The hotel was clean and felt more like an independent hotel rather than a chain. It had a terrace on the second floor which we wished we had spent more time on in the morning for breakfast. The hotel was in a lively part of Bolgona but away from the bus centre. From our room which was located at the back of the hotel rather than the busier front part, we could hear the evening church bells. One evening we heard them play 'Ave Maria'. The staff were helpful and cheery. I would stay here again if I visited Bologna and recommend it as a charming and quiet hotel in a lively part of Bologna.
Nice hotel in great location close to the two towers Excellent views of the towers from the terrace Good breakfast and friendly staff throughout Many restaurants within easy walking distance Only issue is walls appear to be paper thin so the noise from the kids in the next room was a bit disruptive
We travelled from Rome for a one night in Bologna at the Best Western Hotel San Donato. The hotel is situated right next to the two towers. It has a lovely rooftop area over looking them, with free coffee between certain times. Our room was spacious, comfortable and clean. Breakfast was extra 7 euros each, it was great value for money. Lots of cold meats and cheese, croissants, cereal, cakes, yogurts, fruit juice, coffee and a selection of cooked items. The staff were friendly and very helpful. I have already recommended this hotel to a friend for her visit to Bologna
I've stayed in hundreds of hotels around the world and have written quite a lot of reviews in booking.com and tripadvisor.com. This is the first time I report an outstandingly bad case. We arrived on January 22, 2020 and immediately found some problems in the room: the wash-basin was full of water and the water did not go to drain at all (did the maid ever clean it??), a similar – but not so serious - case in the shower, and the bathroom door handle was loose and nearly fell. They did repair the things but did not apologize. The next day in the morning I found that the bathroom door handle was not properly fixed and got loose again but decide to report it after excursion. Coming to the hotel at 2:30pm we found our room not ready yet. I asked the receptionist that I would like to talk to manager about all problems. The manager was Alfredo Riccioti. He refused to accept anything: that we had problems yesterday, that the room had to be ready by 2pm - as stated in the hotel info, and when I showed the loose room handle he accused me of breaking the handle and threatened to charge me for this. And all of this despite that other hotel persons confirmed what I said. I never saw such an arrogant and ignorant person in my life! Finally after I had said that I was ready to call police he calmed down and offered a new room. But never apologized. As the manager refused to give me the name of his boss I called Customer Service of Best Western hotels to raise a claim about the unacceptable behavior of the manager. The claim was written and they called me back 30 min later. They did apologize “for inconvenience” but not for the behavior of the manager, calling it “misunderstanding” - actually they closed ranks. And perhaps this is the worst of all – they consider such behavior acceptable! I was asked for email address but never got any response to my claim. For me all this is NOT acceptable and certainly that was my last stay in Best Western hotels and I strongly recommend to all to avoid staying in San Donato hotel in Bologna. Unless you like such a “service” and “misunderstanding”. P.S. The hotel is rather worn out. Wi-Fi is free but practically does not work in the rooms – you have to reconnect 10-20 times a day.
We stayed here for two nights and were somewhat underwhelmed. This is as 3 star of a hotel as you can get, contradictory to some of the reviews. The highlights (and only real positives) of the hotel are the location and the front desk staff; right in the heart of the city (Jewish ghetto) near several restaurants and coffee shops, with kind and helpful staff to greet you. We stayed in a standard room that looked like it hadn't been renovated since the 80's. Stiff bed with almost no lighting in the room, but we spent very little time there anyway. The room temperature was very hot though, regardless of the thermostat level. We later found out that the hotel turns on the heat during the winter months, and air conditioning was not available. We slept with the window open, but the room still felt like a sauna at times. There are better hotel options for this price in Bologna, but we wanted a central location to be able to get to most places by foot. It's fine if you're in town for one night to see the sights, but don't expect a comfy bed - compare it to other Best Westerns in the US. Overall, a very average hotel (3 stars) that offers a good base location.
Though tricky to navigate to in the rental car, once there it's difficult to ask for a better location. Walk out the front door and you are straight into an the historic Piazzetta Achille Ardigò. This square is home to Chiesa di San Donato, a church built in 1454. ....It is a further 2 minute walk to reach the centre of activity of the old city - Piazza di Porta Ravegnana with Piazza Maggiore not much further on. Very helpful reception staff who talked us through by phone on how to navigate the tricky lanes and roads to reach their front door. Inside is a fully staffed reception. There are excellent lounges and balcony areas equipped with tables and chairs to sit outside and enjoy the atmosphere. A bar inside assists with this... Our room also sported a balcony with views of the magnificent "leaning" towers in the city and was very neat, tidy and daily serviced. When we did decide to eat breakfast there, the array of choices and the quality was excellent. All dining staff were also of a high standard. Secure parking is available but costly at €24 per night. The hotel is in an old but fully renovated Italian Palazzo - Palazzo Malvasia which dates to the 13th century. One of the better places we have stayed and can definitely recommend.
This is one of the best hotels price wise i have stayed in. Attention to detail is excellent . Staff are very friendly and cannot do enough for you. Rooms are lovely very very clean. Location is superb very central. Breakfast is delicious . Cannot recommend this hotel enough. Would definately return
While the view is great, and the website says there is AC, what they fail to mention is that it is SEASONAL AC. The maintenance man advised us that AC is shut off in September since it's supposed to be cold in October. Instead we were offered to open our windows and smell the smoke and hear the loud noise from the patio cantina in front of the hotel. The noise stopped at 3:00am right before we woke up at 4:00am for our flight. Not the best way to spend your final night in Italy. A friendly note: They offer ear plugs in the bathroom Just an FYI.
Just got back from a 3 night stay as BW San Donato. There are some good and bad points and if you familiarise yourself before booking you should be fine. Pro's: Great location only a short walk away from the main tourist sites. Staff was very friendly and helpful. Hotel was clean. Con's: The sound proofing is very poor. You can easily hear other guests, plumbing from other rooms and people outside on the street. The hotel actually provided ear plugs for you to use. The air con had been switched off throughout the hotel and the room was very hot which made it uncomfortable to sleep in. We asked if this could be turned on and was told it wasn't possible. The room decor was dated and could do with being updated. Bathroom was quite dark and the extractor fan was not working. Despite stating tea/coffee machine in the room it was in fact in the hotel bar, not a major problem but if you are relaxing in your room it's inconvenient. If you can accept the above you will be fine. I would struggle to say the hotel is a 4 star, it's more in line with a 3 star.
Italy is beautiful in the fall, so much that this hotel turns off the air conditioning. What does that mean for you as a guest? It means you hope that the 1 window catches the cool night air, but truly, all it catches are the college kids screaming in the streets until 4am. It is 12:35 am, I lie here awake listening to the live music and them scream and cheer and breaking of plates. After long days of touring and walking Italy, you just want/need rest at nights to get up early again to do more. Even if the air conditioning worked, the music and people are blasting everywhere. If you want the VERY ACTIVE night life of college kids, you found your place. If you want rest from your family vacation, this is hell. I give it the 2nd star bc during the day, it is very easy walking at the square and their breakfast is great. Other than that, they owe us hours of sleep. Never.Again.will.we.return. Ps.. if you have never traveled Italy before, you will be in shock with bologna. Although gorgeous and hauntingly style middle aged buildings, the graffiti everywhere will sadden you. More graffiti in this city than Rome or Naples. It's a shame they allowed the kids to destroy so much history and beauty.
This is a great place to stay whilst visiting the wonderful city of Bologna. Central ( near the twin towers) and surrounded by great restaurants and shops. The breakfast has an excellent choice and food is so fresh. All the staff are so delightful and nothing is too much trouble for them, especially Rhoda x as a group we enjoyed our stay enormously Thank you all
Stayed one night at this hotel on our way through to Pisa. Shared a twin room with a friend. Reception is quite stark and basic so not very welcoming but the reception staff were helpful and friendly. Our room was very small and there was not enough room for two suitcases. It was clean, as the bathroom was, just a bit dated and in need of renovation. Night tome was very noisy as there is a cafe/bar right outside the hotel and I noted a cocktail bar is due to open next door to the hotel, which will make it even noisier I think. The streets around the hotel are rather grubby and dirty and when passing archways and recesses I could smell urine. Neither my friend nor I felt that we would be comfortable walking around at night, that is contrary to other towns we stayed in Italy. Don't feel I would go back and stay at the hotel again, even for one night.
After we eventually found our way to the hotel we found it was very centrally located and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The parking costs seemed a bit high considering we were staying at the hotel, but it was nice and convenient. The rooms are well stocked, but basic and in desperate need of a re-vamp considering the cost. Bathroom was a good size, though the shower was small and it took about 5 mins of running the shower to get hot water. The balconies have no tables and chairs, but the terrace does and the views of the city are lovely from up on the fourth floor.
The brand Best Western has always had a negative or cheap stigma to their brand. This was anything but that. It was awesome and would stay at any BW! This hotel changed my views of the brand and the quality of the hotels.
What a lot of moaners write these reviews! We stayed at this hotel for six nights in August. All the staff are extremely polite and attended to our needs without question. The inclusive breakfast has traditional European fayre which provides something for everyone. You can even enjoy your muesli on the terrace overlooking the two towers! Rooms are very clean. We found the cleaning staff very conscientious. So the HVAC is not this year's model. It works and was not noisy or leaking. What would enhance this hotel is more facilities on the roof terrace. I daresay this is a task in hand. But when they have installed a roof bar, sun shades, more lounging chairs and spray mists, expect to pay double. Personally, I didn't come to Bologna for the hotel. The San Donato is well located, more than adequate and manned by friendly and approachable staff. What more should a hotel do?
I stayed here for three nights with family. The positives ; (1) great location right in the middle of the historic center of Bologna (2) we booked a family room which was very spacious with two bedrooms and a living area. Other than this, the list of negatives was endless : (1) very poor cleaning of the rooms. We checked in and entered the room to find a pizza box pizza in it from previous guests. The room cleaning throughout our stay was also very poor (2) leaking air-conditioning units (that is, pools of water on the floor). We reported this many times but nothing happened, except placing a little water container beneath the A/c units (3) One day no toilet paper was left for us. We had to phone many times for housekeeping to get some. On another day, all the bath towels left for us were soaking wet ! (4) The hotel wifi is a big joke....probably went on/off a thousand times during the three days we were there. Funnily enough, the hotel sent us the wifi user name and password a day before we arrived. It would have been great if instead they made sure it works. (5) The hotel amenities (furniture, reception area, carpets etc.) need a drastic refurbishment For the price we paid for the room, this was clearly not value for money.
I have mixed feelings about this hotel. First the good. It is in a great location, just a few blocks from oldtown Bologna, adjacent to several attractions like the twin towers, the jewish sector/temple, Cattedrale di San Pietro and the University. The staff were very professional and very supportive. The Hotel was a beautiful building when new and had wonderful views of the Bologna sky line from the terrace off the bar. The bad is that - the HVAC was completely overwhelmed by the 90+ degree heat, I was never able to reduce the temperature of the room below 80 degrees from early afternoon until 3 AM. - the main elevator was under an extensive repair requiring us to walk up 21 stairs to our 3rd floor room - the bathroom only had a tub and handheld shower and the temperature of the water in the shower changed multiple times during use. So, if you are not traveling in Summer this a wonderful hotel to stay due to the location and staff. Just be warned that it has its challenges.
While we have stayed at the San Donato many times, we continue to return because of the great Staff and the great location. Located about 200 meters from the Due Torre (two towers) and about a 10 minute walk from phenomenal shopping, restaurants, and bars.
This hotel needs a serious renovation. Rooms are outdated, noisy, (specially the doors slapping..) not secured. Staff is grumpy and not friendly at all. Wifi is hectic. We stayed one night only in a room with tiny window looking on nothing but a wall Nevertheless the hotel has a great location downtown next to the heart of te city. A pity that hospitality is forgotten, no fun, no joy, no trill, no taste, it looks like a Soviet hotel ... worst eastern !
Our room was clean and comfortable, but the location is hard to beat. Only a short stroll to the Two Towers and many food, gelato, drink options. Also convenient for exploring the University district. The staff were very friendly and helpful, ensuring we had a timely taxi to the railway station.
Excellent location in this wonderful city Near the towers and square with plenty of good restaurants near by . The rooms were clean but a bit basic and dated , staff were friendly and helpful value for money
We didn't stay here but we were looking for a rooftop bar in Bologna. Found this place online. We arrived at 5.15pm and were told the rooftop terrace would open at 6pm. No problem. We came back at 6pm. Then we were told there is a 10€ charge per person to visit the rooftop. Fine. Paid up although we haven't been charged this anywhere else in Europe. Then there was a complicated method of getting to the roof. You are given a ticket. Then you take the lift to the second floor where you order your drinks. No wines on the menu except Prosecco. Then you return to the lift and press the Down button (there is no up button). When the lift arrives you get in and press the third floor button. On the third floor you follow the corridor around (no signs) to an outside terrace which leads to stairs and finally the rooftop. The was one other table occupied. There is no bar so if you want more drinks you have to make your way back to the second floor. The view is fantastic over Central Bologna. The staff were lovely when they arrived ten minutes later with our drinks. This place could be packed every night if Best Western would invest some money and cut the surcharge. Instead it is deserted.
Friendly reception staff who handled our sundry reservations patiently and with precision. Tidy double room, good AC, spacious. Very good breakfast, lots of options. The understaffed bar had trouble managing our orders, but we were MANY.
Didn't stay at San Donato although the location of the hotel is clearly very good, just steps away from the Due Torri. But even if you are not staying there, their rooftop bar on the second floor is worth a visit for some pricier drinks than the average in Bologna but killer views of the heart of the city.
We had a good time there in the middle of everything. The single rooms were very very small and it was quite expensive compared to double rooms. Comfortable bed. Clean. Fantastic breakfast and good service.
We were here for 3 nights recently and it was a wonderful located hotel. The rooms are a bit dated but well worth the stay. On the roof you can see the beautiful skyline of towers in Bologna. Breakfast was very good as were the coffees! I would recommend the hotel staff learn the history of the palace. Outside on an inner column there is a beautiful blond lady on a ceramic picture about 15 feet up behind two small iron gates. First, no one at the hotel knew about it. Second, they gave me a BS answer it was the "Virgin Mary". That woman was from the 1900's and must have lived there is my guess. The 2nd is none knew what the gargoyle was on the arch going into the Jewish Quarter. They actually did not care and had never seen it.
Excellent location, easy to walk everywhere, splendid breakfast! Complimentary coffee and tea available. Staff at the desk not so attentive. Spacious room and bath. Of note, the charming university area with the square nearby are not recommended to stroll at night due to drug users there - tip from a local.
We were very pleased with our stay here. The hotel is very convenient for the historic centre, well placed for Piazza Maggiore and lots of restaurants. Our room was on a side away from the front square which other people found noisy in the evenings, so we weren't troubled by this. The room was large with a spacious bathroom with shower and bidet. WiFi excellent. The best feature was the staff, who were all extremely friendly and very helpful, suggesting good local restaurants and booking them for us. Would stay here again.
Very good hotel in the historic centre of Bologna. Great view from the terraces facing the Two Towers. Very helpful and friendly staff, surprisingly good choice of breakfast :-) The little square in front of the hotel is permanently noisy (late evening crowd, then cleaning machines at 4am in the morning).
I was there for three days and had a nice stay. The room was nice - nothing exceptional but everything expected was there. There was a problem with the bathroom on the second day but I was quickly given a new room without any hassle. There can be some evening noise from people in the square outside but there were earplugs provided in the room. In the end I didn't feel the need to use them and I expect many people will have the same experience. The staff were friendly and nice and helped me print a travel document and advised me on local transport. In short, everything was nice as expected and the staff was helpful and friendly.
Nice location in the vibrant city, close to the towers and square. Good parking on premises, friendly staff. The stay itself was horrible, stayed at a luxury room, very bad lights in bathroom, very loud, badly insulated, the whole night students who are making fun, seem to be standing in the room, at 07:00 they come to collect the glass, which is making a hell of noise, at 07:30 they start up the coffee machine on the second floor, again very noisy. Hardly slept, in a bed that is feeling like a rock... very hard.
Wonderful situation. Great staff. Good breakfast. Comfy bed. Good rooms except very thin walls which meant we could hear our neighbours quite clearly (very passionate!!) and the live music I assume from the bar below went on until 3.00am one night. The very quiet hotel bar was excellent and again staff superb. Apart from the soundproofing, we only had two minor gripes; One, we struggled with the air-con in our room and two we would have really liked proper cups in our room rather than the flimsy plastic ones. It is a great hotel and I hope we will be back. It is ideally placed for the city and on our visit the opera.
The hotel is very centrally located and s great base for visiting the historic part of the city. The rooms are comfortable, although decor is a little dated. Breakfast buffet is simple but sufficient. Bed was very comfortable and the roof top terrace is great to sit and enjoy the sunset.
Going to Bologna professionally. Phantastic palce to stay, shop, have diner, chese, ham etc Many excellent restautrants. People always wanting to sit outside. Even when O C. Heated terrasses. Beautiful builidngs at the plaza majore,.. Many beautiful churches, musea, university quarter. portas, trolley buses. In the weekend the major shopping and touristic interesting area traffic free. Many interestingbtower "due tori" in the middle
I spent an unplanned night here when my luggage didn't arrive at the airport. The location is excellent and the staff were friendly -- they provided me with a toothbrush and basic toiletries. My room was clean, but very dated. Nevertheless, I slept like a log. There's also a roof terrace with a bar that looks quite nice.
Towels were so dirty and had hair all over them. We asked to have them replaced, and they seemed annoyed. Our mini bar drinks were drank from and opened, and when we asked to have them replaced they didn't, but instead when we were checking out wanted to charge us . Wasn't impressed at all with the hotel or cleanliness , but the location is good.
We stayed for 2 nights. Rooms were very clean and comfortable. the location is very very convenient. You can go anywhere by foot. Staff has been very helpful and their restaurant, bar, and entertainment suggestions were excellent.
Unfortunately I only spent one night there - but to stay in the absolute center of historic Bologna - close til the churches, museums etc was a very nice experience and I can fully recommend this hotel with a kind and helpfull staff
Great location for exploring Bologna on foot. It was an easy walk from the train station (we have backpacks, no roller bags). Our room had a terrace with a nice view but no chairs on it. The hotel is clean and comfortable but it does have a corporate feel, with little personality. The location, near the towers, is good. Bologna was crazy crowded considering we were there in November, but it was a weekend. The main streets are made pedestrian on weekends, and the area around the church and square has bands playing and tons of people. We enjoyed it all, but it was nice to return to our quiet room. The hotel also has several nice public areas, outdoor terraces and indoor sitting rooms, as well as the breakfast room.
My cousin and I each had single rooms for 4 nights. The hotel is well situated and offers good facilities. The staff were brilliant.. I particularly want to mention Stefano (a porter who helped us resolve our problems with electrical adaptors) and Daria and Felix on reception. Nothing was too much trouble for them to help us. All the staff at Donato are a credit to the Best Western brand.
I booked 2 friends into this hotel for a family wedding. The hotel is in the ideal position for a visit to this wonderful city. They both enjoyed their stay immensely. In particular I would like to mention the friendliness of the staff particularly the reception staff. Eleonora and her colleague were an absolute credit. Hopefully this message will be passed on to the two young ladies.
...unless Italian 3 stars are all at a standard of their own - however staff is exceptionally attentive - breakfast is poor and there isn't a restaurant - but there hundreds of places to grab a bite to eat literally one every 10 steps If you want to be in the heart of the city then This is place to stay - I've given three stars based on staff attentiveness politeness and friendliness - hotel it self is “dated” in one word - see pictures of views from the window and balcony
I hate to give bad reviews so let me start off with the good. The hotel's location is impeccable. It is right in the center of Bologna (next to the Due Torri and University of Bologna), with easy access to the other main attractions. The staffs were very polite and spoke flawless English. However, the property itself is extremely outdated and needs a lot of work. I stayed in a single room on the 3rd floor for 4 nights. On my 1st night, the A/C did not work and I was woken up by the stuffiness at 2am. Called the front desk and switched to another room. It was a bit better, but had a strange smell and subtle ticking sound so I could not fall asleep. Next morning I found out the sound was from the fridge, I unplugged it. And the smell was from the bathroom toilet, I opened the patio door for air circulation. However I had to close the patio door when I went out, and therefore when i returned, I would step into the strange, faulty smell again. I did not bother switching room again as I felt they would all be the same. Also as many have brought up, the walls are paper thin. I could hear street noises from the 3rd floor, and conversations of the next room vaguely. Therefore I felt compelled to keep my TV at a very low volume, and walk lightly in my own room. Outside of the room, the hallway carpets and hotel bar were unappealing as well. I have stayed at a wide range of properties in different cities, from luxurious 5- star hotels to airbnb's to hostels with shared rooms. This is certainly one of my worse experiences. For sure I would not expect too much from this hotel and with what I paid, but at the same time I cannot understand why this property would have 4 stars. This is unlike any Best Western in the US. And it is such a pity that with such a prime location, this is where it got to.
Recently returned from a mini break in Bologna staying at the Hotel San Donato and we would without doubt return. The hotel staff we found were always courteous and very obliging. A shout out to the young lady tending the bar who introduced me to ‘Aperol Spritz' as she was so pleasant. The hotel was a perfect choice for us and could not have been better located right at the centre. If you like to walk then this hotel is central to the labyrinth of bars and restaurants. We had a lovely double balcony we were however slightly disappointed that it lacked a small cafe set so that we could have sat outside. There was a nice rooftop terrace which was a great place to take in the city views and enjoy an ‘Apperativo'. We will return to Bologna and we will stay at the San Donato.
30 seconds walk away from the Due Torre, loads of bars and restaurants close by. A nice hotel, room very clean, air con very powerful (controlled from within the room.). We got a taxi from the airport, it was 20 euros (middle of the day, light traffic, could be more expensive at other times of day). Breakfast ok, but plenty of other places to get breakfast close by. Would definitely stay here again.
The hotel is in the Old Town centre at walking distance from most restaurants and things to do in Bologna. Very friendly staff. Fine breakfast every morning on rooftop-terras, and ooh the coffee in Italy, love it. visitors TIP - don't go for the readymade coffee at the breakfast wait until staff asks you what coffee you want and you'll be surprised with the excellent barrista products they come up with. Airco took us some time to figure out, then worked as it should in the heat of the summer. And we absolutely loved our room with balcony and the view
We only had 15 hours in Bologna -arriving at midnight and then leaving the next afternoon to continue on to Lucca. We picked this hotel for two reasons: 1) It was right in the center of the old city (so we could maximize what little time we had there) 2) They also had family style rooms --meaning a suite that featured two bedrooms and a sitting area that could also sleep another family member. As a family of 4 with teenagers, this was ideal --and a very price reasonable given the size of our room(s) and location. The Taxi ride from the airport was 15 minutes - we did Friday night around 11:30pm and the center of Bologna was packed and lively with students, residents and tourists up until 2am . Right outside of the hotel is a cafe that is also an outdoor bar at night. As soon as we checked in, we came back outside and enjoyed a drink and snack and took in the environment. For being in the center of everything the hotel has very quiet rooms -the windows newer and double pained and we couldn't really hear anything outside --unless we opened a window. The provided breakfast was more than adequate and was on their lovely rooftop terrace. We were able to explore the downtown area and shops, with many spots to have a great lunch to choose from within a 5 block radius. We needed to be back on the road by 1pm and the hotel arranged a car to take us to our rental car company and everything went very smooth.
Had a bit of trouble of finding the entrance to the hotel as it is on the small piazza not the street. The lobby is slightly disappointing as their lounges and the decor seems to be dated. However, these are just initial negative impressions that quickly are outweighed by all the positive ones. Very friendly and helpful staff. My single room was specious. Soft and clean sheets, comfortable bed. Bathroom in spite of having old fashioned decor was super clean! The cleanest I've ever seen anywhere in fact. Everything seemed to be new or refreshed at least. I could not spot any dust or dark spot anywhere! The room also has a nice small terrace. Unfortunately no any outdoor furniture that would be just perfect. I really enjoyed my afternoon drink on the rooftop terrace. If you wish to enjoy breakfast there also - suggest to go there early as after 8am in summer all tables were taken. Breakfast was good. Usual Italian affair. Wifi and aircon worked fine. Location is perfect to all main attractions, bars and restaurants.
On arriving to the hotel (don't follow the satnav, but use their guidance that they email to you before hand), we were greated by friendly faces and checked in straight away. The room was comfortable and had a lovely view over the city. The bathroom was very sizeable, my only complaint would be that the shower is not standing and so you have to sit to take a shower. This takes twice as long and is very uncomfortable and awkward. My advise to the hotel would be to extend the hose and put up a curtain. The view from the rooftop was incredible and the location is right in the heart of Bologna, plenty of bars and restaurants and 5mins walk to the towers.
We stayed for two nights while exploring Bologna, and San Donato was the perfect place to use as a base. The staff are helpful, friendly, and helped us make reservations at the restaurants we wanted to visit a few weeks before we came. The bed was very comfortable, and the blinds black out 100% of the light should you choose. There is a lovely terrace looking out over the terracotta rooftops of the city, right at the famous two towers which are a stone's throw from the hotel. This isn't a luxury hotel, and the decor is perhaps a little dated, but everything functions perfectly, and it's by far the best located hotel in the city. Would definitely recommend.
This hotel is amazing! Balcony overlooking main square with shops and busy restaurants. Still manages to remain quiet in clean, spacious room with comfy bed. Good breakfast and lovely staff. Highly recommended
This is a gem of a hotel. It is reasonably priced and perfectly located in downtown Bologna. The staff is helpful and warm, and they give good recommendations of restaurants, etc.. The breakfast is generous and inexpensive (definitely try the Muesli and cappuccino). The breakfast room has a patio and you can eat outside among the rooftops and towers. It is beautiful. My single room (#355) was functional and roomy enough, and it had a balcony that had a picturesque view of the rooftops.
Having stayed in the lovely Best Western Milano in Modena, we had high expectations of our stay here. We were not disappointed although this hotel is entirely different in every way. Firstly it's much older and perhaps in need of a little modernizing although charming in many ways. The room was a good size although the bathroom was smaller and the shower was very compact indeed. The hairdryer was quite ineffective and the location of mirrors and power points made the use of any other electrical hair styling tools impossible to use (all mirrors are in the bathroom)!. Otherwise everything was good and the staff again were very friendly and helpful. The location of this hotel couldn't be better, just a short stroll away from the iconic two towers and the main shopping area.
Well positioned hotel with easy access to all there is to see in Bologna. Good breakfast and much appreciated complimentary tea/coffee throughout the day. Roof terrace a great sun trap and ideal for cocktails! Staff on reception very helpful and waiting staff very friendly. Would return without hesitation.
Location, location, location, lovely hotel with excellent staff, not quite a four star, rooms clean and tidy, breakfast was good, ate outside on the veranda every morning with stunning views of Bologna, would stay again & thanks to all the staff ??
Very good quality / price balance. Hotel has a safety parking place in the court. The is roomclean and the bathroom also. Kind staff . Breakfast is good , but a bit "poor"/ same offer every day = not really lot of choices.vs. our expections or habit in **** hotels in Italy.
This hotel is advertised as a four-star hotel, although a three star category may be more suitable. With this in mind, however, it is an excellent choice for the center of Bologna. In fact, its fantastic location at the heart of the old city cannot be surpassed. Add to it the attractive veranda by the 2nd floor as well as the magnificent view from the roof, and you have a winning combination. Also worthy of mention is the breakfast buffet, which may be enjoyed on the veranda mentioned above. On the down side, my room shower may very well have been the smallest I have ever tried to fit into (but I am sure the hotel has more spacious options to offer). And, for three mornings running, the promised wake-up call failed to materialize, and I could not escape the feeling that nobody cared enough about the problem to fix it. Maybe this is also the place to mention that the room amenities included a set of ear plugs... while very considerate, this is possibly not a very good sign, but I slept very well without them, even though I kept the window open. The overall experience was, nevertheless, very positive, and I will be happy to return.
Have stayed here as a couple before. But, this time stayed in the junior suite on our way to Venice. Great location and a fantastic suite for three people. Excellent hotel with very good breakfast even though we had no time this time due to the early train we had it during our last stay!
We are wrapping up a 15 night Rome to Bologna trip, staying in 10 different hotels! It has been a fabulous trip. We were in Bologna 4 years ago and loved it. At that time we noticed this hotel and thought we would love to stay here. So happy we are here for tonight but sure wish we could stay longer! We booked an “economy twin” AAA rate of 138.50eu and I was expecting a tiny room. But no! It is huge (room #206) - and the bathroom as well. It is spotless, the wifi is fast, the terraces are lovely, the staff is friendly, and the location is the best! We had picked up a rental car in Rome and dropped it at the Hertz office near the train station. Since we have been to Bologna before we walked to the hotel. About 30 minutes with our rather heavy luggage. A bit challenging but doable. Very very happy with this hotel and would love to return here.
One of the best hotels I have stayed at - great location, comfortable room, and very nice and attentive staff. The breakfast terrace overlooking the city rooftops is a particular plus. Highly recommended
Very central, nice staff, clean and comfortable. Not a lot to criticise here. Good choice at breakfast, very friendly staff. Reasonable room size. Would have like real fruit juice instead of fake. The building itself was old, so not completely characterless.
This is the perfect base from which to explore the city as everywhere is in walking distance - and there's plenty of walking to be done. From our room and the charming rooftop terrace bar there is a good close view of the two towers. There are plenty of good restaurants very close by and many of these are frequented by local residents so there is not much fear of walking into a tourist trap. The rooms are very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The hotel serves a breakfast buffet which is quite varied and very reasonably priced. We found the staff very helpful and friendly as were just about every one of the Bolognese we met during this trip
Stayed three nights at San Donato, my third visit. The hotel is a few minutes from central Bologna with many restaurants etc all within an easy ten minute walk. Although the street outside is busy, it doesn't intrude on the Hotel which is very quiet. Reception was friendly, efficient and helpful. There were four in our group, all wanting a single room and this Hotel, unlike many others, does have proper single rooms. They are not large but plenty big enough so you don't feel you are sleeping in a cupboard. Bed was comfortable, there's plenty of storage space, mini-bar and on request, a hospitality tray. Bathroom is ok, although a more powerful shower would have been welcome. My room (and those of my colleagues) all had a balcony. Breakfast is the usual Continental buffet (but hot egg, bacon), all fresh and kept topped up by very attentive staff. There's no restaurant at the Hotel but they are happy to recommend and make bookings for local restaurants.
Nice ?talian hotel with a fantastic location. Rooms are old but bathroom was very clean. There is a small parking next to the building. ?phones gps cannot find the way to hotel with car. Call them to have a description of the tiny road where you can reach the hotel.
The hotel is located very closely to the main towers, with almost any shop service in the nearby. The hotel furniture is very old-fashioned, with unpleasant smell in the corridors probably due to the moquette. Our economy room was of adequate size, with a window in bedroom and another one in the bathroom (very large compared to other hotels of similar category). Hand towels were too thin, and shower head was not detachable, that makes it quite uncomfortable. AC sockets are not well distributed inside the room. Breakfast food is ok, but coffee quality should definitely be improved. Housekeepers are very polite, while courtesy of receptionists is in the average.
Situated in the middle of the action, metres away from the towers, this is a decent place to stay. Rooms are basic and in need of updating but very clean. The walls are paper-thin so it can be quite noisy and housekeeping need reminding if this. No restaurant as such but breakfast is available. Complimentary teas and coffees can be made in the lounge/bar area on the 2nd floor. Showers really do need anti slip mats ?? Lots of busy bars close at hand - this is student territory so it can be hard to find somewhere for a quiet drink. Small supermarket just across from the hotel so really no need to use the overpriced (as ever!) minibars. Ask for a room with a balcony.
This hotel is located right behind the square with the two main towers, so from here it's easy to access all the centre of the city. The hotel is very basic and the rooms are big some things could be renovated or improved, like the heating that is too high in the corridor and sometimes also in the rooms. The bed size and comfort were good, the bathroom were big and renovated, the view over the city is wonderful (mainly from the top roof terrace), the place is rather quiet so you can sleep well. The personnel of the reception is very nice and attentive to your needs, while the cleaning women are pretty noisy and a bit fast. The price was not that high for a Best Western hotel.
Even though there are some really tiny rooms, this is a great place to stay. A short walk from the central square and right in the middle of the action. The reception staff are exceptionally helpful and go out of their way to help. When they book you a taxi, it always arrives on time.
We picked this hotel based on its central location. It is a nice hotel, and there are pleasant walks in the neighborhood, but be aware that the street system in this part of Bologna is somewhat chaotic, so it's hard to self-navigate. Be prepared to use taxis to get around. The hotel has nice amenities and décor. There are many restaurants nearby, but while we were there, many were overrun by students, and were very noisy.
Great location, we took the Aerobus from the airport. When you come out the door look right, you will see a ticket machine at the bus stop, €6 per adult, take it 3 stops, we read the hotel was a 10 min walk from the stop, well it's a 20 min walk. The hotel it's self is really nice. The staff are very helpfully. You leave your room key at reception, but on return they give you your key without asking for I'D. Nice breakfast, & a nice outdoor terrice. SHOWER is a bit small. Rooms are spotless, well done housekeeping. Will stay here again.
This hotel is located in the heart of the city and vibrates with the bustle of Bologna. Earplugs are supplied with the toiletries and are needed for rooms facing the square outside. However, the service and facilities are excellent. There is a superb breakfast buffet and the staff were very helpful. Definitely will return.
We started out very frustrated trying to find this place by auto. We had GPS that directed us to the general vicinity in Bologna, but after that we were going around in circles: getting to streets that were blocked, or going the wrong way (many one way streets) or even onto a street that became pedestrian only (without signage to that effect) and then egress blocked by cement poles-all this required a very delicate backing out to avoid obstacles and uncooperative, unsympathetic, and much amused locals. Finally we managed to illegally park in a lot which turned out to be only a 5 minute walk from the hotel, once I realized where we were. Upon entering the hotel we were told to drive right over because they had a lot (24 Euros a day). The clerk (and all the staff were courteous and helpful) told me that GPS doesn't give reliable directions in the area of the old center city. She took out a map and showed me the best way to exit this old center city by car, and where then to start using the GPS, and upon our return, what destination to enter in the GPS and then upon reaching that place, she drew a reliable route to reach the hotel. It would have been helpful had the hotel sent a standard email to every person who made a reservation spelling all this out. Once they drafted the whole instruction it wouldn't have taken a lot of effort to send it electronically to every potential guest. A lot of wasted time and aggravation would have been avoided! And the inner city streets have no vehicular traffic on Saturdays-we happened to be on a Saturday tour and our driver was able to pick us up early in the morning, but had to drop us off blocks from the hotel in the afternoon. This could be a real problem for someone checking in on a Saturday! The hotel was in an old building right within the bustling area of the old center of the city. Staff was nice. Rooms were kind of motel-adequate. Shower was OK. We had a balcony with a view. There was an extra charge for breakfast. We did not utilize the breakfast for scheduling reasons. Room cost was reasonable.
We chose the Best Western Hotel San Donato because of it's central location, which was brilliant for our overnight stay in Bologna. We chose location over "character." The room was large and clean, and the bed was very comfortable. Our room overlooked the secured parking area, so was lovely and quiet. The roof terrace is a great place to have a drink and unwind, taking in the sights and sounds of this special city. If you are looking for a centrally located hotel that is reasonably priced, this is the hotel for you.
Housed within a traditional city-centre building, this hotel really scores on location, as it is easy to reach many of the city's principal attractions, as well as restaurants and shopping areas. The surrounding streets can be busy and noisy, but the atmosphere really adds to the experience of staying here. The hotel serves an excellent buffet breakfast (which can be enjoyed on the terrace in fine weather); the staff were consistently friendly and helpful; and the hotel's roof terrace offers outstanding views of Bologna. A good choice - one we would definitely recommend.
Having had the please of Lufthansa cancelling my flight at 2 hours notice and not offering me any accommodation for the night I found this hotel out of desperation more than choice. A Best Western is what I call "a safe bet" in most cities and I was able to book a room on-line. Could not be more convenient to the old town. Reception was very helpful on arrival and early morning departure. Room was small and average but clean with wooden floor. Not sure why but noise from the outside coridoor and other rooms seemed particularly loud. There is a small bar/lounge area on the 2nd floor with outside terrace and Lambardo who provides the service is a true professional that represents this establishment exquisitely. Drop in here for a coffee/drink and he will provide a great "concierge" service. I will definitely return to this lovely city and this hotel will be on my short list to consider.
Nice hotel but sadly no character. Good very clean comfy rooms but very compact bathroom and shower only. Sorry but in a 4 star I expect a bath. Our room at the front was very noisy from the students in the bars around the square. One night the loud noise including singing went on past 3 am. This to me was what let the hotel down. Otherwise very good central location. Decent but buffet breakfast. Ok bar and nice roof terrace. I would go back if I could have a quiet room at the back.
the hotel is in a beautiful area near the towers and the university, shopping area near there, ice cream shops, bars and many other amenities. the breakfast is very generous and the people in the breakfast room very kind and helpful
Located in middle of old city with own parking on site is brilliant except it has a very odd way of controlling access with validated token that front desk looked pretty scornfull when we did not know how or where to validate (do it at front destroy and avoid scorn). Facities average but near to everything. City centre a very, noisy, busy place, quite wearing after a while. Hotel has a roof terrace with great sunset view over city roofs. We specifically booked twin beds, not allocated and after a lot of runaround it was clear they did not have any. Manager gave evening drinks on terrace instead. Staff at breakfast are brilliant, happy smiling helpful with good food.
Breakfast is average to say the least and the quality of towels and other room / hotel amenities is not up to standard. The hotel has a lovely roof terrace and you can enjoy drinks at that location but third floor rooms suffer from furniture moved around on the terrace. The hotel needs some modernistion to make it 4 stars and to enhance guests experience. Stayed one night on Fri 10th and two nights on Tue 15th & Wed 16th Aug 2017.
It was a blessing in disguise that Albergo Hotel Centrale at Bologna messed up our booking and we ended up staying at Best Western Hotel San Donato in the heart of Bologna. We were treated like a VIP guests at this boutique hotel because the other hotel didn't want our business. Our check-in was easy-breezy and hassle-free. The staff were very helpful with our questions about providing directions to all the sightseeing locations and great restaurants. Our room was nice with a view and the breakfast was even better because it was outside on the balcony overlooking fabulous Bologna. One of the staff also showed us how to enjoy the city view by going to the roof top for some photo op and selfies! If we travel back to Bologna, we would surely stay here again.
It's the second time and even better. Location is fantastic. The building is old and impressive Rooms are nice and air conditiond (realy works). Breakfast on the balcony. Parking on site (very important). Did I say location??
We had a wonderful stay at this hotel, right in the heart of the city, only steps away from the two towers. The staff were amazing in every way, we felt pampered and important. Our family room was spacious and well proportioned, although the entrance To the bathroom wad a bit tight and the extra sofa was a bit uncomfortable. Breakfast was substantial, and there is a free coffee and tea service in the lobby all through the day. All things considered, highly recommended!!!
Would you believe! As soon as we sat down at the Terrazza surrounded by beautiful red geraniums, we realized we had already been five years ago! Unknown to us, we chose this Hotel for its location. Indeed, it is a stone throw away from the city centre and right in the middle of the mini square there is now a lovely cafeteria which serves drinks and typically Italian specialities. In the past, rubbish bins were stored there! As for the Hotel itself. . . it needs updating. . .where has health and safety gone? I asked for an iron and I was presented with one which had the red and blue wires showing! Telephoned reception before reaching the Hotel and we were promised a kettle with all the trimmings in the room. On request, we were given an old fashioned kettle with two small plastic cups which seemed as if they had been taken off an aircraft in the days of plastic cutlery on board. It is such a shame that we also had to remind them that we prefer a hot shower rather than a cold one! Would love to go back but surely at less than 300euros a night!
Tucked away in the Old Jewish Quarter of Bologna, Italy is the San Donato hotel. I had only one night this time, but I hope it's not the last time I stay there. The staff was friendly, my room was great, but it's the location that's fantastic! Breakfast outside on the balcony overlooking beautiful Bologna was fabulous. I'll definitely check to see if a room is available the next time I go back...
I am very glad to choose this hotel. We have a stroller and the hotel is easily accessible. The room was nice with a terrific view. Breakfast was 5 euros/person but it really worths with the variety and taste, simply marvelous. Location was great. It was a pleasure to sit at the terrace and have a cup of cappuccino while enjoying the view of two towers. The only thing I didn't like was that the hotel was too obsessed with recycling. I like environment friendly hotels but it was too much with the recycled toilet roll (I've seen better recycled ones) and insufficiency of towels.
fabulous place in the right position. The hotel decor fits in with the surrounding buildings. The rooftop terrace is great and the staff will serve you up there if you wish, although i took my drinks up there myself. The hotel is clean, the staff are friendly and the breakfast is a typical continental breakfast. If i was to find fault with this hotel, it would be the wifi, which was hit and miss in different areas of the hotel, but otherwise, it would use this hotel again.
Great location in middle of the old city Nice and very helpful staff Clean room and bathroom Nice terrace Air conditioning was not working this time of the year ! Daytime was warm Very small room and television
A stone's throw from the towers and a few blocks from the Piazza Maggiore, a comfortable hotel with nice room, terraces with views ( and complimentary coffee ), and a roof terrace with great views of the city and the towers, this was a good choice.
We were pleased to find out that the hotel could give our plates to the police so that we would not be ticketed for driving in the historic city center. Parking was EUR24 per night, but well worth it since we had two kids, suitcases and a rental car. The room was clean and renovated, the rooftop decks were amazing and the hotel is literally steps to many historical sites. The only downside was the wifi was not very strong in our room. Otherwise, it was great value for money.
If you visit bologna so stay in San donato. It's located in the city center, they offer parking space ( which is not typical in bologna) and they offer a very good breakfast. They also have a roof terrace so you can have a wonderful view.
Well, the noise made by rowdy students is intrusive, but in fairness there's nothing the hotel can do about this - it's the price you pay for te location in a university city. We were delighted to be allocated room 202 at the front of the hotel near to bar and roof terrace. Stayed three nights over a very busy public holiday and my-oh-my can those students be noisy! The room was double glazed but they still woke us and hotel management told us they parade every weekend! I've read the reviews that say the hotel and rooms are"tired" but that does most emphatically NOT include room 202. We paid 460 euros for three nights which for such a central hotel is excellent value. No hesitation in recommending this hotel unless the noise is an issue in which case try the Grand Hotel Majestic on Independence Street where rack rate is 600 euro per night!
Very central but so noisy, no sleep at weekends when students drinking nearby till early morning. We paid for superior room which faced onto road, friends had smaller much cheaper room but no noise ! Good buffet breakfast 5 euros. Went for 2 birthday celebrations but nothing special done for us.
Clean comfortable quiet room. Take the stairs, well worth it for the paintings. Shower didn't drain so you had to keep turning off the water supply until it drained. Everything around the hotel appeared very 'tired'. They appeared to be focusing on repairing the cornices in reception, very odd considering the rest of the decor.
I spent one night at the hotel with my toddler recently. Easy 20 minute cab ride from the airport. Room was small and very basic. But it included a very good AC, full-sized cupboard, desk, small TV, radio on the bed (built into the headboard, which could be a good or bad thing, depending!), kettle, and minibar. The room and bathroom were very clean. I asked for a double bed thinking it would be safer than having my toddler on a single bed on his own, and I paid an extra 100 Euro for it (for one night). When we got there, it was two single beds pushed together, which was not comfy at all. And I could have pushed two single beds together and saved the money! Hotel staff was polite enough but not really helpful. Given that the hotel is located in a wonderful spot, close to tourist attractions and public transport, they could not answer basic questions about attraction timings, etc. The city maps that the hotel has are not very clear or easy to understand either. Overall, I would go back just for the location but wouldn't spend more than a couple nights there.
Hotel has an amazing location near the two towers. The room was large and very clean for 2 adults and 2 teenage daughters. This family room had 2 good size rooms and a separate sitting area so very comfortable. Based other reviews it seems room size can vary but this room was excellent. The breakfast was great value at 5 Euro per head. Hotel had a stunning rooftop where you could sit out and a few shared balconies where you could take breakfast too. Overall a great hotel and would stay again.
Very small room. Clean but very dated, needing redecoration. Tiny shower - and I'm pretty skinny. Nice size private balcony but not a great view, and a chair would have been nice. Great location. Probably a large variation in room quality given photos on the website - mine was nothing like the pictures. Some must be 4 star, but mine definitely not.
Good hotel in nice (but noisy) piazza, 100m from the Two Towers. It has a nice roof top terrace bar with great views of towers (G&T €10 Peroni €5). Staff helpful and friendly. Good reasonably priced (€5) buffet breakfast which can be had on terrace. Plently of good restaurants, cafes and bars in close proximity. I would happily recommend this hotel to friends as long as they weren't sensitive to noise.
Stayed here with teenage sons in 2 rooms. There was a room between us and the walls were so thin we heard everything our 'neighbours' did. From cleaning their teeth, to going to the toilet to having sex. It was a bit embarrassing. We could also hear a baby crying a few rooms down and all told, just no sound proofing . The shower was really poor quality ( electric) and the decor was so dated - it was straight out of the 1980's. I know starcatings in Italy work differently to the uk or the USA but I think the hotel was really over-priced. It needs an overhaul, starting with decent sound proofing
Stayed for 2 nights on a short City Break. Location in the heart of Bologna can not be bettered. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was clean and had all the facilities we required. Breakfast was really good and being able to eat out on the roof terrace is an added bonus. We will certainly use Hotel San Donato again if/when we visit Bologna in the future.
very quick & efficient reception, poor sound insulation in bedrooms, you can hear your neighbours without too much difficulty the selling point is location, perfect. there is also a nice upstairs terrazza where you can enjoy tea & coffee.
The desk guy was very helpful and excellent troughout our stay! All the staff was friendly and welcoming. The location in incredible. The hotel itself is somewhat aged and has the old carpet with the accompanying smell and effect on the breath although it was still okay. Room was clean but a bit of a drain smell. Very nice seating erea's on the roof and some large balkonies where you can sit in the sun with a view. Overall price-quality good but not super.
Good central location, right next to the Two Towers. Don't miss a beautiful panoramic view of the city from the roof terrace. We got a small, well-refurbished room with a little balcony facing a quiet inner courtyard. Really friendly staff – whoever is in charge of hiring at this hotel sure does an outstanding job picking the right people. They are all very nice. Delicious, top quality breakfast buffet.
This hotel has a very good location, within the heart of Bologna, but it is very much in need of a thorough retrofitting. Good breakfast, well attended by attentive staff. The amenities and the quality are not consistent with a 4 stars hotel. Not good value for money.
The hotel is perfectly located in the small streets of the city center and the building is full of history and charm with a roof top viewing the city. The hotel however is really aging, the reception very standard and thry keep your ID, the standard room is very small with a single bed and the smell is really bad, the AC is also very old and you can smell sometime humidity and sometime cooking, small nice balcony. The breaksfast is of another age with nice personal but so low quality food, at best it is a 2 star hotel ans there are much better 2 stars.
This hotel is perfectly situated for all of the sights of Bologna and you are literally moments away from the main square and surrounding attractions. Whilst the hotel itself is perfectly acceptable and good for budget travellers like myself, it is in need of some refurbishment and updating of the decor. Also, I noticed that the walls were very thin and was very thankful that I was next door to someone fairly quiet otherwise I'd have got no sleep. The bed and bedding weren't particularly comfortable and again, could probably use some upgrading. That said though, for a few nights this is not a great issue, but still noticeable nevertheless. To ensure a better night's sleep, ensure you're given a room at the back of the hotel so as to avoid the noise from the bar at the front. This is certainly no luxury hotel for sure, but is fine for a short stay.
A perfect location! Walking to many of the sites is easy. Friendly front desk this hotel offers large rooms and bathroom with desk and other conveniences. The 5 Euro per person breakfast contains both hot and cold, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and other beverages. The second floor has a nice bar and a balcony over looking the busy square below. This is location, location.
The location of the property is hard to beat, however the room smelled of something unpleasant. It's a very basic room, old mattresses, hard pillows, small shower. Very good breakfast and staff is very nice and helpful. I guess it's hard to build a hotel in this town cause most chains do not have one. Except for the great location I'd keep looking.
Good value. Clean room and the bathroom is spotless with a bidet, and towel warmer. In room safe. Mini fridge. Bar on second floor for apéritive is fine, you won't get full here. Mostly snacks. The Internet was a little tricky (Samsung Galaxy 6 and IPad mini) but the front desk was helpful. I'd stay here again.
very good hotel, dead central bologna. not super high end, but in a great location. check out the 3rd and 4th floor views. probably some of the best in the city. however the streets nearby are difficult, id recommend not driving anything larger than a small euro car to the hotel
We stayed 1 weekend in Bologna and San Donato is a very good hotel to explore Bologna. The hotel is located in the enter and close to the 2 famous towers. It's not new our room a few on the famous towers. The ladies at the front desk were helpful and the breakfast was good. The next time in Bologna we would stay here again.
Hotel is little bit outdated but everything works. Location is in the middle of old town so you can walk everythere. Wi-fi is excelent. Rooms are medium size and clean. There is nice view from roof terrace over the town. No bar at the roof terrace. Safe and expensive park at hotel. Breakfast is medium.
The hotel is very central and located right at a nice piazza with a cafe. My room was of good size and comfortable, however the room and the common areas I visited does not seem to have been renovated for 20-30 years. Breakfast was ok, however, croissants were not fresh and the "orange juice" was just sweet sugary drink (however this seems to be the norm in Italian hotels after my experience). The room was quite expensive and I think its possible to get nicer rooms for less other places.
It took me 40 minutes to find it, but that was lack of map and Italian. In fact it's just a 20 minute walk from the train station. The hotel is located just next to The towers in the centre. Lots of eateries, bars, bus stops etc on your doorstep. A must do is the 489 steps up the tower. Views are amazing. Makes sure you go up to the 4th floor for amazing roof top views. The 2nd floor has free coffee available after 10.30am. I had the whole place to myself for the 3 days I stayed, The reception staff are really helpful, don't rely on there being buses at the weekend for still runs etc. The centre becomes pedestrianised but like I mentioned earlier, it's only 20 minutes to the station. I will happily be booking the San donato on my next visit to Bologna
Not one to often write reviews but after staying here I felt it was a must, particularly after reading some of the previous reviews. We booked to stay in a twin economy room, and couldn't have been more pleased when we entered the room. It was a great size, with loads of storage space (both hanging and drawers), a fridge, a safe, air conditioning and a huge bathroom. Everywhere was absolutely spotless, particularly the bathroom. The hotel also had beautiful terraces where you could sit and look over the city with a drink or breakfast. The location of the hotel was ideal, the 2 towers are literally at the bottom of the street and then it's only minutes to the centre of town from there. Overall I would recommend this hotel to anybody who wants a no frills yet perfectly good hotel in a great location with helpful staff.
Great location... Rooms are outdated and smell like a sewer. Showers are tiny, nasty carpet on floors and walls! Friendly staff however; especially the cleaning lady!! You will probably need a chiropractor after sleeping on their beds....
The hotel is located right in the old centre, accesible by car and easy to find. The building is charming and old, rooms are a bit outdated but still clean and comfortable. My room also had a small terace but it was way too hot to enjoy it. The best part of the hotel is the open terace where you can have breakfast while enjoying great views. All in all good hotel, nothing fancy but worth a visit.
Not the best rooms, but model pricing and very central for the city centre. Air conditioning not working on arrival, rather dated but functional rooms, public areas are okay. Plenty close enough to walk to within 15 minutes strolling time.
We had booked to stay 4 nights, but ended up checking out one night early. The hotel has a café/cocktail bar right outside the front door. It is very noisy late at night with people yelling, then when all the customers are gone the pack up begins. Tables and chairs scraping along the cobblestones until all hours of the morning. But then between 6 and 6.30 am the unpacking begins! Such a bad situation for the hotel. The room was lovely, but faced the sun in the afternoon and it was stinking hot and it was towards the end of April. When asked if we could have the air conditioning turned on, the receptionist said it will not be turned on until the 1st of May. What a joke! Air conditioning in Australia is running all year round. We could not bear the heat and the noise so we checked out. Luckily there was no penalty! No complaints about the food, or service and staff were very friendly. Roof top terrace has lovely views. Nice spot for an evening drink. Outside the historic sights, town was shabby, dirty, and had graffiti on walls. Very disappointing.
Fully recommended. We returned for one night this year to kick off our Italian Odyssey (we finished with two nights last year). Hotel is friendly- rooms are comfortable. Breakfat on the roof-top terrace (overlooking the two towers) is fabulous- particular mantion to the buffalo mozzarella- a bargain for an additional 5 euros.
A beautiful and perfect location, very easy to find. Good basic rooms with aircon and breakfast on the pretty outdoor terrace with a view over the city. Really lovely staff, very helpful and stunning rooftop terrace with sun beds. We would definitely visit again.
Stayed for 2 weeks in May. Single room at back overlooking courtyard car park. Quiet. Good size for single room with lovely bright bathroom and balcony. Could not have better location for central Bologna. Roof terrace and 2 small terraces. Great views especially the 2 towers. Faded decor etc but adequate breakfast and helpful, tolerant staff- changed my room for me day after arrival, locked myself out twice, not a problem.
Great stuff and ready to help always !!! Car parking - perfect ! Good breakfast! Convenient rooms ! View form the breakfast area is terrifict ! Very close to city centre ! Nice rooms ! Pleasant atmosphere!!!
A comfortable stay in the middle of the city/town. There are various room options available to suit all budgets. try and take a room on a higher floor facing the streets. Because the streets in this town are very happening, colorful and full of live :-)
This hotel is in a great location, just off the main square. The views from the roof of the hotel are amazing! The room itself was possibly one of the smallest I've ever stayed in but it was decorated and furnished nicely. The location does have its price, the noise from the square was loud and constant until 3am then at 5am all the garbage disposal trucks and street cleaners start there noisy work. So my sleep experience was not a good one. The hotel is also a nightmare to get to, good luck with sat nav, I would seriously recommend calling the hotel for directions
Centrally located, the Best Western San Donato is within walking distance of the major sites of Bologna, and close to the markets where one can eat and shop well. The single room I had was small and dark, save for one small window and a bright and sunny bathroom. My room, facing a back street, was quiet. The whole place could use a thorough renovation as it looks like it's had the same fixtures since the early 80s. Ashtrays are scattered throughout the shared spaces even though the hotel is non smoking. Perplexing! The staff was polite. The most special thing about the San Donato were the views from the terrace where one can have breakfast or an aperitivo after a long day of sightseeing, and the rooftop panoramic views of the city.
All staf is good expecially Paolo! He is the best barman in the word ...very nice aperitivo that you cqn drink on the nice terrace and i am happy to stay in this beautiful hotel in the centre ciy. See you soon
I was put off by reviews of the noise and asked for a room at the rear of the hotel then moved to the front rooms and ended up with a huge corner room complete with antique fireplace and two street facing windows. We heard no noise at all anywhere in the hotel and with all windows open in the morning for summer freshness, there was only the sound of the street sweepers. We love this hotel's front rooms for their heritage décor, aspect towards the two leaning towers, the street view and the open air café atmosphere. They are worth the extra cost for the extra room as well. It is fun to hear people enjoying themselves in the street below. The stunning view towards belfries, turrets and quaint rooftop gardens from the breakfast open air terrace, sells this heritage hotel as well as the superb buffet and wonderful service. Whenever there was a problem, maintenance staff quickly remedied to ensure a maximal comfort stay. The wifi was extremely fast from all rooms. The only negative is that like many hotels in Europe now, it allows pets. I would encourage all hotels to offer no pet rooms as they do non-smoking rooms. Be aware also there is quite a lot of difference in the sizes of rooms. Some double rooms appear to be larger than others as are family rooms. You have to know your way around the hotel to know which are best. I loved the street facing rooms of any size.
Pros: Centrally located in the heart of Bologna's nightlife Cheaper than the surrounding hotels Nice Breakfast Cons: Small rooms Less than average service Too noisy neighborhood, not recommended for families
was here for a week had a lovely old colonnial type room all dark wood but shower cubicle tiny and narrow they really should try to refurbish the showers but very nice great view of the two towers and piazza maggiore so close too breakfast was ok but the scrambled egg was always cold even if getting there first thing staff in the breakfast room were just lovely and they worked so hard but always smiling and friendly lovely touch of afternoon tea and biscuits to help yourself to reception staff werent very friendly apart from one lovely lady should of got her name and annoyingly had to keep handing in my key wouldn't stay here again though due to the eggs as breakfast is a big thing for me when it comes to hotels
Excellent location, good room. Wifi- only worked well in lobby/bar area of our floor. Nice bar, great view from terraces. Our room overlooked the busy cheerful pedestrian only piazza two levels below. People talking and drinking til late, but I found this a pleasant background babble, and it was totally quiet if one closed the window. You step out of this hotel and walk anywhere within minutes. Also, being in a pedestrian area it is not noisy.
The hotel is in an excellent location close to Due Torre and Piazza Maggiore. Wifi in my room worked well, breakfast good choice, opportunity to sit outside. The hotel has a spacious roof terrace offering an excellent view of roof top Bologna. Hotel staff serviced room promptly and efficiently early in the day, reception staff were very helpful.
We decamped to Bologna after dreadful weather down the country. Booked this hotel and arrived within a few hours. The location was great for us after much driving earlier in the holiday. Downside was a room with a view but overlooking a very popular and hence noisy bar - worth it as we were only there 2 nights. Breakfast was included in our rate but wasn't expensive at 5 euros anyway and was good value. The bar on the second floor and the rooftop terrace gave fabulous panoramic views over the city. Would return in a heartbeat.
Ended up spending a night in Bologna; in the centro area. The Best Western (Hotel San Donato) to be distinguished from the other BW in Bologna is in a wonderful location. It is right next to the beginning of the Jewish Ghetto area. It is also a few blocks from all types of shopping. The staff was terrific, there was a bar on the second floor (1st floor in Italy as the ground floor is not counted as floor one), and there is outside seating next to the bar if one wants to look at the views, take pics or merely have a drink. The is also a roof top outdoor area where drinks can be drunk, and the views of the city can be appreciated. The room was fine and very quiet. Breakfast was not free for our category of room but reasonably priced and quite good. If you can get to Bologna - it's worth staying at this Best Western. jr
Stayed 1 night for business trip. Hotel was in a very good location and a very nice terrace. Especially in the sunset, light is very good for the view around. Unfortunately single rooms are very small, but they have enough amenity inside. If you will need to open the room window at night, be prepared for the laughs, cries, shouts of young people chatting outside.
Although sited in a historic building, this is a modern up-to-date hotel such as you would find in any American city. It is free of the quirks and excentricities found in many mid-priced Italian hotels. The rooftop terrace is a nice addition. The hotel lacks no feature that one would expect in a hotel in its price range EXCEPT WIRELESS INTERNET SERVICE THAT WORKS. In our room, the wireless internet was so slow and unreliable as to be useless. The only place that the connection was usable was in the second floor lounge. This is becoming a pet peeve of mine. Hotel owners install a wireless modem/router somewhere on the premises and advertise that they have free wireless internet, but they do not take the necessary steps to provide reliable coverage to all the rooms. Not a good policy.
We just visited the rooftop (accessible to all at 9 EUR per person - which also gives right to one drink). The view of the 2 towers and watching the sunset made this a memorable evening. The staff is friendly and generous with the snacks. Recommended to anyone who is looking for a nice place to have a drink, away from the traffic and the noise.
My husband and I spend 3 nights in this hotel. We enjoyed our stay, though by American standards, it may be disappointing for some. On the positive side, this hotel is in a super central location. All the "must see" sightseeing is walking distance as is shopping and restaurant choices. If you want to be in a central location, you really can't get anything better! For a hotel located in a city with a lot of historical value, it is on par with other Italian hotels we have stayed at for the price and category. The room size was average (i.e, considered small by American standards), though the bed was quite comfortable and the room clean. The bathroom was also average (i.e., small shower and flimsy towels by American standard), though had good water pressure and temperature. Breakfast was included with a good variety of hot and cold items. The hotel also has a gorgeous rooftop terrace with 360 degree views of the city (worth going up there once just to take pictures!) and a bar with a separate small terrace overlooking the towers. We stayed here as part of a small tour group. Our room was facing an enclosed courtyard shared with 3 or 4 other rooms. There wasn't a view, but city noise level was minimal and I had great sleep quality (I am a very light sleeper). However, some of the people in our tour had rooms overlooking the city, but complained of difficulty sleeping with the city noise below. If you are a light sleeper, you might want to make an advanced request. Of note, ear plugs are supplied in the room. I can see where some people used to American standards will be quite disappointed with this hotel. This is a no frills, unmemorable hotel, though being in the city center makes up for the lack of charm. In the end, this is a Best Western property, so I think it was on par with what you would expect from a Best Western.
My stay at the Best Western in Bologna was a bit mixed. On the positive side: + the location close to the two towers is very convenient and close to the center. + the rooftop terrace has an amazing view over the city. + The breakfast was good with lots of choices and extremely friendly staff. + The rooms were decent overall on the inside although there were some annoying things. + Wifi was decently good for a hotel and free For the negative things - The matress of my single bed was extremely hard, so much so that I had bad back pain after night one. I was in town on business for 6 days and this was not fun. - My room was extremely noisy in the evenings, as the party street of bologna is directly underneath. On the weekend it was so loud that sleep was barely possible, This probably depends on the side your room is facing. Make sure you get a good one. - The shower had no mobile showerhead, just a fixed one on the top (which I absolutely hate) and the shower head was full of these white carbon residuals. Summary: The discomfort of the bed really made this a bad stay for me, but if you like hard mattresses, go for it.
This hotel is in a great location for restaurants, shopping and sights seeing. The hotel staff were nice and friendly, Breakfast had everything and was very nice, there is also a fantastic view from the roof terrace
This hotel looks nice on the outside and has a great location in the center, but needs a redo in the lobby , hallways and guest rooms. Dark, dated and depressing rooms, look like decorated in the 70s. The front desk and breakfast room help was excellent. Breakfast food was not very good, stale croissants, many choices but nothing good . I ended up eating canned peaches, juice and fortunately the breakfast waitress offered us hot coffee, cappucino and hot chocolate once we sat down on the beautiful rooftop terrace. Best part of the hotel, were the couple of small terraces with tables, so look for a table there.
My favorite hotel in Bologna - possibly a little hard to find the first time, but the location makes up for it, lively but still quiet enough. It's close to everything, the rooms are clean and the staff is nice.
Once we got to this hotel we were very well treated and glad to have arrived BUT driving there was impossible without assistance from a taxi driver and little bit of audaciousness against some street vendors whose tables we nearly overturned to find this wonderfully and centrally located hotel and only had to pay an additional 24 euro/day for parking.... When the desk clerk registered us and was told about our difficulty in getting to the hotel, she simply shrugged and said, "yes, I know." and gave us a schematic map that would have been absolutely no help -- BUT the hour it took us to get from the periphery road to the hotel was trumped by the wonderful location of this hotel and the fact that we did not need to use our car for the two days we stayed. Breakfast was very good and service was as good as can be expected.
The San Donato is located in the heart of the University of Bologna neighborhood and adjacent to major attractions, like Piazzas Maggiore & Nettuno, as well as very good local trattorias and shopping. A slight drawback is the thinness of the walls, but that's the only negative. The breakfast is very good and has offerings for most tastes, and the staff are really friendly, helpful and go the extra mile.
Stayed for 4 nights. I am BW Diamond. I booked an economy room and was upgraded. I did not try the breakfast. The good: How could you not love the location? So wonderful to be near great restaurants, shops and the main square. Staff is great--very friendly and helpful. Was pleasantly surprised that the TV had CNBC and Bloomberg--A+ to the hotel for that but the TV screen was too small. And the wifi was good speed however it was most annoying to have to sign in every few minutes. Nice BW Diamond Elite amenity of a welcome drink at the bar plus free minibar. OK there was only water and soda in the minibar bit it was a nice gesture. As with most Best Westerns you can ask for a tea setup and they will bring it to the room. Very much appreciated. There is also Tea at the bar which you can help yourself to all day. The bad: Unfortunately this list is too long. ***The hotel is in need of a large renovation. Furniture is old and shabby and feels dirty. The walls are thin and heaven forbid there is a person staying next door, you hear every word they are saying even when they are talking softly, the TV, and in my case a screaming baby who woke me up more than once during the night (fortunately, they were only there for one night). The hotel was nearly empty--I'm sure the hotel is aware of the noise problem so why do they feel the need to put guests next door to each other. Spread guests out when there is room until you (hotel) can fix this noise issue by adding insulation within the walls. Ear plugs are provided (my first clue there might be a noise issue) but they do nothing to help. My room needed a new mattress and much more lighting. There is no way to read at night with the lights provided. i asked for a standing lamp and they brought a desk lamp which broke the second time I tried to turn it on. And a desk lamp would not have solved the problem which needed overhead light. As mentioned before they have a terrible set up with the wifi wherein you are kicked out and need to sign in very frequently. Completely annoying and counterproductive particularly when trying to work. Blow dryer is from the stone age and bathroom products are terrible quality. Bring your own. Small outdated TV. Summary: Although the location and the staff are great I would look for another hotel the next time I returned to Bologna. That is, until this hotel does a renovation. Then I would try them again in an instant. Tips: 1) Lots of great restaurants nearby. Try Il Tonello just around the corner. Lovely staff. 2) Get the Bologna Card at the tourist office for 20e. Comes with a walking tour. We had an excellent guide who really loved his city and made us love it too.
Close to everything first time traveler to Bologna was not prepared for such a beautiful city. Hotel San Donato was a nice stay, front desk staff very helpful recommended some wonderful restaurants.Rooms good but walls thin sound transmit from next rooms but was a minor distraction. Breakfast was very good, robust not skimpy and Filipino staff were wonderful and for an incredible 4 Euro each. Good Hotel Good Stay.
The hotel is well located, near the main attractions. The rooms are nice but the shower was very little in our room. Breakfast was good and the staff also very polite. There is a beautiful view of the city from the terrace! We were only disturbed by a phone call before 7 am... the receptionist told us by mistake that a taxi was waiting for us !!! This was not very professional really.
Good location, close to the Towers. Quiet. Aircondition set on the highest temperature and it was still very cold in the night. 4 out of 5 plug-in in the room didn't work. Noisy A/C. Very old rooms. There is also small roofterrace - not an amazing view to the city but nice enough to check it :)
Everything about this hotel smacks of a hotel doing the exact minimum for their guests. For instance, the very bright lights in the room shine directly in your eyes when you are laying down, most hotels put them discreetly in the ceiling or upper wall not facing the very spot every hotel patron sits/lays. These lights need to be on if you are to read or do anything else as the bed lights are desk lights so it is impossible to read by them, as they face down 6" off the side table. All the lobby furniture is shabby, perhaps dirty, I didn't feel comfortable sitting on any of it, either on the first floor or second floor. The shower fixture faces directly out the shower door, and is not adjustable, so you have to have the shower door shut for it not to flood the floor - unfortunately, in order to turn the shower on or off the door needs to be open. The beds have the old fashioned blankets, which are questionable. But, the worst is a distinct smell of men's urinal scented cakes that reeks of smell coverup - this meets you in every area of this hotel. The breakfast was wonderful / great staff / very good food. This hotel is in a perfect location for this wonderful city. Unfortunately, it needs a very inclusive redoing. It would not have been surprising if we had been told that it is a hotel that is also used as a college dorm.
We had a room with balcony and panoramic view - and the view was just perfect. However - there wasn't furniture on the balcony and that would have made the stay just perfect. The room was small. The breakfast was great. The hotel is situated right in the center of the city, which was great, as it is possible to walk practically anywhere.
You can't do any better than this hotel for covenience to the Teatro Communale and Piazza Maggiore. Plus the best gelato on the planet is just down the street. The morning breakfast is wonderful as the number items available will meet your needs. Very clean room and so quiet....except you should know that the nearby bells will wake you up every morning around 7:30 and we loved that sound.
We stayed in this hotel because our flight from Manchester was delayed 3 hours and it made us miss the last train connection to the north of Italy. What can we say? We were so lucky to book it. It turned a unlucky experience into a very pleasant one. The hotel is located in the very center of Bologna. The rooms are spacious, the bathroom is huge. The beds are also very comfortable. In the morning it got even better. Breakfast serves everything (and I really mean everything). Very friendly staff, very helpful and polite. We couldn't chose any better. We decided to spend the day in Bologna and we could leave the luggage at reception which made everything much easier. So if you are going to stay in Bologna, we absolutely recommend this hotel.
This Hotel is in an ancient palace in the very centre of Bologna, 100 metres from the trwo towers.Spotless venue, restored in classical style, Room has fabric tapestry, a really nice common room with breakfast area and a superb view from rooftop terrace. Breakfast (full, very good and rich) in good weather is a must on the open terrace. Exceptionally warm reception desk people, very available to help for any tourist need. Hotel in in the limited traffic area with an internal parking (extra for a reasonable fee) and authorization to reach it by car. Overall excellent value for money too.
My friend and i stayed here for 4 nights. The location is steller. The rooms ok, the beds good, pillows better. the breakfast was great, staff helpful and friendly. all in all a very good experience. I would stay here again. they have parking.
Driving...A little bit of a nightmare to find, pedestrians walking in street and lots of signs so difficult to keep your eye on the roads, signs and sat nav! Onsite parking at the hotel is so expensive €25 a day and to be honest once I was in the town I didn't want to get back in the car again as it was too stressful. Broken glass and bottles where strewn in the streets when I left on Sunday morning so not great for the hire car. Hotel...... room was basic (single room on the 3rd floor facing direction of car park) tiny bed (a little hard) plus side there was a big bathroom...balcony was huge with amazing views of the centre of bologna. Downside.. bells ringing a lot and loud and for a long time. Noise from the streets outside (a lot of noise) until 3am at least when I finally managed to sleep! The room was so hot...air con did nothing. I can only imagine that in the summer when the doors were open that the noise from the streets would be too much! Wifi...It didn't really reach the room and only free for an hour each day..pointless really. Upside.. Nice breakfast and really handy for the centre of town..staff were very friendly and helpful.
My wife and I spent one night in Bologna and this hotel was perfect. Location right next to the Towers is ideal, in the middle of all of the downtown action, and there is a lot. Staff couldn't be more helpful, and we were upgraded to an enormous suite. Free wifi fine. Full breakfast included and is excellent. We were flying from Marconi airport the next day, and chose to leave car at airport and take cabs in/out which given the complicated location of Hotel was a good idea. Only tiny complaint is that the Hotel's walking map of City is very crude with few street names.
Please don't book this hotel if you like a good night's sleep. It's 3am now and I am sitting up in my twin room with balcony. The air condition only throws out hot air in November (15C outside, so not needed) and with the window open or indeed shut, all you can hear is the bar outside, constant shouting, banging of tables......oh! and someone has just been throwing up. How lovely. All the beauty of our trip to Venice on the way here has been extinguished in the last few hours. The beds are soft and pillows hard. I haven't tried the shower yet (no bath) but it looks like it will be a struggle - tiny. Please save yourselves and look elsewhere!
My husband and I stayed here for two nights. We got their earlier than our check in time and only had to wait twenty minutes for our room. We were pleasantly surprised when we got to our room. We booked our hotel with Expedia and were supposed to get a room with a double bed. They upgraded us to a suite, which was very big. It had two TV's. The only downside was that we were supposed to have WiFi in our room and it never worked the two days we were there. We could get WiFi in the common areas of the hotel. The location of this hotel was wonderful and the people at the receptionist desk were very helpful, recommending restaurants that we really enjoyed. One of the receptionist even did the online check-in for me and my husband's return flight home.
Perfect location, beautiful views, kind staff and it ends there - no recognition of loyalty status I was stuffed into the smallest single room available on the property. Being a diamond status member I would have expected amenity or water in my room even if the property was overbooked - "Water in the minibar" was the response from a friendly receptionist. Generally a negative experience with a nice balcony and views, property is quite dated, more 3 stars than 4. Oh and what hotel gives their guests earplugs along with shampoos and soaps.
We were warmly welcomed here on our 4 night stay by the Receptionist, and this warmth extended to all the staff. Nothing was too much trouble - suggest a reasonable restaurant for dinner, fetching coffee at breakfast, doing our on line check in. Our room was quiet and comfortable, and the view from the terrace was stunning. Wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else if we return to Bologna.
Stunning hotel can't fault it. Expensive with city tax etc but if you want a romantic city break you should go here! No restaurant but you can have continental breakfast on the roof and it is 10 minute walk to the main attractions and restaurants.
Chosen because of its location and it was ideal. Room was very good and clean but the shower cubicle was small and the shower itself not the easiest to use Also door wold not close properly Apart from this , it was a great three day stay. Breakfast was excellent and the hotel staff extremely helpful and couldn't do enough. Pity the same couldn't be said of the receptionists on the front desk. Even though it was more expensive than other hotel I considered it good value . Great view from breakfast terrace.
This is a basic hotel with a great location. Close to the old towers and the university. Had booked a family room comprising of two separate rooms, a lounge and a bathroom. It was comfortable and nice.I was happy with my choice since most of the reviewers complained about small rooms. Breakfast room was small but breakfast was actually quite good and staff was very friendly . It can get noisy since there are many cafes and bars. You could question the 4 stars. However, if you keep the expectations to a basic level and are happy with a nice breakfast and an excellent location , the BW San Donato is alright for a short city break
A great location close to downtown historic district. The view from the breakfast nook is spectacular and the roof gives you a 360 view and chairs to relax after a long day of walking. AC had a hard time cooling the room - fine for me who likes it warm but others may find it too warm. Great restaurants near by and this city is a great discovery with almost no crowds and great finds.
