« Staff couldn't have been more helpful »

Spent a long weekend at this hotel with my car club (Morgan Sports Car Club - Welsh Division). Superb in every way. Plenty of parking. Large. clean and comfortable bedroom. Amazing view of Cardiff Bay from the window. Excellent meals. Staff couldn't have been more helpful.

    « Afternoon tea »

Excellent afternoon tea. Even though the hotel was busy hosting a wedding party the afternoon tea was served in a lovely room. Fresh sandwiches, warm scones and a varied selection of cakes. Good hot tea served in a china teapot. Staff attentive and friendly. Very relaxed and able to stay chatting and eating for as long as we liked. Would recommend.

    « Quality hotel »

Recently stayed at this hotel to attend a wedding including an over night stay. I must say everything was superb from the friendly helpful welcome, the superb location and views, the room and facilities were fantastic and the food beautiful and plentiful. I would highly recommend both a wedding and stay at this outstanding hotel. One minor down side was the lack of bar staff in the lounge bar prior to the wedding when There was a lot of people attending. Well done to all concerned I will return.

« Traditional comfortable very agreeable »

Traditional, comfortable, very agreeable hotel. All of the staff have been pleasant, helpful and welcoming. Everywhere is clean and well maintained. We had the first freezing weather of the year and thankfully this big old building was warm throughout. Highly recommend!

« Great views and very friendly staff - pity about the meals »

We used our Tesco vouchers for this 3 night stay and weren't sure what sort of room we would get, however it was large enough for 2 armchairs and the usual bedroom furniture. It had stunning views and the refurbished bathroom had a very large walk in shower. The bed was very comfortable with soft cotton bed linen. The staff were very helpful and friendly. However, for the price [ £19 - £25 for the main course] the food was disappointing with very little vegetable content. Breakfast was average quality and the hot breakfast was buffet style which quickly became dry. We will probably stay again but will not eat there at lunchtime or in the evening.

« Nice Views and Service, Old + Average Room »

Lovely venue with great views over the city. All of the staff were very friendly and the breakfast was very nice. However the room we stayed in was getting old and tired. The carpets in particular were very threadbare and dirty. Not great when you have an 8 month old crawling around. The rooms were pretty spacious, however the beds were hard and not great. Overall an average trip

    « Stunning »

I could wax lyrical about staff service comfort surroundings room quality etc etc I can boil it down to two words - JUST GO! Oh yes the Welsh breakfast is amazing, unfortunately we didn't get the chance to try the a la carte but should imagine that is of a high quality also.

« Great fun and beautiful grounds. »

Gorgeous hotel with plenty of character. Comfortable beds, large rooms, ground floor come with terraces which are a nice touch. The food was good, as was the breakfast. It's very quirky, the 80's power ballads in the restaurant got a bit draining after a while, the temperature in the communal areas was similar to a tropical greenhouse, there's probably a hole in the ozone dedicated to this place. A colleague and I got charged twice for a bar drink and they seemed to doubt our word when we brought it up. These are all little annoyances that don't really spoil a great, country hotel.

    « Comfortable and relaxing »

My husband and I chose this hotel due to its location being outside Cardiff but close enough to all amenities. On arriving at the hotel you can't miss the amazing view all the way down to Cardiff Bay. The courtyard is pretty to with a fountain running all day. Welcome at reception was warm and we were given a ground floor room called the Duchess room. The room was very spacious and over looked the court yard. The decoration was a little tired in places but not noticeable above the pleasant feel of the room. Bathroom was fine and all the accomodation was spotlessly clean. During our stay we had one evening meal which was really nice. The staff were attentive and excellent food. On our first morning we tried the breakfast menu having scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and eggs benedict. These were nicely cooked and a good start to the day. Unfortunately the only disappointment was the full Welsh breakfast on our second morning. This was very over done or kept warm too long. It was dry, lacking any flavour and frankly unpleasant. We chose not to complain though as overall our stay had been lovely. We will go back there if we travel to Cardiff again without any doubt but will probably not choose the Welsh breakfast next time.

« Fabulous building and accomodation with wonderful views. »

The building is beautiful, it's a true country house and it was a treat to be able to stay there and enjoy it. The views down towards Cardiff were beautiful. We were lucky enough to have a room at the front (#14), with a balcony so could enjoy the view from the room too. There was a wedding going on when we arrived. Once the guests had gone to the marquee there was no sign there was an event going on - I guess the building is so solidly built that the rooms are naturally sound-proofed. We loved our stay there, it was a last minute booking and a real treat. Eating in was more expensive than I thought it would be, food AND drink-wise. However the food was beautifully cooked (and presented). I had a steak that was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and the accompaniments tasted great too. So I'm sure it represents good value, and I didnt feel hard done by. It's just more than I would usually spend on an evening meal! The signage for the entrance is not great, its very easy to drive past the gateway as the hotel itself is not visible from the road and the entrance is just after a bend

Booked a meal for my wife and myself having had a lovely meal and a lively engagement a year prior,,,,,,, on arrival we were told NO TABLE had been reserved??? Yet I personally booked it myself,,,,, we were told to take a seat, then a receptionist returned to say no tables were available, on being adamant that I had booked it, she went to check the book again,,,, only to return to insist I had booked it for a hotel "down the road"??? Which I would not have used as a dog kennel let alone book a meal there,, she must have rang them to book a table for us behind my back to cover their mistake,,,,,, we were badly let down and made to look stupid by an incompetent person,,,,,, my good memories are now wiped out,,,,, thanks alot cretin

« Great views from a quality country house hotel »

My wife and I stayed here for a couple of nights in October and were not disappointed. Car parking was a little difficult when we arrived (Sunday afternoon) but this, I think, was due to an ongoing function. Thereafter parking was easy. Check-in was simple and the reception staff were helpful and efficient throughout our stay. We had a room (10) on the ground floor which was a good size with a large bathroom, plenty of hanging space and storage space for clothes, etc. and a large comfortable bed. We ate in the dining room on both evenings and enjoyed good quality meals on both occasions. The wine list is reasonably priced and there is enough choice to suit most tastes. The dining room has good views over Cardiff so a window table is to be recommended. The location of this hotel is ideal for visitors to Cardiff as the city centre is accessible by bus (no 27) or local train and is about 15/20 minutes away by car.

    « Great weekend stay »

We stayed here for a weekend while we were visiting friends in Cardiff. We had an amazing time. The hotel is very nice with an amazing view over grounds and Cardiff city. The room was nice and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. Very convenient and close to city and train station. We will stay again next time when we will visit our friends.

    « What a Lovely Hotel »

We stayed here in early October. Check in was very easy and we were quickly directed to our room (Countess) on the first floor. This room is really spacious with a lounge/seating area. There is a modern style large four poster bed and the room is very well decorated. There was no fridge in the room, however, we excused this as it was a minor niggle. The panoramic view of the gardens with Cardiff in the background is wonderful. Although the bathroom is down four shallow steps it is not a problem as it has a handrail, and is easily accessible. There are two wash basins, a toilet, roll top bath and separate shower. Breakfast was not piping hot but was plentiful. We dined each night in the Restaurant and although there is not an extensive menu the food was cooked to perfection. My food allergy was not a problem and they adapted all dishes to suit my requirements. Our waiter (Nitesh) was excellent . The train station is quite near to the hotel with free parking and it takes about 10 minutes to the centre of Cardiff. There was a wedding during our stay but there was no noise or inconvenience as it was in a separate part of the hotel. This is one of the best hotels that we have stayed in and we would definitely stay again.

« Beautiful Location, Good Service, Excellent Food »

My husband and I stayed here for a month during the summer. It is not easy for 2 people to live in a hotel room for a month, but this worked out just fine. We stayed in a standard room, which included a huge bathroom, a sitting area in the bay window area, queen bed. We had plenty of room to store our 5 giant suitcases and closet to hang clothes and some drawers to store clothing in. We had a beautiful view of the hotel landscaped grounds and all the way down to the city of Cardiff and even could view the sea. We ate almost all our meals here. Breakfast every day was fast and efficient so we could get to work in the morning, weekends were usually full of event guests (mostly weddings) but no problem especially if we ate early. The chef here is unusually good -- some of the best meals we have had in Wales. Sometimes when we were tired, we just ordered room service which was always cheerfully delivered quickly and efficiently. Loved the dining room captain, Paolo (although I understand he has left the hotel) -- he always was helpful and entertaining. Our room was large, comfortable, always cleaned quickly and efficiently every day. No complaints -- in fact, our housekeeper (young man) was very attentive and helpful to us. Parking was good and spacious. Only during a couple of large weddings did we have trouble finding space. I would have to think hard to find something to complain about. I will note that when we tried to make sure our Best Western points were going to be credited, the woman at the Front Desk had no idea what we were talking about. She didn't even know Best Western. I assume maybe a new employee. We subsequently spoke to the front desk manager who assured us she would take care of us getting credit for our one month stay, but that never happened and we are out the credit for an entire one month's stay. That is disappointing, but nothing else was.

    « Wonderful stay »

Stayed this hotel with my wife. Hotel put us in a room that had just been painted doors. I quickly returned to reception who quickly changed our room. The room was clean and comfortable and had a lovely view over Cardiff. Breakfast a little disappointing only scrambled egg no fried and also bacon was overdone. Overall would recommend to everyone.

    « How a hotel should be »

If you are tired of being a number try staying at this wonderful hotel, the staff are amazing as is the hotel, the views, day or night across Cardiff and the Somerset coast opposite are delightful, miss it at your peril

    « Fabulous location »

First the positives: views great, room excellent, staff friendly and efficient. However breakfast disappointing. First morning the bacon appeared to have been cooked the day before and kept warm, one rasher so tough I couldn't cut it. Interestingly the rashers seem to be folded in half then cooked on one side only. Why on earth would you do that? The black pudding was horribly overcooked - dry and tasteless. The egg was of a soft rubber texture. Sausage was nice. Second morning gave the full Welsh breakfast another chance. Poached egg was good, bacon still folded so almost raw fat on one side and blackened on the other. Black pudding still overcooked. Also, and this is just stingy, it wasn't a black pudding it was half a black pudding. I expected better from a four star hotel. Didn't try the restaurant so can't comment on the evening fare. Overall a very nice place rather let down by the poorly cooked breakfast.

    « Short Break »

We had already booked this hotel when we found out that our neighbour's daughter had her wedding there a few years ago. She said we wouldn't be disappointed and we were not. I can't praise this hotel highly enough. The building is imposing, the gardens gorgeous and the views right down to the Bay are stunning. We had a garden view room so were able to make the most of the view. (Room 31) The room was quite big with two armchairs which is always welcome. The modern bathroom was fantastic. The bed was comfortable, large wall mounted TV and the room very clean. We had two evening meals at the hotel which were just superb. Compliments to the Chef! All the staff were very friendly, helpful and professional. During our stay we visited St Fagans where you can see reconstructed villages and the original castle. It was so interesting, we were there six hours and didn't see everything. £5 car park and free entry to the site!! To visit Cardiff Bay or the shops there is a rail station a few minutes drive from the hotel. Free parking, frequent train service into Cardiff and change onto small branch line for the Bay. (£5.10 pp return to the Bay). All in all a great three days.

    « Surprising »

I tend to stay in the more modern chain hotels where all the rooms look the same I know that it's a Best Western but what a surprise. The room was spacious staff very friendly and the food was excellent my only concern was that it was a bit limited. Having said that I was there for 2 nights and the meals were well cooked and we'll presented A rather pleasant surprise and the views over Cardiff were superb

« Anniversary meal for family and friends »

We had a brilliant time yesterday at the New House. We hired the Georgian room for our meal of 22 people. We were looked after so well and it felt so relaxing and we weren't rushed at all. We had drinks out on the terrace in the sunshine and went back there after our meal. The children played outside so they had a great time too. The food was delicious and everyone commented on how lovely the food was. My son enjoyed the red mullet and my husband loved his lamb. The staff were all brilliant and we have had great communication from booking up until the day and on the day itself. Thank you again for making our day so special.

    « Pleasant »

One of the better Best Western Hotels, the location is idilic and has views of the Welsh valleys with Millennium Stadium in the distance. a refurb of the bar area did dampen things a little otherwise this would have been excellent, good food , great setting large airy rooms. Will he here again.

« Ideal place to have a group lunchtime meal »

!5 Members of our Church went to the New House and took advantage of their special lunchtime meal offer.2 courses cost £12.95 and 3 courses £16.95. The price includes a 125ml. glass of wine or half a pint of beer or larger or tea or coffee. We had let the restaurant know of our menu choices beforehand which ensured that we did not have to wait long to all have our meals at the same time. The menu had various choices available for the starters, main meals and dessert. Everything was served very efficiently and all the meals were cooked to perfection. We even had hot bread rolls served with proper butter. I can thoroughly recommend both the venue and the food.

    « Family visit »

Stayed for two nights late August. Great location and stunning views towards Cardiff. Room with balcony ideal. Staff very friendly and efficient including housekeeping. Even small menu change would have been good. Cold plates at breakfast and a choice of eggs would have improved this part of the day. Would stay again.

« beautiful room, lovely views »

stayed here last Saturday and the room was gorgeous, The views from the room over Cardiff and the Bristol Chanel were breathtaking. We spent the evening sitting outside the room just taking it all in. Loved it.

    « Super views »

This is a very nice hotel, traditional and welcoming with a nice bar and lounge area next to the restaurant. The really impressive thing here though are the views, it is located on a hill overlooking the City. You can see all the way to the English coast at Weston Super Mare, overlooking the whole of Cardiff bay and the islands in the Bristol channel. Rooms at the front of the property have the view,

    « Wedding Night »

Fabulous place. Four poster bed, huge bedroom. Excellent staff and service. The hotal is set in its own grounds with fabulous views over looking the whole of Cardiff! Of all the hotels in Cardiff this has to be the best of them

    « Wedding party »

We had our daughter wedding breakfast in August 2016 what a great place. The staff were fantastic, the marquee stood up to the rain which did not spoil the day. Everything was perfect. The package on offer includes the bridal suite makes the start to the happy couple. Thank you Kath for all your help.

    « Superb stay »

We booked at the last minute and arrived late evening. It was a wonderful treat to drive in the grounds and see the most beautiful hotel and grounds. We had a fabulous room complete with a four post bed, chaise lounge and loads of space. Dinner in the restaurant was fantastic with the chef catering to my daughter's vegan diet. The staff are excellent. Highly recommend a visit to this stately old home

    « Still a great hotel »

We stayed here as complimentary guests & would like to thank Ollie for staying true to his word. The gentleman who was running the bar & restaurant service (20th August) was a real professional who was extremely polite & attentive. The receptionist is always really efficient & an excellent front of house representative of the company. The Countess suite has been redecorated. The hotel is always very clean & the biggest selling point of this hotel is the exterior of the hotel, the grounds & the outstanding views across Cardiff & the Channel. The restaurant starters were really good, the main was fine, but please work on the dessert & breakfast quality, as this could be improved (the desserts appeared to be frozen Brakes products (correct me if I am wrong) and the breakfast was overcooked). I would suggest making use of the many great quality welsh local suppliers & going down a modern welsh ingredient route regarding your menus (but this is merely my suggestion, as in my opinion you have a great premises & should be singing & dancing the best of Wales with food, drink, views & building). Overall this hotel is great & I would recommend to all. We will be rebooking every wedding anniversary & we look forward to the next visit. Many thanks Ollie, Mr & Mrs Hill

« stunning setting for this stately home hotel »

i stayed here recently as attending a wedding at the hotel. The scenery was spectacular and you had a view right across Cardiff bay.The hotel is set in its own grounds and has ample seating at restaurant, terraces and bars. Room was spacious and well equipped, bath robe and toiletries supplied which was nice. Food was excellent at the wedding where we had a full three course meal and an evening buffet. Breakfast was busy but still had good choice available. Will definitely stay again if i am in the area. Wifi available but had to keep logging in which was annoying and not as other best western hotels. Good parking close by. Lots of steps and slopes do check with reception if they have accessible rooms available.

« Beatutiful retreat just North of the city »

Spacious rooms and enormous comfy bed. Staff very helpful. This hotel is easy to reach from M4 just north of Cardiff on the Caerphilly mountain road but in lovely quiet country surroundings with views down over to the channel and the Somerset shore. We sat outside both in the evening and after breakfast just soaking up the luxury of the hotel and its views. Nice gardens too.

    « I want to live here! »

Cannot rate this hotel highly enough. We are touring Britain and booking online as we go. we have stayed in some places that definitely didnt live up to their profiles but nothing prepared us for the stunning views and magnificent presentation of this place when we pulled in! I had explained that my husband was fed up lugging cases up high stairs and we had very accommodatingly been given a magnificent room on the ground floor with beautiful decor a big bay window and a huge bathroom just they way I would decorate it! We usually go out to dinner in a new place to explore the town but didnt want to.leave here! We had a window table overlooking the extensive views and dinner was superb! I was delighted to find roast beef and Yorkshire pudding on the menu as I have wanted this since arriving back in UK Fed up with fancy cooking! The sticky toffee pudding was FANTASTIC!!! Try it! Huge compliments to the friendly and attentive waiter who is an asset to the staff. We really wanted to extend our stay but have commitments elsewhere otherwise would spend much longer here LOVED IT!!

« Stunning venue for wedding »

Stayed here for a friend's wedding and decided to travel up the day before to avoid any traffic problems which proved to be a bonus. On arrival we went to our room but found it to be located next to the patio which when the windows were open we could heard even the quietest conversations and also felt that we were not alone. We went to reception and asked if we could be moved and the very helpful gent found us another room immediately and moved us to it. It gave us a great view over Cardiff bay from the little terrace. The only minor quilble was that the room was quite dark but i'm sure that more light could be requested. My wife has a serious food allergy and we had informed the hotel of it before hand and during the wedding her food was sorted out perfectly which contributed to our enjoyment.

    « Peaceful hotel »

Stopped here for one night, whilst on business in Cardiff. The hotel looks lovely from the outside - an ideal location for weddings. It's set was back from a main road, with great views across to Cardiff/the sea. Inside, the hotel feels a little dated. My room was large and had a newly refurbished shower room, but the decor (whilst looking quite new) was quite old-fashioned/dated. If you want traditional, then this hotel will suit you, i.e. it's not a boutique hotel. I had dinner in the bar and, whilst this was served promptly and tasted good, I felt £15+ pounds for a burger and chips was a little steep.

« Shockingly expensive for drinks »

My sister got married here last year and to be fair the hotel and staff were great and it is the perfect wedding venue. However we recently attended a wedding here and although we remember from last year it was a tad expensive for drinks we were left in utter shock this year when my husband went to purchase a pint of lemonade & squash only to be charged £3.80 for it! Now granted drink prices can vary what I was mightily annoyed about was the fact the bartender poured the lemonade out of a bottle that was marked up at 99p and it was not even kept in the fridge so was therefore not cold and then was charged £3.80 for the privilege. My husband had decided not to drink and when he came back to the table I thought he would need to purchase another drink to get over the shock. The views are beautiful and as I say a perfect wedding venue but this was a little naughty. Have also been previously for afternoon tea and was left disappointed on that occasion too have been for many afternoon teas but this one was probably the most disappointing especially when just over the mountain there is a golf course who offer afternoon tea for half the price and better quality. Scones were awful and we were unable to eat them. Shame really as the setting for this hotel is absolutely stunning and staff can be super friendly. This place has the potential to be 5 star and it wouldn't need a lot of work either....

« Excellent country hotel in superb location »

My wife and I were allocated the "Countess" room which was immaculate and had great views of Cardiff and the Severn Estuary. Breakfast was epic. The Full Welsh kept us going until evening! Very convenient for Cardiff and Caerphilly. Fairly close to motorway which. But it can't be seen or heard. Plenty of car parking and good WiFi. What's not to like?

    « A real gem! »

Yes the hotel is a little further out of the city centre than most however it is an amazing place to stay - well worth the taxi ride to experience the hotel's personal, relaxed service in very comfortable, warm surroundings. The large bedroom I was in had great views of the countryside and in the distance Cardiff city centre. Dinner in the restaurant was excellent as was breakfast. Thoroughly recommended.

    « Tea on 16 July »

Two of us had tea on 16 July to celebrate my birthday. We could not sit in the lounge because there was a wedding that day. We were put in the restaurant by the kitchen and not even in the window. I had to ask what the scones were. They did not even look like scones and were hard, crunchy and stale. Tasted about a month old. Not like previous times when I have had tea there. Would definitely not be going there again.

    « Thank you »

Stayed for my niece's wedding and had a wonderful stay. Staff were excellent . Lovely room. Very clean and great breakfast. But best of all they put on a wonderful wedding. Nothing was to much bother. Thank you all

    « First Class Stay »

We chose this hotel as it was far enough from the city centre for peace and quiet but close enough to enjoy all that Cardiff has to offer. On arrival we were greeted with a smile from a very helpful receptionist who gave us our room key, when we got to our room it was at the back of the hotel with a view of the kitchen roof. We asked to change our room and was given another with a great view of the city and the bay. The room was spacious, well decorated, very comfortable and extremely clean, with a good size bathroom. Breakfast was very good with a good choice of items to keep everyone happy, we ate in the restaurant on one evening and the food was excellent. The staff in all departments were friendly and very helpful. We spent 4 lovely nights there and was sad to leave, if we go back to Cardiff this will be the place we will stay.

    « Lovely Hotel »

I took four rooms for family this past Thursday. Checkin was great and the male receptionist very friendly and courteous, a credit to the hotel. The bedrooms were excellent , the wo do good and plenty of hot water. There was a wedding taking place and whilst I slepted through all the noise but my wife didn't and some guests did make a lot of noise when trying to find their bedrooms which was not the hotels fault. Breakfast was adequate. Overall an excellent stay and I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

« Pleasant country hotel with great views »

Warm welcome received on arrival, but despite having a Best Western Diamond Card and showing it at reception there was no ?Recognition Gift,' so perhaps they don't fully participate in the Rewards programme. Our room (36) was on the top floor with great views overlooking Cardiff and the sea beyond. It was clean, comfortable and well appointed, and consisted of three separate areas, the bedroom which was on a raised platform, a separate seating area leading to an outside roof area, and finally a bathroom with a sloping ceiling above the bath which could be a bit of a head banging experience. Very quiet at night ensuring an excellent nights sleep. They have a number of comfortable lounges in which to relax or have a drink. Obviously a popular hotel based on the number of non-residents attending for a meal or a cream tea. Breakfast was buffet style with the usual full Welsh breakfast, and a few items for vegetarians, all overseen by friendly and helpful staff. Despite advertising a computer for the use of guests in their room information folder, this no longer exists. The one strange thing was that the TV needed to be retuned each day to get the full range of digital channels, otherwise it defaulted back to pre-digital channels. They have a large car park, and the Cardiff park and ride is just a short drive away. Would certainly recommend the hotel, but no advantage for B/W Reward members.

« Lovely hotel, beautiful gardens »

We stayed twice at the beautiful New House Country Hotel as we flew in to Cardiff and left from Cardiff, It is on many acres of well manicured land. Beautiful flowers every where. Birds singing, very peaceful. Beautiful view of Cardiff bay in the distance. Rooms very large with French doors to the outside patio with chairs to sit on and a table. Not modern but classy. Heated towel racks in large bathroom. Restaurant very good, Wonderful food and great complimentary breakfast. Dining in very nice dining room or in lounge. Very off the beaten path but Sainsbury not very far away if you needed anything. Beds very comfortable. Staff exceptional. I would love to go back and stay several days. Restaurant open to public. Conservatory right behind and part of hotel was having a function.

Arriving at this hotel was looking like a lovely peaceful stay for 2 nights in a beautiful setting and our room was amazing on walking in.....BUT we didn't sleep either night due to wedding on the first night, which was a Thursday and a party on the Friday night where the party goers carried on until 4 o clock in the morning both outside on the front lawn where our room looked over and in the Bar which our room was above.!!!!!! Also our room - The Baroness room was above a room with the creakiest floor boards ever and the first night the guests in that room were up all night wandering about until the early hours. We wanted a quiet peaceful 2 nights away which is why this hotel looked perfect,so very disappointed. Will not be returning. Perhaps people expecting, like us a quiet country retreat, should be advised that noise from functions should be expected during their stay, and get one of your staff to stay a night in the Baroness room to hear for themselves SO DISAPPOINTED!!!!

    « Beautiful surroundings »

Lovely hotel in beautiful surroundings, food was good and staff were helpful. Rooms were big but bed was only a standard double whereas a king size would have suited the size of the room better. Lovely buffet breakfast in the morning.

    « Good quality »

Attended business event, clean room, decent cooked breakfast and facilities, both dinner and the conference provision were high quality. Slightly out of the way in terms of access, no real public transport option is viable. Suspect its a wedding venue at weekends. Service good throughout.

    « Nice enough »

Difficult to rate, the place was pleasant, nice istoric house with a modern extension/wing. It was clean and the staff were helpful and competent. It's difficult because there was a wedding on, it appears to be a wedding reception based business for Cardiff area. The wedding guests were no trouble, but not what we were expecting, and we were not advised by the hotel, if we had been I may have changed plans. I think that's why I feel a little let down, especially as we were not there at the weekend. Wifi was via a cloud system you have to register for. I read like I'm miserable but don't think I am.

« On the edge of Fforest Fawr »

The hotel is magnificently located overlooking Cardiff with lovely grounds surrounding this historic 18c house. The place is a little tricky to find as I was looking for a Best Western sign and signage is very discrete. Staff were pleasant. There is no air conditioning or lifts but windows open and porterage is available. The flushing system in our room was a bit challenging as you had to 'pump' the handle to flush. TV wasn't working. The room was spacious and clean with a large toilet. On the whole, recommended.

Made a late late booking ( Thurs) before visiting Cardiff on Saturday. Very efficient online booking process with no hassles at all. After nearly missing the entrance ( well hidden) we were greeted by the very friendly receptionist. She explained everything we needed to know and showed us to our double room (27). the room overlooked the main entrance and with views over Cardiff made the room a perfect spot to people watch as well as look at Cardiff from afar. The room & bathroom were well equipped to a very good standard, clean and airy. the fan in the bathroom did its job very efficiently clearing the steam from the powerful shower very quickly. The Night Porter was particularly accommodating when we returned late from the Rod Stewart concert (0115). He welcomed us as if we had been there a week !! The bed was extremely comfortable , the tea & coffee making facilities adequate ( no biscuits !!) and the breakfast in the morning was also very good with a good selection of cereals and hot food available. Checkout was very quick & easy. Overall the stay was too short but we will be back

« Great position with view to Cardiffp »

Business trip, first time stay, room all ok, restaurant food is good, overall a nice place to stay set in lovely park land with stunning views. Car park is a fair walk from reception so brolly needed if it's raining! Overall , very pleasant . Would I stay again? Most certainly . WiFi is a bit iffy but all Hotels are making this better now, so hopefully next time I stay it will be faster.

    « Over night stay »

What a lovely find with this hotel is. It is just outside Cardiff but in a beautiful country setting with great views over Cardiff and the Bay. The room was extremely comfortable and the staff very friendly.

    « Great choice »

A perfect choice if you want a country hotel that is close to Cardiff and the M4, It has a perfect location on a hill overlooking fields and the city in the distance, the hotel has an old world charm with excellent friendly staff. We were lucky to have a large room at the front of the hotel overlooking the fields, bedroom had a 4 poster bed and an excellent bathroom. You can see why this is a perfect and popular choice for weddings and events.Even though a wedding was going on while we were there it was very quiet and the service and food in the restaurant was good. This hotel will certainly be our base for future visits to this area.

    « Just one night »

We stayed here for just one night as we were visiting family and wanted to have a drink. For some reason booking on line hit a wall, but when I phoned to check my booking was quickly and efficiently sorted. At reception we were promptly dealt with and directed to our room, with an offer to carry our bag. Our room was large and nicely decorated in an old style.the most striking thing was the view out of the French doors. The whole of Cardiff was laid out in front with Somerset coast in the distance. There were even chairs placed on a small patio outside. Unfortunately we could not stop and enjoy the view. We had invited our family to join us for breakfast. A table hadn't been set for us but this was quickly sorted. Our orders were taken quickly, nice coffee, fresh juice, warm fresh toast and a freshly cooked breakfast served in a nice room by friendly staff - what more could you want. The hotel was very quiet with not many guests. We have already booked a room for Christmas and are looking forward to it. WARNING - be extremely careful when driving out of the hotel onto Thornhill Rd.

« Lovely Hotel spoilt by wedding guests »

Lovely hotel, beautiful location, excellent service, gorgeous room. Such a shame that it was spoilt by rowdy wedding guests. Our room was at the front of the hotel, with stunning views but unfortunately a number of guests from the wedding all congregated outside our room on the patio below and we got no sleep until well after 2am. Weddings seem to take priority and the hotel need to remember that there are other guests staying too. Perhaps when taking a booking they should advise guests that there is a wedding and that it could get rowdy. It really spoilt what was meant to be a wonderful weekend.

    « Beautiful, quiet hotel »

The main part of the hotel was beautiful with an old world look. I was lucky enough to stay in the front bedroom overlooking the fields towards the city, the Squire room (the Baroness is the other one). The bathroom was large and there was a safe, iron and hair dryer. My room had two chairs facing out the Georgian windows (with lovely shutters) and a dressing table/desk. The bed was big and very comfortable. I ate at the restaurant, Sequoias, and the food was delicious, they were slow to take my order (20 minutes after he had acknowledged I was ready to order) but the food was out quickly. The hotel staff was friendly and quick.

« Good size room and lovely setting. »

Really lovely setting in beautiful grounds. This is a lovely old hotel. My room was large, clean and very comfortable, with a huge ensuite. The breakfast was good and cooked to order with waitress service. The bed was really comfortable and I had a great nights sleep.

    « Disappointed »

We stayed one Friday night in April. Looking forward to stay as reviews were good and it was my husband's birthday. Minor irritating mistakes. I had booked a twin room way in advance but we were assigned a king room. The bed was uncomfortable. I requested the stay be credited to my Best Western account and it never got done. Did not get my newspaper. The cost of the room, which was not cheap, did not include breakfast. Wedding party had taken over many of the communal rooms. The view the next morning (raining when we arrived) was amazing. The room was spacious and clean. Be sure to ask for a room at the front of the hotel with a view. I cannot recall if Wifi was in-room or in public rooms only.

    « Very nice »

Stayed 4 one night during the week... very nice spacious room... separate seating room with sofa and 2 armchairs and separate bedroom... big bathroom with jacuzee bath and separate shower... friendly reception and brakfast ok... Thakn you...

« Excellent room and great views of Cardiff »

We had a superior room which turned out to to be a suite on the ground floor called the ?Duchess' room. It was very large with comfortable furnishings and a large bathroom. The views from this hotel are outstanding as we looked over the whole of Cardiff Bay. Having mobility problems, we found that carrying our cases from the car was very difficult only to be told that we could park directly outside ?like a lot of our guests? by the rather unhelpful receptionist. Signs for disabled car drivers would be useful. However, the access to the hotel itself was via ramps and was mainly flat. Like a lot of large hotels, the service was rather impersonal and ?by the book' but you cannot fault the views.

    « Simply Wonderful Stay »

From the second we arrived in the large car park (with disabled spaces) we could see the amazing views over Cardiff and Cardiff Bay. Then we noticed the beautiful historic hotel itself and were very impressed. The location was ideal for business (very close to the M4), exploring the local attractions or sightseeing. There was a disabled ramp to reception and all the staff were pleasant and professional. The interior has kept the vintage features while adding modern touches which work well. There was plenty of choice for a bar lunch and the home-made soups were wonderful. We stayed for two nights and had the Duchess room with a beautiful view of the gardens. The room itself was huge, had excellent lighting and beautifully appointed. It had a ?duck? theme to the three pictures and had lots of ducks on the headboard. There was a table, dressing table and chair, sofa and coffee table. The bathroom was large, immaculate, modern and was well lit. The bath even had grab handles. The toiletries were of good quality. My only issue is that the LOO PAPER WAS VERY THIN ? the worst we had at any hotel on our holiday! We had trouble logging on to the free wifi but one phone call to reception brought Lewis to help us. He rebooted the server close to the room and all was well. The food at dinner was imaginative, beautifully cooked and well presented. Breakfast was a DIY buffet but with other items cooked to order, and served by waiters. I can recommend the porridge and eggs Benedict!

    « Expected better »

Did not stay at the hotel but dined in the restaurant for a family celebration in a party of 13. On arrival the outside all looked fine, with fantastic views over Cardiff and across the channel. went inside and sat in one of the lounges noticed the ornamental coving and the ceiling was very water damaged and brown. Went through for meal and was sat next to a window with a couple of mm gap in it was fairly cold and radiator switched off. The curtains were thread bare and there was food on the floor in the window area with a good few months fluff in the radiator. The meal came stater was fine, mains arrived with a bit of a mix up but got sorted sweets arrived ok went for a coffee in another lounge where the seating was quite thread bare even worse stained coving which looked like it was growing something on it and the tables were quite damaged. When the bill came it was about £60 pounds more than it should have been with 8 steaks on it not the 6 we had ordered, The wine was £20 for bottle 1 and bottle 2 was £ 22 for the same bottle just stuff like this put a bit a dampener on the evening. Issues were resolved with the bill as I took it to reception but was not the point its the 3rd time I've have visited this hotel in the last 10 years and probably the last. Superficially a beautiful venue but on closer inspection the hotel has become worn out and in need of a lot a love, Staff were excellent and very helpful.

    « Nice hotel »

Recently stayed here for 2 nights. Nice location and very good views. Bar and restaurant very good, particularly good staff. Food and beer very good. Room was good though dimly lit. Bathroom was a little tired but perfectly functional. Nice little patio area as well. This is a great place to stay if a little tired in places, would stay again

    « Best friends wedding »

I had a wedding to attend to at this hotel so we thought we would also book in to stay the night. When you drive into the car park you can instantly see the amazing views of all of Cardiff and Cardiff bay, behind the acres and acres of land. The hotel itself is beautiful and it is all very vintage inside, but not too overpowering. The room we had was a suite and we could see all the views from our bedroom, only downfall is, one of the bay windows are directly opposite next doors bay windows so we could see into their room too. We ordered room service at 12:30am and they were very efficient and came to our room. All in all a beautiful hotel and I would definetly return.

    « Excellent place »

One of the best hotel in Cardiff, highly recommend if you visit Cardiff or looking for relax :) Great view, friendly staff and very comfortable room with nice bathroom size. The staff is very professional and very helpful. Definetly will be back again :) Thank you very much for great time

    « Conveniently close to the M4 »

I do like this place but, despite some upgrading, it looks a little tired now. I love the size of the rooms and the quality of the toiletries, bathroom fittings etc are first class usually (although I had a toilet seat that was loose). It is good for business travellers and plenty of room as family rooms too. I was disappointed in the scrambled egg in the morning which was produced out of the microwave; on previous visits there was a breakfast buffet and the scrambled egg was one of the best ever. My evening meal of chicken with pasta was good, but I couldn't eat it all - portion sizes are large. Personally in this day and age, I would prefer more manageable portions as research has proved that the more you put on a plate the more people will eat! This was a stopping off point for me on a business trip into south Wales, and it is very, very close to the M4 so I shall definitely stay again.

« Peaceful and set in wonderful scenic surrounding »

Very friendly staff and always eager to assist with a smile on their face. The food was excellent as was the spacious rooms which were very clean and well maintained throughout our stay. The scenery from the bedroom window provided a wonderful vista of Cardiff Bay and was made better by the placement of two chairs just outside with easy access via the french door in the bedroom. I would highly recommend this hotel to both friends and relatives

    « Business Or Leisure »

Very pleasant hotel with good facilities, set in the countryside with a great view of Cardiff Bay. The staff, pleasant and professional, location ideal for business or exploring the local attractions and site seeing. It's a yes from me. Breakfast is high quality but could do with more sausages being available for the hungry traveller.

    « Beautiful quiet property »

We arrived after a very long day of touring and were meet by sheer perfection. I love the little bar area and the front desk printed me off a copy of the history of the old manor house. What a gorgeous location and breath taking view. We reserved for dinner and went to check out our room. It was simply the best. Very charming room and beautiful view of gardens. Dinner that evening was delicious and charming. We met a lovely Welsh couple and had a great chat. The waiter was excellent. The next morning our full Welsh Breakfast was the best and the service again exceeded our expectations. Lots of great parking. 10/10 for us??

    « Perfecton »

The reception in the marquee and rooms in the hotel were booked for my son`s wedding on the last day of April.. From the moment the couple and guests arrived, the staff were amazing. The views and grounds were wonderful. The rooms were large and comfortable. The wedding meal and the breakfast was first class. They have staff to be proud of.

    « business dinner »

a colleague was staying at the new house for the 3rd time and was speaking about his stay in glowing terms so we decided to try the restaurant - on my arrival we were greeted by the bar manager who served us with a few gin and tonics (i could i say no) service was prompt and friendly - the restaurant was very quiet with possibly just 3 other tables being occupied - the car park was full so i assume they had a function with other dining area being used . our waitress was quite chatty and took our order for food and wine with a smile on her face -this always helps to enjoy the food to come. starters we had were pate and this was served promptly followed by lamb shank and my colleague had sirloin steak - both were excellent and served piping hot which is how food should be - we had ordered a bottle of house wine and were very pleased with our choice - cheese board to finish with coffee - and a port to compliment the cheese - excellent meal -very good service and top marks . when my colleague has a return stay at the hotel i will look forward to suggesting that we eat at the New House again.

    « Great Wedding »

Stayed in this place a few times before getting married there. Great period features. Fab food clean rooms, great staff every time ! comfy beds 15 mins away from the centre of Cardiff. Great for a gig or tour hotel away from the city centre !

    « Lovely place »

Stayed here for a night for a conference and loved it. Comfortable room, friendly staff, great breakfast - and the view over Cardiff, both at night and during the day, is absolutely stunning. Recommended, and will come back for fun not work.

« Great place for afternoon tea! »

Stunning views over Cardiff made our afternoon tea a memorable experience. Staff were most attentive and friendly. Lovely food, relaxing atmosphere. Enjoyed the whole experience ; super BIrthday gift! Would definitely go back!

    « 10 Wedding Anniversary »

10 years on since having our wedding reception hers, this hotel is still one of the best in Cardiff. The old Georgian building blends itself to being a great hotel. Views are wonderful from the front lawn over the valley and onto Cardiff Bay. The restaurant, staff and food is excellent with service formal but not starched Some of the furnishings are slightly fading/worn but in comparison to the use it gets still acceptable. Great for couples who want service in a relaxed hotel but with atmosphere

    « Made business - pleasure »

I came to this hotel on business, had a room booked and a meeting room for in the morning. Lovely hotel with a view overlooking Cardiff and the bay! My room was gorgeous, and very spacious. It was also super clean - I am a clean freak and generally find something not up to my standard, but not here. The main thing that made my stay so nice though was the customer service. The woman on reception literally could not do enough for you (and I should know as I asked about a thousand questions)!

    « What a view ! »

Great location up in the hills above Cardiff. Nicely presented, lovely grounds and stunning views of Cardiff. Room was great, very large, nicely appointed and clean. Breakfast was good, bar was well stocked and staff were very good.

    « Great Hotel »

Stayed for two nights hotel is being repainted but did not spoil our stay. It has made the hotel more attractive. The area is very quiet and the views over Cardiff are worth going to see. Will gladly return in future.

« Week end in Wales »

We enjoyed our stay in the New House Country Hotel with its excellent views of Cardiff and superb accommodation and faculties'.The service and quality plus presentation of the food in the restaurant was also excellent.

    « Very nice. »

My husband and I stayed in August for his 45th birthday, and what a lovely trip it was. Plush vintage hotel with traditional but not out dated decor. All of the staff were very welcoming and advised us on the local area. Would definitely stay again.

« Plush but not too pricey »

Stayed for one night in Lewis room. This room has a shower en-suite but no bath. I would suggest that you state at the time of booking if you have a preference for shower or bath room. As I booked via the internet this was not possible. Lewis is a very spacious and comfortable room. It overlooks the grounds and marquee to the west of the building. From the front of the hotel there are spectacular views over Cardiff and the bay. It would be worth having a room at the front just for this reason. The hotel decor maintains the style and ambience of an old country house. Very nice. Breakfast was buffet style for the cold offerings and table service for cooked. I had the cockles and lava bread with bacon and poached egg. I couldn't fault it. We paid £75 pounds for one night B&B. This was a special offer and well worth the money.

« Pure class, old fashioned values and quaintness, fantastic place to sit, drink and eat »

A SPECIAL place, one to take your family or best friends or business contacts to. Jaw dropping views making Cardiff look like California. Tranquil, Elegant, Food quality first class. Yes, it costs a little higher than your run of the mill pub but as the L'Orial tv ad says "Because you're worth it!". Have zero hesitation - you will love it.

« Stunning Hotel with Stunning Views »

Where to begin with this hotel - it was perfect! All staff we encountered were friendly and courteous, nothing was too much trouble for us - including allowing a non hotel staying friend of ours to leave their car in the car park. We were in room 21 which was large in size with a Super Kingsize bed (made up of 2 single beds), a sofa, table and chairs, a large bathroom, a balcony and some of the best views over Cardiff possible. The bed was comfortable with us both getting amazing nights sleep with no noise heard from other guests or the roads in the distance. Despite being a little way out of Cardiff, we could wholeheartedly recommend this hotel and will return if we stay near Cardiff again.

« Best Western PLUS New House Country Hotel »

Staying here was a great experience, the room was excellent, (the marquis). The staff oozed professionalism, a special mention for the restaurant, for its staff who were engaging and knowledgeable and its food which was divine. In short, do not miss this gem of a hotel.

« Lovely country house overlooking Cadiff »

A distance from Cardiff, had great time in a beautiful hotel seeing the things in this region of Wales. We went in January and the lounge had a great fire going. Breakfast of lava bread and cockles with bacon and egg was amazing. Will return again.

« Sunday Lunch for sure! »

I booked a family table to celebrate my brother's 60th birthday. I wanted a nice setting and high quality food. Previously have had their caterers for a wedding and a wake with high recommendations. We were dealt with professionally and excellently. The food was timely and high quality. Extremely good value for money!

    « Sunday lunch »

A trip back to the 70s. Quant and a little old fashioned. A grade 2listed building with plenty of character. Staff very welcoming. Fare was well cooked and presented and no rush our part lovely lounge for coffee. Apparently they do murder mystery w/e and I will certainly look to attending one for the whole ambience. Well worth the visit.

    « Pleased »

This hotel was a surprise a good one. Had to go to Cardiff at short notice had no idea about hotels in the area. My husband found this very nice one. Room bright and clean, food was good and staff very friendly and helpful. If I was in the area again would not mind staying here. Plenty of parking also Lisvane train station about 5 minutes away and free to park. Trains run at about every 15 mins. 4 stops to Cardiff Central

    « A one Night Stop »

Stayed at the New House Country Hotel for one night (7th Jan 2016) 3 people travelling Drove up to Cardiff on a wet and dismal day to the hotel with my partner and friend who had an appointment at a Cardiff hospital. We arrived in the dark so not much to see other than the night lights of Cardiff laid out like a carpet below the hotel. We were warmly welcomed and given our room keys so straight to our rooms which were large airy and with good views over the front of the hotel. The room that we were in No25 was well maintained and decorated with good views over the front of the hotel and views of Cardiff in the distance. After freshening ourselves up we all decided to go to the Bar for a drink before dinner, the bar was nicely laid out with soft settee's and arm chairs with a large log fire in the fireplace, unfortunately not alight. After our drinks we were chose from the menu for our evening meal, a fair menu but not much choice available, only 4 items for each course. After we had made our choices we were shown into the dining area where we were served with our meals. Two of us opting for the Melon Fan to start my partner decided to forgo a starter, for the main course two of us chose the Sirloin Steak and my partner opting for the Vegetarian option of Salad, The Steaks were of the finest quality, cooked to perfection with a choice of Sauces to accompany them, my partner also enjoyed her Salad option, to follow we had cheesecake to finish, followed by coffee. After our meals we decided to have an early night so retired to our rooms and bed, although the bed in our room (No25) was reasonably comfortable, I have never slept on a bed as hard as that before. The following morning after showering in the large Bathroom within the room, we decided to go down to Breakfast where the dining room was laid out ready for guests, the choice available was more comprehensive than the evening meal menu, served quickly and efficiently, after we paid our bills then left to make our way into Cardiff city. The hotel is Clean and looks well maintained, the staff that we met were all very friendly and helpful, and the view from the front of the hotel is well worth looking at with views all over Cardiff City and the Sea beyond. The one thing that did seem slightly odd was the fact that in our whole time there, from 18-30 through to 09-00 we did not see any other guests, it may well have been that we were the only people staying at the hotel that night, but other than the staff we did not meet or see another sole. Would we stay there again? without a doubt, the location was good, the hotel was clean and warm, and from what we saw, well maintained.

    « Tidings of joy »

I stayed here over Christmas whilst visiting my family and had such a comfortable time. My room was enormous with fabulous views right down to Cardiff bay. Breakfasts were leisurely and sufficient. My only criticism was that the wi-fi was very temperamental but I was assured that this was a temporary hitch and the engineers would be calling after Christmas.. All staff were efficient, welcoming and friendly.

« Lovely country hotel close to Cardiff »

A quiet, comfortable, traditional and well priced hotel on the outskirts of Cardiff in a lovely country setting. The bedroom (queen) was very spacious with a huge bathroom. Easy access from the M4, to Central Cardiff and into the Welsh countryside to the north.

    « Great Building & View »

Beautiful grade II listed building with great views over Cardiff. We stayed for two nights but only ate in the restaurant on one of them. The food was good which was reflected in restaurant prices but the menu was limited. Breakfast was as you'd expect, nothing more than that. Staff friendly & helpful although front of house staff were a little inexperienced. Overall, a good stay, with hotel, bed & breakfast being good value.

    « Shambles »

We booked the hotel several days before. When we turned up we were booked in and allocated a room, when we opened the door to the room we were very please until we found out that someone else was already using the room. we went back to reception and they gave us another room. We got to the new room and the key wouldnt open the door so went to reception again. They gave us another key which worked but when we got in the room it was very basic and not as good as our first room. The bathroom also smelled strongly of sewage. We didn't want to move again so decided to put up with it, but wouldn't go again or recommend to anyone

« Old school but always deliver »

We were so lucky to have our room overlooking Cardiff and the bay! Rooms were lovely and spacious. Breakfast was quite good with variety. A bit far out of Cardiff, but train not far away.will be back again.

« Excellent hotel, great food »

I stayed on business in November and it is clearly a lovely location. There is a fantastic view down onto Cardiff and the Cardiff Bay beyond with a lovely terrace which I am sure would be glorious in warmer weather. The restaurant food was very good indeed, service friendly and efficient. The room was enormous and well appointed, I suppose a little old fashioned in some respects but none the worse for that. It is clearly used as a wedding venue and perhaps if you were sharing the venue with parties of wedding guests it might feel rather different, but my experience was of a good well run country house hotel. I will certainly return if business brings my to the area again.

    « Wedding menu tasting »

What a brilliant idea - getting to taste many of the dishes we get to choose from for our big day! What could have been quite a daunting task has just been made much easier by having our wedding menu taster session. We loved it and are now very excited about our wedding and the great food!

    « Confused »

We tried to book into the hotel on the weekend of 17th & 18th. Hotel was full due to it being a rugby weekend which is understandable. We had told friends how good it is and the views over Cardiff are stunning so we tried to book a table of 4 in the restuarant. "The chef has closed off the diary" we were told "for both days? - Yes" Disappointed, we booked into a nearby hotel and used their restuarant but decided to take our friends to the New House to see the views and have a drink at the bar. To our surprise there were a couple of tables being used in the restuarant but most of the restuarant was empty. Now we were confused, closed or not?? The waiter told us the restuarant diary was closed off for the weekend was so the chef and his staff could go to Cardiff Centre and "soak up the atmosphere" But Wales played on the Saturday why close on the Sunday? Because the chef and staff made a weekend of drinking and watching rugby the restuarant was closed and customers like us were let down big time. Appaling way to run a business and now on future Cardiff visits we will be using the hotel that was there for us and kept their restuarant open despite the rugby in Cardiff.

    « First Class Hotel »

After watching Ireland give France a lesson in Rugby (RWC) at the Millennium Stadium, we took a taxi to our Hotel (15 minutes) out of Cardiff up on the hill overlooking Cardiff City. Our room was spacious to say the least, monster bed,top bathroom, excellent fittings, the room was located in the new wing on the first floor (rm 25) with a large bay window that looked over the courtyard and garden and at night, the view over the city was stunning. The service and staff were friendly and welcoming, the breakfast hot or cold was very enjoyable and would suit any ones taste. We had one problem,we stayed only the one night due to other commitments but we fully recommend this Hotel, on our next trip we will be booking this Hotel for a longer stay. ps taxi to and from 15 pounds each way. Great hotel

« Rather old school but great food »

This place was once amazing. It still looks fairly good but need a coat of paint and modernisation. A bit Faulty Towers in amage but that's not reflected in the staff! Stayed overnight in a very comfortable room with an old bathtub. Not luxury but warm and cosy. The big plus side is the food which was great - dinner and breakfast. Plus an amazing view.

« Excellent Sunday lunch with superb views »

A short time ago we enjoyed a superb Sunday lunch as part of a large gathering of friends and family. The lunch was very good but what stood out was the service. The young man who looked after us (his name I believe was Tim) was a shining example of good customer care. He was attentive without being intrusive, polite without being cloying and made sure everyone was happy. Excellent service.

    « Very Special Occassion »

We were the very first couple to have a wedding reception at this hotel and that was back in 1990. A wonderful occasion! Used it many times since and always been very well looked after and always happy. This time a few Fridays ago it was a small table of eight for my wife's retirement party. From the planning process through booking and the evening itself we were always treated with great courtesy and care. The evening itself we met and had drinks in one of the side rooms then called into our table. The food was quite superb and while many different starters and mains all cooked to perfection and enjoyed by all. Starters, mains and puddings were well spaced out, we were in no way rushed and the wine flowed. We went fairly late and for liqueurs and coffee the night porter took over. What a nice man as were all our staff on that evening. (We were not staying in hotel.) Nothing was too much trouble, the atmosphere and service excellent and my wife thoroughly enjoyed a lovely evening with specially selected work colleagues, "hanging up her boots" after 40 years service with her bank. A lovely send off! Well done and thanks to all at the New House!

    « Murder Mystery weekend »

I was working as an actor at a Murder Mystery weekend at this wonderful hotel. What can I say....the hotel is beautiful with phenomenal views of Cardiff. The service from the staff was absolutely top class. They literally could not do enough for the guests and nothing was too much trouble. The food was beautiful and served with a smile. I slept like a log in the beautiful comfortable bed which was immaculate in every way. Every attention to detail was paid here....I would highly recommend this gem for a lovely break away from it all. Thank you ?

« Strangely pleasant, like an old country house. »

Strangely pleasant in an old country house way. We had read previous reviews. Our room was very spacious and clean. The carpet looked new. But it is true that the place generally is a bit tired and in need of upgrading. The bathrooms in particular are in need of upgrading! The breakfast was lovely. Staff friendly. We would definitely come back though. Views over Cardiff are possibly the best! Potentially I think this is a 5 star hotel but currently overall in 3 star condition. Depending on which room you are allocated. But don't be put off though. If you come realising this as we did based on previous reviews, you will accept it as it is. And there are some parts that are really lovely.

« Our Golden Wedding family lunch »

It was absolutely superb , the service was excellent the young man who looked after us all the afternoon could not be faulted , from helping us adding our bits and pieces to the room which looked lovely any way , to seeing to all the family re drinks , to over seeing the service of the meal to seeing actually to all our needs through the afternoon ... excellent service . The food was superb we had been given an excellent choice and everyone commented on their meal as to how good it all was all the starters, all the maims and the sweets were very very good . We had a most wonderful afternoon , having the private little sitting room prior to us eating also added to the total personal effect of the lunch. The room was exactly right for our numbers and the tables beautifully set out we could not fault anything .

« We held my 60th Family meal at the New House in Cardiff. »

The whole experience of dealing with the New House and their staff was excellent. Starting with booking the venue with Steve, who was very helpful and accommodating, to Tim who facilitated our every wish throughout my special party today. The whole family were extremely impressed with Tim's organisation skills and willingness to ensure we had a pleasant experience, making my 60th one to remember for all the good reasons. The food was of excellent quality. I would not have any problem with recommending this venue. Well done with the training of your staff.

« Visited as a potential wedding venue, left underwhelmed. »

Just to make it clear we visited New House Country Hotel with the aim of sussing it as a prospective wedding venue, we didn't stay the night so this review is purely from a potential wedding perspective as as opposed to an overnight stay. However personally I've found it really helpful reading other reviews of venues on TripAdvisor as prospective wedding hosts when booking viewings myself so thought I'd add in my thoughts for anyone who is planning to view NHCH as a venue :) Originally we thought that this hotel would be one of, if not our top, contender as a venue- Especially given the 4 star rating according to the website but sadly it really didn't live up to expectations. Driving up to the house you can see that the view from the hotel is stunning- panoramic views over the city and on a clear day would provide a beautiful backdrop for photographs. You can hear the quiet hum of the M4 as soon as you get out of the car, but this might not bother some people in fairness and is relatively minor, certainly wasn't a deal-breaker for us. Upon going into the hotel we had to wait 15 minutes past our appointment time in a side room as the planner was still talking with another couple from the appointment before us in the main reception, which wasn't the best first impression. We were then shown both of the rooms that would cater for our needs - the Garden Marquee and the Wyndham Suite. At this stage we were told that if another wedding was booked for the same weekend we and our guests would only be allowed access to one half the hotel (front or back!), and photo opportunities are also limited to 'your' half! Have to say this is the first venue we've looked at that wouldn't offer exclusivity, which might be more important to some than others. Turns out it's quite important to us when it potentially removes the lovely view from your day and your photos! We'd also banked on being able to take most of the rooms for guests to stay in after the reception due to the location being a bit out of town, which obviously wouldn't be possible with 2 weddings on the same date. The marquee itself is a good size space, very light, has its own bar, and thought has clearly been put into how to change the space without having to move guests, which are all positives. On the downside there was a definite "tent smell" as soon as we walked in and the canopy had a lot (and I mean a lot!) of dead flies collected in places, which really wasn't appealing. The Wyndham suite on the other other hand (inside the hotel) is much cleaner, modern decor which has been finished to a high standard and even comes with matching chairs that definitely wouldn't need covering so you could save money here. On the other hand it's really quite a dark room (not much natural light and the colour scheme is dark purple) and there is no bar, unlike the marquee. We were told that for room change here guests would go into the lounge area of the hotel, which we were never shown. We said afterwards that we wished the 2 wedding spaces could be combined as then you'd have one great room as opposed to 2 rooms flawed in different ways! I have to say as well that as although the employee who gave us the tour was very friendly they also made several jokes/slightly tactless remarks about previous weddings that had occurred there to the detriment of the bride/groom - again didn't really leave us feeling that we wanted to come back in case we became the next couple to have jokes made about us. We were left feeling overall that apart from the 2 specific rooms used for the ceremony spaces what we saw of the hotel looked very dated and fell far below what I'd expect from a 4 star hotel. As others have said in reviews there was evidence of a lot of wear and tear in the public areas (again, didn't see any of the individual rooms so can't comment on those). We were shown the menu and noticed that there really wasn't as much choice compared to other venues as well, although I'm not sure whether this is due to the hotel or if they employ external caterers (we weren't told!) It was by no means a dire visit, but knowing how much you're worth to a hotel as a potential wedding in terms of income we expected a bit more from our visit - the "wow" factor just never came. It felt as we left like lots of little things just ended up really putting us off, which took us by surprise given our expectations before the visit. Location is definitely the saving grace for this property.

« A gem on the edge of Cardiff »

Beautiful hotel just outside the city on a hill overlooking the valley and city. We were only here for 1 night, would have liked another night to explore the area. Taxi to city centre cost £16, even late in the evening.

« World Rugby Cup stay »

The building is charming with stunning scenic surrounds. The hotel has country lived in feeling with worn miss matched couches. Unfortunately like everything you base your expectations on what you pay. Like a previous review we paid an exorbitant price for one night obviously hiked up to take advantage of the Rugby influx (AUD). As a result we expected value for money. I found the staff to be very helpful, the ladies on the desk and in particular the young man in the restaurant, however as value for money goes I think we were taken advantage of. Not even full toiletries in the bathrooms. If you are going to charge these prices you should be going the extr mile to make sure what you provide matches If I had paid a less I would have expected less and probably would have been quite delighted as this hotel has its charms. Just don't believe we got value for money.

    « Not Great »

The front door to this hotel set the scene for your stay. It is cracked with paint peeling off. It is a good reflection of the hotel in general. We are not sure why this hotel receives such high reviews. The grounds and exterior are very picturesque and it has a nice view over Cardiff. The common areas are ok but have are ?dated country house' décor feel with everything being slightly worn around the edges. We know we were paying an elevated rate (£263) a night because of the rugby world cup, but the ?suite' (room 8) we were given was a suite in size only. The state of the room could only be described as 3* accommodation. The bathroom hadn't been decorated in ages, and we were met with cracked tiles, mouldy grouting in the sinks and shower, a cracked toilet seat, broken grouting and worn paintwork. The shower door didn't close and the shower faucet wobbled loose from the wall. There was a hole in one of the handtowels. The ?spa' bath looked so old I would not have felt comfortable using it for health reasons. See photos of bathroom. The state of cleanliness in the room was very poor. When I took my socks off after walking in the bathroom they were covered in dirt on the bottom. In the bathroom we noticed quite a few hairs on the floor, hand basin and shower tray when we arrived. Yuk! There was dust on the heated towel rails and corners of the tables. The TV screen was smeared and a bit grimy. The room servicing left something to be desired. We put a dirty used bath mat to the side to be replaced only to find it folded and put back. The shower gel and shampoo were not replenished and the bed wasn't made. The cleaner simply pulled the duvet up leaving the crumpled sheets underneath. The bed itself sagged in the middle and we had to put a blanket underneath the mattress to stop us rolling into the middle. The breakfast was ok with the normal hot and cold choices. However the scrambled eggs in the bain-marie had a greyish tinge and were flavourless. The pastries were stale. The dining table we chose to sit at had one leg a good inch shorter than the rest and was being propped up by two tea-light candles which slipped out. Maintenance obviously isn't a priority at the hotel. We feel that Best Western should review this property as it falls well below the standard we normally find at Best Western hotels.

    « a very nice stay »

Definitely not what you'd expect for a best western. It was more upscale than those in the U.S. Lovely buildings and food. Great views of Cardiff downtown in the distance. Its not centrally located downtown but on the outer limits of the city. With the rugby world cup we didn't even make it downtown for our 1 night stay but the hotel was so nice and the food was good we didn't feel we missed anything.

    « great experience »

Fabulous view overlooking Cardiff and the bay! Rooms were lovely and spacious. Breakfast was quite good with variety. A bit far out of Cardiff, but train not far away. Our navigator took us on a small, narrow road the first time, but there are much better roads to the hotel.

« Beautiful venue, views and rooms »

Stayed when we were guests at a wedding. The views for photographs were amazing and the service was brilliant. Our room was spacious, very clean/immaculate, beautifully presented and the staff were really helpful. Would recommend.

    « Another great stay »

Stayed Friday night with two friends for a catch up. Great as always. We opted to share a family room which was perfect. Dinner was lovely as always and we have booked again for January. We look forward to seeing you again.

« Wonderful Hotel, Beautiful Views »

This Hotel has a wonderful setting, I was lucky enough to be in a room with a view over the whole of Cardiff and the Bay. The room was large with really nice furniture - the bed was huge and very comfortable . Plenty of tea and coffee and when we asked for more milk we were given a nice jug of fresh milk! I cannot think of any negatives and will definitely stay again .

« Wonderful venue for wedding reception »

My daughter had her wedding reception here in August, we stayed the night before the wedding as well to organise decorations etc. The staff couldn't have been more helpful, they helped bring things from the car, brought the chandeliers up for us to decorate then took them back down when requested. They even rescued us from a giant spider at nearly midnight! The wedding reception itself was perfect, Excellent food and very helpful staff. The views were amazing and we received lovely comments from many of the guests.Thank you

    « Beautiful Location »

Have the hotel over the last few years, does not get any worse, though it is exactly the same now as it was 8 years ago . the only thing that has changed is the breakfast is now self serve, thats not a bad thing. Bar prices over the top, i guess as they have a captive audience. the rooms are nice, clean and comfortable. though, i feel for a four star it could do with face lift . always worth a stay to capture the views from the hotel - breathtaking.

« Lovely hotel brilliant setting »

Stayed here because of the reviews I had read. Stunning setting overlooking Cardiff & the gardens make it a tranquil place to stay. My room was large & had nice views of the garden. The staff were attentive & the food was locally sourced- the menu was small but offered enough choice. I would definitely stay here again if I had to visit the area.

« Great Introduction to Wales »

This was my first trip to Wales and what a wonderful hotel to kick off the trip. A wedding was being held yet it did not interfere with our stay. We had a twin bed room with a separate sitting area and claw foot bathtub. The beds were very comfortable yet we did miss our shower and the room ceilings were very low. If you are a tall person ask for a room off the main hotel, higher ceilings and they also have showers. We ate dinner and breakfast in the restaurant and it was excellent. I would highly recommend the bara brith for dessert! The service was outstanding and we commented on how our hospitality folks in U.S. could take a lesson from them. I would definitely return to this hotel.
