« Great location with modest accommodations »

The hotel is conveniently located near the center of Ghent and right down the street from the church containing the Ghent altarpiece. All the sites are located within walking distance. The hotel staff are very helpful, even allowing me to check in two hours prior to the regular check-in hour. The hotel amenities are fairly basic, which is to be expected given the inexpensive price for the room. The room was a plentiful size and clean. The bed was firm and sheets/blankets clean and well kept. The bathroom provided only pump dispensed soap and shampoo. Be warned - the shower contained an all-in-one body soap and shampoo cleanser. There was a high-pitched squeal in the pipes which occurred when someone on another floor/room used the shower. I did not take advantage of the breakfast option, so I can't provide a review of that amenity.

« Bedbugs and they didn't even admit it »

This hotel is well located that's for sure. Apart from that the rooms are very old and would need a refresh. We woke up to a lot of bed bugs bites ! We checked the mattress and there was traces of blood and feces from the bugs... After telling that to the reception, they checked and found nothing, hard to believe... Even without that it's largely overpriced for the room's quality

« Nice location- horrible wifi »

This is a nice, small, centrally located hotel. With our booking breakfast was included and it was good. One huge drawback of the hotel was the incredibly weak wifi. It was shockingly s---l---o---w, when it worked at all. If wifi is important to you, then this hotel is simply not an option. Another drawback is that we were on the first floor up and were not told ahead of time that there was no elevator that would reach our room. There was another wing to the hotel that I think had an elevator, so if you need or prefer that, ask when booking.

« Good location, awful service »

Stayed foe two nights on business trip. Location is convenient and staff very helpful but the room had too many problems. Wifi was incredibly slow. Lots of noise from other rooms and outside. The first night was incredibly hot. I stayed with open window that were overlooking on internal courtyard; no real privacy. I wanted to put some water in the minibar, but to open it you needed to request a key. Bed was comfortable, but on one side it had a big hole. Hopefully they do not offer the same room as a double. In the middle of a my shower I discover the shampoo dispenser was completely empty and had to call reception for a new one. Next morning there was no hot water for the shower. The receptionist had no explanation for that. Breakfast was OK but you need to make sure not to get stuck in the queue at the coffee dispenser.

« Nice rooms, average service »

Stayed here for 3 days in the summer on business, but with my father and young daughter. The room was great - almost too big! Appreciated the bath. The TV channel listing was out of date - struggled to find a child-friendly option. Wi-fi connection didn't work in the hotel room (floor 4), and was weak even on the ground floor. The city has free wi-fi, which worked a lot better on the ground floor, but didn't extend to our room. This was a big frustration, as I need a connection for work, and we wanted to search for child-friendly places to eat (particularly when we arrived as many places close on Sundays). We received a credit to our bill for the inconvenience, but I would have preferred to have a working internet connection. Breakfast was okay, but they run out of some food on the Tuesday morning, and there wasn't any food cooked to order. On the final morning, some milk on the counter - which my daughter drunk - was off. Management was absent until the final morning - and it showed. Unfortunate, as the room was luxurious and the location was ideal for the city centre.

« Good price. Not much quality »

I stayed in this hotel for three night whit my parents and sister in a room for four. Sadly I have much more bad thing to say than the opposite: - the lock of the main door never worked; each time we wanted to enter our room we have spent five minutes trying to go in. - the first afternoon the bulb has burned in one of the room; I informed the receptionist but nobody came to change it, so we spend two days in the dark, day and evening - lots of mosquitoes - one of the two window overlooking the street, like being directly in the street all night long (sunday night) - smell from the second window - never enough paper towel. I've had to use my own tissues in the bathroom - shower always very hot or very cold On the other side - position central - very clean - big room - good breakfast The most annoying thing was the staff for the answer they gave me when I pointed out this bad things.

« It needs decorating but in a great position. »

Super staff and breakfast but what a tatty presentation! The hotel is perfectly sited for the main attractions and there are 2 car parks within 300m but beware the one way system and the GPS flat spots. It must be freezing in the winter with the old style rotting wood single pane window frames. Our toilet door handle came off in our hands and the hand shower give a multi directional jet. However, the breakfast and lovely staff were a joy.

« Pleasant stay in Ghent »

Great location in the center of the city all places are easy to reach with a walk, nice service, very comfortable rooms and available and kind personnel. The breakfast has fresh fruit and a variety of food for all the needings.

« Super location but car park a short walk away »

This is an older style of hotel, surprised it was a Best Western. Quirky would be the right phrase. Tiny elevator, good room size since I got a suite. Located in the very centre of beautiful Gent. The multi storage car park is a 5-10 minutes walk away. Would I stay there again...maybe maybe not.

« Got off to a rough start, but ended positively »

The hotel is situated right in the center of historic Ghent and right in the middle of road construction, so I had to carry the luggage a few blocks, to be told that the elevator was not working and the only room available at noon was on the 4th floor. Wi-Fi in the room was really weak also. What saved the day was the staff. I left a suit coat in the closet which they mailed to me in the UK (on my credit card) but they were very kind and thoughtful.

    « Disappointed shouldn't be a Best Western »

I booked this hotel via the Best Western website yesterday 25/94/2016. No where on the website does it state that major roadworks are going on right outside the hotel or that most of the roads leading to the hotel are closed to cars. We were woken at 0640 this morning (26/04) my a cement mixer lorry unloading outside. If the management could have been bothered to put a note on the website warning guests of possible delays and noise I wouldn't have spent 75 minutes driving around trying to get to the hotel and I may have got a decent nights sleep. The hotel itself if a little run down our room was musty and the breakfast which we didn't have is not worth the additional fee. At €125 for a night it's overpriced. This morning when we left with our baggage we had to negotiate guests having breakfast in the tiny dining room as we tried to get through with our baggage to reception. The manager chose not to be available to talk to us. This is a let down to the Best Western brand I am surprised that they let them be a member of their "club". I will be taking it up with Best Western as I feel let down, we use Best Western numerous times a year because we find their standards good, this place is a big let down to them.

« Overall good value for money »

We arrived early to check in but had previously arranged(by email) to leave our luggage there whilst we explored the area. The location was the best feature, right in the centre of the historic area, we could walk to all the attractions. View of the belfry tower and town hall from our bedroom window were lovely. Breakfast was a decent variety of breads, meat, cheese, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, fruit, juice and coffee, buffet style, help yourself. Be aware though that dogs were permitted in the hotel and dining room, which some may not like. Room was decent size, warm and clean. Staff polite, friendly and helpful. One negative was the smell of cigarettes at the entrance foyer, not sure if staff smoked in the office but it was quite noticeable on occasion.

    « Tired Hotel & Unpleasant Staff - Don't Bother »

We stayed here for one night during the Easter weekend 2016. We arrived at 2:50pm (check in time was 3pm) and we were abruptly told by the woman on reception that check was until 3pm. Not a great first impression. The lobby/communal areas stunk of smoke. We had booked a premium twin room which again, stunk of smoke. It was tired looking with old fashioned furniture. The bathroom, again, was tired. The breakfast was average to say the least in a very old fashioned dining room. The quality of the food was dismal. There was a young lad on reception on the day of our departure who was pleasant and helpful, but as mentioned in previous reviews the lady (who I presume is the manager) has a serious attitude problem and needs some training in customer service and hospitality. When we asked for wi-fi access one member of staff was about to provide us with the log-in details but was then interrupted by the lady manager (speaking in Flemish) who informed him to tell us that we should use the free city wi-fi. This wi-fi service required registration and was very slow. Ghent is a lovely city and well worth a visit, but DO NOT BOTHER WITH THIS HOTEL.

« Nice Place close to the center »

I stayed here for one night during a business trip. The hotel is quite small a located very close to the center of the old town of Gent. The room was not very large but nice and clean. For breakfast I got all I need including coffee, juice and fresh made eggs. A place were I would go again

    « Suited us well »

Hotels like food have a lot of services that people differ with opinions but this hotel to us was rather charming. A lot of road works outside but once inside they may as well not be there. Originally offered a first floor room but they changed their minds and gave us a ground floor room with a small amount of outdoor space. Ideally located for us though next to the breakfast area and close to reception some would maybe begrudge the inevitable occasional noise from the location. The staff were excellent, one in particular in reception who was a joy to chat to guiding us towards the best of Ghent. Breakfast good continental choices and loads of places to eat within walking distance. Almost more like house sharing than a hotel which seemed strange being Best Western and would definitely return and go out of the way to.

    « Horrendous »

Dreadful. From the manager who smokes in the entry area stinking up the place (denies it and won't give her name. A nasty piece of work) to the rooms that are brown and drab. I'm sure prisons have better towels. Old, run down, one of the worst hotels I've ever experienced. Positives are the lovely front desk folks (abused by the manager in sight and hearing of guests) and the location. But there are many other hotels in the same location. Don't bother with this one.

« Much better than expected after reading reviews »

I booked this hotel as it was one of the very few hotels in central Ghent that offer more than just a continental breakfast. The breakfast was great , all the usual stuff plus bacon , scrambled eggs and sausage and lovely fresh breads. the breakfast room is tired , but it is a very old building and actually quite charming. Our room was smallish , but very clean and the bed was comfortable and i requested tea/coffee making faciilites and these were provided , so i cant ask for more than that. Location is brilliant - couldnt be better and the price we paid was excellent. We didnt have any problems with noise , in fact we didnt have any problems at all and i would stay here again. The young lady on reception - i think she was called Esmerelda - was great , really helpful and even booked our coach back to the airport for us . Only one downside , is the older lady who appears around reception , she is awful , very rude , storming about and arguing loudly and shouldnt be working in the hospitality industry! Best Western ,she is not a good image! However , we actually found it funny and it didnt in anyway spoil our trip

« In serious need of soundproofing »

This hotel is in a great location and is obviously an old historic building... still you would expect a good night's sleep given the prices... and good sleep we certainly didn't get. We had a ground floor room which smelled of smoke. OK, it had a small outside area so maybe it is used by smokers but the room itself smelled heavily of cigarette. We we woken up at 6.30 by staff setting up breakfast next door and talking at the top of their voices and clicking their heels for added sound effect. Not good! My son had a room on the first floor and was woken up every time the lift came to the floor. Please please soundproof this hotel!! On the good side, breakfast was good but people had to squeeze in between the tables to access their room, which was poor design to say the least. Best Western was more like Worse Western and very disappointing.

« Great location but Noisy »

We stayed for the Christmas Market and it was only steps away. The noise outside was very noticeable from the room. Ours faced the street. Bed was very comfortable and breakfast was good. The bathroom is huge and very nice. Our room had a hall as you enter and bathroom to right and bedroom to the left with 2 stairs up and two stairs down. Stairs were a little strange. I would stay again as everything is easily accessible.

    « Overpriced & very tired indeed »

I requested a room on the ground floor, we got a room on the second floor. I informed them about the presence of 2 vegans in our company. All we could eat at breakfast was bread with marmalade. The breakfast room is way too small with guests being asked to come back later. The room was ok, but the bathroom tiles were broken and the toilet flush made too much noise. Staff is friendly. Location is great. But we will not be returning to this hotel.

« Historic charm, lovely staff »

The location is superb. It lies in the center of tourist-town activity, but the street is mostly quiet. Without A/C the open windows above a street seem to magnify and pedestrian conversation. The building is very old and displays charm that you won't find in a modern hotel. Breakfast is complete with eggs/meats/cheeses/yogurts/breads etc., and very nicely set out. Although a bit worn, the wallpaper in the breakfast room is historic and I found it quite charming. There is a patio where I sat for coffee and enjoyed just being outside. The staff is super friendly and helpful with directions and suggestions. I would definitely return here is I find myself in Gent again.

    « Slightly disappointed »

As the previous reviewer said, it is a great location. The staff are friendly enough but elements of the room we stayed in and the attendant service were a little odd. Firstly the room was a good size but very tired. The floorboards squeaked and my side of the mattress sloped so much that I asked my partner to hold on to me in the night to stop me sliding off the bed! There had been an attempted to touch up the paint in the room but it was a completely different hue of yellow to the original so it just looked like big blobs and patches all over the place. The oddest thing happened when we entered the room and were pleased to find that there was a mini-bar there; however we could not open it! I rang reception and the woman said: "so you want actually to use the mini-bar?". I said "er....Yep!" and she replied that we needed a key and did she want to bring it up with her? "Er...yes please!" I said. I also asked her if she could bring some tea-making equipment and cup etc. which to be fair she did bring everything up. The bathroom was very nice but the waste pipes were so noisy in the early hours that it was difficult to sleep. Plus a late night straggler turned up in the room above ours quite late, around 3.30pm and whilst I am sure there was no attempt to be anti-social the simple matter of them walking up and down for the next 15 minutes proved very loud indeed. Simply put they need to sound-proof the gaps between floor and ceiling, a pre-requisite I would suggest for any hotel in an old building. The service the following morning, including allowing us to leave our bags behind reception for a couple of hours after check-out, was excellent I have to say in mitigation.

    « Mixed bag »

Firstly is that the hotel is in a fantastic location for all the local sites in the old city. The hotel is in an old building, and upon entering the carpet and décor in the small reception area needs updating. Bit of a rabbit warren getting to the rooms through the breakfast area and the room was also dated. I believed when I booked that there were tea and and coffee facilities but there were none. Asked at reception but was told that there were none. However, the toilet was broken and so they moved me to the room next door which was bigger and had a more updated bathroom. Lo and behold, there were tea and coffee facilities in the room! Strangely, although there was wardrobe to hang clothes there were no drawers anywhere. Again, carpet has seen better days but the bed and linen were of a good quality. The breakfast was standard warm and cold buffet which was perfectly adequate and the staff were very friendly and helpful, so a big thanks to them. Come on Best Western, get your wallet out and refurbish the hotel and give your staff a hotel they deserve.

    « Wouldn't recommend this hotel »

My family and I were given a room in this hotel by Novotel as our booking had been lost. But due to this not being this hotels' fault we arrived with open minds, but it was poor. (I guess its important to add that we don't have extremely high standards and don't stay in high end hotels) There were no lifts and so all heavy luggage had to be carried up two flights of stairs with no assistance. One of our rooms smelt awfully of damp. The breakfast was below average with the walls covered in peeling felt. And the next morning when leaving we had to drag all our big bags through the breakfast hall while everyone was eating which was awkward and difficult. The staff were lovely and the building and local area is beautiful but it really is in need of refurnish. There are many other hotels near by in Ghent which aren't very expensive. As the title states, I wouldn't recommend this hotel.

« Perfect location and Good Breakfast, Loved this Hotel »

Came upon this hotel without a reservation as we decided to make a stop in Ghent. The old hotel is at the center of the historic city with a great location. We were happy to find a big room to accommodate the 4 of us on the top floor with two large beds. Had no elevators so we had to drag our suitcases up the creaky stairs. I'm still chuckling at this task. The room itself was very large including a huge bathroom. The room looks a little tired but very clean. Loved the old wooden beams on the ceiling. The only downside was that there was no air conditioning (we had very hot weather) but you have to remember that this is a very old historical building, very quiet though. The hotel staff spoke English and were very helpful and pleasant. No on-site parking but staff told us where to park by the Church. We even enjoyed beer with the locals after we parked. Loved the breakfast in the old character dining room and my daughter and I went outside to enjoy the little courtyard off of the dining room for our breakfast. Very charming hotel. Very old but it has character. Would stay here again.

« great location and breakfast »

terrific location, right next to cathedral and Belfry. Full breakfast included was awesome, even able to take sandwich along for later while travelling! Room pretty basic, but that was all we needed, beds, tv, free wi-fi, great shower. Lots of roomsmall foyer in room between bathroom and bedroom.
