The Best Western City Hotel Leiden is located in Leiden's city of discovery, and lies in the heart of this historical city, within walking distance of many shopping streets and museums, including Museum de Lakenhal, where masterpieces by Rembrandt, Jan Steen and Lucas van Leyden can be admired. The Best Western City Hotel Leiden combines traditional and contemporary influences and offers you a pleasant stay. The hotel is located in three monumental historic buildings that were fully renovated. Our 3 Star hotel offers 39 rooms, which are spread over four floors. Each hotel room is decorated in a different style. The rooms are comfortable and feature modern furnishings, a double or twin bed, a safe, telephone, television and radio, as well as a bathroom with shower and toilet. Our Junior Suites are spacious and have a cozy sitting area. Leiden has a rich history and is known for its beautiful canals, historic buildings and culture. The city is also called the City of Knowledge, as it is famous for its science and research. The University of Leiden is the oldest university in Holland, it was founded in 1575. Leiden is also called the 'City of Discovery'. It is the place where Rembrandt was born and learned to paint, where Doctor Boerhaave taught, and where the first Dutch tulips were brought into blossom, about four hundred years ago. Leiden is a wonderful city to explore for leisure travelers, but business guests are also very welcome at our hotel. It has very convenient conference facilities, such as a multifunctional conference room with all amenities. Our staff will be happy to answer all your questions regarding meetings and conferences.

    « average »

Room was nice even tough the switch for the light was at the entrance and when in the room, ready to go to be, you have to get up and follow 6 m wall before reaching the bed on the way back. Do not imaging having any light during the night ;-) The night was ok though, even if the church nearby reminds you we are with many Christians in the neighbourhood. Breakfast is ok. Not fantastic, just average. Would love an espresso or capuccino from the beautiful machine in the morning ;-)

« Decent stay in the city center »

If you want to visit the vivid city of Leiden and your looking for an affordable place to stay, Best Western could be an option. However, with tiny but tidy rooms, a defective heating in the bathroom and no commands for the lights in the neighborhood of the bed, you can hardly say that the rooms fit 2016 standards. Breakfast is basic but OK.

« Great location, fine for what it is »

Can't beat the location in central Leiden. We could walk or bike everywhere from the hotel. The rooms were small (by US standards, normal size for a 3-star European hotel). Breakfast was fine, many options and good coffee. Free wifi was a nice bonus but very spotty. Staff was pleasant. We chose this hotel because we had a car and it was walking distance-approx 1.5 km- to the parking lot just outside the busy center (parking in Dutch cities can be impossible). This hotel is built inside an old building on a pretty street with great restaurants and nice shops on the same block. We weren't expecting much given our experience with last minute bookings of "3-star" European hotels so frankly it was nicer than expected.

    « Not bad but... »

Nice city, very recommended to stay. But hotel is just for bed and breakfast. Bathtub was out of order, WiFi was almost out, hard to find how to tun overall light on. It is nice that students uses the facility for their party, but expect that it will end in the middle of the night and on the morning you'll "smell" the party all over the place. Apart of that - quite good place to stay, especially with tight window decreasing the noise and air conditioning allowing you to stay alive with closed window.

    « Disappointing »

One example which makes the situation clear.the shower leaked into the bedroom due to poor design. This could be easily and cheaply rectified.however it is a longstanding problem they know about it but are not prepared to do anything about it. They do not seem to care, the hotel is full so why should they! Will not be in a hurry to return

    « good location »

pros: free wifi free tea/coffee/hot chocolate owner is nice location good, next to canal lifts cons: not much breakfast options. basic no phones in room no good views no airconditioning basically its ok for a night.

« Very basic hotel -- there are better alternatives »

IN SHORT: I would not particularly recommend this hotel -- there are certainly better alternatives in this price range. IN DETAIL: The rooms are fairly small and basic: most of what you need is there, but it's fairly bare-bones, and not nicely decorated in any way: cheap ikea lamps, bed without a headboard, ? Very soft beds. The bathroom is nicely redone, but due to the low ceiling and the elevated floor, it feels claustrophobic. On top of that, there is no extractor fan to get rid of the humidity when you shower, and because the shower is very open, most of the bathroom floor is flooded with water after just a few minutes. Not a very pleasant experience, even less so because there is a safety card instructing you not to open the bathroom door after you shower, as the steam might set off the fire alarm! The corridor to get to the room smells moist and has a low ceiling and uneven floors. Breakfast is alright, but nothing special. When I went in at 7.30 on a weekday, the breakfast room was empty without any staff in sight for about 15 minutes, and with many refrigerated items still wrapped in plastic. Pluses are its central location (Lange Mare), the complimentary coffee at the reception, and the excellent wifi connection.

« Very basic for the price »

Welcome was friendly. Room was a good size but had a strange selection of mismatched furniture including a huge wardrobe with no hanging rail so my suit had to go on the hat stand. Bed was a bit broken but fairly comfortable. View onto central void was not pretty. Room also smelt strongly of disinfectant. Bathroom small with difficult layout (very little space for toiletries and it flooded when showering). As others have said the local church bell chimes every half an hour and it is LOUD in the room so needed the coffee from the tired breakfast buffet in the morning. As a chain hotel charging these prices I was surprised how poor it was. I would not stop there again.

    « Oh the bells!! »

This hotel has a great location and is picturesque as shown in the photos. The room I had when I stayed was almost like a mini loft apartment with a wooden floor looking out over the rooftops. Two things were disappointing - the breakfast wasn't up to much and the coffee was really weak (I like an espresso based coffee, not a big vat of filter). There is a church nearby and unfortunately the bells weren't silenced at night, which meant that every 1/2hr there was a strike. Some of my colleagues were up all night, I'm a heavy sleeper and even I was awoken a couple of times in the night. Maybe this was a one off??

    « 4 NIGHT STAY »

Stayed at this hotel while visiting my daughter at University. Hotel location 5 minutes from railway station - upteen local restaurants, eateries, coffee houses - spoilt for choice :) Room was clean and facilities all worked - TV, walk-in shower, phone, wifi etc. Staff were very pleasant and helpful. Breakfast was fine for me, which I had each morning. I enjoyes my stay there, and would certainly book again.... 10/10

    « Disappointing »

The interior of the hotel needs a tremendous amount of TLC to bring it up to current day standards for a hotel within this group. A very unattractive lobby. In the room things got worse with the toilet bowl/seat not straight, no curtains of suitable wall height in the shower to prevent water from going all over the bathroom floor, no headboard on the bed to prevent pillows from falling off the bed. A broken glass in one of the double glazed windows. A dining room that was dismal and furniture totally out of character and the "hot" food for breakfast was always under an acceptable temperature. The décor and layout of the restaurant and bar area made no appeals to draw us back for any evening meals or desire to relax over a cocktail or two, it was tacky...... This hotel in in the centre of the city and does nothing to attract a visitor especially as it is supposed to be 3 star rated, except, the front desk staff were very pleasant and helpful. Ideally located for the city, there was no adequate car parking other than meters at 13.20 Euros (£10.34/$ US 15.11) per day. There were two hot tubs on the 4th floor but both were empty and filthy, not at all inviting. Although it wasn't the fault of the hotel, the close church bells ringing out every hour and half hour made sleeping almost impossible, no proper sleep for four nights. Won't be staying there again.

« Supedrb position, but facilities disappointing and overpriced »

We selected this hotel for five nights in Leiden because of its position in the old town. We upgraded our reservation a few days before arrival and were charged thr full price for the upgraded room, while we were in fact put in a smaller and more uncomfortable room. However, the next day this was put right. We were surprised at the variety of smells and stale air in various parts of the hotel, not least in the reception. The plastic flowers in the restaurant and elsewhere were not counterbalanced by the colourful paintings of flowers in the freshly painted rooms. The breakfast was adequate, but totally unremarkable, and it was difficult in this hotel to imagine the generally high quality of Dutch cheese and flowers. The internet was very slow and not reliable. The best point was that the bedrooms were kept nice and clean. We found that 760 Euros were too much for five nights here.

« Tastefully decorated but very noisy! »

The hotel is located in a nice area and very close to the shops ! However the bell tower in the area chimes at every hour and the traffic noise is too near! Hence we were left counting the strokes of the bell each hour!!! And so inadequate sleep before a 60 k cycle ride! Very nice and helpful hotel staff

« Brilliant staff made up for other shortcomings »

We arrived wet and tired after a long bike trip. The reception staff were amazingly helpful with restaurant reservation, bike storage and also resolving room mix up. The hotel is in a great location but was busy and quite noisy. The room was in need of an update but OK for mid range hotel. Down side - there was a nasty smell of stale smoke in the bathroom, breakfast was very mediocre.

    « Good for job »

I choose this hotel because close to the railstation and in the center of the Town. Clean, silent, with a good breakfast, in a fantastic position in Leiden. Rooms are little as the bathroom. The hotel is ideal for who doesn't like the car to reach his job.

We spent 5 nights at the hotel. the room was not big but comfortable The bed excelent. Breakfast very good. for a 3 stars hotel it was much more than suficient. The staff at the reception desk , very helpfull The location is very good specially for those who want the museum quarter

« Great breakfast and you get used to the bells »

This hotel is in a great spot. The staff are helpful and friendly. The rooms are a decent size...of course some bigger than others. Rooms are pretty clean. Breakfast INCLUDED! And it's a great one at that! Can pay upwards of €15 for a similar breakfast at other hotels. Just be aware that an old church is across the street and the bells do ring every hour.

    « No wonder it's a 3-star »

It's a 3-star because there was a pillar right between the single beds. There was also a pillar right in front of our room so guests can accidentally hit their head if they're giving us a visit. There's not much blockage in the bathroom so most likely water will leak out the door. Also, there was a sign saying that the room is fitted with a sensitive alarm so it is requested to have the door closed when showering. This bewildered me. Power points are high up, a little inaccessible if not dangerous for the younger ones. I would like to add that I was satisfied with the breakfast.

« A rather old hotel in Leiden »

We selected thr hotel due to its distance to the central station. Rather an old hotel. The cabling of lights, tv is not designed well. In our room we gave a pillar at the middle of the room. The furniture is old, the matres is larger than the bed. Breakfast is average. Staff is OK.

« Perfectly located to explore old Leiden »

Very nice and spacious rooms, friendly staff, parking a bit of an issue but with solutions available, but above all very well located hotel to explore the magnificent old city center of Leiden. Den Hague, Amsterdam, Utrecht and Rotterdam are also within short driving distance. Very suitable location for a city trip or for business.

« Comfortable bed, good shower and breakfast, but poor wifi »

Stayed for two nights on a business trip. Hotel is in the city centre and very close to a number of restaurants. Efficient check in. Room was comfortable, however closet sliding doors do not close easily. Powerful shower, but no shower curtain or door - hence rest of the bathroom floor gets wet. Free wifi, with SSIDs corresponding to each floor. But not all of them had internet access. My room was on the 2nd floor, but the only SSID with internet access was the one on the 4th floor and it kept dropping. Good choice at breakfast which was included in my room rate.

« The location is great »

We stayed here for several nights - half work and half holiday. The location of this hotel is its best selling point. It is but a skip and a hop and you are in the middle of the shopping district and it's also not a million miles from the station. The hotel room itself was fine. It's not 5 star luxury and it could be roomier but it was comfortable enough. The beds were a bit too soft and the old cinema chairs weren't that comfy after a while. The wifi signals were good and strong. The breakfast wasn't bad but the restaurant did look a bit 70s. The breakfast selection was good with a mixture of hot and cold dishes. The coffee was a on the weak side for me. We also had dinner here the first night with a couple of colleagues/friends as it was pouring with rain and we didn't fancy walking around looking for somewhere to eat. Dinner was certainly good value but there was no atmosphere there whatsoever. In fact, the waiting staff looked a bit surprised to see 5 customers walked in. But then the food turned out really nice and we had a pleasant evening; they did light a few candles to make is cozy (gezellig!). It's hard to believe, but the hotel has a jacuzzi on the roof. It's also the only designated smoking area. I had a look but didn't try it out. The hotel staff were friendly. We didn't have any problems so cannot say whether they were particularly helpful. One thing to bear in mind - right opposite the hotel is the Marekerk (worth a quick look around inside) and its clock chimes at the hour and half-hour all day and all night...

    « Absolutely not recommended »

Very simply the worst hotel I have stayed in a long while. Manageable things: weak breakfast, old and untidy look of the common areas, broken room door handle. Unmanageable: smell of mold, smell of sewage, the overflowing shower due to clogged drain. Would I ever stay here again?: NO

    « Great Bike store! »

The hotel is tired and for the money not as good value as others we stayed in on our trip, but the staff are really helpful and despite its limitations it was a comfortable stopover. We stored our Bikes in the ballroom/theatre....made it very easy to sort things out

    « Leiden is lovely »

Our final vacation night was spent here because the location was recommended to us...the city was beautiful. The weather was nice too. Spent the day at the markets in town shopping, having delicious meals, and ice cream. Just a short train ride from here to the airport. Enjoyed our visit. Best Western was a great choice for our stay!

    « Great Staff »

Really appreciated being able to leave our bikes secure in one of the hotel's meeting rooms. The rooms and bathrooms felt tired for a Best Western, however the breakfast was excellent and exceeded our expectations. The reception guy was a class act, very efficient and very laid-back. We really enjoyed our stay in Leiden and the hotel was in a great location.
