    « Our wedding »

I absolutely love this place. We got married here last month. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a bit off an issue with the cake when we arrived the day before. One of the chefs Chris had a look and with in two hours he had fixed it. Our wedding co ordination Anita was absolutely amazing. I was so relax about the whole day knowing she was organising everything for us.

    « Great Hotel »

Working in area, usually stay at Hexham, no more, this is a great hotel, the staff are friendly and nothing is a bother, breakfast from 7am is well run, cooked to order and really quick, dining in bar area is fantastic, meals are well cooked and big portions, room was spacious and very comfortable , also has a gym if you want it, no bad points at all

    « Weekend treat »

An evening meal with bed & breakfast. What a fabulous place. A great room, warm and friendly staff and an unbelievable meal. This place will be seeing us again. My wife's just said it's one of the best meals she's had. Michele and Christopher in the restraunt were incredibly attentive, first class. Excellent customer service delivery.

    « Anniversary »

Hubby booked a Sunday carvery lunch for our wedding anniversary, as we married here 14 years ago. Restaurant lovely & staff friendly enough. Plenty of good food in carvery, 3 courses for £14, great value. Strangely given a knife & fork to eat our dessert with, but soon found a spoon! Good memories ????

« Fantastic venue and attentive staff »

We were at Derwent Manor for my daughters wedding. The bedroom had been refurbished to a high standard and was very comfortable. The room for the wedding was excellent and the staff were brilliant. Nothing was too much bother and they helped the day run smothly. The food was tasty and piping hot.

    « Lacks staff »

Stopped for a lunch time snack/meal. went to bar to order and the sole person on duty said there would be a wait as he had to make 6 lattes! During the wait he managed to clear away plates. He then phoned for help but no one came. After 30 minutes we left and had a delightful meal at The Manor House Inn up the road with a warm, friendly and efficiency service.

    « 3rd visit this year »

Stayed here 3 times this year now on the dinner wine/champagne bed and breakfast deal. This time we brought our 5 year old and he loved it, staff in restaurant on the evening were so good with him and let him create his own pizza to keep him entertained. This time we stayed in one of the newer rooms which were so nice and modern, tassimo machine, huge bath, huge tv, decor was crushed velvet... looked soo nice. Food for the evening meal was amazing as it has been every time and every single member of staff were as ever polite and friendly. The restaurant is just as nicely decorated as the rooms, modern and nicely spread out. Breakfast was the same... lovely food and lovely staff. They were resurfacing the car parks which we heard some people complaining about but it was clearly signposted and the work wasn't getting in the way of anyone's stay, they started after 9am and had signs in place. Check out staff were lovely too and even said we could use the pool again so our little one could have a swim before we went home. Great value and lovely hotel whether visiting as a couple or bringing the little one along, will deffo be back for a 4th visit.

« Even better than last time »

Even though I have already reviewed this hotel I felt our second visit merited another one. They have got even better since my last visit. Bar was wonderful and welcoming, staff were very friendly and helpful - prices more like bar prices than hotel prices. Our room was freshly renovated - they are doing rooms at the moment but there was no noise before 09.00. Afternoon tea was lovely and served in the bar could not eat all of it as there was so much. Evening meal was lovely but as they were extremely busy for a Sunday night we were waiting a long time between courses. This is our only complaint. The best thing about our night away was the price= what an excellent deal from Groupon. Will be going back again.

    « Really pleased! »

We stayed for a long weekend commencing Friday 21 October. Two weddings took place over the break and although there were a lot of people, they did not affect our trip. The room was very good (if a bit dark) and we were absolutely delighted with the evening meal and breakfast arrangements. Special note for Chris in the restaurant, who was totally professional at all times! Car Parking was good and the city of Newcastle was just over 20 miles away. Value for money was brilliant!

    « " Excellent " Friendly Obliging Staff . »

On arrival we received a warm welcome, the room we were allocated had recently been refurbished, and to a high standard. On the first night we dined in the recently refurbished restaurant, there was a good choice on the menu , the food was cooked and presented to a high standard, the service throughout the evening was excellent , the prices were very good value . The Breakfast menu again was very good with a great choice , the cooked Breakfast was individually cooked for you, and again very well presented, all the waitresses were attentive and very pleasant. When the refurbishment is complete ,I would expect their present 3 star rating to be upgrade to a 4 star rating.

« Nice refurb and friendly staff »

Stayed for a 2 night mid week short break and found the hotel to be undergoing a refurbishment. The room we were allocated was recently refurbished to a high standard and was very comfortable. The staff were extremely friendly even to the workmen on the refurb. who were apologetic about their equipment and dust sheets being out in a corridor.

« One night at Derwent »

Stayed one night on Business, probably won't ever stay again. The room was excellent very clean and everything you needed in a hotel room. The Spa, the spa was not clean with a postage stamp pool and overall needed a deep clean from showers to changing room to pool area. Dinner was in the bar rather than the restaurant, maybe that was my mistake, the food could only be described as "&@?/-" and that's about as polite as I can be. Service was excellent the staff friendly and helpful. One thing I can shout about is the breakfast, the best thing about my stay. Next time I will book into a premier inn.

« Lovely break at Derwent Manor »

Birthday break at Derwent a Manor went very well. Luckily we had a recently refurbished room. The hotel is well into a total upgrade. It is a lovely quiet location. The gym and pool were very nice, as was the restaurant and the quality of the food on offer. Staff were friendly and very helpful. Had a great deal though Groupon and would definately use again.

    « Overnight stop »

It was a great pity that we were not informed there were not only one but two weddings going on the night we stayed. We couldn't eat in the restaurant or pub due to the wedding parties so we drove out to another restaurant. That wasn't the real issue though. Disco music played very loudly until 1 o clock. The mattresses on the beds were on a slope from people having sat on them so much. the furniture was tatty and tired and past it's sell by date. An appropriate name would be the worse western! I have complained as we couldn't sleep and we didn't want to hang around for breakfast and have been offered a free night in one of their refurbished rooms - thus the one star! A very bad night for £170.....

    « Daughter's wedding »

Stayed at this lovely hotel for our daughters wedding what an absolutely lovely place . There are renovations going on at the moment but nothing disruptive . The newer rooms are stunning and the allensford suite where the wedding service and reception were held was gorgeous . The food is really lovely i had piri piri chicken the chicken was very moist the setting for the hotel is stunning countryside its just a pity that the ground was damp so couldn't pose on the grass for photos as it would have ruined the dress but that not the hotel fault . The staff were lovely and everything went smoothly . The only blot on the day was some miserable woman who came into the bar while we were waiting to go back to the suite for the reception and said rather loudly (oh god bloody noisy kids thats all i need . Well love if you don't like kids go stay in a kid free hotel . She also had the cheek to moan that there were to many people in the reception area as she was on her way back to her room after breakfast misey ) so apart from said woman everything was fabulous .

    « Half term break, 26-28th October 2016 »

Half term family trip. We booked this hotel because of its locality to Durham, Newcastle and the north east coast, and we weren't disappointed. The staff are always going to be one of the greatest assets to any hotel, and I can only say that the staff here are absolutely magnificent. So polite and helpful. The hotel is being refurbished at the moment, and in all fairness, it is due, but we weren't disturbed by the people working there, the room we were in was very comfortable, the breakfast was excellent, good facilities on site, pool, sauna, exercise suite etc. Great views from the rooms. We wouldn't hesitate in staying here again, hopefully in the spring time. Big thank you to all the staff. Just one other point, I noticed that there is a charging facility for electric vehicles on site, so if you have an EV, don't be put off from staying.

    « " Excellent Value and Service " »

Four of us arrived for our prebooked Afternoon Tea at the Derwent Manor and were shown to our table which was set in the bar with the usual cutlery on a white linen tablecloth . Our teas and coffee pots arrived followed by two table stands with the " Tea" on. One plate with a selection on sandwiches , one with two scones / jar of cream / and jar of jam , and one with an assortment of cakes / tarts and buns . All delicious and fresh and well presented. Karen the lady who looked after us was very attentive , polite and friendly . Looking forward to our next visit and seeing the " New " bar when it's finished.

« Nice, rooms quite dated »

My boyfriend bought us a groupon deal which included B&B, 3 course meal, a bottle of wine and use of the leisure facilities. We checked in and went up to our room. Room was spacious enough, bathroom was very dated. Nice views out of our window. We had 2 double beds which we pushed together. The beds were very comfortable. Being in room 237, we were quite far away from the wedding party however could still hear the music. We went to the pool area. The lady was very nice and welcoming, even lending us £1 for a locker. Changing rooms were clean and tidy with a hair dryer and ghd straighteners. The pool facilities are small but do the job. We went for our evening meal. The restaurant is very modern and tastefully decorated. We had the option of ordering off the set menu (which would have been £22 if we didn't have this included in our deal). There was plenty to chose from. I would highly recommend the dishes I had (mushroom crostini, sea bass and prawns and the trio of deserts). The chef apologised for the wait- he wasn't happy with the first sea bass he cooked so made a fresh one. We ended the evening in the bar downstairs. The bar was busy as there was a function in the opposite room and guest were using this bar. The staff were under a lot of pressure. It took about 10 minutes to get a drink but staff made the best and apologised for the wait. Breakfast the next morning was also tasty. It was a buffet in which you helped yourself to a range of hot plates including; sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs, hash browns, black pudding, mushrooms etc. There was a pastry section, a table full of fruit, cereals, yoghurts and fresh juice. I would come back to the hotel and recommend it to friends... I'm aware they're doing refurbishments to the rooms which are very much needed.

« OK. Neither Very good or Very bad »

We got married in this hotel 11 years ago so for my husbands 50th Birthday I booked 2 rooms and a table in the restaurant for 10 people. The room looked like it had not changed in 11 years nor had the reception or its carpets. Lighting in room was poor as was the fittings in the bathroom. Bath was not one you would want a long soak in. Old fashioned hairdryer and a rail with some hangers for a wardrobe. The hotel room was not cheap at £118 and the room did not live up to its price tag. The hotel is under refurbishment and some rooms look like they are being changed and the function rooms have been refreshed. The upstairs restaurant is lovely very well decorated and laid out. Reception girls were lovely as were all staff. I dropped balloons off and pre ordered champagne for the table which was no issue at all for them. Meal itself was very slow to arrive and the menu didn't make it clear that dishes did not come with sides etc so there was issues when food arrived. The manager kindly compensated us with some wine for the trouble. The following morning breakfast was good quality and quantity of food was fine. I asked the same manager for my balloons as I wanted to take them home as we were having another get together. It became clear that the hotel had thrown them out as he couldn't find them. This was a 6ft 7 balloon arrangement so not hard to lose. To make up for it I was again given 2 bottles which was nice but I would rather have my £30 balloon arrangement than 2 bottles I could buy for £10 at a supermarket. I had to spend another £30 for the next party. Manager was very apologetic and agreed it should not have happened. Nice Guy. I would go back to the hotel once the refurbishment has been completed as I think its a nice setting and with what has been redecorated so far it will be nice and may warrant its price point.

« Beautiful hotel with lovely views »

Came here on a groupon deal. Visited the spa on arrival as we were a little early to check in and really enjoyed gazing out at the fabulous view in the hot tub. Our room was really well decorated and had 2 double beds, a huge tv, a wireless sound system and a coffee maker which was a nice touch. The view from the window was so relaxing and the bathroom was lovely with nice toiletries. The room was very clean and the bed was comfortable. Both my fiance and I slept really well. Our meal (which was included in the price) was absolutely beautiful. The only downside was the service, which was incredibly slow and had no logic to it, with the couple next to us coming in well after us but getting asked for their order first. However, the manager (I think he was the manager) was very apologetic about this and gave us a free bottle of prosecco which made us quickly forgive the poor service! We had a lovely walk in the surroundings and then headed to derwent reservoir the next day feeling utterly refreshed and relaxed. It was a great trip and we would love to go back.

    « Always a Winner! »

Called in today with the Family for the Sunday Carvery , again we were not disappointed. We were greeted as always by the very friendly & helpful restaurant staff and seated close to the kitchen. We opted for just the one course choosing the beef & turkey , which was served with a great choice of fresh vegetables and a giant Yorkshire pudding. At £8.95 it's a great price and the decor and surroundings of the recently refurbished restaurant makes it a great place to go for any occasion.

    « Poor, very poor »

Ok, on arrival we were greeted by a lovely girl in reception who couldn't have been nicer and done anything for us, we left her and that is where it has gone downhill, on entering our room we were greeted by seriously dated decor, the bed bases were the noisiest I have ever experienced, the duvets looked like they'd been put in the dryer, there were clumps of padding in some places and none in others which makes the sleep interesting to say the least, we had a 3 course set dinner in the restaurant, the staff it seems don't know what they are doing, it also seems the "head chef" has high standards so refused to send out some food, I had the rolled herring and it was vinegary and awful, my wife had the vegetable soup and it clearly needed salt, my wife ordered a call one for main and it was literally dough, with a hint of undercooked pepperoni and a cold tomato sauce, I had the sea bass which was very very cheesy, by the time we got our mains we had sat in the restaurant which had 8 couples in, and a party if 10,which you would think a place like this would be able to handle, well they couldn't.. We had the trio if desserts which were disgusting to say the least, it had all just come out of a fridge and no effort put in whatsoever, by this time we had been in the restaurant for 2 hours, we were unable to get the bill (which consisted of one pint of heineken) because the waiter had messed up the party of ten's order, and had to ask them to reorder, all the while myself and my wife, 2 hours 15 mins in are sitting twiddling our thumbs being very English, getting very annoyed very quietly, until we were forced into demanding the bill, 10 mins later we were given the bill £3.95 and suffice to say, there was no tip left.. We have stayed once before and didn't like it, we thought we would give it a second try as we got a good deal on Groupon, I'm now wishing J would have bought the stay at Redworth Hall, which in our opinion is 1 million times better than this place, seriously people if you are aged between 25-40,then try and avoid, or you will be seriously disappointed ??

    « A disappointing and over-priced experience »

This is a large rambling hotel with steps up and down and very poor signage. Our room was apparently newly renovated. This means it has been decorated in black and browns and a huge TV installed. The furniture is all black. If you didn't feel miserable before, half an hour in the gloomy room changes all that. The enormous bed had the usual pointless cushions and the dim lighting and 6 pillows (3 piles of 2) made us wonder if they are catering for a particular sort of guest. There were 3 table lamps and a standard lamp with a combined wattage of about 40. There was no other lighting. This means it is impossible to read anything unless you are within one foot of a lamp. We were staying for a birthday party taking place in one of the hotel's many function rooms. Having left home a few days before, I wanted to iron my dress. An iron and board are provided. However the lighting was so poor I really couldn't see whether I was removing creases or adding them unless I carried the dress to the bathroom. As part of the refurbishment, the useful kettle had been replaced by a Bosch Tassimo coffee machine which makes 1 cup at a time. Instant coffee has been replaced by coffee pods and tea bags by English Breakfast tea pods. Used in the machine (and there's no other way to make tea) , these make a cup of tea so strong it looks like hot chocolate and tastes disgusting. The only way to get a normal cup is to throw most away and keep filling the reservoir and pressing the water button. Each cup of drinkable tea takes 10 minutes to make. Whoever came up with this idea should be sacked. Along with the pods we were provided with pods of creamer. These taste like - and probably are - sweet evaporated milk. We had to search for the towels which we eventually found rolled up in a drawer under the washbowl in the bathroom. The toiletries were minimal (one of each, no shower cap and no flannels) There was nowhere to hang the towels and there was very limited space around the washbowl for our wash bags or contents. After my shower (in a slippery bath) I wanted to use the hairdryer. It was almost impossible to stand in front of the mirror outside the bathroom and dry my hair as the flex is barely long enough to reach from the nearest socket. The morning after the party we had difficulty finding the dining room as it was poorly signposted. Breakfast was very good but didn't make up for the disappointment of the room. Some friends also staying there had un-renovated rooms which were light and bright and with a kettle. I suggest management spent a night in 103 and think a bit more about guests' expectations before renovating any more rooms.

    « lovely staff »

room was a little tired but great size and the bed was comfy, they are currently refurbishing at the moment. I look forward to coming back to see it when it is finished. Restaurant was very chic and swanky and the food was lovely, great choice on the Menu and well executed. The restaurant staff are a credit to the Hotel and the brand so very friendly an welcoming. Would recommend this hotel highly and would come again next time I'm visiting this area.

« Lovely hotel with a fabulous restaurant »

My husband and I visited last night using the groupon deal. The hotel is really nice and although we were in one of the rooms that hasn't yet been refurbished it was very comfortable and spacious. The restaurant was fabulous and we enjoyed a 3 course meal which was all really tasty. Breakfast was a buffet and the were plenty of choice. I would highly recommend this hotel and will definitely be visiting again.

    « Hotel being refurbished »

A dreadful experience. Rooms were being refurbished 8am-5pm close to mine. I experienced rudeness from the receptionist when I complained about the plastic keycard not working for the second consecutive day. The room was not clean: the only towels were much worn hand towels. The lighting was so poor that I had to ask for an extra lamp. A redeeming feature was the restaurant with a bright, friendly staff. However, the hotel caters for large groups, so if you want a quiet intimate atmosphere here, you may be unlucky.

« An overnight stay for my wife and I, given as a birthday gift. »

Extremely enjoyable stay in beautiful surroundings. The staff in all areas were very accommodating. The bedroom we were allocated had recently been refurbished and was beautifully decorated. A bottle of wine was served in our room shortly after arrival. The evening meal was absolutely superb and I asked for my compliments to be passed to the chef. The breakfast was also fantastic. Our stay was definitely very good value for money and we will certainly be visiting the hotel again.

    « Very nice hotel »

3 of us stayed 2 nights at this hotel last week and had a very enjoyable time. Couple of issues with the new menu but this was sorted and then the following night our food was luke warm but replaced quickly. We would just like to say that perhaps the portions are a little on the large side but the food quality was excellent. The hotel is going through a large refurb at the moment and you need to be aware of the unevenness on the road up to the hotel. The spa is great and all the staff very friendly. Would come here again. The only down side was the weather but we still enjoyed our stay and visited Beamish, Durham and Newcastle.

    « Wedding party - Un-accessible / Accessible toilet »

I was a guest at a wedding at this hotel on Saturday 15th October, I was very disappointed by disabled/accessible toilet used for the downstairs bar it was totally unsuitable for a wheelchair user. Despite the grand parents of the groom checking beforehand that there was an accessible toilet and being informed that there was it clearly did not meet the recommended standards.Further to the size and functionality of the in-accessible toilet the corridor along the approach to it was blocked by tables and chairs meaning that we had to use another entrance which was hindered by heavy doors this meant that the lady who needed to use the toilet facility could not do so without the assistance of family members. There was also no toilet paper and we had to get some from another toilet down the corridor. I have emailed Derwent Manor customer services before posting this review but no one has bothered to reply. Unfortunately this circumstance blighted what was otherwise a lovely family day.

Would like to thank ALL the staff, each and every one of yous have been very accommodating, Bottle of wine and prosecco in our room for my 50th birthday stay, rooms are lovely, spa area nice and clean, evening meal was delicious and hot, service was speedy and unintrusive, Breakfast was buffet style, lots of choice on continental section and cooked english was hot and plentiful, grounds are nice and clean, nice country views, was busy as a wedding was also taking place, but this didnt stop the high service we received. all staff were very friendly. would definitely stay again, and highly recommend others to visit,

    « Disappointed »

We have just returned from a couple of days here for our wedding anniversary, not a great first impression we were given the wrong directions to our room so had to return to the reception, and when we eventually found our room it turned out we had also been given the wrong key too. The food in the on site pub was lovley reasonably priced and large portions and the evening meal in the restaurant was nice too. Our room looked like it had been just refurbished and the following morning we had been for a walk and returned to the sound of drilling we couldn't hear the tv so decided we would go back out. Upon returning to our room we called in at reception to ask if the Wifi was back up and working and if the drilling had stopped. The receptionist assured us that it was quite quiet, I think she was referring to the drilling which had stopped but now they were hammering thankfully it didn't go on too long. We had a nice breakfast the following morning and left, I would like to say it was relaxing but unfortunately I can't.

    « Enjoyable stay »

The hotel is presently upgrading the bedrooms and whilst ours was an older room (Atholl suite) it didn't diminish our opinion of the hotel. We were shown one of the refurbished rooms and were very impressed with the design, colours and layout. We had booked two nights dinner, bed and breakfast. The food was very good and the service efficient. A special mention goes to Pippa in the restaurant who was most helpful and went out of her way to provide us with excellent service during a busy period one evening and again at breakfast on our second morning. We will definitely be going back to this well run hotel.

« It gets better every visit »

We always enjoy our visit to Derwent Manor - great location, wonderful facilities, friendly, helpful staff and delicious food. Each time we visit we discover another improvement. The refurbished rooms are wonderful. Spacious and decorated so well. The bathrooms are very high standard. We loved the coffee machine instead of the normal kettle hotels provide you with. We sleep so well. It's quiet and very comfortable. The new Italian restaurant is fantastic. It makes dining a special occasion. The bread served prior to the meal was real quality. The chicken dish was gorgeous and the cheesecake delightful. Breakfast was excellent. The second day we ate at lunch and dinner in the pub and again the food was fantastic. A simple plate of potato skins was superb. As always the meals are delicious and very ample. The staff are all so very friendly and helpful but we should mention Peter in the pub who went out of his way to ensure that we were well looked after. Despite a lot of work still being carried out on the building we were never once disturbed. Love the two new deers in the grounds. Thank you all very much and we will be back.

« Dog friendly, great room and small pool to boot! »

Stayed here with my girlfriend and her dog though a late booking site. Had a suit out back with a kitchenette (some cutlery missing but stuff for a brew) complete with a hob and a living room with an oddly placed tv. We used the hotel just for a nights sleep though there's a restaurant on site. There's a large bar and a great decking outside area. The pool and sauna was an added unexpected bonus. There's a nice farm track outback to walk fido on. Seems a good location for wedding parties but also if you want a dirty night away with the misses and dog (mud on the dog from walkies)!

We were not expecting such an upmarket refit, the restaurant very chic with a great menu, our bedrooms was 5 star.I am sure that when the restaurant is fully operational with the pizza oven on show that you will definatetly have to make sure you book a table as you arrive or even before. The bed rooms very quiet ours had wonderfull view over farmland and the Derwent valley.Good walks straight out of the hotel but get on OS map to get the best out of the area.

    « Lovely setting »

I stayed here on a business trip to attend training. The room used for the training delivery was very nice, but the adjoining sun room was alternately drafty and cold when windy, then baking when the sun came out. The hotel is undergoing refurbishment, and the work is being done to a high standard with beautiful wedding facilities. My room was older and yet to be refreshed, but was clean and comfortable. The restaurant is comfortable and food is excellent. All staff are welcoming and friendly. I would recommend this hotel for a short stay , and it must make for an amazing wedding venue.

So disappointing to pay the same price for a room yet to be refurbished, as the refurbished ones that are very much nicer, surely this should be offered on booking, when the hotel is under refurbishment?

    « Noisy wedding venue »

This hotel has had an awful lot of money spent on it. Cannot fault the location or the friendly staff. BUT on business I found myself having to cope with not one but two weddings. One noisy disco right above my bedroom. I gave them the benefit of a late night but when the racket continued beyond midnight I rang reception. Eventually the phone was answered by a surly night porter who gave me the good news that the racket will continue until 1am. Bloody wonderful. It's now 20 minutes after midnight and the whooping and shouting is in full swing. Doors are starting to bang and to be honest if I hadn't had a drink I would leave and go home. I was not told of the weddings when I booked and I find this completely unacceptable from a supposedly Best Western hotel. I will never return. Beware fellow travellers. Ask the question...is there a wedding?? If there is ...go elsewhere

    « Family Wedding »

Had a grat day and overnight stay for a family wedding . From arriving for the wedding celebrations to checking out the next morning we had no complaints at all . The wedding itself was well planned and coordinated by the hotel and all the staff were helpful and friendly . The room myself and my partner stayed in was very nice , clean and modern , The only thing that bothered us was we could'nt work the coffee maker but that was just a small issue . breakfast is buffett style and was nice . All in all agood stay

    « Disappointing »

We were booked into a classic double room but on arrival were put in a cottage room which was very small. It was really just big enough and would have made a lovely single room. Bathroom was very small with a corner shower cubicle, sink and toilet but no room to dry yourself after a shower. Was looking forward to break but left disappointed with the room. On the plus side the breakfast was very good and the evening meals were nice.

« Highly recommended on a cheap deal! »

This was our third stay at Derwent Manor - the first being in one of their self-catering cottages, and this being the second of two 'cheap' deals we've had with them, offering dinner, bed, breakfast and a bottle of wine for £90. On the whole we were very pleased with our stay here, with one or two minor niggles. As other reviewers have mentioned there is a lot of refurbishment work going on at this hotel at the moment. As such we were put in one of their 'cottage' rooms opposite the main building (we were in the main building last time) which we didn't rate as highly as our previous room. The room was modern and well-decorated but was overly hot during the night and was affected by noise from adjacent rooms (not that we had noisy neighbours, but the way the rooms are configured means it was very noticeable when they used the shower at 7 am) and we had some creaky floorboards in ours. Also the room had what is undoubtedly the smallest shower cubicle I've ever seen at a hotel - a tiny quadrant of a thing with very variable water temperature. They forgot our bottle of wine for the room too, though this was quickly resolved with a visit to reception. Food was excellent. We enjoyed it last time, but since then they appear to have moved eating upstairs into their new restaurant and it's got even better. For an inclusive three course meal there was lots of choice at each course, and we really couldn't fault anything. The pork loin and the pollo linguini with pesto were very tasty, with generous portions. Also have to mention the serving staff who were very friendly, helpful (some great dessert choice advice!) and efficient, a real credit to the place. Breakfast was in the same location - not a huge buffet but there is a reasonable choice and what was there was good quality. It's not perfect but we definitely couldn't knock it for value, and for what we paid the room niggles can be overlooked. I'd be tempted if we were doing it again to ask for a spot in the main hotel though.

« NOT DOG FRIENDLY - High Cost »

Hotel is in process of upgrading, Most public space have been completed and they are presently upgrading the rooms. I have stayed several times in the past but they are now charging £30 per night for having the dog in your room, I was staying in a non- upgraded room

« Great Groupon deal, lovely place »

I have just returned from a great Groupon deal, 89 for bed breakfast and 3 course evening meal. We arrived around 3 and went for a walk around the grounds before checking in and calling in for a drink at the traditional bar. good craic with the staff followed by a swim in the leisure facilities. Our deal meant we had a 3 course meal in the Guinevere restaurant , lovely food and ambience with a free bottle of red. the morning breakfast was great too. This was one of our best trips like this, and one we would happily repeat a visit to.

Excellent, went for my birthday with Grandchildren, there were six of us all told. Afternoon tea included in the deal. The swimming pool was great, and the evening meal also good, could not fault this at all

« Beautiful hotel with beautiful views! »

Stayed here as we were attending a wedding nearby. The hotel is in a beautiful location with fantastic views. The hotel itself is has a stone-built, rustic-farmhouse style, which perfectly matches the beautiful country scenery! The staff were very friendly and very accommodating. Although our rooms were a little small, they were clean, tidy and well presented. We drank in the hotel bar and as it was nice day, sat outside - which was very pleasant. Breakfast the following morning was what you would expect of a hotel buffet-style breakfast - there was a wide range of choice and the food was good quality. We wanted to use the facilities (pool and spa) after breakfast but this clashed with checking out, however the staff had no issues with this and were happy that we could keep the key to use the spa area once we were finished with our rooms. Would definitely recommend people stay here!

    « Disappointing.. »

As we know people use trip adviser to moan instead of complaining at checkout and this review is just that....( I did not complain at checkout as too many people were complaining and I didn't want to add to the situation, just wanted to leave the property..) Yes the location and buildings are nice, leisure facilities are good, but that's it really.. We stayed for a family wedding and I was happy with the day as a whole (some people were moaning about drinks being wrong or getting a single instead of a double.) food was good... Our room was not in the main building and I believe it had been updated....? The workmanship in the bathroom was amateur, shower was playing a game of scolding you or freezing you, shower door would not fully close so water all over the floor, tiling was terrible, electric cable hanging down over the mirror where a light should be..don't know if it was live (suppose I could of sprayed it with water to find out..?) but never the less looked terrible - If I was the manager I would not of signed off that workmanship and told them to rip it out and do it again..!! Our view out of window was of builders containers as far as the eye could see, which was very different to that described by others, hence I'm frustrated that I paid the full price for this room . Some of the staff were very friendly and almost made up for the fact that others had a distinct training need in terms of customer service and hospitality,or indeed ,did not care about the needs of their customers. I am a frequent traveller and do not feel it appropriate to repeatedly debate the level of customer care that should be afforded and in a venue which promotes itself as this one does. It is clearly going through refurbishment and this in some way may have contributed to some of the issues, but the apparent lack of organisation and structure made it impossible for some of the staff to carry out their roles effectively and has unfortunately ensured we would not stay at this venue again.

« British RedCross charity night. »

Had a charity event on the 23rd what a great night, food fantastic, staff lovely and friendly nothing was to much lovely venue ( grand hall my favourite ) would recommend. They bent over backwards to help thank you so so much. Everyone at the event had a great time said how fantastic it was. It's not the first time i have had charity events at the Derwent manner hotel and it won't be the last. Set in the perfect location to top all of this off. THERE GREAT THANK YOU.

    « Weekend in Consett »

The hotel was ok my only complaint was the bed not the best in the world. Creek and groaned when you sat on them and turned over in the night. The hotel is in a lovely setting and overall a good place to stay apart from the beds.

Came past on the off chance when we were looking for wedding venues, we fell in love with the place immediately and didnt bother wotht he rest of our list! « Lovely stay after a shaky start »

We booked an overnight stay here (dinner, bed and breakfast plus a bottle of wine in our room for £95) through Groupon. On arrival at the hotel, things were a bit hectic to say the least as the clear up to a Wedding Fair was taking place. We went to the bar to have something to eat while our room was being prepared. Had the biggest burger ever! Excellent value and very tasty. Our room was ready just after 3pm and to be honest we were a little disappointed and felt as if we were put in one of their not so good rooms due to having used the Groupon Voucher. The room was a little tired and the decor very dated. Plus, we had the disadvantage of being very close to 2 function rooms and our view was of the car park. We decided to go to reception to see if we could be moved and for an extra £25, we were put into one of the newly refurbished rooms which was lovely. Even better was the beautiful view from the window. Our wine ( a lovely dry French white) was waiting for us,nicely chilled in an ice bucket and we enjoyed a glass while we settled in. The room had everything we needed. The bed was HUGE with goose feather and down pillows. So, so comfortable. Dinner was at the Guinevere restaurant. Three courses were £22, but included in our package. We couldn't fault the food or the service. I had a pork loin steak which was delicious and hubby had the braised steak - so tender you could cut it with a spoon! Breakfast next morning was at the same restaurant. It was a self service breakfast, with all the usual full English breakfast ingredients plus cereals/fruit/pastries etc. Everything from the cooked breakfast area was lovely and hot and fresh. Unfortunately we then had to check out. This hotel is not perfect by any means - there is a huge ongoing renovation process which may not suit everyone and getting an older style room might not be so great if you like your decor a bit more modern. However, to a person, the staff are lovely and so helpful and work really hard to make your stay enjoyable. We would definitely visit again!

« ?Positive, beautiful. One night two day break? but feel cheated in the cost of the average room »

We were they for a wedding it was amazing the staff were all lovely the hotel its self is very nice clean and tidy the room where the wedding took place was very nice food was also very nice however I feel very disappointed at the room we were give for the price we paid the room was not good value for money there was rooms being updated at the some price as a very old and dated room very very disappointed feel I wasted my hard earned money.

    « Dated suite »

Stayed here overnight in a suite, it was like walking into my grandma's lounge really dated furnishings, big backed silver teles and a duvet that was a mass of lumps, both bathrooms dated too. That said the room was clean, we ate in the restaurant as part of a deal and the food was lovely and breakfast was great however the rooms in massive need of refurbishment as ours was like a throwback from 1980.

    « Fantastic staff »

After a stroll alongside Derwent Reservoir, we popped into this Best Western hotel for refreshments. The receptionist we met was a wonderfully nice young lady, who made us feel very welcomed. We were also greeted by a hospitable member of staff at the Grouse and Claret bar, where we sat to enjoy our drinks, before leaving to continue our journey home. I've had to rate the hotel, including sleep quality, for my review to be submitted, although my rating is for the staff at hotel reception and the Grouse and Claret bar.

    « Sunday lunch »

Recently went to Derwent manors newly refurbished restaurant for subway lunch. Choice of 1, 2 or 3 courses. We all went for the 3 course option which was well priced at £13.95. starter choice was served go table, with the main being a carvery or cod loin with help yourself vegetables. Dessert was a choice of Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle or chocolate gateau. The whole meal was excellent quality and very tasty. Excellent service not rushed or left waiting for courses. We can't wait to go back again.

« Our wedding! The best day ever! »

We had our wedding here on 30th July and it couldn't have been more perfect! Anita was our wedding coordinator and let me assure you she is amazing at what she does and she really does deserve a lot of credit. She made sure everything was perfect for us, even when I changed my mind about the colour of the seat covers the night before the wedding it wasn't even a slight problem for Anita. Our guests were looked after really well including those who had particular dietary needs and the sticky toffee pudding was amazing. Our reception room was so clean and tidy and decorated exactly how we wanted it, I really can't fault the staff at all they are so friendly and helpful. Thank you again Derwent Manor staff and especially Anita for making us feel so special on our big day, we will never forget it! Anita went the extra mile for us and we are eternally grateful. Thank you again! :)

    « Wedding »

Stayed here for a wedding in August 2016. Was not impressed with the food at all. Roast beef, very dry and full of gristle, gravy was like water. Could not eat it. The soup was tasteless. The central manor house is very nice, with its chandeliers and bar areas, etc. I stayed in the building opposite and was not impressed with the bathroom, that you could not swing a cat in had to squeeze into the shower and I am not a big person. The bedroom was also very small. I would never eat or stay here again. Too overpriced, for what it is. F

« The little details let it down »

I stayed in the Maple cottage for 2 nights. This is my experience of my stay: The initial impression is the hotel is lovely, well fitted out, a modern country affair. All set in a stunning area. Unfortunately, this impression soon changed. These were the problems with my stay: - The main grey door to the cottages slammed shut every time someone went in/out. The noise was so loud it made me jump! - The TV signal was very poor that most of the channels were unwatchable. - The shower unit was a bit too small which made it uncomfortable. Plus the temperature control was easy to turn hot, but stiff and almost impossible to turn cooler. - The room was very warm inside and there was a thick duvet on the bed. It was still very much summer outside so I never slept under the covers once as it was just too stifling. - The lighting in the room was too dark. I could barely see my face properly in the bathroom mirror to shave! - The shower tray did not drain fast enough (blocked plug hole?) so it quickly filled up. - In the bar, meal portions were too small in my opinion. A small cup of rice and a small bowl of curry (with some prawn crackers) was the extent of a £10 Thai green curry. It was lovely but quantity was not enough. - Bar prices for drinks were quite high too. Overall I do like this hotel as it's very picturesque and the views of the surrounding countryside are gorgeous! But the points above did spoil it for me on this particular visit.

« AVERAGE BUT BEWARE OF THE DRIVE »

I would rate this as an average hotel in an attractive setting, very convenient as a stop-off on the A68 on the way to Scotland. It's a little tired and would benefit from some TLC. The first impression: the long drive up to the hotel, is not at all impressive! The road is crumbling away on one side, alongside a deep ditch, the road humps are not marked and the roadway is in a general state of disrepair. I would be very concerned meeting an oncoming vehicle after dark because a drop into the ditch could cause serious damage! Beware.

    « Disappointing »

We stayed in this hotel in July. On the way up to it the drive way was terrible. The hotel looks idyllic. But our room was well lets say tired rundown. The beds were realy lumpy. The room wasnt clean the shower it was a dribble then all sudden it goes scolding hot which wasnt good when you have children. We had breakfast which to our disapointment wasn't nice my husband chipped his tooth on the bacon the pastry were stale. The coffee had bits in the every morning. I wouldnt recomend going with children as there is no were to eat only if you like macdonalds or kfc.

    « Good Location BUT.... »

Disappointing. On entering our allocated room it was clear that no attempt had been made to prepare the room for guests, used towels, cups, bedding and bottles being present.Thinking we might have been given this room in error we returned to reception where we had to wait eight minutes before the one and only person who allocates rooms was free to attend to us. We were then given the adjoining room which we were assured had been prepare. On entering the staff member noticed that it needed pillowcases so another wait for those to arrive only for the chamber maid to consider that the room needed to fully cleaned and new bedding etc before we could use it, she did an excellent job. Next day thinking our problems were over we were again disappointed when we returned at 1650 to find the room had not been serviced.Reception informed, a further wait then three ladies arrived to sort it out.. No anti-slip bath mat was provided, most unwise as a grab handle was not fitted. A mat was delivered very quickly, when the staff member was advised that other rooms were lacking mats he said if the GUESTS contacted reception they would be provided, not sure if that would please Health and Safety. Found it strange that reception would only issue one door key per room regardless of the number of guests in the room, inconvenient to say the least. The restaurant and service were very good with very generous portions. Good leisure facilities with free WiFi and parking. Would we return to this hotel, not in a hurry!!

« In many ways, very good »

We stayed at the hotel for 4 nights in a group of 30 . The staff are very pleasant and helpful. The hotel is attractive in location and very roomy, The bedroom was comfortable and large with all the facilities expected, but the bathroom suffers from a bath which older clients may find difficult and storage there is not good. Not all bathroom equipment is necessarily in first rate working order. The quality of the dinners and breakfast(wonderful sausages) were generally very good( dining room very nice), Nevertheless, service was a bit slow and on one night chicken portions were huge and the mixed fish very modest.Home made soup excellent.House French white wine very good On several occasions items were lacking on the tables..adequate number of glasses etc This could be a really good place if there was a little more attention to detail. Note that it is popular for weddings for which it is ideal Perhaps an "average" rating overall is a bit harsh.

« Family tea on a sunny night »

I am lucky to live within a mile of the Derwent Manor and I am pleased to say it's one of my favourite places to go on a warm sunny night ( or in the winter on a cold frosty night ) this has one of the most stunning locations with endless views of the surrounding country side .. We had both food & drinks and everything was perfect as always. We have also done New Year's Eve and Christmas Day lunch and I have to say no where compares to the service we received. As well as the hotel check out the little holiday cottages that are also available. These are truly stunning. A little hidden gem of a place that you have to visit .

    « A nice place to stay »

Stayed for 2 nights with work, the room I had was amazing, I was in Chestnut, not in the main hotel but i had a small lounge area, a small kitchen, and an on-suite bedroom. All was really well furnished and very comfortable, I would be more than happy to stay here again. The bar is nice and the food they serve is really nice. They have a swimming pool and gym which is nice and the WiFi is free and pretty good. I had a TV in my lounge which is nice. The only problem I have is that breakfast is £12, (thankfully work was paying) I can't understand how a place can charge so much for breakfast and i have worked in restaurants and kitchens when i was younger.

« Threadbare carpets and trashy chic improvements »

Very disappointed. The hotel is in a great location but has not had wise investment. Rooms and general hotel areas are very tired with threadbare carpets. The function rooms have been updated recently but with trashy chic glitzy furniture...probably costing more than good quality alternative options. The pool is relatively small with lots of money spent on a large gym and is all relatively new. Don't think that the priorities are right unless you want to just run a night club with tribute acts with a doss house attached for people to sleep it off and not caring what the décor is like!

    4
    « Family get together »

Stayed last night, originally booked for a tribute night to celebrate father in laws birthday however this was cancelled due to poor uptake. Catherine was amazingly helpful arranging three course dinner in the restaurant and an upgrade to newly refurbished rooms - can't thank her enough it made all the difference. The meal in the restaurant was fine, they ran out of a couple of items on the menu but the alternatives were fine. Service was excellent with good banter from Chris!! Nothing was too much trouble Had a lovely stay, only grumble being that we couldn't get any hot water from the shower, we were in room 123, not a big deal as we were only staying one night but just a bit irritating not being able to have a shower, reported it to reception so hopefully will be sorted for next guests!! We would definitely stay again, all in all its the fabulous staff that make the difference, can't fault the service or hospitality at all!! Looking forward to staying over for a family wedding in September!

Very pleased with my stay, I have been to this hotel twice, i must say I prefered my first stay as i was staying in one of there new modern decor rooms. The second stay i was put in a more old fashion vintage room. The Hotel itself is a very pleasant place to stay, Very quiet location, clean and very polite staff. Would hihly recomend staying there, Even more so in one of there modern rooms.

    « Best short break »

We arrived for a short break with our grandson and was warmly greated by Amy at reception. We were given our room key dinner reservations were made and just as we were to go to our room we noticed a travel cot being taken through reception. My wife asked if it was for our room to be to yes, we said we had asked for a Z bed as grandson no longer would sleep in a cot. Amy explained that they no longer used Z beds and found us a room with two large beds in the new wing. The service in the dinning room was great and nothing was too much trouble including staff looking after the needs of the young as well as a coach party. The only thing I would say is if you are going for breakfast go early as we found some of the cooked side to be dry if you came down late as it was being kept hot in warming trays. We later found out the reasons for this was some refurbihment going on. Other than this it a very nice place to stay with some of the most friendly staff I have come across in a long time, and I would not hessitate to recomend you stay and or to dine there if in the area

Karen Sinclair, bar manager(?)-What a star! Beautiful bar meals, served with friendliness and efficiency. We ate here every night of our stay, mostly due to Karen's professionalism. « Wonderful accommodation and food »

Just had the most fantastic meal in the newly refurbished restaurant. Our party had the beef, salmon and chicken. Superb quality meals, great service and a chic and stylish decor. Recommend without reservation. If you are looking for great cooking in a great setting look no further. The accommodation in one of the cottages is top notch. We had use of the pool and spa and was a quality experience. Fabulous- don't miss out.

« Best Western Derwent Manor Hotel »

The room was tired, dated, dirty and in need of a complete makeover, the shower went from freezing cold to hot so quickly it scolded one of my children, the staff if were present were at best vague, but certainly not helpful, and the breakfast was perhaps the worst I've ever had in a hotel. To finish the private road leading to the hotel was horrendous leading to damage to my wheel rim. In conclusion it was certainly not satisfactory and was very disappointed

    « pretty good »

One of the cottage rooms with a kitchen etc, did not expect that, but could be good for someone who wants to work in the area for a week or something. Good bed, quiet nights sleeps from 11:00 onwards. A little noise travelled from other rooms in the building but not after 11:00. Good evening meal and breakfast, good pool and gym too.

    « Not impressed!! »

Stayed here to attend a wedding and was not at all impressed with the room having paid £147 for 1 night I expected a lot more than a very old tired room with shabby old furniture, decor, curtains and carpets. The bathroom is also very old and shabby with a shower that has 1 temperature VERY HOT!! And is a slow trickle. Ended up having a bath as couldn't stand the heat of water. Will definitely not be returning, far too overpriced

    « Friendly and welcoming »

I recently stayed her with a coach party, so our all inclusive price embraced bed, breakfast and a set evening meal. I was impressed by the size of my room, which contained two king size beds, two armchairs, as well as the usual table and chest of drawers. There was an open wardrobe. I appreciated the quiet location, which meant, despite my room overlooking the car park, I could sleep uninterrupted with both windows wide open. The bathroom was pleasant and recently fitted out, though the shower mixer needed a little attention: it was very stiff to operate and did not maintain a constant temperature. This minor issue was not one I deemed worth raising with the management though no doubt it would have been immediately attended to had I done so. The modern flat screen television had a very large screen and was a pleasure to watch and operate. The breakfast, which was a self service buffet, was excellent: as well as cereals, fresh fruit, juices, toast, and delicious pastries the were scrambled eggs, bacon, mushrooms, hash browns, tomatoes, black pudding and baked beans....and as I preferred fried eggs to scrambled all I had to do was ask one of the ever present waitresses and the eggs were cooked to order. The evening meals were well laid out...always with white table linen and very attentive service. Ours was a special menu so I imagine the portions were much smaller than individual paying guests would have received, but generally the meals were good...there were one or two exceptions....a very thin gammon steak which was cooked for too long and was dry and tough....but this was very much the exception to the rule. My tour of the hotel revealed many very large public rooms which had not yet been fully commissioned: there is an impressive indoor swimming pool and gymnasium in a detached building, along with a full time attendant. It was clear that Derwent Manor is a hotel very much on the up, with minor construction work ongoing. I imagine that when everything has been completed prices will rise. I'd certainly have no hesitation in returning, though not as an individual guest paying the full £100 bed and breakfast price, especially since there is also a single person supplement. Finally, the friendly service from the staff was always accompanied by "sir" or "madam": one was made to feel very welcome and respected, which is not always the case nowadays.

    « Avoid wedding season »

The visit was made on a whim as we were heading elsewhere but stopped off here instead. We sat down and were advised by an angry chap not to order food as he had already waited 45 minutes. We had nothing better to do so ordered anyway and were kept entertained by a constant stream of wedding guests in posh frocks. The food came in 20 mins and was hot and tasty. The waitress apologised for the wait and gave us free drinks - very nice gesture even though we hadn't complained. The staff are young and inexperienced and it shows more concerned with the wedding parties than ordinary guests. However providing a separate area for wedding guests may help to keep ordinary guests happier and allow everyone there to be attended to equally swiftly. Special mention to barman Peter who did his utmost to help. Tip - go on a day that isn't so popular for weddings and you won't be disappointed.

    « Fizz Friday »

First time we've dined and stayed here, fizz Friday is a really good value for money, beautiful food, first class service, bedrooms very spacious but in the standard bedrooms the bath and shower are not too great, I found it a struggle to lye in bath and wash hair, breakfast great, grounds are lovely, would definitely stay again

    « Great break »

Stayed on a 2 night break and was upgraded to one of the superior double rooms which are very modern but not very practical which is why I have given 4 out of 5 instead of 5. However, the staff are lovely and really enjoyed the food. Would definitely go back.

    « A little R & R »

Just spent 2 nights in this lovely hotel set in stunning countryside. The staff are a delight. The food is excellent, especially the evening dinner, absolutely scrumptious. The leisure facilities are kept lovely and clean. The pool is a little small if there are a few people in, but we enjoyed our pre breakfast swim. We would definitely recommend it and would certainly go back again. Well done. ????????

    « Good Stay »

We stayed for 2 nights as we were going to visit Beamish Museum. The location was excellent for this only about 25 minutes away. There was so much to see that we will have to go back again and we will certainly book into Derwent manor again. We had a twin room that had 2 large double beds, and an extremely large TV. The setting is lovely set back from the road although the surface of the drive needs a lot of attention as it is full of potholes. We booked bed and breakfast and ate an evening meal in the bar. I agree that it was unusual to have scrambled egg on the buffet and you had to ask for either fried or poached egg. We had breakfast @ 8.15 approx and by that time the items were getting a bit lukewarm and dried up, but I have had a lot worse. The bar menu was varied and we ate here both nights. We had a burger accompanied by salad, chips, coleslaw and onion rings. The burger was lovely but I did find both nights that the chips were cold and the onion rings were very greasy.Next time I will try something else from what was a varied menu. The hotel is in the process of being done up and it appears to be getting done to a high standard. The chandeliers are amazing. We will definately come here again when visiting the area. Has leisure facilities but had no time to make use of these.

« The stay that never was! »

We didn't get a chance to like or dislike anything! We were due to arrive for a 2-day visit to this hotel on 18th August, for a family birthday celebration. But, the hotel phoned us on the afternoon of the 17th, to say there was "no room at the inn" (and it wasn't even Christmas time!). Apparently, there had been a booking muddle - we were last booked, so first turned away. There was an offer of alternative accommodation, but we were not impressed. However, we phoned Best Western, who were very helpful, and found us very comfortable accommodation at another Best Western hotel (New Kent, Jesmond, Newcastle), which welcomed us with a complimentary bottle of wine. So, we say: we thoroughly recommend the New Kent: it is a delightful place to stay; thank you to both the New Kent and Best Western; the Derwent Manor may be great hotel, but we never got the chance to find out; we might be able to do so, if they sort out their booking system - but would we want to risk it?!

Out on the 1000 mile trial. With several others we stayed here instead of Slaley Must have been in a newly renovated room. You sunk into pile of the carpet. Big big flat screen TVs, great bathroom and a proper modern cartridge coffee machine. Bar had choice of beers etc, normal hotel prices. Breakfast was good and plenty of choice. Didn't try the leisure facilities.

    « Derwent Manor »

Stayed here last week for a couple of nights. Hotel staff are very friendly, especially the restaurant staff who were excellent (Michelle in particular). We had a double room which turned out to be a double double room so we had a very comfy bed each. The room was very clean although the decoration & furniture was a little tired but there is a programme of redecoration going on. I've only given it 4 stars because the restaurant food isn't great. The rib eye steak just wasn't one (we received a refund for this as it charge at an extra #9) and the Morrocan lamb was fatty & over sweet. Even the waffle with berries & ice cream - surely nothing could be wrong with this? - was burnt underneath. The breakfast is a buffet arrangement which is great if you are staying over for business and need a quick getaway but for those of us on holiday a freshly cooked breakfast would be so much better. The manager (didn't see one whilst we were there) seriously needs to address the food situation if he/she wants to keep people coming back because, sad to say, we won't be returning any time soon.

    « Cyclists luxury »

For the fifth year running Derwent Manor has been our final stop on Coast-2-Coast cycle route. Twenty tired cyclists having just completed the leg from Alston via Rookhope were not disappointed by the usual warm greeting from the staff. Everyone enjoyed the leisure facilities, the very comfortable refurburished rooms and a fabulous meal in the ballroom. Not all places look forward to serving a party of twenty made up with eleven year olds but great credit goes to the manager and staff with their outstanding treatment of the group, by the way the food was excellent from a very appealing menu that had an excellent range of choice. Breakfast after a relaxing nights sleep in very comfortable beds was super with something for all tastes and diets. Once again thanks to the staff for making this an excellent experience for our young cyclists.

    « Over priced »

Over priced bar, staff relatively pleasant, some staff seemed more concerned with mucking about than doing there job. Draught lager tasted horrid so I stuck to expensive bottles instead. Spirits were also astronomically priced. The family members wedding who we were attending said the rooms were ok but nothing fantastic

« Last minute overnight stay »

Stayed at the hotel for 1 night on a Dinner, bed & breakfast offer. The room was beautiful, the leisure facilities were great and the food was amazing, we opted for Ribeye steak which was cooked to perfection and the breakfast was out of this world. I would highly recommend a visit.

« Needs refreshing but very comfortable »

The lovely staff definitely make this hotel. The bedrooms are large and the furniture needs updating, but they are comfortable, and I believe a refurbishment programme is under way - the carpets in reception and the bedroom definitely need replacing. The food was excellent, though, as in many hotels, the drinks are a bit pricey.

    « Looked good outside »

The staff were great the rooms looked good on first entering a room but the finish seems to have been done on a shoestring and things were falling apart. The beds were extremely comfortable. The lighting in the rooms was poor even though there were plenty of lamps. could not adjust the heating and the beds were not made up properly each day.

« Concenient location in an old manor house »

Derwent Manor is located up a hill from the A68, and provides a comfortable and convenient place to stay prior to traveling Hadrian's Wall. It is a large place and there is ample and convenient parking. The bar is comfortable and the food quite good. Our room was large and comfortable, though a bit difficult to get to (two short sets of stairs and several swinging doors - the place is something of a rabbit warren, which can be both charming and troublesome. WiFi was via a service provided by British Telecom which in my experience was difficult to use and ultimately useless - e.g., most secure internet sites, such as email, would refuse connection.

« Woodlice, Cold Shower and Rubber Bacon. »

I have been to this place twice now on business and it is the most convenient for its location. However, twice I have been frustrated, the first time with a lukewarm and weak shower in the morning and an intermittent wi-fi signal in the room. The second which was overnight on 04/07/2016 after a long journey from Bristol I arrived at 12.30am and was promptly handed the keys to a Suite. I was initially very pleased, however, the TV's were not plugged in and I had to re-tune the digibox placed on top of a television from the early 1990's. Other small niggles about the welcome was that the light was left on in the shower room, and the extractor fan was very loud. In the morning I waited 20 minutes for the shower to heat up, and ultimately it did not, so I could not have a shower. Whilst waiting for the shower I noticed that woodlice were running freely in the shower room, not an infestation but enough to make me wonder. Breakfast was o.k. but not great, the bacon was cooked to a char and the coffee was weak (filter coffee) o.k if you like it that way. I have left comments at reception and the receptionist was very apologetic, helpful and clearly embarrassed. But I do wonder about the cleanliness of the hotel and the facilities. It's in dire need of investment as it is a quite beautiful building and has masses of potential, shame it's not being managed like that.

Good hotel, beautiful surroundings. Staff were all very helpful and welcoming. Good quality breakfast, the one evening meal we had was also very good. Our room was very clean and comfortable but a bit tired. But not a problem as we didn't go to sit in the room. Internet was very patchy and didn't work some days in our room but could be accessed in the bar.

Fantastic Hotel with Amazing staff!! We had our Wedding at the Hotel in June and cannot thank the hotel and all the staff enough. From turning up the day before to leaving a couple of days later everything was PERFECT! We and our guests had the pleasure of staying in the newly refurbished rooms which are luxurious and decadent to say the least, and the Bridal Suite is gorgeous!! The food from breakfast to dinner was delicious and the Grand Hall is a stunning setting for any occasion, coupled with the beautiful surrounding countryside you cannot ask for a better combination! We will return in the future i'm sure for many visits!

« Great location, stylish hotel & friendly staff. »

The bad state of repair of the entrance drive gave a poor first impression but this was soon forgotten on arrival in the car park and first view of the hotel. Not nearly as old as its designed to look but done tastefully and I liked it a lot. The food in both the restaurant and bar is well above average and the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff was outstanding. The housekeeping staff in particular, couldn't do enough to help you. The function rooms were lovely and the bar area is extremely cosy, I will certainly come back again.

    « Payment/Staff »

I arrived at the hotel around 1:30pm on Saturday as part of a wedding party, we were guided to a room where the reception was being held to wait for the bride and groom. After a welcome drink I headed to reception to check in and pay for our room. I paid cash (£147) for the room and continued with my day. The next morning when checking out the girl on reception said the room needs paying for to which I advised I had paid for it the day before in cash. The girl then continued to say no it hasn't and said her system shows no payment. After 5 minutes of explaining the situation the girl said she would get a manager, I waited in reception for a further 5 minutes before the girl said the manager couldn't come and said she would take my details and call me within 24 hours. I am annoyed the girls didn't offer a solution (checking cctv etc...) and kept saying I haven't paid, also I still haven't had a call 4 days later and was told they would bill the card left for the room which isn't even my card and was someone else staying with me who had cleared a bar tab.

« Another great Best Western »

A lovely characterful hotel in a beautiful setting. The swimming pool is a bonus, especially as you can watch the wildlife as you swim. The twin room was spacious and contained two double beds, so felt luxurious. The bar furniture needs recovering in places, but it is clear that a programme of renovation is ongoing. We really enjoyed our stay again, and wished it could have been longer.

« Brilliant Service, Friendly & Polite Staff, Great Quality »

We only stayed for 2 nights but after the first night we wanted to extend our stay. It was very clean & tidy, the breakfast is excellent, its help yourself but theirs everything their you should want. The pool is lovely & warm, it also has a hot tub & sauna which are very relaxing, the hotel itself is like a castle & we was made to feel very welcome & the staff were their to help with whatever we required, 24 hours a day. Its close to where we needed & we would defiantly stay again.

« Friendly staff, good food. »

Derwent Manor is undergoing quite a lot of refurbishment which means the stylists have been let loose in various areas. Room 108 features dog turd brown wherever possible and this with no ceiling lights and only three very small reading light bulbs, it is like living at the bottom of a crypt. Reading in bed is impossible and so, apparently, is providing a reading light that could be plugged into the plentiful supply of sockets. "Not technically possible" we were told. Otherwise the hotel is fine. The food is definitely above average and the staff are all friendly and very helpful (apart from finding reading lights). Our cleaning lady said we should have mentioned it to her - she knew of lots and could have plugged one in. On our visit dining was taking place in the main ballroom which meant the atmosphere was a little like eating in the middle of Grand Central railway station. Apparently diners are being moved around as the refurbishment takes place. Breakfast is normally served individually which is excellent, and the quality is good although someone finds it necessary to fold every slice of bacon in half before cooking it. The approach drive is a disgrace with potholes bumps and lumps likely to catch out the unwary. In one place it is possible to drop a wheel off the edge with disastrous consequences. Wifi is excellent and very fast.

Great location for visiting the many attractions, sites and walks in the area. The room could do with modernisation but the bed was very comfortable. All the staff were very pleasant and accommodating- a great asset to the hotel. Food was good. Definite say again on next visit to the area

    « Great service »

I booked a last minute offer to stay overnight with my Mother as a little treat we have been on other occasions and was not disappointed .Upon arrival we were given tea and a scone with jam and cream whilst waiting for our room ( we were early), after going to our recently refurbished beautiful. We had a slight problem which was dealt with very efficiently by Hannah the receptionist we spent a wonderful afternoon relaxing in the lesiure facilities .the three course dinner that evening was faultless and the service was brilliant the complimentary wine went down a treat .Previously the breakfast was a buffet style but has changed to cook to order which in my opinion was much better .lovely friendly staff (Christine at the pool, dining staff ) .excellent value for money ,we will be back !!!!

« Have visited several times »

Visited this hotel around five times over the years as we visit relatives living close by. Always pretty good, service, breakfast, comfort, etc. Pleasing to see a lot of refurbishment going on or completed in some public rooms and bedrooms as it has got to be said that the hotel was getting a bit tired looking. Nice location for visiting the splendid local countryside.

    « Perfect for us »

We wanted a base for 3 nights to visit the area and chose the Derwent Manor for it's location. It is beautifully situated with 360 degree views well away from the main road. Bearing in mind it's a Best Western, not a 5 star hotel, we were very happy with our choice. As has been written elsewhere the hotel is currently being refurbished and we were in an unfurbished room but that was no hardship. It was huge and had everything we wanted. You can choose dinner in the bar or separate dining room. We tried both and found the bar menu 'stodgy' but the £22/head 3 course menu in the restaurant was good for the price. Our only grumble was the cheeseboard (for which there is a supplement) which was chilled to oblivion. It has no place on a menu let alone attracting a supplement. The staff were all very friendly and added to the enjoyment of our stay. Our three night B & B charge was £189 which was excellent value for money. The decor is dark wood which can be a little oppressive but nevertheless we would happily stay there again and we have expectation of a refurbished room to look forward to.

Our favourite local place for Sunday lunch. Always great service and the best home cooked food in our local area. Staff are always very welcoming and the food itself is delicious. Although the restaurant is currently being renovated I believe we had lunch in the bar area which was just as nice. Well worth a visit

« Great room; good food, excellent value, friendly and helpful staff »

We stayed as our launch site for doing the Coast 2 Coast cycle ride. The room was enormous but builders were refurbishing the room underneath - no problem apart from the fact that they turned up at 7am shouting down their mobile phones (which they seemed to do all day!) We weren't planning an early start unfortunately. The food was excellent (6 ribeye steaks for our party). The room was great and excellent value for money. The staff couldn't have been more helpful; we had a lot of challenges and they really couldn't be bettered.

    « Wow! What a Refirb! »

Stayed here for one night and the room and service was fabulous. They are doing a Refirb and the quality level is excellent. Service from the staff was excellent and they did everything possible to make the stay enjoyable. Hannah on reception was a pleasure to deal with and really looked after us. The pool and spa area was great and in a lovely setting. Thank you again.

« Super family stay - great facilities - super friendly service - great location. »

We booked this hotel as the previous reviews were good and it was near several attractions that we wanted to visit as a family during half term. The added bonus was that the hotel had a swimming pool on site!! The room was excellent - it had just been upgraded over the last few weeks with huge wall mounted TV screen and a Bosch tea and coffee making machine. The hotel staff are extremely friendly and it was great to stay somewhere with local people working there!! We stayed on a bed breakfast and evening meal basis. It was superb value and the quality of the food served was outstanding. The car park is free and towels are provided at the pool. The setting is rural and we had fantastic views out of our bedroom window over the fields and local farms. The bar area is very relaxed and the prices very reasonable. We saw several people eating in there although we ate in the main restaurant. We would certainly recommend this hotel to family and friends as we have had a very enjoyable and relaxed two day break.

    « Coach Holiday 4 night stay »

Good location for touring some of Northumberlands areas of outstanding natural beauty, hotel clean comfortable staff excellent food very good considering we were part of a group. Some rooms a little dated but a refurbishment program under way restaurant also under refurbishment so using ball room which has been done to a very high standard beautiful chandelier. Has a very good pub type bar prices reasonable you would use this as your access if you were disabled to gain entry to your room as the rest of the hotel although having a lift does have a few stairs to negotiate. Our room was large and ok did have a problem with toilet but soon fixed water from shower could have been more powerful and hotter but did suffice good large television, saw some of the refurbished rooms and they were of a high standard. On the whole an excellent stay and no complaints from other members of the group and would use it again.

    « Lovely short break »

We recently spent 3 nights at Derwent Manor, check in was quick and efficient and we found all the staff to be very friendly and helpful. Our room was a good size with plenty of storage space and the bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed using the leisure facilities, especially the pool and jacuzzi though my husband did venture into the gym on a couple of days! We stayed on a dinner, bed and breakfast deal and the food was excellent though the menu was the same on 2 nights which was a bit disappointing. Breakfast was cooked to order apart from one morning when a coach trip was at the hotel when it was a buffet. Only criticism was the building work taking place in a room close by when the builders started work at 7.45!

    « A Week's Stay »

The hotel is in a very rural location which was great as it was peaceful and quiet. Check in was quick and efficient and we felt welcome. The room itself was large and had two double beds which were comfortable. Although there is a lift there were still a lot of stairs to get to our room which was a little difficult for my elderly mother. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Overall we enjoyed our stay but the one thing which spoiled it was the lack of variety in the menu for dinner. The food itself was very good and there were six choices of starters, main courses and desserts. The problem was that main courses in particular did not change at all during the week and as I only liked, or could eat three, it made for a rather lack lustre dining experience. Also there was only one vegetarian option for the whole week so any vegetarian would have had to have the same each night.

    « Lovely short break »

We recently had a lovely short break at Derwent Manor. Apart from the receptionist who wasn't very friendly or helpful this didn't spoil our enjoyment too much. We'd like to thank and mention some wonderful staff who really helped to make our stay special. These were Chris, he was so friendly and funny. Also Gwen and Anita, 2 lovely warm, welcoming and very helpful ladies. The food and accommodation were lovely too.

    « One night stay »

Easy to find entrance well signed and on the A68. Check in very friendly and efficient. Room good size large flat screen TV. Bedding and towels all clean and fresh. There is a pool and gym in a separate building on the grounds at the top of the car park which is well equipped and clean. Open at 7.00am. I ate my evening meal in the bar from the bar menu. I had the classic burger with cheese and bacon, it comes with fries battered onion rings side salad and coleslaw for £11.95. A pint of fosters was reasonable at £3.55. As I was not in a hurry in the morning I came down for breakfast at 8.15am, (breakfast is served from 7.00am). It was a buffet set up and the cooked elements were getting a bit dried up and lukewarm. Checkout was a pleasureable experience.

    « A lovely stay »

clean, comfortable, friendly staff, lovely position handy for Durham etc. Need to book for the restaurant we made the mistake of not doing so on our third night and because there was a wedding fair on the restaurant was in part of the bar so limited tables. The food on the two nights we ate in was excellent.

« LOVELY LUNCH DESPITE THE DISABLED DEBACLE »

Booked here again for Sunday lunch having had a lovely meal a few weeks earlier. We made it clear that one of our party is wheelchair bound and this was no problem as the access is good and there is a lift up to the restaurant where Sunday lunch is served. So up we went to find that the restaurant had been moved to another room this time which was up a flight of stairs and hence no access for us! What was really annoying was that they had our telephone number and could easily have informed us of this but didn't bother. As it was too late to go anywhere else we were told we could have it in the bar area which we did. Although it is a carvery main course, the starters and desserts are beautifully presented and the carvery itself is better than most I have experienced. The staff worked hard to try and make up for somebody else's mistake and all the vegetables were brought down in dishes. The only problem was that by the time all the food arrived from upstairs it was only luke warm. We did get a free round of drinks on the house to say sorry and the place is lovely and is still on my list of places to return. This would have been a 5 star review otherwise. This sort of mistake is avoidable and shouldn't happen.

« enjoyable night though overpriced »

we booked a night at this hotel at short notice so only had the option of a suite but on reading the description were happy to book it. we were greeted by a very friendly and efficient lady on reception. the hotel is currently going through a major refurbishment which is greatly needed as it does look tired and dated. we had loads of space in the suite with a very comfortable bed and with a separate sitting room. it had lovely views from the balcony unfortunately there was no outside furniture on the balcony so if you want to sit and enjoy the view you had to take the chairs from the bed room out side. although there was plenty of space the room was somewhat shabby and tired looking and we felt for the price the little things had been neglected. I think if you pay over £200 per night you want things to be perfect which they weren't. the toilet seat didn't fit, the bath panel didn't fit, there was a damp patch on the ceiling a large mark on the carpet where some one had attempted to clean a spillage. a whole in the wall from the door I know it sounds picky but the lamp shades didn't match. I realise that the room hadn't been updated but feel it was way overpriced in comparison to the room which had. I would stay again as we did enjoy it and they staff were very friendly and efficient especially the waiter in the restaurant on the saturday night ( i think his name was dave), but will wait until all the rooms have been updated.

    « Another repeat Visit »

I have stayed here on several occasions in the past, and each time I come there are a few more improvements, as the Hotel goes through a improvement programme. My room this time on the first floor was a good sized room, with two Double beds and a Large flat screen TV. The main restaurant was closed but the Grand Hall was being used for breakfast, it had a huge feature chandelier. The Pub Style Bar the Grouse and Claret was serving meals and was quiet busy, there was a good range on the menu. I had the steak and Ale pie and it was very good. Thanks to Hannah who rescued my car keys which I left on reception when I booked in and did not realise were missing till the following morning.

    « "Fantastic Staff" »

I stayed at this hotel overnight 10th-11th May 2016 with my club there were about 48 of us, we were received with such a welcome tea and coffee. The rooms were perfect beautiful views. The meals were lovely and the staff could not have done any more for you nothing was too much trouble. They are now going to accept wedding's there the great hall has such grand chandeliers hanging from the ceilings and also very effective wall lighting. We stayed there as we were visiting Harrogate and Beamish, you do need to have transport though as it is out in the country. I would recomend this hotel and would go again.

    « Nephews wedding »

Me and the wife have just spent 2 nights for a family wedding at this hotel. We were in the newly refurbished rooms and were really impressed by the standard. The bar food is a reasonable price and a good portion, i had steak and ale pie with mash and veg, well worth £10. The breakfast in the main hall was excellent and can highly recommend it, plenty to choose from. The beer and drinks were reasonable for an hotel and the day of the wedding went by so quick with a great service, lovely meal with a great bash at the night time. The grounds and scenery were great and the pool and sauna looked good even though we never used them. The staff were also very friendly and helpful . All in all A GREAT STAY

« Looked lovely, helpful staff, but let down by the cooking »

When we booked into our room ,the first thing we found was that the window frame had been broken and the window catches ripped off by someone trying to force it shut. The staff gave us another room for the night while it was fixed. Whilst the staff were all polite and very helpful, Each day started with a disappointment as we were unable to get properly browned toast without putting the bread through twice , I found the meats were overcooked and dry. So I gave up on having the English breakfast and the evening meal main course for the rest of our stay.

« Rooms in need of some tlc »

I stayed here overnight this week in room 242 the rooms are very dated however have a shinny new 50 inch tv in them I feel the money would be better spent doing some urgent repairs to the room. A few things to note: The plug in electric heater in the room is unsafe with its legs missing this is a fire waiting to happen it also hasn't been pat tested since 2010. The toilet seat has the plastic wood effect missing meaning it is now pourus and will be full of germs. The ironing board is rickety and was likely to drop at any minute. The bed itself had a long black hair in it! Being a bald fair male travelling alone it wasn't mine! The front of house facilities were spot on obviously this part of the hotel had been refurbished in the not to distant past. Food was ok. Would I stay here again? No!

    « What a find!! »

We booked a night away last Friday with 4 of our friends, Evening Meal & B&B. Reception staff greeting was great and instructions delivered impeccably. Found our room and although slightly dated (all being refurbished) we were impressed with the size and amenities in the room. Bed extremely comfortable. Met our friends for dinner and quickly shown to our table - food and drinks were excellent - no complaints at all and the service was fantastic. great staff, charming, helpful and great sense of humour from all of them, really made our evening. Breakfast, again superb, quality food cooked perfectly and plenty of toast, cereals, fruit, Yoghurts etc. Overall a brilliant catch up with friends in great surroundings and great staff. Didn't use the swimming pool but will on our return visit. Had a look around the hotel before we left and what an amazing venue for weddings, have a look if you are getting married.

    « 2 day course. 1 night stay »

Lovely looking hotel from the outside with a mix of old main building with new ones too. Here for a 2 day business course and stayed in The Derwent 3 room. Huge U shaped bedroom with 2 double beds. Nice snd clean but with some dated furniture and old style wall lights. It was almost as if it was an old Attic. Huge bathroom with a bath and shower. However, it was a tad spooky for me!!!!! Now i don't believe all that but........ I leave it up to you. Great food and all staff were very courteous and polite. Would stay again but in a little less spooky room LOL

« Terrible Weather but Great Hotel! »

My wife and I have just returned from a five day stay at The Derwent Manor and must say everything about this Hotel and especially its staff was superb. Great rooms (And yes we saw several), great ambience, wonderful facilities, great location for so much of County Durham and such as Weardale and Hadrians Wall etc, and incidentally super lounge facilities should the weather be bad, as indeed it was for us. In short we have stayed in MANY hotels Worldwide, but few in the UK have been as good or as friendly as this.

Stayed for one night with my partner for his birthday. What a brilliant place this is. All the staff here are extremely helpful and pleasant and really go that extra mile to make you enjoy your stay. We were upgraded to one of the cottages and it was a beautifully decorated comfortable stay. We ate in the bar for lunch and upstairs for our evening meal, both delicious, very comfortable surroundings. This is definitely my new favourite place to stay and great value for money.

    « Relaxing short break »

We arrived before our check in time and advised that although our room wasn't ready we could make use of the bar, spa or the gym which we thought was very nice to be offered, the reception staff were helpful and friendly. Our room was large spacious clean and comfortable the bathroom was a bit dated but it was lovely have a bath to relax in although the shower wasn't very efficient! We stayed for two nights and ate each evening in the bar the food and service were excellent food was freshly cooked to order, breakfast was buffet style in the dining room although the second morning it was served in the bar area due to the dining room being set up for a wedding. I cannot fault anything about our stay and cannot wait to go back back again.

    « Such a let down »

Booked a last minute deal for Easter Sunday of dinner bed and breakfast + bottle of wine at £89 it seemed such a good offer - the hotel is charming looking and set in countryside with plenty of onsite parking. We arrived early so decided to have some drinks and bar snack which was fine and we had good service from a very friendly lady behind the bar - check in was quick and we were given a room in a building across the car park - recently refurbished with new carpets and decor the room on first look seemed fine but spending some time in the room it became apparent it was not up to standard the shower room was very small with tiny basin and shower cubicle but it could easily have been larger, it already it had a broken shower door, there was a large wardrobe with only two hangers one was broken ( one questions the need for such a large wardrobe with such a small shower room ) back in the bedroom a large mirror with socket under but had no lighting or shelf to put things on (very poorly thought out) - no light switch by bed to turn main light off - one plus side the bed was very comfy. The evening meal turned into a very uncomfortable experience as the kitchen had a nightmare service and you had to feel for the serving on staff who took the brunt of guests complaints ( issues ranged from taking a long time for food to come out ,cold food, items missing, average quality food) serving on staff admitted the kitchen had struggled all day which impacted on them - so I felt that at least they can redeem themselves with breakfast but it ended up worse (the buffet style breakfast was not good at all with items not replenished quickly enough or not at all, staff just brought out cheap cartoons of juice to fill up the jugs and bread was just tipped out into basket with no care for appearance and another loaf was left on the side for us all to see it was a cheap buy. The serving on staff were different from the evening staff and it showed they seemed to have no idea on how to work effectively (it was shambolic and it was our last impression of the hotel or nearly because as we were leaving the room the cleaners were hovering outside waiting for us to go ( not good) On the plus side most of the staff were friendly and the leisure facilities were ok. Yes we had an offer deal but if the hotel cannot get the basics right they should not bother and just make sure the full paying guest have a great experience

Fantastic food and atmosphere. My husband and I stayed for a weekend break Staff are a lovely and very helpful especially Michelle and Karen who were amazing thank you ladies was a pleasure to meet you both. Would stay again without hesitation especially now we know that the hotel is being refurbished as that was our comment that the bedroom was in need updating but very clean and comfortable. Now they are being updated that will be the icing on the cake!!

Myself and my children took my wife here for her birthday, from driving up to the building it's truly breathtaking. We stayed in a cottage which was beautiful and very well equipped. The children ate in the bar which was lovely and us in the restaurant, beautiful food, great service and super staff. This was a flawless stay and I highly recommend to everyone, next time I intend on using the leisure facilities which looked great too.

    « What a surprise! »

We were staying over for a 50th birthday celebration, and the reception staff were very welcoming and even gave us a choice of rooms. The hotel is going through a major revamp which is giving the hotel a fantastic contemporary feel with soft neutral colours from the brown grey silver palette. The new carpets through out are amazing! It is work in progress but this did not effect the areas of the party. We had drinks and lunch in the bar which is on the list for refurbishing but with the fire going was very cosy. Food was lovely with a good bar menu from soup, salad and sanwiches to pasta, curry, and lite bites. The evening function seemed flawless with plenty staff on hand. The bar was open for residents till we left at 2.30am and once again nothing seemed to be too much trouble. We have stayed at the hotel in the past and thought the rooms were seriously in need of refurbishment with dated decor, soft furnishings and cold rooms. With this in mind we opted for one of the refurbished rooms. The only ones finished were the annex across the court yard (20 second walk). Although we were advised these were smaller double rooms they were done beautifully, with modern en-suite shower. Toiletries only one shampoo and one shower gel for a double room I think should be at least two, to save ringing for extras. The space was limited and had only a console table with a flat screen tv above where there should be a dressing table/desk, no room for a chair. I did have a little work with me which was completed sitting on the bed, wifi free and very good reception considering we were in the middle of the counrtyside. No mirror full length or mirror in the room, I used the bathroom cabinet mirror for drying hair and applying make-up, which the lighting wasn't very good resulting in standing at the window to do my make-up. Hanging space only with no shelf for smaller/folded items so they remained in my suite case. No room phone so I had to ring reception using my mobile which wasn't a problem till we realised we had no charger with us so mobile for the following day! Breakfast was served in the bar area with self service hot and cold laid out in the corridor outside, I would imagine once all the restaurant areas were up and running this may change. Breakfast was average, with only one choice of eggs so if scrambled (and I don't think fresh eggs but cartoned) isn't your choice on a weekend break tough!

« Great hotel stay, yet again »

I was staying here midweek on business recently, and I come here 2 - 3 times per year, and it never lets me down. The checking in process is swift and all the staff are great, very friendly. As it was Easter Holidays it was quite busy so I had to book a family room (242) it was great, immaculate and it had a great view (Check out the photo!) as well as a 50 inch flatscreen, brilliant if I had the kids with me and it was raining! I had a burger in the bar which was very tasty and reasonably priced, breakfast was great also, and everywhere is clean and tidy. I didn't visit the pool this time but the hotel have added an outdoor seating area which is a nice touch, as well as the electric car charging points outside reception, which weren't here when I came last time. The one thing they need to address is that the shower water pressure is poor, but when I mentioned this to the receptionist when I checked out she did say this is being addressed during the coming year. Also, the approach road could also do with a bit of TLC, but other than that I would definitely recommend this hotel for business and families alike, the location is beautiful.

Hi, just spent a full day and night attending a friends wedding at the Best Western Derwent Manor Hotel on 9th April 2016 Check-in at reception was fast efficient & staff were really friendly, our room was made ready for us early to allow us to freshen up & get ready for the afternoon wedding, room was immaculate all amenities were there we had a lovely view overlooking the countryside no complaints at all Bar staff were quick friendly & prices were more than reasonable in my opinion, hotel was exceptionally clean throughout the corridors & bar area along with beer garden were really nice & relaxing Main hall for wedding was really smart with registrar & staff smart efficient & professional, meal was outstanding along with the service Evening reception was once again in the main hall with tables decorated & disco, evening buffet was one of the best I have ever seen with as wide a range of choice as anyone could require Breakfast in the morning was once again superb ( apart from the toaster had broken which was no big deal) All of this put together made for a really enjoyable stay for me and the wife & I would not hesitate in recommending this hotel to others Thanks for a great weekend Best Western Derwent Manor.....

Hotel quite easy to find but out of town not the most picturesque building but deceptive once inside, much larger than appears, the room we had was very large compared to some hotels but suffered from the "English shower" a mere dribble.Beds etc very good, food in the bar area good but did not try the main dining room. The clear night sky amazing.

« Lovely setting and a great room »

We booked through Great Little Breaks for a mini getaway and wasn't disappointed on arrival. The hotel was beautiful and the room (236) had two huge double beds in a huge room. The reception staff were brilliant, as were the restaurant staff on the first night. The four stars are given as the service at breakfast and on the 2nd night wasn't as good, don't like to be asked if I want tea or coffee or the full breakfast prior to being seated. Little things could have elevated this to a 5 rating; ensuring the continental buffet was fresh, letting you sit and enjoy a cuppa prior to ordering breakfast, bringing out the fruit juice in jugs to refill the dispenser rather than the cartons, same with the bread, no-one wants to see they'll be eating budget bread! The other was the breakfast staff asking you a question such as, " what are you planning to do today" then walking off before you answer. If you're just being polite, then don't bother or stand and listen. Overall though a great setting with easy access to a number of sights.

Had stayed there a couple of years ago and it has improved further in that time. It looked like the restaurant has been recently refurbished to a high standard. The chandelier is especially impressive. Food was well cooked and nicely presented. Large TV in the room with good quality picture.

Set in the countryside, with easy access by road. Great that you can take a dog (extra charge) and have plenty of space to walk the dog in the grounds, Warm greeting from the reception staff, backed up by very friendly staff throughout. Good size rooms and wifi available at the venue. Food quality was good with excellent choice at breakfast. I would stay again.

Booked in for 1 night for nearby wedding asked for early check-in staff said they would try, we arrived at 12.00 to be told 10mins for our room great, staff were nice and friendly from the off. went to out room and it was basic but clean and a good size with 2 large singles, a good size TV plenty storage space and cloths hangers. checked the bathroom again good size and a jacuzzi bath nice touch complimentry shampoos as well' Got readyand went for a drink while waiting for a taxi 12.30 on a Sunday it was quiet, but carvery was just starting and the food was smelling good sadly not eating there. came back at about 8.00pm again a drink was needed this time quite busy like all hotels about £3.75 a pint and £5.00 a glass of wine then bed-time. Breakfast was at 8.00 on Sun and Bank hols so off we went and a good selection was available from juices /cereal and full English really tasty and the dinning room was a big old banquitting hall very nice and roomy not elbow to elbow. after breakfast decided to check out the health suite, a pool/ jacuzzie/ sauna on the ground floor and gym upstairs not a big suite but all in all OK again friendly staff then check-out all quick and easy. did speak to a couple who had a bad experiance but all in all we had a good stay and would not hesitate to return dont expect too much its basic but friendly and clean.

I know I'm slightly late on this review but I thought I'd write it now before my next stay in April, the room was perfectly sized with good facilities, the hotel itself has the most amazing setting which. The breakfast was gorgeous and the staff are very friendly and polite. One girl stood out and went above and beyond and it was a girl on reception called Jenny! Wonderful young lady very polite and helpful. Can't wait for our stay in April

    « Great Choice! »

Just returned from a 2 night B&B stay, our first visit to this area. Hotel is in a stunning location and we had a lovely view from bedroom. On arrival we were given the wrong room but this was quickly and efficiently rectified. The buffet breakfast was the best we've had anywhere, lots of choice and well cooked food. Also the staff were very attentive and friendly. In fact all the hotel staff were efficient, friendly and helpful. We ate in the bar both evenings; the food being standard reasonably priced pub fare, well presented and tasty. The only criticism being just one beer available and on the second night even this was off. There is an excellent gym and swimming pool. This is a 3 star hotel and whilst the décor reflects this, all rooms were immaculate and comfy, and the service is definitely 5 star. We really enjoyed our short break and will definitely revisit.

    « Wedding weekend »

Spent 2 nights here for a family wedding. The bedroom is above average in size with comfortable furnishings and very clean. Our double room had two double beds which were very comfortable. Hairdryer, tea and coffee and iron/ ironing board were also provided. The bathroom had a lovely deep bath, as well as a shower. The water pressure was not brilliant for the shower but very adequate. Toiletries were provided and lovely soft towels. We ate in the bar for lunch and evening meal, prices were reasonable and the food and service good. The hotel also had a swimming pool and gym but cannot comment on these as did not use them The wedding was held in the hotel and it was fantastic, good venue, beautiful scenery and the meal all excellent On the Sunday we stayed for the car very which was exceptional value. Would definitely recommend this hotel

    « 1 nights Fizz Friday deal »

We first visited this hotel 24 years ago and have visited quite a number of times over the years. Have to say this time we were a little disappointed. The rooms are tired and have not changed much over the years. The bathroom was in much need of renovation and there was a problem with water pressure and airlocked pipes. The shower did not get warm let alone hot. The restaurant had moved and we did not feel the quality of food & service was as good as previous visits. Breakfast was very disappointing, previously it had been cooked to order but is now a buffet service and not nearly as good. Overall the deal we went on was very reasonable but I would have felt very cheated if I had paid full price. The building has plenty of character and it would be a shame if they let things slip.

« Wedding over night stay. »

We had a brilliant time at the Derwent manor for the wedding we attended. The food at this hotel was lovely, drinks are responsibly priced. The rooms are very dated but we had been told they are going to get around to update them. In the new rooms I would definitely recommend putting a fridge in and a few bottles of water. As this is the only hotel I've stayed at and now had any water in the hotel, especially when you wake up during the night for a drink. The rooms are clean, the staff are friendly and we even managed to check in before 3pm thanks to the staff for arranging us to check in earlier. We did hear a lot from our room, especially from the people next door. Breakfast was lovely lots to choose from. I would maybe consider sorting the road coming up to the hotel as that's a accident waiting to happen especially in the dark. I would definitely return.

    « Short Break »

We visited as part of the package. We had bed, breakfast and evening meal. Some of the reviews have been negative. The hotel is currently undergoing a major refurbishment but this being done in stages. The work does not impact on your stay there is no noise. The rooms are dated in terms of the fittings and bathrooms, however, they are clean and very comfortable. The breakfast was excellent, great range of options and taste/palates. Evening meal was table d'hote, great range of dishes and we had wonderful food, well cooked and presented and clearly not pre done and simply warmed up. Great service and attention to details. Would use again.

« Beautiful setting and peaceful retreat »

As always the staff were efficient and friendly. There were several weddings at the hotel this weekend and so the staff were very busy but they were friendly, pleasant and made everyone feel very welcome. Our room was very comfortable with two large double beds. The food in the bar was excellent. The service was good. The restaurant was closed for refurbishing so in the evening we dined in the Gallery Room. It is a very elegant and comfortable room. The service and food were excellent. Mushrooms, Prawn cocktail, chicken breast and pork steaks were all very tasty. We really didn't need a dessert but couldn't resist the ice cream sundaes and they were truly excellent. The wines were good quality and very reasonably priced. Breakfast was self service, well presented and cooked, plentiful and lots of choice. All in all an excellent stay. Well done and thank you to all the staff.

    « A pleasant stay »

All staff were polite, friendly and helpful. The hotel is currently undergoing refurbishment however all the public areas were clean and presentable. The building is lovely and has some excellent features. The hotel obviously hosts many weddings. My room hadn't been refurbished but was comfortable. The décor was little outdated and the bathroom although clean and functional would benefit from being refurbished. The food at dinner and at breakfast was lovely, compliments to the chef. I would recommend staying at this hotel if you are in the area. I will be returning myself for a longer stay next month.

Well done to all the staff who are involved with this hotel, check in was fast and efficent, cottage was clean and stocked, we took our dog who throughly enjoyed the long walks around the hotel grounds, drinks are reasonably priced and the dinner, bed and breakfast deal was very good. Food was hot and the service again was very efficient and friendly. Lovely fire in bar area and clean facilities when using pool, sauna gym etc. We will be returning in summertime for sure and recommending you to my clients. Well done and keep it up ? an ok place, but was dissapointed in the state of the room for £147 torn bedding hole in net curtains, cracked cups, rust in bath, was awarded £40 of room rate, which i don't think was good enough, stayed at Hilton Hotels for less, if the refurbished rooms arn't complete don't charge that price for tired old rooms.

    « "Another Great Night" »

We have just spent another great night at The Derwent Manor. We took advantage of last years Black Friday deal and as usual was excellent value for money. On arrival we were given the key for the Colbec Suite , a great upgrade surprise. Large bedroom, large bathroom, large comfy king sized bed, easy chairs, also well furnished with plenty of drawer space and large wardrobe. There was also a lounge with comfortable three piece and coffee table and large t.v. Next to the lounge was a single bedroom with its own shower / toilet area. The easily controlled heating system kept the whole place snug and warm. Unfortunately we had to have our evening meal in the bar as the restaurant is being refurbished but the food choice was excellent as usual. Breakfast was served in the Grand Hall , again the menu had a great selection of hot and cold quality food. The staff throughout the hotel were excellent and very efficient and friendly, thanks for making our stay so enjoyable.

    « Much improved hotel »

This was a night away for me and the wife...Black Friday deal £35 each for an overnight stay and three course meal and breakfast. We got married here in 2009 and visited the hotel a couple of times over the years and found service poor, food very poor etc. However, big change this time: good points: -ample parking, car park was very busy (Friday night) but still no issues. -reception fine no issues checking in, got all of the information we needed friendly staff but not over the top. room very easy to find. -3 course meal - this was tip top couldn't find any faults and that's very strange for me. There was a function on in the restaurant and it was very busy, but plenty of staff service time was fine, staff all helpful and not over the top - appeared to be a well organised set up - most importantly the food was very nice. -Room - it's a three star hotel and the room reflected this. No issues, nice view and clean -Breakfast - buffet style. No issues ample choice healthy choices or fry up - service quick and again very well organised. -Checkout - no issues. -Also worth mentioning the hotel bar is nice, staff offered good service. Bad points: -Bathroom inside bedroom well overdue a refurb. -drink prices - like most hotels crazy prices £5 a glass of wine £4 a pint. I have to admit I was very surprised how much this hotel has improved and by how much I enjoyed the stay.

« Great staff but a little tired »

Stayed at the Derwent Manor during half term with my children. It is in a great location for access to Northumberland, Co. Durham, Newcastle and the coast. The staff were all friendly, helpful, chatty and just generally lovely. The hotel itself is what I have come to expect from Best Western - in desperate need of some TLC and updating (although this is ongoing). The leisure facilities were great and much appreciated by the kids. My only complaint was the incredibly loud bedroom doors, which not only bang, but shake the room. It was very hard getting little ones to sleep with the relentless banging from other guests as they entered their rooms. There must be a quieter way to close doors, surely? Overall, it was a good stay, and I would be recommend this hotel but would think twice about staying again with children.

    « Lovely Night Away »

I stayed here for 1 night with my husband. We went for a meal in the lovely restaurant, we both went for the leak and potato soup, steak and sticky toffee pudding. The food was lovely, steak a little fatty. The staff were brilliant. The cottage was decorated beautiful however it was way too hot overnight. The breakfast, in my opinion, let the whole place down.

    « Hotel in a wonderful position. »

Another Groupon deal, the hotel is in a wonderful position overlooking the rolling hills of the north Pennine's. Extensive leisure centre on the site. Our room 118 was large, 2 comfortable arm chairs, huge 50inch TV, ample en suite facilities bath with power shower, I did have a problem connecting to WIFi but as we were only there for the night it wasn't a problem. Hot drinks tray on the desk in the room, a large and I mean large bed. The meal in the restaurant was sufficient, the choice was wide and varied, my wife being vegetarian requested a choice off the bar menu which didn't phase the attentive staff. All in all a thoroughly pleasant experience.

Stayed here in February and I have to say the visit was amazing. From check in to check out I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. When we got to our room I was amazed at how clean and pretty it was. The room and bathroom were both modern and had all the features you would expect and more. The food was also amazing and the staff were really attentive. Overall the stay was amazing and the bed felt like sleeping on a cloud. Would definitely stay again.

I booked this hotel for Valentine's Day booked a suite that was advertised as the wedding suite we actually got a old undated Bolbec suite which was nothing like what was advertised it had doors hanging off the wardrobe and propped up and the interior was absolutely vile no wonder they don't have any pictures of this suite on there site and actually advertise you the wedding suite which you are lead to berlieve that's what your booking. On complaining they offerd to move us which we agreed too immediately and what we received was a basic room set away from the hotel which had a shower in and a bed that's all. I wanted a romantic weekend away with my mrs with a nice suite and a bath etc if I wanted a basic room I would of booked one in the beginning. It was absolutely diss-heartening and ruined our weekend. I've stayed in better travel lodges if I'm honest. The best park of the hotel was the bar food which was lovely but i will not be suggesting to any one to stay at this hotel. I've stayed in best western before ie walworth castle which was amazing but derwent manor we will be not returning any time soon. You need to update your site and show people pictures of what they are actually receiving and not your wedding suite its miss leading and quite frankly robbing people I'm sorry to rant on but it's disgusting!

« Amazing Hotel with Great Staff and Brilliant Rooms »

My girlfriend and I travelled from Glasgow for a one night stay on Valentine's weekend and loved every minute of it. We stayed in the Elm Lodge which is in a block just across from the main building and it was absolutely brilliant. We enjoyed a swim, sauna and jacuzzi in the spa before having a lovely three course meal followed by a few drinks in the bar. Breakfast the next morning was absolutely brilliant and the staff were all lovely and helpful - holding flowers behind the desk so I could surprise my girlfriend on Valentine's Day. Would highly recommend this hotel and look forward to returning for another chilled out getaway. P.S. love the decor in the men's toilets!

« Disgusting from beginning to end. »

From checking in to our suite to checking out of our room was a disappointment. I few weeks prior too our stay I upgraded to a suite as we were here for a mini honeymoon. We checked in and were given keys to our suite which was across the court yard in another building. When we walked in the first thing we noticed was how very small the suite was. We were only stating two nights so this did not matter. We then noticed the dust. Everywhere you looked was covered in a thick layer of dust. The table, sofa, the bed everywhere, you could actually see your footprints in the dust on the floor it was so bad. We decided we could not stay in this so we went back to reception we explained the situation and showed the receptionist photos of the room. We were given the option of waiting for it to be cleaned or downgrade to another room. We opted for the downgrade as the suite was so dirty it wasn't going to be a quick clean. We were given a room in the same building an do be honest this was not much better. There were holes in the wall, marks all over the walls, the door ledges were thick with dirt, no mirror in the room, a glass table with a chip out the front of it which was sharp, no phone in room so you could not contact reception. Our evening meal was served on a tiny table at the back of a function as the restaurant was closed. Breakfasts were very poor. Poor quality food and very salty and over cooked. The whole place felt very run down despite our room supposedly been one that had been refurbished. The only good things I can mention is Hannah the young lady on reception who was lovely and the fact the shower was very powerful and always hot. All in all a terrible experience. PS posted this on to their Facebook page with photos of the rooms. It said it had posted but it's not on there. I'm guessing they accept what goes on under visitors posts.

    « Great value »

My husband and myself stayed overnight on a groupon deal of dinner bed and breakfast. We had a very relaxing getaway, very friendly staff throughout the hotel, especially the lady in the bar who was lovely. The meal was very nice, I paid extra for steak but well worth it, includes a bottle of wine so even better! The room was spacious and clean but slightly tired in decor, could do with some modernisation, great views from the room. The breakfast was also very good with various options to choose from. We used the spa on the Monday morning which is just across the car park in its own building, which was great having a nice pool, sauna and jacuzzi, perfect for chilling out. For what we paid it was great value for money, will definitely be returning very soon. Sharon Donaldson

The hotel itself is good and nicely decorated

Stayed here for 1 night on a special offer deal £109 bb & 3 course meal each for two people. We have stayed here before about a year ago & as you drive up to hotel you can see they have made a lot of changes. Hotel now has an outside area with big heaters, spa looks as though it has been refurbished. Nice reception with lovely girl who said our room wasn't ready yet. Girl at reception said that the restaurant was having a refurb so was it okay for us to have our meal in the function room with soul & mowtown entertainment. This wasn't a problem. She suggested drinks in the pub onsite & bite to eat. Pub was very quiet. We had sandwiches for lunch. Mine was a club sandwich on toasted bread. Wasn't fantastic the chicken was dry & looked like it had been re heated. Wouldn't get it again. Room was clean, big but maybe needs a refurb. Function room for our evening meal was set out nice with guests of hotel sat near bar & big round tables near dance floor for people who must of paid for the entertainment. The menu wasn't what we thought. We were told we could choose anything off the menu. This wasn't the case there was a set menu with a few choices for starters, main & dessert. Don't get me wrong what we ordered was lovely but I definitely wouldn't of chose that if we had choice off menu what the hotel said we would have. The gentleman singing was really good & we did have a good night. Breakfast was nice with lot of choice. This again was in the function room as the restaurant was having a refurb. Overall we had a lovely night away & will definitely return. Didn't use the spa but looks nice.

we stayed at the Derwent Manor Hotel for the second time, as from the time of check in till you check out you are met by lovely friendly staff. The rooms are always very clean and tidy, and I would always tell people to try for themselves

    « A weekend away »

I stayed here for two nights in February with my daughter. The hotel is in a beautiful spot, quite remote, but has every mod con and makes for a wonderfully relaxing 'away-from-it-all' stay. The staff are warm and friendly, the hotel in the process of being upgraded but the room we had was great. Twin beds meant two huge double beds! This was a return visit as we had so enjoyed our stay a year ago.

This is a good class hotel full of character friendly staff good food and good accommodation ,Like all hotels though ,they try to make their money at the bar, not really a problem, unless your an alcoholic. Good value. Goodbye.

    « Wedding »

Myself and my husband renewed our wedding vows here. From the time we booked in to the time we checked out was fantastic. The staff were polite, helpful and sociable. They couldn't have done anything better. From the hotel receptionist , event co-ordinator and the other hotel staff. The suite we had was clean and well equipped. We controlled the room temperatures which was ideal as the bedrooms could be set at a different temperature to the lounge area. The food was fantastic even down to the children's menu in the bar and restaurant. The pool and spa were enjoyed by both my children who totally enjoyed themselves. I would definitely stay here again as would the many family and friends that stayed with us.

« Not ideal for children »

It is the second time I've stayed at this hotel and unfortunately both times have been a disappointment. There are some good points but my overall opinion of the hotel is that it's sub-standard and not somewhere I would class as a place to take your children to stay. The twin room was large enough for a family of 4 with plentiful cushions and seating. The room was really clean but far too hot, especially during the night which made for a restless sleep for all of us. The TV was a generous size which the children enjoyed and there was plenty tea and coffee available. However, on arrival we were told the pool had to be cleaned (at 2.30pm) and the children had to wait until 6pm until they could go swimming. The only thing to do was explore the grounds but it was really cold and wet, then wait in our room until the pool was ready. This left very little time to enjoy the pool as children must vacate the pool at 7pm. This also meant we had to have a late evening meal (8.30pm) and the children were really hungry by that time so we chose to go into the bar for food. We were quite shocked that there was no children's menu as the hotel does welcome families. This meant we paid full price for both children (£11.50 each) and the choices were limited for the children. I even asked if they did children's portions and was told no. Service was quick and the staff are very friendly but 3 of our meals were 'just warm' when they arrived. There was no music on in the part of the bar we were sat in and the area itself was quite cold most of the night, we had to leave earlier than planned and take our drinks to our room as our 7 year old said he was too cold. The leisure facilities are the only real highlight to the hotel for us as a family. The pool, sauna and jacuzzi are great. The gym is well equipped and airy and the leisure attendant is lovely. I wouldn't say it's a bad hotel at all, I just expected the standards to be a little higher than they are and for the needs of families to be catered to more than they are. Probably a better hotel for group parties, weddings and adult trips but I won't take the children back.

    « great »

I had an overnight here to deliver some training in the local town. Got there late to a lovely big double room. Managed to catch the restaurant, had a very tasty steak and ale pie, too big to eat. Great service with really friendly staff made for a nice atmosphere for someone eating on their own. Spoke to a guy who stays there regularly who told me the whole menu is good. Sat by the big open fire in a comfy leather armchair. Lots of wood and stone with a suit of armour in the foyer, amazing views of hills. This is one of the highest towns so no surprise this time of year it was a bit windy. Had a great cooked breakfast served by super friendly staff again. I've got to say it was good all round.

    « Wonderful staff a great stay »

From our arrivlal and greeting in Reception to service at dinner and breakfast all the staff we encountered including housekeeping are a credit to this hotel. Their friendly approach and helpful attitude ensured our stay was most enjoyable. We had a three course dinner and breakfast included in our stay which was bought as a Christmas present from our daughter. The food was well presented and plentiful at dinner together with our friendly waitress Annie it was most enjoyable. The bar staff were attentive everyone involved seemed to enjoy their work. Breakfast was plentiful and hot served quickly agan by Annie. The only complaint was the sausage at breakfast which had obviously been cooked for some time which made the skin hard and inedible this was a shame as it spoilt an otherwise great breakfast. The hotel is still undergoing some refurbishment I wish them good luck for the future.

« Great place, just go! »

I have stayed here quite a few times and it doesn't fail to surprise me every time I stay. The staff are fantastic particularly the bar/restaurant staff. The rooms are very clean and to a pretty good standard with comfortable beds, safe etc. Unfortunately once again the pool was out of order which I was slightly annoyed about but the gym made up for this by have new equipment installed. I truly think the staff and the food in the bar/restaurant could teach other mainline hotels a thing or two. I didn't get their names but they are always friendly, approachable and helpful. Breakfast is excellent. I always try to book the leisure break as this provides the best value in my eyes. Go and stay there you will understand why I think it is so good.

« Double booked, very noisy. »

We arrived only to be told we had been double booked, to which they showed very little concern and were extremely unhelpful.. only when we kicked up a fuss were are complaints taken seriously and eventually came up.with another room. This room was most certainly not to the standard we had booked for. The noise was ridiculous and continued into the early hours when sleep.became possible only to woken a couple of hours later (around 5 am) by the staff arriving and deliveries. Our complaints were yet again shrugged off on check out. Extremely poor.

    « Fizz Friday »

My husband and I stayed here for the Fizz Friday deal as a gift from our children. We arrived early to use the pool and were pleasantly surprised to be told our room was ready for us. Our room was clean and had everything we could need including 2 double beds. We used the pool which was a nice although a little cold. Our evening meal was not served in the restaurant due to refurbishments but the room we ate in was lovely. The meal its self was beautiful as was breakfast. We enjoyed drinks and a game of pool in the bar afterwards. All in all a delightful stay, staff are excellent and can not do enough for you. Will definitely return and would highly recommend this place.

    « Lovely time away »

My husband and I spent our 6th wedding anniversary here between Christmas and New Year 2015. The service from Reception was excellent, very friendly and helpful. The room was excellent, 2 double beds and very spacious. I can see that the hotel rooms are being refurbished and they need to be more modernised, but we couldn't complain at all about our room - tea, coffee and biscuits restocked at our request. We dined 2 nights in the restaurant - excellent service and good food. The hotel pub was fabulous - the food was outstanding, we ate here twice and couldn't fault it at all. Overall a really lovely experience and will return.

« Lovely hotel set in lovely countryside »

We stayed here after buying a Black Friday deal - £70 for DBB. We booked two rooms and planned to go with our friends. We had childcare problems so had to contact the hotel to ask if we could also bring our son. So for only £20 extra they included DBB for him. We also checked whether our rooms were adjoining, which they weren't so the receptionist went out of her way to rejig the rooms to enable us to have this. We had two large lovely rooms both containing two double beds, large bathroom and large 49" HD TV. Our room had patio doors leading outside the hotel which we found a lovely feature. We enjoyed drinks in the grouse and claret bar. Later we had our evening meal in the function room. The menu had a lot to choose from and everybody enjoyed their food. The breakfast was buffet style but plenty to choose from including continental and traditional choices. All the food was tasty and well cooked. We swam both days and while the pool is small it's comfortable and includes a sauna, jacuzzi and newly refurbished gym. We would definitely return and have never stayed in such an individual (nice to be somewhere that is different from your standard "all rooms the same across the country" hotels) but lovely hotel, with staff that are an excellent compliment to this hotel.

« good value, comfortable hotel in beautiful setting »

stayed here for 1 night in December for a friends wedding. The function room is beautiful with a stunning chandelier and a minstrels gallery with 2nd bar overlooking the main room. there are some unusual items around the hotel such as a suit or armour and on the 1st floor a chaise longue and some nude statues. I found the food portions to be a good size and good quality food. I cannot comment on price as it was part of the wedding breakfast. the hotel room was very spacious. We had a double room on the ground floor. A lot of our group who booked a twin room had 2 double beds. We also got an advance deal so the room was good value. The hotel bar is very cosy with wooden beams, fireplaces and sofas and has a good choice of wines. The hotel is set back from the main road (a68) along a long drive this makes it very quiet and peaceful with stunning views in all directions. I would happily stay here again.

    « Groupon Deal »

Just used our Groupon voucher for a one night stay DB&B with a bottle of wine and this is the best voucher stay we have ever had. Yes the hotel does have a lot of building work going on and will be stunning when completed but this did not affect our stay greatly. Our room was large with 2 double beds, dinner was fantastic and served with our bottle of wine (no having to explain about the wine and voucher) and the staff were so friendly and attentive. The service was excellent and we shall definitely be returning when work completed.

« Really good in parts »

Our first choice of hotel in Cumbria was flooded out, so Derwent Manor was something of a second choice. Our overall impression was that they were overbooked, and in parts the strain showed. New Year's eve dinner was really very good, and the group excellent. But there wasn't as full a wine list as I would have expected, and the best of the wines were pretty average. The suite was not so much a suite as accommodation for a family While we were there Best Western updated (reduced) the benefits of their loyalty programme without telling us, which caused some dismay at checking out time. At the end of our stay it became a bit of a game to spot the table served by the hotel's permanent staff, who were unfailingly excellent. If you got one of the others service varied from average to really quite awful. However, I suspect that weekend became a question of survival for the hotel, bearing in mind the weather conditions and, leaving aside Best Western's pricing muddle which was hardly of the hotel's making, I think they did very well. I would happily go again, with some confidence of a pleasant stay, although I would avoid moment's when many other hotels are flooded out.

    « Disappointing »

Got what we thought was a good deal to stay at this hotel between Christmas and new year with Groupon, but after arriving came to the conclusion that you get what you pay for. Our room was in a separate building which was a bit disappointing as it meant we had to walk across the courtyard each time we wanted to eat or visit the bar for a drink, however this may have been a blessing in disguise as there were at least 2 weddings going on. Because the hotel was very full, they had to use one of the large function rooms for breakfast and evening meals instead of the gorgeous looking usual restaurant, the room was large, quite cold and lacking any kind of atmosphere. Also, the staff seemed unable to cope with the larger numbers and each time we went to the 'restaurant' we had to wait in a queue to be seated while the staff ran around trying clear and re-set tables. After we were seated for our evening meal on our first night (this was included in the price we paid for the package) we were handed a menu that was obviously not their usual a la carte menu but the choices were still to our liking. A waitress took our drinks order and another took our good order, our starters arrived fairly quickly but we did wait quite a while between courses. When our main course arrived, my husband had ordered salmon and I had roast beef, both were over cooked but not terribly hot and I would say a bit uninspired with the accompaniments. The dessert was really nice and arrived quite promptly. During our meal we were never asked if we required any further drinks and the staff were so busy it was almost impossible to catch one of them to ask. The next morning there was a queue for breakfast and we waited more than 10 minutes to be seated, it was a buffet style breakfast with tea or coffee brought to your table, however there were people waiting all of the time for things that had run out I.e., bacon, mushrooms, fruit juice etc to be replenished, so it was a bit chaotic. Again, to use the leisure facilities we had to cross the courtyard as it was located in yet another building, and because the weather was cold and wet, this was a little bit of an ordeal, especially if you were still a bit damp from the pool. Overall, the stay was OK, but not great.

    « Our wedding day »

Derwent manor is a hotel we have visited many times and enjoyed every stay. It therefore made perfect sense to hold our wedding there. The hotel has in the last couple of years been taken over by new owners that have invested huge amounts of money into this beautiful little country retreat. The hotel staff are very pleasant and polite and will accommodate any reasonable requests. Food is delicious and of excellent quality. My husband and I had the most beautiful day of our lives here when we wed here on the 6th of June last year. The staff made us feel very relaxed and they helped make our very special day run smooth as a whistle from the day we organised it to the end of our wedding day. There was actually another wedding on the same day as ours and because the staff managed the day so well we wouldn't have even know they were there if it weren't for the registrar telling us. Alot of our family stayed over the night of the wedding and we enjoyed a fun morning in the swimming pool and jacuzzi. I can now say is sparkling since the new take over. Its the perfect venue for any wedding or important life event. Or just a lovely night away

    « Twixmas stay 2015 »

Arrived 27th December for 3 nights, pleasant staff, beautiful room, lovely views, comfy bed. Dinner included on 1st night, we were joined by members of our family but live entertainment was rather loud, so difficult to converse. As we finished an excellent dinner, (around 9pm) the live entertainment also finished, we found this a little strange as it would perhaps have been nice to have a dance. For the remainder of our stay we ate in the 'Pub' downstairs, food was ok but a bit expensive. Drinks were, we thought, very expensive at £14.00 for a bottle of house wine. The tables and the bar top were sticky and in need of a very good clean. Breakfasts were a bit of a bun fight, not enough tables, staff didn't seem to know how to cope with the number of guests, hot food running out, tables not cleared. All in all not the best experience in the world.

« Surprised by how nice a hotel it was for the price; well worth it!! »

Reception staff all very helpful and kind. The room was clean and comfortable, especially the bed; thanks, as a comfortable bed at my age, is paramount, lol. It had a nice bathroom, with a metal bathtub, no plastic rubbish; nice. I dropped 1* due to the meandering drive; it is quite precarious and very much in need of repairs to one side; parts of it have fallen away! Very dangerous, particularly in inclement weather (it was raining and snowing) and at night. Lights only down one side, while the bits of it that have 'gone' are on the other, dark side (if driving at night).

    « Great stay! »

We book into this hotel as an overnight stay to break our journey home from Scotland. On arrival we were greeted by a friendly receptionist, and on going to our room though it was a mistake, as we had been allocate a wonderful suite! This consisted on a Queen size bed, and had an adjoining bathroom suite with bath. The second bedroom also had an adjoining bathroom with shower. There was also a large lounge with easy chairs and large TV, including tea making facilities. Outside we had a large balcony, which had great views of the countryside. The three course evening meal was very good, and was nice presented, as well as a full English Buffet breakfast. What a great stay and really a nice finish to our Christmas

    « New Year's Eve Family Night »

Attended family function on New Year's Eve with two teenage daughters, aged 19 and 13. Also stayed overnight in 2 x twin rooms. Event was a good night, band and disco were pretty good. No welcome drink on arrival and menu was set with no choice. I thought tomato soup was a strange choice for a starter and I would have preferred vegetable instead but never mind. My youngest daughter had to be paid for as an adult, being over age 12 but she would not have eaten the adult choice of menu. Thankfully she was allowed to opt for the children's choice instead. Rooms very dated, especially the bathrooms. Look like they have jumped out of the 80's. They are in dire need of refurbishment. Very old fashioned dark mahogany furniture in rooms which is also shabby. Rooms were clean though so no complaints. I thought the cost of each room was a bit steep considering that we had incurred the cost of the function and bearing in mind the condition of the rooms. Room rate included breakfast buffet but by the time we arrived, a lot of things had ran out so had to wait around and ask staff to refill joice, milk, etc. There was natural yogurt but the granola and fruit was all gone and not refilled. No glasses to out juice in. A bit mediocre in my opinion. Overall though the function made up for disappointment with the room and I would probably book again.

What a fantastic night my group of friends and I had at this event. This is the second year we've attended and it's safe to say this year was even better than last! The food is unbelievably gorgeous and we were treat to 7 courses! The entertainment was brilliant for all ages and was great to get you in the mood for 12 o clock! As always the room was decorated beautifully and the staff could not do enough for the guests. Well done to all involved particularly the head chef! I can't wait for next year!

    « great stay »

Stayed here with friends for one night, we were on a special offer which included dinner, breakfast and a bottle of wine, and for what we paid it was outstanding value. Firstly our room 232 was large and clean with 2 double beds tea and coffee facilities, the only negatives I can find was that the furnishing in the room needed updating the bathroom was also in need of updating but was fully functional, I was told that there are ongoing refurbishment at the hotel so I would think that rooms would be updated. We ate in the bar when we arrived and ordered a steak sandwich between 2 which I was pleased with as the sandwich was enough for 2, this was very good no complaints. The bar area is looking a bit tired but again I think with the ongoing refurb this will be done. Our meal in the evening was very good, we even had live music from a female singer and the room itself was wonderful with chandelier's and exposed beams, breakfast was good also with enough choice for me. We did try and use the fitness centre but at this time it was closed until 12 so we couldn't use it, but the lovely receptionist seeing our disappointment gave us a complimentary day pass to use when we return. Which I will. So basically no issues, nothing that wouldn't stop me recommending this hotel to anyone, my experience was great, well done Derwent Manor

« This place is amazing!!!!! »

I visited Derwent Manor in December 2015 with 12 of my friends and family to celebrate my parents' Ruby Wedding Anniversary - and I'll definitely be back! The hotel itself is stunning and has recently been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard. Although we weren't at a function, I did have a little peek in the rooms and they looked amazing! The hotel rooms are tastefully decorated, comfy, well equipped, spotlessly clean and beautifully modern - what more could you want? The staff were attentive and couldn't do enough for us, right from check in through to the wait staff in the restaurant, the service was second to none! The food was amazing and the children with us also had a good choice. When you're with a big party, it's sometimes a worry, but there was something to please everyone. The bar area is cosy and we sat here for hours never feeling that we'd out stayed out welcome, and the pool table was a welcomed addition for the men in the group. There was a wide selection of drinks, which again was great as everyone got what they wanted! The next morning, our breakfast didn't disappoint either. All in all, it is a fabulous place and I'm so glad we chose it for our celebrations - I will definitely be back and I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a little luxury, which is also fantastic value for money! Many, many thanks to all of the staff, from a very satisfied customer.

    « nice hotel »

Firstly this hotel has charm, it is situated off the main road and has beautiful views across the countryside. The spa is located 50 yards from the hotel in seperate building, we found it clean and warm with again views over the hills. Staff work hard here though at times there seemed to be too few and as it was a very busy weekend so at times you would have to wait or repeat an order in the restaurant however the food was superb i can recommend the lamb wow. Room charming but i hear the hotel is getting refurbed in jan and it probably ready for this. Overall our overnight was pleasant and worth what we paid.

    « Good night out »

The surroundings are beautiful. There is a gym and pool. The interior is very nice. We went to a Christmas do last night and the room and bar were lovely. The food was good, the staff very friendly and polite, nothing too much trouble. I haven't seen the rooms but understand the suites are fabulous from the way friends have spoken about them after staying. Great night shame it is £1.90 for a soda when other hotels don't charge but it's a minor thing.

    « quality family time »

Although initially there was a mistake with our booking when we arrived we were given our key to the outside buildings. The willow i think it was called. Very spacious clean and modern. The swimming area good size and sauna room adequate. We had the set meal which was top notch food, the kids had chicken strips which were home made. Good portion sizes very good quality food. Presentation very good. Stayed the night and has a full cooked breakfast to order in the morning plenty to choose from. Would defo stay here again.

    « Good nights stay »

I stayed here with three other colleagues, the hotel was a little tired in some rooms, but clean and nice sized rooms. There is also a small pool/gym/sauna that can be used, and was very clean and tidy. We all ate from the bar menu, which was fine, the food and drink was served quickly and well. The only downside is that phone coverage is poor and you would have to drive to visit any other bar/restaurant, but overall a good stay.

« Mirror mirror on the wall »

Visited for a 1 night stay on Saturday 12th December. The day we had horrific snow. We only live 25 miles away but it took 2 hours to get there. After a stressful journey relieved to arrive we checked into Cherry in the annex. The room was small but ok so we headed off for a drink in the bar, which was very welcoming. We headed back to shower and change ready for our 3 course meal. The only provisions in the bathroom cabinet was 2 body wash and a small soap. There was nowhere in the cubicle to hold the shampoo etc while you showered it had to be held in your hand. Good job I packed shampoo. After I finished showering I tried to open the cubicle door. The whole door came off in my hand. I was stuck holding onto the door which had come off the rails. I shouted for my husband. He got me out and then he tried to put it back on the rails but couldn't so as there isn't a phone in the room he went over to tell reception. While he was gone I started to dry my hair. The mirror is in a dark corner with no light above it. What a struggle. He came back with a key for a Cedars room across the corridor for us to move to. This was slightly bigger but no mirror in the room itself at all. How would anyone getting ready for a wedding manage? The only mirror was in the bathroom and no power point in there for a hairdryer, no shaving point either. So I had to stay and finish my hair in the first room struggling in the dark. Then I had to wait to apply my make up until hubby had showered to use the bathroom mirror, Very frustrating. The small shower head in this bathroom wouldn't stay up so had to be held in your hand to shower. Yes there is a large overhead shower head but that's not the kind we would use. We went across for our meal and handed they key in. I was a bit disgruntled by then, explained about the mirror situation in both rooms and was just told 'oh I haven't been in the rooms I don't know what they are like' by the Receptionist. At that time a man was also stood there. We went for our meal and chose prawn cocktail to start. It was a bit of a joke really. prawns the size of cooking prawns less than a dessert spoon of sauce, a roll of cucumber skin, diced tomato and rocket served on a plate. We weren't impressed. The gentleman from reception came for the plates and asked was it ok? I said no it wasn't. It's probably the worst prawn cocktail I've ever had. He then said 'Oh you are the lady who complained at reception aren't you?' Not very professional at all. The main course was fine and then the dessert sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice-cream came with an apology of we have no vanilla so we gave you chocolate but you can have strawberry if you want? Shouldn't they have told us this before serving it. Neither of us like chocolate ice-cream so would have opted for a different dessert. Then we struck up a conversation with a couple nearby, we were telling them about the shower when the gentleman appeared from the blue and butted in and said a few words and then said maybe we should discuss this later in reception. The couple were also gobsmacked at the way he made a show of us. Not once was there an apology. My husband asked for his name and he said Ian Reed. He didn't take us to one side and apologize he avoided eye contact whenever our paths crossed. He made me feel uncomfortable. I was waiting for him to appear at any minute and I felt intimidated. Breakfast the next morning was lovely. We packed to leave, used the bathroom and the door handle came off in our hand, so reported it on the way out. I don't know how your staff are trained in customer relations? An apology would have been acceptable but to say ' weren't you the lady complaining at reception'? That was unforgivable. Who wouldn't complain about a shower door coming off, moving rooms and not having a basic mirror? I can't believe no other person has pointed this out. I certainly don't pack a mirror every time I go away and this is the first time I've had this problem. Anyway rant over. I can only say this hotel was average because of the total lack of customer care. I have photos of the prawn cocktail and of my husband of trying to sort the shower door should management want to see them. Oh the one good thing was everywhere was toasty warm. I forgot to say, this was my birthday treat.

    « great christmas party »

well guys every year we take away some of our good customers for a night away to celebrate xmas, we did overlook Derwent for the bigger venues Hardwick hall or slaley but we decided after a bad experience at Hardwick we would give Derwent a go, wow! best decision we made, great service from 12noon in the bar Jason a very competent young man served all 14 verywell, we then went into the spa facilities, not massive but adequate. rooms were all good size 2 x double beds clean and tidy, well equipped, shower was the only disappointing thing, no pressure, but you got wet ! gig was upstairs Ed sheeran tribute, very very good, table set was nice, food was outstanding for mass produced, well done, we were served at good speed and very professional overlooked by a guy (manager I surmise) again well done. drinks were reasonably priced, and service was good. a special mention to Karen from the downstairs bar, who stayed open for another drink (nightcap) so thank you for the Crack! breakfast again very well stocked and hot, nice to soak up the alcohol. we will come back next year if the entertainment is good, well done guys you impressed myself and my 13 guests!

    « Beautiful! »

We stayed at this hotel on Sunday evening. Very impressed on entering the hotel and the location, although somewhat remote, was very nice and rural. Our twin room has 2 double beds and is the biggest i've stayed in, very clean and comfortable. Staff are very helpful and friendly. Food in the Restaurant both for dinner and breakfast was of a high standard. We have already booked to visit and again and would highly recommend! I imagine this hotel would make the perfect wedding venue but nice for a relaxing break also. Thank you

    « Excellent hotel »

Stayed here recently for a night to take our wee boy to beamish. Hotel very good and i can see what people mean about the hotel feeling a little old in regards to the bathrooms etc but they were clean, working and a good size so no problem from us. (we had a modern flatscreen tv) The girl on the front desk was excellent with us and my 4 year old son which made life easy when checking in etc. Only grumble was that you had to go outside to get to the pool - just as well we were getting wet as it was pouring! overall very good value for money and would go back

« Return visit and still good value for money »

This was a return visit with friends this time. Warm welcome at reception, room good size and comfortable, we ate in the restaurant the first night, staff very pleasant and made us feel comfortable, second night ate in the bar, unfortunately there was an event going on in a room near the bar and people from that were going through the bar to stand in the porch and smoke and the smoke came into the bar area, the staff did ask people not to smoke in the porch but they couldn't police it all the time. Good breakfast each morning. As I have said before we will be back, great place to stay while exploring the area

    « Business trip »

Competitively priced accommodation, nice room and very comfortable bed. Suitable for the business traveler I would say. However, do not eat or drink in the bar. The lasagna I had was made with passata not bechamel sauce and had been kept warm so long it had dried out and the beer was the worst pint of ale I have ever been served (and that is saying something). Having complained the barman, who agreed and was very helpful, gave me a different pint but that was nearly as bad and I ended up not drinking anything.

    « our wedding on 12/8/@6 »

From start to finish we had a wonderful day. The pre-planning was a great support, nothing was left to chance. The choice of menus was fantastic as were the choice of rooms for our reception. The views and places for superb photos is unbeatable. The dressed room on the day in the Grand Hall was breathtaking, it was beautifully laid out. Ian actedasour MC and he pitched it perfectly. Pippa looked after the top table and later at the buffet was exceptional, she thought of our every requirement, nothing was too much trouble. Our guests were all completely satisfied with the service they received. Our accommodation was excellent over the 2 days of our stay. All in all our day was made more memorable by the management and staff at this beautiful hotel. I would thoroughly recommend it az a wedding venue or as a holiday destination. Thanks to everyone concerned for our wonderful day.

« Made our big day extra special »

I was married here October 31st 2015. The team coud not have done more for us, all we had to do is say what we wanted and they did it perfectly, even when I became stroppy due to be tierd they catered for everything I wanted, even moving times of things to fit in with what I wanted. The food was cooked perfecty, they allowd us to go off menu and pick out exactly what we wanted to eat for every course. The guests praised both the food and the service. We honestly could not of asked for more and would recomend them to everyone for any occasion. The main rooms have also just been redecorated and revampted they were stunning as are the grounds perfect for photos.

    « Not bad. »

Stopped here many times, the last of which was in the summer on a dinner bed & breakfast deal as a group of 8 including a young child and a toddler. Upon checkin with our kids we were advised we could simply wait until all the party arrived before booking our meal. The remaining 2 of our family arrived at 5.30 at which point we were informed the only spaces in the restaurant were at 8.30. This was far from ideal and I voiced my concearn but was told the bottom line was if we wanted to eat as a party of 8 it'd be 8.30..... We asked if we could simply eat in the bar instead & were offered £12 credit each (which would buy a burger..... thats it ) as opposed to the 3 course meal + wine we were due to recieve in the restaurant. Our food in the restaurant was okay, lots of things unavilable/sold out on the set menu. Unsuprisingly our kids were irritable & didn't eat much given they usually go to bed at 7pm - i got the impression we got what was left at the end of service & felt bad for stopping everyone getting home early although in fairness the waiting staff were polite enough. We were charged full price for our kids meals & soft Drinks and no offer was made to reimburse, discount or apologise given the circumstances. I guess this is why some people ferousiously comaplain about ANY minor thing (which I refuse to do) - often everyday guests can't be heard unless they are writing to the CEO. One of the bar staff was getting noticibly narked that one of our party kept ordering Coffees which was a shame and again, other people may would have cause to complain non stop about. Breakfast was okay, very little choice as far as continental goes & items regularly run out which guests have to ask staff about. The pool was great and staff really helpful with our kids. As a group we must have put at least £500 derwent manors way that night and despite the stay being Okay overall, little things or little gestures could have improved our experience a lot. Whats the old expression "shy bairns..."? Nevermind...

    « Excellent customer service »

4 adults and one 3 year old. We stayed in Rowan cottage in the hotel grounds. This was a three bedroom cottage which was immaculately clean with excellent décor. There were a few minor housekeeping problems on arrival which were rectified immediately by extremely helpful staff. The cottage was really worth a 4* rating. The only let down for us was the bar meals. Starters and mains were well presented but that is about all you could say for them. They really were not very good so much so that we did not eat there again

    « Tired Looking decor »

The hotel is up a long driveway which is in need of repair. Although the hotel is in open countryside there is no demarcation between land owned by Derwent hotel and the open countryside. It would have been far nicer had there been gardens. We had a suite with a balcony, but no balcony furniture. Our room was in need of updating and some of the carpets in public areas were a little threadbare. We have stayed at Best Western Hotels before but this one was disappointing, but it was handy for visiting Durham and surrounding areas.

« Could learn a lot about comfortable beds from Premier Inn »

Stayed here for a night as a short notice change of plan. Prices quoted in the website, the BW app and various other sites varied greatly but eventually managed to get a deal which seemed OK. Room was miles from Reception with a lot of steps. Food in bar ok (told no need to book but lucky to get a table). Beds the most uncomfortable and creaky we have come across in years. Not sure I would go back.

    « Excellent value »

Booked two nights dinner bed and breakfast. Excellent value at £169. Food was good and the service was friendly and helpful. The room was musty though - it looked like maybe there had been a leak further down the corridor (?).

    « A very good rural Hotel »

I have been here several times now, which in it's self must be some form of recognition, the Hotel is up a long private drive off the A68. Near Consett, and is surrounded by Northumberland !!. The room I had been allocated, was of a good size and had a KingSize bed and two singles. As I was on my own for one night I only had the chance to use one of them, which was comfortable and did what it said on the tin. There was also a full size Bathroom with a bath and shower over. There is a leisure center complex across the car park with a swimming pool, spa steam room, Etc. supported by it's own staff and some modern clean changing rooms. I had a meal and drink in the Bar area, known as the Grouse and Claret, which is a warm and friendly area, with an open fire in one corner, however the whole room is pleasant. I chose Steak as my main course, and this was cooked to my liking with all the appropriate accessories. The staff were pleasant and efficient, although the barman appeared to be run off his feet and had to keep apologising for keeping his customers waiting. Breakfast was in the main restaurant and consisted of a help you self buffet for the usual fruit, cereal toast Etc. With the cooked breakfast being cooked to order. All in all an Very Good Hotel, to which I will return.

    « Excellent Hotel »

My wife & I have just spent a night at the hotel DB&B and cannot fault anything at the hotel. The staff are friendly helpful particularly the staff in the restaurant, food at dinner & breakfast first class. The room was comfortable, clean, bit of an old fashioned TV but it worked. If you are in and around this area Looking for accommodation I can certainly recommend The Derwent Manor.

« A lot of good points, however.... »

This hotel was in a lovely location, the hotel room was large although extremely dated, the bed constantly rolled away from the wall and the mattress was too soft for our liking, however, the staff were extremely polite and friendly. We stayed for two nights on 30th and 31st October doing a 'murder mystery' on the Halloween night. On the first night we dined in the restaurant, the food was extremely flavoursome and filling and the wine was chilled perfectly. On the second night we had an abysmally bland soup, over cooked chicken main meal and rubbery profiteroles (some vile fruity cream filling instead of fresh cream and chocolate) served during the equally awful 'Murder mystery' (the mystery being, what the heck is this excuse of poor acting and dull narration). Had the murder mystery actaully been, well, a murder mystery (honestly, my 3 daughters school plays have more depth to them) and the food lived up to the previous nights standards my review would have been at least a 4*, but unfortunately this second night ruined what was supposed to be a wonderful weekend away.

Beautifull hotel, great leisure facilities, amazing food.It was the little things that made the difference.A bottle of champagne in the room on our arrival as it was our anniversary, but it was the staff at this hotel that made our break what it was.Always smiling, nothing was too much trouble, polite and attentive without being over powering they really are a credit to this hotel.Treat them well they are worth their weight in gold,oh and don't forget their Christmas bonus I want to see them all when we return. Many thanks for an amazing break

    « Disappointing Service »

We booked a cottage for 7 nights & a room in the Hotel for 1 night due to needing to be residents in England in order to get married in England next year. (We are English but currently live in Scotland). We would have booked 8 nights in the cottage but the hotel wanted to charge us 80% of a weeks booking fee for 1 extra night. Two months ago before I made the booking I confirmed with a member of staff on the telephone that the hotel would provide a letter stating we had been guests at the Hotel as required by the Registrars office. On arriving at the hotel we were greated by a friendly receptionist who stated we could stay in the cottage for the 8th night of our visit if no one else booked into it before then as this would save the hotel servicing a bedroom & us the inconvenience of moving for 1 night. Towards the end of our 8 nights I went over to reception to enquire as to whether we could remain in the cottage for the 8th night & I was informed by a different receptionist in a very unpleasant manner that the cottage had now been booked & we would have to move. That was fine as that had always been a possibility. I then also enquired about our letter confirming our 8 night stay for the Registrar to be told that it would not be possible to provide us with this despite previous confirmation that this would not be a problem. My Partner went over to reception following evening, the same unpleasant receptionist was on duty again & she stated that we could not have a letter. We then received a phone call from a different person stating that the Managing Director was not willing to provide a letter. When I asked why she said "because it has never been done before". I asked if we could meet with the Managing Director to discuss this as it does not seem like an unreasonable request & she said she that she didn't know when he would be available. We then emailed the Managing Director twice with no response. I have just been down to reception to enquire about a piece of lost property in the cottage that we had occupied to be told that it is empty tonight! This being our 8th night & the night we had asked if we could remain in the cottage but were told we couldn't because it was booked! We are feeling very let down by the hotel at what should be an exciting time for us & we are worried about our appointment with the Registrar in the morning & what this will mean for our wedding. I met my partner at the Derwent Manor when I was a Member of the Leisure Club & have visited it many times.

« Good value for money »

Booked as part of a package this two night stay enabled us to explore the area and visit Beamish Museum.... which is a must! I will get the negatives out of the way first. The room was spacious with two double beds and with the en-suite a little dated, the TV was old fashioned and had incomprehensible operating instructions, mentioned by several other guests. However when mentioned to the staff they indicated the rooms were to be upgraded in the very near future. There did seem to be a lot of new refurbishment and an ongoing improvement program to many parts of the hotel. The 'Bar' area was a cut above the standard hotel lounge more like a cozy country pub the restaurant area was lovely and intimate and the staff were wonderful and helpful. The food in the evening was well cooked and presented but the breakfast (Buffet style) was a bit hit and miss but still acceptable. We had two sessions in the pool / sauna which appears to be a fairly recent building. Again the staff were brilliant everything clean tidy and well organised couldn't fault it. All in all if they sort out the ridiculous TV we would not have any hesitation of staying here again or recommending it to others. Enjoy your stay!

« 2 night stay on a walking break in the area »

Check in was simple enough, even though I had provided the Groupon voucher to the email address I was asked to, I was still asked for the groupon voucher! The included 3 course meal was delightful, but the breakfast used slightly cheaper ingredients. The overall quality of the room was good, not brilliant, but acceptable. We were told the rooms had been recently refurbished, but looking at the quality of the grouting in the bathroom and the general quality of finish, it was either done very quickly or cheaply. The bedroom was a little dark and with nowhere for my wife to dry her hair where there was any light source near a mirror. The room was quiet and had some interesting views over the derwent valley and surrounding coutryside, although it was mainly foggy for the duration our stay. Checkout times are advertised as 11:00am, so when on the morning of checkout, housekeeping staff were waiting outside our rooms upon our return from breakfast just after 09:30 am, we felt a little pressed and as a consequence forgot to take with us the orthopaedic pillow that I use due to a spinal injury, I have called the hotel, but they cannot find a large memory foam pillow that was left by a guest a week ago. The only reason I need to find it is that when going to purchase a replacement they have been discontinued. I am not happy with the treatment or the lack of concern since reporting it.

stayed here for three nights.the food, staff and location are excellent.the only slight drawback and reason i rate the hotel very good instead of excellent is that some of the fixtures, furnishings in our room were a little worn and dated.that said it all worked and the hotel is being refurbished at the moment so when we stay again next year i have a feeling its going to get an excellent mark.the food was really very good both at breakfast and dinner.every member of staff we came into contact with were both friendly and helpfull and we really enjoyed our stay here..

« 2 Night stay via Groupon deal. »

Booked a deal with Groupon for a 2 night stay, inc bottle of wine, 3 course meal & full English breakfast. Arrived on 28th October & we were checked in quickly, provided with all the information we needed & booked our evening meal for 8pm in the 'Grand Hall'.The bottle of wine was waiting in our room, which itself was really nice & clean & a decent size. Coffee & tea was provided, along with all the usual things you expect, the only negative thing, which isn't a complaint was the very old TV, not seen 1 of those for a while! Evening meal on both nights was a lovely 3 course , supplements were charged if you chose certain things, but our food was gorgeous & all the staff were really nice, breakfast was served in a different hall & was a full English buffet style which certainly wasn't going to leave you hungry & again was really nice, coffee & tea was brought to your table. We used the pool & sauna, which we had to ourselves for the majority of the time, the views from the spa are pretty amazing & relaxing. In short this hotel was absolutely brilliant, the staff, food, facilities & location will not disappoint you & I would happily go back anytime.

    « Wonderful! »

My daughter and I have stayed here on two occasions and can't wait to go back. While we originally booked for the leisure facilities (hot tub, pool and sauna- the leisure complex is directly across and to the left of the hotel entrance) the rest of the hotel doesn't disappoint. On both occasions our room was large and immaculately clean and each of the beds was a double. Still on the beds, they have to be the most comfortable I have ever slept in. The staff are efficient, friendly and can't do enough for you. The first time we stayed, breakfast was served at table but the second was buffet style. The food is superb, fresh, locally sourced produce and well cooked. We treated ourselves to breakfast in bed one day and there was enough food to feed an army. At night, we ate in the pub which was very good on our first stay, but on the second I ordered lamb and it was raw. In fairness, the food is usually spot on. This hotel is a gem!

The staff at this hotel were fantastic, very customer focussed and nothing was a problem. The care to meet our needs was outstanding. we travelled with two adults, three children and a dog. Not many places accommodate so many, but this hotel was amazing. So pleased we chose it and can't wait to return.

« long weekend away for the wife's birthday »

We have visited this hotel several times and use it as our base when visiting the north east, it is ideally situated for visiting all the attractions like Durham cathedral, Hadrian's Wall and Beamish. We have got to know the staff very well at the hotel, and they are all very helpful and friendly, they make you feel very welcome when you stay.My children love the girls on reception especially Ashleigh and Hannah. I would like to say a big thank you to Amy for putting a bottle of wine and a box of chocolate in our room for my wife's birthday. Rooms are very good in the hotel, we normally have a two bedroom suite which has amazing views overlooking the fields. All rooms have free wifi and all the usual free items like tea, coffee and toiletries. We had dinner in the restaurant each night whilst we stayed, food was always very nice, hot and very appetising. Service was excellent in the restaurant, they even managed to bring a cake with candles on for my wife, who was celebrating her birthday. Breakfast in the hotel is very good, self-service with lots to choose from. The hotel has a lot to offer and there's plenty to do for the children. The bar has a pool table and the hotel also has an indoor heated pool which the children loved. The lady who works in the pool,Chrissy is a fabulous host and great with the children. I would recommend this hotel to all my friends and family and we look forward to visiting again soon.

    « Lovely! »

Great value for money, got through groupon. The hotel is lovely, the areas that have been refurbished are beautiful. Majority of staff are pleasant, in particular Karen in the bar, she was so nice and lovely with our kids! The food in the restaurant was amazing and thought it would be the same in the bar, but unfortunately it was no where near as good, we were told that it is a different chef for the bar food, and you could tell, it was awful. The only other down side was the beds were too soft, but that's personal preference and the room needed a refurb, but I believe they are being done in January. Would definitely return here.

« Numerous facilities and excellent staff »

This was my second visit - my first was in June 2013. Myself and a friend stayed for 2 nights/3 days (Wed-Fri) in late October. Our stay overlapped with school half-term. We had the first night in room 242 (twin) and the second night in room 123 (twin). Pros: -Large car park. Includes disabled parking area and an electric car charging point. -Check in - 3pm onwards. -Friendly, hardworking and locally employed staff. Amy on Reception and Michelle in the restaurant/breakfast were exceptional and are a credit to the company. -Our deal included two free tickets to the Beamish Open Air Museum. We collected them from Reception. -Free WiFi. Get login/password from slips of paper on Reception. I picked up a signal in Reception and my room. It was fast enough for web browsing, Facebook, Twitter. I could also get 3 bars/3G with Three on my iPhone. -Guest lift. -Reception includes seating area, knight in armour!, numerous local attraction leaflets, hotel wedding poster, hotel Christmas/New Year leaflet, computer, telephone, newspaper (Durham Times). -Room 242: Twin double beds with padded headboard, three bedside tables, two bedside lamps, telephone. Two upholstered chairs. Curtains & net curtains. Low glass-topped table with tea/coffee making facilities. Floor lamp. TV. Glass-topped writing/makeup table with three drawers, mirror and stool. Hair dryer. Guest Directory. Suitcase stand with two drawers. Open hanging area. Iron/ironing board. En suite bathroom with shower-bath. -Room 123 as above, minus low glass-topped table, but hanging area has sliding doors. It was also much quieter and had newer mattresses. -Dinner served in the Guinevere Restaurant. On the first night I had starters: prawn cocktail; mains: Ligurian style chicken; desserts: sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream. Dinner (7pm-9:15pm, 8:45pm Sundays). A section of the restaurant has already been refurbished, but the remainder is due to be refurbished and extended in January 2016. -My breakfast served in Grand Hall during my stay, as the hotel was full. Breakfast (Mon-Fri 7am-9:30am, Sat-Sun 8am-10am). -Our room rate included 2x breakfasts (normally £12 pp) and 2x three-course meals (normally £22 pp). -Grouse and Claret Bar - open 11am-11pm. Contains a pool table and a TV showing Sky Sports. -Newspapers (chargeable) delivered to room on request. -Fitness centre located in separate building a short walk across the car park from the hotel. Take a £1 coin for the locker. Pool with jacuzzi and sauna at ground level. Under 16's can use the pool up to 6pm each day. Gym upstairs with cardio equipment (includes 1x cycle machine, 1x recumbent cycle machine, 3x treadmills, 2x cross-trainers, 1x step machine, 1x Concept 2 PM3 rowing machine) and weights equipment (includes Precor fixed weights machines, dumb bells), plus 2x benches, 1x step, 2x sit-up bars & mats and punch bag. (NB. Gym refurbishment from October to early November in readiness for new equipment to be installed in early December 2015. Revamp includes new flooring, new TVs, mirrored wall and new gym equipment 'replacing all of the current equipment'). -Water in the hotel comes from a natural spring and is drinkable. -Check out - 11am. -Six self-catering cottages. Cons: -Steep driveway to hotel needs resurfacing as some sections heavily rutted. -Room 242 - no fridge. -Room 242 - Philips 21-inch CRT TV with Freeview box (2 remote controls!) - 15-20 years old - faulty - switched off after approximately 5 minutes viewing, very annoying. -Room 242 - mattress - both worn out - lumpy, squeaky and uncomfortable. Our first nights sleep was affected. -Room 242 - occasional noise from adjacent room and room doors slamming shut in corridor. (NB. I understand the room will be revamped next year (2016)). Info: Hotel opened in 1989. The site was originally a farm owned by the grandfather of actor/comedian Rowan Atkinson. There's a 'Rowan Cottage' on the site. Tips: -Book table reservations in advance, as time slots book up fast. -Reception has free photocopied instructions for two circular walks (2hrs/3.5miles and 3-4hrs/7.5 miles) from nearby Allensford. -There's a retail park (opened in 2012) which includes a Morrisons supermarket (with in-house cafe and a petrol station), Aldi, KFC, McDonalds (Tesco supermarket currently being built) approx 10 minutes drive away in Consett. « What I thought »

Impressive from outside. Clean and comfortable inside but dated décor. Exceptional staff who were all helpful, friendly and skilled. Old, useless TV in our room. Shower dated. Bed lovely and comfy. Overall prices of drinks expensive for a 3 star hotel.

    « good in parts »

The good included two double beds in large twin room, friendly welcoming staff and nice dining rooms with fresh linen. We went on a 'deal' which was ok value for money but certain aspects would not draw us back, especially at full price. These included the following: although the quality of the food both at dinner and breakfast was good, the cooking let down the meals which tended to be overcooked and dry and left too long on the pass. The service was very variable and some staff appeared to have little training in restaurant service. The bedrooms needed updating especially decor and ancient television. All in all a mixed stay.

    « Great Deal here »

Saw this hotel on Classic Britain site with a DB&B and wine offer and decided to treat ourselves as we were visiting Beamish (25mins drive away) There was plenty of parking and the surrounding area looked nice. The hotel is impressive from the outside and the dining room and Great Hall are too. We had a bit of a wait to check in as family in front took forever but not the receptionists fault. The receptionist was pleasant and efficient and explained everything about our deal and gave us a voucher for our wine. Our room was large and comfortable but we did have to put the extra heater on, that was sitting there to heat up the room. The swimming pool was up the road a bit so I didn't bother going to check it out . Dinner was lovely, couldn't fault it at all and the wine was a nice one too. The waiting staff were lovely and friendly. The buffet breakfast was very good but the waiter forgot to tell us we had to order fried/poached eggs if we wanted them and we only realised after getting our food. I was happy with the scrambled but my husband missed his fried egg! I did have problems with the internet disconnecting but I assume it is to do with the area the hotel is in. There are walks around the hotel but we didn't have time to do them - maybe next time! Would definitely return if we got a reasonable price.

    « Good value rooms »

Rooms were good value. The swimming pool and gym was very basic. They appeared to struggle with the volume of people at breakfast time, although the quality of the breakfast and the setting of the great hall was spectacular. We couldn't eat in the restaurant during our stay because it was always fully booked so we ate from the bar menu. This was ok.

We did an overnighter at this hotel on an offer and could not fault it. All the staff were friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was fantastic throughout. The room was large with all that we needed perhaps the decor is a little dated but that added to the charm of the oldy-worldiness (if that's a word!) of the hotel. Yes the gym is undergoing renovation (it happens) but that didnt spoil our use of it and the pool/spa was excellent though small but we were lucky that it was nice and quiet and a bonus to have on site. We enjoyed it so much as soon as we were home we booked another overnight stay for november - cant wait to go back. Thank you Derwent Manor.

    « A very enjoyable stay! »

A really good couple of days. We stayed in the annex part of the hotel, the room was well decorated and the beds comfy. The shower room was small but adequate only thing sink was very tiny and had a mirrored cabinet above it so kept knocking my head when using it. The staff are all really friendly and very helpful. The food was great evening meals and breakfast you couldn't have asked for better. The pool spa and gym to are a great asset to the hotel. I will definitely recommend this hotel to my friends and family.

    « Really charming staff!! »

Like many people, it seemed, we were on a 'deal'; ours being £89 per night DBB with a bottle of house wine at dinner, booked through easy-breaks.com. We were also supposed to have a bowl of soup on arrival but that was nowhere to be seen - not a problem. Our ground floor room was large and clean, overlooking the surrounding countryside. The hotel offers free wi-fi which we found to be rather 'fragile', needing me to log in each time we wanted to go on-line. The food, both at dinner and breakfast, was very good and the house rose wine was very drinkable. My wife used the swimming pool and found it to be very clean and well equipped, if rather small. Only downside is having to go outside the hotel building and across the car park to reach the spa building. The real big plus point at the hotel is the staff; from the ladies on reception to those in the restaurant they were all very pleasant, helpful and charming! nothing seemed to be too much trouble. It's unfair to single anyone out really, but Donna in the restaurant does deserve special praise - thanks Donna! The hotel is in a lovely part of the counryside and would be very happy to stay there again. The owners are, apparently, embarking on a rolling programme of hotel refurbishment which should make it even more comfortable and welcoming. Thank you!

« Hidden gem in the heart of the country side »

We stayed here on Thursday night for my partners birthday and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We got a deal through groupon for a 3 course meal, wine, bed and breakfast so thought we'd would try the hotel and we're not disappointed. Such a hidden gem of a hotel in a beautiful setting. We had a bottle of wine in our room on arrival as expected. Then we went down for a swim and sauna in the little spa and was lovely. Wasn't that busy when we went but it was a Thursday night so certainly not overcrowded. Then we got ready and went for a drink in the bath which was a lovely setting. Followed by a gorgeous meal in the restaurant and excellent service. Breakfast the following morning was a great selection too. Will definitely be coming back to stay again.

    « Nice 1 night stay »

Stayed here for 1 night. The rooms have nice big comfy beds and are equipped with iron, ironing board and hairdryer. However these rooms are very dated; wallpaper peeling, water marks, cobwebs, dirty walls, damaged furniture. Also the TV is very small on a very low stand so you can't see the TV from the bed and the thermostat and heating doesn't work in room so it was very cold. The restaurant was very nice, service was excellent and very fast and the food was lovely for the evening meal. Lots of choice at breakfast however could of been a bit hotter. Gym area is undergoing construction and looks very messy at the moment. Majority of the machines are damaged in some way and the gym desperately needs some air con or fans up there. They have nice clean pool and sauna area which was great to enjoy.

    « Peaceful location »

On arrival we were upgraded...great! But to a cottage...even better, thanks. Lovely and clean. Bar staff very friendly and helpful. Bar meal was excellent. Could not fault you thanks. Swimming pool too if I had known would have brought my costume. Scenery around hotel beautiful. Plenty of car parking space. Safe to leave our motorbike too. Must be great on summer nights with decking outside .

    « going backwards »

stayed 1 night and was quite disappointed. This Hotel was a favorite of mine but appears to have stagnated. The staff are not as helpful and the rooms need a little TLC, even the breakfast is a let down, some thing I never thought I would say .

« Afternoon Tea for Three »

We visited here on Sunday 18th October. The waiting staff were very pleasant and chatty. The afternoon tea was the poorest we've every had and more expensive than other local hotels; 1. Sandwiches, 4 quarters .... plain ham x 2, egg mayo & cheese and tomato - very bland and not taste. 2. Mini cakes - chocolate eclairs, Victoria sponge and peach melba! 3. plain scones with jam & cream. I wouldn't recommend this place for afternoon tea, it was poor and very over-priced for what they offered. I've had mixed reviews, however, I believe in first hand experience and this wasn't a great eating experience, despite beautiful surroundings.

« Hotel brilliant sadly let down by the food »

The hotel was brilliant, however the food was not. We had a lovely relaxing stay in this beautiful hotel in the middle of a lovely part of the countryside - all perfect. Sadly the food was a big let down.

    « Great stay »

I spent a night here when working in the area. On arrival i was very happy to be given a room upgrade to a recently updated cottage room. The room was beautiful, very comfortable and has been upgraded to a very high standard. My only fault would be there's no mirror in the room apart from the bathroom cabinet. I had a lovely meal in the bar and also a good breakfast in the morning. The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable about the surrounding area. I heard a few of them advising other guests who were deciding where to go for the day. They really seemed interested in the guests.

« Great value really lovely hotel »

We booked this hotel last minute mainly due to its location , close to Hexham and set in beautiful countryside. It was a gem of a place! Very comfortable and relaxing.nothing was too much trouble for the excellent , friendly team who all seemed happy in their work. As a retired travel professional who has stayed in some amazing places all over the world, I would say this hotel rates very highly. The food was brilliant, pool with sauna and hot tub in a separate building had really superb views. We also ate in the pub which was equally as good. Great hotel for a special function or wedding. Our room was a little on small side as was ensuite but for two nights it wasn't a problem. We loved the homely feel and would recommend for anyone wanting to explore the area by car.Corbridge and Hexham 10 mins away Alnwick Castle and Gardens 45 mins by car.

    « Lovely hotel »

We returned to this hotel after a previous visit in 2012 and find it hard to find fault with anything. The hotel is set in a quiet country location giving you easy access to Durham, Hexham and Newcastle. Dinner was excellent and well presented. The restaurant staff were very attentive with all of our party's dietary requirements catered for. Customer service was second to none throughout the hotel. I made a visit to the spa which was enjoyable and managed to swim quite a few lengths before the pool got busy. The pool is quite small but adequate and is kept to a high standard by the hard working staff. The bedrooms were very comfortable and kept spotless. I intend to return to this hotel again and still can't believe the price we paid (£120 per couple including dinner, bed and breakfast) which was great value for money.

    « Great stay »

My wife and | stayed in the hotel on Tuesday 6th and Wednesday 7th October. We were on a deal which included a 3 course meal on the first night. Words surpass me, but in a nutshell the food was fantastic and very 'creative'. Worthy of a 'starred' restaurant anywhere. Normally it would cost £22 per head which is unbelievably good value. The reception staff were very friendly and attentive throughout the stay as well as the 'waiting staff' who couldn't have been more helpful. Okay now for the plaudits. the receptionist on duty Wednesday afternoon - a special thanks for helping me print my voucher for another Best Western hotel the following night. The waitress who had found my wife's 'dropped' lipstick from the previous night and kept it safe until the following morning at breakfast and finally the 'new waitress' working in the bar where we eat on the second night who had only just started doing the job having previously worked as a chamber maid. She had made the step-up and was loving it. She couldn't have been more helpful fetching menu's from the restaurant and looking after us - a real asset. So to the manager my wife and at nearly 60 years of age are seasoned travellers from America to Africa to the Indian sub-continent, but your staff looked happy in their work and made us feel very welcome and as good as any we have encountered on our travels so far so hang on them! Sorry I can't remember their names, but they will know who they are.

« Comfortable and relaxing hotel. »

We have just returned from a two night stay at the hotel which I found be comfortable and relaxing. Our room was large with two double beds. It was clean and comfortable and was cleaned every day. The bathroom was clean with a shower over the bath. There is a swimming pool and gym attached to the hotel. It was free to use and towels were provided free of charge. The gym appeared to be well equipped and there was a member of staff on duty throughout the day. All of the staff at the hotel were friendly, helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. One of our party had special dietary needs and staff in the restaurant could not have been more helpful preparing a starter, main course and dessert which were not on the menu. We ate at the hotel both nights and we found the choice and quality of the meals to be very good. There is also a large bar at the hotel. The location of the hotel is fairly isolated and a car is needed as there are no shops etc within walking distance. I would definitely recommend this hotel, especially for couples.

« Beautiful venue, can't wait to get married here! »

As we're getting married here next year we thought we'd sample the food whilst visiting for a wedding fayre. We sampled the Sunday carvery which we ate in the Guinevere restaurant located on the first floor. The restaurant like all the areas of the hotel is a lovely space with wooden beams and a gorgeous fireplace. Despite not having a booking we were seated quickly and our drinks order taken. You can opt for just a main course or add a starter and or a desert for a set price. I'm glad we chose to just have the main course as our eyes were too big for bellies and after a heaped plate from the carvery there was definitely no room for desert. We both had the pork which was tasty and there was plenty of choice when it came to vegetables. My only niggle was the roast potatoes which weren't cooked enough for our liking. As part of the wedding fayre we got a chance to view one of the cottages opposite the hotel which was really nicely done out and the bridal suite was absolutely stunning. We left full and happy and can't wait until it's time to hold our wedding at Derwent Manor!

« Good place to stay »

Really nice hotel with a good bar area. Bedrooms are of a good size. Bathrooms average but with no magnified make up/ shaving mirror. Also annoyingly the metal door stop in the bathroom is situated in front of the wash basin. Ideal if you like stubbing your toe!! Breakfast and dinner have a good variety of food as well as good quality. At the Spa, the swimming pool is small, and it also has a sauna and Jacuzzi. The hotel is a bit isolated, (hence the poor Wi-Fi) but with a car its location is ideal. Worth a visit.

    « Another triumph »

So just back from our 5th visit to the derwent . We were on a groupon so had a great deal , dinner , bed breakfast and bottle of wine ( red ! Which was exchanged for white without a problem in the bar ) . There have been lots of improvements since we were last there and things seem to be moving quickly . A vast improvement in service , food and overall ambiance since we first went two years ago . We had one of the new refurbished rooms across from the main building which was beautifully finished off with super comfy bed . The only downside is the lack of lighting , especially above the mirror ., and the size of the shower ! Shame they had not used a little more of the space to create a larger shower room but that did not spoil anything for us . The 3 course meal in the evening was fabulous and much higher standard than previously ( pat on the back for the chef ) the waiting staff were attentive but not intrusive . Breakfast was just as good . The pool area was quiet when we were in which was great . Perhaps you may have gathered by now we had a lovely time . Well done the Derwent ! Look forward to the next time

    « What a great stay. »

This hotel more and met our expectations, we stayed for two nights on a dinner, bed and breakfast break. The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, our room was amazing, huge, very comfortable bed and with wonderful views from the windows. The food was amazing, three courses, all very good and a great breakfast. The pool is small, but clean and warm, there is also a Jacuzzi which looks out across the moors. Only downside is that there are a lot of stairs, there is a lift, but that didn't seem to help, it did not cause us a problem, but some people might find it daunting. Would definitely recommend and really hope to return in the future.
