"First and last visit"

N4546AJdawnc, Darlington, United Kingdom 08/03/2020

Me and my partner went for Sunday lunch first time visit. We sat waiting a while waiting for someone to come take our order then while we was waiting for our starter to be served a lady came walking into the restaurant with a dog where people was eating their meals. We had the garlic mushrooms to start which was were really nice. Both me and my partner ordered a Sunday lunch my partner ordered belly pork I ordered chicken. These came with a very large Yorkshire Pudding which was tasteless and bland and a dish of cauliflower cheese and a dish of carrots and broccoli that looked like they they had come out of the microwave. My chicken was hard around the edges and very dry which I sent back advising what the problem was. This was replaced with a new plate of dinner. The chicken was still very dry and hard around the edges. Both meals were tasteless and both of us left most of the meals. When asking for the bill we was not asked if everything had been ok as I think the waiter knew we was not happy with either the meal or the service. Would definitely not recommend and would not go back.

"One Night Stay"

Andrew G, Penicuik, United Kingdom 25/02/2020

Stayed one night on 15 January 2020. Lots of parking. Friendly staff. Very clean. Mattress had probably seen better days -- very hard / lumpy -- but managed good sleep. Bedside lights had bulbs that were so weak we couldn't read by them! Dinner and breakfast in bar area -- very good. Real ale at bar, so I was very pleased. Would definitely use again.

"Cosy Warm Pub, friendly staff"

User 17/02/2020

Old coaching Inn with history, Excellent value for three star, friendly staff who sorted out problem with missing phone in the room. Clean, warm and cosy. Nice view of river. Good food. Seen many negative comments on here. What do you want for under £50 bed and cooked breakfast for two people? Would not hesitate to come back.

"Lovely place to stay"

SteveCathy P, North Walsham, United Kingdom 17/02/2020

The room was excellent with a view of the rather swollen river Tees, It was warm & cosy. The evening meal was fine too, the staff were friendly & efficient. The breakfast was warm, not hot. The sausage had been reheated as had the bacon but not enough. Everything else was really good but it was let down by the breakfast

"businees trip, made relaxed!"

ardenttraveller1964, London, United Kingdom 24/01/2020

i stayed here for 5 nights and the single room i booked was in fact a double en suite at the top of the hotel.the decor is very befitting for a country coaching inn, with the associated antiques and open fires. the staff are well drilled and always willing to was also good and a wide selection available, can personally recomend the salmon, and most definately the sticky toffe pudding. breakfast was good too, with the usual selections of pastries, cereals, juices and full english as well as omelletes, poached haddock etc.great value for money and the scenery nearby is excuisite , the river tweed adjacent to hotel and grounds. ample parking too!

Stopped over following a hard days work, comfy room, excellent staff and great Steak and Ale Pie. Good location and although January the area looked very good to have a walk out before evening meal. Would definitly stay again.

"Afternoon tea"

User 27/12/2019

Arrived at 3.30pm by appointment. Afternoon tea served immediately. At 4.15pm we gave up waiting for a pot of tea top up, or a pot of boiling water. No sign of the prosecco after 45 minutes wait. Poor service, the waitress was also bar maid and hotel receptionist. Disappointed to say the least. Not recommended.

"Christmas Party Night"

Joozie, Barnard Castle, United Kingdom 22/12/2019

We had our Christmas party booked here for 21st December, we went along very apprehensive as we had seen a couple of recent bad reviews, however, we were very impressed that the management and staff had obviously taken on board the previous comments and we had one of the best Christmas parties we've ever had !! There was not a huge crowd of people so the party was in a smaller room, which was lovely and warm, the food was very good, plenty of everything, and Paul the DJ and all members of staff could not do enough to ensure we all had a great night!! Paul had every person in the room dancing with a few party games thrown in !!! Thank you all at the George !!! Merry Christmas David & Julie Harper, Barnard Castle

We booked The George at Piercebridge for our Staff Xmas Party after attending last year, which had a brilliant DJ who provided party games, prizes and entertainment and great food. NONE of that happened this year. WHAT A SHAMBLES! We arrived to see 3 Tables, yes 3 tables set in the whole of the ballroom. As we walked down the stairs you could feel the change in temperature immediately, it was like walking into an Igloo and I bet the iconic Ice Hotel is warmer. We mentioned the heating straightaway but thought it would warm up once the other two tables arrived. The DJ came over (different one to last year) and asked what we were celebrating?!?! When we asked if he was doing entertainment it was a flat No none of that (upon booking our organizer was told this would be exactly the same as the previous year). So, we all took to our seats – the heating issue was not resolving and two of our party had to wear their coats throughout the entire meal which is a shame when you spend that little extra on a ‘Xmas party dress' that you cant show off. The other tables had also complained to staff about the cold and all we got told was the heating's been on since 5pm! Service was slow and it took nearly two hours to have 3 courses. There was long waits between courses and the food was cold, the turkey was dry and varied in portion sizes. We had three small terrines of veg and 3 half filled gravy boats between 12 of us! The veg landed first then the meals followed 5 mins later. One of our party is still waiting for carrots – the staff never at one point came to ask how our meal was and we had to chase them around the hotel to ask for more veg and gravy. The custard served with the pudding was abysmal and again it took my friend over 15mins to find someone to ask for more and again that was her walking all around the hotel with said plate in hand!! The chocolate terrine (that resembles scrambled egg on the pic) tasted like baby food we left it and the table after enduring the same xmas songs played on a loop for two hours. The lager went off so you had to wait an eternity for staff to go to the main bar to pull it, the till ran out of change and they also ran out of Gin glasses (again there was 3 tables)! The draft coming from behind the bar was unbelievable, I complained to the bar tender who said it was from the dishwasher and there was nothing she could do about it – you could see the cold air and a neighboring party thought it was smoke it was that visible. Once we had finished the meal, all 12 of us left the ballroom forsaking the disco to warm up. We found a lovely secluded area with anXmas tree and unlit fire. As many of our party needed to defrost we asked three times for the fire to be lit to no avail after 35mins we lit it ourselves. Once the fire was going we provided our own entertainment and actually had a good time. One of the other tables left early as they also and I quote stated ‘This is pants, were off home'. Which left one table in the ballroom to party to a dreadful non party playlist. The Party was due to finish at 12 midnight so at 11:36pm I went to ask for a Baileys as a nightcap to be told the bar was closed and only residents could order drinks. I pointed out the info on booking was 12 midnight but shot down again by the manager stating it's the law. NO last orders called at all – disappointing 25minute wait for a taxi with no drinks. On leaving my friend was complaining to the manager about all issues listed above, he could not have cared less. All we got told was that we had not mentioned any of this too him – mate we couldn't even find your staff never mind you! A round of drinks could have been offered but no it's against the law. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!!!!!! POOR FOOD!!!! POOR BAR!!!! ABYSMAL CUSTOMER SERVICE !!!!!!!!

"Works Christmas Party"

beverlydougan, Middlesbrough, United Kingdom 15/12/2019

Absolutely horrendous! Freeze cold function room, cold food and tiny portions. No gin glass and larger was off in the function room. Or change at the bar. Our party asked at least 5 times for the heating to be put on, completely ignored. DJ dire ( he didn't actually know what the party was for and had to ask us) played about 5 songs on a loop. As a party of 12 we left the function room around 10pm to sit upstairs in the bar as it was so cold. Discussed our complaints with the manager on leaving who was completely disinterested! Very disappointed and at £28 per head completely ripped off!!

"Nice place to go for a walk near the river"

User 10/12/2019

When we arrived we were asked to wait 5 minutes, we did just that.then a member of staff with a beard took our names and told us the directions to the rooms, we asked if we could book in for a meal at 7pm, he said no problem. he then left as a private function was bieng set up. our gut feeling told us that he had not booked us in for a meal. we asked a female member of staff to be told no new orders for meal bookings could be taken, so we told her we wanted our meal that we had booked.she went away and said yes that would now be alright. . the young female member of staff was very nervous in going into the kitchen to ask on our behalf. we did get our meal and it was lovely. Breakfast was confusing. poached eggs that were rock hard and one slice of bacon. no sugar on the table, no butter on the table. no milk .A pot of tea served in a coffee jug. the continental breakfast table was tiny.
