"Where's Santa?"

4
Tim C, Milborne Port, United Kingdom 06/12/2019

It is close to Christmas, so perhaps it was understandable that there was virtually no room left at the various inns in Durham itself. Hallgarth is pretty much a marriage factory just outside the city in lovely countryside. Gardens looked gorgeous with a dusting of frost. They had one room left which was the "cozy" room. Cozy it was, but to be honest, still perfectly serviceable with an excellent bed and an in your face tv. The bathroom was tiny and dominated by the shower cubicle - it might perhaps have benefitted from an extra few inches stolen from the room. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, and indeed apologetic whenever they were dealing with someone else and kept you waiting for a whole twenty seconds or so! Only issue was that my room was above the hotel office and the two poor chaps who had drawn the short straw of the night shift not unreasonably chatted to one another all night - probably without realising that there is no sound insulation up to my room. Breakfast was excellent, but I was royally entertained by the panic of the absence of Santa. Given the time of year, the wedding trade was presumably in a lull, and to tide things only they were laying on a breakfast with Santa. So reception was dominated by deeply jaded parents and massively overexcited offspring who had wheeled themselves out for seasonal entertainment with the red clad old gent with a beard (and had come to the wrong place as the event was in the Mirror Room, whatever that is). However, it appeared that Santa had had a fairly serious Saturday night out and had failed to materialise. Staff were running around seeking a solution - I felt that a rock paper scissors competetion was about to be embarked upon to find a replacement. Anyway I had to leave to drive south, so I missed the denoument. However, for this guest, the breakfast show was quite the most amusing bit of inadvertent entertainment I had had at this hour of the morning for some years. Many thanks.

This hotel exceeded my expectations, despite being fully booked it was quiet and peaceful, all the staff were brilliant and went out of their way to help with anything! Would recommend to anyone thinking of travelling to the area.

"A great place to stay near Durham"

5
Geoff H, Leicestershire 16/11/2019

Apart from being a lovely building in a beautiful setting Hallgarth was set apart by the attitude of the staff who were without exception helpful friendly and engaging in both the reception and in the bar/restaurant areas. The food at breakfast and in the evening was really tasty and good value as were the drinks all were served with a smile. Our room was a cosy double so had a pretty small shower room which was fine for us but may not suit a larger person. It was recently redecorated and really nice

"Stopover"

Duncan F, Bournemouth, United Kingdom 28/10/2019

Last minute booking as we needed a stopover from Scotland back to London, we like best Western and it was reasonable for a quick sleep. All good ate in bar good wholesome food again reasonable price good selection for breakfast in lovely setting, room adequate and clean but bathroom was miniscule shower had to be the smallest possible enclosure all nicely decorated and spotless but oh so small and we are not overly large people!

"Very enjoyable stay"

V5568SJjustinm, Edinburgh, United Kingdom 08/10/2019

Stayed for 1 night in the Sanctuary Suite which is a beautiful room. The only let down with the room is you can hear the music from the lounge below, granted it's turned off before 11pm but it's also back on before 8am so if your susceptible to noise no change of sleeping in. Staff in all areas were wonderful and food both at breakfast and dinner was very well presented and very enjoyable. 1 slight improvement for the Sanctuary Suite would be addition of bath robes.

"Loud music"

scottyfish2018, Greater London, United Kingdom 30/09/2019

Stayed after dropping my son off at Durham Uni - hoping to find somewhere to regularly use when visiting him. Rooms are pretty basic, but adequate, shower could have had more power - stayed in room 6 and was subjected to the hotel music up tp 10 in the evening, then before 7.30 am in the morning - when I complained the response was we only turn it on when the first guests come for breakfast!!! Thanks for making me wake up then. The room directly below is some form of banqueting room, why the music is on in there when its not used is beyond me A pity, food was good, but they have lost a potentially regular customer, not that reception were really bothered!

Stayed one night in cosy double room. Room was very small the lighting was inadequate one small spotlight and small lamp. Hairdryer supplied but no electric socket near mirror, tea and coffee making facilities again no socket near the table so had to boil kettle on the floor not ideal. Bed was against wall only accessible from one side, no bedside table but a built in shelf where telephone and lamp were placed again not ideal so put them on the floor as well. Bathroom was really small and very clostraphobic. I did bring my concerns to receptionist who seemed very surprised that I had any issues with the room . The outdoor areas were lovely and well maintained . breakfast was good and staff in the breakfast room were really helpful.

"Nice place with individual feel"

Paul F, Chesterfield, United Kingdom 13/09/2019

The BW signature hotels are usually quickly different and this place was no exception! Love the interior design lounge area very cosy whilst the orangery was bright with lovely views out to the gardens. The pub was rustic with charm and a nice big wood burning stove. I stopped one night and ate here as well. Food was great and the waitress was bubbly and very happy nothing to much trouble. I had the steak which was very well cooked. My room was nicely decorated although small.

"great staff shame about the management"

2
stevenhG1483ZT, Doncaster, United Kingdom 06/09/2019

4 star accommodation do not except brilliance but do except clean and functional.Lets begin. Arrive after a full day, no receptionist, the bar manageress (Jennifer) who also appeared to be on cleaning duties (dustpan and brush in hand) helped us check-in. First problem room 4 was small dust covered and extractor fan in bathroom did not work( during our stay we were offered 3 rooms extractor fans did not work in any, possibly the thick coating of dust and grime stopping them functioning) and totally inadequate clothes storage for a three day stay. Jennifer was very apologetic and offered us room 6, larger, a little cleaner but still inadequate storage. It appears they are all the same. The sink in this room emptied at such a rate as to be none effective, no fan, accumulated dust on areas, cobwebs, nice view over garden. we were then offered room 9 the next day, similar size, similar dust layer, fan did not work, and sink would not hold water due faulty/damaged plug system. we stayed put was not worth moving everything. That evening i was a little disappointed to find the "traditional ales" in The Tavern were bottled only. On a positive note all the female staff were cheerful, helpful and apologetic for any problems whilst male staff seemed to have an attitude problem. The breakfasts were excellent and the roast dinners as well as other restaurant food was of a high standard. Whilst i will say we were compensated in the final bill. This is our first time in a Best Western the second one needs to improve greatly for there ever to be a third.

Only spent the night and didn't have breakfast hence can't rate that, however the evening meal was lovey and good choice for gluten free options! Staff friendly and helpful. Service great! Would def stay again. Bedroom good there were some scuffs and wall marks but that's end of season for you. Bed comfy and bathroom lovely and stocked with standard stuff. May be worth thinking, in these anti single use plastic times, of changing from mini bottlers to a better recycling method of products, but appreciate these are probably what tourists expect. Thank you for a good stay, from a weary traveller!

My partner and I have recently moved to the Durham area and it's proven very difficult to find good food venue. We have been let down time and time again. My partner is a vegetarian and he found the nut roast absolutely delicious. In his words “the best meal I've had when eaten out since I've been vegetarian” I had the chicken liver parfait which was perfect and pizza for main. Highly recommend

"Beware the 'cosy' double rooms"

2
1holidayseekers, Northampton UK 28/08/2019

The hotel location is great and the presentation is very tidy. Lovely gardens and nice decor. All the staff we encountered were extremely friendly, helpful and welcoming. We booked two double rooms on different nights as part of a round trip at the same time through booking.com . We thought the 'deluxe' double room on the first night (room 1) was very good. However... ...the 'cosy' double room (room 7) we stayed at on our return trip was anything but 'cosy' (adjective: giving a feeling of comfort, warmth, and relaxation), I can only describe it as cramped. There was nowhere to put our cases, no chair, no desk or work table - simply no room for anything in the room other than the double bed and two bedside cupboards. I'm not used to making the complimentary tea and coffee on the floor because there is nowhere else to do it, and the ensuite, though nicely decorated is way too compact for many adults. I'm guessing any bloke 15 stone or over would face a challenge in it (I'm not but still found the shower a problem). To be fair, the size of the 'cosy' double rooms and the deluxe double rooms is given on the hotel's website and I missed that when booking, so take the blame, but on later reading I don't think the description matches the reality. We felt that the 'cosy' room didn't give good value for money and that the facilities in it were poor. Nice try, but too cramped. I'm dumbfounded as to why the better deluxe double room we stayed in on the Friday was £20 cheaper than the 'cosy' double room we stayed in on the Monday. Other niggles - the website says Amex is accepted - I booked with it online but in fact it isn't accepted at the hotel. I was told that this is a 'work in progress' but from previous reviews I've read, that seems to have been the case since last year.

"Farcical "

1
MofromYork, York, United Kingdom 27/08/2019

I had already seen a review mentioning the rude receptionist- she didn't disappoint! The rest of the staff were really friendly but completely under staffed and in some cases with no customer service training - they were trying really hard but given three weddings in on consecutive days plus ordinary guests, management need to pull their socks up and recruit more staff and ensure they are given some decent training! We were allocated a cosy double instead of the deluxe double booked. I wasn't aware of this until I checked the website on the morning of checkout. The infamous receptionist was not apologetic, she was defensive and blamed the ‘system'. Eventually called her manager who went through the same defensive reason of blaming the system and not even removing blue food prep gloves the whole time of going through the issue? Was she the head receptionist or filling in for the chef?? I did get a partial refund after demanding one but otherwise they would have brushed it under the carpet! Did I mention we asked for an iron.... the receptionist forgot who had asked so we never got it.... Other issues.... waiting to be served drinks as not enough staff on to deal with the wedding.... Waiting ages for to have our dinner order taken... then they got it wrong. But when the food arrived it was of an excellent quality Breakfast at 9am - no staff, run out of buffet food. What staff that were there were rushed off their feet and started every sentence with ‘sorry'. They were friendly and wanted to do a good job but when you are run off your feet due to under staffing what chance did they have? ‘Cosy Double' Room 7 - if you are over a size 16 don't book it because you will physically not be able to get in the shower !!! And possibly sitting on the loo might be suspect too. It is a very long time since I've felt obliged to do a review like this! I stay in hotels a couple of times per month and I know what I'm talking about! This is beautiful hotel, nice grounds and perfectly situated but was let down by its management allowing a rude receptionist to continue in employment and for the rest of the staff to be over worked and under trained. A real shame - such a lost opportunity!

"Lovely"

4
Simmo2505, Essex, United Kingdom 11/08/2019

Lovely stay, as per previous visit, however on this occasion we've left feeling a little let down. This is such a hidden gem, beautiful food and rooms. On our arrival on Saturday 10th August however we felt like second class guests. I am presuming as we were not part of the wedding party that was taking place we weren't a priority. We arrived approx 1pm and were greeted with a frosty reception at “reception”. Luckily our first impression on this stay was saved by a lovely young lady at the top of the stairs offering to take our luggage to our room and offering local knowledge and info. This was followed by great service from bar staff, so all in all a pleasant stay but maybe front of house could learn from other staff members in basic hospitality.

"Nice place in a lovely setting"

4
nsoulxx, Rossendale, United Kingdom 08/08/2019

The surrounding area is beautiful. Grounds are gorgeous, especially the garden and trees outside the breakfast area. Reception a bit shabby, needs a make over. Colours in the lounge are a bit cheap and bold. Rooms are very nicely decorated but my bathroom door opening inwards meant it was hard to walk in and get to the toilet without squashing down the side of the sink, closing the door then same on way out. Dust in bedside tables and around edges of carpet but clean otherwise. Staff very friendly. Breakfast waitress lovely. Dinner waitress, young girl, really nice and helpful. Debbie who does the bar and was also on reception was really nice booking us in late and offered to make me a sandwich which I had. She brought it up on a tray with an iced water and a drink from the bar. Really helpful and kind even though busy. Checkout easy. Pleasant stay and would stay again.

Stayed here at the weekend for a wedding. Wonderful staff, very welcoming from the moment we arrived. The food was excellent, service was spot on and we were very well looked after. Rooms lovely, clean and well thought out. Beautiful setting for a wedding, lovely grounds and gardens. Only negative which was the amount of wasps, I know this is beyond control, but measures could have been in place (ie jars/traps in trees & on patios etc, not difficult to put together). It is a lovely hotel and I will return in the winter for a christmasey weekend. Thank you Hallgarth.

"(Almost) comically rude restaurant staff"

1
StevieCfb, Durham, United Kingdom 01/08/2019

We've had a couple of meals in the Tavern restaurant here in the last few months. The food wasn't too bad either time, though the fish and chips was a bit greasy. Given it's essentially pub food, but priced rather higher, I couldn't say it is good value for money. It's the staff who let the place down. I thought the first time was an aberration; the second time, it was worse. We arrived and the woman at the bar appeared to be writing a bill. No greeting, no "I'll be with you shortly", and certainly no smile. We waited, and then she turned her back on us, walked to the back of the bar area and continued what she was doing. I've never seen anything like it! We should have left, but we'd walked some distance and were pretty desperate for a drink (which was offered, probably 10 minutes later).

686suec, Grays Thurrock, United Kingdom 01/08/2019

Here we again at Hallgarth Manor Farm one of our favourite places. We travel up from Essex to see our children and grandchildren and wouldn't stay anywhere else we just love it here. It's not the plushest hotel we have ever stayed in but it's certainly one of the most comfortable. We always get a comfortable huge bed big enough for 4 people with lovely crisp white sheets. The last 3 stays we have had a garden view including this one and it's lovely and peaceful. We only stayed 1 night this time as my daughter is having a baby so I'm off to spend 2 weeks with her and grandad is off home so it was nice to enjoy some luxury before I go to bedlam! There was tea and coffee although not lots of it but I know they would give me more if I asked. The room is basically furnished, no wardrobe which as I said before is fine for 1 night but when we stayed for 3 days was a bit tricky. There are no drawers for clothes but a unit where you hang your clothes and a shelf for smaller items. The bathroom is nice I just love the tiles and I want mine done the same, toiletries available which I was grateful for but no loo brush which my hubby doesn't understand but I do lol. Plenty of towels and a lovely showers which was a good size. As soon as we got there after our 5 hour journey we just lay down on the gorgeous bed and went to sleep. We went to dinner in the evening, the food is really good we recommend it from the restaurant here. When we got up we went for breakfast which was as delicious as always. The lovely staff couldn't be nicer especially the staff on the desk and the lady who did breakfast and was there when we arrived at the bar on Tuesday.

Had a lovely stay at this hotel with my wife whilst visiting Durham. The hotel was clean, nice room, good food and lovely garden. The diamond there though was a staff member called Jennifer who just couldn't do enough for us which was good as my wife is Vegan. Her sense of humour had us in tears she is such an asset for this hotel. All in all a good stay and I feel we will be returning.

TrevorL793, Warrington, United Kingdom 15/07/2019

Selected this hotel for our annual reunion meeting of former colleagues, as it is located near Durham which was easy to access on the park and ride scheme. All the staff made us feel very welcome and could not have been more friendly and helpful. The rooms were very comfortable and well appointed and the hotel was set in a lovely location in the countryside. We decided to eat in the hotel restaurant on the first night and found the food absolutely delicious and well presented, and the service was excellent. We enjoyed it so much we all decided to repeat it on our second night. Again everything was superb. We can highly recomend this hotel, lovely rooms, good food, friendly staff and excellent service.

"Two parts to a whole."

3
Cordonbleu, London 11/07/2019

The two parts are, first, the hotel itself and, secondly, the restaurant. The hotel was fine. Clean. Comfortable. Nothing to complain about. Not so the restaurant food. Being in the middle of nowhere and without a car, on an excellent Dinner B&B deal, we 'eat in'. It must have been the chef's day off. The starters were so-so, but the main courses - a lamb dish, a rib-eye steak with thick fries and a hamburger with thin fries were served cold. (How long had they stood on the Pass?) The steak, which should have been medium rare, was overdone. Of course the dishes should have been sent back, but after an early start from London, a journey out to the hotel and a taxi back to Durham to visit the cathedral, feeling exhausted, one reaches a point of just not bothering. And so it was. Breakfast the next morning must have had the same chef, who can't fry eggs. I would have given four stars for the hotel and one for the food, so, rather generously, have averaged with a 'three'. (If you eat in the hotel restaurant and like your food hot, be warned.)

Booked on the morning of arrival and when we got there it was about 1-30pm we could not order dinner as their was a party in that were having a BBQ,but once we did if on the house because we had not been informed about the party. Once past this and everything was excellent, food, staff, bar, were all great, but what made it for us was one staff member that really looked after us, she went above and beyond and her name was Jennifer madrell.we made a point of getting her name just so we could write this review as she made our stay a lot better. Only problem i would say is the music from the bar could be heard in our room above.

Overall we were very happy with our stay. We were unaware of a function on arrival and delays with lunch it was suspended while they were serving the people at the function. The room was beautiful with an amazing bath, lunch and breakfast were very good. My husband and I would like reward and recognition to go to Jennifer Mandrell for her professional, polite and exceptional customer service, going the extra mile, and generally an absolutely fantastic member of staff. The only problem was the music from the bar could be heard in our room.

"Delicious Sunday lunch"

4
Thompas155, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom 23/06/2019

We came for Sunday lunch as we are looking for a wedding venue. The house is very quirky and the gardens lovely. We had lunch in the conservatory. The roast beef was the best I've had for a long the, very tender and flavoursome. The vegetables done beautifully and desserts were gorgeous. Too many desserts are just “plastic” cakes with no taste but here were delicious. I had the pear and almond tart which was lovely. The sticky toffee pudding seemed to go down well. All in all a really good find will be back.

Where can I start we had the most fantastic amazing day, the drinks reception was held in the orangery which is over looking the beautiful gardens, the canapes were delicious, the wedding breakfast was held in the lovely mirror ballroom once again the food did not disappoint it was absolutely delicious. Checking into our room was easy there where quite a few of us altogether so the lovely receptionist had her hands full. The rooms are lovely and quite spacious, the shower is amazing. So now for the evening reception the room was transformed so it could accommodate more of our quests, we opted for the barbeque but typical English weather it rained so it was served inside the food was once again delicious.Breakfast was served in the orangery again this was lovely with a good choice. From first being in contact with the manor house to arrange our daughters wedding the staff have been amazing they have accommodated all of our needs nothing has been to much trouble, the staff on the day again were fantastic and friendly. All of our guests commented on what a beautiful place and setting. We would highly recommend this venue

"A place with Soul"

Great place off the beaten track with absolute rustic charm and appeal. From the moment I entered the hotel, receptionist Jo-Jo, was extremely welcoming and her beaming smile told me, yep this will do. Now this cordiality was evident for our stay with ALL staff and more importantly, it was honest not pretense, genuine customer attention. Our room was very good with great power shower, comfy bed, excellent facilities. We dined in house during stay, compliments to chef, tasty cuisine. Summarise, great value for money, great location, excellent garden and atmostphere. Many thanks to all but especially Amanda, Anne and of course Jojo for initial welcome Am I returning, course I am You have a good team Christine

We stopped here just for one night on our return North Coast 500 holiday. The hotel is in lovely surroundings and the rooms were huge. Th room was clean and well proportioned with tea and coffee making facilities. We ate in the Conservatory on the Sunday evening and the roast dinner was excellent in both quality and quantity. The staff were extremely polite and willing to help you with anything you required. Will look o stay here again when we are heading that way.

"Warm welcome at Hallgarth Manor House"

User 10/06/2019

My husband and I stayed here recently and were very impressed with Hallgarth Manor. The rooms are exceptionally good value for money and we had a lovely view of the gardens. The rooms and public areas are nicely decorated. Breakfast was very nice with plenty of choice and unlimited tea and coffee. All of the staff were very friendly and helpful, which made for a very warm welcome. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others and hope to visit again.

"Disappointing with no attempt to address my concerns"

2
User 10/06/2019

Having booked a de-luxe double I arrived on Wednesday evening 7th June to find I was in room 20, on the top floor. Walked in and found a very small room with no desk or chair from which to work.It appeared they were missing? Downstairs to query that this was a de-luxe double to be told it was!! The photos on the hotel website show my room as a "cosy double", the de-luxe double photo being on the first floor was a room that was completely different and in my opinion one that I had booked and paid for. I registered my disappointment and suspicion that I was not in a de-luxe double room and that the lack of a desk and chair (as shown on the photographs) was a real disappointment and that this room failed to live up to my expectations. A message was sent to the Manager expressing my concerns. Thursday morning I was out after breakfast (no update received then, probably too early) but noticed two other rooms, near mine where the occupants had checked out and left the doors open, that these rooms both had desks and chairs. Out working that day, I returned on Thursday evening to find nothing from the hotel Manager or anyone else and nothing had been done to improve the room, move me to another room perhaps or simply finding a desk and chair in my room - never saw the Nespresso coffee machine but that was of little importance to me. Thursday evening there was a large wedding party assembling and so I presumed the hotel was full at that stage. Friday morning arrived and on checkout I was presented with the bill for full payment even though my room was paid for and all that remained was the cost of meals taken. That was when I asked about my room problems and if the person I was talking to was aware of the issues raised on Wednesday. it turns out they were waiting for me to contact the staff again, I presume on Thursday morning or evening? Somewhat surprised at this I asked why it had not been possible to leave a message for me, in my room perhaps on Thursday evening when returning to the hotel to find that a some action had been taken to address my concerns and disappointment. A change of room perhaps, or just putting a desk and chair in the room. I am taking this further so will stop here. Suffice it to say that according to the website photos, I was not given the room that I believe had been booked and do not accept that, based on these photos, room 20 is correctly classified as a de-luxe double when compared to the images of the rooms on the first floor. As a business user I have stayed at many BW hotels as well as Premier Inn and this is the first time in 15 years of travelling that I have felt mislead by the basic description of a room being at odds with the reality and that the hotel staff responsible for helping to address my concerns have done absolutely nothing other than indicate on checking out that they were waiting for me to contact them, hardly a proactive approach. Very Disappointing

leightaylor1, General Manager at Hallgarth Manor House, BW Signature Collection, responded to this review
Thank you for your feedback. I have investigated this matter upon returning this morning from my holidays. The evening you aired your concerns we were fully booked and the receptionist had stated if upon leaving the hotel the following morning to go about your day if you were to see the morning receptionist we would of course move you rooms for the rest of your stay due to the dissatisfaction of your current double deluxe room. As you did not we could not move you rooms as we do not, under any circumstances touch personal belongings of any of our guests. Had there been confirmation in the morning we would have actioned a room move immediately. We have double deluxe and double cosy rooms on the first and second floor and I can assure you your room, although not the exact room you seen on the website is in fact a double deluxe.

"Outstanding Staff, Service and Venue"

User 05/06/2019

I travel around the country delivering workshops and corporate training events . The Hallgarth is a wonderful location not just to stay and eat but to deliver events and meetings . The gardens are beautiful and perfect for lunch or break out groups and the outside dining area is another option for a quiet space to learn . Amanda was fantastic and served a wonderful lunch, delicious hot good , the mirror ballroom or smaller meeting room are both perfect depending on your group size . Christine the Head Receptionist ensured my event ran smooth and was available to hand for anything I or the group required . A training venue can make or break any workshop and I have to say that the outstanding service made every delegate feel valued , comfortable and ready to learn . I cannot thank you enough for your help yesterday and I will be recommending the hotel to my clients as a fantastic place to hold events . Thank you so much .

The hotel is in a perfect location close to the A1M but far enough away to be tranquil. The staff are all very cheerful and can't do enough for you to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Great leisure facilities in the spa, gym, pool and a nice little golf course. Highly recommended.

This is a charming hotel in what was an old Manor house. The rooms are pleasant and have tea and coffee making facilities. The rooms have hair dryers and lack only a fridge. There is ample parking here and the grounds are very pleasant. The staff are also very pleasant.

"No food available on a Saturday night"

3
Kath F, Durham 01/06/2019

We live very local to this hotel and decided to go tonight (Saturday 1st June 2019) for a meal, only to be told that no food was available as all the chefs were attending to the BBQ for a wedding function. We had been assured in the past that this would not happen and locals would always be welcome and catered for, this is obviously not the case. Another couple, who are expecting to get married at the hotel shortly had also come for a meal - they were disappointed as well.

leightaylor1, Manager at Hallgarth Manor House, BW Signature Collection, responded to this review
As previously explained we had a hold on food for one hour due to a function being held at Hallgarth last night as this function was extremely large and we had no oven space left. The hold came off at 8:30pm and meals could have been ordered and served from then onwards as our kitchen was then prepped to do so. (We very much recommend booking to avoid disappointment) I can once again assure you that we are extremely grateful for the support of local people from the village and your business is very much appreciated. However, it saddens me that you deem it necessary to tarnish our name on trip advisor and social media due to this incident.

"Attended a wedding"

3
Sc00byD0, Devon, United Kingdom 30/05/2019

Invited to a family wedding, the wedding reception was held here, the room was not quite ready for us, se we got a drink in the bar area. On arrive to the venue, the room was set out for a wedding breakfast although we were having a BBQ meal. The food was served on a long table so that you could serve yourself from large trays over heaters. The food was ok although one of the guests on our table is celiac and had a bad reaction probably due to cross contamination maybe by the use of tongs?

leightaylor1, Manager at Hallgarth Manor House, BW Signature Collection, responded to this review
Good afternoon, thank you for your feedback. Just to clarify, on arrival the reception drinks are held in the bar area where all guests gather prior to entering the room as we always show the bride and groom their room first as it is their wedding day and the function suite was set up as per the brides wishes. Also to note, the trays which we serve hot food from on the buffet table, which tends to be a long table for customer flow are called chafing dishes kept hot by gas underneath them and are used frequently it hospitality. We take dietary requirements extremely seriously so had we been informed of specific requirements we would of course provided a meal prepared separately from the rest of the food on the buffet.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hallgarth Manor House. The staff ‘made' our stay! Friendly, warm, helpful and fun! The chef - amazing top quality food nourishing and with natural and local ingredients. Nothing fast food all great country cuisine that would easily match a city restaurant! The Mano is gracious with spacious rooms - ours looking out onto the beautiful gardens. Yes we will stay again and Thank you to all staff for making our stay memorable and enjoyable.

Stayed here for an overnight night visit, as we were going to a wedding close by. From the moment we arrived we knew we had chosen the right hotel. The staff were so welcoming and accommodating, and we felt instantly at easy. The room it's self was clean, and had everything we needed for the night. Throughout the night we heard a few guests coming back late, however apart from that the hotel and it's surroundings were peaceful quiet and we got a goodnight sleep! We are early risers and had breakfast not long after 7am which is when breakfast starts, the kitchen staff were again friendly and explained we may have a small wait as all food was cooked fresh (which is not bother at all) but in the meantime to help ourself to the continental breakfast, which was also very nice! The hotel isn't to far to and from travel to Durham city Center, about ten mins in a taxi which cost about £14 ish, but it was worth paying the extra and staying in the beautiful hotel. We would definitely return!

"Disappointing"

1
jockstar2015, Telford, United Kingdom 01/05/2019

I was expecting much better given that this is billed as a "luxury" hotel and also after reading mostly good reviews on TripAdvisor. Maybe it was because there was a wedding also on the day we stayed but come on surely a 4 * hotel can cope with a wedding plus normal hotel guests - it's not like they didn't know they had a wedding in the diary for that day! 1. The staff - no evidence of any management or organisation - they don't appear to have had any training in hospitality and just seemed to be muddling through 2. Room -hairs in the shower and toilet not cleaned behind the seat (urine stains - disgusting); walls in the room need painting; window seat had bits of crumb/fluff/dirt on it; no bottled water; no hairdryer and the soundproofing is appalling - you can hear next door, above, below, corridor....... 3. Food is good albeit overpriced and the "pub" is dingy, lacking atmosphere and as mentioned the staff don't seem to know who's doing what Such a shame because it has great potential to be really good but I'm afraid I won't be going back when I'm next in Durham and it's put me off Best Western hotels too unfortunately because it wasn't what the marketing made it out to be at all

"Surprise overnight business stay with super helpful staff"

5
ALSimon1972, Leeds, United Kingdom 24/04/2019

My company had booked a double room for me at Hallgarth Manor. However, a friend had decided to accompany me on my business trip. When I arrived I asked if they could change my booking to a twin room. The receptionist provided a lovely room overlooking the gardens. Due to a late business meeting, I asked if the kitchen could provide us with sandwiches, quick turnaround, which they did without any quibble. I only wished I could have stayed for longer to try the restaurant menu, which looked really good. Thank you.

"Beautiful hotel, need more staff. "

3
TanyaA1, Glasgow, United Kingdom 21/04/2019

Rooms are lovely, though sound travels very well so the doors don't keep any noise out. We were there for a wedding and stayed 2 nights. The first night a few meals were not placed correctly and a couple of us had to wait another 15 minutes after everyone else was served for our meals. We were then accused of not paying for the meal (thankfully we had kept the receipt). The next day was the wedding and there just weren't enough staff, everything took ages to get, fridges weren't restocked, staff just had too much to do and I don't think it's very organised at all. And the final breakfast was a farce. Again I think they had 2 staff on, when the hotel was fully booked for overnight guests. Tables weren't cleared and reset, food ran out and wasn't replaced very quickly, no one knew if new people came to sit down so teas and coffees weren't offered. Just a bit of a shambles which is a shame because the staff were trying. The management need to spend some money on extra staff. Especially when you know there's a wedding and the hotel is booked out!

I've recently just had my Wedding at Hallgarth Manor on the 30th Of March and I just can not stop singing their praises. We first had a taster evening where myself & my husband went up to the venue and had a different three course meal each. The food was delicious, every course was amazing. The only problem we had was picking between all the beautiful meals. We had been totally spoilt for choice. Cassie was the lady who we spoke to the most regarding the wedding and she is just amazing. I can't thank her enough for all the help she provided us with for the day. She made me feel like our day was just as important to her as it was to us. Her team where fantastic! Full of smiles, couldn't do enough for you! The day wouldn't have ran as perfect as it did if it weren't for them all. Our room ( The Sanctuary Suite ) was beautiful! We had a lovely view of the gardens. The HUGE bath was great! If you are thinking of booking your wedding here do it! It will be the best decision you ever make! Our day was spectacular! The mirror ball room looked like everything I had imagined!! Service was impeccable!! We really can't thank you all enough for our prefect day at Hallgarth Manor!

This hotel was very clean and the staff very friendly. Really lovely social areas inside and out. We had a great meal in the restaurant too. The sound proofing in the rooms isn't great and we had a very rubbish night's sleep on our first night because of the adjoining room but the staff sorted a room move for us which was great. I would definitely recommend this hotel and if you can, go for the deluxe rooms they have much more space. Its only a 5 minute drive in to the cente of Durham yet you are in the midst of beautiful countryside.

"Dirty bathroom - but nice hotel"

2
9Emma4, Bolton 12/04/2019

Lovely building and the room was nice, however I don't think that the bathroom had even been cleaned prior to us getting there. The sink was covered in facial hair, the toilet roll holder was thick in dust, hair in the shower and the shower screen was very streaky. Could have been a lovely stay if it was clean. Disappointed.

We stayed here on the coldest night of the year, but the warmth of the staff more than compensated. The room was good although very short of hanging places for clothes. Nice comfy bed. Reasonable shower, but no bath. Main staircase carpet was a little grubby but snow outside didn't help. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast superb, dinner great and wine very good. We have stayed at this hotel multiple times due to the how fantastic and luxiourious it is. A friendly warm welcome awaits you from the staff, where nothing is to much trouble. The building is full of character, the decor is opulent luxurious spacious with lots of natural sunlight flooding through. They have successfully incorporated modern aspects without loosing any of the originality The rooms are gorgeous well designed and impeccable clean. There is everything you will need within your room, including a coffee maker. The beds and bedding are of the highest quality ensuring a good night's sleep. The rooms that we have stayed in have fantastic scenic views. An excellent choice for breakfast both continental and cooked. They use the finest ingredients and it was cooked to perfection. They also provide food throughout the day as well as evening meals. It is a really romantic place perfect for those weekends away. Where you have your every need attended to. We have stayed at so many different hotels as we are frequent travellers, yet this one is the best by far hence why we keep returning. A must place to visit.

"Disappointed in our stay."

After I booked my stay I contacted the hotel and asked for my room to receive an extra pillow and to book a reservation for 7 PM in the hotel restaurant, which I Received a message back from the hotel (Emma) confirming these are all set in place for my arrival. When I checked in we were not explained the WiFi correctly and I asked to check my reservation for the next day but she couldn't find the book to check so It got left. I was then told my check out was the next day at 11am but if they took the time to check they would have seen my stay was for two nights. When I got to my bedroom they was no light in the actual room only side bed lamps, the room was very dark even in the day time so we had to keep both side lamps on at all times. My extra pillow wasn't even added to my room so I had to walk all the way back downstairs to ask for a pillow then follow the lady and wait for my pillow and then take the pillow back up to my room. We went to breakfast the next day and they had no fruit on like they were meant too and when I ordered my breakfast I was far from impressed. The bacon and sausage you only Received one Of and the beans well they might of well of not even bothered they must have been less then a tea spoon full on. The next morning breakfast I asked for extra beans and might of well of not even asked but they was a bowl of bitter unfrozen Berries this time. My reservation for 7 PM in the hotel restaurant wasn't even added to the book but I wasn't informed of this I actually had to go and find out myself so who ever messaged me back basically lied and hadn't done a thing I requested. After everything that had went on we decided to get out of the hotel for the night and I'm so glad we did they was a beautiful Indian restaurant called amaani the food was out of this world but I would recommend booking I was lucky enough they made a space of us. The bedrooms are so small and I was in the Double deluxe room I dread to think how small the cheaper rooms where like. The bed had mud mark at the bottom of the blanket and they was a big cobwebs above our bed you couldn't miss it. The toilet started to leak on the last night after a few flushers too. I think towards the end of our stay we had given up any Expectations on this hotel unfortunately as to many small things Just kept coming our way and it all just built up in the end.

"Very nice Sunday Lunch"

pfc302, Chester-le-Street, United Kingdom 06/01/2019

Visited here for Sunday Lunch, we arrived quite late and got a table straight away, bar service was great and all the staff, whilst being young were very good. I ordered black pudding for starter, my partner ordered goats cheese, both meals were very tasty and generous sized portions. Main courses duly arrived, one pork and one beef. We both commented on how good the meat was and she also had loads of crackling, some of which I managed to pinch for myself!! Two courses was a very reasonable £13.95 per person and i think it was great value and deserves a lot more custom.

"A lovely break"

Stayed for 3 nights in what was a great wee hotel in the countryside but so handy for Durham city if you use the nearby Belmont Park & Ride (£2 per person return). Seaham is worth a trip (10 miles) The staff were friendly and helpful and the restaurant and bar were good value. There was much going on whilst we were there - a wedding when we arrived, a Christening celebration the next afternoon and the Hogmanay dinner and disco on our last night. None of these affected us apart from perhaps the Christening as the restaurant was set up for that so the previous evening we had to dine in the conservatory which was a bit bleak on our own and a bit chilly. Whilst the hotel did make the effort on Hogmanay we felt the disco actually spoiled it for many who dined, had a drink in the lounge/conservatory and then left! The disco (in the Tavern) was way too loud for comfort and I am no stranger to rock concerts! Breakfasts were above average with a good selection and choice of cooked options. Only complaint was the sausage which was billed as Cumberland. Believe me, I grew up with Cumberland sausage as my mum was from Cumbria and this wasn't even approaching the real thing. Why not just call it what it was - a pork sausage? Dinner was also above average and the Hogmanay dinner was better than the normal dinner in the conservatory. The fillet steak was cooked perfectly. I had the cheeseboard and it might have been a nice point to showcase what the cheeses were. I had no idea if they were local or just normal cheddar and brie. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would have given it a 5 were it not for the size of the room. We had a deluxe one which was meant to be larger than the standard ones complained about in earlier reviews but as I am tall the sloped ceiling (2nd floor room) was a constant headache for me. The bathroom door only opened halfway and so you had to manoevre yourself in - tricky in the middle of the night! Two other slightly annoying aspects: with the Nespresso machine came 2 cups - fine for espresso coffee but hopeless for trying to make tea with a tea bag and my wife pointed out that the only mirror in the room was 10 feet away from the nearest plug socket - fatal! But that aside we'd return but maybe ask for a 1st floor room the next time to avoid the headaches and bring an extension cable for the straighteners! Thanks to Claire and Margaret in particular for making our stay so successful.

"Xmas Day dinner"

Ted W, County Durham, United Kingdom 27/12/2018

Being local we decided to book the hotel for Xmas Day. Originally it was for five of us, but they managed to fit in my Brother-in-Law at the last minute, after he got stuck in the UK due to his passport being stolen. The staff were friendly and attentive from the minute we arrived. The atmosphere was great and so was the food. After a Prosecco reception, we had a range of starters, mains and desserts. To be slightly critical, the only fault was a fairly tasteless venison terrine starter. The other starters of salmon & broth were superb. The mains arrived with more than enough vegetables and gravy. The staff even respected our wishes to wait a while before they served the desserts. Again the Xmas pudding and orange treacle tart were excellent. Finished of with coffee and mint chocolates. Drinks were brought to the table upon request and "Santa" turned up on several occasions to give presents to any young children present. We all thought that this was excellent value and will definitely book for Xmas day again......Nobody has to prepare the food, cook it and wash up after, make the day even more special. Thanks to all the staff in Hallgarth Manor.

We Booked then read the reviews then wanted to cancel. I am so pleased we did not cancel. From friendly helpful staff to a beautifully decorated lounge and sitting area this place is a find. The entrance is grand and immaculate, no smells of damp as previous comments suggested. The sitting area has been decorated in stunning blues and aged pink colours, on the evening with the candles lit this is exquisit. We stayed in a deluxe double, I did find the room smaller then I would have expected f a deluxe and was saddened by no bath, however brilliant value for money. PROS- staff, entrance, decor, good portion food, bar area, excellent value for money CONS- hard to find, room smaller then expected Will return and recommend highly

Having booked the Sanctuary Suite as a surprise night away with my partner I was told 1 hour before we were due to check in that the room had been double booked. I had made the booking weeks ago. If this wasn't bad enough, I happened to have already spoken to the hotel earlier in the morning but nothing was mentioned. I told them we were only 15 minutes away and whilst apologetic all they offered us was a standard room with a complimentary bottle of wine. This doesn't even begin to make up for the upset and embarrassment that such a huge error on their part caused. I asked who made the booking first to which they advised it wasn't myself however I dispute this as when I booked the room I was looking on both their own website and Best Westerns website for the best rate. There was no offer of re-scheduling the booking either to another date (why not?). Since we were only 15 minutes away and had travelled for almost 2 hours we did arrive at the hotel to be shown some of the standard rooms in case we did want to take up their offer. We didn't. They were small, cold and smelt mouldy and overall unwelcoming. The foyer and bar area looked nice. My advice to you would be to call them up to double check your booking, and double check it again before you set off! It seems they prefer bookings direct on their website rather than via Best Western which offered me a discount which is perhaps why my booking wasn't taken/accepted.

Hallgarth07, Manager at Hallgarth Manor House, BW Signature Collection, responded to this review
We apologise for the genuine computer error which occurred. We attempted to resolve with a number of options which were not to your liking, including the executive rooms which you were shown. We do not have any mouldy rooms.

The room I was first put in did not contain what it showed on the picture or what it said on the website. No desk or seating, no coffee machine and no water. The second room was the same even though it was an upgrade no additional seating . It was not the staff fault the rooms are not all as per website description staff did try and rectify. My issue is The room should reflect the description. There would be no issue if people know what they are getting and they get it . The restaurant staff tried their best but one night people were complaining as there was only on staff on the trying their best but there was a run of customers so they struggled. One meal was good the other was ok. This was the ribeye it was not the best. Breakfast ok nice selection of fruit. Staff friendly at breakfast in fact they tried their best to help during the stay. Just another small thing the shower get was not replaced for the second night so had to get some emergency out of my bag. I'm sure they would have given me some but inconvenient when I realised early morning. Overall it did not reach the grade of good.

"Tiny Room"

3
User 04/12/2018

I have to say that I really enjoyed the stay at Hallgarth Manor House. We ate in the restaurant in the evening. The food was lovely, however apart from one other party, we were the only ones eating in there. The "conservatory" dining area felt cold although it wasn't. This room was fine for breakfast in the morning, but maybe using one of the other cosier rooms as the dining room in the evening would be better. The standard of furnishings in the room was high and the bed was very comfortable. The big let down was the size of the room. Potential guests should beware that a basic double room is tiny. We stayed in room 3. There is no desk / dresser or work space for anyone who is using the hotel for business. The bedside tables are tiny and 3/4 of the space is taken up by the lamps. We had to put the kettle and cups on the floor to make a hot drink. The wardrobe is extremely narrow so you have to fit clothes / coats in at an angle to be able to close the door. The Bathroom is probably the worst part. It is beautifully appointed and decorated. The shower is probably the best power shower I have used in any hotel. The big issue is the size and space provided in the bathroom. The shower cubicle in my opinion is not fit for purpose do to size. Guest literally have to squeeze into the cubicle and it is not possible to bend once in the shower or raise hands above shoulder level. This was the aspect that disappointed me most about my stay. Other than the size of the room and especially the bathroom / shower, it was a pleasant stay. I would stay again but would pay extra for a larger room and bigger bathroom.

"Fabulous stay in a charming hotel"

5
gerberas99, United Kingdom 03/12/2018

Hallgarth Manor We had a most fabulous stay at the Hallgarth Manor recently. We first visited the hotel 6 years ago but didn't stay for the night due to our tight schedule. This time, we made it a point to stay a night in this beautiful hotel, just for the experience. The hotel used to be a country home before it was sold to developers which turned it into the hotel it is today. It was recently refurbished - the rooms have been given a fresh, modern look, yet much of the charm of the house remains. The hotel is only about 15 minutes away by car from Durham City Centre, situated within walking distance to the historic Church of St Laurence. Ideal for a weekend getaway or for tourists who prefer a hotel situated in a idyllic, quiet setting instead of one in the bustling city. Although we stayed only for a night, the staff at the hotel made us feel so welcomed that we felt we had been there for days. Although we arrived earlier than planned (at around 11 in the morning), Margaret, the receptionist kindly allowed us to check in to one of the rooms first. This helped greatly as we were travelling with our uncle and aunt in their late 60s, and 3 young children (not forgetting a whole load of luggage). Another staff member, Ian, kindly helped us carry the heavier bags upstairs. (There isn't a lift installed in the premises, possibly to retain the charm of the original house). Another friendly staff, Christine, who was on afternoon shift at the reception, shared with us about the history of the house which we appreciated greatly. Rooms - We love the rooms! I had expected a small, old-lookiing room with simple amenities (afterall, the house was built in the 16th century). Instead, we were greeted with a warm, cosy and inviting room. The beds were very comfortable; the bathroom was clean, well maintained, and even equipped with heated towel rails. (I was particularly impressed with this feature, and especially so in winter!) There was even a mini Nespresso coffee making machine in the room to make the coffee drinker happy. Food - We had a fabulous lunch at the hotel's restaurant, The Tavern. We ordered the ribeye steak which was juicy and succulent, the best we had tasted in a long time. The slow-roasted pork belly, traditional fish and chips and margarita pizza were delicious too. The portions were huge, with interesting and tasty sides. Kudos to the chef, Tom, for the amazing food; and thanks to Amanda, the restaurant manager, for her superb recommendations and warm hospitality. Afternoon tea was a delightful assortment of beautiful desserts served on a 3-tier platter. They looked almost too good to eat! (I especially love the orange flavoured cake.) For the kids, there is a huge garden by the side of the house (just beside the dining room) where they could run around freely and be wild. Though the weather was chilly, our kids had loads of fun playing in the garden while we sipped on our afternoon tea. We enjoyed our stay and experience at Hallgarth Manor very much and will definitely return again. Thanks to the warm hospitality of the crew, we have wonderful memories of this very lovely hotel.

No wardrobes in hotel: 6 hangers, 2 small drawers, 1 small high shelf for 2 people for 3 days! No tissues, no bottled water. Remainder of a bottle of red wine stored in fridge overnight. Restaurant advertised but not available. Had to eat either in cold orangery or dingy "pub". Sunday morning hotplate not plugged in so food not hot. Had to plug toaster in for DIY toast. Staff mostly very friendly and helpful but needed training. Even at dinner, the paper napkins were tiny and one ply. At breakfast we had to ask for side knives for spreading butter. By Tuesday morning, had run out of marmalade and natural yoghurt. Waitress stood by table while my husband pulled a long hair out of his breakfast and her only words were: "The chef's a man". No apology, no offer to bring a fresh meal. The shower was great and there was a shelf in the bathroom.

I'd called earlier to arrange a bottle of prosecco in the room and left some rose petals to scatter in the room - which was no problem for them. We had the Lancaster Suite - a large room with roll top bath in the room, in addition to the spacious en-suite with a double shower. Large bed with provided an excellent nights sleep in Egyptian cotton sheets. Breakfast was cooked to order and was excellent with good quality ingredients, attentive staff.

We live locally and have been visiting Hallgarth Manor since last year for food and drinks in the bar and restaurant areas. I was not impressed with the staff who all seemed miserable initially but having recently seen a new wave of polite, happy and helpful employees, the service levels have risen exponentially. The food from the bar menu is excellent and always served with a smile. We recently took our new born son down and the staff were lovely with him. The venue itself is great but it is the people that make this place somewhere to enjoy, relax and keeps us coming back. Keep up the good work guys.

Lol) we were all so impressed with the function room, the bar, the hotel rooms were lovely and actually quite spacious compared to other hotels! The mirror ball looked absolutley amazing!! We have since been back for a bite to eat and the food is tremendous! A big thank you to all the staff who helped organise this and an extra thank you for the bar staff for putting up with us! We loved it all! Looking forward to tryin Sunday lunch as spied one on our way out last week and it looked delicious! Would highly recommend this for a wedding or any type of large function! This 16th. Century Manor House has recently been very tastefully refurbished to a high standard whilst retaining its character. Its location is very peaceful, away from the hustle and bustle but within easy access of Durham. We stayed in October for two nights. The welcome at Reception was warm and friendly. Throughout our stay all the staff from Reception, Bar, Restaurant and Cleaning were exceptional for their service and attention to detail. The room on the first floor was lovely, clean and spacious with a very comfortable bed, excellent modern bathroom and a view over the gardens. The food was excellent value. We had both breakfast and dinner in the Orangery Restaurant over the two night stay and the quality and presentation was excellent, as was the service. This hotel is a hidden gem and the Management must have a formula for selecting fantastic staff! They all deserve huge credit. For us Margaret's personal input made our stay a very special one. Christine on Reception and Amanda at Breakfast looked after us so well. We just can't fault this hotel. This is not our first visit, we have returned to it over many years and it just keeps getting better! We would highly recommend it, it's really worth a visit.

R90R, Kingston-upon-Hull, United Kingdom 16/10/2018

This has real potential to become a 4* hotel but at the moment I can understand why it's sticking at a 3*, we booked the Sanctuary Suit for 2 nights, the rate we got for this and breakfast both mornings was more than reasonable. The room 6/10 - so for me the shower was amazing, partly the sole reason I booked this room was because of the shower pics shown, I wasn't disappointed. The bed was comfortable and a super king I believe. The down sides - the room could do with a lick of paint, many scuff marks which makes it a little tired looking, to add to this, small things that could be rectified like the blind working and handles on taps, a hairdryer in the room etc. Breakfast 6/10 - nice, enough choice, catered for veggies. The vicinity it was held within was very in keeping with the country manor theme, we were able to sit looking out over the garden with little squirrels running about. Staff - 10/10 all staff we dealt with were very friendly and no problems at all. Unfortunately whilst there on the 2nd night we had to nip down to reception as the hotel had been playing ABBA music pretty much non stop all night - it would appear our room was above the bar where the music was playing and the speakers were in the ceiling therefore it was as if we were at an ABBA concert, we just dealt with this but once it got to 10pm and had switched to rap music this we could stand no longer - abba was bad enough! We were up early the next day and needed sleep so my husband had to make x2 trips down to reception to get this situation sorted. Overall a nice hotel, would recommend the sanctuary suit but the music parts really did put a dampener on things for us.

Arrived for the wedding fare for one last look as we have booked up our 2020 wedding, having visited many times we know the staff so it makes it more relaxing. On arrival we tried to book in and it appears when I booked forgot to put my surname down. I was known as Lee with nosurname. Very amusing with the reception staff and manager. The room was really nice. With parts of the building been listed the shower was quite small and a tight squeeze. The wooden beams inside the room gathered a lot of cobwebs. The bed was so comfy. We decided to eat in the tavern. The food was really nice. The atmosphere was relaxing. We also had breakfast booked. The presentation of food was really nice. Overall a very nice experience. The staff are really great. Always smiling and very professional. The staff have a good sense of humour and join in our conversation. One big happy family. Great weekend. Thank you all.

Thought we would give Hallgarth a return visit after last year's meal problem at hotel. What l find with this hotel is the staff are one of its greatest assets, found most to be very friendly and very helpful, credit to them. Had a slight issue with room when arriving, and this was dealt with quickly and efficiently by lady on reception and operations manager to our satisfaction. Food was very nice, good quality, and presentation of it was excellent, with a high standard of service in what l think it was in a new dining area from last visit. Found room to be very peaceful overlooking gardens, so nice to relax and enjoy the quietness and fresh air.

"Visiting Durham"

Was visiting Durham and looking for a nice Hotel to stay and come upon this Hotel so i looked on there website and showed dinner, bed and breakfast offer on the Sunday 23 September so i telephone and booked, when i arrived i was very pleased . the lady on reception made us very welcome then to our room which was large with shower room, very nice. later on we went down for dinner, a young lady showed us to our table and give the set menu which was set at £16,95 for three courses. When we booked we had a £ 25 pound each so i asked Clare the waitress about this so she said we could make this up in drink which i said this was unsatisfactory . we went along with the menu which had Goats cheese tartlet for starter which i believe had been made some were else come in frozen, the Roast Beef dinner come next with two roast potatoes and vegetables, on the menu it had said creamy potatoes which we never got, the Yorkshire pudding which must have been made in the morning and reheated in the microwave was to hard we could not cut it never mind eat it ( very disappointing), we had dessert and went up stair to bed, we had a good nights sleep. Next morning we come down for breakfast and greeted by another nice lady who looked after us ,the breakfast was fantastic. the room was nicely presented with every thing you would want. It's a shame we didn't get this the night before. When checking out the receptionist had not been told about the night before so she sorted this out for us , many thanks to her and the breakfast waitress for looking after us again. I blame the manager for not checking the menu and the chef who made our visit to Durham very disappointing again,

My wife and I stayed for two nights to allow a first time visit to Durham after watching our daughter in the Great North Run. It was lovely to enjoy a break in a quaint hotel far from the madding crowd yet only a couple of miles from the Park and Ride ( highly recommended for getting into Durham ). The room ( number 8) was very comfortable as were the beds and with lovely, creaky floorboards! Breakfast was fine as were the evening meals we had, although we were aware that on one night (Sunday), a number of guests were not happy with their meals. The staff were very friendly. We very much enjoyed our stay there.

We booked this hotel as a last minute break and were not disappointed! Close to Durham, nice, clean rooms (ours was overlooking the gardens to the back) comfy beds and I recommend the breakfast, lots of choice of fruit, cereal pastries etc as well as various cooked options!
