    « Definitely Worth a Visit »

Fabulous place. From arriving & seeing the impressive frontage, to our side sea-view room, we loved it! We booked half-board so took full advantage of the marvellous food. The breakfast buffet caters for everyone. Omellete, scrambled egg, bacon & sausage, fresh fruit, breads, cheeses (the local ones are really good) yoghurt, cereal, etc. The dinner menu is also very good. Saturday is a self-service buffet, but there are about 3 cooked meats to choose from and fish. ALL are good! On other days you make your dinner selection at breakfast. The choice has been good, and we have had some lovely meals (and wine!). The staff are friendly and welcoming, and genuinely happy to see you. We are so happy we came to Italy, and very happy we picked this hotel

« Viareggio is a lovely town, now old, but more art nouveau and a lovely promenade and long sandy beach »

Viareggio is a wonderful place to use as a base to visit other cities and towns. We were shown how to take the buses and which bus stops, times and how to buy tickets at the newsagents or stations beforehand. Our guide showed us not the hotel although they had the schedules. Nothing to do in the evenings. The resort does have a lovely promenade and a long sandy beach. For an old grand hotel I did not find the food up to standard for the evening meal. Especially the meat dishes. Tiramasu was just synthetic whipped cream. The hotel has a very nice bar area and restaurant rooms are very grand. The bedrooms have been upgraded but if you go in October can be a bit chilly.

« Step back into pure Luxury »

This hotel is over 100 years old and it is beautiful and elegant. We upgraded to a sea view room with a balcony which is at the front of the hotel. The room was very large with a high ceiling and great antique furniture. Big bathroom with massive old fashion taps. Great food in the wonderful dining room and attended on by the staff. One of the best hotels we have stayed in

    « Wonderful Experience »

This hotel is beautiful and elegant. All of the staff are extremely nice and helpful. The lounge bartenders and wait staff were awesome. The location is convenient to everything, right across the street from the ocean. We had a balcony facing the water and it was very enjoyable and relaxing. Would definitely recommend!

« Beautiful hotel, snotty staff »

I would recommend the hotel to anyone. The hotel itself was amazing, the views of the Med awesome and everything was spotless. Only downside was the hotel desk staff treated us like we were beneath staying there, and continued to speak to each other and answer phones while handing us our keys. I would not hire them for a customer service job, as they were rude aqnd obnoxious

    « Fantastic hotel »

Fabulous stay at this hotel . Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. From first seeing it from outside I knew we would love it . So handy for Pisa by bus and Florence by train. We were celebrating more y birthday and were upgraded to a side sea view room and bottle of prosecco was waiting for us . Some people said the food was luke warm but we asked Danielle for ours to be hot and it certainly was . Thank you to everyone for making our stay special

    « Elegant Hotel »

Just returned from a two week stay at "The Royal". A very elegant hotel which would be spoilt by modernisation. Our room was at the front on the fourth floor. It can be a bit noisy but the view makes it more than worthwhile. Every member of staff we came across was polite, friendly and very professional especially in the restaurant. Our room was cleaned daily to a very high standard (thank you Sylvia). The choices on the menu were varied and the food was very tasty and of a good standard but not always as hot as we are used to. Plenty of choices for breakfast but virtually the same cooked breakfast each day. We were with a Saga group and had a very helpful rep and managed to get out and about to see some fantastic places. Pisa and Lucca are reached by buses which stop right outside the hotel. If possible, Portofino is a must to visit and the reception staff will advise you.

« Good traditional Italian hotel in a old fashioned resort »

This hotel was presumably a grand residence but our room did not convert well for holiday accommodation. It was comfortable enough. the public rooms were traditional and gracious. The bathroom was small and we found the corner shower most unsatisfactory, not much room and a dodgy door. The food was excellent, the breakfasts were different, most enjoyable. Dinner, outdoors, was first class, a good way to end the day. The airport bus stopped outside the hotel and it also went to Pisa, as did another bus which went to Lucca. The railway station was 20 mins walk away from which one could travel further afield. Buses are cheap, air conditioned and really good fun. If you like beach life this coast is fantastic, great facilities.

    « A great conference hotel »

I organised a conference for 44 people 29th September to 2nd October. We had a wonderful time. The hotel is very elegant and the rooms were pleasant. Those with sea view and balconies were extremely nice. The food in the restaurant was good. We had our coffee and lunch in the garden which was lovely. All the staff were excellent and couldn't do enough. The support I had for organising the meeting was great and I would particularly like to thank Mariarosario who was my point of contact and we became friends during the months of preparation.

    « Honeymoon in Tuscany »

We spent a week at the Grand Hotel Royal for our Honeymoon in September. The hotel was Grand staff polite and very helpful. Meals were good although breakfast was the same each day.The hotel is situated on the main road opposite the beach and near bus and trains. We had a fabulous time and would make a return visit.

« superb food, hotel and views »

We arrived at night when it was lit up and it looked amazing, we were given a free room upgrade to a suite at the back, intially we were disapointed as we had hoped for a seaview and balcony, however it had great views of the mountains and was quieter than the front (which faced a busy road) so we actually had the better choice - if you book a room i suggest a rear facing one. The bedroom was decorated in a style befitting the grandeur and age of the hotel (some might call it old-fashioned) and very comfortable. The food was amazing, good breakfast choices with fruit, cereals, many different breads, cheeses and eggs/bacon etc. Dinner had a choice of 2 meat/ 2 fish and 2 vegetarian choices and was superb, a salad bar which changed day by day, a first course (soup/pasta etc), main course and a desert (the strawberry tart was wonderful) Overall a wonderful week (we booked through Saga and had a very helpful and informative representative)

    « Relaxed holiday »

Spent 10 nights in this hotel which oozed old fashioned charm. The hotel staff spoke English: were friendly, helpful and generally efficient. Hotel is well placed on the promenade but does mean there is road noise whether you are in the front or back of the hotel relaxing by the swimming pool. Viareggio has an extensive beach which is mainly divided into private territorial areas managed by beach clubs. The grand hotel has an arrangement with 'Annita' beach club which offers an extensive food and drinks menu, friendly staff as well as providing you with deckchairs and an umbrella. Be prepared for constant pestering by beach pedlars who could be persistent. Our sea view room in the hotel was large, very clean with a refrigerated mini bar. Bathroom large with shower over bath. Would suggest bring your own hairdryer as the drier attached to bathroom wall wasn't 'man ' enough to dry hair with length beyond your chin. ie ok for very short hair. During our stay there was a problem with the water smelling. Rumours spread through the hotel that fuel ? Petrol got into the water supply. Surprisingly management did not formally notify guests to explain or reassure. We would have expected a notice or letter giving information. Inevitably purchased bottled water from then to the time we checked out as the smell never completely went away. Breakfast offers cereal, breads, cakes, toast, preserves, fresh, tinned and dried fruit, pancake machine, continental cold meats and cheeses, fresh tomatoes, cucumber and often the previous evening's leftover desserts. Hot food consisted of small omelette, scrambled egg which resembled chopped omelette, fatty bacon and chopped 'hot dog' sausages. You can request other egg options. Service: waiting staff not always observant to topping up food, plates or cutlery - frequent requests or guests hovering waiting. Dinner in the hotel was a lovely occasion in a relaxed environment. Weather permitting it could be on the terrace. First course was a salad buffet. Then followed 'a la carte' for starter, main and dessert which could be pre-ordered at breakfast as menus were available. However not mandatory to pre order. We did not because likely to change our mind through the day. Food was good quality however frequently lukewarm. Conversations with other guests indicated similar experience. Despite the smelly water, lukewarm dinners road noise we had a good holiday.

« Everything you read abot this hotel is correct. »

This is a really nice hotel, quiet , well appointed, good food and really pleasant staff. The poolside restaurant at lunchtime serves simple food well,no frills yet reasonable prices.Coffee is something like euro two. This would not be a hotel for teenagers or those seeking a disco experience , but is a chill out for sensible adults.

    « Honeymoon »

Viareggo is a beautiful town, with a large promenade of shops next to a lovely beach. The hotel is one of the nicest on this promenade and is very striking to look at. It's old and grand style is well kept and the staff are all lovely. Beautiful food and a great array of choice for breakfast. We had a lovely sea view room that was large and spacious. The pool area is lovely and big with a great pool side bar for drinks and lunch. A high light was the lounge area in the evening that serves lovely cocktails from friendly staff. The demographic of clients in September is a lot older and not really suited to a 'honeymoon' however we had a lovely time.

    « Holiday »

My husband and I spent 10 days at this beautiful hotel and could not fault it at all. The location is perfect, all parts of the hotel spotlessly clean, the food is delicious and the staff are wonderful. Viareggio itself is a beautiful place and it is perfect for sightseeing from. I will definitely return to this hotel.

    « Disappointment »

This place was recommended highly by relatives. However, they have got a deal going with Saga which means that anyone else, who are paying Eu200 a night, cannot eat dinner in the restaurant which has about 60 tables. Reception say "ask Restaurant Manager" who says "ask Reception". Thoroughly unprofessional. Would not have booked, had they stated this on their website. Would definitely not recommend this place. Has appearance of being 5* but doesn't live up to it. Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, oil is leaking into the room's water supply, so it's like having a shower in a water/diesel emulsion. Reception said it was fixed, but it wasn't. Took cup of smelly water to Reception and the other receptionist said they knew what the problem was and it would be fixed at 06:30 the next morning when they will empty the hotel's entire system. We're not to drink the water, but they haven't told the other guests.

« Best kept secret on the Tuscan Coast »

This hotel stands on the promenade view wonderful sea views and facilities which are wonderful. The staff are very professional and experienced. Food and wine which is as good as anywhere you have been in the world. Grand Royal looks and feels comfortable with all the facilities you wish for, good sized swimming pool, pool bar and two large restaurants. We had half board and this worked well for my wife and I

    « A week in the sun »

A lovely Hotel, which still has its original features. I chose a room on the side of the Hotel because the front of the Hotel is on a main road. The Hotel is air conditioned and has a nice garden and swimming pool manned by a lifeguard. We visited Lucca and Pisa by bus, very easy to use the local buses, just buy your tickets outgoing/return from the Tobacco shop. The bus to Lucca is situated at the back of the Hotel (not across the road) and the bus to Pisa is just across the road from the Hotel. The food I would rate 7/10.

« A hotel with old world charm »

We stayed here for a week. Check in was speedy and efficient. We were upgraded to a sea view room from a side sea view and a bottle of Cava with a card from the manager was waiting for us as we were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary which was a lovely touch. The sunsets from the room were beautiful. The room was a lovely size and the bed was huge! The staff were pleasant, helpful and efficient. Breakfast was served in a large beautiful dining room with a domed ceiling. Plenty of choice for breakfast. Only complaint was about the temperature of the coffee served, a bit on the cool side of hot. The evening meal was outside, surrounded by greenery with a large awning above. Was a lovely atmosphere. The staff are very attentive and the food was top notch. If you can help it don't get a table by the buffet as people keep kicking your chair as they go by - irritating!! The pool area was peaceful and always had plenty of sunbeds available. The snacks by the pool are more expensive and less choice than the beach cafe so we tended to go there for lunch and then stay on the beach afterwards. Went to Pisa which is about 35 minutes on the bus which you catch on the other side of the road so very convenient. All in all a wonderful stay at this hotel and I thoroughly recommend it

    5
    « Five star service »

This is the third time we have stayed at this hotel. The hotel is elegant and spotlessly clean, as was our room. This year we felt that the evening meal was of a higher standard from our previous 2 stays. The standard of service is extremely high with friendly staff who cannot do enough for their guests, they really make the hotel a special place to be. we will be back at some time.

    « Exceeded expectation »

My teenage daughter and I had the most lovely few days before she returned to school, and could not have had a better time. The hotel and staff were thoroughly charming and the food and service were of a very high standard. The location was ideal for getting around Viareggio itself, cycling along to the other seaside towns and we even took the train to Florence for the day - all very easy. The local restaurants were amazingly good in terms of quality and at very reasonable prices. I will definitely return and hope that the hotel retains its old world charm in the meantime. Thanks again to everyone who made us feel so welcome from the moment we arrived to the second we departed with some reluctance. We'll be back.

    « Grand Hotel indeed »

What a fantastic week we've just had back at our favourite hotel . The hospitality was once again first class from the management to the cleaners everyone is so pleasant & polite making you feel very welcome . This time we had a room on the left side (facing the hotel) which we really liked as it was nice and cool morning & evening . The food at the hotel is excellent from the breakfast buffet to the 3 course waiter service dinner expertly managed by Emanuelle & Daniele you can also have a delightful lunch at the pool bar while being looked after by Andrea & Renato. A nice way to relax in the evening is to have amazing Cocktails out side the front of the hotel made by Head Barman Guiseppe and brought to you by Sasha who is a very pleasant and friendly young man & a credit to the hotel . Already looking forward to our 5th visit in two years time

« Great Hotel direct at the beach »

The hotel is great. Perfectty located direct at the beach of Viareggio! The staff is nice and the room was also totally ok. The breakfast was also extremly good for an italian restaurant and I also canßt complain about the offered dinner. The Pool of the Hotel is also great, although it was a liittle bit loud because of the near street. I will come back next year by 100%

    « Return after 35 years »

We first went to this hotel 35 years ago, we loved it then and we loved it this time around. Not cheap but save the pennies and go there. Not a football shirt in sight. This resort is for well heeled Italians and anybody else with a few quid. The shops are very expensive a pair of Gucci ankle boots 650 Euros and a Rolex Cellini watch 10,000 euros, save hard or win the lottery.

« Excellent hotel - pity about the chairs! »

This is a grand, Belle Epoque hotel, Italinate in style, in an elegant and attractive town much favoured by Italians themselves. The hotel is comfortable with a pleasantly "old-fashioned" feel - ie, it had not been "boutiques". The food is excellent and the staff, particularly those in the restraurant, are helpful (but see below!) and friendly. (We were uograded to a sea view room without requesting it.) The train station is 15 minutes walk away and buses stop outside the front and at the back so that trips to Lucca, Pisa and other places are easy. The beach - beach fees were included in the price - is across the road. However, the chairs in the otherwise pleasant garden near the pool are hard and wooden. This is the one, literally, uncomfortable, item in the hotel. The hotel will also offers its own taxi service to and from Pisa airport, which costs 15 Euros more than an ordinary cab and the staff pretend to know nothing about ordinary cabs. (The bus also runs from the hotel to the airport.)

    « Third visit »

Superb Art Deco, stylish hotel with services and food to match. Friendly staff, excellent choices of food(including gluten free) for all ages. The restaurant is stunning and deserves a mention. But, The dress code for dinner needs to be enforced, smart casual, no jeans or shorts is a fair requirement to expect, fortunately only few ignorant people seemed to ignore this common sense requirement. The accommodation is very good, the location, opposite the beach is ideal and the large hotel pool is attended by lifeguard. A great holiday hotel within easy reach of Pisa, Lucca and other interesting places. Will visit this hotel again.

« Second visit as great as the first. »

This is our second visit to the Grand Hotel and we were welcomed back very warmly by staff. It was lovely to see all the familiar faces were still there and a special mention must be made for Emmanuel and his wonderful resturant staff. Nothing is too much trouble. One of our family has a gluten intolerance and Emmanuel made sure that each meal was adapted so that she could enjoy the menu. The same with our two other children who did not like some of the menu choices. The meals were adapted to their liking. This is the first time we opted for half board and the food was lovely, service was quick and the waiting staff were fantastic. The pool area is wonderful, overseen by Massmo, who goes out of his way to help everyone find the sunbed of their choice and who keeps the pool looking pristine every day. Our rooms were overlooking the sea and the Hotel made sure our rooms were next to each other and, as one of our children has special needs, this was very important. They are a good size and very traditional. As we were at the front of the Hotel and as it is situated in the most central spot, there can be some noise, but its in such an ideal position for the wonderful array of shops this is unavoidable. It was also great to meet up with several friends we made last year, who also return on a regular basis. In the evenings we sat outside in the bar area which has a huge variety of cocktails and which stays open for as long as there are customers. Outside the Hotel gates is a bus stop where you can get buses into nearby resorts. The best of which is Pietrasanta. Well worth a visit for beautiful architecture and interesting exhibitions of artwork. Restaurants here are very good and there is a great square where you can sit at the many bars and watch the world go by. Cannot wait to return next year.

    « Another Fantastic Holiday »

This is the 6th year we have stayed at the Grand Hotel Royal and yet again all our expectations were not only met but exceeded. The hotel is welcoming from the moment you arrive, the rooms airy and bright with excellent views. The food was even better than last year and every evening was a fine dining experience, lots of choice and even if there was nothing your child likes, they will always amend the dish to suit your requirements. All the staff are helpful and friendly and will do what they can to ensure your stay is comfortable and enjoyable. Thank you for making our holiday fantastic.

    « semplicemente il migliore »

This is the 2nd time we have been here, and it was just as good if not better than the first time. We came this time with friends, who were just as impressed as we were. Its a lovely stylish Italian hotel, we were half board, the breakfast and evening meal were exceptional, plenty of choice, and for most nights for the evening meal we sat outside, with a lovely ambience. We also used Bagno Annita, we had a free pass from the hotel, for 2 deckchairs and an umbrella, this was also really good, well worth visiting. But what makes it the best is its staff, from the porter to the hotel manager, they are all there to make your holiday enjoyable, the waiters, bar staff, front desk and the cleaners, are all approachable and helpful. We cannot recommend this Hotel highly enough.

    « Old school style »

Lovely three day stay at the Grand Hotel at the end of August with my friend. The hotel gave us an upgrade on check in (although the room was not particularly big so I wonder what we would have received otherwise!) Highlights were definitely breakfast, which was plentiful. Huge array of food, and fresh tea/coffee from the waiters. The pool was very big and always plenty of sun loungers available, and it was nice to have a bar available serving drinks/cocktails/food. The garden was very pretty and nice to have hammocks and budgies! There is a beautiful outdoor seating area for evening dinners which we saw on Sunday night, so booked a table for our final night. However, this was served in the breakfast room on Wednesday, which had a distinct lack of atmosphere and fairly slow service coupled with a very disappointing buffet for 12euros per head (perhaps included for free if you're full board). We realised the desserts from the evening before became the next day's breakfast! Had the dinner been served outside it would have been a far nicer experience but we were in and out within the hour so this was fairly disappointing - would recommend eating out if you're only half board. Overall it was a great hotel - very grand but not stuffy, everything was clean, staff were very helpful and friendly, and if you enjoy a big breakfast it's worth it for that alone!

    « Delightful stay »

Stayed for a week and thoroughly enjoyed it. My room was large and had everything you could want (it had fantastic tiles on the floor and traditional shutters which were a highlight), my only small criticism is that the beds are a little hard for my taste. It was spotless both in my room and throughout the hotel. The facilities were good, the pool was nice and the staff working around it were very friendly. The restaurant food was good and the waiters were fantastically friendly. There were gluten free choices and there were good vegetarian choices for the buffet and starter courses but there could be a wider selection in the vegetarian main course. Finally the reception was also very helpful and even provided us with a print out of the train and bus times. Overall this is a very good hotel and i would urge others to stay there.

    « Perfect..... Almost....... »

Our fourth trip to Viareggio and we drive from England, a great car park for the cars which is secure and enough space. Every other year we have stayed at the Principi, however i feel that it has gone down hill and far to expensive. Tried the Grand hotel and had a sea view balcony view. The bedroom was hard to fault, the bathroom was small but ok... the shower door was broken and hanging and im sure they knew about this, and it doesnt really bother me so i just left it. Breakfast amazing, wide choice and friendly staff. Hotel clean and everyone polite. I only had a pizza and a chicken shnitzl at the pool bar, which i would say needs a bit of an overhaul as i think its just frozen and re heated, but ok to fill your stomach, and not so important. Overall yes i will 100% stay here over any other place in Viareggio, loved it and will definitely return.... especially for the pancake machine in the Breakfast area!!

    5
    « Grand Hotel »

It is an oldschool grand hotel, spacious rooms (our room 325 is approx 30sqm), very nice staff, like you are in 1925. The location is perfect, just by the sea. Breakfast is also reminds the great old time of elegant ladies and gents in early 20th century. The pool is nice and deep, you can do serious swimming :)

« Excellent hotel makes an ideal base for seeing Tuscany »

This is the seventh time we have stayed at this hotel which gives you an idea what we think of it. The staff are attentive, the food superb; there is a good size swimming pool which is not over-crowded - I was able to do my daily 10 lengths without difficulty. The airconditioning was good and kept the temperature down. The location is ideal for touring around either by bus or train and the beach is a two-minute walk away. I would like them to improve their internet connection which was quite slow, but this is being a bit picky and of course not everyone wants to access the web. Overall I would come back to this hotel again next year (we probably will!). We met two couples who have been coming back for over 10 years. Certainly recommended

    5
« Colonial style with a touch of class »

The hotel still retains a touch of class and grandeur to the public areas. The high ceilings in the corridors and rooms keep the rooms cool despite the warm temperatures outside. The Royal dominates promenade of Viareggio amongst other impressive period hotels. There is a decent size pool and ample sunbeds. The breakfast agave a wide ranging choice of good quality food, to which you serve yourself. Staff were pleasant and helpful, with a good command of English.

« Hard to fault, although a different experience than most mainstream hotels. »

Beautiful old fashioned hotel, with excellent service and good standard of cleaniness. Friendly staff, although the management are very focuused on the commercial aspects, and whilst booking direct is normally the best way to get a good price in this case its well worth having a good look on line as prices do vary. We were a bit disappointed to have paid full whack booking direct, when other guests and recived the same deal but a lot less cash. We however did enjoy all the facilties, especially the pool, less so the Beach, the "rules" are rigourously enforced, you get an umbrella and deckchair, Not a lounger and only in a specific area... It was an uncomfortable experience to be escorted off the beach as I had laid down on the wrong type of seat, and wrong area!! I have to agree with other guests that I found to be very off putting about this hotel is that although check out is 11am and you can still stay and use the pool, there are no showering facilities. I must admit I have never come across this issue in any hotel of this standard anywhere. Be it Italy or any other country. It would enhance the guest experience, but maybe not generate any revenue if there was a modest area for guests to wash and change. Overall, we had a lovely time and we would consider coming back but only if we were able to get a better deal in the price, and if we could shower and change before leaving on a late flight. Dont be put off by this review, the hotel is wonderful in a genteel way, and has a good location with super staff .

    « Perfect »

This is a beautiful hotel, clean and well looked after, with a feel from a bygone age when quality and style were still in vogue for hotels. Check-in was friendly, efficient and welcoming. The room we had took in a view of the see and the stylish Art Deco promenade of Viarreggio and was spacious, clean and well looked after, as was the bathroom. Breakfast was taken in a spectacular dining room with something for everyone's taste, right down to the automatic pancake making machine. The pool area was well looked after with a permanently manned bar area for drinks and lunch. Viarregio is a lovely stylish little town, nice restaurants, bars and shops but not too noisy, just right, and the hotel is situated just across the road from the promenade and beach. Guiseppe in the bar has an immense amount of knowledge and good humour, just asking what type of drink we liked then coming up with our signature cocktail which became our Guiseppe Special it was so good. We noticed that many of the guests were repeat customer, and it is obvious why, we would definitely return some day.

« Italian old world charm. »

If you look at the outside you can work out the inside. Well kept and well presented with friendly, courteous staff. Our room was large and airy with a well appointed bathroom. Maybe those used to more modern hotels would find the hotel lacking in some respects, but we loved it.

    5
    « Old school elegance »

Lovely old school hotel with great service throughout. Spotlessly clean, spacious and charming. It overlooks the sea but also has its own good size pool if you don't want to be bothered with all that sand and prefer a pool side bar!.

    « Loved every minute »

We arrived late Saturday evening and were given a warm welcome and an upgraded room. Throughout the week the staff were friendly and attentive. The maid made the room look brand new on a daily basis and the waiters always greet you with a smile. Each day you can discuss the evening menu and make adaptations if needed (one person in our group is vegetarian). Without doubt i will go back and i would highly recommend the hotel and Viareggio.

this hotel has such beautiful location and building .. its pretty old but has a charming feeling about it .. i love the old reception with the wooden boxes and the vintage feel all around .. has a great garden and pool area with hammock and relaxing chairs. my view was that the hotel does look vintage which is a good theme but its kinda done weirdly or lazily done it looked dirty and old like bad old .. breakfast area was great with piano playing was amazing the food varaity is good but most things had meat in it which could be hard for vegetarians or people who simply dont want meat in their meal to enjoy the buffet .. all in all was a different experiance we loved it and would love to see it renovated with a more clean vintage/modern look

    « Wonderful week »

My husband & I recently spent a week here, (our first holiday without children), and had a truly wonderful stay. The hotel is grand in style, but it's charm lies with it's welcoming staff, and excellent, and understated, service. This is a hotel where guests return year on year, and I can see why. Long standing staff members have become familiar faces to their regular customers, and greet them with genuine warmth. It was lovely to see Italian grandparents bringing their grandchildren, probably returning to the hotel where they have spent many holidays over the preceding years. It has a very comfortable feel, welcoming all ages and family groups, or couples, and visitors from across the world. The room was spacious and beautifully cool, which was much appreciated after hot & lengthy sightseeing trips, and the pool area was just perfect for relaxing. We loved the option of sun or shade here, and the pretty garden area, which added to the tranquil feel. The location is perfect - indeed, the hotel is a landmark building on the promenade - so easy to stroll out and explore the beach bars & shops just a few steps away. A big bonus for us was the accessibility of the train station. A 20 minute, level, walk, away from the hotel, allowing quick travel to numerous locations. We visited Pisa, Florence and Lucca, and found the trains frequent, clean & cheaper than the UK (despite the poor exchange rate!). Lucca was probably our favourite, being a shorter, more manageable, trip than Florence, and less well known than Pisa. Plenty of pretty trattorias in the Piazza, and good shops for a range of local produce. Our package (booked with Jet2), was Half Board, so we were able to take advantage of the extensive buffet breakfast, and the excellent evening meal. All dishes were consistently good, but the fish choices were exceptional. Overall, a fabulous week away, and a great place to stay.

« Back again. Simply the best. »

Loving the Grand is all about loving life, having stayed here a number of times it was pleasure to return and be welcomed with the same attentive and dedicated staff. Spending most of the day at Bango Annita then have a long cool drink "Campari Soda" on our balcony, watch over the Passeggiata it doesn't get much better. Dining outside in the cool shade of the Grand was as always just perfect. Great weather great food great company. Thank you again.

    « Great family holiday »

I had read some of the earlier reviews of this hotel before visiting it with my family, but approached it with an open mind. I was pleasantly surprised. I've stayed at a few highly-rated, and very nice, country house hotels in the UK. They're usually older properties, not all the rooms are the same, they're a bit quirky. But the food and service are usually excellent. The Grand Hotel Royal is a bit like this, only on the Tuscan coast (i.e. with decent weather). We had two rooms, both with air conditioning, and both a bit different to one another. We didn't pay for a sea view and didn't get one, which was not a major issue to me. My only complaint about our rooms was that the beds were rather hard. We stayed on a half-board basis and found both breakfast and dinner to be very good, with a good choice of options for both. Breakfast was a buffet arrangement. During our 7-night stay, dinner was a carvery on one night and off-menu for the other 6. We found the large pool area to be very pleasant and also the hotel bar, particularly sitting outside. Without exception the hotel staff were polite, helpful and efficient. On arrival we were given tickets for free access to a private beach on the opposite side of the road (including deckchairs and umbrellas, but not sun-beds, which we decided we didn't need anyway). Overall I would rate this hotel highly. Don't expect a modern, city-centre hotel. It is something a bit different to that, but we loved it and would definitely stay again.

    « Disappointing, but, clean & comfortable »

This is a difficult review because overall this is a disappointing hotel stay. There is no way this is a four star hotel. It is best a motel. The bar closes early ( before it's advertised time). There is no room service after this. The internet is slower than a dial up modem. There is no tea / coffee in the rooms. So. It's not worthy of four star - and annoyingly the extra tourist charge associated with it being rated four star. It is however clean and comfortable. The rooms are big. The shower is fantastic - literally chisels the sweat and grime off you. So. I suppose it depends on what you want and expect. I expected more but I got the basics at a price.

Hotel is old world and has lots of charm. The ground floor areas, bar, reading room, restaurant/breakfast room are excellent and the staff are friendly and efficient. In the summer months the hotel uses covered outdoor garden area for evening dinner which is also very nice. The food in the hotel is excellent and not expensive. The bar prices are very reasonable. The only negative with the hotel is the bedroom quality and decor. We paid extra for sea view room had to seek a change of room as the first room offered was rather small and in need of decorating, the bathroom was extremely small. The rooms do not represent the overall quality of the hotel which is rated as 4 Star. Room cleanliness and daily house keeping was very good. You have to pay for car parking within hotel grounds(€15 per day). A road divides the hotel from the beach and you must pay extra for sun beds and brolly at private areas of beach. Hotel has a special rate of €20 per day for 2 sun chairs and a sun brolly. Local restaurants are good but a little on the expensive side and wine tends to be overpriced. Lots of nice shops along the sea front.

Stayed here many times over the years, still as good as ever. Location brilliant, lots of places to visit within easy reach. Staff friendly as always and good to see many of the same faces, especially the lifeguard! Service good, rooms very bright, spacious and clean. Breakfast plentiful and lots of choice. Will definitely be back again.

    « Nice »

We stayed at this hotel for 6 nights. Our room was on the first floor, sea facing and of a good size. The aircon was nice and quiet and there was good wardrobe space. The bed was super hard but after a couple of nights, you'd get used to it. The bathroom was also of a good size with all the amenities you would need. There is a safe and a minibar (which can be used to store your own drinks/fruit in). The hotel is in a very central place on the beach promenade(with a great Gelateria and sandwich place right opposite) and the building is beautiful. It has lovely gardens and a very nice and large pool, with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. Pool towels are provided by the maid in the room and changed daily. There is also a ping pong table and a fusball table by the pool. There is free wifi but the signal is very weak. Even though our room was almost right above the lobby, we often didn't have signal. Breakfast was the best we've had in Italy. Lots of choices with a pancake machine and lots of fresh fruit. However, the service at breakfast is very poor. Although there is no lack of waiters, it takes forever to get served and nothing ever gets cleared off your table until you leave. We also had dinner once at the hotel and were really not impressed. Had salad for lunch a couple of times and the portions are very small. More the size of a side salad. The front desk staff though are lovely. All very nice and helpful. If you have a car, you can park it on the hotel grounds for 15euros per day but is costs less to park on the road. The hotel also has bicycles for hire. These cost 3euros for 1 hour and 8euros for the day. If you can't get hold of any bikes, just behind the hotel, there is a wooded area with lots of rides for small children, where there are also plenty of places that rent out bikes at the same sort of prices. I would really recommend getting a bike even for just a day as there are good cycle lanes in Viareggio and the surrounding area. The only thing that I found to be very off putting about this hotel is that although check out is 11am and you can still stay and use the pool, there are no showering facilities. I must admit I have never come across this issue in any hotel of this standard anywhere. Be it Italy or any other country. Overall, we had a lovely time and we would come back but only if something is sorted out so that one can shower and change before leaving on a late flight.

    « Our 20th year »

2016 was our 20th year staing in this lovely hotel. On our second evening my huband developed acute stomach pains and asked for a Doctor. The Doctor was escorted up to the room by Francesco from the reception desk. Francesco translated all the Doctor said. An ambulance was called and in no time 5 medics arrived, my husbfand was put on a drip, they continued with their checks, all the time Francesco was translating information to me and back to the medics. My husband was taken to Triage at Pietrasanta Hospital, and later was diagnosed with having Gall stones. Communication was difficult as I can shop in any language but medical translation is a problem. When I got back to the hotel at 1.30am. in the room were sandwiches and a bowl of fresh fruit. Very thoughtful. The next morning Mariarosaria (Assistand Manager) telephoned the hospital to find out how my husband was and again at lunch time after the Doctors had done their rounds. My husband had to have surgery urgently. Mariarosaria took me to hospital and translated to the Doctors and the hospital Administrator. An operation was planned for later that day. The administrator telephoned Mariarosaria later that day to say the opperation was successful and all was well. During the next few mornings Mariarosaria telelphoned the hospital for updates. The hotel bus was made available for me to bring my husband back to the hotel when discharged. The staff at the hotel were amazing. Aliona on reception arranged taxis for me. Francesco translating and so understanding of the need for the corrrect translation to the Doctor and Medics. Mariarosaria taking me to hospital and helping my husband and I understand the operation procedure, talking to the Doctors and hospital administrator, and phoning for updates every day. Every day Marino Petruni (Director Generalle) asked my if I was Ok. and getting an update on my husband's progress. Emanuel and Danielle (Dining room) were so warm yet professional always making me feel welcome in the dining room. What a wonderful Hotel to recover from surgery/illness. The food is excellent, there is always something on the menue for those convalescing. As a lone female for a week I felt very relaxed and cared for. I walked in the park and into the centre of town. I had taxis to take me to and from hospital for visiting, sometimes I took the bus. (buses run on time in Italy) Everyone in the Hotel went above and beyond the call of duty. Its my best kept secret ?

    « Wonderful hotel »

We stayed at this hotel for three nights from 7th to 10th July, it was the last leg of our tour of Tuscany. We had visited previously about 10 years ago and loved our stay, this time was even better. The hotel is in an excellent position right on the promenade in this fantastic resort. The facilities at the hotel are excellent, from the pool and gardens, rooms and restaurant. We stayed on a half board basis and found the food to be excellent quality and the wines good value ranging from around €18 to €29. There is also a bar at the pool serving light lunches. The room we had was huge and had a front sea view balcony plus a side balcony. The staff here are friendly and a special mention must go to Sasha and Guiseppe in the bar as they work so hard and provide great cocktails and snacks. Parking is available for €15 per day which is useful for those with cars.

« The best week of our year »

This hotel represents for us the best week of our year and our seventh visit in 2016 certainly didn't let us down. This hotel is set in a beautiful historic building and maintains a fabulous balance of discrete elegance and stylish comfort. Bedrooms are high ceilinged and simply furnished with original floor tiles, balconies overlook the road, the beach and the sea beyond. Dinner is served on the large terrace in the lush green gardens behind the hotel with attentive waiter service and a wide choice of reasonably priced Italian wines. The immaculate beach opposite offers a perfect way to spend the day, or alternatively the pool in the gardens of the hotel offers a cool respite from the day. The whole hotel feels like one happy family as we recognise many staff from previous visits. I am torn between telling everyone about this hotel and telling no one to keep it our secret!

« A Nice hotel but in need of some attention »

This is a very charming hotel, which is well located. It is classified as a four star hotel because of its amenities but not for the quality of the hotel which is in need of attention. Our room was sea view facing. Because the windows and shutters did not close properly due to the lack of maintenance the room proved to be very noisy. Our room was also very small and I think was one of the smallest in the hotel. If you are considering visiting this hotel you should check the type of room that you are being allocated. Breakfast is served in a beautiful dinning room with comfortable chairs, dinner is based in an outside area with uncomfortable wrought iron chairs without any cushions. The food is variable in quality from mediocre to very good. No tissues in the room are provided unless requested. In all other four star hotels we have stayed in the towels are changed twice a day. At this hotel they were only changed once. I would not choose to return to this hotel but there were many guests that had been visiting for several years or more so it clearly has appeal to lots of people.

    « Hospitality affection Help & Care »

Once again we are in Viareggio at the Hotel Grand Royal . Where else is their to go. It has all we need . Welcomed as usually by wonderful staff . In our usually room we have had for the Past 20 years. This year they have taken out the old style bath and fitted a new shower room which is exelent. Although In truth I did only get to use it one night, befor being rushed of to Hospital at Pietrasanta for an Emergency operation for gallstone infection. And spent a (pleasing! )5days there . The hotel was wonderful they looked after my wife, they even alowed one of the staff to come along and act as an interpreter when discussing my operation ,and giving me my options!. Immediate surgery ,or fly home now and have it done in England. Well surgery won out . Everyone at the hotel from manager to cleaner could not do enough to look after my wife .all acted with kindness and support, even sent transport to collect me from hospital on my discharge.to then spend the rest of my hols convalescing by the pool. Concern and care of the hotel staff was touching and heart felt and my thanks to every one at the hotel . 5 stars are not enough TripAdvisor to be sure. P's on a lighter note, I'ts a good thing I voted in and had my EHIC card. staying in Europe migh have been a better option.??

« The Good The Bad and The Ugly »

We returned from this beautiful old hotel yesterday after a weeks stay. We booked half board in a classic room through Citalia. The architecture of the building as you first see it from outside is breathtaking. The interior is old fashioned but in keeping with the period. Breakfast is excellent and served in beautiful surroundings, dinner was served on the terrace and most of the time was good, although on one evening I chose a Chef's recommendation' of a beef stew and was unable to eat it as the meat was so tough. The pool area is pleasant although We found the noise from the road disturbing. The beach was our choice and was excellent and literally across the road. Our only complaint is the room. We booked a Classic room which is described as on the 1st & 2nd floors at the back without a view. We obviously interpreted the 'without a view' description totally wrong. The room was small and when We opened the curtains and first set of shutters, which I might add was difficult as the curtains are on top of them which made it nearly impossible to open them you then opened the French doors to,then slide open the exterior shutters and we were horrified all we could see was a flat roof with air conditioning units and the opposite wall of hotel (photos attached) I can't believe that all classic rooms have such a terrible view and I booked this last November. We did manage to get the interior shutters past the curtains or we would have had to spend the week in a room without any natural daylight. I did ask to be moved but was told the hotel was full and this was a classic room. I didn't feel like any assistance was going to be offered so we stayed where we were. On the whole we loved the whole experience of Viareggio and the hotel but if thinking of booking I strongly advise avoiding the classic room. Finally our shining star of the week was the young waiter in the bar Sasha he was always pleasant, helpful, efficient and a credit to the hotel.

    « Superb hotel! »

We booked this hotel because it had gardens and a pool, but it offered so much more. This hotel is like something out of a bygone era, opulent and grand. Our room was huge, spotlessly clean with gorgeous views. Excellent choice at breakfast with the options of freshly cooked eggs...... But the best is the stunning gardens with hammocks and the pool and pool bar...... Highly recommend this place, without doubt the best hotel in Viareggio

    « Great hotel »

The hotel is directly across from the promenade and beach, it's a very grand looking hotel inside and out , although it would have been at its best about 50years ago , the breakfast room gets a little crowded most days but the food is acceptable . The evening meals were very good and varied and served by very pleasant staff .The average age of the guest's would be pension age (being one myself) .The free use of the deckchairs and umbrellas on the beach was a bonus .would go back again

« Meriggiare perhaps or is it a case of Abbiocco »

This is a fine old hotel right on the sea front with the long luxurious promenade lined with restaurants, gelateria's (ice cream) and boutiques just a stones throw away. The sandy beach is also right on the hotels doorstep. We stayed for a fortnight (love the fact American's aren't familiar with that word) and we can honestly say we have nothing to complain about at all. Breakfast and evening dinner were very very good, Giuseppe the Bar Manager mixes a fine Aperol Spritz and Mojito. All the staff were extremely friendly from the receptionists, waiters and maids to the lifeguard around the pool. The pool is like what you would see at your local, rectangular and long, so ideal for doing lengths etc. It's even not that cold but perhaps thats the time of the year. Never had trouble getting sun beds or parasols at any time even if we went out early and got back at lunchtime or late afternoon. There is a pool bar serving drinks, lunch, ice cream etc and even a table tennis table and table football. Rooms were spacious but be aware that they aren't very modern (fits in with the hotel demeanour) although the bathrooms would appear to have been updated in the last few years. The shower was very powerful and we were never short of hot water. We had room 230 and had a small balcony with a sea view. Lots of TV channels and tea and coffee making facilities as well. Maid service with fresh towels if required was daily. Now just so that everyone knows what to expect the majority of the guests here were British, there were a few Italians, German's, Dutch and even a family or two from the USA. in our first week I would say that the clientele were more the "Saga" set but the average age range definitely lowered in week two when a few more younger couples arrived so don't discount this hotel as just for "oldies". Other things to point out are: 1) You are not allowed to wear shorts (even tailored) to dinner (has to be long trousers for men) despite the fact that some people came to dinner in jeans and a scruffy T Shirt! 2) There is a main road separating the hotel from the promenade so there is some traffic noise (the Italian's do like to honk their horns) both at night and when sitting around the pool. 3) As with the majority of places we have visited in Italy don't take too much credence from the local transport timetables as often you will stand and wait for sometime only to be confronted with some local saying "It finished!". That rule should especially be observed on a Sunday! 4) Wi-fi is free but we found it to be at it's best around the pool and in the lounge areas rather than inside the rooms. All in all though this is a very nice hotel in a great location and yes ok the main carpet could do with being replaced but don't let that put you off. Go to Lucca (40 mins on the bus) and Forte Dei Marmi (30 mins) where they have a large market on a Wednesday. Pisa is also not too far away. Bus stops are at both the front and back of the hotel. Florence is about 90mins on the train (station is a good 20 min walk from the hotel mind). If the sun shines on you and it did on us (last 2 weeks in June) then you seriously can't go wrong.

    « Rooms need a refresh »

Outside is really impressive, old style liberty hotel just in front of the sea and perfectly located ont the walk. The staff is friendly and the common spaces put you directly in the "belle epoque". The negative point is the room: I stayed in an economy one but we payed more than 100€: the room is clean but the furniture is '80s style (especially the bathroom), the room itself was small and you can clearly hear the noise coming from the corridor. I think it's time to refresh them.

    « Beautiful hotel, luxurious! »

Stayed here for 5 nights during our honeymoon. It was fabulous. Friendly staff, spacious beautiful rooms with high ceiling. Champagne on arrival in our room. Free upgrade to sea view. Impeccably clean and great attention to detail throughout. Lovely pool area (but is noisy from roads directly behind and adjacent to the hotel). It isn't cheap but you get what you are paying for. Breakfast is excellent and the staff cannot do enough for you. Charged for rental of hotel bicycles which at the price we were paying we feel could have been free and are in most of the hotels we stayed in. It is located directly across from beach, shops restaurants etc.

    « Ideal location »

Travelled with Citalia arriving at Pisa airport from Bristol. On arrival we were impressed with the private transfer, We arrived at the hotel at 10.30pm and were pleasantly surprised to find the management had laid on a cold buffet which was very welcome. The hotel is grand and the staff are friendly and obliging. There is a good choice for breakfast Likewise you have a three course evening meal which has 4 choices for each course. In addition as is common in Italian hotels you have a self service appertizer consisting of salads, disappointed at the lack of cheeses or cold meats on offer which I have experienced elsewhere. Generally the food was good. The bus stop at the front of hotel operates a service to Pisa for 3 euros which runs hourly tickets are purchased from the Tobacconist nearby. Hotel guests have access to a private beach opposite which also has changing facilities, showers and toilets and guests are entitled to two deck chairs and umbrella free of charge. The private beach also has a good restaurant/bar attached which is very reasonable. The hotel has an excellent swimming pool with plenty of sun loungers and a beach bar. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would recommend it.

« Old world Italian charm »

I would recommend this hotel for the following reasons. Only 30 minutes from Pisa airport: we booked a return transfer from bravo driver.com for 120 euros but you can also get public bus that runs every hour and stops right outside hotel. Hotel oozes old world Italian charm As soon as you walk into the spacious lobby and the service from staff is excellent. We had side sea view room which was spacious and lovely with small balcony and table and chairs. Tea coffee making facilities in room as is complimentary safe. Large pool with loads of available sun beds and shaded areas if you prefer. Also gardens with hammocks in. Across road is main promenade with loads of bars and shops and also private beach with 2 free deckchairs and sunshades. Hire bikes from hotel and ride to port along promenade. Also lovely large gardens behind hotel to walk in and hire bikes etc. Half board option is good with waiter service and different menu every night and music provided by lady playing piano. Get English newspapers in tabac shop opposite hotel. We visited Pisa to see leaning tower which was excellent. Only 2 minor gripes. The breakfast was fine but no fresh orange juice , just juice made from concentrate. Also the beds were quite hard. Don't let these put you off going because overall the hotel is lovely. Thoroughly relaxing holiday.

    « Wonderful hotel »

Just returned from an amazing weeks holiday at this wonderful hotel , where nothing was to much trouble for the staff. We stayed in room 211 , which had antique furniture, a small balcony with a side sea view, although the bathroom was tiny , the gap between the toilet and wall was only 6 inches , you had to negotiate around this to get to the shower! However this did not cause us any problems , as the situation of this hotel is just across the road from the private beach which the hotel uses, and was ideal for relaxing on. We also caught local buses from just outside the hotel , to Pisa and Lucca, fares were only 3 euros each ,one way. We also hired bikes from the hotel , rode to the harbour , through the pine forest and along the coastal bike path for some miles, good exercise as the food was so good and varied, breakfast was served in the dining room with its wonderful glass domed ceiling , evening meals were eaten outside in the garden .All in all a relaxing break , would recommend this hotel

    « Wonderful and memorable Wedding ! »

Following our decision to get married in Tuscany, we visited several locations and in the end we decided for the Grand hotel Royal in Viareggio, one of the most renown holiday resorts in Italy. The Royal is more than a beautiful hotel, it is a landmark with its magnificent building full of history and class , and moreover it is well located in front of the beach and the Promenade of Viareggio. The Service was excellent: when we enquired for the wedding, the staff and mgmt. were very helpful, very keen to welcome our demands and at same-time pro-active in offering good inputs for making a special event even more special. The preparation of the event happened very smoothly and the result was excellent making our day unique. Our guests were coming from abroad too, and they had the opportunity to stay at the hotel booking rooms at good rates, and full enjoying the services the hotel can offer (a great oasis of relax is provided by the swimming pool and gardens). We were very pleased with the feedback received by our guests , they were very impressed by the venue, their experience was really Grand (not comparable with the villas or other venues we were offered to visit in the selection process). It is worth mentioning that the prime location of the hotel was ideal to our friends &family as they could also spend some good time at beach, and/ or visiting the surroundings. In few words: an unique landmark venue, excellent client service, and food; prime location, all this contributed to make our day more special and successful! If we consider the costs, an amazing good value! A big thank you to the Hotel staff from us and our guests!

    « GRAND HOTEL VIAREGGIO »

Recently enjoyed a lovely stay at this classic hotel. It oozed class from a bygone era. The staff were impeccable and Sasha the bar waiter looked after us so attentively. The gardens and pool area are very well kept. Our Seaview room was in excellent order although the shower cubicle was a little on the small side.

« A few days at the beach »

my wife and I drove to this hotel with some trepidation when we realized by the GPS that we were not staying to near our target city of Lucca. We arrived on a Saturday evening at Viareggio and drove slowly down Viale Giosue Carducci both stunned by the spring break like atmosphere of the place. A boardwalk style promenade followed the white sandy beach lined with shops and restaurants for miles. Many places played pounding music that echoed off the hotels facing the beach from the opposite side of the road. We passed dozens of hotels that looked unappealing in a Fort Lauderdale sort of way. There was a unhappy silence in the car until we saw the Grand Hotel Royal standing in all her glory like a true lady amid mud wrestling go go girls. The staff spoke better English than me and were extremely welcoming in a very sincere manner. Our luggage was swept away to our room in a matter of minutes and we were in the gloriously appointed bar with one of the best Martinis I have had in a long time chilling our hands. When we saw our room we were exceptionally pleased with the mountain and the ocean views from 12 foot high windows framed by arches. The room itself was large with 20 foot ceilings a large bathroom with a window and all the amenities one could hope for.. Every time we left the room were amazed by the height and width of the hallways with a blood red runner laid in the center over marble floors. It would not be fair to future travelers to point out a couple of problems we experienced. The parking situation was on you with little help from the hotel. You are given a code to a side gate and if your are lucky you will find a place to park. The dining room was fit for aging Brits with pastel padded chairs that would seem more suitable to a tea room or a sales conference. The food was OK but served in a buffet style making it feel a London version of the Golden Corral. On a Saturday night you will not get into any restaurant without reservations This a weekend getaway for many Italian and other European youth so it is a bit like the Hampton's crossed with South Beach in the States. It is noisy and the throbbing music going on until 4:00 AM or so can be annoying for anybody over 30. After Saturday the crowds thin dramatically and the beach is lovely with great restaurants in every neighborhood. We easily drove to Pisa, Lucca and Genoa fro day trips but missed the beach and the town when we were gone. All in all a GRAND hotel who's age spots are covered up beautifully made us feel like we were in a bit of Downton Abbey. I will come back!

    « Very good but......such a shame. »

This is a lovely hotel with good food and good service. It provided us with excellent value of for money for our one week's holiday. In normal circumstances we would want to return next year and to tell all our friends. However, during our stay, another guest - an elderly man travelling alone, was relegated to a tiny, noisy room attached to the lift (Room 442) for two weeks because of a mistake made by his booking agent. I would expect a good hotel to focus on the guest and upgrade the guest or organise a move to another hotel with better facilitles. Nothing happened. Of course, , mistakes and problems can occur anywhere but I believe good customer service depends on the way difficulties are dealt with. It distinguishes the best from the rest. Most of the guests were over 60 years old and another guest commented that it would be a risk to return to this hotel as the same situation could befall any one us. The hotel's lack of action, despite numerous appeals, does not inspire confidence to return or to recommend to others. This is the first time I have posted a critical review on trip advisor.

« Charming hotel with superb old fashioned service! »

Myself and my wife stayed just for one night on a short holiday driving through Italy, but we wished we could of stayed much longer! We booked our room on the morning of our stay before driving up to viareggio from Siena, we reserved our room through trip advisor and got what we consider to be an absolute bargain. From the moment we arrived the staff on reception could not of been any more pleasant or helpful. The decor is old fashioned, but intentionally so. Our room was fabulous with huge Windows, a comfy bed, excellent shower and even a dressing room! The pool area is kept immaculately clean, and the surrounding grounds are well kept. But the thing that made our stay in the this hotel so enjoyable for us were the staff, each and every employee we came across made a point of ensuring that our stay was the most pleasant and enjoyable possible. The sort of service we received from all staff members was of the standard we no longer thought existed. If you're looking for a super sleek modern hotel then you're looking at the wrong place, if however, you prefer old world charm, character and first class customer service at a fraction of the cost then look no further.

    « Elegant and Charming »

Beautiful hotel with high standards throughout. Stayed as a couple in June for 1 week, half board. Good selection of hot and cold breakfasts, there was a wide choice for each of the four courses in the evening and the standard of food was excellent. Hotel room was spacious and spotless with towels and bedclothes changed regularly. Beach towels were provided in the room as is a safe (free of charge). Tea/coffee facilities and mini bar were also provided. Good Wi-Fi reception in the hotel. I found the hairdryer provided in the room was not as powerful as I am used to (I took my own, after reading a previous review). Nice, good sized pool surrounded by plenty of sunbeds located in garden at rear of hotel . There is a park which runs behind the hotel which was pleasant to walk through. Bus stops for Lucca and Pisa are located outside the hotel. We found Lucca to be well worth a visit. For trips further afield, the train station is approx a 20min walk away. The beautiful sandy Annita beach is across the road from the hotel and as a guest of the hotel you get 2 free deckchairs and an umbrella (sunbeds can be rented at a charge). The snack bar at the Annita was very good and reasonably priced. During our stay we found all the hotel staff to be exceptionally friendly, helpful and courteous. We had a most enjoyable stay in Viareggio and I would not hesitate in highly recommending the hotel and would look forward to making a return visit ourselves in the future.

Stayed for 10 nights half board in June through Citalia. The Staff is very very friendly, the food the best we ever had in Italy. We will definitely come back again! Excellent free wifi throughout the hotel.

Stayed for 2 weeks half board in May/June through Citalia. A beautiful hotel in a good location with friendly, helpful staff. Excellent breakfast and evening meal with a wide choice of menu. Our room at the front of the hotel was large, comfortable, well equipped and had a sea view. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel.

    « Love This Place »

We've stayed here twice now. The second time we asked for the same room and the hotel obliged. We find the staff, the food, the value for money and the facilities (private beach and pool) just so good. The bar serves the best Negronis in Viareggio.

    « Wonderful week! »

We have just returned from a week in this lovely hotel. Great service and charm from every member of staff. We had a sea view room on the first floor and our daughter a single room nearby. Nothing seemed to be too much trouble. The choice of food at breakfast was excellent and the wonderful choice of fish in the evenings was perfect. We also enjoyed the bar at the pool. The bar in the evening was comfortable and the service good. The hotel is well placed for the beach, walks to the harbour and trips further afield. We will definitely come back again! Excellent free wifi throughout the hotel.

    « A wonderful place to stay »

We've just returned from a weeks stay at this fabulous hotel and can't wait to return. We had a room on the second floor with balcony overlooking the sea on a half board basis. From the moment we were picked up from Pisa airport we were looked after by all the staff who couldn't have been more helpful. The reception team were always available with info, helping to book trips, providing local travel timetables etc. The restaurant provided a varied breakfast and four course evening meal catering for all taste with plenty of local traditional dishes. This was efficiently overseen by Daniel and his team of waiters (including the lovely and always smiling Lorenzo!) making sure that all guests were well looked after. There is a good sized pool where you can relax on the plentiful sunbeds with a nearby bar serving light lunches. If this is your first visit to the area I would recommend booking the tours, particularly to Florence and Sienna, the guides are so knowledgeable and ensure you don't miss anything (special thanks to Monica and Nicolete, also the additional guide in Florence - sorry I can't remember your name - you all do a brilliant job!) All in all a lovely holiday where we felt thoroughly spoilt.

    « A beautiful Art Deco hotel »

We booked the hotel because of the excellent reviews. We were not disappointed. The attractive hotel is situated in a great location for the beach and doing sightseeing trips. The bus stop is by the hotel for visiting Pisa and Lucca. The train station is about 15/20 minutes walk from the hotel. It is ideal for a trip to Florence. The direct train takes only one and a half hours. We found all the staff to be helpful, pleasant and professional. It was a great weeks holiday.

    « Wow ! »

This is a beautiful, well-cared for art deco hotel. Apart from the fabulous building there is an enclosed garden at the rear with large swimming pool, poolside loungers bar, areas of shade (including a couple of hammocks beneath the trees) and sunshine. Hotel staff extremely helpful. We stayed half-board, everyone gets an exclusive reserved table in the ornate dining room so no rush to clear us off for someone else. Breakfast, served in a different room was mostly continental but with hot scrambled egg, bacon and chopped frankfurters. Also fabulous varieties of bread. There is a bus stop right outside the hotel which will take you to Pisa for 3 euro each way if you buy your tickets from the tobacconist across the road. At the back of the hotel is a bus stop for Lucca, again just 3 euro each way. Hotel guests have free access to one of the beaches across the promenade. Good quality free wifi available in bedrooms and public areas.

    « Nice beachfront hotel »

We enjoyed our stay at this Best Western hotel. The location was perfect and our room facing the beach was very comfortable. The pool was beautiful. The restaurant in the hotel was not very good, but there were plenty of other good places to eat. The only problem that we had was that we were not credited Best Western reward points because we did not reserve directly through the hotel, which seems wrong to us, especially considering the cost of our stay.

« Full of old world charm »

Booked a sea view room on 4th floor and was not disappointed (even without a balcony) where the outlook was to sea and the promenade. Firstly the staff throughout were friendly, kind and helpful. The food was very good and the wine list was not expensive. The hotel had high ceilings giving character and there were plenty of areas to relax, besides your room. A big plus for us was the swimming pool, gardens and seating area. A minor disappointment was being charged for the beach facilities.

« Wonderful step back in time »

I loved my stay at this hotel! The hotel is in a beautiful building and is very conveniently located for the beach, the center of Viareggio and the pineta. The hotel grounds are nice and the secured parking is well worth the daily fee. The rooms are very clean and spacious. We had a lovely view of the sea towards Camaiore from our window. My only complaint is that, since I have become accustomed to cushy American beds, the standard Italian twin beds felt a bit firm for my taste. We had dinner and breakfast at the hotel every night and found the food good and the staff extremely attentive. I was ill and asked for a doctor and the hotel arranged for me to see the most wonderful Doctor after hours. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone. It's like stepping back in time to an era when service was impeccable. Complimenti! Ci siamo trovati benissimo al Grand Hotel Royal.

    « Girls on Tour »

Just had a fabulous break with the girls. This hotel has a fabulous location and the staff are brilliant. Sash and Guiesppi serve lovely cocktails and have great sense of humour. The rooms are big and spacious the breakfast staff are quick and efficient. I would definately go back. I would take my own hair dryer though as the one in the bathroom provided is useless. Thanks all.

« A Hotel that has grown with age »

A magnificent building full of Italian splendour. You cannot wonder at the magnificent staircase which is the first sight you see when entering this lovely hotel. My wife and I had 10 days of a wonderful relaxing stay. Food is good and the amount of fish on the menus is wonderful and so fresh and lots of lovely pasta served in the magnificent dining room. We had a big sea view room from which we spent a lot of time people watching and looking at the wonderful sunsets which in May is quite spectacular. The complimentary chairs on the beach are adequate but can be upgraded for a small fee. The promenade is wide and a walk to the port {yachts you could only dream of} with coffee on the way is a must as there are so many good coffee bars and restaurants. Buses run from the hotel to Pisa and other places and you can get a train to Florence quite easily. Go try it, it's worth a visit!!!

    « Perfetto! »

We have just returned from a week in this beautiful hotel and had a wonderful stay. The hotel is a grand old lady full of history but has a very warm and friendly atmosphere with extremely friendly staff. Buffet breakfast had lots of choice and dinner was excellent served in the grand ballroom. The marina in Viareggio is definitely worth a visit, full of super yachts and a glimpse into how the other half live! We used the local bus for a trip to Pisa and the train to Florence which were both excellent. We also booked a trip to Portofino at the hotel reception which goes every Monday afternoon and is a beautiful place to visit. We like to walk, there are over 10 miles of footpaths along the coast, however my only disappointment was that because of all the beach bars and shops you cannot actually see the sea while walking unless you walk along the waters edge. Looking forward to a return visit!

    « Another Fantastic Holiday!!! »

In April, I visited this fabulous hotel again and had a wonderfully relaxing holiday. I have stayed here many times before and I know that I am guaranteed an amazing time! The location is fantastic for all amenities - close to shops, beach, pinewoods, and major cities of art and culture. The transport links are great with a railway station within walking distance and bus routes that pass the hotel gates. The hotel itself is second to none. The staff are efficient and nothing is too much trouble. They are friendly whilst offering the most professional service. I stayed in a single room at the back of the hotel which was quiet, spacious and well equipped with free wifi and new television. The bathroom was new and everything was spotlessly clean, being serviced every day. The restaurant offered a huge variety for breakfast catering for every single requirement, hot/cold, continental/cooked, children, etc. Dinner was fabulous - this offered a few choices for each course in addition to a superb buffet bar serving salads, seafood, breads, etc. Overall, another fantastic holiday that I would 100% recommend to anybody travelling with family or friends or, as I did, on their own.

    « Still the best »

A return visit to this beautiful hotel didnt disappoint in any way. We were given a complimentary sea view on arrival ( perhaps I shouldnt mention it ha ha ) The staff as usual are outstanding - my husband was ill for a few days and they provided tea at dinner rptime and sorted out trips we had to cancel - very considerate . Will definately be back - everything is as good if not better than previous visit - apart from one day of bad weather of course !

A lovely hotel full of old style charm and classic style, our room was at the back of the hotel nice and quiet and very spacious. We were half board ,the food on an evening was delicious, what i especially liked was that it was all waiter service(apart from a salad bar where you could help yourself) our waiters were Alessandro and Frederico, they were very efficient and friendly. The reception staff were also very helpful, printing off train and bus timetables when we needed them(more than tourist info would do!!) Overall a lovely hotel with great staff in a great location, handy for trains or buses to Lucca,Pisa and Florence .Viarreggio is a fab place to visit.

    « A Beautiful Hotel »

This glamorous, romantic hotel has got it all, you will feel like you have gone back in time and are on the grand tour. It is so perfectly placed to visit Pisa, Florence, Cinque Terra and if you want to stay around Viareggio, it, too, has lots to see and do. The hotel has a garden and pool area to relax in. The rooms are beautiful, the staff friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them. Oh - and the food is great too. What more can I say? Just go, you will not be disappointed.

    « Simply the best...again! »

We first visited this amazing hotel in Summer 2013 and loved it from the minute we walked through the front doors, and I knew we would return. The location is spot on for the beach and getting around the area and the staff can't do enough for you. We stayed on a half board basis and every meal was of a high class. You can order your dinner choice at breakfast if you wish. The Saturday night buffet is lovely providing the opportunity to try new foods as you can eat as much as you like! We met a lovely couple in 2013 who were also staying at the hotel, and they have become life long friends. So much so, the 4 of us went back in August 2015 for 2 weeks to celebrate our 15th wedding anniversaries (what a coincidence that we'd got married on the same day). It was lovely to see the same staff and guests there again, all of which made our second stay even more enjoyable. The hotel and resort is classy and deserves its 4 stars. There are some lovely shops and the market comes every week for the morning (Thursday I think). Although we don't have children we didn't see any Kids Clubs etc, however there are plenty of children in the resort and the beach caters well for them with plenty of facilities such as playgrounds, as does the park behind the hotel. The sea is warm and doesn't get deep until you're quite a way out from the shore. Men are required to wear long trousers to dinner and the majority of ladies dress up for the evening. With regards to rooms, you get what you pay for, e.g. the front rooms are stunning and it was lovely to sit on the balcony before going to dinner. We stayed in a side sea view room (no balcony) on both occasions and each room was huge with high ceilings making it feel airy. The bedroom furniture is traditional and the bathrooms are clean and modern. Towels are changed as often as you want and you receive a complimentary beach towel each day. Bedding is changed regularly too. The air-con is needed and works well. Breakfast was plentiful and it was lovely to eat al fresco in the evening in the beautiful dining room, accompanied by a lady playing the piano on some evenings. The pool area is great and Massimo makes sure all of his guests are happy and catered for. He tried to teach me to speak Italian, but I'm no good! We hired the bikes on several occasions and it was lovely to cycle up/down the coast road safely using the cycle lanes, and it's all flat, which suited me. Access to the Anita beach area is across the road, and the beach bar there serves great lunchtime snacks and drinks, (as does the hotel's pool bar). Hotel guests have to use designated deck chairs/umbrellas' (the hotel name is on the umbrella post), however on your first visit the staff show you where you can sit (as part of the complimentary hotel access) along with the facilities such as the WC. You get 2 deck chairs and can pay €10 to the beach staff for a sun bed. Be warned that the 'lucky lucky' people selling merchandise (handbags, sunglasses, sarongs etc) or offering massages, are constantly walking amongst the sun beds/deckchairs. We found that if you ignore them, then they leave you alone! We used the train station to get to Florence, Lucca and Pisa. It's a good 25 min walk away from the hotel. Or the bus stop outside the hotel takes you to Forte Dei Marmi (how the other half live!) A trip to Portofino is also well worth it as it is beautiful. Make use of the huge park behind the hotel to escape from the heat. Here you can hire different types of bikes, have a snack or just stroll through the trees. To summarise we can all see why guests return every year, as it is a very special place, and we will return again one day, when we will take a trip to do some wine tasting and see Cinque Terre. Thank you Marino Patruno and we will see you all again in the future!

« Beautiful views of the beach »

After three weeks in Italy and driving all over, what a welcoming place to stay and just walk! Beautiful old hotel with large marble staircases, lovely breakfast buffet ( great croissants ) and nice staff. The location is perfect, across the street from shopping and multiple areas to rent chairs, umbrellas and chaises. We paid 5E each for great chaises.

    « Superbly placed hotel »

Just back from 10 days at this grand lady of a hotel. Could not find any fault at all. Every member of staff was courteous and consistently helpful. The dinners were excellent with great choice. There was no need to hire a car - you are right on the long and stylish promenade and it is ver easy to get to the station. This opens up travelling to Pisa, Siena, Florence, Lucca - I could go on. The trains were all frequent, punctual and CLEAN. The hotel has a pool in an oasis of a garden with a pool bar and hotel residents are able to use a private part of the beach opposite - again somewhere you can get a drink or something to eat.

« fin de siecle elegance »

This is a lovely hotel with slightly faded glamour. We had a seaview room, which was large, and it had a big bathroom and a small balcony. Everything in the hotel was spotless, and the staff were friendly and helpful. . Breakfasts were excellent, with good coffee and pastries Croissants with honey from the honeycomb was delicious.. We thought it was a pity that the orange juice was undoubtedly from concentrate, and the fresh fruit salad was mostly apple and pithy bits of orange. Dinners were good, with plenty of choice. They were waiter service every day except Saturday, when there was a buffet. Nobody we spoke to was keen on the buffet. Two nights a week there was a pianist in the dining room, who played bland music. We felt that more popular tunes might have been less soporific! The pool was a good size, surrounded by plenty of sunbeds. Adjacent to it was a bar, where snacks could be ordered. There was an outside WC , ( the lock didn't work),and two changing rooms. Near the pool was a table tennis table and table football. The garden was pretty, with a couple of hammocks. Outside the hotel was a small road and a long promenade with shops and cafes. The marina and more shops were a walk of about 20 minutes away. We were given a card allowing us to use the area of private beach opposite, which had a cafe, parasols and deck chairs. Sunbeds could be hired there for an extra cost. Buses ran from back and front of the hotel and were easy to use.

« Sea View and Flair »

We chose Viareggio because Pisa was so freaking expensive... THANK GOD ! This Hotel was an amazing experience. Build probably at the change of the 19th century and perfectly renovated room make it a true Italian experience (in positive ways). They kept the old tiled floor for example and did an amazing job in the bathroom with integrated marble matching the rest of the ambiente. If you like real nice hotels with true atmosphere and great rooms this is for you. The rooms was impeccable and opening the shutters you had perfect view to the sea (fyi - if people complain about sea noise then you really should book Pisa instead... small waves are a perfect sleeping pill). Staff is great and friendly and speaks good english - not always the case. Breakfast was plenty and wide variety. You like muesli or flakes, bread or cake, eggs and bacon - chose your poison :-). Special suggestion - we did a trip out to the GROTTO DI VENTE which is kind of unknown. If you can plan this side trip (car is must - no bus there) and you will have an experience matching the largest caves in the world...

« Classic beach hotel with great breakfast »

This hotel is located at the beachfront of Viareggio. It is a typical classic beach hotel and it has that atmosphere everywhere. We had a seaview room with small balcony, which is great to overlook the boulevard and sea. At night it may be a bit noisy though due to the busy road in front of the hotel. The room had a classic decor with slightly hard beds. Breakfast was great. The possibility to rent a hotelbike at the reception and to explore the area is a bonus.

    « A wonderful time »

We stayed here for a week in April, a lovely hotel in a great location. Good menu choice with superb food and great wine. All staff were very attentive in a very pleasant way, special mention must go to Daniele in the dining room, reception staff and porter. We have been to Italy on numerous occasions but would say that this has probably been the best experience thus far. Would strongly recommend to anyone wanting a true taste of Italy with all the benefits of 4 star.

« Grand hotel with an amazing breakfast! »

We absolutely loved this hotel! Definitely one of the nicest we've stayed at in Europe for the price. The breakfast was to die for - a little bit of everything for everyone. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. We had a sea view room and thought it was worth it. We had a lovely picnic in the beautiful garden area and enjoyed the sunshine too. The location was also very central and convenient.

    « Fab hotel »

Visited for a short weekend and thought the location was perfect. The best part of the hotel was its staff. They were all friendly and very efficient. Lovely breakfast with something to suit all tastes and the rooms, although a little dated (part of the hotel's charm) were spacious and very clean. Situated opposite the beach on a long promenade it was easy to get around. Used public transport to visit Lucca with no problem. Would highly recommend and return again.

    « Enchanting, as always!! »

I hope that this hotel always stays the same. It is genuine art nouveau, very well maintained, and absolutely charming. There is nothing I prefer to arriving on a hot summer night, opening the doors to the balcony, and being confronted by the scent of jasmine and the sound of the sea. The best!!!

« FANTASTIC HOTEL AND HOLIDAY »

I have looked at Viareggio for a few years and we finally went this March and I was very impressed. The Grand Hotel Royal is the best hotel on the sea front - located right in the middle of the main street and it is a beautifully maintained hotel, with a imposing and elegant presence. The staff I am also pleased to say could not be more helpful! Breakfast was excellent, with great coffee and a more complete and fulfilling selection than Italian hotels usually offer. We arranged collection from Pisa airport through the hotel, which was excellent and our triple room (2 Adults and 1 Child), was magnificent, we paid extra for the sea view and balcony and the room was way better than it looked on the hotels website! Trips to Lucca and a bike ride through a local Viareggio park were great value and great fun. Local restaurants of which there were plenty were everything you expect from Italy. A great holiday !! recommended for children also and has more to offer than you will expect. Immaculate beach also.

« Ah! See the sea »

Truly this is s grand old hotel. It feels a bit like stepping into the glory days of the 40's in the best sense. Lovely sweeping staircase, well maintained grounds and furnishings, sparkling chandeliers, lovely! One could say it feels dated (the clientele are on the aging side, we are in our 50's and were the younguns!) but we found the throw back a welcome respite. The staff were exceptionally helpful with planning adventures (absolutely go to the Cinque Terre from there! The concierge will help make that happen!), asking directions, choosing restaurants. Our room was on the 6th floor sea side and such a lovely view! The pool was so refreshing, rather like swimming in a fresh water lake. Enjoy the peaceful grounds with a cappuccino, you'll be glad you did!

    « Returned after 20th wedding anniversary - a joy of a place »

We honeymooned in Viareggio in the 1980's and used to cycle by this beautiful imposing hotel wondering if we would ever be able to afford to stay there and years later we booked a week's' holiday staying in a beautiful suite with amazing views. It was just how we remembered it and were not disappointed. It is excellently situated and we hired bikes and cycled up and down the area enjoying stopping in for a glass of wine or an ice cream as the notion took us. Amazing view and scenery in Viareggio but the architecture inside this hotel needs to be seen to be believed - stunning and will definately be back

    « A word about the bikes »

Although it was the end of the season (end of October) we had a pleasant week in Viareggio. It was the Grand Hotel's last week before closing and it was, at best, only one third full. It could be a tad eerie walking down those wide echoing corridors at night, a bit like the Overlook Hotel in the movie 'The Shining' without the scary music. Although all the beach concessions were closed, most of the good bars and restaurants were still opened in the town The hotel was large and well appointed and the staff were excellent. I've been in Viareggio several times and it can be a bit hectic so this possibly a good time to go. A word about was the hotel bikes - useless. Twenty minutes was enough. As maneuverable, and weighing as much, as a Russian T-34 tank - the seats were almost rusted into position, I don't even know why they bother, there's a concession in the park ('Le Pineta' just behind the Hotel) where the bikes are newer, cheaper and better maintained.

    « A Wonderful Hotel in a Beautiful Setting »

After spending 8 nights in The Grand Hotel Royal, I can wholeheartedly recommend this hotel to others. We were given a lovely spacious room with a beautiful view of the sea. While this is not a modern hotel, the amenities and staff were wonderful. We spend our days wandering through Tuscany and Cinque Terra, and found this location central and very convenient. They offer (for a charge) daily parking, and this was great. We even got to use the lovely pool, although it was October. There are many restaurants and shops, even a lovely market just outside, one day a week. It was the perfect spot from which to explore this area.

    « Fantastic! »

I stayed at the Best Western Grand Hotel Royal during the second week of October. I can honestly say it was a fantastic holiday! The hotel certainly was grand. A beautiful and elegant building full of character. Old fashioned but this is as it should be in such a building. I had a single room which was small but clean and comfortable with plenty of storage space and a lovely, large en suite. Reasonably comfortable bed and plenty of sheets, towels etc. The bathroom was a brilliant size with a shower cubicle only (fine by me). Plenty of hot water and a decent shower (always a bonus!) The hotel staff were friendly and extremely accommodating. The reception staff were always willing to help with bus/train timetables and general enquiries. The waiters were fantastic as was the barman whose English was incredibly impressive. The food was amazing! A three course meal every evening with a decent choice for all courses. There was a buffet on the Saturday evening which was a little disappointing to be honest as there wasn't a massive choice on offer, still delicious though. The hotel itself is situated centrally in Viareggio. Lots of restaurants, cafes, bars and a supermarket etc. around. There was also an array of shops, both designer (I can dream!) and more affordable (more realistic for me, I'm afraid). The beach was beautiful, clean and well maintained with lots of beach bars on the promenade. I imagine Viareggio is fantastic at the height of Summer when more bars are open. We stayed at the end of season but this suited us. There are bus stops outside the hotel and across the road. You can buy tickets from a tobacconist across the road. Very affordable and accessible enabling you to get to Pisa, Lucca, Pietra Santa etc. The train station is about a 20 minute walk but a taxi there is pretty cheap. If you intend on going to Florence, I suggest taking the train. It's a lovely journey and not too expensive. It takes about 1hr 40mins. Florence was of course, absolutely stunning and I suggest maybe two days there. Overall, a wonderful holiday. I loved Viareggio and honestly couldn't recommend Best Western enough, they made the stay a pleasurable one!

    « Great Hotel »

This is the second time I've stayed at this hotel, and returned because of the great stay I had before. We walk to and from the hotel to the train station in 20 to 30 minutes. This is a wonderful hotel to stay at and catch the train to the Cinque Terre, or Pisa, or Carrara or Lucca. The hotel is grand in stature, is right on the beach, comes with a super breakfast. The hotel has wide elevators that fit you and your luggage. I've stayed in October both trips and the rates are great at this time of the year.

    « Italian Style »

We have just returned from 4 nights at the Grand Hotel Royal at the end of our two week Tuscan adventure. What an impressive hotel with a fabulous presence. From check in to check out you would find it difficult to find fault with the staff, the rooms or the great breakfast. We had a room on the 3rd floor with a balcony overlooking the sea.....stunning view! Have to say the split doors to the room took a little getting used to. A quaint touch harking back to the days when it was first built. Rooms were very well equipped, with tea & coffee, safe, etc and spotlessly clean, toiletries refreshed each day. Small quibble, the WiFi in the room was a bit weak, but only a minor issue (It was great in the public areas) We tried the restaurant for dinner and enjoyed it very much. The service was good and the food was great. With such a great location, great staff and good food we would be happy to return again when next in Tuscany. Highly recommended.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this beautiful grand hotel. All staff were a credit to management. Our room was always cleaned by the time we came back from breakfast.Danielle our waiter for the week was very efficient with a lovely manner. Giusseppe the barman was charming and ensured excellent cocktails. The hotel is well placed for public transport and we enjoyed visiting Pisa, Lucca etc .Unfortunately we had a bad week of weather but still managed to go out and about . We had a lovely balcony room on 3rd floor.

« Excellent and elegant hotel »

We returned last week from a most enjoyable week in the Grand Royal. It lived up to its reputation in all major respects, especially the staff and the lovely old building in a great location. We asked for certain things in advance and they were provided - many thanks. In October most day tours have ceased but that hardly matters as it is so easy to travel to lovely, interesting places by public transport. One could quibble about details such as having to operate the heavy wooden shutters by hand; the shower temperature not being properly controlled; and the very firm mattress (just ask for a mattress topper). But all such matters are forgiven because of the overall quality of the guests' experience at this hotel. It was a pleasure to be there!

« Grand old lady of Viareggio »

Just returned from 11 nights in the charming Grand Hotel Royal. It was like being transported back in time but in a good way. The staff were very helpful and friendly, especially Giuseppe in the bar each evening. Our room was on the 5th floor with a sea view but no balcony. To open the windows and hear the sea each day was lovely. When the wind blew, and it did, the old lady creaked, but we expected that. Bed was very comfortable, facilities were more than adequate and breakfast was just what we wanted. Worthy of the four star rating. Would we return? Yes, most definitely.

My sister in law and I Just returned after spending 5 glorious days at this hotel. We really enjoyed the Italian ambience of this elegant hotel . The staff were very attentive and helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The bar area was a lovely place to relax in the evenings and Gessippi, the bar man was welcoming and professional. He had a friendly smile for everyone and he just made the best cocktails. Evening meals were excellent and some evenings there was live music which created a great atmosphere. The hotel is located on the promenade just across from a beautiful beach, bus stop outside the hotel and great shops very close by. Pisa to the south and Cinque Terra to the north is easily accessed by bus or train. There is a pool at the rear of the hotel which is surrounded by beautiful gardens . This was my third time to stay at the Grand Hotel Royal and it did not disappoint. A truly grand experience. I will return.

    « Nondiscussible family tradition »

For more than 20 years we spend our family summer holiday in Grand Hotel Royal. The kids grew up there and now the second generation is following. Discussions about alternatives are out of the question. The beach and the nearby mountains offer something for everyone. The management and staff stayed the same over the years but they found every year room for improvement. The key success factor of the hotel is the Italian hospitality. It is the catalyst for easy living in a good equiped hotel with an excellent Tuscan kitchen.

« Elegance at its best »

This hotel reeks of elegance and old time sophistication. Reception area, grand staircase, large comfortable rooms with all amenities you need, and a breakfast fit for royalty, all served with white gloves by friendly staff. Situated right along the main stretch of road parallel to the beach, with many shops within minutes of the hotel. This one deserves 5 stars.

    « Grand Hotel - magnificent hotel »

The resort of Viarreggio is excellent - lovely beaches, the promenade is flat - so great for those with mobility problems. The Grand Royal is absolutely excellent - great food, service, comfortable and clean rooms, if you are on the 5th Floor you get fantastic views of the mountains. The staff are very attentive and really helpful and courteous.

« Magnificent hotel, could not have wished for anything better! »

If you are thinking of visiting Tuscany, try Viareggio where you will find a hotel to which you will want to revisit many times. We have recently returned from our second visit, the first coinciding with our 30th Wedding Anniversary and the 60th Anniversary of the Puccini Festival at Torre del Lago. The whole experience was amazing. Best Western Grand Hotel Royal provided us with everything we could have asked for. In our case, we had a balcony overlooking a water fountain beyond which was a ?classy' shopping strip punctuated by numerous restaurants and bars. Go a further hundred yards and you're already on the extremely clean, tidy and perfectly safe beach with its own bars/restaurants serving delightful, tasty and healthy food throughout the day. The hotel is a very family friendly environment. Breakfast is timed to accommodate the early riser, to those who may want to attend somewhat later. It is buffet style with a difference, whatever your pallet...it's there. To ease you into the day there is the light background music. Everything is relaxed. Staying with cuisine, if you choose to have your evening meal in the hotel you will have a wide choice of food on the menus (more than one). You will be served by impeccably dressed and courteous waiters (nothing is too much), the food is plentiful and to a high standard. The hotel pool is extremely well maintained and has a vigilant poolside lifeguard. We had booked our tickets in advance for the operas but the journey to the theatre and back to the hotel some 15 miles each way was made easier by the assistance of the very experienced and helpful staff on reception. The rooms are spacious, very clean and have lots of character. The chamber maids are diligent and accommodating with room times for cleaning. I don't know what other people's expectations are, but for us it was 5 out of 5 and highly recommendable. All in all it was an extremely enjoyable, faultless experience. We are already looking forward to our next stay at Grand Hotel Royal. Thank You.
