"Could be so much better"

This hotel could be so successful however It is let down massively. There are so many negatives to be found compared to few positives. Firstly it is virtually impossible to find staff. It is not uncommon to wait for 5-10 minutes at the bar or reception until a member of staff comes and serves you. This appears to be that the owners don't want to increase the wage budget as they always seem short staffed. Secondly the housekeepers appear to have the easiest job despite in most other hotels having one of the hardest. The housekeepers do not replace shampoo/conditioner etc, don't replace all items on the coffee tray and don't necessarily clean dirty cob webs. The worst part is that a cobweb in the Dukes room has a dead spider in. This was not removed for the entire week. The housekeepers also commonly put the same towels back on the rail in the bathroom and do not change the bed just remake it. A personal highlight was being cornered in the corridor one morning and asked by a housekeeper ‘you don't want your room doing do you'. It is difficult to find a good room as most rooms have poor Wi-fi. Multiple rooms have TVs that are broke. Make sure you ask for the king charles or queen victoria as they are by far the nicest rooms and probably cost the same as the bad rooms. In addition the rear garden is open to the public and a regular occurrence is members of the public smoking weed or playing music out the back of the hotel without the hotel doing anything to prevent this. During my stay I found 4-5 Rainbeetles, one or two I can understand however waking up with one on the bed.. not nice. The food is good and the choice is what you would want to find on a bar menu however it seems to depend on which chef is in to the quality that you receive. However one night I ordered 2 plain and simple ham sandwiches and this took the chef 25 minutes to make! Pretty poor. On one day a school prom had hired the function room. As much as I hope they all enjoyed there evening the hotel had zero provision to stop regular hotel guests being affected. No noise limiter meant that music vibrated through rooms and when this was bought up with Tanya (a duty manager) she said she would speak to the DJ however nothing changed. In addition one day when waiting at the bar she ignored me for several minutes whilst she wrote a cheque up and then said she would be back in a second. Several minutes later she hadn't returned from the kitchen and I returned to my room. This seems odd that a duty manager is so unfussed about customer service and taking a customers money whilst they are willing to spend. The only redeeming features of this hotel is the kind middle aged man who I believe is the general manager called Simon, he is often found front of house or behind reception and is always willing to help. Also a male member of staff who I believe is called Stephen is often on reception/bar was also extremely helpful resolving room issues and always friendly. A couple of the staff behind the bar and in the restaurant are also helpful and polite. It is extremely hard to find a room in this hotel where everything is just average.. you will be missing a hairdryer or bath or have no tv/Wi-fi for example. I can almost guarantee you will have some sort of problem not experienced in most other hotels.

"Excellent stays all round."

I have been staying at the hotel for the last 5 weeks and haven't had a single complaint. The rooms are clean, tidy and well presented. The staff are on hand at all times should you need anything and are always happy to help. Linda, Samantha, Simon, Steven, Lesley and Tanya to name a few have all been brilliant, very accommodating, even putting a fan in my room for me due to the heat! Many hotels don't even have a fan for their staff, let alone their guests!! They know the local area so have pointed me in the right direction in the evenings. The service and quality across the hotel and restaurant has been impeccable and I have been made to feel very welcomed. The food is good at breakfast with a choice of hot or cold options and meals in the evening have also been very good. I believe the hotel is suitable for anyone wanting to stay somewhere where they are treated like a friend not just another guest!

"Great Hotel & staff, nice grounds and superb food."

I have been staying at the Bestwood Lodge Hotel for the past six weeks whilst on a training course at the same venue. I have found the welcome from all staff to be first rate at all times, no matter the time of day. Rooms are good, with comfortable beds and a range of teas/coffees etc. The hotel is set in a forest park and I have enjoyed evenings running/walking around the substantial grounds. The buildings themselves have some serious history to them and its interesting to read/listen to information on that. The food is superb, from a full breakfast menu to bar snacks and a full and varied restaurant menu that has something for every taste. I have enjoyed my stay at the hotel and would highly recommend people to stay here if on business, visiting the area or for weddings and other gatherings. 10/10 from me.

If you want to just relax and get away from it all, this is the place for you; especially if you have a dog with you. We had a wonderful break here and will definitely be going back in the future .... I would move in permanently if I could! Set in glorious surroundings with wonderful views as far as the eye can see and just a stones throw from the city of Nottingham. We had a four day break here with our dog Ella and I really cannot fault the place; I would give 10 out of 5 if that were possible. The staff were fantastic, the food delicious, service top notch, a lovely room and they really are dog friendly. It is a beautiful historic building and although there are places where a lick of paint or a bit of work needs doing, it only adds to the charm of the place. There is a lovely area where us dog owners can sit and relax with a glass of wine or dine and you can have with your pet with you; there is also plenty of space outside for al fresco dining. I am really looking forward to our next visit; I just wish we had discovered this gem of a place before.

Extremely shocking to say ive been coming here alot and a regular customer unfortunately my mum has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer and been having to come back and forth from Manchester to here seen as this is the only local hotel for ease to get to my mums if she needs me now i have paid a fortune in this place and all seemed good as i classed it as my second home but unfortunately i got put in to a dingy room with my 5month old daughter and it was absolutely disgusting now this was Tuesday night i was not happy as the quilt was full of yellow stains with hairs all over the bed and the mattress protector was just diabolical i was utterly shocked so i complained and got moved to a different room before i did i spoke to the manager and he said he will speak to house keeping about the state of the bedroom clearly not as ive got put back in the same room tonight and yet again the mattress protector is full of yellow stains with hairs all over i complained yet again for a member of staff to say it shouldn't be as the manager checked it all over clearly not and for me to be stood out side the building for over a hour and a half with my 5 month old daughter on the phone to the complaints department as i waited for a new mattress protector is just disgusting so please everyone check the beds before you sleep in them i have had this in the past where my bedding has not been changed for 4-5 nights that in its self is just unhygienic that should not be allowed in any hotel especially when your paying the odds for a room what are just awful dingy and damn right dirty they certainly do need a whole new cleaning team or need to be trained up just for the basic cleaning let alone a good clean now we had no apology what so ever tonight we just felt like we got ignored and felt very un welcome after we complained so just beware folks if you do complain as it seems the staff do not like it well tough i don't like paying good money to sleep in a dirty room surely the manager and staff must see the state of the rooms would they pay the odds at a hotel to sleep in one of there rooms i think not....i could go on and on about the past couple of days but unfortunately im tired due to lack of sleep with all the stress so i will peace it at that so if you do want a nice relaxing night bestwood lodge isn't the hotel for you end of.

Thank you for your review. I am sorry to read your review following your most recent stay. We are disappointed that although we went to every effort to make your stay a pleasant one, you chose to be unsatisfied unless we upgraded your room. Over the few weeks you have stayed with us, we have made every effort to make your stay pleasant, by upgrading you to Superior King rooms, Luxury Kings & even one of our Suites. We have always made you feel welcome at the hotel, and gone the extra mile during your stays with us, as we built up a good relationship and empathized with your current situation. We also allowed you to store your pushchair in a function room, rather than carrying up and down stairs, we held onto belongings here for you until you next return (usually a day or two later), where possible we have upgraded your room, by several tiers, allowing you extra space, at no additional cost and have even catered for you after/outside food service times. We genuinely feel that your multiple stays with us, whereby we have been in a position to upgrade you and provide you with more spacious rooms, have been tarnished by the fact that on this occasion, due to us being full, we couldn't offer an upgrade. I am disappointed of your findings and apologized profoundly for any errors made by our housekeeping team, as did other managers on duty, however we feel that any errors made were rectified, above and beyond, during your stay, so much so, you were due to stay in the hotel's Bridal Suite for two nights, however you chose to check out after one of these nights. All feedback is important to us and we will work with all our guests to ensure they have a stay which is a pleasant one.

"Wedding Venue"

We had our wedding ceremony, breakfast and evening function here and could not fault it - would give more than 5 stars. Function team help you with all the details and take pressure off you to help the big day go smoothly - along with each and every member of staff. Big thank you to Jodie, Simon but just too many to mention. You were all fabulous and we thank you so much. The ceremony went off without a hitch then came the fabulous food for out breakfast - recommend every course, red pepper soup, 12 hour braised beef which melts on the tonge and a light pannacotta to finish. The evening went with a great DJ keeping the guests dancing with a lovely buffet to finish the event. We have no hesitation in recommending Bestwood Lodge for a wedding venue - simply beautiful add the team they have there and it becomes exemplary. Thank you

"Disappointing"

I stayed here for work, so had no choice but to accept it. I would not chose to stay here in the future. Which is a shame as it has so much potential!! Positives: The hotel is set in beautiful surroundings and from the outside looks stunning. Most of the staff were helpful and polite. Food from the day/evening menu was nice. Negatives: The entire hotel needs a good clean. My room was dusty and had cobwebs. Cooked breakfast was cold, although when the pastries were available, they were extremely nice. There is no lift, although my case was taken to my room. On leaving a male member of staff watched me carrying my suitcase down the stairs. I believe this hotel is kept going with guests on business trips and people using the conference rooms for private functions. At £85 a night there is certainly a lot better places to stay!!!

Thank you for taking the time to leave feedback following your recent stay with us. I am delighted to hear that our staff were helpful and polite, and that you enjoyed the food during your stay. I am, however, disappointed to hear that you felt the cleanliness of the hotel was unsatisfactory. In regards to your photographs and comments, I have passed these onto the Head Housekeeper who apologizes for this and has assured me that this will be looked into. Thank you, once again for taking the time to leave a review following your stay

"Friendly but some way to go"

06/07/2018

Stayed here for just one night and got put in a room up a lot of stairs without a lift, hard with luggage. Breakfast was very average but the bar food good. The hotel is set in some lovely gardens, but is quite a way from shops, cafes or pubs.

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback and for choosing to stay with us at Bestwood Lodge. I have passed on your comments to our Kitchen Team regarding the food offering during your stay. With us being an old Victorian building, and with specific architectural features, we are unable to have a lift in the building, however do have a stair lift to gain access to the first floor. Our team are always happy to help with luggage should you have wished. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed our location, set in our Country Park.

"Nice bit tired hotel"

01/07/2018

We stayed for a family wedding . The building is gorgeous but it is looking bit tired and needs a good clean. Especially outside ..... fag buts everywhere looks bit tatty on terraces . Room was basic but clean . Beds comfy. Staff all very friendly. With a bit of money spent sprucing it up would be a lovely place .

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay with us. Please pass our congratulations again the couple who chose Bestwood Lodge as their wedding venue. I have taken all your comments on board and can assure you that these will be addressed in the correct way. We are currently looking at areas we need to invest in and future guests will see improvements in the not so distant future. Thank you again for your feedback

"I need of updating"

2
25/06/2018

Looking at the website I do not recognise any of the bedrooms as they look a great deal bigger and better decorated than the room my husband and I occupied. I don't think our room had seen a paint brush for 20 years, or had a new carpet or curtains. The inside and outside of this hotel requires repair and updating, it also needs a good clean in all public areas, lots of dust on window sills and along all the wood panelling. The exterior is also in a very bad state. If some investment is not forthcoming soon the whole place will fall apart, despite its charm. The bedding and bathroom were clean, although despite leaving our used towels in the shower tray (usually indicating a change required) the towels were not changed throughout our stay. It was a very hot weekend and therefore morning and pre dinner showers were taken. The towels that had been placed in the shower tray were drapped over the bathroom door by the housekeeper, the towels were unwashed and damp when we returned to our room in the evening. Also despite removing a pillow slip due to a slight nose bleed the same pillow slip was put back on the pillow the following day. I can imagine a response to this would be we should have phoned reception and asked for the pillow slip and towels to be changed, however a guest should not have to do this, it is basic housekeeping. The staff we came into contact with were more than helpful, very friendly and pleasant, the quality and variety of meals on offer were very good indeed. When we checked out no one asked if we had enjoyed our stay and was everything alright ....!

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review following your stay with us. I am disappointed that we didn't meet your expectations or exceed them. I have met with Housekeeping and informed them of your findings, therefore will personally ensure they get dealt with for future guests. We are currently working through the hotel, highlighting areas in need of repair, and therefore improvements are being made periodically - however apologies that you felt certain areas weren't up to the standard we'd like to provide. I have spoken, also, with the Reception Team who should ask how your stay was, however I am slightly disappointed that you didn't mention anything during your stay or also on check out, as we would have been able to rectify this for you, rather than being in a position whereby we are unable to satisfy you further. I thank you again leaving your feedback and we will use this to enhance the guest experience for future guests.

"Could not do enough to help"

19/06/2018

We attended our niece wedding last weekend, hubby disabled, the staff were brilliant, could not do enough to help, carried our case and wheelchair upstairs, made sure hubby could use the chair lift, upgraded our room at no extra cost so that hubby did not have far to walk. Room and all facilities were spotless, the staff could not do enough to help the reception flow with ease, would highly recommend, and will certainly stay again.

My second visit here and i was not disappointed. Staff very welcoming and was upgraded to a fantastic suite with a balcony and four poster bed! As it was a lovely evening I ordered a bar meal and ate outside. Very peaceful surroundings overlooking the parkland. As I was on business i made use of the small work area in my suite with the balcony as a backdrop. Breakfast fresh and plentiful. The hotel would benefit from some updating as long as the character was maintained. All staff were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble!

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am really pleased to hear that you enjoyed your first stay and chose to stay with us again! I am happy to hear that our team continue to provide great service and your welcome at the hotel was a good one. It is great to hear that you was upgraded to one of our suites...the King James room with balcony over our stunning rose garden, and bedroom with four poster is a great way to spend the night in a former royal hunting lodge. I have informed chef that you enjoyed the breakfast. Thank you again for your review and we hope to welcome you back again soon!

"Relaxing Atmosphere"

12/06/2018

My husband and I stayed here for a nights break. We were welcomed warmly by the staff and nothing was too much trouble. We took a walk around the gardens and a member of staff, Tanya, advised us of a nice walk to take. We then arrived back and booked in for our evening meal in the parkside restaurant. The meal was excellent and the service was great, Stephen made it particularly special and also advised us on the best wine to go with our meal. A good nights sleep was had and breakfast was a nice way to end our stay. I would recommend this lovely hotel to everyone.

We visited, as a family, for Sunday lunch and it was brilliant - we were that full from the Carvery that we didn't manage a dessert...really fancied the sticky toffee pudding too. The only thing it lacked was atmosphere, there was us and another table. The staff were brilliant, food was tasty and the building is simply stunning.

This is another old country house taken over by a hotel chain. And again the bare minimum of money has been spent to maintain it. You can tell it's not been renovated since the mid-80s. Dirty carpets and walls and radiators removed and duct tap placed over the pipes. This is the first hotel where my bum touches the sink whilst standing to pee in the toilet. The bathroom is about 8ft by 4ft. The pillows are rock solid, but the bed is comfy. The wifi is very poor. If you are staying for business i would avoid. The staff are excellent and very helpful. The bar food was good and portions are big, so miss out on the starters.

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback following your stay. I have fed back the information and your comments to our team during our Management meeting, so we can improve this for future guests. We are currently, working through areas of the hotel and updating bedrooms & public areas to meet the needs of our guests and to also improve the experience. I am, however, pleased to hear that our staff are excellent - we are very privileged to have such a great team of people. I have informed chef that you enjoyed the bar menu and he is pleased that you enjoyed the meal & portion sizes. Your feedback is valuable to us, and assists us with improving the experience for yourself and future guests.

03/06/2018

Hotel is remote up a long lane so is quiet Bedroom was comfortable. Breakfast was acceptable and as quiet was served at the table instead of a buffet. Dinner was good on the night we had it. Had to call reception as soon as we arrived in the room as we couldn't get the basin tap to work and the lever was loose. It apparently needed two hands to operate. It really needs replacing. Also on the last morning there was no hot water at all so couldn't take a shower. Reported this on the way to breakfast and was offered the use of an empty adjoining room if it couldn't be fixed. Housekeeping sorted it by the time we finished breakfast. As dogs are allowed there was a trail of dog hair, grass and muddy prints on the main staircase when we returned to the bedroom after breakfast. It was cleaned up during the day

Thank you for your review and for describing us as a 'good' hotel. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed our peaceful location & comfortable bedroom - we love our country park setting and glad you did too. I am also happy to hear that you enjoyed your dinner in our Restaurant. I am sorry you had an issue with the tap in the bathroom, however I am happy that our team were able to assist with this - following your check out/departure we have asked our maintenance man to look at this. I am also sorry that there was a trail of dog hair, grass and muddy prints on our main staircase from a previous guests - however I am delighted to hear that our team were quick to act on this. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience on TripAdvisor - we really appreciate your feedback.

"Lovely Night Away"

My partner and I booked a room here just as a night away and we loved it. We were made to feel very welcome from the moment we walked in to the moment we left. The hotel is very beautiful and characteristic with gorgeous surrounding gardens for a nice stroll. We saw one of their murder mystery weekends advertised and we are hoping to attend. We would both recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in a quirky gorgeous setting with a pleasant relaxed atmosphere.

I am grateful for your kind words and comments regarding all aspects of your stay and look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

We recently held our daughters wedding reception in this beautiful hotel, we and many of our guests stayed over night , all of the staff were very friendly and helpful and I can't thank them enough. The food was delicious and the service impeccable, the beautiful surroundings and relaxed atmosphere were perfect. Jodie the events manager did a great job in helping us with the planning and Steven was a great MC and helped to make everything run smoothly . So a massive thank you goes out to everyone involved. Thank you all so much

27/05/2018

Outside of the building is beaitiful but unfortunately the family room is disgusting. I'm only allowed to add 10 photos but I have at least 30. The stains on the bed sheets were awful. Pubic hairs on the bathroom floor, on the beds (all beds) thick black mould on the windows. Blood, poo and urine stains all over the sheets also. Room stinks. Wallpaper ripping off walls. Double bed has two broken legs and the springs have gone on the right hand side. The camp bed for our 3rd child is missing slats so my daughter couldn't sleep on it. We left after finding another hotel close by. Just to add we also tried to have lunch here today and were told there wasn't enough food for us even though we were going to be staying there for 3 days! Will not go back again. Disgusting!

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and I am sorry that we didn't meet your expectations. Having looked in to your feedback, it would appear that you were mistakenly checked-in to a room that was not yet serviced. I understand that the duty manager did offer another room, however you declined as you had already made alternative arrangements. I can only apologise for this error that prevented you from staying with us, we take all feedback very seriously and are saddened that we did not get the opportunity to show you our high levels of service. Regarding lunch, it is unfortunate that we had run out of roast beef when you arrived. I understand that Tanya, our Duty Manager did let you know what other roast meats were available and also offered you the bar menu. Thank you, again for taking the time to review us on TripAdvisor to share your experience - we will use these comments to better our offering to our guests in the future.

We held our wedding reception in this beautiful Grade II listed building. Both the hotel and staff were amazing and it's positioned in a lovely setting. The staff were so helpful and friendly, we couldn't praise them more. The meal at the reception was exceptional and the evening buffet was very well recieved by all!! All of our guests really enjoyed their stay and were happy with the accommodation. The breakfast buffet was delicious and regularly top up. We will definitely be back. Personal thanks to Jodie and Stephen.

This Hotel could be great , set on a wonderful site shame about the bedroom decor. Had not seen an advocado bathroom suite for years . Rooms really dated with tile grouting needed doing in bathroom, apart from the comfortable king size bed the room was awful needed totally bringing into 21st century. It's such a shame as setting and buildings are great.

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for choosing to stay with us. We are currently going through a upgrading programme, whereby our bedrooms are being invested in, therefore apologies for the bedroom decor & bathroom being outdated. I am however pleased that the King sized bed was comfortable.

Firstly just wanted to say this hotel could be beautiful with a make over and a better trained cleaning team. Stayed with my family and partner hoping for a romantic weekend break unfortunately was far from that. Checked in late as wed been at a wedding staff were efficiant. First issue no bottled water or glasses in our room so my partner when to buy a bottled water to be told they dont have any. Shower in the bathroom was covered in black mould no way we were having a shower there Wallpaper falling off the walls, wardrobe not attatched from wall my other hald grabed it to stop it falling on me when i opened the door, there was an extension lead side of bed as lack of plugs last pat tested 2014!! Bedding was dirty and ripped had mascara mark on same location on pillow and duvet not likely this was coincidental. All down side of mattress was dust and pubic hairs! No soap but there was a bubble bath though no bath which was half filled with water! And to top it off my partner is covered in suspected flee bites Breakfast was awful pots with heat lamps dried out beans and eggs. I might suggest as was only a few tables for breakfast and was a small buffet that cooking to order would be a better idea. Please improve the building as has massive potential

We had the most fantastic time attending a 'Murder Mystery three-course dinner event' hosted in Bestwood Lodge's ballroom (performed by Stirling Academy) - the biggest thank you everyone involved with putting on this wonderfully engaging evening! Everyone felt included and were put as ease to get stuck into the plot :) The Best Western team organised and delivered the evening flawlessly, with guests meeting in the ornate main bar area for drinks before being escorted into the ballroom to our designated tables. The actors joined us as guests on each table and circulated the room to keep content fresh while we enjoyed a gorgeous three-course meal presented in a timely fashion by polite staff. Adored the warm rolls and it was the best sticky toffee pudding I've had in years! The Operations Manager Stephen particularly stood out as he made each guest feel personally welcome, checked on our wellbeing without being overbearing and graciously accommodated our last minute dietary requests without any fuss. His team are visibly passionate about their work at the hotel, which made everyone feel at home during the evening. Even after the event, Stephen and the acting company stuck around to chat with guests which added a personal extra touch. Love this place! Whatever the season, would strongly advise a wander around the pretty nearby woodland walks before stopping at the Lodge for a lovely pot of tea and biscuits :) As locals we've never stayed overnight, but it's one of our favourite weekend jaunts! Thanks again to the team for a really great evening! Rachel and Adam

"Delightful and peaceful stay"

Historic grade 2 listed building in a peaceful wooded setting but easily accessible from Nottingham and Hucknall. Also not too far from the M1 motorway so a good overnight stay when travelling. Ours was a spacious and very well equipped room on the first floor overlooking the gardens and the spectacular bar area. The breakfast and evening meal were both excellent and good value.Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and Simon was especially helpful. As we have family and friends in the area, this will be our automatic choice of hotel when visiting the area,. We will be back.

The hotel is in a pretty setting but run down. The rooms are extremely dated - ours had a very 70s looking grey plastic bathroom suite. The windows are ill fitting and draughty. Breakfast was advertised as hot and continental buffets. Neither was available. Hot food was cooked to order and it was fine, if limited and slow to arrive. The only other options were cereal, toast or yoghurt. No muffins, croissants, pastries. Not even any marmalade!

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for giving us your feedback following your recent stay with us. We are currently updating our bedrooms - therefore I apologise if you had one of our older rooms. Our breakfast offering is a hot & cold buffet, dependent on the number of rooms occupied, therefore I assume you stayed on a quieter night. When this is the case, we offer a 'cooked to order' breakfast, therefore I am disappointed to hear that you were unsatisfied with the ordered food. Many of our guests prefer our 'cooked t order' breakfast, however both myself & our kitchen team are looking at ways to improve the offering going forward. Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback

"Old building but lovely staff"

I stayed here over the Easter weekend visit family who have just moved to the area. We found the hotel thought trip advisor and local recommendation. Getting to the hotel is a bit of a nightmare but use your sat nav and it is easy to get to just mind the speed humps. It is a lovely old building with the problems you expected from a old building. The heating was on full blast to keep it warm and it did a good job. Due to age of the building the WiFi can be a problem but if you connect to it the passage way you then stay connected in your room. The food was great and delicious. Nothing was to much for the staff. I look forward to my next visit

We had our wedding at Bestwood Lodge recently. We got married in the chapel and had our reception here as well. Right from the start nothing was too much trouble. We would especially like to mention Tanya as she looked after us starting the day before. Every little extra we needed Tanya sorted with no fuss which helped to make our day so special. We stayed in the honeymoon suite which was excellent. Wedding food was amazing and everyone enjoyed their meal. Can't recommend Bestwood Lodge enough. Sharon and Dave

"Could be better"

We stayed here as we were working in Nottingham. On arrival, the receptionist was extremely friendly and helpful so top marks for your staff there! We only needed one night's accommodation and were given the 'Viscount' suite - a very large room with two single beds and a double bed, with a huge bathroom. The room itself could do with redecorating. It's very dated and it did have a slightly odd smell to it. However, the bed was clean and comfortable. The main problem was the noise. The room opens straight out onto a balcony which is just above (and open to) the bar area, so it was a little like trying to get to sleep in the bar! There was also an adjoining door to the next room which was sealed, but we could hear literally every word of the conversation going on in the next room through the door. Top tip: bring ear plugs! In the morning, I showered quite early and managed to get a decent shower without any trouble, but an hour or so later when my husband used it, the water pressure was non existent and he had to try and wash under a dribble. We didn't have breakfast or any other food in the hotel, but my husband was disappointed with the quality of the half pint of Guinness he ordered as a nightcap. Overall, the building and grounds are really pretty but the interior does need some major work and the hotel needs to do something about the noise.

"Carvery lunch Easter Sunday"

4
08/04/2018

We have eaten carvery's before here, mainly Boxing Day, and thought this carvery was slightly better than previous visits, but not by much. The food was cooked very well with several vegetable dishes on offer and 3 meats. We were looked after very well and whilst staff were not in full attendance they were aware when courses were finished and they could clear away ready for the next course. The dining room is very large with high ceilings which may give an illusion of too much space and the room was not full but was very comfortable in superb, historic surroundings which adds to the ambience.

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review following your visit on Easter Sunday. I am pleased to hear that our carvery has been consistently good, with Easter Sunday being slightly better too. My wife and I arrived Friday for a night as we were going out in Nottingham. The Hotel is about 6 miles from the town centre £12 taxi ride. The place is lovely n historic in a good way . Very charming. Lovely bar area and very helpful staff. We had room 30 which was up a couple of flights of stairs n a bit of a trek but the room was very clean, comfy bed and a bath. There was no lift but a stair lift was available. The Hotel is right next to a country park which was good. The Hotel was also dog friendly.

"Sunday Lunch - Easter Sunday"

2
03/04/2018

Lovely building, very impressive. Lunch served in large restaurant room which was a little chilly and scant tables made it look empty and with very few diners. Menu choice was tiny with very little choice but we opted for a carvery lunch which was very well cooked and very nice. Service (excepting the chef who served carvery) was not very good at all unfortunately, you didn't feel very looked after having to ask for a menu and not exactly a warm cosseting welcome. Was pleasant enough but not exactly special at all which is such a shame given the lovely surroundings. It could have been so much better. I wouldn't go back.

GeneralManager17, Manager at Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for informing us of your recent visit to the hotel. I am disappointed to hear that we didn't meet your expectations at the Sunday Carvery on Easter Sunday; and that you found the 3 choices of starter, carvery option with 3 choices of meat, wide selection of vegetables, potatoes, gravy, Yorkshire Pudding, along with a fish & vegetarian options also available, followed by 3 dessert choices to be be insufficient. I have spoken with the extended team regarding the service and can only apologies that, you feel, we didn't 'go the extra mile' for you on this occasion. I am confident that this was an isolated incident and can only invite you to try us again. I am, however, delighted to hear that you enjoyed our beautiful building and surroundings.

"Excellent Visit"

03/04/2018

We have just returned from 3 nights here. The customer service was excellent and I would like to mention Samantha in particular. When we arrived there was no handle on the wardrobe. I called down to reception and she came straight up with a key card for another room and we just moved our bags. Previous reviewers had warned about the quirky showers, in that it could take a few minutes for hot water to come through, so we turned the shower on just before we wanted to use it and there were no issues. Previous reviewers had also commented on the temperature in the bar, but we found it to be very comfortable for us. We had dinner in the restaurant with our family on the Saturday evening and the food was delicious. Service was very good. All the staff we spoke to were very friendly and helpful. Our room was very comfortable and we both slept well. The television had a good selection of programs and the remote control worked! We also had a full length mirror, which so many hotel rooms do not have. The building itself is wonderful and the history of the building is explained in the folder in the room. Breakfast was delicious and on 2 of our mornings, as there were only a few guests staying, it was cooked to order. We have already booked for our next stay.

Big old Gothic pile. Amazingly warm though, which was nice considering the height of the ceiling in the lovely lounge bar. We stayed there all evening, just ordered a bottle of wine and a couple of starters instead of a main meal and sat in the lounge/bar to relax, eat and enjoy the relaxed, quiet ambience. Quiet background music was pleasant too - not at all intrusive. Your satnav may tell you that you've arrived whilst you are still in the middle of a housing estate, don't lose heart, just carry on to the end of the road and follow your nose up through a wooded area with road humps to slow you down and you'll see Best Western signposted.,

Great friendly service from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. The room was huge and had everything you need. The shower pressure was so lovely you didn't want to get out! The breakfast we paid extra for on the morning of the departure and again it was lovely with friendly service. You don't appreciate the views when you arrive at dark but what a lovely place. "One night "

05/03/2018

We came to Nottingham to see Paloma Faith at the Motorpoint Arena. I booked the Bestwood Lodge last minute as we decided not to drive back and have a night away instead. We found the hotel fine, following satnav. Driving up towards the building was a bit of a nightmare in the dark as the speed bumps weren't easy to see. The paint had worn off. On our arrival we were greeted by a friendly receptionist and directed to our room. We were very impressed with the bar area and the balcony overlooking it. We found our room to be quite dusty... especially the curtain pelmit, which needed some attention. The bed was firm and comfortable though I found your pillows too hard. I like to sleep with 2 pillows as one is too low, but 2 of yours was too high. The bathroom was clean but absolutely Baltic in there. No heating whatsoever! You could see the breath coming out of our mouths. Might I suggest you invest in a heated towel rail? The bedroom itself wasn't very warm either but we coped. We enquired about a late check out and was told it would be £10 for an extra hour so we decided not to bother. I'm glad we didn't.... at 9.15am the cleaner walked straight into our room whilst we were asleep. She apologised and left. Then for the next hour we were subjected to a very loud man chatting to her... I think he was also a cleaner as they were shouting to each other what each room needed..... obviously not dusting as it seems to be an issue on a few of your reviews! I am so glad we didn't pay for the late check out as to have more rest was impossible. We got up, ran the shower for 15 minutes (as it said the hot water took a while to come through) it wasn't a pleasant experience getting ready in that cold room! Would stay again (probably in a warmer month!) as it was very reasonably priced and in a beautiful location... but please tell your cleaners to shut up. We don't need their life stories!

"Wedding Reception & general visits"

04/03/2018

We live near this lodge so often pop by when we go for walks in the woods near it and around the country park. It's set in lovely surroundings. I'll break it into categories. Wedding Reception: We know nothing about the costs as the in laws kindly paid it so I will just review the reception. The reception was excellent, it really completed my wedding day. The food was alright, not spectacular but the buffet was really good. They allowed us to decorate the room the day before and they kindly put all our stuff in one place when they cleaned the room afterwards which made it easy to take home. Drink prices were alright, not overly expensive like hotels usually. We got a free overnight stay in a room, the room was lovely, about 4am it got a little cold though, as in we woke up quite cold but other than that I was completely happy. General visits: Usually every time we visit the food/ drinks are alright prices and the lodge itself is always a pleasure to visit. The Staff: Overall the staff are great. I would like to particularly rate a lady called Tanya. She is excellent and a credit to you all. She remembered us from our wedding reception which is great for how many people she would see. She was excellent at our wedding reception too, always checking things were okay and asking if there's anything else we wanted. Hopefully this review gets back to her because she does a great job for you guys. Overall it's a lovely place that I will continue to visit.

"worst two nights in a hotel"

04/03/2018

Our room was freezing cold on arrival, with NO heating in the bathroom, the two small windows were too high to see out of, the décor is old fashioned and damaged, worn out. Fine dining it states in the brochure, we tried both the bar and restaurant, the food was badly prepared, cooked and presented, my wife could not eat her evening meal in the restaurant, it was sent back to the kitchen. Although we borrowed a heater for our room, the bar area was so cold we retired to our room early. we feel that we were perhaps punished for bringing our pet with us . our stays at other best western hotels have all been very satisfactory, this hotel is letting down the brand of best western hotels. we will be telling all our friend and family of our experience.

"30th birthday"

03/03/2018

Stayed here for my sisters 30th birthday, I rang before hand to see if anything could be done for this they had a few ideas but to pricey for what it was so I asked for a ice bucket in the room. the drive up to the hotel was lovely with the country park surrounding. At checking the lady was lovely, we went into our room number 1 and was disappointed very very dusty I'm not talking a little I picked up the guest book for all the dust to fall off I then sat on the bed in black trousers stand up covered! It was everywhere the room also was under some very noises stairs so we went down to let the receptionist know she came up and looked and said she would move us right away. We then moved rooms new one was fine big high ceilings lovely. The bar looks fabulous really in time with the building. A bit disappointing that the afternoon tea that was on the bar menu had to be pre ordered not that it says that on the menu the food we did have tho was lovely x

"Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel"

06/02/2018

Arriving late in the evening, this isn't the easiest place to find. Its a beautiful period building with bags of character and history. Our room (a family room) was spacious and yet still cosy, if a little bit dated, but we weren't disappointed as it felt in keeping with the hotel. The hot water in the bathroom, due to the age of the building, was very slow, which ultimately meant that the shower took so long for the warm water to get going we had to skip it - a little frustrating, but we were at least warned about it by stickers in the bathroom. The breakfast was delicious - warm, tasty and plentiful. The lady running the hotel (waitressing, receptionist - she seemed to do everything), was very pleasant knowledgeable about the history of the building and really could not do enough for us. We spent the day (Sunday) relaxing by the fire in the bar area, a lovely thing to do on a crisp, cold January day, so when the amazing smells reached us, around lunchtime, from the buffet in the dining room, we were compelled to enquire as to whether we could have lunch - nothing was too much trouble and it was organised for us immediately and wow! were we glad we did - the roast carvery was simply divine and excellent value for money. Would stay at this hotel again, if nothing else for the food alone!

"Take your own pillow! (and possibly ear plugs)"

2
04/02/2018

Two nights in this Best Western hotel - a chain that I always associate with reasonable value (ie relatively inexpensive) but average standards at best. The hotels often seem tired. Bestwood Lodge Hotel was no different. The bedroom (Alexandra) was chilly, and the bar room/lounge decidedly cold, despite a log fire. Not surprising for end of January and a room at least three storeys high plus glass atrium on top, but there weren't many radiators in evidence. The bedroom was clean and appeared freshly decorated, and the bed was very large and comfortable, but the pillows were the worst I have ever encountered in many hotel stays: like resting my head on a doorstep - thick and solid. After waking up the first morning because of jaw ache (!) I asked for softer and thinner pillows, but the replacements (brought with less than 100% good grace) were just the same. I woke up with jaw ache the second morning too. The quilt was the usual way-too-thick mega-tog hotel room offering but at least there was a blanket in the wardrobe (other chains please take note) and used with just the quilt cover this provided the desired amount of warmth. The food was pretty good and reasonably priced but drinks were way too pricey. Not sure about the cost of alcohol but £4.20 for a pint of lemonade and lime (£3.20 for the lemonade and £1 for the shot of lime) was way over what is reasonable. So didn't have breakfast there (£9.50) and went to Sainsbury's in Arnold instead. The WiFi should have worked in the room but didn't (wasn't working on the corridor, and hadn't been for 3 nights at least by the time I left, according to the receptionist). Why the ear plugs? Night 1 I was woken repeatedly by noise from the room next door's TV (left on all night), noise only exceeded by the snoring of the occupant, who obviously wasn't similarly disturbed. Night 2 I spent an unhappy 90 minutes plus kept awake by a throbbing/pulsing generator. The hotel is an old building and my room was single-glazed. I accept that I'm a light sleeper but I had asked for a quiet room...

Nice place, and very clean. A few minor points need attention. On the night I was there the food was not great, a real pity as the menu looked very appealing . Breakfast also a disappointment , should be served from7.00 but at that time only overcooked sausages and hash browns available. Toaster not even plugged in.

"Loved it from the outside"

23/01/2018

We arrived at Bestwood Lodge by chance after a very long flight and were overly impressed by its splendour from the outside. We parked up and went inside to enquire about availability of a triple room for one night. The young lady on reception was helpful and booked us in. We were travelling with a lot of luggage as were touring for 6 weeks and she advised there were no lifts in the building. She offered to help us take our bags to our room, which we declined. Little did we realise our room was probably the further-est from reception, which included flights of narrow stairs and doing laps of the building . It actually ended up having us in hysterics as it was like something from a comedy sketch. The room itself was nothing special. It was clean and had what we needed so it served its purpose. There was both a double and a single bed. Tea and coffee making facilities and bottled water were provided . The bathroom was smallish but it did the job. The shower cubicle was a little on the small size though. Once in our room all we wanted was a nice hot shower. That took a while to accomplish as it took around 10 minutes for the hot water to actually start flowing! We also found the heating was pretty much nonexistent during the night. The inside of the hotel would have been lovely in its heyday but sadly now it just looks tired and old in parts. The breakfast was served in a dining room downstairs. The food was ok. Nothing flash, but it was enough to get us started for the day. The staff did their job but were not overly friendly or welcoming. Before we left in the morning we had a wander of the grounds and really enjoyed that. It really is a beautiful old building that hopefully one day can reclaim some of its glory.

"Weekend with Dog"

2
14/01/2018

Dog friendly but only in bedroom and one cold reception room near front door. Good service from restaurant and reception and a table made available in the small dogs allowed room so she could be with us whilst we ate. Food cost extra to room charge and was neither good nor value for money but due to distance away from available public transport or other food establishments there is no easy alternative. Coffee served almost cold. Taxi to Nottingham £15, The dog loved the gardens but like the building they are tired and being given minimum attention. There is no atmosphere, no entertainment, no background music, no potential outdoor pursuits such as archery which would be in tone with the history of the area, no mention of the history of Bestwood other than the room names, no warmth coming from a beautiful fireplace in the bar. Bedroom needed to be redecorated wall paper curling off, mould on bath non slip mat, light bulb missing in bathroom over the washbasin, I understand that hotel staff do their best for their guests and do not like to complain but on this occasion, would I say I would stay there again. NO Nottingham city is not dog friendly. OAPs are charged to travel on the trams and dogs are NOT ALLOWED to travel on the trams.

Another enjoyable stay. Super friendly staff, nothing is too much trouble. I can highly recommend the breakfasts in the lovely dining room overlooking the grounds. Comfy beds, clean. I've been staying here for years – what's not to love.

My sister had her wedding here December 2017. The function itself was excellent, but overall the standard at the hotel was poor. My original booking (made 22 months earlier !!), was lost. Thank god I had the foresight to phone and check the week before the wedding, and rooms were still available. Approximately 45 of us were staying at the hotel on the night of the wedding, on a bed and breakfast basis. So why on earth was there not enough food for us all to have breakfast ?? There's no excuse ... you know how many people are booked in !! It was embarrassing for everyone. Completely unprofessional and appalling. I certainly would not recommend this hotel. Such a shame, as it's a beautiful place.

"Just a total shambles..."

23/12/2017

Such an amazing building of such great architectural importance but it STOPS there... this is a disappointing experience. We arrived, waited 15 minutes for service for a drink. Asked for a quiet room, which turned out to be over the kitchen complete with emptying of many glass bottle bins. There were no sparkling wines whatsoever, available, the bar staff did not appear to know what sparkling wine was... Reme Martin was also only available for one person as none was left...on retiring to our bedroom, room service could only provide a sandwich after 11 pm, apparently it's too difficult to cut up one of their pork pies! For that you have to wait for a chef in the morning...

"Cold and shabby"

2
13/12/2017

Room had very poor heating, ended up with an electric heater, the entire hotel was cold, had dinner in the bar area and food was cold by the time I had finished my meal, same for breakfast. Run down and in need of renovation.

"Beautiful hotel and grounds, pokey little rooms"

2
08/12/2017

This glorious hotel with wood panelled lounge and bar, galleried landings and picturesque grounds overlooking Nottingham in the distance is ruined by pokey little rooms. Our (smallest size you could get away with) double bed was shoe-horned into the room leaving only 6" between bed and wall. Not even room for a bedside table. The two of us had to choreograph our movements around the room so we didn't fall over each other. Room 24 (our room) is classed as, and charged as, a double room. I'm sorry but this is in reality a small SINGLE room. A lovely hotel to visit or dine in, but ghastly rooms. Even the bathroom hasn't got room for a bath. You get a small (albeit recently renewed) shower cubicle. Oh, and watch out for the smoke detectors - the 10 second interval flashing LED lights have the intensity of a disco strobe light in the dead of night.

"Awful"

1
08/12/2017

Left standing around upon checking in, dangerous 1st floor banister (low level height) landing poorly lite and unsafe. Extremely poor room decoration and uncomfortable beds which also didn't smell fresh

"A lovely building full of original charachter"

4
05/12/2017

This is a very old building, that is steeped in history and the bar area in particular is full or original character. Staff were all pleasant and we received great service throughout our stay. Bedrooms are not huge and were a little chilly, but there is little doubt that it would be near impossible to update the heating system, without removing so many of the hotels original features. There is a sign in the bathroom advising that due to the Victorian plumbing system that the hotel works off, there may be a delay in hot water reaching the room. We did not find this to be the case at all, and always had plenty of hot water. If you are not looking for a clinical, chain establishment, but like a hotel that has great original features and maybe in need of a little tlc due to it's age, you won't go wrong at Bestwood. We only paid £60 for a room on a Saturday night, which is great value for money.

"Not the relaxing retreat we'd hoped for"

26/11/2017

Bestwood Lodge has the wow factor from the outside and as you walk into the main lounge bar area with it's huge fireplace but that's where it stops I'm afraid. The rooms were basic and looked a little shabby to be fair. We had travelled from Cheshire through the snow to meet up with other members of our family (9 of us in total) to celebrate two birthdays and sample Nottingham's Christmas markets which we did and had a great time there. Got back to Bestwood around 8pm and gathered in the bar/lounge area for a drink. Having had such a long day we decided to call it a day about 10pm just as the band came on for a private party being held there.Do not stop in rooms 6,7 or the Viscount room if there is a party on and you want to sleep earlier than 1am. We were in room 7 and may as well have had the band in there with us. Our tea cups were rattling. I asked if we could change rooms but was told the hotel was fully booked mostly by guests who were attending the party. It seemed pretty logical to me that the party guests should have had those rooms directly above the party venue and we should have had quieter rooms on the opposite side.....doesn't take much working out does it? The music stopped just after twelve but the noise of clearing up and guests who were still in party mode continued for a while after. For the few hours we did sleep, the beds were comfortable at least. Sorry Bestwood, you got this badly wrong for us and we won't be back.

"Awful experience....nice building though"

1
26/11/2017

Visited for a large (35) family gathering. On arrival it the place looks impressive and a nice reception room with log fire. Then we went through to another room to eat and the problems started.... 1. Cold - it was cold outside but for people to be eating with coats on and shivering really suggests a better heating system is needed. 2. Drinks - if you didn't have cash you couldn't get drinks as the card machine was not working. I ordered drinks at the bar& told the barman I had card only. The drinks were poured but then the card machine didn't work so they had to be left. 3. Staff- friendly staff but some probably more suited to a truck stop cafe. E.g. Bra strap hanging down more than once, not knowing what Chardonnay wine was, serving in wine glasses with lip stick marks on. 4. Food-was bland. 5. We were also forced to change the menu from an originally offered 2 menus months in advance only to be told 2 weeks before that they would now only offer from 1 menu, meaning multiple people in the party had to change. This really was Faulty Towers come to life. On the plus side it was nice building.

"Never again"

23/11/2017

Where do I start ..... The outside of the hotel looks stunning ...... after that it all goes downhill I booked a king size executive room .... I got a shabby, smelly twin When I complained, I eventually got 'upgraded' to a four poster room called King James - it was awful, I think it was last decorated when King james was in power. As a Diamond Elite member I though Best western would look after me as a loyal customer and make sure rooms were correctly allocated etc .... how wrong I was. The room was old & shabby, there was an old musty / dusty smell in the room and a damp smell in the bathroom, the room needs a total refurb asap. In addition to a terrible , bland room there were dead flies on windowsills!, old grey net curtains, curtains that were partially off their tracks, the bathroom was ancient, with a ripped towel, no loo brush and cheap loo roll, I would have been very disappointed if this was my wedding suite. The free wifi was none existent and did not work for more than 10 seconds at a time, the restaurant was OK, the food was very poor (hard chips?"! how does that happen??) In the morning the plug sockets were not working - they were the night before .. so no coffee in the morning. During check out I was overcharged for drinks I did not have, and finally the hotel standards must appeal to a certain type of customer as I found a cigarette stubbed out on my car - how lovely Not booked this hotel for @ 2 ½ years … Hoped it would of changed or have been upgraded....... I will never book it again nor recommend it to my work colleagues Other similar priced hotels in the area are far superior - I shall be there in future! There is a plaque in reception 2014 marking 30 years service as a best western hotel ..... doesnt really account for anything - I shall be posting my comment on tripadvisor and writing to head office

23/11/2017

Nice looking hotel Very Victorian shame the decor in the room wasn't up to scratch plaster peeling in walls and furniture was dated although bathroom was clean. Strange noises in the night and there was no remote for the tv and the curtains didn't meet in the middle when closed so light kept me awake. Shame because I expected more from this company. It seems most of their hotels are in need of some tlc

"Not a jewel in Best Western's crown"

2
19/11/2017

I stay at a few Best Western hotels with work. They are usually pretty comfortable, well located with a decent breakfast. They all have their own individuality and a little bit of charm making them better than the other budget chain hotels. Unfortunately, there is very little 'charm' at Bestwood Lodge. It could be fantastic with a statement bar area with surrounding gallery, but the rooms and atmosphere let it down completely. My room was three corridors, two flights of stairs and a considerable hike from reception and when I arrived, I was disappointed to find tired carpets, curtains and bathroom. It really needs complete renovation. Dinner was another strange experience as the restaurant had a very odd atmosphere. The steak was surprisingly very good though, so no complaints with the food. The staff are all friendly and trying their best, but the hotel lets them down. Breakfast was a decent selection of cooked and cold buffet items. It's quite isolated from Nottingham and I wouldn't stay here again if visiting the area. Hopefully Best Western will invest in updating this very tired hotel soon.

"Such great value! A very quiet but lovely hen night"

5
19/11/2017

Stayed overnight as part of a hen night package. Brilliant time, the girls providing the beauty treatments were professional and provided a variety of options.Tea and coffee provided throughout the day, The afternoon tea was great, we couldn't eat it all. There were chocolates, popcorn and face packs in the rooms!! This hotel is a delightful blast from the past. It is a three star graded hotel and like many huge Gothic piles needs a lot of upkeep , Beautiful main entrance and bar area and superb restaurant . The loos have been upgraded and were very modern and almost out of keeping with the building. Radiator wasn't working in one room but the helpful staff soon sorted this out. Dinner was very good and was included in the price of our package. We chose from the a la carte menu with no restriction. The sea bass was brilliant and so was the steak. Breakfast which was included was as you would expect, Buffet style with everything you normally have

"Stay well away!! haunted, dated, rubbish breakfast"

15/11/2017

I stayed here for four nights the place gives you the creeps. Place has not been decorated since WWII. The showers are week and poor. The breakfast was swimming in grease and thrown together. Very expensive for what you got. This is the ideal place to tip you over the edge or get a divorce.

Lovely historical place with great staff, friendly and helpful also dog friendly. We had a family room in a side wing, very peaceful even though the weekend we stayed there were two weddings on. Lovely walks around the hotel. There was a good range for breakfast and a personal service from the staff. The hotel is an old hunting lodge and the bar has wood panelling,we loved the place and it's history and will definitely be back.

"Great setting"

3
07/11/2017

A great setting with great grounds to walk the dog and a very imposing building. Sadly the room was fairly jaded. No lift available. Didn't sleep well due to a noisy fire door next to our room. The cooked breakfast was good. It suited us, as only needed a room for one night and had a dog with us.

"Nice hotel "

07/11/2017

We enjoyed our stay in this hotel, staff are all lovely especially Carol, lovely hotel for a wedding. Only criticism would be bar menu bit poor in choice but happy with overall stay. Never saw the ghost thank goodness ??

"Beautiful building full of history but service and standard of accommodation lets it down"

3
23/10/2017

This is a truly gorgeous building in a beautiful location. There is apparently a resident ghost and there is lots of interesting history. As a historic building it has no lift. However on arrival there was noone at the desk and despite ringing a few times I found myself having to go to the bar to try and find someone so I could book in. We were allocated a first floor room and tried to use the chairlift for my 80+ year old mother who has a heart condition. We could not get it to work so called a member of staff who also had a go and we were told it had not been charged but that it would be in time for us to go back up after dinner later on that evening. The room could have done with some updating for the price one pays. The paint was peeling in places around the windows and generally we felt that this was a wasted asset. Best Western should definitely invest in this place. It has great potential. So having read the reviews we decided to eat out and found a great Greek restaurant locally which we highly recommend. On coming back and wanting to go back to our room the chair lift once more did not work despite members of staff having a go at it. We were reassured that this would be fixed by maintenance and that tomorrow it would be working. To cut a long story short. It never worked throughout our stay. The next day we came down to breakfast with a good 15 minutes before the end and the various bits of hot were nearly empty. The waitress and the cook did not look very pleased to see us. As usual to my breakfast habit I headed for the fresh melon salad. This was old and I knew it was off as the melon was very sharp . So I put that aside and tried the tinned grapefuit again that was off. THe scrambled egg was dry and there was a spoonful of mushrooms. We asked for tea and coffee and as no cups arrived we eventually had to go and get cups from the bar area. There was a fork missing at the table and so we had to borrow that from a nearby table. All in all breakfast was a disaster and I called the manger who took a small percentage off our bill. Trying to check out after breakfast again there no one at reception. The staff I feel really need to be more customer focussed and learn what customer service is all about. We would love to go back with a working chairlift and with re-trained staff.

"A True Hidden Gem!"

5
18/10/2017

I don't know why this hidden gem didn't get better reviews, but I sure had a great time. Booked a family suite at last minute during my road trip all around UK, and it turned out to be one of the best experiences. I was slightly surprised to find that they offered a "Breakfast and Dinner included" rate for no extra cost, and I was expecting nothing more than fish n' chips for dinner. We arrived pretty late around 7pm, and was immediately drawn to all the lovely architectural details of this grand establishment. Inside we were greeted promptly and shown to our room in no time. I can see why some people called this place tired and in need of refurbishment, but to me it has all the appeal of a place with a lot of history. Bottom line is, our room turned out to be big, clean, and charismatic. Nothing like those cookie cutter hotels. Then we had our dinner in the very lovely dining hall, with a three-course full menu. Steak and fresh salmon didn't disappoint, and I particularly enjoyed the desserts (hot pudding with orange and lemon dressing was my favorite). Breakfast next morning was also a delight with abundant servings of eggs/tomatoes and smoked salmons. On a Friday morning, there weren't a lot of guests and we felt like we had the whole place to ourselves and took a leisurely stroll in the back gardens bathed in the morning sun light. Oh did I mention that for three adults, the total charge was merely 90+ quids? Can't beat that price and I'd willingly pay much more for a wonderfully relaxed night at this place again.

"Delicious Afternoon Tea"

4
18/10/2017

I was in a large party who booked the Ballroom for an Afternoon Tea celebration. The staff were accommodating and friendly and the food was varied and delicious. They were willing to cater for those with special dietary requirements ( for example I needed dairy-free) and plenty of tea and coffee was available. My one slight gripe was that there was a trip hazard across the middle of the room where 2 pieces of carpet joined. An attempt was made to remedy this with tape but it wasn't fully successful. Otherwise the furnishings and surroundings were comfortable and clean. There was also a bar where other drinks could be bought.

"Don't bother"

1
17/10/2017

Poor...poor and very poor. Arrived at 5.45pm went straight for a meal, selected the fish and chips! Fish over cooked, chips undercooked. Pudding out of a can! Warmed in the microwave or so it seemed.... waited 20 minutes for pudding after the main had been taken away. Went to my room, heating off, room quite chilly, rang reception, was cut off, tried again, long wait, was told the duty manager would check the heating, that was 30 minutes ago. To tired to keep this up tonight, will challenge again tomorrow, have found extra blankets in the cupboard... not worth the money. Lovely old building though!

"Disappointing "

2
07/10/2017

I stayed here last week and was very disappointed. From the outside this place looks really grand and once inside even better. However it stops there. As a BW member I had an upgrade. I would not like to see what a standard room was like. My room was quite small and old fashioned. I had a very small TV. But the worse thing was there was no heating on. It was freezing. Speaking to a few of my colleagues at breakfast and they all said the same. I did ask at reception but there was no explanation but just an apology. Staff were very nice though.

"Enjoyed our stay."

3
02/10/2017

We booked to stay here for two nights, my partner was keen to stay because he'd been here previously, years ago, (he's into history) the staff are friendly and the food is good, I'm coeliac and they went out of their way to accommodate my dietary needs. Breakfast was good, help yourself to what you'd like, scrambled eggs are there and we were informed you can have poached or fried eggs also cooked fresh upon request. Our room was large with a large double bed, it wasn't modern like the rooms on the website but it's the cheapest room we paid for in 10 days of travelling around Yorkshire and it was a palace compared to one "Hotel" we stayed in, the bathroom was a good size, the shower needs a really good clean especially the shower door frame!! The bar area is nice to sit in and we had a meal there the day we arrived as did quite a few other guests. We were happy enough.

"Over night stay"

4
01/10/2017

We stayed at this hotel over night, the reception staff are friendly on arrival. The room was really quite small and basic, our double turned out to be two single beds pushed together! Basic kettle and tea/ coffee , hairdryer. You have to call reception if you need the iron and they bring it up. We didn't eat in the restaurant as we had other plans with friends. We did however enjoyed the breakfast. Nice gardens. Would we stay again? Yes maybe.

"On it's last legs!"

01/10/2017

Attended a wedding event here this weekend and was sorely disappointed. This is a tired old lady that deserves more and Best Western as a huge group appear to have taken her for all she's got! For the beautiful historic building she is the entrance was very uninspiring. The receptionist was very professional and gave us all the information we needed. The room was OK with all the things you would expect for a 3 star - Huge bed was a bonus. The bathroom was sparkling but the toilet cistern took an age to fill. The building is old and tired but I didn't expect to actually walk through cobwebs in the bedrooms. I don't want to comment on the actual wedding do but could :-(. We decided to go for a pre-drink in the bar. It took my husband at least 5 minutes to find someone to serve us. For a Saturday night at 6.30 pm I was quite surprised there was nobody else in there. I wanted a snack and wanted nuts but they didn't have any so got some crisps. Although they were in date they were a little soft. The evening function was run expertly by the C & B manager. She was so on the ball. Carpets left out in a corridor between the function room and reception were a definite health & safety issue. The beds were very comfortable but not enough pillows. We were woken up early doors. It sounded like the bins were being emptied outside our bedroom. Not just emptied but they were being hit to get everything out. Apparently there were three elephants staying above us because every time they came downstairs I heard every step. So breakfast was between 8 and 10. We decided to go for 9. Went into the dining room and there was no one to greet us so we waited only to be told to sit anywhere. There was only two other tables occupied yet there were 3 uncleared tables and two inattentive waitresses. I was very excited to see lovely Longley Farm yoghurts available. The 'full breakfast' was very uninspiring. No choice of egg. Scrambled or nothing here. No black pudding (maybe that's a Yorkshire thing) a bit 'also ran'. The yoghurt turned out to be 4 days out of date.... Won't be back!

"Pleasant Stay "

5
01/10/2017

Stayed here for one night as we were attending a wedding nearby. Lovely old Victorian building with original features, yes the decor could do with a spruce but personally I feel it would ruin the ambience of the place. Room was a little small but with a comfortable bed and adequate for its purpose at £55 p/n, bathroom was clean and surprisingly large. You did have to leave the hot water running for a couple of minutes before the water was at a comfortable temperature but there was a notice explaining this. Receptionist was friendly and helpful, allowing us to check in early so we didn't have to go through the process late that evening. The tea, biscuits and bottled water was a life saver when we got back! Overall a pleasant place to stay if you're on a budget or just need somewhere to rest after a long day. We didn't drink or eat at the hotel but the breakfast did smell pretty good in the morning. I would definitely return if I was ever in the area again. Katie

"this hotel does not what service means"

28/09/2017

i had the pleasure of staying at this hotel for the last 2 days, room dirty , no remote for tv apparently no spare batteries in hotel, room vastly over priced and i would not recommend this hotel the staff showed no interest in serving you and i get the feeling as i was staying there at there convenience

"Recent stay "

27/09/2017

Stayed at the Best Western hotel on Saturday 23 rd Sept and paid well over the odds due to a marathon in Nottingham £130. Have to say was thinking yes when I turned up as the building was very grand. Sadly room didn't match, room small, bathroom even smaller, was like a cupboard under the stairs. The toilet was really under the stairs and if you were any taller than 5ft 2ins you would knock yourself out standing up. Shower was so small if you were any bigger than a size 12 you wouldn't get in. Had to run the shower 10 mins to get any hot water at night and the morning, not happy to waste that much water. As earlier said bathroom under the stairs so every time anyone went up or down the stairs it was like they were in the room so didn't get much sleep. Did complain in the morning and although the receptionist took £30 off the bill she didn't seem to that bothered and just said she would tel the manager. Real shame

"Pleasant and lovely stay"

26/09/2017

Stayed here for two nights whilst attending a course near by. The staff are very polite and helpful. The food is superb and plentiful particularly at breakfast. The food was always hot and well stocked. The hotel is very old but considering this it is in very good condition and nicely kept. Rooms have everything you need. The area is very quiet so no outside noise. I'd recommend this place.

"Sunday lunch"

24/09/2017

After having our wedding here 2 years ago we came back to rekindle some happy memories with the children.... the carvery main course wasn't too bad, but the salad on the starters were limp and old!! The jug of water we got given was full of dirt inside!! The table covers were dirty and the staff although friendly weren't very knowledgeable and seemingly overwhelmed even though it wasn't busy. Overall very disappointed with the standard of cleanliness and lack of attention to detail!!

18/09/2017

We stayed at this hotel as part of a wedding party. I have mostly positive things to say about this place. I have to commend them on every element of the food they served throughout the day from the wedding breakfast which was brilliant, evening buffet great & plentiful & very nice breakfast. Stunning grounds. Staff very pleasant & helpful. My only negative would be the hotel itself needs some money spending on it as the décor is very tired so its a shame

"Hotel needs attention to small detail"

17/09/2017

Stayed here overnight for nearby wedding. Beautiful hotel in great surroundings. But needs a good clean up . Family room has crack in bath panel valance on bed was ripped one of quilt cover had a tear in. Such a disappointment as looked lovely as we arrived. Staff helpful. Breakfast was OK out of date yoghurt served think Best Western need to invest some money into what could be a beautiful hotel before it gets too shabby

"Worst place I've ever stayed"

1
10/09/2017

We booked into this hotel for three nights having stayed in several Best Western and always been impressed. Not so this time! A shabby reception area with a heavy door so difficult to get into with luggage. Friendly receptionist who told us we had a second floor room (Actually the attic) but there was no lift so a long trek up stairs, through heavy doors and along winding corridors. To say there was any service is the bar would be a misnomer; a young woman initially who had absolutely NO customer skills and never once made any eye contact with us or even acknowledged that we existed.. She was attempting to serve someone but there seemed to be a huge problem for the customer trying to explain what he wanted, then she couldn't work the touch screen 'till'. After nearly 10 mins that was sorted. Instead of turning to us, she simply left the bar! Several minutes later we went through the same charade with an older, pleasant but ineffective member of staff. I shall draw a veil over the most appalling meal we have ever been served except to say in both cases it was dry to the point of being inedible. To round off - served coffee in a teapot and a jug of long life milk. The morning found no hot water - reception said we needed to run both taps and someone would come up and run the taps in adjoining rooms... I could go on. We booked out after one night

"A terrible stay that got cut short"

1
30/08/2017

We arrived at reception to be told a triple room was not available, which had been booked. The member of staff was polite and took a triple room from someone else who hadn't booked in. When we got to the room it smelt like a sewer and had had very noisy pipes. The toilet wasn't connected correctly so we could smell the sewer. The hotel was fully booked so we couldn't move. That night there were 2 weddings so we were kept awake by music blaring till 1am! The drunken revellers returning to their rooms. The next day, there were 7 tables laid for the whole of the hotel for breakfast. I had to start clearing a table so we could sit down. They run out of plates and bacon. It was a joke. We were meant to stay 2 nights but went home after 1. I travel a lot and can honestly say it was the worst hotel I have ever been to.

"Great potential"

3
29/08/2017

Beautifull historic hotel in great surroundings, great for bikers and walking. Briljant historic environement with original features and well documented. The rooms were clean and tidy. Such a shame it has been allowed to become tired and in some cases even shabby. The staff is friendly and amiable, but not very competent as if they lack training, they do their best, but some guidance would go a long way. To Best Western: please invest in this hotel and its staff: the place has enormous potential!

I've never been let down by a Best Western and this was no different. This is a beautiful old building with some original features. The room was clean and comfortable, although I found the bed quite hard. The bathroom looked new, the shower was small but perfectly formed. There were 2 wedding receptions that night but I wasn't disturbed by them. The staff were friendly and helpful. Breakfast was okay, a mix of cereals, English and European. I'd be happy to stay again and enjoy the beautiful grounds which I didn't have a chance to do this time.

I really enjoyed myself and the waiting staff were so helpful, lovely and polite but the manager in charge was blatantly rude to the staff in front of the top table and someone even had to have a word with him. Especially one of the staff I would like to give a special thank, I don't know their name but he looked smart, work ready and he has black afro because he was still smiling, looking confident even when one of the managers was look like saying bad things at him.

"Nice cheap Hotel"

18/08/2017

I stayed here earlier Aug, booked in for a week on business. I liked the look of the hotel and it was the closest to where I was working. All the staff were really friendly & couldn't do enough to help. The room was very clean & a decent size, the bathroom could have done with a bit of an update, but i wasn't expecting it to be "modern" Couple of mornings i had to wait for about 15 mins for the hot water, that was fine apart from the waste of water. The breakfast was very nice, if not a little limited & a couple of the days there wasn't a cooked buffet out, but they would get you one (might not have been that many people staying that night to justify a buffet) I had room service most nights, all the meals were a good size and nice, there was one that seemed a little over cooked. Finally there was a problem with the beer pumps every night, from being flat to hot & no one seemed to be able to fix it, stuck to bottles. All in all a lovely hotel, they accept dogs, but if your looking for a modern hotel this is not it. If i could have given this a "good" mark i would have.

a very grand old building where you could imagine the Sheriff of Nottingham might have lived. Set in a county park a short distance from the centre of Nottingham. It has a fair size car park, but signage to hotel could be improved. Both breakfast and evening meal offered a reasonable selection of dishes

"Pleasant venue for wedding but in need of TLC"

02/07/2017

It's quite a difficult review to write as there are many positives about this hotel but there a few areas that need to improve. We attended a wedding which for a venue is lovely and we couldn't fault the food and the rooms used for the wedding were very good. However areas of the hotel are tired and old and in need of tlc. Our room needed redecorating and a new bathroom which had mould in places and you could see where the bath had been revealed numerous times. The net curtains were grubby and stains on the carpet. Fortunately we barely spent anytime in the room. The outside is nice but disappointed that rubbish i.e. Cigarette packets and crisp packets were on the area where photos were taken plus over full ash trays. I think staff need to be more attentive to tidiness. Breakfast was very good lots of choice. Overall it was ok and for a wedding it was lovely but needs more attention to detail and in need of some modernising.

Started off reception asked if we were staying to eat,we asked if menus are in rooms to view,no I don't think so let me ask manager, no. Get to room two copies of menus one in a fancy folder. Room had not been thoroughly cleaned dust on bedside tables, shower area not over clean.Toiletries none existent one shower cap one sewing kit one shoe sponge two shampoo no soap or body wash. A good point does not advertise tea making just kettle wow tea making goods in room. Wife is at the best quite poor in rooms. This has to be one of the most noisiest rooms I've ever stayed in out of our window appears to be the rear of kitchens wheelie bins being open closed and moved all the time ,what sounded like drilling for over a hour around 9pm. room with a corridor door outside. So avoid room 15. One of our beds (2 singles )makes enough noise to wake the dead, now you know I'm not happy as doing this review while still in the hotel.

20/06/2017

A platinum member with Best Western and wasn't offered a free upgrade. Evening meal ordered and had to request 1hour after ordering looks like I'd been forgotten as food finally arrived after 1.5hrs, won't be going back. Very disappointed as building has lots of character and history

"Wedding weekend"

3
16/06/2017

Arrived about 1pm, room not ready, not a problem. Reception staff a bit harassed as 2 weddings that weekend. Asked for a bite to eat in the bar & told they kitchen might be closed due to 2 weddings! However, we had bacon & brie sandwiches-delish!!! Later we were told our room numbers-no offer to show us the way or carry luggage, we were on the 3rd floor & it's a LONG way. The twin room was clean & tide & basic, please don't try to bend down to pick anything up in the shower. The grounds are superb as is the building itself. The outside areas were quite lovely however the designated "smoking area" had no ashtrays. This could be a really fabulous place however no effort seems to be made to set it apart. Breakfast was quite adequate buffet style. Plenty of staff milling around...but that's all they did, no attempts made to clear used crockery. Public areas seemed to have been missed by the cleaners, the stairs etc were quite grubby. I would stay again but not in the same room.

"Ok of you get a cheap deal"

3
15/06/2017

Not the best. Staff are lovely and vwry helpful but seem ran off their feet as there dont seem to be many of them. Food ok.....not the best to be fair and drinks expensive!! Over £3 for a large lemonade from the pump. Rooms themselves are fairly clean but general areas in desperate need of a deep clean. Thick dust on large ornaments and cctv cameras. Wifi only really works in bar area and limited phone signal in hotel. Occasionally works on 1st floor and not at all on 2nd floor. Very easy to get lost in the labrynth.......could do with clearer visible sinage to show way back out especially from 2nd floor rooms. Dogs are allowed so beware if you have allergies. Cant comment on breakfast as decided against it.

"Could do better."

Old building with some interesting features and history, some nice country park walks.Like many older buildings needs some modernisation.Based on what we ate quality could be improved.Handy location to visit Nottingham and surrounding area.

"Now in to my 27th year of staying here."

5
09/06/2017

I'm now in to my 27th year of staying at Bestwood Lodge and I can't fault it. The hotel is a beautiful historic building, the rooms are clean and spacious. The breakfast is among the best I have ever had and the staff are very friendly and helpful. I am looking forward to a return trip in a few months' time.

"Victorian Building - historic rooms and pub"

3
03/06/2017

Here you live the history of Great Britan. A Pub area in the middle with tasty pub-food, a breakfast only for english lovers without any selection rather than bacon and beans. The rooms are really historic and with a nice flair, water takes a while to heat up. But it is clean and sleeping was OK.

"One night stay"

3
29/05/2017

Whilst the hotel does need some much needed tlc the rooms are clean and tidy, the on suite was clean and the breakfast was good. I would not rush back but it was fine for a one night stay. The staff we friendly and helpful but it did seem that the receptionist doubled up as barman after 9 on Saturday which made ordering drinks a bit of a pain! Overall not a bad experience just don't expect 5 star.

"Nice hotel, a little tired in places"

4
24/05/2017

I stayed for one night with work colleagues and it was really nice for the price, some areas did look a little tired but the room was clean and tidy, location is very pleasant although when the sat-nav took us through a housing estate we thought we were in the wrong place! We didn't eat there in the evening but the buffet style breakfast which was included in the price was very enjoyable and just the job after a few beers the night before.

"Stylish Scenic Stay!"

23/05/2017

Comfortable rooms, friendly staff and idyllic views. This is what I expect from a hotel when I am staying, and this is exactly what I received! I can only say that I will definitely stay here again in future!

"Great location, poor hotel"

2
22/05/2017

This place is in the middle of a country park and the surroundings are nice, this is where the positives end ! Reception looked tatty which is always a poor sign. When I got to the room which wasn't badly equipped I noticed mouldy nets and someone's beer bottle top for the previous night on the floor which would question the cleaning. The shower you had to run around to get wet it was that poor and all in all I would not return !

"Nice hotel"

3
17/05/2017

The hotel is set in lovely surroundings and a nice building, the rooms are a bit dated but this is reflected in the price paid. Breakfast was good if a little disorganised but this could have been due to the amount of people coming down at the same time

"Shabby"

1
09/05/2017

Nice building with great potential, but needs some time and effort spending on it. Staying on business and didn't meet the usual requirements- but then can't see it making a nice weekend break either. Breakfast was dire, minimal spread, no staff, and something floating in the apple juice that look remarkably like someone's spit.... I use best westerns 2 or 3 times a week with work and a they can be of a fairly low standard but wouldn't normally leave reviews... but then I've never seen spit in the juices before!!!

"Best western not so best"

30/04/2017

Visited over the Easter period, on arrival all looked good two staff members on reception and booked in quickly. The room was very large and well equipped. Arriving after a day out I opted for a shower, stepped in turned on, water cold so I informed rest of the family to be told by my daughter their is a note on the sink saying it takes a long time to get the water warm to your room due to the building been a Victorian building, rubbish boiler more like. We ate in the bar on the first night, 3 drinks ordered 1 pint of Boddingtons flat as a pancake, pulls another it's the same signs for the drinks, orders food and when it came it was not hot warm maybe foolishly I didn't complain as it was late and I was starving. We where told to just put the plates on the bar as the where busy. One member of staff on each department receptionist , bar and restaurant. Service was slow due to this. Breakfast served in the restaurant it was adequate. The room we observe was dirty and run down and noisy during the night as we where above the bar. The meal on the second night we had in the restaurant, bad dim lighting in the room blue tack on the wall from xmass decorations, speakers looking like car stereo high up in the room. More staff on tonight. Food came but again it was cold, we complained and this night sent it back, there was only 4 of us in the restaurant and staff apologised and sorted the issue listening to our complaint about the two nights meals. A duty manager came and sat with us and we where offered free sweats by her, the waitress had offered us a free drink before her so we didn't know what we where getting free or paying for. The duty manager said she will pass on our complaint to the owner in the morning in the hand over meeting. The bill in the morning was confusing as they got it wrong in our favour but the amount was more like I would like to pay due to the bad experience, after all I could have gone to a lesser establishment and paid less. Would I go back, no, I have been to two Best Western hotels in the last two years and had shocking treatment for different reasons so I'm afraid it's the last best experience for us

"Staff training needs improving!"

2
21/04/2017

Wouldn't recommend, we were unhappy with the hotel for a number of reasons: 1. When we first arrived we were waiting for staff to book us in for 5-10minutes, and when someone did finally turn up there was no apology for the delay, in fact she seemed rather hostile towards us as if we were a nuisance for giving them business! 2. There was no TV remote in the room even though it is advertised to be on top of the TV set? We could have gone down to the reception to sort it of course but we hadn't been made to feel particularly welcome so we decided to leave it, but wasn't very impressived considering the TV is one of the only amenities provided in the room. 3. (The most frustrating point) We were woken by the housekeeping staff at 9:45am by a knock on the door and call from the member of staff. Not impressed at all with this given that the check-out time is 11am! The most important part of paying for a hotel is that you get a good night's sleep so this was extremely frustrating. Good points: bed was ok, location of hotel is nice, exterior of hotel is attractive. We won't be returning.

"Interesting "

3
20/04/2017

Well, not the best by any any means but a very quirky Victorian building. A bit intimidating on approach and entry but everything seems to deliver. I ate in the bar and had a very reasonable steak and ale pie. Decor in the room left a lot to be desired but cannot complain as bed was ok and bathroom clean with ok shower. Location is actually very pretty next to the Country Park, but did seem to drive through the local housing estate to get there. I guess it would need a huge amount of money to bring it fully back to life. As it is, it offers functional accommodation and dining at a very reasonable price.

"So much potential"

3
02/04/2017

We stayed for 1 night as my friend was holding a party at the hotel. I'd read the previous reviews so did not have high expectations. This is a beautiful old building in a lovely location with such great potential. Such a shame that it has been allowed to become tired and in serious need of a refurb. That said the staff were pleasant. The room we had had a lovely view and the bed and bathroom were clean, however the soft furnishings were in need of a good clean and not sure when the carpet last saw a vacuum cleaner!

Took a group of 24 adults for Sunday Lunch. This is a hotel with lots of history. The site of the hunting lodge where Richard 111rd was staying when he heard that Henry V11 Had landed at Milford Haven. For history buffs the story of the house is well documented. The staff were excellent.Mainly young ladies and all helpful and efficient. The service was a little slow but with only two girls waiting on 24 people this was unavoidable. Noone was in a hurry and the girls did a fantastic job.so this was not a problem. We all had the carvery choice for lunch and it was very good with the exception of the soup which I found flavourless. The main course was a choice of meats and lots of choices of vegetables. The chef made superb Yorkshire puddings.Very large and light and fluffy. There was a good choice of sweets and everyone said how much they had enjoyed their meal. The hotel is in a lovely setting, surrounded by woodland .There are cycle paths and nice walks in the grounds and the hotel is dog friendly. We had a very pleasant lunch and we will certainly return.

"So much potential......."

30/03/2017

We stayed for two nights, one of which was Mothers' Day. Good points:- Lovely country location surrounded by lots of woodland walks. Interesesting historical hotel - NOT one of the bland modern variety! Very dog friendly - there is even a comfortable sitting area where you can take your dog. Our room was one of the larger renovated ones and was very good, with an excellent modern bathroom. The bed was large and comfy. The decor and furniture in the public areas were in keeping with the historic ambience of the building. Bad points:- The staff were amiable and friendly but incompetent and appear badly trained, or not trained at all! Dinner was an experience..... the food was just adequate but we had to ask and ask for certain elements of the meal and we gave up waiting for the dessert menu to arrive so didn't bother with a dessert in the end! There were only six of us dining! (There was a big wedding in another part of the building, but even so, we too were paying guests!) The bill was wrong too and had to be corrected. Breakfast... We were not greeted and the system not explained. It is the usual buffet type, but apparently there is a menu where different food can be cooked? I saw poached eggs emerging from the kitchen on our second day! We managed to track down a member of waiting staff and asked for toast, which duly arrived - and then we had to ask for some butter and preserves as none were on the buffet display. There was no Continental breakfast option. Although we were reasonably early for breakfast the food on display was dry and crispy and had obviously been under the heat lamps for quite some time. I really cannot recomment the food. There is a stair-lift for disabled folks, but no lift, so getting upstairs with luggage can be difficult. To summerise:- The "bean counters" have obviously been at work, and whilst appreciating the need for economy, there is no excuse for poorly trained staff, however amiable they may be. This lovely hotel has so much potential, but it needs some TLC and investment. Please Best Western, don't give up on this hotel, it could be really lovely.

"Lunch on a diet"

3
27/03/2017

Four of us called in for Monday lunch. We were aware this venue does not provide a restaurant service at lunchtime, but they have an advertised attractive menu of bar food so we thought would make an interesting change from our usual fodder. If you don't already know the place it is in an interesting setting, and a very attractive building (allegedly a former Royal hunting lodge). I said the menu was attractive but I don't know if the food is! It seems that when they have a large wedding party in at the weekend the guests who stay overnight then drift down for breakfast late into the morning. That must make the kitchen very busy right until nearly lunchtime. The kitchen staff also know that they will be on duty again in the evening with folk coming in for dinner, so they go home at lunchtime. I don't blame them for that, they must be tired when short staffed. I blame the management for their ineptitude. A first year catering student could tell them that when you cannot provide an advertised lunch service you should a least put a chalk board outside the hotel entrance saying, "Sorry folk, due to circumstance we cannot provide the advertise bar lunch service today."

"A Lodge full of steps"

3
28/11/2016

I stayed for one night with my daughter on a Saturday and we had dinner at the restaurant. The Lodge has a beautiful view on the park at the back side of the building. The front side and main entrance are less impressive but still agreeable. Our room was at the second floor and accessible through a sometime quite narrow twisting and turning path full of steps and stairs, up and down almost like a maze. The access to ordinary rooms (ours at least) is in stark contrast with the vast lounge. The Lounge and corridors decoration have a lot of dark oak panels. Our room ( nr 32) ( a twin bed room) was of acceptable size, but without fridge and with little space around the beds. The bathroom was instead pretty narrow and uncomfortable, accessible again via a step. The dinner was slightly disappointing: very sober presentation of the dishes. I received a side dish of green beans almost row.... I took a salad of goat cheese and beetroot , followed by see bass and my daughter a roasted chicken. The fish was well cooked I acknowledge. The breakfast was also slightly disappointing compared to a best western in France for instance ( very very pale coffee and no fresh yogurt, cheese or ham. The waitresses were very kind and polite, at the reception and at the restaurant. To summarize I would call this a slightly old fashioned English Lodge that needs to be revived to the old glory with a pinch of enthusiasm and some novelties ( e.g. Fresh flowers , more lights and lighter colors).

"Great Building, Good Food & Excellent Staff"

4
25/11/2016

I have a soft spot for buildings with character, you can keep your vanilla Premier-yawns, I will take something old and crafted, warts, creaky floors and all. Bestwood is a stunning building, a little tired in palces but heaps of history and character. The room was a little small and throwing a bit of paint around would help. The bar area has an open fire, a high ceiling with balconies that lead to the rooms and a nice place to be. The food was brilliant, the steak came with peppercorn sauce, the was so nicely done that it would have been wrong to mask the tatse with the sauce. Breakfast was buffet style on hot plates, not something I am a fan of, preferring fresh cooked. That said, it was hot(ish) and not dried out. Would happily stay again.

"Heating and food problems."

2
23/11/2016

I stayed here Monday of this week. Beautiful setting, marred by poor experience and staff response. It was converted to a hotel in the 70s and I guess there haven't been many changes since then? There was a problem with the heating to the extent we were huddled around the fire, throwing magazines on once the wood was gone. There was also a problem in the kitchen!? all food was taking over an hour to arrive and they talked about being fully booked even though there was a handful of people there. It would have been better to acknowledge the problems and apologise. Shame I was only there one night and it perhaps is not typical of the hotel.

"Our stay in a place used by Royals"

21/11/2016

A magnificent building frequented centuries ago by royalty for sometimes dubious reasons ! Great staff who were extremely helpful and a four poster bed to help ease our bodies after a night with Graeme Park .We loved it all ......

"Best Bestwoood!"

17/11/2016

A great hotel with friendly and helpful staff. Large room with goodven-suite facilities (ours was in a turret!!!). Very cmfortable lounge and dining room. Excellent food whether trying the bar snacks , dinner or breakfast.

"Rude receptionist"

1
07/11/2016

The setting around the hotel is very nice, a lot of nice views and the hotel itself is nice, although me and my boyfriend stayed with another couple and the receptionist was very rude to us both, we felt because we were a lot younger than the other guest she was very patronising and so rude when she spoke to us, I wouldn't advise people aged in there young 20s to stay here as the staff and older guest stare at you like your not supposed to be there.

"Wedding Venue"

4
06/11/2016

I was already familiar with the venue as I live nearby- it's set in beautiful parkland, an historic home with a perfect chapel. I can't say it was perfect as a hotel but to be that then millions would have to be spent on it and it would cost a fortune to stay the night or host a wedding, but the friendly staff do their best so you can forgive a few faults. Would highly recommend it for a wedding- the chapel is lovely, and we had an excellent wedding meal- the beef was perfect- not overdone, and the starter very tasty. The adjoining bar area was fairly cold but that's the only real negative (I did ask for more heating). Evening buffet was well appreciated- am unsure if my daughter had applied a maximum per-person charge but personally I found some of it unappealing. Ok, I'm nitpicking. The rooms are what one would expect in an old building but the beds are on a par with any good hotel and I had a great night's sleep. Spotless modern bathrooms too! I can see that spending on a building like this has to be limited but there are many simple improvements that could be done- the blue/yellow (& green..) soft furnishings are very dated but could be replaced in the bedrooms with more neutral dress curtains and blackout blinds, and new paintjobs would improve tremendously. Certainly if you're considering a wedding here then don't let the odd poor review deter you; this is well worth it overall.

"Nice place, but..."

23/10/2016

Stayed here for a dinner/dance with friends. Staff were friendly and helpful, room and communal areas were clean and functional. The grounds are lovely for a walk, the main bar was small but nicely appointed and the building was interesting and attractive. Service was generally good, although the bar in the ballroom was very understocked and understaffed early in the evening, and one of the more popular wines had run out before we even started ordering for dinner. That seemed to be a theme - no ginger ale for mixers, plates ran out at breakfast, coffee ran out, hot water for tea ran out, pastries/croissants ran out... The staff were continually reacting to a need to resupply, rather than proactively taking care of it... But the main thing people in our group commented on, and a pet hate of mine, was that food was served on cold plates, vegetables served in cold dishes, plates for breakfast were cold, so all the food was cold by the time we got to eat it, which was a shame, because the food was actually pretty good. I think we may have suffered a little for the fact they had a wedding party in also, and I suspect that they can do a lot better, but sadly we didn't get to see that happen.. For what we paid, I think it was a good venue. Would I return? Maybe if I knew they'd learned about plate warmers and the guy on the main bar learns how to pull a proper pint!

"great hotel"

20/10/2016

a place where the staff do more than there job to help your stay be the best ever. a place steep with historyand fantastic settings. not first class, but triple first class. You will certainly enjoy and relax.

"Very very poor"

1
18/10/2016

Room was very tired and the toilet had the remnants of the last guests toilet trip. Shower was filthy, and when I asked the staff the last was cleaned, they said it was 2 days ago. The staff suggested the the toilet 'mess' was cleaning fluid - but I explained then it must be 'dirty protest' cleaner they use as the mess was, well I don't wNt to be vulgar !!! Will recommend it is removed from our company preferred list for visiting the area.

"Family meal"

3
15/10/2016

I attended the hotel for a meal with family and there were 10 of us. The staff tries their best to make us feel welcome but I got the impression we were a burden on the evening. The hotel seemed barely occupied and there were items missing of the menu and wine lists. The food was fairly good and the price was very reasonable. The waitress that was serving our party was very polite and did and excellent job.

"Nice location, impressive exterior, disappointing rooms"

3
06/10/2016

This hotel is in a really nice location and has a very impressive exterior. There is plenty of parking. The reception staff was very friendly and check in was efficient and quick. My room was one quite a long way from reception and it was awkward navigating multiple stair cases, narrow corridors and narrow fire doors with a wheeled bag, suit carrier and laptop bag. The room I was in was quite large, a friend who has stayed their regularly told me they have quite small rooms, so perhaps I just got one of the bigger rooms they have. The room was very dated and tired, reasonably comfortable but certainly needed a refurbishment. The bathroom was also very tired but clean. There was no remote for the TV, so it was not possible to change channels or turn it off from the bed. I ate in the bar and the good was ok and again, staff friendly.

"Not a happy experience"

2
05/10/2016

This was a grave disappointment. Hotel looked lovely & was in a nice location, but was severely let down by the standard of housekeeping (eg room not clean, toilet dirty, bins full, biscuits open & half eaten, many items missing) & the attitude of the staff (eg we were told to move our own tables at breakfast).Breakfast also disappointing as many items that were on the menu were missing.

"Friendly staff. Pleasant stay."

4
03/10/2016

We booked this hotel last minute. It was dog friendly and surrounded by woodland . I must admit I had some misgivings after reading some of the reviews but I was pleasantly surprised when I arrived. Our room was on the top floor but was more spacious than I expected and wonderfully quiet. All the staff were friendly and the service and the food in the restaurant was excellent. It is an old hotel with some wonderful Victorian Gothic features and yes, some areas are waiting refurbishment but it has an air of a place gradually improving rather than going downhill. Being able to walk out of the hotel with our dog into magnificent woods was a bonus. I would definitely stay here again

"Cold everywhere."

2
01/10/2016

On arrival the outside looked very characterful with a very friendly receptionist. The bar looked warm and inviting. There was 2 weddings going on so was told we had been relocated to the conservatory for dinner. They have a funny idea of a conservatory it was a room comprised of no windows 4 tables of which only 3 had been set up no ambience what so ever. We cancelled our dinner reservation and decided to go into town. When we informed the staff of our dissatisfaction with the dinner room there was a shrug of the shoulder. After our rainy afternoon in town we returned to a cold bar and even frostier staff. There was no manners his whole attitude was as if he didn't want to there. That's when we noticed a bucket in the middle of the bar floor collecting rain from a hole in the glass roof, there was also bits of broken glass, With little children running round the bucket, as they do. We went to our room which was freezing the heating had gone off (I think they forgot to put 50p in the meter) we switched it on when we went out but when we got back it had ceased working. Shower time, took forever to heat up and when I looked down there was pubes in there which I hasten to add were not mine!! Oh be prepared for a trek to your room not very disabled friendly never seen so many steps, I'm shattered just thinking about them. All in all this dismal place needs a complete overhaul with the decor and staff.

"Spend money on it and CLEAN IT!"

2
25/09/2016

Stunning setting and architecturally beautiful building, but: 1) it's really run down. Peeling wall paper, dirty paintwork, dated fixtures and fittings. 2) it's dirty: my room look like it hasn't been hoovered. Hallways looked like they could do with a good clean. 3) the staff seem very unmotivated. A couple were bright and chatty, most were grumpy and impossible to get a civil word from 4) my room was very cramped. I could barely move in the shower, it was that small

"Beautiful setting for an old style hotel"

3
24/09/2016

When we arrived we were met with a magnificent view of the old style hotel set in lovely grounds. The reception staff were very helpful but then we had to climb 2 flights of stairs with all our luggage plus a few more stairs to eventually reach our room. Not a good place if you have back problems or elderly. The room looked spacious but on further investigation we found numerous dead hornets caught up in the curtains and all over the floor. The room didn't look like it had been cleaned properly as the bathroom was grimy, the carpet was filthy and I found a used tissue down the side of the bedside table. They need to review the standards of the cleaning staff. Lovely grounds to walk in but the bar area was oldy worldy and the bar itself was sticky from spilt drinks. Would have been great if they had addressed a few basic issues.

"Cancelled booking by hotel"

1
23/09/2016

Despite having booked through Hotels.com several weeks ago this hotel phoned the day before our stay to cancel our room. No offer to find another hotel room nearby or any assistance at all. We had booked as we were visiting a colleagues wedding but now can't get an affordable room near to the venue. Massively disappointed especially as no offer to help find some where else or pay for taxis. Sorry but apologizing just doesn't cut it on customer service

On arrival we drove up to the hotel which is down a dark stoney road alot more than the advertised 15 mins from the centre around 30mins. Parked the car in a carpark with young lads nanging out dance tunes. The building looked nice as we entered, a nice lady checked us in but reception area was very dirty, not a great first impression. on the walk to our room in a main hallway there was a ladies thong on the floor (yes thats right) . On entering our room our door rattled ,2 singles pushed together, tiny showeroom, veiw was a roof and skip, no soap, broke wardrobe. It was the funniest one night stay ive ever had not in a good way. so many amusing things cant mention them all

My visit to bestwood lodge was to get some much needed peace and quiet which is what I got. The place is steeped in history and it's shows. The staff are friendly and helpful. The drinks are expensive and the Guinness is awful. The bar staff couldn't poor it correctly and was totally watery and flat half way down the glass. Our room was lovely with gorgeous views and good clean facilities. I'll definitely be back

arrived at the bestwood hotel on monday evening ( if you are using a sat nav - keep going it's at least a mile further on) on first impressions it looked very impressive. check in was smooth and quick then we were directed to our room which was on the first floor (room15) we asked if we could have a ground floor room as i have walking difficulties and was told there were no ground floor rooms and NO lift. we set off in the direction the receptionist gave us and were confronted by stairs - lot's of them. my work mate told me to stay where i was was and he'd come back for my case but i stubbornly carried on - not a good idea lol. there is a chair lift up this part of the building but we couldn't get it to work. once you arrive at the top of the stairs (two and a half flights) you go through a door that overlooks the bar area (we should have had a beer before the attack of the stairs lol ) which is quite impressive. from there we went down two small flights of stairs after going around the bar area. we finally reached our room which was just at the end of the corridor and right a bit. we like to have a beer and a cig or three after a 12 hour shift but the thought of going up and down the stairs didn't appeal to me so my colleague suggested we take our cans of beer outside - brilliant. we sat out-side the bar/ smoking area overlooking wonderful grounds and put the world to rights lol. we both slept well and i tried the shower out next morning ( oh dear) the bathroom is a nice size but the shower cubicle has got to be the smallest i've encounted and the water pressure was poor ( i can spit quicker lol). we didn't bother with breakfast at £11.90 per head as we start work at 7am and there was no sign of life when we left around 6.15. all in all a lovely old fashioned hotel with no modern gadgets - like a lift

This beautiful hotel, could be getting top reviews with some small changes. I visit every now and again with a dear little friend who is 100 years old. We both love the surroundings and the building, but always struggle to find staff to make us a coffee. We come in the mornings as my friend likes to be back to her care home in plenty time for lunch, but staff seem sparse. We were served by a pleasant young girl this morning, but were shocked at £5.90 for 2 cappuccinos, I asked about the biscuits we normally get served, but we're told that you now have to pay extra. I made a comment saying that we probably wouldn't come again and the young lady came out with a complimentary plate of biscuits, however they were stale! I don't think we will bother again, which is a shame as it could be a fabulous place for lunch and afternoon teas.

My wife and I have just visited the Bestwood Lodge hotel for a family wedding, our first visit back to Nottingham for 20 years the service by the receptionist was faultless she could not have been more helpful, our room was clean and comfortable with views over the surrounding woods , breakfast in the dining room was plentiful with a wide choice of foods for every taste, over all an enlightening experience after reading all the negative reviews we had read before travelling

"Shabby around the edges "

24/08/2016

For the amount we had paid whilst staying for a wedding, we expected a great deal more. The rooms were a good size, but most of the drinking glasses at the reception and in the room had finger or lipstick marks. There was also a snail slithering its way up a wall on the second floor (impressive effort for a snail) and cobwebs on the walls. Also there was a half deflated balloon hanging off of a fan in the ceremony room, just looked untidy.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us feedback regarding your most recent stay with us. I am disappointed to hear of your findings and have subsequently passed these housekeeping issues to our Head Housekeeper and have asked her to address these with her team. I apologise that you didn't find us at our usually high standard, and welcome you back again to allow us to show you our usual standard.

23/08/2016

Not often I am inclined to leave a negative review so let's start with a positive, the hotel looks lovely from the outside. That's where it ends,, turn round get back in your car and leave as fast as you can unless of course you are drawn to its run down, less than clean interior and beds that had seen better days a long time ago. Food was so nasty that breakfast was not included by choice and being charged twice was not an ideal scenario either

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review and for sharing your views from you past stay with us. I am delighted to hear that you liked the view of the hotel from outside and you was pleased upon your arrival. I am, on the other hand, disappointed to hear that you felt the interior didn't live up to your expectations. We are currently working through all our bedrooms, on an extensive updating project, and our new rooms look great! I am sorry to hear that you didn't find yours to be one of our recently refurbished rooms, however hope you will revisit soon to experience one of these. I apologise that you also found breakfast to be poor - this has been passed onto our Head Chef to address for future guests. Thank you again for taking the time to leave your feedback - we look forward to welcoming you again in the future.

"Think Fawlty Towers, and you're close. "

20/08/2016

My wife and I have just returned from a one night stay here. As we were attending a wedding, we called the week before to ask for an early check I and I offered to pay extra for this. I was advised to call the day before and this can be confirmed. That, I did, and was told that room 1 was not booked that evening and an early check in was absolutely fine. However, on arrival I explained that we have a room reserved and would like to check in. To which the lady on reception snorted to herself (almost breaking in to laughter) and said "I don't think so, not until 2pm". This went on for a few moments and after offering to show the call logs and even referenced the room I had been reserved she reluctantly allowed us to check in 30 minutes later. The room, if you have seen Harry Potter, you will understand where this is going. Our room (room 1) was under a staircase. You struggled to stand in the shower room for the slope of the ceiling. When people walked up or down the stairs I could probably tell you what size shoe they were wearing! It was loud and woke us up on several occasions The bedsheets were grubby, with what looked like moth holes in them. The towels were damp and hot water took a good 10 minutes to come through. The curtains were grubby, the mugs had been rinsed and left wet and you guessed it, grubby. All in all I appreciate this is an old building. It has character, however everything I have spoken about comes down to individuals. Rude welcoming, dirty sheets, damp towels. If you would like a taste of the real life Fawlty Towers, then go and stay. You will have a great time. If you prefer a little refinement and clean rooms that aren't located under the stairs, then book else where.

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your review. I am sorry to hear that your most recent stay with us wasn't a pleasant one from the start. We are often praised for the experience the staff provide our guests, therefore I am shocked and disappointed to hear that upon arrival, you found our Receptionist to be 'not so' pleasant. This has been fed back to your Reception Manager and we will speak with all our Reception Team to ensure that a pleasant greeting and helpful attitude is delivered. With regards to an early check in, we would always do our upmost to ensure this is a an option, however on occasions room do get booked - with check in then being 2:00pm. I fully appreciate that you had called and double-checked on numerous occasions and can only apologise that you were delayed in getting access to your room. I note your comments regarding room 1 and as you mentioned we are an old building with rooms or a variety of shapes and sizes. Room 1 is a standard double room, and although the Shower Room is partly under a staircase, the bedroom is not. I am very disappointed to hear that the bedding and towels were poor - I have contacted our Linen provider regarding this. I am sorry to hear that you felt your stay was disappointing, however I have spoken with all relevant Head of Departments to rectify these areas.

staff were wonderful, but general upkeep, tired decor, peeling wallpaper, stale odours, lack of breakfast items compared to advertised, evening meal was also lacking when several items on the menu were unavailable. rubbish in and around the garden areas, broken glass, bottle tops, dirty glasses. the buidling is stunning, same for the location, the owners need to invest some funds and make this place more memorable

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. I am very pleased to hear that you found our staff 'wonderful' - we are privileged to have a team of individuals who pride themselves on delivering great service. I have passed on your comments with regards to the menu items, and our Head Chef informs that he will keep a closer I on this. I am delighted to inform you that we are currently going through a general update and renovation, and this is well underway in a variety of areas within the hotel. Therefore we look forward to welcoming you to see the developments.

14/08/2016

Whenever I'm in Nottingham, which is quite often, I stay at Bestwood Lodge Hotel. It's a tranquil oasis in the heart of a country park with lovely walks yet a stone's throw from bus routes into the city. The staff are friendly, the rooms very well appointed, the food is exxcellient and altogether a great experience. I can thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone - I love it.

"Restaurant, and the little things, let down an otherwise reasonable hotel"

3
11/08/2016

One-night stay here, and room itself had no issues although was certainly on the cosy side, bathroom especially. Some minor housekeeping issues aside, this was everything we'd expect. Breakfast was just plain disappointing - several menu items missing and very little cold choice. Even tomato-sauce missing, and according to the waitress who we asked - "we haven't got any left in the hotel". We have raised these points with the hotel and received an amicable response, but to not mention them would be unfair.

The place has history and old world charm, but I thing it is a rip off. The fuction food prices were disgusting.9 salvers of sandwiches and hot nibbles for 50 people is a laugh. Go elsewhere I was embarrassed for the group and the hotel staff

08/08/2016

We found this place on late rooms and loved it. The building is amazing Victorian building and looks magnificent with quite a spacious car park. To reach the hotel is a bit of a mystery tour and despite going through a 'a dodgy' housing estate don't worry as you eventually reach Bestwood Country Park, go past the Fire HQ and out of nowhere the hotel appears. word of warning the speed bumps just before the Fire HQ are extremely vicious so recommend first gear otherwise you will do your car major damage. The staff were friendly and then you enter the bar area. Our bedroom was on the first floor and to reach the bedrooms you are overlooking the bar. The room was large, clean and comfortable (free wi-fi), good shower, full of character, but just needed a bit of modernising. We ate in the restaurant for dinner and was lovely food, well presented and delicious. Breakfast was nice with choice of 5/6 cereals and cooked items if you wished. Good for a base or business!

"Amazing building/location"

02/08/2016

The hotel was a hunting lodge so is an amazing building to look at tucked away in a country park. My room was huge, clean, with an excellent shower. Even though it had been 28 degrees that day the room had kept cool so I had a good night's sleep. The only slightly annoying thing was that the headboard hit the wall if you turned over in bed too fast. I didn't have breakfast at the hotel in the morning as I thought it was a bit expensive and got some snacks from Lidl which was about 1 mile away.

"Interesting place to stay "

31/07/2016

I stayed for one night for work and think some of the reviews here are a bit unfair. It's a very historical and interesting building. The room was very big and the bar was impressive and cosy. Staff friendly. Can see some people's point re it being tired in places but for the money I'm not sure what they expect. Only downsides is bed was a bit soft and the bacon at breakfast was stuck together. A bit of explanation of the breakfast routine by the host would have been good.

"Full of Character"

31/07/2016

We booked a room with a 4 poster bed, the bed was nice, but the rest of the furniture in the room was very standard and cheap looking, which spoiled the effect a bit. The room it self was charming and full of character with a small sitting room and a balcony which overlooked the gardens. The hotel itself was a fascinating building with lots of period features and historical references. We had dinner in the restaurant, which we enjoyed, but there was quite a limited choice. Restaurant staff we friendly and helpful, but seemed a bit inexperienced. The reception staff, on arriving and checking out, were not particularly friendly or helpful, but they did their job. I would definitely return to this hotel.

"Interesting Building, Friendly Staff"

26/07/2016

Stayed here for one night with family, and had two rooms. The reception staff were very helpful, although seemed to be doing several jobs at once. The rooms were quite spacious, and ours was clean, however, my daughters' room had half eaten biscuits in the side tables next to the bed, not sure how long they had been there. Beds were comfy, and our room had nice views of the park. We had a couple of drinks in the bar, which is a really impressive room, wood panelled with a galleried landing running around. Very nice for a drink in the evening - although we did have to search for the bar staff. Breakfast was OK, and the restaurant was a really lovely room. Would probably stay again

Haven't stopped here in the hotel. But have been several times for food and drink. For functions and social evenings. Beautiful place. Amazing food. Drinks are a little steep. But you can't put a price on the historic atmosphere. Great friendly staff who are always happy to help or answer any questions.

"Beautiful building set in a country park ."

4
25/07/2016

I was delighted to spend a night here in this stunning ancient building that dates back to 1364. It was originally a hunting lodge used by many early kings of England while hunting in Sherwood Forest . It is now a friendly ,comfortable and interesting hotel. The staff were friendly and very helpful , the rooms clean and comfortable and the breakfast delicious. The hotel is set in a picturesque country park . Sadly there is no lift up to the rooms , but then they didn't have lifts in the 1300's !!! The management have done their best by having a stair lift chair fitted up to the first floor, but be aware if your room is on the second floor you will have to climb a steep narrow set of stairs.

"Great Atmosphere in Lovely Surroundings."

13/07/2016

We got married in this place 7 years ago but, I dont hold it against the place!! We have been back several times since, the last time being last Saturday (9/7/16) for an overnight stay and evening meal. As usual the service and food were great. Breakfast is totally self service but, everything is well presented and avaliable in abundance. The evening meal in the restaurant was great and not over expensive for this type of setting. The general decor of this place IS dated but, I feel that is part of its charm. This building is OLD so, if you want "new paint" and a "fresh lovely appeal" dont book this place!! The rooms are clean and most are really spacious but, some are on the small side. We love this place cos its NOT modern is in a great setting and it has real charm.

"Wedding Guest"

11/07/2016

Recently came to Bestwood Lodge as a wedding guest and was so disappointed, the building itself is beautiful but needs some serious maintenance. The chapel was in serious need of updating the decor was awful. To begin with the bride was late to her own ceremony as her room wasnt ready when it was supposed to be which held her up getting ready. The young guy on the bar was so rude he told me I couldnt use the lounge bar as the garden bar was available for the wedding. I advised that I had stood down there for 10 minutes waiting for someone to come and serve me so had no choice but to go to that bar. He then went on to tell me that 6 staff had rang in sick and they were under staffed. This is not my problem I was there to enjoy a wedding the lack of staff was not my problem. Again the garden room is in serious need of decorating literally a lick of paint would do the world of good. The food was awful. I had the goat cheese tart for starter this was so dry I couldn't eat it, for main I had the chicken this was ok but we waited a good 20 minutes for the veg and potatoes to be served by this time the chicken was cold. For dessert I had the apple pie which came out again another 20 minutes after everyone else and looked as though it had been sat there for a week the custard was almost set. We then had another run it with another member of staff this time an older woman. A guest on the table where we were seated was waiting for a cup of tea which was promised to him a good time before. The woman walked passed and I said excuse me to which she replied WHAT!!! I couldn't believe it. Then onto the evening do this was ok the buffett food was really lovely and eventual a decent staff member arrived. We assumed he was agency as he had all the correct etiquette, was polite and quickly took away any empty plates and glasses. Overall I came away feeling disappointed as on first approach the venue looked perfect however the lack of staff, the one's who were actual there were rude, disgusting food and its dire need for a good revamp I would definitely would not recommend this as a wedding venue. If I was the bride of this wedding I would of been heart broken such a disappointment.

Everything was perfect, staff were very friendly and food was to die for! Facilities were brilliant, room was clean and had everything we needed. Stayed for breakfast in the morning and again it was wonderful! We cannot thank the staff enough for providing a fantastic service from booking right through to our big day!! Highly recommended!

"Birthday party"

09/07/2016

Attended my sisters 50th birthday party at this lovely old hunting lodge set in acres of lush gardens and parkland. Lots of original features in the downstairs rooms giving a sense of the history of the lodge. The [party room was big enough for the 60 or so guests and some spilled out into a comfortable bar area where it was quite enough to talk. Buffet of sandwiches and hot snacks were really tasty and did not disappoint. Plenty of staff around only too willing to help. Good evening has by all.

"Lovely hide away"

23/06/2016

We stayed for one night in June as a stop over before a wedding the next day. Lovely character building set back in lush green gardens and friendly accommodating staff. We had a twin room and the staff were great. We ordered a take away and the staff provided us with cutlery and plates. We couldn't ask for more. The room was clean bearing in mind this is a listed building. It was hot at night but we took a chance and opened the window. We were pleasantly surprised to find the insects had not invaded. We would definitely come again and bring the whole family.

"Unless you must...."

18/06/2016

Attended wedding at this hotel recently and it was massive disappointment. Reception was organised so badly that reminded me book-case stories of “how bad management can ruin your best day”. Not sure if any kind of management exists in this place as it was seriously understaffed and appeared disorganised. Staff in need of serious custoremer service skills! Guests had to wait for up to 30 min to be served drinks and food buffet was … well, edible (possibly selection of frozen food from local corner shop). Not to be recommended at any cost!

"you could 'feel' the history"

4
17/06/2016

the minuses were that you could not brush your teeth or wash your face at the sink because of the glass shelf over the sink basin that prevented you from doing this..You had to run the bath hot water tap for up to 5 mins to get hot water at times. The two chairs in the room were uncomfortable but we just went and sat down in the bar area instead! The pluses were that it wasn't a bland modern room. The hotel was full of history and character. The room(Queen Mary) was a large room.It was a quiet room(however there was no wedding/function on during our stay) Easy to park outside hotel.(no hassle). However do not expect a perfect looking room but it was clean(bed linen, bathroom and carpet were spotless)

"Nice place to stay and great to eat"

15/06/2016

Really enjoyed our stay here, had the King Edward suite with a four poster bed as a goodwill upgrade as we had to wait 15 minutes to check in, which wasn't a problem as we sojourned to the wood panelled bar. We opted to dine there too and the menu was excellent. Nice atmosphere too. A great retreat to escape to, not really handy for the centre of Nottingham and borders some of the less nicer suburbs of the city.

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. We are delighted to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us, and took advantage of the upgrade provide by our team. We welcome you back to the hotel whenever you revisit Nottingham.

"Absolutely dreadful"

1
12/06/2016

Restaurant unavailable for evening meal, breakfast served late with whole section of the menu missing, bar snack menu poor. Kept awake by a wedding party. No hot water in the shower. No chair at the desk in the room - only thing to sit on was the bed. Just plain awful from start to finish. Don't know how they can justify such a high price when so many facilities are unavailable or missing.

Having to write this review a second time as my first review was removed as I'd apparently not eaten or slept overnight here, I did both so unsure why it's was removed? I'll just paste the previous review now that's been cleared up as our complaint is still outstanding. f I could have give this hotel zero stars I would have. The hotel has the makings of a great wedding venue however the manager is amongst the most incompetent men I've ever met. From not having enough bar staff to serve guest to a shoddy table service where my brother, cousin and best man had to serve wine at the sit down meal as our guests were buying bottles of wine even though we'd paid for wine to be served during the service the management was dire. There is a host of other issues we had around the management of the day but what is more infuriating is the managers refusal call me to handle our complaint and the fact that his response to our small claim is quite frankly full of lies. It's such a work of make belief that the manager should consider a career in Fiction writing. I'd hoped that our compliant would have been resolved by now and I'd not have the need to write this review but after dealing with the manager for 4 months and after he's accused me of lying, I see no option. Simon, if you'd have called me like I'd asked in February, we'd probably had this resolved by now but you chose not to. Good luck if you've got a wedding booked here with around 100 guests as you're going to need it.

"You Can't Beat Character"

4
06/06/2016

My brother, Mike, and I booked this on line just from the photos on the Best Western website. We like quirky and character and this hotel has it in droves. It is a little out of the way, our satnav led us in a merry chase finding it, but it was worth it. We had a room with twin beds, very large and clean if a bit dated as one would expect in a building that was once a royal hunting lodge dating from the time of Charles II. The beds were rather small, but comfortable. The ensuite was clean and modern although the plumbing was a bit eccentric (Hint: Run the hot water in the bathtub before turning on the shower, it takes a while to warm up.) There is no lift in this hotel and the stairs can be a bit narrow and steep. Pack an overnight bag since hauling luggage up them can be an adventure. The Foyer Bar is very comfortable and the food is excellent and moderately priced. But it is the building and the grounds that make this place wonderful. If you like character, this is the place for you.

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
I am delighted to hear that you enjoyed your recent stay with us and would like to thank you for sharing your experience on here. We get lots of feedback about our stunning building and how tranquil the setting is with us being situated in a Country Park. As mentioned in your review, with us being an older building, dating back many years, we are a little 'quirky' and things such as having a lift are unavailable. We happily provide assistance to guests that require help and have a stair-lift to the first floor, to make things easier. We love that you enjoyed your stay and that you would recommend us.

"Lack of staff and food"

2
03/06/2016

This is a lovely old Victorian lodge building. We were staying the Sunday night and I phoned first to check on evening meal availability and was told there was a wedding on and there would be bar snacks but with a couple of choices available from the restaurant menu. However, at about 6.45pm there were eight of us in the bar with a couple of people from the wedding, all wanting drinks, but no barman in sight. It took ages to get drinks, we then found out that six staff had phoned in to say they were not coming in, so four staff were running the reception, the wedding catering and the bar! There was no receptionist, I ended up answering the phone to a prospective future bride! And another guest was voted by six of us to act as barman. Then barman turned up. He wasn't happy, WE weren't happy! We enquired of him regarding food, he said 'have you booked?' No, of course not as the restaurant was closed that night. In the end he and the overworked chef produced some excellent food for us. However, a couple who turned up later having driven from Cornwall got absolutely nothing to eat except crisps! I have to say, the barman and chef did a stirling job, but 'The Management" we're nowhere to be seen and in my opinion are letting their staff and their hotel guests down. Also, following morning, went to breakfast at 8am and the hot buffet food had not been put out. We asked for a cafetière of coffee, it was luke warm, waitress said it should be hot as it came from the hot water machine! Looking back, it was a bit of an adventure, but I will not be repeating it...

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. I am very disappointed to hear your findings and have spoken at great length with the Duty Manager and staff who were on that day/evening. I am, however, happy to hear that when you received food it was excellent, and have therefore passed this onto the kitchen team. It is always disappointing to hear feedback that is negative, however we always take feedback on board and do our utmost to improve our experience for each of our guests.

"Very tired"

2
02/06/2016

This is a Victorian hotel. Staff are very good, but they are working in a hotel that is very tired. Sure, you can retain the character of an old building, and communal areas do this, but the rooms need some TLC. You would not expect modern as it is a Victorian building, but the room was dark, cold, cheap tatty furniture, poorly proportioned bathroom, cracked rattling sash windows. Just not very welcoming. Has room service and the food was nice, but not a luxury hotel.

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. I am sorry to hear that recent stay wasn't a great one. As you mention, we are an old Victorian building, therefore have to carefully renovate and update, whilst maintaining the character of the building and its surroundings. With this in mind, I am delighted to inform you that we are currently going through a renovation and update of our bedrooms, with the current rooms looking great! We are continuing the renovations throughout and hope you will revisit to see the developments.

"Understaffed, poor service"

30/05/2016

We were there as part of a wedding party. All our food requirements were on a pre-order basis. We sat on a table of eight, five guest received their main course but three of us sat there without are main course. After around ten minutes wait we enquired about the whereabouts of our main course, five minutes later it came out. Stone cold. We ask to speak to someone but all we got was a sorry and a plate of cold food. At no time was an effort made to rectify our plates of stone cold food.

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for your recent comments. I am very disappointed to hear that you found you recent visit to a wedding here at the hotel disappointing. I am looking into the reasons why these occurred and will ensure that they are rectified, and improved, for future guests. "Short but enjoyable stay"

Quite an impressive entrance to the hotel. It is an old building but welcoming. Our room was on the first floor where you walk along a balcony type corridor which overlooked the bar area. Staff were friendly and knowledgeable, food was very good and the rooms were warm and comfortable. Lots of nice touches in the room too, bottle of water, tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits and normal little extras in the bathroom. It has lovely grounds where you can have a nice walk, good sized bar area and large car park. Would happily stay here again.

"Neutral review, not blown away, but not put off."

23/05/2016

We stayed here as a a couple on last Friday and Saturday night in the Alexander Room. We were attending a wedding on the Saturday afternoon. First things first, access is through a housing estate, so don't think you've got lost, but singage is not the greatest. The Speed humps are huge, my car scrapped the exhaust on every one, so be aware that are lowered or sports cars need to be very careful (this is not the hotels fault though) Now to the hotel, it's 150 years old, wooden panelling, creaky floor boards, qwerky layouts, tends to be darker in decor than modern hotels, but full of character. It would be very easy to find many many faults. If you're looking for Neutral colours, LED lights, clean crisp lines, lifts etc then this is not the place for you. We arrived in the dark so very little of the location and building when we arrived, but on the Saturday morning when we looked out the window, it was lovely to see a large lawn and a wall of trees wrapping around the hotel. Breakfast was good, few minor points, baked beans were not Heinz (I did ask, so did not have them), Brown sauce was not HP, Tomato Sauce was not Heinz (or Stokes), these are the sort of things that even road side food vendors know makes a difference. On the plus side, the poached Eggs were lovely, Tea was served in proper pots and was unlimited. I then helped my friend set up for his wedding reception, which the hotel staff were also there doing their bits and bobs. The room looked lovely, with the bay windows and panelled ceiling. Here's a gripe, the filter under the plug hole to the shower was blocked, very nearly causing the shower tray to overflow, I cleaned this out myself, I did mention to the manager later that day and he did confirm it should have been checked, so I doubt that will happen again. Our room had a great view, lovely refurbished showeroom/toilet. With a Mustard coloured carpet, the bed was nice and big with white linen on. What let it down was the rather tatty furniture, functional, matching in style but to be fair, the sort of thing you'd expect to see in a 1980's student rental. Now to the wedding, there was 2 weddings in the hotel chapel on the same day, the first one was running late forcing my friends to delay thier own wedding, telling the bride to go around the block again is not something she needed the stress of on her big day, OK it could have all gone smoothly like clockwork, but there should have been a larger window of time between the 2 weddings. There was also a shortage of chairs in the chapel (but was quickly resolved) The reception itself went well, although the service of food seemed delayed, (possibly knock on from the other wedding party running late?), the beef was so tender and tasty, but the vegetables were less inspiring. Dessert (Lemon Tart thingy) top notch. Bar prices seemed very fair £3.95 for a pint of Lager, but the price of a half seemed a touch too much at £2.10 (=£4.20 a pint) only pennies I know. Breakfast on Sunday was a relaxed affair, with no pressure to leave, even though we chatted with friends until nearly 11am , (booking out time). Worth mentioning there is Free Wifi, but it's not super quick. The hotel seemed to be getting hoovered a lot before the event, but there were still areas of housekeeping that could be improved, dust on panelling, picture frames etc, but does this add to the qwerkiness maybe? Overall, we would go back, but we would not go back just because of the hotel, it would be to see our friends who live up that way. The group could spend a millions pounds on the venue, replacing the rotten window frames and single glazing, slapping white paint over the panelling etc, but that's what gives it the character. Best Western seen to have many older style hotels, I'm sure we'll stay in a few more over the years. So there you go. Bit of a mixed review.

We stayed here to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary as we celebrated our wedding reception here. It was lovely to be back, We had a fantastic room with views over the hotel grounds. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant. The staff were all lovely, We will definitely have lovely memories of a special time for us

"Great Sunday Lunch"

15/05/2016

We regularly visit Bestwood Lodge for our Sunday Lunch, with the lodge being set in Bestwood country park is of the beaton track so unless you know the area you would not know its there. The hotel has loads of caracter and history, and we always receive a warm welcome. The food is always very good and the staff are very pleasant, although it's a cavary you are served with your starter and desert and the tables always look very nice because of the use of fresh linen and napkins. We have always found that it is Google value for money.

Stayed in the King James suite which was perfectly situated for a quiet room on the second floor at the end of one if the wings. Maybe a little tired but character of the property and location outdone the odd bit of shabby. Main bedroom is well sized with ample wardrobe and a four poster with two smaller rooms off it being a small study with fresh and chair and a lounge area (tea and coffee making in this room). The bathroom is large but quite basic and of the main room also. Breakfast was buffet style and had a good selection. Nice to see the meat had some colour (and meat in it) rather than some of the anemic and bland offerings that are too often found. No hot water left on a Saturday night before going out was not appreciated and a very surly greeting at booking in would be my only negatives. The setting and grounds are beautiful and worth taking a few minutes to walk and appreciate.

My Husband and I stayed here for our friends wedding and it was a lovely hotel and situated in a fantastic place. Staff were very helpful, polite and friendly and the gardens were well kept. Our room was spacious but the bathroom was a bit of a squeeze, however had everything we needed but was a little snug. Our bed was the most amazing bed we've ever slept in and the linen was fresh, clean and cosy. We decided on 4 stars rather than 5 as we came across a few 'minor' issues but not really complaints but we thought you'd appreciate the feedback; our room was very clean however just to the side of the wardrobe there was a ledge and it was extremely dusty (photo uploaded) we also left a little note saying that they may want to dust there! ;-) we weren't sure if you are aware that if your key card is put near a contactless bank card or mobile phone then it stops working, we didn't until it happened and caused a bit of an issue (got it sorted, but just a bit of a FAFF and could have been prevented) perhaps a brief explanation of this to guests upon arrival. Overall everything else fab, would return. We really enjoyed our breakfast too.

Beautiful grounds but not a great night sleep. The walls were paper thin and we could here the guests next door. The shower was not hot not great. Breakfast was served late although it is quoted to be 8 am. As it was a buffet it came out in drips and drabs without jam or marmite? Very odd. I didn't feel comfortable at the hotel.

We visited here as part of a short break in Nottingham. Really enjoyed our stay and as our first time at the hotel we weren't disappointed. Service was good and well attended. Food was very good, but we couldn't understand why there were little diners! Good food, good service, good location. We will certainly visit again. Our room was pleasant, just a shame there's no lift, but the young man who carried our luggage up was very pleasant and informative. Highly recommended!

"Lovely setting"

28/04/2016

This is an old country house hotel that would have been magnificent in it's day. However, it is now quite tired and in need of some TLC, but the upkeep must cost a fortune. We stayed one night whilst visiting family and friends and it worked very well for us as we all met up in the lounge/bar and had a good catchup with lots of people. But, if we'd gone on a short break there, we would have been disappointed with the room. It was a lovely size for our family with 4 proper beds and had a lovely big bathroom, but was in poor decorative order. The service was very slow and almost non-existent at the bar and at breakfast, but the young servers were trying their best, there just wasn't enough of them! We waited over an hour for our bar meal at night and then they said that we couldn't have what we had ordered as they had run out, so had to choose something else. By the time it had come, my appetite had gone! And, I never got the glass I asked for at breakfast!

"Work Trip"

27/04/2016

The hotel is in a very nice setting for sure, little bit dated on the outside and a bit tired too, the hotel inside is a little tired in areas too but overall a nice hotel. The bar area is quite nice and has interesting features, shower room in room I was allocated (16) was very small and others in our group said same on there's. The hotel is a fair bit out of the way so transport to anywhere would be needed.

"Faulty towers"

1
24/04/2016

Attended a family wedding and this place was SO bad it was actually comical. The funniest part is how much they charge for this awful experience. Our room had to have the seat changed as the spindles were broke (My disabled, elderly mother could have seriously been injured). I went to sit on my bed but got a shock as it felt more like being on a shuggy boat. I literally had to use pillars to wedge the bed in one place. There's cob webs everywhere, flaking plaster and a stair lift that would be useless should there be a fire. Breakfast... Food had been left standing for hours, freezing cold, no cups, cold coffee, sour fruit and warm milk. I felt like we were in a scene from faulty towers, the swipe key would not work to my room and apparently it's because mobil phones interfere with them ( I don't use Mobil phone??) Up and down the stairs I went. Not quite the relaxing weekend I had in mind. On the bright side I left and am now in the comfort of my own home with a lovely hot cup of coffee.

I have visited this hotel on a regular basis when I used to work in Nottingham. The staff were always very friendly and whilst there is a lack of food menu options I.e. bar menu or restaurant the food is excellent. On the odd occasion I had a problem with a room, it was always dealt with quickly and in one instance I was upgraded to the bridal suite!! The grounds are stunning on a summers evening and it really a beautiful place to stay??

Attending a family wedding , paid extra to upgrade room , paint falling of wall , phone not working etc. This hotel is in need of some serious refurbishment .Breakfast was absolutely awful , food & coffee stone cold , fruit was sour , cheap yogurts . If you want some advise don't waste your money staying here .Couple of months ago , stayed at premier inn , far superior .

"Tired and poor service"

22/04/2016

When visiting family we stayed at Bestwood Lodge. I have given this review as the hotel could be made so nice. The hotel is an old hunting lodge and has great character. It's set in lovely grounds surrounded by a large woodland with lots of paths to walk along. Our room was a family room which allowed pets. It was roomy enough and fairly comfortable but very tired in decor. It was reasonably clean and had good facilities. The hotel in general was tired and needs money spending on it. It wasn't particularly clean. The food was poor quality and the service was poor. The bar was never attended so if we wanted a drink or order food, we had to search for someone to serve us. The staff were not smiley and a bit standoffish. The lady on reception was pleasant though. We did enjoy our stay due to it being pet friendly and in a nice location but couldn't recommend it for cleanliness or quality of food.

GeneralManager17, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay. I am delighted to hear that you and your party enjoyed staying with us and that you took full advantage of our pet friendly hotel. I am disappointed, however, to hear that you found our service poor, as this in an area where we usually excel. I have, therefore, spoken with all staff on the importance of smiling, and being visable for you in the bar area. We are currently undergoing a refurbishment with bedrooms and public areas being upgraded, in-keeping with the 'hunting lodge' background. Therefore, we hope you will revisit in the future to see how the hotel is developing. We love our location, and are pleased that you did too. Perfect for a walk in the acres of parkland and for a relaxing stay. We thank you again for taking the time to leave your comments and I have fed these back to all relevant departments to improve.

Arrived at Bestwood Lodge and was so impressed with the appearance both inside and out, beautiful place, had gone for a meal with a friend. Was a little surprised how few people was there, the service was excellent, however the food was pretty bad, cold, tasteless and the presentation did nothing to tempt the taste buds. Would never visit again

GeneralManager17, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for leaving your feedback. We are happy to hear that your initial impressions of our stunning building were positive and are delighted that this did not disappoint when you entered our foyer lounge. We are pleased that the service your received was excellent, however disappointed to hear that you felt the food quality was poor. I have passed this feedback to the Head Chef, who will work with the kitchen team to look at how we can improve. We are saddened to hear that despite the location, building, interior and service, you wouldn't visit again. We would love for you to reconsider and join again in the future to see how our menu develops.

"Quality of food served at a wedding"

1
19/04/2016

The starter was a green thin liquid which I guess was supposed to be soup. It had no taste and so it was anyone's guess as to what type of soup it was meant to be. The main course was chicken with roast vegetables and stuffing balls served plated up and with gravy on plus a large yorkshire pudding covering the top. When I asked for the vegetarian option I was kept waiting for around 10 minutes whilst the waitress went to check with the chef. Eventually I was told there is no vegetarian option. I settled for vegetables only, which were served dry as "they had no vegetarian gravy" By the time I was given my main course, everyone else on my table had finished their's. The sweet, a cheesecake, was fine but I had already decided that I would not be dining in the hotel's restaurant any time soon.

Grey dated bathroom suite in Superior room! Noise from wedding disco horrendous, should have just joined the party! The highlight of the stay was seeing the bride. Would not stay there again at half the price. Beautiful country park, excellent for walking.

GeneralManager17, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to leave your feedback. All comments from our guests are welcomed and help us improve for future guests. We can only apologise for you being situated near to the wedding, with you hearing noise from the disco, on your recent stay. We endeavour to place guests away from the noise as much as possible, however apologise that on this occasion this didn't happen. With reference to the bathroom, we are currently undergoing a renovation of bedrooms and bathrooms, with the room you stayed in being one of those due to be renovated. Therefore, I apologise that on this occasion you were unhappy with your stay. All your feedback has been passed onto the Management Team, and we have spoken with the relevant reservations staff to reiterate the importance of placing guests in rooms away from any disco noise, as this is our policy. 17/04/2016

Beautiful setting and a lovely time of the year to visit. However.... our room, and oddly more so the bathroom smelt of boiled cabbage. Still, it was just for one night and everything looked clean and the beds felt comfortable. All was good till we spotted the mould on the (dry) brown bread sandwiches at the buffet and the silverfish in the bathroom when we got back. Not good. To finish on a night note, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly but for the reasons above, I wouldn't rush back. It would be so easy to tackle stale bread and cleaner bathrooms!

"Overnight Stay whilst on Business "

06/04/2016

I've stayed here before. I'm sure they've renovated or smartened the place. I only realised I stated before when I walked through the door into the bar area !!! WOW !!! It's an impressive building in a great location. If you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't know it was there. But it's extremely handy for motorways and Nottingham Centre or outskirts. The food is excellent and the service professional and prompt. (The guy on reception kept burping as he checked me .... He must have just enjoyed the food...lol). All good. Highly recommended. Great Wedding venue I'm sure !!!

Whilst not a 5 or 4 star hotel (and it doesn't try to be) this hotel has quirky character and superb service. Yes it needs a lot of money spent on it as it is an old hunting lodge which has many character features which have been tastefully updated if not a lot altered since it was built but it is really a fun place. Excellent value for money - frankly cheap given the room we had - and a place with personality which Premier Inn and Holiday Inn cannot offer. I had a slight problem with my room but it was changed without question - superb. Meal was excellent. Wine was really good value. I loved the place as it was honest and genuine. Don't stay here if you want London pretension but do if you can take rough with the smooth. Not sure it will survive as I cannot see the sums adding up in February/March but Xmas and the summer must be magical (perfect for weddings) as the setting is superb. Wonderful lounge and gardens. If you want something a bit different but don't expect the earth stay here. The service and ambiance was outstanding, the food all right and the rooms very clean and tidy. Buy the best room in the place and you will be happy. Don't worry won't bankrupt you. Forget central Nottingham and accept a place which is just different. Will stay again as it was so genuine and just really nice. Well done!

"Wonderful Wedding Weekend"

3
16/03/2016

Our overall impression of our weekend was that we had a wonderful time. We were staying at the Hotel for the duration of a wedding. And, before I get stuck in, I would just say that we would stay here again as we did enjoy our stay. Our room was No 20 - at the end of the first floor. Our room was clean and the bed was comfy. The Chamber Maid here does a fantastic job. The room is definitely showing signs of needing a thorough re-furb. The décor is dated as is the furniture and the soft furnishings. The bathroom was basic and freezing cold due to there being no heating in this part of the room. The room itself was warm enough. A point of health and safety in this room was the toppling wardrobe. If you were a little over enthusiastic opening the wardrobe doors the robe topples!!! Also in our room we had a hole (quite a sizeable hole) in the radiator cover which had clearly been in this condition for some time. The Hotel was bound to be busy this weekend as they had two weddings to manage but we feel, as did many of our friends, that the venue was somewhat understaffed in all areas, namely reception, bar and breakfast room. The breakfast room on both Saturday and Sunday morning needed cleaning before service began - one word, CARPETS! During breakfast there was a shortage of most things that your visitors required (plates, bread for toasting, butter and spreads, readily available fried eggs) and tables weren't cleared/laid - but this is down to staffing levels. Also we discovered that if you wanted a fried egg that you had to specifically ask for it. It was then cheerfully forthcoming. The staff were very helpful but badly managed. The wedding breakfast was lovely (although late due to over commitment on the part of the Hotel trying to run two weddings at the same time) - the food was tasty and plentiful. This hotel is beautiful and has got potential to be outstanding given some investment in refurbishment and increased staff levels. Fantastic venue, grounds and helpful and friendly staff.

"Wouldn't go out my way to go here"

15/03/2016

Went here for a wedding. Food was basic, service wasn't that good. It's a wedding and they had one bar staff on at a time. There was no heating on through the day in winter. Everywhere was so cold even the toilets. The staff were helpful enough. The drinks at the bar was so expensive, everybody was complaining about the prices, think that was something to do with it being a best western hotel. Disco and the dj at night were the best thing out of it all. I wouldnt go here if I didn't have to but it was ok.

"My favourite wedding venue"

10/03/2016

Witnessed many weddings here and in my experience, it's a fab little Wedding venue where the staff strive, each time, to give the bride & groom the best day possible. The chapel is beautiful, the grounds are divine, the service is second to none & the food is lovely.

I visited here for a mothers day lunch, the three course carvery I thought was good value, the staff were nice and friendly .I had soup starter which was barely warm enough, and again the carvery wasnt the hottest, even my wife's sticky toffee pudding wasnt hot , I cant understant how the most basic thing can be missed. Its a shame because the food was tasty enough. Thankyou

This is a beautiful hotel in a magnificent setting. Far enough away from the busy City to be in the countryside yet only a stone's throw away from the heart of business world and highlights of Nottingham. Steeped in history back to King Edward 111 it exudes quality and class. Sadly we were attending the funeral of a dear friend, but the environment and the helpful staff made it that much more bearable.

"Very comfortable for a one night stay. wonderful location"

25/02/2016

Allocated Room 11, which was large and airy, but also pleasantly warm enough. Good beds, and everything you need for a comfortable stay. A pity that some details are left without attention - such as the curtains, which need to be re-hung on the track, but all was quite clean. Staff very helpful (once they eventually managed to find our reservation), and bar meal was perfectly acceptable. Breakfast in the morning all very hot and tasty - except the scrambled eggs, which are to be avoided at all costs. Beautiful grounds for walking in, and overall the location set in a big country park is idyllic. Quiet and peaceful setting, Would stay there again if in the area.

Ordered lunch off a decent varied menu. Wanted meat free so ordered veggie burger s. Was told ages later the chef had cooked meat burger and veggie option unavailable. Not a great veggie selection . took ages and we left without eating. Really unimpressed Really nice surroundings. Could do with a make over and heating . Staff pleasant but not particularly interested that we d sat some considerable time and then had no meal after going there for lunch. Disappointed

I stayed here while my sister was giving birth in the nearby hospital, so this was a convenient location that provided a lot of rest and relaxation in between visits. My partner and I enjoyed several long walks on and around the beautiful grounds, and the restaurant food was both decent and affordable.

"A Brilliant Stay"

05/02/2016

My Wife and I recently had a 2 night stay at this hotel. On arrival we were disappointed with our allocated room but a request to the 2 pleasant and helpful ladies on reception resulted in our move to a far superior room. We had dinner in the Restaurant both nights. The food was excellent with a good selection of dishes and was very reasonably priced, the waitresses were very efficient and most cheerful. Our room, and the hotel in general, was very well appointed and very clean. The buildings and location were amazing. The only downside was the breakfast buffet, do it yourself tea and coffee from sachets and lack of food and what was available, although good quality, was luke warm.

We came to a joint 50th / 18th party here last night and although the venue is superb we just couldn't get served at the bar... not enough staff and the staff that were on were queuing to use the one till. My son waited 1 hour to get served. Such a shame but it gas really put me off this venue.

I must say our room was really lovely but I have never experienced a breakfast like it first there were no cups then we didn't have any bowls no bacon no eggs no juice no hot water in fact unless we asked for breakfast items we didn't get them, I work away from home on a regular basis and never have I experienced anything quiet like this .stunning venue, lovely rooms, but the service is not good.

"Get the bar sorted"

2
31/01/2016

We attended Bestwood Lodge for a joint 50th and 18th birthday party, the venue was a good size with various rooms leading off the bar area. When I say bar area it's a room with a a very small bar at one end which for most of the night was 6 deep with queuing customers.. The bar only hand one till and one pump per beer/lager which meant even with an average 3 staff on duty the waiting time time was 20+ minutes per round, this resulted in a huge amount of frustration by all the guests which was a shame and took the gloss of a great party. it not rocket science that additional pumps would result in faster service and no doubt more profits, I know of various guest who just gave up queuing !! PS I don't blame the bar staff they worked their socks off all night

Beautiful place great setting lovely food Such a shame that it's run by incompetence Bridal party stayed night before had to clear up venue from the weeding fare held weekend before. linen had to be brought in by taxi. Following morning (day of the weeding) bridal party are told they are not on the list for breakfast? 90 guests arrive 1 yes only 1 bar staff the best man went behind the bar and helped out serving 90 guests for a 3 coursee meal 4waiting staff grooms brother and nephew had to help serve the wine that was part old the package 32 mins from first to last main served The rest of the night was fantastic great DJ fabulous food and plenty of it for the evening buffet Breakfast the following day had to make 3 requests for cups and bowls then ran out of bacon and eggs took 10 mins to replenish In there defence the staff were as helpful and present but not enough of them por poor management. Booked a year in advance should have been ready

"Stunning place to stay"

12/01/2016

Spent a fantastic night at this historic hotel. Spacious car park, stunning bar area and very large, comfortable bedroom. The decor dates back to the 17th century, I believe, and the oak wood panelling, gallery overlooking the bar area, high ceilings and ornate coving are simply charming and the whole place has a regal feel about it. I must admit it was extremely quiet and I only saw 2 members of staff, both of whom were very polite and helpful. The freshly cooked breakfast was probably the best breakfast I have ever had. All in all, I would recommend this hotel to everyone, and if you are looking for a place to get married, Bestwood Lodge Hotel would be hard to beat.

"A beautiful place."

11/01/2016

Stayed here over the New Year with one of my daughters..Loved it, the building and history is wonderful, I have studied it a lot. This was the second time we have stayed here and are already booked up again for the end of the year. We found the staff very friendly and helpful... Bestwood park itself really is quite Magickal, lots of walks through the woods, pretty muddy but that was the fun of it. I highly recommend this hotel, especially if you have an interest in History and/or the paranormal.

Stayed here with a group of friends for the new year 2015/2016. Really enjoyed the stay and impressed with the staff. However if you're into modern contemporary, instant service, luxery don't stay here as you'll be disappointed.

"I've already booked my next visit."

I'm now in my 26th year of visiting this hotel so I guess that pretty much says it all. I had another enjoyable stay with lovely friendly staff, excellent service and fabulous breakfasts watching the sunrise over the country park. Although the staff were busy over the New Year period, nothing was too much trouble. The room was clean and tidy, ditto the bathroom. Tea and coffee making facilities and biscuits are provided in the room. The rooms don't feel cramped, there is a desk and a seat as well as the usual bedroom furniture. I've already booked my next visit.

Historical hotel and as you would expect is out of date but this just adds to the ambience. Nice room fantastic grounds and affordable on a budget. If you want a romantic hotel stay you can't go wrong here the breakfast is table service and very nice too.

Came to a Dinner/Dance last fri night, while the hotel is nice and our room was very nice the service for the meal was very very bad we sat down at 7 and some starters came about 8.40 the last sweets came about 10.30 no condimonts on tables no ordered wine cold food the list is endless, no bar staff to serve drinks, on saying all of this we all had a very good time because we all made the best of it we will not be returning which is a shame because the group has been coming for years

This is a grand Tudor design hotel located in woodland so don't be alarmed when the sat Navigation leaves you 3 miles away in housing estate, just keep driving. The rooms are clean and comfortable and the area is quiet. It has free parking and free internet.

"A bit of a disappointment "

Visited this hotel whilst on buisness and was very impressed by the overall look and feel of the place however this was very short lived. The room was nice and well laid out but on my first attempt at a shower the water stopped as soon as the neighbouring room started running a bath. I therfore had to wait for the spluttering shower head to finish rinsing the shampoo out of my hair. The plumbing in general was very poor and I often would have to leave the taps running and go about my business until any hot water would come out. The walls were also very poor at noise cancelling, I would hear my neighbours TV all night long and then the staff setting up the breakfast room at about 6:30 in the morning. I also ordered an expensive duck meal to my room and was very disappointed. It was completely overcooked and dried out and made me think of eating an old slipper. I therefore satisfied myself with the scotch egg and heritage veg, vowing never to eat in the restaurant for the rest of my visit. Also beware of the resident artists as thay may spring an elderly choir on you barring you from your room, although this was more charming than a nuisance.

Well I picked this one for three colleagues to stay while on business. We had a great time dinner was outstanding and we all will be back for another visit. The staff was very helpful when needed. We never saw Robin or his marry men, but did find a golden place to rest our heads.

I have stayed at this hotel a few times over the past 5 years as it is convenient for my business and it has always been adequate for that purpose. I have to say that I have seen a definite improvement all round over the past year and would probably return even if my visits the following day were further afield. .

"Great carvery"

We enjoyed an excellent carvery lunch here recently. We were impressed with the friendliness of all members of staff who were welcoming, attentive and had smiles! The food was delicious, well presented and in our opinion well cooked. Great choice of veg and giant Yorkshire puddings. We would have welcomed a slightly bigger dessert choice. A lovely building and plenty of car parking. Great venue for a family event.

"80th birthday lunch, what a sham"

11/10/2015

Booked this venue for 26 friends and family to help celebrate Dad's 80th birthday. Deposit paid in July, visited venue last week to finalise menu and organised birthday cake and prosecco for a toast. On arrival we were in the bar area which was pleasant, but small. The service was very slow with only 1 person serving, there were no clean glasses: dirty ones were taken off the bar, rinsed out and drinks served in them. We were taken into the restaurant and had 3 tables-2 for 8 & 1for 10. There was a jug of water, Orange and 1bottle of red wine per table. I had to ask for bottles of white wine we had ordered. There was no menu and then no staff. I went to find the menus and a waitress came over to our tables with them, but they were no correct as dad had ordered specific items as well as requests for Turkey and salmon to be available on the variety. The menus were taken away and redone, still incorrect. Bread was put on the tables. We then waited at least 20minutes before being asked for starters' orders. When it arrived it was in relays, first soup then about 10 minutes later prawn cocktail. Lemon sorbet had been requested by dad as a refresher-which we waited for whilst the variety was being set up. I eventually went into the kitchen to ask what we needed to do to be served. About half an hour later a server arrived and we went for the variety. There was no mustard, Apple sauce or mint sauce (beef and lamb and pork were on carvery). No cruit was at the tables and had to be asked for. The service was terrible-3 waitresses who didn't seem to have a clue how to take order or wait tables. I eventually went to reception to ask for April who dad had confirmed everything with to complain. At no point were we asked if things were ok and there did not seem to be any supervisor or anyone in charge. Sweets arrived in relays: Apple pie first with a confusion by waiting staff 're ice cream, custard and at one point a bowl of strawberries arrived the guests who ordered Eton mess had a 30 minute wait, when served it turned out to be strawberry and cream, no meringue. Overall it was a complete sham. April left before sorting out the problems and assured me 'the other manager would be along to help soon'. Lastly the birthday cake was put on huge plates with no plates to eat it off, so I took it all back to recovery area to asking be done again. The prosecco was poured successfully at a corkage charge of £10 per bottle. After 4HOURS we were ready to pay, but the bill never arrived,we had to ask for it. In the end Simon, the Manager came to see us to 'negotiate' the bill value. We paid for 26 carveries in the end and left feeling totally disappointed, let down, undervalued and will certainly not return. Apparently there was a wedding on at the same time and it seems all of the resources were working on that.

"Lovely hotel, enjoyable stay"

Stayed here for one night with a friend on friday. Lovely hotel in lovely setting, a little difficult to find as the satnav took us for a trip around some country lanes but when we finally got there we were pleasantly surprised. Reception wasn't manned when we got there but we received an apology as there was a wedding going on. (we did enquire for some bar snacks and were told they weren't sure if chef could do it because of the wedding but when the lady checked he said he could) Other than that couldn't fault the place, The room was spacious and clean, bathroom was spacious & lovely corner bath though it was a little hot in there. With regards to the lack of hot water that someone else mentioned , ours was lovely and hot. Could have done with more toiletries though as only enough for one person. Bit concerned that our window did not open. We stayed on for breakfast in the morning which was an extra £8 and was well worth it. Had a lovely view of the garden and all you can eat buffet & we really enjoyed it. Definitely worth more than its three star rating but maybe they should have more staff on when there is a wedding on? Just a thought.

"Best Western Bestwood Lodge Hotel, Nottingham, ENGLAND"

First time in Nottingham and I must have found the best place to stay! The hotel was quiet, relaxing and out of the way but still close enough to town for access. Food was excellent, service excellent and I'll be coming back whenever I'm in the area.

"Lost Potential,Moody Receptioist."

28/09/2015

Arrived early Saturday evening to be met by the most unwelcoming of receptionists, a rather curt " No" followed our enquiry as to whether there was a television in the bar we could watch the rugby on,she wasn't very helpful to be fair, it all seemed a bit too much trouble for her to explain that my room didn't have a number as it was called the Queen Mary or something. As we were a group of 9 lads we were allocated our rooms and off we went with our tails between our legs , it felt as if we had been caught smoking behind the bike shed at school. Anyway the four twins and one single booking didn't go to plan as me an my friend walked into the aforementioned room to be met with the slightly disturbing sight of a double bed, never mind, we were changed , taxi called and out into Town. Here's the thing, had there been a tele, we would have definitely watched the First Half in the hotel, then gone into Town, we had all been travelling most of the day and just wanted to relax for an hour or so watching the game. Anyway, this Hotel has so much potential, but it is wasted in its current form, it's seriously outdated, needs a huge clean and face lift and generally somebody with a bit of vision to see how good it can be. The actual staff were very friendly, which makes it all the more disappointing that the first point of contact was the receptionist when we got there. Cleanliness was poor, we went down for breakfast on the Sunday morning and were sitting in the main bar area , the floor was still covered in bits of silvery wedding stuff, and was in serious need of a Hoover, to be honest the stairs were in dire need of a Hoover too. I've stayed in Best Western hotels a lot, mainly in America whilst travelling and they have been really good, but have used only a few in this Country. Unfortunately due to this experience I won't be using a Best Western here again, I was really taken aback as to how poor it was. Real shame.

"Quite an impressive building."

I stayed here on Friday 18th September as I was visiting Nottingham for the Great Greyhound Gathering. I picked this hotel because it was advertised as ‘dog friendly'. My only real issue with this hotel is that I don't believe they can fully call themselves ‘dog friendly' rather than ‘dog tolerant'. She was allowed in the room and received a warm welcome from the staff (as did the humans!) but we were told she was not allowed in the restaurant and only the bar. This would have been OK but breakfast was served in the restaurant, when I asked if my dog was allowed in the restaurant for breakfast, I was told ‘No'. This caused an issue for us as whenever I travel with my dog, we chose dog friendly accommodation where she is welcome everywhere so in order to have breakfast I had to leave her in the room. I set up a camera link between by iPad and phone so I could ensure she wasn't causing any mischief and could hear her howling. I was really worried she would disturb other guests early on a Saturday morning so only managed to throw some toast down my throat before going back to the room for her. This put a bit of a dampener on the stay. The hotel itself is absolutely beautiful, it looks like a stately home or Hogwarts! The grounds are also brilliant & I felt fairly safe during late night walkies. There's a section which is also fairly enclosed where my lurcher enjoyed having a couple of laps. The staff were very friendly and helpful when I asked for an iron and the boiler to be kick started so I could have a hot shower in the morning (my evening shower was fine). The breakfast what I tried/saw looked lovely. The decor is a bit dated BUT I felt it was in fitting with the type of building it is. I think it would have looked out of place to have such a grand building with a super modern interior. Everything was sparkling clean & if they could sort something out regarding breakfast (such as allowing people with dogs to take their breakfast from the restaurant into the bar, or allowing only certain tables in the restaurant) I would definitely go back.

"Last minute stay"

I booked one night here at the last minute for me and my partner. Our room looked as though it had been recently refurbished throughout and was lovely and clean! The staff were all friendly and very helpful. We enjoyed a nice breakfast the next morning and went for a walk around the country park afterwards! Overall this was good value for money and we will definitely be staying here again!

"In desperate need of a refurbishment"

This really could be a fantastic hotel, however unfortunately it is in serious need of a refurbishment. We stayed in the King Richard room and there were a couple of immediate snags, 1. The four poster bed was incredibly squeaky (time to replace) 2. There was no hot water in the shower (this was fixed by running the shower in the room next door....). Unlike some of the other guests we were fortunate in that there wasn't a wedding going on, however this in turn caused us an issue in that on return to the hotel the doors were locked and you aren't provided a key to get in.... Eventually the night porter turned up, but come one this is the 21st century. Breakfast in the morning wasn't too bad, but when we went up to the buffet there were no plates and no one in sight to get some more. The surrounding Country Park is great though it was be nice if they could lower the "aggressive" speed bumps on approach to the hotel as I'm sure if you are in a sportier car you may lose some of the underside of your car!

GeneralManager17, Manager at BEST WESTERN Bestwood Lodge Hotel, responded to this review
Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I would like to thank you for choosing the Bestwood Lodge Hotel for your recent stay in Nottingham, however I am disappointed that your stay didn't fulfil your expectations. I would, however, like to inform you of our current refurbishment programme, which begins within the next week. Our refurbishment programme will update, whilst keeping the original character and features of the hotel, a number of bedrooms and public areas. As this is an old Victorian building, sometimes the hot water takes slightly longer than you would normally expect, however there is a notice in each bathroom informing of this. I apologise that you found this, however I am pleased to hear that our team assisted in getting hot water to you faster by running the nearby rooms taps. For the safety of our guests, doors are locked during the night, however a Night Port, as you point out, was at hand to open the doors upon request. Our Night staff have a mobile receiver which picks up the doorbell, alerting them of you being at the door, therefore although you didn't have access immediately, I am pleased you gained access via the correct procedure. I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed our buffet style breakfast the following morning, and enjoyed the stunning country park which surrounds the hotel. With reference to the speed bumps on the drive to the hotel, these were put in place by the council, therefore the hotel has no control over these. I would like to thank you again for choosing the Bestwood Lodge Hotel for your stay in Nottingham and we would be delighted to welcome you back again in the future. Your feedback is important to us and we have fed this information to the relevant departments.
