"One night away"

My wife and I booked last minute to stay here last Friday. We booked the suite, which was large, nicely furnished with a lovely deep bath. Hotel looked very smart in a rustic way and the staff were helpful and welcoming. We booked a table and the meal was excellent. Would happily return

"A real little gem"

Jenny B, Brecon, United Kingdom 27/10/2019

My husband and I have just returned from a four night stay at the New Hobbit and we both thoroughly enjoyed it. There were amazing views from the hotel, as it is on a hill above the town (set your sat nav to take you through Sowerby Bridge and not straight the hotel or you will end up driving along very narrow country lanes). Plenty of car parking at hotel. We were orginally booked into a standard double room but were moved into room 22 with a balcony as it had become available at the last minute. A good choice. Room was clean and comfortable, good shower in the bathroom and everything spotlessly clean. All the staff were friendly, approachable and couldn't do enough for us. I, unfortunately, was unwell on our last day and had to stay in bed but my husband managed to get simple food and drink for me whenever he asked at the bar. Our room overlooked the carpark (but had lovely views as well) and road and wasn't noisy at night. We ate at the hotel every day and both enjoyed the food, a good menu in the evening (it was the same menu every day but plenty of choice). We were there in October (out of season so there would probably have been a Specials Board in the peak season). We recommend staying here and will definitely return.

"Fantastic inn with fantastic food and warm environment"

5
Jason C, London, United Kingdom 08/10/2019

This is the second time I stayed at the hotel. I stayed here one and a half years ago for a few days as I had found it online and the price was reasonable. Even then my expectations were beyond amazing - a quaint little country inn up a very dream-esque winding hill with beautiful views from the main part of the hotel of the overlooking Yorkshire town. I have stayed both in the annexe and now staying in the main inn and even though the view wasnt the greatest in the annexe the staff and the food and their willing to accommodate sure made up for it! Any moaners are being too fussy. Its a country inn not The Dorchester. Breakfast is always lovely. Continental plus fresh cooked to order food - some inns and three to four star hotels don't even offer that. The New Hobbit has the friendliest staff and its been actually nice to see people I recognise from my stay a year and a half ago. Beds are ridiculously comfy and rooms very nice with tea and coffee facilities. If I had to be unbiased because I do love this inn my only suggestion would be room service at least during certain points of the day BUT that being said part of staying in a country inn is going down to the restaurant/bar being around fellow dinners and punters and enjoying the lovely atmosphere. The New Hobbit Inn is my go-to when visiting friends in Sowerby Bridge and will continue to visit time and time again.

"Beautiful Hotel in Commanding Location "

4
DMTaylor90, Sheffield, United Kingdom 30/09/2019

I stayed at The New Hobbit as it was only a few miles from the venue for a friends wedding. I'm glad I did! The hotel is beautiful, has been beautifully renovated to make the most of the features of the buildings but with modern decor. Check in was quick and easy and I was provided with a superior double with balcony, when I had only reserved a normal double room. My room was in the outbuilding, accessed from the exterior, upstairs with 3 other rooms. The room is well sized, and tastefully decorated. The bathroom was immaculate as was the room and balcony. The views across the hills were absolutely stunning! Just a shame it didn't stop raining the whole stay. The bed was incredibly comfortable with high quality linens, I was very impressed with the room on the whole. The only downside was there was quite a lot of noise from doors etc when people were coming back from the wedding taking place at the Hotel. Tea and coffee were provided as per most hotels along with an iron and ironing board which was a nice touch as I prefer to have them in the room vs asking for them. Breakfast wasn't included in my rate, but it was no problem to add, and at 10 GBP for a hot buffet and cereal/pastries etc it was good value. I'd happily stay here again, the hotel is beautiful, well located and staff are friendly.

"New but not great"

honestreview14, Liverpool 29/09/2019

On first impression looked great. New build problems sink didn't empty. Extractor fan didn't work so room very steamy. Mirror must have fallen off wall. But not re attached. Specifically asked do you have vegan options as breakfast £12:50 each. The lady said yes while booking in. Called in morning and asked they only had tinned tomato and beans suitable for vegan. I asked do they have any sausage they lady truthfully said maybe only vegetarian. So expensive if only having beans!

"Rooms are nice enough, view isn't that shown by the hotel."

3
Ned K, Oldham, United Kingdom 09/09/2019

Te rooms are nice enough, but the maintenance is very poor. In our room in the accommodation block by the car park, the were bulbs out. the toilet seat was dangerously loose and the radiator in the bathroom leaked, it had a plastic tub under it and by the amount of rust around the valve had clearly been leaking for a long time. On Sundays the menu is 'Roast dinner'. The Roast dinner does not have any alternative to meat for a non meat eater, During breakfast they have one (and a half (also doing the reception)) waiting on. The poor woman is ran off her feet trying to serve everyone. The views advertised I guess must be from one of the rooms in the main hotel as there are trees blocking the views from the 'annex'.

The points you have mentioned regarding the room maintenance have been passed on and addressed in order to rectify these. In regards to the Sunday Carvery we run here at the hotel, on our menu's we give people the option of either a meat of your choice, fish option or a vegetarian dish. These 3 options are available every Sunday and the dishes we choose for vegetarians especially are changed week to week. "Food good shame about the room"

3
Graham S, Braintree, United Kingdom 25/08/2019

We were disappointed with the room. Very basic and no wardrobe just a hanging rail. The windows were in need of replacement and condensation formed overnight. The bathroom was tired and the loo seat wobbled. There was no seal on the shower screen consequently water oozed onto the floor. The downstairs area was very nice and the food was good except Saturday mornings buffet breakfast was poor.

Friendly staff. Fantastic view. Great breakfast with fabulous choices. Clean rooms. Had a lovely stay, only downside was the tiny bathroom with no shelf to put toiletries on, I measured putting one foot in front of the other and it was 6.5 in length and 3.5 in breadth (not inc little shower) it is as big as a bathsheet. I'm only 8 stone and 5foot 5 and I found it cramped, on a 2 night stay I'd have prefered something slightly more roomy...I would stay again but not in room 16. I have attached a photo of the bath sheet that covers the whole floor as if you are indeed a Hobbit then this room would be perfect....still had a great stay as everything else was perfect...this is just an observation

Lovely, dog friendly hotel. Stylish interior, good menu choice. Having a dog with us you are allocated the more older rooms with no views but it was still comfortable. We were allocated room 11 which was very hot!!! You had to have windows open due to the heat so you then had to endure the smell off cooked food which at times was a little over powering and made us feel slightly nauseated! Staff were very friendly and dog friendly which we liked. Food was excellent! Overall we would stay again because of the friendliness and the fact it's dog friendly

"Overnight stay"

3
galaxy36, Manchester, United Kingdom 11/08/2019

My partner had seen this on Facebook a while ago and said that we should go away for a weekend ‘sometime'. After seeing an advert for a Sunday night stay with 3 course Sunday lunch and a glass of Prosecco on arrival. We emailed but didn't get any response so we rang and booked over the phone. The place itself is in a lovely position as you can see over the valley. There was a diversion in place due to roadworks but we managed to find it easily enough. On arrival we were given our keys and were asked whether we wanted lunch straight away or to book a table for later. As we had taken our dog then we were offered to eat in the bar which we declined. On going into our room which is in the original part of the hotel. The room look a bit tired tbh. I expect this was due to the fact we had taken our dog. The head board was wrought iron but had broken and was held together with cable ties. In the bathroom it had stated complimentary toiletries but there was only 1 small bottle for both is us. Unfortunately there was no toilet rolls and no hand soap either. Apart from these little niggles it was adequate and the bed was comfy. The meal itself was very good and the choice of veggies and meats were ample. We both had deserts and coffee along with the Prosecco as neither of us had eaten that day. Later that evening we sat on the decking until the rain came and went in the bar. Staff were friendly and very accommodating. Breakfast was very filling I had scrambled egg and smoked salmon. My partner had a full English aling with croissants, cereals and coffee, tea and juice which you could just help yourself to. All in all very good value. My sister had been and stayed previously and had stayed in the newer part near the car park which have a balcony etc and said that these were immaculate. Not sure if we would stay again unless we left the dog with other family members.

"Never Again"

User 11/08/2019

We booked into the New Hobbit Inn for 3 nights. On arrival we were given keys to Room 2 which is the smallest room I have ever seen, no room for cases. We sat on the bed and it creaked like something from a horror film. We went to reception to ask for a different room and was told they were full. We were booked for another two nights and asked if we could be upgraded to a superior room next day, which was agreed. We left to go to my friends house. We arrived back next morning to be given a key to Room 30, when we entered there was a very strange smell, thought it was a clean product used to clean the room after the guest the previously night, dropped off out cases and left. We arrived back at about 11.30 and the smell was still there, woke up not able to breath, face felt swollen and had to open the windows. Asked a cleaner the next morning if she could tell me what the smell was and she immediately said it was the drain. She went and got us a key for another room. Room 8, small, street noise and the smallest bath I've seen in a long time. I will never stay there again.

"Not as good as it used to be"

3
SpiceGirlLeeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom 10/08/2019

Used to be a great little place when it was privately run. Not so now it's part of a chain Used to have quirky furnishings, atmosphere and a proper country feel to it. When we visited there were ‘colour coordinated' blankets on the seating to cover up the rips, and tatty menus. Having said that the food was good value and super hot (pet hate of mine getting served cold/lukewarm food).

CharliePrice01, Burgess Hill, United Kingdom 23/07/2019

Lovely and quirky rooms. Very comfortable bed and bedding, nice and clean throughout. Helpful and friendly staff. Really good choice on the menu and the food was delicious, with a wide selection of drinks. Plenty of parking space and very reasonably priced. Beautiful views of the town. Breakfast was great too! The bathroom was in need of some TLC, the sink was cracked badly, as was the one in my colleagues' room. The shower kick panel needed replacing and unfortunately the bathroom was boiling as the towel radiator was on. I enquired about this and was told that they can't be turned off, as linked to the hot water system so needed to shut the bathroom door and open the window. As it was a hot summer's day this was still unbearable, they kindly changed my room when I asked to one where it was less intense. The back entrance, nearer the car park, needed cleaning and vacuuming, bits of confetti on the floor, unknown to us it wasn't the main entrance so didn't feel a very nice entrance to the building! Would certainly stay again though, when much cooler!

"Average Stay - More to Dislike than Like"

2
adamcaulfield, Oldham, United Kingdom 14/07/2019

We stayed one night using the Hobbit as a base to visit the Moorcock Inn for dinner. Pro's - Plenty of free car parking - Bar area modern with a good choice of lagers/ales/etc - Friendly check in Con's - The Room ! The pictures on the website are very well done but don't convey the reality of the Superior Room we stayed in. Why? - No View - the view was of the outside drinking/smoking area including the car park - Noise - because of the proximity to the car park you heard every car entering/leaving the car park. - More Noise - there was a private party on at the hotel and we got back to the room around 11.30pm and the music was blaring out.... worst of all lots of people outside drinking and a choice bunch of lads that obviously were v drunk and particularly obnoxious with their language. This would have been horrible if you were staying with a younger family. The management/staff obviously were aware but did nothing. - The Heat - just what you needed on a warm day was a towel rail that was leaking 'brown stuff' over the bathroom floor and was hard wired into full heat. This made the room extremely warm. Why can't there be an option to turn this off? - Heat/Noise Combo - If you opened the window it was more noisy - if you closed the window it was hotter in the room - damned if you do and damed if you don't . In summary I believe the first job of a hotel is to give its guests a decent nights sleep .... the Hobbit failed in this. I wouldn't stay again. -

"Cleaning needs improving and banging doors sorting out"

3
ShoppyLinconshire, Linconshire 12/07/2019

Quite a remote location, would have been nice to be notified before our stay that there were road closures in place near the hotel - would have saved us 30 mins driving around trying to get to it! Friendly staff, good food both for breakfast and evening meal. We had booked a superior room with balcony and it was slightly smaller than I thought it would be, very nice bathroom but the toiletries supplied were an embarrassment for a 4 star hotel - you get a larger bar of soap at Travelodge's. Comfy bed but pillows lumpy. Not much storage but ok for a few nights. Main disappointment is the overall cleaning standards and banging doors. We were in room 23 which meant entering through a communal door which stuck and banged on closing, the stairs were not cleaned during our 4 night visit (there had been a 1” screw in clear visibility all week on the bottom step) and were very dirty. The fire door in the corridor banged every time someone used in, also the floor hadn't been vacuumed during our stay. The room into our room (and all the other rooms on our corridor) banged on shutting. Very disappointing our room was not vacuumed during our stay as thought this was standard procedure in hotels, the bits on the carpet increased during our stay and the bathroom floor was not swept or bits picked up, there was a fingertip of a purple disposable glove on it all week plus bits of toilet paper. For a Best Western Signature hotel standards need to be improved. On arrival there was a Pringles lid on the balcony floor which is still there!

Wonderful weather. The journey was pleasant until we approached roadworks that blocked our final bit of our journey. The sat nav took us to other routes. They were blocked too. Sought help and advised to take a much longer detour. Once we arrived we checked in. We liked our cosy room with gorgeous views from our balcony. We could see for miles. It was nice to chill on the balcony with a refreshing G & T. Dinner was booked before 8 pm. The view in the restaurant was lovely. Staff were friendly and the service was good. The sharing platter was tasty: Italian roasted vegetables, cheese dill balls, dips, oils and homemade breads; chicken supreme and saute king prawns chorizo, chilli's, cherry tomatoes, harissa & pasta; shared the lemon curd cheesecake & raspberry sorbet, downed with a bottle of red pinot noir. Yes we were truly full up! The weather was glorious and we watched the sunset on our balcony. Couldn't wish for a better solstice! The bed was comfy. We kept our french doors slightly open, due to the warm summer night. Early breakfast for us as we were traveling down to Cornwall. My omelette was so tasty and my partner enjoyed his cooked breakfast. Our table was free so we sat in the same spot. We would definitely visit the New Hobbit again. It had a nice atmosphere, with incredible views. It was a good start to our holiday. Tracy and David Tyne & Wear

This is not on the beaten track. But the narrow lanes are worth it. The views are breath taking Certainly worth getting a balcony room. Beds very comfy lovely linens although asked for a top sheet didn't get one. But the bed linens were such good quality I didn't bring it up with reception. The room is small but perfectly formed. large showers Excellent towels You can get. Amelia at lunchtime and evening if you want. Mark down is for no top sheet. "Family Wedding"

User 04/07/2019

We stayed here for 4 nights for a wedding, maybe I was expecting too much for a 4 Star Hotel. When we first arrived we were given keys for 2 rooms and left too it. So myself (middle aged women and 2 teenager girls) were left to bring in 5 suitcases and bags up many steep steps to the rooms, remember we were part of the wedding party, mother of the groom and bridesmaids and I would have thought we would at least been asked did we need any help. To the rooms, that had a hanging rail attached to the wall, no drawers or wardrobe and tiny bathroom facilities and no dressing table etc Basically we were going to live out if our suitcases for 4 days. I did ask to change rooms to something more suitable which we did do, still not ideal but better. The breakfast when ordered fresh when very nice but buffet breakfast was not very good and not hot. For the reception, it's was lovely and the staff really tried but lacked experience and it showed. We had a few mobility impaired people which had a few problems and no help came from the staff it was us the family dealt with them. We also had a new people that do not drink alcohol, ie the grooms family, we asked if we could bring in some nice non alcoholic sparkling drink, we were told no so I assumed they would provide something at the toast , which they did ....... ORANGE JUICE. We did not mention this to the bride and groom but I was very disappointed and to be honest very cross. We had an amazing wedding but the family made the wedding fantastic not the venue and don't even get me started about the terrible DJ who failed most of the night to get us up dancing, infact the only time people danced was when he went on a break and played decent party music on a tape I assume. I would definitely recommend more training for weddings, master of ceremonies should not be dressed in a skirt and jumper! It felt like to me the wedding was an after thought for the hotel. We made the bride and groom feel special , I just wish all the staff had made the same. The icing on the cake .......... nearly asking the Groom for ID (he is 26). We have stayed in much better hotels and it's needs to up its game for weddings. NB Dietary needs for myself were completely ignored despite going through them before the wedding.

"Hot under the Collar"

jillkenyon8, Newark-on-Trent, United Kingdom 22/06/2019

I'll start with the positive. Very friendly and helpful staff, we arrived earlier than we expected, didn't expect to be able to check in, but was told room was ready. We stayed in one of the balcony rooms, which was smaller than expected, but the bathroom was a good size with a very large walk in shower with rain head as well as the standard shower head. Now to the not so positive. The room was extremely hot, with no ventilation, unless you opened the patio doors, which really is not good, as the car park and outside drinking area is opposite these rooms. Opposite our bedroom door is a fire door with a hydraulic door break on it. It had not been adjusted correctly and slammed on every occasion, therefore, late at night, early in the morning, we were woken up by the noise of this door slamming. Breakfast on the first couple of mornings was a good choice of cereals etc, plus a cooked breakfast of your choice. On the third morning, we were told it was just a buffet breakfast, fried eggs over cooked, toast inedible as it was so hard after sitting under hot lamps for god knows how long. The night before a large party of guests had arrived for a wedding, so that was obviously why it was buffet breakfast the next morning. An easy option for the hotel, but not for guests. As it clearly states on their website they will cook anything freshly for you. Finally I would like to say this is a competitively priced hotel, with lovely staff, but the above comments need to be addressed.

KevinP1314, Monifieth, United Kingdom 17/06/2019

My god daughter held her wedding reception at this fabulous venue, the staff were outstanding, food tasted great. The rooms kept separate from the main building were presented at an exemption standard. Our journey from Scotland was made complete with this excellent venue choice. A massive thank you to all the staff who assisted with maintaining a loving harmony.

A charming hotel, friendly, welcoming, great bar, smashing breakfast, proper coffee, comfy beds, loads of parking and a £4 taxi ride down to Sowerby Bridge and the bright lights. Couldn't fault it and the value is outstanding.

"Most uncomfortable night ever"

1
User 05/06/2019

Stayed here in one of the rooms with a balcony in the adjacent building. Small but nicely decorated inside. However, the room was like an OVEN despite having the doors to the balcony open all night. Absolutely unbearable. And the seating area right outside the rooms meant there were people drinking and being really noisy until 2 a.m or even later. There should at least be signs up asking for consideration to other guests. The rooms underneath us had no balcony so God knows how those people fared! Badly thought out altogether. Move the seating area and install air conditioning would be my recommendation.

Stayed two nights while working in Sowerby Bridge. Can't fault the hotel or restaurant it is really very good. The room was big, clean, comfortable & had a good ensuite with a bath. The roads getting up to the Hobbit are amazingly cramped & tiny, the sat nag brought me back on such a ridiculous road with an impossible turn that the van could not get round (not a big van) I actually had to go straight on to a farm at he dead end to turn round and approach from a different direction to get up the bank! Of course this is not the hotels fault. I had two really relaxing nights. Very quiet apart from a few passing cars through the night. The restaurants service & meals were very good and value for money. I would definitely stay here again if in the area.

Me and my girlfriend stayed here for a Sunday night away from home in May. The place is very cosy and well decorated both in the room area and in the bar. The food was also fantastic and the drinks were fairly priced. All members of staff were very friendly and helpful. Lovely views over the valley, would certainly return.

DeeVincentDay, Sheffield 28/05/2019

This hotel is fantastic value for money. The room is of average size and nicely decorated. a big plus for me is that there was an iron and ironing board in the room so I did not need to go hunting for a member of staff. The bathroom was beautiful with a large walk-in shower. We had a first-floor room with a balcony with views overlooking Sowerby Bridge and they were stunning. We had a really good night's sleep. The restaurant offered a good selection of food on the menu and when it arrived it was superbly cooked. Breakfast was also very good with a selection of hot dishes and continental fare. The only drawback is that it is situated on a very narrow road that is also very steep as you approach the hotel from Sowerby Bridge. There is an alternate route that is less taxing but it was a bit of a drive around.

We were looking for somewhere to stay overnight so we wouldn't have to journey to Yorkshire and back in a day and this came up in a search. We booked because the price was right but weren't expecting much. How wrong could we be? This was excellent in many ways. We had a superior double room in the annexe which even had a small balcony which overlooked the surrounding hills. The room was quite small but contained everything we could possibly need....a comfortable bed, a flat screen TV and drinks making facilities.....the supplies of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and sugar were very generous by the standards of most places. The bathroom was excellent with a highly efficient walk in shower. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly staff member who checked us in and directed us to our room. We ate in the restaurant and enjoyed the Sunday Carvery. At all times staff were both attentive and friendly. Overall we were really impressed and would certainly stay here again if the rate was competitive.

We stayed for one night... The room was excellent and beautifully designed.... We ate in the restaurant and the food was first rate, all of the staff were warm and welcoming... We were not rushed from the table or made to feel we had to stop relaxing and chatting... We had a great nights sleep topped off with a perfect buffet style breakfast... Top rate would recommend to anyone and if we are visiting again we will certainly return to this hotel.

Our daughter got married at the hotel and we stayed for two nights. It provided a wonderful setting and I would totally recommend it as a wedding venue. The food and service was brilliant and nothing was too much trouble whilst we prepared the room prior to the service, and throughout the day. We'd booked out the hotel and everyone seemed very happy with their rooms. Ours was great - very comfortable and spacious. Thanks to Claire and her staff for an excellent day!

The second time we've stayed here and will definitely be returning The hotel is situated on hillside overlooking stowerby bridge with great views it's as plenty of free parking and WiFi The staff are exceptional and friendly nothing is to much trouble The pub is also excellent with a great menu and very reasonably priced with a great outside seating area The rooms are modern and clean with W you would expect from a 4 star hotel and are very comfortable, and some of the rooms have balconies with great views of the valley The breakfast is also spot on and is a buffet style set up with everything you would want All in all it's a little gem and is always well priced

We booked the hotel after a previous visit to the venue through work. It was intended to give my new wife and I a stayover following our wedding in Halifax that afternoon. The hotel looks quaint and homely but don't think that it's old fashioned by any means - the decor was clean and well maintained and staff offered a warm welcome on arrival. Our room was well positioned, albeit up some quite steep, narrow, stairs. We hadn't really made any specific requests for the room as the intention was to just drop our overnight gear before heading to our evening celebration but we were instantly taken by the quality of the room with ample space in the bathroom which is rare for a smaller hotel. Comfort was, without a doubt, the experience we had and a lovely freshed cooked breakfast the next day was perfect for the beginnings of our married life together.

This is a beautiful pub with great decor but the rooms are disappointing. Superior room was tiny space and not worth the extra money. No face clothes No tissues No cotton buds Room wasted services one day when we went out at 8.30 popped back at 12 to get changed left again at 13.30 and didn't return till after midnight. Sunday breakfast was a buffet and they ran out of sausages! No black pudding. With all this said staff with very nice especially Derick the night-man. Fabulous weekend overall.

We stopped here whilst visiting the nearby Moorcock Inn. We had one of the new rooms outside the main building. It was very nicely done, comfortable and a lovely shower. My only quibble would be that it seemed a little chilly and there was no room thermostat. Suspect it may be underfloor heated. To be fair we were only in the room for under an hour before we met friends in the bar and so never felt the need to contact reception. By the time we came back later that night it seemed fine. Breakfast was good.

"Disappointing"

mrslister116, Durham, United Kingdom 26/03/2019

the room: First of all the room was tiny. Barely enough room to move around the bed never mind for our belongings. The cupboard space was not enough even for the 2 nights we stayed. When I got into bed in the evening I noticed some brown stains on the duvet cover. Our room looked out onto the rear car park. There were no net curtains or anything to block the view from the car park into our room so this meant that in the morning when we wanted to enjoy a cup of coffee in bed we had to keep the curtains closed. There was no shower mat. The bar/restaurant: I was pleased that there were some alcohol free choices that were not pop. Although there are vegan friendly choices on the main menu we did not have the vegan burger as it would have come without a bun as there was no vegan option for this. And no vegan dessert option. Also the mango chutney on the onion bhaji starter was more like Christmas sweet mince which was a bit odd. There was no food available for us when we returned on the Sunday night, even the crisps had milk in them. No vegan spread for breakfast although the lady on the Monday morning had thought that the flora was vegan but when we looked at the box it had milk in it. It is also so easy to buy vegan suitable sausages (Linda McCartney, Sainsbury shroomdogs etc) however the ones this hotel uses have had egg in them. All in all I was disappointed in our stay. This is not a cheap hotel and when we see 4 stars I would say people have certain expectations.

Stayed here for one night and couldn't have asked for better. Room was ready early at 2pm when we arrived. We had a double room it was nice not much of a view but we went straight out when we got there. It's a 15 minute walk into the town centre down a few very very steep county lanes, we decided to get a taxi back after some food and a few drinks. Only cost £4 for the taxi. Comfortable room and bed with all that you would expect. However, to paraphrase the Genie in Aladdin "iddy-biddy" bathroom. Ridiculously small and frankly not appropriate Nevertheless I am happy to accept that that was my misfortune as others have praised the bathrooms. Remember to stipulate in your booking Public areas of a very comfortable and high standard. Beautiful in fact. Grand piano and double log burner. Heaven Breakfast provided buffet and cereals and a good range of menu options including vegetarian. Most important for me - good fresh ground coffee I woukd certainly consider staying here again but I would check the bathroom first

Friendly and efficient staff. Very pleasant and quiet location for the hotel (but don't book here if there is any chance of a heavy snowfall, as the tiny lanes are likely to be blocked). The hotel does "offer rooms with great views" but mine wasn't one of them, as it faced a rock cliff. Pleasingly spacious rooms with basic but adequate furnishing, not over-heated and the windows actually opened to permit some fresh air in the room.. Downside - only one clothes hanger in the wardrobe. Restaurant was OK but no more - the chef's special confit of rabbit was tasty but very over-cooked and the blunt table knife broke rather than cut it. The accompanying red wine jus was delicious, the croquettes were OK, but the green beans were not so much "al dente" as "ah'll need a new denture". The home-made cheesecake dessert was excellent. The wine by the glass was very good but rather over-priced at £7.60 for 250ml. Overall, pretty good and I would stay there again.

"Ok room. Awful food"

3
Road31882829582, Bury, United Kingdom 28/01/2019

The room was fine. The bathroom was amazing but the bedroom had broken lamp shades and stains on the wall. The food was disgusting. Sweet chilli chicken so spicy (HOT) it made my partner unwell and unable to sleep. When I complained about the food I was told “really” then smiled at and a half hearted apology. All in all it was an ok visit, but the main reason we enjoyed it was because we enjoyed our own company. The room was small but acceptable, I've stayed in better value hotels. The breakfast was tiny compared to other hotels I've stayed in. The reviews that say “amazing breakfast” clearly haven't had a good British breakfast. The staff were all in all nice and friendly with the acception of one member of staff who barely spoke a word to us when we checked in, then spent over 15-20 minutes talking to other couples who were older than us. Maybe it was because we were young.

Lovely little hotel/restaurant with very cosy rooms, really welcoming after a brisk tramp over the moors. Typically friendly Yorkshire hospitality, welcoming, friendly & helpful. Would be a great venue for a wedding/celebration, as they can cater & sleep lots of guests. Dog friendly & Great value too.

"A night at The Hobbit"

I had a meal booked with friends at The Moorcock Inn (also excellent!) and stayed at The Hobbit as it is conveniently close by, within 15 mins walk. A warm welcome awaited me and I was quickly settling into my small double room. Everything was clean and warm and I had a wonderful and peaceful nights sleep. The food menu looked great but as I had a meal already booked I didn't eat here. Good value at £55 for the night. Would definitely stay again.

Can't fault the New Hobbit, very well presented hotel, warm, comfortable and welcoming. A minor problem with our room was dealt with immediately and efficiently to our total satisfaction and otherwise everything was excellent. We ate in the restaurant and the meal was first rate. Getting good directions to find the hotel, especially in the dark, is HIGHLY recommended, it's not easy and note that the location is outside of the town and not really walking distance to town and up VERY steep hills

Nice pub, old building with much modernisation, warm and welcoming. We had a decent room, only snag was the walk and steps outside to get to it on a rainy and windy evening. The approach from Sowerby Bridge can be daunting, steep and narrow, even perhaps impossible when snow or sleet around. All in all reasonable value except for breakfast, how can they serve poached eggs that were hard boiled accompanied by bacon cooked hours previously and the consistency of shoe leather. But they did and it rankled.

"Disappointed by the finish of the room"

At first glance as we walked into the suite we had booked it looked very opulent, just what we were hoping for (given the pictures online). However, appearances were deceptive and despite the swank and swagger of the first impression it became apparent that the room was actually care-worn, more than a little shoddy and positively Baltic in temperature. Several of the spotlights in the ceiling didn't work and one of those that did kept flashing on/off, so we had to use the bedside lamps. The bathroom was absolutely freezing and water wasn't much hotter. We were freezing in bed so we took the throw off of the ottoman at the foot of the bed to reveal that the top of the ottoman was severely damaged. We found most of the staff to be pleasant, in a non-chalant, bare minimum, see-it-all-before kind of way The only saving grace of this establishment was the food. The food was delicious. Such a shame that the staff can't push themselves to be friendlier and more accommodating and it's unforgivable the state of the suite considering what we paid. This should have scored 5/5 but it let itself down.

Hi Collibosher, Thank you for taking the time to provide us with feedback regarding your recent stay with us here at The New Hobbit hotel. We are sorry to hear your stay wasn't all what you was expecting as this is something we as a hotel don't want to discover when we are meeting guest requirements and making sure their overall stay is enjoyable. In regards to the heating within the room itself, if the overall climate was too cold for yourselves if mentioned to a member of staff or phoned down to our reception using the phone provided in the room we could have looked into this and increased the heat so that the temperature was much more satisfying. We are glad to hear you enjoyed the food within our restaurant, we hope to see you again in the near future. Kind Regards, Team Hobbit

Spent two nights in this hotel with my wife and nothing was to much trouble for the staff Small minor detail was that the mirror could have been positioned a bit closer to the plug socket to allow for my wife to use the hair dryer coupled with the use of the mirror Small leak in radiator was seen to almost immediately other than this highly I would highly recommend

Booked for an overnight stay with my dogs and was over the moon when what you saw was what you got.The room was one of the same beautiful rooms on the website..not some make do dog rooms. The dogs were allowed into the bar eating area where the staff couldn't do enough for you. The food was excellent with the breakfast bring a hearty buffet style...dogs allowed again. The views were superb from the hill and the dog walks to the rear were amazing..cant wait to go back in the summer and eat so fresco on their terrace. To sum up...beautiful,very clean room, good food, brilliant service and very dog friendly.

Needed a one night stopover in Halifax and found this little gem in Sowerby Bridge. The name attracted us in the first place but when we read the reviews, we went ahead and booked. So glad we did. It's a fabulous little place. Very tastefully decorated and furnished in a simple contemporary style. Super comfy beds and really clean everywhere. The hotel restaurant was beautifully laid out. Food and service were exceptional. The waitress was lovely. So friendly and accommodating... we asked for 'cremated bacon' for breakfast and that's exactly what we got - petfect! Just how we like it. Have booked again for this week. Would highly recommend.

We booked here as were unable to get Premier inn and glad we did. Only just found out it was a Best Western Signature Hotel. Stayed here for 3 nights and was extremely pleased with accommodation. The hotel has rooms within it and rooms in new block adjacent to main building. Our room was in adjacent block upstairs at end of corridor, it was a lovely clean room with a nice shower and wash area. Toiletries were provided and nice fresh white towels. Bed was comfy and room was warm and cozy. Tea, various types, coffee, hot chocolate and biscuits were provided in the room. In Summer we would recommend going for room with balcony, there are seats on balcony so you can sit and enjoy fantastic views over the valley. Breakfasts were excellent with a real good selection available to suit all. We had Sunday Carvery and it was 1st class, very tasty and reasonable priced, would recommend. Even the children's menu was excellent. The location is excellent, just a short distance from Sowerby railway station, only down side is the roads to it are very narrow, not much room in certain parts. OK in daylight but can be a bit scary in darkness, as little to no street lighting. One thing would advise is don't rely on Sat Nav it can send you down a really difficult way, It is inclined to use shortest route. Use hotels written directions. Would also say location could be a problem in winter snow and ice. We would recommend the hotel to friends as our stay was excellent, the staff were very friendly and helpful.

This is a compact hotel and the staff were very welcoming and relaxed. I loved the long main room which contained the lounge, restaurant/function room, carvery, bar and reception. The bedrooms were beautifully appointed and everywhere was warm and inviting.Fabulous shower! 5 stars to the restaurant, folks were arriving late and it had been a busy day but the carvery kept serving to try and feed everyone; great service. The food was plentiful and delicious. Very relaxing and astounding views over the dale to Sowerby Bridge. The hotel is quite a climb up the valley side and a good street map is worthwhile. Single person discount was given. Recommended!

Great weekend. Lovely, well appointed room, outside the hotel with a balcony with great views of sowerby bridge and beyond. Two peaceful nights of sleep. Fab breakfast and lovely staff. Only thing that spoiled it for us was the meal in the restaurant. Gristly steak and anything fried like chips, very overcooked. Fat definitely needs changing. Think the kitchen may have been over run serving a function and a full restaurant. Quite reasonable prices if cooked right.

After an enjoyable meeting up with friends in Hebden Bridge, l didn't want the fun to stop. So, l decided to stay overnight. Unfortunately, taking into account my spontaneous decision, l began to realise how expensive and limited the accommodation is in Hebden Bridge. I also had an additional "factor" to take into consideration ..... a West Highland terrier named Jasper. Once a pet is thrown into the equation, you're options become even more limited. After a stint on Google, I was lucky enough to find the New Hobbit hotel in Sowersby Bridge. Literally a couple of miles up the road. The accommodation was exceptional, reasonably priced, dog friendly, and served an amazing breakfast. 10 out of 10 all round. Will definitely be going back, and recommending friend's and family to do likewise. A real gem of a find.

"Our perfect day "

Well where do we start... We booked our wedding here for 18/08/2018. We fell in love with the place once we had been shown around , it fitted with what we wanted with it having rooms for our guests who had to travel to spend our big day with us & also being able to hold the whole wedding here it just seemed the perfect venue. The hobbit has a lovely decor in both the bar and the reception room , the bedrooms are lovely too. The bridal suite is spectacular. We decided on a vintage theme wedding with traditional afternoon tea which we were assured could be done no problem. Not all of the venues we enquired about could do this on such a large scale. Every meeting had with claire & kevin was pretty much informal , effortless but pretty much to the point which made us feel relaxed & nothing seemed to phase either of them. Alot of hard work was put in creating our special day both beforehand and on the day. The timings and order of which everything was planned was done to perfection. We had a image in our minds of how the day would be and the team at the hobbit delivered a day far more than we could of ever imagined it too be like. The room was perfect... the ceremony went like clock work all the...the afternoon tea was a real success even catering for my wifes allergy was no problem at all for the chef and his team , all of the staff worked seamlessly throught the day. This was definately the best afternoon wev ever had and that was echoed by our guests who were so compliementry about the food & service... the whole team pulled together under claires leadership and delivered a day that our guests are still talking about now and will be for a long time to come, every one of our guests both from the day and the evening have said how much they enjoyed it. The whole of team at the hobbit made our day perfect one we shall never forget We cannot thank all of the people involved enough for the effort put in by the team on the day and special thanks must go to claire & kevin they are the nicest people you can hope to deal with. This place holds a special place for us now and we are so glad we chose to get married here. We shall be returning very soon ☺ Sheldon & Zara

Nicely located and quiet on top of the valley above the town of Sowerby Bridge, and an ideal base for visiting local area. Very good homely food, rooms ok and overall excellent value for money (you get a better deal by booking direct). If cycling, be warned it's a challenging 20% ramp up from the town below!

"Disappointing, not up to standard expected!"

We stayed at The New Hobbit recently for a friends wedding and whilst the wedding was lovely and we throughly enjoyed it, we felt disappointed by the standard of accommodation & food provided at The New Hobbit. We paid £75 for a double room per night including breakfast. The meal we had privately on the first night was nice, however both of us spent much of the night then ill on the toilet & again the following morning, which could only have been what we had eaten in the restaurant however we put this down to being a one off. The room itself was small, the bathroom ridiculous, anyone slightly above a ladies size 16 would have struggled to fit in the shower cubicle. The furnishings were well worn and not in keeping with the style of the main part of the pub, our high hopes for the quality of the room based on the main decoration in the pub were quashed as soon as we entered the room which was very basic and if I'm honest a bit dark & depressing. We found the rooms to have no sound proofing whatsoever, we could hear conversations of those stopping next door and we didn't want to watch our TV late as we knew those staying next door to us had small children that we didn't want to wake, that's how thin the walls were. The main door leading to the corridor didn't feel adequate, you could hear the constant creaking of the floorboards everytime someone walked past not to mention that none of the doors have soft closers on them so they constantly banged loudly when anyone left or came back to their room. It's a basic expectation that hotels no matter what their size would have thought about sound proofing their rooms to ensure guests privacy and little things like soft closers on doors should really be a given. Our room was absolutely unbearably stifling hot, the floor in the bathroom was red hot to walk on, we slept with the window wide open and it was still uncomfortable. In fact the whole hotel was uncomfortably warm all weekend and we mentioned it a number of times to staff who obviously had heard this complaint many times, and this is consistent with previous reviews of the same complaint, however the management replies advise any heating issue has been rectified, it hasn't. Our room was uncomfortably warm, as was the whole hotel. The bed was rock hard and uncomfortable to say the least. Not at all the standard we expected. Breakfast on the first morning was to order, and when my eggs arrived they were undercooked the white of the egg still raw. The second morning it was buffet and we found everything to be dripping in oil or butter, it was inedible and they ran out of sausages so some guests were told they had to wait 25 mins for some more. We left hungry. Strangely, the 'hotel' locks the doors to the main reception area between certain hours, and if you have an emergency there is an A4 sheet of paper cello taped to every entrance/exit with a phone number to call clearly for emergency only. This is not something we have ever experienced in a 'hotel' before. We found this out in the early hours when our room was unbearably hot and we wanted to speak to reception to see if there was a reason for this and to possibly get some water as both our hot and cold tap in our bathroom were providing red hot water. We found this unacceptable and as other guests might have experienced we didn't feel we could ring the our of hours number for assistance other than absolute emergency. We knew the hotel was fully booked for the wedding so although we reported issues to reception, we knew there was little they could do about the room so we just got on with it, needless to say we wouldn't return as hotel guests again. Lastly, something others have mentioned in reviews is the lack of organisation and management, the staff seemed inexperienced and flustered all the time. The bar/kitchen/wedding co-ordinator seemed to all be the same few people rushed off their feet, only one older gentleman (presumably owner) seemed to be floating about not really being helpful. Often people waiting for drinks as no one serving behind the bar and people queuing to check in. It felt at times, a bit chaotic. It's a real shame as it's a lovely venue with lots of potential just poorly run and standards not kept upto parr. I knew the previous owner who originally developed the property and you can see the difference in the quality and standard. Sadly we won't be booking to eat or stay again.

Great view on top of hill. Superior double room was like it was new it was so clean. Food great we had evening meals as well as breakfast. Only dust we could find was on top of large shower head because we were doing a " 4 in the bed style" look over. Everything as spot on and we stay away every weekend in different hotels,.

We where looking for something a bit different from our usual weekend break favourite and came across The New Hobbit. We where not disappointed from the moment we checked in till the time we checked out . The staff and service was 2nd to none. The room was lovely a cozy , comfortable and well equipped . The bathroom was great with a smashing power shower with piping hot water. Food was amazing , the range would suit everyone I am sure, from the unusual via the specials menu to the usual steaks , burgers , pasta dishes. All beautifully cooked freash with each order . Great range of wines , spirits and beers to accompany the meal . Breakfast was interesting on the Saturday we had a breakfast menus that had a huge range of breakfast fair which was lovely and Sunday because it was full ( I am assuming) we had a hot buffet . Everything on the hot buffet was piping hot and was of high quality , my husband even went back for seconds on the sausages. Would we come again , definitely and we are going to tell our friends about this great find.

This hotel is on top of a very steep hill, so if your thinking of walking into town, then probably think again. However said that, room was clean and comfortable, food was decent and reception staff wonderful. The big question is would you stay again? The answer is yes and perfect for walkers.

We've been visiting the Hobbit for years, just for a drink. So when it closed years ago I was shocked. Luckily its back open again. First time staying over and you won't be disappointed. The rooms are lovely. We stayed in the new rooms with a balcony view. Super comfy beds. Breakfast was lovely. We got chatting to the new owner Kevin, it was fascinating to hear about the history of The New Hobbit. A delightful place to stay if you're planning on a night out in the town, or a relaxing break away. Great value for money too.

Enjoyed my stay. Good value. Lovely views from the beer garden. Nice people. Very good breakfast. Hairy drive up to the hotel on very narrow road. Facilities all in good condition. Bar looked good and would be cosy in the winter.
