    « Beautiful building »

    Built in 1828, the Royal Victoria Hotel is a lovely living reminder of the elegance of a by-gone era. When you walk through the front doors, you are immediately transported in time. The staff are all very friendly and it is a delightful experience to sit by the window in the piano bar and look out over the English Channel.

    « Victorian comfort »

    A lovely quiet stay in Victorian splendour. Positives - Reception staff greeted us very warmly. The restaurant staff were very helpful and service was very good. The bedroom was massive with a comfortable large double. The evening meal was cooked and served well plus was not over priced. Breakfast choice good, plenty of it and not rushed. Not having to book out of the room until 11a.m. meant a nice lie in. Negatives - although a bit picky still worth a mention; Some of the furniture had seen better days. Padding on the tables at mealtimes meant an uneven surface and we had to be careful where we put our glasses and cups. Some of the walls in the bedroom had very bad patches of stains/damp/marks (not really sure what they were). The curtains were very hard to pull and didn't keep all the light out of the room. Would suggest although quiet, booking a room away from the promenade due to traffic noise early in the morning. Out of season, I personally would not take babies/toddlers/young children as very quiet and most of the guests were mature & senior citizens. Overall a very nice hotel with some splendid ornaments and decorations inside, especially the open staircase between the ground floor and first floor. Excellent sea views and would book in again.

    « A lovely Victorian Hotel, good in all ways. »

    A lovely find, not at all what I was expecting. Large Victorian imposing with loads of nice internal features. Very quiet, very comfortable and a very good value breakfast. They also accept dogs. I'd highly recommend this hotel for visitors to Hastings.

    Lovely hotel and very clean. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Rooms a little dated but well sized. Hopefully staying here next year again with the family. An added bonus to have the dogs with us in the room too.

    « A little weary »

    This hotel is right on the waterfront at Hastings and in its heyday would have been one of the best hotels in town. It is showing its age now, but it has a number of strong attributes. Firstly, the hotel staff make it their mission to please the guests and to provide service- such a refreshing approach these days. The bedroom we had was large, with creeky floors! It was clean as was the bathroom. There was a table with a kettle for tea/coffee (it could have been taller and wider to accommodate tea making) and the bathroom lacked a space to put toiletries for two people (there was enough space for one). Breakfast gave a choice of hot/cold food and the view from the windows in the dining room was beautiful. We could walk into town along the promenade and enjoy the sea breeze. Parking was problematic - OK if you secured a spot in front of the hotel, but if you were in parking across the street, you had to move the car early in the morning or pay for parking which is at a premium in Hastings.

    Stopped one night here with the dogs to try it out before a summer stay. Lovely hotel and great staff. Ended up having both evening meal and breakfast in it as well. Will be back longer in the summer for sure.

    « Nice Big Rooms, But Don't Expect Too Much »

    After staying at the Royal Victoria in August, I found myself back there again in October. I wasn't expecting to be back so quickly and it was great to be back in Hastings. The Hotel was not booked by myself and we had doubles this time not deluxes, but there was no difference in room sizes, so I was happy. That was one of the problems with the White Rock Hotel. Very narrow hallways, small rooms and inevitably more noisy. We took the dogs again and they were glad to be back by the sea. We booked two rooms and I was on the 5th floor. I thought it might be cramped, but in fact the room was nicer than the 3rd floor deluxe sea view room we had in August. The dogs had plenty of room (2 Rottweilers) so no problems with them. So learning from our last visit, we did not eat a single meal in the Hotel which was a good call. We had breakfast in a coffee shop every day a few doors down the road (turn left when leaving the hotel entrance) called Poffley's. The breakfasts were lovely, good value for money and the people in there are very friendly. The breakfast and service at the Hotel doesn't come close and our woes and stresses all occurred in the dining room previously, so definitely use the them as your breakfast bast. They also do nice lunches. The cleanliness of the rooms isn't great. The top of the beds are covered with dust, so I don't recommend running your finger along there with too much enthusiasm. The furniture in the room is clean though. I have a good sleep on the beds so I think the mattresses are pretty good. The bath panel was very dusty and I noticed this while sitting on the loo and ran my finger along it. However, I did imagine being outside of my own body, looking at myself doing this, and thought wow, whats wrong with me. Get a life woman! Anyway I didn't really care about the dust so it wasn't a big deal. The limescale and mold needs to be dealt with in the bathrooms, but again I didn't dwell on it. The service from the front desk and housekeeping was fine. Like I said, avoid the restaurant. We ate a lot at White's Seafood & Steak Bar. We sat outside with our dogs in the summer as did other people and ate our meals. This time it was a bit nippy so we ate without K9s inside. The food is Mmmmm. The portion sizes are pretty big and you don't need a starter at all to be full. I could only manage desert on one occasion and that was sheer greed and determination to find out what the deserts were like. Again very nice, but big. The service is very good and I would recommend reserving a table for dinner. There other good places to eat in Hastings I haven't been to yet, which we were told about in Poffley's. A very good Thai place which us always packed,but the name escapes me. We ordered Indian Food from the same Nepalese restaurant we used last time which was very good (forgotten that name too) and it was so much cheaper than London. It also doesn't take forever to arrive. Free bottle of wine if you spend £40 or more. You can ask for plates and cutlery at reception. Have to mention the Crepe Trailer outside the Hotel. In my first review I mentioned their lovely pancakes. We paid them a visit again. We had to. If you want big rooms, hallways and a quiet hotel, this is a great place to stay. They are above average size. Dog friendly with a beach that allows pooches to play freely, one of the designated areas being virtually outside the hotel door is a massive bonus. In all honesty I miss Hastings and I have seen how much it has improved since the 1980s when I first discovered it. One day this will be like another Brighton. Very busy and hectic. I love the fact it is so laid back and calm. The Shabby Chic of seaside towns is how I regard it. It is cool, because it isn't regarded as cool if that makes any sense. Its hard to go anywhere where people don't strike up a conversation with you, but a lot of that was due to having our dogs with us. People are generally very friendly though. One thing last thing. Providing some herbal tea bags in the room rather than just PG Tipps would be nice and some mineral water in glass bottles would be appreciated too. We never drink from the tap. Luckily there is a news agents next to Poffley's where you can buy water. Not much glass bottled water though. That can be bought in the town. Miss Hastings :(

    In room 410, very small compared to others. Bathroom fittings dated, shower head scaled up (poor water flow). Wash basin and mirrors all very low. Lighting in room very dim. Noisey room... can hear traffic, sirens and music base from venue near by :( Carpets, doors and lift all looking dated and dirty.

    « Fawlty Towers! »

    A reviewer describes the experience of the hotel as ?like going back in time almost'. I can assure the reviewer that the hotel has changed little from when my family used to stay there for Christmas over forty years ago. For one thing, the lift is still as slow and creaky as it was then! However, this time my visit to the hotel with my partner was more like entering an episode of Fawlty Towers. We wanted Room Service our first evening and I rang with our order. The phone was picked up by a woman with a very strong accent who demanded to know why I thought we could get Room Service. When I explained I had the Room Service meal menu in front of me I was told in an increasingly heightened tone that there was no Room Service. Luckily, the moment was saved by another, much more obliging woman taking the phone and taking our order. However, breakfast was little better. My partner wanted Rice Crispies. We were told that an unexpected coach party had arrived the previous day and devoured them all. Fair enough, but when my partner asked for Rice Crispies again the following morning (I do not take responsibility for my partner's taste in breakfast cereals) we were told that the previous night the hotel had expected 40 guests and got 70. Perhaps the coach party liked their Rice Crispies so much they stayed an extra night? Seriously, surely someone could have gone out during the previous day and purchased a couple of packets of Rice Crispies? I had a similar problem. I asked for grapefruit juice. The grapefruit juice was finished so I was given orange juice and a bowl of tinned grapefruit wedges. Again, this happened two mornings running. We have other Fawlty Towers-like stories but these will suffice. It was also the case that the beds had seen much better days. Indeed, their heyday might even have been when my family used to visit! The mattresses were lumpy and my partner complained of being able to feel the springs. We had a room overlooking the Channel and it was large and spacious. However, as someone else has remarked, cleaning the windows would have enhanced the view. The en suite was fine. Generally speaking the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful, and obviously trying their best in difficult circumstances. Though?back to Fawlty Towers?two of them having a lengthy, detailed and loud conversation about one of their personal health problems and the opinion of their doctor did not enhance our appetite. I realise that this is a dissenting view. Either other people are more tolerant?surprising at the cost of the hotel?or maybe we were unlucky.

    « Lovely Sea front hotel »

    We had a sea facing suite at the Royal Victoria for a long weekend, The room was spacious with a separate dressing area and ensiute. The hotel is elegant and very much of the period,Super dining room overlooking the sea, watch out for Jaun at breakfast ( he's from Barcelona ), All in all a really nice place to stay. with a handy and very good restaurant just over the road. The only drawbacks were lack of car parking and the hotel is a good way from the centre of Hastings, perhaps a mile and a half. but its flat and a nice walk,,,we got the bus back!

    we have come here for an autumn break for the last four years and every year the experience has got better always great value for the money staff are always friendly and helpful the rooms are excellent and refurbishments coming along great food is freshly cooked and good value and deserves to be busier

    « Lovely hotel, But....... »

    Stayed for the weekend 8th and 9th October. We found the hotel clean and the staff welcoming and friendly and the building it self very impressing, like going back in time almost. Our room was on the 3rd floor, 309, and was light and airy, for me a bonus as I don't like small spaces or lifts and so not too many stairs to climb. Breakfast is buffet style so you can fill your boots if you wish and staff are attentive. Only downsides were, the mattress could do with replacing in 309, the curtains need repairing in 309 and secondary glazing installed to reduce the amount of traffic noise from the main road. Oh and there is only about 10 parking spaces for the whole hotel, but pay and display close buy and tickets available from hotel reception for £4.00 per day.

    « Service as it used to be.... we'll be back! »

    As others have written.... parts of this hotel do look a little tried. But the staff are anything but tired and the service is just perfect. We were able to park right outside the hotel the day we arrived but that was just the luck of the draw. The hotel has 6 parking places but they seemed full all the time. But there is parking around the hotel and a reasonably priced car park opposite. On arrival we were greeted with smiles and offers of help. I needed my creditr card processed a special way - no problem. The room was very spacious with a small ante room where work could be done without disturbing others. The bath was older but the shower worked well and the water was hot in the morning (had to run it a bit in the evening). The beds were really comfortable with real old fashion pillows that support your head and covers that actually kept you warm overnight. The next morning I asked if they had any newspapers? No we don't but if you go ahead to the restaurant and start your breakfast we'll go get the paper that you want to bring it to you. I nearly dropped dead with shock on the spot! Breakfast wasn't the huge selection you get in fancier hotels but there were choices for everyone and the food tasted excellent. And the staff? They got us whatever we asked for quickly. The next day the newspaper that i ordered the night before hadn't arrived by the time we went down to breakfast. The front desk staff were horrified.... Please go and start your breakfast and we'l go get the paper and bring it to you. We wanted to go for a quick walk before leaving town and asked if we could leave our luggage with them for safe keeping. Of course you can and the staff came out and took everything off our hands and wished us a pleasant walk. On our return the got our luggage immediately and asked if we needed help loading the car. When I saw the bill I pointed out that they had only charged me for one paper - they seemed more worried that they had inconvenienced me than the fact that they had been shortchanged. Finally we thanked them and went to set off. Then they wished us a really good rest of our vacation and safe travels. So normally I would not give five stars for a hotel that needs a few licks of paint here and there. Five stars should almost mean perfection. But it is so unusual to find this level of service these days that I felt that it should be five stars to bring attention to it. The hotel structure may not have been perfect but everything else was.

    « A Weekend Away with Spooky Events »

    This is a very old hotel historically and architecturally. The inside is amazing but the outside is unkempt and dirty looking. Although some rooms are advertised as 'Sea View', having the windows cleaned would give the guest a better view and experience. The rooms are furnished in antique style furnishings but the lighting could be better situated. It is either very bright or quite dim. On entrance to the room there is a step up immediately after you open the door. However there is no warning of this on the entrance to the room, as a result my wife went head over heals, falling into the wall and injuring her face. We have highlighted this to the receptionist, time will tell if this is put right. I observed may elderly people during our stay and would hate for one of them to end up in a heap on the floor. During our stay something odd happened; The kettle switched itself on!!! also during the late afternoon my wife went for a lay down and complained of a draft and how cold room was. All the room windows and doors were closed. When we posted on Facebook about our weekend away, a friend and colleague mentioned that during their stay sometime ago that their kettle had switched itself on and that they had observed a cold mist pass through the room... on talking to the waiting staff they to had heard of and experienced ghostly happenings!!!!!!! We were disappointed by the bar, its closing times and the attitude of some of the bar staff. However would we stay there again... Most Definitely Yes

    « Lovely Building - Good Staff »

    As all of the others have said, it is a lovely building and is typical of a traditional seaside hotel. Yes, they have done their best in trying to keep the Old Dame alive and well. However, please remember this is a 3 star hotel, so be aware of this. The bed and bedding was rather old, but clean. If you want GREAT views of the sea, and a lovely traditional hotel, it is a find and ticks the box

    « Magnificent building, average hotel »

    This is a magnificent building, with wonderful architectural and design features from the glory days of Empire. If you want to walk in the footsteps of Gladstone and Palmerston, Victoria and Albert, then this is the place for you. We had a spacious suite (room 211) but the sea views were rather spoilt by scaffolding, which we hadn't been warned about. To be fair, the hotel is rather tired-looking and I shouldn't complain that they were doing something about it. Nice curtains, but the bath was chipped, and the room refreshments were restricted to tea-bags and instant coffee. Not a solitary biscuit! A bit disappointing in a suite. We had breakfasts on four successive days. On two mornings the tea-pots had chipped spouts, which seemed unhygenic. The food choice was exactly the same each morning, but plentiful and in keeping with a middle-of-the-range hotel chain. Which, despite the grand staircase and mirrors, is what it is. We weren't tempted to dine there in the evening. It wasn't just the hotel that has seen better days. The whole area has a run-down feel. We were rather apprehensive about parking our fairly new car on the back streets. Parking in front of the hotel is limited to eight or nine cars, not quite what you expect from a large hotel which claims to have on-site parking. When I checked out no-one asked me if we had had a pleasant stay, or wished me a safe journey. They had taken my money when we checked in and lost interest at that point. I even had to ask for a bill. Victoria would not have been amused!

    « fantastic staff and service »

    yes the hotel is very tired looking, but it is a beautiful old building with never ending repairs and redecorating, I stayed there 19th and 20th Sept., the lift was broken (the reason us OAPs booked the hotel), but that wasn't anyones fault, the lovely lad on reception had moved us from the 5th floor to the 2nd, we had four large seaview rooms, very good of him as we hadn't stated we were 4 old women ! We had dinner the first night, nice restaurant, lovely staff, the young girl who served us was charming. The young manager was very attentive, my meal was the pork loin chop, very tastey, really enjoyed it, my cousin enjoyed the sirloin steak, my sisters are too fussy for their own good and moaned a bit, I was the only smoker in our group, I went outside for a cigarette as the night porter (Bill) was locking the door, I was worried I would get locked out, Bill was so kind and went through all the procedure of getting back in, door bell, phone, walkie talkie, lovely man, enjoyed our chats at night and early morning, thankyou Bill. I would love to see this building restored to its glory days, I worked there 40 years ago, and yes I was shocked to see how run down the immediate row of shops were, but overall you really could not fault much at all, and praise to ALL the staff, keep up the good work and maybe see you all again soon, thanks Jackie

    Décor in bathroom a bit tired, but food good, staff good, and it was an enjoyable stay. Parking facilities minimal. Lighting in main bedroom by main wall lights only, this means getting out of bed to switch lights on and off.

    « Tired hotel which needs a refrwsh »

    Stayed one night on business and was disappointed. In its heyday I am sure it was very stylish but the decor is old and tired as is the furniture in the room. Had a bedroom at the front on the second floor (a 'suite') with no double glazing so was woken at 06.15 by constant traffic. Nice to see the sea though. Carpets, bathroom and furniture in the room was worn and shabby, although room was clean. Arrived mid evening and there was a coach party just entering the dinning room. About 30 mins later tried to order room service only to be told that wasn't possible because the kitchens were struggling to cope. If they knew a coach party was staying, there should have been more staff on! Had to go out to find food - and there aren't many restaurants close to the hotel. Breakfast was distinctly average. Won't go back and wouldn't recommend.

    « Comfortable and relaxed stay »

    My friends paid for my husband and I to stay here on our wedding night. We found all the staff to be very polite and helpful. The hotel itself is very dated although I think it would perhaps make the place less popular if they were to modernise it as it is so unusual to come across such a hotel nowadays. We stayed in the honeymoon suite which is on two levels so we had a living area with sofa, chair, small table and chairs, tv, mirror and kettle, cups, tea, coffee, etc downstairs and then upstairs we had the bed, build in wardrobes, chest of drawers, dressing table, bedside cabinets and the en suite bathroom. The bed was comfortable but too soft for our liking as we are used to a harder mattress. A strange thing happened that I was just drifting off to sleep and suddenly I heard three knocks as if someone was in the room knocking on the furniture!! Still not sure what that was. The shower wasn't very powerful so I would say that needs updating. Our room looked out across the sea. We really enjoyed the cooked breakfast the next morning, it was really tasty. I would stay at this hotel again although I doubt I ever will as I live in Hastings and only stayed here on my wedding night as it was a wedding present and just across the road from my wedding reception.

    The Royal Victoria hotel is in a good location, easy to get to and well placed for Hastings and the surrounding areas. Its in a prime location and opposite the beach, it is a lovely building and has original stairways. Good breakfast available .

    « Lovely Overnight Stay »

    This was our first stay at this hotel. The location, overlooking the beach at St Leonards is ideal, being very convenient for a nice walk into both old and new Hastings. The first impression of this very traditional, Victorian style hotel was good and when entering our room we were amazed at how large and spacious it was. Our only meal was breakfast in the Sea Terrace Dining Room the following morning but that was very good too. My only real criticism is that parking is in public roads around the hotel and spaces can be difficult to find. However, this is a minor issue and we did enjoy our stay here and will definitely use the hotel again.

    The Victoria is the sort of hotel you see so rarely nowadays. It's a big old mansion with the original stairs, spacious public rooms and comfortable modern bedrooms. It's right opposite the beach, a bracing location for walks and seaside air.

    « Faded Grandeur »

    We had a very nice stay at this hotel for a short break. The Hotel has a prime location between Hastings and St Leonard's opposite the beach and promenade and has a marvellous history with many royal guests staying there, including Queen Victoria hence the name. The interior is very much of that period and quite grand. Staff were friendly and helpful food at breakfast was fine and dinner in the evening was mixed ranging from excellent to disappointing depending on choice of main. My only real criticism was that it clearly needs an update. Furnishings appear to have not been really changed since the 90's, my curtains were frayed and torn and needed replacing, a lampshade had a large hole in it and I could feel the springs in my mattress. Minor things which didn't spoil my stay but gave a feeling of neglect in recent years. However, due too the location, staff and overall cleanliness I would happily stay there again and would recommend it.

    « perfect location, great sized rooms »

    This is the second time i have stayed at this hotel, having returned this year after a great experience last. The rooms are huge with a lovely extra 'dressing room', free wifi good breakfast and very friendly staff. We had an issue with no cold water coming out of our basin but not only were they very apologetic about not being able to fix it there and then (10pm on a friday - i wasn't expecting them to do so ) it was sorted by the time we returned on saturday. Great position right on the sea and i love the sweeping stair case

    « Overall and nice and friendly hotel »

    I booked three rooms so we could attend a wedding nearby which I had to attend at 1330pm. Originally told by the hotel that that check in was 1400 and I explained about the wedding time and was told I would have to pay extra for each room to check in early. I later called the hotel again and spoke to reception and explained the situation and the person I spoke to could not be more helpful and said she would put a not on the booking and we could check in at 1200. Upon arrival on the wedding day 03/09/2016, the rooms were ready and the receptionist was very helpful. The rooms were clean and large. Two of the showers did have shower controls that were difficult to control and the water pressure did not appear to be very good. Breakfast was really good with a great selection and the staff again were very helpful. All in all we had a very enjoyable stay.

    The Royal Victoria is clean and comfortable and the room we had was a good size. It is not the most glamorous place but it is excellent value and in a good location. The staff too were friendly and helpful.

    « Bank holiday trip »

    Stayed here for the bank holiday weekend. Upon arrival, we found out that there was only 6 car parking spaces, however there is a car park just along the front. Just remember to update ticket in windscreen the night before. The lift is the slowest I have ever been in in my life and we was on the top floor. The room was a seaview and huge with table and chairs too. Very nice. The first night was very humid and in the welcoming pack says there are fans available. Went down to reception to ask for one. They hadn't any left and said all the shops had sold out too. I didn't have a very good sleep as it also felt like I was falling out of bed. The next day Told my partner to lie on it and she agreed. So lifted the mattress and the bed frame was broken. Went down to reception and told them. Was offered another room but not seaview which we had paid for. so declined that. Then was offered drinks at the bar to which I said my partner doesn't drink. So was then offered a meal which was very nice but had to pay for my drinks which I needed as was getting back into the broken bed. It's nice to see that they are doing some maintenance to the building as you enter the hotel as its a bit tired in places which is a shame as its a beautiful building. It has a lovely marble stairway up to the piano lounge. Breakfast was average. If returning to this area would stay again.

    « Disappointing Sleep. »

    Just arrived home from a sleepless night after a 24 hour stay at the Royal Victoria Hotel. Location great, staff friendly, breakfast good and room clean, but my wife and I just couldn't sleep. Arrived back at the hotel after seeing a friend at 10.45pm to the sounds of music blasting out from the Masonic Assembly Rooms opposite. Hoping this would stop at 11.00pm but didn't till around 11.30pm.     I stayed here at the beginning of August for one night with a friend and this was pretty perfect. The location is great as the beach is across the road! We both love a walk so were happy to walk 30-40 minutes into central Hastings but there are plenty of shops and restaurants surrounding the hotel with plenty of things to do. The room was huge, a little outdated but still really nice. The only issue we had was leaving our luggage before check in and after check out. We were told to put bags in the room ' over there' which was unlocked. Not hugely safe - that is the only reason I'm giving them 4 stars not 5. However, I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone!

    We requested a large sized room with a sea view. Unfortunately a decorator was painting the external window frames and could see straight in, and the room was full of paint fumes. To the hotel's credit when we came back later in the afternoon they'd put us into a nearby room which was much, much better. Room 201. It has a mezzanine with the double bed up a flight of stairs. Rather quaint and unusual. This is our 3rd visit to the Royal Victoria and we'd gladly come back again. England's faded glory type of seaside resort hotel

    We booked this hotel by reading mostly positive reviews, all I can say is these reviewers must be blind. After a 25 minute check in we were instantly changed rooms as our room hadn't been cleaned yet, on arrival at our room 311 (2nd room) there was a musky/damp smell. On further inspection as we unpacked we found litter in one of the bedside tables and a glass underneath the bed and a mouldy tortilla chip by my daughters Bed! The rooms are extremely hot and windows only open 3 inches with no lock to keep it up so we used a bottle to keep it open. Alongside on several occasions we have had to kill wasps whom have flown in. Even though there were apparent renovations on the ground and first floor I don't see no evidence of this. At a cost of £120 per night including breakfast I'd rather put up with the uncomfortable beds at premier inn. Bathroom ceiling is mouldy along with urine stains and a pubic hair on the toilet seat. Although the staff are friendly and helpful and room service and requests are met quickly we don't feel this is of a high enough standard to charge these rates. After we had unpacked we went down to the " piano bar " where yes there was a piano but no pianist food and beverage prices are astronomical and when we ordered an afternoon tea and asked specifically for no fish or mustard due to allergies but low and behold I get a salmon sandwich tuna sandwich and ham and mustard sandwich with stale cakes microwaved scones. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY WE ARE STILL WAITING TO SEE THE CIRCUS ACT OF BREAKFAST

    The room we booked had a broken tap so was immediately was upgraded to a new room and it was really nice and spacious. I didn't have enough money to buy a sea view room but fortunately we was given the upgrade for free. We felt like rich kings and queens in our beautiful giant sea view room. Only down side was the lift was so slow.

    The hotel is superbly located just across the road from a sandy beach. The ground floor and first floor have recently been re-decorated, and look very smart. Our room was on the 5th floor - very spacious, and well appointed, with good views of the beach, and cliffs

    The positives - The hotel staff were friendly, efficient and courteous. Requests for assistance and advice were acted upon promptly. Buffet breakfast was adequate and served in pleasant surroundings with a sea view. Negatives - the shower was problematic to say the least. Very low water pressure and only a trickle of cold water. Therefore the shower options were hot or hot! The room was not cleaned nor the bed made during our stay. A member of staff did knock on the door to change the towels (which was unnecessary and not environmentally friendly). Overall the hotel has a lot going for it but like so many hotels of this type it is in need of a bit of TLC and some renovation to restore some of its faded glory.

    We stayed from Monday to Thursday, best "holiday bed" we've ever slept in ! Lovely hotel, full of charm and character - efficient staff - superb breakfast - and on the seafront too. Recommended - we'll return.....soon I hope !!

    We stayed in a seaview double room overlooking the water. The rooms were okay, furnishings needed some TLC and the carpet is a little worn. The bed was reasonably comfortable. Bathroom was okay but dated. We had dinner and breakfast here, nothing out of the ordinary. Reception staff were pleasant and helpful. Free parking overnight and free wifi. We felt that it needed some money spent on restoring or repairing old, dated rooms and furniture. It trades very much on its past glory. It is also out of Hastings and in fact is in St Lronards.

    Very dirty, tired & shabby furniture including a filthy 2 seater sofa. Mattressess were old, soft & we could feel every spring so we had an awful nights sleep. Broken window catches that could not be locked plus gaps where putty had fallen out. Mould on the bathroom ceiling & a dangerously slippery bath. The whole place was grubby looking. I would never stay here again & would discourage others from doing so.

    We stayed one night for a family funeral. The hotel while situated well on the seafront, gives the look of it's best times being well behind it. This look and feel of faded glory continued when we went in. There was a distinct musty smell of damp about the place. The room, while spacious was a bit dull and shabby. There was no hot water on the day we were there. While the hotel did give us a reduction, this is a basic detail. Breakfast, for what we paid I would have expected more.

    We booked a twin room as no doubles were available and were pleasantly surprised to find we'd been allocated a family room ( double and two singles). Room well decorated and bed very comfortable. Reception staff efficient and friendly. Free parking overnight as a bonus (6.00pm - 9.00am) in the car park opposite. Only reason for not giving a fifth star is location. It's a fair old walk into Hastings as the hotel is actually in St Leonards even though booking.com say Hastings!

    Although the rooms would benefit from being updated, our room was clean and comfortable and the staff were incredibly helpful. Every request was met and all the staff were cheerful, friendly and helpful. Lovely views of the sea from the Dining Room and good breakfasts also enhanced our start to each day. Gary and his team couldn't be faulted.

    We stayed one night. Hotel has some history & nice features. It is in need of a refirb but that would put it in a different price bracket. Its good value for money. Our room was clean & comfortable. Great sea views. Breakfast was Ok. These grand old hotels are lovely buildings. Parking is not good,its free if you can find a space in the road. The hotel has parking for about 5 cars! Other hotels in the area do permits for a pound & you can park in the marina opposite. This hotel wanted £4.50 ( rip off) but this is only good till 9am next day. If you buy a ticket at the machine you get 24 hours from when you enter for £5.50. Thought the restaurant in the hotel was a bit pricy plenty near by towards Hastings centre.

    We have just had a long weekend at this hotel. The staff were extremely helpful and could not fault them. The hotel however is really out dated, tatty and unloved. There was a constant musky smell which really comes from a place being worn out and in need of decorating and refurbishing. The carpet in some areas was thread bare and dirty. The lights were never on on the staircase at night very strange! This will be the last time I use a best western hotel and I would not recommend wasting your money!

    The staff were very welcoming and helpful, very important following a horrendous afternoon on the M25 and A21 travelling to Hastings! Whilst some of the decor may be a little tired everything was functional and the staircase from reception to the first floor, with its full length mirror is amazing. We chose a room with a seaview and it was two or three times the size of rooms you find at this price and it did indeed have an excellent panoramic seaview The hotel was quiet and the bed comfortable so we had a good night's sleep. Breakfast was a buffet with a good selection. For those travelling by train the hotel is a few minutes walk from St Leonards Warrior Square Station

    Stayed just one night, we had great and spacious rooms overlooking the sea. The exterior of the hotel is very grand although interior decor rather dated, everywhere is clean. Dinner was average, buffet breakfast good. Staff at all times were attentive, friendly and very helpful.

    We booked this hotel for a Saturday night by the sea. This got well rated on tripadvisor compared to other hotels. If you are looking for a weekend break and a relax don't book this hotel. Just behind the hotel is a Masonic Hall which can be hired out for weddings. Turns out their music licence means they can have loud music till 1am. We were on the 5th floor but we couldn't sleep especially when it's so hot you need the windows open and can hear everyone smoking outside the Masonic hall. I felt like the hotel should warn its guests that they can be subjected to such noise. The man at check-in was helpful and polite. We got to our room which was large but very dated. Given the fact that these old hotels don't have air con I do expect a cotton sheet as well as a duvet so if it's too hot you can through the duvet off. In the end my husband and I ended waking up in a pool of sweat. The breakfast was self service and the food was tasty. When we went down it seemed like chaos with dirty tables and food running low. Another note is this hotel does not have a lot of parking nearby especially if all the wedding guests have taken it first! If you want to go to Hastings go for a more central B&B as for £126pn it was a rip-off!

    Our large room was pleasant enough if a bit dated. The curtains had been velcro'd together when drawn as clearly they did not meet in the middle when drawn as the windows were very tall. Facilities in the room were as you would expect: kettle, fridge, hairdryer, sockets near mirror (you'd be amazed how many rooms don't achieve this!!). I was most disappointed with the bathroom. A large room, the shower was over a bath and the toilet pan was badly stained with age. A deep clean would shift that - you've seen it done on documentaries enough times so really don't think a hotel has any excuse to have a toilet in this state. The room badly needed updating. I told reception who made a note - let's hope they take action too! There was a small somewhat quaint lift but as we were only on the second floor we used the stairs. Breakfast was served on the first floor in a rather grand salon overlooking the sea. Food and service were fine. There are a lot of hotels refurbishing to a theme, usually seaside/coastal in muted shades and with coordinated decor bits and pieces. They provide restful clean fresh environments in which to stay even if only for a night. Best westerns and other hotels looking tired and dated would do well to take note, and action.

    Probably five years since I was here. NOTHING has changed except the staff! Lovely receptionists, very helpful. Comfortable rooms with better than basic facilities. Extraordinary decoration in the Piano Bar. Unfortunately there was no pianist on Tuesday. Rude, but efficient, bar lady and poor bar food. Great breakfast with terrible coffee. I seem to remember making almost the same comments before. A few little tweeks would make this a better hotel.

      I really wanted to like this hotel, it as some history behind it and it is right across from the water. The staff behind the desk are pleasant and helpful. I noticed a lot of dogs coming in and out of the hotel some of them were quite large. If your looking for a pet friendly hotel this place MIGHT work for you. That is where the good news ends. A whole bunch of us stayed at the Royal Victoria Hotel for a family reunion. There were many reports of rooms being too hot, of windows not opening and curtains not closing. The Hotel is tired it needs some redecorating and heavy duty cleaning. As far as I know there is only one elevator. It is slow and tiny and again in need of a good clean. If you are relying on Internet access through your hotel this is not the one for you. I spent more time trying to login to the internet then I did on it. It kicked me off every minute or so.  I was not the only one in our group with this problem. Let's talk food and service. High tea is served from 3 to5:30pm. A group of five of us went a little after three only to be told they had run out of scones due to walk ins. (Tea had started 15 minutes ago!) We were told that the kitchen  was making more but they wouldn't be served till the next day. There are a couple reasons this infuriated me. One it takes roughly 45 minutes from gathering ingredients to fresh hot scones. There was no reason we couldn't be told come back in an hour and 'we'll have scones ready; sorry for the inconvenience ladies'. Second if we follow the managers logic through that means they are serving day old scones to people for top dollar! I suppose I'm forced to admit there are some more positives. My family can be quite loud when gathered together which we did frequently over the course of a week usually at night until the small hours of the morning. We were not told that we were disturbing other guest nor that the bar was closed. Good for us...not so good for other guests. In short I've stayed at Best Westerns in Canada and this place just doesn't stack up to that standard. I will not be staying here again.

    We had a huge room for 3, with a settee and table and chairs. Staff were very helpful with Pokemon information and gave us lots of hints and tips for my kids. We had a lovely drink in the very grand first level. Magnificent sea views. Very helpful and friendly staff who organised a gluten free breakfast, again he views were superb! Highly recommend.     Housekeeping in the hotel was below an acceptable standard, particularly in the dining room. The furnishings and curtains in the room were tired and grubby and the w.c was stained through age and needed deep cleaning. The staff were pleasant and helpful,but rather let down by the jaded condition of the hotel.It appears there is no Best Western brand therefore you cannot predict a franchise standard.

    stayed one night. great location overlooking the pebble beach. our room was large with dated décor and only a double bed:-( window did not open fully and there was no air conditioning, so it was not a very pleasant sleep im afraid, for this reason we wouldn't return during the summer. bathroom had shower attachment over bath but the water was scolding hot and you could not find a comfortable temperature to shower im afraid. only supplied shower gel and soap, no shampoo or conditioner. breakfast was average. only one small 6 person lift in whole hotel, which is not really adequate for the size of hotel.

    Ten years ago we were married and stayed in the honeymoon suite in this hotel, and on that occasion it was super and I commented then how good it was, every detail was listed and well worth the expense. I thought today it was time we revisted the hotel as we were in the area. I made a reservation for dinner and was promised a window table which we got. There was one menu for dinner, a three course meal for £21.50 or two courses for £17.50 with an extensive pricy wine list. No other menus were avaiable. There were four choices for starters, five for mains and four again for desserts, the rack of lamb and steak had a £3.00 supplement charge if you wanted a sauce on the meat. We chose Thai prawns and soup, two duck breasts and fresh fruit salad, one glass of wine and coffee. The meal for around fifty quid as a one off situation was good, the service was good, the food was hot, very tasty and was well presented by the chef, full marks to him, albeit, the portions for a hungry man were a bit on the smallish side, whereas my wifes portion was ample. However, and it didn't detract from the meal in any way, we had to point out to the duty manager Garry, (who took on board our observations whilst we eating our meals, and he himself apologised for the situation as it wasn't his fault), but the same owner Dr. Shin who has been there years and years must wake up to the fact that his dinning area was far from clean and as he entered the area himself, he must walk around with his eyes closed. The window sills all along the terrace area were dirty and had dead flies just lying there, couldn't some one just get a duster and ensure cleanliness. All the terrace windows in the dinning area were dirty, marks had been on them days, again why weren't they clean? The radiator under our table had a spillage on it which had to have been there ages and yet it wasn't clean. There were double doors on the left hand side of the diining room,all the window areas were filthy as nobody uses the door knob itself to open them, and so on. We asked why the waitress didn't even have a small pinafore on around her waist, so as preventing spillages from water/wine etc, going on her own clothes. The probable answers to our observations on cleanliness, is who is going to do the extra work with buckets of soap, dusters etc as Dr. Shin obviously doesn't pay enough detail to staffing levels because if he did, then these poor housekeeping areas would not be there. It sounds as if I am attacking Dr. Shin, no just pointing out areas of concern to me as previously before I was married, I used to stay in the hotel alot and really nothing much has changed during the time Dr. Shin has been there, sorry I forgot, the outside of the hotel has also had a new paint job done on it. Overall, as previously stated, we enjoyed the meal, felt sorry for the duty manager, and hope in the future if ever we revisit, we find the hotel in a much better shape than it was tonight.

    Our first impressions on entering were of an hotel that is in need of a refurb and has seen better days. Our room was a huge sea facing room with an almost separate room with a settee where the tele was so you couldn't see it from the bedroom part. However whilst it is not a modern room we soon settled in and had taken elderly parents away for a couple of nights. The staff were all friendly and helpful. We ate one night in the main restaurant and were surprised by how good the food was with again very friendly staff. Right on the sea front so good for flat walks out. Went to a great Italian restaurant just up the road called La Bella Vista run by a family from Sorrento.

    « An unexpected visit. »

    I stayed for almost 3 weeks in total, whilst sorting out my late brother's affairs.It was a wonderful distraction from the sadness of my situation. The enormous restaurant conjuring up pictures in my mind of when it would have been full. I had used the delightful Piano Lounge for the Reception, which was a very good decision. The setting, catering and service were superb. Having been upgraded to a suite, with a sea-view, my stay was first class. The room and hospitality in general were excellent. All the staff were friendly and helpful - but special thanks to Anna, in reception for all her help. The restaurant food was pleasant - I dined most nights. The staircase from the lobby is a gem, with the mirrors and the wonderful chandelier - sadly not often lit, due to the expense. The Hotel is run by Dr and Mrs Shin and her flowers and plants give good cheer. I would definitely return - under happier circumstances next time.

    This hotel has a wonderful interior and dates from the earliest days of Hastings as a tourist spot! Magnificent staircase and reception area. The restaurants is pretty good too! Nice big lounges where you can sit and talk. The best rooms are the suits at the front overlooking the sea. Ponytailpoet was much impressed!

    We have stayed at several Best Western hotels during the last 12 months and this was one of the best. Superb location on the sea front in St Leonards. Very friendly and welcoming staff, for whom nothing was too much trouble - including upgrading our room to a more spacious, sea-facing one. Thoroughly recommended!

    We just love this hotel. We come for one night and usually end up staying two! Our seaview room, with it's huge Windows make you feel you are on the beach. The staff are fun, happy and attentive. The croissants could be bigger and hot for breakfast, though there is a good choice. Juan the weekend waiter is entertaining and in his 26th year. Galia the Piano barmaid has a wonderful sense of humour. Reception staff are efficient, Courteous and really want you to have s good time. Thanks we will be back.

    I stayed at this hotel for four nights, in a sea view room on the fourth floor. When I opened the door, I was taken aback by the size of the room - it was huge! There was a separate area through an alcove where there was a single bed in addition to my double bed - what a great idea! The room was well decorated, spotlessly clean with a beautiful view to the sea through lovely big window. Lovely large bathroom with bath/shower. The staircase is absolutely beautiful - stunning and very grand. Breakfast is provided in the restaurant on the first floor, again with beautiful views of the sea. Good range of choice, from lovely fruit salad, cereals, toast and also cooked breakfast. All very nice indeed and piping hot too. The staff were very pleasant, polite and helpful. Overall, a lovely stay and I would have no hesitation in coming back again.

    « Grandeur that's a little faded. »

    We wanted a reasonably priced room for three nights in Hastings and this fit the bill perfectly. Once upon a time an opulent hotel that I believe hosted Queen Victoria, it is now a little faded with definitely quirky plumbing. The Grade II listed staircase and public areas are still very grand. Our room was a twin with a separate alcove, ideal for families or friends. I had to get the desk chair changed immediately as it nearly collapsed when I sat on it, but this was done within 5 minutes. The water pressure was poor and the toilet flush was temperamental. As we were only there three nights we put up with it and mentioned it on leaving. A note was made so hope it was fixed. The prices in the bar seemed to vary from night to night depending on who was serving. The cooked breakfast was excellent and the chef was happy to cook fresh scrambled egg for my mother each morning. Overall good value for money but areas that could be worked on.

    Stayed here for 2 nights. The hotel is rather large and historic. The building itself is very attractive and quite well decorated. However, like many hotels in this chain, the place needs 'managing'! Whilst sitting in the Ocean Room and Sea Terrace Restaurant situated on the first floor...there are plants in pots on the window ledges either dead or dying....and paint flaking from the walls. Apparently our room was of 'Superior' standard?.....although that might be debatable. It certainly wasn't cheap. A little more 'attention to detail' would enhance not only this hotel...but many more Best Western establishments. Staff, mostly foreign, naturally, were polite and courteous.

    « I guess we went on a bad day. »

    On arrival we were booked into a 4th floor room which was ok but as I don't do stairs and my partner doesn't do lifts I asked if we could be moved. Immediately we were offered a family room on the 1st floor. A big thank you to the receptionist for that. A lengthy walk along the sea front and back in time for dinner. At this point I was going to list several negative points but as the staff explained they had no manager and a new head chef, they were to get the right meals to the right tables at the right time. But I won't mention that as the staff were extremely apologetic and at check out there was a healthy discount to my bill. I do hope they can get their management sorted as the staff are exceptional. Oh and the hotel itself is quite nice if a bit tired.

    I read a lot of negative reviews about this hotel but I have to say it more than met our expectations of a traditional seaside hotel. A disabled parking space was reserved on the forecourt as requested. We were given a warm and friendly welcome at reception and check in was quick and easy. Immediately the old fashioned grandeur strikes you, from the revolving entrance door to the ornate marble and mahogany staircase. We went in the lift to our room (212) and as I walked along the passage way the maid offered to help me with my suitcase. The room which was a suite, more than met our needs with its high ceilings, spacious rooms, comfortable settees and huge television. The carpet is old fashioned beigey floral, be warned and the curtains are a sanderson type chintzy look!! The rooms were spotlessly clean. The bathroom was also a good size and had complimentary toiletries. As it was hot, we requested a fan, which was brought within minutes. Very amply furnished with plenty of storage. The sea view was beautiful and we left our windows open at night to hear the sea. The bed was a double rather than a king size, but it was fine. The staff couldn't have been kinder and more helpful. The hotel is not like a modern hotel such as the "purple" Lenny Henry type, or a posh London hotel. It is a traditional building which is very old and its quirkiness is what makes it special. If you don't do old fashioned charm, don't book. We did not try the food as we ate out, but I do know they do room service. A daily paper can also be arranged for you. We have already re booked and can recommend this place very highly.

    Hastings, like many English "seaside" towns, has seen better days, and many of the seafront hotels and guesthouses look somewhat worse for wear, but this old hotel has been renovated to a high standard inside. Rooms are large and sometimes quirky (my daughter's featured a spiral staircase to nowhere), but comfortable enough, and breakfast was good. The hotel is a longish walk from Hastings downtown.

    Stayed for one night on business, was not looking forward to it based on the negative reviews. The reality was different, I admit it is an old hotel and as such the plumbing may be a bit quirky. That said my room was large, well appointed and clean. I found the staff really helpful and pleasant. Breakfast was standard hotel fare, but piping hot with hot plates to keep it so. Great views and overall, I would stay here again.

    The hotel is in urgent need of a complete refurbishment to bring it back to its former glory. Car parking is very restricted. The local area is run down, a poor seaside town also in need of TLC. Staff work well and are very good, but let down by the environment. Not recommended for anything other than a base to explore at Sussex, but I'm sure the are better options

    We stayed in room 304 last weekend in this hotel. We weren't really expecting too much as we had only paid a small price of £60 for the night. However, when we opened our hotel door, our room was absolutely HUGE and beautiful! There was a massive king sized bed with tables either sides of the it with beautiful, pink vintage lamps on top. To the left of the room there was a windy staircase leading down to a smaller room with loads of closet space! The bathroom was lovely and clean and the bath was of a good size! We were super super pleased with our beautiful room and we didn't want to leave!! AMAZING value for money!! Definitely would stay here again in room 304!!!

    arrived at 21:00 after a 200 mile drive, could not find anywhere to park. i pulled up outside hotel and went to reception where i was told you can park anywhere on the street, but they did not have a car park. i explained that my wife had mobility issues. the information book in the room states that disabled parking is available on request, thats a joke. we park in front of the hotel but where told that we would have to move the car if other residents needed to move there cars. it was a friday night and there is a night club at the rear of the hotel and no double glasing, need i say more. avoid if you can.

    « Tired old hotel - not good »

    Only needed to stay one night, we wanted a hotel on the sea front & this looked ok on the website. Very limited parking, if the few bays at the front are full you have to hunt around the streets at the rear. In it's hay-day the hotel probably had lots of style & up to date amenities, but it's now tired & dated, no amount of paint (a lot of pink) will recover it's faded charms. The main entrance is dingy, the restaurant has nice views but the breakfast was dreadful. Our room was large with a decent sea view, but the bed was the most uncomfortable we have ever had the misfortune to try to sleep in. The staff were friendly & polite, but few on the ground. In the restaurant they seemed to prefer chatting to each other than attending to the guests Oh dear - it sufficed as a one night stopover, but never again

    Stayed here for our wedding night, absolutely lovely room hotel is classic and elegant, very clean and had a Victorian charm about the place. Room had all of the usual amenities kettle mezzanine floor above with the bathroom and bedroom with dressing table and chest of drawers. Sofa, Chair coffee table beautiful room to stay in. Breakfast was lovely buffet style with continental and fried available will stay here again and we only live 5 mins up the road ha ha.

    The ONLY reason we stayed here was because we was attending a wedding at the Azur across the road from the Royal Victoria. The only good thing about this hotel is the staff are very helpful. Other than that it needs closing down, ripping everything out and giving it a complete refurb. The towels in the bathroom were threadbare, the taps leaked over the bath. it is old, out dated and dirty...the windows did not close properly in our room, the cobwebs and dirt on the curtains (that were held together with velcro) were vile. The ladies toilets on the first floor absolutely stunk of drains and sewage, it was so bad it was making me gag. The lady who was working behind the bar came in with some bleach to put down the toilets to make it smell better, i think it needed more than that. And I only hope she washed her hands before serving drinks in the bar !!!!! The tea cups in the breakfast room were stained and dirty, as were the teapots & milk jugs. The beans I think were just tipped in a tray and left to heat up over a lamp, the mushrooms were tinned. I could go on forever. Without sounding like a snob we do not ever stay in anything less than a 4 star hotel, so maybe this is just how other hotels are.

    We stayed one night at this nostalgic hotel. The location can't be beat -- however parking was scarce. Though a bit dated, our room was clean, comfortable with a priceless view! The staff were professional and helpful. We would certainly return.

    My wife and i booked the Royal Victoria for 3 days of relaxation,we ended up cutting our trip short by 1 night,because of the extreme cold at Hastings. The Hotel was very welcoming,but with no entertainment we grew bored.Perhaps a 'Piano Bar' should boast a pianist more often??

    Yes, it's a bit worn, but it's a beauty of its type. I had a bizarre mezzanine suite. Quirky but comfortable. Breakfast was excellent. Location can't be beaten. Worn, comfortable, warm (heating on in May) and you'd miss it if it went. Like slippers

    I initially arrived here on a Sunday afternoon as I was working nearby on the Monday. The hotel seemed quite tired and old, but when I got up to my room it seemed to transform into a room with character. The room was absolutely huge with two individual chairs and coffee table, ample storage space, a desk with chair and large ensuite. There were a few things to improve, like the Velcro curtains and the slightly sloped bed, but on the whole I had a good nights stay here. For a suite, the price tag was not too outrageous, especially with the sea view. Note: parking is an issue here, with very limited spaces!!!

    We stayed here for a girls holiday in May 16. The hotel was probably lovely 30 years ago but has not aged well. The location is good is you just want near the sea and it's all a bit shabby close by, We had afternoon tea In the hotel and it was mediocre at best. The food had obviously been left out for a while as the sandwiches were hard round the edges and the cakes weren't very nice. There was plenty of teas / coffee and scones and very nice staff though, but I defiantly wouldn't recommend it. The room was as expected for the price. Rather old fashioned (my parents would probably love it) In style but large and comfy beds. It could of done with a deep clean though as the headboard, lamps etc had layers of dust and the curtain rail fell down I the night and the toilet flush was tricky. The view from the room was lovely as we were in the 5th floor and had a sea view. Again, once it would of been lovely. The breakfast was ok, but rather overpriced at £10. Chipped cups and dirty chairs apart, the food was hot, edible and lots of it. The staff were very very slow at clearing the tables though (in fact we sat there for a while chatting and none of our tables are cleared). If you want cheap and don't mind old fashioned and aren't really bothered if it's a bit dusty and dated this is for you.

    I really had very low expectations about a hotel that we had booked simply to provide a meeting point with a couple of friends on a very short trip to Hastings. Along with many south coast hotels from the heyday of Victorian seaside holidays this hotel has certainly seen better days. But having stayed along the coast in 5star hotels like the Grand at Brighton and Eastbourne, I can see the potential for this hotel under its new management. The revolving doors open onto a somewhat tired lobby, but the mirrored staircase takes you up to the piano room and restaurant with lovely views out to sea. We were on the third floor with an upgraded sea view and I have to say the small suite was charming. We didn't get to try the restaurant but the hotel and its facilities along with the staff get a strong 4 star from me. I hope that the owners continue to invest in this place - it could be a little gem

    Dont be put off by the lacklustre reception area. The rest is fine! Surprisingly pleasant hotel - Fantastic room, large, comfy, high ceilings, freshly painted walls. Awful flowered carpet though! Plenty of sockets, modern TV. Bathroom huge, but bath needed replacing as rusty in places. It was being done the next day. Whole hotel is gradually being refurbed. Yes it is old fashioned, but in a really nice way. Music is beautiful. Jazz and very appropriate. Conservatory - of a bygone age. Have booked again!

    we visited the best western for my birthday.entering the building it is really lovely with a quaint staircase.there is a lift for the upper rooms.our bedroom was on the third floor overlooking the beach area.it was a great view and the room was very spacious.nothing special but really comfortable.the bed was huge and very cosy.we stayed for 3 nights and all nights we slept very well.breakfast in the morning was adequate and the service was professional. now for the downside.we went for evening meal at the restaurant and had pate starter.it was not freshly made but just out of a packet with a bit of salad,2 crusty pieces of melba toast and a small pot of caramelised onions.not bad but not the best I have tasted.the main course was atrocious.we both had steak,my wife's rare,mine mid rare,chips and a tomato placed on the plate.that's it.the chips were frozen packet chips and the steaks,my wife's was well done with the fat not even rendered and left on the steak,mine also was well done.we did not eat these meals so we complained.there were only 3 couples in the restaurant and one of the couples was us!.did not have to pay for the meals.went back to bedroom and ordered room service and that was just as bad.what I would say is they need to really improve on the evening food and room service as this is under par and not professional enough.that lets the hotel down.there are restaurants all over the place though near the hotel.i would say the Italian way in the new town of hastings is yummy.our stay though at the hotel was good and if I had the chance I would stay here again

    Wasn't really too sure what to expect from here, however it has been a pleasant surprise. The parking is very limited and the reception compact, however the Hotel itself is lovely. Right on the seafront and very much a grand hotel complete with wooden features & carpeted (v slow) lift. It's clear the hotel has had some investment, and also that more wouldn't go amiss. That said the staff here are great, from check in to leaving. The room was huge - almost a suite and well appointed and comfortable. I'd come back for sure and maybe go for a sea view next time and try the bar.

    We came for a lodge festival evening bar area nice as always but tables had not been cleared ! The wine ordering list was not ready so had to wait and order just at the last minute . Durning the course of the evening we found out that some people had not got their food as run out and had to chose something else !! The food was poor due to not a lot of it and as for the cheese biscuits we had two biscuits and one small piece of cheese ! How has this lovely hotel gone down in space of a year - has ownership changed hand ? Such a shame you need to up your game as standards have dropped badly !

    « Old-fashioned but lots of character with spacious, comfortable rooms »

    The hotel is in a great position on the sea front, though bear in mind it is in St Leonards, so not far from Warrior Square train station but about a mile from the centre of modern Hastings and further still from the old town. There is a very limited number of hotel parking spaces, but most of us managed to find room there. First impressions inside are of rather faded grandeur, with a rather cramped lobby and only one slow lift. However looking more closely, a lot of refurbishment has been carried out, and the hotel has lots of character. Our room was on the fourth floor, and although looking out at the back, was very spacious and comfortable. Service was mixed: most of the staff were very helpful, particularly the Duty Manager. Service to our party at dinner was very slow, but they put that right the next two nights. Unfortunately, the elderly lady on the bar was an exception, with an attitude problem; although the wine list is very short, one evening she refused to serve any wine except the two or three bottles she had behind the bar, rather than asking another staff member to fetch them from the store. Food at breakfast and dinner was nothing outstanding, but was quite acceptable.

    We loved room 211 with its sea view and spacious layout with comfortable furniture. Hotel itself offers character, Victorian period details in the Piano Bar and is in a good location on the seafront. I hate 'brand' hotels where every one you stay in looks the same: modern and soulless. This one was a refreshing contrast. Tea and coffee facilities in the room - lovely - could have done with complimentary biscuits though. A room safe would be useful, as would a minibar, but I can live without them and I would choose old-fashioned style and comfort before them if I had to. We would definitely be happy to book this hotel again.

    welcoming hotel with lovely staff who go the extra mile to help. Sea facing rooms were lovely and huge! Had taken a group of 34 people there and everyone was happy. The chef unfortunately let the hotel down badly but gather he is leaving! Slightly dated but it is an older building. Beds very comfortable. Bus stops within a few yards of the hotel with a very good bus service. Would love to have stayed longer and if in the area again would chose the same hotel again like a shot.

    OK so there may be some seagull pooh on a window or two, hard to avoid when you so close to the Beach. The floors may be a bit creaky and there may be a few chips in the paintwork but this is a Hotel with wonderful soul and character. Lovely friendly greeting from helpful guy at reception when checking in. Excellent sea view room with quality furnishing, comfortable bed and that stunning view. What more do you need? Well you get more because the food is wonderful and all the staff were charming, add this to the wonderful ambience, charm and splendor of the public parts of this fantastic old building and you just can't help relaxing and enjoying your self which we we did for the weekend. Will we return? YES like a shot. Well done to all

    This hotel has a great setting right on the seafront and having a bedroom over looking the sea was a plus. The staff are all friendly and helpful but some times individuals lost sight of the main purpose, namely the customer, may be because they had several tasks to full fill at the same time and forgot the priority i.e. the guests. We would certainly use the hotel again, as the stay was generally a good experience.

    The Hotel is reasonably dated and very old fashioned. I find the restaurant and bar food a reasonable standard and value for money. Hotel rooms are usually spacious and again old fashioned in style but I actually find the beds super comfortable which I know is not shared by some of my colleagues. Its a good location by the sea and good for me for work so happy with that.

    We stayed for 3 nights B&B using our Tesco Vouchers. Really enjoyed our stay and found the food to be of good quality and the self service breakfast was excellent. We had dinner in the hotel on 2 nights having duck one night and steak the other, both were very good indeed. However I must comment on the French Malbec we had on both nights, at £21 it was one of the best that I have ever tasted. Worth going there just for the wine. The room was very clean and the view from the bedroom to the beach and the sea was great.

    Stayed here for 2 nights 4-6 April.Very friendly staff & service. Our room 210 was enormous, clean & comfy bed.Breakfast was ok nothing special, but on 2nd morning cloth on table was very dirty!!! Had bar meals on both nights & were excellent. There was a Composer music meeting on the 2nd evening which made it awkward about 20 guests,- - hence there were only about 3-4 others there.The piano was in the lounge so know they could not have had it in another room.( no playing only odd bits ) Parking- 5-6 spaces is limited but was not a problem. We parked behind.

    Arrived here with my mum a week ago yesterday and we were checked in straight away. We had a sea view room which was great and a spacious room with steps to bathroom. The shower wasn't very good though but the bath was good with plenty of hot water. The breakfast is worth having too and a lot of choice with continental and cooked which was a buffet. You can eat in the evening too but not worth it as we did the first night and the vegetables were still raw, you can eat in the bar area which is a little cheaper and not bad at all and also can have room service.

    Booked this hotel on line to stay for the evening with my 2 children, parking was very limited, staff were polite on arrival, after checking in an walking up 4 large flights of stairs, we opened the bedroom door to find a very stale smelling room, very basic decor, curtains held together with Velcro strips and did not want to close All floor boards was creaky and you could hear everything from the room next door, the bathroom looked like it needed a clean and my kids felt very uneasy We headed back downstairs to check out, was charged £40 for the room to be cleaned as we had used it for 10 minutes but given the rest of the money back Would never return to this hotel Very disappointed indeed

    I have just come back from a night stay at the Royal Victoria hotel with the family, when we first walked in, the hotel looked quite glamorous but dated. the bloke on reception was very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately it pretty much went downhill from there. We stayed in a family room, very large and spacious, and the beds were comfortable. Due to checking in at 7pm we dropped our bags and went straight for some drinks and food. the prices were reasonable and the dining area was nice, due to having a young child we ordered food and took it back to the room, we had to wait half an hour for a portion of chips and a pate in an empty restaurant..! the chips were undercooked and pate was not great, whilst the toast was burnt. we didn't bother taking it back as we had already waited long enough. We did not have a great night sleep, partly due to the wind, and the fact the window was ratting all night!!!!! we spoke to our friends who also stayed at the hotel and they had the same problem. due to having a young child, we put up with it as moving rooms in the middle of the night was not an option for us. The next morning we had a cold-warm bath and shower which pretty much summed up the stay. The breakfast was again average, some items cold, bacon under cooked.. For a 3 star hotel we paid £92 for 1 night that included breakfast. we both felt this was overpriced, I appreciate it was a bank holiday weekend but the price tag was simply not justified. The staff here were friendly overall and the views out of the bar area of the sea were nice. Would I stay here again. im going to have to say no on that one, which is a shame because I think this was once a nice hotel, about 30 years ago.

    Broken coffee machine over Easter could not be fixed -why not? very noisy room with single glazing. Very small cramped lift and no offer of assistance with luggage. The quality of the breakfast food needs an immediate review - dreadful!

    We stayed for two nights at this hotel. Parking is free in the street behind the hotel, if you can find a space. The staff is professional and friendly. Rooms are large, clean and quiet, beds comfortable. You get all amenities you expect to find in a Best Western hotel. The only thing missing is a decent light in the bathroom, you never have enough light. Breakfast is served overlooking the sea, and is buffet style. 15min. walk to the old town.

    Me and my husband stayed here from the 22nd till the 25th of March. We loved this hotel I would defently stay here again the breakfast they offer is excellent the staff are lovely as well. I recommend this hotel to anyone who wants to stay in hastings definitely good value for money.

    We were pleasantly surprise with this old hotel. The room was very spacious and warm as was the welcome we received on arrival and in the bar and dining room. Yes, it is dated, but that is a lot of its charm. The views of the sea across the road are an added attraction.

    The presentation of the Hotel is wonderfully English. Kept it's 19th century feel even though it's been modernised. Our suite was clean, roomy and well maintained. The breakfast I couldnt fault at all. Well worth the money we paid, felt satisfied. The only problem is that old fashioned revolving front entrance, not easy to get a push chair through.

    We booked suite room with sea view, but we where a bit disappointed by a few items, even if the overall stay was good. The part of the building we stayed in was freshly repainted, we could still smell it and the hygiene was impeccable, congratulations to the hard working housekeeping team. The downside was the very poor shower head in the bath , the fact that the TV in the suite room is miles away from the bed,and offering a second TV in the room would be advised together with some power outlets as nowadays we need to charge devices... Nice welcome by the staff, free parking, but the restaurant table was very unstable, and breakfast offer could be better, especially the bread and danish selection. Nice pleasant charming stay.

    One night stay with friend en route to Spain by car This hotel whilst a little dated was perfect for our overnight stay in Hastings; being a little dated from 2016 was not necessary a negative; interesting to see little snippets of the past. Booked online - fast and efficient Dinner well above average for price paid Full English buffet breakfast etc etc all again acceptable. It's not 5 star but it doesn't pretend to be and if you were to visit and not pretend you had booked 5 star you will not be disappointed.     Having just returned from a weekend visit to the Royal Victoria Hotel I am pleased to say, it will be our first of many visits. The hotel itself is beautiful and perfectly located for a pleasant promenade walk into Hastings. This was a last minute booking and we were pleasantly surprised to be allocated a suite, which was large, spotlessly clean with a very comfortable bed. The only downside was the shower, which wasn't great, but then a shower off the bath taps rarely is. The breakfast was plentiful, a good choice of both hot and cold food, in fact something for everyone's taste. The staff were friendly and courteous, especially Mark on reception who is a complete asset to the business. However, the fly in the ointment was a middle aged Russian lady who worked in the piano lounge. She was, incidentally, the only member of staff not wearing a name badge. She was rude, discourteous and totally unprofessional. She could certainly benefit from a Customer service course! That said, we would certainly recommend this beautiful hotel and can't wait to return.

    The hotel is lovely and great location,afternoon tea is great value and hone made scones were extremely tasty!however the staff were strange...they offered us another serving of tea/coffee throughout our sandwiches but when we asked 30 mins after we finished our sandwiches they would only give us another tea/coffee I'll we paid extra for it?it was strange they said the reason for this was because they had already run our meal through the till?and the gentleman that originally served us came over and asked how we wells paying half way through our meal so he could sort the bill out before his shift changes?strange people strange they way it is run....but food was good and sea view beautiful,would definitely go again!

    Didn't stay at the hotel but was arranging an event in the Sea Terrace room and I found the staff very helpful and prompt with organising everything. The buffet lunch for our guests was plentiful, of good quality and selection. As it was a cold day they surprised us by offering soup as well which was much appreciated and they didn't hurry us out but enabled us to stay for the whole period of the booking so could chat to guests at leisure. Great view of the sea and pianist was excellent.

    I had booked this directly by phone and had searched it on line with a key criteria being parking facilities, in short the hotel could argue that it has four spaces, but they are pretty much "on street" (the sea front) I am only submitting this report so that others learn to double check web site details before booking I would also like to say that when I arrived and established with staff that there was no secure or nearby parking available to me they were very polite and helpful in terms of orientating me to the area so that we would not be stranded Thank you During the next few days in the general area some local residents also mentioned the website v fact equation

    My girlfriend and I decided to come here for a weekend getaway recently. Check in was very quick, no problems there, the hotel looks fantastic and the location is excellent. Made our way to our room and we were both very pleasantly surprised. Very big room, a big bed and nice and warm. that's about all the good bits I can say really. The bed wasn't the most comfortable in the world. I would say it could do with being replaced. no water pressure at all in the shower. the shower head was too low to even wash my hair comfortably. I'm only just over 6'. we had a meal booked for the first night which I was really looking forward to and this was a massive let down as well. The starters were ok, I had scallops, they were nice but only 3 of them on the plate. My GF had the seafood chowder which she enjoyed. For Mains we both had the Pork Belly. normally one of my favourite meals to have. this was awful. a bit of floppy belly on a plate each. Where's the crackling? to add insult to injury with this there was literally no meat, it was all fat. The veg was nicely done though. Deserts - Crème Brule for me and Fondant for the GF. the Brule was not the best. I cant put my finger on what was wrong with it, but it was edible. The Fondant on the other hand was terrible. it looked like it had fallen apart and been put together again and was dry as anything. we complained about this and was told by the waiter that it is meant to be a dry dish, which was why a dollop of squirty cream was on the side of the plate!!! My GF pointed out that she is a pastry chef to the waiter which then led to the sentence we heard most of for the rest of the weekend "I do apologise" we ended up losing count of how many times this was said to us. They were happy to replace the fondant with a bowl of ice cream instead. Now the breakfasts - full English buffet style. not too difficult you would think and has had many people praising it on here. they kept on running out of everything and I mean everything and if we didn't keep on telling the waiter they had run out again there was no guessing how long it would have taken to them replacing. of course there was lots of "I Do Apologise" going on here. I wont mention the mouldy apple with a wormhole in it in the fruit bowl!! the lack of food and apologies happened both mornings we were there. The Bar does do a nice Shiraz, I cant remember what it was called now, sorry.

    We checked in on a Friday by the charming Mark from Scarborough, A pleasant jolly chap who was most helpful . Our room 304 was superb, quiet, warm , with everything you would want. The cleanliness was first class & easy parking, the lift was very efficient . The breakfast is a superb buffet with superb sausages, bacon eggs black pudding tomatoes hash browns mushrooms toast , all very tasty , not cheap substitutes . The waiting staff were Juan & Graham a great double act, first class service including Juans great knowledge of his native Barcelona !!! Juan considers himself to be a Lionel Messi lookalike !!!! We were checked out by the lovely lively Kylie on Saturday , we told her we thought our room 304 was the best in the hotel. We shall return to this lovely stylish elegant hotel again in the not to distant future, Thanks for a great experience.

    « Cool old glam seaside hotel - character all the way! »

    Booked this as it looked like an old glamourous seaside hotel and it didn't disappoint, full of character, charm and old fabulous features. Rooms are a little tired in places and bathrooms but not worse that to be expected. Our first sea room on the 4th floor (414) was ok but no tv and we got moved as the door wouldn't lock - receptionist did well to move us to a "family room" on the 1st floor which was more like a suite. Dirty February winter weather was great to look out on and seaview room well worth the little extra. Staff were all friendly - though not many of them and the waiter left people waiting at the entrance to the restaurant to be seated whilst he kept his head down serving....a little seaside slapstick comedy and added to that it didn't look like the barmaid and waiter got on particularly well.....PERFECT in many ways for what we wanted and expected.....location is great on the seafront in St Leonards and walkable to Bexhill or Hastings in less bitter weather.

    I had lunch and visited the Royal Victoria hotel, to be honest I wasn't very impressed with the venue, it was clear that some of the decor was outdated and old. The food was OK however the long wait for service kind of killed that mood. The staff were polite but stressed as they advised that they were short staffed.

    Arriving to 5 drunks propping up the bar; swigging cider and lager was a lovely greeting. This was enhanced by the young, naïve receptionist announcing that I was "a single staying in a double room" and then broadcast my room number to the assembled group of inebriated men!! I had to explain to the receptionist that he should change my room and keep the number confidential seemed to shock him. I entered the lift to a row of empty beer bottles. The room was utterly filthy & disgusting from the thick coating of dust on surfaces to the mouldy bathroom and dirty cups, towels and soiled linen. I slept with the chair propped under the door handle. Breakfast was worthy only of a visit from Environmental Health - how could there be a fly floating on the milk in winter ?! All this and I was still expected to pay - I have NEVER had such a distressing and miserable experience. I thought I would be 'protected' by the Best Western brand but discovered that it is actually a privately owned hotel trading under the brand so neither the owner (who astonishingly was on site when this happened, but did nothing!) nor Best Western will be bothered. A warning to other bookers, avoid this dreadful property.

    All the old style features of a grand sea side hotel. Downstairs is very nice in the classic style. I was given a suit on the 5th floor. Nice room with Lounge & bathroom. Shower was very poor. Just worked from the bath taps, so no proper temperature control. Shower head just flops down and points at the wall, so very difficult to get a proper shower, very disappointing.

    Lovely stay at Christmas in a suite. Unfortunately, the hotel is so dated must be from the 50's. Best Western need to get a grip and update this beautiful hotel to the 21st century. The bathrooms are something else, shower that I must have had in my bathroom 30 years ago. One saving grace, the bed was very comfortable.

    I turned up here late on a wet February evening with a gale blowing in off the sea. I was able to park directly outside the hotel and made a dash for the entrance. Once inside, I was surprised to find myself in a rather grand entrance hall; not what I was expecting. The reception staff were very welcoming. My room was further surprise. High ceiling, spacious, pleasant decor, warm and comfortable. Far better than what I have become accustomed to on budget business travel. Well cooked meal in the bar. Good breakfast. Pleasant staff. I would definitely go there again if I get the chance. Only downside: would not take payment by card in the bar for my meal and drinks.

    Booked here for a friends 25 wedding anniversary. We stayed in a suite which was horrible and dirty and the telly was a throw back to the 1970 and didn't work properly. There was a club oppersite was was loud and at chucking out time was just horrendous and there was so much. The breakfast was not good. We couldn't wait to get out of there. Won't be going there again.

    The room wasn't ready when we arrieved (12:30). The hotel is big and dated. The room was big with three beds though we booked two beds. The cold water in the sink didn't work. It tajes a while to go to the city center but it is a nice walk if the weather is good. All in all an ok hotel for one night.

    I booked in here a a few nights and was greeted by a gale when I enetered my room late at night......the sash windows were broken and didn't meet, I realised that there was a bit of a gale outside but I didn't expect a gale in the room too. I had to block the gap with a towel from the bathroom as the guy on the desk was less than helpful...the room was cold too as there was no heating on!! After the room warmed up I did at last get to sleep only to wake to a poor shower experience with hardly any pressure in the hot water.... The only saving grace was a delightful guy serving the breakfasts.....

    Never been to Hastings before so decided to visit friends. Found this hotel online and booked last minute, upon arrival I was disappointed that there was no carpark however parking was not a problem. The room was a great size and everything was provided. We had a great nights sleep, initially we haven't booked a breakfast but decided last minute to eat at the hotel. The breakfast was amazing, I was just upset that my hangover prevented me from eating more. Kaylee (apologies if spelt wrong) was working on reception. She is very knowledgeable, friendly and has a great personality. I don't think people appreciate how many hours people like Kaylee and other staff members work. I will definitely be staying here again!! ??

    We stayed here in January. It's an impressive building and one I walked past, but never went in for 16 years as I grew up nearby. My hubby & I had tickets to see Eddie Izzard at the nearby De La Warr and needed somewhere close to stay. This fit the bill. I was excited to finally get to go in the building! Choc full of original features inside as well as out. Room was large, comfortable and on the 5th floor with a great sea view. Breakfast was nice, and the breakfast room had large Windows spanning the length looking out the sea. The best thing about the hotel was the staff though. Really friendly & helpful. I do kind of wish there was more furniture in our room though- it was a big room. Maybe that's me! The room lent itself to some more cosyness :) One issue though- Parking. It's a pain around there. We were there on a Saturday night so I know that made things worse. But there was none on the roads nearby. However please note there is a car park opposite. This provides free parking between 6pm and 8am. And if you put money in before 6pm, any extra hours paid for carry over to the morning. Worth knowing if you don't want to get up and get a ticket at 8am!

    The over all experience in the hotel was comfortable. I was disappointed that there is no parking facilities as such and we were not happy that we had to leave the car on the road at the back of the hotel, and had to search for free parking space in the back streets.

    Went to a post Christmas party and stayed here. Room we had was a suite through Expedia and it was about £68 but it was a good sized family room with walk in wardrobe, breakfast and the staff were faultless and it was a lovely stay. If the weather had been better it would have been perfect.

    Awful hotel,awful decor, untrained staff,rude,arrogant,ignorant owner. Had meal there, but didn't get to eat it as it wasn't cooked, no one cared and the owner just shrugged his shoulders. I advise everyone to give it a wide berth, everything is dated and it's stuck in the 70s. I have spoken to people since who said they too had bad experiences and would never go back. The current owner should sell it to someone who has the money to invest in it and it could be grand.

    Only stayed one night, but the welcome was friendly and the hotel was smack on the seafront. Lovely room, loads of space and everything was clean tidy and the shower, although over the bath, worked a treat. The restaurant offers a really good menu for the evening meal, and the food is supeb. The breakfast is buffet style, and there's plenty. Lovely sea view from the room, will visit again soon.

    Right on the beach. Historic building. Our invoice was messed up by the hotel system which failed to communicate properly with the booking.com system, but this was resolved satisfactorily. Staff were helpful and helped us with the replacement room (we mistakenly booked twin bed room). Nice restaurants nearby. Pity about the rooms. I was afraid to look closer at our carpet because it had a selection of different hairs from the previous visitors. Bathroom was ok. Windows were dusty, dirty and outside hang a ball of someone's hair O.O Also no a/c, wifi was ok. If they find a way to clean their carpets better, and assuming you stay only for 1-2 nights and take a sea view room, you should be fine. Oh, we tried their breakfast! Not bad, although the guy who was serving it was an interesting fella. Parking was free, although small and we stayed during quiet period.

    The sea views are lovely and the hotel is grand looking from the outside but is very tired. The hotel needs updating throughout and tidying up. The view from my room included paint tins on the roof. The room was was cold and the cold water tap in the room did not work. The waiter also got my breakfast order wrong. The lunch menu was old fashioned cheese and pickle sandwiches, ham and mustard very 1970s like the decor. It was like faulty towers with better staff!!!

    This Hotel is in a very old building the Decor is very tired however it is quite nice for a short stay. There was a number of us staying over night for a wedding. So we did not just see our room. The Room we had was with sea view it was large and comfortable and clean. The only snag was that one window did not fit well and the gale outside was blowing in the room as well. So we kept the curtins pulled at that end of the room. The breakfast served the following morning was very good and so was service

    My wife booked the RVH for my birthday/new years eve. The hotel itself was very nicely decorated and furnished, the piano bar was very comfortable and homely and the staff very friendly. The room was very spacious with nice views across the sea. The only gripe is that for the size of room the double bed could easily have been a king-sized as both myself and my wife found our feet sticking out the end during the night. Plus, there was only a narrow closet which was difficult to get to your clothes if they're at the back, but the room was big enough to house a good sized wardrobe without compromising the living space. Apart from that we had a very pleasant stay.

    The staff were very friendly and welcoming. We only stayed one night because we were visiting family. However, we chose to stay here because we had our wedding reception there 16 years ago. The room was very spacious for four people (2 children and 2 adults). It was comfortable and quiet. The times for breakfast are very reasonable at the weekend- up to 10am. Perfect when you have children. The only problem was the lack of parking as there are only a few outside the hotel. We walked down the hill to the hotel but this was not a problem for us as we are young. The sea view from our window more than made up for this. We also had a beautiful view from the spacious dining room overlooking the sea.

    Checked in 31st December 2015 for 2 nights. Hotel was probably once extremely grand but it's glory has faded and it is looing decidedly shabby. We had a sea view which was absolutely fantastic, however, with no double glazing the room was inclined to be a bit chilly. The room was large and clean but sparsely furnished and the bed was extremely uncomfortable. The staff were very helpful and friendly, nothing was too much trouble. breakfast was fantastic but do not eat evening meal there as it was, frankly, absolutely appalling. Mixed review really but I guess you get what you pay for.

    Charming old Victorian Hotel facing English channel. Overnight stay for 6 before heading to Calais, clean enough with good views on ocean side. Front counter staff and waiters were OK, breakfast was good set in beautiful old long room. good value for autumn stay, although very cold outside.

    This is a lovely old hotel right in the sea front in Hastings. Its comfortable clean and tidy with friendly staff. I had the feeling of going back in time staying among the features of past luxury. The lift interior is made of real wood and not plastic for example. The room we had was very comfortable and we looked out to the sea. It was stylishly decorated and we enjoyed a separate dressing room accessed by a spiral staircase. I am sure that this is not a feature in every room but we did not pay for a superior room or suchlike. I could imagine that each room has some feature that a guest will remember. Most enjoyable stay

    The hotel decor is a bit dated (very 70s) but it's in good enough condition. The bed was really comfortable and it was lovely to fall asleep to the sound of the sea. Plenty of parking on the seafront (free 6pm - 8am). The staff were friendly and helpful. My parents held their golden wedding anniversary here and our family (30+ people) had a fantastic time - the food wasn't bad either. Rooms 401, 402, 403 and 404 have a direct sea view. It's dog friendly too for an extra £10.

    The experience was awful !! The waitress tried to take away our starter plates before we had finished eating. She then placed a dinner plate in middle of table with raw vegetables on. After telling manager he said drinks up to that point would be free even though I had been waiting for some time for a drink. He said vegetables would be replaced, they weren't. I had beef that was thickly sliced and well over cooked. The yorkshire pudding wasn't even cooked properly. I had cheese and biscuits for dessert which i didn't touch, I have thrown better cheese away. All in all it spoilt our Christmas dinner which is sad because we ate there last Christmas and it was excellent. Majority of staff there couldn't understand us either.

    Ignore previous comments about hotel being dated, this is a Victorian Hotel, which has been kept traditional, yes furniture is old fashioned, but so it should be to be in keeping with the period of the hotel, it may be old, but it is not tatty, and that is what counts. We visit the hotel on a regular basis, several times each year, they keep the hotel well decorated, which is a challenge being on the seafront, it is always spotless, and the staff are excellent, a real credit to the Best Western Chain.

    5 star effort on what seemed like a bad day for the hotel. Lunch was slow as apparantly staff hadn't showed up for work, but the staff that were present were going at it at full pelt. Felt so sorry for the manager who was co-ordinating everything in front of us whilst servicing the tables pouring drinks and clearing up. The other staff all looked lost but we're constantly moving get and trying to make the best of a bad job. I've visited a few times and can't say I recognised most of the staff. The food was hot and tasty but not worth the £50 charge by a long shot, and the yes decorations in hotel are dated and cheap and the owner ( a little Korean man who you see occassionally) doesnt seem to care what customers think. I think they had just overstretched themselves and overall let customers down and need a serious rethink about the whole hotel.

    We had tested the food prior to booking and found it really quite nice so felt quite confident in booking our family Christmas lunch. What a disappointment it turned out to be! Zero atmosphere no music and sparce decorations. The food started OK, we were served our starters and they were relatively nice. But 55 minutes after we had finished our starter and half the restaurant had cleared we were forced to go into the kitchen and ask where our food was. The result was bitter sweet as the food the came fairly promptly but was worse that a Wimpy meal at a service station. The beef was so hard it was inedible, it was pot luck if you got Yorkshire pudding or not. The Turkey was edible but tasteless. The roast potatoes were as if they had been kept warm far too long, hard and tepid, conversely the vegetables were hard and undercooked and I'm not talking al dente I'm talking rock hard! Then in the middle of eating our mains a waiter asked us if we were ready for dessert!!!! Then the dessert came, fairly disgusting all round. I won't go into detail I'm ready to purge before I leave!

    How glorious this hotel would have been in Victorian England; the grand staircase, the huge rooms with floor to ceiling views of the sea and the ornate fixtures. It felt a privilege to be staying where Queen Victoria, King George V and Tennyson had stayed. The problem is now though that this magnificent building is a bit cold at night because massive double glazing would look rubbish and Gas central heating would cost a fortune. Also, the restaurant doesn't find much custom for grand banquets and so offers pub grub. Some great, some (spaghetti bolognese) not so great. With signs outside that would suit a Wetherspoons, not a royal hotel. Furniture is beautiful and antique but antique isn't really a quality that you want in a bed, particularly a mattress. In short, I'll be going again but will pack more jumpers, order burgers and wait until the nightly rate is low.

    A very interesting building. There was a very high ceiling in bedroom. The bathroom was not as good despite it's spacious dimensions the tap was wobbly and the bath had mould around the sealant. The food was surprisingly good both in the evening and breakfast.

    Had my gathering of 12 friends and Family for our get together for Christmas. This was the first time that we have been to The Royal Victoria Hotel .We met in the Bar area for a drink first and were entertained with a very good Piano Player which set the tone for a lovely lunch. The staff are very friendly with good service.Well, the Carvery was one of the best we have ever had. Good choices of Lamb, Gammon,Beef and Turkey all Carved by a really nice chatty Chef. The starters and puddings were all generous portions. We will for sure visit again. Love the Marble staircase. There were 4 folk who were due to come that couldnt make it and I feel they missed out on a really good lunch..We are now booked in for a dinner dance next weekend and have booked a room to stay the night. Thank you Anna for helping us with that booking. Looking forward to it..

Very clean, large rooms and bathrooms and very good (and generous breakfast), all with happy helpful staff. Made me look good so very pleased indeed. If I need to stay in Hastings it will be here !

    « Sad, sad tiny coffee machine - unacceptable by today's standards »

    This is a grand, comfortable, historic building where I stopped by for a quick coffee (not a room). They have probably thousands of international guests in a year - & they have a sad, tiny sub-domestic coffee machine which you would feel ashamed to have in your own kitchen at home. The machine was unable to do me a soya latte (even though they had soya milk available!) and I overheard another guest unable to get a simple black coffee (I guess the machine uses cartridges of ready mix!). Us English put up with rubbish coffee but other world travellers are a bit more choosy and the management should invest in a decent Gaggia or similar, as do most cafes these days. The staff are nice & friendly and, I think, feel a little ashamed at what they have to work with.

    I stayed for 1 night in this grand Victorian hotel. All the staff I had dealings with were both happy and helpful. I had a lovely steak for dinner cooked to perfection. My room was at the front of the hotel, and I went to sleep to the sound of the sea. I asked for an extra early breakfast (06:00 am) this was no trouble and was attended to by a very jolly waiter. All in all a great stay. Hope to do it again sometime.

    Stayed here for one night 06-12-2015 to 07-12-2015 and checking in was easy quick and very professional. The interior of the building is just as beautiful as the exterior and was given clear directions on how to find our room. Upon getting to the room both me and my partner were shocked at the size of the room as it was bigger than a studio flat. The staff at the bar and the night porter were extremely friendly and helpful and as for the bed... It was so comfortable. The room was really clean and tidy and the hotel on the whole was also very clean and tidy. The food at breakfast was top notch very hot, pots of tea already made and ready and fresh juice available. I will definately be staying at this hotel. Now some people on here have said how the hotel is in need of paint etc however had they taken time to read the history plaques in the hotel they would of discovered that the hotel is a grade listed building therefore preventing the hotel owners from altering a variety of things in order to keep it to its natural decor. Yes the floorboards creak when people walk about but thats what happens when the place is built in 1828. I would recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a nice stay just outside hastings town centre which is only a 10-20 minute stroll along the seafront. With regards to the parking situation. At the hotel there is a small plot of land about 5 car spaces however the main street is all de restricted and free to park on. Found the whole experience a 9.5/10 rating to be honest. One of the best ive ever stayed at. Looking forward to returning again to Hastings very soon and re visiting this hotel.

    close to the Azur where we had my 50th Birthday party, we had a sea front suite room with an upstairs which the bed was located not sure about sleeping upstairs as had to go downstairs to the bathroom, if stayed again would ask for a flat room. different if you like that i guess, very old Hotel full of lovely character, could do with better showers.

    This is one of the worst hotels I've ever stayed in. My bedroom consisted of two rooms, the bed in one area with a filthy and extremely old en suite, plus a walk in cupboard as a wardrobe, and a second sitting area that was filled with uncomfortable furniture with the tv and kettle etc. Both rooms had inadequate lighting, making it terribly dark and dingy. At breakfast I moved tables 3 times to find a table with a clean tablecloth and the choice of food was very limited. The crockery was old, marked and grey looking and the staff were disinterested. The only positive point is for dog owners - they appear to allow dogs in the hotel as two guests had dogs with them. My booking was for 2 nights but I checked out after just one night and found an alternative hotel. Overall it's a very old and tired hotel that should be closed for refurbishment.

    Had to book a very quick short notice stay. Used the telephone booking service - excellent. Room brilliant and will definitely go back. The hotel is directly opposite the Jazz Club and no need to get a taxi. The staff were very good. The room was lovely and clean. Had a sea view and the only noise was the sound of the waves. No early morning noise that I have experienced in other hotels.

    The hotel was very nice. A warm 'Victorian' appeal to it. The room was massive compared to the modern day hotel rooms. The bar food was average but no more. The staff were helpful. Overall a nice stay. We plan to go back.

    This was a fabulous stay and nothing less than a pleasure. The staff were courteous, well informed and helpful. The hotel is beautifully appointed, sophisticated and historic yet with all the modern amenities you would require. The rooms were spacious, very clean and very comfortable. We tried the room service and it was quick, the food was very good and well presented. The large cocktail lounge/bar area is quite sumptuous, marble pillars and mirrors, grand piano and paintings, with wonderful staff to match. Travelling quite a lot as we do, this I think, especially for the price, is one of the top hotels we have stayed at. We will definitely be staying again and before too long.     10 minutes walk along the seafront from the centre of Hastings. Clean, warm & comfortable. I always sleep with the windows open (& heating off) so always carry earplugs & as I retire reasonably early I usually need them as I did here (but that is nothing unusual that early). A good price for a decent nights sleep.

    We turned up on the spot as we hadn't booked any accommodation in Hastings. All the accommodation was a little over our budget and we really didnt think we would be able to stay here. But it was a week day so they very kindly gave us a discount and let us choose from a few options of great rooms. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. Later we went to the bar at the very last moment before it was due to be closed to find out it was already closed. We phoned reception who told us they could open for us no problem and even bring the drinks to the room although we did go and get them ourselves as felt bad about calling so late. They said we could order anytime no problem. The next morning was very windy and raining and we really did'nt want to check out at 11 as we were not due to an appointment until 12.30. A quick call to reception was all it took for them to immediately let us check out at 12. We had a great stay, great staff, great rooms, all in all an brilliant stay. Thank you

Contrary to the previous reviews we were immediately impressed with the cleanliness of the hotel entrance and our room, the evening meal was excellent as was the breakfast. Parking can be difficult but that is to be expected at a sea front hotel. We will stay there again.

    I was pleasantly surprised by the standard and comfort of this seaside hotel in Hastings. The narrow revolving doors to the reception area hide the pleasant and welcoming smiles of the reception staff. My partner and I had a weekend stay. Our room which overlooked the sea was clean and the bed was comfortable. We were particularly happy with the wardrobe and the heating system. However the bathroom taps require some updating to modern automatic mixer taps for the shower to guard against scolding when operating the shower. The shower curtain is too short for the bath. We did not eat in the hotel. Over all, we would gladly stay in the hotel again. Indeed we are planning making the hotel our base while exploring the Sussex Coast with some of our grandchildren in the 2016 summer. I strongly recommend the hotel to others.     Would not recommend this hotel. Dirty linen, cups and plates in restaurant, bacon and tomatoes were cold when restaurant opened at 8am. Sticky surfaces, and filthy windows in bedroom. Very dark throughout the hotel. Such a shame for a large old hotel.

    This must have been a lovely hotel in its day, but it is somewhat tired now. I chose it because it had a sea view and the Travelodge and Premier Inn did not. One point made by a few other reviewers - if you want to be in Hastings itself, this hotel is not for you as it is about 15 minutes walk away from the town centre. Good points - well decorated common areas, lovely main staircase, sea views to the front, parking, albeit limited, right outside. Suite (actually a twin bedded room with wardrobes at a lower level accessed via a spiral stair) pretty good value, pleasant receptionist, staff mostly helpful. Bad points - The room was a bit tired, with windows that did nothing to reduce the noise from the busy road, and a very small TV. I asked if I needed to book a table for dinner and was advised I should as "We can get busy..." I arrived at the appointed time to find only about 8 people in the room, but they still had to rush around and prepare a table. I had to ask for a wine list, the food was basic - not very well presented and under seasoned. Service was prompt but at the end they put the wrong order (one that attracted a £3 surcharge) on the chit. It was taken off, with much apology, but it made me double-check everything from then on. Breakfast, a help yourself buffet, was below average; leathery sausages, dry bacon, rubber eggs. In summary I would not rush back.

    Stayed here on business recently,and couldnt really recommend to other business travellers who want a low maintenance and high convenience stay. Firstly if you arrive late, parking is very difficult - the small hotel car park always seemed to be full, and surrounding streets were busy with multiple restrictions. The room was quite big, which was good, but the shower alternated between feeble hot and feeble cold without rhyme or reason. Breakfast was shambolic, apart from the outstanding sea view. Turned up at 7.05, with breakfast apparently starting at 7am, but though the hot food was out, and some cereal packets were there, there were no serving implements, no milk, and no fruit. All arrived eventually, necessitating multiple visits to the buffet to find same. The bread was still in the original wrappers, so the serving tongs were fairly pointless, all guests having to use their hands to get to the bottom of the packet to get bread out for toasting. The hot drinks order was taken late, and so what could have been a pleasant but brief pre-work breakfast became a tortuous process. Perhaps if you were staying for leisure, the location, and faded grandeur of the place, might compensate, but it certainly didnt for me.

    Our family of five stayed for one night here. The family room was spacious and clean. The hotel staff couldn't have been more helpful, they were so nice. It is a lovely hotel and very conveniently situated on the seafront.

    « Another excellent visit to this hotel - large comfortable room, friendly staff & fab breakfast! »

    This was my second visit this year, this time it was just my Mother & I, previoiusly I took my Granddaughter too. Booked a twin room and was given a lovely small "suite", which was very roomy and comfortable. The staff are very accommodating & friendly, we arrived a little earlier than expected and they were immediately on the walkie talkie arranging for our room to be ready as soon as possible - which it was.I would not hesitate to return again.

    Reception staff could not have been more helpful.. brilliant service. Bar and restaurant staff had some serious attitude problems though. Room was spacious, clean and good value for money. About a ten to fifteen minute walk along the seafront into Hastings town. Several decent places to eat within a few hundred yards of the hotel, however.

    Very good hotel,great rooms we had brilliant 3 days , as a foodie I found the dining to be of the highest order .Very good staff nothing too much trouble . We will be back,I will recommend this hotel to all our friends.

    I was very surprised to find I had a most excellent meal tonight. After a excellently presented starter I had sirloin steak cooked to perfection M/R as ordered. If they had been hand cooked chips it would receive 10 out of 10 but as the chips are frozen ones (as many places) I will award them a 9. Very good value much better than a well known steak chain. I have paid double for not as good. Very well done to the kitchen team.

    We enjoyed the stay .. Tv was not working but the owner Mr Chen came immediately and fixed it .. location good .. parking so so !! but good value .. interesting place .. better than hotel chains .. good value

    My boyfriend and I stayed in the hotel for 2 nights, we booked a double room. We were on the fourth floor, we had a lovely big room with a beautiful sea view Bed was comfortable (bit small) Bathroom was fine (needed updating) Only downside was that the hotel was nowhere near the arcades or amusements so we had a long walk to get to different places. We paid for breakfast both mornings and it was fine lots to pick from to eat. I managed to get a parking space outside the hotel so I was able to leave my car there everyday which was a bonus. For the amount of money we paid the hotel was fine, we will be back to Hastings, may try a hotel nearer the shops.

    My wife and I decided to take a very last minute break in East Sussex and booked a double room for three nights at the Best Western Royal Victoria Hotel in St Leonards on sea. The hotel building is quite good and must have been very impressive in it's day, it boasts a commanding staircase and entrance leading up to a small lounge area, piano bar and restaurant on the first floor. The restaurant and bar area have good sea views and could provide an enjoyable dining experience On arrival at the hotel we were greeted by a very friendly reception staff. Some of the staff, however, especially in the restaurant and bar area were in serious need of management and training and there seemed to be a general lack of co-ordination between staff members, the word attitude springs to mind. We arrived on a Monday and decided to have dinner in the hotel, this was a mistake. The hotel caters for coach parties and about twenty or thirty members of a tour were being served when we arrived in the restaurant. We were left to wait for our meal until most of the tour had been served, and then made to feel like second class residents, the meat was dry and overcooked and we left most of the meal. We decided to have a pudding, by which time the tour had left the restaurant and the staff started clearing the tables and preparing for breakfast, we completed our pudding amid the clutter of crockery and cutlery. On arrival we enquired as to the timing of breakfast and were advised that it would be available between 7-00 and 9-30 am. After our dinner experience we decided to brave breakfast thinking that it would be difficult to spoil a simple breakfast. How wrong we were. We sat down at 9-00am and a waiter offered us tea or coffee and told us to help ourselves at the breakfast buffet. We were obviously too late, the locusts had been in to breakfast and left three tiny croissants that looked as though they had been picked up and looked at by everyone, I asked if we could have fresh croissants and was advised that there were no more available. The fresh fruit salad bowl was almost empty and looked sad to say the least, there were a few strips of dried up bacon, a few unappealing eggs and the remains of a few tomatoes. We toasted a couple of slices of toast, and left very disgruntled. The waiter agreed not to charge us for the tea and toast. We went into Hastings and had a good breakfast in a local bakery. Breakfast the next day was a little better but far from the standard you would expect from this hotel. Our room was excellent value, we had a large family room with sea view for the special offer price of a double room, very comfortable and warm.

    We stayed in The Royal Victoria to celebrate our wedding anniversary so decided to have a suite with a sea view. The hotel is a wonderful Burton building and it could be so much better. This is the first Best Western we have stayed in but if this is the standard we will not bother again. The room had a lovely view of the sea but the windows were filthy and hardly opened. The room was large but sparsley furnished with dated dark furniture. The bed was small but reasonably comfortable. The bathroom was adequate but needed updating. We decided to eat in the Piano Bar but wished we had gone out. We could have used the homemade burgers to sole our shoes but the chips were good! Breakfast was a strange affair - we hovered waiting to be seated but none of the staff were interested so we found an empty table and sat down, eventually getting the attention of a staff member, who cleared the table and served us. The cooked English breakfast was acceptable but the coffee came by the cup and after asking for two refills, I am sure the third was probably gravy browning not coffee. When we checked out the receptionist asked if we had enjoyed our stay. We pointed out that the meal had not been good and the Piano Bar menu had about ten spelling mistakes on it. He was not that interested but said he had just started work at the hotel and was about to print some new season menus. Let's hope he checked the spelling!

    I wanted a weekend in St Leonards where I lived at the end of the war. It took me about fifteen minutes to walk to the hotel from Warrior Square station. The hotel was just as I imagined. Staff members were very helpful. My room faced a church at the rear of the hotel and was large and quiet. Liked the piano bar with its room of the sea. There were several cafés and restaurants within easy walking distance, especially a small Armenian restaurant on the ground floor of the adjacent Marina Building which we called "The Ship Building back in 1947. The hotel's wifi was good and easy to access. A walk to Hastings took me just under an hour.

    The hotel is lovely, but unfortunately this is where the compliments end. The food is at best average at worst awful..... I eat as part of a club every month and it never changes. How they cook roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings as bad is beyond me. The management is poor and things need to change. Avoid... There are far better places in the town that you can eat at..... Let alone the zero on the good hygiene rating which had been given by the local authority! I would point out that this is my own personal view and not that of the club or the committee, but I know many other members feel the same and share the same views.

    This hotel is really beautiful but sadly not up to standard of the normal Best Western hotels. I stayed here the night before my wedding & for our wedding night. My room suite 212 was large & gave us plenty of room for the bridal party to get ready with a lovely sea view. It is a very warm hotel despite opening the windows it was still quite stuffy. Fellow guests of our wedding stayed here and found some rooms didn't quite come up to expectation. Breakfast was very good but sadly the evening meal left much to be desired and one was returned twice ! Bar staff on the Friday night also was extremely rude. It's a shame as some staff were obviously working really hard only to e let down by the odd few

    Our second one night stop visiting family nearby. Room rate was 12%/15% less than Travelodge/Premier Inn for a last minute online booking and the experience is a world away from the budget hotel chains. For a classic short stay in Hastings/St Leonards this is the place to be. Right on the sea front all public rooms and half the bedrooms have a south facing view of the beach and the horizon. This grand old building is well maintained with clean carpets, high ceilings, original period features and relaxing pastel decoration. The Piano Bar and grand mirrored staircase are a feature of the hotel and you should have a drink or snack in the bar just to soak up the atmosphere. Our room upgrade to a mini suite from a standard double with our Best Western Card was a welcome surprise. Hotel staff were attentive and friendly with personality showing through as well as training. We've experienced a storm and brilliant sunny weather here and could sit in the room for hours watching the world and the ships go by. Sea/south facing rooms are our choice trading the fantastic views for some traffic noise, noticeable late evening and early morning, through the single glazed sash windows. Bathrooms are clean and simple with a slightly too powerful shower that probably needs a larger shower head, or you can just wallow in the cast iron bath. Breakfast buffet was plentiful and tasty with panoramic views of the promenade, joggers, cyclers and two on paddle-boards. With so many good restaurants and cafes within walking distance there is no need for other meals here though the set price menus look good value. A bonus for the 'child' in me was skimming pebbles into the sea, just across the road, before breakfast.

    A wonderful experience. Staff were very, very helpful. Piano lounge & bar wonderful. Location excellent and wonderful view of the sea. Just a short walk to the St. Leonard's train station and about a 25 minute walk to Hastings Station or a very short cab ride.
