« The Butterwick Hospice 'Blitz' Ball »

Once again: An Evening in Convivial Company with Competent Staff at Hardwick Hall; They really do so much more than just Hosting "The Butterwick Hospice" Ball. A night of food and entertainment that was sumptuous and hot; Enthusiastic staff donned 'Forties' garb to enhance themes like 'The Air Raid' slot. We stayed the night, have done before and found the room very spacious; Clean and tidy though dated, it certainly wasn't audacious! Sadly, the tea was cold n tasteless whilst the shower near overflowed; But nothing is ever perfect and these 'niggles' Were all that showed. An awesome Hotel in which dine or hold a larger function; Not far from the A1 North or South, near Sedgefield, a convenient junction. Outside the Autumn leaves have fallen, the Lake looks rather cold; Yet if you enjoy a walk there's a nearby park, should you wish to be so bold.

    « A surprise venue »

We met for a family get together and the service, food and rooms were excellent. Our room was very large, warm and comfortable with modern large bathroom. We ate in the bar lounge and food presentation and quantity was very good.Breakfast was cooked to order and was served on really hot plates, one of the best hotel breakfasts we've had! The grounds are stunning and ideal for a leisurely walk. Only downside, there are no spa facilities otherwise would have given 5 stars

    « Enjoyable stay »

Stayed one night while visiting Sedgefield races.Arrived early and told the desk that we were leaving the car, thinking the room would not be ready. We were given an upgraded deluxe room that was free so we could leave our bags and freshen up.No trouble to order us a taxi either. Arrived back tired but soon revitalised in the excellent shower. Had dinner in the Rib room which was very good once we agreed on what was medium and well done between us and the kitchen.(The first attempt at well done was still bloody) Excellent nights sleep in spacious comfy bed. Good views from the room over the park and lake. Everything you could want for breakfast , cereals, juice, toast and cooked to order(therefore hot)full english. Good place to stopover when visiting the area.Would definitely return.

« Very average . Friendly staff but very poor food. »

A strange place. Potential to be better than it was. The room was a good size and comfortable but the strong smell of disinfectant was off putting. The free standing bath was not a pretty claw foot bath that is meant to be free standing , rather it was an ordinary bath without the side panels stood in a metal frame. There was just something lacking about the whole place. Paintings of dogs in costume and a life size statue of a butler does not make somewhere look classy. The price seemed a bargain but not after a very poor standard of food for dinner and breakfast. OK if you are travelling and just want to lay your head down but eat elsewhere. The staff were all very polite and friendly.

« Stunning grounds, great value and service »

Stayed here to attend a wedding. The hotel is set in fantastic grounds and is complimented by great staff throughout the hotel. The room felt like like it's been recently renovated and is modern but kept a very traditional and in keeping feel to it. The bathroom was particularly good. Breakfast was good the next morning, check out hassle free etc. Overall a great experience. Will certainly be staying again

    « Exquisite location »

Another stay at this glorious establishment. The staff are delightful, helpful and very happy at all times. The building is sympathetically decorated throughout. The grounds at this hotel are absolutely breath taking. There was even a helicopter there the one day, as a couple were getting married there.

    « Beautiful Hidden Gem »

This Hotel is beautiful set in its own grounds, the rooms are elegant and very clean and tidy, I just loved everything about it. The staff are really friendly and helpful. To top it of I got a free upgrade, the restuarant serves 1st class food and is very comfortable, I just can't praise this Hotel enough I loved the place. Going to Durham stay here..

    « tea not included »

the website advertises afternoon tea served on fine bone china designed by Ted Baker and Served in the Boyne Room which features oil painted ceilings and ornate cornices; and views overlooking Hardwick Park lake.when we arrived we were seated in the bar with no outside views at all. we chose the very northern tea which i must say was very nice but alas came on plain white crockery not fine bone chine, and when the bill came we were rather disappointed that the price of nearly £20 per person did not even include the two pots of tea which were charged separately.

    « Last minute need for a room !! »

My method of transport on The day was becoming an issue because of weather. I was close by - called up and the staff could not have been more helpful about providing a room. I arrived checked in all super swiftly and a flat rate for a drop in. Later in I visited the steakhouse and it was superb quality and good value. A great comfy bed and lovely Haddock breakfast. It may not be 5 star accommodation but very clean, very decent friendly staff and excellent value for money food. I'll be back !

    « Weekend Break »

Booked Hardwick Hall for a 2 night stay as we were attending a wedding in the area what a fabulous place friendly and helpful staff, our room was extremely comfortable and clean. We would recommend this place to everyone as it was such good value. Will be returning again next year.

    « Birthday treat »

My husband booked a night here for my Birthday. We stayed in room 306 a premier room. Initial impressions were good, a large room with lovely views overlooking the lake of Hardwick park. The bathroom was huge with a freestanding bath and walk in shower with jets. What let it down slightly for me was the room seemed slightly dated and had a mismatch of furniture. The chair also had a rip in its cover. Now for the price you are paying for a premier room you don't expect this. It also wasn't cleaned to a high standard with cobwebs along the walls and hairs in the bath and the carpets hadn't been hoovered. I was also disappointed with the breakfast. It states it is freshly cooked but it obviously isn't as the beans had started to dry up on the plate and the bacon was like rubber. The egg was also hard and sat in grease not pleasant. The fresh fruit salad was nice that was it. The room has a fridge in but it still only offered UHT milk and when we asked for some more milk it took over half an hour to arrive and it was still only UHT, you would expect some fresh milk at these prices. Overall overpriced for the service it delivers.

    « Nice but tired »

Stayed here for 1 night in a premier room 306 with breakfast. Room was ver big with large shower and free standing bath. Bed huge and comfy with fridge , sound system and 3 windows giving lovely views to the lake and greens. Mentioned was fruit and sweets in your room we got 2 apples and 5 foxes glacier mints! I know this hotel is big on functions and gets well used but in the room we had a ripped chair which could be been recovered easily and around the room were marks here and there which didn't bother me but would to some people staying. Generally the hotel is a bit tired and some curtains , decorations around need modernising. We had a sandwich and drinks in hotel which were nice and breakfast which was included. It is served from kitchen but it looked like it is kept warm and not freshly cooked. I would not pay £12-95 for it separate as it was just an average breakfast but filling. Would I stay here again , probably yes as lovely views and walks around grounds but probably only if it had a refurbishment.

    « Birthday treat, a bit disappointed »

We have stayed at hardwick hall many times for our wedding party on return from Cyprus & for our birthdays etc. On our last visit however we were disappointed as we were put in a lovely room could not complain about the room or service we received however it wasn't until we went to bed at about 8.30, I know this is early but we have an 18 month old son, that we realised we had been put in a room next door to a hen do the night before the wedding, they were still partying at 2ish in the morning which not only kept us awake but kept disturbing our son as they were playing music

« Good place to stay »

Overnight stay on our way to Durham. Very welcoming staff who were happy to juggle our two rooms around so we were close to each other. Spacious and comfortable rooms. Good breakfasts. All at a very reasonable price.

    « Oyster Festival »

A group of 8 of us attended the Oyster festival, living local I know the hotel inside out but I must admit the way they transformed it for the Oyster festival was first class. From the champagne reception through to the meal everything was spot on, 1300 people seated in a marquee that inside didn't feel like one. Top class entertainment and plenty to eat and drink was enjoyed. Would I go again, most definitely!

    « Very pleasant »

This hotel is very pleasant. We stayed here for two nights and found the rooms very comfortable and spacious. (We were on the ground floor/basement level). It was a quiet room looking out over the garden area. The bed was very large (like 2 doubles put together) - relatively comfortable but probably a bit too firm for my liking. There was 2 pillows each - but these were rather solid. The bathroom was huge with a large deep freestanding bath and separate large shower and two sinks. We did eat in the hotel on one night - but to be honest we have had better hotel food elsewhere. If you are not into steak or fish then you will find the menu rather limited. The cheese soufflé was not light at all - it was solid and very heavy going. There was a group of us and the hotel struggled to get the preordered food right. The staff were friendly and helpful and did their best to look after us. The grounds are lovely and worth a walk around if the weather is kind.

    « 4* hotel at a 5* price »

I was very much looking forward to my stay but, at £119 per night, my expectations were fairly high. This hotel is a lovely building with beautiful grounds. Reception staff were friendly and my first impression of the room was very positive. There was a four post bed which, as well as looking good, proved to offer a great night sleep since it was very comfortable. The bathroom appeared to be recently refurbished and was clean. I decided to order a burger at the bar the first night of my stay. I was impressed with the food but less so with the emerging inconsistent service. Our side orders arrived towards the end of our main courses which was not ideal. One of the bar staff seemed a little stressed when ordering drinks too. We did warm to his quirkiness as the weekend went on but I wouldn't have described him as the most professional person in the world. One issue I had with my room was the bathroom door. It was a wooden door with frosted glass panels which didn't offer much privacy. It also didn't shut that well. The hotel is busy with weddings and events so if you are looking for tranquillity, this is not the place for you. I enjoyed my stay. The room was a pleasure to return to after a long day but I question whether it was really good value for money.

    « A-mazing hotel overall »

Stayed here for 2 nights whilst attending a wedding. The hotel is like a maze when trying to get from the guest rooms to the function rooms but thankfully the staff were on hand to advise the quickest routes to get around. Stayed in Room 112 which is one of the Suites and had been recently refurbished. The bed was very comfy and the bathroom was large with two sinks, oversized bath and multi spray shower separate. If staying in this room, be aware that you can see into the bathroom from the bedroom due to glass in the door and also the blind did not cover the full window so we resorted to using the bath mat to cover the gap. On the first morning we ordered breakfast in bed which was delivered at the requested time by the most friendliest and happiest staff member have come across whilst staying here. The food was hot and nicely presented. However on the second morning, we had breakfast in the main restaurant and whilst the Full English breakfast was nice, it was barely warm which was a slight disappointment. Overall a lovely hotel, with friendly and helpful staff and will definitely stop here again

    « Perfect wedding venue »

We have just had our wedding at Hardwick Hall and loved every minute of it. My husband and I had looked around a lot of venues to have our wedding reception at. Hardwick hall was by far our favouite choice. The wedding planners were outstanding, helping us plan our special day all the way. Nothing was any trouble to them. On the day itself we arrived at the hotel from the church in plenty of time but over run on the photos, resulting in us sitting down for the wedding breakfast. This did not seem a problem to the staff and they were so helpful and friendly. Food was lovely and great service. We had a premier room on the night of our wedding g and it was gorgeous and very big. Bathroom was lovely and big too. Would certainly recommend this hotel for both a wedding or a overnight stay.

    « perfect »

I stay at this hotel fairly regular, but I felt that I need to say how I am impressed by this hotel. Fantastic location, free parking and great check in, it really is stress free hoteling. Hearty congratulations to the person who designs the rooms, fantastic is a word not out of place for Hardwick Hall, the staff are most generous too, I was leaving my room and met guy who was servicing the room, we engaged in conversation and asked me was I having to travel far, when I said yes he disappeared and the reappeared with two bottles of water for my journey. Touches like that will bring me back time and time again. Thank you to all who work at this hotel.

    « 1st Class! »

Stayed overnight here whilst visiting Sedgefield races. Set in beautiful grounds that are very well kept. Huge room and stunning bathroom with roll top bath, 2 sinks, loo and whopping great shower. Xtra large kingsized bed was really comfy. Booked into The Rib Room(hotels steakhouse) for dinner. The food served was gorgeous, the highlight being the 20oz ribeye steak, the service being excellent too. Breakfast the following morning was also very good. Front of house staff were very helpful and welcoming. All in all a truly wonderful experience. Thank you all.

    « nice hotel »

stopped at this hotel to attend a wedding and had a family deluxe room. the hotel is very nice clean and tidy, the staff are all very polite and helpful. the bedrooms and bathrooms are excellent. the only issue with this hotel is he price of drinks at the bar. seriously I have paid less in the London than they want. out of all the places I have stopped including with work the drinks where he highest by a long way. I can't see how a hotel in the north east can justify these prices. even the staff agreed so take your own drink and smuggle it in as most people at the wedding did. the only other comments is more a personal thing, but this day and age find it surprising that the waitresses are wearing very very short exceptionally tight skirts

    « Beautiful large rooms »

Stayed here recently. Lovely hotel in gorgeous grounds very scenic. The rooms are large and luxurious bed ever so comfy. The thing that spoiled it was breakfast, poached eggs hard and overdone, bacon low quality fatty and undercooked looked like a transport cafe breakfast, not one of such a hotel. We were at a function walked into hotel reception at 2am someone has been sick this was covered up the smell was horrendous but just a warning triangle near it. An hour later we went to bed and had to walk past the vomit come on staff don't leave it there when you have customers in the bar it's enough to put anyone off.

    « Wedding annive »

We were married at Hardwick last year and wanted to celebrate our first wedding anniversary in the fabulous hotel. We were able to order the same bespoke meal that we'd had for our wedding breakfast. From the moment we checked in we enjoyed first class service and were upgraded to a beautiful room opposite the lake. Special mention to the maitre d in the restaurant who was excellent and had reserved a lovely table in a perfect setting. We were greeted with a glass of champagne as we arrived. The food was absolutely superb & I enjoyed the best nut roast I've ever eaten. All the staff were really professional, pleasant & attentive and the service was amazing . We were presented with a lovely surprise in chocolate at the end of the meal which made the evening perfect. Thanks so much for making our anniversary so special & we'll definitely be back next year.

« Great surroundings but one or two niggles! »

Really handsome building and parkland but once inside it becomes apparent that money is needed to be spent. To be fair, they have done up some rooms and the bathrooms are fabulous in the 2 Premier rooms we saw. Unfortunately, the bedroom we had was poorly furnished with worn, clashing items which rather ruined the whole effect. The staff were great but the food in the bar adequate at best. Breakfast was better.

    « Great location »

Stayed here on Saturday and initially found it difficult to find a parking space. The driveway was blocked with hoards of wedding guests who were reluctant to move so we could drive past them to find a space at the rear of the hotel. The hotel was fully booked (there were 2 weddings and 1 golden wedding on the day) and we were given room 401 (no other rooms available) which has to be the smallest room I've ever stayed in. The bathroom was no bigger than a closet with only a 1-2mm clearance on opening the door straight onto the loo. There was nowhere to place your wash bag or your tooth brush, unless you used the rim of the bath. There was no loo roll holder on the wall (it would have stuck in your ribcage when using the loo) and the roll was placed on the tiny shelf behind the toilet alongside the usual hotel lotions & potions bottles. Very peculiar! The room window overlooked the roof tops of other parts of the hotel and down into one of the function rooms which due to the functions and their discos made opening the window for fresh air prohibitive due to the noise. We ate in the rib room and the service was fabulous, the food excellent. We ordered crab and crispy squid for starters and both had the Hardwick burgers with chips for mains. No room for pudding. The food was delicious. The bar service afterwards was a bit hit and miss and I was left with the impression we were disturbing the staff by wanting to order drinks or engage them in conversation about the local area. (We had journeyed +2hrs by car so were interested). There were quite a few rowdy wedding guests about and 1 in particular was tearing the ear off a member of staff the following morning, who was trying to placate him by offering a free breakfast/meal on their next visit but the chap was having none of it. I don't know why he was so upset but it was very embarrassing. The hotel have clearly set their stall out as a wedding/events venue and you have to accept this and put up everything that goes along with it. Had I paid greater attention I would perhaps not have chosen this hotel because of that. Tip do not stay in room 401, and wouldn't recommend 402 or 403 who were next door and probably the same minute size. Overall I would give 3 stars. It was a business related overnight stay so acceptable as we were heading off early the next morning.

    « Fantastic »

We stayed here for one night while attending a wedding venue there. The rooms were very reasonably priced, clean and nicely decorated. The views are amazing overlooking the lake, and the gardens are beautiful. The staff were very pleasant and extremely helpful. The full English breakfast was very nice, just exactly what you would expect in this type of Country Hotel. Overall, I highly recommend it.

    « Our amazing wedding »

On Friday 9th September my partner and I had our wedding here at the hardwick hall hotel. I cannot stress enough how amazing my day was from start to finish. Firstly the two girls Chloe and Jenna were truly fantastic their professionalism put my mind at rest even with a few last minute changes that didn't phase them, Chloe stayed back at least an hour after her shift finished just to make sure all my wedding stuff was put in the right places! Nothing was too much for them they need a medal! As the day came John Hill the manager was our master of ceremonies, he made the day for us, he was like a shadow, no matter what we needed he was there, topping up drinks, clearing up, making the speeches a lot less nerve racking, made sure everybody had everything they needed! He was an absolute god send the whole night I cannot ever thank him enough for making our day the best day of our lives. The food was one of the best meals we have ever had, drinks were flowing all evening, the staff were so attentive there was hardly an empty glass in sight! Onto the rooms...WOW THE BRIDAL SUITE I didn't want to go home it was beautiful, spacious, clean and had a huge bathroom it was so luxurious I have many photos on my phone of the shower hahaha! All in all if you want a 5* experience whether it be a romantic break, a meal or a wedding you will not be disappointed John hill and his staff will ensure you have an amazing experience. Thank you so much Mr and Mrs Davidson

    « A wedding »

The room smelt very foisty on arrival, the bathroom had lime scale around it.Bathroom was very basic including a bath with shower over not impressed at all and defiantly will not be returning I have tried numerous times to contact hotel calling and emailing and I have had no response at all . The customer service at this hotel is very poor .

    2
    « Embarrassed »

Firstly I must say the food for the most part was delicious. The ribs as starter excellent & the steaks were awesome. The problem was that the chef failed to deliver a vinegar free meal as requested. My partner has an allergy to vinegar which we informed the waitress of. The starter arrived with a dressing of balsamic vinegar!! This was soon rectified, but we were so disappointed when the main course arrived also with a balsamic dressing! We were assured that the sauce ordered to go with the steak did not contain vinegar however it did & caused an uncomfortable reaction. This was a birthday celebration that was ruined by unprofessional communication. The evening was also spoiled by the head waiter reprimanding the waitress rather loudly in front of diners, not once but several times.

    « Wow what a room. »

This was a last minute booking so we wasn't expecting much. On arrival the staff were great. We were offered a room near reception or one on a different floor. We took the one by reception without even seeing it and it was a pleasant surprise. It was an accessible room with a roll in shower. The bed was a super king and comfortable. The view was of the lake which again was beautiful. The bar was expensive and not so friendly, it also didn't have any bar snacks. Which after coming in after a busy evening would have been nice. Bag of nut or crisps can sooth hunger. The breakfast had lots of choice although the haddock and poached egg was not great. Overlooked (both) and pretty tasteless. My partner had the full English breakfast and said it was okay.... had they had fruit available then I would have wondered why it wasn't a 5 star hotel, but the breakfast explained it.

« Cracking hotel in beautiful surroundings »

We booked a two night stay here to visit my daughter and family. Originally we were given a small room overlooking the kitchen roof which was not ideal. The room was very hot and we were unable to open the windows because of the noise and smell from the kitchen extract fans. We were advise that the hotel was fully booked and no other rooms were available. I would have changed hotels if it were possible but it was late at night and I could not find a handy alternative. We were moved next day to a much better room which was more spacious, had a much bigger bed and overlooked the gardens. The food was very good and reasonably priced, as was the drinks.Breakfast was a really substantial meal which set us up for the rest of the day. The hotel oozed character and apart from the original room I could not find fault. Given the opportunity I would probably stay here again.

    4
    « Quiet break »

The hotel is in a lovely setting, providing the relaxing break we were after. The room was large and we'll furnished, while the bathroom had a glorious bath tub to soak in. Breakfast was a bit hit and miss - the fruit and yoghurt were tremendous but the cooked breakfast was distinctly average. Good value for money and would stay again.

« Nearly spoilt by numerous weddings, but a happy ending »

Our room was fabulous, the grounds wonderful, breakfast delicious, bar food tasty, service excellent BUT too many weddings with guests everywhere. We were overwhelmed by the wedding parties on arrival . Everything else was great. We would stay at Hardwick Hall again. I wish they would remove 'the life size butler, with broken fingers' in the reception.

    « Wedding day »

Stayed at Hardwick Hall on Saturday 27th of August for the wedding of our nephew Christopher and bride to be Laura. Arrived at lunch time and room was ready before the wedding at 13.30. Room was impressive for the £130 including breakfast. Tap was loose and damaged on the bath but no other complaints. Wedding was a marvellous occasion throughout the whole day. Beautifully sunny day , superb company and food was gorgeous both on the day and night time. Staff attitude and manners were impeccable at the wedding and in both bars, nothing was too much trouble. Great day and will return.

    « Spoiled by the revelry . . . »

It's been some time since we dined at Hardwick Hall but we returned this week for a special birthday celebration ? mine! Yet again, it proved a good choice ? though, at one stage, it looked as though we were destined for a disastrous evening. A party of revellers who had clearly spent some time at the bar upstairs filled the restaurant area close by with incredibly loud conversation and laughter which, by any standard, was completely unacceptable. The staff moved us to another table and all went well from then on. My lamb was superb, my wife praised the belly pork, and our two friends were delighted with their fish and steak choices. The desserts (treacle tart in my case) were equally wonderful. Full marks to the young team on duty last night. They were a credit to the hotel.

« Good hotel looking over a country park »

Stayed here on a last minute deal so was very good value. The room decor was looking a little tired but everything worked and the bed was sooooo comfy. Nice touches were bottled water, fruit and a bowl of mints, along with the usual tea making tray. The shower was really powerful and the towels were soft and fluffy. From our room we could see over the lake and although we were at the front and there was a wedding party on, it was not too noisy. We ate in the bar and the food was good, and the breakfast was really tasty, from a local butcher. There is a country park just outside the fence, ideal for a stroll before dinner, and after breakfast! Would definitely stay here again.

    « Sleepless night »

Booked a deal for 1 night at Hardwick (stayed on many other occasions). Dropped bags off at hotel and returned after an evening out to find heating could not be switched off. Heat in room was unbearable and took 40 minutes to get reception to answer phone (told they had forgot to switch the night phone on) and bring up a fan at about 12.30. They promised to switch off heating in boiler room but it stayed on for hours afterwards, even with window and curtains open too hot to sleep. To make it even worse the TV was pixilating and had only half of the channels working (porter apologised but did not fix or offer an alternative). Room was generally clean but wallpaper was peeling off ceiling and there were many visible cobwebs (as photos). Bath tap was loose and plug did not fit so it could not be filled (shower was good though). We handed in a feedback form and informed reception that they should not let out that room until it was fixed up. All in all a very poor level of room and service.

    « Double rooms not 4 star »

Stayed in room 401. The room is small, especially the bathroom. The door cannot be opened or closed if someone is using the toilet. This is the first hotel room I have ever seen without a toilet roll holder. The roll just sits on a shelf behind you or wherever you want to put it ? Lying on the bed and the wallpapered ceiling is disgraceful, with bits of paper hanging down everywhere. A bit of timber edging was also hanging off the wardrobe. The view from the window is pretty ordinary and overlooks a flat roof and a small courtyard with no chance of looking at the lake or grounds. Due to the proximity to the function rooms forget about a restful nights sleep as the loud music went on until just after midnight. Maybe the windows need to be double glazed. The tv was on when we arrived but we could not get a picture, just a number 44 floating around the screen. We advised reception who said they would get it looked at. Three hours later and it still didn't work. Ended up switching it off at the plug and waited a while and it worked, albeit with terrible intermittent picture and sound. It was disappointing that we had to resort to DIY and no follow up from staff. Relatives who also stayed had been given better quality rooms which to be fair would rate at 4 star however the double rooms or at least this one would be nowhere near that rating and desperately in need of some work.

« Excellent Cream Tea, Excellent Waitress »

We came for afternoon tea expecting a Run-of-the-mill affair, but we were surprised by the Waitress and the quality of the tea. Waiting staff these days tend to be poorly trained students but our Waitress was a true professional. Attentive and informative without being intrusive, conversational and humorous but always professional, efficient and confident. The food was excellent and more abundant than expected. The warm, mimi Wellington at the beginning was a clever and delicious touch; the Rhubarb Tea recommendation by the Waitress was inspired. Go here and have the Afternoon Tea, you won't be disappointed.

    « Rib Room »

Had a beautiful meal in the Rib Room, steak cooked gorgeous. I was a bit baffled as it was quiet when we visited, I had tried to make a reservation a few days before and were told they were fully booked and could go the Saturday if we wanted. This was the night we had childcare so wasn't a helpful suggestion. We had booked to go somewhere else but by chance phoned an hour before and we could get in. Food is lovely and service was good. We returned a few days later for a bar meal after having a walk around the park. The chips were not as nice on this visit and were dried out. Its not cheap to eat here but when we have visited over the years(apart from the chips on last visit) we have enjoyed it.

Lovely room for the cream tea. Beautiful china and linen table clothes. Service was excellent the waitress was so attentive she couldn't have been better. Sandwiches and scones and cakes really good. Lovely selection of teas I would definitely recommend the rhubarb tea.

The photos on the website don't do the rooms justice! The room was fantastic the hotel staff were accommodating and friendly. Only one fault the meal in the steak restaurant was ok not fantastic very overpriced for what you get. Hence only 4 stars not 5.

« Quiet hotel with beautiful grounds and a lake »

Only stayed overnight, but we will go again. Beautiful old hall, but modernised into a good country hotel. Excellent bathroom and fittngs, luxury tiling and design. Very quiet room overlooking the lake and the grounds. We were woken in the morning by ducks swimming on the lake. Lovely!

    « Lovely Location »

Had a nice two night stay in a Premier Room (206), these are the larger well appointed rooms with huge bathrooms and excellent facilities. The grounds around the hotel are vast providing direct access into the adjacent parkland which is also a local attraction and has many visitors who come for a day out to picnic, jog or otherwise look around the area, there is a large car park for these visitors which is well away from the hotel area. The hotel interior decor is a little dated and in places looks tired around the edges. The hotel has very large function rooms and is no doubt a popular wedding venue as well as other events with theme nights and famous entertainers attending, fortunately none of these events were taking place during our stay and any disturbance they may bring was avoided. All staff we encountered were friendly and helpful, breakfast was a buffet with the cooked breakfast served at your table from the menu. Whilst we were there we dined in the Rib Room which provides the same menu as the Rib Room at Ramside Hall Hotel near Durham, which is part of the same group. We have dined at both locations and found the food, steaks in particularly, equally good.

« Great rooms food and staff »

We booked a "stay and dine"package. It was excellent value, just remember that the generous food allowance is for food. We had a delicious steak in the "Rib room".Our room was large and very comfortable. The staff were very pleasant. We would return.

« Our stay at Hardwick Hall »

An easy drive from the A1(M), easy to find, lovely grounds, good welcome at reception room although a little small was well appointed but only onme dining chair a disappointment.. We had afternoon tea very nice served by a young lady with a very jovial attitude and this helped to make it an occasion Good breakfast and a final walk around the grounds finished off a lovely overnights stay. Watch out we may be back.

« Spoil By The Disco »

Just spent a night at the hotel, first impression were very good less the wifi which in room 212 we never got until we hit reception. The room was very well served and very clean and spacious, the room facilities were high end and the furniture very tasteful. The nearby country park is a massive plus and the walks an absolute pleasure. We booked in on a Sunday afternoon, went to the bar and asked for a sandwich and were told there was only a Sunday lunch and they were fully booked, no preferential treatment for guest, this was very disappointing as even in the wilds of the U.K. I have managed to get a snack in much smaller establishments? We went to the Dun Cow in nearby Sedgefield and had a great meal. Everything was going really well until about 2000 hrs when the full thud of the disco started which went on until midnight, no sleep. We were apparently booked into room 206 which would have spared us the noise but it wasn't ready when we booked in, I wish the receptionist had the forethought to tell us!! Good hotel let down by wifi and noise, my advice is not to stay there when a disco is on or don't get a room at the back of the hotel, to add insult to events the blinds in the bathroom which overlooked the back of the entertainment area did not work properly?

Beautiful historic building in a gorgeous setting. Room was large and the bathroom was huge, with 2 hand basins, a roll top bath and massive shower! Very generous breakfast and very efficient friendly service. We ate in the grill restaurant on both evenings. One of the best steaks we've ever had! Would definitely stay again if ever in the area.

    « Lovely welcoming hotel »

Booked a room last minute for some much needed R&R. Wonderful friendly staff make a very welcome change to the usual corporate hotel staff. Made to feel at home the moment you walk in the door. From the reception, the restaurant staff and the people in the bar all very welcoming and engaging with the hotel guests. Lovely to see and rare these days. Real family atmosphere. Rooms large , very clean and huge bathroom with Roll top bath in our deluxe room. Grounds well maintained and lovely to go for a stroll around the lake before dinner. In my experience don't confuse this hotel with the usual fare. Restaurant food good, I had the Halibut, my wife a steak, both well cooked and served by smiling staff. Good wine list slightly on the pricey side but no problem when it's served with a smile. Really can't fault, for not much more for B&B than what you'd pay in a cheap Premier Inn etc really does show how a good hotel should be run. Keep up the good work, we will be back

    « Sunday Lunch »

Went for Sunday Lunch to celebrate Birthday. Although we live close by this was our first visit. Stunning hotel set in beautiful gardens. We had a drink in the bar while we studied the menu. Ample choice to cover all requirements. We were shown through to the Dinning Room. It was very busy, all tables taken. The food was superb. I enjoyed the Lamb which was perfectly cooked. My wife enjoyed the roast beef. We did not have starters but were spoil t for choice with the desserts. The staff were very efficient and friendly. Will be back again soon. As it was a nice sunny day we enjoyed a walk round the lake after lunch.

I've been staying at The Hardwick Hall on business for years now and never once been let down... The staff, food and rooms are very good! I've seen many different functions from Weddings to Music events and never once have these encroached on the lone resident. In fact the events are so well organised and the hotel and grounds are so spacious it is a pleasure to see such organisation. 10/10.

« Nice stay disappointing booking experience »

I booked an overnight stay for my parents to celebrate their wedding anniversary. They thoroughly enjoyed their stay, I booked them into the deluxe room they said the room was fabulous. My experience while booking this was very disappointing. I booked this over the phone, as I was giving the gentlemen the relevant details I explained to him how to spell my fathers name as it is never spelt correctly anywhere and the gentlemen sniggered down the phone which offended me. After the booking had been made the gentlemen said my receipt would be posted out to me and I am still waiting for it. I contacted the hotel over email to see if my receipt had been posted and they emailed back with my receipt attached but they didn't say whether or not it had been posted, I needed to get to the post before my parents got to it so it didn't ruin the surprise so I ended up spending every day trying to get to the post first. I then contacted the hotel as I forgot to ask whether the room would be a double they then sent me another email with different information on it with no explanation and my question unanswered. I checked the details as it said to and breakfast hadn't been included so I then had to contact them again to make sure breakfast was included and to get them to answer my question. The reply I got finally gave me all of the information I needed. This is the second time I have had a bad experience with this hotel but I didn't want to say anything until after my parents had visited as I didn't want to spoil their visit.

    « FAB WEDDING VENUE »

Just held our daughter's wedding here (Sat Aug 6th.. Laura & Jonathon) and cannot fault a thing. Our thanks go to Chloe ( events organiser) for ensuring our day ran smoothly without a hitch and to all the other staff who were helpful and obliging. The Coleman Suite (1 & 2) was perfectly set out and was more than we could have hoped for, along with the the food which was tasty and highly satisfying. Many or our wedding party guests stayed overnight (including ourselves) and we all had a most enjoyable stay commenting in particular on the larger than average, luxurious rooms with the most spacious comfortable beds. We had rooms 203/204 which are on the ground floor overlooking the beautiful parkland. There is also a good choice for breakfast in the mornings with waitress service for cooked options. We are truly greatful to the Hardwick Hall for helping to make our daughter & son-in law's wedding day such a memorable occasion.

Grounds are beautiful, my room was huge on the ground floor, bath was fabulous. Staff were very nice. Great selection for breakfast. I was at a wedding and cannot fault the meal it was gorgeous. However I am gluten free and they were advised, they tried but felt like it was a last minute thought. Beds are sooooo comfortable. My room key continuously needed re swiped to gain access, apart from that I had a great stay and would stay again.

Stayed for one night as a wedding guest. Went for the deluxe room as only a little more than standard. Room was really big with a wow bathroom; lovely deep roll top bath that I had to make time for before I checked out! My only issue was as I was at the wedding I didn't really make the best of the luxury of this room! We were in the marquee and I think this is a good option for the wedding as you are separate to any other weddings that day. Breakfast selection was good, fresh fruit and cooked to order full English.

    « CAN'T WAIT TO GO BACK »

Three of us have stayed at the Hardwick 3 times since March and are due to go again next Saturday. We love to get away for a night in a hotel and a good meal as a treat and we think we've found the perfect place. The staff are absolutely fantastic and will go out of their way to make sure everything is as you want it. We always book 2 rooms and they always put us as near to each other as possible which is great. We've stayed on 3 different floors but prefer the 1st floor for the view of the gardens. The rib room restaurant is fantastic and the staff are lovely, we cannot fault the food and the steaks are melt in the mouth and always cooked perfectly. Looking forward to another one next Saturday. The hotel does have a special " stay and dine " offer on at different times of the week where if you book a stay you get a £30 per person voucher to use in the restaurant but sadly not on a Saturday during the busy season so we miss out on that as Saturday is the only night we can go. Can't fault anything about the Hardwick and as long as it stays that way we'll keep going back.

« Lovely place to stay »

Stayed over at this hotel for a week as was on business trip. The hotel is right next to the park and it was beautiful. Glad that I had the chance to take a walk in the park after dinner one of the nights. Luckily the weather was great while I was there. The room is huge and very comfortable. If I'm on holiday in this area, I would consider staying here again.

    « Good stay »

Stayed here 25th July for one night on business. Room was a reasonable size with all amenities that would be expected for a hotel of this size and grade. Did not use the restaurant but the bar meal was very good and the lady manning the bar that evening was friendly and very efficient. Breakfast in the morning was certainly a plus with cooked breakfast all being done to order. Would recommend and stay again

    2
    « Afternoon Tea »

This was an outing for twenty to twentyfive people. The tea was not hot. The scones ( fruit and plain ) were not cooked inside. The cream ( which was supposed to be clotted ) and jam allocation left a great deal to be believed. I know that a man managed with loaves and fishes to feed many, however even he would be pushed to spread it between four scones. Nobody liked the battenburg cake so that was taken home a by a lady as bird food. One thing in favour was the staff very polite and plenty of them.

    « Collecting rooms »

So I'm back at Hardwick Hall again. It seems I am collecting bedrooms because I always have a different one every time. The rooms in the main house are all unique whereas the wing has all similar rooms although all rooms are a decent size. This time I was in 104, a room in the old house overlooking a roof area. What it lacked in views it made up for with furnishings. One of the nicest rooms I've stayed in here as it happens. Good night's sleep. Check in and out was efficient. Once again, the grapefruit juice at breakfast tasted off. It always seems to!

« Best night's sleep in a lifetime of hotel stays. »

From the sweeping drive up to the Hotel to the beautiful view of the lake and parkland, Harwick Hall creates a super country house experience! Our bedroom was just gorgeous with a 7' bed and lovely elegant furniture, mirrors and lamps. The bathroom was a "wow" experience, just fabulous! We asked for a quiet room on the top floor and that was exactly what we got and with a view of the beautiful garden. Best night's sleep ever followed by an excellent breakfast cooked to order. On leaving we noticed a huge marquee and separate parking so I suppose that our Sunday night stay was to our advantage as we were looking for some peace and quiet. Very friendly staff at reception as well as at the bar and dining room, great atmosphere! We'll be back!

« Lovely room and good nights sleep July 16 »

Stayed here as a large family, all having different rooms, overall the rooms were clean and most of us all had a good nights sleep, however depending on the room one was noisy and rather warm as they were near the function room but on a good note the rest were cool and all had good taste of finish. The hotel other than that was faultless as the grounds are so lovely. The rib room is very pricey ! The meal is very nice but due to having to send steaks back as they were over cooked was very disappointing, overall a nice place to socialise but wouldn't eat there again due to the expensive prices and more importantly because of the patronising, sarcastic, irritating man who attempted to be a waiter! However the rest of the staff were lovely as they were polite.

    « Super Canny Hotel »

We stayed here for 1 night as we were at a wedding, we arrived before the check in time, as we had advised this when we booked, our room had not been made ready but that did not delay us as we were given another deluxe room that was ready and this started our visit on the right note that we were to find flowed through the whole hotel. Our room was excellent with a view over the folly and was spotless, the bed would of slept 6, the carpets were so plush, the bathroom was out of this world with bath, 2 sinks and a walk in shower and your tea and coffee fully stocked. The organisation of the wedding was faultless and any reasonable request was catered for. Anybody that books here will see their reward when they have the breakfast, we had the full English and unlike other hotels we have stayed at, this was cooked to order and many other cereals were available on the buffet. Check out was at 11:00am and was swiftly dealt with by reception but you never felt pushed to leave. Overall the Hardwick Hall hotel and staff impressed us immensely and the grounds, although we did not partake in the walking of them, were amazingly well kept and the views were to die for.

    « Dependable »

We have been regular visitors to The Hardwick Hall Hotel for a few years now, we usually stay in one of the premier bedrooms however they were all booked this particular weekend so we were in a standard room, no problem every thing was of the same standard as a premier room just smaller. We ate in the Rib Room restaurant excellent food as usual great staff throughout this establishment, great setting as usual we had a walk around the country park no need for big coats as the weather was good to us.

    « Scrumptious afternoon tea. »

This was a treat for us four oldies bought by our respective children and what a treat it was. We were waited on and our every whim catered for by the lovely Madison. We were "gob smacked" by the array of sandwiches ,hot delicacies ,scones and lovely pastries. It was a feast for the eyes as well as the stomach. I would have no hesitation in recommending this treat to celebrate any occasion and have already started dropping more hints for my birthday.Thank you Madison and Neil also for giving us such a lovely afternoon treat.

« Comfortable atay in the lovely setting of Hardwick Park »

We stayed here as a couple over our wedding anniversary weekend, we were actually attending a friends ball the same weekend at the hotel so decided to treat ourselves to a stay also, room only! Lovely hotel, in the lush setting of Hardwick Park. If it had been a different time of year and slightly warmer, we would have sat outside at the lovely tables overlooking the water. Room was decorated nicely with plenty of storage and a great bathroom. Bed was comfortable also. Would definitely stay again.

« Gluten free afternoon tea »

I had a gluten free afternoon tea at Hardwick Hall & was most disappointed, I was given a bread bun for a sandwich,2 wraps filled with coronation chicken & cucumber & tomato, the scones were very dry & crumbly I was given a "MrsCrimbles" macaroon, a bought jam tart & a rhubarb "flapjack all in all it was very disappointing & definitely not worth the money (£18-95) there are many place in the area who provide good Gluten free fare unfortunately Hardwick Hall is not one of them

    « Disappointed! »

Stayed here last night....a last minute booking. We paid £129 for bed and breakfast and then we were put in a room above a wedding party. Out of courtesy and customer service the least we would have expected would to have been told about the event when we arrived so we could have found other accommodation. By the time we returned to our room at 10ish and realised that this wasn't going to be the haven we'd expected it was too late to find another hotel. The room was very hot but the noise levels were even worse when we opened a window. We asked to be moved but they were fully booked. On a more positive note the grounds are lovely, the waitresses in The Rib were welcoming and friendly and the food good.

« Lovely grounds and a big room! »

Stayed overnight on business. Huge room with an amazing view over the lake, claw foot bath and walk-in shower. Evening meal very pleasant- dressed crab, fish, chips and mushy peas. Good facilities and I would return for pleasure and explore County Durham.

    « A hidden gem »

Outstanding value, beautiful period rooms and excellent food. Wow, I was really taken back by this venue as I had expected a typical plastic business hotel, however I got the complete opposite, a lovely country house with all the trimmings. I was on a business trip but would love to return with my wife as this is a real country house type hotel with lovely grounds, fine art and antique furniture. The room I had was stunning with a four posted bed, double sinks, and the best shower I have ever had.

    « Gluten freAfternoon Tea »

Very disappointed with the gluten free afternoon tea at Hardwick hall hotel. I was given a bread bun cut in half for sandwiches the scones were very dry & crumbly, there were no cakes to speak of I was given a "Mrs Crimbles" coconut macaroon a jam tart & rhubarb & coconut flapjack all this £18-95 does not in my opinion offer good value. There are many places that serve really good Gluten free afternoon teas unfortunately this is not one of them

    « Birthday »

Visited for a birthday celebration in a private room, approx 40 guests. The hotel & grounds are nice. Service was pretty slow in the bar however we were made to feel welcome. Pre ordered meals weeks before attending but the food service was poor... Slow, food was cold, others on table were finished eating before others were served, vegetables brought out long after main meal. Food however was tasty but would have been more enjoyable hotter. Overall an average experience, may return if in the area

« A little luxury in lovely grounds. »

We initially got a Groupon voucher to visit for afternoon tea. The journey was pleasant through lovely countryside and the drive up the Hotel was impressive. The staff were friendly and helpful and we were surprised how many people were having afternoon tea. There were couples, families, older folk and two large parties which were all served in good time by friendly efficient staff and with a smile which always makes the different. We had a sumptuous afternoon tea, full of all the things you would expect all made on the premises and tasting delicious. The table were large and comfortable, the china a flat wear adequate and very clean as were the table cloths and we thoroughly enjoyed a little luxury in the afternoon. We were so impressed with the tea on that day that we arranged to visit again for an evening meal and again were not disappointed. The service was equally as pleasant and the food was very good indeed. It is obvious that the kitchen staff enjoy their role and make super home made dishes with flair and the service staff follow that through. This is a nice place to eat, I suspect a nice place to stay and our two Border Terriers enjoyed their walk around the grounds. We recommend this little spot of heaven and will certainly visit again.

    « Birthday Party......Bit of a let down! »

We were coming to this hotel for a private birthday party and were very much looking forward to it, so decided to make a night of it and stay over. The hotel is situated on beautiful grounds and on our arrival we found we had been booked into a deluxe room on the ground floor with a fantastic view from the window. The room itself had a lovely, large bathroom with a huge bath, roomy shower and lots of fluffy towels. The bedroom however (although very clean) was a bit shabby and needed some TLC. The furniture was chipped and scratched and it all looks like it needs a revamp. On a whole though, we were initially pleased with the room! The bed was very comfortable and we had a great night's sleep. I was very much looking forward to my morning shower in what looked to be fantastic facilities. However......... When I did have a shower, i found that the plugs were completely blocked and as such the water did not drain from the bottom of the shower. This resulted in the entire bathroom flooding, soaking personal items that I had placed on the floor! We were not happy about this and complained at reception. A manager came out to speak to us, but although he was polite, he did nothing in the way of compensating us. The food in the hotel was not great. The meal which was served to us at the party looked great when it came out and the portions were generous, but it was, at best, bland. My husband couldn't work out what flavour his soup was supposed to be and it was clear that the sticky toffee pudding had been sat under a heat lamp for a long period of time as it was extremely tough and chewy on the outside and flavourless in the middle. I left most of this. Breakfast was also disappointing. We ordered a full English. The food came out very quickly (suggesting that its not made to order...), and let's just say that the presentation wasn't great! Most disappointingly, the chef had forgotten to give us our hash browns. I had one bite of the 'sausage' (which I would actually describe more as a really cheap offal tube) and decided that it wasn't edible, the fried eggs were completely hard and overcooked and the bacon was fatty and not crisp. In all, the hotel is comfortable and clean and the staff are friendly enough, but the food is far from good and there were lots of little niggles that I feel does not make this hotel value for money. I doubt that I would stay here again and certainly wouldn't return for the food.

    « Afternoon tea »

Today we visited Hardwick Hall for afternoon tea to celebrate my daughters graduation. The room was lovely but very quiet as we were the only guests in there. The waitress was very attentive and changing sandwich filling was not an issue. The food and drinks arrived promptly. The food was very average. Very normal sliced loaf bread. Very average scones and cakes. Nice but not exciting. The worse thing was the lack of atmosphere. We were the only ones dining but there was no background music which made it a little dull. It was a special day so nothing was going to spoil that but I certainly wouldn't return. Expensive for the experience we got.

    « Tyneside / Teesside Business Trip »

Nicely presented and located hotel, close to the A1M and within a short driving distance of major industrial areas in the north-east. Adjoining park is ideal on days when the weather is good and attractive cities, such as Durham, are only a short drive away. Good eating options are available at the hotel or the town of Sedgefield is just a 5 minute drive away. The Indian restaurant there is an excellent option for informal eating.

    « Wedding - Stunning Grounds - Huge Bath & Shower »

My friend had her wedding here in March 2013 - It wouldn't let me select this far back. The grounds alone are absolutely breathtaking! The rooms are spacious and decorated beautifully. It is the biggest bath I've ever had! ! The 2 of us could fully lay down and the bath water comes right up to your neck. The shower was also the biggest I've ever seen and such a beautiful powerful shower. The wedding was amazing! Every room was was gorgeous and the staff could not do enough for you! Whether you're considering this venue for your wedding or just a visit I couldn't recommend enough!

    « Peace in comfort »

This is the second time we have stayed at Hardwick Hall Hotel. This time it was handy for a wedding on Teeside ,about 10 miles away. The hotel provided a very comfortable and relaxing atmosphere to revive between ceremony and evening reception. The rural setting added charm. The staff were very welcoming and friendly , the room was good for an overnight stay and the bar meal was lovely, well cooked and presented and good value. The hotel is popular wedding venue and we were a bit concerned that our sleep might be disturbed but it was only the refrigerated delivery lorry the next morning that disturbed us. Breakfast was good .plenty of choice and well cooked. We needed an early start so the restaurant was not busy but as we were leaving several groups from the weddings filled the room quite quickly. Easy efficient checkout and felt relaxed for the journey to the next leg of our weekend celebrations ( a 40th birthday followed by Granddaughters 4th)

    « Excellent wedding venue »

We attended a friend's wedding reception and also stayed over. The reception was lovely, great food, good service, nothing to fault. The disco at night was rather loud, if you were sitting close by, we went to bed with ringing ears! Our room was a superior and was very nice, in particular the bathroom. The window could do with a net curtain or something as there was a lack of privacy on the ground floor and it's too dark with curtains closed. The main downside for us was breakfast, it was extremely quick service but mass catering and we didn't feel that the food or coffee were the same standard as the wedding food, the day before. We would return.

« A lot of potential to be a great hotel! »

Attended a wedding at the hotel in may and I was very impressed with the building, grounds, and the room! I have to say it's a very pretty place to be and the room was very well maintained and clean. All the staff were attentive and polite amd very helpful. The only let down was the food unfortunately! If they get the food right it would have been 5 stars!

    « Disappointed »

We stayed there for 1 night and were quite disappointed. The room was clean with a lake view. Nice walk around the lake and grounds. Downside Menu doesn't have a lot of choice and seems a bit pricey. Breakfast would have been better if it had been buffet style breakfast Rooms could do with sound proofing after being woken at 2am & 4am ( use imagination )

« Beautiful location Rooms starting to show their age »

The hotel was chosen for its location close to where I had to be over the weekend. Set in an idyllic rural setting, the first impression is one of opulence, however once inside whilst excellent effort has been made to keep up appearances, looking close you can see that it has been a few years since this hotel underwent any form of refurbishment, a sentiment echoed in the quirky but likeable rooms. As a business traveller, with lots of electronic devices power outlets are a must, and the room allocated to me whilst having two outlets close to the desk, both were being used by appliances. Much in agreement with an earlier review the cleanliness of the room was not perfect, not dirty just could do with more attention to detail. The double bed was super soft, so if you like a hard bed, perhaps you may wish to look else where. A plus, the room had a refrigerator.

absolutely fantastic - hotel was beautiful hostess was brilliant nothing was a bother. The food was delicious it was all served on beautiful Ted Baker crockery I had coffee which was in a coffee pot we were offered water if we wanted it, more tea or coffee. The pork and apple wellingtons were a real treat - we weren't rushed it was a lovely experience will definitely return.

    « Fantastic Wedding »

From the moment we first saw Hardwick we knew we loved it and wanted to get married here - I'm so pleased we did. The staff were fantastic and kept us calm the day went perfectly- everyone commenting on the beautiful venue and how lovely the food was. I stayed two nights and both rooms were great with plenty of room. All the other guests also commented how impressed they were with the rooms. Thank you Hardwick for making our day a truly special one that no one will ever forget.

« sUNDAY LUNCH FOR ALL THE FAMILY..(10) »

visited with our family of 10 for my wife,s birthday to have sunday lunch. We had booked the table in advance and on arrival we were greeted by pleasant lady and shown to our lovely laid out round table.Drinks were ordered and we all selected our choice of food from a good range on offer.Service was good and quick and we all enjoyed our 3 course meals. The quality of food was excellent and service second to none!!......the only downside (call it nit-picking)was the "canny old fella" playing the piano as we ate which spoiled the conversation properly due to the acoustics of the dining room as the piano "pinged out"...but a beautiful room with lovely painted ceilings. The outside of the hotel is in a lovely setting as we walked round the lake as it was a lovely sunny day.We will be back!!

    « Amazing but..... »

The double bed was a major let down me and my partner got no sleep what so ever. The meal we had in the rib room restaurant on the other hand was faultless. I went for the chicken but because I don't like blue cheese sauce the chef made me a special dish with the chicken instead. It literally was to die for. Apart from the bed this was a lovely nite away

    « Lovely hotel »

Just returned from a 2 night stay in this lovely hotel set in stunning grounds. We had a spacious room overlooking the lake. It was very peaceful. Breakfast was good and we also ate in the Rib Room restaurant which was very nice.

From the moment my son pick Hardwick hall for their venue the staff were very helpful showing us all around the different rooms, explaining how we could have them arranged ,On the day of the wedding everything was beautifully laid out, food was top notch Adults and children alike enjoyed everything

    « Disappointed »

Very nice hotel and superb restaurant and staff, massively let down by the size of the 'double' bed. The one thing you book a hotel for is a good nights sleep! Unfortunately due to the size of the supposedly double bed this didn't happen. I'm only 5 foot 8 and stuck out of the bottom of the bed! And there was certainly no room to turn over width ways either! We both spent the entire night thinking we were going to fall out of the bed if we moved ever so slightly. We're not obese people by any stretch of the imagination but to say there was no room in the bed is an understatement. This and the fact the TV worked intermittently took the shine off what could have been a very nice night away.

    « Beautiful Location »

Parkland and area fantastic, hotel layout very good, food pleasing, room extremely quirky in a good way with beautiful view, fittings and bathroom needing attention, a little more attention to cleaning required.

    4
    « Glorious Grounds »

During a short business trip, myself and my colleague had a two night stay here. Situated in the most pretty of settings, with extremely well-tended lawns and even the little walk though wood, seemed o appear to be immaculate. The rooms are lovely, with original sash windows. Breakfast was very nice too, with plenty of choices. We ate in The Rib-Room restaurant which is on the lower floor of the building; both the food and the service there were flawless. My only negative observation would be that the reception staff could smile a little more at their guests both upon their arrival and their departure. Everyone looks much prettier when they smile you know!

Stunning location and beautiful hotel. Visited here for Sunday Lunch - food was superb, the staff are attentive and welcoming and we loved the gentleman playing piano! So impressed we have booked for New Year's Eve.

    « Nice overnight stay »

Set in delightful grounds with beautiful lake. Nice hotel, our room was a good size with really well equipped bathroom, view towards the lake. Some areas a little tired, particularly the breakfast room. Staff friendly. Breakfast a little uninspiring, hot breakfasts were served so fast after ordering, there wasn't time to enjoy fruit or cereal before. Didn't replenish buffet towards the end of breakfast service which was disappointing. Venue for weddings, serve afternoon tea.

« Great for that big event »

Attended charity ball and I must say that the food service was second to none, I have attended many large scale functions and often the food is lacking but the food arrived efficiently and pipping hot and was of excellent quality. Room and decor excellent for your special event. Only gripe was £23 for a bottle "cheap" brand proseco which was disappointing unchilled, served with a smile but should be ready. Staff great, lovely setting as always, massive car park (really massive!!) great views over the lake and adjacent park.

    « Great »

Reception staff fantastic! Greeted on arrival - room should have been a twin however when we arrived it was a double a quick call to reception and they popped up when we where out and changed the room to a twin! Fantastic location very quaint! Good breakfast and great rooms!

    « An excellent destination »

The approach to Hardwick Hall sets the scene for a fabulous setting. You drive through the trees and open out onto views across the lake as you park up outside the hotel. I've been for business meetings and lunches and found the setting, food and service to be excellent.

« Excellent hotel and customer care »

Lovely hotel set in beautiful grounds. Premium room spacious and comfortable. Fantastic bathroom with a shower which included massage jets. Great breakfast and served by a very efficient staff - Rachael was very good. Zoe Hill and her husband (sorry did not get his name) sorted out a problem in a most professional way demonstrating great customer care. Highly recommend. Peter Knight and Robin Tatham

    « Lovely Hotel »

Stayed here a few times now and its such a nice warm friendly hotel with lovely views over looking the park. The rooms are very clean and the beds are huge. Bathrooms are modern and clean. The food is gorgeous and not too expensive. Plenty of parking close to the hotel. Staff are very pleasant and always happy to help. Would definitely recommend A*

    « Sunday lunch »

Unable to complain at the time due to the fact that our sons paid for the meal which was Roast Pork-----the Yorkshire puddings could be used for making shoes, the mash potato was cold, the pork was tasteless as was the veg, the carrots were under cooked, the parsnip and roasts were cooked but taste less --------on top of this the prawn cocktail starter was rubbish--------

« TOP CLASS IN A BEAUTIFUL LOCATION »

Full of wow factors. Had the pleasure of being the after dinner speaker here and staying over. Superb premier room - quiet gardens outside, free fast wifi, bang & olufsen players, luxury bathroom with deep traditional bath. Function meal for a huge dinner was beautifully done and of restaurant standard. Lovely full English breakfast in a pretty room with really pleasant and caring service. Set in parkland with gorgeous lake views - hotly recommended.

    « Birthday Party »

I booked a Function Room for a Birthday party for 16 people. All my long planning went well and I couldn't fault a thing. The room was absolute beautiful with an immaculate table. The 3 course meals were mouthwatering delicious and we had even luck with the weather since the sun decided to make an appearance. The staff assigned to us have been helpful & very friendly. I was so happy that everything went so well and I could give my Partner a deserving event which will be fondly remembered.

    « Pleasantly surprised »

I attended an event here recently which, to be honest, I was not looking forward to as the whole catering 'en masse' and cheesy party/discos are not my thing, however I was pleasantly surprised. The event was very professionally organised, the music was not cheesy in the slightest, and the food - well, it was the first time ever that I have eaten an entire set three course vegetarian meal without picking at it or leaving it completely. I hope the normal hotel restaurant meals and events meet the standards that I experienced on this occasion.

    « A Relaxing Weekend »

Booked a last minute three night stay over the Bank Holiday weekend. The room we had was lovely and spacious with a pleasant view across the lake and gardens. The hotel is well placed, and easy access from the A1, but the location is peaceful and traffic noise is not a problem. It is easy to reach the heritage coast from this hotel and other towns and cities in the area, as well as some lovely countryside, so there should be something for everyone within easy reach. Alternatively you can just stroll in the parkland or join the other joggers on a circuit round the lake. Just watch out at breakfast time that they don't take your hot food order too soon or you have to surrender the cornflakes for the bacon and eggs. Breakfast was the least relaxing aspect of the weekend as the apparent rush to 'get you fed' gives the impression that they want you to hurry up and get out of the way. I suspect it may be more to do with trying to give prompt service but the service format needs reviewing.

    « Lovely stay »

I stayed at this hotel for one night for business, so I didn't spend much time there. I stayed in a deluxe room, the view from the window of the gardens was lovely. I didn't hear any noise and I had a great night's sleep in a huge comfortable bed. The staff at the front desk were friendly. The bathroom was HUGE and so clean, the shower was lovely, if I'd stayed longer I would have loved to try out the huge tub. The breakfast was great, cooked to order and a variety, the fresh fruit was a highlight. I would stay here again and would recommend it to others.

    « wedding night stay »

My son held his wedding and reception here 03/05/16, and it was a wonderful day from start to finish. Around 20 guests stayed the night, I upgraded my room as a Reward Member. The room was very clean, an early update to the decor would be worthwhile. The breakfast the following morning was a bit of a let down. The quality of the full english breakfast wasn't the best I have had. The sausages were very plasticky, half a mushroom is a bit stingy. The bacon was very fatty. When we left the breakfast room , the waitress was cleaning up and the toast crumbs were being brushed to the back of the table where there was a curtain!!. Not a pleasurable experience to finish off my sons wedding the day before.

« Extending a day at the races. »

    « afternoon tea »

Afternoon tea for approximately 25 guests. I am sorry to say that this was not value for money. At almost £18 pp I would have expected something a bit more special.Scones were stale, cream was sour and the sandwich selection not very appealing. In the recent past I have had much nicer elsewhere and more reasonably priced. However the hotel is lovely and in a beautiful setting, although we were in a private room which lacked any atmosphere whatsoever. Needless to say I will not be recommending afternoon tea here.

    « Family Lunch »

Went on a Saturday for lunch for 7 adults. Impressive building and setting and lovely grounds. Had a couple of drinks before lunch and service was very good, friendly and professional. Very good menu ranging from snacks and sandwiches to full 3 course meals plus a specials board. I had the pate to start which was very good but could have done with a bit more toast. Other started included French Onion Soup, Dressed Crab, Bruschetta and Cheddar Souffle. For main course, I had the Hardwick 10oz burger which was excellent. Others in the party had Peppered Fillet Steak, Sirloin Steak, Fish and Chips, Asparagus Tagliatelle and Risotto. All the food received a lot of praise. Only issue was the Tagliatelle was requested without garlic and it arrived not only with garlic in it but accompanied by Garlic Bread so this had to be replaced. Very good service, nice surroundings and good atmosphere and would return. Did not stay overnight so cannot comment on bedrooms but would definitely consider a weekend break here.

    « Wonderful Setting »

Having stayed at Hardwick Hall a few years ago. I was pleasantly surprised at how much the hotel has improved. I was allocated room 207 which had recently been refurbished, the room had the biggest and most comfortable bed of any hotel I have stayed in. The bathroom is large with a bath and shower. The view over the gardens, lake and Hardwick park is a wonderful view. The staff where all very helpful and efficient, at breakfast there was a good choice and the full English excellent. Without doubt the best, Best Western I have stayed in.

« Afternoon tea at Hardwick Hall Hotel Sedgefield »

Afternoon tea for 25 guests. I am sorry to say that I thought this was not very good value for money.I have had much better more reasonably priced elsewhere. Sadly the scones were stale, the cream was off and the sandwich selection quite poor.I would have been very disappointed and embarrassed if I had organised this family gathering. However, the hotel and grounds are lovely but I could never ever recommend afternoon tea.

    « Afternoon tea »

Not quite "what it says on the tin". I was extremely disappointed with the afternoon tea experience recently. A three-tier tray is intended to serve two people, however I did not consider the contents to be anywhere near worthy of the £17.95 pp price tag. The pictures on the website are quite misleading as the crockery is basic white with no sign of the Ted Baker range as described. The tea was initially served in teapots, but without any offer of different flavours. Once, requested, although the staff seemed somewhat surprised that people may like Earl Grey/green tea, we were provided with tea bags and water - no sign of the tea trolley described. The food wasn't dreadful, but a little stale and unfortunately the clotted cream had actually turned completely sour and smelt more like cheese. Apologies were given and all of the tubs of off cream were replaced. The only saving grace was the carvery my daughter chose instead, which was a very generous portion and much better value at £9.95 pp. A long way to go, a lot of money spent (16 people) and most definitely not to be recommended. I will be voting with my feet!

    « Christmas gift »

Me and my husband visited this hotel last week. We had a cream tea gift from freinds at Christmas. From booking to leaving I could not fault this hotel. I do not like mayonnaise and requested none in my sandwiches which was no trouble at short notice for the staff. The sandwiches and gorgeous scones and cakes were delicious!. Thanks to everyone. We will return soon ??

« Country Manor Hotel 1 night stay »

Good location close to A1(M), set in rural countryside with lake and walks in the grounds. Had evening set meal as part of a larger group and food was reasonable for hotel standard. On arrival staff were all friendly. I got lucky and got a suite which was clean, some of my colleagues rooms however were a little tired but clean and also well appointed. I would recommend a stay and I will come again and bring my wife next time.

« afternoon tea... fabulous waitress (rachael) »

Went here with my mum for a mothers day treat. The afternoon tea was delicious! Lots of variety and plenty of things to choose from including a hot choice which was a pork and apple roll which was a lovely addition. We weren't rushed at all which meant we got to spend a lovely two hours chatting and drinking endless cups of tea. I will say though when we first arrived the first girl who served us didn't give us the options of choosing our flavour tea. But there was another girl (a young blonde girl called Rachael) who was an absolute delight. She couldn't do enough for us. She made sure we had a full pot of tea at all times and recommended different flavours for us to try and had a lovely chat with us at different intervals. She definitely added value to the experience x i hope hardwick hall read this and pass on our thanks to rachael :)

« Recent stay at Hardwick Hall »

This is a lovely hotel, the service is 5* particularly the head waiter (restaurant manager)! They couldn't have done enough for me! The chef who was Philllipino bent over backwards to accommodate my low chloresterol preference! I.e. Nothing cooked in butter just plain. Up tasty food and it was delicious! Well done excellent thoroughly recommended

    « Surprise 60th party »

Just had a perfect function and stay at this hotel at the weekend, the hotel staff were absolutely top class when it came to helping organise a surprise party for my mum, the room was lovely and clean and absolutely no problems when checking in. Setting up the room for the party was well organised and the staff could not do enough to help, the food was fantastic everyone at the party commented on how good it was, the disco that the hotel organised was well set up and the DJ had a great selection of music and was spot on ready when the birthday girl arrived. The bar staff were also really helpful and friendly. The breakfast next morning was delicious, plenty of choice and cooked perfect. All in all I am so pleased that we chose to have the party at Hardwick and would highly recommend this hotel and hope to stay again soon.

    « Quality! »

Business trip - stayed just one night. Beautiful building and grounds. Excellent dinner. Interesting room with good facilities. Would most definitely stay again, business or pleasure. Room had everything I needed - tea/coffee, safe, WiFi, TV. And stuff I didn't need - bottled water, fruit, mints, iron, hairdryer. Only thing missing was a free mini bar, but that would be asking too much! I really enjoyed dinner - a great steak menu, and the quality was superb. Really superb. I've stayed in many hotels across the globe on business, and this is one of the few that I would genuinely look forward to going back to for leisure. And probably the only hotel that I would willingly pay MORE to stay in, than the standard rates. Next time I'm in the North East, I will be staying here again.

    2
    « Bad Weekend »

If you are looking for a nice quiet hotel for the weekend this is not the one, Noise was very bad especially late at night and as the corridor had a tile flooring the noise was amplified especially with these high heel shoes. Staff do not care, food is served cold and took for ages to be served, There was also rotten food in the room on arrival.

    « Very Enjoyable »

Excellent hotel ..superb facilities. ...very attentive staff ...The rib room was excellent and the food fantastic. ....The room was brilliant with a wonderful large bed ......my only gripe .....The water in the shower had a mind of its own and kept going hot and cold and stopped altogether for a time! Did it spoil our visit. ..no ! Will be back ...yes ! Great value for money. ..loved it ...Thank you !

    « Little gem of a hotel »

This hotel was recommended to me by some of my work colleagues as it's not too far from one of our facilities in the area, I'm really glad they did ?? Hardwick Hall is in a lovely country setting with fabulous grounds, very friendly & helpful staff, good bar food (& a great steak restaurant if you're interested), good WiFi coverage and a comfortable room. It has everything you need for a decent night away from home. Highly recommended from this business traveller.

« Silver Wedding Anniversary Treat »

As we live not too far our children booked us a night at Hardwick to celebrate our wedding anniversary. They had booked us in as stay and dine but also added entry to the Disco of the Decades, that was on that night. Must say the girl who checked us in gave no details of what our actual stay was, she just asked for payment to which we replied it's already paid for by our children. Oh thats correct and gave us the room card. No info was given about what time the Disco started or what time breakfast was. On a plus note the premium room was fantastic. We enjoyed the disco night apart from when we eventually got to the buffet there was hardly anything left. Management may want to look at how they ask people to go for food. Breakfast the next morning was plentiful. However upon checkout we were told that we had £20 to pay for breakfast. We thought this was included in our package upon looking at the reciept we also discovered that we each had £30 to use off a meal in the Rib Room. Had we been told this information upon arrival we could have booked into the Rib Room and sampled a couple of steaks instead of eating the leftovers of the empty buffet station. That would of left us with better memories of celebrating our silver wedding anniversary at Hardwick. I think we could of at least been informed on arrival that breakfast wasn't included and that we had money to spend in the RibRoom. The staff waiting on on the evening and at breakfast were excellent. Maybe next time or when we are passing we will get to sample the Rib Room.

« AVOID Afternoon Tea Here at All Costs!!!! »

So when me and a friend needed a good catch up, I thought that I could have counted on Hardwick Hall Hotel to provide a decent afternoon tea - although this was not the case. Firstly, when we arrived there were no staff to greet us or direct us to where we needed to go. So we were wandering around the building for about 10 minutes - we could have been anyone. These days, I feel its important for a larger building to have top security as anything can happen!! Secondly, we finally were "pointed" in the right direction by a particularly rude member of staff. We were seated by one particular member of staff, who at first was very enthusiastic but in time this bordered on sarcastic and annoying... So after a 45 minute wait, we finally received our afternoon tea to which we found we had 1small wrap and 2 small sandwiches, all with grizzly meat fillings. We then had 2 small scones and a small jar of jam and cream fillings for the scones, with another 2 small cakes each. My friend and I both had a bite out of every sandwich and cake and left a lot of food, to which would have been noted by the 3 waitresses who just stood and talked. I'm sure we were offered a selection of alternative teas about 5 times. We were finished and were sat around for about 15 minutes and started to exit the building when we realised we had not paid. No staff were there to assist us in where to go, so again we were wandering around the building. When we finally were shown the area to pay, we summarised our time to the member of staff who didn't apologise but instead said "we are usually told our portion sizes are too big"!! In summary, we felt let down with the food that was served to us, the staff's helpfulness and cleanliness of their uniforms, and the value for money. I was looking into attending the lobster festival/ball later in the year but this issue with the venue has given me no confidence in returning.

    « A superb celebration . . . »

It's almost two years since we moved to the North East and, with the benefit of hindsight, I'm most surprised that we have never before booked Sunday lunch at the Hardwick Hall Hotel on the outskirts of Sedgefield ? though we have had dinner there on one occasion. At the weekend, we arranged a family birthday celebration at Hardwick and are now kicking ourselves for having for so long ignored several recommendations to eat there. I'm not one of those pretentious critics who feels it necessary to resort to purple prose to review a dining-out experience. In this instance, it's sufficient to say that the meal was most enjoyable (most of our party opted for the traditional beef and Yorkshire pudding main), the staff were attentive without being disruptive, and the ambience in and around the dining room and reception lounge added to a truly relaxing lunchtime get-together. We particularly liked the absence of any feeling that we needed to eat and move on as quickly as possible. Just two niggles: the prawn cocktail starter came with tiny prawns already coated with Marie Rose and no option to have the sauce as an independent item and, I'm advised, the strawberry tart sweet was deemed by one of our ladies to be ?rather dry'. Both of these can of course be easily remedied. The real test of any eating establishment is whether or not we would return. The answer in this instance is a clear ?definitely'. We have now included Hardwick Hall in our list of ?best venues' in this part of the world.

From dealing with Nicola (amazing) to the actual evening I cannot praise them enough. The room was amazing and the food exceptional,Neil was great and looked after everything, it was slick, professional and most of all friendly, with impeccable service. If you are hosting an event then look no firther. « Great spot »

I came a long way for a quick business trip. Staff was very friendly. The room was large and the bathroom was awesome. I wish I had time to have a bath in the large tub! I'm not a foody but the food was excellent. I took a break from business to take a walk around the park adjacent to the hotel. I'd like to return a better time of year with more time.

    « First Class! »

Nothing but praise for the setting, accomodation staff and restaurant! The rooms are some of the best I have seen and the freshly prepared breakfast is great. If steak or fish are your preferred dinner choices the restaurant excels. Other choices on the menu are just as good, plus the home made desserts!

    « Keep coming back »

Stayed one night on a dine and stay. You got £30 each off your evening meal. Breakfast was included in the price of the room. The room we had was huge the bed was very comfortable. In the bathroom it had a extra large and deep bath as well as a multi jet shower. The restaurant is mainly a steak restaurant but saying that they also have fish and other meats. We didn't have a desert as we were to full. Breakfast was very good. Outside there is a lovely walk around a lake with lots of follys and a coffee shop. The staff at Hardwick Hall are very friendly. The Hotel is very popular and you can see why.

    « Gorgeous room »

Visited Hardwick Hall in December for a family wedding and it massively exceeded what we were expecting. It looked lovely from the outside and it matches on the inside. The wedding took place in a huge room with gorgeous chandeliers however the carpet was quite outdated! The canapés were lovely, as was the food. However when I was given my starter I was pretty sure it wasn't the pate I had ordered but after asking the waiter 3 times he told me it was pate, so once I'd started to eat he came over to in fact tell me that it wasn't pate (good job i didn't have an allergy!!) he then took away the others that hadn't started eating on the table yet didn't want to take mine until i actually had to ask him(?) Other than that the food was gorgeous. We were each given a glass of wine to have with dinner and when pouring mine the bottle ran out, he then returned with a totally different bottle, and colour. Not professional!! The DJ space for the night time was fantastic! But being charged nearly 9£ for a vodka and mixer is a bit of a joke! This besides the room was absolutely beautiful, one of the best rooms I've ever stayed in. Free standing bath, two sinks, huge mirror, decor, everything about it amazing. I would stay here again but would consider recommending this to people for functions.

    « Love love love! »

Had our wedding here in 2014 and customer service was amazing. We have been to five star venues where the service and price were horrendous. Staff are always nice and always willing to help. Since we have been for meals, cream tea and drinks and they are always top notch! Our room was gorgeous! Some of the rooms needs a refurb but I'm sure that will happen in time!

    « Fabulous Place »

Stayed here recently whilst on business, I had not really check the place out,as i drove down the drive and saw the hotel my first thought was WoW. It is situated in stunning grounds with a beautiful lake. The receptionist was friendly and check in was really quick. I stayed ion the ground floor rooms with my room over looking the grounds, again stunning. My room was large with a really comfortable bed and tea and coffee making facilities. The bathroom was massive,a bath and a separate shower and toilet. Breakfast was great waitress service and plenty of choice. The staff which i must mention could not have made me feel more welcome.

We visited for my partners birthday, our room was lovely with a bath big enough for two lots of complimentary products and a great shower. We chose room service rather than to go to the restaurant and it was delicious, the views were great if it wasn't so cold we might of walked around the pretty grounds. the staff were lovely we will definitely go again

Would definitely come back

    « Fantastic Venue »

I have been several times to Hardwick Hall for balls, themed events and all are fabulous. The themed party nights are fantastic value for money with good food and a great DJ inbetween the band playing. The food is fantastic. The venue is easy to find and has ample parking and the rooms are clean and the staff are friendly too.

    « Average »

Considering the room rate "average" is the only way to describe this hotel, rooms are pretty tired. The restaurant downstairs is a redeeming feature albeit rather expensive. All in all its not bad but I would except it to either be cheaper or be of s higher quality.

    « Afternoon tea-surprise baby shower »

I threw a surprise baby shower for one of my friends & we had afternoon tea... What can I say amazing, the staff were fantastic from the events team arranging it to the staff on the day keeping it a surprise until the last minute the mum to be had no idea even when she asked for the private room at reception. The food was fantastic the new Afternoon tea menu had been released on the Monday & was lovely everyone enjoyed it, the scones were so light & fresh the sandwiches very tasty, the passion fruit eggs went down a treat as did the pistachio macaroons. Would definitely recommend considering the price & the fact that the room hire was free

« Disappointing Afternoon tea, if Vegetarian or Vegan don't go to this hotel!! »

Booked a table for afternoon tea well in advance to celebrate a birthday. Day ruined, atrocious service, waited over hour for food, received one cup of tea but milk took another 15 minutes to arrive. Vegetarian food mixed with meat and fish. If Vegan don't even think of this hotel unless you want a plate of lettuce leaves.

« surrounded by beautiful scenery »

We came back for our 3rd visit here. It just seems to get better each time. Friendly reception staff and everyone that works here gives you a smile, which shows they must be happy in their work. We stayed in room 306 as this corridor has carpet and is much quieter than room 206 , where the hall is tiled. When you walk into the premier room, which is only a few pounds more than the regular rooms, you feel you are entering a suite. It has 3 windows which makes it light, with lovely views over the lake and gardens. This room has a large desk which makes it very suitable for people staying through work. I'm disabled and use an inflatable chair to sleep on when away from home and I always worry that it might be cramped, no problems here, an enormous bed, with extra large bedside tables, a wardrobe, drawers and other pieces of furniture, I could still manoeuvre my electric scooter with ease. Decent selection of teas, coffee etc. UHT milk containers and a fridge, as well as the usual complimentary bottles of water. The bathrooms have 2 sinks, a deep roll top bath and a large shower with about 4 jets as well as a loose hose for washing your hair. Good selection of toiletries. Their restaurant, the steakhouse grill, has an excellent menu, catering for most people although if you're vegetarian you would find the menu limited, but what veggie sould go to a place called the steakhouse. My husband had the Hartlepool crab and he said he'd never had a crab as tasty as this, I had the smoked salmon and instead of the usual type you get, this was a small smoked salmon steak which just melted on my tongue. We both went for the surf and turf. Bad decision in a good way. The steak was more like a families sunday joint, the lobster was really tasty and the chips were 1/2" square and served in a little chip basket. Halve way through I just couldn't eat anymore and for the first time ever, my husband couldn't finish his either. Breakfast isn't as varied as some hotels, but it suits us fine. 3 different boxes of cereal, muesli, a large selection of fruits, yogurts, pastries, and make your own toast, which I prefer. There is a good choice of cooked breakfasts which you order. This is the first hotel I have been in where you pay for your breakfasts separately but its actually a good idea, as I would imagine they get a lot of people flying from Durham Tees airport who leave too early for breakfast. At £10 for either full english or continental I think this is good valley Whether you're a family or alone, this hotel has plenty of rooms that can cater for it.

    « Very relaxed lunch »

Eaten here a few times prior to this visit and it has always been a very enjoyable experience. Surroundings are lovely with impressive grounds. Decided on the scallops and black pudding, just the right size as a starter/light bite. So after chatting awhile with our company we decided to order scones and a dessert, this is where it fell down big style. I appreciate there was a wedding going on next door, and there did seem to be enough staff serving but over 25 minutes for our scones to arrive, really? The tea and coffee we'd ordered was of course cold by the time the scones turned up, it did spoil an otherwise very enjoyable lunch.

« Lovely one night stay, great staff. »

I stayed here recently, really nice approach to the hotel, just 5 mins from the A1. Really helpful staff checked me in to room 406, which was nicely appointed, and looked out over the car park and grounds, the TV reception was a bit hit and miss. There is a really lovely low impact walk you can take around the grounds, which blew the cobwebs away after a long drive to get there. The shower room looked like it had just been redecorated, really nice, the shower could have been a bit more powerful, but the water pressure was ok and it was hot. For dinner I had a Burger in the lounge which was really tasty, the bar staff were great. Breakfast was made to order which is much better than the usual buffet service I get, the food was well cooked, and staff attentive and helpful. When I checked out it was quick and efficient, overall I would happily visit here again or with my family, and all staff were really friendly and efficient, top job!

« Wonderful surroundings, generally quite an upmarket hotel . . . but »

We popped in for lunch today but decided to have coffee and a stroll around the beautiful grounds first. The sevice and premises have always been well up to the anticipated standard on past visits. Unfortunately, today, the surly youngish bar man who overcharged us, couldn't be bothered to provide a tray for the coffee and milk, and needs to attend a "How to be polite, friendly and smile at the customers who are paying your wages" course, somewhat damaged the hotel's reputation! In addition the room was dusty, with dirty skirting and stale food on the floor under one of the tables. We enjoyed the stroll around the grounds, the coffee was ok, sorry, but you lost out on our lunch income Best Western !

    « Great Hotel »

Good Staff, Good Food, Good Bar and good rooms. Great place to stay and good value. Stayed here many times and have never been disappointed. Book a suite it's only ££20 to £30 more per night and definitely worth the extra cash for more space.

Visited here with my SIster overnight stay and dine package. Hotel is lived in but comfortable. Delux room was very good, the grounds are so relaxing and peaceful. Would like to give a special mention to all staff expecially the Steak house team, thanks for making our evening so enjoyable. We will return again for sure.

    « New Year's Eve "simply fantastic" »

We decided to spend this new year with my extended family in Durham My cousin booked us in to Hardwick At £125 each I thought it was a little dear however after the array of different foods came out I realised why. There was a melon medfly starter. Then a fish course with a choice of crab, lobster, prawns, crayfish, cockles etc.Beautiful arrangement on the table.Main course was a choice of lamb, beef, ham, turkey chicken and the full month of veg. There was a cheese course then coffee Quality was brilliant. « Macmillan Lung Cancer Ball »

We arrived at about 3pm and was booked in straight away, receptionist was polite and informative. I dreaded being allocated a certain room having read about it online - room 411. My heart sank when we were advised that we were staying in that room. However, I'm glad we didn't ask to move. The Buddha theme isn't to my taste however we thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this dark sensuous room. The bathroom is bright and modern but the room itself is dark. Be warned the bathroom has a window between the bedroom and bathroom, also, there isn't a door but the toilet is tucked away behind a wall. I'm quite shy so I found it quite uncomfortable to begin with but I made my other half sit at the other side of the bedroom and had a shower (powerful huge shower).lol. Bath robes are provided. The bed was just right for us, very comfortable and its huge! Lovely vista over the park and lake even on a dull wet day. We visited another room in the newer part of the hotel, room was modern and bight, the exact opposite of ours, which was in the original part of the building. The ball was in the Coleman Suite which looked beautiful, drink was usual hotel rates, one of our party had a glass of wine which tasted off and it was replaced straight away. The food was a set menu and was very good. A local band called The Sequel who put on a brilliant set, the dance floor was packed all night. We invited our party back to the room for drinks, they thought the room was amazing but my husband needed to go to the toilet while they were there but because of the open plan arrangement he decided to go to the toilets in the bar area. We would definitely stay at this hotel in the same room again, Hopefully the ball is there this year and we can do it all again!

    « Very picturesque »

Over the course of the past three months, my mother and I have visited a number of times for coffee etc. the bar/lounge area is very homely and calming. The music was of great taste and the food was second to none. The service has always been exceptional but the last time we were there, we felt very rushed and made to feel pushed out as it was very busy and people were waiting for tables. We will be back in the future. The afternoon tea was beautiful, and well worth the money.

« Nice break away - but very cramped in the hall »

My wife and I went for a Diane Shaw Motown night in December. We had an excellent lunch in the bar - very good quality and value. In the evening in the function hall it was very cramped and they appeared to have tried to get as many people as possible onto the tables, as there was very little elbow room. The show was spoiled by a very loud backing band - so Miss Shaw was virtually drowned out. The room had a beautiful view over the park and lake. A huge bathroom well stocked with toiletries. Cleanliness was of a very high standard and housekeeping should be commended on that. The hotel has been commented by some as a little down at heel, shabby chique to me !! Breakfast ordered in the morning was very well cooked with local produce, again very commendable. All staff were very friendly and helpful.

    « Quiet night away »

A hotel in a set in a country park with lake side views (be sure to ask for these rooms) We stayed in a deluxe double which was a large room with a full sized king bed (very comfortable) flat screen tv, tea and coffee making facilities and bottled water.Large bathroom with a big walk-in shower, bath, twin basins, wc and plenty of towels. We dinned in the Rib room restaurant and the food was first class. On the down side the fixtures and fittings are tired and in need of update. All the staff we pleasant, happy to help and made you welcome

    « Elvis Tribute night »

myself and some friends went on 2/1/16 to see an Elvis tribute act. We had a 4 course meal which was either prawn cocktail or soup ... I had soup which was good, I had butternut squash ravioli which wasn't so good but the veg served with it was rally nice. Then it was a lemon tart which was fine, all followed by tea, coffee and mints. There was a disco after the act (which was excellent) and all for £20! A really good laugh!!

    « Excellent Hotel Staff First class1 »

I visited this hotel in December with my Brother in law and Sister in law for a Xmas get together, we had a fantastic night away and the staff were all very attentive the hotel bedrooms are beautiful and the domestic staff make sure they are spotless, the beds are the best ive slept in. We decided to book again for my husbands birthday last weekend I booked two nights and we arrived on the Friday to be told we they had no booking under my name only to discover my mistake id booked for Hardwick hall manor hotel we were disappointed with my mistake but the lady on the reception said 'I'm sure it will be ok but if not we have rooms available' needless to say we returned back half hour later as the 'manor' was disgusting and not recommended to anyone. on arriving back to the reception we had a joke about the 'manor' and got booked into a lovely room, we were unpacking when a member of staff John knocked at our door with a bottle of bubbly on ice with two glassed saying ' its the least he could do' this was a unbelievable gesture as this was my mistake not the hotels but this made our weekend, we ate at the bar that night and the chicken kiev is to die for also the Mike behind the bar was very polite he is a asset the the hotel we even got another glass of bubbly each later that night on the house as did the rest of the resident's in the bar. Breakfast the next day was equally as nice at the meal the night before and the staff in the breakfast room couldn't do enough for you. We enjoyed getting shown round the hotels numerous rooms that had been done up for the next days wedding exhibition by John later that afternoon and his friendly banter is a breath of fresh air, we were also looked after very well again by Mike on the bar. Overall a fantastic hotel and the staff are are all a credit to the hotel we will defiantly be returning soon.

    « Ever Improving Venue »

I have had the good fortune to be able to see and experience the changes that have happened to this lovely Hotel. John the Manager has led from the front and brought a level of service and quality that was previously in short supply at this venue. On this occasion I was part of a table of 12, with my wife and business associates. The Room held 420+ the food was magnificent , the service excellent.

Lovely quiet hotel. Staff very friendly and very welcoming. Rooms could do with a bit of an update but overall very relaxing stay. We had room service and I have to say the food was the best. Breakfast the next morning was cooked to order and filled us for the day.

« Decent venue for Christmas however MC/DJ annoying »

We visited this hotel with fittings for our annual Xmas bash. Normally this event is a dinner dance with a live act housed in a Marquee in the grounds but this year they used its function suite. The positives. Food was of good quality and service wasn't too bad. Drinks were of a reasonable price however it was cheaper if bought from a stall set up on the dance floor at the start of the night rather than the bar. This was cash sales only and the cynical might thing that this money wasn't rang through the till therefore not declared? The live band was a Motown tribute band and were good indeed. The negatives The venue was rammed with chairs and tables I suppose to allow them to increase the revenue but as such left a small dance floor so that those who chose to dance could only shuffle it dance in the aisles around the tables. The MC/DJ as mentioned in the title was in our arrival constantly announcing about the stall on the dance floor to increase sales I suppose but I think everyone knew about it after the first or second announcement so why did he have to repeat it so many times. Secondly when the meal was served it was brought out by the waiting staff table by table. Again the DJ kept repeating that dinner was being served over and over. If some one wasn't at the table in time it was and would of been their own fault. The first announcement was sufficient given the volume of the PA system was excessively loud that it did not allow conversation at the table as you could not hear what was being said. I think out of season he must bra bingo caller as it felt as if you was in one of those places not a 4* hotel.

« Xmas day lunch special »

Did not stay but went for the Xmas day lunch set 5 courses for £75.00 including wine and bucks fizz. Very good value with excellent choices on menu. I had salmon medley as starters, followed by venison with plenty of help yourself variety of vegetables. Choice of puddings the xmas pudding was delicious served with blackberry coulis. Humongous cheese board with no restriction on how much one could eat! Santa came to the Children with good presents, could have done with a more inspiring music accompaniment throughout the meal though. As a solo diner I was a bit phased when shown to a table on my own, as room was set up as round tables for the number of family members dining, however a family invited me to their table so did enjoy having company throughout the meal. Perhaps the hotel could look at this for next year? Could have been a bit miserable otherwise. Staff were reasonably pleasant however the main barman was rather grumpy. For xmas day this was good value. Would have liked some form of entertainment.

« Stayed for a night before Christmas shopping at the Metro centre. »

We were over in the North East for shopping and decided to make a weekend of it. I knew of Hardwick Hall as a child and decided to book. We were both more than happy with the room, staff everything really. For what we had I don't think the cost was to much either. This will be a regular stop over for us now. Breakfast in bed was the clincher for us to return .

    « Annual Winter Ball »

Hardwick Hall facilitated our Annual Winter Ball and as usual the event was perfect without any hitches. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and everyone commented on how excellent the food was. The bedrooms are fantastic we had room 212 - lively spacious room with a huge bathroom. We wouldn't want to use anyone else for our business functions. Thanks again Hardwick Hall for helping us celebrate a wonderful evening with our Clients.

    « Wedding Do! »

We stayed here overnight for a wedding do. Lovely hotel and attentive staff. The room we had was quite large with an equally large bathroom with a walk in shower and full size stand a lone bath with two sinks and toilet behind in a partition. The room was very cozy the a very comfortable and spacious bed. Room had safe, tea and coffee facilities and trouser press. Breakfast order was taken for the hot food which was very nice. there was also plenty of selection cerial and toast etc. all in all a very lovely hotel which we are planning to return to this year. My daughter paid for an upgraded room and her room was exceptional. in style.

    « Premier room »

Hotel and grounds are lovely. We stayed in the premier room 212. Lovely big bed, gorgeous bathroom with a bath and shower big enough for two. Lots of little extras, bottled water, biscuits etc. Also very nice toiletries. Could not fault the room. We ate in the hotel bar and the food was quite pricey and not very nice, so I would advise to eat elsewhere.

Stayed for one night to watch Elvis tribute. Free parking, reception staff very friendly, bar staff day and night were excellent. 250 people attended tribute night which included 4 course meal. Meal was beautiful and served piping hot. Tribute to Elvis was excellent. Room overlooking the lake was fabulous. Breakfast was just what was needed after excellent night. Will definitely be staying again.

« Great for a short break in relaxing and tranquil location »

We regularly stay at this hotel when visiting family in the area, and we are never disappointed. There is an excellent food menu for the restaurant, the staff are friendly and very obliging, and the rooms very comfortable. The hotel is situated in the country next to Hardwick Park, so you can go for a bracing walk or run around a large lake and through a wooded area, on metalled paths. There is no fitness gymn but who needs it with such an opportunity to get exercise and fresh air. This is a popular venue for weddings and large events so get a room in the 'New Wing' which is away from the function rooms and very quiet. Breakfast can be a bit chaotic after wedding celebrations the night before when many guests stay over, so the trick is to eat early!

Family of 4 attended the Gala Ball and stayed over. Rooms large, well appointed with good views. Very enjoyable evening, good service. Buffett meal plentiful but average. Band and disco great. « Best New Year party, ever....... »

We decided to splash out but more this and went for the all inclusive £125 per head gala ball with free bar, and oh boy it was the best decision of 2015. What a ball it was, the food was spectacular. We have been to some events over the years but this was nothing short of stunning. I have never seen a bigger lump of beef served like it was here, in fact it was a whole leg. The fish buffet and sweet selection was amazing as was the choice of drinks - all included. We had a great time, non of the pomp although it was black tie. Totally amazing night and big thank you to the staff????

    « Afternoon tea "treat"! »

Well, what can I say. I booked afternoon tea here for four of us for a Christmas treat and catch up with friends. I booked for 3pm and when we arrived just before 3, without even asking my name, the gentleman at the bar told us he would see if there was a table free. It would've been nice to have been asked if we had a booking, and a table ready for us or even an apology for there not being, and to have been shown to our table!?! He just said there was an empty one he would clear for us and came back telling us it was ready, telling us which way to go to find it. The table was clear but was still wet from being cleaned and was looking a little worse for wear. Never mind, our friends arrived and joined us, and we waited patiently at the table to be served. 25 minutes passed and we were still waiting! I was feeling a little ashamed as we don't see our friends often and as I had booked the treat I felt i was letting them down. The people at the next table (with lovely comfy sofas) were giving up and going home (carrying their own plate to Reception to complain about the poor service and to ask for a doggy bag) as they had waited so long to be served and gave up on their refill of coffee! We decided to move to the comfy sofas and began to clear the table ourselves in the hope that staff would realise we were still waiting to be served. A lovely gentleman came and cleared our table but we still didn't even get asked if we'd like tea of coffee etc. We felt invisible. Eventually we had to ask a passing member of staff if our afternoon tea was on it's way? He said he would just seat some other people and come back to us to take our order which he did, only to return a few minutes later to inform us that the kitchen were short of scones and that we'd need to wait for twenty minutes while they made some fresh. I just couldn't believe that we had booked something for 3pm and at 3.40pm our drinks order was just being taken, then no scones! In all fairness, as the lounge and bar quietened down the service did improve, we were regularly offered refills of the tea and coffee and the food was lovely ... Especially the hot scones! The table was cleared once we had finished and the bill was brought to us, however we were not given a "doggy bag", the food was just cleared away. In my previous afternoon tea experiences we have always been offered the remaining food to take home. There was a lovely atmosphere when we were the only people left in the lounge as there were beautiful Christmas decorations, it was getting dark as it had taken so long and Michael Buble was playing in the background so it was nice and relaxing once we were being served in more of an expected manor. Having worked in a hotel myself in the past I do understand what it is like to be busy but staff really need to be more aware of customers and apologise for delays etc.

    « Kids Christmas party »

Went for our Christmas lunch and Santa. Food itself a bit a la carte but nice. Lots of things for kids to do. Face paint, balloons, bouncy castle, bubble man, stilt walker all included in the cost. Santa very quiet and lacked animation but still a great day for kids 13,10 and 6.

    « Christmas Party Experience »

14, all in our 60/70s attended the Christmas Party with the tribute band Qween, what an exceptionally enjoyable night. The three course meal, considering the numbers they were catering for was excellent and food hot and very tasty. The tribute band could not have entertained better, and the disco had us all 'bopping' continuously. What a good night had by all, can't wait till next years Christmas Party.

« Best Christmas lunch ever »

We had our Christmas meal here on Monday and it was lovely. The surrounding were beautiful, the hotel was nicely decorated, very clean and extremely friendly - in particular a lady called Margaret who looked after us on the day. The starters were fresh and very well presented. The main course was extremely tasty and not too meagre. To follow the desserts were all excellent. Could not fault it and the afore mentioned lady Margaret had a wicked sense of humour. Well recommended. Thanks for your excellent hospitality.

    « Great sleep! »

This is a hotel I stay in regularly and I've reviewed a number of times before. The latest visit found me placed in Room 401 which is in the old house overlooking the courtyard and directly above the breakfast area. I've stayed in a number of rooms in both the old and the new sections - always a different room. Room 401 is at the end of a corridor and so in relatively quiet. There is some noise from the room below but to be honest, you'd have to be very sensitive for it to cause you any problems. My first impression of the room was that it was quite chilly. There is no means to turn up the heating. Having said that, I'd rather a room too cold than a room too hot. You can always snuggle into the duvet in a cold room. The room is quite small compared to the others I've been in but again, that was quite nice. It felt more like a room at home to me, and I think that contributed to a good nights sleep. In fact, I can't remember the last time I've had such a good night in a hotel room. Other nice touches is the selection of teas and coffee with the kettle in the wardrobe. The ensuite is smart and nicely decorated with a good selection of smellies. Once again, breakfast was the let down. The Full English is okay but the sausages are not great. Also, I don't know if it's grapefruit juice they use but it always seems to be either off or going off. The waiting staff in the morning are fine but just a bit inattentive with little interaction and no smiles. Overall, I like to hotel - not one of my favourites but better than most.

    « Fabulous Christmas dinner for 16 »

Hardwick Hall Hotel is a beautiful Park and hotel. Although I've only used the conference facilities and restaurant, I have to say that it never disappoints. This is reflected - the place is always busy. Today (Sunday 13 Dec) they had 300 children in the main hall for a Christmas party, and still fitted numerous parties into the dining room with more space in the bar. Vegetarian food excellent, tasty and set price £20 for 3 courses. Waiters and waitresses attentive to the small children and flexible. Couldn't fault it.

« Stayed while in area for formal event »

I get to UK two to three times a year for work and enjoy getting to the North of England. Had big formal event at nearby estate. My room at Hardwick was not typical hotel layout. Really comfortable decor and finish - more like warm home feel. Bathroom was really nice with cool layout. Didn't use tub, but my wife would have loved it. Bed was nice and comfortable. Loved the common areas downstairs. Bar was nice appointed. Had English feel. My favorite part was the yummy full English breakfast and staff was friendly and engaging. I loved that the place had history as an estate and you could see the folly and other features around the pond/property. Would definitely stay there when I'm in Tees Valley/Durham area again. Well done!

    « Charity Ball »

I recently stayed at this hotel in relation to work purposes. The staff on site where really helpful and attentive, making sure we were happy. The bar area was cosy & although indidnt eat in there, the food looked lovely. I also seen afternoon tea being served which again looked really nice. The bedroom was just down the corridor from reception, upon entering it was a pleasant surprise - the room was modern & sleek. The bathroom was very spacious with a separate bath, shower cubicle & toilet. The breakfast was tasty & you get to choose from the menu which is quite nice. The Christmas decorations really added some extra charm to the property. I would stay here again for a leisure break.

    « DEVIOUS BAR STRATEGY »

The bar ran out of normal pint size Bulmers cider and said they only had half bottles left (the fridge was full of them). I asked for 2 half bottles for the price of a pint bottle and they said NO. I then asked to see the manager to which more pint bottles were brought into the bar. The bar staff said that they were told to sell the half bottles. Very devious for a 4 star hotel!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    « Daisy Chain Ball »

We booked a suite to stay over at the daisy chain ball. Reception staff were pleasant, bar staff seemed somewhat unhappy not overtly friendly. Suite was spacious, clean and warm. Very comfortable bed and shower was adequate. Food at the ball was mediocre tinned soup to start and dessert of sticky toffee pudding was particularly dire. Breakfast in the morning - staff accommodating and friendly full English was substandard cheap sausages, bacon soggy, black pudding hard and dry. Nice surroundings and room but let down by the food on this occasion.

    « Butterwick's Bolliwood Charity Night »

We have been before and actually, things were not, The very 'Best'; It's very hard and stressful to ensure everyone is impressed. However, in the Grand Ballroom, on the night of 21st November; Best Western staff, along with Kim Marsh, produced a Night for all to Remember! The presentation was down to Butterwick staff and Volunteers alike; They dressed the Hall superbly, there was nought that one would dislike. Supporting cast, a Spectacular Troop of capable Indian Dancers; Then throughout the meal a divine quartet played quietly to Romance Us! The Caterers produced a plethora of quality ethnic food; Whilst capable staff slid silently amongst the Dining Brood. Drinks were served efficiently and the prices were not to steep; As the perfect night came to a close we retired to our room to sleep. Clean and spacious was our room, with sumptuous decoration; We were comfortable and slept quite well without too much alcohol addiction! Despite atrocious weather we felt very much at home; Don't miss this Hotel within attractive grounds, should to the North East, you roam!!

    « Fawlty Towers »

First thoughts when I checked in was that the hotel looked very tired and in definite need of a facelift. The receptionist was lovely, took full payment for the room when I arrived and helped me to room with my luggage (I was travelling with 6 year old). First impression of room was that it looked fine, big, with bath in room and shower room separate, but again quite dated. It was only when we jumped in to bed that I noticed all the cobwebs - obviously the housekeeper had never looked up. The room was not particularly warm. In the morning there was no hot water for shower and no water pressure. I brought this to the attention of reception and asked for both things to be seen to. While the cobwebs were removed, nothing was done about the shower. The room was so cold on the 2nd night that I could not sleep. The room had no heating at all in bathroom, the towel rail by bath did not come on once. Again I had no shower in the morning. When I checked out I complained to reception - I was told there was no one to speak to so I left my email address and asked management to contact me. I can cope with a hotel that is in need of a facelift but the least that I expect is for my room to be clean, warm and have hot water. None of these basics were met. After completing an online survey for best western, the hotel emailed me. I have requested a refund.

Attended our friends wedding. Whilst I cant comment on the accommodation as we didn't stop due to school run commitments the next day. However speaking to several other people who were stopping. The accommodation sounds top notch. Food was superb and you didn't feel hungry after the wedding breakfast unlike other establishments I have been to. Staff were lovely. Location is stunning. My only negative was they didn't sell bar snacks (it was a long wait in between the ceremony and wedding breakfast)

Superb stay, reception staff (Lauren & Chloe) were very friendly. Room was a "premier" room, and was very well equipped, view over the lake. Rib Room was decent, I'm not sure it was worth the price as the steak is no better than other places, considering they are predominately steak, I would have expected more. Service in the Rib Room was great. Salvador is a particular asset to the management team. Overall a fantastic stay.

    « Sad celebration »

I recently spent an evening at Hardwick Hall celebrating a friends special birthday. The function room was in a split level set up, I have to say it took me four attempts to find a clean chair to sit on. The food was very average for such an establishment and it was a far cry from the previous event I attended there. I think it is desperately in need of a makeover and I feel it will be some time before I return.

« Great hotel, good location, »

This hotel is nice, it's large hotel with large function rooms. I had the deluxe room which has a huge bed and a very nice bathroom. The bedroom was nicely decorated clean and a good size. The bathroom is very big, a great iron free standing bath and a large walk in shower with good pressure. The hotel is quite remote, so you tend to stay in the hotel and use the bar and restaurant. The bar is good offering food. The restaurant is a steak house, and if you don't like steak there is not much left to choose from on the mains. If you like steak, you cannot ask for the wrong cut. I would stay again, but I would like to see more variety on the restaurant menu.

    « Birthday treat »

My husband booked a night at Hardwick Hall for a birthday treat for me as we got married here earlier in the year and had a fantastic day. After the quality of the room we had at the wedding (premier room) we decided we wants to try each of the premier rooms. The first room we stayed in was room 216, fantastic room, the only slight criticism is the shower tends to overflow, due to old plumbing we were told, take any longer then 15 mins and the bathroom becomes a swimming pool. However, with this is in mind we'd happily stay in this room as the overall quality not to mention the outstanding view far outweigh the slight inconvenience. For our next visit we stayed in room 411, and wow! Decorated in Browns and golds with a very distinct Buddha theme this room feels very luxurious, perfect for a romantic night away. Again the view was amazing, overlooking the lake. The comfiest bed I have ever slept in. No issues with the shower in this room and a very deep bath. Slightly put off by the fact there was no door to the bathroom but this wasn't an issue as we only stayed the one night. Cannot wait to return and try another of the Premier rooms :)

    « A refuge from fog »

Over 3 days we had planned visits to Durham, Bishop Auckland and North Yorkshire and our main criterion for choosing a hotel was ease of parking and proximity to motorway. However we found the hotel had much more to offer - a splendid parkland location (though we didn't see much of this on account of the fog), really friendly staff, excellent meals both in restaurant and lounge, a great choice at breakfast a great big room at a very reasonable price, and everything spotlessly clean.

    « Amazing lunch »

We enjoyed lunch in the lounge area. The food was delicious. Service was really friendly. It is nice to see the park out of the windows. The hotel has lovely surroundings The only negative is that the food and drinks are a little expensive. If it was better value we would visit more often for lunch.

    « Very Good Venue. »

Attended a party at the hotel last night. The party included a 3 course sit down meal. The food, considering the amount of people eating, was very good. Served hot and in a timely manner. The hotel certainly has got it right. It's an ideal venue for a party.

« Great hotel in a beautiful setting »

Stayed at Hardwick Hall for one night with my boyfriend and it's a perfect hotel for a romantic night away. The rooms are a little old fashioned in decor but it just adds to the romance of the hotel. Very comfy bed and a good strong shower. The setting is beautiful and it's well worth taking a walk around the lake. The steak restaurant is very good and the breakfast is a real highlight.

    « Nice Surroundings - Good Hotel »

Booked for a short stay. Super large room and bathroom with power shower and roll top bath on lower ground overlooking the lake. Fab breakfast, helpful friendly staff, easy check in and out. In the grounds of Hardwick Country Park. Some decor (breakfast room) looking a little tired. Hotel perfectly adequate for our needs.

    « Beautiful Setting »

My husband and I stayed for one night recently. The room was extremely spacious, well appointed and very comfortable. We were attending a family birthday celebration. The hotel was busy with two weddings but this certainly did not affect the service and food served. Both excellent.

    « An interesting experience »

I was surprised by this hotel having never been before. The setting is spectacular and for that itself we will go again. All the staff we met across the board were brilliant and looked after us very well....they have obviously been well trained in customer care and that was from the cleaning staff to every other department....we couldnt fault the service with a smile, and everyone was so helpfull. The hotel was very clean and very warm which on a cold autumn weekend was fantastic. We got a cheap deal but were given a huge room at the front overlooking the lake which was spectacular. The food was good in the bar on the first night but was even better in the restaurant on the second. The art work throughout the building is a bit eclectic but it makes it feels it hasnt been over designed and i quite liked that in an odd sort of way!...it reminded me of my parents house so felt like someones home rather than a chain hotel. My only criticism and it is a large one is that is that the bed was very uncomfortable as it was the softest matress I have ever slept on.... actually I didnt sleep well at all. Would I stay again...definately yes but i would forgo the large room with a view for a firm matress and a smaller room. We arrived on a friday and can I just say thankyou to the small blonde lady who worked behind the bar and served us part of our meal for her charm , efficiency and sence of humour ...she was brilliant.

« First lunch at Hardwick hall. »

First time we had been to Hardwick hall, and as we drove up towards the Hotel, and saw the lake, with Canada geese feeding, it certainly was picturesque. Beautiful countryside, added to the surroundings. We had booked for 12;30 and were taken straight into the dining room, which was very nice. The waiter service was extremely good, the staff very pleasant and attentive. Our lunch arrived within 10 minutes, and was very good. Home made Yorkshire puddings and delicious beef. With mixed vegatables. My wife had pork which she thought was delicious, and could barely eat it all, good portions. We had dessert which was just as good, after which we were both fit to burst. The 2 course meal was £15. 3 course is £19.99. We thoroughly enjoyed the lunch although drinks are not cheap, so next time we will not have any, as after the meal tea or coffee is included. Hope this helps you decide.

    « Average at best »

Stayed here for a night late October with my partner. Check in was swift and easy and we were given our key card. We were given room 406 which was on the second floor. The room itself was alot smaller than anticipated with barely enough room to swing a cat. The room itself was well equipped with Wi-Fi, trouser press, toiletries etc.. the usual things. Room was quite cold with a cheap plug in heater provided to take the chill off, not the best method but a method never the less. We drank in the lobby bar which was well over priced for no greater quality alcohol than you'd find at any where else. Bar bill was as equal to that of the room bill. Breakfast the next morning was pretty dire. Again massively over priced for a poor quality, clearly cooked hours in advance and left on a hot plate. Really would expect freshly cooked and good quality produce for such an establishment. Overall a pleasant if not an overpriced stay, chances are I would not return.

« Business stay at Hardwick Hall Hotel »

I was greeted with very friendly staff. Room was absolutely fantastic. As a female travelling solo it is important to feel safe. I had no problems at this hotel and would recommend it. Checkout was speedy. overall a great stay.

    « Bad sleeping arrangements »

Disappointed with the sleeping arrangements. A king size bed with two separate single duvets. Paid £95 for this and no hotel should dress a bed in this manner. Spent the night awake fighting duvets instead of a lovely relaxing couples break away

« Nice grounds but Hotel in need of some attention »

This Hotel is situated in beautiful surroundings, with a lake and Hardwick Park close by and well located for Sedgefield racecourse, town centre, Durham and other local attractions with easy access to main roads. Check in and Check out where fast and efficient and staff were friendly. Room was small but had adequate facilities with free WiFi, a double bed, alarm clock radio, trouser press, TV, Tea and Coffee with Biscuits, Small safe (not large enough for my laptop unfortunately), Fruit and some sweets, writing desk and chair, wardrobe and trouser press, ensuite bathroom with toilet, bath and shower and complimentary toiletries. Views at front of Hotel are beautiful but the rear overlooks out buildings and a carpark. Drinks at the bar were a little expensive, almost £10 for a double scotch on the rocks (single malt). Biggest disappointment was breakfast, £10 each for full English but we had to wait for a table to be prepared, which was then given to another couple who just walked in, we pointed this out to staff and were then seated at a table which still had used plates and cups etc on it. These were removed but the table cloth, which was badly stained was left and the chair had dried food all down the back of it. When fresh cutlery was laid , my fork had dried food still attached to it and I had to ask to have it replaced and the cooked breakfast was only luke warm when it arrived. Not impressed at all and not the standard I would expect of a 4 star Hotel and that is why I have only given an average rating.

    « Wedding »

Visited here for a wedding in october, the wedding itself was absolutely amazing and beautiful. The rooms were nice but not sure I would stay here again if I didn't have an event to go to, rooms were just average. Drinks prices were really reasonable they are often absolutely extortionate at places like this but I didn't feel ripped off at all. Pleased toy didn't have to pay for parking either!! Really easy to get to aswell

« Pleasant and relaxing stay »

We stayed in one of their most luxurious rooms for one night in February. We got a lovely pleasant surprise when we walked in the room, it was very spacious and tastefully decorated. The bed was definitely the biggest I have slept on in a hotel rooms but unfortunately it was the hardest I have ever slept on to the point it was hurting my hips :-( It had a lovely view of the lake as well. We ate in the rib room that night which was fantastic and very quiet for a weekend, not sure why. I think the breakfast room is in need of some serious TLC, I actually think most of the downstairs space is very tired looking.

    « Star of the North ... »

John Adamson et al .... What a great job over the years you have done with this place It is my number one recommendation to stay within the North East, I have read the reviews and can agree with some aspects . As a venue for weddings birthdays I think this is the best in the area Parking is extensive. The setting is beautiful. The fabric of the hotel is excellent. I personally am not a fan of marquees and therefore cannot comment on party nights or fund raising events held in them. I have held about four private events within the hotel buildings and used the accomdation and the event reflects the host's planning budget and requests of the hotel. Ours have never disappointed. The hotel accommodation is outstanding value and the suites are the best in the north east. Sunday lunch ....hmm good times bad times as per previous reviewer. Margaret local staff member outstanding;,her longstanding male colleague should be best behind the scenes ; he was absolute torture to order a vegetarian Sunday lunch from. Breakfast ; it's ok . The time available to order food is far better than the nearby much acclaimed Wynyard hall that concludes breakfast by 9.30 or starve So well done Hardwick Hall Suggestion ; possible upgrade of crockery and tea pots etc required ???

    « Dinner »

Having been quite a few times before we were Very disappointed when visiting in March and in fact 'walked out' and subsequently complained to the manager about the VERY poor service. HOWEVER........we went again on Monday 5th October and we had an excellent meal, the service was second to none and the quality and presentation of the food was faultless... We still feel a little peeved about our previous experience (It was a Birthday treat) but this latest experience has gone a long way to putting that behind us....and YES we will be going back.....Well done !!

    « Not A Bad Stay »

I stayed here whilst traveling on business. On arrival plenty of parking and reception very helpful on check in, my room card would not work and this was fixed quickly. Rooms are of a high standard spotless clean huge bathroom and great bath and shower huge bed very comfortable and the decor was very good. I did not eat in the restaurant but from a previous stay is was very good. I had a good nights sleep not disturbed at all and had breakfast here and this is the reason did not give the hotel five stars. Their was a good choose of cereals juice , but it's not a buffet hot breakfast you have to order and wait. When I did receive this over cooked bacon no sausages and it was not cooked in nice way. I would much prefer a buffet and you choose what you want. The stay is self overall was good and such beautiful grounds it in in checkout quick and efficient to, they just need a better breakfast system. I did

    « Birthday Party Night »

Love the grounds & have visited often. First time we'd been to a party night (Bouble/Murrs) for my birthday. The entertainment was great but I was very disappointed by the food which was a buffet. Other Best Westerns do a sit down meal on their party evenings & it's the same price or in some cases less. Their was limited choice the best things were the macaroni cheese & the rolls. We had no choice of dessert & it was a very heavy sticky toffee kind of cake that most of us didn't finish & I wouldn't have chosen if I'd had a choice. We would definitely go back as the overall experience was good but the food is definitely letting a great hotel down.

    « Nice for lunch »

We arrived at 2 for lunch, just as the pianist was finishing which was a shame. The place is huge with many conference halls etc. The food was good, but service was a little sporadic. We were a party of 15, and the waiter had begun to clear plates for starters before we had all been served (we had waited for so long, some had tucked in while others still waited). We also had to fetch our own drinks from the bar which was in another room.

    « Always return! »

Been staying here for a few years for the odd night or two, and still love coming back. Great location, excellent restaurant, rooms are good too. Not been disappointed so far, so hoping that remains the case! Great place to stay for business or pleasure. Plus, a good selection of some very nice wines, and a selection of real ales too. So something for everyone.

« Butterwick Hospice Fundraiser - Manu Tuigliani - Rugby Union »

The turnout was fantastic for such a worthy cause; But sadly, the Hotel doesn't deserve the same applause. We are sitting at a cold table in 'The Grand Marquee'; Thank goodness it's the best one otherwise there'd be ice atop our tea! Whilst the meal was really perfect the seats are very hard; Especially when your bums a little over ten pounds of lard. Suffice to say we laughed and chattered whilst England played there best; This our second disappointing visit, on their laurel's they should not rest! It took over 20 minutes to start clearing our main plates; Hardwick Hall needs a better plan if its to build our 'rates'!!

    « Excellent Hotel »

Fantastic suite, staff polite and helpful. Stayed here many times and definitely coming back again. A warm greeting from reception followed by a nice beer in the bar, plenty of choice and fantastic food at reasonable prices in the restaurant. Watch out for the daily specials.
