"Very central, enjoyed our stay"

5
John H, Stoke-on-Trent, United Kingdom 03/09/2020

Stayed one night in the very centre of Carlisle. Cathedral a couple of minutes away and the Castle five minute walk away. Stayed in a room overlooking the market place - high ceilings, comfortable. May well return.

"Was trendy.....75 years ago"

1
DidimD, Great Malvern, United Kingdom 28/08/2020

I booked a twin room at short notice for a single overnight stay. I've got to say, the room I stayed in was the worst room I've ever been in. It was clean and the bedding was fresh, but the actual room itself looks like it hasn't been modernised since AT LEAST 1970 !!! There was some old radiogramme thing between the two beds, at the back of which was a birds nest of dodgy looking wiring. The furniture was old, very very very old. The bathroom was horrible, so horrible in fact that this is the first hotel I've ever stayed in where I didn't have a shower. The grout around the bath was either mouldy or missing, the shower curtain was dirty. I appreciate that it's tough during Covid for hotels but this place is just utter rubbish. The building itself is beautiful and the reception and hallways all nicely decorated, but that's it. The rest of the place is dirty and falling apart. I opted for the breakfast and wish I hadn't, grey watery mushrooms, slightly warmed up tomatoe meant I left most of it and stopped at Tebay for some proper food on the way back down the M6. I'm sorry Crown and Mitre, staying there was horrible.

"It should be named The Seagull Palace."

1
147PatrickR, Airdrie, United Kingdom 14/08/2020

Firstly the staff were totally disinterested in myself and friend, I do not think we had one conversation of more that 6 syllables in any interaction, we thought we were a distraction. Secondly, only a couple of hours of snatched sleep due to the horrendous noise from seagulls, from dusk to dawn the noise was relentless. Lastly, it was not value for money £63 for very very limited facilities and a sleepless night. This was a double visit...First and Last

"Using the virus for a excuse for bad service and low standards"

1
jrt19632014, Paisley, United Kingdom 30/07/2020

We have stayed in this hotel twice before but on this occasion we were very disappointed by the low standard of care for the rooms and the very poor food being served . All Covid safety precautions were in place and we were happy to abide by these rules but to run the hotel in a sub standard manner while charging full rates is unexceptable, service with a attitude that we were a inconvenience to the staff The cleanliness of the room fell far short of our expectations given we had paid for a executive suite the room was dirty the sofa was badly stained, the windows were covered in cobwebs ,the shower controls where broken and the toilet seat was completely off its fixings. These items are easily identifiable when the room is being cleaned and not difficult to fix/repair. We had dinner in the hotel the food had obviously been cooked and poorly reheated the lounge bar was tired and very un-welcoming to the extent that the one member of staff behind the screened bar told us that we could not have the TV changed as she had been instructed by her management , there was only us two in the lounge! Our main disappointment was in the staff response when we reported our issues at the reception the duty manager (Tom) was called to assist. After we explained our concerns with our suite ,he advised that he would inspect the room to check and report back . We waited in reception for over 30mins on his return ,he never returned even asking reception for a update. We returned to collect our vehicle from the carpark to be met with a sheepish duty manager opening the security gate for us. We spoke to him he agreed that the room was in fact sub standard for the £140 rate charged but offered nothing not even a apology instead said that this condition was due to the virus not the lack of cleanliness or duty of care with the rooms. If the hotel cannot function as a hotel due to the virus then it should not be trading and certainly charging the rates they are. This hotel is being run as a truck stop for working men

it was clean, good for the dog, central, had parking, good food and got a welcome drink and paid a very fair price. This is a cracking hotel really, can not complain at these prices (under £100 a night with a dog) it was ultra clean and very comfy.

"Dirty, Old, Broken, Avoid"

1
Paul_D_Hill, Shepperton, United Kingdom 11/07/2020

The staff were incredibly polite and helpful, and if the review was based solely on them it would be 5 stars. However, I have never seen a more run down hotel. The hotel looks to have been renovated in the 80s and zero money has been spent since on it's upkeep. Everything is broken and in need of a good clean. The seats in the bar are about 40 years old with the padding completely gone. The disabled ramp leading the to car park looks temporary but you can tell has been there for many years. The room was disgusting. The toilet bowl cracked. The hand soap dirty from whoever had used it before. Black mould on the windows. The lift looks like a death trap and dirty. This was once a grand hotel and with only very little money to be spent could be one the of the best hotels in the country.

TheSausageRoll, East Kilbride, United Kingdom 11/03/2020

Great old style hotel that almost takes you back in time. The rooms are comfortable, albeit not lavishly furnished. I ate in the bar & the food was spot on, and you can order a meal up until 10pm. Buffet breakfast was available, with an abundance of staff should you have any additional requirements. The Crown & Mitre is centrally located, so ideal if travelling on business or leisure. Happy to reccommend this hotel to future visitors to Carlisle.

"Murder mystery night"

My wife and some friends recently visited for the hotels murder mystery night..... cost was £32.50 per person with a 3 course meal included! It was a brilliant night..... food was good but the highlight was the team acting out the murder mystery... funny but intriguing. Thoroughly recommend this night.... whens the next one?

Stayed herte Saturday night while having a night out in Carlisle. Staff all very friendly and looked after you well. Room could do with a bit of moderisation and more modern decor, as could bar. Bed was comfertable and the place was clean.

"Beautiful hotel"

merlot37, Carlisle, United Kingdom 23/02/2020

Stayed last minute booking.com was showing less price on the app. They would not price compare had to book through Booking.Com at desk . We then upgraded t ok the bridal suite room was beautiful could not fault it . After we checked in we noticed the next check in guest was given complimentary glass of wine we were not offered had to ask this was disappointing. Would stay again, did think slightly over priced.

"Really good stay "

5
ChrisTheGingerOne, Reading, United Kingdom 22/02/2020

A booking was made directly with the hotel. During the booking phase the staff were very helpful and eager to meet our needs. They had all the parking allocated on our arrival exactly as they had promised. The check in process was simple and quick given the size of the party with the room keys named in envelopes waiting for us. 46 rooms were occupied for a week and as the organiser of our trip I did not hear one single bit of negative feedback in regards to the hotel from any of our party. All in all I was very impressed with hotel and it's staff.

"Not worth the money."

I had high hopes for this hotel due to the price point but sadly the room was tiny and dirty and the bathroom was filthy with hairs everywhere. Walls were paper thin so I could hear everything in the next room.

"Great service, nice location, Could look better"

4
User 04/02/2020

Very handy location with this hotel, bang smack in middle of city centre of Carlisle. Good distance from numerous shops, bars and restaurants. Visited Carlisle for a couple nights stay and although a few hiccups with room - wasn't an entirely bad pexperience. Bar food was lovely as were the drinks (although pricey, cheaper in town) and the service off one young Scottish barmaid was great, very friendly, recommended things to do in Carlisle, brought our drinks over to us each time despite how busy she looked and was a charming member of staff, as were the others we met across the couple days - service with a smile, food recommendations and fun to chat with overall. Breakfast is decent enough, simple buffet style, can't complain it's basic. Downside I felt to this hotel, despite its stunning decor in reception and around out with the rooms - the rooms are a tad dated and slightly bring the hotels look down. Smelt slightly musty and looked rather old - a revamp would do the place a world of good. It is only a place to put your head down but still it IS what you pay for in a hotel. Bar decor could be a bit better, restaurant and bar look miles apart in interior quality.

Our third visit to this hotel/coaching inn. The food is as good as ever, though service at dinner is a tad slow. The room was still of a good size, 2 comfortable armchairs, a table and flat-screen TV. Very comfortable beds, best of many we've experienced in the U.K.Shower over bath awkward as sides of bath very high and tricky to exit. Perfectly placed for access to local buildings, Cathedral, castle, museum exit roads, not to mention large M & S.

It's the 2nd time we've been and we were delighted again with the food, service, cleanliness etc. Lovely people, excellent menu selection including lots of GF stuff. Salads are particularly yummy with lots of fruit in them too. Highly recommend.

"Great value stay"

5
Cumbriaman, cockermouth 21/12/2019

I stayed on black eye friday meeting work colleagues in the city for drinks. I parked in the rear courtyard and checked into my room. The room was fine with everything you would expect, although it was probably a bit on the small side if I hadn't been on my own. The function rooms, staircases and reception are very grand and the rear function room was nicely decorated for Christmas parties. The breakfast was lovely and overall a very good value stay.

"Room size"

3
basher43, Loch Lomond 17/12/2019

When you book this hotel make sure you check what room you are getting I booked a double room which to me means a double bed 4'6” but it was a small 4' bed and the room was really small I went and complained but the duty manager said that I had booked a small double which was wrong as they don't advertise a small double they did say they would upgrade me for an extra £40 per night it's a shame as it's has put me off going back and I didn't think the hotel staff did enough to sort the problem out

"Need better wine"

2
JackieK557, Aulnay, France 13/12/2019

Christmas party. No wine list available. Choice of c4 white wines, Choose Sauvignon Blanc, get a mixed wine (?!?) that really tastes (not great). Need to consider getting a decent selection (or at least ONE decent white wine in by the bottle)

"Overnight stay for special birthday (4 rooms) mine "executive single'"

3
User 10/12/2019

Fire alarm sounded in middle of night for few seconds, one of the party phoned reception and was told false alarm she then informed the rest of the party herself. No explanation or even a mention of it from staff. Had shower next morning and the water was up to my ankles , upon investigation I discovered the plug hole was blocked with hair( disgusting! and not mine!) and if and the plug were filthy.. On a more positive note, the breakfast was superb!

"Mould black as coal"

User 10/12/2019

Stayed for a conference with work... decided to have a soak... decided against it pretty quickly... mould yak... looks like a very grand hotel but it's very much in need of TLC in the rooms. Plus the rate they charged us for the night was 30 quid more than other guests... cashing in on work booking

Family get together. We always chose this hotel for its central location to ammenities. Always a lovely welcome from reception who are always accommodating. Lovely family room(308), there was 5 of us. Clean, warm, cosy, plenty of towels, toiletries, tea/coffee etc. Ate in bar, which was busy, but was informed from staff it may be a short wait due to functions. Not a problem. Bar staff friendly and chatty. Breakfast in a beautiful room with plenty of choice, although coffee could be better. Yes the hotel could do with some TLC but it is beautiful and we will be returning again soon. Phone hotel direct for better value. Thank you to ALL staff for job well done.

"Tired old hotel"

3
Scarrface, Ashington, United Kingdom 06/12/2019

The outside of the hotel looks very grand and is ideally situated in the centre of the city. The car park is difficult to find and very small. You have to ring a bell for staff to come and open the gates. I waited for 10 minutes one evening. Cars are double parked and you have to leave your keys in reception if you are parked in front of someone. Bizarre and frustrating if you need to make an early start. My room was in the annexe and I wasn't told the lift was out of order when checking in. Three flights of stairs with luggage was not fun. I arrived on the Monday and left on the Friday and the lift was still out of action. Rooms are tired, carpets are threadbare and the bath was pitted and had seen better days. Beware the clinging nylon shower curtain! Evening meals are adequate although we waited an hour on the Tuesday evening for our food to arrive. Breakfast is nothing special and speciality coffee e.g. latte is extra although I wasn't told this until day 3. In the hotel's favour, staff are pleasant and try to help. This hotel could be fabulous if there was major investment and a complete refurbishment.

"Good location but very tired"

3
sarahc51, Richmond-upon-Thames, United Kingdom 03/12/2019

We stayed here for a long weekend, the hotel was in a good location and downstairs was lovely, however our room was very very tired. The bed were comfy, but the room had a very funny smell as did the bathroom and there was some quite big stains on the bed throws (not the duvet.) The breakfast was tasty but there wasn't that much of everything and the fire alarm went off at 2 in the morning. This all sounds really negative, there were good points, but the hotel just needs some TLC!

"Very disappointing experience but great location for centre"

3
Lisa L, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 01/12/2019

I booked here to be in the centre of town. We were going to an event at the Sands Centre so it is great for that - 5 to 10 mins walk and in middle of all shops. Reception staff were friendly and helpful and one lady on arrival for making sure we knew where we were going. The bar man at night very unfriendly. Our room was a standard twin and was up in the attics essentially. However as we got up there they were in the midst of decorating and whilst it was clean and tidy it was just unwelcoming especially given the Reception staff hadn't mentioned it. And again I come back to just being informed before arrival so you can decide if you want to move or not. The room was OK. Quite cosy. No fridge. But the bathroom just smelled so not inviting - I had been looking forward to a bath! Through the night I got exceptionally itchy and had to take the duvet out - very poor quality duvet and when I looked in the morning was very badly stained - horrid. Bedding seriously needs an upgrade. Not a good nights sleep at all. The fire alarm also went off at 2am which happens but when we went downstairs we were looked at and spoken at like what were we doing! The building itself on whole is lovely and I get they are doing upgrades but maybe not put people in those rooms while upgrading?? We decided to not have breakfast even though paid for purely on our first impression. A very expensive disappointing night.

We stayed overnight at this hotel and the staff could not have been any more friendly. The hotel is gorgeous and the location was absolutely perfect for our sightseeing and shopping trip. We will definatly be back to stay here again soon

"Ageing beauty"

4
Cornopean, London, United Kingdom 27/11/2019

Stayed one night on business, did not use car park. Edwardian ambience definitely a step up from usual Premier Inn / Holiday Inn Express etc. Room was clean, warm and plenty of room for one. Bar looked busy but I wanted room service, which was ordered at the bar, with a query phoned down to the kitchen. The same member of staff delivered the meal to my door very quickly, and the tray vanished from the corridor before I was up the next morning. Breakfast had plenty of continental choice with helpful staff in an amazing room, although I noted all pastries had been eaten (it was late). On the down side, the swimming pool was closed without any mention on check-in (I hadn't planned to use it anyway), and front desk staff could have been more polished in organisation - in some places, there is a clear flow of who is responsible for each person, whereas here it was a little more chaotic, not helped by the tiny area of actual desk. Also lacked stocks of commonly-forgotten toiletries. Actual staff interaction was polite and prompt, just needed more thought as to who would interact with each customer and where, and also avoiding walking around dealing with other matters while customers were waiting at the desk - a quick acknowledgement goes a long way. I will likely be in Carlisle again a couple of times next year on business, and for its combination of price, service, and location, I plan to stay here again.

"Not the best"

3
User 26/11/2019

Stayed here as it was close to everything we needed as my wife was graduating down the road at the cathedral. Building is nice enough however the decor in the room was rather dated, we ordered room service to get a member of staff sighing about having to take our order when it arrived we listened to the members of staff complaining about having to deliver the order at the door. Reception desk staff however can not be faulted as they where polite and helpful.

"Night away for wife's birthday"

4
User 19/11/2019

We wanted to take a short trip away and my wife had not been to Carlisle for a long time so we checked out some hotels and settled on the Crown & Mitre as offering the best deal. We used Satnav to get us there but found a number of nearby street closures prevented us getting to the hotel. In the end we rang reception and the girl there talked us in and did an excellent job. The hotel was as central as you could possibly be and was ideally placed for looking around the city centre. There was no noise at night, the breakfast was excellent, free parking on site (a real bonus in a city centre) and overall the hotel really fit the bill. We would definitely stay there again if we visit Carlisle.

Mark R, Glasgow, United Kingdom 09/11/2019

I was torn between two and three out of five. Two and a half is about right. It's not the most expensive so my expectation wasn't that high. The hotel is right in the centre of the town. The negatives of that outweigh any good. The car park at back of the hotel was a nightmare to find. The main issue however with being in the centre is town is the noise. We were In they annex, never good for me. The noise was bad. Their was a boxing competition on in one of the main conference/hired rooms, so it was really noisy at end of the night, around 12am to about 1am. Then all the clubs coming out. That went on to about 2.30am and I mean loud. Then a shop alarm went of around 3am for close to an hour. So staying in the centre is a no go. The rooms are very very dated. However clean and nice comfy bedding and bed, towels etc. The main areas are clean but honestly need some smelly things, as it has a stale smell in all the reception areas. Just some Incense bottles dotted around would make a huge difference. The photos of the pool are unrecognisably flattering. The breakfast was actually ok , had better had a lot worse and the choice was very good. For me as most tired hotels, the staff are never ever in the hospitality industry, they have jobs in hotels, that's the difference. It's just a job to the staff. I would say all of them. They weren't rude or anything. They are just workers who just happen to work in a hotel, so have no real hospitality skills whatsoever. If they have its minimum and minimum training. They were efficient, ish. Over all not great, but not the worst. It could be stunning, but I understand it may not be worth spending the money it needs to make it that way, as it's a huge place and it would take a lot of time and money to get it that way. Maybe just a bit at a time is the best possible way forward for such a large place that has some stunning features.

"Lovely staff great old building "

4
User 08/11/2019

Very back in time ( the building shows this ) and staff very polite especially reception and the breakfast team. I had a twin room for one and a decent bathroom. It was very quiet and had an excellent sleep. It not a modernised hotel and probably needs it but I think the service makes up for that. I had a lovely prawn sandwich in the bar but eat out at one of the many excellent Thai restaurant in the evening. Breakfast excellent . Certainly a better overall experience than the other hotels I normally stay in here and they even asked me how my stay was ! So many hotels don't ! I would stay here again.

I swim at the Crown and Mitre Hotel daily. All staff are very friendly and helpful in particular Linda who cleans the pool and Kerry on reception, for one so young Kerry is very helpful, has a sunny disposition and is polite.

This hotel is beautiful inside and the staff are all very nice and friendly. There is a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The rooms are well appointed, we had two rooms a standard double which is very comfortable and a superior which is spacious and modern.

We stayed at the crown and mitre for 3 nights! The food was absoulutly amazing both breakfast and evening meal! The swimming pool and hot tub were both very clean and most of our stay we had them to ourselves. The hotel itself is really old and could do with some refurbishment here and there but it is clean and cleaning staff attended our room daily! Overall we really enjoyed our stay the hotel is right in the city centre its literally on the doorstep.would highly recommend this hotel.

"Oh this poor old place!"

3
108maxinec, Tewkesbury, United Kingdom 06/11/2019

It's always a terrible, terrible shame when you see a beautiful historic amenity fall into neglect. But that's what is happening to the poor old Crown & Mitre. Its two years since I was last here, and in that time it's got even tattier and more threadbare than it was back then. The carpets are literally threadbare in a lot of places, particularly on staircases, which is potentially dangerous as well as scrufffy. The rooms are very dated, and some are distincly odd in configuration, even in the "updated, modern" annex - our room has a bathroom so small it had to have the sink located in the main bedroom area, away from the loo, and with nowhere to put any hooks to hang a towel on. Everything just looks old and scruffy, with paint flaking off and outdated bedroom/bathroom decor. The main building is so wonderful, with its high ceilings and lovely staircase and characterful rooms. But the management here are not spending the money on it that it is so desperately in need of, to keep it from continuing to deteriorate, and it makes me so sad. The staff are very friendly and helpful, except for one of the receptionists, an older lady, who refused to give me a refund on my paid-for breakfasts when I became too ill to eat them. She was determined to "stick to policy" of non-refundable, and grudgingly said she "could ask if I wanted her to" but clearly had no desire to do so. I gave up. I found her desperately unhelpful. She literally shrugged at me and that was it. I thought that was appalling. We had dinner in the bar the first night, and were told that although the TV was on, we couldn't have the sound on because the barman "wasn't allowed" to turn off the music in there, despite the fact that there were just two other people in there who cared about the music even less than we did. We were left wondering what the point of having the tv was, in there. In our room, we had to get a new remote for the tv as the batteries were completely flat. The second night, we had dinner in the restaurant, and the food was very average. My partner was asked if he wanted bread, and they gave him one miniscule slice of what looked like it had been a chiabatta. He had to ask for more bread and again was given one more tiny slice. It was a bit pathetic really. Clearly this place was once magnificent. But it has over time become a very low-budget option, where everything is mediocre at best. Everything feels a bit cheap. The worst of it is that the longer the neglect of this once glorious place goes on, the less likely it will ever be, to be returned to its original glory. It needs a big fat cheque book, not least of which could go to providing an electronic back gate so people can come and go without the poor old staff having to traipse out repeatedly, sometimes in horrible weather, to keep unlocking the manually operated gate, to let guests in and out. If you want quality, look elsewhere. If you just want a bed for the night in the city and you don't mind a hotel that's dated and a bit scruffy, this will meet your needs. This place has massive potential to become what it deserves to be - a four or five star swanky hotel, a real assset to Carlisle, where quality is the primary driver. In it's current budget-focussed, ever-declining state, it runs the very real risk of eventually becoming the city's saddest white elephant. It is an absolute crying shame.

Compupters were down when i went to check in, but the lovely receptionist allowed me to leave my luggage while i went to do some shopping for a while. When i got to the room it was pleasant enough but rather dated in decor, there was only a plastic drinking container so i tried to use the in room phone to ring reception but it wasnt working. The room was freezing when i can back later after my evening out and just a warning, the church bells start very early in the morning, although not the hotels fault, they are very noisy! Breakfast was excellent, great choice and plenty of it.

On my second night after a long day working I came back to find my room was unlocked and open on the latch not locked as i obviously left it in the morning. I am not stupid enough to leave valuables in the room and nothing was missing but that is not the point. Anyone can walk in the front doors of this hotel which is on the main shopping precinct so there is n

"Cold room / date and rude staff"

I stayed at the Crown & Mitre for one night whilst on business. The room was tiny, and resembled a broom cupboard with a bathroom. When I went to my room in the early evening it was freezing. I went fine down to complain and a young girl with braces said she's no idea how it possibly be cold as the heatings been on all day' with a smug and unhelpful smile. She clearly is clueless about customer service and general politeness/communication skills. She arranged for a heater to be brought up. The heater was noisey and I didn't want to leave it on all night. I woke up in the middle of the night freezing cold even though I was sleeping in layers. The room was very dated, I didn't feel dirty or due it feel clean. I wouldn't stay at the Crown & Mitre again and will do Travel Lodge next time.

My wife and myself have stayed at the Crown and Mitre many times over the years usually for a Christmas shopping weekend. After a bad time with noisy guests last Christmas we were offered a complimentary bed and breakfast which we added another night on.Our complaint was handled very well by the Manager Ms.McLellan who is very professional. We both love this Hotel and will continue to use it for our Christmas shopping weekend every year. Many thanks, Norman and Sue

This hotel is in the centre of the town close to the train station and the staff are very friendly and helpful. There is limited parking at the rear of the hotel but the staff will move cars about to help make space in the carpark for guests. The bar is ok and the breakfast is very good. The rooms are a little run down due to the age of the furniture but it's nice and clean and a very friendly place to stay.

Great short stay in this perfectly located hotel. 5 minutes by walk from train station and just located in the big city center Square! Check out is at noon, so you have plenty of time to enjoy your stay there even if you arrive late at night. Swimming pool and jacuzzi amenities are a big plus and were the reason we decided to stay there, we were not disappointed. Great welcome from the staff.

"Possible the Worst Hotel I've Stayed In"

Initial impression of the hotel was quite positive . Reception looked clean & welcoming . After checking in there was a long queue for the rather small antiquated lift we ended up carrying our luggage up three & half flights of stairs . The room was small & uncomfortably warm . Not the cleanest of rooms . Torn dirty wallpaper & heavy dust hanging from the wardrobe . Toilet paper not replaced . One night I had a steak ordered medium rare came medium to well done . Second steak tasted like it was off. Second night tried the gammon which was grey in colour. Breakfast on my last morning requested tea & toast after 20 mins & noticing people who had come in after me receiving their drinks etc . I mentioned to the waitress that I was waiting & need to leave by 8am . Another 10mins passed & still no tea or toast . I walked out . Expensive breakfast when you end up with nothing ! The staff need training in hospitality most were surly & appeared to not care less. There was one older gent serving behind the bar who was pleasant . Very disappointed would not recommend or return

Loved the grand old reception area. We stopped en route to Scotland for one night. Check in was fast and the lady behind the desk was helpful when I asked for a vegan dinner option, She phoned the kitchen staff and they were able to give me an alternative menu with very little notice. It was a bit tricky to find our room but a member of staff pointed us in the right direction. Out room was at the back and quite small but clean and tidy, it was a bit hot but we opened the window. There was a bath and shower, the only thing we didn't like was the louvre door on the bathroom, not very private. Dinner was served quickly and the food was good, same with the breakfast buffet which provided a good choice.
