    « Excellent lunch »

We called into Grantham after a visit to Boundary Mill and this was the first bar we saw. The four of us were the only people in the bar restaurant area and got served quickly. The food took a while to come but it was delicious and very good value for money if you chose from the lunch specials. We were disappointed with Grantham but can recommend this for lunch

    « Relaxing chilled time »

Love this hotel. Always so cozy, always made to feel very welcome by the staff, Jane is always very accommodating to us Food always spot on. Hotel to be stayed at any time of year. Winter for me as its so lovely and cozy. And you can take your dog to this hotel, which is for me an added bonus. Thankyou again for making our stay memorable.

    « Some Good - Some Bad »

I last visited this hotel 30 years ago when I lived in Grantham so booked a one night stay for old times sake and to see if the town had changed. We parked in the hotel car park at the rear and arrived to find a deserted reception so stood a short time (no bell to ring). The lady was very nice and chatty though and offered to help with our bags to the first floor room. The room was cold (frost forecast) and the heating was off - poor customer care. Turned it on and we soon warmed up. The room was a good size but tired and scruffy although somehow in keeping with this very old building. The fully tiled bathroom was very cold too but the radiator had been 'doctored' to stop you turning it on. The toilet seat was very insecure. The thick layer of black dust on the door frame summed up the attention to cleaning detail. This was reinforced by the accumulation of dust on the floor of the fitted wardrobe. Cleaning is not a strong point here! One of the bedside table lamp bulbs was broken. We ate in the bar area and the service was really good and pleasant. The slow cooked pork was average, the fat being a bit gooey. After a good walk around the town we went up to bed. The bed is without doubt one of the hardest we have slept on - should be 'tried' to sleep on - and had an uncomfortable night. We went down for breakfast just after 9am and sat for a good 5 minutes before anyone approached. Telling us to help ourselves to fruit juice, cereals etc we pointed out there were no glasses which were quickly brought. Another 5 minutes and our order was taken - porridge and smoked haddock with poached eggs. Coffee tea and toast arrived and we waited. And waited. In fact we waited 30 minutes. Finally served with the excuse, 'the smoked haddock takes a long time to cook'. Oh dear. Check out was a perfunctory affair with no pleasantries, simply handed the code to escape the car park. The hotel is a really nice old building oozing history and charm. The room standard lets it down badly but with attention to detail and cleaning, it could be so much better.

« Nice but shame about the heating »

I booked a superior room which was nice - but freezing. I notified reception at 18:30 and an electric heater was supplied (along with an assurance that a maintenance man was en route) but the heating was not working when i checked out at 9.30am. Breakfast and room (apart from temperature) great.

    « Comfort and class »

Lovely historical hotel with lovely updated comfortable rooms and an excellent standard of cleanliness. Staff were very friendly and helpful. We stayed for one night to meet up with family. Great snug which offered comfort and privacy. Great service and the dining room was an historical dream. The evening meal was well cooked with great choice on the menu. The breakfast too offered masses of choice and was well cooked. Would highly recommend this hotel.

« Knights Chamber Angel & Royal Hotel »

Arrived in Grantham at lunch time on Saturday from London en route to visit friends. 5 star welcome from Sarah the Reception Manager who was very happy to show a selection of rooms in this genuinely historic hotel. Received a complementary upgrade from a superior room to a luxury four poster room. Spotlessly clean and warm room and Bathroom. Recently replaced carpets throughout, white fluffy towels and new white bedding but on a non premier inn mattress. Hotel has not recently been updated therefore it does have a somewhat dated feel but this is compensated for by the amazing historic feel of the public areas of the hotel. Very comfortable stay, not a luxury boutique hotel but a good 3 star hotel with a fabulous welcome on arrival and from all staff encountered throughout the stay.

    « Fading glory »

With the demise of the TIC in the North one has to be grateful for clever phones and the apps, alas when one is booking one does not get the local knowledge until it is too late - they (TIC) may well have known of a better venue, nice once but now very tired rather like the rest of the town. Got to see the blue plaque for Maggie, not a lot else to do. Had a creaky nights sleep, ate breakfast & went on our way.

    « Excellent historical hotel »

We were booked in here for 3 nights but liked it so much that we stayed a fourth. We had a package that included dinner and breakfast and both had great menu choices, all the food was delicious. We had a 4-poster canopy bed in a large room which was very pleasant and comfortable. Staff were very nice and helpful, especially Christine. We really liked the historical aspect of this hotel, and even though it's several centuries old, the plumbing and heating are well updated. Also, there's ample free parking that's easily accessible and only steps away.

« A medieval banquet in the Kings room »

The Lincolnshire Branch of the Richard 111rd Society held a medieval banquet to celebrate their 40th anniversary. We chose the Angel and Royal because Richard 111rd actually stayed here. It was a fantastic occasion with medieval entertainment and lovely costumes. The food was provided by the hotel and it was delicious. We tried to keep the food as authentic as possible and Jane the manager and the chef pulled out all the stops to give us what we needed. The staff were excellent, courteous and efficient.. Some of our guests stayed overnight and reported comfortable rooms and a superb breakfast.Thank you Jane and her staff for an unforgettable evening.

« Nice building, shame about the breakfast! »

Such a shame that our stay here was marred by two things. Someone knocking on our door at 5.40am and then again 10 minutes later. No idea who this was! Perhaps issue more than 1 key to guests that intend staying out or returning separately ,at least they will know which room they are looking for! Then breakfast. Waitress took our order for cooked breakfast and coffee and toast, the coffee and toast was sent to the wrong table,we thought, never mind we'll have theirs when it comes out. It never did. Another 15 minutes went by, the same waitress came to take our order, I told her we had already ordered and it was her that wrote it down. Another 15 minutes later and a different waitress came to take our order. We hadn't even been served our coffee and toast. I just told her I wasn't waiting any longer and left, only to be met by the original waitress bringing our cooked breakfast. I was too wound up too eat by now. so checked out and went to Morrison's for breakfast. Really need to organise your staff better!

« First visit to Grantham »

Lovely old building with some beautiful features. We stayed in the Kings a Room with the four poster bed - lovely spacious room however the pillows were extremely hard which made sleeping uncomfortable. The breakfast was very disappointing too, deep fried sausages, over cooked bacon, sour milk at the buffet bar and pastries that were congealed and stale. Not really worth £93.

« Historic Hotel. Loved It »

Dog friendly hotel was why we chose it. All staff made us so welcome especially a waitress of two weeks called Ellie. It is a well appointed hotel with real historic features . Room is really homely with all expected facilities. Will be back ??

« Oldest Inn in Britain »

An ancient higgledy piggledy hotel - host to many kings. A little tired in places but charming. Excellent room. The bar could do with some TLC as it appears a jumble of furniture - not cosy at all. Food was very good in the functional bistro. The star of our stay was Jane who was running the show. Excellent customer service with a smile. Seeing her help and tutor a rookie first night waitress/bar person was a lesson in helpfulness.

    « Dinner for two »

For a first visit, we were both in for a lovely surprise, lovely ambiance, friendly attentive staff, food very reasonable, I would recommend the haddock and chips which was yummy, will most diffinatly be visiting again.

« Characterful old coach house »

I've stayed at this place too many times to count. Prices are as competitive as any other location in or around the town and the location is a winner. It's such an old hotel that it needs constant repairs and attention to some of the rooms, but that is to be expected. If you can put up with a few little things not working properly 100% such as the curtains not drawing fully, you get a charming and characterful room, nice helpful staff and a well prepared breakfast area. English breakfast is very good and I never fail to have one every time I return. Free car parking at the rear and Wifi available but generally terrible access. Perhaps it has been upgraded since I last visited but if not, it really needs to be in this day and age.

« Bistro has terrible service »

Though very pleasant the staff were we had terrible service. We walked into the bistro at 18:45 and the had to wait until 19:15 before anybody came to take our order. At this time we told the person that we had to be somewhere at 20:00. We reminded the staff that we needed to be somewhere at 20:00. At 19:40 we were told that our meals would be with us in a few minutes. At 19:45 we decided to leave, offering to pay for the two soda waters ( which really tasted as if they sparkling water) that we had received. The let us off this cost. Waiting for nearly 50 minutes from when we arrived I don't call good service.

« The Best Best Western »

A lovely hotel with a traditional feel. We stayed in a double room and it was lovely, four-post bed and exceptionally clean. Just over the road from the town centre and a short walk from a number o local pubs which you must visit!

    4
    « Surprisingly good! »

A lovely quirky old property - actually a combination of many old properties spread over several levels and across the (pedestrian) street - joined by a fully enclosed walkway. It is better than their website suggests; I had visions of a glorified pub with rooms, but it is significantly better, and it has an excellent restaurant. The staff are all exceptionally helpful. There is more than ample free parking for residents to the rear of the hotel. The room was well furnished, very comfortable and exceptionally clean. The only downside was a bit of chaos at breakfast on both mornings - possibly as it was a weekend and it could be that all the guests happened to pick the exact same time - so there was a wait for a table. That said, the most helpful staff provided us with coffee in the lounge whilst we waited, so full marks for customer service. The tariff was perfectly fair, and I'd have no hesitation in visiting again. Grantham itself is somewhat mixed, and can be a bit noisy on a Friday and Saturday night, but there was peace and tranquility at all times within the hotel.

« Great food, room not so great »

Lovely characterful hotel. We stayed for two nights Friday and Saturday during the science fair. Room wasn't great and looked really tired for £110 per night. Two bulbs needed replacing in lights above the bed, bathroom door wouldn't close, one of the convenient electrical sockets wouldn't work, the bed creaked terribly. Even turning over in the night you'd wake up due to the noise, and the pillows were like cardboard. Didn't sleep well at all. We've stayed at the local premier inn before and although the rooms there were bland we had a better nights sleep there. We reported the issues after the first night and asked if we could change rooms. There were no rooms free, we were told the issues would be reported and the blown bulbs would be sorted. Returning to our room later no bulbs had been changed, and the bathroom door still didn't close. That all said the food and service elsewhere was fantastic, breakfast was lovely. So comes highly recommended on the food front.

    « Louie's wake »

We wanted somewhere just to go and remember our dog Louie who ended his days today. It has been a while since I've been to the Angel and Royal and we have had some amazing experiences there like when they did a meal with a celebrity chef and they even won an award for the toilets. The greeting from Sam downstairs was lovely and he sent us upstairs to the dining room where we Had wait a while as there was only one waitress. She told us to choose a table and she would be with us. Choices made, wine ordered eventually. So what did we think? Bread rolls were they meant to be crispy or soft? They were dry and hard to tell what they were meant to be. My daughters terrine looked good and she reports tasted good. My prawn cocktail was a throwback to the 70's and was tasteless and came with the bread pre buttered- what is that? We both ordered the turbot and it looked ok but they served it while one of us was at the ladies. What has happened to the etiquette that you don't serve unless all parties are at the table. Once again it was all just a bit tasteless and very disappointing. Grantham really needs a fine dining venue and even a champagne bar. This building has so much potential an deserves so much better. Thank you Sam for making the service!

    « A good nights sleep »

Very comfortable with helpful staff. Good menu The service was of a high quality and the staff very caring. Car park is not easy to find, the signage could be improved It is a very interesting town and hope to return to this hotel in the near future

    2
    « Good location »

Good car park, the hotel especially the rooms in the courtyard, need a serious upgrade, carpets dirty, cistern in bathroom needs repairing, the bed was very hard & room very warm. The staff were very friendly, but the food & service was terrible, some staff training maybe would help, I have never before had fried scrambled egg, which looked like omelette gone wrong, it looked simply awful & inedible. We did book an evening meal, thinking there was an a la carte Restaraunt upstairs, but were told our meal was in the bistro, same room as breakfast, what happened to the Restaraunt?.

« Nice old hotel, service could be sharper »

We stayed two nights and had a lovely, clean and spacious room. Our dog was made very welcome (only a few dog rooms) and the staff were friendly and welcoming. The restaurant was an historic, attractive room and the food was good - not cordon bleu, but good. Breakfast was served downstairs in the bistro and while the food was fine, other aspects weren't! There were too few tables, meaning we had to wait and the buffet was not replenished enough. On both days we had to ask for glasses and bowls to be provided and we gave up waiting for orange juice! Lovely, smiling and chatty staff but we felt more training in getting the basics right would make a big difference. We also found Grantham rather unsavoury in part, with lots of shouting and swearing in the street outside local pubs. Not all the time, but on three separate occasions during our stay. There is a large secure car park to the rear of the hotel.

    « Clean and comfortable »

Stayed for the weekend to attend a party locally. Very interesting and historic inn. All staff were pleasant and helpful. Only problem was the breakfast staff - mostly young people with one "older" woman. I asked a young lad for the tea to be changed, as the order delivered was wrong . . . 2 different members of staff asked me "what's wrong with the tea?" in loud voices and an accusatory manner!!!!! Good job I'm not sensitive!! Next day - tea delivered . . . toast crumbs inside the pot!!! With just a bit more common sense and care the service could have been satisfactory. The food itself seemed good quality.

« It will surprise you »

We visited the Angel and Royal for one night and we were pleasantly surprised. As my wife is disabled I asked for a suitable room and we were given room 107 with a walk-in shower room. This room wasn't within the main hotel section but a few yards along the mews. A couple of issues such as a bulb blown in the shower room but nothing that detracted from our stay. The shower was uber hot and powerful, just what you want. The room was a good size, wardrobe, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, tea/coffee facilities and a wall minted TV....what more do you want? We have a small motorised electric scooter (fits in the car boot) and the good news is that this can be driven from the outside Mews straight into the room, a wheelchair would be fine but a larger scooter a potential no-no so best to check. Whilst we are on the disability subject please note that this hotel does not have a lift so definitely best to make sure that you get a ground floor room if a staircase is an issue. What this does mean is that you can't access the 1st floor restaurant, we therefore went to another restaurant (Nepalese) but that's another story. The positive news is that breakfast is served on the ground-floor so that's not an issue, what is though (on 4th September) is the actual breakfast. We always gauge our hotel stays by the sausage's, unfortunately the Angel & Royal fall short of the mark ( sorry). Breakfast was a let down, sausage (was this Lincolnshire or rubbershire?) over cooked and tasteless, fried bread too hard, bacon too fatty and under cooked. I had to drop a star for this poor early morning experience sorry. Okay, that was the only let down and actually didn't affect our overall experience. Bar is small but cosy, every (and I mean every) member of staff was spot on... well done. Car park is close by and free, don't forget that the code changes daily. Okay, the breakfast was a let down but why do you book a hotel, yep... for someone to sleep. Leaving the best for last, we had a great nights sleep made even better by two single mattresses in a double bed (with her snoring maybe separate rooms would be better !!). To close, if you want an English history lesson over a pint, service by 5-star staff and a cracking nights sleep then the Angel & Royal is definitely the hotel for you.

    « Clean & cosy »

Polite welcome at 2130 hrs on the Thursday evening. On my own, room top of hotel third floor. Nice & clean. Not that large but adequate for one. Really glad the windows were open as the room was very hot. The outside temperature wasn't that bad either! Good English breakfast. Awoken by bin men at 0630hrs in the courtyard area! Just the one night stop over. I would use the

« Nice room and lovely setting »

Stayed here on a trip and was pleasantly surprised, nice place and very oldy worldy. The stocks in the yard are a nice touch! Room was comfortable and very reasonably priced. Good position in the town and plenty of parking which is nice, good wifi too so I can't fault it.

    3
    « Oldy worldy »

Stayed in the 4 poster room as a deal with dinner B +B, overall a good experience and would recommend, but the premises is old and not everything is perfect but the food and staff were all pleasant, nice restaurant, two real ales, good WIFI and secure parking too.

    4
« Good place to stay in Grantham »

The hotels is very convenient for the town being right in the centre with good parking close by. The rooms was modern and clean and the staff helpful and friendly. We had a couple of minor problems which we reported to the staff which they said would be followed up.

    « Lovely restaurant »

This is a lovely old inn, we didn't stay there but ate in the king's restaurant twice. Lovely ambience with soft music in the background. Excellent friendly service and superb food. Sword fish with sweet and sour veg was delectable. Lots of history about hotel in Reception on way to toilets which were a cut above the norm with real towels.

    « :: Wonderful Homely Hotel :: »

I am a regular at this hotel, in fact I stay at this hotel every week for business. The hotel and it's staff are absuletely brilliant and very friendly. The rooms are clean with all the facilities such as an iron, hairdryer and tea and coffee making. The dinner menu is great and the food is always great. The cooked breakfast is outstanding. It's made to order and the service is great. Although the hotel is located on the main high street but with your windows closed you cannot hear any noise. All the 29 rooms are individually decorated from a 4 poster room to a king size bed. There is also free WiFi and works great. The only negative point I need to point out is that they have just introduced a £5 room service charge. I do feel as a regular customer it's bit unfair to charge especially when you do not like to dine on your own in a full restaurant. I can definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who visits Grantham for business or pleasure. Great friendly staff.

Wow what a beautiful hotel In Grantham High Street So full of history Clean and Tidy, Staff very welcoming. Rooms are excellent and large and they take DOGS Food is amazing. « Lovely hotel »

Me and my family stayed here for a night recently for a family wedding. The staff were very polite and helpfull. The hotel is lovely. We stayed in a deluxe room with my partner and 3 children in room 203 and it was so spacious with a sofa bed for the older kids. The only thing that could be improved would be to get air conditioning. My room and the rooms my family had were all like green houses not good when your trying to get ready for a wedding. The room used for the ceremony and sit down meal was beautiful. And the breakfast was delicious

    4
    « Comfort & Pleasure »

Difficulty in finding the parking place overcame very quickly, even if we had to go around the block a couple of time! BUT we were welcomed with a very big smile. Even though a very busy weekend we and our party were very, very well looked after. From a buffet meal for 60+ (60 booked BUT there were more than 10 extras!) to the check out on the Sunday after a FULL breakfast it would be difficult to fault the staff and service. YES the furnishings could perhaps be tidied up BUT it is a very old Hotel. We certainly ALL enjoyed ourself.

    4
    « Well Looked After! »

We stayed for the weekend with a large group. We were given room 215 on check in, The Rose Chamber, which was a distance from reception up and down several half flights of stairs. It was worth the wait, we had a lovely, large room with a king size bed(very comfy) a separate bathroom off the corridor into the room with two basins, a toilet and a shower over the bath. The towel bundle had huge bath sheets, great when you are above average height, and some pleasant toiletries. There was a large mirror with double plug point so great for hair drying and straighteners, no struggling with a short dryer lead! We had a tasty buffet meal on Friday evening, in the King's room, very old and atmospheric. The staff were all friendly and helpful. One slight disappointment was breakfast on the Saturday when the staff struggled to cope with the numbers because "you all came together". On Sunday this was rectified, both days breakfasts were good- a good choice not just 'full English' or pastries. I really enjoyed my sausage and bacon breakfast bap. Reception staff were also friendly and helpful and the location right in town meant we could get out and explore the town easily. There was so much more to Grantham than we expected. The car parking was plentiful, at the rear of the hotel, we found it easily as we used the sat nav reference from our booking email. Overall a good stay, we would return should we need a hotel in that area, thank you.

    « Different! »

Had an overnighter here. Took me a while to find car park as Grantham likes its One Way systems! Hotel itself was nice. Staff pleasant. My room was in an out building. Quite nice. Comfortable and spacious. Note though... Walls are paper thin. Remember rhat if you are having a nice conversation with your partner, or watching something adult on your laptop. Could get embarrassing! Restaurant ok bit menu basic. I had fish and chips which was tasty enough. Another annoying thing was rhe Clock tower around the corner going off every half hour. But thats not the hotels fault. All in all a nice stay. Would I stay again? Probably.

    « Good central hotel »

Had a family weekend here. On check in the staff were very welcoming and helpful. Had room 114. Very good size a four poster bed and over looked the courtyard This is an old Inn and has been well refurbished recently. The King's dinning room has a wonderful setting . We had a family dinner here for 22 and they served us well and fast. Food well cooked and presented Certainly the place to stay if you are in Grantham. Thank you to all the staff that made our special weekend so successful

« Charming, Chintz, Character, a cracking find »

We just loved this hotel. It is a charming old building, full of character with a warmth that's hard to put into words. We came back after an evening out in Grantham and enjoyed a nightcap in the bar (Sam the new barman, you will go far). Thanks Angel & Royal, we hope to see you again.

    « Long Weekend Away »

We chose The Angel Royal as we have stayed in lots of Best Western hotels previously as we like the fact the hotels are all individual & have their own character - we were not disappointed with The Angel Royal, we were attracted by the hotel's much deserved excellent reviews and it's amazing history. The restaurant serves very good food & the breakfast was as good as I've had anywhere. The manager of the hotel, although very busy, took the time to personally show us The Angel Bar & to explain about the ancient tunnels & amazing history of the hotel. The King's Room at the hotel is a must see! We used the hotel as a base to visit BT Belton House, NT Woolsthorpe Manor Birth place of Sir Issac Newton. Lincoln Cathedral & Nottingham were an easy drive away. The nearby church in Grantham & Sir Issac Newton's school are only a short walk from The Angel. This hotel is an unexpected gem situated right in the centre of Grantham with plenty of free parking!

    « Not the best!!!! »

Not one of the best hotels I have stayed in. No toilet paper in the room, broken toilet flush, rotting Windows that could not close, dirty towels and raw food served in the restaurant. In need of a lick of paint and carpets cleaned. Due to open windows a lot of outside noise, staff talking in courtyard etc heard early in the morning.

    3
« Some good, some not so good but nothing bad »

Interesting and historical building in Grantham town centre. Excellent parking facilities and friendly, polite and helpful staff. Our room was comfortable and very clean but also very warm, even with no heating on. The windows could only open about six inches so it was difficult to cool down. We were also opposite the aircon motors which made an annoying noise but only some of the time. The courtyard below is used as a smoking area and the smoke drifted into our room !!. Breakfast varied over the two days but was substantial with the most comprehensive choice I have ever come across. Sunday evening meal was not expensive but was also very average. Roast potatoes and (huge) Yorkshire pudd over done and veg underdone and hard. I can only speak for one room out of many, rather weirdly our kettle switched itself on in the middle of the night !! Luckily it had water in it and the noise woke us up, otherwise who knows what might have happened. I am sure that a different room on a different occasion would produce an entirely different review.

Lovely place, room was very big And the bed was one of the most comfortable I've ever stayed in. Had one of there sandwiches for lunch was amazing. Breakfast next morning was lovely plenty of choice. All staff very helpful and friendly.

    « Family wedding »

What a lovely, friendly hotel. Clean confortable with a fabulous history . The down side was that there was no disabled provision, and aged relatives with poor mobility struggled with the stairs and steps in the hotl.

« Gorgeous old spacious rooms »

Very surprised by this hotel. From the outside it doesn't look like much, but once you work out that the parking is around the back of the hotel, the inside is deceiving. Check-in was smooth, though I wasn't asked if I had parked in the hotel car park or what time check out was (hadn't found the parking at this point). The room was completely unexpected. A large spacious twin with a hallway from the bed room to the bathroom, which held a pair of vintage weighting scales! Everything was clean and well serviced. Cannot comment on breakfast as we didn't make it, but it's a shame it's only on until 1000 on weekends. Checkout is at 1100! I had assumed 1200, but was rang at 1130 to advise of the time (so they did give me 30 mins extra). Location is right in Grantham high street, so convenient to local amenities.

« Excellent in every aspect »

What a fantastic stay my wife and I had at the Angel & Royal Hotel. This is a brilliant hotel - the staff, rooms and location are superb. We stayed here as to explore the local 'Newton' history, so being in Grantham was ideally situated from Wrenthorpe manor just 15 minutes drive away. Firstly, the staff of this hotel are to be commended, every single one of them from check in, waiting and chef are all excellent, being a seasoned traveler i can say it was some of the best customer service my wife and I have ever received. When we arrived my wife needed to eat something due her medical condition, we was advised courteously that our first choice would take some time, but was promptly and professionally given an alternative. This really fixed my wifes diabetes with no fuss and the manner of the young man was exemplary, could easily be a 5*+ international hotel member of staff ! Our room was the 'kings room' four poster, it was absolutely stunning, if you get a chance to stay in this room, please do ! We was lucky just got it allocated, but the bath, four poster bed and size of room is brilliant, again we had reasons to rest/sleep during the day and the incredibly heavy curtains blocked out the light. We was also provided a very good fan to keep us cool on one of the warmest days of the year. The soap/bathroom items were of a very good quality too, i had a fantastic soak in the bath and felt like a king being in there ! The catering was sublime, I got a package deal (well worth it!) so only had to pay for drinks, which had a good selection of wines and local ales (I started with a local ale and shared a bottle of sweet Italian champagne with my wife) it was a great meal which we both really enjoyed. I was later informed that the bookings for that night had suddenly increased, and the staff was brought in to cover it, i have to say they done so excellently, there was alot of people eating/drinking and the wait times were not unreasonable, and the waiting staff were very polite and courteous in what was a very busy time, again 5* service ! The receptionist gave us advise on what else to see in the locality, so we headed off to enjoy the countryside in our car, it was splendid, coming from Sussex which isn't short of great scenery it was great to see such beautiful and well preserved houses. We followed the road to Lincoln and thoroughly enjoyed the massive cathedral, all thanks to the tip from the receptionist. The hotel is really well situated in town. I had a pleasant walk around after my breakfast (again, this was a delicious meal!) and enjoyed the walk along the river and to the park, everything is so well kept. Parking is ample and around the rear of the hotel, it is secured with a gate and I think it has CCTV, so i had no real concerns of leaving my car there. It was very convenient. All in all, this was a fantastic stay and our trip was made all the better by the brilliant staff. Highly recommend and lightly to go again if ever in the area.

« Interesting hotel in centre »

Stayed for one night mid week for dinner bed and breakfast with friends. Hotel very old with great history but could do with updating in many areas. Staff very friendly and helpful. No lift so you need to be able to manage stairs. Room was very hot and pillows unacceptable as they were so hard to sleep on. Bathroom was very good but toiletries minimal and cheap. Also one small bottle of water between 2 people? Ate in restaurant at night. Service great food average. Desserts still frozen and tuna over cooked. Would stay here again if in Grantham but find somewhere else to eat. Car parking good plenty of room behind hotel.

« Town centre hotel with loads of history »

Have stayed here often when in the area - claimed to be the country's oldest hotel, and to have had several kings sleep there, the A&R is a delightful venue with loads of character to go with that history. Located right in the town centre, the A&R has its own free to use car park but - because of its location - you can't pull up at the door for drop off, access is via a flagged yard. The hotel has 29 bedrooms over three floors but no lift; at least one ground floor bedroom has been fitted out for disabled access. The rooms have bags of character - like period piece furniture, large comfy beds - but also have free wifi and a bureau to work at; this comes at a price with the odd creaky floorboard and some older fittings being a bit below par on occasion. Outside noise is surprisingly limited in most rooms, as many of them face an internal courtyard rather than the high street. Evening meals range from around £10-£15 and all ours were of an excellent standard this time - given the hotel's proximity to the town centre, a range of other eateries are easily reached if you want alternatives. The bar has a couple of local real ales on as well as your typical big brand alternatives. Breakfast involves a wide range of cooked items (including lovely local Lincolnshire sausages) and a good selection of pastries, cereals, fresh fruit, etc. Staff are regularly efficient and helpful on both sittings. Hotel has meeting room / conference / function facilities - not used.

Fabulous Sunday lunch on Father's Day! A great roast with hearty portions and full of flavour. Myself had the crab cakes (fantastic) beef and mousse! Great veg selection with mains and my favourite carrot and swede. Service was spot on from the young gentleman an a great ambience in a relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommended.

I have been staying regularly at the Angel and Royal for nearly 12 months. One of the oldest Coaching Inns in the country the A&R offered me a warm and friendly welcome. Rooms are clean and good size and beds are comfortable. The food is very good so I rarely eat anywhere else even though the hotel is situated in the centre of Grantham. All the staff are friendly and happy to help. I am really glad that I found this hotel as they have made it a home from home.

« Beautiful building in a great location »

We stayed for 2 nights at this hotel. I would dearly loved to have given 4 stars. But...there were a few issues which felt significant given the price tag. Starting with the positives, the staff were mostly friendly. It's a beautiful and historical building and the location is perfect for exploring Grantham. The car park is very convenient and not too expensive. We stayed in a room which was accessed from outside the reception, so it felt a bit separate, which we liked. The room and bathroom were a good size, the shower was very good and the wardrobe space was ample. We were please that we were not overlooking a road/traffic. On the less positive front, while reasonably clean, it wasn't sparkling. The carpet was stained, areas of the bathroom were mucky and the fixtures and fittings felt cheap (eg the net curtains were stapled up). The soundproofing wasn't great and we could hear people talking in the next room. I'm not precious about these things - and I don't like being a Debbie Downer as times are tough out there - but it wasn't a cheap stay. Had it been cheaper, these things would not have bothered me. We had breakfast at the hotel on our final morning. It's around £10 per person. This is probably a bargain if you're a meat eater, as you get a full English including Lincolnshire sausage, back bacon and black pudding as well as other things. We paid the same amount for the vegetarian option and felt completely ripped off: the egg and beans were ok but lowlights included half a field mushroom each and one horrible veggie "sausage" made out of squashed vegetables and rice (please at least provide Quorn or Linda McCartney sausages). It seems really unfair to charge the same for that as a full English. So we were unfortunately a bit disappointed as we'd had high hopes. It has so much potential, but for us, it didn't feel like that was being fulfilled.

this hotel made our stay fantastic,we have a very well behaved yorkie who was a rescue dog and finds it hard to be left, no problem here. the place needs a little bit of paint but its verey nice with big rooms and shawers. and staff who will try to help with anything

Lots of history, friendly and very helpful staff. A hotel, with real character and charm. Only problem encountered was lack of hot water first thing in a morning (I am an early starter!), but this seems to have been resolved. Great breakfast and very extensive/accessible car parking. As a hotel regular I always enjoy my visits.

    « Trainer and Assessor »

Some good customer service but decor is dated and somewhat lets the place down. Hurt knee in shower which was met with no apology or question as to how I was injured. Pest droppings outside window was ignored and again no apology! Fire Extinguishers in Hotel corridors where the wrong colour coding in line with current Fire regulations and is a worry.

« Poor service and poor food »

Me and my colleague visited this hotel for business on 8th and 9th of June. The hotel looked quaint from the outside but inside it was dated. The first night food we asked if we could mix and match the menus the guy serving is said no we had to stick to one menu. So we ordered the starter salmon roulade was very nice however the Brie in a bread bin left much to be desired. We both had steak which was edible but the chips were hard. The following night we had a young girl who works a few nights a week was very helpful she told us we could mix and match the menu and was shocked to find out the night before that we couldn't. She was very friendly and was always at hand. We enjoyed garlic mushrooms and home made burgers that were very nice. Breakfast the eggs were snotty however the beans were hot! The biggest downfall to the hotel was my colleague was in the shower mid afternoon and the shower door snapped and was hanging off which caused him to fall and scrape his knee. (Picture below) on check out he spoke to the lady with brown hair and glasses and explained what had happened she didn't apologise and didn't say anything else. My colleague being a health and safety coordinator suggested he fill out an accident form the lady was not bothered by this but let him fill one out anyway! There was no apology for his injury along with no compensation. Not that we expected but a sorry this has happened would have been nice. Duty of candour and all that!

« Lovely stay in a lovely hotel »

My wife and I stayed here with our dog during a house move and had a great stay. The hotel has such character and has retained much of its charm whilst being modernised. Some of the decor in our room was tired but this didn't detract from the experience. The restaurant and bar are lovely with really nice breakfasts and a great evening meal menu. The staff were all friendly and welcoming and the hotel is well placed in the centre of Grantham.

« Such a shame, few let downs...... »

I stayed here for 2 nights on my own. I booked at the last minute and got a great deal, via booking.com. I drove to hotel, there is a car park at the back of the hotel, which belongs to hotel. Found it easily enough and there is a secure gate to allow you into the hotel. Loved what I saw when I first got there. It's an old hotel, right in the centre of Grantham The good bits: All the staff were very friendly, could not fault them. My room was lovely, spacious, well decorated, large bathroom. Great location, in centre of town. Lovely old world charm, in layout and decor, enjoyed sitting in lounge area. Not so good bits: The food did really let it down. Breakfast was mix of continental, and you can order hot food, which on both days just didn't taste good. I then ordered lasagna, chips and garlic bread on room service with cheesecake to follow. It arrived to room really quickly and was hot. It was bland and just didn't really taste of anything, the same with dessert. Such as shame as I did genuinely love the hotel. I would stay there again, for me it was great value, staff and venue lovely, shame about the food.

« Nice rooms with a bit of history »

The rooms were clean and spacious. I enjoyed reading all the old news paper articles in the common areas. There is also safe parking for your vehicle. The wifi was a bit unstable and completely down for 1 day of my stay. Overall the hotel offered great value.

« lovely barman, very poor food »

having had an awful roast dinner we thought we would give the downstairs a fair shot, man I wish I hadn't wasted the money my main of lamb and sausage tagine with pilau rice was awful, dry sausages with some curry powder sprinkled on them, the rice was stodgy and poorly cooked, I swapped with my partner that will eat anything and he even struggled. the wedges the other half had and chocolate mousse was nice but nothing special. the young man on the bar was nice but was running around doing the job of 2 people. finally they need to dust, I wrote in the champagne bottle beside my table.

    « Lovely historical hotel »

We were very surprised by the quaint and lovely hotel. Our room was spacious and had an elegance about it. The staff were wonderful and the hotel restaurant was very good. The history of the hotel is the best part. The oldest inn in Britain founded by the Knights Templar as a hostel, visited by King John, King Richard III and where he sent for the Great Seal to confirm the warrant for he Duke of Buckingham's arrest, King Edward VII and even the current Duchess if Cambridge! It is a lovely spot as is the town of Grantham, birthplace of Margaret Thatcher and site of one the original Eleanor crosses. Well worth a visit and stay at this hotel!

« In need of some TLC »

Stayed here for 1 Friday night. Not worth the £96 pound which did include a cooked breakfast. Waitress in breakfast room not friendly and breakfast average. Fruit salad seemed liked it had seen better days. This could be a great place to stay with some investment in the curtain blinds for starters which kept falling down in both the room and the bathroom. Not a comfortable or welcoming stay. Unlikely to stay again sorry!

It was lovely to be back at the hotel, a year after the wedding and the food is still excellent.. The atmosphere is great and we enjoyed ourselves, again. When they brought out my dessert they had even written 'Happy Anniversary' on the plate.. It was a lovely touch.. Thank you again Angel and Royal you made my day

« Not better than average, I'm afraid.... »

Stayed for 2 nights in May 2016. Let's start with the plus points. Friendly staff who were very helpful. Breakfast was really nice, lots of choice and good quality. However the hotel itself is very dated and tired. Room was covered in marks, scratches, scuffs and worn funature and upholstery. Our curtains were hanging off the track, the bathroom blind was broken and was permanently down, stained sofa with very worn cushions. The carpet was threadbare. It was a good size but looked very unloved. Wouldn't stay here again, wasn't worth the price. No safe, no fridge, very, very, dated.

    « Lovely Hotel »

We stayed over the Easter Break, got a room for a fantastic price The hotel was very central, has loads of amenities on the doorstep which are all walkable (Asda, Lidl etc) we used the hotel as a base inbetween visiting the many historic sites around Grantham. The room was very spacious and beautifully decorated. The breakfast was delicious and the staff were incredibly friendly And although the fire alarm did go off at 1am on our second night stay, it was handled well and ultimately things like this are out of the hotels control!

    « Historic Hotel »

Right in the center of Grantham is the Angel & Royal Hotel. It is mostly comfortable, a little creaky with age, but the atmosphere is actually quite nice. I actually would have enjoyed a little tour from the hotel staff, but they weren't especially interested in answering questions. Still, I went in the room where Richard III supposedly held court, and ordered the arrest of the Duke of Buckingham, and it is always interesting to imagine famous historical figures from another time. For modern tastes, the internet service is PITIFUL.

« Get Together of 9 friends (With 1 single) »

We are a group of long time friends from all over the UK who meet up half-way(ish) a few times a year. 9 of us stayed on a Saturday night in February, taking the "Winter Warmer" offer. 3 of us stayed for 2 nights on the same package. It included B&B and one night's 3 course evening meal. Excellent value for couples but good value too for single travelers. Parts of the Hotel date back to 1203 when it was a Coaching Inn, frequented by Royalty. This is evident in the Restaurant (on 1st floor), which is large, spacious and has the most amazing stone carvings above the little bay shaped windows. It also has all manner of relics displayed including a suit of armour (great fun for photo opportunities), various old weapons and a tapestry. Lighting was bright enough to see but subtle enough if you wanted a romantic meal. Food and Service was excellent. We enjoyed a leisurely meal (great if you're having 3 courses) but were not left waiting as our Waiter was very quietly attentive as to when we were ready for the next course. Only slight down side was, due to the size of our party, we were seated next to the music system, but it didn't bother us and the staff would have turned it down had we asked. Breakfast was served in the Bistro downstairs and our large party was accommodated next to this in the Bar area. Again, food was excellent with a large choice. Lincolnshire Breakfast was really good (great sausages) but some other group members had lighter options which went down equally well. Service was very efficient and attentive. The rooms were spacious, well decorated, each with a different name, the origin of which was explained on a card in each room. Great facilities in each room: tea coffee and biscuit tray, a complimentary bottle of water (always goes down well), hair dryer of the move-able type (also a plus), trouser press, arm chair and 2 other comfy chairs, 2 fold-able suitcase holders, good sized dressing table, FreeView TV, proper glasses (not plastic) of a decent size and plenty of hangers. Very comfy bed. Heating is centrally controlled and it did get very warm at night, but reception will accommodate any difficulties in this area. I just opened the window slightly. (Yes, the windows open!) I was a single in a double room (102) and in no way felt like the 2nd class citizen I've previously experienced. Both my room standard and view was equal to the rest of our party. Staff were extremely helpful, very efficient and very pleasant and cheerful. Grantham is a great base to explore some wonderful nearby places (go to the Tourist Information website for the area). We went to Stamford, 30 odd miles away on the Sunday. It's a stunning old town; very beautiful stone buildings and a great place to eat nearby (The Millstone..... reviewed separately). Lengthy review I know, but I would highly recommend this Hotel and would go back.

    « Historic refuge »

The Angel is aptly named. Apart from its wonderful history and unique location it has been my saviour more than once. Traditional and removed from the usual style of chain hotels, the service is pleasant, parking adequate and accommodation comfortable. A real advert for Margaret Thatcher's home town - solid and reliable. I have a particularly soft spot for this hotel as it allowed me to sleep in the hallway after the whole region including the A1 came to a halt during a heavy snowfall.

« Full of character but... »

Lovely old hotel, amazing history and it didn't look tired at all. Plus everywhere including the room was spotlessly clean. Great room, plenty of space but bed and pillows too hard for my liking. Staff all perfectly pleasant. Stayed here due to breaking up a long train journey which I make a couple of times a year and because I stayed here before, the highlight being the Angel bar, full of character with a roaring fire. Which this time was shut despite being advertised as open as Fridays and Saturdays only which is bad enough. (I stayed March 5th). The small bistro bar is not the same especially when connected to s busy restaurant and the constant noise of staff servicing the restaurant, washing plates, cutlery etc. in the bar was irritating. So will try somewhere else next time. Shame.

Ideally situated on the high street, large free car park to the rear. From checking in to checking out the staff were always very friendly and courteous. « Cosy Overnight Stay »

An old coaching Inn that has character, and typically the public rooms are compact. However, with open fire places there is a cosy feel to these rooms. That being said the room we were allocated was of a good size with all the necessary facilities, even if it was quite a walk up and down stairs. (Good exercise after dinner). The welcome was friendly and helpful as was the personnel in the bar and dining room. We found the meals, dinner and breakfast, to be of good quality and sufficiently substantial to meet our needs. It was nice to have a pre dinner drink sitting in front of an open fire which added to the overall atmosphere.

    « Excellent hotel »

This Best Western is a gem of a place. Reception was very friendly, room was spacious, bed very comfortable and you could here a pin drop - no noise from anywhere. We were in Room 215. We had dinner and breakfast in the hotel and found the food to be of a very high standard - couldn't fault it at all. If you need a hotel in this area, then try this one. One point against the hotel is that as it is an extremely old but beautiful building there are not any lifts, so people with mobility problems would find it difficult in part of the hotel we were in. However there may be accessible rooms elsewhere.

we booked for 5 people to have afternoon tea. I rang the week before as we had one lady who was a vegetarian I also asked for plain scone. when we got there the staff were really nice. food not so great only cheese option for the vegetarian , cake was quite stodgy and not cooked properly , asked where the plain scone was to be told they didn't have one but I could have a cheese scone . that was brought out very dry and just crumbled when I cut it. we all left quite a bit of food. to be fair they did knock money off as the choice for vegetarian was good. shame as I love the angel hotel, but I don't think we will be going again.

We wanted to visit this inn due to its history....king john & Richard III amongst the past visitors, 7 kings in total have stayed here. The staff were friendly and gave us a historical leaflet about the building, reputed to be the oldest inn in England. We ate in Bertie's Bistro which was quite quiet midweek but both our meals were very good. I just had the haddock and chips but the batter was perfect and homemade chips. Great!

    « Nice »

Stayed for 2 night on a business trip and training session at he hotel. The photos look great on the web site but once you get there is not that great. The parking is offsite and on a one way road, so if you miss it first time then you have to go around again and it's not well signposted. The hotel has some nice features but it sis not as luxurious as you would think. the staff were attentive. The food was OK but restaurant and bar very small. My room was good but it was too hot and I could not turn down the heat level as the thermostat was loose. I slept with the windows wide open in December. There are no lifts so being on the top floor was like a workout with the luggage.the business meeting rooms was nice but the poor internet connection made access tot the web frustrating all day long. Overall it was nice & clean.

Having stayed in many Best Western hotel this is like many dated but quant. The room I had had a four poster which was comfortable enough the post was in the way of the TV had to move the TV to be able to see all of the screen. Breakfast was reasonable. Only real down side was the car park is at the rear of the Hotel bit difficult to find on the first night. When I rang the hotel the young lady that answered easily directed me would appear to be a regular occurrence. Eat in twice on one occasion got fresh chips the other frozen even though the menu said fresh. When I mentioned the waiter/duty manager said he would speak to chef that was it.

« One of the Best »

Myself and two friends stayed at the Angel and Royal Hotel with our wife's on 21st of December and what a gem this turned out to be, all six of us booked for diner in the hotel and had a choice form the restaurant menu and Christmas menu some of us had starters form the restaurant menu and main course from the Christmas menus or visa versa and nothing was two much trouble for Danny and Christine who served us, Christine entertained us with her balloon modelling expertise. The food was fantastic and our room was a four poster and very spacious. Breakfast was very efficient and Michele the waitress could not have been more helpful, I am quite a fussy breakfast eater but Michele catered for all my needs. I would recommend the Angel and Royal whether it be for business or pleasure all the staff are very friendly including Jane the Manageress.

    « Christmas celebration »

I stay at the hotel most weeks on business with other colleagues. We decided to hold our Christmas bash at the hotel and we didn't regret it. As always the staff looked after us and the food was very good. I wouldn't want to single out any one member of staff for praise as that would be unfair on the others but we would like to take the opportunity to thank them all who served us on the night and through out the year. I would certainly recommend the hotel to anyone who wanted a good a break for both business or pleasure.

    « Surprisingly very good! »

I lived Nr grantham for many years and never thought to stay here even though it's a beautiful old building, after having one too many I booked in being greeted by a lovely lady who was so helpful she checked me into room 105 which was more of a suite than a room and was more than reasonable at £75! I didn't have toothpaste so I rang down and was given a new tube within 5 minutes along with 2 large bottles of water, they were so helpful and accommodating the room had water biscuits and tea making facilities it was extremely warm and cosy I thoroughly enjoyed my stay!! Lovely hotel lovely staff who looked after me I shall stay again!! Hopefully more prepared

    « New Year Break »

Just had a New Year Break at this hotel steeped in history, and full of character. We had a lovely time with friendly and helpful staff nothing too much trouble for them We upgraded our room which was very comfortable having a separate lounge area. The food was delicious especially the New Years Eve's Banquet. The hotel is in the middle of Grantham but does have an excellent car park

    « Wonderful New Year's Break »

What a little gem this is. We stayed for a two night New Year Break and were delighted. The food was wonderful - not easy when catering for such large numbers. Every member of staff we met was helpful, courteous and very friendly. The rooms were very comfortable and the entertainment both evenings was excellent. Excellent value for money and I would highly recommend.

    « Christmas Dinner. »

We visited with a party of 5 for Christmas day dinner. Overall a good meal. Excellent starters, almost excellent main course, disappointing puddings. This review is based on the average opinion of the 5 people.

    « Second visit »

Steeped in history , located on the high street so it's easy for shopping , restaurants and local pubs near by.( Football fans!!!! A number of pubs showing Sky and BT) Shopping centre , out of the hotel turn left and across the main road on the right hand side. The hotel has its own car park to the rear (secured by barrier) Staff very welcoming , the room was large and very clean.

    « Five-star service »

We have just returned from a 4-night Christmas break at The Angel and Royal and thoroughly enjoyed it. We didn't pay for a superior room but ours was excellent - a small hall-way with built-in wardrobes, full-length mirrors, iron and ironing board; a good-sized bathroom with shower over, toiletries, fluffy towels and hair-dryer; a large double bed (not king-sized but more than adequate) with desk, armchairs, wide-screen TV with lots of channels, wi-fi and well-furbished tea and coffee tray. The all-inclusive price was amazing value - 4 nights bed, breakfast and dinner with afternoon tea on the first day, Christmas lunch, even a Christmas stocking. The food was also excellent and the wine list was not overly long but reasonably priced. This is a very old hotel - one of the oldest, if not the oldest in England, so no lift for the less mobile, and sometimes creaking floorboards and corridors looking a little tired in places, but if you want real character and heart, this is the place to go. The staff are super - friendly, helpful, efficient - and seeming to take pleasure in their jobs. Thank you all again!

    « A step back in time »

Centrally placed and a great historic feel. Car park around the v Back is really handy and whilst a short walk to reception it's a bonus. The decor and rooms are a bit reflective of the ancestors of the place but as a stopover room is adequate if not exciting. Breakfast was good and service was fine.

« St Valentines stay in four poster room »

Lovely large four poster room, with lots of mirrors and lighting. Also large well lit bathroom with an excellent make up mirror. It was interesting being in a different part of the Hotel to when we stay at Christmas. We were booked in for a meal in The Kings Restaurant and we were pleasantly surprised and pleased that Jane, the manageress had remembered from our Christmas stay, that we liked an alcove table and had reserved one for us. We are now looking forward to our (?) 4th Christmas stay at this Historic Hotel.

    « Never again..l »

Stayed one night for b&b... Over priced big time... Car parking good, just to the rear of the hotel. Reception was polite but did not provide the usual information that hotels give you like the basic check out time, breakfast time and oh asking if you intend to use the wifi. Room was tidy and cleanish, had a four poster bed which scared the life out of me has it did nothing but creak, I'm not large before you say! Mattress had seen better days and was lumpy and bumpy and dipped to one side. Room dark in daylight, lighting useless. Net curtains hanging on by a thread. Toiletries mmmmm, good job we didn't want to use them. One small bottle of water for two people is not good enough, one person or just don't bother. Breakfast finished at half 9, we got there for about 9.15 ordered a few fresh bits which were alright, but whilst eating that the cold breakfast items where cleared away, I understand breakfast finished at 9.30 but I assumed like all other hotels that it was cooking ends at that time and if your still in the resturent you could still have juice, cereal and pastries. Like I said over priced, it's a £30 hotel...

« nice friendly staff, lovely building but dont go when theres a party »

the staff we found to be very nice and friendly, one receptionist in particular helped us by printing directions to lincoln as our sat nav broke. the room was nice and clean the only faults we had was that there was a party on and we had the room directly above it so we couldnt get to sleep and the room was so hot i didnt sleep well at all!!! we turned all the heaters off, had the windows open and it was still sweltering!! to say i was unhappy was an understatement (its not often we get to have a night away without or children so i was looking forward to a peaceful nights sleep) the breakfast was really nice i had a sausage (really nice) egg and mushrooms, my partner had a bacon bap. however i need my coffee in the morning, a nice coffee, unfortunately the coffee was awful!!! i couldnt drink it and neither could my partner so we had to o to a cafe for a coffee straight from having breakfast. even with the faults though i would stay again, summer might be best so the heating off though.

    « Very cosy »

Got in late (a bit of a hike from the rail station but easy to find in the town centre) and no problem checking in. Stayed here since I had to travel to Nottingham after an evening meeting in London but due to rubbish evening trains service it was better to stop over in Grantham and take a short train ride in the morning. It's an old place so there are creaky stairs to climb but the room is well equipped. Windows could need a bit of TLC, opening and closing was a bit of struggle, it was quite warm. Still it was comfortable and the breakfast was excellent, although if you go for porridge ask to have the syrup supplied separately. It has great ambient feel and I would be happy to stay over here in future.

« Ok but could be a lot better with a bit more attention to detail. »

On the positive side this Hotel is ideally located in the centre of Grantham and the four poster room we stay in was large and comfortable with a very good shower over the bath. The hotel has a very interesting history and it retains much of the character of an old coaching inn. Not a problem for us but people with mobility problems should think very carefully about room locations. The radiator in the room was not working but for us the heated towel rail in the bathroom was more than adequate to heat the whole room. The plastic hooks on the bathroom doors were not very good and twice fell off during the course of our stay. We stayed for dinner on the first night and the food was very good if moderately expensive. A pity the same can not be said about the breakfast service. I look forward to a good full English but by the 3rd day I was down to a few elements that I thought the breakfast chef could not mess up -having rejected hard cremated bacon, disintegrated scrambled eggs and tasteless baked beans. The waiting staff were friendly enough but the lack of a properly cooked breakfast was a big disappointment. There a plenty of good breakfast alternatives in the Town Centre so shame we had paid up front! The free WiFi worked well in the room although the arrangement for obtaining the code was a little quaint. Finally the car park was large and convenient but the directions on the website were useless and we did a few circuits of the town's challenging one way system before finding a way in!

    « Watty's on tour »

Stayed here for wife's birthday with our little boy. Nice hotel but if being picky probably needs a lick of paint here and there. Room was plenty big enough for the 3 of us and kept nice and warm, chimney breast in room and warmed by large log fire in reception. Staff helpful and pleasant, no real faults a nice pleasurable relaxing stay. Will visit again I'm sure, a truly beautiful building. Thumbs up.

« Nice rooms but blunt staff »

This place is right in the middle of town, has a car park a short walk away and I had a lovely room (two actually, as it had its own living room as well as a bedroom). Sadly it wasn't anywhere near as good a stay as I'd hoped. Firstly I arrived quite late and the staff seemed less than impressed and a little blunt - this wasn't limited to reception, but the bar as well. The room was also heated to a ludicrous level, so I got little sleep, despite turning off the three heaters and opening the windows. Surely people can't sleep when its this hot! The wifi was free, but pretty poor for netflix and dropped out in the bar quite often. Lastly the food was pretty average. The menu isn't very expensive, but I wasn't too impressed with the meal and breakfast wasn't great either.

« Nice but a bit past its best »

Stayed here recently just for one night. Check-in staff friendly and efficient. Lots of secured parking at the back of the hotel. Room was pleasant and had everything you need - big TV, coffee/tea, biscuits, iron - but the bathroom looks in need of a makeover. Better lighting would make such a difference, very dingy and unappealing. Shower was hopeless, very powerful, loads of hot water but shower head seemed to be broken and just pointed straight down. It was a very windy night and, as the window catch was broken, I was up at 1am stuffing bits of paper into the window recess to stop it sliding open and blowing a gale through the room. Breakfast very good and served by pleasant, smiling staff. Nice hotel, that just needs a bit of attention to small details and it could be great.

« Pity about Sunday roast dinner »

Sunday dinner was not good, cold food, they had several attempts to put correct it. Next table had same problem and prompty left ( they were locals and said a good carvery was available up the road). Room was good, breakfast good and service good.

« Ok! (Sums it up for me) better places to stay. »

Booked here due to being on a course at the hotel as a venue. First impressions from outside were good, receptionist on arrival was pleasant enough. Room was ok, but bathroom was tight for space. Nice and clean and bed was very comfy! Breakfast was ok. Not as nice as I was expecting. Food during the day was satisfactory. Car parking was excellent! Just to rear. Receptionist on check out was a bit unpleasant not very accommodating really and ended up in me leaving thinking she was a bit rude. Other than that, ok. Would I stay here again? If I had to.

    « Nice Old Inn »

Friendly staff, big rooms and great fine dining. I was told by staff this was the oldest coach house in Grantham. We was told it was haunted which added to the excitement of staying there. The steaks we had were beautiful and not to expensive, with the menu offering a lot of variety. Right in the heart of Grantham, with all the local shops nearby, highly recommended!!

    « One night stay »

Perfect location right in the town. Pubs & resturants close by. Check in was swift & efficient. The room 103 was very nice separate bedroom & sitting area. Bed very comfortable with lovely white linen. Nice size. Bathroom a little dated but functional & lovely white thick towels.... On the downside it was in need of a good clean, the bath panel was dirty it certainly hadn't been cleaned for a long time. When hoovering more care needs to be taken to hoover next to the skirting boards in all the rooms, and the suitcase stand was very dusty. We had a drink in the bar which was nice but the seating was uncomfortable due to poor cushioning....car parking perfect...

« Long Weekend in Grantham »

Excellent hotel, good location, friendly staff, lovely room, just too hot the first night to get a goods nights sleep! There was a good choice of food for breakfast and the waiting staff were very helpful.

    « Warm and Friendly »

One night only. Great welcome by Reception.. Terrific Room, comfy and clean.. Old yes, slightly faded but that added to the real building and the History. Had dinner at night.. Tasty, well prepared and served by a jolly and efficient team. Breakfast was very good and there was plenty of choice and again was served by a very pleasant young man, who seemed pleased to be there. There is an amazing History here, but pointless without the staff and the team that make it work..and they do exactly that. Just go and enjoy and think about all those generations who have been before, and then remember the people who are there now. They are a good team and deserve to be praised. Have a visit and see...

    « Historic treasure »

Chose this as a one night stop over to split a long journey home and we have used Best Western and Tesco points before. Check out the one way system and plan your route to the car park at the rear! Great welcome, lovely room, great service in the restaurant and loved the history of the building! See the pictures. They looked after my wheat intolerance without fuss, too. Would recommend.

    « No Angel here! »

This is a Master class in a web site showing something as it would like to be but is not! This hotel is grubby, run down and depressing both outside and in...Rooms are the same, dark, looking onto a shabby filthy alleyway through dirty windows and old hanging net curtains & drapes, not clean either with someone elses hairs evident on arriving in the bath and floors...UGHH!!.....Breakfast was dire!...staff seemed nice people...shame really.

« Amazing history, interesting building. Good Value »

Amazing history. Look at the narrative on the walls behind reception. Wish I had a little more time rather than read them at breakfast on the way home. Massive room (10). So much character in this hotel. Nice breakfast, great staff. Good for business travellers. Large locked car park behind hotel.

« Excellent in all areas »

This hotel is excellent value for money. When I booked I had not anticipated such a high standard would be offered for the prices. Ok so the large rooms are not "boutique" but the quality of the furnishings and the housekeeping were excellent along with well fitted spotlessly clean bathrooms. The food was also good value for money. If you need a hotel in this area The Angel and Royal is a good choice

    « A lovely building »

This was a lovely old building with loads of character. Our room was very 'average' though, needed updating. The food was very good, dinner and breakfast were excellent, as were all the staff that we met, all very friendly and helpful, a shame that the room was a let down. The beds we had were comfortable but were very narrow for a twin bed, also the shower we couldn't get to stay warm, little things but they let the place down, in fairness we didn't complain as were only staying over night. The carpet on the landing was grubby, had stains, do realise it costs a lot to keep everywhere looking good.
