« The best hotel & bar in the Lake District »

I've stayed at the Glenridding Hotel many times as it's the perfect base for exploring the mountains or Ullswater Way "The Up's" Reasons to stay:- a. The customer service is exceptional. b. The location is fantastic - just below Helvellyn & striding edge. c. Hotel is spotlessly clean - the rooms & pool are amazing. d. You will never have a better view from a room. e. Food "pizza to die for" "The Downs" f. You eventually have to leave.

« Excellent place to stay with good food »

Excellent hotel, fantastic position beautiful rooms, staff really welcoming and friendly, bonus of a swimming pool. areas for sitting. Lounges, Games Room, Library,

« Excellent welcoming hotel great value »

Warm friendly hotel with comfortable rooms and lovely breakfast Swimming pool available if needed This hotel is five minutes away from the lake which is abundant with activities lots to do. Some of the rooms overlap the lake. Well worth a visit.

« Beautiful setting and brilliant food »

Stopped 2 nights DBB had paid for an executive room with a view of the lake and that's exactly what I got although the room was slightly on the small side. Room was modern and clean .Food in the restaurant both evenings was brilliant and so was the service. Would I recommend it YES but pay the extra and go for an upgraded room

    « So sad..... »

We were on a weekend in the Lakes and were really saddened to see all the devastation by all the recent flooding.....we wanted to see the Hotel , have a drink and enjoy the views but everything in the area has been affected by the recent events which is sad to see...however talking to shop owners across the road from the Hotel, the community is pulling together and they hope to get up and running as soon as possible, The local car pars are free at the moment due to the damage caused , however one of the affected facilities is the tourist information - mostly washed away, so be prepared when visiting this area ; but visit and support those who are now preparing to rebuild businesses and facilities. We were made welcome where we went and bought local to support those that had managed to be open. Good Luck everyone getting businesses and facilities back up and running,

« Nice Hotel, Great Location »

My wife and I stayed at the Glenridding Hotel just before the disastrous flood. It is an old hotel so expect a few creaks and groans, having said that it is full of character. On arrival I parked my car in the free carpark at the rear of the hotel and made our way downstairs to the reception. There is a small old lift availiable, we favoured the stairs. We were greeted by a friendly receptionist who directed us to a first floor room at the front of the hotel. The room was of ample size with adequate furnishing. The bathroom was small but again adequate.I would advise requesting a room at the rear as road noise was intrusive. The location is ideal for exploring Ullswater. The hotel is a short walk to the waterside and ferry. There are a few shops, pubs and places to dine close to the hotel. In conclusion, I recommend this hotel if you want a pleasant hotel in a beautiful setting at a reasonable price. We offer sympathy to the owners and staff of the hotel and the people of Glenridding in the wake of the flood.

« Lovely hotel...BUT.. Poorly run..receptionist spoke very poor English.... »

Myself and my partner booked this for my birthday month before stay. I specifically asked for Extra large executive room and payed for it...little disappointed on arrival to find a rather small not so executive room...I have travelled far and wide..UK and abroad and..EXECUTIVE ROOMS should be as stated in description....on asking to speak to the manager I came across a young slightly rough looking girl behind reception..poor English..I explained the situation she said she would contact half hour later she tries to get out of the fact they booked us wrong room and offered a £30 refund..didn't really want a pitiful refund from an untrained manager certainly no customer service skills at all...we kept the room and yes had lovely weekend but..Best need some communication skills sorted for all your staff... Inn on the lake..however..100% fantastic spectacular...

    « lovely stay »

always nice going to the lakes, even if it is taking a gamble in november, nice hotel with a great view overlooking the lake, nice lounges and a nice bar to have some food and drink after being out all day, very good base for exploring this part of the lakes

    « Weekend away »

Our first weekend away post baby (he stayed at Grandmas) Beautiful setting which is great for all levels of walkers, Lovely Staff, Clean rooms in same style of the hotel (you don't want modern corporate for a romantic get away) and Gormet Food served by friendly and caring waiters. Finished our meal with Brandy Coffee's by the fire. Perfect first weekend away will definitely return.

    « 100% Good »

Very great experience :) The setting of the hotel was very nice: not too far from the ferry, and right in the heart of a green and beautiful landscape. The staff were friendly and very accommodating! Food from the pub was nice as well, plus the best Guinness I've had in a while!

    « Excellent »

Lovely place to stay. Rooms were clean and well kept! The staff were a credit. I would stay again. The views from the 2 rooms were oh so breathtaking with mountain and lake view. The pool was lovely. Had a pleasant little library too!

    « Faultless! »

Just returned from a two night stay. Beautiful location and an equally stunning hotel. Very quaint, lots of wide staircases, a beautiful restaurant serving high quality food! Staff are very hard working- a true credit to the company. We will return and recommend.

    « Slightly disappointed »

Overrated hotel, nice, but not luxurious or anything spectacular. Needs a refurbish really. Ratchers bar very overrated & food nothing to write home about. Staff in hotel restaurant at breakfast where totally brilliant & nothing was too much trouble though.

    « Lovely stay »

We booked a short stay at the Best Western Glenridding Hotel and loved the whole atmosphere. The hotel is absolutely beautiful and was set up with Christmas decorations, so looked completely magical. The staff here are lovely, they make you fell very welcome and the food was amazing. Our room was spacious and very clean with excellent views. This hotel is one of the most beautiful hotel that we have ever stayed in. We will definetily came back.

« Ideal base for a relaxing break »

We had booked a one-night stay at fairly short-notice, but wished we had been able to make it longer. The staff were friendly and helpful, our room comfortable and well-decorated and the facilities/lighting good. The Hotel has character, is well situated for both relaxing or more strenuous activities and close to shore of Ullswater. The nearby lake "steamers" enable access to a variety of walking routes. Menu offers a good choice of local food or classic dishes - all well-presented and cooked. Our evening meal was delicious!

    « return visit »

me and my wife have just got back from glenridding hotel all I can say is the hotel the staff and the meals first class you could not hope to be in a better hotel our two night stay was spot on meals were first class

    « Lovely Hotel »

We booked a family suite to attend an event and were suitably impressed. The bedroom was a nice size as was the bathroom. The additional room had bunk beds and much to our daughters delight a wall mounted television. The view directly opposite was straight into someone's living room, but a glance to the right and you could see the river and mountains looking quite spectacular. Wifi very good and very useful as struggled with phone signals. The hotel facilities were very good. Swimming pool was small but clean and the changing area was well equipped with lockers, hair dryers and towels provided. Breakfast was lovely a good choice and good service. The staff were generally very friendly and the hotel was very clean and well furnished. Not the cheapest hotel you will find but we felt it was worth the price. We have stayed in other hotels with similar ratings that are nowhere near as nice or comfortable. Loved our stay and would definetly stay again.

« Poor Value and horrible porridge! »

Just back from two night Dinner Bed and Breakfast at the Glenridding. The "executive" room was OK - a bit small for an "executive room" but overall it was poor value for money at £203 per night DB&B. The restaurant serves pretty average food (e.g. lamb with all of its pinkness long gone and very gelatinous pana cota) to very few customers. On Friday there were only one other couple in the restaurant and last night the front half was occupied by a large party and we were all on our own in the lakeside part. The main positive was the waiter who was excellent. At breakfast we only wanted fruit and then porridge but the chef/cook couldn't make it - even using an instant pack which is what it obviously was. The waiters excuse was "he's from Romania" which was a change from "he's from Barcelona" I suppose. The final straw was when I politely asked if we could have a late checkout as we were doing a run that morning and would need to change. This resulted in a flat "no its not our policy" . We'd just spend over £400 with them and they couldn't even offer us somewhere to change! We won't be back.

    « Not recommended! »

My husband and daughter saw this hotel and fell in love. As it was not possible to book a twin room through the booking sites, I rang the hotel direct. Without any difficulty, I was offered a twin room bed and breakfast (£92) or room, bed and breakfast and dinner (£122). This was confirmed by the hotel in an email. Later on, I was contacted by the front of house manager. She was extremely rude, discourteous and abrupt. She changed the booking details, charged me more money and implied that I had lied whilst making the booking. I am not impressed with the customer service given by this hotel or the front of house attitude. As seen in previous reviews and from the way customers were talked to when at the hotel, some in-service training is seriously required.

    « A quick visit »

We stayed for one night on Sunday 1/11/15. The hotel is situated in the heart of beautiful Glenridding. Our room was on the first floor which was handy for the lift down to the hotel pub "Ratchers Tavern". The room was clean with everything you'd expect from a 3 star Best Western. My only negative is that it was a little dated and in need of modernising, I presume the rest of the rooms were the same but will stand corrected. The public rooms are nice as is the restaurant where we enjoyed a very tasty and well cooked full English breakfast. All of the staff were lovely, from check in to check out they couldn't do enough to help. Check in is 3pm but we arrived early at 9am to take a trip on one of the nearby Ullswater Steamers. Although we couldn't check in we were given a pass for the car park. After our cruise we enjoyed a very nice lunch and a few beers in Ratchers whilst we watched the football. The Wi-Fi was free and the connection very good. We didn't use the leisure facilities but did enjoy a very relaxing and pleasant stay at the hotel. We will definitely return.

« Amazing location and amazing staff »

I have to start by praising the beautiful view of Place Fell and Ullswater which we had from our window. The hotel has a pool and sauna which are practically unused so you have them all to yourself. The water is clean but it could be 2-4 degrees warmer (we were told it was 28 degrees celsius). The staff are extremely kind and helpful (particularly the restaurant manager and reception staff). Here it is important to you read this tip: to eat, the hotel has a bar as well as a restaurant. The bar is slightly cheaper but the food is horrible. Don't visit it and don't buy the pizza because it's inedible. If you go to the restaurant for dinner though, you get much larger portions and the food will be remembered for a good while because it's so good. The chicken meal and duck is what we tried and we would recommend both. In terms of the weather, please know that you can go out walking in the rain but you will need waterproof trousers, a fully waterproof jacket (not just water resistant) and waterproof boots. The surroundings are truly stunning with loads of rivers, streams and green valleys. We climbed up Helvellyn which we would recommend but only on a dry day. When we went up, we could hardly see a thing up there due to the clouds and the rocks were extremely slippery due to the rain. The route we took went through Catseye Cam and the Swirral Edge and was very frightening once we were almost at the top because the track seemed to just end and we had to climb over rocks by a cliff face. An easier route goes through Grisdale, Dollywagon Pike and onto Helvellyn. If you want to go walking, an OS map is essential and it would be good to buy one on the internet to not be ripped off in Glenridding. Get an "English Lakes NE Explorer" map which will show you the whole region around. You can then install an OS app on your phone to get this map on your phone. It's useful because you can see your location pinpointed on the map then and the map would get destroyed on a wet day. Either way, coming back to the hotel, the rooms were clean and rather spacious but slightly old fashioned. I didn't like the decor or furniture as well as the carpet (wood or stone flooring would be much better) but perhaps I just don't like things the very traditional way! The floor in our room was slanted but this probably relates to the fact this building was very old. The wifi in the hotel is so slow that a Skype call is asking for too much and there is little other networks you could connect to. You don't get any mobile signal in the whole area (except at the very top of Helvellyn) from any network except Vodafone so you might want to get their sim card if you want to communicate with the outside world during your stay. I hope this is helpful.

    « Great stop-over »

We used this hotel to break a long journey. We could have stayed longer. The receptionist was super helpful when we called to say we would arrive late. We ate in the bar area - which is just like a local pub and had good food. The bed was extremely comfortable and the room absolutely fine for our stay. - we should have packed swimming gear.

« Lovely place to stay, lovely staff. »

I booked this hotel as a surprise for my husband's birthday and he loved it. We only live 40 mins away but the views are still amazing. The restaurant staff were fantastic and friendly with a sense of humour! We loved the Ratchers bar were we watch most of the rugby world cup after a relaxing swim and sauna. Thank you, we would recommend to anyone staying in the area.

    « Great location »

Stayed 2 nights as we were attending a friends wedding at a nearby hotel. Room was clean & quiet. Breakfast was great with good quality food. Haddock & poached egg were excellent. Would definitely stay here again if in the area. Room numbering is a little confusing. Handy shops across the road for anything you have firgotten.

« Pleased we chose it. Not disappointed »

Got an excellent last minute one night stay deal direct from the hotel . Cheaper than all other sites . Everything that needed to be very good was . Food lovely ,cleanliness very good, service ( especially from the cheerful exceedingly overworked head waiter ) was good and very comfy bed , plentiful room supplies and large bath sheets and hot water We really did have a lake view , double aspect ,and NO ridiculous huge supplement for this . Our room was dated but everything worked . It was warm and cosy ,with opening windows . The view of those hills and lakes far outweigh the clean ,but dated decor. There has been refurbishment done in some of the public rooms and overall we felt the atmosphere conducive to us putting it on our list of future stays ,at the right price . Guests were from all age groups. Great leusire pool, along with lovely traditional snooker room, table tennis and use of tennis courts . Drying room if needed . Vibrant popular public bar .Many aspects of good hospitality and customer need prevailed. Only slight negative was Insufficient staff on reception / guest bar early evening and a little chilly in the public rooms in the evening of our stay .We chose to eat in the restaurant , as the bar was very busy due to televised World Cup rugby , but it was rather empty and therefore lacking in atmosphere . However the meal was delicious . I am sure we will return and have no hesitation in recommending to others ,given this balanced review.

    « Don't Forget Your Toothbrush! »

Whatever you do don't forget your toothbrush should you find yourself staying at the Glenridding Hotel! One of the receptionists conjured up a ripped trio pack of Colgate tooth brushes from under the desk, minus one third of it's contents (akin to the slight of hand fashion a magician may deftly slip a handkerchief from his sleeve ? but there the similarity stopped) for this illusionist bewilderingly charged £3 per brush! I had to smile when glancing through the Best Western room literature, there under the subheading of Toiletries to quote ??emergency overnight kits?including toothbrushes are supplied FOC?? I was mystified, but bless, I suppose every penny counts? Plus, contrary to popular belief (and ambiguous wording), if you book through Trip Advisor's ?best price' search, it turns out not to be the best price at all! It's ?rack rate' and that excludes breakfast. The same receptionist was unabashed that a 200% increase on the usual £5 breakfast cost awaits the unsuspecting Trip Advisor traveller. You have to admire the gall of the place, three quid to clean your peggies, and fifteen smackeroonies for a merge breakfast, that on the menu is so boastful it hurts. Best of luck to them, I just hope they're saving every snaffled penny to send the receptionist on a hospitality refresher course sometime soon! Real shame though, the hotel is in a beautiful location and convenient for exploring, but my?what an odd set-up?!

« Good hotel in great location »

Stayed four nights in a lake view room. Nice view of the lake. Room very comfortable with toiletries and hospitality tray with plenty of selection. Breakfast throughout was excellent. Used the pool and sauna three times, excellent facilities. Twice there was only us in and it felt like having our own private pool!!! Lovely and warm too. All staff were always very pleasant and polite and would go the extra mile for you. Would definitely stay at this hotel again

    « 3 days mid week »

There were four of us who stayed at the hotel , we paid for upgraded bedrooms with lake view. The hotel is in need of a general refurbishment but the dining room and food were very good and the staff(mostly eastern european) very friendly and helpful. it was also useful having a pub on the ground floor.

    « walking trip »

this was my first time at this hotel and it wont be our last the staff was all very helpful the food rooms were top notch and the pool was very good as well.i would like to say head waiter john needs a pat on the back .

    « Room with a view »

A very nice relaxing break with a room over looking the fells. Staff efficient room comfortable, we ate in the downstairs restaurant and the food was lovely as was the service. Maybe needs a little updating in some areas.

« Great location, tired accommodation »

Booked on a two night stay with meals included. The room was a bit tired and old, but perfectly clean and a very comfy bed after a long walk up Helvelyn. The meals were standard but okay, restaurant very quiet which made the atmosphere a bit none existent, but it was February so...! There's a nice pub attached to the hotel where the food is good and it seems a popular haunt, very busy and cosy bar. Would stay again but mainly due to the location.

« Views of Ullswater. We had a room with a view. »

We booked a room that had a Lakeside view also with a walk-in-shower.We found the Hotel in a good position to travel to watch a stage of the 2015 Tour of Britain Bike Race.We went to watch at Aira Force9 a couple of miles up the road .The room was good ,clean & a really comfy King size bed.The staff, apart from the one British member, were rather sullen .We did not get a welcome when we arrived nor at breakfast each morning.Food was not too good-- burnt toast & overcooked bacon !
