Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel

Beautiful hotel, with lots of history, charm and beautifully designed and well thought out bedrooms. It was one of the best nights sleeps I had in recent memory. Service was fantastic too, with a smile and thoughtfulness from the team. Didn't stop for breakfast or dinner so unable to comment however both menus looked appetising and well-priced. Evidently the hotel was having some continued renovation which was great to see and adds an added incentive on returning. Short walk into Canterbury Town Centre was also an added bonus.

I booked this hotel for a group booking for us and our wedding guests last September for July this year.. To be cancelled 8 weeks before my wedding and having the stress of finding another hotel... Customer service was awful and gave us an added stress that wasn't needed so close to our wedding date. We should have been told when booking that they was doing a government scheme for refuges and ends June but could go on....

A large booking of almost £4000 was made almost a year in advance only to be cancelled 7 weeks before we were due to arrive. They agreed out booking whilst under another contract by the government and was left without any rooms for 38 guests. Just a warning to anyone wanting to book here check first as you may not have a hotel to stay in.

Arrived to a very warm welcome from staff member Megan who was so happy in her job. Nothing too much trouble very attentive tea coffee refills lovely home made sandwiches cakes scones. Excellent service excellent food good quality food home made never felt rushed at all. Lovely surroundings comfy seating very warm. You must try this hotel is wonderful.

Friendly welcome by staff but we were the only ones in the whole dining area. Afternoon tea was lovely… and warm scones were so light & delicious! Very traditional hotel, clean & tidy. The sound of refugee children playing outside broke the silence and it was lovely seeing them playing, they also waved us goodbye!

Is there a list of hotels were you can check if they are part of this money racket by taking in immigrants? Crawling with. Asylum seekers with not a sight of any women or kids. Felt very uncomfortable in this place Avoid at all costs.

My wife and twin 16-year old daughters booked a three night long weekend at what we believed to be a beautiful hotel near Canterbury , but when we arrived there were just bearded men in turbans lolling around the grounds and entrance. As soon as they saw our daughters they were making what I believe were lewd comments, in a foreign language - but from their leering and body language, we understood what they meant. Fearing for our daughters safety, we left immediately, and forfeited the substantial prepayment. We ultimately stayed at a lovely B&B in Canterbury.

My husband and I initially booked this hotel for 3 nights with my 2 dogs. Unfortunately, 2 of the nights were cancelled at the last minute and we had to reduce our stay as we were visiting my grandchildren. There were no other affordable hotels to stay with pets so we had to travel home the following evening. Was very disappointed as this was booked a couple of months ago. However, I was happy with the room in the newly built extension but was sad that it was for only one night. Will still book again as this is a convenient location when visiting my son. The room was a little pricey but our initial 2 nights that were cancelled was more reasonable.

Cancelled our reservation due to the Afghan Crisis. Avoid if there is any worldwide crisis taking place. Terrible service from this hotel. We made this reservation in good faith. Cancelling it like this is disgraceful from this hotel. Avoid avoid avoid

Had a two night stay in August. A nice hotel in a great location for visiting Canterbury, the cathedral is a 10 minute walk away. Car parking was plentiful and free. The room had everything we required was comfortable and clean. Staff were friendly and attentive. We didn't eat at the hotel only because we prefer to eat out. Would definitely stay there again.

The hotel had just heard that it was being taken over for Afghan refugees when I arrived and I was told that the 5 nights I had booked were now 4. When that was sorted out I quite liked staying there. Breakfast was good and the room was adequate but pricey. The refugees are staying until November so you will be unlikely to get in before then.

Not one of my best Hotel experiences I've had but also not the worst. The staff were very pleasant in reception and welcoming. After checking in online, we got our key and went to our room. After entering I noticed that the toilet seat was detached and placed on the rim for some reason... We also got a call at 23:00 to check that we were in the room as we weren't registered as having arrived on their system. A one off I'm sure. Although we didn't appreciate, what sounded like, people outside our room prior to said call (probably checking to see if they could hear us in the room). The Breakfast was however the least enjoyable part of my 4 night stay. Each morning the staff were lost and unorganised, a couple next to us had to leave before their porridge arrived after ordering it an hour and a half beforehand. The food was fine and did the job for the day but it definitely wasn't a restaurant experience. As kind as the staff were, it didn't seem that they had any training on how to organise breakfast. The menu was fine however for anyone that is looking to pay for breakfast, I would advise leaving ample time until you need to leave as we were there for a few hours each morning and the last people to leave every morning.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The staff were all super friendly and couldn't do more to help. There were a few restrictions still in place due to staffing and getting over covid rules, but I don't think it impaired our visit at all. I'd read reports of the dated decor but I thought it was great and we spent time down in the bar. Food at the restaurant was gorgeous and generous portions. We had dinner one night and breakfasts everyday. My only issue was that our room floor boards were very creaky as we're the ones in the room above, but again, this wasn't really an issue, just the only reason why it's not getting 5 stars. Parking was good and the hotel was a very easy 15min stroll to the catherdral. We would stay here again as we were very happy there.

We booked this hotel just outside the medieval part of Canterbury as it had a free safe car park. As it was only a short walk from the centre we ate our meals except breakfast in there. Our room in the Victorian art was large with a high ceiling. It all fitted our needs in the pandemic circumstances.

Lovely hotel. Wonderful staff that couldn't do enough for us. Stayed with my young daughter and friend for a couple of days break, we will definitely be back. The hotel decor is warm, inviting and quirky. The breakfast was great for what we paid and there was a good choice. Beds were comfortable to! No complaints from us, would throughly recommend this hotel in every way.

This was not a good experience at all. The food quality was very poor, no one was interested when a complaint and much of what was presented was not eaten. If the Covid epidemic is going to reduce the cleaning frequency of the room then at least leave enough supplies for the whole stay and not just one night. The internet was just hopeless.

We booked this hotel for the good location to Canterbury centre and the parking available - this didn't disappoint. On arrival we were greeted by lots of signs asking us to wear masks and were encouraged by the receptionists to wear one, even though they weren't themselves (We stayed after the rules had changed to no longer mandatory) - we didn't receive the most friendliest of greeting. As we were too early to check in and realising there was going to be no movement on check in time, we grabbed ourselves a beer. The bar area was extremely dated, with a musty smell. It was tired looking and in desperate need of a makeover to bring it out of the dark ages. We were luckily enough to be allocated newly refurbished rooms and they were fabulous!! Very bright and airy, the decor was lovely. It was like staying in a different hotel than downstairs, which I was very grateful of! After emailing a few days before to explain it was my husbands birthday to see if something could be put it the room, I was disappointed to find there was no little surprise as promised. The new rooms definitely deserve 5 stars but with the rest of the hotel looking worn, the not so friendly reception staff and the birthday let down, I've given it 3.

I really like the Location of the hotel.but I don't like the old style interior of the rooms. They looks so ugly,especially I didn't like the bathroom.when you walk on the wooden floor, you can hear loud noise.Next time I would prefer the modern update side of the hotel.

At arrival we were greeted warmly by receptionist, check in was done online . We chose to stay in one of the new contemporary rooms , wow they are really well decorated, modern decor , the bathroom was really nice , shower was easy to use all push button , mirror had built in lights . Bed was super comfortable,heating cooling was easy to use and very efficient. The only minus point for us ,was there was only one armchair and no table , was a desk come dressing table. The bar was well run no issues at all , we ate in the bar on our stay , food was great well presented. Overall we enjoyed our stay , easy walk into Canterbury.

We booked this hotel because we were going away with our dog, for the first time. It seemed to have all that we wanted for us and our dog. We were warmly greeted and our dog had a bed blanket and a bowl all ready in our room - brilliant. The hotel staff were extremely accommodating for us and our dog. We had our meals in our room and they always arrived still very hot. The room was a reasonable size, and very clean, the bed was very comfortable, the bathroom was nicely laid out, and we were really comfortable there. The only issues we had were: 1) there had been a bird strike on the outer pane of the sealed double glazing unit, the glass had fallen inside the double pane. It didn't look good at all. 2) the view from our room at the back was very poor - if you have guests in these rooms they need a far better view

Easy walk to the town centre on straight road about 10 minutes. Hotel setting attractive but sadly we could not use the grounds due to poor weather. Chose the hotel over Premier Inn or Travelodge as wanted a few more facilities but again sadly we did not use these, not sure if others did. Lots to do in town so bar and restaurant not needed. The decor is all quite shabby and old-fashioned, awful pictures everywhere, the rooms are comfortable but need refurbishment, to match up to quality of clean modern styles in Premier Inn etc. Reception always staffed and helpful personnel. Rooms not cleaned due to Covid

So good to be back at the Abbots Barton Hotel again following what seems like a lifetime in lockdown restrictions. My wife and I enjoyed the amazing tower room No 103 which had a most wonderful four poster bed and our room overlooked the front gardens which was a pleasure to wake up to every morning. The huge room also benefitted from a lovely seating area and beautiful bathroom with a relaxing jaccuzi bath. We enjoyed a wonderful two night stay at the Abbots Barton and all the staff and wider facilities were nothing short of fantastic. Our morning breakfast in the main dining hall was to die for and truly set us up for the day ahead exploring nearby Canterbury and everything the Town has to offer. We really cant wait to return to this jewel in the BWs crown and can really recommend staying at this Hotel which is full of character, tradition and style whilst keeping up with the most modern amenities for their guests.. We really had such a wonderful stay at this hotel in one of their beautifully newly built suites. The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly, especially Mark who was an expert on all the local gins! The food we had on one of the evenings was super tasty, well presented and excellent value for money. The breakfasts were really good too. Cantebury itself is a beautiful and historic city to visit with lots of thongs to see and do. Highly recommended the punting on the River Stour. We will definatley return.

The hotel is ideally situated just a short walk from the centre of Canterbury. It is also an ideal place to tour the area. Our room was large and comfortable. We had booked for breakfast which had a wide choice and was excellent. You certainly did not need anything else to eat until late afternoon if then.

We went for an afternoon cream tea .the service and politeness friendly staff was lovely. Checking all was okay did we need more tea. Table clothes and napkins pure white . Cakes appear all home made,not boxed type, Yes we would return Plenty parking avaliable

Such nice, friendly helpful staff and a very comfortable hotel. It was a pleasure to stay in a slightly quirky hotel rather than one of the ubiquitous corporate hotels. Our room had everything we needed, including a good bed. A great nights rest.

We had a Groupon deal for afternoon tea so obviously with the deal it was excellent value. We were asked if we wanted to have it inside or outside in the garden. We decided the garden was much better as it was a lovely sunny day. We were the only ones out there and when we ran out of tea we began to think they had forgotten us! Staff were very pleasant. Note - the entrance isn't that easy to find, we drove past it without realising!

We had a nice break here - room only as breakfast is extra and we were happy to eat out. The setting is very nice and close to Kent Cricket ground. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the room clean (albeit a little dated) - although no cleaning was done during our stay due to Covid (no issue for us) All in all we had a very nice stay and would happily return

Stayed as part of a coach group (GB Tours). My room was comfortable, light, spotlessly clean on arrival, plenty of storage space and nice bathroom. The food was very nice, a good choice was offered. The dinners were lovely. Breakfast was chaotic. Despite pre-ordering and tables numbered the staff struggled to cope, even though we were a small group. Perhaps the dining room staff need some further training and support from managers / experienced staff. Surprised the managers did not go round the tables to check all was okay and deal with issues. Come on Best Western you can do better. Level of service quality not quite up to the mark. No daily room service nor bin emptying due to covid restrictions but it would have been nice to have been told this on check in.

Stayed at this hotel over the Bank Holiday weekend with my aged brother. Checked in no problem, I n fact very quick and easy, the reception staff I found very friendly and helpful all weekend. Our room was a bit the worse for wear, no air-conditioning but widows that did open. Wall paper parting company with the wall. Breakfast was a bit chaotic, numbering them might help and I'm still waiting for a strawberry yoghurt. All things considered can't complain, it was good to get away. This hotel is ideal for Canterbury sightseeing.

Really friendly staff, being vegetarian the food lines are not always easy to fulfil, they have a good range of vegetarian food and staff ready to satisfy at the best the requirements. I had dinner and breakfast twice and I am really satisfied. The place is really clean and quiet and I was able to rest after the busy day in Canterbury. I understand that with the COVID restrictions the room could not be made or the rubbish collected, that is the only thing that would have rounded my stay.

Check in smooth as could be , but room very tired with peeling wall paper , flat pillows and hardly any power points although mattress comfortable. We had friends staying in room next door and impressed ! by air con unit clearly faulty and rather than repair it had neen boxed in ?? Breakfast not the best and lots of confusion when serving up ( maybe a good idea to number the tables ?) "Come on Best Western you can do better than this"

Excellent staff. Had a problem with toilet not flushing, maintenance had left so duty manager checked it, unable to sort it so we were moved to another room with minimum of fuss. Rooms nicely decorated, plenty of room and storage. Breakfast had plenty of choice and adapted to requests. Had dinner first night which was very good. We had scotch egg as starter, chicken schnitzel and fish and chips for main. Very tasty and freshly cooked. Hotel in perfect location for centre of Canterbury, 15 min walk. Staff in restaurant very pleasant and helpful, and reception staff very good.

The hotel is far enough from the city centre that it's out of the hussle and bustle, but it's also a very short walk (10 minutes or so) into the centre of Canterbury. The rooms are very spacious, beds are comfy, and all very clean. The staff are all super friendly and helpful. Breakfast was the only slight let down - slow service, average food, though there are plenty of options so good to suit everyone. Was expensive for what it is. All in all, a good stay!

We've not stayed at this hotel so we can only comment on the public spaces. These were immaculately clean and well furnished and decorated. We had afternoon tea there last week and the sandwiches, cakes and scones were excellent. Appropriate Covid precautions were in place and all of the staff were helpful and friendly. We were so impressed that , even though we are relatively local, we hope to make more use of this charming and comfortable hotel.

Good location for walking trips to Canterbury. Beatiful building arhitecture and matched inside decor. Very good standard of cleanliness and service for an UK hotel although a little behind same chalet type establishments in Europe.

Great mini break conveniently located within easy walking distance to town, with free parking too so a great bonus. We took advantage of the 3 nights for the price of 2 and was great value. As a Best Western rewards member we duly received an upgrade ( although I did have to ask) to a great sized room and as such was extremely comfortable. Yes, the decor is a little tired but not to the extent of being overly critical. The breakfast was just ok though, items advertised on the menu were not available (bananas in my case). Now I understand these are testing times, but if not available please remove from the menu. Coffee wasn't particularly nice so a top tip ask for coffee from the bar so much better thanks to the staff member for getting it. All in all a great break and thoroughly recommended.

The hotel is overall quite charming and comfortable, if a bit dated. Would have liked a fridge in the room and a proper tea and coffee tray. More importantly, the food there was genuinely poor. 13.50 for breakfast of cheap quality stuff with tiny portions, quite slow and disorganised service (but friendly staff who were clearly trying hard) - felt like a bit of a rip off!

We could hear every sound from the room above. There was no sound proofing at all. We eventually had to ask to be moved. Such a shame as the hotel is close to the city centre and the staff were friendly.It certainly isn't worth £90 a night.

Hotel is well situated for the city centre and the grounds of the hotel are extensive with plenty of parking spaces.Warm welcome from the friendly and helpful staff and the reception area is very inviting. Our room 105 was disappointingly small and cramped but with plenty of storage options for our clothes etc. It was very gloomy and needed all the lights on during daylight hours. The tea and coffee tray was not fit for purpose. Cardboard cups instead of china and wooden sticks instead of spoons took the pandemic precautions to a ridiculous level. Not even a packet of biscuits or a bottle of water.The bathroom was very tired - with all the COVID measures in place we were surprised that an old fashioned shower curtain which is a harbinger of germs was in place instead of a screen. It was also too short to stop the floor from getting wet. We both opted for having a bath instead of a shower as it was more hygienic. The pathetically small shelf above the sink made it impossible to use it for our bathroom toiletries. The towel rail didn't work and the loo roll holder rocked from side to side so the loo roll kept falling off. Thankfully there was a washing line over the bath to drape the wet towels over to dry as there was nowhere else to be able to do this. The breakfast room was soulless - we know that social distancing was needed but it was a most unpleasant space in which to start one's day. Breakfast was disappointing and to serve one scrawny rasher of bacon for the English breakfast was underwhelming. The tea and coffee were tasteless and not hot. Luckily we had brought our own tea bags and decent coffee. All in all underwhelming.

I booked this for my son and his fiancée as their engagement party was cancelled due to Covid. As Canterbury is one of their favourite places Arrival was good- handed keys to the room. The room itself had old dirty carpets, very dusty room, very dated, oversized cupboard in the small room giving them even less space to move around. This was meant to be COVID safe, yet it was filthy - even the bath didn't look like it had been cleaned properly - the towels and sheets looked well past their best really threadbare and old. Amy didn't get a confirmation email She had to call the hotel to confirm it had been booked They are a young couple and were really looking forward to a 2 night break They only took minimal photos of the bathroom and the ‘view' of what can only be described as a local tip from their bedroom window How can this be COVID safe ? The shower rail is filthy the ceiling and wall in bathroom very mouldy and mould spores are bad for asthmatics - which they both are They didn't want to complain as felt uncomfortable doing so due to their young age But when I saw the photos last night it was disgusting Either clean the hotel properly to make it as advertised or close it down while a refurb and clean up to make it the advertised standard This wasn't a cheap hotel. The Falstaff hotel Was cheaper- we had stayed there - but they chose best western as the pictures looked beautiful As they were not given a booking reference we are unable to contact best western to discuss this They went to the bar and waited ten minutes then went to the reception to ask if anyone could serve them a drink I hope someone from the management team reads this and some form of compensation offered so they can then have an alternative break at another BW which is actually COVID safe

Great price (via Booking.com) and service from start to finish. The wonderful staff who have had a rough time in their industry over the last few months were faultless. Well situated for the city. Breakfast was tasty and dinner has a number of great options.

This hotel is situated on the edge of the Canterbury city center which is within easy walking distance. There is free parking available on a first come first served basis. There are essentially two parking areas and between them you should find somewhere to park. The check in experience was done online so we only had to collect the key upon arrival. The room was clean and well appointed. It had a TV, kettle with tea and coffee as well as a full size cabinet. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel bar serves tasty food and the service is excellent. As this hotel is dog friendly we dined in the bar as dogs are not permitted in the restaurant. The restaurant is the only place that dog are not allowed to go. They are allowed in all other areas of the hotel and grounds. The grounds are excellent for dog walking and there is even a bin specially for dog “deposits”. Overall this is an excellent hotel that serves the city of Canterbury well.

As with many people this year we celebrated our wedding anniversary in the UK. We explored and loved Canterbury whilst we were there and this hotel was a pleasant 10 minute walk outside town. We were made very welcome by EV and the team there who went the extra bit to make this special for us. Room was pleasant and spacious. We ate there one night and food was really good as was the morning breakfast Good value for money and free parking meant we left the car for 2 days Highly recommended

Great hotel in the right location for canterbury, easy walk into town. The rooms where clean and the hotel is a fantastic building with plenty of car parking. They treated us us to a free drink whicjh a nice surprise. The hotel is an easy walk into town. The staff where helpful and friendly and they have the right measures in place for the civil situation. Would recommend and stay here again. Canterbury is a gem and well worth a visit.

I wanted a secure hotel with parking and access to town. That's exactly what we got. Staff were friendly, but my wife see the receptionist mimic us, not so good. The room and decor is mock period, and the whole place needs to freshen up. Food was generous but tasteless. I would have been happier if there was bottled water and a safe for my valuables.

Hotel staff were all very helpful , hotel in good location for exploring this part of the country. Clean and tidy accommodation, will need to update the menu when things get back to normal. Need to space out serving breakfast a little better , ie let you finish starter before bringing out another course.

3 nights here midweek. Covid-secure, friendly and helpful staff. great location within walking distance to town/cathedral/supermarkets. Reasonably priced, individually decorated room. Would certainly stay again.

stayed last week 8-11th sept very good and friendly staff room very comfortable very good for a three star hotel ,as others have said no sign outside visible for hotel ,one sign small and obscured by tree whoever put it up is blind or stupid but other than that great stay

My husband and I had a fantastic overnight stay at this wonderful hotel. The room was huge and gorgeous, especially loved the jacuzzi bath. Staff couldn't have been more friendly and helpful especially with the Covid 19 social distancing etc. Thank you to the Manager Mark who helped us organise our night stay and for our surprise bottle of bubbly on our arrival.

The first problem we found was, the actual road entrance was not signposted, two frameworks for signs there, but no signs fitted, the only sign there was, was not visible coming from the town centre, so we missed the turning. Once location found, nice and easy at reception, friendly, nice reception area. We were told by receptionist that if we required anything, ie: extra tea making materials, just ask reception. We got our key to room 106, first impression, nicely surprised, we had a separate lounge area, and an on suite bathroom, looking good, until I walked into the bathroom, all rooms are supposed to have showers, this room only had a hand held attachment to the bath tap, impossible for me to stand up and shower as it had a slopping ceiling. I went back to reception, they apologised and gave us room 122, just got into the room, and the phone rang saying we have found a better room for you, back down to reception, pick up key to room 220, by this time getting a bit annoyed, unpacked and settled in. On the way out in the afternoon we requested more tea making stuff, got back to our room at 22.00hrs, none had been delivered, so had to call the night porter. Had a bad nights sleep, bed not very comfortable, [hard mattress] and pillows flat and no give. We requested better pillows when we went down for breakfast, they said to let them know when we are leaving the room to go out, we did at 10.30hrs, got back late afternoon, still no pillows, so had to ask again, new pillows waiting for us when we got back to the room at 22.00hrs. Each time we requested things at reception it was forgotten, so had to ask twice. Breakfast was really good, apart from a forgetful member of staff, forgetting to bring things we had asked for on 3 occasions, second day different staff, no problems, very good and quick service. Overall the hotel layout was very nice and plush, but decor needed a bit of an update, especially our room. Hotel was nicely situated 10 minutes walk away from a lovely town. A lovely looking building.

Stayed here for 3 nights and so pleased with our choice. Slightly dated rooms but very clean and totally charming. Plenty of comfortable seating around the hotel lobby and lounge areas. Lovely atmosphere. Great breakfast. I loved that breakfast could be served to your room. Such a luxury as it allows for a lazy relaxing morning, before the start of a full day out exploring. Excellent location with just a 7 minute stroll to the heart of Canterbury with all the shops and bars - including the magnificent cathedral. Highly recommend a visit to The Butter market pub for delicious homemade food. Only a ten minute drive to Whitstable beach too, so we took advantage when the sun came out to have an ice cream by the sea.

Lovely building, perfect location close to the city. Clean room. Nice staff especially the guys on breakfast. Great to have the free parking and pleased with COVID19 measure. BUT - check in what a nightmare. Arrived at 1.50. When we arrived an old gentleman was complaining about his room, and we wondered if the girl was just shy with her sulky responses. But when it got to our turn, she greeted us with her chin in her hand. Firstly, she claimed we booked a twin (when we got home and checked email confirmation this wasn't correct). So, when we asked what we could do, we'd booked a double, she said that she could have the beds zipped together. So we said yes please. After five minutes she then bizarrely asked if we still wanted the room, we repeated yes, do we still want the beds zipped together, yes. The attitude was like something of a comic show. Finally, she got on the walkie-talkie and asked for the bed to be put together. We suggested waiting in the bar. Husband nipped back after half an hour - room still not ready, we showed our phone to show there were other double rooms, couldn't we just be moved to one of them? Kid you not, she sat there tapping away and asked us to refresh our phone, no other rooms. (This wasn't the case an hour late, we checked). Another 30 minutes room still not ready. When we asked if she could check, she said they hadn't contacted her to say it was ready. Still no key, we paid for breakfast. Lingered at bit more. At 3.10 - gave up and went into town. Thankfully, when we returned a darked haired friendly girl greeted us and handed us the key, bit of a faff. Hannah hadn't checked us in but had booked us in for breakfast. When we handed the key in on Monday, another possibly more senior member of staff behind the counter. Glad to see she can sit up and speak when being watched. RUDE RUDE RUDE unhelpful, moody girl.

We did a last minute booking and took advantage of the Pay for 2 Nights and a 3rd free offer. Hotel was a big surprise and was much better than expected. Staff all decent, Room excellent, and all facilities good. Very good Covid-19 practices going on. Breakfast decent, and bar / surroundings nice. Staff performed well with all that is going on, which sadly some guests do not understand or appreciate. Amazing that some found time to moan that their cereal came at the same time as their hot food, and toast was not done evenly on both sides. Well recommended and a short walk from the centre.

Took advantage of a 3 nights for 2 with breakfast. Good location and hotel clean and staff all efficient. We had one young chap waiter for a booked afternoon tea on our arrival on the Tuesday and he also served us on the Wednesday evening for dinner; he was very friendly and attentive (wish I had taken his name!). Hotel room was spotless and breakfast is also very good.

Good location with free parking. Hotel and staff were pretty good and very happy with COVID19 measures. Comfy room, if a little dated but was very clean! Breakfast was good, Ivana was very helpful and we would definitely stay again.

Very Good for a 3 star, Clean hotel and good breakfast which was served to us due to covid rather than buffet. It is quite basic and a little old fashioned (it is designed like this) but we liked it. Stayed 3 nights. Good location 15 mins walk to the city / cathedral.

We booked Sunday to Friday. Great location, free parking, very helpful and friendly staff, rooms were spacious and clean, 10 minutes walk from the city centre, 10 Minutes from Canterbury Cathedral and 10 minutes from Howletts Zoo. couldn't ask for more. They have all of the covid-19 safe measures in place. Just the type of break we were looking for and we made the right decision. It was sad to have to leave and I would definitely visit again

The hotel was built in the gothic style as a private house originally for an eminent citizen of Canterbury then became a hotel in the late twenties. There is a more modern section built on which looks like modernistic. There is a nice drive up to the place and a nice stone fountain (not working). I stayed in the delux bedroom at this hotel for my sixtieth birthday. I chose this place because of its lovely gothic architecture. The room was clean , comfortable and delightful with ensuite bathroom. It had a four poster bed and many windows with fine views. It had a space with a table and two armchairs in the bastion at the corner. There was plenty of wardrobe space and a desk. There were pictures in fancy frames around the walls. There was a television and remote. The ensuite bathroom was spacious with a corner bath/jaccuzzi. The overall decor was Victorian Gothic, which reminded me of The Grange built by AWN Pugin at Ramsgate. The staff were helpful and pleasant. I would recommend a stay here.

We booked a 3 nights for the price of 2 offer including breakfast, the positives were friendly helpful staff, free parking, good breakfast and evening meal. However, the hotel appeared to be rather tired - grout missing from the tiled bathroom floor, chipped bath enamel and wobbly fixings. The wifi in our room on the 3rd floor was very poor and regularly cut out. Our room was over the kitchen extraction fan and to top it all the view was of the builders skip and a general tip (see photo).

We got a 3 nights for 2 deal and I upgraded to a deluxe room with breakfast. The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the town centre. I would say it's a very traditional English hotel. Staff are efficient and friendly. The afternoon tea is definitely worth the money, that was thoroughly enjoyed. COVID measures in place to make you feel comfortable. One tip: if you have an English breakfast, ask for extra beans! Would definitely recommend this hotel.

We had a good stay at this property. Yes the rooms are old and need an update, but there was a bit of character about it especially the art! The main good thing was the staff on reception as myself and partner were having a tricky time (external things!) and could have had quite a short fuse, but the girls on reception were super helpful, efficient, friendly etc. Made the stay a lot better. One other downside was that we could hear the room upstairs(?) quite loudly if they walked about, and it woke us up. But the staff and good location made up for it.

The hotel room itself was lovely and clean, however the floors are so thin we could hear everything going on upstairs. The guests were walking around all night long and so I was completely unable to sleep.

We held our wedding at this hotel last November, it was perfect from start to finish. The majority of my family live quite far so all stayed at the hotel for the whole weekend, everyone was delighted with their rooms. All the staff were brilliant and made a fuss of all our guests when they checked in. Our reception room was already set up before I arrived the day before the wedding and our ceremony room was set up by the restaurant staff the morning of the wedding. The morning of our wedding was of course hectic but all the hotel staff were brilliant at calming everything down and making sure everything ran as soon they as possible. My bridesmaids and I were well looked after, breakfast was sent to our room, and the various suppliers we had hired for the wedding were directed by the receptionists. Unfortunately it rained all day and I was worried the bar might be abit too tight for our 100 guests for our welcome drinks reception, but the reception and lounge area was plenty of room. Our wedding breakfast was delicious, the waiters service was professional and was well run by the restaurant manger, all of our guests agreed. The room was turned around quickly and efficiently after our wedding breakfast for our reception and all the decorations were kept safe for us until the following day. My husband and I were thrilled with the bridal suite, and the restaurant staff were kind enough to run breakfast service a bit longer so we had time to say goodbye to our guests and eat breakfast before leaving for the airport. We can't wait to visit the hotel again and relive our special day. Many thanks to all the staff !

This was our second visit to this hotel , Reception staff polite, welcoming and after booking in we were given directions to our room. Bedroom spacious, nicely presented and comfortable. Bathroom facilities good and well maintained. We were meeting family in Canterbury so location excellent and only a short walk into town centre. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel, staff polite and friendly. Food we ordered for Dinner very good, well presented but limited choices. Breakfast self service, good variety of food and drinks on offer. At times Reception and Bar didn't always have staff available, advised this was due to some staffing issues. Permanent Staff members knowledgeable and helpful but new staff appeared to be unaware of how to use Best Western Rewards and gift cards. These issues were sorted out and dealt with promptly. We would definitely stay over at this pleasant hotel again. Looking forward to visiting again when SPA is up and running.

Stayed at the abbots Barton following a friends wedding. Check in desk were extremely helpful, room was clean and tidy. Bar staff were friendly and the beer was great, can't fault it! Would recommend.

We have just got back from a lovely tea, a gift to us, at the hotel. My wife is gluten free and they provided some great sandwiches and even nicer cakes for her, the sandwiches could have had a bigger variety of fillings but there were plenty. Mine was ordinary bread and cakes and they were delicious. We would fully recommend the hotel and the staff were great too and kept checking to make sure that we happy with everything.

We booked this to celebrate our Wedding Anniversary and we were so impressed. The food was amazing. Delicious sandwiches, great cakes and the fruit scone was wonderful. And the atmosphere was perfect. Thank you.

An ideally situated hotel for exploring Canterbury - 10 minute walk. Luckily we arrived early and took the last car parking space, which was essential as we would not have left the car in a public car park in Canterbury. The room and shower room (see later comment re the shower) were both clean. We enjoyed our one night B & B, plus dinner. All our meals were OK. I am fussy about my white wine being cold and like it to stand in ice. I ordered a half carafe of white wine and although it wasn't in a bottle the waiter put the carafe in a wine cooler for me. The only adverse comment was that towards the end of our dinner on Saturday night as my husband had finished, the waiter removed my his plate, and, although I still had food in my hand, he asked if he could remove my plate, which seemed a bit strange. The room overlooked the building site, but as work is being done on the hotel it was unavoidable and didn't affect us. The shower needs to be treated with a black mould spray and the sink had no 'surround' and so there was no room to put soap, etc. There was a shelf to the side of the sink, but you actually need something at the back by the taps to put soap etc. on. Unfortunately, we were disturbed by the couple in the room next to us returning to their room at 1.40 am. You could hear them coming down the corridor and then once they had slammed the bedroom and bathroom doors, they continued to talk so loud that we could hear them through the wall. Eventually the night porter knocked on their door and asked them to be quiet. Unfortunately, he didn't return later to check they were still quiet because if he had he would have heard the same noise! They then both had showers in the middle of the night! I could have gone and knocked on their door but as we assumed they had been drinking I didn't know what response i would get. Unfortunately I didn't think about ringing them. Overall, a very pleasant stay and if we needed a room in Canterbury again we would stay here.

Me and my mum visited for afternoon tea earlier this week and had a fantastic time. The reception lady was helpful and the manger was very good and polite made sure we had morw tea or coffee if we needed it. The food was very good and plentiful. Will definitely come back. Thank you

We booked a four day Christmas break with Saga at The Best Western in Canterbury 23/27 December 2019. It was without any doubt the worst hotel experience we have ever experienced in our lives. It was so bad we left for home Christmas morning at 9.00am. Dinner on the first night was chicken (OK) accompanied by a large half cooked inedible potato (not OK). We had almost finished this when the vegtables arrved - again half cooked. After this experience we decided to forgo the entertainment arranged for Christmas Eve and spent a very pleasant day strolling around Canterbury, a lovely old city. On arrival back at the hotel around 4.30pm we discovered our room had not been cleaned, beds not made, towels in the bath etc. We called reception and spoke to the manager who suggested we could "tidy the room ourselves". We went down to confront said manager turning down his "do it yourself" suggestion, his offer of a bottle of wine and his promise the room would bve done "tomorow". Our room by the way had the most apalling view, a rubbish dump the size of a football pitch! Christmas Eve evening we went down to dinner in "the banqueting hall", a euphamestic description for a large sparsely decorated carpet-less room. The dinner serving was shambolic. We were obliged to select meals on arrival and were not given a copy of the selection nor were others, meaning neither the waiters nor the guests had any idea of who had ordered what. Eventually we all got served except those who had ordered the trout. The trout dish arrived as we finished the main course. Christmas day arrives... we wake up at 8.00am and make a decision. We must cut out losses and get away since we reckon we will have a far better time at home. Home, a 200 mile drive away but worth it just get away from a £1,500 mistake of a Christmas break

Would like to say it's the second time I've stayed at this hotel and can't praise the staff enough! Also, good breakfast, nothing is too much trouble for the waiting staff and always with a smile. Good size room and fantastic location.

Great location just a short walk (15mins) from the city and cathederal etc. Comfortable bed, hot shower and good towels. Very creaky floors. We didnt eat apart from breakfast which was adequate but nothing to write home about, usual continental plus a buffet hot selection. wasnt offered a change of eggs and there was no gluten free sausage option

Just had an amazing afternoon tea at the hotel with my wife and parents. The food was beautiful and plentiful. The service was fantastic and all set in beautiful surroundings. We have had plenty of afternoon teas over the years and this was the best by far, I can highly recommended this venue and would rate it 100 out of 100. Absolutely first class. Thanks you very much. Will be booking again next year.

The exterior is lovely, however, the interior is quite dated! Beds ok and pillows meh. The rooms are extremely Noisy. First room had noisy kids that sounded like they were in my room. Spoke to reception and they gave me a different room. Not much better no noisy kids, but some jerk slamming drawers. Like seriously who actually uses the damn drawers. If you want quiet and rest don't stay here!

Rooms are really clean and tidy however food needs a lot to be desired. For very small portion size it's really expensive. Not value for money. Buffet style breakfast had decent selection but meat and cheese fork were on same plate. I ordered smashed avocado breakfast which on a small plate was very difficult to eat. From description I expected it to be on sourdough toast not every element separate on plate.

A traditional style of hotel, with professional, helpful staff.The room was warm comfortable and clean. Generally a high level of service was experienced. The location is within easy walking distance of the city centre and amenities.The hotel has easy access from the main road and a large car park.

Small room and bathroom, used to better proportions, very small double bed Sound proofing was poor as could clearly hear, shall we say, activity and conversations from nearby rooms in the early hours. Car parking is limited and poorly lit. Staff very friendly and helpful though, they are a credit to the hotel.

I had a great evening. For starter I had the ham hock pate which was to die for. Turkey dinner with the trimmings was lovely (I would of liked more pigs and blankets though!!) and the desert was okay.. I had a cheese platter, but the portion and selection was a bit of a poor show.. However after we had warm mince pies which again, were lovely!! The staff would do near on anything for you and prices on alcohol weren't too bad.. But i was charged £5 for a J20 and bottle of water. I danced the night away with my friends and had a great evening. Thankyou best Western:)

Stayed 2 nights to attend a friends wedding nearby. Excellent attentive staff. Room was clean and comfortable no real view but that didn't bother us as out of room most of time apart from sleeping. Beds comfortable and warm didn't need to use air con. Ate in restaurant one night adequate food well presented and excellent service from Charlie. Would definitely stay here again, only 15 min walk from Canterbury centre.

I just wanted to thank everyone who works at the Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel. We hosted our staff Christmas party here last Friday night. Everyone was hugely complementary about the food, everyone enjoyed every course and every combination served up. The waiting staff were on great form, patient when we couldn't remember what we'd ordered and got involved with the celebrations of the evening with us. The bar staff did a great job in looking after us all and we never had to wait too long to be served. The Reception team from arrival to checkout were professional, friendly and again, got involved in the spirit of the evening. Entertainment for the evening which consisted of Casino Tables, Photo Booth and a DJ who played ALL the requests was also well thought through and brilliantly done. Thanks also to Mark and Emma for organising a brilliant evening – we can't wait to hear what you have planned for the 2020's celebrations! If you have yet to host your Christmas Party at this venue, I can highly recommend it!

Stayed mid week for one night... My thoughts are: - Signage to the entrance to the hotel from the road was hard to see on a very wet and dark night - it definitely needs some attention - The check in process was rather impersonal, verging on rude - The WiFi was really poor in our room. Firstly, an overly complicated process to log on, then the quality of the signal was dire, it kept dropping off as the signal was as the strength was poor. Not at all suitable for a business user. - As many of the reviews point out, the decor is a throw back to the 80's and looking rather tired in places We didn't try the breakfast, as we thought it was too expensive so we walked into town and went to a local cafe. Would not rush back or recommend

Stayed here for one night 7th December to attend the Christmas market in Canterbury town centre. Hotel is in a good location, 10 minute walk to the centre. Rooms are of a good standard, bed was big enough for more than two! Only downside, the pillows were too hard for me. Staff were very helpful and polite.

If you want to be reminded about what hotels used to be like, try this one. Deep carpets, old world lounge/bar/reading room and service by staff who are just a little bit better/polite than the norm. Sadly the hotel dining room is not particularly welcoming which is why we never saw anyone in it and the food in the bar is very expensive for what you get, in our case that was very gristly ribs smothered in some tasteless sauce Our room was at one extreme of the hotel so a lift several heavy fire doors and numerous long twisting corridors had to be navigated to get to the room. The room was fine and came with jacuzzi but the walls were paper thin and we could hear people talking and walking around in the adjacent rooms. I doubt there had been any attempt to soundproof! The view from the window would have been fine but sadly the yard area behind the hotel appeared to be the hotels in house builders yard so was full of building material/rubbish and very unsightly Personally I liked the old style, well located hotel but sadly it needs a lot of improvements in a number of areas to tempt me back

This is a nice old-fashioned looking hotel from the outside.as well as the inside. Friendly, welcoming staff. Nice room, but the fan was a bit noisy, and the WiFi rather weak. The restaurant deserves a special mention. Excellent!

The hotel is on a main road into Canterbury, parking not a problem. i would say a 15 min walk into town for the average person, we took taxis in the evening because it was November and cold! I wouldn't say hotel is dated, it is cosy and if you like cosy then it is great whatever age you are. Rooms compact, clean, nice bathroom, comfortable bed but have to say the lampshades were COVERED in dust! Never seen anything like it before. Breakfast was ok, however the hot food in the heated containers should be changed more often .i.e. fried eggs hard. If we come down to b breakfast half and hour or so before the end, we shouldn't have to have what's been there for perhaps an hour. Service haphazard, waiters seem to disappear for quite long periods. We had dinner the first night. In my opinion the menu is far too fancy for a 3 star hotel and the proof was in the emptiness of the dining room over the 3 nights we stayed. Too fancy, too expensive, not sure who the hotel is trying to attract. No offence to the hotel but if you wanted fine dining you wouldn't stay at a 3 star would you? The service was again slow. Would recommend going into Canterbury where there are plenty of restaurants at a better value and you get more varied choice. I know it was November and not the busiest of times ut the emptiness was depressing and the bar and lounge empty. staff friendly although I get the impression that they don't want to deal with you unless they have to. On two nights we had to ring up because our radiators were cold to find out they hadn't switched on the heating. One night they said they would send someone up, never came while we sat waiting, radiators got warm, not even a phone call to say sorry or that it was on. So I would sum up by saying the hotel needs to try and think of a way to keep guests from going elsewhere for dinner but otherwise it is fine for a short stay.

This hotel will transport you back to the late 70's. The wall paper is lifting from the walls the rooms have many cobwebs and blacken grout. The carpets have bunched up in patches. You queue for a table at breakfast as the restaurant is so small. The pillows are almost as flat as a pizza. However the staff are great. Stay elsewhere until they have renovated.

Had a most enjoyable couple of days whilst visiting friends and family. We were impressed with the facilities and particularly the staff who were friendly,helpful and attentive. The hotel was overall far better than we had been expecting from some of the previousreviews

Gently dilapidated, too much carpet and somewhat trapped in yesteryear. Seems to suit an older clientele. Overpriced food of variable merit/quality. Breakfast pretty good and room ok. Ditch the 5 spurious throw cushions and 3/4 awful foam pillows and just give me one decent pillow to sleep on. Both arrival and check-in brightened by competent, diligent and personable staff on reception, who took the time to ask about, identify and resolve problems. They somewhat rescued my experience, so thanks to both of them!

No matter which old town in the UK you stay at, parking is just about non-existent downtown. Never the less, Canterbury is a must to visit... tremendous history. The Abbots Barton was an old hotel that has been enlarged. Good parking on the hotel grounds. Staff was very obliging and pleasant, food was well prepared and breakfast was very good. Rooms were clean, roomy and well furnished. Would recommend.

Nice and cosy old hotel...old mansion style... Architecture typical from the 19th century. Many antiques furniture and paintings! Warm and peaceful atmosphere when it's winter outsider! Kind welcome at the lobby : smiling and cool, always here to help you... Good restaurant.Complete continental or english breakfast. Parking and nice garden. Clean room and bathroom (bio products). Ideal situation just nearby the center : you can east reach Canterbury by foot in 10 minutes. The district is safety days and nights.

We had a great time and will book this hotel again when we visit Canterbury again. The wifi in the room was a bit slow, but that is oke. In the bar and other places the wifi is fine. Room was nice and clean, beds are really good.

Our first time in Canterbury and a lovely hotel to stay in only ten minute walk into the city, the hotel reception was warm and welcoming staff attentive and helpful. The room was clean a bit dated but very comfortable left the net curtain shut due to building site out back, a quick read of the photocopied slightly stained paperwork revealed renovation and development is happening (it's been going on for a while apparently). The bathroom was clean in heed of refurbishment though with cracks in porcelain I have seen such a huge amount of filler behind the taps though! We stayed in for some food on the Friday evening due to it raining so hard, the food was exactly the same in the bar or in the restaraunt being a hotel it was expensive and a limited menu considering the size of the place we had the Kent ish chicken which came with some veg in the price the same Kent ish chicken was in the grill menu however anything additional would have been extra! Son had a plate of sandwich and some crisps, food was nice though. Comfortable nights sleep and a nice hot tap shower in the bath led to a cooked breakfast personally a disappointment to me it was all dripping in oil bacon and sausage were nice but really potatoe wedges again cooked just in oil. Lovely fresh bread for toast and a nice selection of fruits yoghurts and pastries. Oil cooked tomatoes dry scrambled egg and if you got in the que at the right time a fried egg was yours for the taking. The tiniest mushrooms I would have loved some tinned plum tomatoes rather than the cheap beans and just cooked fresh tomatoes not nice. Overall the staff were again ver accommodating so 5 stars to them. Two nights in a centrall location was it worth the £190 room rate ? I may have been tempted to the premier inn next time.

Near to the city center (1 stop by using the bus) this hotel offers an accommodation with an interior which is far away of those in this price level and therefore by far exceeds the expectations, great. Fine food of the hotel-restaurant with a comparable surrounding as well gives the whole stay the taste to have gotten an unusual treat.

My wife and I stayed for the full weekend Friday to Sunday in a double en suite room. reception and check in was good the team were knowledgeable and efficient and even though they were busy had time to engage and be helpful. The hotel its self is an old manor house and is a bit rambly, the decor is a fitting for the house period but in need of refurbishment. It is warm and clean and well lit, we both have good mobility but if you don't you wouldn't have been able to access our room given number of steps/stairs. The room was dated and not that clean chipped paint work and a walk in wardrobe with illl fitting doors and damaged wall paper. The bed was comfy and clean as was the bathroom but again quite dated. We had meals in the hotel as we were part of a big group having booked the entire hotel for the weekend. The food was plentiful on the first night and the staff were attentive if a little inexperienced. We had ordered wine of the table which arrived not chilled and in need of ice which was a shame as the hotel charged premium prices on their wine. The function room was perfectly pleasant and quite well appointed. Breakfast was good, hot and plenty of choice. The coffee was nice as was the team my wives preference. The hotel made mention of parking being limited we were a group of 100 and no one found issue with parking on site which was great as it was a short walk into the city which was well worth a visit. The second night meal was amazing great quality beef hot and well flavoured. To sum up the hotel is a bit dated but priced accordingly i would go back and look forward to seeing the new build and refurb take shape.

This was the second time my wife and I have stayed there this year . The hotel is a lovely building just off main road so easy to find , ample parking, but some on grass so very muddy if park there. Check in was so easy staff extremely helpful, room 102 was a deluxe king very big room , bathroom was huge , pity some wall paper peeling off, but everything was extremely clean. Bed was very comfortable, room was very quiet , except when room next door run jacuzzi bath wondered what was going on to start with but did not last long. Location of hotel is superb for visiting Canterbury. My biggest grumble was same one as last time I stayed there, the lager served in lounge is no where's near cold enough really Need sort it out , we drink in sister hotel in Folkestone The Burlington,the beer there is top notch, but staff really helpful. Please bear in mind that's my own personal opinion, try for yourself. Breakfast is to die for plenty of choice hot and cold again staff extremely dutiful. Overall we enjoyed our stay and would definitely recommend and go again

A picturesque hotel, our room was beautiful. All amenities needed in the room and spotlessly clean. Staff professional and very friendly. Breakfast was a very enjoyable experience with a lovely ambience.

Had a one night stay over with our border collie , the staff are friendly and helpful,the room was clean and a good size our dog was welcome in the bar . I can recommend the burger and the full English in the morning.

This hotel is situated about 10 minutes from the City Centre so you don't have to drive into the City to enjoy it (this is a good thing traffic is a nightmare). The hotel food was very good and the rooms were a good size and very clean. Coffee making facilities available in the room. All the staff are very friendly and there is a good selection at the bar. Breakfast was buffet style, plenty of it and very hot. Great for a weekend away to visit the area. Would stay again.

Arranged a weekend of half board including a black tie gala dinner for over 90 guests. Hotel was excellent; management very attentive and all other members of staff provided outstanding service. Majority of guests gave us positive feedback on all aspects of the weekend, no complaints. The food was exceptionally good. Would recommend to anyone visiting Canterbury.

Our stay here matched up to other comments we read before booking. The decor in ther hotel is looking a bit tired, but service, food quality and cleanliness excellent. Our room looked out over kitchen and site for hotel extension. Understood latter, but former meant we had to keep window closed when kitchen in use due to cooking smells...no real problem. Staff polite and helpful. Proximity to bus stop and city centre ideal.

We had a group of eight for an afternoon tea birthday celebration. I dealt direct with the hotel and they arranged it all for us with a table for eight laid out in the bar at a good price. We were the only people there so not a great atmosphere but the food was nice, and they let us stay as long as we liked.

This hotel is the ideal wedding venue if you're looking for a beautiful and very unique gothic style building with distinctive, vintage decor (good job there are lots of signs up though as it is like a maze but this just added to the fun of trying to find my friend's & family's rooms the day before and I'm not known for my sense of direction at the best of times!!) I stayed in the stunning bridal suite and totally felt like a princess. All the staff we encountered during our 2 night stay were polite, well presented, professional and friendly. I was really impressed, my experience definitely felt like more than a 3 star hotel. Emma & Dean were brilliant right from our first enquiry to the wedding day itself, nothing felt like it was too much to ask. Lawrence was also great who kindly gave us a history of the building and even printed some bits out for us to keep. The food was delicious as well. Thank you guys and keep up the good work!

broken window, view from window a tip and smells coming from pipes omitting steam, mould on tiles round bath, only 2 tea bags(fairtrade) had to keep asking for more, and as for 24/7 sandwiches non existent but still on menu after questioning and getting no where and as for charging £13.50 each extra for breakfast which we did not take up

After our first full day of driving in England, I was excited driving into to this beautiful property. It was perfectly situated and we were looking forward to a lovely stay with a view of the grounds. Having made our reservation two months in advance (asking for an upper floor), we were given 1st floor room #109 overlooking some shabby windows and the flat roof ducting. First off, the toilet didn't flush properly. (You know the type that you have to flush and flush and still the toilet paper is left on the bowl?) When we called the desk, we were told they would "sort it out." So we left for dinner - a quick walk into town. When we returned, we were told that the plumbing was old and the hotel was booked up. No chance for a different room. As a Diamond Select member of Best Western, I expected better. Also, the folks upstairs were just walking normally but the ceiling was creaking very loudly. You could hear their every footfall. It sounded like they were moving the furniture! And the TV remote did not work. Details, details!

Lovely hotel throughout, excellent staff and service, only poor point was breakfast, no poached eggs offered, buffet plates for breakfast were cold, and the plates were very small to try and get more than a couple of items of food on the plate. The rooms were spacious, very clean and with excellent comfort.

Was cery happy with the hotel. The bar, the staff. Check in and out was easy. Location fantastic. Grounds were well kept. Wht not 5 star? Breakfast was far from exceptional and the only real disappointment.

I am being generous by giving them a 3/5! Pros - Good Location, 10 mins walk to the city - Friendly staff on reception - Reasonable room size, and fairly well equipped including aircon unit Cons - Very thin walls, you can hear every world from a conversation next door. 2 sleepless nights with people waking us up coming in at 1am, then putting their TV on at 7am - Poor Breakfast. Nothing is cooked to order, not even eggs. After tasting the hot food, which had been sat there a while, we just stuck to cereal & toast - came back in at 3pm after being out all day, and room still not cleaned - Bar food in the hotel expensive, and service poor.

Handy location within easy walking distance of the city centre. We were only at hotel for one night as we decided to stay overnight as were attending a concert at Kent County Cricket Club, which was about a 10-15 minute walk. Room was comfortable, on arrival we noticed the shower curtain was missing, but this was quickly resolved by reception. We were room hotel and choose not to take breakfast at the hotel which was a bit expensive and as the city centre was so close we strolled up to a local Wetherspoons Pub for breakfast for two and refill coffees for less than a tenner. We would though have no hestitation in staying at the hotel again.

This is a pleasant enough hotel and is kept very clean. Some of the older parts could do with renervating. We were part of a coach group and all had to dine at the same time.Dinner service was very chaotic , as although all meals were pre-ordered there were no table numbers ! So waiters wandered about asking did you order this or that etc. I blame the management, he did seem a bit of "Basil Faulty". The rest of the staff were very charming and helpful. The food was very very good. Breakfast was excellent. There was a nice sitting area in the garden but one had to exit the hotel via the main entrance and walk around the front to access it. It was about 10-15 mins walk to Canterbury and only about 10mins to St.Augistine's Abbey and St.Martins Church.

An unexpected disappointment. It certainly is bed and breakfast but that's about it. I can only assume they were under staffed and the cleaner forgot their glasses for our stay. The room look initally clean but closer inspection was surprisingly poor. One bath towel between 2 guest and a matress that seemed as old as the building. The bed side light looked ready for Halloween already. Then breakfast. It felt like my kids had been given the task to run the dining room. Cups, plates were scarce. Each were on request and singularly brought out. With each diner experiencing the same issue for the dining staff to show such surprise when they were again and again asked to provide cups and plates. The single unloved toffee yoghurt remained dateless but to achieve the point that it was provided. Hot water and coffee roulette took place. As identical vessels stood next to each other and with tea bag ready the coin toss took place to see weather you would get water or like a packet of Revels choose the coffee to shower your teabag.

We stayed here when we first moved to Canterbury. The staff was very pleasant, but they went above and beyond during our stay to help us with our difficult schedule. We couldn't be more appreciative of their assistance throughout out stay. The rooms themselves are quite nice if not a bit dated. Everything was clean, and the location of the hotel is great (close to city centre, but not smack in the middle of everything). The food from the dining area was good and there is a nice outside seating area. Wifi can be spotty throughout the building, just an FYI. This is a great place to stay when visiting Canterbury. To the staff, thank you again for everything!

It was a pleasant stay and the room was big and airy with a really comfortable bed and a nice roomy bathroom. The staff were friendly. But the breakfast room was hot and stuffy and not at all pleasant to sit in. A good breakfast should be one of the attractions to a hotel stay.

Good hotel, amenities were great and the staff were very helpful & friendly. Great location, walked into Canterbury town easily. We had a family room, very clean and enough space for 3 adults to not bump into each other, dated decor but that didn't bother me as it suited the hotel. Breakfasts were really good and we ate in the restaurant in the evening, food really great. Plenty of parking for visitors.

Second time of staying here, a little bit of a mix up, but I find the staff very helpful, and they try to sort things out quickly, breakfast is lovely lots of choice, and again if not there just ask and they will get it if possible, so overall good.

Great hotel about 10 minutes walk from historic town. Slight downhill walk into town so therefore slight uphill walk back. The hotel was great but the only downside was that our room overlooked a building site next door. Other than that a nice stay.

Stayed at this hotel on 31st July. Great location, stone throw from the centre of Canterbury. Can leave you car in the carpark while you explore the city. Also good breakfast. Rooms clean and tidy perhaps a little basic.

Ideal for visiting the town. The cathedral is only a short walk away. The hotel is location is very good, the rooms are comfortable. Had room only and went out for late breakfast and for an evening meal we went to a local Italian restaurant. Overall the weekend was good value for money

I had my wedding here absolutely beautiful cannot thank the staff enough for all of their help. Fantastic rooms, stunning building. Had some gorgeous photos taken in the gardens and plenty of room for the children to run around. The staff and the location made my wedding day xx

Stayed one night. Pleasant staff, all receptionists friendly and helpful. Alex in restaurant exceptionally good, shame the kitchen let him down at time. Evening meal excellent. Breakfast not so good. Not enough tables for guests, cooked breakfast plates way too small. No air conditioning in rooms so if you are staying later this week be aware!

This old but characterful building has been nicely done up by Best Western and so I can recommend it for business or holiday customers. If you are driving be aware that it's not briliantly signposted from the road, but look for the handsome old house set back and a driveway of trees. The welcome and the service were excellent. My room was fine, the internet worked well. The dinner, bar and breakfast were all good, too.

Firstly I would like to say I have stayed in a wide variety of hotels from city centre boutique, to country house, from Travel Lodges to five star and this Best Western has become one of my favourites. This is a wonderful looking building with that ‘country house' feel. The lounge and bar form a large area, with comfortable sofas and plenty of room if you want to have a quiet chat or meeting in one of the many nooks and crannies, or sit a work in peace and quiet. This is also a great area to relax with a G&T….it exudes ‘gentleman's club'. While all the staff at the Abbotts Barton are very helpful and polite, the bar staff standout - very friendly, polite professional and a credit to the hotel. The restaurant is slightly formal (which I like….nothing vulgar here) They produced a great breakfast, with a wide continental choice for those looking for something light and simple. The evening menu offers a good choice of modern British cuisine a good selection of wines and good service. I was travelling with my small dog and they had nicely put a blanket and bowl in the room for her (much appreciated when you have just arrived). In short I visit Canterbury about 4 times a year and I did try another hotel near my sister (in Ramsgate, dreadful hotel experience) and I have found myself coming back here. Now I know there are many great hotels in Canterbury but this one has become my favourite…. The ease of parking, dog friendly and it radiates that ‘country house' charm and yet is only a 5minute walk to the city and all it has to offer. Give this one a try and I think you'll be happy.

I really can't fault this hotel. The staff were really helpful & provide a map of the area. The room was lovely, very clean & the beds were sooo comfortable! We didn't eat dinner here but breakfast was a nice buffet with a good selection of cold & hot food. The location is great, only a 15 min or so walk to Canterbury centre or you can easily drive there in less then 5 min (note parking is £1.90/hr) Only thing to comment on was we were by far the youngest ones there at just under 40, not an issue for us but just something to be aware of. Families may feel out of place here.

Stayed here for one night through Best Western well worth joining if you haven't already. Really good rate through their rewards programme. Staff are so friendly and although we arrived early we were offered refreshments whilst waiting for our room to be ready. They even pulled the stops out and got our room ready earlier. Near to Canterbury town centre within walking distance. Rooms are nice and a good nights sleep was had. Will definitely return.

Not a great hotel arrived Friday night booked online couple of days before paid with my visa debit card lost my card next day , when I checked in they wanted to see my card which I didn't have they wanted to see i.d which I didn't have travelled there on the train had I'd known I would have bought my driving licence . The room had no air conditioning and couldn't open the windows so it was like a Furness so hot felt I couldn't breath . Next morning no hot water so couldn't shower . Did complain but all I got was a fan for the room and a apology. Next night had the fan made no difference. I would say avoid this hotel at all costs

The hotel was in a good location. The staff were friendly and the room was bright, airy, spacious and clean. The price we paid for the room was good. However, we choose to add breakfast and while the food was plentiful and well cooked I felt that it was over priced. We have had equally good breakfast at a more realistic price in lots of hotels. Canterbury has lots of cafes within a short walk of this hotel and if we stayed again I would look at getting breakfast in one of them

Lovely old hotel with the extensions decorated in the same old fashioned style. Love it. Small but pleasant garden. Ample off street parking in quiet location. Haven't been into town yet but it is supposed to be a short walk. Large comfortable room and bathroom. There could be more tea/coffee available. We ended up using our own supplies. Complimentary fruit at reception. Nice area for sitting and another for using the desk area if required. Great towels, water pressure & places to put things in the bathroom. Did not use the bar or restaurant facilities. Haven't had the breakfast yet but if it's bad I'll come back to comment. Can't imagine any issues. So pleased with this hotel (& other Best Western hotels) that we are going to join the rewards club

Stayed here one night to attend a party outside Canterbury. Friendly staff, helpful and the room was decent for the money. The best thing was quiet a/c on a sticky night. The shower was powerful and so it very much did what it said on the tin. Good location too as quiet but not too far from the centre.

A 3 night stay with meals a party of around 20 No complaints i think a fair price for the accommodation everyone seemed happy. Food was good, Very small plates for the buffet breakfast ?? Found it a bit odd, but i guess it cuts down on waste. Good location for the town 10 minute walk. Parking is ok, has a lift, found all the staff friendly and helpful What more do you need

We spent the weekend here as part of a coach trip. Beautiful house, lovely room but glad I wasn't the coach driver a bit tight to get through the gates. Would be no problem in a car. Superb location for walking into town

The location of this property is ideally located to tour Canterbury. Close to town, but offers a serene night's sleep. The staff was friendly and helpful. Our room exactly matched the room shown online. Highly recommend!

One night stay .. AA3 star hotel Good size family room with 4 single beds, comfortable beds, lovely bed linen, nice thick pillows, good size en-suite with big fluffy towels & toiletries. Tea & coffee in room. Good breakfast value for money. Only negative hotel bar unmanned in afternoon, had to ask at reception for service, & completely understaffed in evening, one member of staff for 80 guests! Long wait for a drink.

The bed had a large clump of human hair in it, the staff tried to blame the people who laundered the linen, despite the fact they made the bed and the hair was left in the middle of the mattress between the sheet and duvet. Also the hot water was not working, initially the staff claimed that it was working, then the manager said that the water had been switched off, then claimed that this was not the case it had just been turned down, and when other customers complained I heard them being treated awfully. Avoid the staff are shocking. When I made a complaint, they did everything to make it impossible to complain. They said I would be called back, but then did not contact me.

Very interesting hotel on the southern fringe of the city, just outside the walls: easy for the cathedral, shops and eating. Comfortable room, clean, good decs, hot water and comfortable bed. Excellent breakfast, reasonable bar (but avoid the stout). Quiet when I was there, though they may need to do some soundproofing, and check your tv remote works. Otherwise, all good, and good value.

I had a pleasant stay here. My single room was clean, had a well running airco, fast wifi and a nice coffee maker. The bathroom was maybe a bit outdated, but it was clean and spacious. The building looks like it has some history to it but I had no time to check this. Advantage is that the hotel is some 100 meters from the road so almost no car noises.

The hotel was great, rooms clean and tidy, Reception helpful and courteous,but food for groups was a disaster. Nothing on the menu to suit us and many of our colleagues. The head waiter on our first night after we complained said "it is what it is" and walked off. How discourteous.

This hotel is an easy 10 minute stroll into town. Free parking available in hotels car park outside the entrance. Our room apart from a brown mark on the side of the sink that we cleaned off ourselves was clean and tidy with a nice large Samsung TV. Bathroom was a nice size but again dated. Bath was narrow and when taking a shower the shower curtain stuck to me. I'm a tall bloke but far from a huge size. Floorboards creaked all around the hotel which woke me up at 6am. We had the complimentary breakfast. 4 staff working the dining room and only 4 people at one table were there when we walked in but no napkins on our table so we to find someone to ask and one of the hot containers with the beans and tomatoes was off so when I got back those were stone cold. God knows how they cope when it's full !! Apart from that all staff were pleasant Friendly and helpful. Would I stay here again ? Sorry I wouldn't. Nothing terrible but the place badly needs modernising.

A 10 min walk into Canterbury centre was easy and extremely convenient. We had a lovely welcome from a lady behind the reception desk- very friendly and helpful. Room was a perfect size and comfy bed. The only thing that let it down was the bar. The young gentlemen behind the bar was rude. We had no greeting when we got to the bar (unlike at the reception and restaurant) We ordered two gins and a water. He served us the gins and took our payment. I politely reminded him above water and his response was very abrupt, ‘yes I'll get it once I've done this'. Surely you serve all the drinks first, then take payment? The breakfast was lovely and all the waiting staff were hard working and pleasant.

Nice old style hotel with lots of lounge areas. Take the short Pilgrims Way walk to town to appreciate the history. Dinner was good. Car parking great, wifi annoying drop outs. We had a large deluxe room but the bed had seen better days, and the banging noise from the bar door underneath our room was loud and woke us up numerous times, so much so that at 11pm one night when we went down to complain and change rooms if possible the staff obliged by keeping the problematic door open and we slept ok......but not the next night with staff going in and out creating the annoying door closing noise that disturbed our sleep. Not acceptable. Please fix it. Sleep is more important than any other facility provided in any hotel.

Hotel catered for 80 guests in the group - our room was comfortable, spotless and well served by housekeeping. Breakfast was ideally suited to our needs with eggs cooked to our request. Evening dinner was well presented and served by polite staff - the choice for the group was small - but apparently agreed by the organisers. After saying that - the quality of the food was very good. The main car park was full on arrival but the overflow on the grass served us well. The public areas were well furnished and comfortable. This was our first visit to Canterbury. The hotel is well placed and we would choose this location for future visits.

I stayed in room 4 there where only 4 problems with the room the 1st problem is that the clock on the tv was the wrong time by 5 minutes. the 2nd problem was the evening meal on the Friday night everybody had to wait at least 15 minutes to get served and then some of our group got our starters and some of us did not get them until the others had finished there starters. the 3rd problem was that there was no bathroom fan to get rid of the steam from the bath and shower. apart from those problems everything else was great. the fourth problem was there is no hotel sign on the road side to say t it the abbots barton hotel so alot of people trying to find it pass the hotel.

Just had a really delicious meal at the Best Western Abbots Barton hotel. I recommend the haddock rare bit to start and the succulent lamb and dauphinoise potatoes! Superb dish! Lovely treacle sponge pudding too. All locally sourced, fresh ingredients. As well as the lovely food, we had fantastic service and a great chat with Peter who was front of house this evening. What a lovely and interesting chap! A great evening

Our room was clean and quiet. The bed was comfortable and the all white, tiled bathroom well presented. WiFi worked well. The large, rambling hotel has an interesting history and is very close to the city centre. A great place to stay for one night or a longer break.

The staff at this hotel were fantastic, from our welcome to the time we checked out all members of staff greeted us with a smile and were very helpful. The rooms were nice, a little out dated but I think this is part of the charm of the hotel. Plenty of free parking available and it's just a 5/10 minute walk into the city centre. The only negative was the creaking of the floorboards early in the morning. Would highly recommend.

This was second visit for a family party. A warm welcome at reception and a well appointed room, large with charm and good appointments. The hotel retains much old world charm and this offers the ability for people in a large group to sit in different places and then move round. The food provided was very good. Staff are always friendly and helpful.

We were a group of around 40, with breakfast included & a 3 course evening meal. The waiters were excellent and the food menu was adventurous, beautifully cooked and presented. Would definitely visit here again. The only gripe was the beer on tap wasn't fantastic and it would have been great to have had a cider on tap too. Big thanks to all the staff who were very friendly and helpful

We stayed for three nights as part of a group of cyclists. Rooms were clean and comfortable, although like previous reviewers we could hear the people above us walking around their room (it didn't bother us). Staff were friendly and helpful. The food was excellent and they managed to serve a large group efficiently at dinner. Breakfast was very good. Couple of points which would have improved it, some power points next to the bed for recharging phones (which double as my alarm clock) would have been nice and I thought the bar prices were a little high. Could also do with some permanent rails for locking bikes to. Information in the room says they are building a spa which accounts for the building site at the back. It is short walk into Canterbury so the location was great for those not cycling. Would stay again.

The hotel is really well located within 15 minutes walk to the center and the cathedral so here it is perfect. The staff are friendly, if some a touch more efficient than others, rooms are reasonable sized and comfortable, clean and peaceful despite being on a main road. But, it lets itself down on tiny details: for example the car park has limited capacity. So why do I see staff parking in it, when they have a patch of grass out front rather than sending customers there? Why Hoover the carpet outside of the entrance to the restaurant at peak times on Sunday morning when our breakfast is disturbed? (and on Easter Sunday)...! If you want something apparently simple like tea and scones - only possible if you book at least 48 hours I advance. Not possible to have a spur of the moment decision in this hotel. They order limited quantities of some foods ( which I do understand) - but just 3 steaks? No iron and ironing board to freshen up creased clothes - even simple Holiday Inn give you these... .......

great value for the money went at short notice for dinner out in Canterbury with my son. I checked in with no problem two staff on duty very friendly. later I had a drink in the bar that to was a good move yet again friendly staff. I would recommend this hotel 100% its also just a short easy walk to city centre

The staff are amazingly friendly helpful and efficient. We stayed with our dogs and they were made very welcome. We found some dog friendly beaches, shops and cafes close by. The rooms are really clean and comfortable and the location is excellent for a short walk into Canterbury. We would definitely stay again.

I thoroughly enjoyed my stay here as a sole traveler. I ate in the restaurant every night and had a brilliant sandwich for my lunch on arrival. Room clean place has parking and it is not far to walk into to town. Canterbury is flat! Chef is good my minute steak juicy and the chips superb. breakfast fab...what's not to like. Very reasonable charge

Hotel is in an excellent location. We walked into the town centre and friends who were with us walked to the cathedral. A few of our friends are over 80 and managed the walk both ways. Another day we drove to the coast and visited Ramsgate, Broadstairs, Margate and Westgate where we had a excellent lunch at The Swan, Westgate overlooking the sea. The coast was about half an hour's drive from the hotel.. our very comfortable hotel room was on the 3rd floor. Meals on each day of our visit were excellent, served very efficiently by excellent staff.

The Abbots Barton Hotel is well appointed both inside and out. It's located in a relaxing setting, a short walk from the city centre with ample free parking. The Hotel is extremely clean and comfortable. The restaurant is excellent. Breakfast is superb, quality & service are maintained even at peak times. The staff are helpful, friendly & professional. A special mention needs to be made of Jude in reception for providing excellent customer service, also Joseph and Peter, the reception manager.. In the restaurant, Patrick provided excellent service and Flori, the restaurant breakfast manager is always a delight to deal with. A great place to stay. If you choose this hotel you won't be disappointed!

Treated the wife to afternoon tea here and from the moment we arrived we were well treated and the service for our food was awesome even the waiter leaving us alone to enjoy our food but also asking if we needed more drinks, The setting of the hotel is lovely and well orf the main road,

Afternoon Tea treat with my son and two of our friends. We were greeted on arrival and shown to the dining area, a lovely lady took our orders for drinks and as we had already booked our afternoon tea was served with our drinks. We had a lovely assortment of sandwiches, delicious homemade scones and several small cake slices. All were fresh. Thick clotted cream and Jam in bowls to accompany the scones. The lady asked us midway through if we required any more to drink. The servings were generous. Staff attentive and polite. My son is vegetarian and the chef made him an extra plate of Houmous/Spinach and Cheese/pickle. Would definitely recommend and would book again. Our reservation was made through Groupon. Thoroughly enjoyed. Thank you.

Due to the rapid decline of our favourite hotel, we decided to try a new venue,and the abbots has met our.expectations,for those of your readers who have found the falstaff to have gone downhill you should try the abbots manor it is set back off the main road into canterbury.but only five minuits walk into the town center,the grounds are quite large and picturesquewith a large car park,inside is in keeping with the age of the building with a warm and old world feeling, the staff were warm and helpfull and quite professional.we arrived on the day to a large function, but when we got to our room we could hear nothing,the room was clean and adequate,and the bed was extremly comfortable. We only had a evening meal,but it was very enjoyable and the sevice was excellent, overall, for a first visit a most enjoyable experience.

Stayed in the Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel 36 New Dover Rd, Canterbury CT1 3DU between 20th-23rd March 2019 with my partner for a short three day break in Canterbury. We arrived at the hotel late in the afternoon of the 20th March after a long drive from Oxford (M20 is a nightmare, avoid it if you can, and the traffic in and around Canterbury is horrendous). There is a reasonable sized car park and an ‘overflow' car park (if you can call it that) on the grass lawn at the front. Arriving at the time we did, there was no problem getting a car parking spot. I did notice over the days that we were there that the car park does get very busy during the evening, depending on what's going on at the hotel (conferences, meetings etc.) Anyway we were checked in with the minimum of fuss by a very helpful and efficient gentleman on reception (but why don't the hotel do this on line?) We made are way to our room which was at the back of the hotel on the ground floor, first impressions were a bit mixed, yes it was a large room, although it hadn't been decorated for some time, there was a large built-in wardrobe, but it looked like the shelves had been put by the hotel handyman, and the bathroom was defiantly passed its sell-by date, firstly the tiles were very old fashioned, repairs had been made to the ceiling and to the tiles area around the sink, and had been very badly and amateurishly repaired. In the main bedroom the air-conditioning on the wall was fitted badly, firstly it wasn't straight and the conduit running from the unit to the wall was loosely fitted. There also a distinct lack of plug sockets in the room, in the whole of the room I could only find one double socket and one single socket, and if you think the TV and the kettle were in two of the available sockets it only left one free socket (If you think how many electrical items people carry with them on their travels these days i.e. mobile phones, tablets, laptops etc.). On the plus side there were plenty of nice white fluffy towels (the bath towels were huge!!) and there were plenty of ‘smellies' (i.e. shampoo etc.), there were tea and coffee, and electric kettle , there was a flat screen TV with all the ‘Freeview' channels and the ‘wonky' air conditioning actually worked extremely well, (for some reason the whole of the hotel building was always very hot, including our room and once or twice it was easier to switch the air-con on for ten-fifteen minutes, rather than open the window and it worked very efficiently), and there was Wi-Fi (never used it, but did hear some adverse comments from other guest) but the main downfall of the room was outside the window, which looked out onto a building site, that hadn't been worked on for some time, and there was various bits building material scattered on the rough ground at the side of the hotel, and at the time what a plywood gate blocking it off from the car park, suffice to say it wasn't a pleasant site. After unpacking I had a shower and we walked down into Canterbury itself, which is only a ten or fifteen minute walk, and had something to that eat there (of which there are plenty, I'll come back to restaurants later). Later that night we had a ‘nightcap' in the bar, which I would describe as decorated ‘traditionally'. On subsequent evenings particularly the second evening I did have a issue with the bar staff wanting the paper wallet that your key card comes with, they actually wanted me to go back to my room to get it, the clear implication was that she wasn't going to serve me without it, anyway common sense prevailed. That night went to bed, and had a really good night's sleep, the bed was very comfortable, but again it was very hot in the room. In the morning, went for breakfast, there's a wide variety of food on offer ranging a ‘full English' but also cereals, fruit, yogurts, croissants, fruit juice, tea coffee etc. (surprisingly rhubarb and lime juice, that was a first!) and the sausages for the ‘full' English were fantastic. However there seem to be on an ongoing problem with the toaster, one the first day it wasn't working at all (It was quite funny seeing the staff on all fours under the tables trying to find the problem with the electrics) The second day the toaster was working of sorts, but was very temperamental, and the third was the same, talking to other guest many made a comment about ‘the toaster' (it seem to have attracted notoriety well beyond its function!!) note to the hotel management ‘buy a new toaster !!' The breakfast was included in the deal for the three day stay, so didn't have to buy it separately, but if you did it was £13.50 (in my opinion it's not worth £13.50). Places to eat in Canterbury; there so many bars and restaurants along St Georges Street, (the main road / walkway through the centre of the city) enough for every tastes (and all within walking distance of the hotel), but my main recommendation would be the ‘The Corner House' restaurant, its actually address is 1 Dover Street, but really it's on the main Upper Bridge Street near to the junction with New Dover Road, so it's only a short walk from the hotel, superb food. In conclusion, this is not a bad hotel, but there is considerable room for improvement. Without doubt it main attraction is its proximity to the centre of Canterbury (like I said 10-15 minutes' walk) and the fact it has car parking,(did speak a few times to German guest at the hotel who stays regularly at this hotel, as his daughter is at local college/university, he said parking was a big issue in Canterbury) but there are issues, the general décor of the hotel is ‘traditional' and generally quite somber, and it won't be to everyone's taste. The rooms would defiantly benefit from a ‘spruce' up (particularly the bathroom), with particular references to our room, something needs doing with the ‘building site' at the back of the hotel, and to put it bluntly it's an eyesore. Would I recommend this hotel, well not at the moment, but with a bit of work it would become a very nice hotel, like I said before its location is it main plus point.

A very disappointing hotel experience where we had our sleep ruined thanks to creaky floorboards. This issue was apparent from within ten minutes of entering our room in the second floor. The noise of people walking on the floor above us was way beyond what was acceptable. We hoped that it didn't become an issue. Alas at 3am that night someone above us got up to go to the toilet. I was shocked awake by the noise. I'm not a light sleeper. I was awake for two hours then feel asleep again. I lasted an hour before the same thing happened again. We approached reception about this and asked for a different room. They were full. We explained the situation, and the two individuals at reception seemed to be aware that there was an issue as they volunteered it was being fixed during a future renovation project. They offered the consolation that whomever was above us was leaving that day, implying there was a chance the situation would be resolved by someone else who was less noisy replacing them. They had no solutions and could not move us. We returned to our room after an enjoyable day out in Canterbury and fell asleep. At 5am the person above us got up, waking me again. I was stuck awake. I can't emphasise enough how loud this noise is in the room we were in. I don't believe the people above us were sing anything untoward; just walking around their room. The problem is the hotel, not the people staying in it. The hotel need to address this problem. Firstly they clearly know there is an issue as evidenced by my conversation with their reception staff. It is of no consolation to us that this problem will be fixed in future. We had to deal with it during our stay. No solution was offered to us and no attempt to make the situation right was offered. We were extremely polite, perhaps much too polite, but there was no suggestion of any attempt to correct our experience with a discount, or anything else whatsoever. What a contrast with a hotel in Istanbul last month, which left us a bottle of wine and a very nice gift after the hot water was off for 30 mins; a much less serious issue and one that we did not even complain about. Our weekend was not ruined but i sit here today having not slept properly for two nights in a row because of an issue that the hotel is aware of, but refused to address. We paid almost two hundred pounds for our two night stay. This is not good enough, but perhaps most importantly the complete lack of any effort to address it makes it doubly bad. I highly recommend avoiding this hotel until they resolve the structural problems that could mean you end up in a room that is so noisy you either cannot sleep, or you get randomly woken in the night by the movement of people in other rooms.

stayed for two nights in a jaccuzi room. the hotel is a nice traditional hotel and our room was nice and spacious. the hotel was not overcrowded and the bar in the evening was quiet. breakfast was good although our pancakes were not cooked and green when they were served. but taken away. on first night we ate in the hotel, it was ok but not anything special. on balance would not hesitate to return. staff helpful and friendly

I stayed here overnight while working in the area. Nice hotel, staff were friendly & polite. The room was clean and the bed comfy. It was nice to find the bathroom had a large bath, great to be able to have a nice long soak after a hard days work. The food was good although a bit on the pricey side. ( Evening meal & breakfast) Plenty of parking available and the city centre is only a short walk away. I would stay here again....

I was upgraded on arrival. The room was a surprise with a separate sitting room and bedroom. The only problem was the lack of a proper shower to stand in. Reception staff were very helpful. I had my evening meal in the bar which only had myself in it and served the same food as the restaurant. Bar staff were very friendly and attentive.

Rooms a good size. Very clean, lots of hot water, A big group with pre-ordered food which arrived hot, all served together and excellent quality. Waiters were superb at all meals.Efficient, discrete service. All staff helpful. Bar/lounge areas good 5 minute walk into the centre of Canterbury. Couldn't fault it.

This is a historic hotel set in beautiful grounds just outside the Canterbury town centre. The interior of this hotel is to a very high standard. The staff are extremely friendly and helpful. The room was clean and well appointed. It was air conditioned and had a TV and kettle amongst other things. The bathroom was equipped with both a bath and a shower. The shower was excellent providing both temperature and pressure in abundance. There is onsite parking available on a first come first serveybasis. This hotel is very dog friendly and dogs are allowed in almost all areas of the hotel. There is a large lawn at the front and a dog bin on site so disposing of dog poop is easy and convenient. There is both a restaurant and a bar within the hotel. Food can be eaten in either location but dogs are not permitted in the restaurant so dog owners will have to eat in the bar. The food served is very good and is fancy enough to please the most sophisticated of tastes. It features dishes such as Pan-Roasted Fillet of Cod and Roasted Maple & Balsamic Aubergine. I had the Sirloin Steak and it was delicious. I love a good steak and this one rates among the best of them.

Overall a good stay. Hotel a bit old but functional. Quiet location, close to town. You can leave your car and walk. Staff very friendly. Maybe a bit more variety on the breakfast side. Full English breakfast is nice but not everyones choice, trying to eat healthier.

This was a lovely hotel that was very accommodating. The staff at the front desk - Gary and Sarah were lovely and exemplary in looking after the guests. They were relaxed, warm and professional. The room was comfortable and had everything one required. The grounds were lovely and the hotel itself is stunning with long classic hallways and rich carpets which added to the charm so if you are looking for something modern, then this is not the hotel for you. The staff that we met in the hallways were friendly and welcoming and seemed happy just like the front staff and restaurant staff. In fact the only exception to the professional standard was the Restaurant Duty Manager on our first morning, who seemed to not enjoy her job and hardly spoke to the guests. This was a shame as this is a vital point of interaction with the guests and she had very little motivation or skill at addressing a minor problem due to disorganisation that meant I waited 20 minutes for bread that never came. I do not like to give negative reviews, unless warranted, and she could easily have been having a bad day...so I am happy to give her the benefit of the doubt - this was the only negative but it did impact our stay as it was our initial impression that was marred.

I arrived after a long and exhausting trip and they made me feel as comfortable as if I were at home. They have a friendly proffesional team and very clean, classy rooms and lounge. Breakfast is very enjoyable.

The staff are excellent, the location fantastic, the hotel looks stunning, very reasonable price and they accepted our alsation rotweiller. First class hotel. I would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone.

Booked on the off chance it would be ok as everywhere else was full. The hotel was a little dated but we were pleased with our stay on the third floor room 318. A decent sized room with fairly new decor and very clean and dust free. Very nice and helpful staff set in pleasant grounds with large car park. A five minute walk to town so not too far and closer than we thought. Overall a nice cozy place.

Room was adequate. Bathroom was tiny no bath toilet seat wonky loo roll holder hanging off. Heating was stuck on air conditioning not working. Windows opened wide which should have been restricted due to being on the first floor. Paper thin walls. Refurb required all over really.

Location of the hotel is very good, easy walking distance in to the City Centre and shops, Cathedral, restaurants, etc. We stayed Saturday and Sunday night. There was a function being held at the hotel on the Saturday that meant elements of the hotel were busy - this included the car park. An overflow car park was in fact the front lawn, ample space but due to the wet weather somewhat of a mud bath to be negotiated - car and people. Our room was comfortable, clean and fine as was the bathroom. Breakfast was busy but service was prompt as was any food ordered from the menu (rather than the buffet). Hotel bar service was slow - the barmen having to leave the bar to deliver drinks to the restaurant........ In addition, though seating in the bar area was available, there were several glasses, plates, etc left from previous visitors that had not been cleaned away. We stopped in the bar for drinks before going out for dinner and afternoon tea settings remained. This could be improved.

As usual all was to our full satisfaction. We had a great stay and are looking forward to our next visit .. Thank you to all the staff especially at the reception. The beds are very confortable which is for couples in the sixties a must to take care of when booking a hotel.

we had a nicely decorated room on the top floor with a large comfortable bed. The bathroom was completely tiled which looked beautiful but felt a bit cold (February). Nice fluffy towels. The only complaint I have is that the rooms were not soundproof, and the floors were very creaky but it is a very old building so I think you would expect this. Breakfast was very good with both continental and English available and the evening meal was good too. Staff very pleasant and helpful.

Stayed Friday and Saturday night with my sister. The interior hasn't been refurbed for decades, wall paper peeling off walls, beds uncomfortable. Worst of all was the noise from the floor above, a lot worse than your average creaky floorboards. Woken up at 1sm by god knows what going on upstairs that made us feel like we were on a sinking pirates ship with creaking everything. Asked to be moved for the second night. Moved to top floor so no horrendous creaking etc. Again, dated furniture and beds, wallpaper peeling off etc. Customer service was truly awful. A pair of miserably staff on front desk barely acknowledged us and there wasn't a hint of a welcoming atmosphere. Will never stay here again. Unless you want to time travel to 1970 then avoid this place.

First impressions, on the phone and in person, both with Jude in reception, were extremely good. Jude has the right attitude to go far in the hotel industry. Without her and the young man, Oliver, who lugged our 4 cases up to our room, this would have been a two star review at best. The room was comfortable, apart from an unpleasant smell which diminished with both windows left open. Possibly the room had had a dog in it or the previous occupant had perhaps not opened the windows at all. Could still smell it a bit on the third day. Think it should be investigated. The bathroom was modern with plenty of hot water and beautiful white fluffy towels. The bath had been damaged probably by a workman's tools - easy enough to paint over with enamel paint I would have thought. Room 124. The next day I meet the Lithuanian cleaning lady, Alina, who was most helpful, fetched me facecloths and generally cleaned very fastidiously. The main thing that lets the hotel down is the food and the waiting staff. I imagine the menus are a budget price. We had to choose our choice of menus for the dinners before we arrived on Friday morning. The food was exact, so if someone in the group forgot their choice, by the time the last person was served, they said they had run out of soup, ok r cheesecake, etc. The second night the menu some had chosen was baked cod, and they produced very brown haddock fish cakes, not the same thing at all. The chef agreed to provide 4 portions of cod, but it was brought out only partially cooked. The menus are not very inspired 3 course meals. Smoked mackerel for two meals and twice, risottos. The two fish meals were just steamed fish with no sauces, pale and very unappetising. The Smoked mackerel starter on the second day was excellent, and on the first day, dry and tasteless. The chicken on the first night was really nice. The last night, a Sunday, was roast beef, very brown and tasteless, Yorkshire pudding, a solid lump of dough with crispy edges, but mainly inedible. The whitebait starter was excellent but on the small side, and the puddings were attractive and tasty. The wines weren't brilliant, the cheaper end of the spectrum largely very unremarkable. However there was a quite good Malbec for £27 that we enjoyed. Avoid the Chilean Sauvignon Blanc, vinegary and thin. The waiting staff, on the whole, were uninterested and generally unhelpful, although there was an Italian lad, Pierro, with an amusing moustache and limited English, who was willing and good humoured. But the young man in charge at breakfast was unpleasant and rude, and I imagine the rest of the staff will copy his attitude eventually. I don't think I would go there again.

Stayed as part of a group booking. The reception was extremely efficient with no worries about luggage which was delivered to your room. We found all the staff to be friendly and helpful. The rooms were spacious comfortable, airy and very clean as was the bathroom. One small criticism is that on the top floor you cannot move without floor boards creaking. There is no way one person could arise without disturbing both your partner and possible the person in the next room. Do not know is the creaks went to the floor below. Having said that we found the whole hotel to be very comfortable and would definitely stay there again. It is difficult to judge the dinner menu as being in a party we had all pre-ordered on a limited choice menu.This food was average no more. However if the breakfast is to be judged by it was excellent . One point we found good was continual replenishment so no food was ever standing too long. The choice was excellent. All in all a good hotel to stay in for a short visit to Canterbury and worth recommending.

Love this place. Had a nice walking tour around the hotel, mesmerizing landscape it has. Highly recommended for people who loves nature. Staff is always nice and polite. When Im around, Im going to choose this place.

Lovely hotel. We stayed one night in the 3x single beds room. Very clean, spacious and warm. Slept easy (although we were out til 3am) Breakfast was nice and also has the option to be cooked to order. Would recommend the hotel and would return. Great value for money. Staff very friendly and helpful.

Stayed for 1night to visit Canterbury and we were allocated a spacious room which was very comfortable. Bar and lounge area pleasant to relax in and hotel breakfast was above average especially quality of hot buffet servings Restaurant for dinner also recommended and compares favourably with those in the city centre Hotel is just a 10 minute walk from the historic centre and parking is free. Good value especially during off peak periods.

We done a last minute booking and got great deal including breakfast. We arrived early parked in large spacious car park, hotel was more than happy park there and enjoy sites of Canterbury. Check was made so easy staff were super efficient, we had room on third floor easy access with lift . The room was huge and the bed so big I could lay across it , bathroom really big with jacuzzi bath and shower there was All very clean and well laided out plenty storage space. The bar area was lovely lots nooks and crannies to sit in nice and cosy, one bad bit for me the lager was not cold enough but that's my preference, the bar man was also our breakfast waiter nothing was to much trouble for him ,he was great. I would definitely recommend staying there

Stayed here for one night,lovely hotel plenty of parking.The staff are very helpful,had an evening meal in the restaurant which was delicious and well cooked,the staff were very efficient and a big shout out to Peter the bar/restaurant manager who was very attentive and friendly and very expert at his job.Will definitely go back and recommend this hotel if visiting Canterbury .

A convenient hotel a short walk from the centre of Cantebury. The hotel receptionist was quick with the check in. I found our room was dated but clean. the bathroom was ok but hair was found on the toilet seat. The staff were polite and helpful. The bar area was also dated. Probably would stay again.

We were here for a Christmas party so only stayed one night. The staff were all very friendly, accommodating and helpful. The food was really good and all of our party enjoyed themselves. The hotel itself has a lot of character and the lounge area by the bar was lovely to relax in.

Just back from another nights stay here and this time we requested a room not overlooking the building works and were given a fabulous room. Staff very friendly, room ready even though arrived early. Breakfast was excellent. A brilliant place to stay when visiting Canterbury.

We stayed here for a couple of nights for a visit to the city. The hotel is very well located for this, (only 10 mins walk). The hotel is an old building and in keeping to this the inside is decorated in keeping with the style of the building. Our room was a good size, clean and comfortable. Our only criticism would be the creaking floorboards, which also reflect the age of the building. Got a bit annoying when the guests in the room above seemed to move around a lot :( We had B&B and the breakfast buffet was very good, sufficient to set us up for the day ahead. All the staff we came in contact with were very pleasant and friendly.

We stayed here Wednesday 12 December 2018 in (I believe it was) room 116. Lovely hotel in nice quiet location, only ten minutes (walk) from the centre of Canterbury. Nice big room with all mod cons in keeping with the age of the beautiful building. Unfortunatly the most important thing: the mattrasses were horrible, and we didn't sleep very well, if not at all.The springs were constantly poking in the back and on one of the matrasses it seemed you were gonna roll off, because it was sloping to the right so badly. When I checked the next morning and pulled off the sheet, I was confronted with two very old, dirty and stained mattrasses, well over their use by date. Even made a picture of them to show my husband who was taking a shower. I guess a hotel in this price range should have better mattrasses to ensure guests' sleep. In 2017 we stayed for a couple of nights in this BW as well, in another room and slept very well, so I guess we had new mattrasses in that room. I informed reception when we checked out, and the receptionist said he would tell maintenance. So hopefully a next guest will sleep better in this room. I did not book through trivago of booking, but directly with BW.

Stayed one night at this hotel...had a friendly welcome when we arrived. Very Clean and comfortable room, comfortable bed and tea and coffee making facilities etc. The hotel is only about 10 minute walk into the town too! Would recommend this hotel.

I stayed for a single night and much enjoyed myself at Abbot Barton. I received personalised care at the restaurant and the food was delicious. Plaice and banoffee pie was my unorthodox choice but they both went down very well. The building is charming, and you might as well be far out of town for the feeling of quiet, but it is in fact very close to Canterbury city centre and easily accessible.

Nice hotel, great location, staff very efficient and friendly, room immaculate and comfortable. I had a fantastic burger for dinner in the cosy bar and there is a good gin selection too. Excellent value and would definitely return.

Our 2 night stay was our first visit here, although we use Best Western hotels frequently. Parking was fine, and the location is pretty good - a 10 minute stroll into the city, and passing a convenient Waitrose en route. All staff were friendly and helpful throughout. I liked the vibe of the hotel, traditional and with some character, but not tired. Our room, 104, was excellent very roomy with desk and soft seating. The lighting was really good, which is not always the case. So one can read comfortably at the desk, coffee table or on the bed. We were impressed with the provided coffee pod espresso machine. (So we didn't need to unpack our portable Nespresso machine!) Wifi was good. There was a remote for controlling the heating/air-con. I got the room to my liking, although not totally sure how I achieved this. Breakfast was very good, many choices of fruit juice, including rhubarb, and the usual buffet and cooked to order selections. We ate in the 1 AA rosette restaurant for the first night with pretty high expectations. The food was very good. But note that there is no table d'hote offering (unless they neglected to give us this menu). It is easy, without being super extravagant, to get the bill pretty high for 3 courses and wine. It was not poor value for money, and certainly convenient to be able to retire after dinner to a comfy lounge area or to your room. But overall we liked this hotel very much, and intend coming back on a regular basis.

I've been staying here for a week at a time on business at least half a dozen times a year for the past three years. I've tried other hotels in Canterbury, but I've kept on coming back .It's the old fashioned comforts and it's very English eccentricities which draw me back. When I emerge from the subdued conversation and quiet background jazz of the dining room,I momentarily lose my sense of direction. There is a choice corridors and stairways, all soft carpeted with a fleur de lys design, of soft golden wall paper and many gilt frames reproductions . Perhaps I should sink into one of the many inviting armchairs and sofas in the three rooms of the bar; or else just go back up to the cosy chintz of my bedroom and lay in a hot bath. I feel comfortable here, as one does in warm good quality slippers and cardigan. The building has the feel and look of a Victorian folly,put up by a shipping magnate ,to impress his friends and help his social climbing. It is baronial, notwithstanding the modern plumbing,air conditioning and free wifi. I eschew the choice of eateries in Canterbury for dinner here, and wonder why people are not flocking to join me. There is off road car parking, helpful and friendly service, and an excellent menu and wine list. This week I ate a delicious leek and potato soup, pan seared calves liver on delicious mashed potatoes garnished with lardons ,onion crisps and a luscious red wine sauce.Yesterday it was an hours d'oevre of citrus cured trout followed by a wonderfully fresh steam rolled plaice garnished with new potatoes, samphire and citrus vinaigrette. The breakfasts are copious and excellent. If you are working in Canterbury and need to place to put your feet up in comfort and quiet at the end of the day,this must be it. But if you are holiday in here, it is really quite romantic, with its large garden and tables at which to enjoy an aperitif

Me and my partner stayed here for 2 nights while on a weekend getaway to Canterbury. I booked this hotel as it was something different from a Travelodge/Premiere Inn, looked really nice and was a short 10 minute walk from the main town centre. The hotel defiantly met my expectations and was a really nice pleasant stay. All the staff we met were professional and friendly/welcoming. The hotel grounds were beautiful surroundings aswell as inside the hotel itself. Very clean and tidy and well looked after. The room was decent size with a comfy bed and a freeview tv. Wifi is included free for you're stay however not the best signal at times. We did not dine in the restaurant as the prices were quite high so ordered a delivery instead. There is a Odeon Cinema 10 minutes away from the hotel which is a good idea if you fancy spending the evening seeing a movie. Overall our 2 night stay here was enjoyable and lovely experience and I highly recommend this hotel and would visit again. On our last day we had room service breakfast brought to our room and it was defiantly worth the price we paid, served with a smile and delicious food. Defiantly a 10/10 keep up the good work.

Lovely hotel near the heart of Canterbury - only 15 minutes walk from the Cathedral. Staff on reception and in the bar very friendly. Really quaint decor with a spacious bar/restaurant area. The rooms were a great size (stayed in a twin), clean and tidy with a shower & bath. In the morning the breakfast was lovely with something for everyone, full fry up or many continental options. Would recommend and would stay here again!!

Arrived at hotel at 1.20pm asked at the bar if they did any snacks or food and the lady said no so we just got a packet of crisps after a two and a half journey we really wanted a sandwich or the like. Next day we found out that bar snacks are available daily until 2pm!! All other staff in the restaurant and reception were very helpful. Hotel is a bit dated but overall we had an enjoyable time and the location was good for walking into the town.

We stayed at this hotel when visiting family in Kent. The staff were really friendly and when it says dog friendly they really mean it only place dog couldn't go was main restaurant. The set us up for our dinner in the bar and provided a blanket for the dog to lay on whilst we ate. Good range of gins in the bar, dinner was delicious well presented and a good choice of food in both taste and price. Breakfast was self service although you could also order from the extensive menu The rooms are clean and comfortable not the largest but plenty big enough for a few days with plenty of storage. Shower hot and powerful. Overall will stay here again when visiting Canterbury area.

last night my partner and I went to the Abbots Barton for a dinner date. The food was well priced and very good. The service was really good our waiter, was a gentleman by the name of Peter who was attentive professional and friendly. one of very few waiters that have the balance right. he helped the evening run smoothly.

Lovely hotel, staff friendly and helpful, rooms very comfortable and clean, good value. Good location as only short walk into the town centre and free parking. Would definately stay here again. Well recommended

My third annual visit to the hotel for a bridge weekend. I find that the staff are really friendly and welcoming. There is ample parking. It's an easy walk into town. The hotel is set in large enough grounds that make it peaceful at night, the rooms are comfortable and thereis always plenty of hot water.

Clean, good sized room. Comfortable bed. Friendly staff. Didn't eat at the hotel so can't comment on that. One downside is there is only 1 socket in the room so you can't charge a phone and laptop at the same time! Would like more coffee and milk in the room but it's the standard you get in every hotel...I just like my coffee. Other than that, not a bad stay.

I booked a single room for the night and they upgraded me to a double bed so I would be comfier which was lovely!! The bed was a dream, so comfy and has such a nice sleep. All the facilities are fantastic, lovely bath and little touches with the soap and shower bits are always great. The staff were all friendly and welcoming too. Thanks a BUNCH!

Stayed here for one night. Arrived late and left early, so didn't use the restaurant facilities, but the comfort of the room for a stop over was great value. The bed was comfortable, the shower was good. The staff were helpful even though we checked in really late. The grounds are attractive and it's handy to the cathedral. Would recommend.

I can't recommend this hotel. Mainly because it is rather corporate and doesn't feel as if anyone cares. I attend meetings here semi regularly and whilst it is a great venue and location, close to the centre of Canterbury, there is no feel of a guiding hand who cares. Disappointingly anonymous.

A very nice hotel, comfortable and with friendly staff. We were arranging a large group weekend and the hotel's group organiser couldn't have been more helpful. Everyone thought that it was very good value and full of praise.

This is the second time I have stayed at the hotel, I usually stay every 7/8 week to attend a course at CCCU. The staff are fantastic and location is great. Keep up the good work. See you in December 2018

double room was large for an English hotel. Bed was a little hard but comfortable. No safe or fridge. Free fast wifi. Enough electrical outlets. Excellent air conditioning. Largish bathroom. Shower/bathtub combo. Large fluffy towels. The food here was some of the best convention food I'd ever had. Over 3 days, all the food was delicious. Well worth coming just for that!

Booked a standard double room for one night with breakfast. Pre booked restaurant for evening. On arrival we were up graded to a suite, 4poster +jacuzzi. I had asked previously whether the chateaubriand was still on menu, unfortunately it wasn't. When we went down to dinner the head waiter informed us the chief had got it in special for us. This whole experience was wonderful and we would highly recommend this hotel. ,

Lovely hotel with very expensive g&t! We had dinner there which was first class. The staff were wonderful and the maitre d' was helpful and interesting making it a very pleasant evening. The room was clean and comfortable and we enjoyed the stay very much. We would have re booked for our return journey but they were full! Free parking too.

This was the hotel that we had our wedding in 2011. We decided to return and stay 3 nights as we were visiting Kent to catch up with friends. We wanted to stay at the Abbott as it was central to all the places that we needed to get to and we wanted to take a trip down memory lane of our special day. We had a lovely stay at the Abbott, staff were friendly and helpful, room was very clean. We only ate in the hotel at breakfast time, the food was lovely, with a cooked breakfast each morning setting us up for the day ahead. No doubt we'll return to the Abbott on the future when we make another visit to Kent, as it gives us the opportunity to relive our special day.

Excellent location for the centre of Canterbury where there is a fabulous mix of retail outlets, historical buildings and of course the cathedral. The hotel enjoys old world charm with more traditional decor and fabulous staff - everyone was so friendly. There was ample parking and check-in was a breeze. The room (122) was clean and functional with TV, hair dryer, wi-fi and tea making facilities albeit rooms on that side of the hotel don't enjoy the best view - see one of our pics uploaded. There was a good choice at breakfast and plenty of coffee. We would be more than happy to stay at the Best Western Abbots Barton Hotel again and hope to do so in the future.

We chose this hotel for its location (near the channel tunnel) and because it was dog friendly. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, the room was fantastic, even having very welcome air conditioning and breakfast was fab. Our only disappointment was the evening meal, which was far overpriced for what it was. The ratatouille lasagne was rather a joke ... two pieces of round pasta with some ratatouille between them. It was seriously small and insubstantial. We would definitely return to the hotel, but we would not use the restaurant for an evening meal!

My partner and i recently stayed here and were met by friendly reception staff. Including the jacuzzi style bath which my girlfriend enjoyed! The location is incredibly convenient for short walks into the town centre. Our room was large, clean and comfortable with all the usual accoutrements to ensure an enjoyable stay.

We enjoyed two nights in this gracious hotel, well situated within walking distance of the City centre. The room was clean, spacious and comfortable with a good en suite and a generous double bed. The service was polite and friendly and the building and services well maintained considering the hotel's age. We only used the restaurant for our breakfasts which were well prepared with a good choice of fruits and juices with the hot choices being freshly cooked. One criticism though, we had to park on the grass some distance from the entrance when it was raining due to the limited parking, to find that at least one prime parking spot at the main entrance had been taken up by a staff member.

We are delighted to write ,all the staff from reception, to bar ,breakfast restaurant staff ,especailly the elderly gentleman who was so efficent ,to the night porter who i must say was so helpful at five in the morning providing me with a pint of iced water which he did willingly and without me feeling i was a nuisance.You are all a credit to the best weston and must have exellent staff trainning.I loved the hotel as it was in keeping with the building and i so hate these contemporary hotels that are not cosy ,warm and too clinical looking.The breakfast was plentyful with a great choice and we didnt have to wait for staff to ask if we wished to have tea or coffee as i mentioned the elderly gentleman was super efficient. The room was clean comfortable as was the bed.The shower was super powerful always a bonus.We have no complaints at all ,a very positive stay,thankyou to you all.

Nice place to stay. Close to the center. For us it was important that it is close to CATS. Easy to find the hotel. It was surprising to find sequoia in the garden. )) Next time we will get there by car as there is a parking lot available for guests. Nothing else to add.

We have just returned from this hotel as part of a 24 strong coach party. The hotel Abbots Barton was very comfortable, with in our case, an excellent and well equipped room. The staff were very friendly throughout, but unfortunately the dining experience was less than acceptable. The restaurant was overcrowded, regimented, and at most times the staff had difficulty in reaching and serving the long table provided.. In general, the quality and quantity of dishes at dinner were below the level expected. Limited choice is acceptable, but in most cases the standard of cooking was low, particularly at breakfast where hot buffet items were either underdone or lower quality. There were no hot plates. It was disappointing to have to choose every course at dinner, sometimes more than one day in advance. This only served to exacerbate the experience.

We stayed here for 2 nights over a weekend, using a virgin experience voucher. It's a good location; a 10 minute stroll into the centre of town. Decor is quite old fashioned, but in keeping with Canterbury. It's nice nonetheless, and our room and bathroom was clean. The breakfast was good, and service was friendly. My only criticism is that the pillows weren't comfortable and could be replaced with better ones!

I have stayed here a few times over the years and I spent another night here a few weeks ago and was happy with my stay. Room was decent sized, clean, comfortable bed and big bathroom. Free parking and great breakfast to top it off, along with a 10 min walk into town. I also had lunch here which was disappointing, but needed after a long flight and then drive from Gatwick. Luckily dinner in town was amazing so made up for it. It was very hot when I was there and the AC/Fan in the room kept it comfortable. I would stay here again.

Was welcomed by Rebecca on check in who was very pleasant. Had lunch in bar area before an afternoon nap. Sandwich was nice but a little steep at £8.50 considering it came with only a few crisps. Room was spacious, a touch old fashioned with a slight smell which could of been removed with maybe a plug in air freshener or a shake and vac carpet cleaner. I brought my own scented candle which sorted it out. Bed was comfortable and coffee machine with pods was appreciated. Breakfast very good. Would stay again.

Beautiful hotel with incredibly warm and welcoming staff who were always happy to provide to the every need of their guests!It was almost great to see a vegan option on the restaurant menu. I could not recommend it enough.

Stayed overnight in Early August 2018. The hotel is being refitted and all the Best Western and hotel signs have been taken down, so there were no signs advertising it's location on the road, just a notice saying it was a Private Car Park, drove passed it! Our room was on the second floor towards the rear and we had to navigate through the workmen changing room door locks all along our corridor on arrival and departure. No real drama, but the hotel wasn't full, why put us with the locksmiths? Anyway the room as fine, breakfast excellent and sleep quality good. My review appears to be a bit negative but we enjoyed our stay and had some good 'banter' with the workmen on each occasion we used the corridor.

We booked 7 rooms at this hotel over 6 months ago, for a family get together in Canterbury. The hotel is lovely - nicely renovated in a quirky tasteful style. Unfortunately we found that all our rooms were on the top floor and the sloping ceilings and angled velux windows gave the impression that we were in the attic - which is what we might have expected if we had booked last minute rather than several months earlier. The first incident, as we made our way to our room was that the keycard didn't open the door of our bedroom. The staff managed to fix the lock on the door and explained that they had just had new locks fitted on the bedroom doors. Then when my daughter and her family arrived, they discovered on entering their allocated family room with their keycard that it was already occupied. Highly embarrassing!!! On our last day, our requested breakfast table for 10 was occupied by another group when we arrived for breakfast at 8am. The staff were not prepared to move any tables to accommodate us so we had to eat at separate tables. On check out the reception asked for an additional £36 for the cost of one room on top of what we had already paid - when we queried this they could not explain why there was a discrepancy so they eventually dropped the extra charge. All in all the incidents marred what would have been a lovely get together. The hotel is lovely but unfortunately the hotel is let down by a problem with staff communication. Some kind of recompense goes a long way to easing sticky problems such as these with customers but sadly they did not take the opportunity.

We enjoyed this night yet another superb dinner. The restaurant was too sparsely visited for the quality offered. Luckily they chef introduced on our second night the menu and thus we had some new choices. My wife had scallops as a starter and wonderful calf liver as a main. I had pea soup and fantastic ravioli. A louis jadot beaujolais crowned the wonderful evening. When in the neighbourhood make sure you visit this hotel restaurant.

This former personal house, now a hotel, is a old building but kept very well. It's clean, it's colourfull and it gives you a good vibe. The rooms are different, and our room was great. Spacious enough, good bathroom, with good shower! Breakfast is good and with fresh products. Fresh baked bread! Loved that! One tiny thing, there are now windows, so a bit warm during the summer. Friendly staff. There should be enough parking for everybody, they created extra space in the garden at the entrance. You can park nearby, but that will cost you GBP1.70 per hour. But as told by the staff, it should be no problem for everyone. They have some plans to extand with rooms, with a brasserie, extra parking places.

Booked as we wanted a hotel with parking where we could walk into the town. Reception were helpful in recommending the local bus service to get to Whitstable where we'd booked into Wheelers Oyster Bar. Room and hotel are very dated, but you can't fault the cleanliness exceptional. We had air con in our room which was very efficient. Only downside though was the noise from the room above us, very disturbing with people walking around. Bed was too soft so not a great nights sleep The receptionist mentioned that renovations were being done, so would consider visiting again after they're completed.

This is a tough property to review - I stayed here for three nights in August, during a very warm period. The biggest detractor for this hotel is the lack of air conditioning. While this is quite standard in UK hotels, it doesn't make for a comfortable stay when it's over 90 degrees. There was a fan in the room, but no outlets on the wall with the windows, so it wasn't possible to blow cool air into the room at night. And if you left the windows open (even with the privacy curtains closed), you would soon be greeted with all sorts of little flying creatures covering the ceiling. The pigeons also tried to get in several times, but thankfully were not successful. The hotel is old, but well-kept, and quite peaceful for being off the main street. The staff is courteous and professional. The highlight of our stay was Pietro, part of the breakfast staff. He was such a charming and hard-working man, he made the whole stay worth it! Overall, I would recommend, but perhaps in winter...

What can I say? Fantastic hotel! Lovely, helpful and welcoming staff and lovely room! Would definitely recommend! Can't believe that it's a 3 star hotel and its much better than 4 and five star hotels in the centre of Canterbury! Would love to return!

I stayed here for 2 nights, to attend my best friends wedding. On arrival we had a very warm welcome. The room was a very good size, and the bed was huge! We went down to the bar on the first night and had a few drinks. The staff were all very friendly. Breakfast in the morning was also pleasant. We were well looked after and had everything we needed, staff checked on us regularly. The food was good, especially the mini pastries! The hotel could do with some updating (which I believe it is getting) but the staff more than make up for this and made our stay enjoyable! Can't wait to see what the hotel looks like after the renovations are complete!

We always review on value for money, do you get what you pay for. We booked this months ago before our trip from Australia This is a very well presented property for 3 star I believe Check in was easy , we did have an issue but I believe that is with the booking company and not hotel. Great location , nice decor, rooms very clean and while breakfast was not fantastic it was ok. It was within walking distance from the town centre Canterbury , very nice town We enjoyed our stay. I have heard People in the north of the UK are more friendly and so far I would agree. A couple of people at the hotel were very friendly but most were not. I stayed in August 2018 to get married in Canterbury. From the moment I arrived the staff were friendly and welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. Our room (318) was spacious and nicely decorated. I visited the restaurant with my bridal party for breakfast before my wedding, it was busy but a table for 8 was quickly made up with no trouble. There was a big selection for breakfast, all freshly prepared. Staff were filling items and checking everyone was happy. A busy restaurant on a saturday morning but very well run by the supervisor on duty. We brought our dog and the staff made a bug fuss of him, making us all feel very welcome. We loved our stay and will definitely be back very soon!

Took the dog along with us and she was most welcome. Staff on reception very helpful and friendly and supplied us with a local list of dog friendly places to eat. Short stay watching nearby cricket but very enjoyable.

A family of four, we spent one night at this hotel on the way to the ferry to France. The location is very practical, both for walking in to Canterbury (just a 10-minute walk away), as well as for easy access to the ferries in Dover, just a half an hour drive away. We appreciated the free onsite parking. Our family room (323) was very comfortable, if a bit cramped. The beds were very comfortable and the bathroom was well-equipped, and as our room was way at the top of the hotel in a back corner, it was very quiet in spite of the noisy wedding reception going on on the ground floor. The WiFi, however, was complicated to access and very very slow. We did not eat in the hotel restaurant, preferring to eat in the charming nearby center of town. Since we were under the roof, our room was very hot, and we would have liked to have had air conditioning. We found the price a rather high considering that breakfast was not included, but it seemed to be a fairly standard price for the region. All in all a positive experience, and we would happily stay here again.

Good hotel, on site parking. The room was clean and a good size, ours was on the first floor facing the rear, no real view just a flat roof. Tea & coffee making facilities, plus usual bath/shower items. We did not use the restaurant in the evening but did take the buffet breakfast which was of a good choice. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The hotel is a 10-15 min stroll from the town which is very nice with a wide range of places to eat and drink. Overall a decent hotel and Canterbury is a nice place to visit, especially the Cathedral which is stunning!

Stayed for 1 night stopover for Whitstable oyster weekend. Hotel is a 5 - 10 minute walk to Canterbury town centre, hotel itself was very nice gothic style and has nice oldy worldy touches to it. Breakfast was lovely. Staff really pleasant. Would stay again if in the area.

I stayed for two nights and enjoyed everything about the hotel. I stayed in a single room -- Room 1. The staff were friendly and professional. There was a lovely bar. Most importantly, I could leave the car there safely and walk into the city in ten minutes. I'd happily return.

We visited Canterbury and stayed in this hotel. That was a good choice. We had a nice room overlooking the garden. It is a 10 minute walk to the centre of Canterbury. We would definitieve stay here again. You can park your car on site.

We stayed here for two nights, booking 2 rooms. Ours was 220 with a view over the front car park. Our sons was 301 with a view of the rubbish at the back. Room only. Both were clean and comfy. It was very hot (30+°) during our stay so we took taxis into town, these averaged at about £7/8 each trip one way. Cheerful and helpful staff. Free parking. Did the job.

We decided to spend a few days in Kent so why not in the city of Canterbury. Abbots Barton Hotel is a 10 - 15 minute walk from the City Centre. You can easily spend a day there alone - be prepared to pay for the Cathedral but do make the investment (& try to look past the scaffolding) The rest of Kent is a maximum of 40 minutes away with the coast at Whitstable just 20 minutes. The Hotel itself was a very welcoming we stayed for 4 nights, our room was clean and well serviced, staff were excellent. Breakfast was very good - great options and plenty of fresh food on offer. On days 3 and 4 we had a visiting choir who arrived by coach. The dining room dynamic changed - it was full to bursting however the staff managed the situation well . They got everyone seated, the groups stayed together, breakfast service still flowed and no one seemed to suffer As it was warm we had tea in the gardens most days after spending the day site seeing. Bar staff we friendly, knew the area and help plan time out Would we go again - Yes certainly

We visited here last weekend with our chocolate lab. We were impressed that on arrival to our room there was a dog blanket and water bowl waiting. The room was clean and smelt lovely. The staff were really friendly and having our dog with us was no problem. We had drinks on the patio and ate in the spacious bar area both very pleasant and comfortable. The hotel was a short walk into Canterbury and had small but lovely grounds. The evening menu was fairly limited and the starters and desserts slightly over priced however the breakfast was plentiful; catering for all tastes. Staff were friendly, helpful and very eager to please. We had a lovely anniversary overnight stay.

We chose this hotel because it was close to the Canterbury City Centre but far enough away with a 2 acre garden (their website said!) to relax in. The reception staff and porter were very helpful. Our room (Standard Twin) was nicely furnished (although the wardrobe door needed attention - Room 129 - and the modern washbasin had this ridiculous plug that allows water to flow away constantly! Just like the Greek hotels.) On our first night, as we were tired from travelling, we had dinner in the restaurant. The soup had to be returned as it was tasteless and our waitress immediately apologised. Then we ordered venison. This was a joke! We had two pieces about 1" square of venison and absolutely not acceptable. There was a wedding party in on our first night and we wondered if the kitchen had run out of food? We found a great pub nearby for the remainder of our stay for dinner. The breakfast was OK, but the restaurant staff seem very disorganised and the lighting is poor and no windows. Our chamber maid was very good and our room was always clean and the bed was comfy. I understand that the rooms are being refurbished at the moment and extra rooms are being built. With an improvement in the restaurant, the hotel is a useful place for a few days of exploring the historic City. Thoroughly recommend the boat trip on the River Stour, but not happy to pay £12.50 admission to the cathedral.

Stayed at Abbots Barton for five nights as part of a tour. My room was large, comfortable and very clean. The hotel staff were so accommodating, and handled our group of 30 with aplomb. Dinners in the dining room were delicious, especially the soups and desserts. The breakfast buffet had the best little croissants and pain au chocolat, and whatever herb was in the scrambled eggs make them extra tasty. The only complaint I had was with the pillows. Very hard, flat, foam. Investing in fluffy down pillows would be a great investment!

We brought a Groupon for afternoon tea here. Wow what a lovely surprise, we had a lovely time, whilst not the cheapest afternoon tea I've ever purchased on Groupon -well worth the money. Lovely salmon,cucumber,ham & cheese sandwiches on brown & white bread, AND the most Delicious scones I have eaten in a long time, sooo fresh, crispy on the outside and lovely and soft inside Yummm. Please give my compliments to the chef as I'm told they are made in house - and ask if I can get a dozen to take home lol ?? Washed down with lovely Earl Grey tea we then tried to tackle the Bakewell,Victoria sponge & Lemon drizzle cake. Needless to say we asked for a doggy bag. It was very quiet on this particular afternoon, and the lovely staff came and checked that we had everything that we wanted and then left us to take our time & Enjoy !! Would highly recommend with or without a Groupon voucher and we will def go again, as it's one of the best I have had for a while !

Stayed with a group of friends. The staff are all friendly and helpful but special mention must go to the night porter who was extremely helpful. Our room was one of those still in need of refurbishment, it showed, but was still acceptable. The biggest let down was in the restaurant. Breakfast on the first morning was a bit of a shambles, struggled to get anyone's attention to get tea and coffee. Also had to sort ourselves out as no one told us what was happening. Very different on 2nd morning when the supervisor was back on duty and things ran like clockwork. We had prebooked the dinner menu for the 2nd evening and although the food was good, the service was a bit rushed. First time I have been offered tea/coffee at the same time as my dessert was put on the table. It was not very fresh when we did eventually get it after savouring our dessert. Another letdown was the lack of disabled toilet for our friend, in a wheelchair, who visited us at the hotel. The gents' toilet involved steps and when we enquired, we were told that he would have to use a bedroom toilet. Overall, it was a good stay, plenty of parking but little things let it down.

Stayed for three nights on a short trip with family. The staff in the hotel are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are very clean. A little dated in places. I stayed in room number 1 on the ground floor which is a single room. It was perfectly adequate although I found the pillows were so flat and uncomfortable that I had to ask for a third one. There was a wedding there on our final night (a Saturday) which made parking very difficult as the lawn used as an overflow was being used for croquet. Bath and shower were good with an abundance of hot water. Breakfasts were ok but we had to wait on one occasion for the fruit juice to appear. There is a range of hot foot as well as the normal croissants etc. Decided to skip the 'specials' having tried one of their suggestions - eggy bread and chocolate chip - definitely don't mix! A lot of renovation work apparently going on to create more rooms and a spa area - did not cause any problems with noise.

We visited Canterbury to move our son out of university halls and decided to stay overnight and make a it a couple of days visiting beautiful Canterbury. The Best Western Hotel was a delightful hotel with a combination of old and new build. Beautiful grounds. Ample car parking. Hotel staff we found very welcoming. Extremely polite and nothing was too much trouble. The room was perfect. Very nicely decorated with onsite and a jaccuzi bath. We would not hesitate to stay there again. Mr and Mrs Steve Botham.

This hotel is the complete package: clean; good location; polite staff; and good food. Situated just outside of Canterbury, the Abbots Barton offers lovely spacious rooms and an immaculate bathroom area. Despite there being a great many rooms, you never get a feeling of being over crowded. Breakfast in the morning is fantastic with a range of hot and cold foods available. In terms of the location, the hotel is a 20-25 minute walk into Canterbury. There are other hotels a bit closer, but because of the grounds of this one, it would not be feasible to have it closer. Staff are knowledgeable of the area, but not completely of their own booking system as they failed to book the correct time fr a future visit, and then had to cancel on us. Not ideal. Generally speaking, a nice hotel which is perfect for a weekend trip to the Garden of England.

Wasn't sure what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised when we got to the room. We had a nice corner room with was of good size. It is very conveniently located to the attractions in town. Would recommend this hotel. Clean, good value. Food was average, but edible.

I stayed for two nights here, but did not sample the food at all, so cannot comment on that. The hotel is attractive and spacious. The reception staff were pleasant and efficient. My room was faultless - spotlessly clean and well decorated with all the comforts I would want, plus space. Would definitely go again.

Lovely room. Spacious for single room. Powerful shower and all clean. I would stay again. Lovely building and not to modern as it suits the architecture. Staff all polite and attentive. Breakfast was lovely, maybe a tad to expensive at 12.50 but was nice.

As part of a Seniors Tour group who spent 7 nights at BW Abbots Barton I would definitely recommend the site for the location, very comfy rooms and for the most part very friendly front of house staff who helped immensely with directions etc. There was a wedding on the weekend we were there and they placed our group further away from where the noise would be a bit much. I am unsure if due to our length of stay .... the housekeeping staff may have been told to go over the room lightly as glasses/cups were never washed/replaced nor were coffee/tea replaced after we had used some supplies. Also repeated notes on bed to "Keep beds apart" never were adhered to, they were always together when we entered after our daily outing. Not major concerns ... the room was very comfy and beds were GREAT. Having breakfasts included and many of our dinners proved a bit much .... the selection of food in the morning was exactly the same every day, no changes and it was a bit repetitive for a 7 day stretch. Staff were very busy and run off their feet in a.m. Fresh fruit was grapefruit and prunes, with the usual assortment of other normal items. The fried eggs sitting in oil was soooo very unappetizing. Dinners were off and on .... the presentation was there but not the quantity or quality. Risotto was offered to us as either an Appetizer or Main Meal (or both) most days. The portion of bread at dinner offered is maybe 3"x 2" ... appr ... it was a joke. A nice roll would have been so much better. If you had soup ... it was only a few spoonfuls and you were done. HOTEL GREAT ... Restaurant .... go out and eat elsewhere.

This is a pleasant and handily placed hotel with nice rooms and friendly staff. It is very good for a visit to the centre of Canterbury about a 10 minute walk away. Its one problem is that it presents a gourmet menu (venison, lobster, duck etc.) but does not deliver it consistently. We stayed a couple of years ago and the food was sometimes mediocre, and we found it so again this month. Steak overdone and chips in a similar condition - pretty basic errors really.

Reasonable hotel, bit dated, clean, staff not very interested in their job. Visited the restaurant for dinner. Not a pleasant experience, staff in training with no trainer, repeated our order three times. finally arrived and in my steak was inedible, still had blood running and raw in centre. Staff insisted on cooking another one, tasty, salty and tough. No need to visit again.

We were just overnight guests with plans in Canterbury and therefore didn't try the restaurant but overall, it's a beautiful hotel with friendly staff and our room—way up on the top floor—was spacious, clean, tastefully decorated, and very comfortable. The Abbots Barton exceeded our expectations; we've stayed in places that were a lot more expensive but not nearly as nice. I've seen some reviews where people complain about it being "old fashioned" but we found that to be part of its charm! We were, at first, a little concerned about the walk into the city centre but it wasn't as far as we thought—probably about 10 minutes or so—and quite a pleasant little hike at that! The only drawback we can think of was the air conditioning unit in the room. The room was quite warm when we got there and we turned on the A/C to cool it off; it didn't cool the room much and there was quite a lot of condensation that dripped from it onto the desktop below. Once the sun went down, however, we turned it off and opened the windows for the night and it was fine. It was one of the quietest places we've stayed as well! We would definitely like to stay here again next time we're in Canterbury!

The hotel is just a walk to the centre of Canterbury.Check in was fast and efficient. The room was tidy and clean, The staff were helpful and polite. Breakfast was plentiful with a good variety choices, although they could do with additional toasters. Will definitely book there again.

Great location for Canterbury and staff friendly and helpful. Free parking on site seemed adequate. Decoration is quite old fashioned in the general areas and rooms. There was a number of retirees staying who were on a tourist bus tour so probably in line with this type of guest expectation. I was in what seemed to be a bridal suite with a 4 poster bed, seating area and jacuzzi bath. All very nice but the bathroom had no shower unit so had to sit in the jacuzzi holding a shower head attached to the bath taps above my head. Not really what you want on a business trip. Breakfast was ok but pretty basic, with boiled potatoes but no hash browns. Very limited choice of fruit unless you like figs/prunes... So in summary the hotel is ok, but if you want a modern contemporary hotel, it's not for you.

If you are travelling solo make sure they give you a room with a double bed. Room 5 is a very old-fashioned and small room with a single bed and for some reason I couldn't work out they have tightly nailed blue plastic gauze across the 3 windows, making it feel very claustrophobic and difficult to get fresh air. I booked online as a single adult but when I went back online the price for a double was cheaper than the room they gave me. I didn't bother complaining but won't stay again.

The Abbots Barton Hotel is well appointed both inside and out. It's located in a relaxing setting. A short walk from the city centre & has ample free parking. The Hotel is extremely clean and comfortable. The restaurant is excellent. Breakfast is superb. Quality & service are consistently maintained even at peak times. ?New facilities consisting of a swimming pool & sauna etc. are being developed.?The staff are helpful, friendly & professional. A special mention needs to be made of Radmilla in reception, Dean & the reception manager, Sarah. ? In the restaurant, Oliver provided excellent service & Petro adds a touch of refinement that is rare in a hotel of this size.?A great place to stay. If you choose this hotel you won't be disappointed!

I stayed at this hotel last night on the 4th of May. I went back to the hotel after my night out in Canterbury. Both myself and my friend were unaware of our level of noise when talking and laughing. The night porter then phoned the room and asked if we would mind our noise. So far so good, and good procedure. We respectfully quietened down. So we had a bath which has a jet/ spa option installed, and were talking and having a drink, to our amazement and utter disgust, the night porter entered the room whilst we were in the bath, completely breaching my human rights, the right to privacy, he did not knock on the door, or make a second phone call as should have been done. I asked the porter if he would please leave, (rather frustrated) but continued to say we were making too much noise. Not happy, I got rather cross and it ruined the rest of my evening. When speaking to the manager the next morning, I asked what noise was heard, all I was told, “it was not recorded or noted”, meaning it could have been the bath making the noise. But there is nothing in the customer policy/ rules stating we can't have a bath with the jets on. The manager didn't seem fussed, all he said was, “I will be taking it further with the night porter but that's all that he could do”. The manager didn't seem fussed that my human right had been broken or that it ruined the rest of my stay. I can be sure, never to stay at this hotel again. I was given an email so I am able to get a breakfast free of charge, however, I'm there for more then just the breakfast. To anyone who is thinking of staying at this hotel, don't expect anything grand.

The location is good with sufficient car parking when we visited and only a ten minute walk into the city centre so you have no need to take the car if that's where you're heading.. Set in large grounds and well back from the road, we had absolutely no traffic noise in our room overlooking the back of the hotel. The outlook was not good but it didn't really matter as we weren't there to look out at it for long each day. More importantly it was well away from the road and nearest buildings and enabled us to sleep with open windows. I'm sure the view it will improve when the building works are completed. The room appeared to be newly decorated (apart from the armchairs which looked as though they were possibly awaiting replacement to fit in with the rest of the room?) and was large enough for us to be very comfortable. The bathroom too was spacious, absolutely spotless and well-appointed with ample supplies of toiletries. Although the shower was over the bath it had good water pressure and there was plenty of hot water. There was free WIFI, the usual coffee/tea making facilities, hair-dryer, TV, etc but no clock. The buffet breakfast had a very good selection of hot and cold fruit, cereals and hot food – the bacon was especially good. The only gripe was that the coffee was not up to the standard of the food. .Staff were friendly and helpful, though service in the bar could be rather slow. Overall, I would certainly recommend this hotel if staying in Canterbury and would happily revisit if I was in the area.

Stayed here for a weekend break, and was not disappointed. Such a lovely, clean hotel with very friendly staff. Just about a 5 minute walk from the town centre, so its very convenient. Comfortable beds and a quiet night's sleep. Very highly recommended.

Comfortable superior double room.but up in eaves with no direct outlook. Surprised that no biscuits supplied with tea making facility.Staff very helpful and efficient. Breakfasts good.Dinner menu rather expensive but food was good.

First impressions of Abbots Barton Hotel was lovely. Friendly welcome at reception always helps and we were greeted with such. We only stayed overnight but loved the experience. Parking is tight and for our visit we had to use the 'overflow' parking on the grass lawn in front of the hotel but this was not a problem for us. It is possible to drive up to the door of the hotel to drop off bags if necessary. Our room was very attractive, light and welcoming. Clean and nicely decorated. No attractive view out of our window but again, not a problem for our purposes. We had a quick pint in the lounge which was lovely except for numerous stray coffee/tea trays left by other guests. It was noticeable but did not spoil our enjoyment of the hotel and its amenities but suspect service might be slow during the week. We loved the proximity and easy walking distance to the city which is why we will definitely choose to stay here again.

Check in was fast and staff very pleasant, they didn't realise that we had our dog with us but this was no problem and a bowl and blanket were quickly delivered to our room on the 1st floor. The room was large with all facilities needed, bathroom was big again with shower and bath wash. shower was excellent with massive bath sheets changed daily. Hotel is only a 5 minute walk to Tesco express and 10 mins into center. Breakfast: As we had the dog with us we were set up in bar area. which was fine. on the 1st night we had a breakfast waiter called Carmello who was a credit to the Hotel (thank you Carmello) As it turns out Carmello has only been working for a short while, im sure he will be there a long time. Breakfast it self is Buffet style and whilst im not a big fan of this i must say it was very good with one small niggle that even thou the fried eggs look wonderful the yolks were always hard even when i asked for fresh ones they came out with hard yolks. 2nd day i changed to poached and these were perfect. But all round a great find and we will definitely be staying here again. Thank you all for a very comfortable stay . Tim

Booked here as it was cheaper than the nearby Premier Inn....and what a find! Things didn't start out great as I arrived at the hotel with a colleague to discover that the room bookings had been incorrectly passed on by the 3rd party online booking system and that my room had been missed from the booking. However the staff on reception were extremely helpful and despite the hotel being very busy they were able to find me a room for the night. The room itself was wonderful with an extremely comfortable bed and a large luxurious bath. In a brilliant location with just a short walk to the city centre. The breakfast was plentiful and freshly prepared. Overall, despite the minor glitch at arrival, a marvellous stay.

Friendly staff and very clean hotel which what we saw was well kept and maintained. It was about 12 minutes to the town centre and around 15/ 20 to the cathedral walking. We did not eat at the hotel so can't comment on the food. The bar had a good selection of beer and spirits The rooms were spacious the bed comfortable but the shower was poor and needed replacement . I did inform the reception on leaving.

A 3-star,traditional-style,comfortable hotel at a fair price. Our double room was a bit tight but was clean, well equipped,with a comfortable bed, and warm,once I put the radiator on. We did not have time to take dinner there but had some excellent,generously filled sandwiches.The buffet breakfast was good. I particularly enjoyed tinned figs and a very generous dish of smoked salmon and scrambled egg,the latter being beautifully cooked.My partner enjoyed a generous portion of kippers and poached eggs but there was also,of course,a cold buffet and help-yourself full English,in addition to all the usual juices,yoghurts,cereals,grapefruit,patisserie and different breads. Service was good throughout. The receptionist was very helpful and efficient and willingly helped with luggage,which being disabled we very much appreciated.She also booked a taxi and,without being asked ,chased it up when it was late in arriving. The waiter who brought the sandwiches was very friendly and willingly brought extra water for our pot of tea. Breakfast staff were keeping the buffet well stocked and keeping tables tidy. There was a reasonable amount of parking space on site and disabled parking close to the main entrance. Reception helpfully gave us a ground floor room near amenities. There were a few small niggles. We needed to order flannels, water,biscuits and more tea and milk. I have to say that all of these,in addition to extra pillows, were brought very cheerfully and quickly to our room,by friendly and helpful staff.There was also only one set of towels and no toilet brush and toilet paper almost ran out.The hotel handbook makes it plain that guests can obtain these and lots of other items if they request them and the receptionist was charming about our requests,pointing out that the night porter would also help guests if needed.However,we did not discover what we wanted until quite late in the evening, and then bit by bit, so felt uncomfortable at having to keep ringing for room service. So I think there is an issue re. provision of consumables,if only to prevent staff being run off their feet! Overall,this is a well-run,comfortable hotel with well-trained staff,eager to please. We would definitely stay there again and recommend it.

This was a beautiful and historic place to stay. The building was historic and it the historic feel followed through the décor. The room was beautiful, the beds comfortable and the towels thick and thirsty. The staff was friendly and helpful and the breakfast delicious. I would stay here again without any hesitation. It was one of the best hotels ever.

Prior to our stay, we needed to ask for a room with easy access due to a knee operation I had. The hotel was accommodating and put us near the lift. The room was a good size and well kept, although the metal on the bath was showing through. I liked the decor and the bedding was comfortable. One issue that became more of a problem was the heat of the room. The bathroom radiator was constantly on high and the room was so warm my make up was melting! It didn't help that the team cleaning the room kept fully closing the windows we'd left on latch. The air con unit in the room wasn't working either. When we checked in, we were happy to hear we were bed and breakfast as we didn't remember booking it, however on the second day the kitchen tried to charge £50 for two days worth of breakfasts. Turns out the receptionist on our arrival got it wrong. The person dealing with us tried to get me to sign the money off regardless and said “you won't have to pay all of it”. Luckily, my partner spoke to reception and the debt got written off. The handling of the situation by staff initially wasn't great, especially first thing in the morning! Overall, with these niggles, I'd say the stay was average. It's a shame as the building itself was quite impressive.

Took the family and our dog to stay. Lovely family room, lush food, friendly staff and a cracking buffet breakfast. Would recommend, especially the prosecco! This is our second visit and both times we had a late dinner in the restaurant which was a real treat, staff made our young daughter very welcome. The dog was provided with a bowl and blanket in our nicely sized and decorated room.

Nice Hotel and very friendly and helpful staff. Food expensive in restaurant for evening meal and very slow to be delivered to table. Breakfast buffet can be chaotic at busy times and hot food running out ( example - no bacon)

Lovely hotel. Really friendly staff and superb room. The bar staff were great making us sandwiches at 1.30am. Very clean and great location. Five minute walk to the centre of Canterbury. Defo go back to the hotel.

Stayed in a luxury twin room, very nice, only problem noisy neighbours on the Friday night ( not the hotel's problem some people should have more consideration ). Hotel only a 10 min walk from Canterbury, free parking excellent. Breakfast very nice. Would recommend to anyone wishing to visit the area.

We stayed here for the Easter weekend and despite the weather, we can report that it's situated close to the town centre, 10 minute walk with everything close by and so much to see and do. As we love walking, shopping and drinking (tea and coffee) outside, it was perfect for us. Thoroughly recommend the hotel for a short or long stay. Sarah and her reception team along with all her excellent team of staff made us feel very welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for us, even the night porter took the trouble to make Sarah a lovely cup of tea when she wasn't feeling too well early Saturday morning. Breakfast was delicious and a special mention to Pietro for his personalised service, again all the staff couldn't have been any more accommodating. Definitely coming back in the not too distant future where we hope the weather will be kinder so I can show Sarah other parts of the beautiful county that is the garden of England. Thank you all once again and keep up the excellent work and high standards.

Stayed for 1 night I a 'King twin room' Pleasant olde hotel a 10 min easy walk from the main attractions. Corridors are a bit of a maze to find your room, but not a problem. Comfortable beds. TV, tea/coffee maker. Clean. Polite staff Bar is somewhat expensive, as is the breakfast. View from room 124 is of an unpleasant junk yard. Outside parking. Caters for weddings, so could become crowded. We would stay again when visiting Canterbury.

Lived up to our expectations. Friendly and helpful staff. Hotel convenient for walk into town or to County Cricket Ground (about 10/15 minutes for either Free parking appreciated. We would definitely stay there again

We visited this hotel through virgin experience and I am so please I picked this one! It was our anniversary and wanted to stay somewhere we haven't been before and loved the look of this hotel. It didn't disappoint! As soon as we arrive we were welcomed by a lovely lady at reception who wished us a happy anniversary and gave us our room key. We went up a few flights of stairs to fine an amazing room! We had been upgraded! (Room 104) It was a beautiful huge room. Everything we needed and so clean too. A lovely little touch was the anniversary card and chocolates from the hotel. Thank you so much for that! We were booked in the restaurant but before went to the bar for a cheeky one and the barman was sweet and polite. We were then welcomed by a young man in the restaurant (can't remember his name) who wished us happy anniversary too. The dinner was amazing. Can't stop thinking about it. We got a complimentary glass of fizz which was a lovely touch from the duty manager (again didn't know his name!) We were too stuffed for dessert so they brought out a slate of 7 chocolates for each year we had been married. So cute! A great nights sleep on a very comfortable bed. Breakfast was delicious and great variety of a full English, cereals and pastries. The only slight request would be hash browns instead of potatoes and mushrooms. That's just a preference. We checked out of the hotel and was allowed to park there whilst we went exploring Canterbury which is only a 10 minute walk. Ignore the negative reviews. A fabulous hotel with amazing staff. This would be a good place to stay for tourists visiting Canterbury, or the cricket ground (where I was going for a conference). I was in a genuine single room, but it was well laid out with a desk and sensible power points. The wifi (The Cloud) was good and reliable (not always my experience with The Cloud). It's an older building with new extensions so this affects the styling and décor. The TV annoyingly switched itself off and on again every five minutes, coming back each time with the volume on high. There was also a silly thing with the taps on the sink that hardly reached the sink itself but the shower was excellent and there was a bath. However, I nearly gave them all the points back because it had a window in the bathroom (small pleasures – none of that ineffective/noisy fan thing going on). I had dinner in the restaurant and this was fine – nicely served and a step up from the budget rate I had paid for the room. So, I can recommend this hotel – I would just avoid room 218 until they mend the TV – which they promised to do quickly!

Arrived to find no space in car park , lounges or bars , had to have coffee in a corridor Told they had a large booking . Tried to book a evening meal in resturant , told fully booked due to a large booking We're told we could eat in the bar at 8.30 were the same menu would be available . Arrived just before 8.30. Barman was not aware of the booking and told us a limited menu only was available if the chef was agreeable , the manager was called who told us a cancellation has occurred and they could now get us in the resturant at 9pm, we agreed . Arrived at 9 promptly to find the resturant nearly empty, taken to our table and ordered food , whilst waiting for it to arrive the waiter reappeared and asked if we wanted dessert later as he wanted to close at 9.30 , thought it a bit rude but felt we would not want dessert so said no . First course arrived and then the staff started to clear the tables whilst we were eating . My partner had mussels , most of the shells were empty , one not opened at all , I showing it might be bad . The waiter told us he would advise the chef , nothing heard. Second course arrived and then the staff started to set up for breakfast, bringing in the hot boilers etc. We could not say the staff were ignoring us as the kept staring at us , we felt very unwelcome , if they do not want us after 9 why book us in at 9. Out night was ruined but we were tired so went to bed very upset. Breakfast next day was a farce . Disorganised , moved from a private table after we were shown to it to a group table as two waiters argued who had the right to it . Several people were complaining about the service . On checking out explained we were upset and were given 10 per cent off the meal . The receptionist was apologetic and again gave the explanation of "a large booking" We ended up feeling like we were second class customers , l would strongly advise anyone to avoid this place due to its appalling customer service

We drove pass the gate not thinking this lovely old mansion was the hotel. Formerly the residence of the Canterbury Mayor, this converted mansion is a lovely spot to spend the night or longer. set in large grounds, we had absolutely no traffic noise. Our room was functional and big enough for us to be very comfortable. The bathroom was a little overheated for our tastes, but it was well appointed and spotlessly clean, as was the main area. The bed and pillows were very comfortable and a good night's sleep was assured. Staff were all friendly, helpful and professional.

As a more mature couple, my wife and I try to take a couple of nights away around the time of our wedding anniversary. We have previous experience with the Best Western chain some years ago, which was good and so decided to try them again. The hotel is set in pleasant quiet surroundings and is more of a country house design, despite being very close to the city. We arrived slightly early to check-in and were politely asked to wait in the lounge bar. The greeting from the receptionist was both friendly and efficient and within ten minutes, we were able to check-in. We had booked an Executive room which was on the third floor. The room size was more than adequate, however the first impression was of how immaculately clean the room and bathroom were (in fact the whole hotel was spotless). We stayed for two nights and ate in the hotel both evenings. The food and service were first rate. The staff, whether at breakfast or in the evening, were really genuinely friendly and we felt very comfortable and at home. If there was a criticism, we found the beds too hard for our preference and in our bathroom, the toilet roll holder was loose, but otherwise everything else was spot-on. We had a really good stay, which was made special by the warmth of the staff and the quality of the food. Certainly one to remember.

So glad we chose this hotel to stay in on an overnight visit to Canterbury, it is amazing! Super friendly staff in every area of the hotel, the room was just gorgeous and well equipped, had dinner in the dining room and it was second to none (could challenge any top restaurant in London), lovely breakfast, and best of all, great value for money! I will certainly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting the area.

The hotel is as such quite acceptable with a well appointed room ( only 2 tea bags ) so far so good. We came here to visit both family and friends and my wife had booked the hotel for a pleasant stay at the middle of our mid week break. Our problem was the restaurant with it's very uninspiring menu, eyewateringly high prices and the smallest portion sizes we have ever seen. To be asked to pay £14 for a tiny portion of oven baked mackerel fillet, it was just about a half of one of the 4 fillets of the fish, was outrageous. The vegetables accompanying the dish were some very small potato pieces and I think, a little spinach. The rest of the menu items were £5 or £6 more expensive plus an extra £3.50 for each additional vegetable choice on top of that. Having complained to the waitress I was surprised to be totally ignored by staff so the only opportunity to record my complaint was to write on the bill that it was a very poor meal. I don't know how they have the cheek to stay open as a restaurant. Avoid this restaurant at all costs. Here is a pic of my dinner

My parents and I stayed here for two nights as we traveled to Canterbury to celebrate my sister's 21st birthday. The hotel seems to have been a manor before. The hotel and the rooms have a 20s-30s-40s vintage vibe. My room was stunningly huge and still very warm and cozy and welcoming! The bathroom was very nice as well, and the bathtub had jets as well, which was brilliant as I really needed to relax because the train ride to Canterbury was a total nightmare because of the snow! And the bed was very comfortable and the breakfast was superb!!!

Lovely place, set back from the road in leafy gardens but only 10 mins walk into town. Lots of cosy nooks and crannies to sit in. A warm welcome and actually a very warm place to stay during the cold snap we had at the end of Feb. Breakfast was lavish, and the waiting staff were very professional and helpful, could not do enough for you. The very patient and helpful Dean on reception made it extra special. Would thoroughly recommend.

The hotel is well situated for getting into the town either a walk or a short bus ride. Plenty of parking. When we first arrived the room was cold so they gave us an extra heater which helped. The first night we had a snack in the bar which was very good. We had breakfast in the bar every morning as we wished to have our dog with us which was fantastic. I am not a cooked breakfast person so the choice was limited. Our room was nice and spacious and one evening we had room service which was timely, efficient and tasted very good. Every member of staff we encountered were very friendly and helpful. Inadvertently we left an iPad behind in the room, as we were driving back home we got a call from reception to say they had found it. Nothing was too much trouble they packaged it up and returned it to us. Thank you Abbots Barton for your efforts.

I shall review the hotel on a bed and breakfast basis only, and the Fountain restaurant separately. Stayed here from 12th to 17th Feb with friends, this is a fine Victorian Gothic style building with modern extensions to the rear, plenty of free parking ( when there is not a wedding on). Hotel reception was friendly and efficient as we were on D/B/B it was explained that we were allowed £30 PER PERSON to order from the ridiculously overpriced menu, anything over the £30 per person would be added to our final bill. With careful choice in choosing you could just about get a three course meal in budget, but more about that later. We were directed to our room which was of good size, the room was well furnished in English hotel style and very clean and warm. The bathroom was of a good size nice and clean too. The carpet and decoration was in good order. All of the corridors were carpeted, clean and decorated with period style paintings on the walls, the hotel had a nice ambience about it. After a very good nights sleep in a very comfortable bed we went down for breakfast, a buffet affair with everything you could reasonably want, nicely cooked and well presented,when an elderly Italian gentleman “PIETRO “ was on duty, everything ran like a well oiled machine (PIETRO was the breakfast head waiter and his years of service turned waiting on table into an art form) food and crockery were always available and everything was topped up immediately it was required, tables were cleared of crockery as you finished with it and it was excellent. Unfortunately when PIETRO was off duty standards slipped, food and crockery kept running out, one day the baine Marie for the bacon wasn't even plugged in, and the used crockery and breakfast things just piled up on the table until we had finished. But all in all we had a good wholesome breakfast each morning to set us up for the day. In conclusion I would rate this hotel as a good bed and breakfast hotel within good striking distance of Canterbury town centre. My wife and I would happily return here on a bed and breakfast basis only. The Fountain Restaurant, We were very much looking forward to our evening meal as the menu looked tempting, if overpriced. All side orders of vegetables were priced at £3.50 each We selected grilled prawns as a starter, it consisted of 3 small prawns on a lettuce leaf, £9.00 per person. My wife ordered the whole peppered mackerel with accompanying vegetables, he mackerel was one small fillet of, presented on a bed of vegetables which had been given a bad tasting garnish, £14, I ordered the slow cooked belly of pork @£19; And was presented with half of a pork strip approx 4 inches by 1/2 inch by 1 inch thick, it was 50% fat and an absolute rip off, My friend ordered the minute steak which was tough, over cooked and served with hand cut chips, which as a result of being fried at too high a temperature were over cooked on the outside and a little under cooked in the middle. The sweets were an assortment of catering supplier sourced gateaux and tarts or ice cream starting from £6 per portion. We retired to the bar area after a vey disappointing meal, we the looked at the bar menu, and decided that tomorrow we would order from that, as our thinking was and my friend said ( a chef of 60 years experience, who I may add I have never heard complain about hotel food before) “ it takes a special kind of talent to f—-k up a burger. Little did we know, the chef had this special talent, two of us had the burger, Black on the outside, the cheese topping had literally evaporated in the microwave during reheating and dry throughout, inedible and £13 each We requested the duty manager and voiced our disappointment we asked for the chef to come to our table, he was embarrassed went to see the chef and came back and said” the chef said he didn't make them, he just warmed them up”really? We decided that two nights of culinary disaster was enough and changed our reservation to bed and breakfast only for the next three days and asked for an adjustment to our room rate, as would eat out for the rest of our stay. The next day we were advised that upon booking in we were given the wrong information, the evening meal allowance should have been £30 per room, not per person. I attach photos of the menus, it is not possible for two persons to have two courses at these inflated prices, a totally misleading interpretation of bed, breakfast and evening meal and I suspect in contravention of sales description legislation. In all honesty this is the very worse hotel food I / we have ever endured which surprises me as I have read all reviews going back to 2012 and a couple posted since our return. Was the chef sick and not on duty ? Did they have an agency cook during our stay? I have no idea, but in fairness to the hotels reputation they should have closed the restaurant. My friend made the observation, the hotel is full, the car park is full, but the maximum people we saw in the restaurant was seven, including our party of four, every picture tells a story!!k

We stayed here between xmas and new year. And it was lovely. Big fires friendly staf & knowledgeable. Great parking and a superb set you up for the day breakfast. Room was Clean warm with tea & coffee. Nice bar lots of sleepy dogs in front of fire...I loved it ...a calm oasis after xmas. We were all ready to explore Canterbury and Whitstable.

In spite of being a Best Western Rewards Diamond member, the shocking service I received from Management of this hotel beggars belief. It all started with a leaking shower which could not be fixed on a Saturday “because maintenance wasn't on until Tuesday”! Then offered 25% discount by Duty Manager for my next stay, but when I checked in they denied all knowledge and the Duty Manager in question was (conveniently) “on leave”. In my opinion the General Manager should be dismissed as they run a pathetic organisation that will never see me again. Sadly Canterbury is so busy that they will always be full and continue with their “take it or leave it” attitude.

Comfortable hotel, good location, pleasant appearance. Breakfast was very good. The bed was a bit uncomfortable too large and undulating. A reasonable walk into the city centre where we went to the cinema and had dinner before walking back.

Wish could give more stars as it deserves it. Our room was amazing it was huge also had a jacuzzi bath. Definitely had the wow factor. We had a meal the restaurant the food was amazing waiter was very friendly . The only criticism of the restaurant was the course seemed to come out very close together. After the meal we went through to the bar the waiter offer to bring through the rest of my bottle of wine and the ice bucket the bar Amman was very friendly too. I do feel breakfast was bit of let down not very friendly staff not rude just not chatty or helpful. That aside plenty of choice of food for breakfast yummy rhubarb juice Reception staff were lovely too Can not recommend this hotel enough Will most definitely be returning at some point Thank you so much for a fantastic stay

We have spent one really enjoyable night at this hotel, it was the 1st time we brought our dog with us and the hotel with their super friendly and polite staff could not have done any more to make life easy for us and Daisy! Dog bowl and blanket were provided and we were able to eat in the bar with her. A really lovely experience and we will definitely bring Daisy with us again, Ps and the food was really good.

Stayed for one night for my husbands birthday. Booked the restaurant for the evening, our dinner was superb. As it was midweek I wondered if the full al a cart menu would be available, it was and was excellent. Breakfast was self service, full English everything available and kept restocked. Plenty of fresh fruit and cereal. The staff here are very helpful and courteous. The hotel is spotless and very welcoming. This hotel has own parking and 8 minute walk to high street. So very convenient. Canterbury has a lot of History and lovely shopping, so lots of interesting places to visit.

As with Best Western generally, this hotel has a traditional style, and is all the better for it. If you want the "contemporary" look, you won't like the period feel and decor, but I personally liked it. The staff are very good, breakfast is excellent, the rooms are comfortable, clean and well appointed. Ample free onsite parking despite its location only 15 mins walk from the centre of Canterbury is a big plus. One minor issue is the way the building has been extended may mean a long trail through corridors, up and down short flights of stairs and through multiple fire doors. Easy if you are fit and carrying little or no luggage; a major effort if you have heavy/large bags. But I assume staff would have assisted if I'd asked them. Other than that, it's perfect.

Stayed for 2 nights, dated decor but clean & tidy enough with helpful staff, spot on for a 3 star. Please don't use the restaurant in the evening though how on earth they were awarded an AA rosette I will never know, it was awful!!

It was a last minute trip as the one we had planned (to Spain) had to be cancelled as documents were lost days before we were meant to leave... Our disappointment notwithstanding, we enjoyed our time in Canterbury and the hotel was adequately located for us to explore the city. Room was ok, nothing special, but good enough for us. Breakfast not special, but acceptable. Value for money was pretty reasonable, too.

A strikingly stunning building ideally located for those exploring Canterbury. The building has a quaint feel to it. Has plenty of character. Welcomes dogs. Efficient and effective service throughout our stay. Foods wise we only had breakfast. A buffet affair, but orders for alternatives were available. I can say the kippers were a delight. Fresh fruit platter is always a winner. I can also recommend the sausages and lime juice. The car parking is the only negative. Small car park and small spaces.

My husband and myself stayed for a couple of days last week. Staff are very freindly and helpful, made us feel welcome on arrival. Hotel is in a great location, only a short walk into town, and the cathedral. Our room was lovely, had all the facilities we needed. We didn't dine in the hotel in the evening, but we can recommend the breakfasts that were great, plenty of choices,.

Only stooped one night , excellent looking cation (of me) , used the bar for food at night , good menu choice ,excellent breakfast , friendly staff , room clean and tidy. I was on the top floor, if your not able body , you may prefer a lower room

We come to Abbots several times a year for long weekends. Our regular returns says it all. We see changes in Reception Staff from time to time, but we are always welcomed as if "coming home" and there is never a shortage of helpfulness and good cheer. Our room is always well-serviced and while we eat out (with local family members) more often than not, when we have dined or breakfasted in the hotel it has always been good.

This is a lovely, comfortable hotel, full of gothic character. The decor suits the 200yr old building, giving it a feeling of warmth and grandeur. I booked a one night stay as a surprise for hubby for our Anniversary. I felt the price was reasonable and they offered a free upgrade which I was happy to accept. Hubby was impressed with my choice - the room was spacious with everything you'd expect:- tea, coffee, TV, Wi-Fi & a sumptuous bed and the unexpected bonus of a jacuzzi bath. The lovely staff had left us an anniversary card and truffles which was a lovely gesture. We felt quite spoiled. We had dinner in their fountain restaurant. The chef had made bread rolls and marmite butter beautifully presented on a slate. Tasted delicious. There was plenty of choice on the menu for vegetarians and for those who are gluten free. The portions look deceptively small due to the huge plates they are presented on but they are filling. Good quality food. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the shrouds of white tablecloths. Maybe some colour needs to be layered over the white. The room was warm and quiet, we turned the AC unit off for the night. Breakfast was the usual buffet choice, fresh and tasty and you could order other things if you wished. I recommend this hotel for a quiet getaway and I will return. We have stayed at this hotel on a number of occasions. The rooms are lovely and the staff helpful and friendly. The location is excellent within easy walking distance of the city centre. The restaurant food is very good and can also be taken in the bar. Whitstable is a short drive away and next along the coast try Tankerton Castle for a cream tea after a walk along the shore.

A group of us stayed here on a business trip for 3 nights . Wow, we were all absolutely blown away and delighted with every aspect of our stay, it was a shame we had to work each day! The hotel staff without exception are fabulous, they seriously can't do enough for you. The food in the restaurant is stunning, gastronomic perfection and if I lived closer I'd be in for lunch and dinner on a regular basis.

Beautiful friendly hotel ! The catering staff were in particular so attentive and lovely and food amazing ! Bed and room very comfortable ! My only feedback would have been to have some herbal tea eg camomile added to the tray in the bedroom ! Thanks

Room was warm, clean and quiet as building is set back from the busy road. Reception staff were cheerful and friendly. Only a short 10 minute walk into Canterbury. We would certainly stay here again. There were even gluten free biscuits with the tea making facilities as I mentioned I needed gluten free in the booking.

My wife, dog and I stayed here for 4 nights in Jan 2018 for a city break. This is a delightfully old fashioned building with winding corridors and lots of wood panelling. All areas were spotless and the room was well equipped. While the facilities are limited, the staff more than made up for it with the sort of service I expect from 5 star. The bar/lounge was quiet and friendly with a small library and board games available. The restaurant was expensive but the food was fabulous. As a Coeliac, I found the labelling on the menu particularly helpful. Location also good; just a short walk to the city centre. Good value for those seeking a quiet break.

Stayed one night, booked through work. Great location in town but also quiet and set in own grounds. Bit 1980's decor with swags and tails but I thought it was sweet. Breakfast was very tasty with good choice although did think it a bit odd there was nothing ‘wet' on the full English- no beans etc! Single bed in room- work booked single room so can't complain but most hotels seem to give you a double nowadays even if you're a single traveller. Would stay there again, very clean, nice and friendly staff.

Great service and good value for money. The rooms are clean and well appointed and the food was very good. The staff are very friendly and welcoming. The hotel is only a short walk to the centre of Canterbury (15 min), but is in a quiet location just off the main road. Highly recommended.

Only about 15 minutes walk to the city made this a great location for our one night stay so we could explore Canterbury. We were Very surprised to be upgraded to the bridal suite which was lovely! What a nice gesture. Would recommend this hotel and will stay again if we go back To Canterbury.

Stayed here for one night in January. The reception staff were friendly, polite and informative. We had a great dinner in the restaurant, the staff again were friendly and helpful. The room was warm, spacious and nicely decorated. This hotel is close to the city and has ample free parking, the staff are wonderful and the rooms comfortable and spacious. What more could you want! We will definitely visit again!

We stayed for 2 night an had a great time staff are friendly an very helpful we had breakfast on both mornings an 1 evening meal the food was lovely. It's only a 10 mins walk to the shopping centre. I would definitely recommend an we will definitely book again the next time we have go to visit family

Stayed in mid December for a two night stay. I had a single room which was very well appointed, with a very comfortable bed and the bed next to the radiator, so keeping the room nice & toasty was very easy. Good sized bathroom and the shower was very powerful and hot. There were Christmas parties on each night I was there but I wasn't disturbed by any undue noise, in fact if you weren't downstairs you wouldn't have known a party was happening! Previous comments mention noise (slamming doors etc) but this is generally due to fellow patrons with no awareness of their surroundings or consideration for their fellow guests. This happens at any hotel so always carry a pair of earplugs if you are that sensitive to noise! Nice bar area - being an ale drinker would have been nice to have the local brew on draught rather than in bottles but a minor gripe. Cannot comment on food as ate out in Canterbury for the duration of the stay but staff were pleasant, helpful & friendly and if I return to Canterbury wouldn't hesitate to use this hotel again. It is in a very good location for exploring Canterbury as only a 10 min walk from everything.

We got a good deal but forgot to add breakfast. Through the website this would have cost an extra £9 for two of us but we were unable to change the reservation on line. The hotel would not let us cancel and rebook (despite us calling within 10 mins of placing the booking) but would let us add breakfast for an extra £25! The booking site were happy to cancel and rebook but needed the hotels permission which they refused to give! When we arrived we were told where our room was which took ages to reach. In reality, we discovered a staircase next to our room which led directly to reception! Why direct us the long way?Door was very hard to open and lock on inside was unsafe imo. The hotel itself looked lovely from the outside and is in a great location. We paid under £50 for 1 night and would not pay more than this. Would have given more stars if hotel would have honored the advertised price instead of trying to get more money from us.

The location of this hotel is great. Only 10-15 minutes walk to the city centre and easy to use as a base for exploring Canterbury and the surrounding areas. Also great as it has free parking. Hotel staff are friendly, polite and welcoming. The hotel has character but it is old and is in need of a bit of tlc and modernisation. This hotel is not the best to stay at for comfort though. The beds are old, lumpy and uncomfortable. The pillows are awful, flat and seems like they have had them for donkeys years. The hotel is very noisy at night from door slamming, hearing people above, to the side of you, in the bath, talking etc and noisy fans or air conditioning units going all night. Also, the breakfast is just ok and certainly not worth £12.95, the sausages look like they have not been cooked and the bacon looked uncooked too. Bit of a poor choice for everything else too. For comfort, the premier inn just along the road is far better. I don't think I would return to this hotel.

Only a short walk to Canterbury cathedral and the shops in town. Very pleasant staff and comfortable rooms. I was also very happy with the decorations, and the characteristic furniture. I found that the maps they had at the vounter were also helpful in finding my wy as O explored the old town.

My daughter and I spent 1 night in this amazing hotel in Canterbury. From the building to the rooms and the staff this was an amazing experience. I would recommend this hotel 1000% to anyone who is looking for comfort and indulgence.

Room very good, large and practical with good lighting. Food was excellent throughout the stay. Staff were hardworking,friendly and helpfull. Ideally located for visiting the town centre with it's wonderful Cathedral.Really enjoyed the stay and wouldn't hesitate 2 recommend this hotel. .

We loved every moment of our stay, from the moment you walk in you will be impressed. We had room 103 which was spacious, clean and well equipped with a view over the front towards the grounds. We enjoyed a drink or two in their bar and found it to be overall a nice place to spend a few nights (the Hotel, not the bar although I could have). It is about a 10 min walk to the city centre so good for those wanting to see the Cathedral etc. We ate in their restaurant for breakfast and dinner, on both occasions we felt the service and food to be good too. They have a good amount of parking too if it helps? Overall we would definitely book here again if passing through.

We were very please with the hotel. the room was lovely and the staff very polite and helpful. We also attended the Gala evening and meal. Service was great and the staff worked very hard serving some 60 people in one serving. Unfortunately we felt a bit disappointed as the food was not that great, good portion sizes but a little over cooked for our liking. Good fun atmosphere. Thanks to Ms Vogle for all your hard work

A lovely hotel, prompt service and lovely common space. Single room was fine and there was plenty of parking. About a 15 min walk to the town centre. Unless you want to be right in the centre, this is a good choice.

Very comfortable hotel, an almost level 12 minute walk to the town centre. We found the room spacious with a very good bed, our executive room had a sofa, so was perfect for a sit down after a day of sight seeing and shopping. We were in 319,( the only draw back was a somewhat noisy fan that kicked in from time to time but we were not sure where the noise came from) there is a lift and 4 stairs up to the room. The bathroom was generous. We enjoyed the breakfast and there was a good choice of hot and cold for most tastes. The scrambled eggs were very good! The bar and lounge has comfortable seating as well. The Odeon cinema is 11 minutes walk down the road and though old from outside is very comfortable inside so we were able to see the new Star Wars film as well. This is a great position for visiting as parking is very expensive in the area and you do not need to use your car unless you want to go further afield.We did take a lovely walk on Ramsgate beach.

Beautiful building in a lovely city. It's about 10 minute walk from the city centre. The decor is a bit tired and dated. There is nothing special about this place, that being said its an OK budget hotel.

When arriving at this property you think what a lovely place When checking in, having already paid in full prior to arrival , I was asked to leave the credit card behind the reception I informed the Lady that it was an office card , which was used to make a payment in full, and I did not have it she then asked me to leave my personal card which I also refused to do. A manager came to see what was going on and informed me that if I didn't leave a card I would not be allowed to stay in the hotel she then stated I could leave a copy of my driving licence, which I did but asked for it back in the morning . This did not happen! I went to the Bar for a lager It was NOT cold. I asked the manger and it was replaced but still the same NOT cold! I ordered a burger off the bar menu when this arrived it didn't have any condiments or salad just 2 battered onion rings and some garnish. It was not good . I did ask the Under Manger and UNDER MANAGER agreed , that it was not good On my way to the room I asked the lady at reception to cancel my breakfast as I did not think that the quality was going to be there. This was at 9 PM The room was Nice and big but bed lining and wallpaper had holes and the rest of the room was very tiered I left the hotel at 7AM asked if breakfast had been removed from my bill and was told No I also asked why the bed lining had holes in it the Lady that wasn't very helpful the day before told me I was a very rude man and that the operations Manger had listened to the CCTV and He agreed with her . I then phoned Best Western and they contacted Mark and informed of my displeasure and have sent an email to me apologising So all I am going to say please see photos .

Arrived to friendly, welcoming staff. This is our second stay here and was just as good as first although still had a room without a view! Rooms are comfortable, food is good, staff lovely and an ideal location for exploring Canterbury. Will certainly return.

Part of my birthday present this year was once again to stay at this beautiful hotel. We were given the very delightful de luxe room 103 . How wonderful it was. We are Best Western members so have stayed in many different BW hotels with very different rooms but have never before been offered such wonderful accommodation. Thank you so much. Your staff are so welcoming,lovely smiles which means a lot to us. Our only problem is that you are often fully booked and we have to check in to the chain down the road!!

Set off a main road, yet not disturbed by traffic in the slightest. The hotel has quite a myriad of corridors to manoeuvre your way around, but once the room was found it was very nice. TV, free wifi, spacious room and bathroom were both appreciated. Didn't make use of the dinner or breakfast service as I know the city well but you are able to order all the foods from the restaurant to room service as well which looked like a bonus

Visited for an overnight stay in December 2017. We stayed in the old part of the hotel (room 102) which was pleasant and our room was spacious. Around a 10-15 walk from the centre of Canterbury, we felt perfectly safe on the route even late at night. Would recommend for a good value for money stay in Canterbury.

When booking this hotel ask for a quiet room with no dogs next door. The heating via the air condition unit is very noisy. The breakfast was delicious with plenary of variety. The service was very good. The walk into Canterbury is very easy one straight road with a cinema on the corner.

We stayed at Abbots Barton Hotel for 2 nights and wished it could have been longer. The staff are helpful and friendly - nothing is too much trouble. The room was warm and comfortable and very clean - we wouldn't hesitate to stay again when in the area Very handy for the centre of town within a 10 minute walk

2 Night Stay early December 2017. The hotel is very conveniently located a short (10-15 minutes) way from the cathedral, with on-site off-road parking in a reasonable well-lit area. The rooms are comfortable enough although the beds are standard size, so if you are 6 foot or over your feet will probably stick out of the end of the bed. The view from the 3rd floor at the rear of the hotel is, as another reviewer pointed out, onto a building site, but if you're only sleeping in your room that shouldn't be a problem. The bathrooms are an adequate size and not too tightly fitted that manoeuvring is a problem. The shower is an over the bath type and provides a good spread of hot water, but why do hotels still use shower curtains (horrible things!)? That said, the bedroom & bathroom were clean, and the bath towels a very good size and quality. The staff were very hospitable and friendly, although it does look like we were charged for 2 breakfasts when only 1 was had. The bar is comfortable and the staff efficient. There was a Christmas party being held during our stay but, apart from an irritating very long wait in the restaurant for our meal, there was very little disruption. The food was exceptionally good, which partly compensated for the long wait to be served, but the second night, when there seemed to be few guests dining in the restaurant, there was still a wait a bit longer than was comfortable. The food when it arrived was again very good. The hotel is an old Abbey, but has gone through several transitions since those days whilst retaining some period features such as the arch shaped doorways and carved crosses above the doorway. Wi-fi was a problem during our stay and despite the best efforts of a few staff no connection was achieved during our stay – not a disaster but inconvenient. There was also an issue with the heating; apparently the hotel is undergoing some improvements but for several hours there was no heat in our room. Overall, if we were staying in the area again we would be happy to return to this hotel.

Welcoming reception team were very friendly, helpful and cheerful Our room was warm, clean and comfortable with everything that we needed. Bar area was very busy early evening and could have done with more attenders. The function room was set out with all different parties on seperate tables. Our table in the middle was a little squashed with very little arm room. The food was a mixture of good and bad. Lots of people waiting for their courses to arrive along with vegetables. I couldn't fault my starter of mackerel but my beef main course was very tough and had to be left. Friends sat near to me commented that the Christmas pudding appeared to be salty rather than sweet. Breakfast this morning was very busy however it was very plentiful and everything anyone wanted seemed to be on offer. The hotel is situated very near to the city centre and is easily reached in approximately 10 minutes.

From when you pull into the car park you can see it's an impressive looking , clean hotel. Staff extremely friendly, informative and helpful . My sister and I booked two double rooms (303/302) for single occupancy and were pleased to find we were placed next door to each other as requested. The rooms were fresh, clean , large and comfortable, with big flat screen tv's and comfy beds . My only gripe was that the pillows were rather thin for my liking. Nice deep baths with mixer taps and large shower head . Complimentary tea, coffee , hot chocolate , biscuits and toiletries. Rooms were warm with the option to turn down the heat via the controls on the radiators. Downstairs is tastefully decorated in a deep shade of wine with brass fittings , all in keeping to the style of the building and had a very luxurious feel to it. There was a cosy bar and plenty of quiet seating areas dotted around to enjoy our drinks . The restaurant was also clean and pleasant to the eye, all done up pretty for Christmas, as was the rest of the downstairs . We didn't eat there so cannot comment on the food but I'm sure it's lovely. The building has a lift too. All in all we were extremely happy with everything the hotel had to offer at such a great price too! . We will definitely be returning.

We had a one night stay in this quaint hotel and found it very clean and comfortable, staff were very helpful and friendly, breakfast was of a good standard and lots of it, We had an upgrade room and it was very well presented, we would have preferred a shower but there was only a small bath, (others in our group did have showers) the only complaint I could make is that the room was very warm and it wasn't possible to turn down the radiators any more, it was a cold night but we had to have the windows open. We did explain this to the reception and they were very apologetic.

I had a very short stay at your Hotel but it was a pleasant one!! The Staff were Friendly and Helpful, the room was cozy and clean. I could have used an iron for my clothing however it wasn't the be all and end all. Overall I enjoyed my stay!!!

It was such a nice change to stay in this older style but charming hotel with its cosy bedrooms and public spaces. Our room,104,was huge with a king sized bed and a good sized bathroom with an over bath shower. The staff are friendly and helpful and the breakfast,which has all you could want to eat really sets you up for the day. A 10 minute walk will find you in the centre of Canterbury with its shops,tea rooms and the wonderful Cathedral. I could write so much more about the hotel but check out the many photos which show you all you need to know. We have stayed in Canterbury a few times over the years and this is by far the nicest hotel we have stayed in.

I really enjoyed staying in this charming hotel close to the centre of Canterbury. It is located just outside the city walls, about a 10 minute walk to the Cathedral. The staff were very friendly and quick to help. The decor is charming and traditional, and the room was very comfortable. It was quiet and we slept very well in the excellent bed. I also really liked the bar area, which was a quiet and cosy place to hang out in.

We have been before for a two night mid week stay. Mainly to look round Canterbury. The markets and Cathedral. We always ask for room 104, it's the biggest in the old part of the hotel. Tuns of space and a great view out of the front of the hotel. Staff are always helpful and the breakfast is good value.

We came to Canterbury to attend a ball and stayed for two nights. From the greeting by the receptionist team when we arrived to the time we departed the staff could not have been better. They were genuinely happy to help and give you the attention you needed. We ate in the bar on Friday evening and the food was delicious. The room was very clean, well laid out and pleasantly decorated. Car parking on site was another bonus. It is clearly a well run hotel with happy staff that I would recommend it and stay there again.

Clean, friendly, quaint and historical hotel. Modern and spacious rooms on the inside. Its the little touches for me like a lovely dressing on the side salad with our lunchtime sandwiches. We would certainly return here for a weekend visit to Canterbury as it is only a ten minute walk into the centre.

Somewhat old fashioned hotel. Room dated with a shower curtain over the bath: how dated is that especially when it sticks to your bum! No sign of any of the improvements going on. No builders or scaffolding etc. Handy for the town centre especially as driving and parking there is a nightmare but you can walk from the hotel in 10 minutes Breakfast very good and worth a try The only real negative was the really cheap and uncomfortable pillows and although we like a firm mattress the one here was unbelievably hard. Easy and free to park your car.

Stayed here for 2 nights as part of a Virgin Experience package which my parents bought for my special birthday. Deal included 1 night's stay with bed, breakfast and evening meal - we paid for an extra night and breakfast to make a nice long weekend. The hotel is located just outside the city centre and appears to have plenty of parking (although the website warns limited parking on a first come first served basis). The reception staff are welcoming and efficient and we checked in very quickly. We stayed in room 215 which had an enormous double bed and plenty of room for both of us. the room was clean but quite warm but had aircon. We booked over included evening meal for the Friday - the restaurant wasn't busy but the staff were efficient and friendly and took our order quickly. The food was delicious and hot and well presented, and plentiful. Breakfast was buffet style although there is a menu of freshly cooked items if you wish like a vegetarian breakfast or smoked salmon. The only downside to the whole weekend was the heat of the hotel, everywhere. Whilst the aircon worked it was very noisy and kept us awake. The room has complementary tea, coffee and hot chocolate and you can take drinks from the bar to your room, a hairdryer and a trouser press and a TV with freeview. After a long day shopping in the cold and rain the bath was very welcome. The hotel is only a short walk from the city centre where there are lots of shops (major and individual) to meander. There are also lots of touristy things to do like the city walls, museums and cathedral and plenty of places to eat. There are also a couple of cinemas and theatres. All in all a lovely hotel with great staff, Canterbury is well worthwhile visiting.

it was a pleasure visit the hotel two times in the last three months and I would like to highlight a few strength points: very nice athmosfpheric hotel, a lovely team that facilitate your stay from the breakfast (congrats Pietro), with good advices and plans to go ( thanks to the reception team, Johanna) to the bed time and the sleep quality. The location is excellent and you can go walking to the city centre. We will return soon.

My family and I enjoyed a almost daydreaming experience in this lovely hotel. All the people working in here are really kind and polite. The restaurant haves a relaxing atmosphere with lovely staff. This hotel is perfect for any kind of traveller. Charming and beautiful, I'd really recommend it.

Booked a room last minute as we decided to have a night out in canterbury, Staff were very polite and welcoming. Had a bite to eat in the bar before we went out which was delicious. Breakfast was well cooked and filling, annoyed with myself that I hadn't realised I could have ordered poached eggs. Would definitely stay again.

We booked this last minute, we've had a good stay here before. and were not disappointed this time. Only one night this time, we were delighted to have been upgraded to a Deluxe room. Nicely appointed, with some themed decoration it was very comfortable and warm. The bathroom was a spa bath, which was nice to relax in, ( well for the boss, it's her thing.) We had a lovely dinner in the restaurant, I had the soup which was very tasty, followed by lamb rumps, oh my delicious doesn't cover it. We were both too full to take advantage of the sweet menu. A nice touch was, the maitre'd asked how we were enjoying our visit. we mentioned it was my wife's birthday, blow me down....they only came out with a platter of chocolates, such a nice touch. We were late down to breakfast, and were worried we'd missed the buffet, no worries, we still had plenty of choice, and nice and fresh too. I've recommended this hotel before and stand by my recommendation, it's easy to get to from the A2, close to the city, can't think of a negative. A lovely characterful building, definitely not a eurobox hotel, we will be back.

Great setting for anyone who's visiting Canterbury great location and only ten minutes walk to the city centre .rooms well laid out and very clean and comfortable breakfast is fantastic and well cooked will recommend to anyone who is visiting here.

Had a pleasant evening meeting relatives on our way to France. We had dinner in the bar area and the staff had laid up a nice table for us in there. Shame though they do not have a bar menu any longer as the men were looking forward to "fish 'n chips". The bar menu is now the same as the restaurant one. Elena was our waiting staff who was most efficient. Although I had requested a bedroom on the ground floor we were allocated one on the top floor.

Wow! What a great hotel with plenty of character (yes some creaking floor boards) and a great location in Canterbury. Very quiet. Hadn't expected the hotel to be in as good a condition as it was, my room was well equipped and even had two beds I didn't need as I only booked a double! Food very good and service is very quick and friendly in the bar, used the restaurant for breakfast and even though it was a buffet still had excellent service.

My husband and I stayed here for 2 nights before travelling onto Brighton. Easy to find, ample FREE parking spaces. On arrival check-in was qick and efficient. We were told we'd been upgraded, and given directions to our room. We were asked if we'd like to make reservations for dinner, or needed newspapers the following morning. Our room was huge! Our room was overlooking a quiet garden & patio area. The room was lovely and warm, and we were provided with complimentary tea, coffee, hot chocolate, biscuits, and a coffee machine with assorted capsules. The bathroom was large, with a Jacuzzi. Both rooms were very clean. The room location was quiet too. Breakfast was plentiful with a great range of choice, Including vegetarion options. Staff were all very efficient and polite. We had evening drinks in the bar, there is a menu with numerous choices. The hotel location is within walking distance of the city centre, where all high street stores can be found, as can all main tourist attractions. There is also a bus service passing the hotel. All in all we enjoyed our stay here and would stay again when in Canterbury. Highly recommended. We stayed in room 107

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING VENUE,Fantastic ....They even allowed me(Sam's Mum) to spring a surprise visit from The Vipers CORP of Drums (Situated in their Car Park)... Food was awesome thoroughly recommend their Sussex Brisket (melt in the mouth),their vanilla cheesecake and passion fruit coulixxxxAmazing. The rooms were spotless and totally suitable for the wedding party and guests. The evening was effortlessly transformed into Disco and the evening was Spectacular.xxxccc Massive Thank you from Mr and Mrs Fields(Grace and Graham).xxxxc Lots of tea in the evening absolutely priceless (for myself as a non drinker). The weather was a good as a Summers day.x

I REALLY wanted to love this hotel, as I'm a sucker for pretty, historic properties. First the good news: parking was easy for our car rental (which was the main reason we chose this property), check-in and check-out were simple, and the town center and cathedral are a pleasant walk from the hotel. Our room was relatively comfortable but dated. The bathroom (while large) had no surface area near the sink to place toiletries. There was an electric kettle in the room but instant coffee was not going to satisfy this American's taste! (There was also only 1 packaged biscuit in a room for 2 people). Most disappointing was the breakfast. Despite the fact that we were one of the few parties there, our breakfast took about 40 minutes to arrive. Our server was quite ditsy -- she started to walk away after taking my order without taking my husband's; she was clearly unfamiliar with the (limited) menu; she would talk with another staff member about other patrons in the restaurant -- making the meal fairly uncomfortable. We only stayed one night and it was adequate enough for our needs.

We wanted a reasonable priced hotel within walking distance of central Canterbury, We chose this hotel because it looked nice in the photos and was only £74 including breakfast. We had a very nice stay, the reception ladies were cheerful and efficient and even allowed us to book in early. The hotel may not be to everyones taste, the decor is like a traditional country house, which suits its exterior. Our room was comfortable and clean with everything we needed and we enjoyed our meal in the restaurant and relaxing afterwards in the lounge area with our coffee. The main advantage of this hotel is their very friendly helpful staff, everyone we met including receptionists, waiting staff, restaurant manager and the breakfast staff were so pleasant.

Lovely old place to stay. Perfect for a weekend visit to Canterbury. Great location, no more than 10 minutes walk into town centre. Just off the road side but far enough away to feel like country house setting.

We picked this hotel due to its location and easy walking distance into Canterbury also because of the Best Western name, but beware Best Western are not a chain of hotels. They are all individually owned and only have the Best Western name, which means where you might get excellent service at one you may not get this at another. We had an executive double room which was clean and spacious, breakfast was good with a reasonable choice which should be adequate for most people's needs. The evening dinner menu is a bit limited and a bit on the expensive side, the first night we had a bar meal which was nice but took an hour to arrive, the second night we ate in the restaurant as it was our anniversary, we had issues with the quality of the main course where the meat was inedible but on checkout the cost was removed from our bill by the Manager, but our night was still ruined. Overall this is a three star hotel with a good location. As it is only a ten minute walk into Canterbury there are lots of places to eat out and we go down this route again if we returned.

Having had an interesting visit to Dover Castle we decided to stay overnight in Canterbury. Abbots Barton Hotel is only a ten minutes walk from the Cathedral. Don't let the fact it's on a main road put you off as the hotel is so far set back we could hear no traffic noise. Good parking. Very friendly and professional staff. Room was excellent and so was the food. Food possibly at the upper end, but drinks very reasonable, so balanced out and overall was good value. Definitely recommend it.

Very clean hotel, fine breakfast and friendly staff. I'm glad the windows in my room opened as it was very hot in the bathroom! Room 221.though the room was very quiet - in spite of a wedding reception taking place in another part of the hotel. Booked a 1 night stay as an anniversary treat for myself and wife, on checking in there was a sign in reception stating that there was a wedding being held at the hotel that day and there would be some noise from music up to midnight. In my opinion this should have been disclosed on taking our booking to give us the option to book elsewhere if we had wanted to. Our room 108 was clean but very small overlooking a dumping ground at the rear of the hotel, the towel radiator in the bathroom pumped out heat 24/7 and there was no means to turn it down as the valves just spun round, meaning the small room became very hot very quickly, the only way to combat this was to open the window and turn the air conditioning on. We could hear everything in the room directly above us including when they used the toilet, it sounded like they were going to fall through the ceiling into our room. The noise we had been warned about on checking in did carry on till late with a lot of noise from wedding guests in the corridor outside our room until well after midnight and to compound our misery the bed was so firm it was like sleeping on a sheet of plaster board. I did mention on checkout that it wasn't a great room or night and the receptionist apologised. On a positive the breakfast was good and the staff in the restaurant attentive and I appreciate all of the above are first world problems but if you only get the odd night out together.....

Our twins are in uni in Canterbury so when we visit we always stay here. Lovely peaceful surroundings, pretty rooms, comfortable and clean and lovely staff. I cannot comment on the food as we tend to eat out with our twins and their friends but we enjoy drinks in the relaxing bar in the evening. Look forward to our next visit.

Stayed overnight this weekend 7th 8th October the hotel is only a short walk from the town. It is situated in its own ground my partner and I enjoyed our stay the staff were attentive and looked after our every need . The bedroom was clean and had all facilities,the bathroom was also spotless.We enjoyed our evening meal excellently cooked and presented. At breakfast the choice was unbelievable so much to choose from,we decided to have the cooked breakfast but sadly it was barely warm such a shame, and then a staff member(elderly gentleman) took my plate away while partner was still eating and did not ask if I had finished. I would recommend the hotel to my friends and family and look forward to returning for a longer stay.

The hotel were very accommodating on our arrival, allowing us to check in early, I had phoned the day before asking to check in a bit early but arrived even earlier than expected & this didn't pose a problem. Our room was nice, clean & well appointed although a bit too warm overnight, we didn't have time to use the restaurant but it looked quite nice, have given 5 stars based on our room & attitude of staff which was excellent.

This is a great place! Situated a few blocks away from bustling Canterbury sits this delightful hotel. Once a manor house built in the 1800's it's been enlarged to be a charming hotel. Hallways are narrow, floors creak (do ask for a room on the top floor) and you'll likely be walking up some stairs to get to your room. This is all part of the experience. Beds are comfortable and unique to England-king beds are available. The breakfast is wonderful-Best Western's in the states should be this good. The standout is the service-literally from before we came to the day we left- the staff was outstanding. If Canterbury wasn't so far from California I'd frequent this hotel on a regular basis! I can't think that any other lodging in Canterbury would be better.

Excellent staff, very friendly and helpful. Breakfast was good, evening meal on first night was very poor, possibly due to having set meal. Evening meal on last night was fine, so possibly first night was a 'one off'

The hotel staff are nice and friendly, we stayed in the original part of the building. Room was very clean, though a bit dated. Could do with leaving an extra 2 teabags and biscuits for two people rather then just one packet. Bathroom, very clean, sink could have been better located, barred access to bathroom, also squeaky floor, made going to the loo a noisy affair in the middle of the night. I don't know who plans these rooms, heated towel rail, good, but does not! extractor fans that come on with the light great except at night, could do with a separate switch. Mirrors that don't demist! Water, I know we were on the third floor but a bit erratic. Breakfast, was good and hot, a toaster that gives you brown toast without having to put it through the machine more then twice, but the first place I have been to that did not have beans or fried bread as options. Parking, was good, always seemed to be a space. Apart from breakfast we did not eat in, menu looked ok, as we intended to spend our time exploring Canterbury we was more then tempted to walk down in the evening, about 10-15 min. walk. We found several nice looking places, and decided on two which turned out to be really good choices. WE would stay again using it as a base to explore from.

This is a very clean hotel. The room was spotless, and the staff were very professional. However, there was a creaking from the room above mine which continued throughout the night, which interrupted my sleep. Very annoying, although I would definitely use the hotel again.

On the face of it all seemed well. Room was OK, parking available outside and within walking distance of Canterbury town centre. We stayed two nights and when the dining room proved to attract only one other couple on the first night and none but ourselves on the second, warning lights should have come on. The food was excellent but if you order a steak you get virtually nothing with it and have to go for side orders which raise the price. Second night I had a chicken dish and that night I spent most of the time in the bathroom being sick. No I did not report it at the time because I felt so rotten I just wanted to get home and to bed. Discovered one other guest who had similar dish had same problem. There may have been others, I don't know. The quality of the food was fine it just comes down to whether someone washed their hands or not or whether procedures with chicken were not strictly to the book.

Booked this hotel for the night to go to the theatre and was very pleased with our choice. Friendly helpful staff, good location and very clean room. Would definitely use this hotel again as the standard was everything you would expect from a Best Western hotel.

Nice hotel well within walking distance of the city centre. Room was good with plenty of space. usual problem the lighting was not really strong enough for reading by. Breakfast was buffet but much choice and plenty of staff to keep everything full.

I like Best Western hotels. The room was comfortable, clean and reasonably spacious. Mini toiletries supplied for one to use or "steal" as appropriate. The various lounge/bar areas were comfortable and nicely decorated. The staff were friendly, helpful and pleasant. I always rate a hotel by its in-room biscuits and hot drink selection (because I'm cool like that) and I can report that the biscuits were grand (gluten-free too, no less!), so was the hot chocolate, coffee left a bit to be desired. Breakfast buffet had a good range of options - cereal, fruit, yoghurt, nice bread, pastries and hot breakfast. (You need to offer some baked beans though - scrambled eggs without baked beans is a travesty.)

A friendly receptionist greeted us on arrival. Quick check in and up to our room, which was spotlessly clean, spacious, tea/coffee facilities, trouser press, 2 tub chairs and coffee table, walk in wardrobe, hairdryer, TV and lovely fluffy white towels. The bed was really comfortable. Plenty of hot water. No outside noise. Excellent. There are various lounges for comfortable sitting. A bar with good selection of drinks and a restaurant serving superb food. The staff are very cheerful and helpful. Only negative was our room looked out onto a building site, but we wasn't there to look out of the window.

My fiance booked this hotel as a surprise for us both for 4 nights to celebrate our anniversary and all I can say is that I LOVED this hotel! Firstly the staff from check in to check out were so accommodating and friendly that this really made for a lovely atmosphere. Our room was beautiful and contained a four poster bed and had decor which was traditional and suited the hotel theme perfectly. The food at the restaurant is recommended. Although it is not the cheapest place to eat, it is worth it as both the food and the service is impeccable where nothing is too much trouble. If you are looking for a hotel which is really modern or minimalistic then this is not the place for you but if you a looking for a hotel which is historical and that little bit different then do not hesitate to book a stay here!

We booked an Executive room which was lovely and spacious and the bathroom had a jacuzzi bath. the staff were very helpful and friendly and the hotel offers free parking and is a short walk into the city centre.

Good rooms with excellent facilities. There was always plenty of hot water, the bathroom was very clean and the toiletries adequate for our needs. The staff were more than helpful in many ways and nothing was too much trouble for them. The breakfast was very good with a splendid variety of options.

Everything met with our approval. Location ideal just 10 minute walk into city centre. Easy to find driving up from Dover. Lots of parking. Very friendly staff. Dinner and breakfast excellent. Room and facilities good. The only negative was the internal insulation to our 3rd-floor room. The guests in adjoining rooms and on the floor above were not being loud but walking about and opening/closing of doors and drawers transmitted through the walls as if in our room. I hasten to add it did not keep us awake. Similarly, the extractor fan in our bathroom was noisy so, to be considerate to neighbours, we avoided turning on the bathroom light in the middle of the night.

We had a dog friendly room, and it was so great to discover that this hotel really is dog friendly rather than just tolerant. The main restaurant was off limits which is no problem as we could eat in the bar - they even set up a breakfast table in there for us. Perfect. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We arrived early so they placed our room on 'first clean' request enabling us to check in and start our adventures earlier than we expected. Emil - in the restaurant was just fabulous. He was very busy but still looked after us so well for breakfast. Andrew in the bar in the evenings was a superstar. Such a nice guy and knew his way around the bar! The grounds man (didn't catch his name) took the time to say hello and let us know to ask him if we needed anything. The Assistant Manager (really lovely lady) was just the best. In fact the whole team had it all going on and were just a pleasure. We felt well looked after. Room was fab. Right near an exit door for early morning doggy walk, dog blanket and even a water bowl waiting for us in the room! Our only comment was the hotel was extremely busy with large coach groups which put pressure on a limited seating restaurant. This was a challenge for the group we were with but it was the only downfall. Oh - the bed mattresses could do with replacing - bit soft and like a trampoline when one of us turned over!! 10 minutes from the city centre and, although parking is very limited, we didn't have any problem. A great stay in a distinctive hotel, great location and amazing staff. Thank you - we will return!

I cannot thank the htel, but mainly the staff, enough, as they made our stay perfect in every way. so much so that I took time to write personally to the manager to tell him how much we enjoyed our time at the hotel.

We recently hosted a lunch for 36 to celebrate our Golden Wedding. From the moment we first made an enquiry some 6 months before we were treated with courtesy and civility by the Events Manager, Emma Vogle. Nothing was to much trouble and the whole process was tailored to suit our personal needs. On the day itself we were met by the Duty Manager who stayed with us ensuring everything went smoothly, which it certainly did. The Fountain Restaurant looked superb, the staff were all helpful, polite and efficient. The meal itself was superb, all our guests commenting on the high standards in all areas. The whole event was most enjoyable for everyone, helped by the forward planning undertaken on our behalf. Emma and the whole team are a credit to the hotel and are to be applauded, we have no hesitation in recommending this venue.
