"Nice"

26/06/2018

A lovely hotel in the heart of Grantham. Rooms are cosy and the hotel is very clean and clearly has some superb tradition and history. Staff are very friendly and helpful and breakfast was great too. The only downside was the temperature in my room - it was very, very warm with no aircon. Even with the window open it was close to unbearable, but we're in the middle of a heatwave so not much the hotel can do about that. £68 a night for B+B was a bargain. It's a 10 minute walk from the station - so handy if you're traveling by train too.

"Not impressed this time"

15/06/2018

We have previously stayed at this hotel in a four poster and enjoyed a good meal in the restaurant. However returning this time to again stay in a premier room, I.e four poster then this was disappointing. On arrival we were told the main restaurant wasn't open, (even though in a previous response when someone mentioned this, was told the restaurant is open on a Thursday,Friday and Saturday, and this was last Friday) so we would have to eat in the breakfast room (which they call the bistro). The staff and food was ok, but it is a breakfast room and lacks the atmosphere the main restaurant has, so disappointing. We returned to our room at about 8.45 and found that we were directly above the kitchen and a very large and noisy extractor fan was making an horrendous noise and vibration through the floor, so much for a romantic night. It was turned off sometime after 10pm but this was just not acceptable. The extractor was turned back on at 7am the following morning , so no chance of a peaceful chilled out romantic morning in our four poster room. (Not the first to complain about this see post of 23 sept last year). All we wanted to do was have breakfast and leave the hotel. We did raise our concern with reception on booking out and the lady agreed with us this was unacceptable, and double checked she had our e mail and phone number, because ‘the manager was not in yet, but she would want to speak to us further about this'....7 days later and we are still waiting....not acceptable and feel let down , and not the standard we have learnt to expect from Best Western Hotels.Avoid Rom 111.

We visited the Angel and Royal as part of our 50th wedding anniversary celebrations.we were not sure what to expect but were not disappointed. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food in the restaurant was excellent.Thank you

"Good value"

11/06/2018

The food is very good and staff are very friendly. The building itself is very old and full of character, which adds to the experience. The rooms were clean and felt homely, not like a Travelodge, which are all generic. My only personal issue was the pillows were too firm for my taste but that's just me and shouldn't detract from what was a very nice place to stay, Would recommend and return again .

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Nik B Thank you for taking the time to leave such a lovely review. We hope you will have the opportunity to come back but please let us know if you make a reservation as we can arrange for feather pillows if you find them more suitable for you. Kindest regards Jane

"Great hotel"

10/06/2018

We were pleasantly surprised with our stay. The hotel is very old with some lovely features. Our room was very spacious and clean (although the carpet lets it down a bit). Delicious breakfast and good, prompt service. I'd definitely recommend this hotel and would stay again.

Spent the night here with friends, great night sleep and terrific food, nice bar and great staff. Would stay here again if we pass this way. Dinner and breakfast were very good, only problems was the shops on the main street most were vacant

Dera 1petwoth, We are all delighted you had such a lovely stay with us & hope to see you & your friends again very soon Kindest regards Jane

"Awful food"

2
08/06/2018

Spent a few days in this hotel recently. Its like faulty towers. Horrid damp smell throughout the building. Food is terrible and they take almost 40 minutes to bring your food and even then they get it wrong. The rooms are clean and bed is comfy. At the entrance there is a paved area which is covered in pigeon poo and feathers. To add insult to injury at the end of my stay they charged £3 a day for the carpark. I've stayed in dozens of hotels and I have never been charged for parking. Wouldn't recommend it

"Simply splendid"

03/06/2018

This place is a must visit in Grantham, probably really nice to stay as well, for us it was another drink in another bar. Very pleasant & welcoming interior with a great atmosphere, great location with excellent staff and service, fab choice of alcohol and well worth a longer visit.

"air con needed!!!"

03/06/2018

lovely revisit to the Angel of our reunion - staff very helpful and friendly. There is no lift - very old hotel - so be ready to struggle up the stairs. The only real complaint is that with the humid weather the rooms were just too hot to sleep comfortably - did request and get a fan but it was not much good -bought one at B&M with proved more beneficial. There are plans for improvement so watch this space - hopefully they will be able to get windows opened properly. Overall a very pleasant stay again and would recommend

"Mixed bag"

31/05/2018

It's a very old inn so you need to accept certain things. Our room was very large and well furnished . Only problem was the door was hard to lock as illustrated on our second night by the cleaner who had failed to lock it ! Fortunately nothing was taken . Food fine but service pretty slow and the staff could probably do with some training . Not much interest in the customers and we were not asked on either night how our food was . On balance would stay again .

"Very mixed personal opinions"

3
24/05/2018

Excellent town centre location with great, free, parking. Friendly greeting on arrival. Generally, room was very good but some details left a lot to be desired. Net curtains very scrappy and roller blinds did not work properly or were broken. Room was difficult to keep cool so windows left open but kitchen staff and pigeons arrive about 0500 and it is noisy. Smoke drifts up from main entrance and can enter room. Evening dinner good value and well cooked but we were the only ones in the restaurant and waited 45 minutes for our meal. Breakfast on the first morning looked like it had been thrown on to the plate, the fried egg looked like it had been stirred, with a solid, broken yolk. Service also very slow - minimal staff on breakfast duty and am convinced that breakfast chef could only cook on dish at a time. Big improvement for breakfast food on second day but service still very slow. Such a shame for such a classy looking hotel with a lot of history.

"Hit and Miss service"

3
15/05/2018

There was a time when I would have given this Hotel 5 stars but the service is totally dependant on the staff. When it is good, it is very very good, when it is bad it is dreadful. I tried to order a breakfast when I last visited...we had already been waiting rather a long time. A waiter passed by and I asked if I could order...he ignored me and walked on The usual staff did not appear to be in attendance and I can only say the service subsequently twas shambolic! Such a shame... frankly we left without having had even a coffee. The receptionist that day looked totally disinterested. The manager needs to be aware that in many cases one has only one chance to make a good impression. Word and mouth is worth a great deal when recommending somewhere like this. Some staff here definitely in need of customer service training.

"too hot"

3
10/05/2018

i appreciate the age of the building but the rooms were too hot even with all windows and door opened to corridor and all windows in corridor open. in the rooms there were details that needed attention with only 31 rooms i would have thought these should be picked up by staff before they need mentioning by guests

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear wmpxh17services Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments on your recent stay with us. We did try our best in the mini heat wave we all experienced last weekend by as you say opening all the windows including the corridors to try & keep the temperature in the building as comfortable as possible for our guests. I would appreciate if you could contact me to discuss the details that needed attention so we can have the opportunity to put things right. Hopefully you will consider staying with us again so you can see our true capabilities Kindest regards Jane

"Lovely Hotel With Character"

5
09/05/2018

We stayed overnight whilst working in Grantham and loved the hotel. It maintains its charm and character with old beams a lovely courtyard. The room was comfortable and clean with a lovely bathroom with bath and shower. Staff were really friendly and welcoming. The only negative was the plumbing rot waking us up in the night but after flushing the toilet, it stopped. Only a minor thing that wouldn't put us off staying again. A big car park behind the hotel too. Very convienient in the centre of Grantham in walking distance of great pubs and restaurants.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear MarkJules Thank you for the lovely comments & 5* rating on your recent stay with us Hopefully you will have the opportunity to come & visit us again in the very near future Kindest regards Jane

"Another nice stay in a characterful inn"

4
26/04/2018

I have stayed at this hotel several times in the past two years. The staff are always welcoming and the hotel is full of unique character. For example, every bedroom has a name and no two are exactly alike. This time our room had a four poster bed with a really comfortable mattress. The food in the restaurant is always good, although they do stop service dead on time, so ensure all your food orders are in on time or you may not get pudding! Unlike many hotels, the hot breakfast is individually cooked so it is always fresh. If you want to stay in the centre of Grantham and value history over things like a pool, then there really is nowhere else you should go.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear 309roger, Thank you for your positive review on another stay with us & we look forward to you continuing to visit us Kindest regards Jane

"Inadequate training of waitresses"

2
24/04/2018

I came in for a meal whilst on a business trip and not knowing the area found this hotel locally. The menu sounded lovely outside. The exterior is slightly confusing and there is not a clear entrance into the restaurant/bar. However once I entered I was asked if I was staying in the hotel and given a very small table located very close to the main doors. I asked to move and this request was eventually accomodated. I chose the seabass from the main menu and asked that the chopped potatoes be left out and I be given extra vegetables. After nearly 10 minutes of giving my order a young waitress appeared and told me it was not seabass, it was haddock and was this ok. I asked her to check if the price was to be adjusted on the menu as the selling prices of fish were clearly so different, she told me she would check however never came back to me. The dish came out and I could smell the fish immediately. No fresh fish should smell and I could tell the fish was smoked. I was not told it was smoked haddock and would certainly not have chosen this dish if I had of known as I do not like smoked fish and meats. The accompanying vegetables were just a heap of cabbage and a few mushrooms on the plate, which for £13.95 was extravagant! I was starving having not eaten most of the day however could not stomach the fish so left more than half of it. The waitress asked me if everything was ok and I told her no, the fish was smoked and I was not told this and did not like it. She said it was not smoked and just took the plate away. I then received the bill for the meal and drinks. When another waitress came back over I told her the bill needed looking at as it was (1) not as advertised on the menu and (2) not as described. I asked for the bill to be adjusted. I was offered a token gesture of a glass of wine to be taken off the bill. Clearly more staff training to be able to deal with customer complaints here and a nose between smoked and unsmoked fish! I would have rather paid at the local McDonalds to get what I expected than this.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Emma J I'm sorry to hear of your disappointing meal with us, I have investigated & unfortunately there was a miscommunication between the kitchen & waiting staff on this occasion. Hopefully you will give us the opportunity to show our true capabilities Kindest regards Jane

"Great Spring Break."

24/04/2018

Lovely old hotel in the centre of Grantham. Rooms are a real maze. Bed was very comfortable although room a bit hot. Excellent cooked breakfast. Evening meals we particularly enjoyed were the Sea Bass and also the Lamb dish. Restaurant service was friendly although somewhat slow and disorganised ( which seems to be quite common these days) Good gated parking on site. Would definitely recommend as a base for exploring the area.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Richard B,Thank you for your lovely comments on your recent stay with us.I'm sorry to hear there was a service issue & I will be using your feedback to make improvements. We do hope that you will come back 7 stay with us again. Kindest regards Jane

"Lovely Old Inn"

4
08/04/2018

Impressive building with lots of interesting history. Good sized room with in character furniture but also with mod cons. A down side was that the room was very hot and we could not alter the thermostat so had window open all night. Also the oak sleigh bed on the slopping floor was noisey when turning over in bed. The breakfast was really good and we had smoked salmon with scrambled egg and smoked haddock with poached egg. It was a good breakfast menu. Lovely hotel with gated free parking and great for visiting Grantham and area.

"Very enjoyable Easter break"

4
02/04/2018

We arrived with our friends on Saturday afternoon, and after finding our way to the car park, which is hidden behind the hotel, we made our way to reception. Check in was fine, and they were helpful when we found out that breakfast was not included in the stay I'd booked (my fault). We enjoyed afternoon tea, and found the staff very helpful. The hotel is old, but very well kept, and the rooms are lovely. We would have liked rooms closer to our friends, and the walk upstairs to the third floor was a bit of a trek, but the room was worth it. We did have trouble closing the windows in our room, but was dealt with by a man with a mallet. Breakfast was fine, although you should know that when you order bacon, you get one rasher, unless you ask for more. I suppose you get spoiled with buffet breakfasts, when you help yourself. My wife and friends were not keen on the coffee served (both for the afternoon tea and breakfast), but were told by Jane (the manager) we should ask for the coffee from the machine in the bar, which was better. After a day out at Southwell races, and Workhouse (both worth a visit). We had a nice meal on Easter Sunday evening. On the whole a very pleasant stay at a lovely old hotel, with great staff. We'd definitely recommend, and look forward to another visit, hopefully over New Year.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear M5Liv, We are delighted you & your friends enjoyed your Easter break & we look forward to you returning for your New year break to welcome in 2019 with us. Kindest regards Jane

"Anniversary Lunch"

31/03/2018

I booked the Angel & Royal as my parents had their wedding reception there 67 years ago and my sister & I wanted this to be a surprise for them. We had a lovely meal in Bertie's Bistro and the staff were very friendly and efficient. The food was well presented and very good, the steak was excellent.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Guzzibreva, It was an absolute delight & pleasure to meet your parents on their 67th Wedding anniversary surprise lunch. We are always thrilled to welcome back previous Brides & Grooms & I hope it brought back wonderful memories of their special day all those years ago. We look forward to seeing them again for every anniversary. Kindest regards Jane

The hotel was what we expected. Nothing wrong with the place or the service we received. All the staff were helpful. The hotel is located in a good place to allow you to go out and enjoy Grantham and the surrounding area.

"Inappropriate language!!"

1
26/03/2018

I recently stayed at this hotel and I fount my stay to be the worse hotel I've ever stayed in. Apon arriving I notice the manager stood outside front reception doors smoking away which I fount unacceptable for any hotel worker to do let alone a manager. After checking in I come to my room which is nice decorated and had a warm feeling to find the sink full of slimy water that left a smell and with the sink being hard to unplug without putting my hand into this water. Later on that evening when sitting in reception I had to put up with listening to inappropriate language from the reception staff and waitresses about customers which I fount very disgusting towards the people that pay the wages for these staff memebers. I had a glance through the menu to find very little option for vegetarians and vegan which let down this hotel completely. Apon having breakfast the next morning the croissant was barely cooked, and my breakfast tasted like it was part cooked and reheated. After my visit to this establishment I wouldn't recommend this hotel to anyone to stay in. This hotel seriously needs to make improvements and have a massive staff meeting about language in the reception area! Disappointing visit

"Reliable, good quality restaurant"

4
22/03/2018

We booked a meal at the Angel to celebrate our wedding anniversary. You never know whether you will be put in Bertie's Bistro or the Kings Room and there couldn't be much more contract between the two in terms of setting. The food is exactly the same though! On this occasion we were in Bertie's, a nicely fitted out modern bistro style restaurant. The menu changes regularly so not much point in making specific recommendations but we both enjoyed our beetroot and goats cheese starter. If you choose the cheeseboard instead of dessert you can choose from a selection of local cheeses which is a nice touch though its a pity my port didn't arrive. Service is efficient and friendly and you are not hurried.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Richard,Thank you for taking the time to leave your review regarding your recent wedding anniversary dinner with us.We are really pleased you enjoyed your meal & hope you will come & visit us again. Kindest regards Jane

"Fantastic Conference Service and facilities"

5
22/03/2018

We held an evening conference in the beautiful Kings room for over 50 delegates including food and breakout room. Jane was brilliant from the start and made sure that all of our requirements were met (not an easy task as we were quite demanding) Jane and her staff made sure the whole evening went perfectly. I stayed in a beautiful room and had a great night sleep, having smoked salmon and scrambled eggs for breakfast. Thanks again and we will definitely be back :)

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Sharon C,Thank you for your wonderful comments on your recent conference with us.We look forward to holding many more meetings for you in the near future. Kindest regards Jane

"Wedding nightmare"

2
18/03/2018

When booking, or before arriving (so you have time to cancel) ask one question...."is there a wedding"?This hotel can't cope with weddings and paying guests at the same time. Some staff tried, and credit to them, but overall we felt let down. A big shame really as this was a family celebration.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Drewshabooh, Thank you for your feedback regarding your recent stay with us. Whilst we appreciate that large wedding parties can be a little overwhelming to our leisure guests, we tried our very best to ensure that you had a comfortable and enjoyable stay with us and we are deeply sorry to hear of your disappointment. As you and your guests were celebrating a Birthday, we thought we would make the occasion extra special by offering you the Prince of Wales Suite as a private dining room complete with personal waitress and complimentary bottle of Prosecco. I understand that there were some issues at the start regarding noise from the Wedding Disco, however I believe this was quickly rectified by asking the DJ to lower the volume and bass to a more reasonable level. It was lovely talking to all in the King's Room after your dinner, I trust that you enjoyed the food itself from the comments passed on to the waitress. Had you raised any outstanding issues with me at this time we would have done our utmost to solve any problems before you checked out the following morning. Kindest regards Jane

"Fantastic Service"

4
03/03/2018

We stayed over for a family funeral and were caught up in the very bad weather during the first few days in March. The manager (Jane) and her team could not have been more helpful, arranging special meals for one of our party with eating limitations, installing extra heaters to cope with the very cold weather, and coping with lots of changes to the wake as numbers changed at short notice. This made a difficult occasion much less stressful for all the family and everyone commented how brilliant the hotel staff had been during our stay. Thank you.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Peter, Thank you for taking the time to leave such a lovely review on such a sad & difficult stay for you & your family, it is much appreciated. Hopefully we will see you again soon, hopefully on a more joyous occasion Kindest regards Jane

23/02/2018

Stayed for a few nights and the stay was average Breakfast is slow coffee warm in the pot and when asking for bacon with my eggs got one rasher my colleague got half a field mushroom! It's an old hotel and the staff were nice and helpful Would like to see some minor room and bathroom upgrades Would stay again but not a lot of choice for hotels in the area

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Michael, We are sorry to hear that there was a few issues with breakfast. We will use your valued feedback to make improvements on the quality of breakfast & hope you will have the opportunity to stay again to see the improvements for yourself. Kindest regards Jane

16/02/2018

We went to this lovely hotel for Christmas Sunday lunch with 4 of our friends. The service was excellent, food fantastic and very reasonably priced. It was just a shame that more people were not taking advantage of this little gem of a place. We shall definitely be returning.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Judith, Thank you for your lovely comments on your Christmas Sunday lunch with us, as you say it's a shame that more didn't come & enjoy ,especially as we had a record breaking December on all our other festive luches, dinners & party nights. Hopefully you will be returning this coming festive season but hopefully we will see you much sooner. Kindest regards Jane

06/02/2018

We went for a funeral and the Angel was recommended and it more than lived up to the recommendation. Historic building in the center of Grantham. The food was delicious and the team (especially the manager) could not do enough or us. Our overseas vistors loved it. We will go back.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review

06/02/2018

Good situation in village but badly needing TLC. I know this hotel is meant to be eccentric but the whole interior and beds are in dire need of updating !! Even the reception area is very dated. Staff polite and helpful !! Booked taxis and made alarm calls.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear JohnGP, I'm sorry to hear that you were unable to regulate your room temperature during your stay, the reception team would have happily come & adjusted your radiator thermostats if you had let us know at the time although we are delighted that you found the service & cleanliness excellent. Plans for this year to totally refurbish the lounge, bar & bistro along with a number of bedroom, so hopefully you can come back late in the year to see for yourself. Kindest regards Jane

"Needs renovating"

3
04/02/2018

An historic coaching Inn in an historic town. Neither does their joint heritage justice. The town is a hotchpotch of mismatched architecture (St Wolframs Church excepted) and does nothing to encourage me to a return visit The Angel and Royal Hotel made the same impression on me. It offers the high standards of cleanliness and service that I expect of a Best Western Hotel. But these are offset by tired, uninspired public rooms and aging bedroom facilities and decor. However the only failing of any significance is guest inability to control bedroom temperatures.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review

My home town. This is one of the few things still left and worth a visit. Our third stay at the Angel over the years, a different room each time. We opted for the Four poster on this trip. The rooms are clean and of a good size. Breakfast is plentiful and good quality.

"Stopover"

04/02/2018

Picked Grantham to break our journey and the Angel and Royal as it looked interesting. It's a very old historic building and a cozy hotel. I had advised in advance of mobility issues due to injury and requested ground floor rooms as there are no lifts. Our rooms were actually outside which should have been ok but the flagstones were extremely slippy due to rain which was very dangerous with crutches. Not really the hotels fault but something to be aware of. Our room was large and comfortable with a nice shower room.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Vicki W, Thank you for leaving your review on your recent stay with us.I'm sorry you found the original flagstones in the courtyard a little slippery ,we do try to power wash them at regular intervals & salt in frosty weather.Perhaps you will be able to come & see us again & maybe stop in one of rooms off the main stairs, when you hopefully have recovered from your injury. Kindest regards Jane

"Excellent as always"

17/01/2018

Located in the middle of Grantham within walking distance of the train/bus station so it's in an excellent location. I have stayed 3 times in January (lone traveller) in Rooms 102 (x2) and 110, both good sized and very clean rooms. Staff are great. Restaurant is excellent and good value. Plenty of room in the Car Park. No lift so if you have mobility issues I'd ask for a lower floor.

"Great New year"

10/01/2018

Had a lovely time over the New year here. The staff were attentive and professional, some of my party had dietary requirements and they were well taken care of. The room was excellent. I look forward to coming back here in the future.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Stephanie W, We are delighted that you & your party enjoyed your New Year's Eve stay with us. Everyone has commented on what a wonderful night they had welcoming in 2018 in particular the meal & our lovely young lady who sang throughout the meal. We are thrilled you intend coming back to see us again & hope that maybe you will all return to ring in 2019. Kindest regards Jane

Comfortable and helpful staff. But oh dear, one or two problems. The room was very adequate but a largish toenail clipping was on the bathroom floor. My evening meal was very poor as the large chunk of belly pork was half almost uncooked solid fat. At breakfast the bacon was like leather. To their credit they deducted to the cost of both our evening meals.

"New Years Day Scraps"

04/01/2018

Went for new years day lunch. Service was very slow (over 2 hours for a meal, booked in advance) even though it wasn't that busy. Messed up our orders constantly and nearly served me gluten and I'm celiac which would have caused me internal damage. When food came it looked like veg scraps thrown into one big bowl and the meat was cold and chewy. Several of us were ill following day including myself which we are pretty sure was from the food we ate here. Lovely building shame the rest is seriously failing. Avoid

"New year lunch"

After a relaxing start in reception area with a Gina and tonic, we went upstairs for lunch. We found our table, there was no one to show us. Then we sat and waited, it took an hour for our starters to arrive and a further half hour for the main course. This was mediocre vegetables not cooked, desert was questionable too. Not once were we asked if everything was ok. Waitresses were polite but looked absolutely fed up and not really interested in the diners. Overall a very disappointing lunch to start the year off. Wine and drinks were extortionate price, Would not repeat this experience. Hotel looks generally tired and tying to be something else,

Superb Christmas Day in the Kings Room. The food was first rate and the staff went out of their way to make the day really festive. Stayed overnight and thoroughly enjoyed Christmas Night in a lovely atmosphere.

"Boxing Day 2017"

26/12/2017

My husband and I went out for a Boxing Day walk today to town for a Boxing Day afternoon drink. We headed to our favourite place which we often frequent for respite and tipple after shopping! Upon arrival we were greeted with a note on the door to say that it was only open to those that had purchased a christmas "package" deal !! To say we are disappointed would be an understatemet.... the money I have spent in the A&R over the last 10 years on coffees, lunches, dinners, inpromptu wine o'clocks, to not be able to enjoy a quiet drink in what I "had" considered to be the best 'local' in town because I am not part of the elite christmas package club. I dropped in to the A&R about 10 days ago with my husband for a post christmas shop glass of wine or two - and even asked the lady who served us if we could enjoy a drink in the bar over the festive season if we were not resident who confirmed we could! I am therefore really unhappy about today - you are turning away your "bread and butter" - I had arranged to have a birthday lunch with a friend on 6th Jan but I'll be going to Prezzo instead. Today, husband and I carried on up the High St and went to Weatherspoons, pleasantly surprised to be honest - service great, welcoming and Pinot Grigio half the A&R price; no brainer for the future

"Historic building right in the heart of Grantham"

22/12/2017

Beautiful period building affording excellent accomodation food and drink. Breakfasts range from light continental to full english. rooms are spacious and clean. Although right in the middle of Grantham it is a very quiet hotel affording a good night's sleep. A small intimate bar stocks a good range of gins, imperative after a day at work.

I have already completed a positive review of the Angel & Royal on TripAdvisor, but once again my business trip to Grantham was enhanced by a totally satisfying stay at this historical hotel. Staff are always helpful, and room standards are typically excellent.

the hotel is really nice the rooms were old style but quaint and very well laid out and very clean the staff are all very friendly and helpful for me the hotel was ideally situated and the gated car park at the rear was very convenient

"Old"

29/11/2017

This is a very old hotel. Clearly once a coaching inn it has an interesting past. This does mean though, that it is not "new". Some of the windows are draughty, some of the floors are uneven. They do have a lovely old bar at the front which appears to be little used, the fireplace in it is magnificent. The bar they do use is still quite nice, but not nearly as good. The beer is ok though! We were re-visiting Grantham for 1 night (I used to work there) and had a very large bedroom overlooking the courtyard, despite a freezing night and a window that would not quite close it was very warm. The bed was super large and very comfortable. Bathroom good - all appropriate facilities - I guess a fridge would be good in summer - I did not see one. There's free parking at the back (lots of it). Unfortunately on the day we visited the drains were rather offputting in the reception area. We did not eat here on this stay - there is a magnificent room upstairs and Bertie's Bistro downstairs. The position of the kitchen must make delivering good food diffficult (it is distant from either eating area). The building deserves a really good chef and restaurant - perhaps that needs a major interior refit (which would be expensive and difficult - I guess.) Breakfast was ok - I thought the fat tasted old and the scrambled egg not fresh. I would still recommend this place though - lots of history and a really good bed.The night we stayed (a friday) was quiet. And staff were all good.

"Friendly Hotel"

27/11/2017

Excellent Hotel in the centre of Grantham, friendly and very helpful staff, resturant and bar was reasonably priced, breakfast was the whole works, rooms are comfortable, and they cater for disabled people with rooms on the ground floor

"Very Nice hotel"

Nice hotel, old but well kept - of course there is always room for improvement, good breakfast, good location and generally nice hotel to stay. Personnel was friendly and would stay there again when I will visit again.

"Could be better"

3
19/11/2017

This hotel has many quality's but lots of faults / what it really needs is an excellent housekeeper who will check each room is cleaned properly and that everything is in working order. our room was very dusty and the mirrors were only cleaned half way, as far as the cleaner could reach I guess. No excuse / faults with the rooms lies with housekeeping apart from the noise in those near the kitchen !!! / the breakfast is very good and the staff excellent./ the hotels public area lacks atmosphere and the bar has nothing to commend it. The layout could be better. The crunch question ! Would I stay again? Maybe

"Nice hotel"

4
17/11/2017

The hotel is situated in the centre of town. Car parking in the road behind the hotel was free (barrier system) but fairly difficult to find - as is the hotel itself. Not their fault but Grantham must have the worst one-way system in the country! I had asked for an accessible room so we had a ground floor room, off the courtyard - huge room with modern bathroom including a wet room shower. We were a bit concerned at the lack of curtains in the bathroom but as it was November we decided it was unlikely that anyone would be sitting outside to take in the view!! Comfy large bed, two armchairs and the usual tea/ coffee etc Dinner in the Bistro was OK but nothing outstanding - the usual sort of Lasagne or steaks etc . My sister and I both choose grilled chicken in breadcrumbs which came with a large pat of garlic butter on top plus sweet potato chips - nice but rather greasy! We had a mini cheese pie as a starter which was also nice. Breakfast was fine - all the usual cereals, juice etc and a variety of cooked options. My order was taken so swiftly I hadn't had time to read all of these so I missed the porridge or smoked haddock! The staff were all very pleasant and helpful. A pleasant overnight stay but nothing remarkable.

"Disappointing Meal is an understatement"

3
11/11/2017

We live a 5 minute walk of the hotel and occasionally enjoy the atmosphere of turpin's bar. After a busy Saturday we thought we would treat ourselves to eating out. We won't put our taste buds through a meal at the Angel again. Such a shame as it really is just around the corner. Another shame is we still had to pay for tasteless starters and 2 glasses of wine and two pints of very cold bitter which would have paid for 2 mains and dessert of expected quality and drinks a stone's throw from the Angel. Why would you let an historical building with such opportunity produce less than acceptable meals, presumably due to chef's budget. There was only one other table being served on a Saturday so I guess the reputation is well known,. We wouldve happily stayed all evening for the full experience had the main not left , literally, a bad taste in our mouths .

"Disappointed with Strange Service "

09/11/2017

Having previously stayed & eaten at the hotel, I would rate it as mid-range in terms of quality but my latest experience is I shall never forget. Having received my order of a salmon & cream cheese sandwich and tucking in, I was asked by the waitress if everything was satisfactory with the meal. I responded with the fact the bread was stale, to which I received “OK, great” complete with a smile; nothing more said or done. Sandwich left. Not returning.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review

"Very Disappointing"

I have always been a fan of the A&R; I had the most lovely wedding reception here in 2008; my husbands retirement party and several meals over the years. Tonight I took my husband, Mother in Law and Daughter to the Bistro for dinner for his 64th birthday. Firstly can I say the serving staff were attentive and lovely :) Thank you Ladies you were a treat. The food was greatly disappointing. My daughter adores food and could not get through more than half of a very greasy chicken schnitzel dish (although the sweet potato fries were amazing she said); mine and my husbands steak was not great and most of it taken home for the dogs tea. We both ordered medium - I would say mine was rare- very pink and bloody - I can eat it that way but tbh the quality of the steak poor. My mother in law had cod with green beans - she could not eat the beans as they were rock hard. We had starters except my daughter - I had mozzarella & tomato salad - the tomatoes were tasteless but I enjoyed the mozzarella. We all got offered a bread roll except my daughter - now I know she did not order a starter but how did that make her feel at the table - its just a bread roll - could they not have stretched to one extra? She had mine as actually I don;t eat bread but that is not the point. We ordered one dessert from the menu and asked for a cheese board to accommodate 3 people (even though it was not on the menu) but it really could have been served far more attractively. I did not complain to the serving staff - not their fault and I did not want to upset anyone on a family occasion. So disappointing, food, served in a really noisy bistro - clearly there was a party of 12+ contractors or similar from Glasgow in for the week (or whatever) that were incredibly noisy - had no respect for other diners - constantly mobile phones ringing - just a really unpleasant experience. I think there ought to be some sort of etiquiette for a restaurant just like there is on a train service now where mobiles are put to silent during dining - some people want to have a relaxed meal in quiet(ish) surroundings. All in all just under £170 for a meal we did not enjoy - just under £20 for a bottle of Red! Ouch! One other thing to note when we were ordering we were given a menu of the day - fine - but when we were sat at the table saw that there were other offerings on the "specials" that we were not even told about - just something to point out - I felt like we were sold the "expensive" menu with out the full choice (which clearly the other party of 12 were offered). I have always loved the A&R - its a classy beautiful place in Grantham - but tbh I felt tonights meal wasn't any better than something I could have had at a basic "steakhouse" in the town at half the price or less. Sorry A&R - I won't be coming back for a long time for a meal.

Booked here and got a good deal from Best Western (£60 B&B). The hotel is full of character with great flagstone floors and a quirky layout. Our room was great with all the amenities that I would have expected. We book a meal in the Kings Room restaurant and wow what a fantastic setting with big chandeliers suits of armor etc created a great atmosphere and the food itself was fantastic really good quality at a reasonable price and the waitress was very good indeed and very attentive. The breakfast was again very good quality and the staff very helpful and attentive I really couldn't fault it. So it was a great experience and we most certainly will be back

23/10/2017

Me and my mother stayed at this hotel at the weekend for a friends 50th birthday and we were both blown away by how beautiful the place was and how much history and character it held. We stayed in a twin room (204) which was spacious, clean and decorated perfectly, with all the basic amenities you'd expect. The bathroom was also large, very clean and the shower was incredible (I didn't want to get out!!!). We both really enjoyed our stay, I wish I could give 5stars but unfortunately we were let down by the breakfast the next morning, which was sent back twice because the order was wrong and then we were given cold toast. Apart from this we had an awesome time and would love to come again.

We were warmly welcomed as arrived late. Everything was explained about our stay. The car park was secure in that there is CCTV everywhere. The room was comfortable, clean although couldn't find out why it was so warm so had to open the windows. We were given extra pillows when asked as the ones we had were quite flat, which is how some folks like it. The bed was comfortable and clean. Breakfast tasty and the serving staff very warm and friendly. The only criticism would be that the breakfast got served cold as the kitchen is next door (across a courtyard) and the staff have to collect and walk back through the frontdoor in order to serve it. I particular refer to baked beans and poached eggs. The coffee and toast was hot and the selection on what is on offer very good. Thank you to all for making our stay so welcoming. We will be back.

Having had to stay in a Premier Inn recently, which wasn't great, I booked to stay here 2nd/3rd October, and immediately welcomed by a delightful young lady (sorry, I don't know her name!), who explained all the usual facilities etc, and even served my first pint of Ollerenshaw's ale. I enjoyed it by an open fire. My room was comfortable, and had old unique furniture, which gave it a warm and cosy feel. Complimentary bath products, tea making, and a very comfy bed. The bathroom was one of the cleanest I had ever encountered in a hotel. The food is fabulous, my steak cooked perfectly, and at last: a cheeseboard with good quality cheeses, which I'm sure were artisan, not mass produced. Service was brilliant. I highly recommend this hotel, it's been the most comfortable business trip I've ever experienced, and would love to come back, hopefully for a relaxing break with my wife!

lovely hotel with lots of history. .our room, 105, was great. though in need of a some TLC. It was a junior suite with a four poster bed. On the first night I came to nice , clean but absolutely ROASTING room. I thought that opening windows would help, but naaahhh , it made it just slightly breathable but the smell from old cooking oil. The day after I realised the room is just above kitchen , so no sleep after 6 or before 21.30 when the massive extractor fan is turned on. On the other hand my bathroom floor where ‘heated' due to kitchen being just below LOL. The breakfast generally was ok , but the size of tables in bistro so small that you really could r operate fork with 4 people at the table (tiny) I didn't gave up , being absolutely shattered I have ordered braised beef with gravy. The most salty gravy I have had for a long time ! Did the chef even tasted it before !? Day 3 , after bad dinner me and friends decided to get pizza to our rooms , especially after my bad food experience. So when we got back to hotel to sort it one of the waitresses rolled eyes at us! Really , is that service ? We as your guests require respect dear lady! And maybe if your chef would cook better we wouldn't order anything elsewhere ?! Day 4 , aww joy Italians occupying hotel. First they got lost shouting their heads off near my room, drunk ! Second they went downstairs still shouting ! Hotel staff haven't done nothing to keep them quiet! Hotel yard is small and if you need to keep your windows open you can hear every single conversation what so ever , so no sleep until Italians go out! I came to my room and found that the heating were off. It would be good if the radiation wouldn't leak and if the bathroom wouldn't got so cold. Did I forgot to mention that pet friendly hotel got loads of creepy crawlies in the rooms? Yeah every night I could find something on my legs. Unfortunately I do not recommend , even if it's nice looking old building.

"Possibly the oldest hotel in England?"

15/09/2017

This hotel has a history going back at least four hundred years with open wooden beam ceiling and large stone fire places in the bar and upstairs dining room. This does not detract from its excellent modern amenities. There is an extensive menu of quality food to suit most tastes. The bar provides a range of beers and wines. The staff are the most obliging we have come across, cheery and always willing to assist in any possible way.

"oozing atmosphere"

14/09/2017

We stayed here as a stopover, and we were very impressed with the look of the building in general. Our room was on the third floor, up numerous stairs, which weren't a problem for us, but someone with limited mobility may struggle. The room was lovely, large and well appointed, plenty of tea, coffee etc. In toe bathroom however, the toilet bowl could have done with a good bleach to whiten it up a bit, and long black hair left in the handbasin ! There was abirthday party on the evening we stayed, so we went out to eat, on our return the entire ground floor of the hotel was crowded with party guests, with one very overworked(but highly efficient!) lady appearing to run the show. The party was noisy, which, even on the third floor, kept me awake, but once it finished we had a good nights sleep. We are going to visit this hotel agan, as we didnt get a chance to explore it properly, and I think it will have lots to offer

Staff much friendlier than last time I came here, and better atmosphere. Maybe coincidence but suits me. Hotel is nothing fancy, does the job, got a sensible price online, so happy with that. Paid a very low rate for this hotel with a full breakfast included. Free parking is close to the hotel and the town is next to it allowing meals in the evening. The rooms was almost spotless (cobweb) and facilities were excellent with a comfy seat, chair, desk, wardrobe, drawers, bath and shower. In fact those facilities that the 'budget' chains are doing away with. The hotel and surrounding area were very quiet overnight. I finished with an excellent breakfast with a lot of choice and friendly service.

We recently celebrated my Father in Laws Birthday and d a table for 9 people. The 2 course lunchtime menu came in at £12.50 and the portions were huge. For an extra £2.50 you could have a 3 course meal. We were made to feel very welcome by the staff and nothing was too much trouble. This is better value than our local Brewers fayre!! The history of this hotel dates back to the Richard III era and even earlier. You don't get that from a Muck-on-a-truck restaurant chain!

05/09/2017

Enjoyed a one night stay whilst on business, nearby. This hotel in the centre of Grantham is clean and comfortable with good staff. No complaints at all. Staff on reception and serving food were very good and friendly. The bedroom on the third floor was clean and well appointed if a little too warm, there's no aircon. The window was open however this did let some traffic and people noise in from the below courtyard. Food at Dinner for me was excellent and great value for the DB&B rate, would definitely recommend this as superb value. I choose the steak which was beautiful and perfectly cooked. Unfortunately one of my colleagues dinner was not so good and was returned for a different meal. All of this however dealt with in an apologetic but professional manner. Breakfast was adequate and check out again very good. All in I would have no hesitation in staying and eating here again.

30/08/2017

Arriving very late due to a missed train connection, I was very pleased to be able to enjoy a night's stay at the Angel and Royal. Reception was unmanned, but I was soon greeted with an apology and offered a room with breakfast at a very reasonable rate. The so-called 'Oriel Chamber' was very impressive, as it was comprised of three parts: (1) a large room with a comfortable double bed, desk and upright chair, armchair and large television (2) a utility room for storing luggage and ironing and hanging up clothes (3) a bright airy bathroom with a large bath and shower, useful shaving mirror and plenty of hot water. Breakfast was between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. in an attractive little restaurant overlooking the main street. There was a tempting display of cereals, berries and fruit alongside bottles of fruit juices and croissants and pastries. Coffee was served in a large pot by a friendly waitress and the cooked breakfast was crisp and tasty, though it could have been hotter. Check-out was made easy by the cheerful young lady at reception and I made a point of complimenting the hotel on an exceptional unexpected stay.

We stayed here whilst in the area for a wedding. The hotel looks very traditional from the outside. It is right on the main road and with a lot of 1 way systems it took us a little time to find the car park. There is a small bar/restaurant located next to reception. The room was nice and clean and had all the amenities you would need for a short stay. We had trouble contacting reception with the phone in the room unfortunately. The bed was very comfortable but the windows are very thin so we were woken early by people coming and going outside. Breakfast was amazing, they offer an extensive choice and the staff were great. Overall a lovely hotel, just wish we had got a better nights sleep

"I'd return"

22/08/2017

Overnight stay in 'accessible' room (off the court-yard). Access wouldn't be suitable for a wheelchair but fine if you can manage 1-2 small steps. Room had plenty of space as did the level access shower room. Super King sized bed which was clean and comfortable enough for a decent nights sleep. The room was well presented and (while I don't swab things, run my fingers along the tops of wardrobes, or crawl around the floor) was certainly clean enough for me not to be concerned in any way at all. There was a little noise (briefly) coming from the courtyard at around 10pm (it seems to be used as a shortcut by the public) but it didn't keep me awake. Reception (in the main building) was clean and the staff polite and helpful. I've had better breakfasts (tinned fruit - really?), but it was adequate - I didn't go hungry. If you have a disability, it's worth noting that the car park is at the rear of the building, across a small road. Not really far to reception but far enough if walking or carrying luggage is a bit of a challenge. Interesting building if you like architecture and history, as is the town. I'd stay again if I was in the area.

Good value 2 night break with dinner on the first night. Deluxe room spacious and comfortable. Staff friendly and helpful. You feel safe here as a single older lady on her own. Like all old buildings, there are always things which need maintenance or upgrading . But I have stayed here a few times and found it relaxing. If you have mobility problems, there is no lift and you may have a long walk up and down to your room. Make sure you let them know!

My wife and I are currently suitcasing it across Europe for over a month now, trying to stay at the best available hotels in each city we visit. We were hesitant to stay here but it was a best western brand and it was really cheap, so we figured how bad could it be, the reviews look good? (Big Mistake) This place is cheap for a very good reason. The rooms are filthy and the constant noise from the courtyard below will keep you up all night long! The night manager obviously allows this place to be run like a Hostel at best and more like a low class community college dormitory. After making a midnight complaint about the noise below to him, he still allowed it to go on all night and into the morning when the kitchen crew showed up. It is totally impossible to sleep through the constant conversations taking place outside in the courtyard (echo chamber) below. Every 20 minutes throughout the night, you will hear drunks gather in front of the two in-house bars below smoking, laughing, arguing nonstop..No matter what you try to do, turn tv on, close windows (No AC, Hot and Stuffy and Smells) the conversations will seem like they are taking place next to your bed, in your room. The courtyard acts like a perfect echo chamber and the hotel staff must not realize this because they seem clueless to it, when you complain about it? Like I said, complaining to the night manager did nothing, all he does is pace the courtyard every 15 mins throughout the night, smoke his cigarette, cough then spit, then go back inside..I could set my watch by his smoking habit and pacing. Horrible! Then around 5:30-6:00am the kitchen staff shows up for work, they gather on the table below, talking about their previous night out,etc not giving any concern at all that guests are right above them, trying to get some sleep if at all possible.(Not possible) Whatever you do, don't fall for their cheap rate, it's cheap for a reason... Nobody at this dump cares and it clearly shows...Pay an extra few bucks and find a place where it's quiet, clean and they care! I have to believe some of these excellent reviews are being written by staff, there is no way anyone can say this dump is 4-5 stars at $44, lol. Pet friendly and it shows! Read the Poor and Terrible reviews for a true description before deciding to book IMO. Local and Best Western management need to actually stay in these rooms at this dump themselves during the wknd and see for themselves, how horrible that noise is coming from the courtyard IMO. Good Luck!

We arrived to find ourselves placed in a truly horrible room - No. 10, which was dark and dismal on the ground floor in the outside courtyard, with filthy carpets, and designated as a Disabled room, complete with walk in shower etc. It was horrid! To give the hotel their due, after conveying my dismay, they offered us a much better room, within the main body of the hotel - the Angel Chamber. What a difference! This room had a small sitting area, and separate bedroom. The building is clearly very old, and it was a little disconcerting to sit on the toilet and feel you were falling off - even before wine! What was unacceptable, however, was the fact that even in that lovely room, the carpets were not vacuumed well, there was dust in every corner, and the net curtains were filthy. My husband went to hang a towel on the wardrobe to dry, and found a book and an old frilly pink bra on the top of it. At least that gave us a laugh! The room was exceedingly hot and stuffy, and sadly, the open windows only let in the smell of fat from the kitchens opposite. Breakfast was ok, but nothing special. We were very grateful for the change of room, but would not return here.

We had our wedding here on 24th June & had an absolutely fantastic day. From the moment we checked in the day beforehand, to when we left on the Sunday, everything was perfect & wonderful. All of the staff were very accommodating & friendly & went out of their way to make our guests & us feel welcome & relaxed. Jane, the manager, was amazing! Nothing was too much trouble, she is a great wedding organiser & went above & beyond what you'd expect. The whole day went like clockwork, the rooms were decorated better than we could have imagined & the food for the wedding breakfast was fantastically tasty & beautifully presented. Many of our guests commented to us that it was the best food they have ever had at a wedding. We would definitely recommend this venue for anyone getting married.

"Lovely Hotel... Rooms could be updated"

06/07/2017

Firstly let me say how friendly and helpful the staff are... really kind and courteous and the customer service is second to none so let me say a huge well done and thank you... My partner stays at this hotel regularly on business so I seized the opportunity to also come... What strikes me about this hotel is that it is steeped in history and the hotel is very proud of its heritage (as it should be). Very rare you can find a hotel of this standard within a town and I think it's wonderful the hotel promotes this in this way... The lounge area and bar are really comfortable and welcoming.. The rooms are again lovely (but are very dated) I understand the hotel wants to keep the uniqueness of history but the rooms really need updating and modernising (whilst still keeping its historical theme) Our room overlooked the walk through alleyway and we had to keep the windows open due to how hot the room was but it was very noisy outside which unfortunately did not give me a good nights sleep... The mattress and bed linen where clean and comfortable... The breakfast was wonderful and cooked to a very high standard... I had scrambled egg and smoked salmon... Overall I would stay here again and in whole I enjoyed my stay minus the late night revellers who kept me awake... Also possibly fans in the room in these summer months could be offered.... but thank you for a warm welcoming stay

Colleagues and I stayed for three days in June. The staff was solicitous and kind, making sure we had everything we needed. They assisted us in securing items that we had forgotten, provided excellent service at meals, arranged taxis for our business meetings, and even made an early breakfast for us when we had a train to catch. We felt most welcome and appreciated the thoughtful service and historic location.

I visitor this place for the first time this weekend and I don't rate this place. I make this comment as a general overall of everything. One member of staff was still hangover from the night before. I won't be coming back.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Tramp1234,I have contacted you via trip advisor as I think you must have the wrong hotel. We most defiantly did not have any staff member hungover nor have we ever had a case of this.I would appreciate if you could contact me directly so we can clear up any confusion. Kindest regards Jane

Lovely big room, excellent food, friendly service and ample parking. Also, fast enough free wifi to stream a movie on my iPad. I was really impressed with this cosy hotel that's full of character. Good beer in the bar, as well.

23/06/2017

I stayed this week and the whole stay was outstanding, the staff were very good, I didn't eat dinner in the hotel as I was late back from golf but I did have breakfast which I specially ordered as salmon with poached eggs on brown toast and I was perfectly cooked and presented, lots of history in the building and I would happily stay again.

"History lesson"

10/06/2017

From the outside this looks like an old stone-built hotel. But the inside hides a history of England with superb medieval tracery, massive fireplaces and a host of royal visitors over the centuries. The hotel was an important stopping place on the Great North Road. Well worth asking for a guided tour. We only popped in for a light lunch, which was perfectly acceptable and Mechelle looked after us very well. (You can ask her why she's called Mechelle.) The history bit was a complete surprise.

Dear Whittlesford,Thank you for your wonderful comments on your recent lunch & history tour.I will pass on your thanks to Mechelle & hopefully we will be seeing you again in the near future Kindest regards Jane

Room clean but very hot and noisy! Bistro was dreadful. Poor, limited 1970s menu. Staff who didn't know what they were doing, wine opened behind the scenes, service slow and uncaring! Leaning across tables, got the wrong meals and waited ages for the right ones!. Left as soon as possible.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Bobdensley,I'm incredibly sorry to hear of your disappointing experience in our restaurant. I will investigate as a matter of urgency as this is most defiantly not our usual standards for which we are inordinately proud of. I will of course contact you directly so we can have the opportunity to restore your faith in us Kindest regards Jane

"Old coaching inn on the High Street."

06/06/2017

Stayed at this hotel some years ago on business, and always promised to bring my wife to stay for a night. We were heading south after a holiday in north of England, so establishment convenient just off A1. Massive car parking facilities across the road at rear of hotel, which was good. Had a room with 4 poster bed, only problem constant fan noise from below, which seemed to be permanently on. The hotel seemed very quiet. One bar was shut at lunchtime, the other had nobody in it, so zero atmosphere. We went for lunchtime drinks elsewhere. In the evening was hoping to dine in the Kings Room restaurant, but it seemed to be set up possibly for a training course. The Bistro seemed rather sterile, and did not have that old coaching inn feel about it. So again we ate out elsewhere for dinner. Breakfast was freshly cooked at brought to our table - very good. All in all a rather disappointing stay, and shame we did not feel like using the hotel facilities. Apparently major work carried out in 2003. Shall not stay here again, and regrettably cannot recommend the hotel.

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear V2-60885, Thank you for your recent comments on your recent stay with us. We do still have the Kings Restaurant open on Friday, Saturday & Sunday lunch but find our regular guests enjoy the less formal dining in Berties during the week day, perhaps you would consider staying with us again maybe at a weekend so you can once again enjoy the delights of the Kings Room Restaurant. "A Worthy Trip Off the Well Beaten Path- An Ancient Hidden Gem"

28/05/2017

My friend and I stayed at this hotel from May 21st - May 23rd. This was a wonderful, whirlwind trip to Europe. As you can imagine, we visited some very wonderful cities and places and stayed in some amazing hotels. Paris, London, Amsterdam...wonderful and iconic European cities - fast paced...go go go...everything you could want or need at your fingertips! And don't get me wrong, they were amazing places to visit and we had the time of our lives. And then... We ended up in Grantham.... We arrived by train at night and were instantly greeted at the station by a wonderful older lady who offered to walk with us part way to the Angel and Royal so we would not get lost. She declared it to be a "lovely, very old" hotel and she couldn't have been more right. After a ten minute (or so) walk, we arrived at the hotel and I knew instantly that I would fall in love with the place. What I didn't know is just how in love I would fall with the hotel, area and the too-short amount of time we would spend there. The lady at the check in desk was friendly, check in was fast and our road-weary bodies were in our beautiful room within five minutes of arrival. After settling in, my friend went down to grab a couple of glasses of wine. When she returned she remarked on how friendly and helpful the night clerk was - interested and helpful about our stay and where to go. We did not know then that he would soon become our favourite at the hotel. The next morning we went for a lovely breakfast and once again, the staff was friendly and not without a smile. The food was superb and filled our bellies. The nice lady on the front desk that morning was nice enough to get us a taxi so we could visit Woolsthorpe Manor (the birthplace of Sir Isaac Newton). During the day, we did that as well as toured the town of Grantham and nearby Oakham. In the evening we visited some local pubs but were less than impressed so we decided to go back to the hotel to enjoy a glass of wine on the terrace. We met some nice guests and the night clerk was back. We learned his name was Adrian and once again, he was very friendly and knowledgeable about the hotel and area. He was very busy, going about hotel business and we all at the table had to remark on how hard working he was. He never seemed to stop but always had time when we bothered him with a question and when we asked to have a look at the King's Room - intent on seeing a ghost or two. He was also quick to serve, bringing us refills of wine when requested. We didn't see a ghost, but we fell in love with your hotel and hospitality. I find it funny how we traveled to so many places and had such wonderful adventures, and yet Grantham and your hotel is what stand out. I will be back to England someday and am committed to make the journey to your out-of-the-way hotel to once again experience the charm of something a little different and more low key. It was just what we needed mid vacation and a huge thank you goes out to the hotel staff. P.S. Adrian if you're reading this (I hope) - please know how wonderful you made our stay. It did not go unnoticed and I'm sorry we didn't get to thank you and say goodbye in person! Take care!

Jane G, General Manager at Best Western Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Janice W, We are all delighted your recent stay with us was so enjoyable, your thanks have been passed onto Adrian & we all hope that we may see you again on your next European tour Kindest regards Jane

Had our wedding here in April, a brilliant day was had by all, not one negative comment from us or any of our guests. Food was amazing, staff were attentive, Jane the manager and her team went above and beyond, we could not have booked a better venue. How anyone can moan about this hotel is beyond me, it is an historical building which much take a huge amount of time and money to keep to the standard it is in, a big thank you to you all, we will definitely see you soon

My sister and I met up in Grantham and stayed at the Angel and Royal. The hotel is well placed centrally and has lots of interesting historical features. Our room, on the second floor, was quiet except on Sunday night when there seemed to be some event on at the wine bar across the lane and, since we had the windows open because it was hot, we could hear quite a bit of shouting. Otherwise very peaceful. Nice big rooms with modern en suite and tea making facilities. Breakfast is very good. Plenty of choice and very nice staff. We ate dinner here on two nights. Dinner is ok but the menu is quite restricted so a couple of nights were enough and you are in easy walking distance of a good range of restaurants. The hotel has private parking, which is very useful but note that this is only free if you book direct with the hotel and not if you have booked via any online consolidator.

"Lovely hotel set in a ghetto of a town "

14/05/2017

Hotel looked beautiful but was not worth 240 pounds for 2 nights ! The room was above the kitchen and constantly smelled of fat ! The heating was on all the time in the corridor which cooked us. The breakfast was nice with a good selection. Grantham has nothing in it but pubs ! There were cars speeding past and you generally felt unsafe walking around the town with drunks everywhere. My partner asked for a bowl to have a piece of cake in our room and the reply was " you don't bring your own food here .I will allow it this time" !!

Went to a reunion and stayed at the hotel. Car park is at the back of the hotel but found after a little while. This hotel is one of the oldest in the country and did not really know what to expect. We were welcomed by a very friendly receptionist, always a good start. Our rooms were near the top of the building and meant as there were no lifts had to climb quite a few stairs! The room was super - very big and the bathroom was lovely. Kettle etc provided. We had snacks in the bistro which was lovely if a bit pricey and we had an evening meal which was delightful. Staff very helpful and friendly. The only draw back is no lifts as the building is too old. There are ground level bedrooms but if you want an evening meal you have to climb stairs which may not be helpful for disabled residents, apart from that a lovely hotel. My sleep was rather spoiled as the a/c is a little noisy and had a couple of amorous pigeons outside our room!!!

"MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT THIS HOTEL. "

06/05/2017

Stayed for two nights over a weekend whilst visiting friends in the area. The hotel certainly has a great deal of history and this is evident wherever you look and interesting. My room 112 had a four poster bed and overlooked the central court yard of the hotel which appears to be used as a throughfare between the front and rear of the hotel. The first thing to say is the hotel seems to have its heating on full, not just in rooms but corridors too so the room was very stuffy and there's no control over the heating in the room so the only option was to keep the one window open which overnight meant disrupted sleep due to noise from the court yard and bar area. The room really required a deep clean as a build up of accumulated dust could be found around furniture and skirting boards as well as stained carpet. The bathroom is a bit of a health hazard as I found out as the in bath shower door had been removed and replaced by an inadequate shower curtain, this meant that water from the fixed shower head leaked on to the laminate floor of the bathroom creating a very slippery surface, this and the lack of a rubber bath mat resulted in slipping when getting out of the bath and twisting my ankle. The heated towel rail was not working and the thermostatic control had been removed. The tile grouting was also rather dirty and the remains of the shower door rusting. It was my intention to eat in the hotels "Bertie's Bistro" on the first night but upon entering was told it was closed for a private function. I was directed to a small bar which quickly filled up with standing room only so ate outside of the hotel. I would have expected to have been told that the bistro was unavailable when checking in. On the plus side the breakfast offering on both days was very good and a problem the first night with all the power sockets in the room failing was quickly resolved.

You go back in time when you visit this hotel. It's a beautiful hotel, with friendly staff. Our room had a reception area, hallway, spacious bathroom and bedroom; all beautifully furnished. My only small criticism was that breakfast was in the bar, which was cramped. Having walked round the town of Grantham, The Angel and Royal Hotel is the highlight in this tired town. However, the surrounding villages are lovely, as is the nearby town of Stamford.

Very old historical hotel, nice room but bathroom door sticks when shut and difficult to exit, had to rescue my wife so an elderly single person would struggle to get out.Reception staff nice and friendly, breakfast was superb, car parking is very good to the rear of the hotel. We had lots of stairs to climb to the third floor to get to our room which was very nice, carpet was a bit grubby and could do with a clean. Will stay here again if in Grantham. We had room 302.

I enjoyed my stay at the Angel and Royal, once I'd located the car park! The staff were very friendly and it's so convenient for the town centre. Stayed here from Friday till Monday, greeted by lovely receptionist who got me keys to a wonderful large room with spacious bathroom and a fantastic hot shower, my room was dressed to impress with a huge double bed with quality bedding , hotel has such ambience, Saturday morning breakfast was simply the best I've had for over 10 years of hotel stays, the full breakfast lasted me all day as so filling, Sunday likewise and Monday I had early check out but the chef did me a wonderful pack up for my long journey home, I can't put into words how impressed I was to be honest, I also loved the local history and the wonderful buildings close by

The staff are amazing. Friendly and professional. The hotel has some interesting rooms which are comfy are very clean and well furnished. I ate Sunday Lunch here and it was excellent. It is served in the large hall/room on the first floor.. a baronial style room. Very lovely. Once again the service was very good indeed and the ambiance just lovely.. I will go again and for those traveling the A1 it is worth the short diversion to Grantham. Just to feel so comfortable and so relaxed, it is a fine place to be.

We received a warm welcome at check-in, got to our room (rose room, 214) walked in and the heat hit you. Even with all 3 windows open it was really hot in the seating area. The room itself was really nice other than a couple of things that needed attention (a broken blind, the headboard could do with a good clean and the net curtains didn't fit the windows). We had dinner in the king's room and it was delicious, well worth the cost. Once back in our room the heat was too much to sit in the seating room so decided to go to bed. The bed was comfortable but because of the heat neither of us slept very well, even with a fan it was too hot. Breakfast was very nice. Staff were very polite. We were hoping to stay again in Aug but there are no rooms available for the date. It would be an excellent rating if it wasn't for the few issues above.

12/04/2017

I didn't stay at the hotel. We held a buffet lunch at The Angel & Royal, to celebrate a school reunion, and we couldn't have been in better hands. Jane Green, the manager, was well organised and professional both before the day and during. The cost was surprisingly reasonable - all agreed in our pre-date meeting when she gave us her full attention and the benefit of her experience. Special diets were catered for comprehensively. This hotel is probably the oldest in the country, so to hold the party in the King's Room, a medieval hall, was incredibly special and just the right size for our group of 53. The lunch was beautiful and the staff attentive and polite, even when we were still at the venue after an unexpected 7 hours, with the volume of chatter and shrieks of laughter sustained throughout. Thanks to you and your staff Jane. You made our luncheon and afternoon run very smoothly. Your MC skills (with your spoon to bring us to order) are awesome! I would highly recommend this hotel, as a party venue, without hesitation. AND, there is plenty of free parking - a big bonus!

"Some Good - Some Bad"

15/11/2016

I last visited this hotel 30 years ago when I lived in Grantham so booked a one night stay for old times sake and to see if the town had changed. We parked in the hotel car park at the rear and arrived to find a deserted reception so stood a short time (no bell to ring). The lady was very nice and chatty though and offered to help with our bags to the first floor room. The room was cold (frost forecast) and the heating was off - poor customer care. Turned it on and we soon warmed up. The room was a good size but tired and scruffy although somehow in keeping with this very old building. The fully tiled bathroom was very cold too but the radiator had been 'doctored' to stop you turning it on. The toilet seat was very insecure. The thick layer of black dust on the door frame summed up the attention to cleaning detail. This was reinforced by the accumulation of dust on the floor of the fitted wardrobe. Cleaning is not a strong point here! One of the bedside table lamp bulbs was broken. We ate in the bar area and the service was really good and pleasant. The slow cooked pork was average, the fat being a bit gooey. After a good walk around the town we went up to bed. The bed is without doubt one of the hardest we have slept on - should be 'tried' to sleep on - and had an uncomfortable night. We went down for breakfast just after 9am and sat for a good 5 minutes before anyone approached. Telling us to help ourselves to fruit juice, cereals etc we pointed out there were no glasses which were quickly brought. Another 5 minutes and our order was taken - porridge and smoked haddock with poached eggs. Coffee tea and toast arrived and we waited. And waited. In fact we waited 30 minutes. Finally served with the excuse, 'the smoked haddock takes a long time to cook'. Oh dear. Check out was a perfunctory affair with no pleasantries, simply handed the code to escape the car park. The hotel is a really nice old building oozing history and charm. The room standard lets it down badly but with attention to detail and cleaning, it could be so much better.

Lovely historical hotel with lovely updated comfortable rooms and an excellent standard of cleanliness. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We stayed for one night to meet up with family. Great snug which offered comfort and privacy. Great service and the dining room was an historical dream. The evening meal was well cooked with great choice on the menu. The breakfast too offered masses of choice and was well cooked. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Arrived in Grantham at lunch time on Saturday from London en route to visit friends. 5 star welcome from Sarah the Reception Manager who was very happy to show a selection of rooms in this genuinely historic hotel. Received a complementary upgrade from a superior room to a luxury four poster room. Spotlessly clean and warm room and Bathroom. Recently replaced carpets throughout, white fluffy towels and new white bedding but on a non premier inn mattress. Hotel has not recently been updated therefore it does have a somewhat dated feel but this is compensated for by the amazing historic feel of the public areas of the hotel. Very comfortable stay, not a luxury boutique hotel but a good 3 star hotel with a fabulous welcome on arrival and from all staff encountered throughout the stay.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear martynricky, Thank you for your lovely comments on your recent stay with us in our wonderful historic hotel. I will pass on your thanks to team for making you so welcome. Hopefully we will see you again perhaps on your return trip. Kindest regards Jane

With the demise of the TIC in the North one has to be grateful for clever phones and the apps, alas when one is booking one does not get the local knowledge until it is too late - they (TIC) may well have known of a better venue, nice once but now very tired rather like the rest of the town. Got to see the blue plaque for Maggie, not a lot else to do. Had a creaky nights sleep, ate breakfast & went on our way.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Elsie W, We are sorry to hear that you didn't find much to do in Grantham although reception would have been happy to have informed you of lots there is to see & do as there are in fact lots for which we are very conveniently located, perhaps you will come back & see us so we can have the opportunity to redeem the town & surrounding area. Kindest regards Jane

We were booked in here for 3 nights but liked it so much that we stayed a fourth. We had a package that included dinner and breakfast and both had great menu choices, all the food was delicious. We had a 4-poster canopy bed in a large room which was very pleasant and comfortable. Staff were very nice and helpful, especially Christine. We really liked the historical aspect of this hotel, and even though it's several centuries old, the plumbing and heating are well updated. Also, there's ample free parking that's easily accessible and only steps away.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Gina A.We are all thrilled that you enjoyed everything of your stay with us so much, and look forward to seeing you again in the very near future Kindest regards Jane

"A medieval banquet in the Kings room"

25/10/2016

The Lincolnshire Branch of the Richard 111rd Society held a medieval banquet to celebrate their 40th anniversary. We chose the Angel and Royal because Richard 111rd actually stayed here. It was a fantastic occasion with medieval entertainment and lovely costumes. The food was provided by the hotel and it was delicious. We tried to keep the food as authentic as possible and Jane the manager and the chef pulled out all the stops to give us what we needed. The staff were excellent, courteous and efficient.. Some of our guests stayed overnight and reported comfortable rooms and a superb breakfast.Thank you Jane and her staff for an unforgettable evening.

"Nice building, shame about the breakfast!"

23/10/2016

Such a shame that our stay here was marred by two things. Someone knocking on our door at 5.40am and then again 10 minutes later. No idea who this was! Perhaps issue more than 1 key to guests that intend staying out or returning separately ,at least they will know which room they are looking for! Then breakfast. Waitress took our order for cooked breakfast and coffee and toast, the coffee and toast was sent to the wrong table,we thought, never mind we'll have theirs when it comes out. It never did. Another 15 minutes went by, the same waitress came to take our order, I told her we had already ordered and it was her that wrote it down. Another 15 minutes later and a different waitress came to take our order. We hadn't even been served our coffee and toast. I just told her I wasn't waiting any longer and left, only to be met by the original waitress bringing our cooked breakfast. I was too wound up too eat by now. so checked out and went to Morrison's for breakfast. Really need to organise your staff better!

"First visit to Grantham"

16/10/2016

Lovely old building with some beautiful features. We stayed in the Kings a Room with the four poster bed - lovely spacious room however the pillows were extremely hard which made sleeping uncomfortable. The breakfast was very disappointing too, deep fried sausages, over cooked bacon, sour milk at the buffet bar and pastries that were congealed and stale. Not really worth £93.

"Historic Hotel. Loved It"

Dog friendly hotel was why we chose it. All staff made us so welcome especially a waitress of two weeks called Ellie. It is a well appointed hotel with real historic features . Room is really homely with all expected facilities. Will be back ??

"Oldest Inn in Britain"

11/10/2016

An ancient higgledy piggledy hotel - host to many kings. A little tired in places but charming. Excellent room. The bar could do with some TLC as it appears a jumble of furniture - not cosy at all. Food was very good in the functional bistro. The star of our stay was Jane who was running the show. Excellent customer service with a smile. Seeing her help and tutor a rookie first night waitress/bar person was a lesson in helpfulness.

"Characterful old coach house"

09/10/2016

I've stayed at this place too many times to count. Prices are as competitive as any other location in or around the town and the location is a winner. It's such an old hotel that it needs constant repairs and attention to some of the rooms, but that is to be expected. If you can put up with a few little things not working properly 100% such as the curtains not drawing fully, you get a charming and characterful room, nice helpful staff and a well prepared breakfast area. English breakfast is very good and I never fail to have one every time I return. Free car parking at the rear and Wifi available but generally terrible access. Perhaps it has been upgraded since I last visited but if not, it really needs to be in this day and age.

"Bistro has terrible service"

1
05/10/2016

Though very pleasant the staff were we had terrible service. We walked into the bistro at 18:45 and the had to wait until 19:15 before anybody came to take our order. At this time we told the person that we had to be somewhere at 20:00. We reminded the staff that we needed to be somewhere at 20:00. At 19:40 we were told that our meals would be with us in a few minutes. At 19:45 we decided to leave, offering to pay for the two soda waters ( which really tasted as if they sparkling water) that we had received. The let us off this cost. Waiting for nearly 50 minutes from when we arrived I don't call good service.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear infinidim, I'm incredibly sorry to hear what poor service you received last night & can assure you this is not our usual standard. "Surprisingly good!"

4
26/09/2016

A lovely quirky old property - actually a combination of many old properties spread over several levels and across the (pedestrian) street - joined by a fully enclosed walkway. It is better than their website suggests; I had visions of a glorified pub with rooms, but it is significantly better, and it has an excellent restaurant. The staff are all exceptionally helpful. There is more than ample free parking for residents to the rear of the hotel. The room was well furnished, very comfortable and exceptionally clean. The only downside was a bit of chaos at breakfast on both mornings - possibly as it was a weekend and it could be that all the guests happened to pick the exact same time - so there was a wait for a table. That said, the most helpful staff provided us with coffee in the lounge whilst we waited, so full marks for customer service. The tariff was perfectly fair, and I'd have no hesitation in visiting again. Grantham itself is somewhat mixed, and can be a bit noisy on a Friday and Saturday night, but there was peace and tranquility at all times within the hotel.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Howard 1955, Thank you for your lovely comments on your recent stay with us. We are delighted that you have no hesitation in coming to visit us again & hopefully it won't be too long before we see you again. Kindest regards Jane

"Great food, room not so great"

3
25/09/2016

Lovely characterful hotel. We stayed for two nights Friday and Saturday during the science fair. Room wasn't great and looked really tired for £110 per night. Two bulbs needed replacing in lights above the bed, bathroom door wouldn't close, one of the convenient electrical sockets wouldn't work, the bed creaked terribly. Even turning over in the night you'd wake up due to the noise, and the pillows were like cardboard. Didn't sleep well at all. We've stayed at the local premier inn before and although the rooms there were bland we had a better nights sleep there. We reported the issues after the first night and asked if we could change rooms. There were no rooms free, we were told the issues would be reported and the blown bulbs would be sorted. Returning to our room later no bulbs had been changed, and the bathroom door still didn't close. That all said the food and service elsewhere was fantastic, breakfast was lovely. So comes highly recommended on the food front.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Kwakafb, I'm sorry to hear you had some issues with you room & that it spoilt your recent stay with us. We are updating a number of our rooms & hope you would consider staying with us so you can have the opportunity to see the improvements we have made. Kindest regards Jane

"Louie's wake"

2
23/09/2016

We wanted somewhere just to go and remember our dog Louie who ended his days today. It has been a while since I've been to the Angel and Royal and we have had some amazing experiences there like when they did a meal with a celebrity chef and they even won an award for the toilets. The greeting from Sam downstairs was lovely and he sent us upstairs to the dining room where we Had wait a while as there was only one waitress. She told us to choose a table and she would be with us. Choices made, wine ordered eventually. So what did we think? Bread rolls were they meant to be crispy or soft? They were dry and hard to tell what they were meant to be. My daughters terrine looked good and she reports tasted good. My prawn cocktail was a throwback to the 70's and was tasteless and came with the bread pre buttered- what is that? We both ordered the turbot and it looked ok but they served it while one of us was at the ladies. What has happened to the etiquette that you don't serve unless all parties are at the table. Once again it was all just a bit tasteless and very disappointing. Grantham really needs a fine dining venue and even a champagne bar. This building has so much potential an deserves so much better. Thank you Sam for making the service!

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear tfcs61.We are sorry to hear some aspects of your recent dining experience was disappointing, however I'm thrilled to hear that Sam looked after you so well & will pass on your thanks to him. "Good location"

16/09/2016

Good car park, the hotel especially the rooms in the courtyard, need a serious upgrade, carpets dirty, cistern in bathroom needs repairing, the bed was very hard & room very warm. The staff were very friendly, but the food & service was terrible, some staff training maybe would help, I have never before had fried scrambled egg, which looked like omelette gone wrong, it looked simply awful & inedible. We did book an evening meal, thinking there was an a la carte Restaraunt upstairs, but were told our meal was in the bistro, same room as breakfast, what happened to the Restaraunt?.

"Nice old hotel, service could be sharper"

13/09/2016

We stayed two nights and had a lovely, clean and spacious room. Our dog was made very welcome (only a few dog rooms) and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was an historic, attractive room and the food was good - not cordon bleu, but good. Breakfast was served downstairs in the bistro and while the food was fine, other aspects weren't! There were too few tables, meaning we had to wait and the buffet was not replenished enough. On both days we had to ask for glasses and bowls to be provided and we gave up waiting for orange juice! Lovely, smiling and chatty staff but we felt more training in getting the basics right would make a big difference. We also found Grantham rather unsavoury in part, with lots of shouting and swearing in the street outside local pubs. Not all the time, but on three separate occasions during our stay. There is a large secure car park to the rear of the hotel.

"Clean and comfortable"

11/09/2016

Stayed for the weekend to attend a party locally. Very interesting and historic inn. All staff were pleasant and helpful. Only problem was the breakfast staff - mostly young people with one "older" woman. I asked a young lad for the tea to be changed, as the order delivered was wrong . . . 2 different members of staff asked me "what's wrong with the tea?" in loud voices and an accusatory manner!!!!! Good job I'm not sensitive!! Next day - tea delivered . . . toast crumbs inside the pot!!! With just a bit more common sense and care the service could have been satisfactory. The food itself seemed good quality.

"It will surprise you "

04/09/2016

We visited the Angel and Royal for one night and we were pleasantly surprised. As my wife is disabled I asked for a suitable room and we were given room 107 with a walk-in shower room. This room wasn't within the main hotel section but a few yards along the mews. A couple of issues such as a bulb blown in the shower room but nothing that detracted from our stay. The shower was uber hot and powerful, just what you want. The room was a good size, wardrobe, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, tea/coffee facilities and a wall minted TV....what more do you want? We have a small motorised electric scooter (fits in the car boot) and the good news is that this can be driven from the outside Mews straight into the room, a wheelchair would be fine but a larger scooter a potential no-no so best to check. Whilst we are on the disability subject please note that this hotel does not have a lift so definitely best to make sure that you get a ground floor room if a staircase is an issue. What this does mean is that you can't access the 1st floor restaurant, we therefore went to another restaurant (Nepalese) but that's another story. The positive news is that breakfast is served on the ground-floor so that's not an issue, what is though (on 4th September) is the actual breakfast. We always gauge our hotel stays by the sausage's, unfortunately the Angel & Royal fall short of the mark ( sorry). Breakfast was a let down, sausage (was this Lincolnshire or rubbershire?) over cooked and tasteless, fried bread too hard, bacon too fatty and under cooked. I had to drop a star for this poor early morning experience sorry. Okay, that was the only let down and actually didn't affect our overall experience. Bar is small but cosy, every (and I mean every) member of staff was spot on... well done. Car park is close by and free, don't forget that the code changes daily. Okay, the breakfast was a let down but why do you book a hotel, yep... for someone to sleep. Leaving the best for last, we had a great nights sleep made even better by two single mattresses in a double bed (with her snoring maybe separate rooms would be better !!). To close, if you want an English history lesson over a pint, service by 5-star staff and a cracking nights sleep then the Angel & Royal is definitely the hotel for you.

Polite welcome at 2130 hrs on the Thursday evening. On my own, room top of hotel third floor. Nice & clean. Not that large but adequate for one. Really glad the windows were open as the room was very hot. The outside temperature wasn't that bad either! Good English breakfast. Awoken by bin men at 0630hrs in the courtyard area! Just the one night stop over. I would use the

This is a lovely old inn, we didn't stay there but ate in the king's restaurant twice. Lovely ambience with soft music in the background. Excellent friendly service and superb food. Sword fish with sweet and sour veg was delectable. Lots of history about hotel in Reception on way to toilets which were a cut above the norm with real towels.

I am a regular at this hotel, in fact I stay at this hotel every week for business. The hotel and it's staff are absuletely brilliant and very friendly. The rooms are clean with all the facilities such as an iron, hairdryer and tea and coffee making. The dinner menu is great and the food is always great. The cooked breakfast is outstanding. It's made to order and the service is great. Although the hotel is located on the main high street but with your windows closed you cannot hear any noise. All the 29 rooms are individually decorated from a 4 poster room to a king size bed. There is also free WiFi and works great. The only negative point I need to point out is that they have just introduced a £5 room service charge. I do feel as a regular customer it's bit unfair to charge especially when you do not like to dine on your own in a full restaurant. I can definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who visits Grantham for business or pleasure. Great friendly staff.

Me and my family stayed here for a night recently for a family wedding. The staff were very polite and helpfull. The hotel is lovely. We stayed in a deluxe room with my partner and 3 children in room 203 and it was so spacious with a sofa bed for the older kids. The only thing that could be improved would be to get air conditioning. My room and the rooms my family had were all like green houses not good when your trying to get ready for a wedding. The room used for the ceremony and sit down meal was beautiful. And the breakfast was delicious

Dear reptilegirl0, Thank you for the wonderful comments on your recent stay for a family wedding. We are delighted that you enjoyed your time with us so much, unfortuantly because of the age of the hotel we are unable to have air conditioning units attached to the 800 year old facade. Hopefully you will be able to come & see us again maybe when the weather is a normal temperature for England. Kindest regards Jane

Difficulty in finding the parking place overcame very quickly, even if we had to go around the block a couple of time! BUT we were welcomed with a very big smile. Even though a very busy weekend we and our party were very, very well looked after. From a buffet meal for 60+ (60 booked BUT there were more than 10 extras!) to the check out on the Sunday after a FULL breakfast it would be difficult to fault the staff and service. YES the furnishings could perhaps be tidied up BUT it is a very old Hotel. We certainly ALL enjoyed ourself.

We stayed for the weekend with a large group. We were given room 215 on check in, The Rose Chamber, which was a distance from reception up and down several half flights of stairs. It was worth the wait, we had a lovely, large room with a king size bed(very comfy) a separate bathroom off the corridor into the room with two basins, a toilet and a shower over the bath. The towel bundle had huge bath sheets, great when you are above average height, and some pleasant toiletries. There was a large mirror with double plug point so great for hair drying and straighteners, no struggling with a short dryer lead! We had a tasty buffet meal on Friday evening, in the King's room, very old and atmospheric. The staff were all friendly and helpful. One slight disappointment was breakfast on the Saturday when the staff struggled to cope with the numbers because "you all came together". On Sunday this was rectified, both days breakfasts were good- a good choice not just 'full English' or pastries. I really enjoyed my sausage and bacon breakfast bap. Reception staff were also friendly and helpful and the location right in town meant we could get out and explore the town easily. There was so much more to Grantham than we expected. The car parking was plentiful, at the rear of the hotel, we found it easily as we used the sat nav reference from our booking email. Overall a good stay, we would return should we need a hotel in that area, thank you.

Had an overnighter here. Took me a while to find car park as Grantham likes its One Way systems! Hotel itself was nice. Staff pleasant. My room was in an out building. Quite nice. Comfortable and spacious. Note though... Walls are paper thin. Remember rhat if you are having a nice conversation with your partner, or watching something adult on your laptop. Could get embarrassing! Restaurant ok bit menu basic. I had fish and chips which was tasty enough. Another annoying thing was rhe Clock tower around the corner going off every half hour. But thats not the hotels fault. All in all a nice stay. Would I stay again? Probably.

We chose The Angel Royal as we have stayed in lots of Best Western hotels previously as we like the fact the hotels are all individual & have their own character - we were not disappointed with The Angel Royal, we were attracted by the hotel's much deserved excellent reviews and it's amazing history. The restaurant serves very good food & the breakfast was as good as I've had anywhere. The manager of the hotel, although very busy, took the time to personally show us The Angel Bar & to explain about the ancient tunnels & amazing history of the hotel. The King's Room at the hotel is a must see! We used the hotel as a base to visit BT Belton House, NT Woolsthorpe Manor Birth place of Sir Issac Newton. Lincoln Cathedral & Nottingham were an easy drive away. The nearby church in Grantham & Sir Issac Newton's school are only a short walk from The Angel. This hotel is an unexpected gem situated right in the centre of Grantham with plenty of free parking!

Not one of the best hotels I have stayed in. No toilet paper in the room, broken toilet flush, rotting Windows that could not close, dirty towels and raw food served in the restaurant. Interesting and historical building in Grantham town centre. Excellent parking facilities and friendly, polite and helpful staff. Our room was comfortable and very clean but also very warm, even with no heating on. The windows could only open about six inches so it was difficult to cool down. We were also opposite the aircon motors which made an annoying noise but only some of the time. The courtyard below is used as a smoking area and the smoke drifted into our room !!. Breakfast varied over the two days but was substantial with the most comprehensive choice I have ever come across. Sunday evening meal was not expensive but was also very average. Roast potatoes and (huge) Yorkshire pudd over done and veg underdone and hard. I can only speak for one room out of many, rather weirdly our kettle switched itself on in the middle of the night !! Luckily it had water in it and the noise woke us up, otherwise who knows what might have happened. I am sure that a different room on a different occasion would produce an entirely different review.

What a lovely, friendly hotel. Clean confortable with a fabulous history . The down side was that there was no disabled provision, and aged relatives with poor mobility struggled with the stairs and steps in the hotl.

Very surprised by this hotel. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but once you work out that the parking is around the back of the hotel, the inside is deceiving. Check-in was smooth, though I wasn't asked if I had parked in the hotel car park or what time check out was (hadn't found the parking at this point). The room was completely unexpected. A large spacious twin with a hallway from the bed room to the bathroom, which held a pair of vintage weighting scales! Everything was clean and well serviced. Cannot comment on breakfast as we didn't make it, but it's a shame it's only on until 1000 on weekends. Checkout is at 1100! I had assumed 1200, but was rang at 1130 to advise of the time (so they did give me 30 mins extra). Location is right in Grantham high street, so convenient to local amenities.

What a fantastic stay my wife and I had at the Angel & Royal Hotel. This is a brilliant hotel - the staff, rooms and location are superb. We stayed here as to explore the local 'Newton' history, so being in Grantham was ideally situated from Wrenthorpe manor just 15 minutes drive away. Firstly, the staff of this hotel are to be commended, every single one of them from check in, waiting and chef are all excellent, being a seasoned traveler i can say it was some of the best customer service my wife and I have ever received. When we arrived my wife needed to eat something due her medical condition, we was advised courteously that our first choice would take some time, but was promptly and professionally given an alternative. This really fixed my wifes diabetes with no fuss and the manner of the young man was exemplary, could easily be a 5*+ international hotel member of staff ! Our room was the 'kings room' four poster, it was absolutely stunning, if you get a chance to stay in this room, please do ! We was lucky just got it allocated, but the bath, four poster bed and size of room is brilliant, again we had reasons to rest/sleep during the day and the incredibly heavy curtains blocked out the light. We was also provided a very good fan to keep us cool on one of the warmest days of the year. The soap/bathroom items were of a very good quality too, i had a fantastic soak in the bath and felt like a king being in there ! The catering was sublime, I got a package deal (well worth it!) so only had to pay for drinks, which had a good selection of wines and local ales (I started with a local ale and shared a bottle of sweet Italian champagne with my wife) it was a great meal which we both really enjoyed. I was later informed that the bookings for that night had suddenly increased, and the staff was brought in to cover it, i have to say they done so excellently, there was alot of people eating/drinking and the wait times were not unreasonable, and the waiting staff were very polite and courteous in what was a very busy time, again 5* service ! The receptionist gave us advise on what else to see in the locality, so we headed off to enjoy the countryside in our car, it was splendid, coming from Sussex which isn't short of great scenery it was great to see such beautiful and well preserved houses. We followed the road to Lincoln and thoroughly enjoyed the massive cathedral, all thanks to the tip from the receptionist. The hotel is really well situated in town. I had a pleasant walk around after my breakfast (again, this was a delicious meal!) and enjoyed the walk along the river and to the park, everything is so well kept. Parking is ample and around the rear of the hotel, it is secured with a gate and I think it has CCTV, so i had no real concerns of leaving my car there. It was very convenient. All in all, this was a fantastic stay and our trip was made all the better by the brilliant staff. Highly recommend and lightly to go again if ever in the area.

Stayed for one night mid week for dinner bed and breakfast with friends. Hotel very old with great history but could do with updating in many areas. Staff very friendly and helpful. No lift so you need to be able to manage stairs. Room was very hot and pillows unacceptable as they were so hard to sleep on. Bathroom was very good but toiletries minimal and cheap. Also one small bottle of water between 2 people? Ate in restaurant at night. Service great food average. Desserts still frozen and tuna over cooked. Would stay here again if in Grantham but find somewhere else to eat. Car parking good plenty of room behind hotel.

"Town centre hotel with loads of history"

29/06/2016

Have stayed here often when in the area - claimed to be the country's oldest hotel, and to have had several kings sleep there, the A&R is a delightful venue with loads of character to go with that history. Located right in the town centre, the A&R has its own free to use car park but - because of its location - you can't pull up at the door for drop off, access is via a flagged yard. The hotel has 29 bedrooms over three floors but no lift; at least one ground floor bedroom has been fitted out for disabled access. The rooms have bags of character - like period piece furniture, large comfy beds - but also have free wifi and a bureau to work at; this comes at a price with the odd creaky floorboard and some older fittings being a bit below par on occasion. Outside noise is surprisingly limited in most rooms, as many of them face an internal courtyard rather than the high street. Evening meals range from around £10-£15 and all ours were of an excellent standard this time - given the hotel's proximity to the town centre, a range of other eateries are easily reached if you want alternatives. The bar has a couple of local real ales on as well as your typical big brand alternatives. Breakfast involves a wide range of cooked items (including lovely local Lincolnshire sausages) and a good selection of pastries, cereals, fresh fruit, etc. Staff are regularly efficient and helpful on both sittings. Hotel has meeting room / conference / function facilities - not used.

I have been staying regularly at the Angel and Royal for nearly 12 months. One of the oldest Coaching Inns in the country the A&R offered me a warm and friendly welcome. Rooms are clean and good size and beds are comfortable. The food is very good so I rarely eat anywhere else even though the hotel is situated in the centre of Grantham. All the staff are friendly and happy to help. I am really glad that I found this hotel as they have made it a home from home.

"Beautiful building in a great location"

3
19/06/2016

We stayed for 2 nights at this hotel. I would dearly loved to have given 4 stars. But...there were a few issues which felt significant given the price tag. Starting with the positives, the staff were mostly friendly. It's a beautiful and historical building and the location is perfect for exploring Grantham. The car park is very convenient and not too expensive. We stayed in a room which was accessed from outside the reception, so it felt a bit separate, which we liked. The room and bathroom were a good size, the shower was very good and the wardrobe space was ample. We were please that we were not overlooking a road/traffic. On the less positive front, while reasonably clean, it wasn't sparkling. The carpet was stained, areas of the bathroom were mucky and the fixtures and fittings felt cheap (eg the net curtains were stapled up). The soundproofing wasn't great and we could hear people talking in the next room. I'm not precious about these things - and I don't like being a Debbie Downer as times are tough out there - but it wasn't a cheap stay. Had it been cheaper, these things would not have bothered me. We had breakfast at the hotel on our final morning. It's around £10 per person. This is probably a bargain if you're a meat eater, as you get a full English including Lincolnshire sausage, back bacon and black pudding as well as other things. We paid the same amount for the vegetarian option and felt completely ripped off: the egg and beans were ok but lowlights included half a field mushroom each and one horrible veggie "sausage" made out of squashed vegetables and rice (please at least provide Quorn or Linda McCartney sausages). It seems really unfair to charge the same for that as a full English. So we were unfortunately a bit disappointed as we'd had high hopes. It has so much potential, but for us, it didn't feel like that was being fulfilled.

Some good customer service but decor is dated and somewhat lets the place down. Hurt knee in shower which was met with no apology or question as to how I was injured. Pest droppings outside window was ignored and again no apology! Fire Extinguishers in Hotel corridors where the wrong colour coding in line with current Fire regulations and is a worry.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear tonyblackpool501,I'm, sorry to hear of your recent accident whilst staying with us .We have removed the shower screen that I understand was the cause of your injury & the pair of courting pigeons have now been banished. "Poor service and poor food"

14/06/2016

Me and my colleague visited this hotel for business on 8th and 9th of June. The hotel looked quaint from the outside but inside it was dated. The first night food we asked if we could mix and match the menus the guy serving is said no we had to stick to one menu. So we ordered the starter salmon roulade was very nice however the Brie in a bread bin left much to be desired. We both had steak which was edible but the chips were hard. The following night we had a young girl who works a few nights a week was very helpful she told us we could mix and match the menu and was shocked to find out the night before that we couldn't. She was very friendly and was always at hand. We enjoyed garlic mushrooms and home made burgers that were very nice. Breakfast the eggs were snotty however the beans were hot! The biggest downfall to the hotel was my colleague was in the shower mid afternoon and the shower door snapped and was hanging off which caused him to fall and scrape his knee. (Picture below) on check out he spoke to the lady with brown hair and glasses and explained what had happened she didn't apologise and didn't say anything else. My colleague being a health and safety coordinator suggested he fill out an accident form the lady was not bothered by this but let him fill one out anyway! There was no apology for his injury along with no compensation. Not that we expected but a sorry this has happened would have been nice. Duty of candour and all that!

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review

My wife and I stayed here with our dog during a house move and had a great stay. The hotel has such character and has retained much of its charm whilst being modernised. Some of the decor in our room was tired but this didn't detract from the experience. The restaurant and bar are lovely with really nice breakfasts and a great evening meal menu. The staff were all friendly and welcoming and the hotel is well placed in the centre of Grantham.

I stayed here for 2 nights on my own. I booked at the last minute and got a great deal, via booking.com. I drove to hotel, there is a car park at the back of the hotel, which belongs to hotel. Found it easily enough and there is a secure gate to allow you into the hotel. Loved what I saw when I first got there. It's an old hotel, right in the centre of Grantham The good bits: All the staff were very friendly, could not fault them. My room was lovely, spacious, well decorated, large bathroom. Great location, in centre of town. Lovely old world charm, in layout and decor, enjoyed sitting in lounge area. Not so good bits: The food did really let it down. Breakfast was mix of continental, and you can order hot food, which on both days just didn't taste good. I then ordered lasagna, chips and garlic bread on room service with cheesecake to follow. It arrived to room really quickly and was hot. It was bland and just didn't really taste of anything, the same with dessert. Such as shame as I did genuinely love the hotel. I would stay there again, for me it was great value, staff and venue lovely, shame about the food.

25/05/2016

having had an awful roast dinner we thought we would give the downstairs a fair shot, man I wish I hadn't wasted the money my main of lamb and sausage tagine with pilau rice was awful, dry sausages with some curry powder sprinkled on them, the rice was stodgy and poorly cooked, I swapped with my partner that will eat anything and he even struggled. the wedges the other half had and chocolate mousse was nice but nothing special. the young man on the bar was nice but was running around doing the job of 2 people. finally they need to dust, I wrote in the champagne bottle beside my table.

21/05/2016

We were very surprised by the quaint and lovely hotel. Our room was spacious and had an elegance about it. The staff were wonderful and the hotel restaurant was very good. The history of the hotel is the best part. The oldest inn in Britain founded by the Knights Templar as a hostel, visited by King John, King Richard III and where he sent for the Great Seal to confirm the warrant for he Duke of Buckingham's arrest, King Edward VII and even the current Duchess if Cambridge! It is a lovely spot as is the town of Grantham, birthplace of Margaret Thatcher and site of one the original Eleanor crosses. Well worth a visit and stay at this hotel!

Stayed here for 1 Friday night. Not worth the £96 pound which did include a cooked breakfast. Waitress in breakfast room not friendly and breakfast average. Fruit salad seemed liked it had seen better days. This could be a great place to stay with some investment in the curtain blinds for starters which kept falling down in both the room and the bathroom. Not a comfortable or welcoming stay. Unlikely to stay again sorry!

09/05/2016

Stayed for 2 nights in May 2016. Let's start with the plus points. Friendly staff who were very helpful. Breakfast was really nice, lots of choice and good quality. However the hotel itself is very dated and tired. Room was covered in marks, scratches, scuffs and worn funature and upholstery. Our curtains were hanging off the track, the bathroom blind was broken and was permanently down, stained sofa with very worn cushions. The carpet was threadbare. It was a good size but looked very unloved. Wouldn't stay here again, wasn't worth the price. No safe, no fridge, very, very, dated.

We stayed over the Easter Break, got a room for a fantastic price The hotel was very central, has loads of amenities on the doorstep which are all walkable (Asda, Lidl etc) we used the hotel as a base inbetween visiting the many historic sites around Grantham. The room was very spacious and beautifully decorated. The breakfast was delicious and the staff were incredibly friendly And although the fire alarm did go off at 1am on our second night stay, it was handled well and ultimately things like this are out of the hotels control!

Right in the center of Grantham is the Angel & Royal Hotel. It is mostly comfortable, a little creaky with age, but the atmosphere is actually quite nice. I actually would have enjoyed a little tour from the hotel staff, but they weren't especially interested in answering questions. Still, I went in the room where Richard III supposedly held court, and ordered the arrest of the Duke of Buckingham, and it is always interesting to imagine famous historical figures from another time. For modern tastes, the internet service is PITIFUL.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review

"Get Together of 9 friends (With 1 single)"

13/03/2016

We are a group of long time friends from all over the UK who meet up half-way(ish) a few times a year. 9 of us stayed on a Saturday night in February, taking the "Winter Warmer" offer. 3 of us stayed for 2 nights on the same package. It included B&B and one night's 3 course evening meal. Excellent value for couples but good value too for single travelers. Parts of the Hotel date back to 1203 when it was a Coaching Inn, frequented by Royalty. This is evident in the Restaurant (on 1st floor), which is large, spacious and has the most amazing stone carvings above the little bay shaped windows. It also has all manner of relics displayed including a suit of armour (great fun for photo opportunities), various old weapons and a tapestry. Lighting was bright enough to see but subtle enough if you wanted a romantic meal. Food and Service was excellent. We enjoyed a leisurely meal (great if you're having 3 courses) but were not left waiting as our Waiter was very quietly attentive as to when we were ready for the next course. Only slight down side was, due to the size of our party, we were seated next to the music system, but it didn't bother us and the staff would have turned it down had we asked. Breakfast was served in the Bistro downstairs and our large party was accommodated next to this in the Bar area. Again, food was excellent with a large choice. Lincolnshire Breakfast was really good (great sausages) but some other group members had lighter options which went down equally well. Service was very efficient and attentive. The rooms were spacious, well decorated, each with a different name, the origin of which was explained on a card in each room. Great facilities in each room: tea coffee and biscuit tray, a complimentary bottle of water (always goes down well), hair dryer of the move-able type (also a plus), trouser press, arm chair and 2 other comfy chairs, 2 fold-able suitcase holders, good sized dressing table, FreeView TV, proper glasses (not plastic) of a decent size and plenty of hangers. Very comfy bed. Heating is centrally controlled and it did get very warm at night, but reception will accommodate any difficulties in this area. I just opened the window slightly. (Yes, the windows open!) I was a single in a double room (102) and in no way felt like the 2nd class citizen I've previously experienced. Both my room standard and view was equal to the rest of our party. Staff were extremely helpful, very efficient and very pleasant and cheerful. Grantham is a great base to explore some wonderful nearby places (go to the Tourist Information website for the area). We went to Stamford, 30 odd miles away on the Sunday. It's a stunning old town; very beautiful stone buildings and a great place to eat nearby (The Millstone..... reviewed separately). Lengthy review I know, but I would highly recommend this Hotel and would go back.

The Angel is aptly named. Apart from its wonderful history and unique location it has been my saviour more than once. Traditional and removed from the usual style of chain hotels, the service is pleasant, parking adequate and accommodation comfortable. A real advert for Margaret Thatcher's home town - solid and reliable. I have a particularly soft spot for this hotel as it allowed me to sleep in the hallway after the whole region including the A1 came to a halt during a heavy snowfall.

06/03/2016

Lovely old hotel, amazing history and it didn't look tired at all. Plus everywhere including the room was spotlessly clean. Great room, plenty of space but bed and pillows too hard for my liking. Staff all perfectly pleasant. Stayed here due to breaking up a long train journey which I make a couple of times a year and because I stayed here before, the highlight being the Angel bar, full of character with a roaring fire. Which this time was shut despite being advertised as open as Fridays and Saturdays only which is bad enough. (I stayed March 5th). The small bistro bar is not the same especially when connected to s busy restaurant and the constant noise of staff servicing the restaurant, washing plates, cutlery etc. in the bar was irritating. So will try somewhere else next time. Shame.

Ideally situated on the high street, large free car park to the rear. From checking in to checking out the staff were always very friendly and courteous. A lovely historic hotel with a lot of original features. The bathroom could do with renewing but everything was very clean. Lovely breakfast that was freshly made for you.

"Cosy Overnight Stay"

5
01/03/2016

An old coaching Inn that has character, and typically the public rooms are compact. However, with open fire places there is a cosy feel to these rooms. That being said the room we were allocated was of a good size with all the necessary facilities, even if it was quite a walk up and down stairs. (Good exercise after dinner). The welcome was friendly and helpful as was the personnel in the bar and dining room. We found the meals, dinner and breakfast, to be of good quality and sufficiently substantial to meet our needs. It was nice to have a pre dinner drink sitting in front of an open fire which added to the overall atmosphere.

This Best Western is a gem of a place. Reception was very friendly, room was spacious, bed very comfortable and you could here a pin drop - no noise from anywhere. We were in Room 215. We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel and found the food to be of a very high standard - couldn't fault it at all. If you need a hotel in this area, then try this one. One point against the hotel is that as it is an extremely old but beautiful building there are not any lifts, so people with mobility problems would find it difficult in part of the hotel we were in. However there may be accessible rooms elsewhere.

Arrived early and were allowed to check in.Very friendly reception.Booked on half board basis in a lovely room with 4 poster bed.Service in restaurant was excellent and the choice of menue was good and no silly charges for certain dishes ie steak. Also the breakfast choice was superb and everything nicely presented.Couldnt fault the hotel.Grantham is a bit tired but there were some nice bits. The point of our break was to stay in a nice hotel not too far from home.

"afternoon tea"

21/02/2016

we booked for 5 people to have afternoon tea. I rang the week before as we had one lady who was a vegetarian I also asked for plain scone. when we got there the staff were really nice. food not so great only cheese option for the vegetarian , cake was quite stodgy and not cooked properly , asked where the plain scone was to be told they didn't have one but I could have a cheese scone . that was brought out very dry and just crumbled when I cut it. we all left quite a bit of food. to be fair they did knock money off as the choice for vegetarian was good. shame as I love the angel hotel, but I don't think we will be going again.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Stacey, I'm sorry you were disappointed with your recent afternoon tea as you can see from our previous review this is not our usual high standards for which we are inordinately proud of. Last minute booking for afternoon tea treat for young girls and their mummies! Treated really well and the girls made to feel very special ! Grown ups loved the bubbly too! Had a birthday meal here on 3/2/16. Staff were lovely, relaxing atmosphere and full of character and charm. Lot of information about the history of the building. Visited by several medieval kings and I felt like I was walking into a castle from the outside. Food was great but would be nice to have more than 2 vegetarian options. Champagne cheesecake is to die for!!

Husband was working in the area for a few days so I tagged along so that I could explore the area. We loved the hotel. Very atmospheric, steeped in history. Breakfast was lovely. Staff all very helpful, we felt very relaxed and looked after. We booked through booking.com and that site didn't actually give us a good deal, thankfully the reception staff explained that in future contact them directly and they would enable best price. Fantastic service. Hotel on high street so was handy for getting out and about. Secure free parking. Didn't see a ghost during our stay.

"Dinner in Historic Inn"

4
28/01/2016

We wanted to visit this inn due to its history....king john & Richard III amongst the past visitors, 7 kings in total have stayed here. The staff were friendly and gave us a historical leaflet about the building, reputed to be the oldest inn in England. We ate in Bertie's Bistro which was quite quiet midweek but both our meals were very good. I just had the haddock and chips but the batter was perfect and homemade chips. Great!

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Guest, We are thrilled you enjoyed your dinner & our wonderful history on your recent visit. We would love you to come back & maybe I will have the opportunity to take you on a full history tour of our fantastic building. Kindest regards Jane Green

26/01/2016

Stayed for 2 night on a business trip and training session at he hotel. The photos look great on the web site but once you get there is not that great. The parking is offsite and on a one way road, so if you miss it first time then you have to go around again and it's not well signposted. The hotel has some nice features but it sis not as luxurious as you would think. the staff were attentive. The food was OK but restaurant and bar very small. My room was good but it was too hot and I could not turn down the heat level as the thermostat was loose. I slept with the windows wide open in December. There are no lifts so being on the top floor was like a workout with the luggage.the business meeting rooms was nice but the poor internet connection made access tot the web frustrating all day long. Overall it was nice & clean.

"Another stay in Best Western"

4
24/01/2016

Having stayed in many Best Western hotel this is like many dated but quant. The room I had had a four poster which was comfortable enough the post was in the way of the TV had to move the TV to be able to see all of the screen. Breakfast was reasonable. Only real down side was the car park is at the rear of the Hotel bit difficult to find on the first night. When I rang the hotel the young lady that answered easily directed me would appear to be a regular occurrence. Eat in twice on one occasion got fresh chips the other frozen even though the menu said fresh. When I mentioned the waiter/duty manager said he would speak to chef that was it.

the facilities and food were great.. enjoyed sitting in front of the open fire in the lounge. the rooms were clean and tidy but was cold. this is to be expected as it is an old historic building full of history in march. our room was sloped and the window rattled in the wind. its an old building but so interesting and full of history. the stone arches and kings room are interesting. personally i loved the place

"One of the Best"

15/01/2016

Myself and two friends stayed at the Angel and Royal Hotel with our wife's on 21st of December and what a gem this turned out to be, all six of us booked for diner in the hotel and had a choice form the restaurant menu and Christmas menu some of us had starters form the restaurant menu and main course from the Christmas menus or visa versa and nothing was two much trouble for Danny and Christine who served us, Christine entertained us with her balloon modelling expertise. The food was fantastic and our room was a four poster and very spacious. Breakfast was very efficient and Michele the waitress could not have been more helpful, I am quite a fussy breakfast eater but Michele catered for all my needs. I would recommend the Angel and Royal whether it be for business or pleasure all the staff are very friendly including Jane the Manageress.

"Christmas celebration "

5
13/01/2016

I stay at the hotel most weeks on business with other colleagues. We decided to hold our Christmas bash at the hotel and we didn't regret it. As always the staff looked after us and the food was very good. I wouldn't want to single out any one member of staff for praise as that would be unfair on the others but we would like to take the opportunity to thank them all who served us on the night and through out the year. I would certainly recommend the hotel to anyone who wanted a good a break for both business or pleasure.

I lived Nr grantham for many years and never thought to stay here even though it's a beautiful old building, after having one too many I booked in being greeted by a lovely lady who was so helpful she checked me into room 105 which was more of a suite than a room and was more than reasonable at £75! I didn't have toothpaste so I rang down and was given a new tube within 5 minutes along with 2 large bottles of water, they were so helpful and accommodating the room had water biscuits and tea making facilities it was extremely warm and cosy I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!! Lovely hotel lovely staff who looked after me I shall stay again!! Hopefully more prepared

Just had a New Year Break at this hotel steeped in history, and full of character. We had a lovely time with friendly and helpful staff nothing too much trouble for them We upgraded our room which was very comfortable having a separate lounge area. The food was delicious especially the New Years Eve's Banquet. The hotel is in the middle of Grantham but does have an excellent car park

What a little gem this is. We stayed for a two night New Year Break and were delighted. The food was wonderful - not easy when catering for such large numbers. Excellent value for money and I would highly recommend.

Steeped in history , located on the high street so it's easy for shopping , restaurants and local pubs near by.( Football fans!!!! A number of pubs showing Sky and BT) Shopping centre , out of the hotel turn left and across the main road on the right hand side. The hotel has its own car park to the rear (secured by barrier) Staff very welcoming , the room was large and very clean.

"Five-star service"

28/12/2015

We have just returned from a 4-night Christmas break at The Angel and Royal and thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn't pay for a superior room but ours was excellent - a small hall-way with built-in wardrobes, full-length mirrors, iron and ironing board; a good-sized bathroom with shower over, toiletries, fluffy towels and hair-dryer; a large double bed (not king-sized but more than adequate) with desk, armchairs, wide-screen TV with lots of channels, wi-fi and well-furbished tea and coffee tray. The all-inclusive price was amazing value - 4 nights bed, breakfast and dinner with afternoon tea on the first day, Christmas lunch, even a Christmas stocking. The food was also excellent and the wine list was not overly long but reasonably priced. This is a very old hotel - one of the oldest, if not the oldest in England, so no lift for the less mobile, and sometimes creaking floorboards and corridors looking a little tired in places, but if you want real character and heart, this is the place to go. The staff are super - friendly, helpful, efficient - and seeming to take pleasure in their jobs. Thank you all again!

Centrally placed and a great historic feel. Car park around the v Back is really handy and whilst a short walk to reception it's a bonus. The decor and rooms are a bit reflective of the ancestors of the place but as a stopover room is adequate if not exciting. Breakfast was good and service was fine.

"St Valentines stay in four poster room"

17/12/2015

Lovely large four poster room, with lots of mirrors and lighting. Also large well lit bathroom with an excellent make up mirror. It was interesting being in a different part of the Hotel to when we stay at Christmas. We were booked in for a meal in The Kings Restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised and pleased that Jane, the manageress had remembered from our Christmas stay, that we liked an alcove table and had reserved one for us. We are now looking forward to our (?) 4th Christmas stay at this Historic Hotel.

10/12/2015

Stayed one night for b&b... Over priced big time... Car parking good, just to the rear of the hotel. Reception was polite but did not provide the usual information that hotels give you like the basic check out time, breakfast time and oh asking if you intend to use the wifi. Room was tidy and cleanish, had a four poster bed which scared the life out of me has it did nothing but creak, I'm not large before you say! Mattress had seen better days and was lumpy and bumpy and dipped to one side. Room dark in daylight, lighting useless. Net curtains hanging on by a thread. Toiletries mmmmm, good job we didn't want to use them. One small bottle of water for two people is not good enough, one person or just don't bother. Breakfast finished at half 9, we got there for about 9.15 ordered a few fresh bits which were alright, but whilst eating that the cold breakfast items where cleared away, I understand breakfast finished at 9.30 but I assumed like all other hotels that it was cooking ends at that time and if your still in the resturent you could still have juice, cereal and pastries. Like I said over priced, it's a £30 hotel...

"nice friendly staff, lovely building but dont go when theres a party"

4
07/12/2015

the staff we found to be very nice and friendly, one receptionist in particular helped us by printing directions to lincoln as our sat nav broke. the room was nice and clean the only faults we had was that there was a party on and we had the room directly above it so we couldnt get to sleep and the room was so hot i didnt sleep well at all!!! we turned all the heaters off, had the windows open and it was still sweltering!! to say i was unhappy was an understatement (its not often we get to have a night away without or children so i was looking forward to a peaceful nights sleep) the breakfast was really nice i had a sausage (really nice) egg and mushrooms, my partner had a bacon bap. however i need my coffee in the morning, a nice coffee, unfortunately the coffee was awful!!! i couldnt drink it and neither could my partner so we had to o to a cafe for a coffee straight from having breakfast. even with the faults though i would stay again, summer might be best so the heating off though.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear Chloe, Thank you for your comments on your recent stay with us & hope you will return when the Christmas party season has ended for a more restful night. Kindest regards Jane

"Very cosy"

07/12/2015

Got in late (a bit of a hike from the rail station but easy to find in the town centre) and no problem checking in. Stayed here since I had to travel to Nottingham after an evening meeting in London but due to rubbish evening trains service it was better to stop over in Grantham and take a short train ride in the morning. It's an old place so there are creaky stairs to climb but the room is well equipped. Windows could need a bit of TLC, opening and closing was a bit of struggle, it was quite warm. Still it was comfortable and the breakfast was excellent, although if you go for porridge ask to have the syrup supplied separately. It has great ambient feel and I would be happy to stay over here in future.

On the positive side this Hotel is ideally located in the centre of Grantham and the four poster room we stay in was large and comfortable with a very good shower over the bath. The hotel has a very interesting history and it retains much of the character of an old coaching inn. Not a problem for us but people with mobility problems should think very carefully about room locations. The radiator in the room was not working but for us the heated towel rail in the bathroom was more than adequate to heat the whole room. The plastic hooks on the bathroom doors were not very good and twice fell off during the course of our stay. We stayed for dinner on the first night and the food was very good if moderately expensive. A pity the same can not be said about the breakfast service. I look forward to a good full English but by the 3rd day I was down to a few elements that I thought the breakfast chef could not mess up -having rejected hard cremated bacon, disintegrated scrambled eggs and tasteless baked beans. The waiting staff were friendly enough but the lack of a properly cooked breakfast was a big disappointment. There a plenty of good breakfast alternatives in the Town Centre so shame we had paid up front! The free WiFi worked well in the room although the arrangement for obtaining the code was a little quaint. Finally the car park was large and convenient but the directions on the website were useless and we did a few circuits of the town's challenging one way system before finding a way in!

Stayed here for wife's birthday with our little boy. Nice hotel but if being picky probably needs a lick of paint here and there. Room was plenty big enough for the 3 of us and kept nice and warm, chimney breast in room and warmed by large log fire in reception. Staff helpful and pleasant, no real faults a nice pleasurable relaxing stay. Will visit again I'm sure, a truly beautiful building. Thumbs up.

"Nice rooms but blunt staff"

20/11/2015

This place is right in the middle of town, has a car park a short walk away and I had a lovely room (two actually, as it had its own living room as well as a bedroom). Sadly it wasn't anywhere near as good a stay as I'd hoped. Firstly I arrived quite late and the staff seemed less than impressed and a little blunt - this wasn't limited to reception, but the bar as well. The room was also heated to a ludicrous level, so I got little sleep, despite turning off the three heaters and opening the windows. Surely people can't sleep when its this hot! The wifi was free, but pretty poor for netflix and dropped out in the bar quite often. Lastly the food was pretty average. The menu isn't very expensive, but I wasn't too impressed with the meal and breakfast wasn't great either.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review

"Nice but a bit past its best"

18/11/2015

Stayed here recently just for one night. Check-in staff friendly and efficient. Lots of secured parking at the back of the hotel. Room was pleasant and had everything you need - big TV, coffee/tea, biscuits, iron - but the bathroom looks in need of a makeover. Better lighting would make such a difference, very dingy and unappealing. Shower was hopeless, very powerful, loads of hot water but shower head seemed to be broken and just pointed straight down. It was a very windy night and, as the window catch was broken, I was up at 1am stuffing bits of paper into the window recess to stop it sliding open and blowing a gale through the room. Breakfast very good and served by pleasant, smiling staff. Nice hotel, that just needs a bit of attention to small details and it could be great.

Jane G, General Manager at BEST WESTERN Angel & Royal Hotel, responded to this review
Dear danrSuffolk, I'm sorry to hear you had a disturbed night's sleep. We have checked the windows were possible & rectified. Hopefully you will be able to visit us again & enjoy a restful night. Kind regards Jane

Sunday dinner was not good, cold food, they had several attempts to put correct it. Next table had same problem and prompty left ( they were locals and said a good carvery was available up the road). Room was good, breakfast good and service good.

Booked here due to being on a course at the hotel as a venue. First impressions from outside were good, receptionist on arrival was pleasant enough. Room was ok, but bathroom was tight for space. Nice and clean and bed was very comfy! Breakfast was ok. Not as nice as I was expecting. Food during the day was satisfactory. Car parking was excellent! Just to rear. Receptionist on check out was a bit unpleasant not very accommodating really and ended up in me leaving thinking she was a bit rude. Other than that, ok. Would I stay here again? If I had to.

"Nice Old Inn"

12/11/2015

Friendly staff, big rooms and great fine dining. I was told by staff this was the oldest coach house in Grantham. We was told it was haunted which added to the excitement of staying there. The steaks we had were beautiful and not to expensive, with the menu offering a lot of variety. Right in the heart of Grantham, with all the local shops nearby, highly recommended!!

20/10/2015

Perfect location right in the town. Pubs & resturants close by. Check in was swift & efficient. The room 103 was very nice separate bedroom & sitting area. Bed very comfortable with lovely white linen. Nice size. Bathroom a little dated but functional & lovely white thick towels.... On the downside it was in need of a good clean, the bath panel was dirty it certainly hadn't been cleaned for a long time. When hoovering more care needs to be taken to hoover next to the skirting boards in all the rooms, and the suitcase stand was very dusty. We had a drink in the bar which was nice but the seating was uncomfortable due to poor cushioning....car parking perfect...

One night only. Great welcome by Reception.. Terrific Room, comfy and clean.. Old yes, slightly faded but that added to the real building and the History. Had dinner at night.. Tasty, well prepared and served by a jolly and efficient team. Breakfast was very good and there was plenty of choice and again was served by a very pleasant young man, who seemed pleased to be there. There is an amazing History here, but pointless without the staff and the team that make it work..and they do exactly that. Just go and enjoy and think about all those generations who have been before, and then remember the people who are there now. They are a good team and deserve to be praised. Have a visit and see...

Chose this as a one night stop over to split a long journey home and we have used Best Western and Tesco points before. Check out the one way system and plan your route to the car park at the rear! Great welcome, lovely room, great service in the restaurant and loved the history of the building! See the pictures. They looked after my wheat intolerance without fuss, too. Would recommend.

"No Angel here!"

This is a Master class in a web site showing something as it would like to be but is not! This hotel is grubby, run down and depressing both outside and in...Rooms are the same, dark, looking onto a shabby filthy alleyway through dirty windows and old hanging net curtains & drapes, not clean either with someone elses hairs evident on arriving in the bath and floors...UGHH!!.....Breakfast was dire!...staff seemed nice people...shame really.

Dear Stephen F, We are incredibly sorry to hear of your disappointment on your stay with us, this is most defiantly not our usual high standard of which we are inordinately proud of. I will of course contact you direct so we can have the opportunity to restore your faith in us. Kindest Regards Jane

Amazing history. Look at the narrative on the walls behind reception. Wish I had a little more time rather than read them at breakfast on the way home. Massive room (10). So much character in this hotel. Nice breakfast, great staff. Good for business travellers. Large locked car park behind hotel.

"Excellent in all areas"

This hotel is excellent value for money. When I booked I had not anticipated such a high standard would be offered for the prices. Ok so the large rooms are not "boutique" but the quality of the furnishings and the housekeeping were excellent along with well fitted spotlessly clean bathrooms. The food was also good value for money. If you need a hotel in this area The Angel and Royal is a good choice

"A lovely building"

This was a lovely old building with loads of character. Our room was very 'average' though, needed updating. The food was very good, dinner and breakfast were excellent, as were all the staff that we met, all very friendly and helpful, a shame that the room was a let down. The beds we had were comfortable but were very narrow for a twin bed, also the shower we couldn't get to stay warm, little things but they let the place down, in fairness we didn't complain as were only staying over night. The carpet on the landing was grubby, had stains, do realise it costs a lot to keep everywhere looking good.
