« Breakfast is of poor quality »

All the meats at breakfast were all well under cooked....ie raw relating to the bacon sauages!!!......they did not do anything about it all either when I made my complaint, I suggest you call me to discuss

    « Good hotel »

Forget the negitive reviews and try this hotel you won't be dissapointed. The staff are very helpfull and friendly. The hotel is clean and the rooms very comfortable, the food in the bar was very good, and the buffet breakfast also very good, give it a try if your out this way.

« Tired and in need of renovation. »

I stayed here for two nights in early May. The hotel is tired and in need of renovation. The doors had been removed from the built in wardrobe in the bedroom so clothing and luggage were always on view. The bathroom was very tired and toilet seat (see photo) well past its sell by date and needed to be replaced. There was "gaffer tape" securing a joint on the heated towel rail (see photo) which looked dangerous, although it may not have been. There were exposed heating pipes in the bedroom on which the insulation was torn. (see photo)The swimming pool changing rooms and steam room were simply not clean for which there is no excuse. The service in the dining room was "beyond bad".

« Great one night stay »

Breakfast included and leisure access! Really lovely hotel and a nice room too. Great secure parking and the staff seemed friendly. Really busy when we went as there was a wedding on but you couldn't hear this from the room.

    « Don't have the steak as it's a mis-steak!!! »

Stayed here for three nights had steak on the Monday which was supposed to be medium! It came out still mooing! I was then given a replacement which was average but acceptable! I had it again on the Wednesday which when a member of staff brought out mentioned I had complained on Monday to which I assumed today's steak would have been an improvement! Well no! I ended up removing from my mouth more mouthfulls than I swallowed as was like chewing a piece of leather! When I told the waitress politely she simply replied?it's just how steak is? (good one love! the 21 one day aged rib eye (the only option!) isn't worth a fiver! Very poor! I've still got jaw ache now! Not impressed!!!

« Average but not good »

At breakfast cooked items ran out, staff not monitoring adequately and when put out insufficient for guests waiting. light in room inoperative staff switched bulb from another lamp but left that inoperative. only one bath robe and mug for a room booked for a couple. Cleaning staff didn`t speak or understand English when requesting the mug or bath robe ha to go to reception.

    « Very disappointing »

We stayed here last Monday as part of a coach party and we were not impressed. The shower in our room was scalding. I went to reception the following day and asked to have it fixed. It was still scalding. It was not finally fixed until the third full day of our stay. I am not agile enough to get into a bath so I had to go without. The mattress was very hard - I like a firm mattress but this one left me waking up with pins and needles. Our room was not made up at all on one day despite putting the "please make up my room" notice on the door handle. On our final evening we were not all served at the same time on our table. There were six of us. One person ordered pasta on our table which arrived twenty minutes after the pork which the rest of us had ordered. Breakfast on the final day (Friday) was shambolic. I came into the dining hall at 8.30 am which was our allotted time. Six other people (not from our coach party) were sitting at our table so we had to find somewhere else to sit. I ended up having to clear a table just for the two of us. The coffee mugs ran out. Parts of the cooked breakfast ran out before being replenished. I was told there would be a twenty minute wait for pastries. Yes, the dining room was busy but the staff but the staff were struggling to keep up with demand. As for the food itself it was all right but I would have liked to have seen more vegetables served with the main course. The continental breakfast on display was very paltry. The bar staff also did not know how to pour a Guinness. There were two men waiting twenty minutes at the bar for the foam to settle in their glasses. I had a half pint of Guinness on my first night and it was certainly very foamy. Management seriously need to improve on this. It felt very amateur. It is not good enough for any coach party.

    « Coach Party »

First impression of Hotel. It is very dated but kept very clean. Walls are thin and you can here other people's TV's. Bed very uncomfortable as too soft and kept dipping into the middle. Bathrooms need refurbishing. We had a bath which was very difficult to get in and out of especially if you are not very mobile. They should be replaced with walk in showers. Food very indifferent. Who puts fruit salad and evaporated milk on the menu? Portions were probably over generous and quite a lot of wastage. Breakfast on our last morning was a farce. We were told to sit at the same table for our meals, but there were far too many people trying to find seats, and the cooked breakfast was brought out in dribs and drabs. No muesli available each day although it was listed on the menu.

    « Breakfast is a joke »

What a disaster breakfast has been .... packed out dining room no food available and stressed out staff... Really... if you have 150 people booked in for breakfast then prepare for that amount.. I got the dregs of what resembled food on the chafe trays... I spent extra money on what I would have got a good slap up down the road at the diner... I have stayed at your hotel over the past 6 yrs visiting family.. but I think this experience is going to make me reconsider alternative accommodation when i visit.... That pic us what I paid for and not even a proper plate or cutlery was available o ate breakfast out of a cereal bowl with a spoon what I got of it... Shame on you ..

    « Lovely afternoon tea »

The afternoon tea here was lovely. It starts off with a starter then sandwiches, scones,a mixture of sweet tarts then a triffle to finish! Also a selection of teas. All food tasted fresh. I was very full up. I will be recommending to friends.

    « Dated & basic »

We stayed here for 1 night as a friend was having a party here, which entitled us to cheaper room rate which I thought was good, £65 for the night including breakfast. The hotel looks very dated The room particularly the bathroom was also very dated Our room was so hot too, and no air conditioning which wasn't pleasant. The fan provided was ok. Room was comfy and clean Leisure facilities were ok. Pool and sauna good. The steam room we found just a bit weird! And not like any we had ever been in before. A basic hotel that does what it says, bed and breakfast.

    3
    « Not that brilliant »

Hotel seems rather dated. Reception efficient but no one there when booking out, and no apology when assistant did arrive. Room was OK - Bed very comfortable. Bathroom dated. Very quiet so good nights sleep. Had supper in restaurant - well presented food although can't say the same about staff and it looked like none had ironed their shirts or blouses. Only three tables occupied and confusion over orders. The carpet by the door leading outside was DISGUSTING covered with crumbs, crusts items of food. I spoke to one of the waiters who said it was gone 6.00 and there was no one to clean the carpet - REALLY. At least it was cleaned before breakfast, which was help-yourself and warm rather than hot.

    « Overnight Stay »

My fiance and I stayed the night here Saturday 14th April. I booked an overnight stay with breakfast and leisure access via Groupon. On the drive in, the hotel looked like a 60's throwback but we were pleasantly surprised when we entered the hotel and found it to be nicely decorated. We didn't eat dinner at the hotel but can definitely comment on the breakfast. Plenty of choice in the way of continental and cooked items. Breakfast staff were very friendly and accommodating. We did pay a visit to the pool, it's fairly small and as it was a Saturday afternoon it was populated with children so we chose to use the Sauna instead. Only criticism is that the walls are thin. I could hear children chatting in the room next to ours and the people at the other side plugging stuff into the wall but this didn't affect how we slept; beds were very comfortable!

    « Best Western - Marks Tey »

Stayed here with my partner for Valentine's Day. Must say this hotel is better looking in the pictures than in reality. Very average hotel, I'd say you get what you pay for but I have stayed in cheaper hotels that looked much better than this. We were placed on the top floor and there was no lift access so had to struggle up and down the stairs with our heavy bags. The rooms were small, but average. To use the swimming facilities you have to go through the bar & outside, into a separate building. We were not provided with robes or slippers as we were not 'executive members' so we were not eligible for robes or slippers. so literally had to pack a bag with our bathing suits inside it so we would not have to walk past the hotel guests dressed inappropriately. Everything about this hotel is mediocre. Had to go to reception to borrow the one iron and ironing board they had in the whole building and then struggle up the stairs again with them. Breakfast was good, kind of hard to mess up an English breakfast so..

    « Short break »

Stayed with a friend for 2 nights , beds extremely comfortable , room on the small side a bit dated , there was no phone in our room , a plug socket didn't work, very clean , staff very friendly, drinks expensive but the food was lovely overall we enjoyed it

« Good hotel that we love coming too »

Came here with my partner as we needed a nice, quiet time just us two. The location is perfect for that, and the beds are absolutely lush. Staff are very friendly and the only hotel we make sure we get up for breakfast for. :)

    3
    « Average »

The location of the hotel is good and there are plenty of great restaurants nearby. The breakfast at the hotel is great and there is so much choice! We stayed for 2 nights and on the first night there was a wedding going on which we thought would disturb us however the staff worked hard to make sure noise was kept to a minimum and we witnessed a staff member politely asking the children not to run around the corridors which was great customer service. Unfortunately on the second night there was a party of some sort going on in the bar area and the music was extremely loud, we were lenient but at midnight we got fed up of the loud bass, so my husband went down to complain and the night manager seemed shocked that my husband had come down to complain!! To their credit once he had complained the music was turned off straight away but we couldn't believe that the noise had continued so loud for so long! The hotel is an okay place to stay for visiting local attractions and I suppose you can say you get what you pay for.

    « A good place to stay »

Went there for an 80th birthday celebration. It was a complete package - meal, overnight stay and breakfast. The birthday meal was excellent. The band that was there were very good. Unfortunately I do not know their name sung songs from the 50' onwards. Thoroughly enjoyed them as you could dance to them including ballroom and Latin. The bedrooms are very clean and tidy and comfortable. The only minor thing was the breakfast. The fact that it was self service was not the problem, the trouble was it did not stay warm for long. But apart from that I would not hesitate to stay there again. A good place to stay.

    « Very pleasant stay »

Stayed two nights whilst on a spa break in Colchester. Clean, comfortable and the barman made us cocktails - what more can you want? Easy parking, not too far from the town centre and a lovely diner across the road for American style food

    « Awful hotel »

The staff don't answer the phone. 2nd time I've stopped here and had to walk to the bar to order rooms service. Tried to call reception and the phone was left to ring. I went down to the reception and called from my mobile only to see the girl on shift pick up the phone and hang up whilst I was standing there. Went back to the bar and the phone was ringing again. 3 staff just keep walking past ignoring the phone even when the were not serving. Lots of staff standing by entrance to the restaurant talking. This place would make faulty towers look good!

« Did what was required »

A useful venue if you need mid Essex. Good venue for a party, which is what I was at. I didn't use the pool or spa which I expect add value. Party catering was interesting - very good Cornish pasty pieces and very spicy chicken wings!

« Groupon midweek break deal »

Stayed here recently with my husband on a 2 night B&B break purchased with a Groupon voucher. We had stayed at the hotel previously around 14 years ago and nothing much has changed. Yes, the hotel is a little dated but the rooms are spotlessly clean and have everything you need. The breakfast buffet is very good. We ate in the hotel restaurant on both nights and were happy with the food we had. The staff are young but they are helpful. My husband used the gym and pool on both days and was more than happy. Wifi was good and loads of car parking. All in all a good stay and we will definitely stay again.

    « good overnight stay »

we had originally booked for 2 nights, but due to a sudden death in the family we had to alter our plans, reservations were excellent. We were checked in pretty quickly, oly niggle was as we drove in we were stopped by a security guy who wanted to know what we were doing there! when we said we were staying there he immediately asked what room number,we replied sorry cant tell you as we have not checked in yet,he then let us through. Not a great welcome and he did explain that there had been some thefts from cars. The roomwas clean and spacious,if a little dated, the bathrrom was fine. Had a lovely comfy bed and a great sleep, shower was nice hot and powerful, breakfast was a good help yourself buffet and was lovely. We have already booked to stay again in april, and we are looking forward to returning.

    « OK »

Had my first stay at Marks Tey Hotel after many years. Nice friendly staff who are very helpful. Bar meal was very good and served incredibly quickly. Room ok a bit dated. TV pathetic the size of a laptop. Breakfast was ok but not as good as previous. The stay was ok but not as good as when it was an independent. More of a coach hotel if im honest rather then being on your own. Good Value though.

    « Helpful friendly staff »

We received a wonderful friendly welcome on check in. We booked a Executive room as was a special birthday celebration, but the first room allocated had a connecting door and a tiny tv. I was disappointed that this was the standard of an executive room and asked to be moved. No problem at all, and we was allocated a larger room with a good size tv. The only fault was a plug socket was hanging off the wall. We booked a celebratory meal but was initially rushed to order the drinks before we sat down, then rushed to order food as they were "busy" with events and a large party to serve. We ordered but waited an hour for our main. The main waitress was wonderful and very friendly. The food was excellent when it arrived. Great nights sleep and a friendly check out experience. We would return to this hotel due to the amazing friendly staff.

« No TV, poor breakfast »

I visited this hotel for a function of around 120 people, soon after we checked in I informed the reception that the TV wasn't working after ringing twice the said that they would send someone as soon as possible, the function was for most of the afternoon to late evening. In return to the room at the evening the TV was still not working. During the afternoon we went to the bar ordered a beer and a coffee, the pint of beer must have been a good 2 inches from the top of the glass, when I asked the bartender if that was a pint she more or less snatched it back and filled it to a pint without a word of sorry. On checking out I informed the receptionist who just said they would get it fixed but showed no concern that I never had TV. The breakfast was also not very good, poor quality goods. All in all not a very good hotel and with dated decor and furniture. Definitely wouldn't stay again.

    « Sunday Afternoon Tea »

Had an excellent Afternoon Tea at this Hotel. We were the only table in the Restaurant being served, others were in the Bar. Table was pre set with a basket of assorted Teas.Hot water was provided in a teapot covered with tea cosy. Cups had a removable filter, so you made your own choice of teas First course was Amuse Bouche of crayfish salmon, and egg on a serving spoon (delicious). Then a rack of cut sandwiches, a rack of assorted cakes, and a rack of scones, cream, and jam. To finish there was a lovely dish of trifle We also had a glass of Prosecco. Service was as required.

« Better than reviews had stated »

After staying here years ago and it not being great I was worried it wouldn't have improved, I was wrong. Good warm clean room and friendly staff much much better. The room seemed recently decorated and everything was Clean

    « Disapointing »

Hotel shabby needs updating corridors and rooms very cold and draughty. Shower and bath water not hot enough, lack of bar and breakfast staff. No white bread constantly running out of beans, toaster that didn't toast.

    « Anniversary weekend »

Stayed here for 2 nights in February. Groupon deal 2 nights b&b for £109. Being a cheap deal, didn't expect to much and really surprised. Reception check in very pleasant, room , could do with a bit of up dating but good size, very clean, warm and great shower. Bar area quite nice and lunch menu same as the evening menu. Main restaurant in the evening, could have had a larger selection and quality to do with some improvements. Adequate. Ate out second evening.

    3
    « Good and bad! »

Paid for upgrade room....big and large furniture but torn curtain and unsafe lampshade! Room comfortable and quiet with tea/coffee, fridge, water etc. Pool really warm but small and other areas of the sports centre dirty

    3
    « Valentines weekend away »

I have rated this hotel 3 star based on staff customer service which was lovely and good location and cleanliness .There's so much improvement needed in the rooms quiet old vintage the reception area is modernised everywhere else looks old . Booked 2 nights stay with breakfast included, buffet options quiet limited and food was cold and unappealing. Wouldn't recommend this hotel for anyone in their 20s or 30s this is more of a grown folks stay talking of people in their 50+ those were the majority in the breakfast area anyway .

    3
« Overall a decent hotel with good size swimming pool and steam room etc. »

I stayed in this hotel for a night, and firstly the Wi-Fi wasn't working which was a disappointment as I had brought my laptop from London. The Leisure facilities were separate from the hotel itself so you have to walk outside across to the leisure centre. The restaurant was average and decent prices too. Breakfast was fairly average too, the only other thing that had let the hotel down really was that the room I had stayed in was cold. And even by the next morning when the staff on reception tried to sort out portable heating out it still wasn't working. So overall considering it was winter season I wasn't 100% comfortable.

    4
« Chill time in Essex »

After a hectic week I came to Essex to recuperate and got a great deal and comfort at the Best Western in Marks Tey. Fully recommend this hotel for access to Stanstead airport and all routes East. There is a pool and full service restaurant. Checkout at 11am is always a plus!

    2
« Food lets the hotel down »

Pleasant room, great power shower and reception staff nice. But where this hotel fails is on the catering side. Food was disappointing and not up to the standard you would expect. Restaurant does not run efficiently. Staff pleasant but not efficient. So disappointing, would not recommend this hotel and definately not returning!

    5
    « Nice and pleasant »

I stayed here for a couple of nights on business. I always managed to get a space on the car park at the front of the hotel, when returning from business meetings. The staff in the hotel were pleasant and helpful. The room was a good size, clean and tidy. There were plug sockets at the side of the bed which is always helpful. The wifi was fairly easy to access and was reliable. The breakfast was buffet style and was plentiful. I did use the leisure facilities once, there weren't any staff there to begin with, so I returned to the hotel to check on this. When going back to the leisure building, there was now a member of staff on the reception desk. Check out was fast and efficient. Overall good value for money.

    4
« Dated but friendly and good value for money »

OK, so this hotel could never be considered luxurious but, for the price I paid, it was excellent value for money with friendly staff. It's ideal for the business traveller as you don't feel a fool sitting at dinner or breakfast by yourself. Everything is a bit dated but you have all you need in the room, the restaurant is surprisingly good and the gym and (small) swimming pool are a good extra. Would return again if I was in the area and could get a deal.

    5
« Good Location and Very Nice Hotel »

Recommended if you need to stay near Colchester, Kelvedon, Tiptree. We had a very comfy double room and were updated to an executive room at no extra cost.staff were friendly and the hotel has a nice restaurant and a bar area. The food prices are very reasonable for this quality of hotel. Parking is a bit hit and miss as very busy but we always managed to find a spot.

« Good location and decent hotel »

Very nice hotel this one and in a really great location for Colchester, Tiptree and area. It is right next to the A12 and so easy to find and easy to get to all main local routes. The room was a very comfortable double and we were updated to an executive room at no extra cost. The restaurant is roomy and we had a lovely breakfast here. There is a bar for those relaxing drinks after a day out and there is a large car park, although the car park was always very full. We did find parking but I think this might be a problem when events are on here. There is a leisure centre but we did not use this. The staff were very friendly and helpful but we had no problems to need help with.

    « Superb Afternoon Tea »

I met with a group of friends to celebrate a 50th birthday. The Afternoon Tea (at lunch time) was superb; mini prawn cocktails were an inspired starter, followed by sandwiches, cakes and huge tasty scones with jam and cream. The kitchen staff were thoughtful enough to put the vegetarian and meat sandwiches on separate platters to suit our vegetarian guest. She was also provided with a fruit cocktail to replace the prawn starter. Everything was well presented and very yummy and accompanied by a glass of prosecco each. The afternoon was finished off with a mini trifle, which completely finished us off! It was all accompanied by unlimited amounts of tea and coffee. I must say that it was one of the best teas I've ever had!! Staff were excellent too. A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon!

    « Impressive »

On arrival their was a nice clean smell wafting round the hotel in all areas, which was very pleasant. The lady on the reception couldn't have been more helpful, and whilst the rooms were a bit tired, the comfort was not. The food in the bar was of good quality and served quickly and with a smile, and we attended a function later that was really good, thanks to the layout and the staff, as was the food and the service.

    « 3 year anniversary night away »

My boyfriend and I stayed here for the night and it was lovely. Looks deceiving from the front but inside the decor is lovely. The bar food was really good too. The rooms are good value for money and are just what you need. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We visited Colchester zoo as it's only a 10 minute drive away. In the evening we went to colchester town and ate in Middletons steak house and grill. I would definitely recommend. Overall a very pleasant stay here.

    « Exellent »

This hotel is beautiful and we enjoyed the leisure access too likewise the food, the staff here are very friendly and so helpful every single one of them that I came across always has a smile on their face and ready to help Dave and offered to change rooms for us if we're not happy with the heating, which was ok- we just needed help to higher it and they did. The receptionist was particularly helpful, Amazing people.

« New Year's Eve dinner and dance »

Thank you all so very much for a wonderful evening. We were a group of around 26 for a dinner and dance with a sleep over and breakfast. We ate a fab 5 course dinner with a beautifully laid table, eating whilst we listened to a lovely young singer. Later we danced to the-resident DJ stopping for the fireworks at midnight and then more dancing til around 1,30. Our room was in second floor. It was very clean and very comfortable bed, we had tea and coffee facilities and our bathroom was very spacious. Breakfast in the morning was very nice, a good selection was on offer and it was available until 10.30 which is amazing. We didn't use the pool or spa facilities but it looked very nice. The staff worked tirelessly throughout the evening, very friendly and attentive. There is a great car park to the rear and to the front. The hotel has lovely gardens too surrounding. We all had a great evening and that is due to the really good menu served, the hard working staff, the hotel itself which was beautifully decorated throughout and the comfort of the bedroom. Thank you all so much for our wonderful evening. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

    « Disappointing »

I booked the hotel as a bit of chill time between Christmas and New Year. I only live 8 miles away so it really was a quick overnight break. I booked an executive room which was slightly dearer than a standard double. I'd looked at the website and it appeared to be just what I wanted. Beautiful rooms, a lovely restaurant with a beautiful a la carte menu along with an ?extensive wine list', perfect!! However I was extremely disappointed. When we arrived we were informed that the restaurant was shut. We were told that we could eat ?nearly' the same food in the bar. No way was the menu the same though and certainly not what I wanted. The food I had (Lamb Rump) was beautiful but to eat it leaning over a bar table just wasn't acceptable. I also requested a wine list which was by no means ?extensive' but did have a number of nice wines. However when I tried to order I was informed that there was only a bottle of Pino Grecio or Chardonnay, nothing else! Why on earth did they give me a wine list. Following on from our meal my husband asked the barmaid to add extra to our bill as a tip. She told him not to bother as she wouldn't get it anyway, it all went to the company. Wasn't really the response we wanted to hear. Both the restaurant and our room were very cold. There didn't appear to be any heating on. At one point I nearly returned to my room for my coat. Maybe my own fault but I wanted to dress up a little for dinner, pointless for the bar though. We did manage to turn the radiator on in our room but it would of been a much nicer welcome if the room had been warm to start off with. On a positive note our room was lovely. Very clean and comfortable. Sadly I'm not sure we will be returning!

    « Staffing problems! »

From the moment I walking in, you could see the staff didn't really have a clue what was going off! The front desk staff were totally inexperienced in dealing with people. The skeleton bar staff were totally incompetent. The actual hotel was quite nice, the room was very tidy and comfortable. The staff problems they had, ruined my stay. Took me 30mins to check out! Management need to actually manage what they have a lot better.

    « Not a bad hotel...... »

This was the second time I had stayed at the hotel and staff were very friendly, both in the bar and restaurant. I asked for a 'quiet' room and got one without any fuss. The food was delicious (Caesar salad). When I stayed there before, I had breakfast and the was bl***y good too! Would definitely recommend..........

    « Break away »

Me and my husband stayed in this wonderful hotel polite staff and very helpful. Can't wait to stay again. I would tell family and friends this hotel is the best place to stay if they ever wonna a night away. Very pleased with the swimming pool and we'll.

« Lovely hotel with good rooms and good food »

Stayed here overnight and although the outside of the hotel looks dated the inside was modern and comfortable. My room was warm and bed comfortable. Complimentary toiletries provided and evening meal and breakfast were good. Staff helpful. Hotel about 10 minutes walk from rail station over flyover, wrap up warm for the walk if going in winter.

« Great value and friendly staff »

Overall my boyfriend and I had a great stay, from the professional lady on reception, to a sweet friendly waitress when we had our meal. There was a big Xmas party in the restaurant so we ate in the side room, we were told it was just bar food, and although the food a little bland, it was warm and filled a hole, the pudding was great. Our room was comfy, yes the hotel is a little dated but not all hotels can be modern, this one was built in the 70s, cleanliness is more important which it was. The pool was great, we went Saturday evening and Sunday morning and it was only us and another couple in there. The breakfast was the best meal , good selection, tasty and helping yourself to the hot and cold food plus drinks is always a winner. I would definitely recommend this hotel. The only think we could fault were the pillows a little lumpy, bed a little short and duvet quite thin, no extra blanket in room but we kept warm!

« Good stay at a good price »

Stayed here for two nights as we were attending a wedding. The rooms were spacious and clean and the staff friendly and accomodating. I have stayed at other best western hotels before and always found them very basic and in need of an update. This was different and we found the accomodation very clean and modern. I would have no hesitation in staying here again,

    « Avoid if possible »

We stayed here for two nights while we attended a wedding at nearby Layer Marley Tower. The wedding and the wedding venue were superb, but the same cannot be said for this hotel. It was not a pleasant experience so avoid this hotel if at all possible. Other members of our family were staying in the hotel and so the only positive aspect of it all was that we could all stay in the same place. Other than that, as others have mentioned, it is like going back to the 1970,s in terms of the decor. 'Tired' looking is being generous. No money has been spent on this hotel in a very long time and I am surprised it was so busy. Someone mentioned that it has a four star rating but one star would be much more appropriate. We had an evening meal on our arrival and despite previous comments from others indicating the food was good, we were not impressed. Worst Western hotel would be a more accurate description of this hotel. I am trying to think of any positives and yes some of the staff were quite pleasant but that is as far it is goes. Even the breakfast was disappointing. It was badly organised and the food was fairly grim. Thankfully we did not have to stay at the hotel for long. This is well below Premier Inn standards and more expensive to boot. Please do avoid this hotel if you possibly can and stay at a nearby b&b or hotel that has a decent write up. We are very honest reviewers and have stayed at a range of different hotels but this one is definitely one of the worst we can remember. As I say, apart from this hotel we had a great time. Would definitely recommend Layer Marney Tower as a wedding venue.

« Rooms in need of updating, breakfast poor »

We stayed here for two nights and initially thought we were getting a budget option which was great as we were attending a wedding and just wanted a room for two nights. On arrival we discovered that breakfast was not included which added £40 to the bill for two people/ 2 mornings. No longer so budget... Room was tidy but tired. Towels crispy. Toilet didn't flush. Hair dryer fuse blew (but to their credit they brought me a replacement within minutes). Breakfast was poor, very greasy with limited options if you don't want a greasy fry up. It's all self service which meant it was a free for all and not a relaxing experience. At night we could hear the drunk people shouting down the corridor so we didn't sleep well. Overall, fine if you just need a place to stay but if you want a romantic night away or something with character this is not the place for you.

« Reasonable hotel for a reasonable price - but stay away if you are seeking a spa break »

We stayed at the hotel for two nights over the weekend on a winter sale deal. The room was clean and comfortable and provided the necessary facilities, although it needed a little updating. The room had windows that opened (although there was quite a lot of traffic noise) and heating that you could control so that it didn't become over stuffy. This resulted in a decent nights sleep. The hotels leisure facilities, particularly the changing rooms would also benefit from a refurbishment. The pool is small at 15 metres and quickly crowded, This was disappointing as I had intended to have a swim whilst staying at the hotel. The sauna and stream room are also small. The gym, again small, is well equipped with good air conditioning which enabled a decent workout. In summary about the leisure facilities, stay away from here if you are seeking a 'spa break.' The staff were professional and polite. The breakfast although self service was more than adequate with plenty of choice and caters for dietary requirements. We didn't eat in the restaurant for our evening meal as their was a limited menu and it looked over priced despite the 'special' deal that was on offer

This hotel need updating and a big overhaul, the pool, sauna, stream room and changing areas are well below standards and look like a good cleaning would help. Noise from A12 kept me awake most of the night

Just used for a one night stay. Room good and clean. Breakfast was included within the price of the room, very good value. Had dinner in the bar good value for money. Free wifi which is also great value. Would use again if needed.

    « Best for beds! »

Room very clean, warm & relaxing if slightly dated fittings. Super comfortable bed, slept well. Could have done with another ceiling light as sometimes difficult to read. Good blackout curtains & secure windows. Easy free parking & plenty of bus services to Colchester City almost outside hotel. Gym/pool attached to hotel. Breakfast excellent with varied choices. Scrambled eggs on Friday10 Nov were best I've ever had, fresh batch, light & fluffy. Chose same dinner 3 evenings, but superb poached salmon & veg dish on Tuesday 7th was not so good next two evenings! Understand reason was different chefs each night. Room TV stopped working Wednesday am, reported to reception 9am but had to report twice again on Thursday before somebody to fix 6pm! Very disappointing as we missed some favourite programmes. All staff very cheerful & friendly, especially Resturant Manager, Wendy Ho.

« Clean and nice room! »

My husband and I stayed here on our wedding night. When we arrived the check in was smooth and our room was nice. All we wanted was somewhere nice to stay for the night after a long but lovely day. We slept well and had a nice breakfast in the morning. Would recommend this place.

    « Wedding trip »

We stayed here for 2 nights to attend a close friends wedding. We stayed fri night and sat night and the wedding was held here. The staff are very friendly and the rooms are very comfortable. The breakfast is fantastic and well worth the extra £10 each. The wedding was excellent too.

« Adequate Hotel that is stuck in a time warp »

I think this hotel is marmite. Personally, I LOVED the "dated feel" to this place. Staff were friendly, rooms were adequate. Food in the restaurant was lovely, especially love the breakfast choices. Be careful of parking restrictions. There are PLENTY of signs around!

    « Comfortable stay »

We got quite a fright when seeing the external appearance of the hotel however once entering the hotel it was very pleasant. The hotel staff were friendly and very accommodating when it came to shuffling of room numbers. The hotel rooms are basic but sufficient. Beds and pillows are very comfortable. The buffet breakfast spread is lovely with a choice of hot breakfast and continental options.

« Mixed bag but the poor outweighed the good »

I was expecting the hotel to be a bit dated which I believe is reflected in the price however my first impression was positive as the lady on reception was a credit to the hotel and was professional yet informative. The room was perfectly fine for what I needed it for (a place to get ready / sleep for a family event ) and I left the room feeling positive about the hotel. My opinion changed when I met up with family in the bar before our event I ordered a bottle of Prosecco (£35) but found the lady behind the bar to be very hostile. As well as not being very friendly she watched me struggle to the table with glasses and bottle and didn't offer to help or even open the bottle or offer a wine bucket . After a lovely family meal we came back to the bar and the same member of staff was hostile to another member of our party - and didn't even open the bottle for us (and had even seemed hostile to a bride who was also in the bar - on her wedding night !! ). Room service was good value and everything else was good (the hotel is a bit outdated but 99% of the staff made it a 4/5 experience) but a hotel is only as good as the weakest member of staff who deals with the public therefore it's only a 2.5/5 because of this )

    « Pre wedding stay »

Stayed at this hotel the night before and the night of a friend's daughter's wedding at Layer Marney It's true the hotel looks dated and could definitely do with an up-grade but despite this - we found our room (executive room with air con + £30 per night from the standard room), to be spacious, comfortable and fine for a two night stay. Having seen some of the trip advisor comments - we were expecting the worst from the catering - but the staff were friendly, the food was much better than expected and although as said, it's a bit dated it was OK for what we wanted. This being said - our view is that it is expensive for this standard of hotel. If you were to book a Premier Inn the rooms would be better but the catering similar. However breakfast was excellent and we came away much happier than we had expected. Don't write this hotel off. If you can see past the dated architecture and décor - it does what it says on the tin.

    « Adequate but dated »

Stayed one night due to local wedding. Perfectly adequate but dated. Needs a good update. No decaf coffee in bar!! These days this is an essential item to offer customers, felt like a bit of a time warp.

    « "VERY DISAPPOINTING STAY" »

Stayed here as part of a group holiday last week. Food was awful. The wardrobe in my room had no doors on it, they ran out of toilet rolls & one day my bed was not made.Staff were all very pleasant & polite .... but it wasn't their fault, just very poor management. This is a 4 star rated hotel - I wouldn't give it one. Come on Best Western time you sorted this one out!!

« Incompetent and inexperienced staff. Terrible customer service »

This is the 1st time I have written a negative Tripadvisor Review. I do so, as it is possibly the worst hotel I have ever stayed at and because Best Wetern have ignored my concerns repeatedly This hotel is a shambles. The staff are nearly all young, inexperienced and incompetent. - I waited 30 minutes at the swimming pool front desk as nobody was there. - At night, when we came back we were told that all hotel key cards did not work and that we would be let into our rooms 1 by 1, by the manager with the master key! Worst of all, I was overcharged by £20 for a bill at the bar. I called up Best Western expecting a 5 minute conversation, and a quick refund. 1 month later, the hotel replied and said that I had ordered a bunch or stuff, that I did not. I explained to Best Western many times, that they had made a mistake, but the hotel did not reply and did not send a receipt. The overcharge is not large, but Hilton/IHG would have refunded the money without question We only stayed at the hotel for 1 night, but this place is clearly a shambles

« Ok grub, good service »

Visited with a colleague whilst in the area as we had time for a catch up. It was very busy with a couple of coach trips in so chose to just order a bar meal. A feta cheese salad for me (there wasn't too many vegetarian choices) and a pasta dish for my colleague. Meals arrived quickly, were good size portions and good quality. Reasonable price, good service nothing not to like really.

« This Noisy Hotel needs to Re-examine itself. »

Stopped here as part of a big group of friends. Ours was a nice 'Executive' room with plenty of space & good standard of cleanliness. Absolutely amazed that it's been described as "very comfortable" as our duvet was heavy, lumpy and did not do justice to the reasonable quality of the mattress. Woken up in the morning by music blaring, was about to complain about the people next door when realised it was the horrible piped music in the corridor outside. Had a day out & returned wanting a rest before going out for the evening. Lay on the bed but blaring music was still awful. Eventually someone complained & it was turned down. Sunday night a group of us met up in the bar...music was playing again, AND a radio, simultaneously!!! We couldn't hear eachother speak for the noise. After 3 complaints the music was turned off but the radio was on another system. Eventually that was turned off too. Who on earth are they aiming to please? We were probably the youngest people in the bar, but the genre of music was aimed at a far younger demographic than us. Quiet, background music is one thing, but this headache-inducing intrusion into conversation ruined the evening. All this racket, no available lifts or help with suitcases, only 1 towel put in a room booked for two, added to the fact that 3 of us each had to return to Reception because our key cards failed to work, makes me wonder what on Earth the management of this place think they are doing. This hotel need to buck its ideas up if it ever expects to get repeat business.

« Great cut and colour = a great experience »

We are staying at the hotel for 4 nights and saw that there was a hair salon in house so I decided to have a bit of a pamper. I booked for a cut and colour and was booked in with Heidi. I had read the reviews beforehand and was very pleased that Heidi would be cutting my hair. Well, I wasn't disappointed - she was warm and friendly, listened to what I wanted, offered some ideas (which I went with) - she is very skilled (and talented) and, should we return to Marks Tey, I wouldn't hesitate in having Heidi cut my hair again. I left the salon feeling relaxed and happy. Thank you, Heidi :-)

    « Terrible »

Absolutely a terrible hotel. I was served today by a young girl that was rude, she stunk of smoke. 4 star hotel more like 0. The state of the uniform is horrible. A poor boy and girl was doing the restaurant by themselves. I was with coach party, never been disappointed. Saw one of the staff assault one of the other staff. Sort your staff out and the way they smell.

« Very comfortable stay at the Best Western Marks Tey »

Stayed for 1 night B&B at this Hotel.....very comfortable rooms and very clean. Staff were very friendly when booking in and the hotel had a nice atmosphere, plenty of parking and easy to get to...The choice for breakfast was excellent and all fresh cooked...this was help yourself and my only complaint would be that a machine for helping yourself to tea, help yourself to everything in fact which can be tiresome but of course very continental...it would have helped when we arrived in the large dining room to have some help with where everything was...but it was all very tasty.....

    « Ok »

Just really OK. The room was comfortable and clean.. Needs a bit better soundproofing.. We didn't really have time to test the facilities... Tip though.. DON'T rely on a Sat nav to get there as it puts you on the main A12...

    « London stay »

Stayed here in August with husband and kids. Lovely hotel in a nice location. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Hotel is clean and food is good. Used it as a base to visit London. Less than 10 minute walk to Marks Tey train station that brings you straight into Liverpool St. in the heart of London. Hotel has a pool that kids used and said it was lovely. Visited Colchester Zoo also which is well worth a visit for anyone with kids. Would stay here again.

    « A relaxing weekend »

I have read all the negative reports about this hotel and cannot agree with them. My wife and I found everything fine and would certainly return. If I really must search for a niggle...............only one armchair in a double room!

« Comfortable stay in slightly dated hotel »

We stayed here for 3 nights. This is quite a large hotel with perhaps 100 rooms. The decor, furniture and fittings are rather dated and some things are showing signs of wear. But the room was comfortable and was kept meticulously clean and tidy. The staff were unfailingly kind, considerate, friendly and polite. The restaurant is large (of course) and perhaps slightly barrack-like for some tastes. Breakfast followed the usual pattern for large hotels - coffee or tea, cereals and fruit, cooked breakfast or cheese and cold meats, toast , croissants etc. The only small irritation was the piped music - fine for those who like vanilla pop music, otherwise a slightly tedious backdrop. For dinner there is either the a la carte menu or food from the bar/room service menu. The food from these menus was generally well cooked and well presented. Allergies and food intolerances were catered for. One surprise was the fettucini (on the bar menu) which turned out to be spaghetti apparently cut into short pieces - but it tasted fine! Would we stay here again? Probably if we are in the area. The kindness and personality of the staff make up for the small negatives. We certainly slept well in a comfortable bed and were not disturbed by the busy main roads or Stansted airport nearby. Thank you.

    « Good for a 1 night stay »

Beautiful entrance to the hotel and lobby.. hallways are nice leading to the rooms.. Rooms are ok, bathrooms could be cleaner, toilet seat scrached and staines, tiles loose but comfort of the bed makes up for it.. Spa is ok and food is excellent in the restaurant..

« Best Western, Marks Tey »

I have to say when I looked at/read the reviews before my visit I was somewhat concerned but I now feel the reviews were very misleading/unfair. Firstly the rates were excellent, very good value for money. The food/restaurant offer was good and very tasty and the free use of the pool/spa was a really delightful added bonus. The room was definitely a little tired and could do with a fresh lick of paint and new carpets, needing a general updating, especially the bathroom. There were a few problems like no telephone service to reception/rest of the hotel, a brief power cut, bathroom taps that initially wouldn't work, an incorrect room service order and a TV in a rather strange place but the room was very clean, the linen fresh cotton and the bed very comfortable indeed. Also as a double room there should be two chairs, not only one. What was exceptional was the staff who without exception were kind, friendly, helpful and fell over themselves to try and put things right and make things as comfortable as possible. I absolutely cannot fault them.

« A Short Holiday in Essex and Suffolk »

We were two members of a small coach party. The accommodation was quite good. Clean and spacious. The staff were obliging, We ate from a small menu appropriate to this kind of group but the food was excellent. Wedding parties are catered for at weekends and these can be noisy. But our room and dining room was well away from the throngs.

    « Meal Out »

We didn't stay here but went out for a meal for our anniversary as they had been advertising locally as a restaurant venue. What a disappointment. The tables are old and rickety and don't have cloths and the salt and pepper mills were the ready filled ones you buy from the supermarket for a pound with the labels taken off. It''s like sitting in a jaded cafe. On top of which I had to ask the waitress ten minutes after we'd sat down if she'd take our drinks order and then when my husband ordered a Guinness he was bought a pint of Heiniken. The food was fine until it came to dessert, my hubby ordered cheese and biscuits but asked if it could come with chutney or pickle instead of tomato relish? When it came out she said "no" and it was served with the tomato relish on the plate regardless. Which neednless to say wasn't eaten. He'd rather it had been left off. After we sat back after finishing our meal the waitress came up at double quick speed and asked if we wanted the bill? No offer of coffee. We said yes, and when she'd gone we laughed as it was clear she wanted rid of us. We definitely won't be back. I had planned to take my daughter here for afternoon tea as a treat, but I certainly won't now I've had a meal there. We'll remember this anniversary meal for all the wrong reasons.

    « Not great! »

We booked this hotel to attend a friends wedding nearby. We had two rooms - one standard and one advertised as executive!! As you will see from my profile, I visit a fair few hotels for both business and pleasure, so think I am more than qualified to draw parallels. This hotel was a like a 70s throwback to the crossroads motel!! Our so called executive room was poorly equipped. No special touches or anything to justify why a premium was being charged. Our visit was in August. Outside the temperatures were quite hot. However inside the hotel was set throughout to 19degrees!! If I tell you I set my house to 20 in the winter - this may give you a feel for how hot the rooms were. We brought this to the attention of the reception in person. The attitude was dismissive - that's what we've set - it's not changing. The engineer was even more offhand. In our executive room the air con unit was thoughtfully fitted inside the wardrobe. Making the room super stuffy. In our second room they were given a cheap desk fan. As we were part of a large party of 50 guests we thought it would be nice to have breakfast together before going our separate ways. Despite 5 calls before the day, the promised seating area was not arranged. Our guests joined a buffet queue at 9.30am and by 10.30 many were still in the queue waiting on basics like cutlery and food (essential to a buffet). Staff were mostly rude. When asked why it was so slow and no food - no excuses. On leaving we reported all of the above to reception. I wasn't the only one and many were saying the same. Attitude was again dismissive. In summary - unless you really to or you are a crossroads fanatic - don't stay here. Did bring this to the attention of their head office when surveyed - and apparently it is being investigated. As of now - no response!

    « Excellent hotel - definitely worth a visit »

From the out side it could be anywhere but inside it is absolutely stunning. The staff are helpful and friendly but nothing to write home about. The rooms, a double, was spacious and comfortable with a comfy bed and large wardrobe. If you can get a room with a view - it is stunning, a metaphor for the Essex county side. Breakfast was lovely and the location was brilliant less than a minute drive from the zoo and the city itself. I would definitely recommend a visit.

    « Very comfortable stay. »

Stayed for a couple of nights in August 2017. The hotel had wedding parties both (days and) nights, yet despite being fairly busy with the functions, we cannot find fault with the location, accommodation, staff, or food. Drink was a tad expensive, but then when you live in Spain...British prices do seem a little high. Staff were great...very friendly and informative. Food was very good. We ate at night in the restaurant and also had breakfast: good sized portions well presented and served in the evening, and a hearty (buffet style) breakfast. And for this, the price was very reasonable indeed. Would be happy to recommend the Best Western Marks Tey Hotel. Will use again if in the area.

    « Wedding »

Myself and my now husband, had our wedding at this hotel on 26th August 2017. The day was perfect, the staff were fantastic, nothing was too much for them. All of them all had smiles and were so helpful from the start to finish. The food was amazing, the DJ Sean was brilliant, the dance floor always had people on it the entire evening. Sharon made everything so easy for us whilst booking the venue and going through all the details of the day. On the day Dinesh was running everything and it went so smoothly. We do feel the need to say a special Thank you to Beth, she was there from the day before the wedding until the day after. She was AMAZING! Literally nothing was too much trouble, checking to see if we were okay, if we needed anything, she was truly fantastic and worked so hard! We are so happy we had our wedding here as the whole day was amazing. Thank you guys so much for everything. Mr & Mrs Scott

« Good value but turning money away. »

We stayed here on the 15 th July ( a Saturday )for a wedding in Colchester. Our overall experience was good. The room was a good size , immaculately clean as was the well equipped bathroom. The main areas were fresh, bright and comfortable, a little clinical. Our ground floor room was quiet and well ventilated. The reception staff were helpful, genuinely cheerful and efficient, a rare and precious commodity in the hospitality business .We had arrived 2 hours early expecting to drop off our bags but our room was thankfully ready. The hotel appeared full as there were other weddings happening in the area. Breakfast was adequate, let down by the provision of lurid squash rather than juice. We paid around £90 including breakfast which represented good value I think. But here's the strange thing.Three of us returned a bit earlier than some of our group for a nightcap. This was around 10pm. We sat down in the bar area from which you see the drive into the main entrance. Taxis started arriving bringing guests back from various weddings and the three bar staff swung into furious action closing up the bar , switching off lights, pulling the shutters down etc. This strikes me as crazy. The hotel is out on its own with a captive audience willing to spend some serious money in the bar at 10 pm and they close ! Best Western you're missing a trick. I'm sure most of the guests were like us, just wanting a night cap and spend a little more money. Of course there are issues with guests from time to time , but that's the hospitality business for you !

    « Sadly, very disapointed. »

We arrived as a party of 13 celebrating a 50th birthday for afternoon tea. We were shown to our table & an assortment of teas were bought to our table. I asked for a coffee , as I don't drink tea which was also bought. Our 'starters' were brought out which included fish & a fruit cocktail. for me as due to an allergy I couldn't have fish. Our afternoon teas were bought out also a fish free tier for me (as requested before hand) One of our party was also gluten free (also requested & hotel advised of before) When my friend enquired about her 'Gluten Free' afternoon tea the waitress looked shocked & said they didn't know about it! She disappeared and come back ( much later) with a teaplate consisting of 3 finger sandwiches, 2 cake bars & a jam tart! It simply looked as though someone had driven to the local Sainsburys up the road, bought a few bits from the GF range & chucked it on a plate & bought it out to my friend! No scones, jam or cream were included. Awful presentation. The afternoon tea was yummy, although the cream slice & fresh stawberry tart literally collapsed as soon as you picked them up, they were very tasty. We had a mini fruit trifle afterwards too. I found the staff very quiet but polite. The hotel overall is very tired looking but clean as were the toilets ( although BOTH hand dryers appeared not to be working) There also appeared to be a 'Musty' smell in the main bar area of the hotel & the chairs looked very tired & old also. I noticed upon leaving the coffee/tea machine also offered other coffees, latte etc BUT these were not offered to me when I asked for a coffee! On settling our bill we asked for the make shift Gluten Free afternoon tea to be taken off...which it was. I have had many afternoon teas in various places & I am sorry to say that I would not have one here. again.

    « STAY AWAY »

Went to a wedding fair there earlier this year and was told by one of their staff specifically where to park. And i got a parking ticket!-argued it with them and was assured they would drop the fines especially as everyone who went got fined! Fast forward to now, ive had endless communications and promises from their general manager Efran that it'll be sorted out, fines increases over time and now they've just decided they're not going to do anything and "don't care if it looses us customers" tomorrow I'll be contacting newspapers and hitting hard on social media! HORRIBLE STAFF- MANAGEMENT IS AWFUL AND I wouldn't stay there if someone paid me!!!!

Pleasant hotel clean rooms but hot and needed the fan on all night to get any sleep. Food was good with a choice at dinner & a wide selection @ breakfast.Drinks in the bar reasonably priced for a hotel, also out group had 20 percent of wine

    « Afternoon Tea »

We visited for a birthday on Friday 11th, and were not overly satisfied. We had previously asked for 2 vegetarian, when the starters arrived there was fish, however they did bring out 3 fruit cocktail starters instead for us. The lady then explained the teas and they were all these different flavours which all tasted strange and not particularly nice... they then brought the main tiers out which all looked lovely, the sandwiches were nice (vegetarian was egg mayo, cheese and tomato and cucumber) however they do not give you more, so it was around 2/3 sandwiches each which is not much. The cakes were banoffee pie, chocolate eclair, a cream slice and a strawberry tart, all of the pastry on each was soggy and you could barely pick them up.. but nonetheless nice enough once we'd scraped them off the plates. With 2 big scones at the top. We then had a dessert of a little mini trifle which was nice. Slightly disappointed in the lack of cake and also slightly annoyed that when we left we realised they had charged us the standard £11.50 for a children's one too. We felt this is a lot for a child considering they don't drink tea and didn't eat the starters or fish sandwiches.

This hotel badly needs an update to a more contemporary style. Fitness centre staff very helpful but standard of changing rooms reminds me of old type changing rooms at school. Hairdryers not working and very old type of hairdryer in room.

« Good for our stay »

Only stayed for one night , for a local family do in Colchester .Didn't do much in the hotel other than sleep have breakfast and a few drinks in the bar. Room was nice size , on the first floor with a comfortable bed and clean bathroom . Room overlooked the rear of the hotel and was quiet. Bar prices were reasonable for a hotel with a good choice of beer.Booked room only , but decided to have breakfast before leaving.Paid at reception and for £10 each thought it was good value .Spacious eating area and good buffet choice . Deserving of special mention was Alison on reception . She allocated us a room so that our relatives who hadn't arrived could have an adjacent room .She was very friendly and professional a definite credit to Best Western.Only slight criticism was the hotel seemed very warm in all areas , in the bedroom we had the window open and the fan running all night. In conclusion I would defiantly stay at the hotel again and maybe next time try some of the things missed this time.

    « Last minute stay »

Booked this hotel only about 4hrs before arriving due to a last minute change in plans. Arrived before the official check in time but my room was ready, upgraded as I'm a Rewards member. The room was spacious and cool, which was nice as it was very warm outside. Decent size bathroom and the lounge area had a table and two chairs at the window. The view was of the car park though, but don't know if there would be any better views due to the location of the hotel. I didn't eat in the restaurant during my stay but did have a sandwich in the bar which was very nice. The only problem I had was the noise from the traffic in the morning. I had to get up at 7am but was unable to sleep after about 05:30 both mornings. When I checked out the receptionist did ask if everything had been ok with my stay. When I said I'd had trouble sleeping but didn't think the road my room was facing would have been that busy she just said that will be from the A12 behind the hotel. Perhaps they could update the rooms with secondary/internal double glazing

We booked here for one night for my sisters wedding. We arrived at midday and they managed to have a room ready early for us. The rooms are ok but I think a bit dated. Need upgrading. Reasonable price for one night. Didn't have breakfast

    « Wedding stay »

I recently visited here while attending a wedding at the hotel. We stayed for two nights. The beds were very comfortable and the rooms were clean enough to. The breakfast was lovely both days with a buffet fry up and continental options to. The staff were friendly and helpful however when informing reception that one of the TV's in the suite did not work we were told someone would come and repair it ready for our second night however nobody came, considering the price paid for the room we did expect everything in the room to be in working order. When trying to book my room over the phone, it took 5 different calls and being put on hold for long periods of time which racked up quite a phone bill! I'm still unsure as to why it was so difficult to reserve a room. Overall the hotel is nice with good leisure facilities and the wedding was organised to perfection and the food served was of very good quality.

    « Adequate »

This is a tired hotel. The paint on the fascia outside is peeling and that is pretty much mirrored throughout. The rooms are adequate size, have most things you need inside them. Décor is very much tied to the 1980s/90s. Bathroom seems dirty but that could just be the lighting, there is also a smell of mould from the shower curtain. Breakfast was plentiful but the quality was not great.

    « Afternoon Tea - Great Price »

4 of us visited here for afternoon tea and we were all impressed by the great value if is. There are 6 different teas to choose from including Walnut and chocolate, Amaretto and cherry, we then received a starter of prawn, crayfish and salmon cocktail served on a spoon. The tea tray followed with a selection of sandwiches (egg, salmon/cream cheese, cucumber, cheese and tomato) cakes (strawberry tart, chocolate eclair, banoffee tart and cream slice) and scones with jam and clotted cream. When this was all finished we then received a dessert of trifle, water was plentiful for tea and we were not rushed in anyway. This was all for the fantastic price of £11.50 each.

    « Overnight stay »

The hotel was clean and the rooms were good, The beds were particularly comfortable. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, and for the price we paid for the room very good value. Breakfast was not included in the room price but was available at an additional cost, which was good with wide selection.

This place is beyond very grubby the water dispenser in the pool area has green algae in the drip tray 2 days on the trot just not cleaned! staff on there mobile phones not working! Poor poor show, and the whole place needs to be refurbish! staff need training! get yourself a manager that can change things! breakfast consisted of a poor sausage stewed bacon under cooked! the rest just ok! has not changed since my last review!

« Lovingly maintained older property with fantastic service »

Overall, no major complaints on a one night stay, hotel is ca. 45 years old and in very good condition, clean and well maintained. If you are looking for something new and shiny give this place a pass. Service was fantastic, a request for an iron had someone at my door two minutes later. Super deal on 3 course meal, service and food quality was good. Breakfast buffet the next morning was without a flaw. Bathroom had bright lighting and plenty of towels. Had a room on the backside so somewhat of a view and lots of bunny rabbits hopping around in the grass. Only disappointment was I had booked an Executive Room and the workspace was not very good nor was there a proper chair, great for doing make-up though. Photo submitted.

« Relaxing, Great Customer Service »

I booked the Best Western Marks Tey for a break for my wife and I to "just get away" for a weekend but not having to travel far. We booked on the Best Western web site a 2 night stay with afternoon tea. The afternoon tea was on the day of arrival. Knowing that we were arriving late we phoned ahead and asked if it could be moved to the second day. The hotel were happy to make the change without any fuss. On arrival the receptionist was friendly and informative. Our room was comfortable, decorated and furnished in a traditional style. The rooms were very clean, the TV was on the small side with limited channels. The restaurant is well located and decorated ( the tables had white linen, and not a work canteen type affair), The English breakfast is a buffet and is better than most breakfast buffets. The afternoon tea was very enjoyable and the evening meal of our first night was very good. The staff in the restaurant were attentive, very friendly and approachable. We made good use of the leisure facilitates that are in a modern building next to the sleeping accommodation. There is a small gym, an indoor pool, steam room and sauna. The hotel provided towels. Although the hotel was busy the leisure facilities were quiet so we almost had the place to ourselves On our second night we drove into Colchester for our evening meal. Colchester has a great range of restaurants and bars, most of the chains and a number of smaller independents. We opted for a small family run Italian. My wife booked herself a couple of treatments in the onsite spa, which she was happy with. The Best Western Marks Tey provides very good value for money for a relaxing break, We would definitely visit again for a weekend break.

« OK but no thrills »

Positives: - decent breakfast - lovely reception staff - clean - easy to find - the hotel respected my request to locate us in a quiet and accessible room Negatives: - feels like a 2/3 star hotel (was supposed to be a 4, god knows how) - our room was beyond dated, the deco has not been probably changed since The Dynasty was on TV - we were given one tiny bottle of a shower gel and one shampoo for 3 people. No body lotion, no hair conditioner but equally, no shower gel either. - there was a huge hole in the cot we were given - 4 stars? Really? - seriously overpriced for what it is - it does look a bit like a truck stop as someone said either l, I am afraid - there is a disco ball in the breakfast room that magically transforms into a function room in the evening Having said that, I had a pleasant stay and a good night sleep despite a wedding and a birthday taking place in the building. I just wish my room was prettier or the star rating/ price reflected the reality.

« Pleasant hotel. Needs updating. »

I have enjoyed my stays at the hotel. I have been here for 2 weeks whilst waiting to move into my new home. Positives: * The rooms are decorated with hardwood furniture with plenty of storage. The furniture is solidly built and the beds are comfortable. The AC was not working but fans were provided in the rooms so I was comfortable and not at all overheated even during the hottest days since 1995 (apparently). * The housekeeping is very good. Everyday the room was cleaned to a decent standard with fresh towels and linen. * The restaurant is good and reasonably priced. They have a 3 course meal offer with 2 drinks for £25 a head and the food was great. It was well portioned and I felt like I had my moneys worth * Free wi-fi for guests. * There are on site spa facilities which my wife and I took advantage of. The treatments were good value. * The staff are friendly and I have felt welcomed at all times. Negatives: The technology in the rooms needs updating, if you don't intend on spending much of your time in the room then this won't matter but otherwise, * They have satellite television but most of the channels don't work. I think it needs realigning to be honest. * The TV in the room is very small by modern standards and it does not support HDMI. So don't expect to plug in your firestick or any devices. * This is all good if you only watch BBC1-Channel 4 but those of us with Amazon or Netflix are out of luck - Especially since the Wi-FI connection can be a bit slow at peak times.

    « Disgusting »

Treated like a child by the receptionist (small uncouth lady) Noises all day long (worked nights) Breakfast was cold (was one of the first in) Staff would rather eat food hiding behind a coffee machine than serve guests..!!! Food was never right, Over the 4 nights I stayed Each night the food was either done wrong (allergies:-cheese tomatoes) were placed on my sandwich, Wrong bread used (always brown) And the best excuse was that the sandwich was misplaced.. Sadly the manager offered a free night with my family..? (I live in manchester 10-11 hr round trip, I turned it down, they never got back in touch) Absolutely appalled by this place, the time before when I had to stay here, there was a wedding on and when I rang down to complain about the children running up and down the corridor the reception said "well it's a wedding want Di you want us to do Avoid at all costs

« Hotel and Spa? More like truck stop »

Over priced and low quality. We checked in and were told the room we paid for was full booked so we were down graded. We went for dinner and it was over priced and poor better food in your chain hotels. The breakfast for £10 per person was awful for £10 you could go to a cafe and get a fresh cooked breakfast not a soggy, stale and cold buffet. The rooms are out dated and in need of repair. Unfriendly staff, apart from the Asian lady she was ace. Would not recommend for the money.

    « OK but dated »

The hotel was easy to find being just off the westbound carriageway of the A12 and is a large building maybe built in the late 70's or early 80's. In it's day this was probably a luxurious place to stay, there is a rather grand lobby area which leads to a decent bar and a large imposing staircase leading up to the first floor rooms. So, first impressions are rather good. The rooms themselves are of a good size with all the usual amenities plus a small table with two comfortable armchairs. The TV is quite small and a bit out of date and was positioned in a corner of the room opposite the bed, an odd location but not too off-putting. The bathroom is a good size but the shower is one of those over a bath and the bath itself is quite high-sided so not the easiest to clamber in an out of. There were soaps and washing gels provided and the towels were nice and soft. However, the aforementioned TV didn't work in the room we were allocated and it was only after the third request that somebody arrived to have a look at it. It was faulty and so we were given a new room within a matter of minutes with no fuss. However, whilst our new room had a functioning TV it also had a large table mounted fan, something our previous room did not have. We were told that they didn't have enough fans for all the rooms. It was a hot sweaty night and the fan was a godsend (no aircon), goodness knows what our night would have been like in our first room! So, it's an OK hotel that is showing it's age and probably could do with modernising. It's by no means a bad place to spend a night but, with other options available nearby, it could be better.

« Good hotel but issues with security and slipping standards »

Stayed at the Best Western Marks Tey 4 nights 12th thro' 15th June 2017 as a member of a Coach Party. Hotel is 6 miles south-west of Colchester adjacent to the A12. Rooms at the rear of the hotel experience constant road noise. Impossible to sleep with windows open. Ground to the rear is grassed/wooded and beloved by rabbits. Hotel has an annex with fitness suite and a small pool. Public Areas are clean and well maintained. Staff are friendly Reception is short on signage, room locations etc not apparent. Bar is comfortable with typical hotel prices. No evening entertainment and nothing of interest within walking distance. Complimentary Wifi is available Room;- Clean and fresh with tea, coffee etc, other facilities on request. Wall mounted TV too small. Wooden furnishings, good quality in their day now distressed. Unit tops would have been glass on green/gold leather. Only one top intact, one missing both leather and glass. Built-in Wardrobe (no doors) takes space from the en-suite. The wardrobe is in effect a hole in the wall with wooden surround. En- suite has usual facilities with shower over bath. Bed was comfortable and room had 2 easy chairs. Housekeeping was good Security:- poor! No safe in standard rooms, PVC window latch mechanism faulty and poorly maintained. Restaurant:- Nicely furnished and comfortable, food quality variable. Service, slow at times. Pared down menu for coach tourists so some missing items, Starters and sweets, generally good. Main course meat dishes, disappointing. Buffet style breakfast, missing cornflakes/porridge/kippers but otherwise OK.

    « Afternoon tea »

A surprise booking, my two daughters took me here for a treat. It was lovely, a tray of flavoured teas, coffee could be ordered and hot water supplied and refreshed three times. The food was lovely, Sandwiches, fresh cream cakes, scones with jam and clotted cream and trifle, way too much for us to eat. The staff were attentive and helpful, checking on us regularly, and clearing away our mess without fuss. Very reasonable at around £11 per head, but also relaxing and very English!!!

« Tired hotel with no air conditioning »

We stayed here for 2 nights and this was advertised as a "4 star" hotel. Sadly this is a very generous rating for this hotel. The whole place felt tired and in need of renovation. The rooms were very average and £90/night was a lot for what was provided. The nights were pretty warm and for a 4 star hotel, I would expect air conditioning to be standard. In addition there were very few toiletries supplied and we were only provided with 1 small shower gel between us. On the plus side, the staff were very helpful, the bath & shower were very good, the breakfast was pretty reasonable and the parking was plentiful. Overall this place needs an overhaul and it potentially could be a very nice place to stay.

    « PLEASANT STAY »

Nice room with a very comfortable bed!!!! One thing on the downside was there was no separate shower in my bathroom. Apparently all rooms have a bath with overhead shower unless one is disabled. Shame I wasn't informed of this when I booked! Only two rooms throughout the hotel have facility's for the disabled i.e. a wet room. Apart from that I found the staff very pleasant, helpful and amiable.Particularly the lady behind the bar ....I believe her name was Tina.~ Thanks Tina for all your help....bless you! I would however recommend staying here as I found it was fairly quiet and all in all a good hotel.

    2
« Tired rooms and hopeless staff »

The room was clean but the hotel overall is looking shabby with very dated decor. The staff were disinterested and not very helpful. We had booked online before going and then were told when we arrived there was no room for us. After a long wait we were grudgingly told they'd found a room for us. It was particularly annoying as the hotel was clearly half empty.

    « Wedding Reception »

Myself and my partner attended a wedding reception here on Saturday evening. We booked a room on a bed and breakfast basis to save on the hassle of making our way home and to make the weekend even more special. On arrival there was plenty of parking available and the helpful receptionist made sure we I putted our car. registration into the system to prevent getting a ticket. Check in was easy and reception was very pleasant. Our room was spacious and clean and very comfortable. Tea and coffee facilities were available in the room. The main bar downstairs was comfortable and the lady behind the bar was friendly and polite. Decor was pleasant and there was plenty of seating available. The wedding reception was amazing. Great DJ. Lovely buffet. A good size room with a good sized dance floor to throw yourself around (I did) and plenty of staff available. Chocolate fountain was fabulous. A great night to remember for a long time. The next morning at breakfast, was really pleased with the choice of breakfast buffet available. Everything was well presented, hot and tasty. Again, plenty of helpful staff around to assist. Would definitely recommend this hotel for a stay over and for that special function.

    « Perfect wedding!!!! »

We had our wedding ceremony and meal here and Sharon was amazing from start to finish in organising everything and the team on the day we're all wonderful. Attending to all our needs and they all made our wedding just the perfect day. We really could not have wished for anymore. All our guests stayed here overnight and had a wonderful breakfast all together in the morning. From the initial contact with Sharon to when we checked out the day after our wedding it was absolutely perfect and we highly recommend anyone who is looking at this venue for a wedding, you will not be disappointed. Such a perfect day!!! A massive thank you to everyone here and who was involved. You were all amazing.

    « Afternoon tea »

Had been really looking forward to this but this was a real disappointment! Many problems from ice crystals in sandwiches, to rock solid scones, dinning set chipped, and unknown cake variety with off taste. Few staff and many were very scruffy and inappropriately dressed non existent skirts and large holes in tights scruffy unwashed hair to top it off wiping nose on hand numerous times they used foul language in front of guests moaning about the dress code and wanting to assault another member of staff as they were aloud a blazer to wear totally unprofessional!! One worker turned up on shift then walked in grabbed a bucket and began washing there car!!!!!! Complaint to manager who was less than helpfull! A 4* hotel, I think not somebody really needs to reconsider the rating.

« Comfortable, good service, good facilities »

We chose this hotel as we had stayed before. The staff were very accommodating, changing our room with no fuss to the quieter side. There is some road noise from the A12, which disappears on the quieter side. The breakfasts were fine, with requests for veggie sausages and poached eggs happily provided. The pool, steam room and sauna were quiet and open for long hours. The tennis courts could do with refurbishment but we still had a decent hour on there. All in all the hotel is comfortable, the staff excellent, food fine (we also had an evening meal), and we will certainly stay there next time we head to East Anglia. We booked via Superbreak, gave us a really good price and included an afternoon tea, which was rather wonderful !

Room was a little tired and noisy (104), the walls were exceptionally thin. The staff were great. The room was clean and warm. The car park was a little strange in that they employ an outside subcontractor to 'police' the area, make sure you register your car as soon as you arrive.

« Bit tired looking, but staff very good »

Stayed for 4 nights in April. Bedrooms bit tired and dated, but clean and comfortable. Tea, coffee and milk in good supply in the room includes decaf. Food - breakfast extremely good with many choices, evening meal Ok, but limited choice for the group I was with. Drinks in the bar a bit dear but that's to be expected. The staff are the mainstay of this hotel , very helpful, friendly and obliging. Nothing too much trouble, refilling the breakfast containers as soon as they possibly can, keeping diners informed when an item, like the croissants had arrived. all credit to them. Hotel situated in a nice area, it was good to walk out locally as the evenings were nice and warm. Friends said the swimming pool was very good.Recommended

Used as a base camp while visiting Colchester zoo which is only 4 miles away. We really enjoyed our afternoon tea and the staff were very attentive. Our room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was very good. Staff throughout the hotel were helpful and polite Hotel had a lovely pool which seemed very popular. Bar food was disappointing (we ordered sandwiches and the bread was so thin it could have been a Tesco thin slice loaf) not what we were expecting, however maybe we were just unlucky! Would definitely go back when next in the area.

The rooms were comfortable and clean with free wifi. Would recommend this hotel and would stay here again.

« Passable Hotel, but needs modernising and noisy. »

An overnight stay while visiting relatives nearby. Reception service was below par, and we did not feel that welcome. The receptionist that served us did not seem happy and even pointed to the room number instead of simply saying ?here are your keys, room 123 sir'. A stark contrast to where we stayed the night before. When entering the room it was very hot due to the sun beaming through the windows. Curtains on south facing rooms on hot days should really be pulled closed. It was very noisy when the window was open. In fact the room was quite noisy with the window closed. This constant thrum coming from the A12 and an extractor fan somewhere on the building that ran all night. The room was clean though and had everything we needed for a quick stay. The general condition of the hotel was clean, well maintained but in need of a refurb. We thought £10extra for breakfast was steep considering the room was already £70+. So we went to the highly recommended Bungalow Diner a short walk up the road. A noisy but clean roof over our heads. Thankfully only for a night.

    « 1 night stay £100 for parking fine »

I was booked 1 nights stay through work. Filled in the tablet at reception for my vehicle registration. 1 month later I have received a parking fine for £100. The times given for the fine I was at work. Now I have to gather evidence too support this. I have better things to be doing with my spare time. Also no "welcome" when I arrived just "have you got your details" straight away. 10 minutes up the road is a Holiday express. They where lovely and always said hello and welcome. After a long day or drive this nice welcoming goes a long way. You won't get this at Marks tey hotel.

    « Afternoon Tea »

This is a hidden gem, the afternoon tea was outstanding and certainly under priced. We had tea for 7, 5 adults & 2 children and there was plenty of food, which included sandwiches and cakes with a lovely scone, we had a choice of 6 loose leaf teas, delicious and choices of other tea bagged tea. It was not rushed and we had a great time enjoying the tea and the company.

    « Parking issues »

My wife and I have been going to the Marks Tey hotel for years to the events evenings and parties. Great Nights and we would book a room. We often pop in for a Bar meal with our Sons and grandchildren. Now they have decide that booking you car in at reception for just an evening meal is a great way of upsetting customers. Now you can get a £100 fine for a Bar meal like we did. How clever is that. The whole family will never go back again.

    « Average hotel »

My fiancee and I came to Colchester for a two night stay, to visit her nephew who is in the army. First impressions are indeed of the Crossroads Motel! It looks and feels dated, I would rate it a 3 star personally, we didn't use the pool and gym so can't comment on that. On arrival we went for a drink at the bar, freezing cold in there! Most people kept their coats on, or buggered off elsewhere to find warmth! Prices reasonable though. The room was ok, heated towel rail and bathroom extractor fan both kaput, no air conditioning (something to consider if you're visiting in summer). The bed was fairly comfortable. I don't want to be too negative, the staff are, without exception, friendly and helpful. Also the breakfast was spot on. To sum up, if you get a decent room rate, then this is an acceptable, average hotel to stay at, just don't expect 4 star standards everywhere. Colchester by the way is a lovely town, great shopping, Xmas market on Saturday, highly recommended.

« Thumbs up but needs a spruce up. »

Just got back from an overnight stay here. Have to echo most of the recent reviews, staff helpful and friendly, clean hotel with visible cleaners, comfy beds, nice swimming pool, steam room and sauna but the room we stayed in could do with updating - just a bit dated. From the looks of it some rooms have been done so at the moment probably hit and miss on the room. Apart from this, all good and would stay again.

    « Disappointing »

Stayed one night early November. First thoughts were the hotel looks like crossroads motel from the outside! Paid extra for an executive double. You get water and one towelling robe for the extra money!? Room very dated and depressing, although the bed was very comfy and the shower very powerful. Breakfast perfectly adequate. Did not use the pool. I hope they upgrade all their rooms very soon. New carpet was being laid in corridor and stairs as we arrived. Couldn't was it to leave I'm afraid.

    « Needs a bit of TLC »

Stayed for a couple of nights in October and although the Leisure facilities were fantastic the actual bedroom could do with a revamp (threadbare carpets, screw holes in the walls and soggy mattress). Stopped on business and was upgraded. Room was spotlessly clean even though it needs updating. Comfy bed powerful shower. Ate in the bar and the food was good quality and the service was good. The hotel is now showing wear and tear and is need of money spent on it and in need of modernisation. I would happily return on business but not on a leisure stay.

« Wonderful Staff, Spacious Rooms but.... »

I stayed in this hotel for over 3 months every week from July to October 2016. I stayed in both standard and executive rooms and tried out much of what this hotel has to offer at a competitive rate. First the good points. Above all else the fabulous staff. From the super efficient breakfast front-of house supremo Clair, to the glamorous and knowledgeable reception staff - too many to mention the staff crewed an elderly and leaky ship from morning to morning with a cheerful demeanour. The rooms are spacious. Which after the standard Premier Inn rabbit hutch is very nice. The furniture is old-fashioned which I like, but there again everything about this hotel is old-fashioned, which when it comes to the plumbing and heating is not a great asset. But rooms do have a full size bath which is a great asset. It has a swimming pool. Yes an old-fashioned (of course) heated pool and small gym which is free to use when you stay. So most mornings I swam and it did me good. It also has a spa, which I didnt try, and a large restaurant which provides wholesome food at reasonable prices. Now the not great things. The hotel suffers from an unbelievable lack of capital investment. The rooms needed a facelift 20 years ago. Now they are desperate, with crazed washhand basins broken wardrobe doors, ancient light fittings, worn carpets, creaky furniture and wonky electrical sockets. In the public areas the wear and tear is even more visible with tired wallpaper and threadbare carpets mended with duct tape. Not good. On a couple of occasions the domestic hot water failed entirely and on enquiry with the engineers it appears that one of the boilers has been cannibalised to repair the second. The second is long life-expired and when it fails (inevitably) the whole hotel is without hot water. The hotel owners should hang their heads in shame. Hot water is a life blood of a hotel, and the investment to replace hot water boilers is very modest. A rolling refurbishment programme is very very overdue. Start in the plant rooms is my advice. Having said all that I loved the place despite its shortcomings and would, well probably would, return

    « a lovely hotel & a bed that was so comfortable! »

we used this hotel to base ourselfs for a couple of days in colchester & the zoo... booked 2 rooms for myself & children & my mum ... both rooms clean & presented really nicely. they were both a nice size and clean! the beds were soo soooo comfortable too. there is not a lot in marks tey but the hotel do sell food & drinks services. the in room coffee was horrid , but again .. thats a minor thing & they do sell their own coffees/hot chocolates on site ... this hotel is only 20mins from colchester too , we enjoyed our stay here & we would definatly come back to stay again! the breakfast was lovely & lots of selections of hot foods & cereals/fruit /yogurts / fruit juices

    « GB tours trip »

We travel regularly with GB tours, they are reasonably priced so we don't expect top class hotels. We found the staff friendly and obliging. Our room which was on the ground floor close to reception was quiet and comfortable. There was plenty of storage space and a good shower. It was beautifully clean. Breakfast was excellent. Being on a tour we have a restricted evening menu which was adequate and well cooked. The decor generally is a bit tired.

« Good place to stay in essex »

Stayed here to visit frinton and Walton and then to go to Chelmsford so in between the two. Treated ourselves to a massage which was lovely also had a swim in the pool. Plenty of choice for breakfast with no rush. Staff were all friendly and helpful.

« Very dated and tired »

The sheets and the room were clean, but the hotel is very dated and the room carpet was thread bare! The towels were put on the suitcase rack so were not very clean! The "best" western it is not! We won't be back

« Afternoon tea spa day »

I visited yesterday with some friends for the afternoon tea. The registration was fairly quick and was offered menu of free soft drinks which set the day off nicely. I forgot to take a dressing gown, I was offered to rent a dressing gown non refundable for £10. I personally thought this was very expensive especially as you didn't get your money back. We spent some time by the pool expecting that they'd be places to sit/lye down. The pool was freezing, which has such a shame as we didn't want to spend time in the pool for long. Half the swimming pool was out of use as there was swimming lesson going on. The sauna was really nice but the steam room was out of use, again a bit of a let down. The changing rooms were clean and tidy, but we wasn't informed prior to the spa day at you need a padlock for the lockers, luckily a friend had one in her gym bag. The treatment was really relaxing and the food was delicious.

« Friendly staff, good breakfast »

As mentioned in other reviews the rooms are looking a bit tired and could do with a refresh however they were clean and comfortable and efficientlt serviced each day. The staff are all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast is plentiful well cooked and with excellent fresh fruit. We didn't use the pool or restaurant in the evenings so can't comment on those. Thanks for an enjoyable 4 night stay.

« I always enjoy my stay here »

I have a lot of friends that live in Essex so I'm often up in Colchester. I have stayed here at least 5 times and it's always my first choice. Location is so convenient, literally just off the A12. Only a 10/15 minute drive into Colchester town centre. The car park is free, although remember to register your details on the iPad at reception, as they are now monitoring the car park. Apparently commuters were using the hotel car park to hop on the train, and this hotel gets very busy in the week due to conferences and business meetings. The furnishings are very plush; I'm sure some would say the rooms are very dated, but I actually like that. It reminds me of the comfort I experienced when I stayed in lots of Stakis hotels when I was a child. The beds are one of the most comfortable beds I have slept in in a hotel, and the rooms are always a good size. The pool is nice, not very large, but enough for a swim, and there is a gym to work out in as well. Only thing with the leisure centre now is the lockers are no longer locked with a £1 coin, it has changed to a padlock system. Obviously as a hotel guest I didn't know and I didn't bring a padlock, so that's a slight niggle that may raise a few issues with other guests. The beauty salon is nice here too. When I stayed here a few months back, I had a lovely back massage. Highly recommend the lovely ladies at Aimez-Vous! I'm certain I will continue to stay here in the future.

« It was far from 'Fabulous' »

My five friends and I paid almost £35 each in advance for a comedy evening with 3-course meal on 30th September, and although we had a nice time there were several issues with the food and service. Even before we went into the dining room we'd discovered there was no cream on the premises (for coffees). Service during the meal was extremely slow and although we accepted the fact a couple of coach loads of people had turned up, there were only 26 of us in total in the room, and all the meals had been pre-booked, so they'd had more than enough time to prepare. One of our party chose the pate, but there was far too much of it for the extremely small amount of toast on the plate, so most of it was left uneaten. The rest of us had ordered blue cheese & pear salad with walnuts. None of the salads had any walnuts and the pear slices were so hard we all struggled to cut them with our knives. I ended up leaving most of mine. Four of us ordered the veggie curry for main, and it was so spicy that we all struggled (one of our party simply couldn't eat hers). My lips were still tingling 10 minutes later! Even though all the meals were pre-ordered, only 5 of our 6 mains arrived. After having to prove she'd ordered and paid, one of our party then had to wait another 10 minutes for her meal to appear (by which time we'd all finished eating). After we'd finished with the curries we realised the naan breads with mango chutney, which were on the original menus, never arrived, so we queried it (with two different staff members). Instead of asking if we'd like cheese & crackers after our meal or a bottle of wine in lieu if the missing naans, we were given the warmed up breads well after our curry plates had been taken away - leaving us bemused that we were expected to sit there dipping naan into chutney as some sort of bizarre additional course. I'm not entirely sure whether the people on the other two tables, who'd also missed out on naans they'd paid for, were offered any as I didn't see any more brought out from the kitchen. Eventually, out desserts came out, 6 peach cheesecakes. No major issues there (although cream would've been nicer than ice cream). This was followed by coffees/teas and a chocolate mint. Throughout the meal we were entertained by three actresses dressed as the main characters of the TV show Absolutely Fabulous. They were quite funny, although it's not ideal to be interacting with diners while they're eating and it clearly wasn't easy to play to such a small crowd, however, they did their best. On the plus side the toilets were immaculate. Not once did anyone ask if our food was ok or whether we'd like our water jugs refilled. I have to say that I'm very disappointed by the whole experience, especially as I'd enjoyed a fantastic afternoon tea there in July, and I won't be returning.

« Excellent hotel, staff and food »

Myself and my partner stayed with out 15 month old daughter at the weekend. I must admit after reading some reviews on T.A I was a little apprehensive. I need entry have been. We had a lovely double room with travel cot (also with bedding provided and made up despite taking our own). Lovely and clean and as you'd expect a 4* hotel to be. Very helpful reception staff who couldn't do enough for us and offered 24 hour assistance from reception if we needed anything as we were there with a little one. They stored our little girls milk in the fridge for us no problem. Awesome breakfast, lots to choose from and lovely and fresh/great quality food. Again very nice and helpful staff. Room service evening meal faultless and meal made up for our little one as requested not as per the menu as such. We requested mash and veg instead of chips with the child's meal. High chair brought up to our room. Ice for drinks etc. Very close proximity to Colchester zoo. Absolutely brilliant. Nice smallish pool for a quick dip. We had an excellent stay and would highly recommend.

« Nice to be back »

From time you walk in the staff are so polite and friendly, even the basic double room i booked was clean and relaxing, The bar as ample space to relaxe and room to wacth the large TV. The breakfast room is spacious, and the food hot and plenty and able to go refill as much as you require.

    « Tired furnishings »

Having read other TA reviews about this hotel I expected to find a few things not to my liking but for a Best Western chain hotel this is the worst I have ever stayed in with regard to room conditions: the pictures tell it all! Pluses: very helpful and friendly staff, good breakfast range, lovely pool, sauna and steam room (though somewhat small), spotless bathroom. They offer a number of packages in terms of weddings, Murder mystery weekends, Christmas and New Year functions, plus dinner/dances with Irie J (whoever he may be). We stayed for a wedding in the area and the hotel was fully booked so it must be popular but the hotel should not just rely on that: review after review keep saying the same thing but the critique seems to be being ignored. Invest in new carpets or floor boards, new chests and wardrobe doors. Just because your customer demographic may be the older generation does not mean your rooms should be old and tired!

    « Reasonable hotel »

The bedroom was tired and dated although comfortable. Evening meal was delicious and I was reassured that my selections were gluten free. Standard Best Western breakfast with availability of gluten free toast. Staff were attentive polite and knowledgeable. Overall a good stay for business reasons. I think perhaps Best Western should update the decor and furnishings then this would be excellent

    « Group booking »

The hotel is a little tired and in need of updating, especially the bedrooms. We were a large party of walkers and the staff at Mark Tey could not have been more helpful with all our needs. A good selection of breakfast was available. The Essex Way Is nearby for walks along the beautiful countryside .

« Not enough attention to detail »

I've just got back from staying here. My initial impressions were good from the reception area but the rooms just don't meet the standard. There were stains on the walls and when I looked, the bed sheet didn't reach the bottom of the bed so I had been rolling my feet around on something shared by countless other guests if they had also been provided with a bed where there are a few inches at the bottom not covered by a sheet! I could also hear every time the people in the room next door used the hairdryer or a switch or the tv! That said breakfast was good with lots of choice. Upon check out they didn't even ask how my stay was. It's okay for one night if you are travelling like I was but longer term I would personally look elsewhere.

« Best night of my life »

Where do I begin, it was just beautiful from start to finish. My husband and I fell back in love all over again. #honeymoon #us #love Big hats off to whoever picked that carpet, it looked absolutely divine. If the hotel manager knows of where I can buy this it would be much appreciated as this would match my kitchen cupboards perfectly..? Only down fall was the large group of louts one of which did a sexual act on a saussage at breakfast, i'm no prude and not shy to a saussage but go to your room and do that. See you at the r&b night Mr Marks Tey.

« Needs modernising, looks like a school »

Stayed here recently. This may sound brutal but the place is a dump, and needs serious refurbishing. Very tired and dated interior and the exterior looks like a 1970's built school, in fact quite similar to Grange Hill. Carpets very worn and threadbare, holes repaired with duck tape etc. Bed we reasonably comfortable. The only thing remotely new in the room was the bath taps and shower head. Breakfast was poor, seemed like it had been sitting there for ages sweating away. The mushrooms smelt strange, not like anything I have experienced before. The fruit juices are also watered down. Breakfast was also spoiled by a very noisy group of youngsters. One of them, a young female in her 20's tripped over at breakfast and nearly threw a whole bowl of bran flakes all over someone. She was just being careless, I could see it happening as she was running around like a lunatic. Going mad, shouting etc. It was like a fawlty towers experience. This hotel is extremely warm. No ventilation.

    2
    « Business trip »

This was a strange place. The staff were very pleasant but to be honest it was like stepping back in time 25 years. The building itself is rather old and looks old from the outside. The interior is very dated and tired also. Reminds me a bit of crossroads to show from the 70s. Having said that I did get a very quiet comfortable nights sleep and the breakfast was good in the morning.

    « needs updating »

This hotel is okay for an overnight stay but is in dire need of updating and TLC throughout. they also need to sort their rates out as it is unfairly priced we stayed in a big wedding party and there were big discrepancies in price between the same type of rooms also there is no real difference between exec and standard so dont waste your money paying for exec. On check out the difference of about £50 for the same type of room was questioned that and the fact we were charged for a newspaper that we did not get as we weren't told in the morning that this needed to be collected at reception - usually and it is assumed this was brought to your room. Breakfast was good enough but the service at dinner was poor. The rooms were also very hot. Not terrible overall but I wouldn't stay here again.

    4
    « Afternoon tea spa »

Spa 1 treatment and afternoon tea £28 per person. Wow amazing value. Could do with a Jacuzzi and more seating by the pool. To be honest i think id skip the pool on my next visit, as the massage and afternoon tea are well worth the money. Plus the staff are really helpful expeshally mandy merry. Will defiantly be going back.

    3
« Ok for an overnight stay »

Stayed here for one night to attend a family function so was adequate for my needs. Friendly, helpful staff. However, the hotel interior décor and particularly the reception area is looking very dated and worn - the carpet literally. Paid £10.00 extras for breakfast which was a much as you like buffet and happy with that. I don't expect hot drinks to be from a machine though for that price. In summary I would recommend the hotel for a stop over but not somewhere I would stay if I wanted to use all hotel facilities.

    « Minuses and Pluses »

Pluses : Efficient pleasant staff, very good breakfast choices, very clean and comfortable beds Minuses: In need of makeover everywhere, rooms hallways and especially exterior. Rubbish bins overflowing, dead hanging baskets, stained and worn out carpet in entrance, dead foliage never swept up and peeling paint. Not a good impression when you pull up. Rooms very very basic, completely out of date dark and dingy, worn carpets, old curtains. Think Hotel Inspector would have a heyday. Best Western should know better been in several of their Hotels and they are not consistent won't be recommending this one.

My wife & I enjoyed a very pleasant weekend at this hotel. Our room was very comfortable & clean and the facilities were very good. We had a very nice meal in the hotel restaurant, which was reasonably priced. Also the buffet breakfast was excellent and the staff were anxious to please by assisting with any special breakfast requests. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

« Helpful reception gave the best deals »

Contacting reception to make this booking provided us with the best value and also allowed us to have a connecting room which was ideal for having our 3 teenage daughters within easy reach if the need arose. The rooms were clean and tidy, albeit a bit dated in areas. We had everything we needed anyway and as already mentioned the connecting rooms were a god send. The party was managed well enough and amenities were good for the congregation we had. Bar staff stayed up late and ensured we were kept happy.

    « Mr p seaman »

This hotel whilst well located is very tired as probably hasn't been updated for 30 years. The dining room is in a time warp.our room was very clean and the bed very comfortable . The tv was so small for an executive room and bathroom clean. Had the ala carte evening meal and it only just managed to get into that category. Don't look too closely at the dining room carpets or furniture. The breakfast was the usual but was only just slightly warm and not hot. Price should be reduced in view of this

    « A difficult review »

Hotel is in a convenient location near the A12 and also a train station is quite close. Easy access by car, hotel looks good, day time staff generally friendly night staff seemed less so (everything seemed and effort and they were keen to close the bar, lacked enthusiasm when my party wanted food from the 24 hr service after midnight). Rooms neat and well fitted out, some decor issues my main concern was the heat in the rooms. Was far to hot even with windows open and small fan blowing constantly. Breakfast was standard fayre and plenty of it. Check out was easy and my wrong bill was corrected by one of the very efficient staff on reception.

« I wouldn't risk it again in summer! Overall disappointed. »

Arrived about 7:30 pm on what had been a pleasant late summer day but not a hot one. The room was stifling despite the window being open and a small electric fan having been placed and running on the dressing table. The smallish second floor window had restricted opening, presumably for safety reasons, and despite propping the door to the corridor open I could do little to lower the temperature. There is no air-con. So despite a spotless and comfy bed and throwing off the duvet I was awake most of the night sweating, and when I did nod off it seemed only minutes before I was awoken by traffic noise from the open window. The very heavy curtains open only a little, making the room permanently dark. I daren't think what this room would be like on a hot summer's day and would only consider staying there again in mid winter. Externally the hotel has the appearance of a modified 60's motel and may well be one. Flaking facia paintwork and overgrown shrubbery and plant pots need urgent attention. Staff were friendly and efficient. The room was clean. Furnishing is heavy-lots of dark wood and brasswork, heavy drapes and to my mind a little dated particularly as some looked a bit tired. I hated the forced selling of £10 for breakfast if booked there and then and £13 if booked next morning and struggled to see how either would be reasonable value for money. As remarked by another reviewer the American Diner across the road provides a much better option. I can live with this being a 100% no smoking hotel but not with the notice threatening a £120 surcharge to decontaminate the room in the event I did light up. I would try somewhere else before staying again.

« Interesting conversion from a motel to hotel. »

The hotel was clean and the staff friendly The room clean comfortable and reasonably recently decorated. However there are no lifts to the first floor rooms so specify a ground floor room if climbing stairs with luggage is a problem. The refreshments are expensive £13 for a breakfast (£10 booked in advance Aug 16) is a lot for a simple self serve meal. If you have time I would definitely cross over the road and go to the excellent Bungalow Diner where the staff are really friendly and helpful and cheaper.

    « Gutted i wasted £174!!! »

I recently stayed at this hotel for 2 nights and booked it over other cheaper hotels because i thought it would be a bit nicer. When i checked in and went into the room the window was wide open and the fan was on full blast. It was so painfully hot, it got unbearable! The doors are also so heavy and have a fast self closer on which bang so unbelievably loud i was kept up both nights by people in neighbouring rooms letting their doors slam shut and barely got any sleep over both nights. Not good when you have a long car journey ahead of you!!! The whole hotel needs a revamp and modernisation. The decor looks as though it hasn't had a freshen up in at least 15 years! Even small things like a fridge, iron and ironing board would have been nice in the room. The bar was well over priced and the 4/6 cocktails on the list were unavailable due to not having the ingredients, i opted for the prosecco which also was out of stock. I then requested a sweet wine, white or rose would do- to be told there was no sweet wine! Good points- good gym, good breakfast and convenient location. All in all i am so gutted i wasted £174 on two terrible nights at Marks Tey :(

« GB Tours Scenic Suffolk holiday break »

Initially impressed with impression of hotel upon arrival, however, room standard was very poor. Room carpets were soiled and smelled, no drawers for storage for cloaths, wardrobe very small. Bathroom was clean but no way to regulate shower temprature which only ran boiling hot. Window only opened a fraction with notice stating must remain closed when not in room. No air conditioning meant the room was very stuffy. Food was good with friendly staff. Lounge and bar areas comfortable.

« Good stay marred by noise and wedding party »

Visited with a coach party for 4 nights. Our room was at the rear of the hotel, which unfortunately suffered from noise from a main road and from kitchen ventilator. Closing the window mitigated but didn't eliminate the noise, but it would have been OK except we visited during a heatwave, and closing the window made the room unbearably hot at night (no air conditioning except in executive rooms), and sleeping was difficult. Two days in we were finally able to get a fan from reception, but that night there was a wedding party in, and the noise was horrendous, tolerable music noise, but so much shouting and children running down the corridors - woken up at 3.15 by someone knocking on the door mistaking a room, and then by someone yelling that they wanted a divorce (hopefully not the new bride). In the morning we found that the corridors were smeared with food (floors, walls, glass, mirrors) and mud (hope it was just mud) as well as litter. Such a shame, as otherwise the hotel was good, we had 3 course meals, choice of 3 for each course for evening meal, and most were pretty good. Breakfast was plentiful, self-service. Location was not brilliant but good for getting out into Suffolk for most of our visits and to Beth Chatto gardens. Room facilities were fine, and room was a good size. Moral of the story - get a room on front of hotel which might be quieter and make sure no wedding parties on!

« You get what you pay for. »

Excellent hotel for the money. Managed to book a double room with breakfast through Expedia for £70. Room was clean and comfortable. The hotel could do with some updating but is pleasant enough. The breakfast is excellent with a good selection to choose from the buffet.

    « Pleasantly surprised »

I wasn't expecting plush modern decor nor a 5* experience at this price point so wasn't disappointed - in fact quite the opposite. Hotel has a large and free carpark the reception staff were polite, friendly and helpful at all times, the room (ground floor) was large with lots of storage and was spotlessly clean, large opening windows (a novelty these days!) with a view of the grounds, a large well appointed bathroom with free toiletries. I appreciated the information folder that was in the room, giving not just info about the hotel but places to visit. We didn't eat at the hotel so unable to comment on the food.

    « Where to start! »

Me and a large group of family were here for a wedding. Me and my fiancee booked in for 3 nights, Thursday through to Sunday. When we booked, we were told we would receive a 'discount rate' for being part of a wedding party. Our stay came in at £85 per night, and we were told that did not include breakfast. While speaking to other guests there for the same wedding, who did not use the code and booked online rather than called the hotel directly paid £65 per night including breakfast, which is a tad outrageous. Next,we get to the rooms themselves. When we asked where the room was, we were told 'straight down that corridor'. The corridors themselves feel like your on a boat, with countless mirrors and patterned carpets that change at each corner and make you feel nauseous. After walking straight down a corridor, we found out our room was actually off a different hallway. Once in the room itself (again with a different carpet) it needed some TLC. An update is majorly needed. The tiles that are floor to ceiling in the bathroom remind you of Auntie Muriels old home, and the rail for heating towels were held together with black tape. The tap in the bathroom is the loudest thing you have ever heard in your life. It clunked and made banging noises whenever used, and also either dribbled or splashed everywhere, there was no inbetween. The bath is very thin. As you stand in it you feel your feet are at an angle, and the shower curtain attacks you at every opportunity when you shower as it's made from nylon, which wasn't very nice. We had a standard room, so no air con, and we were on the ground floor so couldn't leave the window open. On the website, it reads 'every room has a stunning view of either our landscaped gardens or tennis courts'. Our amazing view was the front car park. It also states that there is modern technology in each room. I'm assuming that this modern technology is the new lock on the doors (very shiny and you can see its fairly new) and the TV. The TV itself is off to the side on the wall at the bottom of the bed, and you can't pull it out to face you or turn it at all, so unless you want to sit at the table and Watch TV it's not great. Our room was also missing the trouser press which looked like it had been ripped off the wall. There were stains on the carpet and walls which a good steam clean would sort right out. An FYI about the rooms (as it would be personal Preference, is the beds are very soft so I was very stiff in the mornings, but that might be to some people's taste). Next we come to the staff. During the night of the wedding, the brides key card stopped working, so she asked her brother to go and get it sorted. The receptionist told him 'No, the bride needs to come and sort it herself' apparently her going the first three times wasn't enough proof (her brother was with her at these times!) and she had to keep going backwards and forwards when she should have been enjoying her evening. The woman at reception at the time was very rude about this, and didn't want to help. If she doesn't like her job with people, then there's a zoo just down the road. On the Sunday we paid extra for some breakfast. It wasn't worth it. The scrambled eggs were watery, the bacon and sausages were rubbery and the fried eggs were crispy. There's a nice harvester or frankie and bennys a 3 minute drive away, go there instead. The main part of the hotel needs a decent clean. The front windows have so many cobwebs it looks like Halloween has arrived early. And once on the balcony, you can see fluff balls sitting on the entrance doors, and pens on the top of mirrors that have probably been there for years. A long duster isn't expensive and would improve the look of the hotel massively. There are a couple of good things about our stay!! One member of staff (who's name I do not know, but she has long blonde hair and is fairly heavily pregnant) couldn't do enough. She was running around the whole time and was always busy whenever I saw her helping people and making sure the bride and grooms day was perfect. I assume she's a manager, but she was amazing.

« Just 10 minutes away from Colchester Zoo »

The hotel is in a good location. It is situated just a 10 minute drive away from Colchester Zoo so is ideal if you've had a long day at the zoo and need somewhere convenient to stay. The room itself was great. It was spacious, the bed was comfy and had lots of complimentaries such as tea, coffee, shower gel etc. The staff were friendly and made the stay enjoyable. However, cleaners knocked on our door for room service before we had checked out which I expected they would have done once we had checked out, not before. Additionally we were advised to choose a ground floor room as it is the coolest floor but it was still really warm. The hotel did provide us with a fan though to help cool the room down.

    « Friendly Staff »

We went to a friends wedding reception, the main meal was for us disappointing, but the banqueting Hall was impressive in its décor. A hotel for people on there way to somewhere else, all the basic facilities you would expect from as good hotel, friendly staff, well kept surroundings, excellent breakfast.

    « Good value - wonderful staff »

I have stayed at this hotel several times while visiting family and once again had a lovely relaxing stay. All the staff work so hard and are so welcoming. Yes the carpets are a little worn but the rooms, towels and linen are spotlessly clean. The breakfast serving dishes had been updated and improved since our last stay so improvements are taking place. Thank you again and yes we'll be back!

« Lovely staff - Hi Wendy Ho and Tina Turner...! »

This Best Western is near Colchester but there's not much in the nearby area in terms of other restaurants or pubs, so, if you are staying there, you are staying THERE...! The rooms are fine (spacious and nothing to worry about!). We were there on a coach tour, so we had set menus, but, if you are travelling independently, you have an a la carte menu and linen napkins, rather than our paper ones...! Our set menus were simple, but the food was well cooked and, above all, served hot, which is great! For us, it was the staff who made it. Wendy Ho and Tina (Turner!) were great fun, so friendly and helpful. And, generally, the staff were great. The only nit-pick I would have is that the bar ambiance wasn't good at all. It was like a coffee bar and spending 4 evenings there was a bit trying... Other than that, all good. PS It wasn't possible to turn off the bathroom towel rail, which, in the middle of our "summer" was a bit much!!

    « Excellent afternoon tea. »

We were impressed with the greeting we received and were happy to be given a corner table in the window. We had a generous supply of sandwiches after our prawn starter, delicious whole meal scones togther with jam and cream and then 4 cream cakes (2 each) followed by a traditional trifle. We were so full we had to bring the cakes home. The teas were excellent. Superb - we enjoyed every moment. Thanks to the nice friendly staff.

    « AFTERNOON TEA »

We were taken here for afternoon tea by friends to celebrate my husband's 70th birthday. Firstly we were given a tiny Amuse Bouche consisting of Crayfish, Salmon & Egg, it came served on a spoon about the size of a large tablespoon! There then came a plate of finger sandwiches, two cucumber, two smoked salmon & two cheese & tomato, so that is three finger sandwiches each. A selection of 4 fresh cream cakes, (2 each) Plus a very nice scone with cream & jam. Lastly came a 'fruit' trifle, which in truth was not a fruit trifle. It was a small container of jelly,on top of which was custard which was topped with fresh cream & I suppose this is where the fruit came in, there was a single raspberry on the top!!!! There were six different flavoured teas to try, Amaretto Cherry, Walnut & Chocolate, Earl Gray etc., okay but not what I call proper tea. The lady who served us was very attentive & pleasant & it was a treat, but I don't know if it is worth the £11.50 charged per person.

I delivered a training session back in May and was greeted with a complete lack of understanding about the rooms capacity and general functioning of the hotel timings etc. We broke for lunch expecting a good spread for our clients and was greeted by caterpillars staring back at us in our salad, we expected an apology but instead were told that it was a sign of freshness. Four packets of crisps for men didn't quite suffice either. One of the sandwich selection was scrambled egg and cranberry sauce. Not quite what we expected. A terrible stay which I will not be enduring again.

« Nice hotel friendly staff but now needs updating »

Having stopped at the hotel on previous occasions. I returned this week and was upgraded to a room with air conditioning so pleased as it would have been unbearable otherwise. Room was spotless and clean with powerful shower. The rooms are now showing there age and carpets in the hotel are becoming threadbare in places. Staff are all friendly and professional. Are in the bar and the food and service was good. Would happily return to the hotel and I would also recommend it

Stayed overnight for a wedding couldnt check in early so checked in at midnight. Room was so hot i didn't sleep a wink. There was little interest or apology from the staff. In fact I was not even asked how my stay was and had to tell them. Probably because they must have heard it continuously from other customer. I know that a heatwave in the uk is a rare occurrence but if they don't have ac in this day and age they should at least a offer fans when the rooms are over 25degrees. It made for an unpleasant stay.

    « Overnighter »

Stayed following a family wedding in the area and did not arrive till after midnight. I had booked two rooms for myself and my son and his better half. We had been allocated a standard double and an executive room. Upon asking the only difference was that the executive had air con and a mini fridge with two bottles of water, two small bars of chocolate and a bathrobe. Well thank god for the air con, and thank god I grabbed that room. My poor son and his lady barely slept because they were so hot, and at breakfast it seems they weren't the only ones complaining. I would strongly suggest biting the bullet and getting all the rooms fitted with air con, I for one would not stay again unless it was in the winter. Breakfast was quite good, although I did have to wait quite a while for eggs that were not refreshed as quickly as they should have been. Didn't make use of the pool etc so can't comment.

« Very dated and dreary hotel. Surprised to find it rated at 4* »

Very tatty, worn carpets and very much in need of an update. Food ok and staff very helpful which goes some way to compensate for the hotel itself. Also nowhere to sit outside other than a few chairs. The gardens need landscaping and the rubbish cleared from the tennis courts. It was very hot during the night and impossible to sleep as there was no air conditioning and only a limited number of fans available. No lifts for disabled persons.

« Lovely spot for a break in Essex »

Stayed in the Best Western Marks Tey Hotel for two nights as were going to a wedding in Essex. The check in staff were very efficient and friendly. The room was perfect for our needs. We were allocated a room overlooking the garden which meant there was no noise and had a good nights sleep. Bed comfortable, good shower and toiletries provided. Would definitely recommend.

« Windows that let air in, unlike other chain hotels! »

Exceptionally clean and fresh smelling. Decor was individualistic but on the plus side can you ever have too many mirrors? Fantastic parking, staff wonderfully friendly and breakfast excellent. Well done Best Western Marks Tey!

    « Short Stay for a wedding »

I was only here for one night for a wedding nearby, the reception staff were wonderful though, and allowed me to access a room from 11am when i arrived very early to get ready! The rooms are anything spectacular, but for the price i paid they were fine, and very clean. Overall if you are coming to the area id say its good value for money here.

    « Good overnight stay »

Booked into the Marks Tey Hotel for the one night and not disappointed! Arrived early and reception were very helpful, got the room @ 12.30pm as we needed to get changed for a wedding that afternoon. Hotel looks very tired from the outside, a bit dated inside but room and bed were extremely comfortable. Staff were great, nothing was too much trouble and very organized, check in and out very timely and professional. Had a good breakfast in the morning, no complaints, everything was hot and available. Would definitely stay again as the hotel ticked all the boxes, good value and the place has a good vibe about it, good location, large car park and probably most important, great staff!

    « Mr & Mrs »

A lovely weekend spent here - a comfortable room, the hotel is quite dated but clean with a great breakfast, good value with very helpful staff and the best afternoon tea I have ever had - it included vast amount of cream, a starter and a trifle desert!

    « Afternoon Tea »

I was taken for afternoon tea at The Marks Tey Hotel by my friends as a pre-birthday treat. They'd warned me not to eat anything prior to going and to wear elasticated trousers, so I knew I was in for quite a culinary challenge. It was a Sunday mid-afternoon and we appeared to have the place to ourselves. We were showed to our table and offered a choice of 6 speciality teas or Tetley (or we could've had coffee). I particularly liked the floral pattern on all of the matching crockery. The teas was a self-serve affair which was quite a lot of fun as we looked through the little pots of what looked like pot pourri. I chose amaretto cherry which you spoon into tea strainers which have been placed over the cups. We could've tried as many different flavours as we liked, but I stuck with the cherry. The teapot was full of hot water and refilled by staff throughout our meal. Staff were attentive throughout. First course was an amuse bouche. As three of us were having veggie options we had tiny shot glasses of little pieces of mixed melon & pineapple. The one meat-eater amongst us had a fish treat. Then the 3-tiered stands full of grub was brought in; filled with sandwiches, cakes and scones with cream & jam. As if we weren't already full enough, we finished off with mini trifles topped off with half a fresh strawberry. The veggie sandwiches were cheese and pickle, cheese and cucumber and cheese and tomato. We actually didn't manage to finish off all of the sandwiches as there was so much else for us to eat. The scones were large and warm and very filling. We each chose a cake and a tart from the cake plate. All in all it was a great way to spend an afternoon with friends, and good value for money.

« Decent one night stay »

We stayed here whilst we were at a wedding locally. We were able to check in early which was really handy. Bedroom and bathroom were a bit outdated but very comfortable, no complaints. Breakfast is an expensive optional extra - we opted to go to the cafe over the road and pay half the price.

    4
« Lovely stay, nice bed »

We stayed for three nights for a wedding. The first impression was that the hotel is a little dated and shabby. It is quite an old hotel and and I s bit different to the other best westerns I have visited. The room was fine, bed was extremely comfortable, best bed I have ever had at a hotel. It was quiet and they accommodate our request for a quiet room. The hotel was perfectly clean. The breakfast was nice, not anything special but they are cooking for so many, it's to be expected. My only issue with the hotel aside from the place looking dated, was that the lady behind the bar told me she couldn't prepare a soya latte. Dairy allergies are common these days and I expect more than that! I also got the impression that she couldn't really be bothered to do it ( so perhaps you do serve it). I would stay again as all in all it was a good stay and my only recommendation is to accommodate to a dairy allergy.

« Very good just a bit dated »

Excellent check in - v friendly and quick. Room large, clean and comfortable but just a bit tired and dated. Evening meal was good and service excellent. Breakfast was lovely with a wide choice. Pull stay again as overall good value. No road noise.

« overnight stay for weekend wedding »

the room we stayed in was supposed to be one of the better rooms. very old fashioned décor, very uncomfortable bed and extremely noisy over night with doors being slammed and a lot of outside noise from the road. staff very unfriendly and very unwelcoming. the hotel was overall dated and lacking in any welcoming atmosphere.

    4
    « Staff very helpful »

The staff at this hotel were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious and clean and suited us for our stay to attend a wedding in the area. The hotel is excellent value for money and the only downside for me was that there was no air conditioning and the room was very warm at night although there was a fan. There was also not much sound proofing so if you are a light sleeper you will notice this.

« 5 NIGHT STAY. WITH COACH PARTY »

The showers in the baths are really dangerous. I and two other people I know fell because the mats slipped. They obviously knew there was problems as there were so many warnings about trying to get the mats to stick. I hit my head but worst of all I have a large bruise on my leg. I was holding on to the safety handle otherwise I think I would have been knocked out, but the bath side was so high when the mat slipped I fell badly. They then took all the bath mats out of the bathrooms and are trying to get ther ones. The rooms were shabby and the vegetables at the meals were all frozen.

« Good room but service could be better »

The hotel is well kept and quite big so can get disorientated when finding your room! The room itself was very clean and in good order. The bed was comfortable and contains everything you need. I had one dinner in the restaurant and although not gourmet, it was wholesome good quality food. The same goes for the breakfast, good quality hot/cold food and a decent selection. However, during my visit the staff were very young and I was unimpressed by their customer service skills. The worst was the bar tender who must've been no older than 19 and just didn't want to be at work. The waiters in the restaurant were neither assertive or attentive (I had to wait a long time in an empty restaurant for my food to arrive with no update) The front desk assistant was pretty average and was pleasant but didn't look you in the eye when speaking to you. Other than the service, the hotel has good facilities and nice surroundings.

    « Work stay »

Easy to find as sign posted off the A12! Big car park, friendly staff! Food isn't all that though, expensive and not a wide range! But there is a swimming pool and gym for guests and paying public, gym is basic and pool is alright, the pool has a sauner and a steam room! Rooms are nice, big and well equiped!

    « holiday »

lots of good points about hotel, including décor - loved the bust of Hadrian etc, in foyer and layout of said foyer, but staff not especially friendly and room very hot, although it has to be said that the outside temperature was very high..

    « Group Stay »

We had a group booking here recently and in the main the guests were very pleased. Any issues we had were dealt with quickly and professionally by Steve and Steph who were a credit to the hotel. If the hotel could just iron out the issues before they arrise (some of it basic stuff) it would be a fantastic place to stay! However we would certainly stay again.

« Great Value, Great Service »

Very good value for money, great room, good breakfast, and outstanding staff. Easy parking. Surprisingly good hotel, certainly the best, Best Western I've ever stayed at. Location is good. I will definitely stay here again, and recommend to others.

    2
    « Very, very dated »

To start with the positives the room was clean, the shower was good and the bed was comfy. However I'm not sure that the hotel has been refurbished in my lifetime. There were rips in the carpet in the communal areas, in our room there were several visible wall plugs where something had been moved and you could see the old wallpaper beneath. Our room was very hot and although we had air conditioning it didn't seem to do much. The whole hotel is in dire need of a complete refurbishment. I can only guess that it is still in business due to the lack of any alternatives nearby.

    2
    « Disappointing - not satisfactory »

No Wi-Fi for the 36 hours we were there. Smoking allowed directly in front of hotel so when coming or going get drenched in smoke. Also, when at front desk and the front door opens, smoke comes into lobby. Got locked out and had to get key cards reset 3x in the 36 hours we were there - one time could not find anyone at desk for 15 minutes.. Room a bit dirty. Shower difficult to operate. Gym pretty lousy - only one leg machine (for inner and outer thighs - a machine with a dubious rep anyway)

    3
    « Satisfactory stay »

The booking experience on-line was not too successful, I put in the required information of 2 adults and 1 child in one room and paid for the selection. The next day I had a call requesting a further £15 for a z bed, I thought it was either a joke or a sales ploy to get more money from me. I refused to pay the additional £15 as I had selected a room for 3 people but been sold a room to only sleep 2, my request to cancel was declined. It took a couple of calls to the manager to sort, not ideal. Eventually sorted. We had a nice stay. I agree with previous reviews that the rooms were a little dated but nothing too drastic. The breakfast was good. There was a wedding taking place in the hotel so the bar could do with more seating. We went for a swim (could do with some signs to direct you to the leisure facility), I did think the pool could do with a clean. Excellent location for zoo, retail park and restaurants.

    4
    « Good Hotel »

Good place to stay, close to Colchester town. Plenty of parking spaces, quiet rural location. Quiet and relaxing bar area. Unusual - two easy chairs in the room. Why do most budget hotels only supply ONE? Maybe needs a refresh of the public areas - the carpet is a bit worn in places. The rooms are comfortable but it would be useful if one could rotate the TV to make it more visible from both beds. Never did find the switch to turn on the heated towel rail in the bathroom so had to get towels laundered daily!

« A great stay with lovely afternoon tea »

We've just returned from a 2 night stay booked via Superbreak which included an afternoon tea . I had booked the tea in advance but we arrived early which was no problem and we were shown to a table in the restaurant. There was a choice of loose leaf teas as well as Tetley tea bags. Unusually for an afternoon tea, we got a canape of crayfish, egg mayonnaise and salmon which was delicious. Then they brought out the tea, which consisted of 4 types of sandwich, a lovely warm home made fruit scone with jam and clotted cream and a selection of cakes which were a chocolate eclair, a strawberry tart, a banoffee meringue pie and a vanilla slice. All were delicious! The tea was unlimited which was nice, and just when we thought we were finished, they then brought out a fruit trifle. One of the better afternoon teas we've had. The man on the desk was very pleasant, as were all of the staff members we spoke to. Our bedroom on the second floor was very clean and large, and although the furniture was quite dated it was a lovely room. We overlooked the gardens which had rabbits roaming free. Although there was a wedding one night, we never heard any noise and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was a buffet and there was loads of choice - cereals, hot food, pastries, fruit and yoghurts, all of which was also delicious. We would definately stay at this hotel again if we were in the area, no question.

    « Just About Adequate »

Recently passed a long weekend here while in a coach party touring Constable country. The room was OK, well equiped and clean. Food was just about adequate - the broccoli and stilton soup could have been anything while the lettuce garnish on various starters was extremely old. Service was good. Breakfast is a buffet which means inevitably that fried eggs can become solidified.

« Perfect for short business trip »

Large comfortable room - very clean and well presented - excellent hot and powerful shower - great night's sleep. Although excellent for road access via the A12 to London, you do need a car as it is quite some distance from anywhere of interest.

    « Mixed reviews »

I have stayed at this hotel on business on a few occasions now and have had mostly good experiences. The positives ... Rooms are always clean and spacious and have all the facilities you need for a short stay. The food here is beautiful I order room service everything I stay and it never fails to impress me. The reception staff are friendly and professional and offer a quick and efficient service everytime. The gym is also brilliant and I use it everytime I stay a great facility and way to unwind after a day at work. The negatives ... Last time I stayed I was on the ground floor and the room had a funny musty smell to it. I will request a room on the second floor where I have previously stayed in future. The member off staff on the bar was really rude to me also the last time I stayed. I was completley ignored for about five minutes while a conversation between her and an already served customer took place I wasn't even akwnowledged which I think Is unacceptable. Then after waiting i was asked to return to my room and get my card to prove I had preotherised it at reception although I had already shown it once in the evening and she had served me on several occasions at the hotel on previous visits. I am not saying she should have remembered me from months ago but from the same night after ignoring me for five minutes this didn't go down well. I will come back to the hotel as apart from this incident I have never had any problems before and in general love it here. Hoping this particular member of staff may have been having a bad day which happens to all of us. It just shows how a little bit of customer care goes a long way.

« Great if your expectations are not too high »

Recently stayed for two nights whilst on a coach trip to visit Constable Country. Before setting off I read the reviews and was appalled at the prospect of staying there. Fortunately my worst fears were not realised, but Best Western needs to smarten the place up - it is looking very tired, particularly in the communal areas. Some of the staff could certainly have been more welcoming and the food did not match up to the description on the dinner menu. seems to cater for coach parties, weddings and other functions - not ideal for a couple seeking a quiet, romantic stay.

Very nice room. Clean and comfortable. Very handy for Constable country and surrounding national trust properties. Food ok. Staff helpful and friendly. Bar very busy in the evening. Good facilities. Has a lovely pool.

    « Nice enough »

Our stay was booked as part of a wedding reception held on the premises. Our room was reasonable size, clean, tidy and with all the expected facilities. Check in was straight forward. The breakfast was disappointing as the hotel was full so the hot buffet kept running out , or there were no plates, juice glasses etc and an apparent lack of sufficient staff to cope with the numbers. Patience was rewarded as the food quality was very good.

    3
    « Group booking »

The hotel is a little tired and in need of updating, especially the bedrooms. We were a large party of walkers and the staff at Mark Tey could not have been more helpful with all our needs. A good selection of breakfast was available. The Essex Way Is nearby for walks along the beautiful countryside .

    « Perfectly comfortable stay »

Clean and quiet hotel just off the A12. Dated decor but in fitting with the hotel's age. Added benefit of a swimming pool and gym free of charge. Very handy for Colchester Zoo and Constable country. Try direct booking to get best B&B rate.

« A good place to rest your head »

We stayed for two nights to attend a weeding nearby. Prior to arriving we requested a room near reception which was granted. We were a party of two adults a child and a baby. We brought our own travel cot. We were warned in advance it would be a tight squeeze for us all in one room but as we were only sleeping there it was fine. The best thing about the hotel are the staff. They were all very polite and helpful and o dot t honk I've ever been to a hotel where every employee was so friendly. The decor is very dated and the whole hotel is in desperate need of refurbishment. There was only one large window that opened and meaning we couldn't get any air during the night and it became extremely warm!! The breakfast was really good. Not a thing to complain about at all!! The hotel served a purpose for us but we probably wouldn't visit again. I felt it was overpriced considering the state of the rooms, bathrooms and public areas.

    3
    « Hot and Noisy »

We stayed in a room on the first floor overlooking the front car park. This was a mistake and I should have asked to be moved. The room was hot as the window only opens little (H&S) and was very noisy. No A/C. Cars leaving late at night from parties and functions with all attendant noise. The front of the hotel is used as the smoking area so plenty of noise there from the smokers, especially those who have had a lot to drink. They should move this to the back through the bar area.Breakfast price is exorbitant (its where they make their money) and its cheaper to go down the road to the Bungalow Diner with a better choice. A bottle of water from the bar costs £3,65 to take to the room. I have stayed there many times and blame myself for not asking to change rooms. Recommend you ask for a room on the top floor at the back.

    « A step back into the 80's »

Stayed here for 2 nights to attend a nearby family wedding. Room was clean and comfortable but the decor in the room and throughout the hotel was very tired. We had an evening meal and breakfast at the hotel both of which were nice. The bath is quite raised so care needs to be taken when getting out of the shower as it is more of a step than you'd think!

« Weekend away with disabled person »

Visiting Essex for a family christening, we needed a comfortable hotel with easy access for a wheelchair bound age'd mother. This hotel was able to provide excellent facilities on the ground floor and the visit was a great success. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Bar food and breakfast was ok and met the standard of a mid priced hotel. We certainly had no complaints and would use the hotel again. I would like to say that during our stay, we witnessed disgraceful behaviour by some particularly difficult non-residents who tried to get complimentary drinks by complaining unfairly about the bar snacks. The hotel staff and duty manager dealt with the situation in a very professional manner and they left. We found all the staff very pleasant to deal with.

    2
« do not eat the breakfast »

appalling, expensive, stale, cold and unedible.breakfast. Overall the hotel is not too bad and although there is no climate control in the rooms they are quite clean and comfortable and the hotel is just off the motorway and central for most locations in the area. Just do not have the breakfast, you will be ill.

We had a fantastic midweek wedding in April at this hotel. Everything went extremely well with all hotel staff involved were fantastic and bent over backwards to ensure our big day went like clockwork. Recommend using the local company the hotel use for room decorations as not only are they well priced but the room looked great. Many thanks to all we had a ball and the new Mrs H was very happy indeed.

« The best wedding day ever »

We had our wedding day here on the 25th March 2016 and the team at the hotel could not do enough for us. From the day we booked the venue to the day of our wedding. Nothing was too much trouble and it made our day extra special. Dan and his team on the day of our wedding was amazing, we needed a laptop for some surprise videos to be run on and one of the team went home to get his own to help us out. Everyone one went above and beyond. The food was gorgeous and everyone had a great time. Thank you to everyone at Marks Tey Hotel for making our wedding day the best day ever.

    « Fantastic wedding experience! »

I would just like to say what a fantastic service Marks Tey hotel provided for a wedding we went to on Sun 1st May. Everything from the attention to detail (from the excellent front of house manager) to the impeccable service of the waiting staff this was just a fabulous experience. I had no expectation as I hadn't been to Marks Tey hotel before but in terms of value for money and the quality of service (plus immensely friendly atmosphere) you can't beat it. Well done guys!!!

    « Group Garden holiday »

This is an excellent choice for a group holiday. The staff could not have been more kind, co-operative and helpful. The choice of food for the dinners over 4 nights was tasty, varied and well presented. It was a tremendous help that our party of 40 were able to be in a separate room to the main dining room. The rooms were comfortable and room service good. Marks Tey is an excellent position as a centre for travel in the area.

    « Mrs »

Rather disappointed with the fabric of this hotel, considering it is a four star. It didn't look as if it had been updated for a long time. The carpet on the stairs was treadbare. The wardrobe door fell off when I opened it. There was no bulb in my bedside lamp. I reported the maintenance issues and nothing was done. The duvet was wafer thin, the duvet cover was too big and very plain. The floor in the bathroom was very slippery, even with footwear on. The rubber bathmat slipped in the bath and if I hadn't been holding on I would have had a nasty accident. I was given a first floor room and there was no lift. On the positive side the brass handrails were shiny. The staff were polite. The bed was comfortable. And it was heated well.

    2
    « Rooms are Poor. »

Most of the hotel was lovely and grand. Very old fasioned with the big chandelier In the lobby. But the rooms are very poor could do with a big revamp new carpets and a fresh lick of paint. Drawers where full of dust and many of the surfaces where dusty. Also not very baby friendly. No children parking spots making it very hard to get baby out and all of suitcases. All in all could do with revamp. Apart from that. Staff where friendly and proffesional.

    « Seen Better Days »

Hotel is tired to say the least. Paint peeling from exterior. Public areas are better but the room we had was very poor. Threadbare carpet, bathroom in dire need of refurb and light over mirror not working, headboard to bed was marked and looked unclean. Staff friendly and keen to help. Bar prices were high.

    « Definitely not 4*! »

On arrival our booking could not be found. Staying at the hotel for three days this seemed to be a common problem as I heard similar conversations with other guests. The reception staff are not welcoming and no offers of help were given to carry bags upstairs, including for elderly guests. The rooms are small and in desperate need of renovation. The carpets are very old and the beds small and uncomfortable. In addition, despite twin rooms being booked for 2 guests, only one bath towel was provided and no spare pillows etc. The hairdryers look like they were purchased in 1960! The pool and gym opening times seem to change daily and reception staff are unable to provide accurate times for this, especially on bank holidays. Breakfast is nice, covering a good range, however I had to seek out the information on when it was served and tea and coffee are not offered unless you ask. Most disgusting was the level of cleanliness in the hotel. Vomit was reported to reception staff as being on the stairs at 7pm from one of the wedding guests and was still there at 10.30 when I returned to the hotel. No attempt was made to clean it up. A lot of weddings are held and the confetti etc from these is not cleaned up. At 1.30 in the afternoon confetti from the previous day was being cleared! Finally the wifi did not work at any point. I definitely would not stay here again. .

I booked this hotel for my partners birthday as a surprise get away , I saw the hotel had a 4 star rating and the pictures online looked very nice , as it was her birthday I booked the double executive room complete with breakfast .. this in total was £104. we turned up and seeing the state of the outside my heart sank. we proceeded to check in thinking the room would be lovely .. the receptionist was very polite and helpful . we made our way to the room , once in the room again was very disappointed. the room was very small and dark, there were stains on the floor and all over the headboard , the curtains were ripped and the bathroom was dirty . The TV was tiny and had been fixed to the wall opposite the bed on the far left so could not watch it from the bed . There were chunks out of the wall and stains on the chairs . I felt so bad I had bought my partner to such a nasty hotel. I decided there was no way we were spending that amount of money to stay in such a room so we checked out .. he receptionist was again very polite and understanding but at the same time did not seem shocked about out reasons for not wanting to stay.

    « Definitely not 4 **** »

Rooms very small, beds uncomfortable and staff not helpful. Hotel not cleaned regularly, including vomit on the stairs reported at 8pm and still there on our return from dinner at 10.30pm. Left over confetti only cleaned at 1pm from the wedding the day before. Pool and Gym shut despite published time of opening at 8am - and me checking with reception the night before. Breakfast was nice. Wifi supposed to be available, but did not work at all.

Stayed for one night, staff were polite and helpful, room was nice and clean and pool was lovely and warm. Although we didn't eat or drink in the bar or resturant it did look very nice. All in all a nice comfortable evening

    « 2night getaway »

stayed here tuesday and wednesday night for a well deserved break. 2nights for £140 including breakfast and evening meal on the first night. Represented good value for money. was upgraded on arrival from room 124 to 246 due to producing my Best western gold rewards card.... very good sized room, very clean and well equiped to the Best western standard,, food was very well presented and of a very good quality, duck breast starter, followed by pan fried sea Bass, for me and creamy mushroom pastry and chicken filled with mozzarella for my wife. Drinks and bar menu also very reasonably priced, Health suite was also used, only 1 gripe though, they have removed the jaccuzi,,,,,, Why remove it and replace it with a decked seating area, Would like to see the jaccuzi reinstated into the pool area, All in all a very good 2 days away. Thought the waiting staff in the restaurant done a very good job, polite and friendly, Good clean and tidy hotel will be back a 3rd time

« Noisy and needs updating »

We stayed at Best Western Marks Tey for one night for a local event. The hotel is convenient for the A12 and is close to Colchester. The hotel needs modernising as it is very dated having said that it was very clean but the décor is of the 1980's.The room we had was very noisy due to a wedding taking place at the hotel. The breakfast was buffet service but it was of an adequate standard with reasonable choice but very much do it yourself. The only slight niggle we reported to reception was the paper we ordered didn't get delivered and it appears that they had given it to someone else so the deducted it from the bill.

« The only thing this hotel is missing is Basil Fawlty »

This is the worst hotel I have ever stayed in. We booked it recently for our wedding party and it was a epic cock up from the beginning. Room bookings were misplaced, rude staff, very dated dirty rooms the list goes on. It reached a crazy climax when my new husband and I were refussed entry to the wedding suit at 1am on our wedding night because we didn't have a room key (wedding dresses don't have pockets) and the receptionist said the room was already booked out..................."yes to us" was our reply and then we made a lot of wild gestures at the wedding clothes we were wearing but to no avail. We were made to pay for another room £80 and sent of to what to can only be described as the worst room in the house. Do not book this hotel.

    « Shocked! »

My partner booked this place as a overnight break, we was both disappointed with many aspects, firstly our room was sweltering hot and in desperate need of updating, the bar area is so very small, there was a wedding going on when we was there, why guests feel the need to use the hotel bar is beyond me, this caused many problems, we ordered food and was still waiting 45 mins later, this was also due to there only being one barman!!!!!! We decided to use there spa and pool, what a joke, we was informed that we needed to supply our own PADLOCK for the changing area to store our clothes, how disgraceful! The pool was split in half as kids were having swimming lessons and as for the sauna/steam rooms please don't bother! We booked for the restaurant for our evening meal, my partners meal was nice but as for my £21 sirloin steak, it was like chewing a leather boot! Then I ordered the cheese board and well the brie was solid and just crumbled when cut, also celery was on menu but not on plate!! Another guest also was questioning weather or not it was brie! It had been pretty cut and left to dry out, unprofessional I think. We was glad to get out the next morning and would not recommend this hotel and non existent spa!!!

This is one of the worse hotels I ever stayed in , the smell of damp hits you the minute you walk in the door , the room the curtains were all ripped , heating didn't work this hotel was like we had stepped back in time so old fashioned, and not sure how you can say it's a spa hotel (nothing there) really is not worth the money I have had a better room and breakfast at a travel lodge go to them instead , they need to modern this place or I am sure it will shut , huge grounds you could do so much to it.

    « Nice hotel »

Nice hotel located ideally for visiting Colchester area and Essex coastline. Staff friendly and helpful. Nice pool with sauna and steam room plus gym - avoid the swimming classes. Breakfasts very good. Room very comfortable. Slight background traffic noise from a12 but hardly noticeable in rooms.

    « Go somewhere better »

Hotel was easy to find. Parking was free and there was a space to park in. The woman at reception used a lot of jargon, which I had to ask her to explain, so not a great start. She then immediately put our bill up by £10 more than when I booked on the phone, but I wanted a nice stay so I ignored it. The room smelt strongly of Febreeze so I opened a window to air it. This proved a useful place to put my milk too as I'd brought my own milk and tea bags as I knew it was a Best Western. It also made me wonder what had happened in there before us to need so much air freshener and that caused me to notice the stains. In the bathroom there was one bath towel and one hand towel, so we shared it one after the other between the three of us. We wanted the TV on but there was no remote control. Reception brought one to us but it did not work. So they brought another one. That did not work either. So they said they would 'room-move' us. Odd to use jargon instead of English but this at least I could translate for myself. We stayed and used the TV manually. This caused me to notice the Heath Robinson way the TV was wired in, a dangerous hook on the curtains and the stains on the walls. I washed my hair in the bath that has a warning sticker and though I brought my own toiletries (because I knew it was a Best Western) there was in fact one small soap one one small shampoo to share between the three of us and I found a second towel in the wardrobe. I celebrated this find very carefully as the bathroom floor is very slippery. It was a short lived celebration though as the ridiculous hair dryer in drawer arrangement caused an actual row, and the girl arrived with the second remote control while I was drying my hair, for which you have to have the drawer open and she had to clamber past to try out the remote control which did not operate the poorly fitted TV. That night we found we had four pillows between three people, which did not work well for us. Breakfast was nice, although no-one attempted to offer any of the vegetarian alternatives and there was no melon even though it's on the menu.

    « Poor Bar Service »

I recently stayed at this hotel for a few days and enjoyed most of my stay. The room was good, the food was good and the gym facilities exceeded my expectations, which was most pleasing! I agree with other reviews that the hotel could do with a makeover but having stayed here a few times before and hearing the same complaints, I really don't think the management will pay out for extensive refurbishment works as they haven't done much in the last 20 years, so I really don't think they will start now. No review is without a moan, so here's the downside of my visit. The staff, although reasonably friendly, seem to abandon their posts whenever they feel like it. The girl on reception spent half the evening behind the bar helping herself to drinks and talking to the barmaid instead of manning the front desk. The barmaid (Tina) was very friendly and talkative, although she seemed to be running off every five minutes with food orders to the kitchen which then leaves the bar unattended for lengthy periods of time with queuing customers. There seem to be several youngsters working there constantly running around without any real direction, and one younger lad called Glen who was more interested in standing in front of the glass mirrors playing with his hair than concentrating on his work duties. I'm sure he and his friends who wear the tight trousers thought it was more of a fashion parade when they ran through from the restaurant into the bar. At this point I wasn't sure if I was staying in a hotel or watching a gay pride march. The lovely Wendy was very welcoming in the restaurant and dealt with any query I had swiftly, although she was very loud when talking so I could see the art of discretion was not her strongest attribute. The same could be said for the Bar Manager Steve who was also very friendly and jovial, but his laugh could be heard from the Marks Tey to the M25 - Not pleasant when you have had a hard day and just want some peace and quiet before retiring to your room. All in all, a reasonable stay but with some key staff improvements this hotel could certainly be more improved and professional.

    « Ok ish »

The room, gym, swimming pool...nothing special. Cant complain. Was as expected with the price. The dinner however was quite bad. Waiters hadn't been trained properly and were quite obviously incompetent at their jobs. Looked like part timers. Had me waiting for minutes before being seated because none of them was around. When they did come out of the kitchen they just chatted to each other and didn't look in my direction at all....was hard to order my food. When food come...my fish was too salty a bit over cooked...trimmings were equally poor. A cook made this not a chef.

« Marks Tey Best Western »

The hotel now looks tired but the staff & food inc service are always good. We need to visit Colchester at least annually to see friends & the hotel is well positioned for access from main roads without having to go into the busy town centre. Rooms are of a reasonable size & comfortable. No subtitles are available on the TV equipment which is a problem as one of the party is profoundly deaf. We reported a defective light bulb on arrival but no replacement was made before the end of our visit 4 days later. The rooms are rather gloomy even with all lights in use.

« Dissapointing in several respects »

We arrived about 1930 but had to wait some time before anyone appeared at the Reception desk. Although I had booked in November they still managed to make a mistake in the booking, my booking acknowledgement had one room two adults the computer showed one room one adult; this was immediately corrected. The room itself was very nice, quiet and comfortable but getting to the room was very difficult for my disabled wife as there is no lift. Generally the place looked very tired, worn carpets and dated décor. I found the bar prices very high and the choices very limited, the biggest shock came at breakfast, a buffet poorly cooked and not very warm, but the killer was the price - it is cheaper to eat in Central London than in Marks Tey.

« Comfortable hotel. Just few miles outside Colchester »

Hotel is just off the A12, and about 10-15 minutes from centre of Colchester, depending on traffic. Large car park. Briefly. Room and bed comfortable, good food in the restaurant with decent menu, (both breakfast and dinner) and good value price. It has a leisure centre which we didn't have time to use. Hotel staff were very pleasant and helpful. Hotel and décor probably a bit dated and a bit tired in places but don't let that put you off. Would certainly stay there again. Hotel holds conferences, weddings etc, but I think it is probably big enough for that to be unobtrusive. Quite well located for touring the area. Not sure about bus service, but it is off the B1408 which is a main bus route.

« A brilliant weekend surrounded by friendly staff »

My partner and I came for the weekend to enjoy some local walks and we cannot praise the hotel enough. Everything was excellent from arrival to departure. Friendly and efficient staff, a quiet and comfortable room, a pleasant and reasonably priced bar, a very good dinner menu with well-prepared food in the restaurant together with a more than adequate breakfast. Brilliant. We will be back.

    « Below average »

This hotel is great if you need to stop somewhere cheap with access to the main road or rail links. The staff are friendly and there is a nice pool. The hotel itself is below average. The rooms have not been renovated for years, with different patterns on floor, walls, curtains and headboard all of which clashed. The walls are paper thin and could hear people's conversations on both sides. The shower was hot and powerful. Time to renovate (or even just decorate) the rooms!

Stayed here with my Husband last night. Lovely hotel. Comfortable beds, and clean spacious rooms. Free wifi and parking. 4-5 min drive to local shopping complex. Breakfast a bit steep at £13.50 each, if not included in your room rate. Free use of pool and leisure facilities. Would stay here again.

    « Valentine's Celebration »

Have stayed at this hotel several times in the past. Decided to celebrate Valentine's Day here, so booked a room on the ground floor, in a quiet area at the end of a corridor. Arrived around 2.30pm to be told our room was not ready yet, although checking in is from 2.pm. Receptionist told us to go in the lounge and if we fancied they did a nice Afternoon Tea Selection, which was advertised in reception, with lots of yummy cakes available. So we were not worried too much about our room. Found a comfortable location and went to order our Afternoon tea, only to be told it has to be pre-ordered the day before. So I queried this,, and asked what was so special about it, you had to pre order. She did not know and laughed, and said they did some lovely sandwich's. So we did just that, yes the sandwich's were delicious. Once finished we went back to reception to book in. Our room still not ready, so they moved us to a different room that had been originally allocated. Room 127 - nice room bit tired, same decoration for well over 15 years. Comfortable with a lovely bed. After a couple of hours we felt cold so turned the radiator on, but it was not working. Not impressed, it was a cold day and snow was the forecast over night. So we rang reception, a nice guy arrived with the intentions of showing us how to put the radiator on. He soon realised it never worked. So he arranged a room change. Off we trots to 171 - having got ready for dinner in our previous room we went to the restaurant. 3 course meal, beautiful food and lovely presented. Nice staff. Just one hick up. A couple of kids playing around all the tables, and their parents were not interested in the noise they were making, while other guests were trying to have a romantic meal. So inconsiderate. Luckily they left just before our main course arrived. We enjoyed our dinning experience, and sat outside in the lounge afterwards for a coffee. Good nights sleep and quiet. Up early for a shower, only to find the shower was not working. Tried for half hour, water stone cold. Not impressed. Hot water to the sink, but not to the shower. Really made us angry. So it was a cats lick and off to breakfast. Both had the hump. Breakfast option was help yourself, but from previous visits noticed how some options had been taken off the menu. Checked out at 10.30am told the receptionist about the shower, he apologised, but was not phased at all. Offered to deduct a couple of drinks we had the night before. Left for home, but very disappointed. The hotel is run down, needs new carpets and a total refurbishment.

    « Lovely little place »

We booked this room plus breakfast for 80.00 for me and my husband to stay in as we were going to a wedding reception in the hotel that evening. We were about an hour from home so we visited Colchester zoo first then had lunch then checked in. Check in went very smoothly and we were soon in our ground floor room. It was comfortable and fairly large overlooked a field full of bunnies hopping around. The bed was very comfortable and although the room was very warm when we entered we soon sorted that out by adjusting the heating. Shower was lovely good water pressure although bath was very high to climb into if you have mobility issues. The wedding reception was lovely and we were a little worried as the bar only took cash but after speaking to reception we could charge drinks to our room so that was all good. The receptionist was absolutely lovely and complimented my dress too. We had an excellent sleep and went to breakfast and that was plentiful and delicious with full fry up and pastries fresh bread and fruit and jams etc. Would recommend this place if you are in the area for sure.

« A marked decline since previous visits. »

I have stayed at the Marks Tey hotel, for both business and leisure purposes, many times over the past 15 years. I have attended several of their themed weekend breaks too, so thought it would be nice to revisit the hotel on Valentines Day. My last visit was in 2012. Upon arrival at 2.40pm, we were informed that our room was not ready (although advertised to be available from 2.00pm) and it was suggested that we spent time in the bar until it was available. After seeing the Afternoon Tea being advertised, we decided that we would perhaps enjoy our waiting time over a pot of tea, sandwiches, cakes etc. To our surprise, we were informed that Afternoon Tea had to be booked in advance! We therefore returned to the bar area and ordered sandwiches and tea. These were very nice. By 3.30, we had not received any news with regard to our room, so I enquired at Reception, only to be told that there would still be quite a wait. We were offered another room, which we accepted. Upon entering the room, I couldn't help noticing how run-down the establishment had become. Rooms were clean, but looked very tired. However, there were tea making facilities, and we decided to stay in that room. After an hour, we noted how cold the room had become, and despite adjusting the thermostat, we had no success in getting the radiator to function. Having called Reception, someone came round and confirmed that the heating was faulty. We were offered another room. We moved immediately. The second room was similar to the first; run-down with evidence of makeshift wallpaper repairs, and several holes where items that were once standard facilities (trouser press I remember quite well) had been removed. However, the room was at least warm. bed lined was very clean. We visited the restaurant at 8.15. From past experience, the restaurant at the Marks Tey was always worth a visit, and I am pleased to say that standards had been maintained. I opted for a pickled smoked salmon starter, followed by Duck breast, served with red cabbage and dauphinoise potatoes. I additionally ordered a medley of vegetables as a side dish. I finished with the cheese selection. I thoroughly enjoyed my meal. My partner opted for a duck breast starter, followed by Lamb Rump for mains, and finished with the Eton Mess. Again, this was very good, and staff were very pleasant and attentive. Our enjoyment was only marred by the occupants of a table close to use who had two young children, who seemed to believe it was perfectly OK for them to run around the restaurant, hiding under tables, and generally disturbing other guests. Admittedly this was not the hotels fault, but rather a demonstration of poor parenting in my opinion. We retired to the bar afterwards for coffee. We both slept well, and the room was indeed comfortable. There was a TV provided, along with hairdryer. Basic facilities. In the morning we were unable to shower, as there was no hot water. With it snowing outside, I did not fancy an ice cold shower. We mentioned this when we checked out, and the cost of our after dinner coffees were removed from the bill. However, since I had paid at the bar for them, they should not have been on the bill at all! So, overall, I have to say that the Marks Tey Hotel has declined somewhat over the years. It needs investment, and at the very least, a refurbishment. Staff are very helpful and pleasant, but at the end of the day, it has to be said that the hotel has lost its shine.

« It looks like crossroads motel ha ha »

Despite not being the prettiest of hotels I have to say I was very pleased with the level of comfort and service throughout my two days stay here, the room was large and clean even if the bathroom was a little dated, but again clean and functional there was a pool on sight which appeared to be very popular given the number of people walking round in dressing gowns, the bar area again harked back to an earlier time but was busy (in fact could have done with more seating) and popular I ate at the bar twice and both meals where plentiful, well cooked and tasty - definitely felt as though they had been cooked for me rather than sat there waiting to be reheated. Overall comfortable, good service and a place to rest your body couldnt have asked for more

    « A very charming hotel »

I have really enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I was slightly apprehensive after reading some of the previous reviews but I found it to be so charming. Yes it could do with some updating in areas but the overall feel to the hotel is warm and friendly. The staff at check in were really helpful nfr informative and I ordered room service on one night which was quick and tasty at a very reasonable price. The location of the hotel is really good very accessible and made my business trip hassle free and simple. The breakfast is something that let's this hotel down as there is not much choice compared to other hotels in have stayed at in a similar price range. The sausagues are poor quality and the beans were cold. Away from that tiny negative I have had a really lovley stay and look forward to returning when I am back in the area in the future.

« Fairly good experience but a few bad points »

General - clean hotel, nice food, helpful staff, a serious attempt to make the hotel more accessible. But some fall-off such as the inaccessible entrance, missing vertical grab rails in the wetrooms, no clear evacuation policy (I asked for this on registering) and lift problems. The hotel has wide doors and corridors, so plenty of room to manoeuvre around, and the accessible bedroom actually was accessible - much better than many hotels I've seen. But there was no vertical grab rail in the shower, making it a bit risky - and my walking stick wet when I had to use it instead. (I checked and found that other disabled guests had also found this an issue, but the manager disagreed.) Staff were very helpful; although not fully trained they were willing to listen and understand issues such as 'why you shouldn't store chairs in the access route to the lift' and 'as the upstairs bar doesn't serve coffee, why I can't go downstairs to collect a tray of coffee and bring it up here myself while driving a mobility scooter'. The hotel was very clean, and the bedroom was almost completely dust-free (no asthma attacks!). The usual problems with no dropped desk at reception, and some of the breakfast buffet area wasn't accessible but staff were on hand to help. There were a few maintenance problems - mainly with the lift which meant I could not use it unaided. One serious access issue - the path from the road dead ends with no dropped kerb, and going back to the top to come down on the road itself didn't work due to an awkward speed bump. I spent sometime on the other side of the hotel entrance trying to attract attention before I collared another guest in the car park, who went to get help. No point having accessible bedroom if only car users can get into the hotel. And one other thing to note - taxis come from Colchester and the firms charge a call-out fee. The taxi from the hotel to the local station, about 0.65 mile, cost £11. If I'd have known I'd have driven my scooter back to the station (once someone had got it up the kerb!).

    « Bad service »

My mother in law was taken to Hospital in colchester so we needed a hotel for one night overstay. Booked on line because we could not contact the hotel direct via land line, we needed to talk to the receptionist because we needed to check in very late sometime around mid night. We started phoning the hotel around 7.30pm when we left our home in Surrey, we drove all around the M25 & up the A12 via dartford which took 2hrs we must have phoned the hotel over 20 times till someone answered the phone over 2 hrs to answer there phone ( unbelievable ) when we arrived at midnight we stood at the reception for 10 mins until someone came & checked us in. The young man who was going to check us in seemed to be confused with the check in procedure and had to get someone to help him. Any way eventually we got our key to the room. We felt the hotel was a bit run down & needed a facelift some decorating would be good, looked like it was last done in the eighties. Breakfast was good. Staff very helpful. Easy parking. Not sure we will use this Hotel again. Management need to get there act together.

Have stayed at a couple of other Best Westerns with family so although on the outskirts we were not disappointed. Our room on the ground floor was good although beginning to look a bit tired, very comfy bed & bathroom excellent & hot water. All areas were very clean. We didn't use the leisure facilities.Staff were helpful & friendly, breakfast adequate. Drinks were expensive but the bar meals in the evening were very good & reasonably priced. A very popular Hotel it seems.Wi -Fi had quite weak signal.Would definately book again.

My partner and I stayed for a two night break and we had a lovely time at the hotel. It was a "Winter Break" which included bed and breakfast and boy did I stuff my face! I put on 31/2lb. I had stayed at this hotel before and it was exactly the same. It was new for my partner and he was very impressed and said he would definitely come again. Rooms were clean and tidy. Staff were friendly and helpful. The fitness area was acceptable too.

« Excellent Review for the Marks Tey »

Just back from a six night stay at this hotel which mostly was a very enjoyable experience. All the staff we encountered were exceptionally friendly and helpful, the food was really good - especially the evening meals! Can certainly recommend the sea bass! Delicious! A bonus was the acceptance of Gourmet Society cards. Our room was larger than average with comfy beds and everything was spotlessly clean. Plenty of parking just outside. The few negatives were minor i.e. cooked breakfast could have been hotter some mornings and the choice of background music in the dining room at breakfast was rather suspect and too loud. The problem with no TV remote in our room could not be resolved but it was not through lack of trying by the staff. Yes, as has been said, some updating is needed but it is not really a major problem as everywhere was clean and tidy. If we were in the area again we would love to stay here again.

    « Dated »

This hotel is dated and the rooms do need a major investment if they are to succeed. Good location, beds ok but do note that The wine is very expensive, price certainly not in keeping with other hotels/restaurants in the area. Our room was clean but dated and wallpaper was hanging off the wall

« Good winter price deal - hotel looks dated »

We needed a one night stay for visiting friends nearby. We had stayed previously 4 or 5 years ago. looked up online and saw the price and pictures and all looked well. The staff were very on the ball and the hotel was fine but needs a bit of updating as the decor and carpets look tired. We don't tend to watch TV in the room but TV seemed very small by today's standards. Breakfast was OK but a little uninspired. Overall good value and very helpful staff.

We spent our Boxing Day there, so glad we did. The staff were excellent, very pleasent and helpful. The food was lovely and plentiful. The entertaintment was great, a young lady who sang beautifully and included everyone. Our room was very clean and welcoming, lovely huge bed. Bathroom was nice and clean with a bath and shower. The Hotel is very easy to find and has lots of parking. We will definitely be going back to see some of their theme nights. Execellent stay...Thank you

    « Another superb stay »

As we have come to expect of this hotel now the service was outstanding again on this recent stay. Room (on 1st floor) was spacious and very clean. Bathroom was spotless. Bed was exceptionally comfortable. There were plenty of in room tea / coffee supplies as well. The bar/lounge area was very busy when we arrived due to a wedding but staff were quick to ensure we had our latte's and were very polite and humorous. Breakfast was good but bacon does not last well under the heat lamps. The only criticism of this visit was the room temperature on arrival. It was very cold as the heating was on a minimum setting and took some time to come up to a reasonable sense of warmth. I know hotels don't know what time guests will arrive and want to conserve energy / max profit of room but once the room has been booked and paid for assuming the guest could arrive at earliest checkin and turning heating up at time would be good, that way if guests arrive later they arrive to a warm room. The atmosphere here is wonderful and whilst the décor, to some reviewers, may seem dated we actually really like it. Definitely recommend this hotel to other travellers

    « Business Trip »

I stayed at this hotel whilst on a training course. The hotel décor is a bit dated including the rooms, but they were very clean, warm and cosy. The hotel staff were very friendly and welcoming. The recreation facilities were disappointing, the pool is very small, the steam sauna is very dated and very very hot! I nearly burnt my leg on the pipe sticking out from underneath the moulded seat!! The changing rooms could also do with some tlc and wasn't impressed with the gym, very cramped! The location was ideal for the A12. Definitely a business stay and not a recreational stay.

« Christmas at Marks Tey »

We stayed over Christmas at the Hotel as a group of 9. The décor is a little dated but the rooms were clean and comfortable, the staff were attentive and accommodating and the food, and there was a lot of food, was really very good. Ideal for us as a family with ages varying from 18 - 80, the only real negative was the weak Wifi signal. but thanks to all at BWMT.

    « Clean and Comfortable »

This hotel, though the decor is dated, is very clean and comfortable. I was visiting friends nearby and the location was ideal. Even with the A12 very close, there was minimal noise. Staff were friendly and accommodating.

Very friendly and helpful staff, very nice room and very clean. The room and bathroom was very nicely decorated. Has some nice facilities to choose from too. All in all I would certainly stay there in there again.

« Get what you pay for.... »

Stayed here whilst attending a wedding up the road at The Barn. Hotel is in dire need of a makeover. Decor is very dated. Rooms decorated in 80s Laura Ashley style floral design. No mini bar, fridge or bottled water. No phone in room or ironing facilities (although you can get an ironing board and iron from reception to carry back if you want). Spare towels are hidden in the wardrobe, even though it was clearly a booking for two people. Bar is functional if a little soulless. Breakfast was very poor. On the first morning there was no one to show check us in or show us to a table. Never offered tea and coffee. Cooked breakfast was OK but it had clearly been out for a while. On the second morning, whilst we were shown to a table, we still weren't offered tea or coffee...and to make matters even worse, the bread that was there to be toasted was covered in mold!! A further word of advice, the hotel is clearly very popular for weddings, with one on each of the nights that we stayed there. It can therefore get a little "lively" in the evenings, both inside and outside the hotel. In short....it was pretty cheap, it was close to where we needed to get to....but its not somewhere we would return in its current state.

« ROOMS NEED A MAKEOVER AS SOON AS POSSIBLE »

This hotel 16 years ago was great and I know because my daughter's wedding was held there and we had a really fabulous time in a lovely hotel with a very good standard of accommodation. However my husband and I stayed here New Year's Eve as we were going to a party in Colchester and I was really very surprised as our room looked so very tired and worn out. Couldn't find extra towels as there was only one small one and one large one for the two of us. Apparently they hide spare towels in the wardrobe; just a strange way of doing things and then we couldn't turn the heated towel rail on and even the staff couldn't find the switch!! so a cold bathroom. Went down to the bar for a drink. The bar staff literally throw the empty bottles in a bin which makes one hell of a noise and as the bar was busy this happened about every couple of minutes so not a great start. We ordered a bowl of peanuts and they were stale. £6 approx for a glass of prosecco! It's obvious that the hotel needs to refurbish their bedrooms but to be fair they were a very reasonable price and the beds were very comfortable. The staff were very nice and the reception girls were so lovely and helpful which made up for a lot. So bit of budget stay.

« Value for money and comfortable stay »

Best western marks tey..... Spent less than 12 hours here after a local wedding but it did the job. Very comfortable bed in a reasonably well appointed room which is more modern than the exterior suggests. Didn't get chance to check out the bar or the leisure facilities. Breakfast was plentiful and reasonably diverse, although not of the highest standard. Poor black pudding which is always a good benchmark. Excellent value for money though.

« wedding guest at this hotel »

We went to a wedding at this hotel the food was loverly and surroundings but unfortunately guest had rooms broken into and bride and groom did not get the bridal suite although key was givern to them it already had outfits in for the next days wedding bridesmaid's. No manager on site to sort problems out. Would I stay here no sadly not because there security off who goes in and out of this hotel seems very poor.

    « Luxury hotel »

Ive stayed here a few times over the past few years, just at a getaway night with mates, hotel is beautiful. It has a pool & a gym, the rooms are dated and in need of tlc but still a good nights sleep. In a very quite peaceful area not too far from the local shops & takeaways. Looking forward to the next time.

    « Great value »

Stayed here for a night when we were in the area for a wedding. The hotel was perfectly nice inside if not a little dated. When we arrived there were two weddings on in the hotel which meant unfortunately we had to wait a really long time for our lunch at the bar which was a bit difficult with a hungry toddler and meant we were pushed for time to get ready to go to another wedding in a nearby village. Food was good value however. The only other problem was that in the evening there were some children running up and down the corridor who were obviously part of the wedding party. This ordinarily wouldn't have bothered me but we were back at the room early so my baby daughter could sleep. Aside from this is a good option if you need to stay in the local area.

    « christmas party night 2015 »

Stayed at this Hotel December 2015 for Xmas party night, Room although very clean is very dated abd tired and badly in need of revamping . One strip of wallpaper was completely missing, one chair was badly stained, and the heavy curtain at the window was frayed and torn. The meal we had was o.k but the roa potatoes were BURNT we told the waiter who promptly removed them from the plate with his fingers! he did bring us more. The D J played a lot of "head banging" music and not really a lot else, although he payed some Xmas songs. The Receptionist was very polite and helpful. The breakfast was good. Would stay again but probably in an upgraded room. Hotel needs money spent on it.

What a total dump - the bathroom was disgusting the plastic fake marble sink took 40 mins for the water to drain and the bath tap was jammed off, the shower head fell off ?? And the tiles had mould - sorry I'm sticking to premier inns at least you know what you're getting

    « Dated but fun »

I love this hotel! Stayed one night en route for business. On first impression thought I was checking in at Crossroads, mainly due to the dated look and slightly backwards checking in procedure (don't think technology has arrived here). Found receptionist to be nice but not super forthcoming with any info (ie where is the pool or the fact the restaurant was busy for dinner due to a xmas function.) was a bit strange to be asked how much I wish to authorise so we could charge to the room- especially as I had no idea what the food/ drink prices were. Not come across that before. Room was ok, rather dated but a nice throw back for me to the days when I worked in hotels- so I felt very at home there! Leisure club was good for a swim, steam and sauna- the guys working there were helpful. Had to eat early as only place to eat was the bar with limited space to sit, which filled up with the xmas party guests. Wendy was super helpful, fun and a huge asset to the hotel- had a great evening mainly due to her and a bucket load of red wine. Met some fun people and crashed the disco. Breakfast was ok- standard really. My colleague got put off as we were sat next to a light filled with cobwebs but I had a hangover so was not really in the mood to be critical. I wouldn't take any one here I was trying to impress but I had one of the most enjoyable stays I've had anywhere in ages- I think mainly due to the atmosphere and the fact the Merlot is very drinkable.

« Really in need of a make over »

We stayed at this hotel about 4 years ago, and we stayed here for 1 night after a evening event, the room and the hotel needs modernising badly, worn carpets in the room and hallway and stained carpets in the events room and the lights in the events room had so many cobwebs hanging in them l don't think they had been cleaned since l last stayed there!!. The bathroom was so dated the handle for the toilet came out of the wall every time you tried to flush and the water in the sink took ages to drain. The staff l encountered were all very pleasant and the food at breakfast was good. I must admit l would not stay here by choice again, certainly not for more than l night.

« Marks Tey Hotel should of booked a different day. »

Arrived on a Saturday night for a one night stay. Reception was efficient but not very welcoming. Room was clean and all you need for a comfortable nights stay. Bed well made. Went to book an evening meal to be told they had a function on so couldn't book a table for dinner. The bar was serving food but they only have 7 tables and all being used. The function was using the same bar and some points it took 15 minutes to get a drink. The two staff at the bar looked stressed and could not cope with the amount of people . We just felt sorry for the bar staff. On booking the room only 3 weeks before we should have been warned the restaurant would be closed. I would stay again but only after checking if dinner would be on the menu.

    « Needs vast improvement »

fortunately we had to stay in this hotel for only one night. The staff were very nice and we couldn't fault them but the hotel was dated and needs a complete refurb. The décor reminded me of Faulty towers TV show.

    « Enjoyed our night's stay here »

We were tired after a long journey and a swim in the warm water pool and a sauna revived us wonderfully. The room was very comfortable and quiet despite the hotel being full with a large wedding party. My only small niggle was that the breakfast foods were barely warm but then the restaurant was crowded and maybe a few more staff were needed to cope.

    3
« Looks good to start with - Then you start to notice things »

I arrived at the hotel at about 4 in the afternoon, it was dark, being December, and it looked beautiful lit up. I went inside and was awed by the charming reception area and fabulous Christmas tree. There was a lovely little bar area over to the left and I felt excited for my stay - which was only 2 nights as I was just there to visit some friends. My parents would be arriving the next day and would have their own separate double room. My room was on the ground floor, a long way away from the entrance and the sound of the wedding reception they had going on, which I was very grateful for at the time (I'll come back to that later). The room itself was pretty good. It was a double even though I had been told it would be a twin when I had booked over the phone, which is no big deal as I am only one person but it would have been nice to have been informed, The bed was extremely comfortable and neatly made. The carpet looked new and clean. That's about all the good things I can say. The wallpaper (which was torn and peeling) probably wouldn't have been all that fashionable when it was first installed back in the 80s/90s and was probably what contributed to the dank, musty smell. The curtains (which you had to hook rather than draw) were ripped and in places and the lining was totally gone. The dark wood furniture was not very fashionable either but the chest of draws was covered in rings from where people have stood glasses of milk and cups of tea. The wardrobe would not open properly as the hinges were completely gone on one side. There was also no toilet roll holder! The toilet roll was just hooked on to the metal frame so every time you went to pull a bit off to wipe yourself with, it would just fall on the floor. But the worst thing was the TV which did not work at all. The wires dangled dangerously over the radiator and there was no way that the cable for the aerial ever could have reached the outlet in the TV. I phoned reception and told them about it and they sent someone to have a look at it. The boy they sent agreed that it was broken. Then he left. That night I barely slept because (naively) I thought that the wedding reception was too far away to disturb me, What I didn't bargain on was the sound of people drunkenly returning to their rooms at 2am. The next morning, I informed reception again of the broken TV and they again said that they would send someone to sort it out. I then had breakfast which was delicious but much of it was gone by the time I got there. It is supposed to be from 6.30 to 10am - I got there at 9.15. The next day however it was much better but surely it should be of the same standard every day and if you are going to stop putting out food at 9am then maybe they shouldn't say it finishes at 10? Anyway my parents arrived later that day and I had a look at their room. Their wallpaper and curtains were as bad as mine and their carpet was threadbare! But at least they had a working TV and no dangerous wires. Later on, I went back to my room and lo and behold, the TV still wasn't fixed even though I had told them on more than one occasion that it was broken. I slept much better that night as I was so dog-tried from the night before. I never got to use the swimming pool or other facilities as I wasn't there long enough so I can't comment on them. I will say that the dining area was large and a nice space to eat your breakfast in. When I checked out, I mentioned the TV again and the friendly manager was apologetic and gave me money off my bill. Overall it would be unreasonable of me to give this place a poor rating as it does have it's perks, but given the choice I don't think I would stay there again.

    « Overnight Stay »

Stayed for the one night, rooms were very clean and comfortable, super comfy bed! The staff were very friendly and welcoming to the hotel. One thing I would point out is that it could do with major refurbishment as it's very old and needs modernising. However breakfast was superb with a wide variety to suit everyone's needs!

    « Average for a short stay »

Very mixed feelings about my stay here. It was only a one night stop over when there seemed to be a party happening? Check in was almost non excitant honestly I got more information from the night porter who made me a sandwich than the guy who checked me in. There was no information given or anything said about the kitchen being closed due to the party. I was just given my key told my room number and left to find my own way. The rooms are looking out dated and could do with some upgrades! The bed was unbelievably comfortable and the sheets soft however the rest of the furniture is old and warn, the bathroom while spotless (shower head not included) was again very outdated. Didn't have any breakfast as it was not included and had to leave early however my check out experience was great! Very talkative and made sure to explain each part of the check out while asking about my stay. Gave me lots of information about taxis and one was ordered and arrived very quickly! Mixed reviews. The room rate compared to others in the area was great however unless the service was improved and the rooms too I'm likely to stay somewhere I'd pay more for better..... Maybe while there are no parties and the hotel is staffed better it'll be an improved experience

I stayed for one night due to a meeting in Colchester. The room was clean and tidy. The bath was large and deep and there was plenty of hot water. The bed was firm and very comfortable. We did not eat at the hotel as we had an early start. Easy to find off A12.

    « Served a purpose »

I am reviewing this hotel based on the reasonable price that I paid for 2 nights rather than the 4 star rating that the hotel has. For what we paid it was OK, the bedrooms were of a reasonable size and clean and the beds were of a good size. Our room was very old fashion and was hoping to the promised an upgrade, being a Best Western Rewards member but the hotel was very busy due to a wedding. We were looking forward to eat in the Brasserie Restaurant as advertised on their website but was told on arrival that it was closed due to a wedding, we had to make do sitting at the bar which was crowded and managed to find 1 table by the projector screen which was not ideal, I could not see anywhere on their website stating that the restaurant can be closed at times due to functions, I do find it very unfair that other guests have to be inconvenienced in this way. Breakfast was OK but for £13.50 paid on the day, I have had a lot better. This hotel did deliver all the basics such as being clean and the staff were very good and friendly, so it was practical but just don't expect anything too exciting.

    « Lovely Stay »

******************** Before I say anything else being a Travel Agent myself I would like to say that I am giving a fair and reasonable review as i work within the industry and not leaving a 'spite' review because I had one minor bad experience (which i had none) like I have seen in a few of these reviews. ******************** We stayed at the BW Marks Tey mid November (2015) with my wife, as we were coming over for a friends wedding at a near by venue. We pulled into there generously sized car park (front and side of hotel) and parked up with ease. We were welcomed by a cheery female face and asked for our details and even asked if we had a preference over ground or first floor ( which is always good to ask if any clients have any mobility problems etc). We were advised where our room was and went on our way. The room (although a little dated) was brilliant! Had exactly what you need out of a room a bed, tv, bathroom (shower over bath), wardrobe, telephone, hairdryer and tea coffee making facilities. As i said the room it self is a little dated, but myself knowing hotels like these whom are open 24hrs 365 days a year it's really hard to get much renovation work done without closing part or all the hotel. We did not use the pool so I'm afraid i can't comment on that as well as the bar/restaurant. The staff at MT are brilliant very attentive and knowledgable of the area and personally would highly recommend the BW Marks Tey if in the area for attractions (such as Colchester Zoo, or even visiting friends and relatives. I hope this review is helpful as i do feel I've been as honest as I can.

    « Lovely »

We had a very nice stay at this hotel. The facilities were great, the swimming pool/steam room and sauna were enjoyed. The rooms were nice and the beds were comfy. We only had one problem, and that was with the shower. When trying to make the shower hot, the tap came off and sprayed water everywhere. We had to hold our hands over the running water to stop it from soaking the bathroom. Although this wasn't directly the hotels fault, the way they dealt with it could have been improved. I was stood with my hand over the tap for around 20 minutes before the hotel staff offered to take over (and it wasn't exactly cold water). They eventually offered us another room, after around an hour of us just sitting in the hotel room waiting to go out (we were planning on spending the day at colchester zoo, and arrived much later than what we wanted). And we received no sort of compensation for having to change rooms through no fault of our own. So in general a lovely hotel, with lovely staff, however if something goes wrong, don't expect them to react quickly!

    « Lovely reasonable stay »

Myself and my husband stayed at the Marks Tey Hotel on Saturday 14th November for a 40th Birthday do. The front desk staff were very friendly & helpful. The function room downstairs we had was lovely. We upgraded to an executive room which was ok. Had a standard sixze bed and had everything you needed in it. Can be quite noisy though as had a Wedding Party going on upstairs in another function room until early hours of the morning. The only downfall i can say was that the downstairs bar/lounge area was in a right mess with confetti everywhere and there was only 1 bar staff majority of the time with over 100 guests wanting to be served, alongside other residents too!

    « Really lovely... »

We stayed here a couple of weekends ago to be close toa party we were attending locally. We were pleasantly surprised, the hotel is wonderful. It doesn't look like much from the outside but when you reach the front and enter it reassures you that you're going to have a nice stay. The bed was comfy and plenty of space for clothes. Breakfast is exceptional. The only only one grumble I have is that the bathroom was a bit smelly (drains perhaps). Apart from that, a very good establishment.

    « Not 4 star »

I stayed here for 2 nights for a family wedding which was taking place at the hotel. The wedding was great and I cannot fault the food or the staff for the event but my 3 star rating is in regard to the rooms. I was able to get a disabled room for my elderly relative on check in last minute, but the fan above the shower was dirty as was the fridge and the carpet could have done with a good vacuum! On the last morning 2 other elderly and disabled relatives left their room for breakfast and thought it would be OK to leave their belongings in the room. It was only 9am and check out is at 11am. When they returned at 10am a cleaner was in the room and had bagged all their belongings and thrown out bottles of their drinks. This may seem trivial but they had paid for use of the room and needed to use it before check out and had every right to. The cleaner had no right to be in there at that time considering it was check out day and certainly should not have been bagging up their belongings. Breakfast was at an extra cost in our bookings. The food is good and you pay standard hotel prices. The breakfast includes cooked food and continental. WiFi is free. The train station is only a 10 minute walk away.

Very comfortable and clean room, excellent buffet breakfast, very good evening menu, good selection of lite bites at the bar area, indoor pool, good service, ample off road parking to the front and side. Close to A12/A120 for good access to the local area.

    « Ok but not a 4* hotel »

Had to find somewhere quickly and this place was on offer at £52 for the night. The place looks great on the outside in the dark. In daylight it looks awful. Peeling and dirty paint work. Unkempt grounds. The room was ok. The furniture and decor was tired and dated and there was a sweet wrapper left on the floor. There was weird curtains which you couldn't open or shut, just hook up so they have a swag effect. Very 80's. The bathroom was clean but had the horrible static shower head. I hate hotels that have this type of shower. The bed was just a double, wasn't particularly comfy and the pillows were flat. The to was in the corner of the room, not oppose the bed, so made viewing difficult. The staff I spoke to were friendly and helpful. There was a wedding reception going on when we got there so didn't use the bar. This place would be nice if it was redecorated and modernised both inside and out.

My mum and me booked a disable room for two nights. Arrived at 1.50pm to be told our room wasn't ready. Sent to the bar to wait. I returned to reception to see if we could get a complimentary tea and coffee but no we wasn't allowed. We waited an hour for our. Asked where the swimming pool was to be told its closed for cleaning. Breakfast Monday morning was lovely. Worth ordering poached egg. Breakfast this morning wasn't as good. The room 111. Lovely big size. Could fit my mums scooter in it. It was a wet room but there was no where to put your shampoo and shower gel unless you get elastic arms and could reach the shelf. Floor was sloppy wet too We both didn't sleep well as the beds were to soft. My quilt was grey looked over washed and grubby against white sheets. Also this room is near A12 travel noise all night long. Could only one cup of tea coffee as you only got 4milks no biscuits either. We had a sandwich in the bar with a coffee and tea. Had a shock when we checked as the tea and coffee cost £3.00 each. Never paid that much for one tea bag and hot water. It's not central London. Only two disabled carparking space. Which are not clearly marked and are side wards on to the hotel. Sorry to say we won't be returning

« Outdated to say the least »

Let's start with the room, a polite way of putting it would be retro, another way of putting it would be run down with decor from the 1970's. This hotel is in desperate need of a refit because it's seriously needs bringing up to date. On a lighter note the room was clean and the staff were friendly, The drinks are overpriced and service at the bar is appalling, there should be two people running the bar because the woman running it clearly can not cope and leaves the bar unattended for long periods of time, when I'm at a hotel I don't want to have to wait 20-30 minutes for a drink or to make a food order because the person behind the bar has disappeared or is round the back playing on their phone. The buffet style breakfast was very good but I will not be returning to this rundown hotel because I'm not particularly fond of the 1970s and when I'm staying away from home I expect a certain level of service.

« Disappointing appearance of hotel and rooms »

We booked for one night but was surprised at how shabby the interior of the hotel and rooms were. The hall carpets had holes in and some holes were patched up with gaffer tape. The rooms smelt damp and musty and we had to change rooms because of the smell. The bedding also felt damp. There were noises all night sounding like someone was moving trollies around. We would not book here again.

    « Fawlty Towers »

This hotel looked lovely on the website and somehow had a good rating so I booked the executive room as we wanted the best type of room. We later found out that there is hardly any difference between a standard and executive room other than a fridge and air con and some bottled water although the site shows a separate dining area for one of the rooms on the site I booked. The room had a very musty smell and it is just terribly dated and looks like it hasn't been upgraded since the 70's. The sink had cracks in it, the toilet roll holder didn't have the inserts that hold the toilet roll on so they were just hung off the end of the bracket. The tv continued to lose signal and went blank. The carpet, walls and curtains had some stains on them which I'd rather not know about. The tap tops were cracked. All in all nothing like the pictures on the site. I have no idea how this could ever be classed as a 4 star hotel???? Would not stay here again. I will say the bed was comfortable other than a pube on one of the pillows! Breakfast was basic buffet style and the beans were actually cold and looked like they had sat there for a long time.

« Clean communal areas but the rest was very shabby and over-priced. »

Very old, shabby and out-dated decor outside of the main reception area. The whole place had a smell of disinfectant. Close to the A12 which was handy but there is constant traffic noise all night. The carpet outside our room was worn so they had used gaffer tape to stop anyone tripping. The Restaurant was satisfactory but not amazing. I sent my (med) steak back because it was raw and still chilled in the middle.I don't mind rare but not raw. By the time they had re-cooked the same piece of meat my husband had finished his. Breakfast was plentiful and ok quality. Pool ok. Overall too expensive for what we got.

    « Surprisingly good lunch »

I had to meet someone for lunch close to the A12 we picked the hotel. We were seated in the lounge as the only people although it was early. Honestly I expected a poor lunch. What I got was a really pleasant surprise. Nice starters and two well cooked mains. Friendly staff very nice. I'd eat there again.

    « A very enjoyable stay »

My wife and I stayed here for two nights (Thursday & Friday 22 & 23 October). Although we had no trouble finding the hotel it was no thanks to our sat nav which seemed to want to send us further east towards Colchester. I've subsequently checked and the post code is specific to the hotel so the problem presumably lies with our sat nav. Anyway ? that's not the hotel's fault. It's actually very conveniently located near to the A12 with a very large car park. Friendly desk staff - in fact all the staff we encountered during our stay were smilingly helpful. As usual we had a twin room. This one (no. 154) had a single bed and a much larger ¾ bed (it might even have been a smallish double) ? very comfortable for one of us (me!). The room was reasonably sized and clean (although my wife reported a slight musty smell in one corner of the room ? she has a much keener sense of smell than I). Just one negative ? the wall mounted flat screen TV should be bigger. Why do some hotels penny-pinch when it comes to TVs? In the grand scheme of things the cost of a larger set is not that significant. Also it was mounted in one corner of the room making viewing difficult from one of the beds (my wife's!). The bathroom was nicely fitted and very clean. The shower was excellent. But the heated towel rail didn't work. We couldn't see any way to switch it on or off and as the electric cable leading to it bore a label indicating it had last been checked in 2006 we suspect it no longer functions. There was no room safe although the room directory told us there should be. Breakfast is really very good. A good sized buffet including full English (and alternative egg styles can be ordered), breads, pastries, fresh fruits, cereals etc. It all looked extremely appetising (and tasted good). I was almost tempted to sample the black pudding and sausages, they looked so appealing but I did manage to resist. I've seen better breakfast buffets but usually only in much higher priced hotels. No noise either internal or external. A thoroughly enjoyable stay. We wouldn't hesitate to choose it again if we had occasion to revisit Colchester.

    « Daughters Wedding »

We had our daughters wedding reception here on Saturday 17th October 2015, and stayed the previous night to meet friends and family that were also staying. The whole experience of dealing with this hotel was first rate, right from the early stages of the booking, the planning (with many, many changes) and through to the day itself!! The management and staff could not have done any more to make this event more enjoyable - nothing was too much trouble for anyone at any level to help make this an occasion to remember, and we cannot thank them enough for their attention to detail and the execution of the reception, wedding breakfast, evening buffet, entertainment etc. First Class all the way!!!

« Nice hotel, just a couple of points »

After a very long drive down from Manchester we found the hotel very easily. We were checked in efficiently by some very welcoming receptionists. Upon enquirering about a possible room upgrade as it was a special occasion we were handled with very well & duely were upgraded too an Executive Room. The room was presented very well and clean, a few tatty bits in places, like the curtain and some of the decor, but nothing that was of any impact. We did have too ask for our complimentary bath robes though to be brought up to the room, but no issue and again handles very efficiently by the staff. We did try the leisure club out and it was clean and again very helpful staff. We enjoyed a nice swim and the sauna to relax. The deal I had booked was through Superbreak and included dinner on the first night. We booked a dinner reservation upon check-in and went down and had a drink at the bar before having our meal. I purposely asked the waiter at this point if we had any limitations with having a dinner inclusive rate, as I know how these things work having done this type of break before. I was advised that we had a choice of three courses and could mix & match the a la carte menu and bar menu, only having to pay a supplement of £5 if we wanted the steak. So without hesitation we made our selections. The food was very nice, nothing amazing, but still very good and enjoyable. What wasn't particularly enjoyable was the drunk woman on a table of six near us who proceeded to crawl, (yes, I said crawl!), around the restaurant floor in an attempt to entertain her young grandson, being loud, crass, (there was mention of having no knickers on?), and making a fool of herself and the people she was sat with. Whilst somewhat amusing, definitely not conducive too a romantic meal?! A lack of gentle background music & bright lighting also detracted from a nice ambience. Breakfast in the same restaurant was very good however, with a wide selection, you'd struggle to go hungry. Nice sausages and black pudding! So we enjoyed the rest of our two night stay and managed to dodge the procession of weddings that seemed too be taking over the rest of the hotel. It was upon check-out that I was presented with a rather high bill that took me by complete surprise. The hotel was going to charge me £10.95 for dinner? I naturally queried this. Apparently, I should have been advised that as a guest with dinner inclusive I had a limit of £21pp too spend in the restaurant! I pointed out that I had specifically asked regarding this was not given this information at all. The polite receptionist apologised & reduced the bill accordingly with no bother. I did point out that the waiters need this addressing though in some sort of training too avoid future embarrassment for customers and the hotel. In summary, this was a fine hotel that did just the job for our stay with polite & welcoming staff.

Thoroughly enjoyable stay. Highly recommended in every aspect. Great room, lovely atmosphere, helpful staff, plenty of parking, convenient to motorway. Perfect for business or pleasure. Definitely returning whenever we're in the area.

« Enjoyable experience in every department! »

Stayed here recently as part of a coach party. We had a lovely big room on the ground floor, with two chairs, table, etc., the bathroom was very roomy (plenty of "toilet bag "space!!). It was a bit noisy with the window open but there was a really good fan in the room which helped when the window was closed. The heated towel rail wasn't working and we reported this one evening - when we returned from a visit the next day it had been put right. We found all the staff to be extremely helpful, the meals in the restaurant were most enjoyable - the staff were very flexible over any changes you might want from the menu - and the service was good and pleasant. We had a discount on wine whilst we were there which helped the selection each evening!. All in all it was a very relaxing and enjoyable visit - having read some of the reviews before we arrived we were a bit apprehensive but really cannot fault our visit here.

    « Below standard »

We stayed for one night and although the rest of the hotel was lovely we found that our room was 'tired', broken wiring on the lamp plug, wallpaper falling off the wall, dodgy connection on the heated towel rail and the carpet was thread bare, not at all what i would expect from a 4* hotel; the hotel did offer to upgrade us on our next visit but it is unlikely we will go back there again (a partial refund would have been better) having said that breakfast was great, plenty of variety and good choice and the spa facilities were very enjoyable.

« An extremely enjoyable experience! »

A friend and I went to Marks Tey Hotel recently for afternoon tea - what an experience it was! The staff were SO friendly, kind and accommodating - top class service, nothing was too much trouble. I had not realised we would have three courses! The starter of egg mayonnaise with crayfish and smoked salmon was delicious. Then came the assortment of sandwiches, brown and white bread and four different fillings, all very nice. The scones were fresh (and huge) and were really yummy with plenty of cream and jam. We struggled with the assortment of 4 lovely cakes but made room for the delicious trifle to finish. Loads of tea or coffee and offers of hot water. It was a real surprise and a delightful treat. The hotel and restaurant were clean and staff all really lovely. I will certainly be going back for more!!

« We were looked after so well »

We had a great 7 day stay at this hotel. Stacey at the front desk was so friendly and helpful. Our room was very clean and comfortable and the pool was a delight to use. We had dinner and room service and both were of a high standard. Even though there were a couple of weddings during our stay we were not troubled by noise at all. And we loved the wascally wabbits outside our window each day.

« Should be knocked down... »

Absolutely terrible stay, room is tired and dilapidated, it also had a distinct smell of damp or pee...the bathroom was also falling to pieces and the fan did not work. There was a wedding and a 50th party going on simultaneously, upon returning from visiting family with our sleeping toddler, we were heckled rudely by drunk guests smoking outside the front entrance to hotel which madly the hotel have made the designated smoking area. We purposefully asked for a quiet room, but the guests were shouting up and down the hallways at 230am...the hotel did nothing to manage this. Needless to say we did not try breakfast. As others have said avoid like the plague!!

« 'The Mad Chefs Tea Party' »

My wife and I wanted to treat her brother and his wife to 'afternoon tea', and found The Best Western Hotel at Marks Tey offered a menu that attracted our tummies! We booked a table for 4 around 1.30pm and were taken to a perfect position where we could enjoy looking out the large windows. The restaurant had around 20 tables, but only two were occupied, allowing a quiet afternoon, if lacking atmosphere. ( we appreciated the absence of piped background music!). The three tiered stand displayed the finger sandwiches, assorted cakes, and scones with jam. The tea pot sat next to the box of 6 assorted teas, including walnut and chocolate flavours. The waitress left us to enjoy the fayre, and we soon consumed the crayfish and salmon starter. Defusers allowed us to try a few speciality teas but by now the water was no longer hot, and the waitress had dissapeared. At this point, we were shocked to hear shouting and a string of 4 letter expletives echoing from the kitchen.....the chef was either very angry or had dropped our trifles, because they never arrived! At this part of the afternoon tea, we decided to settle up before the mad hatter appeared! The food was okay but not outstanding, the 2nd cuppa was warm, and the customer service could have been more attentative as only 6 customers were present! At least my brother in law saw the funny side! We might try somewhere else next time, perhaps .......'Faulty Towers Teatime!'

    « Fab fitness facilities »

The fitness facilities are great, lovely pool, sauna and steam room and well equipped gym. However it is the gym staff that make it, all so friendly and professional, especially Tom. Nothing is too much trouble and always a smile.
