    « Ideal Location »

The hotel couldn't be in a more ideal location. It's less than a 10 minute walk to the harbour, the beach and the market. The hotel itself is beautiful, in an old Victorian house with tall ceilings and unique decor. The staff were friendly, in particular the male night-porter we found to be so friendly and helpful! There is also a garden out the back for some quiet time and also handy for smokers. Perfect hotel when visiting La Rochelle for a few days!

« Great hotel. Lovely staff. »

Just five minutes walking from the shopping centre and the harbour area you find this lovely hotel. It's situated in an old beautiful building and it's all looking great. The welcome at the reception desk was warm and friendly. Our room was great, good beds. Lovely breakfast.

« Faded but charming and dog friendly too! »

Loved this hotel, from its original grand staircase and bar, lounge area to its spacious yet enclosed garden where if the weather was good you could eat breakfast. There is secure parking next door €12 paid at hotel and a park nearby to walk the dogs. On arrival we received a genuine welcome for both us and our dogs from the receptionist. Though our room was slightly faded it was full of period features and character and was spacious with good bathroom facilities. The hotel has a bar but no restaurant though there are plenty within walking distance. We were there on a Sunday and found the majority of the bars and restaurant shut which was a disappointment.

« The most friendly and helpful staff »

Our experience seemed to reflect what others have said in that nothing seemed to be too much trouble for the staff. There were a few little things I would change but all of these are typical of a 3 star hotel although this one had lots of character. Didn't try the breakfast - don't like much to eat at this time of day and a coffee and croissant in a nice harbour side cafe had too much appeal.

« Good location, made to feel very welcome. »

We arrived before check in time but this was no problem, as we were immediately booked in by the very charming and helpful receptionist. This hotel is in a lovely old building and our room reflected this with its tasteful decoration, high ceilings, and large comfortable bed. Hotel Champlain was easy to find via sat nav, and parking was available either in the next door garage (bit of a steep narrow ramp) or plenty of public parking in the square next block over. The port with its bars and restaurants is just a few minutes walk through the shopping area - this has got to be one of the best places to stay in La Rochelle.

« Good hotel in a nice part of La Rochelle »

Very nice building in a relatively quiet street. Nice location 10-15 minutes away from the harbor. Breakfast free for children. Nice garden. The staff was very helpful, except when the wifi was not working properly. One of the rooms was a bit noisy.

    « A gem of a place »

A 3 star hotel with class. We weren't expecting much however it delivered. Like a backdrop to a faulty towers scene the hotel was amazing and old and dated. The service was great. The garden is spectacular and the breakfast more than adequate. The rooms are very large and comfortable with large windows. Get a lower floor overlooking the back garden! We had a drink late at night in the bar and had to wait to be served by the older gentleman manning the front desk. It felt great to be sitting in one of the 3 rooms that make up the bar and once again I couldn't help but think it was such an underrated hotel. Would stay again and again. Thank you!

« Nice and clean hotel »

Good location in the center of the city in a very nice building, room was excellent good bed, friendly and helpfull personel , breakfast was excellent; nice garden in the back of the hotel, modern and classic parts

    « Perfection! »

We could not be happier with our stay here. The room was spacious and beautifully furnished. The staff went out of their way to ensure we were comfortable and getting everything out of our stay there. The gardens are an oasis of calm after a busy day in the old port. We stayed 4 nights and would stay there again if we return to La Rochelle. Our French is only ok but all of the staff spoke enough English that we didn't feel out of our depth. The bathtub didn't drain as efficiently as it could but it wasn't a big enough problem to complain about. But when we were leaving we were told that one days breakfast for the two of us had been taken off the bill because the maid mentioned that our bathtub didn't drain quickly enough! Amazing customer service!

« Great stay in La Rochelle »

As others have noted, this hotel is within walking distance of the port and restaurants, making it a very convenient location. The staff are all friendly and helpful, parking is available at a garage next door for a fee, and the rooms are very spacious. This was our second stay here and we would gladly return again.

    « Great location »

Spent 3 nights in this hotel and it met all our expectations. It was so peaceful considering it was only a few minutes walk from the main tourist areas. The hotel maintains elements of grandeur but at the same time offers all the modern facilities. Breakfast was superb with lots of choice and nice to sit outside on the terrace overlooking the tranquil garden. Rooms are a good size and beds comfortable. Staff very friendly. Would definitely stay again.

    « Very good location »

Very good location, down town. Close to the high street, bars and restaurants. Friendly and helpful stuff. Nice rooms, clean and modern, just ain't small. The only issue sometimes the wifi was very slow, almost unusable.

« Great location and great value »

This hotel is in a great, quiet location, its a 5 minute walk to the port and 5 minutes to the market. We've stayed here before and this year we had a lovely room overlooking the garden. Rooms are a good size and the bathroom had a shower and bath. Staff are friendly. Unusually, there's a garden at the back of the hotel and you can take breakfast on the terrace there if the weather permits. There's also a stylish bar. We haven't had breakfast there, we usually go to a local cafe as there are lots around to choose from. Good wifi.

    « Comfortable central base »

Just back from 4 nights at this hotel. Met all expectations from previous reviewers. Rooms are spacious and well equipped if somewhat dated in style but bathroom was very modern. Bed was large and comfortable, plenty of sotrage space. Asked for room overlooking garden, but was allocated one with a street view. No problem in the end as there was very little noise. Breakfast was excellent and served in a lovely room overlooking the garden. Would certainly stay here again and totally recommend.

    « A gem in La Rochelle »

Every now and again you come across a hotel where you feel at home immediately. This is one of them. We have stayed in La Rochelle before at a good hotel, but this is better. The accommodation is good, but what makes the hotel is the staff. From the friendly greeting when we arrived to the Night Porter offering me a coffee when we left early. Brilliant. We will be back to La Rochelle, and we'll be staying at The Champlain.

    « Very bad Wifi »

First off, couldn't find the hotel as it's not marked on the corner of hotel. It just says hotel. After traversing the town 3 times I got google earth to find the hotel for me. Lovely staff and a good breakfast. But the wifi was appalling, some how its left a review on an ibis hotel. Which I wouldn't stay in if you paid me. Registering different devices and giving once only codes in this day and age is unbelievable.

    « Pretty good 3-star hotel - looking a bit worn »

I liked the Champlain - the building is quite old, and it could definitely use a coat of paint on the front, but it was a decent value. Everything worked fine - good WiFi, comfortable bed, plenty of hot water, etc. I never eat the hotel's breakfast in France, and instead go in search of a nearby boulangerie and a source of fresh squeezed OJ. Those were easy to find. The hotel is located a block from the local bus terminal, from which you can get to many places in the region. I took the 3B bus to the Ile de Ré. It's about a 10 minute walk through the old town to the Grand Horloge passageway to the old harbor and a couple of minutes further to the three distinctive towers for which La Rochelle is well known. If you arrive/depart via train and are traveling relatively light, you can take the #1 bus in front of the train station to the nearby bus terminal, and save money over cab fare.

    « Ok hotel »

Good helpful staff and a central location, the hotel is a bit tired and needs work. The breakfast was good and the rooms of a good size. needs a renovation to bring it up to standard. Well sited for tourist actives.

    « Wow! A perfect, charming hotel! »

Overnight flight to La Rochelle--never have stay or visited here. Picked based on TripAdvisor reviews: They were spot on perfect. Wonderful staff at front desk. Great location if you are traveling for vacation and or business. Clean, comfortable beds and liens. Nice bathroom and shower too. The quintessential French breakfast (great coffee!). I would certainly stay again and I recommend this hotel!

« Superb service and location »

What a wonderful hotel this is with a peaceful and beautiful garden in the centre of this fascinating town. You cannot fault the service and you get a good breakfast. We have stayed here at least six times.

    « Cycling Holiday »

Nothing was too much trouble. Rooms very comfortable. Parking very tight, if in a larger car. Overall a great location with friendly and helpful staff and would stay again and recommend. Breakfast was good! Lots of choice.

    « great location »

this hotel was a great find, we jumped on the bus at the airport instead of a taxi. the price was 1. 25 euros instead of 15 euros for the taxi. it took 15 minutes to get to the bus station at la rochelle and a 2 min walk to the hotel. the hotel itself was clean ,a couple of lovely rooms just off reception. our room was in the new wing and it was just right for what we wanted, a large bed ,safe, an ok shower, and automatic shutters to keep the noise and light out so we could sleep. we never made breakfast so I cant say what that was like. we were there for 2 nights. also the staff were very friendly and helpful. turn left outside the hotel, then a right and you are 10 min walk from the port. and 5 min from the market.

    « Close to perfect »

A good hotel must have comfort and helpful staff. Add to that a central yet peaceful location, parking in the heart if the town, and a good price and you have something close to perfect. And that is exactly what Le Champlain is - close to perfection. Our splendid room in the historic building was large and classic, with a huge bed, gilt mirrors, marble fireplace, swagged curtains and even Limoges china for our tea/coffee. All very Louis Seize. What was very 21st Century was a large and well appointed bathroom, with his and hers sinks. Not to mention bath robes and slippers. Free Wi-Fi completed the joys of room 18, which overlooked the splendid garden. Le Champlain's public areas too had the same sense of style and space. Nor could the staff be faulted. The reception staff were helpful in every circumstance and the chambermaids kept everything immaculate. This was five star service.

    « 50th birthday trip »

Great hotel and location .staff very helpful .couldn't fault it .and had an upgrade which was nice large room .good value .easy to find close to bus stops 10 minutes from the airport. 5 minutes to the port .

« Lovely room in city centre and close to market and port »

Big, well-furnished rooms with exquisite old furniture but new fittings where you want them i.e.. in the bathrooms. Large quiet garden in the hotel and a garage right next door to the hotel. Very close to the market and the port and very friendly staff.

« Good hotel good location »

Recently renovated, nice clean hotel. Short walk to port, and attractions. Good breakfast was included with rooms. The staff was very helpful and attentive to our needs. The lights in the hallways go out ( to save energy) - that was weird at first!

« Elegant 3 star hotel but looks 2 stars more, with beautiful garden (limited disabled access) »

I stayed at here overnight on Saturday 10 June 2017 in a traditional room and loved it. I chose the hotel because of its reviews and it deserves its reputation. The hotel is in the centre of historic La Rochelle, in a quiet side street, close to Place de Verdun, where there is a small bus station and is a 10 minute level walk to the port. I took a pre-booked taxi from the airport which cost about 18 - 20 euros. Within a 5 minute walk there are shops, cafes and restaurants. The hotel is historic and very elegant. The main entrance has 4 steps with a handrail to the front door, regrettably it's not wheelchair accessible, I have a mobility disability and walk with a crutch and the stairs were doable and once inside there is a lift to the other floors. I stayed in a traditional room which was huge and beautifully decorated. The room was very clean, tidy and well maintained. There was a comfortable double bed and traditional furniture. A flat screen TV, which I didn't really use, I think it had the BBC News channel. There was a large wardrobe with a electronic safe inside (no additional charge for the safe). There was free wifi which worked well. The en suit bathroom had a walk in shower, sink and toilet. I had contacted the hotel before I arrived and changed my booking as the rooms overlooking the garden had baths rather than showers. I think for most people the walk in shower would be great but as I have a mobility disability I found the shower's flooring too slippery, if the hotel refurbish their bathrooms in the future I hope they consider installing some wet rooms with non slip flooring, as this would assist people with mobility difficulties. My room overlooked a quiet residential street and there were shutters as well as curtains at the windows. The hotel has the wow factor. The reception and communal areas are breath takingly impressive. There's a dramatic staircase and the bar, lounge and breakfast room are extremely elegant. The garden is a big plus, quite large, beautifully maintained and after a hot, busy morning exploring La Rochelle's busy port area it was a such a delight to sit in a shaded area with a drink in the tranquillity of the garden, listening to the bird songs. The hotel serve breakfast at an additional cost, about 12 euros, there's a choice of hot and cold drinks, pastries, fruit, yogurt and eggs. Food is frequently replenished and its self service. If the weather permits try to get a table in the garden. The reception staff were amazingly helpful, friendly and spoke good English. It's a beautiful, well managed hotel, if you're looking for somewhere special to stay in La Rochelle I'd highly recommend it. I wished I had been able to stay longer and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

    « Lovely traditional hotel »

The staff here are helpful and professional. We stayed in Room 14 for 3 nights which is premier room and has a large black marbled bathroom. The room is huge, high ceilings, and has wonderful huge double windows opening on to the garden view. We were woken by birds singing in the garden trees which was delightful. The room stayed cool throughout the day as it faces north - it was really hot outside but surprisingly cool inside. There is a problem with the floor in the room above ( which is rm 34) - you can hear the people walking about to such an extent that the chandelier wobbles in Room 14! I guess this can be a problem in older buildings. The wifi works well. The parking is next door up a narrow ramp into a covered hanger area. The spaces are tight, but it's cool in there for the car. You can walk into the historic district and shops, old port etc in 5-10 mins. There is tea and coffee in the room, and a tiny fridge, and mini bar. We loved the breakfast and sat outside in the garden. There was sometimes an issue with tables being left uncleared, and items that had run out were slow to be replaced. There were staff about - they looked busy. There was bacon, scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, fruits meats cheeses yoghurts etc and many cakes pastries cereals and breads. The coffee machine works really well and the coffee was superb for machine coffee. We would definitely stay here again , but go for a top floor room so your ceiling doesn't shake with footsteps ! For a fabulous day trip, walk down to the old port and take a one hour boat trip to the Isle de Aix - we loved this unspoilt and beautiful island. Walked all over and enjoyed the empty beaches. Had a wonderful seafood lunch over there.

« Fabulous hotel would fully recommend »

Absolutely superb hotel, well positioned to visit markets, the port, parks etc. Excellent staff who are so pleasant and willing, rooms are exceptional try room 34. The gardens are beautiful the hotel is quiet and spotlessly clean, as someone else wrote The Best Best Western sums Le Champlain up perfectly. Garage parking is available adjacent to hotel if required, and a large public car park is close by at Place Verdun. We stayed here three nights while touring France and had the most comfortable and quiet stay for some time would highly recommend.

« Excellent choice for La Rochelle »

We stayed for a week at the Champlain. I really liked this hotel. The main room was large, as was the bathroom. There is a mini bar, a desk, a couple of armchairs, a coffee table and a wardrobe in the room. Wifi worked perfectly (you had to get a separate code for each device) and was free. The location was great - a block away from a big town square and a short walk to the Old Port (where there are tons of restaurants). The hotel is mainly on a small quiet street (some of the rooms may be closer to a busier street). I did have breakfast once, but they didn't really have the foods I like to eat. It is easy to pop over to one of the many stores close by to get a different kind of breakfast. The people at the front desk were really helpful and nice. My favorite part about this hotel is that there is a beautiful garden in the back where you can have a drink from the bar or just relax with a book. It is quiet and lovely. There is parking next door although being from the US, I wasn't used to the tiny spaces and narrow corners. I managed to make it in and out several times without a ding though.I believe the cost is about 8 or 9 euros per day. You can pull up right in front of the hotel to manage your bags. Also, being from the US with subpar French skills, it may be good to know that most of the staff speaks English well. I really enjoyed my stay in La Rochelle and if I come back, I will definitely stay at the Champlain again.

« Clean, comfortable and convenient »

It's a Best Western but it is a good one. A warm welcome, convenient parking and a large comfortable room. 10 mins easy walk to the old harbour where there are bars and restaurants galore. Safe choice but a bit bland.

    « Pleasant »

This is a nice enough 3 star hotel conveniently located close to the city. It is in a historic setting and is partly historic itself. The staff are pleasant too, but little else takes it above an 'average' ranking. Breakfast looked sparse, but everything was filled up if you waited. No curtains in our superior room, and minimal toiletries, and no way to get a little air without the window being fully open. And quite expensive too.

    « Pleasant Surprise »

I prefer small, local hotels near the center of town when visiting French cities. So, looking at maps, I was a bit concerned about the BW Champlain. I'm happy to say my misgivings were unfounded. The hotel is an easy walking distance to La Rochelle's harbor area. Our room was large, with a high ceiling, overlooked a small garden, and was quite comfortable. Staff were very nice and helpful with questions we had. We would certainly stay there again the next time we visit La Rochelle. One warning: The hotel does have enclosed parking right next door. It's up a ramp overlooking a repair shop. To get back to ground level, you have to navigate a fairly narrow, steep staircase. So you need to be sure you leave your luggage at the hotel before parking your car, and if you have any mobility issues, this parking arrangement might be a problem.

« The Best 'Best Western' I've stayed in »

What a wonderful piece of property this chain hotel has. It's so nice, it feels more like a boutique hotel. The old villa/chateau adds a special atmosphere to a stay here. Beautiful old building, garden area out back, some period furniture & rooms. The location for us was great. It's on the edge of the city, so pretty easy to access. We parked in their garage next door - not large, so make sure you reserve a spot. It's about a 10 minute walk along a nice shopping street to the old port, or through a lovely city park. Plenty of shops and restaurants around. Easy to explore every area of the old city. Our corner room seemed recently renovated and was located in the 'newer' section. It was large, surprisingly quiet, nicely decorated and very clean. It had a large bathroom, w/ good water pressure. Large comfortable bed. The wifi was only pretty good - once you finally got it logged on (you need a special code for each device). We didn't try breakfast, so can't comment on that. Rooms were cleaned early in the day. One lady at the desk spoke pretty good English, one did not, but both were very pleasant to deal with. We stayed in February and also had a great room rate. It's hard to imagine there is a better place to stay in La Rochelle that also has this much character.

« Felt like we were in a chateau »

Our friends booked this hotel when they drove us to La Rochelle. The suite was luxurious and we felt we were reliving the splendor of staying in a chateau. The receptionist was very helpful and courteous. We did not feel like a big dinner and she served us our order of champagne and charcuterie in a salon downstairs, all decorated in period furnishings. Although breakfast was not included in the price, we were not charged for it when we changed our minds and had it after we settled the bill for all of us. (Perhaps because our friends are frequent visitors there).

« Nice but not quite there »

We went to La Rochelle for a romantic trip and decide to book a nice hotel. The hotel is pretty inside but you see that it is suffering from past grandeur. For instance our bathroom was pretty but the enamel in the sink was scratched heavily in some places, some tiles in the showers looked displaced, the shower was a bit old. The breakfast was ok but little things were missing or were not replenished (and we had breakfast at 9am). All in all, a little bit on the expensive side for what you get.

« Top Place, great location in the town, great rooms, firm and comfy beds. My second stay, not my last. »

We visited as a group of chaps to watch the rugby December 2016. Rooms are comfy, spacious, well decorated and the beds are firm but nice. bathrooms lovely. Everything clean. The location is spot on, close to old town, 5 minutes walk to port. The staff are friendly and courteous, not to mention helpful. Didn't eat breakfast as there are so many lovely bakeries and cafes close by. I will stay here again, and again. perhaps should be 4 stars.

    « delightful hotel »

great location, though a tad difficult to find due to the one way systems in la rochelle , great parking, lovely room and polite and helpful staff. we were given a garden view room which has views over the lovely grounds, we would absolutely book again highly recommended

« Lovely hotel in super location »

We stayed at the hotel for two nights, and enjoyed the stay. The front desk staff were efficient and friendly, and the rooms were lovely. We appreciated the in-room coffee, the comfortable bed, the high ceilings, and the room overlooking the garden. The staff were helpful in providing advice about La Rochelle, in giving directions, and in making dinner reservations. Only one thing, the internet went out the first evening we were there and stayed off for 12+ hours (one of the reasons we stayed at the places we did during our travels was because of stable internet, due to a family medical issue). When we checked at the front desk, the individual there had no idea the internet was down, instead giving us a new access code (which obviously didn't work). We checked several times, and the explanation was the same, we must be entering the code incorrectly. The next morning we realized others had sought an explanation for the outage as well, so please make sure the front desk staff are aware when the internet is out, and that there is signage to indicate this to guests. That allows for other communication decisions if required.

    « Great location »

We stayed for three nights; the room was comfortable with a nice modern bathroom. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and varied - you could also take it in the garden if you wished. The hotel provides parking in the garage next door for 8 euros a night and we found this reasonable. The reception staff during the day were friendly and very helpful. It was a little difficult to get a drink from the bar at night. We had a lovely stay.

« Great little hotel within walking distance of La Rochelle centre »

We stayed in Hotel Champlain in sept 2016 for 2 nights and found it to be very comfortable if basic. I wouldn't normally recommend a best western having had some awful experiences previously, but this place is fine and good value for money. Parking is available but you need to book in advance and they have bike storage as well. The other plus is the fact that you can walk into the town centre, safely, in about 10 mins. Breakfast is ok, nothing special and the rooms are clean and comfortable, with shutters on the windows so you can sleep undisturbed. The décor is a little faded, but I would still revisit if going to La Rochelle again.

    « Lovely »

Only stayed for one night, but was very impressed with this hotel, very welcoming staff, a basket of pastries in the middle of the foyer, which I couldn't resist, our room was huge, the bed enormous and very comfy, shower room clean , shower doors a bit of a challenge, but all ok. Breakfast was good, boiling your own eggs was interesting, one tip, make sure its turned up before you put the eggs in, but all in all, a lovely hotel, and I would recommend it . Oh and its also very handy for seeing the sites, and shopping.

    « Comfortable and central »

We often stay in this hotel, as it provides everything we are looking for. Very central so we can walk into La Rochelle city center, a garage nearby for the car, and nice surroundings for a relaxing walk. The room (suite), was comfortable, large bathroom, bath robes & slippers. Breakfast is correct for a reasonable 12€, only little time consuming to fill a large tea pot for 2 with hot water at the coffee machine. Given the number of tea drinkers, could you improve this? Charming hotel with character, and friendly staff at reception.

« charming and gréât value »

we just spent 2 nights in this lovely hôtel. The room , which was thé last one available when I called yesterday is on thé ground floor. It is very modern, bright and comfortable. It was also very quiet with double paned windows. The public rooms are very élégant as this is a renovated 17th centuy townhome. A full breakfast is served in thé lovely breakfast room or garden but we opted to have breakfast in bed for about thé same price (13E). The room was only 100E/night. Lovely and just steps away from thé shopping arcades and 10 minute walk from thé old port. Perfect location and price.

    « Our third stay. »

We really do like this hotel which is clean comfortable and attractive and really very good value for money. And we shall stay here again. But just a word to those in charge.... The breakfasts are generous and there is a lot of choice, but on the three mornings that we ate there, they ran out of lots of things and we had to wait for orange juice, for more croissants to be cooked and for a place at the coffee machine. It all seemed rather a scrum. There was fresh melon in a bowl but in the chiller cabinet the sliced cheese on plates were dry and curling and the fruit salad had definitely seen better days!! Despite this we had a lovely time and if les responsables could address the breakfast problems, it would be great.

    « Classic, Clean & Convenient »

This is perhaps the best Best Western we have stayed. It is centrally located - a short walk to the left to the city market; straight to the Old Port; and around the corner the transportation center. It is at the corner of a couple of streets, but very quiet inside even for the rooms facing the street. The rooms are tastefully decorated and comfortably furnished. The air conditioning is so quite that you don't hear it at all. The wifi keeps you logged-in and keeps working as you needed. There is also a private garden in the back of the hotel that is surrounded by tall walls. The breakfast has a variety of food including Salami etc.. You may order cooked eggs should you prefer that. The hotel also has private parking at next door for €8/day, though street parking may also be available for half of the price. If we come back to La Rochelle, we would definitely stay here again.

« Good location well run property »

This hotel has great character, a converted convent in the old style.Located a short walk from main shopping and restaurant districts.Room very spacious and comfortable. Staff very friendly. Closeby hotel we found a very good restaurant ( recommended by hotel).Other good restaurants in port area L'entracte and La Suite.

    « A gem »

There is something about the fabric and fittings of this old convent and its charming walled garden which seems to endow the guests with the quietude of the souls long gone. Being in the centre of the fascinating old town of La Rochelle, the effective but silent air-conditioning and the hotel`s adjacent, secure covered car park makes it a nearly unique and superb place to stay. And the breakfast are good, too. A gem.

« A little piece of heaven in La Rochelle! »

We were so lucky to book the last room in the Champlain. It made our stay in La Rochelle very special. We were in the old part of the hotel (Room 11 on the first floor). It was once an elegant old house and still has a lovely, spacious garden with a terrace where we had breakfast each morning (simple but very good). It was also a good spot for an afternoon rest or for reading when the heat built up. Our room was very spacious with period furniture and a very comfortable bed and the quietest air conditioning! The bathroom was a delight - big and airy and bright with his and hers sinks, bidet and an excellent shower. There were several sitting rooms and bar too. And the Wi-Fi was also excellent. The staff were lovely - pleasant and helpful at all times. The hotel is located in a quiet street and just 8-10 minutes takes you via the cloistered shopping area down to the port - ideal location. We would both highly recommend it.

« Splendid old building and gardens »

Very friendly staff. The old part of the hotel is magnificent and the garden a hidden gem. Hotel is ideally located away from the cloud of the harbour in a quiet location by within very easy walking distance from the centre. Our room on the ground floor was situated in the modern part if the hotel, sadly not as beautiful as the historical part. It was small and near the breakfast area so we could hear noises from the breakfast room (without being outrageously loud). Attempts to modernise the decor has been made not really enough to my taste. Shower Room / toilets had not ventilation and as a result a giant scented spray had been left in there for guests... The air conditioning in the bedroom however was brilliant, efficient and very quiet. Breakfast was disappointing too as fairly standard no cooked food and unsurprising, but there was enough variety for a decent meal. Hotel charges €8 per day for their next door gated and covered car park. Your choice but parking in the street would cost half that. Overall some good some bad but not a terrible experience by any mean and we had a nice stay in this beautiful city.

    « Beautiful charming hotel »

This hotel was perfectly located in a quiet road away frrom the main shopping, bars and restaurant area. It has a beautiful garden oasis with sun chairs for a quiet place to to read your book and have a drink. We stayed in room 19 a beautiful room with a beautiful big bed but not very comfortable a lot of aches and pains. Other than that the hotel was perfect Amd the staff very helpful and friendly.

    « Charming hotel »

We stayed in this lovely hotel overnight en route to the south. It was perfectly placed for us - being just 10 minutes walk to the bustling port with its bars and restaurants but set in a quiet road. They welcomed our labradoodle (although not in the restaurant - which was fine because we walked to an open air restaurant in the port for breakfast and had a lovely one). Our room was very elegant with a large bathroom. There is a nice seating area set within a pretty garden to the rear. The receptionist was very helpful giving us local information, maps etc. Drinks as you would expect in a hotel are a bit pricier than outside €6.80 for a G & T ( but not extortionate!) would definitely stay here again.

    « Silent! »

Very comfy beds, and amazingly silent aircon.... Good friendly service and located away from main roads, but close enough to the centre to walk for dinner. Old decor, but clean and good. Lots of local restaurants to choose from, and Ile de re close by for sand and more restaurants.... Ideal !

    « Absolutely fabulous, perfect! »

This Hotel was perfect, the staff were excellent and so helpful, the room was beautiful and the garden was an oasis to relax in. We couldn't fault it. We would highly recommend it for business or pleasure. It is ideally situated and very good value. Don't underestimate it's architecture and grandeur. It's a delight.

    « Highly Recommend »

Stayed for 10 nights with my wife August 2016.Set 10 minutes walk from the port and 2 minutes from bus depo so location is very good. The hotel rooms have a mini bar and are cleaned to a high standard daily.Did'nt have breakfast lots of variety near by,lovely garden with plenty of sun loungers.Staff very friendly and extremely helpful.

    « perfect location »

Ideal location for visiting la rochelle. The garden looked lovely although we didnt actually go in it as were too busy out and about. Short walk from everything. They offer parking next door for 8euro a night which seemed reasonable. I wouldnt advise paying for the breakfast, there are too many lovely cafes a stones through away but all in all a great hotel.

    « Perfectly lovely »

I can see why this hotel is so popular. First impressions are very deceptive. This is a beautiful and historic hotel. The staff could not have been more warm, friendly and helpful. They work really hard to ensure a pleasant stay. Our room overlooked the street at the front but there was no noise because of the good double glazing. The air conditioning kept the room cool and comfortable at night. The room was immaculately made up each day and the bed was huge and comfortable. The lounge, bar and halls were decorated with attractive artwork and antiques. The garden was laid out with with well tended flower beds and a range of seating in the sun or shade. The breakfast was a self service buffet. The staff worked hard to replenish breads, hot water and other items as needed. You could ask for cooked eggs and freshly squeezed orange juice. The harbour was a little further than we had expected - about ten minutes through ancient arcaded streets and a square with a traditional carousel. There are lots of excellent restaurants and shops nearby. There was a car park next to the hotel (€8 per night) payable at the end of our stay. A beautiful and friendly place to stay.

    « Lovely »

Wow - this hotel met and exceeded our expectations. Prestige room was lovely - old furniture, two traditional french windows overlooking the garden, large bathroom with brilliant shower and robes and slippers and bath and his and hers sinks, comfortable bed, tea making facilities with gorgeous china tea cups, mini-fridge etc. The generous size of the room was a real treat - we loved it. The over all decor of the hotel was a rather grand style of slightly shabby chic with some mis-matched more modern pieces thrown in but the overall effect was lovely in this spacious townhouse hotel. The peaceful little garden was a nice touch for a mid-afternoon sit in the sun between sightseeing and dinner. All staff we met were friendly and helpful. We didn't have the breakfasts so cant comment but everything else was great and very good value for the price. Good central location so we could walk round the old town and port easily and lots of places nearby for breakfast, lunch, dinner etc.

« Perfect location, bright airy rooms and excellent value breakfast! »

We had booked into a close by 5 star hotel during the recent heatwave. On discovering they did not have air con we quickly changed to The Hotel Champlain. Great air con in the rooms here ensure a good nights sleep in summer heat. Breakfast is fantastic value! 12 euro per head and with a choice of meats, fresh pastries and bread, cheese, yoghurt and eggs cooked to your choosing, it is a great value way to start the day! You can bring it out and sit in the quiet gardens to the rear of the hotel. Perfect! The hotel is centrally located and at the top of the street that opens on to the daily fresh market situated only 5-10 minute stroll away. This traditional French hotel was a great find and we would highly recommend to families and couples alike. Such good value. ?? Tip! - for an extra 1 euro you can have your breakfast served in your room. Amazing value, top marks, we will be back!!

    « Very nice hotel »

Charming hotel with friendly staff in a great location (5 min walk to downtown, 10 min to reach the old port). Breakfast was very good, with fresh and quality products. Good value for money. Defintely an address to recommend.

A really nice hotel with elegant rooms and great facilities. Breakfast was very good with a varied selection. The location is ideal with on site packing available and the waterfront just a short walk away. Would definitely stay here again.

    « Excellent... »

Lovely French charm and wonderful staff, nothing was too much trouble, I do wish there were more people like this in hotels around the world. We stayed for 2 nights as part of a French Harley D tour. Great covered parking next door, and very safe. Breakfast was great, and although we chose to have evening meals in town, I am sure they would have been good too. Nice central location at the top of the Main Street, but this meant a pleasurable walk into the harbour seeing things you may have missed staying in the harbour itself. Don't be put off by the terrible reputation Best Westerns have in the UK as a tired chain with miserable staff, this is very different, I would not be at all surprised to learn that The Champlain was privately owned and operated under license... Definitely of the revisit list.. Thank you for a great stay.

« Perfect Location, Beautiful Hotel. »

Stayed here for two nights in late July. Price was reasonable for the time of Year. Hotel location is about 10 mins walk for the port. Car Parking is available in a secure car garage next door for 8 euros per day, No troubles with access in late hours. Rooms are a good size, we choose the standard room with a view of the gardens. Excellent A/C. Clean Comfy bed and good power shower. Breakfast is an extra 12 Euros, NOT worth it, pathetic choice breakfast, runs out fast. Staff are very friendly and approachable, they even wished me a Happy Birthday. Overall, would 100% stay again on our next visit.

    « Amazing Location »

Situated in the city centre, within minutes walk of the Vieux Port, the park and just off the main bus area, yet delightfully quiet, with a beautiful garden and helpful staff. We were there during a very hot spell and it was great to have the garden to sit in during the evening. The air conditioning was very effective, the secure garage was next door and the breakfast excellent.

« Beautiful hotel, great rooms and excellent location »

This hotel is beautiful and in a great location - only 5 minutes walk from the old port and the food market. The rooms were really clean and the overall atmosphere is relaxed. We really enjoyed our stay although wish it had been for longer.

« Great Hotel poor service »

While touring around France on our bike we decided to slip down to La Rochelle. We looked at hotels in the area and decided this looked like a nice one. When we arrived it was easy to find nicely located and the room was lovely. Wanting to use the Internet we tried to log on using the code we where given. It didn't work so we asked for another and this only let us log on with one phone. When I asked the night Porter why this was we where told we could only have one code and that was all we where allowed. I pointed out that this was not what was advertised but he just shrugged his shoulders and wondered off. The room was advertised that it had English channels and with the incident that happened in Normandy we tried to find the news channel shown on the poster in the room. It was nowhere to be found on the channels we had been told to use do again I asked the Porter who had a look on the TV he was watching. He could not find it and again just shrugged his shoulders and gave up. When I pointed this out to the day time manager they said we had booked through great Western hotels and it was not an issue they could take on. Of all the hotels we used in France this was the nicest looking with a don't give a dame attitude from the staff running it. As far as they where concerned it was a SEP (somebody else's problem). This was so different to all the other hotels we stayed in where they could not do enough to make your stay pleasant and comfortable, and where considerably cheaper.

    « Beautiful classic hotel »

We had a very nice stay at Hotel Champlain back in April. We stayed in one of the suites at the top of the grand staircase (two adjoining rooms) which were decorated in a beautiful classic French style. The bathroom was gorgeous and modern. There was a good range of choices for breakfast and all of the staff were very helpful and pleasant. Parking next door in the garage was a bit of an adventure but we were grateful for the space so close to the hotel! Thank you for a lovely stay.

« Excellent hotel to visit La Rochelle and the Ile de Ray »

A little hard to find using Sat Nav due to the one-way strest sytem, but worth it when you arrive. Nice, comfortable hotel with wi-fi and a great breakfast. Quiet part of town, but within easy reach of the old town and restaurant. The reception staff were helpful. Strongly advised to book parking in advance.

« Great Hotel within a short walk to the Harbour. »

We booked three nights at this Best Western Hotel on our way back from the Dordogne to spend some time in La Rochelle which is such a delightful city and to visit the surrounding area which has so much to offer the visitor. We stayed in room 11 which was a room overlooking the front of the Hotel. The room was very spacious as was the bathroom, everything was very clean and tidy and there was coffee and tea making facilities in the room along with a mini bar although this didn't seem to be working very well as it was not cold. The staff at the Hotel were extremely helpful and spoke English which helped with my French. The very nice Lady on reception was able to recommend restaurants that we were looking for to sample in particular the local fish and Oysters. This Hotel is positioned only a five to ten minute walk away from La Rochelle's wonderful harbour which has a vast number of restaurants to suit all types of peoples love of food and the money in their wallet. We were extremely pleased with our stay in this Hotel and would not hesitate to return.

    « Beautiful hotel »

We stayed two nights in this beautiful hotel in the historic centre of La Rochelle. The location and facilities are superb. The receptionist was very welcoming. The air conditioning and wifi in our room worked brilliantly. We would highly recommend this hotel and plan to visit again.

« Lovely garden in central La Rochelle »

Stayed six nights in early July, having booked on the strength of tripadvisor reviews. We booked a large, garden view room and were allocated room no. 22. The room was large with old fashioned furniture and good size bathroom. We slept with the windows open and apart from one night when staff turned on the garden lights and walked back and forth on the gravel (???), it was fairly quiet. The room also had two good size windows facing the garden. Our car was parked on a near by road and it cost app.€5 per day to keep it there. La Rochelle is not a big place and the hotel's location was very good both for accessing the man roads and the town centre. We were left very much alone by staff, who were friendly, but far from intrusive. The bar area downstairs was always empty and the garden area was never busy. All in all a tranquil stay and the reason for giving it 4 rather than 5 points is that the linen could have been of a finer quality. The sheet felt s little coarse whereas many other 3star hotels I have stayed in have much better quality linens. A good solid hotel but lacking a wow factor.

« Good hotel, with secure parking »

Just a 5 minute walk to the vieux port, nice clean hotel , room is large enough, bathroom a bit small, but good shower Very good beds, but the reason I chose this hotel is the secure parking next door. I didn't give full points because I could hear next door's tv at 7 am

    « A birthday treat. »

We decided to drive from our French house in La Vienne and spend a night in La Rochelle to celebrate my birthday. We booked the Hotel Champlain after reading several positive reviews on TripAdvisor. Upon arrival we were greeted very warmly by the lady in Reception. We were soon in our allocated room which was very clean and had a small but well appointed en suite bathroom only somewhat spoilt by a badly chipped wash hand basin. The courtyard garden is superb and the decor in the older part of the hotel is very impressive. In the morning we ate our breakfast in one of the beautifully decorated and furnished lounges overlooking the garden as the breakfast room was packed. Access to the old town and the port area is easy and having a car parking facility next door is a real bonus.

« We would stay here again. »

We enjoyed a wonderful stay here. The staff were friendly & helpful & the breakfast just right, especially as we could take it in the garden most days. The room was clean & comfortable with a large bathroom. We loved to relax in the garden after a day of sightseeing. The roses were amazing. Would definitely stay there again. If coming by car, ensure that you have your route planned beforehand. La Rochelle has many small streets & one way systems.

« Welcoming Hotel in La Rochelle »

A very convenient hotel in La Rochelle, the secure garage next door is a good asset, even though the cost is Euro 8. We were pleased with our stay, and the staff were very welcoming. We took a traditional room at extra cost, and this was very pleasing and quiet overlooking the garden on the second floor. We went to the vegetable market on Sunday morning and this was excellent, and only a short walk from the hotel in the center of the city. Once again a good choice influenced by TA.

« The jewel in the crown of La Rochelle »

The reception rooms of this charming hotel are certain to full fill every Franco File's dream. It has impressive gilt mirrors, marble staircase and glittering chandeliers throughout these intimate spaces. In a town that has many colonaded streets but few treed avenues, the hotel's pretty walled courtyard garden offers a respite from the bustle of tourists. For those visitors who would like to enjoy an evening of French comédie, there is a small Théâtre d'Humour next door which is well worth a visit. The service at reception was very obliging and unfailingly charming. We would happily stay there again.

« Thank you Trip Advisor! And a suggestion... »

It's the Wandering Yank here. Mrs. Yank and I stayed here 2 nights , thanks to the excellent reviews we read in TA. It was great! First of all, it's not a modern place. It's old, in great shape, and it has a wonderful early 20th-century feel. The room was comfortable and the bathroom was relatively spacious. The garden was very peaceful and pleasant. There's a reading room. Breakfast was excellent. And most of all, the staff really seemed happy that we were there (not a universal characteristic of French hotel staffs I'm afraid). Plus it's walking distance from all of the sights and shopping in the old city. Parking is available next door, I think it was 8 euros a day. And my suggestion: try the Le Saveur-Vivre fine dining restaurant next door (see my review). Excellent!!! 2 enthusiastic thumbs up!

    « Such a very pleasant stay. »

For the second time, we really enjoyed staying here. The room was attractive and comfortable, with good linen, very well sound proofed and air conditioned. So we slept really well. The hotel is central and we were able to walk everywhere, with the car stowed away in the parking next door. The breakfasts were generous and fresh, with lots of choice. In terms of quality for the price, it couldn't have been bettered. We had a small ground floor room opening onto the lovely garden. But what really makes a stay here so special is the welcome and help from all the lovely staff. Merci a tous et a la prochaine!!!

« Old world style in a nice seaside town. »

We stayed here on April 21 for one night. One way streets make access a little tricky but not really a big issue. Parking at 8 euro is in the garage next door. Apparently you should book that. We hadn't but we were given access anyway with a little lecture by the receptionist about reading the booking notes we were sent. She spoke excellent English. We were in a room overlooking the back garden next to the lift but noticed no lift noise during the night. The room was comfortable and clean, the bed a King and comfortable although in reviewing our diary we both had disturbed sleep. Don't believe this was a hotel issue but did hear some traffic noises when awake possibly from the main road into La Rochelle which is nearby. We did have some trouble accessing the wifi. I had to go down to reception twice to try and resolve it. In the evening when the receptionist is gone the night staff do not speak English so it was a bit difficult trying to resolve the issue. They have a very strange system of printing out different passwords on a machine. Eventually on the third try I got a password that worked. I must say I started to get a bit frustrated with it. The hotel is an easy walk to restaurants and the harbour. They were very happy to provide recommendations where to eat and provide maps to the harbour etc. Breakfast at 12 euro is reasonable with a good selection and omelettes and other egg dishes made on request. The breakfast room is bright and on a nice summers day the garden would offer a nice breakfast alternative. If you didn't want to pay 12 e there are nearby restaurants but you would do no better. Overall this is a very good hotel. I was disappointed with the unwieldy wifi process but when connected it was fast and efficient. We are happy to recommend this hotel to fellow travellers. I have read past reviews and believe the ratings that are critical are a bit over the top in finding fault.

« A good base to visit a lovely City »

We booked this hotel after looking at TA on the morning of arrival. We found the hotel easily enough and it had the benefit on off street parking next door. The staff were very helpful and we managed to check in early, the room was clean but if you were into cat swinging this was not the room for you but admittedly we did choose the cheapest room rate. All in all a good City hotel close to attractions and not expensive though might try a better room next time

    « Location and parking »

Helpful and friendly staff. Our superior bedroom a good size and traditionally French in style. Breakfast good value. Public rooms impressively furnished with antiques. Good location nearby Cathedral and short distance to harbour. Parking (which is a real plus) needs to be booked.

    « Hidden Gem »

A lovely hotel with fabulous helpful staff. Lovely quite grounds with great views. The food and wine great. Breakfast good and plentiful. We will stay at this hotel again as It's very well positioned for South West France travel.

« The best hotel in France »

We stay here two or three times a year, it is lovely. The staff can't do enough for you, the rooms are well designed and very comfortable. Great garden and it is very well placed in La Rochelle, as it is only 10 minutes to the old port and the old town.

« Disappointing after first visit but have learned something! »

We booked a second time after believing we'd made a real 'find' but were disappointed as this time we were not overlooking the garden (as before) but the street. We had requested s quiet room. As the hotel had not yet switched its heating system to air conditioning we had no way of cooling s very warm stuffy room unless we opened the windows. The result being our room was not quiet at all. So not enough sleep was had. Apart from that the hotel was the same - good breakfast, comfy bed, helpful staff, convenient secure parking , good position We just should have asked for a garden room.

« Not worth it at all! »

I was attracted by the nice pictures. Don't do my mistake! The room is a weird mix between modern and old, not well cleaned. The view of the room was on a terrible ruined house and the bed was totally uncomfortable. This was not worth it the big price. Never to go back!

    « A terrific choice »

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hotel Champlain. The staff are terrific, very helpful, friendly and efficient. Our bedroom was really spacious and comfortable, very good lighting, with a view overlooking the garden and our bathroom was equally well designed and thoughtfully equipped. Wifi access - very good reception and speed. The breakfast is nicely done. Euros 12. But part of the fun for us is finding places outside the accommodation. La Rochelle is packed with delightful cafés for breakfast, so we tried a few of those as well. The hotel oozes charm, so we quickly relaxed. Our car was parked in the private parking facilities next door to the hotel. Whilst our room was available after 3pm, the hotel was perfectly happy for us to arrive in the morning and park the car in the secure parking. the same arrangement applied the day we left. We could load the car, leave it park and then leave whenever we wanted during the day. The hotel is very fairly priced for the quality and the comfort. The room was thoroughly serviced every day. Hotel Champlain is The Hotel is ideally positioned to explore the town. A five minute walk to the centre of the town and 10 mins to the port. Easy walking as well, through covered walkways. A really delightful experience. Wouldn't think about going anywhere else for our next visit. Highly recommended.

    « Disappointing »

This was our second visit. Our room this time was a disappointment. It was dated and in need of updating. The staff were friendly as on our first visit. We were disappointed. We will jot be visiting again. The hotel needs an upgrade but it has a fantastic old world charm.

« Tranquil and elegant home from home »

We had a room in the old (but very well renovated) part of the hotel, with high ceilings, garden views, and a completely modern and well-fitted bathroom. Also a sitting room attached. Many of the rooms are in the modern wing of the hotel - we stayed in the older part, which was decorated with elegant drapes/swags and 19th century chairs, beautifully recovered. It wasn't expensive. Breakfast was extra - at 12euros/head, it comprised pastries etc, along with fruit salad, yoghourt, cold cuts, and a choice of egg dishes to order, plus excellent latte/espresso/noisette/hot chocolate machines for self-service. This was a very good value breakfast and was taken in a massive dining room with garden views. I sat there with coffee and a laptop for a couple of hours very happily. A key to our enjoyment: our car was sick, and a potential cause of delay. The very helpful staff (everyone was nice here) said it was no problem for us to extend our stay, and this took away all the stress. Hotels usually don't decrease stress levels; this one did and I am most grateful. Beautiful park for walks nearby. Harbour a ten-minute walk away, and the restaurant Le Savoir-Vivre is adjacent to the hotel (but not part of it), serving lunch and dinner from tuesday to saturday (through 10pm). I expect the hotel would make a reservation there if requested, and the tel. # for the restaurant is: 05 46 52 28 27.

« One defect, which was more than solved »

It retains the old world style but has all the modern comforts. We stayed in room 34, a 'prestige chamber', which cost 140 Euros in April. It was large and beautifully furnished. You will need a free ticket to access the Wi Fi which was very fast at about 17 Meg. Marlene (not sure of spelling) was wonderfully welcoming and very helpful. Next-door is large private garage with a steep ramp up to the first floor. Not too difficult for a large car. It cost 8 Euros for the night. For breakfast there was a wide selection of items including an omelette if you wanted. I find that in French hotels you pay a lot of money for a simple continental breakfast which might include ham and cheese, but not egg, so this was a welcome change. When I reserved I told them it was my wife's birthday. At 7 pm they brought us a half bottle of good champagne with the compliments of the hotel -- a very nice touch. The minor defect was that the room was very cold and windy when we checked in. I closed the windows and tried to increase the temperature, but had little success. I phoned Marlene and she made some adjustments. It soon became comfortable. When I checked out the next day, I was given the breakfasts free of charge. I had not asked for any compensation, because the cold room was only temporary. It was a nice gesture which more than compensated for the minor inconvenience. The owners have been extra thoughtful and made everything as easy as possible for the guests, for example all the food has small signs in French and English, to help you choose. The sheet which describes the hotel services is on a single page, not in an expensive book with many pages to wade through.

    « Nice Hotel »

My wife and I stayed here for my birthday week-end, and were not disappointed.Great hotel, staff were very welcoming, and helpful, excellent service, nice clean room with garden outlook. Well positioned hotel in centre of La Rochelle. Within easy reach of great restaurants, shops, museums, harbour, market etc. Easy access and parking. Only one criticism, bed too firm for my liking, just goes to show you cannot please everyone. Thanks to all the staff at Champlain France Angleterre, La Rochelle for making my birthday such a memorable one.

« The best hotel I have found in La Rochelle »

I have traveled to La Rochelle a number of times on business and always tried to stay close to the port -- the allure being that most of the best restaurants are there. My hotel experiences in the area there had been very middling, however. The Hotel Angleterre is off of the Place Verdun, which is a short 10 minute walk from the port -- and well worth it. The rooms are enormous by French standards. The hotel is quiet. Service was impeccable. Highly recommended. Stop by the classically French Cafe de la paix and visit the Cathedral St. Louis (both on the square) while you're there.

« Just a lovely place to stay »

We were simply delighted with this lovely hotel. Excellent position, very good price/quality, gorgeous entrance hall and garden. Staff charming and helpful....what more do we want?! Rooms, depending on which category will be nice to very, very nice!

    « Elegant hotel »

Just off the main square in the heart of the city, this is a very attractive "country house" style hotel with a beautiful foyer furnished with elegant antiques. My double room on the first floor was charming and overlooked the lovely peaceful walled garden. It was clean and warm and as well as the bed had a desk, wardrobe and a minibar. The bathroom had a bath and shower and free toiletries. I didn't eat breakfast in the hotel so can't comment on the food. The staff speak great English. La Rochelle offers a rich historic maritime heritage but I found the dining around the hotel to be quite limited, the best restaurants all seemed to be down in the port area. However if I was passing through again I would definitely stay here again.

« Stay at this place, its all you need. If I had not been with friends, I would call it romantic. »

We stayed as a group of friends visiting to watch a sporting event, so it was for one night only. In a car, the place is a hard one to find due to one way systems. The sat nav couldn't cope. When we found it, the hotel paid us back in spades. It is listed as 3 stars. I don't profess to know how they award stars but it felt like more than 3. The building is an old one, in grand style, but terraced on either side. You are greeted by marble floors and columns, tall ceilings and spotless cleanliness. For all this, it still feels family run. If this makes sense to you, its square on the outside and round and interesting on the inside. The rooms were the same as hall. Tall ceilings, but with that old french furniture of marble and polished wood and ornate plaster work. For me, it felt lovely. From experience, I expected the beds to be worn and saggy, but they were firm, with crisp linen and all very clean. The narrow street it is on means its quiet outside at night whether you are at the front or the back. The owner also worked on reception and you could see that she was very proud of the place, bragging that her grandmother first turned it into a hotel and it has been in her family ever since. She was helpful at every turn and nothing was too much trouble for her. I only had coffee for breakfast but it looked simple and typically french. Croissant and bread with coffee and fruit. The dining area was attending by two elderly french ladies dressed impeccably in typical black maids outfits and eager to assist. As for location, its a 5-10 minute walk to the harbour, but that walk is along lovely streets with interesting independent shops and narrow streets. If you struggle to walk far, it might be too far, but in average health and its very convenient. I would not hesitate to go back here. It is a beautiful building run by wonderful people. To close, it was much cheaper in price than expected for the quality.

    « Business. »

Beautiful, Small Hotel 10 minutes from La Rochelle Harbour and many Cafe / Restaurants, 1 minute walk from Bus Station, 5 minute Taxi Ride to Train Station with connections to Major Cities including Paris. Lots of Great Shopping and Markets.

    « Nice! »

Good location, pleasant staff. Allocated room ( last minute through with street view was uninspiring, however having expressed our view to pleasant lady on check in desk she upgraded us to very nice room with garden views. We didn't have breakfast at hotel, so can't comment. No complaints at all about this well appointed Best Western Hotel.

    « Excellent Hotel »

Stayed here for 1 night. Well positioned hotel not far from the town and market. Warm welcome from staff and nice clean room was made available early. Parking next door was a bonus as were the hotel gardens. Thought the room might have been noisy as it was street-side but no problem at all. Overall a nice stay and would be happy to recommend on our experience.

    « Holiday stop over »

We have stayed at this hotel twice now. Each time a one night stop over while heading north to the tunnel. We plan on returning for a longer visit next time. The hotel is elegant with lovely spacious rooms a lovely breakfast which can be taken in the garden. The garden is beautiful. An oasis of calm with dun loungers and tables and chairs etc. the hotel is very central near a large car park and a short walk from the port and its many restaurants. The staff are lovely and the welcome has been first class on each visit. For a special treat ask for a room on the first floor overlooking the garden. These rooms are very spacious with huge bathrooms and massive beds which are incredibly comfortable.

« Well situated comfortable hotel »

Very nice hotel. Comfortable room and bed, clean and functional bathroom with reliable hot water supply. Very friendly helpful staff. Excellent garage parking next door. Tea and coffee facilities in room!! a first for us in France.

« Well Located and Comfortable Hotel »

The Champlain hotel is well located as a base to stay, in the heart of old La Rochelle, within easy walking distance from the harbour front; where there are many restaurants to choose from, within 10-15 mins. On Sunday's most restaurants in the side streets and near the old market square are closed, walking distance a good 5-10 mins. All of the staff are very helpful and friendly, some of which are bilingual There is an off-street car park for residents at 8 Euros, although you can park on the street on Sunday for free and up to 9am in the morning, there is also no charge between 12-2pm. It is possible on Sunday to arrive early afternoon and to park outside the hotel. We stayed in room 44 on the second floor at the rear of the hotel, very near to the lift, it was very quiet. The rooms overlooked an attractive garden at the rear which had garden furniture for visitors use. There is also a breakfast area in the garden which leads into the breakfast room. Buffet breakfast is more than ample, with plenty of choice and there is attention to detail, (cost 12 euros per adult) The room is attractively decorated and spacious with furniture positioned to separate the sleeping area from the 'lounge' area. The bed was very comfortable and was a king size plus. In a separate room was the bath/shower, wc and wash basin which was well laid out, although a little tired. There is no air conditioning The cost represents very good value for money and the hotel is highly recommended.

    « 2 day break as a couple »

This hotel is really lovely. It's decor it's beautiful & originial I believe. The garden is stunning with flowers & seating. The breakfast room is welcoming & good attention to detail. The staff on reception were very pleasant & helpful. The bedroom was for 2 of us. Was clean & fair amount of space. The shower & loo are separate which I preferred, could have done with fans for ventilation though. Outside our window was a used nappy, which no one moved as I believe the cleaner missed it !! Overall lovely stay & recommend for couples as its romantic & well located to the harbour & restaurants.

    « Happy return! »

It's possible to stay at a very good rate, through Brittany Ferries, at this smart and comfortable hotel just off the Place Verdun. Our second visit did not disappoint and we again appreciated having such an excellent base, well situated for reaching the many delights of la Rochelle - including the park (just turn right, cross road then left along paths) which leads beside canals and through trees to the sea front. The Museum of Natural History (turn left then left again until Museum is reached on right - 10 minutes max) - worth a visit and set in the Jardin des Plantes - just a delightful, varied garden in which to picnic or wander. The walk to les Minimes - 20 to 30 minutes - returning by Bus de Mer catamaran(3 euros each way) to the Vieux Port makes another good trip. The buffet breakfast is generous and can be eaten on the garden terrace on sunny summer mornings. Staff are unobtrusive but readily helpful when required.

« Enjoyable stay in Champlain hotel »

The Champlain hotel lived to our expectations. Situated in the heart of La Rochelle old district, around 10minutes walk from the harbour, it was a quiet haven after a busy day exploring the area. This hotel is in two parts as it was originally an old merchant house, Maison de Negociant, to which a modern part has been added. The old house still shows its affluencence in the "Empire salons" and grand staircase. The bedrooms in the new part are very comfortable, quiet with all expected amenities. The staff at the reception desk were extremely courteous and helpful. Parking was available in the adjacent garage for 8 euros per day. Sightseeing under the arcades, exploring the town was a pleasure with the added bonus that the hotel was situated a quiet area. We enjoyed our 3 nights stay and recommend this hotel to anyone visiting La Rochelle.

Lovely atmosphere of the Belle Epoque, beautiful entry with French Empire furnishings, consols with large vases of flowers, a curving elegant staircase, and parterre garden. The staff were all extremely friendly and welcoming, the breakfast was excellent. Within short distance to the waterfront and eating places but at a good distance from any noise - very quiet at night. Free covered security parking. Our room had the biggest bed I've ever seen and a lovely view over the garden. I would definitely stay here again.

« Best welcome! At Best Western. »

Stayed 2 nights - 1 before and once after flight to Brussels. Our welcome by the receptionist on 6th August was the best genuine welcome I have ever had in all my experience of travelling the world! Nothing flashy, no welcome cocktail but a really friendly, professional and welcoming greeting. Lovely hotel, delightful garden and very friendly professional staff. Enjoyed our stay. Will stay here again. Thanks

« Very average, very noisy, but close to the center. »

The staff is friendly, but the building is old-fashioned and much to noisy. Every door makes some noise, so you will be waked up when the clean-service begins !!! The parking you can reservate...

    « Tres bien »

Everything was really nice. A very nice old house, rooms with character but a very modern bathroom. Perfect visit. And a very nice and beautiful town. The location of the hotel, close to "la place de verdun" and a pretty short walk to the habour were just perfect. Thank you very much.

« Quiet, relaxed and unexpected »

A ten minute walk through the colonnades to the old port make this hotel a great place to explore La Rochelle from. It's quite and has a lovely garden where you can have cocktails, or breakfast! One of the better "Best Western" hotels we have stayed in.

    « great hotel - good location »

Hotel is in a nice area - 10 mins stroll to port and main tourist attractions. Very nice room with silent but very effective aircon. Staff really helpful and friendly. Don't forget to prebook car parking if needed.
