Description

The family run hotel is just a short walk through the park. The Goethestraße with its old trees and flowers, together with its impressive art nouveau and Wilhelminian style villas is an oasis of peace in the middle of this lively capital city. Just by entering the hotel you will be thrilled by the lobby and public areas, its individual charm and collection of antiques paying homage to Johann Wolfgang von Goethe where the hotel gets its name from. The owner family has tastefully decorated all rooms with loving care and attention to detail. You can expect a friendly atmosphere and 65 comfortable rooms with bath/WC, color TV, telephone and a fax connection. "La Cocagna" restaurant with its Mediterranean flair services a selection of regional and Mediterranean bistro dishes, with select wines by the bottle or glass if you wish. The "Weimar" meeting room is available for your meetings and events. For smaller events the Library is available, where you can pick up a good book...Goethe for example? Magdeburg, with its 1200 years history, an abundance of art, buildings (such as the Gothic Cathedral) and parks is well worth a visit and stay at the Best Western Hotel Geheimer Rat. Enjoy your stay.

"Magdeburg's BW"
Artur S, 21 Octobre 2021

Great location, specious room, tasty breakfast, friendly staff. There is some issue to find the parking place for bigger van but personal car can be parked on the hotel's parking. Hotel is located in nice old house.

"What a Great Place"
Jen B, 03 Décembre 2019

Lovely quiet, tree lined street with a small stream flowing down the middle. Parking round the back, a great breakfast with lots of choice, tea and coffee facilities in the room and an easy walk into town. Staff were friendly and helpful. Will definately go back and/or recommend to others.

"Terrible service and breakfast"
Sherpa21050365277, 06 Juillet 2019

Employees were NOT happy, very bad service. No service at all...... Lot of noice from the street. Terrible breakfast. NOT enough food and bad coffee. The beds were ok and the rooms were clean. Dont go there.

"Hotel situated in a lovely part of Magdeburg"
kmr100, 30 Avril 2019

We stayed here just for one night. It is a shame we got delayed as the area was worth exploring in daylight. Hotel is in a quiet street. Parking is ok on the road though hotel has an outside small car park and you can also pay to use their garage for secure parking. Room was nice. Bed was very comfortable. Very tasty breakfast and lots of choice. Ideal for a stop over but also worth staying more than night to explore the area and the city.

"Nice hotel in good location with friendly staff and good breakfast"
natascha h, 07 Janvier 2019

Nice looking hotel in a quiet area. Not trendy but just nice and clean. Soft yellow colours in the rooms and everything is there. Parking at the backside. Staff is really helpfull and friendly. Breakfast buffet is extensive and good!

"Great stay "
winniek888, 25 Décembre 2018

This hotel is perfect for a no fuss quick stay. Location was ideal as we were there for a swim meet. Very clean, staff were very friendly, our stay included an excellent breakfast. I would have given it full marks except there was no parking! The hotel does have its own parking but it was full and street parking is hell, especially when you arrive in the evening! But otherwise it was great!

"For a short visit"
nikoin79, 13 Février 2018

If in town only for day or max two, then I'd say that good choice. Small and bit old, but rooms are big. Noise from street comes in like there is no windows, but luckily the streets around are not heavily crowded. Room, besides that it was big, was clean and cozy.

"Brilliant hotel"
DobertRowneyJr, 19 Octobre 2017

This is a great hotel, check in was incredibly quick with no fussing about, the gentleman at the reception was brilliant even late at 10pm, rooms were very cosy, clean and beds were comfortable. There was no noise at night as the hotel is in a quiet location in the city centre. The only potential improvement would perhaps be to mention that the 'hotel parking' is tiny and not worth trying late at night. However, within 5 minutes we found a parking spot 2 mins walk away on the street that was free so there was no issue. Breakfast was excellent, lots of tasty food to choose from. Overall I would definitely recommend staying here.

"Nicely situated for the town"
uktravellerHampshire, 01 Octobre 2017

This is supposed to be a four star hotel but falls far short to the others we stayed in during our trip round Germany. On arrival the guy on reception was not too interested in the guests, no forthcoming help on how to find town, transport etc. He send to spend most of his time outside smoking. The setup of the hotel is quite old fashioned but it has a lift which is essential. The room and bathroom were of a reasonable size but tired, the curtains in the bathroom were ripped and the net curtain in the bedroom was hanging off the rail. Bit more thought needs to be put into the bathroom and blinds would be better rather than net curtains and ordinary ones. We thought we had booked our car into the garage but were informed we hadn't but there is also an area at back of hotel where you can park If lucky as it is very limited. Breakfasts were nice with good choice and we did decide to eat in one night, menu was limited but food was very nice. Bit more effort needs to be put in to warrant being a four star hotel.

"LOVELY HOTEL"
LADAVIES_13, 08 Mai 2017

This is a really great hotel, situated in a quiet residential street of quality houses and apartments, within walking distance of the city centre. It is well appointed, lovely rooms and polite and helpful staff. We found that for the quality it is very reasonably priced.

"Goethe would have approved !"
124pilot, 20 Avril 2017

German literary heavyweight Wolfgang v. Goethe, who counted the title of "Geheimer Rat" (roughly: Privy Councilor) amongst his many honors, would have surely approved of this hotel, the name and interior of which makes reference to Goethe but stops short of actually calling out his name. Located in the leafy neighborhood of Magdeburg-Stadtfeld this historic building has nice, tastefully appointed yet functional rooms with good beds and enough natural daylight. The breakfast buffet is plentiful and the staff is friendly. Recommended !

"Great Stay"
Rick B, 17 Avril 2017

We were visiting my wifes sister who lives about 20 miles from this hotel. I must say we are very pleased with the room, staff and the hospitality they showed us. The room was excellent, food was very good. Safe and secure hotel We will be back next year.

"PLEASANT SDURROUNDINGS"
BrianfromKingsbury, 29 Septembre 2016

A taxi from the main railway station to the hotel cost me 10 euros but I later found that I could walk the distance in about 25 minutes. I was impressed with the hotel and its tree lined surroundings. My room was on the very top floor and was well finished. I could get CNN English language broadcasts on the television which was useful as I do not speak German. The breakfast was good with buffet service. The staff spoke good English and were helpful with guidance to places of interest.

"Pleasant return visit"
Helle F, 28 Juillet 2016

Last year we picked Magdeburg and this hotel, primarily because it was more or less half way on the route from Denmark to Austria. We really enjoyed our one night stay back then and decided to take the chance to stay here once again travelling back from Austria. In contrast to last year there were no family rooms available (these are really wonderful), so we had to split up the family in two parts in two double rooms. We new that when we booked, so this was an informed choice. The hotel had been thoughtful enough to put us in two neigbouring rooms. The rooms were not totally identical - one had balcony, but only shower - the other had no balcony, but shower. For the parents it didn't matter for a one night stay - for the kids it was a big matter :) Both rooms weren't brand newly renovated, but fairly spacious and clean. One of the rooms smelled a tiny bit of "old stuff" - maybe it had once been a smoker's room. We visited the hotel on a very hot day, and we could have used some air conditioning, but it was nice to be able to open the door out to the balcony. Last year we had a wonderful dinner in the restaurant of the hotel, but unfortunately the restaurant was closed the day we visited the hotel this yeas, which was a bit disappointing, because we had been looking forwards to eat in the restaurant this year also. The friendly and service minded staff pointed us to a nearby Italian and French restaurant which we will make another review of (not totally positive). As last year we had a great breakfast in the restaurant with many choices of bread, cold cuts, cereal, yogurts, eggs, sausages, bacon, fruit etc. Our children enjoyed once again the option of having hot chocolate served in their own small pots.

"Tree Lined Street"
Karen W, 05 Juin 2016

Please with the location on this tree lined street with a park just out, as our family lives on the same street. The room was nice, clean and quiet with a nice view of the area around us. About a 15 minute walk from the main train station and an easy walk to the tram line. Great breakfast.

"Pleasant surprise"
Soeren N, 28 Mai 2016

Excellent location of the hotel. Quiet area. Very good restaurant with excellent food. Good service. In case of very hot days the lack of air conditioning might have been a problem - but this is the only minus to find.

"Don't bring your car."
Mati K, 23 Avril 2016

Free parking is advertised for the hotel. In reality it is a small 6 or 7 car parking lot. If you don't get there early enough reception directs you to find more "free parking" on the street. Good luck finding a spot. The old East Germany may have had lots of parking available due to lack of cars but that is not true any more. Hotel should be honest about the situation and state "very limited free parking available". In room internet connection was poor and we could not use our internet based telephone. Room was clean and comfortable, as was the rest of the hotel. Breakfast, as in other German Best Western hotels we have stayed at was magnificent. Small hiccup at check out as the receptionist did not know how to print out the receipt. Hotel really needs to get the parking situation sorted out. If it does it would get an excellent rating.

"Lovely Hotel - Would Return"
Rhian L, 12 Mars 2016

We were staying in the hotel while visiting friends who lived a few streets away. It was ideally located for walking to their house and included breakfast in the price, which is why we chose it over another hotel round the corner which was actually opposite our friends' apartment. We were given what must be one of the best rooms in the hotel, which had its own balcony (the only one in the hotel from the front it seems) with a pleasant view over the little stream and park space on the main street. There were flower boxes around the balcony which at the time were lacking in flowers and instead had been filled with cigarette ends from previous guests. The room also had an additional table and two chairs for the balcony, but the March weather was a bit chilly for sitting outside and enjoying the view. It would be lovely for any summer visitors staying in the same room. Other features in the room included a huge bed, flat screen TV, desk and a coat hook - which I've never come across in a hotel before and I don't know why, and usually my coat ends up slung over a chair, so a coat hook was most appreciated. There were plenty of plugs for charging all our modern gadgets and free WiFi, which you can get a log in for at the reception desk which is then valid for 72 hours, so if you were staying longer you will need to get a second code. There aren't any tea/coffee making facilities in the room, but there is a coffee pot in reception. The room was very quiet and we didn't hear much noise from the street below or other residents. The bathroom was perfectly functional, nothing spectacular, however we did have a small flood on the first day as the shower curtain didn't pull all the way round and water runs down the wall on to the floor. Putting a towel in the corner solved the problem, but then we were short one towel. Breakfast was very nice. There was a selection of traditional German meats, breads and continental cheeses as well as a toaster, cereals, fruit salad and hot bacon, sausage and scrambled egg. There was also a selection of teas, including the only English Breakfast Tea we saw all week, fruit juice and coffee from the staff. The hotel is well situated for access in to the town centre via bus or tram, and as is also close enough to the motorways if you wanted to escape elsewhere. We took a day trip to the Harz mountains which was about an hour's drive, and Berlin is about the same distance in the opposite direction. There is a supermarket down the road, coffee shops, a bakery and some pubs nearby. Overall a very pleasant stay and we would stay here again if visiting our friends.

"Basic, but friendly"
T R, 29 Février 2016

This is where my wife and I usually stay when we visit my parents (who live nearby) and leave the kids with them. It's a basic - actually mid-range - hotel. As it is a combination of several early 20th century buildings, there are very different shapes and sizes of rooms. Furniture is always basic hotel stuff, so is the bathroom. It's generally very quiet there, which is nice. The quietest are the rooms towards back. Rooms facing Goethestrasse may have a bit of traffic, but it's slow and on a very smooth surface. Rooms facing Steinigstrasse may be a different story, as that's a cobblestone street. All staff - reception, restaurant crew, night guy - are always very friendly and accomodating - especially the ones who've been there for years and know us. We only ever have breakfast there, and it's a pretty decent buffet. It has everything you expect: scrambled eggs, cerials, a variety of breads and bread rolls, cheese and meat cold cuts, honey and jams, etc. There are several parking options. You can park on the street if you're lucky, which is free of course. There are a few parking spot in the courtyard. And there is an underground garage. But it's quite low and the ramp is steep an narrow. Nothing for you SUV drivers out there. ;-) In terms of location, this may not be the greatest place to be in Magdeburg, depending on what you're looking for. Again, we go there because my parents live nearby. Goethestrasse is quite quaint. It has a little creek in the middle, the "Schrote", which you can follow for a nice walk or jog. The city center is maybe 2km away, and the work they're currently doing on the railway bridges of the main station complicates things. If you want to have easy access to the city, you may want to stay elsewhere. But we like this place. It's good and easy-going.

"Fine hotel"
Jaci W, 15 Novembre 2015

We stayed here on a business trip. The room was comfortable. The breakfast was included and had a nice selection. The rooms were quiet. The only issue was trying to connect to another guests room and the front desk staff were not able to do this because they didn't speak English.

"Just Ok"
CTCouple310, 12 Novembre 2015

I recently stayed here while on a business trip and the company that I rep for booked the hotel.. It was just ok.. the rooms were clean and the front desk was very nice, but the rooms were not sound proof at all so if your neighbor has tv on it is very loud in your room… the shower has a cotton shower curtain in a tiny shower so the entire time you are trying to clean up without touching the gross curtain.. and the curtain was so ridiculous there was no way not to get water all over the floor which I slipped on several times… This is just ok.. but not many choices in this area.. the positive is that you do have a clean room and they do offer free buffet breakfast.. Im giving this hotel a 3 star for being clean as the bathroom really was not, but the room itself was fine..

"Good hotel"
Bertrand N, 20 Octobre 2015

Nice hotel in a quiet area of the city. Rooms are well equipped and clean. Bathroom is large without a separate shower. Service is friendly and quick. The restaurant serves Italian food, which is OK if you don't want to go for dinner outside the hotel. Breakfast is very good.

"Hotel Geheimer Rat"
williamlD3485HG, 10 Septembre 2015

Great hotel just a 20 minute walk from the Altstadt, or Streetcar stops are 5 minutes from the hotel. Easy parking in the hotel lot or in the basement garage. A fine Italian Restaurant in the hotel with great food and service, and for a change of pace an outstanding Balkan Restaurant (The Adria) is a 3 minute walk from the hotel. A very clean well staffed hotel provided all guests with great service. Highly recommended for young and old.

"Situated on a quiet residentail street with plenty of parking space"
Wim W, 12 Août 2015

The location was fine for a city which can be bleak at times. It is situated on a treelined street with plenty of parking space. The towncentre is about half an hour's walk away. Not too bad but there were massive reconstruction works on near the station which caused a bit of a detour qnd delay. The corner room was spacious and it was quite possible to sleep with the French doors open - there was hardly any street noise in the morning. The shower unit was a bit wobbly with hardly enough space to turn. And there were not really any complimentary shampoo or lotion. Breakfast was abundant and the staff were professionally friendly It is a good alternative to huge town centre hotels of the major chains

"Quaint, querky and clean hotel"
BEEGEE77, 12 Août 2015

Used this hotel as an overnight stop en-route to Poland etc. Unfortunately, the hotel doesn't have air conditioning anywhere making our stay almost unbearable with the high temperatures that Europe was incurring at the time. Otherwise, the place is rather charming and the staff were all very pleasant. Locally made chocolates were offered at reception to try out. They were delicious and boxes could be bought from reception as well as gift packs of locally made beer. The small dining room was very pleasant and offered a varied dinner menu. We had rabbit stew which was very tasty but not the best choice when the room was so hot even with the windows opened. The hotel is located in a relatively quiet leafy area. A ten minute walk took us to the centre of Magdeburg which was disappointing. Nothing of any historic interest and apart from a shopping centre which had a few cafes and restaurants belonging to a chain, there didn't appear to be any other restaurants. We parked our car on the street next to the hotel which was free and convenient for transferring luggage. Apart from the lack of air conditioning in the hotel, there is nothing that I could say negative about it.

"Great stop over!"
nurse46_11, 18 Juillet 2015

This hotel is great. We were on a motoe bike so were travelling light. The hotel has private pool parking and helpful staff. The rooms are clean and well equipped. The food in the restaurant was extremely good

"Very nice hotel"
Holidaydad55, 17 Mai 2015

As this hotel is in a residential area it is very quiet and peaceful. It is not far from either the main station or a tram stop. The rooms are a nice size and are clean and comfortable. The bathroom is a little cramped for space but is functional. The staff are friendly and helpful. Good free internet is provided in all rooms and a classic very good German hearty breakfast is included in the room price. Given it's location you may need to walk a little if you wish to go to a restaurant or bar but that the pleasure of visiting a new town.
