    « Run down dump »

They treat diamond reward members like dirt and don't honor the correct room reservations. To add injury to insult they stuck us with a room that smelled liked a chain smoker's pet urinated in every corner of it and the air conditioning unit was about to explode while it slowly added to the smoke smell. We will never stay here again. This place needs to be torn down.

    « Awful---Stay Away »

This place was the absolute worst on a couple different levels!! I did research on this hotel prior to staying and saw some great reviews along with some stating that they found bugs. The negative reviews were from about a year ago so I thought perhaps things have changed. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, we stayed. Unfortunately, the weekend we were staying was Thanksgiving in addition to a Hawkeye football game---thus, limiting our options of hotels to stay in. I further assessed the bed bug issue upon arrival into the room. We found nothing after checking the mattresses, headboard and side tables and thought we were in the clear! My husband and I woke up and didn't find bed bugs---instead it was roaches! See pictures below! When he went and talked with the front office, the woman was disgusted and apologetic. However, when my husband spoke with the manager (named "Mike") the tune changed. He seemed to think that it was acceptable and that "every home/hotel has roaches". What???? Is that an excuse? I'm not sure about you, but my home does NOT have roaches! We were booked for 4 days and he was only willing to accommodate 1 night, we ended leaving and staying elsewhere. What a joke!! He went on to tell my husband that there was nothing that he could do and that he was "smarter" than my husband. He also said that he didn't even want to come out of his office to address this because he knew what would happen. His entire approach was unprofessional and completely lacking any experience within the hospitality industry. Bugs and roaches seem to not affect this man and seemed commonplace within this establishment. Bottom Line: GET AS FAR AS YOU CAN FROM THIS PLACE!!

    « 15 minute stay »

I came into town after making a reservation through hotwire. This was a 3 star hotel, we checked in and the front desk lady was very nice. I checked into my room and my son saw something crawling along the wall. It was a nice sized cockroach. I put it in a cup and showed them and they gave me my moneyback. I talked to hotwire and the booked me into the Baymont Inn & Suites.

    « Needs Updating »

I stay at a lot of BW motels. I know this used to be a really nice place to stay. Staff was very helpful, but it just needs to get updated. Breakfast was "iffy" and that was disappointing as I plan on those meals as part of the value. Fitness room had nice equipment. Pool area looked to be nice. Quick business stay.

    « A great night to relax »

We had a nice night of relaxing with a very helpful staff (Andie ) with a clean room and very soft bed and a cozy fireplace. The location is close to both the VA and University hospitals so a great place to stay when having to visit loved ones that may be there. Also close to restaurants and Iowa University incase your going to see the games.

    « Disappointed!! »

This hotel was under massive construction. It was liking checking into and out of a ghost town. There were no employees there!!! Over 40 minutes to check-in and I was the only one standing at the desk. The bathroom was incredibly small. The breakfast was cold. No receipt under the door. The service was awful, awful, awful! The only nice thing was the large pool. No hot tub in the pool area either. It is too bad I wasted my travel cards on a hotel that was bad. :(

« What's worse than a hotel screwing up a family reunion? The customer service at this place. »

We had booked four poolside rooms (to be in a grouping) for a surprise family reunion / party to celebrate my father in law's birthday. When we arrived that afternoon to check in, the desk clerk told us that because we hadn't guaranteed our reservations with a credit card that they had bumped us and we now only had three rooms left in our block (only two in the same area of the hotel). What was even worse was that they were sold out and had nothing left to offer us (with the exception of a smoking room that smelled like a casino. The first problem with this is that we DID reserve the rooms using a credit card, but the desk clerk who took our reservation only used it for the first one and left the others without a credit card on file even though we were told at the time of the reservation that all rooms would be made under that card. The second (and much worse) issue is that this hotel offered absolutely no apology and made no attempt to make their mistake right. When you have four families coming together from different areas, you rely on the staff to do what they say so that you can have a stress free time away from home. This hotel did just the opposite and the way that they treated all of us (Caitlin in particular) with no apology was absolutely unacceptable.

    « Uneven quality »

I've stayed here a number of times and found the quality varies. This time, I was by myself in a double queen room. The room was pretty clean, although someone left a half full water bottle on the desk. I have had times when the housekeepers never came into the room despite our requests. The room layout was odd, with the toilet and tub in one place and the sink all the way around the other side of the room. This room was really dark, which is ok at night but a little depressing at the end of a long day. I like this area because it's convenient to a number of restaurants. I got a good price through a website. Breakfast was ok - waffles, scrambled eggs, biscuits and gravy, pastries, etc. Check in was quick and friendly.

    « Under construction »

Make sure to ask if the hotel is still under construction. There was construction debris actually floating in the air making the air quality questionable and the overall feel of the hotel dirty. The hotel staff was very nice but the manger was very inconsiderate.

« Shelter for the night. »

Our desk clerks were friendly and helpful, and answered our many questions. The hotel on-line promotional information states that parts of this hotel are being renovated due to "natural disaster." However, the restoration is clearly a work in progress. If your esthetics are such that you must have all amenities in A+ shipshape status, you might want to look at other (probably higher priced) locations. The pool was recently put back in business, but the bar and poolside will need more time and work. With continued work, this could become a good conference site. So, I think that staying here represents our part in keeping this facility functioning and on its path towards full repair. Most room items worked, the pool was fine, and the internet worked perfectly. Casa Azul, next door, offers tasty Mexican fare for our American palate. Don't forget to ask for their (10%) discount offered to people staying at this motel.

    « Weekend Getaway »

We wante to get away and had tickets to concert at casino. Thought would be fun to stay in a suite with great amenities. When we arrived we were told the room (with best amenities, I would say) that we had reserved wasn't available due to a mirror on a wall that had been broken. They said they would move us to another suite though. That suite, however, did not have a fireplace, outdoor patio or bigger hot tub on the patio. Instead we recieved only a heart-shapped hot tub. We were disappointed, but made it work.

    « Should have known »

Thought I was getting a good deal for an Iowa city trip being close to I was city and not paying the big prices. Guess I was wrong. The TVs do not work there is no signal and the man at the desk said it must be a cable problem and can tell his manager in the morning. I also ordered a loft room which is incredibly hot in the loft to sleep in and the special jetted hot tub the Jets do not work. All the carpets are pretty dirty and run down. Will not ever stay here again and hope to get some kind of Credit for nonworking appliances in the room.

    « Do Not Stay-Warning »

When we arrived the clerk was totally out of it, our bathroom had not been cleaned, still had the previous peoples shampoo, toilet had not been cleaned. The smell of mill drew was awful, If we could have found another place to stay we would have changed. One of the families in our group found another place, they slept in their car, it smelled so bad and noisy. AND the hotel would not refund their money.

« Great hotel for the price »

We wondered if this would be a low quality motel because of the cheaper rate but were pleasantly surprised. Very nice motel, clean, friendly staff, good breakfast, great beds. Would definitely stay here in the future.

    « Reasonably priced »

This must be the oldest hotel in the Best Western chain. Once we found the hotel I was not sure if we wanted to stay. We were able to get a room when we arrived. The room had a strange set up but it was for the night so we put our bags in the room and went to get dinner. When we returned to our room the television did not work. The front desk changed our room and what a difference. Same strange set up but the beds and furniture were much better than the other room. Not sure if we would go back unless they complete their renovations.

« Keep Your Shoes On! »

Of course when you travel with two cats, you can't be too picky for a pet friendly hotel. $40 pet fee is a bit excessive. This place feels like a time warp. Hallway areas have popcorn ceilings and the dust crumbles on the rug that hasn't been vacuumed since 1990. The bathroom set up is weird: toilet and shower in what feels like a phone booth, and sink is separate by front door. Shower has been regrouted a number of times. If you sleep on the far side of one of the Queen beds, your face is three feet from the toilet. The bedspreads are light and clean. There's dust on the headboards. Room has microwave, fridge, TV and coffee maker. The balcony looks over enclosed pool area (see photo), which is undergoing renovations. Art work fits with Canterbury medieval theme. The best part was the breakfast area. It is updated with granite and contemporary cabinets, lots of seating and good space. Food selection was decent. Hot: waffles, eggs, biscuits, gravy, sausage links, coffee, tea. Cold: yogurt, boiled eggs, juice, milk, cereal, bagels, pastries, mini muffins, bananas, apples and oranges. Something for everyone. This was the best part of the whole place.

    « Convenient »

This was a very convenient location, the property was okay and comfortable. However when we had a monoxide detector going off in the night, no one at the front desk answered our calls.Good location for activities and the University near by.

« Old, odd, and in a great location »

This has to be one of the oddest Best Westerns (or motels, for that matter) that I have stayed in. Let me preface this review by saying - the staff was pleasant and the room was clean. But, do NOT get a "loft" room if you are over 4' tall. So you walk in at the ground level, then up a flight of stairs, then into your room. After the initial shock, you'll dodge the stairs inside the room, that are right in your face as you enter. Now you are in the sitting room. How about climbing a set of creaking, very narrow and shallow stairs to your LOFT bedroom? Yeah. Not thrilled with it either. Oh, don't slam your head against the angled ceiling either. The bed was clean and comfortable. 2am trip to the bathroom? Sure, just try not to fall down the stairs on your way back DOWN to the bathroom. Great location. Will never stay here again.

« Should not be a Best Western Hotel »

I just drove cross country with my elderly mother and this Hotel has driven me to write my first online review because it was so BAD!!! The beds were horrible. The room was not clean there were pubic hairs in the tub. The truck drivers yelling down the hall to each other and smoking at the open doors up and down the halls. The "renovation area by the pool was a mess. The laundry and ice machine were out of order. The rude night staff. I would have left the hotel, but my elderly mother needed to rest so I cleaned the room myself and pulled out the emergency sheets take I travel with. This hotel does not fit the Best Western srtandards I know. I have stayed in over 30 different Best Western and this felt more like a Super 6.

« Very understanding, cooperate staff! »

If you have any reason to stay in Iowa City for medical purposes, I would select this hotel for their services, hours, and room costs. The staff is knowledgeable and understanding about hospital policies and hours.

« A little old but good value »

Traveling into Iowa Hawkeye terratory when you're a Minnesota Gopher fan is a little scary, especially when the 2 are playing in Minneapolis. My wife and I were going to a close friend's daughter's wedding, and they had listed this hotel as one of 2 available for wedding guests. The booking process was very difficult because the hotel had written down a misspelling of the Groom's last name. Further, the rate quoted to the bride and groom was much less than what was quoted to me when I called. Other friends also staying at the hotel but not mentioning the wedding party received even lower rates. By talking to the manager, I was able to get the quoted wedding party rate. On the day of arrival and after a 5+ hour drive, we were told that our room was not ready - we had arrived an hour before "check-in". We were told that it would be a 20 to 30 minute wait. An hour later, housekeeping still had not cleaned our room eventhough we appeared to be the only one waiting during that entire hour. We had to dressed for the wedding ASAP but he check-in clerk apparently had no pull with housekeeping, so we were given another room with a king bed instead of 2 queens. The room was smaller than we were used to, but it was clean and everything appeared in order. We were located next to the lounge/breakfast room, and the walls were not very sound proof and we were disturbed both be late-goers in the lounge and quests in the room above us. On the plus side, the hotel was in a great location, at a reasonable price, and the bed provided a good sleep, although a little to soft for me. The personnel was friendly and accommodating, not with standing the booking process and the checkout process, which was delayed, because the computer initially was unable to print with $ figures on the page.

    « Remodeling in progress...but still a great hotel! »

Yes, remodeling is happening here, but it is still a great hotel, and I would stay here again! We had one of the smaller rooms, but it provided everything we needed, plus a microwave and fridge. Bed was very comfortable, the staff were all excellent and very attentive. The breakfast buffet was above average and was delicious. Many rooms were under construction, but we had no issues with our room which had already been updated. They offer many sized rooms, plus suites, which we were able to see into from the hallway while being cleaned, and they were enormous rooms! Yes, there are updates happening, but the hotel was great and I would stay again.

« Not the Best By Far »

Even booking the room was a hassle it took calling multiple times to get the reservation made. Then at check in our room's doors were propped open and we were told the room was clean and just to close the doors. It must not have been communicated to housekeeping because a housekeeper walked into our room while my sister was changing in the front room. We heard no follow up from the the front desk. Overall, employees were not helpful and seemed disinterested. Night Audit was helpful and seemed nice though.

« Very clean room and friendly staff »

The hotel is pretty dated but they are renovating, so that should help. The staff is very friendly and the rooms were clean. The breakfast was very good and had a lot of variety. I would stay at this location again.

« This is nothing more than a cheap motel »

The staff was not friendly, the hotel looked okay from the outside, but as soon as you step inside there is an odor, it looks extremely dingy, and looked and felt very dirty. It is nothing more than an extremely overpriced Motel.

    « Looking for a clean room »

It was awe full !! I made reservations in Early August for a King suite. I was told it had a fire place and separate bedroom. My daughter and I were visiting my granddaughter at college . I wanted to get her out of her dorm for the night . What we got was a dirty little room with a couch that had a bed spring with a sheet on it to sleep on. Beware!!!

« Dont stay unless you cant get in anywhere else »

Dated, dusty, and terrible bedding. Would not stay here again. Aged property, good location, but it needs a total makeover. Rooms, corridors etc, very dated and in need of a good clean. I had terrible Asthma from the dust and definitely wouldn't stay here again.

    « Displeased »

Overall I am very dissatisfied with the cost of stay given the alternative options and treatment from the management staff. I was told that I could not be offered the corporate rate for my stay due to the local activities that weekend, but moments later I was offered a discount for signing up for the Best Western rewards program. This was a comparable discount, but it was an unprompted offer.

« Great Place to stay »

This was the easiest check in's that i have ever had. Nice clean and comfortable rooms. Great pricing. Rooms are easy to get to. They have a very good continental breakfast. I will stay there every time i am in the area.

« Very Old, Run Down and False Advertising! »

We were looking for a place to go for our 1 year anniversary. We came across this hotel that advertised theme rooms. One room "The Lords Tower" advertised a hot tub in the room plus an additional private hot tub on the roof. This sounded interesting so we called to reserve. The representative not only affirmed the room but also said, "It's nice to sit in the hot tub and look at the stars at night." We get to the hotel and it looks quite run down so I tell my husband that we will look at the room before we check in. The carpets in the hotel were very old and smelly, there is no elevator and the steps are rickety. We walk into the room and there is a dehumidifier running to get the mildew smell out. The room is very dated and then we are told that the hot tub hasn't been running in a long time and that "you can sit in the hot tub but there's no water." WHAT???!! There were old cigarette butts laying around which was supposed to be a smoke free room. Needless to say, we didn't stay there and still said no when asked if we wanted a different room! This may have been a decent hotel 40 years ago but please spare yourself and go somewhere else...don't let the lower price influence you...which actually isn't that low as they still wanted $120 for the room.

    « very, very average »

Older hotel, older decor, older room design, not very inviting rooms as it can definitely use a remodeling/rehab. Relatively clean, good for a night stay for business travelers but not for leisure or vacation purpose. Staff are nice and helpful. close proximity of Univ. of Iowa.

« Improvements are in the works »

I picked this hotel solely on location and they are in the midst of renovating the pool area and several rooms. The exterior has been updated since my previous stay, which is nice and the rooms are VERY large - plenty of room to move around. They gave 5 pillows per bed, which was very nice. The fixtures and décor are a slight bit outdated, but overall we had a nice time and it was sufficient for our stay. The breakfast buffet was VERY good and the service was great as well. I'd stay here again. Hopefully poolside next time, once they reopen that section of the hotel. There is also a Mexican restaurant next door which serves fabulous food and drinks.

« 4 am, had to sleep for a few hours... »

Been traveling since 8 pm, trying to make it in time for a funeral the next morning, 4 am, we can travel no further without sleep. We're in Iowa City the night before a Hawkeyes game, so every hotel is booked up. We stop a couple places that are full, and then we stop at the Best Western Canterbury Suites. The night manager said he only had one room left, and it was a smoking room. We're so tired that it doesn't matter, and her is kind enough to discount it steeply because of the late hour. When we get in the hallway, the smoke smell was extremely strong, and also when we got in the room. However, the room was extremely clean, the white comforter and sink both were gleaming, and I didn't see a speck of dust anywhere. Opening the window for fifteen minutes removed a lot of the tobacco smell, and the beds were firm, but comfortable. The shower was hot, and the showerhead was adjustable to your comfort. Breakfast the next day had several options including waffles, and the staff was doing a great job keeping up with all the hungry football fans. I found the medieval theme of the rooms charming, and thought the rooms overlooking the pool area were a cute touch. They were obviously remodeling, but it didn't affect our stay in any way. Very grateful they were able to accommodate our late check-in!

    « a mess »

Let me start with some positives. The woman at the front desk was very nice and accommodating. I really appreciate nice people and she was great. We needed a place to stay while visiting family and due to the Hawkeye game, hotels were outrageously priced so we picked this one. The lobby was fine upon entering but once you entered the halls, that's when it got bad. The carpet was dark, old and smelly. A lot of the room doors had masking tape on them. No matter what that for, it gave me the impression of broken down. The pool area was ok but some of the pool adjacent rooms were open and I could see they were used as storage areas with a pile of old mattresses stacked up. Just seemed like a dirty mess in there. Our room was a lofted room with dirty brown carpet and rickety stairs. One of the tv remotes didn't work at all so that was fun. I do have to say the same the room was clean and the counters seemed updated. This hotel is in desperate need of new carpet and a new coat of paint.

    « returning from Sturgis »

I had reservations at this hotel booked a month in advance for August 13, 2016. I booked 3 rooms 1st floor, on our return trip from Sturgis. We arrived on time and was told our rooms were canceled and they attempted to contact me, however my phone never showed a phone call or missed call. We started to argue and the check in clerk was quite rude. We left and booked rooms down the street. I would not recommend this place for anyone.

    « Awesome Room »

The room was done up in medieval times, was very clean and comfortable. They are remodeling and updating parts of the hotel, around the pool area, however it is not interfering with the comfort of the other guest. Staff was very nice and pleasant to deal with.

    « Still a great value.... »

We have stayed at this hotel many times over the years. Nice to see it is being updated, but still retains some of its old charm. Friendly helpful staff. We had a king suite which is our usual choice, as it is very spacious with everything we needed for the weekend. Love the location as it is close to many good restaurants, the stadium and hospital, with easy access from the interstate, Breakfast was much improved since our last stay - not elaborate but a nice selection of both hot and cold items and fresh fruit. Great coffee, too. Will definitely be back.

    « What a disappointment »

I recently booked rooms at the Best Western Canterbury for my granddaughters, daughter, myself, and friends. We were so impressed by the pictures of the Royal Knights Suite and another suite that both boasted of private balconies and hot tub on one of them. BUYERS BEWARE!! They seriously need to update their photos and the selling points. One balcony was dead bolted shut. The other balcony, with the "hot tub" had an old hot tub out there with 6 inches of sludge in the bottom of it from God only knows when. When I went to the front desk to simply state it was NOT EVEN CLOSE TO WHAT WAS PICTURED, not to mention the fact that it had a musty odor and the rooms were dusty, the little girl at the front desk was actually arguing with me! Thank goodness her manager saw what was happening and immediately told her to refund my credit card.

« best western cantebury inn & suites »

Very dark, dirty looking loft hot tub suite!!! hot tub/shower was very dirty. tried to move to regular room, was told it would be same price even though the rate was less when we booked. Pool was empty! overall bad! don't waste time and money. Stay some where else.

    « Avg hotel/Good value/Close to Univ of Iowa »

Average Best Western although needs some updating. Reasonably priced, incl usual breakfast offerings. Right off I-80. Mall across the street. Plenty of restaurants nearby. Ten minute drive to University of Iowa campus. Have stayed there before and will stay there in the future.

    « A cozy place to be! »

The Cantebury Inn is a wonderful hotel. I frequent Coralville often and EVERY time I'm here, I stay at Cantebury Inn. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are mighty comfy. Since I stay often, I know there are constant upgrades going in to the rooms. For a pleasant stay book your next night at this Best Western!

« Great place to stay!!! »

This place is a GREAT place to stay ... I have been there two times now for more that 2 days and would come back again and again and again!!!! It has been a more than pleasant experience each time I have been here. I would recommend this motel to any and all of my friends. The Staff is GREAT and the rooms are so UNIQUE ... it becomes an experience in of it's own. I hope they do not raise their prices so I would not be able to afford to stay there ... right now it is PERFECT!!!

    « Great Anniversary Stay! »

We rented a suite for our anniversary and the price was perfect compared to other hotel suites in the area. The hotel has a medieval theme to it and I know the Cantebury Inns date back to at least the 70s. I was glad to see this particular Cantebury Inn has been well maintained and kept up while still keeping with the medieval theme because others we've been to have gotten very run down. Our room was very clean and nice, the bed very comfortable and everything in great working order. We didn't get to use the hot tub because we went straight to bed after dinner however it was very clean and looked well maintained. My only major complaint would be that the pool area was extremely hot & humid compared to every hotel I have ever been to. It was unbearable so we didn't swim. The continental breakfast had a larger than average selection and a great option for those partaking however we chose to go out for breakfast. We are likely going to stay again in a couple months for my son's birthday.

« Great place to stay »

We had a great room at this property. It was big and it was very clean and comfortable. We always stay at Best Westerns when ever we can and have never been disappointed. We always seem to receive a great place to stay for the money. I've noticed over the years a lot of people like to nit-pick over every little thing, but when it comes down to it if the room is nice and clean and the value is good then everything else is OK.

« Totally Gone to Seed »

This once charming mock Tudor-themed hotel is now dirty with no character left. The lobby, the hallway, and our room were dirty and smelled of stale cigarette smoke. Long gone are the rose gardens, sauna, hot tubs, and pool. After several pleasurable stays from 1994 - 2009, my 2016 experience left me with a most negative opinion of the Best Western brand.

« Smeely room and More »

The toilet leaked, the room smell was musty, AC did not work well it was on 60 and room was still hot. Will say the beds were comfort and had ref and microwave in it but that was it. Wished we would of not stayed there for the price we paid. I am glad we didn't want to go swimming the pool had no water in it.

    « Doesn't match the picture! »

Convenient to the highway and i was driving through. Fast check-in, pleasant woman at the desk. Older hotel, in pretty good shape, but my room smelled of stale smoke. Pool was closed for renovation but it didn't look like any work was being done.

    « Unimpressive Hotel Experience »

A/C was not working properly and hotel's "solution" did nothing to solve the problem. Extremely hot stay. Bath towels were stained and dingy looking. Pool was under construction, we were not notified ahead of our stay. Room was very dark despite having three lamps in the room. Breakfast was less than impressive and not particularly well maintained, had to wait for restocking of things with an hour left of breakfast time. Polite personnel and good water pressure in shower, despite the tiny bathroom.

    « Wonerful Staff!! »

I have lived in this area all of my life and I have known this hotel and property. Although it is true that the hotel is under revnovation, the staff is wonderful and very hospitable. It seems today that people want a a deal, a discount, a kickback, a comp. When I consider the hotel and property were very neglected over the past 10 years, the new owners and friendly staff have gone above and beyond for their clients despite several of thetrials and tribulations they have come across. Thank you to Hardik and the entire crew for bringing this hitel back to life!! Great rates and good clean fun.

    « Very disappointing experience! »

Compared with our previous 3 stays at Best Western hotels, this stay in Coralville was very disappointing. This seemed to be a very old hotel which definite needs some serious renovating. Our room was very small and the bathroom was so tiny, we were literally bumping the wall and the sink/vanity area were not even connected to each other.

« Average place to stay »

Ok, it is definitely not a fancy new hotel. As long as you aren't expecting that then you will be ok. We stayed here one night and found the room to be clean and up to date as it could be. Clerk was helpful until we asked for a wine opener and were told that they have all been stolen? Guess they are too expensive for the hotel to afford to get more with the expectation that they will be lost. Anyway, overall the stay was fine. If you just need a room for the night this place will work. If you are looking to be pampered and stay for a weekend get away I would consider somewhere else.

« Okay for the money »

I have stayed at this hotel a number of times over the years, but the price is going up and the quality is going down. The sheets are thin, worn and had some light stains. The room was recently renovated (I think), but not well-done - the toilet sits crooked and is hard to sit one, for instance. The room, on entering, was very stuffy and smelled strongly of mildew - like it had had wet carpet that was allowed to sit for a long time. Didn't see mildew, but the smell never went away during out stay, even after running the AC all night.

    « Super helpful staff »

I was looking forward to visiting my family in Coralville, and as a loyal Best Western traveler, this hotel fit my needs perfectly. I saw that they were updating (remodeling) their hotel and/or rooms, which indicates a desire to give us a more pleasant stay. We stayed at another BW last week which was also remodeling, and there were no major problems for us, so I figured we'd have just as good a stay. Unfortunately, I had to change my plans to visit this week, and with all the stress of moving, forgot to cancel my reservation by the deadline. I called the hotel, and asked if they could help, and Hardik was very understanding and nice enough to cancel it for me right away. We really appreciate great service such as this, and will stay here when the opportunity presents itself. Thank you.

« Do not stay here »

Do not stay here. They will cancel your reservation two weeks before a big event because they decided to renovate. They will not help you find other accommodations and they will act like they do not care and that it is not their fault. DO NOT STAY HERE.

    « Go somplace else. »

This place was picked by our coach tour, they must have received a really great rate, because, when we got there, we rolled our suitcases through water in the hallway. (there was no sign of anyone trying to clean this water up) There were 35 of us in our group, those people who were near the pool, there was so much noise, the front desk had to be called to close the pool at ll:00 p.m. Our tour guide had bugs in her room, some people complained about cob webs. The tour company reimbursed us later in our trip with a dinner and apology. Management needs to take better care of their rooms.

    « Questionable neighborhood. »

Not an area I would recommend to anyone. This establishment is not in a favorable neighborhood. For this location I would expect to pay less for the room. I would suggest somewhere more favorable for families.

« When they refuse to fix a screw up »

I spent two nights there and I come to find out that they charged me for three extra rooms that I never asked for and refuse to fix there wrong I am tired of fighting with the hotel so I am trying to decide whether it's worth my time to go after them legal wise or to let them just keep my money FYI don't ever stay here it's not worth the money or effort it's totally a messed up hotel and staff

    « Disappointed »

Been staying at this location for 30 years and have many fond memories . Check in was bad, in the middle of taking care of me she picked up her phone & made a personal call. The restaurant is permanently closed as well as the bar. In our loft suite the living room didn't have a couch, only one padded chair & a chair at the desk.air conditioner in the bed room wouldn't work, we called the front desk but nobody showed up.. We went to the front desk and waited but nobody was there! We then packed up ,dropped our keys off & left..

    « Fourth weekend »

Great hotel, front desk was great friendly and accommodating. Rooms where clean and spacious, bed was really comfy. Great location to really go anywhere in Iowa City, Coralville, and North Liberty. Close to Perkins for late night meal, and breakfast was great. Didnt use pool but looked very nice, clean. The people using it seemed to be enjoying it and there was someone in it everytime i walked by.

    « Room Smelled »

When we first walked into the room it had a smell of stale body odor. The bed had a cigarette burn on the comforter and it was supposed to be a non- smoking room. This however wasn't half as bad as finding someone else's hair still on one of the pillows. When you walked into the bathroom there were rust stains on the ceiling and the bathroom fan sounded like an airplane was taking off. The room was very worn down which I could've overlooked had not smelled. Will not be returning to this hotel.

    « OLD ! »

We've stayed here many times over the years. Its going down hill fast. The new management only see "$". My wife almost stepped off into a large hole in the front of the building while looking at the construction. (LARGE, DEEP hole, not a "pothole".) No barricade. OSHA would fine the hect out of the contractor should they see it. I should know, I'm a contractor.

    « Very comfy feel »

Old World charm. Clean and comfortable. Great breakfast with a nice variety (waffles, eggs, biscuits/gravy, cereal, yogurt, oatmeal, etc.). Had hot tub room with fireplace, had built in bookcase with books all around giving it an old mansion feel to it.

    « Nice Property,Excellent Location »

We stayed at the Best Western,Coralville IA , and were surprised that inspite of the bad reviews, the staff and the property were doing a great job. Location wise, EXCELLENT, Price : We got much more value for the price we paid for, Property is being remodeled, there was a roofing crew working quitely and seems they are getting a Brand New Roof. We also saw people installe new furniture, signs and painting the hallways. Breakfast room ,Huge and spacious, didnt see any roaches or mouses,Seems Ecolab has been in charge of the property ,saw items with their signs around the property. Indoor Pool : Nice and Big, we had a room by the pool side and could relax and enjoy. WIFI worked perfectly during our stay. So I guess, we will stay here again

« I like this motel just the way it is »

This Best Western Cantebury Inn is quite unique - it has an "Old English Tudor" design, which is quite refreshing after so many nights at the bland, boring motels we usually see. Sadly, I was told they are remodeling the building and may do away with the Tudor design - I urged them to keep it! The staff is friendly, nice-sized indoor pool, great convenient location, too.

    « Awful! »

This place was horrid! The filth was unacceptable. It is old and run down but the pet hair on the carpet and stuff splattered on the wall was awful! The ice machine didn't work. The outside door was propped open. It was just downright nasty.

« pay more and stay somewhere else. »

I come to Iowa City often for business and personal. Since I do not spend much time in the Hotel, I stay here because of the price. It is cheap but you should never have to put up with roaches in the room and mice running down the hall. The breakfast room has mouse traps and mouse crap on the floor. You get what you pay for I guess.

« FILTHY! - but breakfast was good »

Arrived and had trouble checking in because we thought we booked a non-smoking room and we were told it was smoking. He argued with me, but easily offered to switch it because they had one available. He then asked that in return I give them a good review online. Oops! The room smelled like cat pee. The floor had not been vacuumed. But after the previous hassle at the front desk made me not want to ask for something different. The exercise room was also filthy and of the (only) 7 machines - 3 were broken. No free weights. This hotel is starred way too high for as dirty and broken down as it was. Breakfast was good though. It runs out quick so don't be afraid to call and ask them to refill. They refilled a bunch of times - no problem. Hot food was great. Scrambled eggs, omelets, sausage, biscuits and gravy, waffle machine and also healthier options - fruit. Still, I hope to never stay there again!

« Terrible hotel in Iowa City »

Terrible stay, dirty room, limited flexibility. The place was soo old, gloomy, they designed the fridge to be located in the rest room. Also, the room listed on Best western Website is totally different that the room that we were given. In summary, we won't book Best Western ever again.

« A new Inn to put on our list »

This was a great hotel for very tired travelers. The desk clerk was very efficient, friendly and helpful Our TV problem was attended to immediately and resolved. We were impressed with the selection of restaurants within walking distance. Upscale to fast food, with 3 or more of each. The Walgreens nearby was a bonus for us at this time.

    « good value »

this is an older property but very well maintained, clean and responsive to their guests. If I where to come though again I will stay here, the discount at the mexican place next door for guests didn't hurt, food was great

« A suite for less than a normal room charge. »

We were checked in by Johnnie at the front desk who told us we could get a room more suited to us and changed our reservation with a smile. She knew where things were and directed us to those places we wanted to visit spot on. Further--we had taken the wrong entrance door to our room, and Jimmie (Maint) saw us struggling in the hall-took my wifes heavy bag and walked us right to our room door - when I went to tip him he said naw we just do that. The suite we stayed in would normally cost you about three times what we paid.

« Dusty and minor inconveniences »

The hotel was in need of a deep clean. The phone was broken in our room and the front desk said that they would put in a work order. The ice machine on the ground floor near the pool area was broken obviously an inconvenience but a detramental problem if your handicap and unable to use the stairs. The only other operational ice maker we could find was upstairs. We used the pool which was a very happening place on a Saturday night. No pool towels available. I called the front desk to request some be brought over, the front staff said ok but no towels were brought to the pool area.

    « Faded Glory »

At one time this might have been a fun place to stay. Not anymore! We were there 4 years ago when our daughter started at the University of Iowa. It was getting a little shabby then, MUCH worse now. It if had not been graduation weekend. (No other rooms available anywhere) we would have left immediately. The toilet wasn't working. You had to flush three times to clear the bowl, The phone was working either. Apparently the room hadn't been cleared in a long time Bathroom was a mess, (hairs all over the shower) Complained NUMEROUS times and nothing ever got done. Free breakfast was a joke. They ran out of almost everything after the first half hour.

    « Terrible Management »

Booked this hotel due to being in Iowa City to take my special needs daughter to the U of I hospital. Tried to check in at 1:30 (an hour and a half before their scheduled check in time) so we could feed our daughter before her appointment. The gentleman looked up my reservation like he was going to let me check in and the woman manager comes out and says our check in policy isn't until 3. (I have NEVER had a problem checking in early before and we travel A LOT). I asked her, "you have no clean rooms available?" and she said "no they're all still dirty" -- well that's a lot of rooms to clean in a hour and a half! My husband then called and spoke with the gentleman and pretended he was a customer checking to see if any rooms very available that he could check into right away and the man said yes. Then he said well my wife just tried to check in and was told she couldn't. And the rude woman manager gets on the phone and says no we don't have any rooms we're booked. (nothing but lies from these people!) Spent multiple phone calls with the customer care for Best Western and they claim they are the "mediator" between the customer and the hotel that they could not refund my stay since the cancellation policy was the night before.... well how do you know the night before that management is going to treat you like that the day you check in??? We also spoke directly with the hotel manager who said she couldn't refund our stay that corporate had to do it. So basically all we got was a lot of stress and headache when we already had plenty of that to deal with before our appointment at the U of I hospital. I will NEVER stay at a Best Western again, how can management treat their customers like that?? I mean how much trouble would it have been to let us check in a whole hour and a half earlier? Like come on, your rooms are not all dirty, what a liar! She also had the nerve to hang up on us during one of the times we called. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone, I honestly don't know how it is once you get past check in but the management is terrible, so I'm guessing it can't be too much better inside!

When we reserved the room, the images online did not by any means match what we walked into. The images online showed beautiful accommodations and furniture in the sitting area of the room. What we walked into, was a nasty smelling room, had 1 chair for sitting, remotes didn't work half of the time, the microwave burnt the bag of my microwave popcorn putting a hole in the bag and burning the rest of my popcorn, the fridge barely kept anything cold, the whirlpool in the room didn't work right, the bed was extremely lump, people were yelling and screaming in the pool area at all times of the night, so we got little to no sleep, then when it rained outside... yeah it rained in our room where the sliding door to the balcony was and the electronics were plugged in at, it could have caused a fire or electrocuted us, it also rained from the sky light above the pool into the pool making the pool unusable, but the staff still allowed people to swim in it without treating it, when the staff FINALLY decided to move us to another room it was way smaller than the one we originally paid for for 2 days, no one bothered to even refund us even a little bit of our money for everything we had gone through as it was and the fact that the room we were placed in was way cheaper than what we paid for, in the new room we could still hear loud and clear people screaming and yelling around the pool area, in fact it seemed even louder than from the other room due to the room placement, we ended up leaving the room repeatedly and going to the lobby to sit for a while just to get some quiet, the employees didn't seem to like that just by the way they looked at us with pure disdain, and to top everything off the internet barely worked half the time, and they no longer had the amazing restaurant on premises that they use to have. It was not at all fun for my husband and I like it was before. We stayed once a long time ago for our son's medical appointment. The accomodations at that time were top notch back then. That was why we chose to stay here again. Now, though, now I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy. GO SOMEPLACE ELSE!

« Picked up a serious case of bed bugs »

After spending two nights at this hotel in summer of 2015, we carried an infestation of bed bugs to our good friends' home in Wisconsin where we were headed. We spent the next 10 days fighting rashes, paying doctor and pharmacy bills, fumigating their home ($1,200) and washing and rewashing clothes, linens, curtains, etc. When we called the hotel manager, we didn't even get one "I'm sorry" this happened to you. The management simply said that they would have their housekeeping staff "check it out". Our actual stay was good. The pool area was very nice and I enjoyed several swims. The beds were comfortable for sleeping and the breakfast had lots of variety. However, we will never stay there again.

« Ok stay for one night »

This place is way below the standards of all the Best Western hotels I have been. The only positive thing is the strategic location, between downtown Iowa City and Coralville. I paid $100 for a luxury room with balcony. Sadly the balcony was shared, so to have privacy I had to keep the curtains shut and the room dark. The toilet and the sink were separate. The adjoining door had no sound barrier and we could hear every conversation from the other room. The room was clean but the hotel the building in general was filthy. Service nothing worth remembering.

    « coralville, iowa »

staff was nice , room was large, but the bathroom was too small, the toilet was against the wall, and the sink was on the other side of a wall . television was not working when we got there, but they did fix that, ac was not cooling at all , nothing was done about that . doubtful we will stay there again .

    « Front desk personnel »

Too bad the lady at the front desk is leaving soon-- she is incredibly kind, thoughtful and thorough. She greeted me with a smile and made sure I got an appropriate room for me and my senior dog. The room was clean and everything worked. If I return to this area, I would stay here again.

    « Good Value Hotel »

Clean room, friendly staff better than average breakfast. Located within 10-15 minutes of University of Iowa. Didn't us pool or fitness center. Plenty of restaurants within walking area plus large mall. Good value for money paid.

« I used to stay at the Fairfield »

The first couple visits to Iowa City I stayed at the Fairfield Inn, which is a lovely hotel. On one trip out to IC I discovered this hotel via a free travel guide at a truck stop. I have since stayed here several times and have always enjoyed my stay, getting what I got at the more expensive hotel for 30-40 bucks per night less. What I love about the Cantebury is that rooms can be so different. Although the franchise is forcing this location to move away from the Cantebury theme it still has quite a bit of charm. My daughter and I stayed on the firs floor in a double room that was so huge it was insane. I have stayed in the smoking section in the hotel (yes, it smells like smoke but is opposite of the other rooms I have not smelled carry over) in a room where the bed was in an upper level surrounded by books. It was awesome even with the cigarette smell. They have one in non smoking too!! This hotel is older and there are minor detractions that come with age, the room I stayed in this past time the toilet paper holder was not securely affixed to the wall, for me, not a big deal. When I had to stayed at a more upscale chain in the suite @ 200 a night graduation weekend it was very disappointing that the carpet had fraying holes in it. What I have noticed over the years in which I have stayed at this hotel is that they are constantly maintaining and upgrading. They have a very nice breakfast room with what has become the expectation of travelers regarding the offerings; they offer the works. The rooms have always been clean and well kept. What I love is there are plenty of pillows - 4 per bed. Each room has all the amenities; free WiFi, microwave, frig, complimentary shampoo, conditioner and soap, hair dryer and iron with ironing board. There is a wonderful Mexican restaurant within the same parking area as the hotel. There is also an indoor pool, which I have not taken advantage of, but on my last stay could hear guests enjoying themselves as our room had a balcony overlooking the pool area. Laughter is always a good sign. I have stayed mid week at 77$ per night double occupancy (includes 7+ bucks in local taxes) and a bit more for weekends. The price goes up significantly on Iowa home game weekends and graduations. Again, this hotel is not perfect, but rivals the other hotels in IC that I have stayed at. For my daughter and myself it is a bit of a tradition to stay here as we have always enjoyed ourselves.

    « Wrestling Olympic Trials »

The room was nice. Bathroom is small but okay. The help at Receptions was friendly but seemed untrained or not know how to use system. Took long time to register and when checking out long line with each person spending alot of time at counter. Did not move fast. Breakfast was good. Cook and waitress/ waiters very friendly nad keeping things clean.

« Worst facility in the USA »

Floor broken and covered by carpet that was wet. Housekeeping did not make but only one of the two beds. Pool broken. No food in morning as machines were broken and help didn't know how to do anything. Bed was so bad we could hardly move the next days. Just awful. Never stayed at a Best Western that we didn't love, except this one! What a total disaster!!!

« Great hotel... at first. »

I checked in to stay as I was too exhausted to drive home. The man at the front desk was incredibly nice and the room was amazing. Downstairs was large with a kitchenette, microwave, mini fridge, coffee maker, a bathroom with a shower, and a balcony that led overlooked the pool. Upstairs had a very large bed with a great TV and to the right of the bed was an awesome mirrored area with the heart shaped spa tub. Everything was very clean and the bed was comfortable. Wonderful. When I went to take a bath, however, the jets only shot ice cold water. I spoke with the man at the front desk and he advised to try letting the water run for a while. So I tried that, still didn't work. At that point he offered to switch my room which I gladly accepted because the whole reason I picked that room was for the spa tub. This is when things quickly went downhill. The new room was much smaller. There was no kitchenette, just a desk with the previously mentioned items on it and the mini fridge under it. The spa tub was downstairs near the door and had a very large mildew stain above it, no mirrored room like before. The bed was much smaller and the sheets and pillows were very stained. There was also some blackish brown substance smeared along the bottom of whatever was hanging over the bed. I tried the tub again, still no hot jets. I asked the man at the desk to get me new pillows which he gladly did and let him know for maintenance that the tub was not working in that room either. Maybe a problem with the system? Either way, at checkout, I was obviously hoping for some sort of discount since my room was downgraded and the tub I paid for did not work... Nope, a different person was there and did not give any kind of discount. I loved my first room so I would stay again, however, not unless I get a look at the room first as the quality between the two was completely different.

    « Excellent Location,Well Worth the Money »

Best Western,Coralville has a huge indoor pool area, excellent location & walking to fast foods and restaurants.Kids loved the Breakfast, as it had a choice of hot breakfast, fresh waffles,,different types of meats, breads,Wifi worked fine. The Staff was nice and friendly. Ample parking and the Casa Azul Restaurant across from the Lobby is also a nice value addition to the property.

« Dark and Dirty is How I Would Sum Up My Visit »

This Best Western is dark, dirty ... and a bit scary for a single woman traveling alone. The breakfast was okay. The Mexican Restaurant next door was very good and had a big crowd. I used to love Best Western ... Stayed with them all around the world, but they used to be independent motels that joined with the brand for advertising ... Now they are no longer unique, but like everyone else ... Only in this case bad ... I could not in good conscience recommend staying at this hotel.

    « Old and loud »

My 17YO son and I traveled to Iowa City for the Big 10 Wrestling Championship. I'm normally not a Best Western fan, but I booked this hotel because it got decent reviews and it was fairly close to the arena. The room was clean enough, if a little cramped, and the bathroom had clearly been reconfigured to accommodate putting the sink outside. The beds were comfortable and we had what we needed, though. The real problem was the noise. As an older hotel, there was no sound deadening, and we could hear EVERYTHING from the hallway and above us. The worst, though, was the indoor pool. The water makes things echo, so anytime the pool was open (7am-11pm), it felt as if we were right in the thick of things (most rooms are poolside). Shortly before 5am, several adult men jumped in the pool and started playing around, which woke me up. I tried to wait it out but ended up calling the front desk, who took care of it right away. (Kudos for that.) I ended up buying earplugs at CVS for night #2 and slept much better after that. The food on the breakfast bar was fine (waffles, eggs, biscuits and gravy, bread, cereal), but there was never enough of it. Yogurt and fruit were gone both mornings, and silverware was constantly running out. The staff seemed slow to take care of restocking anything. Coffee was hot and plentiful. The fitness center was tucked wayyyyy back into a corner of the basement, but the equipment (two treadmills, two ellipticals, a stationary bike, and a weight machine) was good quality, clean, and in good working order. No complaints there. As a fairly light sleeper, I would not stay at this hotel again, but I don't plan to stay at any hotel with an atrium pool specifically for the noise reason. Without the noise issue, I would give it an average rating for this level of hotel. The paper thin walls and the loud pool area were more than I was willing to handle, though.

    « Don't accept a smoking room... »

Asked for poolside room, non smoking... they gave me and my kids, two of whom have asthma, a smoking room. We were also charged $20 more than the previous stay for a much worse room. The room was clean but smelled terrible. The entire hallway smelled bad but the room was much worse. We will not be back. My advice? Even if you are a smoker, ask for nonsmoking and just do it outside. Yes... it is really that bad.

    « Weekend getaway »

We booked for 2 nights in a room with a Jacuzzi tub. When we arrived we had to wait, along with another couple, about 20 minutes before anyone came to the front desk. The worker was the only person working in the hotel at that time, Friday at 7:30pm. We got to our room which was dated but comfortable with the exception of the couch. It was very stained ,We covered the couch with towels when we did use it. The cushions were so worn that they sank down onto the hide a bed. Very uncomfortable. The first morning we left to go do our fun plans and when we came back our cards would not let us in the building. To our surprise they had checked us out after1 night. Everything turned out ok but each little thing turned into a big thing...

Overall it was a great place for family get together. Check in was very easy and kind. the personel were very helpful and friendly . The rooms well arranged and convenient to everyone. very enjoyable stay Love Iowa City. I love all the shops, art, and resturants. I attended a wonderful art show and had lots of fun tagging along with my son and his friends. Cedar Rapids for Comic Con.

« NO HOT TUB! Good price... »

After a 5hr drive we were looking forward to sitting in a hot tub in the pool area only to find out they have removed the public hot tub and only have private whirlpools in some of their suites... Needless to say we were only one of many disappointed customers looking for it since the hotel description does state they have 2 along with the pool and sauna... Made it seem they were part of the pool area not in a room... So Best Western you might want to clarify that! Room was ok but toilet was not working well... Strange drainage problems... Breakfast was included and ok... Overall hotel was ok for the $60 we paid but you definitely get what you pay for and I would probably not return!

    « Lied to, Unsafe »

Had broken hot tub on arrival. Desk clerk did not have name badge and promised us one discount, then gave us a different one. They had a Space heater in the coat closet which was run into the ceiling so which was obviously them not a past guest. that was a major fire hazard. we were moved to another room which had outlets which did not work providing unsafe lighting throughout the room. I had to use a power strip and cord of my own to have power in the room where it was needed. Was never given the correct discount even after calling back on 01//18/16 . I was denied the right to speak to the Manager of the hotel. I will never go back and will tell others to avoid staying there as it is not safe or reliable business

    « Just Okay »

I went without high expectations based on reviews and for the most part they are correct. We stayed in a loft jacuzzi suit which was nice however, our a/c did not work well at all and being in a loft it was extremely uncomfortable. The man at the the front desk was very helpful and fixed it as best as he could and I appreciate that. We overlooked the pool area and I will say if you are looking for peace and quiet then stay as far away from the pool as possible, very noisy. The pool was freezing and there where no towels available. The bathroom was VERY small and you had to lift the door and then push it in order for it to close all the way, there was also a wet spot on our carpet in the living area which was gross. We moved the furniture around a little to make a little more room and it was obvious housecleaning never cleans under there. Again I will say, for the price its decent enough for a quick get away bit dont expect a 4 or even 5 star stay.

    « Very nice stay »

The rooms were very clean. The bed was really comfortable. Breakfast could have had more options but it wasn't too bad. I would recommend it to others. It was in a good location, near restaurants and very close to entertainment. Overall a very good hotel and I would stay here again.

    « surprise »

Clean, comfortable and handy. The complementary breakfast was especially pleasing. The Bed and bedding are B++ quality. The internet is fast and efficient. The business center is handy. The bath and shower is full pressure and semi luxurious. The sink is near the front entrance, but acceptable. Overall, The Cantabury Inn is the best value in Iowa City.

« Our Family Christmas Party »

We stayed at the Best Western Cantebury in Coralville, IA. It has become a family tradition to stay at this hotel because the rooms are spacious, updated and the pool was recently renovated. It is very nice with lots of tables and chairs surrounding it so adults can chat and keep an eye on the kids as they swim.

« Great place to stay »

The place was excellent to stay ,good staff ,good service, just loved every bit of it ,would come back again to stay ,the location was excellent too ,comfortable bed, great comfort, great place , breakfast was excellent

    « Mensa major overhaul »

From the road it looks decent and the same from the front desk. But when you get to the room, it was almost enough to want to run. Room was dark, patio door to indoor pool area did not locked securely and the peephole in the door was too large and appeared to be just cut out. Close to interstate but needs MAJOR work done

    « Very caring »

The pool was OK it was a little chill but you can get use to it. Owners and employees treated us like we belong there. Very caring. If you have a loved in U of I hospital this is amazingly close by. Around alot of eaterys and close to i80. Free breakfast was ok.

    « Good Value for Money,Excellent Location »

We visited Iowa City and stayed at this property.Nice new Exterior Appearance, Brighly Lit Parking lot at night. A mexican restaurant in the parking lot across from the lobby. The property offers Hot breakfast in the morning, staff was nice and friendly.Pool Area was huge, and we liked that our room was poolside. Will stay there whenever we go again.

This place could be amazing, if anyone CARED about it. The staff is great, they TRY. Unfortunately when you have an owner who doesn't care, and management who would rather put complaints on their staff and hide in the office, you're not going to have a great hotel. I might recommend this one to Hotel Impossible, You will not feel "clean" There will be things that don't work. I got out of our van and stepped in HORSE SH*T. This was the FIRST thing that happened, and we laughed it off. I told front desk, and it was STILL THERE on the third day when we were checking out. By that point we had switched rooms once, and complained at check out about how awful this place is. So if you tell employees at a hotel you stepped in HORSE SH*T in their parking lot, and no one bothers to clean up a big ole pile of it, obviously you can figure out that no one cares about this place. Good luck here, I wouldn't stay. You can get a much better bang for your buck somewhere else. They also charge WAY more money than they should. I was fooled by thinking that the price meant it would be nicer. No such luck.

    « Excellent Experience »

Went to visit Iowa University for Second Time. WE previously stayed at another hotel & didn't care for it. This hotel the staff was friendly, and loved the pool access room. Wish breakfast was a little better, but not the worst. Will stay here again!!!

    « a bit disappointing »

I believe we had what was called the "knights suite". its at the top of its own steep staircase which was interesting. It was above everything else, so there was privacy at least. the suite was as expected. this hotel is very old and this suite was kind of a dump. very odd layout. the deck was nice, but the hot tub on the deck did not work. they told my wife they would give us a discount, but they did not. the fireplace did not work. when we called for help with that, nothing happened. no one came. they say they have HBO, but that did not work. the couch in the room was a joke. 50 years old, flat and very uncomfortable. doesn't seem right for them to charge the extra money for the suites, then have the stuff you pay extra for not work. could be construed as ripping people off. i've a mind to call the general manager and complain and try to get a discount, but reading some of these other reviews, it probably wouldnt do any good. stay somewhere else nicer for your money.

« Great Place in Iowa »

Love this place. Staff very helpful. Rooms always clean. Like that they have smoking rooms. Breakfast is good or better at this location than at some others. One even had omelets! Pool always clean and inviting. Great place for a family to gather.

    « BED BUGS! »

Stay away from this hotel!!! We had bed bugs in our room, and when we told the front desk about it, the only thing that they did was give us some garbage bags to pack our clothes in. No apology, no concern, no offer to help us to get our money back. I am sure that they did nothing to kill the bugs, and most likely the bugs were in other rooms and not just ours. STAY AWAY!!!!

    « Suite deal! »

What a wonderful experience to stay in such a beautiful, comfortable suite at such a great rate! The fireplace made the chilly, rainy holiday away from home more festive. The helpful yet non-intrusive staff made everything easy and relaxing for our family time together.

    « Dated »

First, the hotel had a shoddy makeover at some point in the last 10 years. They took out the moat and drawbridge (seriously) and the restaurant which was dark and scary anyway. I did a priceline express deal and got stuck there. Anyway. They chose to keep super weird aspects from the hotel's former life as a medieval style hotel i.e. the beds with the high canopy style and the weird shield door plates which are just super tired and worn. The carpeted stairs in the lobby are just bad. Fixtures are very very old, I'm talking down to doorknobs and lightswitches. Just bizarre. And the whole place smelled like curry. Not a little. Like enough that it felt like living in a dorm. After opening the door, my boyfriend just laughed and laughed because it is so dated. What I will say is that it was clean and safe and quiet. Not a place for romance, it's too goofy, but not terrible if you're just going to sleep.

« Nice Place ,loved it »

Not sure why some people have given bad reviews. The property is centrally located, nice and clean,Huge Indoor Pool area,New breakfast room.Seems to have undergone a remodel in recent past, with new lights, exterior stone work. Will definitely stay again, didnt see anyone complaining to the front desk during our stay there.

    « Mixed experience »

slow check-in service .waited at least 10 minutes for clerk to return. lobby restroom not clean- no paper towels or toilet paper. overhead light in room did not work. However, very attentive breakfast staff. clean room and comfortable bed. very good location. nice Mexican restaurant next door.

« Cheap but not worth it »

When I went in to check in the desk clerk had a sign that said, "I'm busy helping other guests, thanks for understanding." No,he was in the office watching tv, We didn't check in until after 7 and the first room we went into hadn't been cleaned. The next room we were given was a riot. Nothing went together. The beds had fabric wrapped around the top, the sinks were modern, the carpet was old and stained, and the lighting was awful! When we went out the side door trash was piled all over. The door to the room had four locks on it, making me question the safety. It was cheap, but we opted to change hotels for the next night

« Think twice before you stay »

We reserved two rooms, non-smoking, first floor, credit card guaranteed and AAA rate. One room was unsafe (door would not lock) and there was no other room to give us - the hotel was sold out. Both rooms were obviously smoking rooms, on the second floor. One room had the bed upstairs in a loft and the bathroom was down stairs. The hotel was very dated, the rooms smelled severely of smoke, had cigarette burns on the furniture and carpet, and were not clean. When we complained to the hotel onsite and through corporate, the manager credited us one room (broken lock) but insisted we pay for the second room. We reserved two rooms for a reason and the expectation to split our party up, leave my children there and we move to another hotel (the city was sold out) was completely unacceptable. Both rooms were unused and we left the hotel due to our safety concerns. The clerk we spoke with at Best Western that evening was rude at best and threatening at worst. For the second room, the hotel offered a future discount for the second room and points; this is unacceptable. It is unlikely we would visit this city again in the future (we were visiting for a football game) and would never consider staying in this facility again. This hotel should not be a AAA or Best Western hotel. It does not meet the normally positive brands of these two organizations.

« Loved the hotel atmosphere did not love the room. »

The hotel had a very nice atmosphere, not like alot of other hotels. Pool area was nice. We were sad there was not a hot tub. The beds were comfortable but the bathrooms are very small and the water pressure was awful. Hair dryer did not work in the room. Breakfast was not the best. The eggs had zero flavor and the bagels were hard as a rock. We would not go back to this hotel.

    « Fine experience »

Nick(?) at check in gave us a much nicer room, an upgrade, when the inside corridor room that opened into the pool area lacked ambient light -- too dark for my compromised vision. He went to a lot of trouble to get us into a suite at no extra charge.

    « Good comfortable VALUE »

The facility has been handsomely and smartly re-decorated. The rooms are very well equipped with suites being the best value in Iowa city. The staff was most accommodating and genuinely wanted to be of service. The breakfast offered a variety of selections with quality and quantity. The beds are extremely comfortable especially the kings. The suite decor is relaxing and unique.

    « Pleasantly Surprised! »

Wasn't sure of the hotel as we pull off one of the town's major roadways, into their parking lot, but I have to say, once I walked inside and was greeted by one of the nicest, sweetest young men (he was early 20's), I think my opinion changed. This is not your typical upscale 5 star hotels but, it is quaint and clean. Old school charm. The room was huge (king suite with fireplace) and the bed was fabulous! I don't remember ever falling asleep in a hotel that fast. The burgundy walls, with dark wood bed surround made the bedroom feel warm and cozy. I will definitely be headed back. There are multiple rooms/suites to choose from. I think the queen bed loft with hot tub is definitely in my future. My new "go to" hotel while staying in Iowa City.

    « BED BUGS »

Hotel manager did not seen surprised when we left at 4am .... STAY AWAY, 6 days later I am still boiling bleaching and itching room 159 Wed OCT 7 (actually killed and delivered to front desk) BED BUGS

    « Best western Canterbury inn &suites »

Experience was poor. Desk staff did not have a handle on rooms vacated and occupied. Twice I was booked into rooms already occupied. Was given a key to a room and entered it only to find clothing hanging and a handbag on the shelf. The room we eventually wound up in was furnished with two queen size four poster beds that had tattered gold shears hanging from the top. And ther were spots in the drapes. Finally while I left the room and my wife who dressing, the housekeeper saw me leave and went to the room and opened the door on my wife.

« not as good as it used to be »

this is still a neat place to stay but seems to have slipped in quality a little. there is no more on sight restaurant and the loft suits are a little grubby. there was only one chair in the living area for two of us and no table. i think it changed owners so some things have changed. the price went down so maybe theres a trade off. probably won't stay here again if we had a choice. but thats us. there is a new breakfast area and workout room since we were there last and they are very nice. we enjoyed the local attractions of which there are quite a few.

    « Disappointed »

We very much wanted to enjoy this property with themed rooms. The hotel hallways and rooms smelled strongly of smoke. The room we booked was not available - we were give a room with a similar size bed. The furniture was old and worn. The air conditioner in the loft area was dripping into a garbage pail already 1/4 full when we arrived. We were offered a different room, which we checked out but it was just as sad, and the stairs to the loft were even scarier than the original room assigned.

    « Great value »

Great place to stay in our business travels. The old castle style is interesting and will consider bringing the kids for a fun visit. Pool is located in the center of the surrounding rooms which would be convenient for parties.

    « False Advertising & Dirty »

We found empty beer cans in the room. Had to wait to check into room due to repairs being done but got an extra hour added to our check out time for the inconvenience. The whirlpool tub and private patio we were looking so forward to. We got out there and it had maybe 3 ft standing green water with floating booze cans in it. That was a major let down. Need to remove it from advertisement or fix it so that it is no longer misleading.
