY demeanour of all the staff. If there is any negative comments one might add it would be that the hotel needs modernising and updating especially the rooms and old wooden windows. Beds need replacement as they are old and very hard.

"Fabulous interior & excellent food !"

Salamanda1911, Glasgow, United Kingdom 04/05/2019

Stopped off here by chance and had a snack lunch. Beautiful old mansion hotel, very roomy, bar area was busy with people having lunches. Our meal was excellent, great customer service & large portions. Would thoroughly recommend- the view to the rear gardens is lovely and the conservatory overlooks them.

"The Best Afternoon Tea in Moffat"

Fifiscamp, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 02/05/2019

I have no hesitation in saying this is the best afternoon tea you will find in Moffat by a mile. I've had lots of afternoon teas, and this was delicate and delicious. The most dainty sandwiches, desserts, scones with clotted cream, pretty cakes and biscuits. I had gluten free and was well catered for. It was served in the delightful conservatory with views over the lush gardens and beyond, with relaxing background music and immaculate service. You don't get a choice of teas, but really - this is superb value for money and really made some fantastic memories for us on a special day. Thankyou to the team at Moffat House for doing such a fine job, and in particular to the chef for her attention to detail and beautiful presentation.

connorm617, Inverness, United Kingdom 15/04/2019

Stayed overnight for work. Great location, Moffat is lovely. Room I had (17) was very nice and clean, big TV etc Had a cracking sleep and I'm very fussy when it come to hotel beds but this one was fine. Would stay again due to its location and lovely staff.

"A very good overnight stay"

ESSEMM53, Bridgnorth, United Kingdom 12/04/2019

We inadvertently booked this thinking it was somewhere else where we had stayed many years ago! It is a lovely old building with extra bedrooms in the side outbuildings. There is plenty of car parking space. The central staircase is stunning as it winds up through the different floors! There is a pretty garden outside at the back with seating weather permitting. Stacey on reception was so welcoming and smiling! Ross in the restaurant was great too. The other staff for whom I have no names were equally lovely and so cheerful. Our bedroom in the side wing, was spacious and comfortable which we had made up as a twin. Dog friendly room which suited us well. Clean and bright although, as with many places we have stayed in the last two weeks, the bedside lamps are too dim to read by! We removed the shades...which helped! We had dinner in the restaurant and it was really very good! The lasagne was very tasty and moreish and the steak my husband had was lovely too. Breakfast was self-service buffet style for the cereals etc and the cooked selection was made to order and it was lovely. As an overnight stay this hotel is perfect. It is reasonably priced too. The town of Moffat is really interesting for a walk around too with lots of independent shops which is such a change. was well worth eating and drinking in....a “must” to visit! All in all we will go back if we need a stop over in that area...not far off the motorway. Thank you to the team for making our stay so enjoyable.

"Great stay"

Patricia K, Ellesmere Port, United Kingdom 08/04/2019

We stayed in room 18 a very large 4 poster bed very comfy it was a fantastic room the bathroom had a corner bath which was also large and the bathroom was rather large too. We had the 2 steaks and a bottle of wine deal oh the steaks were so tender and tasty. The staff were friendly and very efficient. I would highly recommend this hotel.

"Good Choice"

johnmatchett44, London, United Kingdom 03/04/2019

We have stayed many times in Moffat and this review reflects this experience. Moffat is a lovely town in Dumfriesshire and the Moffat House is a good choice of hotel. Recommended. £77.50 for B & B. We also ate in the bar a great steak pie and fish and chips.

"62 Birthday Surprise"

User 02/04/2019

Our overnight stay was a surprise, well more a birthday present to me from my wife on my 62th birthday. Unknown to me she had booked the bridal suite room 18. Nice touch all being married 27 years. Anyhow the room was spotless with all the usual tea/coffee etc and a plush walk in bathroom with a king size bath. The hotel staff could not be more friendly, helpful and polite. We had our evening meal in the restaurant and again we could not fault the service we got and the food was excellent. After we sat in the bar area and had a few drinks. Lovely bar area and loved the local black cat popping into the visit the guests. Breakfast cooked to order and again faultless. We would have no issues to recommend this hotel to our friends and family and we well use again.

"A wedding lunch"

992chrissy, Redcar, United Kingdom 17/03/2019

We recently attended our daughter's wedding and had a celebration lunch at this hotel. We had the meal in the conservatory which was very pleasant with lovely views of the gardens. The couple were able to decorate the table as they wished, which was a lovely way to make it special for themselves and their guests. The meal was very enjoyable and the service was very good. A thoroughly enjoyable occasion.

lunaloovegood, Wishaw, United Kingdom 10/03/2019

I had an overnight here with my family, which included two disabled members. The rooms were clean and nice. They had good vegetarian options. The best part was the staff, Marianne was lovely in particular.

"Mini break"

25allisonc66, Ayr 05/03/2019

We have stayed several times at the cottage and have always enjoyed our visits. It is perfect for our Jack Russell terrier as it's a home-from-home. Plenty of walks and lots of hotels are dog friendly. Facilities in cottage are great and very comfortable bed in main bedroom. Quiet and relaxing break in a lovely town.

User 23/02/2019

"Excellent dog-friendly stay"

User 23/02/2019

Very nice hotel run by lovely friendly team. Genuinely dog-friendly with dogs allowed to eat with you in the bar. Comfortable, clean room and good food from bar menu and breakfast. Dog walks along river. Would recommend.

"Business trip"

912michaelh, Cleckheaton, United Kingdom 30/01/2019

Great location for midway stopover or exploration and hotel is beautiful old building with gravel parking to front.. room was on 2nd floor and stairs can be hard to navigate if not steady on your feet. The food was excellent and the breakfast is one of the best I have ever had, the steak pie just melted in your mouth

"Great cottage and warm reception"

O3050BGlisad, Preston, United Kingdom 28/01/2019

Have stayed in the hotel a few times but booked the cottage this time and will definitely do so again. It's really spacious and clean and the kitchen at the entrance is a great place for muddy boots. The bar area of the hotel is cosy with the open fire but the extra star is for the staff, especially Marianne. Friendly and welcoming without being intrusive - perfect!

"Lovely lunch in a beautiful location"

User 26/01/2019

Having stayed overnight here years ago, we popped in for lunch while out getting some post-Christmas fresh air. The hotel and grounds are as beautiful as we'd remembered. All four of us enjoyed our meals and the staff were very helpful and friendly when we asked for information on allergens. Dessert was amazing!

"Moffat House Hotel's cosy cottage"

32Peter, Glasgow, United Kingdom 26/01/2019

I've stayed in the hotel a few times now. The kids love it down in Moffat, especially the park and the sweet shop. We've stayed as a couple a few times and with the kids in one of the family rooms. Never felt short changed when we opened the door to our room. Always immaculate, a good size and maintained to a high standard. I'd been curious about the hotel's cottage and booked it for a change this time. We weren't disappointed. It was perfect for us. Kitchen, bathroom, two big bedrooms and a lovely conservatory livingroom looking into the picturesque gardens of the hotel. Felt like our own wee holiday home, but with the added benefits you'd expect from a hotel. This is a family-run hotel and we've gotten to know the owners during visits - lovey people and nothing's too much trouble. On our first return they remembered us too and we're just lovely with our two young boys, which was really nice. There was a wedding on at the time we stayed and it was great to be on the periphery of it - felt like an actual guest. The staff really looked after the happy couple and it looked like they had a great day. The breakfast at Moffat House as always is top quality. We ate out in the conservatory restaurant one of the nights we stayed - can't remember what it was called. Brilliant meal and a real warm and welcoming atmosphere. Most importantly, the kids cleared their plates too. Since we had the freedom of cottage we had fish suppers the next night!

"Great little place"

John S, Bridgwater, United Kingdom 13/01/2019

Stayed at the hotel for the second time while travelling down from the outer Hebrides. Perfect distance from the motorway with good access to cheaper fuel. The hotel has good parking and a welcome appearance from the outside. Check in was painless and done by a very friendly young lady. I was greeted like a returning friend rather than a guest which was nice. The room was very good with all the usual fare. The bed was comfy and bathroom clean. Breakfast was good with a nice selection of items available. All in all a nice place to stay. The local town is also well worth a visit and is literally outside the hotel.

"Lovely staff and food, very friendly"

User 08/01/2019

Stayed over early January (2nd January) with my 3 year old. The room was warm and clean and bath/shower TV all of good standard. We had dinner in the bar and the food was super, the vegetables in particular were really fresh and carefully cooked. The lovely waitress on remembered us from our last stay and gave a personal feel to the place. The staff seemed to care about what they deliver. We moved room as my little one didn't like the ground floor and again this was no trouble at all.Breakfast was perfect, I had the cooked option, eggs Florentine, and my little one had the continental. Again the staff were lovely and attentive. Will return again soon as it's very relaxed.

"Good sleep and excellent Breakfast"

Mary O, Glasgow, United Kingdom 26/11/2018

My husband and I stayed in this hotel a few years ago on a mid week break. However, on this occasion, our B&B overnight stay was on a Saturday night, but to our surprise, there was no noticeable difference in the number of guests. As we arrived from Glasgow on the bus and were early for check in, Marianne on Reception contacted Housekeeping and we were told that our room was ready. The room and bathroom were old fashioned but immaculately clean. The double bed was very comfortable with lovely white bedding, guaranteeing a good night's sleep. No noise from the hotel, you could have heard a pin drop. Marianne was back on duty for breakfast assisted by Veronika, a very friendly duo. A cold buffet table was set out with the usual choices. A selection of juices, milk, yoghurts etc. were displayed within a glass fridge, a great idea which I haven't come across before. Hot breakfast cooked to order and you are spoiled for choice on the breakfast menu. We also met the Chef, Marie, to congratulate her on her delicious cooked breakfast and presentation. Seemingly her home baking is a winner too if ordering afternoon tea. Can't wait to return to the Best Western Moffat House Hotel in the heart of the lovely market town.

"Brilliant room, lovely staff!"

sunshinexg, Carlisle, United Kingdom 14/11/2018

My partner and I stayed here for one night and absolutly loved it! The bed was amazing, massive and soooo comfy, didnt want to get out in the morning! The TV was also huge with lots of freeview channels, there was the option to have a bath as well as a shower. Very spacious wardrobe and very spacious room in general. The bathroom had a mirror with great lighting which was perfect for doing my makeup before we left for a prebooked meal (not at the hotel). Although when we returned we went to the 24 hour bar at the hotel and enjoyed a few gins before bed. The lady who greeted us at reception on arival was absolutely lovely and so helpful, couldnt fault her. She was also there helping out behind the bar when we came back later on. My boyfriend even said to me 'bet she puts in a shift while shes here' as she seemed so hard working being on reception then behind the bar as well, probably along with many other jobs. If we ever find ourselves back in moffat I would definetly stay here again as it was a great stay and well worth what we paid for our room.

"An excellent stay"

CharlesL837, London, United Kingdom 07/11/2018

Stayed here for one night en route to the Outer Hebrides. The bedroom was well appointed, the bathroom clean and modern, and the breakfast good. What proved especially good value was the dinner which was very low cost. Unfortunately that was reflected a little in food (and wine) quality, the "sous vide duck" having spent rather longer in the water bath than was commensurate with tenderising it. Nevertheless great value, and a place i will return to.

"Resting in peace! "

Love to come here for great coffee. So comfortable and warm. The staff are friendly and always smiling and pleasant. I like the atmosphere of warm and comfortable. In the winter there is a log fire too Free Wifi, pleasant to work on my iPad or just sit chatting with friends

WILLIAM W, Bolton, United Kingdom 06/11/2018

Not the most luxurious hotel, but comfortable and good food and service. At less than £ 100 per night for B & B it certainly isn't expensive. Moffat is one of our favourite places to stop off on long journeys North / South. So a night here was just the job !

"A Gem"

User 01/11/2018

Simply superb food!!!! We ate in the bar with a lovely open fire. Normally wary of eating in hotels but food here is faultless. Comfortable rooms and very friendly service! Thank you, would very happily return!!!

"A Scottish treasure"

Constantine38, The West 22/10/2018

I've stayed here many times. It is a grand old house set in the lovely small town of Moffat. The hotel is slightly on the tired side and could do with a bit of updating - however saying that I really like it. I've never had a bad nights sleep. the beds are comfy and rooms are clean. The best thing though is the breakfast...simply fantastic. Really sets you up for the day! including Haggis which is a great addition.

"Central, comfortable and great staff"

RachelsGrandma, County Durham, United Kingdom 19/10/2018

Just off the motorway we stayed on night to break a journey from the Highlands. Reasonable rate with good parking, located in town center. Located on 1st floor in a standard double, very clean, comfortable and tidy with quirky uneven floor (typical of old house). Bathroom could have done with an update. Staff very helpful and friendly. Lovely breakfast, hot and well cooked. Took evening meal in bar area and it was lovely. Only complaint was a rumbling noise from below from 6pm for two hours when mentioned to reception they said it was the housekeeping tumble dryer and they would mention it to staff.

"Lunch at Moffat House Hotel"

Donald L, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 19/10/2018

Stopped here on the way back home for lunch. Good choice of traditional style menu, e.g. burgers, fajitas, meat dishes, along with a childrens menu etc. We thought the food was grand and the staff were very friendly, one even came running after us when our little one left her gloves.

"Excellent, for the price"

Matthew W, Birmingham, United Kingdom 08/10/2018

I have stayed at Moffat house hotel on 2 occasions about a year apart and most recently early October 2018. If you are expecting a slick and modern hotel, then this isn't for you. But it is excellent value for money, really very charming and I found it to be clean and tidy. Although I stayed in what I would imagine is one of the more basic single rooms, the bed linen was of a very high quality cotton and the bed extremely comfortable. Yes, it could do with some upgrades in the decor and fixtures and fittings, but you have to remember the price you are paying. Staff are all very friendly. The bar is well stocked - although the interior design of the bar is a real let down in such a fantastic old building!! Someone has done their best to make the bar area feel like you are sat in a c.1990's new built chain hotel in the centre of a city somewhere - you really would have no idea you were in a historic building. The area has absolutely zero character. A quick cheap fix would be better lighting. I had breakfast, which was clearly made with high quality ingredients and well worth the cost - even taking into account the cost of breakfast, my stay cost only £47 in total. I regularly travel from the midlands to the northern Highlands and Moffat is a good halfway stop off if I don't want to do the drive in one go - so I'm sure I'll be staying again.

"Dog friendly "

User 06/10/2018

Very welcoming staff ,Dog friendly hotel fantastic staff make you feel very welcome nice cosy lounge bar with fire . Attractive front to the hotel in a very nice small town with lots to see and do. On the southern upland way route for walkers stop for lunch and beer or stay the night very pleasant surprise. Thank you.

"One night stay"

Weedode, Scotland 28/09/2018

Stayed here as an overnight stop whilst heading south , good value for money a wee bit dated but sometimes this adds to the character, Would use again if needed, staff were all friendly. Did see some people having a small issue with parking when it got a bit busier but no charge for on street parking just opposite. Cannot comment on food as never ate here (room only) there are a few places on the main street will do a breakfast as well as the hotel if you fancy somewhere different.

"Large room and good breakfast"

Jonathan T, Leamington Spa, United Kingdom 17/09/2018

We chose this hotel largely because of the location and parking. Family room was large and comfortable, if a little dated. Lots of steps and no lift to upper floors, but there are ground floor rooms. While the welcome on arrival was average, the welcome at breakfast was much warmer and the breakfast offering was decent. Would certainly stay here again.

"Sunday lunch"

eilrus, Lanark, United Kingdom 10/09/2018

Taking my 89 year old mother out for Sunday lunch. She is pretty much confined to a wheelchair and first problem was the gravel surrounding the entrance was most definitely not wheelchair friendly. Once we arrived at the door we were faced with a step of about 4 inches to enter. The staff brought a portable wooden ramp and had to help us into the building. Once inside we were taken to the conservatory where we enjoyed our lunch. The waiting staff were very nice. Unfortunately her favourite choice of roast beef was not on the menu. The toilet was our next challenge. Another step of again about 4 inches and the portable ramp brought along. Inside the toilet was again another challenge having to move bins etc to gain entry. Impossible also to gain entry to the wash hand basin area as it was too narrow for the wheelchair to enter. Naturally we had the same problems in reverse. I have got to say the staff were very helpful in bringing the ramp and assisting me taking the wheelchair up and down but it still left me quite stressed and therefore I'm afraid I will not be returning.

"Nice exterior, interior ready for a facelift"

Dave Y, Emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates 06/09/2018

From the outside you are given the impression of a Borders country house. The inside does not live up to the promise. The decor is tired and stuck in the eighties. The lounge bar is over lit and has a collection of music matched furniture, it reminds me of a working men's club bar, all that's missing is the bingo! The room is adequate, but again, would be outdone by a travel lodge or some budget chains. If looking for location and cost then it ticks the boxes. In its favour it has a splendid gin menu.

"Lovely staff, good service, enjoyable stay"

crcartw, kilmarnock, scotland 03/09/2018

Stayed overnight to meet up with friends! Staff couldn't have been more friendly or helpful. Our request for a ground floor room and electrical extension cable had already been organised. Well stocked bar! Great gin & whiskey options!! Wished we could have squeezed in the afternoon tea - looked lovely! Room was spacious, had plenty tea, coffee, decaf and hot choc in room. My only wish would have been for slightly more power in shower! Will look forward to a return trip- maybe with no rain!

"Wedding Party"

lincarkin, Port Ellen, United Kingdom 02/09/2018

Had a lovely 2 night stay in this hotel. Our family room was located In the annex across from the main door which was lovely & private. The wedding went without any hitches & staff were very attentive & professional. Wedding meal was fantastic. Nice venue. Very centrally located in the town , walking distance to shops, pubs etc.

"Nice loaction in the centre of town"

Mr_Spock56, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom 01/09/2018

We stayed here whilst on route to Scotland using it as an intermediary stop over point. Our large room was lovely with a high ceiling (typical of an old country house) and a bathroom (little dated) that included a bath but weak shower. Also the walls are a bit thin so you can hear whats going on above and below you.The hotel has nice friendly staff and plenty of parking as well as being located in a good central position in town. It had two generic hand pulled beers (not really to my taste) and seemed popular with locals and tourists alike. The food choice looked good although we didn't eat here (having eaten already). There is a nice outside drinking and eating area to the rear

Northernlass13, Dumfries, United Kingdom 08/08/2018

We came to Moffat house hotel for my nieces wedding , lovely oldy worldy hotel with lots of character, room was spacious, clean & comfy bed only downside was we couldn't get He temperature on the shower to work, it was to hot or to cold,& there was a big step in the bathroom that you could of fell down as all the tiles were dark coloured. The wedding was amazing & was held outside as it was a beautiful day, staff were lovely & friendly & couldn't do enough to make everything run smoothly which it did. The wedding meal was lovely the buffet on the evening was lovely, the bar ran out of pink gin which was a shame but everyone had a great day. A truly wonderful place to get married.

"Very Disappointing!"

User 07/08/2018

On the positive side, staff were friendly and quality of food was good - but overpriced - especially the breakfast!! Main concern was cleanliness - black mould around bath, mould along bottom of shower screen, toothpaste running down bathroom door, finger marks down door. Furniture and fittings very dated - and extremely creaky bed. Frayed carpets going up staircase. The bar area resembles a function room in a bowling club! The receptionist did apologise, but the indicated that they were going through a process of refurbishment - no evidence of this, but definitely needed. At an average of £85 per night (room only), I expected better. Very disappointing!

"Impressive building"

ag0ll, West Lothian, United Kingdom 03/08/2018

Picked up a late deal for this hotel. Arrived slightly early and apologised to chap at reception. Absolutely no problem, greeted with a welcoming smile and friendly attitude. Good communication regarding fundamentals . Room clean and tidy, plenty tea and coffee. Lovely biscuits!. Bathroom itself in need of refurb but once again very clean. Tv a bit on the small side. Overall and for the price very happy with our stay and would return. Never tried the bar as read in previous review beer £5.50 a pint, thought breakfast overpriced at £12.50 pp so went elsewhere.

"Excellent hotel"

User 28/07/2018

Stopped here on Wednesday night. Check in was smooth and fast. Very friendly staff and the room was spotless with the most comfortable beds you could wish for 10 out of 10 highly recommend it.location is excellent too right in the heart of the town.

"Lovely staff and a good nights sleep"

BBOSE, Glasgow, United Kingdom 25/07/2018

I was down visiting family but as the house was full, I booked a room for one night on a single basis. Staff were all very friendly and chatty. Check in and check out was easy and straightforward. Room 4 was small but cosy and had everything I required. Tea and coffee making facilities, tv, comfy single bed, iron and iron board and a decent shower. Nice view out the back over the gardens where you can sit and have a drink or some food. Great value for money and I wouldn't have a problem staying here again. Tip: Book direct through the hotel website for up to 10% off per room per night compared to all the comparison sites.

"Lovely place"

Scotty975, Derby, United Kingdom 20/07/2018

Had a really pleasant one night stay here. Good sized room with three single beds, enough storage space and enough room to move about easily. Lovely garden at the rear perfect for enjoying a beer in the sun. Bathroom was a little tired but perfectly adequate. Well stocked bar with large seating area although the 'canteen style' tables and chairs looked out of place. Didn't eat here so can't comment on the restaurant or breakfast. Staff were smart, polite and helpful. Would use again.

"Handy for the M74"

StephBB1210, Scarborough, United Kingdom 20/07/2018

Chose this hotel for an overnight stay due to its location close to the M74 and in that respect it was perfect. The staff were friendly and efficient but the small room was disappointing. I had an evening meal in the bar and that was OK, but didn't stay for breakfast. I would stay again in the location suited

"You get what you pay for........."

Tim512, West Sussex 19/07/2018

..............and I paid very little, so I got very little! This used to be a great hotel in one of the most beautiful buildings in the Borders. It is still a beautiful building, but that's about it! The worst feature was my bathroom facing the front of the building. It had net curtains and no other means of privacy, so at night everyone in the street could see what I was up to when the bathroom light was on! Thank goodness there are other hotels in Moffat.

"Excellent stopover "

jscoates, Leeds, United Kingdom 16/07/2018

Like many of the other guests we were having a one night stopover between home and the north of Scotland. The whole booking process was very easy, the food was excellent and the staff very friendly. Unfortunately our room was near the road where Sunday night revellers from the pub next door were very noisy.

"A Good Nights Rest"

bjchampness, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom 13/07/2018

Our comfortable room was well appointed with every convenience. Access was via a low wooden step from the car park, close to the main road. The weather was very hot. On opening the window we were exposed to traffic noise. Luckily traffic stoped by 10:30 pm. I would recommend this hotel as a stop over on the route north to Glasgow.

"A very pleasant stay"

maltwhiskyman, Somerset 12/07/2018

We stayed for 1 night on our way towards the Isle of Mull. Although the building is a little tired looking cosmetically the stay itself was very enjoyable. Cheerful and helpful staff, a nice spacious bedroom overlooking the garden and a lovely freshly prepared cooked breakfast eased us nicely into the remainder of our journey.

"Good for dogs"

Bezi, London, United Kingdom 12/07/2018

Best place in town if you have a dog, I am sure they get loads of business on the back of that fact alone. We had a courtyard room which was nice and big. It was surprisingly cool considering the heatwave that was going on while we stayed there. The furnishing were not the best and the shower was very bad in the sense that there was virtually no water pressure! It had free wifi and there was tea and coffee in the room but no fridge. We didn't eat there but we did have a drink in the garden which was very well kept. If you have a dog this is probably the best choice in town.

"Great experience and very dog friendly"

naviasky, Liverpool, England 12/07/2018

Really nice hotel. Staff were all friendly and helpful. On checking in we were upgraded to a bigger room as best westerm members. Very dog friendly - they prepared a table for breakfast for us and our dog in the bar and bought our dog a freshly cooked sausage in a bowel especially for her! The sausage went down well.

"Afternoon tea birthday treat from my dear friend."

Joyce E, Dumfries, Scotland, United Kingdom 11/07/2018

Absolutely the best afternoon tea ever. Tasty freshly made sandwiches, delicious tiny scones served with butter jam and cream. A strawberry and raspberry cream compote, melt in the mouth meringues and tiny chocolate tarts. All washed down with fresh brewed coffee and lots of iced water. Service attentive but unobtrusive.

BarnyIsleofMan, Isle of Man 01/07/2018

The room was quite spacious, but one drawer was dirty and we could not put clothes away in it and the shade on the table lamp was stained. Not desperately bad, but off putting. Of more concern was the fact that many of the rooms involved crossing the forecourt, some 50 yards outside in order to reach the bar or restaurant. Not ideal given the Scottish climate. Our meal was well cooked, but the ingredients were not of a quality, we felt, to justify the price. Overall, not bad but hardly better than average...

"Pleasantly Surprised"

johnnycollington, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 17/06/2018

I took my elderly parents for a nice drive to Moffat and then lunch. Came across the Moffat House Hotel. Parking was easy and food was really good. We all enjoyed our dishes and the attention of the staff. Just over an hours drive from Glasgow or Edinburgh and well worth it. ????

"Nice location"

MutantV8, Pontypridd, United Kingdom 11/06/2018

Excellent location, right in the middle of town. I stayed for 1 night on a motorcycle and found the carpark a bit dodgy due to the gravel. I didn't sample a breakfast at an extra £12.50 and my room was extremely dated, but I'm not complaining too much as it was a decent price.

"Enjoyable visit"

WestLothianLilly, West Lothian 07/06/2018

We stayed for a one night break, lunch the day we arrived, evening dinner and breakfast - all cooked and presented well. Good selection of food available and bar drinks. Very dog friendly too - we ate our meals in the bar area, spacious and friendly. There is a lovely beer garden, benches/seats and a nice area for dog owners to walk round, very handy for early morning and late night requirements ! Staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was clean, and spacious enough for us and 2 large dogs. We would be happy to return to the hotel in future.

"Best hotel I have ever stayed in & best dog friendly hotel"

_lambert_claire, Lowestoft, United Kingdom 01/06/2018

Lovely room, comfortable beds, clean, friendly staff could not do enough for you, Marianne was my favourite she spoilt our dog Bertie rotten getting him a sausage for breakfast every morning! Food was delicious, cooked breakfast & hot beverages bought to your table, buffet for cereal & toast etc. My daughter couldn't eat all her omelette so they gave us a take away container with a fork so she could have it later. Restaurant was no dogs but large bar lounge dogs were allowed into and this was lovely. Evening meal was extremely good, lots of choice, steak a little pricy but plenty of other good choices seemed reasonable but you got what you paid for as all food was excellent. No negatives at all but beware no lift, we had family room on 2nd floor but if you have poor mobility check with hotel first. Just 1 tip to improve (& i'm Being picky here) please have bottles of ketchup on the tables, the sachets are a nightmare to open & you do not look great with tomato sauce all down your front!

"Wonderful wedding"

User 29/05/2018

Our daughter's wedding was held here on the 26th May and we could not have asked for better. As weather was brilliant, the actual wedding was held in the garden - old oak tree great for background for photos. Swings and slides for kids. The function room was beautiful and the wedding breakfast was, according to my rather taciturn nephew, the best wedding food he had ever had. The meal was really very tasty.. My sister and family stayed in the cottage and reported it was one of the best equipped places that she had ever stayed in. Also very comfortable. Would highly recommend it for families. The evening buffet was very generous and also tasty. If I was doing it again, I would remember to order tea and coffee as I was desperate for a cup of tea! Fortunately, my sister could produce a mug of tea from her cottage. All our guests felt they had a real break and thanks to Paul and his team for making our day memorable. I would certainly recommend Moffat as a great place to hold a wedding.

We have stayed previously, and use this hotel for a stop off on the way to and from North Scotland. Clean, tidy and friendly. Good food. Enthusiastic young staff, but lack of experience shows now and again.

This is a nice Hotel in a lovely small town, Lot's to see and do in the area (Cafe's and bars aplenty), it is very handy for me as it is very close to the Motorway A74M (not too close as you can't hear it unlike some of the Hotels in Gretna), This hotel is very Historic so if you or any of your Party have a Disability you should phone ahead as there is no lift.. I enjoyed my stay and would stay here again..

Pleasant old building, designed by John Adam for the 2nd Earl of Hopetoun, begun in 1762 and completed 5 years later. The main 3 story oval stair case is now the star feature. Pleasant ground floor eating and drinking rooms.

"Best western moffat"

Ethne C, Isle of Arran, United Kingdom 03/05/2018

Enjoyed our stay very much. Nice bar with delightful young helpful barman. Our room was excellent and very comfortable with a nice big bathroom and shower. We had a very good bar meal. The surroundings were very peaceful and attractive in the dining room for breakfast. Poor continental breakfast and quite expensive cooked breakfast. In. Great situation right in the middle of an attractive town

"Security of room was worrying"

parky117, Wigan, United Kingdom 23/04/2018

We visited here as we were attending a wedding nearby. We got allocated Room 19 which is a ground floor room in the courtyard. The idea is that there is an outside door into a small hallway whereby rooms 18 & 19 can be accessed. This door could not be locked as the locking mechanism was out of line with the lock opening. This meant that any member of the public was one flimsy hotel room and lock away from accessing your room. This was classed as the extra upgraded suite!! Having said this there are rooms within the main building so when booking request one of these. The staff where very friendly and assisted with a couple of portable heaters as there room was so big yet cold. The breakfast was really nice.

Stacey M, Manager at Best Western Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to write a review, parky117. Your feedback is very much appreciated regarding the room entrance, we hadn't realised this was an issue as the doors were so recently replaced, but it seems the wood has warped during it's battle with the Scottish weather! Maintenance has been notified and this should no longer be a problem for future guests. Your kind comments regarding the staff have been passed on. We hope you'll keep us in mind if you're travelling back to the area. Kind Regards, Stacey

Had great night away at the Moffat House Hotel, just what me and my wife needed. Our room was fantastic. Very clean, huge and the four poster bed made it more special. We enjoyed a beautiful meal in their Oak Tree Restaurant where the service was just as good as the food! Well done Moffat House Hotel until the next time.

Hi, I stayed in Dulux room(No.3) with my partner on Saturday night, I feel the room did not look the same as the one advertised in picture, maybe this was a dearer room in picture. The bed also creaked every time we moved lol. The room and bathroom was spotless. Check in and breakfast was faultless.

Stacey M, Manager at Best Western Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review, martincarroll68. We have two deluxe rooms on site, so a 50/50 chance of getting the one pictured on the site. If you stay with us again, be sure to request the specific room you'd like and we will do our best to make sure that you get it. Regards, Stacey

"Fabulous wedding venue!"

beccasale1986, Braintree, United Kingdom 13/03/2018

We had our wedding here this past Saturday and it couldn't have been better! From the get go, the wedding planner (Paul) was fabulous and accommodated any requests we had. During the wedding itself, there was an army of staff on hand to ensure we were in the right places at the right times and that everything was running smoothly. It was an amazing day and night and I would thoroughly recommend it to anyone looking for a warm, happy and budget-friendly wedding. In terms of the rooms and food... amazing! The bridal suite is beautiful and massive! We ate at the bar before the wedding then had a wedding breakfast there and it was all immense and the portions were not small! The staff are always smiley and lovely and even took the time to sign our guest book!

Booked a one night stay to visit Moffat again. On arrival the receptionist was very abrupt and apart from asking me to fill in the registration card said nothing else. I was then told that as it was a one night stay I needed to pay in full on arrival. Having stayed in many other Best Western Hotels I was somewhat taken aback by this request, we usually have a drink in the bar of any hotels we visit and often eat in. Given the demand to pay before we even saw the room seemed rather odd. The room was ok but could do with a paint touch up and a more modern shower would not go amiss. Given the abruptness on arrival we chose not to spend any further money in the establishment but found plenty of friendly places nearby. Will return to Moffat but not to this hotel.

"Lovely hotel, lovely staff"

User 05/02/2018

My husband and I spent a lovely week-end in this beautiful listed building. It is a hotel full of character and our room was just lovely. We ate in the restaurant on the 3 nights of our visit. At breakfast we could see the lovely views from the glass walls of the restaurant. It would be a perfect venue for a wedding! Our meals were beautifully served and were delicious - compliments to the chef! What really impressed us, too, were the staff - every one most pleasant, friendly and helpful. We'll be back when, hopefully, the lovely cottage of the hotel is available. Unfortunately it was booked on our dates but was then available - just as we had to leave, so we had a peek, courtesy of the chambermaids. Well done to all the staff!

"Weekend stay my wifes birthday"

Bob554, Wigan, United Kingdom 30/01/2018

Room was great, clean and well appointed. Staff were very helpful in particular Stacey and Craig. Made us very welcome and could not do enough to help. The food was first class and the bar was very well stocked. Lots of parking space which is not always the case with hotels. I will be going back to this hotel

"Lovely overnight stay"

Gordon66_L, Wishaw Scotland 25/01/2018

I had bought a voucher for an overnight stay for 2 with prosecco and breafast for my wife's Christmas.Booked hotel for the 22nd January 18. Check in was quick and easy and ALL staff we dealt with both on phone during booking and our stay, were friendly, helpful and attentive. No prosecco in room but a quick chat with reception and wine was waiting for us in our room on our return from a walk in the village. Room (16) was warm, comfortable and clean (what more can you ask for) with good bath and shower facilities. As an old historic building I would imagine it would be pretty much impossible to fully modernise but there was good, free wifi and we didnt hear any noise from outside, though we were in a room looking onto courtyard and main road. Plenty of tea, coffee and hot chocolate in room. We didnt eat in the restaurant in the evening, however if the breakfast was anything to go by then im sure dinner wouldve been of same high standard and quality.Plenty of choice both continental and cooked. Good sized portions, cooked to perfection.Top marks for milk and fruit etc stored in fridge beside cereals. Some hotels leave milk etc out on cereal table so its at room temperature!. Overall I would totally recommend hotel for an overnight or short break. Gordon Reford

"Quality Hotel"

Cliffy315, Stourbridge 17/01/2018

This wasn't a planned visit but an emergency booked by my company after I was stuck in the mayhem that was the M74 on January 16th,my stay was very short arriving at 3.00 AM having been on the road for 11 hours. The night porter who booked me in could not have been friendlier and set the tone ,yes I was knackered but the room was great and the bed really comfortable so I slept like a log, next morning and breakfast in a lovely Conservatory style room overlooking picturesque gardens, looking very photogenic in the snow, the breakfast menu was stunning and the full Scottish I had was real quality with the national delicacies of Haggis and Tattie Scones The waitress and manager were also extremely friendly, the manager especially who helped immensely in getting my snowbound car off the car park and on my way home. Hopefully I will get the chance to stay here again in less trying circumstances

"Lovely Historic House"

User 04/01/2018

I loved staying in this remarkable hotel as I love history. It is a beautifully presented hotel which is very clean and well equipped. We had the family room which had a queen bed and 2 singles. There was plenty of room for our suitcases, etc. We only stayed 1 night as we were passing through but I highly recommend this hotel.

"Overnight stay."

Helen G, Wishaw, United Kingdom 11/12/2017

Stayed overnight when visiting Dark Sky area Moffat. On entering the hotel, we were given a friendly greeting from the receptionist. Our room (No.7) was very spacious but was beautifully warm. The room was spotlessly clean and had a well-stocked hospitality tray. May I respectfully suggest that a top sheet under the duvet would make the bedding more comfortable. Also the chairs in the room aren't very comfortable to sit on if reading. Straight-backed chairs with no arms could be replaced with armchairs. The room is big enough to take these. This is not a complaint, just a suggestion. While we were there, we found the water in the shower room only lukewarm, certainly not warm enough for a shower, both in the evening and at 8:30 the following morning. We mentioned this to Marianne when we were checking out, and she informed me that being an older building and if many people were showering around the same time, this sometimes happens, but if we had phoned reception, they could have switched the booster on. We had a meal in the dining room the night before, and enjoyed what we had. Staff, particularly Marianne and Craig were a credit to the hotel.

"Working excursions to Scotland"

User 23/11/2017

Short trip up to Scotland for work for three days. Pleasant single room (number 4) on second floor, original staircase and other architectural features. Friendly & helpful staff and a reasonable price for room at £45 per night, breakfast extra but very tasty, good bacon, parking in front of hotel, reasonable Wi-Fi. Good choice on menu.

"Very welcoming friendly hotel"

mickwad, Doncaster, United Kingdom 22/11/2017

A very nice hotel with very welcoming staff.Excellent food and service, the venison wellington was excellent and cooked to perfection. The full Scottish breakfast was also well cooked . Room was adequate with a good bath and shower, plenty of tea and coffee provided. Would definately stay here again

"Short break"

314Tegwen, Manchester, United Kingdom 14/11/2017

Having stayed at Best Weterns before, we decided to spend a couple of nights in their Moffat property. Check in was quick and we were allotted room 15. The room is quite dated but had everything we needed. Coffee and tea making facilities. The room was cold due to the electric heater not being switched on for our arrival. During the evening we found out that we were above the toilets, with the doors banging and the hot air dryer blasting away. This quietened down after 11pm. We decided to,have dinner in house the first night. The lone bar person come waitress worked very hard and the food was good. However an over friendly cat from a neighbours house made itself at home on the furnishings during the evening. My wife is very allergic to cats and wouldn't want to have been sat on a seat where it had been. The hotel needs a bit of an upgrade, but the staff were helpful and we would certainly use it again.

"Very pleasant hotel, with great staff."

User 10/11/2017

I stayed here for just one night, to break up my journey to Glasgow, where I had a meeting the following morning. It's something I used to do years ago, and I must admit to having something of a soft spot for Moffat. The hotel itself is visually very appealing from the outside, and occupies a very good spot within Moffat. I was greeted with a warm welcome, and checked-in very quickly and efficiently. My allocated room, was room 8; a reasonably sized room, that although a little dated, was warm, clean and comfortable. The bathroom, which had been created by putting up a dividing wall from what once was a bigger room, was clean and with a good shower. Being on the front of the hotel on the main road, the bathroom would've benefitted from a window blind, to prevent passers by having to see a silhouette of me going to the toilet once the lights were switched on! My dinner of venison wellington in the hotel restaurant was superb, and once again service was warm and friendly. My full Scottish breakfast the following morning was of the same high standard, made all the more enjoyable by my view of the grounds to the rear of the hotel. Should I find myself in Moffat again in the future, I wouldn't hesitate to stay here once more.

"Great overnight stay"

Anne E, Elgin, United Kingdom 07/11/2017

Though our room was a little drab, it had a fabulous outlook on to the back lawn and garden. Single beds were comfy and clean. Staff were brilliant from we come in to farewell. Garden room resterant is tops, both for atmosphere and service. The food divine. Thank you for a great round off to our great holiday of a lifetime on QM2. Would rate it 5 for service, location 4 and sleep quality 4 but can't make the star setting work!

"Very clean & comfy although dated and noisy! "

MrMrsOconnor, UK 29/10/2017

We stayed here for 1 night over Halloween weekend! We were pleased with the room we were given no 16 for the price over looking the front of the hotel with a double bed and large bathroom with shower over bath. What struck us fist was the friendly reception and quick check in, easy to find rooms as small place. Room basic very clean but a little dated in style however carpets and bedding new, again very clean and comfortable room. Not huge. Shower in the bathroom not very powerful bit of a puzzle trying to work out heat mix as the shower was over the bath, but got their in the end. No central heating so wall electric heater provided great fast heat. The rest of the hotel again is very clean but still dated, could be amazing if renovated I have no doubt. The best western has the best position in this small traditional town. The bar area is comfortable offering a very impressive range of alcoholic drinks was nice to relax here before a meal. Staff at the hotel are friendly. To the worst point which again is not the hotels fault directly I appreciate this but it was still disturbing. Every time a car pulls on to the hotel you will hear it as they have gravel out the front entrance. The windows are traditional old windows allowing sound straight in also so every car door and conversation etc even foot steps could be heard crystal clearly. Also it should be mentioned that the base and music from the bar next door was so loud it was impossible to get to sleep until this has been turned off! When the village finally went quiet around 3 am it was a great nights sleep, the bed was very comfortable and again waking up to the sound of the birds out side in all the ivy really nice it's now that you would appreciate the traditional beauty of this small place! Would I return? no but I will recommend for 1 or 2 nights perhaps on a stop over , I'm certainly not complaining. Clean & comfortable and for the price i can live with that for 1 night!

User 25/10/2017

My wife and I decided on a short break away to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Moffat is only a short one hour drive away from our home and an ideal location for a one night short break. The hotel was perfect from receiving a warm welcome, the large king size bed in a spacious room, a lovely meal in their Oakview restaurant which looks on to a large rear garden. After a full Scottish breakfast we headed home having thoroughly enjoyed our short visit. I highly recommend.

"A good hotel for summer ?"

Craig S, Cheltenham, United Kingdom 24/11/2016

Not so much the winter as the heating in the rooms left a lot to be desired. If I was stayng there again I would not take one of the single rooms as they are rather small, that said they are all ensuite and would have been @good [email protected] if the heating and hot water issues were solved. The staff were all bright, helpful and the food pretty good as well.

"Lovely Hotel"

Patricia G, Liverpool, United Kingdom 22/11/2016

Nice hotel with a very comfortable bar and restaurant and in a great location close to all shops etc. Originally I tried to book the executive rooms but they were fully booked, we felt the standard rooms were a bit too small for us but certainly didn't spoil our stay. The staff are all excellent, very polite and helpful. We had diner at the hotel which was excellent as was the breakfast ( one of the best we had in Scotland ). Thank you to all concerned. See you soon.

"Pleasant Hotel In Pleasant Town"

Estragon01, Romsey, United Kingdom 21/11/2016

Pleasant hotel, just off the main street with room for parking. Staff friendly and helpful, breakfast was tasty but evening meals seemed rather limited and tad on the expensive side. My room was clean and functional and facilities in good working order. Would have no hesitation in staying again

"Old fashioned hotel"

User 29/10/2016

We booked the four poster room which was a fantastic price. There was a bit of confusion at checkout as we had advanced paid the booking but she could not find her receipt despite us having ours. This put a bit of a bad tastes in our mouth. The bar is lovely the rooms old fashioned and if you are looking for modern chic this is not the place. If you don't mind aged rooms and carpets this is the place. The rooms were spotless.

"Satisfactory, but could do with a makeover"

clifford p, Oxford, United Kingdom 25/10/2016

We were passing through, stayed only night and did not eat there. All OK but generally faded appearance. Apart from the (new?) dining room which looked a very nice place to eat. (We were too mean to pay 12.50 each for breakfast and went to cafe over the road for a coffee and croissant, but do not recommend this.)

"Poor service"

macka_10, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 24/10/2016

We arrived early evening and the bar area was messy empty cups on tables, chairs all over and tables not clean. The meal it's self on the whole was quite good except for finding a foreign object in my fish. When after a while the server/ bar person came to clear the table I mentioned it to them and showed them. Nothing was done not even a sorry just a shrug of the shoulders. The same member of staff was more concerned with warming them self by the fire and chatting to his colleague. All in all not the family dinner planed. It's a shame as the hotel it's self is a lovely old building with lots of character. I have been here before and then it was absolutely fine. May be a bad night . However more like staffing issues and lots more training required.

"Good stay"

spencerallen, Whiteley, United Kingdom 23/10/2016

Stayed here for one night recently. Nice and clean - room 20 large and nice touches like plenty of milk which you don't normally get. Dinner really nice in the bar - steak and ale pie with veg nice. Staff friendly and next day, breakfast was good. Only gripe was that the shower didn't work but bath fine.

"A three star hotel that punches above its weight"

Frank6449, Andover, United Kingdom 21/10/2016

Have stayed here 3-4 times. The hotel is well situated in the middle of Moffat. The rooms are comfortable and the amenities are good. We have only eaten breakfast which is excellent. The bar requires updating. Good range of beers and spirits. Would stay there again.

"Character Hotel"

Medaman121212, Dereham, United Kingdom 19/10/2016

Stayed here in September 2016 on a stopover to Oban in Scotland. The hotel benefits from ample free parking at the front of the hotel and is ideally situated to explore the town. Being an old building the rooms are huge and non corporate, our room had a bath and overhead shower and both the room and bathroom were adequately centrally heated. TV and tea facilities were supplied as well as free WIFI although you will need a code from the reception to access the internet. We ate in the bar rather than the restaurant (photo attached) which had a large seating area and a cosy feel about it. The staff were very pleasant and obliging and the food was to a good standard and reasonably priced. Bed comfortable and nothing to fault would certainly recommend this hotel for as being competitively priced and and an ideal overnighter or indeed for a longer stay. Ask about the steak meal deal with free bottle of wine.

theodolite2000, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 15/10/2016

Lovely hotel and staff and dinner/room service. Strange however that the shower is plumbed into bath taps and has poorest pressure and temperature ever seen since 1970. Fire doors labelled keep shut wedged open. Outer security door to annexed rooms not working as door swollen with weather I expect. Pretty much not acknowledged by staff at breakfast and only offered tea or coffee when someone came in for breakfast. Home kitchen toaster - slow to brown/toast bread. Checking out noticed a £30 hike in the rate compared to booking rate - all sorted but all of the above does leave you wondering - how did this hotel get a Best Western rating... that's my reflection anyway.

"Could be Better"

Cecil K, Newcastle, United Kingdom 13/10/2016

Very pleasant looking hotel. Staff very helpful and pleasant. Rooms being updated, room very spacious, but bathroom cold with cold air coming in air vent. Somehow housekeeping missed our room. Did not book breakfast, but evening meals in hotel very good. Overall although few problems enjoyed our stay.

"Sunday Carvery"

harriets7, Windermere, United Kingdom 09/10/2016

We often meet our family at Moffat for Sunday Lunch and have been to the Best Western / Moffat House on a number of occasions. They have recently re-introduced a Sunday Carvery Lunch. Tell all your family and friends !!!, Our Sunday Lunch on the 2nd of October was absolutely superb !!!!, one of the best Carvery / Sunday Lunches we have ever had. The whole familly, five of us, never left anything on our plates. Tip for the Restaurant - Display your Sunday Lunch banner more prominently and let a lot more people know that you are serving Lunches, mind you, if you do, we may have a problem getting in next time !!!. Trevor and Christine Aston - Windermere.

User 03/10/2016

The sign outside was enticing but inside was dull and very 70's decor. We ordered lunch in the bar and it arrived almost immediately which indicated that it was pre-cooked! Both starter and main arrived together so the main was cold when we came to eat it. Overall very poor.

"Beautiful wedding"

Alan C, Glasgow, United Kingdom 03/10/2016

We were invited to close friends wedding here, but didn't manage to stay as it was fully booked so stayed next door. The hotel is lovely to the eye, has a charming feel inside, the gardens are perfect for photos or just enjoying afternoon tea or a quiet drink. The wedding went very well, with the hotel providing lovely rooms gor the service & reception. We sat in one of the conservatories while photos were taken outside. Then sat out in the gardens which as I said give a relaxing feel to your afternoon. I would like to go back to sample an overnight & enjoy the accomodation as friends told us the rooms were lovely & comfortable.

Impromptu stay after husband hospitalised while on hols in Scotland. What a great team they have here, everyone is very friendly, and made my extended stay as comfortable as possible. You must try the breakfast, amazing! Rooms are a little tired, but this all adds to the atmosphere, they are very comfortable with everything you could need, and they are very generous with the complimentary tea and coffee.

"Beautiful Cottage "

safrone81, Belfast, United Kingdom 26/09/2016

We stayed in the cottage which was modern, beautifully decorated. Sky Tv For the Kids and free wifi. It's perfect for family to stay self catering with plenty places to eat on your door stop. The parking was fantastic just outside the door. Loved our stay and would recommend for family's or small groups. 10/10 can't fault the service or staff very attentive and friendly.

"Pretty awful lunch"

ebontour, Glasgow, United Kingdom 26/09/2016

Stopped in at this hotel for a soup/sandwich lunch. There is another hotel across the road, and that is where we should have gone. The soup was, allegedly, scotch broth, but really was just a gloopy bowl of liquid with a lot of barley in it. The 'artisan' sandwich containing chicken, a dollop of haggis and practically raw bacon with huge bits of fat attached was dire. The staff are very pleasant as is the location, but if you are trying to attract people to have lunch, then you really need to provide appetising food, properly prepared. I can show the chef how to make scotch broth from scratch.

"Very comfortable hotel with great staff"

Chasyj, Newcastle 25/09/2016

We stayed as an extended family (5 adults and 2 small children) for one night on our way to the west coast of Scotland and I have to say I was delighted with the hotel. Yes, it's a bit tired but the rooms are very clean and comfortable. The location in the centre of Moffat offers the opportunity for an enjoyable walk through the town before dinner or after breakfast and the car park has ample space. Wd decided to have dinner in the restaurant which was well cooked and very good value (we had the steak and wine offer) and there were reasonable options for the children. The staff were very accommodating and the breakfast the following day was excellent. The hidden gem is the summer lounge and the garden (which includes songs and slide) at the rear of the building where we enjoyed a quiet cup of coffee before setting off.

"Good location"

sjbubble, Warrington, United Kingdom 24/09/2016

First time stayed here was pleasantly surprised with cleanliness and standard! Have stayed at other Best Western hotels in UK but have always been disappointed, however, not this time!! Staff really nice, lovely clean room, large comfy bed, nice decor. Well done Moffat House will stay again!!

"just OK"

EdL, Toronto 22/09/2016

The hotel was on the main street of Moffat. It is a bit dated but so was everything in Moffat. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room felt a bit damp, don't know if it was because of the rainy weather. It was a good thing that we were on the ground floor because there are no elevators. The walls seem to be very thin. There was very little water pressure in the shower head. The wifi was ok but you had to get a new password everyday and for each device, a pain. It cuts in and out at times.

"Somewhat disappointed"

Sheila R, Pembroke, United Kingdom 12/09/2016

Originally booked this hotel as a superior room through and had confirmation of this. Two days later the hotel rang to say there were no superior rooms available!!!! So would we accept a standard room. We had by this time arranged our itinerary so agreed to it. A big mistake! The room was dark, wallpaper peeling off, the bathroom needing updating. The shower was either boiling hot or freezing cold, you needed a degree to get the right temperature, the difference was so finite. The staff were brilliant but very overworked just three of them to manage reception, the bar and wait on tables. We ordered a lasagne each in the bar which was fine along with a portion of chips.... which we are still waiting for. At breakfast they also forgot to take our order so we had to go looking for that. Our sleep was disturbed by the fire alarm going off 3 times during the night and because of the gaps round the door the family from hell in the next room , who obviously thought they were the only ones staying there, we could hear everything. Such a shame as the hotel has a lot of potential but unfortunately the worst Best Western we have ever stayed in. In all fairness I think the superior rooms were a lot better but having stayed in a superior room in Liverpool the previous night for only £20 less value for money was VERY disappointing. The hotel have apologized but they really need to improve their rooms.

"Excellent hospitality"

spencer16, London, United Kingdom 12/09/2016

Comfortable "country house" type hotel ideally situated for the half way point between London and the north of Scotland. A welcoming and friendly staff clearly concerned to provide good service to guests.

"Treat for Mum and Dad"

flymo73, Glasgow 12/09/2016

Booked a two night midweek break for my mum and dad on the 7th and 8th September. They stayed in the self catering cottage and loved everyminute of it. Beautiful location and building with lovely gardens, Food was marvellous, breakfasts were scrumptious and plentiful as my dad said and the service and care by the team and manager Paul was impeccable. As my mum said 'so good we stayed and extra night'

"Really nice bar staff and so very helpful"

holiday116, Wakefield, United Kingdom 12/09/2016

Anytime we visit Moffat we always have lunch in the bar of this hotel. The food is excellent especially the steak and ale pie . The steak is in a very rich sauce, and the meat so tender and not a bit of fat. The only pastry is a large puff pastry lid which so very light We were in on a Sunday this time and normally it is not available as it is carvery day. The staff remembered us and arranged with the chef to make it available. The bar area is very well furnished and comfortable and the service first class. Anytime we are in Scotland via the M74 it is essential to stop over for this meal.

"Great Staff"

Johnnyboy496, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 06/09/2016

Stayed here 2 nights to attend a wedding, and have to say it was a great experience. I have seen prev views re old fashioned, but hey its a country house. Great comfy beds, and its the staff that make this place that bit special. All the staff, check in cleaners, bar staff, waiterfolk, were all chatty and always had a smile Will def be back ( Full scottish breakfast recommended to set you up for the day)

"Nice hotel, good location, worth a visit!"

Jono0303, Halkyn, United Kingdom 05/09/2016

We decided to break up a journey from north wales to St Andrews, Moffat was about half way. The town is lovely with some nice restaurants and shops set in lovely scenery. The hotel has some character, a bit tired in places but that just adds to the character! The staff are very good and friendly, the breakfast was very nice. It made a great starting point of our summer holiday tour of Scotland!

"A little dissappointed"

Elaine R, Sunderland 04/09/2016

We have stayed in this hotel quite a few times. Only once did I have cause for complaint, until now. We stayed for 3 nights. When I called to make my reservation I stated I wanted a 4 poster room. I was offered room 3 which I declined and was the offered room 7, never having seen room 7 I accepted and booked this over the phone. When we arrived check in was swift and we were told where room 7 was. When I entered the room it was huge but the bed looked like it had been a 4 poster but looked as if someone had removed the canopy. Anyway we didn't make a fuss unpacked and started to relax. Later when I went to have a bath I noticed that someone else's hair was all over the tiles in the bathroom. Again I didn't make a fuss and presumed the cleaner would do a better job next day. But no, cleaning is the biggest let down at this hotel. The black mould around the shower was awful as well as seeing other peoples left over hair was disgusting. The only reasonable clean part of the room appeared to be the bed but that creaked every time you moved so didn't get a good sleep in the 3 nights we stayed. On check out I reported all of this and the young man said he would pass on my comments, we paid in full and left. Then I started thinking about how much I had paid and realised I had been charged for a 4 poster room but was given a double. When I contacted the Moffat they confirmed this and said they would refund me the £60.00 difference which they did but it took 2 weeks for the cheque to arrive. This is a lovely hotel but needs serious updating of rooms. The only part of the hotel I have stayed in which was nice is the cottage which was lovely, the rooms in the main hotel are horrible. I can put up with hotel rooms that are dated and in need of refurbishment BUT not dirty rooms and bathrooms. What I will say though is the STAFF are FANTASTIC so pleasant, even the managers serve behind the bar. The food is nice but the menu has changed and has a lot less choice. Also the breakfast is beautifully cooked BUT they are trialling self serve tea and coffee which does not work as the water is not hot enough so staff have to get you hot tea or coffee anyway, so please bring back proper tea and coffee service at breakfast. The gardens are beautiful, so relaxing and quiet. We would stay here again but I would have to insist on a clean room

"Delicious Lunch stopover on way south"

WeeLuv2Travel2, Pennsylvania 01/09/2016

We've stopped for lunch a few times before on our way south and have always enjoyed our lunch. Today we opted for soup and sandwich and were not disappointed. The mushroom soup was really great and had much more than mushrooms in the mix. I also had the grilled Lockerbie cheese on tomato sourdough bread which was also excellent. This is definitely our go to place when heading south. Excellent!

"Enjoyable lunch"

cornpixie, Edinburgh 31/08/2016

On a nice sunny day my wife and I tour around Scotland and invariably have a lunch somewhere. On this occasion we chose to travel to Moffat and had a our lunch at the Moffat House Hotel, sitting in the rear gardens by the 300 year old oak tree. We shared a Balmoral Chicken Brioche which was very filling and tasty including the whisky infused haggis. The wine and beer was also very welcome.

User 31/08/2016

Staff were friendly, room was clean and well attended to. We were there for a wedding and the only negative was that were not told that the bar was going to close and there were a number of us still up from the days wedding. Overall a good and comfortable stay.

"Most disappointing course ever."

granPaisley, Paisley, Scotland 29/08/2016

Travelling a spectacularly scenic route from Berwick-on-Tweed to Paisley we called in passed Moffat for lunch. The Best Western Moffat House Hotel looked promising and my favourite "Cullen Skink" was on the menu! What a disappointment and rip off! A 2.5" square portion of Smoked Haddock, a slice of potato and three small thin portions of leek placed in a plateful of watery salty cream. Perhaps it was the chef's day off or his interpretation (or "guess") of this well known Scottish culinary delight. The very pleasant serving waitress was rushed off her feet and my complaint rests solely in the kitchen.

"Good, but could do better"

User 28/08/2016

This is a good hotel with a very well appointed restaurant.A basically good meal was spoilt by a stale "biscuit" served with an excellent paté. I would like to see more attention to detail and staff who ask for feedback must learn how to deal with this even when it is negative.

"Fantastic Stay."

PaulOnHol, Glasgow 28/08/2016

Just returned from an overnight stay at this wonderful hotel. There area few places to eat out close to the hotel but believe me you would mad not to dine at the Moffat House Hotels "Oaktree" Restaurant. The setting is beautiful the service top notch and the food is absolutely delicious. In fact during our meal my wife and I heard "complements to the chef" coming from our fellow diners on more than one occasion. The breakfast was to die for, full Scottish made with top quality ingredients and cooked to perfection. We stayed in the "cottage" a self contained apartment annexed to the main hotel. The cottage has two huge bedrooms (with huge beds) lounge, kitchen (fully equipped) bathroom (with whirlpool bath, shower over) and a patio area adjacent to the beautiful hotel gardens. We found the bed super comfy and had a great sleep. The cottage was spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. We definitely be returning to this gem of a hotel. Highly recommended.

"No hot water in the morning!"

santalucia26, Warrington, United Kingdom 27/08/2016

We stayed here on the way to a wedding. We were in a ground floor room and I commented to my husband that I couldn't believe how quiet it was considering it was just off the road. That was until 1am! Then the people in the room above us sounded as if they were having a party. Very noisy till 2.30 am. My daughters were in a room in the main house and didn't have any hot water in their bathroom the next morning. Needs a bit of modernising but our room was comfortable enough.

"trip to festival"

Dianne S A, Warrington, United Kingdom 24/08/2016

Moffet house was a great stopping point . Not the most sophisticated but warm and fabulous gardens . Lovely old house ,in need of investment into the site as it has huge potential. and character . The town is unspoilt and has good local shops and eating places .

"A friendly welcome for people and pets."

Gordon S, Canterbury, United Kingdom 24/08/2016

My grandson, dog and I were breaking our journey north and for the first time in Moffat were lucky enough to book the Moffat House Hotel. The room was spacious and spotless, the staff were brilliant - they set breakfast for us in the lounge bar and even brought a bowl of water for the dog. We tried to book for the return journey but unfortunately they were fully booked - but we will definitely be back

"A great location, lovely grounds and fab staff."

OrdinaryJoeandCo, West Wales 23/08/2016

We stayed here recently and had a good sized double room with en suite facilities. The staff were great and this is key for this establishment. I think its far to say that the hotel is a little tired, faded around the edges, you will see similar comments from other previous guests. It did not distract from our experience but in truth this was down to the staff who were charming and helpful. We had a room only deal, breakfast would have added another 12.50 per head. We felt that the additional 25 pound this would have added to our hotel room bill would have been expensive.

"Homely, quiet."

Desmond S, Windsor and Maidenhead, United Kingdom 23/08/2016

Stayed here quite a few times before. Needs quite a lot of renovation etc, which they are addressing it seems. Comfortable and quiet, good parking, friendly; perhaps a bit light on staff. Good town location with many shops nearby and a good golf course. Conveniently located just off the A 74M, so good to break a journey further north like Sutherland, which is where I m headed. A good experience if fairly basic, but clean andcomfortable

"Wedding venue"

Peter F, Dumfries, United Kingdom 17/08/2016

Our son and his fiancé chose this hotel as the venue for their wedding recently. The hotel offered them the complete package. Guests were able to stay in the hotel the night before and the night after the wedding. Staff were very attentive and helpful. Their friendliness made the whole event so very special. The facilities were clean and tidy, easily accessible and well appointed. Reception, booking in and room allocation was smooth and quick. Food was excellent, good sized portions, hot and tasty. Watering staff were smart, knowledgeable and quietly efficient. The organisation of guests to keep the event to time was down quietly and effectively. The bar staff worked tirelessly to try and keep up with orders - nothing was too much trouble. Rooms were nicely appointed, clean and tidy. However, one or two guests thought their room decor was getting a little bit tired. Ours was fine. Breakfast was well run with a wide range of choices well presented with ever helpful staff on hand to assist as required and to take orders. A very pleasant experience in a beautiful location helping the wedding experience to be something very special.

"Great location but hotel needs updating"

Erinhf, Essex, United Kingdom 16/08/2016

The hotel is in a lovely location in the centre of Moffat. We booked a standard double for two nights. The room could really do with being re decorated. There was wallpaper peeling off the walls, the wardrobe door was broke, there was mould on the wall in the bathrooms and the bath mat was covered in mould and needed to be replaced. The carpets on the main stairs was also well worn and old. This hotel could be so beautiful but at the moment looks quite gloomy inside and really needs some maintenance and updating. We really hope this can get resolved because apart from this we had a really lovely stay. Food is nice, and staff are friendly.

"Moffat is a good stop over point on a trip either going north or south for Scotland"

spudlicker, King's Lynn, United Kingdom 13/08/2016

Booked this last minute before starting my journey, arrived 61/2 hours later in the evening. On arrival I was informed that I had achieved a room up grade, what really happened (in my opinion) hotel fully booked so stuff him in what ever is left! I got what called the cottage, do not get me wrong this was a great facility for the night when realistically only a bed was required. If you are a family needing a place for the night or a few days to explore then this cottage is just ideal, two good size rooms, large bathroom with bath that has water jets (wow), kitchenette with all facilities including a good size table four could fit round, top this off with a conservatory fitted with 2 x sofas and large TV. Only disappointment was I couldn't make good use of it. Breakfast was included in my price but if you had to pay its a whopping £25.00 per person, ruddy rip off. Moffats a great town with lots of cafes and eating places, I guess you could a good breakfast for a hell of a lot less.

"Poor attention to customers and detail"

User 12/08/2016

We came in tonight for a meal. We ordered at 6.30pm at 7.10pm I noticed everyone who had come on after us had been served so enquired. The waitress then came over to explain our order hadn't gone through could she take it again? Very poor that it took over 40 minutes of us sitting quite obviously to staff we had not had our food yet others had. The food was lovely and came out prompt after second order. The toilets had no toilet roll so yes poor and shame as I have stayed here and eaten here before but attention to detail missing. We ordered extra drinks has waited so long and think they could have at the very least compensated us.

"Excellent and Friendly"

PrestonTraveller60, Preston 10/08/2016

A good hotel in the centre of Moffat. The friendly staff and good accommodation really made our stay. The food did not disappoint either and If you include dinner in your stay and it's on the menu you must try the "Surf & Turf" (Scallops & Venison) cooked to perfection mmmm!

"Faultless Staff... room horrid"

Gillian F, Bathgate, United Kingdom 08/08/2016

I want to begin by thanking the Staff at the Best Western House Hotel for being outstanding. Myself and my husband were attending a family wedding arriving on the Friday and staying till the Sunday. We had an evening meal on the Friday night which was fantastic really enjoyed our meal. Breakfast both mornings were delicious freshly made and what appeared to be good quality fresh ingredients. All staff were pleasant and can not be faulted. However..... As previously mentioned we were staying for two nights paying £110 per night for bed and breakfast ( breakfast £12.50ph) so room being £85 a night. Room was tired and very poor standard. Dampness could be seen on the walls and dealing, moguls in the bathroom and cracked tiles. Lighting was very poor which did not help when trying to get ready on the morning of the wedding. A number of other family members also stayed over and their rooms were of a much higher standard than ours and paying the same. Room was small luckily we weren't in it for too long. Did not wish to make a big deal out it and complain given it was a family wedding however I think this is something that requires a great deal of attention. Have stayed and far better standard of room for a lot less money. Only thing that lets you down.

"Moffat Must"

Ruraljudge, West Lothian 08/08/2016

Stayed here for 2 nights at a wedding and although a little bit dated the beds were so comfortable and the staff could not do enough for us. The food was excellent with a good variety and great breakfast menu. Thanks to all who made this a great weekend.

"Lovely break"

Deborah G, Haltwhistle, United Kingdom 08/08/2016

Phoned directly to hotel offered better last minute deal than on line. Set in beautiful grounds which was great to sit outside with plenty of room for our little dog to run around. Food good too both breakfast and evening meal. Staff very friendly. Rooms smart and clean.

"Needs Refurbishment"

Honest-Jim, Bath, United Kingdom 04/08/2016

We have passed this hotel on many occasions on trips from SW England to Scotland, and always liked the look of it. It is set in a beautiful location in this very pleasant town. On this occasion, we had a trip to Aberdeen, and decided this would make an ideal stopover. The room was very disappointing - and we had an upgraded room! The furniture looked old and tired and the paintwork looked as if it been undertaken by a not very competent DIY person. The en-suite bathroom was no better with cracks in the tiles, dreadful paintwork and the electric shower was really poor. Also be aware that there is no lift; my wife and I are ‘getting on a bit' and found carting our bags up the stairs a bit of a struggle. On the positive side, we found staff members to be very helpful. I did point out my observations about the room on check out, and was assured a refurbishment programme was underway. It would be worth checking this before committing to staying. We had breakfast at the hotel. It was excellent and again wait staff were really good. It is this which encouraged me to lift the marking to three stars. Having stayed recently at the Best Western at Kendal (which was great in every way) I found this offering disappointing. I would not stay here again unless the place had been given a thorough refurbishment. The potential exists to make this a really great hotel.

"Comfortable stay"

MaryLou24, Basingstoke 02/08/2016

Stayed here a few years ago, just returning due to more work in the area. The hotel is a little tired inside now since I last stayed here. Room was clean and comfortable but dated. No lift so heavy work bag was a struggle upstairs. Food was nice.. good choice of traditional Scottish fair in the restaurant and home comforts in the bar. Parking was a little restricted. WiFi is available throughout the hotel which was good.

"Lovely place"

Tighe12, Brierley Hill, United Kingdom 02/08/2016

We stayed here for 2 nights as my sister was getting married here.. On arrival we were dealt with quickly and diverted to our room.. On entering our room in was clean, tidy and really spacious.. We had one of the family rooms and there was more than enough to space for all four of us.. We also took our little chihuahua along as its a pet friendly hotel.. The hotel gardens are beautifully kept.. On the day of the wedding we were made to feel really special by all the hotel staff, they took care of anything we needed.. Our sit down meal was beautiful, and served red hot.. The little village in which the hotel is set is lovely too, everything u need right on your doorstep.. We would deffo recommend this hotel and we would surely return.

Carl W, Dudley, United Kingdom 31/07/2016

This is a wonderful place for your wedding. We came over 200 miles to our friends wedding and the journey was well worth it. The hotel is beautiful the rooms huge and very clean, the staff and management are amazing can't do enough for you. I have just one complaint and that the bar prices need to match the rest of the town at nearly £1 a pint more it's ridiculous. Would I stay here again. Without a doubt yes but drink elsewhere.

"Lovely building and lovely staff - but given the non veggie burger!"

User 30/07/2016

After walking around Moffat to find somewhere to eat we settled on Moffat House Hotel for an evening meal. Ordered the veggie burger -- and was given a real meat one! Initially I assumed it was simply a particularly authentic type of meat substitute but by the end of the meal it was clear that I had actually eaten real meat. I'm sure it was a one off genuine mistake by the otherwise lovely waitress but as a vegetarian you can understand my distress!

Tersam S, Aberdeen, United Kingdom 25/07/2016

Last minute overnight stay as needed a break from driving. Room was fairly priced and comfy. Big, comfortable 4 poster bed and well stocked hospitality tray. Clean and airy room. Good sized bathroom. Staff friendly and helpful. Had a drink in the bar. Pricing average for a hotel. Comfy sofas to sit on.

"Excellent Friendly Hotel"

GMEB1971, Glasgow, United Kingdom 24/07/2016

4 of us stayed here while in the area for a triathlon. We stayed in the self catering cottage which was brilliant. Lounge area, kitchen, access to a patio and the hotel gardens. Lots of towels, Sky TV, tea and coffee making facilities etc. The hotel is right on the Main Street and has it's own car park. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. What made this hotel special was the staff. Best customer service I've ever had. They were so friendly and helpful and always cheery. A real pleasure to stay here and will definitely stay again when back in Moffat. Thank you.

"Comfortable & friendly"

JandJ B, Nottingham, United Kingdom 18/07/2016

Stayed here one night on the way to visit family. Arrived about 2.20 in the afternoon and we were greeted pleasantly by a gentleman and given our room keys. When we entered it was obvious the room hadn't been made up. Went back to reception and explained about the room, the gentleman was surprised and apologised profusely. He offered us drinks in the bar as an apology while the room was sorted but we were quite happy to go for a walk in the town. Came back 1/2 an hour later and again he apologised and offered to carry our bags to the room. We really appreciated his sincerity and how he handled the error, to us we don't expect everything to go right when staying in hotels but great customer service on dealing with a problem is a must. The room itself was spacious and comfortable, breakfast in the morning was excellent quality and plentiful, hubby had full Scottish and enjoyed all of it, I had eggs benedict which was great and came on crumpet instead of muffin which is how I'm going to have it in future as I thought it was tastier, the 2 eggs were poached to perfection. Lovely stay, lovely staff. Thank you.

"Hotel or motel?"

von582015, Staymonth=8 17/07/2016

Stayed for one night aftet a great days golf on the coast, and arrived at half 7. We checked in and were told that we were in the annexe ; a wave of the hand and "On your right as you leave through the door" pointed us back out to the car park. We trundled around to find that our room was located at the extreme perimeter facing the road with entry directly from the car park and not in sight of the main building. Once inside, the room was spacoius with the bathroom outside the bedroom. We never quite figured out the 2 adjoining doors to the bathroom corridor as they were not marked on the fire escape floor plan. Then we opted to go to the restaurant for dinner. We stayed in the bar as it was busy (always a good sign) and the restaurant was empty. The menu didnt list any allergens and being coeliac I did as requested and checked with the waitress my menu choices. Having sorted that out, I was disappointed to have my meal served with battered onion rings that, on asking, were confirmed to contain wheat flour. The steak was cooked as requested. However, we didnt order dessert or stay for breakfast because of a different issue. During our meal a lovely adorable puppy came in and the man behind the bar did what anyone would do, knelt down to fuss and pet the dog. Then pro.ptly returned to the bar and continued to serve customers. This hygiene oversight really put a dampener on an otherwise enjoyable stay.

Dear Customer Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at our property. On behalf of our entire team, I would like to apologise for not exceeding your expectations. Your satisfaction is important to me. Im very sorry you feel I gave you 'the wave of my hand' as a direction, I can assure you this was not my intention, I was clearly guiding you towards the south courtyard building which I have done so for many years without confusion or complaint. The internal doors have signs saying 'no entry' as these have been sealed and are no longer in use, your nearest fire exit is the entrance door which is on the fire plan in the room. I would like to point out that immediately after petting the puppy i went straight to the bar as you agree and washed my hands in the sink below the bar, this cannot be seen from the customer side of the bar which is why you missed it, being a dog friendly hotel we see and come into contact with hundreds of dogs each year and it is common practice for all staff to immediately wash hands after any contact. I sincerely apologies for the onion rings, We are currently updating our menus to clearly label all ingredients to suit each individual dietary requirement to try to prevent this happening in future. Once again thanks you for your feedback and for your loyalty to us. If I can provide any assistance, please don't hesitate to contact me directly at 01683 220039. A great country house hotel in an interesting little town with an excellent menu range available -especially the steak night deal on a Friday but stay for the amazing breakfasts as well. We had booked an overnight stop on our way up to Kilchrenan by Taynuilt from London. We found the staff very helpful - they let me into their office to catch up on important work emails and I could hear them putting themselves out for other guests who came to ask advice or made enquiries. Breakfast was ample and good qulaity and the price charged for the throom was commensurate with other hotels if not less expensive. Room was fine an clean. The only reason for omitting the 5th star was that I had the sense of there being less than good communication at times between staff which caused minor problems and some puzzled faces from clients as the could see the staff were very happy to help and concerned that customers had a pleasant time yet silly little things were gong wrong which you would not expect with a positive attitude from the staff on duty and the good quality food produced. Absolutely fine for us for one night. Thank you Staff for all the help you provided for me..

"Leaving party for a colleague"

User 09/07/2016

We decided to book a suite in the same hotel as my colleague had his retirement party. We had a great night, with a great atmosphere. The staff were all helpful and friendly and with excellent service. The food was good value for money, well presented and of good quality, both for breakfast and evening meal.

"Attentive staff team"

LadyA55, Kendal, United Kingdom 03/07/2016

Our room was very spacious and pleasantly decorated. All details had been addressed hair dryer which wasn't tethered to a wall but could be used where needed. Tea and coffee making facilities. The room was warm and welcoming and the bed was extremely comfortable. We ate both dinner and breakfast both meals were beautifully presented and well cooked, the portions were quite large. The only downside was a grubby looking shower curtain. The staff were extremely polite, attentive and helpful.

"Sadly this wasn't our best stay"

User 25/06/2016

Stayed at the hotel in 2005 and loved it so much we returned this year and was really looking forward to it. Booked a room in the main building with views over the garden ( well in advance as was for a special birthday treat) and got an annex room overlooking the car park. Had to complain about the noise from other guests at 2am . Told staff of our concerns but didn't offer another room or discount so we only stayed 1 night . One plus - the breakfast was excellent.

"A big welcome for the dogs!"

Christine D, York, United Kingdom 19/06/2016

We did not know that our dogs could join us and when we found out we brought them in and they were well treated! Humans are well looked after too the service was very efficient and the staff were so friendly and helpful nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was superb and so tasty. I had Salmon cooked 3 ways with strawberry salad so good and my partner had steak cooked medium rare and it was cooked perfectly. We look forward to going back again in September when we are back on our holidays again. We only ate here but from what we could see the Hotel part was just as friendly.

"Country town night stop"

derekferguson5, Formby 18/06/2016

Arrival and check in was smooth friendly and very polite. After leaving our luggage in room, which incidentally was very nice. Big and airy to the rear on first floor. Everything we needed was there. Bar was warm and welcoming and we had a large Sauvignon blanch and a pint of IPA.. Very nice after drive from Formby. Dinner in bar was fine and good value for money. Sleep time, bed a bit hard with hard pillows. Breakfast very nice although finally disorganised. Had to search out a waitress to order, then eventually when tea and coffee arrived, no cups and saucers, toast arrived with the milk we asked for with breakfast some 10 minutes later, No side plates.. A bit disorganised. On arrival at next destination, we noticed that the bar bill was £19.95 for the two lunchtime drinks. I find that to be a bit steep, after all a full bottle of the Sauvignon blanch from memory was £14.95.... Need to check my bar bills more carefully... All in a a good hotel.. Good standards. Would we stay there again? YES we probably will...

"Family wedding"

User 14/06/2016

Great hotel, lovely rooms, great for kids. Staff fantastic and food just brilliant. Highly recommend. Grounds are beautiful. Nothing bad to say. They even let us have an earlier check in all the staff were lovely. Bride and groom appeared to enjoy their stay also. The cottages attached looked beautiful.

Jan P, Galashiels, United Kingdom 14/06/2016

We visited Moffat house back in January as a potential wedding location.we loved everything about the hotel and decided that day to book our wedding. We stayed in the cottage for two days,it's beautiful! Very spacious and you even have your own little back garden with patio and a little games room for the kids. The food and service was outstanding.I visited 4 different rooms within the hotel (mums, sisters, inlaws and friends) and everyone of them were lovely. All our wedding guests have commented on the staffs outstanding service and the quality of the food.I am gutted its all over but owe a lot to the staff Moffat house for helping to make it the best day of my life! "Wedding stay"

User 10/06/2016

We stayed here for 2 nights while a friend got married at Auchen castle, nice clean room, friendly staff and good value for £80 night could probably do with a lick of paint/modernisation here and there but overall good, breakfast was ok,(better value over the road at the little tea room) Overall good ????

"Better than expected"

Roger D, Bideford, United Kingdom 08/06/2016

We were a little unsure when we booked this hotel for four nights as we stayed there several years ago and were not over impressed. However, we need not have been concerned. Our reception was friendly and efficient, and indeed the staff were excellent and very hard working throughout. Our room was within the original building and large, clean and comfortable. The food was good if somewhat restricted in choice, and the conservatory restaurant was fine. There was adequate parking available, and the sizeable garden is well maintained and peaceful.

"Iceberg Hotel"

Kimberley M, Haydock, United Kingdom 05/06/2016

Over night stay Hotel needs a lick of paint friendly staff nice dining / breakfast room , breakfast was very good . When we arrived 4pm ish the room was cold we turned the rads on no heat the heating was off ,we pointed this out to reception nothing happened later we tried to have a shower just warm water didn't bother . next morning room was hot , water was hot maybe they had a problem, but it should be up to the guest to decide what temp a room should be . Nice old building lovely gardens to the rear .

"Tired but friendly "

EHO1, Banbury 03/06/2016

I guess for an £80 overnight stop you shouldn't expect too much. The room allocated was on 2nd floor with no lift which was changed at the suggestion of the receptionist to first floor as I had a dodgy back. The room itself is large with a 4poster bed but tired old furniture slightly frayed carpets and no desk to work at with rather dingy lighting. It was clean and as I say the staff were friendly but they need a program to modernise the rooms, upgrade the bathrooms etc. I was the sole person in the bar.

"Extremely bad experience"

Gordon K, Dunfermline, United Kingdom 24/05/2016

My niece flew from Australia to have a wedding blessing. Ten weeks ago we booked a table for sixteen for dinner in the garden room. Eight weeks ago we attended the hotel for lunch and was informed that the booking was confirmed. 20th may my wife and friend had coffee in the hotel and was informed all was good for the next night. Party of sixteen attended after blessing in evening to be informed no idea what you are talking about(what booking) Duty manager not got a clue, the icing on the cake his statement"we might be able to fit you in",with my niece in tears we left. An unprofessional attitude shown,we will never return again,

"Friendly Hotel"

Shirley B, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 16/05/2016

Just back from a 2 night stay to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Stayed in room 2 which was nice but a bit tired looking but very comfortable and quiet. The bathroom could also benefit from an upgrade. The breakfast room was lovely with an outlook to the garden, it helped that the weather was glorious. All the staff we came in contact with were polite and professional. Evening meal taken in the hotel on the Sunday night was very well cooked and presented. Breakfasts excellent. Would recommend as a good base to discover a lovely part of the country.

"Overnight stay"

Stephen C, Horwich, United Kingdom 09/05/2016

Greeted by polite professional staff we were given an excellent clean room with views across the fields and gardens at the rear of the hotel, the evening meal was good and taken in a pleasant restaurant adjoining the garden. After a good night's sleep we ate a well-cooked hearty breakfast, all in all what you would expect from a Best Western, certainly the best hotel I have stayed at in Moffat.

"Would definitely recommend"

kcham1, Cramlington, United Kingdom 06/05/2016

We enjoyed our stay in one of the family rooms I believe it was room 21. We had two children aged 3 and 4 with us. We checked in just after two and our room wasn't quite ready but that was ok as we didn't want to go straight to the room anyway. The room was clean and cosy we had two single beds and a large king size bed (2 singles pushed together) . Our bed was big enough that when our daughter woke and came in beside us we still had plenty room for ourselves. Our children were a little excited when they first came in and they ran about a little which must have been a little loud for our guests below as I believe they banged on the ceiling. This couldn't really be helped but I guess guests in the room below should be advised that they might hear children above with it being a family room. Breakfast was lovely and the staff were friendly and helpful. They made a slight mix up on breakfast but I didn't mind so didn't say anything. I think if I had it would have been quickly sorted though. We had made an appointment to discuss our wedding in advance and this has to be delayed by an hour as they had a wedding on that day. Again it didn't matter as we got to enjoy a walk in the local town. The staff were really busy setting up for the wedding that day and they seemed to really pay attention to detail and it looked great. We booked our wedding there for next year and look forward to going back !! ??

"Light break stop"

melbourne3010, Brussels, Belgium 06/05/2016

Stopped off this morning at 0955 on our way down from Edinburgh. Just wanted a cold drink and catch our breath! A welcome as we entered the hotel, and a good fire set in the lounge and an enjoyable break. Hotel looked extremely clean and well presented. We have been calling here regularly over the past 30 years and have rarely, if ever, been disappointed. It would seem that there is a new management team on site perhaps?? Anyway keep up these standards, and you will not get any dissatisfied customers. Well done.

"Comfortable hotel in Moffat"

Tony K, St. Albans, United Kingdom 05/05/2016

This is a lovely building and the hotel has a very pleasant ambiance. We stayed just one night as we were travelling from the north of Scotland to southern England. It was a very comfortable stay in a pleasant bedroom. We didn't have much interaction with the staff but they seemed efficient. Breakfast seemed pricey at £25 for 2 so went to one of the many cafes in the town.

"Very Pleasant Experience!"

Janice H, Lochgilphead, United Kingdom 27/04/2016

Had a lovely stay here recently. The room was great, the food good and the staff very friendly and attentive. Highly recommend a stay here and Moffat is a lovely little place. We had room 18 which had a four poster bed - great!

"Great garden room"

Anne E, Elgin, United Kingdom 16/04/2016

Welcome is warm but room was cold on arrival. Room 10 was a bit dated, but clean apart from toilet bowl, which we cleaned ourselves! Swags and tails look out of place now. Lovely old building, but best Western needs to spend money north of the border! The staff deserve it if not the customer. The food was lovely, and service top notch. Nothing too much trouble.

"An enjoyable return visit"

901karen, Pulborough, United Kingdom 14/04/2016

We have stayed here before and always enjoy the friendly and relaxed atmosphere. The hotel is clean and comfortable and some improvements to the en-suite bathrooms and showers have been made since our last visit. Stunning landscapes in easy reach.

"Spent lovely two nights here in March"

Mary S, Cumnock, United Kingdom 13/04/2016

What a lovely break here chilling out! The friendly staff made our stay so enjoyable . The food is really good Very large portions. My sister and I had a lovely bright room looking into the garden. Breakfast was a treat on a plate. I would have liked perhaps some grapefruit but really did not need it. We will certainly be back for another break. Thank you x

awkeyethenoo, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 11/04/2016

A short-notice stay, a good deal, breaking a journey. If we'd paid full price this review would be much, much more strident but no matter the price a room should be clean (the bathroom wasn't), the mattress should be fit for purpose and not collapsed or corrugated, the WiFi should work well (it didn't) a mug should not be so cracked it leaks, housekeeping staff should not wake you by chatting outside the room and it should be understood that "Y' alright there, sir?" is not an appropriate greeting, especially from the back of reception to avoid a twenty foot walk....

"Four poster room...."

A-Hitchens, Rotherham, United Kingdom 09/04/2016

After spending the weekend at Auchen castle we decided to stay in Moffat for two nights, we called in around 11am to ask about check in as we were shattered, told by reception check in was 2pm....arrived at 2.05pm to check in and was told our room wasn't ready. The room was eventually ready at 2.40pm so not the best start. Got into the room and it was cold, turned on the heater that was fine, the room was a little dated but still lovely with a nice for poster bed. so after settling down and putting the TV on it started..... the room above I believe was a family room, it sounded like a very loud thudding caused by running from end to end of the room for a solid 3 hours (I know this is not the hotels fault) After not been able to sleep we decided to see about another room, we changed to a different room that was smaller, lovely warm and quiet, this was a lesser room and we were politely told their was no charge for technically a downgrade, very kind of them. although as said we had a decent nights sleep. unfortunately we moved back down to the four poster room the following morning. Nice big bath, hard to get in and out of if your my 5ft 2 wife haha, quite a loud room you could hear people at all hours, the pebbles crunching when cars parking, very loud in general. The next morning we got woken up at 7am clearly by all the workmen/business men using the hotel. £12.50 for breakfast each morning I thought was a little bit steep the café over the road does a lovely omelette for £5 Average stay, helpful staff and clean rooms just a little busy and loud for my liking, I know the hotel cant hep this. upon checkout we were not asked about our stay nor given the opportunity to voice our concerns I normally like to give great reviews but on this occasion find this to be an average stay. Wi-Fi No good had to sit in a certain part of the room.

shonaf186487, Aberdeen, United Kingdom 08/04/2016

The staff were friendly BUT....we ordered the Friday steak night deal . First we got the wrong wine having asked for Shiraz we got Merlot ( we did tell the guy in charge but said it was ok and we would drink it)then our meal was delivered to someone else's table and as they didn't notice straightaway we had to wait for it to be cooked again. We asked for stilton sauce as an accompaniment and have to say it didn't really taste of stilton( again we mentioned this to the guy in charge). Then to top it all we would have been overcharged, not by a lot but that's not the point, if I hadn't noticed. I would have expected to have been given discount after all the mishaps rather than have to point out the error. So overall really disappointed.

"Wonderful place to stay"

lara_wNewcastle, newcastle 04/04/2016

The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Loved our room which included clean and very good facilities. Very dog friendly which was a big plus for us. The hotel was centrally located in Moffat. Would reccomend to all.

"Anniversary break"

Menscryfa, Doncaster, South Yorkshire 02/04/2016

We have visited Moffat many times and chose the Moffat House Hotel as an anniversary treat for my parents. On arrival we were greeted by the very friendly manager who gave us all the information about the hotel and directions to our rooms. I was pleased to find that they had reserved a ground floor room for my parents. As I had requested, Our rooms were in an annexe next to the hotel, were very spacious, clean and well appointed. Our bed was huge and comfortable, the bathroom was clean, the only down side was the low pressure in the shower, but hot water was plentiful. Plenty of clean towels and the room was warm. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed sitting in the lounge and relaxing. The bar is well stocked, reasonably priced (for a hotel) we ate in the restaurant on the first night, the food was excellent, locally sourced and well presented. The restaurant has lovely views over the grounds, with an inviting outdoor seating area for warmer weather. Breakfast was delicious and very generous, my husband had the full scottish breakfast and it beat him, I can highly recommend the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, delicious. The staff were all very friendly and made a fuss of my parents when they found out it was their anniversary. They helped to make our stay very comfortable, the manager even reimbursed the 10% discount which should have been applied as a special offer for booking to eat in the restaurant, the manager was very apologetic and was sorted with no fuss. Moffat is a lovely place and we.would definately return to this hotel.

"Some good points but mainly not so good"

Telsvu, Lancashire, United Kingdom 28/03/2016

On arrival and after checking in we were directed to room 22 in an annex to the main part of the hotel. First impressions count for a lot and I'm afraid to say that they weren't good as just yards from the door into our room an old Christmas tree had been dumped across the ground in front of a wall.On entering the room which was a little tired and drab I checked the mattresses as I always do.One of them was fine but the second was in terminal decline with with a visible hollow in its middle.I complained to reception,a replacement mattress for that size of bed was not available so I had to accept one from a pull out bed which was OK but no better than that. After having had a walk around Moffat We returned to the hotel for a drink. I had a bottle of bitter and my wife a cappuccino. On checking out the next morning I found that this had cost me £8.70, that's correct £8.70 - a complete rip off. Later I went for a shower but the water pressure was so low that calling it a "shower" could be offending the trades description act. The good points -The excellent breakfast which was both plentiful and made up of good quality produce. Also the young waiter who served us at breakfast,I think he was called Kyle, was excellent. Nothing was to much trouble for him and it was definitely service with a smile. He almost salvaged a three star review but even though I was using a Groupon voucher the package was quoted as being worth a tad over £115 (B & B and a bottle of Prosecco) and based on that vluation I'm afraid I cannot score my experience as being any better than two stars.

"A wee rest...."

User 27/03/2016

Cut it short..this was a Christmas present to my daughter and her hubby they had to cancel and because of work asked us if we wanted to go ...we love Moffat usually going in Gertie our motor home we never think of going to a hotel...well what can I say ...we where made really welcome so was Haggis the dog ..The room No 17 was lovely and bright and spotlessly clean ..this was a Groupon deal and didn't know what to expect ...we had the steak deal for tea it was perfect ...the breakfast had a great choice didn't know what to pick so went for the full Scottish ...perfect ...the staff well....thanks Pearl Ian thanks all of you for making this weekend so perfect we will be back ....

"Nice hotel "

Olaivas, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 26/03/2016

Stopped overnight on way to Loch Lomond. Moffat is a lovely little town in south Scotland, worth a visit in its own right with lots is little walks about and about 25 minutes from Grey Mares Tail... Another nice walk. The hotel was clean, on the high street, and has its own little restaurant situated in a conservatory overlooking a nice garden (breakfast served in this room as well). Nice, clean, room. Good breakfast. Would stay again.

"Favourite in Moffat"

elizabeth c, Glasgow, United Kingdom 24/03/2016

Have been to this hotel many times. Moffat is a lovely little town and we visit at least once a year in all seasons. One thing you can be guaranteed here is good food, excellent service in a brilliant setting. The gardens at the back are really pretty. Weren't staying at the hotel but came every day for our afternoon coffee and delicious shortbread and for drinks in the evenings. Have had a meal here on several occasions and have never been disappointed. People we spoke to were surprised it was also dog friendly. Can sit in absolute comfort with your pooch in front of the fire in large comfortable sofas. Can highly recommend it.

"2 night stay"

Sonnyboy1Fife, Fife 24/03/2016

We went to Moffat House Hotel for 2 nights on a Groupon deal so when we arrived at hotel and was met with very friendly staff, when we got to our room on the top floor 2 flights of stairs 16 steps 1st flight 26 steps 2nd flight but we were a little disappointed with the room only because it was very dark by only having 1 small window but apart from that the room was very clean and warm with everything you need, when we went to restaurant we were not disappointed the meals were fantastic the service was perfect, I can recommend this Hotel very highly, The area and the town of Moffat is very good and plenty shops and other local attractions well worth a visit,

"Excellent Breakfast, lovely staff, great value "

User 23/03/2016

My partner and I went here twice within the space of four weeks from a one night overnight, both on a Groupon £56 deal. On the first visit they had double booked our room, so we were given a free update to the four poster room which costs an extra £20. On arrival on the first day we were given a free bottle of Prosecco, which was lovely and defiantly not the cheap type. On the second visit we were given a bottle of lovely house red as they had run out of Prosecco. We only used this as a base to explore Moffat, and ate out on both occasions, which in hindsight was a mistake as the food in the Italian we went to was not very nice to say the least. So going by the breakfast we should have stayed at the Hotel. The breakfast was excellent, it was cooked fresh to order, served on warm plates and breakfast was nice and hot and fresh, none of that lukewarm buffet stuff you get all over the place. Our rooms were good, nothing too fancy but spacious and ticked the box for what we wanted. A nice quiet with really friendly staff who were genuinely interested in helping you. Would definitely recommend this to anyone.

"Return visit"

RachelWirral, wirral 22/03/2016

Pleased to return at last after a break of 17 months to what used to be a favourite hotel. Yes, the friendly welcome and helpful still are still part of the establishment. The Chef has moved to the Buccleuch Arms, which is well worth visiting for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Highly recommended. Dinner at the Moffat House Hotel was not only excellent, especially the steak, but Linsey was extremely helpful. The breakfast food itself was good ,the staff helpful and friendly, but the breakfast description on the menu did not resemble what appeared on the plate and had to be returned for the salmon to be put on and even then it did not match the description . Crumpet did not appear nor was it dressed with chives. A bit dissapointing. Tea and coffee orders were assumed , rather than being asked what we would like. Continental breakfast again, not as described on menu. Prices were fair, room was warm but bathroom rather dated. Excellent domestic staff . What a shame the computer was not in use in the library during our visit. Still, atmosphere and garden views are balm for the weary soul and restorative. Front has greatly improved and the lounge is very relaxing. Staff mean well and are very accommodating and pleasant. Will return.

"Slightly disappointed"

apollo15637, North Yorkshire, United Kingdom 20/03/2016

A lovely friendly welcome on our arrival and directed to our room which was in an annexe. The room was huge, the bed big enough for a family of six and space enough for a party but definitely in need of some updating. Our disappointment started at 10pm when, what we could only assume was a boiler, kicked in and was louder than a Boeing 747 landing next to our room. The noise lasted just over 25 minutes and ended just before I was going to complain. The next challenge in the morning was the shower and my advice to any future occupant of room 20 would be to have a bath, far less stressful and you're guaranteed to get wet! I am sure that had our room been in the main hotel our experience would have been different it was just unfortunate that, for us, the hotel did not live up to our expectations.

Laura M, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 15/03/2016

"Needs updating "

daveyboe, Rothesay, United Kingdom 14/03/2016

Stayed here over the weekend for our anniversary. Our room was one of the cottages outside which was ok. The bathroom is very dated with poor taps and a dripping shower. Food in the restaurant was delicious and we couldn't fault it. The hotel is a lovely building in a beautiful village and we will go back there.

"Fab weekend"

"A great break."

User 06/03/2016

The staff make this hotel worth a visit along with the excellent food. Huge portions! The steak pie was the best I have ever tasted. Beautifully cooked breakfast also. We had a very spacious room with a four poster bed. Unfortunately our friends had a very pokey room which really needed redecorating but it didn't spoil their enjoyment of the hotel. Located right in the heart of the town. Hope to revisit.

"Great Locati"

Lorna S, Aberdeen, United Kingdom 01/03/2016

Definitely the place to go if you want a break away from everything. The hotel was clean and comfortable, the food was superb and the service second to none, it's in a beautiful setting and even though it's in the town centre it's extremely quiet.

"Felt like we were visiting our friends......."

April C, Blue Hill, Maine, United States 27/02/2016

A return visit for us with our last stay one year ago. Upon checking in I found Zoe behind the front desk. She remembered me and the reason for our visit last year. She was so welcoming and helped arrange for a Valentine's Day special dessert delivery to our room. We love the cottage room. Plenty of space for our family of 4 and the flexibility of having the kitchen is wonderful. We had breakfast in the dining room every morning and it was wonderful. Ian was very helpful with his local knowledge and guidance on activities. We had dinner in the restaurant one night and it was delicious with great service. When it was time to check out we felt like we were leaving our friends behind. We love the quaint town of Moffat and highly recommend the Best Western Moffat House Hotel!

"Good hotel in a great location"

richardhS7138XN, Prescot 22/02/2016

This was our third stay at this hotel. We booked via a groupon deal, but had to pay a little extra for our children to stay. We booked in the large family room, which has plenty of space for a family of 4. The hotel and rooms are very clean and tidy, with some furnishings becoming a little tired, but still acceptable. The staff are very helpful and friendly, the WiFi in the hotel is great, and the breakfast is very good! The location is ideal, Moffat is a nice village with plenty of places to eat & drink. will hopefully return later in the year.

"Not up to scratch"

User 20/02/2016

Cold, condensation running down the inside of the windows, mould on Windows in room. Staff great, food not good. 'Chefs' not up to the menu as listed and the vegetables were a nightmare. Booked 3 nights and lasted one. Given the Groupon price it was reasonable value but not an enjoyable experience.

Ignore the negative reviews about this hotel they are unfounded and unnecessary. We booked a two night deal with free bottle of prossecco. We were warmly welcomed into a very warm hotel [The weather outside was freezing] and found all the staff helpful and friendly. Our room was clean , bright and cosy with tea & coffee making facilities and complimentary toiletries in the bathroom. We found the menu for dinner to be reasonably priced and far less than you would expect for food of this quality. The first night we had sirloin steak and loin of venison both were excellent and cooked perfectly. On the second evening we had the home made Burger and the steak and ale pie, this pie is to die for! The chef here is obviously proud of what he produces and rightly so, a big pat on the back for him. Finally the breakfast which was included in the deal had a varied choice but the Full Scottish Breakfast was the best I have ever tasted. All in all this was a relaxing couple of days in pleasant and friendly surroundings. Do yourself a favour and try it.

"Clean and comfortable"

Susi W, Leamington Spa, United Kingdom 15/02/2016

I booked the Moffat House hotel for a work trip, mainly because it is a Best Western and we are diamond members. It was pretty much as expected. Staff were very friendly, the main building is lovely and grand. My room was in a stable-block type area and the entrance wasn't too promising, but the room was lively with four-poster bed & chaise longue. The bathroom was a little basic & there was no mini-bar. Breakfast seemed really expensive at £24 per person, so I chose not to eat it in the hotel.

PaulLawson, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Susi W, Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay at our property. Your business is very important to us and we value your feedback. By telling us what you liked about your stay and how we can improve, you are helping us deliver a superior experience for you and other guests in the future. We hope you will come back and see us again soon. I think there might have been a misunderstanding as our breakfast pricing starts at £6.50 for continental and the max rate is £12.50 for a full cooked breakfast, I'm very sorry if this was not made clear enough, I hope when you return to our hotel you will try the breakfast as I can assure you, you will not be disappointed. If I can be of assistance in the future, please don't hesitate to contact me at 01683 220039. Sincerely, Ian Wilson General Manager BEST WESTERN Moffat House Hotel

"Pleasantly Surprised!"

aht1968, East Kilbride, United Kingdom 13/02/2016

My wife and I were given a Groupon voucher as a gift by my son. We looked up the hotel and saw that it had received some mixed reviews so we arrived without any expectations. It was Valentine's weekend and we decided to book the Valentine's dinner £25 per head for 3 courses and a glass of bubbly. Our room was cozy and comfortable. There was a problem with our bathrooms heater which was rectified quickly. Service at dinner was great. All 3 courses were delicious and well presented, made using what were obviously high quality produce. This experience was replicated at breakfast, with my full Scottish breakfast being cooked to perfection, the haggis and black pudding were of good quality. I will happily return to this hotel on further occasions.

"Family Get Together"

User 08/02/2016

My husband and I stayed here for a famiky wedding. The room was very outdated and in need of a refurbishment as is the hotel overall. The staff service was very good. The wedding was very efficiently run. The food at the wedding was a carvery. This was delicious as was the breakfast we had before departing. It served its purpose and was nice to be staying in the same hotel as the rest of our family.

"One night stay in February 2016"

Richard H, Kingsley, United Kingdom 06/02/2016

Excellent service from friendly staff who helped me manage the computer hook up....Very pleasant location in a great Market Town. Good base for onward travel. Large well furnished bedroom. Some good whiskies and Bellhaven Best beer was good Would stay again.

"Nice hotel in a nice location"

User 06/02/2016

We visited Moffat for a few days over Christmas and stayed at this hotel. It was very pleasant and with friendly staff. The continental breakfast was a bit lacking in that no cold meats, cheese and the other things you get on the continent were missing. The bedroom was a bit off putting in that it was across the car park and it rained every day. It was comfortable though. The main bedrooms are in the main building, but we had not known about the others when we booked.

"Great location - very friendly Hotel"

JHPHOTO, Clydebank 26/01/2016

We stayed in this Hotel for 2 nights and cannot fault it. Great location, lovely large room and excellent friendly helpful staff. This Hotel is very dog friendly. We have stopped off at Moffat on a few occasions on our way home from down South but this is the first time we have stayed in this lovely town. The Moffat House was spotlessly clean - huge well appointed room and the food and service were excellent. We hope to return very soon.

"Overpriced "

Magsy66, Stranraer, United Kingdom 25/01/2016

Over priced.decor in bedroom a bit dated. Bar prices expensive. Had to ask for toast at breakfast which then came after we had finished eating. Moffat was nice & people friendly but should have chosen another hotel.

"Lovely, comfortable hotel"

917flower, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 24/01/2016

We booked a Groupon deal for one night and were presently surprised by this hotel. Our room was huge, comfortable bed, and lovely and warm. Breakfast was in conservatory overlooking the garden. I had fresh fruit salad to start and so good to see it was not out a tin.One of the best omlettes I have ever had and it is clear that they are using quality ingredients. Lovely, warm and welcoming staff.

"Top class weekend"

barryjulz, Hamilton, United Kingdom 23/01/2016

We were lucky enough to book the cottage suite for the weekend which more than met our expectations. After moving our car to the private space outside the cottage we were met by a very modern and beautifully decorated kitchen. This led to a hallway with a side door that leads outside. The bathroom was spacious with a very powerful shower. Heading past the mirrored hallway leads you to a twin bedroom on the right and the master bedroom straight ahead. The master room is exceptional and lead onto our very own lounge which has breathtaking views of the mature gardens especially covered in snow. All in all the accommodation was fantastic, we ate in the hotel both days and the good was too notch. The manager Ian and waitress Ella were both very welcoming and helped us with a smile with anything we needed. We would definitely recommend this hotel and will be returning in the near future

"Weekend away"

User 20/01/2016

Me and my partner stayed for one night as we had a groupon voucher. The price was very reasonable and a bottle of prosecco was included. The room was spotless and nicely decorated and the staff were friendly and well mannered. Enjoyed the local pubs as it was snowing and found people welcoming. Will be returning.

"Quality Hotel nice location."

User 20/01/2016

This is a very nice hotel in a very picturesque town. The overall quality of the hotel is high. I found every thing to be good, Staff, food, room , bar all good. Book with confidence, I will use this hotel again.

"Comfortable, cosy and clean"

ksb14, Glasgow, United Kingdom 20/01/2016

Had a lovely night in this hotel. We arrived in snowy conditions and found our room to be really cosy and comfortable with one of the biggest beds ever. had a great sleep. Had food in the hotel which was not particularly special but tasty and mid range. the bar and lounge was comfortable and reasonably peaceful to spend some time in with a drink and a good book. We were there in winter therefore spent more time in hotel than normally would. All in all a cosy welcoming experience

"Decent comfortable hotel"

singaporefinn1967, Twickenham, United Kingdom 14/01/2016

This is Decent comfortable hotel. The restaurant is OK though fairly old fashioned. Rooms are well appointed. The lounge bar is comfy. Breakfasts are good. Well situated. The staff are polite and friendly . The only negative is some of the rooms can be on the small size

"Helpful staff, lovely spacious family room"

Lucy S, Lincolnshire, United Kingdom 04/01/2016

We stayed on two occasions, both with two children and a baby. Our first stay was in room 21 which was lovely, so spacious and lovely comfy beds. Our second stay was in room 5, which was still fine but a little more dated and didn't have the same luxurious feeling as room 21. Breakfast was delicious and plentiful. Evening meals okay but a little pricey but bar lounge very comfy and cozy with an open fire. One of the nights we stayed there were floods and the hotel was short staff- however the manager seemed to go above and beyond to make sure no one noticed. We were impressed! We will keep using this hotel as it accomadates us as a family well.

"Great welcome and a great atmosphere"

Richard H, Madeley, United Kingdom 31/12/2015

We booked on spec, last minute arrangement - excellent customer handling, great welcome. The rooms were comfortable warm and everything worked. The food was good and everyone enjoyed their meals - 5 people all agreed it was a well chosen hotel. I will stay again. Value, excellent food, great bedrooms and parking very easy....

"Lovely Hotel, but the staff are exceptional"

Joanie399, Wellingborough, United Kingdom 27/12/2015

Just spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at this wonderful hotel......Christmas day banquet fab. Best Christmas meal ever......But it's the lovely team of staff that make this place exceptional. Lead by Ian....Defo 11 out of 10.......Will definately be back......

"Cottage stay"

andycoey, Liverpool 23/12/2015

Had an overnight stay in the hotel cottage. It is all ground floor level. Nice kitchen with everything you need. Lovely new beds, very comfortable. Lounge was cosy with nice furniture. Large screen TV with sky package. The cottage is right next to hotel on the main street. Everything is on your doorstep. Would definitely stay again.

"Beautiful house in charming location"

ian c, Morpeth, United Kingdom 13/12/2015

Felt the Best Western's booking web site wasn't easy to follow (not the Hotel's fault), meant we were locked into terms we hadn't expected, if closer to initial expectations, we would have rated the hotel higher, suggest terms are double checked before confirmation. It's a nice hotel with friendly and attentive staff. Dining menu, value and service good, quality ok. Room was smallish but ok, mainly for prejudice against mixer tapshowers! (seems an expertise in precision engineering is required to achieve optimum water temperature). Although bath ok, plenty of hot water. Surprised to have summer duvet in winter. All in all would ensure concerns addressed at time of booking and would be happy to return to this charming place.

Britas69, Manchester, United Kingdom 13/12/2015

Lets be clear this is not a 6* Hotel but it is a lovely friendly place where nothing was too much trouble. My wife and I stayed for an anniversary night away and all the requests I had made were delivered, Champagne, chocolates and a beautiful bouquet of flowers plus they had sprinkled rose petals on the bed which was a very thoughtful touch. The decoration is not recent but its clean, well presented and homely so no complaints at all. My only observation would be that the restaurant menu was a bit inconsistent, fantastic starters and desserts, imaginative and beautifully presented Vs quite pedestrian mains with little thought to presentation but still well cooked. Moffat is a lovely country town right outside the front door and worth a wander around yet step back into this charming Hotel and you could be in any country house hotel. We will certainly be back to the Moffat House and a big thanks to the team for a lovely stay.

"Brilliant for the price"

RNodds, Hampshire, United Kingdom 09/12/2015

For the price we paid this hotel was brilliant. The staff were very very good and the hotel itself was very good looking. We stayed for one night as a stop over and it was perfect for us. The bathrooms are a bit outdated and could do with updating but function fine and the matrices was squeaky but apart from that it was great.

"Great value"

planeman90, Hertfordshire 06/12/2015

Although getting a little tired the hotel is very comfortable. The staff are all excellent, food outstanding and even better when you see the prices. Overall a great nights stopover, I will go back soon.

"Baldwin's "

Kate B, Barnsley, United Kingdom 06/12/2015

We had a great weekend break here. The room was clean and had a view of the front courtyard. The staff were excellent very friendly. The food was excellent and good value for money. We arrived down for an evening meal slightly after 9.00pm but the chef was still happy to cater for us. We will be returning to this hotel in the future.

"good for the price"

Robin W, Peebles, Scotland, United Kingdom 02/12/2015

I had a very quick stay here while on a business trip - arrived 7.45 pm and away by 8.00 the next morning. Staff were welcoming and advised me that last orders for dinner was 8.30. Dinner it's self was very good - nice menu and served promptly with a nice real ale from the bar. Single room was tidy if a little dated. My acid test is always breakfast - freshly cooked fry hit the spot. Not the high of luxury but pleasant comfortable and value for money

"Not as good as it looks"

Norman F, Chislehurst 29/11/2015

Recent review taken off by mistake. Unfortunately our stay proved to be an expensive bittersweet end to a lovely holiday. Shortly after checking into my family room with a 2 year old and 9 year old, the rest of my family had gone to bed and whilst they were asleep I had a shower, on stepping back into the room I trod on a small screw (which was from the carpet grip) it cut my foot quite deeply. Once dressed I reported this and the door hanging off the hinges to the reception, I was met with no apology or concern for my injury instead I was told it would be reported to maintenance who would look into it the following day. On checking out the following day I was unhappy with the outcome and informed another staff member at the reception as well as reporting other issues I had with the room such as the mould on the window frames and expressed my unhappiness with the service I had received the previous day and requested to speak to the manager. He apologised and informed me that the manager would not be in until the next day and that he would get him to contact me. The following day I had to call the hotel myself and was told that the manager was not in again and that they would email to get him to call me. I contacted Best Western themselves after still no phone call and they got in contact with the hotel and it turned out the manager was off sick, which wouldnt have been so much of problem if I was told originally! When the manager finally called 2 days after I had made the complaint, I was then told that I hadnt told the reception on the first day that I had cut my foot or that the door was coming off the hinges and that the manager would investigate futher and get back to me - so far no follow up call! Also although the issue of the food and service in the restaurant was dealt with on the day I feel that it just helped to sour the experience considering the room had cost £85.50. With regards to contact we have received 1 phone call with no follow up. No email as no email address was left. Also dont think that this post is solely put on, on the basis of receiving compensation, it was a last resort after waiting for some resolution of a complaint that was poorly handled.

PaulLawson, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Moffat House Hotel, responded to this review
Norman Whilst it is extremely disappointing that you feel the need to leave a review deliberately intended to cause damage it has to be made clear that we will not be held to ransom. Yes you found a small screw, which you picked out of a carpet bar and handed into reception. From here on the story grows arms and legs in a botched attempt to gain 'compensation'. We all worked very hard to make sure you had a comfortable stay Your 'complaints' at the hotel and your review since you arrived home totally contradict each other. Being prone to exaggeration and fabrication leaves you with absolutely no credibility. We have had contact by telephone and e-mail and I have to say you have little subtlety in your methods. Feedback, good or bad, is very valuable to us and forums like Trip Advisor are a great barometer for us as we strive to make constant improvements and maintain our good standards. Unfortunately on this occasion the review gives more of an insight into the person writing it than it does about the hotel itself. Rest assured we will continue to work extremely hard to make every one of our customers and guests feel extra special when visiting Moffat House.

"Not as good as it looks"

Norman F, Chislehurst 27/11/2015

We stayed here on the 22nd of november it looked nice when we arrived. We went to our room my wife and two young kids went and had a sleep i went and had a shower when i got out of the shower i did not see that a screw (which I now know was from the carpet grip) had come out and was on floor, I trod on it and it cut my foot. I took the screw down to reception and told the lady what had happend she said "is it stopping the door closing?" I said no she said "ok ill get that looked at tomorrow thank you" she did not say sorry about my foot or ask if i was ok. In the morning I spoke to the young man at reception and told him what had happened and asked him for Best Western email he said sorry for what had happened. When we first got there we had to ask for heating to be put on and was told it was on a timer but they ended up putting it on, there was also mould around windows, the bathroom door was coming away off its hinges. I ended up talking to the manager after 2 days of chasing and having to call Best Western head office, he tild me that we wasnt informed I had cut my foot because I apparently had not informed the lady on the desk, which I had. I was told that the windows needed repainting and that we got the room at a good rate!! Good rate or not i do not expect to pay £85.50 for a room where I cut my feet have mould on the window frames, the door coming of its hinges and the fuse box in the main hall way with a cable hanging out of it. The manager then referred to where I had stayed the previous night and said to me "I'm sure you paid more for there rooms" I explained that it didnt matter where I stayed prior to my stay at this hotel that I would expect high standards when paying a high price for my room. I was told he would contact me once he had looked into it and am still waiting for a phone call!! Also we booked dinner before 3pm for 6.30pm and we were a party of 13 adults and 4 children and we had one person serving us so our meal service was poor and we ended up finishing our meal at 9.30pm. All in all a very poor experience for the high price we paid and very low standards.

"Great Weekend"

David G, Falkirk, United Kingdom 18/11/2015

Great hotel in a great location. Food, service and staff were all first class. A cheap weekend with friends turned out to be surprisingly luxurious after we were allocated a room with a four poster. Couldn't find anything to winge about at all.

"Mrs Broome"

T B, Preston, United Kingdom 16/11/2015

Absolutely excellent. Great service, lovely and friendly. Excellent food. Highly recommended. Beds very comfy. Very good Scottish breakfast. Immaculate rooms. Deserves to keep busy. Would definitely recommend. We have stayed her now numerous times. We keep going back as its set in a beautiful location in the heart of Moffatt. There is lots of shops to look round and everyone is so friendly. Thank you

"Comfortable and great price"

User 14/11/2015

Stayed here for one night to break up our journey up to oban. Hotel Was nice, easy check in. Stayed in a room just in the courtyard. Was very spacious and the bed was massive. Dog friendly. Only downside was the bathroom/shower. Water pressure extremely poor and was either scalding hot or ice cold. Had we stayed here more than one night this would have been a problem.

"Excellent staff and service - dog friendly too"

Manage_Traveller, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 11/11/2015

A lovely friendly Hotel set in a really nice town. The staff were some of the best I have had the pleasure to meet. Bar is comfortable and friendly and the food is good. The menu is a little limited but is of good quality and good value. Breakfast is first class. The hotel is old fashioned and quirky, which we love. Beware though, there are no lifts, so if you stay on the upper floors and find stairs difficult then you may struggle. That said I would go back again without any hesitation. Dog friendly too. They allow dogs to stay and adopt a sensible policy with regard to access. Dogs allowed in most areas but not the restaurant. That said meals are also served in the bar area, so no problem if you are a dog owner.

"Stop over in Moffat"

User 11/11/2015

Pleasant hotel and friendly staff . Very dog friendly too which we was very Tasty and well presented . Poor selection of wines which was a disappointment .hotel has a good garden at the rear and plenty of parking at the front and because it's on the high street it's within easy walk of shops, pubs, restaurants etc. Overall a nice town to stop in for a night or two .

"A friendly welcome"

Carolyn C, Guildford, United Kingdom 10/11/2015

Moffat House Hotel is a lovely hotel with friendly staff who want to make your stay enjoyable - a lovely welcome to Scotland in a good location just off the M6. We had the 2-bedroom cottage suite which was well appointed and very spacious. WiFi did not connect in the cottage but otherwise this was a very enjoyable stay and we would return without hesitation :)

"Good stay but noisy"

Kankan123, United Kingdom 09/11/2015

I booked a 3 night room only stay for £116 which was non refundable and I thought that was a great price as some bed & breakfast places in Moffat charge £70 per night (inc breakfast though) The hotel is an imposing traditional Country House Hotel and it is in beautiful grounds. The staff were very helpful and I got a free upgrade on my room as the initial one I was given was quite small and dated. The bar area was comfortable and I really enjoyed my breakfast. The downside for me was that my room was at the front of the hotel near the front door and it being a large solid wood door, every time someone came in or went out it slammed LOUDLY, it woke me up numerous times with a jump. Then the cleaning staff were hoovering at 8am! The last thing you want when expecting a quiet relaxed weekend away. I cannot complain too much as I didn't bring it to the attention of the hotel mainly because I had already been given an upgrade and I felt too cheeky.

"Booked into the cottage attached to the hotel, what a find !!"

cocomelmore, Stranraer, United Kingdom 24/10/2015

What a beautiful cottage! Pristine throughout. Really comfy beds. This well appointed cottage had everything one would ever need in the kitchen! The shower was fabby - never got the chance to try out the whirlpool bath however, next trip. The hotel staff were great and pointed us in the direction of the good walks. Can't wait to go back x

"Funny little place"

BladderedBath, Bath 16/10/2015

Stayed on a very cheap corporate rate so shouldn't really complain. Single room was comfortable enough but the shower was barely big enough even for a 5 ft 9 inch skinny person. Couldn't get connectivity to the wifi but with such a fleeting visit, was not enormously disappointed. Breakfast was fine, albeit the coffee was stewed (it is help yourself from an urn) and I got the full Scottish despite not wanting the black pud and haggis - still, these were left on the side. Juices were a bit wishy washy and not up to the normal Best-Western standard elsewhere where I have stayed extensively. Staff were fine but you could detect an undercurrent - not sure what had upset one of them!! Frankly, was glad to be on my way early the next day.

"Lovely staf"

Jacqui D, Liverpool, United Kingdom 15/10/2015

Booked this last minute, lovely place so a bit of luck. Atmospheric old Regency manor house just inside the pretty village of Mofatt. We had a four poster bed in a well appointed very clean room, decorated in true manor house style. The food was good, they cater for food intolerances, the prices reasonable. Staff were very helpful and friendly and I really enjoyed my stay. If you like country manor houses and need a quiet country break, this is the place.

"Super little cottage annex to hotel"

User 15/10/2015

We stayed for 2 nights in the little cottage annex to the Moffat House Hotel. It was clean, warm, cosy, and a total bargain. I was worried about potential noise from the main road or the adjoining hotel but the cottage has thick stone walls and is set back from the road in a quiet corner so no noise problems at all. Highly recommended.

"Nice Enough"

Phil W, Lancaster, United Kingdom 09/10/2015

We called in on spec at about 8 p.m. en route from Edinburgh to Lancashire. Had a reasonable room on the 1st floor, a bit old fashioned but comfortable enough, although very expensive for what you get and MUCH more than the internet price as I found out later, so rather annoying (£109 r.o. compared with £75). Has a bar meal that was O.K., nothing special, rather a drab bar area. Service was O.K. but the staff didn't seem that interested, they didn't seem local, or at least didn't know anything about the area! Nice Scottish breakfast in the pretty dining room in the morning overlooking the hotel's parkland, the best part of our brief stay, but again rather pricey at an extra £12.50 p.p. O.K. but wouldn't go back especially.

"Make sure Best Western Get it Right"

Frederick S, Derby, United Kingdom 05/10/2015

If you book centrally with Best Western make sure they pass on your full request to the Hotel. They did not with me and as a result I did not get the two rooms I specifically asked for meaning my 93 year old mother suffering from osteoporosis and confined to a wheel chair had to climb steps to get to her room, eat her meals in her room and located well away frrom my wife and I rather than being on the level and adjacent. That said I would still strongly recommend Moffat House as the staff and facilities are excellent. It is Best Western that need to pull their socks up!!

"Above average"

GlasgowStephen, glasgow 04/10/2015

Stayed here last night , found it way above average. This is obviously a one night "in transit" stop over hotel , but we found that the staff treated us like long stay guests. Check in was pleasant and with a smile and this continued in all encounters with staff , both bar and breakfasting staff. Breakfast was very good , served looking out onto the grounds , very pleasant. We would certainly return if ever in the area again.

"Pleasant hotel with unconfortable bed and over-priced"

evallonia, nottinghamshire 23/09/2015

Stopped overnight en route from the Highlands to the Midlands. Efficient but not particulalrly friendly receptionist. Room was large and had a very grand looking 4-poster bed. However, it also looked a little tired/dated and when closely examined most of the facilities were no better, if as good, as the £50 per night B&B we had stayed in for several days previously. The bed was uncomfortable and my wife in particular slept badly and awoke with severe backache. Breakfast was served in the conservatory and was fine although the service was not very quick. The guy on reception when we checked out was very friendly and helpful and promised to look into the question of the uncomfortable bed. It is unlikely that I would stay here again.

"Cottage comforts, home from home ."

User 17/09/2015

When booking for this hotel we found they also had this great cottage next to the main hotel . The cottage was excellent inside all newly refurbished with a fully equipped kitchen diner , two large bedrooms , huge bathroom with whirlpool bath and a lounge the cottage was serviced by the hotel and all bedding towels etc provided . The staff of the hotel we're helpful and friendly and food in the restaurant was good. The cottage opened at the back onto the lovely hotel garden and had it's own patio area. A great place for adults or families as a stopover when travelling through Scotland or a place from where you can explore Dumfries and Galloway we will certainly use it again so relaxing and in the centre of this pretty market town . My ratings are for the cottage but the hotel a Best Western was good too.

"Get the 'cottage'"

bentonstoke, Bath, United Kingdom 13/09/2015

Four of us stayed here and they put us up in what they call the 'cottage' - a very smart 2 bedroom apartment - and with a kitchen and living room. Much better than two hotel rooms and quite a lot cheaper.
