"Accused of smoking in the room"

1
User 06/11/2019

me and my partner stayed at your hotel last weekend and it was absolutely lovely. The room was so spacious, clean and well decorated. The breakfast was lovely and the outdoor pool was also a joy. The staff were very friendly. However the next morning when we went to checkout the lady at the desk quite bluntly and rudely said ‘we've been told you've been smoking in your room, house keeping' me and my partner were very very shocked and said we've never smoked in our lives let alone smoking in the room. We had gone for a nice dinner and come back by 10pm. However the lady choose to ignore us and continued to tell us about the rules and regulations of the hotel and smoking. We told the lady again that she was very incorrect and extremely rude to us. She then spoke to the manager and came back over to tell us not to worry it's a mistake. At this point our whole weekend staying their was ruined. We didn't even receive an apology for the false allegations. My partner works as a fitness coach in one of the biggest gyms in Dorset and I myself work in the hospital pharmacy. We were both looking forward to telling our clients/patients about our experience, however now it unfortunately will be a negative one.

We really enjoyed our stay - good value for money. Location is good, staff are friendly and room was spacious and clean. Car parking is relatively expensive, but we couldn't find it cheaper (or more convenient elsewhere). Breakfast was tasty and in good supply (our 2 year especially enjoyed the sausages!) - we would stay here again if in the area.

I went here today for an afternoon tea and there was a long wait for the food to arrive. The waitress had unfortunately delivered our afternoon tea to another table so we were forgotten about for a while. However they were very apologetic and complimented us with champagne. The service from Maz and Tanya in particular was first class and very professional. Food was good, excellent value for money and would definitely return.

"Beautiful old style Hotel good position to town"

Attending a charity event we need accommodation and decided to make a weekend of it. I initially made an error in the booking rang the hotel direct and said I would rather stay in the executive room 2 nights and not move rooms and was this possible as the booking app was saying they were fully booked. The woman that I spoke to was polite kind and efficient and arranged this for me. I later learned she was a manager. Very good service I was in a good mood straight away. We parked in the underground car park. I don't recommend this is you have a problem with stairs I would get dropped off at the front then whoever is driving can take the car to the car park good rate for safe gated car parking. The hotel needs a little attention but all in all still good condition. Room was lovely bathroom was ok bath and shower which is always good. We didn't eat in the hotel for breakfast which we will do as I would stay here again. The staff were willing and attentive and the reception staff very good which is always very important. The porter was very accommodating even though taking our bags back to the car end of stay must have been hard work they were very heavy! Well done team see you again.

"Reading about a different place"

Having just had a three night stay I must record that all the staff were great, as was the hotel, and I don't really recognise some of the negative comments . It's all about a sense of balance and being happy with an overall attitude .. which we found first class, and believe me, we have high expectations .

Purchased an afternoon tea package from Westover Beauty in Bournemouth, which included some beauty treatments at their salon and afternoon tea here at the Norfolk Hotel. Lovely Hotel, with very friendly and helpful staff and a very tasty and enjoyable afternoon tea Thank you very much highly recommended

"So disappointed"

Trident_Steve, Iver, United Kingdom 16/10/2019

We were looking forward to staying here as it was an old traditional hotel. We had booked one of the larger rooms. The room was lovely. Unfortunately there was no heating and the room was getting quite cold. My wife went to reception and was told the heating didn't come on until about 7pm. Reluctantly, the receptionist handed over a small blow heater. This was not very effective in our size room. Another trip was made to reception at around 8pm to advise still no heating, she said maintenance would have to look at it, They wouldn't be on site until 8am! She couldn't give out any more heaters as they were now locked away and didn't have the key.despite other guests complaining of the cold. We also advised her that the safe in our room didn't work - she said there was nothing she could do about this. There was no information pack in our room. More concerning, there was no fire safety info or escape route map on the back of the door. When using the shower, the riser rail came away from the wall. This is a newly refurbished room! Enough was enough. We met with the hotel deputy manager and told him we wanted to check out, He understood and also arranged a full refund.

"Champagne Afternoon Tea"

3
Kara G, Bournemouth, United Kingdom 14/10/2019

I had received a groupon voucher for the Norfolk Royale Hotel's Champagne Afternoon Tea as a gift for my birthday. I had booked this afternoon tea prior to my arrival via telephone and I had given the lady on the phone the groupon code so did not expect any issues upon arrival. Unfortunately the afternoon tea did not get off to the best start. Initially we really struggled to find parking in the nearby local area and it was only after I went into the hotel to advise Reception we had arrived and we were struggling, did the lady give me a code for the underground car park and advise we could park there. As a side note, the underground carpark is very small so be aware, especially if you have a larger than normal car. Things didn't really improve when I went to the bar to advise we were here for the afternoon tea. I had assumed, because I was not informed otherwise, that because I had given my groupon code to the lady on the phone that there was nothing more required. The barman said that the ladies who answer the phone are not very good at capturing the information and was insistent I give him the code. I tried to advise him I didn't have it readily to hand as it was a gift and he felt it was necessary to speak to me in quite a condescending manner, telling me that I must have it on my phone - which I didn't as, again, it was a gift and I had not been given anything on my phone from my friend. However, I did, thankfully, have the print out in the car and luckily my boyfriend was able to bring this with him when he arrived after parking so eventually that got resolved. However, I would suggest it is made clearer to customers so confusion is avoided. The afternoon tea itself was fairly standard with a selection of sandwiches, cakes, 1 very large scone each, jam/cream, two glasses of Champagne (one each) and, it would appear, although we didn't take up the offer, refillable coffee and tea. I found the afternoon tea quite enjoyable but it would of been nice to have a bigger selection of more specialised coffee and tea such as green tea (various flavours), lattes etc (if this is available we were not advised of this, hence the criticism). It would of also been a nice touch, considering it is a premium afternoon tea, to be have been told what was in the sandwiches/cakes rather than just leaving us to pull things apart to look and see. We were seated in the veranda which was quite quiet but a little cold. I can imagine it would of been very lovely on a sunny day. Even though we experienced some initial difficulties at the beginning I did enjoy the afternoon tea overall.

after arriving at this beautiful hotel, there was a mix up with our room ,after going back to the reception we were upgraded to a fabulous suite with a massive window overlooking the road at the front of the hotel.its in a brilliant location, the suite was spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated with ultra comfortable beds. The only quirk is the lift, which seems to have a mind of its own and is so slow,i remember years ago staying here and it was the same then,we found this rather amusing ,apart from that , it is one of the best hotels i have ever stayed in .

Visited here for a Masonic weekend, all started well, nice room and all was good, the food on the Friday evening was nice and hot and the waiting stuff worked very hard. On the Saturday the breakfast was plentiful and hot. We returned to our room at 3-30 and found it hadn't been cleaned as with another 2 couples in our group. We went to reception who really couldn't be bothered. After an hour we went back and the bed had been made and towels changed but not cleaned. The evening meal was nice and hot and again the waiting staff worked hard. The M.C for the night I'm told was provided by the hotel, he was terrible and couldn't even remember the name of the lodge that was holding the event ! After the event had finished we as a group went to the bar and and saw a couple and their two children, they had 3 dogs, they were allowing them to climb all over the chairs and tables... the staff couldn't be bothered unless they had been to upset the customers. When I checked out today I mentioned it to the reception staff, when I mentioned it to them they just couldn't be bothered.

"Rude, non-verbal staff"

tiger_720_1, Bournemouth, United Kingdom 06/10/2019

Visited here for Sunday dinner as I'd heard good things. However, as good as the food was, the staff here definitely are not. The lady on reception was moody when I enquired where to go, the girl in the restaurant did not ask if we had been before and then just left us sitting at our table without explaining the etiquette. Most of the staff appeared 'non English' which meant communication was poor. Wouldn't hurry to return.

"Great location"

Stayed for 2 nights and really enjoyed it. We walked from the train station, but somehow got turned around. The locals didn't recognize the hotel when I asked about the Best Western on Richmond Hill, so if asking for directions, refer to it as the Norfolk Royale. It took us about 30 minutes to walk from the train station, but like I say, we sort of got turned around. We finally just stumbled upon it after taking a side street. We had prepaid for 1 night stay and used BW points for a second night. We were originally going to have to change rooms, but they called us shortly after check in to say we could remain in the room we were in. Our room was lovely and well appointed. It was a good size (compared to what we had stayed in London just prior). We were on the second floor and it was a tad noisy in the evening, but quieted down by midnight so didn't disturb our sleep. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was a good size with a nice big tub. The hotel was very close to lots of restaurants and bars as well as all the shopping and sights. We didn't eat at the hotel, but we did get ice from the bar to take up to our room. They were great about giving us an ice bucket or a pitcher. There is also a swimming pool onsite but not sure if it is free to use or not. We did ask for a wake up call for the morning we were leaving, but fortunately we had a backup alarm, because the wake up call never came. Overall, it was a very enjoyable stay in a lovely old property that has been lovingly maintained.

Breaking a journey from France we stayed here for 1 night in September. Decor a bit faded, We had pre-booked a meal in the restaurant. The food was fine but an alleged entertainer was singing(?) in the lounge. Really intrusive and not very good. We took ourselves back to our room for the evening. Our room was described as "accessible". It had a shower over the bath! As it happened we could manage but both my wife and I have been disabled from time to time. A shower over a bath is NOT accessible. One other point to notice, the access to the carpark is via stairs only and the entrance is very narrow. Larger cars might struggle to enter. The parking at the front of the hotel was blocked by large vans, maybe because they couldn't get in the car park. Could have been better.

"Could of been better! Overpriced!!!!!"

vickiwilsx, Bushey, United Kingdom 30/09/2019

First of all beware to park It's £16! Which is ridiculous and too expensive. This hotel needs to be refurbished it's old and dated, staff are very rude not helpful at all, they just look very miserable. On arrival the women behind the desk was so moody and rude, we got our bags and went up to our room which we paid £157 for!!! To find the room hadn't been cleaned, cobwebs everywhere a horrible smell and a poo in the toilet, we complained as the room wasn't worth £157 and we got moved to a suite which was lovely clean and just looked like what a room at £157 for 1 night should look like, apart from The windows banging and crashing because of the wind and the door handles on every door nearly coming off our room was lovely. As for breakfast don't even bother wasting your money, it was horrible and very very disappointing the scrambled egg looked like Rice pudding, nothing tasted fresh so avoid and buy something from somewhere else.

"Very pleasant visit"

A grand old hotel based in the centre of Bournemouth. Upon arrival we asked for access to their underground car park so that we could leave the car and bags until the room was ready. Our room on level 2 was (I think) described as a superior double. It was a large room, in fact larger than nearly all others offered in Bournemouth. We were delighted with it and even more so on getting into bed. The bed had lovely crisp ironed cotton sheets and the bed itself was very comfortable. All the staff were very friendly and couldn't do enough for you, a real pleasure. Breakfast was buffet style with everything you could possible wish for. Overall an excellent stay and now we have found it we won't both looking for any other hotel there.

"Excellent Afternoon Tea"

5
User 19/09/2019

treated to a Champagne afternoon tea ( via a groupon coupon 45% off ) and we wasn't disapointed, Service was excellent, plenty of tea, cakes were a delicious, the sandwiches were ok, the ham could have been nicer, tasted like the wafer thin ham you get from supermarkets, but apart from that I highly recommend it here.

"Good location, excellent room facilities, dated public areas"

3
marlarkey99, Amersham, United Kingdom 18/09/2019

Stayed recently. Excellently located just near the central gardens, including a large underground car park. The room was excellent. Very comfortable and well equipped - my only quibble being the lack of aircon. The hotel itself is a bit dated and past its best - typical of a traditional old-school seaside resort hotel. It has a large lounge, a bit dated but comfortable. The bar closes early so there is little opportunity for late night socialising. Didn't eat dinner in the hotel but the fairly standard buffet breakfast was ok.

"Always a pleasure to visit this hotel"

Jm922014, Westcliff-on-Sea, United Kingdom 16/09/2019

Quite an old fashioned building, but very welcoming. We have stayed here several times and have no complaints. Music in the lounge on Friday was an added bonus. Staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast ok and the couple of dinners we had in the restaurant were of good quality. I feel they were a bit short staffed, which is my only negative comment

"A Charming old style hotel"

4
User 14/09/2019

Recently had a two night package with dinner and breakfast. Very good value. This is NOT a trendy boutique hotel but a charming hotel that has definitely seen better days. The room was large and well equipped. Amenities from Molton Brown. The staff were wonderful. They could not do enough for us. Dinner was good but breakfast could have been a bit better if there had been more fruit and choice. Still, it was perfectly adequate.

"Dated and noisy"

1
User 07/09/2019

We are staying at this hotel as I write this review. It is 2300 and I am in my room listening to the music being played in the bar area, not much chance of getting to sleep any time soon. The place as a whole is very dated and in need of a complete overhaul. The stairs creak with every step and you can actually feel the foor in the corridors move under your feet whilst walking to your room. We went to use the swimming pool earlier, but as we could not even see the bottom of the pool very well due to the murkiness of the water we did not even get in. It is a shame as it is in an ideal location and the staff are very friendly. We will not be returning here again.

"Disappointing first impression but room a great improvement."

3
Peter B, Norfolk, United Kingdom 07/09/2019

Limited car parking at the front but it has a much larger car park to the side/rear of the property. My first impression when arriving was the exterior needed refreshing... Receptionist kept me waiting while he was having a personal conversation with another member of staff behind the scenes. Very slow lift, I used the stairs most of the time as got bored waiting for it. On the plus side nice large well decorated room fully equipped. Some of the bathroom fittings liked a bit tired, overall happy with price of the room and nice cooked breakfast. Check out was more professional. Good location. I would use again and recommend the hotel. The swimming pool looked inviting although I didn't use it.

"Central and comfortable."

abvehicle B, Exeter, United Kingdom 07/09/2019

We arrived during the afternoon and the gent on reception checked us in with business like efficiency. Our room, like the whole hotel, reminded me of an ageing actress, tired, creaking and in need of some work. That said, we both enjoyed our one night stay and would return. The staff at breakfast worked very hard with politeness and professionalism despite being one or two members of staff short. Overall a good experience.

"Good location"

3
User 05/09/2019

Our check-in was quick and our room was ready straight away. The room was a good size. We didn't eat at the hotel as there are so many good places nearby. The best thing is the location as easy for the beach nd going out in the evening. A lift to get bags up from the car park would have been good. We had a quick dip in the pool which was good after a busy day. The corridor to our room was quite shabby and people's left over room service trays were left on the floor all day.

"Convenient for central Bournemouth"

3
Eleanor1812, Manchester, United Kingdom 02/09/2019

Spent 3 nights here, and the hotel has many good points such as the decor, the small but warm swimming pool/ jacuzzi and a central location. However, I found the staff mixed in attitude and friendliness. One at reception was surly in my opinion and I felt as though he was not happy to even be working there. Either that or he was always tired. One disadvantage of these old buildings is ( as I found), very squeaky floorboards in rooms and corridors and also poor soundproofing. Our room 115 was directly above the dining room and despite asking to turn music down in there at 10pm it persisted despite the room being empty. It starts again at 7am when breakfast begins I was told. Do don't stay near the dining area if you want peace and quiet. Will choose a more modern hotel next time and forget about a swim.

"Never again for me"

2
terricherise, Southampton, United Kingdom 01/09/2019

I will just start with our first issue, We arrived at 3.30pm and our room was still not ready to check in (even though check in is from 3) and neither were the people's rooms ready in front of me, I was annoyed because we had travelled down and couldn't even get into our room to put our bags in or anything, After the rude receptionist finally gave us our cards and pointed us to the broken lift to use, Walking across the creepiest hallway ever with the noisiest floor boarding, we finally got our room. My partner described our room as 1408, it was horrific, We paid £146 for a premier deluxe king room, which is pricey for one night stay but seeing as it was an “award winning” hotel we booked it anyways as a treat to ourselves. The room was horrific. The bed was 2 beds pushed together making this so uncomfortable, The hardest mattress I've ever slept on!! Awful sleep. It was an okay sized room, in definite need of a refurbish!which actually provided a lot of facilities Iron, hairdryer, tv, kettle, selection of teas and biscuits, this would be the only reason why I gave it 2 stars. The bathroom is the weirdest bathroom ever, like a corridor! They provided okay toiletries and towels, But the bathroom was disgusting!!! The toilet wasn't cleaned properly, Pubic hair and bodily fluids. The bath mat was disgusting. The air vent looked like it's never been cleaned, The shower curtain was grotty and when my partner sat on the toilet seat THE WHOLE THING BROKE IN HALF WITH HIM ON IT!!! He really hurt himself, I immediately went down and complained but they were apologetic. They had a balcony area which we initially thought was incredible, However it was disgusting, 3 mismatch sofas, covered in stains and cigarette burns, A grotty table with news papers dating back weeks ago, And the worst carpet I had ever seen in my life, the stains were like nothing you've ever seen! When I went to show reception the pictures, she protested that they had recently been done, Yeah probably in 2007, They were vile!!! In the bathroom if you opened the window it led to next doors balcony which was really bad!! We took a visit down to use the leisure facilities, The Sauna was broken which was a shame, one worked but was constantly full of people. The pool was awful! Lovely and warm but very small, They must have very good camera angle on their website because it's so small, and full of algae round the edges, The pool was so murky coloured that you couldn't even see your feet, (But I don't know if that was the tiles colouring reflecting off the water) but it looked like it needed a good clean! The breakfast had a great selection but we didn't enjoy it, The eggs were watery, scrambled eggs were dry, the bacon was dry, the beans were cold, A few people were complaining about the breakfast and no hot plates. The fruit selection was lovely though! Covered in fresh fruit and juices. We were placed by an area where staff kept coming over to get cutlery and plates etc, so you couldn't enjoy your food without someone hovering over you constantly. We did not enjoy our stay at all, We were given a small refund but I still wouldn't have paid the room price that we technically paid They “kindly did not charge us parking” as a good will gesture even though we didn't even park there anyways Would not return. Ever.

"Great!"

Mum2grace, Bristol 31/08/2019

A great stay! I booked last minute for a night over the weekend of the Air Festival, a family room with Breakfast for £108 which I was happy with. Previously I had booked a close by 2 star hotel with terrible reviews so I cancelled that. The location was superb, straight off the A338 and we were here! In the Centre with a short stroll through the beautiful gardens to the beach. Easy to navigate around and surrounded by nearby shops and eateries. Reception was swift and we were given the door cards and pin code to use the under hotel car park (£16). Keep the cards away from your phone as they can mess with them! The room was huge with an en-suite bath/shower with Molton Brown toiletries-lovely! There were bunk beds and a king bed as well as iron, hairdryer, safe and a fan. The room was lovely and clean, with crisp bedding and towels were provided. The small pool and jacuzzi were so toasty and we enjoyed having the pool to ourselves at 8.30pm after an afternoon at the beach. The pool was open 7am til 9pm and you need a pincode from reception to access the area. Sauna was a bonus but sadly the steam room was out of order. We enjoyed a drink from the bar in the beautiful garden and people watching on the balcony at the front of the hotel into the night. Breakfast was great, this consisted of a selection of fruit juices or hot drinks plus an array of cereal, fruits, pastries as well as a hot buffet. Overall a great stay and looking to return whenever we come to Dorset.

Stayed here a week with our daughter (bed and breakfast). The hotel is in a great location, right in the centre of Bournemouth, a minute's walk away from all the shops/restaurants, which is just what we wanted. The beach is a 5 minute walk away through the Lower Gardens. Staff were friendly and polite. Our room was a family room at the front of the hotel. It was tired and dated and in need of an upgrade but previous trip advisor reviews had mentioned this about some rooms already, so we were expecting it. The lobby is a nice area to sit and relax in. The hotel's exterior at the front is nice, especially at night when it's all lit up. We had no issues and we enjoyed our week's stay.

My friend received an afternoon tea voucher which we used today and it was delightful. Food was good and plentiful, lovely champagne and the staff were really attentive which was so nice to see, they made sure we had everything we needed. Lovely relaxing traditional environment too.

"Dissapointing"

Deefoodie, Eastbourne 15/08/2019

I am writing this review for my son and his girlfriend . He had booked the hotel as a treat for her Birthday on Tuesday 13th August. It isn't cheap - £100 b and b plus £16 parking. He is a student and paid for this out of his hard earnt wages over summer. On arrival at the hotel late afternoon the receptionist made no effort to actually be a receptionist and basically ignored them to the point of being rude . Their room was dusty , the chairs threadbare . In fact his girlfriend said the whole hotel just felt dirty and needed a good clean. Breakfast was ok but cheap nasty sausages. Shame on you - hotel ! Reading through other reviews the responses given seems to be a copied standard reply - please don't reply to this review , just makes it even more annoying.

Norfolk_GM, Manager at Norfolk Royale Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Deefoodie Many thanks for your feedback on your sons recent stay, please accept my apologies for the issues they experienced. I will certainly be speaking with the receptionist that was on duty and also the housekeeping team as it would appear that the service and levels of cleanliness that is expected and that they have all been trained to provide has not met the required standard. We get many wonderful comments about our breakfast normally, however I will get my Head Chef to check the quality of the products we are getting from our suppliers are at the standard they should be. I do hope we will get the opportunity to welcome them back to the hotel in the future and restore their faith in us. Kind regards Paul James Deputy General Manager

It was a wonderul stay. We enjoyed the pull and a very comfortable family room. The staff was very accommodating, specially one lad with glasses, not sure his name, Paul? I would say this hotel is a great relationship price / value. We would come back.

"Tired seaside hotel"

Ann B, York, United Kingdom 12/08/2019

This hotel whilst centrally located is not worthy of being rated as four stars. The family room we stayed in was very tired and dated. Had peeling wallpaper in the bedroom and mould and mildew in the bathroom. Despite our booking being for two adults and one child, the room was only made up for two adults; we had to request for linen for the bunk bed. There was very little information given at check in and usually this is not an issue as the in room welcome information in hotels negates this however; there was no information pack available. The room had a large wardrobe but only 4 coat hangers! The pool was lovely and warm though a bit on the small side. Breakfast was excellent with very attentive staff. Parking is charged at £16.00 per day and the entrance is rather tight. Our room was directly opposite the lift and located directly above the a delivery point and subsequently quite noisy.

"So disappointing "

1
NTB22, Lichfield, United Kingdom 11/08/2019

There was no recognition on arrival of my membership of Best Western and the receptionist was not aware of how loyalty points are awarded The lift was probably installed by Noah it was really slow and stopped at every floor Our room had dirty carpet, mould on the window frames, dirty cushions on the bed and tide marks around the bath - we asked for the bath to be cleaned twice - we ended up cleaning it ourself and my Saturday paper ordered on the Wednesday didn't turn up! On Friday the hand towel we were given had more holes in it than a sieve. We had to ask for toilet roll - the receptionist put it on the counter expecting us to take it to the room ! There was a toilet seat missing from the ladies toilet on the lower ground floor - my wife took a photo of it and reported it - it was still like this 24 hours later - clearly nobody walks about the building to check for issues - but staff are run ragged at busy times such as breakfast. Managers clearly cannot either care or have been instructed on the need for attention to detail- perhaps the extortionate rate of £16 per day for parking could be used ? It's a great shame as this hotel has great potential- we did complain about these issues - all we got was “what do you want me to do about it “ - let me tell you it's not our responsibility to fix your issues - some simple opening of your eyes and paying attention to detail would not go amiss

LondonAjk, London, United Kingdom 08/08/2019

Just returned from a short visit to this lovely hotel. Our room on the 3rd floor was comfortable- however some updating is needed concerning the en-suite. Immaculately clean and a very good night's sleep. We had a nice meal in the hotel - at a good price. It's worth having. Second night we had bar food which was lovely too. The staff are very polite and helpful. Lift is incredibly slow at opening - so if you're in a rush-don't use! We didn't use the pool and hot tub - some slatted blinds around that area would be nice as it's very exposed to the garden and bar areas.

"let down by noise"

David E, London, United Kingdom 08/08/2019

Overall very nice hotel , excellently situated. Now the problem if you arrive at the hotel and they tell you you have room 214 refuse it!!!! We stayed 3 nights and the first morning woken about 5am by a very load grinding sound which happened it seemed every 20 minutes or so. It wasnt until the second night we found a lift next to our room- we had always approached from the other side. Second morning 5am woken again , we now realised it was the lift making the noise as we were only staying one more night didnt bother to ask to be moved. Breakfast was lovely buffet style. Staff all good bar the receptionist when we arrived who totally ignored us and was talking to another member of staff , the maintenance man who was repairing a light noticed and came and asked if he could help! Did tell them about the lift noise on checking out and they didnt seem at all surprised and said they would knock off the car park charges. We would stay there again but NOT in room 214 it shouldnt be used as you will have a disturbed sleep!

"Upgraded room great, good service from the front desk"

TheWonderingsoul22, London, United Kingdom 08/08/2019

The Norfolk Royale is centrally located and has secure underground parking. You can easily walk to the pier in 10 - 15 minutes through the central garden where many restaurants are located. On arrival, we were allocated an awful room with stains on the bed, mould on the curtains and a dirty sink and bath. The lady we spoke to on reception was very helpful. We were upgraded (with manager approval) to room 119 which was the polar opposite. Spotlessly clean, spacious and modern. It really helped make our stay and shows commitment to the Best Western philosophy of sorting out anything that is wrong. The blonde girl cleaning was also very approachable and helpful. The rear wing of the hotel seems in urgent need of renovating, but room 119 shows clearly the sort of standard that would set this hotel at the fore of any rival hotel in the area. Hopefully BW will start sorting this out over the winter. The lobby and bar are nice places to relax in. The buffet style breakfast was ok, but the Spanish staff on duty were uninterested, disengaged and borderline rude. No welcome, no smiles at all from anyone. They need someone to organise and train them better so they know what is acceptable. Example: we ended up with a really weak pot of coffee the first morning. On pointing this out, our server said "Oh yes, I know. That's British coffee. You know - instant. I don't blame you. I don't like it either." Turning the cup to one side, you could clearly see the heavier sediment in the bottom of the cup. This was not instant coffee. Someone had either put hardly any grounds in the cafetiere or had just topped it up with water. The Spanish waiter on the bar was much better. I saw him deal with a difficult customer in a calm, professional manner. Parking is available onsite at £16 per night. You can park at the Richmond Hill NCP for £10 a night, but it is not as secure. You may find peace of mind to be worth the small uplift. The exception may be if you have a large 4x4 or estate as it is a snug fit at entrance and exit. Because of the upgrade, our stay was a really nice one.

Come here every year with the PEEL HOTEL GROUP. Fantastic deals in Jan, Feb. Love the hotel, tho rather dated and in need of a *Facelift*. GOOD ROOMY ROOMS, Staff very accomodating, and pleasant. Food good, nice breakfast buffet. Near all facilities in town. Lovely park nearby. Always ask for rooms at front of hotel, NOT extention at back. Rooms dark and smaller. We will keep on going..

User 27/07/2019

Stayed here for 3 nights for a beach holiday. Room is well equipped (massive tv with lots of channels, excellent brew making facilities, good hair dryer - best I've ever had in a hotel, iron and fan provided in warm weather). Decor is a little bit tired but hotel could do with a bit of modernisation (particularly the slow lift) but it is comfortable and the location is excellent. The facilities are good but could with a deep clean (mould on pool tiles etc). My main issue with the hotel is the price of the car parking especially for the car park. The parking is underground and it is very very tight to get in (you may struggle with in a big car) and the bays are very small. It was quite stressful trying to park and if we hadn't have paid upfront we wouldn't park here. If we knew the NCP multi story was in such close proximity we would park there and recommend you should. Breakfast seems e pensive but spoons is just round the corner and much better value for money. Evening entertainment (Steve whale) was best I've seen for a while. Overall, this hotel is decent value for money and you shouldn't let some of these over dramatic reviews put you off staying in this hotel

markgay2007, London, United Kingdom 27/07/2019

I stayed one night only that was enough. The room was dark and the furniture was old and dated. Ground floor sub basement noisey room next to corridor door and facing lift. The bed was unreal, it was really was like a trampoline it was so springy . Reception was not accomodating when I arrived early and directed me to leave my luggage in an unsafe area and return for 3pm to check in. The pool is rather dirty and in need of renovation. The steam room was out of order and the sauna has seen better days. Broken shower next to sauna. In its heyday might of been worth a night , but not now. Breakfast was just ok. Wont be returning if I'm honest.

Very dirty hotel! Found a chunk of black hair in our bed sheets. We had to change the rooms however in the new room the bathroom wasn't cleaned and the shampoo, body wash etc was left opened and used form the previous guests. Front office staff is unprofessional and rude. We did not received even a verbal apology after addressing issues with our room. Tried contacting hotel regarding this terrible experience and nobody has even got back to me. Avoid this hotel to avoid disappointment

Stayed here for wedding anniversary. Edwardian style with up to date bedroom. I can honestly say it's the best nights sleep I've had in a hotel. Lovely queen sized bed. Large room and clean bathroom. "Good location and value "

WarringtonGibbo, Newton Le Willows, United Kingdom 24/07/2019

Having spent 2 nights B&B at this hotel whilst on a golf break, I can say it ticks most of the boxes. It's perfect for a short walk into town and the marvellous sandy beaches, but additionally it's perfect for accessing the new forest and the many golf courses in the area. The hotel itself is in good order but looks a tad tired and in need of a lick of paint here and there, but at the price this is perhaps being a little picky. Breakfast is great value at £10 and the staff are superb. Rooms are clean and tidy if again looking a little tired. Negatives are the £16 parking charge(used the nearby multi-storey £10 ( 24hr) and the life which is painfully slow, but on the whole a good stay and would come again .

"Paint work requires attention"

cor12345ww, Leicester, United Kingdom 23/07/2019

Spent three nights here after spending 10 nights here in 1996. I feel that the hotel although has good customer service is being rundown in some areas, namely the bedrooms, which need doing up now, specifically the flaking paintwork and old flooring. It's dirty in the £16 a night car park and the paintwork is bad as well. The garden looks sad and neglected. Obviously the reception looks good, looks freshly painted. And lounges look good as well, it's not worth the money now like it was in 1996, sorry to say,

"Good hotel"

We have just stayed for two nights at the Norfolk Royale hotel in Bournemouth. Having two relatives in their 80's it was important to have an accessible room The room was a decent size, clean with comfortable beds. Having a little patio with outside chairs was great for them. The breakfast choices were good and plenty to choose from. We ate evening meal twice, good selection tasty food and the staff were very attentive. Special mention to Chelsea who was great. Reception staff were friendly and we didn't mind paying the car park fee as we didn't really want to use the car while we were there All in all a good hotel which we would return to

"An enjoyable stay"

Tonbon55, Birmingham, United Kingdom 19/07/2019

We spent two nights at the Norfolk and a good time was had by all. There are some areas of the hotel that are a little tired and the back terraces could do with some work but both the rooms we had were well appointed and clean. The beds were very comfortable. The bathrooms spotless. As we had some elderly family members with us, we decided to eat dinner in the hotel both nights. The food was tasty and the menu varied both nights. A special thank you to Chelsea, our waitress who was efficient and attentive. On the whole the hotel is good value for money. The coffees at the bar over-priced but they did come with a delicious cookie.

"Never Again"

847zarap, Wolverhampton, United Kingdom 18/07/2019

On arrival to our room the room had not been cleaned. The bathroom was filthy having dry urine and faeces around the toilet bowel, the sink had dirty soap scum around it and the floor had dirty soap patch of water marks. There was also a dirty sock behind chair, food on cushions which had been placed clean side up on the bed!. My partner spoke with recepton who was very apologetic and moved us right away with an upgrade. The new room was ok....i still had to wipe the bath out myself as it still had some scum around it and the main light didnt work. Breakfast was ok, buffet food same everyday and warm not hot....All i can say is Travelodge breakfast is superior to what i had at the Norfolk. When checking out the receptionist wanted to charge £48 for parking however we had only used the car park for 1 night (£16 charge). When we explained this she said there was no way of checking and was visibly frustrated she said we should have said on booking in and wanted to know where we had parked for the other two nights (family member).I had to state that i was not paying for parking not used. In any case we only paid the £16 and were told next time we must let them know on arrival about parking!. Needless to say i will NEVER stay at the Norfolk Royal Hotel again!

"Excellent location, great staff, big room - few niggles"

3
reshers, London, United Kingdom 18/07/2019

Hotel is lovely to look at and the most convenient location for the beach, restaurants and shopping. Staff are great and the rooms are well equipped but a few small niggles which may not be an issue to other guests. Parking is £16 per day, and on final day can leave the car as long as needed. Swimming pool/jacuzzi is clean and changing rooms too. Bar staff are nice & very helpful. Breakfast was poor, not nearly enough vegetarian options, only non-dairy option was soya milk, tongs for hot breakfast all cross contaminated & staff didn't bring out alternatives. We went out for breakfast on the second day. Rooms were clean-ish. Dust in corners,on windows and tables, bathroom was very dirty around the edges, grout, plug holes and sealant need deep clean - cillit bang and flash would do the trick. Shower head in room 207 was weak and bathtub so narrow and shower door leaking, the whole floor flooded after 5mins. Handheld shower just didn't seem to work, scalding hot or off were the only settings. Minibar well stocked but EXPENSIVE and no complimentary drinking water, even in such hot weather. No air-con due to age of hotel but the fan provided was filthy with dust. Replacement was just as dusty and windows were spiderwebby so didn't open those either. Safe provided and excellent toiletries (Molton Brown) & plugs near the bed, rare in hotels and very convenient

"Disappointing"

2
User 18/07/2019

The photos and reviews online looked great. However we were very disappointed. Booked a family room but were given a double with an extra fold out bed hastily added on arrival. When we we complained we were eventually given a family room. Both rooms had decor which was very tired, carpets were dirty, wallpaper peeling off and curtains were incredibly dusty. I never realised you could get a bad cup of Tea or coffee until I came here. Coffee weak with bits floating in it and tea was grey in colour. Staff however did their best and were very helpful and courteous and worked hard. This is not a 4 star hotel in my view. We will not be returning.

"Do not be fooled by this hotel's old period charm. That's just salesman spiel."

2
User 15/07/2019

This hotel is dirty and very decrepid. Big rooms do not make for a happy experience when you know what the hotel is really like. The whole place is in need of a complete make over. Overpriced and very outdated. A walk up the stairs tells the whole story with a lift that doesnt work properly along with the door keys that dont work properly either and moth eathen carpets. Would only stay here again with a revamp and staff who havent been brainwashed into telling guests lies about the true condition of this property. You would have to be blind not to see that this place is broken down. The owners need to stop taking money and plough it back into the hotel's complete renovation. Personally I feel robbed that I handed over £400 to stay here for four nights. It was worth half that. Not 4 star at all. I had a lovely bath tough. There was that. But a dip in the sea was healthier and free. Stayed in room 215 and had to put up with the squeaky floorboards in the room abve. What a nonsense.

"Poor show"

2
User 09/07/2019

Hotel was clean enough, staff were frustrating slow with bar service. First two nights couldn't sleep for the constant noise of the bathroom fan all night which sounded like a jet taking off. There's a massive 48inch telly on the wall which seemed ideal to watch Wimbledon, but apparently the satellite signal doesn't work when the sun is out, as the roof gets hot?? Poor from what seemed at first to be a quality Hotel.

Initially we had booked into the Royal Bath and Spa hotel, only stayed an hour there as our room was so awful. As it was Cheerleaders Weekend everywhere was booked up but we managed to get the last room here, (hotel had been recommended to us by a guy we met on the train), a massive improvement on the last one, in fact no comparison and cheaper. No complaints apart from a noisy lift next door but we didn't say anything as this was the last room available they probably keep for emergencies and they had agreed we could stay at the last minute. Lovely staff, fabulous breakfasts, great location - no complaints!

"Excellent weekend stay"

5
Jonathan01, Essex, England 07/07/2019

I sometimes think the 1-star reviewers live in a parallel universe. I can't review what could have, might have or should have – I can only review what I experienced during our weekend stay and that was the polar opposite of what the negative reviewers have said. We prepaid parking at £16 a night but we could come and go as often as we pleased (as long as there was still a space on our return) and considering how close you are to the Town Square, the price is not unreasonable. Some of the rooms are small but you get what you pay for. We had an excellent Executive room (302) at the back of the hotel. Yes – the lift at the front just off reception is probably the slowest lift since Elisha Otis invented them but then we discovered another lift just before the Gin Garden that opened up directly opposite our room. Not quite an en-suite lift but the nearest thing to it so we never had to wait or queue. Couldn't disagree more about the breakfasts. A very good selection of sliced fruits (pineapple, melon,) plus orange segments and fruit salad were all ice cold – the way they should be. A good selection of the usual hot dishes were piping hot – as they should be. Used plates, dishes and cups were all cleared from the table promptly. Our deal included two dinners and on both nights we were able to vary some of the elements to get dishes just the way we like them and very tasty they were too. On the Friday night, there was a female singer performing in the lounge area – such a shame that there were only a few people there as she was rather good with a wide repertoire ranging from classics to the latest chart songs. Negative reviews have focused on the rudeness/unprofessionalism of staff. Based on our experience, we cannot praise the staff highly enough. Mehroz on reception was as polite as they come; Juan in the restaurant on day one was charming and Dmitri in the restaurant for both dinner and breakfast was excellent. In fact, housekeeping staff, cleaning and maintenance people all made eye contact and offered a cheery “good morning” – it is unusual to get this degree of positive interaction across the board. We had a really great time and would recommend unhesitatingly – the bad reviewers must have been very unlucky indeed

"Over priced and totally underwhelming "

1
User 01/07/2019

My sister and I stayed here in June . My sister used to live in central central Bournemouth and this was always on our to do list . She paid 220 Euros for one night twin room . To say it was over priced is an understatement . That price did not even include breakfast . The room was large as was the sparsely furnished bathroom . The carpet was stained and dirty underfoot . We arrived after a 4 hour journey due to roadworks . We had checked previously that we could park in the hotel car park at of course an extra cost, but the car park was full . The surly receptionist said the room was not paid for despite my sister showing her paperwork to say paid in full. We were kept at reception for over 20 mins while she shifted through paperwork but couldn't find our booking . Eventually after repeatedly being shown our confirmation she said she would check with the manager , and gave us our room keys . When we checked out the following day nothing was mentioned . The Male on reception who I asked about this simply said it's all sorted my darling . How very un professional . Would he have used the same phrase to my husband . I think not ! The room was not air conditioned and we later requested a fan and some ice and also milk as sadly only one small sachet of milk was provided . After ringing the desk for ten minutes we eventually got everything . As we had missed our meal reservation in Bournemouth I rang room service . It was 6 pm . The response was can you ring back in five minutes as I'm too busy now !! Because we had no option I did and same male says thanks , I can deal with you now ! . We had a pizza which was possibly the best thing about the whole stay . It was freshly cooked, It did take 25 minutes to arrive but well worth it . Later that night after we returned from the concert which was the purpose of the trip , I went to the bar to get a drink . It was about 11 pm. Seventeen people were waiting in a queue to be served with one stressed but very helpful young bar man !! At least two people went to reception to ask for more staff . Eventually a casually dressed and rather clipped female cane to his aid , and we got served . Twenty minute wait . When we got to the room , the TV was not working . We tried every number on the phone for assistance but not one was answered so we gave up . The hotel is central but there are many others in Bournemouth equally as central . The whole experience was one expensive let down . I could not recommend this hotel . Which is very sad as years ago it was very prestigious .

"Room OK - Reception & Customer service like Fawlty Towers"

nickhester123, Farnham, United Kingdom 01/07/2019

Took my parents away for the Saturday night this weekend as we had booked to see a concert at the BIC. To start with, the rooms were not 'cheap' - £137 each room with Breakfast and £16 to park using the hotels car park. Travelling all over the UK and abroad you expect certain standards and although this was OK, I wouldn't be coming back and would rather stay in a guest house. Check in is at 3pm which I think is quite late (especially as check out is at 11am) but to be told at 3pm that the rooms are not ready 'because they are busy' I don't think is on. The staff on reception were some of the worst I've ever encountered - clueless and really didn't know what to do - there was a queue of people all trying to check in from 3pm -4pm, a group in front of me had booked four rooms and only two were available - I don't know if it was resolved but it seemed typical of the shambles that was on front desk. The main lift took about two minutes to reach the second floor and then what seemed like two minutes for the door to fully open! (OK slight exaggeration!) The rooms to be fair were good, nicely decorated, good bathrooms and Molton Brown toiletries, didn't eat in the hotel until breakfast which was fair but a bit uninspiring - buffet style which was of average taste and quality. We went out for the evening as said but coming back in at around 10:30pm they had a singer on who bless her was something that you'd expect at 2am in a karaoke bar or a B&B in Blackpool - really put us all off having a nightcap in the bar. The Hotel itself is clean and tidy, really central for everything so location wise perfect. One worrying thing when it came to check out is that all the cases and bags are just put in a corner and on collection, no ticket, no one watching, asking or any security at all so everyone just goes and has a free for all. Saw a nice pair of Armani trainers sitting on top of a case - not sure if the owner was lucky enough to be reunited with them but the hotel must be very trusting. The hotel is ok - but I wouldn't want to pay more than say £80 a room even on a busy Saturday - there must be better Independent Guest houses around to at least offer some sort of service and customer satisfaction.

This was gifted from a friend via Groupon. The Norfolk Royal Hotel was once one of the grandest hotels (along with The Royal Bath) in Bournemouth. Sadly now the grandeur has faded & everything is looking somewhat tired. It does still have an elegant charm about it, but is definitely in need of some modernisation. We were quickly seated in the front conservatory area. We were promptly served our fizz & afternoon tea. Said we would wait a little bit for our warm drinks & we waited & waited. Eventually waited bought our coffee & tea. Afternoon tea was good with lots of sandwiches & cakes.

I am afraid this the first time I have left a bad review for a bournemouth hotel. The check in went smoothly as the lady on the reception was very efficient. I am disabled blue badge holder and had parked in an unreserved disabled bay which she confirmed I could use for the two days. Our problems started on the second day when we returned to the hotel on foot and noticed a reserved sign had been moved from another bay to ours. We spoke to who I presumed was the assistant manager and after much discussion he confirmed we could park there. We thought the problem was sorted we then sat on the hotel front balcony to have our champagne afternoon tea which we had booked for three o,clock we had wait over twenty minutes to be served as the waiter said a lot of people had just turned up at that time. We left the hotel on foot to do some to do some shopping when we returned there was a sign asking us to go to reception which we did . We were asked by the same assistant manager who told us we could park there and we told him the lady receptionist who them came out from the office and confirmed this. I also told him that he had told us we could park there which he denied but later admitted. I noticed a man stood in reception listening intently to the conversation we were having I asked him who he has and he informed us he was the hotel manager. He asked me to step out by my car for me to explain what had been happening, l explained everything to him and he apologised for the problems we had to endure. He took the sign from parking our parking bay and told me to leave the car where it was. We then returned to the hotel lobby my wife and I went to get the lift ,we then turned round to see the manager give his assistant the car parking slip and then it it appeared they were having a good laugh about it. I asked if they thought it was that funny they both with very embarrassed faces tried to deny it. I think they thought we had gone. I am afraid the management and front desk staff have behaved very poorly , they later sent an anniversary card to our room to say sorry it might have meant bit more if they had taken the fifty nine pence price from the back. This is the first hotel in bournemouth we will never return to . Rant over a very disappointed customer.

So we packed up from the Royal Bath Spa hotel after a horrific first night, and came to this hotel, we were greeted by friendly staff who did everything for us and went above and beyond when we decided to stay another night, the room was so spacious, clean and the views were brilliant. Location was perfect, after an awful start this hotel made our mini break and even included a pool and Jacuzzi which unlike the other hotel was complimentary! The outdoor gardens were perfect to sit down and relax with a drink in the evening, we can't wait to come back again and stay. I lost the piece of paper the gentleman gave me, but if you could check which gentleman was working 23rd June and 24th June he worked morning all through to the evening Mitesh maybe, but I could be wrong I can't find the paper but he was amazing, went above and beyond to keep our room when we wanted to stay another night, his service was so good I feel so bad to not remembering his name. I wish the first hotel had this service they could learn a thing or two from this gentleman. 5* thank you.

Stayed here for one night for my birthday. Had a problem as soon as we got there - the car park is locked by a pin code and the only other place to park outside the hotel had a ten minute limit, so I got out the car and went to the reception desk to ask for the pin - although I was waiting nearly ten minutes, even though there were members of staff on the reception desk who could clearly see I was waiting, they looked at me and ignored me. The car park is quite awkward to drive through as it is quite narrow, and once you are in there as it is underground there is only stairs back up, no lift so would be no good for disabled guests. We parked the car and went back to reception to check in, the person who checked us in answered multiple phone calls whilst in the middle of explaining things to us and telling us which forms to sign, so it took around ten minutes when if he had not kept answering the phone it probably would only have taken two minutes. The rooms were a lovely size, massive bed and bathroom - although the TV didn't work. Also our friends staying in the room next to ours who paid exactly the same price for exactly the same room, had a bathroom half the size of ours, not sure how this makes sense. We were told that the hotel's front doors are locked overnight and if we wanted to come in past midnight we would have to ring the doorbell and wait for the night porter, however after we went for a night out and came back around 3am there was no night porter and the doors were unlocked, so clearly not the safest place to stay. Didn't pay for breakfast as it was £11 per person which I thought was a ridiculous price. Overall the hotel is very old fashioned, but the room was really nice, although all the staff we encountered were very rude. Would stay here again just for somewhere to sleep after a night out, but not if I wanted a proper five star hotel experience.

"A really bad experience"

Trudi5093, Bath, United Kingdom 25/06/2019

I have never written a bad review of anywhere on Trip Advisor before, but we had such a poor experience here I thought it only fair to warn other potential guests. We arrived a couple of hours before check in at 3pm, and as expected our room was not ready but we were allowed to use the car park. We were told the people checking out of our room had only just left, which was a good hour and a half after the advised check out time, but we thought no more about it. We left the car and went off for lunch and to meet our friends, returning to the hotel at 5pm to be told our room wasn't ready! In fact it wasn't ready until 5.30pm and then only because my husband kept chasing it. The room, when we eventually got in it was lovely, big and very comfortable with lovely furnishings. We had a good nights sleep, the hotel was a little noisy as there was a big wedding going on but this didn't bother us. However, the next morning was not good. We arrived down for breakfast and waited a little while to be shown to our table. The dinning room was busy but nothing like full to capacity and it was clear there were nothing like enough staff on and those who were on, had very little idea of customer service. A smile, a good morning and an apology costs nothing and goes a long way. We ordered coffee and waited and waited and none came. The couple next to us were German or Dutch, the lady was on crutches with a foot in a cast and the man was having to do all the fetching and carrying. She asked where their coffee was four times whilst we were waiting and at one point the waitress snapped at her "we are very busy" which was so incredibly rude we felt extremely uncomfortable. When their coffee did arrive they pointed out to the waiter they had to chase and chase for it and he simply shrugged his shoulders and said "we are busy" and walked off. Not once did they receive an apology and the attitude of the staff was so rude and so disrespectful, we were ashamed of them. By now our coffee had finally arrived, lukewarm and not at all nice, so we got up to join the hot buffet queue to discover all that was on offer was grilled tomatoes and a whole load of empty plates and bowls! By then we had had enough and the thought of attempting to get some sense or service from the staff we had so far encountered was not something we wanted to try so we walked through to reception to complain and advise them we did not expect to be charged for breakfast. The receptionist was very apologetic and called in a colleague from the Dinning Room who repeatedly told us they were very busy - it clearly is the mantra for the hotel. As we checked out we noticed the couple who had been so badly treated arrive at reception and ask to see the manager and I really hope they got a proper apology. We walked down into Bournemouth and had a perfectly lovely breakfast at Frankie & Benny's with happy staff who smiled and were delightful. The Norfolk Royale has a long way to go in terms of customer services, and if due to being so busy with weddings that they can not provide a service for other guests then they really should not take the reservations. The experience really under-minded our weekend, and I resent this as my weekends away are precious to me and when I am charged a lot of money for something, I do expect to be treated with a degree of courtesy. Needless to say we will not be returning.

"Unique hotel"

Companion746969, Essex, United Kingdom 20/06/2019

This hotel is easy to find ( bright pink) and offers plenty of parking under the hotel but a little costly (£16 per night). Its central location is great for restaurants, shops, gardens and the beach. The hotel looks very old fashioned but is charming and its decor is unique and there is plenty to look at, especially around the reception and bar area. Decor is outdated and needs updating in a lot of areas but this adds to the hotels unique style. All staff were polite, efficient and helpful. Our room was clean and had all the amenities for a short break stay. I would definitely stay here again.

User 18/06/2019

Great location, amazing breakfast, cheerful staff! Combine this with superb rooms and we had a decent stay, but wow do you pay for it! Very tired hotel needing much renovation top to bottom! Extortionate £16 car parking charge which wasn't made clear on booking! Terrible wi-fi made searching for local amenities impossible in the room! Not worth £135! Improvements need to be made for us to think about visiting again in a town with such choice!

"Not disabled friendly"

2
JeanCheltenham, Cheltenham 15/06/2019

Be aware that parking is limited outside the front of the hotel whether you're disabled or not. There is a car park but very tight to get in/out and if you're a wheelchair user, also be aware that the only way into the hotel from the car park is by stairs - there isn't a lift! I believe that all spaces, which aren't that many, outside the front of the hotel should be solely for wheelchair disabled parking alone. At the very least the reception staff should make guests aware about the stairs. Ruined what could have been a lovely stay because in my husband's eyes it only heightened his disability and his dependence on me.

Norfolk_GM, General Manager at Norfolk Royale Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Jean, I am sorry to hear that you was not happy regarding the parking situation at the hotel. Unfortunately, due to the main car park location we are unable to make this accessible for disabled or less able guests, which is why we have the front forcourt avaliable to those who request. Unfortunately, without a request being made we are unable to know when a guest requires disabled parking. We endevour to help all guests where and when we can and there is also a ramp at the front of the building to help with access, Porters are on hand to help with all guests aswell. To conclude, I hope you will consider staying with us again in the future to allow us to make your stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. I thank you for your feedback. Kind regards,

Stayed at this hotel with friends for 1 night. Good location & pleasant exterior/reception area. We both booked double deluxe rooms, which were of a good size with comfortable beds. Found 2 beer bottle tops on the floor by the window, when reported the receptionist wasn't particularly bothered, she just said she would pass on my dissatisfaction. The TV was side-mounted & didn't swivel so not ideal if planning to watch whilst sat in bed. Tea/coffee making facilities but no teaspoons(!) & no complimentary water. The bathroom was very tired - cracked/stained tiles around the bath/behind sink, mediocre quality towels, only 1 glass provided, the Molton Brown toiletries didn't make up for the lack of quality elsewhere. Our friends' room had a ripped net curtain & a wine bottle in the minibar with the seal broken (they requested a new one but gave up waiting after an hour). The breakfast was lukewarm & congealed when we arrived at 10.15, it would appear to have been sat there all morning & not refreshed. The juices trickled out unless you tilted the container & didn't appear to be topped up unless requested. Most of the staff appeared to be disinterested & lacklustre. Will choose a Marriott next time which are true to their 4-star ratings.

Terrible. Booked before a bank holiday weekend and then told that room unavailable after taking our money and not giving back for 7 days! Apparently they do this a lot as have a procedure for it. Don't waste your money. They promised a £25 voucher as a sorry, but never received it.

Norfolk_GM, General Manager at Norfolk Royale Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Evey A I am so very sorry that there was an issue and your booking was cancelled at the hotel, as i understand this was booked via an agent and paid directly to them, unforunately the hotel have no control over the length of time they take to make a refund or what they offer as a guesture. I do hope they have sorted this for you now Once again, please accept my sincere apologies Kind Regards Rachel Painter-Scott General Manager

Victoria B, Bristol, United Kingdom 09/06/2019

For the money paid for a one night stay I was expecting a nicer room. Also I cannot believe that if you take the Molton Brown miniatures they charge you for a full bottle! What hotel charges for what most would consider 'freebies'. Ridiculous. Breakfast was extraordinarily average. No wow factor anywhere here.

Booked this hotel for a night over bank holiday weekend. Was phoned the day before to be told that the room was in fact NOT available. Couldn't process refund for 7 days so we had to try to book a hotel on the Friday for the Saturday night without or £120. It turned out brilliantly as we found the Pebble Beach hotel which was gorgeous, cheaper and nicer than this hotel, so all in all was please. Sheer luck that we were able to book somewhere (this was for our anniversary, our first weekend away without the kids in years!) and that we had the money to book another room.

"Sunday Carvery Lunch"

Anthony W, Bournemouth, United Kingdom 03/06/2019

Would have loved to stay over but unfortunately, could only get one day off work so decided to book a table for Sunday lunch. Got there early so had a pre lunch drink on the outside patio area, lovely. All staff were friendly and the restaurant staff in particular were very attentive, good to see so many staff in the restaurant. We plumped for the carvery, you get a choice of two meats from the available three, there was roast beef, roast pork with crackling to die for and roast turkey. The meat is carved and served on your plate then you add as many vegetables as you like, there was roast potatoes, roasted carrots and parsnips, a fennel, cabbage and French bean medley, red cabbage in red wine, roasted Mediterranean veg and cauliflower cheese and gravy. All were scrummy, I polished off the whole lot washed down with a glass of Malbec, recommend by one of the waiters. There was a choice of deserts and my wife and I settled for the Belgian chocolate cheese cake with a side of fruit compote. Have to say, the food was delicious, the service very good and the cost reasonable. One course was £10.95 two courses for £14.95 and considering that a Sunday carvery at Toby is now over £11 it's really competitive. All in all, a lovely lunch, well done to all the staff.

Well done to everyone who made it such a pleasurable experience.

My partner and I stayed here during our recent trip to Bournemouth, and we absolutely loved it. The staff were friendly and very helpful. Our room was clean and had everything we needed and wanted, including a lovely view overlooking the garden and pool. The pool was clean and had a jacuzzi next to it - which was perfect! The location of the hotel is great - close to the square, short walk to the beach through a beautiful park, and near some great restaurants - including Zizzi, Franco Manca, Pizza Express and our favourite from our trip, Cafe Thrive (which I've written a review for). Overall, the hotel was great and if you're booking a trip to Bournemouth look no further!

"Hotel OK but cost of parking was a shock"

3
Rob E, Bristol, United Kingdom 28/05/2019

Stayed for a single night last week for work. Arrived at about 9pm and was gone again by 8am, was charged £16 for parking which was a real shock. I won't stay here again because of the cost of the parking. Rooms were OK, a bit tired as a lot of the Best Western branded hotels seem to be. Staff were friendly and never had to wait for anything and breakfast was fine. Everything summed up it was OK, just the cost of parking will prevent me staying again.

Norfolk_GM, General Manager at Norfolk Royale Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for sharing your review, I am very sorry that you were dissapointed in your recent stay, we are currently undergoing an in house refurbishment programme, this unfortunately can be a lenghty process and we do try yo prioritise areas, we also have a large number of bedroom carpets being replaced at the end of June. I am sorry that you feel you would not stay again due to the parking costs, this should have been advised at the time of booking, I will bring this up with the front of house team. With family in Poole we have taken to staying at The Norfolk each time we stay over and it never disappoints. I've seen some reviews accuse this hotel of being tired but it's an old and very classy hotel. Yes it may not be to everyone's taste but I love it for its oldness, loving feeling, hard working staff, location, cleanliness and the massive deluxe rooms. This hotel always delivers. I absolutely love it and this time we were upgraded so that was an added bonus. We've never eaten evening meal here but we always have breakfast and it's superb. Thank you to everyone for making our stay once again perfect. You don't necessarily recognise us and we are low profile but we take it all in and will be back again in the near future I'm sure.

2nd visit to Norfolk Royale. Very friendly staff, lovely breakfasts. Comfy room & spacious. However, both lifts need replacing or refurbishing. They are tired & noisy. We had room 124 next to lift. Also on both stays I noticed lots of dust behind tv's. I suspect the staff don't have enough time to clean there?? Net curtains need washing too. Lovely quaint hotel but needs refurbishing now.

Norfolk_GM, General Manager at Norfolk Royale Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback, I am so very sorry that you encountered issues whilst staying with us, we are in the process of arranging replacement lifts, this as you can appriciate is a lengthy process and there is never a good time for the work to be carried out, I will investiage the noise you heard from the lift in room 124 as it is not next to it, it is a couple of doors down the corridoor on the opposite side to the lift. I have also noted your comments about the dust behind the TV, I have spoken with the housekeeping team as this is not acceptable. I do hope you will return in the future to see the improvements made Kind Regards RAchel Painter-Scott General Manager

"Champagne Afternoon Tea"

Frances G, bournemouth 22/05/2019

I have visited this hotel for afternoon tea on numerous occasions and it never disappoints! On this occasion I took my elderly mother for champagne afternoon tea and we both thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were seated in the little conservatory area which was cosy and intimate and although the view is nothing to write home about the greenery makes it a pretty outlook. The tea itself was delicious, lovely fresh sandwiches and a superb selection of cakes plus lovely fruit scones with clotted cream & jam. We enjoyed a perfectly chilled glass of fizz and a large pot of tea followed. The waiter Hunter was charming and he was attentive without being intrusive. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone and if you can get a groupon deal even better!!

4 Jan Norfolk Royal. Visited early Jan on the Gold deal for 2 nights. Arrived very early and enquired if there was any chance of my room being available early. As always the amazing staff on reception couldn't have been more helpful, checking with the cleaning team, and allowing me my room at 11am! This incredibly kind gesture was greatly appreciated as it meant I could work from my room rather than a coffee shop and be unencumbered by my luggage whilst grabbing lunch. We had a fab two night's stay. Staff always super helpful and friendly. Food was slightly better than previous year's and is amazing value on the Gold deal. Remember Fizzy Friday when bubbles of all types are half price!! The staff even ensured we had a space for our group in the bar after dinner with us all sitting together. Such good service! The rooms are a bit tired but exec rooms with king size are fine. We'll be back next year for sure!

"Good, but a bit tired"

3
petersB4840VU, Windsor, United Kingdom 18/05/2019

We stayed one night in room 122 - a room at the front of the hotel with a balcony. When we arrived we took the lift to our room. The lift was tiny and VERY sluggish. It needs replacing. The corridor floor was very noisy (inevitable in an elderly building). The room was a decent size with a large bathroom. There was a locked interconnecting door with the next room which, sadly, was far from sound-proof. Though the room itself, and bathroom, seemed clean enough, everything looked a bit tired. The balcony furniture and carpet definitely needed cleaning. The bed was very large and quite firm, though comfortable. The breakfast was very good, with a reasonable range of items to choose from the buffet. We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a decent, fairly central hotel in Bournemouth. However, it would benefit from a serious injection of money to brighten it up and modernise it.

Stayed here last night. Really nice hotel with a great first impression. The room was massive but slighty outdated! Everything you need is available for you and nothing seems to be to much trouble. Location is great with a great choice of venues surrounding the hotel. No taxis or buses required so it means you have more for an extra drink. I would visit again.

"Increasingly Disappointing...."

emsb1001, Bordon, United Kingdom 17/05/2019

My husband and I have not been away together for a long time - we decided to splash out and get a “luxury” suite and from the photos on the website we thought we had found the ideal hotel - the room cost us £202 for 1 night so we were expecting a beautiful, spacious, luxurious room .... we were given our key and headed to our room, on entry it was evident that we had been duped - the room had not been cleaned, we had food remnants all over the carpet, dirty used glasses and half used toiletries (and pubic hairs in the bath) if that wasn't enough the “suite” consisted of a small box room with a tatty sofa bed, peeling wallpaper and a very musty smell, the bathroom was very outdated, small and in some parts rusty and the main bedroom was tiny (again with peeling wallpaper) and outdated. On complaint the duty manager was very good and immediately arranged another room for us - however sadly it was a clean version of the first room - tiny, outdated, musty and if possible the bathroom was even worse with the narrowest bath imaginable (and again rusty) We were so disappointed - we really were looking for a night of luxury - the rooms given were no better tan a £70 room at a holiday inn. The manager was lovely, she was very understanding and I could tell this wasn't her first instance of deeply unhappy customers- she issued us a full refund as we felt so ripped off - we ended up driving the 2 hour journey home as we couldn't muster the enthusiasm to try and find a better hotel after our nightmare with this one. My one word of advise - if your looking for a romantic luxury getaway this hotel is NOT the place to go.... I do wonder if any of the pictured rooms on the web site actually exist....

Thank you for your feedback, I am so very sorry that we did not exceed your expectations, all guest satisfaction is important to us and we will be using the feedback you gave us to implement improvements to ensure we offer a better experience for guests in the future. Unforuntaley not all rooms are the same at the hotel, I can assure you though the pictures you will have seen are that of rooms at the hotel. It is unfortunate that the hotel only had one other room availble during the time you visited. We are currently carring out a refurbishement programme at the hotel, as you can appriciate this can be a lengthy process. I am pleased that the duty manager assisted you and you found her to be very understanding and arranged the refund of the accomodation and not charging for the food from the bar. I do hope you will consider staying with us again in the future, so that we have the chance to show the improvements we have made. Kind Regards Rachel Painter-Scott General Manager

"Afternoon Tea"

Sheila1964, Bournemouth, United Kingdom 12/05/2019

Four of us visited the Norfolk Royale yesterday for afternoon tea. I was pleasantly surprised by the hotel. Lovely decor and comfortable. Tea was served in the restaurant which was light and airy. The service was good and the welcome friendly and the food, although not a massive portion, was good and I loved the little cake selection. We'd asked for two servings with no smoked salmon and the alternative served was tomato and lettuce which I thought was a bit of a let down. And some of the sandwiches were a little dry on the edges but overall I was happy with our afternoon tea. The voucher deal we used is good value for money and included a glass of fizz.

"Efficient clean and in a good location"

The hotel is centrally located in the town and a short walk from the pier. The hotel is well maintained and the rooms clean and spacious with excellent room service. There is a small pool and a garden area. Under hotel parking is available at £16.00 per day in line with local NCP charging. The bar area is extensive, but like the dinning room lacks atmosphere. Also there is a limited choice of beer and no real ales. Overall our stay was pleasant and I would return again to the hotel. Excellent local bus service if you wish to leave the car at the hotel. Rooms on the side of the hotel can be noisy early morning.

Stayed here over the bank holiday weekend and we were not disappointed. The room was nice and warm upon our arrival, which is unusual for a hotel but we really appreciated it. The rooms are very clean and spacious with an abundance of complimentary teas/coffees etc. The bathroom was spotless and had a lovely array of molten brown toiletries to use. We used the pool area early in the morning and we were the only ones in there, the area is very pleasant and a relaxing experience. We did not eat in the hotel so cannot comment on this, but the restaurant area looked lovely and we would definitely like to try it next time. The hotel is an ideal location for shops, bars, restaurants, the beach and the gardens. There is lots to do in the surrounding areas, our first experience of Bournemouth was great and this hotel definitely made it even better. Without a doubt we would definitely return to the Norfolk Royale again, overall we had a great trip!

"Sunday Carvery"

We went to the inaugural carvery at the Norfolk, would like to praise the hotel and staff especially the chef, who I believe his name was phill. The food was outstanding, the meat was well cooked, the vegetables were fresh and tasty, the choice was more then ample, all over was outstanding. We decided to have the 3 course, me and my partner had beet root capachio and prawn cocktail for starters wich was sublime. We also had all meats for our mains (they all looked so good we couldn't say no to any) the beef was beautifully cooked as was the pork. The turkey was moist and flavoursome could not fault them. For desert we shared a cheese selection the portion was more then generous and superb cheeses. The surroundings of the restaurant were pleasant, clean and very presentable, Also having a personal touch with our waitress Inma, unlike the pub Carvery where it is cramped and you seem to be on the end of a conveyor belt. I felt the prices were very competitive and would not hesitate to go again or to recommend to my friends and colleagues.

"Excellent carvery - highly recommended"

428jayner, Bournemouth, United Kingdom 28/04/2019

We live in Bournemouth, very close to the Norfolk Royale, and pass it regularly. I've never stayed at the hotel but today we visited the restaurant for their Sunday carvery and were highly impressed. The meal was by far better than any Toby or pub carvery that we have had before. There was a choice of beef, pork or turkey, or a combination from these. The beef was deliciously tender and cooked medium, which was perfect. The pork was moist and also perfectly cooked. My partner had the turkey, which was a generous portion of good quality, tasty breast meat. There was a selection of crackling, stuffing balls and pigs in blanket which came along with the meat, and large Yorkshire puddings, which were light and crisp. The unlimited vegetable selection was a good variety and it felt like time and effort had been put into their preparation. They didn't taste “mass-produced” as some carvery veg do. There were buttery carrots, some of the best cauliflower cheese I've ever had, perfect roast parsnips, red cabbage, Mediterranean veg mix, roast potatoes, green beans. The gravy was a good consistency and not lumpy. We took the single course for £10.95 option, but could have opted for a two course or three course. There looked to be a good selection of starters and desserts, but to be honest the carvery was big enough to satisfy and leave us feeling full. The venue is clean and comfortable. As the first day that the carvery is open and as we are out of tourist season still, the restaurant was not packed but there were quite a few other diners. There was a large family group, so if you're dining in numbers I think it would be fine. The staff were very polite, attentive and helpful without being intrusive. We will definitely be back. Probably repeatedly.

"Great Location but a bit tired!"

3
User 23/04/2019

The hotel was situated in a very convenient location close to the town centre with easy access from the main road. Staff were very helpful and friendly and the breakfast was good. However, the hotel is desperately in need of investment, it looks as though a rolling improvement programme may be in place (our children stayed in a refurbished room) but our room was a bit tired. The decor was old fashioned, the bed was extremely uncomfortable and the bathroom was rotting!

My partner and I have just returned from an overnight stay at this lovely hotel. Well situated in the city centre, 10mins walk from the pier and beach, we hadn't really researched the hotel any more than trip advisor ratings. We were surprised at the value for money, facilities and the staff were just lovely and very attentive and helpful. Our room was really spacious, bed comfy, the shower and bath excellent, Molton Brown toiletries! (But I was a little sad We weren't allowed to take what was left of the small bottles of shower gel and shampoo home without a charge). This hotel has one of the best pool areas in hotels of similar starred status I've stayed at (quite a few!) and this sunny weekend, we could go from the pool to the garden area to dry off in the sun. Wonderful! It can't be said that everything about this hotel is 100% perfect, with some areas a little tired, in need of fresh paint or less squeaky floorboards, but it is a heritage characterful property and I would much rather chose this than a recently built shiny chain type. We will always go back to Bournemouth due to friends and family there BUT we would go just to stay again at this hotel! Very impressed indeed! Thank you to the team there for making our stay really enjoyable.

Yes the hotel is old and properly could do with an upgrade , but it has history and Charactor and did not take anything away from our stay . The queen room was spacious lovely and clean with complimentary Molton Brown products , and a stocked mini bar . Could not asked for much more . All the staff where fantastic , work hard morning , noon and night . Good breakfast , lovely meal in the evening , went that little extra mile with a cream egg on Easter Sunday with breakfast . Afternoon tea is a must . fab location great for beach , shops , night life would definitely stay again . Yes parking is £16 a night , your car is safe and the price is the same all over Bournemouth .

"Worth the trip!"

Just finishing up our 2 night stay here at the Norfolk and for a last minute break away, it's been worth it! I traveled with my husband and 2 children under 5. The hotel is very close to town, the beach and lots of restaurants, great to be able to walk to places. The hotel itself is old and dated in some areas but it's clean and spacious; we upgraded to a premier room which was more than big enough for the kids, (sofa bed provided by hotel and we brought our own travel cot), nice big bathroom although the room was quite warm. Our room was facing the main road so a lot of noisy traffic,(motorbikes mainly), therefore could not leave the window open - ask for a room at the back if you can. (I would have asked to swap rooms if we stayed for longer) Breakfast was simple but ok, pool is smaller than it shows on photo but sufficient enough and nice and warm for the kids. Car park is underground, expensive for £16 a night but no other choice. All in all, would visit Bournemouth again but might try another hotel / apartment as I think it may be cheaper if we were to stay for longer.

Usually stay at the Best Western Royale at Bournemouth but was booked up so tried the Norfolk. First issue £16 for 24 hour parking, the Royale charges £4 and nothing for Best Western Platinum members. I booked the executive queen room, which was large but head room was a problem in places due to the roof. The room was very tired, the light shades looked as if they have been there for 20 years without cleaning, the windows inside and out was filthy. The bathroom was relatively new but was not particularly clean full of grime. Bed was lumpy and did not have a particular good night. Now the beakfast, I travel a lot through work so I know a good beakfast when I see one. This was not one of them! It was self service and the food had been stud around for a long period, the sausages being like bullets. The juices was all empty had to late for them to be filled (had nearly finished by the time this had been done) complained to reception about the experience, she said she would tell the manager, also complained about the parking again to be told it was nothing to do with the hotel even though the car park sits in the hotel basement. If you want a Best Western in Bournemouth book the Royale, much better parking, breakfast and the rooms are clean.

Lovely centrally located hotel, all the staff we encountered were friendly and professional. Stayed in a family room, the room was spacious and suited our needs for 3 of us. We enjoyed the use of the heated swimming pool, which very few of the other guests used. Our booking included breakfast, there was plenty of variety of hot and cold food. The car park provided ample parking, whilst pricy this is comparable to car parks in the area. The only negative is the dated decor, however everything was clean, tidy and functional.

User 26/03/2019

My husband surprised me by booking a night in the honeymoon suite at this hotel. The outside of the hotel doesn't do it justice at all; the inside is beautiful! When I walked in, I felt like I had just stepped into a Disney palace. The reception area wonderfully decorated with a big staircase. The lifts aren't the best and are slow. (Dont go in them if you have a phobia of lifts as they are very small). As soon as we stepped into the honeymoon suite I couldn't believe my eyes. It is basically your own apartment. There is a hallway, with a spacious bathroom on the left. In there is a large shower, large sink, toilet and a huge jacuzzi bath with a tv in the wall! There are Molton brown toiletries that smell incredible and heated towel rails. The bedroom is beautiful decorated with a giant bed!! It is very modern, with a sofa, seating area and even a walk in wardrobe. The wardrobe has everything you need - hairdryer, safe, iron & ironing board. The tv was quite hard to use as it was motion activated & we couldn't find a menu on the tv to see what was on and when. We ordered room service as we really wanted the feel of luxury and it didn't disappoint. The staff were so helpful and their food is delicious. Definitely recommend the pizza, it was unreal. I've seen some reviews about the noise from the town. We could only hear people from the bars if we had the window open in the wardrobe. When it was shut we didn't hear anything. This hotel is just amazing, and we will 100% be returning!

"Really tired - not 4 star"

1
User 18/03/2019

We stayed on Saturday night for an event that we were attending, and stayed in room 226 on the second floor. As we were running late for the event, I didn't really have time to complain or ask to get moved. The hotel: The hotel isn't just tired - its exhausted and it definitely isn't 4 star. It needs a complete overhaul. The room: The room was quite large but very dark and it hadn't been thoroughly cleaned. The bath panel was broken so hanging off, there was dirt and hair in the corners of the bathroom, the tiles were cracked. The towels that were provided were torn and frayed. And the surfaces were dusty. I was looking for a pen and opened the drawer next to the bed which was full of dirty tissues and old kids activity packs. The event that we attended went reasonably well - the food was OK considering that it was cooked en masse. For one night it was bearable - would be pretty peeved if I was here for longer.

"Disappointing Return but still great"

billybluehat, Blandford Forum, United Kingdom 01/03/2019

We have been here many times and always enjoy our stay. This visit was very disappointing. The check in was not good. We always arrive early and understand that the rooms will not be ready until 3 pm, but normally do the paper work to save time for everyone arriving at 3 pm. The receptionist was very insistent that she would do nothing until that time. I returned at 2 pm to read the paper and a very helpful lady member of staff said that it was no problem and our room was ready. The food here never disappoints which was true until Saturday night when the service was very very slow. There was an additional party in another room obviously stretching the kitchen and staff. I received the wrong order as did an adjacent table. We were addressed by a waitress as “guys”. This maybe picky, but in a lovely English Hotel you don't want Americanisms creeping in. We did not get our tea and coffee order at breakfast. The lift really does need repairing. The door is sluggish and the lift is very slow. However. We love this Hotel, the staff are brilliant, with one exception! It is clean cosy, lovely. It is great value for money, But a bit more staff trading on the front desk may be prudent. But al in all no real complaints but thank you for the stay. I hope my comment on the first receptionist is addressed. She is the Hotels face

Arrived in Bournemouth by rail, taxi from the station approx. 5 mins only. Easy check in with reception staff polite and efficient. We stayed in an executive room on the third floor, easy to get to as there is 2 lifts, very clean and tidy, everywhere in the hotel. We were also on a DBB basis, food first class and plenty of choices, and so was the service in the restaurant. There is a swimming pool, which we did not use, and car parking is available at £16 a day. Very close to Bournemouth square where yo can get buses to just about anywhere in the area,( and lovely gardens to walk thru) and the town centre is also close by. The pier and beach is about a 7/10 minute walk from the hotel and we were so lucky with the spring type weather in February.

Stayed in twin room as treat to myself. Was upgraded to a beautiful room on top floor. Comfortable bed, huge tv, shower lovely. Toiletries in bathroom very welcome. Ate in lounge one evening. Good value in a relaxed setting. Breakfast was plentiful with lots of choice. Didnt use the pool. As i was mostly on my own, i felt safe in the hotel. An incident with my room and another guest was dealt with swiftly and to my satisfaction. It's the second time I've stayed here. Will definitely stay again. Love the decor in the hotel.

We stayed at the Norfolk for three nights. On arrival we were advised that the standard twin room we'd booked had been upgraded to a deluxe for no extra charge, which was nice. We chose the Norfolk following a friends recommendation as we wanted a hotel with a pool and a nice lounge area. Our room was very nice, comfy beds, lots of pillows, tasteful decor. Only minor issue was that it was very warm, even with the radiator turned off, we had to have the windows wide open all day and night (in February). The lounge area was nice, with plenty of comfy seats, the enclosed veranda area was cooler and also had comfy seating. We requested seats on the veranda for our afternoon tea, which was delicious. The breakfasts, bar food and afternoon tea were all lovely and good portions. One of our group has a food allergy and this was catered for with no issues. Staff were excellent, very friendly and hard working. Rooms were very clean, girls on reception were very efficient and the restaurant and bar staff were all very good too. Lewis in particular was superb - loved his attention to detail when setting out the afternoon tea! Would definitely recommend.

Stayed in family room with wife and 2 children. Hotel was way too hot. Think this is because a lot of elderly stay here and maybe they need the temperature at 30 degrees. Staff were friendly. Room was clean and spacious. Pros: Hotel was clean. Friendly staff. Good size family room. Cons: WAY too hot. Smelt like an old peoples home. Dated decor.

Stayed for one night during a trip to Bournemouth. The breakfast was lovely, great selection and attentive staff. We did not use the pool facilities but they looked good too. The hotel is good for what we paid and the room was big and kept very clean.

User 31/01/2019

Family of 20 enjoyed a weekend together at this hotel. The food and service was excellent and the staff showed a constant willingness to provide everything that was required. The rooms were very comfortable and well appointed. The spa facilities were of a high standard and enjoyed by all members of the family.

"Lovely Hotel and Excellent Customer Service"

SomersetJoppie, Somerset 29/01/2019

We booked a special weekend deal and also took our dog. Reception arranged for our luggage to be taken to our room - it was a big room, very comfortable and very clean, with two arm chairs and a mini bar. We had intended to leave our dog in the car when we had dinner as we knew in advance he wasn't allowed in the restaurant. In the event that wasn't a good option so we asked if we could have dinner in the bar but from the restaurant menu. Nothing was too much trouble for the wonderful staff and they looked after us superbly in the bar - for both breakfasts and dinners. The food was superb - a different menu each evening. My husband and I had different things but they were all lovely. All the staff were very friendly and helpful and we cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. A big thank you to all the staff!

"Best afternoon tea"

sultanofswerve, Zhuhai, China 23/01/2019

Superb champagne. Lovely fresh sandwiches. Great cakes, best selection I've had. Lovely scones, few too many raisins for my liking though. Cream was good. Jam wasn't the best quality and portion was about half what it could be. Lovely tea. Good friendly staff, but could have been a bit more attentive. For the money though, easily the best afternoon tea.

"A charming Edwardian hotel. And the Art Nouveau staircase window is stunning!"

BobblenoseWarwicks, Banbury, United Kingdom 23/01/2019

Impressive exterior, well-furnished public rooms, a large, warm, comfortable bedroom with plenty of lights to read by (a rarity in many "modern" hotels) & a large bathroom with a REAL plug in the washbasin (not one of the trendy mechanisms that don't keep the water in the basin). Like another reviewer we could hear music coming up from the restaurant, but when we mentioned it to the Duty Manager he offered to turn it down. We found ALL the staff to be friendly, efficient & obliging. In particular we found the 3 receptionists to be delightful! We can't understand the negative comments made about them by other reviewers. The breakfasts & dinners were excellent & thanks to the Gold Bar offer we felt that our 2-day stay was very good value. Drinks, however, were on the expensive side, as was the £16 per day charge n the hotel's underground car park.We noticed that the nearby NCP car park had similar charges - I suppose it's what you expect in a city like Bournemouth which is full of office-blocks.

"Not the worst hotel I've ever stayed at, but probably the most disappointing"

1
User 22/01/2019

The hotel looked nice enough from the outside, kind of 19thC charm. The lobby seemed similar. But from there, it was all downhill.Staff at check-in weren't good. Not actively bad, but kind of indifferent. Service was slow, and when I finally got to check in, they wanted to take payment despite the fact I had prepaid in full. (Not anything that would normally be an issue, but the first of a long string of things they got wrong.) This stayed the same throughout my stay. The biggest issue was noise in the room. Music leaked through the floor from the bar below. I asked for another room. They said that other rooms weren't very nice, and they didn't want me to move, just to be unhappy with the new room. Not much of a choice. As they said the music would stop at 10:30, I decided to stay. (It came back on at 8am. Not a problem for sleep, but annoying when I wanted to work or relax in the room.)Next, they charged someone else's room to my card. At first, they said they couldn't find the charge. Eventually, they figured out where the charge had come from and said it wasn't their fault. They did reverse it, but given their record, I didn't have much faith in them doing it right. If not for the fact my phone alerted me to the charge, I don't know if I would have ever even noticed it.There were a number of other small issues that I probably would have let pass if not for the bigger problems. The room wasn't cleaned well. (OK when I arrived, but not well tidied during the stay.) The tub didn't drain. The sheets and towels weren't very nice. The mattress was springy. And the keycard for the room failed if it went anywhere near a phone or another card, so basically in any of my pockets.I'm not comparing this to some five-star hotel. My usual hotel is quiet, comfortable, and slightly cheaper (if a bit modern and lacking in character). It just happened to be fully booked on this occasion. If that ever happens again, I'm going to a different Plan B.

"Afternoon tea"

3
Bn1611, Bournemouth, United Kingdom 21/01/2019

We came here for afternoon tea after it was gifted by some friends. When we were sat down we were given a glass of prosecco each followed by tea or coffee. There was only one option for tea. The afternoon tea stand was then brought out. The sandwiches was were quite standard, the cakes were very dry. It was unfortunate we found a hair in one of the cakes but eventually we were given a plate of complimentary cake to make up for it. The afternoon tea is really basic and standard nothing special. I was glad I hadn't paid for it myself.

This is our 4th visit to the Norfolk Royale in Bournemouth. We come every January when they offer a special rate for Dinner, bed and breakfast. It's a 4 star hotel with swimming pool, sauna and steam room & has very pleasant public areas. The location couldn't be more central. Comfortable, well appointed rooms;ours had a bath with shower over, which we prefer. And all this for only £40 per person per night! Incredibly good value,I'm sure you'll agree. The previous head chef left last year but has been enticed back I'm pleased to report & the dinners are truly superb. I was very impressed with the well-balanced menus, the quality of the meat and the freshness of the vegetables. A rarity these days! The wine list was sensibly written and prices fair. Don't miss the opportunity to book your minimum 2-night stay. You won't be disappointed. Jane & Stephen Skinner Bishop's Stortford Hertfordshire 18th January 2019

darrenah, Banbury, United Kingdom 15/01/2019

I've stayed in many of Bournemouth's hotels over the years and have to say that i wasn't overly impressed with the Norfolk Royale. The room was a little tired and dated, along with the rest of the place! On the plus side, the breakfast was very good.

"Good position .... but"

3
mitchell39j, Bexhill-on-Sea, United Kingdom 13/01/2019

I would not rate this Hotel as 4*. Yes, the position is good for accessibility into the town but that is as far as it goes. We upgraded over New Year at a cost of £40.00 per night, definitely not worth it. We had a large comfortable bed, the bathroom was certainly not luxurious, in fact you could see and hear the outside from the bathroom window frame! If you have any mobility problems then I would seriously suggest you book a room near the ‘front' lift. Neither of the lifts are reliable and in fact the rear one became out of use during our stay which caused a serious problem for my Husband. The staff worked hard but the reception area definitely needs improvement, from dress, manner and knowledge of what is actually going on. The Hotel comes into the ‘was lovely once' category. I have read other reviews and many people have enjoyed their stay but this review is a true reflection of our stay.

"Good break"

pesue1, Nuneaton, United Kingdom 07/01/2019

Came with friends for 2 night, 3 day break. Staff were very friendly and helpful, a nice touch to have parking for our less able friends at the front of the hotel reserved, parking otherwise is under the hotel with steps up to the hotel no lift. And as is the way now a payment to park your car. Our room was large, well equipped, comfortable bed, the food choice was good and tasty. As with a lot of hotels now it is getting tired, but well worth a visit on the deal we got. The position is also close to the town centre. Definitely coming again.

"Great location"

denise247, Northampton, United Kingdom 07/01/2019

Our second visit to this hotel. Food is excellent. However, we found on this trip that housekeeping left a little to be desired. Not overtly bad but lack of attention to detail e.g. no spoons with the tea and coffee, toiler roll not replaced, tissue box not replenished. We also found the reception staff rather brusque

"Good in parts."

gadabout70, Colchester, United Kingdom 06/01/2019

Paid to be upgraded to "garden view" room on a deal. No garden just roof of pool and roof of dining room, both very tired, dirty glass. Whole building in need of love and attention. At least our sash widow opened!! Need to as radiator VERY hot and had to be attended to by a charming maintenance man---who appeared very quickly after we complained to reception. Large bedroom but miniscule bathroom--knees nearly touched wall when sitting on toilet! Tape hot water scalding hot--and NO WARNING NOTICE. Think this should be noted by management. Management should also look into allocated parking at front of hotel. Prepaid, our name on a notice on arrival but on returning from Portsmouth someone in our space. Reception did not seem to know how to cope--as car was there presumably driver in hotel? Told to park in someone else's space, surely a recipe for disaster. Compared with reception staff in dining room great, although seemed to be short staffed at times. Breakfast a bit dreary. Sad dried out bacon and sausages. Only bread cut brown/white, suitable for toasting but no rolls, surely these could easily be baked on the day (as we do at home!). Croissants however fresh even on Sunday! Main course at dinner--huge portions. Safer choice was fish. Nice puddings. Just to mention pool. It is really just a large plunge pool not suitable for real swimming. Full of children anyway as it was still school holidays. This was a real disappointment. Would not stay unless a very good deal, which is what we started with but do not think our upgrade of an extra £25.00 per day for a "superior, garden view" room for our 3 day stay was worth the extra, hence low rating.

"Christmas Break"

SheilaE47, Treorchy, United Kingdom 02/01/2019

Customer service here is second to none. The staff, housekeeping, reception and restaurant, could not have been more attentive. We had a lovely room overlooking the garden which was spotlessly clean. We enjoyed this hotel so much that we are considering rebooking very soon.

"New Years Eve"

318tonyg318, Cricklade, United Kingdom 01/01/2019

Stayed for 2 nights, New Years Eve and Day using a standard room on a room only rate. This cost £216 and is significantly higher than normal due to the bank holiday. The reception staff were helpful. The room was a decent size with tv , mini bar, iron & board. The bathroom whilst small had basin toilet bath & separate shower and was nice and warm. Room Tip. Leave the central heating on low or turn off as the room gets incredibly hot. Bought breakfast on the first morning. Reasonable choice but nothing special. We were out most of the time but I noted there was entertainment in the lounge in the evening and there was the possibility of using their swimming pool. Would return but only when normal rates available.

"Unsatisfactory"

User 31/12/2018

Stayed here after our wedding with many friends and family. The people on reception seemed inexperienced many of my family had charges to their rooms that they didn't use. There was also a lost booking. We were in the honeymoon suite and the shower didn't work and there were barking dogs next door. The lift didn't stop on our floor and seemed unsafe. Outside there was a rat which I informed reception about. The location is good but hotel very over priced . My complaints were met with scowls and a hurried apology. Def not value for money

"A nice old fashioned hotel"

123Jacquie123, Gloucester, United Kingdom 30/12/2018

This is the 4th time we have stayed here and normally I can't say enough how much I love it here, however this time I was left a little disappointed. We ordered a premium room which we always do and having stayed in room 123 last time we were excited about our stay. This time however we were put into room 121 which was nice but didn't give that wow factor you hope for when paying for a premium room. It was smaller and darker than expected and I couldn't help feeling like it was more like an overflow room. We used the pool as normal, no complaints however the ladies changing room wasn't very clean and upon returning the following morning was in exactly the same state so obviously hadn't been cleaned overnight either. Breakfast was good. All in all, I love this hotel, it's classy and has a lovely feeling to it, however for the money we spent, I can't help wondering if this time we got value for money.

"Great hotel, with excellent staff."

Risky20, Staffordshire 30/12/2018

We have stayed here three times this year, for three nights each time. It has a great central location, and convenient parking facilities. The staff (from the managers down) provide an excellent service. The food (both breakfast and dinner) are a very good standard. There was an occasional queue at the very busy breakfast times; but it was evident that the staff were working efficiently to get people to a table quickly. A special mention to Demitri and Max (both super-efficient and friendly) always prepared to go the extra mile.

Booked this hotel for an overnight stay and visit to the Christmas Tree Wonderland. The hotel had a great central location right on the doorstep of all the action! The welcome at reception was friendly & helpful. We had a superior room which was spacious and tastefully decorated. We only stayed overnight and didn't have breakfast so can't comment on the restaurant or bar area, although it all looked comfortable and inviting. I would definitely recommend and come back again.

"Champagne afternoon tea"

5
barrye147, Poole, United Kingdom 28/11/2018

What a great afternoon tea . Well chilled champagne excellent efficient service from Max the bar / lounge waiter . The hotel is decorated for Xmas and looks great the lounge was really warm and cosy on a very wet windy afternoon. Max was polite and attentive asked when we wanted tea straight away or after the Champagne and food service and then delivered perfectly what we had asked for even to the return to check we were ok and again to offer a top up for the tea.
