"GOOD HOTEL"

5
03/10/2018

A hotel that has a history on the border between Germany and Denmark. Although it is old enough to set up, it has a modern and distinctive atmosphere. is located in a beautiful location with lots of greenery and the breakfast is quite rich. The staff is courteous and very cooperative to the needs of the tourists.

Trek818694, Front Office Manager at Best Western Hotel Des Nordens, responded to this review
Dear RomanianFolkArt, Thank you very much for your review. We hope to see you again at Hotel des Nordens. Kind regards Louise

"Good stopover"

This is the 4th time we have stayed at this hotel over the years. It is situated right on the Germany/Denmark border. We always stay in a suite near the pool. They are a very large size with fantastic shower and overlook the pool. I have always loved the buffet breakfast but on this occasion it was disappointing with a lot less hot food available than on previous visits. There are usually good selection of rolls, waffles or pancakes and more hot food on offer. This is one of the main reasons we stop here so it was disappointing to see it so diminished. The pool is great although not as warm this visit but it was still September and we usually stay in the colder months. The rooms are clean and staff helpful. The menu selection in the bar is a little lacking for dinner but there is a restaurant on site if you prefer. I would still recommend the hotel but would rate higher if breakfast was at its higher standard. Now it seems it's the same as everywhere else. Not bad but just not great.

Louise F, Front Office Manager at Best Western Hotel Des Nordens, responded to this review
Dear Michyv00, Thank you for taking the time to write this review. I am very sad to learn that we let you down on the breakfast, we have actually upgraded our breakfast over the past months, which is why I firmly believe that you have been extremely unlucky, an I will adress this immediately with our kicthen and restaurant staff. Our pool is all year round 28 degrees C, but you are right it might feel warmer in the cold months. We hope to see you again, and to show you that our breakfast has not in general been deminished.

So much noise that you can't sleep! The spa is very low quality so don't go there for a spa weekend. I honestly don't know how this hotel got 4 stars... It's really not worth it. At all. My stay here is not even over and I am already writing this poor review in the middle of the night - it's simply that bad.

HotelDesNordens, Receptionschef at Best Western Hotel Des Nordens, responded to this review
Dear Mette, Thank you for your review. We are deeply sorry for your comments and you are more than welcome to write us an e-mail to explain your 1 star review. We do hope to welcome you back und hopefully give you another impression. Best regards Hotel des Nordens

"Hotel is fine , but watch out for scam galahotels link on trip advisor"

02/08/2018

A search on tripadvisor for a hotel for tonight in flensburg came up with this hotel and we booked it. But when we tried to book in, the hotel had no record of us, when we showed the booking through trip advisor they pointed out that it was gala hotels in the name. This is a common scam known to to hotel chain, i was able to get a refund on my credit card as a fruadulent booking and they were well aware of multiple issues with gala across multiple hotels - If you want to book the hotel do so directly or through a reputable site - not trip advisor, its the last time i will every book a hotel through trip advisor, gala have been scamming for years when i checked and trip advisor have done nothing about it

HotelDesNordens, Gæsteansvarlig at Best Western Hotel Des Nordens, responded to this review
Thank you so much for your 5-star review and feedback. We are very pleased that we together sorted it out for you and that you got a refund. It would be our pleasure to welcome you back.

"Nice place if you book a suite!"

31/07/2018

Stayed in a suite very near the pool and loved the room and the hotel. The pool is 'swim-out', with an inside and outside part. It's huge, well heated, so even smaller kids will enjoy it. I was told it's open year round and always heated, so that's quite fantastic! The largest hotel pool I have seen in Germany. I had previously stayed in a standard room at this hotel, which was really old-fashioned, small, loud and in a separate building. So if possible, do book a suite. The hotel offers a very nice breakfast buffet. Also had dinner at their restaurant, which was quite enjoyable. As this hotel is very near the Danish border, it's clearly aimed to attract lots of Danish guests. They have a 'cheap' supermarket that is way more expensive than the regular German supermarkets around, but the Danish shop there like there was no tomorrow. I was appalled by this rip-off! Dear people from Denmark, welcome to Germany, but don't get ripped off. If you want to shop for really cheap groceries, drive a few miles further into Flensburg and shop at Lidl, Aldi, etc.:-))

"A nice hotel in nice area."

The hotel is located near Flensburg in a very nice area perfect for wandering and bike rides. It has a very nice and clean i and outdoor pool. Very tidy and children friendly. There is a supermarket close by with a lot of fine offers.

"Mediocre "spa" hotel with extremely bad restaurant"

01/07/2018

The pictures look nice, but the hotel is not a 4-star experience. The good: Friendly (male) staff at the aquapoint-bar. Decent pool. Decent room. Decent breakfast. The bad: No aircon at room. Staff generally not talkative/welcoming. Outdated hotel. We paid 272 euro per night, including '3-course dinner or buffet' . But it's not possible to choose. We could only get the buffet, and it was HORRIBLE. The quality of the food was so bad, it's hard to describe. Dry meat, that was supposed to be hot. Tasteless garniture, made directly from frozen vegetables. It was like food from a highway cafeteria/bistro, just worse! Check out the beef filet, advertised as "medium", on the picture I took. Overcooked for ages. Seriously, it was not possible to eat it. We stayed 30 june - 1 july 2018.

HotelDesNordens, Receptionschef at Best Western Hotel Des Nordens, responded to this review
Dear Ricki, Thank you for your review. We are thankfull for your feedback, it helps us knowing where we can improve. "Nice spa otherwise run down."

When Tricky Dick visited the hotel in the early 80s, I'm sure this was a top of the line establishment. Unfortunately much of the exterior and some of the interior haven't changed since then. The room (in the "Presidents House") was modern and nice though. Breakfast was good if not great. We had one lunch there which was from the bar menu and can be described as typical continental. Fries, fries and fries. The pool is nice but whats with the greek (roman?) statues? Area around the pool could also need an upgrade. The spa was quite decent and why we would return. There a bus to Flensburg just 3 minutes from the hotel which leaves every 20 minutes and is punctual, it is after all Germany. For the shopper Calles is 300m away and no less than 3 Fleegards are close, one in the same building.

I was sent across the car park to the cell block, opened the door, spent 5 seconds before walking out, back to the car. The smell was overwhelming, do not book here. Just drive to Flensburg, the hotels are cheaper and much better.

We have a lovely room, next to the pool. Everything is very clean and new looking. The staff are nicely presented, friendly and efficient. The dinner and breakfast were very good, with an excellent selection for breakfast. The pool is lovely and warm, and the day is just 3 dregrees. Our room has electric plugs everywhere, I can see 11 from where I am sitting! The internet is good, with three of us online together. The bathroom is very nice, huge shower, and very clean. Highly recommended!!

"Disappointing service change"

30/01/2018

We have visited the hotel 5-6 times and have always been assigned the room number we asked for. This time it could only be done by paying 20 euros. Subsequently, the price was per room, so when we were three families, it became 60 euros. Poor service! A four star hotel usually has a safety box in the rooms!

HotelDesNordens, Gæsteansvarlig at Best Western Hotel Des Nordens, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I do understand the dissappoitment regarding the extra fee for your room-guarantee. We have to block your room the make a guarantee for you to become the choosen room, therefor we will charge € 20. However you are always more than welcome to wish a certain room. It is always possible for you to use the safe at the front desk free of charge. We do hope to welcome you and your family back.

I always wanted to stay here, because I was so impressed with the long escalator when I was a child. It, unfortunately, isn't working anymore. The hotel was great, the spa-area was so nice and the food was great too! And it's so easy to go border-shopping from here and close to Flensburg and the christmas market.

Very bad service that you have to pay 9 Euro in advance to be sure to have a room in the main building. It is a sign of greediness. It would be more correct if the hotel has different prices for different type of rooms. The small rooms in the forrest bouilding are in reality one persons rooms. As an ex. there is only one chair and the rooms are very small.

We booked (4 person) in august and i asked to the receptionist that we want spicific these two rooms. She said yes. A week before our stay in 18. of november i called to the reception, and asked about the rooms. It was not those rooms. I said you priomised so she make it to the 2 rooms. We have ordrered Candle light dinner. We asked when we booked our dinner, can we get a table at the window. When we came there were no table at the windows for us.All of the tables to 4 persons at the windows there were only 2 sitting at all of the tables. we asked the waiter, can we get a table at the window.. No, was the answer. The food was not as good as last year. We have been there for the last 5-6 years.

19/09/2017

This Best Western is a 15 minute drive north of Flensburg. It's a little secluded in a wooded area but fast and easy access to a large freeway. Breakfast had a lot of options and ver good. We had work dinners twice in the restaurant, duck was dry and over cooked, fish was better but not by much. Eat at their lounge/bar area, much better food. Better yet, eat in Flensburg. Taxi access to town: 10 minutes to arrive and 10 minutes into Flensburg. They do have a well stocked convenient store attached. Rooms were clean and spacious. Now, the rooms need an update with warmer lighting and possible color. The Presidential Building felt more like a fallout shelter (dark and solid doors in hallways).

"Visit Flensburg"

16/09/2017

Reception slick and 4 star standard. However first impressions as we were allocated a room in the annex away from the main building was "Oh looks like the 2-3 star motels and B&Bs in France" But as we settled in for the evening the room was adequate. The sauna, steam room and swimming pool were excellent and staff pleasant and helpful. Although the building itself is dated it has been refurbished to reasonable if not luxurious standard. High standard of cleanliness throughout. You should note that there is a free coffee self service and fresh fruit available outside the main dining area as this was not pointed out to us. Returning dressing gowns from the Aqua area to the reception on departure rather than leaving in the room was a novel new experience. If you decide to eat out in Flensburg (circa 10mins) google maps is a must to find the hotel on return in the dark. The breakfast buffet and dining area and staff was first class. There is a popular shopping chain (Fleggard) co-located beside the hotel and was quite busy.

"Expensive hotel, poor service, restaurant fully booked."

We wanted a relaxing spa experience while driving through Europe. Unfortunately we chose this hotel. It is under renovation; I have attached the "attractive" view from our room. We came to the hotel around 4 pm. The restaurant was already fully booked. The staff were not helpful, rather rude. We also wanted to use the spa, but the reception had run out of gowns and slippers. These are indeed the guys who put the "K" into quality! The room was noisy although rather clean, in spite of the visible wear and tear. We are quite disappointed especially as this hotel was quite expensive. SABENA = Such a bloody experience never again!

"Not Bad At All!"

30/08/2017

I have to admit that I was a little apprehensive when booking this hotel as amongst the glowing reviews there were some horror stories. On arrival at the hotel I was further disturbed by the exterior condition of the main building but surely, it had to be better than the hotel we stayed at in Padborg previously! My fears were soon allayed. We were allocated rooms in the “Chez Paul” building where we found our accommodation to be very pleasant indeed; the rooms clearly having undergone renovation in recent times although the bathroom was perhaps still a trifle old fashioned. However it had what so many bathrooms lack - a shaving/make-up mirror! Full marks for that Des Nordens!! We experienced none of the discourteous treatment from staff members that some reviewers have complained about. The breakfast buffet was more than sufficient. The polite cleaning staff were to be seen around the establishment throughout the day and evening. We ate in the restaurant on just one evening and found the food to be quite average with not a lot of variety for vegetarians/pescatarians like myself. Nevertheless, the service was polite and speedy, perhaps too speedy as when we were asked if we would like a gap between courses we agreed that would be ideal! Nice touch! The atmosphere in the bar could become a little unpleasant in the evenings as the inconsiderate smokers would congregate just outside the door to the terrace allowing all the smoke to enter the building! Perhaps a designated smoking area away from the building - 2 kilometres should be sufficient!! All in all a very pleasant stay and we shall probably return next year when visiting the Danish element of the family.

Located just a few minutes drive from Flensburg, and in a cozy green sorroundings. Great facilities, good breakfast buffet & friendly, high service oriented personnel. Hotel rate is very fair because breakfast is included, and free wifi. There is a small Fleggaard store just beside the hotel. There is a large pool both indoor & outdoor where kids can also enjoy. We will definitely come back with our kids.

30/05/2017

The hotel is just on the boarder in a building which is getting aged with a pretty large pool. We stayed for two nights and the room was clean and ok. First night we tried the buffet which was a disappointment. The second night we went down to Flensburg which is a small wonderful town with a wide range of good restaurants. Breakfast was average and the bar food, which we tried for lunch, was pretty good (basic bar food). Would recommend it if you like to spend some time at the pool.

"Nice Hotel."

21/05/2017

We stayed here for 7 nights whilst visiting family in Flensburg. The hotel is not too bad but very busy over the weekend. As other reviewers have said, it seems a lot of Danish people come for the weekend and do shopping at the Fleggaard at the front of the hotel. This means that there are a lot of children during the weekend, they are pretty loud around the pool area and when we arrived and were checking the pool, we were spat on by a child up on the balcony of his room! This was not the fault of the hotel, but be careful walking around the pool area by the units! This can also make parking difficult sometimes over the weekend. Breakfast was fresh and kept stocked up during the entire time. Our room was a great size, especially when you are staying for more than a night or two. We did not realize how far from Flensburg town the hotel was but that's our fault for not checking too much before we booked! We had a bit of difficulty with the door to the balcony in our room, it seems the hinges were worn and almost impossible to keep it part open. The room got very hot and stuffy during the night even with the heater off if you did not leave the door open a little. Our room had a view over the road and across to the beach (hidden by the trees) but was still private and lovely spring blossoms to look at. The pool and spa are really nice, but I do not think they are as warm as they state they are on the advertising. The outside sauna is clothing free but the indoor ones are not.

"Good for a short stay"

20/05/2017

My wife and I stayed one night on our way to Denmark. The hotel is located about 5 km to the north of Flensburg, only a couple of hundred meters from the Danish border. It is a large hotel with about 125 rooms and several fine facilities, such as fitness, wellness, a very large in- and outdoor heated swimmingpool etc. The rooms are of different quality, reflecting the fact that the hotels was constructed over a longer period of time. Our room in the main building was clean, but not very large and a bit altmodisch. We got the impression that many Danish guests stayed for a weekend, enjoying the area and the border shopping possibilities. The hotel is actually owned by one of the largest border shopping companies, Fleggaard. The included breakfast was great with several good choices. Friendly and helpful reception staff. One odd thing about the hotel: If you pay by credit card (Master, Visa etc.) an extra fee will be added to the bill. Most hotels would be happy to avoid time consuming dealing with cash, but not this one. So be prepared to pay about 2.5 per cent extra, if you use your creditcard.

HotelDesNordens, Gæsteansvarlig at Best Western Hotel Des Nordens, responded to this review
Dear Sir, Thank you for your review. We do appreciate your comments. If you wish to avoid the surcharge for use of Credit Card we do have an ATM directly at the reception, so you can pay for you stay with cash. Once again I would thank you for your kind feedback. We hope to see you back at Hotel des Nordens.

02/05/2017

I slept here one night during a business trip to Padborg on the Danish side of the border. The hotel is very near to Denmark. I got a spacious room, which was comfortable. The bed was maybe a little bit harder than my taste, but I had a good night´s sleep. The breakfast was like most other hotels, and good enough. But - I ate dinner at the hotel´s restaurant, and that dinner was a lot better than I expected it to be. I did not try the pool area. There is also parking there which is free of charge.

I will not make this a Faulty Towers german thingie, but arriving tired and hungry to the hotel, we were informed that we could not be served as they served the pre-paid guests, and then perhaps, around 21.00 hours we could see if........ and we saw. Free tables and german strictness of the old school. Goodness. Shape Up, Best Western. And room info! Room 111 is in the hallway with the elevator actually IN the room. Very noisy, but at least we got our german freshened up, listening to all the people outside our door. TV had to be re-started. It was on factory setting menu, you know "please choose language.." But hotel fixed that, at least. Food? A kind greek restaurateur a long way from the hotel helped us. Not Best Western.

HotelDesNordens, Gæsteansvarlig at Best Western Hotel Des Nordens, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to gives us feed back, that will help us improve ourselves. We do not serve prepaid guest prior to others, but we do have a lot of our guests who book stays including their evening meal, and of course we need to make sure they have a table in the restaurant for their pre-ordered dinner. I apologizes that you were not offered an alternative, like for instance our bar, which also serves light dishes. I apologize that the tv-set was on factory settings, I have asked our maintenance staff to check this regularly, so it does not happen again, I am glad that this however did get sorted for you.

Nice service, average hote, good outside pool, poor training area, good breakfast. Was there for business so I did not care about the surroundings. 02/03/2017

We stayed for 2 nights here in a suite & companion was in a double room situated near the pool. Suite rooms are spacious with very large bathroom, have nice lounge area & adjoining bedroom for extra guests if required. Double room as small bathroom & small shower. Television was not working properly in double room & advised reception but was not fixed at all while there so unable to use. Breakfast is probably the best part of the stay with a wide assortment of dishes. Had dinner at restaurant on site which was reasonably priced. Cafe/bar would be nice to eat a snack at but the menu is extremely limited & needs better service staff working here. Waited ages to be served & wasn't busy at all. Most staff were courteous but not anything more than that. The pool was great but when we went to have a nice quiet morning swim it was crowded & over-run with people attending aquarobics class which ruined the experience especially as they were not hotel guests. The ice skating rink was closed also. Overall a pleasant stay but for the money spent, I would expect more. Situated in a nice easy spot to get to surrounded by great walking trails & room was quiet.

We stayed at the hotel for one night, and it was pretty average. The room was alright, but air quality was really bad and the room had a funny smell. The bathroom had seen better days. However, we really enjoyed the breakfast.

"Biggest hotel in the region, the 4-stars rating is mostly well deserved, but still room for improvement"

04/10/2016

Stayed in the "HOTEL DES NORDENS" from September 28 to October 4 in one of the so called fireplace-suites ("Kamin-Suite") and overall I enjoyed my stay a lot and will come back again! It's a hotel build in the 1950's, but has grown and been renovated continuously over the years. HOTEL DES NORDENS is a 4-star BEST WESTERN hotel, but not (yet) one of the BEST WESTERN PLUS ones. It had been a while (i.e. almost 9 years) since last I stayed in this hotel and I must admit that the new owners (the Danish FLEGGAARD corporation) have achieved a lot of overall improvement since then and (according to hotel director Thomas Baarsøe) will continue to invest and improve in the years to come - bravo! The hotel has 121 rooms / suites and even a large Presidential Suite. Furthermore there's a cosy bar and several conference rooms (in all sizes) and a very large banquet hall. Not all rooms, however, are in the main building, but located in two separate buildings where one is connected to the main building through a loooong beautifully windowed hallway while, in order to reach the other separate building ("Haus am Wald"), you have to leave the lobby of the main building, go outside and walk across the parking lot. As to the "Haus am Wald" building I noticed a mouldy smell in the internal staircase which the hotel might consider taking care of. The hotel itself is situated on a little hill (some 20 meters above sea level) overlooking the Danish/German border region as well as the actual border and is close to beautiful nature on both sides of the border as well as the picturesque German city of Flensburg (approximately 90,000 inhabitants). But the hotel is also close to a large road (leading to/from the border) and thus trafic noise can be heard from some rooms, mainly the ones located on the east side of the hotel. In the hotel an impressive amount of white/grey marble tiles are to be found on floors and walls creating an exclusive atmosphere together with the black leather furniture and dark brown wooden doors and antiquities. In 2016 it's rare to find large hotels using regular keys for room doors and not using electronic key cards ... this might be something the hotel should change in a future renovation and then also use key cards to turn on/off all electricity in ones room ... in this connection a master switch for lights placed directly at the bed would make great sense and add considerably to the in-room comfort! The hotel unfortunately only has uncovered parking lots, but on the other hand there usually is enough of them and (what's best) they are free (i.e. no parking fee is charged)! Arriving with a lot of luggage is no problem as the lobby has 2 luggage carts ready to handle this and the reception is manned 24/7. As I said not all rooms have yet been renovated and my fireplace-suite (308) was one of the rooms only partly renovated (i.e. a fine new bath / toilet area). The rest of my room really needs a make over (which it will soon have), but apart from that it was nice, quiet and spacey with separate room for luggage and clothes plus extra room for guest/kids with own flat screen tv and a large flatscreen tv in the main room, etc. Furthermore there was a nice working desk, water boiler, comfy large bed, chairs and table. Plus the room had a fine balcony with a great view over the outdoor heated pool area and small park / large trees! It would have been icing on the cake with heated floor in the bath room and if you could hear/control the TV's sound over a speaker there! Also the noise insulation of the door to the hallway could be better. I personally also missed a safe and a mini bar / fridge in my room and I don't think any of the other rooms of the hotel has any mini-bar fridge!? Talking about mini-bar it would be a nice feature/service (if the hotel does not want mini-bars / fridges in room) that they consider copying the Danish SCANDIC Hotels where the mini-bar area is moved to the reception/lobby (with a wider choice of foods, snacks, fruits, drinks) from where you take whatever you need up to your room - paying cash/card or putting it on your room. My room (suite) had ground-to-floor sunlight-blocking curtains, BUT they were not really effective blocking out the sun light ... a better/darker fabric is needed to male them work as supposed. Personally (if I was hotel management at HOTEL DES NORDENS) I would change the CFL light bulbs (in room and elsewhere in hotel) to LED soon also because CFLs radiate EMF quite a lot and are not very environmentally friendly (some still containing mercury)! The choice of TV-channels in the room was quite overwhelming (however only one in Danish) and it was somewhat difficult to find TV-channels that could actually be watched and were not coded / scrambled. It would be a great service if NETFLIX or SKY would be added for free guest use. There is no air conditioning in the rooms, but windows can be opened to create good air flow! The hotel offers room service, but I did not try that ... it closes, however, together with the restaurant which is at 22:00h (10 PM). I did eat several times at the hotel's beautiful and cosy restaurant "Rotisserie" and the meals were really of high standard and the service of waiters very service-minded and quick. Sometimes, however, it is hard getting a table without reservation as the restaurant may be a little small compared to the hotel holding 121 rooms. Nonetheless the staff in the reception and restaurant and bar was always smiling, friendly, attentive and helpful. I would like to point out that the hotel has a nice indoor and outdoor pool area called "AQUA POINT" that is heated all year round combined with a nice spacey outdoor sauna plus a "under construction" indoor sauna area (should be finished this year still). Here you also find a decent fitness area and you can book massages and other wellness therapies. I can recommend the HOTEL DES NORDENS already now and I'm sure it will continue to become even better within the near future!

"Great spa hotel with bizarre service"

We stayed here overnight on our European road trip. It was perfect for the purpose; the family room was spacious with 2 separate rooms and the pool area was great after a long day in the car. Breakfast was excellent, and even with the kids we didn't have to stop for hours for lunch. The only negative was the bizarre and even rude service at the reception and the restaurant. The evening dinner took a long while to arrive once we had already waited quite a while to be served.... But the food was good quality.

"Great place to throw a party"

We chose to celebrate my 50th birthday at the hotel with the possibility for the guests to book a room for the night. From the time we started booking the location to the actual party, everything was perfect. The ballroom was great, as well as the table set-up. The food was excellent. The staff was outstanding. The indoor/outdoor heated pool was great. Special thanks to head waiter Klaus and to our Convention Manager, Edel von Appen for making my birthday memorable.

A run down large hotel probably built in the 1970s. We were given a room on the ground floor with entrance to the room directly from the pavement. The room was located right on a large car park. No fridge/minibar, no AC. A fan was blowing the air from the carpark straight into the room. Except for the bartender the service in the reseption and the restaurant was slow, - uninterested staff.

My family and I had been travelling frol Croatia towards Norway for 2 days. After 14 hours in a car this hotel was a nice welcome! We stayed in the suites on the top level and they were fantastic. Big, great balcony and so fresh. It felt very welcoming and had everything and then some. The rooms had the x-factor to put it in easy terms. Now, the parking option was perfect, it was easy to find and liked the fact that it had a cheap and big supermaked close. We also ate dinner from the ala carte menu, and was a bit let down when items where missing, and out of stock, but the meal it self was great. The staff was friendly enough, but could do with some more smiling. Over all the dining experience was good. The breakfast was very good and offered a wide varity of foods. It was also nice to see that the options for allergic people was front and center. Wifi was good, and over all everything was good, so why no top mark? Well, the whole location with seperate buildings is not to my liking and I wished there was a connection between them, but hey...you cant have everything.

Quite noisy due to traffic even if we asked for a quite room. Building must be very old. Mold in the bathroom and smell of fungus in the whole building. Payed 200 Euro for a dobbelroom. Way too expensive for what you get. I cannot understand that this hotel has 4 stars.

"Very good value for money"

10/06/2016

Hotel des Nordens is a typical German middle class hotel, it is also not new, but it is very good value for money. The rooms are surprisingly large and well equipped, there is a large and attractive swimming pool and in general very good facilities. They serve good food and the staff seems to be genuinely friendly and service minded. If you combine this with the attractive offers that the hotel has for various packages you get the ideal place for a long weekend with or without kids.

"Great hotel as base for exploring Flensburg and Sønderjylland"

We have stayed at Hotel Des Nordens several times (deals) - it has always been a pleasure. Very nice and service minded staff in reception, restaurant and bar that makes you feel welcome. The rooms are very nice, clean and everything works. Lots of space for your luggage and things in the closets and bathroom. A shower instead of the bathtub would however be nice. Splendid food (not gourmet) and reasonable prices and a very nice breakfast buffet with lots of choices. And then there is the fantastic big swimming pool – SPA etc. Great hotel as base if you want to explore Sønderjylland and the Flensburg area (Schleswig Holstein)!

Good family hotel. We have been visiting this hotel a number of times during the past 9 years. Coming from Copenhagen and going to do some shopping in Flensburg, this is a perfect place to stay overnight. Many times we have also enjoyed to have a glass of water, this is for free, from the hotels own housewell. Service and food is good, and we love the swimming pool indoor as the outdoor. It is brilliant that it is possible to swim between the two pools AND it is great that the water is heated year round.

Hotel des Nordens is more than it appears to be! The location along Highway 200 in Northern-most Germany, just South of the little, Danish border-town of Kruså is perhaps less than ideal for this pearl of a hotel. We visited this place a number of years ago, so I can say with certainty that they have both modernized and improved the property. There is a fine Aqua facility with both indoor and large outdoor pool, jazucci, sauna (with and without bathing suit), and message. There is a nearby ice-skating rink that can be used by the hotel guests. The restaurant is excellent, and if they are given advanced notice, they can provide gluten-free buns. The people at the reception desk at friendly and efficient. We stayed only one night, but plan to return sometime soon with family members.

"Ok but not great"

Stayed in one of the rooms in the building opposite reception - good seating area for 4 in each room. Beds are pretty comfy. Shame they haven't given the place a lick of paint and updated because the bathroom and walls brings down the otherwise fresh beds and seating. Very bad soundproofing though so perhaps bring earplugs if you are a light sleeper. The restaurant in the hotel was ok in regards to food and ambience, but we had not pre-booked dinner which was clearly a mistake. (You can include a 3 course meal - not sure the salmon was great though - I saw a lot of leftovers on tables). We were seated after having to wait for close to 5 minutes before someone bothered to look our way - we had reserved a table at the suggestion of reception but it was not crazy busy. After being seated and given menues it took 20 minutes before anyone approached us to take orders. We were given some bread which was lucky - it took a further 40 mins for the food to arrive. The peoper sauce which came with the meat was delivered to the table 5 mins after the food arrived - not great. I would stay at the hotel again but not eat in the restaurant. House red wine was good though!

HotelDesNordens, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN Hotel des Nordens, responded to this review
Dear Qalinda, Thank you for taking the time to give us feed back on your stay with us. That is the only way for us to learn from our mistakes. The hotel is in 2015/2016 undergoing a renovation. In regard to your comments on our restaurant, I have passed these on to our F&B Manager, and I do apologize that you were kept waiting. I trust your experience not to be our general standard and I hope, should you come back to stay with us, that you will give our restaurant a second chance. We hope to see you again at Hotel des Nordens. Kind regards Best Western Hotel des Nordens

We came across this hotel when googling to find somewhere to break up a long road trip. The hotel is 300m south of the border with Denmark and staff told us it was quite unusual to have English speaking guests. The hotel was much better than expected apart from a strange layout where we had to walk through an extremely long glassed in corridor to get from our room to the dining area. Our room was fine for our one night stay and there was plenty of hot water for the shower. We had dinner in the very formal dining room and the waiter went out of his way to ensure our vegetarian diet was catered for on the meat only menu. There was a good spread for breakfast also. We did not use the pool area so can not comment on that. Wi-fi was free and worked well.

"Be prepared to pay extra for even a short swim in cold water"

03/08/2015

We have visited this hotel many times and so has frieds hand family. We always come for spme shopping and to use the highly marketed swimming pool and saunas. the feature is that it supposedly should be approx 30 degrees hot all year long outside and inside. This is history. The water is now more close to 20 degrees. We were warned about this before arriving this time, but we wanted to give it a shot. Unfortunatedly it is correct - the water is nowhere close to 30 degrees at any time during our 3 day stay. Other guests confirmed this as well. Note that the hotel still advertise with 30 degrees. Completely not true and misleading. Even worse: The hotel changed policy about the use. If you do not buy a holiday package, you will have to pay 5 euro to use the swimming poo per person per day! This is absolutely crazy. We bought the most expensive room with a so-called VIP package (to my knowledge only consisting of a single bottle of water per day!) - and yet still we were asked for 5 euro per day per person! This is not mentioned on the webpage. Yes, it is per day and you can return the same day, but what if (like we) you just want a short swim before dinner? As I complained while checking out the receptionist went to the manager (who not even found the time to confront me directly) and returned with an even more strange explanation: Some had complained to pay for a service they did not use. Funny, since when has any swimming pool on a hotel been charged for? Have in mind that any other services like massage etc. always have been a separate service. No, the fact is that if you buy their packages, you will have to eat their menu and buy their wine (not included). This is a much better business. We wanted to eat outside the hotel - and became degraded guests. We were told that it was alright *this* time. Well, thanks, but there will not be any next time. The hotel is by itself like 30-40% more expensive than others so there is plenty of possibilities to find another and even find the money for entrance in Foerdeland Terme guaranteeing 32 degrees water and more features.

HotelDesNordens, Receptionschef at BEST WESTERN Hotel des Nordens, responded to this review
From January 1st 2016 will all our guests have free access to our Aquapoint. In the moment there will be an extra charge of € 5 per day for using our Aquapoint.

"DON'T STAY HERE!"

01/08/2015

Like many others here I was totally fooled by the nice pictures! Don't be fooled. The hotel room was appalling. I took photos of no less than 7 different REALLY dirty areas in our room. Fixtures falling of walls etc etc. The pool was a total let down. Cold, in some areas and boiling water (yes boiling) coming out of some vents in the kiddies pool. So hot I couldn't put my hand it! The whole place needs a good clean. Totally not worth the €200 per night - which by the way ((( doesn't inc the use of the pool area))) Be warned. If I could go back in time I would avoid this place like the plague.

"Great hotel..... Some years ago."

Like others have stated, nice restaurant and reception. They did some construction work on the second part of the hotel when we arrived in June, but was not bothered with noise or anything like that. Sadly we didn't try the pool area, so I can't review that part of the hotel. I would assume that it's hard to run a hotel in this area now that the roads has been expanded and put far outside the city. We got a large room with nice beds. Patio outside with a view on the forest. You could tell it has been some years since last makeover, but it was tidy and clean when we arrived and that's what it's all about for me. I would prefer a shower instead of standing in a bath tub with a curtain though. Wifi was included. The breakfast was served in the restaurant and did not lack of anything in my opinion. The food was very good indeed.

We had a very short stay here as part of a drive to Spain. The room was quite nice, but for summer season its not great as there is no AC and no fan. The pool is great, a bit strange it has to be paid for by guests though. Staff friendly enough and offered coffee as we left the hotel at 3 am. Nice touch!
