"Desperate need of renovation and new cleaners!"

User 06/01/2022

Disappointing and far from a 4 star! Our room was not to the cleaning standard you would expect (dirty mask behind the TV/ empty water bottle above the entrance cloack area/ terrible cleaning under the bed). The bathroom was in desperate need of refurbishment to say the least! The food in the restaurant is really not great. Overall not a great experience, I also don't understand the ratings!

"Over-rated and disappointing. Not a 4 star!"

hazmoon, Sierentz, France 02/01/2022

The rooms desperately need renovating. Our bathroom looked like a replica from the 1980s (no joke) and are nothing like the pictures we saw - they maybe have some nice rooms but that was not what we were given. The mattresses are terrible, as one sinks into them. The worst was the hotel restaurant - while the staff are very friendly, the food is very low quality (this is not an exaggeration) and not what you would expect in a 4 star. It was topped off by a new years eve menu, we paid 110 euros for and was definitely not worth it. One of us asked for a vegetarian meal and they removed the pate in the salad and left as is. No effort made, no attention to detail. Honestly it was very disappointing and I would not recommend this place and do not understand the high ratings

"Magical In Every Respect"

Jim W, Schonaich, Germany 13/12/2021

I was finally able to get my wife to a European Christmas Market. We missed last year due to COVID-19. However, our recent European vacation took us to four markets in three countries. We started out at the one at Ravenna Gorge and stayed at this hotel for two magical nights. The staff was wonderful. The shops were amazing. The glassblower was astounding. I can not say enough about how magical our stay was here as the snow fell down upon us at the gorge. The buffet breakfast was a great way to start of the morning with many choices of meats, cheese, yogurts, and jams. The rooms were quite comfortable despite having the infamous German gap in the middle. My only complaint was that the restaurant staff did not tell us the kitchen was closing. We ordered appetizers and though the waitress would come back to take our dinner order. When we flagged her down, she said the kitchen was closed and it was too late. She could tell we were disappointed so she more than made up for it by comping us to large cheese and fruit platters. So...turn the complaint into a compliment!

"Great location, friendly staff"

DavidZwolle, Zwolle, The Netherlands 03/08/2021

At our trip the HochSchwarzwald Card was included and great additional value! Very nice rooms, great beds, good food and friendly staff. Close to both the city of Freiburg and the black Forrest. We will definitely come back.

amit y, Munich, Germany 28/10/2020

Though the service in the restaurant is impeccable, the room service is below below avg. no attention to the detail. Stayed in Room 414 and the first thing i noticed was that the cleaning was not as per the standard of a 4 star hotel. The lady at the reception during check in was rude and behaving as if she was doing a favor for us. After our arrival she informed us that there are no places in the restaurant which is absurd and never heard that a hotel is not capable to serve their own guests. Even after that she didn't even offer a room service and we were forced to go outside the hotel after a long journey Service at the restaurant and at breakfast was very professional and polite. Hygiene was in the focus. Hotel service needs a massive improvement including the staff, cleaning standards & sttention to the details We paid 682€ for a tiny room -414 for 2 adults. The bed was so small that not even one night we were able to sleep properly. The remote control for the TV in the room looked like not been cleaned in 50 years. The whole set up in the bathroom doesn't make any sense. the bath fittings are wobbling and falling apart. there is not space to wash your face and hands as you have to put your head between the sink and the mirror. There was no water offered in the room. Even after being instructed to clean the room , it was not cleaned and we had to use the same towels from the floor. Apart from the hotel being in nature and in a nice location and a good experience in restaurant it is not something which is as per the standards of a 4 star hotel. Had better experiences in a bag packers than this hotel.

"Nice rooms, lacking service."

GillM496, Belgium 15/09/2020

Pluspunten · Clean and spacious rooms in a new building on the site, probably because we chose this type of room. Minpunten · We booked this hotel because they had two restaurants for dinner, since we planned to eat on the site this was ideal. Upon our arrival and we enquired about the restaurants they said one was closed and the other one was fully booked. They told us to go eat elsewhere, this was not an option for us as I don't want to eat dinner in full motorcycle gear. Take-away in their restaurant was not available and they would not help us. After putting pressure on the front office staff they agreed "by big exception" to prepare us a schnitzel which we could take to our room. IN NO WAY (we did not ask this) would they bring it to our room. We wanted to have a drink in the bar.... Nope also closed. Room cleanliness: There was lipstick on a glass which did not belong to us.

"Left earlier"

AvilaCassis, Cassis, France 20/08/2020

Inadequate level of service for a 4 star hotel and generally too many guests/ people around. Booked a table for dinner 5 days before arriving, got a table inside, not even by a window. Breakfast was very basic and very slow. Our rooms overlooked busy road and parking. Noises from corridor and upstairs rooms could be heard. We asked to leave a day earlier since this is not how we like to spend our holidays.

"Black Forest visit"

zipadeedoda, Murrells Inlet, South Carolina 15/03/2020

What a quaint piece of history this place is! We saw our first European snow and the mountains were awesome. The staff was accommodating and helpful, if a bit overwhelmed by our group. They were marvelous and it was a great ending to our Germany visit.

"Great place in the Black Forest "

Br0ganL, Perth, Australia 09/03/2020

Although our initial welcome at reception wasn't the friendliest once we got to our room it was very nice. We were located in the newest section so the building still smelt like new carpet. The breakfast was the best I've received in a hotel in Germany yet. Lactose free options, nice big pots for tea and lots of variety. Good location and a bit of history around the site. Restaurant was ok not a lot of choice on the menu but staff were friendly.

"Excellent hotel package stay"

Family112233, Bursins, Switzerland 16/02/2020

Took the package with travel agency, we returned to this hotel for the 3rd time. Everytime the room were in different, today we're in the newest building. Spacious room for 3, everything is new, very comfortable. Included breakfast & dinner + a card with lots of activities free of charge. Food is good, breakfast amazing, friendly staff everywhere. We're excited for the trip

"Jeff & Amy's Adventures "

Hawki64, Gainesville, Virginia 21/12/2019

Christmas Market stop over for 2 nights in the Black Forest with day trips to Strasbourg France and the story book country Liechtenstein. This quant little stop over complete with hotel and several other structures built to the exacting appearances of the previous “Toll Gate” town it was back in the day..... Hotel was beautiful, with beautiful wood finish with the awesome local fir. Rooms were roomy, bathroom was huge and we even had a balcony the overlooked a fast moving creek that rushed down the mountain.......great sound to sleep too had it not been winter. Make sure to visit the cellar bar and take in the original foundations...... an worthwhile site The hotel restaurant was well represented with good selection of local fare, I was actually in the mood for a steak even though I was in the Black Forest Germany.... my filet was from locally grazing free ranch cattle and it was tasty and expertly prepared On the grounds is a glass blower/shop and of course the famous and original Black Forest Coo Coo Clock s Shop They package and ship for a flat rate, of course we bought one...... Stick with the classics the modern ones lack the charm So this location is limited....good for a home base and day trips to surrounding cities This hotel, for its charm, on site services gets a Jeff & Amy's Adventures 5 Stars

"New building, but odd layout of the room"

Silvia R, San Diego, California 10/12/2019

This hotel area is so quaint, we were here during the Christmas market season. We stayed in the newest building on the top floor. The room itself was clean and a nice size. But the windows were slanted since they were in the roof. Just a little awkward and our view was basically the sky. The restaurant was nice the the marketplace with the buffet served good food and nice things to buy. We fell in love with the gnomes! Overall a really nice hotel, glad our tour group stayed here.

"Best Hotel ever!"

If you want to discover the Black Forrest it's amazing. The food is excellent and the staff friendly. It's perfect for any occasion business or family trip. I was also amazed by the effort they do to save the environment.

"Some good aspects, some bad ones"

Stevenfabio, Kiev, Ukraine 19/11/2019

I stayed in a studio room for seven days (room 503). The good aspects of the experience were: -The room was recently built, on top of the GlassHaus, so the design was modern and the room mostly clean; -The position was no further than a one hour drive from great spots in Switzerland, the Black Forest and France; -The nature around it looks good for hikes, although a lot of the paths are not well kept and hiking through them was pretty much impossible; -The reception staff is hospitable and kind, and they always tried to help us. Now with the bad parts: -The hotel is close to the highway, which has trucks going over it day and night. There is a constant high-pitched loud noise from these trucks. A sound barrier near the road would be a good idea. We had to sleep with ear plugs; -If you book a studio room, be prepared for the bathroom to have a glass door, no privacy. We went to the store and bought a curtain to cover it, since we prefer some privacy during some times; -Despite the room being modern and recently built, some minor details were off. For example, some hair was suck in the ceiling close to the bed, not ours for sure. The air conditioning always kept the room at 25 degrees no matter how low we set it, and the soap containers got stuck every time we pressed them; -There are so many bus tours coming to this hotel. Some of these tourists have no respect for the other people residing here. When we went to the souvenir shop, it suddenly got invaded by a tour of people who kept coming literally one centimeter close to me and wouldn't move, and took many pictures next to me. One day I was leaving by car and a tour of people was in the middle of the road doing nothing, as I approached, none moved for at least two minutes. I believe that this problem can be improved by giving people in tours some list of rules to abide by when staying here, since all the people traveling solo/couple/family never created a problem to us. Other notes: -Breakfast was fine, nothing special but acceptable for the money paid, since it's included; -Restaurant dinner was good, nothing special compared to other places in this region. So I'd give this hotel 2.5 stars and have to round it up to 3, since it has a lot of potential to improve and have a 5 star review, but I'd definitely not come back here in a future Black Forest visit.

Dear Stevenfabio, thank you very much, that we could welcome you at the Hotel Hofgut Sternen. We would also like to thank you for your praise. We're very sorry that you were not completely satisfied with the room. Of course, we could have changed the room, if there was an availability. You could have contacted the reception staff because of the glass door. They would have been very happy to help you to cover it. The cleanness of your room does absolutely not correspond to our standard. We would like to apologize to you and have already communicated this to our head of the housekeeping, who will train the team again. We are sorry, that the soap container and the air conditioning did not work properly. This has already been communicated to our facility manager. We are happy to welcome guests from all over the world and are happy to get in touch with guests from different cultures every day. However, we also know that the cultures are different and we will save your comments and forward them to the responsible person. The satisfaction of our guests is very important to us. We look forward to make you completely satisfied during your next stay at the Hotel Hofgut Sternen. Best regards from the beautiful Breitnau, Ronja Schuler and the Hotel Hofgut Sternen Team

"Average Hotel - Good Location With A Catch..."

rothert1989, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania 16/11/2019

We arrived at Hotel Hofgut Sternen after a traveling 8 hours from Berlin by train and car. We were tired and hungry. We realized that our plans to go to dinner in Freibug are now ruined because the highway to Freiburg was packed because of weekend traffic. We thought, now what do we do.....(more on this in a minute) We checked in and went to our room. It was in the main building and it was facing the back. It had a balcony, but we could not utilize that because of the person next to us. They seemed to be smoking every 5 mins so we had to constantly close our window and door (and not enjoy the back balcony). When this happened, the room became very warm. This is not the hotels fault, we just had an inconsiderate neighbor. Back to solving our dinner problem. It was later in the evening and we did not want to sit in traffic, so we decided to go to the hotel restaurant. This is where we met Pedro Alves our gracious server. Pedro made the evening get much better. He was such a fantastic host. He made recommendations, provided us a delicious meal and a very nice evening. Thank you Pedro for making our evening - stay awesome! More about the hotel: The hotel is in a good location. It is very close to Titsee and Freiburg. This is a great benefit of staying here. If you like hiking, there are many trails that come/go thru this area. Beautiful trails for serious hikers or just someone taking a casual stroll. The only catch is that it would be beneficial to have a car to travel to the nearby towns/villages. There may be public transportation, but since we had a car, I cannot comment on that. Breakfast was included in our stay. It is average. I would say that the people working there were not friendly. They also have some good shops to purchase amazing German made gifts. We purchased a cuckoo clock and beer stein. They handled the shipping which made it easy for the rest of our trip. They also have a glass blowing shop with some incredible items for sale. Do not miss their shops. This area attracts large tours. That can be good and bad. With us staying in October, we did not see the Christmas Village. However, we walked through were it is held and we imagined it could be incredible.

"Great location clean rooms."

Opi123, Tel Aviv, Israel 20/10/2019

The hotel location is closed to all Black Forest points of interest. Excellent front desk. Very helpful. The hotel has extremely clean rooms. Big windows. Comfortable beds and pillows. Will be back again.

"Uncomfortable room, bad service"

Zeev A, Rehovot, Israel 20/09/2019

A beautiful site with outstanding surroundings, in perfect location for touring south black forest (hoch schwarzwald). Breakfast was superb, with a wonderful buffet. A very good restaurant (quite expensive) . BUT – We booked some month in advance, 4 rooms for 6 nights, "Comfort" (better room than standard). The rooms were on top floar in "Goethehaus". I saw pictures of the room, and knew that it's rooms with sloping ceilings. It is a 4* hotel, so there is no excuse for the small and terrible rooms that we got – 1. The useful area in the room was much too small, and my wife had to bend when aproaching her bedside (unfortunately she hit her head to the wall/ceiling some times). 2. The entrance door to the room was much shorter than standard, so we had to bend when entering (unfortunately I hit my head to the door some times). 3. Bathroom was too small for a 4* hotel, with a minimal shelf for our items. We had to be very careful when sitting on the toilet. And more - bad maintenance, bad service – Hotel room must have curtains on the windows, to let privacy. There was no curtain in the bathroom. In the first night of our stay, I improvised a solution with a decorative fabric that covered the bed. this solution remained untouched for the 6 days of our stay. The service workers didn't pay any attention to that fact, doing nothing about it. Finally, I will not recommend this hotel, and especially the "goethehaus".

"Very nice stopover within the tour of the Black Forest region "

DeshmukhV, Sydney, Australia 01/08/2019

The Black Forest region in Germany is famous for the spectacular scenery. This beautiful hotel is at a convenient location from the highway. The rooms are fresh and clean with amazing views. The breakfast and dinner served was enjoyable.

"Disappointing experience"

Jyster, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg 07/07/2019

On arrival, the place looked nice and the dinner we had in the restaurant the first evening was good. The breakfast each day was outstanding too, which is why I give the hotel two stars instead of one. However, as it turns out the place thrives on shipping tourist buses in (mainly from Viking Cruises, twice a day) for their shops. The hotel seems to be an afterthought. We had a similar experience as Yelena U., the cooling system in the room only blew warm air around so we had the choice between trying to sleep in a warm and stuffy room or open the windows and invite the local insect population in... in spite of complaining each day, the hotel staff did nothing to remedy the situation, nor offer a solution such as a change of room or compensation. Very disappointing indeed. A place to be avoided.

"Fake AC, no fan, no fun to deal with front desk."

yelenau2014, Swampscott, Massachusetts 02/07/2019

We stay in this hotel during heat wave when temperature exceed 90 F. When we enter newly build building and saw AC type controls on the wall we got excited, unfortunately very little air was coming from unit and there was no way to change setting. When we talk to front desk they explain that it is not AC, but water based “environmental” way to cool air. The problem is it was doing nothing. We asked for a fan and was told they will “look for it”. Couple hours later no fan. The same lady at the desk said that they have no fan left and we do not need one, as it getting cool at night and we can open windows. She did not explain what we should do before it became cool, what to do with bugs and noise from major highway less than 50 yards from hotel. In general front desk attitude was that we have been a nuisance… BTW, all their shops had fans…. As it happened we stayed in other hotel w/o AC on this trip, but they immediately provide us with fans and was trying to make our stay as pleasant as they can.

"Typical Black Forest House"

Susanne412, Sandton, South Africa 07/03/2019

We enjoyed our stay. The rooms are big, the views are lovely, I had a step in my room to look outside the window, as this was situated quiet high. It was comfy and we missed nothing. But the bathrooms need in the near future a little modernisation, but it was clean an nothing broken, just a little old fashioned. The dinner and breakfast was great. Nice and friendly staff, good service.

"Lovely stay for half term skiing"

kathrynb243, Hucknall, United Kingdom 22/02/2019

We stayed at the Hofgut in the Goethehaus for the week. The room was large and very comfortable - perfect for a family of 4. Although it was just one room, there was plenty of space to relax of an evening. Breakfast had a huge continental selection, and something for everyone. We had the half board dinner which had slightly limited choices (as to be expected) but there was a 4 course meal every night and they were extremely accommodating to dietary needs - the salad buffet was delicious alternative if the salad starter had ham in. Children could select from children's menu and had a lovely range. But they could also have salad and soup if they wanted. Feldberg was a 20 min drive away for lovely skiing.

"Do Not Stay in the Goethehaus"

anonymous9257, Boston, Massachusetts 30/11/2018

I stayed here as part of a Gate 1 tour and I was sorely disappointed to be relegated to the "Guest House" building outside the main building. It was a tiny, dated room, but worst of all it was freezing. I tried adjusting both radiators and it did nothing to help the draft in the room. There is no top sheet on the bed, only a duvet that isn't even wide enough to cover the sides of the bed, so no effective seal to keep the warmth in once in bed. The safe inside the room was tiny and so far back in the wardrobe it was hard to reach. My iPad was too big for it. The phone is on the desk opposite the bed, so one must physically get out of bed to answer the wake up call, which is quite inconvenient. The restaurant food was poor as well. The included dinner had inedible meat and the service was incredibly slow. The entire meal took over 90 minutes as they waited such a long time in between courses to serve the next dish. The Black Forest cake was dry and obviously a store-bought creation. The breakfast buffet was sparse and not refilled when food was low. As we were in a group, we had assigned tables. There was no silverware left at any of our tables when I came to breakfast and the woman I asked about getting silverware was very rude. She said there was enough silverware for our group. Maybe there had been at one point, but there certainly wasn't any now. She walked off without helping me. Finally another waitress just told me to take a set off one of the other tour tables. Perhaps what happened to make our tables short as well? The grounds of the hotel are certainly picturesque and the giant Cuckoo Clock building is charming. I also enjoyed the Cuckoo demonstration offered to our group in the shop. The man leading it was very funny and engaging. Perhaps if I hadn't been stuck in a dismal and cramped freezer I would've enjoyed my stay more. The photos of the rooms in the main building look far more inviting that what I encountered, so don't stay in the Goethehaus "Guest House" is my main recommendation.

"Nature all around"

Frances L, Jersey 28/10/2018

A typical Black Forest chalet type hotel with two annex's.Comfortable and clean room and wet room. We had dinner at the hotel which was very edible and breakfast was the normal buffet style with either Continental or cooked dishes. We used the bar quite late in the evening but service was slightly slow. Nicely situated for treks into the forest. Cuckoo Clock shop nearby

Lena G, Assistenz der Geschäftsleitung at Best Western Hotel Hofgut Sternen, responded to this review
Dear Frances L., We are really glad to read that you had a pleasant stay in our hotel and that you especially enjoyed the clean rooms, the location and the food. Furthermore, we thank you for your comment about the service at the bar. We are looking forward to welcome you again at the Hofgut Sternen within your next visit of Breitnau. "Lovely and Charming Hotel"

770TraceyW, Canton of Zug, Switzerland 20/10/2018

Set in the heart of the black forest, it oozes charm to capture your heart. Love the hospitality, rooms, and delicious breakfast. It is also close to a nearby hiking trail to a waterfall in an area rich in history. Highly recommend this place!

"In the heart of the Black Forest"

Colbel, Oakville, Canada 06/10/2018

This hotel is beautiful with fabulous views. There is a historic railway bridge, a toll house and chapel on the grounds. At the end of one of the building is a huge coo coo clock. I had a large room with a bathtub it was simple and clean. The service in the bar was terrible we ordered 3 beers and waited 20 minutes and had to ask again and it took another 10 minutes.

"Lovely hotel"

Margaret P, Melbourne, Australia 12/09/2018

We only stayed one night on our tour at this hotel but it was the best one we stayed in. So quiet after city stays. It is like an old chalet but the rooms are lovely - ours had a small balcony although it overlooked the back of the hotel. Comfortable bed and coffee making in the room. Good breakfast and we had a buffet dinner for our tour group with lots of selections. It has a cuckoo clock and glass shops in the grounds.

"Family trip to black forest"

User 11/09/2018

We stayed in hotel for 6 nights on our trip to the black forest. The rooms are great - large, clean, warm and with nice view (at least the room we stayed). The hotel location (in the southern part of the black forest) is very good so it's a short time of driving to the main attractions. The breakfast is good and a nice dinner is served in the hotel restaurant (with fair price). The hotel stuff are very nice and the service is great! The hotel gives to the guests the "Forest Red card" so many attraction and sites provides free entrance. There is a free parking for the Hotel guests.

"Lovely stay need to update mattresses"

asia k, fairgield 11/09/2018

Stayed at the hotel for 2 nights. Location is great, breakfast buffet was abundant. Ate dinner on friday night was good. The room very spacious and clean. We went to a spa and recieved a bag with a bathroabe , towels and slippers to take with us The matresses however were not comfortable at all, I was turning and tossing all night. Enjoy

"Nice stay, tho a bit noisy"

JCnBoerne, Boerne, Texas 04/09/2018

We stayed here in May 2016. Yes, I'm 2 yrs late, but better late than never. I'm catching up on photos & need to finish this review. It was a very nice & enjoyable stay. The food was very good. We had room 201 that had a balcony & overlooked the front of the hotel. The only semi-negative comment I have is that because it was warm and they have no AC, we needed to keep the windows open. But the hotel is located off of, but facing the busy B31 thoroughfare, and the road noise was a little loud at times. At that time their internet was also very lousy. Otherwise we very much enjoyed our stay there. It was very handy to the Black Forest area.

"Clean, central and good value"

Roy W, Tel Aviv, Israel 28/08/2018

We spent 7 nights at the hotel and were happy with every aspect of it. The rooms were large and clean (though amenities were at the minimum). The food (breakfast buffet and dinner) were very good and well presented. Breakfast was a bit loud due to lots of kids. Location is good, enabling easy access to the entire south part of the region. Parking was free, Internet was good and stable.

"The staffs are very rude and mean. Worst stay."

Prosenjit K, Kolkata (Calcutta), India 26/08/2018

I stayed there for a single night and undoubtedly it was the worst stay during our entire stay in Germany with Globus tour. I stayed in the main building and the room was below average. The bedroom and bathroom was small. The view from the room was of a big size drainage pipe. There was no ac. Asked for fan, it was not available. The outside temperature was very hot making the stay very uncomfortable. The worst part was the behaviour of the hotel staff particularly those who are managing the breakfast area and dining area. The food items are kept at one room and dining area is at the other room. As I was travelling with Globus so we had our tables marked with Globus reserved. I was having my breakfast at one of those tables. But suddenly a waitress came and removed that reservation card and asked me to seat somewhere else. It was awful. And it was totally alright for her. When I told about this incident to the front desk, she nonchalantly said she was sorry to hear about it. I wonder how did this hotel manage to get the "Certificate of Excellence" badge from tripadvisor. I would definitely not recommend this hotel to anyone.

"Great location. Food great but pricey "

User 05/08/2018

Good location to reach any of the attractions in the Black Forest. Good atmosphere. Busses bringing tourist a bit annoying. Room was very nice. Highlight is the breakfast which has a great selection of fruit meats and fish.

"Unique old world feel"

Vivekrajanand, Bengaluru, India 04/08/2018

We had a nice lunch here, we wanted some authentic french cuisine and was able to get it here. We love the beef, the cheese and the wine. So it was great. Service was good but was delayed, we didn't mind though.

"Hot, no AC, no fan, not very accommodating staff"

User 03/08/2018

Every other hotel we stayed in that did not have AC, at minimum provided a fan or two. Asked the front desk for a fan - 3 times - and the same girl finally admitted they gave them all away already. Would have been better to be up front with me the first 2 times I asked. What really ruined the experience was her total lack of concern - essentially not her problem. Room is very basic - for this high price they can afford fans for every room.

"Immer gut bei Hofgut"

yngvez, Apt, France 20/07/2018

Diese Hoell ist eine meinen Favoriten auf den weg von Frankreich nach Skandinavien. Very conveniant from my home, some 7 hours drive.Restaurant is very good, the staff is excellent and sometimes I had the opportunity to make a good walk in the valley.

"Unique Charm and Character - BUT?"

Ron T, Booker Bay, Australia 17/07/2018

We stayed only one night in this hotel and found it a uniquely different accommodation. The hotel has great character and with extensive use of wood in the main building/dining/bar/reception has a feeling of warmth and old world charm. The location of the hotel in the Black Forest is ideal and suited our travel plans. Our room was nothing to talk about being quite small ( the bathroom was very compact - 1 person at a time) but we did have a walk in shower., which we appreciated. We were located in the white building, and we understand from other guests in the complex that there is a range of room sizes and relative appointments, like balconies and lounges in rooms etc depending on your luck. The room was clean, and the bathroom was modern having been renovated, but the headroom from the elevated shower floor was small for a person of 5ft 11ins. The bed was located under a sloping ceiling, reflecting the pitch of the external roof. One needed to be aware of the headroom over the bed. The breakfast was good with a wide range of choices. We dined in the hotel and had a very nice and well cooked three course meal. The staff were helpful and attentive but they seemed unprepared to accommodate the arrival of a Coach tour with the reception and bar staff ( one person each in reception and the Bar) taxed to meet demand. Our bags were delivered to the wrong room and the reception closed down between 9pm and 6am? Despite the rankings of previous reviewers we felt that, based on our short visit , this hotel fell short of our expectations but our views were not shared by other guests, who had different experiences.

"Lovely stay"

sightcr1, Galivants Ferry, South Carolina 10/07/2018

I stayed overnight at this hotel as part of a tour and hit the room jackpot - had a large 2 room suite with double balcony! We were in the Black Forest with historic buildings, but the autobahn was within sight! Upon arrival, Viking Cruises tour buses were leaving, so their group must have been there for the clockmaking demonstration. Many varieties of clocks for sale and glass items - must have a glass blowing demo, too. Quaint hotel - clean, comfortable, and enjoyable. Nice and quiet in the country.

"If you like old historic buildings and outdoors view this is the place for you"

User 09/07/2018

Went there during June 2018 with my wife and 2 small kids, had a lovely time. The hotel itself is an old building, but a very nice one. The breakfast was very good, with a wide variety of cheese, salads and pastries. Food wise the place was less "kids" friendly in breakfast since there was a very limited variety of cereals (3 types) but the food was very good so the kids managed all in all. The staff was friendly and welcoming. The place itself is in a great location if you like hiking. there is an exit to a track right beneath the hotel. Besides the whole place is like a living museum with all kinds of craftsman to see (glass/Cuckoo clocks) Geographically it is close to most of the attractions in the southern black forest. In short - Highly recommended for a black forest trip!

"Wonderful property"

preetiPune, Pune, India 16/06/2018

Its a beautiful property and it is surrounded by forests and gurgling brooks which you can view from your window. The famous Mary Antoinette has been a guest here on her way to marry King Louis XVI. The hotel has two buildings, we were put up in a relatively new building and that was disappointing. It had a fishy smell and the rooms were v small with low ceilings. The lifts were also v small. There were no staff around. The last floor rooms had a very low ceiling and u can hurt yourself if u r not careful. The bar was good but empty and we tried the Hugo, which was great. The dining hall was across the building and if its raining, it is inconvenient

"Great place to stay!"

helenkt313, Detroit, Michigan 11/06/2018

Rooms comfortable and spacious!. Attached restaurant has great service (and a really fun wait staff) They also have a little "village" around the hotel - the original gasthaus, a glass blowing place, and a cuckoo place (with a working glockenspiel). The scenery is great and there are walking trails complete with a babbling brook. Be advised that there is not a lot in the way of nightlife nearby, We went to Tittessee a few miles down the road and it buttons up very early - so its great that the hotel restaurant is so nice!

"Brilliant place, amazing crew and heavenly Location"

AlokMulye, Mumbai, India 15/05/2018

"Great hotel except room 427"

Norm J, Sydney, Canada 01/05/2018

It is a very nice hotel, unique in location and appearance. The food is excellent, well presented and delicious. It has an excellent hike behind the hotel along a small river through the Black Forest. If you want internet do not get room 427, it is in a dead zone for the wifi.

"Skiing weekend"

BalkanEnthusiast, Athens, Greece 07/01/2018

Found this hotel on as being close to Feldberg Ski resort and reasonably priced. It was an excellent choice. Quaint but comfortable in very interesting and beautiful surroundings (although to the cuckoo clock building looks slightly kitsch, but you're in the Black Forest). Was given a nice room in the Goethehaus, very clean and cosy. Only drawback was that the room was overheated, so had to shut down the radiators and sleep with the windows open. The restaurant is lovely and offers nice local food. Good breakfast choice as well. The staff is very polite and efficient. Would like to visit again.

"A wonderful property and excellent breakfast!!"

GirishSR, Brussels, Belgium 30/12/2017

We halted at this place prior to our onward journey to swiss. Wanted to see the cuckoo clock tower also, so a short detour was planned. On our arrival we were met by Felix and the checkin was prompt and we found our room to be in the annex in the building opposite. Room was clean and spotless. A window opened to the view of the restaurant and the bridge. Food was also exceptional quality and at the dinner we were hosted by the staff named lionass. Service was subtle and not too slow but well balanced. Now onto the best part. There was a lady playing harp in the restaurant during dinner. We were mesmerised. Sleep quality and bed was great. The only little problem was the heating was not predictable. Next day breakfast was again the highlight. With fresh jam and lots of variety. Dont miss the fresh jams available!! Checkout was smooth. And we proceeded with our onward journey thinking “how wonderful our stay was”. It was a white xmas like feeling and for a reasonably good price too. I leave out one star for the lack of menu options for vegetarians. G&S

"This little hotel is a treasure"

FergusMc, NC 27/12/2017

We stayed here with a group tour to see the Christmas Markets in surrounding cities and countries. Our room had a balcony right over the rushing creek beside the hotel - beautiful. The shops on the hotel grounds were lovely and the big clock on the one building was such a beautiful surprise! The only drawback was the service in the restaurant - they seemed totally unprepared for our group's visit so the service was not great. The food, however, for both breakfast and dinner was very good.

"Winter Vacation"

alexingohr, Dormagen, Germany 13/12/2017

In the hills, and December, next to the Christmas market. Great. And it snowed- a bonus. Wonderful, cosy ideal location. Better if you have car and the roads are clear?. The restaurant MUST booked otherwise no chance. Even though it was minus 7 outside we had a night with no heating.

"Best Western, it is simply the BEST !!"

Sivan R, Tel Aviv, Israel 11/10/2017

Let me tell you the bottom line - we absolutely loved this hotel !! Why? Modern and spacious rooms, comfortable beds, a large bathroom, an excellent location, a stunning view, a great service ...and the breakfast, wow the breakfast ...everything was so fresh and tasty, with a good variety as well. Another big plus is that they give the Hochschwarzwald Card which includes dozens attractions in the black forest for free !! We stayed there 8 nights (2 adults and 3 kids) in the family room, which is actually 2 huge rooms together, and loved every second ! Were so sad to leave. It was with no doubt one of the best hotels we have been in Europe, so don't think twice, just book it today !

"Nice base for visit to Black Forest"

nhdrjon, New Hampshire 11/10/2017

I was with a group tour so I have no idea of value but they were very accommodating and and it is lovely place. They provide a tablet in each room, but ours was inoperable and not replaced for two days, It is nice but the WiFi is very low band width and you will do better with a phone with data but even that requires careful location. It is in a deep valley. The site is a popular stop for tours like Viking which is how I first visited here about fours years ago. These tours fill teh shops but the eopel on it met were nice and I liked talkign to them. Breakfast buffet is very good as were dinners there but as part of tour I do not know cost. They did make a special arrangement because of a food problem I had and were very accommodating. teh place is clean and well located. The shops carry excellent quality items are fair but not bargain prices. The hotel is quiet at night but when large tour groups arrive a bit boisterous. Our room was large clean and well set up.

"A great place in the Middle of Nowear"

User 19/09/2017

You have to see this place to appreciate how nice this place is. The rooms are clean and roomy. The restaurant is clean and the food is very good. The only drawback is that it is really in the middle of no wear but the place was sold out the night we stayed their.

"excellent hotel black forest"

User 10/09/2017

a very picturesque place. the staff very friendly and attentive. beautiful walks to a water fall nearby. fairy tale countryside. the meals - we had a special menu as we were from Millers tour group. very tasty. breakfast was buffet style and a the choice was adequate . the rooms and bathrooms very specious and comfortable. altogether a delightful experience. would not hesitate to go back.

"Charming and picturesque"

Moonbeam59, Devonport, Australia 29/07/2017

This charming hotel was part of our tour through Germany and we loved the charm and style of the hotel. Our room was spacious, bed so comfy and bathroom hugh. We loved everything about this hotel right down to all the cuckoo clocks and window boxes covered with flowers. We had a lovely meal and the food was delicious and the Black Forest cake..... in a word YUM.

"Very pleasant stay"

Conor M, Brussels, Belgium 18/07/2017

We were a family of four, and we got a very nice room with two singles and a queen-sized bed. The room was very spacious and cozy. Furthermore, the bathroom was also very nice. The location was quite good. The road was good and it wasn't too long a drive to the nearby towns. The surroundings were magnificent too. Despite a huge bridge which the train went over every half hour, there was virtually no noise. We were also right next to two shops selling souvenirs. The service was good, all the staff were particularly friendly, especially in the dining room. The wifi, however, was quite poor and could barely be picked up. Food was of excellent quality, sometimes even too rich. Another huge plus is that the hotel provides you with a pass to get into local attractions free of charge.

"Surly unfriendly service in restaurant"

Simon M, Singapore, Singapore 13/07/2017

Stopped here for lunch whilst visiting the Ravenna viaduct close by. Place was almost empty but waiter ignored us when we entered and we had to find our own menus. Food was OK although service was surly throughout. There is very little competition in the area so they probably don't care. Only go there is you have to.

"A beautiful property in Black Forest"

wallacejain, New Delhi, India 07/07/2017

it is a perfect place to stay in Black Forest, a truly memorable stay with serene surrounding and equally wonderful stay with warm people. i would strongly recommend this place, whether travelling in a group or otherwise.

"Beautiful Inn"

grlnxtdor, Salt Lake City, Utah 28/06/2017

This hotel is at the bottom of a moutian pass. It is a historic set of buildings. And absolutely beautiful. Its is set in trees and the train runs behind on a high bridge. The room we were in was just right for us. The shower however i was not a fan of. I had the Nile river on the floor by the time I was done. The only negative is that there was a meeting being held in our building, and it was a rude wake up call when they were setting up pastries and such outside the door at 6am. With that said: Breakfast is wonderful. Lots of variety. Wish we could of had more time. I highly recommend it.

"Nice and clean in the heart of the nature"

mdse76, Istanbul, Turkey 23/05/2017

We were here as two families on May 20 for one night. The receptionists were very kind and helpful. Towels, bed covers, bathroom were all clean and new. The room had a balcony and two separate parts as a family suit. It eas wide enough. There was a kettle for coffee and tea. The restaurant was good, for lunch they served us a family plate good enough for 6_8 persons. It included meat, noodles, french fries and vegetables. It was delicious and cost effective. At the evening we had a birthday organisation for our daughter and they prepared us a nice table. Maybe the cheese cake and blackforest cake could be better. In the morning, buffet breakfast was maybe with the richest menu for the last three days of our hotels. And as a summary we were happy to be there.

"Wonderful stay"

Geanomo S, Brussels, Belgium 17/05/2017

Wonderful place in a green place Under the montains. Very typical construction at the border of the Black Forest. Very good foods in the restaurant in a montain atmosphere. Very kind workers. A deviation is recommended.

"A family holiday "

scheringin, zurich 24/04/2017

We bought a package holiday with half board for 4 nights. Reception was very friendly but they didn't give us our 'Hochschwarzwald Card' when we checked in although it was a part of our package deal. And I forgot to ask for it too. I did though the next morning and we got it. So people, do please check what's all included in your package and demand for it. Anyways, you are entitled to get it if you stay in this or one of the partner hotels for at least 2 nights. With this card, you get free entrances to many places nearby: a water park, indoor activity place, etc. We had a double room, number 107 with a sofa bed. The size of the room was great. A big plus point. We had a balcony with a view of the bridge. We didn't hear the train at all. The mattresses were sadly too soft and we woke up with a sore back the next morning. After the second night, we requested for a harder mattress to survive the upcoming two nights. The reception was kind to change our mattresses but it didn't help our backs. The wonderful breakfast cheered us up. They have a big choice of everything! The 4 course dinner was good. They were kind enough to give you another choice of soup or main course if you didn't happen to like what's on the set card. All the service people in the restaurant were nice and friendly! We were traveling with a dog. The hotel allows dogs (have to inform them in advance) but please pack enough poop bags. They don't have any! So be careful where you take a step in the grass. There are three souvenir shops in the hotels area. There's also a buffet restaurant under one of these shops. Also tasted good. But there wasn't any small shop that sells bottled water or snacks. Oh, we liked the coffee/tea making facility in the room very much. We took long walks right from the hotel. The big city Freiburg wasn't far away at all. All in all a nice, memorable holiday. But won't come again because of the poor mattresses.

"Charming Black Forest Lodging"

Susie1028, San Diego, California 06/04/2017

This property is located in Germany's Black Forest. Although it is located alongside a major road, it is otherwise surrounded by countryside. It is a beautiful place! The building is classic Black Forest-style wood lodging with several annexes. The rooms are large feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and coffeemakers. The beds were comfortable and the bathrooms were recently renovated. Breakfast is complimentary. There is a casual restaurant that serves regional specialties, as well as a buffet eatery with a beer garden. Other amenities include shopping, as well as glass blowing and cuckoo clock workshops. There are a few options for hiking trails and a church on site.

"A cozy place to stay amidst the Black Forest"

Arnav B, Assam, India 23/03/2017

Me and my wife were travelling through the Black forest and got a chance to stay in this cute, little, cozy place. Surrounded by the black forest this hotel is located just beside the highway. The hotel was built of wood and our room gave us a feeling of staying in a traditional German house. We got to stay on the corner most room at the top floor. The room was clean with all the amenities. The bathroom was big enough with a changing room too. I loved the view from the bathroom as I could see the forest with the railway line just above the trees. Only issue was the WIFI connectivity in my room. The bar was well stocked and one should definitely try the black forest cake in the cafe. The 3 course traditional dinner with some local wine was a bliss for us. One should not miss the souvenir shop right in front of the hotel. The shop not only sells the traditional cuckoo clocks but also gives a demo of how it is made and how it works. If you buy one the shop can send it anywhere in the world. Also, one can grab some local liqueur of different flavors form here. The hotel is best to relax in a calm and fresh environment.

"Good value package, my room was clean but much older than on the websit"

Family112233, Switzerland 03/03/2017

Had purchased a package via a travel agency with very interesting offer with this "Hochschwarzwald card", including lots of activities, free rental cross country ski equipment, free use of ski lift, adventure land for the kids & adult, the big pool in the closed by city The hotel was very attractive combined by 2 buildings for rooms & there are another 2 buildings as shops Friendly staffs The rooms were old but clean, we were disappointed that it wasn't what I saw on the website, a bit feeling being cheated. My family member's room had lots of flies... more than 20 around the lamp & next to the window, not very nice experience. Room was very warm & bed was comfortable. My son's bed in my room was not set up & the telephone was in German, I couldn't manage to call to the reception, so had to walk back to the main building, frustrated about the back & forth walk, the receptionist also forgot to give us the "card" for the activities Breakfast buffet was excellent, lots of choices sweet & salty & freshly baked bread Dinner was set menu by the package & it was delicious Besides the check in procedures, the rest of the stay was good

"Delightful setting in the Black Forest"

Laura M, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 17/01/2017

We were fortunate to arrive on the first weekend of Advent, as there is a beautiful Christmas Market behind the hotel in the woods. It only occurs on the first three weekends of Advent. The hotel was clean and fairly rustic, which only added to the charm. I would definitely return in any season!

"Lovely area of the Black Forest"

houstontravelingfool, houston 30/12/2016

Although we didn't actually stay in the hotel, we did have hot chocolate in the cafe. This was an excursion on our River cruise, with a demonstration for the cuckoo clocks, the glass blowing and making a Black Forest cake. All were interesting and seemingly well received.

"Perfection - this is not a 3 star hotel!"

Rossmack, Luxembourg 05/11/2016

Will keep this brief. Wonderful weekend, pics attached. I truly loved the warm, friendly, welcoming staff. Breakfast was truly five-star. Location :) - check the pics. The most beautiful 'back-garden' ( nature's own). Ultra comfortable beds and pillows. Plus I do not think I have ever had such good quality for price. Cannot be faulted.

"wonderful hotel, with great rooms, great breakfast and beautiful surroundings"

989arielah, Tel Aviv District, Israel 26/10/2016

We stayed in this hotel for 7 nights in September and overall we enjoyed it very much. The room was very big and comfortable, breakfast was rich and tasty and near the hotel there are beautiful walking trails. The only issues we had is that we wanted a bath (some of the rooms have baths and some don't) but because the hotel was full they could not move us to such a room, and although we wanted to open the window in the room to let fresh air in we could not because all the smoke from guests downstairs that were smoking was entering the room.

"Nice quite hotel with its own attraction"

User 26/10/2016

Located deep in black forrest, it offers little bit of everything. We could make a quick hiking up the mountain where you can find small bridges over brook and waterfall (a small one, but intersting enough for kids) It has three small shops with interesting local clocks and glassworks in front of the hotel. The restaurant served also nice food. I can only recommend for family travellers looking for relaxing trip. But if you do not have a car or looking for nightlife... It is wrong place to go..

"nice and charming hotel"

Rishy L, Mauritius 17/10/2016

situated in the black forest a small and charming hotel with a nice flowers on each balcony. nice staff. comfortable beds with spacious rooms. nice food in the restaurant. With the railtrack at the back of the hotel sometime nice to hear the train going by otherwise quite a calm and cosy place. a must is the visit to the cuckoo shop with the big cuckoo the size of the shop. some good nice souvenir shopping.

"Deep in the black forest, a place for rest and appreciate gastronomy."

Steve H, Meix-devant-Virton, Belgium 02/10/2016

We chose this hotel, for a night between two days of hiking in the Black Forest. The place is quite magical, in the middle of a wooded valley. Many hiking trail pass through this place. The reception was very warm, we slept very well and eat well also, whether for dinner or for breakfast. I recommend this palce. The staff is very friendly, the infrastructure is modern, clean... I'm looking forward to come back again with my wife Feel free to contact me if you want more information.

"Charming Hotel in the Black Forest"

gvaldeg1, Phoenix 30/09/2016

This hotel is fantastic! Located in one of the most breathtaking spots in the Black Forest this is a travelers dream. The rooms are great, the breakfasts are wonderful and the location couldn't be better. If you're going to be there for 2 days or more, they give you a Black forest booklet that is loaded with freebies and discounts. It even includes free ski lifts and cable cars. We were absolutely delighted with the place and consider it a "don't miss" if you're traveling to Bavaria.

"Germany in 11 days"

msalice72, Hillsboro 20/09/2016

This hotel is updated, room 404 is large and has all the comforts you could ask for as an American traveler. 2 rooms, shower (not bath tub), power outlets in bathroom, comfortable bedding and extra blankets, English channels on TV. The Windows open and you can hear the train whispering by. The hotel restaurant is good with friendly staff - sometimes rare in Germany.

"Late Summer Holiday"

Simon H, Horsham, United Kingdom 20/09/2016

We stayed here for 4 nights at the start of September. Our online booking (via e-mail with the hotel direct) went very smoothly and as requested, following tips on TA, we were allocated two adjacent bedrooms with balcony facing up the gorge with fantastic views. All the staff were very helpful and, unlike many places, let us persist in practicing our spoken German! The restaurant is lovely and served super 4 course dinners every night; the breakfast buffet was extensive and very tasty as well. The hotel is set in a touristy complex which can get fairly busy with coach trippers during the day but this did not affect us as we were out and about every day; by the time we returned (1600ish) most visitors had gone and we had time to explore the shops in relative peace and quiet. The walk up the gorge is well worth doing; it is very beautiful - do keep going until you find a house serving drinks and snacks!! Car parking is available free for hotel guests, it is behind a barrier which your room key opens. There is short term parking close to reception for loading/unloading. Cannot recommend highly enough; I'm sure we will return!

"Wonderful hotel..highly recommended"

jordan_eye, Amman 17/09/2016

We spent two nights at this hotel. Since we were a family of four we booked a family appartment that had two rooms. It suited us very well. The view was lovely and the room was very clean and pleasant. The staff was professional and very helpful. The breakfast area was lovely and organized. I enjoyed my stay very much and highly recommend this place.

"Pleasant stay"

Yoni M, Rishon Le Zion, HaMerkaz, Israel 01/09/2016

The hotel location is excellent and central close to titisee and frieburg , the place is quite and surrounded by a waterfall and revennashucht , there is a nice restaurant in the main building.and all the private area called hofgut stern is very nice and clean. Will definitely recommend you to stay here

"Amazing location!!!"

Nicus09, London, United Kingdom 30/08/2016

If you want to have a good bite of fresh air this is the place to stay. It is very very busy but with a prior reservation you can make it. I've stayed in main hotel, view at the front with loads of trees. I do Recommend! Excellent service , very helpfull staff.

helgakash, Mukilteo, Washington 23/08/2016

Visited the hotel on the back roads in the Black Forest. The driving directions were not very clear in their ad for the hotel, nor was there any advertising on the road. Once I got there, the hotel was lovely. The room was like a Jr. Suite with a big balcony. Had lunch in the hotel and the next day a very good breakfast buffet. Left the next morning on my way to Baden-Baden.

"Good for some perhaps but not for me - terrible location and awful single room"

Ruffin55, England, United Kingdom 23/08/2016

I was seduced by TripAdvisor reviews into booking two single rooms here on a walking holiday in the Black Forest My first mistake was not checking the location on a map. Breitnau is a quiet village set in rolling meadows but this is not in Breitnau village. It's actually in the middle of nowhere right next to highway 66. So if you want to step outside or open your window there is the constant roar of traffic from this extremely busy highway. And if you want to explore the walking tracks that surround the hotel you have to walk a good distance to get away from the din. My second mistake was relying on the hotel photos to get a sense of the rooms and not checking the travellers photos. I assume that some of the rooms are nice but mine - single room 425 in the annex - most definitely was not. Check out my photos and the photos from a previous disgruntled traveller who had been given the same room. It's a small attic room with very basic furnishing squeezed in a corner behind the lift, so the box around the lift takes up 20% of the floor space. The room has a small window so it's dark and overlooks the car park and highway. And don't even think of opening it - it's 50metres away from the highway and because it's high up you have an unrestricted view of the traffic! The hotel itself is an adequate tourist hotel. The breakfast room was so busy and understaffed on the first morning it took us 15 minutes to get coffee ( the waitress took our order and then forgot us). Other reviewers seem to like the restaurant but I thought it was an uninspiring, bog-standard tourist restaurant - over-priced, ornately presented not particularly well cooked food. But, because you're in the middle of nowhere there are no alternatives unless you want to drive. On the plus side the rooms have good double glazing so the soundproofing copes with the traffic noise. The buildings themselves are old and interesting and there are various tourist attractions - such as glass-blowing and shops - on site, if that's what you want.

"Over-night stay"

Phil D, Colchester, United Kingdom 08/08/2016

My family and I made our second over-night stay at this hotel. (on request of our 13yr old son). The hotel provided us with a family suite. The rooms had recently been refurbished and where very clean on arrival. Must admit this is possibly the best family suite we have stayed in, particularly in consideration of the cost. Hotel provided a crib for our 1yr old at no extra cost and was decent crib not a travel cot a lot of hotels provide.

"Awesome location"

Richard-Roadman, Heerhugowaard, The Netherlands 03/08/2016

Oke, the hotel was great; good room (free upgrade; always good...) very friendly staff and breakfast was also good. But what really makes this hotel outstanding is the location "in the middle of nowhere" and the history it has. There is a glassblowing studio, souvenir shop outside restaurant, besides the one for eveningdinner in the hotel. But there are also some very recommended walks to some historic buildings nearby. And the one is a walk past the nice railwayviaduct into the woods along the creek. I followed it to the little waterfall, but i'm sure there is more nice walking after that. So when booked for this hotel be sure you have some time to spend around.

"Pleasant and quite location, good service and rich breakfast"

User 31/07/2016

We've stayed at the Gothic section of the hotel even though we thought we'll get a family room in the newer section... nevertheless, we've had a very nice stay, there's a wide parking lot, very good restaurant (we've tried it for both dinner and breakfast), attractions like a big kuku clock and glass artist, and the nature is all around this place... The hotel's location is relatively isolated, which makes it a very good choice for some quite and nature, but it adds up some ~15 minutes for every ride you take, a thing to consider. For us it fitted very well and we've enjoyed our stay with two small kids and I recommend to take advantage of the rich breakfast they serve each morning.

"Cozy with gorgeous views in a picture perfect setting."

MichaelHM, Ottawa, Canada 22/07/2016

We were met by the host in a very hospitable way. The Hotel is surrounded by clockshops and it is constructed in the best tradition of the Black Forest(Schwartzwald). Our room was roomy, very clean and had all the amenities that reasonable people need. The beds were very comfortable and we had an excellent night's rest. There is a very good restaurant with a side dish of the best Pfifferlinge (Chanterrelles) that I have consumed in a long time. Our waiter was a very knowledgable gentleman from Portugal whose skill and humour were extraordinary. We really enjoyed our Dinner on the patio and also enjoyed a recommended Port wine which was excellent at the end of the meal. Very nice indeed. In the morning we met the owner while having breakfast who again impressed us with her very capable management of the Buffet which was one of the best that we have ever had. On checking out we were impressed again by Frau Susann Preller who took it upon herslf to assist us in securing our next accommodation request for the next stop on our trip in Bremerhaven. After having enjoyed two great stays at Best Western we chose Best Western again. Frau Preller was courteous, friendly and we cannot be more positive about our experience there. By the way, enjoy the shopping if you like cuckoo clocks and other Black Forest paraphanelia including blown glass etc. We really would like to come back to this venue another time.

"BW Hotel with Local Feel"

David W, Stuttgart, Germany 18/07/2016

Comfortable rooms with personable staff. Shops on campus had hand-made items on display and for sale. Great starting point for hiking in the Schwarzwald. Restaurant food flavorful with selection of both meat and fish. Will definitely return.

"Still a treat"

NASAEd, Lompoc, California 15/07/2016

This was our third trip-- the last was 10 years ago. There have been some very interesting changes. The hotel is still the same but has been renovated and updated--rooms are large, beds are comfortable, and baths are clean, tiled and with both good temperature and pressure in the showers. The restaurant meals are reasonable and tasty, and very good! Breakfast is included and has extensive selections.. We had room 109 which is just in front of the elevator which I thought might be a problem but we could not hear it at all.Since last we were there, they have added two buildings to the complex, in addition to the previous souvenir and small crafts shop. They are a glassblowers shop and a "Made in Germany" store. A very worthwhile place to stop when touring the Black Forest!

"Superb hotel in Black Forest"

Kate M, Toronto, Canada 15/07/2016

Stayed here with a tour and after the horrors of the Holiday Inn South in Munich, what a fantastic place. The setting is mind boggling and the buildings are beautiful. I had a room in the modern glass blowers house which was more like a loft. Huge room, closets, a big desk area, sitting area, twin beds. Big bathroom with a walk in shower and towel warmer. Really well designed room. There were bathrobes and even face cloths which are a rarity in Germany. There is a complimentary bottle of their own spring water. The dinner and breakfast buffets were great, lots of selection and friendly staff. The road down to the hotel is a bit unnerving with hairpin turns and must be tricky in the winter. There's a busy road outside the hotel but I didn't hear any traffic noise. The main part of the hotel is an old time chalet style. There are 2 or 3 other buildings, one of which has a huge sized cuckoo clock on the outside. Unfortunately we left too early in the morning to visit the glass blowers shop but the items in the windows looked beautiful. If you are in the Black Forest, stay here.

"Great traditional german lunch"

hanhsiangwong, Singapore, Singapore 11/06/2016

Simple, wide range of german food in the house. I was told by one of our german friends that it is a great place to have meal in. They served traditional german meal here and their portion was great too. It was too much that we had to skip our dessert.

"Beautiful location - Nice Size Room - Excellent restaurant!"

Julia G, Island Lake, Illinois 05/06/2016

This hotel was a very unexpected surprise. Located in a picturesque part of the Black Forest area, hiking is an option as well as shopping in some of the unique shops on the site. It had been raining off an on during our short stay, so we could not hike as we had wanted, but we were able to sit out on our balcony and sip wine as we looked out onto the beautiful scenery. The natural mineral water right out of the tap was addictive! The food at the restaurant within the hotel was fresh and very tasty (we had both dinner and breakfast at the restaurant). The staff were also very friendly.

"Excellent Excellent Excellent hotel in the Black Forest"

ganot, israel 28/05/2016

My wife and I were staying at the hotel for 4 nights in may/2016 on our trip to the spectacular Black Forest. Amazing hotel, amazing structure (our room was in the main building), Despite the hotel's proximity to the highway, you do not hear the cars who use it. Incredibly friendly staff both the reception and the restaurant, clean rooms good breakfast and free parking. Sleep quality excellent. Excellent location. A perfect trip in the Black Forest

"Most lovely hotel, Excellent location"

"Lovely room, huge"

Peter0101_12, Luton, United Kingdom 25/05/2016

We had a family room, very large and comfortable, good wifi and air conditioning. Tea and coffee and free "gummy sheep" each day. Nice quiet location despite close proximity to major road. Evening meals and breakfast were good too on the half board rate.

"Lovely Property"

vrichita, Muscat, Oman 18/05/2016

Had booked this property due to recommendations from friends. Truly it was amazing...The location & wooden structure amazed me. Very cosy. The staff is very good and co-operative. There was a small problem from their side with our booking. .but very tactfully handed by the on duty staff. They have a restaurant that serves lovely delicious menu. We had noodles baked with black forest cheese.. We would love rorevisit this property again. Would recommend this.

"Model train scenery"

edgar_was_here, The Netherlands 15/05/2016

This hotel and its near surroundings feature some very typical German 'Mittelgebirge' elements, like a railway viaduct (which runs high above the hotel), a mountain pass (with many hairpin bends), forested slopes (which form a narrow gorge with a mountain stream including waterfalls) and cute, wooden Schwarzwald houses (including the hotel itself). It reminded me of a little model train scenery, which I played with when I was a small boy!

"Still Paradise in Schwarzwald"

Mark S, Brussels, Belgium 06/05/2016

We stayed again in the Black Forest and the service, accommodations, food, and surroundings were superb. I recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a totally modern Gasthaus experience in the Black Forest.

Jmary633, Queensland, Australia 03/05/2016

Stayed only the one night but very comfortable room. Peaceful rural setting. Older hotel but well maintained and clean. Rooms were huge with sitting area as well. Restaurant on site with good meals and breakfast buffet included in room price. Close to Lake Titisee but without the crowds. Staff very friendly.

"Nice hotel good for starting point for the black forest"

BALDWIN2, TEL-AVIV 29/04/2016

We came with friends to tour the forest. We found this place very convenient and hospitable, They also have a restaurant which saves going out and searching as there are not too many and with rain and snow it is not advisable to go out.Food and breakfast are nice.

"Truly a fairly tale setting!"

Karen H, Newton, Iowa 11/01/2016

We were traveling with a group of 30 and everyone was commenting about the charm of the hotel. We arrived late and had to leave again by 9:00 a.m. so we did not get a lot of quality time at the hotel. Our room was charming with a slanted roof and and a big window. There was plenty of space and there was a large bathroom with a hair dryer. Our evening meal was delicious and served quickly to our group. The morning breakfast buffet was outstanding! I would highly recommend this hotel to families or large groups. It was truly charming and the staff was excellent.

"Paradise in Schwarzwald"

Mark S, Brussels, Belgium 02/11/2015

Lovely hotel in Black Forest; rural setting with breathtaking beauty. We were upgraded at check-in to a suite: very nice new suite in a very established family run resort. Service was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Food in the restaurant was truly outstanding; breakfast was pretty busy--arrive early for the best selection of food. Dinner in the restaurant was delicious German fare, cooked with local fresh ingredients: beer & wine selections were plentiful and superb. Excellent glass blowing shop, souvenirs & clocks available on-site. I look forward to staying here again soon.

"Fairy tale Location"

Mariabilly, Gloucester, Massachusetts 28/10/2015

Stayed in the Glasshouse suite 505 that overlooks the cuckoo clock. No worries because it's silenced during the night. The room was bright, large, comfortable and clean. We had half board included in our room which was an autumn special with a candlelight dinner and a fondue dinner. The server spoke English and was accommodating in every way. Breakfast was excellent. It's a great location, close to many attractions. Our package included a special card that gave us access to boat rides, coaster rides, museums, cable cars and sky lifts. Perfect.

"Excellent Stay"

Pete L, Bradford West Gwillimbury, Canada 16/10/2015

What a quaint hotel, in a spectacular location. The hotel provided us with an attractions card, what was most useful for us was the free train ride into Freiburg. The rooms were clean, the restaurant excellent, the staff very friendly. The only fly in the ointment is being charged for a glass of tap water at dinner, with no indication in the menu that this was so. We we would stay there again.

"high standards"

erkaIsrael, israel 01/10/2015

Spent 4 nights with my family there, location - great, near nature, in the middle of the black forest, near attractions but not in the "tourists" mess aera, very nice breakfast, very good food in the restaurant for dinners, welcoming service, the room for 4 guests is very large. one thing may need improvment - wi-fi in the rooms is very very poor.

"Poor Standard - Not A Best Western Standard"

Aussie2424, Sydney, Australia 01/09/2015

Tiny, tiny room with very steep slanting walls so you could not sit up in bed or watch TV - couldn't even move TV to an angle to watch it. Tea/coffee making facilities were in wardrobe and too difficult to pull out (I had to give up) - table in room was under very steep slanting wall - so easy to hit your head! Not a very comfortable bed (I am not talking about the size - I am referring to the actual mattress). Bathroom very outdated. Tiny, tiny bathtub that is useless as a bathtub, and hard to step up and into. Bathtub / shower floor was extremely slippery - I had to put a towel on the floor whilst I showered so as to not slip (first time I've ever done that). When I went to have a shower at night I noticed there was NO SHOWER GEL in the shower. So I called reception and a guy from reception came up and handed me the shower gel. When I said I hoped I could figure how to get it in the holder he got the hint that he should do it - he struggled a fair bit for a while but got it in. Food in restaurant was good - only thing good about this hotel. Free wifi only in some hotel rooms. This is the only Best Western hotel I have ever stayed in that is very below standard for a Best Western - I would never stay there again. Stayed at this hotel on an upmarket bus tour - room was below standard for a Best Western and very tiny; I wouldn't recommend this hotel based on my experience.

"Lovely village"

Bobby L, Boone, North Carolina 19/07/2015

We didn't stay in the hotel, but visited the small village on a tour. It is a beautiful building in a beautiful setting, nestled in the Black Forest. There are wonderful hiking trails for short or long walks. The Black Forest Cherry Cake demonstration was interesting and the taste test was wonderful! The Cuckoo clock store was a sight to behold. Didn't have time to go to the glass blowing shop but from the outside, looked lovely.

"Nice hotel, grat location, excellent for family "

User 13/07/2015

We spend a week in this hotel . Room's are basic and clean + very good breakfast. service is very nice. Excellent location for visiting this area. I definitely recommend this hotel. It is important to get the red card of the Black Forest, provides a lot of attractions.

"Mystical beauty in the Black Forest . . ."

TomRossAtlanta, Atlanta 13/07/2015

We visited, but didn't stay in the hotel. With low hanging clouds in the area the day we were there, the setting was absolutely beautiful, like something you might find painted in a German story book. We ate a delicious meal in the restaurant and enjoyed authentic Black Forest Cake. And . . . the service was warm and friendly. We actually made the trip to see and visit other facilities on the property. There is a glass blowing shop with many beautiful gifts you can take home. And . . . there is an amazing cuckoo clock shop where you can see how they are made. My wife fell in love with one these clocks and we are now waiting for it to arrive. If you are visiting or simply passing through the Black Forest, it is my opinion that you will find this a worthwhile place to stay overnight or just explore.
