"Lovely and old styled"

5
15/11/2018

What a lovely place. I love the way the furniture is old style it makes it feel so homey and the staff is friendly and helpful and very welcoming which you don't always get at other hotels. And the history of the hotel is amazing as well. Photo added for a little read.

"Disapointed"

12/11/2018

This was the third visit to the Mayfield over a period of a few years, and although the Staff, Food excellent, the outside Cottage/room is in need of a refurbishment. The Toilet Seat was so loose it felt as if you were going slide off, the Shower was Cold or Hot not controllable and the heating system needed to be turned on prior to any ones arrival, all these problems were pointed out to reception, the Toilet Seat was rectified the next day, the Tap connected Shower would appear to need upgrading to a Power shower, and the heating was sorted. The food in the Restaurant was excellent very good choice in the Evening, well cooked and nicely presented. Breakfast was a choice of the usual Cereals, Fruit juice , pastries and freshly cooked to order.

My apologies you were disappointed with your stay this time round. If you are returning to the area please send me an email on [email protected]

"Wonderful stay: warm welcome, service staff, TOP NOTCH FOOD"

08/11/2018

I am an American and had never traveled to the UK before. I stayed here for two nights for business with Dyson. I was unsure what to expect but was delighted to find a bar and restaurant on premises. After many hours of travel, I was greeted warmly my first night and invited to dine at the restaurant. The food was great and plenty of beers to choose from. On the second night, I came downstairs and was served by the owner himself, Frank, who poured me a great drink, a tall glass of wine later, and personally brought out my meal. I had chicken and risotto, which really was fantastic. I have eaten at many fine restaurant with Michelin stars and the like, but this particular dish was simple food executed perfectly. Frank then spoke with me about the area and things to do with the family, when I return. This really was a wonderful stay. Thanks to all.

Attentive4, General Manager at Best Western Mayfield House Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks Ryan, it was pleasure to host you in this wonderful area of the world. Hope to be able to welcome you & the family next time.

"very good value"

stayed here with my husband and grandson for 1 night had a good room on the ground floor as my husband has mobility problems. Breakfast was freshly cooked with a good selection, the bar in the evening was cosy and staff were very friendly.

"Little gem in Cotswolds!"

05/11/2018

Exceptional hospitality upon check-in, dinner and breakfast. Bargain price with 5-star service. Dinner was also very nice and a good variety of cooked breakfast available (including kipper and smoked haddock, good for those who are less keen on meat!) Room was spacious, heaters got thermostat we could adjust, generous variety of tea/coffee (3+ types of Twining, 3 types of Nescafe and a Cadbury hot chocolate enough for everyone!) Toiletries in the bathroom also smelled nice. Magazines and booklet recommending places to visit in Cotswolds are also available in the room. Furniture and beds were alright too. (they were simple, clean and functional, well, we didn't really need the grand-design bed to sleep on anyway!)My little tip? please check on the BW website for the sale and if you are definitely not going to cancel your trip, choose the non-refundable option. You could save loads! One last thing, please be careful when driving at night because it's rather dark around there.

Attentive4, General Manager at Best Western Mayfield House Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your comments, I will pass them around our hardworking team. The bonus of it being a bit dark around is that the stars at night look fantastic!! Hopefully we can welcome you back soon, Graeme

"My new favourite small hotel"

31/10/2018

We use hotels for trips up and down the uk. We discovered this beauty this year and have been back 3 times. It is a 3* but punches way above its weight. Very helpful staff in all roles. Restaurant serves a wide variety of the most excellent food . Lovely varied menu. Best breakfast possible we reckon . Anything from kippers to full English, smoked salmon to poached eggs and everything between Suoerming beds , lovely fast hot water for baths or showers in all rooms. Cant wait for next trip , safly next spring Love this place

Attentive4, General Manager at Best Western Mayfield House Hotel, responded to this review
I'm sure spring will roll around scarily quickly and I look forward to welcoming you back then, Graeme

"Not quite what it used to be"

30/10/2018

We have loved this hotel on previous visits but this time we left feeling disappointed. The staff (with the exception of one abrupt man) were lovely as always but the hotel now is so tired it has to have a refurb soon. The downstairs cloakrooms are so old and dated. The restaurant and food seems to have gone downhill despite the many awards it claims to have. The food previously was delicious but this time it was mediocre and the service so slow it took us two hours to have a two course dinner. Unfortunately we decided not to continue to have dinner there and ate in a lovely pub in the village for the remaining evenings of our stay. The Hotel is very welcoming and dog friendly and the courtyard rooms a decent size but so desperately in need of updating especially the bathrooms. In our room the little sofa in the sitting room was underneath the tv!!! Why? Come in Mayfield, reinvest in your business, otherwise you will lose customers.

Attentive4, General Manager at Best Western Mayfield House Hotel, responded to this review
I'm sorry you left feeling disappointed, certainly regarding the food as we are very proud of the standard of food. Should you wish to return please send me an e-mail on [email protected] and I would be delighted to help with a deal to make up for this previous stay. Kind regards, Graeme

"Lovely food, great location for visiting around but........"

30/10/2018

We stayed at the Mayfield house on a break deal. Excellent value. Food all round was excellent , dinner first class imaginative cooking very well presented. Breakfasts all cooked to order and amazing sandwiches in the bar . Its very well situated for visiting nearby attractions and very beautiful countryside. Staff were pleasant and efficient bar/lounge comfortable. Our room ( 12) however was not so great . Smelt musty and quite small. Very poor shower and no bath water hot but no pressure at all beds adequate . All a bit tired really and you would be unhappy if you had paid full price .

"Grest stay"

26/10/2018

We had a short break, having stayed overnight here several years ago. Good location, superb staff, excellent food. Really welcoming and friendly. Comfortable rooms, bar and dining room. Good location for visiting the Cotswolds.

"A special evening"

14/10/2018

We stayed last night for dinner, bed and breakfast. We were in the Courtyard rooms - very comfortable and peaceful! Dinner and breakfast were excellent - and the bar well stocked (compliments to the Chefs and staff!) This us a small country hotel and you get a very warm welcome as the staff are local and nothing is too much trouble for them - wonderful!

"Very dog-friendly and enjoyable stay"

4
13/10/2018

We stayed here once again on a very good bed, dinner and breakfast deal in an upgraded room in the courtyard area. The room was spacious, clean, and with every facility. Huge shower room/toilet with lovely hot and powerful shower. Breakfast was especially good, with excellent service from the waitress, who was spot on in getting all our requests right, even though she was very busy. Slight disappointing evening meal, probably due to wrong choices. All staff efficient and friendly. Hope to return soon !

"Great for Dogs!"

4
09/10/2018

Although the buildings are slightly dated this adds to the charm of the establishment whilst the courtyard rooms are a great idea for those with dogs. We stayed on our way north from Poole and found the Mayfield House ideal situated as it is 'out of town'. Staff were excellent and very friendly.

"Great dog friendly hotel"

4
07/10/2018

Lovely friendly staff,a beautiful spacious room in the courtyard.the hotel was dated but that seemed to add to its charm in this great little village.we ate in the restaurant, the food was very good on both nights.would defiantly stay again next time we are in the area.

"A welcome place to stay"

5
05/10/2018

We have stayed here twice so far and enjoyed our stay each time. Staff are so friendly, helpful, polite and laugh at our jokes!! Location is great for Cotswold visiting. Our room is always clean, comfortable and fully stocked. Food is delicious, both breakfast and dinner. Always a good stay and we will keep booking!

"A Good Example of the Brand!"

4
05/10/2018

We stayed here for a night on the way to the Cotswolds and found it to be a delightful place offering very spacious rooms, excellent service, and a first-class restaurant. The staff could not do enough for us and made us feel so much at home. Our evening meal and breakfast were both really superb. The bathroom was a little tired and needs renovation, and the public areas are also showing signs of much use, but this just reflects what a very popular little hotel this is.

"Great Staff and good location"

4
02/10/2018

As a lot of their reviews indicated it is look a bit tired. Stair carpet very worn and although the bedroom was good the bathroom does go back to the 1970s. Having said that it was all very clean and the staff could not have been more helpful and approachable. Another major positive for us was the way our dog was treated, they are so dog friendly. Breakfast is excellent and very good choice, we only had one evening meal but it was excellent very much up to the standard of a good bistro pub. Although on a road the traffic noise at night was very minimal but had good sleep on the two nights as bed very comfortable. We will be back.

"Leisure trip"

4
27/09/2018

We have stayed here before and will probably stay here again. Very good food, lovely garden with plenty of places to sit. Friendly staff. Pleasant room. Quiet hotel although on a main road. On bus route to Malmsbury & Cirencester

"A 'Tired' hotel carried by fantastic staff"

4
27/09/2018

Fantastic, friendly, welcoming staff made it possible to tolerate the shortcomings of the hotel. We were only there for two days, so our impressions may not be fairly balanced. The stair carpet is threadbare on the treads, and is maybe not far off becoming a hazard. Our tiny box-room of a bedroom had the furniture squeezed into it in a manner that made it impossible to place a chair in front of the dressing table. The chair was squeezed in at the bottom of the bed, leaving a small gap to navigate through when walking around the bed. I lost count of the number of times that I stubbed my toes on the chair legs. The hinged shower screen fixed by the bath would not swing open as the top of it fouled against the sloping ceiling. This prevented one from reaching the taps to run a bath without first climbing into the bath to get round the shower screen. The menu selection only pays token lip-service to vegetarians, giving a main course choice of Pasta with Cheese or Pasta with Cheese! They did obligingly cook Fried Egg & Chips for me, but had to charge me for Fish and Chips as their billing system was inflexible. The Sandwich choice at the bar was Ham, Chicken or Tuna. As a special favour they did make me a cheese sandwich. The limited staff were very, very friendly and helpful but appeared to be overworked. Don't be surprised to recognise the waitress as the same person who booked you in at reception earlier, or be asking yourself where is it that you have seen the barman before. We would stop there again just to experience the friendly atmosphere.

"Mid-week Break"

3
12/09/2018

We have been using this hotel over the last 16 years. We liked the quaint and quirkiness of the hotel, but found on our last visit its lost its quaint and quirkiness to more of a feeling of needing to be updated. The bedrooms are now showing their age. The bathrooms especially need replacing. We especially liked the restaurant on previous visits, but have to say its not what it used to be. Hope some refurbishment is done and then we will return.

"Lovely break away!"

5
29/08/2018

As soon as we arrived we were met by Sian who was on reception and was made to feel welcome straight away! We had a room at the front of the hotel facing the road but this wasn't a problem at all as the road wasn't busy at night and the double glazing worked very well. The room was a good size and very comfortable. It was decorated in keeping with the age of the building and the area it was in. We ate in the restaurant on both of the nights that we stayed. The food was very good, plenty of it and good value for money. Breakfast was included in the room rate and again good quality produce was used.

"Amazing visit"

5
28/08/2018

This is a beautiful hotel and the staff went over and above to assist with my Mum . The room we had was gorgeous and spotless , Dog friendly and went out of their way to be helpful . Hotel is one I would like to return to

"Great hotel and super dog friendly "

5
23/08/2018

We stayed here for 2 nights with our dog. Staff were great and made us and our dog very welcome. Room was big and quiet. We ate in twice too. Pizza was really good. We also asked for onion rings which were not on the menu but they came home made and lovely. Nothing was too much trouble and whilst the hotel is a bit tired looking, would recommend.

"Excellent setting a food"

5
20/08/2018

Recently popped in with friends for a bite to eat and some drinks. A warm welcome, great choice of menu and lovely garden to relax in. The pizzas especially were great. Service was fast and friendly and prices cheaper than expected, will be back soon!

"Not the best of Best Western"

3
18/08/2018

Check in receptionist was not very friendly, rather standoffish! Fire alarm at 3am didn't help - set off by guest in room 30 according to dining room staff! Not good at all & not conducive to good sleep. The whole place needs freshening up & attention to detail with simple DIY jobs. Warnings for hot water which was scalding hot & dangerous. Water pressure for shower was far too low. Shower curtain was scruffy. Potentially dangerous threadbare carpet on stairs. NOT the best of Best Western!

"Very dog friendly :-)"

4
14/08/2018

This place is a little run down so don't look too closely at the decor etc but its clean, the rooms are great, the food is good and served with cheer :-) The staff are SO friendly and it's all really dog friendly. Enjoyed our stay there, as did the dogs, and would def return if we're back in the area.

"B&B treat for the two of us."

5
11/08/2018

We arrived to a very warm welcome at a very professional hotel. There was a mix-up with our booking and it was very well handled. Our room was very clean, the bed was huge and very comfortable. The shower was disappointing as a mixer tap shower. It took some persuading to get it to run not too hot or too cold. The evening meal was extremely good and all of the staff were very professional and made us feel very at home. The breakfast was very good. There was soya milk and gluten free bread available despite us not pre-ordering this. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

"A great stay"

4
24/07/2018

A fine hotel in the Cotswolds. Stayed 3 nights while visiting the Royal International Air Tattoo. The room was very comfortable if a little small, but I think it was single occupancy. Breakfast on all 3 morning sun was delicious and freshly cooked, as were the evening meals which were included as part of the stay. The kitchen staff should be highly commended for their food they create. Hope to be back next year.

"Recommended overnight stop"

4
24/07/2018

Despite being on a busy road, the hotel is acceptably quiet and well situated either for an overnight stop or as a base for exploring the Cotswolds and other nearby attractions. The room was comfortable but rather poky and the overall decor was somewhat tired and would benefit from a refurb, but the staff were very friendly and attentive and the breakfast and dinner imaginative and first class, although service for the latter was rather slow. A useful addition to our repertoire ofhotels to revisit. Cato

"Dropped in and lingered"

4
23/07/2018

Only stopped for a cup of tea in mid morning but staff so obliging and quiet atmosphere so comfortable that sandwiches followed. Treated as if we were spending a fortune. Food most enjoyable. Everything spotless.

"The staff are a credit to the Hotel"

4
21/07/2018

Had a 4 night stay at this pretty hotel near Malmesbury. Very warm welcome when we arrived and a nice comfortable room with good sized shower. Food, guests areas etc all good but the stand-out for us were the staff. We had an unfortunate car malfunction which meant our brand new Mercedes was taken away on a car transporter. On hearing of our predicament, the staff were great. One staff member even offered us her car to go down to the restaurant we had booked for that evening! Lovely people and the hotel deserves to be successful. Many thanks to all and hope to stay again, hopefully with a car that actually works!

"Super friendly staff.....made my day.!"

04/07/2018

We have just enjoyed a five night stay at your lovely hotel. And very little to fault, the Breakfasts were a real treat and the evening meals delicious. Nice well-stocked bar area. The staff are friendly and very helpful, and we were made very welcome both on arrival and throughout our stay. This hotel is not a pretentious boutique hotel (thank goodness) and there is a charm to the dated, but immacutely clean and well appointed rooms. My only minor gripe was the mattress on the bed could I felt, do with upgrading. Otherwise very little to critise or complain about. Plenty of parking, good sized garden with comfortable outdoor seating. Thank you again for a restful and very pleasant week. We enjoyed our stay and would thoroughly recommend your hotel.

"Very dog friendly"

4
20/06/2018

We stayed for a couple of nights together with our dog. Hotel rooms good with toiletries provided. Separate part of the bar provided as eating place for people with dogs so we were able to have our dog with us for dinner and breakfast. Dinner very good with plenty of choice on menu. Being a bit picky here but after all the chefs hard work the bread roll provided was one of those you buy in bulk and cook yourself. Not good, Breakfast was also good but again bread a let down being a choice of mass produced sliced white or brown. I think a contract with a bakery would be a good idea. Overall though , very nice hotel and we would return.

"Decent breakfast."

3
19/06/2018

Just an overnight stay whilst attending a concert at the arboretum. Hotel clean and staff welcoming. Room a little tired, particularly bathroom. Bed comfortable and bedding good quality. Breakfast above average. Nice location although on a fairly busy road. Pleasant grounds.

"Very friendly staff"

4
18/06/2018

Hotel staff very friendly John manger, Sean and Colin make eating there a lovely experience. The rooms could do with a refurbished very clean bathroom very outdated. Would definitely recommend a visit food lovely

"Disappointing"

2
18/06/2018

I (along with other club members) recently attended the Mayfield for a prearranged three course meal (plus coffee). I was disappointed with the way we were received. Despite arrangements being agreed well in advance we were left waiting over 30 minutes after we were called to our tables. Service was slow all evening. I had the general impression that there were not enough experienced staff to wait on our group. There were numerous examples of incompetence - we had to ask for toast to go with pate; we had to serve ourselves with tea and coffee since all staff seemed to have disappeared; the promised petit fours never arrived and food was brought to the table with plates being the last item to arrive. Our organizer spoke to senior staff on the night but regrettably very little improved. To be fair, the venue itself was set out as requested and the pre-meal drink in the bar area went down well. We will think twice about returning.

"Comfortable place to stay"

4
18/06/2018

I stayed overnight as meeting friends at the hotel for dinner. The hotel corridors and paint work needs refurbishing in places. My room was very clean and was well equipped and modern. The food at dinner was of good quality and interesting menu. After our desserts, we seem to be forgotten and had to go to bar to order coffees. The breakfast was mediocre, presentation of cooked not the best and poached egg tasted oily. There appeared to be little organisation at breakfast, several people were asked, by different members of staff, what beverage/toast required. I would stay here again if in the area.

"Excellent food, bathroom shower needs an upgrade."

4
27/05/2018

I organised a tour of 7 Jaguar cars staying 2 nights here. Excellent Dinners and Breakfasts and friendly, helpful staff, some of the rooms were slightly faded and ours (Room 1) had a very tempramental shower. sometimes very hot, sometimes not, never much pressure.

"Super 2 nights stay at the beginning of May"

4
23/05/2018

We stayed for two nights at the hotel 3 weeks ago. There were 52 of us and we booked the whole hotel. Our group came from Brittany ( France). We enjoyed our stay, rooms were clean and comfortable ( just some problems with hot water in bathrooms ), English Breakfast was excellent, the evening meals delicious "dignes d'un bon restaurant français". Staff were all professional, friendly, helpful and welcoming. A lovely time which we will all remember.

"Great location and really good value"

4
23/05/2018

We were booked for 3 nights but only stayed 2, this was no fault of the hotel. The check in was simple and the room was spacious and bright. The decor is from another age but it was well maintained and in keeping with the feel of the hotel. We had quiet nights and the bed was plenty comfortable. We had dinner on the first night, the food was very good but their service let them down, they had a trainee waitress which is not an issue but the manageress was clearly grumpy about something. Breakfast was the stand out and is very good. Again service was just below par, it is possible to get overlooked. Overall recommended and great value, 5 stars if they could just keep their frustrations away from teh front of house.

"Three day break last week."

3
18/05/2018

Good room and comfortable large bed.Good wetroom with grab rails, very necessary for my handicapped husband. Evening menu very disappointing - little change over 3 days. Staff very pleasant, but service very slow.

"Value for money, comfortable room and good breakfasts"

3
24/04/2018

We stayed for two nights in a double room on the first floor. We have no dietary complications or access difficulties. Our room was not large but had everything we needed and plenty of electric sockets, including one near the mirrored desk. There was one window which we could open, facing onto the main road, traffic noise was not a problem as the road was quiet at night. There was no air conditioning which may be a problem in warmer weather but our Spring stay didn't require air/con. The only issue we had was that the hot water in the bathroom was only hot if we let the water run for a really long time. This seemed very wasteful. The shower was electric which was really good as a lot of hotels rely on their own water heating systems and are frequently disappointing. Wifi is free and excellent. We booked our stay in the winter sale so £128 including breakfast was excellent for two nights. The food was good and the choices we were given excellent. Staff were attentive and organised and helpful, although a minor hiccup with a request, which didn't materialise, but nothing important. Would recommend to most people, but not quite international standards.(lack of air/con and no specifics on the breakfasts, not sure what the Americans would think of it!) It suited us very well though!

"Weekend break."

5
23/04/2018

We found the hotel clean and service was good. Room was spacious and comfortable. Excellent breakfast with adequate choices. Staff in restaurant were very friendly and efficient. Very good free wifi, overall good value for money.

"Very welcoming"

5
22/04/2018

A lovely little hotel in the Cotswolds. The staff are lovely - very welcoming and friendly. We were upgraded to a larger room which was very comfortable with plenty of drawer space. The bathroom was ok but could benefit from being modernised. The food was excellent. We could have eaten everything on the menu which is why we ate there two nights running. The smoked salmon starter was delicious as was the sea bream main. The duck breast was perfectly cooked. We also enjoyed a pint of the Bath ale whilst sitting in the garden. The hotel needs a bit of a makeover - the stair carpets are rather worn- but overall a very pleasant experience and if we are in the area again this is the hotel we would stay in.

"VERY DISAPPOINTING SUNDAY LUNCH"

1
17/04/2018

My Wife and I were given a voucher by our Grandchildren at Christmas for a Sunday lunch at The Mayfield House Hotel. Our first impression of the hotel was very pleasant. On ordering our Sunday lunch, we chose carrot and coriander soup which when it arrived was luke warm and green in colour. This was definitely not as advertised. Our main course was roast beef which on arrival was nothing but gristle and very tough. We did not receive Yorkshire puddings when requested, we were told they came with the lamb dinner! I returned my meal, my wife left most of hers. I was then given a second dinner which was a great improvement on the first. The waiter did not ask my wife if her dinner was not satisfactory he just removed the plate. On settling the bill we witnessed two more people also complaining about their meals. We complained and were told our drinks would be complementary. This was not the reason for our complaint. We have stayed at many Best Western Hotels and have never had such poor quality food. I hope this was a one off situation and my negative review will improve the food at this restaurant in the future.

"Going for it but missing the obvious"

4
15/04/2018

Hotel room was spacious and well equipped, bathroom huge and a great wheel in shower, to get in there was a drainage gap just before the door that required a good wheelie or you landed in chippings. Reception area was fine but that was it a ramp was required to go to the bar, dinning room and breakfast area. However staff were accommodating and prepared to get it out for me however for me when offer a wheelchair accessible room I expect a wheelchair accessible hotel and I don't want to ask for a ramp to go here a ramp to go there I want to be able to be like every other person and have freedom of movement. Staff were great and we had breakfast and evening meal served in bar that was the lowest step to get to but need the toilet I had to go back to my room no disabled toilet in main building. This is a place where they decided to do disabled without asking someone disabled whether they should. I paid a hefty price because it was Cheltenham week and had to have a breakfast evening meal package, even though it was an hour drive and all I got was reminded that hotels think if they offer a room with facilities and a ramp that they have cracked it, one night I was constantly needing the toilet so started meal and ended up taking tray back to room, because no toilets and one morning was sick at table because husband had gone back to room and he had lifted me up step so was stranded, disabled rooms come with disabled people who sometimes have extra needs that require more access to the basics permanent ramps , so not stranded, disabled toilet in main facility so don't have to eat in room if it's raining. Staff were good and did what they could but wouldn't recommend for a wheelchair person unless they were room only, something I didn't have an option of because of Cheltenham it was all or nothing.

"GOOD PIT-STOP WITH EXCELLENT BREAKFAST"

4
15/04/2018

John, ( I believe ) duty manager appeared to be working very hard doing a multitude of jobs. He was very welcoming and helpful. All other staff in the resturants too were very polite frieendly and helpful. Breakfast was excellent, I even asked for the chef to be complimented on my bacon and scrambled eggs as they were cooked to perfection, gluten -free bread was available for my partner Suzanne. My only minor criticism was the shower. Whilst there was loads of hot water, it was a bit like standing underneath a watering can !

"Good value"

4
14/04/2018

We stayed for one night whilst visiting Highgrove on a dinner bed and breakfast deal. We had a spacious superior room which included an ensuite and it had all that we needed. The bathroom fittings are slightly dated. The shower did not provide a steady stream of water but this should be fixed as we pointed it out to the staff. The hotel is in a quiet position and we would stay there again.

"Friendly and Comfortable. Just a little tired."

3
09/04/2018

We stayed here over the Easter weekend as a family of three. Our room consisted of three single beds rather than a double and a single but that was not a major issue. The décor was dated but the room was comfortable and although it was at the front of the property was very quiet. The heating was on a different time scale making the room really warm at night but we had no heating in the morning. Unfortunately, the shower really did not work in our room even after we had asked for it to be looked at. The staff were, however, very friendly and always willing to help and pass on knowledge about the surrounding area. It was difficult to relax in the bar in the evening as it is quite small and often taken over by other residents and their dogs. (including the sofas!) While I know this is a dog friendly hotel I think more consideration could be given for the two legged clientele. We found ourselves either going out or hiding away in our room to relax. We only had dinner here on the first night and despite the hotel's reputation for food were a little underwhelmed. Breakfast, however was excellent with a wide choice of cereals, pastries and juices and a freshly cooked selection of hot food. It is such a shame because we actually liked the hotel and the staff but there were a few things that let it down like the décor, the plumbing and our four legged friends.

"Relaxing stop over"

4

We stayed one night with our dog on a short break away late March. This hotel is around 4 miles (less than 10 minutes) outside Malmesbury, in a small village setting. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly throughout our stay. They could not do enough to ensure you have a good stay. There is a separate annex of 3 cottage rooms especially for those staying with dogs, with easy ability to park outside the door and there is some grass near the hotel as well as a public access field and stream to walk the dog. The room was clean and a good size. Inside the hotel, dogs are accommodated in the bar area (the snug) where you can eat an evening meal or have breakfast with your pooch. Due to the weather we didn't get chance to go further than walk to the church just up the street and we noticed the local pub "The Potting Shed" was dog friendly for a change of scene. It was very refreshing to stay in a hotel that was dog friendly and made our stay so easy and welcoming, we will book this hotel again .

"Very good country hotel"

Friendly, helpful and efficient reception. Clean room with comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast selection. Very good restaurant food and service. No lunches at the moment due to training new kitchen staff.

27/03/2018

We stayed at Mayfield House for 3 nights with our Border Collie, Harley. This was our second time at this lovely country house hotel and the stay was just as enjoyable as the first. The staff are very friendly, food is first class, especially the cooked breakfast which really sets you up for the day. Harley was allowed in the bar area with us for meals, which is a nice touch. The hotel is well situated to visit all The Cotswolds has to offer. I cannot understand how anyone can give a negative review about this excellent hotel. Maybe they're above their station. Thank you Mayfield until the next time.

Nice to have had you all back. Thanks, Graeme

"Rotary Club of Lewes Fellowship Weekend"

5
25/03/2018

The Rotary Club of Lewes, chose this Hotel for its recent annual fellowship weekend because of its location, the fact that we could virtually take over the whole place, and the deal they were able to offer us. Though some of the accommodation would benefit from little upgrading, that was more than made up for by the excellence of their friendly, attentive and highly efficient staff, which coupled with a very high standard of catering, made our stay a great success.

"Comfortable stay"

23/03/2018

The hotel is well placed for touring around the Cotswolds. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The decor is rather tired but clean and comfortable. Our room was at the front of the hotel near the roadside so a bit noisy. Breakfast was good and plenty of choice. Overall it was value for money.

"Over night stay"

5
21/03/2018

This was the first time that we stayed at the hotel, and we were very impressed with the staff, breakfast menu, the room, and the hotel its self. We will definately be back. The hotel is ideally situated for us as a break en route between the east midlands and the south west

"Basic"

2
25/02/2018

Having read previous reviews we were expecting something completely different. Our room was very basic, dated and not clean. The price was reasonable but we have paid this price many times before and had a lot more for the cost. The breakfast however was very good although had to be paid for as an extra. I would not return to this hotel and I would definitely not recommend it!!!

"Worst Western Hotel"

1
18/02/2018

I do not wish to be patronising, but the people on here who gave this place a good review, must have very low standards. The decor is very dated and looks like something out of the 80's, complete with artexed ceilings. It is difficult to imagine what this place may have looked like before it was modernised/ruined. It would require a fortune to be spent on it to bring it up to a reasonable standard. Bedrooms have a myriad of different window types, some of the rotting wooden ones replaced by UPVC. Furniture and carpets are very dated also. Shower in bathroom worked to start and then 'gave up the ghost'. The food was representative of a very low quality establishment and our main course took over an hour to come and the restaurant wasn't even busy. To cap it all, the seasonal veg consisted of a bowl of Kale and the chips were typical Mc Donald's style straight out of the freezer. The decor and furniture in here was also very dated. I have to say that the staff were very friendly though and that was 'the only saving grace'. The ratings below have nothing to do with the overall experience, because it is in a nice part of the country and the staff appear do their best.

Dear Guest or WORST REVIEWER , Thank you for your feedback thankfully our patronised guests in the main tell us differently . Regards

"Groupon deal"

5
18/02/2018

We had an overnight deal from groupon which was bed and breakfast and £15 towards dinner. We loved the location of the hotel - only a short stroll to the local pub the potting shed which we enjoyed. Room was spacious with usual amenities. Breakfast had lots of choices including full English but also kippers and haddock. We enjoyed dinner but £15 didn't go far towards it. All staff were very pleasant and friendly.

Had a lovely couple of days here 13/14 February. Room lovely, great meal on 13th and above all friendly and welcoming staff, from our chat with the owner, the manager and waitresses and new barman. All were very helpful, friendly and are a credit to the hotel and Best Western, many thanks

"10/10 This is how to do it right. DOG friendly at its best!"

12/02/2018

If you're looking for somewhere to stay where your dog is welcome, then this is the place! We booked this hotel for a one night stay in a family superior room. The room was spacious, clean and really good value. But what absolutely made the stay was the amazing staff. They were faultless from start to finish. We were shown to our room straight away, despite arriving a bit before the check in time. Dinner and breakfast was booked for us separate from the main dining room, with a lovely table where we could have the dog with us. Nothing was too much trouble! Dinner was fantastic, we didnt wait long for the food, it was hot and largely home made, a dog bowl of water was even brought out! I would recommend this hotel for value and ease of access off the M4. More hotels could do with staff like this. Top Job. Thank you

Thank you, we like to provide a warm welcome to all guests, 2 legs or 4, and are glad it is appreciated.

"Super 2 night stay in February"

04/02/2018

This hotel was a lovely surprise. My partner and I were given a Red Letter Day experience and added an extra night. It was situated in an area we hadn't visited before and so took a chance. From our check-in to our departure, we couldn't ask for more friendly and attentive staff, they go the extra mile to help. We booked a classic room with twin beds and had plenty of room. The en-suite thankfully had a bath, not just the ubiquitous shower, something we both fully used. The room was situated on the first floor at the rear of the building and was very quiet. The room, bedding, towels and bathroom were spotless. There is a nice bar and sitting area on the ground floor along with the breakfast room and dining room. But my favourite item of all was the superb food. We had two breakfasts and two dinners and they were all of first class quality, freshly prepared to order and elegantly served. A special mention must go to the chef's first class wild mushroom stroganoff served with rice. Also to the chicken in wine and cream sauce with a freshly prepared potato rosti. If we lived nearer we would definitely make this a regular dining out venue. We would like to thank all the staff for making this a really enjoyable weekend.

04/02/2018

Stayed at the Mayfield with friends. The two rooms we were put in were clean and tidy and fine for one night. We did have a round of drinks in the Bar 4x Cotswold gin and tonics £30.60. The staff were professional and friendly. Breakfast the next morning was very good and we all enjoyed it.

"Very welcoming small hotel with a good restaurant and bar close to Malmesbury, Gloucs."

02/02/2018

This is our second visit and this time it was to celebrate both mine and my oldest friend's 70th birthdays. We were given superior rooms which were excellent with views over the grounds, we had a lovely supper in the restaurant. The staff were excellent and we spent some time at the bar before eating. We had a walk in the afternoon despite the wet weather and this would be a good base for walking generally. There is a large car park, a pub a short walk along the road and plenty of places to visit nearby. A very nice, well run hotel

Our recent stay at Mayfield House has been a lovely experience. A very welcoming and comfortable place with polite and attentive staff. Clean well set out and an easy atmosphere enabling a relaxing stay. Great service in the restaurant and bar area and an interesting and well proportioned menu made the stay all the more enjoyable. I can highly recommend this hotel and look forward to staying again in the future.

29/01/2018

A one night stay to meet up with a school friend for a joint birthday celebration, this hotel was a welcome change from the city/town monoliths, with corridors and stairs and "mind your head" signs . In truth I nearly expected "Basil" to come striding out of reception, not that the staff were anything like him, all were very pleasant and helpful. The hotel in general felt a little tired, yet our room was warm, clean and comfortable, but again a little caveat, we both could hear some sort of machinery sound emanating from the ceiling space, which I just could not cancel out for a perfect nights sleep. Our meals, dinner and breakfast were hot, fine and tasty, the deal we were on being DBB very reasonable. The 4 of us had a memorable, relaxed, cozy stay, even enjoying a bottle of English Champers from a Ditchling,Sussex vineyard. The area has plenty to offer the tourist so the Mayfield is a good base to start from for any traveller.

"Pleasant Stay - but sadly disappointed "

2
14/01/2018

This countryside hotel was fairly priced and we were welcomed warmly by a lovely host. However from that point on we were disappointed - the room was very old fashioned and dreary. The shower was tiny and took ages to get hot water through, and when the toilet was flushed it made a loud fog horn noise for 10 minutes. If you want a cheap stay with basic amenities I would recommend however if you want a comfortable luxury weekend stay in the countryside - this is not the place for you.

"New Year Festive - 3 night stay"

07/01/2018

4 of us - myself & partner, + brother & his wife stayed for 3 nights at the hotel, rooms were spacious, beds comfortable, rooms overall were good. Food - excellent, fantastic breakfast choice, could not fault their breakfast menu in any way. We were spoilt with "afternoon tea & cakes" Evening meals were - Best I have had for a long time - Chef takes pride in his work and the results are delicious. Staff were always polite and helpful. Parking - plenty of spaces. Local area around Crudwell is centre of the Cotswolds and is a beautiful to area to drive around. I would stay here again.

"Comfortable and good value"

4
03/01/2018

Just a one night stay on my way to Bath. Good value, booked directly on BestWestern website. Single room was small, but warm, clean and comfortable. Wonderfully powerful shower - actually too powerful for the showerhead wall bracket, as I had to hold on to the shower head to keep it from jumping out of its bracket! There are two nice pubs in village, within a few minutes walk (turn left out of the driveway for the nearest, or right for the one which is slightly further away). I woke to find a fairly heavy snowfall outside. Very pretty! The hotel was short-staffed for breakfast as a result, but were very resourceful in rustling up a good bacon sandwich in lieu of the usual "Full English".

"Nice friendly hotel"

01/01/2018

I booked this hotel through Groupon for two nights including dinner for one night and it was good value for money. Our room was basic but comfortable and provided all we needed. The staff were friendly and we enjoyed our stay. Would like to give a big recommendation to Colin who went out of his way to find another alternative when the Venison had run out on the menu. I had lovely lamb chops thanks to him and it was delicious. Compliments to the chef also. Nice location with 2 pubs in walking distance and the Cotswolds just on your doorstep. Would stay again

"A 2 Night Escape"

19/12/2017

We booked this using a Groupon voucher and duly arrived, to find that we were a day early! The staff weren't phased and found us a room. While the room was a little dated it was very comfortable and the bed was great, and the dog loved it. We then went for dinner and it was spot on, we had a most enjoyable roast dinner. We then got up the next morning and had a most pleasant expansive breakfast, it was worth it for this alone. The staff were friendly and helpful and pampered the “hound” whenever he was out and about! We would go back again tomorrow, and would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet venue.

"Disappointed"

1
18/12/2017

We booked a groupon deal at this hotel to tie up with a day at nearby Highgrove. Unfortunately on the day we were snowed in, in our village & were unable to do either experience. Highgrove was wonderful & immediately refunded our money but the hotel refused to rearrange. We were immediately told that as it was prepaid it was forfeited. They were so happy to tell us that this was Groupon's rule. We have stayed here before but never again. Airports were closed, schools were closed but their indifference was appalling. Be aware.

"Nice hotel"

13/12/2017

Nice hotel and good food. Service is ok but one person (woman) always seem to be tired with us, although we were very polite. This is not acceptable and leave a bad feeling, even whether other people were nice.

"Cosy Country Hotel"

13/12/2017

We stayed here with a friend in two rooms on a groupon voucher. We received a very warm welcome and our rooms 25 & 26 were away from the main Hotel in a bungalow. Our rooms were "tired" , but the bathrooms were spotless as was bed linen, towels were fluffy and changed daily and there was plenty of hot water. We had a meal in the restaurant on the first night as part of the voucher. But as most main courses were more than the £15 limit we had extra to pay. We all slept well as it was quiet, when we arrived for breakfast in the morning we had a reserved table and were again warmly welcomed by staff. Our breakfast was buffet, juice and cereals etc. but the hot food and toast was freshly cooked to order. We did have a query on our bill when we checked out but this was quickly resolved. We would stay here again as we had a good experience.

"Disappointing"

2
02/12/2017

The Christmas meal seasin has got off to a bad start. This looked like a promising evening for 40 friends. The starters were okay, but who serves shell on prawns (7 of them to be precise) without having a finger bowl or some other arrangement to clean messy hands! The roast pork was over cooked, the vegetable portions rather meagre and the service a bit random. Don't go for cheese and biscuits. The amount of cheese you get is a joke. The bar is well stocked but very expensive. I won't be going here again in a hurry.

"Fantastic Hotel with Great Service in a Lovely Setting"

5
27/11/2017

This hotel is fantastic - it offers lovely accommodation, great service and superb food. We stayed here as a 3 day Groupon deal which was a fantastic price. The hotel is in a quiet location in a village and is fairly close to the Cotswolds, Gloucester and Cheltenham - all of which we visited. The rooms are clean, spacious and warm, and are cleaned daily. The staff are friendly and offer a great service. - second to none. The breakfast was also superb and plentiful - tea, coffee, juices, cereals, fruit, yoghurts, Danish pastries, toast and various cooked options including a full English. There is also an A La Carte Restaurant, again serving lovely food and a nice bar. We would highly recommend this hotel for a lovely weekend away, and will definitely be returning here again in the not too distant future.

"Perfect dog friendly hotel"

5
25/11/2017

First time we have gone away with our 7 month old dog. Hotel caters perfectly for those with or without pets. Our room was ground floor in an annexe so no one would be disturbed. Also meant we were able to take dog out in night. Breakfast freshly cooked to order. Breakfast also provided for dog. Evening meal superb. Staff were friendly, attentive and helpful. All made a right fuss of our dog, as did the other guests. A truly lovely weekend which we would recommend to anyone with or without pets.

"Clean, comfy, quiet and nice staff."

4
23/11/2017

The Hotel staff were all very nice, the food was good and my room (Room 11) was very comfortable, quiet and clean. I stayed at the hotel for work so left early and arrived late. It was always fairly quiet in the Hotel - not too many other guests. While the restaurant decor was nice some of the corridors did look a bit dated (bright and busy old fashioned carpets). Room was good though.

"Great Place for a Reunion."

5
19/11/2017

We are a group of dentists who trained together over 40 years ago at Guy's Hospital in London. For the past 7 years we have had an annual reunion and this year we chose Mayfield House and we are so pleased we did. The hotel could not have been more accommodating. For a start, they put my wife and I on the first floor but she has difficulty with the stairs. My fault, I should have checked before booking. I did not realise ther was no lift. Not a problem for Mayfield House! They changed rooms for guests yet to arrive and put us on the ground floor. The food was excellent and served with a banter that we all loved! Our waitress was terrific and gave as good as she got from this group of 9 elderly juveniles! With regard to the food, breakfast was served freshly cooked for each guest. It was such a relief for all of us that we did not have to face the dreaded semi cold buffet of the Full English so prevalent in hotels today. It turned out to be the best hotel we have had a reunion in so far and it was all down to good food, excellent service and an very attentive staff. If you are planning one, this is a great hotel for a reunion.

Thanks Steve, always a pleasure to have groups of any size staying, especially if they are as friendly as all of you!

"Excellent accomodation and food"

15/11/2017

Stayed for 3 nights on a Groupon deal, this proved to be excellent value for money. On arrival, there was plenty of space to park in the large car park, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The room was large, clean, warm and comfortable with the usual tea / coffee making facilities, TV etc. and free WiFi was available throughout the hotel, including the room. Breakfast was excellent, as was the evening meal (we had lamb shank which was superb). The only disappointment was that the shower in the en-suite which was definitely at the dribble end of the shower spectrum

"Lovely Hotel"

08/11/2017

Fantastic location, lovely hotel and appreciating the property's age it was very clean, very comfortable and full of character. The breakfasts were of a very high standard and the evening meals were delicious. Staff were friendly and accommodating. Good off road parking and lovely grounds.

Practical and clean accommodation with comfy king-size bed and very good bathroom. Our dogs were made most welcome and there is a good walk which starts directly opposite the hotel. We had a very respectable dinner and freshly cooked breakfast. All in all, good value for money and to be recommended.

"Professional and Personal service"

5
02/11/2017

The hotel has quite an awkward entrance, but thereafter all is well. The room was excellent, warm and welcoming. I personally do not like showers in baths, but this one was easy to control. A tiny little bit of tlc would not go amiss on the bathroom floor. We used the hotel as a centre to visit various National Trust properties and the national arboretum (for which the hotel provided tickets). The food was excellent well, and unobtrusively served. Overall there was a pleasant, warm atmosphere, and the staff were very helpful and professional. All in all I would wholehearted recommend this hotel. I want to go back!

"Very Welcoming"

3
30/10/2017

On arrival made very welcome. Clean and tidy room. Nice breakfast. Roomed in the adjacent annex. The wall are thin and could clearly hear what was being said in the next rooms. The hot water system easily swung between skin removing hot and cold water in the shower if someone opened a tap in another room attached to the rooms water system. To be fair there is a sign warning you that the water is hot and they are not kidding. They need to fit thermostatic controlled showers to avoid injury. Would stay again if in the area.

"Restaurant sadly lacking !"

2
28/10/2017

We had been given a Red Letter Day meal for two last Christmas unfortunately this is the closest restaurant as we live in Cornwall. Anyway duly arrived for our meal and greeted by lovely staff who showed us to our table. Our choices were half pint of prawns and goats cheese with poached pear - both of these were ok. For our main course I had roast chicken and my husband chose the beef burger which was tough and uninspiring, he managed to eat the chips, very disappointing. The waitress did ask if our meal was ok and we did comment but that didn't seem to get any response which should have been passed onto the kitchen. My husband by then decided that the safest option was ice cream and mine was chocolate and cherry trifle, just ok ! Overall a very disappointing choice and even the manager asked had we enjoyed our meal and we were honest, but his only comment was “hope we see you again” !! I think not. Hopefully they will put a little more thought into the food choices as I have read previous comments which appeared to be good,

"The Mayfield House Hotel. In Urgent Need of an Overhaul into the 21st Century."

2
26/10/2017

We booked this hotel through groupon. The only reason we stayed the full two nights was because it is practically impossible to get your money back for anything purchased from Groupon and I did not want to upset my partner by walking out as she had made all the effort in booking the hotel. We stayed in this hotel for two nights during October 2017. The state of the room, No 5, we were allocated was appalling apart from the bed. We asked to be moved when we got there but were told this was not possible. There was wallpaper hanging from the walls, the wallpaper on the ceiling and corners was bubbling, the state of the shower with the curtain falling to the floor and the cracked and poorly finished plastering was disgusting and the chair needed completely re-upholstering as the plastic was flaking. When we mentioned to a member of staff which room we had been allotted we received raised eyebrows. There are levels of accommodation that are unacceptable and this was the case with Room 5 of the Mayfield House Hotel.  We were informed that the meal allowance was only £15.00 each even though the menu quite clearly stated the allowance was £28.00 per person. Possibly due to the fact that we had booked via Groupon?? So we felt as if we were being penalised for booking via groupon. On arriving at breakfast on the first morning of our stay we were greeted by very little choice on the serve yourself table. A couple of croissants were left an hour before the breakfast period ended and some cereal. Watered down orange and other juices. And a breakfast menu that was not all available. When I requested that the croissants be replenished I was ignored. In fairness the evening meal that we were served on the second night of our stay was acceptable and the waitressing staff courteous and helpful. The general condition of the hotel matched that of the room and although we both enjoyed our travels in the Cotswolds I personally would not wish to stay at the Mayfield House Hotel a second time. The Manager's response to our concerns, made via the customer services department of Best Western, was to make various excuses based on his perception of the hotel he runs. They certainly are not in accordance with my own. Not a venue I could recommend I am afraid.

"Unpretentious, welcoming hotel in good Cotswold location"

22/10/2017

We needed two adjacent rooms and we were in effect given a two bed cottage with communicating hallway opposite the hotel reception. Very convenient and great to enable us to meet with the rest of our family who live fairly nearby without disrupting the main part of the hotel.Food was good value and service was efficient and friendly.

"Thoughtful for gluten free guest"

3
16/10/2017

The hotel had a slightly quirky layout and despite our group making a booking for two rooms we were not given rooms near each other, in fact our friends had a room in a separate annex. The room had the usual furniture etc but was slightly dated. The bathroom was compact but functional. Our booking was room only. We arrived on a Friday evening and the restaurant was busy but we did not eat there. When making the booking my friend mentioned that my husband requires gluten free, a whole packet of gluten free biscuits was provided with the tea and coffee tray. This was very thoughtful and not something we had experienced before.

Attentive4, Manager at Best Western Mayfield House Hotel, responded to this review
I'm happy the gluten free biscuits went down well. Regarding your rooms not being close together - we are only a small hotel & have guests who make room requests or who have certain requirements only a couple of rooms meet, while we try to keep bookings for multiple rooms close together it is not always possible, sorry for any inconvenience.

14/10/2017

We found this an excellent hotel to stay for 3 nights visiting various historic market towns - Malmesbury, Tetbury, Cirencester and Westonbirt Arboretum. We had room 11, a twin room, which was very comfortable, overlooking the garden and away from the road. However the double glazing had been updated and would have shut out any noise. We ate dinner twice in the restaurant and couldn't fault it, it was beautifulyl presented and tasty.

"Best Western more like Average Western!"

3
10/10/2017

My partner and I recently stayed here for two nights. The hotels decor was very tired and was in need of refurbishment. Our room was clean but the furnishings were dated and tatty. The chair in the room was threadbare, the shower curtain pole kept falling from its fixings, the shower tray and surround was cracked and the wallpaper on the ceiling and walls was falling off in places. The double bed was comfortable and we slept well. The breakfast was ok, however we were pleasantly surprised by our delicious evening meal. The staff were pleasant and mostly helpful. Don't think we would stay here again.

02/10/2017

Had a very comfortable 3 night break at this lovely small hotel, very easy to find from junction 17 on M4, and made a great base for exploring the Cotswolds. On arrival reception staff were very friendly and informative and made us feel very welcome. Very well stocked bar with great gin and craft beer menu. Food in the restaurant was very good. On our first night there was a specials menu and with Thai fish cakes and chicken curry, we were told the chef had been to Thailand and you could certainly taste it in the wonderful authentic flavours. Breakfasts were also very good and reataurant staff again were all very friendly and welcoming. Would certainly stay there again when in the area.

"Hard to Find a Fault"

5
02/10/2017

When you go away on a Groupon Deal you usually expect and put up with something not being quite right. So I can only say that this hotel didn't have any WOW factor which seems incredibly mean as I am now going to list all the good points. All of the staff were attentive, incredibly hard working and very friendly as long as you are not sensitive to being called 'darling, sweetheart etc ' which we weren't. The car park was large enough and the grounds were well looked after and would have been nice to sit in had the weather allowed. The whole hotel was clean and tidy and the rooms were spacious enough, clean and everything that should have worked did. The bed was comfortable and although we thought the traffic noise might be a problem the double glazing worked perfectly and we slept really well. Although carpets and fittings weren't new they were far from needing a refurb. The food was plentiful and well cooked served in a nice if somewhat dated restaurant with a good atmosphere with a bit of background music. Breakfast was help yourself to cereals and fresh fruit and then freshly cooked with plenty of variety on a theme. You would not go hungry here. The wine list was a bit pricey which put me off but other than that the Mayfield House Hotel was doing everything right which I hope was proven by the number of satisfied customers staying when we visited.

"Very Enjoyable Stay"

Booked this hotel on a three night Groupon break. When we arrived on the Wednesday we were warmly greeted by the gentleman on reception and check in was very straight forward. The room was an adequate size with the usual tea/coffee and biscuits provided and plenty of decent sized towels which were changed daily. Breakfast was a help yourself to cereals/yoghurt/fruit juice and then the waitress took orders for tea/coffee toast and anything cooked. We had a table reserved in the snug each day as we had our dog with us which was very helpful and we certainly didn`t feel tucked away and forgotten. Checking out on the final day was again very straight forward and all the staff we encountered throughout our stay were very pleasant and polite. If we were likely to return to the area I would certainly stay here again. The only points I would make if you are using a groupon voucher are they only have a certain number of rooms available at that rate at any one time so you may need to be a bit flexible with when you can stay and although mine entitled me to dinner on the first night you actually only get an allowance of £15 per person which does not cover all the main dishes on the menu.

Really lovely place, friendly staff, the room we had, located in the Courtyard was great and the supersized bed was so comfy, you wouldn't know someone else was in there with you. We had a very enjoyable time an the Duty manager was very attentive.

This was a three night stay booked with a Groupon voucher. The staff were friendly, the room well-appointed with a spacious bathroom. An excellent breakfast was provided with plenty of choice. Dinner, which we had on the first evening, was a disappointment. As a main course we had the hake and crab risotto. The dish was under-seasoned and when fish is served with the skin on the skin should be crispy and presented skin side up; also one of the portions had not been properly boned. Needless to say, we chose to eat dinner elsewhere on the other evenings. A pity because everything else was good.

Thank you for the feedback, I will bring up your comments regarding the Hake dish with our head chef and see if we can tweak it a little. Thanks, Graeme

"Another Great Stay at Mayfield Crudwell"

Great food, nice hotel and good service. Just back from a 3 day stay at Mayfield Hotel, our 3rd over the past 5 years. The quality of the food at dinner and breakfast was exceptional as always. There is a good selection of dishes on the a la carte menu which is supplemented with an excellent "specials" menu. The beef Wellington was exceptionally good last night. We had a superior room with a 6 foot wide bed! The bar always has a great selection of wines and cask ales. Good location for visiting the many picturesque towns and villages in the southern Cotswolds. Close to Westonbirt Arboretum and Highgrove (worth visiting the gardens). Staff always helpful with advice on places to visit.

Excellent 3rd visit to this hotel. Staff were very welcoming, pleasant and helpful as usual. The evening meals are of excellent quality which is one of the reasons we go back. Prawn and smoked salmon salad followed by delicious beef Wellington with local cheese board to follow was a wonderful meal to end our 3 night stay on. Lovely relaxing in the bar for a pre dinner drink listening to Van Morrison, Neil Young and others. The bed was so comfy and room had lovely view to garden. Can't fault the place at all. Will certainly be back.

"TERRIBLE Customer Service!!! - Would Not Visit Again!"

19/09/2017

I don't know why this is called the "Best Western" because it should be called the "Worst Western". I had to change rooms due to insects in my first room which was room 32 which was tiny, extremely cold and with a single bed compared to my other business partners who were put into a room with a double bed. However... The lady reception was very accommodating in regards to this and moved me to room 30. Morning breakfast was ok until I cut into my sausages and both of them were raw on the inside. The woman with the red hair did not even say good morning to us and made us feel very uncomfortable compared to the other guests for obvious reasons. Would not come back here but I'm sure they wouldn't care otherwise. The only positive would be some of the dinner and the young girls/ waitresses and the bed was very comfortable to sleep on but the lack of customer service from the reception and the breakfast staff made my overall experience terrible. It also had a very old smell as well which wasn't pleasant. My colleague also stayed in room 8 and informed reception that there was no hot water coming from her shower and after they came to the room to check it, the lady said "I'm not a plumber". This is EXTREMELY unacceptable especially as my colleague was unwell and she also informed the dinner team as well as the lady at reception at dinner. They may pride them themselves with great customer service but then why wasn't this displayed towards us? (We already know why). They need to give the place some air as it smells, maybe crack a smile or are they just not used to people of colour. I do not understand why you would work within the customer service and hospitality industry to treat people in this manner. The "dauphinoise potato" was also quite dry. Please remove the bugs from room 32. Would not be coming back here and when I visit Malmesbury again I'd be sure to advise all of my colleagues to avoid this place.

Attentive4, Manager at Best Western Mayfield House Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Guest Thank you for posting such an interesting feedback report, I felt the need to respond One little beetle in the room does not become insects we are in a rural area we have windows open. Room 32 is a single room I say again a single room which is what you paid for as per the discussion with your HO , We only had three rooms left so unfortunately you got the single and your colleagues got doubles. The room has a radiator and we would have been more than happy to turn it on for you We served 45 people for breakfast and around 65% of those had sausages and we received no complaints re under cooked sausages . The red haired lady is one of the nicest and customer focused team members we have so to say I am surprised is an under statement, we work very closely with a number of local businesses and have lots of guests that return time and time again. Please do checkout out our reviews and read the wonderful comments on this spectacular Cotswold hotel that prides itsself in delivering friendly service by people who care. I am pleased we could move you rooms and that the lady was obviously not that terrible. Yours is the first comment I have had that say we smell but I shall certainly look into it. Thank you

Fantastic relaxed weekend break in a lovely country hotel, staff really welcoming and nothing to much trouble. Rooms perfect lovely comfortable beds and just what we hoped for. Breakfast and evening meals top quality with a good selection of food to choose from. Lovely area with so much to see and easy access to the m4. Would recommend.

"Mixed review, nice location, disappointing food and room"

We were given a voucher as a wedding present for a nights stay with dinner and breakfast included. The hotel is in a lovely setting and we visited Westonbirt Arboretum nearby on our way. From the outside, the hotel looks like a lovely cosy country hotel, with a pretty garden and croquet lawn. Inside however is a slightly different story. The decor is VERY dated and tired looking, and our room wasn't particularly clean (hair in the shower) and badly in need of a paint job. The pillows were flat and rock hard. It was also really hot and the few small windows we had (overlooking a roof), didn't let in enough air to cool it down and make it comfortable. We were looking forward to dinner as the hotel website mentioned the award winning chef and use of local fresh produce. Our voucher included a main course of up to £15. I had emailed a few weeks before our stay to let the hotel know that we would need vegan options and was told that it wouldn't be a problem. I was offered just one option which was an unimaginative whole baked (and undercooked) aubergine with various other roasted vegetables on top, and a bland tomato sauce. While I do appreciate that the chef made a separate meal, it left a lot to be desired and also left me hungry as there wasn't a lot of substance to it. I would've been perfectly happy with a simple pasta dish or a veggie burger. On top of that, I was charged an extra £1.50 for my meal (no mention of this beforehand) when my partner had had a crab and hake risotto for less... Breakfast was no better. All the continental options contained dairy (pastries, cereals, yogurts etc) and there wasn't even a vegetarian cooked option, let alone vegan. So I was left with a piece of toast (fortunately they did have dairy free spread), and some melon and apple. There was no milk alternative so I had to go back to my room to get some I had brought with me in order to have a cup of tea. It would've been nice to have been offered the option of picking some of the cooked breakfast items from the menu (beans, hash browns etc), but the waitress didn't attempt to suggest which items would be suitable for my diet. So again, I was left hungry. As breakfast was included in the price of our stay, and I didn't end up eating much, I feel that to charge extra for my evening meal was unfair. The biscuits and small pots of milk in our room also contained dairy. We did however enjoy a nice drink in their well looked after garden in the evening sunshine. In general, a pleasant but somewhat disappointing stay.

Stayed here for a night on a Groupon deal with our best friend. From the moment we walked in we (all 3 of us) were made to feel so welcome. Ellie on reception was very welcoming and friendly - thanks. The food was great and those that served us couldn't do enough. Ok there were a few bits which could do with updating ( not much hot water) but overall a lovely place to stay - especially with canine in tow. We will definitely be back. Thanks all.

"Good service in comfortable hotel"

27/08/2017

A comfortable hotel, with a good sized room, if in need of a bit of décor updating. The evening meal in the restaurant was very good indeed with fresh produce and good service. Outstanding service from John the Duty Manager who helped in the morning with outing suggestions and phoning round trying to find alternative accommodation, as they were full up, following our spur of the moment request to stay an extra night.

"Dreadful stay!"

27/08/2017

We received a gift of a red letter day for a one night stay with dinner, bed and breakfast from good friends. I believe this was at a cost to them of about £160. We decided to visit the Cotswolds and picked Mayfield House Hotel as they were doggy friendly. We have a one year old cockerpoo. Upon booking we were advised there was a supplement of £12.50 per night for our dog, we happily booked. Upon arrival we not shown the common areas and were just taken to our room in the car park. Our room, number 25, was a Cottage room. We were so disappointed. The room had the windows open upon arrival, was dark and gloomy and even with the windows open, the room literally stank of dog! Whilst we have a dog, we have a nice home and holidays. Our own home doesn't smell. The bedroom and bathroom were tired looking and the furniture was very dated, the bedside light shade was cracked. The bathroom had a cheap overhead shower attachment and a shower curtain. The one plus point was the bed linen was clean even though the pillows were lumpy. (Asda sell pillows for £3 each and these are much better than those provided at Mayfield)! There was damp in the corner of the room and the wallpaper was bubbling up. Immediately outside our room was a gas boiler located on the wall right where the bedroom door opened. We couldn't see a carbon monoxide detector. As we had only booked for the one night, it was too late really to find anything else so we decided to rough it. The voucher included dinner and breakfast. We went to dinner and both ordered sirloin steak, medium. We were surprised to receive the meals within minutes, even before they were able to collect our drinks from the bar. My husband's steak arrived rare, in fact my steak was blue. I asked for it to be cooked for a longer period and when it was returned, I cut through it again and it literally ran with blood which filled the entire plate. I spoke to the waiter (a young boy) and asked if it could be cooked some more. He just laughed at me and took the plate away. He returned a minute later and sarcastically said that the chef asked "how would madam like her steak so as not to get it wrong again". I felt humiliated and we both left the restaurant. I have to add that I am 51 years of age and I have never ever felt the need to walk out of a restaurant before. We ended up having a sausage roll and a porridge pot from the local garage for our meal that evening. During the night, despite having the windows open, the smell of dog was overwhelming. The next day we realised the carpet was full of hair, the bathroom floor was dirty as well. We rose at 6am and were packed and out of there by 8am, couldn't face a shower in the bathroom or their breakfast. We tackled the manager who admitted that we were staying in a standard room (their most basic room) - the usual charge is £116 for bed and breakfast and £164 for dinner, bed and breakfast. (Please see attached photos to see if you think this was good value). When tackling him about the smell of dog in the room, and the fact that we didn't believe they clean the carpets, he announced proudly that the carpets are cleaned every 6 months! When I mentioned that I expected something better of Best Western, he said that Best Western is just a name, all the hotels are privately owned and it means nothing! The manager upon hearing of our dissatisfaction, waived the £12.50 charge for our dog and wrote off our drinks from the previous evening (lemonade (x2), a cup of tea and a Peroni). Incidentally, for the £12.50 dog surcharge, one gets nothing. Not a dog bowl, mat or a biscuit. Our friends who gave us the present of the Red Letter Day would be horrified at the appalling room and dreadful service we received. We intend taking this up with Red Letter Days/Best Western too. If you wish to have a lovely stay at Malmesbury, indeed Crudwell, please go to The Rectory, a few minutes walk away. They were very good to us, and allowed us to have breakfast with them. We booked a room, they allowed us early access so we could have a shower and feel better. We had an impeccable stay the following night there. £165 bed and breakfast, including the surcharge for our dog which goes towards deep cleaning afterwards. You couldn't tell dogs had been there and they also provide a dog cushion too. Wonderful staff, the food was sublime and it was spotlessly clean. The Mayfield House Hotel should not be called a Hotel. It is a disgrace.

We stayed in Mayfield House as we were visiting RIAT and Slimbridge and it seemed to be mid way between the two! The Hotel is quite small, very friendly and the room we had was very clean and comfortable. the food was good, the bar had real ale, and on some days the outdoor pizza oven was operated. Thoroughly recommended.

"Short break"

16/08/2017

Just enjoyed a short break and stayed Mayfield House. We are there one night and had a lovely meal, we were able to eat in the bar with our dog. Breakfast was very good, freshly cooked and plenty of choice, lots of offers of more toast, coffee etc. I agree with the comments about the room requiring decoration but the bed was extremely comfy, the room was very clean and as we had a young dog we were perfectly happy. There is some road noise at the front but not all night and we slept very well with the window open. Lovely walks on your doorstep for dogs. Another lovely Best Western

"Good Value short break"

13/08/2017

We had a two day break at the hotel. The room and bathroom was spacious, although the bathroom had a very noisy pump in a cupboard which ran every time hot water was used in rooms neighbouring ours. The breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. It is close to Malmesbury and Cirencester, delightful historic market towns on the southern edge of the Cotswolds. It is in the village of Crudwell on the main road, but the road is not particularly busy and so not too noisy. We had dinner in the restaurant on one of the nights. The food we had was excellent.

"Disappointing"

10/08/2017

Tatty furnishings in room. Inadequate shower in dated bathroom. No hot water on one morning. No disabled parking or help with luggage as no lift. Good breakfast. Public rooms ok. Nice location. Expensive for the standard provided. Have stayed in many Best Western hotels before and expected better

"Mayfield House Hotel, Crudwell."

09/08/2017

Stayed for 3 nights. A cosy and comfortable hotel. 28 rooms not small but not over busy either. Comfy beds, clean rooms and friendly staff. One of the best breakfasts we have had, always served up hot and with plenty of choice. They did a good scrambled egg. We only stayed for dinner one night as we had other things on but that was our loss as it was delicious and again well served and ample choice. A couple of areas to relax and read or to sit when having a drink from the bar. Nice small village with a few walks and a local pub to stop for a drink on the way back to the hotel should you want a change of scene. Locals friendly. Buses just down the road take you in Cirencester should you wish to have a car free day. Room 1 was comfy, nice big shower and although by the stairs it was quiet. Only 3 rooms on our landing and we were over the lobby and lounge here but there was no noise. 2 small and I larger car park ample space for all. Also a dog friendly hotel. We would not hesitate to stay here again.

"Welcomed for one night"

On our way from Scotland to Portsmouth for a channel crossing, on a Saturday. Several hotels would only book us in if we stayed for 2 nights. this hotel made us more than welcome, and, booking beforehand, through cotswold hotels site, we had a very good package which included dinner. Nice spacious room; excellent dinner, good parking and grounds, and friendly and efficient staff. It's on the list of go again if we are going south again!

"Good food, great welcome "

18/07/2017

We had an amazing 2 night stay here. We were blown away by the quality of the food and the excellent staff who all worked well as a team, specifically John and Sian. Yes, we know from the other reviews that some of the rooms need a little decoration refresh but look beyond that and the service and food quality shine through. Thank you Chef!

"An tranquil oasis four hours into a six hour journey."

18/07/2017

Hot, sticky and travel worn we arrived at the Mayfield House Hotel inquiring if they allowed dogs in the hotel and if it was possible for us to have a tray of tea and biscuits. Nothing was too much trouble. The tea came with a pot of hot water and chocolate biscuits and the dog was welcomed with opened arms. We spent an enjoyable half hour drinking tea on the edge of the croquet lawn before continuing our journey to Warwickshire. If the service we received was indicative of the hotel in general then we have found a little gem.

"Very good hotel with friendly staff and good food"

11/07/2017

Excellent stay in good location to where we wanted to visit. Food was excellent as were the staff. Very quiet at night time so a good night's sleep was had. Breakfast was excellent and customised to my requirements. My only gripe is that iti in need of modernisation of the bathroom suite. In particular the shower in room 3 which struggled to provided enough water (in fact it pulsed). tried using the mixer on the tap but could only get either very hot water or cold. Cone on Best Western, get this sorted for this lovely hotel

"Comfortable night in a semi-rural setting"

4
09/07/2017

A sprawling Cotswolds stone hotel (the antiquity of the rooms reducing towards the rear) with a delightful garden bar-restaurant facility, on a backwater road. My room was very spacious, spotlessly clean and the king bed was super comfortable. A view of bins and the large gravel car parking was compensated by sounds of cows and birds from the neighbouring farms. Disappointed by the shower which was barely beyond a dribble. Dinner was tasty and served very efficiently but the breakfast staff seemed either inexperienced or disorganised and the servings lacked polish. Nearby the town of Malmesbury is honoured by the preserved nave of its once-magnificent Norman abbey church. The source of the River Thames is promised as being just up the road - I will find it today!

04/07/2017

We only stayed for one night but will definitely return. The room was spacious and clean, comfortable large double bed. Supremely cooked scrambled eggs for breakfast and we were able to eat in a bar area so that our dog could be beside us.

"Pleasant Family Meal"

4
22/06/2017

Slightly worn and tired looking hotel but comfortable and inclusive. Trying hard to be more sophisticated but not quite getting there. Too many small details inconsistent or not particularly refined. Well cooked and presented food. Options from core menu better than specials. Vegetables just about stayed the right side of over-cooked. Lemonade from a 2l bottle was flat. Allergy awareness a bit haphazard with wafer served with ice cream, then merely removed when pointed out.

Greeted by very helpful staff to a very welcoming dog friendly room clean with everything you could possibly need great food plus the chance off taking our dog into the snug to eat our meal when ordering drinks ask for a surprise a great range off strange beers and larger a must thanks to all the staff for a great stay

"A very pleasant hotel in a beautiful part of the country"

5
19/06/2017

We spent a few days in this hotel as part of a walking group visiting the Cotswolds. It is well run, with friendly and helpful staff. The food is excellent and the hotel itself attractive, even including a croquet lawn in the garden. The only small problem we encountered in room 19 was that the shower would either run boiling hot or freezing cold, with no satisfactory temperature beyond a few seconds, as one tried to find a happy medium. However we did have a bath so that was sufficient. One also had to be careful not to bang one's head on the low beam in the room. There was plenty of parking and it was quiet at night.

"Best Western Mayfield Crudwell - Fantastic Stay!"

5
12/06/2017

I stayed at the Best Western Crudwell last week for 3 nights and had a fantastic experience. We booked two rooms for 3 adults and our dog. We had a brilliant time there and would highly recommend it. The pet friendly rooms are across the way from the hotel and have easy access to outside. The staff made our stay truly memorable and they could not have done enough for us. We particularly want to say thanks for Graeme (Duty Manager) and Sian. Both went above and beyond in helping us in every way they could. Thanks for everything! The hotel has plenty of parking and is located in a quiet little village. It has a restaurant and the food is good. There is also a restaurant/pub just about 2 mins walk from hotel which is quite trendy. This hotel loves pets and you can take your dog into reception area. They also accomodate pets in bar area so you can eat there. It was lovely to arrive in on first morning for breakfast to find a table reserved for us where we could eat breakfast with our dog....we were not expecting that at all, which was lovely. Graeme walked us through main hotel areas on arrival so we knew where everything was. Not something you normally get. The grounds of the hotel are well maintained. There is good WIFI in hotel. Its a very relaxing place. Food was very good both for breakfast and dinner. Thanks Sian for getting us sorted with freezer blocks and also the beans....its the little things! Thanks Graeme for giving us some direction on good locations to visit while staying there. Overall there is nothing I can fault this hotel with. The staff make it a truly amazing stay and would return in a heart beat.....hated to leave! Will be back

"MVH training weekend "

12/06/2017

Had a very enjoyable stay. The staff were efficient and friendly, the food was good both for breakfast and dinner, and everywhere was clean. A couple of things could have been better : the shower was a bit temperamental, the wines were overpriced, the breakfast could have done with some beans or something to add some moisture, oh yes and the ceilings are a bit low in places.

"Good place to stay if you're in area for a wedding"

4
11/06/2017

We've just returned from a 2 night stay. We were in the area to attend a wedding at Winkworth Farm which is 10mins away. The staff were friendly throughout our stay, breakfast was really tasty and the overall experience was enjoyable. Our room was a standard double and for the price paid the room was acceptable, well appointed despite being a little tired looking. The bed was really comfortable and we slept well. The only downside was the bathroom which was absolutely tiny. I'm 5ft3" and even I found the shower cubicle claustrophobic. All in all, for the price paid and given the fact we were using the hotel as a base for attending a wedding, rather than specifically choosing this hotel for a break away, we had a good stay. I would recommend this hotel for anyone attending weddings / events in the various popular venues nearby.

"mayfield house hotel"

4
05/06/2017

the staff were brilliant and the food excellent along with the service, the hotel was in a very good location but our overall stay was marked down because we were disappointed with our room. the bed was a mattress on a wooden box and very hard, we had 3 sleepless nights. The bathroom facilities were so small, well enough said and the noise was the fault of inconsiderate guests but I would go again but ask for a different room.

"WASTE OF MONEY - TOO MANY THINGS WRONG TO LIST"

1
31/05/2017

DO NOT GO TO THIS HOTEL. - The rooms are absolutely appalling, old, unclean and overpriced. Some of the staff are terribly rude and the manager or owner seems to be completely unaware of all the problems that this "motel" has. The bar is awful only serving one beer on tap. One of the staff was completely and obviously drunk on the job and the head housekeeper never seemed to work at all, maybe the cause of the disgusting rooms. A perfect example of an establishment that has totally been run into the ground.....

"2 day break"

29/05/2017

Booked through Groupon and got a smashing room .Staff were very polite and very welcoming. Good sized room on groundfloor. Breakfast cooked to order ,good selection. Evening meal on 1st night was included ,very tasty. Would gladly book again .

"Spring Break"

5
18/05/2017

We booked this hotel at the last minute. We managed to book a superior room on HB at a good rate. The room was quite large with a massive bathroom. The wardrobe was in the bathroom which we found rather quaint. The room overlooked the croquet lawn. Be prepared for creaky floorboards as it is an old building. The breakfast was cooked to order and the dinners were very good. We paid £20 for meals with an allowance of £28 off the menu. This worked out very good value. All the staff were very friendly and efficient. All in all it was an excellent break.

"Great Place to Stay"

5
17/05/2017

This is an oldish hotel but everyone was welcoming, the food was good and the price was reasonable. Despite its age the interior was modern and comfortable. We would certainly go here again. For us it was ideally located for a short break to visit a couple of nearby NT properties. Easy parking and easy to find

"no rooms available 'til November if booked through Groupon ?!"

1
15/05/2017

I called to book a room for this hotel on May 15th and was told there were no rooms available 'til November. My wife called and was told there were 2 rooms available for 7th July, but when she said it was through Groupon it was unavailable until November. This hotel obviously enjoys using Groupon for free advertising whilst not being prepared to honour the terms and conditions of Groupon ie. offer available Monday to Sunday. Very disappointed with the attitude of the duty Manager. Just because you book through Groupon does not make you any lesser person.

"Nice overnight stay"

5
04/05/2017

We came to the hotel on a one night Groupon offer as a little Bank Holiday break. We had upgraded our room before we came, and it was spacious, clean and comfortable. We had a nice evening meal in the hotel and breakfast was cooked to order and very tasty (we both had haddock and poached eggs). We had a nice walk around the village and fields and enjoyed our break very much. Would stay there again if in the area.

"Good value break"

25/04/2017

Booked a deal for two for dinner bed and breakfast. Food and service great and good value for money. Close to the pretty town of Malmesbury. Bedrooms a little tired but ours (room 3) was large and comfortable.

"A few days away with our dog"

5
23/04/2017

Booked this hotel through Pet Pyjamas which was a very easy process as hotel accepted dogs. We had a superior room which was very nice and spacious which made it easy for our dog to get comfortable and the hotel supplied dog bowls but no bedding mats as stated. The food was excellent and staff very pleasant and helpful so much so our dog was supplied with a bowl of tea at breakfast. It was really nice having our dog being able to sit with us at meal times in an area where other dogs could also sit with their owners.Nothing was to much for the staff who made a big fuss of all the dogs staying. A very nice experience for all of us and a big Thank you to all who work their especially the Breakfast waitresses.

"Marvelous weekend"

4
22/04/2017

We were in a party of 26 staying for the weekend and the stay was memorable. The service provided was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for the efficient staff. The variety and quality of food for dinner and breakfast was outstanding. Requests were speedily dealt with. The organisation by Linda the manager was very good. No question that many of us will return.

"Dog Friendly Hotel - Excellent"

5
19/04/2017

We were travelling with our 2 small dogs and this hotel was advertised as being dog friendly which is why we chose it. It is in a small village called Crudwell and within walking distance of two local pubs, one gastro pub called the Potting Shed and the other called the Wheatsheaf. We were booked on bed, breakfast and evening meal basis so only wanted light lunches and we were well catered for at the Wheatsheaf pub - turn right out of the hotel and walk for 10 mins. It's easy to overlook this pub but it was a gem of a find. The dog-friendly rooms are just opposite the hotel and the room we had (29) was huge as was the bathroom. It was lovely and clean and even big white fluffy bathrobes were provided. The towels were good quality and nice and thick and fluffy and there was tea and coffee making facilities in the room - along with some biscuits. The hotel staff were lovely and very friendly. The hotel meals were from a limited a la carte menu and were very tasty - an allowance of £28 is given towards your evening meal. We were able to eat our evening meals in the bar area with our dogs nestling under the table. Breakfast was in the main restaurant and once again we were allowed to bring the dogs in. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel and if we returned to the Cotswolds, would certainly return to this hotel.

"Disappointing"

19/04/2017

We stayed a The Best Weatern Hotel as we have previously stayed in there hotels before. This time we were disappointed. When we arrived we were a bit early so our room was not ready which was ok but when we went back 15 minutes later as we were asked to see if our room was ready the man behind the reception was stuffing his face with food and just grunted and knoded at us which I thought was extremely rude. We booked a superior double room well I wouldn't of said it was that to me it was a ordinary double room with a larger bed. Rooms did not match pictures on websites. The breakfast was good and plentyful and the waiting staff were friendly, polite and helpful. Hotel overal was a bit tired.

"Excellent hotel very good service"

17/04/2017

This hotel is what you would expect from a best western. It is a clean hotel. the rooms are a little basic but well equipped and clean. What stands out at this hotel is the garden - lovely. The food which was superb and the staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them.

"Great beds, nice location"

3
11/04/2017

I arrived early evening on Sunday and got a nice room with a queen size bed which was VERY comfy. There was a desk in my room which was great as I had some preparation to do for Monday morning. Interior is slightly dated throughout, especially in the restaurant. Breakfast was nice, freshly made and included with my room all for a VERY REASONABLE price, especially considering I booked 4 hours before I arrived... (via booking.com). One note... I had to wait a GOOD 5 minutes in the morning for the shower to go from cold to warm, the pressure was very low too. I wont make a big deal about this as I was rushing out and didn't have time to make staff aware so I don't feel fair making it a big deal.

"Nothing too much"

5
10/04/2017

Very good welcome and shown, very quickly to our room, which was functional and acceptable. The food, over two nights, was very good, well designed, prepared and served by the team at Mayfield. Nothing and I repeat nothing was too much trouble. The staff helped us to relax, were always there for us and all had excellent smiles. Well done. The hotel was perfectly placed for local amenities and the price was competitive too. Would we go back, certainly.

"Tired!"

03/04/2017

Stayed here with my partner for one night. The room was clean, but quite tired and shabby. The breakfast waiting staff were very pleasant, but overall I wasn't impressed. The breakfast was just 'ok'. We wouldn't opt to stay here again.

"Very comfortable stay"

01/04/2017

Although purchased as a deal through Groupon I discovered it was cheaper to put together myself. However, was given a £20 refund. Hotel very attractive, comfortable and staff very polite and friendly. Dinner and breakfast was excellent choice and variety. Even purchasing wine wasn't too pricey. Loved the character and individualism of rooms and building although not suitable for those with mobility and other disabilities especially as there are quite a number of steps around the building. Peaceful situation with lovely garden with tables and chairs which would be lovely for warmer day. Would recommend and may be back. Thank you to all staff.

"Two nights through Pets Pyjamas"

4
29/03/2017

We (my wife, my dog and I, stayed for a two night break (through Pets Pyjamas - reviewed separately) 26 - 28th March 2017. There were a couple of (very) minor issues so I will note them first: On Sunday night there were additions to the menu - roast beef and roast lamb. We decide to try these. I ordered the beef and my wife the lamb. When the meals arrived my wife asked for some mint sauce, none arrived and we soon found out why... both meals were beef. And it looked like that sort of processed beef usually found masquerading as carved beef. We decided not to worry as it didn't look TOO bad and we both ate it all. Reasonably tasty and quite acceptable. When settling the bill we felt there were some small discrepancies, difficult to itemise and not worth spoiling our experience there BECAUSE.... The staff were all excellent - beyond reproach! Special mention to duty manager John who was absolutely first class. The service throughout was superb and faultless. All other meals were terrific, well presented, hot, and served professionally. The room we had was in the "annex" across from the main building, specifically for pet owners I think, and was spotlessly clean, spacious and comfortable without any trace of previous pets or their owners. A highly enjoyable experience and if it wasn't for the beef/lamb episode we would have awarded 5/5.

"fAB STAY"

5
28/11/2016

Rooms are a little dated, but very comfortable and this was by outweighed by the excellent service. Staff carried our bags and provided screen wash for our car in the morning. Great breakfast although fried bread a little to oily. Overall a great stay.

"Ideal base for south cotsworlds"

4
21/11/2016

Nice overnight stay, ideally located for touring the south Cotswolds (near Malmesbury and Tetbury) and not too far from Swindon which we were visiting too. Easily checked in by the duty manager, John, and shown to our room. Bedroom, room 6, was cosy (restricted head-room getting in the bathroom), clean and warm. Food in the restaurant was excellent! Dinner was a credit to the chef, Nick Batstone, and his team - absolutely first class. Breakfast was good too. One minor niggle is that room 6 is directly above a dinning area for a large group, of which there was on the night we stayed, and you can hear every part of every conversation so not best for those wishing to retire to bed early (didn't really bother us).

"A jewel in the Cotswolds"

5
17/11/2016

The staff in this hotel really are the best in the world nothing was a problem and the food was excellent (try their tuna sandwich at lunch). The rooms were very comfortable if just a bit dated however the hotel is full of character. Would I stay there again YES PLEASE

"Good location near Malmesbury, Westonbirt and Tetbury"

4
13/11/2016

We booked this hotel as part of a deal including tickets to Westonbirt Arboretum. Staff were very welcoming. Parts of this hotel are really old so expect uneven floors and narrow staircases. Rooms are comfortable and warm. Breakfasts are very good with selection of cereals, fruit and juices. Cooked breakfast is made to order and I have to recommend the poached eggs which were perfect! The dinner menu is a little limited particularly if you are staying several days but was fine for a couple of nights. The food is well cooked and well presented. All staff are very friendly and courteous. We would certainly stay at the Mayfield again.

"Disappointing stay."

09/11/2016

We have been going to this hotel over many years and for the first time we were very disappointed. We had a room in the cottage which looked as though it hadn't been decorated or refurbished for years. It was basically furnished and was cold and the heating didn't come on until we'd gone for breakfast or dinner. The towel rail was small and seemed to work intermittently so didn't dry the towels. The shower head over the bath was very small and not efficient. Breakfast was up until 9.30am. We went at 9 am. and found there was very little left on the buffet table and other people were complaining that food was not topped up. Service was slow and there didn't seem to be enough staff. However the evening meals were excellent although the bar wasn't good. We would not recommend this hotel and will not be returning.

"One night stay"

5
07/11/2016

Room was excellent, dinner likewise. The bed was comfortable and the staff polite, courteous and helpful. We visited Malmesbury, Tetbury & Westonbirt Arboretum. The scenery in this area is typical wondrous Cotswolds. Thoroughly recommended

"Weekend Break"

5
06/11/2016

Have just returned from a weekend break at Mayfield House. From the moment of our arrival to the day of departure, everything was great. Our room was very well furnished and was extremely comfortable. The food was outstanding. The staff were very smart and courteous, and went out of their way to be helpful. Would I go back. You bet.

"Overall Good, but a few irritations"

3
06/11/2016

Stayed for one night B & B. Chose it for proximity to Westonbirt Arboretum. Very welcoming. Bar serves 1 real ale, superb! Room was very clean. (Room 18) Bed was a box spring, sounded like there was a dog trapped underneath, hence only 3* for sleep. We were lucky, a good properly plumbed shower cubicle. Our friends had a room upstairs with a weak electric shower. However they like the larger room. Breakfast. OK. Our experience suggests that you have a 1 in 5 chance of a decent poached/fried egg. It is these little things which spoil the place in our opinion.

"Fantastic Stay."

5
03/11/2016

We had 4 nights at this delightful family run hotel. The staff were the most friendly and helpful we have ever met. Nothing was too much trouble for them. The room was very spacious, clean and had everything required. The bed was very comfortable with plenty of pillows. John the assistant manager went out of his way to make you feel at home, and Sian the waitress was exceptional. The food was wonderful, good variety, well cooked and beautifully presented. A good wine list was also held. In all this was an exceptional hotel and we will be returning to be spoilt again. A good car park and within easy reach of many lovely places in the Cotswolds. Thank you to everyone.

"Meal out"

3
01/11/2016

Lovely dinning area, food was good but abit pricey, staff where warm and welcoming, service was great, asked for medium done steak but it came to the table nearly still alive! Fish option was a bit bland, I wouldn't rush back again in a hurry, only went for food so can't comment on the rooms

"Great couple of days"

4
31/10/2016

Just returned from a two night break at the Mayfield with tickets to Westonbirt arboretum included and first night evening meal, breakfast was also included. Very reasonably priced with an excellent restaurant. We had our second night meal at the Mayfield as well and were not disappointed on either occasion. Room clean, warm, and whilst not luxurious was adequate and we had a good nights sleep on a super king size bed. Staff all pleasant and obliging which is always nice to experience as it is not always that way in some hotels. Would we return...of course. Thanks Mayfield.

"hope to stay again"

4
29/10/2016

Although we only stayed one night we greatly enjoyed our visit. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The room was comfortable and pleasant. The restaurant was excellent, above what we had expected from a hotel restaurant. We were not on a holiday visit, but very much hope we can go back to this lovely part of the country and would certainly be happy to stay at the hotel again.

"Autumn colour"

4
26/10/2016

Went to see winter colour at Westonbirt arboretum and this was a convenient hotel. Have been many times before but now under new management - good food and good location for a Cotswold visit.. A friendly place to stay

"Friendly staff, well situated hotel"

4
19/10/2016

Stayed with my wife for 2 nights on a Great Little Breaks deal. The hotel is ideally placed for visiting the nearby towns, and Westonbirt Arboretum. We didn't like our first room very much, but the staff were very helpful in changing it for us, even though they were pretty much full up. The superior rooms are (obviously) better than the standard ones (we had a night in each!), although the beds in both were very comfortable. The hotel is a little tired, but it is clean, the atmosphere is friendly, and the evening meal and breakfasts were good. Plenty of parking on site, and the hotel is on the main road, so easy to find (the road isn't noisy though!).

"Cotswold comfort"

4
30/09/2016

An excellent hotel with good food in a quiet location. We were booked into an upstairs room but as my wife suffers from arthritis we asked to move to ground level. This was readily agreed and the new room was very comfortable.

"Excellent Hotel"

5
29/09/2016

We stayed for one night en route to a holiday. The hotel decor is a little tired, but apart from that it was a marvellous stay. Godd accommodation, exceleent food, and very, very good staff. Thoroughly recommend it. Hope to be back.

"Comfortable quiet location"

4
29/09/2016

Room 3 - Very comfortable bed in a nice spacious room with all facilities provided. Very clean and quiet giving a good night's sleep. Large bathroom with plenty of hot water. Staff very friendly. The hotel is on a through country road but no noticeable traffic noise at night to disturb sleep. Whilst the food in the hotel for dinner appeared fine we decided to eat in the nearby (walking distance) Potting Shed pub and found the food excellent quality and presentation. Location of hotel is great for Malmesbury, Cirencester etc.

"Another pleasant visit"

5
22/09/2016

We have visited this hotel several times and hope to do so in the future. Pleasant friendly staff & excellent food. Plenty of seating in garden. Comfortable bedroom. On a bus route and many local attractions within easy reach. Ample parking.

"A gem in the heart of the Cotswolds!"

20/09/2016

I've just returned from a weekend away with my brass band at the Mayfield House Hotel in Crudwell. What a brilliant hotel right in the heart of the Cotswolds! The hotel is fantastic, very clean, great location and perfect for anyone visiting Cheltenham/Cirencester/Gloucester. We ate in the hotel both nights (as well as breakfast) and the food is exquisite! Lamb shank to die for! I'd also like to give a big shout out to the staff too who went out of their way to make sure we were all catered for and our stay was as enjoyable as possible. A big thanks to Graeme and his team. I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who is wanting to visit the Cotswolds or surrounding areas. I hope to return again soon.

"Perfect for the Cotswolds"

5
14/09/2016

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times and it has become a firm favourite. Well situated for the Cotswolds, but also for Gloucester and surrounds, it continues to excel. Food is excellent, rooms well appointed, and the staff provide exceptional service. This is one I will continue to visit for business and pleasure.

"Lovely quiet hotel"

07/09/2016

Very pleasant atmosphere, staff welcoming and friendly. Food good. We didn't have any problems, however, it was clear from other guests that if there were any, they were minor and dealt with quickly. Felt like a family.

"Excellent lunch"

5
02/09/2016

We live in Wiltshire and are always looking for somewhere new for lunch. I had passed by the Mayfield House on many occasions but never thought of it as a lunch venue until idly looking through some local publicity where it got a positive mention. I rang. The telephone was answered very promptly and a lady who I now know to be Linda advised that lunch was available every day of the week and that we would be welcome on our chosen date. The booking was taken in a friendly but professional manner. We arrived on time on a lovely late summer day and made our way through the back garden to reception where Linda, wearing the badge of Manager, was working. She immediately devoted herself to our requirements offering a variety of indoor and outdoor locations and because of the sunshine we opted for a table outside with a view of the tidy garden. Linda looked after everything from taking the drinks order, guiding us with the menu choices and serving the food. This she did efficiently striking just the right balance between being friendly without intrusion. The food selection was good from the a la carte menu but there was also a choice of lighter bar meals available. A ham hock terrine was chosen as a starter for both of us and was appreciated; main courses of corn fed chicken and lamb shank were equally well received and we finished with tasty desserts and coffee. All the food was obviously freshly prepared, well cooked, tasty and excellently presented. Although we were eating outside we took a look at the indoor restaurant which appeared inviting and well laid out. Highly recommended.

02/09/2016

This is an unusual hotel and appears to be a number of cottages amalgamated together. We had a room in a cottage type building across the drive from the main building. The room was clean, roomy and comfortable but nothing special. The staff were excellent as was the evening meal and the breakfast. Service was good.

"Brilliant service"

5
31/08/2016

Apologies for the spelling I believe the name to be Endi (Italian bar man) . What a lovely man. Nothing was too much trouble . His service and attention to his customers was 5*****. We had a lovely meal and felt welcome at the Best Western based on your service. Thank you from the ploughman girls ;-)

"Lovely hotel and friendly staff "

4
30/08/2016

Stayed here for one night with my husband and our dog. Our accommodation was separate to the hotel, very lovely room with a separate dresser so quite spacious. Located 2 minute walk from the potting shed pub which serves excellent food and hotel surrounded by lovely fields. It is also 15 min drive away from the Cotswolds water park.

"Pet friendly, traditional and charming"

5
30/08/2016

We stayed for a single night (Sunday) and chose the hotel as we could take our dog along. Great location (edge of the Cotswolds), ample parking, rooms are reasonable (pet friendly rooms are reserved for guests with pets), bed comfy and everything worked. Coffee and tea facilities in the room. Lovely gardens. We dined at the hotel in the evening and the menu is substantial and varied (AA rosette for the food) and our meals were excellent. Breakfast is ordered from the menu too so no buffet. Staff were attentive, friendly and knowledgeable of the local area. The price (mid-high) reflected the location and quality of the dining experience so overall represented good value. Recommended.

"Visit to Malesbury"

29/08/2016

THe Mayfeild Hotel is a quaint little hotel but overall experience was excellent. Good location on the edge of the Cotswolds. Lovely grounds and the staff were excellent and very attentive. Resturant food was excellent if a little pricey.

"A Break to Remember"

5
28/08/2016

We have just returned from the Mayfield having spent 6 nights there. We have had a great stay and the staff are very accommodating and nothing was too much trouble. We do not normally book dinner but as we did not know the area we did on this occasion and we were not disappointed. The food was really good every night. Our son is a plain eater and the menu was able to be adapted for him so there were no sauces etc. I am gluten free which was again no problem at all, there was always gluten free bread available and in the room on the tea and coffee table there was a sealed jar with gluten free shortbread in which was a lovely thought (they were great) and a first in a hotel we have stayed at. The garden is very pleasant and my son and husband enjoyed having a go at croquet (not very well but fun anyway). We had a family superior room which was very roomy and comfortable with everything replenished on a daily basis. The staff are very knowledgable and were able to answer the many questions we asked about the area and how to get various places. The information provided in the room about the Cotswolds is extensive. We would not hesitate to go back to the Mayfield and recommend it to family and friends.

"Not up to Best Western standards."

2
28/08/2016

We booked into this hotel 2 weeks ago with our little dog, on arrival we had to ask for a fly spray there was lots of flies all over. The room was dingy and so out dated. Half a toilet roll on the holder we had to ask for a toilet roll. The carpets are in need of a good clean.I found a long black hair in the bed and on the bathroom floor. The shower was old fashioned as well. The walls are filthy and all marked the stone on one wall was mouldy and the room smelled of damp, normally Best western hotels are immaculate thats why we use them! We actually left a day early as we couldn't spend another night there. We didn't complain as we really didn't want to risk another bad room. On the plus side the staff are very helpful and the breakfast was lovely.

"Excellent dinner"

4
27/08/2016

Had a great superior ground floor twin room in stables annex chosen for my mum's needs with advice from hotel when booking by phone. The room and wet room were of a high standard and spacious, particularly suitable for my mum with decreasing mobility. The patio doors were a real plus to open for air movement when the weather was scorching! The main hotel ground floor does have one or two steps in places between the different levels but there was even a handily placed grab rail for my mum for the couple of steps into the dining room. The menu choice and quality of food at dinner was well worth paying for the DB&B option. I'd recommend the restaurant for dinner for none residents too.

"Friendly small hotel"

5
23/08/2016

We visited the hotel recently and had a lovely 2 day break. The staff went out of their way to accommodate our needs. We took our little dog who was made a fuss of from the word go. The staff addressed her by her name each time they saw her. A special thank you to Linda

One thing that you cannot fault about this hotel is the staff and the quality of the food. Where this hotel lets itself down (hence the 3 out of 5) is the quality of the rooms. I found the mattress to hard and possibly too old, the decor is slightly out of date and could do with a refurbishment. On top of this the shower in the morning was either scalding hot or freezing cold, no middle ground. As we stayed with family following a wedding we didn't have the availability to look for other hotels, so didn't realise this hotel was dog friendly, which is fine, except the wet dog smell is everywhere. Plus side, dinner was great and breakfast was really good too.

"Good quality hotel with excellent food!"

4
21/08/2016

Mayfield house is ideally situated for exploring Malmesbury and the Cotswold Water and Country Parks. The hotel rooms are a little dated but are clean and comfortable, with hardly any noise from other rooms or traffic. There are no pool or spa facilities however the bar and restaurant are both excellent. In particular, the food in the restaurant is extremely high quality. There are a few steps and low ceilings so perhaps best to discuss with the hotel if anyone in your group has mobility issues. We stayed on a pre-booked dinner bed-and-breakfast deal which represented superb value for money. The staff are friendly, courteous, and can't do enough to help you. Everyone we met served us with a smile, and that set the tone for a really enjoyable stay. Overall it was a good hotel and we'd happily return!

"A lovely small hotel that goes the extra mile"

4
20/08/2016

Staff were welcoming and always trying that bit harder to make sure you had a good stay. Standard of the rooms varies (we've been in 3 different rooms in the last month) but all have been clean. Reasonable breakfast which we got to eat outside overlooking the lawn in the sunshine. It's a bit remote but would happily stay again.

"Friendly with a capital F"

09/08/2016

My wife and I stayed for one night with our dog . Denzel (our dog) was not just accepted but warmly welcomed , he had just as good service as we did . All of the staff were very courteous , polite efficient and friendly . The menu was varied and the food ( including breakfast) was of a very high standard . The room was starting to show signs of old age but was very clean and comfortable . Overall a very enjoyable stay and I would recommend this hotel to anyone .

"Great character"

4
02/08/2016

We stayed here for the WOMAD festival, and it is definitely better than not washing in a tent for three nights. If you want a bland designer hotel, this is not the place for you. It is an old rambling house with 28 very individual rooms. The upsides of the place are: Very helpful and friendly staff All the basics work with all the amenities from wifi to kettles and irons etc Wonderful terrace to sit out and have drinks, meals etc They take breakfast seriously: kippers, also black pudding with the full english (but tinned fruit,,,) Really nice garden out the back to laze in, with croquet lawn Easily accessible by taxi from Kemble station (80 minutes to London), to Malmesbury (worth a visit) and WOMAD Really not many downsides: the finish is showing its age. That comes with character. It was pricey: £145 per night including breakfast, but that was probably a premium for WOMAD when accomodation is in very short supply locally. Book early if you want to be there for the festival. We stayed in room 7 which overlooks the garden - the only downside is that we got to hear the minute detail of how every member of a family fell ill, died and at what age. You can hear conversations from the terrace very clearly.

"The Perfect Base For The Cotswolds"

31/07/2016

Just had four amazing days in The Mayfield .The staff made us feel at home from the moment we stepped inside and nothing was too much trouble for them .We stayed in room 12 and it was spacious and spotless . The bed was one of the comfiest we have slept in , so comfy in fact we had to set our alarm for the last three nights to stop us oversleeping......Breakfast was first class , and the service was the same .The evening meals were as goodnas we have eaten anywhere , cooked to perfection with an excellent wine list to chose from .....It really is the perfect base to explore the Cotswolds but beware !........The Hotel , the grounds and the staff make it the sort of place you just might want to spend your days there relaxing.

"Overnight in the Cotswolds"

31/07/2016

We booked a Superior Twin room (29) for one nights stay for us and our little Pug. We were greeted by Graham on the front desk and from that point on we were very impressed by all the staff at the Mayfield. The room was excellent, clean , well appointed, excellent walk in wet room en-suite. We had an excellent evening meal and our Pug was catered for in the snug. Food was great and so was the service. Breakfast was the same, full English and Continental whatever takes your fancy. All in all a very good family run hotel with excellent staff, we will definitely return for more visits.

"Lovely hotel with excellent, friendly service"

31/07/2016

We stopped off late one evening as a family of 4 on our way home from Cornwall up to NW England looking for a room and the welcome was second to none. A room was sorted out last minute and nothing was too much trouble. The welcome was perfect as was the friendlyness shown throughout our one night stay. The room was perfect and very comfortable. The location and surroundings gorgeous. The breakfast very nice. Will definitely use this hotel for a suitable stay in the Cotswolds again. Thank you!!

"Dog friendly weekend away"

Over night stay in the Cotswolds , last minute booking and we were very lucky to find this place . Beautiful weather so we were able to have dinner in the garden overlooking croquet lawn . Couldn't fault the food or accommodation . Delightful dog friendly cottage in courtyard , very pleasant accommodating staff will definitely return . Amazing walks around Melmsbury too with historic places of interest .

"Room 11"

26/07/2016

We paid for a Superior Double room and were given room 11. The pressure of the hot water was extremely low and almost made the shower redundant. The bed was extremely soft and made for an uncomfortable nights sleep

"Service was outstanding"

25/07/2016

We spent two nights at this hotel out in the cotswolds. The hotel was quite nice, small and intimate. It has parking and is 10 minutes from Malmesbury in the car. Aside from the hotel though it was the service that blew us away. All of the staff were absolutely lovely, smiley and happy to help. The general manager John was unbelievable like, really went the extra mile for us. He was all too happy to help and even helped me organise flowers to be ready in the room. The food at the restaurant was fanastic. We ate out the second night and wished we had eaten at the hotel again. Down to the service more than anything else I wouldn't even consider staying at a different hotel if I was back in the area.

"Relaxing and special"

24/07/2016

We LOVED this hotel. It was peaceful and the chap on the front desk was lovely. In fact all the staff were great. There is only one problem - we had failed to withdraw any cash so didn't leave a tip! This was so awful because it's always nice to reward excellent service but there was no cash point in the village so we have to get everything put on the bill. Apologies to all of you if you're reading this! You know who you are. (Sad face) Dinner was wonderful. Smoked salmon and lamb shank for me and smoked chicken breast and steak for my husband, in a romantic and unhurried restaurant with ADORABLE staff. We will return, this time with proper English money!

"Very attentive service! "

16/07/2016

My husband and I stayed here the night before he completed an Ironman in the area. We booked on a dinner, bed and breakfast rate based on reading excellent reviews online. When we arrived we were greeted by John who could not have been more helpful and attentive. He immediately showed us up to our room, made arrangements to store my husbands bike securely and for him to have a take away breakfast due to the horrific early start for his event. The hotel is beautiful, comfortable very picturesque with lovely gardens and even croquet! Comfortable beds, spacious room and bathrooms with plenty of amenities. Dinner in the restaurant was superb and the service was excellent. Lovely bar with a great selection of wines and beers, so very enjoyable overall. Not yet had sampled the breakfast but if everything else is anything to go by then it will be excellent!

"Brilliant break"

Never been to this hotel before truly a hidden gem,the room the staff, and the food are outstanding, special mention to John so helpful and courteous as where all the staff, the gardens are nicely kept and pleasant to sit out and enjoy a drink from the bar. Plenty of parking, evening meals where very good and a great choice, recommend the lamb shank and Dover sole. Breakfast is part buffet style, and English breakfast cooked to order. Will definitely be going back very soon.

Stayed here as a couple for 2 nights B&B over the Easter hols. Quick check in. Room spotlessly clean with all amenities needed. Breakfast very good. Ate in the restaurant on both nights of our stay - very good food and fabulous service. This hotel is on a very busy main road so if you are allocated a room at the front, be prepared for noise from passing traffic (earplugs solved this problem for me). Only criticism was during checkout - we wasn't asked if we had enjoyed our stay - we had, but it just implied that the chap dealing with us couldn't have cared less if we had or hadn't. Shame.

"Good hotel, great service, excellent hotel."

Stayed for a weekend for RIAT, we were initially underwhelmed by appearances, but quickly looked beyond them to the lovely staff, and exceptional food. Though the hotel is starting to look a little dated, it still had a certain charm lacking in more modern hotels. Breakfast was good, dinner absolutely wonderful on each of the dishes we tried, and during every meal the staff were polite, quick, attentive, and considerate. One slight niggle..... We stayed in room 1, which if you're a light sleeper, suffers from what appears to be the main boiler for the hotel being located in the rooms bathroom...... next to the door to the bedroom. Anytime hot water was used, off it went, and it whistles!! That said, we'd happily stay again.

Hotel is situated in quite village, car park is small (first in, best position) The interior is clean and tidy but a little dated Food is very good, although drink prices are a little high and no wine list available Breakfast time could be an issue for some people who are not on holiday or want an early start

"5 star"

08/07/2016

This is a five star hotel pretending to be 3 star ! Quality of staff and hotel is one of the very best. Well done to the management for their attention to detail. If you want to stay even for a short time do not miss this establishment!

We just went for a cream tea. we received a warm welcome, lovely large fresh scone, adequate cream and jam and a good pot of tea. Lovely surroundings. There is a very good chance of them seeing us again

"Not bad for an overnight stay in the Cotswolds"

3
03/07/2016

Hotel was in a very good location to tour the Cotswolds. Decor a bit dated, and need to run around under the shower to get wet. Staff very friendly and service good. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent and gives the gastropub next door a run for its money. A little lacking in atmosphere. Overall a good experience but for the price of a basic twin room budget hotels would give this one a run for the money - except for the location. Despite this I would visit again but would request a room with a more powerful shower.

"Comfortable Country Accommodation"

3
03/07/2016

This is an older building but comfortable and homely. The outside seating area and croquet lawn are appealing in fine weather. The breakfast selection - buffet or full menu - is comprehensive, fresh and appetising and served by efficient, friendly staff. The restaurant itself is light and with a garden view. Our room was a better size than expected, clean, serviced daily but dated, with basic amenities. The shower was erratic and low pressure. There is free wifi, of average speed, in the room, plus tea & coffee making facilities and a hair dryer. An iron was available when requested.

"Celebration lunch for my 90 year old Mother."

5
28/06/2016

After being let down by another local pub, at short notice Mayfield House did us proud. It's a wonderful place for a celebration, the garden is lovely for a pre-lunch drink, the area we were in for the lunch was quite private & we were able to decorate both the room & table to our liking. There was plenty of choice on the menu, the food was excellent quality, well cooked & presented & the service by all the staff was second to none. They were all very welcoming & professional. The whole lunch & afternoon went like clockwork & I have no hesitation recommending the restaurant to anyone wanting to hold a special celebration there.

"A lovely place to stay"

5
28/06/2016

This hotel is set in the idyllic Cotswolds. The whole area has an absolutely chocolate box' charm about it in spite of being extremely easy to access from major routes. Although the hotel is small everything is very well run. The rooms are delightful. The staff are welcoming and efficient. The food is very good. Altogether a great experience.

"Enjoyable stay in the Cotswold"

4
24/06/2016

The Mayfield House Hotel is set in beautiful countryside, good for walkers, with access to nearby busier towns. The Hotel itself has an excellent restaurant, with a good menu. We were visiting as a group and made use of the lovely gardens and outside seating. The menu was varied and well presented, nice well stocked bar too. The bedrooms were adequate, but tired, desperately requiring a 'make-over'. The bedding, although clean, was old and faded and the furnishing was cheap & cheerful, the room could have done with a good spring clean too. If you are a light sleeper ask for a room at the back of the hotel as the road is quite busy all through the night. The hotel does have a couple ot outside rooms for guests with a dog, which is a plus. Nice friendly helpful staff made our enjoyable.

"Still superb"

5
16/06/2016

This was our second visit, and it was superb. Frank and staff offer a warm welcome, attentive service, and excellent food. We can find nothing to be critical about, and would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. Ideally situated for Gloucester, Tetbury, and the Cotswolds.

"Excellent value, well worth a stay"

11/06/2016

Staff helpful & friendly, food excellent, good value, & DOG FRIENDLY! They do a package which includes a meal allowance, this was more than adequate, the food was excellent and staff efficient Rooms clean, were able to sit away from main restaurant with our door for both dinner & breakfast, one the whole they were very accommodating, Situated near Malmesbury. Would definitely recommend this hotel especially to dog owners

"Home Away from Home"

09/06/2016

We just happened upon Mayfield House when looking for a place to stay around Malmesbury and convenient to our visit to Highgrove. We are so glad we found it! The highlight of our stay was the staff. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. The hotel is small enough to get to know almost everyone and yet big enough to have numerous amenities including a full service restaurant, bar and croquet lawn. There is free wifi, but it was a bit spotty so I spent a bit of time in the lobby where the reception was better. And they had a computer that guests can use, which is very convenient when traveling. I also noticed umbrellas, which looked like they were available for guests if needed. It was a nice little touch. We loved our room. We were in a triple and it was quite large and very comfortable. We had a wonderful time and I'd like to say "hi" to the staff and I hope we were as good guests as you were hosts.

"Lovely staff & food"

09/06/2016

Stayed here for 6 nights over the space of 2 weeks for work and stayed in 3 different rooms (due to checking in and out not because there was anything wrong with them.) I had issues on a Saturday night due to some really selfish guests who had returned from a wedding screaming and shouting in the halls and slamming doors drunk until 4.30am (so I then had to go to work after 3 hours sleep.) I requested to move rooms the next morning as I couldn't afford for this to keep happening as I was here to work not on holiday. The staff on the desk were so lovely (I hate complaining) and apologised even though it was in no way their fault these guests couldn't behave and moved me to a much bigger, quieter room immediately where I had no issues whatsoever. I ate in the restaurant most nights and the food was always excellent and the staff so polite. (Recommend the salted caramel brownie.) Managed to pick up wifi in all of the 3 rooms I stayed in so could watch Netflix in the evenings. Overall I had a great stay apart from the one little incident which wasn't the hotels fault but they still rectified it without question. The staff really make this place, everyone was so friendly and asking me about my day etc and I would definitely recommend. Thank you for a great stay!

"Thoroughly Recommend This Hotel "

06/06/2016

We stayed for one night with a dinner B&B package. We brought with us a 5 year old Labrador and 11 month chocolate Labrador puppy. Cannot praise the staff, the service, the food, the location enough. We were so well looked after. Every effort was made to accommodate the dogs and there was a fabulous area in which the dogs could have a really good, safe walk off lead. Haven't experienced such excellent service or such friendly, helpful staff before Very impressed and would happily return

"Great location, great food"

5
02/06/2016

We pre booked this hotel, a dinner bed and breakfast package, as we were coming in to Heathrow from a long flight. For us, the location was perfect as we were travelling on to the west of England but we had time to explore some of the Cotswold area first. We arrived to a friendly welcome and we were shown to a spacious room with adjoining bathroom. All was clean and well equipped. Food in the restaurant was first rate, both at dinner and breakfast. O

"Reasonable hotel with excellent restaurant"

4
31/05/2016

We stayed here on a dinner bed and breakfast rate booked at short notice. The dinner was chosen from the A la Carte Menu and service was reasonable although there was a constant swapping of servers! The food was very good, well presented and there was a good selection of meat, a fish option and one veggie options on the main courses. The breakfast consisted of a buffet with cereal, fruit and yoghurt plus the usual hot options cooked to order and again was good quality. The room was a good size, clean and comfortable but a little dated in terms of the decor. There was a minor irritation in our room in that we could hear the hot water tank or similar on and off all night so earplugs would be handy. The owner popped round at breakfast to check everything had been okay with our stay which was a nice touch. Should the need arise again we would happily return.

"Comfortable, v friendly staff, great food but v noisy dawn chorus"

4
29/05/2016

The hotel is beautifully placed for the Cotswolds and is a comfortable and attractive hotel with large, well-equipped rooms. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfasts are great and dinner was great - the Old Spot pork belly was excellent, as was the sole. Excellent local cheeses and good, decently-priced wine. The downside is the noise at night from creaky floors and thin walls. I didn't really want to hear the loud sounds of a woman in lustily enjoying some form of physical activity - I suspect not yoga - and the dawn chorus woke us at 4.15 each morning. The crows in a tree next to the hotel is packed with them.

"Comfy hotel with very caring staff"

3
28/05/2016

Very welcoming on arrival and cases taken up to room which was a relief as the stairs were a bit steep. Room freshly decorated, very clean and bright with welcoming tea/coffee making facilities and even some gluten free biscuits! Shower good and only criticisms would be the bathroom floor could do with refreshing and the chair needed recovering or at least a cushion to cover the worn seat. The staff were all very helpful, bright and friendly and nothing was too much trouble.

"Cotswold Comfort"

4
18/05/2016

Picturesque, charming and plenty of character. Good service, clean in all areas we had access to. Good facilities in our room, clean, nice view, kettle etc for a brew, TV. Bathroom clean with shower head over bath, shower performance poor, the only let down of our stay. Good breakfast, traditional English in our case with cereal, but continental option. Staff very helpful. Plenty of parking available. Has restaurant but we arrived too late to try it out

This is our second visit with our rescue dog. It is such a joy with delicious food and lovely staff. We are made so welcome including the dog. We have been twice now .Our first time was such a positive experience as first time staying at a hotel with our dog.

"Excellent Staff"

5
13/05/2016

I have stayed here on 2 occasions while visiting family in the area. The hotlel is a lovely quaint building and the food is excellent but its most outstanding feature is its staff. From the moment you check in you are made to feel welcome. Never once when ordering at the bar or restaurant was I asked for my room number, they instinctively knew. Always welcoming and helpful.

"Great base for a weekend"

5
04/05/2016

As a group of friends, we have an annual weekend away and this year we selected the Mayfield House. The rooms are the fairly standard Best Western offering, clean, comfortable and with good fittings. All good there but what makes the hotel stand out is the excellent food and more especially, the staff. Everybody we came into contact with was cheerful, helpful and positive. Nothing was too much trouble for any of them and they provided many helpful suggestions for our activities. Those who brought dogs said that their rooms were better than they find in most hotels. We have already made our booking for next year.

"Expensive against what you get."

2
04/05/2016

The hotel is in a good location in the Cotswolds, but it is far from its best and requires a full upgrade. The room was sufficient apart from the horrible armchair (see photograph) and only one power outlet worked out of the three in the room. The room and the hotel are very dated and given some upgrade could easily become a 5 star hotel as the gardens are very nice indeed. Wi-fi was intermittent. The Reception person who dealt with me on arrival was a pleasant chap, after that the receptionist was, and I can only say, was a surly female and gave the impression she did not want to deal with anyone.

"Good food, nice location"

5
01/05/2016

This hotel is local to me, but I've not eaten before as it looks like it would suit older clientele. However that is not the case. The food was good and the atmosphere was great. All well cooked and nice variety. Will go again

"Nice dog friendly hotel"

5
27/04/2016

From the moment we arrived, we found the staff polite and helpful. Our terrier dog was welcomed too. The room was lovely though the armchairs needed renewing. The restaurant food was excellent. We were allowed to take our terrier to breakfast in the 'Snug'......a beautiful area where we were well looked after and enjoyed superb cooked breakfasts! Good location for Wiltsire and Gloucestershire sightseeing.

"Tired but respectable old lady!"

27/04/2016

We took this as part of a Red Letter Day package, and probably wouldn't have chosen it otherwise. Environment is pleasant, and our room overlooked a nice garden. Our room was clean and the bed comfortable, but the general decor is tired, and the bathroom was like something out of the 1980s complete with trickly electric shower. If you're looking for a hotel with a modern level of decor, this one is not for you! We had a meal in the restaurant and the service was attentive. The menu featured fresh, local ingredients, which we appreciated, but the actual meal was a little unadventurous in taste. In general, we felt this hotel perhaps catered more for the grey pound than younger people used to more modern decor and catering.

"Long Weekend"

4
19/04/2016

We had an enjoyable stay at Mayfield House. One bedside table had been badly damaged by water at some time in the past but otherwise the room was in good order and the bed was comfortable. I thought the room rate was expensive but they upgraded us so that was OK. The WiFi didn't work in the bedroom but was excellent in the hotel lounge. I had seen other peoples' negative comments about the evening meals in the restaurant being expensive and small portions - from my experience those comments are unfair. The food was good quality, portions were sufficient and, for the quality of the food, the price was OK. If you don't want to spend that much there are at least two pubs within easy walking distance that looked OK from the outside (didn't go in either). You might find the hotel restaurant menu limited if you ate there often but we stayed there in order to visit the local area so we ate whilst out and only dinned in the hotel restaurant twice. When we came to pay the bill there was one small item that we shouldn't have been charged fore. when this was pointed out they didn't make a fuss they just took it off the bill. I would stay there again.

"Mayfield blooming great"

13/04/2016

My wife and I stayed at this hotel because of another excellent Travelzoo deal. In a small but spread out village between Malmesbury and Cirencester it's in a perfect location for visiting or just walking and enjoying part of Cotswold Country. Bus services are few and far between so you might wish to take the car to the towns, although a taxi from Cirencester to the Mayfield wasn't bad at £20. We arrived and the owner was on Reception. Very friendly and welcoming and carried our suitcase up to our room with us. What a great start. And it got better. EVERY member of staff we encountered was warm friendly and had that personal touch. One was on the same bus as us going to Cirencester and we were chatting almost like friends. The food is very well prepared and reasonably priced for a hotel. Breakfast was fine and the (younger) staff again friendly and efficient. This is a dog-friendly hotel so be prepared to see a lot of them. (There were even two in the Bar dining area). Don't be put off by this, unless you have an allergy etc. I'm only mentioning it becasue of that. Although initially a little off-putting it's no different to the Continent. We are definitely going back. The hotel does some really good deals of its own and we'd advise anyone to check these out. It's just 20 minutes or less from the M4 but a gateway to a wondefuil break, as we had. We wouldn't just recommend it, we'd go farther and say you'd be missing out if you didn't try it.

"Perfect short break base"

4
12/04/2016

We were looking for a short break and came across a very good deal for this hotel. Sometimes such deals are necessary because the hotel is flawed in some way but not here! The hotel is set in a pleasant village close to Malmesbury and Cirencester and is surrounded by interesting and beautiful places to explore. We came here with an elderly parent and the hotel were great in ensuring the right rooms were available. The staff were friendly and helpful, the rooms spacious and comfortable. Decor a little dated in places but not enough to detract from the overall experience. Breakfast was great and plentiful and the evening meals also very good (a good selection of pubs around if you want to eat elsewhere). We came away regretting we had only booked for 2 nights and would be happy to return particularly if we need a great holiday base.

"Very enjoyable stay"

5
11/04/2016

We have just stayed here on a Travelzoo offer. We found all the staff very friendly and professional. Our room was clean and comfortable - plenty of hot water. We had one meal in the dining room and one in the bar and enjoyed both of these. It's an old building so floors are rather creaky but we were not troubled by noise from other guests. We would certainly stay here again if in the area.

"Friendly hotel"

5
10/04/2016

We enjoyed a two night break booked through Travel Zoo. Our room was clean and spacious with modern furniture. The hotel itself is very old with original beams and wonky floors. Breakfast was excellent as was the bar meal I had on the first night. All the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful and were knowledgeable about the local attractions and surrounding area.

"Great Stay"

5
05/04/2016

Have just spent two night at the Hotel traveling with 2 large dogs . Was made to feel so welcome and every member of staff we met was so friendly and helpful .. Will defiantly be returning .. Thank you ..

"Excellent hotel with good location and facilities, however overpriced food."

3
05/04/2016

We stayed in 3 rooms at the hotel overnight. The room was good sized, and clean. The staff was very helpful - were attentive of small requests that we made. Food was tasty. GOod parking facilities Negatives 1. The food was way overpriced and portions small. 2. As it is a converted hotel, access to rooms is through small stair ways. We had 3 really small kids, and it is a bit dangerous 3. Our three rooms were in three different corners of the hotel - one in a different building.

"A very pleasant hotel"

5
28/03/2016

This traditional hotel set in Crudwell, just outside Malmesbury on the fringes of the Cotswolds is obviously much favoured by more mature guests who enjoy exploring the delights of the neighbouring towns and villages or those who enjoy country walks in beautiful surroundings. My bedroom was in one of the annex buildings and was large and very well appointed. The hotel has an excellent restaurant. You would need a car if you wished to get around and about. I enjoyed my stay very much.

"Friendly Helpful Staff Enhance Birthday Celebration"

4
25/03/2016

Took advantage of a DBB offer to celebrate a 70th Birthday and this hotel turned out to be an excellent choice. From booking to checking out the overall impression of friendly staff with the right approach and sense of humor was paramount. Dinner was excellently cooked, presented and good value. This was enhanced by the excellent service and good humour of the waitress I believe known as Cilla. This attention to customer service was again apparent to the staff at breakfast who served freshly cooked breakfasts promptly, and responded to requests with a smile. Buffet pass for fruit, cereals and juices Only stayed 1 night not enough time to fully review the amenities hence the very good and not an excellent. Room was comfortable and clean but tea tray required more milk so not having to order more from reception and shower pressure needs improving. Overall my impression was of a good value hotel with excellent staff

"Another Excellent Visit"

5
17/03/2016

This was our second visit to this hotel by way of a 'mini-break', and we have to say that we and our four legged friends were made to feel most welcome. The rooms are warm and comfortable with king-size + beds and crisp linen, and the bathrooms are immaculate. The restaurant serves a small but excellent a la carte menu and the food is delicious and beautifully presented. My souffle and guinea fowl were so good I ordered the same on the second night! The location in the Cotswolds is ideal as there is plenty to see and do in the vicinity, and the staff were able to give us plenty of suggestions even on a very wet day. Many Thanks for a most enjoyable stay.

"This hotel punches above its weight"

4
14/03/2016

We had a very enjoyable three night stay here. The location is terrific, with many interesting places to visit in the area (Malmsbury is charming). Staff at the hotel are universally friendly, pleasant and obliging, and both dinner and breakfast were very enjoyable. We had paid for an upgraded room which had plenty of room, a very comfortable bed and a garden view. Bathrobes were provided.

"What a find!"

5
10/03/2016

This hotel is excellent, from the warm welcome, to the efficient staff and the quiet rooms. The dinner menu is rather limited, but the quality is excellent. We will definitely be returning. The breakfast really sets you up for the day.

"Highly Recommended"

5
07/03/2016

We stayed for 3 nights in the Cottage rooms . The room was very good with the biggest comfortable bed I've slept in. Staff very friendly and efficient. The full English breakfast is excellent, using local produce that set you up for the day. Ideally situated for day trips in The Cotswolds. Thank you Mayfield House.

"Red letter day"

4
06/03/2016

We were given a red letter day voucher and chose this hotel out a wide choice. I have to say the staff where fantastic. John helped sort out a few niggles with red letter days prior to our stay. Thank you John. Frank was exceptionally friendly as was the lady who's name we didn't get who greeted us when we arrived. We had a lovely meal which we couldn't fault - very tasty and of a high standard. The only negative which didn't affect our stay was the decor of the hotel including the bedroom was very tired and dated and could do with a spruce up. That said the room was clean and warm. I would most definitely recommend this hotel.

"short break"

4
05/03/2016

Very good hotel with excellent dog friendly facilities they provided breakfast in the bar area to allow the dog to eat with us.. Bar food was good value. Staff were very helpful. good location for exploring the cotswolds

"Very enjoyable short midweek break"

5
04/03/2016

A friendly, comfortable hotel. Our room was warm and cosy with all the little extras that made for a very pleasant stay. Good location for visiting many places of interest though we didn't find any local amenities. Breakfast was tasty, gorgeous porridge! Evening meals delicious. All the staff we encountered were most friendly and courteous. Would certainly like to return one day!

"Great base for visiting The Cotswolds"

5
29/02/2016

Just returned from The Mayfield House. Great friendly service and attention to detail. We had a Garden view room, plenty of coat hangers, tea/coffee, bottled water & robes. Breakfast cooked to order, not hot plates, and personalised to individual requirements and served on warm plates. The food, (bar or restaurant) well cooked and tasty. The ham egg & chips definately worth a try. This is a good base for visiting The Cotswolds. Boulton on the Water, Burford, Bibury,Stow, Moreton, The Slaughters all in easy reach. The staff were all friendly, informative and helpful. Toiletries available if you've forgotten anything. Well worth a visit.

"Overall review"

3
26/02/2016

Pleasant country hotel. I do feel strongly that when a guest asks for Coca Cola that that is what should be produced. I was given this substitute TWICE - a syrup plus spritzer which had NO bubbles - It was FLAT. May I also add that the Restaurant Menu is limited - especially if one is staying for more than one night.

"Excellent value 5 night stay"

5
25/02/2016

Booked at a special winter rate, this was excellent value. Five nights in a comfortable and clean room, dinners delicious with extra touches of home baked breads and friendly service at all times. Great centre for visiting Cotswolds countryside, towns and villages. Owner very welcoming and atmosphere relaxing and warm. Would definitely come again.

"Wonderful hotel exceptional customer service"

5
21/02/2016

We chose this hotel through a weekend break deal website. Hotel was as we expected. Clean large room. Shower room well stocked with towels soap etc. Tea and coffee facilitates excellent. I have an allergy and was a little concerned as it is life threatening and I didn't know what I could eat off the menu. The staff were outstanding. When we booked our table a note was made of my allergy and passed to the restaurant. When we went to the restaurant they cooked exactly what I had ordered and didn't make me feel a freak. Breakfast was the same. They couldn't do enough to ensure I was able to act like any other diner. I can't thank them enough and I know that everyone will have the same level of service.

"Hotel with excellent service and very dog friendly"

5
21/02/2016

We had a great two night stay. Staff very helpful and food excellent. We were very pleased that they are so dog friendly as we like to take our dog with us when we travel. The most dod friendlt Best Western we have stayed in.

"Good Short Break"

4
18/02/2016

Booked this along with another couple through a Travelzoo offer for a two night break and we were very happy with the deal. The hotel would benefit from some redecoration and refurbishment but is however very clean and provides all that we required. The room was a reasonable size with a small but very nice bathroom with shower . All the staff from reception onwards were both friendly an efficient. The food served in the restaurant was very good and there is a comfortable bar which serves bar meals. I would be very happy to stay at this hotel again in the future.

"Overnight Stay"

17/02/2016

Our second visit to this hotel,we were given an upgrade and we did have a nice room, spacious, good size bathroom with linoleum flooring, very clean. We had 2 easy chairs with table, very comfortable bed and pillows, side tables, TV and writing desk. Think it had recently been painted, windows dressed with lovely curtains. We booked dinner for 8pm, we were meeting friends, and we all enjoyed our meals along with the service from the waiting staff. There were 2/3 vegetarian options, one of which was chosen a Mushroom Strogonoff, one Salmon fillet, one one Guinea Fowl and one Pork Belly with excellent crackling. Breakfast was also very good, 2 had perfectly cooked Poached Eggs, one Full English, one Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon. Plenty of toast , coffee and Tea. This is an older style hotel, which we believe is gradually being tidied up, so some areas are yet to be improved. However, the staff are very accommodating

"A disappointment"

2
11/02/2016

We booked this hotel as it said it was 'dog-friendly' and we take our little staffie everywhere with us. We received a warm welcome but we hadn't been told when booking by telephone that the dog friendly rooms were totally separate from the hotel itself and as it rained all weeked this wasn't very pleasant. The room was akin to a £30 a night B&B with scruffy chipped furniture, damp and it wasn't overly clean - not at all like the website pictures. My husband's first task was to replenish the empty toilet roll holder and then de-cobweb as i'm arachnophobic. Meanwhile I attempted to adjust the shower height and it came away in my hand. My husband borrowed a screwdriver from reception and did a very temporary repair as the screw itself was too short. We paid £2.95 each for a cup of coffee which left everything to be desired. Our table for dinner was booked 'in the snug' for 6.15pm. We were prompt but to our dismay there was a TV showing the rugby match on in there. My husband asked for the table to be moved elsewhere so we could enjoy our meal in peace and was told that the television would be turned off at 6.45pm. The food was good but I was disappointed that there wasn't much of a vegetarian option on the a la carte menu which we had already paid for when booking even though we were told there would be at least four things to choose from - there were two. I opted fro a ploughmans from the bar menu which was tasty although I would have liked something more. My husband's meal was very small considering the cost of it. We returned again to the snug in the morning for breakfast . I was happy to see breakfast muffins on the menu but sadly they weren't available. There was no vegetarian breakfast option so I settle for toast, a badly poached egg and some cold beans whilst my husband had a child's size 'full english.' The website misleads you into thinking you will be staying in luxurious surroundings and that your dog will be made very welcome for the £10 supplement you are charged. However this simply isn't the case. I would say the hotel isn't so much dog-friendly as dog tolerant. We had a £146 stay which felt more like £66

"Another fabulous break at this very friendly hotel"

5
10/02/2016

Just back from another fabulous relaxing break at the Mayfield... As always the staff made us feel more than welcome, and they are tireless in their efforts to make your stay the best they can.. Our meals were delicious as usual, using mainly local produce which we love. Thank you to you all and look forward to our next trip, which we know won't be too long..

Great hotel. Good base for visiting the area. Exceptional service from the kind and friendly but non intrusive team. Real ale at the bar very moreish. Rooms clean. Restaurant is excellent with a varied menu cooked to perfection. Feels like the hotels of my childhood....this is a good thing! Good selction of board games at the bar. Recommended.

"A pleasant New Year's Eve"

My wife and I stayed for one night, to enjoy the NYE dinner and dancing. The hotel is very easy to find, bang on an A-road. Genial proprieter Frank is a happy presence who energises his staff. Very friendly and prompt table and reception service! We much enjoyed the beef main course. Could have done with some more recent dance tunes, though the clientele was mainly sixtysomethings so Stones and Motown tracks were the order of service. No bad thing! Our bedroom was pleasant with a lovely big bathroom.

Stayed here one night for business and very welcoming, great staff and decent room. Would certainly stay here again. Really decent food pub just down the road, too. Parking l was a challenge when we got there but the owner came out to point us in the right direction.

Very good overall experience, excellent food, very friendly and helpful staff. Hotel bedrooms would benefit from upgrade as a little dated to my tastes, but for anyone who appreciates character style building would probably be fantastic Generous car parking facility with secure off road parking.

"Friendly hotel in a good location"

Stayed for a night and we were pleasantly surprised by the size of the room and as we had a large shower rather than a bath. Staff were friendly and helpful and service at dinner the same. Evening meal very enjoyable, leaning towards the more traditional style. Decor tired in places and our shower proved to be a sad disappointment of poor water flow and erratic temperature. Great breakfast and a good location for visiting a range of places. Great value overall and would be happy to return.

4 of us visited for 1st time today for lunch. Great venue (although quiet) - excellent food/menu - brilliant service. Appreciated management coming to spend time with us during meal. Certainly visit again and already looking forward to it.

Nice, friendly staff, very helpful and welcoming. Gorgeous building, downstairs restaurant and bar quaint and cosy. Bed has seen better days and the shower was diabolical. But it was warm, clean, great service and conveniently located for exploring Cotswolds.

Nice quite hotel with excellent food. A nice beer on the bar and helpful friendly staff. Clean and well kept room but the internet was a bit hit and miss during the early evening. Overall a pleasant stay

"Great For Short Breaks"

04/12/2015

Have just returned from a 3 night break here which we very much enjoyed. Our room, a superior double, was quite spacious and with a large bathroom. There was a good selection of teas, coffee, and a hot chocolate, along with a couple of small packs of biscuits, and a little jar of sweets on a tray. Also two bottles of mineral water every day. The whole place was very warm, comfortable and clean. Drinks in the bar were quite expensive, but that's hotel prices, so to be expected really. The menu in the restaurant was quite varied, however, I feel that a couple of more simple dishes may appeal to some. The desserts are to die for though! The staff are very welcoming, friendly and professional, which made our stay extremely enjoyable, and we hope to return soon. Definitely would recommend to anyone wanting a short break in The Cotswolds area.

"What is there not to like"

I hope I am not being unfair if I say that SOME parts of this hotel are probably nearer to their next refurbishment date that their last one, but it is a very clean, smart and pleasant place, and frankly I would rather stay at a real hotel run by real people that a chrome and glass palace run by robots. Room was spacious and comfortable with lots of little touches like a jar of sweets, bottled water etc. that gave the message of people caring. I ate on the pre-paid offer and it was a decent quality meal at a very reasonable price - the menu was a little limited, but there was enough choice and it was well prepared. Staff here are really friendly but not unprofessional - I took a 30 mile detour to stay here because they had a good offer on - it was worth the drive - great hotel.

"Friday lunch"

28/11/2015

We booked lunch at this hotel, parked our car in the ample car park and completed a 20 mile cycle ride before returning to the hotel to meet the rest of our group of 4. The welcome and service from the member of staff was very off putting, cold, no eye contact we felt as though we were an inconvenience. Having completed the cycle ride the first thing on our mind was a drink. However the lady asked several times for us to hurry up deciding what we wanted to eat. I wanted to sit, relax, have a drink then look at the menue but no we had to decide. If they did not want to serve lunch they should not have taken the booking. I said to my wife if she asks once more for us to hurry up I am going I was so annoyed. However we made our selection and gave it to the very impatient member of staff. We were the only customers in the hotel, no one else was in the bar or Resteraunt it was Friday 1.30pm. The bar is nice, a cosy place. Our food was served by another member of staff who was significantly better and had a personality. The food was excellent no problems here. Summary cosy place, not busy hence lacks atmosphere great good, however a significant amount of hospitality training is required for dome staff

"A Cotswold Gem"

This friendly family run hotel is a real gem in the area. For me it is a go to hotel whenever I am in the area. The food is excellent and the rooms are all individual. Very well appointed. Easy parking, plenty of 'air space' to relax in. Well stocked bar, with friendly bar staff. The menu changes by the season and features local produce.

"Best Western, Crudwell"

Not the greatest Best Western I have stayed at. Restaurant food is a little off the wall with limited choice. Room walls are thin and poorly insulated. Bathroom smells of drains. The staff were attentive and provided good.service.

Had a wonderful couple of days staying at this hotel. All staff and Management very polite. We stayed in room 11 which was on the top floor, it was very large and spotlessly clean. We had a meal in the restaurant on our first evening. the service and menu was excellent. I had the pidgeon for first course and would recommend it. Breakfast was very good.

Husband, 7-year-old and I stayed three nights in October half-term. The room was spacious and pleasant, with two windows, blackout curtains, plenty of warmth and ventilation if required. Had no bath but a spacious shower, and the en-suite had a window which is always good. Dinner was excellent - we were sorry only to dine once, as we visited relatives the other evenings; breakfast excellent too. Staff all friendly, professional, and accommodating. A well-placed hotel which we hope to visit again.

Excellent base from which to visit villages in Gloucestshire and importantly for me the racing festival in March. Very welcoming, attentive, great food and atmosphere. Booked already for next March. Clean rooms, very professional staff. All pluses.

A great hotel in a great location. We have been three times now and each time we have been given a lovely room on the back overlooking the gardens. the rooms are very spacious with a good seating area and the bed very comfortable indeed. We have slept very well each time we've stayed.

Everything was found to be clean, our bed was huge and comfortable. A comfortable, well stocked bar that kept an excellent local cask ale and a really nice restaurant with a superb range of meals on offer. An award winning breakfast. The staff were found to be friendly and efficient. Ample car parking and an ancient building with plenty of character made this the perfect choice. Excellent value for money.

The hotel staff were excellent as was the evening meal and breakfast. The bar had a local cask ale on which was a nice touch. My room was in an annex away from the main building and although clean, was a little tired.

"welcoming"

19/10/2015

This welcoming hotel provided an idea place to stay just outside Cirencester. Our room on the first floor overlooked the garden. Some unexplained creaking occurred in the ceiling as we were preparing to get up, however this did not affect our sleep. We enjoyed our dinner and breakfast and the service was good. The bar served a real ale straight from the barrel which was an added bonus. Would return if in the area.

"The BEST Best Western"

Old Cotswold meets modern hotels. A superb stay with friendly helpful staff. The rooms were large, modern, individual, fully appointed in a traditional comfortable homely environment. The restaurant and wines were excellent and good value. Large car park and very convenient for touring the area. Highly recommended and I shall definitely stay there again.

"Hotel with a good "feel" about it."

16/10/2015

We stayed for 2 nights in a superior room which was very comfortable. The hotel had a relaxed atmosphere and very helpful staff. The food was very good and well presented, especially dinner. The hotel is located a few miles from Malmsbury and well situated to visit Westonbirt Arboretum, which was the purpose of our visit.

"A warm welcome"

14/10/2015

We stayed for 3 nights in a superior room on a half board basis. We considered it good value for money. All members of staff we met were friendly and helpful and the hotel has a warm and friendly atmosphere. The breakfast cold buffet was limited but the hot food was freshly cooked and of a good quality. Service at dinner was efficient and the food was well presented and plentiful. Our room was comfortable although a little dated but there seems to be a programme of ongoing improvements taking place and some new furniture for the lounge arrived during our stay. The car park is large and the hotel is in an excellent loctaion.

We stayed here for 1 night on our way to the End of the Road Music Festival. We did book the room on a special deal so was fantastic value for money. The hotel is located in a lovely village. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant in the evening, the food was absolutely fantastic and would go back just to eat in the restaurant. The room was spotless and modern, though the bathrooms are a little dated and could do with being modernised but again they were spotless. This also applies to the toilets in the public area, these could do with being modernised. The bed was very comfortable and we had a great nights sleep. We did not stay for breakfast so cannot comment on this but if it was as good as the evening meal there would be no complaints. We would definitely stay here again. Thank you.

We stayed overnight to visit nearby Lacock Village and Abbey. The hotel was clean and rooms were attractive and well equipped with blankets, fans, heaters, bathroom robes, hairdryers and coffee making equipment. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food for breakfast and dinner was well prepared, well cooked and a good range to choose from. Car parking was plentiful - important to us with classic cars. Would definitely stay again. No lift available but we were offered help with the case.

"Not the best Western"

01/10/2015

Appearances on line did not meet reality. The same group have far better value at similar pricing at other member hotels. Room was tight in a pokey annex next to external washing up facility with related clanking plates late at night along with fronting on to a busy country road. Grubby carpets and soft furnishings throughout as well as outdated bathroom facilities in the room. The feel was disappointing resulting in a desire to remain outside of the property altogether including going elsewhere in the village for a meal in better surroundings

We stayed for one night on the way to Devon, at this smartly presented hotel in the southern Cotswolds. Efficient and friendly staff on reception, offered to carry our bags and showed us to our room. The room itself was large, clean and simply decorated. Good breakfast cooked to order using quality ingredients. Large car park.

Lovely staff and owners. Good breakfast, warm atmosphere. In top floor room and possibly worst shower ever. It would not however put me off returning for a short break. Was not particularly cheap, however visit was at premium time. WiFi was not brilliant!
