The Winchester Royal Hotel, BW Premier Collection® perfectly placed in the heart of Winchester City Center itself, is ideal for short breaks, business trips and family stays. We have 85 delightfully decorated bedrooms to choose from, and we are the only hotel in the city center to have a stunning walled garden within our grounds, perfect for summer dining or enjoying afternoon tea. Our location and character make for a royally relaxing getaway whenever you visit. A former Bishop's residence and later a convent, the main part of the building dates back over 400 years and has been welcoming guests with open arms for over 150 years. We have probably the best location in Winchester, if we do say so ourselves. That secret garden offers peace and tranquility just two minutes from the main town center, so you will be nestled away from the hustle and bustle of Hampshire while close enough to enjoy all it has to offer. Close to the New Forest for cycling, with Peppa Pig World at Paultons Family Theme Park less than 20 minutes away, the whole family can enjoy each others company in wonderful surroundings. There is lots of history for your little maids and knights to discover too, with Winchester being the home to King Arthur and his legendary Knights of the Round Table.

    « Lovely stay »

The staff were very helpful and friendly. We had a lovely room and really comfortable. The food in the restaurant was and breakfast as well. It is in an excellent location to walk into the city. The only slight drawback is the parking situation and is a bit of a lottery if you can get into the car park.

« We had a couple of days in Winchester to celebrate my husbands birthday. »

Lovely hotel, full of history but nicely updated. Bedroom was huge with lovely comfy bed. So good to have a really powerful shower. Breakfast was great with very good choice of both hot and cold food. Staff lovely. Will definitely be recommending this hotel to friends and look forward to visiting again.

    « Annivversay Stay »

A splendid hotel in a very historic building. Right in the centre of town for the cathedral and shops. Rooms a bit basic but adequate enough, a sort of Premier Inn with character and charm. Staff very helpful and warm. It is worth paying for a room in the Garden block but try and get one as far down the corridor as possible. There are a plethora of fire doors at the start which apparently bang all the time, and in the summer there would be noise from the patrons on the patio. Food was excellent. We had a most enjoyable time and would return again.

« Great weekend in Winchester »

Recommend this hotel - you might need to leave a window open though as it was incredibly hot when we were there. Staff very friendly and helpful though - lady on reception even loaned me her personal phone charger! Great location and very quiet even though very central

« Disappointing event at The Winchester Royal Hotel »

We attended the Winchester Royal Hotel as part of an organised event, (a family birthday with about 30 people attending), and stayed for the night with breakfast in the morning. The hotel is centrally located in Winchester but, unfortunately, it was let down by a couple of points. The food that had been pre-ordered for the event did not turn up as was agreed, (plain chicken instead of chicken satay, plain sausages instead of honey glazed etc.). The breakfast was not very appetising and quite plain and lacked choice. The other surprise was on checking out - when I queried the additional £10 on the bill I was told it was for car parking! Apparently if you park your car in the hotel car park when staying at the hotel they charge you an extra £10 for the privilege! This is the first time I have been charged for car parking at a hotel.

    « winchester royal hotel »

this is a lovely hotel with character and super garden. It is well positioned near to train station, high street and cathedral in pleasant quiet road. All staff were friendly and helpful. The room was spotlessly clean and bed comfortable. The food in the restaurant both dinner and breakfast was excellent. We booked one night bed, dinner, breakfast break (for our trip to xmas market) - this was excellent value. We very much enjoyed our stay and will definitely recommend to others.

    « Top mini break »

Our stay at this hotel was really delightful, the hotel is well run and very professional in all departments. The staff were very happy to help in any way they could and seemed to be very happy in their work. The restaurant was comfortable and the food was very well presented and at a very reasonable price. Winchester itself was a joy with so much to do and see.

« Really, You don't have a needle and thread? »

What sort of hotel doesn't have a needle and thread...a bad one! This place is nice if a little dated but the rooms are ludicrously hot and the place feels unorganised. Fine if your here for the weekend with friends or family. If you're on business don't bother. Find a local premier or travel inn. They at least will understand that people occasionally need simple things while they're staying away. They are also less likely to send you on a half hour round trip to find the things that come as standard in any other hotel in the rest of the world. Your doing okay but seriously...try harder!

    « Christmas break 2016 »

We stayed at this hotel for two nights, taking advantage of the Autumn Break deal.,which was very good value for money. The hotel is perfectly situated in a quiet road just a few minutes walk from the cathedral, the town and in the other direction the railway station. The hotel looks nothing in particular from the outside but once you step inside you can see the beauty of the building, with its quirky rooms and beautiful additions like the Garden restaurant overlooking the pretty grounds. The service and the welcome that we received were excellent,I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will definitely be returning.

    « . »

Nice hotel, good location! The only not good things is that after paying extra for 1 night car park, 2 breakfast, a bottle of champagne and cake for my white birthday they ask me to pay 8 more pound for Kipling the car into the car park ( it was not full) for few hours more after check out. It is not about money but only about flexibility! So, do not expect anything from them..... just pay for what you need!

    « Welcoming »

A nice hotel in a nice town centre location near to Cathedral, river, street market & shops etc. Can't understand anyone having complaints about this hotel - a comfortable atmosphere with lovely garden view from restaurant & bar. Breakfast & Evening Meals both good with very pleasant service. All staff very friendly & helpful (blonde lady receptionist very patient even with trivial requests!).Enjoyable stay.

    « A lovely stay »

A warm, spacious comfortable room and quiet although in the centre of the city. I have already written and indicated how good this hotel is and how much we enjoyed our stay. I do not intend to add to it just to satisfy trip advisor.

    « Family Birthday Party »

The party was well catered for, nicely private and most enjoyable. We spent the night before and the night of the party in the hotel which fulfilled all our requirements. Thank you for looking after s so well.

    « Fabulous »

The nicest hotel I have ever stayed in. Clean, luxurious and in a perfect location. Worth every penny! Breakfast in the morning was just superb with plenty of choice and really set us up for the day ahead. Tea, coffee, fresh juices, cold meats and cheeses, fruit, cereal, toast and a choice of hot breakfast items available to everyone. Was delicious!

    « Vrey enjoyable »

Fantastic location - of course, what goes with that is limited parking. We did eventually find the closest Multistorey car park - but they could provide some slightly clearer instructions - although Winchester is a bit of nightmare for the motorist with a doozy of a one way system. However, that means on the plus side it is a much better experience when you walk around the city. Room a decent size with a nice table and chairs if you fancy eating in the room. Superb towels. Huge bed. Good quality breakfast with fresh bread and toasting facilities. Also - the first place I've staying in for ages with good proper size glasses for juice - rather than those thimbles that most other hotels seem to use. Didn't use the restaurant in the evening but what I saw when I walked past on my way out looked good. Everything (shops, bars, restaurants) within easy reach. Parking tip - there are 2 car parks, one in Parchment Street (the turning before the street the hotel is in). That was not full the entire time of our visit. If both car parks are full - drop your luggage off and park in the Tower Street car park. Free after 6:00pm and only £8 all day. You can pay from the comfort of your bed by phone too so no rushing to get up early and put a ticket in. Definitely stay here again.

« Catch Up with Friends »

Overall this was a pleasant hotel with warm and friendly staff who seemed very pleased to serve you. It has been recently refurbished in pleasant pastel colours, spacious rooms with en suite bathroom, plenty of hot water and lovely fluffy white towels. Good quality toiletries provided, very clean rooms and spacious and light. Restaurant offers, Conservatory are, or solid walled room all very nice.

    5
    « very pleasant »

Winchester has a lot of through traffic round the town and this hotel is tucked away in a quiet area (which is a bit of a walk form the station). Rooms are (mainly?) in a more modern annexe that while it looks rather dated does the job. Rooms are well equipped, comfortable and above all quiet. Dinner was superb as was the breakfast. I can't it.

« Great, could be suoerb »

This place ticks a lot of boxes. The location is superb. So is the building. The rooms are good (wi the occasional boo boo - see below). The decor is mostly good as well. The details, however, are a little squiffy. In the time that I was there I called reception seven times and not once was the phone picked up until I called the external number through to reception, and what do you know? It contacted immediately. The public areas are pleasant without being remarkable. Which is odd considering the antiquity of the building. We were promised (and reserved, and paid for) a room that overlooked the garden, whereas in fact what we got was a rather less then divine view of the car park. The room we had was very nice although God help you if you are over six foot as I almost cracked my head open squeezing under the low lintel and down the stairs of the Jane Austen suite. That said the room, decor and bathroom (a divine shower) were excellent. When I asked the receptionist if she could have our bags brought down, she acted like I had asked her to carry my child. Again, I don't get the impression that this place is terribly customer service oriented. I did like the hotel overall - it is the best I have stayed in so far in Winchester.

    « A long weekend »

A group of us visited the hotel for a weekend break. It's a nice hotel in a good central location. Very nice breakfast. Bar food taken in the lounge was good but the staff were very slow clearing away the plates, etc. I was concerned that on two consecutive days my room key card failed and had to be reset in reception, but they only asked for the room number. Not proof of ID or even a name to check it was my room! The bedroom was comfortable but apart from a towel rail there was no heating in the bathroom. If I visit Winchester again I would be happy to stay here again.

« Visit to the Christmas market »

Lovely hotel. Very central. I stayed in a feature room. Very tastefully decorated. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hotel has a car park with an overnight charge of £10. Food in the restaurant was extremely good value and delicious. Would stay again and recommending anyone wanting to be central.

« Perfect location for xmas market »

We stayed here two nights for the opening weekend of Winchester Christmas market and the hotel was great. Lovely rooms, breakfast spot on, location ideal. The staff were very helpful and for an old building it didn't look as though it needs any work done to it.

Very nice hotel and central to Winchester. Great location for shopping and Christmas Market. Stayed with family girls weekend away. Rooms very nice and staff great. Parking available although spaces can be limited we did all manage to park. Ate in restaurant food really nice. I would recommend and stay again.

« Peaceful and so central. »

A welcome peaceful break with very friendly staff.Excellent staff in the restaurant and good chefs It was noticed that glueton free is catered for at breakfast and throughout the day.Good clean rooms .Excellent central position in Winchester. However the local traffic is very hectic at festival times.Reception needs a little help.

« Not as impressive as first visit! »

We have come to Winchester every year for 5 or 6 years now. We were very impressed with this hotel the first time as I think I reviewed on that occasion. The second time we had to get staff to let us in to our room every time we wanted to get in as the card key locks all over the hotel weren't working - a bit of a pain, but not a huge problem. Next time there was a large wedding party that we weren't told about at booking or on arrival & service suffered greatly on this occasion & breakfast was a disaster, having to wait 30 minutes for a table & then little choice left & that was mainly cold!! Our daughter & her boyfriend stayed after that & the hotels policy of 'pre authorisation' blocked her debit card for 7 days even though she offered to fully pay on arrival, leaving her with very little cash for their stay!!!! This time, our booking was 'cancelled' & not by us I may add - this led to a lengthy booking in period which although rectified eventually, detracted somewhat from our 'relaxing' weekend & executive room facilities were missing & only arrived on the second day after we mentioned it!!! Room was up to the usual clean standard, nice bed & linen etc. a nice quality feel about it all. As others mention on TA, the doors are quite noisy in corridors in main & garden buildings - soft closers would be a good investment here!!! Breakfast was 'ok' but had better many times in many places. A shame really as we really were quite impressed on our first stay here, definitely gone downhill somewhat. We love Winchester & the Christmas market at the Cathedral is really nice! But as far the Royal is concerned, I think it's time for a change next year!!!

    « Could be better »

We have visited this hotel a few times in the last 4 years and we have noticed a gradual decline. Service is ok and the staff are friendly but there is the feeling that guests are a bit of a nuisance really. Check in was very time consuming as our booking had apparently been cancelled and they luckily found us a room for two nights. The reception staff seemed very disorganised and a bit stressed. They apologised for the inconvenience and refunded our car parking fee, also offering to send some fruit and cookies to our room to say sorry. The cookies and fruit did not arrive ... and my newspaper ordered for the next morning didn't,t materialise. I felt a bit sill reminding them but did on principle and we did get our 2 biscuits plus an apple, one pear and a plum! The room was comfortable and the bed was firm but a good nights sleep was enjoyed. Breakfast was mediocre- bacon tasteless, only fried eggs on offer (poached and scrambled to order), no hash browns, butter rock hard. We stayed in a premier inn the night before and their breakfast was far superior. Staff at the Royal seemed over worked, under pressure and unable to fulfill customer demands. I ordered poached eggs and both were over cooked - basically hard boiled. Normally I would have complained but we had already waited a while to be seated and served and we wanted to get on with our day. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening after reading the reviews - my advice would be to visit the Thai restaurant, Manow, round the corner!

« Lovely place in the centre of town »

This is a very convenient hotel, and very comfortable. The rooms are a good size, scrupulously clean, and there is space for all you need. The location is perfect, a couple of minutes to the high street and Cathedral centre. Lovely bar and good food in the restaurant.

« END LAGOON ' CHRISTMAS LUNCH CLUB ' - Good food and service. »

Our former work group of 8 have a ' Christmas ' lunch in Autumn and Spring and avoid the festive rush. On arrival we were welcomed by the staff, all of whom were keen to make our visit pleasant - they succeeded handsomely. We got good service, attentive and friendly. A table was set up ready for our arrival, we chose from the Lunchtime Specials menu and enjoyed the food. Thanks to all for an enjoyable and courteous visit. We look forward to our next visit to the Royal's bright and cosy Garden Restaurant.

« Great centrally located hotel »

Just stayed 15 to 17 November on a break with dinner on first night. Really friendly staff, super location at the Winchester Royal, very easy to find. Can't fault anything at all here, very clean everwhere, good sized rooms; and the thickest softest towels I have ever seen in a hotel. We will definitely stay here again.

« Lovely centrally located hotel »

I chose this hotel because of its central location and was not disappointed. Our room was well equipped, clean and modern, dispite the hotel being quite old. We were re-directed to an overflow car park as the adjacent car park was full. This was actually closer to our room so therefore ideal. Breakfast was okay although the choice for vegetarians was limited.

    5
    « Afternoon Tea »

Very pleasant afternoon for my 40th birthday! Very well catered for and looked after by the staff who were always quick to refill tea and coffee pots. Selection of food provided for our afternoon tea was lovely and also catered well for some friends that required gluten free option.

    « my museum break »

my stay was ok considering the value was dearer than portsmouth an they have more to see an the tv was very poor.i couldnt get the hot water to work on the shower so that was a let down apart from that it was an average stay.

    « Afternoon tea »

Went for afternoon tea with my daughter sister and parents today ,I booked for six but my husband could not come due to illness.w e were given a portion for 4 people I looked around for staff to tell them no one showed up for at least ten minutes. When I explained to the waitress she insisted there was portions for five as she plated it up . We showed her the food with four of everything.she was quite argumentative and rude. There were other customers in the restaurant and it was embarrasslng for myself and family. We have eaten in restaurants around the world and do not expect to be treated in this manner. The sandwiches were flavourless .the cake was shop bought ,although this will be denied! We did not complain to the manager as my parents wanted to leave with no fuss. Please avoid this hotel if you like good service and food!

« Lovely hotel, wonderful staff, never felt so comfortable in a hotel before »

Second time we've been here, both times we were impressed. This time we went for the feature room and were not let down. Lovely room, a few little extra touches, lovely high ceilings, very impressed. The staff could not do enough for you to make you feel welcomed and comfortable. The building itself has so much character and history, which you can see clues to if you look at the pictures and displays on the walls. The hotel itself is perfectly located, only a 10 minute walk from the train station, and right next to the high street to be able to explore. This has now become our favourite and first choice of hotel when visiting winchester

    5
    « Great Location!! »

Set centrally to explore the beautiful city of Winchester. This is a really nice hotel with lovely gardens and large comfortable rooms. Our room was clean, the bed was comfortable. Buffet breakfasts were excellent. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

    5
    « Location, location ,location »

Everything was very British. When I travel abroad I don't want everything AMERICAN; I want to experience the everyday flavor of the county I am in. Winchester is a good rest stop. The bus ride to Southampton along country roads was very charming and typical.

    5
    « I'll Be Back »

A lovely all round experience. Fantastic location but nice and quiet at the same time. Nice room and friendly attentive staff. Fantastic breakfast. It will definitely be my first choice when I return to the area.

    3
    « Good location »

Room was fine but the plug did not work in the wash basin, no double glazing in the room so the windows were misted up with water on the window ledge. Not much choice for a healthy breakfast. It was difficult finding the hotel car park, Winchester has a one way system and it took us several attempts!

  • 5
« Perfect place to visit »

Set perfectly to explore the beautiful centre of Winchester this is a really nice hotel with nice gardens and large comfortable rooms. Having asked for a room upstairs overlooking the garden we got one on the ground floor overlooking the car park which was a shame. Evening meal and breakfast were excellent.

    4
« Central for visiting Winchester with parking »

We stayed overnight at this hotel and found it in a great location with parking at £10 a night. It was just a stroll to the cathedral and the High Street shops and if we had had more time there was a river walk which is said to have inspired Keat's Ode to Autumn. Autumn is certainly a beautiful time to visit. The room was comfortable and quiet although lacking a view and quite a walk from reception. Some parts of the hotel looked dated but there was a pleasant garden for afternoon tea and the restaurant had a nice view of the garden. Breakfast was adequate and the service prompt. The only problem was at check-in, where the computer was not working, but it was resolved by the time we checked out. We would stay again.

« Winchester Royal - Nice old hotel »

Stayed here for two nights had a suite, what a brilliant room. Also had afternoon tea, excellent could not eat it all. Recommended by my parents and what a lovely hotel, I so much prefer old hotels to the faceless box rooms of modern ones and just love those creaky old stairs

    5
    « Very relaxing »

Ideal location and cosy night sleep ,perfect for shopping , nice meal etc .this was our second visit . we were here and when the to see the fire works ,which was well attended so good fun may come back for Christmas markets

« Our First Trip to Winchester »

A very basic hotel with mediocre restaurant service, although the breakfast arrangements were adequate. The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, but furniture and everything else was basic; in fact this must be the first time we have had a hotel room with no drawers in the furniture.

    4
« Winchester Health Walks Annual Lunch »

We have used this hotel for 2 years now and have just booked it next year. We had lunch for 39 in the Winton Room, and the service and food was really good. It is just off the high street and therefore it is easy for people to bus into town and walk to it. So that is why it suits our needs.

    4
    « Lovely hotel »

We stayed in this hotel for one night. The rooms were well decorated. The bed was comfy and the shower was great. The view from our room was lovely overlooking the hotels garden area. The bar area is nice as well. It is conveniently located near the high street and cathedral.

« Went there for a nice afternoon tea »

We have not actually been staying at the hotel, but just went there for a nice afternoon tea. They do have a very comfortable tea room, with lots of sofas, which is great when coming here with children. They serve an excellent tea, nice sandwiches, and very delicious cakes. Just the scones were a little bit overdone, but maybe that was just a fluctuation. However, I do have to comment the service. We have been taken care of by a very friendly young lady who, for example, gave a free jiuce to our little daughter and was in all respects very warm and welcoming. When I wanted to pay, they had some problem with the card reader, which was not her fault (not mine either) but of course caused a delay. But the way she handled that was extremely nice and while she truly gave her best to fix things, she just engaged me into a friendly conversation so that the delay did not even feel negative in any way. Few waiters, in particular of that age, have this kind of welcoming and warm personality. Thank you!

« Comfy bed and great shower. »

We stayed recently for a wedding. Having initially driven past the car park entrance due to the arrow pointing out of the car park we eventually managed to park in the back car park. Parking spaces are very limited but one of the staff kindly moved their car so we could have his space. The room was clean and well presented. The ensuite was compact but the shower was great! Plenty of hot water and very powerful! The only downside was no hair dryer in the room. (well not in the wardrobe anyway!) Thankfully I had packed my own but there was nowhere to plug it in where you could actually see into a mirror. The bed was very comfortable and we slept very well. Breakfast was lovely, plenty of choice and I especially enjoyed the 'real' mushrooms! Overall we enjoyed our stay, it was great being so close to the town centre but certainly not for travellers on a budget.

    4
« Good hotel. Great location »

Right in the heart of town. Surprisingly, parking was available. Better than average dining both at breakfast and especially dinner. Deal was good value (dinner and 2 nights). Winchester is highly recommended for a short exploring type break. Do the King Arthur trail with the excellent map leaflet from reception or Tourist Information at the bottom of town. Military museums are well worth a visit. Whole town is delightful.

    « Duchy off Norfolk »

Very good value for money, attentive staff always willing to help, rooms are very quiet, spacious and comfortable, breakfast and dinner off high standard. The hotel was very clean throughout, and the walled garden is superb. Car parking on site was good and secure.

    5
« Very nice stay in the centre of everything »

I come here regularly for work because the rooms are very comfortable, always reliable, with wonderful beds and good heat. The breakfast is very good and the bar room and sitting room are comfortable with a great open atmosphere. I like the period features which makes it all very welcoming, warm, and not like every other faceless hotel.

    « 3 nights in october »

Spent 3 nights at this hotel in early October 2016. Was able to park in the hotel car park a few doors up the road. Check in was quick, rooms were well equipped, spotlessly clean with comfy bed. Breakfast were good, with excellent choice of food. Please check the room cards work before returning to room, my bedroom door would not work in several occasions, so try and keep away from mobile phone or magnetic strip in bank cards.

    « Overnight in Winchester »

Nice and close to the centre of Winchester and all that it has to offer. Being a solo traveller I was glad to be parked in their small carpark but feel £10 overnight charge a bit steep. Friendly staff, the snack at lunch-time and breakfast was very nice, just a note if not booking direct and you choose to have breakfast it cost £20 all buffet style except for bringing your tea/coffee so I don't consider I had any service for this cost. I stay regularly at both 4 and 5 star hotels and comparing to other 4* ones I would say this is more a 3.5*. Had a few hiccups with getting into a room after 3 failed attempts (nothing to do with keys) however my third allocated room was very comfortable and late at night very quiet.

    3
« Not comparable to other Premier BW hotels. »

We found the hotel very good for being central in Winchester. The majority of service we received was polite and professional. Unfortunately, with weddings on both days of our stay we found the staff overstretched which led issues with our visit. We mentioned, on 2 occasions to staff, about a horrible smell in our bathroom and was never looked at. We asked for room service in the middle of the afternoon which was declined until I happened to meet a member of the management team who then personally accommodated our request. He also fixed the TV which I had reported on 2 occasions earlier too. The breakfast was buffet and although some aspects, such as the fresh fruit and continental components, were very good I felt that the cooked buffet breakfast was mostly bland in flavour and lacked a lot of presentation and quality. The sausages were the items which had a good flavour and quality to them. Some areas of our room lacked deep cleaning especially the lamps and shelves in the bathroom.

    4
    « Ideal location »

Ideally located in the centre of Winchester, but it was very quiet. It was clean and had good amenities. The bed was very comfortable and the room was lovely and clean. It has free wifi which worked fine. There is parking available, if they are not too busy, but there is an additional charge for it.

    4
    « Overnight stay »

Great location in centre of Winchester.comfortable beds and good size room with bottled water and biscuits on arrival. Beautiful garden to relax in. Have stayed twice and would stay again. Arriving late may mean car park is full

    « A good hotel »

We stayed for a date night special on Thursday night. The room was a standard which was satisfactory to our needs. However the chocolate and prosecco part of the package had to be asked for on arrival as it was not in our room; this was a shame as it was a date night package. They did provide us with cava instead of prosecco so we chased this up and they did replace very quickly and apologised. Dinner was included and was very good indeed; yummy and a perfect amount on the plate. Breakfast was very good although my girlfriend is a vegetarian and there were not many options available for her. What there was to eat was tasty and very fresh. Overall; the hotel was a good standard; I would rate it a 3 and a half star though if there was an option for this. The hotel staff were very friendly and the duty manager was a really kind and friendly guy.

    « A Degree of Excellence »

Attended with large group, nearly took the hotel over. Room very comfortable and quiet. Food at the two dinners and lunch could not be faulted. Staff were most helpful. Would visit again if in Winchester.

« I can imagine Americans loving staying here »

It wasn't until I arrived, that I realised I had stayed here before. The hotel is down a side street near the city centre. Handy for shops and restaurants. It's historical with nice touches - I haven't read any of the other reviews but I can imagine Americans loving staying here (and there is nothing wrong with that!) Rooms are comfortable, clean and a reasonable size. Pretty quiet place to stay. Breakfast is good, lots of choice. Staff are friendly and helpful. Bar is a bit small but there is an ok lounge next door. Free wifi.

« Nice hotel, good location »

Interesting and charcterful hotel. I was in the annex which was clean modern and functional, which is good but not as interesting as staying in the old part. I was a bit disappointed about check in. I arrived at 1 and was told check in is at 2. Most hotels check to see if your room is ready and let you in if it is. Breakfast was very good and it is a lvely restaurant. The guest lounge is full of character and very comfortable

    « Excellent choice »

Very well situated and with some good deals (only available on the hotel's own website), making it very good value for money. Most of the rooms are in a relatively modern block down one side of the garden. We had one facing the garden. The security-conscious might want to avoid garden rooms on the ground floor, particularly in the summer, as the windows are easy to access from the garden. Beds are full king-size (effectively two singles joined together) and are comfortable. All the rooms in the garden block are one side or another of fairly long corridors, which makes for a bit of noise from passing guests. For this reason, if you want peace and quiet (and don't mind the extra distance), I suggest the rooms furthest from the main hotel building. The problem was compounded for us by housekeeping staff having an animated conversation outside our door first thing in the morning. Breakfast (included in our deal) was fine. The standard selection of cooked items is available on the buffet with a couple of different egg choices on request. There is also a special cooked-to-order breakfast using locally sourced high quality ingredients (which makes one wonder about the quality of the standard offering!). I wonder if anyone ever pays the extra £5 to take this up. There was an adequate, though not exceptional, selection of cold items. No marmite visible if this is your thing. We had dinner on one night (also included in our deal). The menu isn't very adventurous but what we had was perfectly acceptable. We noticed that for £42 you can get a two-course dinner for two with a bottle of house wine ("wine and dine"), which would be well worth doing particularly if you are going to choose higher-priced things on the menu as the cost of food alone could be more than that. There are two car parks. The obvious one is in St John Street, the entrance to which looks unnervingly like an exit as there is an arrow on the ground for outgoing vehicles so one needs the courage of one's convictions to drive up to the barrier. This car park seems to fill up and quite a few guests left their cars here without finding a space whilst they took their cases into the hotel to check in. There is a second car park, accessed from Parchment Street (the car park entrance is after the constriction in the road, on the left), which is better placed for rooms in the garden wing (i.e. most of the rooms in the hotel). I recommend parking here and leaving cases in the car whilst one checks in.

    « Faultless Service »

Went with a large group (80+) of people for a weekend. Staff were excellent. Menu choices at two evening dinners were fantastic as was the food itself. The purchase of wine for the meal could have run a bit slicker but this was down to the management rather than the staff. If we ever visit Winchester again this will be our hotel of choice.

    « Catenian Provincial Weekend »

What an amazing hotel. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. Everywhere was immaculate. The rooms were beautiful. Beware bedroom 120, it is truly wonderful but the bed is so high you need a run at it. Well worth it because so comfortable. Thank you

    « Little gem »

Booked a Sunday night on our way to Dorset, a little worried when we turned up and they had a wedding in full swing, however if we had not seen the wedding we would have had no idea they were all partying with disco that night. The room they were in was obviously a way off from the bedrooms so we had a very quiet night in a very comfortable clean and nicely decorated room. Everything we needed including complementary mineral water and lovely homemade biscuits on arrival. The shower was great with White Company toiletries. The hotel has lovely gardens and very well placed for the city.

    « Date night special »

Had to amend, they were so very accommodating and helpful. Welcome when I got there was just so warm. The room was clean and spacious. The food was delicious and music was not too loud to affect dining and conversation. The catering staff were so warm, friendly and helpful to the point of even bringing out cake and singing for happy birthday for my partner. A 2 course meal of delicious food, prosecco and chocolate at such a reasonable price. The room was big with coffee , iron and more than enough towels, there was no noise in the night, it was just wonderful and on top of that, its central, train station, shops and very beautiful buildings for sightseeing. I would most definitely be going back and would highly recommend it.

« Weekend away with large group »

As the organiser of a weekend break for 86 I can only congratulate the hotel on their exemplary service throughout. Great location, fantastic beds, first class food from breakfast to function room dinners. Above all staff extremely friendly and professional in their work.

    « Delicious afternoon tea »

Four of us visited the hotel for afternoon tea after attending the graduation ceremony at the Cathedral. The tea was very good - freshly made sandwiches (4 different fillings), warm scones with jam and clotted cream, fruit cake, sponge cake, macaroons and chocolate covered marshmallows with a glass of Prosecco each. Not only was all the food freshly made and delicious, but the service was friendly and helpful and it was good value for money.

« Nothing special for the price »

Hotel was clean and the staff said hi to you around the building, however, they would say hi and then look straight at the floor so it felt awkward. Paid £10 each for me and my partner for breakfast, whilst it was a buffet it was generally pleasant but the fact I had to wait at kiosk for 10 minutes to be seated wasn't great, employees walked past without a word & didn't ask if we were waiting to be seated Beware, they'll take an additional £50 from you at Reception for use or the SMALL bottle of water and a cup of tea so either pop into town to Boots to collect your stuff as it's not worth £50 at all. Still awaiting the refund as they said when they know you haven't used anything within the hotel room they'll refund you. To me, it's not worth the price when you could just stay in a premier inn a couple of miles out of town.

    « Historic Hotel »

A historic building with modern facilities. Ideally situated close to the High Street and places on interest in the City. Staff are all courteous and efficient and do everything to make your stay enjoyable. Rooms in the modern extension are all clean and comfortable however only a few have in room safes which is a pity since they are not expensive and would be a good addition. Food is good. The hotel has two car parks (charged at £10 per day) and would recommend the rear car park as it is more accessible to the modern extension and more convenient for transferring luggage from car to room. The hotel has a large walled private garden with outdoor seating area for summer barbecues. All rooms have free WiFi.

    « Ok »

Hotel is ok but if you have a car do not even consider this hotel.you cannot get a space on either of their small car parks.i was on a leisure break for 2 nights but had to set the alarm for 7.30am to pay for parking on a council car park half a mile away.

« Organised visit to the Winchester Royal Hotel »

We had a party of 80 friends and we really loved the hotel. It is perfectly positioned near to the town, railway station and shops. The bedrooms are spacious and very well appointed and the function rooms likewise. Staff are very attentive, especially Slyvina who looked after the gala dinner we were attending. Food is outstanding and not a hint of complaints from any of us. We were warned of possible congestion at the car park but there is an overspill (if you can find it) which has room and conveniently positioned. There was a delay in breakfast on Saturday mainly because of the visit to the Cathedral but not too bad.

    3
« Needs to try harder »

This is billed as a 4* hotel. It is very well located in Winchester, a minute's walk to the main shopping street and with the cathedral nearby. The frontage is classical eighteenth century (at a guess), but many of the rooms are in an annexe at the back. These are dating a little with minor annoyances - lavatory seat slipping, toilet roll holder not functional, etc. We found the staff brusque and a bit officious, as though they were doing us a favour. Not cheap, either. Needs to try harder.

    4
« Excellent location, good breakfast, and a very pleasant comfortable room »

An old building -- but modern, comfortable (but not fancy) rooms. We were so busy sightseeing, that we spent little time in the room! A nice garden overlook, comfy beds, and a good shower. Breakfast (included) was a buffet, so not fresh cooked per diner -- but was good. Reception staff was extremely helpful -- maps, taxi calls, restaurant advice, directions, and a very late check in -- all no problem.

    « 39 year reunion. »

A friend booked this hotel as a base for our reunion. We had garden rooms on the ground floor, that overlooked a mature garden. The rooms were of a good size, also nice and warm as it was chilly outside. We were booked into the boardroom for our dinner, at a special rate. The meal was lovely and the staff were very attentive. Nothing was too much trouble. Especially Leta who was absolutely brilliant. Breakfast on the first morning was a little disorganised, but it was fine on day 2. All the staff encountered were friendly, courteous, and smart. The hotel is very central. The station is within walking distance( if your luggage is not too heavy). The cathedral and shops are just round the corner, but the hotel is surprisingly quiet. I wouldn't hesitate to book this hotel if/ when I visit Winchester again.

« Great Location, Nice Room »

The Winchester Royal Hotel is in a great location in the city. It's very easy to walk from there to the Great Hall, the Cathedral, the Wolvesey Castle, and anything else you'd like to see. I was a bit worried that the dingy hallway leading to the room would be indicative of the state of the room itself, but I was pleasantly surprised. The room was clean and nicely decorated. We had a lovely view of the gardens. My only complaint was that with no A/C or fan, the need to leave the windows open at night meant that we had quite a bit of noise and cigarette smoke drifting in from people sitting out on the terrace. Breakfast in the dining room was mediocre and not at all worth the cost. I'd avoid that and find something in one of the many options in town instead.

« Lovely location, beautiful gardens »

I've stayed here a few times over the years and it's always been a pleasure. The staff are polite and well mannered, and some of them have been there for a while, which is always a good sign of continuity in a hotel. On arrival I was allocated a suite on the top floor, which was lovely, and had a really comfortable bed. The door frame was only 6-foot tall and I'm 6'4" but I only hit my head once in the three days I was there. The toiletries are from The White Company, and good quality, although the cleaners can be a bit stingy in leaving some fresh ones if they think they are any dregs left in the previous days. Breakfast was busy on each day, but efficient, and the restaurant overlooks the gardens. The hotel is good value and less than ten minutes' walk to the High Street and the Cathedral.

Excellent hotel in a central location for a fascinating city. The hotel comfortable and extremely quiet bearing in mind the location. Nice to try one of the local brewers in the bar. Good to see local providers being utilised.

« Nice hotel central location with good food »

Booked the hotel via Best Western reservations for 2 nights DBB On checking in requested an upgrade and was upgraded to room 104 which was a large recently refurbished room tastefully done in the original building. Bathroom had also been recently refurbished. Powerful shower. Very comfy bed and had a very good nights sleep. Internet had good signal. Ate in the restaurant and the food was a very good standard and steak was done perfectly. The service in the restaurant on the first night was extremely slow waited over an hour for my main course. On the second night it was quicker but the staff failed each night to ask if everything was alright with my meal and appeared to lack structure and guidance as meals were brought to wrong tables Breakfast was self service buffet style and was very good and so were the staff. Staff extremely polite and helpful. I would return to the hotel and would happily recommend it.

    « Disappointing »

Great location however afraid to say that this was most positive aspect of stay. Room was adequate though tired. There were issues with reservation and huge shortfall in service expectations in some areas .

    3
« Great location - but not the standard of service & organisation we expected to find. »

More staff training needed to radically improve the reception and breakfast service. Hotel seemed overwhelmed with two weddings over one weekend. It's a pity, because the hotel has much to recommend it, especially the location.

    « Very Tired Property »

This hotel is in a great location but is in urgent need of refurbishment. the rooms were foostie. Breakfast was chaotic as there was not enough food to go round which seemed to be caused by the presence of a coach party.

    « Good location & very welcoming »

Visit here several times a year Rooms are always wonderfully quiet - certainly this would win my vote for the best nights sleep at a hotel in the UK regardless of price Staff super friendly and nice bar and always a nice breakfast. We stay at hotels across the UK at prices similar and higher than this and this is the place I most look forward to visiting Keep up the good work!

    « Charming hotel »

Arriving on Sunday with a colleague for a week working in Winchester. Given a lovely large room in the old house overlooking the entrance. Room was spacious, with plenty of storage and a lovely big bathroom with shower and bath. All the usual amenities hairdryer, safe, iron and ironing board in the room, refreshments including biscuits and bottled water, very comfortable bed and seating area too. Ate in the main restaurant on Sunday and the bar on Monday, both were really tasty meals and good value for money. Breakfast was buffet style with full English, continental and gluten free options. All the staff were helpful and cheerful. The location was central yet quiet and peaceful. I especially liked the secret garden! I would definitely recommend this as a great stay.

« You can't get a cup of tea here in the afternoon. »

A group of us used to meet here regularly for tea and conversation. The staff were hard to find and when you could find the one member of staff on duty s/he was usually checking out, doing bar duties, and serving a private lunch party, as well as supposedly serving tea in the lounge. You order tea in the bar and often the computer isn't working, which means the till isn't working and they can't take your money. As the bar is unattended, you could help yourself to, eg, mince pies and paper napkins at Christmas. Sometimes tea and coffee are set out in the lounge for a conference, and if you can't get service you could help yourself to these. The staff on duty are often untrained foreigners who have no idea how to serve tea. Eventually we complained to the receptionists (why there are 2 on duty when the place is so short staffed I have no idea) and one of them was most apologetic and offered us free tea on our next visit, but even that wasn't enough. We now go elsewhere.

    « Fantastic Stay »

Nothing was too much trouble, the staff and service were fantastic. We came to stay at the hotel as we were getting married at Winchester Register Office. When we arrived early on the 4th October to leave our bags and park our cars, we were given complimentary proseco and coffee, that was a lovely touch that we weren't expecting. Our rooms were fantastic, the breakfast was gorgeous and I wanted to say a particular big thank you to Rosanna on the reception. She was very patient and understanding when we came back later that day having had a few drinks!! But the next morning having had quite a late night, she was extremely kind and generous and made our checkout very memorable and painless. I would highly recommend this hotel for its location, wonderful staff and lovely rooms.

    « Terrible customer service »

We wanted to stay at this hotel using our Tesco vouchers. The Tesco best western booking people phoned the hotel and agreed a price for the room on a particular Saturday evening. We purchased the vouchers in good faith but when the Tesco booking line phoned the hotel back to confirm the booking they were told that they don't take Tesco voucher bookings on a Saturday night. The booking line even played the recording of the Royal Hotel member of staff agreeing to our booking for that particular Saturday night. I think that having heard the recording of the conversation the hotel could have reconsidered and given us the room and honoured there verbal promise. Very disappointed as my husband and I had been looking forward to some quality time together in the beautiful city of Winchester.

« Lovely room but poor customer care from frontline staff »

Arrived on Saturday evening to be met with a rather unfriendly female receptionist, who made me feel like I was wasting her time. After being given her key card we tried to enter our room, but card not working. Back to see the happy receptionist, who made no apology but frowned & handed a new card over. At this stage we were assisted by a very helpful young man, who said he had recently started working at the hotel. On returning back to our room later that evening, our room key not working again. No-one around to help & waited for 10 mins to find staff to help. Very clean and comfortable room, and good breakfast.

« Nice characteristic hotel in the City Center »

I stayed at The Winchester Royal when attending a meeting at the hotel. The hotel has obviously had an refresh recently and the public areas are bright and fresh. The room was fresh, clean and relatively spacious. The staff were all friendly and helpful. The hotel is 2 minute walk from shops and restaurants and has a small car park. I would happily stay again and recommend to others.

« A lovely hotel in central Winchester »

I stayed overnight on a business trip to Winchester. My stay co-incided with the start of term so the the town & hotels were all -really- busy. Still had great service from the hotel - the room was clean and modern, checkin/checkout were quick and breakfast was really good - choice of full english buffet or great croissants & cheese/ham/salami plus the usual tea, coffee, juice, fruit salad etc. Great location as in town so lots of restaurants & pubs nearby.

    « Wedding & 2 night stay »

We got married here earlier in September and the day was perfect ?? We looked at a few hotels before deciding on this one and while other hotels offered packages with little manoeuvrability the Royal Hotel weren't just willing to do things differently but would actively suggest changes! We were helped to plan our wedding by Kelly, when she realised we weren't keen on any of the menu options she asked us what we would want if we could have any option. We both love curry but as it isn't on the hotel's menu we hoped we might be able to get a simple curry and rice, in the end we were given curry, naans, bhajis, poppadoms, dips, etc. Absolutely perfect for us and it was really really tasty, especially the bhajis, they were amazing! The evening buffet was also really good, one of the most common comments we've had from people is about how amazing the meatballs were! Apart from the food Kelly was really helpful with the preparation of every other aspect of the wedding day and was very good at answering all of my many many questions! She really seemed to care and be excited about the day with us and it made us feel a lot more confident about the day going smoothly having her there on the day. As well as Kelly, the other staff were also really helpful and supportive on the day, unfortunately I can't remember anyone else's names! There was a man who was working in the meeting room opposite reception the evening before the wedding, he let us go in there to put together the cake/cake stand and gave us some drinks to keep us fuelled! The staff laying the tables the night before were also very helpful in helping us organise the room. The hotel itself is lovely, we got married in the garden restaurant which we didn't add any decorations/flowers to as we didn't feel it needed anything. We then had photographs in the lovely garden (until it started raining!), we then came inside and finished the photographs in the entrance foyer as this is a really lovely looking room with a lot of natural light. Our meal and evening do were both held in the Darials room upstairs which has a lovely beamed ceiling with lights draped over them, we felt like we could keep decorations to a minimum as the room is so nice as it is. There's no lift at the hotel and we had one guest in a wheelchair but the hotel were really good at accommodating this and ensuring everyone was comfortable and happy. I stayed the night before and night after the wedding in the Jane Austen suite which is a lovely room, definitely the nicest hotel room I've ever stayed in! It was the size of a small flat, plenty of room for me and 5 bridesmaids to get ready. The bed was huge and incredibly comfortable. I'd definitely recommend the Winchester Royal Hotel for a wedding venue, or simply a hotel room for the night ??

Nice place. Close to the main pedestrian street. Can easily walk to Winchester Cathedral and Great Hall. Would recommend. Breakfast in morning but not included in price. Garden area where you can sit outside.

    « Great location »

The hotel is in a perfect spot for exploring Winchester. The rooms are an alright size and the bed is relatively comfortable but the pillows were terrible, meaning that we didn't sleep well. Original sash windows were a nice feature. The staff were pleasant enough but didn't have a map of the town when I asked for one and despite us saying we'd parked it car in the car park (twice) didn't provide us with the code to leave so when we got to the barrier didn't know what to do and had to run back into the reception. So nice but not overly helpful. The shower was fine and had toiletries from the white company, which was nice. Didn't have the breakfast so can't comment on that, but £16.50 (or £10 if pre booked the night) before seemed a bit steep.

« Excellent stay at the Royal Winchester »

A thoroughly enjoyable stay in this historic hotel in the heart of Winchester. Their own car park is a real bonus and right in the centre. Very friendly and efficient service and always with a smile. Breakfast was delicious with plenty of choice and swift replenishment of dishes when needed. Our suite was very luxurious with a huge bathroom and super comfortable bed. We shall definitely be returning to this lovely city and to this special hotel with its fascinating past. Thanks to all who made our visit such a treat.

    « Disappointed »

Great location but thats the only high note. Reception staff were frankly weird. Key cards failed to work everyday. Room wasn't cleaned as late as 2pm. Both of these issues were met by excuses by the hotel staff. We were told our booking included complimentary breakfast at check-in but at check-out were told to pay...we didn't. A disappointing stay and would not book again. A lot of staff were very nice, friendly and helpful and they should maybe find another hotel to work in.

    « Winchester Royal Hotel »

The hotel was lovely and the location was perfect for our needs. The gardens and courtyard were especially pretty. The downside is that they have no business center so there is no easy way to print any documents you might need, like boarding passes. Also, because of our flight schedule, we arrived 3 hours before check in and there was no way to request early check in ahead of time. After traveling all night, we would have loved to have gotten into the room right away and grabbed a shower before heading out to explore the beautiful town of Winchester.

    5
« First class customer service »

From check in to departure the staff were friendly and cheerful and couldn't do enough to help with the few additional requests I had. The car parking is plentiful and spaces a decent size although the one way system around town is a pain - nothing to do with the hotel. My room (117), which had fabulous views of the garden, was well appointed, clean and comfortable. Both evening meal and breakfast were thoroughly enjoyable and all in all it was a lovely stay with no complaints.

« As good as last time »

Lovely garden rooms, excellent food in restaurant, worth doing a DB&B option as good value for money. Great location in Winchester. Only slight sticking point is you have to pay for parking. Not really cricket when you've paid for DB&B and taken lunch there.

« Overpriced for standard of hotel and room »

Excellent location, looks nice from the outside, but that's where it stops. Arrived as wedding photos were being taken on the steps into the hotel, and had to wait outside in the rain. Not being a killjoy, but it was a bit of a daft place to take photos. Hotel smelt stale, gruby carpets throughout. Room, for what we paid was basic to say the least, and bathroom same. No breakfast included in the expensive price of room. Just didn't live up to expectations. We've stayed in much nicer places, for less. Very nice girl in reception checked us out.

    « A very happy experience »

Mother wished to celebrate her one hundredth birthday in Winchester and we chose the Royal Winchester both for its location and for the fact that mother remembered it from her time in the city during the Second World War. We could not have made a better choice. The hotel offered an adapted room, suitable for mother's needs, with an adjoining room for myself so that, with the door open, I could hear if she needed assistance in the night, which was the ideal solution for our situation. Both rooms were well furnished and the beds were very comfortable. We booked breakfast and dinner in the hotel: both were of excellent quality and variety, while the kitchen were happy to supply mother with small portions appropriate to her appetite. The staff were unfailingly helpful...and it clearly came from the heart of all concerned. Nothing was too much trouble; people made time for a little chat with mother, and she was touched and delighted when she was presented with a cake on her birthday on the initiative of the staff. The hotel has a delightful period charm, the garden is an oasis of peace and it was clear that other guests were enjoying their stay too. I would love to return there and would heartily recommend it to others.

The hotel was very central within easy walking distance of shops, restaurants and places of interest. The staff were friendly and helpful, beds were comfortable, clean and the breakfast was excellent.

    3
    « Disappointed »

The hotel has a great location and its own car parks (altho a bit tight for space) Quality of room not as good as it should have been for +£200 per night. Bathroom in particular was very spartan. Service at breakfast very poor (ate out every night as a result) Weddings on both nights which were noisy

    4
« Staff excellent, food lovely and plentiful at breakfast »

I can't quite give this hotel a 5 as our room had a couple of problems. The windows were in poor condition one stay was nonexistent which meant we could open our window and the other looked like someone had tried to force it open as the wood was broken between both stays, making it hard to have this window open. Having one of the hottest Septembers I can remember, we needed fresh air in the room. The other was a personal preference of mine to have one soft pillow. Most hotels supply a firm and a soft pillow, whereas here was only two firm which made it uncomfortable for me. That aside, the staff are excellent, most welcoming and helpful. The general Hotel is first class, the bar has a decent choice and the garden well kept. Location is superb, a gentle stroll into the city and all of it's wonders. Value....... difficult, I hate add-ons, if I'm traveling from afar, I need a car park and I don't need to be told on arrival it's £10 a night to park where I'm staying. Would I come back here, yes I would

« Needs some little things fixing »

I stayed for one night while on a business trip. I arrived to a pleasant room in the modern annexe but with a dirty toilet. I asked for this to be cleaned while I went out but this did not happen. I have never stayed anywhere else (including other Best Western hotels) where this happened. Breakfast was ok, but understaffed. I was waiting a while to be seated, ordered tea and got coffee, and had to chase up a hot food order as my colleagues had almost finished their breakfast while I was waiting for it to arrive. A great location and interesting building, and the garden is a treat given it is in the centre of town. The small things need fixing, however, to compete with other hotels given it is in a significant tourist location.

    « Holiday »

We did have problems with the bathroom when we first arrived but these were quickly sorted out by the staff. The rooms were clean, the breakfast very good. The location of the hotel was excellent, although a charge of £10 per night for parking was, I thought, excessive.

Hotel in great location, makes walking into town centre very easy.Comfortable room, buffet breakfast OK but no alternative choice was offered, eg poached eggs with possibly haddock would have been nice.

« Singing in the Cathedral »

Needed superior accomodation within easy walking distance of Winchester Cathedral. Wanted (and got) car parking. Hotel had great restaurant food but there were many excellent places to eat close by. Easy to walk round the old parts of the city, and good range of shops (and the market)

    « Great location! »

Parking was a little tight but as I was able to walk everywhere, it wasn't a big problem. The room was clean and comfortable and ready although I arrived early, and when I checked out, I was able to leave my luggage at reception to be collected later.

    « Nice Hotel »

Rooms are quite nice and reception staff quite friendly. Rooms are quite for a good holiday. Wish they have a refrigerator/bar in the rooms. However, it is a bit overpriced given the facilities they have.

    « Overnight stay for a show »

The hotel is in a great location for access to the city centre and the venue we were attending in the evening. Friendly, helpful staff. Vegetarian and dietary needs were well catered for. Will definitely stay here again if visiting the area.

« one night stay in winchester »

We thoroughly enjoyed our one night stay at the Winchester Royal Hotel. Such an historic and interesting building. Afternoon tea in the walled garden was a welcome treat after travelling from Nottingham. We are very happy to recommend this hotel.

    « Good Central Location »

Hotel is well located in the centre of Winchester with the hotel having old world charm the matches the location. If driving by car you do need to look out for the little brown sign and right turn at the sign. Also ignore the arrow on the entrance to the car park which is there for the right turn when you leave. The room is in the new part of the hotel and well appointed with plenty if breakfast options to choose from.

« Good traditional hotel in city centre »

A pleasant clean hotel in the city centre, close to the cathedral close. Good parking and a large garden. Some of the staff need to get over a 'jobsworth' attitude to guests and understand that a smile and a kind word goes a long way towards an excellent review!!

« Excellent 2 nights in this fine city »

Very good food, very comfortable bed and really pleasant staff in a really traditional hotel with its own car park all so close to the centre of the city. . We left feeling envious of all who live in Winchester with its character so carefully preserved and maintained.

« Lovely hotel in the centre of Winchester »

I stayed here for one night and found it to be a very pleasant resting stop. The room and adjoining bathroom were incredibly spacious, warm and comfortable. The bed was very comfy, and I would have got a good night's sleep except for the fact that, oddly, there was a door between mine and the next room, meaning I could hear the neighbours when they came in late in the night. It was perfectly safe due to the door being locked, but I didn't quite understand why it needed to be there as it meant no sound insulation whatsoever. The staff on reception were perfectly polite although I could tell they were rushed off their feet due to it being such a large hotel with numerous guests checking in and out at all times. I didn't try the breakfast selection. Over all, given its location so close to the centre of town and the comfortable condition of the rooms, I'd probably stay here again. Although I would try to get a room that doesn't have an adjoining door to its neighbour next time!

Really nice hotel with helpful and friendly staff. The food in restaurant was excellent. We had fresh fruit in our two rooms, rooms are very spacious and high quality. The hotel is located in the centre of the city.

    « Fantastic weekend break »

Stayed over the August bank holiday for two nights. We were in the Jane Austen Suite which was a very spacious, well furnished room. All the staff were very helpful, polite and professional throughout our stay. We ate on both nignts in the restaurant, even though we had originally booked elsewhere for the Sunday evening, as the food was of a high standard with service to match and at a very reasonable price. The hotel is perfectly located for the City centre. We will be returning here again when we next visit Winchester and would recommend it highly.

« Charming Hotel and Fabulous Afternoon Tea »

We spent one night at Winchester Royal for our anniversary. The room we stayed in was in the original building and was beautifully designed, decorated and very spacious. The staff were friendly and incredibly helpful. We arrived in our hotel to find a Happy Anniversary card waiting for us from the staff. We had contacted the hotel because of issues with our booking stage but their customer service was great and they kindly offered us Afternoon Tea to make up for the issues. We were really impressed by their attention to detail and their desire to make the experience memorable for us. The afternoon tea the following day was lovely. The weather was great so we sat outside to enjoy their tranquil oasis in the centre of Winchester before leaving.

Comfortable, clean rooms, good food.Very good location adjacent to city centre. Nice secret garden.Shame about the excessive overnight parking charges and the surcharges on buy a gift deal, which makes what should be a cheap deal into something considerably more expensive.

Winchester Royal is a lovely period property, providing an excellent traditional break in a very convenient central location. It is also able to offer with parking which isn't always the case. Recommended.

    « Delicious afternoon tea! »

My friend and I celebrated my birthday with an afternoon tea using a voucher I found on Groupon. The weather was amazing so we chose to sit outside in the sun. We were greeted with a glass of prosecco and shortly after came a pot of tea - it did however come out without a jug of milk which was a little disappointing but once highlighted, staff were quickly apologetic and brought out a jug of milk. The afternoon tea itself was delicious. 4 small sandwiches (egg, ham, smoked salmon and beef), a scone, macaroons, teacake, fruit loaf, lemon drizzle and a fruit tartlet. Thankyou for a lovely birthday experience!

    « A stay of two halves »

This is a stay of two halves. Firstly the best parts. A gorgeous huge room with a four poster high bed, beautiful double arched windows, a spacious bathroom, fab deep bath and separate power shower. The Ladies on reception exude magic and happiness that just makes one feel relaxed and happy as soon as one walks in. Clean hotel and a nice relaxed feeling. The walled garden has lost some magic but is still very pleasant to walk around and adds an extra dimension to your stay. Based on the above alone we would have given 5 stars. Secondly the worst parts. Our room a free upgrade which was stunning (see above for the praise). Unfortunately, when all the lights are off and the curtains are drawn the green led emergency light is bright enough to read a book by. It is positioned in the middle of the wall near the top of the ceiling about 10ft from the floor. It is not near an exit rather in the middle of the wall. The light bounces off onto the wall opposite in a huge circular shape of about 6 ft across bright green and then back to the mirror on the other wall to be reflected back again. There is also the same green led lights in the bathroom and in the hallway. We called down to reception who came to investigate and said it must be there for a reason for it being there and took some photos of it. We said we can see you clearly in the green light and can not sleep in here. The maintenance cupboard was locked so no access to a ladder to cover it. We were offered a room for that nights sleep and then a different room for the second nights sleep. This was late (see dinner marathon below). My Hubby managed to hook a sock over the led light and thus the problem was fixed. If you stay in room 120 take a thick sock to throw over the tiny led light. Do not go to dinner hungry you will be beside yourself by the time dinner arrives. We were due to stay for 2 nights and had planned for dinner at the hotel for both nights. Our first nights stay we pre-booked a table for 8pm. A party of 30 were in a separate room to the main area with the doors wide open, not a problem in itself except there were 2 members of staff dedicated to the room who ignored 4 couples at the tables (including ourselves) apart from one couple who they checked everything with regularly?which was very strange. We waited over an hour for our first/main course and then one of the dishes was served different from what was oredered. This was after chasing for our food. For the second/dessert course we waited for a further hour for dessert to be served that was a cold dessert. Again we had to chase the large party had already left by now, why such a huge delay? All four couples also dining in the restaurant were similarly delayed. We heard the waiter apologising to each couple dining in the same room as he took each course to their tables. Once the party of 30 had finished the door to that room were shut and we were all left in silence. At one point all four of us couples looked at each other with a sad shrug and tried to make the evening feel good. There was no background music playing which was such a shame as that's all it needed.. instead it was just a feeling from the staff that we should all hurry up and leave. All in all it took two and a half hours to be served two courses. Breakfast the following day was another fun experience. It's a buffet style serve yourself. We'd read the reviews that said to arrive on time (8am for bank holiday) boy were they right! We served ourselves the delicious bacon which was cold (the heater burner underneath was not working properly and all the bacon was cold) such a shames as the actual flavour was delicious. I asked for poached eggs which took 40 minutes to arrive and were ceremoniously dumped on my plate along with water onto the cold bacon. I ended up with already cold bacon swimming in water and two burst open poached eggs burst open from the force of the dumping. Such a shame. We had dinner in the city that night. As we could not face having a long wait again for dinner and also feeling bad for the poor chap having to apologise to everyone all the time. Breakfast the following day was the best of fun. We arrived at 8:35 and I immediately ordered my beloved poached eggs looking forward to them very much, I thought I'd wait until they arrived on a plate before getting the delicious bacon and toast. There was fast music playing in the area this morning as though the team thought this would hurry all along. 40 minutes later I checked with the original member of staff as to where they were?.oh umm they should be with you soon I'll check. 5 minutes she came back the chef says they will be 2 minutes. I was feeling relaxed and happy and looking forward to them. 20 minutes later they had still not appeared. I checked with a different member of staff who went into the kitchen and never came back out. After a total of waiting for 50 minutes we had to leave as we had a packed day ahead of us. As we waited by the seating podium to tell any member of staff we were leaving we saw the second lady pop her head out of the kitchen and we said we have to go as waiting over 45/50 minutes for poached eggs and chasing twice is not really fair. In summary for the reception staff and room itself in the daytime a fab stay. For dinner- eat somewhere else first other wise you will be waiting too long to eat. For breakfast do not order poached/boiled /scrambled eggs just have what is presented.

    « Noisy nights! »

Not told there was a wedding on when we booked which added to the problem but even on a Friday night the locals were out in force shouting and singing at 3am. The wedding disco was at the other end of the hotel but the sound still travelled along the road. It did stop at midnight but then the smokers stood on the street talking for ages. There is a newer block of rooms further away from the road (our room was 117 at the front) so that may be less of an issue there. Breakfast was not well organised as nobody seemed to be running it efficiently. Tables not cleared quickly, sloppy lukewarm fried eggs, cheap streaky bacon, no muslei etc. Decor is good throughout and most of the young staff are great but some of the longer serving staff are a bit abrupt! Car parking is £10 per day but there are not many spaces. Free wifi but it didn't reach our room unless you left the door open! Probably fine during the early part of the week but beware if there is a wedding on!

    « A nice afternoon »

My wife and I came here to meet with her Distant Cousin for afternoon tea. The hotel is easy to find, although I did get a tad confused by their car park entrance: the painted arrow on the single road indicated it was an exit - the sign on the wall indicated it was an entrance. Anyway, I took my chances, the barrier opened, and I drove in. There were plenty of spaces available: I would suggest one is careful when driving in though - there's a bit of a dip in the road surface. We had a bit of trouble finding an entrance to the hotel from the car park - we ended up using the one off the main road. This may have just been me being a bit of a wally though. We were greeted by a friendly young man who confirmed our booking and led us to our seat. We were there half an hour early, and were offered a pre-afternoon tea pot of tea - which we took. The Cousin arrived at 15:25 and the staff being very attentive, bought our afternoon tea out straight away. The afternoon tea was supposed to be for two people, but it was easily enough for three. It contained a nice selection of Sandwiches, Scones (served with Cream and Jam) and different type of cakes - all very tasty. The tea was advertised as costing £21 - I believe it was worth the price. The rest of the afternoon was spent outside in the garden drinking Tea - how very British :) The garden is quiet and is very pleasant to sit in. The only thing I would say is that on the website it says to wear clothing that is smart casual and that it is essential to book. We did book, and were told that there was nothing at 3pm, but we could be fitted in at 15:30. This wasn't a problem, but I was surprised to find the place empty, apart from one table being used. And as for the smart casual look they requested, I saw one gentleman booking in wearing a very scruffy pair of shorts with an even scruffier T-shirt, with socks and slip on shoes - not at all smart. I probably would come here again, as we found the whole experience enjoyable. My wife and I didn't stay in the hotel - but the Cousin did. She said the room was comfortable and quiet.

    « Nice but dim »

Wanted to have night in Winchester to go to the black boy pub which is very good. So thought we stay in a nice hotel in the town center. Very nice hotel with nice rooms and a nice breakfast. However the staff are a bit on the slow side, having to look for someone each time you wanted a drink at the bar for example as they all seemed to be locked behind reception chatting, and at breakfast turning customers away because tables weren't cleaned ready to people to sit down at breakfast. Pick up the slack and it would be a great hotel rather than just nice.

« Nice but uncomfortable when warm weather »

Stayed here for couple of nights for work. The problem with this hotel is that the rooms have no air-conditioning or ceiling fan. When I arrived my room was stifling hot no windows open no moving air and was extremely uncomfortable. I asked at reception if any rooms did have aircon and the girl there said they didn't because it wasn't hot very often in this country. Great attempt at an excuse. NOT. How patronising she was. Hmm like how many hotels are there in UK with aircon? Yeah like most of them. I can't describe how uncomfortable this was. I heard another women complaining too. I managed to get 2 desk fans and they were on the whole time I was there. Apart from this it's a nice hotel nice enough rooms and we'll located. I won't stay again if i can help it. Unless it's winter

    « A Fine Two-Night Stay »

Our room was in the rear modern part which wasn't clear upon booking but turned out fine. You did have to cart your bags up a flight of stairs, so be aware of that if that would be a difficulty for you. It was well appointed with a comfortable bed. The tea and coffee service in the room was welcome and came with a variety of cookies which we appreciated! Breakfast was not included, but if we had opted for it by the night before, it would have been 10 pounds rather than the usual 16. We didn't try it though, preferring to look around in Winchester for a place. There was a free newspaper each morning. Parking was a godsend and the location was great for sight-seeing.

« Extremely mediocre and overpriced hotel. »

Upon arrival to the hotel in reception I discovered there was a £10 charge for the carpark for the night (Saturday), which considering it was 5.30pm and the rest of Winchester was free after 6pm until 9am on Monday I thought this was a bit harsh along with the £10pp EXTRA I'd have to pay for breakfast. Why do you even have to charge paying customers to park at your hotel? I decided to move the car as I didn't want to pay the £10 or £20 for breakfast which would have pushed the bill to £220! The room was a Feature Double, which I could not see any features which stood out, maybe the view of the carpark perhaps? The room itself was clean and looked fairly newly renovated (though not my taste), so had no complaints, but maybe at £190 per night it should be a bit more stylish! The bathroom was clean and newish looking, but not contemporary at all, more like the bathroom in a new student house or hospital! The building itself it a mix of lovely historical rooms, such as the entrance lobby (wood panelling etc), and very dated hallways/corridors that need renovating. The bar was pleasant enough, and the restaurant room in the conservatory looked good. The staff were helpful enough when asked for extra bed and fan (room was very hot on warm night), so no complaints there. The only issue is why so many hotels (groups) employ staff that are so young. I have no complaint with the service of the staff, they were actually pretty pleasant, but lacked a bit of professionalism, which just adds to the overall feeling of mediocrity. The garden seems very nice, and the outside area pleasant. Overall some good points to this hotel, but overall at £190 / night, even for touristy city like Winchester, this seems steep. It felt like a tired, not particularly well run hotel, that had been renovated in some parts and not others, so felt disjointed. If they had renovated it in a way that was more befitting the period building, then it wouldn't matter so much that the hallways etc hadn't been done yet, but the style (e.g. the lounge) just didn't seem to fit the better thought out conservatory and old rooms like the lobby! Overall a bit of a disappointing trip.

« Excellent blend of traditional and modern »

Only here for one night but for a city centre hotel, this exceeded our expectations. Out room was in the modern part and was clean, well furnished with a comfortable bed. Also very quiet which was unexpected. Staff friendly and helpful and breakfast was good. Parking provided at £10 which is reasonable for a city centre. This is a very pleasant hotel in a very good location. Just right for the city centre and the Cathedral. The staff are very efficient and eager to help. For eating, we only experienced the breakfast buffet, which was superb!

    « Winchester Royal Hotel »

The history of the building is interesting, however, we were housed in a modern annex towards the rear of the building which bore little relation to the original building. While the cost of the rooms is well above average, unusually, we were charged to use the hotel car park and while this was made clear once we'd completed the booking information it was not apparent beforehand. On the upside, the location of the hotel within the city centre is excellent and the staff are polite.

Very reasonable. Huge room with comfortable bed and linen, right with a vast garden room. Super convenient location in town. Don't be put off by old fashioned convoluted entry - that area is historical. Considering the price it is very good quality. All the staff are charming.

« Lovely Hotel in heart of Winchester »

I spent a weekend at this hotel with 5 others. The staff were really friendly and helpful. The rooms were lovely, clean and spacious. Plenty of wardrobe space and comfortable beds. The bathrooms were not huge but adequate with shower over the bath and product supplied for showering and hair washing. There was sufficient tea and coffee in the room. Breakfast was great and we were able to eat some of it outside in the sunshine. The enclosed back gardens were beautiful, calm and private. The evening meal was delicious with a good choice of meals and wines. The bar was good, though we never really made use of it. The hotel is situated in the city centre and so walking from it into the city was easy. There are many bars and night clubs nearby. There is a private car park which is secure but costs for parking, which is fair. I would happily return to this hotel any time.

    « A treat away »

picked this hotel as it was nearest to the city centre. Our room was amazing and the bed was very comfortable. We treated ourselves to the Royal Tea and it was lovely, the only thing was that we had to ask for more tea but the staff was busy as they did have a group of 30 also having the tea. The room was clean and airy and with a modern décor. The only down side was having to pay £10 a night for car parking

    « Great location »

Perfect location for visiting Winchester. Would go back. Overal we were very happy with the hotel. I went with my mother and my two daughters 12 and 15, we all enjoyed our stay. Receptionist very efficient and polite. Rooms clean and comfortable. Kids menu nothing special, my 12 year old was not that hungry so decided to pick something from it, but wished she went for the adults even though it would have been too big. Breakfast was good although as items went they were not replaced and we were there at 9 and it was until 9.30 so thought we would be ok.

« First time visiting winchester »

Beautiful hotel, easy to find, great location, friendly staff. The room was lovely, clean with a super comfy bed! However lol, the room we were in was directly above an extremely loud air con unit which buzzed and rattled all night and the delivery bay which had trolleys being dragged across the car park at about 6am. So we didn't get much sleep, which isn't good as I love sleep and usually try to have some at he end of every day. We did point this out in the morning upon checkout, the air con unit is supposed to switch off at midnight ... It didn't, the deliveries aren't supposed to be that early ... They were. The staff were great and apologised and knocked off the £10 parking fee ( which I don't think you should have to pay either of you are a resident at the hotel, I don't charge my guests to park on my drive if they stay at my house ) and also said the manager would be intouch , so all in all the hotel was great it was just a shame about the location of our room. I only gave a rating of 2 on value due to the fact that the room wasn't actually fit for the purpose that we booked it for.

    « Good central hotel »

This a good central hotel and is comfortable but do make sure your garden room does not face onto the flats opposite as there is no privacy unless one draws the curtains in daytime. The reception area was left unattended when I checked in consequently there were a few of us all waiting.

After getting a voucher on Groupon I came here with my Mum for a birthday afternoon tea. Greeted by a friendly gentleman we were seated next to the window overlooking their garden. Their prices normally are very reasonable and I would go again

    « Great hotel - highly recommended »

My partner and I stayed at this hotel for a weekend break, and had a lovely time. The room (overlooking the garden) was very spacious, clean and had an extremely comfortable king size bed. The beer garden was a little noisy at night times, till quite late - it didn't bother us as we had been out for a drink or two before retiring too, but if you like an early night / are easily disturbed by noise then maybe a room not overlooking the garden in the summer months would be better! The hotel is very well situated for Winchester town centre and cathedral, all just a few minutes walk from the hotel. The buffet style breakfast was excellent - choice of cooked breakfast, fruit, cereal, pasties etc, all very fresh, and great bacon! All staff were pleasant, polite and helpful. We would highly recommend this hotel and would definitely return.

    « Comfortable stay »

We stayed for two nights. Our room price included breakfast. The room was comfortable and clean. Breakfast was a buffet of hot and cold and was good quality. It took a while for tea and coffee to be served. The bar in the hotel was well stocked, although not very well staffed! Overall a nice hotel very centrally located.

    « Delightful stay »

The only problem I had was making the booking - a premium line which got through to hotel but not to reservations. I eventually booked by email. That's the only criticism. The room overlooking the walled garden was large and tastefully furnished. We had pre dinner drinks in the garden and some guests chose to have dinner out there. We couldn't fault the excellent dinner and although the breakfast was buffet style all the offerings were very fresh. The staff were all pleasant and helpful. The hotel is ideally placed right in the middle of this beautiful city but in a quiet narrow road just off the High St. Parking is limited but we had no trouble getting a space. Altogether an excellent experience.

« Another Enjoyable visit to Winchester Royal »

Our third or even fourth stay in this lovely hotel which offered an excellent deal which included both breakfast and two course evening meal. Comfortable and smart bedroom and super garden which unfortunately had a private function this year, so we were unable to sit out and enjoy the lovely weather in the evening....Staff, as always helpful polite and professional. Excellent position in the centre of Winchester.

    « Mostly good »

Positives: Lovely hotel , grounds and public areas nice. The breakfast was brilliant and bar drinks reasonable. We had no trouble parking in the hotel car parkour room was really nice . It was clean , huge bed and good facilities. Our only criticism On our first night it was a pleasant evening so after walking for hours we went back to the hotel to sit in the garden but was told there was a private function and we weren't allowed in the garden. The lounge was nice but hot and stuffy so we sat in our room( where the TV wasn't working). I would ask if there were any private functions with restrictions if I was to book again. Also our room was on the first floor facing a block of flats and there were no nets so we had to mostly keep the curtains closed which were blackout curtains so we had to keep a light on.

« Room good but falls short »

We stayed on a Saturday night in a nice suite (£190 B&B) which was very spacious and clean. However two things were a let down. The first was a laundry vehicle arrived out the front of the hotel at 5.45am Sunday morning to then proceed to load the hotel's laundry. The noise was terrible as the large plastic bins needed to be shuffled on and off an electric tailgate. Went on for 30 minutes! Not a great start to a Sunday morning. Secondly the breakfast was buffet style and poor. The sausages were cremated and the only eggs available were fried which were slopping around in warm water. Should be better. Nice people on reception, told them about the laundry issue.

    « A long weekend »

Comfortable room ,food good excellent location near city centre but very busy on our weekend. It was lovely to sit in the garden on a quiet ,balmy evening with very little traffic noise yet so near the city centre.

    « Outstanding »

As a coach driver, I arrived with a group of 20 European tourists on a 5 day British tour. The group organiser made himself known to the hotel staff and insisted he take full control of the check in procedure. He then proceeded to cause nothing short of chaos with the rooms allocated. He messed up big time. Alex the duty manager along with Jodie the receptionist along with what seemed to be the whole of the hotel staff that were on duty managed to sort out all the problems caused by the group organiser with great skill and professional manor. They did an outstanding job under extremely difficult circumstances. Thank you very much for a job well done.

    « 3 day Golf break.?????? »

Very clean & tidy professionally run hotel. Excellent breakfast selection , pre book this on arrival for discount rate of £10 per day We noticed that the even numbered rooms appear to have views over the garden & the odd numbers faced the car park. Secure car parking, £10 per day. Would recommend this hotel for a business or pleasure base.

Nice hotel in the center of the town for visiting Winchester be it for pleasure or business. Has a lovely garden, and is quiet. Decent rooms, comfortabel beds, good wifi. Decent campari however no possibility for reserving a space.

« Extremely comfortable stay, happy to recommend »

Enjoyed a very comfortable one night stay here. On arrival was allocated a top floor suite which was spacious and very well appointed. Lots of natural light from double windows, a very comfortable super king 4 poster baroque bed and a bathroom with a decent walk in shower. Room service dinner was good and buffet cooked breakfast offered a wide choice. In summary; a very enjoyable stay.

    « A friends wedding weekend »

Nice hotel very well positioned and on a quiet road. Staff were exceptional in dealing with demanding wedding requests (especially after a couple too many!) but they went above and beyond to please especially in light of them being under staffed. The bar and garden were stunning to relax and the food was nice. Our room was good but just missed a small fridge (especially as it was theonly summer weekend the uk has had so far!)

    « Great location »

This hotel is central and within very easy walking distance of Winchester so it makes an excellent base from which to explore the city and its attractions. We didn't eat in the restaurant, but the food being served to others looked and smelt appetising. The reception staff were friendly and helpful supplying us with free maps of the city and marking various places of interest. Breakfast was the usual buffet style with help yourself hot dishes and make your own toast as well cold items. The bedroom looked a little tired and would have benefited from being updated. The ensuite was very small, but both were perfectly functional. I would stay here again purely because of the location.

« Very comfortable and well organised »

We stayed for two nights over the Christmas holiday and were very impressed with both the facilities and the way everything was organised in what clearly was an exceptionally busy period. There was a call from the hotel two days before to confirm our needs - we only needed the room and breakfast as we we were with our family elsewhere in the city during the day - as were probably many of the other grandparents who were also in the hotel. The room was great - very clean with what looked to be all new fittings - and very comfortable and peaceful. Breakfast was an excellent buffet with a wide selection of everything you would expect to be available. The car parking is charged at £10 per day but is in the grounds of the hotel with spaces of perfectly adequate width and very convenient. On the basis that you get what you pay for as it could be considered to be quite expensive, we had absolutely no complaint and enjoyed our stay.

    « Great location »

The hotel has parking and is perfectly located in the centre of Winchester. The bathrooms are great, furniture a bit of a mis-match, rooms clean, warm, beds comfortable, good linen. The bar is rubbish, sitting room very old fashioned, good chairs but otherwise poorly furnished. The staff were very pleasant if not very professional. Liked it, it was good value and far better than the Mercure

« Good stay spoilt by all night party neighbours »

Checked bags in early so to reserve a car park space (parking £10 per 24 hours) Walked around Winchester Christmas market and then back to the hotel to check in. Room adequate but the smallest bathroom I've seen, if you bend over the sink your backside touches the opposite wall, still all toiletries available and shower fine. Dinner in the restaurant was good and the breakfast was a buffet which had everything you could wish for. My main concern was that my upstairs neighbours came back into their room at about 12.30am and were extremely noisy, there was certainly more than two people in their double room. I thought 30 minutes or so would give them a chance to settle down but by 1.15am it was worse with music also being played. I phoned the night porter who said he would take action, I heard the phone go in the room above and that was obviously action taken. My wife and I (on our 33rd Anniversary) tried to get some sleep but as the noise continued I once again I phoned the night porter at 3.30am The laughing and general noise upstairs continued until 5.45am when suddenly their door closed and there was silence. I approached the duty manager after breakfast and reported the incident(s) and asked to see the night porters report as he seemed to do very little, the manager said that he had not written any report about any incidents. This lack of hotel staff involvement spoilt our wedding anniversary which had promised to be a really nice stay.

    « A fabulous place to stay »

The Winchester Royal hotel is situated in the centre of Winchester.Ideal for visiting the Cathedral and the City Mill.Excellent for shopping. Very welcoming. We had a beautiful suite. Our rating would have been excellent but for the fact that our room was above the kitchen -which was a problem as we are light sleepers and there was a significant amount of noise both late and early in the morning. That said we found the hotel very good. Staff friendly. Breakfast was excellent. We will return. One word of warning - parking is a limited and is charged.

    « Disappointint »

Let's start on a positive ? the reception and restaurant staff were warm, welcoming and very helpful indeed and buffet breakfast was absolutely delicious and plentiful. That's where the positives end regrettably. We booked our trip almost 8 months in advance upon receiving the hotel stay as a gift (via ?buy-a-gift') and therefore, expected to be given the best (2x double) rooms available but alas, this wasn't the case. There are two distinct parts to the hotel ? the original old building which is interesting historically and the new section which is modern, bright and breezy. Having had to pay £15 per night supplement upon booking due to the ?hotel's refurbishment programme' we expected to be staying in bright, newly decorated spaces. Our rooms turned out to be in the old building above the reception area. It is possible that the rooms had received a lick of paint in the last year but they were far from refurbished - this could have been forgiven if the character of the rooms prevailed but sadly plastic headboards, strange old blankets and stained decorative bed cushions were the order of the day (we left one cushion on the floor with a note for the cleaner ? the cushion disappeared but was not replaced and no explanation was given by housekeeping). The two rooms we booked were slightly higgledy-piggledy, as you would expect from an old property - this in itself was not an issue as the sloping floors and quirky windows were fun. However, both rooms smelt very, very musty ? perhaps down to there being no extractor fans in the bathrooms. One of the bathrooms was absolutely minute ? there was no shelf or space next to the sink for one's toiletries so these had to be taken into the bathroom at every visit. Each time we showered the tray overflowed onto the bathroom floor. Shower mats were provided in both bathrooms but these were grubby and unpleasant and thus, weren't used by us (they would probably have made the shower tray's waste more problematic anyway!). The shower doors did not meet properly in one of the rooms and, where the cubicle was so tiny, the doors kept getting nudged open when attempting to take a shower thus soaking the tiny floor space. We had no choice but to shower with the bathroom door open and the bedroom became excruciatingly hot as a result. We requested an oscillating fan from reception in an attempt to cool the place down and although this was eventually provided, we were initially advised that there might not be one available. One of our rooms contained the fire exit door for the whole floor. But this door could not be opened to air the room and additionally, we felt obliged to continually lock all our belongings away in our suitcases to be prepared for a trail of guests in the bedroom during an emergency evacuation ? this also presented the issue of whether one should sleep clothed (which we decided to do) adding to the heat issue. The pillows on the bed were so hard that we used dressing gowns to try to soften them (to be fair the dressings were provided by the hotel ? however, we suspected that these had not been freshly laundered as, again, there was a musty smell about them). Slippers were also provided by the hotel. The dressing table in one of the rooms was set beneath the television rather than beneath a mirror so getting ready for an evening out was a mission as the only mirror available was on the other side of the room ? but with no electricity socket nearby. An additional irritant was to find notelets by the telephone with the previous occupants scribbles and no pencil/pen available (this only become obvious when we were trying to ascertain from reception which taxi firms to use during our stay). The room looked straight out into busy offices across the road and, as there was no sheer voil/blind at the window the heavy curtains had be kept closed for the entire time we were in the room (this didn't help the issue of the temperature in the room). Whilst we enjoyed visiting the city, we did not enjoy our stay at the Winchester Royal and felt very let down by the standard of the rooms we were given.

    « Premier - Really? »

Don't understand why this hotel has a Premier rating. The staff were brilliant but the rooms and food were average. I had to book through central reservations because no one answered the phone at the hotel then, despite the email confirming my reservation, the hotel couldn't find it when I tried to reserve a table for dinner. Then, during check out, staff had to print a second bill because, apparently, the computer had doubled up some or all of the items

« Great food, but bar was disappointing. »

Had a great lunch on Thursday, food very good and waiting staff very good. However, bar was very disappointing. Junior member of staff who didn't know his way around the bar, no alcohol free beer option and ran out of Guinness. Considering number of people at the hotel for lunch (there was a big party in one room) it could have been better stocked and more experienced staff behind the bar ( I know we all have to start somewhere, but a busy lunchtime near Christmas probably not the best time).

    « Beautiful room »

We've stayed in a few hotels but this room 118 was the best room ever! Staff very friendly, breakfast in our room so relaxing start to the day!. Only one little suggestion the menu in the restaurant could have had a steak on it to make it perfect.

« Lovely Hotel in Excellent Position »

Stayed here with a friend for a one night stay visiting the Christmas Market. Great position with a short walk to the Cathedral area (location of the Market). Terrific service with charming, helpful staff, nothing was too much trouble. Twin-bedded room, very comfortable, with relaxing decor and great facilities. We had afternoon tea which was very good, and breakfast the next day which was equally good. Every member of staff we met was friendly and helpful, and the hotel is very attractive, has a lovely courtyard garden with tables and chairs where in the summer it would be lovely to take tea.

« Great Hotel in a Fantastic position »

We stayed at this hotel (3 couples) for 2 nights and could not fault it. The position is excellent only a 5 minute walk to the town. Excellent breakfast, plenty of choice. We ate in the hotel on the first night & the food was very good. I have to comment on the 2 waitresses as they were lovely, big smiles which makes such a difference. We visited the Christmas market, Cathedral, Mill & The Gurka Museum and had a lovely time

Just returned from week end at this hotel ,my boyfriend booked for birthday treat . On arrival we were greeted by friendly blonde hair receptionist who after check in ,gave us details about Winchester and this was great info Our room was very comfy and throughout the week end we had no problems and we enjoyed our staff Only small comment staff seemed to be under pressure and could not always serve us straight away Hope to return soon

« Perfect for access to the city »

Perfect for seeing Winchester. Hotel was a minute walk from the High Street and less than 5 minutes to the cathedral. Once you have paid for the cathedral go on a guided tour which is free and on the hour. Really knowledgeable guides. Winchester City Mill is well worth seeing as is the City Museum. Everything is really compact in the city. We went by train and the station is only 10 minutes walk from the hotel. Hotel has limited parking spaces. Staff at the hotel were great as was the food.

    « Foxey »

Excellent central location at a reasonable price. The main hotel has old fashioned charm and the conservatory restaurant looks out over a lovely garden, I would imagine you may be able to eat there in the summer. I have not eaten dinner in the restaurant but breakfast is has a very good selection of English and continental, including fresh fruits, ham, cheese and yoghurt. The bedrooms in the new Annex are what you would expect from 3 star and are very clean and comfortable. The staff were polite and helpful. If you are looking for a nice place to stay in the centre of Winchester that is value for money I definitely recommend. My only complaint would be that they don't have feather pillows - I asked for just one but no they don't have any due to allergies - why should I forgot my comfort for the one person that has an allergy?

    « Chaotic and disappointing »

We arrived after a 600 mile drive from France and a 45 minute battle to get to the hotel from the M3. We could not park at the hotel. We left the car outside with the hazards on and went in. We were told by the curt blonde receptionist that the car parking was first come first served. She gave us a map of with a local car park highlighted which subsequently proved to be closed, I asked if someone could help us with our cases and a young man rather reluctantly appeared when called. Outside I unloaded one large suitcase and one small plus my suit and a couple of carrier bags. The young man took the smallest case and I struggled along behind with everything else whilst my wife drove off around the jammed one-way system to the mythical car park. The young man led me on a route match up stairs (no lift) and along a long corridor through three sets of fire doors. By now I was pretty mad. 30 minutes later my wife returned having found a space under a shopping centre after an argument with a bus driver. The room was adequate - a bit Holiday Inn - in style. (The toilet could have done with a serious clean under the rim, which you'll notice when you're sitting in the bath). It overlooked a second car park - with spaces - that the receptionist didn't tell us about, We went to the restaurant to be asked if we'd booked before being directed back to the receptionist to wait whilst someone else booked a table to be told that we couldn't have a table unless we'd pre booked it when we booked our room. THIS IS THE FIRST AND ONLY HOTEK IVE STAYED IN WHERE WE COULD NOT EAT IN THE RESTAURANT! We went up the road and found Zizi's (which I'd recommend). Thoroughly fed up with the place we passed the almost empty hotel restaurant on the way to bed to experience the £15 odd breakfast in the morning. This wasn't bad and the fried eggs had runny yolks (something the Holiday Inn at Shepperton are unable to provide). We attended the wedding and the next day after a Sunday roast at the Ruddy Duck before heading for a bottle of wine at the hotel bar. Tip: bring your own barman because this one kept disappearing whenever he'd served anyone to help in the restaurant. Queues kept building up and the under-18 boy had to keep running off to call him. I came away with a very poor opinion of the place. It's a small country town hotel with a massive extension on the back without the staff and facilities to cope. Avoid

    « Short break »

Visited here on the 29/11/2014 for 2 nights, can't really fault the hotel but nothing to rave about either. We paid about £110 per night for a decent room but did not seem like the superior it was supposed to be, still comfortable enough though. Had to pay £10 per day to park which is not great, also we arrived before 11 am and wanted to charge us £8 for the day because it was early. Then £10 per evening, so £28 for two days parking basiclily. Then to add a breakfast £15 each, we went to the old gaul house for breakfast at £2.99 each which was very nice considering how cheap it was. Also had to do a pre card payment no option not to, which seemed wrong. Would say great location though for the centre of Winchester.

« Ideal location for the City and Cathedral »

We met my sister for the second time at this time of year, mainly for the Christmas Market. We wanted a decent Hotel with car parking facilities, which is not easy to find here. Car park I guess takes around 25 cars and is at the rear of the Hotel protected by a barrier which requires a code to exit. We stayed on Sunday and by arriving around 11.15 we had a choice of some 10 parking spaces.we were not able to check in and found the reception a little hostile. One lady was too busy the other not able to access her computer to confirm our restaurant booking for that evening. We went to the lounge for coffee, no staff I had to search for someone! This continued, lunch came eventually, which was quite good. Our arrival at the bar at 7pm that evening we met a group of ladies waiting to order drinks, no barman! He eventually arrived and it took us 15 minutes to get four drinks! We had booked a deal for Bed, breakfast and two course meal which was £119. Good value but the menu choice was quite limited but our choices proved very good value, in fact all our food was very tasty and well presented. This included our self service breakfast, although we would prefer fresh tea not in flasks! Our room was on the ground floor and a good size. A very large comfortable bed, electric radiator, good bathroom and wonderful large white fluffy towels on a hot towel fail. We had a very large crack in the basin and the taps was loose, but all told a nice comfortable room. Or checkout was eventful. The additional bill came out showing 5 Jack Daniels, 4 Bailyes, 5 teas and 3 coffees. In fact we had two drinks from the bar a tea and a coffee? Apparently the system had a software problem!! Altogether a nice Hotel well located. Good food but very poor service. Put simply just not enough experienced staff and no management. No bottled water in the bar a s.

Chose this hotel because of TA reviews and wasn't disappointed. Hotel is steeped in history Rooms have been refurbished to a very good standard Our room was on the ground floor overlooking the walled garden Room facilities are excellent big TV. Lots of plug sockets. Plenty of tea and coffee 1 minute walk to the high street. Parking available at a small extra cost Winchester Xmas market was one of the best we've been to in England. Now planning a return visit in the Spring

« Not worth the money »

Arrived into the car park to find it was full. Had to walk into reception to ask if they could open the barrier. After driving around through the extremely congested one way system, we found a car park. Thank goodness it wasn't raining as we then had a 15 minute 'trek' back to the hotel. Upon arriving at reception, I attempted to check in. After asking my name 4 times and chatting with another receptionist, the lady asked me to go and sit down whilst she tried to find my booking. 15 minutes later, she asked me to return to the reception and I finally checked in. However, she then proceeded to tell me the room wasn't in the main hotel! I had to go back out onto the road turn left and walk past the car park to find the entrance. Several minutes later I arrived at my 'room'. This can only be described as a 'bedsit' with a view of a brick wall along with a shared bathroom! After showering in the shared facilities (that someone had kindly left water all over the floor) I proceeded out onto the road to walk back to the hotel for a Christmas party. The function was held upstairs in a large room with possibly the worlds smallest bar. A bar that served warm lager and not much else. Would I stay here again? Well, I would (if they paid me)

    « Christmas Lunch »

Have just visited here for Christmas lunch with a retirement group, 30 of us altogether. We had a private room, which looked lovely. The tables had beautiful white linen cloths on them and they were decorated with a paper garland in the middle. We had good quality crackers and poppers. There was a decorated tree at the end of the room. The food was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for the waiting staff. A brilliant Christmas Party was had by all. We will definitely look to book again next year.

« Good hotel located very close to shops and restaurants »

Unlike a few others here we didn't experience any problems. The room we had was spacious and the bathroom huge. Everything was clean and staff friendly. There was a single space in the car park which was lucky, however I was quite prepared to have to park in the public car park, which it does mention if you read the hotel booking details. It does have a lot of functions, when we were there a business conference was in progress, it didn't affect us in any way. Previous reviewers have mentioned wedding receptions being at the hotel. I know in the past I have stayed in hotels where weddings are taking place and they really are a nightmare. So I would avoid any hotel that is doing a wedding reception and evening party on a date when I might be staying.

    « Lovely short break »

My husband and I visited Winchester for a couple of days to see the Christmas market in the grounds of the impressive Cathedral and to do some christmas shopping. We booked a 2 night stay with breakfast at the Winchester Royal hotel through Traveloo with dinner included on first night. We had a very warm, quiet, comfortable room with large lovely bathroom. All very impressive for the price we paid. The food was good, with an excellent choice of hot and cold buffet breakfast. The staff were very helpful and polite and the hotel was just a short walk from the main High Street and the Cathedral. All in all a very nice stay in a pleasant hotel and I would not hesitate to recommend.

    « Comfortable room »

We had a 2 night stay at the Winchester Royal, having been several times before. The staff were friendly, the room {a garden view room on the ground floor) was quite comfortable, although it could be noisy, with quite a few banging doors, and noise from the room above. We only ate breakfast there as we ate out in the evenings. The breakfast was good enough for £10. Overall the hotel is in a very convenient location only a minute walk to the main street, yet on a quiet road. The garden is also lovely.

« Good stay at the Winchester Royal »

Booked this hotel as part of a Christmas special package for a group of 16 people. The hotel receptionists were very nice, but didn't at first realise that we would be taking mince pies and hot drink as we arrived which formed part of our package. Went though to have our hot drinks and pies but not quite enough to go around, so asked for more!. We presumed we could have a second one as well, but told we would be charged if we wanted more, which we thought was a little mean hearted. Hotel very nice, in a great location. Rooms a very good standard. We had dinner as part of our package as well, which was served to us in the Writing room, which was also very good. Breakfast plentiful and a good choice as well. We all enjoyed our stay very much, and would recommend to anyone for their stay in Winchester.

    « Dreadful customer service »

We booked for a Sunday night away, just to relax without the kids and have some time to ourselves. Our stay went as follows: - arrived at 7.30pm to find car park full so had to drive around looking for a public car park that allowed more than 4 hours' parking - restaurant full for the whole evening so couldn't have dinner and had to go out to a nearby restaurant - came back for a drink in the bar and waited 35 minutes for some lime that never turned up - waited to be seated for a long time at breakfast the next morning and eventually seated ourselves after being ignored by several members of staff - breakfast rooms were overcrowded with unpleasant and cramped tables holding uninspiring food. Asked 3 times for tea that arrived just as we had finished - at checkout, the hotel tried to charge extra for breakfast, despite it being included in our booking, although eventually relented - finally, we asked if we could leave a small shoulder bag for a few hours while we went shopping and we're told they had no facilities for left luggage. Of course not, because absolutely EVERYTHING for the staff at this hotel is too much trouble. - oh, the room was quite nice, but the service really wasn't! Definitely stay somewhere else.

« Good stay in Winchester for Xmas market »

Stayed here to visit the Xmas market in the city. Great central location, managed to get the last space in car park as hotel & city was really busy. Really nice hotel and room was good size. Dinner & breakfast as part of deal was nice. Hotel maybe needs a bit more TLC & more staff but good otherwise.

    « Disastrous afternoon tea »

Booked a la carte afternoon tea. Got few sandwiches, cheap shop bought scone, cheaper quality mince pie and totally tasteless fruit cake again a cheap shop bought one. Advertised menu consisted off selection of cakes and other sweet treats. Service was non existence with us having to hunt out sugar for our tea despite asking 2 members of staff for some. When we advised our dissatisfaction at the whole experience and not feeling that we wanted to pay the a la carte price we we given an email of the manager and told nothing anyone there could do as no managerial staff around. Very strong complaint sitting in operations managers in box so will see!

« We expected far Better »

we love Winchester and decided to stay for 1 night. The room in the old part was spacious and ok. The bed was clean and comfy. Nice TV and 2 nice cakes waiting for us. The bathroom was in need of repairs to the Bath Tap, the shower rail was loose, the bath needed re sealing and the panel around the bath was awful. The toilet tools ages to refill and the Hot water had to be run for 45 minutes before it starting warming up. The bath was chipped. Breakfast was ok, but the good quality food was only warm.At 0810 ten minutes after it open i expected Hot food. Come on, this is in a prime location. Car parking by the way is a joke. Car park full so had to park 10 mins walk away. We will not be staying here again unless they make changes. Oh Bar Bill was wrong by £14 too. Staf however were good and polite so thank you to them.

    « Avoid if possible »

The weekend we chose to visit Winchester was a busy one for the city, and we'd left booking to the last minute. Many hotels were already full, and we always get a hotel with parking, so we ended up booking at the Royal Hotel. The room was spacious, beds were comfortable and pillows soft. The breakfast, especially the hot English, was good, although a table or two could be moved from the middle row in the dining room so people can move without bumping into other diners. The Royal is also very close to everything in Winchester. But that's were positive feedback for the Royal Hotel ends from me. We arrived before check-in time and no early check-in was possible because rooms weren't ready. Fair enough, but there is no need to be rude and curt about it. Also, from the moment we arrived parking was a problem. Because we were early, if we were to put the car in their parking an extra day would be charged (minus a small discount so 8 pounds instead of the regular 10 pnds). But we were informed there was no space due to a large business conference which would be leaving several hours later. So we parked in a public parking down the road. When the meter ran (4hrs) out we called reception to ask if space was available in their car park; no there wasn't, the business people hadn't left yet and the receptionist couldn't tell us when they would leave. In the evening we asked again and then gave up trying to use the hotel's car park. If you must stay at the Royal Hotel I suggest you use the long stay over on Chesil St, cheaper than the hotel and no hassle (get there before or after business hours when it's less busy and sure to have space). Despite the positives above about the room, it didn't live up to its price point. We booked a feature double room, which for that 2 night weekend was over 500 euro. NO problem paying that price for a hotel room, but then I expect more than room 103 offered. It was of mediocre quality, the bathroom could have been a touch more luxurious, and was in fact in need of repairs. Also, cleanliness wasn't 100%, we found fluff blowing around the room, and the previous resident's hair in the bathroom. There was also a door nearby, or below the room that from around 6.30-7am kept banging throughout the day until very late. Upon checkout the receptionist, who was friendly (contrary to the check-in receptionist), said she would look into that. Then there was the wedding party. The Royal was rowdy from the moment they checked in, and all through the night while they partied, as well as at breakfast (which I'm surprised many managed to attend before 10am). I can understand people having fun at weddings, and hotel wishing to cash in on them, but EVERY customer deserves their comfort which means that if wedding parties are having fun, the other people who are there to enjoy some peace, quiet and time to regenerate, are not getting what they came for. Perhaps the Royal should avoid booking additional rooms when wedding parties are on. Finally, upon check-out we almost were charged for 2 nights of parking, so if you still choose to stay at the Royal Hotel, please check your bill before paying.

    « Decent Hotel »

Stayed here on a deal, which included dinner to the sum of £20. Room was clean and tidy. Enough toiletries in the bathroom and a couple of bottles of water alongside the usual tea and coffee tray. The hotel is ideally situated right in the middle of town, just a two minute walk from the High Street. Our only complaint was the speed of service at dinner (or lack of). The restaurant wasn't busy but we waited 30 minutes from being given our dessert menu (nothing explained about the menu or the specials board). The young lad gave us the menu and we didn't see him again. We had to ask to order, The dessert wasn't paid for so we had a 3 course meal for the price of 2. All in all, a good stay. And at nearly 50, we were by far the youngest guests there. The garden is lovely; even at this time of year.

« Nice place in a nice city. »

One night stay - good central location, clean room and en-suite, lovely big bed and a window looking out over the garden so also very quiet. Fantastic breakfast and helpful staff. Winchester has lots to see so I'd like to stay here again.

« Enjoyable stay, well located, good food »

Stayed here with a friend having secured a dinner bed and breakfast deal. The room and facilities were excellent. Dinner on the first night (included in our stay) was really enjoyable. Varied menu choices, and attentive service staff. Breakfast the next day was just a good with lots of choice and variety. Buffet options were replenished regularly and special requests handled professionally. The hotel is well situated and once we parked the car we only used it again as we left. Be sure to arrive early as parking spaces are limited and charged per day.

« Never expected this to happen twice »

I have stayed at the a Royal at least a dozen times over the past year as it is convenient for business. It has many flaws which I found more so on this occasion. My partner and I usually ask for breakfast in bed and complete the required form and place on the door. Twice now the form has not been collected in the night and our schedule has been put out as no breakfast arrives on time -.that's once we realise the form is still hanging on the door and won't be coming anyway. The hotel did on both occasions, waver the cost of the breakfast, but we would have preferred not to have had the poor service and received our requested breakfast and avoid the exasperation it caused - twice. To add to this, there are no pens or pencils in the room and we had to go back to reception to borrow one to complete the form the night before (although as described above that was a wasted journey). This is a four star hotel and one of few in such a popular city. There is no mini bar, no drawers, no water - in fact on reflection, one of the sparsest rooms on offer I have seen in many years of travel. We may use it again because of its convenience to our business, but I would not recommend it for other than that.

« Best Day of Our Lives »

Me and my new husband chose the Winchester Royal for our wedding day on 27th November and they certainly delivered! From the very beginning all of the staff were amazing. Kelly, the wedding coordinator, helped us all the way and we could not have asked for more - she was absolutely brilliant and the wedding wouldn't have been the same without her. All staff on the day were amazing. The venue was done beautifully, the ceremony room looked beautiful, and the Darials looked better than we ever imagined. Our room was huge, and spotlessly clean! All of the food was perfect, and all of our guests loved it as well. Cannot recommend this hotel enough - full of character, beautiful inside and amazing staff! All of our guests loved the hotel. Will definitely go back.

    « Ideal central hotel »

We stayed for one night here, ideally placed, within easy walking distance of central Winchester, shopping, cathedral etc. On first appearances, entrance and reception, looks dated, although is a very old building! The lounge/bar areas are comfortable and relaxing, the rooms were bright, modern and clean, staff friendly and breakfast excellent. Carparking available for a charge for use during your stay, useful in Winchester! Would definitely stay again.

    « Nice and simple »

We chose this venue for a team away day as we were sick of hotels which are the same the country over and lack character. Well this little hotel has bags of character, yet the bedrooms are still modern and well equipped. The conference rooms have the necessary facilities but there was some interruptions from the noise in the kitchen which neighboured the Hampshire Room. Perhaps other rooms are better but having one of the speakers from public areas in the room did make for some interesting background noise at times. The food in the hotel was very good with a hearty breakfast and a well run evening meal for nearly 20 of us - though they did quickly run out of our preferred wine. The staff were helpful - but not as slick as the major hotel chains - but then that was part of the charm.

    « Eleynor's Retirement Party »

We held Eleynor's retirement party for 20 guests in the Writing Room this afternoon. The room was nicely laid out when we arrived & the afternoon tea served was lovely. The homemade cakes went down very well with our guests. The only slight negative was the lack of hotel staff when we needed our teapots / coffeepots refilling. A member of staff allocated to keep an eye on a function would be our recommendation.

    1
« NOT A PATCH ON THE WESSEX!! »

Our party was split between the Royal and the Mercure Wessex due to room availability. Unlike the Wessex, the service was atrocious and nobody seemed to care, probably due to the wedding they had on. We dined at the Mercure on the first night and the food and service were second to none, unlike the Royal where the food was cold and awful which led one of the party to be violently sick two hours after eating the food. I just came to the conclusion that the wedding party were more important and the hotel guests just had to make do. It was great to be able to compare the two hotels over the weekend but all I know is, no one in the party wants to return to the Royal and Mercure won it hands down for us as a city centre hotel.

    « Time away »

Only stayed for one night but had a lovely time. The room was clean and comfortable and the fact that there were tissues for n the room added to the little touches that made the stay comfortable. The staff were friendly and welcoming both the in the bar area and in the restaurant. The food was delicious and we can thought the 2 meal offer including 2 courses and wine was excellent value. Will definitely be booking here again.

    « An expensive business.. »

I had to work in Winchester for a few days in October. A colleague had booked me into the Winchester Royal hotel. The cost for two of us for 3 nights was over £800. For that you expect something pretty good. I was to be sadly disappointed. Parking was an extra £8 per day and evening meals were a further cost. My room looked tired and the hot water supply was both variable and slow. You could grow old waiting for it to arrive. The restaurant was indifferent and breakfasts not much better than at a Premier Inn. The worst was yet to come. I was on business and there was a likelihood that I might need an extra night. I was persuaded by the reception staff to book the room for the extra night as I was told that they were very busy, but to let them know the next day if I needed to cancel. So far, so good ... I did need to cancel. I tried to ring them to let them know, but I couldn't get them to answer the phone so I returned to the hotel. Yes, I could cancel, no problem, but I would still have to pay £145 for the room that I wasn't going to use. I argued ( politely) but I was told that it was " policy". So, if you want to spend a great deal of money for old fashioned expensive and rather dated accommodation, I can recommend this place, but if you want value for money, I'd go elsewhere.

« Excellent mid week stay »

Stayed here for two nights recently and could not fault the hotel on any count other than perhaps the £10 per night car park charge. Our room was situated in a modern extension overlooking the garden. The room was comfortably furnished with a huge super king bed. The bathroom had gorgeous thick fluffy towels and nice toiletries. We had dinner included on the first night, which was so good that we dined again on our second night as we had not seen another restaurant menu locally to beat it. The situation of the hotel on the edge of the town centre shops makes it an ideal location for a break as you can walk to many places of interest and not have the hassle of driving. I would have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

    4
« Hotel of two halves »

The hotel is in the centre of the shops etc so easy to get to everything walking. It has parking but it's £10 per day. We didn't have trouble getting a space. It's an old building and has charm and character. Then it has an modern extension where we had our room. Room was good size, zip and link super king bed. Comfy mattress but sheet didn't fit, too short. Good duvet and pillows. Big fluffy towels. But no toiletries, just soap and we had no water or biscuits but we knew they had them as we saw them in the hallway in the morning. Heating was hit and miss, in the hallways too. It was freezing most of the time and then boiling hot. Restaurant was in what is basically a conservatory. Cold again and no at,lathered as there are no table cloths or curtains so it was very echoey. Staffing was also hit and miss. Constantly had trouble trying to find someone to serve at the bar, restaurant podium and at the table. When they did serve it was good and attentive. Wifi didn't work the whole three days we were there. No mains specials available even though there was a board for them. Second night out of 8 dishes 2 not available and 2 vegetarian. Which left little to choose from. Then they had run out of the chosen starters too. They compensated us with a free cheese board and an apology. But it was a Monday and the place was far from full so this needs to be looked at in the ordering department. But what food we had was excellent. Large glass of wine £6.25 so not the most expensive. Nice lounge area with soft seating. Lovely garden area, breakfast was the usual array of cooked and continental buffet selection. Hubby said coffee was good standard. But again hit and miss. First morning had to wait for 20 mins for hot food to come out. Plate warmer failed in its job. Second morning large queue of people trying to toast bread and getting it stuck and burnt. We would go back again as it was convenient and the Christmas market was on which was lovely. But we both felt it need more staff and this would have made all the difference. The deal we had was excellent so for that value I awarded it 4/5.

    « A good deal »

We got a good deal with travelzoo which included over night stay dinner and breakfast. Being a Sunday night the hotel was not full. We upgraded to a garden view room in the newer part of the hotel. The room was clean good size with a huge comfy bed. Bath & shower with plenty of hot water. Dinner was good with lots of choices served by a cheery young lady uni student from Bristol . Breakfast was good with yet again pleasant staff. This hotel is in an excellent location 5mins walk to shops restaurants and pubs but with a large garden that's very peaceful. If you manage to get a good deal would not hesitate to recommend this hotel. Thank you for a pleasant stay we will be returning

    « Wonderful stay again! »

Second time we have stayed in this hotel, it really is the best position of any hotel we have stayed in. 75m from the hustle and bustle of the city centre but situated in a quiet street. Our room was double aspect, clean, with an excellent standard of furniture. No flat pack rubbish. Quality bedding. Our shower was extremely powerful, the only downside being that one of the control fronts was missing and the ceiling paint was flaking, but believe me they were only small gripes. Dinner was beautiful, I had the Haddock, although not large was excellent quality. Breakfast was also of excellent quality. The staff are very freindly and attentive. We will definitely go back for another stay.

    « Enjoyable Stay »

This hotel is on the edge of the city which is walking distance into the town. There are plenty of sights to see and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the town. This hotel offered plenty of choice for evening meal which was served with care and good quality produce.

    « Afternoon Tea »

Two of my friends treated me to afternoon tea on Friday 13th November 2015 to celebrate my birthday. They had booked it over two weeks ago and stated that I have various food allergies, this they accepted, however, when the cake stands where brought out mine was sadly lacking in content and finesse . My friends' cake stand was brimming over with delicious looking cakes, sandwiches and scones and laid out beautifully, I felt rather neglected and short changed. One of my friends asked if I could have a bowl of sorbet and an extra sandwich which the staff arranged. I cannot fault the waiter as he was very apologetic and looked rather embarrassed. If the chef was unable to accommodate my dietary needs I would have been grateful if somebody could have contacted my friends who had booked it and they would have been able to arrange to go elsewhere. My friends couldn't fault their food but the afternoon was spoilt as they felt they had let me down terribly on my birthday treat. I have never written a letter of complaint before and find this very difficult to write.

    « Business Stay »

Stayed one night, good location in Winchester I still find it hard to believe, these hotels still want to charge £10 for parking and £12.50 for breakfast, is £105 a night for a single room not enough.... Hotel is a bit of a maze and was quite a walk to my room. Room was modern with a nice bathroom, only gripe was it was very warm and I stayed in October.

« Well deserved excellent rating »

Excellent ratings from me are few and far between but this hotel gets one. Good staff service from everyone from reception to waiting staff. Free wifi and good quality toiletries. Hairdryer is in room and there is s good size desk to work on with good lighting. Lovely shortbread and fruit platter much appreciated and initial complementary bottled water. Excellent location with car park at rear of hotel.

    « Expensive mediocre hotel »

We paid £195 for a 1 night weekend stay in a Deluxe Room B&B. We arrived to be greeted by a sullen and somewhat "depressed receptionist" who seemed stressed by the number of Wedding guests trying to check in. We asked for room away from all the Wedding function which was duly granted. The Deluxe room was clean and comfortable and the bed comfortable with a spartan array of bathroom goodies. The power shower was excellent and black out curtains ensured a good nights sleep. The Sunday paper we ordered did not arrive and we were told the receptionist has not added it to the list and it was an error. Breakfast was a 100% self service buffet affair we the usual heated dishes of cooked breakfast in addition to cereals and toast your own bread. In summary the location of the hotel is excellent being a few minutes walk of the town centre and from the Cathedral (wonderful to visit) but for £195 and £10 for overnight parking there are better places to stay next time.

« Good room, disappointing dinner »

The bedroom was attractive and a good size with two windows and views out to the hotel garden. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small with small shower cubicle, OK for one night. We had dinner in the hotel. The Garden Restaurant has little charm or atmosphere. There was a function on in the hotel and as a result service was very poor with long waits between courses. On complaint and request to see the manager a bottle of wine was presented, but no manager. There were no specials offered and when I asked for the fish on the menu I was told it was not available. The courses we had were unexceptional. Not a good experience all told.

    « Classy Place »

Very central and with parking (£10 a night), but also quiet. A nice building with a modern wing added with comfortable bedrooms. Nice breakfast space and decent buffet. Only minutes walk from the pedestrianised town centre and cathedral. A good choice in the upper mid range. Rooms overlook pleasant gardens.

    « Overpriced and disappointing »

Stayed here for the weekend with my boyfriend for the birthday and was a little disappointed with the hotel. The room was okay, and had recently been refurbished but was very traditional in the refurbishment that meant it came across as quite dated still. There was no refrigerator in the room which meant the complimentary water was always warm, no docking system for any music and also no air conditioning which resulted in the room being far too warm. The bed was very comfortable but our toiletries were not replenished each day, and the kettle needed rescaling. All in all I found the stay to be really disappointing and overpriced. The location however is good for Winchester town centre. If returning to Winchester, I would stay elsewhere.

« Why go to Prague or Rome when we have Winchester? »

Booked this city centre hotel through Travel Zoo and we were a little apprehensive that it may be a noisy location but we discovered a peaceful hotel with a secret garden. We stayed in one of the Garden rooms with a very comfortable huge bed and lovely calm decor. Its a brilliant location to explore Winchester without using the car and the Cathedral was just a short walk away. All the hotel staff were helpful polite and very welcoming and helped us to enjoy our anniversary break

    « Comfy bed »

Stay here for 2 nights during a business trip. The rooms are lovely size with the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever stayed in. Room was clean and good strong shower. Only real complaint I had was the staff during breakfast service were quite rude and miserable. Breakfast is also missing scrambled eggs and the fruit often run out. Would definitely recommend

    « A nice hotel in Winchester »

This hotel is very close to the city centre, yet in a quiet street with almost no traffic. Walking distance to the bus station. Very good service. Nice and serviceminded staff. The "Afternoon tea for two" was excellent. I will book a room here next time I am in Winchester :-)

« Lovely weekend at Winchester royal hotel »

I have just returned from a long weekend at this hotel. I must say I was very disappointed reading the reviews of this hotel before I went.I have to point out the hotel is amazing!! The location is very central and right on the doorstep of the city centre. Everywhere is easy to get to by foot. The hotel itself is very clean, all the staff are very friendly, polite, welcoming and approachable. The room itself was very clean, and was cleaned daily. The bed was also very comfortable, and had tea and coffee making facilities. It had a great bathroom with a lovely hot powerful shower. The breakfast was also lovely and there was plenty of it. It was served between 8-10am and never had to wait to be seated. There is also a car park which costs 10pounds for overnight parking and I had no problems finding parking space. I loved my stay at the Winchester royal and will definitely be staying there again!! Thank-you to all the team!!

    « Tiny portion meal »

We went to Winchester royal hotel for Sunday lunch. The meal was very nice but tiny portions. My starter was goats cheese walnut and pear salad. They had cut the pear with a mandolin it was so thin you could barely see it. There were no walnuts and I had to ask for some I was advised they didn't have any !!! My plate was taken for a renewed one and this time there were walnuts. My main course was oven baked hake which was lovely what there was of it a slice 1 inch wide. The veg was almost not there. 1 mange tout 3 baton of carrot the smallest floret of cauliflower I have ever seen. It would have fitted on a 10 pence piece. 2 tiny slices of courgette 4 new potatoes it would have fitted on a side plate. My husband had the same quantity of veg but a very good portion of lamb. The desert we chose was sticky toffee pud. Very nice but again very small. 2 inches square and a very tiny scoop of ice cream All in all if you are hungry this is Not the place to go. It was our sapphire anniversary. And my birthday

    « Sunday lunch »

Friendly welcome to a warm and welcoming garden dining room. Service was quick and efficient. I enjoyed the lunch but portion sizes were small for the price. Such a pity when you are promised a mix of seasonal vegetables to find arranged on your plate: 1 bite size portion of cauliflower, 2 carrot sticks with 1 mangetout arranged on the top, 2 limp thin courgette slices. How much nicer it would be to have a large selection in a bowl to help yourself. The potatoes were nice though.

    « Unbelievable ! »

Without doubt the worst hotel we have ever stayed at. Chaotic reception and staff that can't be bothered. We booked a car park space which was denied by reception. Booked into room 114 eventually for our worst experience. Lovely room but overlooking the car park and STINKING rubbish bins and a loud mouth chef who needs sacking. Worst night's sleep ever and woken at 4 am with noises from below. Have you ever heard of marbles played with beer barrels - No? well go and stay in room 114 and you will know all about it. Car park full of white vans by 6 am with drivers all shouting into mobile phones. We were booked to stay for 2 nights but bailed out after one. Chaotic breakfast with a broken toast machine and over cooked self-service, dreadful food. When we complained we had £30 taken off the bill but as my husband said - WE SHOULD HAVE WALKED OUT WITHOUT PAYING,

Good menu. ..not extensive...A bit disappointed not many Pasta dishes or steak choices. Ordered Red Mullet dish. ..It was gorgeous...So happy ...trio of ice cream. ..lovely ...coffee to finish... overall comfortable, relaxing...and very enjoyable. Lovely restaurant setting...and attentive waiters and waitresses. A lovely and relaxing experience....

    « If only I didn't need a pee! »

Only here for a wedding and reception so no room views. Staff were very organised and attentive. Drinks were reasonable if you stay away from the spirits. Food was very good and the general décor was great. So a great experience until I had to use the loo. An old food container catching drips from a urinal, towels that were dispensed in bunches as they weren't the perfect size, whilst falling over a 'caution - wet floor' sign that had been left below it. Such a shame, the 'outhouse' needs to be checked as well as the front of house!

« Advice about car parking needed and mediocre service and breakfast »

Hotel is a beautiful historic one very convenient for all of Winchester - the rooms are excellent and the housekeeping is superb. It lets itself down with the car parking - you must arrive early to park on site and off site parking is difficult, I did not try the Winchester breakfast because we thought it was a very steep price at £16.50 pre booked or £21.50 if not pre-booked. I have been in the hospitality industry for many years so I think I know value when I see it, The normal breakfast just about cut the mustard but for a hotel of this quality it is a let down. My opinion only. We were locked out of bar at 11.30 ish so the staff could "cash up" never had that happen to me either. All in all though value for money in an overpriced City

    « Would stay again »

I stayed here with my boyfriend for two nights over the weekend and it was really central for winchester, you cannot want a better location. My main bother was that our room had no temperature control. The room was really stuffy in the night and our room was above the road so I didn't want to leave the window open. I thought this was something that even budget hotels have and would have made the stay a bit more comfy. The bed is by far one of the most comfiest I've slept in and gets top marks. The tv was really awkwardly situated by the side of the room which was a bit of a let down but was still a nice big size. We ordered some food in the evening which seemed a little over priced but was nice still. The room was really clean and had good amenities in it. I would stay again but might ask for a room not on the main road if I needed a window open at night!

Much of this hotel is a new extension but it still has an element of real charm in the old common parts. The staff are excellent. The prices are fair. It is extremely well placed. Albeit a bit difficult to find without a good map or a satnav.

Stayed here on a night visit with my partner as a last minute decision. Absolutely lovely staff. We felt extremely welcome when entering and the food was on point. The night porter Curtis was extremely helpful and topped off the night with his humour and going out of his way to make us welcome! The room was lovely and we will stay here, if in the area again. Many thanks

    « A lovely romantic stay »

I stayed here with my husband in August, and we had a lovely night at the hotel. I think we might have had a sneaky upgrade, because our room was HUGE, with a little separate living room area and a lovely fruit and cookie plate. The bed was comfy and the surrounds were nice and quiet. The breakfast the next day was delicious as well! We booked with booking.com so got a pretty good price as well as a lovely stay.

    « Visiting Denise »

I came to visit my daughter who lives in Winchester. We stayed at the Winchester Royal Hotel - which is not only a lovely historical hotel (you can find the hotel's history labelled in the walls of the hotel) but also the location is great (right in the city centre). The restaurant and food aré also fantastic. The staff members were very friendly. We had a very pleasant stay and really enjoyed the hotel. However, my main major criticism would be for the room service. The cleaners did not satisfied our expectations for a four star hotel. For instance, we did not bring our personal hyginic products, as expected we were provided with these supplies by the hotel. However, they were very small and were finished by our second day. We expected to be provided with new ones - but this never happened. Also, the room cleaning was not great as they did not take away our dirty dishes and glasses, basically they did not tidy up properly. This issue would definetly make me think twice wether to stay in this hotel for a next time. Specially given the fact that in price wise of this hotel you would definetly expect a better service.

On arrival we was greeted with a warm & friendly welcome. Staff was friendly , hotel was lovely & very clean. Breakfast was very good with a nice selection of full English & continental. Our room was stunning & spotless. We loved the selection of hot beverages & the toiletries. A lovely touch was when my partner & I came back one cold evening to a warm room where one of the housekeeping had brought in a portable heater & turned it on ?? We loved our stay there & we will definitely go back & recommend. Thank you to all the staff there at The Winchester Royal.

    « Lovely stay for a wedding!! »

My boyfriend and I stayed here overnight at end of September to attend a wedding reception held here. we arrived fairly early on sat lunchtime as id read there was limited space. we did know there was an additional charge for the parking but the hotel is so central its well worth it. we were checked in by a lovely reception lady who said we could have the room as it was ready. it was in the garden block not a great view but the room was large beautifully clean and so close to the bar and garden we had no complaints. we walked out for lunch to the weatherspoons 5 minutes up the hill and met friends. the wedding was lovely held in the large function room and the evening was beautiful so we all stayed in the garden till very late, the 24 hour bar is a godsend. brekkie the next morning was everything you could need or ask for with masses of fresh cakes normal full English and lots of toast n nice things. we had a lovely time and would definitely stay here again perhaps for a little crimbo shopping.

« A special treat for my husbands 80th birthday »

This was booked by our two sons as a surprise for their dads 80th.A garden room was booked and paid extra for so that we would have a nice view. Three other rooms were booked for rest of family. We arrived about 1-30pm finding nowhere to park, not even a designated place for blue badge holders!!!! On checking in was told , yes a garden room was confirmed for us but rooms weren't ready so luggage had to be put in board room,so already a problem because of no parking!!!We sat in lounge because receptionist said she would call us when rooms were ready, and she had said the rooms were side by side.By 3 o'clock the rest of the family had arrived so my eldest son went up to see what was happening, and was given keys number 135 and 141!!!!!!!!next door to each other , I don't think so , and when our son checked our room overlooked a car park and an ugly nondescript building....no garden!!!!!! He went back down to reception ,not the most helpful I must say, only to be told the garden rooms had all been allocated and there was nothing they could do, so how come it was available earlier!!!!!!!Just organized chaos and most disappointing.Just glad as a family we didn't let that part of the surprise spoil his birthday, just glad they had booked the meal elsewhere. We came back and spent the later part of the evening in the lounge and this hotels bar must have had a good evenings takings from this ordinary hard working class family. The final straw was when my son asked for the refund on checking out he was faced with another "helpful " receptionist who found it very difficult to understand it was for the room we never had...and then had the gall....to take £10 back for overnight parking...disgusting. We have many brilliant places in Pagham , public houses and likewise all with character who do B and B and lovely meals and have car parks that you don't pay for and with disabled bays.I expect you can gather from this your hotel isn't one that I would want to return to, and probably never would. My son had looked you up on trip adviser and you came out one that he thought would be just right, sorry but not so.

« Not as good I we expected »

We often stay in hotels and were delighted to spot this one on travel zoo for £99 for an overnight stay with 2 course dinner included. On ringing ahead we were offered a seat in the dining room at 5.30pm ( we were not going to arrive until 6.30pm ish, or 9.15pm, this was the only options. We took the 9.15pm but were not really happy to be eating this late. The staff in the restaurant were very nice but you could see were rushed off their feet, the hotel appeared to be very full and busy. We ordered some bread and olives as we were very hungry, these took 40 minutes to arrive!! My husbands starter eventually arrived but was cold (crab cakes). We decided not to make a fuss as this was about 10.15pm and we really wanted to eat as we were very tired. The main course of pork was very nice but we were past wanting it by 10.25pm!! Again the staff were apologetic and very nice but the kitchen could obviously not cope with the amount of meals ordered. Our room was small and clean. (116). The room contained no mirror so I was not able to dry my hair very well, the only mirror is in the bathroom, this could easily be addressed. The bathroom had no where to put anything, make up etc a shelf really is required, also no towel rail which again is easily sorted. The toilet roll holder is directly behind you so impossible to reach!!! Sadly the car park was full so had to park quite a distance away, this meant getting up at 7.45am to go feed the meter!!! The room was very hot and by this time we decided to have an early breakfast and leave. Breakfast was good, self service and very busy. I rarely find reason to complain and I do hope this will help the hotel to correct some issues which I am sure affects other people.

    « 25th Wedding Anniversary »

My wife and I stated here for two nights this week as part of our Wedding Anniversary. Mostly we enjoyed our stay but there were a few issues. Although I rang ahead and made the hotel aware of our anniversary we weren't made to feel special and I had hoped for a room upgrade to be offered but this was not forthcoming. We used a Do Not Disturb sign and was expecting the room 'stocks' to be replenished with items left outside the room as per the hotel instructions. Unfortunately this did not happen even after asking reception multiple times for more towels etc. Another point to note is that although there are telephones in the room nowhere did it state what number to call reception on. The supplied iron in the room leaked and overall the design of the room was poor- the mirror was too high and chairs too low. We were aware of the high parking cost and prepared to pay it but I was not happy when checking out the "business" customer in front did not pay a penny for parking at all.. Although we didn't take an evening meal in the hotel the included breakfast was lovely and we recommend it. So to summarise, an enjoyable stay but the hotel needs some fine tuning..

    « Absolutely wonderful stay »

I stay in hotels about 150 nights a year so I am a bit jaded by the experience. However this hotel was wonderful. The location was excellent - right in the centre so an easy walk to the main attractions of Winchester. The room (in the garden wing) was lovely - a good size, enough work space, very comfortable bed and plenty of plug sockets. Breakfast was the best I have had for a long time, not just the selection but also the flovour of the items, a real change from bland chain hotel servings. The staff were all excellent too, very polite and helpful and genuinely interested. Broadband was ok but seemed a little slow, the wifi connection was good but the bandwidth and speed were limited. There is also a small car park on site. I will certainly be back.

    « All good things???. »

Just back of holiday and should have been checking in at the Winchester Royal a per usual as I have done since May but alas I'm forced to book elsewhere as my booking requests for October were met with deathly silence, So it's a good time to review once again after having in affect taken up residence for the best part of 5 months. Best way I think is to use my original review as a base The setting hasn't changed still as lovely now as it was in May, however having occupied many rooms each room has a different view. Try to get a room with garden views which are located in the new part of the building. Rooms in the older part of the building do have a certain charm to them and the ones I stayed in had enormous bathrooms the only downside is the shower settings seem to be super sensitive the transition from artic cold to molten lava type heat is tiny. Car parking in 5 odd months only had to park offsite 3 times, your best heading to the Parchment Street car park as that's the one which always seems to have spaces and the trek round the one way system if you can't find a spot in the main car park can be confusing. One last thing it would appear I had outstayed my welcome, so it would have been nice to know why after all I was only a low maintenance paying customer for nearly 5 months.

    « A really enjoyable stay! »

Despite their computer system being down the hotel honoured an online booking that did not get through. All facilities, food and service were excellent! Especially the meal deal! Really comfortable room. Can't wait to go back!

    « Loved it »

Room was lovely and clean, the bed was super comfortable. We booked Using a travelzoo voucher Which included a two course dinner, the meal was SO good! I would go back again just for the food. Breakfast was also good. would recommend to anyone visiting Winchester. The outside garden looked really nice, shame it rained when we were there so we didn't get to sit out in it.
