Nice place , not worth the money , rude staff , looked down on questioned if we stayed there . Otherwise ok , nothing spectacular , very snotty part of town couldn't wait to get out of here . Ruined my birthday present !

« When you go back... »

While living in Madison Wisconsin, home of the UW-Madison and the state's capital, I never needed to stay in a hotel, and even when I visited, friends generously urged me to crash at their place. So when I needed a place to stay recently for a Badger football game, I decided to stay on the Capital Square at the Best Western Premier Park Hotel, the Inn on the Park, back in the day. In addition to being a convenient location for State Street, both Lakes Mendota and Monona, Madison's bountiful bike paths, coffee bars galore, a variety of restaurants and vintage bars...the list could go on; and for my brief visit, it was perfect. I parked and walked everywhere, the hotel's attitude for service was quietly responsive without being overdone, the bed was comfy and didn't aggravate my bad back, and the State Capital was impressive, constantly staring at me just outside my balcony window. Since there's a better than good possibility I will be back more often now, it's good know about this property, should I ever need similar amenities.

« Amazing piece of history! »

The new renovation of this hotel is just lovely - it is in the heart of downtown and has been restored beautifully. Great lengths were taken to honor the history of the building and the reason we love Madison Beautifully done - Bravo!

« Not bad for a Best Western, but they just can't seem to get it all together »

Hotel was pretty nice, parking was convenient, although even though it was 10 feet to the car, I had to have the Valet pull it in/out. Our first room was OK, looked over a roof, the electrical had problems and they moved us to a suite. Which had a lovely view of the capital and was nice, but the window was broken, the towel rod was broken and our room was never cleaned. We asked the concierge a simple question about running paths (two blocks away), they knew nothing. They didn't know if the farmer's market was going on either. They seemed to know much less about anything than I did, but they were quite pleasant. For the record, it was a football weekend, and they really gouge you for it. All that being said, the hotel was quite nice, not 4*, plastic drinking cups, no real concierge ... But a nice stay on the square.

    « pleasant stay »

It was a great choice for a place to stay near the Capital for our annual conference. Clean, comfortable rooms with friendly staff. Wish we could have have a window facing the Capital but I understand every room can't face that way. LOL

« Reservation Error- Management Unsympathetic and Nonresponsive »

I called to see if rooms were available for a popular weekend. I stayed here before and had a good experience but do remember rude employees at check in. The were rate quoted me was a cheaper rate than another hotel, so I canceled my existing reservations and made new ones. The reservationist got the month wrong - so the hotel charged me for three rooms as a "no show". Upon my request, they did refund my money ("as a courtesy"!) but could only rebook me at a significantly higher price. I complained that this was unacceptable and was unhappy with their response. I asked to speak to the reservation manager - she did not call me back at first. After speaking to her, I asked to speak to the GM, who did not return my call at all. I called Best Western Corporate twice. They indicated that management was contacted and that GM should have responded. Poor service, poor response. Luckily I found other rooms. I would not recommend this hotel based on their response and the impolite representatives I did have the opportunity to talk to.

« Great location, friendly staff »

The room I shared with a fellow conference attendee was quite large and faced the Capital. I was NOT a fan of the half-sized pillows. While you get four, and can surely find one to your liking, I have no need for four pillows. One or two regular-sized would have been much preferred. And unfortunately, Friday night was Homecoming and the college kids were LOUD until around 1 am.

    « Visit from Nebraska »

Great hotel. Clean. Lounge served only a few drinks and their menu in their restaurant only a had a couple items. Ended up not eating their because their was no simple food choices. Very quiet. Never heard anyone walking around on our floor. Housekeeping was very quiet as well. Nice location right next to the capital. Woke up Saturday to a very large farmers market which was fun to go walk around. Close to state street with lots of shopping and restaurants and bars. Came to Madison for a football game. It was a couple mile walk to the college stadium but not bad. Would choose this hotel again if we ever come back for a football game.

    « Crabby Check-in Staff »

Other than the attitudinal young lady at check-in this was a good stay. The new remodel is beautiful. Staff- very stale and cold with the exception of the lounge staff. Always good to stay close to the conference I attended. We might come back next year, but the price hike to pay for the new remodel might deter us. It was a bit high priced.

« Great location. Great rooms. Great service. »

This hotel has it all - great location, great staff, clean rooms, on site parking, and an airport shuttle. I stayed here for a conference located just a couple blocks away and within easy walking distance. This hotel has been updated and the furnishings upgraded. Common areas and private rooms were immaculate. Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable of the area and businesses. Highly recommend.

« Best on the Square »

Lovely accommodations, helpful staff, clean, quiet rooms. Nice to have a restaurant and bar/lounge available on site. Breakfast always a plus, hot or cold. We came for the weekend and enjoyed the Farmer's Market - so wonderful with the fresh produce. In the evening we enjoyed dinner at the TIPSY COW. It was only a short walk from the hotel. A fall trip with great friends. We all enjoyed the good weather and great color.

« Pros and Cons to The Hotel »

We've stayed at several hotels in Madison over the years and wound up at this one when we needed a late booking for the Ohio State Game earlier this month. There are some pros and cons, which I will try too summarize: The Pros -- located right on the Capital Square. Farmers Market is literally right outside your door. Many good restaurants within easy walking distance and we even walked to Camp Randall and back for the game. Hotel seemed very clean, and had recently been renovated. Our kids shared a queen room with two beds that was fairly spacious with a nice large bathroom and new shower. Elevators were quick and we did not run into the problem we ran into many other places that the elevators were always so full you could not get on them! Nice (but pricey!!!) restaurant on the premises, which served good beer too and was not at all crowded. The Cons -- WiFI was horrible to the point of being unusable. It went off every couple of minutes for twice that time. This made all of us miserable! It's a small thing, Best Western, make it work right or it's a deal breaker! Also, room my husband I shared was tiny and dark with one very small window overlooking a roof surrounded on three sides by taller buildings. It was like being in a tiny cave. There was a small desk with a small chair but otherwise no place tonsitbother than the bed. Bathroom was petite, closet was tiny. Hated the room.mvalet parking was efficient but very expensive. Overall, if I were headed out here and needed a place to stay, I would try the Doubletree or the new Hampton Inn, but if both were booked I would come here. Location is more than half decent and at least some of the rooms are nice and spacious, but they would have to promise me the wifi has been upgraded first!

    « Capitol's Best »

If you want an excellent downtown Capitol experience you must stay at Best Western Premier Park Hotel, Madison. Request one of their rooms with view of the capitol. The view was breath taking and best way to start our 2 week tour of Wisconsin & Minnesota. This was the best view of all our BW trip stays!

« Recent stay at Madison Best Western »

Beautifully remodeled, right downtown with great staff, available reasonable parking. It will be better when full restaurant opens on the premises. In walking distance to many restaurants, theaters and the UW campus, as well as Lake Monona and Lake Mendota where there are biking trails.

    « Great service, location »

This hotel is in an excellent location - across the street from the state house, right by lots of restaurants, bars, Saturday morning farmers' market and about 1.5 miles from the university of Wisconsin stadium(a walkable distance past cool shops). The service in the restaurant/bar, front desk, and room (maids) was excellent! Our bed was so comfortable! I would definitely stay there again !

« A really nice hotel right on the government square. »

I look for cleanliness, friendliness, and convenience. The Park Hotel has it all. Step out the door and you are a 5 minute walk from a variety of restaurants and bars. And the capital square that it is located on hosts the largest farmers' market I have ever seen. Rooms are quite nice and the breakfast bar is far better than the standard make-your-own-waffle establishments. The only drawback is that it is easy to miss the valet parking as it is in the garage of the hotel. As you travel around the square, it is to the right of the main entrance. Miss it and you'll have to make the loop. Great hotel.

    « Very comfortable stay »

This hotel was very comfortable with excellent beds which always make a difference when traveling. The location was excellent as many restaurants and shops were within walking distance. If you stay here, walk the block and a half and try the hamburgers a Dlux - best burger I've ever had.

« Nice Place, Valet Parking Only »

Nice hotel within walking distance to the Capitol and many other attractions. Comfortable room with nice amenities. We stayed in a room with patio doors that opened to the indoor pool area and easy access to the fitness center. The restaurant was just in the process of opening so we were pleasantly surprised to be have a complimentary breakfast buffet. Valet parking only, which made it quite convenient and secure.

« Spacious, friendly, great location for Capitol »

Recently there on business. Clean, spacious rooms with lovely bathroom with a large walk-in shower. Complimentary hot buffet breakfast had goo variety and had options that were GF. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful. Bar staff pour a good gin martini. Airport shuttle service available too. Hassle free and comfortable hotel located with a magnificent view of the Capitol.

    « Wow, what a beautiful remodel »

I was anxious to check out the newly remodeled Best Western Inn On The Park Hotel, now called the Park Hotel. I was floored by the fantastic job they have done. The interior and exterior of the property is top notch. Rooms are tastefully decorated with warm cozy color schemes and beautiful bathrooms. Same for the common areas of the property. It's a nice blend of modern and classic. Too many hotels that undergo renovations all have the same ultra-modern sterile look. This place did it right. Warm and cozy and hip at the same time. The location is perfect for all that Madison has to offer. restaurants, music, the capital all at your finger tips. What a gem. I had the opportunity to meet the general manager and compliment him and the staff on a job well done. I highly recommend this hotel and be sure to stop in the longe and have a cocktail with the ever wonderful Heather. Madison at it's best awaits you.

« Remodelled and clean, best location, a bit cheaper than Madison Concourse »

Right on the Madison State House Park, better location, and cheaper than the Madison Concourse. Just remodeled, clean, efficient. If you're travelling to Epic, there's a free shuttle, which gets there in less than an hour, often less than 45 minutes in the morning.

« went for live performance »

location is great for getting around all the great points to see in Madison. By the capital. And half a block to State Street. The hotel has just been renovated. And they did a great job. Car valet is nice touch, when trying to park in downtown Madison.

« Very nice hotel with a great Capital view »

Everything in this hotel was great, from the valet, reception, room, bathroom. The only negative thing I have to say is the bed as just a bit too firm for my taste, and the pillows were horrible. They were small, square ones and very thin. The view from the window to the capital was great. And you are right downtown with all of the museums, bars, and restaurants. This was my first trip to Madison, and it has a very nice downtown area.

    « Beautiful Remodel »

The hotel did a great job on the remodel. All the rooms have been given a face lift as well as the lobby and restaurant. Looking forward to restaurant opening for dinner with a hiring of a renowned chef. Lovely location across the street from the Capitol. Top notch restaurants and bars all within walking distance. Close to the Orpheum and Performing Arts center as well.

    « Premier Hotel »

First it should be noted that the name has changed to Park Hotel. This is located directly across from the Capitol building & has valet parking. Very nice bar area, clean rooms with wifi, frig, safe, the usual amenitoes. Everything about this place says clean & neat. The complimentary breakfast was an awesome buffet style with lots of hot & cold choices. Location is so convenient to everything in Madison & since we were there for a wedding, we just parked the car Friday, walked the 8/10ths of a mile to the church & spent all our time in that Capitol area. Bonus-we were there for the Saturday Dane County Farmer's Market which goes all around the square & across the street in many spots. All Wisconsin crops, bakery goods, etc....excellent farmer's market!

    « delayed room cleanup »

Breakfast was virtually identical each morning, room cleanup was after 3PM each day. Courteous staff, clean & attractive public spaces. Garage staff was prompt & courteous, location good, price competitive

    « hotel in Madison »

This hotel was an excellent place to stay for conference. It is close to everything. All updated rooms with awesome beds. Staff ( most ) were really attentive. They provide a complimentary hot breakfast that was fresh and delicious, The valet and front desk staff very friendly and accomadating.

    « Perfect Location »

This was my second trip to Madison for work. Last year I stayed at The Edgewater (amazing place!) so I was little leery about a Best Western name for this hotel. When I arrived I definitely stood corrected! I was told the place had been remodeled; the entryway was beautiful, right down to the chandeliers, the rooms were very nice as well. Mine faced the Capitol building so it was quite a site each evening. The room was clean and spacious. There was an odd buzzing sound but I soon figured out it was the a/c. It wasn't too bad compared to other a/c units I've heard. The location of the hotel compared to stores, restaurants, etc. was great! We didn't mind the walk and it was about a half mile to State Street I believe. On Saturday there was a huge farmers' market right outside the hotel - truly amazing! Even though our partner company paid for our stay I would gladly stay here again using my own money. :)

« Great Value and Newly Remodeled »

I stayed here for a trade show but came in a couple days early with my wife to enjoy Madison. The location is excellent, across the street from the Capitol building (tour it, it's worth it) and walking distance to Collectivo, Starbucks and many local restaurants offering everything from burgers to sushi. If you're in town for a show at Monona Terrace, it's about a 3-4 block walk and well worth not having to find parking in the area.

    « Epic travelers beware! »

I stayed here to attend training at Epic because I liked the location on Capitol Square, and the hotel offered a shuttle to Epic's campus. I expected some cost associated with the shuttle, but I didn't expect a $50 per day charge. I could have requested an Uber to take me to Epic and back for cheaper, and I wouldn't have had to leave the hotel at 7:00 AM. Other hotels in the area that offer shuttles are the Concourse ($10 per day) and The Graduate (free). I was very disappointed with the exorbitant shuttle cost and would not return to this hotel as long as it remains that high. The rest of my experience was pleasant; they did a great job with the remodel.

« Perfect place to stay »

This was the perfect place to stay for a weekend getaway to Madison! Convenient location to do many things down town including farmers market and Taste of Madison on the Capitol Square. Hotel has undergone a gorgeous transformation as recently renovated. Very comfortable beds and great views of lakes and capital from rooms.

« Even Better Following Renovation »

I've been staying at the Inn on the Park wen in town for Ironman Wisconsin for almost a decade. The location, just off Capitol square, is great. Service has always been superb. My one complaint, that the rooms were getting a little threadbare, is no longer the case. With the renovation the accommodations now match the location and service. Highly recommended.

« Best place to stay while in Madison »

Just finished staying at the hotel over Labor Day weekend. We were on a 40 year anniversary bucket list tour. We have stayed many times before but not since the renovation of the rooms. WOW great style and accommodations change! We will definitely be back when restaurant is complete. Love the great location because we go up for the market(right outside front door)shopping, restaurants and things to do.

    « Watch on-line bookings »

I booked a reduced rate room on-line. Upon arrival, I was told the rate was not available. Make sure to get confirmation of your reduced rate if you book on-line. Otherwise, you may find yourself in my situation with no other options and needing to book and expensive rate upon arrival.

« Best Western Madison Downtown - a jewell in the rough »

The BW Inn on the Park has undergone and is undergoing a renovation and the rooms are fantastic. It is centrally located and the staff is excellent. Fitness room could use some free weights but aside from that, it's a great place to stay for biz or pleasure in Madison.

« Great staff, service and location. »

We were in town for and extended stay for our daughter's wedding. They were very easy to work with on the amount of rooms needed. Great views from all rooms. The farmer's market on the capitol square was a bonus on Saturday morning. Location, location, location, amazing.

    « Great Service »

Service is extremely friendly and helpful, very nice guest rooms and facilities, excellent location just across from the Capitol. Very convenient if you are running the Madison Mini Marathon. We really enjoyed our stay!

« Best Place in Madison »

Ditch the car and enjoy downtown Madison Wi. You are right on the square and a walk down the pedestrian mall of State Street to the UW campus.....Farmer's Market during the summer, free concerts on UW Union Terrace. Great bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. The only place to stay in Madison. Plus a nice indoor swimming pool and great view of the isthmus, both lakes or the Capitol square.

    « Attending Conference »

I like the location.. The conference is not too far to walk. It is a little more than a third of a mile. You can almost walk anywhere and you don't need the car. Many restaurants are nearby. The breakfast at the hotel is great.. ( and it is free). The caption was fair. ( because of cheap TV resulted poor captioning). The price was very reasonable. I would go back there again.

    « bad and good »

Scenery from my window was another building, Room was too cold and took awhile to heat up once I turned up thermostat, and bathroom door wouldn't shut. Beautiful room and lots of channels on tv, clean, had a refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot, plenty of pillows on the bed and good Pokémon location. Outside the hotel was across street from capitol and during a walk near by I saw a fountain rooftop that looked out into beautiful water. Lots of shops nearby. I told them about troubles with my room during checkout.

    « Beautiful Hotel »

Although the remodel of the Hotel was not complete this facility is absolutely gorgeous. We were disappointed to hear they knew nothing about Harley or Biker Rewards. This Hotel is directly across the street and walking distance to many great restaurant's.

    « Christy and Drew's Wedding Reception »

Wonderful location. Excellent from beginning to end. Will definitely return to this hotel. We had our wedding reception here. Everyone who attended loved the hotel, food, service. Staff catered to our every desire and then some

    « Stay here! »

Cross country trip and we stayed in a few BW's. This was one of the best Best Western Plus experiences we had. Not old and dingy like the others. Super clean, trendy, new. I suppose, what you get for an "in city" hotel. Madison is a beautiful city and it was nice to be on top of it all!

    « Great Location »

I recently stayed here for two nights while attending a conference. The location is amazing; literally right across the street from the capital. It's walking distance from just about everything downtown. The breakfast in the morning is good. Rooms are great. Overall no complaints, and I would recommend.

« Good Place in Madison »

The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful to their guests. Hotel is being updated and rooms are comfortable and very well appointed. I enjoy my many stays at this hotel, but now with the up dates it is more comfortable and the service is always great.

« Great stay at Best Western PLUS Inn on the Park »

Great place to stay. The room was huge and just beautiful. The hotel staff, even the valet, were amazingly helpful and friendly. Each staff member greeted me coming and going and went out of their way to help with directions and off time activities. I hope to stay here or another Best Western PLUS again soon.

« Best location in DT Madison WI »

Although under construction and renovation, all staff were very nice and helpful and the rooms are very good, new, clean, with great views of the capitol building. The location is perfect, the best available, if you are visiting downtown Madison and the capitol building, State Street shopping and night life.

« very nice rooms, great location »

I very much enjoyed my stay at this hotel. The facade is still undergoing renovation, but the interior is very nice. Rooms are spacious, modern and clean. A very good bed, and very nice bathroom. The gym has high-quality equipment (mainly cardio). The 'Plus' in Best Western Plus is very well deserved. The location is very nice, right at the impressive Wisconsin State Capitol building in the heart of Madison. I would most certainly consider staying here again.

    « Excellent remodeled rooms »

I was there for 2 week training. I really enjoyed the remodeled rooms, they were spacious and the Capitol view was fantastic. The pool and fitness area were also great.Although the restaurant was not open yet, it looks that it will have great potential. Paul Podehl provided me and my coworkers excellent customer service, he went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care off and had everything we needed. He is an example to follow by all other staff at the hotel that were not as nice as him. If it wasn't for the other staff that were not very helpful I would give a higher service rate. My room was not clean properly on a daily basis, so I had to call the front desk. But other than that, it was a great stay.

    « Lovey Hotel! »

I don't often think about the Best Western brand, but after this experience I will definitely consider them in the future. This property is newly renovated and lovely. The room was lovely and very comfortable. Bathroom was beautiful, with a huge shower. Although the sink could be a bit larger. Amazing location across the street from the Capitol.

    « Wonderful Hotel »

I booked this hotel not knowing its history. Very impressed. Nice, clean and comfortable rooms. The front desk staff needs to be a little more friendly. (SMILE!) :) I work in the business too, and I know it can be tiring, especially after a long day. Anyway, I had a great stay! I highly recommended.

    « Wonderful and beyound »

Best western came through in helping accommodate my group for a wedding. We had an extra person tag a long and it was wonderful that they were able to upgrade us to fit our needs. The room was better than the expensive hotel I stayed at in Vegas.

    « Wonderful experience »

The hotel is right in front of the Capitol, absolutely gorgeous sight. Walking distance from the very popular and super exciting State Street. Whether it's a street market you're looking for, a great restaurant or just to listen to the locals jamming at the corner of this street. It is perfect for the whole family. The staff, very welcoming and always very helpful. They have free shuttles to and from the airport and a very pleasant ride with their staff, absolutely an awesome experience, not one glitch :)

« Not your typical Best Western »

When I heard the wedding reception was being held at a Best Western, I was worried, but this is not your typical Best Western. Once the renovations are complete, it would be my first choice in Madison for its location and views. You must ask for a room with a view. My first room was nice but with a drab view of the roof and rear. I asked for (and paid for) an upgrade to an amazing room on the rounded corner with a spectacular view of the capitol and the lake. The room had great amenities, including refrigerator and coffee. The bathroom was large with nice toiletries. The air conditioning could have been better, but hoping that was part of the renovation fixes. The staff were all very nice and accommodating, though there was a fail when I called for the free airport shuttle. They said they'd be there in 20 minutes but when I called back after 30 they had no record of my call. They had me take a taxi that they paid for, but it wasn't a good start. Still, the free return shuttle was a bonus. Walking distance to many restaurants, and the Saturday farmers market was terrific. I was delightfully surprised by my stay.

« Realxing trip to Madison »

The hotel is under construction, however with that being said, it was beautiful, and when it is finished it will be breathtaking. The pillows were incredible, the bed was comfy, we got bumped up to a lake view room which was nice. The shower was so nice, I could have stayed there all day! The pocket door for the bathroom was the only dislike-it doesn't close all the way. The valet service was excellent, front desk help was too. I would stay there again.

« Excellent Location, Friendly Staff »

I have taken to staying at the Inn on the Park every year for IM Wisconsin since 2008. The staff is very friendly and the location, right on capitol square, cannot be beat. The bathrooms can be a little small and the rooms are a bit dated. A big caveat, however, is they were ramping up to begin a major renovation after last year's race. Cannot wait to visit to see what is in store this year.

« Currently under construction but renovation promising »

We attended a wedding on the 8th floor. Right now there is no real entry as everything is under construction. However the 8th floor were we attended a wedding reception is completed and it was very nice. Wonderful view and great area for a wedding with 100-150 guests.

« Very pricey, small bathrooms »

The hotel was under construction and the main floor lobby and restaurant were closed and a temporary lobby was established. The pool and fitness area were also closed. When I reserved this room no one mentioned the construction and the closure of the facilities. The sales staff were friendly and I was accommodated slightly for the inconvenience by asking for free parking. The daily fee is $10. I realize this was during the huge college graduation weekend, but $225 a night plus the additional 15% in state and city taxes is ridiculous. I understand location is key and their location is great, but certainly not that great! Also, the rooms were very nicely remodeled but the bathrooms are way too small without any counter top space, no tub but very nice tile shower. Not worth the price unless someone else is paying i.e. business trip.

« This hotel will be gorgeous in June »

This hotel is currently under construction. They really worked hard to keep the inconvenience to a minimum. I have stayed here prior to construction and it was nice, but this hotel will gorgeous once finished. I had a capital view, amazing. Amazing food all around, college right down the way. Madison is wonderful.

« A good hotel experience that met my needs »

I knew going in that the hotel was still undergoing extreme renovations. The hotel did send me a detailed email the week prior to check-in. The shuttle from the airport was helpful. The check-in process was easy. Only one available elevator (due to construction) was not too speedy, especially at peak times. My room was renovated and nice. Very quiet. My only complaint was low water pressure in the shower but my room seemed to be the exception on this when compared to my travel companions. My review may have been different if not for quite a bit being closed due to construction (pool, restaurant, bar). I love the location of this hotel and will definitely give it another try in the future.

« Cost of one night at the Best Western Plus Inn on the Park in Madison, WI »

The terrible high cost of $999.00 per night at this Best Western Plus Inn on the Park. Can not believe it. We have stayed a few times and did not and NEVER pay $999.00 per night at this hotel. Not ever worth it. The rooms were okay, never seen many workers around this hotel no matter what time you were there. Restaurant workers were just okay. Still can not believe that people would ever pay $999.00 a night. I am retired and can sure put this amount of money towards many more beautiful places to stay a night. This is so terrible that they can get away with this. Sure would like to know who to contact to complain about this, but sure it would not do any good. Again, terrible price to charge for one night to stay at this hotel. Never would again......

« Clean rooms and nice staff »

Stayed here last summer for a conference in town and got 2 rooms. I had students in 1 one room and myself in the other. The students said their room was nice (I only saw it from the door) but they had a nice suite with a room and a lounge area with a pull out couch. I was told the pull out couches mattress was terrible, but the rest was fine. My room was a typical room, but nice and clean. The staff was attentive and happy to help us. Traveling for business, it was nice that they had a shuttle to and from the airport and there was luggage check that we were able to use when we checked out the morning of our flight - We were able to check everything then go to the conference and come back after and pick up our stuff and catch the shuttle.

    « A great location and a step back in the 1980s »

This is a very strange hotel and it is quite hard to write a coherent review because it has great aspects and pretty odd ones. Let me start with the great. The location is ideal for the first time Madison visitor that I was: literally on Capitol square in the middle of it all, a minute walk from State street, quite close to the University, and of course Capitol Square is home to the wonderful Farmer's market (except during winter months). Basic rooms do not have a view, but if you buy one of the more expensive ones, views of the lake or Capitol are lovely. This is what I bought and as I value a view and woke up very early every morning, I was very glad I did even though there was roadwork and façade work in front of my room when I was there which was occasionally less than pleasant. Work also meant no swimming pool (I believe that there is one normally) and a slightly awkward approach to the hotel from the street. A third great thing is that the hotel offers complementary shuttle to/from the airport. It is slightly awkward when you arrive (you need to call them when you have your luggage, then you wait outside for about 20 minutes and they come) but easy to book on the return. Beyond those lovely sides which should be enough to make the hotel a wonderful place to stay, the most striking thing is how it reminded me of large US chain hotels in the 1980s! The décor of the common parts as well as the room is very dated (think improbably carpet colours, dark woods, dark everything), the food is dated (think steaks with a tonne of fried onions and salad with blue cheese dressing) and the long corridors make the hotel strangely feel bigger and more impersonal than it is, because in fact, staff is pleasant and helpful and quite personable. With that in mind, and if one expects a fair, solid, and extremely well located 3/3.5* hotel, this is certainly a good choice and I would have no hesitation to return to it for my next visit to Madison, if only for the pleasure of stepping out to the Saturday farmer's market and the chance of nice views.

    « Good Location »

For now, the only reason to return to this hotel is that it is close to the State Capitol and UW-Madison. The construction made getting in and out of the parking ramp a little difficult. There was a problem with our reservation, and to be fair, the man at the front desk did his best to make it right. It was not a relaxing stay between the noise from the construction outside, and the thin walls meant you heard anything that was going on out in the hallway. The hallways and rooms are outdated and sparse, so I hope they plan on renovating the interior of the hotel too. When trying to use the shower, the faucet in the tub flew off and hit my shins, leaving the rusty spigot to pelt me with water. That was a first!!!

    « Go Elsewhere »

Under construction so plan on a 7am wake up call if not earlier. Staff is indifferent to you being there. Our reservation was wrong and the staff said they couldn't do anything for us but one call to the housing bureau and magically it was fixed. It seemed that their mistake was too much of an inconvenience to address. "Room with a view" of a distant lake in places if you look beyond the back of the other building in the foreground. Stayed twice now for business, not again.

    « Location, Location, Location! »

I recently stayed one night while I was in town for a friend's wedding. The key to this hotel is the location, there are many restaurants and bars within walking distance. The best part of our stay was waking up Saturday morning and walking across the street to the giant farmer's market on the capital square. Our room didn't have a great view at all; in fact, we looked out over an air conditioning unit and a brick wall. Check in took a long time as there was only one front desk attendant and it was prime check-in time. It also took about 15 minutes to drop our car with the valet and another 10 minutes to get the car at checkout. The bed in our room was the smallest "queen" bed I ever slept in and the hotel was pretty outdated. I did use the fitness facility in the hotel which was very nice with newer equipment.

    « Extremely disappointed »

I come to Madison for work a couple times per year and decided to stay here. I was beyond disappointed. In all fairness, I did like the location (see pic) and the mattress was AWESOME. I slept great. This is where the pros end. Here is a list of my issues: 1. The customer service is horrendous. This hotel needs to train every single employee. The young man that checked me in when I arrived seemed like he was doing me a favor. I was not greeted as a Rewards member. My wife dropped her wallet and we were worried looking for it and could care less. I didn't expect him to help us look even though he was not busy but he could at least look concerned. 2. I was charged for parking even though the website states it is free. I complained and it was deducted but that is not right. See attached pic of parking stub and of the website where it lists parking as free. 3. I called before making my reservation and asked about the hours for the pool. I was given the hours but not told it was closed for remodeling/construction. Why was I not told that? Who cares what the hours are if the pool is CLOSED??? See pics of posted signs. 4. I only stayed one night, thank God and this morning as I was gathering my belongings, noticed that there was so much garbage behind the TV, that it was disgusting. They do not clean here. See pic. 5. Tge bathroom is so small that you can't brush your teeth or wash your hands without your knees touching the toilet bowl. I am not even going to get into the construction because it may be needed...but it is extremely noisy and annoying. Do not stay here!!!

« Excellent location in downtown Madison »

The hotel is located in downtown Madison right across the street from the Capitol building. There are plenty of eating and drinking establishments within walking distance. Some rooms offer views of the lake or of the Capitol.

    « Better than I expected »

When I was told that the office had booked me into this hotel I was quite alarmed, as I have never had any good experiences from the Best Western brand. However it turned out better than I expected. Yes, the hotel building and rooms are tired, probably late Eighties and never re-touched. So the decor is very dated. But they keep the hotel spotlessly clean, the staff are friendly and the elevators work well. The best thing by far about this hotel is its location, which is very central, close to lots of bars and restaurants and other things to do. There's a Starbucks 200 yards down the road for breakfast, and a lovely cheese shop almost next door for snacks.

« good location for a conference downtown, but wouldn't stay there for regular rates »

Was there for a conference in late October at the Monona Terrace. Great location. There were 3 of us in a double bed room. Room was clean - I checked surfaces for dust, cobwebs, and even the vents weren't dusty. A bit noisy as we had rooms facing the rear, so we had bars and night noise, and construction noise during the morning/daytime. So the room was adequate and clean, but I can't believe the normal rate is $200 a night - the conference rate was $129 a night. My brother and his wife came for one night to see us during the conference, and he's a Best Western elite member, but he had to still pay for his room. I thought that was awful - if you have rewards with BW you should be able to use them without 'blackout dates'. And whomever he talked to when he made his reservation didn't tell him he couldn't use his rewards. He's never experienced that before EVER in all his travels around the Midwest, even in large cities like Madison. I know it's by the capital and a good location, and there were conferences going on, but come on! That was the main reason I made this a 3-star review. Another thing was that the HVAC system didn't go lower than 68 degrees in our room - it was hot and stuffy with 3 of us, even with the window open. I turned the fan on to 'cool' but it only went to 68 degrees, no lower. and it shut off intermittently and didn't cool the whole time. I forgot to mention it to the front desk when we left.

« Best choice for lodging in Madison »

I first selected the Inn because of the Best Western brand. However, on numerous trips to Madison, I discovered that it is by far the best option for me--close to Starbucks and fabulous eateries nearby, convenient valet service and reasonable overnight parking, free Internet and a welcoming and accommodating staff. Rooms are terrific with great amenities. I have no reason to look or stay elsewhere when in Madison.

« Best Western Plus on the Park »

Hotel right on the capitol square. Great location. Clean. Good room with great view. Valet parking very reasonable at $10 with in and out privileges. Farmer market right across the street. Room very quiet

    « Downtown destination »

This hotel is right across the street from the capitol and so it is impossible to get lost in the downtown area. Just head for the big dome! Very close to excellent restaurants, museums, campus, etc. The pool makes it family friendly as well. Clean, comfortable, and welcoming. We would stay again.

    « Over Priced »

Rooms were in short supply in Madison the weekend of our stay so the Inn on the Park took advantage to charge a premium rate which is understandable. It was nice to find a place to stay downtown but this really average hotel lacks the presence a $200+ room should.

    « Location, Location, Location »

We paid a premium for this hotel given its proximity to an event we were attending. It was definitely worth the extra money to be so close to the Terrace; however, if I was just visiting Madison I would've been disappointed with the accommodations given the price we paid. When we first checked-in we weren't ready to give up our car which was a bit of a hassle. You can't just park in the lot; you have to valet. This was a repeated pain throughout our stay. Just grabbing a jacket out of the car turned into a 20 minute ordeal if you were not the one holding the valet ticket. (And then you have to tip someone for running to another building to grab your jacket for you. And by the way you also have to pay to valet.) So yeah, that's a pain. The first room we were offered had an OVERWHELMING smell of smoke. I should've checked behind the door or in the closet - someone had to have been actively smoking in the room when we opened the door for it to be that bad. Honestly, we didn't even make it into the room. Luckily the front desk staff was great. They got us into a new room immediately even though they were sold out. Can't say enough great things about how easy they made that process (still a process - but they were great). Our second room was larger with a much smaller bathroom. The space was great given we had three of us travelling together. Unfortunately the room had a horrible high-pitched noise that kept us awake through the night. Maintenance came to the room at 9am the next morning - exactly when they said he'd be there. He diagnosed the issue as an exchange between the AC and the heater (it was in the 40s at night and in the 70s during the day during our stay). When the HVAC tried to regulate the temperature in the room we got the horrible squeak. The only fix was to disconnect wither the heat or the AC. I'm grateful they were able to diagnose the problem and address it; however, it ate an hour of my trip and I got to choose to be either hot or cold at a premium rate. While the maintenance guy was in the room I had the patio door to the pool area open. As soon as he left I went to close the patio door and a young man (early 20s) was walking into my room through the open patio door. I confronted him and he immediately tried to play it off like he was looking for the exit (through a guest room?) When continued to walk towards him to get him out of my room there were two other young men, similarly aged, playing look-out for him in the pool area. It was wholly unacceptable. It was unnerving. And I was concerned for the security of the contents of our room the remainder of the trip. I stay at a lot of hotels - from economy to five star - and I never have this many issues. I have to say, it was frustrating. The staff was great through it all; however, the staff should not have to be great in these situations because I shouldn't be put in these situations when I pay to stay someplace. I will say the location was fabulous. We were delighted at the huge farmers market that was set up around the capitol on Saturday morning. Access to the Terrace was amazing. And the great coffee shop around the corner was delightful when the in room coffee situation at the hotel was bleak. Pros: - Location, location, location - Fun, friendly staff Cons: - Ongoing maintenance issues - Lack of security - Valet only parking make vehicle access a pain - half the hotel opens up to the pool so you are at the mercy of the guests using the pool for noise. Overall: If all you need is location, this is a great hotel. I know it was a huge difference maker for our trip. The location definitely was the highlight.

« Well located hotel near the capitol and within walking distance of the university »

The room was clean and good, with comfortable beds. The bathroom was a bit dated. Our fifth floor room faced away from the front, capitol side. It was noisy because several bars were located below, across the street and a construction project on the street below disturbed our sleep, with loud construction equipment noise each morning. Parking is available in the building at a cost of $10 per night. Free breakfast is not offered, but there are many places to get it in the surrounding area or at the hotel.

    « Location - Unbelievable; Hotel - Suitable »

I stayed at this hotel this past weekend for the UW-Iowa football game. I had been looking for months for a hotel near campus which was under $350/night... and finally the week before the game this hotel opened up at the right price and I jumped at the chance to stay here. Overall, the experience at the hotel was fine... but the biggest selling point is clearly the outstanding location. We had four people in a 2-Queen room... we're close friends and we don't usually spend more than 2 hours awake total in the room for a long weekend. The room was average size, with a lake view on the 6th floor. Room could have used more lighting for non-day time and the carpet/bedding felt like it was due for an upgrade. The bathroom was tiny but the shower was new. The room did have a fridge (nice) but no microwave (definitely would be worth the $25/room cost the hotel would have to pay for new ones). The room, in the end, was suitable for what we needed though... sleeping for 6 hours/night and a place to get dressed/ready for bed. The hotel is ON the Capitol Square, home of tons of great restaurants/bars and a short walk to the top of State Street. Great, great location. We walked through the farmer's market on Sat morning and really enjoyed it. Props to the bartender who let us buy a six-pack of beer from him to take up to our room... we came back late on Friday and wanted one more beer in the room and he was accommodating. The valet parking was nice/quick... but we weren't aware that the second car for the room would be double the normal charge ($20/night versus $10). In the end it's still reasonable for two cars to be valet parked in downtown Madison for two days for $60. But having planned on $40 and getting told about it after my car was pulled up wasn't the best. In the end, this hotel is perfect for short trips where you won't be in the room much. That's why I would definitely come back here. If you're looking for more comfort/amenities, you probably have better options downtown though.

« Customer Service? Nope. They don't care. »

I realize that customer service is a dying industry. But, working in customer care myself for many years in various industries, I have spent that time bending over backwards for loyal customers to keep them loyal or new customers to inspire them to return. That includes making special accommodations when asked and dispensing with a policy if it means keeping someone happy. I was scheduled to be in Madison next week and made a reservation for 4 nights on Points. Yes, I saw that there was a 4 night minimum and that the reservation's cancellation date was a week prior to check in. However, a change of plans required me only to have to stay one night. So, believing that Best Western's Customer Service policy would be to do one's best to keep a guest happy, I called the hotel. Now, I spent 8 years in the hotel business in time gone by and EVERY time a guest asked for an accommodation, they were granted it. THAT is superior customer care. Years ago I also worked at a Best Western and I took a Best Western Customer Care seminar called "I Care" and the thrust of it was CARE ABOUT YOUR GUEST'S NEEDS AND DO YOUR BEST TO KEEP THEM HAPPY. Apparently, this hotel does not subscribe to that philosophy. Best Western International should take notice of how this hotel is run, because they not only did not work with me or even remotely try to provide what I believe to be excellent customer service, they failed twice. I called the hotel. I told them from the get go that I was aware of the 4 night minimum as well as the cancellation date but told them my plans had changed and I only needed a room for the first night. I asked if they would kindly make an exception to their policies. They said no, they would not make an exception. They next told me that I could either cancel the entire reservation or cancel the last three nights but have my points taken away for the first night WITHOUT letting me actually stay there. There is some sort of Expo in town. I didn't know about the Expo, I am not coming for the Expo, I don't care about the Expo. I just think it is patently unfair to charge me points for a night when they are not allowing me to actually sleep there. They should either cancel the entire reservation without penalty as a good will gesture or they should take my points for the first night and also give me a room for the points they will be taking. I called Best Western International Customer Care and spoke to a representative who said he would call the hotel management and negotiate on my behalf. They also told him I was **** out of luck. I stayed at this hotel before and found the staff to be extremely unfriendly and inattentive. I would not have chosen to stay there again except that the location was the most convenient for me. So, this is now TWICE that I have found the attitudes and service to be substandard. Yes ... I know that their response would be that they do not have to release me or not penalize me. I KNOW that my request involved a departure from their "policies," but that is what you do when one of your guests asks. They will say that because of the Expo all their guests (though I do not believe that ... everyone coming to Madison is coming for the Expo) are staying for four nights. OK ... then give them my room for the four nights and let me keep my points. To take the points for a night and not let me stay that night is robbery. So, yes, I KNOW the policies, but good customer service in ANY industry dictates that you do whatever you can to empathize with your customers and do whatever it takes to keep them happy and loyal. I had thought my last experience there might have been an anomaly and most likely their staff and management are usually excellent. Not so. I am VERY disappointed with this hotel and very disappointed with Best Western International Customer Care that they have so little influence with their hotels and were unable to inspire this particular hotel to live the customer care policies they train. I also worked at 4 Marriotts in the past. They would have been able to reach out and obtain satisfaction when contacted by an unhappy guest. That is why I generally stay at Marriotts. Best Western doesn't hold a candle to them.
