    « Okay but »

We went here on our honey moon weekend! The hotel is well located literally a 2 minute walk from reception. It's a very clean hotel. Unfortunately one of the Jacuzzis was pratically cold! And you have to walk outside of the hotel to get to the spa. Our shower wasn't very hot and if any one else was using the water down the corridor that water dropped to nothing. We didn't realise we had to book in advance for spa treatment. So we were very disappointed when we arrived ( after having 2 kids I was desperate for a massage) the lady on reception made us feel awkward. There is working going on at the moment but we went over a weekend and didn't get woken. We didn't eat at the hotel, but next time we would get bed and breakfast!

    « More improvements ... »

It seems every time we stay at The Burnside there are more improvements! Always for the better. We were given what I would call a Junior Suite, just lovely. Just so spacious and relaxing. Wonderful, friendly reception staff - especially Jo Jo - and the friends we stayed with just couldn't believe the decor in the rooms, restaurant and especially the pool area. Whoever decides on the interior design has an eye for it! The beautiful collection of three necklets in the spa bar should definitely NOT be hidden away as it is now. Only one thing could improve things - decent bedside reading lights. However, this isn't going to keep us away, Burnside - our guilty pleasure! So close to the centre, yet so quiet. See you again soon .....

    « 40th Birthday Present »

We have just returned today from the Burnside Hotel & Spa after 4 days 3 nights of pure perfection, I wanted to take my husband somewhere special to celebrate his 40th Birthday & boy did I get it right. From the swift friendly check in at reception to our beautiful family room (344) & bath for two, it could not have been any better. Breakfast was gorgeous plenty to choose from. Romney' bar & spa was amazing again excellent staff. Can't beat having the pool all to yourselves & enjoying a quick drink from the comfort of the jacuzzi. It was also a nice touch having towels provide. Will definitely return to this hotel & sooner rather than later. This was definitely a Birthday my husband won't forget, thank you Burnside

    « Wedding »

We have just had our wedding at the burnside hotel and I cannot thank Chonie and the wedding team enough for the amount of effort they put in from start to finish. When we booked the hotel we had not even seen the penthouse suite or any rooms and really booked it because of the fabulous bay room. The penthouse was the icing on the cake unbelievable room with hot tub on the balcony overlooking lake Windermere.Wil be spending our 1st anniversary there if we are still married.

    « Mixed feelings!! »

Firstly thought I had booked a Standard Double Room but when checking in discovered it was a 'snug' room. Snug it was too! Was like a box room with nowhere to sit and very dated décor with a small window looking into a roof. Asked if I could look at a standard room. Like night and day. Refurbished with balcony looking onto front of hotel. Of course it was at a supplement which I agreed to pay! Very poor pressure on shower and towel rail loose from wall. Now for the positives! Staff were all very nice! Breakfast was exceptional! Public areas beautifully furnished! Bar prices good! Situation could not have been better! Would we stay here again! Probably not as felt for the money charged there are other places in area with better value without the negatives.

    « Friends wedding »

Me and my wife visited this hotel for a friend's wedding.Stayed for 2 nights, we had a fantastic time. The hotel is clean and the staff are very helpful and friendly. Our room was clean comfortable not great views of the car park but our friends had the penthouse suit which was stunning hot tub and stunning views. Used the swimming pool which was clean and tidy and relaxing. We had a great weekend, highly recommended this hotel.

« wonderful staff and fantastic location »

We had a great stay at the hotel. We chose it to celebrate an 80th birthday. The rooms were very good and beds comfortable. The pool area is wonderful and my daughter loved the dark lighting and the shower over the pool. The staff were all very friendly. Every single person said good morning and all went out of their way to be helpful - even when an 80 year old lady couldn't decide where she wanted to sit they waited patiently! I have various food allergies and they were very careful and knew what I would be able to eat (which was almost everything). Certainly recommend it.

    « Friendly staff »

Quite happy with our stay. Our room was lovely, the only downside there was the kids beds needed some TLC and better mattresses. They ended up sleeping on the sofa! Hotel itself is gorgeous and the staff were really friendly. The only major upset for us was the seriously overpriced breakfast. We went into Bowness to eat which was a hassle but a fraction of the price.

    « Aviod For Weddings - V. Poor! »

We had our wedding at The Burnside in summer 2016. The renovation had just been completed so no issues with the facilities. However I would strongly advise people to avoid this venue for weddings. We had a very poor experience. To cut a long story short, and keep this review as concise as possible, the staff organisation from the top down was very poor. Communication from the wedding planner (Chonie) in the run up to the wedding was minimal. We constantly had to chase her up and things were still missed. Then she didn't even bother to show her face on the day itself! A joke. A lot of staff on our day didn't seem to know what was going on and this led to a catalogue of mistakes such as: The vegetarian options not being served. Guests being charged for pre-paid drinks. Hot evening snack for guests served cold and also served to the staff without our consent (and at our expense!). Wrong lighting in the function room, despite several emails confirming precisely what we wanted and agreed by both parties. Staff member said they would go and fix it directly when pointed out. We never saw them again and nothing changed! No staff available to cut the cake for guests (the ones that were around apparently didn't know how to cut a cake!). We were offered 'signature cocktails' which we booked in advance; on the day they told us they didn't have the correct spirits in stock! Wedding favours 'lost' by the reception staff on the morning of the wedding, after being delivered the night before. Only discovered by myself when doing last minute checks ? it seems no one was going to inform us otherwise! Reception staff then took no responsibility and simply told me to sort it out - on the wedding morning!? And more besides... When we raised our grievances with the hotel management it became clear that there was obviously a 'buddies club' dynamic going on with the wedding planner and senior management, where the hotel manager was plainly defending the incompetent staff. Even up to the point of accusing us of lying! Basically they didn't want to know, aside from a weak apology and an offer of a free weekend stay next year. My wife had her special day pretty much ruined by the experience, something we can never get back. So to be offered what we were from the hotel by way of an apology was frankly insulting. Repeated questioning revealed that no one seemed to know why so much went wrong - but more frustratingly, no one seemed to actually care! I was left with the distinct impression that once the hotel has taken your money they don't worry themselves about the service you receive. A weak apology is all you'll get. It seems Chonie the incompetent wedding planner is now the manager (!?). If this is how the hotel rewards inept staff.... well. You have been warned.

    « Excellent »

Just got back from a three day stay with my granddaughter. Everything was fabulous, the staff, the food, the spa, the room, everything. This is my first ever review however I enjoyed my stay so much I felt the need to comment. Thanks Burnside we'll definitely be back. Phoebe and Michael.

    « Lovely break »

We have just had two nights at this lovely hotel. The room was perfect, the pool and spa were a welcome relaxation after busy days walking and exploring and the breakfast was excellent. The staff and service in general was also excellent. We will definitely go back when we can. The location is perfect as within easy walking distance to the lake and shops.

    « family break »

Our room was beautiful, clean and decor excellent. The Spar was perfect (having read reviews saying it was too dark!) It is perfect, relaxing and tranquil. The hotel has lots of different areas where you can sit to eat or simply have a drink and take in the stunning views. The food was excellent and in the bar excellent value for money. Breakfast was outstanding and covered everything from fruit, croissants, fish and full English with lots of lovely fresh breads. The location is stunning and 10 minutes walk away from the hustle and bustle of lovely Windemere. Staff were all so nice and are obviously happy in their work. I am a big believer in a happy boss that treats staff well, in return gets happy staff! I am quite fussy and this hotel is one of the best I have ever stayed in. We opted for a room with hot tub on the balcony. (great view!) The temperature wasn't quite what it should be so we couldn't use it. This was resolved straight away and taken off our bill as we couldn't use it that evening. During our stay the Hotel temperature was fine and the hotel quiet (in reference to comments on A/C!) We were on the first floor. Facing the lake. We are checking the calendar for our return trip, it has it all and the proximity of the town make this perfect if you don't want the car out!

« Great hotel but loads or refurbishment »

Me and my partner came here for an overnight stay on the 21st October overall it's a great friendly hotel and couldn't fault anything apart from the noise of the refurbishment.... 7.30am on a Saturday morning people using drills and walked past our door dragging new carpets etc. This was our biggest out off of all!

    « Lovely hotel »

We had a family room and was great as consisted of 2 bedrooms so we could put our 1yr old to bed in her own room. Lovely flat screen TV and balcony. Location excellent and close to bowness. Our best friends wedding room was amazing with views over the lake. Lovely old building with real character and wonderful staircase coming into the main room but has been refurbished to a high standard. Only criticism would be the dark spa area and the buffet breakfast with no waiter service.

    5
« Great facilities and location »

We had booked three rooms, double room was very spacious with separate sitting area, room was beautiful very elegant, twin room was in the west wing as we had a dog with us room was well appointed balcony area outside the room accessed via French Windows was good for the dog , third room had double and a single bed and hot tub , which was excellent. WE really enjoyed our stay here very relaxing, bar lounge extremely comfortable good wifi. Spa also very good . breakfast offered good quality and a great selection. WE had dinner first night which was good though portions not enough for my teenage sons. location is excellent close to lake,we had a great time and will return.

    « Anniversary stay »

we stayed here for the second time to celebrate our anniversary and it disappointed. Our room was full of flies alive and dead and nothing was done about it. We went for a walk as the location of the hotel was brilliant next to the lake and shops, bars, cafes etc. We did have a few drinks in the hotel bar area which if you sit by the window you have a lovely view of Windemere. The hotel bar prices are reasonable but, if you go into the village area there are cheaper places. For food we did order but it wasn't great and went into the village/town in the end. I found the reception staff to be a little rude especially when i was sat in the waiting area and i could hear them discussing a customer which i found to be rather unprofessional considering i was only a few feet away and could hear everything. The Spa are was lovely, possibly the best part of the hotel and it's relaxing.

    « Clean and tidy »

Stayed here on a room only basis. Room had recently been refurbished and had a quite modern feel, enough clean towels bed clean and comfy. Within easy walking distance to the centre of Bowness. We didn't eat in the hotel as there are plenty of good restaurants with walking distance. Used the pool and sauna, found everywhere clean. Would stay again

    « Great location. »

Comfortable room, although not room especially as we had our two dogs with us. We were made very welcome by Reception staff, and found all staff very friendly. Be sure to book the restaurant for a wonderful four course meal. Romneys bar & spa, great atmosphere. Just a short walk from the hotel to the Windermere lakeside activities and nice village shops. We enjoyed the breakfast. Take the hotel's advice and eat earlier than 8.30 am if you wish to avoid the toast queues. We would recommend this lovely hotel for all the family and fourlegged friends!

« Like stepping back in time »

This hotel was extremely dated. We were actually surprised how dated it was!! Its in desperate need of money spending on it. We did try to leave feedback at the hotel on the comments card but the guests who stayed in the room the night before had it filled out and it hadn't been replenished.

    « Mid October Visit »

2 night family stay with Dog. Swimming pool and wifi signal (in room) excellent. Evening meals very good also. Only issue was the buffet breakfast. The eggs, sausages etc. were overcooked as they are baked under hot lamps and there were huge queues for the toasters. The reception and waiting staff were very nice and the hotel guests were lovely. Location was fine, nice park near the marina to walk the dog and the hotel was not far from all the pubs etc. Overall I recommend.

    3
    « Not So Best »

We booked this hotel for a 3 night break after reading the positive reviews. Our experience was it was not value for money and overpriced for ?room only' at £330 for the 3 nights + £30 per night for ?a view of the lake' (which was definitely not worth it as the lake was just about visible through the top half of a permanently misted up right hand window). Our room was adequate but fairly standard, not particularly big with a standard sized double bed, the shower was poor as it ranged from cold, to warm to hotish depending on the day. The swimming pool is located in a separate building with the ?pub' which means you can't nip to the pool from your room which was a pity as this was one of the main reasons we chose here. The staff are polite and friendly and hotel and rooms are clean. The hotel is about 5 mins walk from Bowness which is a nice walk but worth noting quite a steep hill. However all of Bowness is easily accessible including the Ferry Trips and you can take a nice walk to Windermere in about 25/30 minutes so you get the best of both and the numerous restaurants and bars etc. In short we wanted a nice hotel whilst we explored the area, however if like us you just want somewhere nice to sleep (although we did like the idea of nipping down for an early morning swim) then it may be worth doing some research as we met a number of people in good quality B&B's with en-suites and other 4* where breakfast was included for less money.

« Best hotel in the lakes!!! »

Myself and my wife have had a stressful couple of weeks so decided to take a few nights break.....what can I say. Great staff, delicious food, amazing facilities!!! Just scanning through previous reviews I am stumped as to why someone would say anything negative about the place never mind the staff!! (Perhaps a dig for a freebie) Well don't worry burnside you don't need guests like them when you are so fabulous! Keep up the good work we will definitely be returning!!

    « Weekend break »

Spent saturday and sunday here 10 th and 11th of October. As i was late booking we had a family room at same price as a double and very comfy it was. Checking in smoothly, nice room . No 240. A few niggles but left comments on sheet provided, nothing major just niggling. Our own experiences was that the staff are a very good asset, from checking in and out staff to cleaners they all seemed happy in their job and any questions answered straight away, always smiling. Small pub next door cosy and good food. Spa facilities we used sauna and steam room and pool were excellent.Breakfast very good. Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and after we checked out both agreed we would stay here again.

    « Unsettling !!!! »

Wow!!!! Just been insulted!!! after happily paying £531 for two sleepless nights!! By someone called Chonie, who has not an ounce of pedigree in herself, when I asked who was her senior.... she replied there is no one above me , I'm the manager !!!Well... all I can say is good luck MR RICHARD [--] if you have people like that in charge of your business!! By the way I shall be leaving my Ferrari garaged .....I'm not upset but more alarmed by this experience!!!!

    4
    « Relaxing break »

We have stayed here many times as the hotel is conveniently located only minutes from the town but in a quiet location. We asked for a room we have booked previously as it has a beautiful view . The room itself had not changed since our last visit, nice spacious family room with a sofa and window seat on the second floor close to the penhouse suite, bed very comfortable, could probably do with more wardrobe rail spacd given that it is a family room though there are plenty of drawers, maybe we pack too much! Could also do with a chair high enough to sit to dry your hair as what is there is far too low . Hotel very busy when we were there as there's seemed to be a few conferences on which meant some of the lounge areas were not available for our use. Breakfast had changed a bit since our last visit ,you are shown to a table on arrival and then it was serve yourself which is fine it's just now you have to make your own toast with a toaster that takes forever not good if there is a queue and you also make your own drinks , it feels like you are back and to to your table before you can sit down, there are advantages and disadvantages to this style of buffet breakfast, great selection though can't knock that.Due to number of guests staying in Hotel we felt the tables were too close together seemed a lot less tables too. Good hotel though obviously full due to the number of cars in the carpark but we did manage to get space all the time we were there.

    « 9.5/10 »

Visited The Burnside for my 1 year anniversary with my girlfriend, first time we have been away together on our own and we were looked after so well. We both work in hospitality ourselves so our standards are very high and I am very picky when it comes to hotels. I would give The Burnside a 9.5/10. - Staff were absolutely lovely and did everything they could to ensure you were happy - The Spa was a great experience and I was surprised at just clean it was, absolutely perfect and a must visit. - Our room was heaven, huge bed, TV and couch very accommodating and again very very clean, bed was very comfy as well. Although we only stayed for 3 days on the Saturday my mother and father joined us and we enquired about them staying in our room as we had 2 spare beds, which was no hassle for the staff at reception. They simply gave me a very very good price and that was it, quality service. This morning we went down for breakfast which was brilliant, definitely worth the extra few quid to set you up for a lovely day in the lakes. All in all great experience and we will definitely be returning!

« One night in the lakes.... »

We stayed here for one night and really enjoyed it. Our room was really cozy and comfortable. The reason we chose Burnside is because of the pool and spa and it really made our stay enjoyable. The location was great too as it was 5 minutes walk from the lake and the main area. Parking was free too with many spaces. We would definitely return to Burnside and in future would stay for the weekend!!

« Room OK bar prices OTT »

Spent 2 nights here in a snug room, called snug but actually a decent sized bedroom. parking was difficult as there is building works going on. decent location, 5 mins to Bowness center. Breakfast orange juice was poor quality otherwise breakfast was OK but had to stand in queue to make own toast which took ages. 25ml measures in the bar, double vodka and dash of diet pepsi was £8.10 which is no doubt why the bar was deserted.t

« Bestwestern Bowness on Windermere »

The location of the hotel was very good the room we had was very good we had reasonable views of the lake we did not have time to use the Spa facilities but they looked good.the reception staff were very professional and helpful unfortunately we did not use the bar and dining facilities.

    « Good for location »

We stayed at Burnside Hotel in Bowness recently, joining friends who were staying for their anniversary. Our room was rather full of furniture (less is more approach required) and an odd mix of styles/colour scheme, but the view (through the smallish windows) fine, shower good, bed comfy, but the quilt a bit heavy duty for August. Parking was an issue on arrival (work being carried out & works vehicles) the Spa out of action too! Sat on the patio enjoying a drink after our journey up from the Midlands in the sunshine, the seating & tables were at odds with the modern reception area... old fashioned, tatty & uncomfortable! Our stay included breakfast which was self service, but this (IMO) shouldn't include getting your own tea/coffee & toast or running out of sausage/eggs or beans & waiting around for top ups. Bowness was great & there are plenty of places to eat, drink & stay.. so I'd suggest looking around, as this didn't live up to it's billing.

    « Wonderful Windermere! »

A fantastic stay...hotel food was delicious..comfortable room..very clean. The staff were polite and attentive - definitely stay again. Location. .very central. Spa facilities second to none with cinema room etc. The swimming pool and sport facilities located next to the main hotel building were most enjoyable. Luckily the weather was good during our visit but on rainy days the pool etc would be a.must.

« Lovely cosy Hotel, lovely views of Garden »

Stayed recently, and had a very enjoyable stay. Lovely Room, with buffet Breakfast, with a good variety, Gluten free Bread was offered too. Spa and Pub is just a stones throw, from Hotel. although I didn't use Spa, it looked really fabulous. Walking distance of Lake. Don't forget the Lakes have quite a few inclines.

« Excellent rooms but poor restaurant. »

We've stayed at the Burnside for 11 years and have slowly seen it get better. The room we stayed in (102) was perfect and had been refurbished since we last stayed in it. The hot tub on the balcony couldn't have been any better with lovely views over the garden and lake. We missed breakfast the first morning due to one to many drinks the night before. We made breakfast on the Monday morning and the restaurant had been refurbished and looked very smart. The downside was that you have to get everything yourself Before you were asked if you'd like tea or coffee and what toast you'd like which by the time you'd got your breakfast was in your table. Now you have to get everything yourself and attempt to get toast from a toaster that requires the bread putting through twice. The above in itself isn't that great a hardship but the breakfast we got off the buffet which has a huge sign above it saying "HOT" was far from it, all the items were luke. To sum it up I cancelled breakfast the next morning and walked into town. The above is something I would expect to see in a Aberdeen hotel designed for oil workers not holiday makers in the Lakes. On the plus we used room service one evening which was excellent and when my Wife rang reception after an ironing board and iron it arrived with a minute. All in all I would recommend the hotel as the facilities are excellent but I'd eat in town.

    « Superb »

Arrived here with our dog after a walking break in Scotland for 3 nights of rest and relaxation before heading home. Check in was easy, staff were lovely. Room was beautiful with a lovely patio are (which could be improved with semi screening between each room, and chairs with the tables). Bed was very comfy. Restaurant was fab, with an amazing menu, the food was first class couldn't fault it, however disappointed to find out the menu was identical the next night so no point in booking to eat there more than one night. Breakfast was strange, I've had the get your own toast thing before (and I don't like it) but here we also had to get our own tea and coffee. Sorry not for me. Spa was beyond what we expected, such luxury, just beautiful, could've spent all day in there if we hadn't taken our dog. The bar at the spa allowed dogs so that was great. We'll definitely be back.

    « " Very Relaxing Break " »

Just back from a two night very relaxing break at the Burnside Hotel and enjoyed every minute of it. Our bedroom was a good size, large comfortable bed , two comfy armchairs and large flatscreen t.v , plenty of drawers and bedside cabinets and plenty of clothes hanging space. Large bathroom and lots of hot water at all times. Good choice of quality food on the Evening Menu which is four courses followed by tea or coffee, all served at your pace, no rushing you throughout. Plenty of sitting areas to enjoy a quiet drink afterwards. The bedroom was very quiet and we had two good nights sleep. Very good choices of cereals, fruit, breads, tea cakes and of course the full English had plenty of options. The staff throughout the hotel were very polite friendly and efficient, well done to all them.

    « Disappointing »

Good location, 10 minutes to town. Bedroom small and dark. Washbasin badly cracked and overpowering smell of drains in bathroom. Outdated decor. Was clean however. Breakfast buffet OK but dinner not 4 star standard. We chose to eat at lovely Italian restaurant in town. Better hotels locally!

    « Lake District Weekend »

This hotel is in a great position within a short walking distance to Windermere lake and Bowness. It is in a beautiful setting with lovely views across the lake. The bar in the courtyard is a nice change to the hotel bar and restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We will definitely go back again.

    « Weekend treat »

Perfect weekend. Hotel and staff were lovely. Had the fully inclusive package and some spa treatments. Looking forward to revisiting and would definitely recommend. The hotel had a lovely mix of people so didn't attract one type. Very relaxing and close to town if you want to venture out and look around.

    3
    « Great location »

great location to the centre of Bowness, good parking spaces, pub on site which was handy. Although the spa is small it was relaxing and not too busy and had access to the bar from the spa side, room was extremely spacious the only thing letting the room down was no air conditioning.

    « Lovely Birthday Treat! »

My husband and I stayed here a few days ago. We had emailed the hotel to let them know that we were celebrating a big birthday and on arrival we were upgraded to a beautiful room! We arrived early and were allowed to use the spa facilities until the room was ready at 3pm, which we didn't mind at all. The spa is really nicely done and very relaxing, with 2 hot tubs, steam room, sauna, cold plunge pool and the poolside bar was a nice touch. I must admit I had reservations after reading some of the reviews, but I honestly couldn't fault it at all. We stayed for dinner in the evening and the staff were very attentive and the food was fantastic, oh and the views over the lake were beautiful. Staff on reception were very friendly and willing to help when we asked advise about walks and how to get into the village etc. I also pre-booked a massage treatment and the girl was amazing, even managed to release some of the knots in my shoulders which have been there for God knows how long!! I think maybe it is a little hit and miss with the rooms, but we were lucky and paid for a double room but upgraded to something a little nicer with one of the most comfy beds I have slept in (not actually sure how it was categorised). You can tell there has been a lot of refurbishment recently, but it had a lovely atmosphere and we are already planning our second trip before the end of the year!

« Great Hotel but could be better »

We had a romantic weekend away for our wedding anniversary in mid September. The staff are very polite attentive to all needs. The evening meal if you are going on a dinner bed and breakfast is a bit of a joke with the pricing as you have to pay a £10.00 supplement for the steaks that are only £3.00 more to buy that some of the meals that are included in the packages. that said the meals are great. The only disappointment that we had on our stay was the spa. When we went it was very quiet and a lovely atmosphere with the lights dimmed and really pleasant. After half a hour or so the place turned into a children's wacky warehouse with loads of them appearing and running around like lunatics and shouting and balling. Now we didn't go as a spa weekend so we was not all that bothered as we just got up and came out as more and more kids entered but if you are having a relaxing massage in one of the rooms straight above the pool then i would imagine that its not very quiet or relaxing. Dont go if your expecting a relaxing spa break as i dont think this will happen as reading some of the reviews when we got back quite a few people have had the same experience. I can highly recommend a hour of so in the speedboats on the lake which will only cost you £32.00 for 1 hour + £30.00 deposit when you bring the boat back. We would recommend the hotel if your only using it as a base to stay and see the local area but not for a spa break.

    « Interesting hotel »

A large group of friends met up for a weekend break here. The rooms were good, the decor, great and the meals were excellent. It rained all weekend, and every time we went over to the little spa we got wet. Large puddles formed on the ground so we neede the wellies we hadn't tto bring. Curiously, we are going again this year!

    « Great Location but.... »

The Hotel describes its Spa as 'The most relaxing Spa development in the lakes...' NO IT ISN'T!!! It's an indoor pool version of a Wacky Warehouse crossed with Waterworld. Don't get me wrong the Spa is very well designed but if you thought that you were going to be able to chill and relax with a nice drink in a quiet environment you're going to be very disappointed. I'm not anti kids and most were fine, but when there are 20+ in what is a very small facility it's bedlam. The noise level was unbearable with constant screaming and shouting. One teenage boy thought it was amusing to fill a plastic glass with water, pour it in his mouth then spit it out at his friends. I really did not want to be in a pool which was essentially his mouth wash! His parents and the other parents in the group simply ignored them and let them run riot. I swam to get out and ended up swimming into a dirty plastic glass floating in the pool. We couldn't wait to get out and get a shower. The only problem was that there is no shower gel / shampoo etc and even my wife's towel was taken by somebody else. Locker space is inadequate and there is little space to actually change. On the plus side the hotel staff are very friendly, bedrooms are spacious and the beds very comfy. If I was scoring the hotel then I'd give 4 out of 5 but given that our 1 night stay cost over £300 which obviously reflected the Spa I'm afraid it's not a place we will be running back to.

    « excellent stay »

Lovely clean spacious rooms, helpful friendly staff, food was outstanding d,b and b option excellent value for money, spa facilities were lovely, relaxing and clean enjoyed the fact you could get refreshments whilst using pool facilities, excellent locaton to local town, this is our second visit this year.

    « Two night break »

Another nice nice stay at the burnside hotel in their dog friendly rooms. The room was ideally located and the dog was made welcome in the bar area. The housekeeping arrived very late on the first day after 4 pm to make up the room so we declined as we had arrived back after a full day walking around, so recommend there work to be completed earlier in the day certainly before 3. The breakfast was a little disappointing this time as you had to make your own toast while this is not a problem the time it takes for the toaster is and caused a queue. Much preferred the quicker personal service of bringing your toast and coffee to your table to collecting your own, also the buffet breakfast was not very hot. All other elements of breakfast were very nice and lots of choice.

    « Fantastic Wedding Venue!! »

We had our wedding reception here on 27th August and it was amazing; the venue, stunning wedding breakfast room and friendly, attentive staff who made the whole weekend so enjoyable. A special mention for our wedding co-ordinator Chonie, Adrian and Christian. All the beautiful ladies behind reception, the chef for their 5* food and the housekeeping staff, nothing was too difficult and always a friendly smile. Everyone made us all feel very special. We would highly recommend this as a wedding venue to anyone thinking of the Lake District. The hotel has undergone renovations and the decor is beautiful and modern. There was nothing we could fault. Can't wait for another visit, hopefully in the penthouse suite with its huge hot tub and spacious rooms. We didn't want to leave. FANTASTIC!!! ??

    « Lovely...but »

Stayed with husband and 1 year old. Lovely stay and friendly staff...but one of the main reasons we booked this hotel was the spa which was out of use for a number of hours when we arrived. It was eventually up and running again but a disappointment as we arrived. Would definitely stay again!

    « Bank holiday stay »

Stayed here over the bank holiday. Room was nicely decorated clean and comfortable. The breakfast was good. Nice friendly staff. Has a few rooms where you can take dogs. There is a spa and leisure centre in the grounds and they have just opened a small bar at the leisure centre. Plenty of parking. Small criticism they have a balcony out side the main hotel bar area and this has been redone and not as nice and comfortable as it used to be. Only mention as it was our favourite place to sit and have a pre dinner drink. Lovely view over the lake. They are changing various areas of the hotel so perhaps just not got round to this yet

« Comfortable and in a handy location »

I stayed at the Best Western Burnside Hotel with my wife for a late summer break in 2015. We found the hotel very pleasant and ideally situated for access to Lake Windermere especially for boarding the steamers. Our Room was No.231 which had a balcony, although the views from this were mostly of trees and a car park. The room was comfortable and had a nice bathroom. Before booking the hotel we had checked the on line menus as my wife is unable to eat spicy foods or garlic and from these it seemed the Table d'Hote Silhouettes restaurant would suit us best. However, on arrival we were informed that this was booked by a party and we would have to eat in the A la Carte OneoOne restaurant. The menu there was not suitable for my wife and it was eventually necessary for us to arrange special meals for her with the Reception staff each day. There was no difficulty over this but I could not understand why we could not be offered the same menu as that being served in Silhouettes restaurant rather than the one in OneoOne. The bar, bistro and lounges were adequate and well furnished. There was a very nice terrace and the gardens around the hotel are well maintained with extensive views and although it was still a work in progress at the time of our visit there is also a pub and spa available within the grounds. All in all a very enjoyable stay just the problem over the food didn't please my other half.

« Hotel with big heart »

We had a small room, but told they were fully booked so no option to move. There had been a Wedding over the weekend we arrived. Warm welcome at reception. Spa is lovely, although very busy with families, several children. Not an issue, but not necessarily for all when "Spa" is mentioned. It is not couples only. The Sports bar is nice, but has a very limited menu although well cooked simple foods. We had an amazing three course meal on the first night in the hotel restaurant. Exeptionally good. Best we have had out for a long time. Everything spot on. Room was compact, nicely furnished and comfortable. Shame about view of car park and current building works. Staff are exceptionally hard working, amiable.

« Best western Burnside Hotel WOW! »

Every time we visit Bowness on Windermere it rains, this hotel is excellent as it has the Spa with pool, gym and now its own pub all having been recently upgraded and refurbished to a very high standard. All the staff are warm and friendly, nothing is too much trouble for these people. The rooms are big and comfortable, they are all kitted out with tea making facilities and TV. Some areas of the hotel building have also been refurbished and modified such as reception and the restaurant areas all to a high standard and look great. I have stayed here with my family a number of times and cannot wait to go back again.

    « So relaxing »

We love this place. It's just so nice. All of the staff treat you as special and make you feel at home. So from nan at 88 to Dan at 11 everyone feels comfortable here. And now the place has been done up its even more attractive. can't wait to go back again.

    « Honeymoon . »

The hotel is very nice in a great location ,we stayed here for our honeymoon in the penthouse suit first impression was this is nice ,but the. Money we paid for two nights £690 was not worth the money first they don't put bottles of water in your room this is very unusual ,no mini fridge or pants press little thing like this make a room especially in the penthouse room. The shower wasn't very powerful took ages to rinse my hair, the leather couch was full of stains ,bubble gum stuck on it also under the cushion I found a lighter and some copper ,lots of crumbs very grubby. I sat at the dressing table to d o my makeup the mirror was to high couldn't see . We used the hot tub on the first night was very nice but noticed a smell on the second night that put me off . It was a nice room but not up to penthouse standard very over priced . The staff are all very nice and helpfull . We would stay here again but not in the penthouse .

    « Our stay »

Ok so we booked to stay the night here and I was super excited after looking at all the pictures on the website of the very tasteful modern rooms, the spa looked lovely also.so we were happy to pay the extortionate price of £168 a night without breakfast may I add seen as it was a 2 minute walk to the town and in a great location! We checked in and our room was 131, basically the room was very dated not entirely clean and their was a sewage smell coming from the drains in the bathroom? We don't tend to complain if it's not necessary but we spent most of the night frozen as we had to leave our balcony door open. We checked out unhappy as we pre paid the £168 for the night and mentioned it to the reception girls they were very unhelpful and tried to cover their own backs and told us unfortunately their was little they could do for us at this time. Oh they did state that if we had come down for 9am (breakfast time) they would of gave us a free breakfast...too little too late so with no compensation for our troubles we were sent on our way! Will definatly not be returning but this hotel did NOT effect our lovely trip in Windermere itself we love the lakes but next time we will be staying elsewhere ??

    « Two night stay »

Stayed here on a two night stay . Overall it was good but somethings could have been better . We stayed in a hot tub double which was OK,room standard doesn't quite match the ground floor which creates a good impression of the hotel. On the 1st night we ate in the hotel which was good and decent value , service was very attentive. Breakfast wasn't upto the standard expected and we didn't enjoy the buffet, so much so we didn't go down for breakfast on the second day and ate in Bowness instead. We have stayed in nearby hotels and the breakfast standard has been much better. The hot tub on the balcony was lovely, warm water with no problems and as we had a hot tub we didn't use the spa and indoor pool,as others have mentioned it is very dark inside and doesn't look inviting . Location of the hotel is great and just a 5ish minute walk to the bars and restaurants and the Lake, would we stay here again ? , maybe but will try some of the other hotels around to compare.

« Relaxing Spa with just a day pass »

You don't need to be staying at the hotel to use the Spa. We bought day passes at a reasonable price. This included the usual pool and sauna etc but also the gym and their cinema, showing two films a day. Children are able to use the facilities accompanied by adults, within certain times of the day. We went on a Friday and there were no children, we had a lovely relaxing quiet experience. The pool isn't very big but is darkly lit with blue water and looks amazing, very relaxing atmosphere. Two Jacuzzis, steam room, sauna, cold plunge pool and recliner chairs. There is also a pool side bar. There is parking at the hotel yet its very close to the centre of Bowness. We were very happy with our visit and can recommend to others if you just want to unwind.

    « Perfect Location! »

We came here for a weekend away in August and it was lovely! The hotel is in the perfect location! Literally a 5 minute walk and you are in the heart of Bowness! The room was tastefully decorated and has such a stunning view...the balcony was a welcome surprise too! The staff were all polite and helpful...we didn't visit the spa facilities as the weather was kind so we spent the majority of our time away from the hotel! However we were told that they were lovely! A very enjoyable stay...I would return!

    « Lovely 2 night stay »

We decided to pay a little extra and booked a hot tub room. So glad we did! Such a lovely room, newly decorated to a high modern standard. Very clean & tidy. Bedroom with seperate living room area which led onto a decked terrace with hot tub for 2. Bathroom good size with bath & shower. Breakfast each morning was lovely. All staff very polite & helpful. Only a minute walk into the centre of Bowness. Free car park, plenty of spaces. We didnt use the spa. My only niggle was the people that were above us were very noisy & each morning we could hear them walking about, which did wake us. This isnt the hotels fault, but guessing very thin walls. Would 100% stay here again. Lovely hotel kept spotless.

    « Great Hotel »

What an amazing hotel totally modern in the lovely slightly dated surroundings. Service and food were fantastic and a very short stroll into town makes for a perfect location We were lucky enough to have a hot tub on our balcony with views of lake Windermere, stunning and needed after a days walk Definitely worth a visit

    « Lovely Hotel »

This hotel does not disappoint. It is about a ten minute walk in to Bowness so very handy for everything . The decor of the rooms is lovely and there is a pool and Spa. Prices are reasonable. Breakfast was lovely and set us up for the day. There is a restaurant offering evening meals but we preferred to go in to Bowness.

« Beautiful hotel and location! »

Booked a family room for two nights, with my other half and two boys 4 and 5 years. The hotel is in a great location only a few minutes walk to nearby town centre and lake with ample free parking. We arrived early however the pleasant lady at reception checked us in and advised us we could use the spa facilities until our room was ready. The spa area is lovely and clean and warm, if a little dark with a good size pool and two Jacuzzis. Very nice. We were then ready to go to our room which was a pleasant surprise. It was a mezzanine room with one kingsize bed downstairs, with a living area, and 2 single beds with another tv upstairs. It was really cosy and the kids loved there little separate area upstairs. Everything was clean, modern and to a very high standard. Breakfast was a buffet breakfast, large selection of hot and cold food, really tasty and fresh, only gripe was the scrambled egg tasted strange, not sure why. We ate out for our other meals so can't comment on the other meals served here. The whole hotel is decorated beautiful, staff are friendly and professional, we were sad to have to go but vow to be back. A lovely family hotel, but fabulous for single or couples also.

    « Spa visit »

We had a free pass to the spa from staying at a local B&B the cranleigh. The spa was lovely. Very modern and it felt very indulging. The changing rooms where well equipped however I had huge difficulty with the lockers! They use pin codes and I found it confusing! However I can not say a bad word. It's a lovely spa, there are a pool, 2 hot tubes, cold plunge pool, sauna and steam room. Perfect.

    « 10 year anniversary stay over »

Stayed at this hotel for one night last Friday with my boyfriend as part of celebrating our 10 year anniversary. We got a package of dinner, bed and breakfast and also paid for a room with a hot tub. We were a bit early for check in (as we wanted to make most of the day in Bowness) so were told our room wasn't quite ready but would be available at 3pm; but we were told we could use the spa at this point if we wanted which was good. On returning later for check in I was really pleased with how nice the room was and we had a good sized balcony with a great view so it made it even nicer when sitting in the hot tub. The evening meal was lovely and breakfast was also good with plenty of choice. Only down side unfortunately (hence the 4 star rating) was that there turned out to be a problem with our hot tub. The filters kept going off every 30mins until approx. 1am and then came back on from around 6am so didn't get the best of sleeps. I did report it to housekeeping and also reception the next morning who apologised and would get it looked at. I would definitely recommend this hotel and will be staying again.

    « Great location but.... »

Stayed at this hotel last weekend travelled with my sister ( trip advisor no drop down option to explain this??) location great less than 500 m to Lake Windermere & the tourist hub?madness of hundreads of people milling around before booking themselves on boat trips. The hotel common areas lovely the pub outside lovely comfy drinking spot - the bar inside umm nice - but both bars shut at 2300 - seriously even for hotel guests ? Very poor most hotels bars stay open as long as guests want them open. Our Room fine basic - no fridge? Really expect a fridge in hotel rooms nowadays. Tea & coffee provided with a kettle - yes but sad PG tips 4 tea bags + Nescafé sachets in a drawer in a posh Twinings tea box - use a Twinings tea box most would expect Twinings tea! In bathroom nice towels heated towel rail shampoo & condition mixed type ( don't like) but provided with tube of body lotion & shower gel replenished next day. Mixer shower was fine . Beds far too soft pillows awful too soft hideous hollow fibre but did read hotel info next day & realised could have got feather pillows - not hotels fault purely mine. Biggest issue we had we had a twin room with French doors into a communal terrace ( with 3 other rooms) at front of hotel. No other window as it was a communal terrace we did not feel it was safe to leave door open - so sleeping was suffocating no air just suffocating, no air con or climate control In room was just hideous! Woke up every hour on the hour feeling umm suffocated ! Also on terrace tables outside every room but no chairs???? Really ? We asked for chairs & were told they must have been taken up steps to side of our room for guests to use on lovely communal terrace outside bar - great but seriously BUY some more chairs, after asking for 2 chairs for our terrace table 1 appeared- there's two of us we asked for two bloody chairs! I ended up carrying a chair from the upstairs terrace myself in the pitch dark - another issue the terrace outside our too had lights - great except they were ever turned on - not so great! Another issue maybe nit picking but on our second night we asked for a bucket of ice for our room - were given sad few blocks in big bucket & told we've had a very big wedding we've run out of ice ? Again seriously ??? I have a tabletop ice maker at home that makes loads of ice - hotel obviously used frequently for weddings. - but you run out of ice for everyone else staying - crap crap very poor. Would I stay at this place again ? I didn't realise when I booked it was a 'Best Western ' hotel if I'd realised I would have never booked because my previous experiences with the 'best western' chain of hotels has always been they are definitely not the best at anything - minor niggles didn't spoil our trip because we just had the best time ever being shown the beautiful Lake District by family members. But best western burnside umm you just were not the best at anything!

« Nice weekend but could of been better! »

Enjoyed a weekend stay to celebrate our wedding anniversary. On arrival we were given a quick tour of the restaurant and sitting areas within the hotel which looked very clean and well appointed. We were then directed to the separate bar and pool building to have a look around as our room wasn't ready. Lady on reception was very helpful and friendly. We were a little bit disappointed with our allocated room (241) and felt it was bordering on the 'snug' rather than the 'standard' double room we'd been promised. The bathroom especially was quite cramped. However we didn't let this spoil our stay too much! The bar outside to the left of the hotel entrance is welcoming and relaxing but found access to the pool within the bar to be somewhat odd. The actual pool and spa were nice but I agree with some of the earlier reviews that some people may find the lighting to be a little dark, having to keep getting out of one of the hot tubs to restart it and chlorine levels in the other hot tub quite uncomfortable. I felt that some of those spin type dryers would have been useful in the changing rooms too. For these reasons we visited only once which was not our intention when we booked! The location of the hotel in relation to the lakeside and shops is ideal. If you want to go to the lakeside you are better off heading down the bank to the left of the hotel (if standing at the entrance) and turning right but if it's the shops you want to get to first you would be quicker heading right along the lane then left onto Kendal Road. Periods of door slamming did bother us from time to time but this was not the hotels fault, just other thoughtless guests! I'm grateful that some items of clothing which I'd left behind were returned to me, thank you. Would we return to Burnside Hotel and Spa? .... probably not. We chose this hotel specifically for its pool/spa and as this wasn't a better experience, if we returned to the area we would probably try one of the many other hotels or B&B's instead.

« Wedding and weekend stay »

From start to finish the service at this beautiful hotel was outstanding. Chonie, our wedding coordinator listened carefully to what we wanted and the team delivered all that we had hoped for. We all appreciated the discrete attentiveness of the staff, and having the run of the different areas according to our needs. The rooms were beautifully well appointed and our hot tub on the balcony a very welcome addition when the weather deteriorated on Sunday evening. The spa is dark and cosy - a wonderful place for us to continue to enjoy family time after the wedding celebrations. The food was delicious and well presented. The chef did not balk at requests for special dietary arrangements. We would recommend this gem - and its staff- for any occasion, but it was especially well suited to a wonderful wedding and group stay . Thanks to all the team, led, on this occasion, by Chonie - a joy.

« Visited Swimming Pool / SPA as a guest of Cranleigh »

Dark pool and spa facilities directly off the pub which was weird and unnerving. Warm plungepool and luke warm hot tub with the button to turn on the jet bubbles located at other end of room so very inconvenient. It was ok,but not worth the walk over from the Hideout at the Cranleigh. We stayed just an hour and quickly got bored rather than relaxed as everything was very mediocre including the temperature of the water!

« Beautiful and fantastic for families »

Upon arrival I was really surprised how pretty the hotel is. We checked in and went to our room and was delighted! Had a meal in the restaurant which was a really good price and food was delicious.. Staff were really friendly. We used the pool which has a shallow part for the kiddies.. And a pool bar for us parents... Breakfast was delicious... Lots of choice and the kiddies really enjoyed all the food. Hotel was a 2 min walk from the centre.. Would definitely recommend to anyone with small children. Only request I would have for future would be a fridge in the room.. To keep cold drinks for the kiddies

« Late review - would not return. »

Stayed here as part of a Christmas present from my partner. Definitely think he was overcharged for the experience we had. Room was freezing - had to ask for heating for room and still wasn't very warm. Given a portable oil heater but didn't have much of an impact. Room was above car park - was noisy. Key into room was very temperamental Spelling mistakes in the handbook in the room. Bedside lamp not working - had to go and ask at reception. Pre booked meal in restaurant and didn't get asked for a time - when asked for a time we were told the time we wanted wasn't available - could've been avoided if asked when initially booked. Restaurant was freezing. Seated next to a boarded up door, advised heating was on but then when boyfriend went to ask about heating he noticed the oil radiators plugged in in the restaurant were not turned on. Real restaurant was being refurbished so we're in a makeshift one and seated next to a boarded up while in the wall. When checking out they tried to say we hadn't paid for meal on Tuesday night - tried to add a £40 charge to the bill, we paid cash for meal so no receipt given. Staff were very rude to us and it seemed like trying to resolve this was a massive issue for the staff.

    « Luxury stay »

An extremely impressive hotel! The staff are friendly and amazing. And the rooms are luxury. A bit pricey but nevertheless totally worth it. The spa facilities are excellent with a pool, two Jacuzzis, a sauna, at steam room and a pool to cool off in! They have two dog-friendly rooms which is great for us and the rooms are completely spacious with amazing features! They have a cinema which shows children's films during the day and 15+ films from 20:15. The lounge room has amazing service and would recommend going there! Also the bar serves superb food (I had the sirloin steak with garlic butter; it was the best meal I could have possibly had!) Right in the centre of Bowness so it wasn't a far walk into town, they also have lovely footpaths for walking and the grounds are good too. I know it may sound like I'm being overly-positive but I couldn't fault this hotel on one thing! Will definitely be staying again!

« Not much to write home about, expecting more! »

We had the Penthouse suit Friday and Saturday which cost us £600 for the 2 nights so was expecting something a little special. The description says its on 3 floors so I wasn't expecting toilet, then 3 steps to the bed then final 3 steps to the lounge area. I thought it would have been more open plan and spacious. Don't get me wrong the balcony with hot tub was fantastic and the view was cracking, but I now understand why there isn't any pictures of the penthouse room apart from maybe 1 or 2 on the website. There is also a weird door/hole half a metre in diameter located on the wall in the bedroom area of the room which leads to some kind of dark loft space with no lock so just seems a bit odd, I tried shutting it but had no luck, also asked a member of staff who brought a fan to the room and he didn't have a clue,,,there is a picture attached! We didn't take advantage of the spa but we did want to use the gym which was closed due to referb,, which nothing was mentioned on the website or when I spoke to the hotel when booking so that was disappointing as this was one of the main reasons we booked the Burnside! Staff were friendly but expect to be waiting to be served at the hotel bar. We waited a good 5 minutes before having to go looking around the hotel for staff. We would go back but certainly wouldn't be paying for the penthouse again and would also be asking what facilities are open to customers before booking!

« Nice hotel... Lovely stay »

We stayed here and have to admit were a little worried with some of the reviews, But we were pleasantly surprised. A nice hotel newly refurbished around the reception and bathrooms etc. Our room was huge with a large bathroom and spacious lounge/sofa area with dressing table. Although some bits of furniture a little dated in and around the room I can only assume they are slowly getting round to updating the rooms. The staff were all nice enough and helpful ... And housekeeping were fantastic. A lovely hotel and well situated only a few minutes walk from the waterside and the centre of town.

What a lovely hotel to stay at. I booked for me and my fiancée just for a night. Booking days 15:00 but we turned up at 12:00 to pay for breakfast and our room was ready and they let us have it. A great little bar and eatery, with a spa and gym beyond a door at the back. With lake Windermere and bowness centre literally around the corner it ticks all the box's watever you age. Will definitely book again.

Was very nice, good location, breakfast was nice, a lovely outside area, despite tables being mismatched and wobbly, a nice way to spend a sunny afternoon. Rooms were quite noisy and could hear every noise from corridor but we're very clean and cosy. Was a bit pricey for what we paid but still enjoyed it and works stay again

« Very good but just not quite right »

I booked this without noting it was a Best Western, the last few I had stayed with this chain they fell below standard and hoped this would be better. This 4 star hotel is in a great location for Windermere and only a short walk to Bowness, the pool and spa are excellent, though I don't want a bar man (acting pool security guard!!) demanding my room key paper to prove I was staying there and "doing me a favour" by letting me in when I didn't have it, I didn't need it on our first visit the same day! The lift on Friday was broken, staying on the 3rd floor a small inconvenience but sure others would have issues. The room size was ok, but had a "musty" smell which cleared when I opened the windows, the bathroom has no shelf for toiletries and very small, hot water in the shower took an age and then was directed to the wall as the shower head was loose. Having been out for the day we sat in the lounge near the window to read our books, it took over 30 mins before I managed to attract the waiter to order drinks, I was wrong when it came but I still drank it, we sat there for over another hour, empty glasses and no sign of anyone wanting to clear or refill - absolute dreadful service. Yes, I could have gone to the bar but I thought I'd see just how long it took after the first drink. In the end we gave up and went for a walk into town to spend our money where it was more deserved. Breakfast - we arrived at 9.35am (closes at 10am) to find a few remnants of bacon, no beans, and no eggs (told its nearly finished so no more coming) so I abandoned that idea, the cereal is in open bowls and had flies on it, gave that up and had toast as a last resort - the traditional toaster was useless it then went into the rotary toaster that took three goes to make it mildly brown. You can get dispensers for cereal now maybe worth investing in a few, I did over hear others moaning about the flies. So is it a bad hotel - NO its just not quite what a 4 star should be and very typical of what I have experienced at other Best Western's. Nice place to stay but could do much much better for a little training and a bit of investment.

    « Fantastic hotel! »

My husband & I had a three night stay at this lovely hotel and loved every minute. The location was great, with idyllic surroundings set on the hillside with lake views and plenty of outside terraces to enjoy the setting sun at the end of the day. Inside, the hotel is beautifully decorated with a sumptuous feel, good attention to detail, and lots of comfortable chairs to sink into! The hotel is very close to the town centre so we didn't need the car for evening meals (we didn't eat in, although the restaurant looked lovely). We were fortunate to stay during the best week of the year with the heatwave, but had a great room on the first floor at the side of the hotel out of the direct sun, with a lake view, so were able to sleep well in the very comfortable bed. Downstairs the bar, lounge and breakfast room had air conditioning so that was appreciated. The staff were all really warm, welcoming and efficient and made our stay even more enjoyable. We decided not to use the pool and spa as the weather was too good to miss. The boat cruises are just down the hill from the hotel and some lovely bars and restaurants also very close by, as well as great shops. There is a very steep drive at the front of the hotel but access also at the rear on more of a level. The breakfasts were fantastic!

    « Lovely Stay »

Enjoyed a lovely weekend here! Fantastic hotel in a brilliant location, could not be much closer to all amenities. Our room was lovely and very modern, Standard Double but for what we paid was exceptional. The view was of the car park but it was not noisy. The room was clean and sheets changed each day. The bathroom was ok for us but was quite small - I assume they do have bigger though! Spa/Pool access was also lovely, very clean and relaxing. We got room only booking and whilst we tried breakfast at the hotel one morning, it wasn't for us. It's self service, even tea & coffee to making you own toast. This may suit some guests but it's nice to be waited on when you're away. 2nd morning we tried a cafe within walking distance, lovely! This would not put us off visiting again. Staff are very professional and polite! will defiantly return

« Beautiful hotel, shame about some of the staff!! »

Me and my new husband visited for our honeymoon! It could not of been a more beautiful hotel And location but I suppose this is reflected in the cost of staying! We emailed the hotel informing them before our arrival that we were visiting on honeymoon as we did with the other three hotels we stayed at during our trip! We were not expecting anything, maybe a nice welcome and best wishes! However the other two hotels spoiled us on our arrival! We would not have minded but burnside emailed back promising they would arrange something for us! On our arrival we went up to our room and to our disappointment there was nothing but a bad view of building works from the balcony, why promise if you will not deliver???! The hotel was very quiet and the staff seemed very rude! It was as though anything you asked them was a big job and annoyance such as trying to book a treatment in the spa! The spa was beautiful but again ruined by the rude staff. We paid for bed and breakfast which one day we were going to miss as we were going out early, when asking if we could go down and get some cereal early which was greeted with a very judgemental look and informed us that there would be a charge of £10, we could not understand why! The hotel is gorgeous walking around and the spa is lovely, however there was a used dirty cup left in the steam room the whole time we were there and some places were a bit dirty but mostly was well lit and romantic! We would not stay here again as the staff were not helpful and often rude; good staff make a hotel what it is I believe and they built our hopes to then disappoint us!

    « great place »

This was our last stop after touring Scotland and went for something a bit special, we weren't disappointed the Spa facilities were great , after riding from inverness the Spa was most welcome . We had food and drinks in the bar very good quality and seemed good value not over priced like hotels can sometimes be. We had room only rate so cant comment on breakfast we could have paid extra £12 which seems a lot so found a lovely café on the pier for £6

My wife and I stayed at the Burnside for 4 nights and what a fabulous stay it was. Calm surroundings with great food and drink. The spa complex was great, especially after a hard outdoors day. Room was spotless, spacious and very well presented. The staff at reception cant do enough to help and are so polite with a constant smile on their faces. Even the housekeeping staff go the extra mile to make sure you want for nothing. This hotel is one of the gems of Bowness and we can't wait to go back.

    « Great Weekend Break »

We had a lovely family weekend break at this hotel last week. The rooms are beautifully appointed, the staff were very friendly and efficient, and the hotel is only a short 5 minute walk into Bowness for all the attractions. The hotel has its own spa and pool which were lovely however it is quite dark inside and I do think the lighting could have been brighter. I would definitely recommend this hotel.

Enjoyable stay, decent bed and close to Lake Windermere and Bowness centre. A bit pricey but you get what you pay for, a lovely room and friendly staff. Lots of pubs in Bowness which serve good beer and have good surroundings, a good atmospheric town.

« Spa weekend for 30th birthday celebrations! »

We visited burnside hotel and spa on 9th July as it was celebration for 30th birthday. I came with my friend to celebrate in style. We arrived a little early as we traveled a long way. When we came to reception the girls on the reception were very welcoming and we explain we were early and she said our room was ready and we could and settle in. Once we were settled in we grab our swim wear and went to see what the spa was like. It was so beautiful and clean and bar in spa which was a bonus! The staff on the bar were very welcoming and helpful and we both enjoyed the spa and enjoyed having a glass or two of prosecco. Once we both experienced the hot tubs and the pool we went to get ready for evening meal and service was excellent and food was out of this world. You can see by the staff they care about there customers and make sure they are happy with there room and stay. As me and my best friend paid for spring spa weekend on day 2 we had a treatment which was amazing and felt great afterwards the beauty girls really look after there customers. This place I was recommend it to anyone, I've got to say we will both be returning ??

    « Hot tub room »

Stayed here last week upgraded to a room with a private hot tub on the balcony. overall the stay was good we have been the lake district many times so we know the area. The only downside to our stay i would say was the value for money. We paid all But £200 pound a night to stay in the room and it just didn't look good quality, white staining on the walls, cheap furniture on the balcony and a big rip in the carpet next to the Tv. All things you wouldn't expect for a £200 a night room. Hot tub on the balcony was good and the floppy haired young man behind the bar at night is a credit to the hotel. Over all a ok stay but i wouldnt rush back.

    « Superb... »

Welcomed from the start, have to say that nothing was too much for the staff here, welcoming and friendly, shown to our room which was amazing, beautiful views and a hot tub, we even enjoyed it in the rain! Lovely meal in the hotels restaurant, try the lamb it's superb. Breakfast was great, lots of choice and the spa, the best we've been to in a long time, booked myself a pedicure for a treat and I have lovely French polished gel nails!

« Not What We Expected »

I booked this hotel for a relaxing weekend away, my husband is due to go into hospital so I thought I would spend a little extra as he would not be able to travel for a while. On our first visit to the spa it was very strange, the swimming pool area was very dark, we had to watch out step, we had not been here before so we weren't sure of any steps. We went into what we believe was the ?old Jacuzzi' it was nice but the bubbles only bubbled from the middle, the jets around the sides were broken so you just got a rush of bubbles in the middle which was a bit in your face, not good, also you have to get out of the tub every few minutes to press a button over the way (why could they not have it on the side). We noticed another Jacuzzi which we believe to be the 'new Jacuzzi', up a few steps, that was better but the chlorine was so strong it hurt our eyes, so we go out. On the second day of our visit we went to the spa and could not believe our eyes, never have we been to a spa where you are allowed to drink alcohol in the pool. There were about 25 men in the swimming pool, and both Jacuzzis all drinking pints of beer (apparently a stag do, spending the day in the spa then off to town)!! They where loud and some even climbing off the Jacuzzis into the pool, there was a family there too, their children were running about, jumping in, it was chaos! We left. I did mention to the bar person (who I found out the next day was the manager of the spa) but he said, it is what we do here, he was not concerned with my complaint, he did not seem to care or listen he just stood there, also why would he not introduce himself as ?the manager', very unprofessional. I spoke to a lady who is member of the spa, she told me that the hotel has a new manager, she told me how lovely it was before he changed the spa, she said he wants his customer to ?drink champagne' in the pool/ Jacuzzi area, that was astounding to hear, to me an accident waiting to happen, and a breach of health and safety, especially because the area is so dark. We have been to the lakes many times and love it, we had a lovely time out and about with our dog. The location of the hotel is perfect, but the new manager has spoilt the atmosphere of the spa. I would not go back to this hotel, there are many others to choose from, make sure you shop around and read reviews before you book, I would not have gone to this hotel had I known. Many of the reviews were good, but maybe they did not use the spa.

    « Top Class hotel »

checked into this hotel for 2 nights after 5 days in Whinfell Center Parcs. Hotel is really good, clean, modern. I think our rooms had just been finished being re-furbished that day. Staff we very accommodating and our room was massive, more than enough room for the 5 of us (not many hotels do family rooms of 5). Pool is good and the water really warm. Food throughout the hotel was excellent and the breakfast was first class. Only minor drawback would be that car parking could be an issue. Location of hotel is brilliant, just a few minutes walk into the town center.

    « Penthouse by name »

Stayed here for two nights. I cannot fault the staff, helpful, friendly and quick to respond. Hotel in the throws of being refurbished and on the surface it looks very good, love all the slate being used on some of the walls. We stayed in the Penthouse, which had recently been decorated. We both loved the look of it, furniture fitted in well except for the wardrobe and chest of drawers which were the orange wood colour old fashioned pieces. The rest of the furniture is black and black and pewter so these pieces looked like they had just been put there with no thought, that was a shame. Oh yes the safe was on the floor of the wardrobe, not ideal as you have to kneel down to use it. The bathroom finish was poor, the shower head from shower tray to shower jets was 6ft 1ins, the exact height of my partner, so taking a shower he had to stoop to get a good covering of water. The taps in the sink had so little space between the sink and spout that you couldn't get your hands underneath. The amenities were a joke (see photo), no hair conditioner and one very small bar of soap. And after midnight there was no hot water. The bedding was of a cheap brand, hard pillows, hollow fibre quilt, and a thin mattress topper. Being a 4 star hotel and staying in the PH I would expect feather pillows and quilt and a lovely fluffy mattress topper. There was a fairly bright green safety light in the hallway which was open to the bedroom and it was like sleeping with a light on all night. There was another orange wood small beside table in the corner which housed the kettle and limited choice of tea and coffee, you can imagine how low it was (see photo). There was a hot tub on the balcony which was lovely and clean and a great temperature but unfortunately the balcony furniture had seen better days. The cleaner missed some fundamental jobs, left dirty glasses from the night before, didn't plump up the cushions and the blanket wasn't folded. Overall we were disappointed with the room and felt let down with the lack of thought put in to the comfort of the room especially when you are paying your hard earned money on something you thought was going to be luxury living for two days.

Stayed at burnside for 3 days and 2 nights with my partner and we both agreed it was the best couple nights sleep in a long time! The breakfast was amazing filled us right up and a great selection of drinks at the bar. All the staff we meet were very nice always smile and very helpful. 10 out of 10 will stay again.

« Lake District hotel - Just brilliant »

I have been to the Burnside several times and never been disappointed, recent upgrades are excellent and the pool area is just very relaxing. Food is always good, drinks a little expensive but worth it for the standard of accommodation.

« Wonderful Rooms, Just a short walk from the lake »

Our rooms were freshly decorated and included a desk, and included a kettle, tea and cookies. Very clean, and warmer to dry our towels. Pool was good temperature and had two hot tubs, and even some evening hours when children were not allowed. A bit dark with Silver fixtures but we were happy. Self locking lockers so we could change at the pool. We added the breakfast and found it to be a full English Breakfast Buffet with fruit, cereal, yogurt etc. There is a pub or a Lounge. In the evening the lounge had drinks at a very reasonable price so we could stay in on a cold evening. Movies at night for children while parents are in the onsite pub. Great for couples or for families.

had a great time the location was great we used the boats on Windermere to travel around visiting the aquarium of the lakes and Ambleside The boats were two minutes from the front entrance to the hotel The staff were very helpful and friendly room was first class we didnt use the spa but it looked really nice this could be the best hotel ive staid at

    « Hotel Burnside, Bowness »

The hotel is approached via a very steep slope; not much fun on foot with luggage. The room was hot and the only means of ventilation was by leaving the balcony door open; not good for security. Water pressure was too low for an adequate shower, and the curtain fixing was broken anyway. The room safe was at floor level and required groveling to use it. Quality of breakfast items was disappointing. Staff very good.

    5
    « Spa break »

I can't begin to say how much I like this hotel. The decor, the room, the staff, the spa facilities and the location are all excellent. Breakfast good, plenty of choice too. Didn't use the restaurant, although did use Romneys bar for food and that was good. Ok, drinks maybe slightly pricey but only what I'd expect from a hotel like this. The spa treatment package was very good. Two of us had the same package but tailored to our needs. The beauticians were lovely, welcoming and very good at their jobs. In fact nothing seemed too much trouble with any of the staff and they were so flexible to our requirements. If I come back to the lakes (highly likely!) would pick this hotel. Thoroughly recommend!

    « Very nice »

The hotel was lovely; we had a standard double with a balcony. The room was clean, spacious and decorated to a nice standard. There was plenty of room for our travel cot. My only criticism of the room was the mattress seemed old or cheap so was not comfy and the mixer tap in the bathroom didn't mix so was a bit dangerous! Can't comment on breakfast, we ate out as the room only rate was £40 per night cheaper and no breakfast is that good! However we did eat in the pub on site one evening which was nice. Pretty standard pub fare in terms of menu but good quality and good service. Spa was excellent. Nice pool, sauna, steam room, plunge pool and relaxing loungers. We went at 8pm and it was empty. Location couldn't be better, within 5 mins walk of the lake (although the driveway is quite steep!)

    5
    « Excellent »

We visited this hotel for the weekend and had a great time. The staff were all friendly, the food was lovely and a choice of where to eat. The pub on site is cosy and offered lovely ales and an onsite cinema which was a great surprise. The spa is amazing and with adult time after 7pm is a great bonus. The hotel is a few minutes from the town centre with a good choice of local shops and restaurants. We will defiantly be coming back later in the year.

    « Fantastic wedding venue »

We had our wedding here in May 2016 and it was amazing. The staff were fantastic and made sure we had an amazing day and ensured that it ran smoothly. All of our guests were impressed with the lovely new refurb and enjoyed a long weekend in the spa etc. The Bay Room and restaurant had also just been refurbished just before our wedding and they looked lovely and modern, we were really impressed. We would highly recommend this venue for a wedding/function, the staff cannot do enough for you and was good value for money. The hotel even provided chair covers and flower arrangement in the colours of our wedding, and even went as far as personalising menus for the wedding breakfast with different pictures of us on the cover. Little touches that didn't go unnoticed. Anyone looking for a venue I can't stress enough how great this hotel really was. Thanks again for an amazing day! X

« Lovely hotel in a great location »

Lovely hotel for a few nights stay in a beautiful location. The hotel was lovely, the staff were helpful. We stayed on an offer with dinner included one night, the food was lovely. The spa facilities are great, very relaxing for a couples mini break/weekend away. We stayed mid week and the only thing we didn't like was that breakfast finished at 09:30 - far too early for us! Rooms are basic and you can tell its an old hotel but the location outweighs those negatives.

« Suprise wedding and birthday celebrations »

This was my first trip to the lake district. The trip was made perfect by a surprise wedding and by the staff at burnside hotel. The staff went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and always had a smile. No request was too great and they even attempted to provide us with a TV to watch the football during our birthday meal (not my request that's for sure ha). The rooms were spacious and immaculate however my only criticism was that there was no aircon and so the room was slightly stuffy. Location was perfect and was within walking distance to the lake and shops. Enjoyed the spa, very tranquil. My 11 month old son enjoyed it and it was great to see the other guests and their children having fun. Would definetly return.

« Nice location, shame about the Spa! »

Firstly the good points: This hotel is located perfectly if you wish to visit Windermere and Bowness, it's a 3-4 minute walk from the hotel into Bowness. The food in the restaurant is delicious with lots of choice and fresh ingredients. We stayed in a garden view suite which was newly refurbished in a boutique style- very nice. Now the bad points- We visited this hotel for a couples break for our wedding anniversary and mainly to relax in the Spa... Well I think Spa must of changed its meaning since the last time I visited as the "spa" was full of kids, toddlers and screaming teenagers. It was not relaxing in the slightest... I couldn't even use the jacuzzi as toddlers with no pants on were using it as a splash / pee pool!!! Maybe this hotel should think about refusing under 16s or having an actual kids pool located somewhere else in the building. I even paid for a massage which has the treatment room located above the pool, so all you can here is screaming children.... Far far from relaxing! The room was warm and although we opened the windows it was no help and I hardly slept either night. There was no extractor fan in the bathroom so that just added to the heat of the room. My score is 3/5 and that's only because the food and location were great.

« Would not recommend or return. »

We were staying in the hotel whilst taking part in a swimming event on Lake Windermere. The hotel itself was clean and tidy. It was clear to see it had been extended and updated to a reasonable standard. The spa area in particular was lovely. Our room was clean and modern but the facilities were pretty disappointing. After originally booking a double I called to alter our booking to a family room for 3 adults for an additional charge. The hotel called me on two separate occasions to double check I needed a family room for 3 adults. We arrived to find a double bed and a zed bed.. I was appalled and not what we were expecting at all for the price. In addition we were only provided with towels, mugs and glasses for 2.The zed bed was not designed for an adult.. It was so uncomfortable. Not sure what the extra charge was for? I would have been better off in an arm chair. To top off our experience we were given a room with a hot tub.. just what 3 adults would want .. The hot tub whirled and gurgled all night long keeping us all awake. The room was without air conditioning and was so hot and stuffy. We were torn between boiling in our sleep with the french doors closed or open them and listen to the hot tub all night.. felt like we were being tortured. Andrew the barman was a lovely chap, polite and friendly. The waitress who served us Friday night was also lovely. In general the staff provided impeccable service. It was the staff on reception that really let the hotel down. One receptionist in particular was incredibly hostile and rude. On check out we were provided with bar bills that had never been signed.. one in particular was signed by a stranger and yet the hotel still expected us to pay! They even had the cheek to request payment for the hot tub! I thought they were joking! In summary this hotel is not very good value for money. I would advise any guest to pay as you go to ensure your not paying someone else's bar bill. I feel ripped off.

Meeting friends for a one night stay and found a good deal for B&B. Very close to Lake Windermere and ideal for shops and ferry trips. Welcoming and friendly staff and Hotel clean and fresh. Spa is superb with a great bar and pub alongside. Views from the lounge are fantastic but our room view was over the car park. Very warm when we visited and found rooms too warm and had to leave patio door open to get some ventilation. We would definitely come again as parking good and walk to activities manageable. Relaxing stay and breakfast was very good.

    « Below standard »

The hotel was under renovation. The reception area was quite lovely, so we were even more shoked with our room. Small, and unclean. The carpets had not seen a good hoover in a while. There was a half-smashed biscuit under the bed! The staff at reception was not particularly helpful. Of all we encountered, one was pleasant, the others bland, or somewhat rude.

    « A Return Visit »

Having visited The Burnside at the beginning of its transformation process I thought I had better return for a Bank Holiday break. What an excellent job has been achieved, the Spa was superb - a bottle of bubbly in the pool, Little Romneys served us a delicious lunch, we wandered into Bowness for a stroll by Lake Windermere followed by a romantic evening in our room's hot tub overlooking the lake and the evening was rounded of by an excellent dinner in the restaurant. Throughout the stay the staff were very welcoming and couldn't do enough to make our stay very pleasant. Highly recommended and when the apartments open up I'll be back with the kids.

    « Pleasant Surprise »

Although looking like a fairly standard Lake District hotel from the outside this hotel delivered more than expected. The staff at reception were really friendly and the accommodation was very good having recently been upgraded. The barman is very helpful and displays an attitude not often found at a hotel at this level. This perhaps sounds demeaning and is not meant to be just that his attitude is more 5 star than 4 star. The food in the restaurant was excellent and the service very good. All in all a very good experience.

    « Fantastic! »

We recently stayed at the burnside hotel in bowness, we had looked online beforehand but booked direct as we found the hotel offered a better rate than we found online. Check in was smooth, and we received all the information we needed from Amelia and more! We didn't have breakfast so we can't comment on that. The spa was fantastic, very relaxing and the electronic lockers were certainly helpful. We had a couple of drinks in the hotel bar before venturing into bowness, we were simply blown away by Jordan's customer service. Nothing was too much trouble and he was happy to chat about the consistent improvements the hotel is going under and offer a wonderful insight into the team spirit which is evident throughout the hotel. A special mention to Toma too, who really is a credit to the hotel! We will be back!

Great location .Staff were excellent and really helpful .Family room was excellent with a mezzanine with 2 singles and a double downstairs .The double rooms were also good. Lots of parking ,nice lounges, nice gardens and bar areas. They have a separate spa /swimming pool area .I think this would be my only negative comment .Its a very dark pool which is designed to be a tranquil area .It doesn't quite work as us used by lots of families and so the effect is more like moving round in the dark whilst standing in puddles of water and trying not to think what you are standing in ! Breakfast was buffet style and reasonable . We didn't eat in the hotel . Would definitely visit again .

    « First Class »

We had a first class 2 night stay. The staff were helpful and welcoming. Our room (a family) was first rate, which we could not fault. The Spa and leisure area is superb, as good as any we have had the pleasure to use. The bar staff were warm and friendly, the drink prices were as competitive as the bars in Bowness, which are only a short walk away. The quality of the breakfast produce was excellent with plenty of choice. All in all, very pleased with the hotel, staff, location etc. Will definitely be returning in the future.

Just had 3 days in lakes with last night staying at the burnside hotel and spa , pure luxury , food perfect , we had a package which included Dinner and breakfast and I was a little skeptical thinking the food was going to be the let down , but far from it for the £153 we paid it was money well spent . The room was large and very clean and the spa was out this world , would definitely go back on our next visit

« Very nice hotel for good price »

Very comfortable stay. Staff are helpful lovely location sort walk to pubs and shops of lake windamere. The spa was nice just whats needed after a long hike. Only complaint room can be more up to date however I think they were in the process of doing so unfortunately we didn't get to stay in newly decorated room but not a big deal room was basic. Would recommend if visiting local area

    « Lovely hotel »

We stayed in the Burnside Hotel for one night, before we attended a wedding in another hotel. The hotel itself was beautiful, very clean, and our room was huge! The only downside I would say was that the beds weren't very comfortable. The pillows were hard and we didn't sleep very well. But, the breakfast was nice! And we were able to check in at around 10pm. Would recommend :)

Hotel was stylish and relaxed, plenty of space to sit with a drink in various lounges, hotel staff very friendly and the room was very comfortable, The breakfast was very good but the best part of the hotel is the new spa facilities, fantastic !!

« Do not waste your money »

Bear in mind that this is a £325 per night ?suite? Circumstances were: Hotel chosen for 4 Star status, spa facilities and location. It was explained on reservation that the booking was for a birthday weekend. Dinner was not booked in advance as this is a 4 star hotel. Hotel has no idea about customer service or coherent management and has an obvious purge on costs to the detriment of quality. The following failures cover: Overall quality Restaurant Room facilities Spa facilities Management Attitude to customer service On arrival we asked to book a table for dinner. We were advised the restaurant was full with no availability.` We asked if a very early table might be possible ? around 6pm ? on the basis that it was unlikely to be booked up that early. Receptionist advised she would discuss with the manager. On proceeding to the room we commented that it was unusual that we were not shown to the room, offered any assistance with baggage or told where lifts were. We left the bags in the room and went out for the afternoon.. On return we were told again that there was no possibility of dinner and to try the ?pub? in the hotel grounds attached to the spa. We went to change in preparation for ?dinner?. The room was cold.. I called reception and asked if there was a problem. They asked if the radiators were switched on and I found that they were not. We looked for bottled water in the room. There was none, but a note in the room said that water was available in the bar downstairs. We went to collect some, assuming that this was a cost control measure. We collected 2 bottles which were, to our surprise, charged against the room. There was also of course a ?bar full? of possible drinks available in the bar for purchase. 3 While changing we were surprised to find perhaps the only ?non-mixing? mixer tap in existence where the tap emitted 2 fine jets of water ? one which scalded you and the other which froze you ? in the same spot on the hand. It was unusable and necessitating that a basin be filled to moderate the temperature We went to the ?pub? and found there was plenty of space although the tables were typical round ?pub? furniture so after being seated we moved to the one large table in a brighter spot. The menu was ?snack fare? Immediately the person in charge came to say that we could sit there but if more people came in we would have to move, effectively being more concerned with customers he may have than those he actually had. We left. We then toured the local hotels & restaurants for over 2 hours but found nothing available or acceptable for a birthday dinner, and eventually settled for fish & chips in a local boating club. On return to the hotel neither key functioned, necessitating a return to reception by my husband where it was commented that he must have had the keys next to a mobile phone. Mine had been in my purse and my husband's in his wallet. We were not ?guilty? This conversation was the opportunity to relate the frustration with the performance of the hotel and he recounted the day's events to the receptionist. He explained how the birthday had been a disappointment and the receptionist read from her computer notes that she had taken the booking and that it was noted the stay was for your wife's birthday? During the night the toilet cistern would continue to fill until flushed to halt the flow. Then after emptying it did not refill until more handle manipulation. In the morning we took breakfast in the restaurant when the ?manager? introduced himself and asked for clarification about our complaints and to apologise. We explained the situation regarding our rejection for dinner, the events in the pub and specifically the impact considering it was a birthday occasion. He said that he was sorry & that had we made it known that the event was a birthday they would have done something ?special? as they usually do on such occasions. He then said that he wished we had spoken to him in the afternoon as he was available and could definitely have fitted us in around 6pm without problem So they knew it was birthday event, they had restaurant tables available, they knew we wanted dinner, they ?would check? to see if we could have dinner, we complained at reception late in the evening and the ?manager? is ignorant of everything the following morning. He accepted that there was little now to be done other than apologise so my husband said that they could reduce the bill. He agreed in a manner which seemed to imply ?naturally?. Before checking out, I went into the spa for a treatment which I had also booked on arrival. My husband went to the pool. The changing rooms lacked any seating apart from 2 wicker chairs. 4 After the treatment we went into the jacuzzi which was tepid and when the pumps stopped it was necessary to leave the jacuzzi to go to a switch on the wall 15 feet away to turn it back on. 10 minutes of this tested our patience so we left, to find that the showers in the changing rooms had no soap or shampoo. My husband went to pay the bill and the same receptionist who checked us in simply presented him with the full un-modified invoice. He pointed out that it was incorrect & explained why. She knew nothing of it and looked towards another girl and asked if she knew about it. She said that she did. It is wholly unacceptable that this other person did not intervene at the first instance and take over handling the issue while being clearly in earshot but avoiding involvement. This senior receptionist said that she was indeed aware of the issues and said that under her own authority she was only able to grant a £50 reduction and that she would discuss the matter with her manager the following week to see if a further reduction could be allowed. Given the ineptitude of the organisation we had no faith that anything would actually happen, let alone be investigated and dealt with, so my husband refused to pay more than £150 for the accommodation element which was a fair charge for the service provided. This was not accepted and she said that they already had Visa card details from the reservation and would simply take the money anyway. She then proceeded to require a list of all the events that justified the reduction of more than £50 and after a brief summary of the salient matters, it was pointed out that sufficient issues had already been logged on their internal email as it was referred to in the conversation. She recounted the issues of the dinner reservation, the attitude of the pub staff and the matter of the room heating. That was ?only three? things she said. There was clearly little point in further debate as the hotel is obviously disinterested in its performance as a service provider. She found it highly unusual that one would not book dinner at the time of room reservation. Obviously my hotel experiences are less limited. As the hotel threatened to take payment regardless, a letter was demanded from them to evidence that the excess over the £150 was being taken without agreement The agreed amount was then paid and we left. A few days later the disputed amount was charged against the credit card. Everything about this hotel says it has a business culture problem. Recently acquired by a house builder, there is a ?unit shifting? organisation trying to run a ?service? business, The negative attention to detail, rather than the positive attention, indicates a cost orientation working against the service values espoused.

« Just missing hot water »

A really spacious hotel, both open areas and rooms. Refurbished to a high standard. Staff very friendly and helpful. Interesting menu and very good food, although chef leaves vegetables very crisp so not to everyone's taste. Only disappointment was lack of hot water. Cold shower not appreciated. Bath had safety tap limited to 38 degrees before override, but only tepid water, no matter how long run. Very convenient location in Bowness, and set high giving great views over lake.

« Lovely place to stay. »

Huge regret that we only had one night here. Location couldn't have been better. Hotel staff very pleasant and attentive. Hotel old world comfortable without being tired, if you know what I mean. Breakfast was delicious! And dog friendly so the hound came too! Spa was great but please please turn up the heat in the sauna...... Steam room was brill though. Bowness is great out of season when you can stay in comfort in a hotel like this.

    « Improvements required »

I found all staff helpful and friendly, the "dog friendly" rooms could do with some tweaking, e,g, bowls and dog mats, even some dog treats even if the owners don't use them. Room comfortable, but vary dramatically from room to room. Also, reception gave different information of where breakfast was e.g. set up in a conference room, when it was in the bar dining area. Also we were all charged different room rates even though, a room rate was set for us. As I said lovely hotel, staff friendly and helpful, but some improvements required, my ShihTzu thought it was Shihmazing and loved the ladies on reception.

« A evening away for business purposes »

A really good hotel with a great location and easy walking distance to bowness town. They have a bar and spa in the same building, the bar comfortable and homely and the spa and pool etc looks great although not used as time did not allow, next time hopefully. We dined in the hotel and the food was of good quality, presentation and taste while taking in the views of the grounds.Staff also exceptional. Our room the lake view suite was comfortable and warm with great views of lake windemere(naturally) Only 2 negatives,no iron in the room or ironing board, asked for one at reception and rather embarrassingly had to take it to our room ourselves,I say for a 4star establishment that's a little sinful, plus for a suite and the monies it costs a few glasses in the room(not the bathroom)would be appropriate for the likes of a wee drink wether for water wine or beer etc. Oh yes reception staff very helpful and cheery

    « Disappointed »

Stayed in a 'doggy friendly' room (with a dog) this weekend. Very disappointed in the standard of the room. Very dull, dingy and in desperate need of a makeover. When I mentioned this to reception I was met with a response of "really!" as if I had said something completely outrageous. Don't get me wrong I do understand them not giving dog owners their best rooms but the rooms pictured on their website are most definitely not reflective of the rooms given to dog owners and I think they should. I would not have stayed here had I known what the room was going to be like. It was NOT good value for money. We were put in a different room for breakfast, understandably, but there was no one there to greet us and we had to go looking for someone to ask for tea and toast. I would also suggest the reception staff are given some training on the local area as they were not knowledgeable.

« A beautiful hotel in beautiful surroundings »

My fiancé and I wanted to get away for a couple of nights during a week off from work. We had stayed in Bowness on Windermere before where we stayed in a B&B, but this time we wanted a boutique style hotel which had its own spa facilities. The Burnside Hotel looked stunning in the photos, and it didn't disappoint in real life. The reception area is light and welcoming with friendly and chatty staff. The wall to the left of the desk features a tv with live weather updates for the area, ideal if you are planning to be out and about. Our room (121) was very boutique style and extremely spacious. The bathroom included a large jacuzzi bath, and like the main room was a very decent size, in fact probably bigger than we needed but not going to complain! I think like most rooms we had the usual coffee/tea making facilities, hairdryer and tv and a lovely book on the Lake District to give visitors some ideas of places to visit. One of the main reasons why we chose the hotel was the spa and pool facilities. We booked a full body Hot Lava Shell massage each for our second day. We had an hour each in the morning and was very much needed for both of us! The masseuse was lovely and we felt she really listened to what we needed working on. The pool area is dowsed in dramatic blue lighting with an impressive chandelier in the middle. The room is dark, but light enough so that you can see and feel relaxed (the pool has lights in it too) and some very impressive Buddha statues create the impression of a Thai or Indian style spa. We did say that it would have been nice to have some music to listen to whilst in the pool area/jacuzzis. Some classical or meditation music/sounds would have added to the ambience. Drinks are available to buy and drink around the pool and are charged to your room, which you pay for when you leave. The gym wasn't open whilst we were staying, but we weren't bothered as we go to the gym when we are at home and it was nice to have a break. I'm sure it will look amazing when it is finished. We didn't eat breakfast/dinner so we can't really comment on what these were like, but the menus looked like they catered to different sorts of pallets. One of the main reasons we didn't opt for the breakfast was the price. At £12 we felt we could find something at a better price in the centre of Bowness. Maybe next time we might treat ourselves... I will also say that the house keeping team we met were very friendly and polite. Thank you to the Burnside Hotel for making our stay extremely pleasurable. We will be back for sure...

    « Excellent spa »

We were actually residents at another nearby hotel and fortunately for us had access to use the spa facilities, I'm glad the wife had pre booked a couple of treatments as the weather was glorious and if she hadn't we probably wouldn't have used it, the wife was very happy with her treatments, lucky for me and one other person everyone else was out enjoying the sunshine, I found it so peaceful and relaxing having almost exclusive use of the facilities which I found outstanding. The only thing I didn't use was the cold pludge pool but everything else was first class, there's a button behind the fountain in the swimming pool which says please press, just press it, changing rooms if a little on the small side were very clean. A throughly excellent experience we had. Speaking to a very polite and helpful lad Andy in the bar after and he was explaining how things had changed for the good at the hotel and that the new revamped gym would be open in a couple of weeks time to go along with the excellent spa. My experience in the spa was outstanding helped by the fantastic weather would definitely use again.

« Fantastic Hotel and staff »

We had another very enjoyable stay for the jazz weekend. The staff were all extremely helpful and friendly, with no request too much trouble. The food was exceptionally good, in the lovely surroundings of the new restaurant. The Spa Suite is a perfect venue for live music and the Spa is relaxing, indulgent and atmospheric. Looking forward to our next break here.

Went on a 2 night break with our kids and grandkids . The family room was amazing with mezzanine floor for kids with their beds and own television . Our room was lovely with a partial lake view . The swimming pool and spa was fantastic, the best we've been in, with a great bar where they let us have football on . The proximity of the hotel to the town was great, all round great stay, well done all at burns ide .

« Spa and lunch... okay »

We were staying at the nearby Cranleigh and has use of the spa facilities. It was easter weekend. And raining! We had lunch at the bar area adjacent to the spa, which was fine, but high prices for the quality of the food, and the waiting staff appeared to be high school kids on holidays. (Giggling and uninterested). Pool area interesting and nice but dark. Changing area was dank and dirty. Only one toilet which was blocked and the tap was stuck on. Digital lockers were helpful. Maybe it fits the Burnside hotel but it was a definite step down from the Cranleigh.

« Excellent hotel and spa »

We stayed at this hotel for a last minute relaxing break. The hotel was so lovely we ended up booking a second night. For the first night,we stayed in a Snug room which was beautifully decorated. The second night we had a double standard room, which wasnt as modern but still really comfortable and definitely room with a fab view. Hotel staff were lovely and the spa is amazing-pool side bar os a great idea! It is in a perfect location with a 5minute walk to Bowness town centre. Hotel bar also does lovely good. Definitely would stay here again-very highly recommended!

« Amazing!!! Can't wait to go back!!! »

Staff were really polite and soo helpful nothing was to much trouble for them. The spa was amazing!!! Heated pool, 2 jacuzzis, sauna, steam room, cold plunge pool and pool side bar. Really nice calm atmosphere! Breakfast was really good!! It was buffet style, hot and cold, full English, cereals, yogurts, fruits, pastries - something for everyone. Most tables had nice views of the gardens and the lake. The location is perfect just a 2 min walk down a hill to the lake side. We had room 102 which had a view of the lake and a hot tub on the balcony! Would definitely reccomend!!! Can't wait to go back!!!!

    « Just the Job »

Spent four nights at Burnside Hotel in April. The hotel and grounds are very well presented and the room was extremely comfortable and very clean. A nice, soft king size bed made for a great, comfortable nights sleep. The en suite bathroom was large enough and had a great shower which lured you in to staying in there that bit longer. The breakfast is self service but was certainly fresh and even the fried eggs were still perfectly cooked despite being kept in the warmer. The breakfast choice is extensive and plentiful. The evening menu is perhaps some what limited and a little pricey but as there are so many restaurants in Bowness and the Burnside is only a short stroll from the town (5 mins) we did not eat in the hotel and therefore cannot comment on the food quality. Despite being fairly busy we were met with the best of service be it at reception or at breakfast. The location overlooking the lake and proximity to the town is great.

This weekend was booked late last year as a Christmas present for ourselves our family and their partners. The hotel has everything you could wish for to make it the most enjoyable weekend break that it was. A big thank you to all the staff at the Burnside. We will definitely be back again.

    « One night stay »

One night stay while passing thru the Lake District. They are about to refurbish the place so it's a bit outdated at the moment, but comfortable beds, clean rooms and a short walk to restaurants so we were very happy here. Didn't get to try out the spa as we arrived late after spending the day at Brockhole visitors centre. Lovely breakfast in the morning. Friendly staff. Happy kids = happy parents ??

« Fantastic location, lovely 'dog-friendly' hotel, will definitely stay here again! »

Stayed here for two nights with another couple and our two Mini Schnauzers. The hotel is located up a hill approx 5 mins walk from Lake Windermere, great location and free parking! The hotel room itself was nothing special but it was clean and the bed was comfortable. The lounge areas were lovely with comfy sofas and the staff were very friendly and professional. The spa was great, I liked the dim lighting in there which made it very relaxing. We had a meal in the bar area which was delicious and although there were renovations taking place it did not bother us at all. We loved the fact that it was so dog-friendly, we would definitely recommend this hotel and would not hesitate to book again when we return to the Lake District.

« V.Good Hotel, Great Location, Good Value »

V.Good hotel we've stayed in before & so no hesitation in returning. What we did notice on this latest visit however was the breakfast buffet frequently needed replenished and feel that perhaps a larger buffet area with bigger food trays might avoid or lessen the queue when the hotel is busy. This is simply an observation though and not a complaint as the food itself has always been very good. The hotel was very busy & parking space was in high demand although there is an overflow area to the side/rear of the hotel. Since our last visit the hotel now has a lovely new spa and Romney's Bistro & Bar (separate from the hotel) served excellent food - the fish, chips & mushy peas were fab. We also dined in the hotel restaurant and again the food was very good and reasonably priced. Staff are friendly, welcoming and helpful - they are a credit to the hotel's management. Our room was comfortable, clean and had a fantastic view across the lake. Good wi-fi connection throughout our stay. The hotel's location is very good and within walking distance (3-5mins) of Bowness shops and the various boat trips. We would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and we look forward to our next visit.

Very nice spacious room with comfortable bed/bedding in a quiet location. Went there for the weekend with a group of friends and we ate dinner in the restaurant both nights. The food was excellent and the staff very helpful. They did a good packed lunch too though they struggled to meet our group's timetable! My only gripe was that it was very expensive.

    « Fabulous Stay »

We recently stayed at this hotel and it was amazing!! From the moment we walked in, the reception staff, the bar staff, the cleaners all the staff were fabulous and went out of their way to make sure our stay was wonderful. Burnside Spa is something else!! I have never seen anything like this, just stunning and so unique.. I mean when can you have a glass of wine in a hot tub?! I can't understand the negative reviews for this hotel, we stayed in a lower level room, it was delightful and even had a patio where we could sit out and watch the beautiful sunset. We've even booked for Newyear, I just can't wait to return! See you all soon. Emma (Room 129)

    « Lovely relaxing weekend »

Very friendly staff, who couldn't do enough for you. Nice warm, clean, comfortable, ground floor room, with I would say a recently refurbished bathroom and a view of the lake. The ground floor room was ideal as we have a small dog (not the one that was barking in the previous review as we would not allow her to bark and disturb anyone). The staff made arrangements for us to have our breakfast in a separate lounge so that we could have our dog with us and not inconvenience other residents. The hotel was very busy last night as they had a very large group of people in residence and for a black tie dinner, but the staff still looked after us and the other residents just as attentively. We would definitely recommend the Burnside and make a return visit especially as the hotel is clearly undergoing refurbishment and improvement. Despite this the hotel was very clean and comfortable.

I expected more for the price. I stayed for a couple of nights and the mattress in my room was really poor...completely gone. The restaurant and breakfast was good but the service in Romneys bar was atrocious. They advertise real ale, of which they had one and it was off for the two days I was there!!! We were also so offended by the barman's attitude that we left.

« Not good for us »

Chose this hotel on how the hotel looked on their website. Was celebrating my partners 40th along with my 18 month old daughter. The room we was given was in a basement and was next to a room that had a barking dog. The room was nothing like the pictures. It was uninviting tired and not what i was expecting there was wallpaper missing off the wall biro scribble on the radiator and mould around the double doors :( the travel cot provided was inadequate and although complaining nothing much could be done the head of cleaning tried her best to make the travel cot comfortable for my daughter but it wasnt so we had to push the double and single bed together and all sleep in one big bed, not the greatest bight sleep ive had. The guests were rude. At breakfast a man shouted oi to my daughter, keep the noise down???!!!! Not the hotels fault but still contributed to not a nice stay. Shame really as bowness was lovely. The hotel and staff did nothing to make our stay special even though we were celebrating a special birthday. Unwelcoming, uninviting hotel which wasnt for us. Very dissappointed unfortunately.

    « Birthday celebration »

Stayed here last week for 5 nights to celebrate my birthday with family and friends. This was a return visit and was upgraded to a room with hot tub (102). All the staff were friendly and helpful - thanks to Iva and Meiric and spacial thanks to Choaney who goes out of her way to make every guest makes feel special. As previous reviews there were refurbishments underway, however this did not effect our stay. The pool was an added bonus. Evening meals were of a high standard and plenty of choice at the buffet breakfast with additional options for extras on request. Asa doggy friendly hotel a dedicated dog bin would be a bonus. See you all New Year xx

« Nice view of Windermere from our room »

A first visit for us to the Burnside, the hotel is undergoing a bit of a transformation with ongoing work evident, so will give it the benefit of the doubt! Our room 351 had a nice view of the mere from, but had a rather dated feel to it however there was new looking kingsize bed that was comfortable also a new replacement window so maybe we were in one of the rooms yet to be given a full makeover. The room was clean and tidy enough except the cramped bathroom where black spots of mould on the ceiling above the bath and toilet were quite evident there was an extractor fan but sadly it didn't work this was pointed out to reception on our departure. Wifi was good, we never tried the pool out. The food in the very busy restaurant was good overall starter of pig cheek nice, main course of Lamb and potatoes let down by the lamb being overcooked and not served hot enough,(couldn't catch the waiting on staffs eye as the were that busy on the night we stayed) dessert of sticky toffee pudding was very good. My wife really enjoyed her fried goats cheese balls and Fillet steak also really liked her Panna cotta. The bar and lounge areas are nice and also the Barman was very good in the hotel bar, pleasant engaging and efficient. Breakfast was a buffet arrangement with hot food causing a bit of a queue at times as it was being replenished to keep it as fresh as possible, there was a decent choice of items and good quality overall.

    « Perfect Break! »

Could not fault the hotel at all, recently renovated to a high standard, our room on third floor was lovely and spacious and spotless with lovely views over the snow capped mountains! The spa is amazing, loved the mood lighting and modern decor, it is also spotlessly clean too, the pool was lovely and warm, don't know why some saying it was cold, the only time it felt colder was after being in the sauna/steam rooms, so maybe this is why. We did not eat in the hotel itself but did have a meal in Romneys which was excellent and would recommend a visit as it is a lovely little snug. Overall, we will definitely return to the Burnside as it is the best place we have stayed in on our visits to the Lakes.

    « Great Spa »

I spent one night here with my partner as a gift for us both. Lovely welcome and room was perfect. The new spa is brilliant, clean and a perfect relaxing environment to unwind and chill out. Our booking included evening meal which in terms of food quality was brilliant especially the 10oz rib eye however the lack of any atmosphere made it an awkward experience as felt you had to whisper to each other, which with the addition of the slightly rude male waiter put a bit of a dampener on what would have been a really nice evening. Overall nice clean hotel, possibly better to eat out and use the excellent spa facilities if you are a younger couple.

« Nice hotel, poor details »

We stayed on a Friday and Saturday evening and overall had a nice break. The hotel itself is ideally located, close to the lake and has fabulous views over the lake and surrounding mountains. We were very pleased with our room, however we were on the third floor and had virtually no water pressure at all, meaning that there was no hot water available in the sink and the shower was a trickle. We reported this at reception and were told that the hotel was aware of the problem and would send maintenance. At this point, I pointed out that they had not asked our room number? Fair enough, when we returned to the room in the evening, the shower was working a little better but there was still no hot running water to the sink. This remained the same for the remainder of our stay. Our stay included dinner on the first evening, which was really lovely, but very disappointingly was heavily surcharged for steak and again for a sauce to accompany it, meaning that our included meal actually cost over £40 [including 1 drink each]. Breakfast was extensive in choice, but again it was such a shame that the detail was missed as everything was luke warm at best. Overall, this is a lovely hotel, but is it 4 star, I would question this in the delivery rather than the potential.

Excellent rooms and great food. The restaurant was undergoing some refurbishment but you wouldn't notice as the staff were superb. Nothing was a problem and the food was delicious. The cocktail bar has excellent views over the lake.

« Beautiful Spa and Romneys snug »

We regularly go to Romneys and found out how they had taken over the spa at the Burnside we went and had a lovely meal here staff were very friendly and went to use the spa after it's £10 for non residents for a day pass. The spa itself it beautifully decorated and designed however the hot tubs aren't hot and unfortunately when we went it was overrun with children and there was over 50+ adults and children round the pool area which ruined the experience for us as we weren't able to swim in the pool. The staff shouldn't have given us day passes when it's clearly at over capacity, queuing to use a changing room before and after doesn't give the best impression. I would highly recommend visiting the spa but plan when you go carefully as it is a small spa area, for an extra £1 you can watch a film in the private 18 seater cinema to which has 2 films shown daily.

    « Lovely overnight stay »

My partner took me to this hotel for a overnight stay for my birthday. It was absolutely lovely! Friendly staff who offered to show us to our room and take up our luggage to our room. The room was brilliant, loads of space for our things, big television, tea and coffee faculties. We loved the spar. Was very clean and I loved the indoor pool bar which you could put drinks on a tab and pay later on which www handy! The only thing to fault was the bars shut very early but a gentleman working there explained that someone was ill and was unable to keep the bar open. We also had very noisy neighbours who thought it was a good idea to scream, shout and sing at 1am. I rang reception and they dealt with it, which was excellent. The breakfast was faultless, offered tea/coffee when sat down and white/brown toast. Then all you can eat full English breakfast which was gorgeous. Overall we loved our stay and will definitely be back :-)

    « Good but overpriced »

Four of us stayed here to celebrate a birthday. We booked a deal which included breakfast & a three course dinner with canapes & coffee. The hotel is lovely, stylish & comfortable. Staff are efficient, though not particularly welcoming, though they did ensure that we were happy with our room choice. I was very disappointed with dinner. Choice was quite limited, with far too many overpriced food supplements. For instance, one expects to pay a supplement for steak dishes, but not usually an additional £11.95 per person. And with such a limited pudding menu on the night we were there, a supplement of £7 for a few slivers of cheese & a small glass of port is certainly surprising. The prices would be acceptable if the food was first class. It is not. I ordered the lamb, & specified that I would like it well done. I anticipated a hearty plate of local lamb with crispy fat. I was brought two tiny cutlets fashionably balanced together, & served pink, as Chef likes them. In contrast, my guest who ordered her fillet medium rare, was given a well done steak. This was brought to the attention of our waiter, who showed not the slightest interest. It was removed from our bill on request, but only the supplement, not the cost. There is a good & extensive wine list, but be prepared to pay more than usual for your favourite wines. All in all, a disappointing dinner, with none of the usual 4* flair, & exceptionally meagre portions, of the type that necessitates a fight over the complimentary biscuits back in the room, despite food supplements of £40.35, and a bar bill of £83.35. Breakfast was better. A wide choice of good quality food served by efficient & friendly staff, the only faults being that it was rather cold, and, as at dinner, there was little offered in way of bread, and the fried eggs were tired & overcooked, rather like joke shop eggs. At checkout, our guests were too polite to complain, but I queried the many food supplements, pointing out that we had already paid for four five course dinners, and the restaurant manager was summoned to deal with me. He removed one of the supplements from the bill, but rather ungraciously, & I felt slightly embarrassed having to explain the problem at a busy reception. I can recommend this hotel for its location, rooms & housekeeping. I can not recommend the restaurant for those of us with good Yorkshire appetites.

    « A lovely Mother's Day Treat! »

I've just come back from a night away with my mum and sister to celebrate Mother's Day. It took a while for me to choose the perfect hotel and after reading some mixed reviews about Burnside I didn't know whether I'd made the right decision. But I definitely did! All I can say is wow! The hi lights: 1) I booked the Burnside through an offer which included dinner, bed and breakfast. Usually the dinner in the these types of deals I've experienced before are pretty average and very limited. Not at the Burnside! I had scallops, duck breast and sticky toffee pudding which were all out of this world in taste and quality. 2) The restaurant has breath taking views. 3) Breakfast had a lot of choice and after sampling pretty much a bit of everything between the three of us all was delicious. 4) Our family room was ideal: Pretty much two separate bed areas separated by a curtain, a lounge area with comfy chairs and view of the lake. 5) All staff were friendly and helpful. 6) The spa was one of the best I've experienced in the Lakes with relaxing lighting and bar area. 7) There was a cinema (which although I didn't experience would have been handy if I'd taken my little ones) 8) I couldn't have asked for a better location! About a five minute walk from the lake / centre of Bowness. The car park at the hotel is free (unlike some other hotels I've experienced) so not only did I save on hotel parking but also parking in the centre which can be hard and expensive. The lo lights (being picky) 1) The bath panel in our family room was rotten on one side and needs replacing to make the room perfect. 2) More lockers are needed in the spa block. We had to put our stuff in an 'out of order' locker which was ok for us because we had no valuables. 3) At breakfast although tables were free next to the windows with amazing views, guests (including us) were directed to tables at the back of the restaurant rather than set up tables again. I understand this but as a guest one of the reasons you go to the Lakes is to experience the beauty of scenery and it was just a shame that we couldn't experience this on a lovely clear day but for me a wall instead (especially when you can see tables empty!)

    « Distinctly average, not 4 star »

Stayed this weekend. This hotel is vastly overpriced for what it is. Room was basic, bed comfortable. Had a small balcony. The shower was really poor. It was a cheap shower with hardly any pressure. When I've stayed in 4 star hotels before I've always had a decent, hot power shower! Also vastly overpriced was tariff for our dog at £10 per night. Basically you are paying for the location, free wifi and a glammed up swimming pool, with mood lighting!!

    « Lovely friendly hotel »

We spent 4 nights here at the end of February. Our room was lovely and spacious ground floor room in the extension. We stayed BBEM and breakfast and the evening meals were excellent. Hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The only odd thing was the beauty room treatments there was no real check in it was just at the Romney bar also here to sign in and pick up your towels for the pool. I had a massage which was very good. Tip: bring flip flops for the pool area as the area around the pool is very rough on the feet. There is building works going on but this rarely disturbed us, only downside was the gym was not in use. The bar and dining area were very comfortable, with lots of areas to sit and chill. Thank you to all staff for making this trip problem free. Carrie n Kev

    « Great end-of-winter break »

We had a great-value DB&B break for four of us last Sunday/Monday. The hotel has views over the lake, and we had a very comfortable room with a lake-view balcony. The staff are all friendly and efficient, and the general atmosphere is spacious and relaxed. None of us made use of the pool or spa, but we did enjoy the bar. Dinner was OK, apart from one disappointing dish and the fact that there was very little choice when it came to desserts. There was an extensive wine list and the wines we chose were pretty good. Breakfast was very good indeed.

« Great location for a relaxing spa hotel »

Stayed for a long weekend. Located at bottom end of Bowness and 5 minute walk from Windemere. Our standard room looked recently renovated and was fine, with balcony and well looked after. Spa is a separate building, ideal for an hours relaxation with Sauna, steam room and small pool - not somewhere to spend an afternoon. Breakfast was pretty good on the days we were there. Hotel is close to Bowness centre with access to many very good local restaurants. Also 5 minutes walk from lake and ferry service for trips around the lake. Only slight moans would be poor wifi, rooms a little hot and can be noisy in parts,

« Nice hotel, clean, good condition, nice rooms, ok to good food. »

This was my second stay, each time was 3 days. The spa has been redesigned since the photos, the white walls are gone and replaced with rough stone matching the rest. The hotel is well located, a 5 min walk into bowness. The food is variable depending on what you choose from the menu, but there are many great places to eat in bowness and winderemere, Francine's is worthy of a mention.

« Beautiful Hotel with Excellent Facilities »

We stayed last weekend and everything about the hotel was excellent. The room was beautiful with some really nice decorative touches (we loved the leather armchairs) and the bathroom was clean & modern with a really good shower which was always hot enough. The spa is really nicely done and very relaxing, although it's probably better to go later in the day as children are only allowed until 7.30 and as it's not that big they do tend to spoil the ambience. The bar is accessible from the spa which is a big plus - a glass of wine in the hot tub went down very well! The on site pub (part of the spa building) is excellent, we ate there on the first night and the meals were delicious... the chocolate cake was among the best I've ever eaten! Breakfast was also really nice and both breakfast rooms have great views. All of the staff we encountered were really friendly and helpful. I have been recommending this hotel to everyone and we will definitely be back!

« Great hotel and beautiful spa »

We stayed here in February for two nights over the half term break. We had a family suite which was newly refurbished and had great views over Bowness and of Lake Windermere. The reception staff were really helpful and always on hand when needed. The hotel itself is only a short 5/6 minutes walk from the shops and pubs of Bowness and the lake. The spa was fantastic and our one year old daughter enjoyed the bubbles in the pool and the coloured lights. The bar is well stocked too, if you like real ale I recommend Swan Blonde from the nearby brewery, great after a long day walking in the cold. Breakfast was ok although we found better value in Bowness but the room service meals we had were brilliant!

« Neat and tidy hotel near Lake Windermere »

Just come back from three nights staying at the Burnside Hotel and would stay there again. Pros - + Overall clean and tidy + Staff friendly + Not very busy even in school holidays in Winter + Lovely spa including sauna, steam room, two jacuzzis + Great location, quiete and 5 mins walk to the banks of Lake Windermere and all the shops, bars, cafes and restaurants in Bowness + family friendly, kids won't get bored + Nice bathroom with bath Cons - - The main pool was pretty chilly, they could do with making it a bit warmer - The gym was not ready, despite me calling in advance and asking if it was. I was told on the phone it was ready, when I got to the hotel it was still being refurbished - We stayed on the second floor in a family room and we heard drilling every morning, not sure what it was for but parts of the hotel seem like they're being renovated - Our phone wasn't working on the first night, it was fixed by the next day though - Overall, some of the bedroom furniture looks a bit tired and dated - Be prepared to pay £4 a pint and £11+ for a main meal in the restaurants - free wi-fi but very very patchy, kept on dropping off, but when connected it was quick - No fridge/mini-bar in the room - A few hairs in the bed sheets but nothing major - Taps in the bathroom are really poor, looks like a mixer but has two feeds for hot and cold water in one tap so you can't get a nice temperature, it will either be scalding hot or very cold

    « V.Ades »

We booked a room with a view in advance for Valentine's weekend. I rang ahead and checked that the room came with a view. On arrival the hotel which boasts 4 * looked impressive. To our surprise the room had twin beds and was comparable to a tired B&B. Rang reception and was told I had booked that option on Booking. Com & there were no other rooms available that weekend. Disappointed with the standard of it also as the rest of the hotel was undergoing refurbishment. The upside was pleasant staff and the room did have a nice view but the twin room was not what we expected for a romantic break! Check the room description.... As I certainly didn't think I'd booked a twin.

    « Another great break »

We have been staying at the Burnside for several years as we love the area. The hotel has under taken a lot of improvements in the last eighteen months. The facilities are first class. We stayed with dinner bed and breakfast. The food was excellent with nice size portions a good choice and wonderful flavours. The staff are all friendly and helpful with nothing to much trouble. We have booked to return for Christmas

    « Beautiful hotel »

The hotel staff are extremely welcoming and happy to assist. The room was lovely and very clean. The Romney's bar is very pleasant and the barman was helpful and quick to serve. Breakfast was another matter. There appeared to be a large party of two long tables and in order to get to the cooked breakfast, we had to queue behind them, very close to them. If I had been eating at their table, I would not have liked it. We waited some time for bacon and sausages to arrive, and they were not very hot when they did. There were no poached eggs left and the scrambled eggs were very 'wet' and under cooked. The fried eggs looked raw on top, so I left the egg option. To be honest, breakfast was the only disappointing aspect of our stay and I would stay again. Maybe the hotel being full put a strain on the kitchen, but this shouldn't really have to be my concern. Staff - first rate; room - excellent. Lovely place.

    « Valentine Weekend Stay »

We stayed here on Saturday the 13th February. The bite, is very well kept and clean. The reception staff are lovely and willing to help you with anything you need. We stayed on the second floor of the hotel in a double room which was lovely, plenty of room even a little seating area and tele as well as your bed. Bathroom was spacious and very clean. We stayed bed breakfast and evening meal. The breakfast is brilliant plenty of choice all very nicely cooked toast brought to your table. The evening meal was very nice not a lot of choice for people who like simpler food but still enough. We opted for the fillet steak which from previous stays we knew there would be a surcharge for but couldn't see it anywhere on the menu that said this. The meal was lovely. The beds are every comfortable. We visited the spa which has been refurbished and it is brilliant sauna and steam room two jacuzzi baths a pool and a plunge pool all at your fingertips. There are options for treatments but we didn't choose to have any. OverLl we really like this hotel however on check out we went to pay the extra surcharge of the fillet steak and wash coked with a £41.50 bill this did include a glass of wine and a beer, we found this expensive as we had a,ready paid for an evening meal and didn't expect that amount. However we paid and left and unfortunately this has left a slight bitter feeling about the hotel as paying £221 for the room( no lake view) bed and breakfast and evening meal was enough without adding an extra £42 on. I would recommend the hotel to everyone just wat h out for the added extras on your bill.

Had a lovely stay at the Burnside. Staff were friendly and we enjoyed the spa and atmosphere. Our room felt clean and freshly decorated and the breakfast was good, although they are redecorating so the breakfast room layout isn't perfect. They do inform you of this in the welcome letter. Also enjoyed a nice treatment at the spa. A comfortable stay. Hopefully will return in the future.

    « Family Break »

We've stayed in the cottages in the grounds every February for the last 20+ years as timeShare owners. Love it here. This is the first year we've experienced the spa upgrade. It was closed last year when we were here and we had to use the Old England. Love the new spa but really disappointed there are only 3 cubicles in the ladies changing rooms and no other changing space. Prices in the spa bar have jumped up too. Saw a poor lady pay £8.40 for a double amaretto and diet coke.

    « Almost perfect! »

I cannot understand some of these reviews! We stayed at the Burnside last weekend and the only grumble I could possibly have was that the breakfast room is being refurbished and the alternative room can get busy if you go at the most popular times. However the hotel do make you aware of that in a welcoming letter. On arrival the hotel looks attractive - and that's a feat in itself in miserable February! Reception area are shiny clean and the welcome from reception staff was excellent. Our room , one reserved for dog owners, was modern, convenient for the outside door(!) and again sparkly clean. Ok, a bit small, but we were here to look at the Lakes not the wallpaper! Food was excellent , maybe a bit pricey for dinner, but the quality and the service made up for that. And we were paying less than £200 for 2 nights B &B with 1 dinner at a lovely hotel in a great location. Staff deserve a special mention . Very friendly, very efficient. Special thanks to the night porter who rescued my husband after a doggie need to 'go outside' at 3:00am resulted in my husband being locked out! We will certainly return, with or without dog! Thank you.

« Not the best stay in the lakes »

We have stayed at numerous hotels in the lakes over the years and we're looking for a new experience. To keep it brief, hotel grounds and exterior are shabby, we had to change rooms as it smelt of disinfectant, leisure spa facilities (especially changing rooms) were not clean and in need of revamp, beer wasn't good ( I tried 3 different pints!) the breakfast was appalling - I waited 20 minutes for smoked haddock and was shocked when it arrived. I received a piece of dried out fish about 3 inches square, it was a joke. On the plus side, evening meal was ok and staff were friendly. For what we paid, there are far better experiences to be had, just hope that it gets sorted as it is in a great spot.

    « Excellent »

Staff and location spot on. Facilities exceptional! Drinks and food superb. The additional building with the bar and spa and pool area makes it. What a bar, what a pool and what a weekend! Loved it. Only complaint was our room was quite dated

    « Romantic stay »

Stayed at the weekend for my wifes 50th. Could not have been better. Room fantastic with comfy bed, large bathroom with bath and separate shower. Two nice comfy chairs and a large tv. All modern with high ceilings etc. Staff all excellent. Hot tub nice n warm and great lake view from room. Spa was very very busy this time but cant blame hotel for that. Bar in spa a nice change from hotel inside bar. Three course meal deal was good and food very good. Only think I could say is that they should give you an accompaniment of veg with the main courses. Not usual to not get veg with meals. We loved our stay and will stay again.

« Burnside Spa for local day pass »

Really nice venue with a £10 day pass. Just wish the steam room had better seating as the steam cam right up through the bench! Ow! But great experience loved the cold jacuzzi and watching folks trying to get in thinking it was hot haha! Lots of couples about as it is a romantic setting!

    2
    « Complicated Dining »

The food was great but you need to tell them what you want one by one in order to meet your needs. If they just serve international dish that everyone likes, that would be a lot more easier compared to chef coming to you asking you what you want.

    « Lovely hotel »

We stayed last week and got a twin room plus evening dinner (4 courses) and all you could eat buffet breakfast for £108. Worked out as 54 each. Room had a fabulous view of the lake. Comfy clean rooms and the spa was lovely too. The shower in the room on 2nd floor didn't have much water pressure. The hotel management need to see to this. The evening dinner menu was over-fussy and too 'complex'. Ask the chef to make you something if the menu doesn't suit your taste

    « Excellent night away! »

My boyfriend treated me to the night away for my birthday & this is one of the nicest hotels I've stayed in! It was easy check in on arrival and the front desk staff were friendly, welcoming and helpful. The rooms were a good size, comfortable bed and good bathroom - everything was clean. The spa was lovely! We took advantage of this and stayed in their for a good couple of hours! It's so relaxing!! We didn't eat in the hotel so I can't comment on the food as we went into the little town/village and went to one of the local restaurants and it was fab! Good food. Overall, this was a lovely experience and we are already planning our second visit here.

    « Relaxation »

Very friendly and welcoming staff, a good all-round relaxing experience enjoyed with friends for a couple of nights.Wish we had stayed longer. Position of hotel first class as a gentle walk into Bowness is just a few minutes stroll for shopping, cafes or getting a boat across the lake.

    « Fabulous retreat »

Booked last minute and got a good deal. Not visited before but will definitely go again. Friendly welcome. We were early but room available and so we entered a well presented twin room with balcony and a bit of a lake view. Had a look around hotel and Spa. Spa looked amazing with its dark mood lighting .Something to look forward to. After a spot of lunch in town back to room and then a bit of spa time. The spa had limited amount of lockers so some visitors left without. Pool and jacuzzi x 2 were a little bit on the cold side. Made worse by the temperature outside x A very snowy end to the day and a lovely relax and drink in the many seating areas around the bar .. All staff very friendly. Breakfast excellent. Very good choice. A little gem ...loved it and want to go back and soon. Thank you x x

    « Awesome! »

Just returned from a one night stay at the burnside hotel, which was absolutely fabulous. We arrived in the snow which made it very picturesque, and the hotel is very close to the centre of Bowness. The room we had (120) was billed as a standard double but it was massive with plenty of storage, a dressing area, lounge area and bug bathroom. The decor is lovely, Hotel very clean, and the breakfast was fab. We got a table with a great view across the lake, and had a beautifully cooked breakfast, staff couldn't do enough. Check in and out were swift and staff friendly.didnt get chance to try the other facilities but will definitely return to try these out next time. All in all a wonderful hotel in a great location, a perfect mini break xx

    « What an improvement ! »

We have stayed regularly over the years and until recent times always thoroughly enjoyed our stays. Latterly though it was starting to get "a little tired" and in need of some TLC. Now under new ownership the Hotel is being thoroughly updated/renovated and whilst still a "work in progress" the improvements are so noticeable and welcome. The Spa in particular is fabulous ! The Restaurants are apparently next to be worked on and then the West wing extension. We look forward to our next visit in the hope that the further changes will be as equally obvious

    « New year package 2015 »

Spent Christmas 2014 here with some of our family - see my previous review. Returned for New Year celebrations with other members of our family and had a fabulous time. We had a room with a hot tub which we used in the pouring rain - perfect. Our stay from beginning to end was fabulous, cannot speak highly enough of every member of staff. Hoping to return for either Christmas or New year this year and have actually booked the same room for a break in August. Well done and thanks to all

Stayed with family at hotel for 1 night. Pool/Spa nice (very small). Treatment excellent, therapist very nice and friendly. Rooms very good- clean and comfortable. Disabled room for family member very good. Bathroom excellent. (For Wheelchair user). Evening meal very good indeed. Breakfast good selection (all buffet except special orders (kippers etc)). Short stroll down a hill to town (able bodied). All staff very friendly and a great short stay.

« Lovely New Years break »

Visited the Burnside with my wife and stayed NYE/NYD and had a really enjoyable time in this lovely hotel. On arrival, we attended the Spa and had a sports massage which was truly excellent (a big thank you to Natasha). The spa facilities are very good which makes for a relaxing hour or two. The spa is also attached to Romleys bar and so we couldn't resist a drink or two on the way out. We booked a simple 'cosy room' which was very small but nicely decorated and the bed was comfy. We spent minimal time in the room so it was ideal for us but you will need a larger room if you are planning any time in there. Our room was also refurbished and this is being replicated throughout the hotel following new owners taking over last year. The staff were very helpful and friendly and are happy to provide guidance on local walks, best pubs etc. etc. We left our phone charger in the room on vacating and they offered to post it back for us. The hotel itself is in a great spot and just a few minutes walk to the centre of Bowness and the shores of Lake Windermere and there's plenty of walking routes nearby. The hotel is decent value for money, very clean and presentable with good staff and would recommend a stay here.

    « Super Christmas trip »

This hotel has special memories as we got married here back in 2012 and decided to have a short break over the Christmas period. It was nice to see it had been improved since our last visit especially the swimming pool as it was definitely needed and the bar is good positive too. We had a great time with our 2 daughters who especially liked the buffet breakfast. The staff are very friendly and nothing was too much for them. The only thing I would comment on is the lack of hangers in the family room we was in as we only had 4 for a family of 4. Other than that a great hotel that we will come back to time and time again for the special memories it has.

in General the hotel was very good but was disappointed when calling for room service and was advised to call back on 30 minutes as they were busy. The room was rather basic with a faulty tv remote control and also no tea or coffee facilities in the room for £250 per night bb you would expect a bit more. Michael

« Hotel is great but restaurant hit and miss. »

We popped over for a Christmas break and the hotel looked great and very festive. Our room was perfect and reception staff were friendly and helpful as ever. The breakfast is usually a buffet but I'm assuming due to it been a weekday and low occupancy we had to order it instead. The quality of the food was fine but everything was at different temperatures which ranged from piping got for the beans and tomato to luke warm to the bacon and egg. The breakfast the following day was the buffet and couldn't be faulted. If I was staying midweek again I would find out if the breakfast was a buffet or to order. Having dealt with the restaurant manager on a previous stay I felt it pointless complaining as he has little in the way of customer service. All in all the Burnside is a great hotel with excellent facilities, its just the restaurant that needs a little work.

    « Lovely hotel »

Went for a weekend recently Saturday till Monday, we had a lovely stay. Our room had a lake view, was very spacious and comfortable. The Saturday evening there was a Christmas party night which included a 5 course meal and disco. The food was delicious and a bargain for £29.95 each. Breakfast was very good, buffet style help yourself to as much as you want. The spa area was very relaxing, we had a swim, jacuzzi and steam. The hotel is walking distance from the town, however it is up a steep hill which wasn't a problem for us but maybe for some people. We really enjoyed our stay here and will stay here again.

Lovely friendly greeting from reception staff, even took the time to show us around. Our room was wonderful, modern, new furnishings very clean and comfortable. Recommend a visit to the spa and pool it was amazing We stayed DBB and the food and service were exceptional. Great value for money. We booked through their own website as it was better value than booking.com. Location was perfect very close to everything Bowness on Windermere has to offer. We will be back. Highly recommend!

« Very disappointing - Never actually got there as had to cancel - will never book again! »

The Burnside has always been one of my favourite hotels where we have stayed on several occasions over the years. However, I will never revisit again. I booked a family room for myself, husband and 12 year old daughter in May 2016 but, due to unforeseen circumstances, rang up today (16-12-15) to change the date. I was greeted by a friendly young lady who told me that this could be done, however, the reservation was only showing up for 2 adults even though my confirmation showed 2 x adults and 1 x child on a dinner bed and breakfast rate. I was told it was a fault on their system that had happened before and that she would have to advise her manager of this. She eventually came back to me and said that her Manager had agreed to upgrade our room to a family room at no charge but I would have to pay extra for my daughters breakfast and dinner - I was then given the additional charges I would have to pay. I advised that I had made the booking in good faith and wasn't prepared to pay any more money bearing in my mind I had a confirmation email confirming 2 x adults and 1 x child. I then asked for a refund and was told that I couldn't have one as my booking had been booked on a special deal with no cancellation facility. At this point, I was very disappointed and annoyed - so after yet another another word with her manager (who insidently I offered to speak to - but didn't want to speak to me and was very happy to let a young girl deal with an issue they knew had happened before), I was told that they would process my cancellation.

« Nice hotel; service could improve »

Upon arriving at the hotel (about midnight) the check-in desk was closed. Granted they had a sign saying dial 0 or call the mobile number on the sign; however, there was no internal phone and the mobile number was unreachable. After wondering round for 15 minutes, I eventually found someone but the guy didn't leave my room account 'open' for charging food/drink which was an inconvenience. Other than that, it was a great hotel. Nice location and my room was overlooking Lake Windermere. I would stay again but I hope the nighttime service is better organised next time; although, I must say the daytime staff were friendly and accommodating!

    « Great »

Super place. Staff friendly and helpful. Definitely return. Can not fault anything. Top quality room. Just a joy. Don't consider anywhere else. My wife enjoyed it immensely. Great chain. Maybe the room was slightly cold at some points but I guess that's because it's winter. Still enjoyed or comfy bed. I hope you all enjoy your stays at this best Western. I love the lakes

    « So welcoming »

Fabulous staff, child friendly, fabulous food and good drink selection. Loved the Spa and cinema room, staff in the pool area were fantastic, especially Andy, thanks!! The Pool area and cinema kept our playful children entertained whilst we were trying to sort our flood damaged cars and insurance and transport home. Staff were fantastic, we were very well looked after. Lovely family room, spotless! Highly recommend. Will be visiting this hotel when we are back in Windermere.

« Great weekend despite the challenging weather »

We have just returned from a great weekend away at The Burnside, despite being in the middle of 'Storm Desmond'. We originally planned to get out and about and visit some Christmas markets but the major flooding across the region saw us stay very local and make good use of the fantastic spa facilities. Our room was large, spacious and very comfortable - I can't remember the last time we've had such a quiet hotel room! On the second night due to the awful weather we went across to Romneys, the bar attached to the Spa and had some lovely tapas for tea, rather than brave the elements on the short walk into town. The staff over the stay were fantastic despite being short handed due to employees unable to get to work. They didn't stop all weekend and were constantly cheerful and helpful, advising what roads were open when we left to help us get home safely. We'll definitely be back here again at some point soon.

« The hotel does not deliver quality in so many ways »

I spent last weekend at the Burnside Hotel and paid more than usually do as a treat. I was expected some luxury having paid over £200 for bed & breakfast and left feeling very dissapointed. When I arrived on the Friday lunchtime my first shock was that their was builders on site carrying out renovations and they where working on the room two rooms away from mine. Oh what Joy!!!!! I was never informed about this at the time of booking or in any subsequent emails to the hotel prior to my arrival. As the builders where not leaving until around 3 pm, I dropped off my luggage and headed for the bar for a drink and some lunch. The staff where busy putting up Christmas decorations which again was inconvenient at Friday lunchtime and surely should have been done early morning before guests where up and about. The bar only had one real ale which was OK and I ordered soup of the day and a sandwich. The soup was cold and the sandwich (ham and cheese on a brown bloomer) was poor. The bread wasn't very fresh and just a small amount of grated cheese. At £16 including the drink I expected far more quality. The bar are has the atmosphere of a doctor's waiting room and is very old fashioned. My room was OK but nothing special. It had the world's smallest balcony which looked out onto a car park and the leisure centre, so no view. Pointless really, but it served my purpose for having a cigarette. Also the patio doors had seen better days and where difficult to close. The bathroom was nice, but small and it had the noisiest extractor fan that came on automatically with the light. In fact I could hear next door's fan every time someone went to the bathroom. The doors slammed shut so this was a constant source of disturbance often late at night or early morning. The cleaners where also noisy in the mornings talking to one another. The breakfast where pretty good on the whole. I had to wait forever to be allocated my table as there where no staff at the entrance to the restaurant. Tea and toast was served at the table and everything else was self service buffet style. I left my table for a minute to get som more eggs and on return the waiter had cleared my table and had to bring evrything back....and no he wasn't called Manuel. After my poor lunch experience I decided not to eat at the hotel in the evening. I did, however pop into the Snug bar on the Sunday lunchtime before I left. This bizarrely is also the entrance to the pool area. Although it's called the Snug I found it also lacked the atmosphere and cosyness of a pub and it was cold. I ordered a pint and a pizza. The pizza was very ordinary and was probably cooked from frozen. Again at £10.99 it did not represent value for money or quality in any way. The pub also had no Sky Sports which was the case throughout the hotel. I had called reception on the Saturday and requested a late checkout which was arranged for 12 rather than the usual 11 am. As I was packing the phone rang at 11.30 and it was a very surly women asking why I hadn't checked out yet. They had no record of the late checkout request. To add insult to injury after taking my holdall and some bags to my car, on returning to the room for my other case my key card had been de-activated and I couldn't open the door. After trailing to reception I was given another key card without apology by the miserable girl on reception. In fact none of the staff in the hotel seemed happy in their work. I did enjoy my weekend in Bowness despite the hotel, but will never return to this hotel, which was way overpriced for the total lack of quality that they delivered.

« Fantastic stay with family »

Location of this hotel is fantastic to visit Windermere and the local towns. Stayed here for 2 nights with family. Reception staff give you a warm welcome, efficient check in and all the information you need for your stay. The hotel is modern, warm and relaxing. Rooms are decent size, very clean and comfortable. Very large TV was a bonus. Our room also had a balcony over looking a nice view. The only thing I would mention is that the shower isn't very powerful. Housekeeping are also very friendly and do a fantastic job on the rooms. We had an evening meal in the Bistro which was great. Plenty of space to relax in the lounges and chill out with a drink. The spa is fantastic, with 2 hot tubs, large pool, sauna, mood lighting and more. Please pass my thanks to all the team as we really enjoyed our stay and will defiantly return again. And also to mention the price per night was excellent at £62.

« Review of the bars only. »

While staying nearby we popped in here for a drink simply because it was chucking it down and we didn't fancy getting soaked walking into town. The first thing to note is that the hotel has two bars. The first, which is just past reception, is a typical hotel bar with all the style and ambience of drinking in a corridor. It is clearly designed to cater for pre-dinner drinks as well as serving residents who are using the lounges. The bar itself only has two tables and it's not really a place for a cosy session. The other bar, Romney's, is situated in the spa complex and is clearly designed to be more like a pub. As hotel bars go it's not too bad, but again the main problem is a lack of atmosphere. I actually have a theory that the only hotel bars that have any ambience are ones that are used by local residents as their local pub. There were clearly no locals in when we visited and the atmosphere was sadly lacking. They also do bar food here so we took the opportunity of having a takeaway pizza, which was decidedly ordinary, with a "bready" base that is probably bought ready made, and a topping that seemed to owe more to Cheddar than Mozzarella. We would possibly use this place again - but only if it was chucking it down and we couldn't be bothered finding a proper pub.

« Potentially Great but let down in a few areas »

We stayed here for a weekend break, on arrival it looks great, nice modern reception and friendly staff. Clearly refurbed front of house to a high standard. The spa area is great and my wife had a couple of treatments that she said were really good, but the management a timing etc was chaotic, times wrong, not enough staff etc. Our room was large and comfortable but it felt a bit old fashioned with the furniture that was in there, so although comfortable it meet the expectations set up by reception. The restaurant was a real let down, with seriously odd food combinations that the chef didn't seem capable of delivering and the vegetarian options my wife chose were extremely poor. Breakfast service was a buffet which they seemed to struggle to keep filled and the service was rather abrupt, my tea bags were literally thrown onto the table. Could be a lot better with some effort

« Ok but could be better »

The main areas of the hotel are lovely. They have clearly been refurbished to a high standard. I don't think the refurbishment works had quite reached our room. The floor was filthy and the bathroom very outdated. The toilet moved every time we sat on it and shook the hotel each time it was flushed. There is clearly a "family" wing where they put you if you bring children and we were in it. Throughout the night I could hear children crying or people moving about above me as the walls are so thin. The hotel is in a perfect location for visiting Bowness.

« Amazing meal. Immaculate room. New bathroom. »

Hotel room was absolutely immaculate. Brand new bathroom, Meal was amazing - felt like Michelin star. Steak incredible. It appeared that the restaurant attracted people from all around and not just hotel guests - in a good way.

« Burnside Hotel at Bowness on Windermere »

This hotel has been thoroughly refurbished and now has a Spa and Pool which is very relaxing with calm blue lighting, 2 x Jacuzzi - Steam room & Sauna . There is also a bar / bistro attached to the pool area. The bedrooms are excellent and the staff are very welcoming , professional and knowledgeable. This is a great location for exploring the lakes and easy to walk into Bowness to take a boat ride or go shopping, parking on site is also good. Choice of restaurants in the hotel and the food is good.

« Great location, facilities and rooms »

This hotel is within walking distance of Bowness, though a bit steep on the way back for pushchairs/wheelchairs. It has great facilities with swimming pool, jaquzzi, spa and bar and snooker room and badminton\\squash courts in a seperate building with large screen TV's as well so means the noise is not in the main building. Lovely hotel with great views over Windermere lake from some rooms. Lovely bar and sitting rooms and restaurant with views too. Can be busy in school holidays due to the great facilities. Food in restaurant was average last time we went, but that was a while ago. We would go back and have been here a few times. Rooms clean and god size, some with lake views. I do highly recommend this hotel.

    4
    « Good position »

Our allocated room was nice but we upgraded at an extra charge for a very nice room with a view of the lake. Nice to stay in a hotel where you are on the outskirts, so quite but within easy walking distance of the town for restaurants. We would stay again.

    « Dissapointing »

There is no question, the location is excellent and the entrance/lobby area looked new and updated! Unfortunately that is where the praise ends. I stayed in this hotel when it was at its best and was sincerely dissapointed at its current condition. The carpet in our first floor room was not very clean, in fact just a simple scrubbing brush would have removed some of the spots from the carpet. I maybe wrong, but I would guess the room had not been redecorated since the early 70's. There were holes in the wall where either a picture or the tv had once hung. The bed was hard and extremely uncomfortable. Upon arrival I asked about afternoon tea and was initially told that I should have ordered it 24 hours before. I explained that was not mentioned in my conversation with the hotel at the time of booking, nor is it noted on the website. The staff was, however accommodating and tea was provided. I guess I was mistaken in assuming Best Western would maintain a certain standard in the UK.

    « Lovely few days »

Lovely hotel, near to the lake and town, the reception staff were very helpful along with a wonderful tasty breakfast with lots of choice, had a measl in the resturant wich was very good, but bit disappointed that we were sat in rather a large lounge on our own and not in the annex where everyone else was, maybe you have to request this!! We had a large bedroom room with a very large bathroom with a big corner bath and large shower cubicle & a great shower. Overall we had a wonderful few days in a lovely friendly hotel.

    « Burnside Hotel »

Nice hotel - has a small cinema which does 1 child showing and I adult -( they could do with doing different films on consecutive nights though) Breakfast excellent. Can eat onsite at Romneys bar - would do more business there if there were more tables(maybe extend upstairs?) as there are only 8-9 tables, but there is some refurb work going on as well. Would def stay here again. Only a short walk into town as well which was convenient.

    « 2 days to remember »

From every aspect, this hotel surpassed our expectations. The hotel catered for dogs so our lab came with us. He's a big boy but that did not concern the staff, they were all dog lovers and he immediately warmed to them when they produced dog treats for him! The customer service from the reception staff to the maids was exemplary. The reception staff went that extra mile when we asked for advice where to walk, maps and plenty of advice really was appreciated. My son who was 10 weeks got his first swim at the spa. Truly it was a sensory delight for him with all the colours, water features, he loved it. My husband loved the lounge pool and the steam room. The price for the hotel represented great value and we will be booking agin with the hotel soon. It gave a great introduction to the Lake District as this was our first trip there. Truly wonderful experience. Also food at romneys.......awesome xx

« Great hotel and spa break »

A lovely experience at the Burnside hotel from start to finish. Spent 4 days here in October and would certainly return. We had a family room with balcony. Rooms & en-suite of a good size and was perfect for us...only slight gripe - could do with a blind up at the bathroom window! The breakfast was spot-on and plenty of items to choose from and replenished often. It was very busy, so think that is a good indication of it's popularity. The staff we spoke to were very relaxed & friendly and there was plenty of staff around, so no scrimping on staff to safe wages. The cherry on the cake though is the great spa area. A few things were out, like the gym/sauna/extra jacuzzi which makes a 4* rather than a 5* because I doubt it was cheaper for these reasons BUT that said you won't be disappointed I'm sure if you stay here!

    « Fabulous family break »

Stayed at this hotel recently and enjoyed a very special family break. Staff were most welcoming in reception and booking in was extremely efficient. Refurbished rooms are beautiful with all the facilities needed free Wi-fi which although sometimes difficult was usually available. No problems with parking despite the hotel being full. The modern pool was wonderful for all the family. Food was generally very good though struggled a little with our vegetarian diet particularly on the first day despite giving them plenty of notice. Having said that the staff again were pleasant and friendly and tried to cater for our needs. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable experience in a beautiful hotel in a perfect location.

« Bragging rights for the view »

This was the second time we stayed here 1st was a few years ago on a groupon voucher for 1 night called the hotel to enquire about staying another and they gave us another night for same price without the presseco lol. totally overwhelmed by the hotel and use of spa next door a real nice weekend that was and so close to xmas had massive tree next to stairs so on our next visit as a surprise for my partner i booked in for 2 nights valentine weekend and splashed out on the penthouse got a good deal at the time i thought the views are out of this world well of the lake, room was looking tired but was assured that the hotel was on a refirb what has prompted me on this review noticing the people are still experiencing builders i know it was february we came and do hope the room we had has been updated ask i had a list of faults to send them a letter never got round to it, a couple pointers were really bad smell from shower drain and hydro bath had to be switch on and off room out side the bathroom as controls did not work on the bath, tv's were not tuned in and had real trouble sort them out. the room itself was split level and if refirbed to good standard is the best room in the hotel own balcony at the top of hotel and again view to die for

    « Great stay »

Stayed here end of October, room size very big and staff helpful. Spa area and external pub/bar is a nice touch and there is extensive car parking. Really good location. Slightly put out by having to pay £3.50 for a scrambled egg and smoked salmon muffin -I can't eat fried food and this was considerably smaller than the full English which was included. Would recommend they stop charging for this sort of thing as is a bit off putting as a guest. However all in all very nice and would visit again.

« Pleasant stay, slightly overpriced »

We stayed at the burnside hotel for my girlfriends birthday, lovely surroundings, Windermere holds timeless features, the hotel it's self, nice welcoming, great building with traditional antique style big sofas, premium touch, the room itself was nice however expected more for the price, scuffs on the wall, quite basic, not one of the renovated rooms as per requested ? Wi-fi poor also, the food was nice but nothing to write home about, quite limited options on the menu, nice bar area, friendly attentive staff all round, could probably pay a little extra for something to match the price tag, overall a nice experience however.

« Not really what's shown in the advertising but ok »

We visited the hotel and spa this week expecting from the pictures a really swanky hotel and we have to say the entrance and communal areas are new and nice however there are issues. We had tried to book spa treatments before we arrived but there were no appointments available? If there is such demand perhaps provide more treatment times? Firstly the wifi didn't work despite several assurances it was fixed and when the manager came to our room he simply said it was broke and he couldn't fix it and went without apology. Looking at other reviews and talking to other guests the wifi never works and if your advertising wifi surely it should be available? The room- well we can't say it was luxurious and certainly didn't live up to the pictures we saw on the website. Inside the walls and gloss paintwork were yellow and the furniture basic , the mattress on the bed was collapsed on one side and needed replacing and we didn't even have the throw over the bottom of the bed just a white duvet and the room itself was small. We noticed the bath panel had clearly been taken off at some point but it wasn't until we had a shower and the bath filled up we noticed that the plug hole was closed and the switch to open it didn't work so during our stay the bath simply got fuller of cold water we couldn't allow to drain away? Looks like this had been an issue before. The menu on the £150 dinner bed and breakfast was limited and to have any of the nicer dishes there was a supplement to pay. On a fillet steak the supplement was £11.95 and when it came there was no vegetables at all and when we asked why not we were told it didn't come with any? The staff were friendly and the hotel is warm with good parking. We didn't get to go in the pool or jacuzzi but that area looks new in a separate building across the car park and on a par with the new reception area and bar. The room we stayed in was on a parr with travel lodge accommodation but the rest of the hotel is quite nice but not worth the price tag we paid but in a great location and could very easily be so much better.

« Lovely hotel miserable bar man »

Lovely hotel in a great position. Wonderfull breakfast with plenty of choice. Check in at reception pleasant experience friendly staff. Room clean not massive but everything of a good standard. Spa area very nice but pool and jacuzzi too cold it was also very busy but we new it would be as school holidays so couldn't be helped. Bar man Finn really helpfull friendly which couldn't be said for other barmen think his mane chris? Not sure as he had no name badge found him very abrupt and unhelpful . Overall a lovely break at a lovely hotel in a great setting.

    « Reliable »

Good room Staff as good as ever - bathroom feeble shower and smelled of damp. Food ok in new pub area, pool cold as were pool showers. Pool too busy due to other non hotel guests. Restaurant menu same for past 2 years needs a facelift. Adrian and Jordan as professional and welcoming as always. Kids loved the cinema. Great idea for more rooms but what about car parking, it was full all the time as it is. Might have been good for on site builders to ask us to move our car before they started throwing rubble and debris around, our carless covered in cement dust which wasn't happy about having just had it cleaned and then another fee to clean it on arriving home.

    « Another great stay! »

Myself, my fiancé and our two year old daughter stayed for two nights in a family room. On arrival in Bowness we took a wrong turn up a lane and found ourselves having to turn the car round as we missed the entrance to the hotel but in doing so we were basically threatened by the man who owns Lingwood Apartments at the top of this lane which left me quite shaken so be warned in case this happens to you! Not a pleasant man at all. Once at the hotel I did mention this situation to the reception staff and they assured us that we would not experience anything like that here and they were right as everyone was lovely! After a quick check in we were allocated the same room we had last time back in April. The room was nice but I was hoping it may have been refurbished like the rest of the hotel - it wasn't as it was exactly the same! The new addition of the spa really made our stay better than last time, it's a real plus point and my two year old loved it! The bar was also really nice and cosy and although we didn't watch a film we did have a peek in the small cinema upstairs which again looked fab! We dined in the bar area on our second night and found the prices reasonable and the service from the young man outstanding. He was the same man on reception last time we stayed and his manner was great and really put us at ease as dining with a two year old can be a challenge! Breakfast was nice and plentiful. There is building work going on but it did not bother us at all. Thanks for a lovely stay!

    « Nice pleasant stay »

We arrived for few days at this hotel spa. Reception staff nice with sense of humour. Room was ok. Nothing too special but we didn't pay for luxury. We wasn't too fussed as long as the bed was comfy and everything worked which it did. We wasn't planning on staying in our room much as we like to get out and about but I know the room does matter to some. We dined in the restaurant first evening and the waitress we had was lovely and again waiter had sense of humour. Food was lovely also. Breakfast we paid for separately as had booked room only. First morning was quite nice and the same lovely waitress but 2nd night breakfast wasn't as nice but it did seem busier with people. We didn't eat much so felt £12pp was quite expensive for a breakfast we didn't really enjoy. The following day we ate out instead. Angel inn was nice for breakfast if anyone wants to eat breakfast out and worked out £13 for both of us. As we crammed so much in so little time it was the last day we checked out the spa. The guy in the pub was the only staff we crossed who was impolite and quite rude with us. As many we was unsure where we was going for the spa. We went in and looked round and saw the sign so headed over to the door. He asked what we was doing? So we said and he didn't tell us nicely we have to sign in (like we was meant to know) he was rude about it. He asked if we had our room card so we showed him card and said room number and he told us off and said bring the slip next time. (Again we didn't know) then he gave us our towels. We was quite put out by him and glad it was our last day as wouldn't have wanted to use it again. Anyway the spa is lovely. Very relaxing setting. Done out very nice. Other than the guy in the pub/spa. An enjoyable stay at burnside.

« Spoilt by the builders »

We stayed here for 2 nights (Thurs & Fri) we were looking forward to a relaxing couple of days away. Instead every time we walked out of our room we were met by builders in the corridor. On Friday morning we were woken by drilling and banging just before 8am, evidently they were fitting a new bathroom in the room above us. The lift outside our room was used as a service lift by the builder also. Just after 9am they set the fire alarm off which was silenced after a few seconds. On a lunch and after working hours the builders sat outside the spa/bar area which we found quite intimidating and put us off going to look in. Aside from all this the hotel was nice and the reception area and ground floor was furnished and finished nicely. The communal areas upstairs were a little shabby. The spa was really nice and relaxing and the hotel is a 5 minute walk from the boat landings area. Overall it has potential but a very disappointing experience for us.

    « Friendly & welcoming »

Needing a family room late in the day - I popped in expecting at least one or two reluctant gestures but no...reception was friendly , helpful and genuinely seemed happy to help. (This in contrast to the 'Old England' at the lakeside earlier in the day whose reception manner was aloof and unappealing). The Spa is lovely! Parking was easy. The room had an attic mezzanine which was brilliant for our teenage son. The only downside is that I would guess that someone has been through the hotel on an economy drive eg toilet paper , napkins , breakfast goods all basic and not 4 star quality. Provide decent coffee , decent OJ , quality sausages and I will happily sing your praises.

« Great stay with my girlfriend. »

We thought it was a great location, rooms are big and the breakfast was lovely. Walking distance to good restaurants, the lake and shops. We found the staff to be nice and friendly. Food good and room a large size which was nicely decorated.

« good choice and good value »

we were 2 couples on a short break and both of us would recommend this hotel , we had a very enjoyable stay all our needs were met ,good food, friendly service excellent pool etc pleasant surroundings and comfortable rooms the only slight niggle was the lack of shelf space in the bathroom and lighting in the bedroom which made it difficult to read and the breakfast room was too dark but thats just my opinion and the only criticism, I would happily return as the hotel fulfilled and exceeded our expectations

    « A wonderful weekend »

It's a fair few years since I spent a weekend in the Lakes and the decision to choose the Burnside at Bowness as a base was taken by family members who planned a double birthday celebration. It proved to be a fairly good choice. The hotel is currently undergoing some renovation and we were fortunate in that we were allocated a room looking towards the lake that had been updated to a pretty high standard. Other members of the party were not, I'm advised, as lucky. The Burnside is certainly well-placed for those who want to enjoy the delights of Windermere though for those with health problems and on foot, the Burnside might prove a bit of a challenge in that the access driveway is rather steep. The staff are most helpful, the public rooms ideal for relaxing, there's plenty of parking and the food was much better than we have experienced recently at other establishments. There was just one hiccup during our stay. Despite careful planning to ensure that everything went smoothly on the night of our 12-strong party, the restaurant team managed to set a table for eleven. We had to wait in the restaurant until the matter was rectified - which was a bit of an embarrassment since party organisers went to great lengths to ensure a problem-free evening.

« Brilliant Hotel, shame about the service. »

I stayed here recently with my partner and our boy to celebrate my 30th and my boy's 6th birthday, along with friends and family. All together there were 9 of us staying and another 3 joined us for meals in the hotel. Sadly, I have to leave a mixed review of the Burnside. First, the good points: I cannot fault the hotel itself, our room was one of the ones which have been renovated and it was beautifully done. The décor of communal areas of the hotel is smart, modern and, in my opinion ? very well executed. There's plenty of space to relax and the sofas and other seating are clean, comfy and welcoming. The pool and Spa were clean, tidy, and very well designed and built. The water was hot and clean and the staff were friendly enough. The staff in the hotel were friendly too and helped us when we needed them. There was also a super cute hotel dog which wandered round (the hotel is dog friendly I believe) and we loved that, especially at breakfast time when it wandered down to the entrance of the restaurant to seemingly check on all the diners ? but never came near the food or diners. (superbly trained perhaps!?) Sadly, here come the bad points: For a four star hotel the standard of service was not good enough. The staff were unable to get our son's order right on both nights despite us writing down our pre-order at breakfast on the morning, leading to an upset birthday boy. When we complained they quickly removed the food and returned it amended to suit our request. The example that stands out is scraping the cheese off a cheeseburger instead of replacing it with a plain burger as ordered / requested. On the second night, despite having pre-ordered food and confirming the logistics with the staff on several occasions, the booked table was one cover short when our guests arrived. Perhaps linked to this ? one of the starters also didn't arrive and had to be chased. The bedside lamp in our little boy's room had a plug which wasn't standard size and didn't fit into the wall socket. Meaning he was left without a night light - not the end of the world, but still, why leave the lamp in the room (unplugged!) if it isn't fit for purpose?! (Pics attached) We're not the type of people to have a tantrum about these things, instead we mentioned them at checkout and were given a curt ?sorry?, but nothing more, and certainly nothing sincere. Perhaps most worryingly though is that the hotel has subsequently charged at least one of the party an additional £85 for drinks after we had paid the bill and checked out the hotel. There seemed to be confusion over the cost of drinks from the bar during our stay, possibly due to the fact that we weren't served by the same person twice. We had charged drinks to our room and so each morning I made a point of talking to reception and paid the tab for the drinks the night before. I would suggest that if you have stayed here recently ? you check your bank statements!

« Perfect for our family reunion »

Being the organiser of our yearly family get-together, I can say my whole experience in dealing with this hotel was excellent. From my initial contact with Chonie on Reception to the evening meal for 13 of us on the Saturday night the circumstances could not have been bettered. The hotel is a 5 minute walk down to Bowness - the rooms were absolutely fine, choices at breakfast for hot and cold food excellent and all the staff were so friendly and couldn't have been more helpful - and the hotel was at full capacity the 2 nights we were there so they were kept very busy. . I personally didn't use the pool but others did and had no complaints. Having phoned 12 hotels in the Lake District to get information for our stay I am so glad we stayed at the Burnside. Definitely good value for money. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and hopefully may return myself one day.

    « Lovely relaxing break »

Went up here with my husband daughter and partner and granddaughter and grandson. Had a lovely relaxing weekend; did the usual trip on the Lake, visited Peter a Rabbit shop and the Beautrix Potter museum and thoroughly enjoyed it. The hotel was set in lovely surroundings. The spa pool was fantastic and the children loved it. Would definitely recommend it .

    « A lovely hotel for a birthday treat »

We stayed for 2 nights and upgraded to a junior suite with private hot tub. The room was very well appointed having been recently refurbished. It was a comfortable room and the hot tub was a lovely treat with great views over to Lake Windermere. The staff in the hotel were welcoming and friendly, offering assistance with restaurant bookings. We didnt eat in the hotel but the buffet cooked breakfast was tasty and fresh. The hotel spa was also refurbished and was modern, clean and a great place to relax. The hotel was a short walk into Bowness where there are plenty of quaint little shops, and an abundance of cafes and restaurants. Beautiful place to visit, will definitely be returning.

    « Burnside Hotel, Bowness »

This is a fantastic gem of a hotel. It is situated less than 5 minutes walk from the centre of Bowness. Currently undergoing a full refurb (although you would not know as it is being done discretely) the reception and pool area have been completed first along with a few rooms. The pool is amazing for adults and kids alike with Jacuzzi bubbles in the centre of the pool. My 11 year old loved it. The sauna and steam rooms are all brand new. Romneys bar is great (part of the pool area) and the service is very good although they could do with a few more larger options on tap - same as the hotel would be good. Certainly recommend it over the B&Bs in the area as the facilities are great.

« Lovely location for a family gathering »

We booked three rooms for our visit for a family gathering. The rooms were lovely, quiet and comfortable, and the staff very helpful. The breakfast was delicious Within a short walk was Lake Windermere. We took a launch to Ambleside which was a great way to travel, as the weather was beautiful. From the pier at Ambleside, we took an eco-friendly bus into the centre, which is about one mile away. In all, it was a very successful visit, taking in beautiful scenery, with very good accommodation.

    « Gem of a find »

Just booked our stay the evening before arrival. Reception very helpful when I rang to enquire. Hotel really lovely, room good even though it was the last one. A couple easy chairs in the room would have been better. Ate in twice which was excellent, breakfasts delicious. Staff all very helpful and attentive. Spa, pool fantastic! Will stay again, thanks!

    « A Lovely Stay »

A great location opposite Lake Windermere and a short stroll into Bowness make this such a convenient and appealling hotel. Very comfortable and clean rooms, friendly staff and excellent food on offer throughout made our stay very enjoyable. This hotel has undergone a a significant upgrade since our last stay and is much improved. We had 2 rooms - one at the front which had a great view of the Lake and one at the back which overlooked the woodland. The room at the back was quieter, but both rooms had great bathrooms, obviously newly fitted. We would definitley stay again.

    « Gem in the Lake's, Stayed 10th -12th oct »

Stayed for a couple of nights on our way further south, found this hotel via google earth whilst researching the area, What find! Check in very quick, room good (Family room) everything you'd expect. Staff all very friendly and polite. ate a couple of times in the bar at the spa which was very good, spa looked great although didn't use. Pool table and cinema above the spa (Great idea). Great couple of nights and couldn't ask for more

    « Friendly hotel »

Have just spent 4 nights at the Burnside Hotel. We have stayed here before but it has now been taken over by Best Western. The hotel is going through refurbishments and they are making a wonderful job of it. The decor throughout is first class. Very good breakfast. Location of hotel excellent - just a short walk to the town and ferry port. Staff friendly and helpful. On a personal level, although the pool area has been refurbished to a very high standard it seemed more like a fun pool than a swimming pool, but the families staying were obviously enjoying this. We would definitely return.

    « super overnight stay »

Hotel is in a good position near to the lake and a five minute stroll to the village. All members of staff were efficient and friendly and there was a good choice of hot and cold food on the breakfasrpt buffet. The highlight however was our evening meal which was just superb--- beautifully cooked and presented --- absolutely delicious. Just sorry we could only stay for the one night.

« Pool was cold and the staff were noisy »

The hotel has a great location, great room and great looking spa but the pool and jacuzzi were cold and we kept getting woken up in the morning by the very noisy staff. At one point I thought someone was banging on our door but when I got up there was no one there. The hotel looks great but for the amount we paid, and from the noise and bad nights sleep I would not stay again.

    « Excellent...as always »

A two night weekend stay that was just brilliant. We had a fantastic room, with a separate space for our eight year old. We booked DBB for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed the three course dinner in the restaurant, although I think our daughter would prefer the more casual bar area for eating, or even the new pub. The pub was cute and served great coffee as well as beer! The newly refurbed pool area is brilliant and it was very good to see the staff telling the children who were jumping off the spa area to pack it in. We have booked again for Christmas time and can't wait to go back.

    « Total shock »

Stayed at Burnside Hotel in Windemere UK while on a Great Britain by Rail tour. The hotel and setting were everything we could have wanted. Close proximity to the downtown area, the lake etc. chose to dine in that night at the pub on the property. Meal was OK. What I feel must be mentioned is that during the night, in the dark, I made a trip to the bathroom. I lurched into the bathroom and hit the toilet seat with my backside quite hard. The toilet seat lid cracked in two with a loud noise. The next day As we were Checking out, I informed the front desk of what had happened. I was told there would probably be a charge to replace the LID. Startled, my wife and I ate breakfast and I then returned to the desk to verify what I had heard. I mentioned that anyone reading Tripadvisor would be surprised.,the woman told me words to,the effect that she wasn't worried about what,I,wrote on TripAdvisor. I was told, that if Imhad broken the lid at home,it would have to be replaced at my expense. Realizing no impact had been made as well,as no inquiring as to how I was after this mishap, we left. I dutifully reported this Conversation to our travel agent who was surprised at the Hotel's position. NB: this was a good hotel, I just feel the manager's response was totally inappropriate. I realize she will, probably respond to this comment and wouldn't blame her,I guess. I just want to say that after decades of traveling the globe I have never received a comment from any staff as cold as this was. This wasn't a touring rock group, just a 67 year old guy with a,walking stick

    « Lovely hotel and spa..well worth a visit »

The Spa building is very quirky and stands out straight away as being cozy yet modern. The spa itself is beautiful with lovely lighting and a very high standard finish. The bar staff in the spa could be a little more enthusiastic with their service, however the girls on reception we couldn't fault. They were very friendly and even welcomed our little dog with a treat and enthusiasm! Our room was clean and we had a beautiful balcony with a view. We will definitely be returning

    « Nice little hotle »

Nice little hotel, offering a good bed and breakfast. Nice easy check in, decent amount of parking spaces. Rooms are a little on the small side and slightly dated. Breakfast really good and decent on site bar too. About 5 mins walk to main area of bowness.

    « Very comfortable,stylish accommodation »

I stayed at this hotel with a small group of American visitors, I was their Tour Guide. We had a very warm welcome at reception and the easy access doorway was wonderful for those with mobility issues and those with heavy suitcases. The rooms are very comfortable. Dinner was delicious served by a cheer team of staff. Breakfast was buffet style but also really delicious. The dining rooms are bright with lovely views over the grounds and the bar and lounge areas are really comfortable furnished with big chunky sofas and chairs. If the weather is fine, a lovely sheltered patio area provides great views down to the lake. There is a pool/spa area and small cinema, which we did not have time to enjoy. Although not necessary on this trip, the hotel is Dog Friendly too. An excellent base to explore the Lake District, with great staff, comfortable rooms and delicious food. Enjoy!

    « Great New Spa »

Stayed here for 2 nights recently. Fantastic leisure facilities and a cosy bar adjacent that served some good food. Not exactly tapas as stated but tasty. The hotel itself is well appointed with a modern reception but a more traditional bar/restaurant area, but the very recently refurbished spa made this hotel stand out. We had a lake view and these rooms appeared to be larger than other, similar priced hotels we had stayed in. If you want to venture a little further afield then Bowness is a 5 minute walk away with a wider selection of restaurants.

« room was excellent, but service really dissapointing »

the room we had was superb but the meal we had on the evening was very dissapointing mainly the service, arrived on time but was told to sit in the bar area for 20 mins, then given a menu and asked to order, all before getting to our table, when we were seated we walked right past the open dining area and shoved into a dingy corner all on our own. We paid for a cheeseboard supplement when we received 3 pieces of cheese and a plate of grapes? for a special occasion we felt very dissapointed, The staff on the evening restaurant were also on in the morning felt they were rude and obnoxious to say the least. £25 for a bottle of wine which would be approx £4 in sainsburys, Shame because the pool area and staff on reception were excellent
