"Lovely Meal!!"

5
11/09/2018

We came for lunch on Saturday with my parents to celebrate their anniversary. We had a 2 course meal which was excellent. My mum had the salmon and she said it was lovely, myself and my husband had pea & mint risotto which was really good. We had limoncello & raspberry semi-freddo for dessert and it was delicious. We also had a bottle of house wine - Shiraz, Tango. It was superb. The service was excellent and all of the staff were friendly. Would highly recommend and hope to return.

Stayed Sunday to Friday while working nearby. Clean, comfortable rooms, decent shower, freeview channels, free WiFi with good signal, refreshments tray... Decent breakfast selection with quality products....prompt service and table clearing. Bar area comfortable with a reasonable evening menu, prices a bit steep, but food quality wasn't bad. Fair selection of drinks, bottled and draft, though the John Smiths was rotten. Golden IPA was much better. Lack of some bottled choices 'til Thursday... Friendly staff...Bobby on the bar...and breakfast...and.....Morgan....Paul "Hollywood" (night porter) ??...up for a bit of banter ...just one R.B.F.....?? Would return. If they'd have us !

"Awful food"

1
08/09/2018

We decided to eat in the hotel restaurant... What a disappoint..! They only fresh things on the plate, were the potatoes. They were OK. The salmon was DRY & TASTELESS. The so-called salsa, was a warmed up portion of tinned tomatoes... Seriously, we could have done better ourselves at home. In fact, we would have been extremely embarrassed to serve this awful dish to any of our personal guests...

AnthonyG3627, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Bennybentahm2018, I am extremely sorry to see such a review about your recent experience with us. Your comments do surprise me as we have had nothing but fantastic feedback about this particular menu and about its choices. We certainly do not use tinned products for our main restaurant menu. The salsa is a red pepper based salsa as described on the menu and is prepared freshly by our very passionate kitchen team. Once again I am sorry that we did not live up to your expectations on this occasion. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Perfect weekend"

02/09/2018

We have just had three nights at this hotel and it has been a brilliant experience, the room is very clean and spacious and we were lucky enough to have a spa bath and a four poster bed . We ate in the restaurant one night and in the bar both meals were tasty and well cooked as is the extensive breakfast menu. The hotel is well situated to explore many places , we went to Gloucester, Bristol and Weston Super Mare.

"Hotel restaurant break"

3
27/08/2018

The restaurant table settings laid as if ready for breakfast no style. the manager took the order, served the order and cleared the plates. Didn't know what the soup being served was. poor selection of non spicy / tomato sauce. the Irish coffee didn't have any sugar. the cream was frozen with lumps.tried the crab linguine.the pasta was over cooked and the crab was playing hide and seek, and doing it very well.playing at nouveau cuisine and failing.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Roy H, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us however I am sorry to see that you encountered some issues. I can reassure you that I believe that the issues that you faced are totally isolated as we generally get excellent feedback from our customers however please do accept my sincere apologies for not living up to both our expectations on this occasion. I will be sharing your comments with the team and will be putting processes in place that will hopefully reduce the chance of these things happening again. We hope that you choose to use us again should you be in the area and give us the opportunity to show the real level of service that I know we can provide. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Absolutely excellent stay at this Hotel"

23/08/2018

Stopped overnight at this Hotel for a conference the following day, the Hotel and its staff were extremely helpful and could not be faulted in any way. The room was very comfortable with a great bed and facilities all of which worked. The food was brilliant and check-in and check-out great. All in all, I recommend this Hotel very highly.

"Good afternoon tea"

Visited for afternoon tea.,nice airy restaurant and good service The food itself was excellent ,range of sandwiches, four cakes and two scones with clotted cream per person, not for light eaters. The whole experience is too be recommended

"Great sausages"

28/07/2018

A really nice hotel, we were at a wedding at The Barn 5 minuted up the road so stayed overnight at this hotel. Checkin was easy, the room was clean and tidy, small but to be fair fine for one night. The only comment I do have was the plus points by the bedside were European plug points but found a spare plug by the dressing table to plug phone charger in!!!! The breakfast was good and I always think when a place invests in good sausages you're always on to a winner!!!! I would highly recommend this as a place for a stopover or a great place to stay for a few days to explore the area or even have a party or wedding. Just a really nice well run hotel.

"OVERNIGHT STOP"

Stopped here for one night on route to Somerset , excellent location, just off the M5 lovely large clean room, good evening meal served in bar area ,good choice of drinks and not to expensive, breakfast was also very good.

"Lovely weekend break"

15/07/2018

Stayed here for a weekend break in cotswolds bristol area. Easy access from motorway and easy to find. Hotel lovely. Clean , lovely staff especially Jess and tbe 2 young men in tbe bar. Loads of choice at breakfast nice bar area amd decent size towels! No air con but thoughtfully fan in the room.

"A Decent Transit Hotel"

4
10/07/2018

We stayed two nights, for a wedding nearby. It was the hottest weekend of the year so far and we definitely would have like air conditioning. The room and bathroom were well up to standard for a three star, as was the dinner. The breakfast was good, but it was very busy on the Sunday and unfortunately the friendly and willing staff didn't manage to keep the buffet stocked.

"Good overnight stop"

5
07/07/2018

Stopped overnight at The Gables on route to Cornwall. It is conveniently sited very close to Junction 14 on the M5. The bedroom was comfortable, clean and a reasonable size, dinner was fine and the breakfast was better than most buffet breakfasts we have had. The staff were welcoming and very polite. Other reviewers have said you can hear the traffic on the M5/A38. We stayed on a very hot night, slept withe the window open and didn't hear any noise at all. Would certainly stop there again.

"Good location and hotel"

4
01/07/2018

I have stayed at the Best Western Gables hotel now around 10 times. The hotel is in a good location just off the M5 Motorway. The rooms are of a good quality, cleaned daily and comfortable. The food at the hotel is also of a good quality, breakfast is usually self service, with a wide range of food. The evening meals are also of good quality service is fairly quick. All the staff are very helpful. Plenty of parking spaces available. Will be staying again.

"Very good value, close to M5"

29/06/2018

My wife & I stayed here en route to Cornwall. We had a lovely warm welcome on arrival. Our standard room was very comfortable & more than adequate. My wife noticed the establishment's food hygiene rating & we weren't going to eat here until I read the managers response to another review on here. Pleased we did eat dinner here as the food was fantastic and service very good too. Breakfast buffet was also excellent and I'd have no hesitation staying here again.

"Oh dear..."

1
22/06/2018

Intention was to have lunch. Advertised as dog friendly. Upon arrival the guy on reception didn't speak English, the word " lunch" meant nothing. Eventually a female appeared and said we could sit in the bar with our dog, who is impeccably behaved i must add. The bar person then told us we could only sit in the lower bar area. Ok. Fair enough. We then asked if we could order food from the restaurant menu. No. You can only order food from the restaurant menu in the restaurant. Ok... but we cant sit in the restaurant because we have our dog with us. Total nonsensical approach so we left. No wonder we were the only customers. The place was desserted. These people need to be taught how to conduct business in a professional and proper way. We would have probably spent up to £80 on food and drinks but clearly our custom was not appreciated. Avoid avoid.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Simon H, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience with us. I think it fair to make it clear that the process for bringing dogs into the hotel and importantly into the bar and restaurant were made clear at the reception desk, at the time we also advised about the restaurant and bar ordering process. We are 100% a pet friendly hotel and we are extremely proud of that fact however we like many other eating establishments do have rules surrounding where pets can be for food service. I totally understand your frustration with regards to not being able to order from the restaurant menu in the bar and this will be addressed with the relevant department heads and the process revised. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"A well located hotel for local attractions"

Excellent service with included buffet breakfast. Clean and well presented. Pleasant staff.Close to Slimbridge wetland wildlife centre which is well worth a visit. We are best Western reward members so we took advantage of sale price with included buffet breakfast.

"Great meeting point and sound lunch"

4
16/06/2018

I often use the Gables as a convenient place to meet on business being close to the M5 J14 both north and south. They have even changed and upgraded the lounge bar furniture so it is more 'sofa friendly'.My colleague and I also had a very good lunch of which his consisted of a trio of three huge sausages and mash with gravy (£10.50) and mine was a very generous sized ham eggs and chips (£11.50).All washed down with a pint of diet coke (£3.20) and a pint of lager shandy (£4.30). Good solid value, very filling and pleasantly served.Always a pleasure to return to this establishment.Did not stay in the hotel overnight.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear mncrbest, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit to us. I am pleased that you found the bar meals good value for money. We source all of our bar menu choices locally which enables us to have flexibility on prices. We hope to see you again on your next visit to the area. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Functional hotel with recently awarded (Mar 2018) 2/5 food standard rating"

2
13/06/2018

Stayed 1 night in a normal room, with double bed. The room itself was small (even compared to the likes of a budget IBIS or Travelodge). Furnishings were tired (frayed blind, chipped wood in open wardrobe area), tv remote not cleaned since purchased, and grime on tiles in bathroom. No main lights in room area, just lamps. Bed was ok and mattress firm. No air circulation, just window. Only 1 non occupied plug socket in the room! There was a brief powercut before midnight. Soundproofing was good between rooms, lots of road noise, but hotel is next to a motorway. WiFi was good. I had intended to eat dinner at the hotel but noticed on my way into reception that there was only 2/5 food standard rating for the hotel. Food standards website confirmed last check March 2018 and issues with food prep. That's just gross and made me think what else are the corners being skipped on. For that reason I also skipped the hot breakfast. In summary, a tired but functional hotel, but I wouldn't recommend eating there.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Ms2014a, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us. I am sorry to see that you felt our standards fell below your expectations. We are in the process of doing some soft furnishings within the bedrooms which will further enhance the customer experience with us. We did indeed have a visit from the Environmental Health as part of their routine check and on the day there was a very slight problem with a piece of equipment in the kitchen which was rectified immediately. Sadly were then unable to reapply for a visit until three months after the first visit. This has now being done and I confident that this will improve the score to a 5. We take food safety very seriously and can reassure you that no customers are or were ever at risk of harm. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Noisy"

31/05/2018

Reasonable hotel, I found sleeping a challenge due to the hotrls proximity to the main road which never seems to become quite, the menu choice is quite limited and the rooms are starting to show their age. I can't fault the resturant/bar staff and the cleaning team, they were very friendly and took pride in their work.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Chris T, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us however I am sorry that there were elements of your stay that fell below your expectations. For guests that are lighter sleepers we do suggest that they request rooms at the rear of the hotel which are typically quieter. We are in the process of changing our restaurant menu however we do have a wider range of dishes on the bar menu. Once again thank you for leaving a review and we hope to see you again soon. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Hot air balloon trip"

1
31/05/2018

We booked this hotel because it was only 3 miles from where the balloon flight was. Our flight was tomorrow morning an we got half way around the m25 when they cancelled the the flight due to the weather. We wanted to change the date for staying at the hotel but were not able to so we lost £80. We didn't want a refund just a different date so if anyone is booking a balloon trip think on

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear brianandmarg, Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback regarding your recent experience with us however I am sorry that it wasn't a positive one. We do have hotel policies regarding thee cancellation of bedrooms however I believe that on this occasion we could have handled your enquiry differently so please do accept my sincere apologies. Can I ask that you contact me directly on 01454 260502 or by email :- [email protected] so that we can rectify this issue for you. I look forward to hearing from you. "Sneaky Night away"

20/05/2018

A good nights stay apart from the rooms need either a fan or air con as it was unbearable with the summer heat window opening was restricted Restaurant menu very limited if you wont food have a bar meal as there's more choice , breakfast was Ok s

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear shaunwarren1, Thank you for leaving a review about your recent stay with us. As the weather does get warmer we do have a number of fans that we can provide to guests upon request from reception. We do have restrictors on the bedroom windows for health and safety reasons. We are in the process of changing out restaurant menu and have taken on-board your comments about the choices. We hope to see you again soon on your next visit to the area. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"One of the worst meals ever"

1
16/05/2018

We went with a Groupon deal. The waiting staff were clueless but pleasant. I had a vegetarian parcel as main course which was a pile of undercooked vegetables stacked inside filo pastry. The flavours had not intermingled and it was served with no veg or potatoes. These were extra. My husband had pork which he said was just OK although the fat hadn't been cooked properly. Wild horses wouldn't drag us back.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Rachel W, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience however I am sorry to read that your visit fell below both of our expectations. I am surprised about your comments regarding our food because this is an area that we pride ourselves on as we use locally produced products which are freshly prepared by our talented chefs. Please do accept my apologies that on this occasion we seem to have failed you. I would like to better understand where we went wrong. We currently do not have a vegetable parcel on our menu and so some more information would be appreciated so that I can ensure that we get things right for our future customers. I am certain that this is an isolated incident and it's a great shame that you would not visit us again for us to highlight how great our food and service can be. Once again thank you for your feedback and I will be sure to share your comments with the team. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Depends when you go"

3
12/05/2018

I stayed here two nights to visit Bristol and Bath over the bank holiday weekend. It was a ground floor four poster room, which was nice but a bit noisy from traffic outside and other guests passing by. The bed was really firm so uncomfortable and there were no extra pillows or blankets. However, the toiletries were good and it had a jacuzzi bath. The first morning we had breakfast in the main dining room and it was so nice, really good quality hot selection unlike many hotels, the staff were also really friendly the first night when checking in and at breakfast. The second morning breakfast was the complete opposite! It was moved to a conference room and it was terrible, cold food, dirty glasses, running out of bread etc. I told staff and passed the glass to them and they didn't care, no apology or anything. They also refused to let us sit where we wanted as there was no cutlery on the table then promptly made it up when the next guest wanted to sit there so that was a bit rude too. The hot drinks were poured rather than given in a pot that day and never topped up. It was just such a contrast, it was like a different place! We weren't asked on check out if everything was ok like at pretty much every other hotel or I would have mentioned the breakfast but it just seemed pointless as the Sunday staff seemed so disinterested. I would stay again as the hotel is convenient for visiting the area without paying the crazy prices in the surrounding towns but I wouldn't go for more than a couple of nights as the lack of sleep and a good breakfast the second day wasn't great.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear LB36, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us however I am sorry to read that there were elements of your stay that fell below our usual standards. When we have larger numbers of guests for breakfast we use a room that will enable us to better cope with the numbers due to the size restrictions that we have in our restaurant however it would appear that we have failed on this occassion so please do accept my sincere apologies. I will be sharing your comments with the rest of the management team and impletmenting necessary changes. Ivalue all customer feedback as this is a true reflection of how we are doing with service levels. I do hope that we get the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel and to show the 5* service that I know the team are more than capibale of delivering. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Rather disappointing "

3
06/05/2018

I went to the Gables for a retirement do with about 20 work friends. We had been given a private room which was nice. The table was laid in an odd way with huge gaps, so we had to rearrange it. There as no background music playing in the room. We had all preordered our meals. My starter was goats cheese tart, and that was nice, but no bread rolls. My main course was blade of beef was very disappointing, no additional vegetables and just no enough food. My dessert of lemon tart was ok. People were ordering chips to fill up. One poor persons main course came when everyone else had finished eating. My meal came to £29, it would have been nice to offer us all a cup of coffee of tea free of charge, the table was laid with cups. We were rather awkward and all paid separately . The assistant manager was taking the payments at the front desk and had the opportunity to ask how our evening had been - but no. I should had complained, but I had not organised, and the event was about our lovely colleague retiring.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Penny6666, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit to us however I am disappointed to read that your expectations were not met. We did indeed offer your party complimentary room hire and the room was set in accordance with the instructions given to us by the organiser. We do not play background music when we have been asked not to, however if on the evening this would have been requested we would most certainly provided this for you. The menu is very descriptive and therefore unless a dish is stated as being served with a bread roll then this isn't something that is provided, again however had this being requested we would have provided bread rolls for you. With regards to the payment we had again only followed the instructions that had been given to us by the organiser where it had been requested that you all pay individually. I am sorry if your expectations were not met on this occasion, however I do fell that the team had followed out the instructions as set out to us. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

we were staying for my nephews wedding at the barn at berkley the reception was great on arrival , our room was very nice comfortable and warm. The breakfast very good every thing nice and hot . the dinner i felt on our arrival was very overpriced for what it was my wife had fish was so small you had to look to see it i had the pork was not all that hot and quite a big peice of fat in the middle .i worked as a chef for over 50 years The bar staff were great

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Wiliam079, Thank you for leaving your review about your recent visit to us. I am sorry to read that you were underwhelmed by your dining experience with us. We have recently just changed both our bar and restaurant menus and so far have received positive feedback however please do accept my sincere apologies for not living up to your expectations on this occasion. I am please however to see that you were able to experience the excellent service that I know the team deliver on a consistent basis. "Travellers return "

29/04/2018

We occasionally reserve a table here on a Sunday lunchtime to break up our journey from The West Country. More often than not we go for the carvery which is always good and the accompanying vegetables are fresh and plentiful with a good variety of choice. Of course there's always the proverbial bottle of wine to enhance the tastebuds. Parking is excellent with plenty of spaces. Well situated for travellers just off the M5 motorway. Good accommodation if required.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear pugilistic, Thank for your continued custom and for making us your first choice on your journey north. We offer a fantastic Sunday Carvery option and this is very popular in the area. With over 100 spaces this really does make us a great stop off point when needing to break a journey on the M5. We very much look forward to your next visit to us. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Buy a gift disappointing!!"

27/04/2018

Friendly receptionist on arrival and room spacious, clean with plenty of coffee/tea etc.Had an evening meal in the hotel restaurant , ordered a rib eye steak, very disappointing could not eat half of it because of the grizzle on it prevented me doing so. At £23..00 it was very expensive for poor quality food, my wife had the chicken which needed more of the Madeira sauce as the mashed potato was quite dry not creamy! Ordered the sticky toffee pudding which was nice but again was over priced at £6.50. Food not recommended. Waitress in the restaurant was very good and friendly, her name was Jess. Breakfast selection was good and hot with pleasant service.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Bobswan, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent visit and stay with us however I am saddened to see that you left feeling disappointed with your dining experience. We have just recently changed our menu and have to date had nothing but great positive comments, however please do accept my sincere apologies for not providing the experience that we would both have hoped for. I do believe that our prices are competitively priced for the area however I will share your comments with the Head Chef and review when we change our menu next. Thank you once again for your feedback and I hope that we get the opportunity to welcome you again in the future. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"A fantastic four night stay"

5
20/04/2018

I staid here for 4 nights as was on a trading course near by. The staff were friendly and when I say the staff were friendly I mean everyone from the receptionist, bar staff, waiters, waitresses and cleaners each one made the effort all the time. The rooms were of adequate size and very comfy. We had breakfast every morning and again a nice choice and cooked well. The evening meal options are bar menu or bistro menu tried both over the 4 nights and the bistro food was first class I had the beaf feather and was lovely. Overall a great stay and would definitely come back here.

"Brilliant Overnight Stay"

5
10/04/2018

Our stay was just one night, large bedroom beautifully furnished with super king size bed. Would have liked free standing shower but bathroom was ok. Very nice full English breakfast buffet style ,only disappointment was the way the beans & mushrooms were kept hot under the hot plate in le creuset dishes with hot heavy lids. Friendly staff ,large secure car park & well appointed surroundings.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Merlin402016, Thank you for leaving a great review about your recent stay with us. I am pleased that you had an enjoyable time. We are always looking at ways in which to improve on what I think is already and excellent hotel with great facilities and I will draw upon your comments to share with the team for improvements. We hope to welcome you back to the hotel again soon. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"1 overnight stay "

10/04/2018

We travelled as a group of four with my brother and his fiancé. The hotel location was perfect for our trip to Berkeley Castle the next day. The rooms for traditionally decorated and very clean. Our room was a good size with tea and coffee facilities. We didn't originally booked to have breakfast at the hotel, but being pregnant and craving cereal the breakfast staff were extremely accommodating. They allowed me to just pay for a couple of bowls of cereal at £2 before checking out. The bar area offers a relaxed atmosphere for a couple of evening drinks before going to bed. Front of house and bar staff were all very professional.

"Lovely hotel"

4
05/04/2018

The hotel is lovely overall the service was good. The room was clean and tidy. The breakfast however was terrible, it was suppose to be a hot buffet, but was cold and hard. The staff at breakfast took our full plates and did not ask nor was interested as to why we had not eaten hardly anything. Told reception and nothing happened.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Lisastar21, Thank you for your review about your recent stay with us howver I am sorry that you encountered an issue whilst staying with us. I am extremeley surprised that our breakfast fell below the very high standards that is usually produced so please do accept my sincere apologies. We pride ourselves on our excllent breakfast where everything that can be locally sourced is. I will certainly share your comments with the team and look at making the necessary improvements. Thanks are again in order to Natalie & Charlotte, for organising our favourite room (408). The staff at the Gables always make us feel welcome & go out of their way to accommodate our requests. The room was clean, well presented well stocked. We had drinks from the bar, which were reasonably priced. We enjoyed a good breakfast, which we find never disappoints. We will stay again every time we visit the area, providing we can get a room.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear J_LWigan, Thank you for such a wonderful review and of course for being loyal customers to us. We have a fantastic team and they are all so very passionate about the service that they deliver and I am pleased that this is consistant on every visit. We look forward to seeing you again and getting you booked into room 408. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

We stayed here for 1 night while visiting the area & we were not disappointed. We had a problem with our on-line booking but when we arrived the lady on reception was very helpful. The room was very spacious & clean& there was plenty of teas, coffees & biscuits provided. Our room was at the side of a very busy road but the traffic noise did not disturb us at all. Breakfast was delicious & freshly cooked with plenty of choice, I would highly recommend the sausages, as they were the best I have tasted. I would certainly stay here again if I was in the area.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear N10yorkshire, Thank you for such a great review. It is always pleasing to get such positive feedback from our guests. I am sorry that there was an issue with your booking however very pleased that our reception team were able to rectify this issue for your quickly and professionally. Our sausages are exceptional even if I say so myself. They are extremely local to us an travel all of 5 miles to the hotel highlighting the fact that we use locally produced products. We do hope to see you again soon on your next visit to the area. Regards Anthony General Manager

Stayed over one night as I had a meeting in Bristol the next day. Its a nice hotel and the room was pretty comfortable. I had a meal in the bar similar menu to the main dining area. The meals were very exspensive and the portions were very small. Dont mind exspensive as long as you get value for money but uthis wasnt the case. A pint of diet coke was nearly £4 which again overpriced. The temperature adjuster on the shower in the bathroom didnt work and it was scalding hot !! needless to say I had a body wash in the sink. On check out the printer wasnt working so they said they would mail a reciept needless to say Im still wating.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review

I have just finished spending 10 weeks (mon-fri) at this hotel and I felt I should drop a little review. Anthony and his team went out of their way to ensure my stay was comfortable, enjoyable and provided as little stress as possible. The hotel is as you'd expect from a Best Western and it is that familiarity that drew me in to book in the first place. Nothing was too much trouble for anyone and I must say I didn't have one dull moment. The rooms were spacious and above all clean; always felt refreshed. The food was on the whole pretty good; although due to the length of my stay I was constantly out and about. The bar was well stocked and the staff knowledgable and friendly. Well done Anthony; I will be recommending your hotel to others wishing to stay in the area. Finally a special mention to Emma, Kate, Jason, Cal, Kieran and Diane for taking a shine to this guy and making my stay more than just a stay... Thanks once again!

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Neil P, Thank you for such a great review. It was our pleasure to have you stay with us and of course look after you. We wish you every success in your new career and we look forward to seeing you again when you visit the area. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

Had a lovely stay. Hotel and bedrooms were very clean. Impressed that bedrooms had clocks as not stayed in a hotel for a long time that had a clock you can see in the night. Good food and bar service. Excellent breakfast.

23/02/2018

Stayed for 1 night. Location handy for motorway however poor from a business overnight stay perspective. Was allocated a room at the front of the hotel - noise from road kept me awake. Also there was a heavy snorer in the next room - so very little sound proofing. Overall decor tired and dated. Staff were friendly and accommodating on arrival. However after highlighting the traffic noise on checkout the only comment was that if I came came then let them know to assign a room at the back. After traveling so far and needing a good nights sleep I would not take the risk on staying there again.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear CN125, Thank you for leaving a review about your stay however I am sorry to see that there were elements of your stay that fell below both of our expectations. I am sorry that the noise from the A38 was an issue for you. I have taken on-board your comments and will discuss them at the next managers meeting. We do have a number of rooms that are facing the rear of the hotel and whilst I understand that this doesn't help you and your recent stay, if you did decide to stay with us again we would be more than happy to assign you a room as far away from the main A38 as possible. We spent one night at The Gables so that we could visit Slimbridge Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust which isn't far away. Best Western hotels always deliver! It was warm and comfortable - the beds particularly comfortable so an excellent night's sleep. Lovely bathroom with plenty of room, and great to have a bath as well as a shower. We dined in the hotel, and they managed my special dietary needs without a qualm and we had a really lovely meal. Breakfast was equally good, and the same great service. All the staff we met were smilingly friendly and very helpful, and there's plenty of room in the car park.

"Adele Tribute Event"

10/02/2018

We had a really enjoyable evening, excellent 3 course meal and superb entertainment, the Adele Tribute Evening was second to none, Hayley as Adele was sensational and a first class entertainer, all made for a wonderful evening and when matched with a stay over was excellent value for money. Would we do it again? you bet!

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear John G, Thank you for such a great review. I am really pleased that you enjoyed the evening. The Adele tribute was the first time that we have tried this event at the hotel however given the great feedback from everyone that attended it certainly won't be the last. Do keep an eye out on our website for future events and for the next Adele night. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"A Lovely Room"

04/02/2018

We recently stayed at this hotel as part of an offer with groupon to visit Bristol zoo & stay at a ‘local hotel' but this hotel isn't particularly close to Bristol zoo. However, it is very closely located to the motorway, so I wasn't expecting it to be set in such lovely grounds! We also went to cribs causeway and the hotel wasn't far from this. I was really impressed with the room, it was a really good size along with the bathroom and the bed was comfy. The only issue we had was with the temperature, it was a cold couple of days and I'd turned the heating up all the way on the thermometer but it seems the heating is controlled centrally and had been recently turned off when we came back one day leaving the room quite cold. My boyfriend also had a shower and it was cold, so I'm not sure if this was linked to the heating. I'd recommend this hotel if you're happy to stay outside of Bristol centre and travel to where you want to go.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Fraserr_x, Thank you for choosing to stay with us recently. We do have a great location just off junction 14 of the M5 and on the A38. We are easy access into Bristol and Gloucester. I am sorry that you experienced some issues with the heating however and I will be sharing your comments with the team. Thank you for highlighting them to me. We hope that we get the opportunity to welcome you back to the hotel again soon. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

"Lovely overnight stay celebrating a 50th birthday "

04/02/2018

My husband and I were invited to a friends birthday celebration and opted to do an overnight stay which I believe was offered at a reduced rate for attendees. The party was great, buffet food excellent and our room although on the small side was absolutely fine, clean and comfortable. Breakfast was amazing all freshly cooked and also buffet style, staff were all really helpful and friendly my own very small niggle is that there was no proper fresh coffee on offer only instant I just cannot drink instant but on the whole would definitely stay here again and recommend to others.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear BristolGinge, Thank you for leaving a review about your recent stay with us. I do hope that you enjoyed the party. The team are all passionate about delievring great customer service and I am pleased that they have exceeded expectations on this occassion. I can confirm that we have just recently changed our coffee machines and supliers and hope that this will enhance the breakfast experience even further. We hope to see you again soon. "Dining Experience"

5
14/01/2018

We visit the restaurant on a regular basis and can only praise the staff and Managers for their professional attitude and excellent customer service. Kate Whitaker in particular totally understands what customer service means. She is very approachable, and friendly and ensures that everything runs smoothly. She is very hands-on and not only ensures that the team are working efficiently but gets stuck in to all the different tasks. We have just returned from lunch there today and having observed her, she circulated around the dining room talking to guests at each table and making each person feel valued. Callum is also a very experienced manager who is able to keep the dining room moving effectively and efficiently. He is also very approachable and professional. There was however an occasion last Sunday 7th January when neither Kate or Callum were in the dining room and it was total chaos. A Manager by the name of Jason appeared to be "in charge". But he was very ineffective. We were seated and then forgotten about. We had to get up and find a waiter to ask for a menu and drinks. He appeared not to be interested in whether we were served or not. Thank goodness today the A Team were back.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear 486margo, Thank you for such a wonderful review and for being a loyal customer in our restaurant. I am pleased that you always have an enjoyable visit to us. We thank you for your continued custome and we look forward to seeing you again on your next visit. Regards Anthony Greenidge Geeneral Manager

I had a great 2 night stay here the hotel was very, very nice. Warm and friendly staff so good big thank you Katie!!!! and Kieron. Lovely meals in the dining room and nice bar. Room very clean and comfortable (very large) Bath and shower excellent will be there again later in the year.

08/01/2018

We came to this hotel using Tesco vouchers. We stayed for three nights. It is in a very convenient position. We visited our favourite Cotswold towns and Swindon. The hotel staff were all very friendly. The room was good. The only thing which we weren't totally satisfied with was the breakfast - which wasn't as hot as it could have been and our shower which wasn't hot enough. We would recommend this hotel.

"Great food, uncontrolled bed!!"

03/01/2018

Arrived after 1am to a warm and friendly welcome from the night receptionist. Given a very pleasant average sized room, which was nicely decorated and spotlessly clean. 4 problems however, 1. the bedside lights do not work independently of the entrance light which meant having to get out of bed to switch off the lights. 2. The lighting in the room was generally not bright enough with the standard lamp being very dim. 3. There were no plugs near the bed for mobile phone/tablet chargers etc 4. When we sat up in bed to watch the TV the bed moved away from the wall depositing our pillows and then us into the gap! I had to wedge the castors to stop the bed moving!! Very comfortable bed though resulting in an excellent nights sleep. The breakfast was superb (on the Friday) ... good quality, very plentiful and a large choice ... juices, fruit, cereals, croissants, full fry-up, toaster, scrambled eggs ... the only negative was the weekend chef wasn't as good as the Mon to Fri chef ... he put pepper on nearly everything (including the mushrooms!!) and somehow ruined the hash browns. We stayed there on a winter promotion so the value for money was amazing (£89.50 for 2 nights B&B) The location so close to J14 of the M5 is brilliant. Provided you aren't paying more than about £60-£70 a night I would heartily recommend this hotel to anyone either on a stopover or if needing accommodation near Bristol.

"In need of modernisation "

02/01/2018

We stopped off in this resturant for lunch, it was not very busy . Only one member of staff who was friendly , the menu is in need of updating especially the starters . The main course fish and chips was well presented and very nice , the starter however was bread and oils which was basically oil in a dish, this was disappointing. The menu needs an overhaul the food was expensive for what we received.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Renata J, Thank you for reviewing your recent visit to us. I am pleased to say that we are currently working on our new menu which we hope to have live very soon. This will hopefully enchance the customer experience. Please do visit us again soon and try out the great new dishes that we have planned for both the bar menu and restaurant menu. We look forward to seeing you again soon. Regards Anthony General Manager

"Three nights B&B twixmas break."

4
29/12/2017

A very warm, friendly hotel. Every member of staff we encountered during our stay was welcoming. This is a lovely little hotel, close to M5 and the town of Thornbury where we were visiting our son and his family over Christmas. The rooms were clean and comfortable and breakfast was served buffet style. Our only complaint would be that the cooked items were not kept hot enough. There was plenty of choice of juices, cereals, yoghurts and pastries. The twixmas deal was very good value and we will be staying here again. Wi-fi was very good.

"Christmas party night ruined by drunken staff"

2
28/12/2017

We paid to attend a party night on 23rd December and the night got off to a great start with drinks and food and good service form the on duty staff. Then as the night wore on we found out that about half of the guests were staff and they were getting rather rowdy and loud and seemed to very drunk especially a young girl in a red gown and a man in a flowery jacket. We asked if the manager was present to complain about the behaviour and unacceptableness of staff attending a customer party night. We were informed that the general manager was sat on a table with the staff !!!!!!!!! There was also a raffle and it was clearly fixed as a member of staff won the prize!!!!! Now if this is the level of professionalism that this person allows at his hotel and from his staff I am surprised they have any customers left and we and our fellow paying customers will definitely not be returning to what was a good night spoilt by drunken staff. If the owners of this hotel read trip advisor then you should really think about how these staff and the manager are allowed to go to customer party nights and behave in such a manner , whilst the real guests are there for their annual Christmas parties.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear andyj0nes1979, Thank you for taking the time to review your experience with us, however I am very sorry to read that you felt that the professionalism of the hotel was comprimised. I can absolutely assure you that we as a team and hotel work extremely hard to ensuring that we maintain a high level of customer service and professionalism at all times. You are correct that I was there on the evening hosting a table which had customers that were staying in the hotel for the whole Christmas period however that was only for the meal service. The staff that were present were all there on days off and had paid for their spaces to enjoy the evening with their families, partners and friends. I can say 100 percent that I act with integrity and would not allow and competition that would take place at the hotel to be fixed in any way shape or form. If you would like to discuss this further with me then I invite you to contact me directly at the hotel on 01454 260502 or by email: [email protected] Regards Anthony General Manager

"Nice hotel. But needs some love and care"

3
24/12/2017

We went to a Christmas party night at this hotel and l have to say that for the money we paid I feel that it could of been better. The hotel itself looks tired and dated and the bar prices seem rather high especially when mixed with the price of the party night ticket. We arrived and went to the bar area which was clearly understaffed and the poor barman looked liked like he had had enough and. When we ordered drinks he was very polite and professional and apologized for the wait and we said it's fine as we work in the pub trade and during a the night in a different room the same barman was working that bar and I wish to thank him for pleasant service and is a credit to the hotel when other staff were just stood around chatting.. I think his name badge said Kieran. As for the food it was really tasty and well cooked and a nice twist by the chefs to not do sliced turkey but a nicely wrapped stuffed piece. We could not fault it one bit. BUT ...... her it comes the BUT! The service was appalling and the young blondish manager lady who served us the wrong food items was not even apologetic when we mentioned it to her but instead blamed the kitchen staff for the mess up ! We laughed as how is it the kitchens fault she has served us the wrong food? This comedy of errors from the servers continued throughout the meal. We ordered drinks and paid for them but they never arrived and we spoke to the manager a young man called Callum and he said that they had been served to another table and his attitude was dispicable and very unapologetic. He made us go and reorder from the bar our drinks instead of fetching them to us. Which we found odd and his overall demeanor towards us was not very hospitable or professional. As we work in this trade we watched him throughout the rest of evening and he seemed to be out of his depth and very inexperienced in his role with the way he treated guests and staff. This kind of approach to how paying guests are treated put a bit of a downer on an otherwise great evening of dining and dancing. It's a shame as I said the staff were great but the poor attitude of management left a sour taste with me on the night and the two on duty do not do the hotel owners any good justice what so ever. Would I return ...... for a meal yes as the restaurant we saw by the bar looked nice and the food was tasty and well cooked , but we would probably not return due to the attitude of the management.

"Lovely Hotel but Foods appalling!"

3
24/12/2017

Hotel is lovely but the food is appalling and such a shame. Ploughman's was a small piece of cheese and a slice of ham with a roll not much bigger than a profiterole and the Ribeye steak was literally a small steak with cherry tomatoes and a few chips which at £18 is well overpriced. Miller and carter do the works for the same price and specialises in steak. However the Christmas meal was terrible. Goats cheese and beetroot starter was tiny and the Turkey was rolled turkey with frozen veg clearly microwaved and soggy. Christmas pudding tasted and smelt of curry and was served with a lump of brandy butter ! What the hell ! So sad that the food is deemed acceptable as it is truly awful. My advise would be to stay in the hotel but eat elsewhere.

"Great venue but food .."

2
12/12/2017

We came here for the second year running for our annual dinner sailing dance. The venue is perfect the dance floor is small enough to make it have a great atmosphere But the food was horrible; We had pork on the menu sbixh was a cheap lump of fat with a vein of pork. The potato was a square brick. I had a barely cooked pepper with plastic cheese on. Last year the food was quite reasonable even allowing for catering for 65 This year is was truly awful and it was more expensive. The puddings were ok Very disappointing! What a great shame

This hotel is better than the star rating it currently has. Staff friendly, rooms very clean a well stocked bar, and even better still a great restaurant. This will be my third stay here, so it must be good. Credit where credit is due.

"Great night but smell of sewage overpowering "

4
10/12/2017

Had a great night on a Christmas party night, food and entertainment was very good as was our room but the reason I have only given 4 stars is the smell of the drains is awful and was quite overpowering especially in the bar and reception area and another guest complained that their room smelt of raw sewage as well!! Luckily our room didn't or the rating would have been a lot less. Please Best Western sort the drainage issues out as it ruined an otherwise great night.

The chef cooked a meal specially for my husband as it had been removed from the menu which he had requested. The food was delicious and well presented. The service from when we entered until we left was excellent. We had a wonderful evening. Great service from Emma and a special thank you to the chef.

21/11/2017

My wife & I have just enjoyed yet another great stay at the Gables. Thanks to Natalie & Charlotte for managing to secure our favourite room, 408. There has been a change of management and a number of new staff, but our stay was equally as good as previously good stays. We arrived late and made sure our room had been reserved, on arrival we ordered drinks & spent a little time relaxing before bed. Breakfast was as good as ever, setting us up for the day. We will return to this hotel many more times in the future.

"Meal in restaurant "

21/11/2017

What a change in this restaurant from last time the review i wrote on 12th jan 2017 was 5 ??. Im sorry to say this time was a 1 ?? at best the starter we ordered wasn't available which was fine but it took 15min after the order was placed to be told this, we ordered an alternative which was smoked salmon very enjoyable but no bread just salmon with a very small salad garnish. The waitress took our starter plates and asked if we would like dessert, to which I replied the main corse would be good first. Our main corse arrived it was lemon sole fillets with a garlic butter sauce which was more like lemon sole cooked in dirty fat with a greasy film. My husbands ribeye was cooked well but very grisly with a greasy mushroom and chips cooked in dirty fat. We were not offered any sauces to go with our meals. We brought our complaints to the attention of the waiter and asked for the bill the bill was a £2 supplement for my husbands steak as we had a pre paid Groupon voucher the waiter said he had spoken to the manager and she said there would be no bill to pay, Woop whoop £2 off a terrible meal, we would have preferred an apology from the manager.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Teresa B, Firstly I would like thank you for choosing to visit us again however I am sorry that we fell below both of our expectations. "relaxing 3 day stay"

09/11/2017

Stayed here for the first time for 3 nights. I was expecting it to be noisier than it was, near a major road. It was largely very peaceful. Some revellers at a Saturday night party were a bit unreasonable in the early hours, but that is largely beyond hotel's control. Our room was clean and tidy, a good size, and room service was also good. Had one evening meal, as we were invited out the other 2 evenings. Good quality and they know about gluten free, so I had a reasonable choice with each course.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear 500nige, Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us. I am really pleased that we lived up to your expectations. We have yet to stay at this very pleasant hotel, but the restaurant turned out to be first-class. Both my vegetarian wife and I greatly enjoyed our dinner here in their modern but elegant dining room; it really had a very comfortable ambience. Our evening was greatly enhanced by the excellent service provided by our delightful and personable waiter Morgan, who was helpful, informative and truly attentive without being obtrusive. All in all an excellent evening. So much so that we have booked to attend their Boxing Day lunch and stay at the hotel that night - with our greyhound Jilly. Their reception staff were also immensely helpful when I 'phoned to make the booking

Room 301, Unclean. Apple pips and debris on the floor. There was no heating on our 1st night or any offer of help. There was a pre wedding dinner arranged for Friday 13th at your hotel and the person organising the dinner sent out the set menu for this dinner, the menu listed the Gluten free courses available as there were 2 ladies who are Coeliac my wife being one of them. The dessert was topped with normal sweet biscuits (not Gluten Free) it took four requests from the chef before it was admitted they were not Gluten free biscuit's that had been used. This would have resulted in triggering the illness which can last from 4 weeks and longer. When approached the general manager was not interested or acknowledge there had been a health risk to his two guests.

Dear Holly1944, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review about your recent stay with us. I am sorry to see that you had some issues during your stay. We have an excellent team here at The Gables hotel and we are on-hand 24 hours a day to resolve guest issues should they arise. We were unable to offer a solution to the heating problem that you had as we were not given the opportunity to until the following morning. We called our Maitenance Manager as soon as we had been advised about the issue and he arrived at the hotel promptly. We have already spoken at length about the issues encountered and an agreeable level of compensation accepted. I take all cutomer feedback and complaints very seriously and I think that I had given your complaint my full attention. I am sorry to read these comments on TripAdvisor as I thought that the matter was resolved to your liking. Once again I am sorry for the issues that you encountered during your stay. What a surprise! With supplies for a Coeliac with lactose intolerance in the car boot we arrived on Friday evening. The staff were brilliant and made us feel very welcome and advised that, although we had brought supplies, they could offer gluten free bread, cereal and lactose free milk. We ate in the restaurant on the first evening and was very pleasantly surprised to find a comprehensive menu that included gf vegetarian food that I could eat. the most divine Halloumi and aubergine burger on a gluten free roll with fluffy crispy chips and salad. Heaven. Breakfast consisted of a cooked option - eggs, tomatoes and baked beans with gf bread, gf cereal, fresh and dried fruits and yogurts. All at a VERY good price. Excellent value - cannot say how impressed we all were with our first stay. The only downside was the wedding being held on the Friday - noisy until 1.00 am - butt I'd choose this venue because of its ambience and quality!

"One night stay"

We stayed here for one night in October 2017. The hotel is easy to locate and has a big car park. The reception staff were friendly on arrival and check in was quick. The room was clean and had everything we needed, however it was a little dark as the main light in the bedroom part of the room was two not very bright lamps. We arrived at about 8pm so decided to get room service which was nice but we felt the menu was quite limited. Breakfast was really nice and being self service you can help yourself to full English breakfast or pastries, cereal, fruit etc and there were also a selection of juices and hot drinks. The lady overseeing the breakfast was friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend staying here if you are in the area.

Anthony G, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear fifi985, Thank you for choosing to stay with us recently and taking the time to review your stay. I am sorry that you had issues with the room not being bright enough. "Elvis tribute overnight stay"

30/09/2017

Stayed overnight in 2 rooms supporting 3 elderly service users/wheelchair users whom have learning disabilities. Both rooms had twin beds, one having a zed bed as 3rd bed. The rooms are quite small but saying this we were able to accommodate the ladies well. I stayed in the 3 bedded room and managed well with 2 wheelchairs and a stand aid. There is only 1 designated official accessible bedroom which was no longer available therefore the bath/shower was not accessible for their use but the toilet facilities were. The rooms were located on the ground floor as the hotel does not have a lift. The rooms were clean, beds comfortable. Tea/coffee making facilities, hairdryer, tv, desk with chair, armchair, plenty of hanging space and information booklet in rooms. Plenty of activity/places to visit literature in foyer. The tribute act we were there to see was Elvis. The meal beforehand was of good quality, although the vegetables were of very limited choice and at times the service was a little slow. The tribute act was brilliant, the ladies thoroughly enjoyed themselves. 'Elvis' stopped to have a photo taken with one of the ladies even giving her one of his trademark scarves. The lady in question was over the moon at this gesture, she was still wearing the scarf at breakfast. The attention Elvis gave her made her very happy. The Elvis impersonator had a really good Elvis style voice and encouraged everyone to join in. The breakfast was a buffet help yourself style with tea/coffee served at the table. The breakfast was of good quality with a wide selection of hot/cold food available. Tables are situated with plenty of room. We were able to sit at a table which had plenty of space to accommodate 3 wheelchairs and 2 staff seated. We were welcomed and assisted by all the staff on duty throughout our stay. The ladies are already looking forward to a return overnight visit as well as being booked in for an afternoon Christmas tea.

If you are visiting Cotswolds and Gloucester area or even crossing the bridge into Wales this hotel is a great location, nice staff ,nice rooms and most important for us dog friendly, Great gesture on arrival as our dog had a bed and biscuit shaped bones with bowl provided by the hotel Great touch well done More hotels need to take note . Breakfast is fantastic buffet style with again nice friendly staff ,we did not eat in during the evening so I can't comment on evening meal but go by breakfast must be a ok Nice clean room and hotel - we will be back

"Great wedding venue"

5
11/09/2017

We stayed for a night on Saturday the 9th September to attend friends wedding . The wedding was brilliant the venue looked gorgeous and staff ensured all went smoothly. The food was a good standard hot and plentiful and staff worked hard to ensure we were well catered for . Our room had all the usual essentials and was very clean and the hotel allowed us to check in early so we were able to shower and change into our wedding outfits - very obliging . Drinks at the bar were usual hotel prices and there were plenty of staff so no long queues. All in all hotel was excellent value and provided a lovely wedding venue that we were lucky enough to attend.

06/09/2017

Hadn't planned on stopping here but getting a bit late and Gables is known to me. Usually when we're here it's for Sunday lunch on the homeward run. Last visit was disappointing although to be fair all previous were good. We dined in the lounge bar area with a nice bottle of wine with scampi and chips of the specials board and coffees to follow. It was a whistle stop meal but it was very enjoyable and hit the spot to continue with our journey. Staff were very pleasant with excellent service. Good parking here which always pleases me. Top marks to the Gables from a satisfied customer. You have redeemed yourself.

05/09/2017

I stayed at this hotel last week with my husband for 3 nights. The first comment is about the staff. Each and every one are really great. When I made my booking over phone I spoke to Charlotte. She was busy and said she would call back. Within 10 minutes she did and was very helpful. Also after a week I noticed I had made a mistake and booked the wrong date as we wanted to be away for our wedding anniversary. I telephoned again and was told they would return the call. After 15 minutes I had a call and the dates was changed. I thought how professional this was. We was happy with our room, I do agree with another comment about the lighting, and in the bathroom my husband found it too dark to shave. This is a very small problem. Our problem unfortunately was in the restaurant on the Tuesday and Thursday. On the Wednesday we had a lovely meal. In the price we paid for the room it included breakfast and evening meal. I will add at this point it was a very reasonable price. When we went in to breakfast on the Wednesday we did tell Diane our problems of the night before . We had booked a table for 12 people on the Wednesday night as friends that live local was joining us. We was very happy that night, all the food arrived together and all the meals was good. On the Thursday night we sat in the bar for our meal as we found the restaurant was very quiet and lacked atmosphere and it was our anniversary. We was not happy with the meal again. The chef did go to the trouble of making a special dessert for us to wish us an happy anniversary, which was very nice. It would be a good idea to keep espresso cups handy too, we asked for espresso each evening and it was served in large coffee cups. When we asked for the small cups staff kindly went out in to the shed to get them for us each night. Rather strange. We will come back to the Gables as regardless of these comments we did enjoy our stay and hopefully the meals would be better and by then the specials would be different too as they was the same "specials" for the 3 night stay. I would like to give a mention about Diane and Kate (supervisors) they was absolutely great and very professional. A real credit to your hotel.

02/09/2017

Good value, a warm welcome, peaceful and helpful. Our bathroom left much to be desired but it was our own fault not reporting it to reception at the beginning of our two night stay. The lighting was so dark that we were unable to read at night.. It was saving the planet but not my eyes.

"Very good stop off on M5"

4
01/09/2017

We used The Gables as a stop off on a trip to Manchester from the south coast. It proved an excellent choice, just minutes from the M5 and just off the A38. It had a rural feel to it and seemed to be surrounded by fields. The staff were all very welcoming and accomodating. Everything looked clean and well-maintained - I wouldn't hesitate to stop there again. We had a pleasant meal in the restataurant; there was one hiccup with a dessert but it was dealt with promptly and efficiently so no complaints there. Excellent breakfast which was included in the price.

Popped in here for lunch on way to Bristol, very quiet hotel at lunchtime but thought we would give it a try, staff very friendly and menu was good, not a lot of choice but it all sounded good. we ordered and the food arrived very quickly, all done fresh and exactly as we expected, good sized portions and all cooked really well, reasonable price and we all felt we has had a nice lunch, no issues at all

"Convenient Location"

4
04/08/2017

We needed somewhere to sleep between visiting family in Thornbury and heading down the M5. So this location was just right, being a few minutes from the motorway and ten minutes from Thornbury. The room was clean and comfortable and there wasn't too much traffic noise from the A38 nearby. No noise from other guests. So a good night's sleep. The included breakfast was tasty and served quickly and efficiently.

"A lovely two-night stay"

02/08/2017

We had a double room on the first floor, at the back of the hotel. There was some slight noise from the car park below, but not enough to disturb us. The check-in process was quick and easy. The room was very nice and was clean and tidy. The bed was comfortable. We had an evening meal after we arrived, as we were celebrating my birthday, and can honestly say that the food was superb as was the service. I had a delicious steak followed by biscuits and cheese, and my wife had a halloumi and aubergine burger followed by a passion fruit cheesecake (which smelt fantastic). The evening meal and both breakfasts were included in the deal I had, so cannot comment on the price. Breakfast was also very tasty and there was plenty of choice. The wifi service was good. The location of the hotel is excellent, being on the A38 and just a few minutes' drive from Junction 14 of the M5. We visited WWT Slimbridge, and this was only 15 minutes' drive from the hotel.

"pleasant enough hotel"

31/07/2017

We chose this hotel on a Best Western offer so cannot complain about the bed and breakfast rate. We upgraded to a best room and generally were happy with that, clean and noise free. We ate in the restaurant on the first night and thought the menu was a little limited and the food not exceptional, though well-cooked. Breakfast buffet was indeed good with plenty of cold choices, too. Pleasant staff in all areas and the curry night was good so all in all, not bad!

, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear jamesgandolfini, Thank you for your review about your recent stay with us. I am sorry that you found our new menu to be limited however I will share these comments with the Head Chef and look to make some improvements. 29/07/2017

I've stayed here many times and in general it's quite good. This trip I arrived late so I didn't eat in the restaurant. The room was a good size with a large comfortable bed. The bathroom would benefit from a refit but it served its purpose. The Breakfast is a buffet breakfast with a good selection to choose from. Friendly staff too

"Great place to stay "

26/07/2017

Great place for family and friends. We stayed several nights here and made this our hub to go to nearby villages and attractions. The staff were friendly and welcoming. The room was small but comfortable. We had a rear room. Delivery trucks and car that are parking made for some noisy times. But nothing much that we could complain about. The bar and restaurant are very nice. Our breakfast didn't come with the price of the room so we paid the extra and had a very nice buffet. I would stay again given the chance.

"GABLES HOTEL"

26/07/2017

Poor value room (small and outdated). TV poorly positioned. Windows do not open very fully and no air con. Very little in the way of additional facilities e.g. no mini-bar, no in-room safe. Overall, we would rate this stay as poor £ value for money, since we booked months in advance. But Chef Gary cooks a good breakfast and the hotel staff in all areas were generally friendly and professional. Free ample car parking is helpful. Hotel is easily found on the A38 and has good access to motorway M5 for Gloucester, Cheltenham, Bristol and other surrounding attractions e.g. Wetlands Centre at Slimbridge. There are limited hotels in the area.

23/07/2017

We stayed here one evening for a wedding, the room was small did not smell fresh, but was ok for one night! But the breakfast cooked by the chief Gary was great, it made our stay worth while. The rooms were very dated and the bathroom fan was so noisy.

Pleasant room, although there was some traffic noise but we had been warned of this and it wasn't too obtrusive. "Average but beware VERY soft beds"

3
09/07/2017

Average on all fronts, nothing awful but nothing that makes you think you'd want to rush back here. Breakfast and evening meals were ok and ok value but not top of the heap in comparison to other Best Western hotels. Room was decent, clean and tidy, carpet could have done with a hoover but nothing horrendous.

, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear JohnR833, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay with us however I am sorry to see that you felt the hotel fell below the standards of other Best Western properties that you have stayed in. "Modern and clean. Only 2 minutes from the M5 but no road noise."

4
26/06/2017

I would describe our room as basic but the décor was in good condition and it was very clean. The double bed was perhaps a little on the small side compared with the king or queen size beds found in rival hotel chains. The over the bath shower had good pressure even in our upstairs room. Shower gel and the hand gel by the his and hers sinks were dispensed from pump machines fixed to the wall. One annoying feature was that the toilet seat would not stay in the upright position and therefore had to be held up during use, which is one of my personal pet hates. The room was equipped with a wall mounted colour television with a remote control that had plenty of Freeview channels and I'm pleased to say teletext service. There did not appear to be the selection of international channels that you would expect in international hotels. There were also tea and coffee making facilities and a hair dryer. Considering that it was a double room it was disappointing that there was only one chair. There was a stool at the dressing table but this would not suffice for long time sitting. The corridors had thick carpeting and signs requesting guests to respect the peace of other guests. During our two night stay we were not disturbed whatsoever. The hotel rooms are on two levels and the lack of a lift could prove a difficulty for the less able. Breakfast consisted of a good choice of cereal, fruit, yoghurt, cold meat and hot breakfast items, bread and pastries. On the first morning the bacon was very lean but overcooked and therefore crisp and dry. On the second morning the bacon was cooked to perfection. For me the thick sausages were the star of the show. Whilst black pudding was listed on the breakfast menu it was not included in the buffet. On the first morning, despite arriving early for breakfast, there was only one croissant left and on the second day we arrived half way through the breakfast time and there were no pastries left at all. The staff explained that they had been busier than usual because a coach party had been in residence. However the hotel would have been aware of the reservation and this should have been taken into account in the ordering of supplies. The hotel bar is well maintained and comfortable. A couple of English language newspapers were available for guests to read. The cost of beer, cider etc. at about £3.70 - £3.80 (dependent on selection) is not excessive. Food is served in both the restaurant and the bar but the menu and price is essentially the same. At around £12.50 for a main course this was on the expensive side and perhaps targeted at business residents able to claim expenses. Instead we ate at a local Sizzler establishment where a limited choice of two main courses could be purchase for a combined cost of £8.50. The car park had lots of space and we found no difficulty parking. The short distance from the M5 opened up great transport links and central Bristol was only an approximate 30 minute journey away. All the staff we met throughout our stay were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. I would be happy to stay at this hotel again and would recommend it to others. We very much enjoyed our stay which we booked via Groupon and which included admission tickets to the excellent Bristol zoo.

, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Keith J, Thank you for your very detailed review of your stay with us. It really does give me the opportunity to assess all areas of the hotel and how are performing. I am sorry that there were a lack of pastries upon your arrival into breakfast and I am sure that we would have been able to make some fresh for you which would have been no trouble at all. I do believe that our food and beverage offering is both extensive and affordable based on the fact that we locally source all of our meat and fish products and of course prepared by our fantastic kitchen team and served by our equally fantastic restaurant team. I am pleased that you will choose to stay with us again and we very much look forward to that. Regards Anthony Greenidge General Manager

Stayed there for a course i was on at a local quarry (scuba diving) - nice size clean rooms, very good food in the restaurant, massive breakfast. The bedrooms are really nice great location just outside of Bristol .. The food is good quality although very small portions for evening dinner. As a converse the breakfast is good self serve buffet .. staff are so friendly and cannot do enough for you. The staff who clean and tend the rooms do an amazing job ..! Would totally recommend if to stay two or three nights.

"Dissapointing Stay"

The best thing about the Hotel were the staff. The worst thing was the breakfast, which although comprised good quality food was always cold. Upon arrival the hotel looked tired on the outside and the rooms needed some TLC.

, General Manager at Best Western Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Ruperts474, Thank you for taking the time to leave a review about your recent stay with us however I am sorry that you only rated us a two. We are always looking at ways in which to improve our offering at the hotel. I am sorry that read that you found our usually exceptional breakfast to be lacking on this occasion and I value this feedback and will share this with the relevant department heads and rectify. Our Maintenance team work very hard at ensuring that the hotel is looked after to a high standard and again I will share these comments with them. I do hope that the positive experience that you mention with the staff is good enough reason for you to choose the Best Western Gables Hotel again when visiting the area. Regards Anthony

"Pleasant stay"

13/06/2017

Pleasant stay overall good value for money, no complaints and helped by a big room although we did have to remind the room next door to keep noise to minimum ( no issues after that). Location suited our needs and bar service adequate for a two night stay. Overall happy and would stay again

Dear MarkO6943MD, Thank you for your review of your recent stay with us, it really pleases me when we get such positive feedback from our customers. We are ideally located for many of the local attractions and literally a stones throw away from the M5 motorway. I agree that we are excellent value for money and we have some great themed restaurant nights and plenty more besides. We look forward to seeing you again at The Gables Hotel soon. Regards Anthony

Useful location hand to the M5. Plenty of parking space. Good base for getting into Bristol, Gloucester, Cheltenham & Gloucestershire airport. Adequate facilities without being fussy, pleasant helpful staff & comfortable room.

"Reasonable stay & convenient for WWT Slimbridge"

3
01/06/2017

We stopped at The Gables Hotel for a second time primarily because of it's convenience for visiting WWT Slimbridge the following day. As on our first visit the pluses include a large free car park, a friendly & efficient check-in and a good-sized room with tea & coffee making facilities, a good-sized bed and a powerful & hot over-the-bath shower. The wi-fi was free and worked well. Our room this time was on the ground floor at the back of the hotel and this meant that we experienced loud lorry noise just after 7am, presumably for deliveries. We were also disturbed by countless doors banging in the hotel corridor around this time so this combination effectively curtailed our good night's sleep which was disappointing. Should we stay again we will ask for an upper floor room at the front of the hotel to try to avoid the problem although I would suggest that the hotel itself could ban deliveries before 8am which might help. Breakfast was of a reasonable quality although the hot buffet was looking a little tired when we got to it. The breakfast staff, however, were excellent being both friendly and attentive which was appreciated. In summary, this remains a decent hotel, particularly convenient for WWT Slimbridge, and if you can get a good rate for your stay it is worth it. Just ask for a room away from the delivery area if you fancy a pre-breakfast lie-in!

"Nice hotel with very welcoming staff!"

21/05/2017

Me and my fiancé stayed for 2 nights as we were in the area to attend a friends wedding. The hotel itself was nice, with plenty of parking and had a nice bar area to meet for a drink (or a few :)) Our room was small and basic but very clean and had everything we needed for the 2 nights for 2 adults. The breakfast was lovely with a nice choice. The thing that made our stay that little bit extra special was the staff, from reception to the bar, restaurant and the cleaning staff, they were all very welcoming, always had a smile on their faces and were very attentive, and this pushes the hotel from average to having that little bit of extra sparkle!!!

"Conference venue, did not use accommodation"

3
20/05/2017

Had a two day conference here recently. I didn't stay at the hotel so can't comment on the rooms, although other delegates did say that the rooms were okay, a bit dusty, and hot and with a fair amount of road noise when they had the windows open. The conference facilities were reasonable, although there was noise from adjoining rooms and vehicles outside at times which make hearing the speakers a little difficult. The food was mostly reasonable, not amazing but not terrible. Was never hot, just warm....as was the tea and coffee. There's a large car park, and the outside seating is nice.

"Lovely staff"

20/05/2017

We stayed 3 nights in this hotel which is central for the M5, Bristol and surrounding area. The staff were so friendly and could not have been more helpful, polite and very well trained. The breakfasts were self service but very good with a great selection. We had dinner in the hotel one night which was very nice. The only down side was that the bathroom in our room was in desperate need of a refurbishment. Our room was at the front of the hotel but we did not have a problem with the traffic noise. The hotel itself was very clean as was our room.

"Friendly hotel"

4
12/05/2017

Stayed here for two nights. Which was present from my daughter. Lovely friendly hotel, we had a meal in the hotel the first night which was very good and tasty. Breakfast was great with a good variety to choose from and staff very attentive. Very central for visits to slim ridge where we spent a lovely afternoon. Would definitely stay again a good hotel for visiting the area.

"Really nice stay"

4
11/05/2017

We went as part of a group and stayed 2 nights. The place was clean and the staff friendly. The food we had for our group meal was really good and well presented. The only critique is the breakfast service, they run out of stuff, this happened both days. I think they should be prepared, it is'nt as if they don't know the numbers. I waited in excess of 5mins for bacon. The breakfast was nice with a good choice, I think they need 1 more in the kitchen.

"Dissapointing return visit"

3
08/05/2017

Have Sunday lunch here 5/6 times a year on journey homeward from Somerset. We return because the quality is usually very good. This is our first visit here this year and I can only think there must have been some changes. The restaurant staff were as pleasant and helpful as always. The choice of meat was beef,Pork or turkey. Normally I would choose the beef but it extremely rare or to be nearer the point raw with blood oozing all over the cutting block and beyond. I chose turkey which was nice. The choice of vegetables was poor compared to previously . The gravy was thin and weak. I ordered fruit cake and custard (a strange title I know) because the others didn't appeal to me. I joked I bet it's leftover Xmas Christmas cake . When it turned up that's exactly what it looked like complete with the icing and hard crystallised fruit. Decent choice of wine which was pleasantly enjoyed. We will probably look around again for an alternative place on this journey home.

"Very attentive and pleasant staff"

5
03/05/2017

We stayed for one night. Booking was efficient and staff were very welcoming. At dinner the waitress was really friendly and helpful especially since we have dietary requirements. The cook came round the restaurant to chat. There is a good range of beers and wines. The free wi-fi was simple to access.Breakfast was prompt and ingredients were fresh and tasty. The reception staff member was a trainee and during checkout we could see that the training was being delivered in a supportive way. It was obvious that staff training is a high priority and an important part of the way that this hotel looks after its guests. This hotel is really close to the M5 and would be a really good stopover. The facilities would also make a good short break.

"Not the Best West"

3
03/05/2017

Stayed at several Best Western hotels and find this one to be lacking by the standards of the others. Room adequate but in need of a freshen up, but there was a definite odour to the room and if pushed I would say it was urine. No remote for the tv, granted this was corrected when we asked at reception, but its these little things that lets the overall experience down. Evening meal on the first night showed no real finesse with fondant potatoes more like King Edward spuds. More of a problem was on our second night being told that we could not have an evening bar meal at 8:40pm as the chef had packed up for the night as it was bank holiday and he wanted to finish early. I say early because we were infored we could order a meal up to 9:30pm. Being a little unhappy at this the situation was eased by Katie who stepped in and got us a plate of curry, which was actually quite nice. Good wifi in rooms which is free as is the parking which is a plus. Overall disappointing and sadly would not return or recommend.

"Comfortable stay"

3
01/05/2017

A good value hotel right off the motorway junction so very easy to find, be sure to check multiple search engines as one we were advised no rooms left, another showed lots of options. Check in was easy and they helpfully offered us taxi numbers for the evening but a little disappointed that they didn't provide a Wi-Fi code without asking. The room was a decent size, clean and a comfortable bed. It was a bit too hot for us, so some traffic noise was heard early morning as we opened the windows. Slightly dodgy toilet flush and a whistling cold water tap were the only small niggles we found. The breakfast was self service, I liked the slick efficiencies of the staff to seat, bring hot drinks and remove used plates etc. The scrambled egg was fab, plus expect hash browns, sausages, bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms with options of pastries, cereals, fruit and yoghurt.

"Excellent weekend"

5
26/04/2017

My bride and I attended our wedding at the hotel over the weekend 21st to 23rd April, 2017 and enjoyed every second. The organisation of the wedding was excellent, the attention to detail, amazing but all this was surpassed by the staff. They were attentive, polite and nothing was too much trouble. Every single guest praised their service. The hotel event rooms were beautifully presented for the occasion of the ceremony, wedding breakfast and evening function. The food all weekend was excellent and well presented. The guest rooms especially the bridal suite were immaculate, clean and very comfortable. The outdoor seating was very good and welcoming especially in the sunshine. Within minutes of the sun making an appearance, the staff were out placing cushions and umbrellas making the whole patio/garden area very inviting. The hotel is within minutes of the M5 so is ideally situated to meet family and friends from either end of the country. All in all, an excellent weekend, one never to be forgotten and we will be back for those Sunday lunches etc. You don't need the excuse of a wedding!

"Easter Weekend Group Booking"

5
25/04/2017

Having enjoyed a stay here as a couple last autumn, we were confident to book again for a large group over the easter weekend. We were delighted by the efforts the staff had made to make our 3-night stay a success. All the arrangements were just perfect- friendly welcome, tasty meals with great choices for dinner and breakfast and they had even gone to the trouble of laying down a floor-covering in one of the conference rooms so we could store our bikes (about 30 of them) safely overnight. As others have said, it's the staff who make this hotel such a success and they did a great job for us; we had a lovely stay there.

"Wedding"

4
23/04/2017

We attended 21-23/4/17 for a wedding. Over two nights, from start to finish the staff were incredible and I hope the company realise and recognise that the staff at this place are an absolute credit to them! Friendly, polite, attentive, efficient, organised and expedient, nothing was too much as they went out of their way to accommodate every requirement. The food and service was spot on throughout and it does have a really nice relaxed atmosphere. If I were to have any critique at all (and this really is nit picking) I would say the amenities and decor are a little tired and could possibly do with some investment to spruce things up a touch however this is only superficial. With that said our room was very clean and comfortable and along with free wifi and parking what more could you ask. I would have no compunction in recommending the hotel if you're on a business trip, short break or live in the area and need somewhere to hold a family or business function. Thanks again to all the staff who worked over the weekend and helped to make the occasion run as smooth as possible.

"Amazing weekend!"

5
23/04/2017

We attended a wedding held at the hotel and stayed over 2 nights, I can only state that everything was exceptional, the atmosphere was lovely, outside seating area was great despite being on a major road, the staff were first class, nothing was too much, we had breakfast and dinner, the food was glorious, if I had to find fault it was that our room needed a bit of TLC, other than that I would stay again and recommend it to others. Also excellent location just off the M5.

"missing the finer details"

3
22/04/2017

Booked through groupon on a deal and was great value. On first impression the hotel was good with lots of free parking, the rooms all have contactless key cards meaning you don;t have to faff with inserting the card in and out etc. The shower head had 3 different settings which was lovely and the taps had gold rims- lovely smart touch. The breakfast had lots of choice and help yourself so you could really start the day well. We had breakfast included but upon closer inspection if you don;t get it with your room its £10 person. So why only 3 point rating...... The receptionist didn't give much information at checkin such as where the bar/restaurant was, the times of meals or the wifi code. The bed was on wheels and moved away from the wall when sitting up in bed watching tele. Our towels weren't changed, which I understand some places don't do, but they usually explain this, anyway they were still damp when we returned from our day trip so i requested more and although they were provided I was questioned and had to justify myself. They provide on the wall dispenser 2 in 1 body wash and shampoo- it was quite a masculine smell which I wasn't keen on. The service at breakfast as in clearing plates or topping up hot drinks could have been better as this was a bit slow. The room was comfortable, breakfast substantial, nice bathroom with good shower.

"Group of 34 cyclists at Easter, fantastic staff"

5
18/04/2017

We were a group of around 34 cyclists for 3 nights over Easter, and we were really impressed with the ambience of this hotel. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly. We were staying on a half board basis with a 3 course meal each evening, which was excellent value and beautifully cooked. Some hotels just seem like home from home, and this one certainly does. A big thanks to all the staff again.

"ok for a few days"

3
16/04/2017

we requested a room at the back of the hotel which was arranged without any problem. we ate in the restaurant on one night of our three night stay. the food was fine but, the room needs a bit of a lift. there is a good choice of food for breakfast. the hotel is within easy reach of several tourist sites and the cities of Bristol and Bath. however we were a bit surprised that the information packs provided at the reception area concentrated on Bath and not Bristol, seeing as Bristol is much closer. special mention to Katie who is a star here.

"George Michael tribute and overnight stay"

5
09/04/2017

Easy check in. All the staff were very naturally friendly, helpful and welcoming. We were fortunate with the weather so sat outside most of the afternoon. Although on a busy road, the hedges disguise it. We had a sandwich early on, and the set menu in the evening for the entertainment, all the food was really good. The George Michael tribute was amazing!! Fantastic atmosphere and this overspilled even at breakfast the next morning with everyone still in great spirits. The chap who is perhaps a manager was hilarious, making everyone laugh and trying to convince us he was the tribute act, its easy to see why everyone seemed happy working there. We had a great time and will be looking forward to going again to this type of event as this was our first visit. We had 2 rooms, both clean and tidy. It was a social visit meeting up with family from the North, who would travel and stay again. Well done Gables.

"Overnight stay"

3
07/04/2017

Stayed overnight on business, good location near M5. Staff helpful but gave the impression that they were not very experienced or confident. Room clean and comfortable if a bit on the small side. Restaurant lacked atmosphere but food was reasonabley priced and well cooked. Would stay again if passing but probably wouldn't stay more than one or two nights, not much to do.

"The Gables"

06/03/2017

Spent the weekend at this hotel. The rooms were clean and tidy and warm. The staff were really helpful nothing too much trouble. Had a bar meal on Friday night just a sandwich but the bread was fresh the filling tasty and the chips done to perfection. Good prices too. The breakfast was very good. Although our room was facing the busy A38 hardly heard the traffic. The bed was soft but firm and we had a good nights sleep. Would stay here again.

"Michael Buble Tribute night and overnight stay."

3
26/02/2017

Thorougly enjoyed the entertainment ....unfortunately not impressed with the food as for one a lady on the same table showed me an email of what was to eat as I did not receive one therefore did not know what we were going to be eating.....communication needs to be upped one feels......The food wasnt spectacular in my opinion as the pork fillet was overcooked and rather chewy and the vegetables must have just been dipped in hot water as very 'al dente'...........The beer was unavailable in the function room so therefore had to trot through to the bar area every time we needed a drink. Enjoyed the company of others on the table and the entertainment was really good. Rooms were comfy enough but I cannot say that having a mirror on the back of the bathroom door is my cup of tea as whilst you are on the toilet don't really enjoy the 'mirror image'......staff were very nice and breakfast was okay.

Marc P, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you very much for taking the time to post a review regarding your experience of our Michael Buble tribute night. I was very happy to hear that you thoroughly enjoyed the entertainment as due his success we have invited him back later in the year. Regarding the food I am sorry you felt service and communication was not what you expected. I have spoken to my team and they have assured me that everyone attending was sent an email stating their menu choices, that being said I have fed back your comments around the food quality to my Chef. I do appreciate your feedback and have taken your comments on board for our future events, if you wish to speak to me further about this please do not hesitate to contact me on [email protected] Thank you once again and I do hope to see you at the hotel again soon

"Cheap & Cheerful Stopover"

4
23/11/2016

Located just a stones throw off the M5 at Jct 14, this is ideal for breaking a journey. The rooms are on the small side, but do the job and staff are pleasant & helpful. Breakfast is very good with loads of choices but be careful what you pick for evening meal. Probably best to stick with something the chef/cook can't ruin!! Also beware morning traffic noise at the front if you are a light sleeper.

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks Sheila for posting a review of your recent stay. I was pleased to here that our staff looked after you during your visit, and that you enjoyed our extensive breakfast range. We look forward to welcoming you back to The Gables in the very near future.

"Great Staff"

5
23/11/2016

We have stayed before but booked one of the larger rooms this time. Super friendly receptionist, quick check in and very clean room. What stood out was that the staff seemed happy to work here and were naturally pleasant, none of the 'have a nice day' crap that passes for service now. We stayed for two separate nights on the way to Leek and Nottingham and back. Hotel is close to the M5 on the A38. First class buffet breakfast in on the rate. We have stayed in about 180 Best Westerns, mainly in USA and Canada and think the staff here are the best we have met. Looking forward to next stay.

Thank you Tim for your fabulous 5 star review of your recent visit to The Gables. We look forward to welcoming you back for your next visit in the area. Thank you once again for taking the time to post a review.

"Terrible Sunday dinner "

2
22/11/2016

We booked dinner for 1.45 this Sunday for 4 people, on arrival staff were friendly and accommodating, we were escorted to our table, but it wasn't ready, so we went back to the bar area and waited. Only one had starters and to be honest it was nice, but when we went up to get dinner, there was very little meat left, and only cauliflower cheese, no parsnips, not much broccoli and no carrots, Luke warm gravy and the roast potatoes must have been there hours along with very soggy Yorkshire puddings. We all had dessert are we were still hungry, the Eton mess had no meringues if so very little. The chocolate brownie was very nice tho very small. Very disappointed for over £75.00

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
We would like to apologise profusely that you did not enjoy your Sunday lunch recently. These are not the standards that we wish to give our guests so please contact our General Manager here at The Gables, he would like to discuss this matter with you more in depth. Kind regards

Had a short stay here, but the staff were fantastic, very welcoming and extremely helpful. The room was great, very comfy bed and nice powerful shower. And the cooked breakfast! Delicious! I would truly recommended this hotel to anyone, particularly those looking for an easy pitstop that is close to the motorway. Very impressed.

"First class service for our Wedding Day"

5
08/11/2016

From the moment we first booked our wedding reception we experienced first class service and knew we had the best venue. Our wedding coordinator (Emma) went above and beyond the call of duty at every turning point. We both have extremely high standards and the hotel and staff really did deliver. The function room: our wedding reception room was decorated to perfection. We visited other hotels in the Bristol region where the decor was tired and in dire need of a refurb. Not at The Gables. The room is a great size, extremely clean and the tables and chairs all looked stunning on the day. We opted for chair covers, had our budget not stretched to that it really wouldn't have mattered. The addition of fairy lights in the room really did add that little sparkle - which during the evening was perfect. In addition the reception room has the added bonus of its own private bar. Accommodation: many of our party stayed for more than one night and all had the highest praise for their rooms. Rooms are well equipped, very clean and spacious. We had the the honeymoon suite (obviously) which boasts coffee making facilities, a four-poster bed and a jacuzzi bath. When you've been on your feet all day the jacuzzi bath really is a welcome addition. The bed and pillows (I'm very fussy about my pillows) were very comfortable. Food: we have eaten at The Gables on many occasions now. From Sunday lunches, to specific events (Father's Day lunch) to our wedding and of course breakfast. On every single occasion they have delivered delicious, high quality, good value food. The service on our wedding day was top notch and all food was served piping hot with good portion sizes and in a timely manner. We really couldn't have asked for more. Staff: the staff really are what makes this hotel one we will go back to time and time again, particularly if we need to hold an event. Every single member of staff we dealt with was friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble and it's clear that a high standard is placed on them. They deliver at every turn. Communication: many of our suppliers had to deal direct with the hotel in order to arrange delivery and collection of items. Emma coordinated this to perfection. Location: the hotel is located off of the A38. This was perfect for us and our guests, many of whom had travelled from all over the UK; we didn't notice any road noise whilst staying at the hotel. In fact during the day of our wedding many of our guests gathered outside for drinks whilst photos were done. In summary this is a wonderful hotel with extremely helpful staff, great food, clean accommodation and all at an extremely competitive rate. Thank you!

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN Bristol North The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much Kelly for posting such a wonderful review. It was our absolute pleasure to look after you and your guests on such a special day. All your fabulous comments will be passed on to our staff who helped make your wedding day so special for you. Please accept our congratulations once again, and we look forward to welcoming you both back in the very near future.

"Autumn Break"

5
01/11/2016

Stayed on an Autumn Break deal with Dinner included on the first night. The location is very convenient for driving to, as it's on the A38 and close to the M5. We found some quieter country lanes for a pleasant bike ride in the local area. The hotel staff were all very friendly and welcoming and our room was comfortable with a very big king-size bed (actually two singles together). I was pleasantly surprised to find three well-kept real ales in the bar. The evening meal was really good and we enjoyed the buffet breakfast with free-range eggs and plenty of variety to choose from. Although fronting on to the A38 the hotel is set back so you could barely hear the road in our room. We would happily stay there again.

"Reasonable food - Good sevice - Enjoyed"

4
31/10/2016

Visited for lunch on a Groupon deal and must say that I enjoyed the food and the dining experience. Pleasant restaurant dining room which could be described as functional rather than luxurious. The service was certainly praiseworthy and the staff helpful and friendly . Fairly limited menu but that is no bad thing as an over extended menu in a hotel venue usually means most of the food is going to be microwaved readymeals. The food itself at the Gables is competent rather than original or inspired but nevertheless it's nicely presented and I enjoyed a tasty satisfying meal. All in all an enjoyable midweek lunch.

"Club Annual Dinner"

5
30/10/2016

Booked by the Bowls club for the annual Dinner Dance and Awards. Very prompt and efficient front desk on arrival. Bar was well staffed to handle the pre event drinks service. Dinner was fine, although occasionally a little slow with the front tables often a course ahead in service compared to the back tables. But serving a large groups of people is always a challenge and the staff were swift, polite and ensured we did eventually all get a nice meal. Disco booked by club was excellent with all the right dancing music for the age range. Bedroom was clean and tidy, with sufficient towels and spotless bathroom. We had a room at the back so very peaceful sleep, when we eventually got to bed. Breakfast in the morning had a good selection and was kept stocked up with all the usual full English breakfast items you expect, plus fresh fruit selection and cereals. Would happily attend another event here and would recommend for any visitors or people travelling on the M5 motorway, with J14 just a few minutes away.

"overnight stay"

4
30/10/2016

Only stayed one night but it was excellent. Bed very comfortable and what a joy to have a bath, so many hotels just have showers and a leisurely soak, such a bonus!! There was a murder mystery night on so rather concerned we as non participants would be sidelined but the opposite. Our meal in the restaurant very good and our waitress so helpful and pleasant. Breakfast busy but again no problems. Only comment would be the lighting in the bedroom rather dim, not easy to read but apart from that minor detail a lovely stay.

"Excellent stay, fab staff."

5
30/10/2016

We stayed for one night on Thursday 27th October. Excellent room, spacious and comfortable, loved the 4 poster bed and jacuzzi bath. The room was clean and modern. Evening meal in the bar was excellent, my two young children loved their meals too. The staff were fantastic especially Kate. Her customer service is fab and is so friendly and smiley she is lovely. Breakfast was fab too, such a great choice there was something for everyone. Again Kate and the staff were helpful and friendly, having recently stayed in a Cornish hotel where at breakfast you arent even acknowledged, having smiley, friendly staff is a bonus you have certainly some fab staff which makes the hotel, thanks for a great stay.

"The night before Dad's wedding"

22/10/2016

The Gables was the cheapest hotel on Booking.com when I searched. It is a well presented 3 star. Reception was manned and service was great. Some of the decor beyond reception is a bit tired but overall still looks and feels good. Room was smallish but well equipped. Noise from the A38 and the bar was a bit of an issue (and the reason for the dropped Mark). Meal in the restaurant was lovely. Scallops as a starter were divine. Good selection of drinks. On the spur of the moment decided to stay over nite following a lovely day out at Berkeley Castle, and the Best Western has been a good choice of ours in York in the past so The Gables was a consideration. Yolander took our reservation over the phone and happy for us to book in after we had finished our day at the Castle. For £55 B&B was excellent value. The room was more than adequately sized, clean and fresh and with this in mind we had no doubts about dining there in the evening. The young man who waited on our table was very polite and pleasant. I noticed from his badge that he was a trainee, and I have to say as a mother, his parents should be very proud of him and his mentor, for he was knowledgable, considerate and offered very good suggestions. We were also very impressed that there was a separate outdoor smoking area well away from the alfresco seating area outside, I only wish more places offered this, and I for one do not relish smokers puffing their smoke over us while we eat ??, however we sat out under the moon light enjoying a nite cap. Breakfast was amazing, what a selection of fresh food, from cooked to continental, cereals and fruit, juices, teas and coffee wow, Have got our eye on a Murder Mystery weekend stay ??.

Stayed for one night lovely Hotel warm welcome, great spacious room very clean and comfortable, tea and coffee facilities in room, staff were friendly, breakfast was included and was very nice but the only negative i have is that the breakfast could have been a lot warmer. Overall a great stay.

We stayed for one night. Staff were very helpful and efficient. Our room was very nice. Tray containing tea/ coffee in room. Beds were comfortable. There was a slight noise from traffic but it wouldn't stop us using the hotel again. Breakfast was very nice. Plenty of parking.

"A disappointing, two night break."

05/10/2016

The hotel was clean, comfortable with a reasonably well appointed room and very well positioned for access to the motorway, The majority of the staff were friendly and knowledgeable but dining proved to be a very disappointing experience. Dinner on the first evening (included in the package) was acceptable but nothing more. After a long, tiring second day we decided to dine in the restaurant again..... what a disaster. My quail's egg starter was completely uncooked and I complained and could not eat it, my main was a vegetable curry with almost raw broccoli and other similar, hardly cooked vegetables; again I had to send it back and sustain myself with cheese and biscuits, The newly appointed hotel manager was sympathetic and understanding and withdrew the bill in it's entirety, apologising profusely, but the damage was done, although I appreciated and excepted his gesture. Perhaps the chef has now been replaced and the new hotel manager is 'on top' of the culinary shortcomings, we wish him well, but let this be a warning. I have considered carefully, and delayed, in posting this rather damning review.

"Gables know how to recruit the best staff."

05/10/2016

My husband and I stayed at The Gables overnight while visiting the area. The check in staff were lovely. Our room was comfortable and very clean. The hospitality tray contained some yummy biscuits, the usual tea and coffee, and some hot chocolate - nice touch. We had a drink in the bar which was comfortable and modern. Breakfast was great. There was a full buffet including all that you'd want on a traditional fry up including black pudding and mushrooms. There was stacks of preserves, continental breakfast items, cereals, juices etc. What made the stay so good was the staff. Reception, breakfast front of house, bar service - everyone was so warm and welcoming. The Gables certainly know how to recruit the best staff! Would I go again? Definitely yes, and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in that area.

Stayed here for two nights while on business and it's what you expect from a Best Western. Overall the hotel and facilities delivered exactly what I needed for the short amount of time I was there. Staff were friendly. Rooms were clean and bed was comfy. Bathroom was looking a little dated however. Plenty of available parking even when arriving at 11pm. Personally I was a little disappointed in the quality of the cooked breakfast on the first day, but saying that, it was all edible and there was plenty of other choice for the second morning of my stay.

"Second time here and just as good"

29/09/2016

We stopped here before on our way to Devon. With its proximity to the motorway and being next to Slimbridge, its makes an ideal place to take a nights break away from it all.The dinner was just what we needed after a drive down from Yorkshire. The room was nice and clean and the staff couldn't be more helpful. The breakfast choice was good as you could have fish besides the normal full English. Yes we will be back when travelling down again especially as we are members of the wetlands trust.

"Quiet rural location near Bristol"

24/09/2016

Booked at the last minute this is a pleasant rural hotel catering for the local population and visitors alike. The staff are excellent, reception was very helpful allowing me early access to my room, I was especially grateful having travelled a while. The location is just off the M5 easy to find, and there are some lovely local inns to visit for real ale. I booked Dinner , B & B and enjoyed a surprisingly good meal, the chef would appear to know his business as the food had an edge with very enjoyable flavors. My room was well equipped, good and fast Internet. A little cramped with a double bed, but most acceptable. The Guest book was excellent, clear and informative. Although only September the hotel has already a formidable number of christmas meals and events booked, a clear indication that the hotel meets the local needs in the regard. A well stocked bar and pleasant restaurant with a diverse menu In summary a lovely hotel , situated in a rural location, with easy access from the M5. Excellent staff and a creative chef..a good find!

We stayed for a couple of nights, seduced by a couple of tickets for Slimbridge nearby. Excellent room; pleasant but unobtrusive service, and a very nice breakfast. Did suggest that a new toaster was required. Or at least an overhaul of the present one. But all hotels seem to suffer from inefficient toasters!

I purchased a voucher through Groupon for overnight stay at nearby hotel with breakfast and zoo tickets for 2 adults & up to 2 children. Excellent value. £89 for us. So I didn't really know what to expect. Natalie on reception was very friendly and welcoming. And nothing was too much trouble. The zoo tickets were actually valid for a year which I didn't know. We had a family room, which was a big size and comfortable. There was a proper bed for my son (not just a sofa bed). The bathroom spacious and both rooms clean. There was tea and coffee facilities in the room. The breakfast in the morning was delicious, self service buffet. Very good choice. My only grumble would be the toaster, it's one of those ones where the bread moves along the elements and doesn't hardly toast the first time around but burns if you do it twice! Would be nice to have nicer bread than just basic sliced. We've already booked to go back for an event they are hosting at Christmas. ????

The hotel is situated off the A38 but our room 119 on the ground floor was at the back so couldn't hear any traffic noise, all the staff we met were friendly and welcoming, the room itself was an average size, the bed was comfy and linen clean and fresh, a few scuff marks on the walls and skirting but nothing too bad, the shower was good, powerful with plenty of hot water. We sat in the bar and ate in the evening, thought the food was really good, tasty and well cooked we also enjoyed breakfast the next morning liked that there were plenty of staff taking care of coffee, tea etc and again all very polite and friendly. Would definitely recommend this hotel for a relaxed no frills stay,

Stayed for two nights with the hotels "summer" deal. Very good value.the evening meal included on the first night was very good. We both had steak which was cooked perfectly. The only downside of the meal was the strawberry pavlova which was actually a merangue on top of another with cream and strawberries in the middle...not what I expected but still tasty. The service from all staff was excellent . The room was large with large comfortable bed. The room was clean very comfortable, yes there was a little road noise but we were aware of that when we booked! All in all a very enjoyable stay.thank you.

Very pleasant hotel and restaurant, easy to find, large car park. Made you feel very welcome. Menu is interesting and trying to be different, we liked it.Very good service, food was excellent and well presented, extensive wine list. A good evening out, restaurant lacks any views and not many windows but that does not affect the food.

"Quiet on the inside, a bit noisy on the outside"

24/08/2016

The Gables Hotel is situated on the A38, a few minutes drive from the M5, J14. The Rooms are quite compact, although they're a similar size to other hotels in this price range. It was pretty quiet when we stayed, which meant that breakfast time was not one big mad rush. Breakfast is a good buffet spread, with a decent choice of cereals, fruit, hot food, and drink. We didn't have an evening meal with the hotel, so am unable to comment on the food quality for this meal, but don't see any reason why it should be bad considering the quality at breakfast time. As is becoming usual in hotels, wi-fi is pretty fast in your room. Great views from our room which was rear facing, although not every rear facing room will have this. When we stayed, it was 2 full complete days of warm sunshine (yeah, I know and it was Summer as well), so we had a sit down outside on the patio furniture. Whilst it's lovely to sit outside, the hotel is right next to the A38, so expect regular speeding traffic noise. Bottom line: a decent place to stay with no grumbles from us, just happy memories.

"An ok visit...."

As we were guided to our rooms there was a strong smell of manure in the corridors. I stayed in room 304 which I have to admit wasn't the most practical - to get the room you have to walk passed 2 conference rooms - both with see-through doors, so whilst you're in your Jim jams there will be people in the opposite room in shirt and ties - not the best situation to be in. We was also greeted by many spiders so beware if you're scared of them, the bathroom was quite mouldy - see my photos. Even though I've probably been a bit harsh but truthful with the above, the breakfast was amazing! There was everything that you could imagine from black pudding to salami and fruit - really enjoyed the breakfast.

Highly recommended! Just an overnight stay, prior to visiting a nearby garden, at this well located and comfortable hotel . Really pleasant, helpful and smiling staff, nothing too much bother - providing excellent service. Well presented food with a wide choice of breakfast items. (We were even able to have soya milk!) Our room was modern, well furnished and spotlessly clean. We hope to visit again later in the year but would say that, being quite close to the M5, it is ideal for both individual visitors and also those requiring business/conference facilities.

had a very good deal for this hotel, short journey to get here, visited slimbridge and Berkeley castle. not to well sign posted and had to brake severely to avoid shooting past, although some of the furniture was of a seventies kind i.e. storage cupboards the room was fine enough. breakfast was plentiful but could have been hotter. placed centrally between Bristol and Gloucester, plenty to see and do .

My wife and I stayed 4 pleasant nights at The Gables. The hotel is easy to find, not far from the M5 and an ideal location if you are like us exploring the area eg Bristol, Bath, Gloucester, South Wales etc. Large car park. We were in room 122 on the ground floor at the back of the hotel (we may have heard traffic from the A38 if we were at the front of the hotel as we sleep with our windows open) which is a standard double room which we found very comfortable and spacious. We were however woken up by someone throwing tools into something about 0630. We didn't have evening meal in hotel as we were away in the evening so I cannot comment on that, however breakfast was well stocked and plentiful I had poached eggs everyday which were cooked to perfection. Overall the hotel was clean and tidy, with a warm atmosphere. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and a credit to the owners. Would we stay again? Most definitely. Would we recommend to others? Yes.

The exterior is nice however that is about all that is good about the hotel. The rooms are very dated and in need of an upgrade. The bar area is expensive and uncomfortable. The first morning we had breakfast it was good but we think only because we got there so early. The next morning we where about half an hour later and there was nothing left. That isn't an exaggeration either no cooked breakfast left or fresh juices of any kind just empty bottles and when we went to sit down none of the tables where set up even though over half of them where empty. We just gave up and left after a piece of toast each. Overall, for the price massively underwhelming and disappointing and expected a lot more.

"Very enjoyable venue for family get together & party"

31/07/2016

We visited The Gables Hotel, Falfield for a family birthday celebration and stayed for 2 nights. Gables is part of the Best Western symbol group and is a fairly typical 3 star hotel trying to attract a mixture of business & leisure trade. Generally I would say the hotel and its rooms looked on the tired and dated side. Our room was average in size, contained the usual facilities for a 3 star hotel, although the double bed was on the softer side. The bathroom was also tired but the shower over the bath was thankfully very powerful - something which older hotels can sometimes suffer from. What allows this hotel to stand apart from other similar hotels of this standard and age was both the quality of food and the friendly/efficient staff. We had a group 'afternoon tea' of sandwiches, scones and cakes for lunch on Saturday all of which were excellent quality and flavour. Our evening sit down dinner was a three course meal for c.35, with three choices for each course pre-ordered. The food was served quickly for each course and the quality and presentation of each was excellent, which can so often not be the case when large numbers are catered for. The function room in which the group were entertained for both lunch and dinner was fairly standard for a hotel but was extremely thoughtfully decorated, for both events, which helped to create the right atmosphere. The staff at the hotel were really efficient and helpful, at all times during our stay, which helped to make our stay so enjoyable - from efficient food delivery, finding leftover cakes for late guests, accommodating many breakfast table re-configurations to allow family groups to sit together. Our rooms for the weekend were good value, including breakfast (which many want to charge extra for!). I would certainly recommend the Gables as a suitable place to gather with family & friends.

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review

"Over priced and dated rooms."

21/07/2016

We stayed for 2 nights in June as we were attending a wedding nearby. The room was a decent size and fairly comfortable but very dated. On the first night I had a bath, the shower and bath leaked considerably leaving us with a flooded bath room and no clean towels. My husband went to reception for more towels and reported the leak. Next morning the same thing happened, we again spoke to reception who said someone would visit our room later and look. We had the "do not disturb" sign on our door until lunchtime as we were getting ready to attend the wedding. This was taken off when we left. We again had a load of wet towels which we left on the bathroom floor expecting the bathroom to be checked, clean towels to be replaced and the room cleaned but on arriving back late in the evening our room had not been visited at all. We again had to go to reception the next morning for more clean towels. On checking out the reception simply said thank you and goodbye, no mention of how was our stay... Also on the first morning there were a group of men talking loudly directly outside our door. There are meeting rooms opposite our rooms. This was a long time before 9am. I appreciate the hotel has to hold meetings/conferences but could other rooms be provided for them to talk in? The happiness and comfort of all paying guests should be considered. There was a good choice for breakfast but average quality of food. The lady in the restaurant however was friendly and helpful. For the price it was a very disappointing stay and I would not return.

"Awful Customer Service"

17/07/2016

Five star prices and one star service. Terrible customer service, rooms close to the car park and front of the hotel are noisy due to A38 main road. The reception staff look tired and uninterested and the price category for this hotel resembles that of London and is therefore not accurate for this area. Poor value, poor service and overall a poor experience.

On checking in the gentleman on reception summoned a female as the room I had been allocated was on the 1st Floor (problem was no lift) and at the furthest point in the hotel. She refused to change my rooms saying the hotel rooms had been allocated. The gentleman did offer to take my bags upstairs but in fairness was busy checking people in so friends took our bags up Also there is a step up to enter the bar which didn't affect me me but would present problems for wheelchair/scooter users Shame this happened as the bar and restaurant and other reception staff could not have been more helpful or friendly.

"Stained sheets!"

3
10/07/2016

We booked a two night stay at The Gables in a superior room, we were shocked when we entered our room, dated, tired and grubby! When pulling the covers back on the bed I noticed a big yellow stain but as it was so late I decided to leave it to the morning to mention it, I put a clean towel across the stain so that I could sleep on it. The next day I wrote a note for housekeeping kindly asking them to change the sheet, I even put a smiley face, I put the note across the stain so that they would have to remove it to strip the bed. We arrived back in our room late the second night and it didn't even occur to me that the stained sheet would still be there......but it was, but what made it worse was that the note was no where to be seen so they had obviously removed the evidence which I found really dis-respectful, I marched down to reception and told the male receptionist that I was note happy, he said he would make a note of my complaint, I then said that as it was so late and that we were leaving in the morning I would put up with it but that I was really annoyed, at no point did he offer to have the sheet changed then and there. We decided to skip breakfast the next morning as to be honest we just wanted to leave, on checking out the same receptionist was still there and the duty manager and I told him that I really wasn't happy, he then mentioned that the receptionist had offered to change the sheet, and when I looked back at him his face said it all! The manager then asked him if I had paid my bill giving the impression that he would have sorted something out for me if I hadn't, because I had he just said he would mention my complaint. I walked away once again feeling let down. If I can give any advice, please think again before staying here, I wouldn't want the same thing to happen to somebody else!!

"Very good stopover and handy for WWT Slimbridge"

05/07/2016

We stopped at The Gables Hotel on a Sunday night prior to visiting WWT Slimbridge the following day. The hotel was easy to find a couple of miles off the M5 and there was plentiful free parking. Check-in was friendly and efficient, as was check-out the following morning. Our room was of a good size with all of the expected facilities. There was a large & comfortable bed and the bathroom was also large with a good & hot shower. The free wi-fi signal was strong & reliable, which is important to me, and we weren't troubled by road noise from the adjacent A38. We had a drink in the bar which offered a couple of real ales which was appreciated. Breakfast was of a good quality and set us up well for the day ahead. There was even fried bread for me which was an increasingly rare treat! The hotel is particularly convenient if you are visiting WWT Slimbridge which was just a 10-minute drive away. It was also extremely good value on a Sunday night and we certainly would stay here again when we revisit Slimbridge.

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for posting such a fabulous review of your recent stay with us. It is always so pleasing to hear such wonderful feedback from our guests, and I will pass on all your fabulous comments to our team. We are always offering special overnight breaks on our website that include WWT Tickets. We also offer Bristol Zoo overnight package's, perhaps next time you may wish to visit the zoo also!! Thank you once again for spending the time to write a review, and we look forward to welcoming you back to The Gables in the very near future.

"Enjoyable Sunday Lunch"

03/07/2016

Called in today and was surprised that there was a carvery as well as the bar menu. After enquiring as to whether there was a table for two..we were taken to the restaurant and seated. A waitress took our drinks order and swiftly brought them to us. I fully expected someone to take our order .but after waiting for sometime, no one appeared.. .eventually we caught the eye of a waiter ..who explained the procedure for the carvery. The choice was Beef, Turkey and Gammon..with all the trimmings. I must say all the food was kept hot and everything was cooked to perfection. We tucked in....alas we couldn't find any room for a pudding..but maybe next time.

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback on your recent visit to our restaurant. I am glad you enjoyed your Sunday carvery lunch, and I hope you will return soon where you can enjoy one of our delicious desserts next time.

"Perfect for business"

28/06/2016

Ample parking, nIce breakfast (as I arrived early for my meeting) friendly staff. Nothing too much trouble. Attended a course for the day and would consider this hotel if I needed a training venue. Didn't stay overnight so can't comment. Nice surroundings. Very accessible to the M5 (and therefore the M4)

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking your time to post such a wonderful review. We pride ourselves in excellent customer service here at The Gables hotel, so it is always so pleasing to here such positive feedback. We look forward to welcoming you once again.

"Ok food - overpriced for what you get!"

3
28/06/2016

I have been to the Gables twice for food now, neither times I have been particularly impressed. Found staff unfriendly both times...the first time I requested a normal glass for my water instead of a large wine glass and I was told no because "that's not how they do things" which I thought was odd for a simple request. Today I had a sandwich which was supposed to be served with "homemade root vegetable crisps", instead we all got served plain Doritos....not what I would expect for £5.95 per person! The bread was also extremely dry on one side - clearly had been left out too long or not kept properly. Food is ok but for the quality, overpriced!

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
I was very disappointed to read that your recent visit to our hotel failed to meet your expectations, and I hope that you will accept our sincere apologies. Our reviews on the staff at The Gables are always so positive, with reviews on how friendly and helpful the staff are, so this was a surprise to read. Please rest assured that all comments will be taken on board and passed on to our management team. Thank you for spending the time to post a review as all feedback helps us to improve our service to all our future guests.

"Wonderful nights sleep on a fab bed"

4
25/06/2016

Stayed for one night and had a fabulous nights sleep . Breakfast was abit disappointing - 6 minute wait for fried eggs! so didn't bother as the rest of my breakfast was already on my plate. Staff very efficient - cleared my table whilst I was getting my toast

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking your time to submit a review on your recent stay with us. I was pleased to hear that you had a fabulous nights sleep, and we hope to welcome you once again in the near future.

"Murder Mystery"

20/06/2016

I attended a murder mystery night at the Gables on 10th June and was impressed. The staff were friendly and very well organised. The food was efficiently served during the event and was very nice. We stayed the night after the murder mystery. The room was basic but clean and comfortable. The buffet breakfast in the morning was excellent. Well cooked and great choice. Well done to the Gables. Oh, and although I wasn't really looking forward to the murder mystery I actually enjoyed it and the actors did a great job.

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your excellent 5 star review. We are delighted that you enjoyed our Murder Mystery evening. I will ensure that your kind feedback is passed on to all the staff. Hearing such positive reviews of our hotel is always appreciated so thank you for spending the time in posting a review. We hope to welcome you back to The Gables Hotel soon.

"No vegetarian options"

2
17/06/2016

went for dinner with friends and there was no vegetarian option on the menu. Had to have the mushroom risotto which came with duck breast which I did not have. Was originally charged the full price but this was reduced by £5 as I did not have the duck. I paid more for my risotto than friends who had salmon and haddock!

"Convenient hotel"

3
17/06/2016

Quite a basic but well located hotel just off the M5 and reasonably close to Bristol. It is clean and we got a free upgrade to a King size bed room. Food was ok but nothing special, staff seemed to be friendly but inexperienced. I would stay again.

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review of your recent stay with us. We hope that you will visit us again soon.

"Murder night"

4
11/06/2016

This was the second murder mystery night at The Gables we've been to. We love the atmosphere of these games & the production group are quite good. The food is adequate- in fact last night was better than the previous time. Obviously the menu choices are limited for an event of this type and you have to pre order when you book. I requested some dairy free alternatives and was very pleased with my dishes. There was a bit of a cock up when we arrived as our group of 6 weren't sat on one table but the manager sorted us out with a table of our own which turned out better.

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for posting a review of your recent stay with us. I was delighted to hear that you enjoyed the Murder Mystery evening once again. Your feedback is very important to us, and I was pleased that we could rectify the table situation for you also. We hope to see you again in the very near future.

"Well organised evening of fun!"

5
07/06/2016

We recently stayed at the Gables for the George Michael tribute as a girls night with close family. The evening was fun and well organised. The food was lovely and the staff were kind and attentive. The breakfast the following day was just what you'd expect! A big English breakfast, perfect for a big night the evening before! The offer for the tribute, dinner, with bed and breakfast was great value for money and we really enjoyed ourselves! There were a couple of strange tasting beers served, but as soon as we mentioned it management immediately sorted it out. This kind of service and attentiveness is excellent and we were all really happy with our stay! Thanks to the team!

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your 5 star review regarding your recent stay at The Gables. I am delighted that you enjoyed our George Michael tribute evening and I will pass on your thanks to all the team. We hold various tribute evenings during the year and we hope to see you again in the near future.

"Best Western -NOT"

25/05/2016

Reception service good , bistro service shoddy, food TERRIBLE. Spoke to the manager before departure and all he kept saying was 'Thanks for the feedback' It doesn't help that the stay although short, was so poor. Due to location and my preferred resting place being full, I stopped here. Not again.

Natalie J, Front Office Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Please allow me to firstly apologise for the shortcomings that you experienced on your recent stay with us. We are extremely disappointed to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations and most certainly did not meet the high standards that we all strive so hard to achieve here at The Gables Hotel. Your business is very important to us and by telling us how we can improve, you are helping us deliver a superior service for all our future guests.

"Overall good - would stay again"

4
25/05/2016

Great service from reception team, really pleasant and efficient - even organised the return of an item of left property by post for me at no cost, which was much appreciated. The room that I stayed in was very nice as well, clean, modern and comfortable - great nights sleep and no disturbances. The restaurant was a bit of a mixed bag for me - service was extremely friendly and willing, but there was a surprising amount of confusion about what dinner bed and breakfast allowances include and several of my party were charged incorrectly because of this and had to contact the hotel post stay to clear up the issues. Menu in the restaurant was ok - bit simplistic and no free range options that I could see, but the food that i ordered was cooked to a decent standard. Didn't blow my socks off but didn't make me want to complain either. Overall, a good experience and I would stay again if I was in the area again.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to post a review of your recent stay. We are delighted to see that you will stay with us again in future despite the fact that we didn't quite get things right on this occasion.

"Slimbridge trip"

5
22/05/2016

Stayed here for two nights as we were going to Slimbridge. Rooms ok but nothing special, furniture and bit dated in room. Everything worked ok and staff were friendly. Breakfast was again ok but nothing special. Good prices and served it's purpose well.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for choosing us for your base for your visit to Slimbridge. We are delighted with the 5 star review and hope to welcome you back in the future.

"Overnight Stop"

5
21/05/2016

Just one night stop on way home to Cornwall. Hotel is just a short, convenient distance from the M5. Very friendly welcome at reception and again in the bar when we went for our evening meal. Comfortable room. Good breakfast. All very satisfactory. Thank you.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
We are so glad you have found us and given us a 5 star review. We look forward to many more visits in the future.

"Visit to Slimbridge"

4
19/05/2016

We had wanted to visit Slimbridge again so took up the offer the Gables had sent us for their Spring break of a two nights stay with dinner the first night. It was our third visit to the Gables and overall we were very pleased with our stay and had a large ground floor room with a large ( comfortable) bed. We were restricted to Thursday and Friday nights with this offer. The breakfasts were very good with a wide choice although to our taste the bread was of poor quality. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Our dinner the first night was good though my husband was disappointed with his dessert. We had dinner early and we dined alone!! - other folk did come in as we were finishing. The second night we ate at a table in the bar and enjoyed a simpler one course meal. We felt it was very good value for money and was cheaper than most B&B's and with a dinner thrown in.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the kind and positive review following your stay with us. We hope to welcome you back again very soon.

"Good hotel - restaurant put a downer on it"

3
15/05/2016

My boyfriend and I stayed here for two nights, overall the hotel was really nice. The check in was friendly and the room was nice and comfortable. Breakfast was lovely, particularly the hot buffet. However, what let it down was the restaurant. We decided to eat here on the first night so when we checked in we decided to book. Originally we booked for half six however decided this was a bit early so wanted to book for around seven however were told we couldn't get a table till eight, so we decided to just have a late tea. When we got to the restaurant at eight though, there were only two other tables of people in there, despite being told it was fully booked! When ordering drinks I was told that they didn't do glasses of rose wine, only full bottles, then was confused as it turned out they did. The waiter then told my boyfriend (when he asked what beer they had) that they had Fosters and a beer which 'comes in a little bottle', but didn't know the name or anything else. The starter we ordered - antipasto - had hardly any meat on it at all, certainly not worth the money. The upside was that the mains were nice, my duck was cooked perfectly as was my boyfriends steak, however I still believe they were over priced for the amount you get. I would highly recommend the hotel, but not the restaurant - sorry!

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for sharing your feedback with us. We are pleased that overall you enjoyed your stay with us however we are disappointed to see that we fell short of our usual service standards at dinner and please accept our apologies for this. I do hope you will stay with us again in the future and allow us to redeem our reputation.

"Trip to Slimbridge wetland centre"

3
11/05/2016

Booked this trip to the wetland centre a month or so back to include The Gables hotel in the visit. Hotel staff were very welcoming and pleasent and the hotel public areas were clean and fresh. Breakfast for both mornings was served by very pleasent staff but, the food was a bit on the low quality side. We had 1 evening meal in the hotel and this was pretty good all round. The room was a free upgrade from standard and was a good size with the usual tea/coffee and ensuite. The bedroom was fine but, the ensuite could do with a bit of an update as black mould had taken root between some tiles and the toilet appeared to have a small leak around the back as there was always a small puddle of water evident. This hotel is a 3 star, what more is there to say

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for the feedback and rest assured we will take on board the points you have raised regarding the en suite facilities. If I could just ask you to let us know which room you stayed in that would be most helpful. Many thanks again.

"Brilliant hotel right location"

11/05/2016

We had a lovely one night stop over at this hotel. It's a great location just off the motorway as we where travelling to Plymouth the next day. We had a lovely meal in the resurant and a lovely cooked breakfast. The staff are really helpful.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the kind and positive review. We will share your comments with the team who will be delighted that you were happy with your stay.

"unexpectedly superb"

09/05/2016

1 overnight stay with my wife to attend a friends birthday event locally. I travel the world and stay in hotels all the time. On this occasion I upgraded to a superior room which normally in other hotels just gives more space. In the Gables we got a jaccuzzi bath, 4 poster bed and other additions that made all the difference. breakfast was really nice. The room was spotlessly clean, staff really friendly. I will definitely look at staying here again.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
It is always nice to get 5 star reviews and especially from such a discerning traveller. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

"Convenient Location with friendly staff"

4
09/05/2016

The hotel is convenient for access to the M4 and M5 motorways. Staff are welcoming and friendly. The food is good and reasonably priced. Without a lift it is preferable to select a ground-floor room in the rear of the hotel.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for the review of your stay with us and we hope you will choose to stay with us again in the future.

"Pleasant stay"

07/05/2016

Lovely hotel, super comfy bed, nice room. On the main road so a little noisy but that can't be helped. The staff are friendly and helpful but the food is a little average. Nice selection of food for breakfast. I had a vegetarian breakfast which was lovely. My friends who are the full English weren't impressed with the sausages though. All in all a perfectly pleasant stay.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the kind and positive feedback following your stay here with your friends. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future and hope that we can improve your opinion of our food when you return.

The staff were very friendly, however when asking a question the staff I spoke to didn't answer the questions correctly. The cleanliness off the rooms was ok but there was a lot of dust on higher level surfaces.

Many thanks for the feedback and I am sorry we did not meet our usual high standards but we will take on board your comments to improve for the future.

"Weekend break"

26/04/2016

Warm welcome from staff on our arrival. We had an evening meal which was superb, well presented as well as very tasty. Our room was lovely with a four poster bed for an extra touch of luxury for our short stay. Breakfast was again well presented and set us up for the day ahead. All in all we would visit again and found our stay very enjoyable. We would recommend a stay here.

"Improved since previous visit"

"Enjoyable stay."

4
14/04/2016

An enjoyable stay; friendly staff willing to help. Room and bed were comfy and nicely equipped. Slight quibble would be the road noise but this subsided overnight. Excellent beakfast; very reasonably priced bar menu but this was reflected in the food quality, it was perfectly acceptable but maybe not *** standard. All in all the plusses fully outweigh the minor negatives.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the feedback and we hope to have the opportunity to look after you again in the future.

"Large Function Extremely Successful"

5
14/04/2016

This was a dinner/dance function for over 100 people. The facilities for such a function are excellent with attractive decor. The dining tables are round and seated 8 in comfort, very nicely equipped and decorated. There is a good-sized dance floor, which is a sufficent distance from the dining area to permit conversation whilst still enjoying the ambiance from the music - an excellent disco sensitive to the likely tastes of its customers. The dedicated bar was convenient for both the dining area and dance area. The excellent staff provided a very well-managed function and every required service in a cheerful and friendly manner. One small disappointment was that the quality of the food was not quite as good as expected, particularly the roast beef, which was really just "pub grub" standard. However, the whole evening was such a whopping success, we will be back for more! Quite a few people stayed at the hotel and reported it to be excellent accommodation, but we did not since we live locally.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the excellent 5 star review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed the dinner and dance here at The Gables and look forward to welcoming you back for more in the future.

"Great stay"

13/04/2016

We visited the gables on a groupon deal, which included bed and breakfast. Check in was good except as there was a function on we weren't told where to go for breakfast etc or where the bar was. The room was good the only thing I would say is that the bathroom fan is on every time you put the light on and was very noisy. Breakfast was great the food was good quality Not sure if we would stay again as it was a bit far out of Bristol then we hoped for

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for your review and we are pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. I do hope you will return in the future as there are lots of attractions close by for you to experience without having to venture in to Bristol. Slimbridge WWT, The Cotswolds and Berkeley Castle to name a few.

"Nice place to stop"

5
12/04/2016

We booked this as a stop over going to Devon.Best decision we have made, it was so easy to find from the motorway and it was such good weather we spent a day at the Slimbridge Reserve which was 15 mins drive away.We had a nice relaxing meal in the restaurant and a good nights sleep plus a grand english breakfast to set us on our way. The only bad point was a grubby shower mat, but thats easily removed.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
A big thank you for the excellent 5 star review. We look forward to welcoming you back next time you are travelling to or from Devon.

"Yet Another Nice Stay"

5
08/04/2016

My wife & I stayed in our favourite room (408), requested via Natalie & provided. The recently decorated rooms are nicely done, the new curtains & headboards are a welcome improvement. The most improved element was the en suite floor & shower. You can now enjoy a well regulated temperature & pressured shower. The bar and bar staff provided a nice end to the evening. Our breakfast was great as usual & set us up nicely for the day. We enjoy the friendly atmosphere and the improved ambiance simply adds to the comfort. The GM Andrew went out of way to ensure we had enjoyed our stay as did Natalie in ensuring our room request was actions.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
A big thank you again from everyone here at The Gables. It is always nice to get feedback from our regular guests and we ware delighted that you find the improvements we are making in the bedrooms so positive. We look forward to many more visits from you in the future.

"Gables Hotel, Falfield, South Glos."

08/04/2016

A very pleasant hotel with friendly and helpful staff. The breakfasts were excellent with quality, local ingredients. We didn't have an evening meal. The rooms were very comfortable (though I prefer a firmer pillow) with all the facilities that one expects. I was especially pleased to find a Gideon Bible in the room, having been greatly helped by reading one when in distress many years ago. The hotel is handily placed for visiting Slimbridge Bird Sanctuary which is well worth seeing, and also for the Cotswolds. We received a free entry voucher for Bristol Zoo which was also good. We would certainly visit again.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review

"Great hotel good value friendly staff"

01/04/2016

We stayed in a family room as we were attending a party there. The room was a triple room and on request the hotel out an additional fold up bed for us so we could accommodate our family. There was still enough room to move around so it was fine and really good value. The room was clean and well decorated. The bathroom was also newly decorated although the shower did go cold every now and again which was a bit annoying. Breakfast was good, buffet style and plenty to choose from although it finished very promptly at 10am and the clocks had gone forward that day so it did seem a bit early. My daughter left a teddy behind in the room and the staff tracked us down and arranged for us to get it back which was very kind of them and often hotels don't bother which was very good of them. Overall a good stay and we would go back there again without hesitation.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for the 5 star review. It was a pleasure to look after Julie and all her dear friends and family and we are all so pleased you enjoyed the occasion and look forward to welcoming you back soon. We were also very happy to re-unite "Teddy" with your daughter.

21/03/2016

Looking for a good value, comfortable hotel in a convenient location for the Bristol and Bath area, for a short break, we booked a room at the Gables for 4 nights bed and breakfast on their Leisure Package. Blessed with 4 days of blue skies and sunshine, we were able to visit Bristol, Bath, Clevedon , National Trust houses and various other locations in the area with ease. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed, evening meals in the bar or restaurant ( we ate in each night ) were good and the breakfasts excellent. All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful. All in all a very pleasant stay and good value for money

Overall the Gables Hotel is Very Good. Excellant Food, the staff were polite and helpful. The only critisim I have is that they don't cater for the disabled. There is no lift or ''walk in'' shower, I am disabled so I could not have a shower. Fortunately I was given a down stairs room.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review

"Return visit"

10/03/2016

Having stayed here a few years ago for a wedding I decided to treat my partner to a night away Dinner B&B.. Room very clean and tidy and reception staff helpful. The food served in restaurant was pretty average .. Prawn cakes for starters looked and tasted more like stuffing balls. I had salmon for main which was sadly burnt... When asked by the waitress if everything was ok I did say no and was offered for it to be replaced ... Hence leaving me partner to eat alone.. I declined and picked at what was edible.. Waited over 20 minutes for our drinks to arrive at the table... Hot sticky toffee pudding served luke warm and a cheesecake which I can only assume came from Iceland. Not once in 2 hours did a restaurant or duty manager attend the restaurant but the young waitresses, in fairness, did their best. Huge hen party going on in the function room which did not effect us although at 8am I the morning the outside reception area was covered in empty glasses, bread rolls & cigarette butts with no attempt with any staff cleaning up. On the plus side the buffet breakfast was really good and plenty to choose from. On check out the reception and duty manager kindly took the price of the salmon off of the bill! This is a 3 star hotel so please do not expect anything other than 3 star !

"An Excellent Overnight Stay"

This Hotel is indeed one which we wished we had found earlier.. All aspects of this Hotel, from the Bedrooms and Bathrooms to the Restaurant and Public Areas are spotless and well maintained.. The Staff are efficient yet friendly and helpful.. The Restaurant Menu and Wine list offer a good choice at very reasonable costs... The Breakfast is Wonderful and plentiful.. We will definately return now we have found this little gem, which for us is so convenient to the M5 being just off Junction 14, yet peaceful and quiet.

"Last minute booking only standard rooms available....never again!!!"

07/03/2016

This is my second visit to The Gables, on this occasion I booked at last minute as in booked on the same day that I wished to check in literally within hours of check in time opening. On this visit there were no executive rooms available so I had no choice but to book a standard room although I am used to higher class stays. Also having a Best Western card I was hoping for an upgrade but on this occasion it didn't happen as the hotel was full. On check in I was greeted by one of the duty managers and the welcome was pleasant. I stayed two nights, I did not eat dinner in the restaurant on this visit however I did eat breakfast and it is the standard set up of buffet style whether you prefer hot or cold food. I ordered room service the first night which carries a £3 charge however I didn't mind this as I was too tired to sit and dine downstairs. I ordered a cheese jacket potato which according to the menu comes with homemade root vegetable crisps and a side salad, with a side of bread and butter and a pot of tea for one. The menu is not accurate as the crisps I received were tortilla chips certainly not homemade. Also the bread and butter was also wrong as it is Flora not butter. The tea was nice and with real milk not packets. I know that all sounds picky about the menu but if you are going to make claims of homemade and butter this should be at least delivered on. Thankfully a gratuity charge is not automatically added so I was able to write down an amount I thought was suitable since I didn't have any change for an actual tip. The food arrived promptly and I cannot fault the quality but the attention to detail should be key especially for a B. Western. The standard room is similar to other budget hotels, basic and cheap. I would stay at this hotel again and plan to later this year however not in a standard room as the room is freezing. I had to keep the curtains closed and the radiator up high to maintain a comfortable warmth in the room otherwise it is freezing as the windows let in so much cold air. (Room 402) The bed was a little lumpy but mostly ok, the pillows firm as normal. The room was well kept and clean the housekeeping staff are friendly and efficient, in refreshing the room as mine was done whilst I went down for breakfast and when I came back up the lady was just finishing. A word of warning to people with sensitive skin do not use the liquid hand soap provided as I came out in a rash on my hands after using it which has still not disappeared. Unfortunately at this end of the corridor with the other double standard rooms people are not as quiet when entering or leaving their rooms. Also the lighting is totally different in the corridor, where the executive four poster and king size bed rooms are the corridor has dimly lit mood lighting I assume to encourage a peaceful atmosphere and reduce noise, then when you get to the standard room section it is normal bright lights so obviously people that book the standard rooms don't get quite the same treatment as the executives. The shower is low powered but its hot so you cant complain, although the set up of the large shower screen is a little odd, as to get in you have to open the shower screen to gain access otherwise the toilet is in the way for you to get into the shower / bath easily. Of course when opening the shower screen with the shower on warming up, water tends to drip all over the floor. In summary a lovely hotel which I will return to but definitely not in a standard room even if I do travel alone.

We stayed here for four very enjoyable nights in a comfortable room. Breakfast was of a high standard as was evening dinner apart from one slight hiccup that was soon put right by a most genial and attentive manager. The staff were, without exception, helpful, polite and friendly.

"No shower!"

28/02/2016

Comfortable hotel and handy if you're on the M5. Rooms was fine. Staff friendly (cleaners more so than the suits!). Breakfast OK but suffered from being buffet style so expect overdone (ie dried out food) if you don't arrive as the servery is being refreshed, The big downer for us was the shower which did not work at all apart from a momentary blast of hot water when first turned on. We mentioned it at check out... "sorry, we'll report it to maintenance!". No suggestion of compensation. Shame really......

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
We are all so sorry you were disappointed with your stay and hope that you will return in the future whereupon we will work towards redeeming our reputation with you.

We checked in here with friends. We found the hotel very pleasant. Our room was as expected from a Best Western Hotel. Although, we experienced some noise from the radiator, it was fixed without delay. If we decided to visit this area again, we would definitely stay here.

Lovely stay with our friends for 3 nights Our room was at the front and very comfortable The only difficulty we found was with the lighting as there was no central light which made the room quite dark and having difficulty with our eyesight it caused a slight problem But sorry to say we did not bring it to the attention of the management at the time Nevertheless it did not really detract from the overall quality of the room We dined in the restaurant on the 3 evenings and found the meals to be very good and all staff to be very friendly and helpful We will not hesitate to stay again or recommend to friends

18/02/2016

The hotel was clean and tidy, although the room was in need of a little cheering up. Also, the food choice was limited, and clearly pre-prepared, judging by the non-availability of one of the menu items. My wife's food was served less hot than it should have been. Having said that, the hotel management did account for this when dealing with the bill, which was appreciated. One more thing, a rip really, it might be best to give directions from the M5. My Satnav took me away from the hotel.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review

We stayed at the Gables for just one night while visiting relatives; the hotel was lovely and warm and we had a quick and easy check in. Our room was well decorated and the bed was very comfortable. We didn't use the restaurant but visited the bar and received good service. We would certainly recommend the hotel to others and use it again ourselves.

Stayed here for one night on returning from a business trip - on my way back to Cornwall. Handy for the motorway and well away from the usual traffic closer to Bristol. Had dinner in the bar watching football on the box. Food was OK and service was very good. Reasonable choice of beers and wines as you would normally expect from a Best Western. Room was very pleasant and of course spotlessly clean with a big bed which I appreciate. Had a late breakfast which although was a buffet was well cooked and not all dried up. Again staff at breakfast were very pleasant and helpful. First stay here but it definitely won't be my last, an ideal spot to break a long journey.

"shocking the only word i can use"

09/02/2016

Firstly, I have travelled all around Britain on business for approximately 20yrs, and stayed in a great variety of standard of hotels and this is the very first time I have written any sort of response (bearing in mind I have had some poor experiences). Secondly, my company provides credit card details to provide pre arranged rate for DB and breakfast with a £** allowance for an evening meal and soft drinks. Today I was requested to leave the hotel due to not providing a swipe of a personal credit card. Yesterday when I arrived after travelling from Glasgow, I was requested to provide a credit card swipe in the event that I over spend on my companies allowance as per the hotels policy. I did explain to the receptionist that I do not have a credit card and I will happily pay for any additional expenditure that may occur whilst booking out. As I went for my evening meal the waitress then asked for my room number (provided) then proceeded to inform me that I had to make a credit card swipe prior to my meal. I explained I do not have a credit card and requested I be seated as per my arranged booking arrangements (and she can then take this up with the hotel manager). I was fed. NOTE: On arrival at the table I was presented with a menu that I would class as a bar menu (no separate bar/restaurant menu), I have to agree with other previous reviews that the food was of a pre-packaged maybe even microwaved (prawn fishcakes VERY dry and more brown than golden brown, pan fried duck breast ?? one colour all the way through and extremely tough, cylinder of potatoes solid and carrots looked so withered they had the same texture as an 80yr old Moroccan. Tell me you get this from freshly cooked? - and cheap though). As would anybody, I was feeling a little aggrieved by now, so later in the evening I went to the bar to order a small coke as I was still short £5 of my allowance, and yet again I was informed that this could not be actioned as I hadn't gave a card swipe. At this point I went to reception and did ask to speak to a manager to get this resolved, however the receptionist said it was sorted and I could now collect my coke. This morning when I was passing by the reception for my breakfast I noticed this lady say to the receptionist is that him. She then called me over to the desk and confronted me yet again about the hotels policy in providing a credit card swipe even presented me with the policy card. I will say that I was totally unimpressed with the way in which I was being dealt with and shown it, however at no point was I ever rude or use any inappropriate vocabulary. After telling the lady once again that I do not have a credit card therefor cannot supply one, I was then asked 'do you want me to call your company?' which I was quite happy for her to do so (which never happened). As we were at a stalemate situation I asked what is it you want me to do stay or leave, and the response was to leave. Many other hotels have the same policy however they do not discriminate or fail to understand that not everyone owns a credit card (especially as they already have credit card details from the booking company) and quite freely accept that I can pay anything over and above my allowance with cash either at the time or generally when booking out. Never have I experienced this in my life, absolutely deplorably handled.

I am truly sorry that we did not meet your expectations during your stay with us and please be assured that we will take all your comments on board to improve for the future.

Stayed at the Gables Saturday night its just off the M5 Motorway and easy to find , we were booked into the four poster room which was very spacious and spotless and modern , big TV on the wall at the foot of the bed, windows you can actually open , perfect ! Staff were fantastic and very friendly during our stay asked for two extra pillows , no problem . Breakfast in the morning was every thing you could wish for and we ate at the last half hour of service and everything was well stocked , think i had the best sausages ever ! The restaurant food was excellent and the service was on the ball. There was a good choice on the menu. Would recccomend it to any one and would certainly go out of my way to stay there. Celebrated my Mothers' 80th Birthday with family in The Berkeley Suite on Saturday. A well organised event thanks to Emma, nice room, lovely finger buffet and attentive staff. We stayed for two nights so that we can have a full day at WWT Slimbridge. The Gables is not only a conveniant distance to Slimbridge, but also the M5. The staff are their greatest asset, being friendly and helpful. Good food and nice rooms. We will return.

"Relaxing stay at The Gables"

5
21/01/2016

Having often visited WWT Slimbridge on day trips, we decided to stay somewhere nearby overnight so we could stay later at WWT and return the following morning, and to avoid the drive home in the dark. Best Western hotels have not disappointed in the past and The Gables was the obvious choice. There were plenty of parking spaces at the side and at the back of the hotel. We were greeted on arrival by a friendly and efficient receptionist. We were allocated a four-poster room, which was huge, had plenty of storage space and all the amenities that one would expect. Being able to make a hot cup of tea was very welcome on a cold evening. Our room at the back of the hotel was quiet, very clean and nice and warm. WiFi was quick to connect. The bed was comfortable and we slept very well. The bathroom included a jacuzzi bath with an overbath shower. There was a non-slip bath mat provided. We had already eaten, so couldn't manage a full meal, however we went to the bar for a drink and had a dessert which was delicious. We studied the menu and have decided next time we will have a meal there - there were a number of vegetarian options and there was also a pizza menu at the bar. The breakfast was self-service and there was a good choice of cold and cooked food, cereals, toast, fruit and yoghurts. The staff were very attentive in showing us to our table and quick to clear away used crockery etc. All in all, this was a great place to stay and we definitely intend to return!

it was a nice cosy room heating was very warm and food was exceptional good, there is no lift but it is only two floors. It has a nice bar area, but a bit expensive but very nice. its ok for children aswell the staff in resterant is very helpful. we found it very comfortable but the beds we had were twin and moved away from the wall a bit so that was a bit frustrating.

11/01/2016

Given the wrong type of room initially (having booked a King) right opposite a room with a crying/screaming baby. Reception quickly agreed to a change and to the correct sort of room. Staff at Dinner need to buck their ideas up - we were the first of three tables to be seated in a line; yet the second to have our orders taken; and the last to receive any food! All very apologetic, and the food was good, but they could/should have done much better. All staff very friendly and the hotel is comfortable and well placed. We had originally been booked in the Sunday after Christmas, but had needed to make a late change due to flooding, and Natalie in Reservations was very helpful and accommodating.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the feedback and very pleased to note that we were able to resolve the problems you encountered when you checked in quickly. We also take on board your comments regarding the restaurant. I will pass on your thanks to Natalie and we hope to see you again soon.

09/01/2016

Having stayed at the Gables ten times over the last year, I have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Some of the rooms are a little dated, however always clean and quiet. Plenty of food available in the breakfast buffet but towards the end of service some of it looks like it has been sat a while without refresh. On my last two visits the scheduled wake up call hasn't happened, so worth setting your own alarm just in case! Overall this hotel is pleasant and convenient for work and my first choice when I travel to this area. Doesn't feel luxurious and for that reason I wouldn't choose to stay for leisure.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review

We had a very enjoyable Christmas break. The food was excellent and so was the atmosphere. Staff extremely attentive and helpful from reception through to chamber maids. Well done for their cheerfulness for working over the Christmas period. The room was very clean and comfortable with everything we needed for our festive stay. This was just excellent from arriving to departing. Even had a great pre arrival email and the requests I asked for when booking were met in full. Spotless room and wonderful staff throughout the whole Hotel. Also great service in bar and first class breakfast. We left late on Boxing day morning but still plenty hot water. if anyone needs to stay locally to Tortworth/Almonsdbury or to stop over for a night on a long trip down to Devon & Cornwall, I can't recommend The Gables highly enough. Very convenient for the M5 motorway. Plenty of parking. Bar meals very good. Breakfast adequate with a reasonable buffet selection. Room was OK. Only poor point was the shower. Flow of water was a bit limited.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for the excellent 5 star review and we are all delighted you enjoyed your stay with us. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

"Business Visit"

3
15/12/2015

Visited in December for a business meeting. The staff are very pleasant and helpful (hence the 3 stars) but the facilities were average at best - especially the IT facilities in the Meeting Room. There was only just enough coffee to go around and the lunch was spartan; there seemed to be some confusion about what we had ordered. A previous visit in October was much better on the organisation and catering front, although the IT facilities were still not up to scratch. We use this venue fairly frequently for the convenience of its location; we may look further afield next time.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
I am very sorry to read that we fell short of your expectations for your recent conference and I would urge you to contact me directly to discuss your feedback in more detail.

OK hotel for a short stay but none of the rooms have facilities for people who cant get in a bath and no lifts to upstairs rooms. Food was good though even though it was busy in the bar and restaurant.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your comments following your recent stay with us. As we move forward with our refurbishment programme we will bear in mind the fact that we do not have a "wet room " facility at present. I was pleased to note that you enjoyed the food during your stay and hope to welcome you back in the future.

"Great Place for a Break of Journey"

23/11/2015

We chose this hotel as the price was very good (Winter Special Offer) and it was a good stopover on our way to South Wales. We were impressed with the quality of the hotel and friendliness of staff. Our room was a good size and well equipped. We stayed in the newer wing of the hotel and there were no squeaky floorboards to traverse, which we've often experienced in other hotels! The only negative was the noise of the room doors banging but I guess this is just because they're good fire doors, so it's not a complaint. We were very impressed with the breakfast in comparison to other Best Western hotels we've stayed in.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for the kind and positive comments in the review of your stay with us. We are all delighted you enjoyed your stay and thank you for the nice comments about breakfast. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

"A little disppointed"

4
13/11/2015

We looked forward to spending two nights in this externally attractive hotel but were a little disappointed with our room. It appeared quite tired and the bathroom was in need of updating. The shower over the bath was shielded by a plastic sheet not a modern screen. The room lighting was inadequate with a standard lamp in the corner and matching bedside lamps (all looked outdated rather than antique) and the low wattage bulbs meant trying to read in bed was an eye straining experience. Things did not improve once the lights were out and the traffic on the A38 adjoining the hotel reduced as we could hear a constant noise which was unpleasant. It sounded like air conditioning. The following day chatting to the bar manager I asked him about the noise. He immediately went to check and advised he had sorted it. Apparently it was coming from water in the radiator fast cycling due to an imbalance in the system in our and the adjoining rooms - I noted on our return to our room the heating was now on frost setting only but at least the noise had gone. The public rooms of the hotel are very pleasant and we enjoyed a good breakfast and also a snack in the bar area. The staff were very pleasant as well. Overall a nice hotel with rooms (or the one we occupied at least) in need up updating. I was lead to believe some had received improvement - clearly not No214

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
I am sorry that there were a few aspects of your stay that fell below your expectations and I hope that you will accept my sincere apologies. It is always our policy to encourage feedback from our guests as this allows us to identify areas for improvement for all our guests in the future. Please be assured that we will use your comments as we move forward with our refurbishment programme. I am pleased to note that you enjoyed the food and found the staff pleasant and I will share your comments with them.

Clean and tidy venue with attentive staff and very good lunch. the purpose of the stay was for the delivery of a two day training course. the room was spacious appropriately set up with equipment, a good experience for myself as the trainer and from feedback I received from the course delegates for them as well

On arrival the receptionist was lovely, really polite and helpful and the reception area was neat and appealing. Everything seemed clean and welcoming. I was offered help with my suitcase too, I declined I'm only one floor up and the stairs and nice and wide with big landings. My room whilst not overly spacious was clean, tidy and had nice decor with lovely soft lighting. I like that kind of lighting but I think if you were trying to work it may have been a bit of a challenge. The one thing that was a bit annoying was I couldn't turn the lights of from my bed - I had to get up to turn them off then walk back to my bed without falling over anything - but this was a tiny tiny gripe, no biggie. The en suite was clean and well stocked. The TV worked, I was offered an alarm call and a newspaper. The wi-fi is far superior to many hotels I've stayed in and you got a feeling that people actually cared for you and the hotel. The bed was no hypnos but it was comfortable enough and the room was a nice temperature for me. No air con but windows open a reasonable distance and the radiator was quick to respond if it got a bit chilly. The clothes storage was good and plentiful. Could have done with a plug socket by the bed for my phone to charge overnight but it was no great hardship to get up when my alarm went off in the morning and walk to the phone - actually woke me up better! I had a meal in the Berkley brasserie on night one which was an excellent steak, cooked very well and great portion sizes, the following night I had another meal there which again was a good size - they forgot the chilli dip that was advertised so the meal was a little dry but it was well cooked and tasty. If you're after a michelin star this isn't your place but the hygiene and portion sizes are good and what you do get is well cooked. The cheesecake was lovely and well presented. The service was great, very polite waitress and the right level of attention. Breakfast was good, a lot of choice, I went for healthier options but it all looked nice and people were enjoying it. I would stay here again and I would recommend it. Car parking is plentiful and not far from the hotel.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
What a lovely and comprehensive review, thank you. Excellent quality and customer service are so important to us and we were pleased to hear how much you enjoyed your stay with us. I will be sure to share all your kind comments with the Team here at The Gables. Thank you for your recommendation and we all hope you will be able to visit us again soon.

"Pleasant hotel in good location"

03/11/2015

We stayed at the Gables for a two nights break recently and couldn't really fault it. The room we had was large, well decorated and spotlessly clean, a contemporary bathroom with whirlpool bath, as well as shower. It had all you need including tea/coffee making facilities. We ate at their hotel both evenings as well as at breakfast. All our meals were hot, well cooked and tasted fine. Breakfast in particular was perfect for those with a big appetite. The bar was well stocked, comfortable and had 3 real ales. All the staff we met were really pleasant and helpful and happy to chat. It is located close to the M5 although we visited Bristol and the Cotswolds from there easily. We would happily stay there again and plan to do so when we visit Slimbridge.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
We are all so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us and thank you for the lovely review. Your kind comments and thanks will be shared with our team who will be delighted that you enjoyed your stay. "Murder Mystery"

01/11/2015

Visited as part of a group for the Murder Mystery night - because we'd not been to one before and with a subsidy provided by our club, extremely good value. The hotel is well placed for access to the M4/5 and appears pretty & well kept from the outside, good parking. Check in was efficent and the reception was clean. The room was ok - clean and everything worked. I did however feel that the furniture/decor was a little dated. The bathroom was clean and the shower was hot. The bar was well staffed and had 3 real ales on, at least one was local and all good. Our pre ordered 3 course meal was all well presented and hot - I didn't hear any complaints and the entertainment was quite well done, certainly made a change from the ordinary. I slept well, which may have been partly due to the beer but I did find the bed a little small (maybe I'm used to a double). Breakfast was good, the pork sausages are locally sourced and very tasty - no black pudding though!

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for posting a review of your experience at the Murder Mystery night and your overnight stay on Friday. We are so pleased you enjoyed the event and hope to see you again in the future.

"Good location for motorway"

26/10/2015

We stayed here one night which was enough. On arrival the receptionist was nice, we were allocated our room after we traveled down a few corridors that had very sqeaky floor boards we reached our room. The room was large enough but the decor was very dated and in dire need of a refurbishment. The pillows needed replaced as they stank. Breakfast was good but the staff could of been friendlier. I would be hard pushed to stay here again.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Firstly, thank you for taking the time to write a review, we appreciate all feedback and can often make positive changes based on recommendations from our guests. I can only apologise that your stay with us did not meet our usual high standards and that you left feeling dissatisfied.

"Tail of 2 halves lovely hotel room....worst food ever "

25/10/2015

Came here on a groupon deal with bristol zoo tickets.at first the visit sermed amazing:room was better than expected flat screen TV 4 poster bed and jacuzzi bath perfect.but as staying here on a Sunday we decided to eat in the restaurant as there is not many places to visit around here.bar looked good as did the menu so was feeling hopeful.problwm is had scallops to start but tasted just of burnt butter and needed more fresh lemon as the dressing was oily. The pulked pork hash was also dry. This could be forgiven until the mains arrived had roasted chicken breast with tarragon sauce the potatoes were gray (so old) and chicken bone dry. Also they served raw chicken to my partner. The food was appauling.....not looking forward to breakfast tomorrow morning. Slight saving grace the manager apologised. He was genuine and we appreciated it. we only paid for drinks so all food was removed from the bill. Such a shame and has left a bad taste in the mouth.worst food had in a hotel evet but nice room.so mixed reviews would stay here again.....but bring own food!

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
I am so sorry that we failed to deliver an enjoyable meal during your stay last night and I do hope that you found breakfast today a more positive experience.

"Reasonable food, hopeless service"

2
24/10/2015

There are certain basics you need to get right in this business. 29 minutes from arrival to glass of wine on table: hopeless. Opening the bottle of wine: nope, do it yourself. Asking how your meal is: wasn't even asked. Clearing plates: almost 20 minutes with dirty plates left on table. Fetching bill after saying you'd pay cash: 10 minutes. Could almost be forgiven if restaurant was busy but total headcount between 6 and 10 with 2 waiters "working". Staff need training, particularly in being attentive. Clearly they've taken no notice of other reviews criticising service. Most pub service and pub food better than this which is a shame as it's a nice location and could easily be much better by simply getting the basics right. Avoid

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
How do I begin to apologise for so many shortcomings during your meal with us. This is certainly not the standard we aim for and I would ask you to contact me to discuss the matter in more detail so we can use your feedback to improve for the future.

I met some friends here as part of a girlie weekend, it suited our needs very well, and was a very reasonable price, the staff were very friendly and helpful and our rooms very comfortable, the bathroom was small and needed updating.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Many thanks for the feedback following your girlie weekend and in particular the kind comments regarding the staff which we will share with them. We are currently refurbishing many of our bathrooms and hope to welcome you back in the future so you can see the difference for yourself.

"Brilliant hotel"

20/10/2015

We arrived after a long drive up from Cornwall, we were greeted by a very pleasant helpful young lady. We were upgraded to a suite which was amazing. The bar/lounge area had just been refurbished and it was lovely the locks dinning area was in the process of refurbishment. The breakfasts were great and the evening dinner menu was good and the food was great. We will definitely be returning here

"First stay at a Best Western"

5
17/10/2015

I visited this hotel while in the area for an event. I booked the hotel for the night before so I was well rested and that certainly was the case. I booked an executive double just for me, as I like to spoil myself on arriving at the hotel the receptionist was welcoming and very informative. My room was on the first floor, the corridor was very dimly lit so anyone with eyesight problems be warned. On entering my room I was really pleased to see that I had, had a room upgrade to a four poster bed room. All thanks to the Best Western membership card I applied for on booing my room. The room was amazing, it had a jacuzzi bath, Bluetooth docking station, freeview tv, bathrobe and slippers. The jacuzzi bath is lush I didn't want to get out, the hotel and the room is all well kept and clean. The bed was very comfortable, I had a very good nights sleep. The room has a radiator with a control to turn it up or down, just to make you aware it does warm up quick and the room holds the heat well. I ate in the Bar for dinner, the staff were friendly and attentive. The food is very reasonably priced for a hotel, I had a burger and chips with salad. The burger was a little tough which I passed onto the restaurant manager and he was happy to pass on my comments to the chef. On signing for the bill the gratuity is not automatically added in thankfully which is a lot nicer as it leaves you to give what you feel is adequate instead. I didn't have a pudding as this filled me nicely, on returning to my room I relaxed in bed and watched tv. The corridor was quite noisy thanks to inconsiderate guests but this is pot luck. In the morning I showered which was a little low powered but lovely and refreshing, a hair dryer is provided which I used and thankfully it's not one you have to keep your finger on. On entering the bar again downstairs for breakfast, I was shown to my table, the waitress brought me a pot of tea but the rest of the breakfast was self service, unless you wanted porridge. I stuck with a continental breakfast. On returning back to my room I gathered my items and checked out without an issue. The lovely receptionist even made sure I was ok with my bags even though I only had one overnight bag and a handbag. Lovely hotel, thoroughly enjoyed my one night stay and I would happily recommend the hotel to others. I wanted to stay two nights but on booking an executive double was only available for one night, never mind maybe next time I can indulge in the jacuzzi bath and comfortable bed a little longer!

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you so much for the lovely in depth 5 star review of your stay with us. We are delighted that you chose us as your first Best Western hotel and we look forward to welcoming you back in the future so we can spoil you once again.

"Disappointing"

1
15/10/2015

Disappointing room - bit of a mis-match with an 80s style pine 4-poster bedroom, but a super modern bathroom suite with whirlpool bath. Also, very, very cold. Had to ask for extra blankets twice! Very uncomfortable bed. Crippled by the morning! Awful food in restaurant, and poor service. Very slow and with argumentative staff. Took 50 minutes for meal to arrive, it was wrong, and raw in places, was charged for food I didn't have, then was told I did have it and had to pay! Took a little while and negotiating with three staff members to have it removed from the bill. Then it was back on the bill at check out! Room very close to the main road and not well insulated, so every single car, lorry, van that went past was very disturbing through the night. On the plus side, they let me check out a little later as I had a conference call. Poor value for money when compared to price / standards / service in many Premier Inns. Very disappointing.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to write a review as comments from our customers and guests are very important to us and can highlight weaknesses in our team, service or quality that we can then address and work on for the future. We are of course very disappointed to hear that your stay did not meet your expectations and most certainly did not meet the high standards that we all strive so hard to achieve here. I hope that my sincere apologies will go some way towards restoring your confidence in the fact that we do intend to use your feedback for the benefit of our guests in the future and please call me should you wish to discuss your observations further.

"Disappointed"

3
14/10/2015

The room was a bit tatty in places, especially the bathroom. The service in the restaurant for an evening meal was slow, a two course meal took two and a half hours. Food was not worth the money that was being charged. However, the choice at breakfast was good and the service better.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Firstly, please accept our apologies for the fact that your stay did not meet the very high standards that we set ourselves and pride ourselves on as you can see from other reviews on Trip Advisor. We will investigate these issues immediately and will of course work towards improving for the future.

"A real surprise"

10/10/2015

One night stay where the staff were very welcoming, polite and helpful. Food was good, room a little tired but clean and comfortable. Had dinner in the bar where once again staff were polite and helpful. Had a problem accessing internet but staff sorted the glitch very quickly, politely and helpfully. Would stay there again quite happily.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
We are so pleased to have been a nice surprise for you and thank you for the kind comments. We look forward to welcoming you back in the future.

"Another very pleasant stay"

07/10/2015

Our second time visiting the Gables for an overnight stay. As with the 1st time a nice room, excellent food and, with one minor exception, a very friendly team. Had a small issue with the service & attitude of a member of staff over dining, but this was dealt with by the management team to our satisfaction. If you are in the area and looking for a clean welcoming hotel with good food, then The Gables is worth adding to your list.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your kind and positive review following your second stay with us and I am so pleased we managed to resolve the small issue you had to you satisfaction. We do hope that you will use us again next time you are in the area.

"Excellent as always"

04/10/2015

I have stayed here a few times now and aways found the staff to be very polite and helpful. The food is excellent, however I am always torn between a great meal or reducing my waistline....meal always wins. Excellent location with easy access to Bristol. On this occansion I was here for pleasure not business after taking my daughter to Cardiff University and stopping off on the way back, not really the direct route but well worth the detour.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
It is always nice when our regular guests take the time to share a review with the Tripadvisor community and especially a 5 star one such as yours. Thank you for all the nice comments which we will share with the team and we look forward to many more visits in the future.

"a wonderful surprise"

5
04/10/2015

a little unprepossessing from the outside, and right on the A38, the bedroom was a little tired but very clean and comfortable. We received a lovely warm and friendly welcome at reception, and had a splendid meal in the brasserie. The hotel offered exceptional value for money and was superior to many other hotels we have used in the Bristol area.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the lovely review and the 5 star rating. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay and look forward to seeing you again in the future.

"Excellent Overnight Location"

4
23/09/2015

Stopped overnight following World Cup Rugby in Cardiff. The hotel is beautifully furnished and in excellent décor throughout. Arrived late and checked in. Bedrooms very comfortable and clean. Bathrooms well equipped; excellent décor and very clean. Beds very comfortable. Only negative was the lack of power from the shower. Breakfast good, although cooked supplies were running low - accept it was 09.30 but breakfast is served until 10am. Only other point, staff were slow at clearing dirty plates from the table. free Wi-Fi throughout and worked well. Check out was smooth and reception very pleasant. Located close to the M25, this is a very good hotel in close proximity to Bristol and will certainly be on our list for future leisure and business trips to Bristol and thee South West.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for the lovely review of your recent stay. While there are a number of points for us to work on following your feedback we are delighted to see that you will stay with us again when next in the area.

"Pleasant Hotel in a Great Location"

20/09/2015

We stayed here on a Friday night on the way to a holiday in Cornwall. It broke up the long drive and I was congratulated on my choice of stopover hotel. The rooms are fine, a little small perhaps but hey, if you are only sleeping here its great. Everything in the room was comfortable and worked well. The staff are friendly and efficient and the restaurant is very nice. The breakfast in particular was exceptionally nice and the staff so friendly and helpful. Would I stay again? You bet your life I would.

Andrew I, Manager at BEST WESTERN The Gables Hotel, responded to this review
What lovely comments and thank you for such a positive review. We look forward to being your regular stopover in the future en route to and from Cornwall.
