"Steamed to Perfection"

06/11/2018

A mixed review after my latest stay at the Dower House, staff in all areas were exceptional throughout the stay and cannot be praised enough. Food in the restaurant was excellent and the whole feel of the hotel was of simply a nice place to be. So far thats not so different from my previous experiences of this hotel. Where things change is in the quality of sleep in the room we were given which had a strange noise all through the night. After a very busy day i simply couldn't drag myself to reception to complain about what sounded like a small motorcycle running all night, but probably should have. When i mentioned the noise at reception they said they would look into it straight away but driving out of the car park the source of the noise was very apparent. My room was on the first floor and there was a large extractor or cooler on the ground floor directly under my room. Hopefully it was a repairable issue so that the next occupants of the room i had get decent sleep. Of particular note were the attendants in the spa that day ( 28 Oct 2018 ) who were excellent and made the spa experience incomparable. Final comment, would i stay there again... No question and probably quite soon.

"Friendly service, friendly staff rate this as 10/10"

This is a lovely hotel in the picturesque town of Knaresborough. The hotel is perfectly situated for access to the town centre, walks by the River Nidd and Mother Shiptons caves. The staff at this hotel were so accommodating - nothing was too much trouble for them. The food was of good quality and service excellent. Harrogate is close by together with access to the picturesque surrounding countryside. I

Superb food, Superb service, and Superb location for a stroll along the river after our excellent meal. The fact that the Chef Victoria Vasalto came to our table after the meal was a lovely touch. Thank you.

"Excellent friendly hotel"

04/11/2018

Stayed here in October for two nights and really liked the hotel. The location was close to the centre and only 5 mins away from the train station - very handy to get into York and far better than trying to park the car! We had a dog with us and so we stayed in a small "cottage" in the grounds, it consisted of a double bedroom, hall and excellent bathroom with a waterfall shower - lovely :) We didn't use any of the spa facilities due to us having the dog with us. Breakfast was excellent and we were waited on in the bar so that we didn't need to go into the restaurant with the dog, great friendly service, highly recommended.

"Enjoyable Dower House"

Really enjoyed our stay Excellent ground floor accommodation though the first floor bedroom needs attention Maybe that's next on their list The gym was a real bonus with all that you need for a good workout The evening meal was of a high standard and we received courteous and efficient service - thank you Rebecca for making us laugh There was a great choice at breakfast and hotels always get a ‘thumbs up' when I can order porridge!

"Dire Dower House"

14/10/2018

This Is the worst Hotel i have ever stayed in. If you are intending to stay do not stay in room 2. The room has a strange odour. The carpet is stained. The radiator is dirty. The paintwork is chipped. The shower enclosure is dirty infact I didn't even attempt a shower. My husband tried but the water was freezing cold. The toilet brush was filthy. You could hear the floorboards creaking from the room above. Infact this room needs a complete refurbishment. Get it done quickly before you get anymore bad reviews (I can see you have several) We paid £99 for this room and then we were charged £2 for parking. On the plus side the breakfast was lovely and the lady in charge that day was very pleasant and efficient. We didn't want to make a fuss at the time as we were part of a wedding party and didn't want to offend them.

"Disappointing"

14/10/2018

A very mixed experience. We had booked 2 rooms, one was a ground floor room but we were not told it was accessed from outside, not an issue if it is nice weather but not so funny in the rain and wind etc. At best we should have been told this was the case. On arrival the room, room one, was so hot and the heating didn't seem to be a working properly. The staff that were on did their best and were very pleasant but it took two days to get it sorted. The smell in the bathroom of this room was horrendous, stagnant water smell. We did bring it to the hotel's attention but nothing was done. The other room was a very pleasant ,clean room on first floor, room 14, but from the off I could have sworn there was a music feed into the room. I tried to source the noise, checked that next door didn't have tv on etc and eventually sussed it was the music from downstairs in the bar/dinning room. Over a stay of 4 days I had to approach staff on 3 separate occasions and ask them to turn down the music as it was so loud I could here evry word in my room. The crowning blow was Whitney Houston at 6.50am on the last morning!!!! We ate each night in the dining room and although everything we had was good enough there was very little choice unless you paid a supplement and the daily specials were the same all 4 days, even the soup!!! All the staff we came across were extremely pleasant and helpful but one egyptian gentleman in the dining room overstepped the mark as far as familiarity went and was not perceptive enough to realise that his advances were not appreciated and indeed were causing embarrassment.

"Our wedding day"

06/10/2018

We chose this hotel as our wedding venue and we were not disappointed!! The staff are fantastic!! They were personal, helpful and efficient. I really can't praise Jonathan and his team enough. The food was amazing, the canapés were very substantial and tasty, the wedding breakfast was gorgeous and the evening buffet great. The portions were all very generous, hot and served efficiently. We stayed two night, first night in a regular room and the second the bridal suite - both rooms were clean, spacious and modern. The staff ensured everything ran smoothly both in the lead up to the wedding and on the actual day. Everything was perfect and there was nothing I would change about the day. We had one of the best days of our lives, guests commented on it being the best wedding they had ever been to and we had so many positive comments about the food. Thank you so much Jonathan and his amazing staff.... I would very highly recommend x

"Good value Dinner,Bed and Breakfast"

04/10/2018

Had a very pleasant stay at this hotel. The evening meal and the breakfast were excellent. My wife and I would like to extend our thanks to the staff. Everyone was so very attentive. The accommodation itself could do with a bit of a spruce up but overall we really enjoyed our stay in Knaresborough.

"Lovely Hotel "

30/09/2018

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel and we loved Knaresborough. Room 7 was perfectly adequate for our needs, huge comfortable bed, lovely spacious room, nice decor, tea/coffee making facilities, TV, two fans which we didn't need, plenty of wardrobe/storage space, modern bathroom, very quiet so we had a good nights sleep, we couldn't fault it. Check in and check out was very smooth and efficient and the staff were all friendly, pleasant and helpful. We would definitely stay here again and would have no hesitation recommending the hotel to family and friends.

"Fantastic staff"

30/09/2018

Just returned from a weekend family gathering at this hotel. Although the corridors and rooms are a bit tired and could do with updating, our rooms were spacious and the beds very comfortable. What really impressed us was the quality of the staff. It was a very busy weekend in the hotel but everyone we met was cheerful, helpful, efficient and friendly, and very hardworking. We had dinner both nights and the food was well cooked and beautifully presented. We chose the hotel in order to go to Ripon races and the hotel organised a six-seater taxi for us. Overall, a great stay and we would recommend this hotel for its wonderful staff.

"A pleasant good value comfortable place to stay"

24/09/2018

We have just returned from a night at this hotel. We did the Autumn get away deal where we paid £149 for 1 nights stay, Dinner, Bed, Breakfast, Tea and cake and use of the spa and for that you couldn't go wrong. The brilliant things first as these are what matter and made our stay great. 1) the friendliness and attitude of every member of staff; couldn't fault anyone. They all went our of their way to be fantastic 2) Our bedroom, quiet, spacious, clean, with a very very comfortable bed. Black out curtains made it nice and dark. 3) The Food was excellent. Often local, home made and well cooked. Delicious, local and very enjoyable to eat. We had a 3 course evening meal, and breakfast in the morning and it was all just perfect. Well done to the chef. We genuinely enjoyed every mouthful. And our red wine was served at perfect temperature 4) The Spa. It was small but the foot baths on hot seats were a lovely little extra, and we enjoyed the pool, the steam room and Jacuzzi. We mainly had to spa to ourselves which was really nice. These are the things that matter and for all of these reasons I would definitely return and recommend this place Why this is very good, rather than Excellent? The showers in the spa changing rooms...... they were not hot and had hardly any power at all. They were so weak that I couldn't wash my hair, (so I went upstairs and used the hot powerful shower in my en-suite) The TV bracket in our bedroom was clearly broken, so it would have been really awkward to watch the TV. (we didn't switch it on but had we have wanted to it would have been an issue) The door to our en-suite didn't close properly or lock! The sash window didn't operate correctly... we either had to have the whole top sash dropped down the whole way with window open as wide as possible or not at all. Just needs some TLC / maintenance. Charging guests £2 to park their car!!!!! Its 2018..... I understand the charge is small, but really? I think id rather pay £2 extra for the room then have this silly amount added to the bill! I think it would make better business sense to remove this charge rather than irritate guests over a few p! Ultimately we had a lovely night away, with excellent food, a lovely spa experience and a clean, quiet, comfortable bedroom with friendly staff, so yes I would go back and recommend this as a place to stay in Knaresborough.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Dower House & Spa, responded to this review

"Short break in North Yorkshire"

20/09/2018

Pleasant 2 night stay here. The room, whilst on the small side for a double, was well equipped and the bed comfortable. The hotel is clean and the staff are helpful and friendly. Breakfast was good with the regular selections and a few nice touches. (Mrs Reviewer had the smoked salmon). The pool is a little on the small side but again, the facilities were clean and the leisure staff again, very helpful. If you want contemporary, try elsewhere but this hotel offers a decent standard of accommodation at a reasonable price.

"Fantastic venue for a wedding"

5
20/09/2018

The Dowerhouse hosted our wedding and from the word go nothing was too much for Jonathon and his excellent team. The fine details were all taken care of leaving us to enjoy our day. The food was excellent, particularly the sticky toffee pudding, the staff were helpful, courteous and responded to all requests and happily took feedback. I fully expected to have some bumps in the road on the wedding day but it ran absolutely smoothly from start to finish. This team is excellent, the guests loved it, fantastic relaxed atmosphere with beautiful gardens and a great function room. Do not hesitate to book it.

"Housekeeping not up to standard"

3
19/09/2018

A quick overnight stop arriving too late for dinner. Bedding was clean also the bathroom towels but nothing else had been attended to since the people before moved out. Carpet needed hovering, long dark hairs on bathroom floor, toilet seat was loose and had to be very careful when sitting on it. The shower gel and shampoo bottles had been used but still lying on corner of bath with tops missing and in a puddle of water. An early start so decided to forgo the breakfast and have it elsewhere. Wouldn't go back.

"Dower? No."

16/09/2018

We stayed 2 nights in September. We ate both breakfast and dinner there, both of which were consistent and excellent. I swam once. All the staff in this hotel and Spa are welcoming, friendly and helpful. Some parts of the hotel could use a little tlc but there was nothing major -- a door handle, a floor board... Our room overlooked a car park. I would go back.

"OMG Room 1 is disgusting!"

1
16/09/2018

The Dower House, Knaresborough, York, England. Room number 1 is awful and sickening. The drains are blocked and stink, the shower drain was cleaned by the evening bar man, and air freshener was used, but it didn't really reduce the sickening smell. The hotel was full so our room couldn't be changed. The wardrobe door was broken. The windows are single glazed allowing all noise from the carpark in too. The room door lock is damaged. The room above is extremely noisy, with very squeaky floor boards, so any movement up there is deafening in room 1. Unfortunately for us, the person in the room above was up at 06:15 on Sat morning, therefore as a result, so was we! On a weekend the facilities are not open until 08:00, so there's nothing else to do but sit in the room listening to the noise above. Even the TV noise doesn't help! By 07:00, we had enough and simply had to leave, very tired. Upon checking out, the receptionist asked if all was ok with the room? We said no, told her of all the problems, of which she already knew about tge drain problem because the evening staff had made a note, so she said she would get the manager to call us but unsurprisingly, 24 hours later, we've not received the promised call... couldn't fault the evening staff, they tried their best, but they couldn't resolve the problem. We had no option but to stay, we had already had a couple of beers, so unable to drive! No compensation of any sort offered by any staff here, no offer of partial refund etc. despite how bad the whole experience was. I will be keeping away from Best Westerns in the future.

"Relaxing Stay"

10/09/2018

The hotel is well situated in central Knaresborough. It is a lovely building and the bedroom that I stayed in was really comfortable. The staff were fabulous. I was travelling on my own and they went out of their way to make me welcome and comfortable. The spa was a grand traet after a long drive

"Beautiful stay at knaresborough"

04/09/2018

Just got back from a three night stay at this lovely hotel, very good location for visiting york and other places, but lots of scenic and historic places to visit in knaresborough. The pool and spa were a bonus and the breakfast was lovely

"Lots of good things, but a few minuses"

3
01/09/2018

The positives 1. Beautiful building 2. Central in Knaresborough 3. Excellent staff 4. Bar and restaurant nice 5. Excellent breakfast The not so goods 1. Bedrooms and bathrooms tired, and some strange decor 2. A little bit grubby 3. No bottled water in bedrooms Summary, it's reasonably priced for what you get, it's friendly and well located but not a boutique hotel

"Disappointing for a Best Western"

2
01/09/2018

Visited this Best Western hotel for one night, which was admittedly a Bank Holiday Sunday. The room has been booked for us by a friend who we were visiting but I understand that it was the last room available - at least on Bookings.com. Arrival time is 3.00 and we arrived at 2.55 to be told that our room was not yet available - would we like to sit in the lounge or bar and they would let us know when it was ready. 45 minutes later we had to go to reception to ask whether it was ready yet, and of course it was, but they had forgotten to tell us! The room was in the annex on the ground floor (room 1) which had disabled access. (We did not require disabled access but if we had, access to the room and bathroom would have been adequate but there was very little space elsewhere in the room that would have been wheelchair accessible.) The room was in urgent need of modernisation. Ther wardrobe space was limited with sliding doors, one of which would not shut and where the metal edge to the door was hanging off. The bathroom was very dingy with a central light bulb that gave a glow rather than a light. My wife fould it difficult to do her makeup with this light. The tiled floor looked old and resembled the stable floor that was probably the original use of the annex. The shower was poor. The bed was fine and the rest of the room was acceptable if, like us, you only wanted to sleep there for one night. Breakfast was an extra cost and, for one price only, there was a wide choice of either cooked dishes or Continental style breakfasts. Perhaps we were there on a busy weekend (there had been a weeding there the day before) but from our experience we would not choose to stay there again.

"A heart beat away from being a great hotel"

4
21/08/2018

Just had 3 nights at the Dower House with my parents. Fabulous welcome, staff couldn't do enough for you. Pleasant smiles and hellos from everyone encountered. Restaurant and bar both very good. However, It's the tiny things that let this place down. This sounds a bit petty and all could be remedied with a quick word with reception but I shouldn't have to do that. No spare toilet roll, no soap in one of the bathrooms, reception not booking tables for dinner in the restaurant despite being asked twice. No showstoppers and nothing that would stop me from coming again but leaves the hotel at a good but.... level rather than the excellent it very easily could be.

"Sunday night away."

21/08/2018

We stayed in the cottage room this weekend which we origionally booked because we intended to take our dog. We were taken to our room and it was so lovely we were very impressed! Nice bedroom and great modern barhroom! We visited the spa and the pool was nice and warm. Facilities good. We had drinks in the bar and they were definately not over priced. Breakfast next morning was buffet for continental items and then waiter service. Food very good quality. Could of stayed another night we had a lovely time!

"Fabulous spa break"

5
20/08/2018

Took my Mam for a little spa break and was amazed by how nice dower was. The staff are amazing especially Wael who couldn't do enough for us and made our stay more memorable. We both had spa treatments which were fantastic. The pool area was lovely too. Food was amazing and our evening meal was delicious. I would definitely recommend dower to anyone

"Faded Elegance"

3
19/08/2018

The smell of cat as we entered reception probably gives a clue. The hotel needs investment in its upstairs bedrooms and it is possible that available resources have been diverted to its spar. The staff were trying very hard but there were not enough of them to cope at breakfast or check-out. Since we are at odds with recent reviews we may have caught them on a bad day and had a particularly poor room but my summery is 'Faded Elegance' with the emphasis on the former.

"What a great place to stay"

5
11/08/2018

This is a great little hotel with the added benefit of a pool. You can chose from being in the quaint rooms from the original building or the newer rooms. The staff were very helpful and the food in the restaurant was very good

"Tired hotel in need of some TLC"

2
19/07/2018

Stayed here for 4 nights for work, the good points of this hotel are Lots of parking Great cooked breakfast Gym facilities The bad Unfortunately the hotel is a bit on the tired side, bathroom fittings falling off the wall, grubby paint work, saggy mattress and squeaky floorboards throughout the hallway. We came back after a downpour of rain to find the bar area soaking wet where the ceiling had leaked followed by sitting in a dark bar area as the staff were worried about turning the lights on! After the 1st night I asked if it would be possible to do something about the terrible mattress to be told “doubt it” from the receptionist who didn't look like she wanted to be there. The hotel is massively understaffed which means the service isn't great, slow service in the bar and food left on the floor for days shows just how stretched they all are. Honestly this place could be ok if a bit of investment was put into the hotel. Don't think I will be returning anytime soon.

"Four night short break."

4
19/07/2018

After a long journey we arrived to a warm welcome and was given our key to the room. We found the room large and comfortable and this was that we had been upgraded as we were staying for four days.We had booked for dinner and found that there were lots of choices on all courses. Breakfasts had lots of choices and the cooked breakfast was cooked to order and turned up hot each morning. In general the stay was most comfortable but the house keeping was poor due to lack of attn to detail ie no tea bags one day to no sugar on another, we reported light bulb not working in the bathroom on the first day but was not replaced during our stay.

"Excellent "

5
13/07/2018

Stayed here for 1 night before heading to Ripon the following day. Warm welcome by reception, we went straight to the spa which was definetley needed after a long drive in 28 degree heat! Facilities were excellent. We had room 7 which was quiet and a good size with a modern bathroom. The hotel had a fan running in our room on arrival which was a nice touch. Good selection at breakfast, enjoyed table service rather than a help yourself buffet. Would absolutely stay again.

"Party killers"

1
08/07/2018

Attended a social evening here. Our organisation hired the main room, hired a band & had a great evening ........... right up until 11.30 when the extremely grumpy bar staff refused to serve anyone who wasn't a resident. We were forced to walk into town where, thankfully, the local Weatherspoons were less picky about taking our money! Personally, I would have expected the hotel to have been more than happy to have found people willing to pay the extortionate prices being charged (over £6 for a single spirit plus mixer!!) Bottom line- there are cheaper places to party for longer, and they definitely have much friendlier staff.

"Pleasant historic hotel in a village setting"

3
01/07/2018

We stayed 2 nights in a very comfortable room. One suggestion we would make is that the menu, which is the same each night, could be enhanced with nightly Specials menu, together with a better vegetarian choice.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay. We offer specials each night on the Specials board in the Bistro - I apologise if you were not made aware of these during your stay. We hope to see you again soon. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Check in to Check out"

4
01/07/2018

Finding it was the biggest challenge as the signage is not very clear and we drove past it and had to turn round – thank you satnav. From checkin to checkout everything was great. The requirements we had asked for when booking were met so the room we were allocated suited our needs exactly. Beds were comfortable with clean, white bedlinen and enough drawer and wardrobe space for our needs. The gentleman on reception told us to just ring if we needed anything at all. After arrival we went out looking around the immediate vicinity and the first night we ate at a local Wetherspoon. Breakfast next morning we met other members of staff namely; Monika, Steve and Elaine in the restaurant who served us with smiles and efficiency making the experience enjoyable and certainly not rushed. We also met Becca on reception where we booked a table for the evening meal as it was a special occasion for us and as Becca had already emailed a copy of the menu to us the previous week so we knew what to expect. We then spent that day out of the hotel. Presenting to the restaurant that evening we were pleasantly surprised to find a card and a small box of chocolates on the table congratulating us on our wedding anniversary. That made us feel a little special. Staff made a point of congratulating us and the evening took on a very friendly atmosphere. Had soup of the day which was mushroom which was very dark but I have never tasted mushroom soup as good as that before – excellent. Main course was to the same high standard and we couldn't manage a dessert without feeling fit to burst. We left early on 3rd day as we had commitments but believe we would have extended the stay if possible. We cannot thank everyone enough for making our stay so pleasant and enjoyable. I will be recommending to all our friends

"One night stay "

29/06/2018

Stayed for one night on our way to Berwick upon Tweed and the hotel was spot on for that purpose. We had rooms 18 and 3 which were very nice. Good value at 75 pounds per room booked well in advance via a hotel comparison website. Swimming pool was very nice. Special mention of the ladies on reception, who quickly and efficiently moved my parents from the unsuitable room they were originally allocated. Thank you once again. Happy to recommend.

"Avoid room 9 - Very small, very noisy, in need of refurbishment"

1
24/06/2018

Stayed here because this was a Best Western which are usually good. Got room 9 - very small - needed to move the bedside cabinet to open the wardrobe door!, no BBC on the television 'because of the arial' - shame the world cup was on, lamps so dim they were useless, bathroom fitting hanging on (just), could hear every word from the bar and the smoking area. Matress had seen better days - very noticable sag in the middle. Reception showed no surprise when I complained. Restaurant staff were good but food was mediocre and portions small. Breakfast better. Will certainly not be going back.

"Tired, desperate for an overhaul."

23/06/2018

Recently stayed with my wife for 2 nights. Room was upstairs, no lift, stairs steep with narrow treads and handrails quite sticky. Carpets in corridor and our room obviously hadn't seen a vacuum cleaner in a while. Room was otherwise adequate, single beds pushed together to form a large double, bathroom had an electric shower within the bath and a warm towel rail. Tea & coffee were supplied in room. We dined in the Hotel restaurant on both nights and food was really good but same menu each night made me wonder how often it was changed. We retired to the lounge for drinks from the bar both nights, the furnishings were tired and unfortunately not very comfortable. A good nights sleep was possible due to the lack of disturbance from both inside or outside the hotel. Though our room had supposedly been serviced after the first night, no toilet tissue was left and we had to request one from the reception. Breakfast was served in the Dining Room and though there was a fine selection of fruit juices, cereals, fresh fruit, yoghurts etc, cooked breakfast were prepared upon order and included bacon, sausage, various eggs, tomatoes, mushrooms, beans, fried bread, porridge, kippers and much more and was very good accompanied with as much Toast (little individual pots of jam, honey & marmalade, tea or coffee as required. Very good. It does have a swimming pool and spa but we didn't use this.

"Relaxing spa"

3
19/06/2018

Staff friendly from the outset. Room more basic than expected for £99 for the night. Bedding worn looking and net curtain had stains on the bottom. The bath too narrow and took ages to fill up. The spa was the best bit - my hubby enjoyed the pool and we both enjoyed the steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. Breakfast was nicely cooked but the cold buffet a bit lacking with the fruit salad less than lack lustre. Good parking facilities - only £2 for 24 hours.

"Excellent break"

5
15/06/2018

Stayed here 3 nights during the last week of May. Excellent hotel in very convenient spot and at a very reasonable rate too. Room comfortable, quiet and very convenient for spa area. Breakfast was nice combination of cold buffet plus hot food cooked to order. Plenty of variety available. Didn't eat here in the evening or use the bar as plenty of good local bars and restaurants at reasonable prices, but the bar area did look quite inviting. We used the pool every day. Although fairly small it never seemed to get over busy and also comes with Jacuzzi, foot spa, steam room and sauna. Great for an hour of relaxation. The only disappointment was that the spa treatments were all fully booked for the time we were there (maybe a reflection of their popularity?). Would certainly visit again. Knaresborough is a lovely spot for a short break with lots of beautiful river walks and the town itself has a lot of character. Harrogate is only a 10 minute train ride away and well worth a visit

best western is my favourite hotel group, I booked a 1 night spa break at Dower House, we made use of all the facilities at the spa before our treatment.then we had a relaxing raindrop massage, in a tranquil atmosphere. delicious evening meal , 3 courses on offer, the menu was mouth watering sweet potato soup was amazing, A full English breakfast or continental, highest quality produce , so tasty all the staff were so friendly, genuinely looked very happy in their work, creating a very relaxed atmosphere, in particular Monika, such a bubbly, enthusiastic member of the restaurant staff, so much energy always happy, nothing was an effort. it was one of the best spa breaks we have had, we would definitely return to Dower House.

This was a lovely hotel. The spa was excellent and the staff really helpful. We did not get to eat dinner in the restaurant, but breakfast was really tasty. Bar was very smart and we'll decorated. Will definitely be visiting again, hopefully for a long weekend

"A Lovely Spa Hotel in a Great Location"

23/05/2018

We stayed here 3 nights and were very disappointed with our first night as the double room was tiny and very tired in decor. We complained and were moved to a a superb room which really exceeded our expectations and was still described as a 'standard room'. So, be warned! Great staff and very friendly. Good spa and swimming pool. Excellent dining.

20/05/2018

Just returned from a weekend spa break which was excellent. The hotel staff were very friendly and attentive and the hotel room was nice. My mum and I both had a treatment in the spa and used the gym. The spa staff were lovely and the treatments very good. The evening meal was very tasty and there was a good selection on offer. The hotel is in an ideal location for exploring Knaresborough and was very good value for money!

"Excellent Spa Day"

14/05/2018

My friend and I planned a much needed day away from our families for a day of peace and pampering. We had a phone call 2 days prior to say that they were spa member down with an apology and option to rebook or come anyway with reduced spa options. Given we had booked it months in advance we went anyways. On the day the general manager was brill and couldn't do enough to ensure we had a great day. Our spa treatment was great, relaxation room a lovely tranquil space to read and just be. High tea was nicely done and the use of all of the facilities was fantastic. We had a fantastic day and will be going back!

"Wedding Venue"

09/05/2018

We were looking for a venue in Harrogate or nearby and looked at a number of Harrogate hotels from which none particularly stood out. As soon as we entered the Dower House we knew that this had to be the one. It was quite intimate with a nice terrace and not too big for our 50 or so guests, although more could have been accommodated if required. We worked closely with Jonathan, the General Manager, from the beginning, meeting on numerous occasions. He was very professional throughout and very forgiving of our numerous changes of plan, as well as being able to work around our planned 6 week trip overseas just before the wedding. We decided on a choice of menu and were invited for dinner to sample some of the available options. The food was excellent and we met the chef, Victoria, and were able to thank her in person. We were blessed by very good weather on our wedding day and, due to Jonathan's expertise, all went according to plan. Even the DJ was good and was able to accommodate many dedications with the music appropriate to the age range of the guests. Without exception our guests remarked on how well everything went and how good the food was. We were slightly concerned that Victoria wouldn't be able to produce our dinner for two to the same standard for 50 or so but we needn't have worried. It was excellent. Finally we would just like to say that all of the staff worked really hard to make the day go well. It went more than well - it was wonderful!

"A bit of a disappointment"

05/05/2018

We went here with a group of friends for lunch recently, having not been for a while. It was a bit of a let down as we had a nice soup to start with but it arrived very thick and not very hot. We followed this with seabass in a sauce (the sauce was quite tasty) but sadly the fish was very dry as though it had been under a heat lamp for too long. The vegetables were nicely cooked and a good selection. We then followed this by sticky toffee pudding which was delicious both the sauce and sponge really well cooked and served with ice cream. The quality of the meal would have been much better if a little more care had been taken over some of the preparation and speed of service. The staff were very pleasant and friendly and if I had not been with a group of friends I would have sent some of my food back - what a shame.

"Fantastic Location and Super Staff"

02/05/2018

I stayed here for 2 nights with my sister in April 2018 and from the time we arrived until the moment we left I can honestly say I have never stayed anywhere where the staff where all so lovely and helpful. Nothing was too much. The Dower House is a good place to stay, perhaps in need of a little TLC especially in the Spa area, but I would definately stay there again. The food was lovely and the setting was great.

"Probably the best hotel in Knaresborough."

23/04/2018

We stayed in two doubles on a B&B basis at Easter and had evening meals on Two nights out of three. Breakfast was cooked to order and the choice of extras on the buffet table was more than adequate. Evening meals were tasty too - although one might find the choices a bit narrow if staying for more than a few days - and fine value for money with polite but friendly service. The rooms on the 1st floor were a decent size with a nice view over the rear garden and comfy beds. I did find the pillows a bit on the hard side, but my wife did not, so that's just a personal preference. I'm sure if I'd asked I would have been given softer ones by the very helpful staff at reception. The hotel is in a very good location for walking down to the water side promenade and sits just at the end of the main street about a ten minute walk from the railway station and busses to Harrogate stop just outside the hotel. A fine place and I'd stay again.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your lovely comments about the hotel and the team. I am pleased that you found the hotel to be a fine place and value for money. We are ideally located on the Harrogate bus route and just a stones throw from the train station. Please remember where we are the next time that you are visiting the area. Best wishes, Jonathan

Just returned from a stay at the Best Western in Knaresborough. Very impressed with the hotel. Have stayed in Best Westerns before but only down in the East Midlands (Yew Tree Lodge nice also). Evening Meal in restaurant was lovely Breakfast too - plenty to choose from. Walked in on a Saturday lunchtime last minute to book for the night. Just a standard double available but everything catered for and nice view over the garden. Would definitely recommend.

19/04/2018

I stayed at the Dower House for one night whilst in the area on business and was made to feel very welcome. The staff were pleasant, helpful and actually went out of their way to help. The rooms were ultra clean and being a very light sleeper I was surprised how well I actually slept. The whole hotel was beautifully decorated and breakfast plentiful and tasty. I had smoked salmon with scrambled eggs for breakfast whist was beautifully presented. I was actually sad upon seeing the menu that I had not arrived earlier for dinner. Two minor niggles. 1) Why charge residents £2 for parking? 2) Opening the room door required two hands due to the Yale type lock, which made entry difficult with items in hand. I am very much looking forward to returning.

"Wedding reception."

13/04/2018

Attended a wedding reception here recently which was very enjoyable but the overnight stay was only average. First, the positives. The young staff members were very hardworking and friendly, a credit to the hotel. The 'wedding breakfast ' was good, nicely cooked, served hot and in generous portions. The function room was just the right size for the party. Together with the lounge and bar there was space to mingle and the heating was on during a very cold spell. The cooked elements of the breakfast were very good and made to order. The areas for improvement; The bedroom (12) was very small and a bit drab. The single glazed sash windows were draughty and the room was cold. The continental elements of breakfast were disappointing with limited choice. For example no muesli/ granola, ham/cheese, nice breads, just boxed cereals, toasted sliced bread and croissants. The room rate (£99) was claimed to be a special rate for wedding guests but was higher than seen on booking sites. It seemed expensive for the grade of establishment. On top of that they charge £2 per day for parking which strikes me as greedy. The wedding reception went well but I wouldn't recommend this hotel for a leisure break.

02/04/2018

Just enjoyed a 2 night Spa Break at this hotel with my daughter. Brilliant!!!! From arrival to departure met with the most amazing friendly service. Fabulous food. Spacious rooms with excellent facilities and really comfortable beds. The Spa is fantastic and treatments are all reasonably priced. Would recommend to anyone, any age group, any ability. 30 minutes drive from Leeds so handy for a day visit but I would thoroughly recommend an overnight stay to make it a real occasion.

I enjoy staying in the historic Dower House for its old world ambiance, but for that very reason, rooms do vary, floors squeak with age and beams in the ceiling are low. To me this is its charm. The staff is always accommodating....I've stayed here 3 times...and I LOVE that they'll deliver breakfast to my room if I place my order the previous evening. Just spent 3 nights here over the Easter weekend and am looking forward to next time.

I have stayed in this hotel twice. Two years ago I had a nice and spacious room in the annexe. This January I had not so nice room above the restaurant. Heating wasn't adequate. The room was despiriting and cold. On the second night, there was a functiom downstairs so it was very noisy until midnight. There was no sound proof whatsoever! It's an ok hotel if you are lucky enough to get one of the better rooms. However, there are far better places to stay in nearby Harrogate and that's exactly what I'm going to do next time.

We had 3 very enjoyable nights here, 2 rooms as my Mum came with us. No faults or negatives to report. Service was prompt, no waiting time in the bar as someone else said. Very good choice of breakfast in the light & bright dining room. All staff courteous, chatty & friendly. Free use of swimming pool, sauna, jacuzzi etc. Nice bar area, separate lounge with sofa's & tv. We had a small camp bed in our room for our 3 yr old which was more than satisfactory. Highly recommend. (only very slight neg comment, if you run out of tomato sauce, pop out & buy a bottle until the wholesaler delivers. & £2 car park was unnecessary)

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your lovely comments. I am pleased that you had a fantastic stay with us and that you found the staff to be both courteous and friendly. I take your negative comments on board. I hope that you will return and take advantage of the hotel in a different season. Best wishes, Jonathan

27/03/2018

Enjoyed three night stay in this pleasant and friendly hotel. Good sized bedroom and bathroom (room 20) offering easy access to leisure facilities. Public areas were spacious and well furnished. Breakfast offers good hot food selection and quality, although cold buffet was somewhat limited – no selection of breads, meats and cheeses. Parking on site and just five minutes walk into town centre and to train station, the latter offers excellent service (half hourly) to Harrogate, Leeds and York. Knaresborough offers good range of shops, cafes and restaurants plus some lovely walks around the castle and along the river Nidd. Richard & Elizabeth

My husband and I been here yesterday for ‘BNSM' We asked for deep tissue, as we had this treatment done from the Hazlewood Castle before and it was really good massage quite firm and yet so enjoyable. I'm quite disappointed about our treatments in here yesterday. The woman who did my massage was full of attitude when I questioned an explanation of a treatment. She didn't even warm up my muscle before she starts doing the firm pressure. It feels like I have been beaten up by a sumo wrestler. I asked if she could do a medium pressure instead. She was literally tried to make her point, that I did picked the wrong treatment. It was very uncomfortable from start to finish. I work in the same industry and always make sure that my clients are comfortable with the pressure. I think warming up the muscle before performing deeper pressure will help to avoid any injuries. I wouldn't recommend this place at all.

Dower House Knaresborough. The usual high standards we have come to expect from Best Western. Lovely Hotel with a welcoming feel. Our room seemed to have had a fairly recent makeover with the smell of new carpet which is always nice. An interesting menu albeit a little heavy on the cheese! But lovely well cooked and presented food. The staff were all polite and helpful, when you could find them! That leads me on to the only slight let down, we seemed to loose all staff too often, they disappeared! We had been given our Starter, one was soup but had not been given a spoon. Waited and then walked around trying to locate someone but not even anyone on reception? After what felt longer than what it probably was someone appeared. Similar issue when checking out, stood at reception for a while, patiently, ended up the waitress in the restaurant said she would find someone. I would simply suggest that the staff spend more time on the shop floor than behind the scenes. And maybe get a bell of some sort for the reception. These are by no means complaints just anecdotes from our stay. All in all a lovely stay and these small issues would not put us off staying again in the future. We would like to mention Monika from the restaurant, she was professional and polite and provided very good service!

Fabulous stay at this hotel. Stopped for a five nighter and glad I did. Very nice warm welcome on arrival and got the feeling straight away that nothing was too much. Willing to reserve parking for me as I had a small truck. Offered to help with luggage and sorted the bedroom layout as soon as I asked. Its not a modern place, very old building but it was clean and very warm. The ceilings are low but i managed to get by. Breakfast was nice too. The staff are brilliant especially Sarah on reception. Thanks Sarah you made me feel very welcome and comfortable indeed. I will definitely stop here again.

Dreadful , we booked in her for two nights with my elderly mum (80) as we were travelling down from Scotland to attend a family event in Knaersborough. The hotel is shabby , rooms are tiny and so noisy . They put my mum in a room over a sub station / Plant room , without any notification of such and she never slept at all the first night. When we brought this to the attention of the reception staff next morning , she was moved to another room . However , even our room was so noisy , with noise from the bar / restaurant below .... omg dreadful . Only saving grace in the whole weekend was the food . Breakfast , lovely , freshly cooked , although breakfast waitress could do with putting her happy good morning face on. Dinner first night also excellent, such a shame that poor standard of accommodation and serious disruptive noise from the Bar it let it down . Would never stay here again ... ohh and mattresses on beds so soft you literally roll into the middle .

Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay. I am sorry that you found your room to be noisy and that you could hear guest's in the bar downstairs. I am pleased however that the hotel was in silence by 9.30pm as everyone had gone to bed. I will pass on your kind comments to the chef who will be pleased that you enjoyed her food. WOW! Probably the best service I have ever received from a hotel! I stayed the night for my 10 year old daughter's birthday treat. The staff were warm and welcoming and we stayed in room number 3. There is a cosy bar complete with a log fire to snuggle up to. The spa area complete with pool, Jacuzzi, steam room and foot spas is immaculately clean. The room was warm and comfortable, clean and the beds were excellent. But, what about the staff? They were chatty and interested in both my daughter and me. In the morning of her birthday a separate table was laid out (like a mini wedding), with linen and diamond bits on the table. Balloons, a birthday card and a bag of Quality Streets. The breakfast choices were plentiful. Cereals, pastries, fruit, yoghurt, various cooked breakfasts including smoked salmon and scrambled eggs (my favourite). At the end of breakfast the staff came over with a mini chocolate cake, complete with candles and a chocolate ‘Happy Birthday' message written on the plate. Not only that the staff gathered around and sang happy birthday too her. For the rest of our stay wherever we went the staff kept wishing her happy birthday and it rubbed off onto the other guests too. Even when we went for a swim they were full of cheer for my little girl. – Absolutely amazing. I would like to pass on my thanks to ALL the staff for making our stay so special. xxx

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you so much for lovely comments. The staff have all been so excited to read of your comments and we are really pleased that Constance enjoyed her birthday treat. Her birthday really did make for a fantastic weekend for not only you and your daughter, but as you mentioned, it seemed to create a real buzz around both the staff and all of our guests that stayed over the weekend. Thank you for making all of our jobs so easy as we really do enjoy delighting our guests. It was a pleasure meeting you both and we hope that you will return again soon. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Weekend spa visit"

05/03/2018

A friend and I visited for a Sunday night stay/spa deal. She had phoned the hotel on the Friday prior to up our spa treatment time, and was told it wouldn't be a problem for us both to extend our time by half an hour if desired. She booked hers but as she couldn't get hold of myself, asked the best thing to do - the member of staff on the phone told her that they weren't busy so wouldn't be a problem. On arrival, we discovered that there was no extra time available. Obviously disappointed, we asked whether there was anything they could do, and were just stared at by four team members stood behind the counter. Uncomfortable. Once in the spa, the area around the loungers was dirty, a lot of hair on the floor. No-one came to discuss our treatment choice as we were told would happen. Therapist was full of total attitude when I questioned an explanation of a treatment, just awful, not relaxing at all. Door handle fell off bathroom door, barman could barely speak English - we had to point over the bar to drinks we wanted and had to tell him correct glasses to use, then had the lo-down on how he didn't like alcohol and preferred the gym! The deposit had not been actioned when we came to pay and we were not asked if we had enjoyed our stay. Only redeeming feature was the cooked breakfast and the girl who served us. Would not recommend.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I wish to pass on my apologies for a disappointing stay. I can assure you that we do take the time to delight our guests and hate to disappoint. I will pass on your feedback to Imagine Spa who I am sure will contact you shortly in a bid to restore your faith. I am sorry for the other issues that you encountered. We take on board all guest comments and can assure you that we will be fully investigating the points that you have raised. We hope that you will return and see us all again. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Event at the Dower House - bar service poor"

3
05/03/2018

I attended a charity event at the hotel at the weekend. The venue was easy to find and was warm and welcoming. The hotel clearly liked having the event and the large number of guests buying at the bar but that is where the problem was... not enough staff or large enough bar area. They did make an attempt to sell bottles in a separate queue, however I waited more than 20 mins to be served. To be fair - there were only three people in front of me in the queue! The staff were slow, the beer pumps were slow, a staff member disappeared for change and was gone over ten minutes then returned gave the lady her change and disappeared again. All in all, the bar service was inadequate. If you like a good night out with a few beverages this may not be the place for you to book your event if you have more than a few guests. The "canape" type food was served before and after the entertainment, It was warm and enjoyable but the same things came out over and over again - very limited in what there was. I asked one server what one of the items contained and she said chorizo. I bit into it and it was fish - a shock when it is something I detest! Overall, not somewhere I would choose to go to again or book an event at myself.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your comments regarding your recent visit. I am pleased that you found the hotel to be warm and welcoming. I know that the Robbie Williams event went well and that lots of money was raised for the Candlelighters children's cancer charity. The bar was very busy on the evening, I am sorry that you had to wait despite 4 members of staff serving at times. I apologise if you feel that the food offering on the evening was limited. The organisers work extremely hard in order for the proceeds of the event to go to the charity. I am pleased that you found it to be enjoyable all the same. Best wishes, Jonathan

Due to the snow in Northumberland we had to check in 2 days prior to our original reservation date with our dog. Becca was most accommodating and the Front of House team along with the Restaurant staff looked after Peter & myself in what was a very stressful run up to our son's wedding yesterday. The room was extremely comfortable, the menu & spa very good. I fully recommend the hotel for comfort & relaxation as well as the location making it accessible for Harrogate & York with the train station being 5 mins away. Thank you team Dower House.

24/02/2018

This little and romantic hotel is perfect for special occasions or just to relax from your daily routine. We came for our anniversary and the hotel had put some rose petals on the bed which was a lovely touch. The hotel is located in beautiful Knaresborough which is worth a visit and staying overnight is even more recommendable at this hotel. It's an old and romantic building, the rooms are small but cosy and provide everything you need. A big plus is the Spa which is free to enter as a hotel guest. It consists of a gym and spa which we really enjoyed. We had a dinner at the hotel and enjoyed this very much as the food was lovely, the staff attentive and the atmosphere quiet and lovely. Good breakfast in the morning to finish perfectly satisfied with our stay at the Dower House. Thanks to all staff for a wonderful stay. P.S. We stayed a while ago but just forgot to submit the review and we will certainly stay again.

"Lovely hotel in a great location delivering excellnt customer service"

22/02/2018

Spent a lovely couple of days here over the February half term holiday. We got a great B & B deal booking direct with Best Western, which also gave us access to the leisure facilities. The Dower House is a very attractive historic building in an excellent location close to the town centre. We were able to check in slightly ahead of time and it was nice for reception staff to make us aware that our room was one of those in an area still undergoing refurbishment so furniture etc was likely to be a bit of a mix. Our room was clean, comfortable & spacious with a large bed and compact ensuite. The décor was a bit tired & as mentioned furniture was indeed mix & match. We quickly made use of the leisure faculties which are very pleasant. Quite a small pool, with a chunk of space taken up by the large jacuzzi which cuts into one corner of the pool . However it is large enough to swim proper lengths and also benefits from a steam room, sauna, foot spa & ice basin. It was an unexpectedly early awakening just after half past six the following morning when we suddenly had an exceptionally loud noise that sounded as though we had a washing machine on fast spin in our bathroom! This then turned in to high pitched squeal - the whole episode lasting a good ten minutes. From listening in our bathroom we came to the conclusion that the din was coming from a neighbouring room & sounded like a faulty shower. We reported this to reception on our way to breakfast & the response was excellent. Immediately the lady on duty said she would report it to maintenance for checking and offered us a change of room. This was (at the time) just across the corridor from our current room so not guaranteed to be exempt from further noise if the fault could not be fixed right away. We left the matter with her & she said she would look at any other options whilst we had breakfast. Breakfast was a very relaxed affair where guests are treated to table service for hot drinks & cooked food - such a pleasant change to the usual self service hot buffet. We had a lovely table by the window with a garden view which added to the general ambience. We couldn't fault the food - good quality ingredients and perfectly cooked poached eggs. On returning to reception we were offered a choice of two other rooms in the older part of the hotel and were given the keys to check them both out before deciding. We opted for Room 3 which at the front of the house with lovely period windows and a simply HUGE ensuite. This was one of the superior grade rooms and incurred no extra charge for us which was a thoughtful touch. Top marks to reception for sorting a new room out so promptly. Though there was no double glazing and the room overlooked the road side of the hotel we were not disturbed by traffic & slept extremely well - the bed being even more comfortable than our previous room. This part of the hotel is very quirky & quaint with a lovely staircase coming up from a spacious lounge area. On our second morning we both opted for the smoked haddock with poached eggs , which was delicious and beautifully cooked. On our last evening we enjoyed a drink at the hotel. The cosy bar area has a lovely wood burner and beautiful flagged floor. The Dower House is a charming hotel and the staff are without exception a real asset to the place, customer service could not be bettered. We would recommend this place very highly & have no hesitation in enjoying another relaxing stay.

Very relaxing and friendly hotel. We arrived early but were given the room almost straight away. Very efficient and attentive staff. I visited with my mum her friend and her friends daughter. We arrived at the dower house hotel before 12 and was allowed to use the spa facilities all day, the package included a 60 minute spa treatment I chose a full body massage this was lovely and very beneficial to my needs. We had lunch at the spa that we pre ordered on arrival. The rooms was clean and tidy and beds very comfy. The 3 course evening meal was very nice and plenty to choose. Lovely evening of drinks in the relaxed bar area. The following morning I went to the gym this was small but had plenty of facilities, very friendly. Also free on site parking. Lovely relaxing weekend would visit again.

We stayed here between Christmas and New Year and although cold outside the room was warm and cosy. The hotel is not modern and the floorboards do creak but that adds to the charm. Friendly helpful staff. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening but the breakfast was cooked to order and of good quality with a lovely view of the snow falling in the garden from the picture windows.

Really nice hotel in quiet Knaresborough. Good Leisure Centre with pool, spa, steam room and sauna. Handy for rest of North Yorkshire. Less than 15 minutes drive from Harrogate, spa town with lots of pubs and restaurants. Would highly recommend.

The staff allowed us to drop our bags off 5 hours before normal check-in times as we had just driven up from Manchester Airport. Quaint and lovely, the hotel is really quite charming. We had three rooms booked. The cottage, a ground floor room, and a 2nd floor room. All were cozy. Breakfast includes a nice buffet spread but you can also order a hot breakfast if you choose. There were several events going on over the course of the week that we stayed and of course the spa is available on site as well.

This hotel represents fabulous value for money. Five of us stayed over for my sister's birthday. We paid £120 each for dinner, bed, breakfast, use of spa and 60 minutes of treatments. The chef, Victoria, is incredible. The food is high quality and well presented. I had potato, black pudding and poached egg salad to start with followed by sirloin steak, chips, tomato and a mushroom. I had Bakewell slice and ice cream for pudding! The treatments were high quality with experienced staff. We are coming back soon! Staff very friendly too.

We stayed for 3 nights on a bed and breakfast rate whilst visiting family in the local area. We were made very welcome from the moment we arrived - fast efficient check in by Sarah and an immediate offer to take bags to our room by James (more of him later!). We were delighted with our room - spacious, spotless, great bathroom and in a very peaceful section of the hotel. We dined on two occasions at the hotel - in the restaurant the first night and the bar on our last. We were impressed with all that we had and service was always spot on. We were a little disconcerted that on our last night there was a fairly large function taking place in the restaurant. The guests took over the whole bar before the event - it was mayhem!! It might have been nice to know in advance that the event was taking place and we would certainly have made alternative plans. It was fairly difficult for us as we were joined by my 85 year old mum who is not that mobile and it was not an easy task to take her anywhere else for our evening meal. Undeterred we decided to remain at the hotel and eat in the bar - huge thanks to James and Hannah who looked after us splendidly and did all they could to make sure we were looked after despite being very busy. Note to management please tell residents that functions are taking place so they are forewarned! We were fortunate that our room was in a quiet annexe as I am sure the live band would have been a little imposing too! Breakfast was brilliant on all three mornings - beautifully presented, lovely service. We couldn't fault it! The hotel bar has a wonderful ambience with a roaring fire - loved it! The spa looked wonderful - my husband took advantage of the swimming pool and again was very impressed with the facilities and staff on duty. Last but not least we would like to thank James for making our stay so enjoyable. Such a hardworking, professional and entertaining young man. Nothing was ever too much trouble and his customer service was second to none. A real asset to the hotel! Thank you James! We will most certainly be back and highly recommend the The Dower House Hotel, Knaresborough. Thank you to the team.

"Really appalling service"

Was prepared to give 5 stars as dog friendly, and that's worthy of a few extra! Unfortunately the first night there was loud music till 10pm- which was fine, but on the second night, it was so loud it felt like a radio was on in my room. I called down to reception who told me it was the bar. They were playing Celine dion so I doubted it as wasn't very bar sounding. I then called back and was told around 8:30 that it was the bar - but I thought that perhaps they would have done something about it. I hoped it would stop at 10,10:30,12 etc. at 1:30 am I cracked it. I also had been driving solidly for the x2 days and was there to get some zen. When the music is louder than your lap top you know it's loud. Room 11 for reference. The restaurant seems to have good reviews. I didn't eat there as only vegetarian was roast vegetables. Very imaginative. There was some attitude from the gym staff and gym equipment quite dated. If I were working in a spa/pool, I would say hi to patrons... anyway... I see that there are a lot of good reviews but the way the noise problem was handled by staff was awful. I left in the morning and then returned to see if anyone would apologize for minimal sleep. Would not and cannot recommend.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your review, I wish to pass on my apologies for a disappointing stay. I can assure you that we do take the time to delight our guests and hate to disappoint, which I can see clearly happened on this occasion. I have spoken to my front of house team about the issue that you encountered so that we can ensure that the same issues do not arise in the future. On hearing of your disappointment the music should have been turned off immediately. The gym equipment in the spa is all being replaced with new equipment in 2 weeks, I wish to apologise for the lack of warmth that you felt from the team on this occasion. This is not the level of service that we aim to provide and it is not the standard that we have become so very proud of. I would like to thank you for bringing this matter to my attention and hope that you will consider returning so that we have the opportunity of restoring your faith in the hotel and the service and standards that we provide. Best wishes, Jonathan

Stayed the night with work. Lovely bar and restaurant area, parking and good breakfast. Brilliant staff. Can't remember my room but it was directly above reception. Really noisy from road and staff having a smoke and chatting early in the morning was a disappointment. Would stay again but another room

The staff at the hotel are all so very friendly. The reception staff had returned my emails very quickly and we had therefore everything sorted before we arrived. The young man on the bar was welcoming and the restaurant staff were a delight.May I take this opportunity to praise the chef as both evening meals were outstanding.Enjoyed our time in the spa as the only thing not kind to us was the weather. We had a large double with a huge bed and nice bathroom.Would love to return.Wanted to take a look at the cottage but was booked may have to request this next time.xx

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your kind comments about the hotel and the team. The staff all work so hard to ensure that our guests have a fantastic break from start to finish. Please do return and we will even try and arrange the weather for you next time. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Christmas Day Dinner"

5
26/12/2017

Just my wife and I for Christmas Dinner. Expensive of course, just like all others on this day. We arrived at about 11.45 and offered champagne which was very nice. All the staff were very friendly and the meal was excellent. We went for the traditional Christmas fare (e.g. Turkey and Christmas pudding). I am not usually a fan of roast turkey but I could not fault this. Because we were not given a set time, a lot of the tables were still unoccupied when we ate (about 12.00) which spoilt the atmosphere a little but it did get better as time went on. We will definitely do this again. Highly recommended for couples or families.

Only stayed for one night but this was an excellent hotel. Good greeting on arrival. Nice warm rooms with free WIFI. Lovely Bar and great-looking Dining Room. Goof full English breakfast. Would come back again

Stayed here for two night to attend a funeral at the nearby church. A very comfortable stay and a fabulous breakfast but I didn't use any of the other facilities. The staff were very friendly and helpful and there appeared to be adequate parking although I arrived by train, the station being only a short stroll away. Loved the roaring log fire in the bar.

"Birthday spa break"

24/11/2017

We stayed for a 1 night luxury spa break! (Mother and Daughter)it was my mum's 50th Birthday on the 22nd November and my 24th yesterday. We had a delightful body scrub and massage and gorgeous afternoon tea for lunch. We got checked in with polite and welcoming reception team who then asked james who was one of the waiters to help us with our bags. It turned up we had gone in a complete circle because our room was right opposite the spa treatment rooms. We then went for a short walk into town however we missed the shops because Thursdays is their early closing day. We went back to our hotel room and popped the prosecco and wine open!! While we got ready for a dinner. As we arrived at dinner we were greeted and shown to our table. There was a lovely gift on my mum's side which was some chocolate coins and a little card to wish her a happy 50th from the team! When we were ready to ordered we asked the restaurant manager who served us whether we could have 2 courses instead of 3 because my mum is diabetic and her bloody sugars happened to be a little too high to enjoy a dessert. She was very accommodating and let us have steak without the £5 supplement for the DBB package we had booked. We enjoyed the rest of the evening in our room watching tv. The next morning we were greeted by James who remembered our room number and let us sit down. We decided what we wanted and James took our ordered again being accommodating with adding extras. We then joked about it being my 24th birthday so he goes we can have double for it being my birthday. We got up and got some continental while we waited. He goes would you like a glass of Prosecco. I said I'd love it but I am driving this morning to harrogate so I am not allowed and mum commented and said but you know our room number! And James nodded and disappeared. He came back with two small bottles of prosecco to enjoy later on! We were so grateful for the kind and welcoming team! We wished we stayed there for our whole weekend after checking into a different hotel and it not having such a great welcoming vibe! Thank you again! We will be back next year!

"Really Great Stay"

16/11/2017

I stayed here with work over two nights. The hotel is lovely and decorated tastefully. My room was a single, which was a perfect size for me. The bathroom was modern with a great shower, although it did take a while to heat up. There were plugs on the ledge next to the bed and a reading lamp. I used the pool area twice during my stay and the facilities were really good. There is a hot tub, sauna and steam room also. The pool is quite tiny, but good for a relaxing swim. It was also really warm which was nice. I briefly visited the gym, which had a lot of various equipment, including wights. I did not dine in the restaurant, bar a late dessert one evening when I returned from work. It was tasty but not the best I have had. The bar area is small but cosy, and the bar is unmanned or I may have had another drink. Noone returned to ask if I wanted anything else. Parking is plentiful, although the front carpark is quite tight. I found it easier to park at the back of the hotel. All staff were friendly and chatted. I would return here and next time would like to have time to book a spa treatment and relax further.

12/11/2017

My friend and I went for the 1 Night Spa Break which included an overnight stay in the hotel, 3 course dinner, breakfast, full use of the spa facilities and a 30 minute treatment. I have to say this was fantastic value for money. The food was very good and I was most impressed by the range of options available. The rooms were clean and comfortable as was the restraurant. The spa had a relaxing atmosphere and a good range of facilities. We both went for the hot stone massage which was very relaxing, the therapist was lovely and made us both feel very at ease. The absolutely outstanding thing about both the hotel and the spa was definitely the staff. Everyone we spoke to was extremely warm, welcoming and friendly. We felt that the staff really made our break special for us and woudn't hesitate to recommend The Dower House Hotel has a great place to stay. Thank you so much!

First visit to the Dower House Hotel. We found the Hotel easy to find and had onsite parking which is always good. we arrived early but reception checked if our room was ready, it was and they were happy for us to check in. All the staff were very nice and polite, our room was the standard room and we found it to be clean and tidy, shower was good. Breakfast was lovely a good choice, cooked was always hot and nicely served on warm plates. Would use this hotel again and would recommend to friends.

"Just missed the mark!"

The staff were welcoming and the building had lovely features. Breakfast was good. But ... no soap in bedrooms, none available when asked for, no body wash in shower in spa, shower outside sauna freezing cold, bar area not comfy or welcoming. Overall fine but for cost and 3 stars...

"Wonderful as always"

27/10/2017

I believe this is our 5th time I have lost count! Not much to say as it is always so lovely. Management very attentive to my requests. Lovely bedroom with a great modern shower room, lovely sleep. Breakfast was a little chaotic but I think the hotel was very busy due to half term which is understandable maybe have an extra member of staff during the holidays? Spa fab as always and a cosy fire in the evening in the lounge. See you all again very soon we hope! Happy Christmas to all of your team!

23/10/2017

Just had the most fantastic wedding reception here. The food and staff were amazing. However that said, I feel there was room for a couple of improvements..,,,,,,,,, the bar was very understaffed for the volume of wedding guests. The dining chairs were a disaster waiting to happen (actually someone fell off theirs at the next morning breakfast) . The bedroom was compact and soo dark , not enough lighting. But that said - the wedding was awesome . Thankyou

18/10/2017

Comfortable hotel in a good location. The lounge area was small but adequate for our group to study their Racing Posts before heading off to the races. Nice wee bar. The dining room is comparatively bigger and nicely set out. Great food. The bedrooms are adequate: clean and big enough but dated. Electric shower over the bath. The excellent staff are the hotel's best asset.

06/10/2017

Just back from a two night stay at Dower House Knaresborough with another couple. Good parking facilities, quick an easy check in, the girl on reception was great as we were a actually a few hours early, but she said our rooms were ready so we could get access to them straight away, very good of her ,as it was a pretty wet outside.and trudging round the streets of Knaresborough didn't appeal. We used the pool and steam room \\sauna room in the afternoon, they spa facilities were excellent ,and the staff on duty were really friendly and helpful. We dined in both nights.the food was of a high standard ,and served quickly and efficiently .Breakfast was also very good. Good choice of fruit and cereals followed by a good Yorkshire Breakfast, really set you up for the day. Have to say the best bit about the hotel is the hard working staff. They really are a credit to their employers especially the young lady in charge at breakfast and dinner time. The young man helping her was also excellent, giving us advice on train times and pubs to check out in York. Only down side was that the bar prices were slightly high. Would stay again if in the area.

"Relaxing hotel, great staff"

06/10/2017

Located on the edge of a nice Yorkshire town, close to riverside walks and within easy walking distance of some nice local tourist attractions, this is the place to stay. Its a little gem, lovely rooms, a Spa to relax in with a small pool, amazing sauna and steam room plus a fully equipped gym. The food was tasty and perfectly cooked, with a flexible menu at reasonable prices and catering staff who were most accommodating with various dietary requests. We met some other guests who had stayed before - one coming from Taiwan! We will be returning in the spring.

My husband and myself stayed here for a night ,we found it a lovely relaxing hotel the staff were very polite and couldn't do enough for us,the room was spacious and very comfortable.evening meal was absolutely gorgeous as was the breakfast.we had booked into the spa as part of the deal, which again was so lovely and staff great and helpful,we had a treatment which was so relaxing, pool great as were other facilities. And all just a short stroll into town.all in all a great hotel and would stay here again.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your lovely comments about the hotel, the team and the Spa. I am pleased that you found the hotel to be relaxing and that the staff looked after you both so well. I will pass on your kind comments to Victoria our Head Chef who I know will be very happy to hear of your feedback. Imagine Spa is a real treat and the treatments are a fantastic added bonus after a hard week at work. I can highly recommend the hot stones. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Best wishes, Jonathan

Went to a wedding at The Dower House .Its a lovely hotel. But only one person on the bar for an evening wedding doo had to wait ages to be served. Not enough chairs and tables around. Drinks a little pricey pint of beer and a diet coke £6.97.

"Friendly and comfortable hotel."

07/09/2017

The hotel is homely and comfortable rather than glamorous. The friendly professional staff enhance the feeling of homely comfort and hospitality. Some areas of the hotel are a little bit tired but overall it is comfortable and clean. The swimming pool and leisure centre facilities are a delight unless you are after an olympic size pool but for the average leisure swimmer the pool was a nice size and very warm! There are beauty treatments available and these are competitively priced but it may be best to book ahead of your stay - when we arrived I was told there was no availability all weekend. The hotel is a five minute walk from the station and not much further to to the town centre. It is well placed for the river which runs below the town and I thoroughly recommend an hour's rowing for a fun family outing.

"Overnight Spa break"

04/09/2017

Stayed here with two friends for an overnight spa break which was really good value. The spa reception staff were so accommodating and friendly and the treatment we all chose ( hot stone massage) was so relaxing. We used the pool which is quite small but it wasn't too busy so that was okay. Delicious 3 course evening meal - we sent our compliments to the Chef the staff where really efficient and nothing was to much trouble for them. Enjoyed our stay and would visit again.

Needing a break from the normal 9 to 5 the Dower House looked attractive and well priced. Well located in easy walking distance of the centre of knaresborough and a short bus ride from Hartogate with many shops and historical area to visit this turned out to be a great choice. The Spa area and treatments are very good. Absolutely recommended

"Something missing"

30/08/2017

I have been going to this hotel for the last few years and it has always been a nice relaxing break with great friendly staff but this time it felt a little different. Couldnt quite put my finger on it but it felt like there was something missing. Not sure i will be rushing back for a while but it is still worth a try if you have never been.

"Accommodating Staff!"

5
29/08/2017

The Dower house has its own charm & history which makes it appealing, but no matter how nice a place is, if the staff aren't up to scratch, it can let the best of places down. This is certainly not the case at Dower House. I knew I wanted to stay here for my weekend trip but when I went online to book, the hotel was fully booked. In small print at the bottom of the web page, it suggested phoning the hotel. I did so, and Jasmine worked & worked trying to make adjustments to the existing room configurations Her diligence paid off because she was eventually able to secure my single room. Thank you! My flight was very late so I didn't arrive to check in until midnight or after. Malcolm could not have been more welcoming, friendly or accommodating. He insisted on carrying my bag to the room, showed & explained everything, brought me a jug of water & a glass and replaced a burnt out light bulb in the reading lamp. Thank you, Malcolm! The next day, at very short notice, I wanted to invite the party I was visiting to Afternoon Tea at the hotel. I phoned the hotel at 2:00 for a 3:00 Tea time, and the hotel manager was very happy to accommodate us with only an hour notice. Thank you! Also to be recognized for excellent service are Will and Hannah. I will certainly stay at the Dower House on my future visits to Knaresborough. I also liked that it has parking, as I rented a car for my trip.

"Could do better"

29/08/2017

My wife and I stayed here for two nights on 20 August. The dining facilities are excellent and the staff are polite , helpful and efficient. However, we did have to complain about our room. We stayed in room 22. Whilst the bathroom was O.K. we felt that for the money paid the bedroom was well below what we expected. The dressing table had very little vaneer on the surface and the bedside tables were not much better. The whole room needs a dramatic makever to bring it up to standard. When we spoke to the receptionist she did yell us that a complete refurbishment programme for the rooms was ongoing. The manager rang us when we arrived home to apologise also. We were concerned that the fresh linen and towels were stacked on the hallways with no apparent protection from the floor carpet. We were told that this would be attended to. We have been offered a concession to return which we may do just to see the improvements.

"Visit to Yorkshire"

28/08/2017

We used The Dower House Hotel as a stopover on the way to and from Scotland and it was just right for us. Knaresborough is a lovely town and we would return to explore the surrounding area. Staff very friendly and helpful. Would recommend it for value and comfort. Food in restaurant was very good and not too expensive.

"Short and sweet"

18/08/2017

We enjoyed our stop over on our way to the North. Good four star hotel and food, friendly staff. We didn't use the spa as it was very busy. The village of Knaresborough is very pretty - it would have been nice to stay a little longer at this hotel as the town is worth a visit.

"Spa break"

5
15/08/2017

We started with a treatment and spa, very relaxing. The staff in the spa are warm and welcoming. The treatments were restful. The hotel staff are are also welcoming and polite. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. The evening meal was plentiful (not too much) and very well cooked as was the breakfast. All in all a lovely stay, would recommend this place to anyone.

"Great Staff, great Hotel and Ideal Location"

4
14/08/2017

After reading reviews on Trip Advisor about this hotel we booked it for a week and then I called to ask for a quiet room that had been renovated. We met up with family who also stayed there. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the ensuites are lovely. All of the staff where extremely helpful and friendly and made the stay even better - they are all a credit to the hotel. Breakfasts were excellent - although we opted for Continental the rest of the family went for full english and it was enjoyed by everyone. The location, at the end of the High Street was perfect for walking into town and for exploring other towns/villages in Yorkshire - try Harrogate and Haworth which are all within easy reach and also use Knaresborough train station to get into York in 20 minutes straight to the centre of York. Many thanks for a lovely weeks stay.

"Afternoon spa and tea treat"

08/08/2017

Visited today with my sister, we have been before and some little areas looking a bit dated, however a very pleasant few hours in the pool, sauna, whirlpool etc was had, hats off to the chef who provided a very delicious gluten free afternoon tea, I can't speak for the hotel but the spa is fantastic and lovely staff

"Great hospitality at this character hotel"

4
03/08/2017

We have just returned from a four-night break to the Dower House and have already booked a return visit. The staff are friendly and welcoming and our room was spacious, with a comfortable bed and quiet location above the spa. We dined in the restaurant on two evenings and the food was excellent; my husband had the duck and said it was the best he had ever tasted. Both the restaurant and bar menus offer a good choice, including vegetarian options; and the breakfast is likewise very good, with an ample cold buffet and hot food freshly cooked to order.

"This hotel would benefit from a Wedding Planner"

1
03/08/2017

This hotel would benefit from a wedding planner who listens to what is required and then puts the plans into action, instead of making assumptions. The hotel manager is arrogant and all he wanted to do was blame anyone but himself for problems that were brought to his attention, the master of ceremonies at the wedding was more like a bouncer in a night club, he was extremely rude to a number of guests. The remaining staff were very pleasant. The hotel manager thought it a good idea to put the groom's family in the far corner of the conservatory; we were unable to see the bridal party and had to stand at the back of the room to be able to hear the speeches. Coffee was suppose to be provided, they seemed to think it was acceptable to just put a stack of cups in the bar area, I had to ask for a coffee and a small cafetiere was provided. We booked a larger, more expensive room, this was not particularly clean, there was 2 panes of glass in the window of the bathroom which had slipped down in the frame, the heater fell off the wall on a number of occasions and we had to put it back. To make a drink you had to get on your hands and knees to get under the dressing table to plug the kettle in, there were no other visible plugs that we could use. The room was very noisy from the traffic outside. The hotel rooms are very quirky, which is a feature we liked when we looked at the hotel prior to booking for the wedding, having said that the room we stayed in certainly needs upgrading. On a positive note the food was good. Would I stay here again, not likely. I would not recommend it for a wedding venue.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. Every aspect of the day ran according to the bride and grooms specification. The table layout was provided to the hotel and implemented as instructed. I am sorry if you were not happy where you were seated. The coffee was available in the bar area for anyone that wanted it, again as instructed prior to the event. We normally serve tea and coffee to the table but this is not what the bride and groom wanted in this case. I am sorry that you found a couple of issues in your room but I am pleased that you mentioned them on departure so that we can take the necessary steps to make improvements for our future guests. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Weekend visiting Relatives"

02/08/2017

Stayed for a couple of nights at end of July. Arrived slightly early and found room not yet ready, as having a wedding the day before, they had been v busy making up all the rooms. Receptionist offered to store luggage. Room quite comfortable (room 7), but not for the infirm, as steps into room and into bathroom. Had a minor problem with bathroom door, would not lock. Told receptionist wen we went down for breakfast. When we returned that evening, door fixed. Good selection of food for breakfasts, and prob best porridge I have had in a hotel to date.

"Wedding nightmares"

1
02/08/2017

We had our wedding reception here last week. The bbq was lovely and the room was set out as we wanted. That was the good part, now the bad. My parents were put in an outbuilding even though they had booked their room 7 months in advice due to my dads disabilities. The room was given to an abled bodied couple and no other explaination offered. On the night of our wedding we were put in a damp dingey room and our bridal suite was given away to one of our guests, again no explaination offered. The master of ceremonies was rude to an elderly aunt and was rude to me on my wedding day! Think twice before choosing this venue, i now have tarnished memories of our special day.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am pleased that the wedding reception went well and that you enjoyed the food, drink and service. I apologise that your parents stayed in the cottage. We have only 3 ground floor rooms at the hotel and the other 2 ground floor rooms, that also accommodated guests that required easy access, were located away from your wedding party. We were under the understanding that you preferred an alternative room to the Bridal Suite. If this was not the case I apologise. I was not aware that the Master of Ceremonies was rude to you, if this was the case I am sorry. The day itself ran so smoothly, even the weather was on our side. I would hate for this other issue to tarnish what was otherwise a fantastic day. Thank you for also contacting the hotel directly so that we are able to restore your faith in us. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Wedding Day Apathy"

1
31/07/2017

Hotel is average, food reasonable but the Wedding Planner (AKA General Manager) is quite possibly incompetent. Poor communications prior to the event, schedule of events not adhered too, promises not kept. Not enough staff to get food out in reasonable time and man the bar. An exploding cafetière at breakfast causing ruined clothes and scalding was met with no concern or any responsibility from him - total apathy. I've used Best Western for years but this is slipping through the net. If average with high bar bills is acceptable - go for it. I would however suggest taking your wedding celebrations elsewhere.

"Fabulous staff, lovely hotel"

25/07/2017

I organise a two night spa break for a group of ten ladies to celebrate my daughters birthday with private dining on the first night. Long before we arrived the friendly nature and professional service received from staff member Becca at the hotel was exemplary as the booking details were tweaked and changed and she stayed completely on top of things. When we did arrive we were shown where to be at various times and all the staff were excellent. Luke, the spa manager was simply brilliant and efficient and Alison, the hotel manager in training was helpful and friendly and looked after our group very well. However the stand out staff have to be Becca from reception and James from the restaurant (although the roles appear quite fluid). This pair of unique and wonderful characters went above and beyond in every detail, from dressing and decorating our private dining room to serving food with flair and appropriate comedy, to helping us feel relaxed and accommodated with every little request. The hotel is quaint and old with bags of character, the rooms are clean and fresh although clearly lacking some of the mod cons in higher star/more contemporary places (minibar/safe/iron etc). The hot water failed in several of the rooms on the second day and the spa was only about 80% in service as the pool was ultra cool and the jacuzzi jets didn't work. But this didn't spoil things too much. The hotel is literally a few minutes walk from the train station and sandwiched conveniently for town uphill and riverside downhill. Location couldn't be better. Parking facilities were excellent. Of particular note is the superb quality of food both on both the a la crate and breakfast menus. A very varied choice and delicious hot fresh dishes full of flavour. The afternoon tea provided by the spa was slightly less impressive but still enjoyable (sandwich choices poor and salad swimming in honey dressing, but decent quality). despite a few small hiccups everyone in our group said they would definitely return to this hotel and some are already planning another trip. Knaresborough is a truly lovely place to visit and this hotel, thanks to the staff, make it the only place to stay. Thanks guys for a lovely set of birthday memories we can treasure x

20/07/2017

Arrived at best western dower house and was given room 25. A huge room and had recently been decorated it was lovely. All the staff were wonderful. James in the restaurant on the night suggested I took a bottle of water back to my room after dinner. A nice touch Christine in the spa lovely as ever. The food was lovely and I am coming back again in November. The only thing I had a problem with was the monsoon shower it was either too hot or cold for me. Not a problem really though as I could use changing room shower Thanks again for a wonderful stay

We've been staying at this hotel as part of a group of 6 adults for few years. Our latest visit was the weekend 14-16 July 2017. We had a most enjoyable stay. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The food was nicely cooked and presented. The rooms were clean and tidy and our room had been recently renovated. All in all, good value and such a pleasant experience that we've booked again for next year.

Lovely Hotel in a lovely setting, close to town centre, plenty of walks, pubs, cafes and shops. The room was very small but clean and adequate for an overnight stop. It was very close to the main entrance to the Hotel so could be quite noisy at times. We attended a dinner and disco, the food was great. The room was fabulous for a celebration or wedding, had an outside space which was very pleasant. Breakfast the next day was very poor, we had to wait several minutes to be seated. There was no explanation of what was on offer, the staff were either there in abundance or none at all. We ordered a cooked breakfast but were not offered anything else. There was other things on offer but not in view of our table. We waited again for attention and in the end went to find our own butter and find milk for our tea. The staff did not speak or smile, not feeling very welcome at all.

"Very Nice"

This hotel has a lot going for it. For a small hotel it has a very well equipped health club, spa and small pool. My room was a good size and the bed was very comfortable. There are small but pleasant grounds and the dining room opens onto a very nice terrace. The breakfast was excellent. Minor gripes include the rather frosty welcome and the noise from the busy road outside (no double glazing in the older rooms). The hotel is easy walking distance to the centre of the lovely town of Knaresborough, which in my opinion is one of England's hidden gems. The town offers some decent restaurants and pubs for dining.

"Not a comfortable stay. Had faulty shower."

Had faulty shower, staff knew about it before I checked in, still I was given the room. I was offered the option to take shower in the spa. Lot of noise early in the morning as done construction was going on. Overall not a comfortable stay.

We had a very nice 2 day break. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. We dined in the restaurant and the food was excellent. The bedroom as well furnished and clean. I would stay here again in the future.

I have stayed at this hotel several times whilst away on business. The hotel is in an ideal location and set in a beautiful town, with excellent facilities. The staff here are all very professional and extremely attentive. I really enjoy staying here. It is also excellent value for money

Just returned from our spa break, I just have to say myself and my hubby had an amazing day and night here, we arrived early to use spa before our treatments, the massage was brill then we chilled out on the spa until it was time to get ready for our evening meal. 3 course meal and everything was divine!! The best Sticky Toffee Pudding ever!!! Breakfast was delicious too, lots to choose from. We went for the Full English. We had facials done this morning and Kristin was very helpful in regards what treatment was best for my skin. Overall this place is amazing so are the staff. Already booked our return spa break next month can't wait for total relaxation again!

"PERFECT STAY"

Perfect if your visiting Knaresborough, we had a 4 poster bed in a large room with a lovely modern spacious bathroom it was spotless clean too. Our friends room was very nice too. The lady on reception was nice and friendly too very helpful. Its a perfect location too only 5 minutes walk into centre. Take a walk along the river its lovely down there you can get a nice coffee too and take in the view. Its a great day/night out a few little shops to look in and around 12 very nice pubs, we sat outside the worlds end pub in the lovely beer garden in the blazing sun a couple of hours as recommended by the girl on reception. Will return soon.

"4th visit! Gets better every time!"

This is our fourth time visiting the 'Dower House' and although every time we've been has been a charm, this was the most delightful of our stays. My daughter and I are always staying in hotels but it's safe to say that this is one of the best hotels. Starting of with a pleasant and warm welcome from the receptionist lady, we made our way up to our room. We stayed in room 8, the most cosy, gorgeous and beautiful room in the hotel I think! I had the most comfortable sleep and woke up feeling very sleepy. All the staff are so kind and helpful, and they provided us with all our needs. The cleaning staff do their job very well as our room was tidy and looked the way it did when we first checked in. My breakfast (haddock and poached eggs) was done perfectly and my daughters eggs were cooked to a high standard. The 'Imagine' spa was relaxing and quintessential. A lovely spa complex. Knaresborough is a beautiful market town, the perfect place to locate such a wonderful hotel, and I do recommend that you stay here. One particular member of staff I have to mention is Alison whose customer service & care is like no other. I am looking forward to returning to this delightful hotel with my daughter for more special times. I recommend that other travellers stay at this hotel as I'm sure you will enjoy the experience!

We booked the Dower House in Knaresborough for our Masonic function. Our experience was nothing but positive. The food was excellent, piping hot and cooked well. Those guests who stayed were pleased with their rooms and further enjoyed a quality hearty breakfast. All staff were efficient courteous and helpful. I would like to give particular mention and thanks to Jonathan, becca and Alison. You helped make a fantastic evening!

"Fantastic Staff"

13/05/2017

We stayed here for a delightful week in May and the staff were the highlight of this little hotel. The hotel is located just 10 minutes from Harrogate and its position in Knaresborough near the River Nidd has excellent road connections to all parts of Yorkshire. The hotel itself is a rabbit warren of rooms on two floors with a spa at the rear. The facilities are a mixture of good and adequate. All of the common areas, such as the reception, bar, restaurant etc. are all good, but we were a little disappointed with our room. The room could do with a bit of love and attention - decoration-wise and in the provision of better quality items - the bathroom towels are a top priority! However, that did not spoil our stay as the staff make you feel very welcome indeed and they made our stay a very happy one. Particular mention must go to restaurant/bar staff and the lady chef who provided superb cooked breakfasts and wonderful evening meals. Recommended.

"Great little find!"

09/05/2017

We have stayed in a few best westerns and have to say this is the best one so far. The staff were friendly and welcoming remembered the small things you said that think you are more than just a room number. The communal areas are quaint and tidy and the food in the restaurant is lovely. There was an event on the Saturday night but they called a couple of days before to tell us so we didn't mnd. The rooms themselves are dated I don't deny, but they are clean tidy and are reasonable for the price you pay yes they could do with a revamp but for what we paid I was more than happy. Parking was a big plus also as many of the hotels in Harrogate don't have parking. We stayed here and traveld in on the train to harrogate the train station was about 5 minutes. Plenty of nice pubs in Knaresborough to visit as well.

"The staff make this hotel worth the rating"

07/05/2017

This is our 2nd time at the Dower House and, once again, we have enjoyed our 4 night stay. I was a bit concerned when shown to our room as it was looking out onto a busy road and I'm a very light sleeper, although it was a lovely room. I asked Kitty at reception if we could be moved and exlpained why and she very kindly transferred us to a room at the back of the hotel, well away from any road noise - so a special thank you to Kitty. Another thank you to Monika who looked after us at breakfast for 3 of the 4 mornings, she was always very attentive and smiley. and also James in the bar who accommodated our rather random meal choice on the Thursday evening with a smile and some good banter! I feel our room and the hotel overall is a little tired at the moment but, having said that, the room was lovely and clean, toiletries were provided and more were available when we asked, the bed was very comfortable and the breakfasts were very good so what more can you ask. My overriding comment would be that the staff make this hotel worth the excellent rating - they're all very friendly, polite, professional and accommodating. Next time we stay in Knaresborough we will come back to the Dower House - without a doubt!

"Beautiful Place - Worth a Visit"

25/04/2017

Stayed at the Dower House this weekend and would definitely recommend to anyone. Upgraded to Four-poster on my arrival as it was my birthday. All the staff I met could not do enough to make my stay enjoyable. Special mention to the Reception staff and Davie the night porter.

"Spa Break"

21/04/2017

A lovely break with friends, this is our 3rd visit to the hotel and spa. All the staff are very welcoming and friendly, the hotel rooms are clean, tidy and well equipped. The 60 minute treatments were wonderful, and the pool, jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and foot baths were the ideal place to relax with friends. The food was excellent for lunch, evening meal and breakfast. All in all an excellent stay - we've already re-booked for next year (and might sneak in an extra visit in August for my BIG birthday!)

"Total disaster"

15/04/2017

Worst night sleep in hotel room ever only saving grace we had only booked for the one night. Room 2 - Biggest problem with room foot steps/creaking floors from above, early evening till about 1.30am then 5.30am till we eventually got up at 6.45 because by this time we were wide awake but absolutely shattered (we had retired to room from approx 8.30pm that evening) Dinner was a problem ordered steaks medium to well came really well Asked for one to be changed and what happened next was really nice the chef came out apologised and insisted both be corrected, on return the steaks were cooked better although very tough that could possibly be quality of meat than the chefs fault (want that to be true because of way she approached the situation) Room small (get what you pay for), bed hard although May suit others shower dirty round edges, noises from road and people smoking/laughing/talking - think ground floor next to front reception/car park not best place for bedroom! My problems aside, hotel was cold with no atmosphere so quiet / there was other things at fault with hotel but these can be found at other places but because I never took these up with hotel will not put on this review so beware on staying here hopefully you will not encounter/ because the hotel has rectified We did speak to manager to explain and we felt that he did not hear what we were saying I asked if this had been reported before, answer was not really, he was polite and did say he was sorry for that then fell silent. so did not pass comment on other problems. We know the importance of these discussions to improve quality of stays for future customers Every luck to the hotel in the future just it will be without us.

Thank you for your review. I wish to pass on my apologies again for a disappointing stay. I can assure you that we do take the time to delight our guests and hate to disappoint which, I can clearly see has happened on this occasion. I am sorry that you were awoken from movement in the bedroom above. I was not ware of issues with your steaks, however I am pleased that our Head Chef Victoria took the time to check back with you. It is important to make us aware of any issues prior to departure, and I feel disappointed that you did not explain your issues more clearly, before quoting "Trip Advisor" and posting this review immediately after check out. I would like to thank you for bringing these issues to my attention. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Comfortable Room, Restaurant Disappointing"

14/04/2017

Stayed here overnight during a road trip through the UK. The hotel is on the edge of Knaresborough and although next to a fairly busy main road, was quiet. Our room was a good size, well maintained and very clean. The beds were comfortable and there was no traffic noise (the room was at the back of the hotel). We ate dinner and breakfast at the hotel, both meals were OK, but there were probably better dining options in the centre of Knaresborough which is only a 5-10 minute walk. The hotel is on two floors and doesn't have a lift/elevator, so moving luggage was a bit of a hassle. The staff at the hotel were all very pleasant and obliging and made the stay enjoyable. The hotel was good value for money and I would certainly stay here again, although would look elsewhere for dining options.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay. I am delighted that you enjoyed your stay but disappointed that you were not impressed by the dining options. The restaurant frequently receives fantastic feedback and I would hate for this one occasion to deter you from dining again. We do hope that you will return and take the opportunity of staying with us in the future. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Very good but......."

14/04/2017

Would love to rate this hotel higher as it had very many good points, but I have been fortunate to stay in some hotels which I could not fault at all and this hotel did fall short in some respects. The good. The food was first class and so were the staff. The room was clean but a little dated. I used the spar pool and jacuzzi, which were excellent. Now the not so good. We were in room 1 on the ground floor, the noise from the room above was terrible. I think they had two dogs and it sounded as if there was a heard of elephants running around up there. Luckily they were quiet after 10.30pm until 8.00am. If you had a family of children, or a honeymoon couple in that room, you would not get much sleep, The room was also very hot, although it was quite cold out and we had the radiator turned off. Also there was no hairdryer or body lotion, which you would normally expect. The toilet paper must have been the cheapest available as it very thin and very rough I must add room 1 is for disabled guests or those with mobility problems and is right next to reception and very handy for the bar and restaurant. All in all I would stay at this hotel again.

Jonathan S, General Manager at Best Western Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to let us know about your stay. I am pleased that you enjoyed the food and that the staff looked after you so well. I will pass your kind comments on to the team down in Imagine Spa. I am sorry that you were disturbed by the occupants in the room above. We take on board all guest comments and can assure you that we will be rectifying the issues that you have mentioned. Please do not be strangers, we enjoy your visits. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Wedding and Reception"

5
03/04/2017

The Dower House was the perfect choice of venue for our Wedding Ceremony and celebrations. The staff were attentive, efficient, very friendly, helpful and professional throughout their very long day and night. Jonathan, Alison and the team made the day very special. It was everything you could ask for. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel for a Wedding venue. First class in every respect. We had many positive comments from our guests. The Wedding Reception room looked amazing, tables were beautifully laid out with white table cloths, sparkling cutlery and glassware. The food was plentiful and tasty. When required, meals were served on hot plates. The Evening Buffet was excellent, lots of compliments. The resident DJ played the music we specified in advance, played requests and his own selection which he realised, reflected the music we wanted to hear. He said he wouldn't talk too much, and he kept his word. He was very professional. All we can say about the room is, we fell into a comfortable bed at 2 am, so tired, fell asleep immediately!!! Breakfast next morning was excellent. The morning staff were a credit to the hotel, eager to help, so very friendly and approachable.

Jonathan S, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
CONGRATULATIONS again! Thank you for your lovely comments, we are delighted that you had a fabulous wedding day and that the team looked after you so well. They are truly chuffed with your response. The team really enjoy the weddings and all the preparations for the big day - we are pleased that the day went swimmingly. Come back and see us all again soon. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Pleasant stay"

02/04/2017

We have just returned from a pleasant 3 night stay at the Dower House Hotel which is ideally situated for both York and Harrogate. We parked the car when we arrived and did not move it until we left as we used the train to get to both places. The hotel was very comfortable and had a certain charm about it. The staff were very friendly, pleasant and very helpful. We only ate breakfast at the hotel and a very good breakfast it was too. Made to order so it was all fresh and hot. We also visited the spa and swimming pool whilst there and again the guys here were very helpful. The pool area could do with a little bit of an update and the outlook from the pool needs a little bit of a tidy up, but apart from that it was fine. We were in room number 3 which faces on to the road and was a little noisy at times, but not enough for us to ask to change rooms. It was quiet when we needed to sleep. We would recommend this hotel as we enjoyed our stay

Really enjoyed my stay at the Dower house and have booked to go again in July. Lovely room and food and spa. Always able to use the pool and spa facilities as its never too busy. Paid £79 for b&b and a 30 minute beauty treatment and a £15 credit to spend on dinner a bargain. would definately recommend.

"Best Western Dower House Hotel (Knaresborough Harrogate)"

15/03/2017

Stayed here for a couple of nights after a wedding function, situated in Knaresborough a lovely town with historic landmarks (Knaresborough Castle) not far from the hotel. The hotel is well presented with bar and dining areas well suited for large groups, the upstairs areas and rooms are a bit old and feel very dated. Staff are exceptionally friendly and were helpful to us as overseas visitors. Worth staying at if you are travelling through this lovely town.

"Fantastic Hotel"

06/03/2017

We have just returned from a two night weekend break with our dog at this hotel and cant praise the staff highly enough! Every single member of staff was cheery, helpful and even welcoming towards our dog. On our arrival we were made aware that there was a party on Saturday night and that our room had been selected accordingly so we were not disturbed. They were spot on, never heard a thing, and it was a big party! The room was spacious, comfortable and had everything we needed. The beds maybe a little on the soft side for us (but we cant have everything). We didn't use the spa but did have a look round and were very impressed. We ate in the restaurant and were pleasantly surprised, the food was fantastic! And breakfast was equally as good with a really good selection to choose from. We wouldn't hesitate in recommending this hotel, or indeed returning if we are in the area. Its really close (5 mins in the car) to Harrogate too which is a lovely town to visit too.

"Midweek Break"

4
17/11/2016

Two night midweek break in November. Hotel is excellent location just a 5 to 10 minute walk from everything Knaresborough has to offer - Wednesday is market day so does get busy. Hotel is very clean and well managed. Rooms are very good - we were upgraded to a bigger room with 6ft bed which was appreciated. Public areas of hotel (bar, lounge and dining areas) are well maintained, clean and tidy - bar has a log burner lit in the winter which is a plus point. All staff very friendly and professional and cannot do enough for you, especially Alison (does she ever stop talking ?). Food was excellent - menu for dinner and bar snacks. Good Yorkshire Breakfasts. Leisure facilities are managed by a separate company with their own staff. Facilities were OK - but nothing special when compared with other hotels. Some areas, such as around the pool and in the changing rooms could do with a bit of a refurb - signs of damp on walls and ceilings with paint peeling off is not very pleasing to the eye. Some of the tiled areas were also showing signs of wear and tear. They have a silly one towel only per person policy which they enforce strictly. OK for the men but some women do like two towels for drying hair etc. Also seemed to be a shortage of clean robes when the spa got busy. Having said all that, a very enjoyable two day break and we will probably return sometime early next year. Steve and Jo.

"Great place for a break"

12/11/2016

Me and my friend stayed here over night, staff were great and very helpful, we had a meal there too which was lovely, the bar area is relaxing. Our twin room was very clean and tidy. The area is good and the hotel is only a short walk to mother shibdens cave.

"First class service and food"

09/11/2016

We (a large family gathering) stayed here recently and we were all so impressed we are seriously thinking about returning next year. for our annual get together. Upon our arrival we were not surprised to be informed our room wasn't ready. We were three hours early. No problem whatsoever. The lovely receptionist showed us where our luggage could be left securely and informed us of what the hotel had to offer and also where the best walks and shops were. Nothing was too much trouble for her. Our room was situated above the Spa, we had no complaints whatsoever. The evening dinner was first class as was the service, same again for the following morning's breakfast. Nothing could be faulted. Wish we had stayed an extra night and sampled the spa and other amenities.

"Excellent food and welcoming staff"

4
06/11/2016

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights and were very impressed with the food - especially the breakfasts. They were cooked to order even including the toast with the result that everything was fresh and hot. Staff were very welcoming and helpful - nothing seemed too much trouble for them. Out only small gripe was the water pressure on the shower and lack of any curtain/blind on the window. We weren't overlooked, but felt it would have afforded more privacy. Although traffic noise wasn't a problem, you could hear it early in the morning. This was probably because our room was on the front and didn't have any double glazing. Other rooms might be different. Overall though a very enjoyable stay.

Booked in for one night midweek as a treat for the wifes birthday .The check in was quick and efficient,we was in room 25 upstairs just before you go through to the spa .The room was clean & tidy and a nice size .The breakfast was amazing ,we had the full english ,with as much tea & coffee you could drink .The staff on the reception and in the restaurant we really friendly and welcoming. The spa was also really good ,quite a small pool ,the jaccussi was brilliant as was the foot spa and the steam room & sauna ,all this is included in the price which makes it really good value .We will be going back at some point .Knaresborough is a lovely place also ,there was a market on the day we were there .plenty of shops to go at ,and then a nice walk round the castle ruins then down to the riverside for a lovely stroll ,would highly recomended .

Where do we start! Greeted by the nicest hotel receptionist ever! Alison ?? very friendly, helpful, smiley and lovely. The effort she put in with our 5 year old daughter Maddie was outstanding from the minute we walked in to when we left, Maddie adored her! Kerry and Jonathon were superb hosts nothing was too much trouble the whole team are a credit to you both. Felt a little sad leaving but we will definitely be back. Fantastic.

"Lovely stay"

13/10/2016

The core of the hotel is the old manor house and this has been extended to accommodate newer rooms. Our room was in the old building and was lovely and had lots of character with low wooden beams and a creaky floor. The room was large with a large bathroom and all the usual amenities. The slight downside was the temperature of the room, even in October we needed a fan to sleep. Also the water pressure in the shower was poor but other than that we had a lovely stay. The breakfast was plentiful and delicious, the best porridge I have ever tasted! There was a choice of continental buffet and then cooked breakfast to order. The hotel is about 3 minutes walk to Old Mother Shiptons cave (which is worth a look) and about 5-10 mins to the main town and restaurants. The restaurant in the hotel was very tasty but a little pricey. However I would highly recommend the afternoon tea, the scones were warm and delicious and there was plenty to eat! The Imagine spa was ok to spend a few hours in, however it was quite small and there was not that much to do, just a Jacuzzi, steam room, sauna and a swimming pool, there was only one foot spa working, however it is free to hotel guests so we cant complain!

"Great for a relaxing break"

10/10/2016

Hotel on main road but had no problems with traffic noise, plenty of parking at the hotel. Room large and clean. Food excellent, nice small bar and large lounge you can take your drinks into. Pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room area clean did say in hotel info should get gown and slipper all we got was a towel each but that's not a complaint just an observation. We had a massage in the spa which was excellent DONOT stay without using the spa facilities. The staff were brilliant efficient and friendly. Would definitely stay here again.

"Excellent facilities. Food great."

09/10/2016

This hotel is in a handy location around 5-10 minutes walk of Knaresborough town centre and would be a great base if visiting either Harrogate or York, both of which are a short drive or rail trip away (I'd recommend the train to York to avoid the parking pains) The hotel is pet-friendly charging a nominal amount for your pooch to stay with you. There are also some great walks along the (very) nearby Nidd Gorge to exercise both dog and owner. We stayed in one of the ground floor annexe rooms adjacent to the hotel reception entrance. This was a bit smaller than I was expecting for a double in a hotel in this price bracket - I noticed this particularly when trying to find a flat surface to put the room service tray on! This room is also probably ready for a refresh (carpet marked, fittings a little old and tired). Nonetheless, it was otherwise clean and comfortable. As others have noted, the rooms here are warm (even with the heating off) which is great in October but might be an issue in warmer months. Dining and room service is available and both are of a very good quality. The full-English breakfast options will certainly set you up for the day. As far as I could tell, all the hot food is cooked to order, no dried out bacon or rock hard eggs in evidence. On-site bar with a reasonable selection of drinks. You are literally only a few minutes walk from the market place area of Knaresborough which has plenty more dining and refreshment options if you want an evening away from the hotel. Al the staff we encountered were most friendly and helpful, even the dog got a greeting. Overall. We'd certainly stay again for the excellent food and serivce.

"Great Hotel"

29/09/2016

Well it's a Best Western, so very clean, nice staff, food well just brilliant (breakfast & dinner). In a good location for local attractions and buses every 9 mins to Harrogate. Bedroom large and very comfortable but 10.5 tog duvet to hot so asked housekeeping for just a sheet, it was in the room before we got back from breakfast, ensuite nice and large, modern, plenty of hot water. Staff all very helpful (but then theres Alison (receptionist) Yorkshire lass blunt as they come BUT very funny with it, a great asset to the Hotel. We only stayed 3 nights (family reunion) but would happily use this Hotel to explore North Yorkshire. Regards Steve.

"A good base for a golf party"

4
21/09/2016

Stayed here in early Sept with 19 golfers, booked by White Rose Golf Breaks. The location is perfect for several golf courses in the area. Rooms were more than adequate and the pool and spa very welcome after a days golf. Breakfast was good. We didn't eat in the restaurant but it's location 5 mins from the town centre meant we were in easy reach of plenty of eating houses and pubs. Plenty of free parking too.

"Enjoyable stay"

14/09/2016

Didn't realise when I booked that I had access to the Spa. Great to have a sauna, a steam and a swim after breakfast. The breakfasts were really well done - made to order. Room was clean and tidy. Music played in the restaurant kept me awake in the early hours though.

"Quirky"

08/09/2016

We enjoyed our stay very much. It is a very old, interesting building. The room was comfortable and clean but very warm. The fan was on a 2 hour timer so my friend had to keep getting up in the night to switch it back on again. The grounds are lovely, the food was good and the staff were excellent. Pleasant, knowledgable and helpful. If you like clinical, modern, sleek and spacious, this is not the place for you. If you like cozy, friendly and different, this is the place. Very handy for the town shops, market, pubs and buses to Harrogate.

"Lovely hotel with easy access to town and ample parking"

08/09/2016

I generally like Best Western hotels and this was no exception. Clean and comfortable, fantastic breakfast, swimming pool and a quiet relaxing lounge area. The free WiFi worked well and all the staff we met were most helpfull. This hotel is ideal for touring the area and it is only a five minute walk into the town centre.

Jonathan S, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for lovely comments about the hotel and the team. The hotel is ideally located for exploring the local town and is centrally located for visiting Harrogate, York and Leeds. If you are the more adventurous type, we are less than an hours drive to both the North Yorkshire Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks. Next time you are in the area, please remember where we are, we enjoy your visits. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Good location, reasonable accomodation"

05/09/2016

This is a hotel well placed to explore the town. There is ample parking which is free so that is a good start. We had a standard room which was reasonable but maybe needed a little love and attention to justify the price. The bed was reasonably comfortable and we had a good nights sleep. The shower was ok and the room clean. The bar was expensive but there are plenty of good pubs within easy walking distance. Breakfast was good and good portions too. Maybe a 3.5 stay.

"Spa & afternoon tea"

3
31/08/2016

I enjoyed a spa and afternoon tea with a friend. I received an email for an offer and thought it was worth a go! One 30 minute treatment was included, there was a good choice of treatments available, my friend and I had a massage. We ended up in a double room, good job we didn't mind, but weren't asked if it was ok. We then had afternoon tea on the terrace, which was very peaceful and the weather was good. There were lots of cakes and a scone each, we could have done with a few more sandwiches and less cakes! I took the leftover cakes home for the kids!! Next, to the spa, the relaxation room was small, hot and the chairs were not the most comfortable. The pool was small but ok, the jacuzzi was lovely an warm, I didn't try the sauna or steam room. There were 3 chairs and 3 beds (very uncomfortable) by the pool. Overall it was ok, could do with more comfortable seating. Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Lovely hotel. We stayed in the old part in room 4. Room lovely and clean, gorgeous sash windows. Breakfast superb. Evening meal okay, was slightly disappointed to find a piece of bone in my chicken breast but the staff were very good and kindly gave us a round of drinks on the house. Friendly welcome on reception. Spa facilities lovely. Would definitely book again.

Very pleased with our well presented, clean and spacious room. Big comfortable bed, good shower. Quiet hotel - we enjoyed an undisturbed nights sleep. Great location and within walking distance of pretty park and boating river. Breakfast and dinner was good value and delicious, though the scrambled eggs were a little overdone for my liking. Staff were all attentive and efficient. Lovely welcome given to our dog.

If I could give this hotel more than 5 I would. We had a over night stay spa break with a group of 10 friends for a friend birthday the hotel, food, spa and staff was all amazing they couldn't do enough for us the food was beautiful and the spa and room was lovely it was definitely worth the money we had are own private dinning room with hostess that could do enough for us nothing was too much trouble for them will certainly recommend and will definitely be returning In the future well done to all the staff for making it an enjoyable stay would definitely give more than 5* if I could

Fantastic deal bought in group on and this did not disappoint. On arrival we found that there is lovely cafe and we were offered hot drinks on arrival . We spent a few hours in the gym - not massive but everything you need ! Changing rooms again not massive but fine for what you need . We had robes and towels provided along with slippers. The sauna and steam room is very hot !! Great jacuzzi !! And found the relaxation room a lovely pit stop before the treatment. Prior to the spa day we looked online to see what was on offer for lunch however we struggled to find the lunch menu online. The back massage was amazing as a treatment and staff all friendly. Very good day in all

"superb restaurant"

22/08/2016

Good location, friendly helpful staff. excellent public rooms - bar, lounge, outside terrace/garden and superb restaurant "Storm". Plenty of parking, easy walk into town, beautiful riverside walks. Good rail/bus links to local towns (Leeds, Harrogete, York). Disappointing bedrooms in annex - small, dark & dated but clean.

"Spa visit"

22/08/2016

The spa is average and the facilities look jaded. Staff are friendly. Basics are minimal eg only 1 towel per customer - to use for swimming and showering, items not replenished in changing rooms - bags for swimming clothes etc. The ' fire and ice' experience was disappointing as I thought it would be more than a sauna/ steam room and a bowl of ice! The swimming pool and jacuzzi are nice although limited seating around pool. The relaxation room is fine although cramped and cluttered.

Had a lovely stay at this hotel.Booking in was quick reception staff very friendly. Our room was great-very clean bathroom lovely and clean.Used the spa which I have to say is great. We go to a lot of spa hotels and sometimes the spa part of the experience isn't great but in this instance its a real treat-very clean and super relaxing.Had a great dinner food delicious and waitress was so friendly-same again for breakfast the next morning.I would happily book this hotel again and certainly as it is a short walk into the town it is in a great location.

"Don't judge a book by it's cover"

Although charming from the outside, the interior leaves a bit to be desired. The public areas are not too bad but the rooms are old and in need of an upgrade. Some rooms had modernised bathroom facilities but not all. Cleanliness of the rooms left a lot to be desired. Upon our arrival we found biscuit crumbs on the floor and a used cotton wool bud. Not exactly how we expected to find it. The reception staff were awful and could do with taking a course in politeness, attentiveness and smiling at the customer. Unless you want to be in the heart of Knaresborough I would recommend finding a better quality hotel outside of town.

"Beautiful, cosy hotel"

Originally having planned a trip to Harrogate, I'm so glad that we chose to stay in Knaresborough instead as it's a much more picturesque and old fashioned town than Harrogate. The hotel was beautifully decorated, facilities were fabulous, and staff were super friendly and relaxed. Particularly a lady on reception who told us she was previously known as "Jellybean". I expected the hotel to be miles out of town but it was 5-10 mins walk from the town/village centre which was really handy as it meant you can both have a drink rather than one person driving. The hotel had a lovely style of wooden beams, fire and armchairs mixed with modern touches. All staff were very friendly and eager to please. The bar was great and evening meal and breakfast was wonderful. I would say the breakfast was a little dear at £11 for continental (coffee, cereal and toast) but that's what you'd expect in an upmarket spa hotel. Wetherspoons is 5 mins away if you'd like something different. The spa had everything you'd expect, Jacuzzi, pool, foot spa, monsoon shower, sauna and steam room, however it would have been nicer if the spa area had a little decoration or perhaps some fairy lights as it seemed a little plain. Our hotel room was upstairs and right before the door to the spa and massage rooms. The room was very nice however I would have expected maybe a little fancier toiletries in the bathroom and the twin beds pushed together were really uncomfortable to sleep on with the line in the middle. I understand this is common practice in hotels but with £120 compared to the £40 per night I've paid for travel lodges which have a solid double bed, it would have been nicer. We also found it unbelievably hot both nights, even with the window down. We had put this down to it being a warm weekend (20C ish so not a heatwave) but after reading other reviews I wonder if it's this area of rooms near the spa which are rather hot.

"Lovely stay."

Lovely hotel, friendly staff......bit of an error with our booking as we had booked for myself, my husband and our 16 yr old son who is 6ft tall and on arrival we had been given a room with three beds normally this would be fine however the third bed was a fold up bed only suitable for a small child......we spoke to the receptionist who gave us a single room for him. The bar area was very welcoming with log burner. The restaurant also very nice, lovely breakfast and good choice on the menu for evening meals which we enjoyed on our first night. The pool area is only small but adequate with sauna, steam room and foot spa. The hotel is in a great location. We are going back in October.

"Not worth the money"

10/08/2016

The staff at this hotel are very friendly and the food was really very good, however the hotel room massively let this place down. I had possibly the worst nights sleep I'd had all year, mainly down to the fact the room was like a sauna. Now I've slept in hot hotel rooms but never have I laid awake all night sweating more than I did in the spa's sauna. All windows were open and a fan was on full blast all night. The bathroom light initially wasn't working to which the hotel brought up 3 camping lights! They finally got he light working, however we later discovered you can't have the bathroom light on without the bedroom light on. Not ideal when you are sharing a room. We complained in the morning and weren't really taken that seriously. The receptionist said that they always get complaints about the room being too hot and they were well aware of the light issue. They knocked off a £22 bottle of wine from our bill, but on reflection it just doesn't seem enough. My friend and I paid £145 each for a one night spa break. The 30 minute treatment was lovely, and although the spa was small it was clean and nice. What should've been a nice relaxing night away turned into a missed nights sleep and feeling generally rough the next day.

06/08/2016

Lovely looking country house style hotel, generally friendly staff & enjoyable, well cooked breakfast. The negatives - a bit tired. Could do with generally refreshing, not great to find hairs in the bath on arrival, for the bathroom door handle to fall off & not be fixed or for spare copies every room key to be left out on a window sill in the corridor whilst cleaning takes place. The hotel does have a restaurant & is obviously popular for weddings. On the first night, there was the usual amount of noise but nothing too untoward - we heard people returning to their rooms a little noisly & slamming doors but that's about it. On the second night it was horrendous. The people next door had obviously had a falling out & various inebriated friends came hammering & hollering on their door & a couple of times on hours. It went on for a very long time. Whilst I realise the hotel can't control the behaviour of their guests, it should have been addressed and the people moved away from the corridors. To be frank it was intimidating, particularly with small children in the room - I'd have called down to reception but was worried about being overheard as they were aggressive at times. There's no way they can have been unaware & the next morning I was brought a complimentary newspaper to the room - family on the other side of the hotel were not so I strongly suspect they mush have been aware. Upon check out & departure it would have been polite to have been asked about my stay & I'd have addressed the above, but it was very perfunctory & no such enquiries were made. Disappointing.

"Not as expected"

03/08/2016

The outside of the hotel is very beautiful and has a countryside feel as shown in pictures despite being very conveniently located in town and close to many local attractions. Upon arrival we had a lukewarm greeting at the reception desk (as well as a less-than-friendly departure) although check-in was very efficient. The rooms that I and my family stayed in we're not as expected, obviously some of the last rooms to be renovated in the hotel, and were very dated and not up to cleanliness standards. My mattress needed replacing as was very saggy. In another room we found a used cotton bud and biscuit crumbs on the side upon arrival. The gym and pool were of a good standard and are a great added bonus to the hotel experience. Breakfast was as expected and tasty and, although service could have been slightly more efficient, the restaurant staff were friendly. Overall, I wouldn't recommend this hotel. Based on the room that I had, I feel that there is better out there but small improvements could make this hotel stand out.

My friends and I and came to the Dower House for a 2 day spa break. The staff gave us a warm welcome And were very friendly, nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were very hot and rather tired. Though they were very clean . Pre dinner drinks were very reasonable. Our evening meal was lovely with very good service. The portions were generous. Breakfast was lovely with a lot of variety. The service was very good We all enjoyed our treatments which were included in the deal.

"Knaresborough stay for Harrogate show"

3
20/07/2016

Booked here as much cheaper than the Best Western in Harrogate. Didn't get to use the facilities as no time. Staff all very helpful and happy, breakfast was nice. Bit of noise first night from what sounded like somebody trying to park a helicopter but was so tired fell asleep anyway, shower control in room was very stiff so stiff in fact I didn't think it was working and had a bath the first morning!

"A lot of positives"

14/07/2016

Knaresborough is a beautiful place and this hotel is within a reasonable walking distance of the station. The part I was in was an old fashioned building, but the room was large and well appointed. It was in the front and there is some noise from the A59, although I was not disturbed. The WiFi worked well which is not always the case in hotels. I had a mixed experience with dinner. The food was excellent: I had chicken liver parfait, sea bass and a particularly good Belgian chocolate truffle. However, the service was mixed, although the dishes did arrive promptly. I had booked before by e-mail, but when I arrived in the restaurant I was surprised to be shown to a table for four by the young waiter when there were tables for one. No menu arrived and it eventually transpired that they thought that others were joining me. Anyone can make a mistake, but the waitress was then quite cold to me while being friendly to the other tables. It wasn't my fault!

Arrived in late afternoon and walked the dogs down by the river. Had a super meal in the Lounge which was a very high standard. Rooms very clean although noisy due to the proximity of the road. The staff were absolutely brilliant especially Becca and Jack who made our stay special. Would stay again.

06/07/2016

I have visited the Dower regular for work at least one a month from 1 night to a week this last year, It dawned on me that I have never written a review on the hotel or staff. Nothing is ever too much trouble, because of the hours I work I tend to arrive back at the hotel after work go for a run or in the gym order my tea and they allow me to have it in my room. The rooms are lovely I tend to stay in room 7 unless 31 is free. There is everything I need for my stay, clean room, fresh bedding, comfortable beds, tea / coffee facilities walk in showers etc. The staff go the extra mile to ensure you have a fabulous stay and genuinely happy to ask how your day has gone... I have noticed all ages stay at the hotel which is nice to see. lovely to stay if you want to get away for the night and have a walk into Knaresborough / down the waterside or into Harrogate.

"Conveniently located"

4
05/07/2016

The Dower House is just a five minute walk from the River Nidd, Mother Shipton's Cave and the railway station, with frequent trains to York and Harrogate. Our room was situated on the first floor at the rear of the hotel so was very quiet at night. It was clean and comfortable, with plenty of lights, but unfortunately they were of a very low wattage. This coupled with the fact that the bedside lamps were made of a dark material made reading impossible. The room had had a refreshment tray, and the hotel also offered a jug of fresh milk to accompany if requested. There is plenty of parking available at the hotel, and the town centre with its numerous shops and restaurants is just a few minutes walk away.

"Nice, clean hotel with friendly staff"

23/06/2016

What I expected from a hotel: clean room & bathroom. But what is standing out in this hotel is the friendliness of the staff! Especially the receptionist! I would definitely stay here again. Walking distance to the city center. A bonus is the restaurant, when late arrival and there is ample parking space. Very good hotel for business travellers and people on the move!

I was so pleased with everything about dowerhouse. From start to finish. Planning a preparation jonathan was fantastic. Tailored our wedding to everything we needed. Room dressed to look amazing. Fantastic outside space for drinks. Master of services was great. Everything ran smoothly. Everyone commented on how tastey the food was and how it was a perfect intimate wedding venue. Thanks to everyone at Dowerhouse. Would definitely recommend. Xx

We had a really lovely visit to your spa. The staff were friendly and could not do enough for us making our visit very enjoyable. I had the lava stones massage which was amazing and then had gel nails which I was very happy with. The spa itself was very clean and the fire and ice experience was lovely. The lunch we had was also delicious. The hotel room was lovely and the bed was comfortable. The hotel staff were friendly and happy to help. I couldn't recommend this place enough and we will definitely be back!

"Excellent staff"

19/05/2016

Just had a few days at this lovely hotel. Nothing was to much trouble for the staff I encountered there. The receptionist was very helpful with a few problems about my room and promptly arranged for the housekeeper to move my things to a new room. There was a wedding at the hotel my last night and even though there was quite lively music I was not disturbed in my room. Breakfast staff are very attentive with refills of coffee and tea and extra toast if you so wish. Special diets are well provided for. I would recommend and will return to the hotel.

This is a comfortable hotel in the best sense of the word.It is in a lovely old building but with modern facilities. Staff very helpful and efficient. Nice garden in hot weather. It is out of the main town but only minutes walk to this lovely market town. It is our preferred stop on our visits north.

Thank you for your review. I am pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us during your recent visit to see friends. The sun terrace is a fantastic spot to enjoy a tipple on a hot summers day. We have some great plans for the gardens this summer. We do hope that you will return and see us all again soon. Best wishes, Jonathan

13/05/2016

I have been to this hotel several times. A few years ago it was okay however in the last couple of years it has become excellent. The food is great, I particularly like the breakfast which isn't a buffet. However you can literally order as much as you like and it is cooked fresh and presented beautifully . Monika is always a delight and greets you warmly in the morning. It also has an excellent gym , the wifi is good and the rooms are comfortable. What's not to like.

12/05/2016

Having stayed here before I decided to stay again for a funeral in the area. On arrival I was greeted in a friendly manner and given the keys to my room. Unfortunately there was a couple of issues with the room unlike my previous visit which was enjoyable. I brought the issues to the attention to the receptionist and the manager who acted quickly to resolve the issues. Would I stay here again yes most definately for the convenience to everything that Knaresborough has to offer.

"Best place in town"

11/05/2016

Visiting Yorkshire for a cycle weekend. Chose this hotel as can use Tesco vouchers. Walked around Knaresborough and had a couple of drinks but the town is a bit of a dump. So ended up drinking and eating in the hotel, good good food, attentive staff and nice ambiance. Rooms are good too, and they did us a special breakfast as we were leaving early. If staying here, stick with the hotel and don't bother with the town.

"Fantastic hotel and staff"

Me and my partner came here on the 29th and we saw the hotel only had 3 stars so we was abit worried but how wrong we was! The lady on the reception was lovely and very helpful. We had the 4 poster bed and it was gorgeous ( abit creaky ) but we didn't have anyone next door so it was fine. I would highly recommend this hotel! My partner went for a massage in the spa and really enjoyed it aswell! I proposed to my partner that night and she said yes so it was a fantastic weekend ????

I checked into the Dower House Hotel and Spa, an overnight stay prior to a local conference. I must say I was pleasantly surprised. I paid less than £50 for the night. Very clean hotel. The shower room was beautiful and had very powerful and invigorating hot shower. Ok, the water took a few seconds to warm up, so what it was well worth the wait! Also free Wi-Fi which worked faultlessly. Thank you Dower House, I will be back.

The food was quite good and waiting staff friendly and accommodating. However the bar staff were incredibly rude, slow and unfriendly. Also, not once did I but the same drinks and them be the same price??? I was not the first to notice this-other friends who visited previous said the same thing. Needs looking into....

"Good Location"

28/04/2016

I had a comfortable room at the Dower House Hotel, but there are compromises with a converted country house- the window jammed and the hot water takes time to run. However if you can live with that the hotel is very nice indeed, with a functional (but not intimate) restaurant and a complete health spa and pool attached. Just two points:- 1) If you want to book spa treatment, forget it. Priority goes to locals (there is a membership scheme), and this hotel doesn't plan slots for guests. They told me - seeming annoyed at my question - that the next available spa treatment was next week - not much good for a one night guest. 2) Service is a bit snappy - the staff did try really hard to accommodate any special requests we had (I had elderly parents staying with me) so full marks, but a little more empathy and warmth would be nice. Overall, the Dower House is a good place to stay though, and it's convenient walking into the town of Knaresborough, which is picturesque and delightful.

"A great location and a wonderful hotel"

5
27/04/2016

The hotel is conveniently sited for the centre of Knaresborough. A spacious car park and a pleasant walk through gardens, over the railway lines and you are at the shops. The hotel is comfortable and relaxing. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is plenty of room to make yourself comfortable for a quiet drink or afternoon tea. Our room was quaint with beams and period furniture but with plenty of room, comfortable beds and a pleasant en suite . The dining room is impressive and looks over a serene garden. I enjoyed eating breakfast while watching a squirrel enjoying his. The spa is a tranquil haven with a good gym.

"Very Nice Break"

4
26/04/2016

Booked on the spare of the moment for a weekend break. Found everything to be pretty good. The room size was quite good and was clean. The bathroom was OK with a couple of little problems, which was not a deal breaker but could be a little frustrating. The shower seen door made a very loud screech as you pushed it back but the big problem is the wait for the hot water to come through, a good 3-5 mins, however when it did come through it was as expected very good. We stayed for 2 nights and booked dinner, bed & breakfast. The hot breakfast I have to say was excellent and with plenty of choice and reasonable quality along with cereals and fruit and juices again very good. The evening meals were again very good, the meal from the table d'hote were included in the dinner rate for the package, and the A La Carte menu you were given a £20.00 credit towards the cost. This may seem a little restrictive but a lot of places charge extra for steaks etc. and we both had steaks which were very good value for the extra money and well worth a try (excellent). Altogether it made for a lovely stay and would definitely stay again. A special thanks to Alison the receptionist who was most helpful.

"Cardiac breakfast!"

20/04/2016

I booked Dower House because of the spa and reasonable price on offer for B&B. All things considered I think this hotel is good value and the spa and gym facilities worth making use of. The swimming pool is an odd shape though and difficult to swim lengths if there are more than two people in at once. So try to anticipate when it will be quiet if you want to swim rather than just splash about. If you order the cooked breakfast exercise will be needed to burn up all the calories! Be warned, the food is very fried and for me heavy and greasy. My room here was in need of refurbishment and the bathroom suite dated from the 70s it seemed. Not too much of an issue for one night but I think I would be disappointed if I stayed longer.

"Nice staff and spa. Restuarant with a twist"

16/04/2016

No hot water in rooms. Little sign says may take a couple of minutes to come through. I ran the tap for half an hour with only luke warm water. Offered 30% of a further visit, strange way of compensating. Spend more and be just as unhappy. Cannot reccomend.

"Wedding reception with overnight stay"

11/04/2016

We stayed at this hotel when my niece married and had her reception here. When we booked we requested, if possible, early access to our room as we need to freshen up and change after a long drive. We arrived earlier than expected and it was great to hear our room was ready. The receptionist when I asked her, advised us of the easiest way to get to the church. The hotel was warm and it was nice that the heating was still on in the early hours when it was cold. First hotel I have been to, to keep its heating on. Much appreciated. The reception meal was excellent. The beef perfectly cooked and good yorkshire pudding. Can't fault it. Breakfast offered an amazing choice. Didn't use the spa facilities. Free wifi, didn't even have to ask for the password as it was given at checkin. Hotel well situated for the town centre. Plenty of parking spaces. Pleasant gardens with plenty of garden furniture which in the summer would be lovely to enjoy on a pleasant summers evening. Enjoyed my stay and would certainly use again.

"1 night stop over"

3
07/04/2016

On arrival received great room rate from manager - however on specifically asking for a quiet room on 3 occasions during our discussions - we found ourselves in a very attractive room (nos 3), but directly facing onto busy and noisy main road - which was not helped by the fact that non of the windows had either double or secondary glazing. This lead to a very disturbed nights sleep. Both evening meal and breakfast selections we had were good so some comfort there.

"Excellent hotel in a lovely place."

I stayed here for work, 1 night and we held our meeting in the hotel the following day. The Staff are really helpful and checking in/out was very swift. The room was nice, small but nice and the hotel facilities are excellent. We ate out, but breakfast and lunch were perfect. Well situated in a beautiful town, am planning to take my Wife back for a weekend away so one of those rare occasions where the hotel is excellent for work and pleasure.

"Great Place to Stop"

28/03/2016

I have used this hotel now on a number of occasions whilst driving from Scotland to home (for me it is about half way). The staff are excellent, with well appointed rooms and excellent bathrooms. The Spa looks excellent, although I have not yet had the chance to use it. The restaurant is good, with fresh, locally sourced food, well presented. The staff are friendly and professional. I will be returning again, this time hopefully to stay for a bit longer.

"Excellent stay"

28/03/2016

Bar, lounge and restaurant areas really nice. Staff really friendly and helpful, Large, clean room with four poster bed and sofa. Only complaint was that it could do with a bit of decorating in places. Very comfortable bed and very quiet at night. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice. Didn't use the restaurant at night as already had plans but would have done if not. Didn't use the spa but my partner was very impressed with the gym. Would stay again if in Knaresborough.

"Chilling out day"

18/03/2016

Visited the spa with a friend for a catch up and chill out. The spa staff were very pleasant and helpful. The reception area was very nice and we were greeted with a cup of tea while we filled our forms in. The swimming pool was a good size and there was a jacuzzi, sauna, steam room, foot spas and ice. A chilling out room with drinks was for relaxing and lunch was included which was sandwiches and cakes. All very enjoyable. We looked around the hotel to book a nights stay and we will definitely do that. All very nice.

Pool spa etc clean and nice temperature. We will definetly be back. Carole and Keith

23/02/2016

My friends a I regularly treat ourselves to Spa Days all over Yorkshire. This has to rate amongs the best! The staff are so friendly and welcoming, they seem genuinely interested in making sure everything is good about your visit. We were given tea and coffee on arrival, this was a nice surprise. We were shown the facilities and everything was clearly and quickly explained to us. We were given lovely robes, towels and slippers and after using the pool, sauna, steamroom and footbaths we waited in the nice little relaxation room (lots of current issue glossy mags) until our afternoon tea arrived. Again the service was so friendly, and our afternoon tea satisfying, delicious scones! Our treatments we all scored top marks, good therapists, lovely bubbly Chelsea made us feel 10 years younger! Reviews should be on your overall experience, not making a mountain out of a little niggle, we had a wonderful day, we consider ourselves a critical bunch and visit spas all the time, give this one a go, you won't be disappointed! We'll be back, thank you to the staff at Imagine Spa!

"Short spa stay"

22/02/2016

Apart from a lumpy bed we had a fab stay at this hotel. All the staff we encountered were really friendly. The spa is small but has everything you need, pool, Jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and it was delicious (if on the small side). Breakfast was red hot and definitely one of the best we've ever eaten. The lumpy bed & pillows let the hotel down as the room was spacious and well decorated. We'd still go back but make sure we test the bed before bedtime!

"Below average with very disappointing breakfast"

Goo location for exploring the surrounding area. Check in was brief but we had to go back to learn about too many things (many of which we were given but not told so). Room was over the kitchens so we could hear the exhaust fans running all the time. The room was very poorly lit (one light did not work) and needed updating. The beds were hardish which we like but the pillows might as well have been filled with bricks for all the comfort they provided. were Breakfast was well presented but the poached eggs were uncooked on two days. Once is forgivable but having returned them on the first day, we gave up on the second.

Very friendly and courteous staff from start to end of stay. Pleasant reception, bar & restaurant. Rooms comfortable but in need of decorating. Ideally located to visit the area and local attractions.

Valentine's weekend, attention to detail was really nice, the set valentines meal was fabulous. Stayed in a large room at front which couldn't fault except for abit of road noise. Very pleasant Staff.

Stayed here with my partner for two days. I have to say the hotel is very nice and the staff was very friendly especially Monika at breakfast and Thomas at diner. Both of them were very professional. We also had diner and it was delicious. Thank you to the new head chef.

My husband decided to book this hotel for my birthday as part of the hotel & spa package which was great value for money ! The hotel itself is tidy & very cosy with the lovely log burning fire around the bar area along with the great decor! However we felt the rooms needed some attention , there was no iron or ironing board which is a general let down & we had to ask for our 'free welcome drink' which we found was wrong but generally the food was gorgeous & the staff were friendly ! Would recommend!

Excellent location for the town and river. Nice welcoming staff and lovely cosy decor to bar area. Our room was nice with beams and a lovely sleigh bed. The restaurant was set out beautifully but the evening meal was a bit disappointing. Breakfast though was excellent. All the staff were very attentive and couldn't do enough for you, house keeping went that extra mile by changing our quilt because it was a bit cold in the room. Would recommend this hotel good value for money.

Booked as a short break, could not have been better, fantastic friendly hotel, full of old charm, immaculately clean and up to date room and on suite, we made great use of the pool and spa facilities during our stay which were all included in the price and the majority of the time it was like having a personal pool to yourself. Breakfast was excellent quality and locally sourced filled you for the day, Ideally situated to take a short stroll into Knaresborough market place and castle for exploring will definitely return Nothing was too much trouble for Becca on reception she made you feel instantly at home and if i were to travel alone i would not hesitate to go here.

04/02/2016

Good location, good parking, rooms offer what you need without going overboard on style. Gym and pool good too, also Wifi. Not so keen on the food - cook needs to understand how to chose quality ingredients, enhance them judicious seasonings, and not ruin them in the cooking process. But there are excellent eateries nearby - 'Carriages' 2 minutes walk away in Knaresborough, and all sorts in Harrogate 5 minutes away.

Stayed for two nights with family. Room Spacious and well situated near rear of hotel. Quiet and warm. Towels changed daily. Very large and comfortable bed. Meals Breakfast was cooked to order and local ingredients were delicious. Good range of choice. Coffee was excellent. Ate in the hotel first evening we arrived. Good selection and well cooked. Reasonably priced too. Spa Use was included in the price. Small pool, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna. Plentiful supply of towels, robes and slippers. Staff Were unobtrusive and very helpful. This is a small hotel within walking distance of the town. All areas were clean and tidy with lovely log fires in the lounge and bar. We decided we had found a gem and will return. Thank you Dower House.

"Christmas Dinner 2015 - what a disappointment !"

02/02/2016

Booking was for 12pm - seated at 12.25pm. Table: Nicely laid out, including crackers and complimentary glasses of some fizzy alcoholic yellow liquid. Starters: Salmon Roulade: Tasted fine, presentation poor - had the appearance of ‘chopped-off fingers'. Goats cheese and beetroot tart: Luke warm (was it meant to be served hot or cold - no one could tell), way too ‘goaty', accompanying mini-waldorf salad was pathetic. Soup: Nice and tasty - not sure how that happened in relation to the rest of the meal. Main course: Turkey: Vegetables were a disaster - apart from the cauliflower, all (parsnips, carrots and brussel sprouts) were overcooked. Roast potatoes greasy. Pigs in blankets - poor quality sausage, lots of ‘filler'. Turkey - ok. Plate swamped with gravy (why not serve it separately ?) Stuffing balls were just solid lumps. Mediterranean vegetable crown: Basically a puff-pastry ‘pizza pocket' - tasted ok, but would prefer something more seasonal than ‘mediterranean vegetables'. Asparagus too hard, roast potatoes greasy, not at all fluffy. For this amount of money there should be more than one vegetarian dish available. One dish is not an option - unless the option is ‘take it or leave it'. Dessert: Xmas pud: Woe is me - what a disaster - stodgy and tasteless. Brandy sauce should have been called ‘Blandly sauce' - no hint of flavour at all. Creme brûlée: Another unmitigated disaster - some frothy, thin, yellow tasteless foam with a sugar crust. Utterly bland with no hint of the promised orange and cinnamon. Whoever made this clearly had never seen a creme brûlée in their life. Cheese board: Cheeses varied in quality - cheddar was below average - quite rubbery, the blue stilton was nice. Selection of crackers was dire: water biscuits or cream crackers - take your pick - doh! Coffee: Some brown tasteless liquid. Mince pies: Small and overly sweet. Overall: Presentation was fine. Service was passable, but not once were we asked if everything was ok and there was a loooooooong wait for the cheeseboard to be removed. This would all fade into obscurity if the food had been up to snuff. Unfortunately it wasn't even close - generally poor quality and obviously bought-in/reheated. Overall: Bah, humbug !

We stayed here end of January for my partners birthday, we booked a large double room which was fantastic and as stated LARGE very pleased this soon change when we realised the bed was two singles pushed together so as you can imagine there was a gap in the middle of the bed. did not expect to pay for a double only to get 2 singles pushed together this really should be stated before you book if this was the case we would of booked somewhere else. We were offered another room with a double bed but this was a stranded room and very small. Breakfast was lovely and lots of choice. Don't think we will go back only because we felt a bit deceived with the bed situation and this spoilt our stay.

I was recommended to this hotel, really glad of the referral. Arrived to a friendly welcome, in a warm and hospital environment. Room was spacious, clean and well appointed. The bar, lounge and restaurant have beautiful log burners churning out heat and a delightful country feel. Hotels in this part of the world are notoriously expensive and often without parking. This hotel is fairly priced, free and plentiful parking; just perfect for my needs. I have added it to my collection of must use hotels when trawling the UK. My only worry is, it gets well known and the prices rise; make the most whilst it remains such a good deal. Fully recommended

"En-route convenience"

26/01/2016

The approach and building are impressive. I stayed in a single room which perhaps did not have the attention to detail of double rooms. The shower in my en-suite did not work and I had to have a bath which was rather inconvenient. It was too late to ask for repair. The room was comfortable and I had a good night's sleep. I ate in the bar which was very acceptable.

Jonathan S, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback regarding your stay. I apologise for the inconvenience regarding the shower and I thank you for bringing it to my attention. I will ensure that maintenance look into this issue as soon as possible. I am pleased that you had a good night sleep. Please do return and see us all again soon. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Good hotel, brilliant deal but...."

24/01/2016

We got this deal through booking.com and paid £54 for one nights bed and breakfast. For that price the hotel was superb however I'm not sure we would have been as pleased had we paid the full price. The room was a decent size as was the bathroom. The bathroom was slightly dated and the pressure of the water was poor but for one night it was bearable. The breakfast was superb, freshly cooked to order and quickly served. When we checked out we still had use of the spa for the day which was brilliant. The staff in both the hotel and the spa were superb. They couldn't do enough for you. Would we stay again? Yes however only with a good discount.

I stay away a lot so it was a pleasure to find this hotel. Was very looked after and staff all very friendly and helpful. Perhaps my room wasnt the most up to date in decor and lay out the best was very comfortable and I had a good night sleep. The spa/gym facilities where all included with the hotel stay.

18/01/2016

Booked this hotel for a weekend break for my birthday in January. There was a good deal on this particular weekend so decided to give it a try. So glad we did! Room was big, clean and comfy. I often have difficulty sleeping at home but had two very good nights sleep in the hotel. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble. They only had portions of full fat milk on the drinks tray but we were offered a carton of semi skimmed milk instead when we asked to change the milk. The staff got to know our faces and room number very quickly and frequently enquired how we were doing. The breakfast was excellent with a full range of continental and full English choices. Would definitely stay again and definitely recommend this hotel. Can't comment on gym and Spa as we didn't use them.

The Dower House provided everything for us and more. We were given a very warm welcome and a member of best Western had done us a 3 day deal . Our visit was a special one and we received a tray of handmade chocolates a lovely touch much appreciated thank you .We had a large refurbished room at the back which was very quiet . The restaurant food was excellent as was the service they went that xtra mile !! We also liked the fact that you can walk easily into town and did that one night . Parking on site was good which was important to us . The pool was ok only went once . We liked all the decor downstairs near the bar with all the great photographs of the Tour de France and did sit by the wood burner a nice cosy touch.

"Perfect Christmas break"

5
11/01/2016

We stayed for 4 nights over Christmas on a package that included breakfasts and evening meals as well as two afternoon teas. We had a lovely, refurbished room with plenty of space and in a very quiet end of the hotel next to the spa. The service was fantastic and the meals were great with plenty of choice on the menu. The Christmas package was fun and festive with carol singers, mince pies, midnight mass at the local church and plenty of sitting by the fire with games and mince pies. We were given a tour of the pool, gym and spa which looked very nice although we didn't have time to use the facilities because we wanted to get outside to enjoy plenty of walking. The only down side, if any, was that it's dog friendly so we often walked into the lounge to see dogs on sofas which isn't quite to our personal taste in a hotel. We had a great stay and really got to know the friendly staff while we were there. Definitely a place we'd consider again if we plan another Christmas escape.

"New Year Package"

04/01/2016

Once again, with a group of friends, I stayed at the Dower House for their 3 night new year package which includes the New Year's Eve dinner dance. Once again a fabulous experience - friendly and helpful staff, fine attention to detail, great food. It's almost like a private house party atmosphere. Highly recommended.

"Disappointing New Year Break"

3
04/01/2016

We had been to this hotel on 3 or 4 occasions, twice on a New Year package, and had been satisfied. This time, however, the bedroom was pokey with very little drawer space and only one chair. The lighting was so abysmal, it was difficult to read. On the positive side, staff were unfailingly pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast was superb. However, on the first evening, there was very little choice on the dinner menu, and they had run out of one choice of main course and one pudding choice. When ordering wine, we were asked to buy a bottle from the bar, and one of the choices was not chilled, so we had to choose an alternative. The second night was not much better, again a very limited menu to choose from. Vegetables seemed to be limited to roast parsnips and carrots each night. For the gala dinner on New Year's Eve, there was absolutely no choice whatever. The celebratory disco was not just loud, but painfully so, despite our move from the main room to the bar area. There was a queue of other guests waiting to complain when I approached the manager, who agreed to ask the DJ to turn the volume down. There seemed no perceptible difference in the volume, and the unbearable level of noise, which made us very uncomfortable, continued unabated until 1.15 a.m.

"Overnight stay and family party"

4
04/01/2016

Visited early Dec for a family party (53) most of whom were staying overnight. Helpful reception staff and OK room - heating not working but electric heater fixed by maintenance. Overall the room was a bit sad looking - needed some TLC to bring it up to a good standard - that said the bar and restaurant service was excellent and the breakfast was fantastic - a mixed bag but I echo the theme of many others in that it needs the rooms brought up to date - if not I worry it will go downhill slowly.

"Another lovely visit to the hotel and spa"

4
03/01/2016

Me and my boyfriend stayed for only one night at the weekend, although there was a slight mix up with our reservation, it was quickly sorted and upgraded. The spa facilities was great as per usual. The room was spacious, with a king size bed and a hot shower. The room was however boiling. Even after turning off all radiators and opening the window fully all night, the heat was overbearing while trying to sleep. The breakfast was fantastic, lovely service and tasty food. We asked for a later checkout and it was granted. Again, another lovely stay here, and will definitely will return.

"Sad really"

31/12/2015

Simply put this hotel needs some investment to bring up to some modern standard. Disappointing as the grounds and area are stunning. Hotel has poor parking. The bar is small, and the rooms are out of date. There seemed to be staffing issues when we arrived as it was difficult to get served in the bar. The staff however were all lovely. Just needs investment!!

"Relaxed night away."

27/12/2015

We pre-booked afternoon tea but due to bad weather we arrived late. This didn't faze the staff even though they were dealing with a large Christmas lunch party. We made use of the free spa facilities before getting ready for Dinner. Due to a Christmas party the restaurant had been relocated to side room which was more than adequate. The food was lovely and we would highly recommend the restaurant. The hotel staff were warm and welcoming and we will definitely go again.

"Don't judge a book....."

2
15/12/2015

After hearing so many good things about the Dower House we were looking forward to attending an event here and staying over. However, as the title says; you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. Me and my partner were thoroughly disappointed. We arrived and check in was great. Friendly and efficeint. Perfect start to what should have been a perfect night. Upon first impression of the room everything looked great. We seemed to have everything we needed. Even a kettle, perfect after being stuck in traffic! We didn't realise we had to crouch onto the floor to make it. The plug downstairs would have been closer than the dressing table. We then got ready for the evening. After being stuck in traffic, a refreshing shower was what we needed! We just didn't realise that it would be a cold one. Zero hot water. We spoke to reception and they assured us the manager would look into it but this never happened.. We came down to meet friends in the bar but unfortunately had to wait 20 minutes for a drink, despite staff walking past. The food was average, however, like the shower.... Maybe this is because half of our table were almost halfway their meal before we received ours. After the food, the rest of the evening went well but heard from a few other people of similar issues with their rooms. Following what ended up to be a great night (thank you Marious, you were amazing) we were woken up a few times by an unknown noise, we eventually made it through the night and when waking up VERY tired the next morning we went down to breakfast. We had made the decision to ask to speak the manager after we had eaten. We asked for coffee numerous times and to be honest I'm still waiting.... We went to reception and they asked us to take a seat. We took a seat around the corner. After a 10 minute wait, we overheard what appeared to be the manager telling the receptionist 'to knock some money off the bill' and that he was 'too busy to speak to us'. I really felt for the receptionist. What an awkward position to be in! She came around the corner and told us about our discount and explained the manger was unavailable. We didn't have the heart to tell her that we had overheard what the manager had said. We accepted the discount but it was not what we wanted. What we wanted was to discuss the issues with manager, give him constructive criticism so he has the opportunity to rectify the errors before the next guest comes in. It's a shame he didn't give us the chance to tell him that.

"Birthday Spa Day was a perfect day!"

14/12/2015

We visited the Imagine Spa at Dower House yesterday, I had booked for myself and two friends as a surprise for my friends birthday, initally was going to book with lastminute.com but I emailed the hotel and booked direct. The package was for an afternoon spa 2pm-6pm with afternoon tea and a 30 minute treatment each £45pp, I also opted to add a bottle of Champagne which was great. The facilities are very good, the relaxation room is lovely, we all had our massages with Becci and they were brilliant. The afternoon tea was brilliant, one of the best I have had. We will be back!

"Very enjoyable stay at the dower house hotel"

05/12/2015

Booked to stay here with 5 others girls for a birthday celebration. We arranged for bed breakfast and evening meal together with an afternoon in the Spa with treatments and an afternoon tea. Firstly, I have to say that all the staff at both the hotel and spa were professional, friendly and very helpful throughout our stay. Our rooms were very spacious, clean, modern and had all the facilities that we needed. The lounge area was very welcoming and relaxing and there was a lovely bar area. The food in the restaurant was very good and there was a lot of choice at breakfast. It was delicious. Overall we all had a fantastic stay and a big thank you to all the staff for making it extra special for is all.

Great hotel, excellent staff, good food and comfy rooms. Special mention to the staff that work there. Very friendly always with a smile. I recommend this place. 04/12/2015

Stayed for just one night and arrived late so didn't eat dinner in the restaurant but breakfast was very good and freshly cooked. Room wasn't palatial but very clean and with an excellent shower. Staff all very friendly and helpful and I would happily stay here again.

"Putting the record straight"

5
29/11/2015

We were booked into this hotel for a family party and on checking the directions noticed that there were some terrible reviews. I was really worried about what we would find and even asked for a different room on arrival because it was one of those mentioned but need not have worried. Our room number 9 was very comfortable and clean and on checking with those staying in 11 and 12 they said everything was fine. The meal in the evening and the breakfast were both excellent and the staff really good and still patient and pleasant even as the Customers had a few drinks.

"Shiverig in Knaresborough"

25/11/2015

Went to Knaresborough for two nights for a wedding locally. Spa lovely, breakfast excellent, rooms small, tired with a trickling cold shower and cold radiators as the heating had broken down. Unable to solve the problems whilst we were there which somewhat spoilt the occasion.

"Good Hotel - Nice Staff"

4
16/11/2015

I arrived on a late Sunday afternoon (travelling for work). I had eaten a meal at home so just wanted a little afternoon tea. In no time a fire was lit for me in the lounge and a lovely tea was laid out. I can't tell you how welcome that was and it meant a lot to me that they did that just for me! Staff were very nice, room was good, breakfast was delicious - all round good experience. Didn't have time to take advantage of the Imagine Spa so might have to come back!

"Poor experience"

1
16/11/2015

Really disappointed with this hotel, in comparison to what it used to be some years ago. Room was not heated (radiators not working), shower not working and food in the restaurant was cold. The room was also tired and in need of decoration - not what you expect for £124 per night. The positive side was that the staff group were very good and tried to make amends by providing a heater and to change the food. We won't be returning

"Room 11 and the Stench of Doom."

1
14/11/2015

Travelled to knaresborough to attend a close friend's wedding. Quickly shown to room 11, best described as a tiny, poky, under heated broom closet with cheesy decor fit to make your eyes bleed. And the smell, oh the smell! Close your eyes for a moment and think of the cheapest, vilest taxi cab air freshener and then underlay with a thousand stale cigarettes. One of the first things we did on arriving home was wash everything we wore as it was totally impregnated with this appaling, noxious miasma, including my wife's expensive wedding outfit. And now to the bathroom. I genuinely had to check whether, upon entering the bathroom I had stepped through a rip in the space-time continuum which transported me instantly from the main room's 1985 to the bathroom's dowdy 1970. Stained floor tiles, appaling sink, hot water which took 2 or three minutes to anaemically filter through to a shower head which had, frankly, given up the will to live and exhibited all the power of a chronic asthmatic blowing through a straw. The walls are clearly constructed of cardboard or tissue paper and every noise from the surrounding rooms and corridors, not to mention the bar and restaurant underneath is transmitted in delicious Dolby stereophonic sound right to your room. And the final insult, the bride and groom had left a little gift bag at reception to be placed in our room, which the staff couldn't be bothered to do. We had to ask for it at checkout, and were greeted with an unapologetic shrug of the shoulders when we asked why we hadn't received it. No, sorry, that wasn't the final insult. The final insult is the utterly outrageous price one is asked to pay for the dubious pleasures described above. £114!!! I've stayed in hotels for half the price, which were twice as good. You have been warned.

Jonathan S, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Dower House Hotel & Spa, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback about your disappointing stay. I am sorry that I was not informed about your issues during your stay, or on departure and I feel disappointed that we were not given the opportunity to rectify these issues before you posted this review immediately after checkout. Had we have been informed that there was an unusual smell in the room on your arrival we could have upgraded your room. I would like to thank you for bringing these matters to my attention and as already discussed over the telephone, we do genuinely care and are constantly looking to improve and upgrade our services and facilities. Should you wish to take up my offer, please get in touch so that I can have the opportunity to restore your faith and so that we can demonstrate our true capabilities and hopefully restore your faith. Best wishes, Jonathan

"Therapist Kerry excellent. Best facial ever"

Wonderful. Reasonable, good value lunch, professional staff, clean. Only comments I'd make is to provide a dry robe for after the treatment, and fix changing room lol door. Will certainly return. The lunch I'd recommend is salmon salad or Caesar salad. Didn't get the promised included hot chocolate but hey ho. A great little spot, if I lived closer I'd become a member.

"Great experience at the Dower House hotel"

02/11/2015

We booked in for one night, after reading some negative reviews we were a bit worried but were very pleasantly suprised by the quality and service at the hotel. Our room, (21) had a king size bed, was bright and comfortable with modern fittings and quiet so we got a good nights sleep. The bar area and diningroom were attractive and well cared for, the staff were friendly and very helpful. We had our evening meal in the reastraunt, the food was delicious and very well presented, it was quality. The breakfast did not disappoint either with lots of choice of good quality food. The price of the room also included use of the swimming pool with jacuzzi and sauna which were all very clean and well presented. Overall a great stay in which we cannot find fault.

"Never again,"

29/10/2015

Arrived on Friday afternoon for two nights. Given key to room 14. Tiny double room, dark, dingy and very dated. Worst/poorest hotel room I've ever seen and at £124 per night too!! Asked if any other room available and was told no so began looking at Internet for an alternative hotel. Shortly after receptionist offered us another room which was fine. Checked out spa to book treatments to cheer us up after bad start to stay and was told no treatments available until Monday! Advice - book in advance. Restaurant service very slow even though very few guests eating there and some things on limited menu not available. Next morning told we would have to move to another room as needed our larger room for guests needing a child's bed put in. Offered another REALLY poor and tired room. Dirty carpets, bathroom fittings hanging off wall, chipped and wonky furniture, broken tiles etc. We had no choice but to accept this room as busy day planned and therefore no time to seek out alternative. We cannot understand how any hotel has such a sub-standard room! It really was awful. Offered a discount off our bill but not enough to make up for such a disappointing/upsetting stay. Don't stay here unless you get one of the large double, modern rooms. Breakfast was ok though.

28/10/2015

I stayed at the Dower House for a week in October. The room was great with an excellent ensuite shower (although the tiled floor was spongy & slippy when wet). The tv had a decent choice of channels, a fantastic bracket which made watching it from the bed effortless but with England playing Pakistan in Dubai most of my morning "tv time" was spent listening to Aggers and Geoffrey on the radio anyway. Fantastic breakfasts of impressive variety every morning in the very pleasant restaurant, with an excellent selection of daily papers. What a treat! Sadly I couldn''t spend more time in the excellent bar and sitting rooms or (what a bonus!) the excellent spa with pool, hot-tub, steam and sauna. Despite the great facilities however it was the incredible warmth of the staff who genuinely care about their guests that made my stay unforgettable, from recommending breakfast Blueberry muffins to a local butcher for great pork pies. Just as "You can't beat Elite meat!", you find better staff than the staff at the Dower! Thanks to one and all and I hope to see you again soon - if not at the Dower, at the Crown, the Hart or even the Beagle ;-) !! (ps Secure internet would be nice as I hate checking email over an insecure connection. pps Check out the very funny, very loud Canadian, Simon King at the Frazer Theatre on November 6th!) Thanks again for everything. Paul

Can't fault this little gem of a hotel only complaint was my tiny tired room on arrival however after I spoke to the very friendly receptionist I was promptly moved to a delightful room. "A Pleasant Hotel With Lovely Staff"

We spent a long weekend here with a group of friends. It's a charming hotel set in an attractive little town and very close to Harrogate. Not everything was perfect but there was nothing serious wrong here - just a few little niggles (like no shaver socket in the bathroom - but when I told reception they supplied an adapter - problem over!). Our room was clean, spacious and well furnished. The breakfasts were excellent and the dinners were very good. The level of service that we received from the staff was excellent.

Thank you for your feedback about your stay. The hotel is charming in all seasons. As we approach the cold winter months, just imagine mulled wine by our roaring log fires. Please do not forget where we are. Best wishes, Jonathan

"STAFF MAKE THIS HOTEL SO GOOD"

Even though there were quite a few negatives staying at the Dower we still really enjoyed it. :Location is good, 5 minutes walk to the waterside and Mother Shipton's Cave. Negatives were uncomfortable beds, room too hot (even with heating switched off) and with the windows open found it very noisy from the passing traffic. There was only one decent plug socket into which the TV was plugged. There were two more sockets on another wall so we ended up with the kettle on the floor and the hairdryer lead would not reach the mirror! Breakfast was superb, good variety, freshly cooked every morning. The evening meal was well cooked and presented, the only criticism was we had the same menu each night and some of the portions were on the small side. We had a swim and jacuzzi each morning before breakfast and loved it. The main factor that made our weekend at the Dower special were the superb staff. They were all wonderful, friendly and helpful - could not fault them!

This is a nice oldy worldy hotel with lovely staff and very good food. I was in room 1 the bathroom was really dingy, almost dark, the bed was hard and wifi had barely a signal. Needs a bit of investment in updating but the staff and food are exemplary. Manage, ment, back up your staff and sort out the niggles!!

Just like to say a huge thank you to all the staff at the Dower House who worked Saturday 3rd october. We had a tremendous night. The food was really good and for those of us that stayed over the rooms were lovely. Bar staff were excellent. Looking forward to next years!!!

Stayed here on Saturday for one night but checked in early and had lunch too. I really couldn't find fault. The whole experience from check in to check out was perfect. Fabulous, hard working and very attentive staff led by Jonathan, the hotel manager. Beautiful four poster room that was comfortable, clean and spacious. Lunch, evening meal and breakfast were all exceptional. Ideally situated for a lovely stroll along the river and into town too.

I arrived here this afternoon an hour before the due time for my room to be available. However I was told it was ready and I was welcome to check in. This was a great help as I'd had a long journey and a long day already. I was also offered breakfast at a reduced price and also a discount for spa treatments. I decided to book a couple during my stay. I was offered help with my luggage which I declined. However being offered was a pleasant surprise. My room is fabulous, Large spacious, soothing, relaxing colours and double shower. A friend arrived to meet for a cuppa and she was shown a lovely spot and the was brought with homemade shortbread. Alison was exceptionally helpful. I felt dismayed at some of the negative reviews of the dower house so although I have another couple of days here I felt it was important to write a solid, honest appropriate review. I feel truly blessed to be here in these relaxing surrounding with the gym and spa area to chill in as well. I think this hotel so far offers, a good value for money, very pleasant town hotel, with good facilities and added extras, helpful and welcoming staff. Still not the most state of the art, nor traditional. It somewhere in between and does what it says it will do and a bit more. That is very good by my realistic perspective. I would love to try dinner in the dining room and hopefully I will get an opportunity before I depart and I will add a review of that too.

WiFi awful. Room re decorated when could have done with a proper refurbishment e.g. cracked bathroom floor tiles, no window locks, 1 sash window won't even stay open, unable 2 turn off all lighting circuits from bed. Staff couldn't be more helpful :-) but VERY badly let down by chain not refurbishing rooms properly.

Stayed at the Dower House for a family wedding. Arrived on Friday night later than expected and went down for dinner. Despite the restaurant being fairly empty we had to wait over an hour for our food and then when it came out it was cold. Spoke to a member of staff & he did remove the cost of all food from our bill. On the Saturday our family wedding was at the hotel. This was miles better. The food was great and they had really done the venue up beautifully. I couldn't fault anything. The rooms we stayed in were clean and had everything that was needed but they were small and dated. My toiler cistern wasn't properly attached to the wall so you had to steady it every time you wanted to flush it. My brother and his wife had a family room which was much larger but very difficult to get to with a 9 week old baby as it was up steep steps & there was no way you could get a buggy up there. My young niece was sleeping on a sofa bed which was ok for a 4 year old but would have been impossible for anyone older to sleep on as it was all springs. Road noise was also quite a problem. Overall the staff were very helpful and the wedding was lovely but the hotel needs quite a bit of attention.
