"Cleanliness of rooms"

12/07/2018

Have stayed at this hotel several times now, and each time it seems to being getting worse. 11/7/18 to 13/7/18 My visit this time as per the last few are the same complaints.. - Rooms are never made up when you get back - Cobwebs in all corners of the room - Bathrooms with cracked sinks and faulty showers - No hot food service after 9.. sandwiches only - windows don't open up, keep painting over them

"Couldn't fault it"

This hotel is great, and much better than other Best Western Hotels we have stayed in. Check in was quick and the receptionists very friendly and helpfull. We were given a large twin room with a view over a small coutyard. The furnishings were tasteful and the whole room had a relaxed feel. The bathroom was spotless with huge white towels. Toilettries were provided on arrival, but the only downside was that they were not replenished during our 3 night stay. A very nice touch was a room fan as it was very hot weather. The breakfasts were excellent, with something to suit every taste. We had one evening dinner, and that too was excellent quality, with a very friendly service. A wedding was taking place on our second day, but this did not interfere with us at all. The staff throughout the hotel were friendly and helpfull. The deer park was an added attraction and there was also a lake within the grounds. We would certainly go back there.

"Delightful setting"

09/07/2018

Having recently return from a short stay at this hotel, I can say I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. Set in a gorgeous deer park where you are able to feed the animals. There is a lake, where local anglers were fishing. We saw a variety of birds, geese, ducks, rabbits and a fox. There are paths around the hotel so you are able to do short walks. The room was quite spacious and comfortable, with crisp bedding. Toiletries were provided, as were tea, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits. We had dinner on the first night. The service was exceptional with staff showing real commitment to customer service. I cannot praise the lady and gentleman enough. There was a good choice for breakfast. Reception staff were very welcoming, helpful and informative. Altogether a lovely short break.

"A magical setting"

Located in stunning gardens and full of history.Excellent breakfast rooms .Rooms are a generous size with good tea/coffee making facilities which are replenished daily, along with shower gels etc.Clean with plenty of hot water and towels. Some rooms a little tired but feeding the deer and explore the grounds makes up for this.Along with the very generous tasty cooked breakfast.A good base for exploring this area.

"Appalling service "

27/06/2018

I didn't stay at the hotel but I dropped my dad and step mum off to their room which stunk quite badly of some gas type smell and they couldn't of slept in their at all. It was horrible. The lady on reception was really quite poor and not very friendly or welcoming. The manager was helpful and sorted them out with another room. The location is lovely however the service is a disappointing for the money and location. They were given filthy bath towels and said that it promised so much but was a disappointment

"Wedding reception at Whitworth Hall."

30/05/2018

We held our daughters wedding reception there on Saturday 19th May 2018. The room for the reception was beautifully laid out for 100 guests. I had several reports from guests re the very good quality of the meal. Thankfully the weather that day was lovely which enabled several guests to go for a walk in the deer park. Quite a few of the guests booked rooms for the night of the wedding. Each and every guest reported that the rooms were very comfortable and the breakfast was excellent. My husband and I (although we didn't stay there) went to Whitworth Hall and had breakfast with the remaining guests. Wide choice of menu and lovely food, although quite expensive. Would definitely go back again as would all our guests who stayed the night.

Myself, my partner, step Son and Daughter in law attended a wedding and booked two rooms for the night on the 27th January . Firstly we were impressed with the place overall when we first drove in , the deer roaming the fields were impressive . The wedding itself was lovely and the food was all nice aswell . The rooms we had booked were both next to each other and both spacious and very comfortable . also worth mentioning both different from each other in shape and decor , not identical rooms which I thought was good. Breakfast was a very nice full English made to order . Overall a lovely place and a very nice stay

A lovely place to relax. Enjoy the friendly staff, scenic setting of the Hotel, nice real ale from tap, and the cozy Lounge/bar area. Rooms have comfy beds, often the beds are four pster beds - something special if you care for that kind of features.

Beautiful setting. Made more special with the Fallow deer in the park opposite the hotel. We took a drink, bought some deer food and sat in the park. The deer are at peace with us and it is just so calming. There is a lake here too and it is just so lovely walking around. If u have children there is a small park area. Staff are pleasant, food was nice and weather definitely helped towards a lovely first stay at Whitworth. We were in room 22 which maybe needs to be updated in the not too distant future.

"Not for me I'm sorry"

03/05/2018

The hotel looks great from the outside. But : I was in room 24, it was quite dark to start with, I noticed the radiator under the window is only just hanging on, the screws have pulled out leaving a big hole in the wall and therefore its very loose. Don't sit on it even though its under a nice big window with no views much. The wardrobe doors are so out of sqaure they are catching and need a good pull to open. Bathroom was a bit dated in my opinion, but functional so I suppose its OK. They have a maintenance ticket on the door for guests to fill in, but they should check not me. I went for a beer and had to wait about 10 minutes until someone turned up to serve me! I had booked a table for 7.00 at reception, and turned up 5 minutes early noticed the sheet had me down for 7.30, how hard is it to listen to what a customer wants. but they put me in as there were only a couple of others in there. I had fish and chips in the library (yes thats a nice room) but the battered fish was cooked from frozen and the batter was soggy, the quality of the fish was not good either and at £15.50 I would have expected better quality food, the chips tasted like yesterdays. A pint of guinness had a 1inch head and should have been topped up a bit, but I got an excuse "its not pouring well tonight?" So not a great experience. It was not busy but the staff seemed to think they were rushed off their feet. Another couple were given a steak night menu but it was a pie night last night, shame I was never even offered the special pie menu so what kind of service was that. Slept OK duvet a bit thin, but heating was on all night so OK. For breakfast I asked for 2 fried eggs with toast, and just 1 sausage and 1 rasher of bacon. I only got 1 egg first time and no toast. the second egg came later and the toast came even later. Same comment as before. Try listening to your customers please, we only want simple things that we ask for. I should have complained this morning but after the experience I just could be bothered. Consequently I will never stay there again. This is soley based on my stay there last night, perhaps its just me and remember its my opinion only. But as I said Its not for me and I wont be back. Sorry not a delighted customer.

Stayed here in January as part of an NHS Conference and it was great. Food and rooms were good and the service was excellent. Quaint and very unique. The team deserve to do well. Lots of nice personal touches

"Idyllic Country setting"

29/04/2018

This is a lovely hotel, set in beautiful grounds. There is a Deer Park - with many, many deer happily feeding from your hand! Also a lovely lake and Church. The hotel is well appointed - decor and facilities are excellent. Our room was very comfortable and all the staff we met were helpful and welcoming. Our only criticism was the menu in the dining room - it was a little uninteresting and the food, while perfectly acceptable was not as good as expected from the pictures on the website and the prices! The wine, however was very good value. We were also disappointed that there was not a Brasserie menu. All in all - we would recommend the hotel and I hope we will find time to return.

"Far superior to other Best Westerns I've visited...."

27/04/2018

I needed a hotel to stay in after watching my team, Darlington FC beat Spennymoor 2-1 away, and chose this. Having parked up immediately over a low stone wall in front of Reception entrance was a herd of deer, very tame, could walk right up them, a great start to my visit. Not that impressive a reception area and I had to walk through the bar to my bedroom, but the carpets in the corridor and bedroom were plush, the standard of a 5 star hotel. Very well equip bathroom nicely decorated, sizeable bedroom and a comfy bed. Public rooms included a lovely conservatory and the restaurant looked nice from a distance. I only had a sarnie in the evening and no breakfast but from purely an accommodation perspective I will return if ever I need to stay in the area again

"Comfort and Quality"

We had an excellent two days at Whitworth Hall. We enjoyed luxurious surroundings and service of high quality. Bedroom was clean and tidy, the rest areas were very comfortable, the meals were good and the atmosphere was relaxed.

"Lovely Hotel"

22/04/2018

Stayed just 2 nights on a web deal and could have not been more happy with this hotel. the staff were polite and professional and the place itself a delight. Set in an historic period mansion within its own deer park and lake in a secluded location if your looking for a place to stay to unwind within the modern day pressures and noise look no further. We ate in the hotel on our first night and were more than happy with the meal and breakfasts were also good with some good alternative choices should you not wish for the normal English full Monty. My only comment would be that should you want just a pint and a sandwich instead of a full meal in the evening you won't get one as they do not serve this until after 21:00hrs which seems a bit daft.

"Excellent,quiet break"

16/04/2018

We have just got back from this beautifull hotel. We had an amazing room, with a canopied bed, large gorgeous setter, and jaccuzzie bath, the dinner was lovely and the breakfast huge. Best of all were the herd of about 200 deer, they were so tame you could buy a big bag of food for £1 and they fed out of your hand. They are one of my favourite animals,so I was thrilled. No entertainment ,but it was lovely to sit in the bar and chat to other guests. We will go again.

"Enjoyable stay"

Just returned from a four night stay here, great location, nice room, good food and great staff. Only down side was the WFi that was a bit hit and miss, but this was not a deal breaker for us. Unfortunately the deer park was closed which was a shame but you would have needed your wellies.

"Underwhelmed "

03/03/2018

The reception was great with a roaring fire but the bedroom was cold. Single glazed window dripping with condensation. The heavy curtains covered the small radiator. Evening meal was a joke, given drinks menu instead of food menu, as it was steak night we knew one of the dishes on the menu. We ordered soup which was fine but we had to ask for spoons and the bread and butter was delivered when the soup was nearly finished. We ordered 2 steaks both medium, one was ok the other definitely well done, no steak knives were provided. We waited in excess of 30 minutes for dessert. The library which was actually the dining room needed a thorough clean, you could write your name in the dust and the black panels on the walls were splashed with food. The cobwebs had been in situ for quite a while. Lovely area and setting but not what we expected from a Best Western hotel.

"Afternoon Tea....highly disappointing "

2
25/02/2018

We visited for afternoon tea for my daughters birthday and unfortunately I was really disappointed. The setting is beautiful however when they bought the afternoon tea out everything was stale especially the sandwiches. We complained and the waitress went to speak to the chef. We were told they could bring us more sandwiches but they were all made up on the morning and therefore the bread would be the same. As such I declined. No-one everything was hard and dry if it isn't made up fresh. We complained went paying our bill and the staff apologised however we still had to pay £60 quid plus for hardly eating anything. I'm certainly disappointed by the poor standard of food and customer service as we had no resolution. I cannot in good conscience recommend and would in fact suggest avoiding at all costs. There are far better value afternoon teas out there.

"WINTER BREAK"

4
24/02/2018

Second visit in a year and not quite as good as previously. Reception on arrival was cold ,like just going through the motions. No cream tea on arrival was offered. Room was smaller and facing car park with window running in condensation. Cobwebs on ceiling and bath left with several marks. Dinner was a bit limiting for a vegetarian and again no free wine offered as per February offer. Tables too close together for intimate dining in a room that was not that busy. Overheard next table ordering and when food arrived waitress had got order badly wrong as she did not write order down. Food at dinner was ok but portion sizes were small. Breakfast was very good choice, well-cooked and plentiful. ( Chef even came in to ask if all was well-nice touch) and young waiting staff were pleasant and efficient. Still a nice hotel but standard had slipped bit.

Took my mother in law and daughter for afternoon tea. We were served by the very gracious and helpful gentleman Lal. What a fabulous tea. We loved the extra cute jar of hot soup as well as pork pie that was added to the delicious selection of sandwiches scones and cakes. Definitely the best value Afternoon tea we have had in a long while and served in the very beautiful garden room. What a treat!

stayed for a few days on business, room was average ,TV old and very small ,needs updating into this century, not sure how often the rooms are cleaned but mine wasnt , bed made that was it. get in the restaurant early , i was asked to dine in the conservatory area with others , the temperature was a joke , freezing cold and after 45 mins waiting for my only course chicken n chips i decided to ask how much longer it would be , the reply was no idea so i went to the bar area to thaw out not eating that night. breakfast was ok not award winning as they claim but good staff. car park not very well lit if arriving in the evening. never again.

My cousin has just lost her Mum and I wanted to spend time with her....where better that Whitworth Hall. She talked, I listened and in between we had a delicious Sunday Lunch. Roast Beef for me, Pork for her, and we had one Sticky toffee pudding and two spoons.....stuffed.com! We sat be the roaring fire had coffee and more talking, about happier times. We said our goodbyes to the portrait of Bobby Shafto on the way out. Thank you again, we are always so well looked after by your delightful staff

"Wonderful staff in excellent hotel"

11/02/2018

I booked the Duncombe Suite for a reunion of work colleagues. Several of us stayed overnight. The room was set early and looked well organised with spotless cloths and tableware. The hotel was busy with a wedding which I knew was happening. The hot buffet was well received by the guests. The only slight hiccup was there were two choices of dessert, fruit kebab or fruit pots. The fruit pots were chosen first which left fruit kebabs which were a disappointment to two guests. With hindsight perhaps only one dessert might have been a better choice. The staff were very friendly and although busy it was easy to get served in the bar. The people staying were treated with respect when it was clear the staff needed to sort the room out. we moved into the comfortable lounge. The bedrooms are large, spotlessly clean with comfortable beds. The bathroom was extremely clean with big fluffy white towels. As described on the website the hotel is set in picturesque countryside. The breakfast was delicious and made special by Tommy - a friendly happy polite waiter. We had a lovely time in the hotel but I would like to point out that although the building and rooms are good for me it's the staff that make it special. From Emma, the events organiser, to the receptionists, the waiters and the bar staff they made me and my friends feel important. Well done and thank you.

"Highly recommend "

10/02/2018

As a family of 4 we stayed Wednesday night. We were thrilled with every aspect of our stay except the temperature of our room...but we accept heating is a very personal thing. From the moment we stepped through the door the staff were very friendly, efficient and attentive. On arrival it was realised the beds for our children had not been set up so we were offered complimentary hot drinks while we waited for them to be made. Dinner was pie night and exceptional value for a really tasty steak and mushroom pie with loads of fresh veggies and mashed potato. Breakfast was equally delicious. Eggs and kippers cooked to perfection. The deer feeding was an added unexpected bonus. We were most impressed that the manager sought us out in the morning to apologise for the delay in accessing our room the night before. He clearly is a manager who is truly managing his hotel well. We wouldn't hesitate to highly recommend Whitworth Hall.

Spent two nights at Whitworth Hall - a really charming place with it's own deer park. Staff were very attentive, especially our breakfast waiter who couldn't do enough for us. The bedroom was very comfortable with plenty of wardrobe space. We ate in the first evening and the food was good and plentiful. Would definitely stay again when in the area.

"A Massive Thankyou For A Hen Do!"

We booked a hen do here for my sister which included a meal and a craft company coming in to help. The whole day went off so well, the staff could not have been more helpful and we loved the food. just wanted to pop on a review to make sure they get the credit they deserve and we will be definitely celebrating here more often

"A great birthday present!"

5
02/02/2018

I visited Whitworth Hall Hotel with my wife at the end of January to celebrate my birthday. From our arrival to our departure the staff were very friendly and made us feel most welcome. We were in a beautiful room with the window facing the views of the deer park which my wife enjoyed immensely. There was a function on the evening in one of the function rooms but although it was busy this did not effect the staff's efficiency throughout the evening. We dined in the restaurant and were looked after by a waitress called Gina who was very informative telling us about the local history of the Hall. She also kept us entertained throughout the evening with some very funny stories. The food was delivered on time and was cooked exactly as we ordered and although the restaurant wasn't very busy as a lot of the guests were in the function we enjoyed the decor and ambience. We had a good night's sleep although the bed wasn't as comfortable as our own at home but I'm just being a little bit picky. We both went down for breakfast and we both ordered the full English which apparently has won awards. Having tried it we now understand why it has won awards as it was delivered quickly, looked great on the plate and was hot and delicious. We finished our trip with a visit to see the deer and of course purchased 2 bags of food from reception. This was the best way to end a fantastic birthday treat! Thank You Whitworth Hall.

15/01/2018

Stayed here for the weekend 13/14 January. This hotel, in our opinion, is faultless. Starting outside, the building is very smart and looks well maintained. The walk around the grounds lit up with fairy lights at night, is a nice way to walk off a meal! The deer are worth the stay alone, beautiful animals and so tame. Food available at reception to feed them and you can go into their enclosure, but it is very muddy this time of year. Our room was lovely. Very clean with everything you need, thick bath towels, a comfy bed and well stocked hospitality tray. We ate in the restaurant in the evening and that didn't disappoint either. The food was presented beautifully and tasted great. Breakfast was the same. A special mention must go to Tommy, restaurant supervisor. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He was friendly, efficient and an absolute credit to the hotel. We have already booked to come back in August, but for two nights next time and we can't wait. Thank you Whitworth Hall for a lovely stay.

"Wonderful stay "

05/01/2018

Firstly, I'd like to point out this hotel is a 3 star - so don't come expecting 5 star. I do, however, rate this hotel as excellent! It met and exceeded all my expectations and hopes! Just came back from a stay with my husband and two children (age 5 and 10). Room was huge and well furnished. Bar was well stocked for families. Breakfast was wonderful! Staff couldn't have been nicer. They were all lovely, with exceptional manners, making the stay even more enjoyable. There are also lots of simple extras in this hotel that I appreciated; weather print out, toilet brush, raspberry jam (like I said, simple things!) Yes, the floor boards creak, the toilet flush was loud, the doors bang (as mentioned in other reviews) but actually, considering the age of this building, it's amazing! I also loved that you got to learn about the history of the hotel, both my girls sing the bobby shafto song at school. I booked this stay to get us out the house for a night during the Christmas holidays. It cost a total of £44 for four of us B&B - an incredible price for anywhere in the school holidays! That leads me to the real reason we visited; the deer park. It was amazing!! Loved every minute of it. You can buy bags of feed from reception, even get free ones if you check-in at the deer park on Facebook. The man who looks after the deer was wonderful! He was so knowledgable and was really lovely with my family. He answered all their questions and shared lots of stories and knowledge with them. He even waited until after my girls had fed the deer to feed them properly, so the deer would stay longer with them. 11 bags of feed later..... We'll certainly visit again in the summer as there was a play area and a nice lake area to explore. Next time we visit in the winter though we'll remember our wellies!

"Christmas Lunch"

26/12/2017

Had a great Christmas Lunch, only the Yorkshire pudding stopped it from being excellent. Service was great, they catered for less this year so we were well looked after. Wine with the meal. Great setting for any function with its beautiful grounds.

Attended a lovely wedding evening here. The service and staff were great. Rather expensive and slightly limited bar but the night made up for that. Friends and family stayed at the hotel itself and really enjoyed their stay!

We had a lovely room, with good views, staff were all very friendly. Good selection for breakfast. The only downside to our stay that it wasnt longer. Hopefully we will be back in 2018 for longer stay.

"Business overnight stay"

6 of us stayed for one night and had a lovely welcome and the night porter made us some great Wensleydale sandwiches. The breakfast was good and it's a lovely hotel with friendly staff in a beautiful setting.

11/12/2017

We only stayed one night but we would have no hesitation in coming back for another stay. The room was gorgeous with loveky comfy beds , big fluffy towels and a lovely big bath to relax in. Our evening meal was delicious and we could even watch tbe deer as they passed by the windows. Our breakfast was good too, all freshly cooked and plenty of good hot coffee. We will definitely be coming back.

"Great stay"

02/12/2017

This was the 2nd time we have stayed here and it was still as good as last time . We only stayed one night on the 27/11 and the staff in the dining room on the evening and at breakfast were really friendly and helpful . The food was of a high standard and my rump steak was the best I've had and breakfast especially the full English was enough to keep you going for the day. We had room 1 which has a very comfy bed and lovely views over the deer park. We look forward to coming again and spending a few days next time to make the most of this lovely hotel

"Winterfest at Whitworth "

5
30/11/2017

I attended the Winterfest event at the hotel today and I must say how fabulous it was...The amount of snow that came down today came as a surprise to everyone I think but the maintenance men stayed on top of it for the whole time I was there, it is such a shame that this put people off coming along as they really missed out. The stalls were all fab and although not a great crowd they all seemed to be having fun! The free mince pie and mulled wine was a bonus too. Will definitely return for future events such as this or otherwise. Well done Whitworth! Oh and the brass band were an added extra that really created a xmas atmosphere and the first one I have seen this year!...oh and the deer...can't forget them, so lucky to have all of this so close to home! Thank you

We have been meaning to right this review for a while, but we have been so busy since coming back from our honeymoon . We would both like to say thank you to all the staff at Whitworth Hall, it was a fantastic day and the staff went the extra mile, a special mention to David because he was so supportive in what we both wanted for our wedding thank you . Our guests cannot stop talking about the wedding and all left on a high. They all thought the hotel was in beautiful setting and couldn't believe this was right on our door step. The location is just right for a wedding and the dears in the park make it such a special venue for photos. So brides to be have a look you might be surprised. Many thanks again, we will be back as we have booked Christmas lunch, and our looking forward to this.

"Unprofessional"

2
26/11/2017

Stayed here for a few days on business, i had a room that was near to a fire exit door and some store cupboards so had my doubts straight away about noise, the first night was not too bad, the room could have been cleaner, the floor in the bathroom was very damp and the shower head was mouldy and old, there was an iron burn on the carpet and the room itself was very dusty, the one thing i did find very unprofessional was some of the staff, they clearly need more training on how to respect there guests staying in the hotel, a lot of shouting, giggling and bad language heard on a couple of occasions from outside of my room from staff members covered in tattoos!! On the plus side this hotel looks very nice from the outside with its old charm and deer park.

"Autumn is every bit as good as spring time."

5
22/11/2017

This is the first visit to Whitworth Hall in Autumn all our previous breaks spent here have been in early or late spring. But the hotel is just as good in autumn as in spring time, all the golds, oranges and and browns of the foliage and the young deer in the fields, even the young Cormorant perching over the lake make the grounds well worth a visit. As for the hotel Everyone the room cleaners , reception, serving & kitchen staff, nothing was too much trouble and all made my wife and I really welcome, this was a surprise trip as my wife booked 48 hours before we went as part of my 71 st birthday treat and we had a fantastic time. Thank you Lal our Duty Manager for making our stay painless, merry Christmas to all the staff there. We 'll see you again in May 2018 Thamk you

"Beautiful setting"

17/11/2017

Took a small group of 17 adults to stay for one night.Could have stayed longer if time had allowed. We had an evening meal which was not as nice as we had hoped . The risotto was dry and a tiny portion and the burger choice was equally dry . The fish and chips were however very nice. The breakfast more than made up for this. It was delicious with lots of choice and the dining room staff were helpful and friendly. The hotel is situated in beautiful parkland. and the herd of deer are a lovely addition to this. Our rooms were ,large clean and comfortable with nice toiletries and tea/ coffee making facilities. The hotel staff were all extremely helpful and the whole ambience of the hotel is comfortable and welcoming. I would love to return next year.

"Only Fools night and overnight stay"

14/11/2017

Wow, what an amazing stay we had! We booked in for the comedy dining Only fools and three courses, and decided to make a night of it. From arriving to leaving, everything was just perfect. Warm welcome, stunning room with excellent facilities, entertained all evening, fed a delicious meal, and then danced the night away. The staff couldn't do enough for us. Breakfast was a feast and kept us happy for the whole day long. It's very hard to believe that this is only a 3 star. Please pass on our gratitude to all the staff.

"A lovely place to stay"

5
10/11/2017

I stayed for one night and cannot fault the hotel or its staff. The lady on reception was helpful and asked if I wanted help with my cases. I booked room only but decided to try the lounge and after a glass of wine I decided to eat at the hotel. I was tired and decided to eat early at 1800 after having a lovely soak in a wonderfully large bath. I had an executive room and although booked as a single occupancy there were two sets of towels, two biscuits and a bottle of still and sparkling water, I only had a starter and main in the restaurant, both of which were wonderful. I had coffee and a separate Tia Maria in the lounge. A wonderful stay and I shall return.

"Work stop over"

09/11/2017

1 night stay over on a work trip. Would normally stay at the derwent manor as it's closer but couldn't get in. This is a lovely property maintaining some lovely original features. My room was large and although not newly decorated was still tidy. No problems with it. I decided not to eat at the hotel as I was after more of a pub atmosphere but in hindsight I should have eaten at the hotel. Staff were really friendly, would definitely stay here again. Lovely grounds and well marked footpaths outside the hotel and into the countryside for an evening run.

08/11/2017

Lovely setting ,staff all very excellent and helpful, Rooms well attended to in all the small details you would expect with this company, lovely breakfast with a large choice set in the library but an interesting room with a lot of interesting piece there, it was nice to have breakfast and watch the deer roaming about also the gardens are worth a walk round. ??

"Dissapointed this time."

01/11/2017

Stayed at this Hotel several times before and enjoyed the experience. Unfortunately I feel the food standards are in decline in comparison to previous experiences. The restaurant steak night was mediocre, a good steak but a dry salad. The dessert was poor, a reasonable sticky toffee pudding with a jug of separated custard resembling scrambled eggs. The following day I had a savoury cheese sandwich meal in the bar lounge area. The sandwich comprised of a sloppy cheesey mixture between what appeared to be ordinary sliced white supermarket bread. A dry side salad and vegetable crisps all with an unappetising presentation.

"Christmas lunch booking "

1
31/10/2017

We have been coming here for Christmas lunch nearly every year since we moved to the area 17 Year's ago. Again this year we booked for the 2 of us. However on Friday we received a phone call to say that 2 close members of our family would be visiting from Columbia. I immediately rang the hotel to increase our number to 4. Yesterday I received a phone call from the receptionist to say they had already completed the seating plan & could not add 2 more. This has put me in the situation of having to cancel our booking thus loosing £50. In previous years we have always had a table that sat 4 even though there was just 2 of us absolutely furious & will never ever book Christmas with this hotel again.

"Relaxing stay at great hotel and location"

5
29/10/2017

Very comfortable hotel in a lovely countryside location. All staff were welcoming and friendly (and locally-sourced!) Nothing was too much trouble. Room was a decent size, with sufficient tea and coffee facilities and quality toiletries. Only a couple of minor glitches - we had to call out maintence to replace a downlight in the bathroom, but it was done very quickly. Our main course was served 1hr 15 minutes after arriving in the restaurant, but the staff handled the problem well.

"Wonderful location and fab food"

5
24/10/2017

I called to book an afternoon tea and the staff were so helpful in allowing us to enjoy our tea with a view of the deer I'd be so keen to see. The afternoon tea was excellent value and the food was delicious. The staff were attentive and polite and very welcoming throughout our stay. The scenery is beautiful and we really enjoyed feeding the deer. I will certainly return. Can't believe I've never heard of this place before!

"Loveley experience"

5
15/10/2017

We had a room at the front of the original building which had a wonderful view of the grounds and the deer that roam the park. We had read the reviews about some rooms being noisy due to weddings taking place which it was but this ended at midnight I think the hotel should consider this when allocating rooms and put people who are attending the event in these rooms and put other guest in the long corridor rooms. Despite saying this personally I would rather have a room in the main building as they are the feature rooms.

Hello and thank you for such a lovely review, here on Trip Advisor. It was great to read you enjoyed your time with us, highlighting the Deer and the grounds. We do as best practise to separate the gusts from our weddings, and please except my sincere apologises about the disturbance, some thing to note for future bookings is to contact the Hotel direct on either our live chat, found on the front page of our web site or best of all is to contact the hotel by email, [email protected] or telephone 01388811772 and one of our hard working team would be delighted to deal personally with any booking. once again thank you for your kind words and review. "Afternoon tea review"

12/10/2017

Found this place by accident and it is only a few miles from me. Went for afternoon tea. Very nice grounds with fishing lake and lots of friendly deer roaming. Lovely ,looking hotel with an amazing picture ceiling. This hotel "looks the part" Afternoon tea. Delicate sandwiches Delicious cakes Delicious fruit scones with jam and fresh thick cream Delicious cheese scones As much coffee as you can drink. The food was amazing but what made the afternoon tea more special was the restaurant manager, I believe his name to be Lal. He was one of the most attentive managers I have ever come across. His knowledge of the history of the hotel was amazing and it was obvious that he cared about the job he was doing. They also do special steak and pie nights Great place give it a try. 10/10

"Lucky Bobby Shafto"

5
02/10/2017

This is a wonderful hotel in a beautiful setting. Once the family home to the Shafto family ( Bobby of the poem/rhyme fame), it's a stylish Manor House with some modern trimmings ( but not the sort to spoil the aristocratic feel or olde world charm). Our room was spacious and overlooked a woodland and stream but other rooms face the deer park. The deer park which forms part of the hotel's attractions, was closed to visitors when we visited due to the rutting season, is just 20 yards across from the hotel main entrance. Even though the park is closed, the deer were out in force everyday and there are £1 bags of food at the reception for you give them a daily treat and yourself a memorable photo opportunity. The staff we met during our three night stay were happy, helpful and very obliging and cooperative: every single one of them. We enjoyed an extensive breakfast in the main dining room which was probably once the library but we chose to have our main meal in one of the more modern glass summerhouse extensions, simply because it was in easy view of the deer. The menu for the evening is not extensive choice-wise but each dish is individually prepared to your liking and very reasonably priced considering the quality of the preparation, the presentation and the ambience of the venue. I don't think I've ever been so pleasantly surprised by anything as I was by Whitworth Hall which is actually better than the all the photographs and or blurb we had read about it. The location too is perfect for people who enjoy country pursuits, hiking and the like, simply sitting enjoying the serenity of the gardens and park it, like us, people who want to explore the historic North East of England. Durham is just a few miles away with Newcastle, Sunderland, Darlington, Gateshead, Chester Le Street all within 30 minutes drive as is Beamish and Hadrian's . Wall. We're all different of course but I'd defy anyone not to fall in love with Whitworth Hall and it's excellent staff. What a wonderful advert they are for the North East. Bobby Shafto would be so proud.

29/09/2017

Through the This is Durham tourism website I won a competition and part of the prize was an evening meal in the Library Restaurant here. My husband and I decided to make a trip of it so we booked a stay for 2 nights as well. Our room was beautiful - gorgeous 4 poster bed. Can't fault anything at the hotel and the meal we had was fantastic. I can personally recommend the ploughman starter and the lamb shank main. Sadly I was far too stuffed for any dessert. My husband had the steak and ale pie and he is such a fussy eater but he loved it. Would I return? Definitely. And the grounds, I forgot the grounds and the wild deer. It was just such a lovely relaxing few days with great food and lovely surroundings.

28/09/2017

Over night stay with my husband for my birthday. Soon as we arrived standing in the bar area was a young lady with lots of body art but foul mouthing her staff to other members. So I can only think she must have been some kind of management as we sat down too our cappuccino while our room was awaiting us no fault of the staff as we arrived a little early. Lovely young gentleman behind the bar we since went on too enjoy out stay the food in the restaurant was really nice and restaurant staff were very helpful only thing that would not make us visit again is the awful language from management so unprofessional staff need too be trained too a higher standard

21/09/2017

I could write at least a pamphlet if not a small book about this hotel....and my recent stay. Due to a series of unfortunate events my arrival was greeted by no room available! After 7 hrs of driving and it being late already for dinner a shower and a meal were the prime requites. There was a delay ...... but within the hour rooms had been sorted, dinner provided and the excellent service we received from the moment the issues were revealed and tackled is a credit to the staff and management of the hotel; no person can be singled out as this was a team effort to put right some issues of which the hotel were unaware. First class effort and resolution and I'll be staying here again without question.

"A very enjoyable stay"

5
20/09/2017

I cannot understand why Whitworth Hall Hotel is not more publicised than it is. This is a very good hotel set in an amazing deer park. We only stayed for one but wished we could have stayed for longer. We had a room with a four poster bed for a very reasonable £120. We ate in the restaurant, had a very enjoyable meal and the prices were lower than any local pub. The staff were excellent throughout. For the money this is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. I cannot recommend it more strongly.

"Don't Come Here for the Food"

1
20/09/2017

Celebrating a family birthday, this had been booked for lunch. What a disaster! They had two larger groups in so we were left waiting and waiting - not the fault of the staff (who were lovely and get the one star) but the management really should not accept other bookings when they cannot cope. The menu was incredibly limited. I have more variety in my fridge at home! Steak & chips, Fish & chips, Burger & chips with the "special" for the day crossed out and handwritten in green ink on the two pieces of copier paper that passed for a menu. Had I not been someone's guest I would have walked out immediately. I'm sorry but is this really part of the BestWestern chain? Why not swap out "best" for "Wild". When it finally arrived the food was not very appealing. The burger was shall we say rare in the middle, liberal use seemed to have been made of olive oil, and the chips were warm and soggy. Some of us had soft drinks and they didn't put any ice in them. It takes a lot for me to write a really bad review but this was just too bad in too many areas. All round an experience I would really like to forget.

"Utter Shambles "

1
20/09/2017

Absolutely disgraceful!! Booked a table for 8:15pm arrived at 8:05pm and had a drink in the bar. Sat waiting for 40 minutes to be taken to our table, only to be the told they only have limited choice left on the menu as they have been busy. 'We only have 6 portions of venison left, that's it'. We've now had to rush to find somewhere else to go out for our dinner. Why we're we not told on arrival that you didn't have any food? Why take our booking if you were so busy? Why let us order drinks if you knew your service was terrible? We will never be coming again. It's cost £20 in a return taxi journey and a total waste our time.

"This is my favourite hotel"

5
18/09/2017

Been coming here for 9 years now and just love it. This was the first time I stayed "upstairs" though and had a lovely view.overlooking the scrounging deer. I even met one of the resident cats..... Service here is ALWAY the best. They love their jobs abd it shows. Lal is utterly unique. It is lovley to be rembered evertime and to have a class of service that died out in the 1920s. A wedding each night of our visit, but, like Buddy Holly, the music died at midnight. Just love this place.

"Cancelled room"

03/09/2017

In July I booked a double room for 2 nights, a Friday & Saturday night in August. I received an email confirmation within a couple a hours, so far so good. Three weeks later on the 8 August I phoned the hotel and asked if there was a wedding taking place over the weekend I'd booked and if so, could I have a quiet room. I was advised a wedding was taking place and was told that I could have a room away from the disco, so far so good. Then on the 12 August I received a phone call saying their computer system had failed and I should not have been able to book a room as the wedding party had booked the whole hotel. This was 6 days before my supposed stay and as I was visiting Kynren in Bishop Auckland I knew then I would be unable to book accommodation in the local area at such a very short notice. They suggested 2 other hotels in the area, however when I phoned they were fully booked as were all the other local hotels in the area. Fortunately I was able to find alternative accommodation in the Durham Dales, however a some what much longer journey from Bishop Auckland, 45 minutes drive. If you are considering booking this hotel please make sure that their computer system in working correctly and you booking is secure. I thought my booking was secure with by receiving a confirmation email and a phone conversation, however it was not.

"80th Birthday Lunch in Library Whitworth Hall Hotel"

5
19/08/2017

We have just come away from celebrating a family lunch for my 80th Birthday and can only speak highly of the service and attention to detail that we received. The food was delicious and the service excellent. Everyone remarked on how much they had enjoyed the day. We have stayed at the hotel twice in room 3 which I can highly recommend. It has double aspect windows and looks onto the Deer Park. The last time we stayed here was on Easter Sunday this year. My Family Party was one of three. We also had an event at the Pavilion which I had reviewed. Our next event is a Party for Friends on 20th August, I will let you know how it goes. If it is as good as the event on 12th August for my husband's family we will be delighted. everyone remarked on how much they had enjoyed their day. Benny who served us and who hails from Greece saw to our every need in a cheerful and helpful manner. We are due to attend another celebration next Sunday and now look forward to repeating the experience,

"Good hotel, friendly staff"

17/08/2017

We had a two night stay in this lovely building opposite a deer park and set in beautiful well kept grounds. Our room was a good size, very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice from full English, fresh fruit, pastries, croissants. Really good coffee. The dinner menu could do with more variety but quite acceptable, nicely cooked and presented well. The sea bass on the second night was particularly good. All the staff should be very proud of themselves, really friendly and helpful. We don't normally single out the staff, but Gina in the restaurant was great, and gave us loads of local historical information about the hotel and the surrounding area. Thank you all for a super stay.

"Stayed her for a weekend with my Father"

15/08/2017

Very easy to find with very attractive grounds and surround. Lovely pond/lake with fishing along with well kept gardens. Closer to the Hotel are dozens of deer who you can feed by hand if you ask for a bag of food at reception. The exterior building itself has plenty of character and the interior matches and is high quality and in good repair. I found the staff very friendly and attentive. We ate once at the Hotel and was good value for money and excellent quality. Again the Waitress staff were very friendly and attentive. We had a twin room which had lots of space and had the usual kettle with tea, coffee and biscuits. The bathroom was clean and tidy with plenty of clean towels but it was a little worn and the ventilation made a funny noise at times. But fine as long as you closed the door. All in all am very impressed by our stay and would certainly have no hesitation in recommending it.

This is a splendid hotel. Visually stunning. There is plenty of parking. The hotel is set in a vast amount of land. There is a beautiful landscaped garden, and a field full of deer. Free wifi is included. Our room was spacious with an excellent shower, trouser press, and television. The bar serves a good variety of alcohol and non alcoholic drinks. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The English breakfast was excellent and plentiful. This is an excellent venue for weddings. We are looking forward to returning to this excellent hotel in March.

"Moderate"

14/08/2017

Five of us had Sunday lunch in the lovely library restaurant. Four of us ordered ordered pork and one ordered beef. The vegetables were very nice, but the meat was a let down. The beef was rather bland even though it was pink, as stated on the menu. The pork- there was one slice less on the plate compared to the beef- was also rather bland, and the crispy crackling was soggy and rubbery on all four plates. It was still on the slices instead of being cooked separately to be crispy. The staff were friendly and attentive, but we were rather disappointed with meal.

"Fabulous Hotel & Grounds "

We had the most fabulous stay at whitworth hall , lovely spacious room ,breakfast was the best we have had in a hotel . Dinner in the library restaurant was amazing. Staff were really attentive. The city of Durham was only 20 mins away so lots to do on the area Ps feed the deers ,what a treat !!

First of all, the deer are breathtaking and worth the price of staying here. Just seeing them gave me a wonderfully calm feeling. As you can see, the structure and grounds are beautiful as well. In addition, the service at breakfast is phenomenal and the food is outstanding. Their pastries redefine the word "fresh"! What could possibly be wrong? Well, when the toilets flush, they sound like dying cows! Once, our door card could not open our door. We were told that we shouldn't put it next to our phone because our phones can erase the data on the card. (Really? This wasn't true anywhere else we stayed as I usually put my hotel card in the same pocket as my phone.) Finally, when we explained we had no wifi in our room (though we were supposed to), we were told they had to reboot. I guess they rebooted, but it didn't help. My phone continued to give me the spinning circle of death!

"Weekend Break"

09/08/2017

Stayed 28 - 31 July 2017. Staff were very friendly and helpful despite being busy with weddings on two of the days we were there. Grounds were lovely and it was nice to see the deer in the park while eating breakfast, which was very good. The restaurant menu was the same each evening and although the food was well presented I thought the choices were limited so we ate elsewhere on the third evening. The rooms were a nice size and clean but I thought the decorations were "tired". Staff had forgotten to make up our room on the 29th July but did it immediately once we raised the issue. The location suited our needs and there was plenty of parking available.

visited 31st July -3rd August 2017. In the past my partner had stayed here on a bridge weekend and enjoyed his visit.Returning on a personal visit I have to say we were disappointed. Our room was quiet and well appointed and there were a good number of young pleasant staff around , but they lacked direction in the bar area and dining room, where the menu was the same every day and with poor choices. e.g. expensive beef burgers and meat pies!!. Poor choice of sweets, slow service and lack of information on any offers. Where was the roast or veal, interesting salad or white fish not fried? Bar not always attended before dinner and a bottle of beer offered without a glass!!The manager seemed to think that it was normal to drink from a bottle!!!. I agree with previous reports, wedding events take precedence over retired visitors . What a shame. I would have liked to stay again to visit an interesting area Hartlepool's Maritine Museum is a 'must'. But not without good food.

"Noise disturbance"

02/08/2017

We stayed here in July with our young family- fully aware that this is wedding season we requested in writing in advance of our booking a quiet room and specifically 'stated away from wedding noise.' On check in with Amber at reception we again asked for a quiet room we were told not to worry - we had room 5 which was quiet. We stayed for 2 nights Friday was quiet although we could not open our window because of a guest courtyard below and the room was ridiculously hot. On Saturday we returned to our room and it was clear a wedding was in 'full swing.' We assumed because we had stated in writing that we would like a quiet room as well as having asked at reception that all would be fine. We put our children to bed at 7 and all was still quiet we realise now that this is because it was the interval/DJ setting up time. We were awoken at 10.30 by loud voices and the room was literally shaking with the music noise. The disco was literally below us. I called down to reception and the duty manager Sophia apologised profusely and said that we should never have been allocated this room. We have been reimbursed for this night but how embarrassing for the hotel that at so many levels they failed to ensure that we were allocated a correct family room. If we had been allocated room 31 as indicated we should have been by the night manager all of the stress could have been avoided. Our two children under 5 were petrified and it is so frustrating that this could have been avoided. Poor customer service.

Beautiful, beautiful place. Spent ages walking the grounds - local church, pet cemetery, deer park, the dene. Wonderful - so full of history and fascinating little nooks.Stayed in the Shafto room, which was lovely. Well-appointed and very comfortable. Staff could not have been more attentive and really helped to make my stay that bit more special. Comfortable seating area in bar and the dining room was beautiful. Breakfast was special - freshly cooked to order. Highly recommended -- I hope for a return visit soon.

"Lovely Afternoon Tea"

29/07/2017

Had a lovely afternoon tea a Whitworth Hall . It was one of the best I've had and excellent vale for money. Even had to bring some home as we couldn't finish it all. The staff were lovely . The duty manager in particular was so nice he couldn't do enough for us, nothing was a bother . There was a wedding going on in the hotel but the staff were still very attentive and so helpful . This place is a hidden gem and is definitely worth a visit. We love Whitworth Hall and gardens .

"Lovely location, not such a pleasant stay"

29/07/2017

OK, the good points first. Lovely location, lovely grounds, very nice room and bathroom and for the most part lovely staff. As for the restaurant food, the menu was somewhat limited especially since one of ourt requested was unavailable, in addition to the unavailable starters of which we were ore-warned. The breakfast was good despite, yet again, certain ingredients (the vegetarian sausage) again not being available. BUT, the problem with the hotel is common to many hotels these days - the wedding party. I understand the financial incentive hotels have to cater for weddings and given the beautiful environment any wedding here would be special. But for the other guests it can be a real chore. Pounding music til midnight make sleep virtually impossible even with ear plugs especially in the (apparently) better vista'd rooms which reside directly over the reception area. Having stayed a total of 4 nights on 2 separate occasions each visit/night was subject to late night music. So, despite the hotels good points you may want to avoid if a good nights sleep is one of your priorities.

"Great location, could be so much better"

24/07/2017

Loved the location in a picturesque deer park. Our room was a decent size but overlooked the hotel's rubbish bins, which rather deflated our overall opinion, and wifi was poor. The bathroom was dated and the bi-fold shower screen leaked a significant amount of water. Service in the restaurant was friendly but not professional. We both ordered pies, which arrived without any gravy and which we had to ask for. It arrived about two thirds of the way through our meal. The bread which was supposed to be served as an appetiser turned up half way through the main course. At breakfast the next morning our order was lost entirely and so we had to wait 45 minutes for our meal. And then the toast arrived burnt and had to be sent back. Finally, the hotel has a check out time of 1000 (we didn't believe it either) which I have never come across anywhere else in the world, and certainly not for a major chain. They did agree to change it to 1100 but it amazes me that 1000 could be the standard. Given its location it could and should be a lot better. A shame.

"Not as good as it ws"

23/07/2017

Have been here many times and always enjoyed it but disappointed today. The main course was fine but bread for the table was a couple of curled up slices. No ice in drinks as was told that it had melted end route to the restaurant but they did find some when I asked twice. No decaffeinated coffee and sugar was disgusting with only the dregs in the bottom of a jam jar. The bar in the lounge was untidy with loads of empty glasses. All staff were really young and the background music was like being in an under 25s club some tracks with offensive language. We asked how many people were booked in for lunch and there were only 8. Not surprised. We won't be back for a while. Needs a good shake up.

"Disappointing visit for Afternoon Tea"

20/07/2017

Sad to write as such a lovely venue and surroundings and have been on several other occasions over the years. However on this occasion when booking a special afternoon tea for my 60th for 25 people and 3 children we had problems with rude and unaccommodating staff right from the off. Staff presentation and service was appalling. Did not set up enough seats even though they knew the numbers attending well ahead of time which meant two guests had to sit at a coffee table; butter melted and had to be replaced; cream was not clotted as advertised; scones tasted bitter and hard; cakes were certainly not homemade; some meringues tasted fishy and were inedible;we were treat as if we were a burden and not a paying customer throughout. Even though we brought several matters to attention we still did not receive an apology or any acknowledgement that things had not been to what we would expect as acceptable standard. We did not even get a receipt for the cash we handed over and have had to ask three times for it be provided and when it came it was not even correct. Very disappointing indeed. Staff need new management and mentoring and training. One did not know what a gratuity was! Having said that we take our hats off to the young people who actually served us on the day they worked very very hard to the best of their ability without any proper support.

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at Best Western Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks you for taking the time to post your review. Clearly it's disappointing to see there was little you enjoyed about the hotel, food and service on this special occasion although I may not agree with some of your points your feedback is valued, and used in a way to continually develop the service and property. It is rare for us to get negative feedback on our hardworking team, we do have some new staff and training programmes are in place for them. I can say however I did discuss all the matters raised in your review with a lady from the party the next afternoon, and went in to great detail about all the above issues and of course offered my sincere apologies, on behalf of the team and the hotel. I am sorry that you didn't enjoy your experience on this occasion, and once again please except my sincere apologies in the matter. Yours sincerely Christopher Ashby General Manager

Thank you so much to David and all the team at Whitworth. My husband and I had a truly fantastic day. We cannot fault a thing! All our guests raved about the beautiful hotel, grounds and food. We would recommend it to anyone. Thank you for ensuring a beautiful wedding.

Beautiful hotel in a fabulous location with easy parking. Very friendly staff. This was a 60th birthday celebration & our friend who was turning 60 had a fabulous room. It was a secret escapes deal & represented really good value for money. The Monday evening meal was a little disappointing. The melon starter supposedly came with a coulis which was more like soup. My partner loves steak & ale pie but it was very weird, a deconstructed pie, the puff pastry was under done, the mash was piped onto the plate & was dry, the meat was stewed to death & was stringy & dry. This was in great contrast to the breakfasts which were outstanding! So was the steak on the Tuesday evening which was a bargain, 2 steaks with all the trimmings and 2 glasses of wine £25 per couple. The staff were delightful but rather confused about the deal we had secured. The rooms were clean and comfortable although on closer inspection dusty in the corners, the weather was bad and the heating was put on & when we turned our radiator on the dust was very evident on the radiator & skirting board! We would certainly return but upgrade to the a la carte menu which looked very tasty!

Hello Than you for taking the time in writing and posting your review here on Trip Advisor following your stay with us whilst celebrating your friends special Birthday. It was lovely to read how much, on the whole you enjoyed your time with us, but did have cause to highlight a few issues in relation to food service and housekeeping, I have of course passed these matters on to the managers of the department to investigate, and I thank you for bringing them to my attention. It was also nice to read how you enjoyed the very popular Steak Night, which is held every Tuesday, and on your next visit will hopefully dine from the new Menu. Once again thank you for your review, and we do hope to see you again. Kind regards Christopher Ashby General Manager

We met our pals for one night halfway between homes on a Groupon voucher to celebrate Hubbie's 60th. From the Reception (lovely Johnathan who showed kindness and maturity with my Husband's dodgy knee and gave us a walk in shower room) to the Dinner (lovely Benny made our meal very special with her charm and warm hospitality) and drinks served, it was terrific. The place is intimate and timeless. Staff are young, friendly, capable and helpful - a rare thing these days. Must be well trained and encouraged by the Manager I suspect? The Room was spacious, comfortable and clean. Grounds are stunning and the deer, rabbits and ducks make it special. Thoroughly enjoyed it and would visit again in a heartbeat - for longer next time.

06/07/2017

My husband booked Whitworth hall for a 3 night break after staying there when working in Durham. He got brownie points for this choice as I was absolutely delighted with our stay. From the welcome at the desk to leaving we were treated courteously and looked after well. Our room, no.4 , was a superb room, very unique and overlooking the deer park.It was spacious, clean and very comfortable with all we needed. (My only worry would be the mats on the wooden floor slipped a bit and could be an issue for some....slippy as you got out of bed) But apart from this everything was lovely. We enjoyed the food ,which was very reasonably priced and always served hot. We had a delicious afternoon tea on arrival and breakfasts were filling. We enjoyed sitting in the lounge sipping our evening drinks and chatting with staff who were always friendly and helpful. Our special thanks go to Prem who was very helpful, a lovely man.The bar and waiting staff were also very professional and willing to assist. The grounds are beautiful and so well kept, and the fairy dell walk is lovely. We were also able to attend the church in the grounds as it was the first Sunday in the month....it is very historical and a pleasant surprise. I think this is one of Best Westerns hidden gems and i don't always go back to places I've stayed. ...but this one is am already planning a return visit. Thank you to all the Whitworth staff for making our break so pleasant.

Visited whitworth with my partner for a quiet break away, coming down the drive to the hall is lovely and the locations beautiful, checking in was easy and the young lady with glasses behind the desk was very polite and helpful, our room was on the bottom floor which helped with our luggage the room it's self was a fair size and cleaned well with teas and coffees the view wasn't very good but I suppose not every window can face the park, we got plenty of pictures of the deers and even fed them which was an experience. We booked in the brasserrie on the evening we were greeted and taken to our table which was across from the kitchen seeing the chefs cook was a nice touch too, we both had terrine to start which was extremely tasty and well presented mains we had a grilled chicken and a fillet for myself the meat was good quality and again the presentation was good the dessert was a choc fondant that we shared which was gorgeous my wife loved it, the waitress who served us was very attentive and polite and helped us pick a nice wine which neither of us could pronounce ha. After our meal we enjoyed a little more wine down in the lounge area then retired to our room, the bed was very comfortable and the silence was bliss which is exactly what we wanted, the breakfast and staff the following morning before check out followed suit from the evening all in all our experience was lovely and was a well needed get away hopefully we'll be back soon for more wine food and sleep.

"Lovely location, large room, excellent breakfast"

27/06/2017

Lovely location set within a country park with lake, woodland walks and roaming deer instantly presents a relaxing feel. Our room (17) was very large and comfortable, and situated at the rear of the building overlooking a wooded dell and water wheel. This dell provided a lovely place to stroll in the evenings. The bathroom had no bath, just a walk-in shower. There was the usual refreshment tray with biscuits, and there was a wall mounted trouser press. Breakfast was excellent and deserves full marks. Good selection of cold items and fruit juices, but it was the cooked breakfast that stood out. Freshly prepared, plentiful, and served piping hot. A computer is available in the reception area for guests use, and guests can purchase deer food to feed the deer which rather in front of the hotel. However the hotel does not seem to recognise Best Western Reward members,

We recently stayed at this hotel for my sons wedding. The reception staff were very helpful but the waiting staff were run off there feet and some had a bad arritude. We had friends that came with us and one is gluten free. We asked several times before we arrived to make sure they catered for this and they assured us they did. At the wedding breakfast everything they gave her she asked if it was gluten free and they assured her it was. Then she became very ill and realised that it wasn't gluten free!! We were disgusted that they had lied and put her at such a risk, it spoilt the whole day.

Dear Maddyann66 Thank you for your review posted here on Trip Advisor, having been fully informed to the situation in relation to the issue as highlighted in your review, once again please excepted my sincerer apologises. I understand the duty Manager on the day who dealt with the situation and the illness was fully aware of the dietary requirements as, as you state noted on the correspondence, along with the Chef. I too have now spoken to the team involved in the matter, and still cannot understand how the illness came about, as like on many occasions we followed the procedures in place to deal with all dietary requests. I have instructed the Head Chef to fully review the measures we have in place to ensure we are fully complaint with current legislation. Once again please except my sincere apologise and thank you for your review. Yours sincerely Christopher Ashby

My wife and I have just returned from a 2 day 'Secret Escapes' stay and would recommend the experience. Hotel is quite charming and set in lovely grounds with the added bonus of the local wildlife especially the deer almost at your front door. Food was good (especially the cooked breakfast) and would highly recommend Steak night on Tuesdays in particular - very tasty and excellent value for money. Bar prices were reasonable for a hotel. Staff were very helpful - especially the grounds/maintenance staff who were kind enough to help with replacing a flat tyre in the rain on the morning of checkout.

Hello Thank you for your review posted here on Trip Advisor following your two night stay with us, fantastic to read how much you really enjoyed all aspects of your time spent with us from the grounds Deer and highlighting the very popular Steak Nights on Tuesdays. Great to read how Tim & Brian part of the grounds team help you on the morning of your departure, helping replace your flat tyre, not sure what Tim meant when he said "it was not too bad as it was only flat at the bottom"? we do hope to see you again in the future Kind regards Christopher Ashby

"Sunday lunch"

21/06/2017

The food itself was excellent, we all had Sunday lunch, the pork was gorgeous! However the service left a lot to be desired, sat outside when we first arrived, had to chase up a round of drinks the waiter said he would bring outside but never did, salt seller empty, filthy wine glass, no horseradish sauce? (Yes little things but surely these should be checked at the beginning of service) also an extremely rude family let their children watch peppa pig at full volume on their iPads disturbing everyone other table in the restaurant, maybe a little whisper in the parents ear from staff would have been appropriate? The grounds are beautiful and even got to view some of the rooms with a wedding fayre being on, yes I'd go back, hopefully to better service.

19/06/2017

Stayed here for 2 nights for wife's birthday on a secret escapes deal with dinner on first night & breakfast both days included. First impression was good really nice large country house & large well kept gardens. Quick check in, room was big with everything you needed but really hot at all times even with radiator off. When for meal at 7.30pm had to wait for 5 minutes in corridor for table to be set, ordered food but not asked what drinks we wanted when asked for wine menu was told it's being updated but had them in bar area food took about an hour to be served while waiting 2 people had asked for different chips as they looked burnt but was told they was triple cooked but not usual colour, I had these with my steak & they was ok steak was excellent. After meal went to the bar for drinks had to wait for staff to come serve this was ongoing while we was there on both nights. Needs to be staffed at all times. Lady who I guessed was front of house or manager argued with other staff in front of guests & one girl walked out after being spoken too. Breakfast was really good on both mornings with a good choice & fresh cooked food. Breakfast staff was really professional & polite & worked really hard. Has potential to be a great hotel.

"Good location - poor service"

18/06/2017

The hotel is in an attractive country setting – but unfortunately remains over decorated and rather down-market. We found the food very ordinary and the service slapdash. Many of the dining room staff require further training, especially on how to clear a table between courses. Although our room was large and quite comfortable, the housekeeping over three days was very much hit and miss. Clean towels would have been nice. This hotel thinks it is posh – but sadly isn't.

We stayed overnight in an executive room which had two windows overlooking the fabulous grounds. We walked through the deer park and around the lake. Very friendly staff and a delightful place. We had an excellent dinner in the brassiere , followed by a good sleep in the very comfortable bed. Full English breakfast in the library the next morning. A really excellent stay, I can't wait to go back. Loved it.

11/06/2017

Stayed with wife and parents in law - deer park was, as everyone says, fantastic. Never stayed somewhere with deer so tame before, this is ideal for families with children. As well as that though it is a beautiful hotel in its own right - all of the staff were friendly and welcoming from the moment we got there. I asked about the history of the place and Jonathan at reception took us on a complete tour of the building, filling us in on the history of it (back to the Jacobean period as I recall) and then lent us a book on it! Lets face it, you don't get that with the Marriott! :)

"Friendly and comfortable"

04/06/2017

Fantastic surroundings with a deer park right outside the front of the hotel. We stayed 4 nights and found the staff to be helpful and very friendly. The room was very comfortable, well appointed, had a 4 poster bed ( room 6 ) and a great view from the front of the hotel over the deer park ( which you can wander among and feed if you wish ). The food was very good, there was a varied menu and it was reasonably priced. Location is excellent for Durham ( prob a 15/20 minute drive) but also not a bad drive to Castle Barnard (30 mins) and a bit further to Northallerton, a couple of very interesting market towns. Well worth a stay.

"What a lovely relaxing Hotel (1st Class)"

03/06/2017

My wife & I have just had one of the most relaxing two nights stay at The Whitworth Hall Hotel, checking in and out with Johnathan was a breeze, Lal behind the bar is full of useful information and he went that extra mile, in fact all the staff were great they all made us feel so very welcome. The food was excellent both evening meal & breakfast, lovely room kitted out with a large fan because the sun was out for a change. Feeding the Deer is a must buy a bag of food from reception and you can actually join them in the park. Highly recommended & we will return. Neil & Samantha Larkin 1st to 3rd June 2017.

"Feeding the deer"

29/05/2017

We booked a one night stay with Secret Escapes which included a two course dinner, glass of wine and breakfast. This really was very good value. The hotel was lovely and the staff were so friendly and helpful. The food was better than we expected and it was lovely to have breakfast cooked to order. Feeding the deer is a definite must although, as some reviewers have already mentioned, it can be a little intimidating. Hopefully we will return and maybe stay longer.

"Sunday lunch at the hotel"

3
28/05/2017

A very limited choice for each of the three courses of Sunday lunch on offer. Food acceptable but not outstanding. Main complaint was that a request for hot milk to go with the coffee was met with bewilderment, and it appeared to be too demanding a request. After at least three requests to the waitresses had failed to produce any hot milk, and at least 10 minutes had passed, by which time the coffee was no longer hot, and it seemed that hot milk (if it appeared at all) and cold coffee was no alternative to cold milk and hot coffee, so we left. The dining room management were completely unable or unwilling to understand the complaint. The waitress was willing to help, but unable to cope, and I believe that a more experienced staff member should have been able to help out.

"Three night stay in the excellent Whitworth Hall Hotel"

28/05/2017

Stayed yet again in this wonderful hotel after an absence of about 18 months! This is such a delightful hotel with really first class staff who are friendly and helpful. This hotel remains as one of my favourites and I have not one thought of anything negative about the place. Special mention yet again of Lal who is so diplomatic, pleasing and friendly. Nothing is too much trouble and he has a terrific memory. The hotel is out of town and a delightful rural setting perfect for functions such as weddings. The deer in the field very close by are also friendly but are only interested in being fed... mmm, that is what a lot of people are like! I'll be back!

"Better than its star rating"

5
25/05/2017

Stayed here for one night midweek, and was highly impressed. Although only rated as 3*, the hotel has the quality, decor and ambiance of a higher rated hotel. Staff were friendly & efficient, the room was spacious and very well appointed. The public rooms were lovely and the food was first class (banoffee pie excepted, - but I did discuss that with a member of staff). The Tuesday "steak night" offer was exceptionally good value & the steaks were delicious and perfectly cooked. But the highlight of a stay here has to be feeding the deer in the park within the hotel grounds. Such a magical and unexpected experience! Thanks to all the staff at Whitworth Hall for making our stay so enjoyable.

"Excellent stay"

23/05/2017

Booked in for one night and selected a superior room. Reception was quick and easy. Room was good size with large bathroom and well equipped. The outlook was overlooking the deer park and is very pleasant on the eye. Only room negative was state of carpet which could do with a deep clean. Rest of the hotel was impressive for a 3 star hotel, with very nice décor throughout. All staff were pleasant and courteous from gardeners up. The unique selling point is the hotel location set in magnificent grounds with fallow deer galore. For £1 deer food is available for purchase and you can go into the deer compound to feed them. Beware these deer are cunning and can recognise the tell tale brown paper bag from 100yards away! To be confronted by 20 plus deer is quite alarming, as they try to steal their next snack away from you-just be aware a bit intimidating as they surround you. Breakfast was fine large choice available apart from partner's veggie sausages. All in all one of the best 3 star hotels we have stayed in- well done one and all.

"Very relaxing"

Beautiful old hotel kept in excellent condition set in 75 acres of luscious green fields and trees with deer wondering around, even a lake for fishing.the staff were very friendly and helpful. The bedroom was large well fitted out with ensuite. Plenty of outside sitting areas and walks.

"Great Value Weekend Break"

17/05/2017

We will always remember this stay as the weekend Newcastle were promoted back to the Premier League! We booked a 2 night break through Secret Escapes which included dinner and a glass of wine on the first night. Subsequently we needed an extra night and rang the hotel direct. They were very helpful, gave us a room at a good rate and made sure we had the same room for 3 nights. The hotel is set in large grounds which includes a deer park and it is possible to walk the grounds. If you are looking for somewhere to visit, try Raby Castle We enjoyed our stay. Reception were very welcoming. Our twin room was clean, spacious and comfortable with good wifi. There was loads of very hot water – something we value greatly. All the staff were very friendly. Dinner was enjoyable with a reasonable choice of dishes and a good wine list. Breakfast was superb - excellent choice including a “cooked for you” service. Ingredients are locally sourced and full of flavour. I have 2 small criticisms, neither of which would stop me staying here again. (1) Service in the restaurant was sporadic. I don't expect Michelin star service in a hotel of this level, but service at dinner was a bit casual. At breakfast it took a while to order and on one day amidst a lot of guests attending a wedding, we were shown to our table but no-one took our order for 10 minutes and then we were asked if we were waiting for drinks and served someone else's toast – all a bit chaotic. The breakfast when we got it was worth waiting for. (2) Having pulled up the covers on my bed in the morning we returned to find that whilst the pillows had been plumped up, the sheets had not been straightened and were left creased. Overall a good experience and we would stay again when in the area.

Stayed at Whitworth Hall hotel for our wedding anniversary for one night on a Sunday. We got an excellent deal on a four poster bedroom and breakfast. The room was gorgeous (room 12) had everything you needed and more. Lovely walk around the deer park on the afternoon, luckily the weather was kind to us. The hotel is both modern and old with some lovely art and paintings scattered around the entire hotel. Check out the little Banksy mouse in the female toilets. We ate in the Brasserie on the evening because the library restaurant is closed on a Sunday unfortunately. The food was good. All the staff were lovely, especially Gina, she made us feel very welcomed. Breakfast in the morning is excellent, one of the best we've had. Would certainly stay here again and recommend it highly.

We spent one night here and we stay in the lovely room with nice decoration. The reception is very nice and helpful. The atmosphere of the hotel is good. The breakfast is excellent. There is a deer park in front of the hotel that you can feed them.

"Two night break"

01/05/2017

Booked via Secret Escapes , easy booking and all dealings with hotel very good . The Hotel is nice in lovely surroundings, rooms are nice and all staff friendly . I would say the hotel is more suited to Weddings / partys judging by the layout of the building. The bar area is set out with large sofas which isn't very user friendly . The one thing that let down our break was that the evening meal was served in a conservatory and it was freezing . I could not understand why meals where served in there as next door was a perfectly good dinning room where breakfast was served. The food itself was poor , my husband had fish and chips and the batter although brown on the outside was not cooked underneath . We choose not to pay to dine in the cold on our second evening .

Thirteen of us had afternoon tea at Whitworth Hall served in the Garden Room. It was beautifully presented, plenty of choice and excellent service by very attentive staff. We couldn't fault it. The hotel is situated in lovely manicured gardens complete with a deer park.

Had one night at the hotel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Room was huge and looked over the deer park. Breakfast was delicious and plenty to choose from. Staff were very friendly. Loved feeding the deer. Would definitely go again.

Had a two night break at Whitworth Hall Hotel, staff very friendly and helpful. Food excellent, room comfortable very clean and spacious. The grounds are beautiful and the deer park an experience all should sample. It puts a smile on faces of both young and old. It was nice to have breakfast whilst watching the deer playing. There are some nice non taxing walks around the area. The River Wear is not that far from the hotel and there are walks along the banks. We don't normally go back to a place we have previously visited but would return to this hotel. Thank you to the staff for for making our short stay a memorable one.

Thank you for such a wonderful review posted here on Trip Advisor following recent stay with us, great to read how much you enjoyed the Deer Park, we will be expecting the first lot of new fawns over the coming weeks, a great time, to see them. Thank you for all your kind words and we do hope to see you again in the near future. Kind Regards Christopher Ashby

20/04/2017

We stayed over the Easter weekend on a Secret Escapes break. On the positive side the hotel's grounds and surroundings are beautiful and the hotel itself is well-kept and very clean. There was plenty of choice at breakfast including some unusual items such as pigs' cheeks, and our various choices over three mornings consisted of good quality ingredients which were perfectly cooked - especially the fish. We paid no extra for staying over Easter and on the whole the break was good value. On the negative side our room smelled of cigarette smoke, we had no wifi even though this was reported to the staff on several occasions and our room looked out onto the rubbish bins. I suspect this is a room kept for those on special offers. in addition, our deal included a 2 course meal in the Brasserie on our first night. My husband had lamb which he described as good, but his dessert of Banoffie Pie contained a runny syrup like sauce instead of the usual caramel - not nice. My choice of cheese souffle was OK but whoever produced it obviously had no understanding of the fact that the French word souffle means 'breath' or 'puff - it was dense and flat. My dessert was on the menu as white chocolate mousse with raspberries and was chosen because raspberries are my favourite fruit. However, when it arrived I was surprised to find there were no raspberries. This was mentioned to the waiter who came back a few minutes later with a small ramekin of what looked like the last dregs of a packet of frozen raspberries - maybe a tablespoon's worth of bits. There was not a single whole raspberry and they tasted stale and rubbery. The latter experience put us off eating at the hotel other than our breakfasts. My observation is that with a little TLC and attention to detail this hotel could be fantastic. Maybe a little honesty is needed too: for example, telling us from the beginning that there was no wifi in our room and saying when my dessert was ordered that there were no raspberries. Not everyone can have a fantastic view but the bins could have been moved and the storage area outside our room made more aesthetically pleasing with some flowers in pots etc.

Stayed here on a Secret Escapes deal. Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings. Everything about the stay was good apart from service at breakfast. On both days the service was very slow. It took about 15 minutes for our order to be taken and as long again to wait for it arriving. The staff on the second day were very apologetic but the two ladies on Good Friday left a lot to be desired. We were given cold toast and never asked if we wanted more or if we wanted more tea. We did note that they spent a long time chatting to the family on the next table and heard them being offered more tea and toast. On a plus point the staff at dinner were great and couldn't do enough for you. Would stay here again though.

15/04/2017

Bought a short stay on a well known voucher website. It was delightful. The hotel itself is very traditional, though lovely throughout and the grounds are beautiful. The room was lovely. The deer are obviously used to visitors and will happily feed from your hand. The food was nothing short of excellent and very reasonably priced. So much so that after dinner the first evening (which was part of the deal) we chose to eat there the second night. Plenty of variety for included breakfast etc, salmon and eggs/lamb kidneys/ eggs Benedict. Friendly and helpful staff. All in all a gem, we'd definitely visit again .

"If only the outside made up for the inside!"

11/04/2017

Gorgeous grounds with wild deer.....but inside is old and tired and throughout just generally needs a good cleaning. Many staff were very friendly and helpful but also some did not look as smart as they could and should. Wifi is poor so not the best stop for business travellers. It is a shame with such nice outdoor surroundings! The bed in the room was lumpy and each time somebody uses the main staircase, the building seems to shake so not the best nights sleep.....think it needs some investment and TLC!

We stayed here with friends for one night on a deal. The hotel is very traditional really nice. The surroundings are tranquil and peaceful, feeding the deer on Saturday morning was a joy. The staff were very helpful and friendly will definately return in the future.

"A quirky country house hotel"

4
10/04/2017

This country house hotel is situated within a rural idyll. Lovely sweeping parkland surrounds the hotel and even though little remains of the original 18th century mansion, Whitworth Hall continues to provide a quiet and comfortable haven for the leisure traveller. The décor inside could be described as quirky, with modern art sitting uneasily alongside more traditional country house design and as needs must, the large number of weddings held at the hotel, perhaps dominated the style of reception rooms. Unfortunately, though staff were welcoming, there appeared, at least during our stay, some challenges in providing the full range of dinner options. I hope that this was just a glitch in kitchen staff availability. There was also an air of disappointment from some staff when we chose to arrive for our evening meal after 8p.m. Expecting to linger over our food and wine, we were surprised that staff seemed to disappear shortly after 9p.m. and puddings were often difficult to order. However, the hotel breakfasts were delicious and set us up for each day's enjoyable exploration of the surrounding heritage and attractions.

Helpful staff, lovely rooms with good amenities. Food was very good, fair choices and a superb breakfast choice. The park setting is glorious. Highly recommended for both single business, couples or families. Deer food for the kiddies to feed the extensive herd of deer and a small kiddies playground in the park.

Fabulous place. Lovely rooms and very friendly service and staff, who cant do enough for you. Bedrooms very well furnished and the huge bed was very comfortable, a positive experience. The whole place was very clean and no complaints to that effect. This location is also used for weddings. The grounds open up and lots of deer roam in the field opposite the reception. Very nice place to stay. The only downside was the size of portions for meals . Feel they could be larger portions for the amount one pays, other than that will definitely visit again.

This is a first for me reviewing a hotle on the internet but i felt I need to have my say. The hotle is placed on a beautiful piece of landscape with fantastic gardens and wildlife. The traditional county hotle was very well kept with traditional rooms and reception areas. My wife and I stayed only for one night sadly we would love to have stayed more. The rooms are very comfortable with great, clean, plentiful facilities, very comfortable beds and our room was surprisingly spacious. The staff at this hotle are second to non very warm and welcoming everyone is so friendly and always looking to help. We had dinner in one of the main restaurants, again in keeping with the fantastic country look. The two girls who served us are a credit to that business. "Benny" a charming young lady that I believe is European was very knowledgeable in regards to the menu helping us with both food and wine the hole experience was fantastic. The only thing I would pick up on is portion sizes there isn't a great deal of food for the money you pay. I was told the portion sizes where bigger in a different restaurant with in the hotle We finished our night with a night cap in the lounge bar this area was very comfortable warm and cosy. Having just finished breakfast I can tell you it was delicious the restaurant was the same as last night but new staff again very warm and very welcoming Thank you whitworth hall We will definitely see you again soon

19/11/2016

This Hotel, a couple of miles out of Spennymoor, is a great rural country house type hotel. I have been here before, this time I had a chance to take some photo's, which I have shared. My room on the first floor was a good size with good quality furnishings, including two chairs and a side table. The Bathroom had a full sized suit, and a shower over the bath, with good water pressure. Only downside for me as a business user the internet signal was very poor, an issue I have experienced here before, so I had to use my phone as a hot spot, also tricky as there was very little phone reception for EE. There are two restaurants, with separate menus, so check the menus out first, however the food and service is excellent in both. Overall an excellent stay and I will be back.

13/11/2016

We had our wedding here at the weekend, and could not have enjoyed it more. I would strongly recommend for anyone looking for a wedding venue. All of the staff were amazing, and made the day run smoothly. From the lovely smiley receptionist, to all the waiters and waitresses, everyone made a massive effort to make sure we had the best day ever. Extra thanks to our wedding coordinator Jackie, who just worked so hard, and listened carefully to everything I said. She was absolutely brilliant when one of my suppliers didn't do everything they were meant to, and her and the staff turned it around so that nothing was affected. The food was delicious. I enjoyed every mouthful and cleared every plate of every course, and other guests mentioned how good it was too. Such an effort was made to produce delicious dishes for my friend who is vegan and gluten intolerant, and she also enjoyed it all. The venue is beautiful, and the bridal suite was really special. We will undoubtedly be back whether it's for a meal, or for a stay to celebrate our anniversary. We were also delighted to receive a gift from the hotel of Champagne glasses with deer on, that we will truly treasure forever. From the very first contact with David, another wedding coordinator, the support we had with our special day was seamless, and we would both like to thank each and every member of staff involved for giving us one of the best days of our lives. Tim and Gemma

Stayed here with my husband on 10th November. A lovely comfortable hotel with beautiful grounds. Dinner was served in the conservatory which on a November night was a wee bit chilly. Would have preferred to eat where we had breakfast the following morning. Evening meal ok but the breakfast was excellent. Friendly and professional staff. Will need to visit in the summer to take full advantage of the grounds.

"Short Break Silver Wedding Celebration"

11/11/2016

We stayed here for two nights to celebrate our Silver Wedding. We were given a warm welcome and our suitcase was taken upstairs to our room. The room was lovely overlooking the park with a herd of fallow deer. The room was large with a comfortable sofa, plenty of tea and coffee,a coffee maker and a mini fridge containing a jug of fresh milk and bottled water. The en-suite had a jacuzzi bath and a good shower with plenty of hot water. The bed was comfortable with a feather mattress topper. Our first evening meal was in the Brasserie and was a limited choice set menu as one night we booked was an offer. The second night we ate in the Library dining room which had both the Brasserie and A la Carte menues. Both meals were delicious and very well presented. The breakfast on both days was lovely with an excellent choice of both hot and cold food, Food was cooked to order and was nice and hot. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would stay again if we were in the area. The only slight criticism is that it was a bit chilly in certain areas, although there was a roaring fire in the entrance lounge.

10/11/2016

This ticked all the boxes. We were looking for a great value break - countryside location but close to things to do, in this case the ancient city of Durham, and with good food - Whitworth Hall fitted the bill perfectly. To arrive to pretty deer looking over the fence was quite charming and the big smile by an efficient receptionist was a great welcome. The autumn colour was a bonus. We loved it and will be back soon. Thank you to all the staff.

"Best Western - Worst Western"

08/11/2016

Attended a family wedding here and although they had a removable ramp at the main entrance the doors were heavy and no one on standby to assist. When inside the reception desk was too high to communicate with the staff behind it especially if you're wheelchair bound and the disabled toilet was poor - the area shared it's self with a baby changing station and the smell was disgusting and made much worse by having mess all over the floor. The toilet seat wasn't safe and after reporting the facts the door was locked and an "Out of Order" sign put up. The pathway to the church was small stones which was extremely dangerous to get through if you're in a wheelchair and the church doesn't have a place for you no matter where you are in the wedding party so it's the back for those of us in wheelchairs. Coming out of the church and seeing a proper path was great only to find it took you down a small path near a busy country road out of the grounds of the hotel on a 5mile hike. Definitely not good if you are or any one in your party is in a wheelchair - think again for god sake!

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Madam Once again, as set out in my letter to you, following your visit here at Whitworth Hall, whilst attending your sister's wedding, I would like to offer my sincere apologies to you. As in my letter and pictures sent to you, I am still a little confused as to the comments about the reception desk, while I admit the front of the reception desk is high, we do as pointed out have and area to the left, set out lower to help wheelchair users. Also as per my letter I am unable to comment on comments made in relation to the church and the path around the area. We did, as you say have to place the toilet out of order, after it had been pointed out, by you about the seat becoming detached, but we also made available a ground floor room for use, we have of course had the seat replaced, with the manufactures recommend product. Once again thank you for both you letter and review, we will use all of them in a way to improve our facilities for all. Yours sincerely Christopher Ashby

This place has always been a favourite of mine and the wifes after last two visits will not be returning. Service staff was very rude and drinking alcohol on shift. Not to mention food has recently gone from one of the best around to serving luke warm average food i would prefer maccyds to what we have experienced last two visits.

"Whitworth is Worth It!"

Much has been said of the deer (hugely endearing) and the suitability of this hotel for weddings, all of which is obvious to even the casual guest looking for a few days' peace and quiet - which is exactly what we were after. For a 3-star hotel the accommodation and food were excellent, and although full board prices are at the top end of the price range we felt it was worth the money. Our "executive" room was spacious and comfortable, with good facilities apart from limited bathroom shelving, and we overlooked the deer park at the front. The hotel has a rather public bar beside the grand staircase, complete with lots of bookshelves to browse, and there is a comfortable residents' lounge nearby. Breakfasts were most enjoyable despite a limited buffet, with most items being freshly cooked to order, and having opted to dine in each evening our choice was slightly restricted by the cosy Library restaurant being closed Sundays and Mondays. However, the more austere conservatory Brasserie with its tiled floor was fine although it had a more predictable menu. The Library has fine dining as its main attraction, but in both locations the food was high quality and well presented; drinks were reasonably priced. In all areas the staff were low-key, pleasant and polite, and there was definitely a calm and relaxed feel to the whole establishment. Parking provision at the hotel is excellent, and despite its rural location it is only a short drive into Durham City. We also took the opportunity to visit the Durham Dales and coast, and the several of the north Yorkshire coastal resorts - all of which are within easy reach. We were highly satisfied with our stay, which would have been nearly flawless if the Library restaurant had been open throughout.

I was dining in the brasserie which was lovely and the lovely Gina was my waitress couldn't fault her at all or the gentlemen Lal! BUT!!!!! There was a couple of service girls very rude slamming the doors and nattering between one another in the corridor. Went down to the bar for a final drink and one of them was running through the bar all giggling not interacting with guests just following one another like lost puppies! Other then this hotel is lovely and Receptionist Deborah was very pleasent

Well what can I say! This hotel is amazing. My husband and I got this as a treat for my husbands 40th birthday. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds, the drive up to the hotel is beautiful the views are gorgeous. We stayed in a standard room which was lovely, clean and fresh. We ate in the conservatory on the evening, the food was amazing, presented very well and very tasty. The staff at the hotel are all very lovely and helpful, I would like the mention Lynn would was absolutely lovely to my husband and my self. Overall this hotel is a lovely place to spend to quality time with your loved ones. And of course the little added bonus is the deer that live within the hotel grounds, which your aloud to feed, you can buy bags of feed from reception for £1 per bag. My husband and I will definitely be back to spend another night here.

19/10/2016

My mum and I stayed in a twin room. The room was nice and the bathroom lovely. Not much of a view, we had a downstairs room which faced a courtyard. The breakfast was excellent and staff very attentive. The only downfall was dinner on the Monday. The normal restaurant was closed so we had to eat in the conservatory which was very cold.it would have been ok if you had jumpers on but I was dress to eat in a hotel restaurant which are usually warm. Made for a very unpleasant dining experience. The Drive to the hotel with the herd of deer made it look very impressive. Durham unniversity and the Beamish museum is a must. Fantastic!!!!

I needed a good hotel in a hurry and found this lovely country house in the middle of a deer park. What a find. I have now stayed here several times and why wouldn't you when its about the same price as a premier inn on the A1. Foods great service is good and the price of a pint is about the same as Surrey. interestingly the bar staff always apologise about the price of the beer. Its still cheap to me in such great surroundings. Keep it up guys.

Really nice venue set on its own private estate. Our day was great from start until finish. The food we received was top quality and we really enjoyed being able to go and hand feed the deer on the estate. Only bad thing about the day was the weather but that couldn't be helped. Would definitely recommend/return to whitworth hall again

This is a really good hotel. We stayed in the deluxe four poster bedroom, the room was very grand with a very comfortable bed ! The shower was not so good but everything else was nice in the room. We had dinner in the library restaurant the food was excellent & competitively priced too. The service very friendly as well The hotel is set in a dear park with loads of dear that you can feed with food bought from reception for a small fee I would recommend this hotel & we would definitely stay here again !

Although my Granddaughter and I only stayed the one night this time, I love this hotel and will definitely return in the near future, It is in a beautiful setting and we had a lovely room although at the back of the hotel. The beds were extremely comfortable and breakfast was good.

Beautiful hotel. Relaxed and the most fantastic food in the library restaurant. The chef is innovative and served us the most fantastic food. Cannot wait to return. Unfortunately a few things in room needed fixing and disappointed by view of bin store. However I suppose the hotel cannot do anything about this. Beautiful grounds.

My wife and I stayed 3 nights in Oct. 2016. The hotel is in a country estate near Spennymnoor, a small town in County Durham. It;s reasonably close to Durham city but also interesting places such as Barnard Castle and scenic upper Teesdale. The public rooms are in the former grand house, with well-designed extensions. In the park around the hotel is a charming herd of fallow deer and a small lake. At one side is a sunken shrub garden with a water-wheel formerly fed from the lake; this area is lit at night by fairy-lights. The hotel's owner formerly lived in the house and clearly cares a great deal about its nearly-1000-year history and heritage; the outline provided in the Guest Info. folder was more than usually interesting.and very well-written. There are two restaurants, one informal and one slightly more formal. Dinners in both were to a high standard with intetesting menus using local produce. Wines were reasonably priced; by-the-glass malbec was very enjoyable. Our "standard" bedroom was well sized, comfortable and well-appointed and maintained. The furniture showed the odd little sign of wear but is of good quality and perfectly acceptable. The hotel staff, from reception to restaurant to housekeeping, were exceptionally friendly and seemed to take a lot of pride in the hotel. This made us feel very much at home and welcome even within the space of the 3 days.

When entering the hotel grounds and driving along the road into the hotel you are immediately met with the stunning view of the grounds and the beautiful deer. This is a lovely place for a quiet getaway, but very near to the centre of Durham. I went with my sister and we stayed in one of the twin rooms. The bedroom and bathroom were spotless. Nice spacious room, good toiletries in the bathroom (conditioner too which is great!). Extensive grounds and you can go for nice long walks and also get to feed the deer if you want to. Each and every staff member were all extremely friendly and helpful which just makes your stay even better. We stayed on a dinner bed and breakfast deal which was amazing value. The food was lovely, very big portions though - maybe a bit too big. Nice cooked breakfast only tiny wee thing was poached eggs not quite like you usually get in hotels they looked more like fried eggs (as I am dire at making them myself I love getting them in hotel!!). Also wine list for dinner had a great selection and prices to suit everyone. I would go back here.

The location is great; set in a deer park. Our room was comfortable and well-appointed. The hotel was, in general, clean and comfortable. The staff were friendly and the beer (Black Sheep) was good, but the whole was let down by the kitchen. Our food was disappointing, both at dinner and at breakfast. They could do with sending someone to see how they do it at Crooklands!

It was great to read how you enjoyed the Black Sheep Beer, a favourite of mine, and thank you for your comment about the team. Once again thank you for your review, and I hope to speak to you soon. I stayed here for a one night break in August on DBB was great. The staff were friendly the room was clean and tidy and comfortable. The hotel itself is cosy and comfortable nice snug bar and also some lovely grounds. The deer park was amazing and you could buy deer food from the reception in the hotel for £1 a bag. The restaurant Library was lovely the food was nice we ate off the seat menu as we were on DBB. The breakfast was hearty and nice they brought it to your table. Same as dinner service was great to. Would defintely go back for another trip soon.

It was a great day out for the family I would of payed good money to see my little girls face when the rain dear came up to her but what can say it cost nothing to access all of this wonderful place. And people say nothing in life is free hmmm well this day out was and the staff are very nice will go again

"Another excellent stay. Staff brilliant but poor fillet steak on one night"

We stopped 12 months previously and the stay was fantastic. Food in the library restaurant on that stay was one of the best meals I had ever had. The hotel is in beautiful grounds and is a must visit. We then booked in June 2016 for a return visit in August 2016 on a 2 night DBB staying in the shaftoe suite. On arrival at the hotel set within its own magnificent grounds you can see the deer grazing its gardens, stream, fishing lake and church. Checked into the hotel and was then told library restaurant menu was not available on a Sunday or Monday evening. I wish I'd been told that on booking. The manageress Deborah then gave us the library restaurant menu as well as the Brasserie menu and gave us the option to choose and if the chef could do the food we wanted we could have it. She said we could still eat in the library as well. We selected food of the brasserie menu and ate in the library which is a lovely setting. I ordered fillet steak medium and my partner ordered rib eye medium rare Shame there was no venison on the menu on this occasion. The steaks came My partners was done to perfection. Mine was well done overcooked and grey in middle so it was returned to the kitchen. The next fillet steak came out undercooked and was rare with blood coming out when cut this was also sent back. Waitress and manageress so apologetic and embarrassed that it was wrong again. Finally the 3rd attempt came out by this time my partner had finished her meal. The chef had sliced the fillet steak in half not what you expect or want i wanted as I didn't ask for medallions. . One medallion was medium and the other was rare needless to say was sent back and another attempt was declined. Breakfast the following morning was excellent with all food freshly cooked and really enjoyable. Before we left for a day visit to Beamish we decided to still eat in the library restaurant that evening as it was a different chef working. We selected deserts from the library restaurant menu and I decided to have another fillet steak. That evening we ate in the library restaurant and the fillet steak was perfect and so was the rest of the food. The service was excellent to. The following morning breakfast was brilliant again. After feeding the deer we checked out. The reception manageress said she would refund the meal allowance from the first night and get the General manager to contact me on his return to the hotel from his holiday. The hotel is lovely. The staff are so professional and helpful. I left the hotel happy even though one nights food had let me down. Subsequently I spoke with the General manager on his return and discussed the issues. All I can say what a nice gentleman brilliant customer service . I will be returning for another visit on our yearly tour. Thank you again. I would highly recommend this hotel and will continue to return to it.

"Wow! What a change!"

At my age, (80+), I have known this area from being a child and enjoying walks with my maternal grandfather. You might say that this colours my judgement of the Hotel. You may be right, but if you like space, in- and outdoors, great service, helpful staff, comfort, and restful nights, this is for you. The location is perfect with easy routes to all that County Durham has to offer, from Weardale inland, to sandy beaches to the East, Durham City, Beamish, Hartlepool, etc.

"Wonderful place to have a wedding reception"

5
20/09/2016

This place is ideal, it's small enough to be friendly and personal, but is big enough to be able to find a quiet corner (Not much chance at our wedding, but otherwise easily done). Its a Pretty place, I mean picture postcard pretty, with Deer in the grounds, fairy lights in the trees, a dingly dell, with a little stream, water wheel, trees, shrubs, roses, flowers all well looked after and getting better each time we visited - someone is paying very close attention to the grounds, and spending a lot of time and money making improvements. The decor is a little quirky, with the enormous ceiling murals in the stairwell. I thought the place was clean, well decorated throughout, didn't notice scuff marks, peeling paper or yellowing paint anywhere. The room our reception was in was very pretty, the larger of the two function suites, and suited our purposes very well. Bedrooms - we stayed in Room 4 a Bridal room - my (new) wife found the bed a little hard, it is perfect for me, it was also a little warm, but we had windows open, but still too warm - not exactly the hotels fault - you can't blame them for weather and a fan was included in the room, AC is an unusual feature in most Victorian (?) country houses. Service. the staff were attentive, well presented, polite and professional - you didn't really notice them being there, but they seemed to cater very well for all of our guests and we wanted for nothing all day, Simon, one of the staff, deserves a mention he was excellent and should be commended for his superb customer care. I don't often tip particularly big but left a decent tip (for me anyway) which is an indication of how I felt about the service we received. The food. the food was, exactly what we had asked for, it was all tasty and well presented and was served quickly and efficiently from what I could see - obviously we were on the top table and got served first, but I looked around and no one waited very long as far as I could tell. Breakfast Was a buffet style affair, with additional things you could ask for from a menu that were included in the breakfast cost - superb! excellent! I think there was something for everyone and nobody left wishing that they'd been able to have something else or that there wasn't enough of something. Drinks It's a hotel, expect to pay hotel prices, and not cheap hotel prices, but they had catered particularly for me and my friends getting bottles of my favourite real and craft ales in - so I certainly can't complain about that, plus behind the bar the spirits were mostly top end labels - no cheap chatty spirits there, they had Tanqueray Gin - mmmmmmmm gin..... Overall the atmosphere was fantastic, the staff were great, the venue was photogenic and complimented well with our whole wedding theme. Everything went off without a hitch except ourselves being hitched and we had a fantastic time. NB Almost no phone signal at all in the hotel but there is free wifi so if you have EE you can make WiFi calls, outside is better reception. No reception was blessing and helped us make the choice - along with Deer - which you can feed and pet. Thanks to all at Whitworth!

"Country house turned hotel"

17/09/2016

This hotel, located within a deer park, was a country house before its conversion. The décor is somewhat dated but clean, tidy and in keeping with the once country house. The fine dining aspect of the hotel is located in the library and the food is very good. The staff are pleasant and attentive; this comment particularly applies to the restaurant staff who made our two night stay very enjoyable. Our first morning breakfast was located in the library. Good quality, plentiful and individually cooked. Because of a wedding, and wedding guests stopping overnight, the following morning we had breakfast in the conservatory because of the large numbers, nice but not as good as the library and on this occasion the breakfast was self service. Good but not as good as the previous morning. If you want a quieter stay with a more individual service best avoid nights/mornings when a wedding is scheduled. A warning regarding the deer. It seems part of the hotel experience that you feed the deer. They are always hungry and herd around the feeder. If you are a child this can become a frightening experience so they are best fed behind the fence.

"Fantastic wedding venue "

13/09/2016

So a wedding is always glorious , and the setting for this one was fabulous . Unfortunately , I was too late to stay , but the day I had was wonderful and I would have liked to stay . The drive in , past the lake and lovely grounds , was the appetiser . Then the lovely buildings and the deer park , the inside of the hall was lovely ,beautiful and eccentric insides , and so comfortable . The building was comfortable and interesting and welcoming X The food at the wedding breakfast was very nice and the venue looked beautiful ( thanks to a very clever and creative bride !) The evening event was also comfortable and suited is very well . The inside and the outside public areas were all comfortable and interesting . Bar prices were also very reasonable . The star of the evening for me were the staff Stephen and Sarah and Matt and all the bar and waiting staff , were cheerful , helpful and efficient . The bride said that throughout their stay and planning the staff had all been fab . I had a lovely time X

"Idyllic Surroundings"

03/09/2016

An impressive venue starting with the approach to the hotel, the lake and then the herd of deer just by the hotel entrance. The receptionist was trying to deal with a telephone reservation, the sale of deer food and booking in new guests, to be fair she did manage her situation well without any outward signs of stress. The room was a good size, well equipped and well prepared. Room 20 was to the rear of the hotel overlooking the garden so was very quiet. The library restaurant and the brassiere served very good, freshly prepared and well presented food. The quality of the food was well worth the wait during "leisurely meals". The breakfast, served in the library restaurant, was equally well prepared and served by attentive staff. The only negative was being ignored by the barman who was intent on showing another member of staff how to slice lemons and limes! The acid test test - would I return, most definitely yes!

"Excellent customer service"

31/08/2016

We stayed for one night in this lovely hotel. In the grounds were a herd of deer grazing. The hotel had lovely original features and tasteful décor and was a great place to relax after a long drive. The breakfast was very tasty and severed in the old library. We had a minor issue with the shower, which had we not gone up to our room so late we would have mentioned earlier but on hearing our problem the General Manger immediately apologised and insisted on compensating us for the problem. Great place to stay with excellent friendly service.

30/08/2016

We booked into the Brasserie for lunch for my parents 61st Wedding Anniversary celebration. We were able to get the car near to the entrance door of the restaurant to drop off my elderly parents and then park the car nearby. The food and service by the attentive staff was excellent, in a pretty air conditioned room. We had great views of the deer in the fields opposite and beside the bandstand, where we could get up close to feed them afterwards! We will definitely return for another future family celebration with all of the family!

Food was lovely staff are very polite and helpful Grounds are very well kept and lovely to walk in or sit in the shade and watch the world go by Building is old and full of character Bed was huge and comfortable Bad point the room was dusty, bedside table and trouser press were thick of dust, could blow it as so thick. Toilet floor dirty only the middle was washed and behind the taps in the bath grim.

"Visit to feed the deer and walk in the grounds"

28/08/2016

Beautiful setting, very well kept grounds, beautiful building, ample parking at the back of the hotel. Very busy when we visited as there was a wedding in progress. Extremely clean, well kept. We paid for cobnuts to feed the beautiful resident deer who were very friendly and not at all shy! Visited Bobby Shaftos monument in the grounds. Well worth a visit, we would have had a meal but it was very busy as there was a wedding in progress so we chose not to.

Just had a fantastic afternoon tea at Whitworth Hall can highly recommend the children's one...my boys loved it especially the cream soda!! Staff fantastic too! Will definitely be back..gardens lovely for the kids to play in and the deer park is lovely to walk round.

"A wonderful experience and hospitality"

5
26/08/2016

Whitworth Hall Country Park Hotel has it all! Long meandering driveway to the imposing hotel, large grounds to explore and the icing on the cake is the deer park. To feed the deers is an experience not to be missed. All this on top of excellent hospitality, sumptuous interior and welcoming staff who cannot do enough for your enjoyment. You must, just must visit.

22/08/2016

Spent 2 nights, one on a voucher deal. Booking process chaotic, spoke to almost all the reception staff because they managed to loose our booking not once but twice (something about computer ) very pleasant and they did apologise for their mistakes. First impressions good, it is a lovely setting in the deer park with small lake and the Main house is pleasant ,several extensions. Nice public area as you enter. Our voucher included a meal allowance and as the restaurant was closed n the first night we asked if we could use the deal on the second - not possible - surprising as the hotel would have made a lot more money if we had...... Brasserie meal not impressive, stodgy pasta dish, lot of reliance on fried goods. Again the service was pleasant but not efficient. For example I saw someone on the next table ask for salt as thier cellar was empty - the waiter took the cellar from another table, replacing it with the empty cellar ! This was not the only time we experienced such unprofessional service. The hotel was not full, there were lots of staff around, and to be honest I felt they were more interested in chatting to each other than serving - I'm not the only person here to comment on this. Not impressed by breakfast, it was fine but have had much better from less 'upmarket' establishments. The room itself was spacious, slightly dated decor, on first impressions clean but several lapses such as broken tiles in the bathroom - where the shower barely functioned, and dust on items such as the tissue holder. I note that a lot of reviews here relate to good service for events such as weddings, and I can see it would be a delightful setting. When we left they were beginning to prepare for a large weeding in a couple of days. I kind of got the impression that this was where the attention was, not on everday customers.

"great stay"

17/08/2016

Super staff, characterful hotel, relaxing stay. Hotel grounds provide something a little different, not often you can walk amongst deer after breakfast! Convenient location for visiting Durham and also the fabulous Kyren open air show.

"Baptism"

5
14/08/2016

Joint baptism with my best friend who had their daughter baptised too at the church next door. The hotel catered for 90 and it was fantastic. We chose the Sunday lunch option but we're only expecting standard chicken etc and a poor vegetarian option. In fact, all guests could choose what they wanted from a full menu- sea bass, pasta, lamb, beef, pork. The food was beautiful, nice room, Staff attentive and on hand but never in your face. They were very patient. Lovely venue and lovely day.

"Overall a good stay"

4
12/08/2016

Overall very good. Only niggle was the free wifi - virtually no reception in my room (my colleague was OK) and no reception in the breakfast room (I didn't check the dining area). Other than that the hotel is very pleasant and a good stay.

"Amazing wedding venue"

5
04/08/2016

What a fantastic setting for a wedding venue. Beautiful grounds with the added bonus of the roaming deer. We were here for a family wedding in July and had the most amazing day. Marquee in the grounds as well as use of the hotel for a family wedding. Children (and adults!) loved the deer who were very tame and roaming in the beautifully looked after grounds. We couldn't have had a better day Breakfast the following morning was lovely with fresh mushrooms. My favourite!!! Can't fault it

"Peaceful with deers!"

03/08/2016

Set in a deer park with an easy walk through the grazing deer. There was a wedding on during our stay but this caused no problems for other guests. Staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good with a decent choice of hot and cold food.

"Whitworth Hall Wedding Venue"

02/08/2016

I had a great time as a bridesmaid for my friends wedding, from start to finish the staff here were fantastic. They were extremely helpful and professional looking after us all. The estate is a great venue for such an event and would recommend anyone to stay. The rooms are a great size and well furnished with all the amenities you need. The food served here throughout the day was great too. Thank you for a lovely weekend :)

"Afternoon Tea"

4
01/08/2016

Visited and had Afternoon Tea with my wife on her Birthday, Surroundings of the Hotel were really beautiful, but I'm sorry the Afternoon Tea was not up to the same Standard as Beamish Hall, no choice of sandwiches overall food not in the same class same with the service, and with being in the same Chain, Best Western, Really think they need to compare review and bring it up to the same standard , we have been to the Beamish Hall on numerous occasions and will continue to go, If and when Whitworth Hall becomes up to the same standard ,we shall try again ,

"Excellent accommodation, interesting service"

27/07/2016

We spent 1 night here which was very comfortable and enjoyed a rather damp walk in the park amongst the deer. The food quality was excellent although the service left a lot to be desired. We sat down in the bar and 3 staff were chatting and didn't ask if we were dining or wanted a drink. The restaurant staff were very "Faulty Towers" and although friendly didn't have a clue about table service.

27/07/2016

Visited here midweek on business and was very surprised by this hidden gem. If the competion want to see how it done pay a visit here. It is fair to say it has a couple of unfair advantages such as exellent countryside, the adjacent field with deer grazing and playing. But there is much more to this place. The high standard decor and furnishing is very much in keeping with this fine old hotel. The good service in the bar and restaraunt. The exellent value for money food and drink. Even the free wifi works well throughout the hotel and the welcome letter from reception is a nice touch. This place is worth a vist. I'm generally not easily impressed by hotels but this place does it for me and I'm happy to recomend by what I've seen and experienced

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review

"Fantastic Hotel well placed for exploring Durham and surrounding area"

5
26/07/2016

Stayed here over the weekend with my wife and 4 year old daughter. We booked using Tesco club card vouchers and were given a fantastic double room with an extra bed for my little one. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. What made it even better was being able to feed the Deer who are roaming about outside the hotel (deer food available at reception) Would definitely recommend staying here if you in the area – ideally placed for visiting Durham, Digger land and Beamish. We had room 30 which was excellent.

Celebrated my daughters wedding in this stunning location on Friday 22nd July and our day was simply perfect! This beautiful hotel is situated in the most amazing, perfectly groomed surroundings that boast a deer park, lake & immaculate walkway through "the dene" with its very own water wheel and seasonal flowers. The rooms are lovely & spacious, pristine, relaxing and extremely comfy with gorgeous views. The staff are wonderful, the food was amazing, the day was perfect!!! I can't thank Whitworth enough for a day we'll always remember & David, as a wedding co-ordination your job is really difficult but you do it so well. I can't recommend this venue enough, it's just perfect!!

25/07/2016

this location is perfect for a wedding, and the staff cant do enough for you, they are the best hotel staff that I have seen. the whole day was perfect, they organised things, which went like clockwork, a fantastic team of men and women. My best friends daughter got married and had her wedding breakfast and evening reception there, , the deer were the icing on the cake, very gentle animals, and feeding them was an experience that I wont forget. My wife and I stayed for the night, a beautiful twin , ground floor. The room was awsome, spacious, clean, and had WI-FI in the bedroom, as well as the public areas of the building. the manager ( who has a close resemblane to captain birdseye) runs his team very well, and he is very user friendly, as I had occasion to speak to him on the morning of our departure. all in all the day was PERFECT and have no issue recomending this venue .

"Fantastic location and excellent service"

23/07/2016

We booked my daughters 21st birthday party at Whitworth Hall in the Garden Room. We arranged the Sparkling Afternoon Tea for our guests and we were delighted. The staff were so friendly, helpful and attentive and the whole afternoon ran so smoothly. The room was beautifully decorated and the younger guests enjoyed exploring the grounds and of course going to see the baby deer. The food was excellent and of a very high quality. We couldn't have hoped for a better day. Many thanks!

"Lovely place to stay but wish they accepted dogs"

4
23/07/2016

We staying here for a family wedding. Perfect setting. Lovely room which was well appointed with chairs to put 'stuff' on and sockets by the bed to plug in phone/iPad. Bed incredibly comfortable - I slept till 9.30. I never sleep that late ! My only niggle was service at breakfast. The staff seemed half asleep and were slow at replenishing the buffet and it was so long before they took our order for tea and toast that we'd finished our breakfast. Having said that, the food was good and the staff friendly. They don't accept dogs (maybe because they would chase the deer roaming the grounds) so probably won't return but definitely would if they changed this policy.

"Simply Superb!!"

22/07/2016

An really lovely hotel set in beautiful grounds, the hotel is only 7 miles from the City of Durham however it sits in acres of countyside with its own fishing pond and deer roaming around (which you can feed). Its ideal for a peaceful retreat. Our twin room was superb, very spacious, very well decorated with all the additions of tea/coffee, trouser press, toiletries in the bathroom and plenty of really soft towels!! One of my pet hates are shower curtains but Whitworth have glass shower screens. Rest of the hotel is well decorated and very clean. There's a wonderful garden room to sit in and have afternoon tea or just coffee, the brasserie food was good, average prices. Breakfast was served in the library, very tasty with good quality products. The staff here really do make your stay great, they are very friendly, happy to have a chat or help with you with suggestions of places to visit. Having spoken to a few of them, you can tell they enjoy working there which is testament to the management team. If I had to criticise something, the cleaners started outside our room both mornings so the vacumn cleaner was being used at 8am!! Would visit here again with the kids next time as they will love the deer and grounds. Its rated as a 3*, I would say its well worth a 4*, there's no spa facilities, personally I feel this would spoil the quaintness of the hotel.

A very nice property with a lot of potential, public area pretty decent, and restaurant very lovely (old square paneled room, makes for very mellow dining). Let down by very dated rooms and bathrooms (Lino flooring, old shower in a bath). Car really needed here, location about £18 in a taxi from Durham.

After reading some of the other reviews I didn't expect much, however my stay was delightful. The room was fine but the food and the service were superb, the maitre d was charming and all the staff were very patient and accommodating about my guests eating late and taking a long time over their meal. The staff graciously helped us to move our drinks from the bar when their meal was ready and nothing appeared to be too much trouble. I would gladly stay again, and indeed am looking for an occasion to do so!

This was a special surprise for my wife and I as our daughter had booked this for a family weekend to celebrate our Golden Wedding. We were really impressed with the location, hotel, staff, the four poster bedroom and food. There are walks around the grounds and lake and you can feed the deer. Historically the Hall was the home of "Bobby Shaftoe" in all a very interesting hotel. Will definitely come back again

We took advantage of a deal to catch up with friends from Yorkshire. As a result of recent illness one of our friends was wheelchair bound and as such he required to be " made a fuss of " Well the staff here did just that so well done to all involved. The whole experience was very nice and we would certainly do it again.

"Faded round the edges but the deers make up for it"

23/06/2016

The building and grounds are beautiful. Inside is frankly looking a bit worn around the edges. This isn't a "luxury" hotel by any means. I'd describe it as a holiday inn/travel lodge but in a historic building. Good cooked breakfast selection but limited options if you don't want a fry up a cereal. BUT there's a deer park! With deer! Which you can feed! And really that's why you go there. We visited as students a decade ago and went again last weekend. So overlook the slightly tatty surroundings and enjoy petting the bambis.

Thank you first of all for returning to Whitworth Hall and for your review. It was great to read how much you enjoyed the Deer Park and the Breakfast, have to say we do offer a number of fish option on the menu and a large buffet selection offering yoghurt, berry compote nuts freshly baked Danish, alongside our cooked full English Breakfast. We also have a rolling programme of refurbishment, which over the years has continually improved our 3 star AA rating. Once again thank you for your review and we hope to see you again in the future. Kind regards Christopher Ashby

"good but leaving room for some niggles"

it's everything you will read about: pleasant building with an interesting history set within a splendid deer park and boasting nouvelle cuisine dining ...but our room (27) was rather pokey and stuffy (not helped by a broken bathroom fan); OK so we were on a 'voucher deal' so getting one of the less desirable rooms is not so surprising (although not done by every hotel), but then it turned out that although the voucher stated that "dinner is included" this meant only one course(!), and the "glass of wine each included" was in fact ignored because the cost of these was included in the bill and only removed on querying the unexpectedly large final amount, presented without any breakdown so it was not easy to see the error being made

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time in posting your review, following your stay with us here at Whitworth Hall. Of course I was sorry to read about the “niggles” pointed out in regards to the stay with us, and I apologise for the problems encountered. Little things such as incorrect billing should simply not happen. I do hope you choose to return at some time in the future. Kind Regards Christopher Ashby

Beautiful setting and lovely grounds. Hotel is lovely and most staff were really friendly and helpful. Room was nice, really comfy bed and good size. Room was a little dated and carpet was dirty. Bathroom was nice but shower was barely a trickle. Didn't think the standard justified the price to be honest. Breakfast was poor. Sausage was burnt, beans came in a ramekin and were dry. Still had a lovely time.

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Hello and thank you for your review. It was of course nice to read, that on the whole you had a lovely time with us here at Whitworth Hall hotel, however I would like to thank you for bring to my attention the issues raised in your review and I will speak to the team about them in order to continually improve both the property and service. Once again thank you for your review. Yours sincerely Christopher Ashby

"My Daughters Wedding"

18/06/2016

Must write to say thank you to David & all the staff at Whitworth Hall, Spennymoor for making my daughters wedding day very special. From the moment we arrived we were made very welcome & looked after until we left the following day. The Hotel is beautiful as are the rooms, attention to detail is excellent. The food is delicious from the Wedding canapés, breakfast right through to full English the following morning, thank you chef! I would highly recommend this Hotel for a family Wedding.

"Wonderful stay at Whitworth Hall"

16/06/2016

My husband and I stayed at Whitworth Hall for three nights. The hotel is a former historic home and has lots of character and lovely grounds. I particularly enjoyed feeding the deer (where else can you have so much fun for £1!), exploring the wildlife garden and old church, huge breakfasts, comfortable bed and considerate and affable staff. I gave an average score below for Cleanliness as there was a couple of things in our guest room which wasn't up to the very high standard of everywhere else.

"An unexpected gem !"

15/06/2016

My wife and I broke our journey here by stopping just the one night. It was intended as no more than a stopover but we were pleasantly surprised at the quality of the accommodation, the beautiful rural surroundings and the substantial cooked and served breakfast. The hotel is about 2 miles from the centre of the fairly drab town of Spennymoor, yet the hotel set in tranquil surroundings of a deer park and a magical yet large garden walk may well have been a hundred miles away - what a contrast. We only had a standard room but it was very well furnished - apart from a dated TV - comfortable and deadly quiet. The bar and lounge were also very pleasant. The breakfast was marvellous. You help yourself to cereals , fruit juice ,etc and then wait to be served a substantial breakfast, which consisted of virtually 2 of everything. I couldn't eat again until tea time ! We continued our journey a bit reluctantly it has to be said - but we will be returning. You too will not be disappointed.

"A morning out feeding the deer "

13/06/2016

My young girls and I love a visit here, feeding the deer and walking the gorgeous grounds of the hotel. Never actually stayed in the hotel. The hotel seems to be popular for christening and wedding receptions. Seen couple parties. Staff in reception always approachable

"Mid Week Break"

11/06/2016

We booked a 4 night mid week break at short notice and so glad we did! The hotel is lovely, staff friendly and food fantastic - plus each morning we woke to look out over the deer park. Perfect and restful! What more could we have asked for.

"Fantastic country hotel"

11/06/2016

This is a lovely country hotel set in a deer park with beautiful gardens. The rooms are a good size with comfy beds and a nice hot shower. Wifi is reasonable and free. Staff are very friendly and helpful. There are now two restauarants and the Library is a wonderful setting. The food is delicious and local, the venison pie is highly recommended. Breakfast is cooked to order and there are some nice selections including smoked salmon and scrambled egg,

This is a lovely hotel in the countryside with great grounds. The hotel is very quaint with lots of history to it. I loved reading about its past and previous owners (so I bought the book on its history). The room we were allocated was more than adequate for us, it's is a bit dated but that just give it lots of character. You get a double bed which was comfortable and plenty of tea coffee ect. The bathroom is smal but the bath is quite large, the shower was hot and powerful and there are a few toiletries to use. Obviously due to its age there is no air conditioning but there was a large fan to use and if you kept the window slighty open it didn't get to hot with the lovely sunny weather we had whilst there. Again there are no lifts to the rooms so like me who had mobility issues it is difficult walking up and Finn the stairs but this didn't spoil my stay. The Restuarant is really nice and airy with a nice ambiance. The food was top notch and served hot and remained so throught the meal, there is a good choice of wine which was very nice. The breakfast was also very good, it is served to you and it was excellent (actually there was so much food on the plate both mornings I couldn't eat it all). All the staff from the reception to the dining room where really excellent, they are really freindly and attentive. The receptionist had a great knowledge of not only the hotels history but also of the local area. The grounds of the hotel are beautiful and well maintained, it was fantastic to be able the feed the deer that are there. It also has a great lake were you can fish and a little church you can visit. For a three star hotel it is amazingly better than expected and a great stay for people of all age groups, throughly enjoyable two nights and this is one hotel I would certainly visit again.

"Afternoon tea in beautiful surroundings."

5
08/06/2016

Visited her here for afternoon tea on a lovely warm and sunny day. We took our tea in the conservatory tastefully decorated in floral splendour with traditional English crockery. The menu included a sparkling wine and unusually a taster butternut squash soup aperitif. Finger sandwiches in different breads and home scones with cream were also on offer along with delicate pastries. This was a very acceptable afternoon tea with the added finesse of the charming maître de serving it and wearing gloves making you feel you were dining at the Ritz in London. The country park surroundings with the deer and wooded areas are a must to visit with young and old and this hotel is a jewel not to be missed.

This was our second visit and still as good as ever ,We ate both nights in the library restaurant and we were well satisfied with the food and service ,the beds were comfortable and the hotel well decorated . I liked the new carpet in the bar and stairs The deer in the grounds were an added attraction

Also thank you for your endorsement of the new carpets too, just to let you know as well, we have just taken delivery of some new furniture for the bar as well. Once again many thanks for your review, and like always hope to see you return again in the near future, Kind regards Christopher Ashby

06/06/2016

My boyfriend treated me to a night away here for my birthday and we had a lovely stay. The surroundings of the hotel are beautiful and the deer are just a fantastic addition. Really unique. The only thing we could fault the stay on was decor of the room. The room was clean, and we had a lovely view of the lake and deer, but was very dated, and could really do with being renovated. We had a slight issue with the TV not working which was quickly rectified whilst we were eating Dinner in the restaurant, which also couldn't be faulted. Overall a wonderful night at a very reasonable price.

03/06/2016

We have just had 5 days 4 nights here, lovely staff, comfortable rooms, good food, homely feeling we were on a coach trip The Hotel is set in a beautiful deer park, sunny patio with chairs and tables. a lovely walk though a fairy lit garden. The wifi was erratic in the rooms

"Best hotel ever"

30/05/2016

We stayed here for 3 nights as a birthday treat. Everything about this hotel was perfect the wonderful friendly deer in the park, the beautiful lit up garden walk this was just the outside. Inside the hotel is beautifully decorated throughout, the lounge areas library and dining rooms are all very spacious. All staff were very polite and helpful. Only 30 rooms so nowhere was crowded. We didn't eat in the restaurant although the menu looked very nice apart from breakfast, this was a cooked to order plus a buffet of cereals and fruit. Rooms were spacious and clean with plenty of wardrobe space and drawers. All rooms seem to have wonderful views of either the gardens or the deer in the park. Would definitely stay here again and look forward to doing so

"Delightful Place"

27/05/2016

This was my first visit but certainly won't be my last. We came for afternoon tea on a voucher and it as excellent. You were served a small cup of soup which was exquisite and a small quiche. There followed the usual three tier plate with sandwiches, scones with jam and cream and then three dainty little cakes each. As much tea as you could drink was all served by a very pleasant waitress. I even finished with a lovely cup of coffee. We finished by walking in the grounds where deer wandered.

"What a gem"

26/05/2016

The hotel is a small but beautify formed hotel. A choice of two restaurants and a bar lounge menu gives lots of options. I ate in the Library room restaurant and being told they have a new menu from a new chef I though um but I had the scallops with a wonderful Indian influence the small dots of lime pickle were so intense see and the little onion bagee superb. Then on to main pork three says loin very nice belly very nice pulled pork bass deep fried astonding. One note I ordered the chest board and ofter such a great experience I hope for more. On a positive criticism I would say I reckon there are so many local cheeses that would be shown here and that is what they need. Really if all I have to complain about is the cheeseboard, no a great experience the Maitre de was superb some many believe they are so superior not this one and forgive me for not remembering your name but if you want to see how a real Maitre De shold work a room come and watch him. All the other restaurant staff very know, egeable and at tentative. Would I come back here well yes for the food but the hotel with it's deer park and surrounding the wow. I have gone kna bit but they deserve the praise. At least an AA rosette next time

All 26 of our members had a great weekend at a hotel set in beautiful surroundings with walks in the grounds and the chance to see and feed the deer if you wished. There are many different places of interest to visit while in the area,. Meals were of a very high standard and served by friendly and efficient staff in a separate dining room - would recommend the hotel to any-one - the rooms were all beautifully furnished and comfortable -

"Beautiful grounds"

19/05/2016

We booked a one night stay here in January, as a wee treat to allay the January blues. It is not too far from where we live and we have visited the deer park a few times for a wander and to use the conservatory lounge for a cappuccino and cake. The building is lovely and steeped in history (which you can read about in the info. folders in the rooms) and the grounds beautiful. We enjoyed a roam around with bags of deer feed (available at reception for £1) and had no shortage of deer nuzzling our hands for a snack. Our room was a deluxe double, replete with a four poster bed.. The room was a great size and quite grand. The toilet and sink were on one side of the room, in an en suite, and the bath on the other side in it's own room. It's clear that there has been some time and money spent on decorating the room in a fitting style. However, there was a panel near one of the en suite rooms that had clearly been placed upside down; lack of attention to detail. And the choice of artwork was mismatched. There were too many framed pictures of differing styles, and set in unfathomable places (or is it just me that insists on symmetry?). It felt like had been dressed with quantity in mind, not quality, and it left that place feeling a little cluttered. The TV was pretty unviewable due to it's position in relation to the four-poster. The room was also incredibly hot through the night, with it being hard to strike a happy balance with the heating. We took sparkling afternoon tea for two in the conservatory lounge which should have been simple enough but there was a huge mix up in the order. Dinner in there was a more straightforward affair but it was cold when sat eating, despite being seated by a radiator. Breakfast in the library restaurant was very good, with a buffet and a fresh cooked breakfast on offer. Whitworth Hall is a lovely place but for all it's historic and perceived grandeur, as a hotel it really doesn't rank any higher than any other hotel that is comparable in price.

"Grounds are great to take the kids and see the deer"

5
19/05/2016

We didn't stay at the hotel as we live locally but we did have lunch there after feeding the deer and walking in the grounds with my grandson. The food was good, although we only wanted a light lunch but the service seemed exceptionally slow - especially as there was no one else eating.

"Beautiful pot, fantastic service"

18/05/2016

The staff at this hotel could not be more helpful and polite. We asked for two room nearby to one another and this was accommodated. We were able to check into one of the rooms early as it was ready (11am). Breakfast was first class with waiting staff far more experienced than most of the hotels we have staying in recently. The deer in the park are a delight to watch and the grounds are extensive and very pleasant to wander around. We will defiantly return.

"Would recommend to anyone"

18/05/2016

Excellent hotel-by far the nicest Best Western I have stayed in so far . Four poster bedroom was fabulous, jacuzzi spa bath-the bed was so comfortable-could not fault anything. Location in the country park was lovely-seeing the deer and feeding them made it even more special. Can see why people choose this place as their wedding venue. Excellent service-staff could not do enough to help you-just cannot understand why it is only classed as 3*.

"Lovely hotel, lovely staff"

18/05/2016

34 of us from a Hertfordshire U3A stayed for 3 nights to visit Durham & Beamish. What a lovely hotel. Everyone said how spacious the rooms were - had everything you needed - bath/shower, tea & coffee making, trouser press, hair drier, TV. I believe there are only two floors to the hotel and no lift but there are plenty of ground floor rooms for those with mobility problems. As an independent party we were placed in a separate room for dining which was also lovely. We had a good choice for dinner (we were asked to make our selections at breakfast time which I think is a good idea). Dinner was served quickly and no one seemed to be kept waiting. Nor did I hear any complaints about the food and everyone said how friendly and helpful the hotel staff were. Also the grounds around the hotel were well worth a tour and had been immaculately kept. This is obviously a good choice for weddings and other large functions. Would certainly like the opportunity of staying here again if the occasion arises.

"Another great stay"

17/05/2016

The hotel is exceedingly clean throughout. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and I stay whenever in this area. It is really commendable. Missed the deer as their area was being spruced up! The grounds are lovely.

"Great hotel in beautiful surroundings"

17/05/2016

Had a 2 night stay, our room was clean and spacious, with a jacuzzi bath also had a mini fridge which contained bottles of water and a jug of milk, much better than the mini cartons you usually find in hotels. The room overlooked the deer park. The staff were very friendly and helpful, Breakfast was plentiful, lots of fresh fruit, cereals, good choice of cooked breakfasts, toast, kept us going most of the day. Ate in the brasserie on night again food was very good. Would definitely recommend and hope to return later in year.

Hi I have stayed here several times and it never disapoints. Location great and quiet. Rooms well maintained in classical style. Never had a bad meal. Bar is old style, only slight gripe more lagers than ales..but the ale is always well kept.

17/05/2016

I have mixed feeling about this hotel this time. it is our second visit to this hotel. the first time was amazing first class room, and a first class experience in every way. the grounds are amazing and one of the best hotels we have stayed in. unfortunately not this time. When I booked the room I explained I was in a wheel chair, so I would need a room that was accessible. when we arrived we had stairs to get to our room, we contacted reception who was very good, and exchanged our room, it was twin beds which was so far apart it was like being in another room, we asked if there was a double room was told we had to wait until the next day. we were moved to another which looked tired, and not very clean the bathroom tiles were broken which my husband caught his trowser on, all this was reported to the reception, who apologised . has the trip was for my birthday I felt it put a little damper on it.it was not what we expected from a hotel such as whit worth Hall.

"Great Hotel In Lovely Surroundings"

14/05/2016

Just stayed at the Whitworth Hall hotel, cleanliness, standard of decor and furnishing put it way above the 3 stars advertised. The Hall itself is enhanced by its location in the countryside and the nearby deer make the whole package a wonderful experience and well worth the money paid. The staff were all polite and professional which added to a very positive stay. My only negatives are I couldn't get onto the wifi never mind logging in, wifi is a must for all travellers, this was disappointing. The first rate breakfast was spoilt for me as an inferior tomato sauce was given, only a small point but standards are so high it was a surprise!

"Nice hotel"

4
11/05/2016

The grounds to this hotel are very impressive with deer grazing in the fields which is lovely it also has a large pond that had men fishing at we were greeted by the friendly staff at reception and found our room easily which was very nice unfortunatly the shower temperature would not go cool which we reported to reception it wasnt fixed when we returned after our day out round durham so we moved to another similar room which was fine The breakfast was made fresh & was very nice There was a party on the saturday night which we thought may disturb our sleep but we heard nothing would return again

"Anniversary celebration "

08/05/2016

We got married here 10 years ago. We stayed overnight and had a meal for our anniversary. The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to make our anniversary special. We got a free glass of champagne with our meal and the manager came to congratulate us. The chef even decorated our dessert plates and wrote in chocolate 'happy anniversary.' We will be coming back more often and bringing our daughter next time to feed the deer.

Well worth checking out Whitworth Hall if you are visting Durham City or any of the attractions in the wider area such as Beamish Museum. Not far from the A1, but tucked way in lovely countryside....and with its own herd of deer who are very friendly. Would be a lovely place for a wedding reception.

28/04/2016

This is a review of the food service - not the hotel which is set in lovely grounds and which may well be a great place to stay. We decided to return after a year and a simply awful meal the first time. This time we found the "Brasserie" which is next door to the Library restaurant. I remain bemused by the generally positive comments of the ambience, food and service. The Brasserie is actually a conservatory with little atmosphere and plenty of drafts from the poorly fitted windows. There were two other couples in there when we arrived and the restaurant next door seemed to have only about half a dozen diners. To say there was no atmosphere would be kind. Considering that there were only about 12 customers the service was slow and inattentive. The staff comprised a head waiter and three young waiting staff who were poorly managed and all did each others jobs. We ordered drinks promptly but caused confusion when we said we wanted some time before ordering our meal. "Well what time do you want to order it then?". I ordered burger and chips. I am unsure what the burger was made from but in texture it resembled minced rubber and had little flavour. The venison pie had a better flavour but the portion was tiny with a large puff pastry top taking up most of the pot. Such a shame as this looks like a nice hotel and is in a good location. With a new chef and head waiter the restaurant, brasserie and bar could be busy and full of atmosphere. I do hope the management read these reviews - and not just the 5 star ones. I also wish that Tripadvisor hotel reviews could separate the hotel and restaurants.

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Thank you for all your comments posted here on trip advisor following your meal in the Brasserie, of course I was sorry to read how, you did not once again enjoy your experience and I apologise for this, for both the service and food, a point of which we receive many great and fantastic reviews on, as you will read here and as noted by your good self. Once again thank you for taking the time in posting your comments and as said before we do us them in a constructive way in moving the property forward, in finishing I would just like to say we do have a separate page for reviews on the restaurants here on Trip Advisor, where you posted your last review following your visit to us. This is our second visit to to this fantastic location and it was every bit as good as our visit a year ago in March 2015, this time we except the garden "The Dene" is open and a nice walk around there after dinner was good, well done ground staff, we stayed 3 nights and used the hotels restaurant each night the food was well prepared and tasted good. Well done all the team. The rooms were as usual clean comfortable and warm and well serviced, it was a good base to tour Durham

"Great location, great staff and great food - what more do you need?"

18/04/2016

Can't begin to thank Christopher and his excellent staff enough for what turned out to be a very memorable break. The food was outstanding. We ate in the Brasserie the first night - informal dining with good pub type food in a beautiful conservatory. The second night we were in the Library restaurant. My husband has eaten at some of the finest restaurants in the land, and said the Library was equal to the best of them - and such amazing value! I stay at many hotels on business, and I loved every minute of our stay. The deer park, lake and grounds and are just so beautiful and tranquil. You can only hear birds singing... The staff are so lovely and warm, We stayed in room 23 with a dual aspect, right at the end of the corridor. Dont forget to look up the stairs when in the bar, as the ceiling will amaze you. A nice, small, intimate hotel (only 29 rooms I believe). The bathroom probably needed an update, but judging from the clear and continuous improvements being made by the management this will be in hand in the near future. One small point, if you are looking for a peaceful break, I would recommend checking with the hotel before you book to ensure there is not a wedding taking place during your stay as this could disrupt the peaceful nature of the hotel. All in all a lovely place - we will return!

"Wish we'd found the Brasserie"

17/04/2016

When we were looking for somewhere to stay overnight near Spennymoor, Whitworth Hall was the clear choice with great reviews here and elsewhere. The location of the hotel is lovely and the friendly welcome from Amber when we arrived set the tone. We had a dinner, bed and breakfast rate, so booked a table for later and followed her clear directions to our room, #3, which was fine - a little dated, but clean and comfortable with a good view of the surrounding parkland on two sides. We went down for a drink in the bar and were surprised by the rather elaborate menu, but made our choices and were shown to our table in the restaurant. There were just a couple of other diners there that evening, which was surprising since there had been several people in the bar earlier - perhaps we had missed an alternative option? Never mind - in no time at all, amuse-bouches were being brought. Sadly, though the ambitious menu and the attentive, white-gloved service suggested fine dining, the food itself was a disappointment. The fish and pork belly were overcooked and dry and we found ourselves wishing there had been a simpler option (how come we didn't know about the Brasserie?) As a result, the memory of Whitworth Hall which we took away was of a mediocre, over-ambitious meal rather than of a perfectly good, three star hotel in a lovely parkland setting.

"Hotel in a peaceful and tranquil location with great food"

09/04/2016

Back in February we decided that it would make sense to stay in County Durham, an area that over the years we had visited en route when vacationing in Northumbria. We eventually decided on the Whitworth Hall Hotel which looked to be in the right location, and offering the facilities we were looking for. Our telephone enquiry and reservation for the Easter weekend in March were dealt with efficiently and we accepted and paid in advance £456.20 for two persons for three nights on a Dinner, Bed and Breakfast Advanced Purchase basis. We checked in late in the afternoon and decided to dine in the evening in the attractive Library restaurant. Because we had paid in advance we enquired what the menu arrangements were. The answers were slightly confusing because it would seem that the restaurant offers meal deals through Living Social. But when we explained that we had booked directly we were pleased when we were told that we could order any choice of food from both menus. The food was prepared and presented to a very high standard by courteous and friendly staff. But we had an unpleasant surprise when presented by a bill exceeding £92! More confusion. It would seem that we had not been told that our booking included Dinner only to a certain value per person. I always take the view that a judgement of service and standards is best made on how problems are solved. In this case the manager on duty made immediate apologies for the bill (we had refused to sign the bill), realising that their booking confirmation deals did not mention any conditions regarding meals, and that they would amend their future confirmation procedures. During our meals staff were happy to engage in conversation, and we were surprised to learn that many had only recently commenced at the hotel. However we were very impressed by their helpfulness and friendliness. For our second evening there was a change of manager, but he had been fully briefed by his colleague about the previous evening's confusion. He immediately made himself know to us to again apologise. It seemed to us that the hotel, and restaurant, are making a clear and determined effort to make themselves a premier destination. If our experience is anything to go by I suspect that they will succeed. Excellent staff (including the ever efficient and friendly Amber on reception), great chefs, and an idyllic location, makes a devastating combination. Thank you Whitworth Hall. A pity about the billing, oterwise the rating would have been a five

Superb country hotel with a deer park in the heart of County Durham. A great base for sightseeing in the Durham Dales, visting students at Durham University or seeing the new epic outdoor show 'Kynren' (elevenarches.org) in Bishop Auckland in 2016.

A very quiet peaceful comfortable hotel in pretty grounds, with it's own deer park and small church. Lovely food. Suitable for couples and those wanting a quiet location . Attentive and helpful staff.

Delightful environment and location. Perfect for breaking my journey North & South. Pleasant efficient staff, and lovely food all complemented a relaxing break. Room was bright and airy, with all the accepted standards of a good hotel. Certainly looking for a reason to stay again in the future.

03/04/2016

I had seen the hotel pictures and chose it for its location while we visited family in Durham, we were not disappointed, deer roaming free in the park that you could feed, very nice. We stayed for 3 nights over the new year, we had a room with a four poster bed which was lovely, the food in the restaurant was excellent too, I would recommend this hotel without hesitation as a destination in the north east.

"Thoroughly Enjoyable Stay"

A thoroughly enjoyable stay. Great room, impressive historic building, beautiful setting, excellent service, top rate breakfast, plenty of parking, helpful staff. Their deer park was closed for grass reseeding but could still watch the herd of deer grazing and crossing the adjacent pasture. Will definitely be back.

Set in the countryside with a deer park opposite the front of the hotel it is the perfect place to relax. The staff are friendly and welcoming and very helpful and the food that we ate from the Celeriac Soup to the Gnocchi was excellent. Our room included an enormous bed which was incredibly comfortable. We stayed on a DBB deal with Living Social and the overall value was excellent

We didn't know this part of the world so we were concerned as to what the area and the hotel would be like. We shouldn't have been worried at all - it exceeded our expectations. The staff were very attentive and friendly, the food was delicious, the rooms were very clean, and the bed was the most comfortable hotel bed that I've ever slept in - all in the most wonderful, quiet setting. I now hope my daughter gets into Newcastle Uni so that we can come back......

Fantastic hotel, friendly staff and top quality food. This place is a superb hotel great rooms and amazing restaurants. Deer in the grounds. You must put this on your list to stay when in the North East, I stayed here for two nights whilst I was working in the North East and found it the perfect base to get to where I needed to be, close to A1 and other main link roads

"It's a "Bobby-Dazzler""

02/03/2016

The ancestral home of Bobby Shafto exudes charm a plenty, set in acres of deer park the setting is glorious. We've stayed here several times, this time we had room 4 (the largest) and it certainly met with expectations. The bed, as all the beds we've slept in here was very comfortable indeed, it was clean and tastefully decorated. The downside was just that the bath tape were constantly dripping. However as always it's the warmth and friendliness of the staff that deserves particular mention, without them it would just be a well kept museum. the breakfast was as always excellent.

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for such a fantastic review, and for once again returning to Whitworth Hall Hotel, I must agree with you, it is a great property and it is the hard working staff who make it special. Room four, one of our deluxe rooms is lovely, with both space and views across the deer park, and I can say that the dripping tap has now been repaired. Once again thank you for your review, and we do hope to see you again soon. Christopher & all the team.

Took advantage of a relaxing stay here through isiton. This is set in lovely grounds and even got up close to several deer. Perfect short break and will be returning at some point.

"A very pleasant place to stay"

21/02/2016

Only stayed for one night but would happily stay again. The location is set in amongst lots of very tame deer which you can fed if you wish. All the staff were very attentive, in particular the duty manager, Prem Lal ( I think that was his name) who had a wonderful nature. Room was generally very nice, good sized bath, although the pillows weren't brilliant. Evening dinner in the conservatory area was very good with excellent fillet steak and salmon. Happily stay again next time we're in the area

16/02/2016

This was my first visit, we were with family who has stayed previous, always having a good experience. Check in was smooth, the lady on reception was a little robotic, queries were addressed with a very monotone response, however arriving at the room i was surprised at the size and the bed pushed into the corner of the room, against the external wall, room wasn't as clean as you'd see in a modern hotel, but this is an old building and a beautiful one, so these are issues i wasn't too concerned by.. other rooms are much bigger so perhaps a reduced rate for the smaller room, especially when your view is the rubbish bins.. We decided to have afternoon tea, which was nice, service was slow, however staff were attentive when they got to you. We had a nice walk around the area and feed the deer, id recommend walking out and about as its views are stunning. On the evening we ate in the Library Restaurant, service was fantastic here, and food was excellent. The only thing that could add to the atmosphere of the very silent dining room would be music at an audible level, we had to whisper to each other to not be the entertainment as it appeared no other table were having any interaction and almost holding out for some entertainment... Then after the meal, the bar area isn't very welcoming sadly, again silent and a little chilly. The hotel has beautiful surroundings and is a wonderful building, however not really a 'fun' place to be. Room was ok to sleep in, however you are woken as soon as someone uses any of the water in next door rooms as old building old pipes, therefore creaking is heard, then noise of the corridor is heard clearly as mentioned earlier bed is against wall and next to the door. Breakfast was ok, pretty standard, they look after dietary requirements which is great, however its not at the same standard the evening meal was. Staff are friendly and helpful in restaurants, i may return, i would request a different room.

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for you're very in depth review posted here on trip advisor following your stay with us, on the recommendation of family. It was great to read how much you enjoyed your dinner in the restaurant and the stunning views whilst walking around the estate, however I have taken on board all your comments, and will use them in a constructive way. "One of the BEST of Best Western hotels"

16/02/2016

Stopped in September 2015 and had booked the four poster suite on a DBB rate. The hotel is set in beautiful grounds where you can feed the deer. Walk around the grounds and even visit the church. The staff were excellent except for a miserable waitress at breakfast. Food was superb and the room was magnificent. Would I recommend it YES and will I be going back? Definitely

"5 Star Valentine's Stay"

16/02/2016

My girlfriend and I spent the night on Saturday 13th February 2016. The hotel itself is beautiful, set in picturesque surroundings with a stunning fallow deer park. Parking was ample and check-in was smooth. The receptionist was very helpful, friendly and greeted us with a smile. The room was extremely comfortable and very well furnished. A peaceful night's sleep was had by the both of us. The highlight of the night had to be the evening meal in the Library restaurant which was of a very high standard. We were welcomed with 2 glasses of complimentary champagne and a red rose for my partner which I thought was a very nice touch! The food was outstanding, and we particularly enjoyed the company of the restaurant manager who made us feel very much at ease. Breakfast again was superb, we both opted for the full cooked English which went down a treat. The bacon and eggs were cooked to perfection! After check-out we spent the rest of the morning feeding the deer. As my partner is a big animal lover this gave her a big thrill, a completely unique experience which sets Whitworth Hall apart from other hotels in the region. Food for the deer is available at £1 a bag from reception. I would definitely recommend the hotel to anyone looking to get away for a nice break in luxurious surroundings. Some great memories will be taken away from the weekend and we hope to return soon!

It was fantastic to read how much you enjoyed all of your short stay with us over the Valentines weekend and thank you for choosing Whitworth Hall on this special occasion. The team were delighted with all the comments, and it does mean a lot to them to get all feedback, the Deer too, I should think were both pleased with their mention and of course the food. Once again many thanks for all your kind words and we do hope to see you both back in the near future. Yours sincerely Christopher Ashby and all the Team.

"afternoon tea"

2
15/02/2016

My 2 sisters and I took my mother for afternoon tea as part of her 90th birthday celebrations. We chose Whitworth Hall as it is a quality venue but the afternoon tea we were served was anything but. It was the cheapest, put together spread I have ever seen and wouldn't have served it to anyone. We couldn't even decide what the filling was in one of the finger sandwiches, we decided it was egg paste! and the ham was just grissle. No fancy cakes as you would expect on an afternoon tea just slices of cake cut from a cheap bar of cake, a mediocre scone and a moussey thing served in a shot glass that you couldn't get your spoon into to eat the fruit compote at the bottom! The whole thing was cheap and nasty. I would have complained but it was my mother's special occasion so didn't want to make a fuss. Such a shame because we enjoyed walking around the beautiful grounds and the service was good but we won't be returning for afternoon tea.

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Hello Thank you for your review posted here on trip advisor following the birthday treat, it goes without saying I was sorry to read how it would seem on this occasion we have seemed to have not lived up to your expectations in regards to the afternoon tea served. I am also sorry I did not have the opportunity in speaking to you on the day it's self but fully understand the reason why, I therefore ask if you would like to discuss the issues in full with myself now, I would love to talk to you. Once again thank you for your review, we do use all the comments in a constructive way. Yours sincerely Christopher Ashby

"Valentine weekend"

14/02/2016

Spent the night here for Valentine, Can not fault the hotel, rooms clean, hotel grounds were lovely, food was lovely, but I have to say that apart from one member of staff being pleasant, all other members were very misserable, don't think any of them smiled. Which is the reason I would not stay here again The breakfast was lovely but waited 45 mins to get our order taken, and that was only because I asked. A couple before us left without food as they waited that long Such a shame as could be an outstanding hotel if they could train there staff to be pleasant

WHGeneralManager, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Hello and thank you for taking the time to write your review here on trip advisor. Thank you for all your comments, I have taken them all on board and passed them on to the team here at Whitworth Hall, we do use them in a constructive way to move the Hotel and service forward continually. I apologise in the time it took for your breakfast, things such as this should not happen. Once again many thanks for all your comments and thank you for choosing Whitworth Hall over Valentines Yours sincerely Christopher Ashby

"Valentine Treat"

14/02/2016

Booked through booking.com however on arrival the young man on reception told us he did not have our reservation . He didn't seem bothered and made no effort to to resolve the issue . We gave him our booking .com reference but he said 'that meant nothing' ! I phoned booking .com and the very helpful gentleman there assured us that we did have a reservation and said he would ring the hotel immediately and asked me to stay on the line . Eventually the matter was resolved but the young man on reception really needs some 'tips' on customer service . Putting that matter aside we enjoyed our stay . The room was clean and comfortable . The 'Valentine' meal in the library was lovely and the staff in the restaurant did a fabulous job . Breakfast was very nice but we had quite a wait to be served . It was extremely busy and more staff were needed. All in all we had a lovely evening .

"A Little gem in Spennymore"

09/02/2016

We stopped off at Whitworth Hall last Sunday Feb 7th., It's cracking hotel in a great setting. The room was spotless, a good size and well furnished. We were made very welcome. The deal I got was excellent £134.00 D,B&B [this included a generous £32.00 allowance each towards dinner] which I suppose must be their "off season" rate !... The food was superb and the wine list comprehensive and not expensive ! [the house red at £14.95]. I'd like to go back there in the summer to enjoy fully the gardens and grounds, It will cost a little more then perhaps but will Im sure be worth it.

"Excellent hotel with character. One of the better Best Western hotels!"

5
09/02/2016

This was our second stay at Whitworth Hall. The grounds of the hotel are surronded by hundreds of deer in beautiful countryside. The hotel is not your typically modern hotel but it has a class and style of its own befitting it's country surroundings. The hotel has bags of character and is very comfortable. It has clearly had some updating since our last visit but even then, it was a really pleasant hotel to stay in. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The meals in the restaurant are of excellent quality, however probably best to ask to see the Brasserie menu as well as the a la carte menu as it gives more choice, and better value if dining on a budget.

"A hidden gem"

5
08/02/2016

Booked via Travelzoo for five of us, bed, breakfast and dinner and had a very enjoyable stay. The bedrooms and bathrooms in all three rooms were big and spotlessly clean, with pleasant decor and lovely and warm. The food was excellent with a good choice on the menu, and the staff were very welcoming and efficient, and breakfast was cooked to order. The park looked lovely and couldn't believe how many deer there were, understandably with all the rain access was restricted to the paths around the deer park as it was very boggy. There is a small children's play area and attractive lake in the grounds and ample free car parking. At £99 per room the price was very good value and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

"perfect hotel all facilities and staff top notch"

Perfect wedding anniversary. bought for my son and his wife. They were upgraded to a top room. The meals were top notch and all of the staff were very very very good. I cannot thank the staff enough fro making it a special treat.

"Relaxing break"

04/02/2016

All staff at Whitworth Hall did everything possible to ensure we enjoyed our stay, a warm friendly welcome, smiles and greetings from everyone and a bottle of Prosecco in our room. I understand that the hotel is in the process of being updated however our bedroom was spacious and warm with a lovely view and had an enormous comfy bed. We enjoyed an afternoon tea on arrival, had a wander around the deer park then headed back to enjoy our prosecco before drinks in the bar then a delicious dinner in The Library Restaurant. As a coeliac requiring a gluten free diet I must commend the chef, I had mentioned being coeliac when booking and this was remembered through each meal. A lovely relaxing stay. Thank you

"Very Satisfying"

5
31/01/2016

This was a booking in a private room for family to celebrate a senior members birthday and several rooms were required for overnight stays. We found the staff helpful and polite from the outset and there was a sense of professionalism and genuine interest across the board. There was no sign of the artificial smile which so often manifests itself in staff, all were lively, keen, and genuinely friendly and helpful. 18 people including 5 children gathered for the meal. Meet and greet drinks were dispensed without delay and the bar was well covered, missing the usual 'abandoned periods' which many hotel bars suffer from. The food was pre ordered and easily covered almost every item on the menu but a high standard was maintained and service was efficient and quick. We stuck to the brasserie menu for ease of choice but no-one had anything but praise for the standard of the food. Those staying over were quite pleased with the rooms and found them clean and well appointed. The building is very old and retains much of the original character. This means there might be the odd draught and sticking window catch but this, in my opinion adds to the experience. Our stay in the Shaftoe Room, with its quaint four poster bed was very pleasant. The bed was extremely comfortable. Breakfast was very good. Again staff were very ably attending to guests needs and there was absolutely nothing to complain about. The full English was very tasty, hot, and freshly cooked. Other variants were equally tasty and all of the group were well satisfied with a hearty start to their day, well fed for their journeys home. The hotel is situated within a country park and a large herd of Fallow Dear are resident there. This is an attraction for guests and locals who come to see these wonderful animals and feed them. Food is available at reception for a small fee but a bag of carrots does not go amiss for the almost tame animals who are always up for a feed. Our whole experience at Whitworth Hall was thoroughly enjoyed and the staff were a big part of this, each end every one of them deserving a thank you for their friendly, efficient demeanour. Rarely have I seen a hotel which scores so many positives. They have a pride in their hotel and their work and the customer benefits greatly from this. We will certainly use this wonderful location again.

"Birthday treat - just had to stay over!"

5
30/01/2016

For a birthday treat, I booked a room for the night as we already had a booking for dinner in The Library. At £81 via booking.com it was marginally more than taxis to/from home - but included breakfast! We stayed in room 26 on the ground floor overlooking the back of the hotel. It was comfortable, clean and tidy. Check-in was easy, drinks in the bar are not badly priced and breakfast the following morning was superb. I hear the hotel have plans for improvements, maybe increase from 3 to 4 stars, no doubt this will result in rooms being refurbished but I was happy with the current standard.

"Xmas gift"

5
28/01/2016

We got married at this hotel in 2009, so we were excited to receive an overnight stay with dinner bed and breakfast as a Xmas gift. Upgraded to an executive room (only £10) which guarantees a view over the deer park. Lovely big room with a very comfortable bed. Managed to get an early check in, staff were all very pleasant, a credit to the hotel. 3 course evening meal was delicious as was breakfast the following morning. Couldn't fault our stay and hope to visit again soon.

"great hotel"

what a great hotel in a picturesque setting set in beautiful parkland. great service from the staff and high quality rooms, however my only gripe is I'm a little disappointed with new menu since our last stay.

"1 night stay"

23/01/2016

Check in nice and easy.. had to walk past bar to get to and from bed room which I didn't like.. Room was a decent size on ground floor.. A couple of faults with room.. 1st.. Big heavy curtains which when closed cover the radiator. so you lift the onto the window cill which spoils the look of room... 2nd.. Room not as clean as it first looked...Dust on plenty of surfaces..table clean but on pictures ect its been a while since they were dusted down.. Overall I would stay here again..

"Visit Family"

12/01/2016

Overnight stay on a quick visit to see relatives, hotel setting is fab, deer roaming in fields adjacent to car park.It was quite late when we arrived, however staff were very helpful, Restaurant was still open although we settled for Bar meals which are available until 10-00pm. Room was very cosy although a little to hot..10 mins with window open sorted that. Excellent breakfast served the next morning in the Library Restaurant.

"EXCELLENT STAY"

5
11/01/2016

Stayed beginning of January for my partners birthday - booked dbb and was well chuffed with our four poster bed and large jacuzzi bath. The food and service were great and the deer park is beautiful - just a shame we couldn't take a walk around due to the weather. Would highly recommend for a quiet classy stay and will be back when the weather improves and we can explore the park

"A Blissfull Retreat"

08/01/2016

The reason I chose this beautiful country hotel was first of all for the setting. For me the fact that it is set in a picturesque deer park made this a dream come true. I requested an upgrade to a room overlooking the park and the receptionist granted my wish immediately. When we arrived the receptionist informed me that I had a fabulous room and I was not disappointed. It was well worth the upgrade and I would definitely recommend this to future guests. The room itself was absolute luxury and immaculate. It was lovely and warm too. The meals were delicious. The service was faultless. All the hotel staff were so friendly, polite and professional. What more can I say except that I can't wait to return to celebrate this New Years Eve ! Oh and I even fed the Deer on New Years Day and took some wonderful photos.

"Perfect venue for a perfect wedding day"

We had our wedding reception in the Duncombe suit August bank holiday weekend. My husband and I and all our guests had a fantastic day. David and all the staff were friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, rooms and service was perfect. Could not recommend enough! Thank you.

"STUNNING"

05/01/2016

We were visiting some friends for a long weekend and booked in here for 3 nights. What a beautiful setting this hotel is situated in. The staff are most welcoming and very friendly, nothing is too much trouble. We were shown to our room which was very clean, spacious and cosy. The restaurant food was excellent as was the selection for breakfast. So glad we went just after Christmas as we were lucky enough to see the massive beautifully decorated tree in the bar area by the stairs. Thank you all for making our stay a first class one, will definitely be coming to stay with you when visiting our friends in future.

"Lovely quiet location"

5
05/01/2016

This was a lovely location and stunning hotel where all the staff were friendly and helpful. I would immediately recommend this as a get away location for romantic couples or those who wish to enjoy a peaceful break. The food is excellent in the ala carte restaurant and reasonably priced with a varied selection. The surrounding area and parkland lends itself to aiding the tranquillity of the hotel. I would certainly consider this location as a venue for any future Wedding plans my Girlfriend and I may have. Thank you everyone at the hotel.

03/01/2016

Arrived here and was welcomed most wonderful and felt at ease though you have to walk through the bar lounge to get to your room which I felt a bit unsure about.Room on first impression very nice and clean then the things appear to make you think. Remote for tv not working so went to reception to ask if they had replacement batteries to which I was told they will see and let me know ,That was at 4pm.Awaited all night and nothing so that meant no remote had to keep getting up so in end turned TV off. It would have been a tad polite to let us know if they could have replaced them or not but nothing. The deal included a meal for two and all I can give 100% credit to the staff in the restaurant .Stars they were so that was a good experience ,Returned back to room to find out the radio on the clock was not working even though had been tested only a few months previous so no tv with remote and no radio. Whilst I was checking the cable. it was full of dust and hairs so as you do I checked the headboard and pictures .Full of dust .Pity anyone with breathing problems .Sorry but the room needs to be fully dusted and vacuumed behind the cabinets. Breakfast time and yet again great service from the waiting on staff .It is pleasant place to stay but its the little things that make the big difference. Felt ignored re batteries even though 2 of the staff had been informed but hey ho its not worth informing the guest whose paying that unfortunately nothing can be done (maybe because we were there for 1 night) .That incident has made an impression as well as the dust .All in all it is a nice place to stay and the waiting on staff are excellent and cheery but check ya remote and the dust

I have just returned from a wonderful two night stay at Whitworth Hall. The hotel is set is beautiful grounds and the deer park has a lot of deer which are absolutely sweet. I was particularly impressed by the standard and fittings of the room and the bathroom. They had thought of absolutely everything from the rubber mat for the bottom of the bath through the radio alarm clock up to the swivel bracket on the TV and the ample room lighting and cosy and high quality furnishings. Also I would like to mention the excellent quality of the bedlinen, matress and pillows, the latter with hygienic padded inner linings. No expense has been spared here, and the housekeeping was excellent. The wifi in the room was instant and free. The public areas are extremely well kept and clean with interesting period features, and the library restaurant, in the oldest part of the house, is a magnificent room. The steak was excellent, highly recommended. The staff were welcoming and helpful in every way (special thanks to manager Steve - the handsome one with the beard!) I was more than happy with my stay and will be returning!

Stayed here during a recent business trip, what a really lovely place to stay - great surprise with the deer park within the grounds and able to walk round and see them at close quarters. The rooms are really comfortable and there is a good choice of food within the three restaurants ranging ala carte to bar food, good choice of breakfast but can be a bit pricy. All in all though a really nice place to stay if your in the area or if looking for a nice weekend break away

"Lovely weekend !"

The Whitworth Hall Country Park Hotel, Durham is one of the best hotels that I have had the pleasure to stay. Not only are the grounds exceptional with a large herd of resident deer, but the hotel has the old charm that you would expect from a country house setting. The staff also make you very welcome so that it feels more like staying with friends than being away on business.

Another great short break at this lovely Hotel.Set in a large Deer park this is an excellent place to get away from it all & experience some lovely peace & quiet!. Lovely room & the Christmas decorations & decor of the hotel are fabulous.!The history surrounding the hotel of course is set around Bobby Shafto who actually was real! & indeed lived & owned the place for a while & his tomb is in the lovely church adjacent to the Hall.

Tucked away down a quiet country lane Whitworth Hall is a lovely hotel. Staff friendly and v efficient. Food excellent. Fantastic period building set in beautiful grounds. Rooms small but v comfortable. If you need a hotel in this neck of the woods you can't go wrong with Whitworth Hall, part of the Best Western chain

Lovely hotel with so much potential and nice staff but just not right. We booked evening meal in library but looked at menu in room and preferred brasserie so asked to swap which was sorted by reception . But brasserie was cold and drafty as conservatory type room and windy, cold night. No atmosphere at all just 2 couples and then a group of 6 as we finished- few more in restaurant but not packed- yet we had been told 'it was busy as Xmas event in deer park on' not sure where all were? Food was ok- I had the fishcake starter for my main- bland and colourless - not on a par with my homemade ones nor Aldi's where you can see fish! Partners steak was nice though. Service pleasant but slow. Room was nice but cold despite radiator on- think needs bleeding? ? After dinner went to bar and waited quite a while for drinks as no staff on bar- another couple were saying goes the same too. A month before Xmas most places like this would have Xmas parties on? Rooms were set up for something - maybe for Sunday but all light on for several hours and no one in- turn them off and save money! !. Has huge potential but lacking in atmosphere. Maybe only open one restaurant and change menu so suits all - a large carte was pricey and brasserie similar to pub menu- take a few from each may be a suggestion? Would stay again but needs more atmosphere

This is a very good hotel, high specification, excellent service and great quality food. Located in a stunning country park surrounded by deer. I will be back, my only negative would be that my bed was too soft, but that personal preference

We enjoyed 2 nights at the hotel and enjoyed meals in the restaurant on both nights. The hotel and gardens are both of a high standard and the staff are friendly & helpful. We would be happy to stay again.

We have stayed at this hotel a few times now and love going back knowing we will have a relaxing time. We are two adults and one ten year old girl. We stayed in a family room, number 30, which is spacious, clean and comfortable. The reception staff are friendly and welcoming as are all the staff who work in the bar and restaurant. We had some drinks in the lounge bar which was lovely and also an evening meal in the main restaurant which was superb. You can buy deer food from the reception and feed the deer in the park which is great for kids and adults alike. There is also a nice little walk around the grounds and a quaint church nearby to look round. We will be back again soon.

We stayed with friends just for one night visiting Durham Lumiere, which was excellent. A nice clean hotel, with pleasant staff Had a pleaseant lunch, and a good breakfast. We would definitely stay here again if we were to be in the area.

"Lovely but poor breakfast service"

15/11/2015

We have stayed here many times and always had good service and a lovely time. This visit however, we had very poor service at breakfast on both days. Two members of staff were looking after both restaurants. We had to ask for someone to take our order, then we received cold toast. The hotel was full due to the Lumiere, but the management should make extra staff available. Apart from this, a gorgeous room, lovely location and delicious food in the restaurant, where we had excellent service at dinner.

13/11/2015

After many visits here I was lucky enough to get room 1. A great room with a four poster bed and nice and quite as its at the end of the hotel upstairs. The staff are always pleasant and helpful. I just love the cooked breakfast, very traditional in the sense of its all cooked for you and not the help yourself that most hotels have moved to. There is a great evening meal selection with various special nights from curry night to Steak night. The wine selection is good and I would think everyone could easily choose a meal they liked. I will be back fairly soon and look forward to the stay.

The hotel is located is a lovely spot, with the herd of deer on the doorstep a bonus. From arrival to departure the staff could't have been more friendly/helpful. Apart from Breakfast I ate in the Brasserie and the choice and quality of food was very good and reasonably priced. Breakfast was freshly cooked to order and the ingredients appeared to be locally sourced, not out of a bag from Walls, so a big plus for that. Happy to recommend Whitworth Hall

PRogersGM, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
It seems that our secret is out Nigel J! All of our ingredients are indeed locally sourced and we take great pride in supporting local producers. I shall pass all of your compliments to the team here and we shall keep a couple of sausages for you pending your return!

"Wonderful Setting"

02/11/2015

A wonderful setting, a country house hotel within a deer park. (be warned, a little noisy due to the rutting season) The hotel staff are welcoming & attentive, the food is good (a little pricey) and I can recommend the venison (just close the shutters first) I found the deserts rather disappointing - I felt rather let down (it was as if they had run out of what was ordered and tried to fake it) the room (21) was quiet and pleasantly appointed. Overall - 8 out of 10

PRogersGM, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Thanks for taking the time to write this review. The team will be pleased with your experience. If you could give me a little more information regarding the dessert I'd be more than happy to discuss with our talented kitchen brigade our shortcomings on the dessert side. My contact number is 01388 811772. We look forward to hearing from you.

The hotel is set in a huge park with deer roaming within 10 meters of the front door. The communal rooms , corridors etc are just beautiful and our first floor room was large, pretty and very comfortable. Breakfast was cooked to perfection and the staff was lovely. The place feels very welcoming and luxurious but unpretentious. We did not try the restaurant but the food in the bistro was very good indeed - and inexpensive. Will certainly be back.

PRogersGM, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Whitworth Hall Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the wonderful comments. We are lucky to have such a feature here at Whitworth Hall, especially at this time of year. We look forward to welcoming you again soon.

Every aspect of the hotel was superb. The beds and pillows were incredibilly comfortable and the food in the restaurant and bar was tasty and good value. The chef's pie and gammon were simply to die for! Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Feeding the deer was a highlight of our Whitworth Hall experience.

The hotel is in a lovely location, the deer park is an added element. The room was satisfactory with a comfortable bed. A good choice of breakfast items, with plenty to choose from. The food at dinner in the restaurant was excellent.

"Good stay but can be LOUD"

We stayed here recently for a family wedding, as a Diamond member normally an early checkin isn't a problem, on this case it seemed to be. In fairness the room was then sorted for us to checkin but this took c.45mins, they seemed a little taken aback when questioned over the 'perk' of early checkin. Z bed was placed in the room instead of a cot, asked 3 times for this to be changed and I am still waiting. Luckily a cot was placed in the mother-in-laws room (in addition) so we avoided risking our 1yr old rolling off a bed through the night. Facilites are good, location is very nice and the deer are a nice touch... my only real issue is the sheer volume from functions that go on late into the night, how guests staying through the week for business can abide this I genuinely don't know as I found it a bit much and was a guest at the function. Brekafast was nice but could have been better staffed (only one staff member completely run off her feet)

"Country Hotel with extensive estate"

Lovely old house in extensive estate with its own deer park. Great to pull curtains back in the morning and find a large herd of deer peacefully grazing! This place has history and character. The staff and food were pretty good too.

Just what you need at the day's end when having worked long hours. The staff were attentive - perhaps a little too much in the restaurant but that is certainly better than other places where one is invisible. The food was well received by all our party. Beds crisp and rooms clean

"Lovely Location"

13/10/2015

We stayed for 3 nights and would certainly recommend. The hotel is in a very quiet location and stands in grounds with a large deer herd. Our room was very large, our bed comfortable, the coffee etc. were well stocked, towels fluffy and we could control our own heating. Breakfast was good and the cooked items were prepared when ordered. We ate in the Brasserie and had a lovely meal.

The wedding was in the church, as short walk from the hotel, it was lovely as was the vicar. The wedding reception was great, not so keen on the shape of the function room, but was still a fantastic day/night.

I found this hotel by accident. I have used this hotel 3 times since. The rooms are large and very comfortable. Food is great and reasonable (around £20 for 2 courses and a pint) WIFI can be sketchy but always a good excuse for leaving the laptop switched off and relaxing.

Spent a night here with my Wife whilst on Family business. We loved the peaceful and relaxing escape from the modern world. Staff were welcoming, attentive and courteous from reception thru to the waiting staff in the restaurant and bar. We enjoyed the dinner in the main dining room. The steaks were delicious and good value. The Brie starter was delightful too. Breakfast menu and buffet was varied and the hot dishes to order were freshly cooked and served quickly and politely. The tinned fruit for cereals and watered down orange juice were a let down though! A huge thanks to Amber and Rebecca at reception. Also, thanks to Jonny and Dean in the dining room. All staff were very good and looked after us well during our brief stay. Thank you. Overall, we'd recommend this hotel and we'd stay here again should we be in the area.

Went to see the deer and have Sunday lunch ...Even though the deer park was closed we were still able to feed them with the food we bought at reception. The weather was brilliant so had a lovely walk around the grounds and through the church yard. Lunch was fab and the service was great. Big thankyou to Gina Kelly who really made us all welcome and gave us a giggle. Great to be able to sit outside too as it was so warm. Definitely going back soon

Fantastic location excellent friendly cheerful attentive staff great decor great food and the experience of feeding deer. Cram it into one sentence doesn't do justice to this true gem. Absolutely awesome. We went to relax and came away chilled and wishing we'd booked a longer stay. The sea bass and the curry as evening meals were nicely presented and exceptional in taste whilst the scrambled egg and salmon for breakfast was just as good. A real treat we will be back
